THUS, SPOKE THE PEOPLE
Narendra Modi scripts history, to become PM; Congress decimated
New Delhi, May 16 (iaNS): In a historic election that would could have far-reaching implications for India’s polity and its policies, Narendra Modi, a rank outsider to Delhi’s politics, was poised Uh-Oh, A Single majority? to become the 14th prime minister This is not good, you have of this diverse nation of 1.2 billion plan Z, Sir ? people, storming into its citadels of power by decimating the Congress party that has ruled the country for much of the period since its independence. “I have been elected as the prime worker of the people,” said Modi, seeking to project his humility in a victory speech at Vadodara, in Gujarat, to almost rockstar-like adulation from screaming supporters, both men and women and thousands of young people. Modi won with a parliamentary record margin of over 570,000 votes from Vadodara, one of the two constituencies from which he contested, the other being Varanasi, from The Morung Express where also he won. “All the people of this country POLL QUESTIOn are ours. that was followed keenly around the world. A host of global leaders from Britain, Japan, Israel, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Australia rang up or sent congratulatory messages to Modi, who is widely expected to have a more muscular foreign policy and even changes some of India’s international equations. The Congress faced its worst humiliation, raising question marks about the future of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty that has given India most of its prime ministers. Congress’ de facto prime ministerial candidate Rahul Gandhi, whose father, grandmother and great grandfather were all prime ministers, was humbled by Modi in a way that the Congress plummeted to its lowest ever two-digit tally in a national election. “It is the start of a new era in Indian politics,” exclaimed Rajnath Singh, the BJP president whose audacious move to name Modi as the
prime ministerial candidate of the party late last year upset the veterans but was wholeheartedly endorsed by the party rank and file. Even political pundits gasped at the sheer scale of the BJP’s sweep. The Congress did not win a single seat in seven states and it was unlikely to win more than 10 seats in any state. The elections proved a graveyard for Congress stalwarts. At least 23 ministers of Manmohan Singh’s government lost. Manmohan Singh, who had announced his retirement earlier this year, did not contest. Many Congress veterans bit the dust. They included Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, Communications Minister Kapil Sibal, Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, Corporate Affairs Minister Sachin Pilot and Sports Minister Jitendra Singh. After the win became clear in the morning itself, a visibly jubilant Modi promptly called on his

ECONOMY: India’s once-impressive economic growth slowed to below 5 percent in the last year while inflation rocketed into double digits. The BJP and Modi maintained a laser focus on the economy throughout the campaign, hammering the Congress party for stalled development projects while touting Gujarat as a model of success. In fact, Gujarat’s growth has been mediocre compared with others of India’s 28 states. But Modi’s message resonated with an electorate aching for change and upward mobility. CORRUPTION: Indians are incensed over the enduring culture of corruption at every level of government. While some scandals have involved BJP members, Modi and his reputation are unscathed. Voters believe Modi has the political strength to curb any corrupt tendencies within his government. YOUTH: India’s electorate is particularly young, with half the country’s 814 million voters under 35 and eager to secure employment with promise. They are also impatient with India’s political tradition of whipping up communal loyalties to secure votes. TECHNOLOGY: The BJP and Modi ran a breathless and tech-savvy campaign that dazzled and engaged voters directly through social media. Modi snapped campaign selfies that went viral and even appeared as a holograph at campaign events. He has tweeted daily for years. By contrast, his main rival from the Congress party, Rahul Gandhi, shunned Twitter himself while his party took to the site only this year. INFRASTRUCTURE: India’s crumbling roads and ports, plus lack of adequate electricity supply, were high on the list of problems that make business projects hard to get off the ground. In Gujarat, Modi made infrastructure improvements a priority, building thousands of kilometers of highways and attracting investment to build up the country’s largest modern port. Associated Press

never compromise with the interests of people. “I want to thank the people for their votes, and as president of the party I accept responsibility for its defeat,” she said Rahul Gandhi said he wanted to congratulate the new government, but he too did not mention either the BJP or Modi. “They have been given the mandate by the people, I want to wish them the best.” “The Congress has done pretty badly, and there is a lot to think about. As vice president I take the responsibility for the party’s defeat in the Lok Sabha polls,” Rahul said. Mother and son then quickly left, declining to take any questions from the thronging media.

mokokchuNg, may 16 (mExN): With reference to the recent media reports on former Chief Secretary Alemtemshi Jamir IAS, the Ao Senden has stated that it is disturbed to see the name of Alemtemshi Jamir being implicated in the current transition of power politics in Nagaland in the media. The Ao Senden said it seriously views the media reports on Alemtemshi Jamir, who has been unreasonably drawn into the issue of selecting the next chief minister of Nagaland. Ao Senden President Prof. Sangyu Yaden and General Secretary Tsupong Longchar in a press release stated that Alemtemshi Jamir IAS, retired Chief Secretary of Nagaland is a bonafide Ao citizen from Mokokchung district, has associated with the subsequent chief ministers of Nagaland during his long bureaucratic career of over three decades. He has contributed immensely to the development of Nagaland state and has proved to be sincere and dedicated IAS officer during his long years of government service who worked selflessly under whichever government came to power in the state.
Asserting that many succeeding governments have utilized the expertise of former retired chief secretaries and bureaucrats in different capacities, as they have been able to efficiently handle the laid down rules and procedures, Ao Senden said, “This was a practice over the years, which is based purely within the prerogative of the ruling government.” Further, Ao Senden said that it is more disturbing to note that the issue of the “Bedrock of Naga Society” booklet has been brought up in this present chief ministership issue. The Ao Senden reminded that Alemtemshi Jamir IAS has clarified his position in detail to the collective leaders of NSCN (IM) in the presence of Ao Senden officials on 21st November, 2008 at Hebron Camp. “The matter has been amicably solved. The Ao Senden seriously takes up the issue as to why and how the booklet issue has been rejuvenated overnight in connection with the present issue of Chief Ministership of Nagaland? It is irrelevant to the present context and raking up of an old issue indicates some irrational and vested interest for some political mileage.”
Ao Senden, as the apex body of the Ao community, has taken note of this seriously and calls upon the people to restrain from making such undemocratic allegation against its members by undermining the sanctity of Hoho’s initiatives by bringing up issues that have already been resolved, it added. “While it is true that we live in a democratic country where freedom of press and expression is guaranteed by the constitution of India, it is needless to embroil a responsible retired officer in news that is unjustified and politically motivated,” the Ao Senden also said. “Any citizen can share and express his/her personal opinion concerning the prevailing situation in the state and elsewhere,” however, “the Ao Senden strongly feels that every individual or group should be cautious enough not to indulge in tarnishing the image of prominent citizens based on propaganda.” Therefore, the Ao Senden “strongly appeals each and everyone to rise above vested interests and tribe interests but work towards the collective interests of the Naga society.”

The CPI-M, the dominant partner of the Left Front, has been winning both the seats uninterruptedly since 1996. A record 85% of the 2.38 mn electorates voted in the two-phase polls for two seats in the state - April 7 and 12.
ShilloNg, May 16 (iaNS): Former Lok Sabha speaker Purno Sangma has made his way back to national politics by winning the Tura Lok Sabha seat, while incumbent Congress member Vincent H. Pala retained the Shillong seat in Meghalaya. Sangma, candidate of the National People's Party which is part of the BJP-led NDA, defeated Congress candidate Daryl William Cheran Momin by 39,716 votes. Sangma polled 2,39,301 votes while Momin got 1,99,585 votes. Former union minister and Congress leader Pala defeated his nearest rival, independent candidate P.B.M. Basaiawmoit by 40,379 votes. "It was expected that the NDA would win the Lok Sabha election, but the kind of result it showed was unexpected and extraordinary, and the people's mandate expressed a new hope for a vibrant India under the leadership of Narendra Modi," Sangma told IANS after winning from Tura. "The election results have proved that people are totally against the Congress for its failure to tackle corruption and price
Meghalaya has highest percent of voters opting for NOTA
ShilloNg, May 16 (PTi): Meghalaya emerged with the highest percentage of voters who chose the NOTA option available with the EVMs introduced for the first time, an election official said today. As many as 2.8'% of the 10,80,845 voters pressed the NOTA button instead of the other 10 candidates in the two parliamentary seats in Meghalaya, he said. In Tura, where former Lok Sabha speaker P A Sangma was reelected for the ninth term, 19,276 persons pushed the NOTA button, the official said. As many as 10,960 voters in the state capital also chose not to cast their votes for any of the eight candidates in the fray, but pressed the NOTA button where sitting Congress MP Congress Vincent H Pala retained his seat. The election official, however, said the NOTA option would not impact the results of the elections irrespective of the number of votes it garnered. "The NOTA option on EVMs has no electoral value. Even if the maximum number of votes cast is for NOTA, the candidate getting the most of the remaining votes would be declared winner," he said. About 1.5% of voters in Mizoram also chose the NOTA button. hike, ehwhich has greatly affected the Indian masses," the NPP leader said. Sangma attributed his victory to the failure of the Congress-led government in Meghalaya to tackle insurgency and other developmental issues in the Garo Hills. "People have shown faith in

The Commission observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights.

Chawngthu becomes Mizoram’s first woman MLA since 1987
aizawl, May 16 (ageNCieS): In a littlenoticed assembly by-poll in Mizoram for which results were announced along with the general assembly Friday, a Congress candidate has become the state’s first woman MLA since the 1987 state elections. State Congress youth president Vanlalawmpuii Chawngthu, 35, won the Hrangturzo by-poll with a margin of 2503 votes to retain the seat for the ruling Congress.
The seat was won but later vacated by CM Lal Thanhawla in last November’s polls. He currently represents Serchhip his traditional bastion. Chawngthu, better known as O.P-i, is the daughter of senior Congress leader C Chawngkunga. She becomes only the fourth woman to be an MLA in Mizoram’s history. O.P-i’s campaign was in a way aided by Mizoram’s apex women’s body, the
Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP) which had issued public statements asking for votes for the Congress candidate saying it is time for Mizo women to hold higher positions of governance. The body’s local units also took part in the campaign on O.P-i’s side. O.P-i has meanwhile said she will work to pave a wider path for Mizo women to occupy positions of power and governance in the future.
Two killed in BSF firing in Assam
guwahaTi, May 16 (PTi): Two persons were killed today when the BSF opened fire on a group of people, who attacked Panbari Police Station in Chirang district in the violence-hit Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) area, police said. The incident took place this morning after a boy was injured in an accidental firing by the Army during a patrol duty, BTAD IGP LR Bishnoi told PTI. "The boy was hit in the leg. When army personnel went to the village under Panbari Police Station to take the boy to hospital, villagers did not allow them and around 200-300 people gheraoed and tried to vandalise the police station," he said. "However, a team of BSF personnel, present at the police station, tried to stop
the public but could not... And to control the situation they opened fire and two persons were killed in that," Bishnoi said. The IGP, however, rubbished that the incident was the result of a poll-related violence at the BTAD, where recently at least 46 people were killed by terrorists. Meanwhile, in a separate incident, another boy was injured in Kokrajhar, also in the BTAD area, by accidental firing by the banned NDFB. "What we could gather so far from all the evidences and the boy's version, it seems a group of NDFB militants were passing by a village in Kokrajhar. At that time, probably one of their arms misfired and a bullet hit the boy. He is out of danger now," Bishnoi said.
Changlang and Longding (DoTCL) Yumsum Matey losing in the hustings. Regional Peoples' Party of Arunachal working president Nikh Kamin won from Bordumsa-Diyun, the lone un-reserved seat in the state by defeating Singpho by a margin of 1328 votes, while its candidate Tirong Aboh won from Khonsa West constituency by defeating Matey by a margin of 1908 votes. However, PPA's sitting MLA and Chief Ministerial candidate Laeta Umbrey lost to new comer Muchu Mithi of Congress from Roing seat by a margin of 2185 votes.

me and I promise to take up their issues in parliament and will try to initiate steps to ensure peace and development," the Garo leader said. Sangma's foray into politics began in 1977 when he won the Lok Sabha election from Tura on a Congress ticket. He went on to
win the Lok Sabha elections in 1984, 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004 besides the by-election in 2006. In 2004, he contested as a Trinamool Congress candidate. For a brief period - 1988 to 1990 - he was Meghalaya chief minister. Pala managed to retain his Lok Sabha seat, despite opposition from some Congress party leaders. He secured 2,09,340 votes while his rival Basaiawmoit polled 1,68,961 votes. In 2009, Pala had won from Shillong by over one lakh votes. Pala admitted that the antiincumbency factor affected him in getting more votes. "The anti-incumbency and BJP putting up a candidate in Shillong affected me a lot," he said. Moreover, he admitted that there were "internal differences" in the beginning of his campaign, but said they were resolved after the party high command's intervention. A total of 10,960 people chose the "None Of The Above" (NOTA) option in Shillong and 19,276 in Tura.

