‘Challenge the structures of violence’ Our Correspondent Kohima | November 25
“It should be a grave concern for us all that in spite of such campaigns being carried out for the last 22 years worldwide through various resolutions adopted by the United Nations, violence against women has continued unabated,” said Temsula Ao, Chairperson, Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) during the fortnight observation on elimination of violence against women on November 25 -the International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women. The theme for the campaign is, ‘From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Let’s Challenge Militarism and End Violence against Women.’ “When women’s rights are made secondary, it
limits the scope of government’s responsibility to protect their rights,” said Ayo Jajo Aier, who also emphasized on the need to challenge the structures of violence that patriarchy creates. K. Elias further affirmed on the need for women to inherit property and also to joined forces together to repeal AFSPA which has committed violence against women. “It may be true that tackling and solving violence against women will take considerable efforts and time, nonetheless, a beginning has to be made,” said Pukhayi. He further mentioned that Nagaland has a low rate of cases of violence against women and Nagaland Government is the only state in the Northeast to have a separate department for women development. However he reminded that Nagas should not remain silent and complacent because of the figure and that Nagaland must strive to attain zero figure violence against women and girls.

Congress to start agitation kOhIMA, NOVEMBER 25 (MExN): An emergency meeting of the executive committee members of NPCC, MLAs, frontal chiefs and DCC presidents today decided to stage a sit-in dharna on November 29 in front of Nagaland Civil Secretariat from 10:00 AM onwards. NPCC President S.I. Jamir in a press conference said the dharna is in protest against the non-removal of the charge sheeted Imkong L. Imchen, Medical Minister. As far as NPCC’s declaration of boycotting the 50th anniversary of Nagaland statehood is concerned, Jamir said that there has been pressure from friends and well wishers to re-consider it. As such, he said the matter will be decided after November 29. “By first week of December we are planning to have bandh,” he said, and informed that the bandh will start from Kohima and Dimapur. Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Tokheho said that November 26 is the last date for the government to take action and added that failure to do so would force NPCC to start a poster campaign, followed by dharna on November 29. He informed that there will also be a bandh on December 3, which will be held district wise. He said the bandh will be in a few districts, which are yet to be decided.

In a joint collaboration, the Action Committee Against Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) and Facebook Group The Naga Blog (TNB), along with relatives of New Shena Village GB Kiho H. Sumi, have submitted a petition today to the Chief Minister of Nagaland’s office through Lalthara, advisor to the Government of Nagaland, for justice to Kiho who was assaulted by three GPRN/NSCN cadres on November 16 for “questioning the illegal collection of tax by the cadres.” The Chief Secretary, Alemtemshi Jamir, and the Governor’s office were also presented with the petition, which was signed by 2683 people from Nagaland, including 1783 through TNB. With the GPRN/NSCN terminating the three cadres from “active and primary membership” (Inaho, 2nd Lieutenant) and “active national service” (Hosheto, Khapur and Toiho, RSI) respectively, ACAUT and TNB, in their petition, have demanded the accused be “arrested and booked under relevant sections of the IPC and CrPc.” At the same time, a request has been made to the CFMC and CFSB “not to allow cadres guilty of criminal conduct or involved in heinous crimes
ACAUT appeals to NSCN (K) to listen to ‘people’s voice’ DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 25 (MExN): The ACAUT alleged today that “the NSCN (K), Sumi Region has started collecting tax for the year 2014-15, that is, in advance from the business community of Zuhneboto town.” This, the ACAUT termed in a press release from its media cell, is “illogical and at the same time illegal.” “No individuals in any of the NPGs, however high, should be allowed to besmirch the good name of the organisations by stooping so low. The ACAUT sincerely prays that this shameful behaviour is stopped herewith and appeals to the NSCN (K) higher ups to listen to the voice of the people.”
or dismissed cadres to join other factions upon being released after undergoing sentence or upon being dismissed.” Further, the ACAUT and TNB noted that “the socalled understanding arrived between Sumi Kukami Hoho (SKH) and GPRN/ NSCN on this issue is a totally different matter which should not impede the government from acting upon our demand as the victim has already filed an FIR in Zunheboto Police Station.” The Chief Secretary has reported to have told the joint team that he will apprise the Chief Minister of the matter on November 26. Meanwhile, speaking to media persons at his residence, KK Sema opined that circumstances leading to the petition are not because of a single issue. This action by the ACAUT and TNB, said
Sema, is a first of its kind rising from the mandate of the common people against the atrocities committed by the national workers. He related that ACAUT is a body that aimed for economic reconciliation amongst the national groups with their policy of one tax. They, he said, stand against unabated taxation by the various factions, similar to the FNR that is working and pressing for political reconciliation among the factions. Sema pointed out that the petition was in line with the philosophy of ACAUT as the crime was committed by the three accused in relation to taxation. Stating that the assault on a person holding the post of a GB is a serious issue, he termed the incident a “wake-up call” for authorities in the district administration to book culprits under criminal law.

Reviving Naga identity through tattoos
KoHima, November 25 (mexN): A large number of culture and tattoo enthusiasts gathered to witness Mo Naga’s initiative to protect, revive and promote the tribal tattoos of the North-East in Kohima. The three day educational seminar cum workshop – ‘Tattoos and Art Culture of the Nagas’ organized from November 21 to 23 saw various tattoo and art connoisseurs share their experiences. On day one of the seminar, founder of Headhunter’s Ink, Mo Naga discussed the misinterpretations associated with symbols used by the age old tribal communities and their signature tribal tattoos. Mo Naga disclosed his first research based Naga symbol and the logo for Headhunters’ Ink – the protector’s eye or the evil eye; a concept which can be found in numerous
cultures of the world. He explained that it is a symbol which is marked on a person or any structure as a mark of protection from evil curses sent through the eyes. “At present the Turkish evil eye, the Egyptian evil eye or the Eye of Horus is well known across the world. Even in India the Bindi is a mark of protection similar to this concept,” revealed a press note During his trip to the interiors of Nagaland, Mo Naga found that the very same concept prevalent among certain tribes of Nagaland and the Apatani tribe of Arunachal Pradesh. He revealed that the symbol of the Naga’s protector’s eye or the third eye was tattooed on women’s forehead by many tribes in and around the Tuensang district for protection in this life as well as the afterlife. It was informed that
the symbol is still used by many tribes in Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal etc. woven into their shawls and as accessories. “This symbol is a new addition to the world of art and design, and most importantly to the evil eye collection of the world. As a community we should be proud about this contribution. I am confident that this symbol is going to take the world of art and design by storm,” stated Mo Naga. He lamented that “Most of our ancestor’s beliefs and stories are hidden away and lost this way. “Knowing that art and culture is the base of our identity, such discoveries and unveiling of the truth will go a long way in strengthening our Naga identity,” he asserted. As such, he called upon people to support this endeavor to “preserve, protect and pro-

The Free Voice award is given every year in recognition of the work of a writer who has made a significant contribution to his/her literature and society. The recognition received by her has brought pride and honour not just to the Nagas but also to avid literature enthusiasts all over the world, especially providing the much needed
inspiration and impetus to free-voice struggles across the globe. Easterine Kire’s work has been lauded as the first Naga poet to be published in English, and also the first Naga novelist to be published in English. The Palma de Mallorca newspapers underlined that her writings had put Naga literature on the world map. Kire uses English but
injects the texture and flavour of her own mother tongue, Tenyidie into her fictional narrative. It is a strong example of “the empire writing back.” In the buildup to the award event, Kire’s poems were performed to packed rooms with very responsive audiences in different places in Europe including Barcelona and Agramunt. The political suppression of linguistic rights accompanied by the suppression of the Catalan people to govern themselves is highly similar to the struggle of the Naga people. In her acceptance speech, Kire thanked the Catalan PEN and said the award gave recognition and visibility not only to her work alone, but to the Naga people as a whole. She said it was an inspiration for her to continue voicing the narratives silenced by History. general secretary 82% turnout in Mizoram poll GNLA arrested in Meghalaya
AizAwl, November 25 (iANS) Balloting to elect a new government in the northeastern border state of Mizoram ended peacefully Monday, with around 82 percent of voters exercising their franchise, officials said. "Over 81 percent of the total 690,860 voters cast their ballot across the state," said Mawia, the joint chief electoral officer of Mizoram. In the last assembly elections of December 2008, the polling percentage was 80.02 percent. The voting percentage of men voters was 78.77 percent while 81.24 percent women cast their votes last time. According to the election officials, this time also the percentage of votes cast by women voters was expected to be higher than men. "Voting passed off peacefully, with not even a small incident reported from anywhere in the state," an official told IANS over phone. Long lines formed in front of polling booths even before the 7 a.m. opening time of the polling process, and many voters were seen waiting in queues to cast their votes even after the scheduled closing time of 4 p.m. The ballots will be counted Dec 9. This poll will decide the fate of 142 candidates, including six women and many independents. Political parties also expressed their happiness over the heavy turnout of voters and peaceful elections. At some of the polling stations, technical trouble with electronic voting machines (EVM) disrupted the process for brief periods. The main poll battle is between
the ruling Congress and opposition coalition Mizoram Democratic Alliance, comprising Mizo National Front (MNF), Mizoram People's Conference and Maraland Democratic Front, all regional and local parties. The Bharatiya Janata Party, which has little base in the state, Zoram Nationalist Party and the Nationalist Congress Party are also separately contesting the state elections, fielding candidates in many seats. Of the 40 assembly seats, 39 are reserved for tribals. One seat is for the general category. With a population of 10.91 lakh, Mizoram is the only state in India where women voters outnumber men by 9,806 in the total of 690,860. In all, there are 350,333 women voters against 340,527 males. Altogether 1,126 polling stations were set up across the state to hold the elections. Mizoram shares borders with Myanmar (404 km) and Bangladesh (318 km). A newly-designed device -- VoterVerified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) which confirms to a voter that his or her vote was cast as wished -- was "used in 10 of the 40 assembly segments of Mizoram", an election official said. This is the first time that this device has been used in any general election in the country. Even though there is no major security threat from separatist outfits and Mizoram remained peaceful during the month-long electioneering, around 7,000 para-military, state and other security personnel were

Security forces gunned down four kidnappers in the ensuing gun battle. Police recovered one carbine, one pistol and two hand grenades from the dead men. "We will send the Meghalaya official to his relatives," the police official said. Medhi along with his peon was kidnapped by the RNLF rebel group Nov 14 from Chotomatia area, bordering Assam's Goalpara district and Meghalaya's North Garo Hills district, when he was going to Guwahati to meet his family. The rebels had released the peon. The RNLF rebel group operates largely in the Rabha tribe-inhabited areas of Assam's Goalpara district, and certain areas of Meghalaya's North Garo Hills districts. Earlier, Medhi's family appealed to the kidnappers for his release.
deployed to ensure free and fair polls in the state. Christian- and tribal-dominated Mizoram witnessed peaceful campaigning under the close watch of the powerful church-controlled Mizoram People's Forum (MPF), a non-government election watchdog. Mizoram Police chief Amulya Patnaik said that during the campaigning, not a single untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the state. Monday's vote will decide the political fortune of Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, his eleven cabinet colleagues, Mizoram Women's Congress chief Tlangthanmawii and former chief minister and MNF president Zoramthanga. Lal Thanhawla, also state Congress chief, is contesting from two constituencies -Serchhip, his home turf, and neighbouring Hrangturzo - and opposition MNF chief Zoramthanga is trying his electoral fortunes from Tuipui East, bordering Myanmar. The Mizoram poll was earlier scheduled for Dec 4 and the counting of votes was scheduled for Dec 8. But the ECI rescheduled the dates following the request of the church and the local political parties to allow the voters to go to church Sunday and to celebrate a local festival. During the last assembly elections of December 2008, the Congress won 32 seats, the MNF three and the MDF one. The MPC and ZNP got two seats each. The MNF, which ruled the state for 10 years till 2008, is the principal opposition party.
Border villages vie for unity
SAriNg (mokokchuNg), November 25 (mexN): Continuing in its effort to maintain peaceful co-existence in the AssamNagaland border, the Border Peace Coordination Committee (Assam-Nagaland) made a goodwill visit to Saring village, Mokokchung on November 25. Following the unfortunate May 23 incident earlier this year, which strained relations between communities living along the border, the BPCC (A-N) embarked on a mission to restore normalcy in Naganijan Tea Estate, Saring and its surrounding area. A press release from Er. Temsu Wathi Ao, District Informatics Officer, NIC, Mokokchung, stated that Monday’s meeting was a follow up of a similar meeting held at Naganijan on November 8. Er. Ao, who

Bora, president of BPCC (A-N) and Imti Longkumer, council chairman of Saring village and attended by BPCC (A-N) executive members from either sides; besides elders from neighnouring villages on both sides of the border.

