AR apprehends NSCN cadres KOHIMA, NOveMber 23 (MexN): One NSCN (K) and two NSCN (IM) cadres were apprehended in Kohima by the personnel of Assam Rifles (AR) in the past 48 hours. According to a press release from the AR, based on “specific information” regarding movement of armed cadres of NSCN (K) in a vehicle in Kohima town on Thursday afternoon, a joint operation by 19 AR and Nagaland police was launched and various check points were established in the state capital. At around 2:30pm a white Maruti Zen, with registration number NL 05 2183, was spotted near PHQ and signaled to stop; instead of stopping the vehicle sped away towards Paramedical Colony, alleged the AR. The vehicle was chased and overpowered. The NSCN (K) cadre “in a bid to escape” allegedly damaged other civilian vehicles. On being cornered, the cadre ran towards the jungle but was chased and apprehended by the security force personnel. He has been identified by the AR as ‘sergeant major’ Verochiji, Naga Army No 15572 from Lozaphuhu village, Phek district. The cadre along with the vehicle was handed over to the police. In a second incident, based on “specific information” about the presence of armed cadres in Bara Basti area a search operation was launched by 19 AR in the wee hours of Friday. During this search two armed cadre allegedly of the NSCN (IM) namely Rect Arian from Ukhrul district and ‘captain’ Besii from Senapati district were apprehended; one AK 56 Rifle and one 9 mm pistol and live ammunition was “recovered” on them by the 19AR.
‘Need creative solutions to check social media misuse’
New DelHI, NOveMber 23 (IANS): There is a need to find creative solutions which do not unreasonably curb the freedom of expression social media tools provide and that check its misuse also, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said at a conference here Saturday. “We witnessed misuse of the social media and SMSes to fan violence during the recent disturbances in Muzaffarnagar (in Uttar Pradesh),” the prime minister said addressing the annual conference of top police officials. The prime minister said it is widely accepted that social media platforms facilitate exchange of knowledge, information and ideas and can be used for constructive purposes.

NE situation cause for concern: PM
New DelHI, NOveMber 23 (IANS): The security situation in the North Eastern states continues to remain complex, with insurgency, extortion and agitations being the main disruptive elements, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said here Saturday. “Persistent efforts on part of the government have resulted in considerable progress in the dialogue with insurgent and ethnic
separatist groups,” he said in his address at an annual conference of top police officials. “Further, the susceptibility of lower Assam areas and Karbi Anglong region of the state to ethnic and communal tensions, the growing mistrust between tribals and non-tribals in Bodo areas, the Garo insurgency in Meghalaya, the increasing targeting of non-Manipuris in Manipur are also areas of considerable con-
cern,” he said. The prime minister said these needed to be tackled with collective resolve and firm determination. Touching upon the Naxal problem, the prime minister lauded the successful conduct of polls in the naxal-affected areas of Chhattisgarh. He called for improving the quality of governance and the pace of development in those areas. The prime minister also stressed on the
need to sensitise the security forces deployed in any of the naxal-affected areas to the socio-cultural practices of the local people. “As I have said on a number of occasions, there should be nothing which affects the role of innocent citizens in leading their normal lives, and our attack on naxals and other such bad elements, should not in any way affect or disturb the livelihood patterns of local people,” he added.
DIMAPUr, NOveMber 23 (MexN): The National Socialist Council of Nagalim has reaffirmed its position on “principle based unification” and that the organization is also for “unification of all the Nagas wherever they are.” Responding to what it termed as the “unification group’s so called sixth anniversary programme,” a press note from its MIP stated that “unification” has been “misused and abused.” “Unification cannot be serious when it is formed under conspiracy by deserting with arms, vehicles, money and many important files and document of the National government under the cover of darkness in the name of unification,” the MIP noted, adding that for the Naga people, “such day ought to be observed as a black day and capitulation of the divisive forces.” The MIP note also termed it as a “disgrace and a big insult to the journey of common hope and reconciliation which we all are party under the banner of FNR.” It questioned the meaning of “unification” when “Nagas of Nagaland
state alone” were being advocated for. The organization has found ironic that “those who shout for one National Political group has failed to read between the lines and attended without having any second thought.” The MIP note stated that observing such a day means “justifying and giving legitimacy to illegitimate one and more divisive groups in one pretext or other.” The MIP note wonders what has happened to the “right conscience of the Nagas,” when celebrating “a day amounting to humiliating and insulting” of the “right judgment and sentiment” of the Naga people. “What is unification without any unification but more groups, more tax and more problems for the Nagas?” The note, while questioning GPRN/NSCN General Secretary Kitovi Zhimomi’s political stand, expressed hope that every Naga citizen and group “will now move along with clear conscience and concrete agenda.” The National Socialist Council of Nagalim stated that it “will not interrupt, rather encourage anybody or group who wants to
make the Indian state Nagaland better and prosperous.” “However, in the name of development, progress and peace in Nagaland state, one should not do so at the cost and suffering of all the Nagas who are not a part of Nagaland state and who have been patiently waiting and longing for integration of all the Naga ancestral land and people for more than 60 years under one political umbrella. We hope and trust that such moments of triumph and jubilation will come soon,” the MIP note stated. Meanwhile, it was stated that “certain level of understanding has arrived amongst the group at the reconciliation meeting and many difficulties have been discussed across the table yet time and again, blatant lies and divisive venom are spewed at the public forum to malign us.” This, according to the MIP note, “is one of the major roadblocks towards reconciliation and the Naga public must know this.” “Therefore, we appeal to the conscience of the Naga people as to exactly find out what lies behind the curtain of this unification group.” Full text on page 4
ciHsr, 6 years NH being ‘cleared’ of public health Morung Express News Dimapur | November 23
The Christian Institute for Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR) celebrated its 6th Foundation cum Thanksgiving Day at its campus here today. “13 years ago, in 2000, when I came here first, this campus was wilderness,” said Dr. Lionel Gnanaraj from Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, in his greetings from the Board of Directors. People from the North East used to come all the way to Vellore for medical treatment, he said, which should not be the case—a thought behind the establishment of the CIHSR. In 2002, the process to shortlist where such an institute would be set up in the North East began, and in 2007, CIHSR in Dimapur was established. “There have been tremendous changes every year since then, and hopefully CIHSR will continue to grow and cater to the people of Nagaland and its surrounding states,” concluded Dr. Gnanaraj. Indeed, the CIHSR, in the last year alone, has catered to the medical needs of as many people from Assam and Manipur as from Nagaland. It has provided medical services to more than 57,000 outpatients, admitted nearly 5000 patients, conducted approximately 900 surgeries and 2000 minor surgeries in the last year. These figures were provided by Dr. Abraham Joseph, Director of the Board, in his presentation of the Institutional Report where he noted the importance of service, training and research for an institute such as this. In Nagaland alone, services have been provided to far flung ar-
eas of Tuensang district, reaching out to 400 people. Lest the Institute become a mere structure, Dr. Joseph noted, it is essential to constantly train new people to make structures relevant. Many government facilities, he pointed out, especially in rural areas like Tuensang (where there are reportedly 77 CHCs), are available but are not being used due to the lack of professionals. The CIHSR has trained a large number of students through its College of Nursing and already runs a number of courses, including the GNM and BSc that has been recognized by the Indian Nursing Council. The Institute is also looking to introduce more post graduate courses for medical students, as well as a regional institute for paramedical sciences, informed Dr. Joseph. It is additionally awaiting a number of grants to come through to carry forward its research activities— past grants have been used in “meaningful ways,” he affirmed. “This is what happens when people put their faith in god,” said Rev. Dr. Tuisem A Shishak, Principal Emeritus of the Patkai Christian College, as Chief Guest at the Foundation Day. “It is important today to heal the body, mind and spirit—healing is about more than ointments,” he noted, adding that a relationship with god is most essential, followed by other human beings and with nature. He highlighted the importance of traditional medicine, as well as of prayer as part of holistic healing. The event saw the honouring of long standing employees of the CIHSR, thanksgiving songs and others presented by the CIHSR choir and its College of Nursing.

The story of a woman Naga Chief Vibi Yhokha Kohima | November 23
At 91, unlike her peers, S Hotoli Zhimomi can still walk without any difficulty and her memory remains sharp and alert. But what is charismatic about Hotoli is that at 91, she is still the Chief of her village, Sukhato, under Niuland block, Dimapur. Besides being a Chief, Hotoli was also the first woman evangelist of the Western Sumi Baptist Association. In 1977, February 18 (she still remembers dates clearly), Hotoli’s husband passed away. Their only son was only 12 years old then. And even though the husband had brothers, they refused to take the responsibility. Instead, they entrusted Hotoli with the job, believing that

Hotoli is survived by 11 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter. She is waiting for her grandson to finish his BA so that once his studies are over, she can retire and let him take over the chieftainship.

The Government Primary Schools Chuchuyimlang Platinum Jubilee (1938-2013) celebration was held for the four primary schools collectively – GPS Longzung, GPS Imlang, GPS Impang and GPS Mongta – in Chuchuyimlang - and the celebration was attended by a host of dignitaries from the education department, Chuchuyimlang Village Council members and others. The Chief Guest, Nuklutoshi Longkumer, while speaking on the occasion, maintained that jubilee is a time to celebrate the past achievements, retro-
spect on the past weaknesses or failures and to prepare for the future. Talking about the importance of primary schools, Nuklutoshi asserted that education at the primary level in a student’s life was the most crucial and important stage. He said that if a student is properly molded in the primary level, then that student, whether he becomes a businessman or a farmer would go on to be a successful person in the society. Besides, saying that there is no difference in the mental capacity of the children studying in the government schools with that of those studying in private schools, Nuklutoshi asserted that the main duty of a teacher is to teach the students and to mold them to become responsible citizens in the society. In this connection, he questioned the teachers whether they are teaching just for the sake of finishing the course or whether they are teaching to make the students to under their lessons. He encouraged the teachers to be dedicated

‘Guns of Manipur’ looM larGe over Mizo polls AIZAWL, November 23 (TNN): Elections in Manipur have always remained peaceful with the churches playing watchdog. However, clouds of unrest have been gathering in the horizon with the arrival of the “guns of Manipur”. The ruling Congress here has accused the Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) of using “gun power” to force the Paite tribals to cast their votes in favour of ZNP. The party has elaborated on how these “guns of Manipur” were infiltrating into Mizoram. Congress alleged that militants from the neighbouring state came in a Bolero SUV (bearing Manipur registration number) and intimidated voters in Paite tribe-dominated localities like Khuangphah, Selam, Vaikhawtlang, Ngaizawl, Murlen, Vapar and Ngur Vengsang in Champhai North constituency. ZNP, however, has denied the allegation, terming it “a baseless charge”. Interestingly, ZNP is a Congress ally in the Aizawl municipal council, but the two parties have decided to fight the assembly polls separately. Champhai North Congress candidate TT Zothansanga has already lodged a complaint with the district
Lalzirliana rapped for church ‘ploy’ AIZAWL, November 23 (AGeNCY): With candidates left with very little time to campaign for the elections to the 40-member Mizoram assembly, politicians are using various tactics to woo the voters. However, the latest one by home minister R Lalzirliana seemed to have stirred a hornet’s nest in the Christian-dominated state. The opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) has complained to the moderator of Mizoram Synod of the Presbyterian Church of India that Lalzirliana used the church to his political advantage. The complaint made in the name of Lalropuia Pachuau, general secretary of MNF, to reverend Lalramliana Pachuau said the local Presbyterian Church of the Armed Veng locality in Aizawl, where the home minister is a

‘WWII wreckage in Tripura doesn’t belong to US’
AGArTALA, November 23 (TNN): A team of US experts of World War (WW) II Recovery Mission, after testing all anthropogenic variables, confirmed on Thursday that the wreckage of a crashed plane found in the remote Birmonipara village of Dhalai district in Tripura does not belong to the US. In January, 2012, Assam Rifles men had discovered wreckage and a propeller suspected to be of an American aircraft, which had crashed in the dense forests of Dhalai during World War II. After being informed, the US WW II Recovery Mission visited the village in September and collected propeller remains from the sites, along with deep-soil samples and scraps of possible skeletal remains, believed to be of the American crew, which included eight army personnel. A senior government official said the experts conducted several tests in three different US laboratories and concluded that the wreckage and propeller found in the village were evidence that a non-US plane crashed there in 1953. “The experts are looking for details of a flight that crashed on May 17, 1946, with three crews and eight American military on board while carrying remains of 55 allied prisoners of war from Rangoon to Calcutta. However, the wreckages do not belong to any US craft,” the official added.

The MNF alleged that the testimonial, which listed different activities of Lalzirliana in the local church, was signed by elder F Lalroliana and elder Vanlalhruaia Colney, chairman and secretary of the church committee of the Presbyterian Church, Armed Veng North locality. The MNF leader, in the complaint, said they spoke to Elder Vanlalhruaia Colney on the night of November 19 who admitted that they made the testimonial with the consent of the local church committee, while the pastor of the Armed Veng pastoral did not acknowledge the existence of the testimonial. “There are a number of

Rejecting these charges, ZNP vice-president K Liantlinga said the party neither extorts vote by using gun power nor employs any armed activists from Manipur. “We abhor insurgency and we will never go against the guidelines laid down by Mizoram People’s Forum,” he added. The Mizoram People’s Forum (MPF) is a churchsponsored election watchdog that works to ensure free and fair polls in the state. The MPF, reacting on the controversy, said the model code of conduct seems to have been violated in various parts of the state. MPF appealed all political parties not to cooperate with militants. It also urged the state government to make better security arrangements during any election campaign. The church-sponsored forum also condemned the November 20 incident where a person in Khawlian village, under Chalfilh constituency, was shot at by some unidentified gunmen. ber of indigenous communities who are intrinsically linked to their land and its natural resources,” Haider, a former student leader, said. “The Chakmas after being displaced by the Kaptai Dam in Bangladesh, took shelter in Arunachal Pradesh. Where will our people go once they are displaced by the large dams planned in the state? We will fight the issue politically and take it to the peo-
ple in the up coming parliamentary polls,” he added. Demanding the Chakmas’ names that have been included in the electoral rolls should be deleted, PPA said that Arunachal Pradesh cannot be their home as they entered the state as refugees. “We are very much against inclusion of the names of Chakmas in electoral rolls because they are refugees in our state. There
are about 1,497 Chakmas whose names are included in electoral rolls in Arunachal Pradesh. Our party’s demand is that these names should be deleted as do they have any historical or cultural links with our people,” said Haider. PPA is one of the constituents of the recently-floated North-East Regional Political Front (NERPF) - a conglomeration of 10 regional parties of the region. The NERPF was
formed to bring the regional parties under one platform to work for the region’s territorial, cultural, political and economic interests. Haider said people of Arunachal Pradesh are fed up with the Congress rule because of rampant corruption. “Corruption under the Congress rule has made life miserable for common people. People are looking for an alternative. We are working to make PPA an alternative political party in our state,” he said.

