BBC journalists and staff, some with black tape over their mouths to illustrate the silencing of free speech and journalists around the world, hold a minute of silence in support of the jailed journalists in Egypt, outside the BBC headquarters in central London, Tuesday, June 24, 2014. An Egyptian court on Monday convicted three journalists from Al-Jazeera English and sentenced them to seven years in prison, each on terrorism-related charges, bringing widespread criticism that the verdict was a blow to freedom of expression. The three, Australian Peter Greste, Canadian-Egyptian Mohamed Fahmy and Egyptian Baher Mohammed, have been detained since December charged with supporting the Muslim Brotherhood, which has been declared a terrorist organization, and of fabricating footage to undermine Egypt’s national security and make it appear the country was facing civil war. along with their party supporters with the BJP, Nagaland could be issued by Wednesday. Sazo disclosed that he received documents from the three MLAs with their party resolutions and Nagaland BJP’s acceptance resolution of the merger on June 16. “But I sought some more additional documents from them to furnish whether there was any resolution of the NCP national political party deciding to merge their party with the BJP or any authorization to the state unit of NCP to take any decision in this regard. At the same time, whether there was any resolution of the BJP national political

party accepting merger of the NCP with BJP” he said. “Because this is a constitutional matter and I need to thoroughly examine by consulting legal and constitutional experts before any official notification with regard to the merger claim is issued from my office,” Sazo explained. “At the same time, I also have to listen to the views and counter views expressed by the parties concerned to the present development following the three NCP MLAs’ merger claim with the BJP.” The Speaker did not specify an exact date on which the official notification would be issued.

Barely a day after the NPF central office dissolved its Mokokchung division on June 23, two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) exploded simultaneously inside the NPF Mokokchung Division office, Sangtemla Ward, Mokokchung at around 12:30 AM this morning. There were no casualties. The explosions occurred at two different rooms which were completely destroyed. The NPF office is located just a walking distance from the official residences of the Mokokchung Superintendent of Police and Deputy Commissioner, and the area is considered as a high security zone. The residence of the Commandant of the 31 Assam Rifles is also located in the same neighborhood. Mokokchung police informed that investigation into the matter is ongoing but that no one has been arrested so far. It may be noted that voices of dissatisfaction have been doing rounds in the NPF Mokokchung division ever since two Ministers – Imkong L Imchen and Merentoshi R Jamir – were not included in the new DAN Government. NPF Mkg President condemns Meanwhile, the ‘president’ of the NPF Mokokchung Division, Imtiyanger through a press release, strongly condemned the twin explosions at its party office and termed it as dangerous and callous action. He urged anyone with any information on the incident to give it to the police to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. While expressing outrage

imchen terms dissolution of nPf Mkg as ‘most extreme’

DIMAPUR, JUNE 24 (MExN): MLA Imkong L Imchen today stated that the dissolution of the NPF Mokokchung division was “totally uncalled for.” Imchen, in a press note, stated that there are other punitive measures in the hands of the central party leadership but dissolution of the divisional office is the “most extreme.” He said that the Mokokchung NPF division under its President, Imtiyanger has been “rendering excellent service for the foundation of party in the district, despite having so many unspoken constraints.” He asserted that the division has “committed no anti-party activities whatsoever at any point of time.” “If the NPF Mokokchung division has spoken their anguish on the issue of drop-

ping myself and Merentoshi from the cabinet, it does not amount to committing antiparty activities, just that they have spoken the truth,” stated the MLA from Koridang A/C. Terming the move of the NPF central leadership as “very painful and regrettable,” Imchen stated that to establish a political party “is not a matter of joke and never an easy task.” He noted that the NPF Mokokchung division is the biggest division in the state having ten assembly constituencies, “with diverse political situation and environment.” “They have overcome all these obstacles and successfully put the NPF party on solid ground firmly. I can only hope that this should not be the beginning of disintegration and dismantling of the NPF party itself,” he added.

and anguish at the incident, Imtiyanger said there can be no justification for the perpetration of these activities. “If those behind them actually have a goal and a strategy then they should test it by putting it before the people. The people behind this action are opposed to the democratic will of the people and want to drag us back to the past,” he added. Stating that the perpetrators have no respect for the party workers, the party, the wider community or the future, Imtiyanger said that those behind this futile action should reflect on the possible ramifications and the number of people they are putting at risk. “At this juncture, when

the Division is going through a difficult phase, this cowardly action of the culprits has made a dent to the image of the division,” said Imtiyanger. Imchen calls for early arrest of culprits MLA Imkong L Imchen also condemned the blast at the NPF Mokokchung office building on June 23 and called upon law enforcing agencies to apprehend the culprit at the earliest. “The incident took place when I was here in Mokokchung and as such their motive behind the incident was obviously to malign my image,” he stated. Imchen appealed to “all such elements in society to desist from committing such crimes in our land.”