ShilloNg, November 25 (iANS): Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) general secretary Dalbin N. Marak and government laboratory technician Pingku Palley Ch. Marak were arrested in Meghalaya, an official said Monday. A police spokesperson said Dalbin and Pingku were arrested Sunday night by a team of police and Special Weapons and Tactics commandos from different locations in Williamnagar, the district headquarters of the East Garo Hills. The commandos also seized three Bangladeshi passports, several incriminating documents and objects, including round seals and writing pads of the outfit's general secretary and vice chairman, from Pingku's residence at Tura in the West Garo Hills. Police did not disclose the name of the outfit's vice chairman. "Dalbin alias Amikka has been under our (police) scanner for several months for his activities after he was appointed GNLA's general secretary," J.F.K. Marak, the district police chief of East Garo Hills, told IANS. Dalbin claimed he was a
head teacher at Bijasik Chisim Lower Primary School in East Garo Hills. Following the arrest of the GNLA leader, the commandos raided the residence of Pingku, who confessed to have hidden three Bangladeshi passports under his name, round seals and writing pads of the outfit's general secretary and its vice chairman and other incriminating documents in his paternal residence at Tura, the police official said. "Both are prized catches for us. We have started interrogating them and hope they will spill the beans on their activities and their outfit's strategies and activities," Marak said. The arrest of Dalbin is seen as a major setback for the GNLA as he was one of the main think-tanks of the tribal outfit, fighting for a separate Garoland carved out of five impoverished districts of Garo Hills. "On several occasions, Dalbin helped Sohan D. Shira (GNLA military wing chief ) translate letters from Garo to English and his identity was hidden from the outfit members, barring Sohan," the police official said.

Honda unveils new City; The Faithful Jeep to be launched in January I
New Delhi, November 25 (livemiNt): Japanese auto maker Honda Motor Co. on Monday unveiled its fourth-generation model of its City sedan. The car is expected to be introduced in January. At the global unveiling in New Delhi, Honda also said that it will offer the new City with 1.5 litre diesel engine. The company has started taking pre-launch
T
he Jotsoma Nuolhou Kehou (JNK), the apex body of the Jotsoma people living in the state of Nagaland and elsewhere is pained to see the act of terrorism and vandalism perpetrated on the night of 31st October, 2013 at M/s Progressive Motors (TK Service Station), by exploding a grenade within the garage area of the firm, purportedly by a functionary of the NSCN (K), an organisation which espouse the cause of the Nagas for a sovereign nation. The proprietor of M/s Progressive Motors, Mr. T.K. Angami is a bona fide citizen of Jotsoma village, a village which too has contributed its share in the Naga National Movement and has its own martyrs, some of these martyrs who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation were from the NSCN (K) as well. The said act of terrorism and vandalism started from the incident of seizing a Maruti Gypsy bearing Regd. No. NL01-C-9188 (under repair) which belongs to Mr. L. Tuccu, Jt. Secretary, NSCN(K) from the premises of M/s Progressive Motors by some personnel of GPRN/NSCN. The JNK was given to understand that the Management had already handed over the key of the said vehicle to Mr. Atobo, the brother of Mr. L. Tuccu, who had come to deliver the vehicle on 6th September. 2013. On that day, the personnel of GPRN/NSCN took away Mr. Atobo against his will. Subsequently, on the next day, the same personnel of GPRN/
bookings of the model across the country. Developed at Honda’s research and development centre in Tochegi, Japan, the car will be first manufactured and sold in India and later in other 60 countries. The company aims to sell 1.2 million cars in Asia-Oceania region with India accounting for a fourth of the sales by 2016. “City is the leading brand of Honda in Asia and Oceania region and with the fourth generation Honda City, we aim to raise its popularity further and make it a significant future model in Honda’s global portfolio which will be available in many more countries,” saidYoshiyuki Matsumoto, managing officer, Honda Motor. New City will come with sun roof, rear AC vents, eight speakers, five inch multi-function display screen, reverse camera and four charging sockets. The new city is same in length but has a bigger wheel base up by 50mm to 2600mm. Honda has sold 2.2 million units of the car globally since its launch in 1996.
t’s not rare to see jeeps, relics from the II World War, occasionally plying on the roads in Nagaland. For many Nagas it is still a preferred mode of transport, especially in the interior parts of Nagaland for navigating the hazardous road conditions. Offcourse the richer ones has migrated to more reliable Maruti Gypsy. In towns like Kohima jeep has become a sort of collector’s items. Not, only because of its historicity, manliness but also for the pride in being able to own a guzzler. (A false sense of Naga pride) Its fuel consumption in this day and age will put even a die- hard fan think twice. Come Hornbill Festival and you will see “who’s who” of Nagaland parading in their jeeps all dressed in army fatigue - and nowhere to go! The not so fortunate one off-course would have their jeep converted for gas combustion. This is an environmental concern besides being a cause for domestic gas cylinders abuse in Nagaland. (Perhaps not now) The picture was taken near Jail
An Appeal to the NSCN (K) NSCN came and seized the said vehicle claiming that it was used for anti-social activities despite fervent appeal and protest from the GM of the firm not to take away the vehicle. The GPRN/ NSCN through a statement issued by its Ministry -of Information & Publicity, which appeared in all the local dailies on 18th September, 2013 clearly stated that they have seized the vehicle stating “The Naga Army seized the vehicle and kept it in their custody. Thereafter, L. Tuccu demanded TK Service station that a new vehicle be given to him. Threatening them with dire consequences if his demand was not met, that the Service station will be bombed.” The GPRN/NSCN through the same statement without any ambiguity wholly owned the responsibility of seizing the said vehicle and absolved TK Service station of any involvement by stating “The question of TK Service station issuing a new vehicle to L. Tuccu do not arise as they were not involved in it. The incident just happened to take place at their premises.” Thus, the JNK feels that if there is any issue in respect of seizing the vehicle and getting the same released to the rightful owner, the same should be taken up with GPRN/ NSCN and not TK Service station. Responding to the statement of GPRN/NSCN. Mr. L. Tuccu in his official capacity as Joint Sec-
retary, NSCN (K) issued a statement which too appeared in all the leading dailies of the state on 19th September, 2013 while denying of doing any anti-social activities as alleged by GPRN/ NSCN further stated “If T.K. Service have any concrete proof of my threat either telephonically or officially as to bombing their establishment from my side, let them bring to people’s notice. If not they should apologise instead of hiring some mercenaries to threaten the Govt., of NSCN (K) on their behalf.” To this, the TK Service issued a clarification which appeared in all the local dailies on 20th September, 2013 while explaining the sequences of the incident that had happened on 6th & 7” September. 2013 clarified that the article which appeared on 18th & 19th September, 2013 do not reflect their views or opinions in whatsoever manner stating “WE HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH THOSE PRESS RELEASES,” The firm further clarified that M/S TK Service is not responsible for the outcome of the incident in whatsoever manner and appealed to both the parties” as a business establishment that desires peace, harmony, and economic development for our State/Nation that we call home, we sincerely request all the parties to peacefully settle their differences between them and
strive together for what is best for Nagaland and her people.” Despite the clarification in no uncertain term that TK Service has nothing to do with the incident of seizing the Maruti Gypsy from its premises by the GPRN/ NSCN. The JNK was told by the proprietor that Mr. L.Tuccu kept on demanding a new gypsy and intimidated them of dire consequences if his demands were not met. On the morning of 31st September. 2013 the GM of the firm received a message in his telephone which read – “Ur life is in circle by danger so be aware of it….. u r wanted by N.S.C.N. (K)” The same night, a grenade exploded inside the garage damaging 9 vehicles. Then again on 2nd November, 2013 Mr. L.Tuccu called the GM and asked if they wanted some more bombs saying that the previous night’s blast was only a “small signal”. He further threatened that the next one would be bigger and during the day time with casualties. Thereafter, on 18th November, 2013 another message was received which runs “ This is to inform y that, a gypsy belonging 2 the govt. Of nscn(k) that ws lost frm your service station., is to be return to the govt. if nt to be replace by a new vehicle. Witin 3 to 4 days.. The govt. Of nscn(k) will take ultimate serious action against you. If you fail 2 abide with the govt. Govt. of NSCN (k)”.

colony, Kohima. It was great to see a ‘contextualized Naga jeep’ with mithun head in front. Till recently jeeps were part of our social consciousness and a silent witness of our history and culture. Perhaps, a grim reminder from the owner of our not so distance past, when owners of ‘mithun head (Feast of Merit - status symbols) was seen as, the coming of age of an individual in the society. This aspect of Naga culture was more or less sub-planted in the 20th century, as new ways of life made inroads into the Naga society. Also modernization and social changes that came with statehood in 1963! What a better way to remind us, than the relics of II World War the Jeep. The number is also significant as it’s now part of Nagaland’s motor
The facts as stated above, the JNK is confused as to whether the Government of NSCN (K) has authorised the said Mr. L.Tuccu, Joint Secretary NSCN (K) to carry on intimidating a defenceless public who has been rendering services to all the public irrespective of tribe or group to which he/she belongs to and ultimately vandalised the properties of Ms TK Service by bombing the garage on 31st Oct. 2013. The JNK firmly believed and have full faith that NSCN (K) being a responsible NPG would not authorise or sanction any of its cadre to carry out such condemnable criminal activities. We are sure that the act of vandalism was carried out by the individual and not through the sanction of the Government of NSCN (K). As all Nagas desire peace and arc stressing for reconciliation among the various groups. incident like this at this juncture will vitiate all the peaceful atmosphere that has been attained till date. We, the Jotsoma Nuolhou Kehou, therefore. through this APPEAL fervently request the authorities of Government of NSCN (K) to look into the matter with understanding and contain further act of vandalism or other terror activities in the interest of all concern. Neinguto Napranotsu President Jotsoma Nuolhou Kehou
K. Nakro Secretary Jotsoma Nuolhou Kehou
history, when vehicles were few and far in between, and numbering was basic. NLK for Kohima district, NLZ for Zunheboto and so on, were the preferred methods of stipulating vehicles in the state of Nagaland. Along with the changing social landscape came the deluge of modernity, BMW’s, style, fashion, consumerism, minus the infrastructures or the mentality to sustain them. Robin TemsuTemsu
Human trafficking has no room if the citizens are good
M
any years ago, the world was plagued by slave trade. Today abduction of children as another form of slave trade which is said to have been taking place every day in Delhi and in other places. Child hunters pick up children both male and female and sell them to certain destinations in India to be used as slave prostitute or slave labourers to earn money for the holders. The criminal business is conducted not in wilderness and not in the places where there are sparsely populated but where there are thickly populated. So the densely populated areas are the sheltering places for the traffickers to carry out their criminal business. Children snatched away are taken to such places. Children can be abducted from anywhere but any where is not the destination to conduct the business. For instance, in Nagaland there is no room for them to conduct their business because in Nagaland every village is as if a republic and the societies are systematic and all of the populations in the villages are social conscious. Each village maintains its
prestige before others. So harboring any evil elements is ostracised. Not only Nagaland but most of the North East States cannot be the destination of the barbarous trade. If the general public are good and have sense of responsibility and sense of the existence of God, all will be concerned and compassionate and all will be informers against evil practices and will coordinate with the administration in fighting against any inhuman practices. If the general public are alert and vigilant against the diabolical trade of human trafficking everywhere, the question of slave trade in any form does not arise. So the problem of human trafficking is not only the traffickers but the places where traffickers are facilitated to conduct their Criminal business. What a great shame it is! The general public should wake up and take up this issue as a matter of national importance. Human trafficking can be rooted out if the general public are educated to have sense of responsibility to oppose it. Rev. L. Suohie Mhasi