You must create an economic corridor in the North East area,” Singh made the call to Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who delivered a keynote address at the second South Asian Diaspora Convention yesterday. “In Assam, if you build an eco-

He cited the models of India’s four economic corridors - Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Bangalore, Bangalore-Chennai and Amritsar-Kolkatta. Singh also highlighted the projected

candidates for the coming assembly polls who have made excellent contributions to church activities but no one, except Lalzirliana, advertised such activities and used them during electioneering,” the MNF said. It is the first time that a candidate of a political party has been using the church for furthering his political ambitions and campaigning, the complaint added. “We have information that it was Lalzirliana who asked the church leaders to make the testimonial,” the complaint said. It added that it was hard to believe that the other church leaders agreed to it as maintained by the secretary of the church committee. The MNF further alleged that the copies of the church testimonial of Lalzirliana were distrib-
to be enjoying the fresh tussle between the Congress and ZNP. It’s political affairs committee member F Aithanga also accused ZNP of seeking help from armed rebels from Manipur. Sources said the Hmar
uted at Seling village in the Tawi assembly constituency by the leaders of Mizoram People’s Forum (MPF), the church-sponsored election watchdog. This has become a serious allegation as the MPF was formed by the Presbyterian Church and some other churches and NGOs as an election watchdog and was supposed to be completely non-partisan and unbiased. Lalzirliana, who is also the Vice president of the ruling Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) and the seniormost cabinet minister next to chief minister Lal Thanhawla, had won from the Tawi assembly seat for three times. He faces a formidable challenge by Lalmalsawmi, the lone woman candidate of the main opposition party.
Mizoram sets example of violence free poll campaign
AIZAWL, November 23 (PTI): With no incident of violence being reported for the November 25 Assembly elections, Mizoram has set an example of peaceful election campaigning. “For the last several years, elections in Mizoram have always been more or less peaceful. This year during campaign not a single incident of violence has been reported,” state DGP Amulya Patnaik said here. Patnaik said one of the main reasons behind the violence free poll campaign is the strict watch kept by the powerful Presbyterian Church controlled Mizoram People’s Forum which has listed the dos and don’ts for political parties. “We don’t support any kind of violence. We have the MPF platform at state level, district level and at local level, which keeps a strict watch on any kind of wrong doings and any attempt to instigate violence,” MPF President Rev Lalramlian Pachuau, said. CEO Ashwini Kumar agreed that the campaign since the day the model code of conduct was implemented, has been peaceful. “There has been no incident of violence as such. But yes, we have reports that there have been complaints of bribing,” Kumar said. Three decades ago, the scenario in Mizoram, which had a history of insurgency since the early sixties, was not the same. The elections till the late eighties were marred by violence and bloodshed. “One of the main reasons behind violence free campaigning is the Church. Another reason is that we use the modes of campaigning set by the Church. So, there is no political clash,” Campaign head of Congress David M Thangliana said. MNF, one of the largest political forces in the state, however, claimed that it was the party which contributed to peace in the state. “We are the biggest political force in the state. We always keep away from violence. So, any attempt at instigating violence has always been nipped in the bud,” MNF leader F Aithanga said.

4 public discoursE NSCN (IM) Position On The Unification Group Dimapur
Sunday
E
ver wondered which group is not for unification? We are also for unification of all the Nagas wherever they are but it should be “principle based unification”. However, it has been misused and abused to the point where such a catch word has become cheap sweet name to take shelter and shed crocodile tears driven by evil intentions, hunger for power and positions. Unification cannot be serious when it is formed under conspiracy by deserting with arms, vehicles, money and many important files and document of the National government under the “cover of darkness” in the name of “unification”. For the Naga people, such day ought to be observed as a black day and capitulation of the divisive forces, a day which one should bow down our head in shame and a day which needs to be deleted from our memories. It is a disgrace and a big insult
to the “journey of common hope and reconciliation” which we all are party under the banner of FNR. What do you mean by unification when you have been advocating for Nagas of Nagaland state alone? Yet what an irony! Those who shout for one National Political group has failed to read between the lines and attended without having any second thought. Such a blatant contradiction is hard to digest. Observing such a day means justifying and giving legitimacy to illegitimate one and more divisive groups in one pretext or other. What has happened to the right conscience of the Nagas? What is unification without any unification but more groups, more tax and more problems for the Nagas? Doesn’t celebrating such a day amount to humiliating and insulting the “right judgement and sentiment” of the Naga people? Where is the wisdom of the Nagas in their search for reconcili-
ation and unity? NSCN hope that every Naga citizens and groups will now move along with clear conscience and concrete agenda. Another crucial chapter of their 6th unification anniversary was the public disclosure of Kitovi political dreams which is nothing but reaffirmation of the 16th point agreement which created Nagaland state to divide the Nagas and dampen the Naga national movement for self determination. It must be remembered that long before such declaration was made; Mr. Kitovi and group had already accepted defeat when they signed their Cease Fire agreement with the Government of India where they have agreed to respect the “land of the law”, which is nothing but acceptance of the constitution of India. Therefore, we are not surprised when he openly cleared his mind by faithfully toeing the political ideology of SC. Jamir the author of the
“Bedrock of Naga society” who cannot think beyond Nagaland state. The unreserved endorsement to the creation of NTC can be easily understood as birds of the same feathers flock together. NSCN will not interrupt rather encourage anybody or group who wants to make the Indian state Nagaland better and prosperous. However, in the name of development, progress and peace in Nagaland state, one should not do so at the cost and suffering of all the Nagas who are not a part of Nagaland state and who have been patiently waiting and longing for integration of all the Naga ancestral land and people for more than 60 years under one political umbrella. We hope and trust that such moments of triumph and jubilation will come soon. Mr. Kitovi in order to please those who are pursuing against unabated taxation has rightly spoken out using the same language of
ACAUT. Now it is time he answers those question as to where and how he has been using all his tax collection in the name of “unification” for six years and he ought to immediately stop collecting taxes in Nagaland if there is even an iota of truth and sincerity left in his heart. Let the people decide whether it is justified or not! Certain level of understanding has arrived amongst the group at the reconciliation meeting and many difficulties have been discussed across the table yet time and again, blatant lies and divisive venom are spewed at the public forum to malign us. This is one of the major roadblocks towards reconciliation and the Naga public must know this. Therefore, we appeal to the conscience of the Naga people as to exactly find out what lies behind the curtain of this unification group. Kuknalim.

“What You Sow You Shall Also Reap”
T
The Morung Express
24 November 2013
Dr. Tseibu Rutsa
here are basic rule of sowing vegetables seeds in the garden if we desire to have good produce to eat. We’ve got to plant what we want to harvest. The same basic rules that apply in the garden also apply in garden of the soil of our soul. As we consider this passage with an agricultural theme, I’d like to simply look at the things in order of the beginning, middle and the end. So in our garden and in our lives we begin with sowing the right seed...
I. First we must sow the seed. 7-8 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. We are sowing seeds every day. If we have put our trust in Jesus for salvation then we should be sowing the seeds that the Holy Spirit supplies. By doing good works we think we make ourselves acceptable to God to earn eternal life. In his letter to the Ephesians Paul
puts it this way, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do”. (Eph. 2:8-10)." It is clearly by grace that we are saved, but having been saved we have a purpose--those good works which God saved us to do. Those who have not put their trust in Christ sow different seed. Rather than that which pleases the spirit they plant seed to please the sinful nature, to gratify the desires that rage within them. Those who sow bad seed are not concern with what the outcome of their harvest is going to be because they’ve planned for worldly desire that has become more important for them than the eternal harvest through Jesus Christ. Hence, we’ve got to decide if we’re going to sow with our soul set upon the harvest of our flesh or sow through Christ for the harvest of eternal joy. In any manner when the seed is sowed we’ve got another job...
II. Next we must tend the plants 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. There are a few things that happen between planting and the harvest, such as manuering, watering, weeding, pruning, spraying of pesticides against diseases and bugs. Sometimes it takes longer time to harvest, and sometimes the effort becomes overwhelming. But Paul says to us, we will reap the harvest in due time if we don’t give up. III. Finally you WILL Harvest 8 the one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will he reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will he reap eternal life. Now we can talk about the harvest in two different time frames: First there is the temporal harvest, the harvest here on earth and now. Anyone who has lived in this world long enough knows that the law of reaping what has been sown has an application even here and now on this earth. We can all name exceptions to the policy and
times when it seems like the guilty live in abundance and no good deed goes unpunished, but far more abundant are the examples of those who have harvested even in this life exactly what they’ve sown: Those who have planted seeds of love and concern for their fellow men, have reaped a harvest of friends. Those who have planted seeds of hatred and bitterness and envy, have harvested enemies. Those who have planted seeds of faithfulness to the Lord have brought in bushels of blessings; those who have rejected the Lord commands have found emptiness, pain and have lives filled with shallow searching. So the law of sowing and reaping definitely has consequences in here and now. It is undeniable principle as we see in each generation. This laws applies to every person lives in this world whether believers or not. This cycle has been in around since human inception. It reminds us that no matter what is happening our GOD is the creator of this world and he is in control of every thing. Nothing is happening without his knowledge. The emphasis of our text

seems to be eternally oriented. And the words don’t require a lot of interpretation from me, the one who sows to the flesh reaps destruction, the one who sows to please the Spirit receives eternal life. And what is it that we sow to please the Spirit, first and foremost? The seed of putting our faith in Jesus Christ for our salvation, as we saw earlier that faith makes a change in our life that results in our doing good works, but the primary response that God is looking for in our lives is to trust in Him, in his plan of salvation through the shed blood of Jesus. This is the seed that results in a harvest of eternal life. Those who plant only the seeds which please their own desires will find the fruit of their harvest not so pleasing, their harvest will be destruction. But notice this point: everyone will harvest. Our deeds show our true color of faith in God and for our people that we serve for a moment. This Bible passage will bless or judge us one day. God has not change from this eternal principle. What seed have we been planting in our lives? Remember the seeds are growing every day for us to REAP THE HARVEST SOON.

‘Create platforms to encourage entrepreneurship, innovation’ New Delhi, November 23 (iANS): The central government needs to create platforms for entrepreneurs and innovation to flourish in the country, Nandan Nilekani, chairman, Unique Identification Authority of India, said Friday. He was speaking at a workshop on "Indo-US Startup Accelerator" organised by FICCI in partnership with the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum and Department of Science and Technology. Nilekani said the UID platform was created after looking at the two successful innovations that took place in the US, namely internet and GPS, and both became platforms for numerous entrepreneurs and startups. Citing the example of the Aadhaar card, he said platforms lead to expan-
sion. "Aadhaar cards have led to creation of an infrastructure of unique identity of people, digital authentication of a person, electronic KYC (Know Your Customer) and capability of creating a financial address," he said. The workshop signifies the joint commitment of all partners to create an enabling ecosystem for the young and dynamic startups from India to make the big leap. T. Ramasami, secretary, Department of Science and Technology, identified financial support, access to market, material and technology as the challenges that the entrepreneurs and startups face. "It is often seen that funds are easily available to already established entrepreneurs. However, startups find it difficult to
acquire seed funding," said Ramasami. He said the government and entrepreneurs should learn and gain from each other's experiences. "Startups have the advantage of being sensitive to the needs of the place and can be a part of the development process. They already enjoy economies of scope but need to expand economies of scale," he added. Nancy J. Powell, US Ambassador to India, said the startup ecosystem should allow for failures and not result in dire consequences such as drying up of funding sources. "Entrepreneurs are by nature risk takers and sometimes their ventures fail. Many successful entrepreneurs achieved success on third or fourth attempt to start a viable business," she said.
So much for a tendered heart Ningyangwungkhai Muinao
It was just yesterday my voice captivated thy attention. My apparatus enchant thy gaze and stare, My etiquette and attitude thou adore and craze for; Hum and sung my song like the sun would never shine again. Stay awake till dawn waiting for my retreat. Fancy my name and whisper among thy mate. Where has all that zeal and desperate flew? Where has all those sweet words disappeared? Where is that hand thou stretched out to comfort and mend? What thou have met today that made thee stiff and numb? What made thee so furious that hated thy one most precious? Is thy promises a snafu that blown away with time? If it's meant to be broken why made it so soft and tender? Is this thy love or a revenge for loving thee? Like a stranger thou walk by leaving me alone on the highway 28. Would that memoirs we share let thee miss me or haunt thee? What kind of soul let thee forget those half a decade in one single night? What magic potion change thy heart into stony soul? Love made me so naive that I forget to reason and prepare for this day. Must I move on for life must go on even without thee. I was true and was longing to hold on thy hand through every season. But my love thou only crave for a short smile, counting those days only. Where thou can find paradise in this villain realm? Someday when the tears find thy rosy cheeks; Remember this words that I said today and mend thy broken soul, We must as a human have to sail on through every weather.