Noke: The Sacrifice For A Cock
y health is intact and I am ready to lead the government if party asked to do so”. This is a few words coming out from one of the most low profile and the veteran regionalist which shaken and rattled many to the extent of some fleeing to Kaziranga forest in Assam. One wonder how farther these people will escape if he have ever said I am a contender to the post of Chief Minister. The roar of this Konyak strongman send waves across the state pushing the man into the race for Chief Minister disturbing the mind of unstable young leaders of the party. To start with his political career, Noke joined the regional party of Nagaland (UDF) and contested to the 3th General Election to the Nagaland legislative Assembly in the year 1974 from 43 Tapi constituency under Mon district and won 7th times including to the present House. During his four decades of his political career, he served in various capacities holding many important portfolios. Despite many ups and downs of the regional party in Nagaland, Noke remain steadfast, never forsaken and wavered from regional party and loyal with heart dedication to uphold his principle and ideology. I am sure he might have been lured by other parties to sway him away from regional party but in all times he flatly rejected
it. He stood firm to support Vizol as Chief Minister of Nagaland, supported Jasokie to make him as Chief Minister and hold hands to make Vamuzo as Chief Minister. Indeed it was Noke who proposed Rio as Chief Minister of Nagaland in 2003.This is the reason why he said in one of the recent press interview that “It is payback time to ENPO” by other tribes . And this is a man who did not said payback to me but to ENPO. But sadly, ENPO were not ready and do not understand the trick behind all scene. The apex body of Eastern areas viz.. ENPO and ENSF remains unusually silent which I find it mysteriously too. It is learnt from media that Rio desired to hand over his seat to eastern people implying ENLU members. Perhaps, Rio initially feared the numerical ENLU holds with 19 MLAs in the government and may be a deciding factor who would lead the government after he left. Moreover, NOKE being the senior most in DAN III is unavoidable. But I do not know if I am right when I say Rio played very trick double politics. In one side, by slip of his tongue Rio says he desired next CM from ENLU whereas, he groomed and gave enough time for TR Zeliang to prepare the ground work to deal with any situations and circumstances. Or did Rio hit hard to break the ENLU and push NOKE forward just to save himself af-
ter knowing well the game is over!!.In spite of his probability and capability to be a leader Noke never said he wanted to be a Chief Minister or enter the fray as a contender. He maintained that party will decide and he prefers for consensus within the party and not a contest after all party unity and strength is his top most priority. Infact, I for one never thought that leader would be elected in the presence of wild animals in Kaziranga park but by the NPF legislators supported by party loyalists. As seasoned politician who witnessed many crisis and tumult, I believed Noke never wanted defection and split happening ,subsequently fall of government particularly when NPF is elected by thumping majority by the common masses. The most difficult task for eastern MLAs is to be united. Today these 19 MLAs could not joined hands for common cause than sorry to say it is impossible to bring the thousands population together. Rather it is embarrassing to talk about Frontier Nagaland whereas to me I am afraid it may take 100 years not to get statehood but for UNITY henceforth. As a reasoned individual, it is hard to digest about the fact that these ENLU members agreed, adopted and signed the resolution to remain united as far as CM issue is concern not once but twice to the best of my knowledge. Believe it or
not some ENLU members were already mid way to Kaziranga before they reaffirm the resolution for the second time!.As one of the undisputed senior leader, Noke received encouragement and support from various tribes except from some of the most trusted eastern leaders. Some tend to justify betrayal by saying Noke entered at the last stage as a contender but are we late even today? Has next CM already elected? What are the promises made to them that they are already committed 10 days ahead? I am given to understand that Noke is least interested to be CM but most importantly, what he wanted being the chairman of ENLU is to stay united and to support enbloc whoever became CM. Or what is harm to make him become the first Chief Minister of state from eastern areas after more than 50 years of statehood? Even if he is not personally interested, ENLU should have pressurized him to take over and take a golden chance and with strong support behind his back he would have never shy away from the responsibility. Or ENLU can nominate anyone capable within ENLU or outside. Indeed, Noke must have visualised this situation through his 4 decades political experiences or may not have been convinced by reluctant support shown by few ENLU members. No doubt ENLU members will remain
elected leaders and continue to enjoy powers but the number 19 will always remain to mean DISUNITY in the minds of the eastern and eastern Nagas stands exposed thereon. Since the situation and circumstances made him the contender particularly by the media against TR Zeliang for the Chief Minister (which he never said he is contesting), Noke have to come out and used ‘withdraw’ just to stop the whole debate and dirty politics taking place. By his decision, Noke showed his maturity and acted elderly for peaceful settlement of boiling issue. This indicates his love and sacrifice for the party he holds close to his heart. The wise decision he has taken not only settled the crisis but bring tears to many regionalist who knows who he is. Ultimately, for Noke the only thing in his mind is the survival of the party to lead on the government as mandated by the Nagas. To him, nothing is greater than the cock symbol flying high all over Nagaland particularly in the lands of Vizol, Jasokie and Vamuzo. To Noke it may just be another political experience but to us the dream of the eastern nagas becoming the Chief Minister remains not only even a night dream but day dream. W. What is ‘possible’ from ‘impossible?’
A
s funny as it may sound, the root word of impossible is possible and it is of certain that most of us may have known this fact that we have not yet realized. The moment we begin to think or do something, the first thought that would come to our mind would be, ‘whether it is possible or impossible?’. When doubts arise in our minds the choices that we make bring the results we want. Everything thing is possible if we think we can and it is also impossible when we think we cannot. The word impossible originated in the 14th century from a Latin word ‘impossibiles’ simply meaning not able to do or which is very difficult to dealt with. History and experiences tell us that those that were considered impossible were overcome with achievements and accomplishments and are now possibilities. It was simply their faith in their abilities and the conviction that they can achieve. Almost every day and in many forms we are faced with obstacles which are presumed as impossible and those barrage may be in the form of fear, in faith, friends, greed, anger and many more but this is
what I want to share how with God ones impossibility becomes a possibility and possibility into a probability and it into a fact. Perhaps it is true to view that some things are impossible to men but with God all things are possible. I am not making a faith statement but it is my conviction about making impossible a possibility and a reality. Perhaps the most common thing which makes us project impossible is fear, now fear is what wants us to run from something that isn’t after us. The proper response to fear would be to have faith and step up to the plate or we will never get the opportunity let alone to succeed. Due to fear we face failure but failure on the other hand is not about falling down but rather staying down so we must view failure as rather a stumble and not as a fall so, the fact is that these stumble prevent us to fall. But just like a villain in all stories the word ‘impossible’ has a way of saying no to many of our good ideas or chances in life but one thing which must be kept firm is to believe in oneself because there always comes a time when one must stand all alone. It’s just that if we are capable of standing alone
when that time comes we will be able to face the temptations. Thomas Edison one of the greatest inventors in all time once said “the best thinking has been done in solitude and the worst has been done in turmoil” even nature shows example to this view eagles fly alone crows fly in groups and the question is who decides to be an eagle or a crow. Many of us has great dreams and ambition it may vary from one to another but most of us make excuses that it can’t be achieved, the reason why people can’t achieve their own dream is because of excuses and blaming others for their failures. We must leave the word excuse behind us as there is no excuse for being full of excuses simply we must learn from our mistakes. If we don’t waste our time denying and defending them it is for certain that we would face victory down the path. Endurance is important in this journey and we need to focus our mind and attention on our goals and aspirations. Allthesereasonsforanindividualtoview impossibleaspossibleandtosucceedwould be meaningless if one does not view life as
full of possibilities and interesting. We must therefore be optimistic about life no matter what the consequences we may be on in thismodernandcompetitiveworldwemust have eyes which don’t look but see. We need commitment to our life and life’s longings. Life as of today will be as it is, if one does not begin to make the impossible as possible, so let’s begin right now as winning starts with beginning within a little thing lies a big opportunity, do all that it takes to be successful in small things. We must not be deceived by failures as when one makes marks in life it is for certain that we will attract a lot of erasers the world is full of bullies. But by overcoming all these we achieve what others can’t be done. There aren’t any books, secrets nor shortcut to success but one thing remain clear if we view life as it is with an open mindedness and be ready to work hard and fight for our own will, it is for certain that happiness will follow as the saying goes ‘determination leads to destination’. I
am neither happy with the NRHM nor am I with the Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA), which has insisted that the NRHM Mission Director must be manned by an IAS officer. On the other hand the Nagaland Inservice Doctors Association (NIDA) insists that it should be manned by a senior doctor; in the rank of a Director. I do not know if the NMA sees anything special with the IAS; but being mothers, they know, and I am also very sure that a child can best be looked after by its own mother, and not by a beautiful model. So also NRHM by a doctor; an experienced senior doctor. Having noted the MOU of NRHM and Govt of Nagaland approval, from logical side of the coin, here I am with the NIDA, and which the readers may also judge and comment. Er. The Political Talk
O
ne of world’s longest political talks between the Government of India and the Nagas NSCN (IM) has been hanging over a decade and a half. The leadership of the Congress Government had failed to bring about the solution. Now under the new leadership of the Union Government whoever it may be, the talk will be resumed shortly as expected. On the side of the Nagas, the factional Governments have resuscited their talk about forming a single National Government, but whether it will be successful or not, it will take time. So my personal opinion is that as a preliminary step, the team of the talk be enlarged and strengthened by inducting one or two representatives from each of the Political Groups in the next sitting of the talk. Seeking power from on high, both sides should make a commitment, “We will do anything basing on knowing the true God, believing in Him, fearing Him and obeying Him.” Rev. L. Suohie Mhasi
Letter to Arvind Kejriwal Dear Arvind Kejriwal, When you could throw out the powerful Congress Regime of Sheila Dikshit in Delhi, you had brought a political revolution in this largest democratic nation in the world. All the political intellectuals, pundits and thinkers supported you particularly your style of leading the war from the front in the simplest form. The country woke up to your unique political character and you had emerged as an unprecedented political icon when the country was plunging into unprecedented scandals after scandals. Your decision to join politics was fundamentally to fight against corrupt Congress Government but when you took the support of Congress MLAs to form the Delhi Government, the very political purpose and ideology you set in was literally defeated. Your political journey was further compounded by your apparent failure to run the administration for even two months at Delhi and running away from the responsibilities. These made you extremely vulnerable, politically. However, you and your party, AAP, could have performed still magic if you did not take to decision to expand your very nascent political party to other parts of India. You should have concentrated on Delhi alone. The people would have still loved and voted for you. Greed for power destroys everything. What is the point to win everything if the soul perishes? Yet in your case, you lose everything including soul. Oken Jeet Sandham

Reason must prevail: Adinno Phizo CM writes to
KOHIMA, MAY 16 (MExN): President of the Naga National Council (NNC), Adinno Phizo, today stated that the “policy of the NNC at all time has been and will be to resolve differences with others through understanding and peaceful means.” “Reason must prevail and we hope India will leave Nagaland soon,” said the NNC President, in a press note, while extending greetings to the Naga people on the 63rd anniversary of Naga Plebiscite Day of May 16, 2014. Adinno asserted that the Naga people “are not fighting for political power but to save the country from foreign domination.” She expressed hope that modern India “should understand best because she too was against foreign domination for a long time and got her freedom only in 1947.” We know the Nagas are not Indians and Nagaland is not Indian territory, Adinno stated and asserted that the referendum of 1951 was

KOHIMA, MAY 16 (MExN): “During the Plebiscite the Nagas had only one objective and that was ‘We Nagas are one. And Nagas are not Indians’. But today we have become extremely divided. What Nagas started in the beginning had a different motive than what it is now.” said Lhouvitsü Tatar Hoho, FGN during the 64th Naga Voluntary Plebiscite Day which was commemorated at Chedema Peace Camp on 16th May, 2014. By tradition the Nagas take oath
seriously,” said Adinno. She reminded that when India “invaded” Nagaland in 1954, the Nagas though unprepared did not get frightened but “were ready to defend the country and fought well with sheer determination.” Fighting continued till 1964, and the Government of India agreed to a ceasefire agreement with the Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN), initiated by the Nagaland Baptist Church
The program was chaired by Thepucüyi Vadeo, Joint Secretary, NNC, while the prayer was invoked by Thihü Khamo, Assistant Secretary and Chaplain. that from 1954 onwards, “a massive concentration of Indian army occupied Nagaland and later the Indian Government enacted the Armed Forces Special Powers Act in 1958 to empower its armed forces, which continues till today.” Adinno questioned as to “what the government of India is going to prove to the world? Since the Nagas are not demanding anything from India.” She asserted that the conflict with India

to accept NPSC applications till the last day. It assured that the Department of IT&C is taking extra precautions in the process and appealed for all aspiring NPSC candidates not to wait till the last moment for submission of application form to the VLEs (CSC operators) for online payment and subsequent uploading of NPSC application forms.

