WHO reveals worldwide threat to public health

GeNeva, MaY 1 (IaNS): A new report by the World Health Organisation - its first to globally look at antimicrobial resistance, including antibiotic resistance - reveals that this serious threat is no longer a prediction for the future but is happening right now in every region of the world and has the potential to affect anyone, of any age, in any country. Antibiotic resistance when bacteria change so

antibiotics no longer work in people who need them to treat infections - is now a major threat to public health. “Without urgent, coordinated action by many stakeholders, the world is headed for a post-antibiotic era, in which common infections and minor injuries which have been treatable for decades can once again kill,” says Keiji Fukuda, WHO’s assistant directorgeneral for health security. “Effective antibiotics

have been one of the pillars allowing us to live longer, live healthier, and benefit from modern medicine. Unless we take significant actions to improve efforts to prevent infections and also change how we produce, prescribe and use antibiotics, the world will lose more and more of these global public health goods and the implications will be devastating,” he added. The results are cause for high concern, document-

ing resistance to antibiotics, especially “last resort” antibiotics, in all regions of the world. The report reveals that key tools to tackle antibiotic resistance, such as basic systems to track and monitor the problem, show gaps or do not exist in many countries. While some countries have taken important steps in addressing the problem, every country and individual needs to do more.

CheNNaI, MaY 1 (IaNS): A young woman working in an IT company was killed and 14 people were injured Thursday when two bombs exploded on a train after it entered the Chennai Central station, police said. The low intensity explosions in quick succession occurred in two coaches of the Bangalore-Guwahati express train around 7.15 a.m., triggering panic at the busy station. Many fled in panic and the wounded cried out in pain, and the young woman lay dead. Two of the injured suffered serious injuries. Southern Railway general manager Rakesh Mishra identified the dead woman as 22-year-old Swathi from Guntur in Andhra Pradesh. Swathi was an employee of an IT company in Bangalore. She was going to Andhra Pradesh. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh condemned the “barbaric act” and said they “highlight the desperation and cowardice of those responsible”. “No efforts should be spared to bring the perpetrators to justice,” he said. The blasts came barely two days after

a Sri Lankan, Mohammed Zakir Hussain, was arrested on charge of plotting to damage vital installations in the state. “The blasts occurred in coaches S4 and S5 of the Bangalore-Guwahati train,” Inspector General of Police (Railways) Seema Agarwal told IANS. She said the injured were admitted to a government hospital and the two coaches had been separated from the train for investigation. A man at the station told IANS: “The blast was not very loud. It is only after we saw people running away from the train that we learnt something was wrong.” He said the rail coaches were not badly damaged but the seat where the dead woman had been seated bore the brunt of the explosion. The Chennai Central station handles some 200 trains every day. Railway porters told reporters they were headed towards the incoming train when they heard the blasts. Frightened passengers immediately rushed out of the coaches. The porters were the first to provide help to the injured. They also helped passengers to get out. The train was scheduled to reach Chennai at

5.40 a.m. but was running late by an hour and a half. Police officer Agarwal said it was too early to say what explosives were used. “We will be checking the (antecedents of) passengers in the two coaches later,” she said. After detaching the two coaches, the train was later flagged off. Police took into custody a young man who was hiding in a coach. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa expressed grief at the death of the woman. She said: “I have ordered police to investigate the crime along with the Railway Police and bring the culprits (to book).” She also announced a solatium of Rs.100,000 to the family of the dead woman, Rs.50,000 to those who suffered serious injuries and Rs.25,000 to the other injured people. Following the blasts, security at all major railway stations in Tamil Nadu were beefed up. According to Southern Railway General Manager Rakesh Mishra, an ex-gratia of Rs.100,000 has been announced to the family of the dead, Rs.25,000 for those who suffered serious injuries and Rs.5,000 for the other injured.

‘We are only demanding Young boy’s body recovered from well Public irate over “indifferent attitude” our genuine rights’ of police and fire department

Now, know where your ancestors lived NSSATA teachers 1,000 years ago New York, MaY 1 (IaNS) : Scientists have developed a tool that can trace back the place where your DNA was formed up to 1,000 years ago. The revolutionary Geographic Population Structure (GPS) tool works similarly to a satellite navigation system. “What we have discovered here at the University of Sheffield is a way to find not where you were born but where your DNA was formed up to 1,000 years ago,” said Eran Elhaik of University of Sheffield. Genetic admixture occurs when individuals from two or more previously separated populations begin interbreeding. “What is remarkable is that, we can do this so accurately that we can locate the village where your ancestors lived hundreds and hundreds of years ago - until now this has never been possible,” Elhaik added. To demonstrate how accurate GPS predictions are, the researchers analysed data from 10 villages in Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and an autonomous region in Italy, and over 20 islands in Oceania. The researchers were able to place a quarter of the residents in Sardinia directly to their home village and most of the remaining residents within 50 km of their village. The results for Oceania were no less impressive with almost 90 percent success of tracing islanders exactly to their island.

picket DEO offices in all districts Morung Express news Dimapur | May 1

The Nagaland Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Teachers’ Association (NSSATA) began its fourth phase agitation on Thursday by picketing offices of the District Education Officer in all the districts of the state. NSSATA is demanding release of pending salaries and arrears. SSA teachers in some districts, including Dimapur, have not received their salaries for the past five months. In Dimapur, the SSA teachers picketed the DEO office from 9 am onwards. The DEO, Dimapur and other staff were prevented by the agitating teachers from entering the aforementioned office. Members of the Against Corruption and Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) Nagaland also met with the agitating teachers to express solidarity with the “genuine” demands of the SSA teachers. Urging the teachers not to compromise on their genuine demands and rights, ACAUT members said that the indifferent attitude of the government to the plight of the teachers was not only a crime against the teachers but also amounted to depriving children of education. ACAUT members also stated that the suffering of the teachers was due to rampant corruption in the State Education Department. “Where is the money sanctioned for SSA teachers by the central government being diverted?” an ACAUT member asked and brand-

ed corrupt politicians and bureaucrats as “shameless” people. Assuring the SSA teachers that ACUAT Nagaland would extend support to any form of movement or agitation against corruption, the members however urged them to ensure that their agitation is democratic and non-violent. “We are not threatening the government. We are only demanding our genuine rights”, said an agitating teacher. An NSSATA member said that the picketing of all DEO offices will continue till May 9. “After that, if the government does not respond, we will be compelled to take more extreme measures”, he added. “The government officials are passing the bucks on the issue of fund for SSA teachers. We are confused as to who is the competent authority”, another teacher said. In Wokha, the NSSATA Wokha unit observed the picketing of SDEO office Wokha, with support and cooperation from the Kyong Students’ Union (KSU), Wokha Circle Students’ Union (WCSU), Kyong Youth Initiative (KYI), and parents of the SSA Teachers. A press note from the Wokha unit informed that absentees during the ongoing agitation shall be imposed a penalty of Rs 500 per day. For any grievances, members can approach the Action Committee, NSSATA Wokha unit, it stated. Altogether, 250 members attended the first day of agitation in Wokha. It may be mentioned the first phase agitation of the SSA teacher’s agitation was boycotting of classes from March 10-31. This was followed by sit-in protests in front of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly and a silent procession and submission of memorandum to the Nagaland Governor last month.

DIMaPUr, MaY 1 (MexN): In a tragic incident on May 3, a young boy’s body was recovered from a dry well in Chumukedima Ward 9. The deceased has been identified as Raj Limbu, a class 8 student, who hails from Assam and was living with a family member at Chumukedima. It could not be ascertained as to how the boy ended up in the well. No police report was filed and it was informed that his body was taken to Assam by family members on May 1 morning. Several rescue attempts had to be made to recover the boy’s body, in course of which two rescuers themselves fell unconscious and had to be saved by the public. Bohoto Achumi, Convener of Chumukedima Ward 9 public, informed that Lumpisa Sangtam, a class ten

student, volunteered to rescue Limbu. However, after entering the well, he fell unconscious and was stranded. Then, Basheer, a pharmacist went into the well with a rope tied to his waist but fell unconscious and had to be pulled by the public. Public contacted the Fire Brigade station at Chumukedima and the police. However, Achumi informed that the Fire Brigade personnel “did not turn up even after half an hour.” “It was only after Limbu’s guardian personally went to the Fire Brigade station that they came,” he added. It was informed that after two of the Fire Brigade per-

sonnel made unsuccessful attempts to rescue the boys, “they gave up.” He stated that the police turned up only after the rescue and recovery operation was completed. Khasita Sangtam, father of Lumpisa, went into the well with a rope tied around his waist and pulled up his son. Another rescuer, Imnawapang went down and retrieved the body of Raj Limbu. The public of Chumukedima Ward 9 have expressed displeasure at the inability of police and fire department personnel to act swiftly. Achumi stated that that the Fire Brigade personnel “did not bring any res-

cue equipment, even a rope, and some of them were in inebriated condition.” “The public expected that being trained personnel, they should take the lead in the rescue operation, not dumb spectators,” he added. “The casual and indifferent attitude of Fire Brigade personnel and police has left a big question mark on whether these personnel are capable of handling emergency situations despite all their trainings on disaster management and others,” stated a press note from the public of Chumukedima Ward 9. While lauding the acts of Khasita Sangtam and Imnayapang, it appealed for the state government to “enquire into the incident” and also to reward Khasita and Imnayapang for their “exemplary and brave acts.”

Achieving success despite all odds Morung Express news Dimapur | May 1

The story of Depok Sangma from Assembly of God Higher Secondary School, Dimapur is inspiring, to say the least. Depok scored 84.33% and secured the 6th rank in the HSSLC arts stream examinations 2014. He scored distinctions in English, Alternative English, History, Education, Economics, and Political Science. While many toppers and successful candidates are celebrating their success, The Morung Express caught this topper, in the midst of tutoring his neighbourhood children. Depok lives with his mother Nomita Sangma, a single parent, who works as a sweeper at Christina Memorial Higher Secondary School and Chowkidar at a Church in Dimapur. It was at Assembly of God Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, where he met providence in the form of Principal David Ngullie, who has been sponsoring Depok’s education for free. “Seeing my economically depraved background, he helped me out and I will always be grateful,” Depok said. Devoting two to three hours a day, Depok said that he did not take any coaching classes nor did he hold intensive preparation for the examination. “I did not even set

a timetable. But what I did was revise everyday at home what was being taught in the classroom.” Even during examinations, he continued his usual routine. His favourite subject is Economics and History and his plans to sit for competitive exams. He attributes God as the most important factor in his success. “I did not have any expectation; it’s a miracle of God. You

need to put trust in god and work hard. I also credit my success to my parents,” he adds. Unlike most boys his age, Depok has no interests in sports but prefers reading books, comics and magazines. He also enjoys watching television and hanging out with his friends. “I love music but I cannot play any instrument. Yet I dream of playing the piano,” he confesses. He plans to take up honours in Economics and wants to enrol at Patkai Christian College, Chumukedima. Depok’s mother is overjoyed at her son’s achievement. She laments that she was never able to help out in her children’s studies. “I was worried about how to educate them. Even though we don’t have anyone to help us financially, not even relatives, but God has looked over us.” Perplexed over the issue that her son possesses an aptitude for academic success but faced with financial difficulty, she stated, “I do not have a fixed dream for him for what will happen next is all God’s will.” Depok Sangma has crossed an important milestone in his life. Yet, today he stands unsure of his next step. All because he is economically deprived! Depok leaves us with a message “Every athlete cannot win the race. For me it’s not about winning the race but finishing it thoroughly.”

