Breakthrough in taxi drivers’ murder Morung Express News Dimapur | August 24

Dimapur police have made a major breakthrough in the mystery surrounding the murder of two taxi drivers this year. On March 21, 2013, a taxi driver, identified as Masukuddin alias Saddam, was found shot dead in Medziphema, and the taxi missing. On May 18, another taxi driver was reported missing along with the vehicle. Investigation into the case had almost reached a dead end until the chance recovery of a stolen car emerged, five months into investigation. SDPO, Dimapur, Relo T.

Aye briefing the media on the breakthrough said that on August 14, Government Railway Police Station personnel recovered a stolen car from the railway parking lot. It emerged that this was the same car which used to be driven by the deceased Masukuddin before being murdered. This lead led to the arrest of a 24 yearold man, who admitted to committing the crime. The accused, identified as Kaikholen Sitlou alias Akila, son of Chungminthang, from Sirhima village, was arrested on August 18 from Paipijang village. Sitlou admitted his involvement in the abduction

and killing of Masukuddin and also in the other case, which was reported on May 18, the SDPO said. He led police to the spot where he, along with two unidentified accomplices, had killed the driver of the taxi, which was reported missing on May 18. The remains of the missing driver, identified as Md. Fakruddin, were recovered on August 19. He is reported to have been shot. According to Sitlou’s confessional statement, his two accomplices carried out the abductions and murders. On both occasions, they hired the taxis with the intention of stealing the cars. The cars were sold for

Rs. 80, 000 each. The first car was sold in Dimapur while the second one was taken to Manipur. Police are in the process of tracking the second car. Sitlou told interrogators that he and his accomplices are cadres of the GPRN/ NSCN. The whereabouts of the two accomplices are unknown. Police are also not ruling out the possible involvement of the same group in connection with the death of two autorickshaw drivers, whose bodies were recovered from Medziphema in late 2012. Sitlou however denied involvement in those two cases, the SDPO added.

New Delhi, August 24 (Pti): Advising media to exercise caution, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said the spirit of inquiry must not morph into a “campaign of calumny” and “witch-hunt” is no substitute for investigative journalism. Sharing the dais with Singh at the inauguration of Rs. 60 crore National Media Centre in New Delhi, Congress President Sonia Gandhi also said, “At times the language and dignity of media discussion can be found wanting. Sometimes I, too, have to confess that the media makes the political establishment uncomfortable.” Maintaining that the media is not merely a mirror of business activity, Singh said it is a reflection of the entire society. While reflecting the process of great societal changes brought out by the economic reform and liberalisation, the media has also been affected by these changes, he said. “Change inevitably brings challenge in its wake. Those of you, who are the practitioners of media industry have a special responsibility to assess, tackle and overcome the challenges that two decades of socio-economic changes have brought about,” the Prime Minister said. He said in a vibrant democracy like

India, which revels in free enquiry and quest for answers, this is a significant calling. “But there is need for caution while executing this responsibility. A spirit of inquiry must not morph into a campaign of calumny. A witch-hunt is no substitute for investigative journalism. And personal prejudices must not replace the public good,” Singh said. The Prime Minister said that at the end of the day, “credibility is the media’s currency” and is integral to its contract with the reader or viewer. “There is also the question of a certain responsibility for social harmony and public order. I emphasise this particularly in the light of the social media revolution, which is rendering irrelevant the lines between a connected citizen and professional journalist. “A mature and wise handling of this phenomenon is essential if we are to avoid the tragedy last year that befell many innocent souls who became victims of an online propaganda campaign and were then driven across the country to save their lives in their home states,” Singh said. While noting that journalism cannot be divorced from the business of which it is a part, the Prime Minister said that the responsibility of the media organ-

isations is not limited to the viewers and readers alone as the companies also have an obligation to their investors and shareholders. “The tussle between bottom-lines and headlines is a fact of life for them,” he said but at the same time added “this should not result in a situation where media organisations lose sight of their primary directive, which is to hold up a mirror to society and help provide a corrective.” Sonia Gandhi said that the media has a tremendous, almost larger than life impact on our lives and “this imposes great responsibility”. Both Singh and Gandhi also lauded the media’s watchdog role. The Prime Minister also reiterated UPA’s commitment to “fostering a free, pluralistic and independent media”. Gandhi said, “We welcome the watchdog role of the media and well founded and well intentioned criticism of our policies and programmes. We recognise that there could be shortcomings that need to be highlighted.” “Our media has evolved over the years into a vibrant and mature institution that cherishes its freedom and independence and exercises it with a sense of commendable responsibility at least most of the time,” she said.

Rengma Nagas reach out to Ahoms the nPsc test Begins Morung Express News Dimapur | August 24

In order to strengthen the demand for a Rengma Hills Autonomous District Council (RHADC), the Rengma people have reached out to the Ahom people for support. The Rengma Naga Peoples’ Council invited some members of the Ahom Royal Society (ARS) to Dimapur today to reiterate this demand. “The Rengma Nagas are indigenous people, schedule tribe and sons of the soil, living in peaceful coexistence with Ahoms, Assamese including Karbis from time immemorial,” said A.J. Rengma, President of the Rengma Hills Autonomous District Demanding Committee (RHADDC) at the meeting held at Bookmarc conference hall here today. “We are not immigrants but we are a minor-

ity; we have all rights but we are suppressed,” asserted A.J. Rengma in the backdrop of the current violence that affected some people of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council in Assam. According to A.J. Rengma, since majority rules in a democracy, it is essential for the minority Rengma people of Assam to ally with the majority. The visiting Ahoms were asked, in this regard, to treat the Rengma people as their “brothers and sisters” to “deliver us from our present situation.” The Rengma people in Assam have marginal political representation, and the region remains largely without any sign of development.

Stating that the sixth schedule of the Constitution of India provides for creation of more autonomous regions, the request was put forward for the creation of the RHADC immediately “in the interest of all sections of the community who are living in the said territory,” said A.J. Rengma. “Resource sharing and control remains a problem among the indigenous communities of Assam—much is controlled by Multi National Companies,” maintained C. Gogoi of the ARS at the meeting. “Therefore people continue to fight amongst themselves.” The ARS had earlier submitted a memorandum to the Chief Min-

ister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, to consider having a representative each from all ethnic groups in Assam to its Legislative Council (Upper House). The support they are lending to the Rengma people, in essence, is out of their “concern for the indigenous people who were part of medieval Assam,” and because “we understand the Rengma position.” The ARS is based out of Sibsagar and Jorhat in Assam, and was represented by Kamala Rajkunwar, C. Gogoi, Bipin Handique and Dr. J. Hazarika today. The Rengma Student’s Union, Rengma Naga Hoho Dimapur, Rengma Hoho, RHADDC office bearers, Rengma region GBs, Village Council Chairman Forum of Rengmas and Rengma public leaders were present at the initial stage meet.

'Reports of Chinese troops' presence in Arunachal baseless' ItANAgAR, August 24 (ANI): Without denying that there has been an occasional transgression of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) by Chinese Army personnel for want of an accurate delineation of the Sino-Indian border, a top ranking security officer has rubbished media's claim about the presence of Chinese forces on India soil till date. "It is a fact that about a 50-member People's Liberation Army (PLA) patrol team, along with porters on August 11 last, had a faceoff with the Indian Army patrol team at Plam-Plam

after crossing the Hadigra pass, about 25 km within Indian territory but about 50 km from Chaglagam in Anjaw district." "They stayed overnight and retreated the next day," the officer who was present at Chaglagam during the period told the Arunachal Front. "Another Army patrol later undertook eight days' march up to Hadigra and had informed that the PLA jawans had gone," the officer disclosed on condition of anonymity. Thus, the claims that the transgression was up to 60 km within Indian territory

Ukhrul ADC against barter of Choro village IMPHAL, August 24 (NNN): Autonomous District Council (ADC), Ukhrul has insisted in a memorandum to the Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Saturday that the border village of Choro in Ukhrul district of Manipur should not be ceded to Myanmar to barter land between the neighbouring country and India. The memorandum says, “ADC members and the public of Ukhrul in the interest of the people of the state oppose the process for inclusion of Choro in the land exchange process between the two countries.” Both Manipur and central government purportedly intend to give away Choro village to Myanmar for the purpose of the current Indo-Myanmar Border Fencing. The representation alleges that both Manipur and Central government are taking steps to cede Choro village in exchange of Myanmar’s land at Manipur’s Moreh in Chandel district. It says Choro is a hill village that pays house tax and it is inhabited by Manipuris who have been safeguarding the boundary since time immemorial. Border village of Choro was wisely saved from losing to Myanmar (Burma) when the Kabaw Valley of Manipur was given to the neighbouring country, says the memorandum.

Assam girl sold twice, raped four times

CHANDIgARH, August 24 (tNN): A 19-year-old woman from Assam was sold twice and raped by four after she was brought to Bhiwani district on the pretext of marriage. The Haryana police on Thursday night arrested four accused, including a middleman, while one accused, Saneep, is absconding. A local court on Friday sent middleman Madan, a resident of Badheri village in Bhiwani, to police remand while three other accused -- Sandeep, Bijender and Sanjay -- were sent in judicial custody, said deputy superintendent of police, Loharu, Ramesh Kumar. The incident was reported after the victim escaped her captor and fled to Delhi on August 18. In the train, she to the national capital from Bhiwani, she met a social activist who helped her lodge a complaint with Delhi police, who forwarded it to Haryana police. An FIR has been lodged at Bahal police station of Bhiwani district. The woman, who belongs to a village in Udalguri district of Assam, has studied up to class 9. She told cops police that a resident of her village had introduced her to Madan in March. Madan promised to arrange her marriage and education and she reached Badheri along with her parents. Soon after, she was married to Sandeep. "The woman alleged that Sandeep had claimed to have bought her for Rs 60,000 from Madan for a month," said sources. After some days, Madan allegedly sold her to Bijender, a resident of Chaina Badadhu in Bhiwani district for Rs 1 lakh and the marriage was conducted in a temple. According to the woman, both Sandeep and Bijender raped her several times. She told police that around 20-25 days back, Bijender sent her to his brother-in-law Satyawan, who raped her. Over 300 diseased pigs culled

AIZAWL, August 24 (tNN): At least 243 pigs that were identified to have been affected with the dreaded Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) have been culled in Mizoram'sAizawl district in the last one month, an official of the state animal husbandry and veterinary department said. Animal husbandry and veterinary director L B Sailo said pig-owners voluntarily culled the affected animals after veterinary doctors warned them that the disease might spread. Sailo said another 58 pigs were culled in a government-owned farm at the Selesih village near Aizawl after they were found to be infected with PRRS. The affected animals included those that had been distributed by the state government to beneficiaries under the New Land Use Policy (NLUP) "At least 100 pigs reared under the NLUP were reported to have been affected and culled," the official said. The government may provide further assistance to the beneficiaries.

and they stayed for three to five days were totally baseless, he pointed out. In such a face-off, both sides display bilingual banners inscribed with "Claim over the territory... We are friendly nation... Go back". "About 1,080 km Sino-India border along Arunachal Pradesh is tough hilly terrain without any demarcation and either thinly or completely uninhabited. The forces patrol along the imaginary international border as border pillars get covered under thick shrubs leaving no sign of demarcation that makes it humanly impossible to know the ac-

tual LAC," he said. The special representative-level dialogue was initially scheduled for November 28-29, 2012 but had to be postponed after India and China disagreed over Dalai Lama's participation in the Global Buddhist Congregation in Delhi on those very dates. This was the 15th round of boundary negotiations (which began in 2003) but remained inconclusive. However, there were reports that over 500 Chinese intrusions had taken place in the last two years along the Sino-Indian boundary. In fact, allega-

tions of contravention by Chinese troops were common in 2009 and 2010. In 2005, the two sides agreed on political parameters and guiding principles for a boundary settlement, which would form the basis of the final settlement. Observers say the Chinese game plan was to put pressure on India to reassert claims over territory. At the centre of the SinoIndian boundary dispute is the McMahon Line which the Chinese refuse to recognise. While China claims over 90,000 sq km of territory (Arunachal Pradesh), the Indian claim extends

