Naga Hoho, Ahom Royal Society appeal for ‘peace and normalcy’ DiMaPur, JaNuary 18 (MexN): A joint meeting of the Naga civil society (Naga Students’ Federation, Naga Peoples’ Movement for Human Rights and Naga Council Dimapur) under the aegis of the Naga Hoho and the Ahom Royal Society was held today at the Bookmarc Conference Hall here. Following a “threadbare discussion” over the prevailing situation in Karbi Anglong, the house viewed that “normalcy and peace must be restored in the region at the earliest since both communities have co-existed in the past as indigenous people,” stated a joint appeal signed by president of the Naga Hoho, P. Chuba Ozukum and working president of the Ahom Royal Society, Kamala Rajkonwar. The house also appealed to both the communities to “shun all sorts of violence and bloodshed between brothers once and for all and built confidence among the people.” It “strongly” felt that both the Assam state Government and the Central Government should “initiate towards removing ethnic clashes and bring permanent solution at the earliest.”

‘Political understanding and vision is indispensable’

DiMaPur, JaNuary 18 (MexN): Ato Kilonser of the NSCN/GPRN, Th. Muivah, has expressed “sincere and deepest appreciation” on behalf of the Collective Leadership towards the Sumi Aphuyemi Kukami Hoho (SAKH)—the apex organization of Sumi Aphuyemi—representing the Pughoboto area and “all others conscientious Sumi brothers and sisters for the bold and courageous stand you have shown for the cause of our people.” His message appre-

ciated the “wisdom you have displayed during the treacherous situation that crossed the threshold of your homeland recently which led to the unfortunate evacuation of our designated camp at Mukalimi that was mutually agreed with the Government of India in the current IndoNaga cease-fire period with the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN).” Stating that “political understanding and vision is indispensable to a nation’s survival,” Muivah

said that “History will remember and respect the courage you have displayed in standing single-handedly for the cause of our nation.” Acknowledging the role of the Sumis from Pughoboto area in Naga history, the Ato Kilonser noted that “The decision taken by you is most precious to our history.” “And today you have proved yourself in spite of the grim situation created by few persons with vested interest that has unwittingly become the joy of our ad-

DiMaPur, JaNuary 18 (MexN): Student bodies could play a lead role in refining the education system, said retired IAS officer K. Khekiye Sema while gracing the 36th general conference of the Western Sumi Students’ Union (WSSU) at Khekiho village this morning as speaker. Student bodies should do this especially in the village areas which he thought is the basic and primary priority in the making of an educated society. He challenged the students to lead upfront in cleaning up the “mess” in the education institutions and do away with practice of proxy

teachers and recruitment of “unqualified and insincere teachers.” Khekiye Sema said that God has created everyone equal but whoever makes the best use of abilities gets ahead in life and prospers. In the same manner, he said students change their attitude by thinking out of the box and prepare themselves to become leaders of tomorrow. He said that the world is moving much too fast and with the advancement of the world, students should focus attention in maintaining strict discipline, spend more time in learning com-

puters and other advanced subjects in order to achieve success in life and to help in economic growth. Greeting the students on the occasion, Isawoto Zhimomi, president, Western Sumi Kukami Hoho, said success is for those who work hard and now is the time for them to equip themselves with good education. He encouraged the students to value their tradition and to give importance to promotion of one’s mother tongue. Exhorting the gathering, former president of Sumi Kiphimi Kuqhakulu, Zhevihe Z. JaiPur, JaNuary 18 (iaNS): China has the credentials to rule the world, said a country expert, but was outvoted by a number of other distinguished authors and thinkers who held the question was unnecessary and contenders should instead concentrate on providing their people a quality life. “China is setting a challenge to the world... its is an obvious but necessary point that economic power is not everything but is very significant,” said Rana Mitter, a professor of the history and politics of modern China at the Oxford University’s Faculty of Oriental Studies, at a session “Who will Rule the World?” on the second day of the Jaipur Literary Festival Saturday He quipped it was ironic that he was the second ethnic Bengali was advocating an east Asian power as a world leader, noting the first had been Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. “That didn’t turn out very well,” he said. China was ahead of India by a long gap, said Mitter, adding three factors that made it a contender were rooted in economy and geography. “It is the

fastest growing economy in the world, its occupies a crucial geopolitical space in the economically significant Pacific area, as well as having impact over countries all over the globe,” he said. Chinese author Xiaolu Guo, who was also on the panel, however pointed out that there was one way China lacked credentials - in culture. Contending that China was a major force economically, she said the same could not be said of it on the cultural front. “We all are speaking in English, not in Chinese... and the Chinese way of life is confined to China itself,” she said. In his comments, renowned sociologist Dipankar Gupta said the question was “damning. “Two powers (US and USSR) tried to do that and made a mess of the world,” he said. “For India, the question is how we can rule ourselves,” he said, countries should be judged on what they can deliver to their people. ‘Govt mulling check on social media’

PatNa, JaNuary 18 (Pti): Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Saturday drew attention toward alleged “misuse” of social media in forking old “provocative” photographs to foment communal riots and said his ministry was mulling to put a check on it. Shinde said in an indirect reference to Muzaffarnagar riots. The minister was addressing a function at the launch of a Hindi newspaper here. “Recently there was some provocative items about Northeast and strict action was on the need to preserve and taken,” Shinde said. “Seeing the evil impact promote cultural identity. Also sharing greetings with the students on Friday evening, Jolly K. Awomi pointed out the contribution of women towards society and called on the girl students to always uphold the “moral values and essence of a woman” besides attaining good education. She said the present generation is an age of prosperity and advancement and which can come only through education and hard work. More than a thousand student representatives from Western Sumi areas are attending the conference.

countries scored how in this respect and were not concerned with questions like this. Colombian author Oscar GuardiolaRivera, who has written “What if Latin America ruled the world?”, said if this came about, then the world would have “great dancing and better football and be more happy too”. He said the question was wrong, and repeated assumptions that had led to the crushing of the creative period of the 1960s and 1970s. “Countries which make the most cars, have the largest per capita incomes, and the biggest guns, have not changed the picture at all. He advocated that people should think that they were not only historical agents, but geological too, and how their choices and decisions affected the environment. “We should recognise that nature also has rights and is not simply there for the taking.” Lord Meghnad Desai said the problem was that the thinking was still in terms of nation-states. “Who will rule the world? Its not India or China .... Google, Microsoft and Coca Cola do already,” he said.

of social media which is taking the society on a wrong direction we are thinking of imposing a check on them,” the Union Home minister said. Shinde lamented “twisting” of facts in the name of investigative journalism and said it was a challenge for the media to uphold honest journalism. “There is a question mark today on how much truth media reports give… its a big challenge for newspapers to maintain honesty of journalism,” he said. Shinde said the print media also faces challenge from faster mode of delivery of information on Internet.

sunanda’s death was unnatural, body had injury marks: Doctors

New Delhi, JaNuary 18 (iaNS): Mystery surrounded the death of Sunanda Pushkar, wife of junior HRD minister Shashi Tharoor, with doctors at AIIMS Saturday saying that the 52-year-old died an “unnatural, sudden death” with her body bearing “injury marks”. Police investigators, however, said that “it could be a case of drug overdose or overdose of sleeping pills” but hastened to add that things would be clear only after the detailed autopsy report. Police also said that the couple had a “verbal spat” during their flight from Thiruvananthapuram to Delhi on Tuesday. In the hotel too they were arguing, which was disclosed by the housekeeping staff to police during investigation. Tharoor, 57, who was himself admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for 11 hours after he complained of chest pain Friday, broke down many times. He accompanied Pushkar’s body in the ambulance to their residence at 97, Lodhi Estate and then later to the crematorium.

Speaking to reporters after twohour long postmortem, Sudhir Kumar Gupta, head of the department of forensic medicine at AIIMS said: “After post-mortem examination, we found that it was a case of sudden unnatural death. “There were certain injury marks on the body. Since the investigating agency is probing the issue and there are certain issues with the injury, the details cannot be revealed,” Gupta,

who was part of a three-member team that conducted the autopsy, added. However, doctors said the real cause of death can only be ascertained once the laboratory test result of biological samples are received. He also said that samples for toxicological analysis, which means ruling out any poison and pathology of the heart, has been preserved. But police sources told IANS that the death could be “a case of drug overdose”. Police will also take a statement from Tharoor, the Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram. Doctors at a Kerala hospital where Pushkar was undergoing treatment said that she did not had any grave illness. At the Lodhi Road crematorium, Pushkar’s son and father P.N. Das were inconsolable. Both at the mortuary and at the cremation ground Pushkar’s son broke down several times. But whenever Tharoor tried to console him, Shiv moved away. This happened many times. A magisterial enquiry has already been ordered in the death as the couple got married in August 2010.

ImphAl, JAnuAry 18 (nnn): The verdict which will decide the fate of Hopeson Ningshen, said to be a lieutenant colonel of the NSCN (IM), will be known only on January 25. Earlier, January 18 was fixed for the pronouncement of the verdict. Since Justice V.K. A public meeting held on January 15 at Mapari Ningshingkol, Uripok Machin in Imphal had demanded for capital punishment to be given to the accused. Hopeson Ningshen has been accused of involvement in the triple murder case of bureaucrat Dr. Kishan Singh and his two subordinates in 2009. ImphAl, JAnuAry 18 (nnn): During the 8th death anniversary of Meitei National Front (MNF) leader, Chingsubam Akaba on January 13, Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) president Artax A Shimray acknowledged that the late Meitei leader believed in “the peoples to peoples relationships and dialogues.” The speech of Artax A Shimray was obtained by Newmai News Network today. Artax said, Akaba not only understood the importance of a robust relationship of the peoples in the hills and the plains but nurtured the same. “He was keenly promoting art and culture not only in the plains but in the hills too, as he saw great value in retaining and maintaining these cultures

that defines the land, territory and identity of a people." "His work reflects his understanding that the people in the hills and valley are different yet must walk hand in hand and the celebration of Mera Hou Chongba will bear testimony to this," he added. According to Artax Shimray, Akaba had clearly grasped what the Hindu religion had done to the people and the society; it had changed the value system and graded some people as 'polluted', built caste system that did not exist earlier and had brought many forms of discrimination and discriminatory practices. "It had led to the polarization of the people of the hills and the valleys and the only way to redeem from this in-

justice and damage was to revert to the traditional Sanamahi religion..." the Tangkhul leader added. Akaba's vision was lived through the mission he undertook not as a revivalist but also as someone who placed the welfare of the people above individual’s interest and working tirelessly to improve the lives of the people, said Artax Shimray. "As one of the very few people who understood what self determination is, he was very clear and passionate that Manipur, which he preferred to call as Kangleipak, is not India,” Artax Shimray stated. “With this understanding and clarity, he supported the Naga peoples’ movement for right to self determination too.”

Two labourers abducted in Manipur

ImphAl, JAnuAry 18 (nnn): Two labourers from Thoubal district have been abducted by suspected hill based militants for ransom at Kanglatongbi under Sekmai Police Station, police reported on Saturday. The abduction of the two labourers at Kanglatongbi took place about 9 pm on Friday when three armed men, who came in a van barged into a makeshift tent at Kanglatongbi bazaar along Imphal - Dimapur road of National Highway-2 in Sadar Hills, Senapati district near a Hindu mandir and pulled up the two labourers before they quickly left the place. Police said 11 labourers have been stay-

The president also slammed the State Education department for the prescription of such unfortunate incident. He opined that the author should be punished for indirectly insulting the people of Manipur. He added that a sitin- protest demonstration against the land encroachment of Thangbung Mino and author of the book Naorem Rabie Singh will be held on January 22.

