Work charged employees to hold NSSATA affirm to Sit-in demonstration on March 24 continue agitation

DIMAPUR, MARCH 14 (MExN): The All Nagaland Inter Departmental Field Staff Association Joint Forum (ANIDFSAJF) has expressed concern over the “non response” of the government to its demands, regarding revision of pay and regularization of services of work charged employees, as per a Guwahati High Court order. The Forum had set a 7 day deadline, starting March 6, for the government to address the issue. This was intimated to the Chief Minister through an official representation on March 6. The Forum, in a meeting on Friday, unanimously resolved to hold sit-in demonstrations in all the district headquarters and the state capital on March 21, from 10:00 am onwards. A press note from the ANIDFSAJF called upon all work charged employees and their dependants to participate in the demonstrations. In Kohima, the demonstration will be held in front of the entrance gate of the Civil Secretariat Building. However, in all other districts, the venue of the demonstrations

shall be decided by the divisional units of the various departments, it was informed. It further directed that two delegates from every department from each district shall be sent to Kohima to join the demonstrations in the state capital. It was further informed that banners would be displayed in the demonstrations condemning the “indifferent attitude” of the government towards work charged employees, demanding that the court orders regarding the Forum’s demands be implemented and asking for the right of work charged employees to “earn for livelihood.” This was informed in a joint statement issued by the All Nagaland Inter Departmental Joint Forum, All Nagaland PWD Field Workers Association, All Nagaland PWD Mechanical Field Staff Association, All Nagaland Field Staff Association PHED, Town Planning Works Division Office, UDD Dimapur, Medical Department, Police Engineering Project, ANEFWA, I&FC and the Industries and Commerce Department.

DIMAPUR, MARCH 14 (MExN): The Nagaland SSA Teachers Association has declared that the ongoing agitation, demanding release of pending salaries, will continue until the Nagaland state government fulfills its four point demands submitted on March 6. A press note from the NSSATA informed that the Central Government releases funds of SSA to the State implementing agencies in two installments annually: “one in April for expenditures between April to September and the second in September for expenditures between October and March.” The Government of India also releases ad-hoc grant in April every year which is subsequently adjusted based on the approval of Annual Work Plan and Budget for the year, it added. In this, the association said that if the Government of Nagaland and its implementing agencies had done the needful (i.e., furnishing of the utilisation certificates and due submission of the 10% share), the present problems faced by the SSA teachers would not have cropped up. It further requested all concerned district authorities to release the salary for November 2013, as per the finance order dated February 26.

DIMAPUR, MARCH 14 (MExN): Nagaland MLA and MACROFED LTD Chairman, Mmhonlumo Kikon today urged the Nagaland government and the concerned department to “restrain the Nagaland Foothill Road Construction Committee (NFHRCC) from interfering in the execution of the construction of the Foothill Road.” “As a watch dog, it might continue to see that the road is constructed on time and in terms of the specifications. Their involvement must end there,” he stated in a press note, in response to recent statements from the NFHRCC. Referring to the formation of the committee, the MLA appreciated citizens for taking a pro-active role in governance. However, he asserted that “pro-active citizenry cannot usurp the reins of power vested in bodies sanctioned by law.” The MLA expressed shock that construction for the Foothill Road “began without even an NIT being floated.” He stated that “through a process known only to the concerned department, the NFHRCC and Imtikumzuk, Proprietor of Trident Enterprises,” the contract for the construction of the foothill road, worth Rs. 16 Crores, was awarded to the aforesaid Imtikumzuk. However, he said that since the longest stretch of the foothill road passes through Wokha district, contractors of the said district started “ventilating their grievances.” As a result

stop the blame game: nsf

DIMAPUR, MARCH 14 (MExN): The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has urged the Nagaland Foot Hill Road Construction Committee (NFHRCC) and the Wokha District Class-1 Contractors Union, or any individual or group to, “stop the blame game but focus on the greater cause of the Nagas.” The NSF, in a press note, stated that the Foothill Road “should not be considered as a money-making project at the cost of the general public.” It appealed against “more divisions and misunderstanding amongst Naga brethrens because of this noble project.” It called upon the Naga people to “thank the government and the department for giving prior importance for the construction of the rod and at the same time appreciate the initiative taken by the NFHRCC for monitoring the entire construction.” It stated that this project “is for the people and belongs to the people; not the Nagaland Foot Hill Road Construction Committee (NFHRCC) or Wokha District Class-1 Contractors Union nor any group or individual.” As such, it urged the NFHRCC as well as the Wokha District Class-1 Contractors Union to “leave aside individual interest or differences, amicably resolve the misunderstanding and go ahead with the construction works, failing which any group or individual responsible for creating hindrance and hampering this noble project will be answerable to the Naga people.” It informed that the NSF had submitted several representation and memorandums to the government in the past years for construction of the ongoing Road. Therefore, it said that even if the Federation is not a part of any committee for the construction of the Road, it is “very much a part of this agenda, which concerns the Nagas in general.” NSF made its stand clear that it would not allow this project to be jeopardized because of “petty differences or selfish motives,” and demanded that the project be completed as per specifications and within the stipulated time. of which, he “personally intervened” and “convened a meeting with departmental officials, the contractor concerned and the contractors of Wokha District in February, 2014 in the residence of the Chief Engineer, Road and Bridges, Kohima.” Stating that the NFHRCC was not invited to this meeting, the MLA said that “Imtikumzuk and the contractors of Wokha District, in my presence and in the presence of the Chief Engineer, agreed to settle the matter amicably.” He added that Imtikumzuk, the contractor “agreed to execute powers of attorney in favour of certain contractors of Wokha District.” Accordingly, the Chief Engineer, R&B divided the

length of the road in Wokha District and apportioned different lengths thereof to the aforesaid contractors. Based on this settlement, the contractors of Wokha District began the works allotted to them, he informed. However, the MLA stated that the statements made by the NFHRCC “are provocative and defamatory in nature and will be addressed at the appropriate time and in the appropriate forum.” He asserted that “public interest must not be sacrificed for vested interests, which benefit a few” and that the “duties and responsibilities of governance must not be abdicated to favour such vested interests.” Full text on page 4

Contractors call for strict monitoring of tender bids Morung Express news Dimapur | March 14

Contractors in Nagaland have called for stricter monitoring mechanisms, while awarding work contracts to tender bidders. As is usually the norm, in the civil contracts business, the winning bids are those which quote the lowest possible amount against the estimated cost of a certain project. This process has had a negative impact on the resultant work, according to contractors involved in the roads sectors. Unofficial tax deductions,

before the actual execution of work, further slashes down the amount involved, ultimately affecting the work quality. “Class I Government registered contractors participating in the National Highway e-tendering relating to IRQP (Improvement of Riding Quality Programme) and PR (Periodical Repair) works in the state of Nagaland’, convened in Dimapur on March 14 to deliberate on the matter. In the meeting, a recent tender bidding process was highlighted as an example. The work involved was a road improve-

ment project stretching 27 kilometers on National Highway 155, starting from km 150-177 falling under National Highway Division, Tuensang. The tender value (amount) was Rs. 15, 87, 57,298andthetendernotice,inviting online bids, appeared in November, 2013. Nine bidders participated in the bidding; the work going to the bidder quoting an amount 30.5 percent below the schedule of rate, it was disclosed. The winning bid was Rs. 11, 05, 50, 639. The stated amount, the contractors said, will not meet the actual cost involved.

Unsolicited tax deductions, reaching as high as 20 percent of the total amount, will further reduce the fund sanctioned for the project. This leaves contractors with no option but to compromise on the work quality, it was added. The concerned contractors will reconvene at Hotel Japfu, Kohima on March 15 to further discuss the matter. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm and intending bidders, “who are going to participate in the recent tender on NH 61 & 155 are requested to attend.”

The party inspires citizens with their firm stand against corruption and ViP culture," Sharmila said. Church leaders asks Mizo govt not to lift prohibition

GuwAhATi, MArch 14 (hT): "This is my aTM," says Jyotish Talukdar, pointing to a largish pond in a grassy village on the edge of a hill in assam's Sonapur, just outside the capital city of guwahati. The climbing perches, a type of small asian freshwater fish, bob up frequently, as they typically "walk" over the water in bouts of jerky movements, flexing their oblong body and spiky fins. assam's Sonapur, a lush haven, is exploding with "leisure resorts", most of them cheaply done-up highway stopovers. But they offer a thriving ready market for the fish. "Whenever i need money, i just reach for my fishing nets," Talukdar says. a clutch of previously foot-dragging states, such as assam, is poised to overtake Punjab and haryana as the new powerhouses

AizAwl, MArch 14 (PTi): Mizoram Kohhran hruaitute committee (MKhc), a conglomerate of leaders of 14 major churches in the state, on friday urged the government not to lift prohibition on liquor. MKhc, headed by the Presbyterian church Mizoram Synod Moderator Rev K lalhmuchhuaka, urged the state government to continue with the enforcement of the dry law imposed in the state on february 20, 1997. "We found it regrettable that the state government had intentions to lift the prohibition while the MKhc was standing firm on its stance on liquor and prohibition," the church leaders said. MKhc held that drinking is against the teachings of the Bible and lifting of prohibition would be disastrous for the people of Mizoram. They urged the state government to make the Mizoram liquor Total Prohibition act, 1955 more stringent and enforce it more strictly.

Quietly, green revolution 2.0 takes root in Assam of india's farm economy. Small farmers like Talukdar is driving this revolution, thanks to a programme started 10 years ago, the impact of which is beginning to show. The assam agricultural competitiveness Project, unlike many usual farm interventions, focuses on small farmers by encouraging them to view farming as a cluster of activities. The $ 211 million (about `1308 crore) programme, funded by the World Bank and implemented by assam has created several milestones. The volume of crops being brought to market has increased eight-fold, rice yields have doubled and milk and fish yields have risen substantially. in Nowgaon district's diffolo village, authorities aim to turn around the entire local-bred goat popu-

Several women activists under the banner of Sharmila Kanba lup (Save Sharmila Movement) are also participating in the fast with the human rights crusader. The Morung Express

Mmhonlumo clarifies on NFHRCC

T

he Nagaland Foothill Road Construction Committee (NFHRCC) has been issuing press statements in the local dailies alleging acts of omission/commission on my part in relation to the construction of the foothill road. I do not have the desire neither the inclination to engage in a paper war with the members of the aforesaid committee. That being said, I feel it would be a failure on my part if the correct facts and circumstances of the construction of the foothill road is not placed in the public domain. The much talked about foothill road, a long felt need of the people living in the border areas of the State, became a reality in the year 2013. Whilst all eyes were on the Government to see as to how this construction project would be initiated and completed, a surprising development took place. Out of the blue, a committee in the name and style of Nagaland Foothill Road Construction Committee (NFHRCC) came into being. How and in what manner this committee was selected and what is the mandate with which it is vested is known only to its members. Personally, I appreciate citizens for taking a pro-active role in governance. However, my appreciation is qualified to the extent that the pro-active citizenry cannot usurp the reins of power vested in bodies sanctioned by law.

From the very inception, it appears that the NFHRCC has embedded itself in each and every aspect of the foothill road construction. The question that arises is, is the Government and the concerned Department abdicating its responsibilities in favour of the said committee? The corollary to this question is, can the Government abdicate its responsibilities to such committees? The formation cutting of the foothill road began in December 2013. In this day and age, the old Naga ways of “Khushi Khushi” is not relevant and/or desirable and actions based on this practice have been questioned at every turn. The practice of “Khushi Khushi” is anathema to the rule of law. It therefore came as a shock, not just for me but to all sections of society when the construction began without even an NIT being floated. Apparently, through a process known only to the concerned Department, the NFHRCC and Mr. Imtikumzuk, Proprietor of Trident Enterprises, the contract for the construction of the foothill road worth Rs. 16 crores was awarded to the aforesaid Mr. Imtikumzuk. Since the longest stretch of the foothill road passes through Wokha District, the contractors of the said District were offended and started ventilating their grievances. Given the public interest in

the expeditious construction of the road, I personally intervened. The contractors of the Wokha District expressed their desire to seek legal redressal. With a view to avoiding consequent delays, I impressed upon the contractors the desirability of co-operating with the Government. Towards this end, I convened a meeting with Departmental officials, the contractor concerned and the contractors of Wokha District in the month of February, 2014 in the residence of the Chief Engineer, Road and Bridges, Kohima. Needless to say, the NFHRCC was not invited to this meeting. In this meeting, Mr. Imtikumzuk and the contractors of Wokha District in my presence and in the presence of the Chief Engineer agreed to settle the matter amicably. Mr. Imtikumzuk, the contractor agreed to execute powers of attorney in favour of certain contractors of Wokha District. The Chief Engineer, R & B divided the length of the road in Wokha District and apportioned different lengths thereof to the aforesaid contractors. Based on this settlement, the contractors of Wokha District began the works allotted to them. Mr. Supu Jamir, the Convenor of the NFHRCC along with other members of the committee has been issuing press statements attacking me personally. These statements are provocative and defama-

tory in nature and will be addressed at the appropriate time and in the appropriate forum. In the 14.3.13 edition in all the local papers, the full extent of the manner in which the NFHRCC is attempting to wrest control of the construction of the foothill road is revealed. In his article “Why foothill road is an extraordinary project”?, Mr. Supu Jamir stated that the concerned Department offered the contract to the NFHRCC and the said committee in turn “after much deliberation” awarded the contract to Imtikumzuk “as it is fully expressed that there is no competent contractor from the Lotha tribe”. I was completely speechless and dumbfounded when I read this article. “History” is being created in the construction of this “historic road” by the “historic mission”. Would it be imaginable for a social organisation to be formed for taking over the reins of governance? In relative terms, this is exactly what the NFHRCC is doing who also claimed that it can provide security to the contractor Mr. Imtikumzuk. Such public statements have the effect to reducing governance in the State to an utter mockery. Public interest must not be sacrificed for vested interests which benefit a few. The duties and responsibilities of governance must not be abdicated to favour such vested interests. As earlier stated,