DimaPuR, may 1 (mExN): Eastern Theological College added another course in the academic programme by introducing Master of Arts in Peace Studies, a twoyear distance education programme and officially launched on April 30. Dr. Razouselie Lasetso, Dean of ILEMA, chaired the inaugural programme. Professor Razou stated that the prevailing situation in the region is smeared by violence, deep scorching poverty, illiteracy, backwardness, lack of modern development, people’s movements demanding and fighting for their rights, strong tribal affiliations. He said that this often promote tribalism and conflicts, gender violence, rampant corruption, violence against children, land boundary disputes, etc., have impacted and continue to affect every individual and community in the region adversely. “Living in such a context and experiencing the inability to coexist peacefully prompted the College to introduce the peace studies course with

an aim to equip church/ public leaders and theological graduates in dealing with the conflict situation of the region so that church ministry and theological education remain ever relevant,” said Razou. Rev. Zhabu Terhuja, President, ETC lighted the candle and offered a prayer to mark the launching of the programme. He challenged the gathering by saying, “the perilous time we are experiencing today is a sign that we are moving towards the end time and that peace is the most desired and coveted commodity both in individual as well as in family life, in the church and society, particularly in our beloved region.” He further said, “often our use of language is not understandable to our people and in our context... we pray but it is not often generated in reality... we preach but it is not often practiced with commitment...” He called on the gathering to ‘commit to be true’ so that our words, action and conscious participation in building peace in the region and beyond will

certainly bring glory and honour to our God. Principla of ETC, Rev. Dr. Akheto Sema, Principal told the first batch of the students that “the course should not be a matter of luxury but specialize in Peace Studies because they have a commitment to fulfill and that is to participate in building peace for the Glory of God.” In his concluding remark, Dean of ILEMA, Dr. Razou informed the gathering that the course is designed to be a quality professional programme with practical works to equip trainers to deliver a relevant and contextual ministry. The curriculum is indigenous in its content, nature and purpose, he said. He also said that the programme is targeted at church and public leaders who are engaged in ministry or peace concerns and yet unable to come for fulltime studies due to various reasons and yet have a burden to address peace concerns in the region and beyond. This was stated in an official communiqué of the College.

How would you term Rio’s shift to the centre?

I

would like to propose the question to the citizens of Nagaland as to how they would term the Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio’s Shift of his political Field of Play from the STATE to the NATIONAL. The question is a bit uneasy to most thinking Nagas; some seemed a little uneasy and others hesitant to answer because the question has a load and has also a Rider too. One veteran old Thinker said: “let me think and phone you a little later’. And a little later, he phoned me: “He (Rio) has mischievously bamboozled the people”. The Writer asked: “What do you mean by ‘Bamboo-zzle’?” and he said: “You look up in the Dictionary for the meaning”. I leafed through the big heavy ‘OXFORD DICTIONARY’ and it said: (cheat, hoax, mystify). Another said: “I would not call it ‘a cheat or hoax’; I would call it: ‘very undesirable’”. “Don’t say anything now, you just remain quiet and see what will happen after the Election Result: he may even resign if he does not get a Ministerial birth”, another said: The Writer -without malice to the Person- would say: “Rio has gone to the Centre in search of a Jersey Cow which will give more milk to him than the Desi Cow”. The time has come to Nagaland for us to talk very frankly, even vulgarly naked Truth sometimes, but with very little malice, so that Nagaland is purged of its Dross out of our inadequacies. Jersey Island is a 49 square mile Area, much nearer the French Coast in the English Channel, but the Island belongs to the UK. Soon after you land in the Airport; in stead of hearing modern noisy Vehicles and Cars, you become aware the Island is a cacophony of deeply mowing Cows here and there all over the places, one after the other. Jersey Island is famous for its high milk yielding Jersey Cows and the Municipal jealously guards the Breed of the Cows. Nobody is allowed to keep a Bull Cow without a 300 years history of high milk Yield Record, every Bull must have a Government Registration Number marked on the inside of one of its Ears! One night, over the Dinner, a Farmer told all about the Animal and said a Cow yielded a record 32. kg of Jersey Milk a day the English are very fond of. Most of the male Cows on birth, are donated to the Jersey Zoo of World Famous Gerald Durrell, born in an Assam Tea Garden and invited a head hunter Naga! Mr. Rio’s abandoning Shift of the Chief Minister Seat in Nagaland, is said to be a case of personal sacrifice for Nagaland; but the undesirables and the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages to the public: i. it would lessens the special category status of the State of Nagaland. From 1929 on, the Nagas have been stating a separate category of life from Mainstream life of India. Nagaland got a great measure what it wanted: -a special category

of constitutional provision of Freedom for the Traditional Customary Practices and the Right of the Ownership of the land and its resources for the Nagas of Nagaland from the overriding weight of Indian Parliament. The kith and kin people of the other Northeast States also now clamor for similar treatment from the Centre. If the Centre accedes; it may start a long domino effect to its burdens. On the other hand, if it would not listen to the voices of the other majority of the States; it would appear the Centre is not playing just. The Centre is on the horns of dilemma on the Issue and if the Centre observes even a slight change in Nagaland’s tight rope walk, that would compromise the State’s future. By giving too much company to the common Northeast lot, Nagaland’s special category would be compromised. Nagaland must maintain its own Politics. It would do well for Nagaland to maintain its friendly distance from other Northeast States to preserve the special, peculiar Constitutional provisions it has. Rio accepting the Convenership of the Federation of lip-service other Regional Parties of the Northeast, in liaison with the national Bharata Janata Party (BJP), is impure Milk. ii. The Shift would disturb one of the most precious modern Government’s democratic Principle of Secularism. People in the rest of India today see a completely different look and Christian in the Nagas, at Nagaland and the Northeast: The Ethos of the BJP is Hindu; its hand and its fingers are not graceful to the people of other Religions. The Party intends to make a Bridge head in the Christian Northeast and if Christian Nagaland agrees to be yoked with it; my view it that it would be not good for the Society, if not unchristian. Most Christian Theologians in Nagaland are well aware of Politics & Religion in the State and most keep themselves away from the Politics part of the combination. That is good but wise worldly silence often brings more harm to a Society than an honest voice against. iii. The sudden Shift would create a political Gulmal in Nagaland. If Messi and Ronaldo were to suddenly change their playing Field from Spain to England, there will be considerable disturbances in the whole European football Club rankings: Rios sudden change of political playing field from Nagaland to Delhi may unfortunately create a political tsunami in Nagaland. Already the rushing sound of a great Wind is heard; it is not known whether it will bring the Holy Spirit or political uncertainty to the State. If Rio failed to get a BJP Ministerial birth; it will be a loss to Nagaland a little and a great loss to Isac and Muivah! “You just keep quiet and wait and see”, advised an esteemed colleague. A press release from MSSU President Atokiho Sumi stated “Education is the cornerstone for progress of the society and it has been rightly accorded a fundamental right in the constitution of India, hence, the Government of Nagaland should confer top priority to the educational sector. On the contrary, it is lamentable to witness callous attitude of the government towards the plight of the teachers which is directly jeopardizing the career and welfare of students as well.” WSSU, “in the interest of justice,” urged upon the Government to “exhibit wisdom and release the payment of pending salary at the earliest before the case snowballs into unwanted consequence.”

NSCF extends support to NSSATA Kohima, may 1 (mExN): The Nagaland Senior Citizens Forum (NSCF) has called the SSA teachers demands as “absolutely genuine” and deserving “swift action” and in this regard, appealed to the concerned authorities to explore every possible means to redress the burning issue before it goes out of proportion in the interest of all. A press release from the forum’s President Dr. S. I. Toshi, and Secretary S. Ghunakha Swu, informed that NSCF had in an emergency meeting on April 30 among other things discussed the ongoing embroilment between NSSATA and School Education Department about the reported nonpayment of salaries w.e.f. December 2013 till date. “On close examination, it has been observed that apart from several appeals and memorandum their genuine demands were not given cognition,” NSCF stated.

“Having failed their polite approach, NSSATA had boycotted classes since March 10 demanding immediate release of their pending salaries from November 2013 to date,” NSCF informed and added that this was followed by a sit-in-dharna outside the gate of Nagaland Legislative Assembly on March 20 during the fourth session of the 12th Assembly. NSCF further informed that another silent sit-in-demonstration outside the Raj Bhavan, Kohima, took place on April 16 culminating in a 15 days ultimatum for release of the pending pays of 2730 SSA teachers. The ultimatum ended April 30. ore than five years have elapsed since the Right to Information Act (RTI) came into force across India including in Nagaland. But the impact of RTI on the people is yet to be felt simply for the reason that except for a very few cases, the Act itself has yet to be fully realized as a tool for empowerment. While the State Information Commission has done its part by traveling across the State to help spread the basic tenets of the RTI movement, yet for ensuring good governance, transparency and accountability at all levels of government functioning, there is still much that needs to be done to create awareness on this very important piece of legislation and educate the public about the different facets involved so that the Act would prove beneficial for the citizens. While most of the government workshops in partnership with the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative has been done mainly to prepare the administrative heads, heads of departments and other public authorities to enable them to meet their obligations under the newly enacted Act, similar workshop should also be conducted for the public. The concerned NGOs, academic forums or even the civil society groups should take the lead in this regard. When citizens are properly enlightened about the legislation only then will they realize the immense utility envisaged in the Act. Some of the success stories in States where there has been effective utilization of the Act are indeed heartening. It is no secret that it is rarely possible to get any work done in any government office without paying bribes or being made to run around. But now, one would have an option without the need of paying or doing a favor to somebody to get your legitimate work done in any government department. The simple act of demanding to know the status of your grievance petition, and the names of the officials who have been sitting on your file, does wonders. There have been stories about people getting new electricity connections, faulty meters replaced, wrong bills rectified. The Act has done wonders in other States. Right to Information is also redefining the relationships between the people and the governments. Till now, the people had to run around the government officials to get any work sanctioned or to get any work done in their area. Not anymore. Right to Information provides such critical information and evidence in the hands of the common man that equipped with this evidence, a person is able to take on the most entrenched vested interests. Information is indispensable for the functioning of a true democracy. Open Government is the new democratic culture of an open society towards which other States are moving and Nagaland should be no exception. But for all of this to happen, requires a vigilant public ready to actively participate in the democratic process. The RTI Act is a lever to help in this democratic participation and the immense potential available through the provision of the RTI can be harnessed for public welfare. More importantly, since the chief objective of the Act is to bring about transparency and accountability in the administration by transforming the people themselves as watchdogs of the administration, the Act if properly utilized by the common man, will make our administration more effective and at the same time responsive. The Tyranny of the Mirror

