DIMAPUR, JANUARY 31 (MExN): Chairman of the NSCN (IM), Isak Chishi Swu today asserted that “unity for the Nagas is a must,” and that “it should be for the cherished goal.” Swu was addressing the 34th anniversary of NSCN Day, held at Council Headquarters Hebron on Friday. Stating that the NSCN (IM) is principle based, Swu said that “any reconciliation move that betrays the principle is a roadblock.” “Unity of people without orientation to the future is like a ship without radar. Unity must address the issue,” he added. Swu noted that of late,
the Indian state has adopted “the neo-colonial policy of killing the Nagas through the Nagas and subduing the Nagas through the Nagas.” He added that all state machineries are set to “colonize” the Nagas in the name of development and security of India . . .” He further lamented that Nagalim has been made the “killing field of the Indian armed forces,” and as such, asserted that “resistance to it, in one form or the other, is a must, not a choice.” While recalling former Prime Minister of India, PV Narasimha Rao’s statement that “military solution is ruled out,” Swu said that
present peace process between the Government of India and the NSCN “on the basis of the three agreed terms is ground breaking.” “Recognition of the entity of the Nagas, unique history and situation of the Nagas are landmarks in history,” he stated. Swu iterated that “NSCN will not go for any kind of solution foregoing our principles,” and asserted that “It is for a negotiated settlement that respects mutual rights and interests.” He added that “No policy and no strategy will ever save our history, culture, identity, land and political future if our principle is murdered.” Full text on page 4
KOhIMA, JANUARY 31 (MExN): The Nagaland state government organized a farewell programme for the outgoing Chief Secretary, Alemtemshi Jamir on January 31 at the Secretariat roof top, Kohima. Speaking at the programme, Alemtemshi asserted that bureaucracy still holds the actual realms of power and exhorted the gathering to work with a sense of teamwork. He narrated instances where he interfaced with organizations outside Nagaland but observed that the kind of human relationship available in Nagaland could not be compared elsewhere. Describing the emotional bonding of the Nagas as the greatest strength, Jamir
felt that this aspect needs to be built up and carried forward. Opining that Nagas are living amidst much confusion, he observed that “working in two sets of identity is the biggest challenge of bureaucracy and we need to think clearly with a correct philosophy.” Speaking on behalf of the Government, Additional Chief Secretary & Finance Commissioner, Toshi Aier described the former Chief Secretary as a person with sharp mental acumen, especially in developmental activities. Toshi observed that Jamir is a man who has deep concern for his fellow Nagas and is accessible as an administrator. Highlighting the Bamboo, Honey and many

told the media. Deputy Commissioner of Police P. Karunakaran said “a compromise was struck between the youths and the shopkeepers at the police station” and all of them were then allowed to leave. A relative said Tania had injuries on his neck and his lip was torn. His friends took him to the All India Institute of Medical Science where he died Thursday evening. The incident came to light Friday. Tania had come to Delhi to meet his elder sister who studies in Delhi University. Takam Sanjoy, MP from Arunachal Pradesh, said: “A delegation headed by Rajya Sabha MP Mukut Mithi will meet the prime minister Saturday and discuss the incident. This type of discrimination in the form of racism won’t be tolerated. “We will discuss the matter with the home minister too and discuss the way Delhi Police handled the whole incident,” he added. Delhi’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) blamed Delhi Police for the death. “The way police picked him up and then dropped him at the same spot needs to be looked into,” AAP spokesperson Dilip Pandey said. Police said they were questioning Farhan and Akram to get to the bottom of the matter. Angry students from the northeast in Delhi have threatened a protest Saturday.
NEw DElhI, JANUARY 31 (IANS): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Friday named over 20 top politicians including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as “corrupt”, and attacked him and BJP’s Narendra Modi for spending crores on creating a “brand”. Addressing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national executive here, Kejriwal outlined the party’s objective vis-a-vis the Lok Sabha polls: “We have to ensure that no corrupt person is elected to the parliament.” Reading out what seemed to be a prepared list at a packed auditorium at the Constitution Club, Kejriwal said he had a list of “corrupt people” in politics. “I have made a list of corrupt people. This is just the beginning and the list will grow. “I am presenting the names to you, and you decide whether these people should be elected to parliament or not.” Kejriwal went on to name former BJP president Nitin Gadkari, cabinet ministers Sushikumar Shinde, P. Chidambaram, Salman Khurshid, M. Veerappa Moily, Kapil Sibal, Kamal Nath, Sriprakash Jaiswal, Praful Patel and Sharad Pawar, Congress MP Suresh Kalmadi, BSP chief Mayawati, Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, central minister Farooq Abdullah, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, DMK’s Kanimozhi,
BJP’s Ananth Kumar and B.S. Yeddyurappa and BJP MP Anurag Thakur. As he finished reading the list, the nearly 400 AAP leaders and senior members gathered from all over India roared “No!” in unison in response to his earlier question whether these people should be voted to parliament. After he finished with the names, a section of the audience took Congress vice
gress and the BJP should make it public from where they get the financial resources on building the image of their prospective prime ministers. “We have to ensure that no corrupt person is elected to parliament.” Amid intermittent clapping, the chief minister took the Congress -- which props up his government -and the BJP to task for what he said were their failures despite having ruled Delhi in the past. “Electricity charges have increased in the last five years. People wanted a CAG audit. But the (two) parties refused to get an audit done. “We ordered an audit within five days (of taking power),” Kejriwal said. The activist-turned-politician also condemned the BJP and the Congress for merely demanding all these years a probe into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots that left hundreds dead. “We came to power, and I met the Lt. Governor some days back to demand a probe.” On the Lok Sabha election, Kejriwal said it did not matter in how many constituencies the AAP fielded candidatessincetheparty’smain goal was to fight corruption. “Our aim should be to ensure that not a single corrupt person is in parliament,” he said. “Also, no family should have a hold on it (parliament). “The upcoming elections won’t be an ordinary election. It will definitely bring about a change,” Kejriwal said to thunderous applause.
Says Rahul Gandhi is ‘corrupt’; attacks Narendra Modi for spending crores on creating a “brand” president Rahul Gandhi’s name. Prompted, Kejriwal took Gandhi’s name too, only to be greeted by his supporters’ vocal approval. An AAP spokesman later told IANS that Kejriwal did not have Gandhi’s name on his list of “corrupt people” but took his name after being prompted by party delegates. Kejriwal, who took over as Delhi’s chief minister Dec 28, went on to attack Modi -- the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate -- and Rahul Gandhi over their campaign expenditure. “They spend Rs.500 crore for Modi’s brand. Will those who spend so much on brand ever be able to give an honest government?” asked Kejriwal. Kejriwal said the Con-

NEw DElhI, JANUARY 31 (IANS): A 19-yearold son of an Arunachal Pradesh Congress legislator died here after being beaten up by two shopkeepers following a row over his appearance and clothing, police said Friday. The brutal attack on Nido Tania took place at the crowded Lajpat Nagar I market in south Delhi Wednesday afternoon, leading to internal and other injuries that caused his death in a hospital Thursday. The death, dubbed a “racial attack” by activists, caused outrage, with parliamentarians from the northeast deciding to lodge a protest with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday. The Delhi government ordered a probe into the “murderous assault”. Police registered a case of murder and nabbed the two accused, Farhan and Akram, who are in their 20s and run the Rajasthan Paneer Shop. It all began when Tania, a student of Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar, and a friend approached the shop seeking directions. Farhan and Akram reportedly made fun of Tania’s hairstyle and clothes. The youngster had coloured his hair blonde and wore red trousers. DIMAPUR, JANUARY 31 (MExN): Various Rengma bodies have stated that the Rengmas in Karbi Anglong, Assam are undergoing a systematic process of “dehumanization” through state policies, which have adversely affected their political, physical and cultural footprints in the area. In a memorandum submitted to the Assam Governor on Thursday, the Rengma Naga Peoples’ Council, Assam; Rengma Naga Students’ Union, Assam and the Rengma Gaon Bura Committee, Assam pointed to various factors through which “dehumanization” of the Rengmas has taken place. It lamented that since the 1950s, the Rengma in KA have been “systematically sidelined from the decision making processes.” Besides the three Rengma representatives nominated to the then United Mikir and North Chachar Hills District Council (in 1952, 1971, 1962 and 1989), the memo stated that for the last 25 years, the Rengmas have been unrepresented. It added that the Rengma areas in KA “were systematically kept backward so as to depopulate us.” It pointed out that the Rengma inhabited areas still lack basic amenities and infrastructure, forcing many to work as unskilled laborers in other places. This combined with high infant

mortality rates contribute to the dwindling population of the Rengmas, stated the memo. It further cited “an absence of any semblance of governance in areas of development and law and order” in the area. It then stated that the Rengmas in KA are “coerced to embrace the Karbi identity to wipe off any linkages” to their heritage. Citing the general backwardness of the Rengmas, economic disparity between the two communities and their lack of political identity, the memo stressed on the need to accord constitutional pro-
tection to the Rengmas. It added that the rise of Karbi militancy added another dimension to the plight of the Rengmas, through illegal taxes and direct threats. The memo further pointed to “systematic non interventionist government policies” through diversion of development funds, centrally sponsored schemes and human resource development away from Rengma inhabited areas. In view of these said circumstances, the Rengma organizations called for the “rectification of the dehumanizing episode through creation of Rengma Hills
Autonomous Council to check the plight of Rengma Nagas of Assam or the demand for Rengma Naga political identity in Assam.” This, it said, meant the “bifurcation of the Rengma Hills from Karbi Anglong based on the original boundary of the Rengma Hills and Rengma Mouzas.” It further affirmed that the Rengma Hills “shall be the homeland of the 28 non Karbi communities, including Rengmas, Adivasis, Kukis, Nepalis, Ahoms and mainland Indian communities, with its headquarters at Bokajan.”

I also plead to the Union ministry of home affairs to institute an independent enquiry into the incident," the CM said, adding, "The situation needs to be handled with utmost care by both Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to prevent recurrence of violence. We must maintain the age-old relations between the two states." "I have written to Assam's CM, requesting him to take adequate steps to ensure safety and security of people of both sides," the statement added.
test, blocked NH-52 at Borgang in Sonitpur district, which is the only lifeline to Arunachal capital Itanagar. "We lifted the general blockade at 4.30 pm but the
economic blockade against movement of goods will continue till the culprits of Wednesday's killings are nabbed," said KMSS president Akhil Gogoi.
The blockade, however, will not affect the small western part of the mountain state where Tawang and the headquarters of 5th Mountain Division
are located. A source said, "On January 24, MHA sent advisories to the two chief secretaries that there was a build-up of an armed group in Arunachal Pradesh and there could be an attack on Assam villagers. The two chief secretaries were asked to take necessary preventive measures." When the attack took place at Chauldhuwa village on Wednesday afternoon, a handful of forest protection force personnel were deployed at Behali Reserve Forest. In Behali, CM Tarun Gogoi on Thursday said a permanent border outpost would be set up at Chauldhuwa, as well as at other sensitive border areas, the CM's office said. It added that the CM will ask for a CBI probe into the Wednesday killings at Behali Reserve Forest.

guwahati, January 31 (ani): The anti-talk faction of the rebel National Democratic Front for Bodoland (NDFB) is under pressure to abandon its insurgent activities. Khundrapkam Pradipkumar
iMPhal, January 31 (tnn): The Manipur cabinet has decided to gift HIV positive Manipuri bodybuilder Khundrapkam Pradipkumar something which matches his contributions and achievements and is a befitting recognition for his struggle against
the scars of HIV - a suitable government job. The government has similar plans for five climbers who scaled Mount Everest and four outstanding film personalities. A brand ambassador of the Manipur Aids Control Society (Macs), Pradip had re-
vealed his status after winning senior Mr Manipur title in December, 2007. Besides winning Mr South Asia title in Mr South Asia Body Building Championship held in Ludhiana and a bronze in Mr World in Bangkok in 2012, Pradip also bagged silver and a bronze in different national championships and stood 8th in Mr World competition earlier. Chaired by chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh, the cabinet met on Wednesday evening and resolved to offer Pradip (45) the post of Physical Education Teacher ( PET) in the youth affairs and sports department, a source said. titabor, January 31 (ani): The construction of a border road between Assam and Nagaland in the Titabor subdivision of Jorhat District is aimed at benefitting villagers. The construction of a 23-km-long road from Gauri Chauwa under the Titabor sub-division to New Sonowal by the state public works department is in full swing. There are 17 villages within this stretch, mainly engaged in agriculture. Earlier, the villagers used to face many problems in transporting goods and availing services. The construction of the road as well as seven new bridges has come as a ray of hope for the people who are expecting their lives to improve now. The project has been allotted a budget of Rs. 20 crores. Rupjyoti Kurmi, the MLA representing Mariani Constituency, said:"I would like to request the central and state governments to give more funds for the border areas. It will be good for the government also and for the people also." Reshmi Gogoi, a shopkeeper, said: "If a proper road is there, we will be benefited a lot. I can run the shop in
a better manner, as I will get more customers. My nine member family relies on my business. So, it will be good." The construction of the road has given hope of better business to this group of students from Kherimiya village who started vegetable farming recently. These youngsters, who are from poor families, have taken up farming to support their education and to supplement their family income. Niteyen Nath Gogoi, a student, said: "The construction of this road on the Nagaland border will benefit us a lot. Earlier, we used to face many problems due to lack of any means of transportation, as vehicles couldn't come here. This road will help all those who are engaged in farming. People can easily travel, transportation will be easy." Infrastructure development is necessary to facilitate growth and economic prosperity in any region. The government has been laying considerable emphasis on infrastructure projects in the Northeast so as to improve the living condition of the people.

