Kidnapped trader rescued in Nagaland JORHAT, OcTObeR 5 (TNN): Police rescued a kidnapped Haryana-based businessman from Mon district on Friday morning. Police said some Naga militants had kidnapped the businessman from the Namtola area of Sivasagar district on Wednesday for ransom. Rakesh Sharma was abducted by a group of suspected Naga militants around 4.30 pm on Wednesday, when he was on his way home in the Sonari area of Sivasagar district. Police found his two-wheeler from the Lahdoigarh near the border on Thursday. Sivasagar SP Bijoy Giri Kuligum said, “A joint team of Assam and Nagaland police launched an operation at Yangpang Basti this morning and rescued the trader. When the goons came to know about our operation, they fled the scene, leaving the abducted man behind,” he said. Though the miscreants have not been identified, it has been confirmed that they kidnapped Sharma for ransom. However, they were unable to contact his family members, who live in Haryana. Sharma has more than nine small tea gardens in the Assam-Nagaland border area. He also deals in green tea leaves, which he collects from local small tea growers in Assam and Nagaland. However, he did not get any extortion note from any militant outfit before he was kidnapped.
Don’t be too spiritual: Pope

ROme, OcTObeR 5 (IANS/AKI): Pope Francis berated the nuns whose fixed smiles betray “a lack of joy that comes from within”. “I am so disappointed when I meet nuns who are joyless, who may smile with the smile of a flight attendant but not with the smile of joy that comes from within,” the pontiff told nuns at the Santa Chiara cloistered convent in the Italian city of Assisi. Living in an enclosed order must not be “purgatory”, Francis told the nuns. “Nuns must not be too spiritual, and must endeavour to be experts in humanity in order that convent life is not purgatory,” he said. He urged the nuns to embrace communal living and to live together like members of a happy, loving family. “Know how to forgive, how to tolerate each other because the devil takes every opportunity to divide us. Nurture friendships with each other and family life. And don’t brag!” he told the nuns.

Dishonoring earlier agreements could become a barrier to peace
KOHImA, OcTObeR 5 (mexN): The Nagaland State government today reminded the Centre that dishonouring earlier agreements could become a barrier towards finding permanent peace in the State. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, speaking on the sidelines of the meeting with the 14th Finance Commission (FC), said at a press conference that not honouring political agreements could upset the ongoing Naga peace process. This, he said, is especially true if the Union Government does not espouse agreements like the 16 Point Agreement of 1960 which gave birth to Nagaland State. Rio stated that the Centre has not fulfilled Clause 11 of the 16 Point Agreement which states the special financial assistance to be given to the State. The Chief Minister said that the Centre had unilaterally either abrogated the clauses of the agreement or had not
implemented some till date. The Centre has also not implemented integration of contiguous Naga areas which is mentioned in the Agreement. “If the Government of India cannot honour agreements, how will people come for another agreement?” Rio asked. On Article 371(A) of the Constitution of India, he asked the Centre neither to ignore the constitution nor agreements signed with the people. He expressed hope that the members of the 14th FC have understood the historical background and recognition of uniqueness of Naga history by the Union Government. Furthermore, the Chief Minister suggested that since law and order has considerably improved and insurgency has subsided, the Centre should focus less on spending money on military and para-military, and more on infrastructure development and job opportunities for the educated unemployed youth of the State.
nancial problems faced for covering salary/pensions, infrastructure development including staffs quarters, road sector, capacity building, gainful job opportunities for the youth, lack of basic infrastructure like airport, medical, engineering, technical colleges. sonia asks Pallam to ‘not act in haste’
NeW DelHI, OcTObeR 5 (pTI): M M Pallam Raju, who announced his resignation over division of Andhra Pradesh, on Saturday met Congress president Sonia Gandhi who advised him “not to act in haste”. This is his second meeting with her in two days after being unhappy over the Centre’s decision to create Telangana and his decision to Jagan Reddy to quit as HRD min- challenge Andhra ister. The meeting Pradesh division triggered specula- decision in SC tion whether the On page 8 party was trying to persuade him and other ministers from Seemandhra region not to press their resignation. When he talked to reporters immediately after meeting Gandhi, Raju gave no indication of what he plans to do. “Yesterday, I had decided to resign. So I went to meet her and requested her that I would like to resign from the post of minister but she gave me the same advice that was given by the Prime Minister that I should not act in haste and that I should try and find a resolution to the numerous issues by working with the GoM and with other leaders from all over Andhra Pradesh”, he said.
employment to the youth, Rio regretted that the commitment of Atal Behari Vajpayee for providing 25,000 job opportunities during his visit in 2003 has not materialize and for which the State’s own meagre resources has gone to capacity building supporting the youth and accordingly around 1000 youths are presently employed
outside the State and working in various entrepreneurship sectors. He also mentioned about the raising of 7 IR Battalions thus employing around 7000 people and the burden placed on the State for managing the battalion, expenses incurred due to creation of 3 new districts and 22 new RD Blocks, creation of DUDA and viewed that 14th Finance Commission requires in depth study to understand the ground reality faced by the State Further, explaining about the increase of salary component as a result of 6th ROP implementation and the increase of DA every year, Rio desired that the 14th Finance Commission would understand the position of the resource crunch State like Nagaland and come to its rescue. “Ownership of land and resources cannot be shared but for business and other development
activities, we need the blessing of the Government of India,” Rio said.
month of August. It alleged the former MD to have misappropriated an unspecified amount of money, pushing the company to financial bankruptcy. The amount, alleged to have been misappropriated, is yet to be conclusively ascertained but is believed to run into crores of rupees. Further, investigators are still undecided on how to treat the case. Kohima police said that the content of the complaint registered did not dwell on details except the allegation against the former MD and the fund reportedly misappropriated. For now, investigators are undecided about the treatment of the case, i.e., whether to register it as a criminal or civil case. Nevertheless, Kohima
police are in the process of collecting data as regards the money involved. Only after proper verification can investigators proceed with the case. To that effect, the company has been asked to submit data, the Kohima police said. The reported shaky state of affairs in PYWS has affected an unspecified number of its employees and field agents as well as investors around Nagaland State, other sources said. Like other private investment firms that have come and gone, the company doled out interest to investors on the amount invested at periodic intervals. “So far no complaint has been received from the subscribers (investors),” the Kohima police added.
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute considers 140/90 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) and above to be high blood pressure. The 101 participants in the new study had an average blood pressure of 135/82 mm Hg, which is considered above normal but not yet classified as high blood pressure. Half of them were assigned to start the mindful-
ness-based stress reduction (MBSR) therapy right away and the rest were wait-listed to take the class at a later time. Mindfulness participants went to eight weekly group sessions and attended a day-long silent retreat. Each person was also asked to practice stress reduction for 45 minutes daily. The study participants, aged 20 to 75, were all counseled with standard high blood pressure advice: eat less salt, quit smoking and exercise more. At the end of the study period, both people who had gone through the mindfulness program and those on the wait list saw virtually no change in their blood pressure, according to findings published in the American Journal of Hypertension. Physical therapy researcher Marshall Hagins of Long Island University in Brooklyn said he was disappointed with the results, but only because he wanted the program to show benefits.
Memo submitted with proposal of Rs. 139.97 crore worth of projects
A memorandum was submitted to the 14th FC by the Government of Nagaland during the meeting. The memorandum comprising a total of 25 projects, proposed at an estimated cost of Rs. 139.97 crore, was submitted for consideration of the Commission. The memorandum also highlighted Nagaland’s economic status, the sixteen point agreement, problem and need for special dispensation as Special Category State, assessment of State Revenue, basic approach towards devolution of funds, maintenance of capital assets (Roads & Bridges), requirement to augment fund for local bodies, Relief subsidy, Service Tax etc.

Another private investment firm is now in the limelight. The fate of Kohima-based Progressive Youth Welfare Society (PYWS) is reportedly in a state of uncertainty after it was revealed that the company is in the midst of a financial crisis. Adding to the crisis, the company’s Managing Director has gone underground after reportedly resigning from the post in July last. enPo and ensf warns ‘Meditation alone doesn’t lower BP’ against factional violence DImApuR, OcTObeR 5 (mexN): Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization (ENPO) and Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) have jointly condemned the shootout incident that took place between Pungro and Phuvkyu village on October 3, where Shojim, a cadre of the GPRN/NSCN was reportedly shot to death by the NSCN (IM) there. Terming the incident as unfortunate, the two organizations in a press note stated that “it’s a direct challenge and insult” to the ENPO declaration of all ENPO jurisdiction as peace zone at the Longleng Session. ENPO and ENSF warned the “concerned Naga Political Group” responsible for “such heinous crime” that if such killing continues within its jurisdiction again, despite repeated appeals, the organizations will be
compelled to take stern action against any defaulting groups or faction. Further, the organizations stated that the people of Eastern Nagaland have neither given mandate to any faction to kill, and nor will tolerate such “heinous and civilized
and its environment had been disturbed repeatedly. “What are the ground rules laid down in the cease fire agreement? Does it give license to kill? Or does it protect those in arms?” Also, questioning the nature in which “those so called National workers” treat its own people, the press statement said that the NSCN (IM) should take stern action against its erring cadres by terminating them from the service of the national movement with immediate effect. ENPO and ENSF further anticipated justice to be delivered at the earliest time, and appealed to all armed factions operating within its jurisdiction to refrain from killing one another. It noted that the Naga political groups concerned will be held solely responsible for any untoward situation, if such acts are continued or repeated in future.
Nagaland a “failed state in maintaining providing peace and security to its citizen” act” committed within its jurisdiction. Expressing shock over the frequent shootout and killing incident in the state, the organizations termed Nagaland as a “failed state in maintaining/providing peace and security” to its citizen. They also questioned the GOI and the state law enforcing agency as to why they are silent when the society
NeW YORK, OcTObeR 5 (ReuTeRS HeAlTH): Stress reduction exercises have been linked to many health benefits, but lower blood pressure may not be one of them. A new study found eight weeks of mindfulness meditation had no effect on people with slightly elevated blood pressure who were not yet taking medication. “This doesn’t mean that meditation is bad. It just simply doesn’t lower blood pressure,” senior author Dr. Sheldon Tobe of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, said. He said he was expecting to see an effect on blood pressure based on past studies showing benefits with mindfulness meditation. But when he looked back over those earlier trials, Tobe found the majority of participants had been taking blood pressurelowering drugs. In those studies, mindfulness therapy could have worked by helping people take their medicine more consistent-
ly, Tobe explained. “Few interventions are as powerful as medication,” he told Reuters Health. “You can reduce salt intake or lose weight and help lower blood pressure, but high blood pressure medication has a more powerful effect.” One in three U.S. adults has high blood pressure, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

CONFEDERATION OF ALL NAGALAND STATE SERVICES EMPLOYEES’ ASSOCIATION (CANSSEA) Headquarters: Kohima Nagaland.
AN APPEAL TO 14TH FINANCE COMMISSION OF INDIA. The emergency executive meeting of CANSSEA, the apex organization of eighty thousand plus employees of the state, on 5th October 2013, welcomes the visit of the 14th Finance Commission of India to Nagaland with honour. It is the highest and the only constitutional body in whom we have hope of sustenance. Nagaland state, born of its peculiar political condition, has been dependant on financial awards of the Commissions since inception in paying its employees. Unlike mainland India, Nagaland lacks industries and other viable developments. Hence government job is the only source of employment. Therefore, we appeal to the visiting Commission to treat Nagaland as a special category state with adequate fund to usher in economic development and provisions to meet expenditure in implementing the ensuing 7th Revision of Pay with same effective date of 1st January 2016. Such needs were not projected by state government to relevant Commissions that preceded the 5th and 6th Revisions of Pay that led us to collision course with state authorities both times. The CANSSEA wishes all of you good health and success in your All-India mission. SD/ (DR K.DAVID SEMA) PRESIDENT

Going Back And Coming Back Liba hopeson BTC, Pfutsero
Journeying through life after accepting Christ is not easy. We walk in the narrow road that many do not go. In this tricky path, we come across hurdles after hurdles and problems after problems. Thus many desist treading or give up on the half-way. Though we have accepted Christ as our Lord and Savior, we continue to wrestle with numerous adversaries, among which, our desire is one main foe. We combat with the temptations, attacks of the evil forces and many other things of the world. Sometimes, the pull of the world is so intense that we tend to waver and shake our faith. At times, due to mounting adversities, problems, enticements and desires, we tend to backslide and turn away from God. There are times we go on our own way. The forces of the world become so strong sometimes that, we fail to give priority to God, our Creator. The difficulties we come across on the way are enormous and hence challenging. What keeps us going forward despite of all these obstacles and attacks?

