KohIMA, JUNE 13 (PTI): Nagaland today got an innovative water solution technology project — solar powered water treatment units — in three villages of the state capital. State Minister for Public Health Engineering (PHE), Noke Wangnao inaugurated the water treatment unit at Tsiesema village about 13 kms away from state capital Kohima while similar two units were installed and made functional in Meriema and Kijumetouma villages. These were the most water scarce villages of Kohima district, Wangnao said in his inaugural address while stating the project was funded by the Union Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation in 2009 under ``The National Rural Drinking Water Programme” (NRDWP). Mumbai based company Adittya Corporation developed the Solar powered water treatment unit, he said adding the three units were valued at Rs 149.61 lakh and would provide drinking water facility to 2,639 people of the three villages. “We have to look for other options and technologies in the form of rain water harvesting, water supply by pumps and revival of traditional wells,” Wangnao added. Dimapur | June 13

The Lotha Eloe Ekhung Dimapur (LEED) has demanded the reinstatement of four Dimapur Women Cell personnel, who were suspended from work in the aftermath of the January 12 rape incident at the State Stadium in Dimapur. The LEED stated that UBI Rose Yanthan, UBSI Mhabeni and, constables Arenla Ao and Yhunile were suspended from service based on allegations of mistreating

the victim. Three youths involved in the act were arrested by the police. The four officers were suspended after it was alleged that the victim (in her teens) was assaulted by duty personnel, present at the time, when she went to lodge a complaint. The officer-in-charge, the duty officer and the two constables were later suspended based on the findings of an internal departmental inquiry. Terming the inquiry as biased and the subsequent findings as not bereft of loopholes, LEED

president Lumbeni Ezung told media persons on June 13 that it took up the case of the four officers. “They were suspended merely based on allegation and without properly ascertaining the facts. They should’ve been provided ample scope to argue their case. But they were given no such opportunity,” said Ezung. Ezung further stated that the LEED along with the Dimapur Rengma Women Hoho submitted a memorandum to the Director General of Police on

Friday in this regard. It was handed over to the district Superintendent of Police. The memorandum, while empathising with the victim, stated that the officers were also victimised as a result of “unscrupulous manipulation... duress and pressure” born of concocted allegation. It further stated that the three accused of the crime, who were forwarded to court after their arrests, are out on bail. It was informed that all three had obtained bail on April 1, 2014.

NPCC censures ‘jumbo sized’ DAN cabinet

DIMAPUR, JUNE 13 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) today criticized what it termed as the “jumbo sized DAN Ministry,” and stated that the DAN has ignored the need to downsize for better governance. A press note from the NPCC stated that the DAN has accommodated “every legislator of the DAN as Parliamentary Secretaries and Adviser/Chairman with cabinet status apart from 12 Cabinet ministers.” “For a small state like Nagaland, the downsizing of the ministry for better governance has been made redundant as TR Zeliang in his quest to cling on to the Chief Minister’s chair has stooped blindly to satisfy the greed of his legislators who all seems to have lost

their concern for the people after getting elected with plethora of promises,” the NPCC stated. Referring to the Central government’s move to form a small cabinet for delivering maximum governance despite overwhelming mandate, the

On the contrary, it stated that “open dissatisfaction of DAN legislators and intense lobbying amongst them for more plump portfolios has managed to grab more headlines while relegating all other issues to the backburner and in which the people are the worst sufferers.” The NPCC condemned the DAN government for “failing to honor the mandate of the people to govern the state” and stated that it has rather gotten embroiled in a “game of musical chairs to fight for lucrative portfolios.” It called upon all citizens to condemn the “callous approach towards governance issues and the complete disregard to the voices of the people by the DAN government.”

India rebuts China's remark on stapled visas new DelhI, June 13 (IAnS): India Friday strongly rebutted China's stand that its giving stapled visas to the people of Arunachal Pradesh was a "goodwill gesture" and said there should be "no discrimination against visa applicants on grounds of domicile or ethnicity". Days after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that Beijing has decided to give stapled visas to people of Arunachal Pradesh, which it lays claim over, "as a gesture of goodwill", Indian Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh said that "..there should be no discrimination against visa applicants on grounds of domicile or ethnicity. China's stapled visa policy causing hardships to people of Arunachal: Tuki AmrohA (up), June 13 (ptI): Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki today said China's policy to issue stapled visas was causing hardships to his state's people and expressed hope that the new government at the Centre would be able to solve all outstanding border issues with the neighbouring country. On the sidelines of a function here, Tuki said China's interference in any matter of Arunachal Pradesh was "illegal" as the matter has been solved long time ago by the Mac-Mohan line. The Chief Minister welcomed the Delhi, during which he acknowledged the Chinese position that in India's "eastern sector (Arunachal Pradesh) relatively big area is in dispute. Pawl (MZP), the largest students' body in the state, is determined to proceed with its intention of constructing Zofate Chawlhbuk (Rest House) at Borapansury in Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) area. The construction is likely to begin from June 25 this year. At a press conference held today at Aizawl Press Club, MZP president Lalhmachhuana told reporters that the students' body is "disappointed with the Chakmas who have become arrogant to the indigenous Mizos.” “To mark and demonstrate that Mizoram is the land discovered by our forefathers at the cost of their lives, we are going to proceed with the construction of Zofate Chawlhbuk at Borapansury from June 25, 2014 and we believe this construction will instil the feeling of nationalism and patriotism among Mizos”, Lalhmachhuana said. "As an example of opposition to

the ingratitude and misbehaviour on the part of Chakma people and to tell the world that Mizoram belongs to the Mizos only, the students' body would construct the Rest House at the proposed site within Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC),” the MZP president affirmed. MZP president then said that the initiative has been taken for the construction of Zofate Chawlhbuk at Boraoansury in 2012 after a settlement was concluded with the state government. With the approval and permission of state government an area of 2500 sq. mts. owned by the department of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumers Affairs had been earmarked for the construction of Zofate Chawlhbuk and on May 2, 2014 measurement was taken at the site. Subsequently, the state government issued construction order on June 11, 2014, the MZP president said.

ral Water Supply and Sanitation Project for Low Income States (RWSSP-LIS) in seven districts of Assam was launched. The ambitious project is aimed at providing clean water to over 13 lakh people of the state in the next six-years. Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi has been claiming to have taken the development of the state to a new height but it has very poor coverage of tap water with only 6.8 per cent of

the population having access to drinking water in their homes. The project envisages plan to construct seven large multi-village Schemes (LMVSs) to improve water supply coverage in the seven project districts. Of these, batch I (from February 2014 – March 2017) will include three LMVS. The World Bank will provide 50 per cent of the total expense while the Central and the state govern-

ments will be contributing 29 per cent and 20 per cent, respectively. The project was launched in Jharkhand recently and is slated to be launched in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh soon. Lead water and sanitation specialist and the World Bank’s task team leader for the project Smita Misra in a statement to the media said, “There is less than 10 per cent tap water coverage in Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar

minorities in both these areas and had their rights suppressed. With the creation of Jiribam district, Zeliangrong people will become automatically minorities and further have their land and resources divided, ZB (M) and ZSUM stated and further hit out at Manipur government saying “In this way, Government of Manipur, the ruling party in power flexing their muscles to extract the maximum land from this district.”

Choudhury, who rushed to the malaria affected areas Friday along with the experts, said: "Four medical teams have been sent to the tribal dominated Gandachera and Longtharai Valley areas". Chief Minister Manik Sarkar held a high-level meeting here Thursday and reviewed the situation. "To deal with the situation effectively, leaves of all doctors, nurses and health workers have been cancelled. Health officials are visiting remote villages and making arrangements to bring the malaria affected people to the government

hospitals," the minister said. "We are contemplating to take punitive actions against the health workers for negligence of their duties and outbreak of the disease in a short span," he added. A helicopter was made ready to ferry the doctors, health staffs and patients in emergency. Five temporary medical camps are functioning in the affected areas to treat those down with malaria and take preventive measures. The government has been advised by the experts to use second-generation medicine instead of traditional medicines to prevent malaria deaths.

‘Access to electricity a human right’ tAmenglong, June 13 (mexn): The Inriangluang (Tamenglong) Chabuam Phuam (ICP) has condemned Manipur’s Power Department for the “continuous and total failure to provide electricity to the denizens of Tamenglong district.” A press release from the ICP President Keiduan R. Panmei stated. ICP also expressed serious concern on elected representatives from the district for “maintaining silence and remaining mute spectator and without any sensitivity for their people as people’s representatives, without any sense of their obligations, forgetting and ensuring the promises made during election engineering to vanish in thin air, and now confining in com-

Pradesh today. The ministry of drinking water and sanitation and the World Bank have jointly developed the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project for Low Income States (RWSSP-LIS).” Informing that to address some of these challenges, she said, “Best practices and learning from states like Kerala, Uttarakhand and Maharashtra will be brought to these states.”

It added, “The failure of the electric supply for extensive period especially dur-

check whether inferior or sub-standard quality were used by contractors or department officials. ICP demanded that those guilty be booked and penalised as per Anti-Corruption laws, Electricity Laws and other relevant laws. It further demanded that all Technical Officials including the Executive Engineer, Assistant, and S.O. etc. must be stationed and available to address the grievances of the public. In the unavoidable circumstances, ICP stated that the Tamenglong public should be taken into confidence and duly informed rather than issuing contradictory, confusing and unacceptable statements.

Students’ Union rebuts Role of teacher in a school and community Yanpha Lishayan Head GB’s statement

M

ass education in Nagaland appears to be in a degrading condition. Education imparted by some teachers is far from satisfactory. Each child has a right to be educated in order to become a productive citizen of a country. The parents and the citizen have a right to know the progress of education of their children. Teachers are accountable for the progress of the children they teach. Some teachers do not feel it to be their responsibility. Thus, they are involved in private tuition and coaching center to get some remuneration. In consequence, commitment on the part of teachers have been reduced to a great extend. There is a need to make the teachers aware of their accountability to their profession. Teacher’s accountability is very important in modern teaching-learning process. To achieve this goal, the accountability of the teachers should be evaluated at frequent intervals. There must be proper supervision of their work. School supervisors should see how far the teachers are accountable in respect to teaching, research, cocurricular activities, use of aids and equipments in the classroom, utilization of local resources for the benefit and development of the students moral and ethical values. The School Inspector should try to visit schools at least once. Thus, the degrading condition of education system in Nagaland can be checked. True teachers are those who consider their job as honorable. Teachers should set an example in citizenship, to endeavor and uphold the dignity of teaching profession on all occasions,

nomic growth. Education system will always have a strong national and local identity shaped by community, culture and language. According to BBC NEWS research report, the latest international comparisons, compiled for Pearson by the Economist Intelligence Unit, emphasize the success of Asian education systems, with South Korea, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong in China rated as the highest performers. The success of top-performing Asian countries reflect a culture in which teachers and schools are highly respected and “teachers, students and parents all take responsibility for education.” It is the right time for the teachers in Nagaland to emulate these Asian countries to achieve and include in the “top-performing” status. Listed below are some definitions of a “TEACHER” that guided me through challenging and rewarding period of my teaching profession. According to: Swami Vivekanand, “The true teacher is he who can immediately come down to the level of the student, transfer his soul to the student’s soul and see through and understand through his mind. Such a teacher can really teach and none else.” Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, “The teacher’s place in society is of vital importance. He acts as the pivot for the transmission of intellectual traditions and technical skills from generation to generation and helps to keep the lamp of civilization burning.” H. G. Wells, “The teacher is the real maker of History.” OREGON Education Associa-

to size up the demands and aspirations of the society, to be dynamic leaders when required. In the bygone days, school teachers were highly respected by the community because they upheld the dignity of teaching profession. They were address as “Master Babu.” One of the greatest of all services can be rendered by teachers to Almighty God, is the education and training of children. The teacher is the yardstick that measures the achievement and aspiration of the nation. The standard of living and attainment of a country is evaluated in and through the work of the teachers. They are real nation builders. Hence, the people of a country are the enlarged replica of their teachers. A school without proper trained and dedicated teacher is just like a body without soul, a skeleton without flesh and blood, a shadow without substance. The teacher is the pivot of any educational system. On teacher rests the success or the failure of the system. If teachers are well educated and if they are intellectually alive and take keen interest in their job, then only, success is ensured. But, if on the other hand, teachers lack training in education they cannot give their heart to their profession, the school system is destined to fail. The teachers must realize that they are the vital component of the school. A teacher can never truly teach unless he/she is still learning. A teacher is like a lamp, unless it continues to burn its own flame, a lamp can never light another lamp. There is a strong link between improving levels of education, training and eco-

tion, “Never in history has it been so important that teachers become involved in the process of uplifting the profession.” Secondary Education Commission, “Every teacher and educationist of experience knows that even the best curriculum and the most perfect syllabus remains dead unless quickened in to life by the right method of teaching and the right kind of teachers.” The best reward I had ever received as a teacher, was the recognition of my teaching method by the Education Ministry, Govt. of Sarawak in Borneo. I was invited to lecture at a Teacher’s Refresher Course organized by the Sarawak Govt. British Educationist in 1963. The second unexpected reward was a brief article that appeared on “Sarawakiana” website, May 1, 2014, by one of my former student wrote, “... I have kept my scrap books for geography. Got good marks for them. I really wish to thank my geography teacher Miss Imlong for inspiring me and my classmates to keep scrap books !! Scrapbooking make learning so wonderful, for life.” Let this TEACHER’S PRAYER by Maria Montessori, Italian educator with a degree in medicine and worked in a clinic for retarded children, and founder of Montessori School, be your daily guiding light: “Help us, O Lord to penetrate into the secret of the child, so that we may know him, love him and serve him according to your laws of justice and following your divine will.” Achilla Imlong Erdican