through the Nagas. All the state machineries are set to colonize the Nagas in the name of development and security of India when the Nagas have never ever been a security threat to India. As Nagalim has been made the killing field of the Indian armed forces for so long resistance to it in one form or the other is a must, not a choice. The patriots under the leadership of the NSCN put up tough resistance against the aggression of the Indian and Burmese states for decades. Ultimately, Gen. Shankhar Roy Choudhury, the then Chief of the Indian Army made a historic statement, “Military solution is not possible.” Mr. P. V. Narasimha Rao, the then Prime Minister of India stated, “Military solution is ruled, out.” It was a U-turn approach from military to political. The present peace process being held between the Government of India and NSCN on the basis of the three agreed terms is ground breaking. Recognition of the entity of the Nagas, unique history and situation of the Nagas are landmarks in history. No one should doubt about it that the NSCN, the authentic organization of the Naga people, is a recognized entity. It is a member of the UNPO, the organization of the dominated peoples and nations of the world. It is also an associate member of the London-based PNSD (Parliamentarians for National Self-determination). The NSCN is a party to the ‘Geneva Call’ an organization that works under the UN. The collective leadership was honored to speak in the Au-
gust meetings of the UN for a number of times. NSCN is principle-based. Our national revolution is principlebased. Our politics of negotiation is also principle-based. NSCN will not go for any kind of solution foregoing our principles. It is for a negotiated settlement that respects mutual rights and interests. We know for sure that our future is in our principle. No policy and no strategy will ever save our history, culture, identity, land and political future if our principle is murdered. Our reconciliation and unity move is principle-based. Any reconciliation move that betrays the principle is a roadblock. Unity of people without orientation to the future is like a ship without radar. Unity must address the issue. Unity among the Nagas is a must, but it should be for the cherished goal. Our people understand that NSCN fights for a cause. When NSCN negotiates, it is also for a cause and it is running a national government for a cause. It is the decision of the NSCN that it will always take care so that it does not make mistake in its conduct of affairs. Our people should bear with us if and when there is commission and omission here and there. However, be it informed that NSCN is strongly opposed to any political move by a section of people or group that deviates from the national stand. We must beware of the wolves in sheep’s clothing. NSCN will always be loyal to the nation and the Lord. KUKNALIM!
ENPO objection to Nagaland govt clarification on Rongmei tribe recognition
A
s fellow Naga family the ENPO is absolutely for and in support of all Naga communities/brethren regardless from where ever they hail or are domiciled in terms of needs and difficulties, or for that matter, are even ever ready to shoulder responsibilities and extend all possible help to one another as much as we may also so need. To this matter, to put in record straight, the ENPO is absolutely for all possible moral and practical support to the Rongmei Naga brethrens in their difficulties, and is equally willing to go to any extend to defend and uphold the rights of the Rongmei Nagas for their social, political, economic rights. To supplement on the statement as above, the ENPO of the six tribes of Eastern Nagaland held a meeting of the Central Executive Committee which is the highest decision making body of the ENPO on the 4th of May, 2013, and whereby a resolution was adopted to facilitate the dif-
ficulties and aspirations of the fellow Rongmei Nagas by fully supporting them to avail ‘indigenous certificate’ in the state of Nagaland for all practical purposes. However, the house of the CEC equally resolved to oppose and object the recognition of the Rongmei as a tribal status in the state of Nagaland for all practical hurdles and difficulties, and for which the ENPO would like to make our stand clear to our Rongmei Naga brethrens that the Eastern Nagas of Nagaland state should not be misunderstood or misconceived in an otherwise manner. Therefore, the ENPO would once and for all like to make the stand of the six tribes clear to the government of Nagaland and the department concerned, and to again equally put on record that, while we fully support the status of fellow Rongmeis in Nagaland whose ancestors were listed in 1963 E-Roll for the status of indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland state as such, and to sub-
sequently avail ‘indigenous certificates’ only for all practical purposes and privileges thereof. The ENPO however continues to oppose the proposition of the recognition of the fellow Rongmei Nagas as schedule tribe in Nagaland state based on the resolution as above for all practical difficulties and hurdles. It may further be mentioned that, the resolution as mentioned above was adopted under the aegis of the CEC of the ENPO, which was attended by all officials of the ENPO, members of CEC, Federating Tribal Presidents and colleagues, Presidents and colleagues of all Frontal Organisations such as ENSF, ENWO, Steering Committee Members, Advisors, prominent leaders and Seniors Members. A Response
t the outset, let me congratulate K. Tia Longchar for his excellent article: “Looking Beyond Statehood” which appeared in The Morung Express on January 30, 2014. The need of the hour for the Nagas is to look beyond oneself, one’s tribe, one group and beyond the imposed State. The solution to our protracted political problem lies largely in our own hand if only we shed our selfishness and imbibe a higher vision. We can achieve our common aspiration only though a united voice and concerted action as a longest suppressed people group on the planet earth. It will be futile for a single ant to wrestle with an elephant but together with faith in the God of the Bible, we can move mountain. Huzo Meru, Zubza
Importance of life insurance in financial planning
L
ife is a combination of two words Life +Insurance. Life is the most precious element on earth and “insurance” protection against hazards /risk/uncertainty. Thus life insurance protects our dependents against the loss of life of the bread winner. No one wants to die but everyone has to die and that too at an uncertain time and unknown to all. This uncertainty of death gave rise to the concept of life insurance. No one knows what will happen in the next moment. This uncertainty in life brings a moral compulsion for the bread winner to insure himself for his loved ones, so that even after his death, the life of the dependents doesn’t get jeopardized. In the present economic scenario human needs can be structured in three forms:Financial aspect Finance plays a very important role in a person’s life. Thus, financial security becomes important and therefore full attention should be given to this area. Here, Insurance plays the best role in fulfilling these needs. Yet even now people are not willing to take insurance by choice. Insurance products are sold. The reason behind this could be that benefits actualize after a long term and insurance is an intangible product. The most valuable capital investment of an individual is his character, his knowledge, his expertise, his business, his ability to work and earn. Life insurance premium is merely the cost of perpetuating this capital value of life for self in old age and for your family should something unfortunate happen. In addition, it is a saving for old age, for children’s education and marriages etc. Hence, Life insurance is the basic of any financial investment. Emotional aspect Insurance is significantly concern with emotions. Insurance is meant to cater to unpredictable and deferred needs. It should however be purchased well before its need arises. It is of little use digging a well when thirsty, or trying to lock the stable when horses have fled. People generally keep on procrastinating purchasing insurance as they don’t realize the immediate need of it. Philosophical aspect When an individual dies, three deaths occur, viz. that of 1. The individual himself /herself 2. A father /mother. 3. A bread winner of the family. The third death is the most disastrous
as it results in the stoppage of the income; the family is made to face a financial crisis. In such situation at least the effect of third death can be mitigated if the person is adequately insured. On the other side, the money collected in the form of the premium does not remain idle with insurer, but it invested in nation building activities. The UN Declaration of Human Rights 1948 provides that: “Everyone has a right to a standard of living adequate for health and well being of himself and his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services and the right to security in the event on unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood or other lack livelihood in circumstances beyond his control” Life Insurance provides for alternative arrangement in the event of the unfortunate death of the Bread winner of a family. Thus the economic condition of the family is not affected and the life insurance business is complimentary to the state’s efforts in Social Management. Quantum of life insurance What should be the quantum of insurance depends on the human life value. Each and every human being has different status (living standard, financial capacity, service etc) in society. On basis of his status, the value of his life and value of life insurance to be taken are decided. This value of life is called “Human life value”. Human life value is the monetary worth of an earning person and is the capitalized value of his net future earning minus the cost current self- maintenance. Human life has economic value. The economic value of each individual varies and it depends on various factors;- education, health, earning capacity, character, training and ability to work etc. Thus, we see that in life financial planning is very important. But while planning for different instruments priority setting is the most crucial activity. If we invest improperly than we may not get the desired result. In our priority setting exercise the investment in life insurance should have the first place and then whatever saving is left should be diverted into different instruments. Life insurance is the only instrument which not only gives peace of mind but also reasonable return on investment. This peace of mind is the highest return on any investment. t is a pity that the Government of Nagaland has been compromised and paralysed beyond redemption. The picture of an indifferent Government that has lost its honourable sense of ethics and responsibility towards its citizens has become apparent and clear. Yet another Sumi life has succumbed to the unfortunate incident of 28th December 2013... the Mukalimi NSCN(IM) flush out episode. Nipulo Chishi was just another carefree youngster sucked into the vortex of a man-made disaster. The poor lad has been made to bite the dust for good. The Government seem to lack the basic understanding that it does not represent one Tribe or the other alone but ALL the Nagas Tribes of Nagaland as a primary responsibility. The 'Hon'ble' Chief Minister has however not been too honourable by choosing to opt for a determined silence which is as good as affirming that the Sumi Tribe is of no concern to him...by his action or inaction. Projecting a picture that the loss of Sumi lives is unworthy of being officially and forthrightly condoled, that too caused through an incompetent handling of the situation by the Government, is downright demeaning. The indifference of the Nagas seems to have lulled the
sensitivity of the Chief Minister of Nagaland in his inability to see the dishonour in his silence. On the other hand the Sumi Hoho and all the Sumi Minister and Parliamentary Secretaries do not also seem to feel that something is drastically out of place. May they be informed that beyond their individual powers and comforts there is an issue of honour of the community that needs to be protected and upheld. This is an appeal to the conscience of all the Nagas as a community in general and the Sumis in particular to take a view on this. This can happen and is happening to every community in Nagaland. Should we sit and do nothing when our daughters, sisters and mothers are molested right in front of our eyes with absolute disregard of our existence by the 'National goons'? Does this behaviour of the Government not display a latitude of disrespect and utter disregard for the Sumis as an inalienable entity within the State of Nagaland? Do the Sumis deserve this ignonimity from the Government that was allowed to purchase their vote to power? Today it is in the court of the Sumis. Tomorrow it can be in the court of another tribe. It is simply a matter of principle of fair governance towards all Tribes of Naga-