There are different reasons that make me moving forward. One significant thing is, remembering and reflecting back the time I surrendered my life to God. Though the evil forces assail me and the world tempt me in a very attractive way that my desire become very strong, I’m pulled back by the thought of my commitment to God. I could clearly remember the time I poured my heart to God, confessed my sins and declared that I would follow Him in any circumstances and serve Him. I remember how tears came out from my eyes, as I realized my unworthiness in the sight of God. I become like Prophet Isaiah who become so low and humbled when he realized his unrighteousness and sins. Significantly, I experienced something amazing, which nobody can know and I cannot explain precisely how it happened, as it was of the Spirit. I felt something very different, which I believe, many who have dedicated their life to Christ have experienced too. That was the moment I made a promise that I will live for Him till my last breath, though attaining perfection is not possible. Thinking back about this precious moment is extremely valuable for me. When the world calls me to do something which is not according to God’s will, the memory of my com-
mitment rings in my mind and heart that I have committed my life to God. When Satan tempt me to do something which can make me stumble in a disastrous way, the remembrance of the moment committing my life to God pulls me back. So, I could withstand. When my own desires lure me and attack me, so that what are not alright seems ok or fine, the thought of my commitment to God take hold of me and make me stand. So, when my spiritual life is at stake, I go back to time I committed my life to Christ. And when I do this, I come back to Christ-consciousness. This precious memory – recalling the moment of committing my life to Christ – brings me back to Christ. Yes, I make mistakes. I backslide. I stumble and fall. I stray and get lost sometime. I should admit it. But I don’t stay long in such deserted places. I come home – ‘the home of Christ’. One of the reasons that I could come to my Master is that, I always try to recollect the moment I gave my life to Him. It was a very historic, great and memorable episode in my life. It teaches me, reminds me, controls me and pulls me back to my Savior. So, when I’m stuck up in this world – I go back to another world – the world of the time of dedication of my life. It actually brings me back to Christ. I call

The sales slide for Toyota has been steeper than the market, resulting in the company's market share falling from the peak of 7.03% in April to August of 2012 to 5.44% in April to August of 2013. The Innova being its flagship brand is one of the most successful products that Toyota has to offer to the Indian market. College students debate on Hornbill Festival KOHIMA, OCTOBER 5 (MExN): Sazolie College, Jotsoma organized the 8th inter-college debate competition on the topic, ‘Hornbill Festival is promoting the Nagas’ on October 5, 2013 at the College auditorium. The programme was graced by Rano M. Shaiza, former Member of Parliament as the guest of honour. The debaters gave a closer view of the Hornbill Festival and its growing impact on Naga society, a press release received here said. The treasury bench described the Hornbill Festival as the “festival of festivals”, an umbrella which brings the different tribes of Nagaland together, providing opportunity for cultural extravaganza. The opposition bench counteracted the motion by describing hornbill festival as an “evil backbone” of the Naga culture which is demoting the Nagas morally and ethically. The judges for the programme were Bano Haralu, Editor, Eastern Mirror, Dimapur, Viyelo Doula, Tourist Officer, Directorate of Tourism, Government of Nagaland, Topongchuba Chang, ENSF, Executive Member, and Yanpvuo Kikon, Senior Software
Engineer, e-governance (Accenture) and founder of The Naga Blog. The critic for the debate was Dr Buno Iralu, Lecturer, Shalom Bible Seminary, Sechü-Zubza. The judges and the critic congratulated the college for organizing the programme and encouraged the students and participants to protect and preserve the rich Naga culture and heritage. They also encouraged them to become more accountable, more sensible, and more responsible and to contribute something to the Naga society. Twenty two participants from different colleges of Nagaland participated in the competition. The first prize was bagged by Meribemo Kikon of Sazolie College, the second prize by Imkongsangba of Unity College and the third prize by Kanang Bangmei of Japfü Christian College. Five consolation prizes were also given. Earlier, Narola Dangti, Assistant Professor, Department of English chaired the programme, and invocation prayer was pronounced by Nzanthung Kikon, the College chaplain. Memory that needs Rehabilitation in the Naga Society Lemwang Chuhwanglim, Research Scholar & Activist
A
man once said, “A pastor needs counseling because he/she needs to strengthen his/her spiritual life to strengthen his/her church member’s spiritual life, therefore, counseling is meant for everyone. It is not just for someone whom we think that is not attending the Church service”. Who needs rehabilitation in the Naga society? Does the entire Naga society needs Rehabilitation or it is needed only for a drug addict and a HIV AIDS patient? The answer is a BIG SMILE on every single humorous Nagas face because everyone knows what a BIG SMILE means. A big smile says YES, the entire Nagas need rehabilitation to regain the memory of the past society which people lived more peacefully and faithfully in every single act of life that brought to the society where no rehabilitation was required like it is required today. What is Rehabilitation? According to Oxford Dictionary, rehabilitate means “to help to have a normal life again after they have been in prison or hospital for a long time and rehabilitation refers to restore to their former position, to restore to a good condition after it has been left decay” (Ed. Crowther, 1995). Restoration on the other hand is like a representation of the past memory (Hedrick Jr., 2000). Memory in this sense could be both good and bad memory. However, in this article, memory refers to a representation of good society in the past Naga society. This does not mean the past Naga society did not have a single problem. Problem is a part of society and solution and people are both part of problem and solution. To see why memory of rehabilitation is significant in the Naga society, we must try to see the differences between the past Naga society and the present Naga society. Every single Naga knows the present Naga situation although few people may have a good memory of the past. Nevertheless, it is vividly understandable that the past Naga society was not as corrupted and damaged as the present Naga society. Having these two comparative memories, one can dis-
tinctively say that the current Naga society requires Rehabilitation. This may sound romanticizing; however, romanticism does have a significant reality that we can make it happen. Let us question where does rehabilitation start? Many a time we focus on a change from within (individual’s heart and mind) but in this essay I would focus on a change from within groups/teams in the Naga society. Groups and teams are mostly associated with people working together in a Church, Institution, Organization, Union, Political party and a family. Based on many citizens in the Naga society, Churches have become the place of demarcation between rejection and acceptance through a dubious theological interpretation of who can be rejected and who can be accepted. This interpretation indicates a picture of a Pharisee who works in the church rejects another Pharisee who does not work but is a member of the same church. There is no question about many Non-Governmental Organizations and Institutions in Nagaland primarily focus on individual’s surplus earning than a process and a product that instill citizens a positive contribution toward the society. Politics in the Naga society became another conspiracy. Aung Sung Suu Kui, a Democratic leader and an activist of Myanmar says “Indeed politics is not bad but people make it bad”; politics in the current Naga society has been distorted by people themselves through conspiracies. Here comes another political Pharisee who rejects the role of a Pharisee from the other political party who are actually in the same

donesian society suffered in the hands of the former Communist government. For Zurbuchen memory is about the bad experienced of the past reflecting in the current society (Zurbuchen, 2005). However, it is a reversed memory I adopt in this essay which emphasized on good experienced of the past Naga
Time to speak and act
ILP Or No ILP? Shillong
lot of debate, discussion, for and against has been generated due to the Inner Line issue. They seem endless, and seem to get us into a ' nowhere ' promontory. The whole question is: why has this happened? Is it due to a ' political ' situation as many argue? Is it due to an effort to upstage people and political parties, which many feel? Or is it due to a xenophobia, which has valid reasons? It may be importunate to ask such questions, but they may also be pertinent! Moreover they seem to be obverse realities and flip sides of the coin. The entire issue, in my opinion is an abstraction: '' Fear ''. When real fears are juxtaposed with imaginary ones, there is something obfuscated, and something which may appear chimerical. Influx is often cited as a critique, influx happens anywhere as Janice Pariat and Samrat Choudhury pointed out in a recent article in '' The Shillong Times''. But what is this influx, who are these ' outsiders' are they ' foreign nationals' as the cry was in Assam three decades back? Or are they Indians from elsewhere? The protagonists of such a cry, also point out that certain states in North East India have been granted such protection, fair enough. But has this halted ' immigration'? The polemic. the argument, reverts to culture and ethnicity. In this regard, why are our sociologists and academics, maintaining a stoic silence? If ' smaller ' communities feel threatened about an erosion of their cultures, what is the way out? The main question is: why do they feel so? What has gone amiss? ' Small ' ( and I am using this term for want of a better word) communities feel insecure, that they may be swamped by migratory forces, a feeling which has been borne out by historical studies and Hegelian forces. But the Constitution of our country speaks, of an unmitigated diversity which is the foundation and logic of our ' unity '. What is this unity, has it happened? If states like Maharashtra, considered forward looking and ' developed ' in our country, can feel equally insecure and xenophobic, then why not the other parts? I am not at all justifying the recent upsurge, but I feel that the ' why ' has not been answered in the light of the events especially in North East India. Some speak in terms of Islamic infiltration, some talk about ' outsiders '. Who these outsiders or ' foreign nationals ' remain inchoate, a passive witness to turbulence. In between people and organizations, play both the cards, fuelled by other people and organizations. It is easy to blame politicians, but the public at large has a pivotal role to play! It, including the intelligentsia, also whips sentiments, and these go unrecorded. Politicians to many are necessary evils, but let's not forget, that when we need them we go running to them brazenly! They are NOT necessarily the root of all evil, as we glibly argue, in a self congratulatory manner, we need to go into a deeper introspection, and if this is dispassionately done, the fault maybe ours '' that we are underlings ''. Many thanks to Shakespeare for underpinning universal truths! Do we not need these ' foreigners ' for building our houses, doing our houses, and making our toilets look more ornate? Alas, we are far removed from staring at glassy truths. Once we look at ourselves in a more unbiased manner, the truth will emerge resoundingly. Can we do that, instead of blaming others? ILP or no ILP we have to be witnesses to inexorable truths, not only politicians, but also OURSELVES, the large compendium, which makes up our societies. To earn a living people will go anywhere, and this is true not only of plumbers, carpenters and masons. It is true of teachers and bureaucrats. So let's celebrate the ' truth ' without animadversion, however unpalatable it may be!! If we are cannily duplicitous in our arguments, we may pay the price of being victims! And if we are uniformist or stereotypical , then we should be prepared to accept ' bandhs ' and their like. The whole point is to work out strategies, study the decadal growths in population, and whether this has been endangering local communities. The onus here is of course on governments! But I have, personally speaking an empathy, however ' vague ' it might be: smaller communities who are not dispersed have a fear, an insecurity, which must be assuaged. Only time will tell, the great ' argument ' that is History!
politics just like a blind man leading another blind man. For instance, Mary S. Zurbuchen, one of the historians used a paradigm of historical memory from the perspective of how the In-
society reflecting in the current wrongheaded Naga society. I called it wrongheaded society because the weight of the current Naga society where churches, political parties, NGOs, Schools and many other groups are becoming burdens for the future Nagaland due to exposure of corrupt and abusive ideologies and practices in the society. What do Nagas need today? The answer is REHABILITATION of memory, the memory of a justice, faithfulness and just peace society that empowered the system and social structure. The idea of from within emerges from Nussbaum, who developed a theory of Clash within in contrast to theory depicted by Samuel Huntington clash of civilization. Huntington theory is based on the clash between the democratic West and antidemocratic Islam, whereas Nussbaum clash within emphases on the clash within the Indian society (Nussbaum, 2007). How can Nagas obtain R E H A B I L I TAT I O N ? The answer is Nagas can obtain rehabilitation by changing the system of government and social structure from within the Naga society without expecting any mana from the outside world. Unlike many people who focus on changing heart and mind of a person, I focus on changing the entire present social system and structure of capitalization and privatization. Capitalization and privatization I refer to that everything is bribed and bough by money exclusively focusing on personal wealth, that is how we see many luxurious cars and bungalows for those who have power to manipulate the system and on the other side we see people living
in a hut who do not have power. When such social system exists, corruption continues to exist and the sufferings are people who are powerless financially and position. Rehabilitation in the Naga society needs to be emerged from the Naga society itself among the Naga people. Who can become a counselor to rehabilitate the addicted Nagas? I propose a strategy of inter-counseling approach where every single organization, church, political party, students’ body and so on should become counselor for one another. Church can become counselor for the NGOs, Political party can become counselor for Churches, NGOs can become counselor for the entrepreneurs, and freedom fighters can become counselor for the entire citizens and vis-à-vis. The goal and objective of the inter-counseling approach is to restore a peaceful society that was in the past. Invitation and participation in the counseling program from one another among the preceding parties is needed. Therefore, learn to invite and learn to participate in the counseling program among them. One may argues that the past memory of peace will not be a contextual idea in the present society. Indeed no, it may not be a contextual however, in anything about the history of the past to bring into a present world; it requires reinterpretation of the past without distorting the meaning of the history and contextualizes it into a present society. Therefore, as rehabilitation means getting back to a normal like, Naga people needs a normal life today. Rehabilitation in Nagaland is not exclusively needed by drug addicts, alcoholics, HIV AIDS patients, prostitutes and crimes but it is needed at hand by political parties, Church leaders, NGOS, local Unions, Students’ Unions, Associations and Freedom fighters who are mentally, physically, spiritually and morally challenged and who have become addicted to social corruption; nobody can deny that we are addicted to unjust social activities. If not, we should not conceal from what Adolf Hitler said “Together we live as brothers and sisters or perish as fools”. Nothing is impossible if only we have determination, and determination I refer here to restore our peaceful society.