I

t is very difficult to see your own reflection in a puddle. I tried it in the park the other day: what you get is a silhouette of yourself against the sky. Even if there was enough light falling on your face to fill in the details, you’d still get the view from underneath, looking up the nostrils; not a good angle, especially as the years march on. To see yourself full-face, albeit with the equally unflattering tug of gravity, you’d have to lean quite far over the puddle and tilt your head forward, at which point you run the risk of overbalancing. Perhaps Narcissus couldn’t swim, and that is how he met his end? For millennia, such an imperfect, low-angle, highrisk glimpse was all that was available to Homo sapiens. Can you imagine not knowing what you look like? Today we are not only surrounded by mirrors, everywhere from the bathroom to the gym to the lift, but also by incidentally reflective surfaces. Car windows, computer screens, the oven door, vast cityscapes of plate-glass. It’s hard to avoid your own reflection, even if you want to. That we have been looking at ourselves for some time is, er, reflected in our language. To say that someone is self-regarding is not a compliment. If you are asked how you see yourself, you don’t reply “I look in a mirror,” because you know it is an abstract question. That’s how fused the literal and metaphorical aspects of seeing have become. But it is worth detaching them a bit if we want to remain sane in a culture that exhorts us to change what we see in the mirror—by buying this object, or having that procedure—in order to feel better. Consumer culture is based on the sophistry that looks and feelings are congruent, but despite the linguistic blurring, what we see and what we feel are discrete. I can’t prove it, but I have a hunch that eating disorders were not such a problem before mirrors came along. And I doubt that the Fast Diet was big news, either. The earliest mirrors, found in Anatolia, date from 6,000BC and were made of polished stone. From about 2,000BC there were mirrors of polished copper in ancient Egypt and of bronze in China. All these surfaces would have shown a much dimmer reflection than we are used to today: although the Romans knew how to coat blown glass with molten lead, for centuries the privileged few who owned mirrors only saw themselves through a glass darkly. It was not until the early Renaissance that mirrors made with a tin-mercury amalgam became more common in Europe—and thank goodness, because without them we wouldn’t have Dürer’s self-portraits. Even then, they remained one of the most expensive things a person could own, and the church disapproved because they led to the dangerous path of self-worship. It had a point. In 1835, a German chemist invented the silvered-glass mirror that ushered in the world as we know it, with mirrors, mirrors everywhere. They have great benefits—solar power, precision telescopes, spinach-free teeth—but what is it doing to us, meeting our own reflection at every turn? I can’t help feeling that humans weren’t designed to know what we look like, and that we haven’t adjusted very well to doing so. Before the looking glass, we could only see part of our bodies and nothing of our faces, and we looked out at the world from within them: it was an inside-out process. Now it is partly reversed: our interior selves are bombarded with information about our exteriors—along with suggested improvements. The self-consciousness that was the curse of Adam and Eve was surely only heightened by the arrival of the mirror, which has made us subject and object at the same time. A few months ago, I saw this advice from the fashion designer Erdem in a newspaper: always look in a full-length mirror before you leave the house. Soon afterwards I was chatting to Anna, the owner of a fashion boutique I know, and she said the opposite: “Once you’ve got dressed, don’t look in the mirror again. That last glance can be fatal.” I’m with Anna: it allows the sliver of self-doubt to slip in. Now that even our phones can show us ourselves, and the word “selfie” has entered the dictionary, the time is ripe for a backlash against the tyranny of the mirror. I’m going to start by not looking in one before leaving the house, by not preparing, J. Alfred Prufrock style, “a face to meet the faces that you meet”. Let’s all step into the street unseen by ourselves. If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, surely life will be easier when the beholder is not you?

Labor resistance explodes in China

A

s if in anticipation of May Day, one of the largest episodes of labor resistance in decades unfurled in Southern China like a great red carpet of contention throughout the month of April. Beginning on April 5 and seething intermittently for several weeks, tens of thousands of workers demonstrated at the Yue Yuen factory in Dongguan. The Yue Yuen incident should be seen from the perspective of China’s nascent labor movement, as an episode in a steady trajectory of resistance. Yue Yuen is the largest sports shoe manufacturer in the world, supplying Adidas, Nike, Puma, Crocs, Timberland, and many other brands. The demonstration against the factory came to its first crescendo on April 14 as hundreds of police attacked the workers. The strikers were undaunted and by the following week the number of workers on strike had risen to around 40,000. Students in nearby Guangzhou glued posters outside of Nike stores in solidarity with the striking workers. Meanwhile, according to China Digital Times, government censors issued directives that domestic media delete all content related to the incident. The workers had taken to the streets in protest of the company’s ongoing failure to pay its 70,000 employees their full social security and housing allowance. Worker grievances also included the thousands of fraudulent contracts they had been forced to sign, which prevented their children from enrolling in free local education, forcing them to pay for specialty migrant worker children schools. These are common grievances among China’s some 250 million migrant workers, who are building lives in the cities rather than returning to the countryside with their wages. A 2010 survey conducted by China’s National Bureau of Statistics noted 61.6 percent of all migrant workers were born after 1980. This new generation of migrant workers differ from their parents in fundamental ways. A theme explored in Lixin Fan’s 2009 documentary “Last Train Home,” is the shifting of identity away from the village to the city. Many new generation migrant workers grew up in or were born in cities. This urban identity is associated with more education and skills than their parents, a more independent attitude, and a greater fluency in the Internet and social media. Such differences have arguably influenced the evolution of labor resistance. Yue Yuen workers were supported by independent labor rights organizations, such as Shenzhen Chunfeng Labor Dispute Service Center. Labor activists from this organization, Zhang Zhiru and Lin Dong, helped coordinate the action through various social media platforms, and urged the workers to remain nonviolent. In response, the police detained Zhang and Lin on 22 April 22. At the time of writing, Lin Dong was still being held in criminal detention. Union representatives, on the other hand, were conspicuously absent during the strike. “I personally have not seen any union staff, although I heard that they have issued a comment, which no one gives a damn about,” a striking worker told China Labour Bulletin, a Hong Kong rights organization. “They are now giving us instructions, but where the hell were they when the company violated our rights?! I have worked at Yue Yuen for almost two decades, and I don’t even know who our union president is.” Where is the union? The largest trade union in the world, the All China Federation of Trade Unions has 239 million members according to 2010 figures. However, the reputation of the ACFTU as the protector of workers’ rights in China has long been suspect due to subordination to elite interests within the ruling Communist Party of China.

ikolai stood near the local council building in Konstantinovka, leaning on his walking stick and shaking his head at the scene in front of him. Masked gunmen in camouflage had seized the building and were guarding the entrance. Meanwhile, Pro-Russia activists were building barricades with concrete blocks and sandbags and singing along to pop song about the Soviet Union. Back in the USSR, Nikolai had worked for Soviet military intelligence. He's convinced that the men with guns here are from Russia. "I went up to them," Nikolai told me. "They had modern Russian automatic rifles. I told them: I don't believe you are Ukrainians. You're from Russia. From GRU Military Intelligence. You can't cheat me. I'm from the same system." "One of them replied: 'Ah, there's no tricking an old wolf, is there?' I'm sure they've been sent here and paid to make revolts and calamities." I asked one of the armed "men in green" where he came from. "Ukraine," he replied curtly. Then he smiled: "Actually, there's no such nationality as Ukrainian. That's an Austria-Hungarian deception. We're Russian. We're all Russian. And this land isn't Ukraine: it's Novorossiya - and we will defend it." Thirty kilometres (19 miles) away in Kramatorsk, pro-Russia militants have occupied the administration building there, too. Inside I met Vadim Ilovaisky. He introduced himself as the

When it ratified the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights on March 27, 2001, China made a reservation to Article 8.1(a), which guarantees the right to form and freely join trade unions, stating that its application must be consistent with relevant domestic laws, the typical rhetoric of exemption. Although the Chinese Labor Law encourages collective bargaining on paper it is clear from precedent that the collective bargaining process has most often been shallow and disproportionately favors enterprise, while the freedom of association that is purportedly guaranteed in the Chinese Constitution is often infringed. China has, furthermore, continually failed to ratify fundamental International Labor Organization conventions, including CO87, the Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organize, and CO98, the Right to Organize and Collective Bargaining. With a regulation stating that union chairs must be approved by Communist Party officials, it is not uncommon that union representatives are appointed from among factory management or that union officials beat workers back from strikes with truncheons. It is little wonder that the rise in labor resistance is more attributed to horizontal organization within and between factories and supported by independent labor rights organizations rather than through union coordination. Two episodes that are often accepted as benchmarks in labor resistance, due to the nature of their grievances, sophistication of organization, and relative successes are the 2002 demonstrations by unremunerated workers against the Ferro-Alloy factory bankruptcy and the 2010 strikes at a series of Honda factories over unlivable wages and worker representation. Resistance at Honda For weeks in May and June of 2010 workers from several Honda auto parts factories in southern China orchestrated a series of nonviolent demonstrations beginning in Foshan. Most labor disputes in China arise over unpaid or underpaid wages, but the Honda demonstrators demanded large wage increases and a graduated wage scale. According to interviews at the time, as the strike continued, workers “developed higher consciousness of the importance of setting up a democratic union organization in their factory” and included in their demands the right to freely elect representatives. On the afternoon of May 31, rather than responding to these demands, the local trade union dispatched around 200 officials. Identifiable by matching yellow hats, they attacked a small crowd of gathered workers. Many were beaten. The confrontations escalated but the demonstrators remained firm. They demanded a response from the union and the company and eventually succeeded in gaining limited rights in electing their own representatives and earned a 35 percent wage increase; student interns received an even higher percent wage increase. The successes of the first strike spread to several other Honda factories in June. Two of the early organizers in the Foshan demonstrations, in their early 20s, had already quit but decided to organize for the benefit of their fellow employees while they waited to be transferred. In Foshan, several workers wrote updates on personal blogs and many of the demonstrators and supporters were active on QQ, a popular Chinese social media platform. At follow up actions, Honda workers uploaded cell phone videos online. The success of Honda workers has been hailed by labor rights organizations as something of a turning point. Their demands demonstrated increasing awareness of the need for worker representation and that migrant workers are increasingly eager to negotiate their own

terms and build sustainable lives in cities. Ferro Alloy In early March 2002, after three years of simmering tensions, thousands of employees of the Liaoyang Ferro-Alloy factory in the northeastern province of Liaoning marched on the city government building. They were joined en route by thousands of workers from other factories. Later, the arrest of several Ferro-Alloy worker representatives sparked greater coordination and swelled the numbers to more than 30,000 demonstrators by March 18. Among their main grievances were unpaid housing allotments, pension contributions, social security payments and owed wages. Workers demanded investigation into the misappropriation of funds that they claimed had lead to the company’s bankruptcy and refusal to pay workers. While also creating petitions and making legal demands, the Ferro-Alloy protests, as noted by UCLA sociologist Ching Kwan Lee in her 2007 book Labor Protests in China’s Rustbelt and Sunbelt, “involved inter-factory coordination and political demands for the removal of city officials.” These tactics set it apart from previous labor protests. Like the Yue Yuen strike, ACFTU representatives were conspicuously absent from the demonstrations in Liaoning and later sided with the state’s hardline stance against workers. By the middle of March, the government — no longer willing to negotiate — launched a series of counter-strikes. At first attempting to subvert the movement from within through agents provocateur and political spin in domestic media. The state eventually responded with mass arrests. While several of the main organizers, such as Yao Fuxin, were arrested, so were those targeted by worker claims. Yao Fuxin was sentenced to seven years for illegal assembly and subversion, while the former director of the Ferro-Alloy factory was sentenced to 13 years on smuggling charges. Other company and party officials were also sentenced. The central government instituted new provisions that made it more difficult for enterprises to declare bankruptcy without guaranteeing provisions for workers, as the Ferro-Alloy factory had attempted. Labor looking forward While such episodes demonstrate that coordination is possible, it is arguable whether China has a labor movement. The sustainability and national coordination of individual episodes of labor resistance is underdeveloped and the Communist Party works tirelessly to constrain national mobilization. The bulk of labor resistance is still often spontaneous, but younger workers are injecting innovative ideas with the guidance of increasingly professional labor activists inside China and abroad. The nascent movement has made strides. As collective identity among workers has increased, so has organizing capabilities; with new support, workers are becoming more proactive and successful. The international community can continue to support labor resistance in China by expressing solidarity for all nonviolent labor resistance and making consumer or political decisions at home. When the Yue Yuen strike started, Adidas moved a bulk of its orders to other suppliers. In response, solidarity actions were staged at Adidas stores from Hong Kong to Istanbul and New York. Monitoring the situation of labor rights defenders and standing resolute on arbitrary detention, communicating with international organizations and local political representatives have contributed to the international struggle for labor rights and will continue to benefit Chinese workers. Meeting the little green men steven rosenberg BBC town's new 'Military Commandant'. He was sitting in army fatigues in the office of the deputy mayor, poring over maps of the region (the deputy mayor, he informed me, was on sick leave). The Military Commandant pointed out the aquarium in the corner and assured me that he was taking good care of the deputy mayor's fish. I asked Vadim where he was from. 'I'm a Cossack," he told me, "my grandfather and greatgrandfather were from Stavropol region (in southern Russia)." "In civilian life, I'm a PR consultant. But as a Cossack commander I took part in the Crimea campaign. I'm a citizen of Ukraine." When asked where he lives now, he was evasive: "My home," he replied, "is the building I'm sitting in." Like the veteran military intelligence officer I met in Konstantinovka, the West, too, is convinced that there is a direct link between Moscow and the pro-Russia militia that has been seizing government buildings and police

