This combination of December 6, 1999 and September 26, 2013 photos shows Luther Htoo, left, and his brother Johnny at their jungle camp in Myanmar and 14 years later in western Thailand. When they were kids, the twins were bulletproof and invulnerable to land mines - or so went the story that briefly made them famous as hundreds of guerrillas followed and even worshipped them in the southeastern jungles of Myanmar. Over a decade later, their “God’s Army” is no more, and the twins’ greatest accomplishment may be that both are still alive. (AP Photo) Story on page 9

Vikheho stresses on paradigm shift in structures of social organization Our Correspondent Kohima | November 2
Parliamentary Secretary for Irrigation & Flood Control, Vikheho Swu today identified self- reliance as the most challenging aspect for Naga society at present. In this, he urged the various organizations and unions to plan for a sustainable system so that they become self sustainable. The Parliamentary Secretary asserted that progress of the state will be “greatly hampered” if organizations or unions do not plan for self-sustenance system. He stressed on the need to make a paradigm shift in the structure of social organization in Nagaland. Stating that DAN government has many programmes to facilitate the growth and development of
the youth, he encouraged the youth to come forward and utilize the opportunities. Speaking at the “Colours of Life” (Variety show) organized by the Old Ministers’ Hill Youth Organization, Kohima here at the State Academy Hall; Swu urged the performers to adhere to three principles to materialize a successful life. Firstly, he said, the most important thing in life is to acknowledge God and stated that God has given life for a purpose. Secondly, Swu called upon the youth to respect their elders and parents and at the same time to heed what their parents teach them. Thirdly, he urged them to be honest in life. He asserted that everything would go wrong if there is no honesty. Parliamentary Secretary for Law & Justice, Labour & Employment and Land Revenue, Dr Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire and Nagaland Contractors & Suppliers Union (NCSU) President, Pele Khezhie were also present at the event.
heart, diabetic patients
NEw DElHI, NOVEMBER 2 (IANS): Diwali, the festival of lights, is meant for feasting, bursting crackers and enjoying with the family, but doctors warn that patients suffering from lung and heart diseases, hypertension and diabetes need to exercise caution as their condition might worsen. Highly saturated food like sweets consumed during this period can increase cardiac problems and aggravate health issues in people with hypertension and diabetes. “PostDiwali, heart patients and people suffering from hypertension, diabetes and breathing problems queue up in the hospitals as they do not abide by the precautions prescribed by doctors during such time.” Purshotam Lal, chairman of Metro Hospitals and Heart Institute, told IANS. Also, very importantly since the weather is also undergoing a change, people should be well clad and not get a cold. Last but not the least, binge eating, drinking and smoking should be avoided during festivities, he said. “Since it is celebration time, people consume highly saturated food and sweets that affect those suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure and as it is winter time too they do not exercise which lands them at the doctor’s doors. Those with heart and lung problem should say no to crackers,” he said. He said during Diwali, respiratory problems also see a rise due to increase in pollution due to crackers. Lal said to prevent respiratory problems, people, particularly those who are prone to bronchial asthma, should avoid being too close to burning fire crackers and avoid smoke.

Govt calls for joint Public Consultative meet on Nov 6
C M Y K
KOHIMA, NOVEMBER 2 (DIPR): The Government of Nagaland, Home Department Political Branch has convened a joint consultative meeting with various NGO representatives, including Naga Hoho, ENPO, NMA, NSF, ENSF, ENWO and various tribal Hohos to discuss Article 371 (A) and Rule of Executive Business, besides other issues. The meeting will be held on November 6 at 11:00 am at the Capital Convention Center, Kohima. Nagaland Chief Minister, Neiphui Rio is also scheduled to attend the meeting. At least 3 members from all the organizations have been requested to attend the meeting.
Over recent years, there has been an upsurge of young voices calling for the existing state of affairs to be overhauled. Have the issues facing the Naga people become more complicated over time? How is the younger generation’s approach to social conundrums different from the older generation? And how optimistic are people regarding this pathway to ‘change?’ These questions reflect the complexity and gravity of the conditions impacting the people’s quality of life and desire for real change. Yanfo Kikon, creator of the Naga blog expresses that, “Every single young Naga is a stakeholder of our future, so we have every right to decide our own future. Without my knowledge, why should I let somebody decide my future? How can anybody accept any decision made on our behalf without our knowledge?” he exclaims. Yanfo adds that the new generation is “informed, aware, united and bold enough to speak out.” “The new generation dreams to live in a Nagaland which is run by legitimate leaders who listens to the voice of the people, values the rule of law and lives an exemplary life,” he adds. The older generation’s experience is distinct to them and given the historical context, their responses initially were borne of good faith. On whether the older generation has constructively addressed the challenges remains a question. Yanfo points out that the difference between the approaches of the young and the old “lies in Rationality and an Objective approach.” He states that the new generation “has matured early and is more intellectually capable because of all the struggles we had to endure and the pain of seeing our older generation” always accusing each other. He states that online platforms have “leveraged the real meaning of Democracy where our God given right

to speak and express our thoughts freely without fear.” “This force will grow stronger and prove that when people guided with conscience and vision fight together, there is no might in this world which can suppress such a movement,” he adds. He cites the recently held ACAUT rally calling it a “people’s movement.” Yanfo responds to the cynics by asserting that “this rally is just a spark,” the catalyst, and that “a revolution is just around the corner.” Prominent social activist and elder Niketu Iralu points out that the present scenario in Nagaland is “shockingly bad.” He criticizes the tendency to assign blame and calls for each Naga to accept that “all of us are responsible for the current state of affairs.” “Accepting your own fault,” according to Iralu is a primary step towards achieving change. Iralu calls the current surge of public action and opinion as a “wonderful thing.” He points out one main difference between the young and the old in the Naga context is that the young are more “articulate and are prepared to take a stand.” He expresses optimism for the future of Naga society and hopes that with enough ma-
turity and wisdom, “change will be achieved.” He urges the need to be calm, reasonable and to settle differences through self introspection and by assuming responsibility. Rozelle Mero from the People Channel affirms that the internet has provided a platform for the disgruntled and perturbed youth to voice out their frustrations. She opines that these frustrations are justifiable and that “it has reached a saturation point.” “How can they not be angry when 65,000 to 100,000 young people in the state are unemployed?” she queries. Mero says that the idealistic mindset of the youth is a thing to be lauded. However, she emphasizes that they need to realize that change will not happen overnight and that tremendous amount of effort and introspection is required to achieve this idealistic end. Regarding the future, Mero reveals that, “When I talk to young people, I feel optimistic. However, when I look at the people in power, who are supposed to lead and set an example, the hope fades away.” She emphasizes the need for young leaders to step up and instill in themselves a sense of dignity, honor and selflessness.

The innocent public are made stoic under bitter emotions with mental disorientation which accounts to so many psychatric patients in Manipur. If ever the cause of sister Irom Sharmila's philosophy on against innocent killings is understood, then it is ought to refrain from such public massacres. So, it is pleaded to whoever is responsible of the blast to have mercy on innocent public," AMTU general secretary Romeo Bungdon said. AMTU then appealed for the state authority to serve more inputs and to detect and thwart such “fanatic or diabolic honour killing type” to innocent public. AMTU also conveyed its heartfelt condolence to the bereaved families.

JorHAt, NoveMber 2 (ANI): In an endeavor to impart skills to uneducated youth, mainly school drop outs to help them become self-reliant, a bamboo handicraft workshop was recently organized in Assam’s Jorhat district. The week-long training programme was organised by the Institution for Culture and Rural Development (I-CARD) at the Rain Forest Research Institute in Sootea. Twenty 20 people, belonging to extremely poor families participated in the skill development workshop, where they were taught to make different bamboo products. “I dropped my studies and was staying at home. My brother brought me to I-Card. After coming here, I got to learn to make many bamboo products. They are providing us very good training. This is good for us, as otherwise I would have been staying at home,” said
Nani, a trainee. I-CARD has been consistently taking initiatives to impart vocational training to unemployed youth in the region. The Institute works with the Rights Foundation under the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT).The institute also plans to create a data base of unemployed youth and jobs available in various sectors. “These young boys and girls can get engaged in the handicraft sector and can earn a minimum of Rs.3000 to 4000 per month by making this sort of articles. IMPHAL, NoveMber 2 (IANS): Manipur Home Minister G. Gaikhangam Friday rejected the idea of imposing president's rule in the state, after a series of bomb blasts left 10 people dead in two months. "It is something absurd and unbecoming to demand president's rule. The situation does not warrant imposition of Article 356, as the government is tackling the situation," Gaikhangam told IANS. "The law and order situation is totally under control. Such minor incidents (bomb blasts) have also taken place in other parts of India and even the world," the home minister said. On Thursday, the opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) demanded that Article 356 be invoked and president's rule be imposed in the state, following a series of blasts which have so
far claimed 10 lives. "Imposition of president's rule has become inevitable, to save the people of Manipur from further miseries," TMC's Manipur state unit president Kim Gangte told reporters Thursday evening. Alleging that the ruling Congress government has totally failed to protect the lives of the people, the former Lok Sabha member said: "President's rule might be one of the most effective means to protect the lives and properties of the people of the state." "The Okram Ibobi Singh-led government is not at all concerned about the safety of our people, since they have the majority in the assembly," Kim said, while expressing surprise that the central government was tight-lipped on the recent blasts in Manipur. The home minister, however, rubbished Kim's
allegations, saying that the law and order situation has "much improved, compared to the previous years". "We have taken all steps to ensure security to the people and to prevent rebels from carrying out such attacks," Gaikhangam said. At least 10 people died in bomb blasts triggered by suspected rebels in the past two months, including the recent blast at the Moirangkhom bus stand which killed three people and left four injured. In the 60-member assembly, the opposition parties comprise Trinamool Congress (7 members), Manipur State Congress Party (5) Naga Peoples' Front (4) and one member each from the Nationalist Congress Party and the Lok Jan Shakti Party. The ruling Congress has a strength of 42 in the house.

in the hill districts. It then demanded for the early solution to the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU) crises. Another demand of ATSUM is the improvement of healthcare in the hill districts by making all PHSC, PHC, CHC and DHC functional. It demanded that proper equipment with required specialist doctors and nurses in the district hospitals of the hills be posted. One prime demand of ATSUM has been to estab-
hit the tourism industry in the state and the tourist flow is down by 70 percent since the agitation started," MTDF chairman Robert G. Lyngdoh told IANS. "Implementing the ILP would adversely affect Meghalaya as a tourist destination," Lyngdoh said, adding isolation is not the answer to the issue of influx as there are ways out to tackle this. Quoting official statistics, the MTDF chairman said in 2009-10, close to 600,000 tourists visited Meghalaya. During the same period, 58,000 tourists visited Mizoram and 22,000 Nagaland. Rishot Khongthohrem from Mawlynnong said the tourism inflow to Asia's cleanest village has been adversely affected as footfalls have declined because of the uncertainty prevailing in the state due to the ILP agitation. "Mawlynnong village depends on tourism but the number of tourists has fallen. It is affecting our livelihood," he said. Echoing Khongthohrem, tribal villagers in Sohra - formerly Cherapunji - the wettest place on earth, claimed that there has been a drastic fall of tourists visiting their region in the wake of the ILP agitation. "I won't say that
that should be revamped. Securing the proper functioning of the Hill Area Committee (HAC) and requiring the Governor of Manipur to discharge his special responsibilities under 371-C of the Constitution on India is one area. To bring the present Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in Manipur at par with other ADCs in the North-Eastern states of India is also one of the areas. ATSUM also said re-organization (Delimitation)
of assembly seats on the basis of the latest population census and sharing 30/30 seats between the hills and the valley is one area that should be done for the effective governance. Lastly, ATSUM also demands for the protection of tribal rights on land and natural resource. "Despite our shared histories down the years, tribal people in Manipur have not been able to work out a cohesive mechanism to propel all of us to a better and
brighter world. It is therefore to this twenty first century challenges to the tribal/ Indigenous people living in Manipur that the ATSUM calls all of us to – a better and brighter future for which you and I, our children and our grandchildren after us will be proud of. It is also an earnest appeal to the nontribal communities to help us get what we rightfully deserve. We shall neither rest nor waver until our genuine democratic demands are fulfilled," ATSUM pledged.

have had a major impact on the state's serenity, which has been unblemished for the last few years. The Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum (MTDF) had even cancelled off its annual Autumn Festival - one of the biggest events in the state calendar attended by tourists from India and abroad coming in over the years. The Forum has been organising various programmes including Guinness World Record attempts to promote the state. Over a dozen pressure groups have been insisting that the ILP, a British-era law otherwise a mechanism to prevent the influx of "outsiders", a term that applies to illegal Bangladeshi immigrants as well as people from other parts of India. The ruling Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance is however firm in opposing such an "archaic" step that it feels will hinder the state's economic development by blocking investments. Even Indians from the rest of the country currently require an ILP to enter northeastern states like Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Mizoram. "The agitations over the ILP have severely
lish a separate state Commission for Scheduled Tribe (ST) in Manipur. ATSUM also said ST reservation norms as per the latest roster be adhered. It further demanded for encouraging equitable development through special economic package for the hill areas of Manipur. Effective governance of the hill areas also another key demand of the tribal student body. According to ATSUM, to have effective governance there are certain areas