land on equal terms. Now let's truthfully analyse the sequence of events. The Sumi ladies were molested by the NSCN(IM) cadres. While not condemning the whole Organization for the commission of a few, the wrong done nevertheless is unambiguously clear as to who the guilty parties were. The NSCN (IM) dirtied its organization's hand, choosing to undermine the Sumi public outcry for justice by refusing to hand over the culprits to the Civil Administration. The Government of Nagaland, instead of taking cognizance of the crime, chose to mediate with the aggrieved citizens in coordination and cooperation of the defaulting party. As a concerned senior citizen I for one have a sincere concern that the Nagas have the right to self-determine. However the humiliating crime that was committed by the cadre against its own citizens can by no stretch of imagination be accounted for as a condonable act in which people's representative Government should refuse to take cognizance. This is downright unpardonable. There are certain realities that we are all expected to
live under. It is often vociferously expressed by our the Southern Nagas brothers of Manipur ridiculing the existence of the State of Nagaland as a puppet of the Government of India and consider NSCN(IM) as the true Naga Government. Until such time the Nagas achieve our goal to its finality the fact of the existence of the Government of Nagaland cannot be wished away and the law of the land must prevail. The philosophy of NSCN(IM) is in tune with the thinking process of the Southern brothers of Manipur that the existence of a Government of Nagaland cannot be acknowledged and therefore, no matter what magnitude of crime has been committed, handing over of the culprits to an enemy establishment is against their political ethos. It is for the Government of Nagaland to assess whether they are the ones who are administering a rogue establishment and that the NSCN(IM) is the true legitimate Government. Their action has amply stamped this status definition this time. Even if the perception of NSCN(IM) were to be given any credibility they still had the option to turn to
the Naga Customary Court to dispense justice as per the Naga customary Law without overtly acknowledging the State Government...or do they consider the Naga Customary Court as an alien infrastructure as well? The height of their arrogance in failing to consider any other options other than to dispense justice within their own organization is unacceptably unrealistic. It is unfortunate that the NSCN(IM) has failed to realise that the citizens of Nagaland are governed by the Government of Nagaland on a day to day basis. The tax being paid to the NPGs by the citizens of Nagaland can by no means be taken as an endorsement of the Factions to govern its citizens on a routine basis. It is no longer a voluntary act as it once used to be... the Nagas pay tax out of fear of those who proclaim to be fighting for our freedom. We fear our own... does that not tell us anything? We fear those who are supposed to be championing our cause. Being subjected to continuous extreme provocations and humiliations in the hand of the NPGs over the years, the Sumi citizens could tolerate it no longer
and was honour bound to carry out an action that the Government of Nagaland had every opportunity and authority to stem the negative tide by promptly apprehending the wrong doers in this case, but had not done so. The Sumis have absolutely no cause to feel guilty for seeking justice against the perpetrators. The critical flaw of decision making within the NSCN(IM) organization in this case is most regrettably unfortunate. The inability on the part of the State Government to shoulder its rightful responsibility is pathetic to put it mildly. Having defined the fault lines... the loss of Sumi lives, which could have been averted by a sensible application of mind and responsibility both by the Government of Nagaland and NSCN(IM) did not happen as a result of which events led to the loss of Sumi lives. Hence the accountability rests squarely on the shoulders of Government of Nagaland and the NSCN(IM) and not the Sumis. The Chief Minister is expected to read the situation positively in its right perspective and express his regrets and condole the unnecessary death that had culminated in its aftermath. The people of Nagaland
Saturday 1 February 2014 knows without doubt that the present DAN Government owes a great deal of gratitude to the NSCN(IM) for its political survival but that should not get in the way of upholding what is considered to be the right thing to do. It is obligatory for the Chief Minister to officially condole the death of the Sumi youths and consider ex-gratia grant to the bereaved families and those injured during this stupid mismanaged fiasco. When due consideration was rightly shown to the Karbi carnage victims' families by way of ex-gratia grant the least we expect is the same yardstick being applied for the Rengma brothers of Karbianglong who too lost their lives in a similar undeserved fashion and more so for the Sumis closer to home. Unless honourable amends are made, this issue has all the potential of raking up a Tribalistic sentiment where the honour of the Sumi Tribe is deliberately being ignored and trampled upon. The 'Hon'ble' Chief Minister is obligated to publicly answer to the people of Nagaland as to whether the Sumis are being counted as a recognized Tribe within the community of Tribes in Nagaland. This insufferable insult to the Sumi community will not just fade away. The possibility of a serious

consequences cannot be ruled out if this subject is not forthrightly and honourably addressed. The question being left behind for the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Nagaland is this: If the Sumi ladies, who were molested by the NSCN(IM) cadre, happened to be his daughter, sister or mother would he have remained inactive or maintained the same sublime silence that he has observed so far? Would he sit back devoid of honour and do nothing? Perhaps when he answers these questions truthfully, he would understand and realise how defiled the Sumis have felt about this incident. Compromising a legitimate Government to this level indiscretion and dishonour, on account of a shady understanding with another organization, is despicable. It is with utmost sincerity that this appeal is therefore being made to the Government of Nagaland: Do consider offering official condolence to the families who have lost their loved one and consider giving ex-gratia grant including the injured. They deserve it. It is never too late to do the honourable thing. This subject will be kept alive until this is done...the Government be rest assured! Khekiye K. Sema IAS (Rtd) Forest Colony, Kohima.

Time ripe to change British education system: Governor Transfer and posting of govt officers Tuensang, January 31 (DIPr): Governor of Nagaland, Dr. Ashwani Kumar today stated that time is ripe to change the British system of education, introduced in 1850 by Lord McCauley, which was intended only to impact literacy to suit clerk jobs. He said this while interacting with the students of Sao Chang Government College here. Dr. Ashwani told the students that his intention to visit the College was not to lecture, but hear them share and share his views and vision. As a result, the students poured out their anxieties over their future relating to funding of higher studies, Govt. support avenues, standards of education, reservation for women. To this, the governor stated that the apprehensions of the students for future should be met with
appropriate future institutions of three categories: Research in innovations for developments; Professional in disciplines of law, trades and technical; and Distance or open educations. The governor was strongly inclined towards orientation of higher education for professional courses after class ten or at the most class twelve. Mere degree levels will have no value and shall be equivalent to class twelve only, he expressed. He also opined that the choice of higher education ought to be determined by the decision of choice to stay in the State or go out of the State. The first choice should entail the decision to go for professional courses, whereas the second choice should impel further higher studies. The governor added that Nagaland only has land with rich

He cited the current case of Wazeho Cement Plant, where the government has invested Rs. 300 crores to upgrade its capacity, but has been nonoperational due to lack of professionals to take over the business. He challenged the students to meet the requirements to hold and run development projects instead of continually pointing fingers at the government. Let us be job providers, he said, and not lose morale, despite prevalence of mismanagements and corruptions in the social system. On the issue of reservation for women, the governor felt the decision should come from community opinion. He maintained that Naga women are con-
tributing and performing more responsibilities and they deserve to get their proper share and place in the society. Meanwhile, Minister CM Chang, in his keynote address, attributed that the present governor is a proyouth governor. Earlier, the programme was chaired by the principal of the College.
Guv visits House of Hope The governor also visited House of Hope, run by Eleutheros Christian Society (ECS), on January 31 with his entourage. House of Hope complex is at Longphang in Tuensang district, where ECS has a hospital and monitors and operates many social welfare schemes and projects for the villages around it. ECS gave a PowerPoint presentation on the various humanitarian, social and welfare activities. All
the projects were operated for the community and by the Self-Help Groups, with community participatory approach and contributions for shared benefits in economic uplifts. Governor was highly impressed with the activities and achievements of the Society. The House of Hope is the answer to the question of sustainable community based self-help development, he said. He compared the complex to a Ramakrishna Mission Complex in Sundarban, where a lone Sadhu runs a hostel complex for 700 girls. The Mission Complex is entirely managed by the single Sadhu for all government programmes and projects without the government officials being involved. The governor wished that all government department officers visit House of Hope to see and act.

J a lu K I e z a n g D I , January 31 (mexn): Minister of Planning and Coordination, T.R. Zeliang today called upon the village councils and tribal hohos to uphold Article 371 (A) of the constitution of India, especially with regard to transfer of land and its resource and practice of Naga customary laws, and support the resolutions passed by the state assembly on Oil and Natural gas. T.R. Zeliang was addressing the public at Jalukiezangdi during the inauguration of new Village Council Hall, according to a press release. He said the government of India has given maximum freedom to Nagas under 371 (A) “which is akin to sovereignty and therefore now it is up to
the Naga people to make use of this special provision for benefits of the Nagas.” “India also gave us freedom to practice our customary laws under Article 371 (A) which is effective in controlling crime and is also cost effective unlike other Indian laws,” T.R.Zeliang declared. “Therefore, as a custodian of customary laws village council should run the village as per Naga customary laws," he asserted. He also asserted the need to codify and make uniform Naga customary laws so that it will be more effective and appli-
cable throughout the state. Practice and preservation of customary laws will also protect unique history of the Nagas, he added. He further suggested that village councils should attempt to settle any dispute and control crime through customary laws, instead of spending huge amount of money on legal battles. T.R. Zeliang also called upon the village to make judicious use of the money and schemes provided by the government and have proper planning for the development of village.

Pete Seeger, We Shall OvercOme SOmeday How Can I Keep from Singing? The Man Who Brought At the age of 94, Pete Seeger has passed away. Sarah van Gelder interviewed him in 2007 on a life of music and the power of millions of small changes.

ete Seeger passed away on Jan. 28 at New YorkPresbyterian Hospital at the age of 94. His wife, Toshi Seeger, passed away last July. Pete was known around the world for his performance of the music of ordinary people, and for his passion for their concerns, especially labor struggles, the fight against war, civil rights, and cleaning up the Hudson River. In New York state's Hudson Valley, where he lived for most of his life, he was known for showing up unannounced at community events, banjo in hand. And, along with Toshi, he organized the annual Clearwater Sloop Festival, named for the famous sailboat he took up and down the Hudson River, reminding people to care for and protect their iconic river. Pete believed that change would come, not through big, grand pronouncements, but through the choices we each make. When I interviewed him in 2007, he said: “If there’s a world here in a hundred years, it’s going to be saved by tens of millions of little things.” American folk icon Pete Seeger (left) was idolised by Bruce Springsteen And when I asked him about what it had meant to him to be famous for so many years, he scolded me for even never enthusiastic about being somebody who was mostly young people, came. ete Seeger was a good man. There aren't many musicians you can say that about without seeming simplistic. Music is often progressed by flawed, volatile, glamorous egotists, and thank God for them. But Seeger carved out his place in history with a quieter, rarer set of qualities: nobility, generosity, humility and, when things got rough, breathtaking courage. Perhaps uniquely, he became one of the most important singers in America without ever being a star, because he believed in the song rather than the singer. Seeger was born into privilege but not convention. His father Charles, an Ivy League professor and composer, was a pacifist and founding member of the leftwing Composers' Collective, and he came to embrace the radical potential of folk music. Pete was an intense, idealistic Harvard dropout when, in 1940, the folklorist Alan Lomax introduced him to Woody Guthrie. Said Lomax: "You can date the renaissance of American folk song from that night." This impassioned trio brought folk music to the cities and the airwaves. Lomax was the song collector and facilitator, Guthrie the charismatic Dust Bowl poet, and Seeger the man who got America singing. He didn't have a remarkable voice but it was clear and strong and it never got in the way of the material, which was the point. A great believer in the power of communal singing, he saw himself as just a catalyst: a means to an end. He crafted songs – both his own compositions (If I Had a Hammer, Where Have All the Flowers Gone?) and existing ones that he adapted – so that anyone could sing them. Describing We Shall Overcome, which he adapted and popularised, he said: "It's the genius of simplicity. Any damn fool can get complicated." Even if he had wanted to be a star, America's politics were against him. His first group, the Almanac Singers, collapsed during the second world war when their previous role as entertainers at Communist meetings was exposed. Returning to America after serving in the Pacific, Seeger saw two cherished projects fail: his organisation People's Songs, an organisation to "get America singing", and the presidential campaign of the Progressive Party's Henry Wallace. He was hounded, sometimes violently, by the right. His new band, the Weavers, briefly became sensations, but the Red Scare ripped them apart in 1952. And there was worse to come. Summoned to appear before the House UnAmerican Activities Committee in 1955, Seeger refused to wriggle out of trouble by taking the Fifth and made himself an "unfriendly" witness. While awaiting trial for contempt of Congress, and likely imprisonment, he threw himself into the civil rights movement. It was Seeger who introduced Martin Luther King to We Shall Overcome and advised civil rights activist to form their own group, the Freedom Singers. "Songs have accompanied every liberation movement in history," he wrote. "These songs will reaffirm your faith in the future of mankind." Seeger was also the forefather of the folk revival. In 1962, the same week his legal troubles were finally over, Peter, Paul and Mary took Where Have All the Flowers Gone? into the Top 40. But the revival ran away from him, thanks to Bob Dylan. The oft-told anecdote about him trying to take an axe to the power cables during Dylan's electric set at Newport in 1965 isn't true (it was a figure of speech) but he was certainly let down that Dylan would rather be a mercurial rock star than the darling of the folk-loving left. In that respect, he ended up on the wrong side of history but, having worked tirelessly and risked jail in the service of an ideal, he was justified in feeling disappointed. He soon got over it. As a songwriter, Seeger was never mainstream again, not least because his protest songs were snubbed by broadcasters. With 60s anti-war songs such as Waist Deep in the Big Muddy and Bring Them Home, he was largely preaching to the choir. But he retained his power to popularise other people's songs. At a New York hootenanny in 1946, he was the first to make Guthrie's This Land Is Your Land feel like a new American classic and 23 years later he led half a million antiwar protesters in a chorus of John Lennon's Give Peace a Chance, which, he said, "united the crowd as no speech or song had been able to all afternoon". In 1974, he was the first to record Estadio Chile, the last song Victor Jara wrote before his murder by General Pinochet's thugs. Throughout his 94 years, Seeger's principles never wavered, his optimism never faltered. His biographers couldn't find anyone with a bad word to say about him. He lived with his wife Toshi for 70 years, until her death last summer. He apologised without reservation for his naivete about Stalin, although he still considered himself a communist. He remained a committed activist and supporter of numerous causes. He lent a hand to countless musicians in many countries. Even in old age, he kept singing, notably at President Obama's inauguration and Occupy Wall Street. His voice may have grown shaky but it carried with it the history of the American left since the New Deal. He would have considered it neglectfully selfish to retire.