stations with impunity across Eastern Ukraine. According to The Daily Beast, in a recent closed door meeting, the US Secretary of State John Kerry revealed that the US had obtained "taped conversations of intelligence operatives (in Ukraine) taking their orders from Moscow". Washington had already accused Russia of continuing "to fund, co-ordinate and fuel a heavily armed separatist movement" in Ukraine. The Ukrainian government alleges that the commander of pro-Russia militants in eastern Ukraine - Igor Strelkov - is a Russian military officer. Kiev claims that his real name is Igor Girkin and that he is from Moscow. This week he was among the 15 individuals sanctioned by the European Union. The EU identified him as "staff of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (GRU)". In an interview with the Russian tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda last week-

end, Commander "Strelkov" claimed that "more than half, or maybe twothirds" of his force were Ukrainians. "Many of them," he said, "had battle experience, many had fought in the Russian army…" Russia denies having troops or operatives on the ground in Ukraine. Moscow maintains that the militias and "self-defence forces" which have sprung up in eastern Ukraine are spontaneous demonstrations of people power sparked by fear of "fascists" in power in Kiev. But if Russia is orchestrating this revolt, what does that tell us about Moscow's influence in eastern Ukraine and the level of control Kiev has? Judging by the ease with which pro-Russia groups have been seizing key buildings, in many cases simply walking in and taking over, the power of central government has been evaporating here. Even Ukraine's acting President Olexander Turchynov has admitted that in Donetsk and Luhansk regions security personnel "tasked with the protection of citizens" were "helpless." Even worse, "some units," he claimed, "either aid or co-operate with terrorist groups". If President Putin's plan is to weaken, or even split Ukraine, he may not need to send in Russian tanks. Amid the chaos, the violence and the fear in eastern Ukraine, deep divisions have already emerged. And, for now, Kiev appears incapable of holding the country together.

Application and use: Biofertilizer can be applied in different ways:  Seed treatment  Seedling dipping  Soil application Depending on the biofertilizer, and the crop grown, different methods of application are adopted. In general, the performance of biofertilizers is more when used along with organic manures like compost. In rainfed farming, since moisture is limiting, best performance from biofertilizers can be realized when moisture conservation practices are adopted along with application of biofertilizers. The treatment of seeds with the slurry of inoculant is the most effective method of application. For this prepare the slurry of required quantity of inoculant in sufficient water (generally 400-500 ml of water for 200 g inoculant) as given below: • Boil 50 g gur in one litre of water and cool it • Pour this slurry over the heap of seeds to be treated • Mix the seeds thoroughly with hands • Spread the treated seeds over clean floor or on plastic sheet or on gunny bag and dry under shade. • Sow the treated seeds as early as possible 10 kg of normal size seeds such as moong, urd, arhar, cowpea, lentil and berseem may be treated with 200 g of Rhizobium inoculant by slurry method. Large size seeds such as groundnut, chickpea, soybean and pea, etc., require 400 to 500 g of inoculant for 10 to 12 kg of seeds. • Root dipping is mainly used for application of Azospirillum/ PSM on paddy transplating/ vegetable crops. The required quantity of Azospirillum/ PSM has to be mixed with 5-10 litres of water at one corner of the field and the roots of seedlings has to be dipped for a minimum of half-an-hour before transplantation. • For soil application 200ml of PSM per acre is used. Mix PSM with 400 to 600 kgs of cow dung FYM along with ½ bag of rock phosphate if available. The mixture of PSM, cow dung and rock phosphate have to be kept under any tree or under shade for overnight and maintain 50% moisture. Use the mixture as soil application in rows or during leveling of soil. An alternative strategy to ensure yield and protection of crop is the need of the hour looking into the health and environmental consequences of increasing amounts of fertilizers. The possible alternative to chemical fertilizers can be use of efficient microbial inoculants for biofertilizer in agriculture which is environmentally safe and sound. This approach can give the sustainable agriculture as it does not deteriorate the soil. Based on living micro-organisms these inputs can make nutrients abundantly available in atmosphere and soil accessible for plant use without the adverse impact that chemical fertilizers have on soil, water and air. rs. Mhowlumi Murry is educated housewife from New Wokha village, Wokha district, Nagaland. She is being engaged in fisheries (150 x 100 m) and owned potential unutilized farm area of 2.5 ha. KVK Wokha imparted training on integrated farming system and shown different models established in farmers’ field to develop her unutilized land. She developed a livestock cum fish integrated farming system by utilizing existing resources with the intervention and technical guidance from KVK Wokha. She procured six piglets (4 female and 2 male, Large Black Cross), 200 Vanaraja birds from ICAR Research Complex, Nagaland Centre and 10,000 fish fingerlings from fishery department, Wokha. Pig and poultry sheds were constructed near fish pond with locally available bamboo and C.G.I roofing materials. The average body weight of pig was recorded as 65 to 70 kg at 10 months of age. All four sows conceived within 12 months and produced an average of seven piglets. She sold 24 piglets at Rs. 2500 each after two months and earned Rs. 60,000. The Vanaraja birds were reared up to six months and the overall survivability was 85 per cent. The aver-

age live weight of Vanaraja birds was 3.0 kg at 24th week. She sold a total of 510 kg live weight at Rs. 250 per kg and generated Rs. 1, 27,500. In fish pond, she allowed villagers to catch the fish for two months (July to August) at Rs. 100 per day per person and earned Rs. 30,000. From her integrated livestock–fish unit, the gross annual income was Rs. 217,500 and the annual expenditure was Rs. 138,000 including cost of chicks, piglets and fish fingerlings, feed, medicines, depreciation cost of sheds etc. Family labour was utilized for daily farm operation. Thereby, she earned a net profit of Rs. 79,500 from her farming system in a year. After gaining experience from her own farm and technical guidance from KVK, she now extended her farm and is maintaining 200 to 400 Vanaraja birds round the year, a pig breeding unit, and two fish ponds. Her success reflects the positive impact of integrated farming system for maximum utilization of the resources to generate sustainable income and employment. Dr. H. Moaakum KVK Wokha

Techniques for production of quality tomato seeds

T

omato is one of the most important vegetable crops supporting the livelihood and improving the economic life of many vegetable growers in the North Eastern Hill Region. Tomatoes are used for soup, salad, pickles, ketchup, puree, sauces, and in many other ways. It is a warm season crop and grows well at 210C to 230C but can be commercially grown at 18 0C to 27 0C. The best soil for tomato is well drained loam to sandy loam and rich in organic matter. Seed are sown in high hills from February to June (spring - summer), while in mid and low hills two crops can be raised, one from February to June and another from September to December. About 400g to 500g of seed raised at 250 m2 is sufficient for transplanting one hectare. When seedlings attain 10 to 15 cm height (3-4 weeks old seedlings) are planted at the spacing of 60 x 45 cm for open pollinated varieties/ local cultivars. Besides all cultural practices, the following points are essential to produce good quality tomato seed. Isolation: Tomato is mainly a self-pollinated crop but a certain percentage of cross-pollination has also been recorded. The percentage of out-crossing may depend on the variety and environment. It is, therefore, safe to keep 50-100 metres of isolation distance between two varieties for production of seed. Field inspection and roguing: Follow strictly field inspection and roguing for off-types and diseased plants at least three times. The details are as follows. (i). Before flowering: Check for offtype foliage, general plant type including determinate and indeterminate habit, vigour etc. check for diseased plants. (ii). Flowering and immature fruiting stage: Check fruit size, shape and unripe color; check disease plants. (iii). Mature fruit stage: Check fruit size, shape, color and internal features; check disease plants. Harvesting: Harvest fully ripe tomatoes and sort out all green, rotten, injured and defective fruits. Extract the seed following any one method given as below as per convenience. (i) Fermentation method: The ripe

fruits are crushed well in non-metallic container by hand or by any mechanical method to make slurry. Fruit juice should not be allowed to drain out. The entire material is kept as such till it ferment. When fermentation is completed it shows profuse froth formation on the upper surface of material and tomato flesh separated from seeds completely. The liquid is decanted off and seeds are washed at least 8-10 times with clean water. Seeds are spread thinly in the sun for drying. (ii) Alkali treatment method: The extracted material with pulp is treated with an alkali mixture (300g of ordinary washing soda is added to 4 litres of boiling water) in equal volume. When the alkali mixture is cooled, allow it all to stand overnight in an earthen pot. Next day all the seeds will settle down at the bottom of the container. The liquid is decanted off. Seeds are washed thoroughly with clean water and allowed to dry in the sun. (iii) Acid treatment method: In the extracted tomato pulp commercial hydrochloric @ 5-6ml per kg pulp is thoroughly mixed and stirred left for about 30 minutes. The pulp is then again stirred and washed thoroughly with clean water, and seeds are allowed to dry in the sun. Drying and storing: On small scale seed production, the drying of seeds can be done in the sun whereas on large scale it is done in dryer. Drying of seeds upto 10-12% moisture can be easily done in the sun while in the dryer; it may be done upto 7 or 8 % moisture content. Storing of seeds is done with 8-10% moisture in moisture – vapour proof container. Before filing the seeds in to container, they are treated with Captan or Thiram 75 WDP at 2g per kg seed. Such seeds will remain viable upto 70-80% at the end of about 25-30 months of storage. Yield: For obtaining 1kg of tomato seeds, about 150-220 kg of fruits is required. The seed yield in tomato varies due to the number and quantity of seeds present in fruit (varietal character), planting season, management practices etc. Jitendra Kumar Patel Research Associate ICAR Nagaland Centre

Advisories

1

Citrus

Before monsoon, clean the basin, apply recommended dosage of fertilizers and manures, use Pseudomonas and Trichoderma formulations to check root rot and paint the trunk up to 2ft height from soil level with Bordeaux paste.

2

Mushroom

Excess moisture in the bed straw leads to weed mushroom (usually ink cap) growth and hampers mycelia run. Maintain hygiene in and around mushroom unit to prevent pest and disease build up.

3

Potato

Proper monitoring should be done on regular basis for late blight in potato. Cool rainy weather, high relative humidity (near 100%), and heavy dew formation favor infection, disease progress, and spore production. Proper modifications should be done to eliminate standing water.

4

Colocasia

Daily monitor the field against leaf blight which appears as small, water-soaked spots that increase in circumference also spread to healthy plants. Practice crop sanitation and use prophylactic sprays to check the disease spread

5

Vegetables Make beds across the slope instead of along the slope to save water and check soil erosion. Use proper cultural practices to promote and maintain healthy plants, which do not get diseases as readily as weak plants.