Narendra Modi govt to stick with UPA Ashok Leyland gets order to LPG sops, vows not to hike prices supply 2,200 buses to Sri Lanka Patna, June 13 (PtI): The price of domestic LPG cylinders will not be increased and the number of subsidised refills given to consumers would continue, Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said today. “LPG will be provided to the consumers at the same rate at which it is being made available now. No additional burden will be imposed on them. The subsidy and the number of subsidised cylinders that people are getting will be continued by our government,” Pradhan told reporters here. About petrol and diesel prices, he said these are big issues and the central government is paying attention to them. “Petrol prices have been out of control since 2006 when it was connected to the market price mechanism. Diesel prices

are still under control with subsidies. “There is a need to increase oil and gas production in the country. The policy should be such that neither the government nor the farmers and poor should feel burdened,” the minister said. Pradhan, who is scheduled to take stock of the oil and gas situation in Bihar at a meeting with Indian Oil Corporation officials during the day, expressed concerns over the low LPG penetration in the state, which is 26 per cent as compared to 45-50 per cent in others. At the meeting, the condition of Barauni refinery in Bihar would be reviewed, besides the status of the proposed gas pipeline between Haldia to Jagdishpur. Low LPG penetration will also be reviewed, he added.

neW DelhI, June 13 (PtI): Hinduja Group flagship company Ashok LeylandBSE -2.37 % has received an order for supplying 2,200 buses to Sri Lanka. With this latest order, the company reinforces its position as the market leader in Sri Lanka and as an important stakeholder in Sri Lankan transport,” it added. “This is a huge order especially at a time when the domestic market is just about to bounce back. econciliation in support of the Yanpha Village Council with regard to your esteemed local daily dated 20th May issue, the Yanpha Students’ Union strongly condemns the action perpetrated by the name called Rapvuo Humtsoe, Head GB Lishayan and also rebuts the statement given by him refuting the Yanpha Village Council’s press statement dated 01/06/2014. Rapvuo Humtsoe instead of seeking apology to the Yanpha Village Council and public for his deed perpetrated by him he concocted the stories which is a “Laughing Stock” and turning the issue as a personal matter between him and the Head GB Roben Humtsoe of Yanpha village. The YSU having a well knowledge that the Head GB of Yanpha village did not give him 2 puras and 1 bhiga of land as stated by him, but the Head GB of Yanpha gave only 1 pura of cultivated land and 1 bhiga land for constructing shelter for his family. The YSU also refuted the statement that the house destroyed by Yanpha public as “Khadi House” is non existing as the house destroyed by public of Yanpha was a combined students’ union office cum committee hall building and a memorial stone which was supposed to be inaugurated on 03/05/2014 which is a clear intent to establish a Lishayan village on the plot allotted for construction of shelter house for his family by Head GB Yanpha. And all the matter of compensation sought by the perpetrator Head GB Lishayan to get ready the time which he is going to pay to the village council for bypassing and disturbing the village council customs, laws and regulations. Myanmar Nagas, MPs Condemn Niki’s statement and NSCN-K’s move

W

ith deep sense of responsibility, the Myanmar Naga concern citizen and senior public leaders had deliberated with the MPs including the NSCN-K’s move for the so call sovereignty in Nay Pyi Taw. The Naga issue which involves thousands of lives for the past sixty years of fruitless struggle is more than enough for Myanmar Nagas now. The Nagas here had decided to maintain the spirit of oneness with every Nagas wherever they are and shall remain “brothers in hand and not brothers in arms” Today we found ourselves thousands of miles short of global community because of the wrong doctrine taught by those leaders not to study Myanmar education and refuse any kind of help from Myanmar govt. Even after sixty years in the wilderness, they still shout sovereignty which they themselves do not believed in it! Such illogical magic has no more home in present context and for which those old boys cannot fool around the people of this generation. Shouting for sovereignty is nothing but something like a child crying for the moon. Interestingly, we see most of the leaders of the NSCN-K are heavily engaged in registering contract in the form of business company. The question is what is their destination? Do they believe in what they do? Are they try to buy sovereignty? In Myanmar, NSCN-K is the only group that federalism, let the Myanmar Naga decide and not the handful of people. In the light of the above statement, Myanmar Nagas would like to ask NSCN-K to give peace and development a chance.

The Naga representatives to the govt. of Myanmar would like to clarify on the news article that appeared in the Morung Express on 6 June 2014, which was published by Niki Sumi of the NSCN/GPRN-K, that the article as such was never source from the people, neither the opinion of the Myanmar Naga nor the views of the representatives but the article is purely the writer’s opinion, miles away from the truth and the ground reality. The Naga MPs would like to make it clear that the present Naga representatives to the govt. of Myanmar are never a nominee but elected in peoples’ election back in 2010. Therefore, we ask upon every Naga citizens not to confuse with such unhealthy publication even in the future. Since we are in the era of democracy, everything we do, we do with the series of consultation with the people and always go with the voice and mandate of the Myanmar Nagas. While we extend our strong support and appreciation to the peace process between The govt. of Myanmar and NSCN-K, we also ask the same not to go for hurry and unfiltered publication that creates confusion and distrust within Naga society. The writer and the NSCN-K alike are hence asked not to publish any article relating Myanmar Nagas without proper consultation in the near future. Hla Tun, MP Khamti Myat Ko, MP Naga Self Administered Zone, Zing Wam, MP Nanyoung

“The Additya Corporation” which promptly came forward to help out with a solution, ie for providing pure drinking water through Ultra Membrane Filtration system fully powered by Solar Energy. “The special advantage that made the technology attractive and suitable for small villages is that the operation of the system is fully automatic with no human intervention required for day to day operation of the system,” he said. He said Additya Solar operated Advanced Membrane Filtration system is designed mainly to give pure drinking water to the people. The system removes upto 99.99 % bacteria from water selectively without hampering other water elements and taste. It is fully automatic, solar operated water treatment unit with very low power consumption & operating costs. Unlike in other RO systems where there used to be lots of water wastage, this system ensures high water recovery upto 90 % and above. “WATSAN Committee should collect water fees from beneficiaries which collection should go for making the whole system efficient and sustainable,” he added.

Kohima, June 13 (mexn): The Northern Angami Students’ Union (NASU) has convened an emergency meeting on June 17 at NAPO Building Kezieki at 2:00 pm. Therefore, all the Unit presidents, general secretaries or representatives and all the senior leaders of NASU have been asked to attend the meeting positively. For any detail, contact General Secretary -9862977797.

Our Correspondent Kohima | June 13

PHED minister Noke Wangnao today inaugurated an innovative water solution technology project – “Solar powered water treatment unit” at Tsiesema village, 13 km away from Kohima. Noke termed the inauguration a symbolic start for all the three similar projects that have been successfully installed in three most water scarce villages of Kohima district – Tsiesema, Meriema and Kijümetouma. Stating that water is a basic necessity for the survival and development of human beings, he said “It is essential that water supply is in sufficiency as well as of good quality free from all disease causing germs and excess chemicals.” He, however said about 1/9th of the world’s population does not have access to clean drinking water source as yet. Even in India, it is estimated that about 37.7 million people are affected by water borne diseases annually. About 1.5 million children are said to be dying annually due to diarrhea alone. In Nagaland, despite the fact that huge infrastruc-

tures have been created for providing drinking water supply to villages during the last few decades, the Government in general and PHE Department in particular are facing unprecedented challenges in their mission to provide water security in the villages and at household level, he added. Out of total 1530 villages/ habitations in the state, 1027 villages/ habitations (about 67 %) fall under partially covered category with water supply level less than 40 litres per capita per day. Most of these villages which have been provided with drinking water facility at one time, have actually far outlived their design life needing urgent repair and replacement which requires huge funds. Many of the villages are situated on top of hills with very small and undependable water sources or with a water source which has completely dried up due to several factors. There is an urgent need to do something for such villages in peril, he said. The minister also stated that in order to really bring about a suitable drinking water supply system, the beneficiary community has to come forward to take complete responsibility –

water supply operation and maintenance presently. For this, the government has set up WATSAN Committees in as many as 1142 villages under the communitization program in the state. He said Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, GOI , under the new program launched in 2009 – The National Rural Drinking Water Program (NRDWP), states national goal to provide every rural person with adequate safe water for drinking, cooking, and other domestic basic needs on a sustainable basis. The emphasis is to give water supply as much as possible through piped water supply system instead of other systems. In Nagaland, he said, due to the peculiar nature

of the topography of the land and the unique cultural and social practices, more and more villages are emerging where all primarily preferred options such as water supply by gravity or bore wells are not possible. “This entails that we have to look for other options and technologies in the form of rain water harvesting system, water supply by pumping, revival of traditional wells, etc. The three villages where we have currently installed Solar Powered Water Treatment Unit are ones of such categories where all other conventional methods are not feasible economically,” the minister said. He said the people of Tsiesema, Meriema and Kijümetouma have been very

fortunate to get the chance to drink the best quality of water which is like a dream come true especially for the women and children who will no longer need to walk for long distances regularly for fetching water as done before. He encouraged the villagers to take great care of the created assets so that the installed systems may be able to give good service for a long time to come. Er. Kevisekho Kruse, Chief Engineer, PHED in his technical report said Tsiesema Bawe, Meriema & Kijumetouma villages are amongst the most water scarce villages in Kohima district with no economically feasible gravity sources nearby. Despite the various initiatives undertaken by the Department in the past to ease out the drinking water supply problems, there has not been any proper solution. As such, the people in these villages have been experiencing great hardship for all these years for not getting safe drinking water, especially during lean periods spanning over January to May every year. It was in such a difficult time when the Department got in touch with the reputed Mumbai based Engineering Company –

that in the days leading to the December 27 incident, “the Assam police refused to venture into Rengma inhabited areas despite repeated pleas to come and protect the villagers.” It censured what it said was the “cowardly attitude of the security forces” during the unrest and violence. “The Hamren SP killing should be a wakeup call for the Assam police and a lesson to be learnt that terrorism can strike anyone anywhere,” the RNPC stated. It further extended condolences to the bereaved families.

The geopolitics of the World Cup Pepe Escobar asia times Online

O

ne of the defining images of the World Cup - so far - has been the sight of the Mannschaft - aka the German team - fraternizing with Pataxo Indians a few hundred meters away from the spot where Brazil was "discovered" in 1500. Call it a European re-discovery of the exotic tropics. Then there's the English Team frolicking by the seaside, inside a military base, with the Sugarloaf as gorgeous backdrop, backed up by a scientific expert in humidity and industrial ventilators aplenty (after all there's the Rumble in the Jungle against Italy this Saturday "deep in the Amazon rainforest", as British tabloids tell it.) The World Cup - the greatest show on earth kicks off just as a relentless Made in the West (client states included) anti-Chinese and anti-Russian propaganda/downright vilification shatters all known hysteria levels. And that means the BRICS are a target; in the case of Brazil, an emerging power sitting strategically over the bulk of the Amazon rainforest just as progressive Latin American integration has dared to turn the Monroe Doctrine into (branded) toilet paper. Recently, Brazil brought at least 30 million people out of poverty. China invests in medical care and education. Russia refuses to be bullied as in the drunkard Yeltsin years. In the past few years, the World Cup has been all about the BRICS: South Africa in 2010, Brazil now, and Russia in 2018. Qatar in 2022 - if it ever happens - is more like a Gulf petrodollar-fueled bribery racket gone wrong. It's amusing to check

how the City of London which loves Russian cash, craves Chinese investment and has a soft spot for Brazilian soft power - takes it all in. With an added strand of British humor, they could easily have interpreted the Rumble in the Jungle as NATO battling it out in the middle of the much-coveted rainforest (think the water wars of the near future). That other World Cup And then, just two days after the start of the World Cup, Brazilian neighbor Bolivia hosts no less than a G-77+ China summit actually 133 UN membernations, the whole thing presided over by Evo Morales, who is a sort of Andean distant cousin of the Pataxos who so fascinated the Germans. Call it also the meeting of ALBA (the Bolivarian Alternative to the Americas, which includes Cuba) and the BRICS (only Russia won't be present). American exceptionalists are furious that the BRICS are spearheading the transition towards a multipolar world - something that's already at play in football (think Spain, Germany, Italy on one side, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay on another). Emulating football, a South-to-South counterpunch to the hegemony of the industrialized North is also in play. Brazil, China, and Russia, in their different strategies, are all betting on more South-South integration - from the Banco del Sur (the Bank of the South) to the upcoming BRICS development bank (there's a crucial BRICS summit next month in Brasilia), on the way to a more egalitarian system that ideally could be financed by a percentage of foreign debt, a percentage of military expenditure and a global tax on speculative

financial transactions. And it's never enough to remember that the G-77 is about decolonization; no Empire of Bases; and no interference of the NSA-coordinated Orwellian/Panopticon complex in the Global South. "T

udo bem" — all good — as the Brazilians say. Well, almost. With a nationwide spasm of excitement but also tear gas, the country that sees itself as the artful soul of football but is conflicted about spending billions of dollars on hosting its showcase tournament kicked off one of the most troubled World Cups ever. It roared to life Thursday with a 3-1 win for the home team in a stadium barely readied on time for the first of 64 matches in 12 cities. The end of Brazil's 64year wait for the World Cup to return to the country of Pele wasn't all parties and samba. There were protests in five host cities and chants against President Dilma Rousseff. But it wasn't close to the chaos that wracked last year's tuneup tournament, the Confederations Cup, when hundreds of thousands poured into the streets. After a funky opening ceremony featuring J-Lo in low-cut sparkling green and dancers dressed as trees, Brazil's beloved national team, the star-studded Selecao, made an earnest if not brilliant start to the serious business of re-conquering planet futebol. Already the only nation with five world titles, a sixth victory in the July 13 final could assuage much — but not all — public anger about spending $11.5 billion on the tournament. Brazil's first opponent was a resilient but ulti-