M'laya agitation leads to drop in tourist footfalls SHILLoNg, NoveMber 2 (IANS): There has been a sharp drop in tourist footfalls in the picturesque northeastern state of Meghalaya - which literally means abode of the clouds over the past two months in the wake of an agitation by more than a dozen political and other pressure groups on stopping "illegal immigration" from Bangladesh. For now, Meghalaya is "not on the minds of travellers" opting for a visit to the wettest place on earth in Sohra or to Asia's "cleanest village" of Mawlynnong bordering Bangladesh, said Richard Rynjah, a tourist taxi driver. Meghalaya, with a population of just three million, is experiencing a series of shutdowns, night road blockades and picketing of offices from Sep 2 after the breakdown of talks between the government and the agitating groups on the inner line permit (ILP) issue. Several cases of arson have been reported in the East and West Khasi Hill districts and more than 50 proILP activists have been arrested. The agitations, in the form of shutdowns, picketing of government offices and night road blockades

there have been no tourists visiting Sohra. A handful of them visit Sohra but rush back to Shillong due to the agitation. There is a sense of fear and insecurity and tourists do not want to get caught in the crossfire," food vendor Doreen Sohkhlet said. However, ILP-protagonists said that the agitation has nothing to do with the decline of tourists to the state. "We cannot say that the agitation has resulted in the decline of tourists in Meghalaya since there have been no records on the inflows in the past years. We cannot come to the conclusion of a connection between the agitation and the inflow of tourists," said Sadon Blah, a spokesperson of one of the agitating organizations. Blaming the Meghalaya government for its failure to play an active and positive role in promoting tourism, Blah said: "The unregulated inflow of the migrants in the guise of tourists might provoke a change in the demographic structure of the state in which we the minorities (Khasi, Jaintia and Garo - the indigenous people of Meghalaya) might become fit for tourists to visit us in a museum."

What’s Next? I
Khekiye K. Sema, IAS (Rtd)
planned out. The normal tendency of the masses would be to wait on ACAUT to bring out their future plan of action for us to participate in, again. It should clearly and realistically be understood that ACAUT is manned by simple folks like you and I and just as much as it baffles us when a question of "What's next?" comes up, it surely will be baffling them too. Would it be right for us to leave this issue to them alone to sort out or would you believe that you and I too have a shared responsibility to lend them a helping hand by bringing out constructive action plan proposals and suggestions beyond the point we have travelled so far, through serious brainstorming within your own crowd and have it coordinated with ACAUT eventually? With or without ban, I had hoped that NTC would bravely pick up this "excessive taxation" yoke, which is the mother of all challenges that is devastatingly impacting everyone's lives, as their highest prioritised agenda. Without doubt this is de heart piercing subject which has touched every living soul in Nagaland, which has perpetuated circumstances of existence devoid of opportunity and dignity. This includes them too. It is however obvious that they have prioritised other safer important issues perhaps because they themselves have been put under a ban. 'Taking up the parental responsibility over ACAUT would amount to double jeopardy' would perhaps be a safe argument to hide under without doubt. 'By picking up the ACAUT baggage it could unnecessarily jeopardise their (ACAUT) already difficult case' would be another good argument on their side. I'm trying to help them argue against my own point of view. All said and done the simple question that each living Naga needs to honestly answer to himself/herself first is "whether it is the right thing to do to stand up against injustice and tyranny?" or "do we do nothing and let this insanity to continue"? Depending on the honest answer to these questions it should propel each one of us forward towards finding a solution without leaving it to others to follow up... banned or not, threatened or not. It simply boils down to whether you have what it takes to stand up to injustice and tyranny. In 1789 the common man in France answered these questions in the form of a Revolution and beheaded their King. It was not as if the common Frenchman had a cake walk without threats, prosecution, torture and deaths from the ruling class. They faced all of this and still said enough is enough. They had what it took. Egypt and Libya saw the fall of their respective Governments and the likes of Mubarak of Egypt shook the world with his fall while Gaddafi of Libya was shot dead without a trial by his own people like the tyranny that he was. The citizens of those countries
have just returned home after a rewarding experience in the ACAUT rally which was impressively responded to by the citizens of Dimapur including many more from other Districts. Hats off to all who braved the ban and the sun! Way to go people, way to go. Let me however first set the record straight. I had a vague feeling that I was being looked at as a member of ACAUT from the way people were speaking to me after the rally. I am not a member of ACAUT but I believe what they are doing is RIGHT. My support for a just cause is genuine and I wanted to show my support by being there in person and saying what was needed to be said rather than support it from a safe distance. Thousands did the same and I'm so proud of all who stood to be counted that day. I have assured the ACAUT members that my humble service would be available for them wherever and whenever required. What really warmed my heart and made me feel that my effort of the morning has been worthwhile was the enthusiastic response of the youth who, without exception, poured their hearts out to tell me " for the first time we have been moved and motivated to do something"..." for the first time I felt proud to be a Naga" endless comments of such kind. This is good...real good. Know that a truly motivated younger generation can become the strongest catalyst to change. Are you all listening? Do you all hear me, out there? Remember what happened in our immediate neighbourhood of Assam when their Student Federation picked up the illegal immigrants issue? It momentarily paralysed the Government and a new Political Party (AGP) was born to change the political landscape. The issue of what AGP achieved when it came to power is not the focus. The issue of what youth can do is. If they could so can we. Frankly, nagging thoughts had bothered my mind all the way as I drove back to Kohima after the rally. Over the years I have often observed momentary outpouring of mass courage openly displayed while still with the crowd. This public courage gradually diminishes and finally disappears when the crowds are all gone and fear starts gnawing at your vitals once again as you get exposed to threats in solitude. We must not let this happen! WE MUST NOT LET THIS HAPPEN!! We must be driven by a higher just purpose. The dust of excitement has settled. "What's next?" is a question in everyone's mind I'm sure. I am sure ACAUT will be wrestling with this same question as well. Wallowing on the overwhelming success of the rally would be like dwelling in a fool's paradise. The rally was just a wakeup call. It was just the beginning. The real test of our true character lies ahead. Future course of action needs to be carefully
had what it took to face injustice and tyranny. Do we? We are not asking for the heads of the Faction leaders. Definitely not. Our plea to them is "please iron out your political differences and Unite and form one Naga National Government so as to facilitate relief to the common man to pay one tax to one Naga National Government". That's it... but we have no takers. After riding on a high moral horse by pointing fingers at other NGOs for failure to uphold the Naga interest and aspiration the time has arrived for NTC to translate their accusation against others and otherwise prove their worth in action. In as far as I am concerned "unabated taxation" issue supersedes any other subjects of importance. This is my personal point of view. It is obvious that NTC does not agree. Rather than face the challenge head on by taking ACAUT under its wing directly, they too have resolved "to extend solidarity and support" to ACAUT just as was proclaimed by the State Government and the Naga Hoho. After all it is definitely safer to do so from a safe distance. Perhaps NTC will now understand that people's perception of priorities differ. The Naga Hoho has achieved a despicable level of irrelevance by their initial endorsement of support for ACAUT followed by a pin drop deafening silence against the ban. I can't find any more adjectives to describe their yellow canvas. So here we are: We still have no apex organization for the Nagas of Nagaland willing to shoulder the responsibility to rid ourselves of this heavy difficult burden that the masses are reeling under. NTC has a busy calendar to support the land owner's rights as envisaged in the Article 371(A) which is good of course and deal with gender equity issues without having even one woman member in their entire organizational set up and also deal with the unspecified Naga aspirations whatever that means. At the end of the day I would rather salute Dimapur Naga Council for the courage they have shown to shelter ACAUT and help them on. Keep it up DNC you folks are worthy Nagas worth our respect. I have spoken at length about the potentiality of youth as a catalyst of change. Think about it with care. Since all their elder brother and sister organizations have shied away from this responsibility I pose a serious question to the youth organizations, the NSF and ENSF: What say you? The voices you have heard in the Dimapur rally are voices that must be heard in every nook and corner of Nagaland if we are to see change happen. I have repeatedly written and spoken about a second plebiscite on "ONE TAX FOR ONE NAGA NATIONAL GOVERNMENT". It is in your hands and mine to make this happen if we have the guts and the will to see it through. The Factions will never unite on their own

when they each enjoy unrestricted and unquestioned authority to tax the masses at will in the name of "sovereignty" which is just another word for them to suck life out of the Nagas. It is more to do with their "individual economic sovereignty" to live in comfort and style at the cost of you and I, the fearful common man. Unless they redefine this debased hypocritical form of sovereignty it is our inherent duty to say NO. Just because of our instinctive fear for guns we have remained silent thus far despite the torturous existence being inflicted upon us for so long. It is time to question all the Factions to let the masses, the tax payers, know where all our taxes have gone. Where or how has it been spent? We have the right to know as tax payers! WE HAVE A GOD GIVEN RIGHT TO KNOW. Nowhere in the world do people pay tax without knowing how it is being spent except in Nagaland... it is 'Anti-National' to raise such a question. It's not that we don't know. We definitely do know where it is going. The evidence of our taxes being spent are glaringly seen in every townships especially in Dimapur sector. The biggest buildings, the foreign SUV floating around, the landed properties you name it...our taxes are visibly written all over it. It would hurt anyone with a God given conscience to watch a mother shed desperate bitter tears, unable to provide two square meals a day to her child or a decent opportunity for her child's education because of this rampant uncontrolled taxation, while the national workers flaunt their ill gotten wealth. We are not envious of them. Not one bit. God is there for sure and He will take care of all of them in His own patient time with our prayer support and a mother's tears. It is this very personal greed which is dictating the need for bans and threats against any initiatives that appear on the horizon to question their misdeeds. It has nothing to do with sovereignty! From this you can clearly see that the Factions are not ever going to unite on their own accord. It is for you and I to induce the proceedings to its logical conclusion. How long can the people tolerate this... that is why you heard a thunderous voice which said ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! The Factions must have heard it too but more to their annoyance rather than acceptance of their defaults and the need to rectify them. NSF & ENSF we have a job to do don't you think? Don't leave this issue to ACAUT alone. They need serious help. We need to spread out. Think about it. I am a nobody but know that I would be with you all, all the way should you need me. This is my answer to "what's next?" As this is an important issue I am sharing my e-mail address in order to keep the communication channel opened: kksema@rediffmail.com Feel free to share your point of view.

The Present Politico-Economic Crisis: A Harvest Of 50 Years Of Political Indifference? Kaka D. iralu
and their daughters followed in their footsteps and are today, our Ministers and Bureaucrats. Other educated Nagas like me also did more or less the same thing. We all turned our backs to the national crisis and desperately tried to build our own economic futures. We left the fighting and the defending to a few dedicated national workers who had to slog it out in the jungles until 1997. Tragically, among these dedicated national workers, the more educated among them, split the defense and the struggle into 7 splinter groups. 2. The resulting Economic Crisis: As the general Naga public turned their backs and tried to evade this political crisis that had overtaken their history, their indifference ultimately led to the present economic crisis. Some 10% (Perhaps) of the Naga population tremendously benefited from both the State enterprise as well as the Naga national enterprise. These ten percent Nagas became corrupt “State” as well as “National” millionaires from the political crisis that had hit the Naga nation. Those on the State side carried on a semblance of law and order business but could not check even skyrocketing prices of basic essential commodities not to talk of real development in road constructions, water supply or even electricity. (Even after 50 years of statehood, the writing of my present article has been interrupted twice due to power failure in the capital) On the other hand, besides massive accumulation of wealth by some national workers in the name of Naga nationalism, the national struggle even went overseas which necessitated huge finances to maintain all these foreign offices. The result was an UNABATED eight parties- 1State and 7 national- taxation on every Naga citizen that is today threatening to squeeze the very life out of the nation. As stated in the beginning, even at the end, I still believe that the present crisis is an economic crisis which was caused by a political crisis. The crisis has developed to its present dangerous situation because some of us exploited the political crisis while the majority of us were indifferent to it. Now, as this political and economic panoramic mess stares back at you, where do you find yourself in the picture? Please don’t say, “I can’t find myself anywhere”. Please don’t say that, because this is not a foreign picture but our own picture staring back at us.
Whether we like it or not or whether we are aware of it, human beings are political beings and can never run away from that identity and responsibility. In my own case, I tried to run away from that identity and responsibility for 41 years of my life (1956-1997). I took up my pen and got involved only when my own life and that of my daughters were nearly snuffed out from crossfire in a fratricidal shoot out right in the middle of Kohima town in 1997. The above statement however is not an assertion that politics is the most important thing in life. Besides the many other responsibilities of life, I personally think that salvation and eternal life is the most important thing in life. But the inescapable fact of life is that even if one gets saved, one is not automatically transferred into heaven. Saved or unsaved, we still have to live our whole lives in a political world-Pastor, Reverends and Evangelists included! When the political world in which we live is under oppression or anarchy- our family lives, social lives, economic lives and even religious lives are affected. Now, the present crisis in Nagaland is not a religious crisis. It is not at all a RELIGIOUS EMERGENCY. In my humble opinion, it is a political crisis that has led to an economic crisis. And here, I do not believe that a heavy dose of religious fervor or evangelistic crusades is going to solve either our political or economic problem. On the contrary, I believe that only a political solution will bring an end to our economic crisis. Having stated that, let us now try to analyze what political crisis in our land has led to our present economic crisis. To be systematic in our analysis, let us first address the political crisis and then address the economic crisis that has resulted from it. 1. The Political crisis: The Naga political world burst aflame in 1955 when 53,000 Indian troops invaded Nagaland on the false claim that Nagas are Indians and Nagaland is Indian Territory. The then inhabitants of Nagaland who were our grandparents and parents most nobly and honorably took up the defense of our lands from this foreign invasion. Most of these defenders of our land were uneducated peasants and farmers. They died in their hundreds and thousands. As for the few educated among these generation, they opted for a State within the Indian Union and settled down as Ministers and bureaucrats. Their sons

