CCSU supports demand to cancel 29 appointments
C M Y K
TUENSANG, MAY 25 (MExN): The Confederation of Chang Students’ Union (CCSU) has extended support to demands made by the Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) for cancellation of twenty nine appointments made through a notice dated February 27, 2014. The ENSF had stated that the said appointments were at odds with an earlier government notification, dated August 30, 2011. The CCSU, in a press note, stated that it has taken serious note of the “present practice by concerned authorities of appointing through backdoor.” It stated that this practice has hampered and deprived deserving educated candidates. “Moreover, we the backward tribes are totally deprived of the Fundamental Right to Equal Opportunity in Government service, when we are fighting tooth and nail for our due shares,” the CCSU stated. Expressing strong resentment over the issue, the CCSU demanded that the concerned order be cancelled and that the ENSF’s demands be met, in order to avoid further confrontations and complications.

NE people to light candles for Modi
GUwAhATI, MAY 25 (IANS): People from the North East of India will light candles in their homes and offices across the country to show their respect for Narendra Modi as he takes oath as India’s new prime minister Monday. Mohen Naorem, a filmmaker from Manipur, has launched an initiative called “MODIfied Northeast India” and has appealed to all northeastern communities living across the country and other parts of the world to light candles at 6 p.m. Monday when Modi takes oath of office at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
He said the forum will try to bridge the gap between the northeast and the other parts of the country and will prepare a vision document for the region for the prime minister. More than 10,000 volunteers across various cities will take part in the event, he said. He said the motive was to celebrate and “welcome the good days that are coming”. “We are going to send those to the prime minister. We want to make sure that the prime minister ushers in development in the northeastern states on the lines of Gujarat,” he added.
tion,” he said. “We are an ally of the NDA, power is not important, national development is important. Both in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana there are problems. Under his (Modi’s) leadership, we want a solution to these problems,” Naidu told TV news channel CNN IBN. However, TDP sources in Hyderabad said Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju is likely to be the lone face from the TDP to be inducted into the union cabinet Monday. This was believed to have been decided at the meeting Naidu had with Modi. Ally Shiv Sena, however, said it expected “proper” representation
in the cabinet. “Shiv Sena is expecting good positions in the central government. The BJP has assured us that would happen,” said senior Sena leader Subhash Desai. “We are confident. We are not at all bothered or worried about Shiv Sena not getting a proper share,” Desai said. Sources said the Apna Dal, which won two seats in Uttar Pradesh, is also trying to find a place in the new cabinet. Rajnath Singh, meanwhile, met several party leaders, including Maneka Gandhi, Udit Raj, and Vijay Goel as well as Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh leader Suresh Soni during the day.
nMA condemns violence against ne people DIMAPUR, MAY 25 (MExN): The Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) has condemned the assault and molestation of a Naga woman by a Lawyer in North Delhi on May 22. The NMA further expressed shock at the assault on leaders of the Naga Students Union Delhi by a group of Lawyers at Tis Haz-
are Court, New Delhi on May 23. A press note from the NMA stated that “such misconduct and violent behaviour by the Lawyers in the Court room, with verbal abuse and physical assault and not allowing the victim to present her case is a total violation of constitutional rights.”
It added that the incident “exposes the extreme lack of safety for women in the country.” Expressing concern over the increasing incidents of violence against people, particularly women, from the North East, the NMA demanded that proper action be taken against the culprits.