mately outclassed Croatian side. The Itaquerao Stadium, which suffered chronic delays and worker deaths in its construction, was a sea of buttercup yellow, the color of the national team. Brazilian fans expect this crop of stars to deliver not just victory but football as art, the "Jogo bonito" — the beautiful game — that was the hallmark of great Brazilian teams. The inaugural game had everything aficionados love — passion, drama, spectacle, goals and a refereeing controversy that immediately set fingers wagging on Twitter, showing how players, officials and organizers must live under the microscope of unprecedented social media scrutiny. Brazilian fans call themselves "torcidas" — derived from the Portuguese word "to twist" and evoking how football puts them through the wringer. Brazil made a nightmare start. Marcelo looked stunned, the crowd of 62,103 wailed and grown men watching in bars let out howls of despairing laughter when the Brazilian defender scored an own-goal that gave Croatia an unlikely 1-0 lead after just 11 minutes. "I'm very emotional, happy, and happy that it's over," said spectator Ricieri Garbelini, visibly drained. "I was nervous for five minutes at the beginning, and at the end." The mood lifted when Neymar lived up to his hype and tied the game for Brazil in the 29th minute, unleashing an ear-

post-capitalist neo-colonization to outright criminalization of the poor. And among these movements we find, not surprisingly, Global South icon Diego "Hand of God" Maradona, who said this week, "FIFA gets $4 billion (out of the Cup) while the champion nation gets $35 million. This is wrong. The corporation is delivering a death blow to football". Football is war Much has also been made of the parallel between hyper-capitalist globalization - as graphically expressed by the World Cup and the megabusiness of contemporary football - and nationalism. Well, the world is not and will never be flat; it's a Himalaya/Pamir/Hindu Kush of varied inequality altitudes, subjected to snow avalanches including

trade, commerce, immigration flows and technology breakthroughs. None of these are able to shatter national fibers. It's still "us" against "them", as much in the Global South defining Americans and Europeans as "gringos" as in swathes of the industrialized North patronizing/profiting from the "exotic" Global South. There's nothing postnational about the World Cup. In the terrain of hardcore geopolitics, the highly centralized European Union is fragmenting under the weight of a bunch of right-wing or extreme right-wing nationalist parties; in football, the major difference, compared to hardcore geopolitics, is that there's not only one exceptionalist power but a handful, from Spain to Brazil, from Germany to Italy, from Argentina to France. Rinus Michels, coach

of the Clockwork Orange, the Dutch national team that startled the world in 1974 (alas, they didn't win), once said that football is war (compare it to maverick director Samuel Fuller, who said cinema is a battlefield). The World Cup is war by other means; an officially sanctioned, ritualized clash of nationalisms. So it's all about Pick your Tribe; only that after your tribe is out of play you switch to another, replacement tribe - which any effete epicurean would arguably define as Italy. After all they have the most stirring national anthem. They've got the best food and the best clothes. And of course, they've got Andrea "the Magician" Pirlo. A new way of playing ball? Brazil, widely praised as The Land of Football,

also happens to be the global leader in reduction of carbon emissions, according to recent research published by Science magazine, managing at the same time to increase agricultural production while saving more rainforest. And yet, and as usual with all things Brazil, all things World Cup got incredibly messy - a running metaphor of the typical assortment of ills faced by the struggling Global South. Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has been forced to appeal to the historical stereotype of the Brazilian "cordial man" and stress tolerance, diversity, dialogue and even sustainability, as well as condemning racism and prejudice, to exhort the population to forget about their troubles and welcome an army of foreign visitors. That's a given, considering the average Brazilian is heartwarming and exceedingly friendly; the devil is in the details - as in, for instance, at least 200,000 poor people evicted from their places or at least threatened with eviction, to make way for major works bound to increase "urban mobility". Well, only 10% of these works were finished, due in most cases to massive corruption. In Rio, not a single real was invested in a chaotic transport system serving the proletarian peripheral sprawl. Wildly popular Lula, when he was still the president of Brazil in 2009, said that no taxpayer money would be spent on the World Cup. Well, not directly; most of the funding came from the National Bank for Economic Development, a bank that lends money to banks. Builders of new stadia also benefited from generous tax ex-

emptions. The bottom line is that Rousseff 's government ended up losing the media battle. Over and over, Rousseff has had to explain that the Cup will cost a fraction of what is invested in health and education (that's open to debate.) Virtually half of the Brazilian population is not convinced. And still what's certain is that a Brazilian World Cup win automatically ensures Rousseff's re-election. But the recent wave after wave of protests has in fact transcended the current administration. It's as if all these diverse social movements have been manifesting the ultimate utopian desire; to erase, in one go, centuries of injustice perpetrated by Brazil's notoriously rapacious and arrogant/ignorant elites which have always implemented total political and economic exclusion based on noxious race and class prejudice. So this whole drama is not simply about "antineoliberal" or "anti-capitalist" stirrings. It goes way beyond nationalism. And it could be way more transcending than the textbook for a revolution using football as a pretext. Whatever the final result of this war revolving around a football, Brazil could yet teach a lesson to the whole Global South. In victory, and even in glorious defeat, Brazil may end up finding the stamina to pursue a new strategic overture - a new, non-arrogant, non- neocolonial, non-weaponized, non-exceptionalist way to lead and exercise power, build alliances and clinch grand geopolitical agreements in a multipolar world. A new way of playing ball. So let this New Great Game begin.

splitting roar from the crowd and across the nation. In the rundown city of Indaiatuba, a two-hour drive from Sao Paulo, tattooed men in undershirts

celebrated by pounding on restaurant tables. Fans watched the game wearing shirts bearing the name of the 22-year-old. Even football-loving Pope Francis got a touch of World Cup fever. He sent a video message on Brazilian television before the match, saying the world's most popular sport can promote peace and solidarity. Demonstrating the love-hate relationship Brazilians have with developed with this World Cup, the stadium crowd made hairs stand on end with its rousing rendition of the national anthem, but also chanted against Rousseff and FIFA, the governing body of football. The crowd booed Rousseff again when the stadium's jumbo screens showed her celebrating Neymar's second goal —

scored from the penalty spot in the 71st minute. He thrust his arms in the air and the nation did likewise. The Croatians were furious that the Japanese referee, Yuichi Nishimura, let himself be hood-winked by Fred. The Brazilian striker won the penalty by making it look as though he'd been hauled down by Croatian defender Dejan Lovren. "If that was a penalty, we should be playing basketball," said Croatia coach Niko Kovac. "That is shameful, this is not a World Cup referee. He had one kind of criteria for them and another for us." Oscar scored the third for Brazil, and the celebration was on. But despite repeated promises from government officials that Brazil would be ready, there were problems at the sta-

dium: The lighting failed in one corner, flickering off, on, off and finally back on again after the late-afternoon kickoff. Brazilian organizers blamed a fault with the power supply and said it would be looked at before the next match. There were protests in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Brasilia and Belo Horizonte. Police fired canisters of tear gas and stun grenades to push back more than 300 demonstrators who gathered along a Sao Paulo highway. Police also used tear gas against protesters in central Rio. "I'm totally against the Cup," said protester and university student Tameres Mota. "We're in a country where the money doesn't go to the community, and meanwhile we see all these millions spent on stadiums."

oor children around the globe come up with creative ways to make their own footballs, kicking rolled up tape, fishing nets or even broken off dolls' heads to play the world's most popular sport. An indestructible blue ball being distributed in needy regions holds quite a promise for such kids: It will never pop, even when kicked over shards of glass or rocks. It will never wear out, even under extreme temperatures. Lisa Tarver and husband Tim Jahnigen set out to distribute their One World Futbols to children who have never had a decent ball, or if they did, it deflated or shredded after a few weeks of play on rough surfaces. In just four years — the cycle between World Cups — they have shipped more than 850,000 soccer balls. They estimate more than 30,000,000 children have played with them. Some 15,000 One World Futbols have gone to Brazil, host country of the World Cup kicking off Thursday. Jahnigen and Tarver, from the San Francisco Bay Area, sell the balls for $39.50 and donate one for every one purchased. In addition, they work directly with charities and sponsors to get balls to the neediest areas. They have sent balls to children in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, to wartorn towns in Africa and to remote villages in the Brazilian rain forest. "I love it, having traveled to different parts of

the world and seeing how inventive kids get with soccer balls," said Julie Foudy, a former U.S. national team midfielder and TV analyst whose own kids use the ball. "... It's not until you go abroad and you see — remember Sissi who played for Brazil? — Sissi always tells a story how for a soccer ball when she was younger they would take a doll's head, they'd rip the doll off the doll's head and they'd wrap tape around the head and that became their ball." This ball never goes flat, inflates itself after losing air and remains playable even if punctured, thanks to closed cell foam and similar material to those popular rubber Crocs sandals. That means no extra equipment required, such as a pump or needle. The balls also can be used for other sports such as volleyball. "The ball is great. I'm fortunate to be involved with a lot of things that I'm passionate about, helping in ways that go beyond the soccer field, so I enjoy it," said American star Landon Donovan, the L.A. Galaxy forward. In Brazil, One World Futbol has partnered with several organizations to run programs during the World Cup. Tarver will be in the country for two weeks. The organization Lionsraw will be operating out of Curitiba, bringing volunteers together to promote change for young people and teach children and youth about health, gender respect and tolerance using sports and the One World Futbols. the country to help homeless youth transform their lives through the positive influence of soccer. One World Futbol founding sponsor, Chevrolet, will be handing out about 5,300 balls to organizations and schools across Brazil. And there are others, like Love.Futbol, making similar distributions in communities with new fields or those nearly complete at Curitiba and near Sao Paulo's Itaquerao stadium. Brazil hosts Croatia there Thursday night in the World Cup opener. "What we see is the programs that are working with the most at-risk communities in the world, and for the first time can continue their programs year-round because they don't have to stop every few weeks and wait another month or two or three months until a ball can be purchased or a ball is donated before they can continue," Tarver said. She recently visited Haiti, where a coach named Honoré Ernso at the country's largest slum — Cité Soleil in the Port-au-Prince area — used to have just one ball and would be forced to stop coaching if there was a problem with it. Tarver met him at a clinic on a previous trip, then found him again in May, when she delivered more balls. "He's been able to keep those practices going and he's doing it from the good of his heart," Tarver said. "Those kids are going to school and going to his soccer trainings. That was just amazing."

The Opaque Reality: The Psychosis of Violence

n a setting like Nagaland, the word 'violence' is not a fresh lexis as it has become part and parcel of daily vocabulary that both young and old are not unaware of owing to the complication that engulfs us and in the process we have become part of it. In spite of its recurrence, perhaps it is not safe to say that we know what it is as when we are asked to give a precise definition on violence, we may find it more complex than what we have actually speculated about the term. This article, for that reason, is an attempt to present to the readers the different forms of violence that prevails in our family, church, community, social organizations and beyond. Human being is a complex being conditioned by the system and function of his/ her environment. When this system becomes the source of identity, truth becomes relative and reality becomes opaque where we fail to recognize the potentialities of a human being. Nagaland is a land of histories and narratives where even horrors of yesteryears are internalized and cocooned as an identity which has almost become a positive legacy if faced with horrors. When people define violence as something hostile- brutal with the fact that physical damnation is violence, we fail to understand how it affects the total being of a person and humanity at large. The WHO and figures like Nelson Mandela view that violence is something that goes against the realization of being fully human. Violence is something likened to a disease and whichever way predictable. But what concerns in our context to-

day is the ignorance of what violence is to us because we have missed the psychological mechanism which demeans and ignores the existence of a human being when we term violence. Did we get the meaning of violence inadequately in our context? One day a young girl is raped, murdered and laid death in the pool of blood they say. She is there dead and cold and the observers leave the scene feeling sorry for the innocent girl. But wait a minute, where is the culprit? Ok, the police traced him and locked him up somewhere in the so called detention – lock up and he is termed “the rapist”, the “accused”. But the wave of this incident travels far and wide, triggering every family, going news headlines and so on. May be the accused is guilty and confessed he is sorry. But the intensity of his crime and hideoushorrendous act is not sufficed without understanding the violent act he has done to humanity and not the girl alone. If humanist of both sides (secular and Christian humanism) seek to preserve and conserve the worth and identity, the rights and dignity of a person, the accused as discussed has destroyed the so called ‘humanness’ of the girl. The affect of his act done to the girl does not end there. We fail to understand how he has affected the being of a person and which could hamper and kill the later generations and humanity. Well, sounds unconvincing maybe but what is violence? We understand violence in terms of only physical harm but we need to see beyond this conventional definition. Violence simply means deprivation of human needs

which deprive humans to be fully human. Thus, following the definition of prominent peace scholar Johan Galtung, any human action and institutional practice which deprive human survival, well being, freedom and identity is violence. The forms of violence consists of actions, harsh words, attitudes, oppressive structures/systems which cause physical, psychological, social or environmental damage and prevent people from reaching their full human potential. One form of violence which is evident in our Naga family is cultural violence where what is wrong morally is made acceptable by culture. Thus, cultural violence legitimizes certain oppressive practices. For example, woman are supposed (expected) to keep quiet when men folks are talking, and they are supposed to serve and not complain. Then what does it mean to be fully human? What is full human potential? Full human potential means freedom from physical, psychological, social, environmental, economic and political problems. The forms of violence and their problems are interconnected. In the discussion below we will see several forms of violence that hinders the attainment of full human potential. Violent Actions: Any damage or harm done on a person physically is physical violence. Handicapping a person and paralyzing him from making use of his/her body is physical violence because it has failed the person from doing what he/she can do. In this sense his/her rights over his or her body has been deprived so this means that he/she is not able to fulfil his/

her full human potential. Violent Words: When our words hurt people it affects their mental well being. It can create negative feelings towards oneself or towards another person. It disturbs the person and deprives the person from behaving normal. The violence caused by words can bring disharmony between people and between communities as well. It can affect the whole being of the individual and deprive the person from attaining full human potential. In our context today it could also mean wrong information and hate messages that create communal conflict. Violent Attitudes: Stereotyping or preconceived notion of a person or people or tribe or village and so on is a form of violence. When attitudes prompt a person to hurt others it is violence. Attitudinal violence brings social problems. Example: in the Naga society women are less privileged comparing with the men-folks. We do not blame the men folks but we do point the patriarchal form of society which conditions all of us. Women are still hesitant to be vocal in any arena of decision makings. When there is favouritism in appointment of jobs there is violence. And favouritism is based on religion, clan, gender, and tribe and so on which creates social insecurity and unequal distribution of resources is violence. It is violence because the right of the person to get the job is deprived and he/she is not able to exercise his/ her full human potential. Violent Structures and Systems: There is violence when the structure and system compels a person to

adopt unfair and unjust practices. When a person is put in a situation which forces him/ her to do something unethical it is structural and systemic violence. For example, many vouches for this ignoble fact that some offices in Nagaland refuse to take forward any files unless some tips are paid for the work to be executed. This structure and system is thus a form of violence because it has deprived a person from acting justly. And more so deprived from being what a human ought to be that is abiding the ethical norms. Many people assume that violence has to do with physical aspect alone and the greater effect that it has on other facets such as psychological, relational, structural, political, economic and cultural violence are made dormant to the people. If one is to engage genuinely and dig beneath the surface, indeed, the other forms of violence can become more detrimental to humanity than the actual physical violence itself. The responsibility to respond and encounter the defective system that overwhelms us lies with every individual and more so the intellectual community, the church, and the theologically trained individuals have a big share as transforming the faulty structure/concept is a mandate for Christians and never a choice. Change can come only when one starts initiating as at the present juncture the Nagas have come to a state where the potentials have the upper hand over the actual. The evolution of the wedding dress