Even after the British came, they were administered by the political department of the British Crown. The Manipur Raja and his darbar administered only the valley area till August 15, 1947. Thereafter, when the power was transferred to the Maharaja of Manipur without the consent of the hill people, the NNL stated the Nagas of Mani-

talks on the border row. A Tezu report adds that according to sources, the residents of Chaglagam sporadically come across the words 'Chinese occupied land' written on rocks and trees inside Indian territory. "A stretch of porous land of 108 km from Chaglagam (which is the last circle of Anjaw district) up to Hadigarh Pass has no defence setup. The India Army is deployed at Chaglagam only as there is no road up to the border," a Chalagam villager said. "How can the Army guard the border by stay-

ing at Chaglagam when the actual border is 108 km away?" he asked. Villages like Thenya, Plam-Plam and Najong were abandoned due to threat posed from across the border. However, Karatafla and Asiliang have a few habitations. Lack of infrastructure at the border and zero deployment of Army at Hadigarh Pass are the main causes of PLA intrusion, villagers claimed. Unless the Army is properly deployed and the infrastructure at the border developed, PLA intrusions would continue unabated, they added.

ministration (GTA) meeting Sep 4 - where an interim chief executive is likely to be elected in place of Gurung, who resigned from the post in July. Addressing a rally in Darjeeling town, GJM town committee's assistant general secretary Raju Pradhan said the outfit wanted the GTA dissolved. The GJM had called for the Ghar Bahira Janata agitation after its assistant general secretary Benoy Tamang was arrested Thursday in connection with the some old cases. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is slated to visit Darjeeling Sep 10-12 following an invitation from the Lepcha development board. This would be her first tour to the hills after the recent flare up that has seen a series of shutdowns and other forms of protest disrupting normal life. In Kolkata, the state government said it will provide essential commodities like rice and flour at a subsidised rate through 30 outlets in the three hill subdivisions starting Monday. Food camps will be set

up in police stations across the subdivisions where a kilo of flour and 1.6 kilos of rice will be sold at Rs.7 each per individual, said Food and Supplies Minister Jyotipriyo Mallick. "Beginning Monday, 11 outlets will become functional and by Wednesday, we will operate a total of 30 such camps. Block development officers, food department officials and if necessary district administration officials will also be present," Mallick said at the state secretariat. Trouble started afresh in the hills after the GJM intensified the Gorkhaland movement following the United Progressive Alliance's (UPA) green light to a separate Telangana. Two GJM activists have attempted self-immolation and one of them succumbed. The state government has ruled out any division of the state. The Gorkhaland movement has left many dead over the past two-andhalf decades, besides affecting the region's economy, based on tea, timber and tourism.

Gogoi goes Modi way GJM accuses central troopers of excesses to fight unemployment "Paramilitary

guWAHAtI, August 24 (tNN): Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi may be Congress's bete noire, but there is one Congress CM who does not mind adopting Modi's style of governance. Assam CM Tarun Gogoi, who is fighting a string of problems like militancy, infiltration from Bangladesh, floods and ethnic unrest in the state, wants to address the issue of unemployment at any cost, even if it requires borrowing ideas from his Gujarat counterpart. According to the live registers at employment exchanges in the state, the total number of registered unemployed youths was 11,02,857 in 2000, which rose to 13,51,511 in 2008 and 13,53, 481 in 2010. The number could be even higher if those unemployed, who are yet to register themselves with employment exchanges, are taken into account. While reviewing the progress of employment eneration Mission (EGM) at a meeting here on Friday, Gogoi asked the officials to stretch the function

of employment exchanges beyond that of registration of unemployed to 'centres of employment' - a model successfully implemented by the Gujarat government. The chief minister has asked officials to set up 52 employment exchanges in the state and for that they should study the Gujarat, as well as Karnataka model, where the exchanges function as "vibrant employability centres," the chief minister's office said. "The unemployment problem has to be tackled on a mission mode by creating employment opportunities and making our youth employable in a variety of skills and vocations," he said at the meeting. Gogoi added, "An action plan to generate more employment opportunities has to be taken up." Gujarat has 41 employment exchanges across the state, including eight university employment information and guidance bureaus, for those job-seekers with higher educational qualification. The state also has two exchanges exclusively for women.

DARjeeLINg, August 24 (IANs): The GJM Saturday accused the central paramilitary troopers of committing "excesses", even as normal life remained paralysed in northern West Bengal's Darjeeling hills following an indefinite protest called to press for release of arrested party activists. Shops, markets, banks, post offices, educational institutions and central and state government offices remained closed, and vehicles kept off the roads in the three hill sub-divisions of Darjeeling district - Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong - on day four of the 'Ghar Bahira Janta (people in the streets)' movement launched by the Gorkha

Janmukti Morcha (GJM), officials said. With 724 of its leaders and workers taken into custody in recent weeks after the state government cracked down on the renewed movement for formation of a state of Gorkhaland, the GJM attacked the central troopers. "The paramilitary forces in the hills are using excessive force to enter people's house during raids and also randomly searching every part of the house. "Some people have also complained that many things have been found missing after these raids," GJM president Bimal Gurung said in a Facebook post. "The GJM strongly condemns these atrocities by Paramilitary forces in the hills," he said. GJM activists clashed with the police in Mirk of Kurseong sub-division. There were no reports of any fresh arrests Saturday. The party announced it would stay away from the hill development body, Gorkhaland Territorial Ad-

DIMAPuR/IMPHAL, August 24 (NNN): Following Government of India’s assurance that talks on Bodoland issue will be held on September 4, leaders of Bodoland and Kuki State Demand Committee (KSDC), who were on indefinite hunger strike since August 22 in Assam's Kokrajhar, suspended their agitation today. This information was disclosed to Newmai News Network by the KSDC leaders this evening. The Kuki and the Bodo leaders had engaged in the joint agitation at Kokrajhar demanding a Kuki state in Manipur and Bodoland in Assam. According to KSDC leaders, the Bodo leaders have assured to be with the movement taken up by the KSDC no matter what. Meanwhile, KSDC information secretary George

Guite said, "After the occupation of southern Kuki country in the 1890s, the erstwhile imaginary line between Tipaimukh and Numsaeelung River which had become the bone of contention between the Kukis and Manipur state was immediately connected by a clearly demarcated line of boundary by Manipur Chin Boundary Commissions in 1893-94." George Guite was presenting a paper themed, "History of the kuki homeland movement and ideology and strategies of kuki State movement,” during a one-day consultative meeting held today in Churachandpur at KIC Complex, on the current political scenario of the Kukis in Manipur. In his lengthy paper, the KSDC leader said while parts of their traditional land, Chin

Hills and Lushai Hills, had been directly administered by the colonial power rendering them to excel in all spheres of developmental indexes, the case of their territory now included into Manipur state never enjoy such privileges. House tax was imposed upon the hill tribes at the rate of Rs. 3/- and from 1911 all the Kuki villages that did not have more than ten houses were forced to pay double, i.e, Rs.6/- per house. The hills in general were just considered to be an additional source of revenue to Manipur state without giving anything back to them, the paper said. For instance, he said, in 1919, J.B. Webster lamented in his report that Manipuri state annually collected Rs.70,000 as house-tax from the hill tribes, but its

expenditure on hill development ranged between Rs. 17,000 and 19,000 only. He also complained there was no sign of any state authority in the hills. Hill lambus were annually sent to collect house tax, there was no school except one Missionary school at Ukhrul, and so on, George Guite stated. The paper then said that except Imphal-Dimapur road there was virtually no road in the hills till this time. "But all the transportation activities and other manual works of the state were forced to be carried out by the hill tribes,” he continued. “The hillmen have been just used as human porters of the state: every Hillman is bound to make two journeys per annum to Cachar and bring up loads on the Maharajah’s account.”

AIZAWL, August 24 (IANs): The northeastern state of Mizoram is probably the only one in India where women voters outnumber men, an official said here Saturday. The election department of Mizoram, which goes to the assembly polls this year end, had published the final electoral rolls last week after completion of the spe-

cial summary revision of the voters. "According to the final electoral rolls, Mizoram has a total of 686,305 voters. Of them 349,506 are females and 336,799 males," Joint Chief electoral officer H. Lalengmawia told reporters. The official said compared to the last summary revision in January, there is an increase of 6,050 voters. With a total popula-

tion of 1,091,014 (552,339 males), Christian-dominated Mizoram has 40 assembly seats. During the last assembly election in December 2008, Mizoram had a total electorate of 611,124 with 308,884 women and 302,240 men. Congress won 32 seats, Mizo National Front three and Maraland Democratic Front one.

pur will not remain with the Meiteis, “since the latter had never conquered the Nagas.” NNL declared that it would be impossible for the Nagas to preserve the best of their culture, tradition, customary laws and political practices should the Naga people and their land be split up and placed under different influence and politics, the UNC statement said. Further, the NNL expressed their desire to merge with the Naga Hills District of Assam through the boycott of the preparation of electoral rolls in Naga areas. The first general election under the Ma-

nipur State Constitution Act 1947 was held in June 1948. The Nagas in Manipur boycotted the election. They thereafter, launched the "No tax campaign" when Maharaj Kumar Priyobrata Singh was the Chief Minister of Manipur. The Campaign was spearheaded by A. Daiho (Mao) and N. Modoli (Poumai), President and Secretary respectively of the NNL. The Nagas in Manipur refused to pay the annual House Tax to the Government of Manipur and instead submitted their annual house tax to Charles Pawsey, D.C. of Naga Hills of Assam in Kohima, it added. The statement noted that it

was an act of defiance against the Authority of the State, under which “the Nagas of Manipur had been placed without their consent.” It was also a means of putting pressure on the Indian Government for securing the merger of the Nagas in Manipur with the Naga Hills district, it said. Subsequently, Manipur Maharaja Budh Chandra sent a combined force of Assam Rifles and Manipur Police to arrest A. Daiho and other leaders on August 27, 1948, which became “a landmark in the history of political movement of the Nagas in Manipur,” the note stated.

Martyrs’ Day attend 65 years this August 27 seNAPAtI, August 24 (MexN): The observation of the 65th Anniversary of Martyrs’ Day will be organized by Mao Council under the aegis of the United Naga Council (UNC) at Mao Gate on August 27 at 11 am. Matryrs’ Day was perpetuated by Mao Students’ Union, following an attack in and around Mao Inspection Bungalow on August 27, 1948 by Assam Rifles and Manipur Police, where several volunteers and students of then Mao- Maram Tribal Council were injured and killed. According to a statement issued by UNC, in September 1946, the Naga National

NSCN-K responds to news article

ly reconciled by sending its delegates led by Y. Wangtin Naga. The issue was, the NSCN finance department have demanded subscribe taxes from Horticulture department. Mrs Manen, wife of TN Manen, then Commissioner Nagaland, Secretary Horticulture department, reportedly paid Rs.15 lac (fifteen lacs). However, the next day Hukato came to Mrs. Manen’s Office (Horticulture deptt.) and forced to pay another Rs.35 lac (thirty five lacs). These illegal demands of extra money led to negligible quarreling between Mrs. Manen Secretary and Mr. Hukato which lasted for few minutes ended up with Hukato spitting on Mrs. Manen’s face. What kind of character Hukato has been displayed. Secondly, after June 7th 2011 NSCN split, Hukato who have signed expulsion minutes of S.S. Khaplang came back to NSCN and tendered his unqualified apology have been accepted in NSCN fold. However one month of his joining the NSCN, Hukato forced Mohon Singh’s company to pay Rs.3 crores against bridge construction work between Pongo and Jakphang village (Longleng road). On Hukato’s threat, M/S. Mohon Singh company paid Rs.1,14,00,000(One crore fourteen lakhs). Hukato used forged signature and unofficial designation as, C.O.NSCN. There was misunderstanding between M/S Mohon Singh’s company and NSCN for quite some time. Ultimately, M/S. Mohon Singh clearly identified Hukato. The matter have been debated and brought to the notice of the Chairman S.S. Khaplang who unconditionally forgave Hukato. In fact, S.S. khaplang Chairman might be concerned for Hukato’s defection if seriously dealt with his case. Thirdly, first part of 2012, Hukato kidnapped General Manager Kaitry company-Road Construction Company, (dealing with the road construction between Changtongya to Mon via Longleng) for ransom amount of Rs.1 crore without the knowledge of NSCN authority. The NSCN authority came to know about such devilish act of Hukato only after receiving Rs.1 crore and released the kidnapped Manager. This act of Hukato forced Kaitry Company to withdraw more than 60 (sixty) Bulldozers and JCB and ran away leaving the entire work incomplete. Today, one time good road feasible even for Maruti car and Van becomes foothpath, where even four wheelers cannot ply. This crime was committed when he did not hold any portfolios. There are so many such activities of Hukato, however, the NSCN will not accuse or glorify anyone because a man is known by his action. Hence, the NSCN has no problem for defection of criminal man from its fold. Whatever losses might be caused in terms of arms and cash money, it is not a problem for NSCN because, the liabilities of the NSCN becomes the problems of the faction where they joined. However, they have committed a great suicide where they will have no future yet, they have to pay back to NSCN for what they have taken away at any cost.