One of the kidnapped is a Tata DI mini truck driver identified as Maibam Tomba, 33, who hails from Charangpat Nepra Company, a village in Thoubal district, and the other is Thongam Shanta, 40, a resident of Thoubal Athokpam Leikai. They have been working there for a special private contractor named Maibam Joy of Charangpat Nepra Company. Sekmai police has filed an FIR over the incident after contractor Joy lodged a complaint about the reported kidnapping. On Saturday, a combined team of Sekmai police and Imphal West district police commandos

carried out cordon and search operation in Sapermeina area. Police said that no arrest was made in the operation, adding the search would continue to recover the duo.

guwAhAtI, JAnuAry 18 (IAnS): Suspected Bodo militants opened fire Saturday in Assam's Udalguri town killing a person, a day after five bus passengers were gunned down in Kokrajhar district, officials said. Suspected militants of the anti-talk faction of the National Democratic Front

Taking cue from Akaba’s visions and experiences, Shimray challenged whether the people in the state should continue to live in doubts and fear - suspicious of each other or “collectively fight these nemesis and chart out our future as peoples who can never be separated and must walk together in good times and bad times and work together as peace maker and live harmoniously as good neighbours." To begin with, he asserted, it must come through the respect and recognition of the right to self determination of the various communities in the region. "Let us give our spirit of neigbourhood a new leash of life and breathe energy and power into it."

APPRECIATION TO HON'BLE MINISTER (R&B), Mr. KUZHOLUZHO (AZO) NIENU

For the last few years various descriptions were branded against the deplorable roads of Nagaland especially in Dimapur city. Road being one of the most essential part of human needs, in spite of so many laudable developments taking place in Nagaland under the present Government, people were disgruntled and rather apprehensive of even the survival of the DAN Government itself because of the pitiable road conditions. The good image of the DAN Government was vanishing into thin air with the people speculating that DAN-III will face its waterloo sooner than later. However, as the saying goes "Better late than never". The bold intervention of our Hon'ble R&B Minister Azo Nienu amidst a fund crunch has brought a ray of hope finally rising in the horizon of our long abandoned roads. General public and the business community are equally appreciative of the work which is going on war footing under the direct supervision of our concerned Hon'ble Minister who happens to be visiting the ongoing works almost once a week where the people of Dimapur are the witnesses. Within his short stint as our sitting R&B Minister, a yeomen work done by his department so far in Dimapur city roads in just 2 1/4 months time is worth admiring by everyone. Hats off to our Minister Kuzholuzho (Azo) Nienu for proving his worth as a Workaholic Minister conferred to him by Confederation of All India Universities few years back. Now is the high time for Nagas to realize that gone are the days of exhausted and incompetent old Ministers. Today we are living in the fast moving generation of a competitive world where so many dedicated and sincere leaders like Azo Nienu are the need of the hour, who is Dynamic, young, Honest, Hardworking and most importantly a Practical man. We wish him good health and brighter future in the days to come. It is our solemn message to our Naga people especially the energetic young folks irrespective of tribes and colours to co-operate with the PWD department as this gigantic road task requires a joint effort from the public too. And we also sincerely request the Central Government to sanction adequate fund for our state roads is early as possible as we are clearly lagging behind other states of India in this sector. We highly appreciate the bold initiative taken up by our present DAN Government in giving due importance to Dimapur roads, as Dimapur is the only cosmopolitan and common city of all the tribes in Nagaland. All these new and worthy developments taking place in this city under the able leadership of our Hon’ble Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio should be appreciated not only by citizens of Dimapur but by every Nagas. And also we thank our Hon’ble Chief Minister for giving the right job to a right man. 1. Mr.Amit Agarwal, Vice Chairman. 2. Mr.Ghoishe Yeptho, Org.Secy. 3. Mr.Ramakandi, Finance Secy. 4. The NDFB (S) claimed responsibility for the killing. The outfit told journalists over phone they took action to protest the killing of a cadre by the police and army in a “fake encounter” on Friday morning at Kachugaon in Kokrajhar district.

"As Mizo Zirlai Pawl, a powerful students' union, began a mass voluntary search operation from last week to rescue the kidnapped people, tribal families apparently feared a repeat of the 1997-ethnic violence and fled," a refugee leader told reporters. Soon, off-season apples may grow in AP

hyDErabaD, January 18 (Et): While the Greek hero Hercules wanted to possess the fruit desperately, Adam - the first man in Abrahamic religions - apparently couldn’t resist eating it and was then desperate. Whatever the reasons, few fruits have enjoyed the clout of apple, one of the oldest cultivated trees on Earth. In India, its farming has so far been limited mostly to the Himalayan region - Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand as well as pockets of the North East. But if scientists at Hyderabad’s Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) have their way, they could soon be grown in Araku Valley of Andhra Pradesh. For some time now, the changing climatic conditions in the Himalayan region have been hurting apple production, forcing scien-

tists to look for alternatives. Know as the Kashmir of Andhra Pradesh, Araku is blessed with a temperate climate and low temperatures that is suited for growing apples; at least, in theory. Situated at about 3,600 feet above the sea level, the Araku Valley area records temperatures of 1-5 degrees centigrade during winters. “Since apples are grown at high altitude areas with low temperatures in winters, we hope the locations in the Araku valley area that we chose for the experiment will yield positive results over the next four-five years,” said Ramesh Aggarwal, who heads a team of CCMB scientists working on the project. The CCMB scientists are exploring the prospects of growing the fruit - which originated in the Central Asian region, most likely

Kazakhstan - in the Lambasingi and Chintapally regions of Araku in Andhra Pradesh’s Visakhapatnam district. The scientists began work a few years ago to develop new breeds that are resistant to changing climatic conditions while ensuring high yields as part of a genomics sequencing project sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology. They hope to identify genes that give the plant characteristics such as disease and drought resistance. Today there are more than 7,500 varieties of apples grown worldwide, of which at least 300 are cultivated in India commercially. It is said that Alexander the Great first brought the dwarf varieties to Europe (Macedonia) in the fourth century BC, from where it found its way to the rest of the world. Aggarwal said his team recently

visited Araku valley and held discussions with local farmers, nongovernmental organisations and researchers to explore growing apples there. If the Araku experiment succeeds, the scientists plan to replicate it in other hilly regions of the South, including the Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu and Coorg in Karnataka. “To begin with, we will experiment with some 100 saplings of seven leading apple varieties by this month end and increase the number of plants to around 500 over the next one year,” said Aggarwal. In India, the fifth-largest producer of the fruit worldwide, apples were first grown only towards the end of the 19th Century. But it was Samuel Evans Stokes, or Satyananda Stokes as he was later known, who introduced apple cultivation to Himachal Pradesh in the early part of the last century.

M&M to halt production iBerry launches smartphone Auxus Nuclea N2 for up to three days

mumbai, January 17 (rEutErs): Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd, India’s largest utility vehicle maker, said it would halt production for up to three days this month at its automotive factories to align output with sales requirements. “The management does not envisage any adverse impact on availability of vehicles in the market due to adequacy of vehicle stocks to serve the market requirements,” the company said in a statement to the stock exchange on Saturday. The Indian auto industry is facing a second year of falling sales as high interest rates and fuel costs keep a lid on consumer spending in a slowing economy.

Orgs demand punishment for gang rape accused Dimapur, January 18 (mExn): Tikhir Students’ Union Dimapur has vehemently condemned the rape of a young girl on January 12 in Dimapur. In a condemnation note, the Union president, Apollo and general secretary, Peter Limti stated that the victim was forcefully abducted from Bor-Lengri while she was returning home after church service by three accused, namely Benathung Kikon, Yanathungo Odyuo, and Wobenthung Ngullie. Asserting that the act is inhuman, it appealed to the law enforcing agency to punish the offenders so such crimes are not committed in the future.

Tikhir Women Organization Tikhir Women Organization (TWA) has also vehemently condemned the January 12 gang rape in Dimapur. A press statement issued by TWA general secretary, T Tsunongshi and its president, Tushila Caroline informed that after the incident, one of the accused took the victim to another place and made her stay there overnight. The victim was also threatened to remain silent about the incident. Further, when FIR was lodged at the police station, the note alleged,

the victim was beaten by the duty officer on the night of January 13. In this regard, the Organization has appealed for stern action against the duty officer “because she is meant to help and save someone who is in danger, but not to insult or humiliate.” The medical examination, the release added, was also done only the next day when the parents brought the victim for medical check-up. TWA also strongly condemned not publishing the photos of the accused. The Association further appealed the competent authority to award befitting punishment to the accused as per the law of the land.

Thomas Lotha was the chief host. He was confident that with the competition, the community would learn to build bond of unity and further foster peace and tranquility. Six villages competed on two songs, namely “It’s not an easy road,” composed by

DIVERSITY: Transforming dance Five minutes with... Ashley Banjo

A

shley Banjo rose to fame as the choreographer for the dance troupe Diversity, winners of Britain's Got Talent in 2009. In his new television show, Ashley Banjo's Big Town Dance, he and the troupe spend two months teaching people in Stockton-On-Tees how to dance. Ashley chats about his earliest memories of dancing, how his physics background has helped him as a choreographer, and why you have to keep pushing yourself Why did you want to do this particular show? I loved the idea of dancing with normal people, showing that dance is for everybody. It just seemed perfect to go somewhere and use dancing to bring the community together.

Why did you choose stockton-on-tees? It's really run-down; the recession has hit them quite hard. Every other shop was boarded up. We wanted to help the community a bit with this project. You're not going to fix it in two months, but just put a little light back into it. And it really, really did help.

IVERSITY are an English street dance troupe formed in 2007 and based in London. They are best known for winning the third series of Britain’s Got Talent in 2009, famously beating singer Susan Boyle in the live final. They also won the Families United Positive Role Models at the Spirit of London Awards. Formed in 2007, Diversity consists of friends from London (Leytonstone and Dagenham) and Essex (Basildon), including three sets of brothers and four other members. At the time they appeared on Britain’s Got Talent, some were still at school or university, while others had jobs of their own. The group, ranging in age from 17 to 28, consists of leader and choreographer Ashley Banjo and the following other members: Jordan Banjo, Sam Craske, Mitchell Craske, Perri Kiely, Warren Russell, Ike Ezekwugo, Terry Smith and Ashton Russell. One set of brothers have left which are; Ian McNaughton, Jamie McNaughton and Matthew McNaughton. They also have a Twitter account which was originally named “DiversityBGT”, but was then changed to “Diversity_Tweet”. They are currently managed by Ashley’s mother, Danielle and based at Dancework studio. Before Diversity: Swift Moves Before Diversity most of the group belonged to Swift Moves or Swift Moves Juniors. As Swift Moves, they beat KI (the crew Marlon Wallen from Flawless was with) during KI’s second run to seven wins at The Jump Off where Swift Moves battled a total of four times.