I

Lindsay Baker | BBC

t’s the default setting for brides in Western culture, but what does the ubiquitous white wedding dress actually represent? Not quite what we have always assumed, it turns out. The tradition of brides wearing white has never symbolised virginity or purity, according to a new exhibition that explores the garment’s history – the white bridal gown’s primary function was ostentatiousness. “The connotation of purity was not important,” curator Edwina Ehrman tells BBC Culture. “It was about wealth. Throughout the 18th and 19th Century, women who could afford it got married in white.” In the days when washing was done painstakingly by hand with a washboard, a white dress was almost impossible to clean thoroughly. “It was a garment you just wore once, so it was only for the very wealthy.” The white (or ivory) wedding dress – popularised by Queen Victoria, who wore one at her wedding to Prince Albert in 1840 – has certainly endured. There’s no denying its totemic power. For many brides it encapsulates a hopeful, romantic nostalgia, and many designers. “It can have a trans-

formative effect,” says Ehrman. “And if you’ve already been living with your partner or even if you’ve had children you may want to wear white at your wedding because you feel it marks a new phase in your relationship.” White is the warmest colour So quintessentially bridal has the white dress become that now when a bride chooses to tie the knot wearing another colour, it’s considered daring and rebellious: think burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese in her purple, corsetted dress by Vivienne Westwood, for instance; singer Gwen Stefani in a dramatic dip-dyed number by John Galliano; or actresses Anne Hathaway, Jessica Biel and Reese Witherspoon all of whom recently wed in unconventional pink. Yet getting married in pink, purple, yellow, red (the typical bridal gown colour in China) or any other colour for that matter is nothing new in Western culture, nor particularly irreverent, says Ehrman. “Over the centuries, brides who were interested in fashion have often got married in different colours. And they would wear them many times afterwards, altering them over the years to fit in with fashion, or to fit a changing figure.” And it was common for women not to buy

Years passed. My father died. As a young boy, I thought to myself, "Nobody can hurt me now..." But the memories of that night continued to haunt me. It left a scar in me. It left a 'hole in my soul' in 'the shape of my father'. Domestic Violence is unpleasant. The fear and pain that it causes is unimaginable. When you have been a victim of domestic violence, it continues to affect you. But I have learned to accept my past as it has been. I have moved on... I am fine... I am okay now... I am happy. I don't know if I will ever be able to erase the painful memories of my childhood. But I stay hopeful. After all, 'hope' is a beautiful thing. It kept me alive. It gave me the strength to go on...and on...and on.

"SEYIEVIKO!"... I woke up to the sound of my father screaming at me. He had been drinking again. It was midnight. I was six years old and had been deep asleep. So I had not heard him repeatedly calling my name. That made him angry...very angry. Before I could even make out what was happening, my father slapped me on the face. The next few moments were terrible. My father pulled me by my hair and slapped me repeatedly, over and over again. I could hear my mother crying and begging him to stop. But what could she do on her own? She was bleeding from the nose. She had been beaten up as well... After what seemed like an eternity, my father left the room. I was so terrified I could not even cry. I was hurt and in pain. But somehow, my (Follow Viko Peseyie’s personal page physical exhaustion forced me to go on Facebook @ https://www.facebook.com/PagesFromMyMind ) back to sleep.

a new dress for the occasion, but to simply get married in their best existing outfit. Bridal fashion adapted to wartime as best it could. “People did what they could during World War II,” explains Ehrman. “They would borrow a dress or wear their service uniform. Women in the armed forces could also hire a dress, and some brides made dresses out of curtain fabric. We have an example in the show of a buttercupprint dress made of lightweight upholstery fabric.” Post-war, the mid-calf ballerinalength design became popular, favoured by women who had careers. There were some spectacular one-off gowns, too. Margaret Whigam, one of the first It girls, wore a big, showy gown by Norman Hartnell. “She was beautiful, rich and she loved the camera – she was the perfect client for Hartnell,” says Ehrman. “That was not a garment that could be altered for another occasion.” In the swinging 1960s, singer Lulu sported a white hooded, fur-trimmed maxi coat over a mini dress and high boots. The Thea Porter-designed empire-line dress displayed in the show – “demure but flirty” as Ehrman puts it – in devore velvet, is quintessentially 1970s. “The reason the white wedding dress has survived is because it can evolve and remain fashionable –it persists because it can be reinvented.” Designer Jenny Packham agrees. “The most memorable wedding outfits for me are those that define an era from a fashion perspective,” she says. So what era influences Packham’s bridal wear the most? “The 1930s are always a great source of inspiration – a wonderfully decadent and glamorous era between the wars, it was a design explosion of divine proportions.” And how does she predict the wedding dress will evolve? “The bridal dress must stand out as a piece of clothing… At the moment there is a comfortable stand-off between the red carpet and the aisle. Neither wants to look like the other.” Alice Temperley, whose embellished Jean dress is displayed in the show, is influenced by the silhouettes and spirit of the 1920s. Why has the romantic, ultra-feminine gown endured for so long in her view? “The wedding dress is traditional, timeless and defies trends,” she says. Making a statement It’s all in the detail, agrees Gareth

Pugh, who has created stage outfits for the likes of Lady Gaga and Kylie Minogue – and whose dramatic-butromantic bridal dress for stylist Katie Shillingford features in the exhibition. “A costume for the stage and a wedding dress both have very specific roles to fulfil,” Pugh tells BBC Culture. “However, the approach and process are very different. Usually with stage costume, comfort and the ability to move around easily are top of the list, along with being visually striking. “With a wedding dress there are layers of subtlety that you can achieve that you just can’t replicate on stage – usually because a wedding dress is viewed in much closer quarters. And a bride is more willing to forego comfort.” And how does Pugh think the wedding dress will evolve in the future? “I think the idea of dressing up and presenting a side of oneself that is a fantasy will always appeal,” he says. “For most, a wedding is perhaps the one day where they are allowed free rein to really go to town. There will always be a niche market for the traditional white meringue, but I like the idea of the dress being a little more personal – something that is made with love and care, something that takes time and patience - a lot like the marriage itself.” And like marriage itself, wedding attire continues to evolve. As Edwina Ehrman puts it, “Gay weddings and cross-cultural weddings are both examples of how new traditions are being established.” All of which feeds into the multi-billion-dollar global wedding-attire industry. “There is definitely a spirit of competitiveness around weddings now – the bridezilla or groomzilla phenomenon is real,” says Ehrman. And the alternativewedding bridezilla who wishes to make a conscious statement through her wedding can be just as competitive – in fact, some are ditching the white wedding dress to make a point about gender politics. That’s nonsensical, says Ehrman. “If you want to wear a coloured dress on your wedding day, or trousers, or go barefoot, go ahead. But the idea that wearing a white wedding dress is going to somehow enslave you is absurd – equality and respect are what matter in a marriage, not what you wear at your wedding. When it comes to modern bridal wear we are just incredibly lucky to have such a diversity of choice.”

United they tax, Divided they prosper Peter Rutsa: Worse nightmare than last night’s! The movement for 'One Govt, One Tax' and the cry of FNR and various NGO's to stop factional killings have given birth to a new virus. A virus which has succeeded in stopping and reducing factional clashes on one hand but have fantastically united them in taxation! Now underground cadres from various factions are seen in towns entering shops one after the other acknowledging each other with discreet nods. The movement has successfully united them in TAXATION. I shared this fear during the start of ACAUT movement. That too much aggression against UG's will make these parasites, predators and scavengers too friendly with each other. It has come true! Our revolt against their intolerable forms taxation have made them all friends. It was sad to see them killing each other but it’s even sadder, in fact so heartbreaking to see them united in taxation, though divided in faction. Donations are usually forced out peoples throats. While tax collectors carry pen, paper and pistols. Not calculators. Cadres who failed in School because they thought 2+2 was 8. They still think that everything sold in a shop are all profit hahaha..And that it is illegal for anybody to get rich except them. Among Imchen: One of them came today, took out a bottle of Aiko mineral water from the fridge,(might have thought it was his kitchen Lol) drank and left without paying. Later a phone call came asking for poisa! Jack Jagoi: Nagaland is the only place on earth where Donations are DEMANDED, and Taxes, EXTORTED. Ao Naga Kichuchar: I would like SUGGEST ACAUT to forget about the ALCOHOL issue since it is easily available just across the border and FOCUS on ONE GOVT.-ONE TAX till it becomes a SUCCESS. Lima Lcr: If these things should really cease, the only solution is to allow to keep licensed assault gun in every shops and stores.

A Future free from Fear Ben Akum: I still remember the time, during the 90s, when there were gunshots and bombings every now and then in and around Kohima. One night I ran with my dog to our neighbors’ house for protection because my dad thought the house which we were living back then was not strong enough to protect us from Bullets. I ran imagining the scenes in the movies where the hero is running across the border and the bullets are landing just 1 foot away from his legs. One day as I was returning from school I heard that there were 3 time bombs planted inside the tunnel near the Alder College road. Fear caught the better of me and I, along with my friends, took a u-turn and walked all the way back to the school. Just 2 hours later, I heard the sound of the bombs echoing above my head and what an horrifying sound it was for an 11 year old boy. I grew up in such horrifying environment. Such were the fears created in the minds of the people by our honorable national workers. I believe such fears are still hovering in the minds of many Naga people even today. Back then our national workers has incited so much fear among their own people that the idea of fighting for our independence, from the Indian government, never crossed my mind. Infact, we consider our national workers to be aliens from Star Wars who had landed on our land to destroy us. No individual or organization had the courage to boldly stand against their barbaric influence because every voice that was raised against them were either erased or suppressed by guns and those voice that were suppressed I don’t blame any of them because Nobody Wants To Die. Praise God, the situation is quite better these days. The wild rise of educated people among the Nagas has revolutionized the Naga society today. Education has in a way lifted all the fears created by our national workers. Today, Nagas are no longer a slave to any organization nor are we scared of our national workers anymore. Enough is Enough, we cannot live under such fears anymore. We are free people and it is the right of every Naga to pursue his/her dreams without any fear. I truly appreciate the bold step taken by ACAUT for the Naga society. May God be with the Nagas.

They Nailed it Again.... Richard Belho: There was a time when driving on the highway in Assam was considered a menace because Tyre repairing shops on the highways used to plant shoe nails on the road 2 or 3 km before the shop's location. These dirty tricks helped them to get steady stream of customers. Now of late, i personally have encountered the same nails between Kohima and Dimapur and that left me wondering whether we have now adopted these dirty tricks in our own land or whether it is just a coincidence. What is surprising is that these very shoe nails which are almost extinct still finds its existence on our Dimapur Kohima Road. Would like to know if any members had similar experience. Samuel Vio: That's wilful damage/intent to damage other's property and is a criminal offence. Hope they are caught in the act and prosecuted, or perhaps taught a nice lesson by the youth of the area. Nokho Nyekha Naga: Oh yes, I'd experienced last year. Lucky us, the nail was big and didn't give any problem to the car till Dimapur. Once we reached, it was my cousin who noticed it. When we removed the nail, psst!!! It went, we had to change the tyre immediately.

Modi govt setting a cracking pace for babus, and journos too New Delhi, JuNe 13 (iANS): The cracking pace with which the new government is moving - taking decisions and even announcing them immediately - is taking top government officials unawares. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to invite the SAARC leaders to the swearing-in, the short bilateral talks he held with the South Asian leaders the following day, the prime minister’s decision to make Bhutan the destination of his first bilateral visit, his decision to disband ministerial committees and the directive to keep offices neat and clean - all these have left the bureaucrats literally panting for breath. As against the ponderous pace of the UPA government when decisions were taken after much deliberation and announced through the proper channels, the new BJP-led NDA government has been moving at an almost breakneck speed. And it has not just been the speed - the new government is far more communicative too. Beginning from Prime Minister Modi, one of the most tech-savvy politicians who keeps his follow-

Tough love energises bureaucrats

New Delhi, JuNe 13 (ReuteRS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has told India’s civil servants to throw out dusty files, clear clutter from corridors and may even demand that they work a six-day week. The apparatchiks? They are apparently loving it. Within days of taking office, Modi issued 10 administrative commandments. The first: Build Up Confidence in the Bureaucracy. “This is unprecedented. Power has been shifted,” said Suhaib Ilyasi, editor of Bureaucracy Today, a professional journal. “The bureaucrats are feeling happy - even though they will have to work harder,” added Ilyasi. In a readers’ poll, more than 70 percent backed Modi’s shakeup.