This NSCN-K is compelled to publish this statement against the defectors who leveled wild allegation on his Excellency S.S. Khaplang. The defectors attempted to accuse and malign His Excellency President S.S.Khaplang, who is fatherly figure of Naga National Movement. The young and immature, inconsistent, self style worker like Hukato alleged, S.S. Khaplang Chairman NSCN of accepting package from Myanmar authority should come out with authentic proof as to what amount of package have accepted from Myanmar authority. How come yesterday born boy is challenging the living Naga National leader who sacrificed everything for the Naga cause. The State of Nagaland came into being on signing 16th points agreement since 1963, but Eastern Nagaland under the unshakable leadership of S.S. Khaplang refused to accept Statehood from Myanmar Government till date. Then what about Nagaland State that came out at the cost of Naga National Movement? Was it not package accepted by the Nags of Indian side? You yesterday born boy has no right to challenge the position of S.S. Khaplang, the real one and only clean leader. Is it not S.S. Khaplang who gave freehand to carry out your selfish mission of extortion, Kidnapping? Did S.S. Khaplang initiate action on you? How can you call the great Naga leader Myanmarese? He is real and only living Naga leader who has never accept anything from anybody. God knows, S.S. Khaplang live in a thatch house in Teka. What you are today is only because of S.S. Khaplang’s generosity and kindness. The NSCN has no problem on Hukato defection rather the NSCN workers felt relief in his absence. On their defection, they reduced their liberty and credibility, because they cannot and will not enjoy as they did in NSCN after joining Khehoi. They may feel that, they have done something great, yet Khehoi is GOI fishery pond which will exist as long as they serve GOI’s interest. How can they claim to be freedom fighters while it exists under GOI mercy? In fact, they are Indian dogs trained mainly against Naga National freedom fighters. It is for the consumption of the Naga as to whether Hukato’s claim for Kilo Kilonser’s post in NSCN is feasible? To be Kilo Kilonser, one must be sincere, punctual and capable, even the seniority is counted. However, in the case of Hukato, it may not be so appropriate to lead the council of Kilonsers, as Kilo Kilonser. Therefore, NSCN did not accept his plea. Defectors also blamed S.S. Khaplang on Naga Reconciliation for his critical. However, the Chairman NSCN only emphasized on real reconciliation basing on historical and political rights of the Nagas. He condemned some faction for using reconciliation as a tool to MiP NScN/GPrN attack other Naga groups. It is said, ‘a man is book of life and everybody read it’. One must know what he is before somebody. Similarly, the NSCN appreciate and are grateful to good workers, while condemning criminal workers. Hence the NSCN is compelled to bring out few of Hukato’s records when in NSCN. The Changpang village council and generIn the year 2007, Hukato brought unforgettable humiliation for NSCN, which ultimate- al public regretted to ascertain that the prime

accused of triple murder case of Bor-Lengri, Karbi Anglong, Assam Wobenhung Humtsoe S/o.Tsalamo Humtsoe resident of Humtso village under Wokha district was bailed out from Diphu jail within a short period without justifying the ground reality of human rights. The council and general public urge upon the law enforcing agencies and concern officials to revoke the bail and arrested the accuse/culprit for proper trail and punishment in the interest and welfare of justice o set an example for eye opening to other offenders to avoid such kinds in future. It is further stated that if any kind of unwanted incident occurred/caused to the said accused/culprit, if any law enforcing agencies fail to arrest and put him behind bar and in such case the responsibilities will have to borne by the law enforcing agencies. It was learnt that the accused Wobenthung Humtsoe s/o Tsalamo Humtsoe of Humtso Village was the main architect of the whole episode of the murder who had also confessed that he master-minded and used his boys to commit the crime and having such strong evidences about his involvement. The Hoho/Ekhung question the law-enforcing agencies and the concern officials that why he was granted bail without proper trial form Diphu court? Where is the law? Where is the justice? The Hoho/Ekhung demand to revoke the bail granted and re-arrest the main accused Wobenthung Humtsoe and arrest the two accompliance who are still absconding. The Hoho/Ekhung further warned the law-enforcing and the concerned officials that it shall held responsible of nay eventualities in the failure to re-arrest the said accused and two accompliance who are still absconding. Dear Mr.S.A.Chishi, Your letter to Thomas dated Aug. 24 2013 was not addressed to me but since you have written it for the information of all Nagas, al-

low we to ask you some questions on behalf of Thomas and Nagas. 1. Where were you, when from 1946, Phizo started touring all Naga villages as well as the whole North East region in order to mobilize all the people to stand for their own political rights when the British leave their South Asian Empire? Were you accompanying him when he went to the Manipries, Mizos, Assamese and Khasis during that period? 2. Where were you, when, after encountering Nerhu and the Congress leadership over Naga independence for several times, Phizo finally hoisted the Naga national Flag on 14th August after meeting with Mahatma Gandhi? Were you around when Phizo drafted the telegram announcing the Naga declaration of Independence to the U.N. on that same day? 3. Were you around (or had your parents even known one another) when Phizo was imprisoned in 1948 in Calcutta for his Naga national activities? 4. Were you also a participant, when Phizo conducted the Naga National Plebiscite on 16th May 1951? Were you, or any of the former Presidents of the NNC whom you have mentioned, anywhere with Phizo when he established the Hongkhin Government in the free Naga territories of the then Tuensang region in 1954? Did any one of you assist in drafting the first six paged letter and report of Indian army atrocities to the then Secretary General of the UN on Nov. 30, 1954? 5. Were you there, when, after establishing the Naga Supreme Court on July 4, 1954, the Federal Government of Nagaland was established on 22nd March 1956 along with your Sema leaders like Scato Swu, Kugatos and Kaitos? 6. Were you already a soldier When General Lakham along with his Yimchunger warriors attacked the Indian Army outpost at Huker on March 24, 1955? Or were you there when the Safe Guards attacked the Indian army post at Tsiedugei near Chiechama on March 24, 1956? If you were not in any of these events that were spearheaded by Phizo, then I think you have no right to question Phizo’s status as the father of the nation. This title by the way was not given by the Khonoma people or the Angami tribe, but by the whole Naga people in recognition of Phizo’s contribution and sacrifices for the Naga nation. Here nobody can re-write Naga history according to his or her own whims and opinion. We of course can have some “Uncles” and “Aunties” of the Naga nation, but I do not think anyone can replace Phizo as the father of the nation. As for the Shillong Accord, the NNC had nothing to do with it as all the signatories were FGN and Naga army representatives. Also, as already mentioned several times in my writings, Phizo was not silent on the Shillong Accord. He simply did not give recognition to the Shillong Accord. Even the FGN through its President, late Zashei Huire discarded the Shillong Accord. If however some Nagas still think that some Nagas have accepted the Shillong Accord, then they are believing in a none-existing enemy of the Naga people.

Keyboard to get rid of Facebook addiction WASHINGTON, AuGuST 24 (ANI): Two doctoral candidates from MIT have created a new keyboard device that is capable of shocking users overindulging online. Robert R. Morris and Dan McDuff calculated that they were wasting about 50 hours a week on Facebook so to stop that from happening again they turned to Pavlovian method, Discovery News reported. McDuff said that the keyboard is able to monitors application usage and if it senses that too much time is being spent on a particular website or application it give a shock to its users, asserting that the shock is just unpleasand and not dangerous. The system that they have devised uses a Mac’s UI Inspector for monitoring application usage and a processing code, which routes on-screen alert signals to an Arduino board that activates a relay and initiates a shock circuit. That current is then passed on to conductive metal strips that is embedded in a keyboard rest pad

Rolls-Royce launches ‘Wraith’ in Maharashtra

MuMbAI, AuGuST 24 (PTI): Ultraluxury British carmaker Rolls-Royce on Friday rolled out its new model ‘Wraith’, priced at Rs 4.60 crore, in Maharashtra, and said it will expand its dealerships from three to five by year-end. The four-seater coupe is powered by a twin-turbo V12 engine coupled with a eight-speed automatic ZF transmission. The engine is powerful enough to generate 624 brake horse power. “India remains one of the most important markets for us in Asia. Wraith is drawing interest from the new customers who have not considered a Rolls-Royce before. We are more than optimistic for India,” Rolls Royce, General Manager for Emerging Markets-Asia, Herfried Hasenoehrl said at the launch. Stating that the iconic British auto firm has seen some challenges, Hasenoehrl said Wraith will be a key to Rolls- Royce success in the Indian market. Asked about the impact of the rupee decline and weak consumer sentiments on sales, he said the prevalent economic conditions did not have any impact on its sales performance as it caters to a “niche” market. “We are cautiously optimistic about this year.” He said the company has sold 250 cars in India since it re-entered in 2005 after a five-decade break, but did not give yearwise break up or growth figures. The British auto firm currently has outlets in Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad and wants to add two more.

51 Noksen bye-election campaign: NPCC accuse NPF of cheap rhetoric and gimmicks Dimapur, august 24 (mExN): In the backdrop of the 51 Noksen A/C bye-election campaign, Opposition congress has slammed the NPF saying the campaign has once again brought out the “cheap rhetoric and gimmicks of the NPF leaders on a mission to show their greed for power, as they (NPF) have nothing more to offer to the people after ten and half years of misrule.” A press release from the Media Cell, NPCC stated, “Going by the speeches made by various NPF leaders led by Chief Minister Rio and its President Dr Shurhozelie…, the congress wonders whether NPF

leaders went to Noksen for election campaign seeking votes for NPF candidate, or to serve ultimatum to the voters of Noksen assembly constituency.” According to the release, the Chief Minister’s statement, “There should not be any confusion as to who is running the government” sums up his own “predicament” while starting his third term with “unmanageable situation created as a result of his divisive policy and misgovernance.” The statement alleged that of late, the NPF leaders seem to have found fascination for the word “confused” by repeatedly

asking the public not to be confused whether be it on deplorable road conditions or for voting in bye-elections. “The NPF leaders need not feel that the public are confused, rather it is they (NPF) who are confused after having promised plenty but failed to deliver during the last ten and half years of its rule.” Therefore, the word “confused” aptly sums up the state of NPF Leaders mind when it comes to issues of public importance, it added. Meanwhile, on the statement of the NPF President as to “whether the public were willing to enjoy the meal lavishly

spread or to starve for another five years,” NPCC said that it does not augur well for the state and its people since “it exposes the negative and intolerant mentality inherent in these leaders.” It asserted that the public should understand that the lavish meal is meant only for “handful of NPF leaders and their cronies as the past records will substantiate.” NPCC also confirmed that the pathetic educational infrastructure in Tuensang district which was prominently highlighted on the front page of a local daily should serve as reminder that “the NPF led DAN has done nothing on

ground, despite the fact that hundreds of crores have been pumped in through SSA and RMSA schemes, generously granted by the centre for the past many years.” The statement further stated that the people of Tuensang and more particularly, the voters of Noksen should decide whether to “risk the educational future of their children by voting for NPF or give a befitting reply to those who have destroyed the career of their children by rejecting the NPF.” It declared, “NPF led DAN government has done nothing for development of the state in the last 10 years and will do nothing in the next 5 years.”