2007: Formation and early career Diversity formed in 2007, although there were a few lineup changes between 2007 and 2009 with Perri Kiely and Ike Ezekwugo joining the group. By 2008 the group consisted of friends from east London (Leytonstone and Dagenham) and Essex (Basildon), included four sets of brothers and three other members. Some were still at school or university, while others had jobs of their own. The group consisted of leader and choreographer Ashley Banjo and the following other members: Jordan Banjo, Sam Craske, Mitchell Craske, Warren Russell, Ashton Russell, Perri Kiely, Ike Ezekwugo, Terry Smith, Ian McNaughton, Jamie McNaughton and Matthew McNaughton. They also won the Street Dance Weekend 2007 competition and returned the following year as guest performers before deciding to enter Britain’s Got Talent. Ashton Russell left the group before they entered Britain’s Got Talent. He was playing the part of Michael Jackson in the musical Thriller live. 2009: Britain’s Got Talent In 2009, Diversity auditioned in London for the third series of Britain’s Got Talent. Judge Amanda Holden said: “Just when I think I’ve seen it all, you came on.” They received three “yeses” from Holden, Piers Morgan and Simon Cowell, and eventually progressed to the live semi-finals, where they opened the first show on 24 May. After their performance, they received a standing ovation from the audience and the judges, who all dubbed their performance “fantastic”. Later that night, were in the top 3 with singers Natalie Okri and Susan Boyle. Boyle was revealed to have received the most votes and went straight through to the live final, meaning that the judges would choose between Okri and Diversity for the second spot in the final. Morgan and Cowell both voted in favour of Diversity - Morgan believed that Diversity had a better chance of winning the show and Cowell admitted that he had been “a huge fans” of Diversity from their first audition. Following their performance in the final, Holden said she thought Diversity had “blown Flawless out of the water”, while Cowell said that “If I had to give marks on that, this would be the only performance tonight I would give a 10 to.” However, Morgan thought Flawless “just edged [Diversity].” They finished in the top 3 again, as did Boyle, along with saxophonist Julian Smith. In a shock result, in front of a record audience of 17.3 million viewers, Diversity were announced as the winners, despite Boyle being the clear favourite to win. Post Britain’s Got Talent

Did you have trouble convincing people to be on the show? Loads. It's a big thing to commit to. Over time, the 'Yes' got a bit easier, but within the first month, when the momentum wasn't rolling, oh my god, I was literally just getting 'No' and 'Go away'.

Ashley Banjo

Did they need to take time off from work? Yeah, some people took time off from work, then some people would literally work all day and come straight, and other people would rehearse in the day and do night shifts. That's what made it so special. These people were committing time, effort and money to it.

Were you worried you wouldn't be able to teach this many people to dance? Yeah, normally when I'm doing something I think, 'this is going to be harder than I thought, but we can do it'. But at one point during this show I said, 'I don't know if there's anything I can do to pull this off. There are so many people, and so many people who can't dance'. In the end, it came off from sheer hard work and determination. It was tough though. What was your earliest memory of dancing? Literally, from the day I was born I was in my parent's dance studio in my mum's arms. I didn't want to dance until I was about six though, I was too embarrassed. But when I was 15, my mum, who was the main teacher, had an operation on her knees and because we couldn't afford another instructor, I took over. That's when it all really started for me. Your parents have supported your dance career, but did they push you to go to university too? Yeah, my dad really wanted me to get an education. He said, 'Yes you've got talent, but you need to have a back-up plan'. I got into some of the top unis in the country, but I didn't go. I picked my uni based on what was closest to the studio, which meant I could then jump on the tube and go and teach dance. Do you think studying physics helped your choreography? It's handy for the planning of the choreography. When you're putting a show together, planning the structure, the narrative, how it fits - it's all logic. It's like you're planning a formula, a puzzle, and that's what my brain does. I'm pretty lucky.

Do you think people realise how much work it is? No, no way. I practice from 9am to 10pm daily, and go through three T-shirts, 5,000 calories and litres of water - it's a lot of work. Then again, if you gave me a month off, I wouldn't know what to do with myself... What advice would you give to someone who wanted to follow in your footsteps? Follow in mine? Don't... I'm joking. I suppose just work hard. When I think I'm working hard, I know there's someone working harder. And if I'm hitting a goal, I don't think to myself, 'yes I'm on target'. I think to myself, 'I could have done more'. I'm always pushing it. So never be satisfied. Always push and push and push.

INSPIRATIONAL STORIES, MESSAGES, POEMS & SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES

THE HOPE OF From Babel to Pentecost HUMANKIND FOR PEACE Babel (Genesis 11) The Tower of Babel story is a familiar one. It is familiar because it narrates the history of how we came to be. And familiar because the story revolves around two things very important to the whole of humanity: building projects and language. This story was set not far after the Fall of men in the Garden of Eden and the Bible tells us that sin had already penetrated the whole-world. At the heart of sin is the desire to dethrone God-and this was at the heart of their grand project Babel. These ancient people moved on and settled in the plains of Shinar. This settlement was a direct violation of God’s command to scatter and “fill the earth”. Then they learned how to make bricks and started a “building project”. They had power, prosperity and creativity to back it up. But the most dangerous thing they had was unity and a peaceful atmosphere to pursue their plans. Power, peace, prosperity and unity are not ultimate goods. For if in unity we agree to bypass Scripture and put tradition in its place; if in peace we forget to pray; if in prosperity we become numb, arrogant, greedy and blind, then division could be better than collective apostasy, suffering and conflict could serve God’s purpose better than peace and prosperity. Unity can be dangerous if we unite under a false ideal. God’s judgement at Babel was necessary to preserve and protect our humanity because we are not gods. Any project that dethrones God is bound to end in destruction. In the judgment given at Babel there was grace, and in the punishment there was mercy. God judges us not only because we are sinful, but because he wants to put us back into his grand building project-the building of the Kingdom of God on earth. Immediately after Babel, God puts together his plan to set apart a people for himself, bless them and through this nation, bless the Kedo Peseyie whole world again. He calls Abraham, and the nation of Israel is born. From here begins God’s redemption plan of sending his Son Jesus to the world and the Holy Spir- was a sign of division, at Pentecost, different languages it to empower those who chose to join this new grand was a sign of unity. The only place where God has broken down the barriers of language and culture is within building project. his family-the church [And how dare we re-introduce these barriers within the church]. We could be workPentecost (Acts 2) In Acts 2, where the Pentecost happened, we could ing against God’s new grand project if we continue to let say that all the sons of Abraham were gathered in one language and culture barriers divide us. God’s grand new project brings all people together place when the Holy Spirit came upon them with power, and there the foundations of a new humanity was laid. under one grand scheme to work together with all our Like the Babel story, here too, we could say there is a differences. The concern is not individual and personbuilding project, and different languages were used as al anymore, but social. The Gospel is concerned with a tool for building. But if at Babel different languages our personal salvation, only so that we can take on a

social consciousness. We have the tendency to divide individual well being and social concerns, but salvation should not be confined only to giving meaningful existence to the individual. The Spirit that blew involves the affairs of all peoples with different languages, cultures and background. The whole world witnessed and received the blessings, and they declared God’s wonders in all the languages of the world. Someone said that the church is the original multinational corporation. All others are copied. The primary message of Jesus in the Gospels was that the Kingdom of God had come, and he went about preaching it, and inviting people to come and join in this grand new “building project” of building the Kingdom of God in the world.

The Church: Called out to build the Kingdom of God. Two stories: Babel and Pentecost. One question: which story do we continue? Babel-a people united under a false ideal and full of themselves, or Pentecosta people full of God and his Spirit? The Babel story is all too familiar because we have re-enacted it too often. But if we are to re-enact the Pentecost story, it may force us out of the four-walls of the church to different languages, and beyond the concern of our local church. After all, the church is ecclesia of God - meaning “called out” into the world. The people at Babel were also called out to fill the earth, but they decided to stay in and settle down. We are the church not because we come to the church; we are the church precisely because we walk out again after service. If we stayed in we would be a cult. We are called out to tell the story of Jesus, about the Kingdom of God, that God is alive and active, and that there is Hope. Here too, as in the other two stories, two words are important: “the world” and “language”. The world is our field, and language is primary in communicating the story. Stanley Haerwas puts it very powerfully, “In telling the story of Jesus to the world, we are not just telling a nice story, but w¬e become the story and it becomes our story. We are not just telling the world that there is an alternative to violence, corruption and greed, we become the alternative-we are the alternative” (paraphrased). This wonderful invitation stands open to everyone to come and build together. No fundraising is required. No degrees or credentials are necessary. We just come with empty hands, willing feet, and mouths ready to proclaim the news of the Kingdom come. This is a wonderful privilege and responsibility. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

The Gift of Church Renew your mind and change your life

Everyone, Whether Believer or Not, Needs to Belong

Hugh Hewitt have belonged to many churches in my fifty-seven years, beginning with St. Pius X in Warren, Ohio, and most recently to both a Presbyterian congregation and a Catholic parish. I hear at least a hundred sermons a year, and the act of listening to a priest or a pastor expound on Scripture is always good, even if the sermon isn't. Going to church, I've learned, is a gift-a gift that teaches us how to give to others. Everyone-every single person reading this and every person in the world-needs to belong to a church no matter whether they believe or not. First, church gives its members a regular occasion for concentration on the biggest questions of them all – questions that have been asked since the beginning of time for the simple reason that we are made to wonder about this world and our places in it. Those questions and that wondering are not served-reliably and seriously-anywhere except in a church. And thus that deep, deep hunger is fed only through life within a body devoted to answering these enormous questions of why the world is the way it is and how we ought to live in it. The second gift a church gives is a community of people-far from like-minded and usually very diverse in terms of social and economic backgrounds-who are inclined to care about these big questions and because of that inclination to act in particularly civil ways. Real communities are very hard to come by. Workplaces are organized for profit, and neighborhoods are far from the stable, multi-relational centers of life they were even a few decades ago. Not so the church. Church begins by offering the gifts of important conversations and real community, but for those who stay longer than a few weeks, it soon begins to teach gift giving, whether it is something as simple as teaching Sunday school to three-year-olds or helping out with the ushering, or second-level gift giving of dollar contributions or mission work, or third-level commitments of fellowship in a small group or an international mission. A healthy church will be all about gift giving and learning to give. And before you know it, you will be both giving and receiving in quantities you had never ever imagined. Energy, enthusiasm, and gratitude-three of the seven gifts outlined in my book The Happiest Life-should be evident in every worship service, even the most contemplative. Prayer and singing, the readings and indeed every aspect of church, whether Roman Catholic or Protestant, should be infused with these gifts, though, of course, we are susceptible to "going through the motions." The great worship director or liturgist, the terrific priest-homilist or preacher will be known for the energy and enthusiasm in proclaiming the gospel, and every participant will at least say the words of gratitude that are at the heart of every Christian service, thus setting the tone for a week ahead lived in accordance with the practices of collective worship. Generosity is a learned behavior. The habits of giving and volunteering that are part and parcel of almost every Sunday school in the country do not go unabsorbed by the children on whom they are conferred and to whom they are modeled. How much happier people would be if, regardless of their beliefs, they showed up at the same church most every Sunday, said the same prayers, chatted with the same people, heard the same sermons, attended the same potlucks. Listen to me. This is the key to renewing your life if you are unhappy. Pick a church. Practically any church. Go and go and go again and again and again. Even if you are shy, force yourself to say hello to the greeter and find a second gathering there-a Bible study, a class, a lecture-and go again. After a month you will have seamlessly evolved into a churchgoer and your life will be almost inestimably better. There are huge theological divisions between churches, but they hardly matter if you are unchurched. Here's my advice: pick the biggest church within five miles of your apartment or house and just go there. Stick there for a year. Then decide if you need to change because of theology. If you are a cradle Catholic, find your closest Catholic parish. Familiarity will make the first few visits easier on you even if you are shy beyond belief. People want to talk about God and about this crazy world with all its terrors and pains. And people do talk about God and about this crazy world with all its terrors and pains, every Sunday and often throughout the week. So go.

hat are you thinking about? Do you ever think about what you're thinking about? Do you know that you can choose your thoughts? That might seem like a strange thing to say, but the truth is, many people don't realize they can choose what they think about. And it's important for us to choose our thoughts carefully because our thoughts have a lot to do with our perspectives and attitudes. I remember when I finally realized this for myself. At the time, I was a very frustrated, miserable Christian who had no peace. Even though I went to church every week and read my Bible regularly, I wasn't experiencing the abundant life in Christ that John 10:10 says we can have. Proverbs 23:7 says, "For as he thinks in his heart, so is he" (NKJV). In other words, we become what we think. Or, as I like to say, where the mind goes, the man follows. It was a breakthrough to understand that my problems had a lot to do with a negative, critical, suspicious, judgmental mindset, and I didn't have to just think any thought that fell into my mind. I could think about what I wanted to think about on purpose. The best thing we can do is renew our minds with the Word of God so we can think like He thinks and experience His good plan for our lives. Romans 12:2 says, "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God" (NKJV). When you spend time studying the Word and renewing your mind with the Truth, it helps you set your mind in the right direction so you can have more victory in Christ in your life. And as this new way of thinking gradually renews your mind, it dilutes the old thinking and transforms your perspectives and attitudes. I've discovered 12 power thoughts, based on Scripture, which will positively affect your life. The first one is I can do whatever I need to do in life through Christ. This power thought is so critical because it helps us put our focus on God, not ourselves. We need to understand that we desperately need God every minute of every day. And when we try to handle everything on our own, that's when we end up stressedout, overwhelmed and thinking things like "I can't do that," "If that happens again, it's going to put me over the edge," or "I don't know if I can take this anymore!"