It’s a huge turnaround for a state apparatus that, despite recruiting its top cadres through tough competitive examinations, has been ranked Asia’s worst by one political risk consultancy. In a two-pronged attack, Modi has targeted slovenliness in government offices often grimy places where red spit from chewed betel nut stains walls, toilets are rarely cleaned, and discarded furniture and rotting files clog corridors. In an edict seen by Reuters he demanded “hygiene and cleanliness”. Offices must be “cleared and spruced up”; each department should scrap 10 archaic rules; and forms should be no longer than one page.

Change has been dramatic at government buildings across the colonial-era heart of New Delhi. Outside the Agriculture Ministry, unused files and old computers were piled up to be taken to a junk yard. Missing ceiling tiles have been replaced in passageways to cover loose cables. The Health Ministry issued a statement saying that 35 steel cabinets, three water coolers and 40 chairs had been cleared from its corridors. The Ministry of Women and Child Development has launched an tender to auction off “obsolete/ unusable/unserviceable items”. Modi also wants bureaucrats to think creatively and take risks to

overcome administrative paralysis that set in over the past decade as the previous government became engulfed in a series of corruption scandals. He has abolished a slew of cabinet committees, concentrated power in the Prime Minister’s Office and is expected to overhaul a Soviet-style Planning Commission. Modi’s gruelling schedule has ministerial secretaries - the top-ranking civil servants - rushing to keep up. And for some, old habits die hard. “I too want to clean my room,” said one senior bureaucrat, surveying an office table covered with stacks of files. “But there is a fear I may lose a document which could prove fatal.”

ers regularly updated on developments in his office, the entire government is tweeting the newest developments. Even as the babus have just begun digesting the news of any new decision or development, the prime minister and his team of

ministers have already tweeted the news. For the journalists, the tweets are a manna of news, though it means following the PM and his team virtually 24x7. Under the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) dispensation, hardly any news filtered out of the

Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). But the new prime minister, whose crack tech team has developed an interactive and user-friendly PMO site, has ensured most of his meetings with dignitaries are “visible” to the world. And he does not waste

time tweeting too, whether about meeting Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the emotional talk he shared, the sari Sharif sent for his mother, or even greeting the start of the World Cup. The sudden announcement last week of the prime

minister agreeing to a US visit for a summit with President Barack Obama and his decision to make Bhutan his first stop for a foreign visit took even the external affairs ministry by surprise. Officials of the external affairs ministry, who are the ones that generally give out news of the prime minister’s upcoming visits, were taken unawares when some newspapers published the news about Modi’s decision to visit the US. The same thing happened with regard to the Bhutan visit. “The announcements are now

coming directly from the PMO,” admitted an official to IANS. The foreign ministry was shaken out of its somewhat slumberous existence last month, what with the elections and the excitement of the results still to settle, when the new dispensation announced that the leaders of South Asian nations (and Mauritius( would be invited for the swearing-in. “Yes, the announcement of the invitation to the South Asian leaders, and then the bilateral meetings, all came at very short notice. But we man-

aged to pull off everything smoothly,” an official said, admitting that “when the leader at the top strikes a fast pace, everybody else has to march in step.” The days following the May 26 swearing-in were a whir of fast-paced developments and look set to continue. Modi’s speeches are almost always extempore which while interesting to listen to - pose a challenge to the mediapersons. Jotting down notes and accurately getting the nuance of the speech, which is mostly in Hindi, right, is another challenge.

Centre toying with Beas tragedy: River water level to be lowered to locate bodies idea of dividing UP “We are concerned that things are going from bad to worse in the state”

New Delhi, JuNe 13 (tNN): The rape and murder of women in UP and the killing of three BJP leaders within a space of a week in the state, have countered any “feel good” factor chief minister Akhilesh Yadav may have wanted to generate through his investor summit in Delhi, even as the Union home ministry appears to be veering towards the idea that the state in its present size is “ungovernable” and should be divided. A senior home ministry official confirmed to ET that such a proposal was being looked at seriously even as home minister Rajnath Singh held a meeting on Thursday with state DGP AL Banerjee and Principal Secretary (Home) of Uttar Pradesh, Deepak Singhal, on the state’s law and order. Chief Minister Akhilesh later called on the Prime Minister. While all of this was happening in Delhi, Sangeet Som, BJP MLA and accused in the Muzaffarnagar riots case, rushed to Dadri near Greater Noida to raise the issue of murder of his party colleague Vijay Pandit. Som had spo-

ken out against the Akhilesh Yadav government in the Meerut abduction and rape case and had been at the forefront of a rather restive reaction from the Uttar Pradesh unit of BJP against the state government. He told ET, “Unless the Centre intervenes in the matter, the situation in Uttar Pradesh will go from bad to worse.” “I, for one, am not going to silently watch as our people are hunted down and young girls abducted and killed on a daily basis. I will agitate and raise this issue on the streets, I feel that the NDA government should seriously take note of the jungle raj in UP,” he said. “It is in the nature of the SP government that largescale law and order violations take place, as the chief minister has no control and each SP MLA and MLC or even party workers feels entitled to break the law,” he said. “If this government is allowed to continue for the rest of its tenure, which is another two-and-a-half years, the state will be finished,” he said. State unit chief Laxmikant Bajpai also met with governor BL Joshi and protested the killing of BJP leaders in the last week or so. “We are concerned that things are going from bad to worse in the state,” he said.

MANDi, JuNe 13 (iANS): Water level in Beas river will be lowered Saturday morning to find the remaining 16 missing students and one tour operator who were washed away in strong current near here last week, officials said Friday. Over 550 rescue operators will continue their massive search operation Saturday. No bodies was recovered Friday, the fifth day of the search operation. So far, rescue workers have re-

covered eight bodies, most of them either trapped under the rocks or sunk in the silt inthe river bed. “The water level in the three-km river stretch will be minimised for almost an hour by controlling inflow in it,” Deputy Commissioner Devesh Kumar told IANS. He said the outflow from the Larji and Parvati hydropower projects, located in the vicinity of the river, will be drastically reduced for at least one hour

from 7 a.m. “During this period, our emphasis would be to scan the entire riverbed in three kilometres,” he added. Jaideep Singh, commanding officer of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), said: “Maximum number of bodies have been recovered from this three-km stretch, near to the disaster spot. We are hopeful of locating more bodies in this stretch.”. “An echo sounder, an instrument that sends out

an acoustic pulse in water and measures distances in terms of the time for the echo of the pulse to return, would be deployed in a day or two to locate the missing students,” he added. An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has also been deployed by the NDRF to locate the bodies. A total of 20 divers of the NDRF and 18 of the army have been involved in the search operation. The Indian Navy and the ITBP are also part

Uphaar victims’ kin demand law to hasten justice

New Delhi, JuNe 13 (iANS): The kin of Uphaar cinema tragedy victims Friday appealed to the government to bring in a new legislation which would expeditiously deal with “man made” disasters pending for more than five years. “We appeal to the government of India to bring in a new legislation to deal with man-made disasters pending for five years,” Neelam Krishnamoor-

thy, president, Association of the Victims of Uphaar Tragedy (AVUT), said at the prayer meeting on the 17th death anniversary of Uphaar victims. On June 13, 1997, during the screening of Hindi film “Border”, a fire engulfed the theatre, killing 59 people and injuring over 100 in the subsequent stampede. The fire was sparked by a blast in a transformer in an underground park-

ing space in the five-storey building which housed the cinema hall and many offices. “The Supreme Court has convicted the owners of the theatre but the sentencing is still awaited. I do not know for how much longer we have to wait. Why is there no value for human life in India?” asked Krishnamoorthy. The AVUT in a statement said the families hope a larger bench would con-

sider the enormity of the tragedy, before deciding on the quantum of sentence. The families of the victims meet on this day every year around the premises of the cinema hall and perform a “havan” in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the tragedy. The families also held placards with slogans like “Do we still have to wait for justice for 17 years, while the convicted holiday abroad?”.

Cong MP criticises Prez for ignoring UPA feats

PANAJi, JuNe 13 (iANS): A Congress Rajya Sabha member from Goa Friday criticized President Pranab Mukherjee for ignoring the achievements of the Congress-led UPA governments in his address to parliament earlier this week. Goa’s lone representative in the up-

per house, Shantaram Naik told a press conference here that Mukherjee should have used his discretionary powers to include achievements of the Congress-led UPA governments in his address to the joint sitting of both houses of parliament. “The president should have used his

discretionary powers to include UPA’s achievements instead of just reading what was given to him by the government,” Naik said. Asked if he felt let down because of Mukherjee’s skipping United Progressive Alliance (UPA)’s achievements from his address, Naik said: “Something like that.” The

MP also said that by meeting secretaries to union ministers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was trying to undermine the authority of his ministerial colleagues. “The secretaries will now be more loyal to the PM. They will not listen to the ministers, who they report to,” Naik said.

Only 2 percent more donating blood will address the shortage June 14 is World Blood Donor Day

New Delhi, JuNe 13 (iANS): Despite being a country with a population of 1.2 billion, India faces a blood shortage of 3 million units. The problem can be addressed if an additional two percent of Indians donated blood, health experts say. According to a 2012 World Health Organisation (WHO) report, only nine million units are collected annually, while the need is for 12 million units.

Delhi NCR alone faces a shortage of 100,000 units per year. “The shelf-life of donated blood is 35 to 42 days. There is a constant need to replenish stocks in our blood banks. The problem could be addressed if only two percent more Indians donated blood,” Anju Verma, chief medical officer, Rotary Blood Bank, told IANS. Reports also suggest that only one percent of eligible donors do so everyday. “Healthy donors are between the age of 18 to 65 years. So they should come out and donate blood,” added Verma. Statistics show that there are 234 million major operations in India, 63 million trauma-induced surgeries, 31 million cancerrelated procedures and 10 million pregnancy related complications which require blood transfusions. Apart from these there are also disorders like

sickle cell anemia, thalassemia and haemophilia that require repeated blood transfusions. Importantly, the need is not only for blood but for “safe blood” and WHO has “Safe blood for saving mothers” as its theme for World Blood Donors Day on June 14. “Safe blood includes all that is available for transfusion. That which is unsafe should not be available for transfusion. The donated blood should ideally be checked for HIV, HBV (hepatitis B virus), HCV (hepatitis C virus) and other blood transmitted diseases prior to being made available for transfusion,” Nochiketa Mohanty, country programme manager, AIDS Healthcare Foundation, told IANS. Hence, safe blood can be collected with proper tests, quality management and an experienced and efficient medical team at a blood bank.

“Blood banks are empanelled by the government and all authorised centres should follow blood safety guidelines as listed by the National Aids Control Organisation (NACO). The list of empanelled blood banks should be made available to the public through the media on a periodic basis,” Monhanty added. nThe issue of blood shortage is also due to lack of voluntary donors, though the figure has been rising, particularly in states such as West Bengal, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh. “There are still states lagging because collections from individual Voluntary Blood Donation (VBD) is still very low and the majority of the blood donors are family VBD and replacement blood donors. Awareness of VBD needs to be increased and retained for a sustainable blood

supply in such states,” added Mohanty. Echoing this, Anita Suryanarayan, chief of lab services, Lister Metropolis Pvt. Ltd said: “As there is deficiency of blood during an emergency, the need arises to rely on professional donors who donate blood on a regular basis for money. “In this case, safety becomes an important question as they might not have a suitable health condition for to donate. This indicates that a rise is needed in the number of voluntary donors who refrain from donating blood because of their lack of awareness and ignorance,” Suryanarayan told IANS. Experts stress that only awareness and more sensitization and enhanced blood donation camps can match the shortage. Rotary’s Verma said: “Government should promote and assign ambassadors to promote the cause

and ensure easy accessibility to go and donate at various locations. “Acknowledge students who are regular donors and contribute to this noble cause. Promotion through hoardings and electronic and print media should be done at a regular intervals so that the practice of donating blood becomes a way of life,” said Verma. Experts said like in other cases, there are a number of myths associated with blood donation that needs to be busted. “The myths are like people with high cholesterol, diabetes or hypertension cannot donate blood, or that donating blood could lead to infections as attention is not paid on hygiene and safety in hospitals or that people on medication cannot donate blood. All these myths can only be removed through awareness,” Suryanarayan added.

of the search operation. The tragedy occurred when a group of students from an engineering college in Hyderabad, on a trip to Manali, was swept away Sunday evening when water was released into the river without a warning from a nearby hydropower project. mPolice have registered a case against the Larji hydropower project authorities for causing death by negligence and endangering life of people.

The case was registered on the basis of witnesses’ accounts that the hooter was not sounded by the project officials before releasing water into the river. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh has issued directions to all hydropower project authorities to follow necessary steps before releasing water which includes use of hooters and announcements on loudspeakers mounted on vehicles.