Child refugees reach ‘one million’

U

N agencies say the number of children forced to flee Syria has reached one million, describing the figure as “a shameful milestone”. The UN’s refugee agency and Unicef say a further two million children are displaced within the country. More than 100,000 people have been killed in the conflict, according to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. He has also called for an investigation “without delay” into the recent alleged chemical weapons attack near Damascus. Activists say hundreds were killed in Wednesday’s attack, and Mr Ban is sending disarmament chief Angela Kane to Damascus to press for an investigation, his spokesman Eduardo del Buey said on Thursday. Russia Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s main ally - on Friday urged Syrian rebels to ensure that a UN team already in the country had safe access to the site of the alleged attack.

‘Traumatised’ The UN says children now make up half of all refugees fleeing Syria. About three-quarters of those children are under 11. “The youth of Syria are losing their homes, their family members and their futures,” said UN high commissioner for refugees Antonio Guterres. “Even after they have crossed a border to safety, they are traumatised, depressed and in need of a reason for hope,” he said. Most of the children have arrived in Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt, the UN says, and increasingly Syrians are fleeing to North Africa and Europe. But with its appeal for Syria less than 40% funded, the two UN agencies say they are struggling to meet the needs of the refugees. Just

118,000 of the refugee children have been able to continue in some sort of education, and a fifth have received psychosocial counselling. The BBC’s Imogen Foulkes in Geneva says the agencies are now warning of a lost generation that are ill-equipped to bring peace and stability to their country in the future. “We must all share the shame,” said Unicef executive director Anthony Lake, “because while we work to alleviate the suffering of those affected by this crisis, the global community has failed in its responsibility to this child. “We should stop and ask ourselves how, in all conscience, we can continue to fail the children of Syria.” Roger Hearn, Save the Children’s regional director for the Middle East, added: “It is appalling that the world has stood and watched as one million children have been forced from their country, terrified, traumatised and in some cases orphaned.” The UN says the conflict in Syria has caused the world’s worst refugee crisis for 20 years, with numbers not seen since the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. It says more than 1.7million people have registered as refugees since the uprising against the rule of President Assad began in March 2011. More than 40,000 Syrians have poured over the border of Iraqi Kurdistan since a new wave of arrivals began in the region a week ago. Shocking footage Speaking of the alleged chemical attack, Mr Ban said: “Any use of chemical weapons anywhere, by anybody, under any circumstances, would violate international law. Such a crime against humanity should result in serious consequences for the perpetrator.” Mr Ban has asked the Syrian gov-

• UNHCR has registered all one million children, preventing them from being stateless. The agency helps babies born in exile get birth certificates. UNHCR ensures all refugee families and children live in some form of safe shelter. • It is estimated more than 2 million children have been internally displaced within Syria and more than 7,000 have been killed during the conflict. • About 740,000 Syrian child refugees are under the age of 11. • More than 3,500 children in Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq have crossed Syria’s borders either unaccompanied or separated from their families.

ernment to let UN weapons inspectors, who are already in the country, investigate the allegations. “I can think of no good reason why any party - either government or opposition forces - would decline this opportunity to get to the truth of the matter,” Mr Ban said from the South Korean capital, Seoul. The inspection team currently only has a mandate to visit three previously agreed sites, including the northern town of Khan al-Assal, where some 26 people were killed in an alleged chemical attack in March. There is no sign yet that Damascus will allow the team to extend its mission, and Syrian adviser Bassam Abu Abdullah told the BBC he believed it would not be allowed to visit the site. Dr Bassam said the chemical attack was carried out by what he called a terrorist group, to prevent a military operation by the Syrian army. The government earlier described the allegations that it sanctioned the use of chemical weapons as “illogical and fabricated”. But unverified footage shows civilians - many of them children - apparently suffering horrific symptoms, as well as rows of shrouded bodies. Chemical weapons experts have told the BBC that footage appears genuine and that the injuries shown are consistent with nerve agents. International clamour over the alleged chemical attacks has continued to grow. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius warned that France must react “with force” if the use of chemical weapons was confirmed. The US state department said it was urgently gathering information to try to determine what had taken place in Damascus.

• Displaced children are at high risk of disease and ill health. UNICEF and its partners have vaccinated more than 1.3 million children against measles in refugee and host communities outside Syria this year. • Children seeking refuge are suffering trauma. UNICEF has supported 167,000 refugee children with received psychosocial assistance. • Children seeking refugee have had to cease schooling. UNICEF has delivered schooling to more than 118,000 children inside and out of formal schools. • The conflict has put pressure on already compromised water supplies and sanitation facilities. UNICEF has supplied more than 222,000 people with water. • Both UNICEF and UNHCR have stressed the hidden threats to refugee children from child labour, early marriage and the potential for sexual exploitation and trafficking.

Syrian refugees arrive at the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan, just several miles from the country's border with war-torn Syria. Many have walked for hours cross-country, carrying what possessions they can. The camp is currently home to at least 175,000 Syrians -- making it the fifth largest, and fastest growing city in Jordan.

cross the UK, British kids are getting ready - most likely with heavy hearts - to return to the classroom as the new school year starts. But for Syria's children, the routines of childhood usually taken for granted will pass unobserved. Because today marks a tragic milestone in Syria's brutal conflict: one million children have now been forced to flee their homeland. Children make up half of all refugees from the Syrian conflict, the vast majority of them under the age of 11. And these are just the children who have managed to escape across the border to Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, or Iraq. Inside Syria, 7,000 children are believed to have been killed during the conflict and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that a further two million children are displaced but remain inside the country. As the conflict drags on, these children risk becoming Syria's lost generation. Earlier this year, I met twelve year-old Ali, one of the newest arrivals in Jordan's Za'atari refugee camp. With a mischievous smile,

freckles and baseball cap, Ali would have seemed at home in any London street. 'You're from England? Arsenal! Arsenal!' he chanted, as he offered me candyfloss and showed me photos on his phone. But Ali had faced the kind of horror I could only struggle to comprehend. Just two weeks beforehand, his younger brother had been killed by shelling in the family's home town of Daraa. And rolling up his trousers, he showed me the scars from a sniper attack covering his legs. 'All we want is freedom,' he told me. 'But now we are too scared to go home.' Sadly, Ali's story is far from unique. The numbers involved in this crisis are staggering. Latest figures show that more than 768,000 Syrian child refugees are under the age of eleven. That's the same as the number of children under the age of nine living in London. And more than 3,500 of these children have crossed Syria's borders either unaccompanied or separated from their families. Despite providing shelter and safety from immediate danger, a refugee camp is no place to spend a childhood. The dislocation from home is traumatic for any refugee, but being far from home with big gaps in education can leave children

particularly vulnerable to exploitation from forced labour, military recruitment, early marriage or trafficking. All one million of Syria's refugee children have been registered by UNHCR, which means that they have an identity in exile, as well as access to education, counseling and other support services. The agency is also helping babies born in exile to get birth certificates, preventing them from becoming stateless. But more remains to be done. The UN has called for almost £2 billion to address the acute needs of refugees until December of this year, but only 38 per cent of this sum has been received. More resources need to be devoted to plugging the gaps in education and health care, and building strong networks to identify refugee children at risk. Funding alone cannot halt this tragedy; only a political solution can bring an end to the suffering. Until then, families must be free to leave Syria safely. Borders must remain open and Syrians in need of refuge in the UK and elsewhere in Europe should be offered protection - a crucial first step towards restoring hope and rebuilding a future for the children of Syria. (Source: huffingtonpost.co.uk)

his week, as another Syrian child crossed the border, fleeing the horrors of a war now in its third destructive year, we passed a new milestone of global shame. This was the one millionth child forced from Syria since the horrors began. Imagine that child. Forced from a community under gunfire. Walking, often for several days, in search of safety. Then, in exile, forced to live in a tent, shack or an abandoned shop with their family – if they still have one. Reliant on the support of international aid agencies to survive. Haunted by the memories of this terrible conflict, vulnerable to exploitation, scarred by the trauma of a childhood which has witnessed things no child should see. Those scars appear as loss of speech, broken sleep, and challenging behaviour. Financial pressures may lead parents to send this child to work rather than to school or, if she is a girl, to marry her off at a young age. This child may be all alone, separated from the rest of their family, or perhaps he or she is suddenly the head of the household, charged with the care of younger siblings. Now imagine that child's future, and the future of all those innocent children caught in the midst of the terror. Robbed of schooling – indeed, in many ways, robbed of their childhood – how will they recover, and some day even thrive, supporting their families, and contributing to society? Many are becoming angry at their plight, which is

dangerous for the region. These are children and young people whose anger and frustration will all too likely replicate, in the next generation, the divisions and hatreds of today. This is one reason why, earlier this year, the UNHCR and Unicef warned that a whole generation was at risk in Syria. We repeat that warning today. More than half of refugees fleeing Syria are children. We are doing all we can to help each and every one of them, their families and the communities that host them. We also work to bring aid to the 3 million vulnerable children who are at particular risk inside Syria. Along with partners in non-government organisations and civil society groups, we continue to work to meet urgent needs in the refugee camps and to assist

generous host families in neighbouring countries. This year alone, inside and outside Syria, more than 10 million people have been provided with drinking water. Two million children have been immunised against killer diseases. More than 250,000 children have been helped to access some form of education. Nearly 170,000 have received psychosocial assistance. We have registered thousands of children, giving them an identity and helped the babies born in exile get birth certificates, preventing them from becoming stateless. Whether in camps, villages or cities, most live in a basic, but safe shelter. But the needs are growing faster than our capacity to respond to the plight of all these children. The Syria regional refugee response plan is, to date, less than

40% funded. Syrian children need action by those who can enable humanitarian agencies inside Syria to safely and immediately reach those worst affected, and action by donors – traditional and new – who in addition to their existing generosity will be called upon to do even more, so humanitarian organisations can alleviate suffering. But more than anything, these children deserve action by those who have the power to bring an immediate end to this conflict and the suffering it has caused. One million children. Surely, those involved in the fighting, and all those with the influence to stop it, can agree that one million refugee children is one million too many. They have the means, and therefore a particular responsibility, to put an end to this horror.