n a democratic set-up everyone is free to form an association or group, provided it is in conformity with the defined laws of that given society or state. Freedom of speech & expression & a free media are essential components towards the growth of a vibrant & liberal society. No society or state can really progress or develop when there exist threats, coercion & unchecked corruption. Diversity of opinions & ideas is a vital trend since it allows us to view & understand things or issues from different & wider perspectives. According to sociologists, conflict/diverse opinions is necessary for resolving social issues & healthy for social growth & cohesiveness. But only to the extent that conflict/diverse opinions is of constructive & positive application for social growth. In the present context of our state, efforts by the concerned citizens to highlight & express their views on different problems plaguing our society have met with lots of criticisms & opposition, even to the extent of a threat from some quarters. Where have we landed today? Is this mess our own creation or by the others? Aren’t we living in our own land that we are not even allowed to sell our own home-made products & goods in our own land. Why is some section trying to impose restrictions on our right to freedom of speech & expression, right to livelihood,& even right to life? Should we fight for two types of independence-political independence from outsiders & economic independence from our own brothers? Aren’t we free to form an association or group in our own state & land in a democratic way to safeguard our rights & interests? Inspite of being burdened with lots of issues & problems we have been very accommodating & tolerant for the sake of the political process & for the noble cause of the common Naga brotherhood & freedom. Yet ‘gratitude’ is not the word we hear in return. No is concerned about thousands of our youths being unemployed, no one/NGO seem to be bothered about the cries of the common people for justice. In the backdrop of this, concerted efforts by the well-informed citizens in forming the pro-peoples forums like ACAUT is a welcome step & should be encouraged & supported by one & all. History has shown that despots/tyrants were deposed; institutions which turned against the common welfare of the people, institutions which failed to rise up to the occasion to safeguard the peoples aspirations were discarded. Leaders without vision were replaced. Let’s learn from history. Let’s remember that there can be real peace & reconciliation only when we learn to respect & understand each other-big or small tribes, rich or poor, man or woman. Instead of trying to impose one’s will upon the others, diverse views must be thoroughly analyzed & channelized towards the positive effect. The stance of the Naga Hoho vis-à-vis the Nagaland Tribes Council[NTC] in dubbing the latter as “ premature….not appropriate… ”[Ref.02/10/2013,local dailies] rather reflects the image of the former in the way it chose to portray
the latter. Regarding this matter, lets ponder on some following points: 1. There is a forum by the name United Naga Council[UNC],a body encompassed of South Naga tribes under the Manipur state. 2. There is a forum by the name of the South Nagas Union of Nagaland[SNUN] in the Nagaland state. 3. So, can’t the Nagas of Nagaland too have a similar body or forum to represent them in the state of Nagaland? The Nagas of Nagaland were not and are not against the formation & functioning of the different Naga unions, be they in the north, south or west or for that matter even the Naga Hoho. Like any other Naga organization the NTC has clearly stated that it was formed for the welfare of the people. In the same way we don’t think the Nagas from the south, north or elsewhere are against the formation of the Naga forum by the Nagas of Nagaland in the Nagaland state. We know that the units under the UNC are also components under the Naga Hoho, same can become the case with the units under the NTC. If however the Naga Hoho still persist with the stance that there should be no union/body to represent the Nagas of Nagaland then it should go ahead with the same stance towards the ENPO & the CNTC as well. It should also apply the same yardstick towards the Nagas in the west, south or north as well. Whenever there appears or arises an intense misunderstanding or crisis in any given society, intelligentsia are expected to step in to render their ideas & help resolve the issues or to help prevent the unwanted situation. However in our state excepting the very few, most of them seems to be in a deep state of meditation or have went into a state of hibernation. Remember the welfare of the people is too good a thing to be left to the thugs & bullies. In this 21st century, whether we want the affairs of our state to be run in accordance with the democratic ideals of justice, liberty or equality or to be run according to the whims & dictates
of some vested individuals is a question which we need to ponder seriously & answer, the choice is ours. Even the church needs to wake up from it’s deep slumber & realize that it is the bounden duty of the church to speak & stand against injustice, corruption & tyranny. It cannot afford to remain complacent & indifferent towards the cries of its flock. Infact every Christian, man or woman, young or old is expected to stand for truth & to stand against injustice .If we don’t think & act now then even repentance would be too late for us. We have witnessed that there are some opportunists who would not hesitate to barter the rights of their people at the drop of a hat in return for position & self-interests. Who can be placated & bought with the posts of chairman, secretary & vice versa. Let us not blindly support ideas or institution/s which is/are suppressive just because the chairman or the secretary happens to be from our group, tribe or likewise. Let us differentiate & identify between the value-based leaders and the interest-based leaders. We have also noted that whenever a person raises his/her voice against certain detrimental policies & actions, scapegoats from the same tribe or community are used to counter & suppress that voice. This negative trend is highly reprehensible & must be discontinued for a better Naga unity. No person or institution should try to mislead, distract, or resort to propaganda to divert or hoodwink the attention of the general populace from the important issues confronting us today because any such move or action would prove to be counterproductive. We Nagas today know who is who. We know the language of colonialism, we know the language of pacifism, we knows the language of communism. Today we are not oblivious to the events & situations around us & around the world. We believe & know that we can really progress & develop only when there is peace, justice, equality & liberty. The greatest enemy confronting us today is not the guns; it is “OUR SILENCE”. Let us not fear. Time to speak up and act.

A Naga Youth Exodus?
POSITIVE MORALITY WITHIN THE NEGATIVE -If you think that the church, and the Bible she believes in, is mostly about issuing negative commandments, think again. It is shorter and easier to state the things forbidden than the things permitted precisely because most things are permitted and only a few are forbidden-
M