LTC scam: CBI books six present, former MPs New Delhi, JuNe 13 (iANS): The CBI Friday registered cases against three current and three former Rajya Sabha members in what has come to be termed as the leave and travel concession (LTC) scam, an official said. The three sitting MPs are Lalhming Liana of the Mizo National Front (MNF), D. Bandyopadhyay of the Trinamool Congress, and Brajesh Pathak of the Bahujan Samaj Party. The former MPs named in the case are Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) J.P.N. Singh, Rashtriya Lok Dal’s (RLD) Mahmood A. Madani, and Biju Janata Dal’s (BJD) Renubala Pradhan, the CBI official said. This is the first case registered

by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the scam. According to the agency, searches are being conducted at 10 locations, which include the houses, office premises of the MPs and also at the offices of travel agencies in Delhi and Odisha. Lakhs of rupees are said to have been fraudulently claimed from the government through fake leave and travel concession (LTC) claims, availed by government officials to get concessional tickets. The incident came to light after the vigilance department of Air India (AI) was alerted about the arrest of a man in March at the Kolkata airport with 600 blank boarding passes of the airline in his possession.

Trinamool says BJP using CBI for vendetta KolKAtA, JuNe 13 (iANS): The Trinamool Congress Friday accused the Narendra Modi government of using the CBI for “political vendetta” after the probe agency booked one of its parliamentarians in what has come to be termed the LTC scam. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Friday registered cases against three current and three former Rajya Sabha members, including Trinamool’s Debabrata Bandyopadhyay, in the leave and travel concession (LTC) scam and conducted searches at several locations, including their residences. “For years, the Congress government has used the CBI with a political motive. The BJP is following that sickening path,” Trinamool parliamentarian and spokesperson Derek O’Brien said. “We strongly condemn this attitude of using the CBI with the motive of political vendetta against the main opposition parties. In a democratic setup, this is just not done,” he added. O’Brien dubbed the move a deliberate attempt to malign and humiliate Bandyopadhyay. “We note with concern and disgust this form of petty politics to malign a gentleman with more than 40 years’ copybook public life. His integrity, credibility and honesty for the last four decades have been unquestionable. This is a deliberate attempt to humiliate him.” “We will fight this in the way we have fought our battles for the last 35 years - politically and democratically,” added O’Brien.

Iraq in paralysis after Sunni militants’ blitz

BAGHDAD, June 13 (AP): The Shiite-led government of Iraq’s Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki remained in paralysis Friday, unable to form a coherent response after al-Qaidainspired militants blitzed and captured entire chunks of the nation’s Sunni heartland this week, including major cities, towns, military and police bases as Iraqi forces melted away or fled. The new reality is the biggest threat to Iraq’s stability since the U.S. withdrawal at the end of 2011, and it has pushed the nation closer to a precipice that would partition it into Sunni, Shiite and Kurdish zones. Fighters from the militant group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant on Thursday vowed to march on Baghdad, joined by Saddam Hussein-era loyalists and other disaffected Sunnis. Trumpeting their victory, the militants also declared they would impose Shariah law in Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city they captured on Tuesday, and other areas they seized. In northern Iraq, Kurdish security forces moved to fill the power vacuum — taking over an air base and other posts abandoned by the military in the ethnically mixed city of Kirkuk. Three planeloads of

Americans were being evacuated from a major Iraqi air base in Sunni territory north of Baghdad, U.S. officials said, and Germany urged its citizens to immediately leave parts of Iraq, including Baghdad. President Barack Obama said Iraq will need more help from the United States, but he did not specify what it would be willing to provide. Senior U.S. officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter by name said Washington is considering whether to conduct drone missions in Iraq. The U.N. Security Council met on the crisis, underscoring the growing international alarm over the stunning advances by the Islamic State. Al-Maliki had asked parliament to declare a state of emergency that would give him and his Shiite-led government increased powers to run the country, but the lawmakers failed to assemble a quorum on Thursday. Skirmishes continued in several areas on Thursday. Two communities near Tikirt — the key oil refining center of Beiji and the city of Samarra, home to a prominent Shiite shrine — remained in government hands, according to Iraqi intelligence officials.

In Saddam’s hometown of Tikrit, overrun by the militants on Wednesday, witnesses said fighters raised posters of the late dictator and Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, his former deputy who escaped the 2003 U.S.-led invasion and eluded security forces ever since. Fighters loyal to his Naqshabandi Army as well

as former members of Saddam’s Baath Party were the main militant force in Tikrit on Thursday, said a resident who identified himself by his nickname, Abu Mohammed, out of concern for his safety. He said about 300 soldiers surrendered near the governor’s office. Lawmaker Hakim alZamili as well as two senior

intelligence officials, who were not authorized to talk to the media, confirmed the involvement of al-Douri’s group and other former Baathists and Saddamera military commanders. That could escalate the militants’ campaign to establish an al-Qaida-like enclave into a wider Sunni uprising and lead to break-

World’s largest water reservoir found deep in earth

WASHInGTon, June 13 (IAnS): In what could quench the thirst of billions of people in the future, researchers have discovered our planet’s largest water reservoir 640 km beneath our feet - bound up in rock deep in the earth’s mantle. Researchers from Northwestern University and University of New Mexico have found deep pockets of magma located beneath North America, a likely signature of the presence of water at these depths. This water is not in a form familiar to us - it

is not liquid, ice or vapour. This fourth form is water trapped inside the molecular structure of the minerals in the mantle rock. The discovery suggests water from the earth’s surface can be driven to such great depths by plate tectonics, eventually causing partial melting of the rocks found deep in the mantle. “We are finally seeing evidence for a whole-earth water cycle that may help explain the vast amount of liquid water on the surface of our habitable planet. Scientists have been looking

for this missing deep water for decades,” explained geophysicist Steve Jacobsen from Northwestern University. Scientists have long speculated that water is trapped in a rocky layer of the earth’s mantle located between the lower mantle and upper mantle. Jacobsen and seismologist Brandon Schmandt from University of New Mexico provided the first direct evidence that there may be water in this area of the mantle, known as the “transition zone,” on a regional scale. The find-

ings converged to produce evidence that melting may occur about 640 km deep in the earth. “H2O stored in mantle rocks, such as those containing the mineral ringwoodite, likely is the key to the process,” researchers said. Discovered this year from inside a diamond brought up from a depth of 640 km by a volcano in Brazil, a tiny piece of bluecoloured ringwoodite contained a surprising amount of water bound in solid form in the mineral. “Melting of rock at this

depth is remarkable because most melting in the mantle occurs much shallower, in the upper 80 km,” Schmandt said. If just one percent of the weight of mantle rock located in the transition zone is H2O, that would be equivalent to nearly three times the amount of water in our oceans. The findings, published in the journal Science, will aid scientists in understanding how the earth formed, what its current composition and inner workings are and how much water is trapped in mantle rock.

Pee-inspired technology to power US voices ‘serious your cars & homes! concerns’ over June 13 man urine waste as a single free electrons. Myanmar marriage bill LonDon, According to Korean (IAnS): Know that the precursor for carbon and WASHInGTon, June 13 (AP): The U.S. State Department has voiced serious concerns about proposals to criminalize interfaith marriage in Myanmar, while rights groups warned Thursday that passage of such discriminatory legislation could spark more violence against Muslims. Nationalist Buddhist monks are pushing legislation to “protect and preserve race and religion” in the Southeast Asian nation, which has seen bouts of violence against minority Muslims in the past two years that have killed more than 200 people and displaced tens of thousands. President Thein Sein has directed parliament to draft four items of legislation that would also restrict religious conversion, ban polygamy and enact population control measures — widely viewed as steps directed against Muslims. That’s raised questions about the direction of Myanmar’s democratic reforms as it shifts from decades of military rule.m The Obama administration has been a staunch supporter of Thein Sein, helping his government to escape pariah status. But nationalist sentiments appear to rising in the country also known as Burma ahead of pivotal national elections in 2015. “The United States opposes any measure that would criminalize interfaith marriages. Such a step would be inconsistent with the government’s efforts to promote tolerance and respect for human rights,” department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in written response to a question posed at a press briefing Wednesday. mEarlier this week, U.S. Ambassador to Myanmar, Derek Mitchell, said he spoke to women activists who reported receiving death threats for opposing the marriage bill. In a statement Thursday, a coalition of 80 civil society groups said the draft religious conversion law, published in May 27 and currently open for public comment, would unlawfully restrict the right to freely choose a religion. The bill “appears to legitimize the views of those promoting hate-speech and inciting violence against Muslims and other minorities, and if adopted, will further institutionalize discrimination against religious and ethnic minorities,” the coalition, including the British-based group Christian Solidarity Worldwide, said. Robert George, chairman of the U.S. government’s Commission on International Religious Freedom, said the conversion legislation would contravene Myanmar’s international commitments to protect freedom of religion or belief. “Such a law has no place in the 21st century, and we urge that it be withdrawn,” he said in a statement. Rep. Joseph Crowley, a leading voice in U.S. Congress on Myanmar policy, said it was most disappointing that Thein Sein’s office was pushing the efforts to “institutionalize discrimination.” “On top of the fact that he still hasn’t released all political prisoners, attacks are continuing against ethnic groups, and he has not supported constitutional reform. I’m seriously concerned about the overall situation,” the Democratic lawmaker said.

world’s population produces around 10.5 billion litres of urine each day? How about using this vast reservoir to generate power for cars, homes or even cities? According to Korean researchers, carbon atoms recovered from human urine have the right kind of properties to replace expensive catalysts in fuel cell applications to achieve this. “We could use urine to create highly porous carbon containing heteroatoms such as N, S, Si, and P (nitrogen, sulphur, silicon and phosphorus) from hu-

multiple heteroatoms,” explained lead study author Jong-Sung Yu from Korea University. Fuel-cell technology converts chemical energy into electricity by reacting hydrogen and oxygen. These fuel cells work by delivering hydrogen gas to a negatively charged anode on one side of the fuel cell while oxygen is channelled to a positively charged cathode on the other side. At the anode, a catalyst usually platinum - knocks the hydrogen atoms’ electrons off, leaving positively charged hydrogen ions and

scientists, this would be done by replacing expensive platinum used in current fuel cells with carbon naturally found in human waste. “There are other environmental benefits too that come with treating urine as a commodity rather than a waste product,” Jong-Sung Yu added. Fewer pollutants, such as leftover drugs, from urine would reach water bodies and the carbon recovered from urine could also be used in battery applications, he said in a paper published in the journal Nature.

ing up the country along ethnic and sectarian lines. With its large Shiite population, Baghdad would be a far harder target for the militants. So far, they have stuck to the Sunni heartland and former Sunni insurgent strongholds where people are already alienated by alMaliki’s government over allegations of discrimina-

tion and mistreatment. The militants also would likely meet far stronger resistance, not only from government forces but by Shiite militias. Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and the Asaib Ahl al-Haq Shiite militia vowed to defend Shiite holy sites, raising the specter of street clashes and sectarian killings. Baghdad authorities tightened security and residents stocked up on essentials. Hundreds of young men crowded in front of the main army recruiting center in Baghdad on Thursday after authorities urged Iraqis to help battle the insurgents. Security officials said the Islamic State fighters managed to take control of two weapons depots holding 400,000 items, including AK-47 rifles, rockets and rocket-propelled grenades, artillery shells and mortars. A quarter of the stockpiles were sent to Syria, they said. The advances by the Sunni militants are a heavy defeat for al-Maliki. His Shiite-dominated political bloc came first in April parliamentary elections — the first since the U.S. military withdrawal in 2011 — but failed to gain a majority, forcing him to try to build a governing coalition. “We do have a stake in making sure that these ji-

hadists are not getting a permanent foothold in either Iraq or Syria, for that matter,” Obama said in Washington. Al-Maliki and other Iraqi leaders have pleaded with the Obama administration for more than a year for additional help to combat the growing insurgency. Separately, diplomatic efforts were underway to free 80 Turkish citizens held by militants in Mosul, an official in the Turkish prime minister’s office said. The captives include 49 people seized in the Turkish consulate Wednesday, said an official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. Kurdish fighters from the ethnic group’s autonomous enclave in the north showed signs of taking a greater role in fighting back against the Islamic State. Their role is a potential point of friction because both Sunni and Shiite Arabs are wary of Kurdish claims on territory. Kurdish security forces known as peshmerga took over an air base and other posts abandoned by Iraqi forces in Kirkuk, Brig. Halogard Hikmat, a senior peshmerga official told The Associated Press. He denied reports the whole city was under peshmerga control.

Endangered delicacy: Japan eel on ‘red list’ ToKYo, June 13 (AP): The Japanese eel, a popular summertime delicacy that has become prohibitively expensive due to overfishing, has been put on the international conservation “red list” in a move that may speed up Japan’s push for industrial farming of the species. Japan’s agriculture minister urged that efforts to boost the eel population be stepped up after the International Union for Conservation of Nature this week designated the Japanese eel as “endangered,” or facing a very high risk of extinction. Other species of eel are also facing various levels of threat due to habitat damage and overfishing. The decision by the IUCN to put the Japanese eel on its red list could lead to global restrictions. Inclusion on the list can be the basis for trade restrictions under an international treaty on trade in endangered animals and plants. “We must speed up efforts to build large-scale production systems,” Yoshimasa Hayashi, the minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, told reporters after the IUCN’s decision was announced. Efforts to farm eels have made slow progress due to their complicated migratory patterns. Unlike salmon,

which migrate inland to spawn but spend their lives at sea, eels are spawned in remote areas of the ocean and then migrate inland, only returning to the sea to reproduce. Japan consumes more than two-thirds of all eel eaten, thanks partly to a tradition of eating roasted eel as tonic for the heat during the hottest days of summer. The delicacy is as much a custom of the season as watching fireworks, listening to wind chimes and eat-

common household dish. A bowl of rice with a slice of roasted eel on top sells for $7-$10 at Tokyo’s Tsukiji market. Small packages of roasted eel sold in supermarkets sell for $15 or more. The threat to eels has received much less attention than the crisis with some other species, such as Bluefin tuna. Such issues will be among those discussed next week at a U.S.-led “Our Ocean” conference in Washington, D.C., said David Balton, a deputy assistant U.S. secretary of state. “A third of all major fish stocks are overfished and another 50 percent are fished at their limit and are in danger of being overfished,” Balton said on a conference call. “The situation for fisheries around the world is not a good one. We need to act to end overfishing.” Elvers are caught in rivers in Asia and other regions and provided as seed stock for aquaculture. They are a lucrative fishery for New England, in the U.S., where quotas have been set to prevent overfishing. Japan put the Japanese eel on its own red list of species in danger of extinction last year after the catch of adult eels dropped to 4 percent of the peak of 232 tons in the early 1960s.