Philippians 4:13 (AMP) says, "I have strength for all things in Christ Who empowers me [I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who infuses inner strength into me; I am self-sufficient in Christ's sufficiency]." I love how the Amplified version says "I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him." This means that no matter what happens today, I'm ready for it and nothing is too much for me because I am more than a conqueror through Christ! Being more than a conqueror in Christ means that before you ever get a problem, you already know you will overcome it because you can do whatever you need to do in life through Christ. The challenge is not too much for you! God's grace is sufficient for you and His strength is made perfect in your weakness. (See 2 Corinthians 12:9.) If God is permitting something to be in your life that's difficult, you can trust that He will give you what you need to do what you need to do. That's because He never asks us to do anything without giving us the ability to do it.

God has a great plan for your life, but if you don't see yourself the way He sees you, then you won't be able to do what He calls you to do. Learn to agree with God and believe His Word more than you believe what you think and feel. He wants to do great things through you, and it doesn't matter what your background is, what mistakes you've made, your level of education or what natural skills you have. All things are possible with God, and He can do anything He chooses to do in your life. I want to encourage you to spend some time meditating on this power thought and studying scriptures in the Word about the greatness of God and who you are in Christ. Start each day declaring, "Lord, I can handle whatever life brings today because I have strength for all things in Christ who empowers me. I can do whatever I need to do in life through Christ!" Rev. L. Suohie Mhasi eavens and earth are created by God and are existing by His life, wisdom and power. Human life, wisdom and power are by the life, wisdom and power of God. Living being of human species is humankind and humankind is a family and all human beings irrespective of races, colours and languages are of human family. There is one Creator and the Creator is the LORD and FATHER of human family. Human beings have confusion because of lack of clarity about human relationship with God and about human family. As fish needs water to live, all human beings have to have relationship with the CREATOR because human beings apart from relationship with the CREATOR is a derailment of peaceful life and to have relationship with God is possible only by actually knowing Him, believing in Him, fearing Him and obeying Him. So the law of relationship with God is “KNOW GOD, BELIEVE IN HIM, FEAR HIM AND OBEY HIM.” God is the Creator and giver of all things. Human beings are the beneficiaries of God’s gifts alone. Man has a limit of himself and is not a resource beyond his limit. Man can be a vessel of either God or Satan. God’s vessels are messengers of good news, saviours, builders, light of the world and comforters. Satanic vessels are messengers of terror, fear and destroyers of human lives. The attempts of the world to bring about peace have been a failure because seeking to have the right relationship with God is never included as an agenda in the resolution for peace. It is very comfortable to say that on the platform of acknowledgement of the law of relationship with God, all human beings on the earth are accessible to one another and have freedom of fellowshipping with one another and share opinions and thoughts with one another in true love for all without discrimination and barriers of any sort. Many terrorists will become real brothers and sisters in the family of humankind. If the people seek to have relationship with God, it is the way of human security in all aspects of human life. The hope of the world rests on having relationship with the Creator.

Crazy stories involving church leaders

e trust them to give us spiritual guidance and lead us, however just like all of us, preachers are human and sometimes they can take things way too far. Walk on water Evangelist Franck Kabele, 35 met his untimely death earlier this year after trying to recreate Jesus’ miracle of walking on water. According to africanseer.com, a determined Kabele told his congregation that he had had a revelation that he would be able to cross the waters just like Jesus did, all it would take is enough faith. “He took his congregation to the beach saying he would walk across the Komo estuary, which takes 20 minutes by boat,” a witness reportedly told Glasgow Daily Record. “He walked into the water, which soon passed over his head and he never came back.” May he rest in peace! Holy milk? A Brazilian pastor was arrested last year after he somehow managed to convince his followers that ‘holy milk’ flowed from his private organ. According to thecontroversialfiles.net, Valdeci Sobreni Picano claimed that the Holy Spirit would secrete from his private organ in the form of “sacred milk”. "He has convinced us that only God could come into our lives through our mouth and that's why he would do what he did", one congregant was quoted saying. We are sure a special place in hell has been reserved for Pastor Picano. No weave in my church A Texas Pastor raised some eyebrows when he announced that weaves would no longer be allowed at his church. “Our black women are getting weaves trying to be something and someone they are not. Be real with yourself is all I’m saying,” Pastor A.J. Aamir told AmericaPreachers.com. “I lead a church where our members are struggling financially. I mean really struggling. “Yet, a 26 year old mother in my church has a $300 weave on her head. NO. I will not be quiet about this,” he added. Although the Pastor admitted that he couldn’t legally prohibit any member from wearing a weave, he hoped that his strong objections would be noted. A big Rozay fan This Pastor took the scripture about preaching to sinners very seriously. Youth Pastor Rodney Wills was fired from his position at Mt. Salem Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina after it emerged that he had attended a Rick Ross (rap artist) concert. “We cannot have our leader supporting people of this world who are tearing down the kingdom of God,” the church's deacon, Miles Langley said, according to AmericaPreachers.com. “We know that many saints will have mixed opinions from our actions, but this is not how we do things here at Mt. Salem...We cannot have a pastor praising the world one minute then praising the Lord the next. Period." Well at least now he can go to all the rap concerts he wants. Too much candy for the eye Warning to all future brides: make sure your wedding dress covers all the important bits. Apostle Michael Canty of the Truth Ministries Holiness Church refused to marry a couple after the bride arrived in a dress that was a bit too revealing for his liking. According to www.patheos.com, the pastor informed the bride she would have to cover up her breast area and find a way to add length to the dress if she wanted him to bless their union. The bride then tried to explain to the church leader that she wouldn’t be able to find a more appropriate dress with so short of a notice but apparently Apostle Canty refused to understand and chose to lock walk back to his office instead. Pretoria Pastor convinces congregation to eat grass We all know that humans and animals have some similarities but who would have thought that grazing was one of them? Rabboni Centre Ministries became a trending topic on social media after it emerged that the church leader, Pastor Daniel Lesego had reportedly convinced his members to eat grass in order “to get closer to God”. According to a report on the Christian Post, Lesego explained the ‘grass eating’ by telling the congregation that Jesus had more disciples than the 12 mentioned in the bible adding that they (disciples) had also done new things which were seen as unusual at the time.

18 killed in Mumbai stampede

MuMbai, January 18 (agencies): At least 18 people died in a stampede and about 45 were injured early on Saturday morning in the Malabar Hill area, where an overwhelming crowd from the Dawoodi Bohra community had gathered to pay their last repsects to the departed spiritual leader Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin. Officials from the municipality’s Disaster Management Cell said the incident occurred around 1.30 a.m. Thousands of people had gathered outside the residence of Burhanuddin – Saifee House — in the south Mumbai Malabar Hill area, where his body was kept. Saifee House is located next to Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan’s residence, Sahyadri. Union Home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde expressed profound grief over the incident. “I feel very sorry about the tragic incident and express condolence over the death of the 18 persons,” he told reporters. Shinde said he knew the Syedna personally as he lived near his home in Maharashtra in the early 90s. “Burhanuddin was a very respected religious teacher and always preached about peace and brotherhood,” he added. Mismanagement led to Mumbai stampede

MuMbai, January 18 (agencies): Mismanagement by community leaders and their failure to anticipate the number of people arriving to pay their last respect to the spiritual head of the Dawoodi Bohras led to the stampede in Mumbai on Saturday morning that claimed 18 lives, preliminary police probe has established. Lack of proper management and wrong assessment on the parts of the community leaders about the crowd thronging to take the last glimpse of Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, who passed away on Friday, at his residence in Malabar Hill, caused the stampede, a senior police official said. “Bohra community leaders yesterday informed us that no crowd would be allowed to gather at Syedna’s residence. Sources added that the community leaders and authorities were unprepared for the large number of people who gathered to pay last respects to the spiritual leader. Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh said, “The

gate of the bungalow was closed that led to a stampede. The crowd was very emotional so we had to exercise restrain,” he said. He added that extra force has been deployed to handle the crowd and the Rapid Action Force has also been deployed. Shehr Hakim (75) who had come from Dubai with his family for the funeral

of the Syedna said people were eager to pay homage to their spiritual leader. “Everyone wanted to take Darshan as soon as they could. The crowd was so emotional that it could not be contained. Amid all this, the unfortunate incident took place,” he said. Mr Hakim was able to get a glimpse of the dead leader only in the morning.

Zoeb Hussein (63) who came from Mumbra said he had a narrow escape. “I had stood in the queue for more than two hours before I could enter and pay my respect to the Syedna. There was a huge crowd and all the lanes were packed but i somehow managed to get out. I saw later on television that the stampede had taken place only soon after,”

he said. A municipal official said most bodies were taken to Saifee Hospital nearby. “At least one body was taken to Cumballa Hill Hospital. At least 20 people who suffered injuries were treated and allowed to go,” the official said. Thirty-year old Sayed Hussein came limping out of the Saifee Hospital on

After this, people from the city and its outskirts started gathering,” the officer elaborated. “We were informed about this change in plan only after the messages were sent. We were told about 4,000-5,000 people would turn up at his residence and accordingly security measures were taken. But the figure quickly crossed over 60,000,” the officer said. As the gates of Saifi Mahal were opened and shut abruptly, the grieving crowd tried to barge into the house at the earliest, causing commotion, he said. “Before police could make further security arrangements to manage the unexpected crowd, the unfortunate incident occurred. There were indications that some people died of suffocation and not due to stampede,” he said. Meanwhile, Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh has ordered a detailed inquiry.

