Breakthrough in taxi drivers’ murder Morung Express News Dimapur | August 24

Dimapur police have made a major breakthrough in the mystery surrounding the murder of two taxi drivers this year. On March 21, 2013, a taxi driver, identified as Masukuddin alias Saddam, was found shot dead in Medziphema, and the taxi missing. On May 18, another taxi driver was reported missing along with the vehicle. Investigation into the case had almost reached a dead end until the chance recovery of a stolen car emerged, five months into investigation. SDPO, Dimapur, Relo T.

Aye briefing the media on the breakthrough said that on August 14, Government Railway Police Station personnel recovered a stolen car from the railway parking lot. It emerged that this was the same car which used to be driven by the deceased Masukuddin before being murdered. This lead led to the arrest of a 24 yearold man, who admitted to committing the crime. The accused, identified as Kaikholen Sitlou alias Akila, son of Chungminthang, from Sirhima village, was arrested on August 18 from Paipijang village. Sitlou admitted his involvement in the abduction

and killing of Masukuddin and also in the other case, which was reported on May 18, the SDPO said. He led police to the spot where he, along with two unidentified accomplices, had killed the driver of the taxi, which was reported missing on May 18. The remains of the missing driver, identified as Md. Fakruddin, were recovered on August 19. He is reported to have been shot. According to Sitlou’s confessional statement, his two accomplices carried out the abductions and murders. On both occasions, they hired the taxis with the intention of stealing the cars. The cars were sold for

Rs. 80, 000 each. The first car was sold in Dimapur while the second one was taken to Manipur. Police are in the process of tracking the second car. Sitlou told interrogators that he and his accomplices are cadres of the GPRN/ NSCN. The whereabouts of the two accomplices are unknown. Police are also not ruling out the possible involvement of the same group in connection with the death of two autorickshaw drivers, whose bodies were recovered from Medziphema in late 2012. Sitlou however denied involvement in those two cases, the SDPO added.

New Delhi, August 24 (Pti): Advising media to exercise caution, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said the spirit of inquiry must not morph into a “campaign of calumny” and “witch-hunt” is no substitute for investigative journalism. Sharing the dais with Singh at the inauguration of Rs. 60 crore National Media Centre in New Delhi, Congress President Sonia Gandhi also said, “At times the language and dignity of media discussion can be found wanting. Sometimes I, too, have to confess that the media makes the political establishment uncomfortable.” Maintaining that the media is not merely a mirror of business activity, Singh said it is a reflection of the entire society. While reflecting the process of great societal changes brought out by the economic reform and liberalisation, the media has also been affected by these changes, he said. “Change inevitably brings challenge in its wake. Those of you, who are the practitioners of media industry have a special responsibility to assess, tackle and overcome the challenges that two decades of socio-economic changes have brought about,” the Prime Minister said. He said in a vibrant democracy like

India, which revels in free enquiry and quest for answers, this is a significant calling. “But there is need for caution while executing this responsibility. A spirit of inquiry must not morph into a campaign of calumny. A witch-hunt is no substitute for investigative journalism. And personal prejudices must not replace the public good,” Singh said. The Prime Minister said that at the end of the day, “credibility is the media’s currency” and is integral to its contract with the reader or viewer. “There is also the question of a certain responsibility for social harmony and public order. I emphasise this particularly in the light of the social media revolution, which is rendering irrelevant the lines between a connected citizen and professional journalist. “A mature and wise handling of this phenomenon is essential if we are to avoid the tragedy last year that befell many innocent souls who became victims of an online propaganda campaign and were then driven across the country to save their lives in their home states,” Singh said. While noting that journalism cannot be divorced from the business of which it is a part, the Prime Minister said that the responsibility of the media organ-

isations is not limited to the viewers and readers alone as the companies also have an obligation to their investors and shareholders. “The tussle between bottom-lines and headlines is a fact of life for them,” he said but at the same time added “this should not result in a situation where media organisations lose sight of their primary directive, which is to hold up a mirror to society and help provide a corrective.” Sonia Gandhi said that the media has a tremendous, almost larger than life impact on our lives and “this imposes great responsibility”. Both Singh and Gandhi also lauded the media’s watchdog role. The Prime Minister also reiterated UPA’s commitment to “fostering a free, pluralistic and independent media”. Gandhi said, “We welcome the watchdog role of the media and well founded and well intentioned criticism of our policies and programmes. We recognise that there could be shortcomings that need to be highlighted.” “Our media has evolved over the years into a vibrant and mature institution that cherishes its freedom and independence and exercises it with a sense of commendable responsibility at least most of the time,” she said.

Rengma Nagas reach out to Ahoms the nPsc test Begins Morung Express News Dimapur | August 24

In order to strengthen the demand for a Rengma Hills Autonomous District Council (RHADC), the Rengma people have reached out to the Ahom people for support. The Rengma Naga Peoples’ Council invited some members of the Ahom Royal Society (ARS) to Dimapur today to reiterate this demand. “The Rengma Nagas are indigenous people, schedule tribe and sons of the soil, living in peaceful coexistence with Ahoms, Assamese including Karbis from time immemorial,” said A.J. Rengma, President of the Rengma Hills Autonomous District Demanding Committee (RHADDC) at the meeting held at Bookmarc conference hall here today. “We are not immigrants but we are a minor-

“We have all rights but we are suppressed”

ity; we have all rights but we are suppressed,” asserted A.J. Rengma in the backdrop of the current violence that affected some people of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council in Assam. According to A.J. Rengma, since majority rules in a democracy, it is essential for the minority Rengma people of Assam to ally with the majority. The visiting Ahoms were asked, in this regard, to treat the Rengma people as their “brothers and sisters” to “deliver us from our present situation.” The Rengma people in Assam have marginal political representation, and the region remains largely without any sign of development.

Stating that the sixth schedule of the Constitution of India provides for creation of more autonomous regions, the request was put forward for the creation of the RHADC immediately “in the interest of all sections of the community who are living in the said territory,” said A.J. Rengma. “Resource sharing and control remains a problem among the indigenous communities of Assam—much is controlled by Multi National Companies,” maintained C. Gogoi of the ARS at the meeting. “Therefore people continue to fight amongst themselves.” The ARS had earlier submitted a memorandum to the Chief Min-

ister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, to consider having a representative each from all ethnic groups in Assam to its Legislative Council (Upper House). The support they are lending to the Rengma people, in essence, is out of their “concern for the indigenous people who were part of medieval Assam,” and because “we understand the Rengma position.” The ARS is based out of Sibsagar and Jorhat in Assam, and was represented by Kamala Rajkunwar, C. Gogoi, Bipin Handique and Dr. J. Hazarika today. The Rengma Student’s Union, Rengma Naga Hoho Dimapur, Rengma Hoho, RHADDC office bearers, Rengma region GBs, Village Council Chairman Forum of Rengmas and Rengma public leaders were present at the initial stage meet.