INSPIRATIONAL STORIES, MESSAGES, POEMS & SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES

What a special needs child taught Daniel's Prayer: Longing for Rescue me about the fruit of the spirit “W Kelly Givens, Contributing Editor to Crosswalk.com

Ellen Stumbo

“W

hen you say,” my friend asked, “that God has worked in your life because of your kids with special needs, what exactly do you mean by that?” “Yes, let me try to explain. ... I don’t just know about the fruits of the Spirit, I get to experience them. It’s like I was right there in the orchard, picking them and tasting them.” Galatians 5:22-23 says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these” (NIV). When my daughter was born with Down syndrome, I struggled to see God’s good gift in my daughter. I was too concerned about how her diagnosis would limit our family. Little did I know that her diagnosis was indeed a gift in my life that God would use time and time again. I used to think I loved well. I would have even claimed to love my family and first daughter (who is a typical child) unconditionally. My daughter’s diagnosis challenged me in that area. I knew little about loving someone not for what they can or cannot do, but simply because they are. No strings attached, not based on performance or meeting my expectations. Pure love. The older my daughter is, the more joy I experience as she celebrates everyday life. She doesn’t hold back. She cheers over a bag of chips, she claps to cheer others or she jumps and runs to give her daddy hugs. While parenting children with special needs can be difficult, I have peace about it. This is exactly where God wants me to be, and I am OK with that. Having kids with

special needs quickly teaches you about patience. My two girls with special needs don’t do things like their peers do. They take a little bit longer, and they do it in their own time. Thanks to my daughter, kindness has be-

come a more prevalent part of my life. I have a better understanding about what really matters in life, and it makes a difference with how I approach life. It doesn’t take long to be

Giving in to Effective Prayer: The David Wilkerson Story

O

George O. Wood Charisma Magazine

n Feb. 9, 1958, a young Assemblies of God pastor in a rural town in Pennsylvania was watching the late show on TV while his wife and small children were asleep. On that night he evaluated his life. "How much time am I spending in front of the TV each night?" he asked himself. "A couple of hours at least. What if I sold the TV set and spent that time praying?" The next morning he and his wife agreed to sell their TV if, after putting the ad in the paper, it sold within on hour after the paper hit the streets. At the 29th minute the phone rang. “How much?” The young pastor had not even thought of the price—but he instantly said, “$100.” The caller said, “I’ll take it. I’ll be there in 15 minutes.” On Feb. 25, a late Tuesday evening near the end of his prayer time—just 2 weeks and 2 days after the decision to sell the TV—this young pastor was in his study praying and began to feel a great heaviness. He felt an urge to pick up Life magazine, but resisted at first because he didn’t want to fall into a trap of reading a magazine on his prayer time. He had been fidgeting that evening—his wife and children had been away visiting grandparents in Pittsburgh. The magazine beckoned to him from his desk. Finally, he said, “Lord, is there something You want me to see?” He sat down in his brown swivel chair and opened the magazine. He leafed along and came to a page that at first seemed to have nothing to interest him. It carried a pen drawing of a trial taking place 350 miles away in New York City—a place he had never been. The eyes of one of the seven

figures in the drawing, on trial for murder caught his attention. The look in the boy’s eyes was one of bewilderment, hatred, and despair. The young pastor began to cry. He said aloud to himself, “What’s the matter with me?” He looked at the picture more carefully. The boys were all teenagers. They were members of a gang called the Dragons. They had brutally attacked and killed a 15-year-old polio victim named Michael Farmer. The seven boys had stabbed Michael in the back seven times with their knives, and then beat him over the head with garrison belts. They went away wiping blood through their hair, saying, “We messed him good.” The story revolted the young pastor. It turned his stomach. And, then a thought came—Go to New York City and help those boys. On Friday morning the young pastor was in the courtroom—and the rest of the story is history. Had David Wilkerson not given himself to prayer, Teen Challenge would never have happened. Since that time the ministry of Teen Challenge has transformed hundreds of thousands of lives. Around the world today and every day, 24,000 men and women are currently in a center being sent free by the power of Christ. There’s a needlepoint in David Wilkerson’s office from his daughter, Bonnie: “My dad is famous not for who he is, but because he dared to listen when God wanted to hold conversation.” May we also listen when God wants to hold conversation. The Early Church father, John Chrysostom, expressed it eloquently and succinctly: “God can refuse nothing to a praying church.” (George O. Wood is general superintendent of the Assemblies of God.)

a part of the special needs community to realize it is made of remarkable people. There is so much goodness and acceptance in the special needs community. Just watch a parent with their child with special needs and you see the faithfulness in the parent, the commitment to care for that child. I have more compassion for all people because of my children with special needs. There is a gentleness in me that wasn’t there before. I exercise self-control often. Some people say rude things without realizing what they are saying. Sometimes I want to lash out and be angry because I am hurt. In those moments, it takes selfcontrol to smile, to be gentle, kind and respond with love. I’ve really been thinking about this lately, so I decided to look up the verse in different translations so I could take more time to meditate on the fruit of the Spirit the special needs way. When I came to the version in The Message, I knew it was perfect for us special needs parents—a perfect summary of how we do indeed get to taste the fruit: "But what happens when we live God’s way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely." (Adapted from Ellen Stumbo's blog. e do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy. O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and act! For your sake, O my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name.” - Daniel 9:17-19 If you’re ever trying to find something to study in the Word, one neat thing you might try is reading the great prayers of the Bible. Think Genesis 18:16-33 for Sodom and Gomorrah, 1 Samuel 1:1016 for a child, Jonah 2 in the belly of the great fish, and of course,Matthew 6:913, which Jesus himself taught his disciples. I’ve found these teach us more than just how to pray. Through these prayers we learn what it means to be people of faith. We also see God’s character revealed to us and learn why prayer is important to God. Daniel 9 contains one of these great prayers: Daniel’s prayer to God on behalf of the Israelites. In the first few verses, Daniel tells us that after reading the writings of the prophet Jeremiah he understood that the exile-- which he had been apart of for most of his life-- was nearing an end. We might expect Daniel to celebrate, but instead he says, “I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting and in sackcloth and ashes” (Daniel 9:3). What in the world is going on here? If Daniel truly believed God’s promise to end the exile, why is he praying as if he didn’t? When I thought through this, I realized Daniel didn’t doubt God would deliver on his promise. Rather, he understood that prayer is an expression of faith in the promises of God. It also helps us align our hearts to God’s will and purpose in the world. Daniel was essentially saying, “God, this is awesome news. I want this so badly. Don’t let our sinful-

ness keep you from acting on this great plan. Don’t delay, rescue us soon!” We too have been promised an end to our own exile of sorts- Jesus promises to return and bring his Kingdom with him when he comes. He promises the end of our captivity to sin and to bring us into ever-lasting life in the New Jerusalem, in his presence forever! This is an incredible promise. But are we praying for it the way Daniel was praying for Israel’s return from exile? We pray “Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done,” but do we really mean it? I know I often don’t. I’m usually content in this broken world, in captivity. I’m comfortable here; I’m used to it. I don’t often long for the Jesus to come back. But God desires us to be like Daniel, to remember our sinfulness, confess and to pray that Jesus would indeed come back soon. God’s promises are intended to encourage us to pray, not to make us shrug our shoulders and say, ‘Oh well, it’ll happen one day, regardless of if I pray or not.” We need to pray as Daniel did, not because God needs our prayers to accomplish his purposes, but because we need to submit ourselves to his plans. We need to long for what he longs for, and for Christians today, the number one thing on our prayer list, our number one longing, should be the return of Jesus. Intersecting Faith and Life: God has promised us that he is coming back to claim this world as his own and to rescue all those who have placed their faith in him. Are you living in light of this promise? If not, meditate on scripture that affirms Jesus’ return, and pray your heart would desire this as much as God does. How to KILL the hidden power of jealousy

N

JS Park

o one ever looks in the mirror and says, “I’m a jealous person,” because it implies other people are better than us or that we’re weak somehow, and we’re always trying to protect our egos. Because it’s so hidden, jealousy is one of the most destructive problems of all. I’m so good at pretending I’m not jealous that I can disguise my hate as “criticism” and “observation” and “keeping it real.” Certainly criticism doesn’t always come from jealousy, but you can tell when it does. I can attack someone’s weaknesses and presume a whole bunch of other weaknesses by clever extrapolation, all while highlighting my strengths, and this makes me nothing more than a jealous, petty little hater. During testimony-time at church when everyone is confessing all kinds of drug addictions and sexual deviance, I’ve never heard a single person say, “I’ve destroyed others with my envy.” No one ever says, “I’m straight up drunk from haterade.” When you see someone better than you—and we all do—there are two ways to respond. 1. Find ways to downgrade their human value, then rationalize your own contempt as justified criticism. 2. Celebrate their achievements and generously promote their growth while learning from them in humility. When you know a younger person who has potential ... Jealousy has a way of cutting in and holding back the next generation. Instead of seeing a future leader, you see a competitive threat who is messing up your mojo. I’ve

When it comes to our friends and peers ... Our default mode is always to be envious. The only way to fight that is to celebrate what others have accomplished instead of reveling in how they’ve failed. People can tell by your speech when you have deval-

ued another human being. They can see by your face when you’re bitter at people who are “further along.” You find it harder to be compassionate, and you go for cynicism and grossly inappropriate speculation. Yet if you can truly lift up someone above yourself, you’ll be free of the prison of jealousy. You will extract the roots of bitterness and anger. And it takes two seconds. You’ll soon become the kind of person that others want to hang out with, including yourself—and you won’t be the hater who argues with angry counterpoints by reblogging blogs and getting as serious as a stick in the butt. Even you don’t like that guy. Deeper than all this is the root of jealousy. What are you really saying when you fall into a comparison trap? “God, you owe me more than this. A better universe, existence, opportunities, experiences, life, people, family—even a better car would do.” It’s not enough to just raise up other people then. It’s a fundamental root issue with God: Because you’re really saying, “He’s not enough. He doesn’t satisfy. He doesn’t see me. He doesn’t know what He’s doing.” Honestly, I’m tired of doing this. I’m tired of shaking my fist at God when I see someone more attractive than me. I’m tired of trying to be the guy with the better story all the time. I’m exhausted by thinking I know better than God, because I don’t, and the more I think I do, the more I run myself into the ground. The Gospel tells me that I deserved nothing, but God gave me everything. Jesus could’ve stayed in Heaven in paradise—but he became poor so that we might be rich. He was crucified so we could live with

him forever. That revokes all my fist-shaking, foolish temper tantrums. Then I’m just a bug trying to flag down a helicopter. In my moronic selfishness, I forget that God is gloriously powerful and that it’s all His story, and not mine. I forget He’s actually been pretty good to me, too. The clay does get to say a few things to the potter, but I’m thankful that I even have a potter at all, and that He cares, and that everything good is from Him, and anything else is not for me to worry about, because God’s on it. It’s that icky word surrender, which doesn’t go over in our culture very well. But the second you do that, your teeth unclench. Your fists lower. Your heart stops pounding and you quit getting all twitchy every time someone does something slightly better. We no longer hurt ourselves by our comparison games. Instead, you surrender to the God who made you you, and you accept who you are. You quit trying to have the best of all worlds. We quit trying to be perfect. We quit trying to be God. It turns out, I can get myself out of the way and celebrate others. It turns out, God really is God, and He’s gifted me with all grace to let go of my petty weapons and build this next generation for His glorious story. You and I—let’s lay down our arms and fight this good fight together.

in place. The temptation for women to go back into the clubs can be very strong, so we really try our best to use discernment and wisdom, and we thoroughly pray about each decision." Even though the JC's Girls are not ministering to women overseas, they're still impacted by their mission work, which can be mentally, emotionally and spiritually exhausting as they interface with women who work in the sex industry, as well as the men they meet inside the strip clubs and the California porn conventions. Brown emphasized the significance of the power of prayer, and said that a prayer team covers them in prayer while they're out, and then they "pray, pray and pray some more! We typically go on outreach right after our Bible study and we pray before we leave the church, before we enter the strip club and after we walk out of the doors." Pastor Craig Gross, co-founder of XXXChurch.com based in Pasadena, Calif., is also no stranger to broaching the topic of pornography, and for 11 years has been reaching out to the

men and women who work in the sex industry, most notably, Ron Jeremy, whom he's established a friendship. Craig told CP that the XXXChurch started stripchurch.com in 2009 and now have 64 outreaches worldwide that reach out to women who work in the sex industry, including brothels, strip clubs and street prostitution. Similarly, they go to between eight and 11 porn shows a year to minister to people who work in the industry, as well as those who are attending the conventions. "We go where most religious folks are scared to go," Craig said. "Our motto is: 'you can't blame the dark for being dark, you have to blame the light for not shining on the dark.' We build relationships, we show love, and we show up in their world and don't expect them to come to our world. We don't ask for anything. We serve them and show them we care." To ensure that those who are part of the XXXChurch outreaches are not tempted or lured into the sexually pervasive and morally corrupt world of the sex industry, Craig emphasized that no

one on the team travels alone. But he also noted that people usually don't fall into temptation when they're working in outreach, and said that people who are tempted by pornography usually do so in the privacy of their own home. "We don't take this lightly, but we're not scared, either," he said. "We take people who have a heart for these people and I don't fear that this is going to be a place where you would see people fall while they're in the midst of serving. Most people fall apart behind closed doors, but not out on the front lines." To prepare the outreach teams before they venture out to pray, minister and counsel those who need the love of Jesus Christ, Craig said that through strip church they've established a network of like-minded ministries that communicate through a closed Facebook account, weekly blogs, and monthly phone and Internet calls to support and encourage each other as they continue their mission work; and most importantly, they share praises for the lives that have been transformed through Jesus Christ.

seen even the best of leaders clench their teeth as they raise up young disciples, ever so slightly keeping the youth at a lower level and withholding advice and downplaying all their success. What is that? What makes us do this? Why can’t we just hand over the baton? A leader’s job is to work yourself out of a job. And you’re a leader somewhere, either passing on your life or hoarding it for yourself. You have more wisdom and ability than you think you do. When you talk about your passion, you’ll say things you didn’t even know you knew. You have so much to give. So it makes no sense to keep this all to yourself. We so often hold onto our positions of authority with a ridiculous nuclear death-grip. But without passing it on, it all dies with you. I know letting go of jealousy feels like we’re losing something. It feels like we’re handing over years of sweat and hard work to a kid who doesn’t have to pay for the lesson. BUT—someone in your life did the same for you. Someone learned through a horrible mistake for 10 years and passed it on to you in 10 minutes. Every generation before you has accumulated valuable truth for you to be equipped, prepared and successful. And even if you never had this sort of mentor, you’ve always wanted one.