NOH 2013 contestants with the judges after the elimination round on November 1.
mokokchuNg, November 2 (mexN): Two contenders have been eliminated from the ongoing Naga Orpheus Hunt (NOH), 2013. The first elimination of the season was held at Eastern talkies on November 1 here amidst heartbreak and tears as the contenders bid farewell to the Orpheus family and dream of becoming the next Naga singing sensation. Out of the 18 probable contestants, Abetoli and Ajungba Lkr, both from Dimapur were the two un-
lucky crooners who could not make it through to the next voting round, which is ethnic round, owing to minimum votes received during the open public voting. It may be noted that five contestants - T. Apenla Sangtem, Vesedo Meteu, Pongchai Konyak, Abetoli and Ajungba Lkr entered the danger zone and were given a chance to prove their worth to earn a wild card to go through the next round. After their performances, the judges deliberated their decisions based
on their talents and musical versatility; the judges awarded the green cards to T. Apenla Sangtem, Vesedou Medeo and Pongchai Konyak. The Naga Orpheus contestants will be hitting the road throughout the State starting from this November. Four districts have already been slotted in their itinerary for the promotional tour. The organizers will announce the places and dates later through print and other media.
I
am not surprised with the dictum served by the NSCN(IM) on ACAUT and NTC, for even worse can happen in the days to come, for reason we all know or the insensitivity and unaccountability of DAN Govt despite Nagaland burning with unprecedented public fury, again for reason we all know. What is, on the contrary shocking at the same time repulsive is the disappearance of the apex people’s organizations- NGO, civil societies, tribal Hohos etc- from the beginning to the ultimate scene of public protest against unabated unauthorised taxation, extortion (and exploitation) within the State of Nagaland perpetuated under the garb of Naga unsolved issue. The NGO/ civil societies etc which claimed of representing the mass of people or section of people silently vanished like a ghost at the terminal point
whereby the rather non-represented people of all ages and sections in tens of thousands came out to the street on their own volition to demonstrate their erstwhile unheeded, un-unified and unexploded protest against the insatiable life-sucking-human-leeches of the elected government on one side and multiple unelected governments on the other side. I am sure even a semi literate person understands the bottom line “enough is enough” and bona fide citizens of the State foresee the meaning of “who lives if Nagaland dies?” The mass conversion in ACAUT rally is clear: “We will no more serve as serflike in our home land”. All said and done the dictum of one reactionary force, the timidity of a popularly elected government to act and in between them the desertion of the aggrieved people by
their own organizations at critical moment have driven home three conclusions: 1. The people of Nagaland are definitely not with the factions on unauthorized taxation and extortion no matter how hard the factions hopelessly try to paint them with national colour. Freedom is one thing commonly shared but coercion of the present type is another thing totally unacceptable. Perpetuation of the unacceptability will create further tension beyond salvage. 2. A government formed by large-scale buying and selling of votes during election is not obliged to remain accountable to the voters and a government formed with the support of the factions will remain a dummy government. To be a government for the people or for the factions depends on the choice
of those who are in power and apparently not in the power of those who are agitating in the street. 3. The apex people organizations and tribal Hoho leaders are not likely to come out boldly in support of the movement against unauthorized taxation, extortion (and exploitation) and incur the displeasure of the defensive State Govt and the offensive faction as both are against the activity of ACAUT and formation of NTC. Unless proved otherwise the people of Nagaland on their own has to fight for their right to life, liberty and property. We can do so by learning from each concerned individual and by uniting each individual’s strength. Starting from concerned individual ACAUT has done it, NTC has done it; we, together can accomplish the task.

Future Naga Social Imagination for Transformation Lemwang Chuhwanglim

T
here is time for everything, a time to rise and a time to set. A proverb says “An old man/woman is a setting Sun and a young man/ woman is a rising Sun” means people growing old never return to young energetic moment because they move towards the end of a journey like a setting Sun; young generation is a rising Sun who just began to give light before it reaches the next generation or the next Sun rise. One painful thing that inevitably enters the minds and hearts of old generation must be a regret of setting poor examples for young people who will evaluate their history of greed, corruption, injustice and immorality socially, religiously and politically. My social imagination for the future Nagaland is based on the paradigm of eradication of corruption through the formation of a commission. This commission can be formed both in Government and non-governmental sectors in consensus ideas of the Naga grassroots and young people. The commission could be called as Corruption Eradication Commission. Regardless of the past and present Naga leaders-contractors, political leaders, Business people, Head of Institutions, Universities, Colleges, Bureaucrats, Church leaders and so on will be thoroughly investigated by the commission. This could be foreseeing as a distinctive form of new society in Nagaland. It delineates the new form of society which leads toward new social thinking in central to justice and development prevail in the future society, where every single Naga citizen will live with no regret of the form of such reformed society from generation to generation. The kind of reformation will continue to set an example for every new born Naga to live with honesty and faithfulness in every single deed he/she engaged in the Naga society. Unlike Durkheim, who once came up with a theory that religion plays a vital role in bringing people together in the society,
or I would call his social imagination that religion unifies people and links people to a common history and strengthens people to their common task, which in brief, religion is the source of social identification (Baun, Gregory, 1975), there was a time where Naga people hoped for religion to bring solution and transformation. However, in the current Naga society, religion has become vague that cannot be trusted and relied on. The new social symbol to unify and bind the Naga people into one voice for the social transformation is truth and justice which will be brought through the existence of corruption eradication commission. Like the eighteenth-century intellectual movement known as the Enlightenment in attribution to the social development that became one of the hallmarks for social change (Gurminder K. Bhambra, 2007), the truth and justice through corruption eradication commission in the future Naga society will become the Enlightenment period. As a process toward this Enlightenment society, what are some peacebuilding strategies can be adopted in collaboration with the policy of the commission? In a counterpart to Johan Galtung, a Norwegian sociologist and the father of peace studies, concept of resolution which emphasizes on ending conflict/problem immediately in terms of questioning “how do we end something that is not desired?, John Paul Lederach, a professor and scholar of peace building developed a concept of Transformation, which emphasizes more on the question “how do we end something not desired and build something we do desire?” (Lederach, 2003). One can apply both theories of resolution which focus on ending things for immediate remedy and transformation which focuses on changing things from undesired to desired one for a sustainable development. However, in the Naga society, resolution strategy seems a vague idea ever since the history of wars, conflicts and corruptions among Nagas. It
is a vague because the ended wars, conflicts and corruptions emerge again and again as it did not transform into something a consensus desired goal. Therefore, future Naga society needs such commission that strongly deescalate the attitudes of bribery, injustice, self interest, illegal systems and social structures that can transform from what we do not desire to something that many grassroots and young people desired. How do we transform undesired things to desired things? The predicted strategy required to transform the present corrupted Naga society is the formation of corruption eradication commission. This idea emerges from my observation on the powerful strategy emerge implemented by the Indonesia politics. It is one of the powerful strategies developed by the government of Indonesia, comprises of intellectuals, politicians, young activists, well known professors and smart grassroots people to investigate every single citizen, especially political leaders, business people, contractors, lawyers themselves, artist and many other prominent figures in the country who misused any funds, engage in bribery, black business, white robbery and any hidden agendas. Thorough investigations are done based on the suspense of anyone who is informed by any citizens and the culprit could be anyone who perpetuate any corruption both in the past and present. The investigation implies to both the retired and current leaders in the country, the commission investigates construction of building, buying of plots, cars and other properties of any leaders who are under suspected list of corruption. If any culprit is found misusing any funds to obtain the mentioned properties, he/she is brought to law and order with a capital punishment of imprisonment based on the amount of corruption he/she engaged in and then any properties belonging to a culprit would be sold out bring back the amount to the State. For instance, recently a high ranking police officer who bribed