With the PWD (Roads & Bridges) unresponsive, the Nagaland Foothill Road Coordination Committee (NFHRCC) has reiterated its demand for withdrawal of the ‘Notice Inviting Tender’ (NIT) dated May 8, 2014. The 7-day deadline stipulated by the NFHRCC to retract the NIT (No. CE (R & B) / TENDER / FH / 2013-14) expires on May 18. According to the NFHRCC, neither the R & B Chief Engineer nor the Minister in concern has responded to its demand till date. Following the publication of the statement demanding withdrawal of the
NIT, the NFHRCC submitted a representation to the Chief Engineer stating the same, copies of which were forwarded to the Chief Minister, the R & B Minister and the R & B Commissioner & Secretary. With no response forthcoming, the NFHRCC met on May 16 in Dimapur and issued another statement. As stated earlier, the NFHRCC asserted that the PWD (R & B) will be held responsible for any eventuality arising out of the department’s failure to pull back the May 8 NIT. Stating that the May 8 NIT was in total contravention of the April 25, 2014 “table tender”, the NFHRCC
stated, “It is expedient to mention that the 1st phase of the work order was issued through table tender. Subsequently, on 25th April, 2014, the table tender was initiated with regard to issuance of the 2nd work order. Mention may also be made that on the request of the department, the construction at Longtho MI project -Yajang C segment was started.” However, the department, flouting as well as ignoring the April 25 table tender, floated issued NIT for the said segment. While viewing the unresponsive attitude of the department “very seriously”, the NFHRCC stated, “In the event, the department re-
mains silent, the NFHRCC is fully determined to resort to any appropriate action.” In this regard, an action committee has been formed to organised appropriate follow up action “to safeguard the Naga road for survival,” it added. The NFHRCC further appealed all contractors, the NCSU in particular, not to participate “in the proposed open tender which is proposed to be held on May 19. Furthermore, the NFHRCC extended appreciation to the land owners for parting with their land without any compensation and the Naga political groups for not levying any tax with a view to accomplish the Naga survival road.

UN photo archive tells story of Palestinian exodus Karin Laub and Ibrahim Barzak associated Press
A 1975 photo shows Palestinian refugee Fathiyeh Sattari, her eyes wide with worry, as she presents her malnourished baby boy to a doctor at a clinic run by a U.N. aid agency. The photo is one of 525,000 in the agency's archive being digitized to preserve a record of one of the world's most entrenched refugee problems, created in what the Palestinians call the "Nakba," or "catastrophe" in Arabic — their
their home in what is now Israel in 1948. Fathiyeh was born in the Gaza Strip and raised her own family in the Rafah refugee camp. Her son Hassan — the baby with the gaunt face in the photo — is now a 40-yearold father of five, living in another camp. They appear resigned to never being able to return to their ancestral home. Hassan said he doesn't believe Israel would ever agree to take back large numbers of refugees who, along with their descendants, now number more than 5 million across the Middle East. "Without confrontation, we can't go back," he told The Associated Press. Instead, he's banking on education for his children to help them escape. He said he was taking time off from work as a government auditor this week to help his 9-year-old son Abdel-Hai prepare for final exams. He said he's too busy to mark the Nakba, commem-

uprooting in the war over Israel's 1948 creation. As Palestinians mark the Nakba's 66th anniversary Thursday, the photos tell the story of the refugee crisis' transition from temporary to seemingly permanent. Tent camps of the 1950s have turned into urban slums with some alleys so narrow residents can only walk single file past drab multi-story buildings. The mother and son of the 1975 photo are part of a family that is now in its fourth generation as refugees. Sattari's parents fled
orated each year in the West Bank and Gaza Strip with speeches and wailing sirens on May 15, a day after Israel was founded in 1948. This year's commemorations come after a new blow to prospects for an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal that could include a political solution for the Palestinian refugees. U.S.-brokered negotiations fell apart in April, the latest in more than two decades of failed attempts to set up a Palestinian state next to Israel. The fate of the refugees is one of the most contentious issues on the table. Israel opposes a mass return, fearing it would dilute the state's Jewish majority. In the Palestinian public discourse, a largescale return is still portrayed as the main goal. The Palestinian leadership has said each refugee has the right to choose his or her fate, including return or resettlement in a state of Palestine or third countries, but also
hinted at flexibility in the context of a final deal. According to U.N. figures, more than 700,000 Palestinians fled or were driven out in the 1948 Mideast war, many settling in the neighboring West Bank, Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. Tens of thousands more were displaced in the 1967 war in which Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, lands the Palestinians seek for a state. Today, some 1.5 million refugees remain in the region's 58 camps, where the U.N. Relief and Works Agency has provided education, medical care and food since it was created in 1950 to help uprooted Palestinians. In countries where host governments were more welcoming, such as Syria and Jordan, fewer refugees remained in camps than, for example, in Lebanon. From the start, the U.N. agency documented the exodus, accumulating more than 430,000 negatives, 10,000 prints, 85,000 slides, 75 films and 730 video cassettes. In 2009, the U.N. cultural agency UNESCO inscribed the archive in its Memory of the World list, recognizing its historic value. Last year, the $1 million digitization began with funding from Denmark, France and the Palestinian private sector. Most of the work is being done at the Danish Royal Library, while more than 50,000 photos are processed in Gaza. An online database already has close to 2,000 images. In addition, 50 prints were displayed in an exhibit, "The Long Journey," which opened in Jerusalem in November, then traveled to Amman, and is to reach Gaza, the West Bank and the Lebanese capital of Beirut. The photo of Hassan and Fathiyeh Sattari will be part of the Gaza exhibit, said Lionello Boscardi of the U.N. aid agency. He said the photos show the resilience of the refugees and also the U.N. agency's efforts to provide basic services. Fathiyeh Sattari said U.N. aid was crucial for her family. The 1975 photo shows her with her second-oldest, Hassan, at a U.N. clinic. She said Hassan was emaciated because of an infection and because she had trouble breastfeeding. For years, her husband and others in the camp worked in Israel as day laborers. A brother-in-law, Ibrahim, worked in Israel's Rishon Lezion, near the ancestral village, of which only a few houses remain. The children studied in U.N. schools, and one of Fathiyeh's five sons works as a physician in Italy. After the outbreak of a Palestinian uprising in 2000, Israel kept out Gaza workers, and the Sattaris became more dependent on U.N. aid, includ-

Refugees make up the majority of the population of 1.7 million in the tiny Mediterranean coastal strip, where poverty has deepened since Israel and Egypt blockaded the territory following a takeover by the Islamic militant Hamas in 2007. Hassan Sattari is ambivalent about the aid. He received a good education, but believes the support inadvertently prolonged Palestinian exile. "Without UNRWA, there would have been greater pressure for a solution," he said. Chris Gunness, a spokesman for the U.N. agency, dismissed that idea. "What perpetuates the refugee problem is the failure of the political parties to solve it," he said.

H Akato Sema: The NTC have scheduled the 13th of may 2014 to stage massive rally at Dimapur town to stand against the State Governments decision and blatant notification of recognizing the Rongmei tribe as an indigenous inhabitant tribe of Nagaland. According to my own understanding, The NTC fully believes and acknowledges the fraternal relationships of every Naga brethren irrespective of Geo-political barriers. However, basing o the factual documentary proofs and guidelines such as; Notification dated 28/4/1977 No.AR-8/876 had clearly defined the status of indigenous inhabitants of the state of Nagaland. The criteria for determining a person to have had a permanent settlement in the state of Nagaland prior to 1-12-1963 must be a person whose name or parents name or legitimate guardians, in case the person was than a minor should have been entered in the Electoral Roll published on 5-12-1963; or a person or His/her parents or legitimate guardians should have been paying house tax prior to 1-12-1963; or a person or His/her parents or legitimate guardians should have acquired property and Patta to 1-12-1963. The issue of indigenous inhabitant certificate to any individual members should be done in consonance with the prescribed policies and legislated laws of the state. However, it seems despite the above empirical fact, The State Cabinet without considering the factual prescribed norms blatantly recognized the Rongmei tribes as indigenous inhabitant tribe of Nagaland. This very random Cabinet decision seems to be much against the wishes of the people. I as a mere public observer, the NTC's move on this issue is to avert the negative impact that may crop up between Rongmeis and the Nagas of Nagaland. This polarization between the two hatched by the state Cabinet must be immediately done away with by applying the sense of brotherhood with the realization and acceptance of the documentary facts and guideline and notifications so as to ameliorate the ages old fraternal relationships between the two. The state Govt. must accept the empirical facts and listen to the voice of the people by adhering to the laid notifications and guidelines and not otherwise. Because it is a paramount importance for the Naga tribes to respect and acknowledge the situational realities that binds us together with mutual recognition and acceptance to collectively strive for our common vision and determination! What sort of legacy are we going to pass on to our coming up Naga generations? My dear esteemed bloggers, we got to see and hear by our own selves and contribute our best for what is right and what is wrong. Please share your opinion in this regard and make it a POINT to attend the said meeting. Jenpu Rongmei: The present Situation of Rongmei issue is not about the whole Rongmei of Assam and Manipur..the issue is about the Rongmei indigenous of Nagaland, where our forefathers had lived here in dimapur under Sibsagar district (Naga Hills)with settlement order by the British Goverment. Our Rongmei Indigenious has suffered lot. To swear to God as a Christian Young Man, the Rongmei Indigenous People Of Nagaland is not enjoying any dual facilities, I am not against any organization like NTC but it be would be a much appreciate if NTC study our history too. NTC as a Apex and Intellectual organization people have lots of expectation likewise we the Indigenous Rongmeis of Nagaland have same faith on NTC Leaders. Dear Bloggers (Young & Old) it would be a very grateful to each and everyone if anyone at least try to understand the problems of Indigenous Rongmei of Nagaland. We have been faced so many discrimination by other fellow Naga Brothers in school, college, workplace etc. How Long will you all discriminate us? How long will you hate us? Our forefathers have died here, sacrifice their lives for the Nagas during British Rule and the descendants of those Forefathers are suffering and discriminated by own brothers. My humble appeal to all the Young Naga Bloggers to atleast listen our genuine Grievances and then you can react or do anything. But brothers and sisters to swear to God, our Rongmei indigenous of Nagaland has suffer lot but we still have a hope from the Nagas brothers of Nagaland. Thank you..God bless you all...(Bro Akato my comments is not a rejoinder or counter to any bloggers or You) K Wapong Longkumer: The GON need to consider the basic human rights of those people domiciled in Nagaland as citizens of India and we are all bound by the Constitution of India. It seems since there was no clear cut domicile rules/laws in place for Nagaland State the Govt. just accommodated all those people settled prior to 1963 as indigenous. Maybe it was the best our leaders could do during the run-up to the creation of the state as some of the Marwaris/Punjabis/Nepalis were there in Dimapur area since 19th century (I am not kidding) and we really needed Dimapur to be under the newly created state. Now coming back to the Rongmeis, the 1313 and their descendants- we can never deny that they are not Scheduled Tribes. I am pretty sure that they will win the case in the High Court and also in the Supreme Court!! and GON have to issue ST certificates for them like it or not. Our problem is now they have an indigenous certificate as well as an ST certificate both issued by the GON so automatically they enjoy equal rights as the rest of us. I think it’s the reason why the NTC (first by Mr.T.Solo) has started using the term 'aboriginal' to describe the rest of us! Maybe one day we will have, ABORIGINAL CERTIFICATE, INDIGENOUS CERTIFICATE, DOMICILE CERTIFICATE AND THEN SCHEDULED TRIBE CERTIFICATE! (The term aboriginal also has a problem because Mech Kacharis, Dimasa Kacharis, Garos are aboriginal to Dimapur district) Now here is another flipside, if the GON indeed comes up with a domicile rule to put some checks it will look pretty horrendous if the checks are applied for this particular case. The domicile rules usually stipulate place of birth and the years one has stayed at particular place. At present many of those 1313 Rongmeis are no longer alive but for their descendants!! Moreover the intent about domicile rules everywhere is not about denying rights but giving rights (read benefits) to those who qualify according to the number of years they have settled in that state. Then comes the other issues like tax and so on. The state Government has been very protective of Govt. Jobs all these years, the intention being to accommodate only Nagas and those with indigenous certificates as far as possible. By having a general domicile rule we will be opening doors of Govt. jobs to persons who have been living in the state for even as less as 5 years. If we make it say 20 years then someone will surely contest legally with a chance to win. Means we will have a non Naga, non Indigenous persons applying for NPSC! Actually, even without a domicile rule in place a 2nd-3rd generation Non Naga person born and brought up in Nagaland may one day legally contest the current setup of not allowing Non-Nagas in NPSC (Something we need to be ready for in the future) So I guess best bet is recognise the 1313 and their descendants. Give them a special status. If GON can differentiate Kukis from Manipur and Kukis from Nagaland, Dimasas from NC Hills and Dimasas from Dimapur, Garos from Assam/Meghalaya and Garos from Nagaland then surely the GON can differentiate the 1313 and their descendants and the new entrants. bout a year ago Narendra Modi sat down with some of India's best and brightest to mount a "shock and awe" election campaign that a strategist likened to a onesided U.S. military operation against Saddam Hussein's forces in the Gulf. From an unmarked office in Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat, the young men and women, some on sabbaticals from firms like JP Morgan and Deutsche Bank, worked on turning a fragmented parliamentary election involving 543 seats into a presidential-style referendum on candidate Modi. In doing so, Modi cut loose from the traditional
Delhi-based structure of his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its apparatchiks and adopted the language of a youthful country eager for change, using everything from holograms to WhatsApp. The modern approach worked: just an hour into the counting of votes on Friday, it was clear that the 63-year-old Modi was heading for a stunning victory with the strongest mandate any Indian government has enjoyed for 30 years. By midday, the BJP and its allies were leading the count in 329 parliamentary seats, far ahead of the 272 majority required to rule. Even on its own, the BJP had crossed the halfway mark. So great appears to be the desire for change, es-
pecially among India's middle class some 300 million strong, and so firmly has Modi stayed on message, that a dark chapter of violence against Muslims on his watch has mattered less and less to many voters. Modi, a Hindu nationalist, has long faced allegations that he looked the other way when Hindu mobs went on a rampage of revenge against Muslims in Gujarat after a train carrying Hindu pilgrims was torched in 2002. He has denied the allegations and a Supreme Court ordered inquiry absolved him of responsibility. Modi has refused calls for remorse for the lives lost, most of them from the sizeable Muslim minority of more than 150