The Night Before Christmas Monalisa Changkija
I
n exactly a month’s time, it would be the
night before Christmas. Now is as good a time as any to ask ourselves how we plan to spend the night before Christmas and indeed Christmas Day itself. If you have problems and doubts about what you would be doing a month from today, I suggest you pick up Zelhou Keyho’s book The Night Before Christmas (First Edition 2013, sponsored by the Samrajyam Welfare Society, the design and layout of which was done by Heritage Publishing House, 65 Duncan, near Essar Petrol Pump, Dimapur, Nagaland). This is not a book I would normally review, or even read, but when Reverend Keyho, a dear friend, who is the Academic Dean of the Oriental Theological Seminary (OTS), Bade, Dimapur, asked me to review it, I agreed. I really don’t know why but I’m glad I did because it reinforced my beliefs about what Christmas is all about and helped me re-focus on what it is meant to be. Times are such today it is easy to get distracted, diverted and digressed and The Night Before Christmas has come at just the right time to remind us that, as Believers, we need to revisit Baby Jesus laying in the manger at a Bethlehem stable, bringing a whole new meaning to the lives of human beings burdened with sin, sorrow and suffering. The Night Before Christmas could have been written and edited better but hey, don’t get sidetracked by the medium, focus on the message. I believe, unwittingly this book also underscores how we have allowed the medium to make us forget the message of Christmas. Zelhou Keyho, who teaches Old Testament and Biblical Languages at OTS, Bade, writes
that Christmas passes by in a blink of the eyes but it doesn’t have to be so, adding “With Christ, it can and should be all year round”. Clearly, this also means that as Believers, we need to be Christians 24X7 and not just on Sundays, Christmases and Easters. The book contains nine chapters, the last being Prayer Time For Family At Christmas, which I believe should help strengthen family bonds, so crucial for our individual and collectives lives. Keyho writes, “Christmas had a beginning. It started in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve wilfully decided to obey the serpent and disobey God”, in the chapter, Love That Came Down At Christmas. He explains why God had to manifest Himself in human form, thankfully in a very simple manner, not the churchy, sermony way. “What are you expecting this Christmas? Are you wishing that something different will happen? Are you entering into it differently than you have before? What is your wish?” Keyho asks in the chapter The Heart Of Christmas, which should help you deal with the answers, as he reminds us that “Christmas is also a time for renewal: renewal of friendship, of family relationship but most of all renewal of our relationship with God”. But seeing the way we have adapted to the “done things” like fish to water, we have even managed to totally change the meaning of the word “renewal” and transformed the superfluous into the lait motif of our lives. I agree with him entirely when he writes: “Personally, I feel Christmas back then was more meaningful”. In the chapter The Couple That Makes Christmas, Keyho writes about the “unfortunate couple” (Mary and Joseph) who could not find a room in the inn at Bethlehem but was used by God to unveil the wonders of Christmas
Naga Hoho to proceed general session in Wokha Our Correspondent Kohima | November 23
The Naga Hoho on Friday announced to go ahead with its 10th general session as scheduled in Wokha even as there had been reported opposition from some sections of the organizations. The session scheduled from November 25 to 26, will be held under the theme “Commitments & responsibilities.” Addressing a press conference here Friday at Hotel Japfu, organizing committee convenor and Naga Hoho vice president K. Inaka Assumi said the Hoho came to know about the internal difference between the Kyong Hoho and some of the Lotha frontal organizations only through the local newspapers. He also informed there was no official communication from the Kyong Hoho, which is affiliated to the Naga Hoho and therefore the Naga Hoho would be going ahead with the general session in Wokha. He also went on to express that the impasse between the Kyong Hoho and some of the organizations/ individuals is their (KH) internal problem and since KH is affiliated to Naga Hoho and they are willing to host the general session, “we (Naga Hoho) will go ahead with the scheduled programme.” Inaka said the threat given by the sections of Lotha people will not have any effect on the session while adding, “Let us not blow the issue out of proportion.” He said 22 units of Naga Hoho will attend the session. Organizing committee member Achumbemo Kikon said it was the Kyong Hoho that organized the recently celebrated premier festival of Lotha Nagas’ ‘Tokhu Emong’ in Wokha,
which was also joined by all the Lotha people without any disturbance. Stating “it is only few vested interest (Lotha) people in Kohima and Dimapur trying to mislead the Nagas,” Kikon said “the sabotage of those people will not work” as “Naga Hoho is a matured organization and will not bow down to such threat.” He also assured that the session will be held without any disturbances, adding the session will see massive participation from Nagas from all walks of life. Vipopal Kintso, organizing committee member expressed that since Kyong Hoho is the apex body of the Lotha Nagas, “we do not expect any untoward incident during the session.” Other organizing committee members present at the press conference included K. Elu Ndang and Mutsikhoyo Yhobu. Participation from South Nagas numbering 153 delegates have already been confirmed to the forthcoming session, the organizing committee said. Minimum of 20 official delegates from each federal unit under Naga Hoho have been invited to join the session. Introductory session will start at 5:00 PM on November 25 at LTC Hall, Wokha. The programme will be chaired by Neikhrolo Khalo. On day 2, the function will begin at 10:00 AM. Greetings by Naga Mother’s Association, presidential address by Keviletuo Kiewhuo, release of the amended constitution, general secretary report by P. Chuba Ozukum and deliberations and adoption of resolutions will mark the session. Further, the new executive council of the Naga Hoho will also be announced during the session.

and their joyful and complete submission to His will, while at the same time reminding us of the numerous indifferent religious leaders around King Herod, who knew exactly where the Messiah would be born but though full of religious knowledge they had no personal experience of a relationship with God and had no desire to worship the Messiah. In this chapter, Keyho allows us to get a glimpse of Mary and Joseph’s characters, nature and personalities --- very educative because we hardly ever think about these two major protagonists of the Christmas story. The chapter Modern Day Narrative of the Night Before Christmas is very absorbing. Keyho uses all his ingenuity and creative talents to bring to us Mary and Joseph as entirely human, just like us, concerned with the mundane of life. Thereby he also creates for us a picture of how society was in their days and how very little has changed today --- as Nagas we would be able to totally relate to the Jewish society because like them we too are focused on our pedigree, our clan, our village, our tribe, our professions, our social status, etc., as well as our bondage to varied forms of tyranny particularly manifesting in the form of corruption, absence of good governance, increasing racism, intolerance, struggle for dominance, turf wars, etc., which at the time of the first Christmas were personified by Kind Herod. Keyho writes, “He came so that we can become better than we thought we could be”, in the chapter The True Meaning of Christmas, further emphasizing that “in Jesus, the glory of God was restored to humanity”. He further emphasizes that Christmas “can be a time of healing and renewed strength” in the next chapter Christmas With A Brighter Perspective, because Jesus’ story is one of truth, love and hope. ter I liked most because the good Reverend highlights how we have contextualized and commercialized Christmas away from Baby Jesus laying in a manger in the humble stable at Bethlehem to some ritzy and glitzy place, where there is no place for the Son of God, the Saviour, the Messiah. Indeed, this chapter mirrors the debasement of Christmas across the globe, not least in Nagaland because here we are only too receptive and eager to do the “done things”. But as Keyho writes: “The meaning of the season is the corner stone of our faith, the touch stone of Christian history, which is theologically termed as soteriology (Salvation History). He also writes: “What God did at Christmas is the crowning reason of our Christmas celebration. He did not come to entertain us, to simply make us wonder at the event and to make us busy”. I agree with Keyho that Christmas is not the time for the hula-hoopla but for serious contemplation of God’s love for undeserving sinners like us, a time when we need to humbly re-visit the Son of God at the stable laying in a manger. It is the time to seek God’s grace to bless us with “the spirit of the fist Christmas”. There are several heart-warming stories in The Night Before Christmas reflecting “the spirit of the first Christmas”, which I suggest you read to help you re-connect with what Christmas is all about. And I am convinced that Prayer Time For Family At Christmas would have special message and meaning for your family. Christmas, after all, is also about the family, the human family and God’s Family. Keyho writes: “Jesus is the reason for the season” and his book would help you celebrate a Christmas with a difference. Dr. Hukashe A Zhimomi, who wrote the book’s Foreword, is right that Keyho has “brought out a holistic perspective of Christmas” in a simple language to
remind us of the Greatest Story Ever Told. The book, based on Keyho’s unique experiences and personal collection of stories and articles written over the years, contains 106 pages and is priced at Rs. 130/. Do get a copy from the Samrajyam Welfare Society (mobile: 8731988460, 9615851944) or contact at swsvja7@gmail.com. The Night Before Christmas, would make a very meaningful Christmas gift.