Exercise To Age Well, Whatever Your Age Gretchen Reynolds
O
The New York Times
ffering hope and encouragement to the many adults who have somehow neglected to exercise for the past few decades, a new study suggests that becoming physically active in middle age, even if someone has been sedentary for years, substantially reduces the likelihood that he or she will become seriously ill or physically disabled in retirement. The new study joins a growing body of research examining successful aging, a topic of considerable scientific interest, as the populations of the United States and Europe grow older, and so do many scientists. When the term is used in research, successful aging means more than simply remaining alive, although that, obviously, is the baseline requirement. Successful aging involves minimal debility past the age of 65 or so, with little or no serious chronic disease diagnoses, depression, cognitive decline or physical infirmities that would prevent someone from living independently. Previous epidemiological studies have found that several, unsurprising factors contribute to successful aging. Not smoking is one, as is moderate alcohol consumption, and so, unfairly or not, is having money. People with greater economic resources tend to develop fewer health problems later in life than people who are not well-off. But being physically active during adulthood is particularly important. In one large-scale study published last fall that looked at more than 12,000 Australian men aged between 65 and 83, those who engaged in about 30 minutes of exercise five or so times per week were much healthier and less likely to be dead 11 years after the start of the study than those who were sedentary, even when the researchers adjusted for smoking habits, education, body mass index and other variables. Whether exercise habits need to have been established and maintained throughout adulthood, however, in order to affect aging has been less clear. If someone has slacked off on his or her exercise resolutions during young adulthood and early
middle-age, in other words, is it too late to start exercising and still have a meaningful impact on health and longevity in later life? To address that issue, researchers with the Physical Activity Research Group at University College London and other institutions turned recently to the large trove of data contained in the ongoing English Longitudinal Study of Aging, which has tracked the health habits of tens of thousands of British citizens for decades, checking in with participants multiple times and asking them how they currently eat, exercise, feel and generally live. For the study, appearing in the February issue of the British Journal of Sports Medicine, scientists isolated responses from 3,454 healthy, disease-free
British men and women aged between 55 and 73 who, upon joining the original study of aging, had provided clear details about their exercise habits, as well as their health, and who then had repeated that information after an additional eight years. The researchers stratified the chosen respondents into those who were physically active or not at the study’s start, using the extremely generous definition of one hour per week of moderate or vigorous activity to qualify someone as active. Formal exercise was not required. An hour per week of “gardening, cleaning the car, walking at a moderate pace, or danc-
ing” counted, said Mark Hamer, a researcher at University College London who led the study. The scientists then re-sorted the respondents after the eight-year follow-up, marking them as having remained active, become active, remained inactive or become inactive as they moved into and through middle-age. They also quantified each respondent’s health throughout those years, based on diagnosed diabetes, heart disease, dementia or other serious conditions. And the scientists directly contacted their respondents, asking each to complete objective tests of memory and thinking, and a few to wear an activity monitor for a week, to determine whether self-reported levels of physical activity matched actual levels of physical activity. (They did.) In the eight years between the study’s start and end, the data showed, those respondents who had been and remained physically active aged most successfully, with the lowest incidence of major chronic diseases, memory loss and physical disability. But those people who became active in middle-age after having been sedentary in prior years, about 9 percent of the total, aged almost as successfully. These late-in-life exercisers had about a seven-fold reduction in their risk of becoming ill or infirm after eight years compared with those who became or remained sedentary, even when the researchers took into account smoking, wealth and other factors. Those results reaffirm both other science and common sense. Anoteworthy 2009 study of more than 2,000 middle-aged men, for instance, found that those who started to exercise after the age of 50 were far less likely to die during the next 35 years than those who were and remained sedentary. “The reduction in mortality associated with increased physical activity was similar to that associated with smoking cessation,” the researchers concluded. But in this study, the volunteers did not merely live longer; they lived better than those who were not active, making the message inarguable for those of us in mid-life. “Build activity into your daily life,” Dr. Hamer said. Or, in concrete terms, if you don’t already, dance, wash your car and, if your talents allow (mine don’t), combine the two.
Organ donation needs more Bolivia child workers reject labour proposal awareness, beginning with doctors

here are an estimated 850,000 child workers in Bolivia, a country with a population of nearly 11 million. But in December, when the government tried to raise the age at which youngsters could be legally employed, many of them protested. Some were beaten by police when they marched on the government palace in the capital, La Paz. President Evo Morales, himself a former child worker, then invited representatives of the main children's organisation, the Union of Child and Adolescent Workers of Bolivia, or UNASTBO, to breakfast at the government palace. "It was really cool," said Jimmy Puro, a fourteen-year-old car mechanic, whose photo being violently manhandled by the police was on the front page of the Bolivian press the day after the demonstration. "He said he'd listen to what we had to say." What the children want is the right to work, but also the right to say no. And to work in safe conditions with adequate time off to attend school. "I want to go to university, no doubt about it," said fifteen-year old child minder, Valeria Niñahuanca. "To do that I must work, because without that money I’d never get there. It’s expensive." Minimum working age The Bolivian works ministry estimates that about 30,000 children have had to give up school to work. They're employed as shoe-shine boys, bus conductors, security guards and sugar-cane cutters. Children sell alcohol and cigarettes. It's a common sight on the busy, chaotic streets of La Paz to see children aged six and seven moving between the cars at traffic lights selling chewing gum and sweets. The government wants to bring Bolivian child labour law into line with international norms and raise minimum working age to 14. UNASTBO representatives met several times with the head of the Legislative Assembly, Gabriela Montaño, to discuss their demands and a new code to protect child workers. Opposition deputy, Elizabeth Reyes, said: "A child alone on the street, cleaning shoes or selling sweets, is easy prey to a whole host of violations, from the sexual to the economic. But Bolivia doesn’t have the resources or the institutions to control these actions, so we should simply not allow child labour." Rodrigo Medrano started work when he was eight. He's done a number of different jobs but now sells sweets and chewing gum on the street outside clubs and bars on weekend evenings. His right cheek was covered with medical padding. "A work accident," he told me, without elaborating. "There is discrimination, sometimes from the authorities. The police come and ask what I’m doing out at night, that I should be sleeping in my house and they’ll take all my money and say that I’m a criminal." Twelve-year-old Pedro Diaz says his dad taught him the trade. His small black wooden box is packed tight with his tools of the trade, his brushes and polish. His hands are black, so deeply engrained with polish that you can't imagine it ever being cleaned off. Bolivia is one of the poorest countries in Latin America. Thousands have moved from the barren mountains to pack the cities, most notably to the huge spread of El Alto. This is the indigenous stronghold of President Evo Morales, the country's first indigenous leader who came to power in 2006 promising a greater voice for the indigenous, rural poor and women. Now Bolivian children are speaking up too. No-one recognises better than they do the reality of their plight. "Thanks to their work, thanks to their efforts, even though they continue to both work and study – they’ve managed to escape from their poverty," said Valeria. Some of these children at least have found their voice and can be shockingly poignant in their understanding of their plight. Rodrigo said: "Human rights declarations say that every human being should have the right to dignified work. A ten or twelve year old child is also a human being. That makes you think."

alita, a widow with three young children, felt the world closing in on her when doctors told her she immediately needed a kidney transplant. Fortunately, she found a donor, and 10 years later is leading a healthy and happy life with her now grown-up children. Not everyone is as lucky as her because organ donation is still a taboo and an estimated 500,000 people die each year in India because of non-availability of organs. In a nation of 1.2 billion people, there are just 0.08 people per million population who can be called organ donors. "One of the foremost steps to be taken in order to encourage organ donation is to motivate doctors of every department. In most cases, where a patient dies of heart failure, for instance, the doctor doesn't know or doesn't think that organ donation could be an option. The Chennai model is a good example in this case because with a slight change in legalisation, there have been more donors and more heart transplants are taking place," Kewal Krishnan, a cardiac surgeon at Delhi's Max Hospital, told IANS. According to Krishnan, an accident victim or a victim of stroke can become a heart donor. An individual who may have died of a cardiac problem can become a donor of other organs like the liver or the kidney. "Seventy percent of those who have received a heart transplant can work up to 9-10 years and lead an active life. For most of them in fact, there is no limitation of activity; so it's really a new lease of life," Krishnan pointed out. Nephrologist Dinesh Khullar also felt the need to encourage cadaver organ donation, which means organ harvesting of a person who is brain dead. "In many developed countries, cadaveric donations constitute 90 percent of organ donors, but in India it's a different scenario. On an average, India has 150,000 to 200,000 new patients with severe kidney problems every year. They either need regular dialysis or a transplant. But only 6,000 of these new patients manage a kidney transplant - and we are not even talking about old cases. Of these 6,000 successful cases, only 300 are from cadaveric donations," he said. Understandably, organ donation and especially cadaveric donation is an emotional issue for families. But people working in the field -
NGO workers - say that for most families this gesture is comforting in some ways. "When you understand that even in your loss, your loved one can save five lives through organ donation and enhance the lives of as many as 30 people through tissue donation, it gives you some kind of solace. It is the only positive outcome of your loss," NGO worker Sumita Nath said. Doctors, however, stress the need for raising the awareness of their own community on the subject. "When a doctor realizes that a patient's chances of survival are less than a year, when it's a 50-50 percent situation despite maximal medical therapy, he should broach the subject with the patient and his or her family," Krishnan said on the sidelines of such an awareness programme organized by Max Hospital earlier this week where doctors, NGO workers and those who have donated or received organs took part. Referring again to the Tamil Nadu model, Krishnan said that in most hospitals, posters can be found outside the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) that if a person dies or is brain dead for two-three hours, the health ministry should be immediately informed. There is also an organ sharing network between hospitals, which was facilitated by an NGO, the MOHAN Foundation. "Instead of waiting for the government to take steps to update a national organ registry, I think hospitals, government or private, can also form a network in the northern region, like in Tamil Nadu. Through this, if a person is brain dead, an independent organ procurement team can approach the family and talk to them about organ donation. Even in case of a young accident victim, such an option can be discussed with the family and other lives can be saved," Krishnan suggested. Khullar also stressed the need to give organ donors some incentive - not monetary - but in ways of hailing them as heroes. "I remember the case of a liver transplant, where a young woman was the donor for her husband. Two years later, he needed a kidney transplant and she again donated. In a different case, a young IT professional did the same for his father, first a liver then a kidney transplant. Both these cases had an emotional quotient, which we only considered after taking the donors' health in view. But if there were enough donors, would such tough decisions have to be taken by such young people?" Khullar asked.