Saturday morning. He had fractured his right ankle after having tried to save people during the stampede. “I was caught in the stampede and was trying to help people. Within moments, I couldn’t move as I fell and people walked over my feet,” he said. He had bruises on his feet and arms. “I am in pain but I want to make it in time for

the funeral at the masjid. I will stay at a distance but I will go for sure,” he said. The Syedna died on Friday morning following a cardiac arrest. He was 102 and was the 52nd Dai alMutlaq (head) of Dawoodi Bohras worldwide. Community members from at least 40 countries had gathered outside the Saifee House on Friday night.

new Delhi, January 18 (ians): India Saturday “utterly condemned” the alleged misbehaviour with some Ugandan nationals in the capital by a Delhi minister and his party volunteers and promised “appropriate action” in the matter. New Delhi’s stand on the matter was conveyed to the African envoys from 20 countries by Dinkar Khullar, secretary (West) in the ministry of external affairs, who held a meeting with them in south block. Khullar said the incident was “utterly condemnable” and “cannot be condoned”. He also assured the African envoys that there was no deliberate targeting of the nationals of any country and “should remain an aberration.” He also assured them that the Indian government will take “appropriate action”. The ambassadors of the African countries were called for a meeting following concerns expressed by them over the alleged manhandling of some African nationals Thursday in south Delhi’s Khirki Extension after Delhi Law

Minister Somnath Bharti alleged they were part of a “drug and prostitution den”. Khullar also informed the envoys that the law and order authorities are “deploying extra patrols so that life and property of all residents of Delhi, including foreign nationals, will be safeguarded and a single point office of the Police Commissioner is to be established, specifically for complaints from foreign nationals.” After the meeting, the Deputy Dean of the African group in India and Ethiopian Ambassador to India Gennet Zewide said the attack was an aberration. She also said that she did not feel it was a racial attack. She was talking about the past midnight raid by Bharti and his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) cadres Thursday on the residences of African nationals. Four women from Uganda Friday filed a complaint with Delhi Police alleging they were molested by a group of Bharti’s supporters and one of them said she was forced to give a urine sample by the men in public.

tween India and US over an Indian diplomat, the emergence of Narendra Modi, BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, may cause even more tension between them, according to Time magazine. Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade, whom US authorities charged with visa fraud involving her maid, has returned to India after being granted diplomatic immunity, the influential magazine noted in its upcoming Jan 27 issue. “But don’t expect the relationship to rebound quickly,” Michael Crowley wrote suggesting “In fact, the atmosphere could soon become even more tense - over a far more prominent Indian also embroiled in a visa controversy.” Suggesting that BJP “holds the edge” in the upcoming general election by May, he said that “If the BJP prevails, Modi will be India’s next Prime Minister. “Yet he is persona non grata in the US,” he noted “because of his alleged role in a horrific episode of sectarian violence in February 2002.” “Modi’s critics say he con-

In 2005, the State Department revoked Modi’s visa under an American law that bars a foreign official who “was responsible for or directly carried out ... particularly severe violations of reli-

gious freedom,” Crowley recalled “When Modi had no national profile, the restriction was inconsequential. But can Washington blacklist the leader of India?” he asked. US policymakers are divided, he noted. “A resolution introduced in November in the US Congress calls on the State Department to continue denying Modi

two Muslims.” “Realists, and US business leaders wishing to capitalise on Modi’s openness to foreign investment, say his character should only be a footnote to Washington’s wider relations with New Delhi,” Crowley wrote. “Should Modi win, the Obama administration will be pressured by many at home and abroad to condemn his past and prevent him from visiting the US. But (President Barack) Obama has tended to subordinate principle to the national interest,” he suggested. Noting that “Over the years, the US has done business with plenty of unsavoury leaders, in countries far less friendly than India,” Time said, “By revoking Modi’s visa, the US government has made clear its view of him and the Gujarat rampage.” “But Washington’s ties with New Delhi are too important to be confined through that prism if Modi becomes PM,” it said, suggesting “Both countries need to step forward and not allow Modi’s past to push them back.”

‘Improving economy will be a big challenge’

new Delhi, January 18 (ians): BJP leader Arun Jaitley Saturday blamed the indecisiveness of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the country’s poor economic situation and said it will be a “big challenge” for the BJP to manage the economy “when it comes in power”. “In this government, the real power was with someone, and the government was run by someone else. How can a weak prime minister make the economy strong,” Jaitley said while presenting the economic resolution in the national council meet of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) here. “The economy has been ruined by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and its corruption. It will be a big challenge for us and our allies to bring it back on track when we come in power,” Jaitley, the leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha, said. “The corruption indulged into by the UPA government had drastic effects on the core sectors of the country,” the resolution said. It blamed the UPA of wasting a decade that was crucial for the country. “The country has witnessed a dark decade under the UPA regime,” the resolution said. The UPA inherited a “sound economy” from the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government, and spoiled it. “The country has witnessed a dark decade under the UPA regime,” the resolution read, and added: “Inflation is one of the biggest failures of the economist prime minister.”

new Delhi, January 18 (PTi): Reflecting a change in stance, BJP president Rajnath Singh on Saturday said his party has no objection to Article 370 which grants special status to Jammu & Kashmir if it helps in the development of the state. “J&K is a very serious, very sensitive region for us ... If J&K develops because of Article 370, then we have no objection in keeping it,” he said in his inaugural addresses at the twoday National Executive meet of the party. This marks a change in BJP’s stand as it has been consistently demanding repeal of the Article and has aggressively campaigned for it. However, in a bid to not appear as giving up the issue, Rajnath Singh went on to add that if the Article 370 was a “conspiracy” to stop the state from joining Indian mainstream,

then his party would not accept it under any circumstances. The party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi had earlier last month stated at a rally in Jammu that there should be at least a debate on whether or not Article 370 has benefitted the state. “As per Constitution, the debate will continue whether the Article 370 should end or continue - at least there should be debate whether Article 370 has benefitted J&K or not,” the Gujarat chief minister had said at the rally on December one. BJP had then rejected suggestions that Modi had softened the party’s stand on the issue. “It would be incorrect for anyone to interpret BJP’s challenge for a debate on this issue as a softening of stand on Article 370,” Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley

charges framed against ex-high court judge, 4 others

chanDigarh, January 18 (ians): A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court here Saturday framed corruption charges against former Uttarakhand High Court judge Nirmal Yadav in the multi-million rupee “cash-for-judge” scam. Yadav was present in the court when the charges were framed by CBI court judge Vimal Kumar. Charges were also framed against four others, including Delhi-based hotelier Ravinder Singh, former additional advocate general of Haryana Sanjiv Bansal, Panchkula-based businessman Rajiv Gupta and another person identified as Nirmal Singh. Yadav, who was a judge in the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh

earlier, and the others, will now face trial for corruption. The trial is set to begin Feb 15. The Punjab and Haryana High Court was hit by a scam in 2008, after a packet containing Rs.1.5 million (Rs.15 lakh) in cash was delivered Aug 13 that year at the the Sector 11 residence of a newly appointed high court judge, Nirmaljit Kaur. The judge complained to police and registered a case. Investigators found that the money was meant for Justice Nirmal Yadav, but was delivered at the home of the newly appointed judge by mistake. Yadav was a sitting judge in the high court here when the scam came to light. The ex-judge refused to talk to reporters after charges were framed

against her. “There is no use in talking to you (media),” she said, hurriedly leaving the court complex here. The CBI had booked Yadav and others under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act. A case was registered by the Chandigarh Police initially, and the investigation was later handed over to the CBI. Yadav had tried her best to get out of the case, but her pleas were rejected by the high court and the Supreme Court. Despite objections from Yadav, the Supreme Court had set up an independent inquiry into the case. The Punjab and Haryana High Court later, in 2011, directed Yadav to appear before the trial court.

Obama bans spying on leaders of allies WASHINGTON, JANuAry 18 (reuTerS): President Barack Obama banned U.S. eavesdropping on the leaders of close friends and allies on Friday and began reining in the vast collection of Americans’ phone data in a series of limited reforms triggered by Edward Snowden’s revelations. In a major speech, Obama took steps to reassure Americans and foreigners alike that the United States will take into account privacy concerns highlighted by former spy contractor Snowden’s damaging disclosures about the sweep of monitoring activities of the National Security Agency (NSA). “The reforms I’m proposing today should give the American people greater confidence that their rights are being protected, even as our intelligence and law enforcement agencies maintain the tools they need to keep us safe,” he said. While the address was designed to fend off concerns that U.S. surveillance has gone too far, Obama’s measures fell short of dismantling U.S. electronic spying programs. Even as the White House put the final touches on the reform plan this week, media outlets reported that the NSA gathers nearly 200 million text messages a day from around the world and has put software in almost 100,000 computers allowing it to spy on those devices. Obama promised that

NSA reform is first small step

the United States will not eavesdrop on the heads of state or government of close U.S. friends and allies, “unless there is a compelling national security purpose.” A senior administration official said that would apply to dozens of leaders. The step was designed to smooth over frayed relations between, for example, the United States and Germany after reports surfaced last year that the NSA had monitored the cellphone of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff postponed a state visit to Washington in protest of the NSA spying on her email and cellphone. “The leaders of our close friends and allies deserve to know that if I want to learn what they think about

an issue, I will pick up the phone and call them, rather than turning to surveillance,” Obama said. Still, he said, U.S. intelligence will continue to gather information about the intentions of other governments, and will not apologize simply because U.S. spy services are more effective. Obama is trying to balance public anger at the disclosure of intrusion into Americans’ privacy with his commitment to retain policies he considers critical to protecting the United States. In doing so, he bucked the advice of some U.S. intelligence leaders. Some of his proposals drew skepticism from Republicans in Congress who expressed concerns that he was going too far in reining in essential spying pro-

Go out in the sun to lower BP

LONdON, JANuAry 18 (IANS): Soak up some sun not only for your daily vitamin D dose but also to lower blood pressure, says a thrilling research. Researcher at the Universities of Southampton and Edinburgh in Britain found that sunlight alters levels of nitric oxide (NO) - the small messenger molecule in the skin and blood - reducing blood pressure. “Nitric oxide, known to be abundant in skin, is involved in the regulation of blood pressure. When exposed to sunlight, small amounts of NO are transferred from the skin to the circulation, lowering blood vessel tone,” said Martin Feelisch, professor of experimental medicine and integrative biology at University of Southampton. “As blood pressure drops, so does the risk of heart attack and stroke,” he added in a press release issued by the university. According to Richard Weller of University of Edinburgh, while limiting sunlight exposure is important to prevent skin cancer, minimising exposure may be disadvantageous by increasing the risk of prevalent conditions related to cardiovascular disease. During the study, the skin of 24 healthy individuals was exposed to ultraviolet (UVA) light from tanning lamps for two sessions of 20 minutes each. In one session, the volunteers were exposed to both the UVA rays and the heat of the lamps. In another, the UV rays were blocked so that only the heat of the lamps affected the skin. The results suggest that UVA exposure dilates blood vessels, significantly lowers blood pressure, and alters NO metabolite levels in the circulation, without changing vitamin D levels. “These results are significant to the ongoing debate about potential health benefits of sunlight and the role of Vitamin D in this process,” said professor Feelisch. According to a latest study, 70 percent of the urban Indian population is at risk of being diagnosed with cardiovascular disease owing to sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy eating habits and stress. Cardiovascular disease, often associated with high blood pressure, accounts for 30 percent of deaths globally each year.