sponse from his colleagues and senior government officers that majority of the Pochury officers and employees are “sincere, hard working and trustworthy.” He said that “unless we earn the trust of the people and our colleagues, be it senior officers or junior employers or our own status level, it is difficult to function and bring good name to the individual or community.” He encouraged the PGOs to encourage one another so they uphold their name and status and thereby bring the tribe to the forefront in the family of Nagas. “Today, Naga people need upright, sincere and hardworking and judicious officers in their function,” he said, adding Nagas need oneness, brotherhood and unity.
He stated division is not going to help us, be it national workers, underground organizations, church organizations, civil societies.”By having more and more organization we are not going to solve the problem that we are confronted.” Asserting that forming an organization to address the issue is not a solution, he said, it only generates more and more problem and division in the society. In this, he said every individual has to understand and has to work towards Naga oneness, unity and brotherhood. Stating that officers are the cream of the society, he reminded them if they give a wrong direction there are many ways things can go
wrong. “If you give the right decision there will be lot of improvement and corrective measures down at the village and grassroots level.” He also called upon the officers to keep “our” Naga family united and strong, adding “we can be united and strong when we develop the feeling of oneness and when we can only develop the trust on one another.” PGOF president Zhitho Nyuthe said the Forum which started with just 22 members, has now grown to more than 100 gazetted officers. Amongst the 70 odd departments in the state, Pochury gazetted officers are spread out in only 27 departments. “We still have a lot of challenges ahead of us,” he said. 50 yrs of statehood & the forgotten heroes of Nagaland statehood
B
lessed be the name of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Come 1st December and Nagaland will be celebrating its 50th year of statehood. Although Nagaland Sate is in a pathetic state, nevertheless it calls for a celebration. We all know that there are many things to talk about our State. Many excellent writings on topics like terrible roads, corruption, taxation etc have been published in our daily local papers. All these topics are no doubt serious matters. However while we are wrestling with these problems in Nagaland are we are forgetting something very important a “Historic Event” in the History of Nagaland? I would like to take the privilege to talk about the almost forgotten or actually forgotten heroes of Nagaland state also know as ex. Interim Body Members (ex IBM) 1961-1963. The brave and humble souls, the heroes of Nagaland who gave their sweat blood and tears for the foundation of Nagaland State. Ok now you remember. It may be shocking news for the people of Nagaland but some of the Interim body members of 1961 are still alive and kicking today. They are the “living fossils” of Nagaland. Sadly, many have passed away. I had the rarest of rare privilege to meet few of the living Interim body members of 1961-1963. I also had a wonderful opportunity to listen to their testimonies of hard and testing time they and their friends (other IBM’s) went through in order to bring the Statehood into existence. I thank God for the opportunity. I would like to share what they shared with me about what they went through to bring Statehood for Nagas. I believe it will be a precious insight for all the Nagas specially the younger generation to know a little about the Interim body members. I hope it will raise love, respect and concern for the ex Interim body member “the forgotten heroes of Nagaland”. What could be more fitting than to talk about the heroes who ushered Statehood as we are just few days away from celebrating 50th year of Nagaland Statehood in 1st December. In the third and last Naga Peoples convention which was held at Mokokchung in 1959. The drafting committee formulated the Sixteen Point agreement, which they submitted to the Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. In agreement with the 16 point agreement, an interim body was formed in February 18,1961. The state of Nagaland Act 1962 provided for the formation of a separate State we know today as Nagaland State. On 1st December 1963 Nagaland officially became the 16th State of India. It was no doubt a great moment in history for Nagas to have a State of their own. However, only the interim body members knew the risk they took upon themselves for achieving that goal. They knew very well that they were putting their lives, the lives of near and dear ones at risk in accepting Statehood. Nevertheless, the brave souls took up the yoke of suffering and pain and accepted Statehood. After Nagaland became a State almost all of the Interim body Members spent many sleepless nights due to fear of being shot by the underground. Most of them slept at army camps. During day time they would go around with their
duties but during night they became prisoners confined within the walls of army camp. Many Interim body members escaped life attempts on them. To name a few Mr. T. Kikon, (1961-1963), Dr. Imkongliba Ao (1961-1963), Mr. M. Hepong Phom (1961-1963). Some Interim body members were not fortunate like Buding Phom ex IBM who became an Interim body member on May1962 was assassinated the same year on 29 August 1962 and Dr. Imkongliba Ao was assassinated on 24th Aug 1961 by our own Nagas. Even some young people lost their lives as they were accidentally shot while accompanying the Interim body members. Who remembers those precious lives lost? They were someone’s father, someone’s husband, and someone’s son. It is because of their sacrifice that today Naga MLA and Minister can sleep peacefully at night without the fear of being shot by someone. The only sleepless night they may be having could be because of wrong they might have committed to the public, and therefore their conscience may be haunting them depriving them of their precious sleep. Today Naga politicians can move freely at any time of the day and night without the fear of being shot. The freedom enjoyed by our Naga politicians today was bought with a heavy price; some had to pay it with their precious lives. Naga Politicians how would you like to thank them for the freedom you enjoy today The Interim Body Member walked from one village to the other village and even district to district on foot. Some were fortunate to travel on horses. Very few were fortunate enough to get jeep. The sacrifice they made has brought Nagaland to a position where Politician in Nagaland no longer walks on foot but on the latest cars available in the market. Naga Politicians how would you like to thank them for replacing “on foot and horses” tours to the “SUV’ or the “latest vehicle” and air-conditioned Tours? During their term as Interim body member, they did not use the Government money for free hand outs to the public neither did they stock up cash for themselves. They used it for the specific purpose. After using the required amount for state development all the reaming money sanctioned for State Development were returned untouched back to the Government. After their service as Interim body member they were paid Rs 200 per month as their pension. Even back in 1960’s Rs 300 was not enough. Many people came for help to them even after their time as interim body member was over. To get a rough picture of that time Imagine how many people you see when you go to visit a minister or a VIP at his office today and multiply it by 10. Having a heart of compassion for the public even after their term as Interim body member they continued to help the public in anyway they could. Most of them had to borrow money from relatives and neighbors and even sell their lands to help those who came to them for help. This ultimately put them in a position where they had to get food to feed the family on credit from the Grocery shops. Today after 50 years of Statehood only very few surviving interim body members are getting Rs.25,000/- It
has been only few years since their pension was raised to Rs 25,000/. There salary were stately from Rs300- Rs25,000 in about 50 years. I am sure not many would have imagined that they would live so long. It is truly the blessing of God that they are alive still today. Almost all of the ex. IBM’s did not have a vehicle and even most of them even today do not own a vehicles. Even Today they travel by auto Rickshaw and taxi packed with passengers and night super buses. After they reach their destination, they usually take bed rest for a day or two to regain their strength from the journey. They say when they see Ministers and MLA’s zooming by in their nice cars they just watch them. They did not tell me but I could sense that they wished they had a nice vehicle too. I mean a person with some amount of sense would like to have one of those SUV’s our politicians ride. The truth is if I was a living ex.IBM and was in good helath, and had sacrificed like them I would knock every available Government department doors to get me one of those nice BLACK SUV. However, I am not an ex. IBM so I will have to live without one. I am not saying that they need to be given a private jets and choppers service. Think Nagas what do they deserve for their honesty? Even sadder is that most of them even today travel on borrowed money to get to Kohima or distance places. Most of their children are graduate’s and post-graduates without any job’s like Government Job or even no cash to start a business therefore their children still today depend on them for financial support. In simple language, our living founding members of “Nagaland State” are financially “broke” and are living from “hand to mouth.” After all the sacrifice for Nagaland what have we given them? What has the Government of Nagaland given these heroes? Does our Government even know that few of our heroes are still alive? Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio who was also the president of Olympic Association and the Nagaland Archery Association announced cash award of Rs.25 Lakh and promises Rs. 1 Crore to a Naga Olympian Chekrovolü Swuro if she won any metal. Although she did not win any medal she was awarded a cash incentive of Rs 25 lakh as promised by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio. Well it seems our Chief Minister is a man who keeps his promise “occasionally”. She was also promised double-promotion from Sub-Inspector (SI) to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in acknowledgement of her achievements as the State’s only woman Olympian. I thought double promotion only happened in schools how ignorant of me. Well the point is that the Interim Body Members of 1961-1963 some of them who are still alive today won more than “gold metal” they won the “State of Nagaland” for the whole Nagas’ and they put Nagaland on the map of the world. Tell me how much of cash price these IBM should be given in acknowledgement of their achievements for winning a “State” for the “people of Nagaland” say 25laks or 1crore or 1million or 10 million each? How much of cash have they been awarded? Have they been ever acknowledged for their achievements and
sacrifice? How many of their sons or daughter been awarded double promotion at job or were even offered a job? When will the people of Nagaland honor them? Am I right when I say it is all right to honour a “Naga Olympian”, and that it is all right in God’s sight to honor our ex Interim body Members or say our “Naga Interim Olympians” Just recently when State Health and welfare Minister Azo Nienu found out that 13 members out of the 34 members of cultural trop that performed before Queen Elizabeth II during the Prime Ministership of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru were still alive. Azo Nienu himself personally honored the cultural troupe at his residence. Now that’s a real gentlemen. They did not ask for it, without being asked Azo Nienu honored them. Now it is clear some of the Interim body members are still alive. The question is will they be honored like the living 13 members of cultural troops were honored, any Naga politician gentlemen like Azo Nienu out there? If so honour these living Interim Members before they ask for it, because if you honour them after they ask, then it will not be seen as an honor but as a favor. Forgive me but I see no honour in that? Just Recently on Nagaland post there was a cash prize award of Rs. I million for the winner at the up coming Hornbill International Rock contest of 2013. 1 million is a lot of money. I thought it was a misprint but guess what it is true. I wish the present living Interim body members had a rock band. At least they could give it a shot at the Hornbill festival. If they win, they can split the prize among themselves. It is amazing how the organizers come up with such huge cash prizes like 1 million rupees. I strongly believe the organizers are serious people with great concern for the rock concert. We need such organizers who are true leaders who take matter seriously and make things happen. I wonder if the organizers of the present Hornbill International Rock Concert were in charge of organizing the 50th Statehood celebration on Dec 1, 2013, would they have come up with 1 million rupees for each ex Interim body members? I am very curious and I wonder has our Governor, Chief Minister of Nagaland and his colleges come out with any plans to honor these Interim Body Members during this 50th Statehood celebration? Or is it going to be the regular thank you for coming and some cultural trop dance and a long boring speech, vote of thanks with a good bye? Do they even know that some of them are alive? Has our Governor, Chief Minister and his colleges even considered how blessed they are to be the present Governor and Chief Minister and politicians of Nagaland at this time when we are about to celebrate 50th year of Statehood? How our Governor, Chief Minister and his colleges uses this opportunity to honour the ex Interim body members will clearly show how capable our Governor, Chief Minister and his colleges are in Governing our State. The whole world will be watching as Nagaland celebrates its 50th Year of Statehood. I pray that the Lord will give wisdom to the leaders who are in charge of the Statehood celebration event as they prepare for the upcoming Historic event in Nagaland His-
tory. We should all bear in mind that we are feasting on the fruits of the labor and sacrifices made by our ex Interim body members. There would have been no Nagaland State without their Scarifies, and certainly no Governor, no Chief Minister and even no MLA’s or Minister. There would have been no fancy titles like Chief Secretary or Director of Education, Director of Health and Family welfare, Director of this and Director of that department. Let us think for a second if you and I were in their place. If we had put our lives and the lives our loved ones at risk not knowing any moment could be our last moment, slept sleepless night, were shot at, walked for miles in the burning sun and extreme cold, were warned every day to quit our job and other one hundred such threats. How would have we handled the situation? Would we given up to save our lives and the lives of our near and dear ones or would have continued? Will this 50th year of Statehood celebration be such an event that it will become the “Event of the year” talked by everyone even in days to come? Will this 50th year of Statehood celebration be such an event that Nagas all over the world will be proud of and would use it as an illustration to show how Nagas honour their heroes? Or would it be one of those events that goes terribly wrong and that we would not want to talk about in the future? Will this be an event that will make the leaders of Nagaland say with regret “Oh if only we could have done that for our heroes it would have been so much better? Well there is still time. Today not many of them are alive. Yet very few of them are. This is a chance to show them that we really love them and appreciate their sacrifice for the whole of Nagas. Also to equally remember those heroes who are no more with us. We have to let them know that Nagas have not forgotten them. we have to honour them in such a away that they will say that it was worth the sacrifice, it was worth the pain, it was worth the tears, it was worth loosing ones life. This is one golden chance for the Nagaland Government and the people of Nagaland to say thank you to them all. Leaders of various organizations, unions, NGOS, federations and societies, Schools, colleges should take the opportunity at this 50th year of statehood to thank them for their sacrifice. I hope the leaders of our Nagaland Government and our Naga Society will seek wisdom from the Lord above to make this 50th year of Statehood celebration a Historic one. I would like to say thank you to our heroes the founders of Nagaland also know as the Interim body members both alive and dead. I salute you all for your sacrifice. Those who are alive today, May you out live your lives, and to those who are no more, you are more than alive today. Bless God for the parents who brought you into this world. Please allow me to be the first one to wish you heroes an advance happy and a blessed 50th year of Statehood to you heroes first, and also to all the Nagas in Nagaland and all around the world. May Nagaland grow from Strength to New Strength May Nagaland be ever for Lord Jesus Christ. God bless our Nagaland. IS Phom, Dimapur
Dangerous trend of privatising universal God Z K Pahrii Pou bTC, Pfutsero
Is God belongs to me alone, or to my family, my ethnic race, my religious affiliation or is God belong to everyone and the whole universe? Do we obey God or do we let God obey my commands? Is ‘born again’ simply implies that we can use God freely to pursue my desire to the extent of threatening others? In a simple way, are we using God or is God using us? Is God under our control or we are under the control of God? All scriptures affirmed that God created everything and therefore God alone is the Creator. Therefore, Bible prohibits human of creation and worshipping of idols. Consequently, Christians instead of worshiping idols create god to gratify their petty and selfish interests. They create a god (god-of-convenience) who can be easily lured by flattery, praise, worship, prayers and ‘liberal’ offerings. Why do people continue to create gods? People consider private property as the source of security. Influenced by the same logic, they seek appropriation of God also as their private property and seek security. Privatization and monopolization of God became a serious concern today. When God is privatized “I am holier than thou” attitude is developed. Then people became exclusive stubbornly roll themselves up in the cocoon of their belief. This can be seen through the life of both individual and groups. Today with each religious group/denomination claiming God to be their own, frequent religious (various faith affiliation/denominations) clashes occur. There are Baptists who feel that
only Baptist church members will go to heaven. Members belonging to Revival, Pentecostal, Presbyterians, Roman Catholic might be having the same thought that only those who are in their denomination will go to heaven. Many churches, associations and groups are in competition mood establishing prayer centres to own God. Even within the Church, men folk thought that they are nearer to God and that women cannot be given equal privileges in the church ministry. At the same time, there is division with some members or groups (for instance, prayer warriors) claiming to be more spiritual (more manipulative of God?) than others. A person who can stubbornly take fasting for many days (for whatever reason including selfish motif) is considered a very spiritual person. Such pseudo-spiritual-superiority-complex (or say superficial belief) was denounced by Jesus when He says: ‘On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you evildoers.’(Matt.7:21-23). We feel that since Nagaland is a Christian state or Christian majority state/region, God belongs to us alone. Unjustly superiority complex on the basis of one’s religion is developed and put into practice. When God does something good, it is only for us and not for others. When some ills/troubles affect us, we interpret it as preventive measures of God. We tend to say that God out of love send ills/troubles to keep us spiritually strong. If the same ills/
troubles happen to our neighbours (others), it is considered a curse from God for their disobedience and wickedness. If natural calamities hit Gujarat and Odisha (Orissa), it is punishment (curse) from God. If earthquake or hailstorm hits Nagaland or Mizoram, “it is not curse but God’s love” to bring people to God. So the self-righteous people -like uskeep on searching others’ sin - as if we are much better than others. This is not a new thing anyway. So often Jesus was asked for whose ‘sin’ a person was getting sick/blind/ lame or misfortune befalls on a person. Jesus told those seekers of ‘sin’ that everything has purpose in life and that they should love and accept one another as they are instead of searching each other’s sin and condemning one another. At one point of time, I thought that those who obey church rules and regulations sincerely are the only people who believe in God. But to my utter surprise, I came to realize that there are people like murderers, thieves, extortionists, black marketers (drug peddlers, ganja traders, wine sellers), are all super-believers in God. These people even prayed more than others did so that they are not killed by others, or are not caught by police while involving in unfair business and so on. Once they succeeded in their business, they give generously (huge amount of money) to church, so that God might protect them even in the future (I often hear many Christians saying sarcastically that the pitch of prayers of church leaders depend on the amount of money its member gives). They might have been influenced by distorted theologies that says ‘the more
one gives, the more one is rewarded.’ Expert thieves do the same. By thieves, I mean those officers, contractors, politicians, UG leaders, or any other who live luxuriously with money minted out from the share of the poor and common people. Their actions have created and are creating many ‘robbers’ in our JerusalemJericho road today. However, many of these people are sponsoring missionaries, theological students and donating huge amount of money to theological institutions as if such ‘appeasing policy’ would please God. Many rich people are lavishly offering Christmas feast. Sometime they sponsor different programmes such as father’s camp, mother’s camp, youth camp and spiritual awakening programme. Huge donations were given for church buildings, Jubilee memorial Hall etc, by those who indulge in unfair trade. This is how we try to lure God with money as much as we lure a dog with a morsel of rice. Fortunately, God is not a bribe-taker. We cannot bribe God (like we bribe a minister, a political leader or a government official) in order to fulfil our favours. God will not forsake justice and righteousness for the sake of money. However such behaviour shows how people attempt to privatise God and use for their personal end. Remember, our prayers are full of petition: ‘give me that’, ‘give me this’, ‘do for me this”, ‘do for me that’ etc. etc. Our prayers are most of the time ‘order’ - forcing God to obey us like a servant and are hardly a prayer of submission: ‘let your will be done’. Ours are not prayer of humbleness or willingness to sacrifice for God. We do not seek the will of God. We
wanna God to fully submit to our convenience. Even lazy students ask God to help them pass their exam. Jesus did not force God to do his will because that would tantamount to controlling God. Think, God must be getting thousands, may be millions, of prayers all the time, from all over the world, in a host of languages, asking for all manner of things. But we are not feeling shy at all to force God to do something for us (good or bad). We became a very ‘impatient being’- craving to get things done within a short period of time. Even today, Jesus must be interceding for us “forgive them for they do not know what they do.” Many of our churches begin worship service with chasing away or denial of ‘evil spirit’ or ‘Satan’ in the name of God. Interesting as it might be but why bother about such ‘spirits’ because God (who is above all forces) is with us in our worship. The church is a place of reconciliation and not a place of anger. We do not come to Church to quarrel with anyone including evil spirits. We come to Church to worship the true God. Unfortunately many Naga churches start worship service in angry mood chasing the supposedly ‘evil spirit’ and end up the service fearing ‘evil spirit’ rather than worshipping the true God. Well friends, on many counts I find the observation of fasting as a tactic forcing God to fulfil one’s desire which is very dangerous practice. We must be aware that fasting is important in so far as it helps one to discipline oneself spiritually and physically to be a better person even as Jesus did. Fasting can be observed to meditate and reflect upon
the word of God. It is also a means to break injustice of political administration as in Esther’s story. It is also time to build good relationship with God and fellow beings. But, today fasting has been used to fulfil an individual or group’ desire. If a drug peddler fast many days seeking God’s help to let his/her vehicle passes through safely at Police Check gate, is that genuine? Whether we are right or wrong we want God to be in our side and use God for our interests. Do we believe that God will be on our side all the time (whether we are right or wrong)? Is not God belongs to everyone? Is it right to use God to serve our own interest? It is unwise on our part to force God to fulfil our desires through employing different tactics. We need to humble before God. It will be too dangerous to think that God can be privatised, domesticated, tamed and put on a leash. We cannot draw out Leviathan with fish-hook (Job 41:1ff ). God can move high mountains and stir up mighty ocean to fulfil God’s plan. In the same way, God can perform miracles through small and insignificant things such as a ‘stick’ (Moses), a pebble (David), a fish (Jonah), fire (Elijah), Jaw bones (Samson), Oil (Elisha), bread and fish (Jesus), etc. God is immeasurable by any human standard. Privatisation of God limits God’s greatness. Blind faith restricts God to ‘self-interest’ resulting to disharmony, violence, and hatred in society. Therefore, let God’s immeasurable knowledge and unfathomable love and the greatness of God hover over the whole universe. Within that realm let all people bow their heads and worship the true God.