Christians outreach into strip clubs, porn conventions to share love of Jesus Southern Calif. Ministry Leaders from Rock Church and XXXChurch Share Stories of Compassion

I

nstead of ostracizing and condemning men and women who work in the porn industry, two Christian ministries from Southern California are among several in the nation that are reaching out to workers in strip clubs and porn conventions in an attempt to share God's love for them. Their efforts are showing positive results say the leaders of a group of women at Rock Church in San Diego that started a ministry chapter of JC's Girls seven years ago, and in Pasadena, where XXXChurch is headquartered and outreaches to men and women. Sheri Brown, one of the lead coordinators for the San Diego chapter of JC's Girls, told The Christian Post on Tuesday that their trained volunteers' mission field includes going to all of the strip clubs in San Diego,

porn conventions in Los Angeles, as well as anywhere else God calls them to go to "reach out in love" as they form bonds with the women who are desperately searching for love and fulfillment in their lives. "We just do what the Holy Spirit calls us to do and allow Him to do the rest, opposed to focusing on what He might be up to or try to keep a record of the lives we've seen touched by the Lord through this ministry," Brown said. "There have been times God has shown us fruit two- to four-years after an outreach, which totally blesses us. But the whole ministry is not for us, it's for Him. We know that God is always working behind the scenes and I truly believe He only allows us to see a tiny fraction of what He's actually doing." To build a rapport with the women, JC's Girls take a large gift basket filled with hot pink Bibles, jewelry, lotions, candy, nail polish, lip gloss, and copies of the "Father's Love Letter." The San Diego chapter is comprised of six ministry teams, including an outreach team. "When women express an interest

in joining the outreach team, we have a few requirements they must meet before even being interviewed. They must be committed to attending Bible studies – and have been attending consistently for at least four months – their love for Jesus must be evident, their motives for wanting to do outreach must be pure, and their heart needs to be in the right place. They must also read Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers, fill out an application, and meet with the leadership team for an interview," Brown said. Brown, who told CP that her chapter has fine-tuned their strategies during the last seven years, said she advises against allowing women who are struggling with pornography addiction or lust from joining the JC's Girls outreach team, because the temptations for them can be overwhelming. "When we first started the ministry, I thought that any woman who came out of the industry would be perfect for the outreach team, but that couldn't have been further from the truth. We actually lost women back to the industry in the earlier days because we didn't have guidelines

Police arrest

New Delhi, august 24 (ageNCies): The Mumbai Crime Branch on Saturday evening arrested third suspect in connection with Thursday’s gang-rape of a young photojournalist, according to TV reports. The report further says that the third accused is between 20 to 25 years of age. Earlier on the day, the police had arrested the second accused, while a jobless man, already under arrest, was produced before a magisterial court which remanded him in police custody till August 30. Accused Vijay Jadhav was picked up in the wee hours Saturday from Madanpura area by the Crime branch. “We have arrested a second accused in the gang-rape case and he has confessed to his involvement. The probe is heading in the right direction and we hope to arrest all other absconding accused soon,” commissioner of police Satyapal Singh told reporters. Though Singh refused to divulge the identity of the accused, sources in the

police department gave his name as Vijay Jadhav. “The man has given information about others on the run and we will apprehend them soon. They have gone a little far off,” the officer said in reply to a query. Asked about the evidence gathered against the accused so far, he said, “We have all the evidence against them and will file a comprehensive charge sheet.” About the condition of the victim, Singh, who visited Jaslok Hospital where she is undergoing treatment, said, “Her mother told me it is good and improving.” Regarding the claim of the family of Mohammed Abdul, the teenage accused, the first to be arrested in the case, that he was a juvenile, the police commissioner said, “We will tell you about the profile, age and other related things once all of them are arrested.” Three other accused identified as Qasim Bengali, Saleem and Ashfaq are still at large and a manhunt has been launched to nab them.

Sonia ‘100%’ sure of UPA’s return to power, rules out early polls New Delhi, august 24 (ageNCies): Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday expressed confidence that the United Progressive Alliance would win the 2014 elections, and virtually ruled out early Lok Sabha polls. Talking informally to media people after the inauguration of National Media Centre in New Delhi, Gandhi also expressed hope that the food security bill will be passed in the monsoon session of parliament. Asked if UPA-III (United Progressive Alliance-III) will be a reality, she said: “Certainly. 100 per cent......obviously so many rights we have given. It is our right to information, right to education and now right to food is our USP”, she said when asked about the possibility of UPA coming back to power and what was the USP on which the elections will be fought.

To a question about the possibility of early general elections, she said: “Our aim is to go till the end (of the government’s tenure).” Asked about the food security bill which is pending despite government efforts for its passage, Gandhi said: “We are hopeful it will be passed.” The United Progressive Alliance government, now in its second term, has been facing intense criticism from the opposition on issues related price rise, the falling value of the rupee and corruption. The term of the UPA-II government will end in May next year. Gandhi also expressed concern and anguish over the gruesome gang-rape of the 22-year-old photojournalist in Mumbai two days ago. “It is a heinous crime... It should not have happened,” Gandhi said, while interacting with reporters.

New Delhi, august 24 (iaNs): A state-of-the art National Media Centre comparable to those in capitals across the world was inaugurated Saturday, with an impressive conference hall, workplace for the media, a library, cafeteria and high-speed internet. The four-storied Rs.60 crore facility, built over three years, is located at the heart of the capital, on Raisina Road - with many important government buildings a stone’s throw away and in the vicinity of the Parliament House and Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Press Club of India and the Indian Women’s Press Corps are right next door. The cream sandstone and blue glass facadebuilding has glass-covered corridors on each floor, overlooking a garden at the centre. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, speaking at the inauguration, said the building was not only New Delhi’s latest landmark but also “showcases our ability to keep pace with similar state-of-theart facilities across the world. It symbolizes the vibrant mood of the existing media landscape in our country.” Though conceived in 1989 to facilitate greater interaction between the government and the media, the building plan did not take off due to changes in designs and concept. It is the first such media centre in India. According to an infor-

mation and broadcasting ministry official, the media centre is planned on the model of media centres in some of the capitals of the world such as Washington and Tokyo. Some of the offices of the Press Information Bureau - the nodal government agency for disseminating information to the media - will shift from Shastri Bhavan. The swanky centre has a press conference hall to accommodate 283 media persons, a briefing room for about 60 people, 24 work stations for the media, a library, media lounge and cafeteria. The press conference hall and media lounge are wi-fi enabled, said the statement issued by the information and broadcasting ministry. It also has facilities for live webcast, video feed to television channels outside the building, IT facilities for media persons working in the lounge, internet telephony and facilities for audio visual screening. The media centre is aimed at further improving the dissemination of information about government’s policies and programmes, it said. “The effort is to meet the requirements of the international and Indian media for their professional and communication needs within the overall Government of India framework of information dissemination,” said the statement. Constructed by the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC), it is built on 13,867 sqm.

3rd suspect, hunt on for 2 others Meanwhile, Chand Babu Sattat Shaikh alias Mohammed Abdul, was produced before the Bhoiwada holiday court at Dadar amid protests by a large number of BJP and Shiv Sena activists, who shouted slogans condemning the incident. Public Prosecutor Nandagiri told the court that the 23-year-old victim was still recuperating at the hospital and Abdul’s custody was needed to trace the absconding accused. The victim was gangraped by five men on Thursday evening when she and her male colleague had gone to the deserted Shakti Mills compound in Lower Parel on assignment. The incident brought back shocking memories of the December gangrape of a paramedic in Delhi which had sparked a nation-wide outrage.

According to Satyapal Singh, more than 20 teams, including 10 from the elite Crime Branch, have been pressed into service to track down the culprits. Meanwhile, the hospital where the victim is being treated today said her condition was improving. “The patient’s condition is much better today. However, we are monitoring her health from all aspects of care,” said a statement issued by Dr Tarang Gianchandani, acting CEO and Director, Medical Services of Jaslok Hospital. The incident has sent shock waves across the nation as people from all walks of life voiced their anguish with political parties, media associations and Bollywood demanding harshest punishment to the perpetrators of the crime in a city which is seen far safer for women than the national capital.

Chidambaram hears out FIIs, banks; promises action

MuMbai, august 24 (bs): Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Saturday reassured representatives of foreign institutions and banks that the government was on top of the ongoing economic situation. In two separate meetings with foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and banks at a hotel in Mumbai’s western suburbs, Chidambaram along with economic affairs secretary Arvind Mayaram and Rajeev Takru, secretary department of financial services, sought feedback from the participants about their concerns over what was happening in the country’s financial markets. FIIs were eager to know what new steps and policy action the government is taking to ensure stability in the market, said four people who were part of the meeting. These investors also sought the finance ministry’s views on flagging growth, rupee fall, current account deficit (CAD), interest rate direction and issues impeding investments. The Finance Minister assured FIIs that once the

rupee’s slide was curbed and stability returns to the currency markets, interest rates would start falling, said a person who attended the meeting. “The Finance Minister also assured us that CAD and fiscal deficit would come under control soon,” the person said. Chidambaram is said to have told FIIs that the disinvestment of its holdings in Specified Undertaking of UTI (SUUTI) is in the offing. SUUTI-—the restructured unit of the erstwhile UTI- holds shares of ITC, Axis Bank and Larsen & Toubro. The FII meeting was facilitated by foreign brokerages including Citi, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Deutsche Bank. Executives who attended the meeting said Chidambaram was mostly listening to the participants and were encouraging suggestions from them. Chidambaram asked for feedback from FIIs on the measures that were needed to improve sentiment and fix the CAD by attracting more capital flows, said another person pricy

to the matter. Among other things, FIIs asked the government to remove all the limits and restrictions on FII debt. Also, they asked the government to list on JP Morgan global debt index to attract long term foreign flows. Investors said the finance ministry that the hardening of US bond yields is affecting overseas flows. They cautioned that if the yields harden further we could see more outflows. “One has to keep an eye on what the US Fed is doing. US Fed’s meeting on September 15 will be important,” said the second person who attended the meeting. In a separate meeting with banks, Chidambaram, Mayaram and Takru assured exeutives that measures to attract more deposits and government clearances of large projects were underway.“The discussion was about how we can improve the dollar flow in the country. It was just an exchange of ideas between the leading banker who

New Delhi, august 24 (Pti): Arrested Lashkar-e-Taiba operative Abdul Karim Tunda today underwent a surgery to implant a pacemaker in his heart at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi. 70-year-old Tunda, who was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital on Thursday night after he complained of severe chest pain and shifted to AIIMS yesterday afternoon, was detected with complete heart block, hospital sources said. His condition was stated to be stable after the surgery. Tunda was taken to the cath lab at around 2.45

pm today from the cardiac care unit following which the doctors implanted a pacemaker in his heart, the sources said. He underwent the procedure in the supervision of cardio consultants Dr Nitish Naik and Dr Gautam

He is suspected to be involved in 40 bombings in the country and is the first in the list to be arrested. According to Delhi Police, he is wanted for his role in 1993 Mumbai serial train blasts, Delhi bomb blasts of 1997-98 and serial bombings in Uttar Pradesh and also at Panipat, Sonepat, Ludhiana and Hyderabad.