Tax in the name of Christ? Iuto Shohe Naga: Much had been said and done in Nagaland just recently but yet again the UG’s are issuing Demand slips in the heart of Dimapur. All in the name of NAGALIM OR (not FOR) CHRIST. Working under the aegis of Nationalism, is NSCN a resource of profit? Here is a demand receipt received from one of the groups as seen in the picture yesterday demanding a sum of Rs 60,000 yearly tax in a shopping complex in circular road Dimapur. Irrespective of the size of the shop every shutter is deemed to pay the said amount on or before 30/1/14. If this happens to be a foul play by some maniacs, the concerned authority should responsibly look into the matter.
Arrest all Asians if fermented Soyabean is a drug in India Awomi SumiMac: “I NEVER KNEW AXONE (FERMENTATED SOYA BEANS), NAGA TRADITIONAL FOOD WILL MAKE ME LOOSE MY DIGNITY AND PUT ME INTO SUCH A BIG MESS/TROUBLE”. With deep pain and anguish I am laying down this message at the NAGA BLOG, to all the intellectuals of Nagas and also to all my beloved Indians who will see this message. Specially to the Narcotic Control Bureau Bangalore. TRADITIONAL FOOD IS NOT DRUGS and CANNOT BE CALLED DRUG, NO MATTER ITS COLOR OR SMELL. AND PLEASE I AM NOT A DRUG PEDDLER NEITHER ANY OF MY FAMILY MEMBERS DO. My first cousin sister who (whom I always have been addressed as and will be my Sister) lives in US wanted some Local homemade food and so I inquired at the DTDC Kammanahalli Bangalore and parceled some AXONE (fermented soya beans) and chilly powder last week. But the NARCOTICS CONTROL BUREAU Bangalore suspected it to be some kind of drug, and the ironic part is they tested AXONE and found it positive for drug called HASHISH. And by the way I could not even pronounce the name “HASHISH” the first time when the officer in charge told me. On this faithful afternoon the 25th Jan 2014 (Saturday) my wife and I were shopping in and around Kammanahalli when we got a call from DTDC Office around 4:30pm to come within 5 to 10min to collect some money which they were supposed to give us. But instead found a team of NCB and immediately as we came there, the NCB team started interrogating us and they took us to our house and searched our home. They did not find anything from my home also they could not arrest me as I am not a drug peddler. However they told me that they have found positive Hashish in the parcel, and the report has already been sent and that I had to accompany them to their office at Yelahanka Bangalore for the formalities. The officer in charge (superintendent) told me this is the law and that I have to co-operate with them and so I have done what was told to me and signed the papers. Which I believe will be sent to the court. And the entire sample that they found and 3 different package of chilly powder and 2 different pack of fried AXONE has also been repacked, which will be send to the laboratory for the final test. The result will be notified within a month. Officer in charge also told if found +Ve they will arrest me if not I am free. This fermented soya bean was made from Zunheboto Nagaland North East India by a mother for her daughter. Unless her mother (it could be anyone’s mother for that matter) is insane/ psycho, she will not in anyways send a Drug to her daughter or son. I am also giving the detail (Ingredients) of the Fried Axone which is with the NCB Bangalore now. 1. Soya beans 2. Mastered Oil 3. Ginger 4. Chilly 5. Salt 6. Angothi. Zanthoxylum rhetsa also called the Indian pepper. But definitely not Drug. I am definitely not sure what machine or device they used to Test/Examine Axone. But there were no Drugs or Drug ingredients in the above. I am posting this for awareness as I am still waiting for the final report. I do not mean any controversial arguments on this post. Also please do not make a bigger issue by immature/ non-relevant comment.

SC stays Bhullar’s execution
New Delhi, JaNuary 31 (iaNS): The Supreme Court Friday stayed the execution of the death sentence of 1993 Delhi bomb blast convict Devender Pal Singh Bhullar and issued notice to the Centre on his petition seeking commuting of his death sentence to life imprisonment. The plea for commuting the death sentence to life imprisonment is on the grounds of inordinate delay by the president in deciding his mercy plea and the state of his mental health. The apex court bench of Chief Justice P. Sathasivam, Justice R.M. Lodha, Justice H.L. Dattu and Justice Sudhansu Jy-
oti Mukhopadhaya, while staying the execution of Bhullar’s death sentence, also issued notice to the Delhi government. The court asked Delhi-based Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences to examine Bhullar and submit a report on his state of mental health within a week. At the outset of the hearing, the judges inquired if they could hear the grounds raised by Bhullar for revisiting the verdict on his death sentence in a curative petition. The court said curative petition could only be made if there was a miscarriage of justice or direct or indirect bias in the verdict

sought to be re-looked. The court said that in this situation, a member of Bhullar’s family should file an independent petition. Bhullar was represented in the case by senior counsel K.T.S. Tulsi. Bhullar’s curative petition came for hearing Friday as Chief Justice Sathasivam, Justice Lodha, Justice Dattu and Justice Mukhopadhaya, after considering it in the chamber Jan 28, decided to hear it in the open court Jan 31. Chief Justice Sathasivam had Jan 24 directed the hearing of Bhullar’s plea Jan 28 after senior counsel Tulsi had told the court that the curative petition was pending since September 2013. Tulsi had also told the court that the April 12, 2013, order declining commutation of Bhullar’s death sentence to life imprisonment on the grounds that he was convicted under the terror law doesn’t hold in the light of a recent three-judge verdict. The bench of Chief Justice P. Sathasivam, Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Shiva Kirti Singh Jan 21, had ruled that delay in deciding the mercy petition by the president and mental illness of death row convict are grounds for commuting death sentence to life
New Delhi, JaNuary 31 (PTi): Family of late Justice J S Verma has refused to accept the Padma Bhushan award conferred on him by the government posthumously, saying accepting it would be against his principles as he never “hankered” for any such honour. In a letter to President Pranab Mukherjee, Verma’s wife Pushpa said, “The greatest honour to him remains how he is held in the hearts and minds of his fellow countrymen: as a true friend not just to women or the youth, but to those most in need of one...” “He never hankered or lobbied for any acclaim, reward or favour...we do not want to accept what we know justice Verma himself would not have accepted. “He always and strictly, put India first before any personal profit or gain. He will always be remembered as one of India’s most preeminent jurists and with a legacy of alleviating substantive injustice through the forging of globally acclaimed new legal tools,” the letter dated January 29 said. The family also indicated in the letter that they did not get any official communication about the award, claiming they only came to know about it through media reports. Shubra Verma, daughter of Justice Verma, said that early this month some officials from the home ministry had visited Verma’s hometown Satna and enquired about him. “Some officials from the home ministry visited my father’s hometown in Satna in Madhya Pradesh early this month and had enquired about him. When I sought to know the reason for the enquiry, he said father’s name has been nominated for Padma Vibhushan. Even someone from the home ministry visited our house here and had said the same thing,” Shubra said. Verma, who had headed the government committee to frame stricter laws and suggested legal reforms to deal with sexual assault cases in the wake of the December 16 Delhi gan-grape case, died in April 22 last year following multiple organ failure.
Vijay Bahuguna quits as Uttarakhand Chief Minister
DehraDuN, JaNuary 31 (iaNS): Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna resigned Friday. Central minister Harish Rawat is widely tipped to take charge of the hill state. While the writing was on the wall for Bahuguna for over a week, the chief minister was told to put in his papers Thursday night, a highly placed source told IANS. The source said the decision had the consent of both party president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi. The 66-year-old chief minister told the media that he was resigning as the party “high command” had asked him to do so. Bahuguna, party insiders said, had paid the price for the poor rehabilitation the state saw after the June 2013 flash floods and heavy rains in which thousands perished. A Congress legislature party meeting has been called Saturday in which a new leader will be elected. Bahuguna handed over his resignation to the governor and has been asked to continue until alternate arrangements are made. Rawat, who was the front-runner for the chief minister’s post after the 2012 assembly elections, is expected to succeed Bahuguna. He is known to have the backing of most Congress legislators in the state. State minister Indira Hridyesh is also said to be one of the contenders.

SEVERAL OF INDIA’S most popular car models, including the famously small Tata Nano, crumpled in independent crash tests in ways that would likely lead to fatality or serious injury, a global car safety watchdog said Friday. The results are an indictment of the auto industry in India, which lacks adequate safety standards, said David Ward, head of the London car-safety watchdog Global NCAP, which performed the crash tests. India has some of the deadliest roads in the world. Drivers should be “educated and protected by regulation, but that’s not happening in India,” said Ward. India’s growing middle class, anxious to buy new cars, has helped fuel a booming auto industry while demanding little in terms of safety. Last year India produced 3.2 million cars, nearly twice the 1.7 million manufactured in the 2008 fiscal year. For the bulk of those sold within India, air bags and rear passenger seat belts were optional, and none was required to be tested for its ability to withstand a collision. The lack of safety features, combined with reckless driving and shoddy roads, has helped give India a road death rate that is more than six times as high as that of the United States and nearly three times China’s rate, according
by its April 12, 2013, verdict while rejecting Bhullar’s plea for commuting his death sentence into life imprisonment had said: “If the enormity of the crime is such that a large number of innocent people are killed without rhyme or reason, the exercise of power by the President or the Governor, as the case may be, not to entertain the prayer for mercy in such cases cannot be characterized as arbitrary or unreasonable and the Court cannot exercise power of judicial review only on the ground of undue delay.” In the case of Bhullar it was repeatedly contended that not only was there delay in deciding his mercy petition but he was also mentally ill undergoing treatment in a mental hospital. It has also been said that the apex court verdict confirming his death sentence was a split verdict confirming his death sentence. Bhullar was given capital punishment for the 1993 blast at the Youth Congress office, a stone’s throw from Parliament House in Delhi, which left nine people dead. The attack was targeted against then Youth Congress leader M.S. Bitta. The court has directed the listing of Bhullar’s curative plea Feb 19.

‘Will go to court and answer Kejriwal’ ‘Can’t rule out another CheNNai, JaNuary 31 Gadkari, among others. anybody. We meet friends and we Mumbai-like attack’ (ibNlive): Union Minister After meeting the DMK patri- also meet enemies. Anyone can
Farooq Abdullah on Friday said he will approach court and give “answer” to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for mentioning his name in his list of “corrupt” politicians. “I am happy that my name figured in the list. I will go to the court and answer. I will ask him (Kejriwal) also,” Abdullah told reporters after calling on DMK chief M Karunanidhi at his residence in Chennai. Drawing up a list of “corrupt” politicians, Kejriwal said at the National Council meeting in Delhi, attended by AAP workers, that the party will field candidates against them. The list included Rahul Gandhi, several UPA ministers, SP supremo Mulayam Singh, BSP chief Mayawati, Union Ministers P Chidambaram and Sushilkumar Shinde and former BJP president Nitin
arch for over 10 minutes, Abdullah said he was like Karunanidhi’s son. To a query whether the UPA was crumbling, he said, “Nobody is crumbling. There may be problems here and there. But the UPA will definitely emerge.” “I am like his son and so didn’t discuss politics,” he said, when queried whether any discussion on politics took place during his meeting. Asked about reports of meeting of NCP leader Sharad Pawar with BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, he said, “Anybody c a n meet

New Delhi, JaNuary 31 (iaNS): Coast Guard chief A.G. Thapliyal Friday asserted that coastal security has improved significantly since the 2008 Mumbai terror attack but did not rule out the possibility of another attack from the sea route. “Fair amount of work has been done (after Mumbai terror attack)... the efforts are ongoing but one cannot rule out the possibility (of terror attack)... as terrorist try out-of-the-box ways,” said Vice Admiral Thapliyal, director general Coast Guard. He was addressing a press conference on the eve of the 37th anniversary of Indian Coast Guard Feb 1. Thapliyal said the government has already spent over Rs.600 crore for setting up the coastal security network and has earmarked another Rs.650 crore for the programme. Responding to a question on the threat of another 26/11-type attack, he said terrorists had used a ‘dinghy’ - a small boat - to reach Mumbai shores and the Coast Guard are working to develop a technique to detect boats less than 20 metres in size. The Mumbai terror attack by 10 Pakistani terrorists in November 2008 left 166 people dead and around 300 injured. “Small boats are a cause for concern and we need to attend to that,” Thapliyal said, adding that fishermen communities are being involved to keep track of any unidentified small boats.
India, US talking to remove kinks after Khobragade episode
waShiNgToN, JaNuary 31 (iaNS): Conversations are underway to repair the avoidable damage done by the Khobragade episode to the IndiaUS relationship, which both sides consider “indispensable”, according to India’s new ambassador S. Jaishankar. “For those of us who have devoted time and energy to building Indo-US ties, the last few weeks have been truly distressing,” he told a Washington audience Wednesday, alluding to the worst diplomatic spat between the two countries over the Dec 12 arrest of an Indian diplomat. “What I have encountered since my arrival is the sense that this situation should never have happened,” said Jaishankar in his first public comments on US-India relations

