In what could be seen as a significant development which could give a more concrete shape towards the full-fledged formation of the Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC), leaders of the constituent units of NTC, Central Nagaland Tribal Council (CNTC) and Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization (ENPO) attended the celebration of Tuluni festival at Khehokhu village near Dimapur. The festival was hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Hokiye Yepthomi

GB of Khehokhu village. Hokiye is also the President of Western Sumi Hoho. The celebration saw in attendance a galaxy of leaders mostly the Presidents and office bearers of CNTC, ENPO, Ao Senso Telongjem Dimapur, Lotha Hoho Dimapur, Chakhesang Public Organization, Konyak Union, Phom People’s Council, Khiamniungan Tribal Council, Yimchunger Tribal Council, United Sangtam Likhum Bumji, Chang Khulei Setshang, Kuki Inpi, Sumi Hoho and Western Sumi Hoho. It was learnt that representatives

of Angami Public Organization were also in touch with the host but could not attend the celebration. NTC Convenor, Pius Lotha said the celebration of Tuluni at Khehokhu has become a “very auspicious occasion” as representatives of all the tribes of Nagaland were present. He said that the NTC was formed to protect the Nagas of Nagaland following the inclusion of a tribe from Manipur as a recognized tribe in Nagaland. He pointed out that Nagaland state was on the verge of attaining 50 years of statehood but regretted

that Nagas have not been able to understand each other and said Naga society has been “sickened.” Stating that there was relative peace in the state prior to statehood, Pius lamented that the Nagas today were directionless. “The demand for sovereignty and integration has been rejected by the Government of India. Now, what next?” Pius queried and said it was the time for Nagas to rise up. He said the objective of the NTC was also to give shape to the directionless stage of the Naga society today. “Our aim is also to clean the floor of Nagaland tribes and bring about understanding,” he said. He was optimistic that through forgiveness, reconciliation could be brought about among the tribes of Nagaland. ENPO Advisor and Parliamentary Secretary for Fire Brigade, Relief & Rehabilitation, Powang reminded of the “Unity first, Solution second” slogan started by the ENPO but that other tribes had taken exception to it. DIMAPUR, JULY 6 (MExN): The ruling Naga Peoples Front (NPF) has responded to the several allegations made by the Opposition Congress by pointing out that “sound political ideology, good governance, genuine development and acceptable leadership” was responsible for the party returning to power for the third consecutive time. A press note from the NPF Press & Media Bureau also stated that the Congress had no moral right to speak of transparency and corruption when it runs a Central government that has been judged by the country as the most corrupt ever. “Scams like the 2G scam, the helicopter scam, the commonwealth games scam and the coal scam are just a few examples of how the country’s resources and money is being looted. Money from these scams must have also reached Nagaland during the elections,

‘Financial health of State is safe & secure’

The ruling NPF has dismissed the allegations about the financial bankruptcy of the State. A press note from the NPF Press and Media Bureau has assured people that the financial health of the State is safe and secure, and it is monitored by the RBI and the Government of India, and there is absolutely no cause of alarm. “There is no question of salaries, pensions and medical reimbursements not being paid, as all functioning of the State’s machineries are running smoothly”.

but the Congress must realise that Nagas cannot be purchased”, the NPF stated. Pointing out that the Congress party’s constant harping on use of money in elections by the NPF did not hold any water, the NPF stated that the Congress President had himself admitted that the high command had sent money to Congress candidates to the scale which was never before done. “Money from Delhi and from neighboring Congress ruled states was poured into Nagaland to destroy the NPF, but the Naga peo-

ple held firm and stood by a party that voices the desire of all Nagas”. The NPF has alleged that money was shifted in from neighboring states, through union ministers and central leaders including the Arunachal Chief Minister, to all corners of the State, and the Central forces were misused to favour the Congress party, “but sound political ideology, good governance, genuine development and acceptable leadership was the winner in the highest court of democracy”. Poultry ban to continue till syndicate destroyed, dealers arrested