Bo admits “shame”, denies protecting wife

In this image taken from video, former Chinese politician Bo Xilai, center, addresses a court at Jinan Intermediate People's Court in eastern China's Shandong province on August 24. Disgraced politician Bo on Saturday mocked a former city official's testimony that he embezzled government funds with a phone call to his wife, refuting the latest allegation in a politically charged trial that's laid bare tales of greed, machinations and betrayal in one of China's elite families. JINAN, August 24 (ReuteRs): Ousted senior Chinese politician Bo Xilai admitted to shaming his country and poorly handling a defection attempt by his former police chief after he told Bo his wife had committed murder, but Bo denied trying to protect her from the accusation. Bo was a rising star in China’s leadership circles when his career was stopped short last year by the scandal involving his wife, Gu Kailai. Bo is now on trial charged with corruption, taking bribes and abuse of power. Supporters of Bo’s Maoist-themed social pro-

according to a transcript provided by the court. “So I bear some responsibility for Wang Lijun’s flight and I feel very sorry for this.” “I have made mistakes and errors, I feel very sorry and I’m willing to take appropriate responsibility, but whether there was a crime or not is another matter,” Bo said. “I did not act illegally to show favouritism and protect Gu Kailai.” Bo said he did not believe it when Wang first told him Gu was a suspect in Heywood’s murder, saying Gu had shown Bo a Chongqing police report that said Heywood died of a heart attack bought on by drinking, which Heywood’s wife had signed. “In my mind, Gu Kailai is a weak and frail woman, she could not kill someone. And she had a good relationship with Wang Lijun,” Bo said. Bo was furious with Wang when he was told that his wife was a murder suspect, and sacked him despite not having party authority to do so, sources with knowledge of the case have said. Neither did Bo report the matter to his bosses in Beijing, all of which led to the abuse of power charge, they said. Bo ordered his mayor, Huang Qifan, and security personnel to besiege the U.S. mission in Chengdu and take Wang into custody, even though he had no authority to mobilise security forces to grab someone in another city, the sources also said. Wang was eventual-

ly coaxed out by officials from Beijing and taken to the capital. The Chongqing government initially explained he was worn out and emotionally spent and

had taken a “vacation-style treatment”. “Lacked alertness” Bo denied sacking Wang because of the murder allegations against Gu, saying he had reassigned Wang for genuine health reasons as Wang had complained of the pressure of his job. Wang himself appeared in court to testify against Bo, saying he believed Bo sacked him to cover up the murder, adding that Bo had punched him during a confrontation over Gu’s role in the crime. “It was very dangerous at that time,” Wang said, when asked why he had fled to the U.S. consulate. “I was the victim of violence, and my colleagues and those handling the case had

ment funds he is accused of embezzling which ended up in his wife’s bank account, saying he had let his attention wander, in testimony read out in court. Bo said that Wang Zhenggang, former director of the urban and rural planning bureau in Dalian, where Bo once served as mayor, told him in 2002 that he suggested to Bo the money be used by Bo’s wife and son, who was studying overseas. “I refused him. Afterwards, Wang Zhenggang came and found me again, told me why the money was difficult to deal with, and said that if I were busy he could talk to Gu Kailai about it,” Bo said, according to his testimony.

Bo said he agreed to Wang speaking to Gu about the money because he “lacked alertness”, which is how the money ended up going to her. “After Gu and Wang had their discussions, I did not go and investigate, I let it slide,” Bo said. “This money had already gone into my wife’s account, leading to the personal use of public money,” he said. “I am willing to approve the analysis of the prosecutors after their investigation, and at the same time accept legal responsibility for this. I am deeply ashamed and regretful about this incident,” Bo said. During court proceedings, Bo disputed Wang’s account of what had happened to the money as containing inconsistencies, but Bo did not dispute his earlier written deposition, according to court transcripts. “From start to finish in this written deposition I hold that I had did not intend to embezzle this money,” he said. On the first day of the trial, Bo mounted a feisty defence of charges he received more than 20 million yuan in bribes. Bo said that he had initially admitted to anti-corruption investigators receiving the bribes as he had been “under psychological pressure”. Bo also said he been framed by one of the men accused of bribing him, businessman Tang Xiaolin, who he called a “mad dog”.

WAshINgtoN, August 24 (IANs): Researchers in the United States say their studies suggest that greater consumption of fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing invasive bladder cancer in women. Researchers at the University of Hawaii described in the Journal of Nutrition that they analyzed data collected from 185,885 older adults over a period of 12.5 years, Xinhua reported. Overall, 152 women and 429 men were diagnosed with invasive bladder cancer. After adjusting for variables related to cancer risk, such as age, the researchers found that women who consumed the most fruits and vegetables had the lowest bladder risk. According to the researchers, women consum-

ing the most yellow-orange vegetables were 52 percent less likely to have bladder cancerthanwomenconsuming the least yellow-orange vegetables. The study also suggested that women with thehighestintakeofvitamins A, C and E had the lowest risk of bladder cancer. There are, however, no associations between fruit and vegetable intake and invasive bladder cancer in men, the study found. “Our study supports the fruit and vegetable recommendation for cancer prevention,” researcher Song-Yi Park at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center said in a statement. “However, further investigation is needed to understand and explain why the reduced cancer risk with higher consumption of fruits and vegetables was confined to only women,” Park said.

grammes say he lost out in a power struggle with capitalist-leaning reformists in Beijing, exposing divisions within the ruling Communist Party as well as society. With the evidence relating to the first two charges against Bo now apparently out of the way, the most sensitive charge was heard on Saturday, the third day of a trial many expected would last just a day. A guilty verdict for Bo is a foregone conclusion, and despite his spirited defence, published on the court’s official microblog, state media, which speaks for the party, has already all but condemned him.

As police chief of Chongqing, where Bo was Communist Party chief until he was dramatically sacked early last year, Wang Lijun was known as the strong arm of the law, energetically carrying out Bo’s crackdown on crime and gangs. But he fled to the U.S. consulate in the nearby city of Chengdu in February last year after confronting Bo with evidence that his wife Gu, a glamorous lawyer, was involved in the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood. After first helping Gu evade suspicion of poisoning Heywood, Wang

hushed up evidence of the murder, according to the official account of Wang’s trial. Both Wang and Gu have been jailed for the murder. When Wang told Bo of his suspicions about Gu, he was “angrily rebuked and had his ears boxed”, according to the official account of the incident related by state media. Bo told the court that he felt “ashamed” by Wang’s flight to the U.S. mission which had reflected badly on the image of the party and country. “I wasn’t able to behave cooly at a critical juncture and I made serious errors in judgement,” Bo said,

Los ANgeLes, August 24 (AFP): The mayor of the US city of San Diego resigned amid a wave of sexual harassment complaints, issuing a blanket apology but also decrying the “hysteria” surrounding the case. Mayor Bob Filner, a Democrat elected mayor of the southern Californian city in November, endured weeks of calls for his resignation. Angry citizens even organized a recall effort to remove him from office. “I apologize to all of you,” said Filner, 70, as he announced his resignation after a closed-door meeting with City Council members. Filner, however remained defiant. “Not one allegation ... has ever been independently verified or proven in court. I have never sexually harassed anyone. But there’s a hysteria that has been created, that many of you helped to feed. It’s the hysteria of a lynch mob.” As part of the agreement to leave office, San Diego will pay for a joint legal defense against sexual harassment lawsuits filed by employees or contractors. “I think I let you down,” said Filner, whose last day on the job is August 30. “To all the women that I offended, I had no intention to be offensive, to violate any physical or emotional space,” he said. “I was trying to establish personal relationships, but the combination of awkwardness and hubris led to behavior that many found offensive.” Although 18 alleged victims have publicly complained about the mayor’s inappropriate behavior, only one -- his former communications director, Irene McCormack -- has filed a lawsuit. She is represented by high-profile attorney Gloria Allred. “Today is a day of reckoning for Mayor Filner and a day of vindication for his many alleged victims,” Allred said. McCormack claims that Filner said he wanted to sleep with her, asked her to work in her underwear, and said that he would marry her. In July Filner admitted that he had engaged in “wrong and inexcusable behavior” and enrolled in two weeks of behavioral therapy starting August 5.

It did not, however, show any video of soldiers reportedly affected by toxic gas in the fighting in the Jobar neighborhood of Damascus. AuBuRN, August 24 (AP): It’s the curse — or maybe the blessing — of living in a place that doesn’t make or break presidential elections: The president and those running for the job just don’t come around very often. So President Barack Obama’s two-day bus tour this week through western and central New York, a state that reliably backs Democrats in presidential elections, set the region abuzz. Cheering crowds and curious onlookers lined the streets hoping for a glimpse of the president through the tinted windows of his armored bus. Residents gathered at local restaurants and other hot spots on the chance Obama might drop by. In nearly every instance, they left disappointed. And the newspaper in the small city of Auburn, N.Y., deployed nearly its entire staff of 12 to cover the president’s visit — even though his only event in town was a night’s sleep at the Holiday Inn. The scenes

idential campaigns. But Obama has occasionally hit the open road outside of the campaign cycles, boarding his black Secret Service-approved motor coach in search of an escape from the insular world of Washington and a way to reconnect with the American people. The presidential security apparatus means some of that connection happens from a distance as the motorcade speeds by. A woman on the sidewalk in Seneca Falls held up a small homemade sign that read “Thank You For Health Care” and told of her husband’s recent stroke. Residents in the lakefront town of Skaneateles sat in lawn chairs at the end of their driveways and waved American flags. The president did get some in-person time with the surprised lunchtime crowd at Magnolia’s restaurant in Rochester, and with the soccer teams at Tully Central High School, where he dropped by morning practice.

Obama stirred up an intra-school rivalry between the teams, telling the boys team that the girls said they would beat them. “They said, ‘Bring it,’” Obama said, eliciting laughs from the boys. Of course, there were plenty of Obama detractors along the motorcade route, as well as those pushing policy positions. As the president’s motorcade pulled into Binghamton University on Friday for a town hall meeting, dozens of protesters gathered outside to urge Obama to oppose fracking, a natural gas drilling pro-

where Obama spoke in Syracuse. They were joined by about a dozen people calling on Obama to cut U.S. aid to Egypt, where the military removed a democratically elected president. Obama took his bus tour through Pennsylvania on Friday afternoon, joining with Vice President Joe Biden for an event in Biden’s hometown of Scranton. From there, it was back to Washington and the familiar confines of the presidential bubble.