any today look at the church with a very mixed notion. More often than not it bends toward the negative. And we who call ourselves church people have to face this fact that, yes, more often than not, we do bend toward the negatives like “don’t do this, don’t eat this, don’t drink this, don’t sing that, don’t wear that”. And the list goes on. Oh, it wears you down; it stretches your face longer. Have you ever experienced pulling your bulging stomach inside when actually it should be going ahead of you, and up here you are trying to put on a nice smile to impress someone? Well, I have. I think the feeling is similar when you hear too much of negative commands. In both cases, you don’t get sufficient space and air to breathe. Yes, I do agree that church people give a lot of negative commandments, and I am afraid more than the Bible, and even more than God himself intended. This is what I wish to write about in the following lines. There is a popular joke about Moses coming down from Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandment stone tablets. He tells the Israelites, “I have good news
and bad news. The good news is this- the commandments are down to ten. The bad news is ‘thou shall not commit adultery’ is still one of them”. At first encounter these commandments may seem negative, and as it always does, negativity provokes our displeasure and even curiosity. But have you ever noticed that there are only ten commandments in the “Ten Commandments”? I mean there could be a thousand negative commandments, because there are a thousand things a person could do in his lifetime. By the way, Moses did not negotiate with God on our behalf. God gave only ten. I think it simply proves that while some things are forbidden and therefore “thou shall not”, most things are permitted and therefore “thou shall live an abundant life on earth”. GK Chesterton, in his brilliant article Negative and Positive Morality, talks about this issue. (Some of the sentences in this article are simply a paraphrase of Chesterton’s article. The other crude ones are mine) Chesterton writes: “The truth is that the curtness of the Commandments is an evidence, not of the gloom and narrowness of a religion but of its liberality and humanity. It is shorter to
The Gift of Patience
state the things forbidden than the things permitted precisely because most things are permitted and only a few are forbidden. An optimist who insisted on a purely positive morality would have to begin by telling a man that he might pick dandelions on a common and go on for months before he came to the fact that he might throw pebbles into the sea. In comparison with this positive morality the Ten Commandments rather shine in that brevity which is the soul of wit.” It’s quite amazing (and refreshing) to know that the Ten Commandments are only ten. No wonder the bible says in 1 John 5:3 “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” And regarding the allegations that these Ten promotes a negative morality, Chesterton says that their negativity in their true essence reveal a positive implication. That a person should not commit adultery is a “negative” commandment, but its implication is highly positive because obedience to this commandment will positively ensure that the family will be safeguarded and will even prosper. Thou shall not murder implies that the intended victim has the
right to live and do a thousand things he has always wanted to do. Not only the intended victim but even his family members feel the vibrant surge of life because this “negative” rule says thou shall not kill. I believe I am not committing an exegetical error if I interpret this to mean—Live and Let Live. Now that’s highly positive and thoroughly Biblical. The Commandments are not a roadblock to life. They are an affirmation of life. They allow us to live. They teach us to live. They set boundaries so that we don’t fall off the cliff. Someone rightly said that God’s Commandments are there to protect us. Sometimes the church gets over-protective and in the process may bully people. But God is not. For God, it is just another indication of His love for us. And for us too, our obedience to Him is just another way of showing that we love Him. Jesus calls us to live an abundant live. And any right and healthy thinking person will agree that and abundant live does not thrive on negativity. It thrives on dreams, on things possible, on things beautiful and enjoyable, on things achievable and on things eternal. And only through Jesus Christ this life is possible.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience… Galatians 5:22
E
very good and perfect gift is from above and patience which is the fourth listed fruit of the Spirit is among them (James 1:16). It is good to think of this virtue in the light of what God wants us to be. This virtue is also what love is and when we value we begin to experience more of God’s love in us. As I studied the truths of it I realized that it wins the favor of both God and man. However, rather than explaining what it really is, I would like to present it in the light of God’s love for us. If I were to ask you what God’s love is like? The simple answer would be that God’s love is like God. In reference to this the 1st Epistle of John states “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him (1st John 4:16b). This literal statement opens our eyes to what we really are and if we have it not in us, we risk of being shot in the head by our adversary. The interpretation of this is that without the truth in us, we remain condemned, unsaved and under judgment. If this sounds harsh and brutal to you, I reckon that you think of it and meditate on what it is. The irony is that we tend to be impatient about every trivial issue, while God shows patience to us by giving us chances after chances to repent. It is pertinent to understand that the Lord does not want us to face death when the wicked are judged for their wicked acts. The truth is we wouldn’t have woken up to see the light of the day if God hadn’t been patient with us. Instead of thanking God for His patience we tend to be impatient with our lovers and enemies alike. This act of insensitiveness will lead to our ruin if we don’t repent of it. The Lord’s patience depicts love and it is only because of His love that we still breathe the air we breathe. In the scripture it reads “Multitudes who sleeps in the dust will awake; some to ever lasting life, others to shame and ever lasting contempt (Daniel 12:2). This prophetic revelation of Daniel sends jitters down my spine and it is important to note this with seriousness and sincerity lest we die without the truth in us. I know this sounds bitter and it will certainly taste bitter indeed. A truth I want to reveal is that the gravity of our sins would have bought God’s swift judgment upon us if He had not been slow to anger. The reality of it is that if serial killers are to be punished for their crimes? Shouldn’t serial sinners be punished for their sins? The truth is that the guns of multiple snipers are pointed at us but God in His love and mercy threatens the killers with death if they dare pull the trigger of their guns. This seems to be a brutal illustration but it will be wiser to
hear brutal words in this life than to experience brutal death and torment in the next death. However, this is written to awaken sinners to warn them about the torments of hell. What we are experiencing now is undeserved existence and undeserved blessings and it will really grief the Holy Spirit of God if we are to continue living in the ways of sin and unrighteousness (Ephesians 4:30). In Paul’s letter to the Romans he states “You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man some might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:68). This act of love depicts God’s love for us and it will be a tragedy if anyone is to die without His love. Further in the 1st Epistle of Timothy Paul again made his statement of truth by saying “Here is a trust worthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ came into the world to save sinners of whom am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy, so that in mw, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on Him and receive eternal life ( 1st Timothy 1:15-16 ). The patience of Christ means salvation and I trust that you will understand it before the day of death and destruction comes upon you. We shall receive undeserved grace, undeserved mercy and undeserved salvation when we truly return to Christ in genuine repentance. However, if our acts of repentance are not genuine, we will be labeled as liars and every liar will be destined to suffer the torments of hell (Revelation 21:8). In all of this God is not willing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance (2nd Peter 3:9). And if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness (1st John 1:9). This is just another chance for the living sinners to make a decision before they die in their sins. The words of the present will certainly be remembered in the future. But the question is: Will this be remembered in heaven or in hell? Once the door is shut it will not be opened. Let not this become a thorn to you in the future. Accept the truth now and be secured in salvation. This is the will of God for all creations. Think of it and accept this as a gift. God died for sinners. oung Naga adults seem to exude a common thesis — church is elusive. The belief system presented to them is substandard to their established viewpoint. Religion is plain disgust to the already made up mind. On the other hand, the church thinks it is built on solid perspectives. How do the two correlate? Acutely bleak likelihood. Some years hence and the church will perhaps be derelict given the present dwindling church attendance. Many are playing church requiems already, while the church stresses heaven every funeral. Irony of sorts? Faith-based life is at best nihilistic and hence, better off with God being dead. Church is a laughingstock dead on! This probably might be because more time is spent on criticizing rather than evangelizing. The “100% Christians” tag is a farce gone stale. The young Naga adults don’t buy this. They are not for sale. The days of 70s or before revival are over — losing more people than reaching. The church is riveted on the past. This “rear-view mirror” vision as is usually termed is a disgrace any day. There is another conjured up thought that God wants the church to go on forever. In the mean time, generations are moving towards the future. Subjective God? The theme song is probably Black Sabbath’s “God is Dead.” And all seem to be singing the lines within themselves: “Do you believe a word what the Good Book said? Or is it just a fairytale and God is dead? God is dead.” And, you have to repeat the line “God is dead” four times according to the song. When the church only repeats “God is alive” as a legalistic practice like liquor prohibition, clean election and others, the church will stand more and more on the margins in the Naga society. Waging legalistic wars breeds only nominalism and eats from the inside. The mention of yeast 39 times or so in the Bible is a clear indicative of this — eaten from the inside. The church is in the Lost and Found box. Hyperbole like expensive church buildings, deacon board monopoly, lavish spending — a consumeristic materialism? — and more can even demoralize followers of Jesus Christ, forget about those who don’t. Wonder church? The theologians put the Naga commoners in a conundrum too. There is more of a tussle between the theological and cultural left and right rather than live out Christ. Contradictions do not fare well especially among the logical lot of the Naga society. Reverends aren’t reverend; pastors aren’t pastoral; evangelists aren’t evangelical; prophets aren’t prophetic; apostles aren’t apostolic; prayer centres aren’t prayerful — it is not well with the soul. Bold presentation, clear biblical teaching and compassion for the hurting are all locked up in a cupboard with spider webs. The church is a dork to the Naga commoners yet Jesus was with commoners alike and ahead of his times. The nerds would rather stay self-satisfied. So, two or three generations since the advent of Christianity, is it a Naga youth exodus?