DIMAPUR, JULY 6 (MExN): The Dimapur Naga Students Union (DNSU) made it clear that unless the poultry syndicate is destroyed and all the dealers arrested and the price of poultry stabilized as per the rates in neighbouring Assam, the DNSU, as per the resolution adopted by ACAUT shall continue to enforce the ban on poultry. This was stated in a press note issued by K. Mhachio Lotha, President and Petevito Nakhro, Speaker of DNSU. According to the press note, during the course of enforcement of the ban, DNSU officials found out that many of the suspected illegal immigrant traders of poultry were openly selling their birds in the market under the patronage of Nagas. DNSU has reminded all concerned that instead of patronizing certain groups for petty gains, everyone should strengthen the hands of ACAUT in its endeavour to streamline unabated taxation in Dimapur. Anyone, both ‘protectors’ and traders shall be dealt with firmly if found violating the ban, the DNSU stated. DNSU also added that enforcing the ban on poultry was not the prerogative of DNSU, yet, circumstances in Dimapur had warranted that the apex body of students

in Dimapur takes up this job as part of its social responsibility. As such, all the traders are warned to comply with the request. It was mentioned that as an active member of ACAUT, DNSU had been entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the implementation of ban on import and sale of poultry in Dimapur as imposed by ACAUT in its emergency meeting held on 20th June, 2013. According to the press note, the DNSU had warned traders time and again not to violate the ban which has been imposed to protest the formation of poultry syndicate under the patronage of UG organisations. “It’s a fact that the livelihoods of many Naga poultry farmers have been destroyed because of the machinations of illegal-immigrants controlled syndicate; like most of the commodities in Dimapur, it’s the poultry syndicate and not DMC which dictates the pricing of poultry in Dimapur”. Therefore, unless this syndicate is destroyed and all the dealers arrested and the price of poultry stabilized as per the rates in neighbouring Assam, DNSU shall continue to enforce the ban, it stated.

ZPO CAUGHT ON WRONG FOOT

Allegations raised by the President of ZPO on the Rongmei recognition is absolutely baseless, misleading and unfortunate. This is to remind Azu Newmai, President, Zeliang Peoples' organisation and his advocates who are axing the Rongmei, that ZPO had fully endorsed the state government to recognise the Rongmei as a tribe, indigenous to Nagaland State. The letter expressing No Objection for Rongmei Recognition (reproduced here) was jointly signed by the Azu Newmai as President, and myself, the undersigned as the General Secretary of ZPO, on 6th of September 2010. The same letter is loud arid clear in all terms, "the Zeliang Peoples organisation Nagaland fully acknowledges the presence of Rongmei community in the state of Nagaland particularly in districts of Dimapur and Kohima, prior to the formation of the state in 1963. And that the Zeliang Peoples' Organisation Nagaland also has no objection to the recognition of the Rongmei community as "Tribe in the state of Nagaland indigenous to the district of Dimapur and Kohima, though that may be subjected to fulfilling all the conditions and criteria" Now that, Azu Newmai himself has agreed upon the precondition of the cut off date for identifying the eligible Rongmei inhabitants of Nagaland state as 1963, the time when Peren was a subdivision under the Kohima district. Migration of the families from Dimapur to Peren had taken place prior to 2003, the year in which the Peren was separated from Kohima to be declared as a separate district. ZPO and its President, N. Azu Newmai, should not hide his own commitments and should refrain from twisting the facts to confuse the Zeliangrong people in particular and the Nagas in general. The crusade against Rongmei community is nothing more than a prejudiced and personalized drive and the Zeliangrong community should not be victimized for his ulterior motives. On one hand the ZPO has recommended for recognition of Rongmei in Nagaland and on the other hand he is accusing the Govt. for its action based on the Notification of 1977. It is the people to judge whether he is seeking justice or fooling the people. (HAIGAM KAURING) Former General Secretary, Zeliang Peoples' Organisation, Nagaland

