KohIMA, JUNE 13 (PTI): Nagaland today got an innovative water solution technology project — solar powered water treatment units — in three villages of the state capital. State Minister for Public Health Engineering (PHE), Noke Wangnao inaugurated the water treatment unit at Tsiesema village about 13 kms away from state capital Kohima while similar two units were installed and made functional in Meriema and Kijumetouma villages. These were the most water scarce villages of Kohima district, Wangnao said in his inaugural address while stating the project was funded by the Union Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation in 2009 under ``The National Rural Drinking Water Programme” (NRDWP). Mumbai based company Adittya Corporation developed the Solar powered water treatment unit, he said adding the three units were valued at Rs 149.61 lakh and would provide drinking water facility to 2,639 people of the three villages. “We have to look for other options and technologies in the form of rain water harvesting, water supply by pumps and revival of traditional wells,” Wangnao added. Dimapur | June 13

The Lotha Eloe Ekhung Dimapur (LEED) has demanded the reinstatement of four Dimapur Women Cell personnel, who were suspended from work in the aftermath of the January 12 rape incident at the State Stadium in Dimapur. The LEED stated that UBI Rose Yanthan, UBSI Mhabeni and, constables Arenla Ao and Yhunile were suspended from service based on allegations of mistreating

the victim. Three youths involved in the act were arrested by the police. The four officers were suspended after it was alleged that the victim (in her teens) was assaulted by duty personnel, present at the time, when she went to lodge a complaint. The officer-in-charge, the duty officer and the two constables were later suspended based on the findings of an internal departmental inquiry. Terming the inquiry as biased and the subsequent findings as not bereft of loopholes, LEED

president Lumbeni Ezung told media persons on June 13 that it took up the case of the four officers. “They were suspended merely based on allegation and without properly ascertaining the facts. They should’ve been provided ample scope to argue their case. But they were given no such opportunity,” said Ezung. Ezung further stated that the LEED along with the Dimapur Rengma Women Hoho submitted a memorandum to the Director General of Police on

Friday in this regard. It was handed over to the district Superintendent of Police. The memorandum, while empathising with the victim, stated that the officers were also victimised as a result of “unscrupulous manipulation... duress and pressure” born of concocted allegation. It further stated that the three accused of the crime, who were forwarded to court after their arrests, are out on bail. It was informed that all three had obtained bail on April 1, 2014.

NPCC censures ‘jumbo sized’ DAN cabinet

DIMAPUR, JUNE 13 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) today criticized what it termed as the “jumbo sized DAN Ministry,” and stated that the DAN has ignored the need to downsize for better governance. A press note from the NPCC stated that the DAN has accommodated “every legislator of the DAN as Parliamentary Secretaries and Adviser/Chairman with cabinet status apart from 12 Cabinet ministers.” “For a small state like Nagaland, the downsizing of the ministry for better governance has been made redundant as TR Zeliang in his quest to cling on to the Chief Minister’s chair has stooped blindly to satisfy the greed of his legislators who all seems to have lost

their concern for the people after getting elected with plethora of promises,” the NPCC stated. Referring to the Central government’s move to form a small cabinet for delivering maximum governance despite overwhelming mandate, the

the public to brace themselves for “harder times,” and lamented that the “issue of satisfying the greed of 52 DAN Legislators has taken precedence over governance issues.” The NPCC further opined that governance issues have been “complete-

ly paralyzed in the state.” It stated that even after more than three weeks of forming a new DAN Ministry headed by TR Zeliang, the state is yet to hear/witness any fresh policy being spelled out or initiatives outlined for the welfare of the people and development of the state.

On the contrary, it stated that “open dissatisfaction of DAN legislators and intense lobbying amongst them for more plump portfolios has managed to grab more headlines while relegating all other issues to the backburner and in which the people are the worst sufferers.” The NPCC condemned the DAN government for “failing to honor the mandate of the people to govern the state” and stated that it has rather gotten embroiled in a “game of musical chairs to fight for lucrative portfolios.” It called upon all citizens to condemn the “callous approach towards governance issues and the complete disregard to the voices of the people by the DAN government.”

DIMAPUR, JUNE 13 (MExN): The Nagaland Government Class-1 Contractors’ Union (NGRC-1 CU) today resolved to support the ACAUT Nagaland movement and appealed for early conduct of a public awareness rally in Kohima to create awareness on corruption and unabated taxation. A press note from the NGRC-1CU President, KC Angami and General Secretary, L Pukhato Shohe informed that this was resolved at an interaction with ACAUT Convener, Kezhokhoto Savi at the Union Conference Hall in Kohima on June 13. In its executive meeting, the union further resolved to review its Action Committee in order to safeguard the fundamental rights of its members, including discrimination faced by its members during the participation of open tender process floated by the government. Kezhokhoto Savi, who is also President of the NVCO, highlighted the objective and activities of ACAUT Nagaland during the interaction. He informed members of the union that ACAUT Nagaland “is a people’s movement to stand for the truth.” He asserted that the fight against corruption is solely to protect and save society and to eradicate illegal collection of cash and illegal taxation be at the check-gates or on any highways or business establishments or work places. Excise Commissioner seeks co-operation

DIMAPUR, JUNE 13 (MExN):The Nagaland Commissioner for Excise, Maongwati Aier has written to the Chairman of the Against Corruption and Unabated Taxation (ACAUT)Nagaland,“apologizing”forall“misunderstandings” and for the “misdeeds of departmental officers.” The letter, dated June 12, informed that the Excise Commissioner had allowed destruction of confiscated liquor held in the Malkhana of the Superintendent of Excise, Dimapur on May 26 in the presence of board members, media, mass based organizations and the public. However, on receipt of complaints from ACAUT regarding missing liquor consignments, the Commissioner stated that he had enquired about the same from personnel of the Dimapur Excise department on May 27. It was found that the Dimapur Superintendent of Excise “did not bring the entire consignment as per the claim of ACAUT, for which the show cause notice was issued,” the Commissioner informed. While apologizing for the “misunderstanding,” the Excise Commissioner hoped for co-operation and unity with ACAUT to “wean out all corruption and enforce liquor prohibition in days to come.” tions of public funds meant for infrastructure developmental works, deduction of high percentages from project money/contractors’ bill by way of ‘commission’, taxation imposed by several group/factions, vehicle tax especially on commercial vehicles, illegal collection of cash on highways/checkgates by Nagaland Police/ public organizations/ federations/government departments, municipal/ town councils collecting toll tax on highways without providing any service to the tax payers, donations etc. He further said that the NVCO has in its possession several receipts in original for a truck loaded with building material within Kohima and Dimapur, which charged Rs.100/-

without any signature or reason for the charge. He added that several receipts for collection of money by various councils are also in its possession. He then urged the contractors not to remain silent in the face “illegal taxation.” Savi asserted that this affects not only contractors but the public and the consumers as well and hampers infrastructure projects. Meanwhile, the union urged has every member to renew their membership on or before the end of July and called upon new government class-1 registered contractors to register with the union. The next executive meeting of the NGRC1CU is scheduled to be held on July 17 at the union office in PWD, Kohima.