ven if there is little doubt that a wave in favour of Narendra Modi has swept the country, except in parts of the south and the north-east, what is undeniable is that it was an election which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could not lose. The reason is that the Congress made all the mistakes which a political party could make - banked on a dynasty whose arrogant feudalism alienated large sections of the population, pursued a flawed economic policy which turned the focus away from the economic reforms, and sank into corruption because the hands of a personally honest prime minister were tied by a party president intent on keeping the organization in power by any means, fair or foul. Arguably, if Sonia Gandhi had allowed Manmohan Singh to follow market-oriented policies instead of making him take the foot off the accelerator of reforms, as P. Chidambaram acknowledged, then a buoyant economy would have made Modi's task of selling his development agenda much harder, not least because the Manmohan Singh government has been able to bring about a substantial reduction in poverty. But Sonia's pursuit of the programme of the so-called rights-based entitlements for the poor not only violated the norms of fiscal prudence, but fostered the belief that the only hope for the underprivileged lay in the presence at the helm of a munificent dynasty. It is possible, however, that this attitude increasingly began to rile the ordinary people, especially when the economic reforms had fostered entrepreneurship and a sense of self-belief. Modi appealed to this outlook of confidence. His own rise from being a tea-vendor to the prime minister's post exemplifies the "can do" spirit which is the essence of the process of liberalization and globalization which the reforms encapsulated. It is not impossible in this context that he has largely been able to overcome the fear which he is supposed to generate among the Muslims. Considering that growth helps all irrespective of caste or creed, the Muslims, who are mostly at the bottom of the economic ladder, must have come to believe that their condition will improve if Modi comes to power. They may have also factored in the possibility that he will not allow the hotheads in the saffron brotherhood to run amok. The decade-long communal peace in Gujarat and the marginalization of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad there probably helped to convince them. Aware that his image as a minority-
baiter is a disadvantage, Modi refrained from laying any stress on the Hindutva agenda even if he did pander to some of the longstanding fetishes of the saffron camp, such as the incursions of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and the export of beef. But, these references did not detract in any substantial manner from his basic approach with its emphasis on development. Modi also appears to have dispelled the notion of the 'bania' or the trader as dishonest, which has long dominated the discourse of the socialists in India, which projected the poor as honest and the rich as deceitful. Instead, Modi's business-friendly attitude is a unique posture in Indian politics, suggesting that capitalism, reflected in Deng Xiaoping's maxim, "to get rich is glorious", will finally bury Jawaharlal Nehru's Fabian socialism, which has been the Congress's guiding feature. Interestingly, the charge that he encourages crony capitalism hasn't swayed public opinion against him. There is a lesson in this popular approval given to Modi for the dogmabound communist parties and the leftleaning elements in the Congress. If the stalling of the reforms helped Modi to gain electorally, so did the abysmal ineptness of the Manmohan Singh government, which made Modi's decisiveness stand out in marked contrast. Similarly, the self-assurance which he exuded was also in striking contrast to Manmohan Singh's mealy-mouthed attitude which made him appear unsure of himself, whether it was the initial rolling back of the move to introduce foreign investment in the retail sector under pressure from the Trinamool Congress, or the virtual admission that the inclusion of a reference to Balochistan in joint communiqué with Pakistan was a mistake. Since there is generally a preference for a "strong" leader in a country where the political scene still shows signs of instability in the absence of a durable twoparty system, and which has two devious and inimical neighbours in China and Pakistan, Modi's assertive, even abrasive, personality was an advantage. It is not surprising that Indira Gandhi is one of his heroines considering that she is still widely admired because of the perception she gave of being strong. Indira, however, became a victim of her own image when she imposed the authoritarian emergency. Modi's biggest test of leadership will be whether he is able to curb his customary combative nature which is compounded by his insular tendencies. He cannot be unaware that he has been able to turn the BJP into a genuinely national party and is the repository of the high hopes of millions of Indians. He also has a dubious past. Now, he has to focus on ushering in a bright future.
India's "Guangdong" In recent years, the state Modi has governed since 2001 has been compared with Guangdong province, the spearhead of China’s economic revival. Since Modi took control, Gujarat has led the nation in GDP growth. It accounts for 16 percent of industrial output and 22 percent of exports, despite having 5 percent of its population. Under his stewardship, farmers and industry have been assured uninterrupted power, albeit at high rates, and bureaucratic controls slashed. A central governmentordered study last month said it had the best land acquisition policies in place, among all of India's 29 states in terms of ease of doing business. Land, by far, has been the single biggest hurdle around the country, holding up 90 percent of infrastructure projects. Gujarat's highways are India's fastest, a far cry from the potholed roads in the northern belt, and its ports are among the busiest. But repeating that success nationally presents
significant challenges in a country with a complex federal structure, a bureaucracy more wedded to socialist controls than reform and a growing gap between rich and poor among its 1.2 billion people. India must create 10 million jobs a year, four times the pace of the last 5 years, to absorb youth into the workforce. And unlike China, India is not centralised. Modi will have a fight on his hands to gain full cooperation from many state governments, which he needs to implement his agenda nationwide. Some have said the pace of development in Gujarat has caused environmental damage and threatened small communities, and that crony capitalism flourished under Modi's unquestioned rule. Critics also say it lags behind other states in social indicators such as mortality rates. But the criticisms have failed to stick. "Modi has led from the front. None of this would have been possible, but for him," said Rajnath Singh, the president of the BJP and a close associate.
campaign. He has covered 300,000 km since being named the BJP's prime ministerial candidate in September, addressing 457 meetings. When he could not show up, he appeared as a hologram. "He has become a purveyor of dreams," said Sanjay Gupta, a former state bureaucrat who quit to go into business and start a chain of hotels. "Its hard to see how he can meet all the pent-up aspirations without re-engineering the system." The son of a railway station tea-seller, Modi has humble roots which he reminds voters are in contrast to the privileged upbringing of the NehruGandhi dynasty and its scion Rahul Gandhi, who led the campaign for the ruling Congress party. Modi left home after school, virtually cutting off all family ties as he found his calling in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, a right wing organisation that serves as the ideological parent of Hindu groups and the BJP. Its members, who hold military-style drills and indoctrination sessions at grounds across the country each morning, seek to make India a great power, "Purveyor Of Dreams" militarily strong and ecoModi, with his neat- nomically prosperous. ly-trimmed white beard, Kishore Makwana, a was the only face of the member of the RSS who
used to ride pillion on Modi's scooter during his days as a RSS propagandist, said Modi would sometimes sleep on the pavement because he had arrived too late at a host's house and thought it impolite to knock at that hour. "He hasn't forgotten those days. He is firmly rooted," Makwana said. One thing Modi has never talked about publicly is his failed marriage, which reportedly took place when he was in his teens and after the couple had been spoken for by their parents in the tradition of that time. Last month he disclosed for the first time that he was married to Jashodaben in an election declaration after leaving the form vacant in two earlier elections he fought. Modi, according to unofficial biographies, did not accept the marriage and may have left his home for that reason. Jashodaben went back to her brother's house where she has lived and hasn't met her husband for more than 40 years. Modi, said to be a loner, has kept away from his immediate family too, meeting his mother and brothers only occasionally. In an interview he has said that his real education took place in the RSS and
that he owed everything to the organisation. To some, his background in the Hindu group and his handling of the riots in Gujarat remain a cause of concern. Critics say the RSS is deeply opposed to Muslims and that its objective of a Hindu India was a challenge to India's secular traditions. The organisation says it only opposes appeasement of any community. "I find the idea of Narendra Modi as the prime minister of this country deeply repugnant. It is an assault on the idea of India, because of what he represents and what his track record has been," said former Congress minister Mani Shankar Aiyar, one of Modi's most trenchant critics. Within Gujarat itself, critics point to the segregation that has taken place over the last decade. For Muslims it is difficult to buy property in areas dominated by Hindus, forcing the community's fast-growing urban middle class to live in cramped and decrepit corners of cities. "Modi is set to govern all of India, the 150 million Muslims included, and there is reason to be cautious," said Ruchir Sharma, head of emerging markets at Morgan Stanley.

he family that has dominated Indian politics for most of the country's post-colonial history has just been snubbed by voters like never before. In a campaign led by Rahul Gandhi — the son, grandson, and great-grandson of Indian prime ministers — the Indian National Congress party suffered the most crushing defeat in its 128-year history Friday as the results of India's general election were released. The next prime minister will be Narendra Modi, who led the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party to a solid victory, in part by seizing on the perception that Rahul Gandhi was little more than a crown prince awaiting his prize. Voters were furious over Congress' inability to address corruption, unemployment and the sputtering economy. "We are accepting the people's verdict in all humility," Congress party spokesman Shakil Ahmed told The Associated Press. "Trends of the counting are certainly not in our favor. The trends point out that the country has decided to vote against us." The electoral drubbing is a massive comedown for the Gandhi family and a shift in India'stradition-bound society. The family patriarch was Jawaharlal Nehru, a hero of the struggle for independence from British rule who became India's first prime minister, leading the country from 1947 until his death in 1964. Nehru's daughter, Indira Gandhi, later took power, followed by her son Rajiv. Both were killed in political assassinations. Rajiv's Italian-born widow, Sonia, then took over the Congress party, becoming India's most powerful politician and setting the stage for her son, Rahul, to eventually take up the family mantle. The family is not related to Mohandas Gandhi, India's independence leader who was also a senior member of Congress. Rahul Gandhi, the dimpled, 43-year-old family scion, had been presented to voters as a youthful leader who could rejuvenate India's faltering economy, but many saw him as privileged, aloof and out of touch with everyday Indians. years, never even formally declared Gandhi as its candidate for prime minister, political maneuvering aimed at protecting him from being scapegoated if the party — and the family — were to be voted out. During the punishing election campaign, Modi seized on the charges of nepotism aimed at Congress, at one point telling a crowd of supporters: "No one can save this mother-son government now." In a decade in the Indian parliament, Rahul rarely spoke or raised questions, and failed to spend funds allotted for the development of his constituency. In recent state elections in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh states, where Gandhi led the Congress party's campaigns, the party fared dismally. "Rahul is seen as being wellmeaning and harmless. But he is devoid of ideas, or a grand vision for what he wants to do for the country," said Sumit Chakravartty, a political analyst and editor of Mainstream weekly. "He's a poor communicator. When he does speak, what emerges is further evidence of his fuzzy thinking." Congress has had other problems as well. Political analysts say Congress' decline has been evident for years, particularly as the economy slumped and a succession
of corruption scandals came out. But some also consider the party's dependence on one family to be a liability. "India is the world's largest republican democracy and it's weird to have it ruled by a succession of increasingly inept dynasts," said Mukul Kesavan, a historian at the Jamia Millia Islamia university in New Delhi. "This isn't just bad for the party, it's bad for the country because it leaves India without a functional pan-Indian party of the center," Kesavan said. Even in the Amethi constituency, considered a Gandhi stronghold, loyalties were wavering during the campaign. "People say Modi has done wonders in Gujarat," said 33-yearold Ramesh Yadav, referring to the state where Modi has been chief minister for a decade. "There are no industries here. Rahul made many promises when he won last time, but where are the factories he promised?" During his campaign, Rahul Gandhi has tried to whip up some fire into his speeches, but the crowds appeared far from impressed. In many ways, he was overshadowed by his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a stayat-home mother who addressed party workers and public rallies
with ease and a comfort level that many have compared to that of her grandmother, Indira. The last time the family faced such a serious challenge was in the 1980s, when then-Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's government lost the 1989 elections, mainly due to charges that Swedish gun manufacturer Bofors AB paid bribes to supply Howitzer field guns to the Indian army. Despite the Gandhi family's waning popularity, it is premature to count them out entirely. The family, which has been likened to India's version of the British monarchy or America's Kennedy dynasty, is a subject of fascination in India. And the Gandhis' message of lifting the country's impoverished masses resonates deeply with many. "The Congress party is not going to disappear. The party has the vitality to reinvent itself. This could be a temporary setback," said Inder Malhotra, a journalist and author best known for his biography of Indira Gandhi. Still, he said, the party appears incapable of looking beyond the Gandhi family for leadership. "No Congress leader is ready to accept the leadership of any other Congress leader," he said. "Only a Gandhi, any Gandhi, will do."