Outgoing governor willing to be mediator for Assam-M'laya dispute ShILLONG, JuLy 6 (NNN): Outgoing Meghalaya Governor RS Mooshahary indicated his willingness to don the role of a “mediator” between Meghalaya and Assam to resolve decades old boundary dispute between the two neighbouring states. Just before his departure to Guwahati along with his family members from the Shillong Raj Bhavan on Saturday morning, Mooshahary told reporters that he is willing to be a mediator between the two neighbouring states to resolve the boundary issue which has been eluding solution for almost four decades. Officially Mooshahary will be demitting office of the Meghalaya Governor on July 8 afternoon once the Governor designate Krishan Kant Paul is sworn in by Meghalaya high court chief justice T Meena Kumari. Answering a query on the long pending boundary dispute between Assam and Meghalaya, Mooshahary told reporters, “Why not suggest to them that the outgoing governor should mediate? This is the suggestion I can give you.” Speaking about the cascading effect of the happenings in Assam on other north eastern states, Mooshahary said, Assam is the “mother state” in the region and added, “What happens in Assam has an impact elsewhere. Even now we feel that impact.” Giving an example, Mooshahary said the frequent bandh in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) area, from where he hails, which connects the Northeast to Bengal and the rest of India affects the entire region. On last count, he informed there were up to 90 bandhs in a year. Speaking about the effectiveness of introducing ILP to combat influx and Retail

entry of illegal migrants into Meghalaya, Mooshahary said that ILP had been tested earlier but failed. Saying that Meghalaya already has an inbuilt system of the land tenure system in place to ensure that outsiders do not get the opportunity to buy land and settle here permanently, he said that those whocometothestatearehere to work either in the mines or do business. Besides that they cannot change the demographic as they cannot buy land and settle here, he said. He felt that ILP will only breed corruption and expressed that if officials of the state and district councils are honest, influx can be controlled with the present mechanism available. On the law and order situation, Mooshahary, however, said he is worried about the insurgency problem in Garo Hills and the rise of crimes against women. He said, “There are certain things that I am little worried especially the situation in Garo hills. When I came here, it had showed some improvement, but after sometime, it again became serious.” Mooshhary also said that the increase in crimes against women where the number of rape cases have been reported is serious concern. “Unfortunately, most of these crimes have been committed by the relatives of the victims. This is a trend that needs to be checked by the civil society and by the members of the family. Police alone cannot check these types of crimes.” Mooshahary’s parting advice to the Meghalaya government, was that, its primary duty is to govern, and that too, to govern effectively in order to make it difficult for people to do wrong, and to make it easy for people to do right.

Freedom of speech: a concern for all Nagas within and without Nagaland

With special references to Thepfulhouvi Solo’s & others Dr.inakhe Sumi ( Rtd. Director h&FW nagaland)

I am an avid reader of Thepfulhouvi Solo’s writings, and often in the past was annoyed by them– luckily we crossed each other only twice! Down memory lane, he has matured and awakening the empty minds of our nagas. I have much respect for his wisdom and uncanny ways of digging knowledge. To me he is a nugget of intellectual wanting to promote naga IQs. Encore Senior, with wisdom. I also appreciate the MIP/GPRN who gave him ( 3 in particular) a good reprimand in the media as an expression of their displeasure. This is a mature and healthy method – not by guns please. Live and let live. So much talk for the saying but where are we ? Everyone is talking NAGALAND without much a do. By now Nagaland State should have been a land of paradise filled with charming folks, melodious life style with judicious benefits of resources ( natural or gifts of GOI). Our religious weapons, polished in faith, walking the path of righteousness, beaming with Christlike composition; but here we are in reality, cooking Nagaland as a cauldron of strife. How painful. And yes, Nagaland a speck in the Atlas; how pompious can we get. It seems our head and body is disconnected – head in the heavens and body in the rungkhung, just like our life styles of hi-fi living in the open but goes back to our miserable home of pain and barbarism. We talk and live a venomous life ( either by tongue or gun). Alas, we must conclude that Nagas have not achieved the test of time what they call it “civilization”. This 12 lettered word is a matter of compact pro- gression of history to fine tune