Livestock  Birds should be provided plenty of water with 1% salt, mineral mixture. Change in weather could lead to viral diseases. It is thus advice to clean the sanitary condition of poultry. Provide balanced feed, fresh & clean water  Complete the work of digging or re- digging of pond by next one or two weeks before the monsoon arrive.  Piglets are susceptible for swine fever due to change in weather and feed. Taking advice of Vety practitioner before providing of medicine is compulsory for confirmation and dosages.  Due to heat wave cattle may be under environmental stress followed by dehydration, heat stroke. Blasts reflect desperation, cowardice: PM

neW Delhi, May 1 (Pti): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday condemned the Chennai blasts, saying such “barbaric acts” highlight the “desperation and cowardice” of those responsible and asserted that no efforts would be spared in bringing the perpetrators to justice. Offering condolence to the kin of the deceased and sympathy for those injured, he appealed for peace and expressed confidence that the people of the country will stand united against these attempts to disturb peace and harmony. Dr. Singh said, “Such barbaric acts targeting innocent men, women and children only highlight the desperation and cowardice of those responsible,” according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office. “The Prime Minister has offered his sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and heartfelt sympathies to those injured”, it said. He said, “No efforts should be spared to bring the perpetrators to justice. The Centre, he said, will provide the State government all assistance towards this. Two minor-intensity

neW Delhi, May 1 (Pti): In the wake of Chennai blasts, BJP on Thursday said there is threat to leaders as well as to the environment for holding free and fair elections and asked the government not to show any laxity on the security front. Conveying condolences to the kin of the deceased and sympathies to those injured, the main opposition party said there were enough indications that forces inimical to India and the forces which are trying to create disharmony in the country have remained active through the election process. “BJP expresses its note of caution at the moment when such a grave attack has happened. The threat

which we spoke about at the beginning of election persists, not just for BJP leadership and BJP rallies, but for the conduct of free and fair polling,” BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman told reporters. “We want harmonious environment in which the elections should be taking place, whereas forces inimical to India are even now attempting to disturb peace with which elections should take place,” she said, adding “I think the Government of India should be cautious and absolutely careful not to relax even for a minute. The threat continues.” She said the threat to disturb the environment, wherein free and fair poll should be held, is very

much there and government should not show any laxity on the security front. Sitharaman said such incidents discourage voters to go to polling booths who go to polling stations with peace on their minds, is being constantly threatened. “Enough care should be taken to maintain peace and harmony and prevention of such attacks should be in the minds of the government,” she said. “Not only are we concerned about the safety and security of the BJP rallies, Narendra Modi’s rallies, the threat perception is something which we were worried about and we did highlight it to (Home Minister) Sushikumar Shinde,” she said.

the intelligence wing of the force has been asked to keep a check on suspect passengers and people moving around the area. The CISF is the mandated security force that secures 59 civil airports in the country. Officials said the vigil has been heightened to thwart any dis-

ruptive activity at these facilities which see lakhs of people travelling everyday to destinations in India and abroad. The security agency has also asked its troops to undertake the ‘secondary point ladder checking’ in case of a suspicious activity or passenger. This frisking is done after a pas-

senger crosses the initial security checking and is just about to board the aircraft. Two minor-intensity bombs rocked the Guwahati-Bangalore Express at the Chennai Central Railway station early this morning claiming a woman’s life and leaving 13 others injured.

US rules out mediation on Kashmir ‘Press freedom in India declines with elections’

Washington, May 1 (Pti): The US has ruled out any mediation on the Kashmir issue as long as India rejects such a proposal and asked Pakistan to avoid employing militancy as an instrument of state policy. “As long as India rejects any actual medication there’s not much we can do in that regard specifically,” Special US Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan James Dobbins told state-run Pakistani Television. “India has consistently rejected any third party mediation and argued that this is an issue that needs to be negotiated directly and without the participation of any third party. So they’ve rejected mediation,” said Dobbins. “I think as long as they reject mediation, there is only a limited amount that the US or any other party can do. We certainly

in our dialogue with Pakistan and India encourage improved relations, encourage improved trade relations, encourage improved dialogue on strategy and military issues, and we certainly encourage dialogue and negotiation on the territorial issues that separate the two countries,” he said. Echoing India’s concerns over cross-border terrorism, he said India is concerned about cross-border militancy and terrorist attacks that have been conducted in India which they believe had their origin on Pakistani territory. “I think as is the case with Afghanistan, this is something that’s in everybody’s interest. I think all of the states of the region need to avoid employing militancy as an instrument of policy,” he said. “That this has been a longterm strategy which has cre-

ated a cancer in societies and particularly in Pakistani society which is now threatening of the actual existence of the state and of its democratic institutions,” he said. “So it’s in the interest not just of Pakistan, but of Pakistan and all of its neighbors to move away from that approach to diplomacy and to geopolitical strategy, and to avoid employing these kinds of instruments and, as I’ve said, move toward the elimination of violent extremism in Pakistan and around Pakistan and all of the neighboring societies,” Dobbins said. Referring to the on-going Lok Sabha elections, Dobbins said India will have a new government soon. “It will be a new opportunity. Pakistan now has a government that still has a long life in it with a clear political mandate,” he said.

Washington, May 1 (ians): India’s score in press freedom declined by a point, to 39, to reflect increased interference in content by media owners in the run-up to the 2014 elections, according to a Freedom House report released Thursday. Such interference “led to the dismissal of key editorial staff in several instances”, says the report which rates India “Partly Free” on a scale from 0 (best) to 100 (worst) divided into three subcategories - “Free”, “Partly Free”, or “Not Free”. Global press freedom has fallen to its lowest level in over a decade, says the annual ‘Freedom of the Press 2014: A Global Survey of Media Independence’, the report published by the non-profit organisation since 1980. The report found that despite positive developments

in a number of countries, the share of the world’s population with media rated “Free” remains at just 14 percent, or only one in seven people. Far larger shares live in “Not Free” (44 percent) or “Partly Free” (42 percent) media environments. “We see declines in media freedom on a global level, driven by governments’ efforts to control the message and punish the messenger,” said Karin Karlekar, project director of the report. “In every region of the world last year, we found both governments and private actors attacking reporters, blocking their physical access to newsworthy events, censoring content, and ordering politically motivated firings of journalists.” Of the 197 countries and territories assessed during 2013, a total of 63 (32 percent)

Heat wave scorches north India neW Delhi, May 1 (Pti): Intense heat wave conditions swept across northern region as temperature in most areas soared past 40 degree Celsius with mercury in Rajasthan’s Ganganagar city settling at a high of 45.9 degree Celsius. In Delhi, people woke up to another scorching day with the temperature was recorded at 24.2 degree Celsius and the maximum settled at 42.8 degree Celsius higher than yesterday’s 42.1 degree Celsius. Severe heat wave swept through parts of Haryana and Punjab including Chandigarh with Hisar in Haryana sizzled at 45 degree Celsius. Bhiwani recorded 43.4 deg C, up by three notches than normal, while mercury set-

tled at 43 deg C in Karnal. Residents of Chandigarh also braved yet another hot day at 41.5 deg C, up four notches. While in Punjab, Patiala sizzled at 42.6 deg C, up five degrees. MeT department has forecast dust storms and thunderstorms with possibility of light rain at isolated places in the two states during the next two days. In Rajasthan, Ganganagar recorded the maximum temperature of 45.9 degree C and barring Udaipur, maximum temperature in all cities was above 41 degree C, which above three to five degree C more than the average, a met offical said. Churu recorded a maximum

temperature of 45.7, followed by Bikaner 43.6, Kota 43.5, Barmer 43.2, Ajmer, Pilani, Jaisalmer around 42.5 degree C each. In Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow recorded temperature at 43.3 degree Celsius while Allahabad settled at 45.1 deg C, mercury in Varanasi touched 44.2 degree C. Chidambaram, Sinha in war of words over economic data

neW Delhi, May 1 (ians): War of words escalated Thursday between Finance Minister P. Chidambaram and former finance minister and BJP leader Yashwant Sinha over economic data. While Sinha accused Chidambaram of spreading lies and fooling the country over fiscal deficit data, the finance minister called him “mischievious” and ignorant. Addressing a press conference at Congress party national headquarters here, Chidambaram released some data and claimed that economic performance during the Congress party-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government was far better than the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government, during which Sinha was a finance minister. “I thought Shri Sinha would be happy to remain a distant memory for the people of India. However, since he seems determined to remain relevant in his party, I am obliged to recall his record during the four years when he was finance minister,” Chidambaram said. “I may point out that 2000-2001 and 2002-2003 were the worst years since liberalisation in terms of growth and Prime Minister Vajpayee was forced to replace the finance minister,” he added.

In an interview to a newspaper published Thursday, Sinha said Chidambaram is “trying to fool the country by saying the fiscal deficit has come down to 4.6 percent. It is a fraud.” “He (Chidambaram) savagely cut planned expense, milched the PSUs and postponed the subsidy expenses for the next year. In response to the global crisis, he created a domestic crisis. He only gave Crocin to the ailing economy to bring down the temperature. He didn’t treat the disease. The new government must bring out a white paper on the economy to expose Chidambaram’s lies,” Sinha said. Reacting sharply to the allegations, Chidambaram said it was either born out of ignorance or is mischievious. Chidambaram pointed out that subsidy bill of each year is paid at the end of every quarter and, therefore, the bill for the fourth quarter is paid in the first quarter of next year, and the same practice was followed in 2013-14 also. “This has been the practice for many years and nothing unusual has happened in 2013-14,” he said. Chidambaram also blamed Sinha and his party BJP for stalling key reforms, including Goods and Services Tax (GST), Direct Tax Code (DTC) and insurance bill.

recording a maximum of 45.6 degrees Celsius Wednesday. Churu and Bikaner sizzled at 45.3 and 44.5 degrees Celsius, respectively, while Barmer, Kota, Bikaner and Jaipur recorded maximum of 44.8, 44.6, 44.5 and 43.9 degrees Celsius, respectively, according to the Met department. For the past three days, the maximum temperature has remained above 40 degrees Celsius in Jaipur. The maximum temperature recorded Wednesday was 43.9 degrees, highest for this summer season so far. Concerned over the scorching heat, the parents’ welfare society had asked the district administration to change timings.

were rated Free, 68 (35 percent) were rated Partly Free, and 66 (33 percent) were rated Not Free. This balance marks a shift toward the Not Free category compared with the edition covering 2012, which featured 63 Free, 70 Partly Free, and 64 Not Free countries and territories. The population figures are significantly affected by two countries -- China, with a Not Free status, and India, with a Partly Free status -- that together account for over a third of the world’s more than seven billion people. In Asia Pacific, only 5 percent of the region’s population had access to Free media in 2013, the report said. China, rated Not Free, continued to crack down on online speech, particularly on microblogs, and also ramped up pressure on for-

eign journalists. Press freedom deteriorated in Hong Kong, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and several Pacific island states. Burma and Nepal registered score improvements. The US remains one of the stronger performers in the index, but it suffered a significant negative shift for 2013, from 18 to 21 points, due to several factors. “The limited willingness of high-level government officials to provide access and information to members of the press, already noted in 2012, remained a concern, and additional methods of restricting the flow of information became apparent during the year,” the report said. The world’s eight worst-rated countries remain Belarus, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

Ukraine says that militants won the east KIEV, May 1 (agEncIEs): It is by now a well-established pattern. Armed, masked men in their 20s to 40s storm a public building of high symbolic value in a city somewhere in eastern Ukraine, evict anyone still there, seize weapons and ammunition, throw up barricades and proclaim themselves the rulers of a “people’s republic.” It is not clear who is in charge or how the militias are organized. Through such tactics, a few thousand pro-Russian militants have seized buildings in about a dozen cities, effectively establishing control over much of an industrial region of about 6.5 million nestled against the Russian border. Day by day, in the areas surrounding the cities of Donetsk and Luhansk, pro-Russian forces have defied all efforts by the central government to reestablish its authority, and on Wednesday, Ukraine’s acting president conceded what had long been obvious: The government’s police and security officials had lost control. “Inactivity, helplessness and even criminal betrayal” plague the security forces, the acting leader, Oleksandr V. Turchynov, told a meeting