I have nothing personal against the NFHRCC or any of its members. Governance must be fair and transparent and it is my duty as a representative of the people to ensure this. Therefore, I would urge the Government and the concerned Department to restrain the NFHRCC from interfering in the execution of the construction of the foothill road. As a watch dog, it might continue to see that the road is constructed on time and in terms of the specifications. Their involvement must end there. I would also urge the Government to cancel the contract awarded and in the interest of the State, initiate and execute the construction of the road through a fair and transparent manner by publishing NITs and inviting all eligible contractors to participate. Mr. Supu Jamir in his article states that there are no competent contractors from the Lotha tribe. Such a sweeping, baseless and unfounded statement is unbecoming of any person, more so, when it comes from a person who is a practising advocate. I issue this statement without any malice towards any person and I hope that it will be appreciated in its proper perspective. Mmhonlumo Kikon M.L.A Chairman, MARCOFED LTD

businEss Coal India executives call off strike

NEW DELHI, MarcH 14 (PTI): Coal India executives, who were protesting against non-fulfilment of their demands including performance-related pay, have called off their strike after talks with the management. “The strike has been deferred as assurances have been given by the Coal India management on their (employees) issue with regard to performance-related pay referred by the committee of secretaries to the Cabinet. So, that is a major progress,” CIL director (HR) R Mohan Das said. Coal Mines Officers Association of India (CMOAI) general secretary P K Singh said, “We have decided to defer the strike after the assurance for four to five weeks.” The CMOAI had earlier called for a three-day strike that began on Thursday. Coal India has a strong workforce of 3.49 lakh employees, of which 19,000 executives had called for strike pressing for implementation of performance-related pay and new pension scheme, which

requires the coal ministry’s nod. CMOAI president V P Singh had earlier said: “We are meeting with Coal India management...to hold discussions with regard to performance-related pay for executives.” He had also said the committee of secretaries held a meeting on the issue and decided to refer the matter to the Cabinet. The two-day strike called by trade unions in February last year had led to a production loss of around 0.71 million tonnes (MT). CIL accounts for over 80 per cent of domestic coal production. It has fixed a target of 482 MT for 2013-14. The company, before the strike, was expecting only 465 MT of production. CIL workers’ unions had said they are not supporting the strike and expressed their keenness to keep production on track. “When the economy is in doldrums and Coal India is facing a shortfall in production, strike is not desired at this stage,” Jibon Roy, general secretary, All India Coal Workers Federation, had said.

‘The self-contained, waterless toilet has the capability of heating human waste to a high enough temperature to sterilise human waste and create biochar...’

NEW York, MarcH 14 (IaNS): A revolutionary toilet fueled by the sun that is being developed to help some of the 2.5 billion people around the world lacking safe and sustainable sanitation would be unveiled in India this month. “The self-contained, waterless toilet has the capability of heating human waste to a high enough temperature to sterilise human waste and create biochar, a highly porous charcoal,” informed project principal investigator Karl Linden, professor of environmental engineering at University of Colorado Boulder. The biochar can be used to both increase crop yields and sequester carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas.

The project is part of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s ‘Reinvent the Toilet Challenge’, an effort to develop a next-generation toilet that can be used to disinfect liquid and solid waste while generating useful end products. Linden’s team is one of the 16 teams around the world funded by the Gates ‘Reinvent the Toilet Challenge’ since 2011. All have shipped their inventions to Delhi where they will be on display March 20-22 for scientists, engineers and dignitaries. “The invention consists of eight parabolic mirrors that focus concentrated sunlight to a spot no larger than a postage stamp on a quartzglass rod connected to eight bundles of fibre-optic cables, each consisting of thousands of intertwined, fused fibres,” Linden explained. The energy generated by the sun and transferred to the fibre-optic cable system can heat up the reaction chamber to over 600 degrees Fahrenheit to treat the waste material, disinfect pathogens in both feces and urine and produce char. Biochar is a valuable material. It

has good water holding capacity and it can be used in agricultural areas to hold in nutrients and bring more stability to the soils. A soil mixture containing 10 percent biochar can hold up to 50 percent more water and increase the availability of plant nutrients. “Additionally, the biochar can be burned as charcoal and provides energy comparable to that of commercial charcoal,” Linden added. Tests have shown that each of the eight fibre-optic cables can produce between 80 and 90 watts of energy, meaning the whole system can deliver up to 700 watts of energy into the reaction chamber, said Linden. While the current toilet has been created to serve four to six people a day, a larger facility that could serve several households simultaneously is under design. Unsafe methods to capture and treat human waste result in serious health problems and death food and water tainted with pathogens from fecal matter results in the deaths of roughly 700,000 children each year.

Boundary between the Nagas and Assamese

T

he boundary between the Nagas and Assam is yet to be settled and the same case is kept pending in the Supreme Court of India for disposal. To speak the truth that the original boundary between the Nagas and Assam was demarcated by the British-India Govt. during the 19th Century and you will find out the same report from the following available book. 1. The North East Frontier of India by Sir Alexander Mackenzie 2. The Assam Surveyed Map 3. The Manipur Boundary Surveyed Map 4. The History of Nagaland by B.B Ghosh 5. The Angami Naga Country 6. The Lotha Naga Tribe etc. And the GOI knows those historical facts as because the 9th Points Agreement as well as the 16th Points Agreement were made between the Nagas and Govt. of India (GOI) based on those historical facts. And in which, the land of Nagas measuring 5000 sq miles have been encroached by the British-India Govt. which area is presently under the Assam Govt. and the same areas is agreed to return Nagas by the GOI while the Nagaland statehood was created. According to historical fact and various agreements made between the Nagas and the GOI were agreed to return the land of Nagas, and in which the vast areas of land at West Point of the present Nagaland state between the Golaghat upto North Chachar is absolutely belong to three Naga tribes of Tenyimis such as 1. Rengma Naga Tribe 2. The Mighty Angami Naga Tribe and 3. Zeliang Naga Tribe that the same area is falls within the conquered land of their forefathers and as such, the said area of Tenyimis land claim by the Karbi Anglong Mikirs) or by the Govt. of Assam is totally wrong and baseless issue. Incase, if the Nagas willing to settle within their own forefather’s conquered land, no one shall have right from the Assam side to stop the Nagas as land encroachers. And in this connection, I request both the local authorities to settle the said areas of land with the traditional land owners of the Tenyimis. And no overground Govt. or underground Govt. from the Assam side shall threaten the Nagas as land encroachers. As because, the Nagas have right to go ahead till they reached their original land mark set by their forefathers. The Nagas are patiently awaiting the GOI for peaceful settlement of their land boundary. But the Nagas shall not tolerate anymore if the Labours of the British-India always threaten the Nagas with their Bows and Arrows within the Naga Traditional land. And in this boundary issue, the river of Lengri Nodi (Keserii) is never the traditional boundary of the Angami Naga tribe. As because the traditional boundary of Tenyimis is far beyond the so called Lengri Nodi (River) as mentioned above. And as such the person who do not know about the original land boundary of the Tenyimis which were set by their forefathers are hereby warned. As because the present boundary Pillars which were placed by the Assam Forest Dept. are not the mutual boundary pillars between the Nagas and Assam which can never be accepted. If you want some portion of land within the conquered areas of Tenyimis, ask the owner, get its permission and go ahead according to law of the land. LOCAL ‘11 yrs of NPF misrule in Nagaland…’ - NPCC booklet

The Morung Express

Our Correspondent

Extracts from the booklet

Kohima | March 14

Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president S.I. Jamir today released a booklet entitled “11 years of NPF misrule in Nagaland under Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio”, an expose by NPCC here today at Congress Bhavan. The booklet containing 54 pages stated that 11 years of NPF rule under the leadership of chief minister Neiphiu Rio has stunted the growth and development of the State. “The total misgovernance is reflected by the dilapidated condition of infrastructures all over the state. Instead of governing the state, the chief minister has been more concerned and pre occupied with countless festive and merrymaking activities.” It also alleged that years

all ends while other states have progressed rapidly in all fields. The booklet also said that the now “infamous” slogan of the NPF and its coalition partners during state assembly elections in 2003 promising to bring solution to the vexed Indo-Naga political issue within three months, if voted to power, has been relegated to the

background. “The chief minister’s professed policy of equicloseness with underground groups has yielded more negative returns. The growing resentment of the public against the UG groups for its high handedness and ruthlessly taxing every item worth its name threatens to derail the Naga political settlement,” the

NPCC asserted. The NPCC also stated that the mushrooming of parallel government across the state that has hijacked the writ of the state on the issue of Naga nationalism, and DAN government turning a blind eye to the “nefarious activities” have severely affected people across all sections of the society. It accused that author-

ity of an elected government has been greatly compromised on countless occasions when the state machinery broke down completely in the face of grave law and order situation that put the lives of its citizens at great peril. It declared that rampant extortions, kidnapping, murders etc have become a routine affairs and have compounded the misery of the people. The NPCC also added that the frequency with which chief minister Rio paid visit to top BJP leaders in Delhi has never gone unnoticed, stating “hobnobbing with the BJP known more for its ideological moorings with the RSS that is even despised by majority of liberal Hindus for their communal and divisive agenda does not augur well for a Christian majority state like Nagaland.”

Customs dept caution against fraudsters DC & DEO Kiphire district informs on election guWahaTi, March 14 (MExn): The Deputy Commissioner for Customs, Guwahati and Dimapur division has cautioned that certain unscrupulous elements and “possibly even members of organized crime syndicates” have been duping and cheating ordinary citizens by impersonating as Customs Officers and swindling large sums of money from unsuspecting people. A press note from the department informed that these criminals have a country wide network and have spread their tentacles deep into the telecom subscriber database and have even found ways to evade checks maintained by the country's banking system. The note stated that, as per information received, cases

of people getting duped by such fraudsters have been reported from many states in this region. Already several cases have been reported at Guwahati. Shillong, Kohima and Dimapur, it added. Explaining the modus operandi of the fraudsters, it informed that they contact unsuspecting individuals, informing them of the arrival of a lucrative consignment from abroad, sent by a person, whom the victim has befriended on the internet. These calls are usually made from unlisted mobile telephone numbers. The victim is then asked to deposit a certain amount of money for clearance of customs duty. For this purpose, the victim is provided with a bank account number, which invariably belongs

to a private individual. The note further said that the callers “usually display a sense of urgency and advice people not to delay the payment, as that might result in forfeiture of the package.” As such, it notified the public that neither the department of customs, nor any of its officers make any unsolicited calls to anybody for deposit of Customs Duty. It further informed that customs duty, if any is always deposited in a government account and can be deposited only in designated banks. The public have been cautioned and advised to desist from making any such payment in the name of customs duty and that such calls should be made known to the local police station

DiMapur, March 14 (MExn): United Naga Tribes Association (UNTA) has expressed distress at the “adverse press statements” issued by various Naga organisations and villages bordering Assam as carried in the daily papers “criticizing one another while the entire Naga people want to bring about an amicable settlement to the vexed border issue between the State of Nagaland and Assam so that the people of Assam and Nagaland can co-exist peacefully just as our forefathers have maintained from time immemorial.” Keeping such view in mind, UNTA said it has been appreciating the stand of the Government of Naga-

land in matters to the border issue and have been extending co-operation to the Dimapur district administration in particular for understanding the ground realities. While anticipating the Supreme Court’s verdict for its arbitration and disposal, UNTA in a press release has strongly appealed to all concerned Naga people to “stop criticizing and quarrelling unwittingly among ourselves so as to avoid creating more problems and misunderstanding amongst the people concerned.” The release appended by UNTA chairman Chuba Jamir and secretary Hukavi Yepthomi further appealed to all the stakeholders to

stop once for all the unnecessary and cheap statements that provoke each other. Meanwhile, UNTA strongly condemned the “high handedness of the Assam police for continuously arresting the Naga people who are residing along the border since these people are not trespassing nor are the encroachers.” Stating that “under no circumstances mere villagers can be arrested and kept in Police remand and unlawfully booked them under NSA,” UNTA strongly urged the Assam police and Diphu administration to immediately release those Naga people booked under various Acts.

People, life, etc... Saturday | 15 march, 2014

make street vendors Burning Forest Burning Life partners in development Things We Do...