PRIDE: the Vice Straight from Hell

ot many people will openly admit of having pride as one of their weakness. That is why I was surprised when this boy came to me and said, “I am too proud. I want to learn how to be humble.” I didn’t know where to begin but I immediately remembered C.S. Lewis’ writing, “If anyone would like to acquire humility, I can, I think, tell him the first step. The first step is to realise that one is proud. At least nothing whatever can be done before it. If you think you are not conceited, it means you are very conceited indeed.” So that was where we began our discussion that day. Pride is dangerous because, essentially, it is competitive in nature. It is a very unhealthy and destructive kind of a competition. Lewis said a person is not proud because he is rich, successful and good-looking. But he is proud because he is richer, more
successful and better looking than others around him. It is the comparison and the competition that makes a man proud. There is so much of this unhealthy comparison and competition in our society. We are just trying to outdo one another: individuals, tribes, [and I suspect even churches]. That person has a car, so I must have a better car. That woman is gaining popularity too fast, I must keep up before she overtakes me. As long as there is someone around who is more powerful, successful and richer, the proud man will never rest in peace because there is an enemy and a rival still left to conquer. This evil facet of pride always alienates people. C.S. Lewis says that other vices can sometimes bring people together. There can often be a lot of laughter and merrymaking among drunken and immoral people, but never among people who are proud. Pride always brings enmity among people. Pride can smuggle its way comfortably into the very centre of
our religious and social lives, and, in our case, often fuels tribalism. The most evil thing about pride is that it is not just enmity among people, it is enmity against God. A proud person can never face God because God is a force he will never be able to outdo and outsmart.
the Devil directly instils in us a piece of his very evil nature straight from Hell. His pride was one of the reasons he fell from Heaven. He thought he could do better than God. There are a lot of people in our religious circle who think they can actually do better than God. That’s
That’s why teachers say that pride, unlike the other temptations, comes straight from Hell. In other “lesser” temptations, the Devil often uses the animal instinct in us to lure us into sin, like the sin of adultery, murder, of stealing and corruption, etc. But in committing the sin of pride
why we don’t seek God enough and prefer to go our own way. Pride is more than dangerous than we think because it is not always sin. A healthy sense of pride in our achievement is basic to our human fulfilment. In the parable of the talents, there was a sense of pride
when the servants presented their work and achievements to the master, and Jesus affirmed that. Then there is the pleasure in being praised. We all love being praised, and if it drives us to do better, praise will definitely do us well. But if the praise we receive from others leads us to say, “Hey, I must be a really great person for people to praise me so much”, then we are in trouble. But the most dangerous thing is to think that we don’t need the praise of other people to do well. We are not working for the praise of other people. But if we are doing well, praise will definitely come, and we need grace and humility to accept that and thank them. And finally how can we identify a humble person? Clearly, he will not be someone who goes around saying, “Hey I am a humble person”, or a man who stands up on the church pulpit to tell you what an unworthy and worthless person he is. Such characters annoy and irritate. Humility should refresh and elevate. If you happen to meet a per-
son who refreshes you and makes you realise that you are not a worthless person after all; a person who seems to enjoy life and is not easily annoyed by pride or circumstances around him; if you find a person who seem truly interested in you and what you do; and if after meeting him you go away feeling even a tiny pinch of greatness revived in your soul; then you can be sure that you have met a truly humble person. But the truly humble person is the Man and God Jesus Christ who not only made me feel like a prince, but even promised to make me one someday. He came to serve sinners and to die for a fault that was not his. Who can resist such humility! If His followers exhibit more of this humility of the master, winning the world wouldn’t be such a difficult thing. I finally finished my discourse on pride, which my friend faithfully tried to follow through. That day I realised what a lousy counsellor I was when he finally looked up and said, “Thank you. Now I think I am not that proud after all!” That took us back to square one.

od’s demand of ‘holiness’ from humanity pops up with an impetuous question in the temple of minds as busy as beaver in the morning. Why should a man sinful in nature grovel to God to be holy unless the very sinful nature is being rooted out? The very phrase, “be holy for I am holy” seems to be an elusive demand upon humanity to go completely gaga. But the demand to be holy is not just an articulation of human artifice. However, the another frisky problem adds fuel to the fire, What if we are sinful in nature and does not possess any quality of divine nature, how do we become holy for holiness cannot be produced from ungodly nature and vice versa? Thus, the question of ‘holy nature’ in human adds insult to injury in the mindset. We often get frustrated after realizing the absence of any phenomenal lodestars to become holy. Nevertheless, one shouldn’t be deciduous to this kind of mentality because a watched pot never boils. God created us in His own image (holy nature) but we have interspersed it and distorted the very nature of God, our creator. However, it does not mean amendable that we lost it forever, but shadowed by the evil force. When Adam and Eve first committed sin, suddenly they covered themselves with loincloths out of fear/shame, thus they dressed with evil. Genesis 3:7. Again, Paul identified two forces/ laws in him at works behind his actions. He discerned as ‘good’ and an ‘evil’ force, that when he tries to do something good, God propelled him through his less action and he did it beyond gimmicky publicity. Henceforth, the intertwined duality of human nature has been identified. Of which Christ mission triumphed over the evil nature and implanted with his alpine nature which is holy. Hence, the impossible is made possible; to live a righteous and holy life. Living a holy life does not necessarily mean to become God but to live a Godly life. It means to trim oneself to live a life that is pleasing to God. Paul has given three main steps to meet the demand of God to His believers for a new Kingdom. Step one- To remove the old self; “You were taught to put away your former way of life, your old self, corrupt and deluded by its lust, and to renewed in the spirit of you minds, and to clothes yourselves with the new self, created according to the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness” (Eph 4:22-24). Step two- To remove old thinking and attitude; “Our old self was crucified, that we should no longer be slaves to sin” (Romans 6:6).And “Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord” (5:10) The presence of divine power brings into a new quality of life that is to be found fullest from the individual. Therefore, we should strive to live to the way we are made. Step three- To walk in the newness of life in Christ; “There is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see! Everything has become new!”(2cor.5:17). Through new Adam a new impetus to new beginning was made for humanity. Therefore, Christ becomes the head of a new type of humanity, as Adam was the head of the old. 1Peter. 1:16 as the traveller, the racer, the warrior, and the labourer, gathered in their long and loose garments, that they might be ready in their business, so let Christians do by their minds and affections. Be sober, be watchful against all spiritual dangers and enemies, and be temperate in all be-
haviour. Be sober-minded in opinion, as well as in practice, and humble in your judgment of yourselves. A strong and perfect trust in the grace of God is agreeable with best endeavours in our duty. Holiness is the desire and duty of every Christian. It must be in all affairs, in every condition, and towards all people. We must especially watch and pray against the sins to which we are inclined. The written word of God is the surest rule of a Christian’s life, and by this rule we are commanded to be holy in every way. God makes those holy whom he saves. The words ‘Ye shall be holy’ occur five times in the Book of Leviticus (Pulpit Commentary). God called the Israelites to be his peculiar people, a kingdom of priests and a holy nation (Exodus 19: 5, 6). He has called Christians to be “a chosen, a peculiar people” (1Peter 2:9). We who are His must strive to be holy, separated from all that is impure, consecrated to his service. Leviticus 11: 44- I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves along the ground. Leviticus 11:45- I am the Lord, who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy. Leviticus 19: 2- “Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy”. Leviticus 20:7- “Consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am the Lord your God”. Isaiah 35: 8- And a highway will be there; it will be called the way of Holiness; it will be for those who walk on that way. The unclean will not journey on it; wicked fools will not go about on it. The argument for holiness of life, from the nature and perfection of God, is strong. An argument the apostles knew must have weight with these persons, who were chiefly Jews, scattered abroad among the Gentiles, and had a value for the scriptures of truth; and though holiness, equal to God, is never to be attained by a creature, yet so far as it is capable of it, it is desirable, because it is agreeable both to the nature and will of God, by all such who are truly his children, who love his name, adore his perfection, give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness, fear his goodness, and obey his will. Scripture is the true source of all authority in questions of doctrine and practice. “Be ye... for I am- It is with whom ye have to do. Ye are mine. As I am the fountain of holiness, being holy in My essence, be ye therefore zealous to be partakers of holiness, that ye may be as I also am”. God is essentially holy: the creature is holy in so far as it is sanctified by God. God, in giving the command, is willing to give also the power to obey it, namely, through the sanctifying of the Spirit. (1Peter 1:2). The emblazon doctrine of an expiation; justification and reconciliation are also reduced to the edge of losing its impact irreversibly to our faith, if the layout concept of sinful in nature is in progress. Because these doctrines are the acts terminating the sinful nature which has passed through one man’s sin. Christ died once for all. But the old thinking of sinful nature seems unbridle to require another Christ. This rectitude present before Jesus Christ and the life with Immanuel must be revived and experienced. Otherwise, the life in Christ does not portray any difference from Jews Judaism who is still expecting the MESSIAH to deliver them from both evil and human domination. Hence, we cannot be prone in sinning for we are no more the slaves of sin but have become the slaves of God (Rom.6:22) It is not irrevocable to be holy for we are made to be holy. God’s demand to be holy should be responded
rather than seeking an excuse, because to think in otherwise is to think of God’s madness demand upon humanity to be Holy. Had Christ dodged from death for our sinful nature which we have inherited from Old Adam, there is no way out from our grotto-work of sinful nature to become holy; so the demand of God “be holy” does not arise. (1peter: 1:15-16). For holiness is the very nature of God which differentiates between good and evil. Hence, the indifferent attitude towards the life with Old Adam and the life with New Adam blurred the condition of life in Christ and imperilled God’s call as madness demand. Therefore we cannot remain hinge in the old life and in old thinking. This is the very reason why Paul rebuked the Jews Christian Community for having unrealistic attitude towards the new beginning of life in Christ from the old self. And the same is implied to us. If Paul is with us today, he would have corrected us of being leery of Jesus’ promise and dithering to the call of holiness. With this quest, I suspect our tendency in committing sin might be because of friableness to sinful in nature, that propel us to give negative responses to our call – such as, inability to overcome, lack in courage, tendency to go astray, an imperious leeway which impound the meaning of new humanity in Christ and impinge the price of Christ sacrificial act. Committing sin become our habit ever since we acquired from the cradle of life and experienced the existence of sin. Because psychologically speaking, when we continue to do the same practice, it becomes our habit and our habit becomes our nature. Thus, our sin is dominated us which influence us to do. Thereto, in short, sin is adopted not inherited. (Romans: 5:21, 6:12 & 6:14). Hence, We may be thinking it right to consider ourselves sinful in nature to implicate our deeds by means of propitiation and worship, but we need to contend to avoid tumble into this guilt-ridding, because this conceal the significance of Christ’ crucifixion for the lost souls. As the proverbs clearly warns us that, there is a way seems right to a man at first but leads to death at the end. Our God is not mad for He will never demand which can never be done. In spite of His assurance, His demand to be holy is arrogated as gobbledygook for worldly being, because we consider ourselves “sinful in nature” without fully realising, once God forgives, He remembers no more. Hence, the divine forgiveness should not be interpreted into human level of forgiveness. If Jesus sacrificial act for the sinners is not enough to take away our sinful nature, how can we walk in the newness of life in new Adam? Hence, refusing to evade from the locus of grumpiness towards God’s demand should be exempted rather than getting a goose bumps by questioning oneself, because this dead conscience is the sliding ship to the ocean of sin, for if our attitude is sinful in nature, our tendency to commit sin will always increase. In fact, we cannot live just as a dead duck in between the holy and the worldly life, but we should strive to live what we ought to be. He (Jesus) accepts us just the way we are, but refuses to leave us alone to be just as we are. Therefore, over God’s demand, we must not cut each other’s throats, for He isn’t mad at us but to make His joy complete, He demands us to live a righteous life which can be achieved only when we avoid going with the fairies. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God – what is good and acceptable and perfect (Romans 12:2). Greet you with a Holy Kiss!

ichael Card once lamented, “America is in deep trouble; our churches are full but our lives are empty.” I wonder if this lamentation reflects our community, today, as well? Our churches are full (at least on Sundays) but our markets, offices, schools, homes, organizations, etc. are infested with corruption. What has gone wrong with Nagas and their faith? Is our Christianity powerless? Is our faith a fake? Is our worship superficial and ritualistic? Is our relationship with our Creator just a mere concept? The reason for political turmoil, social disorder, and economic disparity could be more than one. But, the main cause our society’s problems is spiritual bankruptcy because if we are not right with God, nothing can be right. To make a society a just society the church has great role to play. It must first become a living church and produce active Christians who will live out their faith in the world. Filling the church does not necessarily make a church a living church. A church full of activities is not necessarily a lively church either because it could be just a busybody. A living church is a church that genuinely worships the Lord. Therefore, to keep our churches alive, we must learn to worship the Lord, in whom and for whom we live.
How Then Should We Worship? Worship is not new to anyone regardless of religions; we “do” it every day, we hear about it every day, and we talk about it every day. But, worship in our context has gone terribly wrong! We’ve reduced worship to a mere ritual at the expense of personal response to God. Our churches are also infested with entertainment rather than worship. At times, praise and worship is reduced to performance instead of leading people to worship. Many Christians feel that, the worship service is boring if they are not entertained. Many churches are stagnant because the way worship is done is superficial – outward performance dominates inward experience. If we wish to keep our churches alive, we must learn to “worship in spirit and in truth.”
“Worship in Spirit and Truth”: Worshiping God “in spirit and in truth” is one of the most frequently used phrase by worship leaders either in call to worship or invocation prayer, quoted from John 4. But, what is worshipping God “in spirit and in truth” anyway? Please note that, it is “in spirit,” not “in Spirit.” The former denotes the “strength of mind” and the later denotes “the Spirit of God.” When Jesus said, “God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in spirit and in truth” (John 4:21-24), Jesus was showing that worship would no longer be bound to a certain time or place (neither in Jerusalem where the Jews worshipped, nor Mount Gerizim, where the Samaritans worshipped). Rather, it was going to be a function of the spirit of man and woman reaching out to the Spirit of God as response to God’s revelation. Jesus knew the time was shortly to come when Mosaic sacrifices at Jerusalem would be outdated, and worship would occur within the New testament temple – man himself/woman herself (1 Corinthians 3:16). Worship can now happen any time, wherever a Spirit-inhabited person may be. Jesus also indicated that as a function of the spirit, true worship is more than just an outward ritual. Worship is our spirit corresponding with God’s Spirit. Under the old covenant, worship was a series of outward ceremonies that did not necessarily involve the heart response of the participants. Through Isaiah, God lamented, “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men” (Isaiah 29:13) The sought-after worshippers will worship not only in spirit but in truth, Jesus said. In his discourse with the Samaritan woman in John 4, he definitely distinguished between ignorant worship (you the Samaritans worship what you do not know) and intelligent worship (we worship what we do know). Worship that involves only the spirit is insufficient; the mind must also be exerted. Our reason must help us to practice the right kind of spiritual
act of worship, so that our action becomes right. In 1 Corinthians 14:15, Paul says, I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.” This is worshipping God in spirit and in truth. The second obvious application of worship in truth is that worship must be through Jesus Christ, who is the truth (John 14:6). Those who do not recognize the mediation of our great High Priest cannot approach God and therefore cannot find that intimacy of relationship which fosters worship. Churches are dying because of improper worship. Mission fields are dying because of improper worship or lack of worship. Setting our Perspective Right: “Worship” and “Begging” are two different things; the former is giving, whereas the latter is receiving. “Receiving” is not worship, but “giving” is, although receiving aspect is not fully ruled out. Receiving is the result of correct giving. Suppose, a man goes to an MLA with gifts to thank him and honor him for his com-
mendable works in the constituency. . . . Another man goes to the same MLA to ask some money for Christmas, for his children’s fees, for meeting his personal needs, etc. Which person will please the MLA? The answer is obvious: “of course, the first person!” The attitude of worship should be same with the first person who went to give than to receive. Worship comes from the Greek word proskune and Hebrew word shakah. Proskune is to prostrate and shakah is “service” or “to serve.” Therefore, primarily, we don’t go to church to receive blessings, but to offer our praise and adoration to God . . . then God blesses us for doing the right thing. But, if we go to church for our own benefit all the time, God is never worshipped, and our spiritual life ultimately dies down
The Primacy of Worship: The Exodus 7:16; 8:1; 8:20; 9:1; 9:13; 10:3 (these verses repeatedly say, “let my people go, so that they may worship me); and 10:24 “Go worship the Lord.” Our general understanding of God’s purpose in delivering the Israelites from the bondage of Egyptians was to free them from oppression and to give them the land of Canaan, a land flowing with milk and honey. But, looking at these verses from Exodus (mentioned above), we realize that the primary purpose letting the Israelites go from Pharaoh’s hands was to enable to worship God. Satan’s primary purpose in the “Temptation of Jesus” was to distract him from worshipping the Father. Thus, Satan told Jesus, “All these I will give you . . . If you will bow down and worship me” (Matthew 4:9). Jesus’ reply indicates further that, God alone should be worshipped and served. Worship is so important to God because He created us for that purpose. “The chief end of man (mankind) is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever” (Westminster’s Catechism). God created us for His pleasure (Rick Warren). God’s greatest pleasure is His creations worshipping Him. The preacher reiterates that, “All is vanity but to fear God and keep His commandment is the whole duty of man and woman” (Ecclesiastes 12:13). In the story of Mary and Martha, Jesus said, “only one thing is needful” that is to sit at the Master’s feet and listen to Him (Luke 10:42). If we are to revive of churches, we must learn to worship. If we are to revive our mission fields, we must help others to worship. Only if each one of us begins to worship God in spirit and in truth, God will forgive our sins and heal our churches, our society, and our land. Keep your church alive!

