Naga Hoho, Ahom Royal Society appeal for ‘peace and normalcy’ DiMaPur, JaNuary 18 (MexN): A joint meeting of the Naga civil society (Naga Students’ Federation, Naga Peoples’ Movement for Human Rights and Naga Council Dimapur) under the aegis of the Naga Hoho and the Ahom Royal Society was held today at the Bookmarc Conference Hall here. Following a “threadbare discussion” over the prevailing situation in Karbi Anglong, the house viewed that “normalcy and peace must be restored in the region at the earliest since both communities have co-existed in the past as indigenous people,” stated a joint appeal signed by president of the Naga Hoho, P. Chuba Ozukum and working president of the Ahom Royal Society, Kamala Rajkonwar. The house also appealed to both the communities to “shun all sorts of violence and bloodshed between brothers once and for all and built confidence among the people.” It “strongly” felt that both the Assam state Government and the Central Government should “initiate towards removing ethnic clashes and bring permanent solution at the earliest.”

‘Political understanding and vision is indispensable’

DiMaPur, JaNuary 18 (MexN): Ato Kilonser of the NSCN/GPRN, Th. Muivah, has expressed “sincere and deepest appreciation” on behalf of the Collective Leadership towards the Sumi Aphuyemi Kukami Hoho (SAKH)—the apex organization of Sumi Aphuyemi—representing the Pughoboto area and “all others conscientious Sumi brothers and sisters for the bold and courageous stand you have shown for the cause of our people.” His message appre-

ciated the “wisdom you have displayed during the treacherous situation that crossed the threshold of your homeland recently which led to the unfortunate evacuation of our designated camp at Mukalimi that was mutually agreed with the Government of India in the current IndoNaga cease-fire period with the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN).” Stating that “political understanding and vision is indispensable to a nation’s survival,” Muivah

said that “History will remember and respect the courage you have displayed in standing single-handedly for the cause of our nation.” Acknowledging the role of the Sumis from Pughoboto area in Naga history, the Ato Kilonser noted that “The decision taken by you is most precious to our history.” “And today you have proved yourself in spite of the grim situation created by few persons with vested interest that has unwittingly become the joy of our ad-

DiMaPur, JaNuary 18 (MexN): Student bodies could play a lead role in refining the education system, said retired IAS officer K. Khekiye Sema while gracing the 36th general conference of the Western Sumi Students’ Union (WSSU) at Khekiho village this morning as speaker. Student bodies should do this especially in the village areas which he thought is the basic and primary priority in the making of an educated society. He challenged the students to lead upfront in cleaning up the “mess” in the education institutions and do away with practice of proxy

teachers and recruitment of “unqualified and insincere teachers.” Khekiye Sema said that God has created everyone equal but whoever makes the best use of abilities gets ahead in life and prospers. In the same manner, he said students change their attitude by thinking out of the box and prepare themselves to become leaders of tomorrow. He said that the world is moving much too fast and with the advancement of the world, students should focus attention in maintaining strict discipline, spend more time in learning com-

puters and other advanced subjects in order to achieve success in life and to help in economic growth. Greeting the students on the occasion, Isawoto Zhimomi, president, Western Sumi Kukami Hoho, said success is for those who work hard and now is the time for them to equip themselves with good education. He encouraged the students to value their tradition and to give importance to promotion of one’s mother tongue. Exhorting the gathering, former president of Sumi Kiphimi Kuqhakulu, Zhevihe Z. Sumi stressed

versaries,” he wrote, adding that they have stood their ground on “national principle.” Asserting that “History will remember with honour the act of valor taken by you in the right time and saved the present and future glory of our people,” Muivah affirmed that “This wise decision to uphold the national interest is once again being demonstrated by you. All the sensible Naga people are surely proud of the decisive and significant decision taken by you.” Full text on page 4

JaiPur, JaNuary 18 (iaNS): China has the credentials to rule the world, said a country expert, but was outvoted by a number of other distinguished authors and thinkers who held the question was unnecessary and contenders should instead concentrate on providing their people a quality life. “China is setting a challenge to the world... its is an obvious but necessary point that economic power is not everything but is very significant,” said Rana Mitter, a professor of the history and politics of modern China at the Oxford University’s Faculty of Oriental Studies, at a session “Who will Rule the World?” on the second day of the Jaipur Literary Festival Saturday He quipped it was ironic that he was the second ethnic Bengali was advocating an east Asian power as a world leader, noting the first had been Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. “That didn’t turn out very well,” he said. China was ahead of India by a long gap, said Mitter, adding three factors that made it a contender were rooted in economy and geography. “It is the

fastest growing economy in the world, its occupies a crucial geopolitical space in the economically significant Pacific area, as well as having impact over countries all over the globe,” he said. Chinese author Xiaolu Guo, who was also on the panel, however pointed out that there was one way China lacked credentials - in culture. Contending that China was a major force economically, she said the same could not be said of it on the cultural front. “We all are speaking in English, not in Chinese... and the Chinese way of life is confined to China itself,” she said. In his comments, renowned sociologist Dipankar Gupta said the question was “damning. “Two powers (US and USSR) tried to do that and made a mess of the world,” he said. “For India, the question is how we can rule ourselves,” he said, countries should be judged on what they can deliver to their people. Gupta said the Nordic