ot long ago, a friend of mine made a major decision that eventually led to the breakup of his family. I spoke with the friend about the wrong thinking that was controlling his actions. His reply was the common Christian retort: “Well, I’ve prayed, and I have peace about it.” I was shocked by his response. I could not see how a mature believer could claim, that as an answer to prayers for wisdom needed in a tough situation, the Lord had supplied “peace” toward a course of action that was in contradiction to the Scriptures. The Lord intends for believers to enjoy peace in many areas. Christ, through his death and resurrection, removes God’s enmity with us—we have peace with God (Rom. 5:1). In Christ, the Lord destroyed barriers that limited fellowship between Jew and Gentiles—he provided peace— making believers of every race “one new man” in Christ (Eph. 2:14-15). Christ desires believers to minimize conflicts within a local assembly, sharing in one mind about the ministry—working together in peace (Phil. 4:2). Also, our Lord offers to provide supernatural relief from anxieties to those who seek him in prayer: “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 4:7). But this promise is often wrongly used as a way to feel a sense of “peace” about what one has determined for himself to be the will of God. Is it just me, or is it rare to meet believers who claim to have peace about decisions that would lead to enduring pain? Even fewer people seem to have peace about serving a poorly resourced ministry, or sharing one’s faith boldly at risk of social ostracism. I have served young adults who claimed “peace” about moving in with their parents when they are
experiencing financial hardship. However, they do not have peace about getting a better job to offset the family’s budget expansion created by their return. It would be a precious thing to meet the church leader, who, when asked to step down from leading, will return and say, “I have prayed, and I have peace about it. If someone else would be a better leader, then I will step down.” Instead, many tend to appeal to having peace about stepping down only when ministry hits a rough spot, and when leaving will insert a harmful discontinuity to the church. Could it be that the “peace” we claim from on the basis of Philippians 4:7 is merely us settling on the desires that are most agreeable with us? We impose the notion of “God’s peace” on these desires (even when they contradict Scripture) because they will lead to the absence of pain. God’s will, in contrast, tends to involve harder paths that demand suffering and endurance. I once asked a married couple to consider serving in the ministry to children. Within two days they returned to me with the “weprayed-we-have-peace” mantra. When I explored their reasoning, they could not explain how they came to have such peace. They had the time, gifts, and abilities to serve. Ministry to the children, however, involved great sacrifice and yielded little prestige. Sadly, when asked by another person to serve in a position of church governance, this couple had peace, noting, “God would want us to lead others.” Aren’t children “others?” Pastorally, allow me to recommend three ways to avoid confusion between our own desired outcomes and the will of God: First, we should run our thoughts past the spiritual leaders responsible for our souls (cf. 1 Thess. 5:12; Heb. 13:17). Those who are faithful in their stewardship of shepherding are able to bring a perspective we have not
considered because the thought of pain hinders us. Godly shepherds, elders, teachers, and parents have a responsibility to speak into our lives everything that is right. Second, related to the first, we should seek out the voices of mature friends rather than either of the voices of immature friends or unbelievers whose lives seem to be fairing better than ours. When a marriage struggles with intimacy, it is easy to envy the friend who left his marriage and appears to be happy in an adulterous relationship. This type of friend cannot be a measure for determining the will of God, because he is living in sin. Rather, the Christian friend enduring a less-than-perfect-marriage with joy is the one you should seek. We should go to such friends and share the depth of our suffering so that they can walk with us through our trials. Third, remind yourself that whenever we are in pain, we want to be free from pain, and that desire affects how we “hear” the voice of God. Some of the essential things needed for the free-from-anxietypeace of Philippians 4:7 are truthfulness, and the abilities to both commend the decision to others and offer praise to the Lord for the decision: “Whatever is true… whatever is commendable… if there is anything worthy of praise… and the God of peace will be with you” (Phil. 4:8-9). If we do not hold our decisions to these standards, we are not being honest about having peace. Our Lord Jesus, with a full understanding of the wrath facing him at the Cross, came to a settled decision in prayer: “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will” (Mt. 26:42). By embracing suffering rather than letting it be the missing piece in determining God’s will, he was able to provide us the peace we need to endure our trials as the will of God. Eric C. Redmond is Executive Pastoral Assistant and Bible Professor in Residence at New Canaan Baptist Church in Washington, DC. He blogs at “A Man from Issachar.” (Source: Christianity.com)
H
ave you ever read a portion of Scripture - perhaps even several pages or chapters - only to realize that you have no idea what you just read? Your eyes may be reading words but your mind is thinking about the phone call you just received or your day’s schedule. If you wish to know God, you must know His Word, advised C. H. Spurgeon.
How to make the Word come alive within you: Write out portions of the Word. Do you remember in elementary school when the teacher would instruct the class to copy a list from the blackboard? The teacher knew you were more likely to grasp and remember the concepts if you copied the words. God knew how prone His people were to forget what He had told them. Over and over, He challenged them to remember Him, to remember His law, to remember what He had done for them. Taking time to write out specific passages from the Word forces you to think about what you are reading and to observe the details of the text more carefully. You could begin by writing out paragraphs of scriptures on index cards, then meditating on or memorizing those passages. Write in your Bible. Underline verses you find particularly meaningful to you. In time your Bible will tell a story of your personal journey of faith during a specific period of time. Circle repeated words or phrases. Write cross references in the margin as well as noting the meaning of specific words or phrases. Record insights. When John was in exile, he was given a vision of heaven. The Lord appeared to him and said, Write on a scroll what you see...Write, therefore, what you have seen (Rev. 1:11,19). Likewise, you can write what you have seen in scripture. Use journals to record your observations and insights that the Holy Spirit has shown you while reading and meditating on the Word. Each time you write, record the date and passage you are reading. Record your responses. Ask yourself, What should I do? God told Ezekiel that the problem with His people was that They sit before you to listen to your words, but they do not put them into practice (Ex. 33:31). How does this truth apply to my life? What changes need to be made in my life? Record milestones in your spiritual pilgrimage. When the Israelites were attacked by the Amalekites, God used the occasion to teach the eager Joshua to rely, not on his natural strength or ability, but on the power of God revealed each time Moses raised his arms. Not wanting Joshua ever to forget that the Amalekites were his eternal enemies and that He alone had the power to overcome them, the Lord said to Moses, Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered (Ex. 17:14). This is perhaps the first Biblical illustration of what we call journaling. When you have spiritual achievements (understanding the death of a loved one, coming to terms with your frailties, learning about obedience), write them down as a reminder of the providence of God. Jagan Reddy begins indefinite fast
To challenge Andhra Pradesh division decision in Supreme Court hyderAbAd, OctOber 5 (Pti): YSR Congress party president YS Jaganmohan Reddy on Saturday launched an indefinite hunger strike at his residence in Hyderabad protesting the Centre's "arbitrary" decision to divide Andhra Pradesh and said his party would challenge the Union Cabinet's decision in the Supreme Court. "We will challenge the Centre's decision (to divide AP) in the Supreme Court," Jagan said at the 'deeksha' camp. Noting that there were "legal problems" involved in the state's division, he wondered how the Centre could find solutions in six weeks. "We are opposing the unilateral manner in which the Centre is functioning. How can it go ahead with the bifurcation process without a resolution in the state assembly?" Jagan asked. "We have never heard of an instance of state bifurcation without a resolution in the Assembly," he said. The Kadapa MP asked why the Centre shouldn't change its decision "when there is so much happening in the state",
when it could revoke the ordinance (aimed at protecting convicted lawmakers) on the intervention of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi. This is the second time that Jagan is undertaking an indefinite fast on the issue. Last month, he went on an indefinite hunger-strike in the Chanchalguda Jail, where he was lodged as an undertrial in an alleged disproportionate assets case against him, but it was foiled on the fifth day. Following the Union Cabinet's approval of division of the state, Jagan, after being granted bail in the case, relaunched his agitation blaming the Centre and the Congress for going ahead with the bifurcation process without addressing the concerns of "majority of people". Scores of YSRC activists gathered at his Lotus Pond residence to greet Jagan as he began the stir at 11.30am after paying homage at the bust of his late father YS Rajasekhara Reddy. Seemandhra bandh enters second day; normal life hit
hyderAbAd, OctOber 5 (Pti): Normal life remained crippled for the second day on Saturday in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions where a bandh is being observed to protest the Centre’s decision to bifurcate the State. Andhra Pradesh Non-Gazetted Officers (APNGOs) and other unitedAP supporters have given a 48-hour bandh call, while Jaganmohan Reddyled YSR Congress has called for 72hour shutdown in the non-Telangana regions. Both protests began on Friday morning. Educational and commercial establishments remained closed in Seemandhra (coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema), where normal life was thrown out of gear. Dwaraka Tirumala Rao, IG (Coastal Andhra) said, they have deployed additional forces keeping in view attacks on residences and properties of some Congress leaders on Friday. “Additional forces have been deployed in some areas and situation was under control. As long as agitations are peaceful we have no objection. But if they turn violent then we will swing into action and file cases,” he said. Sporadic incidents of violence, including attack on public and private property, were reported on the first day
of the shutdown. Offices of ruling Congress came under attack from agitators in several districts. Commercial and educational establishments belonging to PCC President Botsa Satyanarayana were also targeted and police have stepped up security at these locations and also in sensitive areas. The pro-united Andhra employees, including the staff of state-run Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC), are already on strike since mid-August. Meanwhile, YSR Congress chief Jaganmohan Reddy is likely to launch his fast-unto-death on Saturday against the Centre’s move. TDP President N Chandrababu Naidu has announced an indefinite fast in New Delhi from Monday demanding “justice” for Seemandhra. On October 3, the Union Cabinet had decided to go ahead with creation of Telangana state from out of Andhra Pradesh. Hardships to Tirumala devotees Meanwhile, Tirupati, which attracts a large number of devotees everyday, wore a deserted look as buses are not plying to the temple town in Chittoor district in view of the ongoing stir by APSRTC employees.
Two militants held after shootout in Andhra Agra battles record rain in 12 hours
hyderAbAd/chennAi, Oct 5 (iAnS): Two militants hiding in a house in Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor district were arrested Saturday after an 11 hour joint operation by policemen from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. A policeman from Tamil Nadu was injured when the militants opened fire. Unconfirmed reports said an inspector of the Tamil Nadu Police died in the firing. Tamil Nadu Police were targeted during searches in a residential area in Put-
house but the militants fired at the policemen from another house. A tip off about the hideout emerged during investigations into the murder of Bharatiya Janata Party leader V. Ramesh in Salem and other Hindu leaders in Tamil Nadu. On Friday, the Tamil Nadu Police arrested Fakruddin, who was wanted for allegedly planting a “pipe bomb” in Madurai when BJP leader L.K. Advani was touring the state.
AgrA, Oct 5 (iAnS): The Taj city of Agra was Saturday battling the consequences of a record 142 mm downpour in just 12 hours a day earlier. This year Agra has had 1,003 mm of rain against the annual average of around 675 mm. It took the entire day Friday for shopkeepers and tradres to assess the huge losses as rain water filled their warehouses and entered even some of the glitzy showrooms, all decked up for the
festive season. On Saturday, the municipal corporation was still pumping out water from shopping complexes and residential colonies. Some roads collapsed and parts of the underground drains caved in, causing more problems. The blame game continues. “When you illegally construct nursing homes or shopping complexes and fill up ponds to raise structures, what do you expect?” asked Shravan Kumar Singh, an
exasperated activist. Water entered several private nursing homes while entire colonies were marooned Friday. In the rural hinterland, the situation was worse as fields got submerged by a sea of water. Farmer Ravi Singh said the heavy rains had damaged the bajra crop. The region involving Agra district and surrounding areas has been lashed by unprecedented rains. Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had to cancel their public meeting at Mainpuri due to the wet season. In 1910, Agra received 169 mm in a single day. “But those days there was no problem of water logging and the city was much smaller in size and population,” said social activist Anand Rai. “Now Agra is spread out and the natural waterways have all been usurped by greedy land sharks,” Rai said.
SrinAgAr, OctOber 5 (AP): The Indian army said Saturday that it killed seven suspected rebels in two separate gunbattles near the heavily militarized line dividing the disputed Kashmir region between India and Pakistan. Four militants were killed Saturday after they crossed over from Pakistani-held territory into the Indian portion of Kashmir in Kupwara region, an army officer said. Three rebels were killed Friday in another clash near the de facto border, said the Indian policemen drag a Jammu and Kashmir government employee as they detain him officer, who spoke on conduring a protest in Srinagar, India, Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013. Indian police Saturday detained dozens of government employees demanding payment of arrears in salaries and raising dition of anonymity, in line with military policy. of retirement age, among other demands. He said the Indian army recovered the bodies of six rebels and some weapons. The Indian army says a large number of insurgents trained and armed by Pakistani forces try to enter Indian territory each year around this time, before snow starts blocking Himalayan passes and their movement. Pakistan denies the charge. The latest fighting occurred near the abandoned border village of Shala Bhata, where the army says its troops have been battling dozens of armed rebels for 12 days. There was no independent confirmation of the incidents.
Lt. Gen. Gurmeet Singh, an Indian army commander in Kashmir, said Wednesday that Indian soldiers encountered up to 40 rebels on Sept. 24 in Shala Bhata. He said 12 militants were killed and five Indian soldiers wounded in the fighting at Shala Bhata, which is about 150 kilometers (95 miles) northwest of Srinagar, the main city in Indian-held Kashmir. The commander denied Indian media reports that some Pakistani soldiers had occupied the village or any Indian military outposts there. However, he suggested that some Pakistani special
troops might be among the infiltrators. The Pakistani military denied its troops had crossed the disputed border into Indian-controlled territory. A senior Indian police officer, however, said some intruders had occupied some forward Indian posts in Shala Bhata. The officer spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. India and Pakistan have fought two wars over control of Kashmir since they gained independence from Britain in 1947, while rebel groups have been fighting since 1989 for indepen-
dence or for merger with neighboring Pakistan, though most resistance is now shown through street protests. An estimated 68,000 people have been killed in the conflict. A 2003 cease-fire agreement between India and Pakistan has largely calmed the disputed Kashmir border. But the two sides occasionally accuse each other of violating it by firing mortars or gunshots. India has long accused Pakistan of training and arming Kashmiri militants. Pakistan denies this and says it only gives moral and diplomatic support.
AhmedAbAd, OctOber 5 (ht): When Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi came out on September 27 against his own party to criticise the ordinance for protecting convicted law-makers, the response from Modi was ridicule for “shahzada (prince)”. But he was curiously silent on whether the ordinance should actually be torn up and thrown away, as Gandhi suggested at a press conference. The reason is simple. Some of Modi’s aides and too many BJP legislators in Gujarat face the same fate as Lalu Prasad of the RJD and Rasheed Masood of the Congress.
“Of the 182 candidates who got elected in the Gujarat assembly in 2012, 31% or 57 MLAs have criminal cases against them,” said Jagdeep Chhokar of Gujarat Election Watch (GEW). GEW is an initiative of the Association for Democratic Reforms, set up by professors of the Indian Institute of ManagementAhmedabad and civil society members. According to GEW, of the 57 legislators, 24 have “very serious” charges against them. And among the top 10, six are from the BJP stable. Not only MLAs, sitting BJP MPs, such as Prabhatsinh Chauhan from Panchmahal and Vithal Radadia from Porbandar, are facing serious criminal charges. The most crucial blow that Modi may have to take if things do not go his way is disqualification of his closest aide, BJP general secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh Amit Shah. A key accused in the confinement and fake encounters of gangster Sohrabuddin, his wife
Kauser Bi and accomplice Tulsiram Prajapati, Shah is at present out on bail and campaigning in UP. One of the CBI lawyers handling Shah’s case — transferred to the Mumbai CBI court so that he could not influence the investigation or the witnesses — said the CBI was likely to approach the Supreme Court for cancelling Shah’s bail. “Besides the Sohrabuddin case, Shah is also under the CBI scanner for two other fake encounters of Ishrat Jahan and Sadiq Jamal,” said lawyer Mukul Sinha, fighting for the victims’ families. Ishrat Jahan, a Mumbai college student, and three of her alleged accomplices — Gujarat police claimed they were terrorists — were killed by the police in Ahmedabad in 2004. Sadiq Jamal, also branded as a terrorist, was killed in 2003 by Gujarat police’s crime branch. Another close Modi associate and former minister, gynaecologist Maya Kodnani, was convicted
by a special trial court for leading a mob that killed 97 people in Naroda Patiya during the 2002 Gujarat riots. What’s more, a senior minister in Modi’s cabinet, Babu Bokhiria, was convicted by a trial court in a `54-crore illegal limestone mining scam this year. Bokhiria continues to be a minister. Another member of the Modi cabinet, Purushottam Solanki, is facing investigation for allegedly giving away 50 fisheries contracts without going through the tendering process. He hasn’t yet been charged. Also, the CBI is investigating the role Junagarh MP Dinu Solanki of the BJP allegedly played in the murder of RTI activist Amit Jethwa, who had exposed Solanki and his relatives’ role in an illegal mining scam. So, since the July 10 order of the Supreme Court has enough firepower to wipe out a considerable portion of Narendra Modi’s mothership, his silence was eloquent.

CAD will be well under $70 billion: Chidambaram
bAngAlOre, OctOber 5 (the hindu): Union Finance Minister said on Saturday that he is confident the Current account Deficit would be “well under $70 billion” by the end of the current fiscal. Speaking at the inauguration of 101 branches of the State Bank of Mysore, to commemorate its centenary, Mr. Chidambaram said, “We need not be despondent about this period of stress.” Observing that “the people of India save like no other people in the world,” he said “channelising savings into investment would enable the country get through the crisis.” Asked to explain the reasons for his confidence in taming the CAD, Mr. Chidambaram said his optimism arose from the fact that gold imports “compressed sharply” from 335 tonnes in the April-June 2013 quarter to about 65-70 tonnes in the July-September quarter. He also referred to the RBI Governor’s statement on Friday that accruals to the tune of $5.6 billion had been made into FCNR(B)
accounts. The “brisk pickup” of exports was another reason for his optimism, he said. Asked if there would be
an additional capital infusion in banks, in order to enable them to lend more, Mr. Chidamabaram said, “That depends on how much ad-
India’s forex reserves drop by $1.11 billion
mumbAi, Oct 5 (iAnS): India’s foreign exchange (forex) reserves fell by $1.11 billion to $276.26 billion for the week ended Sep 27 as compared to $277.38 billion in the previous week due to a sharp drop in the value of foreign currency assets, official data showed. The forex reserves has declined sharply after a significant gains in the previous two weeks. The reserves had increased by $277.38 billion and $544.7 million respectively in the previous two weeks. He said the Government would ensure that both the commodity and equity exchanges of the MCX function without any “malfeasance or misfeasance.” Asked if the recent Supreme court’s interim order restraining the Government from making Aadhaar mandatory for services, Mr. Chidambaram said he was confident that the Government’s “detailed affidavit” would satisfy the Court about “the larger public interest and pass an appropriate order.” He pointed out that about one crore LPG connections, of the 13-14 crore connections nationwide, are likely to be “duplicate accounts,” implying that the linkage with Aadhaar could result in savings running into several hundred crore rupees.