This is beginning of new era: bJP
New Delhi, May 16 (ageNcies): Clearly buoyed by the massive win in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP said on Friday that it was the beginning of a new era. Addressing a press conference in the national capital, BJP president Rajnath Singh said that though he was very happy at the big win by the NDA, he was also aware of the responsibilities bestowed by the people on the party. “This is first time after 1984 that any party has got a majority on its own. This is people’s mandate for change,” Rajnath said, adding, “I believe that this mandate is also for Modi’s popularity.” Commenting on BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Rajnath said that the Gujarat CM had worked very hard. “He worked very hard along with other party workers. I do not think that any leader addressed so many rallies during the course of any campaign,” party president said. He added, “This is the beginning of a new era.” Talking about BJP’s poll campaign Rajnath said, “Our agenda was good gov-
ernance and development in these polls. The Opposition tried to divert the discourse elsewhere. However, we won because of our agenda and Modi’s dynamism, ” adding, “Modi has once again resorted the faith in politicians amongst the people.” The BJP president also said that the party’s track record of good governance was one of the reasons for their victory. “Time has come to rewrite the Indian success story,” Rajnath said while congratulating party workers and also the NDA allies. At the same time he emphasized the fact that the BJP was no longer a party of the urban class. “It is also now a party of the rural folks , the poor, the farmers, the tribals and so on,” he said. Rajnath said that the BJP would take everyone along in the growth and development of the country. He also congratulated the people of India for coming out to vote in huge numbers. On Cabinet formation Rajnath said that it was the PM’s prerogative. On party patriarch LK Advani’s role he said, “He is our top leader and like our guardian.”

We will take along everyone: Narendra Modi
VaDoDara, May 16 (iaNs): In his first comments after the BJP won the Lok Sabha election, party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi made it clear Friday that his government will take everyone along. "The government belongs to all the people of the country, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, from Kutch to Kamrup," Modi said days before he will be sworn
in as India's next prime minister."All the people of this country are ours," he added. "It is our responsibility to take everyone along. A government cannot be of just a few people," he added. "Our mantra will be inclusive growth." As Modi spoke in Hindi, he was repeatedly interrupted by thunderous cries of "Modi, Modi". He was forced to halt at times before
continuing with his talk. In an obvious message directed at the Congress, Modi said that now that the country's most bitterly fought general election had ended, "there are no enemies in politics". Describing himself as people's "mazdoor number one", he said: "The country will not get a mazdoor like me in the coming 60 months." Referring to the sweeping BJP win the
Gujarat chief minister said: "I am very grateful to the people of India." Modi said the Lok Sabha verdict was significant because a non-Congress party had gained parliamentary majority on its own for the first time in independent India. It will also be the first time that India will be run by a leadership born after the country's independence, he added.
Mayawati loses UP, Jaya wave gobbles up 37 of Tamil Nadu’s 39 LS seats BSP draws zero lucKNow, May 16 (iaNs): The Modi blitzkrieg Friday destroyed the BSP, leaving Mayawati, who once harboured hopes of becoming India’s first Dalit prime minister, without a single Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh. In a verdict that sent the BSP in mourning, not one of its candidates could claim victory despite hectic campaigning by Mayawati and two of her trusted lieutenants: Naseemuddin Siddiqui and Satish Chandra Mishra. The Bahujan Samaj Party won 20 Lok Sabha seats in 2009. But Election Commission data showed that the BSP had finished second in 33 of the 80 constituencies in the sprawling state. Having lost the 2012 assembly polls to arch rival Samajwadi party, the BSP was widely expected to bounce back in the Lok Sabha battle, largely owing to strong anti-incumbency against the Akhilesh Yadav government. The results, party leaders admitted, were most unexpected. “This is a body blow to us. We need to sit and do a post-mortem,” a senior outgoing BSP MP who lost
told IANS. But the writing was on the wall, and Mayawati had apparently read it in time. And the not-so-media savvy Mayawati addressed a flurry of pressers during the last 10 days of campaign, trying to make course corrections vis-avis the caste matrix and her captive Dalit vote bank. Aware that Dalits were being poached by BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Mayawati was jittery after the fourth phase when her feedback was that Dalits were flocking to Modi. Her second major constituency, Muslims, also failed to come to her rescue. The BSP fared badly in the 2012 assembly polls largely because Muslims deserted her. The same was repeated in the Lok Sabha ballot as many Muslim voters felt that the BSP could join hands with the BJP later. The BSP fielded 17 Dalit candidates, 15 Other Backward Class candidates, 19 Muslims, 21 Brahmins and eight Thakurs. But her rainbow coalition that clicked in the 2007 assembly election did not find enough takers this time.
Lalu Prasad’s wife and daughter lose election
PatNa, May 16 (iaNs): In an embarassment to RJD chief Lalu Prasad, his wife and former chief minister Rabri Devi and his daughter Misa Bharti lost their elections to the Lok Sabha from Saran and Patliputra parliamentary constsituencies respectively. Rabri Devi was defeated by Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Rajiv Pratap Rudy in Saran, while in Patliputra, Misa Bharti was defeated by BJP’s Ram Kirpal Yadav, a former RJD leader. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo had worked overtime in both constituencies for his wife and daughter as it was a prestige issue for him. mSaran is considered home turf for Lalu Prasad as he had won the Lok Sabha polls for the first time in 1977 from there. In the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, he won from Saran by over 50,000 votes. He was defeated in Patliputra in 2009 by over 10,000 votes by the Janata Dal(United), at that time an ally of the BJP.
cheNNai, May 16 (iaNs): Tamil Nadu’s ruling AIADMK Friday rode on a Jayalalithaa wave to gobble up 37 of the state’s 39 Lok Sabha seats to become one of the largest parties in the Lok Sabha. The wave was such that there will be no Congress or DMK representative from the state in the Lok Sabha for the next five years as things stand now. Many of the prominent candidates of these two parties as well as from others crashed to defeat. They included DMK’s A.Raja, Dayanidhi Maran, T.K.S.Elangovan, T.R. Baalu and Congress’ Karti P.Chidambaram, son of union finance minister P.Chidambaram, E.V.K.S.Elangovan and others. MDMK’s candidates including its leader Vaiko, candidates from the two communist parties and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also lost. However PMK’s Anbumani Ramadoss contesting from Dharmapuri and Bharatiya Janata Party’s Pon Radhakrishan from Kanyakumari were the two victorious survi-
vors. Both the parties are in alliance. Even as the initial trends started coming in, AIADMK party cadres started their victory celebrations at the party headquarters here. Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, who is also the AIADMK supremo, told reporters: “It is a historic, unparalleled, unprecedented victory without any alliance. I would like to thank all those who worked for the victory.” She also conveyed her best wishes to the BJP’s Narendra Modi, who is set to become the next prime minister, and said her party would act as a responsible political party. “We are the third largest party and we will act as a responsible political party,” she said, adding she hoped that the new government at the centre would be friendly towards Tamil Nadu. AIADMK leader C.Ponnaiyan told IANS that the results “are as per our expectations”. “In fact, we were sure of winning all the 39 seats. Further, this is also the first time the party fought the Lok Sabha elections on its own.”
According to him, the AIADMK government has implemented several welfare schemes that reached the poor which in turn has resulted in the party being victorious. DMK president M. Karunanidhi said he accepted his party’s defeat “with bowed head” but noted his party had seen “defeats and also mega victories earlier” too. He also conveyed his party’s wishes to Modi for the BJP’s “massive nationwide electoral victory”. The state unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) lauded all the victorious candidates. In a statement issued here, the CPI also hailed Jayalalithaa for her party’s victory. According to the Election Commission, the AIADMK had logged a vote share of 44 percent as compared to the DMK’s around 23 percent. A Congress member told IANS this is the first time that the state has not returned any Congress member to the Lok Sabha. Incidentally, the DMK will also be absent in the Lok Sabha this time around. Last time it had 18 members. “The AIADMK
has done extremely well. The party seems to have bettered its own expectations,” Ramu Manivannan, professor of political science in the University of Madras, told IANS. “People seem to agree with the views of Jayalalithaa on various issues advocated strongly by her like the Cauvery river water sharing, Mullaperiyar dam dispute with Kerala, attacks on Indian fishermen by Sri Lanka and others,” he said. Manivannan said the AIADMK may not be part of the new government at the centre, but Jayalalithaa will certainly be in a position to influence the policies of the new government. He said the DMK’s poor show may not be due to the infighting between M.K. Alagiri and M.K. Stalin, the sons of Karunanidhi. “The party has not fared well in northern Tamil Nadu where Alagiri has no influence. His influence is only confined to southern parts of the state,” Manivannan said. People feel the DMK has not espoused the state’s cause as strongly as Jayalalithaa has done, he said.
SC declines Centre’s plea on black money
New Delhi, May 16 (iaNs): The Supreme Court (SC) Friday declined to entertain the Centre’s plea seeking recall of its order for setting up of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the stashing away of black money in foreign banks and bringing it back to India. The apex court bench of Justice B.S. Chauhan and Justice A.K. Sikri declined the Centre’s plea saying: “How can we sit on the judgment of other judges?” The court said this as Additional Solicitor General Siddharth Luthra sought the recall of the July 4, 2011, judgment of the apex court,
and March 26 and May 1, 2014, orders of the court. “How can we? Even if one of the judges (Justice B. Sudarshan Reddy) has retired,” the court said asking Luthra to talk to registry which in turn will speak to the judges currently seized of the matter. Appearing for petitioner Ram Jethmalani, counsel Sandeep Kapoor opposed the government plea saying the matter was being heard by a three-judge bench which has earlier declined a similar plea by the Centre. The July 4, 2011, order was passed on a petition by Jethmalani seeking in-
vestigation into the flight of unaccounted money to tax havens and bringing it back. On March 26, the court turned down the Centre’s plea seeking the recall of the court’s July 4, 2011 order setting up a SIT headed by its two former judges to monitor investigations into stashing away of the black money in tax havens. On July 4, 2011, the apex court had set up an SIT under the chairmanship of former SC judge Justice B.P. Jeevan Reddy and Justice M.B. Shah. But, according to its March 26, 2014 order, the court, while declining the Centre’s plea, said the SIT probe into flight of
black money to tax havens would go on. By its May 1, 2014 order, the apex court has appointed Justice (retd) M.B. Shah as chairman of the SIT in place of Justice (retd) Jeevan Reddy who expressed his inability to undertake the task due to personal reasons. The March 26 and May 1 orders were passed by the apex court bench of Justice H.L. Dattu, Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai and Justice Madan B. Lokur. The July 4, 2011 court order said the SIT would submit periodic status reports to keep the apex court informed of all major developments.
Cong at the mercy of Speaker to get opposition leader status
New Delhi, May 16 (tNN): The worst ever performance by the Congress in the Lok Sabha election has reduced it to such a level that the party may even lose the status of opposition in Lok Sabha. Though it still has the highest numerical strength among all opposition parties, its tally does not constitute the one-tenth strength (54) of the Lok Sabha — making it ineligible for being considered as the party whose member can be a leader of the opposition. This situation will, on the other hand, give a free run to the govern-
ment where it mandatorily requires the opinion of the opposition leader while making key appointments in the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), Lokpal and CBI. Eminent constitutional expert and former secretary-general of the Lok Sabha Subhash C Kashyap told TOI that no party would qualify to be as opposition leader as none of them had won the minimum 10% (54) of the Lok Sabha seats. “There will be different opposition parties in the new Lok Sabha. Each party will have their own leader.
But none of them would be recognized as opposition leader who qualifies to get perks, salaries and allowances that are the same as a Cabinet minister under the existing rule,” Kashyap said. Asked about different panels which require to be represented by leader of opposition of the Lok Sabha, Kashyap said the government will have to first change the rules by making required amendments for the provisions of such search panels. “If the government wishes it can keep that position in the panel vacant and go ahead with the appointments by changing
the rules,” he said — an indication that the government would have a free run in such appointments if it wishes to keep the position vacant. Though the leader of the largest opposition party, irrespective of the number, can get such status for representing those search panels, it will entirely depend on the speaker of the House under a rule for recognizing a parliamentary group which allows him or her to recognize “an association of members to form a parliamentary group” if it will have a minimum strength of 30 members. Accordingly, P Upen-
dra of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) was the leader of opposition during 198489. The TDP had then only bagged 30 seats 3 less than the 10% of the total strength — but it was the largest political party in the opposition. The lower house of the Parliament did not have a leader of the opposition during 1952-1977. After the loss of Congress in 1977 elections post-emergency, the Lok Sabha had got its first leader of the opposition that year under the Salary and Allowances of Leaders of Opposition in Parliament Act, 1977. As per the Act, “Leader of the Opposition”, in either
Rajya Sabha or Lok Sabha, may be, a person who is, for the time being, the leader in that house of the party in opposition having the greatest numerical strength and recognized as such by the chairman of the upper house or the Speaker of the lower house, as the case may be. Where there are two or more parties in opposition having the same numerical strength, the chairman or the Speaker, as the case may be, will have to recognize any one of the leaders of such parties as the “Leader of the Opposition” and such recognition will be final and conclusive.
New Delhi, May 16 (iaNs): Leaders of several countries Friday congratulated Narendra Modi, set to become India’s next prime minister, for leading the BJP to a decisive win in the general elections. Heads of government of Britain, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Australia and Israel sent congratulatory messages to Modi as the results were declared. British Prime Minister called up Modi and conveyed his greetings to Narendra Modi.“The prime minister called Narendra Modi this morning to congratulate him on his victory in the Indian elections and the record turnout, making this the biggest democratic election in history,” a Downing Street spokesperson said. “Modi said he would be delighted to accept the Prime Minister’s invitation to visit the UK. Both leaders agreed on the importance of the UK-India relationship and agreed to work together to strengthen it in the months ahead.” Cameron also used his Twitter handle to convey his greetings. “Congratula-
tions @narendramodi on victory in India’s elections. Keen to work together to get the most from UK-India relationship,” Cameron tweeted in his official 10, Downing Street, account. Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif too Friday congratulated Modi for winning the Indian general election. Sharif telephoned Modi and expressed his best wishes, Radio Pakistan reported. Stating that he had followed the general elections closely, he also invited Modi to visit Pakistan. Afghan President Hamid Karzai also congratulated Modi for leading the BJP to victory. “President #Karzai extends his warm Congratulations to @narendramodi on victory in elections. Afghans always regard #India as a true friend,” Aimal Faizi, spokesperson to the president, tweeted Friday. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina congratulated BJP president Rajnath Singh and Modi for the party’s landslide victory in the elections. In separate letters to the BJP president and Modi, she invited them to visit Bangladesh at the earliest.
Manmohan to give farewell address, resignation Saturday New Delhi, May 16 (iaNs): On his last day in office Saturday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will give a farewell address to the nation at 10 a.m. on state-run Doordarshan before he goes to meet President Pranab Mukherjee to hand in his resignation. Manmohan Singh, the 13th prime minister of India, has helmed the United Progressive Alliance government through its two successive terms from 2004. The prime minister Friday congratulated Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi for leading his party to victory in the Lok Sabha election. Manmohan Singh had in January said that Modi becoming prime minister would be a “disaster” for the country. Modi is set to succeed Manmohan Singh as the country’s 14th prime minister. “Prime Minister Manmohan Singh calls Narendra Modi and congratulated him on his party’s victory in the Lok Sabha elections,” according to a message on the twitter handle of the Prime Minister’s Office. On Saturday, the Election Commission will formally announce the results to the president. After his address to the nation on Doordarshan, the prime minister will meet his cabinet for the last time when he will thank his ministerial colleagues. He is then to drive straight down to Rashtrapati Bhavan to hand in his resignation at noon. “PM will make an address to the nation tomorrow. After EC announces results. Then thank his cabinet. Then go to meet president to tender his resignation around noon,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a communication.
Only today’s Chanakya got exit poll figures right New Delhi, May 16 (iaNs): Except for Today’s Chanakya, none of the organisations that conducted exit polls were able to correctly predict the final tallies of the BJP or the Congress in the Lok Sabha election. Times Now-ORG, Headlines Today-Cicero, ABP News-Nielsen, India TV-Cvoter, CNN IBN-CSDS and News24-Today’s Chanakya conducted exit polls. While all predicted a BJP-led government at the centre, none except Today’s Chanakya was able to correctly project the tally of the BJP and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Times Now-ORG gave 257 seats to the NDA and 135 to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) while Headlines Today-Cicero gave 272 seats to the BJPled pre-poll coalition and 115 seats to the Congress-led coalition. CNN IBN-CSDS, ABP News-Nielsen and Cvoter-India TV gave 276, 281 and 289 seats to the NDA while giving 97, 97, and 101 seats to the UPA. Only Today’s Chanakya gave 340 seats to the NDA and 70 seats to the UPA, which matched the tally of the two coalitions. According to figures given by Election Commission of India, the NDA romped home on 335 seats whereas the UPA won 61 seats. Manindra Thakur, professor of political science at JNU said exit polls “underestimated the BJP and NDA this time. They could not catch the trend”. nAsked why, he said being a big country, it was difficult for exit polls in India to get the sampling right which made them often “over-estimate or under-estimate the electoral performance of a party. It is like a gamble”.
Trinamool juggernaut rolls on in Bengal, Left nearly wiped out KolKata, May 16 (iaNs): West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress put up a spectacular show, sweeping the Lok Sabha polls in the state to emerge as the fourth-largest party in the new Lok Sabha, while the BJP signalled its rise as a force by eating into the vote share of the Left Front which was nearly wiped out. The Congress, however, put up a stubborn fight to hold on its pockets of strength in the state. Of the state’s 42 seats, the Trinamool picked up 34, recording its best performance as it nearly doubled its 19 seat tally of 2009. However, while five years back, the Trinamool had an alliance with the Congress, this time it fought the polls alone. The Trinamool’s strength in the Lok Sabha would be after the Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress and the AIADMK. The Congress won four seats, while the BJP and the Left front spearhead Communist Party of India-Marxist collected two each. For the Left, the 2014 general elections witnessed its worst show in the state after Independence, and for the Left Front, the most pathetic performance since its formation in 1977. Not only did its vote share drop to 29.3 percent from 43.3 percent in 2009, but it even finished third in half a dozen seats.