PM warns of atteMPts to disruPt Polls
New Delhi, November 23 (iANS): There may be attempts to disrupt the 2014 Lok Sabha and the ongoing assembly elections and security forces need to be careful and measured in their response to such incidents, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said here Saturday. Resurgence of terrorist groups, particularly Lashkar-e-Taiba, and increased infiltration attempts call for heightened vigil and coordination by the security forces, Manmohan Singh said in his address at a conference of state police chiefs. “There is also a likelihood of attempts to disrupt the forthcoming Lok Sabha and assembly elections. The security forces also need to be careful and measured in their response to militant attacks as well as law and order disturbances,” he said. This year, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a few brazen attacks on security forces, he said. “The situation along the Interna-
tional Border and the Line of Control, particularly in Poonch district of Jammu region, has remained volatile with several ceasefire violations,” he said. On the four terror attacks in Hyderabad, Bangalore, Bodh Gaya and Patna so far, Manmohan Singh said: “The disclosures made by the arrested members of the terrorist outfits confirm our apprehensions that the Indian hinterland remains an active area of operation for these outfits.” “Therefore, we need to ensure that our security apparatus and intelligence sharing platforms such as the multi-agency centre constantly hone their skills to stay ahead of the nefarious designs of these terrorist outfits,” he said. “However, while dealing with terror cases, care needs to be taken that security forces remain scrupulously bipartisan so that our people do not lose faith in the professionalism of investigative agencies and the secular nature of our
polity,” he added.
States told to handle communal violence firmly Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed worry over the communal violence in Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh last September and said state governments have the responsibility of tackling such disturbances with utmost firmness. Addressing the annual director generals of police conference here, the prime minister reminded the senior police officials of rising expectations from them on the part of the general public, saying they were responsible for preventing crimes against women and must also ensure sensitive treatment of victims during investigation and trial. He said some states have witnessed a substantial increase in the number of communal incidents and a major communal clash in Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh last September took a large toll of lives, leaving thousands of inno-

New Delhi, November 23 (iANS): A diagnostics test for human papilloma virus (HPV) can reduce by a third the incidence of cervical cancer in women worldwide, an expert said at a seminar here Saturday. According to Zoya Brar, co-founder and managing director of Core Diagnostics, a high-end clinical laboratory, cervical cancer is the most frequent cancer among Indian women. There are approximately 132,000 cases of cervical cancer diagnosed annually in India. “More women in India die from cervical cancer than in any other country,” Brar said at the first Indian Cancer Congress (ICC) that concludes Sunday at Kem-
pinski Ambience Hotel in New Delhi. “The deaths from this preventable disease will rise unless awareness in women increases and elevates the need for a more robust screening paradigm for cervical cancer,” added Brar whose laboratory is focused on advanced testing techniques and expertise in cardiology, oncology, reproductive disorders, and endocrinology. Brar said she was alarmed at the level of ignorance about cervical cancer during her interactions at a camp organised by Core Diagnostics in Punjab in September. “Almost one third of cervical cancer can be prevented if HPV testing is used as primary screening
test instead of the cytology test.” According to data available at the conference, every third oral cancer patient in the world is from India. While in males, cancers of the oral cavity and lung are the most common causes of cancer incidence and death, in females cervical and breast cancer are the main causes of cancer related illnesses and death. Experts like Brar said while the government has become proactive, a cervical screening programme was initiated by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) across various cities in the country. The motive was to prevent cases of cervical cancer by detecting and treating abnormal changes
in the cells of the cervix, which can be the precursors of
cancer. The four-day sponsored by Core Diagnostics is being hosted by the Association of Radio Oncologists of India (AROI), the Indian Association of Surgical Oncology (IASO), the Indian Society of Medical and Pediatric Oncology (ISMPO), the Indian Society of Oncology (ISO), and the Oncology Forum. Over 250 expert speakers and some 5,000 delegates are attending the conference which is expected to act as a catalyst for further research, treatment and dissemination of knowledge in the field of cancer.
quested the investigators to “examine and release the CCTV footage so that the accurate version of events stands clearly revealed”. Sources however said that the CCTV footage does show the victim leaving the elevator “in a hurry” on one occasion. Mishra also did not rule out bringing Tehelka’s alleged attempts to cover up the crime in the ambit of the investigation. Meanwhile, reports quoting the victim claimed that the accused Tejpal’s well-wishers had gotten in touch with her and had started “pressurising her”. The victim is daughter of a former colleague of Tejpal, who has recused himself from his post as editor after being accused of sexual assault by the victim. The matter came to light after intra-office communication between Tejpal, Chaudhury and the victim was leaked to the media last week, even as Chaudhury has been accused of trying to hush up the matter.
to calculate: Diarrhoea, caused by contaminated food, water and environment, is still the second deadliest killer of children in the world, killing 1,600 children every day. Kumar said that the attention and funding given to sanitation and diarrhoea - which is easily preventable with adequate sanitation, safe water and good hygiene - have for decades been dwarfed by that given to other causes and challenges. When the Millennium Development Goals - a set of targets to reduce poverty and better maternal health and education amongst other things - were signed in 2000, sanitation wasn’t even mentioned, he added.
New Delhi/hyDerAbAD, November 23 (iANS): YSR Congress party chief Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy Saturday called on President Pranab Mukherjee and urged him to keep Andhra Pradesh united. Opposing the central government’s decision to carve out a separate Telangana state, he met the president at Rashtrapati Bhavan and submitted a five-page memorandum. The parliamentarian from Kadapa explained to Pranab Mukherjee the problems the bifurcation would lead to and requested him to ensure that the state remains united. Jagan, as he is popularly known, told reporters after the meeting that he conveyed to the president that the centre was trying to divide the state in an arbitrary manner. He also told the president that this could set a bad precedent for division of other states. The MP said the division would complicate the problem of river water sharing and would also affect the interests of government employees and students. This was Jagan’s second meeting with the president on the same is-
sue. He had earlier called on Mukherjee when the latter had visited Hyderabad Nov 4. Meanwhile, the main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has found fault with the president giving an appointment to Jagan for the second time in less than 20 days. TDP leader S. Chandramohan Reddy said the first citizen’s meeting with a man accused in a corruption case would send a wrong message to people. Jagan, who spent nearly 16 months in jail was released on bail in September. A CBI court this week relaxed bail conditions to enable him to visit Delhi and other parts of the country. The YSR Congress chief is visiting the national capital and other states to mobilise support from other parties to oppose Andhra Pradesh’s bifurcation. He met Trinamool Congress leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata two days ago. Jagan is scheduled to meet Janata Dal-United chief Sharad Yadav in Delhi Saturday evening. He will be visiting Bhubaneswar Sunday to meet Biju Janta Dal leader and Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik.

Tejpal likely to be arrested, victim alleges pressure New Delhi/PANAji, November 23 (iANS): The arrest of Tarun Tejpal, the 50-year-old founder of Tehelka news magazine who is accused of sexually assaulting an employee, seemed imminent, Delhi Police sources indicated Saturday, even as the victim claimed that she was being pressurised by people close to him. A three-member Goa Police team, which arrived in the national capital around 11.30 a.m., reached Tehelka office in south Delhi and scrutinised documents, including on the laptop and I-pad of the magazine’s managing editor Shoma Chaudhury. The team, which was accompanied by Delhi Police personnel, questioned Chaudhury and some other Tehelka employees. They also recorded her statement and also took into their possession a string of emails which circulated between her, Tejpal, the victim and her friends as evidence, according to Goa Police
sources. Delhi Police sources said that the Goa Police team can also question Tejpal, and might arrest him, following orders from senior officials of that state’s police force. Several friends of the victim who were among the first ones to learn about the sexual assault in an elevator at a Goa five star resort last week were also questioned by the police team. The team is expected to question Tejpal Sunday, even as police sources say that the journalist’s whereabouts are not yet known to the Goa Police. Earlier in the day, as the Goa Police team left for New Delhi, state Deputy Inspector General of police O.P. Mishra told reporters in Panaji that media reports which suggested that the victim would cooperate with the police investigation was an “encouraging” sign. “I have seen news in one of the new channels and I do welcome this. This is an encouraging gesture for investigating
agency from the victim. But I will not discuss anything,” Mishra told reporters, urging the media to not “concentrate focus of reporting on nitty-gritty of investigation”. The victim, in her complaint to Chaudhury, said that Tejpal had sexually assaulted her twice in the elevator in the Club House section of the Grand Hyatt five star resort during the high-profile ThinkFest con-
ference on Nov 7-8. The name of legendary actor Robert De Niro, who participated in the event, also finds inadvertent mention in the Goa Police FIR, a copy of which is in possession of IANS. “Let’s go wake up Bob (De Niro) and I asked him why he wanted to do that. I then realized that Mr Tejpal was simply pressing buttons on the lift’s panel
to make the elevator stay in circuit, preventing it from stopping anywhere, and for the doors to open,” says the FIR quoting from the written complaint sent by the victim to Chaudhury. De Niro, had in most likely retired for the night in his VIP suite, only a few metres away. In another reference to De Niro, the victim told Chaudhury in her complaint: “The door opened on the second floor, on Mr. De Niro’s floor - and he (Tejpal) said again - ‘The universe is telling us something’ to which I said ‘I’m taking the stairs’ and started to walk out. “He pulled me back in, sensing that I was on the verge of hysteria - by this point, he was totally comfortable physically manhandling me, but sensing my sheer panic.” However, in what could be a setback to the police investigation, Mishra said that the hotel had no CCTVs installed in the elevators. Tejpal in a statement released Friday has also re-
PAtNA, November 23 (iANS): Re-affirming his commitment of toiletsfor-all, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar Saturday said that open defecation is an affront to human dignity and his government will ensure that this problem is addressed in an urgent manner. Earlier, he had said that those lacking a toilet in their homes will not be allowed to contest panchayat or urban local body elections in Bihar. “Open defecation is an affront to human dignity, a curse to humanity. As someone bestowed with people’s affection to serve them, I feel it is my utmost duty to ensure them a life of dignity. Access to toilets are
at the core of this,” Kumar said in his latest blog. The blog stated, “We are committed to bring the necessary amendments to the Bihar Panchayati Raj Act and other statutes governing the elections of urban bodies to raise public awareness about the benefits of toilets in houses.” “The central government had aimed to construct 1.11 crore (over 11 million) toilets in the state, our records show that 2.19 crore (21.9 million) families do not have a toilet in their home,” it added. Bihar, the second most populous state in the country, has an estimated population of 100 million people. Recalling his government’s measure to con-
struct toilets in every household of the state, Kumar said, “Inspired by Lohia’s (Ram Manohar Lohia) vision and my personal conviction, we had designed and launched the unique Lohia Swachhata Yojana in 2006 with an aim to ensure toilets-for-all.” “I am proud to note that, other than Maharashtra, Bihar was the only state to have launched a unique scheme to address the problem of open defecation. The Lohia Swachhata Yojana was designed to achieve the objective of providing sustainable toilets to all households by 2015,” he said. “I am of the firm belief that ensuring a dignified life - and providing basic
facilities to its people - is a fundamental duty of the state. If my government can ensure this existential decorum for the people of Bihar, this will be one of my biggest achievements,” said the Bihar chief minister. “This has been an enduring dream, and close to my heart - and seeing it happening in my lifetime shall give me immense solace,” added Nitish Kumar. Kumar said he had announced this year that the panchayats achieving 100 percent target of constructing toilets would be given the Nirmal Gram Panchayat prize of Rs.5 lakh each. The Nirmal Prakhand award would carry Rs.25 lakh in prize for blocks for conducting a cleanliness drive.
“My effort is aimed at addressing a fundamental woe of human civilization, a cause for which Mahatma Gandhi spent considerable efforts. My head sinks with shame when I am told that over 600 million people in India or 53 percent of Indian households today have to suffer the humiliation of defecating in the open,” Nitish Kumar said. “It is sad, as WHO has noted, that every day, nearly two billion tons of human faeces, with a dizzying number of potential viruses, bacteria and worm eggs, are lying around our planet ready to be trodden on, touched or ingested in water and food,” he added. He pointed that the consequences are not difficult