W

e know too well that our life is dependent on natural resources and forest resource is one of them. We must take utmost care to preserve it at all cost but the irony is that we vehemently destroy it anyhow, anywhere, anytime at any will. The natural vegetation that we get for our daily needs comes mostly from the forest viz. medicinal herbs, fruits, vegetables, flowers, plants, grasses, woods, timbers, etc. We can go on naming tens and thousand of things that we have on this mother earth and you will know it all comes from the forest and not from our kitchens. Rain, water, spring, stream and rivers exist because of the forest. The most essential elements of life giving sources that we need in every fraction of our life is air and this comes from the forest not from our stomachs. In short, without forest we simply perish because everything that we need for our daily nourishment is with the forest, in the forest and from the forest. The uses of forests can be briefly summarised in two heads as follows: Commercial uses: It includes timber, firewood, charcoal, pulpwood, food items, vegetables, fruits, beverages, spices, gum, resins, edible oils, non-edible oils, rubber, fibres, lac, bamboo canes, fodder, medicine, drugs, minerals, etc. Environmental uses: It includes regulation of water cycle, produces life giving oxygen, absorbs deadly pollutants (air and noise pollutions); act as sink of carbon dioxide, habitat for wild life, conservation of soil, etc. Having such state of affairs, what is important for us is to become aware of the immense value that forest has for our sustenance. Therefore, if we value life we should value forest. If we care to live a little longer, if we care for our today, if we care for our tomorrow, and if we care to live in a clean and safe environment then we should first care forest. On the contrary, what we do care about today is our kitchens and stomachs and we measure the forest assets according to the

Lokho Savio asst. Professor, don Bosco college, maram

sizes of our kitchens and stomachs. Everything that we see around the forests we see it in terms of our dishes and delicacies and how that would please our stomachs. For which reason we don’t care to burn the whole hills just for a piece of squirrel or rat. We don’t mind to set on fire ranges of mountains just for a single piece of roasted deer or wild pig or stag, etc., thinking that “even if I spare them today, it would be hunted down by others tomorrow so it’s better that I get it for myself.” We don’t mind burning down to ashes ranges of hills to harvest a few bags of paddy/maize/master-seed. We don’t care to burn/ churn groves of wood for a few bags of charcoal. Also, we cut down trees after trees for a few “shaktimun/ truck” loads of timber or firewood arguing that “without this where is my income?” We don’t care to cut down the whole fruit trees just for a handful of fruits arguing “everybody does the same.” We don’t mind chopping off the entire branches of the vegetable plants for a dish or two reasoning “that’s how it was done.” We don’t even care to uproot the roots of wild vegetables arguing that the roots are tastier than the stems and leaves. So also, we don’t care to fell the trees in front of our houses or resting-sheds or view-points, or peak of the hills/mountains because it obstructs our view to overlook down the vale. We don’t care either to burn

the entire forest land just to gratify our itching fingers on seeing the dried leaves. We don’t care to set on fire the entire pastureland whenever we lit a biri/cigar. Every little farm that we cultivate cannot go without burning the soil either. We always heaped up soil to small mounds with some dried sticks as firelighter underneath and burn it for days. Also, we burnt up the bushes around the farms so as to avoid the fencing from wild fire by some fire-addicted miscreants. But the fact remains the same that we are all habituated to burning forest consciously or unconsciously. In the process, we had drastically destroyed a good portion of our forest resources, grassland, and farm land. The immediate consequences of these acts of deforestation are the following: We get little or no rain at all for months at a stretch. Springs, ponds, rivers in our land are drying up. Exhaustion of flora and fauna (forest vegetation and wild life). The temperature is soaring up at an alarming rate year by year. The fertility of the soil had degraded to the extent that without artificial manures/urea nothing grows in our land. Organic farming in our land is a far cry for now, as the question stands, from where do we get the raw materials for such endeavours? If we observe carefully,

the increase of population queuing up at the hospitals, clinics and dispensaries is never a surprise. It’s not at all that we are health conscious and are going for regular medical check up but we are severely affected by environment related diseases known or unknown to us at alarming degrees. Ultimately, we became victims of our own actions. We have mercilessly destroyed our forest life and thereby we suffer mercilessly. Destroying forest simply means destroying the ecosystem and destroying the ecosystem again means destroying our very life and existence. The very core of coexistence between the organic/biotic and in-organic/abiotic is balance. The sad thing today is that this balance had been destroyed irreparably. We are dangerously heading towards a great catastrophe if we don’t take care. Therefore, exploitation of forest resources should be undertaken wisely and skilfully. We should be going from door to door and shout at the top of our voice and tell everyone that “No forest no life”. We should be on our guard and check those thoughtless and reckless people who indiscriminately burn forest at will. We should be armed to teach these greedy and vicious people to stop existing because they are threats to our existence. They are the destroyers of environment and torturers of life and therefore

should be punished in line with those of criminals. It is high time that the general public become aware of this fact that without forest resources life on this earth is impossible and should take up a comprehensive mass awareness or movement in conserving forest instead of burning it away callously. Moreover, the government agencies and concerned departments should not remain as dormant spectators but move out of their cosy chairs, pull up their sleeves and start working on war footing for the preservation of forest before it is too late. To bring awareness to the common people the various agencies and departments should organise seminars and workshops on Watershed Management, Ecosystem, Global Warming and other environment related issues as this is the need of the hour. What we need today is working government not talking government. The district administrations, the subdivisional blocks have to be strengthened with working officers not with visiting officers. The district fire departments should be made aware that they need water to douse the fire not with fire to douse the fire and that vehicles are to be filled with water on time to face any eventualities. The forest departments should not only guard the check gates but also guard the forests. The common people should also give up the habit of shifting blame to the government for their inaction after deliberately burning down the forest, destroying properties, etc. We, the general public along with the government should condemn the act of forest burning at par with murderous crime because it is equivalent to the act of mass killings, killing people’s life in general. The fact is this, can we survive without forest vegetations? Is there any human person who can exist without water? Is there anyone who can live without oxygen? The answer obviously is “NO”. Then from where do these life giving resources come from? The answer undoubtedly is “FOREST”. For this reason “Burning Forest Burning Life”.

s in other parts of the world, street food has been a source of some gastronomic delights in India. A charm not easy to replicate in other formats. Some food items like samosas, kachoris, bhel puri, pav bhaji and batata vada in India, ramen in Japan, Pad Thai in Thailand and shawarma in Turkey are primarily products of street vendors. But street vending is not just about serving regional delicacies or satisfying a person's hunger at reasonable prices. It is also about selling a host of other items of consumption at a fraction of what it would cost in a regular shop since the former format does not have the load of some state levies. For society at large, it is also a matter of livelihood for more than 10 million people in India alone, as per official estimates. The contribution of street vendors cannot, thus, be undermined. Even the Supreme Court held in 1989 that street vendors have a fundamental right to pursue their trade with proper regulation. Yet, for long, those who are meant to extend them protection while pursuing their trade have often turned adversaries. Street vendors have been exploited and their plight remained neglected. Much of this has to do with lack of clear guidelines for their vocation, coupled with the "hafta", or protection/extortion-money. A ray of hope comes with the passage of a model bill by parliament to protect their livelihood and regulate the trade. But the delivery of what is officially called The Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Bill, 2012, is a more serious issue and needs to be tackled. There is the question whether parliament has the powers to pass such a law. Much time was wasted on this. In 2006, in reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament, the government said street vending was a state subject. Hence the central government did

not have the constitutional mandate to enact such a law. Again in 2009, the government took a similar stand, but said a model law had been prepared for states to adopt. On the insistence of the National Advisory Council, chaired by Sonia Gandhi, the government finally agreed that street vending also covered issues such as social security, employment, workers' welfare and social planning, because of which it fell in the Concurrent List. The Supreme Court, too, in a verdict delivered in October 2010, directed the government at both the central and state levels to enact laws that looked at the livelihood as well as regulatory issues connected with street vending. Accordingly, it was decided that matters pertaining to welfare and societal issues of street vending would fall under the Concurrent List. Those connected with municipalities and their functions would be governed under the jurisdiction of states. Some of the plus points of the bill: • Demarcation of vending zones along with restrictions • Compulsory registration and vending certificate • Formulation of street vending plan every five years • Mechanism to address grievances, with time frame for decisions • States to implement within six months of enactment of central law These provisions have been welcomed. But the model bill also raises some issues. For example, some states like Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Rajasthan have enacted laws to protect and regulate street vendors and their trade. But now, some provisions of the central bill are in clear conflict with the state laws. Major divergences, are in areas like norms for assigning hawking rights, penalties for non-compliance, constitution of a street vending committee, its role and membership, and dispute settlement. The parliamentary Standing Committee on Housing and

Urban Poverty Alleviation highlighted some of these. Like the bill does not apply to railway land, its premises and trains, which the committee wanted re-visited. An estimated 23 million people in India travel by train every day and hawkers, more often than not, are the main source of food for commuters. Similarly, the model bill lacks provisions to ensure that all stakeholders are consulted in determining the vending zones. There are also differences between the central model bill and state legislation over powers and duties of town vending committees. These apart, if vendors with no certificates can be evicted based on the central law, it is equally important to have specific provisions to ensure the police and local authorities do not harass bona fide hawkers. But all that the bill specifies in this regard is that the police or local authorities shall not prevent a registered street vendor from carrying out his vocation under any other law. Since the thrust of the bill is to protect the interests of street vendors and regulate the trade, there is also the need to earmark specific budgets to carry out these tasks. An independent vigilance wing is also required to prevent extortion. Here, it will serve well if money is earmarked from the luxury tax and other levies the governments collect from restaurants and eateries. After a global study a few years ago, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) included street vendors into what it termed as the informal food sector and concluded that this trade flourished in the past despite its legality or state oppression and would continue to do so in the future. The UN body also said street food vendors must be co-opted as partners in local development. Policies and programmes must be drawn up to cater to their welfare with proper safeguards. It will serve the government well to not just take that advice for the informal food sector but also extrapolate it to the larger community of 10 million street vendors in India.

Khin Maung Lay is one of many Myanmar journalists who last year embraced the chance to produce independent daily newspapers free from censorship for the first time in five decades. It was not the government that shut him down, but economics: His paper and others have been losing money as they struggle to compete with state-owned papers for advertisers and circulation. One year after publishers and editors took advantage of a decision by the country's nominally civilian government to lift a half-century-old ban on private dailies, the feeling of euphoria is fading. the country's nominally civilian government to lift a half-century-old ban on private dailies, the feeling of euphoria is fading. Khin Maung Lay's paper, Golden Fresh Land, published its last edition Wednesday. It is the first well-known private daily to fold, but 11 others that are still publishing also appear to be struggling. "All the daily newspapers except the pro-junta party newspapers are running at a loss," said an editor-in-chief of one of the most popular private dailies. He asked not to be

lishing House, suggested that many of the new publishers did not concentrate enough on making their newspapers profitable. His company publishes weekly and monthly publications but does not own daily papers. "Too many of the publications just focused on the product, not the market," Tha Tun Oo said. He said that in a developing nation of 60 million, "The media market is just too crowded." He thinks six or seven papers would be about right. After Myanmar won in-

named because he was not authorized to comment by management. "We are losing around 3 million kyat ($3,000) every day and many smaller papers are in the red too. Some can barely survive," he said. The more popular private dailies sell about 80,000 copies per day, far less than the three staterun newspapers, which all have circulations of more than 320,000. Though the state-run papers often read like government press releases, with stories like one

on a bridge inauguration that named every official in attendance, they have established distribution systems and nationwide printing presses. That allows them to sell papers virtually everywhere in Myanmar, while the private papers sell mostly in Yangon and other big cities such as Mandalay and Taunggyi. State-run papers also operate with public money, allowing them to keep the cost of advertisements low. Tha Tun Oo, chief executive officer of the media conglomerate Today Pub-

dependence from Britain in 1948, the country had a vibrant free press. Newsstands fluttered with more than 70 daily dailies in the Burmese, English, Indian and Chinese languages. But in 1964, after Gen. Ne Win seized power and began military rule, private businesses were abruptly nationalized. Once-popular papers were transformed into propaganda sheets. After generals handed over power to an elected government in 2011, the press became one of the fastest and most visible

beneficiaries of sweeping political and economic reforms. Censors put away their red pens, and on April 1, 2013, private dailies began publishing again. For Khin Maung Lay, it was a "second lease on life." He had been a senior newsman at the Burmeselanguage Mogyo daily before it was driven out of business by government pressure in 1964. He went to jail three times under Ne Win, including a threeyear stretch in "protective custody," a catchall phrase the military regime used to

imprison critics. Khin Maung Lay started Golden Fresh Land with a flock of young reporters, photographers and editors, mostly in the early and late 20s. He thought he could compete against well-established state-run papers and those operated by powerful political parties by offering reliable, quality news, but now says he underestimated the strong market forces at work. "The government's goodwill toward private dailies is minimal," Khin Maung Lay lamented. "Compared to the well-established state-run papers, we are really handicapped. It's like having the oars broken while you are rowing." "We feel very sorry not just for ourselves, but for uncle (Khin Maung Lay), who put everything he had into this paper in the last year," senior reporter Kyaw Kyaw Myint said with tremors in this voice. He was the one who tried to cheer his boss up with a bowl of pork stew his wife made. Khin Maung Lay will continue to run two weekly papers, but he said it won't be the same without the day-to-day buzz. It is a wistfulness that extended to his last editorial for Golden Fresh Land, titled, "Till we meet again."

What Next? – Aspirations and Career Development

T

he board and university exams are getting over for the degree course and many of our students are feeling a sense of relief that it is all over. For some of us it may be that we are happy with what we have done or written in the examination hoping to get good grades, while for others it may be a matter of concern and worry, may also lead to some type anxiety as we know that we have not fared well or have done justice to our studies, may be regretting for about the past. Many of us may be at crossroads not knowing what to do or how to spend the time. I met a few students who have completed the examinations and asked them what they are going to do during the holidays. Some had no idea of what they would do or did not even give a thought to it. May be you are one of them who needs guidance and help to spend this vacation constructively and productively preparing for the future as you await the results. Looking at our present scenario it may that a comprehensive career development and guidance service, a careers education programme and a wide range of career and study information, deciding which subjects to take at higher education and learning, and making well-informed career and tertiary study plans can be challenging and even daunting, especially in today’s rapidly changing global world and labour market. What is important in identifying the future career of our children and students is to understand them and their aspiration level and to develop these factors that need guidance and support. Parents need to identify and analyse barriers that restrict student learning and achievement and also their level of aspirations towards life and achievement. Student aspirations are an important determinant of success in higher education. Student aspirations involve inspiration through identifying short-term and long-term goals, and ambition in the form of well-defined strategies to maintain momentum towards these goals. Student aspirations are associated with a variety of positive student outcomes such as leadership skills, psychological well-being, and educational attainment and also enable them to a successful future.

Aspirations also provide direction for engagement, and determine the intensity with which students pursue their educational, career, and life objectives. Clearly, student aspirations play an important role in students’ development as well as in their achievement outcomes. It may be that we wait for the result to come and then to decide but it will be too late for the parents and students to launch of some interested educational career. Some of the threats and challenges our youth may face in this vacation may lead them to destruction and failures in life. In many cases students after exams lose sight of their goals in life. They become lethargic and lazy and try to justify their inactions through rest and recuperations. They may tell that they had been studying and so they need rest now and may say that they want to enjoy life without doing anything. There is a danger that many students may not do anything bad either doing any good and this is not the right thing to do. Students need to engage themselves in variety of activities to keep them fit for the next step of learning and achievement. Some of them may become addicted to internet and other social sites where they would spend most of their time in idle chat and talk. This time can be very tempting to many students to explore new areas in life with other friends and may lead them to drug and alcohol addiction. We are living in a time and age where we have a lot of information on all that we can think or imagine and many of us are allured by these attractions. When our young students are not guided properly it may lead to laziness and lose sight of higher goals in life. Parents have to become aware of the needs of their children and provide them help and support to make them understand that they need guidance in life and don’t just leave them to decide for themselves. There is a danger that our young women after the examinations may stay at home and watch television all the time not helping their parents at home and this can lead to quarrel and other unwanted situations in life.

