Pachaspura killing: SIT remains tight-lipped Confidentiality, marked with apprehension, surrounds the investigation into the Pachaspura killing at 7th Mile, Dimapur. Two weeks on, the Special Investigation Team set up to probe the discovery of nine bodies on January 3 remains tight-lipped on the progress of the case, while the Centre and the Assam government mulls over the idea of a central agency handling the case. SIT head, DIG Liremo Lotha, IPS, DIG (Range/NAP) Kohima, maintained his earlier position stating that the team is on the job and cannot disclose anything at this stage, while citing that it may jeopardize investigation. “We are on the job. When we’re able to make a breakthrough we will definitely tell you,” said DIG Lotha outside the SP’s office in Dimapur on Thursday evening following a meeting of the investigation team. The SIT, according to sources, has got clues which might aid investigation. Queried on this, DIG Lotha replied, “We are working on certain leads, so now at this juncture if we start publicising all this, we have an apprehension that it will jeopardize our investigation.” Asked whether the SIT has been able to establish the authenticity of the Naga Rengma Hills Protection Force’s reported claim of having committed the killings, Lotha said that the team is conducting the investigation “keeping all options open.”

‘NE will have surplus power by June’

agarTala, January 16 (ianS): The industrystarved northeastern region of India would be a power surplus area by June, when ONGC’s 726 MW power project starts full capacity generation, a top official said here Thursday. The 726 MW capacity combined cycle gas-based thermal power project (using both water and natural gas) at Palatana, 60 km from Agartala, in southern Tripura is the state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation’s (ONGC) first commercial power project in India. “The generation from

the first unit (363.3 MW capacity) of the power plant began Dec 31, 2013, and the generation from the second unit (363.3 MW capacity) would start in June,” ONGC Tripura Power Company (OTPC) managing director Sudhindra Kumar Dube said. “However, there are some problems of transmission of electricity in the region. We expect these problems would be overcome,” he told reporters. According to the official, the current peak-hour demand of electricity in the seven northeastern states is 2,200 to 2,300 MW. Now,

the shortage of power is around 100 MW. “After the generation of the second unit of the Palatana power plant, the northeastern states would be able to supply its surplus power to other parts of the country through the national grid,” Dube, a renowned power engineer, said. The Palatana power project was inaugurated by President Pranab Mukherjee June 21. After that, the power plant faced some technical hurdles, but started full generation of electricity from the first unit Dec 31. OTPC is a spe-

cial purpose vehicle (SPV) promoted by ONGC, Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL & FS) and Tripura government, created in 2004 for execution of the 726.6 MW combined cycle gas-based thermal power project. Dube said that from this power plant, Assam will get the maximum share of 240 MW of electricity, followed by Tripura (196 MW), Meghalaya (79 MW), Manipur (42 MW), Nagaland (27 MW), Mizoram (22 MW) and Arunachal Pradesh (22 MW), while IL & FS and OTPC keep 98 MW.

Minister for PWD (Roads & Bridges) and parliamentary affairs Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu today rued the “pitiable” road condition in Nagaland State is like a person with cancer. In this, the minister said that the “pitiable road condition in Nagaland needs immediate treatment.” He stated that though Nagaland is a non-revenue-generating State and has shortage of funds, the Government of Nagaland will try its best to improve the road condition in the State and hoped that the Government of India will extend required assistance. He said this while addressing the 43rd general conference of the Sumi Aphuyemi Kiphimi Kuqhakulu (SAKK) at Kichilimi village under Pughoboto sub division. Referring to the memorandum submitted by the village councils for construction of an all-weather road from Mukalimi Junction to Hoishe village via Kichilimi (Approximately 28.23km), the minister assured that he would try and do whatever is possible. Nienu said that he will coordinate with parliamentary secretary for irrigation and flood control Y. Vikheho Swu to pursue the matter. The minister said that

development is a multi dimensional concept; it is a system to ensure education, a system to ensure health care, security, stability and also to ensure revenue generation. This, he maintained, can be done solely by initiating human

Azo says that though Nagaland is a non-revenuegenerating State, the government will try its best to improve road conditions resource development, on which depends the “march forward.” Taking human resource development in the right way, Nienu asserted, will ensure a bright future but taking the same without earnestness would lead to a “dark and disastrous future.” Stating that students are the backbone of the society and the future, the minister stated that it is time for Nagas to invest in their children and mould them in the correct manner. He urged upon students to be more sincere, dedicated and committed to whatever they do. Also stressing on the need to have quality education to compete with the

fast changing world, he said we need the best among the best today. Nienu encouraged students to concentrate on self determination and career guidance that would help them achieve their goal. In his New Year greetings, the minister said “As we start the New Year, we believe we will start afresh with new friendship, strengthen our bonds and brotherhood and march forward.” He wanted 2014 to be a year of “peace, reconciliation, understanding and coordination amongst the Naga brothers.” The minister was accompanied by parliamentary secretary Y. Vikheho Swu, Shetoyi, MLA Er. Picto, and others. Earlier, SAKK president Caleb Swu delivered the presidential address while welcome address was delivered by Kughakhu Sheqi. Bito Yepthomi, speaker, All Sumi Students’ Union (SKK) also shared greetings. SAKK advisor Kalito H. Chishi chaired the inaugural function. Meanwhile, parliamentary secretary Vikheho Swu will grace the cultural event on January 17 at 9:30am. The conference, which started on January 15, is being held under the theme ‘Re-generation.’ 22 units under Pughoboto sub division are taking part in the conference.