t was mid April 2013, the Air Asia flight AK1241 had just touched down at Subhash Chandra Bose International airport. As it goes to a screeching halt, I got up to disembark from the plane. It was then that a young lady, accompanied by her mother, stood up behind me and politely asked, “Hello, is this your first time in India?” I was dumbfounded! Literally unable to speak and my mind went blank for a few seconds. Then I regained composure and replied, “No, actually I have lived and worked in Kolkata for more than 3 years now.” Then with a tinged of sheepish grin she replied, “Ok, that’s alright then.” This encounter led me to recall my former colleague who had casually asked me, “Do you consider yourself an Indian?” During that time as well, I had the shock of my life and replied by pointing to the picture and interview of MC Mary Kom featured in the Times of India – before her Olympic fame, “Do you know this lady and do you consider her an Indian?” The fact was that my dear colleague had no idea about this lady who had won 5 international laurels for India already. There are lots of other cases where I have been asked, “Bhai, aapkaha se aarahahain?” or “Are you a Japanese?” or the “Chingchong” quip and the “Kancha” gesture from different quarters. The fact is, I am the least bothered by these petty smirk or subtle indications. But what really bothers me is our understanding of India: its history, geography, ethnic and racial composition, and most importantly our idea of a nation. No one has to dig so deep in order to know and understand how the nation of India came about. A dear friend of mine, who is from the overseas, mentioned that India should actually be 50 or more countries. And I could not agree more if I have to subscribe to a mono-ethnic and mono-racial idea of a nation. This was proved true by the recent announcement of Telengana state by the UPA II which spurts off countless number of demands for states. Given the chance, many of the so called states of India may choose to have an independent existence apart from India. One must be reminded that India is a loosely and delicately coalesced union, in that, even its constitution has to accommodate the people group with the least presence or the lowest caste and end up being the most exhaustive constitution in the world. Looking now at the North Eastern area, there lived groups of people who are mostly of mongoloid descent having their own distinctive culture, languages and dialects. Many of my mongoloid friends had expressed a sense of feeling alienated and discriminated just for the reason for being looking different. These were also proved true by acts of some mindless and unscrupulous, ill informed,
bigoted and illiterate lots who think that they had served the nation by doing ill to its own citizens. It is no secret that there has been a lot of separatist movement in the North Eastern part of India. A lot of them have genuine and factual interest in making a separate nation on the basis of ethnic lines. And there are also groups who fight for identity within the political framework of India. But reality differs, as much as India is trying its best to unify the North, South, East and West, one should not be blinded that the integration of the North East is only at the initial stage. Funds may flow, governance may be established and intersection of business may happen; but the people are far from being unified. This may be attributed mainly to the geographical isolation, racial and cultural differences, insensitivity and blunder of the GOI in dealing with insurgent movements and the ill-informed masses that are of the more hairy and browner skinned, and the narrow and racial-centrism of both. The future of these two largely diverse regions will depend on the sensitivity and understanding of each other’s differences. It is highly probable that there will be a fall-off between these two, nearer or farther down the line – the tie will either break or bind – naturally. There are things that one doesn’t choose, take for instance – race – I didn’t choose to be born with a yellowish mongoloid feature or my friend across the divide didn’t chose to born a hairy and browner skin. If that is the reason for my being discriminated, I am not at fault; it was God who made the mistake! And there are also things that one must learn as a citizen of a nation. In this instance, my brown friends are far lagging behind and are prone to assumptions. Many of them doesn’t even have a fair idea of how and what the composition of the North East is, and that’s a simple case, some of them connote the Hindi language as a “National” language! Which was not, and if it was so, I would be very much disqualified to be an Indian. A colleague of mine once pointed to sari clad North East colleagues, “You look beautiful in the Indian traditional dress!” Oh my, I was never informed that a sari is “the” India traditional dress, or a salwar shirt, for that matter. This implies an utter disqualification of folks from the North East for each of them has their own traditional costumes. In speaking about race, if the idea of a nation is a mono racial entity, I would gladly disqualify myself from being an Indian. This is the perception of the case in many other countries as well. For instance, at a stall in overseas, I have to settle for one of my parents as being foreigner, not an Indian. If not, they were not convinced. But the sting is much lighter in overseas as they are very much unaware of the reality and composition of India, neither do they learn about all the people and the land. But there are in-
stances when things are hard to swallow when you are ridiculed in a country that you called your own. The government of India is also partly to be blamed for these imbalances. It was their idea to put parts of the North East under the Ministry of External Affairs for as long as till 1972. This clearly indicates a stratum of estrangement from the region. And, it was said, there is no inclusion of the history of the North East into the Indian history in the curriculum and text books of the Schools. There is also a grave danger for the Indian government in that, most of the areas have to be written as outside of India. And the creation of DoNER as a department in the central government and installing NEC purely reduced the North East Chief Ministers and Cabinets to a mere Project Managers or Project Coordinators under the unnecessary bureaucratic layer. This allegedly has been an attempt for accelerated development of the area. But we do not hear any Eastern, Southern, or Northern area development department of which some of them are worse off than the North East. Amongst many, these are few of the issues which might need to be dealt to ensure smoother interflow of socio-political integration of the areas in question. If not, the fall-out is ultimately bound to happen. If that is the case, it will not happen with a single ethnic entity of only the Nagas, Meiteis, Kukis, Zomis or Assamese alone. The people will look for their racial and cultural affinity in a deliberate attempt to withdraw from the futile effort of merging with the impossible. In retrospect, there had already been a very strong counsel from the erstwhile Michael Scott to unify the highlands in order to form a Sovereign entity. The Zomi leaders were also allegedly advised of the same by the said sympathizer whilst he was called on in Robert Hospital by the former party at Shillong. If the North Easterners find it futile to integrate themselves into the browner area and vice versa; there will come a time when the people of the North Easterners realize the futility of playing the ethnic game and seek an alternative to their plight as a unified whole. And the browner skinned will also realize the futility and admit the reality. Finding one’s identity in a country like India is literally a muddle. One has to look for direct and indirect elements that define one’s identity as a citizen. And I am not apologetic to say, “If India is about being hairy and brown skinned; I am not an Indian. If India is about being sari or salwarkamiz clad; I am not an Indian. If India is about speaking a particular language; I am not an Indian. If India is about my own choice; I do not remember choosing to be an Indian.” As of now, I am a political Indian, mongoloid descent and a cultural fusion of indigenous and western. Of which I am and deny not. The writer/author may be reached at: hangzo.biak@gmail.com
someone to vote for the other political party was investigated and penalized to 3 to 4 year imprisonment. Another example is the commission investigated one of the political parties for buying luxuries cars and they were found misusing funds. Those of them who actively indulged in such business were given the same years imprisonment. I predict that there could be someone among the younger generation who would impose the similar strategy of investigating the past and present Naga leaders who may be enlisted in the eyes of common citizens as engaged in corruption. These past and present leaders who engaged in corruption will be thoroughly investigated by using many strategies not just to bring immediate end of solution but to end the undesired society and transform into desired sustainable society from generation to generation. One should avoid misinterpreting this strategy as there were and are no leaders in the Naga society who serve the country with honesty, truthful heart and commitment for the welfare of the common goods. Indeed there are few leaders who honestly and fruitfully serve the country; however, unfortunately they are washed away by the stormy weather of the corrupted leaders. This may affect the disciples (Govt. servants) of the corrupted leaders who indulge in Pay No Work into No Work No Pay or suspension of any Govt. servants who are not on duty where they assigned or posted. The strategy implies to eradicate and transform corrupted leaders and continue to save non-corrupted leaders in the future Naga society. Not all predictions come true but some predictions come true and any prediction is based on the historical fact of the social system and structure run by the leaders of the country. For instance, in 2000 Johan Galtung once predicted the fall of US Empire in 2020 began to come true since the fall of US economy (Galtung, 2010). His prediction came through in US that until today the US, a democratic society has become into a
fallen example for the entire world. He says “when the US empire goes further down, the people will start looking for scapegoat, that scapegoat be a tale which ragging the dog” which he means the relative sizes of US and the Israel, there are small tale and a big dog, for him there will be extreme danger in the US trying to find the scapegoat. This social imagination I predict may sound a threat to many past and present Naga leaders who indulge in corruptions, however, whether it may sound as a threat or not, whatever happens, it happens for the transformation. Unless we break, dismantle and fragment something that is no more useful, we cannot create something that is useful. Therefore, we must fragment and dismantle corrupted leaders to transform into a better future Naga society. In doing so, many Naga leaders who indulge in corruption may try to find a scapegoat which may be difficult to escape from the reality of inescapable and eventually they will rest in a justice home. This deescalation of corruption through the formation of corruption eradication commission will result to the news society in the hands of the younger generation. The spirit of the Naga young generation toward social transformation is a wakeup calls which even a child would aspire to see the new just society different from the current Naga society. The significance of the new Naga society which will fall in the hands of younger generation can bring cooperation, unity; trust building, fare share, eradication of any corruption (NGOs, Govt. UGs, and Immigrants, Manipulation of business by non-Nagas, transportations, and traffic norm) and so on will remain inescapable from the light that torches every single corrupter’s eyes in the night and finger that points every single corruptor’s face in the day. This will be the time where every single Naga child can dictate anyone who indulges in illegal politics, religion, business, economic and way of life and bring them to justice.