to set the record straight, the Rongmei Council Nagaland takes this opportunity to present a brief account of the Rongmei settlement in Nagaland for perusal of all the right thinking citizens. The Rongmeis have settled in the erstwhile Naga Hills district as early as the First World War. However, it was only in the year 1937 that Ragailong Village (formerly known as Kabul Basti in the Govt. record) was established at Fullerganj Bazaar, the present New Market, Dimapur. Tangnajeilong, now called Zeliangrong village, at Dhobinala, Dimapur was established by Shri Mobipou Kabui in the plot of land allotted by Shri S.J. Duncan, then Deputy Commissioner, Naga Hills vide Memo No; 119681G, dated Kohima 3/1/50. Namgalong which was earlier known as Burma Camp Basti was established in 1947 vide memo no. 8955/G dated Kohima, the 12th November, 1947 signed by Shri A kevichusa for DC Naga Hills. Consequently, the then government appointed Shri Jaikhulung Kabul as Gaon Bura of Kabui Basti vide Deputy Commissioner Kohima Order No. IV/10/3835-38 dated the 19th December 1958. Thereafter, Shri Pauchalei Kabul was also appointed as Gaon Bura of Burma Camp Basti vide D.C. Kohima Order No. IV/10/part/58-59, dated the 27th February, 1959. In Kohima, some Rongmeis arrived in 1920s and settled at Mechozou (Nagabazar) with the permission and blessing of the then Tsutuonuomia khel elders. Besides, some Rongmeis whose names or their parents were enlisted in the E-Roll 1963 under Dinnapur and Kohima, later migrated to Peren where they settled permanently. When the first Electoral Roll of newly attained Nagaland statehood was published in 5th December 1963, Rongmeis, formerly known as Kabul Naga, were enumerated in Dimapur and Kohima. Based on this E-Roll, the Government of Nagaland undertook a series of enumeration and verification spanning almost Recently much has been written on the Recognition 5 years and thereafter a total of only 1313 Rongmeis was of Rongmei as an indigenous Naga tribe of Nagaland and declared as indigenous of Nagaland state.

humanity through the Ages. However, though the age of time has been a flitting moment of 65 plus years only, we Nagas have magical / miracle booster civilizer - in religion. This religion is the genome of human civilization. Shall we live upto it? And why not. We have the roadmap of biblical Genesis to Revelation; compassed by the Ecclesiastes; dictated by the law of 10 Commandments; trained ‘ hands on’ by Jesus Christ in Leadership, Seminars, conferences, Workshops, campings, during His life time; culminating in the supreme laboratory demonstration of His death on the Cross to set us free for ever. Nagas may not live a life of 7 blind people defining the elephant. What elders say ‘ call spade a spade’. If I want to talk Nagas of Nagaland or You want to talk Nagas of Naga it is an expression through freedom of speech – democratically. If not there will be no mind set progress. Let the few who have taken the order of expression share with the rest. But yes in historical conjectures, it should not be a subjective and emotional expression. It must be objective and promote unity and progress as we all know Nagas of Nagaland are terribly divided unintentionally. Let not history find us a bluffer. As a tribute to all the writers, carry on and of course expect a rebuff from opposition- through the pen! Many fantastic writers are still to wake up. And so God bless “our” Nagaland, land that “we” love. Food for thought: If Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was a Naga; he would have pressed the atom bomb button long long time ago as revenge to all the slanders he got! I think he is not a Naga!

Press Release: Rongmei Council Nagaland

Bangalore, July 6 (PTI): Steep rise in prices of fruits and vegetables have forced over 55 per cent of middle and low income groups to switch over to precooked and ready-to-eat food items to keep the kitchen budget intact, says a survey by industry body Assocham. Fear of bad monsoon has suddenly pushed up prices of vegetables and fruits by 300 per cent “from the farm to your dining table,” the survey on ‘rising prices of fruits and vegetables’ said. Over 88 per cent of middle income group and lower income group find difficult to manage the household budget and are squeezing families’ finances to the lowest level due to uncertainty of rains, said the country-wide survey conducted under the aegis of Assocham Social Development Foundation covering over 5,000 people. During the last three years, the salary of average common man has gone up by 10-