‘Govt mulling check on social media’

PatNa, JaNuary 18 (Pti): Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Saturday drew attention toward alleged “misuse” of social media in forking old “provocative” photographs to foment communal riots and said his ministry was mulling to put a check on it. Shinde said in an indirect reference to Muzaffarnagar riots. The minister was addressing a function at the launch of a Hindi newspaper here. “Recently there was some provocative items about Northeast and strict action was on the need to preserve and taken,” Shinde said. “Seeing the evil impact promote cultural identity. Also sharing greetings with the students on Friday evening, Jolly K. Awomi pointed out the contribution of women towards society and called on the girl students to always uphold the “moral values and essence of a woman” besides attaining good education. She said the present generation is an age of prosperity and advancement and which can come only through education and hard work. More than a thousand student representatives from Western Sumi areas are attending the conference.

countries scored how in this respect and were not concerned with questions like this. Colombian author Oscar GuardiolaRivera, who has written “What if Latin America ruled the world?”, said if this came about, then the world would have “great dancing and better football and be more happy too”. He said the question was wrong, and repeated assumptions that had led to the crushing of the creative period of the 1960s and 1970s. “Countries which make the most cars, have the largest per capita incomes, and the biggest guns, have not changed the picture at all. He advocated that people should think that they were not only historical agents, but geological too, and how their choices and decisions affected the environment. “We should recognise that nature also has rights and is not simply there for the taking.” Lord Meghnad Desai said the problem was that the thinking was still in terms of nation-states. “Who will rule the world? Its not India or China .... Google, Microsoft and Coca Cola do already,” he said.

of social media which is taking the society on a wrong direction we are thinking of imposing a check on them,” the Union Home minister said. Shinde lamented “twisting” of facts in the name of investigative journalism and said it was a challenge for the media to uphold honest journalism. “There is a question mark today on how much truth media reports give… its a big challenge for newspapers to maintain honesty of journalism,” he said. Shinde said the print media also faces challenge from faster mode of delivery of information on Internet.

sunanda’s death was unnatural, body had injury marks: Doctors

New Delhi, JaNuary 18 (iaNS): Mystery surrounded the death of Sunanda Pushkar, wife of junior HRD minister Shashi Tharoor, with doctors at AIIMS Saturday saying that the 52-year-old died an “unnatural, sudden death” with her body bearing “injury marks”. Police investigators, however, said that “it could be a case of drug overdose or overdose of sleeping pills” but hastened to add that things would be clear only after the detailed autopsy report. Police also said that the couple had a “verbal spat” during their flight from Thiruvananthapuram to Delhi on Tuesday. In the hotel too they were arguing, which was disclosed by the housekeeping staff to police during investigation. Tharoor, 57, who was himself admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for 11 hours after he complained of chest pain Friday, broke down many times. He accompanied Pushkar’s body in the ambulance to their residence at 97, Lodhi Estate and then later to the crematorium.

Speaking to reporters after twohour long postmortem, Sudhir Kumar Gupta, head of the department of forensic medicine at AIIMS said: “After post-mortem examination, we found that it was a case of sudden unnatural death. “There were certain injury marks on the body. Since the investigating agency is probing the issue and there are certain issues with the injury, the details cannot be revealed,” Gupta,

who was part of a three-member team that conducted the autopsy, added. However, doctors said the real cause of death can only be ascertained once the laboratory test result of biological samples are received. He also said that samples for toxicological analysis, which means ruling out any poison and pathology of the heart, has been preserved. But police sources told IANS that the death could be “a case of drug overdose”. Police will also take a statement from Tharoor, the Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram. Doctors at a Kerala hospital where Pushkar was undergoing treatment said that she did not had any grave illness. At the Lodhi Road crematorium, Pushkar’s son and father P.N. Das were inconsolable. Both at the mortuary and at the cremation ground Pushkar’s son broke down several times. But whenever Tharoor tried to console him, Shiv moved away. This happened many times. A magisterial enquiry has already been ordered in the death as the couple got married in August 2010.