Turkish mining company denies negligence
Grief and rage as Turkey buries mine disaster dead
People carry a woman who collapsed during the funeral of a mine accident victim in Soma, Turkey on May 15. An explosion and fire at a coal mine in Soma, some 250 kilometers (155 miles) south of Istanbul, killed hundreds of workers, authorities said, in one of the worst mining disasters in Turkish history.(AP Photo)
SOMA, MAy 16 (AP): Senior Turkish officials denied allegations of lax government oversight and a Turkish mining company defended its safety record Friday, four days after at least 284 people died in an underground blaze at a coal mine in western Turkey. A maximum of 18 miners remain missing and the final death toll will be around 300, the country’s energy minister said. Until now it had been feared that there might be more than 100 victims still in the mine. The mining company’s owner, Alp Gurkan,
said he had spent his own money on improving standards at the mine at Soma in western Turkey. “I am hurting inside,” he said at a news conference of company officials. Turkey’s worst mining disaster has set off a raft of protests amid public outrage at allegedly poor safety conditions at Turkish coal mines, widespread corruption and what some perceived as government indifference. “It’s not an accident, it’s murder,” read a banner waved by trade unionists who marched through the streets of Istanbul on Thurs-
day. The public anger has stirred up new hostility toward Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government, which was already sharply criticized for last summer’s brutal response to protesters in Istanbul’s Taksim square and its crackdown earlier this year on social media. Responding to the outcry, Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said Friday that anyone found to have been negligent about safety at the mine can expect punishment. “If they are at fault, no tolerance will be shown regardless of whether they
are from the public or private sector,” he said. Huseyin Celik, a deputy leader of Erdogan’s ruling party, also defended the government’s record. “We have no inspection and supervision problem,” he said. “This mine was inspected vigorously 11 times since 2009.” Celik urged people to move on from the disaster. “Let’s learn from this pain and rectify our mistakes. The private sector and the public sector will draw lessons,” he said. “This is not the time to look for a scapegoat.” The chief prosecutor in the nearby city of Akhisar said
SOMA, MAy 16 (AP): With photos of their loved ones pinned to their chests and chanting the names of lost miners, grieving relatives laid their dead to rest in mass burials Thursday, as gravediggers labored to make room for scores more victims of Turkey’s worst mining disaster. “The love of my life is gone,” women wailed loudly, swaying and singing improvised laments about the departed as bodies were lowered, one by one, into the freshly dug graves. Rage blended with grief as revulsion over poor safety conditions and what some perceived as government indifference set off protests across Turkey. “It’s not an accident, it’s murder,” read a banner waved by trade unionists who marched through the streets of Istanbul. The disaster has stirred up new hostility toward Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s govern-
ment and thrown his presidential ambitions off stride. Blackening his reputation further, Turkish newspapers published a photograph Thursday of one of Erdogan’s aides kicking a protester who was being held on the ground by armed police. At a graveyard in the mining town of Soma, where coal has been the main industry for decades, mourners said they spent their whole lives fearing a disaster like Tuesday’s, in which an explosion set off a deadly fire just as workers were preparing for a shift change, trapping hundreds underground. No miner has been brought out alive since before dawn Wednesday. “The wives of the miners kiss their husbands in the morning. When they come back, even if they are five minutes late, everyone starts calling, said 45-yearold Gulizar Donmez, whose husband and father are both miners and whose
neighbor was among the victims. “You never know what is going to happen.” Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said the search for survivors was being hampered by a fire that had spread to a conveyor system — engulfing a 650-foot (200-meter) stretch of tunnel — but progress was made Thursday toward extinguishing it. Rescue operations have been suspended several times as fire created toxic fumes and too-risky conditions for rescuers. Emergency crews detected a drop in carbon monoxide levels “which means that the fire has gotten smaller,” Yildez said. Erdogan, who is expected to announce his candidacy soon for Turkey’s presidential election in August, was greeted by angry protests during a visit to Soma on Wednesday after he referred to mining accidents as “ordinary things” that “happen all the time.” The Turkish leader was
forced to take refuge inside a supermarket after angry crowds shouting “Murderer!” and “Thief!” — in a reference to alleged corruption — clashed with police. An Erdogan aide, Yusuf Yerkel,” was photographed kicking a protester being pinned to the ground by special forces police. Yerkel issued a statement Thursday expressing regret, but also claimed he was provoked. “I am sorry that I was not able to keep calm despite all the provocations, insults and attacks that I was subjected to,” he said. In contrast, Turkish President Abdullah Gul, visiting Soma on Thursday, referred to the mine explosion as “a huge disaster,” adding: “The pain is felt by us all.” The mood was more restrained than during Erdogan’s visit, though townspeople angry at what they said was the slow rescue operation shouted at him, demanding that more be done to reach possible survivors.
prosecutors assigned to the case had begun interviewing some of the injured miners and other witnesses. The mining company said the exact cause of the accident is still not known but denied any wrongdoing. “There is no negligence,” said Soma mine engineer Akin Celik. “I have been doing this job for 20 years but I have never seen anything like this. We would not want harm to come to a single fingernail of our workers.” Ramazan Dogru, the mine’s general manager, rejected initial reports that the fire was caused by an explosion
at a power distribution unit. “It was caused by an undetermined spark,”Dogru said. “We believe that the fire grew because there was an entry of clean air there.” The mine officials said the mine had one safe room which was later made obsolete. The company was making preparations to build a second one when the accident occurred. Gurkan said that according to Turkish mining laws, however, safe rooms are not a legal requirement. Turkey’s Labor and Social Security Ministry says the mine’s most recent inspection was in March, when
no safety violations were detected. But the country’s opposition party said Erdogan’s ruling party had voted down a proposal to hold a parliamentary inquiry into several smaller accidents at mines around Soma. The energy minister’s comments suggested that no one else was expected to come out alive from the mine, where 284 miners are confirmed dead, mostly from carbon monoxide poisoning. “We believe that there are no more than 18 worker brothers inside the mine,” Yildiz told reporters. He said that number
is based on reports from families and data provided by the company. “We have 284 losses, 18 brothers inside and 77 million people hurting,” Yildiz said, giving the last figure in reference to Turkey’s population. Yildiz said a fire is still burning inside the mine, spreading noxious fumes, but that “it is declining.” Grieving relatives laid their dead to rest in mass burials Thursday, with photos of their loved ones pinned to their chests and chanting the names of lost miners. More funerals were planned for Friday.
Global life expectancy rises again
FINAL RESULT SHEET
Election to the House of the People( Lok Sabha) from 1- Nagaland Parliamentary Constituency PART-II gEnEVA, MAy 16 (RE- both sexes. Lifestyle changes and respiratory infections, expectancy for a 60-yearutERS): Average life expectancy has risen globally to 73 years for a girl born in 2012 and 68 for a boy following successes in fighting diseases and child mortality, the World Health Organization said on Thursday. Big advances in the battles against infectious diseases such as measles, malaria, tuberculosis and polio have continued to extend life expectancy although other factors, such as people’s lifestyles, are constraining longevity, the WHO said in its annual statistics report. The longest life expectancy at birth is for baby girls in Japan, at 87.0 years, and boys in Iceland, at 81.2 years. Japan, Switzerland, Singapore, Italy and Luxembourg rank in the top 10 for both sexes. “There are major gains in life expectancy in recent decades and they continue,” said Ties Boerma, chief of statistics and information systems at the WHO. The lowest life expectancy is in sub-Saharan Africa, where nine countries have expectancy of less than 55 for babies of
leading to heart problems and other diseases were curbing life expectancy in some cases. “We’re seeing a health transition from success in infectious diseases to more people dying, including at younger ages, from noncommunicable diseases,” said Boerma. However, even in the rich countries where people live longest, there is no sign of life expectancy gains slowing down. “If human life expectancy was capped at population level at around 90 years of life we would expect to see a slowdown as we approach those limits. We’re not seeing that,” said Colin Mathers, coordinator of WHO’s statistics on mortality. For the first time the annual statistics report, the most comprehensive statistical overview of the world’s health, measured “years of life lost”, a number that takes account of the age when people die as well as the number of deaths, to put more focus on the things that kill more people at a younger age. the biggest causes of early deaths in 2000, had fallen by 40 percent and 30 percent respectively by 2012, when ischaemic heart disease was the biggest factor in early deaths. Years of life lost to road injuries have also increased by 14 percent between 2000 and 2012 as more people driving in developing countries outweighed gains in road safety elsewhere.
CARDiOVASCuLAR DiSEASE Life expectancy at birth has increased in almost every country since 1990, and in almost all cases it was higher in 2012 than in 2011, with Botswana, Cote d’Ivoire and Syria among the exceptions. Another was Pakistan, where life expectancy averaged 65 years in 2012, down from 67 years in last year’s report. Mathers said that reduction reflected improved data, which revealed child mortality was 30 percent higher than previously thought. The global average life
old has also increased, with hope of another 20 years in 2012 instead of 18 years in 1990. But not everywhere. In Russia and several other former Soviet states, life expectancy for a 60-year-old was lower in 2012 than in 1990. Mathers said death rates rose fast in the early 1990s, due to cardiovascular disease and injury, both influenced by high rates of binge drinking. Although the death rates have since improved, they have not yet dropped to pre-1990 levels. Russia’s experience surprised epidemiologists who had expected chronic diseases would take a long time to take root. Many countries, especially those recovering from conflict, have also shown that it is possible to make big gains fast. “We’ve seen in many countries a catch-up, really fast progress,” said Boerma. “Examples - Liberia, which has been our fastest catch-up country, but also Rwanda, Cambodia. So if they come out of a crisis with good leadership, there’s enormous progress in health.”