Pro-Russian gunmen in camouflage uniforms guard an entrance of an administration building they seized on Tuesday in Luhansk, one of the largest cities in eastern, Ukraine, on Wednesday, April 30. of regional governors in Kiev. “It is hard to accept but it’s the truth. The majority of law enforcers in the east are incapable of performing their duties.” With Turchynov’s acknowledgment that a significant chunk of the country had slipped from the

government’s grasp, the long-simmering conflict in Ukraine seemed to enter a new and more dangerous phase. Whether that amounts to the lasting dismemberment of Ukraine or hands control of the east to Russia and its president, Vladimir V. Putin, were

among the many questions left unanswered after Turchynov delivered his stark assessment. Whatever the longterm effects, the militants’ seizure of symbolic buildings in cities throughout the country’s southeast is serving what analysts in

Russia and the West say is Mr. Putin’s short-term goal of so disrupting normal life there that the pro-Russian separatists’ plans for a May 11 vote on autonomy from Kiev could trump Ukraine’s plans to hold a presidential election two weeks later. While Russia denies any

Afghan and foreign forces kill 60 near Pakistan border

Kabul, May 1 (REutERs): Afghan troops backed by Western air power have killed at least 60 militants near the Pakistan border, Afghan security officials said on Wednesday, in one of the single biggest assaults against the Talibanlinked Haqqani network. U.S. officials say Washington has intensified its drive against the network in an attempt to deal a lasting blow to the militants before foreign combat forces depart at the end of the year. The National Directorate of Security, Afghanistan’s main intelligence agency, said in a statement that about 300 Haqqani insurgents and foreign fighters came under intensive fire on Monday when they tried to storm Afghan bases in Ziruk district of Paktika province. Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said Afghan forces

were already in position after receiving information about imminent attacks by the insurgents. “Hundreds of insurgents tried to take over the district centre but we were there and hit them with a huge blow,” Sediqqi told Reuters, adding that five Afghan policemen were wounded. “Dead bodies, wounded fighters, their weapons and pick-up trucks were left on the battlefield,” Sediqqi added. The NATO-led international force declined to comment. The Haqqani network, which professes obedience to Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar, is believed to have been involved in some of the most deadly attacks of the Afghan war. The group has been blamed for attacks on hotels popular with foreigners in Kabul, the bombing of the Indian embassy in the capital, a 2011 attack

on the U.S. embassy and several big attempted truck bombings. The United States blacklisted the group as a terrorist organisation in 2012. It also accuses Pakistan’s powerful spy agency of supporting the network and using it as a proxy in Afghanistan to gain leverage against growing influence of its arch-rival India. Pakistan denies that. Monday’s battle occurred in the southeast province of Paktika which shares a long and porous border with lawless areas in Pakistan where foreign fighters and the Haqqani network are believed to be based. The Obama administration has created a special unit based in Kabul to coordinate efforts against the militant group, officials familiar with the matter have told Reuters. It was set up late last year, as part of a new strategy that involves multiple government agencies.

cow’s aggression. The Poland stop will be added to a previously scheduled trip to Normandy to mark the anniversary of D-Day and to Brussels to meet with other members of the Group of 8, reconstituting it as the Group of 7 now that Russia has been suspended. But none of that is expected to deter the militants. Since April 6, they have been smashing their way into local offices and hastily erecting barricades outside, wearing uniforms without insignias. The latest to fall was Horlivka, where on Wednesday armed men appeared at the City Council building and began checking the documents of anyone entering. In Donetsk, a tough mining city, the militants say they will conduct a referendum on May 11, and other cities under separatist control are expected to follow suit. Gunmen in Luhansk seized control of that city’s administration on Tuesday and declared their intent to join in. To date, however, there are no voting offices, nor have any ballots been distributed. They have not even decided what question they want to put before voters. Nevertheless, the buildings now seized could serve the effort. A sample ballot reported in the Russian news media suggested voterswould be asked whether they support a declaration of independence for the “people’s republic.” There was no mention of joining Russia. Although Russian is widely spoken in the east, which abuts Russia, credible opinion polls suggest that at most 20 percent of citizens want to join their

giant neighbor, Aivazovska said. For Mr. Putin, the disruption ensures that Ukraine cannot firmly join the West by becoming a member of NATO or the European Union. That would comport with his strategy in Georgia and Moldova, where Russian troops occupy small sections of the country, with Moscow leaving the status of the enclaves up in the air, neither leaving nor claiming them as Russian territory. After five months of violence and revolution, Aivazovska said, nerves are jangled. “You go to bed at night not knowing whether you will wake up in a different country,” she added, echoing almost word for word a leading writer, Oksana Zabuzhko, interviewed two days earlier. In some ways, the situation seems no more certain for Mr. Putin. As leaders in Serbia and Croatia discovered during the Balkan wars in the 1990s, once guns, money and a little importance are doled out to locals charged with unsettling their territory, the militants can slip from their supporters’ grasp. In Slovyansk, the eastern Ukrainian town where the armed men are most firmly in control, local militia leaders say they now hold about 40 people, including seven Europeans in a German-led military observer mission captured last Friday. They were paraded before cameras Sunday, much as scores of United Nations peacekeepers captured by Bosnian Serbs in 1995 were filmed chained to bridges. Putin, who values relations with Germany, hinted early Wednesday that the observers could be freed.

Erratic sleep may affect memory later: Study

nEw yoRK, May 1 (Ians): In your 40s and miss on that crucial sleep either because of erratic lifestyle or odd working hours? Get your sleep habits back in shape as extreme changes in sleep duration from middle age to older age may worsen memory function. In a study on 15,263 women participants, researchers found that women who slept five or fewer hours either in midlife or later life had worse memory than those sleeping seven hours per day. “Women whose sleep duration changed by greater than two hours per day over time had worse memory than women with no change in sleep duration,” said Elizabeth Devore, an instructor in medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) in the US. Participants were female nurses and were free of stroke and depression at the initial cognitive assessment. “Given the importance of preserving memory into later life, it is critical to identify modifiable factors, such as sleeping habits, that may help achieve this goal,” Devore stated. Getting an ‘average’ amount of sleep, seven hours per day, may help maintain memory in later life. Greater changes in sleep duration appear to negatively influence memory in older adults, the study, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, noted.

‘Vitamin D deficiency may lead to prostate cancer’

nEw yoRK, May 1 (Ians): Get under the morning sun sooner rather than later as vitamin D deficiency has now been linked to aggressive prostate cancer, an alarming study indicated. “Vitamin D deficiency could be a biomarker of advanced prostate tumour progression in large segments of the general population,” said Adam B. Murphy, Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. More research is needed, but it would be wise for men to be screened for vitamin D deficiency and treated, Murphy added. “This is the first study to look at vitamin D deficiency and biopsy outcomes in men at high risk of prostate cancer,” informed Rick Kittles, an associate professor in the department of medicine at University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). To reach this conclusion, scientists examined data collected from a diverse group of more than 600 men from the Chicago area who had elevated prostatespecific antigen (PSA) levels or other risk factors for prostate cancer. Each man was screened for vitamin D deficiency before undergoing a prostate biopsy. The authors were surprised to find that vitamin D deficiency seemed to be a predictor of aggressive forms of prostate cancer diagnosis in African-American and European-American men. “These men, with severe vitamin D deficiency, had greater odds of advanced grade and advanced stage of tumours within or outside the prostate,” Murphy added. Unless it is severe, vitamin D deficiency is fairly asymptomatic, so more effort needs to be put on screening. It is a good idea to get your levels checked on a yearly basis, said the study published in the journal Clinical Cancer Research.

role in stirring the unrest, Secretary of State John Kerry and others have flatly accused the Kremlin of sending operatives to the region to organize, equip and direct the Ukrainians who make up the pro-Russian militias. The presence of 40,000 Russian troops just over the border is also contributing to the instability, particularly as Russia has warned repeatedly that it will intervene in Ukraine if the safety of the ethnic Russians there is threatened, a sweeping claim that could justify an incursion at almost any time. But so far that has not been necessary. Through stealth and misdirection, and in defiance of Western sanctions, Russia has managed to achieve its immediate goal of what Western and Ukrainian officials believe is rendering Ukraine so chaotic that it cannot guarantee order, mend its teetering economy or elect new leaders to replace Turchynov and the acting government installed after the pro-Russian president, Victor F. Yanukovych, fled in February. “Until May 25,” when the presidential vote is scheduled, “is unfortunately still a lot of time,” said Olga Aivazovska, a cofounder of Opora, an independent election monitoring and polling group. Whether a vote will take place — and how valid it could be if parts of the east do not take part — “is a big puzzle,” she said. Days after imposing new sanctions on Russia, President Obama announced that he would travel to Poland in June to reassure Eastern Europeans nervous about Mos-

Rockets stay alive, as Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni resigns Spurs and Raptors win

SAN ANTONIO, MAY 1 (AP): Houston avoided elimination from the NBA playoffs and trimmed its series deficit against Portland to 3-2, while San Antonio and Toronto pulled off home-court victories on Wednesday to claim 3-2 leads in their series. San Antonio led throughout in beating Dallas 109-103, led by Tony Parker who played despite the early-morning birth of his first child; Toronto blew a big lead against Brooklyn before recovering to edge Brooklyn 115-113 and Houston pulled out the win it needed to stay alive, beating Portland 108-98. Parker scored 23 points while Manu Ginobili had 19 points and Tiago Splitter added 17 points and 12 rebounds for San Antonio, which will host Game 7 if Dallas manages to square it 3-3 at home on Friday. Tim Duncan added 16 points and 12 rebounds and Kawhi Leonard had 15 points for the Spurs. Vince Carter scored 28 points on 10-for-16 shooting from the field for Dallas, while Dirk Nowitzki had 26 points to better by 10 his previous average in the series. Carter's 3-pointer with 3 minutes left pulled Dallas within 98-94 but Parker followed a minute later with his only 3-pointer of the game. Toronto appeared to be cruising to victory when it led Brooklyn by 26 points but saw that lead evaporated and needed a 3-pointer from Kyle Lowry to get back ahead and win 115-113. Lowry scored a career playoff-high 36 points, while DeMar DeRozan had 23 points, Jonas Valanciunas scored 16 and Greivis

Vasquez added 15 for the Raptors, who would advance to face Miami in the second round with a victory in Game 6 on Friday in Brooklyn. Joe Johnson scored 30 points and Mirza Teletovic had 17 for the Nets,

who scored 44 points in the fourth quarter but lost their final chance when Andray Blatche fired a pass well over Deron Williams' head into the backcourt for a turnover. Toronto led 94-72 with 11:23 remaining, but

Brooklyn scored 15 of the next 18 points, including a four-point play by Alan Anderson, to make it 97-87 with 7:15 remaining. Johnson later converted a threepoint play, then made a 3 to tie it 101-101 with 3:16 left.