Dimapur, November 25 (mexN): A pair of Pied Hornbills was donated to Nagaland Zoological Park (NZP), Rangapahar by Benathung Odyuo, Class 1 contractor from Wokha Town on November 24. ment have landed in a constitutional row over the state's right to independently exploit its natural resources, resulting in the Centre sending out a strong missive last week asking it to fall in line. This, incidentally, is the second such letter, issued after a detailed legal review, the Governor's report and elaborate discussions at the highest levels, involving the Prime Minister's Office, Home Ministry, Law Ministry and Petroleum Ministry. The issue at hand is the interpretation of Article 371A of the Constitution relating to Nagaland. The provocation was the state government's move to issue the Nagaland Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulations last year. The Centre immediately objected saying that the state, under
tral subject. It argued that Article 371A only gives the state the right against implementing Central Acts in certain areas, and not to make new laws or regulations on these subjects. The Naga People's Front government led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, however, dug in its heels, insisting that Article 371A makes it clear that "no Act of Parliament in respect of Naga customary laws, administration of civil and criminal justice involving decisions according to customary law, ownership and transfer of land and its resources shall apply to the state of Nagaland unless the Legislative Assembly of Nagaland by a resolution so decides". The controversial notification, quoting a 2010 Assembly
ment produced a Petroleum Ministry response to a Parliament question in March 2011 conceding that the Constitutional provision applied to the exploitation of natural resources. However, admitting that this was a mistake, the ministry had pulled back the reply from Parliament last year and corrected its position. The ministry had then followed it up with a letter from Petroleum Minister Veerappa Moily in June to Rio, putting it on record that the notification on petroleum and natural gas regulations was "unconstitutional" and should be annulled. The Nagaland CM, in turn, took the matter to the Assembly, held consultations, including with noted legal luminaries, and wrote back a strong rejection of this
went ahead and invited expressions of interest from companies. This took the Centre by surprise and concerns increased when Nagaland Governor Ashwani Kumar sounded the alarm bells. It's believed that he told the Central government through several communications that the issue was turning serious and even had longterm security implications besides the Constitutional question. With the matter becoming sensitive, hectic consultations began within the government. The Law Ministry was asked to conduct a thorough legal examination and the Home Ministry was tasked to begin a backchannel with the state government. On the legal front, the Centre's interpretation of Article 371A is that it provides the state "nega-
vision. However, according to the Centre, it does not provide the state government the "positive power" to legislate or regulate aspects of the areas that may fall under Central control. In other words, sources said, Nagaland can opt to retain status quo on any of the issues including mining but it cannot seek to change it on its own terms. If it seeks a change, the Centre's contention is that it has to do so as per the Constitution, just like in other states. This has now been conveyed to the Rio government. Also, various backchannel options through special interlocutors and intelligence agencies are at work to ensure this time the state does not escalate matters further by sending back another rejection.

Decolonizing 21st Century Politics A movement
N
agas in the 21st century continue to conduct their affairs based on old politics driven by fear, exclusion and negative reactivity to ‘the other.’ As long as the old politics and practices prevail, Nagas, as a people, will find it difficult to transcend the divisions that separate us. New inclusive and participatory political processes based on mutual respect, responsibility and accountability, truth, inclusion and a shared vision for a common Naga future are necessary for us to live in harmony. This deep-rooted pattern has to be broken by decolonizing our minds. Historically, controlling human beings by suppressing the human body has been most successful through colonizing the mind and spirit. This invisible and highly effective form of mental colonizing is intended to cloud and internalize the human spirit based on fear tactics and sense of worthlessness that creates confusion and doubt. This psychological conditioning effectively controls human beings’ behavior and stabilizes the status quo which leads to accepting abnormal or false norms that have been imposed on the oppressed group. This usually takes place in situations where those who are being suppressed/oppressed don’t see themselves as makers of their own culture and history. Perhaps Bantu Steve Biko best articulated this phenomenon by saying that ‘the most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.’ The State’s policy of suppression results in various economic, political and social outcomes, both intended and not. However, at its core, the state’s policy of suppression needs to be viewed at a psychological level, as its success is based on generating mental confusion that undermines, compromises and weakens the capacity to transform. Any transformative initiative requires a deliberate process of decolonizing the mind. Transformation renews and reinvigorates a people’s culture, which is the carrier of a society’s values . This is the dynamic process of cultivating new life! This cultural transformation highlights the critical need to reexamine and deconstruct its base and values which was formed through suppression. Ngugi Wa Thiong'o astutely responds to western accusations regarding the prevalence of corruption in Africa by saying, “They wash their hands of what is happening, as if they have never had anything to do with the corruption, with massacres, with backwardness. My concern is with these colonial distortions. There are elements which are indigenous, but they are also external. You can't understand one without the other. The tendency is to leave out one of the elements in the equation. But an equation without all its elements is no longer an equation.” Ngugi further emphasizes the need to challenge and transform ‘the system’ because of the terrible moral decay. He adds, “An individual can go, but the system continues.” To bring change, we need a new song, but in order to sing a new song, we need to decolonize our minds. If not, we will only be singing the songs written and taught to us by others. The birth of a new politics will take place through transformation processes that begins by decolonizing our minds.

American victims' family campaigns for forgiveness
"I
say, let the terror fade and let the light of love shine through all what we do on a daily basis &hellip." That's the measured response of an American woman, Kia Scherr, who lost her husband Alan, 58, and only daughter, 13-year old Naomi, in the Nov 26, 2008, Mumbai terror attack. Alan Scherr and Naomi were dining in a restaurant in the Hotel Oberoi Trident that fateful night when a couple of heavily armed Pakistani terrorists indiscriminately rained bullets on the people. The terrorists were part of the 10-strong group which had sneaked into Mumbai earlier that evening through the Arabian Sea route and created mayhem in the city for 60 hours, killing 166 and injuring around 300. Alan and Naomi were in India as part of a meditation group with Synchronicity Foundation for Modern Spirituality (SFMS) to introduce hi-tech meditation to Mumbai. "I feel we can best honour the memory of those who lost their lives by rising from the ashes of darkness and loving like extremists. That means forgiveness, compassion, understanding, collaborating to increase the 'Peace Index' by strengthening the pillars of peace through partnership with education, business and government," Scherr told IANS on her annual visit to Mumbai through the One Life Alliance (OLA) of which she is a prominent activist. Making it a point to return to India every year around the 26/11 anniversary, she campaigns to expand and bring more people together into the circle of love and peace. Scherr admits it's going to be a long journey. "But then, all journeys are, and people, even the victims of a mindless attack or a holocaust, have to get along and move ahead in their lives with love, tenderness and empathy," she explains in a calm voice. With this objective, she keeps coming to India. This time, she will be here for at least six months and administer pledges to people from different walks of life, including children in schools run by the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Founded by Charles Cannon, OLA is a small group of people affected by the 26/11 attack who spread the message of peace, love and compassion among people, communities and children. They had publicly forgiven the terrorists for the carnage, because, as Scherr emphasised, "life is meant to be lived in harmony". "We ask the children to take a pledge a day which can be as simple as just smiling, being polite and showing consideration for fellow beings, or even looking at the world with wonder and amazement. The children are the future and inculcating love and empathy is easy for them to achieve as the world and life is like a miracle for them," Scherr said. Daily for a month, a new pledge is added and Scherr says that people who do it find their lives changed, become more sublime and beautiful. Scherr is also working with two people from Rwanda and some businessmen in Mexico City, while a couple of schools in the US have also started using the peace programme. To a question whether the world will become a safe place in the future, Scherr says it is best to focus on what is possible in the face of what the reality is. "We can always do better. We can look at the gaps in security, look at what does not work and try a new approach as we increase technology to blend with improved relations with each other and among countries," Scherr concludes with a smile.

Manske spoke with several people who encouraged her idea of launching a business to help survivors of trafficking. Her participation in Advent Conspiracy at her home church acted as the catalyst in moving her business—Made for Freedom—from dream to reality. “AC connected my desire with a mission,” she says. “It helped me think about how we spend our money. I love the idea of buying less and giving more, but if you’re going to buy something, why not buy something that’s significant in multiple ways?” Several testimonies are also documented in Advent Conspiracy. One story describes how the owner of a private truck line established an optional payroll deduction program for his 15 employees; he matches their deductions, with all proceeds going to Living Water International. Another testimony describes how a South African church threw a Christmas party at a local school for underprivileged persons and gave 750 children gifts they had specifically asked for; the church members’ children came along and celebrated alongside them. Ecclesia Church, self-described as Houston’s holistic, missional, Christian community, also has multiple events throughout the Advent season to help parishioners engage the tenets of AC. The church hosts an annual Art Market featuring live music and more than 150 tables of products made by Ecclesia members and local artisans, including abstract art, baby clothes, pottery, and other items. A portion of the proceeds go toward AC-sponsored organizations such as Living Water International and IJM. In 2012, the Art Market raised $14,000. In Portland, Ore., multiple congregations have used parishioners’ AC donations to partner with the city on local social justice initiatives, including poverty, sex trafficking, education, mentoring, and foster care. McKinley, a local pastor, said the churches always choose initiatives that parishioners are passionate about and can work with long term. “We don’t just cut a check,” McKinley states. “We partner with the city around these projects.” Right now, more than 100 churches are rallying around foster care. Holder hopes Advent Conspiracy sparks change not only for individuals, churches, and communities, but for generations. He wonders what it would be like for Christmas to look like something different, something deeper, than what many of us grew up with. “What if Christmas weren’t just for me?” he asks. “What if it were something where we could reach across lines and do this together? real progress toward an ambitious, universal and legally binding climate agreement to be adopted in 2015. It is essential that governments start phasing out fossil fuel subsidies, which currently account for about $485 billion a year, and are far greater than the global investment in renewable energy. While cutting subsidies is an issue for developed and developing countries alike, it remains true that the Group of 20 countries accounted for 78 percent of global carbon emissions from fuel combustion in 2010. What now? If governments are unwilling to lead when leadership is required, people must. We need a global grass-roots movement that tackles climate change and its fallout. In Australia, one initiative aims at getting one million women to take small steps in their everyday lives to cut emissions. In India, there is a project to bring solar energy to slums, which also creates green jobs. In Guatemala, women farmers are planting trees to sequester carbon and improve cultivation techniques. In Mexico, the “ecocasa” program is unlocking funds to build energy-efficient housing. Despite these encouraging initiatives, citizens need to press their governments to come up with ambitious
ry.” The dominant cause. Not just one among many. As a consequence, we will witness more extreme weather patterns such as droughts, storms, floods and heat waves. As we saw, just days before the Warsaw conference, with the devastating effects of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, those who bear the brunt are the poorest and most vulnerable. We should also expect to witness a dramatic increase of various infectious diseases, especially vector-borne diseases such as malaria or dengue fever. Eventually, all of us, whether from the industrialized or developing world, will feel the consequences. In fact, this has already started, as those who experienced recent wildfires in Australia and California and this year’s floods in Europe can attest. Climate change will threaten our security, exacerbating tensions that lead to violent conflicts as the scramble for resources escalates out of control. But let me conclude on a note of cautious optimism: If science tells us that human activity is the main driver of global warming, then human action can also reverse it. But this must happen before the climate consequences become irreversible. Failing to act will be nothing short of catastrophic. is underway to free people of faith from the yoke of Christmas consumerism
C
HRISTMAS, ON THE surface, looks like the most wonderful time of year— the season of love, lights, carols, candles, and family reunions, the time when Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Look a bit deeper, though, and one might notice a more idolatrous narrative shining just as brightly: consumerism. From Black Friday to New Year’s Day, we are inundated with the commercial demands of Christmas. For many, the list of things to do and gifts to purchase can seem endless. We buy into the mantra that the more money we spend, the more love we convey. We become lost in crowded stores, endless websites, and credit card debt. Christians often struggle to faithfully observe Advent, a time of waiting and preparation for the miraculous birth of Jesus. While many of us purchase this spurious version of Christmas, a new movement has been born. It’s called Advent Conspiracy (AC), and its participants are seeking to turn Christmas upside down by exchanging consumption for compassion. “Advent Conspiracy is not a fourpoint checklist on how to do Christmas. If anything, it’s a chance for us to rediscover the wonder and the mystery of the incarnation and what that means to us personally and what that might mean for the world,” said Greg Holder, lead pastor of The Crossing church in the St. Louis area. In 2006 Holder and two clergy friends—Rick McKinley, lead pastor of Imago Dei Community in Portland, Ore., and Chris Seay, pastor and lead elder of Ecclesia Church in Houston—realized that they and their parishioners “were getting through the season with no sense of joy or celebration, with almost a sense of survival.” In response, the three pastors formed Advent Conspiracy to help people turn away from the hyper-consumerism of Christmas. AC’S CORE tenets are quite basic: Worship fully, spend less, give more, and love all. When lived out, however, these principles have subversive power to not only turn Christmas upside down but to transform lives. WORSHIP FULLY This principle distinguishes AC from other people speaking out against consumerism. “How we worship and whom we worship begins to shape us as people,” Holder said. “We worship Jesus as King; we make no apologies for that. Christmas is the story of a king entering into our world and our story, calling us to a

