nEW DELhi, January 28 (ianS): Aware and engaged youth are the force that can transform India, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Tuesday, urging people to be the change they wanted to see in society. “Aware and engaged youth are a force that can transform India and enable it to get rid of poverty, disease, underdevelopment and ignorance. For that, we must follow what Mahatma Gandhi said... We must become the change we want to see,” the prime minister said in his address at the National Cadet Corps (NCC) rally here. He said the world was getting increasingly interconnected and was changing rapidly. “It is only natural, therefore, that there is tremendous yearning amongst our youth to transform our society for the better. The youth today are not only aware and ready to articulate their views, but are also willing and prepared to participate in shaping our polity and society in a way that responds to their aspirations. This is an extremely positive development,” the prime minister said. Describing his participation in the rally as “an annual rite of renewal” for him for the past 10 years, the prime minister said
mumbai, January 28 (ianS): Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan said Tuesday its decision to withdraw currency notes issued before 2005 was aimed at curbing counterfeits and had nothing to do with curbing black money or tax evasion. “It is not intended to get at black money, tax evasion etc... this is a technical action,” Rajan said at a media conference after releasing the third quarter review of the monetary policy, adding that it was aimed at curbing counterfeits. However, the governor clarified that the statement should not be seen in the context that the RBI supports black money or tax evasion. “That is not to say that we support black money.” “We have to keep improving the security
features. Which is why the notes will be withdrawn,” he added. The RBI last week announced that the cunotes issued before 2005 will be completely withdrawn from circulation by the end of the current financial year ending March 31. From April 1, 2014 public would be required to approach banks for exchanging these notes. However, the RBI has clarified that the notes issued before 2005 will continue to be legal tender and can be exchanged at banks. From July 1, 2014, however, to exchange more than 10 pieces of Rs.500 and Rs.1,000 notes, non-customers will have to furnish proof of identity and residence to the bank branch in which she/he wants to exchange the notes.

The communiqué clarified that currently the number of Rongmei people enumerated for such a certificate stands at 1313, all whose names and details appear in the Committee Report. The report recommended that Rongmei people from the three districts of Kohima, Dimapur and Peren, as well as their direct descendants be given the status of Indigenous Rongmei Naga Inhabitants of the State of Nagaland “to enable them to avail all the benefits of reservation to pursue employment and education.” The Committee report “is available for the scrutiny of any members of the public as may so desire.” The Government of Nagaland also stated that the recognition of Rongmei as a Naga tribe was taken up after the recommendation of the Zeliangrong Baudi (ZB) Zeliang People’s Organization (ZPO) and Naga Hoho. However, noted the Government, “ZPO chose to backtrack and took recourse to legal means against the recognition and a case was filed in the High Court vide WP ( C) 4519/2012 and the matter is now sub-judice and the Government is awaiting the final verdict of the Hon’ble High Court.”
Nagaland govt clarifies on Currency note withdrawal aimed Rongmei tribe recognition at curbing counterfeits, says RBI Kohima, January 28 (mExn): The Government of Nagaland has reiterated its Cabinet decision to recognize Rongmei as a Naga tribe and that a Scheduled Tribe Certificate and Indigenous Tribe Certificate will be issued only to those members of the Rongmei tribe who, or whose, ancestors were enumerated in the 1963 electoral roll of the State and whose names are enumerated in the report of the Committee dated May 2012. This number presently stands at 1313. In the wake of growing confusion over the issue of the recognition of Rongmei tribe in Nagaland, the Government took suo moto cognizance of the issue and informed through a press communiqué from its Home Department that the Cabinet “accepted the recommendation of the Committee and agreed to recognize Rongmei as one of the Naga tribes. However, in view of the fact that Rongmei tribe is also one of the indigenous tribes of neighbouring Manipur and Assam States, Scheduled Tribe Certificate and Indigenous Tribe Certificate will be issued only to those members of the Rongmei tribe, who or whose ancestors were enumerated in the 1963 electoral roll of the State and whose names are enumerated in the report of the Committee dated May 2012.” The Cabinet, on July
cipline, Manmohan Singh said there is no better training ground for the responsibilities that await the youth in the years to come. “The NCC embodies fully the values important for our nation’s unity,” he said. He said the discipline, vigour and energy of the cadets had inspired all those who witnessed them during the Republic Day parade. “They embody leadership, duty, courage and service. I am confident that with the destiny of our nation in the hands of youth such as our NCC cadets, the future of our country is
bright,” he said. The prime minister said the NCC makes the nation proud and has made immense contributions towards nation-building and promoting social harmony. “It has brought together people from diverse backgrounds, religions, cultures and languages and inculcated in them the common values of humanism, patriotism and selfless service. It thus truly symbolises the philosophy of unity in diversity, which forms the foundation of our nationhood, he said. Recalling the “service and sacrifice” by cadets during natural disasters, he said the NCC members also contributed to awareness drives on issues like AIDS, female foeticide and environment protection. He complimented the NCC Boy Cadets for scaling Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak in their firstever expedition. “It is a tribute to their teamwork, planning, stamina and skill. The nation is proud of their achievements,” he said. Different sections of the Ao society led by the church, the Ao Senden (Ao Hoho), women organizations, village councils and others today converged at Impur, ABAM Mission Centre, and deliberated on the topic of ‘Liquor Prohibition and Clean Election’ at a consultative programme. The consultative programme was convened by the ABAM Social Concern Committee. (ABAM or Ao Baptist Church Council is the apex church organization of the Ao Baptist churches.) Resource persons, Excise Commissioner Maongwati Aier and Advocate Benja Namo, enlightened the congregation on the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP)

Act and also on Clean Election. The most important feature of the day was the group discussion and the ‘Finding Committee Report’ and its resolution to carry out a set of works towards this end. The ‘Finding Committee Report’ (written in Ao) stated that in the present generation “every believer” should play a responsible role, and resolved that every Ao organization or society should start a “collective mass movement against socio-political evils” in the land. This task was entrusted to the ABAM Social Concern Committee.
Expressing serious concern about alcoholism in the society, the meeting resolved that different churches under ABAM would start a concrete ministry to help alcoholics in their respective churches. The meeting also resolved to push for the Nagaland State Government to include a subject in the school curriculum on alcohol and drug abuse and its consequences to educate the children. Taking cognizance that the implementation of the NLTP Act since its enactment 24 years ago has become more challenging, the meeting also resolved to demand
that the Government recruit more excise personnel to implement the Act more effectively. The NLTP Act was passed by the Nagaland Government in the year 1989, which declared Nagaland as a ‘dry state’. 24 years since its enactment, Naga society continues to battle with the issue of alcoholism and flow of alcohol in Nagaland State. On ‘Clean Election Campaign,’ the meeting resolved that if a voter is not given ‘Election Voters’ Photo ID Card,’ the polling station would not be allowed to open. The meeting also resolved that the church and different social organizations would work in cohesion to educate citizens on their “birthright.” Further, the meeting resolved that those propagating crimes against women would be forever treated as outcasts from the society.