nPGs urged to heed to ‘people’s voices’

DIMAPUR, JUNE 24 (MExN): The All Commercial Vehicle Association (ACVA), Wokha district has asserted that the collection of tax by Naga Political Groups “cannot be allowed to jeopardize the basic rights of the common people in Nagaland.” A press note from the ACVA, Wokha President, Y Bankathung Lotha and General Secretary, Renbi Ngullie informed that the association held a meeting on June 22 with regard to “circulation of a demand note/yearly vehicle tax served to all the commercial vehicle sub unions in Wokha district by the Lotha Region NSCN/GPRN (K).” The ACVA stated that the note was signed by “David Lotha Leacy, Wokha Region Finance and Starson Kilonser, Trade and Commerce Revenue NSCN/ GPRN (K).” The “demand note,” a scanned copy of which was made available to the media, had asked the ACVA to “contribute annual tax for the fi-

nal year 2014-2015 along with 20132014.” The note, dated June 14, directed that the “contribution” be made on or before June 17. It further cautioned: “If you do not pay the entire percent amount, this time your transportation should be closed by the said government.” The ACVA stated that the note “has been given to all commercial vehicles.” The association expressed its “displeasure” that “instead of listening to the voice and cry of the people, the rampant collection of tax has become a daily practice by the NPGs.” It reiterated that the rampant collection of tax would “do more harm to the common people in Nagaland; especially business establishments” and would force commercial vehicles into bankruptcy. It said that such actions would only serve to “worsen and alienate NPGs from the people of Nagaland.” The ACVA, Wokha district stated that “respect and security for the peo-

ple in Nagaland should be their concern.” It reminded that the NSCN (K) had earlier also “threatened ACVA Wokha district to ban the Wokha commercial vehicles.” However, it stated that the ACVA Wokha had resolved to view this as a “direct challenge to the public of Wokha district in particular and to the Nagas in general.” Maintaining that the association is not against the NPGs, it however tabled objections to the “policies of much collection of tax.” It reaffirmed the association’s decision to “wholeheartedly support ACAUT in letter and in spirit in its fight for One Government One Tax, in order to maintain good governance in the larger interest of the people of Nagaland.” Meanwhile, with regard to the May 20 incident at Doyang DHEP area, the ACVA Wokha district requested the concerned authority to note that the “word donating will be read as collecting” in the third paragraph of the FIR.

Ten apex tribe Hohos today resolved to stand by the Nagaland Foothill Road Coordination Committee (NFHRCC). The apex tribal forums of the Chang, Khiamniungan, Sangtam, Yimchunger, Konyak, Phom, Lotha, Sema, Ao and Rengma while unanimously resolving to extend solidarity and support the foothill road movement have sought the expeditious completion of the much needed road. With the Nagaland state government yet to respond to the NFHRCC ultima-

tum served on June 18, the NFHRCC convened a joint meeting of the ten tribe hohos on June 24 at the Town Hall, Dimapur to deliberate on further course of action in the event the government fails to respond. The stipulated seven-day deadline expires on June 25. The NFHRCC, in the ultimatum, had demanded the cancellation of fresh work order recently awarded by the PWD (Road & Bridges) and that the work be allotted to contractors recommended by the committee. At the meeting today, a three-point resolution was adopted by

the NFHRCC and the ten tribe Hohos. The second of the three resolutions cautioned that the ten Hohos would “impose total bandh in Dimapur if no positive response from the state government is forthcoming”

bent PWD Minister “in the event the government fails to respond to the first phase of the agitation.” According to the NFHRCC, the bandh would be the first phase of agitation. In point number one of the resolutions, the ten tribes affirmed to not allow diversion of fund allocated for the foothill road project in any manner whatsoever. Dimapur-based frontal women and student organisations of the ten tribes, along with the Eastern Nagaland People’s Union Dimapur also extended cooperation and support to the NFHRCC. The NFHRCC

Threatens to impose bandh if no positive response from Nagaland state government within the stipulated sevenday period. A date for the proposed bandh is yet to be decided. The third resolution stated that the NFHRCC would be compelled to demand the removal of the incum-

had also invited legislators from the ten tribes to attend the day’s conclave. Out of the 46 MLAs from the ten tribes, only one could attend. It was disclosed in the meeting today that the NFHRCC was informed that 45 of them could not attend owing to official engagements in Kohima. MLA SI Jamir, the lone MLA who attended the meeting, statedthathewould discuss the matter with his Assembly colleagues and expressed dismay at the way the PWD (R&B) has handled the allotment of work contract. “I can’t bring myself to understand why the contract was awarded to contractors not recommended by the NFHRCCC,” said Jamir.