“The situation for fisheries around the world is not a good one. We need to act to end overfishing” ing watermelon. Japanese eel are usually raised to adulthood after being caught as elvers, or glass eels. The elver industry has expanded rapidly to meet demand, putting heavy pressure on the species, as well as many other fish stocks and pushing prices for elvers as high as $36,000 a kilogram. In turn, prices for mature eels have soared, turning the traditional “kabayaki” roasted eel dish, with a tangy sauce on top, into a luxury rather than a

Aung San Suu Kyi’s hopes of becoming president dims Chances of becoming Myanmar president receives setback as committee voted not to change a Constitutional clause YAnGon, June 13 (ReuTeRS): Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi’s hopes of becoming Myanmar’s president next year have been dealt a blow when a parliamentary committee voted not to change a constitutional clause that bars her from the post, two of the panel members said on Friday. The committee tasked with recommending amendments opted to retain the section that prevents anyone married to a foreigner or with children of foreign citizenship from becoming head of state. The two sources declined to be identified and did not say why the proposal was rejected by 26 of the 31 panelists. Most experts believe the clause, 59 (f), was written into the military-drafted 2008 constitution specifically to sideline Suu Kyi, who became a global icon for her fight against military

rule, most of it from house arrest. Her late husband was British, as are her two sons. “Only five of the 31 committee members voted in favour of amending the section at the closed door meeting of the committee,” said a member who requested anonymity because the committee’s affairs are meant to be secret. Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy (NLD) party have been pushing for constitutional change ahead of next year’s election, mainly to reduce the political clout of the military, which ruled Myanmar for 49 years until a nominally civilian government led by retired generals took office in 2011. The committee picked to assess amendments has only two NLD members on it and is comprised mainly of lawmakers from the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), which was cre-

ated from a social movement of a similar name set up by the former junta. The USDP has 14 people on the panel and seven members are serving military officers appointed as lawmakers as part of a 25 percent legislative quota allocated to the armed forces, a clause the NLD, which suffered persecution by the former regime, wants to change. Myanmar lawmakers are assessing changes to the constitution ahead of next year’s parliamentary election. A vote in the bicameral legislature to change the constitution to allow Suu Kyi to become president is still possible, although political analysts say it is extremely unlikely it would be passed because the military and its USDP allies dominate parliament. Her party, however, said it was not over yet. “We can’t say Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has no chance

of becoming the president until the union parliament approves it,” said spokesman and senior party official Nyan Win. Daw is an honorific in Myanmar. “We need to wait till the committee submits its final suggestions at the parliament.” Myanmar’s constitution was crafted by the for-

mer junta as the basis for the country’s gradual transition to democracy. The semi-civilian government has surprised the world with reforms that were unthinkable under direct army control and managed to convince Suu Kyi and the NLD to join parliament. The United States sus-

pended most sanctions in recognition of Myanmar’s sweeping changes, but still regards the constitution as undemocratic. In January, congress passed a spending bill that requires further reform, including a revised constitution, as a prerequisite for the complete removal of sanctions.

Scolari defends penalty, praises Neymar after win SAO PAULO, JUne 13 (ReUteRS): Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari rejected claims they were favoured by the referee and heaped praise on Neymar after the forward scored twice in a 3-1 win over Croatia in the World Cup opening game on Thursday. Scolari said his team showed great character after bouncing back from an early own goal and singled out 22-year-old Neymar for his man of the match performance. "The only thing we want is that Neymar is happy playing ball.

He's a special player," Scolari told reporters after the win gave Brazil a great start in their bid for a recordextending sixth World Cup title. Brazil fell behind after 11 minutes through Marcelo's own goal but Neymar led the comeback, scoring with a left-footed shot from outside the area and then with a controversial penalty awarded by Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura. Croatia's coach Niko Kovac was furious about the award of the soft 71st-minute spot kick and said the World Cup could become a "cir-

cus" if Brazil continued to get favourable calls. Scolari, who said he agreed with the call, responded by reminding Kovac that Brazil has won the World Cup more times than any country and did it without any help from referees. No Comment "I'm not going to comment on what my colleague (Kovac) said. The only comment I can make is that Brazil has five World Cup titles," he said. "Those weren't five circuses in favor of Brazil." "The referee saw

Brazil bring World Cup to life with thrilling win SAO PAULO, JUne 13 (ReUteRS): Seven years a hostage to threats of violent demonstrations and crippling labour strikes, the World Cup broke free on Thursday when Brazil brought the tournament to life with Neymar scoring twice in a thrilling 3-1 win over Croatia. It was far from vintage Brazil at times, impatient in possession and unsure in defence, but once they hit full stride they were impossible to resist - the inimitable Neymar and ebullient Oscar taking the game by the scruff of the neck. After falling behind to an 11th minute own goal from unfortunate defender Marcelo, forward Neymar equalised with a terrific strike from outside the box before converting the softest of penalties late in the second half. Midfielder Oscar capped an outstanding performance with a goal of true quality in stoppage time that

sealed the three points for Brazil and brought an enormous roar of relief from the 62,103 crowd at Sao Paulo's Corinthians arena. For 22-year-old Neymar, scoring twice on a night when the World Cup returned to the spiritual home of football was beyond his wildest dreams. "I’m very happy, really happy indeed, more than I ever dreamed or imagined," the man of the match told reporters. "We started off on the right foot, with a victory. "The merit belongs to the team as a whole, which remained cool and calm to come from behind and win." And how the home fans revelled in the win. A delirious, dancing sea of yellow hailing the victory as the first step towards a recordextending sixth World Cup title.

In the wake of the embarrassing, hostile reception from fans at last year's Confederations Cup, Brazil President Dilma Rousseff and FIFA chief Sepp Blatter chose not to address the opening ceremony. Chelsea hope Fabregas will boost firepower

LOnDOn, JUne 13 (ReUteRS): Chelsea will be hoping Cesc Fabregas can boost their firepower after the Barcelona midfielder agreed to sign a five-year deal with the Stamford Bridge club on Thursday. Fabregas, 27, in Brazil with Spain's World Cup squad, will return to London after leaving Arsenal to rejoin his boyhood club in 2011. Spanish media reported Chelsea had paid 33 million euros ($44.6 million) for the 2010 World Cup winner, with a possible three million more linked to performance. Switching allegiance from north to south west London, he joins Jose Mourinho's Chelsea side that finished third in the Premier League and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League last season despite having trouble scoring goals. Fabregas is likely to team up with prolific Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa, a much publicised transfer target for Mourinho, at Stamford Bridge next season. "I do feel I have unfinished business in the Premier League and now is the right time for my return," Fabregas told Barcelona's website (fcbarcelona.com). "Everyone knows Arsenal had the first option to sign me. They decided not to take this option and therefore it wasn't meant to be. "I considered all the other offers very carefully and I firmly believe Chelsea is the best choice. They match my footballing ambitions with their hunger and desire to win trophies." Fabregas, who played for Barcelona as a child

before joining Arsenal at the age of 16, made 151 appearances under three coaches, scoring 42 times for the Catalans but, unlike his time in north London, never proved a favourite among the fans. Scoring Flair The Spaniard's goalscoring flair will come in handy at Chelsea where compatriot Fernando Torres and his fellow strikers Samuel Eto'o and Demba Ba managed fewer than 20 league goals between them last season.

Chelsea are also losing the club's all-time top scorer Frank Lampard who often scored 20 goals a season in all competitions during his 13 years at the club. Fabregas is moving into a crowded area of the team because Chelsea have a wealth of young, attacking midfield talent in Belgium's Eden Hazard, Brazilian duo Oscar and Willian, Germany's Andre Schuerrle and Egyptian Mohamed Salah. The Spaniard became the youngest player to turn out for Arsenal when he made his debut in 2003 at

the age of 16. Fabregas won the FA Cup with the club but other trophies eluded the Gunners and the Catalan is clearly chasing sliverware. During his three years at Barcelona he won the league and the Spanish Cup but their superiority could be on the wane after they were eclipsed by Champions League winners Real Madrid last season and the rising force of La Liga winners Atletico Madrid. While Fabregas has an impressive string of international honours to his name with World Cup and European Championship medals, he has, as yet, missed out on Premier League and Champions League glory. He clearly hopes to remedy that under Mourinho who has won both trophies twice. Fabregas joins an expanding band of Spaniards at Chelsea where Torres has said he plans to stay, Cesar Azpilicueta is settled in defence and Brazil-born Diego Costa looks likely to be leading the line when the new season opens in August. The midfielder has been given the number four shirt vacated by Paris St Germain-bound David Luiz. Xavi, Fabregas's 2014 World Cup colleague and former Barca team mate, said the transfer was "great news for Cesc". "I see him looking very happy," Xavi told reporters in Salvador. "It's a great opportunity for him to be signed by a good team. "He was hopeful it would happen. He now knows what his future holds for the next few years but of course it is a very important loss for Barcelona."

a penalty. It's the referee that has to decide." Scolari, Neymar and the rest of the Brazil team are under intense pressure as local fans expect their team to deliver the country's first World Cup title on home soil. Neymar delivered in style on Thursday, leading the comeback alongside excellent midfielder Oscar. "He (Neymar) doesn't need all of you (the media) to demand that he become the best player in the world. His responsibility is to play for Brazil, and that's what he did today," Scolari said.

lowed, home soil would no doubt go some way to soothing some of Brazil's wounds and the Selecao are now six more wins away from achieving that. Croatia clearly had not read the script and, after forward Ivica Olic headed narrowly wide, they took the lead in the 11th minute through Brazil's first ever World Cup own goal. Olic's low cross from the left went through the legs of Brazil skipper Thiago Silva, clipped Nikica Jelavic's foot and bounced in off Marcelo with keeper Julio Cesar left helpless. A moment's stunned silence was quickly replaced by chants of "Brazil! Brazil!" as the crowd pleaded with the home side to strike back quickly. 'Outright thuggery' Inevitably it would be Neymar who answered their prayers. He marked his 50th appearance for Brazil with a superb equaliser in the 29th minute, dragging a low shot into the

corner of the net past the despairing dive of Stipe Pletikosa. Neymar's 33rd international goal arrived in more controversial circumstances after Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura awarded the home side a 71st-minute penalty. Brazil striker Fred fell to the ground under the slightest contact from Dejan Lovren and, after Nishimura pointed to the spot, the referee was surrounded by furious Croatian players questioning the call. Once the dust had settled, Neymar kept his cool to stroke the penalty home. Croatia coach Niko Kovac warned that the World Cup could become a "circus" after Nishimura's decision. "This was ridiculous today, and if we continue in this way we will have a circus," he told reporters at a postmatch news conference dominated by questions about the spot kick. "If that's a penalty, we don't need to play football any more. The lads played their hearts

out but that was outright thuggery by a referee who was just out of his depth for a game of this magnitude." Kovac's Brazil counterpart, Luiz Felipe Scolari, did not agree with his counterpart's thoughts on the contentious award. “I'm not going to comment on what my colleague said. The only comment I can make is that Brazil has 5 World Cup titles. Those weren’t five circuses in favour of Brazil. "I perfectly understand my colleague’s remarks, and I respect them ... But I don’t see any favouring of Brazil in those five World Cup titles.” While debate about the penalty will continue long after Thursday's game, there was no doubting the class of Oscar's strike that wrapped up Brazil's win. Bursting clear of the tiring Croatia defence in stoppage time, he toe-poked the ball home to seal Brazil's 10th successive victory and give them the perfect start to their World Cup campaign.

NBA: Spurs take 3-1 lead with victory over Heat

MIAMI, JUne 13 (AP): Here they are again, back on the brink of a championship. It slipped away from the San Antonio Spurs last year, but it would take something special — historic, actually — to stop them now. The Miami Heat would have to make the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history. "They're the twotime champs, they're a great team, and there is still one more game," Spurs guard Tony Parker said. "We have to win one more game." Kawhi Leonard had 20 points and 14 rebounds, and the Spurs routed the Heat again, winning 107-86 on Thursday night to open a commanding 3-1 lead. The Spurs can win their fifth NBA championship with a victory at home in Game 5 on Sunday and avenge their seven-game loss to Miami last year. They have three chances, and the way they're dominating the Heat, they might need just one. "I'm pleased that they performed as well as they did while we've been in Miami, and that's about as far as it goes," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Now we've got to go back home and play as well or better." LeBron James had 28 points and eight rebounds, but Dwyane Wade was just 1 of 10 through three quarters and finished with 10 points. "They smashed us," James said. "Two straight home games got off to awful starts. They came in and were much better than us

in these last two games. It's just that simple." No team has overcome a 3-1 deficit in the finals, and the way the Heat were outclassed twice on their home floor makes it hard to imagine the two-time champions being the first. "We put ourselves in a position where it is about making history," James added. Parker added 19 points, and Tim Duncan had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Spurs, who shot 57

percent from the field and are hitting 54 percent in the series. The Spurs lost twice in Miami to end last year's finals, their only defeat in the championship round. They won their two games in South Florida this time by a combined 40 points. San Antonio's surprising dominance has Miami on its heels, and unless Miami can figure things out quickly, the Heat's twoyear championship reign

will come to an abrupt end. If this was the last home game of the season in Miami, it looked and sounded nothing like the ones to end the last two years, which featured confetti falling and trophies raised. This one had the unfamiliar sound of boos late in the first half and a chant of "Go Spurs Go!" with under 3 minutes left from the San Antonio fans who remained long after many of Miami's had bolted.