INSPIRATIONAL STORIES, MESSAGES, POEMS & SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES
JUSTIFIED. ACCEPTED. LOVED. W Kedo Peseyie
e often make the wrong assumption that people who are active in the church are better off in their personal lives than people who are not. There are several things wrong with this assumption. I will point out one, which is also the most important and fundamental of all. Those active in churches sometimes think that God will somehow love them more because of the “church” work they are doing. Wrong. And those not active in the church, or who never even attend church, think that there is no way God will love them because of their sins. Wrong again. I often meet people from both groups. The first one often says something like this: “I’ve been trying to do everything right. Singing in the choir, leading worship and faithful in all activities. But I cannot understand why I feel so dry all the time. Something is not right, but I cannot point out what exactly.” The second’s problem is simpler: “I know my problem. Sin. But there is no way God will love a person like me.” Many people live their Christian lives in uncertainties and with fear of being rejected by God. For them the Christian life is a performance before God and the church. The amount of grace and forgiveness they receive depends on how well
they perform. The second group could be characterised by Romans 3:23 - Sin. But we often miss the next important verse 24 which says that we have been forgiven and accepted before God freely. This acceptance is not based on anything we have done or will do in future, but it is entirely from God’s love for us. God in his mercy will not treat us in the way we deserve. God in his grace gives us what we do not deserve - forgiven and salvation. For many people, I suspect, this sounds too good that they conclude it cannot be true. And so they continue in their “works” to appease God. Before God, the two groups are equally in sin. One does not stand more righteous before God than the other; both are in need of justification from God. But so long as we chose to remain in one of the groups, we are blocking God from loving us, and seeking other ways to find love while avoiding the Cross of Jesus. So what is justification? Justification is the act of God forgiving sinners, accepting them as righteous, and so putting right their previously estranged relationship with God. Justification is not an act done by us, nor is it something that happens inside of us. But it is an act of God; something that happens inside the heart of God. God declares us righteous. In his heart he resolves to love us. So at this point, our feel-
ings—whether we fell happy, sad, sinful, clean—do not matter. Take the example of a convict in jail. One day the jail warden tells him, “Today all the crimes you have committed have been forgiven. You are now free. Go and commit no more crime.” The convict is now forgiven and freed with no strings attached. This is what God did for us. Our sinfulness does not hinder justification. Our righteousness (which is like filthy rags before God) does not help justification. But it is God’s grace alone. We are declared righteous because of what Jesus Christ did for us on the Cross. Yes, a righteous person may sin, but now he knows that grace is always available because justification is not strictly a one-time-event as some say. It is an
act of God that happens every time a person genuinely repents and seeks God’s forgiveness. But today there are those who are trying to work their own way to heaven by financial gifts or sacrificial service. They undermine the finished work Jesus Christ on the cross and elevate the dignity of the human beings to a status that was never meant to be. Such an attempt to praise the achievements and dignity of humanity by undermining the very source of this dignity can surely bring about a lot of hurt and confusion. Such kind of a shallow humanism that emphasises on effort, traditionalism and legalism can suffocate our churches. Today modern society is trying to elevate the status and dignity of the human
being but they have no idea how to do it because they have lost the truth that man is created in God’s own image and was saved by Jesus’ own blood alone. They have believed in the sufficiency of human efforts for so long that they cannot understand something that works its way down from top to bottom. But that is what Christianity is about: the only religion where God came down looking for lost humanity. Good theology is always given top-down. Salvation is given, not earned. Like forgiveness, it is a gift. I have come across many people who have been hurt in some way or the other by a church that refuses to believe that sinners can feel welcome in the church too. One of the reasons why many people don’t
attend any church is because they don’t feel welcome there. Many feel they don’t have proper clothes to make themselves acceptable there. They don’t feel “clean enough” to come to church. Many of us church people may not want to admit this. We may choose to look the other way, but it is there and it is true. But if tomorrow we turn back to look again we may find our pews empty, no one left to listen to our concept of “righteousness.” Where did they get the idea that one has to be “clean enough” to come to a church? Or that one should wear good clothes to be acceptable in a church? Who made them feel unwelcome? It’s church people with all our traditionalism and institutionalism. If the church is an institution, it is an institution of grace. Justification is vitally important for Christian growth. We need not worry about performance or appearance anymore. There is a deep and solid assurance and joy in knowing that God has declared me righteous and accepted me as his child even before a single good word crossed my lips or my hands performed a kind deed. To me this is the best news in my entire Christian life so far. It is the basis for my assurance in God. The only thing left for us to do is to respond in faith and allow God to love us just as we are. Good works will follow. But that’s another story.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF NAGALAND MISSIONS MOVEMENT
W
hen the American Baptists came to the Naga Hills in the early 1870s, it was not a planned policy of the American Foreign Mission Board but a conviction given by God to one of their missionaries based in Sibsagar (Sivasagar), Rev. Dr. Edward W. Clark. He and his wife, Mary Mead, came to the Naga Hills against the advice of, and also without the official permission of the British Colonial power. Many more American Baptist missionaries followed, giving the prime of their lives to serve the Naga people in the name of Jesus Christ. Recoginizing the purpose of God and in gratitude of the sacrifices made by the American Baptist missionaries, the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) established the Home Mission Board during its annual meeting at Mokokchung in 1962. The late Rev. Longri Ao was the initiator of the formation of this Home Mission Board, and its objective was “To complete the unfinished task of evangelism yet remaining after all the Foreign missionaries had withdrawn from Nagaland by 1955.” The ministry of the NBCC Home Mission Board was gaining momentum and was further strengthened in 1969 when a decision to appoint a full time secretary was taken at the 32nd Annual Session at Tseminyu from January 28-30, 1969. At the same session, it was also decided to have a strong Mission Committee in cooperation with respective Associations in Wokha, Zunheboto, Dimapur and Impur. During the 33rd Annual Session at Molvom in 1969, Mr. Ellis Murry was appointed as the first full-time Mission Secretary of the NBCC Home Mission. The ministry of the Home Mission, with the new Secretary, was launched at an inaugural function on January 5, 1970, in Dimapur. There were two significant actions taken during the initial term of the Mission Secretary. The first was related to a change of nomenclature to reflect the broadened vision of the Mission, resulting in the change from the Nagaland Baptist Home Mission to Nagaland Missionary Movement in 1970. The second was to provide a support base for the Mission branch of the NBCC, wherein the first seven days of the month of May every year was to be set aside for special prayer for the NMM and to raise funds for its projects. The NMM Mission Week became the primary avenue for sharing the news of mission projects with the local churches as well as raising prayer and financial support. In 1972, the first cross-cultural mission project was taken up by the Ao Baptist Arogo Mungdang (ABAM) amongst the Tirap tribe of Arunachal Pradesh. From this point and especially after the widespread Revival in the 1970s, different associations and churches took up mission projects and saw openings of mission fields and supporting missionaries in the North-East region and beyond. A trend began in the 1980s and 1990s where local churches started opening mission fields and sending missionaries and evangelists. Henceforth, the NMM has achieved its primary goal of reaching out to all the unreached Naga brothers and sisters, and mobilized the churches for missions. At this point, the need to review the NMM role vis á vis associations and churches became important. In 2008, a significant change was made with the renaming of Nagaland Missionary Movement to Nagaland Missions Movement. This change was done with the understanding that the church should be the base for mission work.
of India, different part of Asia and Africa. These missionaries function either through NMM, associations or churches.
2. Naga Christian Fellowships (NCF): The main objective of the NCF ministry is to cater to the spiritual needs of Nagas studying or working in these cities. Additionally, it provides an avenue for social interaction amongst the Nagas. The importance of the NCF ministry is underscored by the fact that the majority of these Nagas will return to Nagaland as leaders in the fields of political, bureaucratic and entrepreneurship. Presently, there are sixteen Naga Christian Fellowships in different cities in India with full-time pastors. This NCF functions within the purview of NMM and are either self-supported or supported by different churches. It may be noted that NCF Delhi is directly affiliated to NBCC as a full-fledged church.
3. Hospital Ministry: To care and to comfort the patients and care-givers and to assist the hospital personnel, chaplains are appointed in various hospitals located in Kohima, Dimapur, Mokokchung, and Vellore.
VISION The vision of NMM Ministry is summarised in a simple caption, “The Field is the World: Ready for Harvest.” The vision and motivation remains the same, but mission is dynamic: an approach effective today may no longer be relevant or effective tomorrow. So there is a need to review and formulate new strategies that will be appropriate for the contemporary context As we move into the twenty-first century, the NMM has the following visions: 1. To encourage Churches and individuals to continue to give voluntarily and sacrificially for Missions. 2. Holistic Mission. With the changing scenario of the world’s political landscape and deeper understanding of the Biblical mandate of Mission, NMM Churches shall strive to apply holistic methods of mission. Holistic or transformational mission seeks to address social, economic and spiritual development of the society by committed Christians from various professions. This is another way of adhering to the prophetic voice of sending out 10,000 missionaries. Holistic mission include encouraging professionals into Mission as Tent-Makers, either as short-termers or full-time. 3. In order to fully accomplish the above two challenges, the Nagaland Churches and individuals shall seek to coordinate and cooperate in Mission efforts.
CONCLUSION The Nagaland Missions Movement was established in response to the Great Commission of the Lord Jesus Christ and with a sense of “debt” to the American Missionaries who came “forsaking all” and made immense contributions to the Naga society not only in terms of Spirituality but in all round development. This became a catalyst for the Nagaland Baptist Churches. The Naga Mission consciousness was further heightened by the “prophetic call” in the 1970s by leaders of the NBCC, to send out 10,000 Missionaries. Though it was not the NBCC resolution as such, nevertheless, this “prophetic call” was carried out to all the corners of Nagaland and to the world which became another catalyst for the Naga Mission. This call was made by our fathers for their day and age, the late 20th century, to ACTIVITIES: which the Nagas responded enthusiastical1. Modi Meets Patna blast victiMs’ kin Narendra Modi visits Bihar, meets kin of Patna blasts victims
PATNA, November 2 (PTI): Meeting the families of six persons killed in serial bomb blasts during his Sunday rally, BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Saturday assured them all help from the party. Amid tight security, Modi first headed for Gaurichak in old Patna locality to convey his condolences to the kin of village Azeemchak resident Raj Narain Singh, 65, who had died in the serial blasts. The BJP leader garlanded the photograph of Singh, sat on the floor as he consoled the family and handed them a cheque of Rs five lakh on behalf of the party, said Arun Sinha, BJP MLA from Kumrahr. Singh was a farmer and an ardent follower of Jaiprakash Narayan. He had gone to Modi’s rally without informing his family, the Gujarat chief minister was informed by Bihar’s former deputy chief minister sushil Kumar Modi who accompanied him. Leader of opposition Nand Kishore Yadav was also present. Sinha said the family sought a job for one of the three sons of Singh and Modi assured them he will look into it. Singh’s other two sons are in the Army. “Modi consoled Singh’s widow. Nitish Kumar acting like ‘dehati aurat’ against Modi: BJP leader PATNA, November 2 (PTI): In a scathing attack on Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, senior BJP leader and former minister Giriraj Singh on Saturday said like a “dehati aurat” (rural woman) he was quarrelling with Narendra Modi out of “jealousy”. “He is behaving like a dehati aurat (rural woman) and quarrelling with Narendra Modi out of jealousy,” Singh told reporters at Patna airport after Narendra Modi flew for Gaurichak to meet family of blast victim Rajnarain Singh. “It does not seems he is a chief min-
ister the way he is acting against Narendra Modi out of jealousy,” he said. “This reflects his small mindedness,” he said in a strong attack on Kumar. Shweta Menon alleges molestation, Congress MP denies charge
KoLLAm, November 2 (PTI): Congress MP N Peethambara Kurup, embroiled in controversy over alleged molestation of Malayalam cine actress Shweta Menon at a function here on Friday evening, on Saturday strongly denied having committed such an act. “It is totally untrue. I am telling this since my name has come up in a section of the media in connection with the incident,” 73-yearold Kurup, representing Kollam in the Lok Sabha, told the media here on Saturday. Shweta had complained, without naming her tormentor, that she was physically humilated at the venue of the President’s
Trophy boat race function here on Friday evening. Media footage showed Kurup touching her after which the MP issued the statement. The MP on Friday said it was extremely painful that his name had been dragged into the unfortunate incident and that he was confident of proving his innocence with the backing of strong proof. “For the time being it needs to be seen only as a politically motivated move when elections are approaching. It is painful that any kind of malicious attack could be unleashed against me just because I am a politician,” he said.
The incident sparked strong protests from the Malayalam film fraternity and women’s oufits who demanded strong action in the incident. Police are yet to register a case in connection with the incident, based either on the complaint the actress claimed to have orally made to the district collector or by taking note of media reports. Meanwhile, chief minister Oommen Chandy told reporters at Kottayam that he had not received any complaint from the actor so far on the incident. “If we get a complaint, after investigation appropriate action will be taken,” he said.
WAshINgToN, November 2 (IANs): It turns out that a White House mole fired recently for snarky anonymous tweets about top Obama administration officials and its policies was an Indian-American policy wonk. Jofi Joseph, 40, who served as a non-proliferation expert on the National Security Council, was a key aide of President Barack Obama, whose administration at over two dozen has more Indian-Americans in key jobs than any other previous US administration. Joseph, who was said to
be part of the team working on negotiations with Iran over its nuclear programme, was fired after it was discovered he was the author of the @natsecwonk Twitter feed known for its snarky blasts about the Obama administration. Under the cover of his alias, Joseph took aim over two years at high-ranking administration officials and Republicans alike, slamming their intellect and criticising their appearance. “I’m a fan of Obama, but his continuing reliance and dependence upon a vacuous cipher like Valerie Jar-
rett concerns me,” he once reportedly tweeted of the president’s senior adviser. Summing up his colleagues, he tweeted another time, “’Has shitty staff.’ #ObamaInThreeWords.” Again it was he who reportedly supplied some of the ammunition to Republicans for torpedoing the nomination of Susan Rice, Obama’s first choice to succeed Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, over her handling of Obama dministration’s response to the terrorist attack on the US consulate in Benghazi. Joseph did not spare
White House mole was an Indian-American Rice either when Obama appointed her National Security Adviser (NSA) a few months later. “What’s with the dominatrix-like black suit Susan Rice is wearing at this announcement?” he anonymously tweeted when Rice was formally introduced as the new NSA at the White House on June 5. Born in Germany where his parents, both Indians, were stationed in the early 1970s, he came to the US with his family when he was only six months old. Joseph graduated as the valedictorian of his Catholic
high school in Muskegon, Michigan, where the family lived. He attended Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, where he graduated in 1994. A Democrat, he worked on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee advising then-chairman Joseph Biden and later as the principal foreign policy adviser to Senator Robert P. Casey Jr. Jofi Joseph’s wife, Carolyn Leddy, is a Republican staffer on the Foreign Relations Committee. The Washington Post cited a former NSC official as saying “Joseph could be sar-
castic and bitter, especially in regard to colleagues who were given higher-level positions that he did not think they were qualified for.” Time correspondent Michael Crowley who knew Joseph -- fired “for his snarky and sometimes bilious tweets” -- wrote in a recent piece that “in person he was nothing like his obnoxious Twitter persona.” “Over lunch or coffee he was less interested in trashing colleagues than in diving deep on Iranian centrifuge capacity or deterrence theory in a postSoviet world,” he wrote.
“The district magistrate did not visit him at state guest house and also at airport, except for a deputy superintendent of police level officer no other senior civil or police officers were present to supervise security arrangements for Narendra Modi at the airport,” he said and alleged this was done to “please” Kumar. Narendra Modi, after reaching here around 11:15pm on Friday night, is putting up at state guest house, which is across the road to chief minister Nitish Kumar’s One Anne Marg residence.
residence after a thorough check. From Gaurichak, Modi was slated to families of victims in Kaimur, Gopalganj, Supual, Begusarai and Nalanda. Nalanda, the home district of chief minister Nitish Kumar, will be the final destination of Modi. From there he will fly in helicopter straight to Patna airport to return to Ahmedabad in his chartered plane, BJP sources said. Six persons were killed in multiple explosions on October 27 during “Hunkar rally” which was addressed by Modi, his first major political show in rival Nitish Kumar’s home turf after parting of ways of JD(U)
and BJP on June 16 last. The investigation in the blasts case has pointed to involvement of Indian Mujahideen militant outfit. Within a week, Narendra Modi has returned to Bihar to pay condolence to the six persons killed in the blasts on Sunday. The ruling JD(U) hit out at Modi, alleging that he was playing politics of polarisation and questioned why he had never visited the families of 2002 Gujarat riots. “This kind of behaviour does not behove a person who has been named as the prime ministerial candidate by the main opposition party. We are not saying he should not come to Bihar. But the time he has chosen is not right,” JD(U) leader Shivanand Tiwari said. His colleague K C Tyagi attacked Modi for travelling with a large security entourage from Gujarat, saying his actions were an insult to the prestige of Bihar. “It is naked aggression from one state against another. He is behaving like the cruel invaders from the medieval period. Till now we had only seen Centre’s interference in affairs of the states,” he said. Modi arrived in JP Airport Patna late on Friday night around 11:15pm from Pune. He was received at the airport by Sushil Modi, Nand Kishore Yadav, Shahnawaz Hussain, Ravishankar Prasad, Dharmendra Pradhan among others.
‘No decision yet on PM’s visit to Sri Lanka’ Finance Minister P. Chidambaram spoke to reporters after meeting DMK chief M. Karunanidhi at his residence P. Chidambaram
CheNNAI, November 2 (PTI): With political parties in Tamil Nadu stepping up pressure on Centre for boycott of Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) at Colombo this month, Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram met DMK chief M. Karunanidhi in Chennai on Saturday and said no decision has been taken as yet on Prime Minister’s visit to the meet. Speaking to reporters after meeting the DMK patriarch at his residence, he termed as “incorrect” media reports on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s likely participation in CHOGM. He stressed that the subject was still under discussion and a final decision was yet to be taken. “Media reports are incorrect. The subject is still under discussion. A final decision is yet to be taken. Individual Congress leaders have expressed their opinion,” he told reporters. The Finance Minister, however, did not disclose what transpired at the meet. DMK is among 11 major political parties in Tamil Nadu which have demanded that India boycott the CHOGM and register its strong protest over alleged war crimes against Tamils in Sri Lanka. The DMK patriarch had recently hardened his stand over the issue, saying “not even a speck of rust should be present at the
meet” and also cautioned former ally Congress it would have to “face the consequences” if the PM participates in it. Congress had aligned with DMK in Tamil Nadu for the last two Lok Sabha elections since 2004. Though DMK snapped its alliance with UPA on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue in March this year, it continues to maintain political ties with Congress which supported its candidate Kanimozhi in the Rajya Sabha polls. Tamil Nadu Assembly had also passed a unanimous resolution on October 24, demanding India seek temporary suspension of Sri Lanka from the Commonwealth body and insisting on a “complete” boycott of CHOGM by the Centre, respecting the “sentiments and opinion” of the state’s people. Mr. Chidambaram also condemned the alleged rape and murder of Sri Lankan woman media personality Isaipriya and demanded that the island nation’s government conduct a probe into the incident and punish those responsible. “I have seen the Isaipriya video. I believe it’s a real video. The Sri Lankan government should punish those responsible,” he said. He was replying to a query on a foreign TV channel’s recent clippings of the woman media personality, allegedly killed by Sri Lankan forces.