An unmistakable sense of unease has been growing in capitals around the world as the U.S. government from afar looks increasingly befuddled — shirking from a military confrontation in Syria, stymied at home by a gridlocked Congress and in danger of defaulting on sovereign debt, which could plunge the world’s financial system into chaos. While each of the factors may be unrelated to the direct exercise of U.S. foreign policy, taken together they give some allies the sense that Washington is not as firm as it used to be in its resolve and its financial capacity, providing an opening for China or Russia to fill the void, an Asian foreign minister told a group of journalists in New York this week. Concerns will only deepen now that President Barack Obama canceled travel this weekend to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum in Bali and the East Asia Summit in Brunei. He pulled out of the gatherings to stay home to deal with the government shutdown and looming fears that Congress will block an increase in U.S. borrowing power, a move that could lead to a U.S. default. The U.S. is still a pillar of defense for places in Asia like Taiwan and South Korea, providing a vital security umbrella against China. It also still has strong allies
in the Middle East, including Israel and the Gulf Arab states arrayed against alQaida and Iran. But in interviews with academics, government leaders and diplomats, faith that the U.S. will always be there is fraying more than a little. “The paralysis of the American government, where a rump in Congress is holding the whole place to ransom, doesn’t really jibe with the notion of the United States as a global leader,” said Michael McKinley, an expert on global relations at the Australian National University. The political turbulence in Washington and potential economic bombshells still to come over the U.S. government shutdown and a possible debt default this month have sent shivers through Europe. The head of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, worried about the continent’s rebound from the 2008 economic downturn. “We view this recovery as weak, as fragile, as uneven,” Draghi said at a news conference. Germany’s influential newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung bemoaned the U.S. political chaos. “At the moment, Washington is fighting over the budget and nobody knows if the country will still be solvent in three weeks. What is clear, though, is that America is already politically bankrupt,” it said. Obama finds himself at the nexus of a government in chaos at home and a wave
of foreign policy challenges. He has been battered by the upheaval in the Middle East from the Arab Spring revolts after managing to extricate the U.S. from its long, brutal and largely failed attempt to establish democracy in Iraq. He is also drawing down U.S. forces from a more than decade-long war in Afghanistan with no real victory in sight. He leads a country whose people have no interest in taking any more military action abroad. As Europe worries about economics, Asian allies watch in some confusion about what the U.S. is up to with its promise to rebalance military forces and diplomacy in the face of an increasingly robust China. Global concerns about U.S. policy came to a head with Obama’s handling of the civil
war in Syria and the alleged use of chemical weapons by the regime of President Bashar Assad. But, in fact, the worries go far deeper. “I think there are a lot of broader concerns about the United States. They aren’t triggered simply by Syria. The reaction the United States had from the start to events in Egypt created a great deal of concern among the Gulf and the Arab states,” said Anthony Cordesman, a military affairs specialist at the Center for International Studies. Kings and princes throughout the Persian Gulf were deeply unsettled when Washington turned its back on Egypt’s long-time dictator and U.S. ally Hosni Mubarak during the 2011 uprising in the largest Arab country. Now, Arab allies in the Gulf
voice dismay over the rapid policy redirection from Obama over Syria, where rebel factions have critical money and weapons channels from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other Gulf states. It has stirred a rare public dispute with Washington, whose differences with Gulf allies are often worked out behind closed doors. Last month, Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal warned that the renewed emphasis on diplomacy with Assad would allow the Syrian president to “impose more killing.” After saying Assad must be removed from power and then threatening military strikes over the regime’s alleged chemical weapons attack, the U.S. is now working with Russia and the U.N. to collect and destroy Damascus’ chemi-
cal weapons stockpile. That assures Assad will remain in power for now and perhaps the long term. Danny Yatom, a former director of Israel’s Mossad intelligence service, said the U.S. handling of the Syrian crisis and its decision not to attack after declaring red lines on chemical weapons has hurt Washington’s credibility. “I think in the eyes of the Syrians and the Iranians, and the rivals of the United States, it was a signal of weakness, and credibility was deteriorated,” he said. The Syrian rebels, who were promised U.S. arms, say they feel deserted by the Americans, adding that they have lost faith and respect for Obama. The White House contends that its threat of a military strike against
revolution during decades in exile. Giap’s wife, who stayed behind with their newborn child, died in a French prison, a personal tragedy that would fuel Giap’s anti-colonial fervour. He returned with Ho to Vietnam’s northern jungles in 1941 to train an army of revolutionary peasant soldiers and co-founded the Viet Minh. Giap’s Maoist-inspired guerrilla tactics -- which stressed the need for popular support, the value of hit-and-run attacks and the will to fight a drawn-out war -- would defeat both the French and the American armies. “Guerrilla war is the war of the broad masses of an economically backward country standing up against a powerfully equipped and well-trained army of aggression,” he wrote in one of several memoirs. “Every inhabitant is a soldier, every village a fortress.” Ho proclaimed his first government on September 2, 1945 and named Giap as his interior minister, army chief and later defence min-
ister. The revolutionaries were forced back into the jungle when French troops reimposed colonial rule after World War II, triggering a nine-year conflict that ended at Dien Bien Phu. “It was the first great defeat for the West,” Giap later said. “It shook the foundations of colonialism and called on people to fight for their freedom - it was the beginning of international civilisation.” Giap remained the army’s commander in chief throughout the ensuing conflict with the Americans and the USbacked South Vietnam regime, which turned into fullscale war from 1965 and claimed the lives of 58,000 Americans and at least three million Vietnamese. The fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975 fuelled his near-mythical status overseas as a master strategist and inspired liberation movements everywhere. “As we grew up in our own struggle, General Giap was one of our national heroes,” South African President
Thabo Mbeki said in 2007. Marginalised in peace Giap’s closeness to “Uncle Ho” and his sometimes arrogant manner would earn the diminutive general powerful enemies, including party chief Le Duan. Giap’s influence faded with Ho’s death in 1969 and he was relegated to the political sidelines after the Communist Party took control of reunified Vietnam in 1975. Five years after the end of the war Giap lost his post as defence minister. He was eased out of the politburo in 1982 and officially left politics in 1991. Still, his status as Vietnam’s greatest living military hero meant he could not be completely silenced as he spent the sunset of his life in a former French villa, a short walk from the mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh. Giap, who had been living in Hanoi’s 108 military hospital for the last three years, is survived by Dang Bich Ha, his wife since 1949, and four children.
UNIteD NAtIONS, OctOber 5 (AP): The United Nations has advice for city planners around the world: Move people closer together. Designing more compact, higher-density cities is key to improving the wellbeing of the world’s burgeoning urban population, said Under-Secretary General Joan Cloas, the executive director of UN Habitat and a former mayor of Barcelona. He said too many cities are characterized by urban sprawl that make it harder for people to get around and get access to basic services, especially in vast slums where the poor live far away from their jobs, medical services and food stores. Growing suburbs, meanwhile, discourage the use of public transportation, biking and walking, which in turns contributes to pollution through reliance on cars. And megacities are encroaching on farm land and environmentally sensitive areas. Clos said the world’s
average urban population density is “extremely low” at an estimated 2,000-3,000 inhabitants per square kilometer. More than 50 percent of the world’s population lives in urban areas, a number that is expected to reach 65 percent within 40 years, Clos said. “It’s a huge transformation in the life experience of a lot of humans. And this requires, political attention, economic attention, social attention,” he said at a news conference ahead of World Habitat Day on Oct. 7. Clos acknowledged the difficulties involved in trying to build high-density city centers and offered no easy solutions. In New York and Hong Kong, high-density comes with some of the world’s highest living costs. But Clos said those are extreme examples. In Europe, he said, the average urban population density is more like 15,000 inhabitants per square kilometer. He said offering affordable housing involves difficult political

‘Military genius, humbler of the West’
General Vo Nguyen Giap
HANOI, OctOber 5 (AFP): General Vo Nguyen Giap, who died Friday aged 102, was considered one of history’s greatest military strategists and was the architect of Vietnam’s stunning battlefield victories against France and the United States. Second only to late revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh as modern Vietnam’s most revered figure, the former history teacher’s first military lesson came from an old encyclopedia entry about the mechanism of a hand grenade. The son of a poor scholar, he went on to defeat Vietnam’s colonial masters in 1954 at Dien Bien Phu, the battle that ended French rule in Indochina and started direct US involvement leading to the Vietnam war. Over the next two decades the founding father of the Vietnam People’s Army, whose guerrilla tactics inspired anti-colonial fighters worldwide, again led his forces to victory with the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. Giap’s brilliance as a strategist places him “in the pantheon of great military leaders” with the Duke of Wellington, Ulysses S. Grant and General Douglas MacArthur, wrote American journalist and author Stanley Karnow. “Unlike them, however, he owed his achievements to innate genius rather than to formal training.” Classroom to battlefield Born on August 25, 1911 in a village in central Quang Binh province, Giap was an admirer of Napoleon and Sun Tzu but did not always appear destined to become a soldier. Fluent in French, he studied political economy in Hanoi before teaching history and literature at a college and working as an underground journalist. A member of the Indochina Communist Party, he fled to China in 1939, where he joined Ho, the enigmatic leader who had planned the

in sheep’s clothing.” Kerry defended the engagement effort, saying the U.S. would not be played for “suckers” by Iran. Tehran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful energy production, while the U.S. and other countries suspect it is aimed at achieving atomic weapons capability. McKinley, the Australian expert, said Syria and the U.S. budget crisis have shaken Australians’ faith in their alliance with Washington. “It means that those who rely on the alliance as the cornerstone of all Australian foreign policy and particularly security policy are less certain — it’s created an element of uncertainty in their calculations,” he said. Running against the tide of concern, leaders in the Philippines are banking on its most important ally to protect it from China’s assertive claims in the South China Sea. Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said Manila still views the U.S. as a dependable ally despite the many challenges it is facing. “We should understand that all nations face some kind of problems, but in terms of our relationship with the United States, she continues to be there when we need her,” Gazmin said. “There’s no change in our feelings,” he said. “Our strategic relationship with the U.S. continues to be healthy. They remain a reliable ally.” But as Cordesman said, “The rhetoric of diplomacy is just wonderful but it almost never describes the reality.”
decisions — perhaps replacing subsidize gasoline with more subsidized housing. Clos said high-density need not be the same as overcrowding. “What cannot be sustained is spontaneous urbanization. When we have spontaneous urbanization instead of welldesigned, high-density cities, we have overcrowding,” he said. “And that is what is happening in the favelas, the slums and other places. Thomas Elmqvist, a Stockholm University professor, said there is opportunity for planning
well-designed cities. Sixtypercent of the world’s land projected to become urban by 2030 has yet to be built, according to a new study titled Cities and Biodiversity Outlook, which involved more than 200 scientists. Elmqvist, the scientific editor of the study, said 25 percent of the world’s protected areas are now within 17 kilometers (11 miles) of urban areas. He said in 10 years, it will be 15 kilometers (9 miles). Clos is the director of UN-Habitat. He spoke Friday ahead of World Habitat Day on Oct. 7.