Robert N. Solo: This is written by one of my close friends.

agree with me that we have greater dreams and aspirations for our children as our children do have their own dreams and aspirations. We want them to reach higher goals and achieve great heights in life and to bring laurels and appreciations to the family and clan. It may be that our aspirations and dreams may remain only a wish while our children may not come up to our expectations at times. I would like to suggest to the parents to spent time with the children and discuss the matter with them, tell them your concerns and make them aware of your aspirations. Though they are grown up and are able to make decisions for themselves but they lack experience and we need to give help and guidance to these young ones. Talk to them in clear and direct ways, don’t beat around the bush and make them get irritated. Be gentle with them and make them know that you care for them and you want them to become useful, successful and productive not only for themselves but for the entire society. Below are some useful tips that can help parents and students to undertake activities during this vacation.

and coaching. If you are looking for writing competitive examinations then go to some places where the trainings are available and get yourself coached. You can start preparing for competitive examinations that will keep you busy and fit. It may happen that as you keep thinking and planning the holidays may get over and you may not be prepared to face the new challenges that are awaiting you. Don’t have wishful thoughts, act now and you will have your reward. 4. Sports and Games: It can be another option for our young students that they get engaged in sports activities that can make them fit and healthy. 5. Knitting and Weaving: Young women can take up knitting and weaving from some institutions and can also help their mothers at home in doing household chores. 6. Computer Courses: In this high tech world everyone is expected be a computer savvy. It is time that you can learn software and hardware programmes. 7. Sales Persons: There is a need for young entrepreneurs to come up in life. This may be an opportunity for you to learn business and other techniques by employing yourself at some enterprises. 8. Music and Arts: An idle mind is devil’s workshop. If you don’t engage yourself in any activities it may lead you to boredom and other vices. It is advised you can take up some music courses or get yourself into drawings or other paintings that can keep you engaged. 9. Documentation: If you are clear about your goals in life, then it is time that you start gathering materials and resources pertaining to your subject. There are sources available in the news dailies, books

in the market and libraries and start reading them and document them for the future. 10. Typing and Stenography: Many students do not know how to type properly. They use computers for typing but they have not learnt how to type in a systematic way. A short course in typing can help them to master themselves in typing. This can help them in higher learning when they go for research in their respective subjects. “Education is a two-fold process of psychological development and integration into society. Teach them everything that is necessary to equip them for life” said St. Julie Billiart and now we live in a time where we no longer can predict about the future of anyone without having any specialisation in any one field. The world is fast moving in development in all aspects, there is this fight for the survival of the fittest. Every where the smartest and the best take the lead while many of us who are not prepared stand perplexed and vexed not knowing what to do or how to go about. This write up may help you to channelize your thoughts and make you ready and prepared for the future that you are aspiring to become. Parents motivate your children to undertake some activities, seek help from people who can guide your children. We have all information that we need to shape and mould our children today in the best way possible. The choices we make today will determine our success of tomorrow so choose carefully and properly for a bright and successful future. Fr. When Voting in India, What’s in a Name?

“KALomIngton,” I remember, nearly threw a fit. “Sadoschand” was more forgiving, even able to see some humor in it all. And “Debrokamilm On”? We never found out, because he or she never showed up to A veteran of several wars, he was proudest of how he and his regiment, the maratha Light Infantry, held the line in Arunachal Pradesh during the 1962 war with China. For General D’Souza’s efforts fighting Pakistan in 1971, our president awarded him the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, recognizing “distinguished service of the most exceptional order,” in 1974. In the election, none of this mattered. Despite my efforts, or possibly because of them, this certified war hero was soundly thrashed. But while it lasted, the campaign was an instructive, often even delightful, ride. my first up-close look at Indian politics, it opened my eyes to no end. At a meet-your-candidates gathering, for example, one candidate told us exactly why we should vote for him: He had “donated 86 bottles of blood” and was about to “go on strike against the Sea Rock Hotel.” Another referred to himself as “Doctor” and began every speech or conversation by pronouncing that he had written “several thousand letters to the editor.” At one point, he asked to meet the major general for a “frank” discussion. “There’s no room for two good candidates,” he said over coffee at a mutual friend’s elegant home, holding up two long fingers. “We’ll only divide each other’s votes. So I think you should withdraw in my favor.” In the days after Mr. D’Souza declined this generous offer, he got sever-

al reminders of certain letter-writing skills — he referred to them, chuckling, as “love letters.” All were typed on the same pink paper on the same typewriter with a faulty “s.” All were signed in the same blue ink by mysterious people named Alice or Melvyn, or just “Yours [sic] admirers.” All said similar things: “You are very old!”; “Votes will be divided because of you!”; “You should withdraw and help a good candidate like the Doctor to win.” Let’s just say the major general had a pretty good idea who wrote the love letters. On voting day, I was Mr. D’Souza’s polling agent, stationed inside a booth to represent him, along with agents for every other candidate. We had copies of the electoral roll for that particular booth, on which we ticked off the names of voters who showed up. my first brush with some of the realities of democracy came to me gradually through the day: Of an electorate of 1,067 for that booth, only 471 actually voted — less than 50 percent. I got a good sense of whom those 471 were. In an area filled with multistoried buildings, including mine, not one managed even a one-third turnout — the famously apathetic “middle” and “upper” classes, of course. In contrast, of 75 voters in a slum pocket sandwiched between two tall buildings on my lane, 74 voted. But not strolling down to the voting booth had at least one advantage: You might save yourself some exasperation, as experienced by a lady named Clementine. Our rolls had her down as “Kalomington.” Two decades later, I still remember her standing speechless, her face flushed in anger at her mutated name. Luckily, the officials in the booth also had the rolls in

Marathi, the local language, and there, her name was close enough to “Clementine” that they were willing to accept her photo ID. Later, a Sebastian found himself listed as “Sadoschand,” white-haired Benedicta and her son Nigel were “Bendikata” and “Naygil.” And if we never learned who “Debrokamilm on” was, I knew exactly who “Petristna Kayrsko” was, even though she was abroad and so didn’t turn up, either: my aunt Patricia Carrasco. The mangled names had this in common: They were usually Christian. Easily 95 percent of the Christian names were misspelled, most horribly so. In contrast, nearly every Hindu, most Muslim and about half the Parsi names were correct. Not that this indicated some religious bias. While enlisting voters, the electoral officers took down names in marathi and later transcribed them to print the rolls in English. Doing that, unfamiliar names like “Carrasco” and “Benedicta” morphed in unpredictable directions. Much has changed since 1995. Nobody uses typewriters anymore, so if today’s candidates — is the Doctor running again? — write love letters to each other, no faulty “s” will give them away. And I don’t have the electoral rolls, so I don’t know about mutilated names. Then again, this is 2014, and the rolls are on the Election Commission’s website, complete with a search engine. So I pulled up our constituency’s list of voters and tried to find my mother, Neela, in there. Eye-opener time, once again. First: When I searched, a message said she was not listed. But she has been on the rolls for decades; why would she have been removed? So I

pulled up the rolls themselves, which are in Marathi. I navigated to my ma’s street and, sure enough, found her name. Not only that: I also found my father, who died in 2007. Second: My father’s name is Joseph Bain D’Souza. This is relevant. Third: In the Marathi listing, my mother’s name is spelled “Nila” rather than “Neela.” I returned to the search engine with “Nila.” Bingo. How many people have been defeated because spelling errors mean they can’t search for their names? Fourth: The search also produced her “husband’s name,” which is “Josefaben.” Now, Gujaratis often refer to women with the suffix “-ben,” meaning “sister.” I can see my father now, guffawing over his mutation into “Josefa-ben,” a rangy six-foot sari-clad woman from Gujarat. Fifth: Have any of the mangled names from 1995 survived to 2014? Inquiring minds, like mine, want to know. From the 1995 rolls, I picked “Hebridata Joyn Didabrio” and “Kilveen Albart Didabrio,” listed as a 48-year-old male and a 42-year-old female, respectively. No, I have no idea what “Hebridata” and “Kilveen” might more correctly be, though “Didabrio” is probably “D’Abreu” and “Albart” likely “Albert.” So I searched online for “Hebridata.” Bingo. The 2014 rolls have “Hebridata John Didabrio” and “Kilavin Albert Didabrio” — some minor corrections in the names there. Nineteen years on, they are 62 and 63, respectively — some corrections in the ages too, clearly. Also, Hebridata is now listed as female and Kilavin male — some corrections in their genders as well, clearly.

I come from Mainland India, the only time I use this identity is when I am in the north east and I question why.I get some answers and I think it would have been much better if we could have left it to be just a geographical identity, if at all we needed to use it. This is my 4th visit to the North East of India and 2nd time to Nagaland and each time, I am overwhelmed by the love and care I receive. I am here for a wedding and never before have I seen friends and family helping so much; I had never seen people in cars calling out to people standing on the streets asking if they wanted a lift. And also, I had never met anyone who felt as strongly about their identity as people here do. Feeling that “I do not belong” is one of the worst feelings ever, be it in the family, at school, or the place we live in. During my last visit to Nagaland, I saw the pain, the hurt you still carry in your hearts. I felt responsible. Since that day more than a year ago, my heart is full of acknowledgement and apology for all the hurt you carry against India, a country you feel you do not belong to. My deepest wish is to help you come out of the hurt and bitterness. I am sincerely and deeply sorry. But here, I want to share one more thing. I am a 25 year old woman and I love travelling. Many times, I am looked at as an alien or an object in my own country. People from different states laugh at my way of speaking. I often get into an argument with the rickshaw wallas in Delhi because they never charge the same price and I feel so angry. But, what I don’t want “is to feel like a victim”. Yes, there are people who are indifferent, who taunt me because I am fat. Who make me want to run away but I know that I am not the only one who feels that way just as I am sure you too feel in the rest of India. There is indifference in the world but we need to remember that everyone is fighting a battle.

I agree that the way some of us from mainland India behave with people from the North East is just not right. But at the same time, there is injustice against some of us the moment we step out of our houses. I am beginning to understand what you must feel coming from your traditional backgrounds trying to develop your relation with a very ancient civilization like India. I also understand that you have a very deep rooted history. I still do not know much about it but I understand that it is underlined with blood, pain and loss. But should we let the past ruin the present and the future of our children? My uncle here says “Hurts not transformed are always transferred”. Are we unknowingly doing the same? I just want to say that you are not alone especially when facing difficulties, the intensity and context I am sure are different but we face it too, I face it too. We are fighting against humans when we should be fighting for humanity, for ALL of us and with love! No one can make you feel like a victim, like you do not belong, till you let them. We need to hold hands and work towards creating love and peace in the world. It is in the shelter of each other that we survive. Please help me, I love you and belong to you as much as I belong to my own brother. “What do we live for, if not to make life less difficult for others?” Will you be my friend?Yours, most sincerely, Zooni

naga Heritage for SAle?

Nukshi Alice: Today came across this website selling few doors and gates from Nagaland. Think this one looks like village gates from Kohima and there are other from Mon area. Really saddens me how we are getting rid of our heritage knowingly and unknowingly. Once it is gone, who is going to buy and bring them back to Nagaland. If there are any departments or organisations looking into preservations of out heritage please check into these trades.

Rozelle Mero: I have seen a number of them too.. The Ista Hotel In Hyderabad has them hanging on their walls and I was astounded with the price that Delhi antique showrooms were charging for things from home. I hope our original owners got even a quarter of what is being retailed. Peter Rutsa: Our present economy and future is in shambles under the present govt (not that it was SHINING during the tenure of the previous govt's and parties). Can't blame village folks from selling them items, its all for economic hardships. They not only need to eat like us urban nagas, but need cash for health care, education and other niceties of life. One thing is clear, it is 'rumoured' that some famous Naga personalities (besides foreigners and mainlanders) are helping others in this 'smuggling' business. John Jimo: By every possible we should not sell our ancients items but we have to preserve our forefathers traditional properties, so in order to preserve the ancient properties the current Government should take the initiative of setting up the museum in our own state so that we could be able to keep it safe and store carefully away all those objects and could be displayed in the museum as an historical cultural of the Nagas. Although every people around the world can visit our place for exhibition to see things of historical significance of the Nagas.

Mumbai building collapse: Death toll rises

MuMBai, March 14 (TNN): Seven people were killed and many were injured when a 7-storey building collapsed in Santa Cruz in Mumbai’s western suburbs on Friday morning. The deceased are: Chandraben Patel (46), Sudan Shridhan (32), Louis Monks (60), Sundarabai Pardhi (66), Aditya Pardhi (10), Ayush Pardhi (7) and Rajeshri Pardhi (35) The names of four people who are injured in the incident are: Akshay Kesarkar (21), Sitabai Kesarkar (70), Rohini Jagtap (40) and

Satyam Shridhan (32) The building was vacant but some people were living on the ground floor. The Shankarlok building located in Yashwant Nagar near Grand Hyatt Hotel collapsed on Friday afternoon and the dilapidated structure fell on the adjacent chawl, trapping many under the debris, a senior BMC official said. He, however, did not specify the number of people. The collapsed building was served demolition notice three times in 2007, 2008 and 2010, he said.

“Since it was a dilapidated building, notice was served thrice. However, the matter went to court and the demolition was stayed,” the official said. He said there were three families living in the building. “All BMC rules were followed. However, the residents went to the court,” he said. The injured have been admitted to a nearby civic hospital, an official at the BMC disaster management cell said. Rescue operations by fire brigade personnel and the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) was on

till late in the evening and there could be more casualties, the official said. The building collapsed on a slum adjoining to it. The Kesarkar and the Jagtap family were living in the chawl on which the building collapsed. The BMC has issued a notice to the chawls also to vacate as the building was posing a danger to them. With the elections approaching the incident is attracting several leaders, Priya Dutt and Poonam Mahajan have visited the spot. The injured have been admitted to VN Desai hospital.