‘God’s Army’ twins reunite, seek comrAdes
SANGKHLABURI, NovemBeR 2 (AP): When they were kids, Johnny and Luther Htoo were bulletproof and invulnerable to land mines — or so went the story that briefly made them famous as hundreds of guerrillas followed and even worshipped them in the southeastern jungles of Myanmar. Today, well over a decade later, their “God’s Army” is no more, and the twins’ greatest accomplishment may be that both are still alive. Luther lives in Sweden. Johnny remains at an unofficial refugee camp inside Thailand, not far from where the brothers were sent after they surrendered to Thai authorities in 2001. Now 25, Johnny has hopes of reuniting with family in New Zealand, and Luther has questions about their former comrades that may never be answered. Members of their Karen ethnic group who have long sought autonomy in Myanmar have laid down their arms since a military dictatorship gave way to a nominally civilian government in 2011. Last month, during his first trip back to Thailand since leaving for Sweden in 2009, Luther said he would fight only if his people were hurt again.
“It’s not fun to fight anymore, now that I’m afraid to die. No one wants to fight unless they have to, you know,” Luther said. The legend of the twins began to form in 1997, when Myanmar troops entered their village during a sweep of Karen territory. At the time, the rebel Karen National Union was in sharp decline. “We had to defend ourselves because we didn’t like anyone to hurt us,” Luther recalled. “We love our motherland, so we chose to fight. We got seven rifles from the KNU and there were seven of us. We used them to fight against the Burmese army. We prayed before we fought, and then we won.” They dubbed themselves God’s Army. The boys were rambunctious, but strict discipline was maintained, as well as a rigorous Christian routine. There was no liquor in their village and a church service was held at least once a day. Journalists were amazed when they traveled to their small village of Ka Mar Pa Law, far from any towns or even paved roads. Video showed the twins living what looked like a kid’s pirate fantasy, shooting tropical fruit off the trees and being worshipped by adult
more fringe Myanmar antigovernment group. The so-called Vigorous Burmese Student Warriors seized the Myanmar Embassy in the Thai capital, Bangkok, in 1999. After a short siege, Thai officials arranged a getaway by helicopter for them to the Myanmar border area where God’s Army was based. Johnny and Luther took them in. But the student warriors were targets of two countries, Myanmar and Thailand, which lost
face from the embassy takeover despite resolving it peacefully. Reportedly, Thailand began shelling the twins’ village to help corner the embassy raiders. Shambles turned to disaster when the student warriors and some God’s Army members crossed back into Thailand and seized a provincial hospital in Ratchaburi in 2000. By Luther’s account, student warriors and some members of God’s Army went to the hospital to ask for medicine and doctors to help people wounded by the shelling. He did not explain why they went armed. In the end, no hostages at the hospital were hurt, but all 10 attackers were shot dead by Thai authorities — some after surrendering, according to witnesses. God’s Army quickly fell, and the boys surrendered at their village. They were treated well, but their comrades, who lacked the shield of international publicity, may not have been. “They were separated into groups of men, women and children. The Thai soldiers took 55 men with them and said they would be brought to work for the soldiers,” Luther told members of the Lawyers Council of Thailand as he sought their advice on tracking down the
men. “Since that day, no one ever saw them again.” Luther and Johnny stayed together at a refugee camp in Thailand, but later became separated. In 2006, Myanmar state television reported that Johnny and eight of his God’s Army comrades had turned themselves in because “they could not put up with the bullying of fellow rebels” and realized “the goodwill of the government.” Luther said the truth is that Johnny was lured back to Myanmar by false promises of work. A “surrender” was staged for TV, he said, with uniforms and a handover of weapons that didn’t belong to them. Now Luther is helping Johnny seek ways to stay with their mother and sister, who now live in New Zealand. “But I will have talk to a lot of people to make that happen,” Luther said. Their father lives in another Thai refugee camp. The AP interview marked the last time Luther and Johnny would see each other before Luther returned to Sweden. As the brothers parted, Johnny’s eyes appeared to well with tears. “C’mon, real men don’t cry,” Luther told his brother. He promised to return to see him next year.
pan, and said that this new cooperation would not interfere with the JapanU.S. alliance. Kishida also said that Japan’s alliance with Washington remains “the cornerstone” of Tokyo’s foreign and security policy. Earlier Friday, Japan and Russia agreed to continue discussing a territorial dispute that has kept the nations from signing a peace treaty. “We need to act constructively. We should not be emotional, and avoid provocative remarks,” Lavrov said in Friday’s news conference.
The diplomats also agreed to hold vice-ministerial talks in late January or February, ahead of Kishida’s planned visit to Russia in the spring. Lavrov did not mention an attack on Russian missiles in Latakia in Syria. Kishida said he and Lavrov planned to discuss Syria, Iran, Afghanistan and other international issues at Friday’s working dinner, which was closed to the media. Japan is seeking to broaden its defense ties, in addition to its key security alliance with the United States, in response to China’s growing military
presence and threats from North Korea. Russia has been expanding its trade ties in Asia and President Vladimir Putin has actively sought closer relations with Japan, partly as a counter to China’s rising military power. Lavrov, however, said that Russia would not commit to friendly relations with one party as a way to antagonize another. He was responding to a question about the significance of the new Japan-Russia defense cooperation to counter China’s growing marine presence.
It’s unclear how much progress is being made toward a resolution of a dispute over four islands that were seized by Soviet forces at the end of World War II. The dispute has kept the two nations from signing a peace treaty formally ending their World War II hostilities. Japan and Russia have also stepped up cooperation in developing energy resources, especially liquefied natural gas. Kishida said trade between the two countries totaled a record $33 billion last year, and that further growth is expected this year.
ma’s picture and his teachings are also smuggled into Tibet, at great personal risk. Writing in the ruling Communist Party’s influential journal Qiushi, the latest issue of which was received by subscribers on Saturday, Tibet’s party chief Chen Quanguo said that the government would ensure only its voice is heard. “Strike hard against the reactionary propaganda of the splittists from entering Tibet,” Chen wrote in the magazine, whose name means “seeking truth”. The government will achieve this by confiscat-
ing illegal satellite dishes, increasing monitoring of online content and making sure all telephone and internet users are registered using their real names, he added. “Work hard to ensure that the voice and image of the party is heard and seen over the vast expanses (of Tibet) ... and that the voice and image of the enemy forces and the Dalai clique are neither seen nor heard,” Chen wrote. China calls the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Dalai Lama a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” who seeks to use violent methods to estab-
lish an independent Tibet. The Dalai Lama, who fled to India after a failed uprising in 1959, says he simply wants genuine autonomy for Tibet, and denies espousing violence. Chen said the party would seek to expose the Dalai Lama’s “hypocrisy and deception” and his “reactionary plots”. China has long defended its iron-fisted rule in Tibet, saying the region suffered from dire poverty, brutal exploitation and economic stagnation until 1950, when Communist troops “peacefully liberated” Tibet. Tensions in China’s Tibetan regions are at their highest in years after a spate of self-immolation protests by Tibetans, which have led to an intensified security crackdown.
that oversees German intelligence. Stroebele met with Snowden for three hours on Thursday, a week after explosive allegations that the NSA had monitored Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cellphone prompted her to complain personally to President Barack Obama. The alleged spying has produced the most serious diplomatic tensions between the two allies since Germany opposed the U.S.led invasion of Iraq in 2003. In his one-page typed letter, written in English and bearing signatures that Stroebele said were his own and Snowden’s, the American complained that the U.S. government “continues to treat dissent as defection, and seeks to criminalize political speech with felony charges that provide no defense.” “However, speaking the truth is not a crime,” Snowden wrote. “I am confident that with the support
of the international community, the government of the United States will abandon this harmful behavior.” In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki would not respond directly to Snowden’s appeal, but said the U.S. position “has not changed.” “Despite recent reports or recent pronouncements from Mr. Snowden, as we’ve stated many times before, he’s accused of leaking classified information, faces felony charges here in the United States and we believe he should be returned as soon as possible, where he will be accorded full due process and protections applicable under U.S. law,” Psaki said. Snowden’s father, Lon Snowden, who recently visited his son in Russia and continues to communicate with him, told The Associated Press on Friday that Snowden will not travel to Germany to talk to authorities as long as the U.S.
charges remain in place. “If they want to understand my son’s position about Germany, read his letter. It’s pretty clear. He is not going to Germany to testify as long as he is indicted by the United States and their position is what it is,” the elder Snowden said, adding that his son would prefer to testify before Congress anyway. “My son would love to come back to the United States but I’m not sure it will be safe for him, even if all charges are dropped,” Lon Snowden said. “My advice would be to stay in Russia and move on with his life, and that’s what I believe he will do.” Stroebele said Edward Snowden appeared healthy and cheerful during their meeting at an undisclosed location in Moscow. The German television network ARD, which accompanied Stroebele, said the Germans were taken to the meeting by unidentified se-
followers who carried them around on their shoulders. Probably the most famous image of the twins was shot by Associated Press photographer Apichart Weerawong when they were 12. The tightly cropped portrait shows Luther with shaved forelocks and raised brows, insouciantly puffing on a hand-rolled cigarette. Johnny, with neatly parted and combed long hair, softly feminine face and a sad, soulful gaze, stands behind his brother’s right shoulder. A joint interview with the AP last month highlighted the very different lives the Htoo brothers have led since then. Luther appeared almost chic in a traditional Karen blouse over jeans, one silver hoop earring on his left ear and two on his right. Johnny wore an old button-down shirt several sizes too big, an evident charity hand-me-down. He looked weary and nervous. Luther now lives in Götene, a town 335 kilometers (208 miles) west of Stockholm, where he says he studied economics, history and other liberal arts subjects and has worked several jobs, including caregiver for the elderly. While in Sweden, he married a Karen woman from another tribe and had a
child with her, but they later got divorced, the child staying with the mother. “I like Sweden but it’s very cold. Cold and snow, but I like it there because the country is peaceful,” Luther said. “There’s no one shooting at each other and no one hurting each other.” Johnny eventually settled down to work as a rice farmer but returned less than a year ago to the refugee camp in Thailand where he had stayed with Luther. He was shy during
the interview and inclined to defer to his brother. Before departing Thailand last month, Luther tried to learn more about what happened to dozens of his comrades who disappeared after surrendering. “Their wives and children have been waiting,” he said. “It’s been 13 years. I think all of them are dead.” They may have been victims of a calamitous turn in God’s Army’s fortunes that came after it became enmeshed with an even
ToKYo, NovemBeR 2 (AP): Japan and Russia held their first high-level defense and diplomatic talks Saturday and agreed to step up cooperation between their militaries amid regional security concerns such as North Korea and China. Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera, and their Russian counterparts Sergei Lavrov and Sergei Shoigu also agreed to hold joint military and anti-piracy exercises and establish a defense consultation frame-

BeIJING, NovemBeR 2 (ReUTeRS): China aims to stamp out the voice of exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama in his restive and remote homeland by ensuring that his “propaganda” is not received by anyone on the internet, television or other means, a top official said. China has tried, with varying degrees of success, to prevent Tibetans listening to or watching programmes broadcast from outside the country, or accessing any information about the Dalai Lama and the exiled government on the internet. But many Tibetans are still able to access such news, either via illegal satellite televisions or by skirting Chinese internet restrictions. The Dalai La-
BeRLIN, NovemBeR 2 (AP): The U.S. refused to show any leniency to fugitive leaker Edward Snowden on Friday, even as Secretary of State John Kerry conceded that eavesdropping on allies had happened on “automatic pilot” and went too far. Snowden made his appeal for U.S. clemency in a letter released Friday by a German lawmaker who met with him in Moscow. In it, the 30-year-old American asked for international help to persuade the U.S. to drop spying charges against him and said he would like to testify before the U.S. Congress about the National Security Agency’s surveillance activities. Snowden also indicated he would be willing to help German officials investigate alleged U.S. spying in Germany, said Hans-Christian Stroebele, a lawmaker with the opposition Green Party and a member of the parliamentary committee

Japan, Russia agree to expand defense ties Horn of Africa pirates took up to $413 mn since 2005: Study
WASHINGToN, NovemBeR 2 (AFP): Horn of Africa pirates have raked in up to $413 million in ransom since 2005, with most of it used to finance “global scale” criminal operations, a new study said on Friday. The study said the pirates themselves get little of the money paid them by international ship and cargo owners, with their financiers getting most of the take. The money then is spun into criminal operations including arms trafficking, migrant smuggling, and to fund militias, as well as into legitimate businesses, according to the joint study by the World Bank, United Nations and Interpol. The study, “Pirate Trails,” points to the need to go after the money itself, as it is laundered and used in other areas, and not just the pirates. “The international community has mobilized a naval force to deal with the pirates,” said Stuart Yikona, a World Bank financial sector expert and co-author of the report. “A similarly managed multinational effort is needed to disrupt and halt the flow of illicit money that circulates in the wake of their activities.” The study paints a picture of an increasingly sophisticated industry operating mainly from Somalia. It is based on interviews with government officials, bankers, local businesses and former pirates. It says that pirates, hijacking vessels from small sailboats to oil supertankers off the busy coast of East Africa, have been able to ransom off their captives for between $339 million and $413 million between 2005 and 2012. From 30 percent to 75 percent of the money ends up in the hands of “financiers,” with only a small amount going to the pirates themselves. Most of the money stays in the region, with a substantial amount laundered through the trade in khat, a popular narcotic leaf in the East African region. The study says
there is evidence that pirate financiers have used their gains to establish their own stakes in the khat trade. In addition, they buy heavily into real estate, and could be getting into oil trade, transportation, restaurants and hotels. But it cited a greater concern over pirate financiers “investing in militias and military capabilities” in Somalia, running human trafficking operations, and other criminal activities. “The fact that proceeds from piracy are being used to perpetuate other criminal activities is concerning for the development and stability of the region as a whole, and deserves increased attention from local and international stakeholders,” it said. The study paints a picture of a piracy economy in impoverished coastal Somalia that has brought benefits, but also sharply pushed up living costs, due to the flood of ransom cash. Pirates end up paying more for many crucial goods; khat costs three times the price in nonpirate towns. Three key pirate networks dominate the industry, in operations more complex, and formal enough to now involve operating contracts, with lawyers acting as go-betweens to conclude deals between the key parties in the piracy event. Businessmen involved on the pirates’ side also clean up by selling goods at hugely inflated prices to the pirates themselves. “All pirates accept the situation and realize this is the cost and social norm of doing business,” it said. Aside from higher prices, the study argued though that Somalia has paid the price in terms of lower security, less willingness by outsiders to travel there, and regional instability. Fishing has declined in the region, with a sharp 28.5 percent fall since 2006 of fish product exports from piracyaffected East African countries.