World Cup Spirits Dampened By Technical Issues with Jennifer Lopez’ Opening Performance

The

World Cup wasn’t off to a great start last night. The World Cup opening concert last night wasn’t quite the life-affirming optimism fest it was intended to be. The reason Sound issues meant that the audience at home could barely hear Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull as they took the stage to perform on opening night. Fans in the stadium were fine, The Telegraph reports, but those watching the festivities elsewhere were likely not impressed.

Jennifer Lopez took to the stage to sing the official Fifa song We Are One (Ole Ola), looking on fine form for 44. Admittedly, the singer knows how to draw and keep a crowd and she projected as best she could. However, the “appalling sound quality” made J-Lo and Pitbull’s voices sound “tinny” and quiet. Not exactly what you’d want for the opening on the world’s biggest football tournament. As it turns out, the problem originated at the source and

was not the fault of any local network. A source at ITV, which broadcast the ceremony in Britain, said last night that it had “no control” over audio levels because a single feed was distributed around the world. The complaints from hundreds of fans form just another setback for a World Cup already dealing with more than a few problems. There have already been questions about the quality of Brazil’s football pitches and protests in Sao Paulo are ongoing.

Singer Taylor Swift wants to be movie star? S

inger Taylor Swift is reportedly determined to become a movie star. The country singer, who rules the music world, is now eager to be taken seriously in another area of show business, reportedly. Taylor badly wants to be a movie star. She`s determined to prove herself as an actress and not simply a singer who dabbles in movies, a source said. Swift, 24, has made a cameo in the 2010 movie `Valentine`s Day`. Swift will also act in the science fiction film `The Giver`, opposite Academy Award winner Meryl Streep. The movie will hit theatres this August. Taylor is now under pressure to make her first major movie deal. She has been offered the moon, technically, about USD 10 million, to make a concert film in the vein of Justin Bieber and Katy Perry`s efforts, but Taylor`s policy of aiming high has put the kibosh on those plans, the source added.

star Justin Bieber has become a personal hero for a child named Theo and his family after the kid started recovering from his illness because of the singer. Kera Bolonik, the writer of a magazine who happens to be the father of the 14-month-old child, shared the true story of how his son Theo`s life was saved by the Canadian singer through his song, reportedly. Theo had an undiagnosed and debilitating disease that caused frequent seizure which made him sluggish. Because of that, Theo had difficulty in eating and he was like a drained battery when he woke up. Theo`s nanny Erin made

Theo eat his meal by playing music video of Bieber`s hit `Baby which the boy chanted Bee-bee, bay-bee every five minutes. Theo would ask to repeat the music video until he finished his meal. The song came to be Theo`s life raft, as well as our measuring stick for how long it would take to feed him, Kera said. I`d sworn that Bieber would never be allowed in our household, but desperate times call for desperate measures, and the track was playing so frequently it became like white noise Theo would demand the video repeatedly until his meal-or any task we needed him to endure-was done. It was an easy request to oblige, he added.

split from his second wife Dina last year, after 17-years-of-marriage but it looks as though 84-year-old Clint Eastwood is taking bachelorhood in his stride. On a break from directing his new movie American Sniper, the veteran actor was pictured with Christina Sandera, a pretty hostess from his Mission Ranch Hotel in Carmel, California, earlier this month as the pair went shopping at Wholefoods in LA. And it has now been revealed that the duo have in face been living together for months, with Us Weekly reporting: ‘She lives with him in his house he used to share with Dina. She moved in months ago.’ And the pretty blonde has even gotten the seal of approval from his children. The source said: ‘Clint’s kids have all met Christina and like [her]. The kids all say she is ‘normal.’ Clint looked calm and relaxed as he accompanied his girlfriend, while she pushed their shopping in a cart. The pair were seen loading up a vehicle before jetting off together with the goods. Christina bares a striking resemblance to Erica Tomlinson-Fisher - who Clint started dating following his split from his wife. Erica used to be married to Scott Fisher, a childhood sweetheart of Clint’s ex-wife Dina. A source explained the spouse swap, saying: ‘After Scott and Erica divorced, Erica was sure Scott was romancing Dina. Erica called Clint’s office last February to discuss her suspicions - then he fell for her!’ However, that relationship appears to have fizzled out with the insider explaining: ‘Erica Tomlinson-Fischer now seems to be gone.

She hasn’t been around in awhile. He is with Christina and happy. In December last year, Clint - who is worth a reported $350 million - filed a response in his ongoing bitter divorce from the TV news anchor Dina Eastwood, indicating he’s not willing to provide her with maintenance, which will allow her to continue to live the lifestyle she’s used to, and he wants her to cough up for her own legal fees too. Dina filed for divorce from the Oscar-winning star after 17 years of marriage in October last year, citing irreconcilable differences, but Clint claims the pair secretly separated more than 18 months ago. The 48-year-old reality TV star is also asking for full legal custody of their 16-year-old daughter Morgan, which could cause an even bigger feud between the pair. Clint claims he took out a pre-nuptial agreement prior to their wedding in 1996. Clint Eastwood’s ex Dina talks about the ‘bizarre’ break-up Meanwhile, Dina recently admitted she didn’t blame the Gran Torino star for their split and, instead, believes it was people around him who caused their separation. She said in December last year: ‘He’s lovely, he (Clint) hasn’t done much. It’s other people around him have done things that have blown me away and again my future ex-husband has done nothing [wrong].’ ‘He’s probably the sweetest guy I’ve ever met. He is the sweetest, he is a loving, kind, low-key person so my intuition was still great on marrying a good person.’ Clint has seven other children from previous relationships.

Glimpses of Brazil 2014

Clash of Styles as Japan Meet Ivory Coast

RIO, JUNE 13 (AGENCIES): While Japan have a technical command over their nimble midfield, Ivory Coast have raw power and can pose a serious threat in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup. Japan's technicians must try to outfox a powerful Ivory Coast as the Asian and African powerhouses meet in a clash of styles here Saturday. The Blue Samurai have established themselves as the leading force on the Asian continent largely thanks to the technical quality of their nimble midfield, while the Ivorians' rely on the power and driving runs of African Player of the Year Yaya Toure and exciting young full-back Serge Aurier. Whether it is Japan's guile or the Elephants' physical force, whoever comes out on top in the Pernambuco Arena on Brazil's north-east coast will put themselves in a fine position from which to go on and qualify for the last 16. A group that also contains Greece and a Colombia side deprived of the injured Radamel Falcao could be Amaceo Jgussi wears a helmet topped with a replica of Bra- one of the most open of this zil's Christ the Redeemer as he waits to enter Itaquerao StaWorld Cup, but Ivory Coast dium for the World Cup opening match. (AP Photo) coach Sabri Lamouchi is hopeful his side can progress. "Our ambition is to go

beyond the first phase as it is something the Ivory Coast have never managed before," said the Frenchman, who is the youngest coach at the finals at the age of 42. The Elephants' Golden Generation, led by veteran striker Didier Drogba, have

bowed out at the group stage in each of the last two World Cups and Lamouchi knows the importance of getting a positive result against Japan. "In the last two years I have brought my ideas, my methods. I can assure you we have worked

very well," he added. "We have brought in younger players because we also need to prepare the future. It is true that we have great players, international class players like Drogba, Yaya Toure and Gervinho, but this generation has still not

won anything and we need to find out why that is." In 2006 and 2010, they could point to being handed extremely difficult draws, first being grouped with Argentina and the Netherlands and then with both Brazil and Portugal.

This time the draw gives them reason to be more optimistic, and they may be better prepared to deal with the tropical climate in Recife than the Japanese. The Asian champions will look to the creative spark of Manchester United's Shinji Kagawa and Keisuke Honda of AC Milan, but Italian coach Alberto Zaccheroni will know his defence could struggle against the quality of Drogba and Swansea City's Wilfried Bony. But he is hopeful that his team will be mentally ready for their first truly competitive game since securing World Cup qualification a year ago. "I want us to be really well prepared mentally for this match. We need to make sure the players are not too nervous when they step out onto the field, but we cannot be too relaxed either," said the 61-year-old former AC Milan coach. "We have a squad with an average age of about 27. There is a good balance and I am sure we will start this game with the right approach." Japan are expecting midfielder and captain Makoto Hasebe to feature after he said he was "ready to go" following a knee injury, while the Ivorians will hope Yaya Toure shakes off a hamstring problem in time to feature.

Falcao's absence spoils Colombia WC return Sagna leaves Arsenal,

BELO HORIZONTE, JUNE 13 (AP): Colombia's 16-year wait for a return to the World Cup was miserable enough for its supporters. Now they're coming to terms with a few setbacks before Colombia's Group C opener Saturday against Greece, including the loss of Radamel Falcao. The star forward was cut from the squad last week after failing to recover in time from a serious knee injury. While Colombia has other attacking options, Falcao's exclusion is a psychological blow. Coach Jose Pekerman described it as his "saddest day" since taking charge of "Los Cafeteros" when he A Brazilian fan cheers before the group A World Cup soccer dropped Falcao along with match between Brazil and Croatia. Then, midfielder Aldo Ramirez was sent home with a foot injury sustained in a training session last week, days after Pekerman announced his final squad. Falcao, nicknamed "El Tigre," will be sorely missed. The 28-year-old striker, who joined Monaco from Atletico Madrid, tore left knee ligaments in a French Cup game in January. He was key to Colombia's successful qualifying campaign, scoring nine goals — a record for the country. optimistic about its chances in a group that also includes Ivory Coast and Japan. Colombia's main playmaker, James Rodriguez, points out that even without Falcao the team has a strong strike force which includes Carlos Bacca, Teofilo "Teo" Gutierrez and Jackson Martinez. "The responsibility is weighing on us even more without Falcao, but we're not alone," the 22-year-old Rodriguez said. "The attack isn't going to change. It's the same. Apart from Falcao, we have Teo, Jackson and Bacca." The Greece team considers its opener with Colombia at Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte as the toughest match in the group, and is showing little sign of relief over Falcao's absence. "Our aim is to get out the group," defender

Sokratis Papastathopoulos said. "That would be a very big achievement for us ... the first match is the one that gives you strength or disappointment." Greece broke a three-game scoring drought with a 2-1 win over Bolivia in friendly played in New York last week. Goal scorer Costas Katsouranis said the result showed his team was improving despite some trouble with finishing chances. "I think we will be better against Colombia," he said. "For sure, there will be difficult conditions. It's hot and it's humid, so it's hard to know how that will affect us." It's also unclear how Greece's late arrival in Brazil might affect the team's preparations for the first match. Greece arrived a day late after a flight cancellation in the United States, and FIFA had to step

in to help the team reach its base in Aracaju. "We had some problems during our arrival here, but now everything is perfect," Greece midfielder Yiannis Maniatis said. Coach Fernando Santos acknowledges that Greece isn't a high-scoring team, but is confident the goals will come when needed. "What I'm happy about is that we're creating more chances," Santos said. "We're in a group where any of the teams could qualify, but I do believe we will make it through." Santos believes striker Kostas Mitroglou will be ready despite his lack of game time since moving to England at the start of the year to join Fulham, which has been relegated from the Premier League. Santos also selected veteran players, including 2004 European Championship winners Katsouranis and captain Giorgos Karagounis. Colombia, playing in its first World Cup since 1998, is keen to make up for lost time. But the South Americans are aware that Greece has the propensity to surprise in international tournaments, like it did at Euro 2004. "Greece is a difficult rival," right back Santiago Arias said. "We have to concentrate on our lines ... We have everything we need to have a good World Cup."

set for City move

Bacary Sagna (AP File Photo)

LONDON, JUNE 13 (AP): France and Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna will join English Premier League champion Manchester City from next season. Sagna's contract at Arsenal expires at the end of June, and his move from the Emirates Stadium was widely expected after he reportedly rejected a twoyear contract extension. Sagna also posted a farewell message to Arsenal on social media before the transfer's announcement. Sagna will join City for the club's preseason tour in the United States after the World Cup in Brazil, where he is with the France squad.

The 31-year-old rightback joined Arsenal seven years ago from French side Auxerre and played in 284 matches for the Gunners. But he did not win a single trophy in North London before lifting the FA Cup in his final appearance for the club last month in Wembley. Sagna is expected to sign a deal estimated by British media at 140,000 pounds ($237,000) a week with City. In a statement released on the Gunners' website, the club thanked Sagna "for his fantastic contribution." City confirmed Sagna's arrival and said he will keep the No. 3 jersey he wore at Arsenal.

Suarez doubt dominates Uruguay preparation

FORTALEZA, JUN E13 (AFP): Uruguay will give star striker Luis Suarez every chance to prove his fitness less than a month after having knee surgery ahead of their World Cup opener with Costa Rica in Fortaleza on Saturday. The Premier League Player of the Year had an operation to repair damage to the meniscus in his left knee on May 22, but has remained steadfast in his determination to feature in Brazil. "I want to tell everyone that the recovery is going very well and that the knee feels good. Everything depends on how things go day-by-day, but it is going well," Suarez said via his official Twitter account. "I want to thank you all

for the messages of support I have received throughout the week and my mind is now focused on the World Cup." However, with tougher tests on paper in England and Italy to come for the 2010 semifinalists later in Group D, coach Oscar Tabarez may be tempted to give his star man a few extra days to recover. "If it was down to me then Suarez would play," said Tabarez. "His path from the under 20 side to now has been incredible, but first we just think about him as a person rather than a footballer and protect him. Then we can go stepby-step and we are getting closer to the dream that he will be with us."