Lack of sleep can Editors slam Arvind Kejriwal for ‘irresponsible’ media remark cause heart disease March 14 is World Sleep Day

New Delhi, March 14 (iaNS): How you sleep is a major determinant of how well your heart functions. A new study carried out on cardiac patients at the Sir Gangaram Hospital here revealed that around 96 percent of patients who have cardiovascular problems have sleep apnea. Sleep apnea, which is clinically called Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS), is a type of disorder characterized by pauses in breathing or instances of shallow or infrequent breathing during sleep. “Lack of sleep is directly related to cardiac diseases,” Sanjay Manchanda, head of Sir Gangaram Hospital’s Department of Sleep Medicine, told IANS. “Quality of sleep is very important. A good night’s sleep prevents heart attacks, diabetes as well as road accidents.” The study, carried out by the hospital in collaboration with Philips Healthcare, also proves the correlation between lack of sleep and heart ailments. It said that 58 percent of patients of cardiovascular disorders had severe sleep apnea and an estimated 85 percent of them were not aware that sleep apnea and cardiovascular diseases were correlated. Removing some of the myths associated with sleep apnea, the study further said that there is no correlation between weight and extent of sleep apnea. Even thin patients can develop the disorder. The severity of sleep apnea in cardiac patients was found to increase with age, the study said. Sleep apnea involves cessation of airflow for 10 seconds or more during the night due to partial or full collapse of the airway in human beings. The reduced or absent airflow results in high carbon dioxide and low oxygen. The sufferer is forced to increase his breathing effort against the collapsed airway. This means that the sufferer arouses to a lighter stage of sleep, which leads to sleep fragmentation and the person wakes up unrefreshed. Added Manchanda: “It is by far the single most common disorder seen at sleep centres and is responsible for more mortality and morbidity than any other sleep disorder.” He said though there are many reasons that can lead to sleep apnea like alcohol, smoking and use of sedatives, in some people it is due to the structure of their throat and the upper part of their body. Snoring, the doctor said, is just an indication of the condition. According to J.P.S. Sawhney, chairman of the cardiology department at Sir Gangaram Hospital, sleep apnea as a disease is grossly untreated. He said its correlation with cardiac disease has not been understood by the public as yet. However, the doctors said that the condition is easily treatable. Surgical intervention or a machine called C-Pap which ensures trouble-free breathing during the night, can easily help patients. The C-Pap, one of the most common treatments, derives its name from the application of “continuous positive airway pressure” (or forcing air) through a patient’s nose to prevent limp throat muscles from closing off the airway. The price of the machines, which have several variants, range between Rs. 35,000 and Rs. 90,000. Indian Hindu widows play with colored water for the first time as part of Holi celebrations organized by a non-governmental organization Sulabh at the Meera Sahbhagini Ashram in Vrindavan, India on March 14. The widows, many of whom at times have lived desperate lives in the streets of the temple town, celebrated the festival at the century old ashram. After their husband's deaths the women have been banished by their families, for supposedly bringing bad luck, to the town where devotees believe Lord Krishna was born. (AP Photo )

New Delhi, March 14 (PTi): Terming Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal’s comments on media as irresponsible, the Broadcast Editors’ Association on Friday said such “vague and sweeping” allegations were aimed at diluting the credibility of media which is discharging its responsibility in a fair and objective manner. Meanwhile, the Editors Guild of India too condemned the “repeated attacks” on the media by Kejriwal and said it reflected “an intolerant

mindset” that resented any critical scrutiny. The BEA said any aggrieved person should approach the self regulatory institutions in media with specific complaints and evidence. “BEA condemns Arvind Kejriwal’s irresponsible statement on media. BEA believes that electronic media is discharging its responsibility in a fair and objective manner,” a statement released here said. The Association said that it was wrong to say that TV channels are pursu-

ing a biased agenda in favour of any person or party. BEA believes that such attempts are a conspiracy to dilute the credibility of media, it added. “We have strong faith in the self regulatory institutions that electronic media has developed and would request any aggrieved person to approach them with specific complaints and evidence. Vague and sweeping allegations is a sign of weakness,” the statement released in the name of BEA President

Shazi Zaman and General Secretary N K Singh said. “The Guild condemns in the strongest terms the repeated attacks on the media by the Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal, that violate the norms of decent democratic debate,” a statement by N Ravi, the President of the Editors Guild of India, said here. His wholesale accusation against the media as being bought by a particular party and candidate and his threat, even if it be an empty one, to send media persons to

New Delhi, March 14 (PTi): The Supreme Court on Friday sought response from Centre and Election Commission on a PIL seeking to declare as “null and void” the nomination papers of any candidate contesting election from more than one constituency. A bench headed by Chief Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice N.V. Ramana issued notices to the Centre and the EC on the petition which also sought direction to candidates not to

file nomination papers and contest election from more than one constituency for the same legislative body. “Issue a direction that Section 70 of the Representation of Peoples Act is ultra vires to the Constitution of India. “Issue a direction to the Election Commission to ask candidate to file affidavit to the effect that they are not contesting from any other constituency failing which their nomination may be rejected,” the petition, filed

by advocate H.K. Naik, said. According to Section 70 of the Representation of Peoples Act, “If a person is elected to more than one seat in either House of Parliament or in the House or either House of the Legislature of a State, then, unless within the prescribed time he resigns all but one of the seats [by writing under his hand addressed to the Speaker or Chairman, as the case may be, or to such other authority or officer as

may be prescribed], all the seats shall become vacant”. The petition also said that the nomination of the candidate be declared null and void if he files papers from more than one constituency simultaneously. “Law speaks about the qualification of the candidate to contest but never speaks about whether a qualified candidate may file nomination for more than one constituency simultaneously,” it said.

prison after an inquiry reflect “an intolerant mindset that resents any critical scrutiny”, the statement added. It is the democratic right of the free media to raise any issue and to subject any public person or party to scrutiny, and it is ridiculous to label the criticism of a party or of a political leader as “paid news”, the Guild said. “One hopes the intolerance that is reflected in Arvind Kejriwal’s recent attacks on the media does not represent the new style

of politics promised by the Aam Aadmi Party and its leaders,” the statement said. Earlier triggering a fresh controversy, Kejriwal had in a video aired by a news-channel alleged that the whole media is “sold” and “heavy amounts” have been paid to promote BJP’s prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi. He later denied having made the accusations against the media after his remarks came under attack from various quarters.

Court denies bail to Tarun Tejpal

PaNaji, March 14 (iaNS): Former Tehelka editor-inchief Tarun Tejpal’s bail plea in a case of sexual assault was rejected by the Bombay High Court bench here Friday. Rejecting Tejpal’s bail plea, Justice Utkarsh Bakre said there was likelihood of the 50-year-old journalist fleeing from justice and tampering with the witnesses. “There is evidence on record, in this regard of the applicant talking on mobile to somebody from Gurgaon and New Delhi. A mobile has been attached from the possession of the applicant,” Bakre said in his order. The possession of a mobile phone in prison premises, in violation of prison rules, made it “difficult to believe that the applicant would obey the conditions if he is released on bail by putting any conditions on him”, the judge noted. The judge also brought on record Tejpal’s daughter’s (not named in the order) meeting with the victim’s mother in New Delhi, which the prosecution has called an attempt to influence the victim. “Fact remains that the applicant has not distanced himself from the daughter and further

there is prima facie evidence to show that the applicant himself has been sending messages to the friends of the father of the victim,” the order reads. Making light of one of Tejpal’s pleas to grant him bail so that he could attend to his ailing mother, Bakre said: “There is no dispute that there are other family members to look after the mother.” “Looking to the seriousness of the offence, the likelihood of the applicant fleeing from justice and tampering with the witnesses, I am not inclined to consider the request of the applicant for bail on this ground,” the judge said. Tejpal has already spent over three months in police and judicial custody since his arrest Nov 30, after a nationwide police hunt. A junior woman colleague accused Tejpal of rape during ThinkFest, a high profile conference organised by the Tehelka founder in Goa which was attended by Hollywood star Robert de Niro. The victim claimed that she was sexually assaulted twice Nov 7 and 8. Tejpal is presently lodged in the Sada sub jail located in Vasco, 35 km from here.

Odisha nun’s gang rape

BhuBaNeSwar, March 14 (iaNS): A court in Odisha Friday sentenced the main accused in the 2008 gang rape of a catholic nun to 11 years in prison and two others to 26 months, a lawyer said. District and Sessions Judge Gyanaranjan Purohit at Cuttack, 26 km from here, held Mitu Patnaik, Gajendra Digal and Saroj Badhai guilty, the nun’s counsel Manas Ranjan Singh told IANS. The judge sentenced Patnaik, the prime accused, to 11 years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs.10,000 on him. In default, he will have to spend two more years in jail, Singh said. The court also sentenced the other two accused, Gajendra Digal and Saroj Badhai, to 26 months in jail for outraging the modesty of the victim, he said. The 29-year-old nun was attacked by a mob and raped in Nuagaon village of the Kandhamal district Aug 24, 2008, when communal violence in the region was at its peak. The district, about 200 km from here, witnessed widespread violence after the murder of Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four of his aides at his ashram. Police had blamed Maoists for the killings. At least 38 people were killed in the state and thousands of Christians were forced to flee their homes. The gang-rape sparked an international outcry and drew strong condemnation. The Crime Branch of the state police, which probed the case, arrested about two dozen people and filed four chargesheets. In the first phase, the court tried nine accused and completed its hearing March 4 and kept its verdict reserved. The court Fridayacquittedthe remaining six duetolack ofevidence.President of the Global Council of Indian Christians Sajan K. George termed it a “light verdict” and said he was shocked that six of the accused were acquitted by the court. “The incident had shaken up the conscience of the entire nation. The whole incident was published in almost all the newspapers in the country with very clear details,” he said in a statement. “It is a case of blatant failure on part of the state agencies which have failed to extend much-needed institutional support to victims and also their subjugation to the non-state actors,” he said.

‘India emerging as liver transplant hub’

NoiDa, March 14 (iaNS): India is emerging as a global hub for liver transplant with expanded medical facilities, an expert said here Friday. “Around 5060 percent of live transplant patients are from foreign countries,” said Vivek Vij, director, Liver Transplant Programme in Fortis Hospital here. “The reason India has emerged as a hub for liver transplant is because of the poor medical facilities in countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Cambodia and other African nations,” he added. Vij was speaking on the occasion of Fortis Hospital becoming the first hospital in Uttar Pradesh to perform 100 liver transplants. “Since the inception of the hospital in 2012, Fortis Noida has recorded a 100 percent donor and 97 percent recipient survival rate, surpassing the international standards for safety and establishing the hospital as a coveted centre for liver transplant.” He said the hospital has also initiated a lot of campaigns and drives to raise awareness about liver-related diseases.

From tea-stalls to drawing rooms, politics reigns supreme New Delhi, March 14 (iaNS): Be it a Metro train or a tea stall, drawing rooms to restaurants, market gossip to office banter, politics has undoubtedly become the main topic of social conversation in a politically conscious India. With hardly a month to go for the Lok Sabha elections to begin, poll fever has gripped the people with even dinner table and drawing room talk zeroing in on who will be India’s next prime minister in what is widely expected to be one of the most closely-contested and unpredictable polls in independent India’s history. With the Lok Sabha elec-

tions starting April 7, and the polls in the national capital on April 10, animated discussions and, on many occasions, heated arguments can be heard in buses, Metro trains, tea stalls and even drawing rooms as people argue over their political heroes, present their analyses and forcefully make their predictions. As the media, especially television channels, has raised the political pitch in the country, it does not look odd when even a stranger asks you: “Who will you vote for, Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi or Arvind Kejriwal?” Sixty-five-year-old Usha

Kaushal said even in kitty parties, the talk usually veers to either the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi or Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi or the AAP leader. “It has never happened before that women, who usually love gossiping or talking about their daughters-in-law or food, are now discussing the future of the country. In fact, the other day, a new person had joined our party. Instead of talking about herself, she was busy airing her political views. Politics has certainly become an ice-breaker between strangers,” Kaushal,

a grandmother of two, told IANS. She said the talk in kitty parties is increasingly on politics and the coming elections. Sachin Sharma, who works for an NGO, said he mostly travels by the Metro, and on many occasions in buses, and is surprised when random strangers start talking about politics. “I will say the poll fever has touched the common man too. Imagine, it is like a discussion on the weather. I am surprised when people air their political views so openly. In a way it is good that more and more people want to be part of the elec-

tion process. It speaks well of India as the world’s largest democracy,” Sharma added. For first-time voter Sanjana Tripathi, it will be an exciting prospect to cast her ballot. This time, over 23 million voters are aged between 18 and 19 years. “These days, especially during dinner time, we watch news channels. Earlier, we used to watch our favourite soap operas. In our house, we have different political affiliations. My father votes for BJP and my mother for the Congress. But I think I will vote for Kejriwal. I am for change,” said Tripathi, who added that most of

her friends are planning to vote for AAP. She said she is also trying to convince her mother to vote for AAP. “My mother had recently held a kitty party at our house. I seized that opportunity to convince some of her friends to vote for AAP. At one point, I had a heated discussion with my mother. But politics is like that..But I am sure I was able to persuade some her friends to vote for AAP,” Tripathi told IANS. Sanjay, a tea-stall owner at Palam in southwest Delhi, said with Modi’s campaign called ‘chai pai charcha’ or discussion over tea, the humble outlets have be-

come a hotspot to discuss politics. “A tea-stall is one place where politics is one discussion that always happen. But it has become the symbol with Modi’s campaign. A teastall is also a place where one can judge the mood of the people. I can say at least in Delhi, many people will vote for AAP. I can’t say who will become India’s prime minister. But I am told that there is a Modi wave. I don’t know.. there could be. At least that is what the television channels are saying,” Sanjay contended. Architect Sandeep Rao said he lives in a joint family and his house these days

matches the mood of the nation. “We eat, sleep and drink politics these days. Even during dinner time, we discuss politics. Discussions help in forming views and decisions. We were earlier supporting a particular political party, but now we are supporting a party that has just entered the political arena.” Added his elder brother Santosh, an engineer: “Elections have always been interesting. But this time round for the first time, a new party is being talked about. For now, nothing can be said who will form the government. But the suspense is thrilling and nailbiting.”