Snowden seeks the world’s help against US charges curity officials under “strict secrecy.” Snowden “said that he would like most to lay the facts on the table before a committee of the U.S. Congress and explain them,” Stroebele said. The lawmaker, a prominent critic of the NSA’s alleged activities, said Snowden “did not present himself to me as anti-American or anything like that — quite the contrary.” Merkel this week sent German officials to Washington for talks on the spying issue. Germany’s parliament also is expected to discuss the NSA’s alleged spying on Nov. 18. Snowden’s appeal came as Kerry conceded that because of modern technology, some NSA activities had gone too far and were carried out without the knowledge of Obama administration officials. “The president and I have learned of some things that have been happening, in many ways on an auto-
matic pilot, because the technology is there,” Kerry said Thursday, speaking in a video link to an open government conference in London. “In some cases, some of these actions have reached too far and we are going to try to make sure it doesn’t happen in the future,” Kerry said, adding that ongoing reviews of U.S. surveillance will ensure that technology is not being abused. Snowden was granted a one-year asylum in Russia in August after being stuck at a Moscow airport for more than a month following his arrival from Hong Kong. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Snowden got asylum on condition that he wouldn’t harm U.S. interests. Snowden’s exact whereabouts in Russia and his activities there have been a mystery, though there has been wide speculation that he is under the control of Russia’s security services.

Spurs hold off Lakers for victory Webber beats Vettel
Los AngeLes, no vember 2 (AP): Although the Spurs and the Lakers hadn't played a game without Tim Duncan or Kobe Bryant on the court in 17 years, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili haven't gone anywhere. And even without Duncan, San Antonio is still doing the same boring stuff with the same stellar results. Parker had 24 points and six assists, Kawhi Leonard added 15 points and 11 rebounds, and the Spurs survived without Duncan for a 91-85 victory over Los Angeles on Friday night. Duncan sat out after bruising his chest in Wednesday's seasonopening victory over Memphis, but Spurs coach Gregg Popovich promised his defending Western Conference champions would do the "same boring stuff " even without their franchise cornerstone since 1997. That's exactly what the Spurs did, recovering from an early 15-point deficit and executing well in the final minutes while the newlook Lakers faltered against the club that swept them out of the first round of last spring's playoffs. "We had a rough start, but in the second half we played a lot better," said Parker, who went 12 for 18 and made just one turnover in nearly 36 minutes of play. "Every road win is sweet, so we'll take it." Parker hit the tiebreaking jumper with 2:13 to play, and Ginobili capped his 20-point performance

ferent. We just ran what we always run, whether (Duncan) is there or not. If Tony was out or Manu was out, we run our same stuff." Pau Gasol had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Lakers, who finished their season-opening string of three games in four days with two losses after their season-opening win over the Clippers. After San Antonio erased their early deficit, the teams traded 14 lead changes in a tense fourth quarter. Parker put the Spurs ahead to stay, and Tiago Splitter made an impressive tip-in with 1:10 left to cap a 9-1 Spurs run. "There was a lot better execution on their part," Gasol said. "They made a couple of big shots, and we didn't counter. Diaw played very well down the stretch." Kobe Bryant sat out for the Lakers, and is still weeks away from a return after tearing his Achilles tendon in April. The Lakers and Spurs played the first game between the perennial Western Conference powers without either Duncan or Bryant on the court since November 1996, when Bryant was a rookie and Duncan was at Wake Forest. Jodie Meeks scored 14 points and Wes Johnson added 12 for the Lakers. Steve Nash had five points on 1-for-8 shooting and five assists in his return after sitting out Wednesday's game at Golden State in a bid to rest the 39-year-old point guard during back-tobacks.
to abu Dhabi pole AbU DHAbI, november 2 (AgenCIes): Mark Webber beat Red Bull team-mate and new world champion Sebastian Vettel to pole position at the Abu Dhabi GP. Webber, who has struggled to beat Vettel at the Yas Marina track, was 0.1 seconds quicker than the German. Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg was third as team-mate Lewis Hamilton spun on his final lap and took fourth. Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, battling to keep second in the championship, was 11th, out of the top 10 for the first time this year. The Spaniard was beaten by team-mate Felipe Massa for the fifth time in six races and the eighth occasion in 17 grands prix this season. The Brazilian was eighth quickest in the top 10 shoot-out, behind Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen in fifth, Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg and Lotus's Romain Grosjean. McLaren's Sergio Perez and Toro Rosso's Daniel Ricciardo completed the top 10, while Force India's Paul Di Resta was 12th, just behind Alonso. Ferrari have been struggling with a lack of traction but Alonso was 0.104secs adrift of Massa in second qualifying, doing little to quieten questions about his form in qualifying in the second half of this season. His erstwhile title rival Vettel will be just as disappointed with second place. The 26-year-old was fastest after the first laps in

the top 10 shoot-out but after Webber pipped him on the Australian's final run, Vettel failed to improve. Vettel flicked his head in frustration several times as he crossed the line after completing his final lap. Webber said: "This weekend has gone pretty smoothly. Not the smoothest path to the start of Q2 or Q1, we were not electric. We changed the car quite a bit and I got more and more comfortable as the session went on. It made me more comfortable in the final sector, where Seb has been quick, so I was able to match him there and keep where I had been quick already." Vettel said he made a
mistake in Turn One. "I was pushing hard, that's the reason behind it," he said. "You can always say there is a bit here and there, but if you push to the maximum and try to get everything out you can do mistakes. "I'm not very proud of that. But I did what I could and it wasn't enough to be on pole. Mark deserves to be on pole." Red Bull were in a league of their own, half a second clear of Rosberg, but Hamilton lost any chance of a front-row start when he got on to the kerb on the exit of Turn 13 and then spun at Turn 14 on his final lap. Hamilton said over the radio that he felt something had broken on the car.

bArCeLonA, november 2 (AP): Alexis Sanchez scored a second-half goal as Barcelona and Lionel Messi struggled past Espanyol 1-0 Friday to remain top of the Spanish league. Neymar drew two defenders before guiding a pass through both pairs of legs across goal for Sanchez to tap in at the far post for the easy 68th-minute winner. Barcelona opened up a four-point advantage over Atletico Madrid, which plays Athletic Bilbao on Sunday, and a nine-point lead on Real Madrid. Madrid faces Rayo Vallecano on Saturday. Messi is coming off one of his worst months of football, having not scored in the league since September. The Argentina international, who has been troubled by an injury, lacked rhythm and made uncharacteristic turnovers at the Camp Nou Stadium to start November goalless. Coach Gerardo Martino showed no concern over Messi's fit-
ness. "If we keep winning, little by little the best version of each football player will emerge," Martino said. "I don't think Messi is worried, nor do I think he's looking ahead to the World Cup." The last time Messi went three straight league games without scoring was in April-May of 2011. "What's happening is that he places the bar so high that when he doesn't score there appears to be a problem," Martino said. "But I don't see any problems." Barcelona next plays against AC Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday. Messi, the four-time world player of the year, did score at Milan nearly two weeks ago. Although Barcelona labored to another victory, it maintained its impressive start under Martino, who has led the team to 34 of a possible 36 points. Messi missed time with a right leg injury and by the end of the match he looked like he was either frustrated or
feeling the effects of not being 100 percent fit. Barcelona dominated possession and controlled the tempo from the start, with Espanyol goalkeeper Francisco Casilla diving to make a save from Sanchez early on, with the Chilean enjoying some of the hosts' best opportunities throughout. Espanyol needed over half an hour to register its first shot on goal, and it was nearly ahead in the 36th but Victor Valdes got a leg to Victor Sanchez's low shot following a smart run onto Thievy Bifouma's clever touch. Andres Iniesta forced a save from Casilla with Dani Alves hitting the post in the ensuing scramble as Barcelona nearly went ahead just before halftime. Casilla was in top form as he got a hand to Messi's well-guided header in the 54th. Messi then had two opportunities from free kicks but never came closer to scoring his first league goal since Sept. 28.

Riled Raikkonen angry with Lotus over lack of pay
AbU DHAbI, november 2 (AP): In a rare outburst, Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen on Friday criticized the team for not paying his salary this season and threatened to skip the final two races of the season in protest. Speaking after the second practice session of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the former F1 champion said he had to be persuaded to race here and added that he is still upset about a tense exchange with a member of the technical staff at last weekend's Indian GP. "Sometimes it is not very nice when you hear that you are not really a team player, and you don't have the interests of the team (at heart) — but you have been paid zero euro(s) the whole year," said Raikkonen, who is usually reluctant to speak to media. Raikkonen, who is joining Ferrari next season, added that he would consider skipping the United States GP and Brazilian GP if he does not receive his money. "For sure. I enjoy racing, I enjoy driving, but a big part of it is business. Sometimes when that is not dealt with like it should we end up in an unfortunate situation," he said.
"You have to put the line somewhere, and if it goes over that ... it is not really my fault." Raikkonen's comments came just hours after Lotus chairman Gerard Lopez has played down the rift between Raikkonen and trackside operations director Alan Permane last Sunday. In blunt terms, Raikkonen was told over the race radio by Permane not to hold up teammate Romain Grosjean. Raikkonen skipped media duties on Thursday, which fueled speculation about growing unrest, and the 34-year-old Finnish driver confirmed that he came close not to racing in Abu Dhabi. "I came here only because hopefully we found an understanding on the certain issues we have been having," Raikkonen said. "Hopefully it will be fixed and we can finish the season as well as we can." Although the argument with Permane was not the main factor in his decision to speak out, Raikkonen said it did upset him. "It is a part of it. It is true those things should not happen but they have happened," Raikkonen said. "(But) that is not really the issue. It is all the other stuff." The 2007
champion is also annoyed that his loyalty to the team has been questioned despite him racing without pay. "It doesn't put you in the best place," he said. "That is how it goes and hopefully, like I said, we found an understanding on both sides on how we should deal with the situation right now." Only hours earlier, Lopez insisted all was fine. "Recently a lot was made about the comments between Alan Permane and Kimi during the course of a tense moment in a race, but this was just one exchange taking a matter of seconds in the course of a two-year relationship," Lopez said Friday. "It certainly wasn't the most beneficial few seconds, but you have to step back and accept that everyone is passionate about racing and sometimes these things do happen." Lopez did acknowledge, however, that the financial situation was poorly handled. "For a long time we had the opportunity to keep him in our hands, but we weren't able to operate to the timeframe — or make the offer — that Ferrari were able to do," Lopez said. "For me this brought
sadness, as it's like a prodigal son leaving us." Lopez also praised the influence that Raikkonen has had on Grosjean — the Frenchman who has hit form late into the season with three consecutive third-place finishes. "Had Romain been next to a more junior driver, or a less capable driver, we probably would still not know how good Romain is," Lopez said. "For Romain to be delivering the results he is doing so now, it's really very much because he is driving next to probably one of the best Formula One drivers ever. Kimi has been a tremendous help." Lotus still has an outside shot at finishing second behind Red Bull in the constructors' championship. Mercedes, with 313 points, and Ferrari, with 309, are in a stronger position while Lotus stands at 285. "The only reason we're fighting for second is because of all the points that Kimi has scored," Lopez said. Raikkonen is third overall behind Fernando Alonso and recently-crowned world champion Sebastian Vettel.

12 Years a Slave prompts calls for racial reconciliation T
he new movie 12 Years a Slave may depict a bygone era in American history, but religious leaders hope it might spark increased attention about present-day race relations. “It is the elephant in the room,” said the Rev. Barbara Williams-Skinner, a facilitator of the National African American Clergy Network, speaking at a panel discussion after a recent screening. “If you even raise race today, you are ‘race b a i t i n g .’ You’re playing ‘the race card,’” said Williams-Skinner, who is also the CEO of the Skinner Leadership Institute. The movie gives an unflinching account of the true story of Solomon Northup, a free man living in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., who was kidnapped and spent a dozen years as a slave in the South, wrongly accused of being a Georgia runaway. Clergy and activists hope the movie that opens Friday (Oct. 18) — with its depiction of whippings and other degradation — will be a catalyst for churches to recall slavery and address the current state of the nation’s race relations. Sojourners, the Washington-based anti-poverty group, will be circulating “The One Church One Body Pledge” in hopes of starting a new conversation to improve race relations. “Many white Christians and churches have no connection to what is being felt and said in black churches nationwide — both about fear for their children and fear of losing their voting rights,” the pledge reads. It urges supporters to seek racial reconciliation and help the church become “a multiracial community.” It calls on them to “repair our criminal justice system” and urge Congress to “restore the integrity of the Voting Rights Act.” Sojourners’ founder, Jim Wallis, tied the stories of families separated in 12 Years a Slave to often-forgotten African-American children who attend inadequate schools or live on streets where hundreds are shot each year. “It’s still going on every damn day,” he said. The Rev. Michael McBride, a Berkeley, Calif.-based advocate on mass incarceration with PICO National Network, said he hopes the movie will encourage people to view the punitive aspects of U.S. society as excessive and not “grounded in Scripture.” The film sometimes addresses questions of faith, including a slave master quoting from the Bible at an outdoor worship service, legitimizing his authority to control and whip the slaves gathered before him. “The faith that they had in the film was really capitalism in drag,” said the Rev. Otis Moss III, pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, speaking of the slave owners depicted in the movie. Galen Carey, vice president of the National Association of Evangelicals, said there’s no “one step” that will move the church on race relations. But “authentic encounters” in local churches can help. A small group at his Columbia, Md., church discovered a sharp racial disparity among its members over whether they’d listed themselves as organ donors on their driver’s licenses. Black members recalled notorious medical experiments on unsuspecting black men in the mid-1900s. “Every single African-American in our group said, ‘No way would I do that ’cause we can’t trust those people,’” Carey said. “And every white person said, ‘What do you mean?’”