Pacers clinch series with win over Wizards Thunder shows Clippers the door
Pacers to meet Heat in Eastern Conference finals
WASHINGTON, MAy 16 (AP): For all their mysterious slumps and chemistry curiosities, the Indiana Pacers are back where they were last season — in the Eastern Conference finals. David West scored 29 points Thursday night, and the Pacers blew a 16-point second-half lead before pulling away late in a 93-80 win that ousted the Washington Wizards in six games. Next up, a rematch with the Miami Heat. Lance Stephenson added 17 points and eight assists for the Pacers, who earned a Game 1 at home against the two-time defending NBA champions on Sunday. Indiana took Miami to seven games in the conference finals a year ago. "We've been through it all this season," Stephenson said. "And I feel like everything that we went through made us stronger." Marcin Gortat scored 19 points, and John Wall had 12 points and nine assists for the Wizards, who ended their best playoff run in decades. Washington won a playoff series for the first time since 2005 and a second-round game for the first time since 1982. But the team was ultimately undone by an inability to win at home, going just 1-4 at the Verizon Center and 5-1 on the road in the playoffs. "I think we all felt we had an opportunity here to do more than we did, and that's a good feeling for those guys," Washington coach Randy Wittman said. "They're hurting in there, and when you hurt, that means you care." The Wizards appeared to have a fix on the homecourt demons when Bradley Beal stole a rebound

from Roy Hibbert, then hit a 3-pointer at the other end to put the Wizards up 74-73 with 8½ minutes to play. But that was Washington's only lead of the second half. West answered with a pair of jumpers, including a tough fade-away, and Stephenson added a layup to start a decisive 20-6 run that included three Wizards turnovers in four possessions. Washington went five minutes without a point and scored only two field goals after Beal's go-ahead 3. The Pacers were on 33-7 on Jan. 20 and 46-13 on March 2 before limping to the finish line, barely hold-
ing on to the conference's No. 1 seed. Things didn't look much better when Indy was pushed to seven games in the first round by eighthseeded Atlanta, or when the Pacers lost Game 1 at home to the Wizards. But Hibbert revived himself in Game 2, the defense held the Wizards to 63 points in Game 3, and Paul George went off for 39 points in Game 4. The ugly Pacers returned in a 23-point beatdown at home in Game 5. "It was a poor basketball game all the way around in Game 5, and nobody was happy about it," Indiana coach Frank Vogel
said. "And they came out and played angry." But they pulled ahead early in the clincher by shooting 59 percent in the first half and holding the up-tempo Wizards without a fast-break point until the second half. The Wizards had to reschedule a Lady Gaga concert to host the game, upsetting the singer's fans and prompting an apology from team owner Ted Leonsis. Instead of Little Monsters in the arena, there were big ones — such as a 4½-minute field goal drought in the second period that helped the Pacers to a 52-40 halftime lead.
Wall, who broke out of a shooting and leadership slump in Game 5, had moments that were more reckless than sublime in the first half. He was 2 for 6 from the field at the break, while Beal was 3 for 10. The Wizards were 1 for 7 from 3-point range, and only the inside presence of Nene and Gortat kept it close. The Pacers got the lead to 16, but the Wizards answered with an 11-2 run capped by Wall's 1-on-3 transition layup, Washington's first fast-break basket. Wall was particularly assertive at the start of the fourth quarter, but the Pacers' defense held firm when it mattered.
LOS ANGELES, MAy 16 (AP): Kevin Durant had 39 points and 16 rebounds, and the Oklahoma City Thunder advanced to the Western Conference finals with a 104-98 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 6 on Thursday night. Russell Westbrook overcame a slow start to finish with 19 points and 12 assists as the Thunder reached the conference finals for the third time in four years, closing out Los Angeles with two straight wins. Two days after the Thunder erased a late 13-point deficit to win Game 5, the Thunder rallied from an early 16-point deficit and maintained their lead throughout the fourth quarter, shaking off any memories of their Game 4 collapse. Chris Paul had 25 points and 11 assists, and Blake Griffin scored 22 points as the Clippers' exhausting postseason ended in disappointment. Durant hit five 3-pointers and Reggie Jackson added 14 points for Oklahoma City, which will face the Spurs in a rematch of the West's last two champions. The series begins Monday night in San Antonio. J.J. Redick scored 16 points for the Clippers, who followed their epic collapse in Game 5 with a disappointing second half at home. Despite a raucous home crowd, Los Angeles won't play for its first trip to a conference finals. Perhaps the cumulative pressure of two playoff series amid the distractions of owner Donald Sterling's lifetime ban finally cost the Clippers, who couldn't keep up late. Or perhaps Durant is just that good. The Clippers were in control for most of

Atletico, Barca primed for Spanish title decider
MADRID, MAy 16 (AP): Atletico Madrid face Barcelona at the Camp Nou with both teams vying for the Spanish league title. Atletico leads Barcelona by three points in the standings, and only victory will see defending champion Barcelona lift their fifth trophy in six seasons and deny Atletico its first league championship in 18 years. Atletico knows a draw will suffice in winning its first league title since 1996. Four out of five matches between the sides have ended in a draw this season, with Atletico claiming a narrow 1-0 win in the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal. "The whole season comes down to 90 minutes," said Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta. Here are five things to know about Saturday's game:
SEASON FINALE, 64 YEARS LATER Saturday's matchup is only the third time in league history the title has been decided in circumstances such as these. And both Atletico and Barcelona were involved then too. Atletico edged Sevilla in a final round decider to close the
1950/51 season — five years after Sevilla emerged triumphant against Barcelona in a similar showdown. "We can't look to the past, we need to focus on the present," Atletico captain Gabi Fernandez said. "We have a historic opportunity to win the league and the Champions League also." Atletico, which plays Real Madrid in the Champions League final on May 24, hasn't competed for the title since its league-cup double triumph in 1995/96.
esta said. "We would celebrate like never before." BARCA'S MOTIVATION You would hardly think Barcelona was still in the fight for the title after a look at its recent results. It has drawn its last two matches against relegation-threatened opponents and, inbetween those results, organized a team barbecue that looked more like an end-of-season, summer send-off. "No one would have thought we'd have this opportunity again after we drew at home to Getafe, you'd be crazy to think it," midfielder Xavi Hernandez. "Why wouldn't we deserve the league," midfielder Andres Iniesta said. Barcelona is still waiting on the fitness of defenders Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba, while question marks remain over Neymar's return with the Brazil striker having been sidelined nearly one month, and this would be his last club game before preparing for the World Cup.
DENTING THE DUOPOLY Atletico is on the cusp of becoming the first winner besides Barcelona or Real Madrid to win the title since Valencia did it in 2004. "Whoever manages to distance themselves from all the talk off the field in the buildup will have a better game," said Atletico coach Diego Simoene, who is likely to wait until game time to decide on the availability of injured striker Diego Costa. Barcelona vowed to dedicate the league to former coach Tito Vilanova, who died last month. "It MARTINO'S LAST STAND would be brutal if we manWin or lose the league, age to win this league on coach Gerardo Martino's the last day at home," Ini- future with Barcelona does

not look bright. The Argentine coach has had to put up with reports about his future all season long, and even if he manages to steer the club to victory on Saturday it likely won't stop the apparent arrival of Celta Vigo coach and former player Luis Enrique from taking over his job next season. Martino's reported exit won't be the only one: Barcelona will be saying goodbye to many of the core
players that shaped the club over recent years with Carles Puyol and Victor Valdes exiting. Meanwhile, Daniel Alves and Javier Mascherano are some of the players whose futures may also be away from the Catalan club next season. RELEGATION ARRIVES While Atletico and Barcelona play for the title, five teams at the other of the table will be playing
for survival. Almeria, Getafe, Granada, Osasuna, and Real Valladolid are all flirting with the second division, with two of them certain to drop alongside last-place Real Betis. Valladolid hosts Granada while Betis is at Osasuna. Also, Real Madrid's last match ahead of the Champions League final in Lisbon is Saturday against Espanyol as it finishes the season third in the standings.

the first three quarters. But the league MVP kept the Thunder close and eventually ignited a 30-10 run stretching across the final two quarters. Westbrook, who didn't have a field goal until late in the third quarter, contributed 10 points in the fourth as the Thunder comfortably maintained their lead. The fans' frustration boiled over after an offensive foul call against Griffin with 3:11 to play. During the ensuing timeout, fans threw at least two drinks at referee Ed Malloy, causing a slight delay while the floor was cleaned. Griffin fouled out with 2:27 left, but the Clippers got within four points in the final minute before Westbrook and Durant hit free
throws to close it out. The loss ended a tumultuous postseason for the Clippers, who managed to win a seven-game series with Golden State in the first round even while Sterling was banned from the NBA for life for racist comments exposed during that series. Oklahoma City smoothly secured its spot in the conference finals after these teams traded spectacular collapses in the last two games. The Thunder blew a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter of Game 4 at Staples Center, but the Clippers responded by blowing a 13-point lead in the final four minutes in Oklahoma City.
Will Lionel Messi be able to enhance his legacy?
BARcELONA, MAy 16 (AFP): Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has already won everything he can at club level and on an individual basis. But the World Cup gnaws at him. World Player of the Year awards, six La Liga titles, three Champions Leagues and a mountain of goal scoring records only begin to tell the tale of the extraordinary career of a player who is still only 26. However, there is one thing missing from Messi's trophy cabinet; a major international triumph with Argentina. Messi has made his name with Barcelona, who spotted him as an 11-year-old and agreed to pay the $900 a month for his growth hormone treatment if he moved to Spain. The rest is history. Messi has grown into greatness and says he is ready to finish his career at Barcelona. But while nobody disputes the global drawing power of the Champions League, a title on the world stage is the one achievement that continues to separate Messi from the game's all-time greats such as Diego Maradona and Pele. This will be Messi's third World Cup. In 2006 as a raw 18-year-old he scored his only goal in the competition so far, but was not given much chance to shine by Argentina coach Jose Pekerman. He did not even make it off the bench as Argentina succumbed to hosts Germany on penalties in the quarterfinals. Four years later in South Africa, at the same stage and against the same opponents, the circumstances were far different. Messi arrived at the tournament with a reputation and showed it too as, without finding the net, he led an Argentine side under Maradona's tutelage through the early stages in fine style. However, Germany counter-attacked to
perfection in the last eight to hammer Maradona's unbalanced side overladen with offensive talent 4-0 in Cape Town. This time, despite Argentina's undoubted strength in attack, coach Alejandro Sabella appears to have found a semblance of equilibrium as they emerged top of an extremely strong South American qualification process. The key, though, will still be whether Messi can bring his best form to the biggest stage and dispel any doubts that he is one of the greatest players of all time. Comparisons with Maradona's crowning glory in leading Argentina to their second World Cup in 1986 are hard to ignore. Maradona was 25, in the prime of his career at the top of the European game with Napoli. Messi will turn 27 during the tournament and given his side's relatively soft draw through the early stages, will surely never get a better opportunity to end his country's 28-year wait for a third world title. "Messi doesn't need to win a World Cup to be the best footballer in the world," Maradona claimed in a recent interview with Argentine newspaper La Nacion. "To win a World Cup would be amazing for Argentina, for the fans and for Leo. But a World Cup more or less will not take away any of the merit of what he has done to get to where he is." However, history tends to judge those who succeed in World Cups more favourably. Alfredo di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas and Johan Cruyff all had arguably better club careers, but are regularly placed below Pele or Maradona in polls of the greatest of all time. Messi's legacy would be richly enhanced by lifting the famous gold trophy in enemy territory in Rio de Janeiro on July 13.