he last-minute deal at the United Nations Climate Conference in Warsaw keeps hopes for a comprehensive successor agreement to the 1997 Kyoto protocol alive. But let us be clear: Much more decisive action will be needed if we are to stand any chance at fending off the dangers of climate change. We now have just one more shot, next year in Peru, to make more substantive progress toward a successor agreement before the crucial 2015 Paris conference. Even before then, it will be crucial for governments to put aside narrow national interests in order to ensure that the pledges made at the 2009 Copenhagen conference — to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius, or 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit, compared to pre-industrial levels — are met. The unprecedented walkouts at the Warsaw climate talks — first, by representatives of most developing countries on Wednesday, and then by green groups and N.G.O.’s on Thursday — reveal a growing level of frustration with what many perceive as a lack of political leadership at a time when it is needed most. It was clear before this latest round of talks in the Polish capital that the world’s governments must make
sustainable solutions, not just makeshift ones. Climate change must inform any new policy, whether in the development or the energy sector. It must determine the way we build our houses and the way we structure our economy. Green thinking cannot be the sole responsibility of a few environmentally minded activists, while the rest of us go on living as if there were no tomorrow. The science behind climate change, after all, is clear. As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the leading global body for the assessment of climate change, has unequivocally stated: “Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and since the 1950s, many of the observed changes are unprecedented over decades to millennia. The atmosphere and oceans have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice diminished, sea level has risen, and the concentrations of greenhouse gases have increased.” To those who argue that global warming is just the way of nature and not in any way related to human activity, the panel responds, “It is extremely likely that human influence has been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th centu-

nline Social Platform (OSP) or Social Media Networks like facebook and twitter are not only avenues for connecting with people and exchanging ideas but are fast emerging as inclusive and democratic platform with blogs and pages such as The Naga Blog (TNB), Naga Spear, and Nagaland Open Online Barter or Sell (NOOBS). Of course, naïve use/abuse of OSP often promotes elements such as cyber bullying, tribalism and a form of idealism without pragmatic personal responsibility. It can also be manipulated for promoting vested ideological interests (as in the case of “mass exodus” of NEI students from the cities in mainland India). In this article my focus is limited to commenting only on the socially constructive use of OSP. This article may not be necessary in a context where citizens already have a developed awareness of OSP as a tool for promoting change. Naga society is still struggling to create a vibrant civil society in its truest sense and it is in this context that this essay is presented. Online Social Platform is a priceless gift of the younger generation to the present Naga leaders: OSP is so far one of the creative social forces from which politicians, bureaucrats, tribal leaders and the church can learn about their successes, failures and what the younger Naga generation expects from them. It is on OSP that young Nagas express their anger and hopes for future. In these narratives, one can see the inevitable seeds of change and a blue print of what and how a Naga society should look like. Thus, many socially conscious users of OSPs feel that we are already experiencing a moment of gentle Naga revolution mediated through pages such as TNB and Naga Spear.
scribing the experience of democracy on the cyberspace by different categories of users. Visit TNB and other online platform to confirm whether a cyberocratic Naga revolution is really alive and kicking. There is a public trial going on every minute and every hour on TNB and it covers almost everything that is happening in Naga society. Nobody is spared by this truth trial and there is no impunity: politicians, government departments, Naga political groups, church, individuals, the list of issues is unending. Presented in many forms (such as questions, complaints, appeals, fact reporting, images, analysis, suggestions), these online discourses unmask the deceptive Naga reality and create an alternative Naga revolutionary discourse.
Socially informed use of OSP should be viewed as a form of critical prophetic mediation: Users of OSP should be active and purposeful because every comma, phrase and image that you key-in or upload is a form of prophetic mediation. WE ARE NOT SIMPLY BLOGGING because we are participating in a political act! In fact, WE ARE BLOGGING FOR CHANGE. Therefore, it is vital to employ OSP as a form of critical socio-political intervention in the ongoing politics of Naga history. By seeing OSP as an extension of Naga movement for change, online platforms are fast becoming a lively form of critical social practice. In this manner, each and every blog that voices out against injustices challenges the “powers that be” and acts as tools for subverting the oppressive narratives of the society. However, users should remind themselves that this mode of social practice involves a lot of risk as there is no naïve or neutral position that one can maintain.
The socio-political significance of OSP depends on the kind of mindset and questions that users bring to the discourse: The attitude and questions that users bring to OSP changes radically if and when they try to situate their voices in the context of the ongoing crises in Naga society. The purposefulness and impact of SN transforms automatically when users make the reality of faltering leadership/institutions, rampant corruption, economic disparity, and political diIs a cyberocratic Naga revolution re- vision as their shared social location and ally happening? The revealing letters of two prominent intellectuals from almost a century ago resonate in contemporary choices between a 'realist' endorsement of nationalism and war and the pursuit of a cosmopolitan global order

hile Rabindranath Tagore’s (1861-1941) lyrical poems still charm his readers, his visionary writings on politics and international relations are lesser read or known today, even in his country India where he is reverently addressed as Gurudev (Great Teacher). This is in fact a great loss because it hides from the world the heritage and guidance from the intellectual contributions of a man deeply committed to international peace, cooperation and cultural exchange. Among those contributions, the letters Tagore exchanged with the renowned Japanese poet Yone Noguchi in 1938, 75 years ago, offer significant glimpses of his rich political philosophy. Like many other men of his country, Tagore was fascinated by the remarkable economic and scientific transformation of Japan. Having observed in his writings that European politics as it stood and its offspring colonialism were based upon ‘exclusiveness’ and exploitation, he saw in Japan’s rise the promise of a slow evolution of internationalism. In his lecture, The Message of India to Japan, delivered in Tokyo in 1916 during his first visit to the country, Tagore explained why Japan’s progress was of ‘utmost interest’ and why the path that Japan had taken in its march towards distinction—eagerly assimilating the achievements of western civilisation while never losing sight of its own human and cultural values— merited Asia’s attention: …Japan, the child of the Ancient East, has also fearlessly claimed all the gifts of the modern age for herself…the whole world waits to see what this great Eastern nation is going to do with the opportunities and responsibilities she has accepted from the hands of the modern time. For the same reason, perhaps no one was as disturbed as Tagore by Japan’s determined turn to militarism in the first half of the twentieth century. Noted author Pankaj Mishra, in his recent book From the Ruins of Empire: The Revolt Against the West and the Remaking of Asia, observes that even in 1916, Tagore ‘was alarmed… to see a country that was
then in the midst of an extraordinary growth of national self-confidence and imperialist expansion, and preparing, too, for more battles ahead with both old enemies and new friends.’ When Japan attacked China in 1937, in what was the beginning of the tragedies of the Second Sino-Japanese War, Tagore was vehement in his condemnation of Japanese violence. In a chapter on Tagore in his insightful book The Argumentative Indian, Amartya Sen notes how Tagore wrote that Japan ‘has now become itself a worse menace to the defenceless peoples of the East.’ Yone Noguchi (1875-1947), famous for being the first Japanese poet to write in English and whose verses filled with imagery and ‘delicate exclamations’ found much appreciation in the west, tried to reason Tagore out of this opinion. The two writers shared a warm friendship, portrayed by Tagore’s remembrance of ‘the spirit of Japan which I learned to admire in your writings and came to love through my personal contacts with you.’ In the correspondence that followed, Tagore and Noguchi vigorously debated and defended their opposed notions of war, patriotism and the responsibility of intellectuals. War Noguchi justified Japanese aggression on China, explaining it to be unique, as Japan believed that Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek had ‘sold his country’ and his Kuomintang government was a ‘miserable puppet of the West.’ Hence, war became ‘the inevitable means, terrible though it is, for establishing a great new world in the Asiatic continent. It is the war of “Asia for Asia”.’ And the purpose of the war, Noguchi claimed, was not conquest, but it was ‘for the correction of China's mistaken ideas and for the uplifting of her simple and ignorant masses to better life and wisdom.’ In words that would have epitomised the obstinate determination of any imperial power, he declared: ‘If Chiang Kai-shek wishes a long war, we are quite ready for it. Five years? Ten years? Twenty years? As long as he desires, my friend.’ In his reply, Tagore refuted Noguchi’s claim of the uniqueness of Japan’s position by pointing out that military situations ‘are always unique.’ For him, nothing ennobled the bloodshed of a ‘war of ‘Asia for Asia’’’: Humanity, in spite of its many failures, has believed in a fundamental moral structure of society. When you speak, therefore, of ‘the inevitable means, terrible though it is, for establishing a great new world in the Asiatic continent’—signifying, I sup-
pose, the bombing of Chinese women and children and the desecration of ancient temples and universities as a means of saving China for Asia— you are ascribing to humanity a way of life which is not inevitable even among the animals and would certainly not apply to the East, in spite of her occasional aberrations. You are building your conception of an Asia raised on a tower of skulls. While Noguchi hoped that after ridding the Chinese masses of the ‘polluted people’ who controlled it, Japan could work together with China, ‘perhaps with some sense of repentance,’ in reconstructing Asia, Tagore doubted if true reconciliation could ever follow war, given its human and cultural costs.
Patriotism In an era in which nationalist movements grew in both number and strength, no topic could have been as engaging as patriotism. Noguchi wrote proudly that the Japanese people, called under the flag of ‘service-making,’ were countering adversity and making great sacrifices for the ‘realization of idealism’: ‘We must have as our neighbour a country that is strong and true, and glad to cooperate with us in our work of reconstruction.’ But patriotism which bred egotism and effected violence held no appeal for Tagore. His belief was unwavering that ’… patriotism which claims the right to bring to the altar of its country the sacrifice of other people’s rights and happiness will endanger rather than strengthen the foundation of any great civilisation.’ However, Tagore did agree with Noguchi that there were no better standards or examples prevalent in the world around them. He did not object to Noguchi’s observation that America has ceased to practice ‘the lesson of freedom’ and that England had ‘ledger-book diplomacy’. Pankaj Mishra points out in his book that ‘Tagore was, of course, aware that Japan’s ‘obnoxiousness’ was itself a reaction to the nationalistic and imperialist West and its ‘unreasonableness’. But instead of launching its own brand of imperialism to counter Europe and America, he wanted Japan to lead Asia in the transmission of eastern ideas to the west, and, in the words of his 1916 Tokyo lecture, in ‘substituting the human heart for cold expediency’. He told the poet: ‘If you refer me to them, I have nothing to say. What I should have liked is to be able to refer them to you.’ For Tagore, patriotism was an acceptable concept only if it eventually led one to embrace the entire world, its people, their cultures and their rights. He was unflinch-
ing in his conviction, expressed in the lecture, that friendship is ‘the only natural tie which can exist between nations.’
The responsibility of intellectuals Noguchi contended that the war on China had the support of the Japanese people, ‘from the Emperor to a rag-picker in the street,’ and that despite the ‘considerable freedom of speech and action’ they enjoyed, no one opposed it. He wrote that Chinese propaganda against Japan and the threat of communism had urged Japan’s intellectuals to be of one mind in endorsing the invasion: …who will promise us the safety of Japanese spirit that we cultivated for thousands of years, under the threat of Communism across the fence? We don’t want to barter our native land for an empty name of intellectuals. No, you mustn’t talk nonsense! God forbid! A dismayed Tagore called this ‘another authentic symptom of the modern intellectual’s betrayal of humanity’. ‘It is sad to think,’ he wrote back, ‘that the passion of collective militarism may on occasion helplessly overwhelm even the creative artist, that genuine intellectual power should be led to offer its dignity and truth to be sacrificed at the shrine of the dark gods of war.’ He tried to convince Noguchi that ‘there is no propaganda like good and noble deeds’ and that if Japan’s intellectuals could make certain that their country’s actions would be so and that its poor and workers are not exploited, they need fear neither propaganda nor communism. Indeed, history is opportunity—particularly so when lessons that guide the present and future are learnt from the past. It will be an injustice, both to Tagore and Noguchi, to use these letters merely as an opportunity to condemn Japan for its actions of the past. Even today, their distinct opinions resonate in different perspectives on world affairs. In fact, what is most striking about the Tagore-Noguchi correspondence is the contemporary relevance of the arguments they raised: the justifications of war, the place and boundaries of patriotism in our interlinked world and, perhaps most importantly, the responsibility of artists and thinkers to guide and enlighten public opinion when it is impaired by the absence of critical thought. In our age, when calls for intervention under the banner of humanitarian purposes, the troubles of post-war reconciliation and the justifications for violations in the name of security are commonplace, the sanctity Tagore reserved for reasoning is worthy of emulation. As Sen concludes, ‘it is in the sovereignty of reasoning—fearless reasoning in freedom—that we can find Rabindranath Tagore’s lasting voice.’