Obama on the road and outside the bubble were a reminder that despite the nation’s divided politics and Obama’s own faded star power, the office of the president is still revered by many Americans — or, at the very least, generates interest. Jeremy Boyer, the executive editor of The Citizen newspaper in Auburn, said many of the locals who gathered around town were there to see the spectacle: the lengthy motorcade, the imposing Secret Service detail, and “certainly the way they come in and just take over your city,” Boyer said. “Some of it is Obama,” he added. “It’s almost like because he’s the president, he doesn’t seem real to you.” Obama has frequently visited New York City, a fundraising hub for politicians. But he has rarely traveled elsewhere in the state. His trip this week underscored that second-term presidents no longer need to plan their travel itineraries around states that could go either way in elections. Bus tours have long been standard fare in pres-

cess. One woman held a sign that read: “I worked for you. Now please work for me. No fracking.” Fracking protesters also showed up a day earlier outside the high school

Mandeep scores a hat-trick as India crush Oman 8-0 in Asia Cup

NEW HAvEN, August 24 (REutERs): Reigning champion Petra Kvitova breezed into her second straight New Haven WTA final on Friday, where she'll face red-hot Romanian Simona Halep. Kvitova didn't put a foot wrong in a 6-0, 6-1 semifinal victory over her Czech FedCup teammate Klara Zakopalova. Halep defeated fourthseeded Caroline Wozniacki -- a former world number one and four-time winner of this event -- 6-2, 7-5. Halep broke Wozniacki three times in each set to claim the victory in one hour and 20 minutes. Kvitova, seeded third, needed just 50 minutes to get past unseeded Zakopalova in the semifinals of this US Open tuneup on the hardcourts at Yale University. "I think the beginning of the match was pretty close," Kvitova said. "Klara had chances to win the first game and the next game when she was serving. I think that was the turning point. "I was saying to myself, I need to stay focused in the first set and play really well because I know she can come back anytime and I need to be ready for it," added Kvitova, who had been taken to three sets in her previous three matches. "Well, she just played fantastic tennis today without any mistakes," said Zakopalova, ranked 33rd in the world. "I think everything was working for her, so I have to just

concentrated mainly on building formations. The Indians were expected to control the proceedings against Oman and they did exactly that as the play was mostly centred around the Oman half. After starting on a rather casual note, the Indians soon tightened up their grip over Oman and mounted continuous raids. In the opening half, majority of India's build ups came from the right flank with Ramandeep Singh and Malak Singh combining well. But penalty corner conversion still seems to be a worry for India as they utilised just two out of the six that came their way in the entire duration of 70 minutes. The Indians earned their first penalty corner as early as in the third minute but Rupinderpal's flick was saved by Oman goalkeeper Al Noufali Fahad Khamis Salmeen. But an op-

portunistic Mandeep scored from the resultant rebound to give India a 1-0 lead. India doubled their lead in the 17th minute through an unmarked Ramandeep who scored after receiving a Malak assist from the right flank. India earned a penalty in the 28th minute when Nithin Thimmaiah was brought down inside the Oman circle and VR Raghunath made no mistake from the spot to make the scoreline 3-0 in favour of the Indians. India could have scored another in the next minute but Rupinder's reverse hit from inside the 'D' was saved by the Oman custodian. Just a minute from the breather, India increased their lead through Rupinder who converted the team's fifth penalty corner with a high flick that crashed on to the top right of the Oman goal.

She gained a further measure of notoriety this month when her secondround victory over Marion Bartoli at Cincinnati was quickly followed by the French Wimbledon champion's abrupt retirement from the sport.

with assignments to play all three formats, Yuvraj feels that pacers like Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma should be rotated so that they remain free from injuries. "We have some good pace bowlers in Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma. Varun Aaron is also a good prospect. I believe that since we are playing in all three formats, these bowlers should be rotated and given enough rest." After opening another branch of the 'Yuvraj Singh Centre of Excellence', the stylish left-hander stressed on the importance of having state-of-the-art academy for the budding cricketers. "I didn't have all the modern facilities under one roof when I was training to become a cricketer. I would practise at one place, then head off to a gymnasium located at another part of the city and then go for a swimming session. Nowadays proper training is very important and kids should get the facilities under one roof."

NEW DELHI, August 24 (PtI): It may put India's return to the Olympic fold in jeopardy but the suspended IOA's general body meeting on Sunday is all set to ignore the IOC's directive to bar chargesheeted officials from contesting elections through constitutional amendments. The defiant move may put a spanner on the country's return to the Olympics but IOA officials have asserted that amendments to bar corruption-tainted officials cannot be carried out as Indian law permits chargesheeted persons to contest even Parliamentary elections. The IOC had on August 15 asked the IOA to amend its constitution incorporating the provisions to bar corruption- tainted persons from contesting elections proposed to be held next month. It had subsequently warned of further action if the amendSumo wrestlers perform during an exhibition titled "Sumo Tournament In Jakarta," at Istora stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia, ments were not carried Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013. The exhibition was held to mark the 40th anniversary of Japanese-ASEAN cooperation and the 55th out in Sunday's general anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Japan. led by Abhey Singh Chautala and Lalit Bhanot, who were elected president and secretary general in the December 5 last elections which were not recognised by the IOC, has remained defiant. The likes of Bhanot and VK Verma, who were chargesheeted in the 2010 Commonwealth Games scam along with former IOA chief Suresh Kalmadi, would not be able to contest elections if the antigraft amendments are incorporated. It is learnt that majority of the IOA officials are opposed to the amendments proposed by the IOC and Sunday's GBM may well turn out to be a mere forum where officials have a general discussion without taking any decision. "The general body is the highest decision making body of the IOA and it's competent to take whatever decision the House agrees to. As of now most of the members are not in favour of several provisions proposed by the IOC," a top IOA official said.

Somdev qualifies for US Open main draw

NEW yORK, August 24 (PtI): India's singles star Somdev Devvarman battled his way into the US Open main draw after defeating Briton James Ward in a gruelling three-setter. The sixth seeded Indian defeated his opponent 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in the qualifying third round, which lasted for two hours and 15 minutes. In the main draw, Somdev faces Slovakia's Lukas Lacko as his first round opponent. Lacko is placed 28 slots above Somdev in the ATP rankings at 85. It will be first meeting between the two players. If Somdev could clear the first hurdle he may find world number 21 Andreas Seppi of Italy as his second round rival. "Happy to be through to the main draw. So excited for next week!!," Somdev wrote on his twitter page after his match. Somdev converted both his break chances and saved three on his serve to win the first set in just 38 minutes. However, Ward clawed his way back into the match when he broke Somdev twice in the second set. Somdev too had his chances but squandered all four break points he had in the second set. In the fiercely fought decider, Somdev saved two break points and cashed in on two of the three chances to book a berth in the main draw. In the first three Grand Slams of the season, Somdev reached second rounds of Australian Open and French Open while he bowed out in the Qualifiers at Wimbledon.

At the time of writing, the petition has attracted nearly 10,000 signatures. Superman vs Batman is the sequel to Man of Steel and sees Henry Cavill returns as Superman. He told People magazine: ‘’I’m moved to tears quite a bit, I’m a big crier. Sometimes your kids say something and it’s so amazing with insight.

Nicole on finding happiness a decade after divorce from Tom Cruise

he admitted being crushed after her divorce from superstar Tom Cruise. But a decade later Nicole Kidman has found happiness. When asked by the Australian newspaper The Border Mail whether or not she was happy, the 46-year-old answered, ‘Yes. Happy in the sense that I have my girls and my husband and I have a very, very strong real life to counterbalance my fantasy life now.’ ‘My fantasy life used to outweigh that more and now I’ve kind of balanced it, which is a lot healthier,’ she said in the article published Wednesday. ‘I smile now!’ she added. She said she makes her work schedule revolve around her family life with country music star husband Keith Urban, who she married in 2006, and

their two young daughters. The Australian beauty met Tom on the set of the 1990 auto racing film Days of Thunder and a whirlwind romance ensued. The two got married on Christmas Eve in 1990 in Telluride, Colorado and adopted two children before they divorced in 2001. The Oscar winning actress opened up to the magazine while promoting her new movie Stoker that will be released in Australia at the end of this month. Nicole said she was drawn to the thriller by South Korean indie director Park Chan-wook because it seemed like a challenge. ‘In the second half of my life, I don’t want to succumb to any complacency,’ she said. ‘I want to push myself and keep pushing myself to places of discomfort and discovery. I am still very curious.’

Nicole said the director, who doesn’t speak any English, sought her out for the role. ‘He just said he wanted to make a film about bad blood. It sounded very Korean!,’ Nicole said. ‘How that is passed on through a family, whether that actually happens, nature versus nurture; all that was really fascinating to me,’ she added. The movie previously was screened in January at the Sundance Film Festival in Colorado and at the Glasgow Film Festival in February. Nicole is the mother of her two adopted children with Cruise and her two daughters Sunday and Faith with Keith.

Lewis takes pole at Belgian F1

Belgium, August 24 (ReuteRs): Lewis Hamilton snatched his fourth pole position in a row for Mercedes on Saturday with a last-gasp flying lap after a dramatic rain-hit qualifying session at the Belgian Formula One Grand Prix. The 2008 world champion, the last man across the line on a drying track after running the gamut of Spa's fickle weather, will be joined on the front row by Red Bull's championship leader Sebastian Vettel. Australian Mark Webber, preparing for the final Belgian Grand Prix of his career, qualified third for Red Bull with Mercedes' Nico Rosberg fourth. Ferrari's title contender Fernando Alonso could qual-

ify only ninth. Vettel is 38 points clear of Lotus's Kimi Raikkonen at the top of the standings with nine races remaining but Hamilton, a further 10 adrift, showed why many believe he is the German's biggest rival. The Briton had not figured in the top 10 in any of the three practice sessions and scraped into the final phase of qualifying in 10th place by just 0.21 of a second and with his hopes of success looking forlorn. Hamilton celebrated his 31st career pole with a wild whoop of delight over the radio and seemed as surprised as anyone after crossing the line with a fastest time of two minutes 01.012 seconds compared

to Vettel's 2:01.200. "I went wide in Turn One and my dashboard told me I was three seconds down and then it was four seconds and then six so I didn't know what was going on but I kept pushing," he told reporters at the post-qualifying news conference. "It's a blessing I am up here. Generally I feel comfortable in changing conditions. I can find the limit and I pushed through the middle sector and really caned it." Team principal Ross Brawn let out a sigh of relief. "We were just on the limit of being the last car. It did work out for us and with the track drying, Lewis did a great job. He really is settling in well to the team," he told the BBC.

Podolski double helps Gunners to victory lONDON, August 24 (AFP): Arsenal answered their critics in style on Saturday as a clinical display of finishing from Lukas Podolski saw them beat Fulham 3-1 at Craven Cottage in the Premier League. The German produced two classy strikes either side of the break to add to Olivier Giroud's opener as Arsene Wenger's side picked up their first points of the new Premier League campaign. It was the perfect end to a difficult week for the Gunners, who have recovered from their opening-day defeat by Aston Villa to record successive victories on the road. After their 3-0 win at Fenerbahce in Wednesday's Champions League play-off first leg, England midfielder Jack Wilshere was surprisingly named as a substitute by Wenger, with Tomas Rosicky drafted into a three-man midfield alongside Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla. Bacary Sagna started in central defence alongside captain Per Mertesacker in place of the suspended Laurent Koscielny, with Carl Jenkinson brought in at right-back. Fulham manager Martin Jol handed debuts to new signing Scott Parker after he completed his move from Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the week. Adel Taarabt was also given a chance to impress on the left flank, but Darren Bent had to settle for a place on the bench following his loan switch from Aston Villa. It has been a summer of change at Craven Cottage and new owner Shahid Khan was introduced to the home supporters before kick-off amid soggy conditions by the River Thames. The Pakistan-born businessman was given a rapturous welcome as Fulham looked

to build on last weekend's opening victory over Sunderland. A deluge of rain as the game kicked off made for a frenetic start and it was Arsenal who settled first, with an effort from Podolski being deflected wide for a corner. In the 10th minute, Theo Walcott served further warning when he beat the offside trap to collect Rosicky's pass, but David Stockdale in the Fulham goal reacted quickly to block his shot. More pressure in the 14th minute saw John Arne Riise make a last-ditch clearance with his head, but Arsenal kept possession and worked the ball to Ramsey. His shot from distance lacked power, but it struck Giroud on the heel and fell perfectly for the Frenchman to finish coolly. Fulham's response was almost instant as Taarabt forced Wojciech Szczesny into a smart save and the goalkeeper also did well to deny Damien Duff at the second attempt. Left-back Sascha Riether almost created a chance to equalise seven minutes before the break, but Mertesacker's outstretched left foot denied Fulham. From the break, Walcott set up Kieran Gibbs but the defender could not follow his goal in Turkey on Wednesday as he dragged wide. Once again, though, that was only a warning of what was to come as another quick break saw Stockdale save well from Walcott and the ball fell for Podolski to hammer into the unguarded net four minutes before the interval. Fulham had reason to feel hard done-by and they began the second half with real purpose, with Taarabt forcing Szczesny into a smart save at his near post.