Chew more, eat less? Study suggests
NEW YOrK, NOvEmbEr 23 (rEUTErS HEAlTH): People who increased the number of times they chewed their food before swallowing ate less over the course of a meal, in a new study. Slow eaters tend to be slimmer. But researchers didn’t know whether asking people to chew more would change the amount of food they ate. They found meal sizes shrunk when adults chewed extra before swallowing - whether they were normal weight, overweight or obese. “The study reinforces the benefits of taking time to chew food well and enjoy the variety of textures and flavors in our meals,” registered dietician Constance Brown-Riggs told Reuters Health in an email. Brown-Riggs is a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and was not involved in the new research. Prospective study participants were asked to consume five portions of Totino’s pizza rolls and count the number of times they chewed each roll. Researchers did not tell them what specifically was being tested in the study. Forty-seven people went on to finish the study. Sixteen were a normal weight, 16 were overweight and 15 were obese. Those participants attended three weekly lunchtime test sessions. On each day, researchers gave them 60 pizza rolls and told them to eat until they were full. Depending on the session, researchers asked people to chew every bite the same number of times as at their test visit, 50 percent more or twice as many times. They also asked participants how full they were feeling before, during and after each lunch session. Researchers found people ate about 10 percent less food, corresponding to 70 fewer calories, when they increased their chewing by 50 percent. When they doubled their chewing, they ate 15 percent less food and 112 fewer calories. Normal-weight participants ate more slowly than overweight and obese participants. Across the board, people spent more time eating when they increased their chewing. The participants rated their appetite the same after each meal even though slower chewing reduced how much they ate, according to findings published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Researchers noted that the study was conducted under laboratory conditions, so it’s not clear how it would translate to normal life. Long-term studies are needed to look at the effect of extra chewing on weight and other markers of disease. “Increasing the number of chewing cycles before swallowing can reduce food intake and increase satiety,” James Hollis told Reuters Health in an email. He worked on the study at Iowa State University in Ames. “However, it is not clear if this is a practical approach to weight management,” Hollis said. The researchers are now looking to see whether how fast people eat, for instance, influences how much they consume. m“It takes about 20 minutes for the brain to signal your stomach that you’re full,” Brown-Riggs said. “Fast eaters can consume a large amount of food within that 20-minute period resulting in more calories, which can lead to overweight or obesity. This may be why participants in this study reduced their food intake. Increasing the number of chews increased the meal duration,” she said.

U.S. climate envoy Todd Stern wondered whether that meant that China was no longer ready to put forth commitments for the new deal. “I hope I’m wrong about what I heard, but it would certainly be disappointing to move backward in time
not forward toward Paris,” Stern said. The plenary was suspended to give delegates a chance to work on new texts. bEIJING, NOvEmbEr 23 (AP): China’s largest oil refiner Sinopec on Saturday apologized for explosions from a ruptured oil pipeline that killed 47 people and injured 136 others in one of the country’s worst industrial accidents this year. Sinopec’s expansion of petrochemical projects has met with resistance from members of the public, and Friday’s blasts in the eastern port city of Quingdao will likely add to growing concern about safety and environmental risks. The accident was the deadliest involving Sinopec.
The explosions ripped slabs of pavement and online photos showed bodies, overturned vehicles and shattered windows in nearby buildings. Black smoke rose above gigantic fuel silos and darkened much of the sky over a bay area. The pipeline, owned by Sinopec, ruptured and leaked for about 15 minutes onto a street and into the sea before it was shut off. Hours later, as workers cleaned up the spill, the oil caught fire and exploded in two locations, the city government said. Fu Chengyu, chairman of Sinopec, issued a public
apology Saturday morning, according to a company statement. He said that Sinopec will collaborate with a State Council investigation group. “We will investigate the incident with responsibility and give timely reports,” another Sinopec statement said. The Qingdao Environmental Protection Bureau said barriers had been set up to contain the oil as it spread into the sea, but that a mixture of gas and oil from a storm sewer exploded and caught fire over the sea. UNITED NATIONS, NOvEmbEr 23 (AP): Eradicating hunger in Africa by 2025 is achievable — if Africa’s leaders champion it and promote improved crop production and healthy eating, the head of the U.N. food and agriculture agency said Friday. Jose Graziano da Silva went even further in an interview with The Associated Press, saying the Food and Agriculture Organization believes that hunger can be eradicated around the globe “in a generation — in our lifetime” if there is a political commitment by world leaders to ensure that all their citizens get access to nutritious food. “We are not talking about sending a man to the moon or something that complicated,” he said. “We have the technology. We have the expertise. We have the things that we need to do it.” Graziano said the World Food Programme looked at how the 62 countries that have achieved the first U.N. Millennium Development Goal — reducing extreme poverty by half — did it before the target date of the end of 2015, and it found three key factors. First, he said, was “political will” and leadership, because improving food
security involves improvements not only in agriculture but in nutrition, health, water supplies and storage facilities, to name a few. “If the president doesn’t take the lead, or the prime minister ... it doesn’t work,” he said. Second, Graziano said, is improving agricultural performance and access to food. “According to FAO, we have more than enough food produced nowadays to avoid hunger,” he said. “People are hungry today because they don’t have access to food ... because they cannot pay for the food or they cannot produce it any more as we did in the past.” One problem is that one-third to one-half of the food produced today is lost or wasted for a variety of reasons including bad storage, poor transportation and cultural issues, including the move from traditional cuisine to fast food, he said. A lot of food that could be consumed is thrown out, often because of huge portions. Third, Graziano said, is improving the nutritional value of the food people eat. “We are seeing more and more malnutrition rise in developed countries ... because of the quality of what (people) are eating,” he said.
When children are listed by income, for example, “you see in families with the lowest income a proportion of obese and malnourished (youngsters) similar to the families that have high level income,” he said. Graziano said the FAO is promoting the best practices collected from around the world to eradicate hunger, especially in Africa, “where we have the worst situation at the moment.” He expressed hope that an African Union summit in January will set a target to eradicate hunger in Africa by 2025. “All countries in Africa can do it ... with the proper assistance FAO is giving them,” he said. For example, the FAO in early 2012 declared a famine in Somalia, but Graziano said “we have been able to pull Somalia out of famine in six months” with improvements in agriculture and livestock raising and a cash-for-work program aimed primarily at women because they provide food for the family. This program was based on the FAO’s experience in Brazil, Vietnam and other countries, he said. Graziano was in New York to launch the “International Year of Family Farming” in 2014.

Authorities said the oil had seeped into underground utility pipes, which could have been a factor in the blasts, but they did not elaborate. They assured the public that the explosions did not affect any petrochemical plant or military facilities in the seaside district and that air quality remained good after the disaster. About 18,000 residents have been evacuated in the wake of the blasts, and power was restored to all except two residential
neighborhoods, authorities said. Of the 136 people hospitalized, 10 remained in critical condition, the city government said. The Beijing News cited a resident surnamed Gao, who works in logistics, as saying he was driving past Qingdao’s Huangdao district when he felt the force of the blasts, and then realized the ground in front of him had fractured. The air was pungent, many cars on both sides of the road were overturned and there was dark smoke rising in the distance, he said. “It felt like an earth-
quake, and I was dumbstruck,” Gao said, adding that there was chaos on the street as people ran, panicking, in all directions. Authorities ruled out terrorism but the incident remained under investigation, it said. President Xi Jinping urged local officials to go all out in finding missing people, treating the injured and finding the cause of the accident, state TV broadcaster CCTV said. It was China’s second deadliest industrial accident this year, behind a chicken factory fire in June in Jilin that killed 121.
There are almost 500,000 family farms, mostly in Africa where 95 percent of farmers are small or subsistence farmers, many of whom don’t produce enough to eat, he said. Graziano said the FAO is promoting family farms because they are “the most efficient” when it comes to using land and water resources and because the agency wants to promote local production and local use of food, which avoids
increasingly high transportation costs. Graziano is also still promoting this year’s International Year of Quinoa — “the unique cereal that has all the proteins and amino acids that the human being needs” and requires 100 percent less water than any other cereal. That makes it perfect for dry areas, and it can be cultivated at any altitude. The FAO achieved its goal of introducing quinoa in the Sahel and the Horn of
Africa, where countries are testing different varieties, as well as in Yemen, he said. “It takes one or two years of testing and choosing the best one,” Graziano said, “but after that ... the wind helps a lot because it spreads the seeds all around — you don’t need to pay Monsanto for the seeds! So it will be really amazing to see the Sahel and many drought areas of the world cultivated with quinoa in the future, and we are working on that.”

Pacquiao fights for career, nation against Rios
MACAO, NOveMber 23 (AP): Manny Pacquiao will enter the ring against Brandon Rios on Sunday (Saturday night U.S. time) both as a boxer with his career on the line and a Philippines icon and congressman representing a nation stricken by disaster. Yet Pacquiao was a picture of serenity and confidence as he smiled and waved to a mostly Filipino crowd attending the weigh-in on Saturday at the The Venetian casino in Macau. The WBO international welterweight title is the official prize, but for Pacquiao this fight is about much more. Coming off two consecutive losses — the most recent a devastating knockout at the hands of JuanManuel Marquez almost a year ago — Pacquiao has been written off by many as a fading star, close to his 35th birthday, and whose days as the world's poundfor-pound champion are gone for good. It's been four years since he stopped an opponent, and favorable expert comparisons with Floyd Mayweather Jr. seem like distant memories. Long-time trainer Freddie Roach had upped the stakes by saying Pacquiao should retire if he does not perform up to expectations in Macao. If that pressure was not enough, Pacquiao must also deal with the turmoil back in the Philippines, which is still struggling with the impact of this month's typhoon which killed thousands and made hundreds of thousands homeless. Any ordinary fighter would struggle to prepare for a bout while his nation
David Beckham roots for 'inspirational' Pacquiao
MACAU, NOveMber 23 (AFP): Asian boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao will not only have the support of a Filipino-packed crowd when he fights Brandon Rios on Sunday, but also a phalanx of celebrity cheerleaders, led by David Beckham. The former England football captain will be joined at the Macau ringside by a number of celebrity guests for the fight, including Oscarwining actor and director George Clooney, Sands China CEO Ed Tracy confirmed. Reality TV star Paris Hilton and Daniel Wu and Eddie Peng will also be at ringside, while American rap superstar 50 Cent is also strongly rumoured to be flying in to see "Pac-Man's" comeback fight. Singing star Alicia Keys, who has been performing concerts at the Venetian Resort where the bout will take place, is also expected to attend. Beckham jetted in to the southern Chinese city on Friday and immediately declared himself to be a "huge fan" of eight-weight world champion Pacquiao. Beckham arrived to announce a commercial partnership with the Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao, left, and Brandon Rios of the United States pose for photos during the weigh-in for their welterweight resort's owners, Sands Las Vegas, but then let slip the real reason why fight at the Venetian Macao in Macau Saturday, Nov. 23. (AP Photo) dealt with such a tragedy, but Pacquiao is no ordinary fighter. He has transcended the sport to take on the status of national icon, and is officially a congressman in Sarangani province. When the typhoon hit, Pacquiao was already in training in General Santos city and it was hard for him to resist pleas to leave camp to help out and raise morale in the disaster zone. Convinced by Roach and other trusted advisors,
Pacquiao made the tough decision to stay in training camp with the aim of delivering a victory that would raise national morale. Reminders of the typhoon surrounded him at the weigh-in, with fans waving banners referencing the storm, and others shouting out in Tagalog for Pacquiao to "Do it for Tacloban!" - the city worst hit by the storm. "I'm doing my best to give a good fight and to win the fight, especially with what
happened to my countrymen and what happened to the Philippines with the typhoon," Pacquiao said. "To all the people and families affected by this storm, this fight is for you." Roach, who has publicly been supremely confident of victory and thereby doing his part to rebuild confidence in his fighter after the Marquez defeat, said the national disaster had genuinely stirred Pacquiao despite his outward calm.
"Winning the fight is going to do more for the country than anything in the world," Roach said. "His goal is to win the fight for them, for his people, and that's what makes Manny tick. "I hate to say the typhoon was a good thing, I don't want to say that, it was tragic. But Manny will fight for his people and that's what's going to motivate him to win this fight." Pacquiao will receive a reported $18 million for
NOIDA, NOveMber 23 (IANS): India's athletics icon Milkha Singh is glad that the doors have been opened for sportspersons to receive India's highest civilian award -- Bharat Ratna -- but would have been happier if hockey legend Dhyan Chand was the first recipient instead of Sachin Tendulkar. "I am very happy that the doors have opened for sportspersons. But I think the first Bharat Ratna should have been given to Dhyan Chand because of what he has achieved. I am not against Sachin getting the award but Dhyan Chand deserved it first," said Milkha, who is India's only male athlete to win a Commonwealth Games track and field event way back in 1958 in Cardiff. The government announced last week that batting great Tendulkar, who retired from all forms of cricket, will become the first sportsperson and the youngest to receive the award. Milkha, on the sidelines of an event at Genesis Global School, said Saturday that Dhyan Chand's exJulia Lipnitskaia, of Russia, performs her short program dur- ploits should not be forgoting the Cup of Russia ISU Grand Prix event in Moscow, Rus- ten even 34 years after his death. was part of the teams that won three Olympic golds in 1928, 1932 and 1936. "A sportsperson is a nation's ambassador when they go to participate in the Olympics, so they should also be given these awards. Dhyan Chand passed away long back but we should not forget what he has done for the country. You must understand that to get an Olympic medal is a huge achievement," added Milkha, who missed the 400m bronze in the 1960 Rome Olympics in a photo finish. Asked about India's chances in track and field events in the Asiad and the Commonwealth Games next year, the 'Flying Sikh' doesn't expect more than two medals. But he remains more concerned about the Olympics. "In track and field, no doubt, we will win a couple of medals next year but I am more concerned about Olympics. I don't see any athlete coming up in the next four years who can clinch a medal at the Olympics. The present coaches have not been able to produce results. With the system we have today, I don't see us winning a medal at the Games," said Milkha.
PHILADeLPHIA, NOveMber 23 (AP): Spencer Hawes had the hot hand and Philadelphia 76ers coach Brett Brown wasn't afraid to ride it. The 76ers' center hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds left in regulation and scored 11 of his 25 points in the final two minutes of regulation and overtime Friday night to lead Philadelphia to a 115107 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. The Sixers trailed 98-88 with 2:10 to play but forced the extra session with a 14-4 run that featured three 3-pointers from Hawes, the last one tying the game. Hawes ran to the sideline to catch an inbounds pass, turned, and while falling away from the basket, released his shot on one leg. "Coach drew it up in the huddle and it reminded me of the last time a coach drew up a 3 for me to tie a game," Hawes said. "I was in college. I thought (Brown) screwed something up." Evan Turner added 27 points in helping the 76ers snap a four-game skid. "I guess the basketball gods were looking out for us and Spencer played well all night," said Turner who threw Hawes the inbounds pass. Hawes and Turner accounted for 19 of the Sixers' final 22 points. Hawes added 12 rebounds
CHICAGO, NOveMber 23 (AP): Dennis Rodman is preparing to thrill North Korean fans during an exhibition basketball tour there late next month. Though he ducked questions in an interview with The Associated Press about whether his Christmas-time visit would be used for propaganda purposes by Kim Jong Un, the 29-year-old leader of one of the world's most repressive regimes, Rodman said he'll be accompanied on the trip by a dozen or so former NBA players. But he refused to name names. "I have seven people right now," Rodman said. "I talked to a couple of guys last week. Lot of guys are saying, 'OK, great. I'll go.
The Swedish Embassy is negotiating on behalf of Newman because the U.S. has no diplomatic ties to North Korea. Rodman's friendship with Kim has afforded him the kind of access denied statesmen from the West and even U.S. President Barack Obama. Rodman came under criticism for being "naive" during a previous visit to North Korea, where he was photographed often with Kim, and some members of the diplomatic community fear his antics could further aggravate already-sensitive negotiations. Rodman said his reasons for returning were much more personal and beyond that, Kim's motives were not his concern.
"Like I told you, this is not all about trying to create this major buzz," Rodman said. "Because I don't want my friend to sit there and say I been doing this all along to slip in some information on him. I don't want that. That's why I'm not doing that. We're friends and that's it. "This ain't about me trying to be a politician and try to get some scoop on him and stuff like that. ... He's my friend first. Other than that, I don't give a damn what ... he does." Rodman began his NBA career with the Detroit Pistons in 1986. It ended in 2000, after failed attempts to catch on with both the Lakers and Mavericks. Whether or not he misses the game, it's clear