Yoko Ono is ‘thankful’ for McCartney’s comments

oko Ono says she’s thankful Paul McCartney appears to have gotten over his grudge against her. McCartney, in a recent Rolling Stone interview, said he’s getting along fine with the widow of John Lennon, his old songwriting partner. The bad feelings had gone back decades, to when the Beatles were falling apart and other group members resented the appearance of Lennon’s new girlfriend in the recording studio. McCartney said that time was a great healer and thought that “if John loved her, there’s got to be something. He’s not stupid.” He said once he decided to let go of his grudge that they’ve been getting along fine. Ono, in an interview with The Associated Press, said Wednesday it was good to hear those words from McCartney and “I’m very thankful.” “I never felt too bad about Paul,” she said. “He was my husband’s partner and they did a great job and all that. They seemed to have a lot of fun, and I respected that.” Some of the bad feelings had persisted in the postBeatles years, as Ono was a regular partner in business affairs surrounding the group after Lennon’s death in 1980 — perhaps most notably when McCartney expressed a desire to change songwriting credits to “McCartney-Lennon” instead of “Lennon-McCartney” for some of the songs most associated with him. McCartney told Rolling Stone he admires Ono’s work. She’s still making and releasing new music at age 80, like McCartney is at age 71. Said McCartney: “She’s badass.” “Well, he’s a rocker,” Ono said.

ction man Arnold Schwarzenegger has been named an honorary ranger by officials at the U.S. Forest Service. The actor, who served as California governor from 2003 to 2011, has been recognised for his continued efforts to combat climate change. A statement from agency bosses reads, Thanks to Governor Schwarzenegger, California is now well on its way to meeting its targets through a ground-breaking mix of measures, including a low carbon fuel standard, a renewable energy portfolio, and a cap-and-trade program. Governor Schwarzenegger also approved tough new vehicle fuel economy standards that have since been adopted at the national level. The Terminator star, who co-founded the non-profit R20 Regions of Climate Change organisation, joins Betty White and Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell as the only other honorary rangers in the agency’s history, according to the Huffington Post.

ShaRma'S HQ IGAR (N) edge out DDSA double ton helpS IndIa CRuSh auStRalIa 22nd Royal Gold Cup
Players of HQ IGAR ( (N) (blue) and DDSA (white) in action.
Kohima, November 2 (mexN): HQ IGAR (N) made amends for their dismal penalty shootout performance against Nagaland Police in the quarter-finals of the recently concluded NSF Martyrs trophy as they edged out DDSA represented by NPL franchise club Dimapur United FC, 7-6 via tiebreak after both the teams failed to find the net after 90 minutes of regulation time in the opening match of the 22nd Royal Gold Cup played at Khuociezie Local ground Kohima, today. The day belonged to IGAR custodian Bhechung Bhutia who displayed tremendous agility and reflex; save for a goalkeeping error in the First half which nearly gave DDSA the lead, to deny the Dimapur outfit forwards inspite of brilliant attempts on goal by the visitors. Bhechung came up with two wonderful saves in each half of the game. The first one in the 2nd minute of the game after he parried Ajanpou’s strike from 5 yards and a second one in injury time of the Second half when he pushed United’s Nigerian recruit Faniyan’s volley from close range. IGAR had their moments of brilliance too with Rishi Kanta displaying great footwork and combining brilliantly with Lipok and A.I Singh. Their defence too had a great out-
ing as they combined brilliantly to deny much space to the Dimapur trio of Amir Lama, Ajanpou and Nigerian Patrick Arol who was replaced midway in the second half by Moi. The Dimapur outfit had a luckless day after Ajanpou’s volley was parried by the keeper and attempts by Patrick and Faniyan hit the woodwork in the first 15 minutes of the game. DDSA forward Amir Lama had a forgettable outing as he failed to find the net in as many as five occasions and failed to convert the vital spot kick after regulation time handing IGAR the win. DDSA certainly looked the better team in terms of ball possession having had more attempts on goal than their opponents, only to be denied by IGAR custodian Bhechung Bhutia in the end. Chief Guest for the occasion Khriehu Liezietsu, Advisor New & Renewable Energy & Chairman MTF, DPDB Kohima delving on the exploits of legendary Naga Footballer Late T. Ao, spoke of the beautiful game and encouraged the football players in the State on the need to discipline and train themselves so as to achieve greater laurels in the game. The Second Match of the Cup will witness NPL franchise club Kohima Komets playing against 164 INF Battalion (TA) on Monday at 1:30 pm.

MOSt SIxeS IN AN ODI INNINGS
NeW deLhi, November 2 (TNN): Riding on Rohit Sharma's record-breaking 209, India registered their first bilateral ODI series win at home against Australia as they crushed the visitors by 57 runs in the seventh one-day international on Saturday. Rohit's heroics helped India post a massive 383/6 against Australia in the series decider at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. James Faulkner (116), Glenn Maxwell (60) and Shane Watson (49) kept the visitors hope alive with some power-hitting but they came short of the huge target. Australia were bundled out for 326 in 45.1 overs. Faulkner in the process broke the Mathew Hayden's record of 66-ball century as he raced to his maiden ton off just 57 balls. Spinners Ravichandran Ashwin (2-51), Ravindra Jadeja (373) and pacer Mohammed Shami (3-52) were the pick of the Indian bowlers as they shared eight Australian wickets among them. Pacer Vinay Kumar provided India an important breakthrough when he dismissed dangerous Glenn Maxwell (60) in the 23rd over to reduce the visitors to 138/6 in 22.2 overs. Maxwell was in his aggressive best as he smashed seven sixes and three fours in his whirlwind 22-ball
knock. In the process, Maxwell equaled the record of fastest fifty by an Australian in 18 balls. Maxwell also added valuable 58 runs for the fifth wicket with Adam Voges. Voges (4) became the second victim of pacer Mohd Shami, who clean bowled the batsman in the 22nd over. Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin clean bowled Brad Haddin (40) to reduce Australia to 74/4 in 16.5 overs. Haddin, who hit seven fours, was leading the visitors' fightback before he missed the Ashwin delivery. But the biggest blow for Aussies came in the previous over (16th) when they lost their big hitting in-form skipper George Bailey (4). Bailey was run out after a mixed-up with Haddin. Australia lost Phillip Hughes (23) and Aaron Finch (5) early against India. Ashwin dismissed Hughes in the thirteenth over to reduce Australia to 64/2 in 12.1 overs, after the southpaw added 57 runs with Haddin to lead the visitors' fightback. Pacer Mohd Shami gave the hosts early breakthrough, when he got rid of Finch in the second over. Earlier, Rohit Sharma blasted his way into the record books with a breathtaking 209 that included a record 16 sixes which propelled India to a mammoth 383 for six. The immensely talented Sharma

thus became only third batsman in the history of ODI cricket after Virender Sehwag (219) and Sachin Tendulkar (200 n.o.) to reach the coveted double ton. Enroute his 158-ball-209, Rohit created a world record by hitting as many as 16 sixes along with 12 fours. His 16 sixes bettered Shane Watson's effort of 15 sixes against Bangladesh in an ODI match. This was also the highest individual ODI score by any batsman against Australia in ODIs as well as being India's highest team total against the visitors. The last five overs produced an unbelievable 101 runs. While Rohit scored his first 100 off 114 balls, the next hundred came off only 42 deliveries. All the sixes were clean straight hits in the arc between deep extra-cover and deep mid-wicket. There was minimum muscle and maximum timing in each and every six that he hit. Put into bat by the Australian skipper George Bailey, the home team rode on Rohit's brilliant batting display which was complemented by his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan (60) and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni who batted in his customary style smacking a 38-ball-62 with seven fours and two sixes. Rohit and Dhoni added a staggering 167 runs for the fifth wick-
et in only 15.4 overs at an average of 10.65 while the opening partnership again proved to be productive yielding 112 runs. The men who missed out included Virat Kohli (0) and the two horribly out-of-form players Yuvraj Singh (12) and Suresh Raina (28). While another in-form batsman Kohli was run-out for duck without scoring and looked angry, the Delhi star was the most vocal in his applause when Rohit reached his individual milestones. Having got a second wind after being promoted as an opener, Rohit also completed 1000 runs in ODIs this year at a very impressive average of 50 plus. This is Rohit's third big score in the current apart from his match-winning 141 at Jaipur and 79 in the last game at Nagpur. With the current ODI rules of having five fielders inside the circle at any point of time has proved to be a draconian one for the bowlers who have been taken to the cleaners. All the frontline Australian bowlers got a hammering with Clint McKay (1-89 in 10 overs) ending up with worst figures. Nathan Coultier-Nile (0-80 in 10 overs), James Faulkner (1-75 in 10 overs) and Xavier Doherty (274 in 10 overs) were smoked to all parts of the ground by Rohit and Dhoni. Rohit ultimately fell
newcastle beat Chelsea 2-0 at St James' park
C M Y K
LoNdoN, November 2 (ageNcies): Newcastle United produced an impressive second-half performance to beat Chelsea 2-0 at St James' Park to record a first home Premier League win in two months. Jose Mourinho's side headed to the north east on the back of a nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions, but were undone by goals from Yoan Gouffran and Loic Remy. Chelsea had made the brighter start to the game and struck the crossbar twice in the 13th minute through captain John Terry and fellow defender Branislav Ivanovic following a Juan Mata corner. Terry saw another header cleared off the line by Davide Santon, while Newcastle could only muster shots from Yohan Cabaye and Moussa Sissoko which drew comfortable saves from Petr Cech. But Newcastle were much improved after halftime and, after Cech had saved from Sissoko and Gouffran, the hosts took the lead on 68 minutes. Cabaye curled in a brilliant free-kick from deep and Gouffran had been left unmarked to head beyond an exposed Cech. The visitors came close to equalising 10 minutes from

time when Willian's shot was pushed out by Tim Krul and fellow substitute Samuel Eto'o's follow-up was blocked by Mathieu Debuchy. Newcastle then wrapped up the points a minute from time when Vurnon Anita's low pass teed up Remy to flash a leftfooted shot in off the post to
leave Mourinho still waiting for his first Premier League win at St James' Park. On a miserably cold and wet Tyneside afternoon, the fare on offer initially did little to lift the mood as an attritional game unfolded. Chelsea started confidently and pinned their hosts back for long periods
with Eden Hazard leading the home defence a merry dance. The inability of Alan Pardew's men to retain possession for anything other than a few seconds left them constantly under pressure with Hazard and Oscar capitalising on their profligacy. They had to ride their luck at times with the
crossbar coming to Krul's rescue twice within seconds in the 13th minute, when Terry climbed highest to head Mata's corner against the woodwork before Ivanovic's deflected follow-up was repelled in similar fashion. But, for all their pressure, the visitors were unable to test Krul
to Mckay when he was caught by substitute Moises Henriques, who had come in to field for Shane Watson who suffered from an hamstring injury. Rohit-Dhawan brought up the third century opening stand for India in this series after he rocked back and cut Glenn Maxwell to deep extra cover fence. This was also their sixth century stand this year and became the only pair to do so in a calendar year. They were also involved in match-winning 176 and 178 runs opening partnership in Jaipur and Nagpur onedayers, respectively. Dhawan was lucky to have survived on 41 when Watson missed a run-out chance at backward point after he threw the ball wide, giving ample time for the Delhi lad to get back into the crease. Doherty did the damage for the visitors, scalping two important wickets of Dhawan and Suresh Raina, and pegged India back to some extent after the roaring start given by the openers. Kohli, who needed 81 runs to beat Vivian Richards' record of being the fastest batsman to reach 5000-run mark in one-dayers, was unfortunately run out. Raina and Yuvaraj fell to Doherty and James Faulkner in quick succession but Rohit and Dhoni more than made up for their failures.
further and, as they gradually found their feet, the Magpies began to compete. And, as they grew in confidence, both Cabaye and Sissoko tested Cech after more enterprising build-up play. Newcastle resumed on the front foot after half-time and attempted to attack Chelsea, although their wastefulness in possession continued to court disaster. But it was the Magpies who went close to the opening goal twice within seconds when Cech made a fine save from Sissoko's skidding 60th-minute effort after he had been played in by Debuchy and Remy volleyed straight at the keeper from Ameobi's knock-down. Buoyed by the growing momentum, Pardew sent on Papiss Cisse for Ameobi as Willian and Eto'o replaced Oscar and Fernando Torres, but it was Gouffran who tested Cech at the foot of his near post after cutting inside Ivanovic with 25 minutes remaining. But the Frenchman was not to be denied and he got his reward three minutes later in spectacular style. Cabaye's curling free-kick caused all kinds of problems for the Chelsea defence and Gouffran read it perfectly to dive and power a header past Cech.