imprisonment. The court by its Jan 21 verdict had held that insanity/ mental illness/schizophrenia could be the grounds for seeking commutation of death sentence to life imprisonment. The three-judge bench had also said that while commuting the death sentence to life imprisonment on grounds of inordinate delay in deciding the mercy petition by the president, the court’s decision would not be coloured by the consideration whether the person on death row was convicted under the provision of Indian Penal Code or the terror law TADA. The court, while upsetting the earlier judgment of April 12, 2013, in respect of Bhullar, had said: “We are of the view that unexplained delay is one of the grounds for commutation of sentence of death into life imprisonment and the said supervening circumstance is applicable to all types of cases including the offences under TADA. The only aspect the courts have to satisfy is that the delay must be unreasonable and unexplained or inordinate at the hands of the executive.” The apex court bench of Justice G.S. to the World Health Organization’s 2013 road safety report on the number of deaths compared with the size of a country’s car fleet. Seen another way, one in 10 people killed in a road accident worldwide is Indian. Four of five small cars popular on the Indian market last year — including the Tata Nano, the best-selling Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 and the Hyundai i10 — failed independent crash tests recently performed by Global NCAP. The findings were not unlike what safety assessors found in Brazil and Mexico last year. Automakers said the issue of car safety is complex, involving not just passenger safety, but also the safety of those outside the car. They said that means cars need to handle well, with good steering and brake systems while drivers must be educated about the rules of the road, and roads should be in good condition. These are all challenges in India, where roads are often unpaved and pockmarked by ditches. City streets frequently crumble under heavy traffic, monsoon rains and hot sun. In the Indian tests, only the Volkswagon Polo’s 2014 model had air bags, which were added after the earlier model failed the crash test. Volkswagon said the air bags, as well as anti-lock brakes, would become standard from Feb. 1 along with a 2.7 percent price increase to offset the costs.
at the Carnegie Endowment, a leading US think tank. “But since it did, we will now have to work through this problem. That is part of the conversations underway,” he said. “But what the issue does highlight is the need for greater sensitivity, for better understanding and for stronger oversight of our ties,” said Jaishankar. Asserting that “the grand strategy underwriting our ties is fundamentally sound”, the new envoy said: “It needs maintenance and from time to time, an upgrade. That puts the emphasis on detailing and problem solving.” “Building ties requires a degree of give and take that can test officialdoms,” he said. “Appreciating each other’s interests can be more difficult than we generally assume.”
Jaishankar suggested that the “US has to overcome its inclination to view ties through the lens of alliance practices”, while “Indians perhaps have to indulge themselves less in compulsive ambiguity”. “Ironically, American complaints on that score usually come when it too is considering hedging,” he said, reminding his audience that “contrary to what many seem to believe here, domestic politics is not just the prerogative of the United States”. However, despite their differences, Jaishankar, echoing President Barack Obama, described the US as “the indispensable partner” to realise India’s key priorities. “To realise India’s four key priorities -- energising the economy, raising our technology and management capabil-
ities, securing the homeland, and ensuring a favourable balance of power -- the United States is the indispensable partner,” he said. Secondly, “these big Indian goals are not at odds with the interests of the US. In fact, these could even be complementary”, the envoy said. Noting that “economy is now so central to our ties”, Jaishankar said, “I would also like to make it very clear that India’s interests warrant supporting an early American recovery.” Not enough credit has been given to the investments that Indian companies have made in the US since 2008, he said pointing to a recent study of 68 Indian companies which revealed that their collective investments in the US exceed $17 billion.
“A fair dialogue should also take into account Indian priorities and concerns,” he said. “A worrying sign is the tendency by some to demonise the business climate in India. This tactic could well end up being counterproductive,” Jaishankar warned. Asserting that “reviving growth through increasing investment is our foremost priority”, the envoy said: “India is concerned about its reputation, and we mean to act to show that we are open to international business.” While the two sides “could continue a public argument on trade and investment issues”, Jaishankar said: “on some issues, we need to find an acceptable compromise because the fact is that we are coming at it from different places.”
‘India to become int’l benchmark for CSR activities’
ChaNDigarh, JaNuary 31 (iaNS): With a new law making it obligatory for India Inc to conduct Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities, this could soon become a benchmark for others to emulate, a top functionary says. Beginning April 1, a new law under the Companies Act will require entities with a net profit of Rs.5 crore ($800,000) or net worth of Rs.500 crore or an annual turnover of Rs.1,000 crore or more to spend two percent of their profits on real-time CSR activities. Parliament passed the law last month. “This is the first legislation of its kind in the world. India is a pioneer in this field. What we do and achieve will be watched very closely by other countries. India will become a benchmark in this,” Bhaskar Chatterjee, director general and CEO of the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA), told IANS here. “So far, CSR has many models like the European and American ones. Our CSR model is very Indian,” Chatterjee, who retired in 2012

sures for employees. “Companies will have to carry out real CSR work on the ground. They will have to report their spending and activities to the ministry of corporate affairs. What each one of them has done will be put up on the ministry’s website and
weeks. The IICA, which is under the corporate affairs ministry, will monitor the implementation of the new law. In the first financial year (2014-15) itself, over Rs 20,000 crore will be spent by companies on CSR activities. These companies account for just 1.6 percent of India’s total companies. Merely writing cheques for religious or social organizations or events will not constitute CSR activities, nor will welfare mea-

sionals or outsourcing this to NGOs. “The intent is not to transfer government responsibility to the corporate sector. Rather, it is to supplement and complement what the government is doing. The government sometimes has many constraints in spending money. The private sector has far more freedom and leeway in doing that. The corporates can bring greater efficiency and innovation and also ensure that the money spent reaches the target. This will help in socio-economic development, especially for the poor, marginalised and deprived sections,” Chatterjee said. Corporates who fail to comply with the new rules and also do not explain why they failed to implement their CSR obligations will face punitive action - which could be a penalty of Rs.25 lakh and even imprisonment. “The IICA will maintain the single biggest database of CSR activities of companies. This will include where and how they are spending their money,” Chatterjee said.

‘Syria must comply with chemical arms deal’ BEIRUT, JanUaRy 31 (aP): The United States accused the Syrian government Thursday of using stalling tactics to delay efforts to remove and destroy chemical agents, an indication that the international community’s patience is wearing thin over the slow pace of the operation. The comments, delivered by the U.S. representative to the international chemical weapons watchdog, marked some of the strongest public criticism of Syria’s commitment to relinquish its chemical stockpile. Syria agreed to surrender its arsenal after a deadly chemical attack in August on a rebel-held suburb of Damascus raised the threat of punitive U.S. missile strikes. President Barack Obama has touted the agreement as a victory and a major policy achievement for his administration on Syria’s intractable civil war. The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is leading the mission to eliminate Syria’s 1,300-metric ton stockpile by a June 30 deadline. Under the OPCW’s tight timeline, the most toxic chemicals in Syria’s arsenal were to have been removed from the country by Dec. 31, but that deadline was missed due to poor security amid Syria’s raging civil war as well as other factors. So far, just two small consignments of chemicals have been shipped out. “The effort to remove chemical agent and key precursor chemicals from Syria has seriously languished and stalled,” Robert Mikulak told the OP-

CW’s 41-nation executive council in a closed-door meeting. His remarks were later posted on the State Department’s website. Mikulak, who is the U.S. representative to the OPCW, acknowledged that the timeline for the removal of Syria’s most dangerous chemicals was ambitious, but he expressed frustration that a month after the deadline “only 4 percent” of the chemicals has been removed “and the Syrian government will not commit to a specific schedule for removal.” He called on Damascus to comply with the U.N. resolution for
Syria to relinquish its chemical stockpile. According to the OPCW timeline, all but 100 tons of chemicals are to be removed by Feb. 5 — a deadline that surely will not be met. Mikulak said Damascus has cited security concerns for the delay in transporting the chemicals to the port city of Latakia for destruction abroad. But he dismissed Syria’s insistence on receiving additional security equipment, such as armored jackets for shipping containers and high-tech electronics, to secure the convoys,
saying the demands were “without merit.” “Syria’s requests for equipment and open-ended delaying of the removal operation could ultimately jeopardize the carefully timed and coordinated multi-state removal and destruction effort,” he added. “For our part, the international community is ready to go.” An American ship, the MV Cape Ray, is on its way to the Mediterranean Sea to pick up the most toxic chemicals in Syria’s stockpile, including mustard gas and raw materials for making sarin nerve agent. The
Cape Ray is equipped with two machines that will render the chemicals them inert. Danish and Norwegian cargo ships are picking up the chemicals from Latakia and will transfer them to the Cape Ray in the Italian port of Gioia Tauro. “There should be no doubt that responsibility for the lack of progress and increasing costs rests solely with Syria,” Mikulak said. The Syrian government had no immediate comment. The mission to rid Syria of its chemical arsenal is one layer in the country’s exceedingly complex and bloody civil
war. The conflict, which began in March 2011 as largely peaceful protests before shifting into an armed insurgency, has killed more than 130,000 people, forced 2.3 million to seek refuge abroad and unleashed a devastating humanitarian crisis at home and across the region. On Thursday, the United Nations delivered hundreds of relief parcels to a besieged rebel-held Palestinian neighborhood in the Syrian capital that has suffered from crippling shortages of food and medicine for months. The Yarmouk camp, located on the southern edge of Damascus, is one of the hardest-hit of a number of opposition enclaves under tight blockades imposed by pro-government forces. Activists said Wednesday that at least 85 people had died in Yarmouk since mid-2013 as a result of starvation and illnesses exacerbated by hunger or lack of medical aid. Chris Gunness, a spokesman for the U.N.’s UNRWA agency that supports Palestinian refugees, said a convoy carrying 900 food parcels entered Yarmouk on Thursday morning. He added that despite “chaotic scenes,” by noon 720 parcels had been distributed. “We are encouraged by the delivery of this aid and the cooperation of the parties on the ground,” Gunness said, adding that 18,000 Palestinians, including women and children, were in need of assistance. Anwar Raja, a Palestinian official in Syria, said a number of elderly people also were to be evacuated from Yarmouk. In the nearby suburb of Da-
UNICEF reports progress on child rights Depression may fuel heart
UnITED naTIons, JanUaRy 31 (aP): The U.N. children’s agency applauded the tremendous progress since the Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted nearly 25 years ago on Thursday but said more than 300 million children are still made to work and over 6 million die from preventable causes. On the plus side, UNICEF said some 90 million children who would have died before their fifth birthday if child mortality rates stayed at their 1990 level are alive today. It credited progress in delivering immunizations, health care, water and sanitation. UNICEF also reported a 37 percent drop in youngsters with stunted growth since 1990 due to improved nutrition, and an increase in primary school enrollment, even in the world’s poorest countries where only
53 percent of children gained school admission in 1990 compared to 81 percent in 2011. On the minus side, UNICEF’s report on The State of the World’s Children 2014 said some 6.6 million children under the age of five died in 2012, mostly from preventable causes in violation of their fundamental right to survive. It said “a disproportionate number” were from areas in cities or the countryside that are cut off from services because of poverty and geography. UNICEF also said 15 percent of the world’s 2.2 billion children are at work, which “compromises their right to protection from economic exploitation and infringes on their right to learn and play,” and 11 percent of girls are married before the age of 15, “jeopardizing their rights to health, education and protection.”
The report, entitled “Every Child Counts,” stressed the importance of credible data so governments can intervene to reach the most vulnerable children and improve their lives. UNICEF said the latest data shows that improvements in economic development are uneven. In Niger, for example, all urban households but only 39 percent of rural households have access to safe drinking water while in Chad, for every 100 boys who enter secondary school only 44 girls do. The Convention on the Rights of the Child, signed in 1989, states that all children have a right to life and to survive and develop to their full potential, that their best interests must be a primary consideration in all decisions affecting them, and that they have a right to express their views and be taken seriously on matters affecting them.
disease risk later in life
WashInGTon, JanUaRy 31 (Ians): An early prevention and treatment of childhood depression can reduce adult cardiovascular disease, shows a study. Depressed children are likely to be obese, smoke and be inactive that can lead to heart disease as early as their teen years. Further, researchers observed higher rates of heart disease in the parents of adolescents that had been depressed as children. “We were quite surprised to find that the parents of the affected adolescents were reporting a history of heart attacks and other serious events,” said associate professor of psychology Jonathan Rottenberg at University of South Florida in the US. Rottenberg and his team compared heart disease risk factors - such as smoking, obesity, physical activity level and parental history - across three categories of adolescents. The investigators surveyed over 200 children with a history of clinical depression, as well as about 200 of their siblings who have never suffered from depression. They also gathered information from more than 150 unrelated children of the same age and gender with no history of depression. Rottenberg plans to conduct additional research in order to understand why depression early in life may put people at increased risk for cardiovascular disease. Cardiologists have long known a link exists between depression and heart disease. Asia rings in Year of the Horse
BEIJInG, JanUaRy 31 (aFP): Fireworks illuminated the skies across Asia and millions of families gathered together Friday to usher in the Year of the Horse, kicking off a week of celebrations that included a performance by Braveheart actress Sophie Marceau on China’s annual televised gala. Residents from China’s small towns and villages to its sprawling megacities rang in the Lunar New Year, the country’s most important holiday, by indulging in feasts of dumplings and rice cakes and exchanging hongbao, red envelopes stuffed with “lucky money”. Many of them were among the hundreds of millions of people, including 245 million migrant workers, who had crammed planes, trains and buses to return to their hometowns in what is the world’s largest annual human migration. Chinese communities across Asia also came together to celebrate, marking the holiday with flowers and offerings. Hong Kong was due to hold a massive fireworks display over Victoria Harbour on Saturday, the second day of the New Year. The lunar calendar is based on the cycles of the moon and through Chinese folklore ascribes 12 animals, one for each year in the rotating cycle. The horse is in the seventh position. In China, the horse is traditionally associated with loyalty and energy, and is considered the secondmost popular animal sign of
the zodiac, after the dragon. The phrase for “at once” in Chinese literally means “on horseback”, and some popular New Year cards this year have featured money, houses or cars on horseback, expressing the sender’s wish of speedy good fortune for the receiver. This year, however, is set to be a dramatic one, according to Hong Kong feng-shui masters, as it is the Year of the Wood Horse - incorporating the dramatic element of fire. Conflicts, disasters, record high temperatures, an economic chill in Asia and more trouble for pop star Justin Bieber all lie in wait this year, celebrity feng-shui master Alion Yeo told AFP earlier this week. On Thursday, Beijing was a cacophany of light and sound as residents took to the streets to light firecrackers - traditionally believed to scare away evil spirits into the wee hours of Friday. But by morning, the capital was mostly quiet, as most of the migrant workers who comprise more than a third of its 20 million population had left the city to celebrate the new year in their ancestral homes. Beijing saw a slump in fireworks sales this year amid pollution concerns among residents and a move by city officials to cut the number of licensed firework retailers by 12 percent, the state-run China Daily reported. Levels of the small particulate pollution known as PM2.5 ranged from 140 to
160 micrograms per cubic metre from 6 pm to midnight Thursday - a figure that was still well above the World Health Organisation’s recommended level of 25 micrograms, but “much better” than the alltime peak of 1,000 recorded last Lunar New Year’s Eve, Beijing’s environmental watchdog said Friday. State broadcaster CCTV aired its annual five-hour gala, a tradition dating back to 1983 and featuring comedians, dancers and singers. The hugely popular programme last year drew 750 million viewers in China alone, according to the broadcaster. For 24 years it featured Peng Liyuan, the