WASHINGTON, JANuAry 18 (AFP): Civil liberties and digital rights groups gave a lukewarm welcome to President Barack Obama’s plan to curb US surveillance programs Friday, warning it only partly addressed critical privacy concerns. Activists generally welcomed moves to limit the powers of the US National Security Agency, notably in bulk collection of phone records, but said this should be only the start of the reform effort. Anthony Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, said improved transparency at a secretive court and privacy protection for non-US citizens were “necessary and welcome.” But he said “the president’s decision not to end bulk collection and retention of all Americans’ data remains highly troubling.”

grams. “While we will need much more detail on the president’s new policies before passing final judgment, I am concerned that some of his proposals go too far, limiting our ability to protect the nation with little benefit to civil liberties of Americans,” said Republican Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee. One of the biggest changes will be an overhaul of the government’s handling of bulk telephone “metadata” - lists of million of phone calls made by Americans that show which numbers were called and when. Obama said the program as it currently exists will end. In a nod to privacy advocates, the government will not hold the bulk telephone metadata, a decision that could frustrate

“When the government collects and stores every American’s phone call data, it is engaging in a textbook example of an ‘unreasonable search’,” he argued. Obama proposed that the bulk phone metadata now being collected by the NSA be transferred to an entity outside the government. Possible alternatives include keeping records with telecommunications firms, which are currently compelled to turn them to the NSA, or to deposit them with a third party. But that failed to mollify critics. “The right answer here is to stop the bulk collection completely, not to keep the same bulk data under a different roof,” said Kevin Bankston of the New America Foundation’s Open Technology Institute. In a bid to quell a furor over the

some intelligence officials. A presidential advisory panel had recommended that the data be controlled by a third party such as the telephone companies, but Obama did not propose who should store the phone information in the future. He asked Attorney General Eric Holder and the intelligence community to report back to him before the metadata program comes up for reauthorization on March 28 on how to preserve the necessary capabilities of the program, without the government holding the metadata. In addition, Obama said the U.S. the government will need a judicial review by the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court every time intelligence agencies want to

far-reaching US digital surveillance programs exposed by fugitive NSA contractor Edward Snowden, Obama said he had halted spy taps on friendly world leaders and proposed new protections for foreigners caught in US data mining. That may appease some of Obama’s critics abroad -- although not online freedom activists like WikiLeaks’s Julian Assange, who denounced the speech. And inside the United States, there were concerns Obama did not go far enough. “Other necessary reforms include requiring prior judicial review of national security letters and ensuring the security and encryption of our digital tools,” said Cindy Cohn of the Electronic Frontier Foundation. “But the president’s speech made no mention of these,” she said.

check the database of millions of telephone calls, unless there is a true emergency. “The biggest deal is going to the court each time,” said retired General Michael Hayden, a former director of both the NSA and the Central Intelligence Agency.

SECRET COURTS The usefulness of keeping metadata phone records has been questioned by a review panel appointed by Obama. It found that while the program had produced some leads for counter-terrorism investigators, such information had not proven decisive in a single case. Among a list of reforms, Obama called on Congress to establish an outside panel of privacy advocates for the FISA Court that con-

Learn how humans waLk

NeW yOrK, JANuAry 18 (IANS): Humans have been walking on earth for over a million years and researchers are now close to figuring out how they do it. A research published in the Journal of Experimental Biology outline a specific interaction between the ankle, knee, muscles and tendons that improve the understanding of a leg moving forward in a

way that maximises motion while using minimal amounts of energy. “Human walking is extraordinarily complex and we still don’t understand completely how it works,” said Jonathan Hurst, professor of mechanical engineering at Ohio State University (OSU) in the US. Researchers have long observed some type of highpower ‘push off’ when the

leg leaves the ground, but did not really understand how it worked. The study concluded that there are two phases to this motion. The first is an ‘alleviation’ phase in which the trailing leg is relieved of the burden of supporting the body mass. Then in a ‘launching’ phase, the knee buckles allow the rapid release of stored elastic energy in the ankle ten-

dons, like the triggering of a catapult. “We calculated what muscles could do and found it insufficient, by far, for generating this powerful push off,” said Daniel Renjewski, a postdoctoral research associate in the dynamic robotics laboratory at OSU. The research could find some of its earliest applications in improved prosthetic limbs, said researchers.

Bangladesh reporters held for ‘fabricating’ story

dHAKA, JANuAry 18 (AP): A court in Bangladesh has ordered three journalists of a pro-opposition newspaper held in detention on charges of publishing a false story that alleged Indian security forces had joined Bangladeshi troops in a crackdown before the recent controversial elections. Information Minister Hasanul Huq Inu said Friday that the report by the Bengali-language Inqilab daily was baseless, and the newspaper used a doctored email and fax message to back it up. Police on Friday arrested news editor Rabiullah Rabi, deputy chief reporter Rafiq Mohammad and diplomatic correspondent Ahmed Atique, after raiding their of-

fice on Thursday night. Magistrate Atiqur Rahman ordered the reporters held in detention and set the next hearing for Monday. The reporters, who are being held for violating the Information Technology Act, are seeking their release on bail. The government said it did not stop the publication of the newspaper, but sealed off the press temporarily. The daily continues its online edition. The newspaper published a report Thursday saying that Indian security forces joined Bangladeshi officials during a crackdown on people suspected of launching attacks in the southwestern district of Satkhira ahead of the Jan. 5 election. Satkhira, which borders India, is a stronghold

of the opposition Jamaat-e-Islami party. Authorities said the report was based on rumors and part of propaganda against the government, as the issue of Bangladesh’s relationship with India is sensitive. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina returned to power in a landslide victory Jan. 5, but the vote was marred by violence, a boycott by the main opposition party and low turnout. Political violence has convulsed the country in recent months as opposition activists staged attacks, strikes and transportation blockades to defy the government. Nearly 300 people have been killed since last February. The newspaper has no major influence but is known as pro-opposition.

Thai prime minister struggles to stay in power

BANGKOK, JANuAry 18 (AP): From inside her “war room” in a temporary office at the Defense Ministry, Thailand’s beleaguered Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is watching television feeds of flag-waving protesters trying to bring down her government. The demonstrators have taken over key pockets of central Bangkok, blocking off their territory with sandbag walls guarded by supporters. They refuse to negotiate, and they’re trampling campaign billboards bearing Yingluck’s image amid increasing doubt that the election she called for next month can be held. Yingluck can’t order a police crackdown for fear of triggering a military coup. And she is now facing a serious legal threat: The country’s anti-corruption commission has announced that it will probe her handling of a controversial rice policy, an investigation that could force her from office if it is successful. What’s the best way to deal with it all? “Keep calm. And stay cool,” Yingluck said, flashing a brief smile as she rode an elevator at the Defense Ministry this

siders terrorism cases. The former chief judge of the FISA court had opposed such a step. Members of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence called for more restraint on the NSA. “In particular, we will work to close the ‘back-door searches’ loophole and ensure that the government does not read Americans’ emails or other communications without a warrant,” Senators Ron Wyden, Mark Udall and Martin Heinrich said in a joint statement. Obama made clear that his administration’s anger at Snowden’s revelations has not abated. Snowden, living in asylum in Russia, is wanted on espionage charges, although some Americans would like him to be granted amnesty for

past week, headed for a meeting to monitor the crisis and discuss strategy with top advisers. Thailand has been plagued by sometimes bloody bouts of unrest ever since then-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra — Yingluck’s older brother — was overthrown by the army in 2006 amid charges of corruption and alleged disrespect for the monarchy. The coup touched off a societal schism that in broad terms pits the majority rural poor, who back the Shinawatras, against an urban-based elite establishment that draws support from the army and staunch royalists who see Yingluck’s family as a corrupt threat to their power. The struggle has taken place against what analysts also see as a battle for control over a crucial transition period when the country’s 86-year-old monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, passes from the scene. But for much of it, Yingluck had stayed out of the spotlight. Just three years ago, she was largely unknown — the director of a family real estate business, a political neophyte with no experience in government. Today, she is in the political fight of her life — a

besieged prime minister who cannot use her own office and whose government has been displaced to myriad backup offices across Bangkok because demonstrators have surrounded her ministries. “We’ve had to adapt the way that we work. I have ordered every ministry to adapt,” Yingluck said Thursday. “It’s like we are working by remote.” Protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban — who is wanted by police on charges of insurrection — brazenly vowed to “capture” Yingluck and her Cabinet this past week. The threat is not taken seriously, but Yingluck takes no risks. “I don’t go to anywhere deemed dangerous,” she said, responding to a question about her safety. Since Monday, anti-government demonstrators have tried to keep up the pressure by marching across Bangkok, and seizing parts of the city. The protests have been peaceful, but violence has occurred nearly every night, with shooting attacks at protest venues and small explosives hurled at the homes of top protest supporters, including the city’s governor, a political rival of Yingluck’s. On Friday, a grenade was

hurled at marching demonstrators, killing one man and wounding dozens of people. Suthep, who was in the procession but was not wounded, quickly blamed the government. Yingluck urged the police to quickly make arrests, saying she opposed the use of force and was concerned that the situation was becoming increasingly chaotic. Since assuming the premiership after 2011 elections, Yingluck has struggled to overcome allegations that she is her brother’s puppet. The Pheu Thai party’s landslide victory came largely thanks to Thaksin. The campaign slogan — “Thaksin Thinks, Pheu Thai Acts” — made the party’s political mechanics blatantly clear. Yingluck’s opponents say she is carrying on the practices of her billionaire brother by using the family fortune and state funds to influence voters and cement her grip on power. But she has widespread support among Thailand’s poor majority because of the populist policies that have brought them things like virtually free health care. Last month, Yingluck dissolved

the lower house of Parliament and called Feb. 2 elections to ease tensions. But Suthep is demanding reform before any vote is held. The protesters want to install a nonelected council of “good people” to take power, while Yingluck says the constitution bars her from stepping down as caretaker prime minister and allows no legal means to delay the ballot. The result is deadlock, with no clear way out. “She’s not done a bad job, given that she has responded to everything that has been thrown at her,” said Chris Baker, a political economist who has co-authored several books about Thaksin. “I don’t think there’s very much she can do in terms of negotiation at the moment.” The tone of the protest movement has become venomous in recent weeks. The Thai tradition of politeness has been cast aside, and Yingluck’s femininity, an asset at the start of her term, has been used against her in crude tirades from the protest stage. The strain has been evident, and Yingluck has occasionally teared up in public, once asking: “Do you not want me to set foot on Thai soil anymore?”

exposing secrets they feel needed to be made public. “Given the fact of an open investigation, I’m not going to dwell on Mr. Snowden’s actions or his motivations,” Obama said, making a rare mention of the former NSA contractor by name. “The sensational way in which these disclosures have come out has often shed more heat than light, while revealing methods to our adversaries that could impact our operations in ways that we may not fully understand for years to come,” he added. Obama was silent on a number of his review group’s recommendations, including some that called for a rebalancing of the intelligence agencies’ sometimes conflicting missions to enhance cybersecurity while conducting computer spying and offensive operations. The group had asked the administration to end efforts to weaken cryptography so that spies and law enforcement can more easily break into communications. The panel also sought a wholesale change to the government’s practice of developing or buying information about weaknesses in software design. The White House did not address those points, to the disappointment of outside experts who feel the United States is making Internet security worse. “NSA sabotage of crypto standards was the thing most conspicuously absent for me,” University of Pennsylvania cryptographer Matt Blaze wrote on Twitter.

Alcoholic liver disease linked to body clock

NeW yOrK, JANuAry 18 (IANS): Scientists have found a link between alcoholic liver disease and the circadian clock - a body clock that regulates 24-hour rhythms across cells which is critical to maintain a normal healthy state. The study, using molecular biological approaches and long-term alcohol feeding of experimental mice, revealed that the development of fatty liver disease by alcohol abuse is intertwined with disturbances of the normal operation of the 24-hour clock system located in the cells of the liver. Importantly, this change in the liver clock seems to occur independently from the master clock system located in the brain, said researchers from the University of Notre Dame and the Indiana University School of Medicine in the US. “Liver function changes daily in a rhythmic manner and is coordinated with cycles of feeding-fasting and to the energy demands of the body, such as activity and rest,” said associate professor Giles Duffield from Notre Dame’s department of biological sciences. “These daily rhythms are regulated by the circadian clock within those liver cells, and disturbances to the molecular clock mechanism or poor temporal coordination of the clock with the timing of eating, or the sleep-wake and rest-activity cycle, can lead to illness,” he added. The study suggests that either the circadian clock is important in the actual development of the liver disease or that the development of fatty liver disease disrupts the normal pattern of the clock mechanism. “The findings offer novel insights into how the disease might be manipulated for clinical purposes,” said Suthat Liangpunsakul from the Indiana University School of Medicine’s department of medicine, division of gastroenterology and hepatology.

Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra greets upon her arrival at the office of Permanent Secretary for Defense on the outskirts of Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday, January 17. Yingluck is facing fresh legal troubles after the country’s anti-corruption commission announced late Thursday that it would investigate her handling of a controversial rice policy. Blazers withstand pressure to overcome Spurs

SAN ANTONIO, JANuAry 18 (AP): The Portland Trail Blazers were feeling good about themselves after withstanding a barrage from the San Antonio Spurs. LaMarcus Aldridge had 26 points and 13 rebounds, Wesley Matthews scored 24 points, and Portland overcame San Antonio's second-half rally to beat the Spurs 109-100 on Friday night. "To beat the best team in the West on their floor — that sticks out," Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts said. "We showed a lot of resolve at both ends of the floor. I thought we had a good defensive game throughout, except for the stretch in the third quarter when they hit the 3s." Damian Lillard had 21 points and eight assists and Mo Williams added 13 points as Portland snapped San Antonio's six-game winning streak. Matthews shot 6 for 7 on 3-pointers, including going 3 for 3 in the final 4 minutes to snuff the Spurs' hopes. "My teammates were finding me," Matthews said. "They did the hard job and all I had to do was knock the shots down." Manu Ginobili had a season-high 29 points, and

Boris Diaw and Marco Belinelli added 14 points each for the Spurs. Tim Duncan had 13 points and Tony Parker added 12, but the two combined for just eight points in the second half. "It was really intense," Lillard said. "We both played physical. There were a lot of fouls called, but that was how we knew we were going to win the game. Just keep playing the same way and sticking with it." San Antonio (31-9) still holds the West's best record, but came in with something to prove. The Spurs are aware of the criticism that they can't beat an elite team, having now gone 1-8 against the West's remaining top-five teams and the East's best, Indiana. "No, we don't ignore anything," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "It's like when we started the season the first thing we did was watch Game 6 in Miami (of the NBA Finals, which the Spurs lost in overtime). We look everything square in the eye and talk about what we need to do." The Spurs needed to control Aldridge and Lillard, but struggled to contain either. Portland was controlling the contest

when Popovich was ejected with 7:18 left in the third quarter after drawing two technical fouls during a San Antonio timeout and the Trail Blazers leading 65-55. "We knew eventually they would find their way

back into the game, especially after Pop got tossed," Lillard said. "He looked like he wanted to get tossed because he just kept going off. I knew that that would spark something in their team. They got some calls

they made some shots." Popovich began his rant a minute earlier when Diaw fell to the court defensively after taking a bump from Aldridge that Popovich thought was a foul. Official Mark Ayotte issued the first

technical after Popovich was screaming and following him around. The technical only further incensed Popovich, who was attempting to push aside his assistants to reach Ayotte when official Bill Kennedy

We will not experiment in series against NZ: Dhoni

NAPIEr, JANuAry 18 (PTI): Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Saturday ruled out experimenting too much with his settled team in the series against New Zealand but said the five-match rubber should serve as a good exposure to some of his players before the World Cup. Since Yuvraj Singh is not in the side, there is question mark over the number four spot in the batting order. Dhoni was non-committal about Suresh Raina coming up the order, a role he did not perform with much success against Australia in October. "We will see what suits us best and then we will move ahead. As of now, after the Greg Chappell era, experimentation is something we have done away with. We don't really change too many things anymore. We will give chances to a few players and hopefully they will rise up to the occasion and accept the challenges that they are pushed into," Dhoni said ahead of the seriesopener on Sunday. Dhoni said the series

would be a good for experience since the World Cup will be hosted jointly by Australia and New Zealand. "It's good exposure for our players who have not played in New Zealand before. In the bowling department particularly, there are some new additions to the squad. Wind will be a factor here and when you are exposed to different conditions, you work hard on your game. "So it will be a good experience for them. In turn, it will be good for the team because we will have players who have already played in these conditions and particularly at venues where we will be playing the 2015 World Cup. So it should be a good tour for us," said the Indian captain. Indian team arrived in New Zealand almost a full week ahead of the first ODI and it gave them ample time to reflect on the conditions here and prepare for the month-long trip comprising of five ODIs and two Tests. "Our preparation has been good. We were given very good facilities. The

ground where we practiced, Nelson Park, we were given a centre wicket which was good practice. Net bowlers were also made available to us. We have also looked into each and every aspect of our game, not only batting and bowling, but also fielding because it will play a vital

role," Dhoni pointed out. "When you are batting you have to pick a particular side where you are looking to play your shots. The straight boundaries are quite long and there is a strong breeze, so hitting down the ground will add ten yards. Bowling in this wind can be tiring and also

you need to use its direction well. The grounds are not big, so the fielders need to judge where to stand so that batsmen do not steal doubles from you. We need to be intelligent about how to adapt to conditions here," Dhoni added, talking about the various aspects that the team has been working on. Unlike many grounds in New Zealand, McLean Park doesn't use a drop-in pitch although the stadium is used for rugby matches as well. Since it is the offseason here for rugby, the pitch for Sunday's game was ready ahead of schedule. "The wicket looks good. It is a dry and hard pitch, well suited for ODI cricket. Fast bowlers will be able to get that extra bounce. Intelligent bowlers will be able to use wind to their advantage. Normally the ball swings for 10-15 overs, but here the swing might be prolonged a bit. Our strength in bowling is not pace, but how smartly we can use the conditions. The bowlers will have something from the pitch for sure, but once the batsmen

the freedom to exploit the space between the red and white lines, and the visitors threatened to run riot. They took the lead when Rodriguez made the most of Marcos Alonso's failure to clear his lines, teeing himself up to fire firmly into the bottom corner from the edge of the box with goalkeeper Vito Mannone helpless. It could have been 2-0 with 18 minutes gone when Johnson deflected Luke

Shaw's cross on to the post with Mannone wrong-footed, and Lambert wasted a glorious opportunity three minutes later when he shot across the face of goal from Schneiderlin's pass. Rodriguez should have doubled his tally with 29 minutes played when Rickie Lambert robbed Wes Brown after the defender took a poor first touch and fed him, but he shot tamely at Mannone. But the keeper was beaten again two minutes later when central defender Lovren met Davis' corner ahead of Brown and volleyed home. However, seconds later Johnson crossed from the right for Borini to control and scuff a shot past keeper Boruc, who got a hand to the ball, but could not keep it out. The Saints continued with their progressive approach in the second half and Davis fired over from distance full-back Shaw was allowed to run from his own half and thump a shot into Mannone's midriff. Fellow defender Calum Chambers called up Mannone once again with a speculative 55th-minute effort, and the Italian needed two attempts to collect Rodriguez's effort seconds later after Schneiderlin and Lallana had capitalised on Brown's wayward pass.

Saints throw away win at Sunderland

lONdON, JANuAry 18 (AgENcIES): Sunderland battled back from a poor start to hold Southampton to a 2-2 draw in a pulsating game at the Stadium of Light. Saints dominated the first half and carved out a 2-0 lead thanks to Jay Rodriguez's powerful early strike and a fine finish from Dejan Lovren in the 31st minute, but Fabio Borini quickly responded with a goal out of nowhere to give Sunderland hope.

The Black Cats improved after the break and drew level on 71 minutes when the in-form Adam Johnson slammed a powerful shot past Artur Boruc at his near post. Both sides pushed for a winner in a frantic finale, when Gaston Ramirez and Lovren both had to be stretchered off, but they had to settle for a point apiece as Sunderland inched closer to safety and Southampton ended a dif-

ficult week with a frustrating draw. Mauricio Pochettino's long-term future at Southampton may have been plunged into doubt following the resignation of Nicola Cortese as executive chairman, but the qualities he has developed at the club were fully in evidence as Saints started positively. With Jack Cork anchoring the midfield, Steven Davis, Morgan Schneiderlin and Adam Lallana had

settle down, they will love the pace and bounce on offer," opined Dhoni. India will be looking to defend their number one ranking and for that they need to beat New Zealand, who are ranked eighth currently. It is easier said than done, away from the subcontinent, especially since the hosts have some momentum coming into this contest after beating the West Indies in the two T20s and holding them at 2-2 in the ODIs. "New Zealand have a nice bunch of players who contribute in all departments, be it with the bat and ball, and their fielding is quite good too. They have always done well in major tournaments and are a fantastic side to play against. "They have quite a few new players who bring their own strengths to the table. But if we concentrate on them too much, sometimes you can tend to over plan things. It is important to focus on our strengths and work on our weaknesses," the Indian skipper signed off, sounding cautious as well as optimistic.

issued a second technical. The tirade sparked the fiery Ginobili, who scored 18 straight points to close the quarter and help San Antonio outscore Portland 33-12 following Popovich's ejection. "I got in the game and I had two wide-open shots, both went in," Ginobili said. "Things started to happen. They found me on a 3-point shot. I started to feel more confident and the whole situation was exciting. Things went our way in that third quarter." After starting the game 2 for 8 on 3s, Belinelli and Ginobili made the team's next three attempts to pull San Antonio to 73-66 with 3:31 left in the third. Ginobili closed the quarter by making three free throws after inducing C.J. McCollum into a foul and then driving, hitting a 3-pointer and then driving into the lane from the right side of the 3-point line to the left side of the basket and spinning in a reverse layup with his left hand to give the Spurs a 78-77 lead entering the fourth. Portland regained the lead at 88-87 on Aldridge's 16-foot jumper with 6:21 remaining. After the teams exchanged leads for a few minutes, Aldridge and Mat-

thews proved unstoppable. Aldridge scored eight of Portland's 11 points late in the game, and his jumper gave Portland a 97-93 lead. San Antonio then began to double Aldridge, which left Matthews free to hit from long range. He made three consecutive 3s, with his final giving Portland a 105-96 lead with 1:25 remaining. "We couldn't keep that emotion up," Ginobili said. "Every time we made a run or played good defense, then they would get a 3 or an isolation for Aldridge and a bucket." Ginobili sat for most of Portland's run, with his only points in the final quarter came on a onehand dunk with 31.7 seconds remaining. Lillard only had three points in the fourth, but he had four assists in guiding the team to shoot 60 percent in the quarter. Parker, who wore a compression sleeve on the bruised right shin, had trouble staying in front of Lillard. The secondyear guard had 14 points in the first half and committed just one turnover in 18 minutes. "I wish I was 100 percent tonight, but it happens," Parker said. "I'll play, I'll play on Sunday (at home against Milwaukee). It will all get better with time."