LOS ANGELES, MAY 1 (AP): Los Angeles Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni resigned Wednesday after less than two seasons on the job. Team spokesman John Black confirmed D'Antoni's resignation, ending the brief tenure of the Lakers' fourth head coach in less than three years. D'Antoni won 67 of 154 games after taking over the Lakers early in the 2012-13 season, replacing the fired Mike Brown, who lasted just 71 games after replacing 11-time NBA champion coach Phil Jackson in 2011. The injury-plagued Lakers were 27-55 this season, their worst campaign in more than 50 years and the second-worst winning percentage in club history. With Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash and Pau Gasol sitting out large chunks of the season while the Lakers lost an NBA-worst 319 man-games to injuries, the 16-time NBA champion franchise missed the playoffs for the first time in nine seasons and only the third time in 38 years. "Given the circumstances, I don't know that anybody could have done a better job than Mike did the past two seasons," Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said. "On behalf of the Lakers, we thank Mike for the work ethic, professionalism and positive attitude that he brought to the team every day. We wish him the best of luck." T h e 6 2 - y e a r- o l d D'Antoni had one year left on his contract, but wanted the Lakers to pick up his option year for 2015-16 to have any chance of success. The Lakers apparently refused, leading to D'Antoni's resignation. D'Antoni walked away from a $4 million payday for next season, although he may receive a portion of

that money as severance. A phone message left for D'Antoni wasn't immediately returned. Despite the Lakers' injuries on a roster consisting mostly of players on oneyear contracts, Los Angeles fans largely directed their anger during a rare down season toward D'Antoni. Lakers great Magic Johnson, who was sharply critical of D'Antoni's coaching style, hailed the news on his Twitter account. "Happy days are here again!" Johnson tweeted. "Mike D'Antoni resigns as the Lakers coach. I couldn't be happier!" D'Antoni also coached the Suns and the Knicks, reaching two Western Conference finals with Nash in Phoenix before having much less success in New York. D'Antoni's signature up-tempo style of play seemed an odd match from the start with the aging, ball-dominating Bryant and the Lakers, who ran Jackson's deliberate triangle offense to perfection. Lakers owners Jerry and Jim Buss curiously chose D'Antoni to replace Brown over Jackson, who strongly contemplated a return for a third stint on the Los Angeles bench. Jackson became the president of the Knicks in March. Kupchak said he will begin the search immediately for the Lakers' fifth head coach since 2011 — including Jackson, who walked away from the team after falling short of a third consecutive championship. D'Antoni's departure will allow the Lakers' overhaul to begin in earnest after their worst season since 1957-58 back in Minneapolis. Los Angeles missed the postseason for just the second time in the 17-sea-

son career of Bryant, who occasionally clashed with D'Antoni. The Lakers have a top10 pick in a strong draft and just three players under contract for next season, including Nash and Bryant. Ancelotti quenches Madrid Bowden returns to Elite Panel of ICC Umpires thirst for Decima chance

Real's coach Carlo Ancelotti celebrates after winning the Champions League semifinal second leg soccer match between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid at the Allianz Arena in Munich, southern Germany on April 29. (AP Photo)

MADRID, MAY 1 (AP): A jubilant Real Madrid celebrated the opportunity to play for "La Decima" on Wednesday after coach Carlo Ancelotti quenched an obsessive 12-year wait to reach the Champions League final. Madrid sailed there for the first time since 2002 thanks to Tuesday's 4-0 win at titleholder Bayern Munich for a 5-0 aggregate semifinal victory. Ancelotti said he could literally taste Madrid's desire to play for a record 10th — La Decima — European Cup after landing in the Spanish capital last summer. "When I arrived in Madrid I understood the importance of this competition, you could taste the desire to win 'La Decima' in the air," the Italian coach said after the victory. "That's why we're in the final. I hope we have this same attitude in the final." Ancelotti's achievement eclipsed former coach Jose

Mourinho as the Spanish giant ended a three-season semifinal losing streak in the competition. The last time Madrid played in the final it beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 under another mildmannered coach, Vicente del Bosque. Spanish sport daily AS ran the headline "Scorched Munich" in reference to Bayern's promise of its Allianz Arena being an inferno for Madrid's visit, while Catalan sport daily El Mundo Deportivo screamed "Shipwreck!" above a photo of Bayern coach Pep Guardiola. A victory in the May 24 final at Lisbon's Estadio do Sport would see Ancelotti match former Liverpool manager Bob Paisley's record of three European Cup victories. "Truthfully, I don't have any personal ambition. Football has given me so much and I am totally motivated at working to bring this club, its fans, and its players to the top," said

Ancelotti, who has already guided Madrid to the Copa del Rey trophy this season. "The objective was so great, I am so proud to have achieved it." Ancelotti, a two-time Champions League winner with AC Milan, has a personality that is quite contrasting to predecessor Mourinho, who managed to divide Madrid's squad, fans, and the media during three ill-tempered seasons in charge that netted no appearances in the final. Since Del Bosque's exit, Madrid has gone through 10 coaches in search of the one to get it back to Europe's top. The diplomatic personality of Ancelotti has been the best fit. "That's my way of working," said Ancelotti, who has united the dressing room following the turbulent seasons past, and a poor start in his rookie campaign. "(President) Florentino Perez is very happy and he congratulated everyone. Getting to the final is not easy, but it was our No. 1 objective. We've had a fantastic Champions League campaign, now let's see what happens next." While the arrival of Gareth Bale has improved Ancelotti's team, forward Cristiano Ronaldo is enjoying one of his best seasons. The Portuguese international scored twice against Bayern to stretch his European record goal tally in one campaign to 16 goals. "A final is always complicated to win. But I don't care if Mourinho or another coach is there," Ronaldo said of his fellow Portuguese. "It's going to be in my country, and I want to win it." Madrid must quickly harness the momentum from the victory and translate it to the Spanish league race, where it sits six points behind leader Atletico Madrid with one game in hand. It hosts Valencia at its Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Sunday.

DubAI, MAY 1 (IANS): New Zealand's Billy Bowden has made a return to the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires replacing Tony Hill. This was the only change from last year as the International Cricket Council (ICC) named the panel for 2014-15 Thursday, following the annual review and selection process. Also from New Zealand, Hill had stepped down from the panel earlier this year to take up the role of New Zealand Cricket (NZC) umpire

coach. Bowden previously served on the elite panel from 2003-13 and has so far umpired in 76 Tests, 189 OneDay Internationals (ODI) and 21 Twenty20 Internationals. The Elite Panel of ICC Umpires was selected by the ICC Umpires Selection Panel consisting of Chairman Geoff Allardice, ICC Chief Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle, ex-England player and coach and umpire David Lloyd, and Srinivas Venkataraghavan, former India captain and

international umpire. "Billy's return to the elite panel is a result of his hard work and perseverance. His skills and experience will further strengthen the ICC umpiring team," Allardice said. The Elite Panel of ICC Umpires for 2014-15 commencing July 1: Aleem Dar, Billy Bowden, Kumar Dharmasena, Steve Davis, Marais Erasmus, Ian Gould, Richard Illingworth, Richard Kettleborough, Nigel Llong, Bruce Oxenford, Paul Reiffel and Rod Tucker.

team packed up for the summer. "Every coach should be under scrutiny," D'Antoni said two weeks ago. "Some coaches get fired even after the best years they've ever had. ... There's always things we could have done better, and it's easier with hindsight. Things don't always go smoothly. For the most part, our guys were very competitive. For us, there are some silver linings in there, but in hindsight, it's disappointing for everybody."

Townsend out of World 'Indian football is in better shape today' Cup, Walker a doubt LONDON, MAY 1 (AP): England winger Andros Townsend was ruled out of the World Cup through injury on Wednesday as coach Roy Hodgson sweats on the fitness of other players he planned to take to Brazil. Although Hodgson remains hopeful Arsenal duo Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere, and defender Phil Jagielka will recover in time, right back Kyle Walker is a major concern. Hodgson will announce his 23-man World Cup squad on May 12, and England's World Cup opener is on June 14 against Italy in Manaus. The 22-year-old Townsend, who broke into the England team last year, will definitely not be making the trip. The Tottenham player requires surgery to repair damage to ligaments in his left ankle and will be out for 10 weeks. "He had a fantastic debut bursting onto the scene, and he did really well," Hodgson said. "I have been a bit disappointed for him that he has not had as much playing time over recent months ... but to see him ruled out like this with a serious ankle injury is a cruel blow." Arsenal winger Theo Walcott and Southampton forward Jay Rodriguez had already been ruled out of the tournament. Walker, the Tottenham defender, had been in line to be first-

NEw DELhI, MAY 1 (IANS): Indian football's outgoing youth development chief coach Colm Joseph Toal said he was proud of his seven-year stint and feels the youngsters are in better shape today. The Englishman, whose contract expired Wednesday, said he was incredibly lucky to have been in India for over seven-and-a-half years. "In today’s football environment that is something to feel very proud of. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) can take great credit for the support and encouragement they have given me over the years. I hope our coaches presently in place will also receive the same support in the future," Toal was quot-

ed as saying by AIFF.com. Asked how he would describe Indian football in 2014, Toal said: "I feel the game is in better shape today. There is a greater awareness of what we need to do to catch up with the rest of the football world than when I arrived in 2007." Toal said when he took over there were some challenges like every job had. "Every new job has its own different set of challenges. The important message for all coaches is to give their support staff and players the confidence and create a positive environment where there won’t be any problems, but only solutions," he said. Toal said all the coaches, who have worked under

him, are as good as any in the world. "We have had a group of coaches in our national team programme who, I feel, could coach anywhere in the world. We do not have enough of them but the coach education programme that Robert Baan and Scott O’Donell have put in place will hopefully, in time, produce the numbers of well qualified coaches any serious football playing Country needs," he said. When Toal took over in 2007, the AIFF had just launched its youth development programme. "The money that has been invested have given us the opportunity to expand and improve our junior national teams.

choice right back in Brazil but he has not played since March due to a pelvic injury. "We haven't been told for certain that he will be out for the next six to 10 weeks but we are concerned that it has been a long time he has been out," Hodgson said. "During that time he has not been able to do any training with the rest of the team as far as I know. I know he has had another injection. We are waiting to find out whether that helps." Although Wilshere, the Arsenal midfielder, hasn't played since breaking his left foot during England's win over Denmark in March, Arsenal just doesn't "want to push him back too early," Hodgson said. Likewise, Hodgson said he had been reassured by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger that there isn't "too much to worry about" Oxlade-Chamberlain's prospects of recovering from a groin injury. There has also been positive news about Jagielka's recovery from a hamstring injury that has kept him out for Everton since February. "He has been participating to a decent level in training," Hodgson said. "Everton have keen not to throw him back in before his injury is 100 percent right. We don't have any fears he won't be Barbora Balazova of Slovakia returns a shot to Ri Myong Sun of North Korea during their round fit to come with us." robin match of the World Team Table Tennis Championships in Tokyo on May 1. 'There's so much more to life 'I make my own wild medicines' than drinking and doing drugs' Shailene Woodley opens up about her huntergatherer diet inspired by Native Americans

emi Lovato encountered troubled waters in her adolescence, marked by drug abuse, bulimia, and self-mutilation. But the 21-year-old pop star has since put it behind her, opening up in the summer issue of Cosmopolitan for Latinas - on newsstands May 6 - about a turning point she experienced on her birthday last August during a trip to Kenya for the Free the Children charity. 'I was used to drinking and doing drugs on my birthday,' she said. 'I always imagined my 21st being a huge party where I'd get s***-faced and go crazy. But I realized that there's so much more to life than that. Imagine walking 10 miles a day just to get water for your family? We have so much to be grateful for.' The Heart Attack hitmaker has endured a long tumultuous journey, resulting in a trip to rehab in 2010 to treat her drug addiction, eating disorder, and cutting, though only the latter two were reported at the time as reasons for the stay. Demi is now in a much happier and healthier place, meanwhile keeping her bipolar disorder in check with daily medication. ‘That’s what works for me – medicating, checking in with people, being honest, and being grateful for things,’ she said. Demi still recalls the emptiness she used to feel, even as a seven-year-old child star sing-

ing and dancing her heart out on Barney & Friends. ‘It was that loneliness you get when you’re sad and it’s the middle of the night, and even though you have family and friends to call, it’s hard to pick up the phone,’ she said. However, the Camp Rock star has come a long way since then, earning her status as Cosmopolitan's Fun, Fearless Latina of the Year, and she now truly enjoys the success she has attained. ‘When I was younger, I needed someone in the spotlight to idolize, who stood for positivity and light and happiness, and wanted to change the world,’ she said. ‘And because I didn’t have that, I

realized, I want to do that, if only for my 12-year-old little sister.’ However, Demi is still reaching for her dreams. ‘I’m very proud of how far I’ve come, but I definitely want to win a Grammy one day, and I dream of winning an Oscar,’ the beauty said. ‘I want to continue to tour and build my fan base and make music that will last for decades.’ Having suffered for years from self-image and self-esteem issues, Demi has learned to embrace herself. ‘I feel sexiest when I’m comfortable – this means when I’m in my element onstage, and also when I’m wearing a T-shirt, jeans, my leather jacket, and no makeup!’