this pay-per-view fight, five times the purse Rios will receive, with that disparity accurately reflecting the underdog status of the American, raised in Kansas and now fighting out of the gym of Robert Garcia in Oxnard, California. Rios too is coming off a defeat — the first of his professional career — in the rematch against Mike Alvarado but the former lightweight champion is still on the rise, aged 27, and with a height,
he had decided to travel to the the semi-autonomous Chinese region this weekend. "(Pacquiao) is obviously one of the reasons why I'm here and why I'm really excited," said the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star at a press conference. "I'm a huge fan of Manny's. I met him a couple of years ago in the Philippines, when I was on tour there with the LA Galaxy and also there with UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund). "He really is a truly inspirational person." Beckham also had a message for the people of the Philippines as they attempt to rebuild their towns and lives after the devastation wreaked by Super Typhoon Haiyan on November 8, which has left nearly 7,000 people dead or missing. "The eyes of the world have been on the Philippines the last couple of weeks," said Beckham. "This fight will mean so much to Manny because, for a slight moment, it's going to put a smile on the people's faces in the Philippines. "And we all send out love and our hopes to the people in that part of the world."
reach and likely punchingpower advantage over Pacquiao. "They think I'm no problem but I'm going to be a huge problem," Rios said. "Everyone thinks I'm a tune-up fight; I'm nobody's tune-up fight and nobody's punching bag. "In the past when Manny hurt you he would finish you and that could be wearing off a little bit. I'm here to test him, and I'm not going to let him forget that knockout against Mar-
quez." Timothy Bradley, whose highly contentious points decision over Pacquiao preceded the Marquez defeat, said the 'Pacman' would likely be more than Rios can handle. "I've been in the ring with this guy and what's special about him is that he throws combinations and every shot is a death blow," Bradley said. "Rios is a big puncher and I know he comes to fight but he's a tad too slow for Pacquiao."

for his ninth double-double in 14 games, and Turner was 8 for 12 from the field in the fourth quarter and overtime. "Spencer took us where we needed to go, and Evan took us home," Brown said. Caron Butler scored 38 points for Milwaukee, which lost its seventh straight. Butler fell two points shy of his career high on 13-of-22 shooting from the floor. He was 4 of 8 from beyond the arc. His 3-pointer from the right
corner with 27.8 left in the game looked as if it would end Milwaukee's skid, the franchise's longest since it lost eight in a row to close the 2007-2008 season. "Yeah, I thought the game was in our control," Butler said. "But we haven't developed a winning brand of basketball yet." Only two Bucks finished in double figures. Ersan Ilyasova scored 19 points and Gary Neal had 10. The Sixers also dominated on the glass,
outrebounding the Bucks 50-32 and outscoring them 52-28 on points in the paint and 13-4 on second-chance opportunities. Still, had Hawes not hit his improbable fall-away, the Bucks would have won. "That was a tough shot," Butler said. "Hawes faded away, shot off one leg maybe, but it shouldn't have come to that. We had a lot of chances and all we needed was stops and rebounds."
Rodman ready to bring his game back to NKorea We'll go.' But I'm not saying this to get people to go over there to prove a point — 'OK, great, let's go over there and make a difference.' "No-o-o-o-oo," he continued. "Let's go over there because this is a great opportunity for everyone to see a different culture. ... 'This country is so bad. This city is so bad.' OK, great, come see it and tell the world when you come back, 'Hey, it's not as bad as you think.' And that's why I'm taking NBA players over there, to show them, so they can come back and talk about it." Back in the news as a self-appointed ambassador and friend of Kim, Rodman returned Thursday to where he won the last three
of his five NBA championships playing alongside Michael Jordan. On a promotional tour to pitch a vodka brand, Rodman, 52, held court downtown amid camera flashes. Rodman said he wouldn't talk about his relationship with Kim or North Korean politics, including its widely condemned human-rights record and secretive nuclear weapons program. Though he eventually touched on those subjects, Rodman glossed over several related questions and largely ignored a challenge to his answer about whether North Korea was holding U.S. citizens as hostages, including 85-year-old Korean War veteran Merrill Newman.
he enjoys being back in the limelight, detractors and all. "People say, 'what do you do for a living?' I don't know. I just float around the world. Basically, I don't do anything. I do a lot of major things around the world. I do things that is very significant right now, and people are actually paying attention to Dennis Rodman now. "Back when I was doing my finagling in sports, they thought I was a joke. They thought I was a cartoon character or something like that. All of a sudden now, people are taking me seriously. You know, an ambassador all around the world," he added. "It's like ... I think things have come full circle."

Guetta gives song to UN campaign David
Guetta can’t wait for you to hear his new song “One Voice” for a couple of reasons. The song is at the heart of a new partnership with the United Nations, and the 46-year-old French producer and DJ hopes it will inspire fans to donate money for humanitarian relief around the world, simply by tweeting. It also shows a brand new side of his musical personality. “It’s a big turn for me,” Guetta said of the song that features singer Mikky Ekko. “I’ve never had songs that are like this kind of subject, so I’m really excited about this. It’s a big change lyrically, but also sonically. Just, you know, growing up, trying to do something bigger than myself. It’s a big stretch from ‘Sexy Bitch.’” Guetta will project a video for “One Voice” on the side of the U.N. building in New York on Friday night with the help of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, helping raise awareness for the “The World Needs More ... “ humanitarian aid campaign. Fans can trigger $1 donations by choosing a word to finish the sentence, “The world needs more ... ,” and tweeting #worldneedsmore# #yourword#. Guetta is backing the word love. Other sponsors chose words like inclusion, education, dreams and empowerment. Fans can also donate $1 by sending a text. Details are available at the campaign’s website where the video unveiling also can be watched via livestream Friday night. The campaign launched in August on World Humanitarian Day and was spurred by the devastation caused in the Philippines by Typhoon Hyian. The money also will go to “other parts of the world like Syria, and

everywhere people are suffering,” Guetta said. The producer spoke by phone last week from the U.N. building, where he was learning more about the United Nations’ humanitarian programs. He first met officials when he donated a song for another fundraiser. The more he learned, the more he wanted to help. “People don’t realize how much the U.N. is just giving food to people that are hungry and water to people who need water to survive, and just helping people in crisis everywhere in the world,” Guetta said. “I was saying like how much I was surprised. If you watch the news, you see more of the political aspect of it. Hopefully the people that are following me on social media can be touched by this.”

An Opinion haCh PATTON It’s magical, powerful and awesome. Nagas and their love for music are but a tapestry. It is inherent to both the old and the young. It is inexplicably intense. I still remember one fine morning the guitar maestro, Ren Merry telling his music students at Patkai Christian College about the Nagas love for music and its prospects. In his words. “I find that Nagas are incredibly talented in whatever they do. But as of now I can assure you that, if we are to complete with the rest of the world. Its’ through our music”. That was circa 1994. Almost 20 years down the line he has not been proven wrong. Naga musician have taken their passion for music all across the world and have made great impressions. Some mention can be made about the indomitable spirit of the Abiogenesis, Divine Connection, Alobo Naga, Neise Meruno, Nagaland Chamber Choir and the new teenage sensation the Polar Lights. Talk about Goa and Jamaica and you think of music and good times. So, Naga ‘musicos’. You have taken Nagaland to the world. Now, it is about time you bring the world to Nagaland and let them feel our love and passion for good music. Nagaland here we come. Tis the land of music and festivities.

Sturridge saves Liverpool in thriller India look to clinch
LIVerPooL, NoVeMber 23 (AP): Daniel Sturridge scored a late equalizer to salvage a 3-3 draw for Liverpool in a pulsating Merseyside derby against fierce rival Everton in the Premier League. Sturridge scored with a glancing header from Steven Gerrard's free kick just 10 minutes after coming off the bench to cap an action-packed game at Goodison Park. The result left secondplace Liverpool with 24 points from 12 games while Everton has 21. Romelu Lukaku had scored twice in the second half to give Everton a 3-2 lead. The Belgian forward thought he had given his team its first derby victory since October 2010 when he headed home in the 82nd minute, just 10 minutes after taking advantage of some confusion in the Liverpool box to slide the ball past goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. Luis Suarez had put the Reds in front with a free kick in the 19th minute after a thrilling start. Philippe Coutinho opened the scoring in the fifth minute before Kevin Mirallas equalized for Everton three minutes later. "That is the best experience I've ever had in club football. It's a pity we didn't win but hopefully we will next time," Lukaku said. Sturridge started on the bench while midfielder Joe Allen made his first league start since March. Everton made just one change from the goalless draw at Crystal Pace before the international break, with Ross Barkley replacing Leon Osman. Coutinho made the most of sloppy defending from Liverpool, finding himself unmarked at the far post from Steven Gerrard's corner to slot home his first goal of the season with a cool finish. But Coutinho's goal did not silence the home fans for long as Mirallas leveled moments later with a shot high into the net after Liverpool defenders failed to clear a free kick in the box

from Leighton Baines. Lukaku then went close after being released by Pienaar but the in-form Mignolet denied his effort. Everton was punished from another set piece, as Suarez put the Reds in the driving seat with a brilliant free kick bent around the Everton wall from 30 yards. It was Suarez's ninth league goal, a tally that makes him the joint top scorer with Sturridge. Mirallas was lucky to escape a straight
red car in the 33rd minute after an ugly foul on Suarez, with the Belgium forward stamping his studs on the striker's thigh. Suarez screamed in pain and lied on the pitch for several minutes but was able to return to the game. Everton's hopes of turning the match around were dealt a blow at the start of the second half when Baines was forced to limp off the field with a foot injury in the 50th minute, being
replaced by Gerard Deulofeu. The Spanish winger immediately threatened Mignolet but the Liverpool keeper proved decisive with a low save that kept the Reds in front. Allen then wasted a good chance after being set up by Suarez, who had opened up the defense just in front of goal before releasing the ball for his teammate. But Allen slotted the ball wide from 10 meters, prompting an an-
gry reaction from the Uruguay striker. Everton kept pressing, forcing Mignolet to more saves and finally managed to level the score through Lukaku, who slid the ball through past his fellow Belgium teammate. The powerfully-built Lukaku then headed the ball into the back of the net before Sturridge rescued a point for the Reds following another pinpointed free kick from Gerrard.
V I S A K H A PAT N A M , NoVeMber 23 (PTI): A dominant India would look to seal the one-day series by taking an unassailable 2-0 lead against a struggling West Indies, who are proving to be a complete mismatch to the World champions, as the two teams square off in the second match on Sunday. After a listless performance in the Test series, losing explosive opener Chris Gayle to an injury has added to the woes and worries of the Caribbean side, who now face a do-or-die situation to save the series. The West Indies were expected to do better in the short format but they have failed to put up a fight as their batsmen continue to struggle. The reversal of fortunes has eluded the visitors as India cantered to a six-wicket victory with 88 deliveries to spare to take a 1-0 lead in Kochi. The victory was soothing for the wounded Indian bowlers who were pulverised in the last ODI series against Australia as they could finally exert some pressure on the batting fraternity. Back after given a rest to heal his shoulder injury in the Test series, Ravindra Jadeja led the spin attack by taking three wickets to bowl the Windies out for a paltry 211. For a team that had chased down 350-plus totals thrice to win the ODI series against Australia not so long ago, it was a cakewalk as they cruised home by six wickets with 88 deliveries to spare. Indian trio of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan have been the force behind the batting as they have shown no target is safe. Man-of-the-Match Kohli struck 86 in the first ODI and in the process emulated Sir Viv Richards's feat of 5,000 runs from 114 innings as his 133run partnership with Rohit Sharma (72) set up the chase against the Windies.
After six years of obscurity, it is the talented Sharma who has been a revelation since he was promoted to open against England at Mohali in January this year. The figures say it all. In 26 matches as an opener, Sharma aggregates 1172 at 53.27, compared to his career total of 3121 (at
C M Y K
37.15), that is more than 37 per cent of the runs. Sharma relished the role to perfection in India's Champions Trophy victory in June, became the third ever batsman to post a double century before finally getting the Test cap after playing 108 ODIs. Match starts: 1.30pm .