well known scientist, Soren Kierkegaard said, while worshipping, all the worshippers are participants, and there is only one audience – God. It is very much true. However, most of us tend to think that only those who take active parts in worship are the real participants, and those who sit and listen or watch are not. According to me, due to lack of this understanding, the way we worship God go wrong in many ways. Since we do not keep in mind that all worshippers are participants and God is the audience, our focus of worship is often human centered, not Godcentered. I mean, we are not much concerned about how the real audience (God) is looking at us and watching us, but our concern is more on how the congregation who are also the participants in worship, observe and judge us. So, to gain impression becomes one of the main aims in our participation. That is the reason we use different ideas so that what we do in worship service will be impressive and attractive. After the worship service, when we receive thanks, appreciations and praises, we feel happy and good. Rarely, we think and ask, whether what have performed is acceptable to the real and only audience, God. Therefore, we have wrong motive often in worship. I don’t mean to say that we need not keep our eyes on the congregation or give importance to them. All the elements of worship need to be emphasized. But, I believe, if the audience, God, accepts our performance or participation, the passive participants (the congregation) will also do. I feel that, in our worship, over-emphasis on the congregation, who are also the participants in actuality, make our performance unacceptable in the sight of God – the real audience. And, since the congregation fail to understand that they are also the participants in worship, they make many unhealthy judgments which distort the true meaning of worship. If we are well reminded and are conscious that the only audience is God, the true sense of worship will prevail in a better way. Moreover, there will be acceptance, both by the real audience, God, and the passive participation, the congregation. When I project this notion, some may disagree and argue that, if the congregation accepts our performances, God will also accept, but it’s not true always. One simple reason is, most of the time human beings look at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart. So the logic of my argument is that if God accepts our performances in worship, the congregation will also accept. Thus, those who are Godcentered in worship are also human-centered. If we say that some are only thinking of God and not the congregation, the thoughts they have on God is definitely wrong. For those who have interest in God while worshiping, have interest in the congregation too. Hence, we need to rethink and ask, whether our focus while worshipping is on impression or acceptance, and change if we have been going wrong. Indeed, we cannot bring change or impact the congregation with our own power and strength. It is made possibly only with the help of God. As I think about impression and impact in worship, I observe that, many are normally impressed, but not impacted. Impression in the real sense is not a negative connotation, but in worship, it may not be healthy always. Through impressions, there will be praise, appreciation and thank to the speakers, singers and any performers on stage. But in reality, those who give thanks, appreciations and praises might not have benefited or changed. Once, after the service, a woman went and shook the hand of the speaker with a thankful heart, and appreciated him for his sermon. She told the preacher that his sermon was very interesting and challenging. So, the preacher asked her, can you tell me something you have learned. She stuttered and replied, actually, it was really all good, but I don’t remember any point in particular. This is what I mean being impressed, not impacted. In our Church today, we are overly conscious about impression, but less concerned about impact. A person who is impacted may not declare that sermon or song or skit was good, but the outcome will be reflected on his/her change of attitude and lifestyle. Impact comes with the help of God and thus any performance which gives impact is done with God. However, frequently, we are interested in impression. When we sing, ray, speak and perform anything, we often think of how the people in the congregation look at us, think about our performance and give judgment. The vocabularies we use, styles of speaking, singing and performing often portray our target on impressing the congregation. As we become more and more conscious on impression, without our realization, our liveliness in God and spirituality gradually dies down. If we have been worshipping God with wrong motives, it is the need of the hour to consider this matter seriously and change our way of worship. Impact takes place with the power of God. So, I strongly believe that if we are interested in impact while participating in the worship service, we also don’t forget the idea of acceptance of our worship by God, the only audience. Mostly, our worship revolves around these three – impression, acceptance and impact. And I opine that, today, we are over-conscious about impression, and we are less concerned about acceptance and impact. In this write-up, I don’t intend to bring in detail the idea and meaning of worship, but in our context, worship is also like mainly sharing the burdens, pains, sufferings and problems to God, which is not primary in worship. Some are of the view that throwing our burdens to God in worship is not important. Some don’t completely deny its importance, but opine that these are secondary. As I observe, majority of the worshippers in our Church today, consider worship as laying down their burdens to God. Evidently, we are too much into it. That’s how we distort the real meaning of worship. Worship is literally, “ascribing to God”. It means adoring, praising and thanking God. But, what is primary in worship is not often emphasized and practiced. I believe that we can have a better sense of worshipping God if we remember Kierkegaard’s statement – all the worshippers are participants and the only audience is God.

Parents guilty of killing Aarushi in case that captivated India
Timeline of Aarushi-Hemraj murder case
NEW DElhi, NovEmbEr 25 (rEuTErS): A court on Monday found a dentist couple guilty of murdering their 14-year-old daughter and a servant five years ago, in a dramatic finale to a case that transfixed the country and tapped unease on both sides of the rich-poor divide. Aarushi Talwar was found with her throat slit at the family home in Noida, an affluent town of new shopping malls and offices near Delhi, in 2008. A day later, the body of the family servant, Hemraj, was discovered. Rajesh and Nupur Talwar were convicted in a local court in Ghaziabad, near Noida, and remanded in custody ahead of sentencing on Tuesday. Naresh Yadav, a lawyer present in court, told reporters waiting outside that the couple and members of their family broke down in tears when the verdict was read out. Early in the investigation, police alleged Rajesh had murdered his daughter and servant in a rage after finding them in a compromising situation - the kind of crime more often associated with rural, conservative parts of India where “honour killings” are not uncommon. Both parents were later charged, but the Talwars always denied the murder and

blamed sensational media coverage for demonising them and damaging their defence. They also described a Kafkaesque trail of botched police operations, arrests, “truth serum” tests and contradictory rulings by different investigative bodies. Much has been made in the media of the fact that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) relied on circumstantial evidence to pursue the Talwars. R.K. Saini, representing the CBI, defended the prosecution. “There were so many
circumstances that proved that no one could have committed the murder other than the two accused,” he said. “The court has convicted them after going through the chain of circumstantial evidence.” Rebecca John, one of the lawyers representing the Talwars, said they would appeal the ruling in a higher court. “We are deeply disappointed, hurt and anguished for being convicted for a crime that we have not committed,” the Talwars said in a statement. “We refuse to feel defeated
and will continue to fight for justice.” Horrific crime stories are common in India and many involve caste or class. But the Aarushi case, in which police named Hemraj as the murder suspect before his body was found, resonated with the rapidly expanding number of welloff families who fret that their wealth makes them vulnerable to violence. Dipankar Gupta, a sociologist at Shiv Nadar University in Uttar Pradesh said the case highlighted how domestic staff were frequently abused
by employers in India. “But at least now there is some progress and people are talking about it,” he said. Newspapers this month reported the case of a wife of a member of parliament who allegedly tortured a maid to death at her home in Delhi. Security footage last week of a machete attack on a bank employee withdrawing cash from an ATM in Bangalore to pay for her child’s birthday party was played repeatedly on news channels. She was partly paralysed and the attacker is at large.

NEW DElhi, NovEmbEr 25 (PTi): The Tehelka journalist, who had accused its editor Tarun Tejpal of sexually assaulting her, has resigned from the magazine to be “free from any kind of pressure” as its employee. Tejpal has been charged with rape by the Goa Police. When contacted, the girl said that she has resigned from Tehelka. Sources said she had sent her resignation to the Tehelka management two days ago as she wanted to be free from any kind of pressure as an employee of the organisation. The woman journalist on Saturday had issued a statement suggesting she and her family were being subjected to pressure and intimidation at an “intensely traumatic” time to “protect” Tejpal.
Disappointed over Tehelka management’s handling of the case, consulting editor Jay Mazoomdaar and Revati Laul, an assistant editor, have also have put in their papers. There are reports that Tehelka’s literary editor Shougat Dasgupta also stepped down and more people are likely to resign in the next few days. A three-member Goa Police team in the last two days had quizzed Tehelka managing editor Shoma Chaudhury and three employees who were contacted by the victim to corroborate her version. The woman journalist had mentioned the names of her three colleagues, with whom she had interacted soon after the alleged assault happened at a Goa
Lalu Prasad moves SC for bail in fodder scam case
NEW DElhi, NovEmbEr 25 (PTi): RJD chief Lalu Prasad, who is undergoing a five-year jail term in a fodder scam case, on Monday moved the Supreme Court seking bail. The apex court will hear Lalu’s bail plea on November 29. A bench headed by Chief Justice P Satahsivam, before whom the matter was mentioned by senior advocate P H Parekh, said that the case will be taken up on Friday. Lalu, whose Parliament membership was taken away after being convicted in the case, moved the apex court challenging the order of the Jharkhand high court which had dismissed his bail plea. The Jharkhand high court had on October 31 rejected the bail plea of RJD supremo, who is lodged at the Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi. Only minor incidents of violence marred the polling that began at 8 a.m. to pick a new 230-member legislature barring three constituencies of Balaghat district where it started an hour earlier to foil Maoist designs. “Madhya Pradesh voting is likely to exceed 71 percent, the highest ever turnout in the state,” Deputy Election Commissioner Sudhir Tripathi told the media in New Delhi. Voter turnout till 5 p.m. -- when the polling centres closed -- was 65.45 percent. Reject all parties, Muslims told
NEW DElhi, NovEmbEr 25 (iANS): Muslim religious leaders Monday told Muslim voters to reject all political parties in the ongoing assembly elections, accusing politicians of using the community as a vote bank. “We appeal to Muslims not to vote for the so-called secular parties and exercise the ‘NOTA’ option to express their anger and anguish against all political groups,” Mufti Ishtiaq Hussain Qadri told a gathering of over 1,000 religious heads of Islamic institutions here. He was addressing a meeting held under the banner of the All India Tanzeem Ulama-e-Islami of Baralive sect. Mufti Istiaq said Muslims remained socially, economically and educationally backward despite decades of Congress rule. The Bharatiya Janata Party too pursued a policy of alienating Muslims, he said. So there was no other choice for Muslims -- India’s largest minority -- but to opt for NOTA (None of the Above) in the electronic voting machines or ballot papers, rejecting all candidates in the fray.
turnout showed that people were determined to oust the BJP. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who contested from his traditional Budhni constituency as well as from Vidisha, said he was confident the BJP would retain the state. He told the media before voting in his village in Sehore district that his dream was to make Madhya Pradesh a developed state. Union Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath asserted that the Congress would win at least 140 seats “as people want to be free of the corrupt BJP regime”. Despite the deployment of a large number of security personnel, supporters of candidates exchanged gunfire near four polling booths each in Bhind and Morena districts. Border Security Force troopers opened fire near a polling centre in Morena after a scuffle. An electronic voting machine (EVM) was damaged in Bhind and one was taken away by thugs in
A similar incident was reported in Seoni district. With 2,586 candidates in the fray, the main contest was between the BJP -- which has ruled Madhya Pradesh since 2003 -- and the Congress. Among the prominent BJP candidates were former chief minister Babulal Gaur (Govindpura in Bhopal), minister Kailash Vijayvargiya (Mhow in Indore) and former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s nephew Anoop Mishra (Bhitarvar in Gwalior). BJP’s Yashodara Raje Scindia contested against her nephew and union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, projected as the Congress’ unofficial chief ministerial candidate, from Shivpuri in Gwalior. Prominent Congress candidates included former union minister Suresh Pachauri (Bhojpur), leader of the opposition in the assembly Ajay Singh (Churhat), Digvijaya Singh’s son Jaivardhan Singh (Raghogarh), and Sachin Yadav, son of former deputy chief