here's no doubt Divergent actress Shailene Woodley is quirky. She eats clay, makes her own medicines and collects a monthly spring water supply from mountains. But that's only the beginning of the 22-year-old star's nature-centric lifestyle. Woodley has opened up about some of her more alternate tendencies, like eating directly from the earth, in her cover edition of May’s Natural Health magazine. 'As a teenager I started researching factory farming and genetically engineered foods and agriculture and I found myself asking, "What's the point of environmentalism if we keep separating ourselves from nature?" The message was, "We've gotta save the Earth!" when in reality, we are nature and we are the Earth,' she told the magazine. Woodley said she started researching what Native Americans in Southern California and other indigenous cultures ate after she

become wary of pesticides on vegetables but realised that organic food was too expensive. 'I found that not only were they hunter-gatherers, they were also healers who relied on the plants around them. I thought that was really profound, so I started learning about all the wild plants in my area, as well as all of the wild medicines that I could gather and create for myself. I was in control of my body and I could feel what was happening. It was eyeopening. The actress said she was fortunate that many of her friends subscribe to the same lifestyle. '(My friends and I) joke that our conversations sound like a S--- Wild People Say video. We were foraging for wild leeks in Maine last year and one of my friends said, "Does anyone want the rest of my rhizome?" And we all cracked up, thinking that only here and with this group of people would someone ask that question.' The Hollywood ac-

Atletico beats Chelsea to reach CL final Relentless Atletico sends message to super rich clubs in football LONDON, MAY 1 (AP): A season of the unexpected for Atletico Madrid will end with a shot at a first Champions League title against its fiercest rival. Having disrupted the established order of power in Spanish football, the capital's second club successfully negotiated its first European Cup semifinal in 40 years on Wednesday, overwhelming Chelsea 3-1 to setup a meeting with Real Madrid. "They're a very powerful club used to those big European nights," Atletico coach Diego Simeone said. "It's been many years for us as a club, so it'll be a new experience. But we're keen and excited." His side will also be undaunted by the prospect of facing the nine-time winners in the competition's first derby final. Simeone's side could be taking the Lisbon turf on May 24 as champions of Spain for the first time since 1996. Just two wins are required from the final three domestic matches to break up the Barcelona-Real Madrid

stranglehold on the trophy. "Playing like we play we are the strongest team in the world," Atletico midfielder Tiago said. "And we deserve what we have in this moment." Although former Atletico striker Fernando Torres put Chelsea in front at Stamford Bridge after a scoreless first leg, Adrian Lopez leveled before halftime and Diego Costa netted a penalty on the hour before Arda Turan capped the visitors' second-half superiority with the third. "We completely controlled the game against a great side," Simeone said through a translator. It was a fourth successive semifinal loss for Jose Mourinho since winning the competition in 2010 with Inter Milan, after previous setbacks at Real Madrid before returning to manage Chelsea last year. Without Mourinho, Madrid has ended a 12year wait to reach a Champions League final after trouncing holder Bayern Munich 4-0 on Tuesday

and 5-0 on aggregate. After seeing Chelsea win the 2012 Champions League and 2013 Europa League from afar, Mourinho's first season back at the club could now end without a trophy. Although the Blues are second in the Premier League, they require leader Liverpool and third-place Manchester City, which has a game in hand, to slip-up in the final matches. If Mourinho wanted to prove criticism of recent ultra-defensive tactics didn't affect him it came with the

lineup, with six defenders in the starting eleven. In an anxious opening, Mark Schwarzer, deputizing in the Chelsea goal for the injured Petr Cech, was beaten in the fourth minute — with only the crossbar blocking Koke's looping shot. This was a night when Chelsea had its goalkeepers in both nets. Thibaut Courtois was making his Stamford Bridge debut, but for Atletico where he has been on loan since joining Chelsea from Genk in 2011. The Belgium international had little to do before he

was picking the ball out of his goal in the 36th minute after being beaten by a player who started his career at Atletico. Willian outmuscled Diego Godin and Filipe Luis on the right flank, and as he fell over, Cesar Azpilicueta picked up possession. The Spaniard swept the ball back for Torres, who beat Courtois with a shot that deflected off Mario Suarez. Torres doesn't often get the chance to celebrate a goal — this was just his 10th all season — but he didn't revel in scoring against his

NEW DELHI, MAY 1 (PTI): India’s dismal performance in the international season gone by pushed them down the ladder in the ICC Test rankings with the team finishing fifth in the annual updated list issued on Thursday. Australia have gone top in both the formats for the first time since December 2008. Australia last held the number-one Test ranking in August 2009, when they were displaced after losing 2-1 to England. India, who were thrashed during trips to South Africa and New Zealand in their most recent Test assignments, have slipped from third to fifth in the table after dropping 10 ratings points. In the ODIs list, Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men held on to the second spot. India’s 2010-2011 victories against Australia, New Zealand and West Indies (away), as well as a drawn series against South Afri-

ca, no longer count to the rankings. Similarly, India’s 20112012 victory against the West Indies, and 2012-2013 victories against New Zealand and Australia are now weighted at 50 per cent. There has been little change to the ODIs rankings, despite the top three sides -- Australia, India and Sri Lanka -- seeing their rating drop. Australia have now edged ahead of South Africa, a team which had held the number-one position since August 2012. In the latest table, Australia have gained eight ratings points to move up from 115 to 123, while South Africa has dropped from 127 to be level on 123, with Australia ahead of South Africa by a fraction of a point, the ICC said in a statement. The results from 201011 have now been dropped from the rankings calculation, while the results from 2012-2013 are now reduced

former side. Not that Chelsea had much to celebrate for long as its defense was unpicked too easily. Tiago floated the ball to the byline where Juanfran had space to cut it back, past John Terry and Ashley Cole, to the unmarked Lopez to strike into the net. It took Schwarzer's two-handed save at the start of the second half to deny Turan's skilful shot from close range, while Courtois also repelled Terry's header. Chelsea's search for a goal saw forward Samuel Eto'o brought on in place

of left back Cole in the 54th minute. The Cameroon international's first contribution was back in defense, bringing down Diego Costa as he struggled to contain his fellow forward. Before taking the spotkick, Diego Costa placed and then re-placed the ball on the spot several times — earning a booking for timewasting. But he eventually dispatched the ball in the net. "The penalty killed the game," Mourinho said. "After that moment the game was controlled by Atletico, very mature and profes-

sional." Although Schwarzer's post kept out Turan's header, the winger moved into a central position to tap the rebound into an empty net in the 72nd. There was no way back now for Chelsea. And Simeone, a nervy figure all night, was finally unburdened of his anxieties, launching himself on a Mourinhostyle dash down the touchline. "He has changed our mentality," Atletico's former Chelsea midfielder Tiago said of Simeone. "We all work together, we work as a team."

to a weighting of 50 per cent. In 2010-2011, Australia had lost to India (2-0) and England (3-1), while they suffered a 4-0 defeat in India in 2012-2013. Australia captain Michael Clarke was delighted with the news that his side was now on top of both the Test and ODI tables. “We are incredibly proud to be the numberone ranked team in the world in both Test and ODI cricket, which are two of the team’s most important

goals,” said Clarke. “There has been an enormous amount of hard work and effort on and off the field that has led to this result. “However, the true test of a great side is sustained success and now our goal is to maintain these rankings and continue to play great cricket as we lead into challenging Test series against Pakistan and India, and the ICC Cricket World Cup at home,” he added. Looking back at the past season, which has turned out to be the cornerstone of Australia’s rise to the number-one ranking in Tests, Clarke said: “We had a fantastic home summer against England and a great series win away against South Africa earlier this year, but the challenge now is to continue that form. “We have a huge amount of respect for the South Africa side, and the length it held the number—one Test ranking is

testament to the great side it is. South Africa will no doubt continue to be a formidable opponent in Test match cricket,” said Clarke. Australia were the first team to be ranked numberone in Test cricket when the ICC introduced the current rankings system in 2003. Since the system was introduced, Australia has been ranked as the number-one Test side for 74 months, more than any other side. South Africa are a distant second, having spent 23 months on top. South Africa had outstanding 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 seasons when it won six of the seven Test series it played. It defeated Sri Lanka (2-1), New Zealand (1-0), England (2-0), Australia (1-0), New Zealand (2-0) and Pakistan (3-0). However, as these series are now only weighted at 50 per cent, it has dropped four ratings points to slip from 127 ratings points to 123.

In Imola, crowds honor Senna 20 years after death

IMOLA (ITALY), MAY 1 (AP): The crowd resembled the kind of gathering normally reserved for a Formula One podium celebration. Only this time, the thousands in attendance fell silent at exactly 2:17 p.m. Fans, family members plus fellow and current Formule One drivers attended a solemn but also festive memorial Thursday to mark the exact 20th anniversary of Ayrton Senna's death at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. The ceremony was held on the Imola circuit's Tamburello curve where Senna crashed into a concrete wall at about 300 kph (185 mph). Austrian rookie Roland Ratzenberger, who died in qualifying a day before, was also remembered. Among those in attendance were Gerhard Berger, Senna's teammate with McLaren, and current Ferrari drivers Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen. "I think we all agree that he was the best driver of all time," Berger said, drawing a loud round of applause. "Even if it's a sad moment we're all very

happy to be here and remember Ayrton." Alonso, who has won two F1 titles, was 12 when Senna was killed. "For a lot of us he was our idol," the Spaniard said. "I used to watch his races on the news and when you saw that yellow helmet and the No. 1 on his car, that really hit you as a kid. "I didn't have a chance to know him or race with him and there are a lot of people here who

really knew him," Alonso added. "But I also see a lot of kids, so he continues to influence a lot of people." Senna's niece Paula was among those representing the driver's family. She was impressed with the big turnout. "It means that somehow he reached people's hearts, with his career and also with the way he was as a person," she said. "I feel like he's alive in people's hearts, even after all this time. ... It's beautiful." Organizer Ezio Zermiani was beaming with delight at the event's success. "We thought it may be something that was forgotten. But then this morning when I exited my hotel, I saw the traffic lining up longer than when there was the race here — even though there are no cars racing. So it has become a Grand Prix of remembrance." Zermiani pointed out how the safety improvements introduced to F1 in the wake of Senna's and Ratzenberger's deaths have helped prevent any more fatal accidents in the sport in the last 20 years. "So Ayrton didn't die for nothing," he said.