Several memorandums have been submitted in the past years to varied chief ministers of Nagaland. In 1981, a memorandum was submitted to the then chief minister J.B. Jasokie for the recognition of Rongmei as Naga inhabitant tribe of Nagaland. During Dr. S c Jamir’s chief ministership, a series of memorandum was also submitted. Even late Dr. Hokishe Sema, former chief minister and DAN chairman also submitted individually a petition to Shri Neiphiu Rio, the Hon’ble Chief Minister on 13th April 2003 on behalf of the aggrieved Rongmei people who settled in Nagaland prior to 1963. The Rongmei Council Nagaland expresses gratitude to the Government of Nagaland for granting a status as one of the Naga tribes of Nagaland vide Notification No. HOME/SCTA-6/2007, dated 4th August 2012 and also assures the government that it will extend all support and co¬operation in the matter mentioned in the notification through Chief Secretary whereby it states, “Scheduled Tribe Certificate and Indigenous Tribe Certificate should be issued to only for those members of the Rongmei tribe who or whose ancestors’ names were enumerated in the 1963 electoral roll of the State of Nagaland and whose names were enumerated in the report dated 31st May’ 2012 of the Committee set up by the State Government”. Rongmei Council Nagaland and its people also extend gratitude and appreciation to Naga Hoho, Naga Council Dimapur, Kohima Village T-Khel, Zeliangrong Baudi Nagaland, Zeme Council Nagaland, Liangmei Council Nagaland, Zeliangrong Students Union Nagaland and Zeliang Peoples’ Organization Dimapur for their recommendations and supports towards the recognition of Rongmei tribe in Nagaland. In conclusion, the Rongmei Council Nagaland appeals to the fellow Naga brethren to be sympathetic and understand the genuine case of the Rongmeis who have settled in Nagaland prior to statehood.

15 per cent but on the other side the prices of vegetables have also gone up by 250300 per cent, it added. The survey was conducted in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Pune, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Bengaluru and other places. The maximum impact was felt in major cities like Delhi (first), Mumbai (second), Ahmedabad (third), Kolkata (fourth), Chennai (fifth), Hyderabad (sixth) and Pune (seventh). Around 82 per cent of lower middle class families have been forced to skip or squeezed their budgets for vegetables. The prices of most of the widely consumed vegetables have shot up during the last two weeks in most parts of the country with the early onset of monsoon rains, seriously hitting the common man mainly in the metro cities, D.S Rawat, Secretary General, Assocham said releasing the survey.

The Union appealed to the law enforcing agencies to bring the “diabolic culprits” to book at the earliest. “Such barbaric and heinous crimes against women find no place in Naga society,” it added. “To add insult to injury, the Union is further shocked and appalled to learn that MMS of the victim is being circulated and gone viral by certain sections of the public who should hang their heads in shame.” It further said, “In their action they equate themselves with the same sick mentality as the perpetrators.” Naga Council has expressed shock over the July 4 murder and suspected rape of a woman in Dimapur. It expressed confidence that police will sooner or later zero in on the culprits, but however questioned “whether our courts are objective enough to go for retributive justice and impose death penalty on the guilty people?” Stating that the judiciary in Nagaland has been below-par in its performance, it said, “We’re witness to numerous cases where common criminals, extortionists, kidnappers, killers, etc., get bail easily due to liberal interpretation of

the coffin of the Congress. It has exposed the fact that the Congress leaders in Nagaland are the real hurdles behind the achieving development and progress in Nagaland”, stated the NPF. By telling Delhi not to give any more funds to Nagaland, the NPF stated that this showed that the Congress cared only for themselves, and not for the people. “Is this a constructive opposition? Is this the quality expected of a leader, who assured his constituency that he would become Chief Minister?” it questioned while adding that “such a leader with such a twisted logic and ideology is today leading the Congress in Nagaland”. The NPF also argued that the funds that we get from the Centre does not belong to the Congress and is actually “our right as it is our share of central taxes and the Congress leader should not tell Delhi not to give the Nagas what is our right”. Pointing out that the tussle for leadership and oneupmanship has become the benchmark of the Congress; the NPF termed this as the “real truth about the Congress and its leadership in Nagaland, about a party that has lost all moral right to represent the people of Nagaland”. In fact the NPF was of the view that after the crushing defeat in the recently held assembly polls, the Congress in Nagaland has lost all moral authority to even play the role of an opposition and adding that the leader of the Congress Legislature Party has already lost the status of Leader of Opposition in the Assembly. Also stating that the “blatant a lie of the Congress and the constant barking against the NPF is standard fare”, the NPF reminded the Congress that “people had already rejected the stand, ideology, statements and baseless allegations of the Congress through their vote”.