Search for lost jet expands amid signs it flew on KUA L A LU M P U R , MARch 14 (AP): The international search for the missing Malaysian jetliner expanded further into the Indian Ocean on Friday amid signs the aircraft may have flown on for hours after its last contact with air-traffic control nearly a week ago. A U.S. official told The Associated Press that the Malaysia Airlines plane sent signals to a satellite for four hours after the aircraft went missing early last Saturday, raising the possibility the jet carrying 239 people could have flown far from the current search areas. It also increased speculation that whatever happened to the plane was a deliberate act. Malaysia’s Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said the search was expanding further afield, not because of any new information about the plane’s flight, but because the aircraft has not yet been found. Malaysian officials declined to discuss when —or even whether — they had information about signals to satellites, and that they would release details only when verified. Hishammuddin said Malaysian investigators have worked with U.S. colleagues in Kuala Lumpur since Sunday. “I hope within a couple of days to have something conclusive,” he told a press conference. If the plane had disintegrated during flight or had suffered some other catastrophic failure, all signals — the pings to the satellite, the data messages and the transponder — would be expected to stop at the same time. Experts say a

pilot or passengers with technical expertise may have switched off the transponder in the hope of flying undetected. No theory, however, has been ruled out in one of aviation history’s most puzzling mysteries. The Beijing-bound Boeing 777-200 last communicated with air traffic base stations east of Malaysia in the South China Sea, which for several days has the main focus of the search. Planes and ships also have been searching the Strait of Malacca west of Malaysia because of a blip on military radar suggested the plane might have turned in that direction after the last confirmed contact. If the plane flew another four hours, it could be much farther away. Indian ships and planes have been searching northwest of Malaysia in the eastern Andaman Sea, and on Friday expanded their search to areas west of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands chain Friday, said V.S.R. Murty, an Indian Coast Guard inspector-general. The White House said the U.S. may be drawn into a new phase of the search in the vast Indian Ocean but did not offer details. The U.S. Navy 7th Fleet said it was moving one of its ships, the USS Kidd, into the Strait of Malacca. Hishamuddin said the search also would be expanded to more remote parts of the South China Sea as well. However, Vietnam, which has been heavily involved in the search from the start, downgraded its hunt in the South China Sea to regular from emergency on Friday by reducing the

Japan PM won’t revise 1993 apology on “comfort women”

TOKYO, MARch 14 (ReUTeRs): Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Friday that his government would not revise a landmark 1993 apology to women, many Korean, forced to serve in wartime military brothels, as Washington presses for better ties between its two Asian allies. Japan’s ties with South Korea are frayed by a territorial row and the legacy of its 1910-1945 colonisation of the Korean peninsula, including the issue of compensation and an apology to women, known euphemistically in Japan as “comfort women”, forced to serve in military brothels before and during World War Two. South Korea and China were outraged by signs that Abe’s government might water down the apology, issued by then-chief cabinet secretary Yohei Kono, which recognised the involvement of Japanese authorities in coercing the women to work in the military brothels - a point many conservative Japanese dispute. Nationalist politicians have been urging the government to revise the apology, arguing there is no evidence of large-scale coercion by government authorities or the military. “With regard to the ‘comfort women’ issue, I am deeply pained to think of the comfort women who experienced immeasurable pain and suffering, a feeling I share equally with my predecessors,” Abe told a parliamentary panel. “The Kono Statement addresses this issue ... and, as my Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga stated in news conferences, the Abe Cabinet has no intention to review it.” Abe also said his government adhered to the positions stated by past governments on history, including the 1995 apology for suffering caused by the war given by then-premier Tomiichi Murayama. “We must be humble regarding history,” he said. “Issues regarding history should not be politicised or made diplomatic issues. I think that research on history should be left in the hands of intellectuals and experts.” Japan’s already strained ties with both South Korea and China worsened further after Abe paid his respects in December at Yasukuni Shrine, where wartime leaders convicted by an Allied tribunal as war criminals are honoured along with war dead. Under pressure to improve ties with Seoul ahead of an April visit by U.S. President Barack Obama, Tokyo has been trying to arrange a summit between Abe, South Korean President Park Geun-hye and Obama on the sidelines of a global nuclear-security summit in the Hague, Netherlands, on March 24-25. A South Korean government official said earlier this week, however, that no progress was likely unless Japan made further efforts to resolve frictions stemming from Japan’s wartime past. And on Thursday, South Korean Foreign Ministry Spokesman Cho Tai-young told a news briefing: “We have no reason to refuse dialogue with Japan if Japan shows that it has changed and creates the right conditions that would make constructive dialogue possible.” Japan has been sending mixed messages on the Kono Statement, announcing that it would review the circumstances behind the apology, but adding that it would not rescind the statement. Abe himself sparked controversy during his first 2006-2007 term by saying there was no proof Japan’s military had kidnapped women for the brothels. Japan says the matter of compensation for ‘comfort women’ was settled under a 1965 treaty establishing diplomatic ties. In 1995, Japan set up a fund to make payments to the women from private contributions, but South Korea says that was not official and therefore, insufficient.

frequency of aircraft flights and cruises by ships involved, said Lt. Gen. Vo Van Tuan, deputy chief of staff of Vietnamese People’s Army. The U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to discuss the situation by name, said the plane wasn’t transmitting data to the satellite but was sending a signal to establish contact. Boeing offers a satellite service that can receive a stream of data during flight on how the aircraft is functioning and relay the information to the plane’s home base. The idea is to provide information before the plane lands on whether maintenance work or repairs are needed. Malaysia Airlines didn’t subscribe to that service, but the plane still had the capability to connect with the satellite and was automatically sending pings, the official said. Boeing has not commented. “It’s like when your cellphone is off but it still sends out a little ‘I’m here’ message to the cellphone network,” the official said. “That’s how sometimes they can triangulate your position even though you’re not calling because the phone every so often sends out a little bleep. That’s sort of what this thing was doing.” Messages involving a different, more rudimentary data service also were received from the airliner for a short time after the plane’s transponder — a device used to identify the plane to radar — went silent, the U.S. official said. Hishammuddin said Malaysia was asking for radar data from India and other neighbor-

MH370 Mystery: Focus on foul play

Cabin crews of Vietnam Air Force are seen onboard a flying AN-26 Soviet made aircraft during a search operation for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 plane over the southern sea between Vietnam and Malaysia on March 14. ing countries to see if they can trace it flying northwest. There was no word Friday that any other country had such details on the plane, and they may not exist. In Thailand, secondary surveillance radar, which requires a signal from aircraft, runs 24 hours a day, but primary surveillance radar, which requires no signal at all, ordinarily shuts down at night at some locations, said a Royal Thai Air Force officer who asked not to be named because he is not authorized to talk to the media on the issue. Air Marshal Vinod Patni, a retired Indian air force officer and a defense expert, said radar facilities in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands area don’t work around the clock, either. “These are generally switched on and off as and when required. A radar may be kept on for 24 hours on

certain days. I won’t say that the Indian radars are highly sophisticated in the region,” he said. Patni also said there are gaps in the coverage areas, including within the area being searched for the missing plane. He couldn’t give an exact location for specific gaps, but said pilots are well aware of them. The possibility that the plane flew long after its last confirmed contact opens the possibility that one of the pilots, or someone with flying experience, wanted to hijack the plane for some later purpose, kidnap the passengers or commit suicide by plunging the aircraft into the sea. Mike Glynn, a committee member of the Australian and International Pilots Association, said he considers pilot suicide to be the most likely explanation for the disappearance, as was

suspected in a SilkAir crash during a flight from Singapore to Jakarta in 1997 and an EgyptAir flight from Los Angeles to Cairo in 1999. “A pilot rather than a hijacker is more likely to be able to switch off the communications equipment,” Glynn said. “The last thing that I, as a pilot, want is suspicion to fall on the crew, but it’s happened twice before.” Glynn said a pilot may have sought to fly the plane into the Indian Ocean to reduce the chances of recovering data recorders, and to conceal the cause of the disaster. Experts said that if the plane crashed into the ocean, some debris should be floating even if most of the jet is submerged. Past experience shows that finding the wreckage can take weeks or even longer, especially if the location of the plane is in doubt.

UN criticized over peacekeeping invite to Myanmar

wAshingTOn, MARch 14 (AP): Human Rights Watch criticized the United Nations Thursday for raising the possibility of Myanmar contributing U.N. peacekeepers, describing the nation’s military as among the most abusive in the world. The New York-based group voiced its concerns in a letter to U.N. SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon. It said that despite the democratic opening in the country also known as Burma, its military remains unreformed and continues to use child soldiers. Vijay Nambiar, Ban’s special adviser on Myanmar, raised the issue when he met Myanmar commander-inchief Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing in late January in the nation’s capital Naypyitaw. “The Burmese military’s poor record on rights and civilian protection is profoundly at odds with the standards that U.N. peacekeepers are expected to defend around the world,”

said Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch. “Any move by the U.N. to recruit Burmese forces risks grave damage to the UN’s reputation.” U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters Thursday that the Nambiar’s talks with the Myanmar military chief were part of broader discussions Nambiar has been having with Myanmar on its reintegration into the international community. He said like any U.N. member state, Myanmar was invited to discuss its interest with the U.N. peacekeeping department which would consider the request. U.N. forces are accountable to the highest standards in training and conduct, and thorough assessments are carried out prior to the acceptance of any uniformed personnel, he said. Myanmar’s diplomatic mission at the U.N. did not respond to a request for comment on whether it was interested in contributing peacekeepers .

A U.N report last May cited Myanmar on its list of countries that recruit children to its government forces, although it said Myanmar had made progress. Human Rights Watch said Thursday that while the government has signed an action plan with the U.N. and committed to releasing all child soldiers by the end of 2013. Nick Birnback, U.N. peacekeeping spokesman, said that when considering whether to deploy peacekeepers from a member state, the U.N. carefully reviews that nation’s record on recruiting child soldiers and whether it’s taking serious measures to stop it, although there’s no formal policy in the U.N. on barring a nation that it has cited for it. Several Western nations, including the U.S., have begun engaging Myanmar’s military after years of isolation, while still blocking arms exports and voicing concerns over its lingering ties with North Korea. Those nations

want to encourage Myanmar’s military to embrace reform and submit to civilian control. But in the letter to Ban, Human Rights Watch also cautioned against inviting Myanmar military officials to attend U.N. training or orientation sessions, saying it would signal the U.N. is ready to welcome Myanmar forces under the flag of the world body. In January, a rights group accused Myanmar’s military of continuing to use rape as weapon of war, despite the democratic reforms that began three years ago. The report from the Women’s League of Burma documented more than 100 rapes, almost all in townships plagued by stubborn ethnic insurgencies. In February, the U.N. rights rapporteur for Myanmar, Tomas Quintana, said he raised with Myanmar authorities allegations of rape, arbitrary detention and torture following military clashes in Kachin State and northern Shan State.

KUALA LUMPUR, MARch 14 (Re UTeRs): An investigation into the disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines jetliner is focusing more on a suspicion of foul play, as evidence suggests it was diverted hundreds of miles off course, sources familiar with the Malaysian probe said. In a far more detailed description of military radar plotting than has been publicly revealed, two sources told Reuters an unidentified aircraft that investigators suspect was missing Flight MH370 appeared to be following a commonly used navigational route when it was last spotted early on Saturday, northwest of Malaysia. That course - headed into the Andaman Sea and towards the Bay of Bengal in the Indian Ocean could only have been set deliberately, either by flying the Boeing 777-200ER jet manually or by programming the auto-pilot. A third investigative source said inquiries were focusing more on the theory that someone who knew how to fly a plane deliberately diverted the flight hundreds of miles off its scheduled course from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. “What we can say is we are looking at sabotage, with hijack still on the cards,”

said the source, a senior Malaysian police official. One of the most baffling mysteries in the history of modern aviation remains unsolved after nearly a week. The latest radar evidence is consistent with the expansion of the search for the aircraft to the west of Malaysia. There has been no trace of the plane nor any sign of wreckage as the navies and military aircraft of more than a dozen countries scour the seas across Southeast Asia. Malaysian Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said he could not confirm the last heading of the plane or if investigators were focusing on sabotage. “A normal investigation becomes narrower with time ... as new information focuses the search, but this is not a normal investigation,” he told a news conference. “In this case, the information has forced us to look further and further afield.” Investigators were still looking at “four or five” possibilities, including a diversion that was intentional or under duress, or an explosion, he said. Police would search the pilot’s home if necessary and were still investigating all 239 passengers and crew on the plane, he added.

Maths can be made easier with gestures

new YORK, MARch 14 (iAns): Children who use their hands to gesture during a math lesson gain a deep understanding of the problems they are taught, research shows. Previous research has found that gestures can help children learn. The study was designed to answer whether abstract gesture is a more effective teaching tool than concrete action. “We found that acting gave children a relatively shallow understanding of a novel math concept, whereas gesturing led to deeper and more flexible learning,” explained lead author Miriam A. Novack. The researchers taught third-grade children a strategy for solving one type of mathematical equivalence problem. They then tested the students on similar mathematical equivalence problems to determine how well they understood the underlying principle. The researchers randomly assigned 90 children to conditions in which

they learned using different kinds of physical interaction with the material. In one group, children picked up magnetic number tiles and put them in the proper place in the formula. Another group mimed that action without actually touching the tiles, and a third group was taught to use abstract gestures with their hands to solve the equations. Children in all three groups learned the problems they had been taught during the lesson. But only children who gestured during the lesson were successful on the generalisation problems. “Abstract gesture was most effective in encouraging learners to generalise the knowledge they had gained during instruction, action least effective, and concrete gesture somewhere in between,” said senior author and psychology professor Susan Goldin-Meadow. The study was published in the journal Psychological Science.