Entrepreneurship is considered a key driver for economic development, a strategic development intervention for accelerating rural development process and a means for improving the quality of life. Many governments and leaders around the world now emphasize on creating enabling environments for entrepreneurship to transform their economies. As Nagaland embarks on a new journey under new leadership in the state and the center, with the people anticipating positive change, it is perhaps important for policy-makers to reexplore what is really fueling transformation and growth in other parts of the world. Our Government is a facilitating body—not a business owner – responsible for creating an enabling environment to stimulate and engage its citizens and entrepreneurs to be productive. We need an entrepreneurial revolution that benefits all. The real success stories of enterprise-building in Nagaland have been achieved only by the non-local business community who now control and manage the trade routes, supply and retail distribution chains of almost all commodities and services of the state. It is commendable that because of their entrepreneurial activities our needs have been serviced so far. Perhaps a time has now come to create a win-win environment with conscious, well-planned policies that will enable rural citizens and entrepreneurs to learn from the business forerunners operating in our region and engage as active participants in the profit-generating ac-
tivities in our own state and the country. In a recent interaction with a non-Naga owner of a large business unit supplying essential commodities that penetrates all districts of Nagaland, he said, “I was born here, it’s been over 50 years that we’ve built this successful business in Nagaland.” Most of us are still stuck with the traditional mindset of dependence on government jobs. However, at this age and time of technological revolution, it is self-defeating, retrograde thinking and unsustainable for us to continue banking on government jobs—which undeniably, also unlock the access to sources of capital more than salary, for many. “How to Start an Entrepreneurial Revolution”, a Harvard Business Review article by Daniel J. Isenberg, Professor of Entrepreneurship Practice, Babson Executive Education and founder of Babson Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Project, highlights the example of Rwanda’s national agenda of entrepreneurship promotion. Rwanda is also called “The land of a thousand hills”; with three ethnic groups and Christianity as their largest religion. It is a landlocked east African country recovering from the genocidal mass slaughter of an estimated 1 million people in 1994. The economy is largely based on agriculture with coffee and tea as main sources of foreign exchange. Post violence and turmoil, a great success story has emerged with their “National Coffee Strategy” for Rwandan Bourbon Specialty Coffee Brand, bought by major businesses such as Costco and Starbucks spurring economic growth and hope.
The HBR article points out that “to ignite venture and growth, governments need to create an ecosystem that sustains entrepreneurs.” Many governments’ venture-creation initiatives fail because their efforts are wasted on creating another Silicon Valley. Isenberg gives nine key principles for leaders to “jump-start the growth of an entrepreneurial ecosystem: 1. Stop Emulating Silicon Valley 2. Shape the Ecosystem Around Local Conditions 3. Engage the Private Sector from the Start 4. Favor the High Potentials 5. Get a Big Win on the Board: ‘one success can have a surprisingly stimulating effect on entrepreneurship ecosystem … Over celebrate the successes. Governments should be bold about celebrating thriving entrepreneurial ventures; media events, highly publicized awards, and touts in government literature, speeches, and interviews all have an impact.’6. Tackle Cultural Change Head-On 7. Stress the roots: ‘…meting our money carefully so that entrepreneurs develop toughness and resourcefulness.’ 8. Don’t Overengineer Clusters; help them grow organically 9. Reform Legal, Bureaucratic and Regulatory Frameworks.” Isenberg agrees that raising capital, access to talent and overcoming bureaucracy are three of the top challenges entrepreneurs attribute to their environments. He falsifies the belief that there should be more and more start-ups to build a strong entrepreneurship ecosystem, and states that “many stakeholders must benefit in order for an entrepreneurship ecosystem to be self-sustaining.”

The TUD gave this statement after an emergency meeting held on May 25. “The ugly incident occurred, without any provocation whatsoever, when the said leaders were proceeding towards Dokoi village after having learnt about the killing of a fellow Chakhesang of Dikoi village earlier during the day,” informed the TUD, according to which, the said leaders came across the SDO(C), Dimapur, before entering Aoyimkum village, “who was apparently on duty there alongwith the some IRB personnel.” The leaders, stated the TUD, proceeded only after being told by the official that the road to Dikoi village is “open and clear,” but found the road blocked with “trees trunks and
boulders and many people, armed with ‘lathis’ and other lethal weapons.” The TUD stated that the said mob surrounded them “despite having disclosed their identities and purpose of their journey in clear terms,” and physically assaulted the president of WSH and damaged vehicles by “pelting stones and using ‘lathis’.” The president of WSH sustained cut injuries on his head and blunt injuries on his legs and back of his body as a result of this, it was informed, as also that he is presently undergoing medical treatment at the District Hospital, Dimapur. “Even as the President, TUD tried to intervene and pacify the mob, he was not only pushed and manhandled but was verbally abused by the mob. The entire incident took place within close range from where the IRB personnel were stationed but they did not bother to intervene and save the said leaders,” noted the TUD. A representation was sent to the District Administration, Dimapur to immediately act by removing the said blockade so as to prevent further deterioration of law and order problem.