raya, meanwhile, Syrian army helicopters dropped barrels packed with explosives and fuel, killing at least 11 people, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. In a new report released Thursday, Human Rights Watch accused the government of using controlled explosions and bulldozers to raze thousands of residential buildings, in some cases entire neighborhoods, in a campaign that appeared designed to punish civilians sympathetic to the opposition or to cause disproportionate harm to them. The demolitions took place between July 2012 and July 2013 in seven pro-opposition districts in and around the capital, Damascus, and the central city of Hama, according to a 38page report by Human Rights Watch. The New York-based group said the deliberate destruction violated international law, and called for an immediate end to the practice. The report includes satellite images of the neighborhoods before and after the demolitions, providing a window on the scale of the destruction. Buildings in the Hama neighborhood of Masha al-Arbaeen, a wedge-shaped district bordered by highways on three sides, are clearly visible in a photo dated Sept. 28, 2012. In a second photo from Oct. 13, the buildings have been pulverized into a white smudge, while the adjacent neighborhoods remain untouched. The government also has been accused of using airstrikes and rocket attacks indiscriminately against residential areas.

Suns inflict rare home defeat on Pacers Difficult to be friends
Phoenix Suns forward P.J. Tucker, right, drives against Indiana Pacers forward Paul George in the first half of an NBA basketball game in Indianapolis, Thursday, Jan. 30. (AP Photo)
INDIANAPOLIS, JANuAry 31 (reuterS): Goran Dragic and the Phoenix Suns don't mind skeptics who wait for the clock to strike midnight on a Cinderella season. After their latest win, it's getting more and more difficult to cast the Suns' stunning success as a mirage. Left off the All-Star team, Dragic, a dynamic point guard playing the best ball of his career, had 28 points and seven assists to lead the high-flying Suns to a 102-94 win over the Indiana Pacers on Thursday night. Having beaten league-leading Indiana twice in eight days, Phoenix's fairy tale is only gaining steam, perhaps finally convincing the NBA world that the Suns are for real.
"If I'm honest, I don't care," Dragic said. "I know what we can do. We are a family. Sooner or later people will recognize." Guard Gerald Green, who scored 16 points in front of jeering fans who rooted him on last season, said Phoenix wasn't looking for a statement road victory to change the conversation. "We're not out here looking for respect or demanding respect," Green said. Still, after sweeping a four-game road trip against the Eastern Conference and handing Indiana its second home loss, the Suns just might get it. "Feels good," said Dragic, whose swollen left elbow -- red and inflamed after the game -- did not. His dominance orchestrating an up-tempo

Olympic champion Thorpe checks into rehab
SyDNey, JANuAry 31 (AP): Australian media reports say five-time Olympic champion swimmer Ian Thorpe has checked into a rehabilitation facility in Sydney while battling depression and alcohol abuse. News Corporation says the 31-year-old Thorpe was admitted to hospital Wednesday after being injured in a fall. It quoted a friend of Thorpe's as saying "he had an accident at home, slipped and hurt himself. We're hoping he's going to be OK and make a full recovery." There was no immediate response from Thorpe's manager to an emailed request from The Associated Press for comment. Thorpe has been living in Switzerland for the past 18 months but returned to Sydney to spend the Christmas period with family. Australian reports say Thorpe, who has lived for the past 18 months in Switzerland, returned home to Sydney to spend the Christmas period with his family. He has reportedly been seen at several prominet social events including the Australian Open tennis. In his autobiography, Thorpe admitted his struggles with depression and alcohol. "Not even my family is aware that I've spent a lot of my life battling what I can only describe as crippling depression," he wrote.
attack provided Phoenix a 19-point lead early in the second quarter, and his teammates made clutch plays to hold off the Pacers' second-half charge. Indiana (35-10) missed 14 of 15 3-pointers and committed 15 turnovers as its 10-game home winning streak was snapped in surprising fashion. "They outplayed us," said center Roy Hibbert, who had 26 points and six rebounds. Guard Lance Stephenson led the Pacers with 14 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds, giving him an NBA-best four triple-doubles. Forward David West scored 18 points and point guard George Hill added 17 as Indiana placed all five starters in double figures. The Pacers made a 27-
11 run that began on West's layup with 10 1/2 minutes left in the third and ended when guard C.J. Watson scored on the first possession of the fourth quarter. The rally never drew them even, leaving Indiana with its third loss in five games. "Those guys battled," Suns coach Jeff Hornacek said. "That's when you have to have some guys with guts to make plays. That's what I'm proud of." While the Pacers' bench floundered, Phoenix received second-unit boosts from forwards and twin brothers Marcus (16 points) and Markieff Morris (15). The Suns shot 42.9 percent from the field but made 8-of-17 3s. Markieff Morris stroked a trey that gave Phoenix a 98-92 lead
with just under 3 minutes left. Phoenix blew out the Pacers at the US Airways Center 124-100 last week, scoring 62 points in each half. On Thursday, in a building where the home team had been nearly unbeatable, the Suns had 66 points by halftime, the most Indiana has allowed in any half all season. Guard Leandro Barbosa canned a buzzer-beating 3 to give Phoenix a 36-19 lead after the first quarter. The Suns took a 19-point lead on five separate possessions in the second quarter, the last when Marcus Morris' jumper made it 64-45 with 1:20 left. Phoenix settled for a 66-49 halftime edge. "Too much to overcome," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. The Pacers sliced their deficit to 77-74 entering the final frame, with the big difference coming when forward Paul George asked to cross-match onto Dragic after halftime. His defense limited Dragic to seven points and two assists in the second half. But Phoenix found other methods of production to hold on, closing the game on an 11-4 run after two free throws from Hill had made it 91-90 with 4:20 remaining. "Suns basketball is team-oriented," Green said. "We're not about stats. We're about making each other better. That's why we're successful." Few expected that. Rookie general manager Ryan McDonough turned over the roster, and Phoenix was viewed as a team destined for the lottery. In sixth-place in the Western Conference standings, the Suns are playing like a legitimate contender, even with star guard Eric Bledsoe sidelined since Jan. 2. "For a team that's trying to prove themselves, to come in and beat a great team on their court is big for us," Hornacek said.
with rivals: Saina Nehwal
HyDerABAD, JANuAry 31 (AgeNcIeS): Two swords cannot be placed in one sheath. And two opponents cannot become good friends. Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu may train under one roof and with one coach but it is hard to imagine that they can become good friends. It is true that Sindhu looked up to Saina as her inspiration and trains with her on the same courts. But both are top shuttlers in the world now and face each other in many international tournaments. Ever since Sindhu arrived on the big stage with some stunning victories against top-class opponents and landed bronze at the World Championships last year, badminton buffs waited with bated breath about her showdown with Saina. The opportunity came during the Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold final, the duo's first international meeting. Sindhu, who earlier lost twice to Saina in the Indian Badminton league, suffered a straight-game defeat. The rise of Sindhu and the fall of Saina in 2013 generated a lot of debate on who is the best. Saina answered all those questions with a thumping win in Lucknow earlier this week. However, one question remained: how good a friend is she with Sindhu? Saina minced no words and said it is difficult to be close friends with opponents. "It is difficult to be friends with opponents. It is true that we train together and talk to each other everyday. But we don't have time to become good friends," she said. "We don't even have time to talk to our parents. Moreover, she is a big player now and