Xi Jinping: Man of the people, or is he a careful image builder?

Beijing, MARch 14 (AFP): Kicking balls, eating steamed buns and carrying his own umbrella, Xi Jinping is at the apex of Chinese power but has been busy building his “ordinary guy” credentials during his first year in charge. Xi assumed control with an impeccable pedigree as the son of a revolutionary hero, a communist “princeling” fulfilling a Party destiny to lead the world’s most populous country. He sought to build an image as a foreign

policy hardliner among neighbouring countries, a strong-minded corruption fighter in his own party, and a driver of lofty aspirations centred on what he calls the “Chinese dream” with political commentators. But among ordinary Chinese on the country’s hugely popular -- but censored -- Internet chatrooms, the barrel-chested leader is known simply as “Xi Dada” or “Big Xi”. It is an affectionate, almost chummy moniker which appears to suggest

the gap between power and the people is closing. Following on as head of state from the stiff, almost robotic Hu Jintao, Xi needed only to inject a small dose of charisma into his role to project a radically different persona. But the campaign to promote as a people’s president the man whose pop star wife, Peng Liyuan, has general’s rank and whose daughter, Xi Mingze, studied at Harvard under a pseudonym, has gone much further. Xi has voiced

his passion for football -the most watched sport in China -- and Wang Wen, president of the official supporter’s group of Chinese Super League team Beijing Guoan said: “We can tell from his views on football that he’s a real fan.” “We think he’s a man of the people,” he told AFP. “He shows an attitude towards football which is unprecedented.” Xi showed off his kicking skills with a Gaelic football at Dublin’s Croke Park in 2012 during a state visit to Ireland. But ordinary supporters say that Beijing-born Xi has never attended a match at the Workers’ Stadium where Guoan play, despite living only a few miles away in Zhongnanhai, a closely guarded compound next to the Forbidden City.

Rolled up trouser legs He has occasionally ventured out to mix with the hoi polloi, dropping by the popular Qingfeng Steamed Stuffed Bun Shop in December, paying 21 yuan ($3.50) out of his own pocket for an ordinary meal of pork-andonion buns, green vegetables and fried liver.

At the time many mocked the visit, with one online post saying: “Ask him how much it costs for a pound of steamed buns. Do you think he knows?” But when AFP visited this week the focus of attention in the restaurant was the stool where Xi sat. Yu Ming, 52, guarded the spot, as she waiting for her husband while he queued with about 30 people, as Xi patiently did. “He came here because he wants to mix with ordinary people,” Yu said. “There is no way it was a publicity stunt,” she added, as her fellow customers, who mainly appeared to be manual or domestic workers meeting their wives and husbands after work, listened in. In 2012 Xi’s relatives were reported by US news agency Bloomberg to have amassed hundreds of millions of dollars in assets. The president made another carefully-orchestrated appearance last month, as pollution readings in the routinely smog-hit city hit extreme levels, when he decided to take a stroll -- without a facemask, but accompanied by television cameras -- in Nanluoguxiang, a popular shopping and cafe district.

“Breathing the same air, sharing the same fate,” said a widely shared online post, with environmental problems angering many ordinary Chinese. Some Internet users surmised that Xi was proving his vigour, a modern-day echo of Chairman Mao swimming in the Yangtze almost 50 years ago, another less-than-impromptu act which was captured by nearby, carefully positioned cameras. But Liang Zhongyu, an education student from the northern province of Heilongjiang visiting the area, insisted it was “not to deliberately build an image”. “He came here to look at the people, to see if we are well or not,” she said. Internet users have also shared photos of Xi standing with his trouser legs rolled up, holding his own umbrella as he surveys a river port during heavy rain. Li Yu, a 20-yearold law student, took pictures of a courtyard in an alley off Nanluoguxiang where Xi asked residents about their living conditions during his visit. “There is no difference between Xi and the people,” she said, giggling. “Well... none in terms of us all being Chinese.”

Fiorentina hold Juve; Benfica sink Spurs

LONDON, March 14 (reuters): Mario Gomez dusted off his shooting boots to put Fiorentina in the driving seat with a 1-1 Europa League draw at Juventus while Benfica were too good for Tottenham Hotspur, winning their last-16 first leg 3-1 away on Thursday. Germany striker Gomez had not scored since returning in February after five months out with a knee injury but tilted the tie in his team's favour with a 79thminute strike while Real Betis tore up the form book to win 2-0 at local rivals Sevilla. Twice winners Porto beat Napoli 1-0 thanks to Jackson Martinez's superb finish and Helton's agile goalkeeping. Valencia played for more than an hour with 10 men but still beat Ludogorets 3-0 in Bulgaria. The goals, however, dried up for the previous round's big scorers Salzburg who were held to a 0-0 draw at Basel, ending a run of 14 successive wins in all competitions. Juventus's clash with Fiorentina was a replay of the 1990 UEFA Cup final and came four days after the two sides met in Serie A. Juventus, three places

and 27 points clear of their domestic rivals, won 1-0 on Sunday and took the lead after three minutes when the ball fell kindly at the feet of Arturo Vidal and he dispatched it powerfully into the net from 10 metres. Yet their failure to kill off the tie gave hope to Fiorentina who grew in confidence and eventually punished their hosts late on. Gomez, who tore ligaments in his right knee in September, came off the bench in the 67th minute and made a decisive impact, controlling a lofted pass before shooting through the legs of Juventus keeper Gianluigi Buffon. Tottenham were hosting Benfica for the first time since they met in the European Cup semi-final in 1962. Benfica, who are seven points clear at the top of the Portuguese championship, won that tie and were thoroughly on top when they went ahead after 30 minutes. Rodrigo raced onto a terrific throughball from Ruben Amorim and picked his spot, curling his finish with his in-step into the far corner. Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood told his

squad they were playing for their futures after their 4-0 Premier League defeat to Chelsea at the weekend but the present looked bleak when Luisao headed home

unmarked after 58 minutes. Christian Eriksen curled in a free kick to reduce the deficit but Luisao struck again, pouncing on a rebound to shoot into the roof

of the net from close range. Tottenham defender Younes Kaboul refused to throw in the towel however. "Everything is possible in football," he told ITV. "We

will go there to win and see what happens." SEVILLE DERBY The first Seville derby in Europe did not go ac-

cording to the script as Sevilla, seventh in La Liga, suffered a shock home reverse against their struggling rivals who are bottom of the domestic table. Betis took the lead when Baptistao powered a header into the roof of the net after 15 minutes and Salvador Sevilla put the result beyond doubt in the 77th minute when he drove the ball into the far corner of the net. Porto's preparations for their tie against Napoli were undermined when they parted company with coach Paulo Fonseca last Wednesday, but they still looked a well-drilled unit against Rafa Benitez's tactically-wily Italian side. The Portuguese team survived an early secondhalf onslaught from Napoli thanks to the lithe reflexes of keeper Helton, who kept out a drilled shot on the turn from Gonzalo Higuain and blocked Raul Albiol's header from close range. Minutes later they went ahead when Martinez showed a fine scorer's instinct to drop off his marker at the far post and rifle a volley into the net from 15 metres. Bulgarians Ludogorets fell behind against

a Valencia team unbeaten since matchday one of the group stage when Antonio Barragan fired a low drive into the bottom corner after five minutes. The Spanish side were reduced to 10 men 19 minutes later, however, when Seydou Keita was dismissed for bringing down Roman Bezjak, who spared the visitors a double punishment by fluffing the resulting penalty. Valencia made the most of the let-off when Fede Cartabia volleyed the ball low into the bottom corner after 33 minutes and Philippe Senderos grabbed his first goal for the club, heading home unmarked in the second half. Juninho Quixada was sent off for Ludogorets with 10 minutes remaining for kicking out. Salzburg were fresh from a 6-1 aggregate success over Ajax Amsterdam in the last 32 but found Basel a tougher nut to crack in Switzerland, with the Austrian side failing to score for the first time this season. Gueida Fofana scored twice as Olympique Lyon comfortably beat Viktoria Plzen 4-1 and AZ Alkmaar won 1-0 at home to Anzhi Makhachkala.

WIndies fall six runs short against ‘Red Bull two months behind rivals’ England in exciting final match BrIDgetOwN, March 14 (IaNs): West Indies failed in their bid to complete a clean sweep, as England held their nerve to record a consolation victory, in an exciting finale to their three-match Twenty20 International series here. Set a challenging but achievable 166 to win, West Indies were propelled by Lendl Simmons who top scored with 69 and wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin who got 33, as they finished six runs short of their target at Kensington Oval, reports CMC. They required 17 from a nerve-jangling last over but despite a six from West Indies captain Darren Sammy (15 not out), the hosts just failed to get over the line, with six needed from the last delivery. Ironically, Barbados-born seamer Christopher Jordan proved to be England’s hero, snatching three for 39 from his four overs, including the crucial wicket of Ramdin in the penultimate over. The spell followed up his explosive unbeaten 27 as England rallied 165 for six after winning the toss and opting to bat first in great conditions. Opener Michael Lumb smashed 63 and partner Alex Hales chipped in with 38, in a 98-run stand off

65 balls, but England fell away badly at the end as the left-arm Jamaican seam duo of Krishmar Santokie (2-27) and debutant Sheldon Cottrell (2-37) picked up two wickets apiece. Jordan then belted four sixes off seamer Dwayne Bravo’s last over which cost 26 runs, to rally England at the death. West Indies had the worst possible start when Dwayne Smith chopped on to the first ball of the innings from pacer Jade Dernbach and Johnson Charles followed for four in the next over, when he got a leading edge back to Jordan. Marlon Samuels looked in superb form, stroking three fours off Dernbach’s second over, the third of the innings, in scoring 15 off 13 balls. His fireworks were shortlived, however, as he dragged on to Jordan, leaving the Windies precariously perched at 28 for three in the fifth over. Simmons combined with Dwayne Bravo (16) to repair the innings with a 38-run, fourth wicket stand before the latter became the first of Ravi Bopara’s two wickets. Andre Russell lasted two balls before slogging Bopara to cover without scoring at 67 for five but Simmons and Ramdin sensibly went about their business, adding 73 for the sixth wicket.

Bayern Munich president sentenced to prison

Bayern Munich (AP File Photo)

MuNIch, March 14 (aP): Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness was found guilty and sentenced to 3½ years in prison on Thursday for evading millions of euros (dollars) in tax through an undeclared Swiss bank account. The 62-year-old Hoeness, one of the most powerful figures in German football, was initially charged with dodging 3.5 million euros ($4.85 million) in taxes through the Swiss account. But when his trial opened on Monday he admitted to avoiding 15 million euros more. Then it came out through an examination of documents he provided to investigators shortly before the trial that he owed 27.2 million euros in total — a number Hoeness did not dispute. Hoeness faced up to 10 years in prison, and the sentence came between the 5½ years suggested by the prosecution and the defense's plea for probation, based on the fact that he turned himself in for tax evasion and provided details to the court, the dpa news agency reported. Following the verdict, defense attorney Hanns Feigen said he would appeal the decision to see

how a higher court would value Hoeness' "not ideal" confession. He added he was convinced the appeals court would come to a "better result" than the Munich state court did. Hoeness will remain free on bail pending the outcome of the appeal. German authorities have been cracking down on tax evaders in recent years, and have recovered hundreds of millions of euros. Their widely publicized purchase of leaked account information on thousands of investors, as well as highprofile cases such as that against Hoeness and former Deutsche Post AG CEO Klaus Zumwinkel, has led to thousands of people turning themselves in. Hoeness, who also is part owner of a Nuremberg sausage factory, reported himself to the tax authorities last April — around the same time that German media were investigating reports of high-profile tax evaders. News of the case against the national icon prompted even Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman to weigh in and say the country's leader was disap-

pointed in him. As a player, Hoeness was a Bayern star who won the 1972 European Championship and the 1974 World Cup with West Germany and three straight European Cups — the predecessor of the Champions League — before retiring in 1979 with chronic knee problems. He became the Bundesliga's youngest coach when he was 27. Bayern has been enjoying unprecedented success under Hoeness' presidency. The club stood by him during the investigation, and its supervisory board was expected to meet following the verdict to see what steps to take next. Bayern officials met to discuss the verdict, but a reaction from the club would not be published before Friday, dpa reported. The German football association said in a statement it was surprised by the "dimension of the entire incident." While it praised Hoeness' achievements for German football, the body said "the legal evaluation of such a case can only be done by the courts and there the law applies to Uli Hoeness as it applies to everyone." In three decades as manager and president of Bayern, Hoeness conducted a prudent financial policy that left the club not only without debts but with a fat bank account. Hoeness refused to spend lavishly on foreign superstars but brought in the best of German talent. In recent years, Bayern started spending more on players and the result was its first treble last season, when it won the Champions League, the Bundesliga and the German Cup.

MeLBOurNe, March 14 (reuters): Red Bull's abysmal winter testing has left them badly lagging behind their Formula One rivals and they will need at least two months to get their cars performing at optimal level, according to double world champion Mika Hakkinen. Red Bull have admitted they are playing catch-up ahead of Sunday's seasonopening Australian Grand Prix, after struggling to come to grips with the new turbocharged hybrid engine during the pre-season tests. Finn Hakkinen, who won back-to-back titles in 199899 with McLaren, would not discount Sebastian Vettel's chances of winning a fifth consecutive championship for Red Bull but said the constructors' champions were up against it. "You saw in the testing they weren't able to do enough running," Hakkinen told Reuters in an interview on Friday. "They haven't really got a result to the level that they want. In Melbourne, I still think they are very far away. "They are a probably a couple of months behind the others, so it will take time for them to reach a performance they need." Mercedes have been

the bookmakers' favourites after gaining positive mileage and pace during testing, but suffered an embarrassing setback when Lewis Hamilton's car stopping five minutes into the first free practice session on Friday during his installation lap at Albert Park. Mercedes said the problem was related to an oil pressure alarm triggering the engine's shutdown but also conceded they had changed the car's

power unit in the leadup to the session. "It definitely was a shock because every lap is so important to collect data from the race track," 45-year-old Hakkinen said of the mishap, which saw Hamilton's car towed off the track and the driver make the long, lonely walk back to the paddock. "The regulations have changed so dramatically that the teams are having a massive challenge at the

moment. There are only a few teams who are really in a stable situation." Hakkinen, who appeared as a sponsor's ambassador for an anti-drink driving campaign on Friday, said it was too early to tell who would emerge front-runner after the opening round in Melbourne, but was intrigued how the new partnership of Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen would unfold at

Ferrari. Pundits have speculated the former world champions' rivalry could hurt their team's chances, with neither expected to be content to play second fiddle, but Hakkinen dismissed any idea of tension between the drivers spilling off-track. "They know the name of the game, so at the end of the day, the results will do all the talking," he said. "But wait a couple of months and we will know." One of the more exciting prospects to emerge this season was last year's strugglers Williams, Hakkinen said, with the former F1 giants showing signs of revival with new faces in the garage and a new driver in Brazilian Felipe Massa, who crossed over from Ferrari. "Williams definitely have been developing very positively," Hakkinen said. "I think now we start seeing the real results of the (new) team. "With Massa being part of the team, it's just strengthened the whole package. "It will be very interesting to see this week how they will do and I would say they are candidates for certain if they can produce a good result for this weekend."