Assad was what caused the regime to change course and agree to plan reached by Moscow and Washington to hand its chemical weapons over to international inspectors for destruction. That’s a far better outcome than resorting to military action, Obama administration officials insist. Gulf rulers also have grown suddenly uneasy over the U.S. outreach to their regional rival Iran. Bahrain Foreign Minister Sheik Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa said Gulf states “must be in the picture” on any attempts by the U.S. and Iran to open sustained dialogue or reach settlement over Tehran’s nuclear program. He was quoted Tuesday by the London-based Al Hayat newspaper as saying Secretary of State John Kerry has promised to consult with his Gulf “friends” on any significant policy shifts over Iran — a message that suggested Gulf states are worried about being left on the sidelines in potentially history-shaping developments in their region. In response to the new U.S. opening to Iran to deal with its suspected nuclear weapons program, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the U.N. General Assembly that his country remained ready to act alone to prevent Tehran from building a bomb. He indicated a willingness to allow some time for further diplomacy but not much. And he excoriated new Iranian President Hassan Rouhani as a “wolf

Vettel tAkes pole For koreAn GrAnd prix YeONGAM, OctOber 5 (AP): Sebastian Vettel maintained his extraordinary dominance of Formula One on Saturday by claiming pole position for the Korean Grand Prix. The German has now taken pole for three straight races and is aiming for a fourth successive win. He's also chasing a hat trick of wins at the Yeongam circuit, and most importantly, a fourth consecutive F1 championship. Vettel set his pole time early in the final qualifying session, and was able to abort his final flying lap when nearest challenger Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes came up twotenths of a second short in his bid to beat Vettel's time. "I had a very, very good lap in Q3 at my first attempt, and I knew that would be tricky to beat that time myself," Vettel said. "Fortunately the first lap was good enough," he added. "Mercedes was very strong." Hamilton had been the fastest in Friday's practice, but Mercedes
could not improve the car as much overnight as Red Bull did. Still, Hamilton said he was satisfied with second. "I felt I got the most out of the car," the British driver said. "In general it's been a good weekend and I really hope tomorrow we can fight with them (Red Bull)." The positive news for Hamilton, and everyone else who qualified in an even-numbered grid slot, is that the even numbers have the inside line to the first corner, while the odd-numbered places are outside but on the rubbered racing line. Last year it was the inside line which won the short sprint to the single-file first corner. Vettel's teammate Mark Webber qualified in third but carries a ten-grid-place penalty into Sunday's race for hitching a ride back to the pits on Fernando Alonso's Ferrari after the Singapore Grand Prix. He will be demoted to 13th. Lotus' Romain Grosjean qualified fourth but will be promoted to third, ahead of Mercedes' Nico Rosberg and Alonso, who is Vettel's nearest challenger in the title chase but a distant 60 points back after finishing runner-up to the German for three straight races. A fifth-place grid spot was as much as the Spaniard could hope for given Ferrari's consistent lack of quali-
fying pace, but he was bullish about improving on his position on the first lap, where the long straights provide prime overtaking opportunities. "It will be a big opportunity for us," Alonso said. "We will try to attack in Turn 3 and 4." Alonso's teammate Felipe Massa qualified seventh, ahead of the Sauber pair Nico Hulkenberg and Esteban Gutierrez, with Lotus' Kimi Raikkonen in a disappointing 10th, 1.6 seconds off Vettel's time. Given the degree of dominance Vettel has enjoyed since midseason, it appears the chief threat to another win on Sunday will come not from his rivals but the weather. A typhoon is expected to close in on the Korean peninsula on Sunday, and depending on its track and speed, could bring anything from light rain to heavy downpours and strong winds. Even that did not concern Vettel. "It's not a disaster if it starts to rain, we have rain tires in the garage," Vettel said. "They were talking about heavy winds. When I arrived on Wednesday, it was very windy, but it has died down since then and I think the typhoon has changed direction. If we get some rain from the typhoon, it doesn't matter."
Fernando Alonso sees his chance
YeONGAM, OctOber 5 (AP): As down as he was about seeing Sebastian Vettel take yet another pole position at the Korean Grand Prix, Ferrari's Fernando Alonso found consolation in one statistic from Saturday's qualifying session. Alonso sat atop the list of highest speeds recorded at the end of the main straight, and it's that advantage the Spaniard is pinning his hopes on as he looks for his first race win since April. If he can hold or improve on his fifth-place grid position through the first corner, Alonso stands a strong chance of making up more places on the long straights that lead to turns three and four. "It will be a big opportunity for us," Alonso

said. "We will try to attack in T3 and T4." Alonso trails Vettel by 60 points in the championship with six races to go — including Sunday's at the Yeongam circuit — so he needs to capitalize on every opportunity and realistically needs at least a couple of victories if he is to catch the German. Alonso has finished as runner-up to Vettel in the past three races and a repeat on Sunday would all but end his title hopes. It would, though, create some F1 history as never before has one driver finished as runner-up to the same winner in four successive races. For several seasons now the Ferrari has lagged behind the Red Bulls in qualifying, so the 0.8 second deficit to Vettel was no surprise. But the Italian
team has also showed a capacity to significantly narrow that disadvantage in races. "We know we had the weak point in the team and we know we have some other strong points," Alonso said. "With this kind of problem for years, we still fought for the world championship. It's something good we do, but it's true that we are too slow." The possibility of wet weather on Sunday from a typhoon in the region is also a potential wild card for Alonso, as there has been very little wet running this season and it could significantly alter the established order. "If it rains, it's very, very challenging for all of us," Alonso said. "It's a very short time of adaptation we have in case of rain tomorrow."
Internacional fires former Coaching of naga Wrestlers Underway Brazil coach Carlos Dunga
Carlos Dunga. (AP File Photo)
SAO PAULO, OctOber 5 (AP): Internacional fired former Brazil coach Dunga on Friday, a day after the team's fourth loss in a row in the Brazilian league. Club directors for the two-time Copa Libertadores champion made the announcement following a 3-1 defeat against struggling Vasco da Gama in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday. The result left Inter 10th in the 20-team Brazilian league standings, 22 points behind leader Cruzeiro with 13 rounds left. The team won just one of its last six matches and is only seven points clear from relegation zone. "I apolo-
gize to everyone for anything wrong that I might have done," Dunga said in a statement on his website. "I'm not upset, I'm just frustrated that I was not able to give Internacional better results and more titles." Dunga coached Inter in 53 matches, winning 26, drawing 18 and losing nine. He won the Rio Grande do Sul state championship earlier this year. "I leave as the team's coach but I will remain cheering for Internacional. This will never change," the 49-yearold Dunga said. "I thank the athletes for their respect and their loyalty, and I wish them success during the re-
mainder of the season." Dunga's statement was also posted on Internacional's website. Dunga's replacement was yet to be announced. Internacional said the squad will be temporarily led by former goalkeeper Clemer, the team's under-20 coach. Dunga's assistants also left the club. Internacional's next match is at home on Sunday against defending Brazilian champion Fluminense, which is eighth in the standings with the same 34 points as Internacional. Fluminense is ahead because it has more victories. Dunga, whose full name is Carlos Bledorn Verri, left Brazil's national team after it was eliminated by the Netherlands in the quarterfinals of the World Cup in South Africa. A defensive midfielder who captained Brazil when it won the 1994 World Cup in the United States, Dunga had never coached at any level before he took over the national team in 2006. He accepted the Internacional job earlier this year after spending some time away from football.

The NWA President, Neikhrolo Khalo said there is great potential for Naga sportsmen to go international. He made especial mention of disciplines such as wrestling, boxing and archery, which, he feels can reach the Olympics. There is bright future especially for these areas, he noted.

However, he expressed concern that in spite of the immense scope exhibited by the players, there is lack of training hall and facilities in Nagaland. “We are really suffering because of the lack of infrastructure”, he stated. But he expressed gratitude to the 4th NAP Thizama Commander, Vekhosa for allotting their barrack for coaching the players and for extending full support and cooperation, apart from giving accommodation to the players. A member of the NWA
further pointed out they do get financial assistance from the state government in the form of 5 lakhs per year but he said that the cost one time coaching exceeds over 5 lakhs. “We are surviving on the contributions from friends and well wishers”, he said. It may be recalled that the Nagaland Wrestling Association was formally formed in 1969 with W.C Krome as the first president and in the year 2002 got affiliated to the Wrestling Federation of India. It is also
affiliated to the Nagaland Olympics Association. Prior to the year 2002, the team had been confined only to Naga style wrestling but has over the years expanded. In 2007, the NWA also participated in the National Games and won Bronze medal. Apart from this feat, it has further won several other medals from participation in various national and North East championships. More recently, the NWA took part in the Junior Cadets Wrestling at Kanyakumari during June 2013.

Djokovic is currently on his 101st week as the top-ranked player. Berdych pulled out of his semi-final after receiving treatment for an injury with Nadal leading 4-2 in the first set. Nadal had broken the Czech's serve in the fifth game after the pair appeared to be matching each other competitively in the early stages. The world number five told reporters after the match that he suffered a back injury when he reached for a shot. Berdych then praised Nadal's achievement on reclaiming the top spot. "With Rafa, well, just all the credit. It is really inSerena Williams of U.S. waves to the spectators after defeating Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland during the semifinal credibly well done in the whole short time match of the China Open tennis tournament at the National that he has become a number one again," he said. an athlete like him." Nadal was sidelined for the second half of last year with a knee injury and is unbeaten since he crashed out of Wimbledon in the first round in June. The 27-year-old, tipped to eclipse Roger Federer's record of 17 Grand Slam titles, has won 10 ATP World Tour titles in 2013. In Saturday's women's semifinals, world number one Serena Williams powered through her match with Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2, 6-2. The American 32-year-old pulled up injured after appearing uncomfortable in the fourth game of the third set, clutching her back as she walked off court with medical officials. But the brief pause did not result in Williams losing her momentum, as she ruthlessly finished off the third seed in convincing style, breaking serve in the next game before closing in on victory. The top seed in Beijing said she had not picked up any serious injuries during the match. "My back was a little tight from playing a lot so I was just trying to release it," she said. "Its been a little tight all week and it just spasm a bit out there today." Williams will face eighth seed Jelena Jankovic in the final after the Serb defeated Czech Petra Kvitova following an early scare. Jankovic lost the first set on a tie-break, but the world number 11 dominated the following sets, losing only two games to crush Kvitova 6-7 (7/9), 6-1, 6-1. The finals will take place on Sunday.
Mechanics push Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen of Finland and teammate Romain Grosjean of France's car back into their team garage following during the third practice session at the Korean Formula One Grand Prix at the Korean International Circuit in Yeongam on Oct. 5. (AP Photo)
YeONGAM, OctOber 5 (AP): Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen admitted it was his own mistake that caused him to qualify in a lowly ninth place for the Korean Grand Prix. The Finn was 1.6 seconds off the time of poleposition winner Sebastian Vettel in Saturday's qualifying session, with his disappointing grid slot spoiling what he expects to be a better race performance on Sunday with the team's new longer wheelbase. Raikkonen locked up the tires twice on his final flying lap after making a strong start, and those mistakes cost him five grid spots, based on his earlier practice times. "I made a
mistake so I knew the the lap was gone," Raikkonen said. "That's the way it goes sometimes." He was outqualified by teammate Romain Grosjean, who set the fourth-fastest time but will be promoted to third due to a grid penalty for Red Bull's Mark Webber. It was the second major mistake of the weekend for Raikkonen, who is nursing a chronic back injury which flared at the previous race in Singapore. In Friday's opening practice he lost control near the end of the lap and had a heavy side-on collision with a tire barrier. Raikkonen is moving back to Ferrari next season, and since the final talks which
led to that contract signing, he has qualified 11th in Italy, 13th in Singapore and now ninth in Korea. Despite his pending move, and being locked out of Lotus' discussion about next year's car development, Raikkonen insists his motivational levels remain the same. "The fact that I have signed for another team changes nothing, as I'm not interested in just rolling around," Raikkonen said. Lotus' switch to a longer wheelbase did not yield marked improvement in qualifying, but its improved stability under braking and through corners is expected to improve results on Sunday.