‘One hundred percent fictional!’ Selena Gomez was never pregnant with Justin Bieber’s baby, rep says
A
representative for Selena Gomez has denied the singer was ever pregnant. On Wednesday it was reported that the 21-yearold had miscarried after falling pregnant with thenboyfriend Justin Bieber. InTouch claimed the Come & Get It songstress had fallen pregnant in 2012 and took it as a sign that she and Justin ‘should be together forever’. However, late on Wednesday, a representative for the star shot down the story telling Us Weekly the report was ‘100 percent fictional’. InTouch had reported that the singer was initially shocked that she was pregnant in 2012 but was adamant she was going to keep the baby just like her mother, Mary Cornett, did when she fell pregnant at just 16. According to the report, the Disney star thought she was ready just like her own mother and Justin’s, both
of whom were teen moms. A source told InTouch: ‘Selena’s pregnancy wasn’t planned and she was really young but she didn’t care. ‘She was so in love with Justin. She wanted to keep the baby. She was convinced it was a sign that she and Justin should be together forever. Justin did not, however according to magazine, feel the same way. The friend told InTouch: ‘He didn’t want to be a father and was shell shocked when Selena told him she was pregnant. ‘He was in no way ready to have a child and had no idea that Selena would want to keep his baby and spend the rest her life with him. He got spooked.’ The magazine also reported the Baby singer’s team felt a child would ruin Justin’s reputation - especially if he was not involved in bringing it up. But just two months after allegedly falling pregnant, the magazine
said Selena lost the child. ‘[Justin] did his best, for a teenager, to comfort her, but she knew he didn’t want the baby and that he now felt unburdened. So that hurt her more. She felt alone. While the couple remain on and off - they were last seen together in Indio, California, in April at the Coachella music festival - InTouch said the miscarriage was a ‘turning point’ on both their relationship and Selena’s life. ‘She went into a complete downward spiral. Sage knew that the one chance of a lifetime connection with Justin was gone.’ The magazine said the Disney star tried to party away her pain and it eventually led to her deciding to seek treatment in earlier this year in an Arizonian rehab facility. Selena’s representative also denied this to Us Weekly, saying the star’s decision to enter the teenager who took a facility was to ‘get herself photo of a Michael back together’. Jackson impersonator was stunned - after spotting a picture of what looks like Michael Jackson’s ghost in the background. Reece Savva, 14, from Bromley, Kent, took three snaps of the Jackson tribute act as he waited in line for a signature. But when he got home and looked at t h e p i cture s he noticed what a p pears - sort of, if you squint - to be the ghost of the late entertainer hovering above his impersonator’s head in one of the frames. Reece went to the Churchill Theatre with his family to watch a Michael Jackson live tribute show. He said: ‘It was so eerie.

Rihanna accused of cyber-bullying a Fan Online
R
ihanna has been accused of cyber-bullying a teenage fan after appearing to mock the youngster for recreating a winged outfit the R&B star wore to a music prize giving in 2010 for her prom. Alexis Carter was inspired by the Alexandre Vauthier jumpsuit Rihanna donned at the 2010 Echo Awards in Germany and had a family friend help her design a similar ensemble for her Hollywoodthemed school dance. The proud Baltimore, Maryland teen posted snaps of herself in the black onepiece online, but the reaction she got on social networking sites like Twitter and Instagram.com was not quite what
the 16 year old had expected. She was left even more distraught by the negative feedback from Rihanna, who appeared to laugh at her efforts by posting a side-by-side shot comparing the Diamonds hitmaker’s red carpet outfit to Carter’s, alongside a caption which simply featured a sad face. In a second tweet, Rihanna compared the teen’s ensemble to the logo of rap crew the Wu-Tang Clan. The upset youngster tells Fox News in Baltimore, I was very offended. Why throw shade on it when you had on the exact same thing. The poses was (sic) different but the outfit wasn’t. She doesn’t love her fans like she says she does.

There w a s n o t h ing there at all when I was waiting in line. ‘I have no idea what happened on that one picture, but it’s terrifying. It was like something out of Thriller. ‘It’s like he just popped his head in to see what was going on and then left. I never used to believe in ghosts, but now I’m not so sure.’ His mother Angela, 54, added: ‘The image is so clear. I was there and I can adamantly say that there were no mirrors, no trick-
ery, nothing like that at all. ‘Sometimes you can see these things in photos, it is an image of something but you are almost willing it to be something else. ‘But you look at that and it is clearly a face and it does look like Michael Jackson. And the fact it was a Michael Jackson event and there he was makes it all the more eerie. ‘Although, I think if he did come back from the dead, he probably wouldn’t go to watch an impersonator.’ In the photo, Jackson’s ghost is seemingly peering over the shoulder of a Michael Jackson impersonator, perhaps trying to see what he is writing.
Heidi Klum split with Martin Kirsten as he was ‘sick of being a house-husband’ Heidi Klum has been rocked by claims that she allegedly put her career and money before the needs of her ex-partner. The German model had been enjoying an 18 month relationship with her bodyguard, Martin Kirsten, until they suddenly split in January this year. However a friend of Kirsten claims he ended their romance because he was ‘sick of being a house-husband.’ ‘He went from having a successful security career to playing Mr. Mom,’ his pal told Ra-
dar Online. ‘He did everything for the children, from dropping them off at school to putting them to bed at night. He loved the kids, but it was a lot to take on.’ MailOnline has contacted a representative for Heidi Klum for comment, and is awaiting a response. The friend claims that while Heidi, 40, would be working out of town, Martin, 41, looked after her four children with ex-husband Seal— Leni, 10, Henri, 8, Johan, 7, and Lou, 4 all week. The friend claims
the America’s Got Talent judge cried when he ended things, ‘Martin thought she looked so beautiful when she cried. He thought Heidi was a lovely person, but she just wasn’t around. ‘She put work and earning money ahead of him and the kids. He had to do what was best for him and end the personal and professional relationship.’ The South African is reportedly ‘heartbroken’ despite ending the relationship which his pal is adamant started after she
split from her Seal, 51, in 2012. However, it seems that Heidi’s tears have dried up though as she was recently seen getting very friendly with NYC with art dealer Vito Schnabel, 27, in Mexico. Vito, the son of famed artist-filmmaker Julian Schnabel, and the mom of four were first linked in February after they were spotted kissing at Bootsy Bellows in Hollywood around Valentine’s Day, as reported by Us Weekly.

VJ Andy files police complaint for mental abuse

uperstar Shah Rukh Khan has been ruling the silver screen for more than two decades and he says he enjoys being in the public eye and wants no privacy. The 48-year-old actor has appeared in more than 50 Hindi films including several hits like `Baazigar`, `Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge`, `Dil To Pagal Hai`, `Veer Zara` `Swades` and `Jab Tak Hain Jaan`. I am happy with my fame: I would miss leaving my house and not having people waiting for me, I would miss people waving to me, I am happy being loved. I want no privacy; I shamelessly want to be a star, I think it`s the most beautiful thing to be, Shah Rukh said at an award ceremony organised by Forbes Middle East to acknowledge the Top Indian Leaders in the Arab World. I am so happy that people don`t give me time to have lunch alone! I would rather have all this. Given the choice I would do it all over again, he added. Shah Rukh took to the stage for a candid chat with the magazine`s features editor, Joanne Al-Samarae. The actor said that he has earned much more money than he deserves. I came from a lower middle class family, and we had a lot of issues in terms of money, but I saw my parents work very hard to educate me so because of that, I have never been attached to material goods. I have the big houses, amazing cars, the best boxes in the stadiums; people really pamper me. But if I had none of that, and I just had my acting, then I would be happy, he said.

J Andy, who featured in the latest season of the reality show Bigg Boss, filed a police complaint on Wednesday against two persons, following an altercation at a suburban coffee shop. He has accused a woman and her male companion, who was allegedly recording the fight on his mobile phone, of physical and mental abuse. Says he, I was with a friend at a coffee shop and we spotted a table for four. At the same time, a woman came and said she also wanted to sit there. She had only one person accompanying her, so I suggested we share the table. When I went to place my order, she suddenly started hurling abuses and accused me of invading her privacy. Irritated, I asked her to stop talking by holding my palm against her face. She then whacked my hand down not once, but twice. Suddenly, I noticed her male companion recording the altercation. I warned him against shooting me without my permission and decided to shift to another table. But she came up to me and started abusing again. She even commented on my caste and sexuality. At that point, I was so infuriated that I called her a fat cow. I also decided to go to the cops. Andy is worried the two will upload the video on social media, as it could harm his reputation.

IPL committee allows David Hussey to take guard for CSK
Chinese coach says India will take time to catch up with China NEW DELHI, May 16 (PTI): China's badminton coach Li Yongbo on Friday said although India have a couple of good shuttlers in Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu, but overall they still have a long way to go before they can match up to their Chinese counterparts. "India have a couple good players in Saina and Sindhu. They are capable of beating anyone. But India will take some time before they can come at par with China. We are not too concerned about India," Yongbo said here today during a media interaction ahead of the upcoming Thomas and Uber Cup Finals, to be held at the Siri Fort Sports complex from May 18-25. He, however, admitted that India, Japan and Thailand are emerging stronger in badminton. "Countries like China, Korea, Denmark, Indonesia and Malaysia were the traditional powerhouses in badminton but now even India, Japan and Thailand are emerging in a big way," Yongbo said. Talking about badminton's popularity growing in India, Yongbo said, "The fact that a Super Series is held in India and now Thomas and Uber Cup Finals is also taking place shows India has emerged as a new market for badminton." The coach said despite being the defending champions in both Thomas as well as Uber Cup, they will not be taking any team lightly. "No doubt, we are a strong side, but in this tournament, we are not taking anyone lightly. We will be playing all our matches very seriously," he insisted. China have been clubbed with Chinese Taipei, Russia and France in Thomas Cup, while in Uber Cup, they will be up against Chinese Taipei, Russia and England.
Fully satisfied with the SC order, says Aditya Verma

NEW DELHI, May 16 (PTI): Cricket Association of Bihar secretary Aditya Verma on Friday expressed his satisfaction at the Supreme Court order which states that Retd Justice Mukul Mudgal-led threemember committee would continue with the IPL probe related to betting and spot-fixing. "I am fully satisfied with the order passed by the Honourable Supreme Court on Friday giving all power to former High Court judge Mukul Mudgal to investigate the spot fixing and corruption in the IPL VI last season," Verma was quoted as saying in a press release. "The committee will also investigate the 13 names including one of N Srinivasan that was presented to Supreme Court in a sealed envelope on February 10," Verma said. The Honourable Supreme Court also rejected the probe committee that was suggested by the BCCI. It also rejected the BCCI plea not to appoint the Mudgal Committee saying any leakage of the 13 names in the sealed envelope would "damage the reputation of some people in cricket beyond repair."

Errani beats Li Na to reach Rome semifinals
Ivanovic beats Carla Navarro ROME, May 16 (aGENCIES): Former world no. 1 and 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic defeated 13th seed Carla Suarez Navarro in 3 sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to reach the semifinals of Italian Open in Rome. After ending her losing streak against Maria Sharapova in the previous round, Ivanovic was bidding to reach her first semifinals in Italian Open since 2010, when she had lost to Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in last 4.
In only previous meeting between two players, Ivanovic had progressed last time when Suarez Navarro had retired in second set after losing the first set in Doha two years ago. There were lots of break of serve in the first set, as Ivanovic got 10 break points and converted 3 of them. Suarez Navarro broke Ivanovic 2 times and it was enough as the set went 6-4 to Serbian. 25-year-old Spaniard fought back in the second
set and won it 6-3 to force the match into a deciding set. Third set went close as both players fought their best and tried to outplay each other. Ivanovic saved both of the break points she faced and converted 1 of the three break points she got to win the third set 6-4 and reach semifinals in 2 hours and 17 minutes. She will face the winner of world no. 1 Serena Williams and China's Shuai Zhang for a place in the final.
ROME, May 16 (aP): Sara Errani took advantage of a supportive crowd to beat second-seeded Li Na 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 Friday and reach the Italian Open semifinals for the second consecutive year. The 10th-seeded Errani is attempting to become the first Italian woman to win Rome since Raffaella Reggi took the title 29 years ago. Li was unusually inconsistent, committing 52 unforced errors to Errani's 21. Errani celebrated by waving her arms to incite the crowd. Her semifinal opponent will be either 2007 and 2008 Rome champion Jelena Jankovic or third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska. In men's play, eighth-seeded Milos Raonic held off Jeremy Chardy of France 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 and will next play either Novak Djokovic or David Ferrer. The Italian Open is the last key warmup before the French Open starts in nine days.
NEW DELHI, May 16 (PTI): Australian batsman David Hussey was Friday given the nod to play for Chennai Super Kings in place of the injured Dwayne Bravo by the IPL technical committee. The Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led side had already signed Hussey in the Chennai squad a couple of days back with the Aussie joining the team soon after as he was in India as an IPL commentator for the host broadcaster. The 36-year-old, who has played 69 ODIs and 39 T20s for the Kangaroos, has plenty of IPL experience, having featured in 23 matches for Kolkata Knight Riders and 36 matches for Kings XI Punjab in previous seasons. David`s elder brother Michael Hussey was one of Chennai`s finest overseas players, scoring 1691 runs in 46 games between 2008
to 2013. West Indies all-rounder Bravo was ruled out of the tournament after injuring his shoulder while fielding against Kings XI Punjab during the teams` first match in in the UAE. There have quite a few injuries in this edition of the IPL with the technical committee approving all the requested replacements of the respective franchises. Uttar Pradesh medium-pacer Praveen Kumar recently joined Mumbai Indians after Zaheer kHan bowed out with an injury while South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir was bought by Delhi as Nathan Coulter-Nile`s replacement. Earlier Nic Maddinson of Royal Challengers Bangalore also opted out due a hamstring injury with Proteas batsman Rilee Rossouw beind added to the squad.