an opponent to me. I am happy for her and wish that she does well. I know people are interested about our matches since both of us are Indians." Saina jumped two places to move to No. 7 in the world rankings. Sindhu, too, is back in the top 10 after a gap of 10 weeks. Saina, however, was not too enamoured by the rise in the rankings. "I have not seen them. I am not too concerned about the rankings as I always believe that if we win tournaments rankings will take care of themselves. I didn't feel bad when I slumped to No. 9. In fact, it motivated me to do well. I worked much hard-
er than I used to when I was in top five. I am quite happy after winning the title on Sunday," she said. After successfully ending her title drought, Saina eyes the prestigious All England championship (in March). Having reached the semifinals of the event earlier, Saina is confident that she can walk the distance this time. "I am in great shape now. I have enough time to get ready for the tournament. Warriors dominate inside to drub Clippers
OAKLAND, JANuAry 31 (AP): David Lee had 22 points and 11 rebounds, Andrew Bogut grabbed 17 boards and the Golden State Warriors whipped the Los Angeles Clippers 111-92 Thursday night. Stephen Curry scored 22 points and handed out seven assists, and Bogut added 14 points and three blocks to highlight Golden State's dominating performance down low. The Warriors outrebounded the Clippers 53 to 34 and outscored them 66 to 22 in the paint. Blake Griffin finished with 27 points, Darren Collison scored 22 and DeAndre Jordan grabbed 20 rebounds for Los Angeles, which had won four straight. The Clippers looked worn out after beating Washington on Wednesday night in Los Angeles, dropping to 10-4 since All-Star point guard Chris Paul has been sidelined with a separated right shoulder. The Warriors outscored the Clippers 2611 in the third quarter to go ahead by 23 points. Los Angeles went just 1 for 15
from the floor in the period. Golden State improved to 2-1 against the Clippers this season, with the home team winning each time. The Warriors (28-19) also moved within four games of the Clippers (33-16) and percentage points of Phoenix (28-18) in the Pacific Division. The Warriors had
lost six of nine entering the game after winning 10 in a row. Warriors coach Mark Jackson had called out his team for playing down to its competition too often after a lackluster loss to the Wizards on Tuesday night. Playing the Clippers was one matchup where Jackson didn't have to
worry about his team's focus. The series has grown increasingly testy the past two seasons as both franchises have transformed from perennial losers into Western Conference contenders. That included Golden State's win in Oakland on Christmas night, which featured two ejec-
tions, two flagrant fouls and three technical fouls. Emotions never escalated in the rematch. The Warriors took control before most of the announced sellout crowd 19,596 had even settled into their seats. Bogut beat Griffin for a baseline alley-oop in the opening minutes, and Har-
rison Barnes soared for two driving dunks during a run propelled by the second unit that put the Warriors ahead 48-29 with 8:25 remaining in the half. Los Angeles answered behind defense and dunks — most by Griffin — in its lone run of the game. The Clippers cut Golden State's lead to 6456 at the half, leaving most fans stunned and silent, but only for a moment. The Warriors showed incredible ball movement and rebounding prowess to begin the third quarter on a 16-2 run that had all kinds of highlights. None of the big plays during the spurt received more roars than Bogut's 20-foot jumper over Jordan with the shot clock about to expire. The Warriors' big man shrugged and smiled at Jordan while backpedaling to the other end, part of a run that also turned the game into a laugher. Golden State led 90-67 entering the fourth quarter and forced Clippers coach Doc Rivers to substitute his starters with 3:40 remaining and the game well out of reach.
J e r eZ , JA N uA ry 31 (AP): Formula One's sweeping rule changes may be behind defending champion Red Bull's dismal start to the preseason, but the more modest teams on the circuit don't see the makings of a major power shift. F1 decided to overhaul its rulebook after the 2013 season turned into Sebastian Vettel parading his Red Bull to his fourth consecutive title by winning the last nine races. However, team bosses and chief engineers told The Associated Press that the move to more expensive turbo engines, along with a plethora of other changes, will only reinforce the dominance of the frontrunners better equipped to absorb the increased costs and still spend on other areas of their vehicles. For
a series that oozes money like no other with its lavish motorhomes and so-called "grid girls," many of those who help run the teams which rarely, if ever, reach the podium expect the gap between the top and bottom to only get bigger. Williams' chief technical officer, Pat Symonds, said the best way to encourage parity was not through change, but rather by creating "stability," so that all teams can reach a sort of technological mean. "If you stir up the rules to make it economically more difficult, absolutely no, you are not going to make the racing closer," he said. Symonds spoke to the AP in Williams' hospitality tent pitched at the end of a row of the other teams' luxurious motorhomes at the Jerez track, where
preseason testing is being held until Friday. Symonds joined Williams this season from struggling Marussia to help in what he called a rebuilding of the team, whose ninth and last constructors title came in 1997, last grand prix victory was in 2012, and which earned just five points last year. "Changing to the 2014 power unit and then running the 2014 power unit is very significantly more expensive than it was prior," Symonds said. "Now that hits the smaller and the mid-sized teams much harder than it does the big teams." Force India deputy team principal Bob Fernley said his team and others agreed. "The disparity between the teams that are lower down the grid and the ones at the front is also connected to
how much you can spend on development," Fernley said. "We are all having to spend roughly 100 million euros to go racing; that's to build a car, to go to each of the 19 races. So whatever you've got above that is your development. So if you've got 10 million and Ferrari have got 100 million, there's always going to be a difference." Besides switching to a 1.6-litre V6 turbo engine from last year's 2.4-litre V8 engine, the rule changes focus on boosting cars' energy recovery systems, and alter their fuel limit, weight, and body. F1 also decided to award double points to the season's last race to keep the title race alive, and fans and TV audiences interested. Caterham team principal Cyril Abiteboul called the double points decision
an "artificial" fix to try to increase competition in appearance, while not in reality. Abiteboul said he supported the move to push innovation in F1 so that it could continue its mission of "preceding the automobile industry." But he said applying so many changes in one year instead of over two or three hurts smaller teams like Caterham, which didn't win a point in its first two seasons. For both Fernley and Abiteboul, the new regulations put more importance on the engine manufacturers: Renault (Red Bull's engine maker), Mercedes and Ferrari, who in addition to having their own factory teams, also sell engines to the other eight teams. For a smaller team "to win a race I think is a little bit extreme," Abiteboul said.

'I don't want to get stuck with something I'm not going to eat or wear.' But the habit has already had serious implications. Brittoni developed heart disease at the age of 12, something her doctor believes could have been caused by chemicals in the products she has been eating. The show charts Brittoni confessing her addiction to her family and fiance Josh. Once her family became aware of her problem, they urged her to seek medical attention. Arsenic, cadmium, lead and nickel are common ingredients in the cosmetics she has been eating and could kill her, Dr Jack Siebenaler warns her. Following several tests, he tells her that she is putting herself at risk of cancer and further heart problems. This, it seems, is the reality check she needs to try to quit.

BieBer tests positive for pot, meds
een pop star Justin Bieber, facing charges in the United States and Canada, had pot and anti-anxiety medication in his system when arrested in Florida last week but told police his mother "takes care" of his prescriptions, according to official reports released Thursday. Bieber was charged late on Wednesday with assaulting a limousine driver in Toronto and the Toronto Star newspaper reported Thursday that the driver in the alleged assault in December quit his job "in shock" following the incident. As his legal troubles mounted, camera crews and fans were camped outside a downtown Toronto hotel where they thought the 19-year-old Canadian was holed up. He made no appearances and his representatives declined to comment. The doe-eyed "Boyfriend" singer has had a turbulent year with scuffles with paparazzi in London and a felony investigation into whether he pelted a neighbor's house with eggs. The charges over the last week now put Bieber at risk of serving jail time. On Thursday, a report by the Miami-Dade Office of the State Attorney said Bieber had marijuana and pre-

scription medication for anxiety in his system when he was arrested in Miami Beach. The preliminary report did not detail the amount of marijuana and alprazolam, better known as the anti-anxiety medication Xanax, that
Bieber had in his system. Police have said he failed a field sobriety test after they had caught him allegedly drag racing on January 23. Bieber has pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence, resisting arrest without violence and driving on an expired license. If convicted, he could face up to six months in jail, although a maximum penalty is unlikely because it would be his first offense.
The singer, who is under the U.S. legal drinking age of 21, also had a minimal amount of alcohol in his system but had difficulty performing a breathalyzer test, police said in an affidavit. Bieber also said he did not know what kind of anxiety medication he'd taken as he did not know what he was prescribed. "Well, my mom takes care of all that stuff for me," Bieber told police, according to the affidavit. In the field sobriety test report, police said that Bieber had the odor of alcohol on his breath, bloodshot eyes and a flushed face. His attitude was profane, insulting and cocky. Bieber's highest blood-alcohol content during the four tests administered was 0.014, below the 0.02 legal limit for those under 21 in Florida. The limit for drivers 21 and over is 0.08. Police said Bieber "continuously forgot basic instructions," and they believed he was purposefully not taking the test correctly. He performed the breathalyzer exam correctly only after police told him he would lose his license if he "refused" the test, according to the affidavit. When told he "reeked" of marijuana, Bieber said: "Yeah, we were smoking all night at the studio."
age of 49 but the couple told Extra that it was something she would have wanted. 'She made me promise several times to look after Krissy,' Nick said. 'And, Mom, I will never ever, ever break that promise.' Bobbi agreed: 'She wanted this. This is something she wanted to see.' The two also knocked down rumours that Whitney's mother Cissy Houston disapproves of their marriage, which they announced on Twitter on January 9. Bobbi Kristina stated, 'She told both of us that she loved us very, very, very much, and Nick came up and he said "Grandma, I want to marry her. Is it okay? I need your blessing to do this, if I don’t have your blessing I won’t feel right," and she looked at him and she smiled. 'She smiled very wide and said, "Yes, son, you have my blessing.” ' Bobbi also revealed that her relationship with father Bobby Brown is on an even keel. She said, 'We have a relationship. It's a good one right now. 'At a point in time, we didn’t even have that… I love my father more than anything.'

Australia beat England by 8 wickets
MELBOURNE, JANUARY 31 (AP): Australia completed a clean sweep of victories over England in all formats when it won the second Twenty20 cricket international by 8 wickets on Friday to clinch the three-match series 2-0. After winning the Ashes test series 5-0 and the fivematch one-day international series 4-1, Australia added to England's summer of misery by following up its 13-run win in the first T20 with a comprehensive win which clinched the T20 series in two games. Captain George Bailey made 60 not out from 28 balls and Cameron White 57 in an unbroken 78-run partnership which guided Australia past England's paltry 1309 with 5.1 overs remaining. White was 41 not out, having set the hectic tempo of the Australian innings,
when he was joined by Bailey at 53-2. He was then outdone by his captain who completed a half century from 24 balls, with five fours and three sixes, while White took his score from 41 to 53. "Another great performance with the ball, I thought, that really set the game up," Bailey said. "I thought it was a pretty allround good performance with us tonight." Bailey said Australia's performances in all formats are being fueled by rising confidence. "It's a magical juice (confidence)," he said. "I think it makes such a big difference. "The greatest thing about that is we're seeing it from guys who are coming in for their first game. James Muirhead, I thought bowled absolutely beautifully in his second game. Patience required for lifting of Schumacher coma: Experts C M Y K
PARIS, JANUARY 31 (AFP): Emerging from an extended, drug-induced coma, like the one Michael Schumacher was placed in after a ski accident, could take several days or not happen at all, medical experts say. Doctors started Thursday to try and coax the Formula One legend out of an artificial deep sleep he has placed in after a nearfatal ski fall in December. After a progressive reduction of the sedative dose, it can take several more days for the last drug traces in a patient's system to disappear, according to Gerard Audibert, a neurosurgeon at the University Hospital in Nancy, eastern France. "There is a grey zone (between wake and sleep) that lasts several days, but it varies from one patient to
another," he said. But awakening is not guaranteed. "The patient may well stay in a coma," said Audibert. When it does happen, the awakening is always "visible", according to Parisian anaesthesiologist Bernard Vigue: "the patient opens his eyes or moves a bit". The purpose of an induced coma is to allow the brain to rest so as to lower the pressure inside the skull caused by bruising and bleeding in the brain. Once the pressure had been lowered and stabilised, doctors can start lifting an induced coma, said Audibert. Also factored into the decision is the patient's vital functions and ability to breathe independently -all artificial coma patients require a ventilator.
fully a really good team environment." England's defeat was made more bitter by the fact it won a toss which seemed influential and chose to bat first on a dry, firm pitch at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Regular wicket falls ensured its innings never gained momentum and Jos Buttler's 22 from 27 balls was the highest individual score in a feeble collective effort. Michael Lumb, Joe Root, Tim Bresnan and captain Stuart Broad, who was the not out batsman, all made 18 and Alex Hales 16 but no England batsman was able to take the decisive or dominating role the innings demanded. "We're disappointed with the way we played," Broad said. "Sometimes you have to give credit to your opposition. Australia outplayed us fantastically today.
WELLINGTON, JANUARY 31 (AP): Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson continued prolific summers with the bat while Matt Henry claimed four wickets on debut as New Zealand beat India by 87 runs to complete the one-day international series 4-0 winners on Friday. Taylor scored his second century in consecutive innings and Williamson his fifth half century of the series as New Zealand made 303-5 batting first. Henry then took 4-38 in an impressive debut as India was all out for 216 in 49.4 overs. The win continued seventh-ranked New Zealand's complete dominance of top-ranked India in the series, the third match of which was tied. New Zealand won the first two matches by 24 runs and 15 runs and the last two more emphatically, by seven wickets and 87 runs. New Zealand's emphatic performance in the series owed a great deal to its consistency with the bat, and that in turn owed much to Taylor and Williamson. Taylor followed his 112 not out in the fourth match on Tuesday with 102 on Friday, and also scored two half centuries in five innings, totalling 343 runs in the series at an average of 85.75. Williamson became only the second player, after Pakistan's Yasir Hameed, to score half centuries in every innings of a five match series. With scores of 71, 77, 65, 60 and 88, Williamson tallied 361 runs in the series, surpassing by 10 runs Nathan Astle's record aggregate for New Zealand in a five-match series. "It's been a great series all round," Taylor said. "The way we've batted and bowled has been very consistent. "I think the way Kane Williamson has gone about his business and set

India once again relied on Virat Kohli, restored to No. 3 in the order after opening in the fourth match, and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni to do the majority of its scoring. Dhoni had previously chosen to bowl on winning the toss for the fifth straight time. Kohli made 82 as India's top-scorer and Dhoni 47 but after its slow start, India fell hopelessly behind the needed run rate and its challenge was extinguished well before its innings ended. "Throughout the series,
I think the New Zealand team has played very good cricket," Dhoni said. "Their new-ball bowling has been fantastic but where they've really taken the game away from us is the middle-overs batting.