Not a single vote was recorded in 10 polling booths in Ratlam, Raisen, Morena, Betul, Damoh and Rajgarh districts till 2 p.m. after the residents decided to keep away in protest over local issues. The polling began briskly despite a chilly morning. Voters queued up at many polling centres even before they opened. As the sun rose, the queues kept lengthening. For the first time, the “none of the above” (NOTA) option -- a provision voters can use to reject all candidates - was made available to voters on the EVMs. The BJP ousted the Congress in 2003. In 2008, it retained power winning 143 seats. The Congress won 71 seats. The Madhya Pradesh verdict will be out Dec 8 along with the results of the Delhi, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh elections.
93 schoolgirls molested during train journey in Bihar
PATNA, NovEmbEr 25 (AgENciES): As many as 93 schoolgirls were reportedly sexually molested for more than 4 hours by a group of men in a running train in Bihar on Sunday. The incident was a reminiscence of the Delhi gang-rape on a moving bus in December last year. Taking the matter seriously, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has asked authorities to initiate action against the culprits. The hapless students, accompanied by their three women teachers, from Carmel School in Dhanbad and Digwadih, were returning homes by an express train which they had boarded at the Patna railway junction late on Saturday night. They were in Patna to participate in a two-day environment conference and were returning home when the incident occurred.
As per the victims’ account, the horror began soon after they boarded the Ganga-Damodar express at the Patna junction on Saturday night. The group had their reservations in the S-1 and B-1 boggies of the train but much to their surprise, they found their seats having been occupied by a large group of men who claimed to be participants of the railway recruitment examination. Reports said the lumpen elements passing lewd remarks refused to vacate seats despite repeated requests by the girls and the teachers, even as the cops just looked on. Eventually, they requested the unauthorised travellers to spare only 10 of their total 93 reserved seats, which was refused by the unruly men. They also misbehaved and assaulted the women teachers who protested against their
lewd comments. With no option left, the teachers brought the harassed girls to another bogey of the train. But the culprits followed them there too and continued harassing them. The ordeal lasted until the ruffians got down from the train at the Koderma railway station in Jharkhand four hours later. Meanwhile, the Bihar chief minister while taking the matter quite seriously has directed the additional director general, railways to initiate action against the culprits. “I have asked the ADG railway to initiate immediate action against the culprits and also fix responsibility as to who were responsible for this shocking incident,” Kumar told the media on Monday while releasing his government’s annual report card on his government completing 8 year in power.
India’s coastal security better post 26/11 but chinks remain
NEW DElhi, NovEmbEr 25 (iANS): India has made significant progress to improve coastal security after the 26/11 terror attack in which 10 Pakistani terrorists came undetected by sea to unleash mayhem in Mumbai, leaving 166 dead. But more efforts are needed to reduce the country’s vulnerability to a sea-borne terror strike, say the experts. The 2008 terror attack, which exposed chinks in coastal security, impelled the government to expedite measures to improve both physical and electronic surveillance along the country’s 7,516-kmlong coastline. There are nine states and four union territories along the coastline. The government moved on several fronts and set up joint operation centres. Vulnerable
spots and gaps along the coast were identified and proposals finalised to improve surveillance. Moves were also expedited for comprehensive registration of fishing boats, providing multipurpose national identity cards (MNICs) to the population in coastal villages and biometric cards to fishermen. The government also decided to set up National Command, Control, Communication and Intelligence Network (NC3I) for realtime maritime domain awareness, linking operations rooms of the Navy and Coast Guard. Security analyst and maritime observer Commodore (retd.) Ranjit Rai said the level of coastal security has risen to “a very high level” post 26/11. “The chances of another 26/11 like attack on a major port are
remote, but the quality of our actionable intelligence for Navy and Coast Guard is essential. The Navy has systems to react, and will have to rise to the occasion too,” Rai told IANS. Rai said 46 radar stations along the coast on lighthouses and promontories were planned under the first phase of the coastal surveillance network and at least 30 have been made operational. “These are equipped with state-of-the-art Danish Terma radars, Swedish automatic identification system (AIS), Canadian cameras and Israeli thermal imaging technology to track ships near the Indian coast day and night,” he said. He said the Navy has set up a Sagar
Prahari force of 1,000 sailors to patrol territorial waters up to 12 nautical miles. “Additional marine police stations have been propped up with four Joint Operational Centres (JOCs) at command headquarters of the Navy and
several key locations, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Taj Mahal Hotel, Chabad House and Leopold Cafe. The terror assault ended three days later when security forces killed nine of the gunmen. One of the attackers, Ajmal Kasab, was captured alive. He was hanged a year ago after a trial. Indian Navy spokesperson Captain P.V.S Satish said the country’s coastal and maritime security has seen a lot of consolidation over the last five years. “We have achieved a high level of coordination between the multiple agencies involved. The electronic means of surveillance that are critical to achieving coastal security are largely

in place,” Satish told IANS. “Maritime and coastal security is given the highest priority and closely monitored by the apex body, NCSMCS (National Committee on Strengthening Maritime and Coastal Security). We have come a long way from 26/11,” he said. The home ministry is also implementing a coastal security scheme in phases but its officials said states have to do much more to upgrade coastal police infrastructure. Former home secretary G.K. Pillai said there was reluctance among personnel from state police to take up marine police tasks. He said fishermen were like the “eyes and ears” of the security apparatus and young personnel from their community could be encouraged to join the marine police. Ajai Sahni, executive director
of the Institute for Conflict Management, said there was “much rhetorical focus” on strengthening coastal security after 2/11. “Fitful efforts notwithstanding, we remain as vulnerable to terrorist attacks along our coastline as we were in 2008,” he said. Hesaidthecoreofanyeffective system of coastal defence capacity was to detect illegal movement of ships and boats. “Unless there is a GPS tagging system to identify those whose presence is legitimate, it is impossible to identify the interloper,” he said. Vice Admiral (retd.) Sanjeev Bhasin said the government had identified shortcomings and deficiencies post-26/11. “A great deal of effort has been made to prevent ingress in future,” said Bhasin, who was flag officer commanding-in-chief Western Naval Command.

Tough road lies ahead after landmark nuke deal GENEVA, NoVEmbEr 25 (rEutErs): President Barack Obama has pulled off a historic deal with Iran on curbing its nuclear program but he and other global leaders now have tough work ahead turning an interim accord into a comprehensive agreement. In a sign of how difficult the coming talks will be, some differences emerged between U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and his Iranian counterpart in their public presentation of a key part of the deal - whether or not Iran preserved the right to enrich uranium. Obama also has to persuade its ally Israel, whose Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced the deal as a “historic mistake,” that the accord will reduce and not increase the threat from its arch foe Iran. And he has to sell the accord to skeptics in Congress, including some in his own Democratic Party, who have been pressing for more sanctions on Iran. The breakthrough accord was reached in the middle of the night at talks in Geneva between Iran, the United States, China, Russia, France, Britain and Germany. It won the critical endorsement of Iranian clerical Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khameini and marked a clear turn in a U.S. relationship with Iran that has been fraught since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, and vexed for years over the Iranian nuclear program. But nobody doubted that tough work lies ahead in moving on from the initial deal that allows a sixmonth period of limits to

Skin cancer more dangerous for men!
Los ANGELEs, NoVEmbEr 25 (IANs): Men are less likely to develop skin cancer than women but they are more likely to die from the disease due to lack of awareness, says Iain Mack of The MOLE Clinic. The facts about skin cancer has been revealed following Hugh Jackman’s scare. Recently, the Hollywood star revealed his skin cancer problem and how early detection made his life easier. Mack is the founder of The MOLE Clinic, an independent skin cancer screening and diagnostic centre, and a skin cancer survivor. “Men are less likely to develop skin cancer than women; however they are more likely to die from it due to lack of awareness. The number of British men who die each year of skin cancer melanoma has exceeded 1,000,” femalefirst. co.uk quoted Mack as saying. “Around 2,000 people die of melanoma a year and over 1,000 are men. The latest melanoma survival rates show that 78 percent of men and 91 percent of women are alive five years after diagnosis,” Mack added. Mack says that skin cancer usually appears as a new or changing mole or freckle. “Skin cancer has no cure, so it is important for the public to become more aware of their moles and spot any that might
be suspect. If a mole is new or changing it needs to be examined by an expert right away,” he said. Over half of people with moles, which are cancerous or at risk of skin cancer, have a history of sunburn or sunbed use, according to figures released by The MOLE Clinic. In the past 12 months, the London-based independent skin cancer screening clinic screened more than 10,000 moles. This is a record figure in the company’s 10 years of skin cancer screening. What are the preventive measures to avoid skin cancer? Virginia Hubbard, consultant dermatologist at London Bridge Hospital, recommends that people examine their skin every month. “People with fair skin, who burn easily, and people with lots of moles should take particular care as these people are more likely to develop a skin cancer. “Check your skin regularly. If in any doubt about any changes in a mole, seek expert help. Avoid sunburn of your skin. Use a sunscreen of at least SPF30, with UVA protection too. Use twice as much sunscreen as you think you need. Make sure you reapply every hour or so, especially if sweating or after swimming,” said Hubbard.
consistent with practical needs, with agreed limits on scope and level of enrichment activities.” Before heading to Geneva, Zarif had a crucial meeting with Khamenei in the presence of Rouhani, a senior member of the Iranian delegation said. “The leader underlined the importance of respecting Iran’s right to enrich uranium and that he was backing the delegation as long as they respected this red line,” said the delegate. What emerged in the text on Sunday was wording that both sides could live with. Speaking on Iran’s Press TV, Zarif said the deal
Kennedy in Japan tsunami zone
IsHINomAKI, NoVEmbEr 25 (AP): Just 10 days after arriving in Japan as the new U.S. ambassador, Caroline Kennedy is making a twoday visit to areas devastated by the 2011 tsunami to meet survivors and highlight America’s commitment to supporting its ally. The appointment of the daughter of President John F. Kennedy has been popular among Japanese, and it was no different in the industrial port city of Ishinomaki, where residents stood in the wind and pouring rain waiting for a glimpse of the new ambassador. She visited a park with a wide vista of the city’s tsunami-ravaged waterfront before heading to an elementary school, where students performed skits in English and sang “Happy Birthday” to Kennedy, who turns 56 on Wednesday. Kennedy has so far stuck to carefully scripted events, mostly avoiding interviews as she adapts to a more public role after living a largely private life. Thousands of people turned out last week to see her ride
in a horse-drawn carriage to present her diplomatic credentials to Emperor Akihito. The Japanese media have praised her low-key style, which many see as appropriate for a working mom who has had little to do with politics, let alone diplomacy, throughout her career. She could become the most influential U.S. ambassador to Japan since Edwin Reischauer, who was President Kennedy’s envoy 50 years ago, said Nancy Snow, an American visiting professor at Keio University in Tokyo. “She is primarily a softpower ambassador who will play to her strengths in culture, education and shared values between the U.S. and Japan,” Snow said. “She will highlight her many roles that resonate here: wife, mother, public service and humanitarian advocate.” The visit to the disaster region fits with those priorities. Kennedy tried her hand at calligraphy and exchanged high-fives with schoolchildren as she toured the northeastern region, about 340 kilo-
meters north of Tokyo. She brushed in black ink the Japanese character for the word “tomo,” or friend. She then sat down to read “Where the Wild Things Are,” the classic children’s tale by American author Maurice Sendak, to a sixth-grade class. Her visit was also a tribute to the U.S. “Tomodachi,” or friendship, program that provided initial rescue and relief and longer-term support for survivors of the disaster. She presented 112 books to the Mangokuura Elementary School, donated in memory of Taylor Anderson, an American who died in the tsunami while teaching at the school and others in Ishinomaki. Rebuilding has barely begun. Makeshift stores, restaurants, car washes and laundries have been set up in areas flattened by the tsunami, which was triggered by a magnitude-9 earthquake. The disaster left more than 18,000 people dead or missing, and tens of thousands of people remain in temporary, prefabricated housing more than 2 1/2 years later.
CRITICS AT HOME AND ABROAD The deal also leaves Washington with the task if patching strained ties with its staunch Middle East ally Israel. Obama telephoned Netanyahu to reassure him that Washington would continue to stand by Israel and to suggest that the United States and Israel should quickly start consultations on the Iranian nuclear issue. Obama - who raised the idea of a rapprochement with Iran when he was campaigning ahead of his first presidential election win in 2008 - will also have to deal with critics at home. On Sunday, even some of his fellow Democrats were strongly critical of the pact. Senator Charles Schumer of New York, the No. 3 Democrat in the Senate and a Banking Committee member said: “A fairer agreement would have coupled a reduction in sanctions with a proportionate reduction in Iranian nuclear capability.” But it seemed likely that Congress will give him room to see if the agreement works. Democrats such as Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations

Small brain part crucial in decision-making: Study
toroNto, NoVEmbEr 25 (IANs): In a finding that could be important for treatment of depression, scientists have found that one of the smallest parts of the brain may be the key to decision making skills, says a study. A University of British Columbia study published today in Nature Neuroscience says the lateral
habenula, a region of the brain linked to depression and avoidance behaviors, has been largely misunderstood and may be integral in cost-benefit decisions. “These findings clarify the brain processes involved in the important decisions that we make on a daily basis, from choosing between job offers to deciding which house or
car to buy,” says Prof. Stan Floresco of UBC’s Dept. of Psychology and Brain Research Centre (BRC). “It also suggests that the scientific community has misunderstood the true functioning of this mysterious, but important, region of the brain.” In the study, scientists trained lab rats to choose between a consistent small
I’m not a particularly ideological person
sEAttLE, NoVEmbEr 25 (rEutErs): President Barack Obama, on a fundraising swing in Seattle on Sunday, described himself as “not a particularly ideological person” despite ongoing political clashes with Republicans over healthcare, the economy, and im-
was an opportunity for the West to restore trust with Iran, adding Tehran would expand cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N. nuclear watchdog, to address what he called some concerns. “In the final step, the (uranium) enrichment process will be accepted and at the same time all the sanctions will be lifted,” Zarif said. However, on the ABC News program “This Week,” Kerry stressed that such a right would be limited and would come about as a result of future negotiations. He said that under the
Committee and is known as a hawk on Iran, made clear that any new sanctions would include a six-month window before they took effect. That would allow time to see if Iran is sticking by the pact. Senators have been discussing for months imposing even tighter Iran sanctions, which could anger Tehran and put Sunday’s interim deal reached in Geneva in jeopardy. And pro-Israel lobbying organizations - among the most effective interest groups in Washington - have failed so far to persuade lawmakers to tighten the sanctions screw on Iran. The agreement does not need to be ratified by Congress and Obama is using his executive power to temporarily suspend some existing U.S. sanctions on Iran. The deal halts Iran’s progress on its nuclear program, including construction of the Arak research reactor. It will neutralize Iran’s stockpile of uranium refined to a fissile concentration of 20 percent, which is close to the level needed for weapons, allow increased U.N. nuclear inspections, and halt uranium enrichment over a fissile purity of 5 percent. In return the accord grants about $7 billion in potential relief from sanctions. It will allow a potential access to $1.5 billion in trade in gold and precious metals and the suspension of some sanctions on Iran’s auto sector and petrochemical exports, and also give Iran access to some $4.2 billion in sales from its reduced oil exports.
migration reform. Fresh from a deal with Iran over its nuclear program, Obama started a western swing on Sunday that will include stops in California to raise money for Democrats, tout his record on the economy, and push for reform of
U.S. immigration laws. At the Seattle fundraiser the president noted the National Security Agency revelations, the mass shooting of children at a Connecticut school, and events in the Middle East were all reasons people were discouraged in the United States. He left out healthcare reform from that list. The rollout of Obama’s signature health law has been plagued by a glitch-filled website and cancellations of some insurance plans that the administration had said would not be in jeopardy. The problems have hurt Obama and his fellow Democrats in the polls. Despite those problems, the White House expressed optimism on Sunday that Democrats could regain control of the House of Representatives, which has blocked
many of Obama’s top policy priorities - on ideological grounds, Democrats would say. The president called that chamber a barrier to progress in his remarks and said there would be broad consensus on issues such as immigration reform if politics were stripped away. “I’m not a particularly ideological person,” he said, saying pragmatism was necessary to advance the values that were important to him. Republicans view the president as very ideological. They view his healthcare reform as a government overreach and are hoping to capitalize on its shaky rollout to keep control of the House and wrest control of the Senate away from Democrats in next year’s midterm elections.
reward (one food pellet) or a potentially larger reward (four food pellets) that appeared sporadically. Like humans, the rats tended to choose larger rewards when costs-in this case, the amount of time they had to wait before receiving food-were low and preferred smaller rewards when such risks were higher. Previous studies sug-
gest that turning off the lateral habenula would cause rats to choose the larger, riskier reward more often, but that was not the case. Instead, the rats selected either option at random, no longer showing the ability to choose the best option for them. The findings have important implications for depression treatment. “Deep
brain stimulation - which is thought to inactivate the lateral habenula -- has been reported to improve depressive symptoms in humans,” Floresco says. “But our findings suggest these improvements may not be because patients feel happier. They may simply no longer care as much about what is making them feel depressed.”

oKLAHoMA CITY, NoveMber 25 (reuTers): With only one victory under his belt this season, Utah Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin decided to shake things up. Not only did he change his starting lineup, but he said he wanted to slow down the pace his team played at. Neither seemed to work Sunday when the Jazz traveled to Oklahoma City. Utah matched a season low in points scored as they fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder 95-73 at the Chesapeake Energy Arena. "It's very frustrating," Corbin said. "Against this ball club here on their floor, I felt we would have more energy right from the beginning of the game. But (Oklahoma City) was the aggressor." Forward Serge Ibaka scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to help pace the Thunder. Forward Kevin Durant added 19 points on 3-for-9 shooting to go along with nine rebounds. Guard Jeremy Lamb came off the bench to score 15 points in the win.
MILAN, NoveMber 25 (AP): Juventus eased to a 2-0 win at Livorno on Sunday to provisionally take over the top spot in Serie A, while Fiorentina fell to a surprise 1-0 defeat at Udinese. Fernando Llorente and Carlos Tevez scored in the second half for Juventus. The two time-defending champion moved two points above Roma, which hosts Cagliari on Monday. "I dedicate it to our fans who always support us," Llorente said. "We have to look at ourselves and continue doing everything the coach asks of us, as we are doing. I think we are a strong team." Tomas Heurtaux scored for Udinese, which had lost four of its past five matches. Inter Milan missed the chance to draw level with third-place Napoli as it hit the crossbar twice but drew 1-1 at relegationthreatened Bologna. Elsewhere, a stoppage-time equalizer saw Lazio snatch a 1-1 draw at 10-man Sampdoria and spoil coach Sinisa Mihajlovic's first match in charge. "It's never nice to concede right at the end, but the wheels keep on turning," Mihajlovic said. "I'm disappointed for the lads, they proved to themselves and others how you have to play when you wear the Sampdoria shirt." Sampdoria played the entire second half with 10 men after Nenad Krsticic was sent off. Also, teenage forward Domenico Berardi struck again as Sassuolo beat Atalanta 2-0 while Torino crushed Catania 4-1. Juventus faced something of a crisis in defense, with Stephan Lichtsteiner and Andrea Barzagli injured and Angelo Ogbonna and Leonardo Bonucci out sus-
"I think we were really focused from start to finish," guard Thabo Sefolosha said. "We put a good game together. And that was important, especially in front of our home crowd." Utah had only two players reach double figures in scoring. Center Eric Kanter and forward Rudy Gobert each scored 10 points to lead the Jazz off the bench. Forward Richard Jefferson and center Derrick Favors posted eight points each. The Jazz (1-14) were on pace to set a season low in points until guard Alec Burks hit a free throw with 8.9 seconds left in the game to match the 73 points it scored Nov. 8 against Chicago. Utah didn't help its cause at all on the night. It shot 39 percent from the field and was just 13-for-29 from the freethrow line. The Jazz were also outrebounded 46-33. Despite playing shorthanded, Oklahoma City started its game against Utah in a business-like manner. Ibaka put it on display in the first quarter when he scored six points and grabbed five rebounds.
That included him flying in to grab a rebound and tip dunk back over the Jazz front line. Oklahoma City (9-3) held a 22-13 advantage after the first quarter. "When you are not scoring, it puts a lot of pressure on your defense to stop a team to keep the game close," Utah fForward Marvin Williams said. "Unfortunately for us, the team we had to stop was OKC. That's how a game can get away from you pretty quickly." Utah tried to keep the game close by going to guard Gordon Howard and center Derrick Favors. But the Thunder's defense on the Jazz's top two players was solid. They combined for 10 points and 10 rebounds in the first half. "We were really good at putting our hands on the ball and helping each other, and protecting the paint," Durant said. "If we do that, we really give ourselves a chance, no matter how bad we shoot." Oklahoma City got production from every player that touched the floor.
to penalize everybody who passed there, not just me. It's really unacceptable and I feel sorry because the race could have been completely different." Massa, whose last win was at Interlagos in 2008 when he missed out on the title to Britain's Lewis Hamilton by a single point, said Alonso had told him before the race that he would help him to the best possible send-off. "He just came to say wherever you are behind me, I let you by," said the Brazilian, who is moving to Williams after eight years at Ferrari. Alonso, who had already made sure of second place overall in the championship, finished the race in third place and paid tribute afterwards to his departing team mate."He's been a fantastic team mate and even if we continue to see one another in the paddock, I will miss the relationship we have had.

The visitors broke the deadlock shortly after the hour mark when Llorente volleyed Paul Pogba's cross into the top corner with a magnificent strike. Llorente turned provider in the 75th to set up Tevez for a low drive into the bottom corner. Andrea Coda almost scored an own goal to extend Juventus'

Inter is eight points behind Juventus and two behind Napoli following the surprise draw. Bologna took the lead in the 12th minute following a swift counter attack. Jonathan Cristaldo raced down the right flank before rolling
the ball across to Kone, who hadn't been picked up as he burst through the middle and sidefooted home. Former Bologna Saphir Taider could have been sent off as he was fortunate not to receive a second yellow card in the buildup to the goal for a shirt tug on Alessandro Diamanti. sAo PAuLo, NoveMber 25 (reuTers): Felipe Massa cursed race stewards for ruining his Ferrari farewell in front of his home fans at the Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday. The Sao Paulo driver had gone from ninth on the starting grid to fourth, with every chance of team mate Fernando Alonso handing him third as a parting gift, when he was given a drivethrough penalty for fully crossing a white line at the pit lane entry. "Unbelievable, unacceptable," he had shouted over the team radio when told. He shook his fists as he drove through the pitlane and was still incensed after finishing the race in seventh place. "I'm really disappointed," he told reporters in the Interlagos paddock. "For sure they (the stewards) didn't do the right thing. If you really need to do that, you need

Welcomed to the garage before the race to the sounds of 'Waltzing Matilda', with the Australian flag hung over his car and 'Thank You Mark' written on his pit board, the last farewell was always going to be emotional even if Webber was a long way from reaching for the tissues. "I was quite overcome with some emotion, to be honest," he said. "Just that moment of helmets on, stepping in the car...I did it but it was actually the strongest emotion I've probably had all day." On the podium he joined Vettel, who graciously insisted his team mate be interviewed first, and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, one of his best friends in the paddock. "To finish on the podium with those two guys, they have been the best of this generation and I've raced them a lot...meant a lot to me in showing I could still drive well at the end of my career," said Webber. "I'm over the worst of it today in terms of the roller-coaster of emotions, I'm happy to leave here tonight. And yeah, that's it."
Before the race the Australian left no doubt he was more than ready for his next challenge racing Le Mans sportscars with Porsche and was leaving at the right time. The man who might have won the championship in 2010, and who leaves with 42 podium positions and 13 poles, recognised that what he might have lacked in outright speed he had made up for with sheer hard work and determination. "Maybe I did not have the most absolute natural flair and talent but I knew that if I grafted and worked hard I'd soon get awesome results," he said in a Red Bull review of his career. "I also smashed a lot of guys who had more talent than me because they didn't work as hard as me," added the former Williams and Jaguar racer. "I learned that about myself. How important it was to graft and just get my head down. I've been doing that for most of my career. "The results I've had in F1 have been great but it's about the journey as well and I've had an amazing journey."