Madonna opens up about sexual abuse shortly after arriving in New York at age 19
The
pop legend has opened up about her traumatic ordeal for the first time in nearly two decades, revealing she was sexually abused by a stranger at knifepoint shortly after arriving in New York City from Rochester, Michigan, to pursue her dreams of stardom. Writing in the November issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine, the 55-yearold singer recalls: ‘New York wasn’t everything I thought it would be. It did not welcome me with open arms. The first year, I was held up at gunpoint. Raped on the roof of a building I was dragged up to with a knife in my back.’ The fearless music icon graces the cover of Harper’s Bazaar November issue, opening up about her 30 years of ruling pop in a personal essay that chronicles her childhood, moving to New York and rise to fame. ‘I was defiant. Hell-bent on surviving. On making it. But it was hard and it was lonely, and I had to dare myself every day to keep going,’ the Rochester, Michigan-born singer writes of her first years in Manhattan. ‘If I can’t be daring in my work or the way I live my life, then I don’t really see the point of being on this planet,’ explains the singer, who has hinted that she could be releasing a new album in 2014. But the queen of pop says it wasn’t always so easy. On her teenage years, she
admits most people thought she was ‘strange’. ‘I didn’t have many friends; I might not have had any friends. But it all turned out good in the end, because when you aren’t popular and you don’t have a social life, it gives you more time to focus on your future. Then known as Madonna Louise Ciccone, the signer was just 19 years old when she moved to New York City in 1977 with $35 in her pocket. ‘I was scared s***less and freaked out by the smell of piss and vomit everywhere, especially in the entryway of my third-floor walk-up,’ she recalls. After ten years in the spotlight, she says she ‘began to search for meaning and a real sense of purpose in life.’ She soon discovered Kabbalah in a search for a more spiritual life. But despite her elation and happiness, she admits she had no idea that adopting a child was going to land her in ‘another s*** storm’. ‘I was accused of kidnapping, child trafficking, using my celebrity muscle to jump ahead in the line, bribing government officials, witchcraft, you name it. Certainly I had done something illegal!’ A decade later she is divorced with four children and lives in the city where she suffered that brutal attack all those years ago. Madonna wraps up the tell-all essay by revealing the valuable lessons she learned over the years, “One of the many things I learned from all of this: If you aren’t willing to fight for what you believe in, then don’t even enter the ring”.

Elton John’s music has been branded ‘’the devil’s work’’ by a Russian Islamic imam calling for a ban on his Moscow and Kazan concerts in December. The openly homosexual singer came under fire from the religious leader, who has appealed to fans to boycott the star’s concert after he spoke out about the country’s anti-gay laws banning the promotion of homosexuality. Imam Seidzhagfar Lutfulli - who is from Russia’s predominantly Muslim Tartarstan region - criticised Elton’s marriage to husband David Furnish and warned that concert-goers would be punished by God, in statements made public on Thursday. He fumed ‘’Sodomy ... is what the world famous homosexual Elton John, who
recently wed a man in public, is promoting. ‘’Divine retribution for taking part in a hotbed of sodomy will fall both on those who attend the concert and those who perform there.’’ Elton is a firm supporter of gay rights, and previously said he would defend the cause during his Russian tour, an offence which could see him jailed for 15 days in prison and slapped with 5,000 roubles ($150) fine. Just last week, the 66-year-old musician was targeted by another Russian religious group, the Christian group Union of Orthodox Brotherhoods, who also wanted the upcoming gigs axed.

Jackman had a pleasant surprise on the red carpet at the Zurich Film Festival in Switzerland when he learned one of the reporters interviewing him was a former student of his. The movie star was Rollo Ross’ sports teacher at a school in London and Jackman found it difficult to concentrate on his questions about new film Prisoners when he recognised him. He said, I’m sorry mate, we go way back. I used to teach you in high school... and I want to know how your physical education is progressing, it’s very important to me. Jackman then grabbed the Tv camera and turned it on his interviewer. He added, How is your education going Did I set you up for life.

told us that the man first contacted John a month ago and the actor initially brushed off the insistent phone calls as the overtures of a fan. But the man has become a nuisance for John over the past month. He started by calling and saying that he wants to meet John, said the friend. When we asked if these phone calls ever got lewd, the friend replied, No. The caller never said anything objectionable. After the constant barrage of phone calls, the actor finally decided to confront the man but when John finally got on the line and told him, ‘I am John Abraham,’ the caller refused to believe him. Continued the friend, “The situation got worse after that. John started getting calls from the person on his land line number. His assistants too were not spared and then he crossed all limits when he started calling up John’s parents. At this point he was calling several times a day”. But the last straw came when the man called up John’s staff and let them know that he was keeping a constant eye on the actor’s whereabouts. That was the flashpoint for the 40-year-old star. John was in for a shock because this person knew exactly what he was doing throughout the day. He decided to not take it anymore. How dare did the man call up his parents? Enough was enough, and John called his manager and asked him to notify the cops, revealed the friend.

Tamara Mellon on how she never got recognition for HER covetable heels

Mellon has told how her business partner, Jimmy Choo did not design a single shoe for the multi-million dollar brand named after him. During an interview this morning on the Today show, the 46-year-old revealed that she never received a sketch from him during the years they worked together; ‘Not one’, she clarified. Unaware of Mr Choo’s lack of design nous when they joined forces, she said that she had to quickly hone her skills and use experience from her fashion writing days to guide her. Ms Mellon, who worked at British Vogue for five years soon after dropping out of school, said: ‘The original idea was for Jimmy to design the collection and I would run the operations of the business. ‘But it soon became very clear that Jimmy’s skill was in making shoes. He’s a cobbler.’ In her new memoir, In My Shoes, the mother-of-one reveals how she turned to Mr Choo’s niece, Sandra Choi for help. While she would come up with the ideas, Ms Choi would sketch them out and the two of them would go to vintage stores along Portobello Road in London, to look for inspiration. Her creations soon became a hit with Alisters, including Victoria Beckham and Princess Diana, and in 1998 a pair made their way into the script of Sex And The City - turning Jimmy Choo into a household name overnight. However, it was Mr Choo who went on to gain global recognition, not Ms Mellon. Noting her increasing bitterness about the situation, she writes in another part of her book: ‘By the end of 2000, Jimmy Choo was turning a profit of around £3 million a year. ‘We had our own London boutique and were represented at 450 more stores, including Harrods and Selfridges. ‘To top it off, we’d won a British Fashion Council Award, which Jimmy insisted on accepting on our behalf, even though his design contribution had been nil.’ Today, armed with a wealth of business experience, she gearing up for the launch her own namesake label this fall. The Tamara Mellon line will be carried online at tamaramellon.com and at stand-alone stores landing in New York, where she is based with her daughter ‘Minty’, in November and London by 2014. In her memoir, she attributes her success and determination to a childhood that revolved around a difficult relationship with her mother and unwavering support from her father.

sporting Clube edge out lajong 1-0
SHiLLONG, OCTObER 5 (MExN): Sporting Clube De Goa edged out hosts Shillong Lajong FC by a solitary goal in a thrilling 3rd round Airtel I-League encounter at the JN Stadium, Shillong. The Flaming Oranje were able to maintain their unbeaten streak against the Reds, courtesy a Kalou Ogba header in the first half off a well taken corner. The match started on a slow pace, both teams approaching cautiously. But as the game progressed, the visitors started to dominate play with well calculated counter attacks. Meanwhile, Taisuke Matsugae was substituted by Subhash Singh in the 36th minute. It was in the 40th minute, when Lajong conceded a corner. Kalou did not miss the opportunity, raising high to head in the corner beyond the reach of Vinay Singh. On the back foot, the Reds then pushed forward for the equaliser even as the first half drew to a close with a Boithang Hoakip free kick. The shot however could kiss the only woodwork. The second half was more aggressive as both teams went on the offensive. Egged on by their “Lajong Faithfuls”, Lajong displayed some beautiful football, but could not find the elusive equaliser. Thangboi Singto then brought on Tuboi, who replaced Cornell Glen in search of the equaliser in the 66th minute of the match. The man from Manipur almost made a telling contribution, but his shot went wide. Lajong came agonisingly close yet again, when Subhash nearly scored off a swift counter. The dying minutes of the match was a see-saw battle to keep the ball, but Sporting prevailed.

City penalty ClinChes win Manchester City beat everton 3-1 in premier league
MANCHESTER, OCTObER 5 (AP): Manchester City ended Everton's unbeaten run in the Premier League this season with a 3-1 win on Saturday as Alvaro Negredo and Sergio Aguero scored superb goals in an entertaining game featuring plenty of chances. City bounced back from two consecutive losses in all competitions to move two points behind league leader Arsenal, which has a game in hand. Romelu Lukaku gave the visitors the lead but Negredo quickly canceled out the Belgian striker's opener after a flowing collective move before Aguero handed City the advantage just before halftime. Aguero then added the third from the spot in the 69th minute after Tim Howard tipped his penalty onto the post but the ball bounced in off the American goalkeeper. Everton, which was the only team to remain unbeaten before the game, matched City's pace early in the game but quickly faded after the interval. Criticized for his recent mistakes both with his club and England, goalkeeper Joe Hart kept his place in the starting lineup even though City manager Manuel Pellegrini made several changes to his side, with Pablo Zabaleta, Joleon Lescott, Aleksandar Kolarov, David Silva, James Milner and Alvaro Negredo coming in. Everton got off to a strong start and looked dangerous immediately as Lukaku threatened City's defense at the conclusion of his team's first move. Fresh from consecutive

losses against Aston Villa and Bayern Munich, City had its first real opportunity in the seventh minute after a soft free kick was given against Phil Jagielka for a foul on Sergio Aguero, but Aleksandar Kolarov's curled shot went inches wide. Kolarov missed the target again a few minutes later when he sent his header from a corner over
the bar before Hart diverted a fine effort from Lukaku in the 15th minute. Lukau then made the most of City's poor defending as he beat the offside trap to open the scoring after skipping past Lescott and sliding the ball under Hart. ute when Negredo scored a goal similar to Lukaku's from Yaya Toure's excellent through pass. The game continued in a fast pace with both teams combining well from end to end. City had another great chance in the 26th minute when Fernandinho and Silva managed to open some space for Aguero in front of goal, only for the striker
to bend the ball wide at the far post. Aguero could again have given City the lead after Negredo opened up the Toffees defense but completely missed the ball in the 39th. The Argentine player finally made amends for all his wasted chances when he fired in David Silva's pass past Howard from a tight angle in the 45th minute.
LONDON, OCTObER 5 (AGENCiES): Liverpool moved to the top of the Premier League table with a comfortable 3-1 win over Crystal Palace at Anfield. Liverpool began in fine style and took the lead just 14 minutes in when Luis Suarez managed to sweep the ball home from 12 yards despite being surrounded by defenders. Just moments later and Daniel Sturridge kept up his brilliant start to the new season when firing home after turning Damien Delaney inside-out. The third, just before the break, was somewhat harsh on Palace as Dean Moxey was adjudged to have pulled Raheem Sterling back just inside the back and skipper Steven Gerrard made no mistake to slot him his 99th Premier League goal for Liverpool. Palace did improve after the break and they claimed a goal with 15 minutes left as Dwight Gayle flicked home Jose Campana's free-kick from close-range - but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation. The win takes Liverpool above Arsenal into top spot, whilst Palace remain second from bottom after their sixth defeat of the season. The match again underlined the fact that Liverpool now possess one of the most dangerous frontlines anywhere in Europe. Individually their statistics are formidable, together they are devastating. Suarez has 19 goals in his last 22 games, while Sturridge has 19 in 24 games since joining in January, including eight in nine matches this season.

Champs Barak humbled by newbie Veda FC KOHiMA, OCTObER 5 (MExN): A first-half injury time goal by Rhitso Mero ensured debutants Veda FC continue their dream run with a 1-0 victory over defending league champions Barak FC on Matchday 4 of the NPL at Kohima on Saturday. The win will be a morale booster for Veda ahead of Wednesday’s derby against local rivals Kohima Komets who are just three points behind them with a match in hand. Despite the soggy ground conditions at the IG stadium, Barak FC displayed why they are the defending champions with brilliant set pieces. Veda FC, on the other hand, relentlessly threatened the Barak defence with Rhitso Mero and Khwethelhi Thopi making great runs into the opposition half but failing to convert. The first half definitely belonged to Veda FC, who capitalised on their ball possession with an injury time goal. After the break, Barak tried to restore parity right from the start but the Veda defence managed to hold on to the lead. The best chance for Barak came in the 63rd minute after Veda FC keeper Vekuto was left stranded following a goal-mouth melee, only for the ball to hit a defender. The final minutes of the match saw tense moments as tempers rose between members of both the teams. An evenly contested match, nonetheless, Barak FC will be looking to get back to winning ways after two straight losses ahead of their next outing against Zonipang SA on home turf. It was a much needed morale booster for the Kohima outfit ahead of Wednesday’s derby against Veda FC. For Dynamic, it was a gritty show from a young and talented side. In a fast paced match, the first half saw both the teams equally poised and threatening to take the lead.