Van Persie wants long-term ManU stay

MaNchester, March 14 (reuters): Robin van Persie is happy at Manchester United and would like to sign a new contract with the triple European champions, the Dutch international striker said on Thursday. Van Persie, top scorer in the Premier League last season, has struggled for goals this term while British media have reported of his discon-

tent at Old Trafford. He also recently complained about team mates getting in his way on the pitch. "What I need to address are the situations when people are taking it upon themselves to think for me, make assumptions or interpret things as if they are me," Van Persie told the club website (www.manutd. com). "Last time I checked my head was still attached to my body so I'm

the only one who knows exactly what I'm feeling. The truth is I'm very happy here. "I signed for four years and I'd be delighted to stay even longer, beyond the next two years I have left on my contract." Ahead of sixth-placed United's home league game with arch-rivals Liverpool on Sunday, Van Persie was full of praise for manager David Moyes who replaced Alex Fergu-

son when his fellow Scot retired at the end of last season. "There is no doubt I'm learning new things and progressing with David," he said. "The sessions we have on the training ground are fantastic and I'm learning a lot from them every day. "There is mutual respect between us and the work environment is actually good. He really wants things to work and I want the same."

Saina, Kashyap enter quarterfinals of Swiss Open

BaseL, March 14 (PtI): Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal set up a quarterfinal clash with world number three and top seed Chinese Yihan Wang, while Commonwealth Games bronze winner Parupalli Kashyap, too, entered the last eight in the $125,000 Swiss Grand Prix Gold tournament. The 23-year-old from Hyderabad registered an easy 21-7 21-13 win over Sashina Vignes Waran of France in the pre-quarterfinals that lasted 34 minutes in the women's singles competition. Kashyap, on the other hand, had to toil hard before prevailing over Malaysia's Beryno Jiann Tze Wong 21-23 21-9 21-14 in a 57-minute men's singles match at St. Jakobshalle. He will next take on Chinese Taipei's Tien Chen Chou in the quarterfinals. Saina, who had beaten Sashina in the same tournament in 2011 and 2013, didn't have any problem whatsoever and in five giant strides snatched the opening game, moving to 6-1 and then 13-2, before closing it with three straight points from 18-7. In the second game, the sixth seeded Indian was chased by the

World number 42 French from 3-8 to 11-12, but Saina reeled off six points at 15-13 to seal her place in the quarterfinals. The World number eight Indian has a poor record against Yihan, losing six times and her only victory was at the London Olympics when the Chinese had retired midway because of a knee injury. World number 25 Kashyap, meanwhile, had to dig deep in his reserves in the opening game but despite being 20-19, the Indian could not press home the slight advantage. In the second game, the 27-yearold showed his class as he didn't allow the Malaysian any chance to come near and led right from the start to make a roaring comeback in the contest. In the decider, Wong made early strides and led 10-5, but Kashyap clawed back at 11-11 and then zoomed ahead from 14-13 to 20-13 with a six-point burst. He then closed the door on the Malaysian. Kashyap's next opponent is world number 22 Tien but the Indian will take heart from the fact that he had beaten him in the Macau Open in 2011.

Diana leaked royal directory to UK tabloid

T

he late Princess Diana leaked a royal phone directory to the now defunct News of the World tabloid, its former royal editor told Britain’s phone-hacking trial on Thursday. Clive Goodman said that Diana sent him the contacts book by post in 1992, the year she separated from her husband Prince Charles, the heir to the throne. “She was going through a very, very difficult time,” Goodman told London’s Old Bailey court, where he is on trial for paying public officials for royal directories. “She told me she wanted me to see the scale of her husband’s staff and household, compared with others. “She felt she was being swamped by people close to his household. She was looking for an ally to take him on -- to show there were forces that would rage against him.” Goodman is accused of two counts of conspiring to commit misconduct in a public office while working at Rupert Murdoch’s News of the World tabloid, which he denies. The 56-year-old was previously jailed in 2007 for hacking into the phones of members of the royal household, along with private investigator Glenn Mulcaire. Goodman told the court on Thursday that he used so-called Green Books and internal telephone directories containing contact numbers for staff and senior members of the royal household as a basis for his stories. Under questioning by his defence lawyer in his first day in the witness stand, Goodman denied paying for them and said one green book was given to him in 1992 by Diana. “That arrived at my office in Wapping with my name on it. She had a (good) relationship with several journalists -- Richard Kay at the Daily Mail, Martin Bashir of Panorama,” Goodman told the court. Three years later Diana would open up to Bashir about the state of her marriage to Charles, in an explosive BBC interview that ultimately led to the royal couple’s divorce the following year. Diana, the mother of Princes William and Harry, was killed in a car crash in Paris in 1997. Asked how he used the information in the royal directories, Goodman described one story he wrote about the flying of the flag at Buckingham Palace after Diana’s death. “People (members of the public) wanted the flag at half-mast but the palace got caught up in stuffy protocol because the Queen wasn’t there,” and refused to raise it, he told the court. “Then a flag shot up a pole for about 20 minutes and then came down again. The palace said it was a mistake but we had a tip-off that it was a palace fireman who was so enraged.” Goodman said he used the contacts book to track down the fireman, who confirmed the story off the record. Murdoch shut down the News of the World in July 2011 following allegations of widespread phone hacking at the Sunday tabloid.

Woodley has followed in the footsteps of fellow actresses Jennifer Lawrence, Kristen Stewart and Lily Collins by signing on to star in film adaptations of best-selling young adult novels. While she felt a kinship with ‘The Hunger Games’ actress Lawrence, even asking her for advice before accepting the lead role in ‘Divergent’, Woodley doesn`t feel the same affinity for Stewart`s series, reports eonline.com. Twilight, I`m sorry, is about a very unhealthy, toxic relationship, said Woodley of the romance between Bella Swan and Edward Cullen, played by Stewart and Robert Pattinson. ngelina Jolie has revealed she plans to have further surgery in a bid to prevent herself developing cancer. The star had both breasts removed last year after tests showed she carries the BRCA1 gene, meaning her chances of contracting both breast and ovarian cancer are very high. ‘I’ll get advice from all these wonderful people who I’ve been talking to, to get through that next stage.’ Angelina, 38, is expected to have a hysterectomy and an oophorectomy, where the ovaries are removed, to combat her raised odds of developing ovarian cancer, which stand at 50 per cent. Speaking to EW she explained that she was overwhelmed by the support she was offered after revealing her secret mastectomy. She said: ‘I was very, very moved by all the support and kindness from so many people.’ Angelina had the genetic test because her mother Marcheline Bertrand died from ovarian cancer in 2007, and the Salt star’s results showed she had an 87 per cent chance of developing breast cancer and 50 per cent risk of ovarian cancer. Angelina’s maternal grandmother had died at age 45 from an unknown illness, and her aunt died of breast cancer aged 65. The star also revealed in the

same interview that her surgery last year brought her closer to other people battling health problems as they want to share their stories with her. She explained: ‘Wherever I go, usually I run into women and we talk about health issues, women’s issues, breast cancer, ovarian cancer. I’ve talked to men about their daughters’ and wives’ health. ‘It makes me feel closer to other people who deal with the same things and have either lost their parents or are considering surgeries or wondering about their children.’ In the same interview Angelina explained why her four-year-old daughter Vivienne was cast in her new movie Maleficent. Angelina admitted it was out of necessity rather than choice as all of the other children who auditioned for the movie were terrified when they saw her in character as Sleeping Beauty’s nemesis, with prosthetic cheekbones and horns. She explained magazine: ‘We think it’s fun for our kids to have cameos and join us on set, but not to be actors. That’s not our goal, for Brad and I, at all. But the other three- and four-year-old [performers] wouldn’t come near me. It had to be a child that liked me and wasn’t afraid of my horns and my eyes and my claws. So it had to be Viv.’

Sania-Cara reach final of Indian Wells INDIaN WELLS, MaRch 14 (aFP): Australian Open champion Li Na booked her semifinal berth at the Indian Wells hardcourt tennis tournament with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Dominika Cibulkova. China's Li, the world number two who is the top seed in the event, reprised her triumph over Slovakia's Cibulkova in the final in Melbourne, although she labored two hours and 36 minutes to do it. Li was firmly in control in the opening set, breaking Cibulkova to start the match. She dropped her own serve in the next game, but immediately broke the Slovakian again, and fended off two break points in the fourth game to stretch her advantage. Li couldn't convert break chances in the fifth, but pocketed the set with a break in the ninth game, sealing it with a forehand cross court winner. But Cibulkova turned the tables in the second set as Li's error count crept up, breaking the Chinese in the third and fifth games and holding for a 5-1 lead. Li won the next three games, but couldn't hold off Cibulkova any longer as the Slovakian held to force a third set. After an exchange of breaks in the first two games, Li gained the decisive break in the eighth. Both players struggled with their serves at times on the sunny stadium court, each coughing up eight double faults and facing double-digit break points. Li, who successfully defended her title in Shenzhen before capturing her second career Grand Slam title in Australia, will face the winner of Thursday's quarter-final clash between rising US talent Sloane Stephens and Italian veteran Flavia Pennetta.

MELBOURNE, MaRch 14 (aP): Mercedes confirmed its status as favorite to win the Formula One season-opening Australian Grand Prix by setting the fastest two times in Friday's practice sessions, with Lewis Hamilton edging his teammate Nico Rosberg. Hamilton failed to complete a lap in the opening practice session due to a malfunctioning oil pressure sensor that shut down his engine, but recovered to set a time of 1 minute 29.625 seconds in the second session around the Albert Park circuit, 0.157 seconds ahead of Rosberg. "That was quite satisfying. On one lap the pace was good, and on the long run, as well," Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said. He added, however, that Hamilton's early problem meant there is still cause for concern. "You need to be very careful because it's enough to have a little problem and

the race or qualifying could be finished." Fernando Alonso of Ferrari was fastest in the first session but dropped to third in the second, half a second off Hamilton's time. Kimi Raikkonen was only seventh fastest in his return to the Italian team after suffering some problems, including failing to select first gear when trying a practice start. "We're still not on top of all the things we need to resolve," Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali said. "The negative sides have to be addressed very quickly because the competition is strong and the time available is not very much." The gaps at the top of the timesheets were reasonably close, which points toward a competitive qualifying session on Saturday and race on Sunday, rather than the Mercedes dominance that many had predicted. Red Bull's Sebastian

Vettel was tipped to struggle in his campaign for a fifth straight drivers' championship due to his team's preseason struggles with Renault's new V6 turbo engine, but he put in an encouraging performance to finish fourth fastest in practice. Vettel and new teammate Daniel Ricciardo — who was sixth fastest — completed a total of 115 laps, which will provide valuable data on the car and engine's performance. "It's been a very strong first day for us," Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said. "We've had a very difficult preseason with numerous issues so it was refreshing to get some laps in and get a first proper feel for the car. "We can see there is quite a gap to the Mercedes and the Ferrari, but we are starting to feel what that gap is and by the end of the weekend we will have a clearer idea."

India leave for World T20, avoid media

INDIaN WELLS , MaRch 14 (PTI): Sania Mirza and Cara Black are in line to win their first title of season as they defeated Lucie Hradecka and Jie Zheng to reach the final of the BNP Paribas Open, a Premier WTA tournament. The fifth seeded Indo-Zimbabwean pair defeated eighth seeded Czech-Chinese team 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 in an hour and 37 minutes in the semifinal of the $5,946,740 hard court event. It will be first final of the 2014 season for Sania and Cara, who had won two back-to-back titles to end the previous season. Before this event, in four tournaments this season, they twice suffered a first round exit and reached quarterfinals of the other two, including Australian Open. There was not much difference between the two sides as they fared almost same in all departments of the game. Sania and Cara (71) won only five more points than their rivals. They now await winners of the other semifinal between Su-Wei Hsieh/Shuai Peng and Svetlana Kuznetsova/Samantha Stosur.

chIcaGO, MaRch 14 (aP): Mike Dunleavy caught an elbow just above the right eye while drawing a charge early in the second quarter Thursday night and left a trail of blood on the court as he ran into the Bulls' locker room. Though the team said Dunleavy's return was questionable, there was never any doubt in his mind. After getting 10 stitches to close the gash,

Dunleavy returned in the second half to score all of his 21 points to help the Bulls pull away for a 111-87 wire-to-wire victory over the Houston Rockets. "I just knew once they got the stitches done I was coming back," he said. "It was a pretty tough hit. My neck is sore — there's some whiplash-type stuff — and we're a little concerned about that, but overall, obviously, I felt pretty good

in the second half. "The hit knocked a little sense into me, I guess." Dunleavy's strong second half paced six Bulls in double figures. Center Joakim Noah flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 13 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in 34 minutes. He was headed for his fourth triple-double of the season, but sat down with about three minutes left because of the lopsided score. Kirk