Mahesh Bhupathi out of men’s doubles

mElbOurNE, JANuAry 18 (IANS): Mahesh Bhupathi in all probability played his last men’s doubles match at the Australian Open when he and his American partner Rajeev Ram lost their second round match against second-seeded Alexander Peya of Austria and Bruno Soares of Brazil here Saturday. The Indo-American pair lost in straight sets 4-6, 6-7 (7) in 97 minutes after looking like taking the match into a decisive third set. Bhupathi, 39, a former world number one doubles player and now ranked 36, had announced late last year that this would be his last year on the circuit and that he would only play in select tournaments. Bhupathi is playing the mixed doubles here with Russian Elena Vesnina and they are seeded eighth. The Indian did show sparks of his brilliance but that was not good enough to carry the day. Even Rajeev Ram was patchy and made crucial errors, particularly in the second set tiebreak, though the Indo-American pair saved three match points (3-6). Bhupathi and Ram had a set point at 7-6 but the latter’s backhand volley got the net cord and sailed out. Ram could not hold his serve on the fourth match point to bow out.

arner Bros. chose the Friday before a holiday weekend to announce that Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel" sequel will not come out on July 17, 2015 as had been previously planned. Instead, the Superman versus Batman film, which stars Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel and Ben Affleck as the Caped Crusader, will now arrive in theaters on May 6, 2016. The new date puts the DC Comics adaptation in direct competition with an untitled Marvel film that Disney had already slotted in for that calendar position. "We share the fans' excitement to see DC Comics’ most popular figures, Superman and Batman, together on the big screen for the first time, which will now be arriving in theaters in May 2016," Dan Fellman, War-

ner Bros. president of domestic distribution said in a press release. The sentiment was echoed by Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, president of international distribution for Warner Bros. Pictures. "We know that there is already great anticipation building for the next Super Hero [sic] film from Zack Snyder, and we are equally eager to see what he has in store for Superman and Batman as they share the big screen for the first time ever," she said in the statement. In place of the "Man of Steel" sequel, Warner Bros. will now release Joe Wright's "Peter Pan" on July 17, 2015. Hugh Jackman is reportedly starring in that film as Blackbeard. As THR writer Borys Kit noted on Twitter, the first weekend

in May has traditionally been a Marvel stronghold. Indeed every "Iron Man" film, "Marvel's The Avengers" and Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" all opened during that frame. (This year, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is set for May 2.) In addition to the untitled Marvel film currently slotted for May 6, 2016, Marvel also has "X-Men: Apocalypse" set for May 27, 2016. (The "X-Men" films, of course, are released by Twentieth Century Fox, while the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, which includes the untitled feature, are Disney properties.) By shifting the Batman vs. Superman film off its July 17, 2015 date, Warner Bros. keeps Snyder's project away from "Marvel's The Avengers: Age of Ultron," which is set for release on May 1, 2015.

The pop starlet felt she had stopped being challenged musically before she was 20 but her painful breakup from the 'Never Say Never' singer in January 2013 motivated her to re-evaluate and come back with pop hit 'Come & Get It'. She told Seventeen magazine: ''I questioned the way I looked, acted, sang, and wrote. I started becoming very stale with my music, and I realised that I was doing things for other people. ''Then I turned 20, went through a really bad breakup, and realised I needed to pick up everything. ''I needed to have 'Come & Get It' be amazing. I wanted it all to be me. Wozniacki crashes out of Australian Open MELBOURNE, JaNUaRy 18 (aFP): Unheralded Spaniard Garbine Muguruza overcame her nerves to send former world number one Caroline Wozniacki crashing out of the Australian Open Saturday, continuing her stellar run of form. The 20-year-old won her first WTA title with victory over Czech Klara Zakopalova at this month's Hobart International, an achievement even more impressive in that she was a qualifier. She didn't drop a set from the qualifiers to the final and has stayed on a roll at Melbourne Park, coming from a set down to send the 10th-seeded Wozniacki packing 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. "I worked really hard in the off-season and this form is the result of that," she said, ad-

mitting she was nervous in her first ever Grand Slam third round match. "I was really nervous, it was the third round of a Grand Slam and against a great player. I was only thinking about being aggressive and not being scared." Wozniacki, recently engaged to golf star Rory McIlroy, remains in search of a first major title despite finishing both 2010 and 2011 as world number one. Muguruza's reward is a fourth-round clash with Polish fifth seed Agnieszka Radwanska, who came through three sets against Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. "I will play the same against her," said Muguruza. "I'll be aggressive and just try to do my best." Muguruza's Hobart win saw her sprint up the rankings to a career-best 38, after she recovered from right ankle surgery after Wimbledon that sidelined her for the rest of the year.

Inconsistent Maria into 4th round MELBOURNE, JaNUaRy 18 (aP): Top-seeded Rafael Nadal and two-time defending champion Victoria Azarenka looked as if they were in a hurry to get out for late dinners Saturday while posting straightset victories in their night matches at the Australian Open. Nadal continued his dominance of Gael Monfils, beating the Frenchman for the 10th time in 12 matches in a 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 victory in just over two hours to advance to a fourth-round match against Kei Nishikori. The left-handed Spaniard didn't play here last year during a seven-month injury layoff, and said he was pleased to be back on a night session at Rod Laver Arena. "It's very emotional for me to have the chance to be back here after missing last year," Nadal said. "I think this is my best match of the tournament so far." Azarenka was equally as dominating in beating Yvonne Meusburger 6-1, 6-0 in exactly an hour. Azarenka will play American Sloane Stephens in the next round in the reprise of an acrimonious semifinal here when Azarenka took a

questionable medical timeout that turned the match in her favor. "We left it all last year here," Azarenka said when asked about the rematch. Earlier, the girlfriend and boyfriend pair of Maria Sharapova and Grigor Dimitrov both advanced along with Wimbledon champion Andy Murray and 17-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer. And finally, the op-

she endured for 3 hours, 28 minutes on Thursday. Dimitrov reached the second week at a major for the first time when he converted his fifth match point to beat No. 11-seeded Milos Raonic of Canada 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10). The 22-yearold Bulgarian is considered one of the up-and-coming players on the men's tour, as is Raonic. At the end of the match, the two hugged

Simon 7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-2 and No. 16 Nishikori beat Donald Young, the last American man in the singles draw, 7-5, 6-1, 6-0. Sharapova, who endured the worst of the torrid heat in her secondround match, beat Alize Cornet 6-1, 7-6 (6) to reach the fourth round. The match was played in high humidity but in temperatures of about 22 Celsius (72 Fahrenheit), considerably cooler than the scorching 42 C (108 F) conditions

like old mates at the net. "I think it's a great stepping stone for me to get into that second week," Dimitrov said. Federer had a 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 win over Teymuraz Gabashvili, and three-time finalist Murray reached the fourth round for the sixth straight year with a 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-2 win over No. 26-seeded Feliciano Lopez. Elsewhere, 2008 finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat fellow Frenchman Gilles

here. "For me it's going to be the possibility to have revenge," Tsonga said. Murray, playing only his second tournament since minor back surgery in September, only dropped one service game in a 2-hour, 15-minute match and next faces Stefane Robert, a lucky loser from qualifying, who is into the fourth round for the first time after beating Martin Klizan. Hockey: India lose 1-2 to Belgium, finish 6th at HWL

C M Y K

NEW DELHI, JaNUaRy 18 (IaNS): Two goals in the last four minutes helped Belgium snatch a 2-1 victory over India in the 5-6 position playoff tie of the Hockey World League Final at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium on Saturday. The World No. 5 team finished the tournament fifth while hosts India had to be content with sixth after playing a high intensity match. Both India and Belgium shared almost equal possession throughout the match and penetrated the striking circle at regular intervals. Indian skipper Sardar Singh was in his elements as he duly performed his role of a playmaker passing the ball to the forwards. The hosts had an excellent opportunity to go up on the board when a Yousuf Affan reverse flick in an empty Belgian striking circle just went over the bar in the 13th minute. The World No. 5 team reverted in the 17th and 18th minutes when Sebastien Docklier and Tom Boon almost scored on both occasions. But Indian goalkeeper and man of the match PR Sreejesh stood like a wall and disallowed Belgium from taking the lead. India created several chances but forwards SV Sunil and Yousuf Affan were unsuccessful in converting their opportunities. The Indian defence, however, lapsed several times

and the hosts were lucky to go into the break without a goal down. In the second half both teams took safety-first approach, trying to keep possession. But after a few minutes, Belgium came out all guns blazing to earn three penalty corners in a span of four minutes, the first coming in the 48th minute. But Sreejesh was supreme and stopped everything that came his way. The hosts counter-attacked after the third corner and earned their first penalty corner only to be missed by drag-flicker Rupinder Singh. But the eight time Olympic champions finally broke the deadlock when Nikkin Thimmaiah scored on his 24th birthday. Four minutes to go for the hooter and India looked like bagging the fifth place but Belgium came back to first equalise in the 67th minute through Florent van Aubel and then Boon's penalty corner strike a minute later gave them the decisive lead. Earlier Saturday, Germany walked away with seventh place after defeating Argentina 2-1 in the 7-8 playoff match. Both teams fought hard to avoid finishing last. Playing his 100th match for Argentina, Facundo Callioni opened the scoring in the 16th minute when his skillful backhand stroke defeated German goalkeeper Tim Jessulat.

ray said. "It was very tricky the first couple of matches with the heat, but today was beautiful to play in." Sharapova will next play Dominika Cibulkova, who beat No. 16 Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1, 6-0. Former No. 1-ranked Jelena Jankovic had a 6-4,7-5 win over Kurumi Nara, her third consecutive victory over a Japanese player. Fifth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska had a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 over No. 29 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and will next play Garbine Muguruza of Spain, who ousted former No. 1-ranked Caroline Wozniacki 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Stephens, who had an upset win over Serena Williams in the quarterfinals here last year, reached the fourth round at a fifth consecutive major with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Elina Svitolina. Williams will play her fourth-round match Sunday against 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic. Three-time defending champion Novak Djokovic plays Fabio Fognini in an afternoon match on Rod Laver Arena.

Thunder edge past Warriors

Oklahoma City Thunder small forward Kevin Durant (35) drives to the basket as Golden State Warriors small forward Draymond Green (23) defends during the fourth quarter of an NBA basketball game Friday, Jan. 17 in Oklahoma City. (AP Photo)

OKLaHOMa CITy, JaNUaRy 18 (aP): Kevin Durant drained three 3-pointers in 75 seconds. And when the crowd wanted even more, the NBA's leading scorer responded. Durant poured in a career-high 54 points in an incredibly efficient performance, helping the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Golden State Warriors 127121 on Friday night. The 6-foot-9 forward had 11 points during one two-minute stretch in the fourth quarter, powering

the Thunder to a 17-point lead. With the crowd of 18,203 chanting ''MVP! MVP!'' he made two foul shots with 2:45 remaining to establish a new careerbest scoring total. ''When you've got it going, I look at the bench and see how my teammates are reacting, and that just gives me an extra push,'' Durant said. ''Then, I hear the fans.'' Durant made 19 of 28 field goals and 11 of 13 free throws in his third straight game with at least

36 points. ''As a leader, my main objective is to serve my teammates, help them out,'' he said. ''Some nights, I've got to put it up, I've got to score. Some nights, I've got to do other things. Tonight, they found me and I was able to hit a few shots. I just tried to do as best as I can to lead the team and lead us to victory.'' It was the kind of performance that gets fans fired up about postseason awards in midJanuary. ''It's premature,'' Durant

said. ''It's way too early in the season. I try not to think about that type of stuff. Of course, as a player, you'd love to win an MVP award, but I can't take my focus off the team. Every day, I've just got to keep chipping away, keep enjoying the process, and we'll see what happens.'' Serge Ibaka had 21 points and eight rebounds, Reggie Jackson scored 14 points and Kendrick Perkins added 12 rebounds for the Thunder (30-10), who won for the third time in four games. Oklahoma City shot 58 percent from the field and scored a season-high point total. Stephen Curry had 37 points and 11 assists, and Klay Thompson added 26 points for the Warriors (2516), who shot 52 percent but simply couldn't match up with Durant. ''We battled him for the most part, and he got hot in the fourth and knocked down some big shots for them,'' Warriors center Andrew Bogut said. ''There's a reason why he's a perennial All-Star and future Hall of Famer, and possibly MVP this year.'' Golden State coach Mark Jackson was disappointed with his team's defense. ''We're a good enough defensive team to give a little better effort, fight a little bit harder,'' Jackson said. Oklahoma City led 39-32 at the end of the first quarter after shooting 78.3 percent from the field. It had a 71-65 advantage at the break after a season high for points in a half for the Thunder.