mark Webber leaves f1 with wind in his hair
sAo PAuLo, NoveMber 25 (reuTers): Mark Webber drove out of Formula One with the wind in his hair, a smile on his face and Red Bull overalls soaked in champagne after one final podium celebration at the season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday. The Australian finished runner-up, equalling his best result of a year dominated by race winner and quadruple world champion team mate Sebastian Vettel, at Interlagos in his 215th and last grand prix. The voice of Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, himself only three years older than his 37-year-old driver, came over the radio as Webber crossed the line for his final competitive lap. "One more lap Mark, enjoy it," he said, and the chisel-jawed veteran made sure he savoured every moment - for once concentrating on driving slowly rather than fast. After taking the chequered flag, Webber removed his helmet halfRed Bull driver Mark Webber of Australia, holds an Australian flag at the podium of the Brazilian way through his slowing down lap to show his face to the crowd and Formula One Grand Prix at the Interlagos racetrack in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Nov. 24. marshals and allow himself to hear the applause and feel the breeze. "In this sport it's not always you have the personal touch," he told BBC television. "We have helmets on all the time so they don't always see a driver in a Formula One car without a helmet. "It was nice to get it off, see the marshals, see the fans, it was a really nice thing for me just to experience. I heard a lot of noises I don't normally hear with the helmet on." Webber, famously straighttalking ever since his astonishing debut in 2002 when he finished fifth for tiny Minardi in his home race, has always been one for the direct, no-nonsense approach both in and outside the sport and Sunday was no exception.
STRONGEST EMOTION The winner of nine grands prix in 12 seasons, including two Monaco Grand Prix victories but none this year, said the hardest part of the day had been just steeling himself to get into the car at the start.

have done it again, voting her the American Music Awards artist of the year for a third time. Swift won Sunday night's top honor, giving her a leading four trophies as fans celebrated the women of pop music. Swift didn't perform, but she was a constant presence on stage and the camera alighted on her as she danced to stars like Kendrick Lamar and Luke Bryan. Her win came after Katy Perry dazzled with her show-opening performance, Lady Gaga found another inventive way to grab your attention, Rihanna starred with her mother and Miley Cyrus closed the performances with the assistance of a giant lip-syncing CGI kitty on her song "Wrecking Ball." "I'm really out of breath," Swift said after taking the stage in a sequined mini-dress. "I was really going hard with the 'Wrecking Ball' thing." The 23-year-old pop star also won country album of the year for "Red" and favorite female country artist and pop/rock artist. She spoke directly to her fans as she picked up her final award of the night. "My lucky number is 13, and so far you guys have made 2013 the most magical year of my life so far," she said. "I cannot thank you enough. This validates that if you voted for this that we are heartbroken the same way and we fall in love the same way and we're happy the same way. And the fact
means ... we're pretty much in it together, aren't we?" Justin Timberlake was next with three wins — soul/R&B album, soul/R&B male artist and pop/rock male artist. One Direction and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis won two awards and Rihanna was given the AMA's first Icon Award to go with her win as favorite soul/R&B female artist. Rihanna and her mother took center stage midway through the show when Monica Fenty presented her pop star daughter with the first Icon Award at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. "Can we talk about how cute Rihanna's mom is?" Justin Timberlake asked while accepting one of his three awards, before affecting a Caribbean accent. "She's so proud of the Icon. I am too, Rihanna, I love you." Fenty told Rihanna how proud she was of her daughter's success, saying, "I know the journey in your career has not always been an easy one." Nickelodeon star Ariana Grande was named favorite new artist, Florida Georgia Line won single of the year for "Cruise" with Nelly in something of a surprise, Luke Bryan won favorite male country artist, and favorite rap/ hip-hop act Macklemore & Ryan Lewis used their rap/hip-hop album acceptance speech to send a message of tolerance. Ben Haggerty, the rapper known as Macklemore, accepted the award for favorite rap/hiphop album, then quoted Martin

"Due to the fact that we are in Florida tonight accepting this award I want to acknowledge Trayvon Martin and the hundreds and hundreds of kids each year that are dying due to racial profiling and the violence that follows it," he said. Florida became a focal point after Martin's killer was freed under the state's stand your ground law. It was the first win of the night for Macklemore and Lewis, whose album "The Heist" has been an unexpected hit and made them the AMA's top nominees with six. Katy Perry opened the show looking like a princess out of a classic Japanese painting. Dressed in a traditional Japanese dress, Perry's show-starting performance of "Unconditionally" included dozens of colorfully clad dancers waved fans, shadow danced in front of rice-paper screens and played the drums. One Direction was at times drowned out by screams during an understated performance of "Story of My Life." Timberlake strapped on an acoustic guitar and played a soulfully raucous version of "Drink You Away." And Jennifer Lopez absolutely nailed the elaborate dance numbers during her tribute to Salsa queen Celia Cruz, taking two dozen dancers through their paces while wearing a shimmering silver dress. She winked at the crowd as she finished the num-

Kelly played the president and Gaga a Marilyn Monroe-like mistress. Cyrus wasn't quite as over the top as her previous appearances this year but is likely to be talked about just as much. The camera stayed on Cyrus and the lip-
syncing tabby that floated through space throughout, an odd duet that ended when the cat winked and stuck out its tongue — Cyrus' signature move.

SAO PAULO, NOvember 25 (AP): Sebastian Vettel won Formula One's season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday, matching Michael Schumacher's record of 13 victories in a year and equaling the nine consecutive wins of Alberto Ascari. Vettel's Red Bull teammate Mark Webber was second in his final F1 race and Fernando Alonso of Ferrari was third. The win capped an impressive year by Vettel, who had already broken Schumacher's 2004 mark of seven straight wins in a year at the United States GP last week. Schumacher's 13 wins also came in 2004. Ascari's mark of nine straight victories was achieved in the 1952 and '53 seasons. "I think it is very difficult for me to realize, probably now and in the next couple of weeks, what we have achieved again, and in particular this year at the end of the season," Vettel said. "At the end of the day, as I see it now, it's just a number. But hopefully one day, when I've got less hair and (I'm) chubby, then it's probably something nice to look back." The 26-yearold Vettel clinched the title at the Indian GP, becoming the youngest driver to win four world championships. "I'm actually quite sad that this season comes to an end," Vettel said. "The car has been phenomenal. It just kept getting better. I'm extremely proud." Vettel, who had already wrapped up a fourth

crossed the line 10.4 seconds in front of Webber. "Yes, we did it," Vettel said on his radio before his now-traditional donut celebration of spinning the car. Vettel had to overcome
a slow pit stop near the end of the race but remained in front thanks to a big lead over Webber. The team changed strategy at the last minute and only had three tires ready when Vettel
came in. Webber was right behind and had to wait until the crew finished the work on Vettel's car. Webber, who had won two of the last four races in Brazil, took his helmet off
as he returned to the pits and waved to the crowd. The team wrote "Awesome. Thank you Mark," on the pit sign as the Australian crossed the finish line. "It was a very good finish to

vADODArA, NOvember 25 (PTI): Veteran pacer Zaheer Khan made a comeback to India's Test side after close to a year but opener Gautam Gambhir was ignored as the selectors on Monday announced the squads for the Test and ODI tour of South Africa starting December 5. The 35-yearold Zaheer, who had been battling fitness issues and was even dropped from the BCCI's list of contracted players, was chosen in the 17-member Test squad after taking 13 wickets in three Ranji Trophy matches at an average of 19.84 this season. Gambhir, however, had no such luck as the opener, who has been downgraded to group B in the list of contracted players, failed to find a place despite a healthy average of 74 plus in the ongoing Ranji season. "His name was discussed, in fact, we discussed a lot of things. Even skipper MS Dhoni was consulted and all the players were se-

The month-long tour featuring three ODIs followed by two Tests is India's first international assignment after the retirement of iconic batsman Sachin Tendulkar. Baroda batsman Ambati Rayudu, a seasoned domestic player, has been named in both the Test and ODI squads, while veterans like Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh
continued to remain on the sidelines. The 28-year-old Rayudu, who is currently a part of the team in the ongoing ODI series against the West Indies, has played four one-dayers for India. There were no major surprises in both the squads with the selectors opting to go in for a pace-heavy bowling attack considering the conditions in South Africa. Pacer Ishant Sharma, who has been struggling for form, was retained in both the squads. The gangling
speedster took a match-haul of nine wickets in Delhi's win over Haryana in a Ranji Trophy match on Sunday. Another fast bowler Umesh Yadav, who had been dropped due to poor form in the recent series against Australia and West Indies, has been recalled in both the Test and ODI squads largely because of his ability to bowl fast. An off-colour Yuvraj Singh has managed o hold on to his ODI spot despite having an indifferent show against Australia and the ongoing series against West Indies. Rookie Haryana pacer Mohit Sharma has also been included in the 16-member ODI squad. Wriddhiman Saha, a regular in the overseas Test tours, was retained as a reserve wicketkeeper, pipping Tamil Nadu's Dinesh Karthik and Gujarat's Parthiv Patel. The Test squad has seven specialist batsmen, two wicketkeepers, five pacers, two spinners and one all-rounder in Ravindra Jadeja.

CHeNNAI, NOvember 25 (TNN): Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday awarded the new world chess championship to Norwegian prodigy Magnus Carlsen, who dethroned India's Vishwanathan Anand, a five-time world champion in the world chess championship 2013, held in Chennai last week. At a prize distribution ceremony held in Hotel
Hyatt Regency here, Jayalalithaa gave away the winner's gold trophy to Carlsen, amid loud cheers from supporters. She also honoured the 22-year-old Norwegian with an olive garland from the Nilgiri hills, while World Chess Federation president Kirsan Illyumzhinov presented him a gold medal. Anand, who lost the crown in his home city, was
rewarded with prize money of Rs 6.03 crore and a silver medal. Carlsen became the new world chess champion after defeating Anand by 6.5-3.5 in 12 game match held between November 7 and 22. The crucial tenth game went in a draw and favoured Carlsen to claim the title. Later, speaking to TOI, Anand's parents, Vishwanathan and Susheela con-
my career," Webber said. "It was a great journey, one of which I'm proud of." Webber will be joining Porsche in a sports car series in 2014. The 37-year-old Australian spent 12 seasons
in F1, winning nine times and reaching the podium 42 times in 215 starts. His second place on Sunday allowed him to finish third in the drivers' standings, repeating his feat in 2010 and '11. Jenson Button was fourth for McLaren's best finish of the season. Rosberg was fifth after starting behind Vettel on the front row and Mexico's Sergio Perez finished sixth after starting 19th in his final race with McLaren. No McLaren driver had reached the podium or finished higher than fifth coming into the season finale. Alonso, who had already secured second place in the drivers' standings, said he was hoping for a wet track at the end of the race. "Unfortunately the rain didn't come," he said. "We were more competitive in wet conditions. It seemed it would start raining any moment but it didn't." It was the first time this weekend that drivers raced on a dry track at Interlagos after the three practice sessions and qualifying were run in wet conditions. Light rain fell near the end of the race but it wasn't enough to significantly affect the track conditions. Lewis Hamilton, who had a flat right rear tire on his Mercedes after contact with Valtteri Bottas of Williams, finished ninth. Hamilton received a drive through penalty for causing the collision. Mercedes was still able to hold on to second place in the constructors' championship, finishing ahead of Ferrari and Lotus. Red Bull had already clinched the title.
after heated first test brISbANe, NOvember 25 (AP): The series that has long been described as the 'Battle for the Ashes' has now become the war of words. Australia skipper Michael Clarke reportedly will be fined by the International Cricket Council for using an obscene word while advising England's Jimmy Anderson to brace himself to have his arm broken by a short ball from Mitchell Johnson as the tense first test came to a climax on Sunday evening. Reports of the fine emerged Monday, after some players had left Brisbane and after some parting words from Australian opener David Warner. Australia won the Ashes series opener by 381 runs with a day to spare, ending a run of nine tests without a win in Australian crick-
et's longest drought since 1986. It was England's first loss in a year and came after two batting collapses, with the tourists skittled for 136 in the first innings and 179 in the second. And it ended with players trading insults on and off the field. Warner used a news conference to accuse England batsman Jonathan Trott of being weak and scared of facing shortpitched bowling, and didn't back down from his provocative remarks as he was getting ready to leave Brisbane. "I made those comments for a reason," Warner said. "Look, yesterday, the bounce and pace got to them again. "It's Ashes cricket. Probably went a little bit too far with the comments, but it's cricket and now it's in the back of their mind."
gratulated the Norwegian. "Carlsen has done a good job," was all his mother had to say, but not without a praise of word for her son. "Anand has proved himself five times. I don't have to say anything now." His father, Vishwanathan, a retired general manager of Southern Railways, said the event was very well organized. Though disappointment was writ large on his face, Vishwanathan said, "Anand tried his best and probably next time." An official release from NIIT, chairman Rajendra S Pawar said that NIIT and Anand would continue to work towards taking Indian chess to greater heights. "Anand has made chess a national movement by initiating 1.65 million students into the game of chess through our joint initiative - the NIIT MindChampions' Academy," Pawar said in an official release. This comes against the backdrop of speculations that the Indian champ would be dropped as brand ambassador of NIIT, a brand, which he had been promoting for some years now.