Powang, who was instrumental in formation of the Joint Co-ordination Committee comprised of the Sumi Hoho and ENPO in 2008, said the Nagas should waste no time in dousing off the flame of fratricidal killings and control the fire from spreading further. He said Nagas should also be ashamed of neighbouring states for the incessant factional killings. Powang appealed the Nagas not to create tribal issues out of accidental and unintentional happenings. Host of the Tuluni festival, Hokiye Yepthomi expressed the hope that Naga reconciliation and unity would be strengthened even as Tuluni festival was being celebrated. On behalf of the Western Sumis in particular and Sumi community in general, Hokiye appealed for forgiveness, in the name of Tuluni, from the Nagas for any wrong that the Sumis might have committed. Executive Secretary WSBAK, Rev. Vitoshe Swu shared the word of God with the gathering during the programme. A cultural performance was presented by the Khehokhu Village Youth Department.

THE MORUNG EXPRESS

AS I USED TO IMAGINE Doctors: Working for Money or to Save Life? LEADERSHIP IS NOT TITLE

S Varah movement fired to a defined goal, if at all to be kept aflame, must be dependent on leadership and fellowship. Loyal and relentless team members founded to adopt an ideology unfailingly guarantee success not from the leader but through the leader. Thiswhen wrongly conceived---as is often the case with the Naga movement---resulted to producing critical spectators who, along with passing phase of time, revoltingly turn clever counterfeits or figure monuments; a leader, in other word, become nothing more than a committee of one. This elementally phenomenon in Naga has generated revulsion,in no lesser gravity, sordid and as offensive as those that of the oppressive military actions perpetrated. Personal integrity considered as key element, among others, to qualify a leader and the claim that the mission the Naga are commissioned, to be Christ’s and their Land as His, should not mean temperance alone; it should be ‘incorruptibility’ in a Naga revolutionary’s life to announce his/her message clear to others by living one’s vision. Goal and direction both extend from a vision. Without a very clear direction or goal, an Order such as the Naga’s will deteriorate and splash. At best it will become a social club, and worst, it is dangerously prone to direction of others within the group and become nomadic, wondering in circles and giving an emphasis on one today and focusing on another tomorrow. Directionless, isn’t this lost at sea for ultimate shipwreck?“Vision”, according to George Barna.“is never maintaining the status quo. Vision is about stretching reality to extend beyond the existing state”. Vision itself must be clearly pronounced and communicated, even while the detailed parts of it may be negotiable. The principle of action that modifies the character, governs the impulses, controls the passions, subdues enmity, elevates and ennobles a leader, does not spring from motivation, driven by self-promotion; a leader is called. “I can offer you”, Winston Churchill said, “only blood, sweat, toil and tears.” How did Britain respond? Never to give up! Incessant bombings, rocket at-

A

tacks and of course, the Battle of Britain!Churchill’s vision is not of what is,but of what is to become. People in his time knew him, loved him and aligned with his vision. He was followed. In an age of cynicism and doubt in matter of leadership and leading, Naga people have become so predisposed to auditing---as they have been betrayed, and more often than not---attributes of a leader. Not perfectly but humanly, including falling, failure, admitting failure and, of course, learning from it, should be our back subject for both leaders and followers. We are negotiating with a powerful political structure and an economic giant. Commitment and assurance given either by congress led coalition or any so-called popular ministry in the centre will be perfidious and, understandably, dodging responsibility when serious resolution is to be adopted between the Naga people and the government of India. In spite of being grounded on heap of historical merits, GOI will never crawl into the shoes of the Naga and observe perspectives to critically assume seriousness while brokering ‘just peace’. We have come this far; we simply shrug to think when our homespun problems seem to tempt us to go back; and being on this intersecting roads, we often turn to look around forsupporters and a worthy leader. And right there, the sound of print media, electronic media noises and other voices blaring, weare so susceptible todrifting. Our penchantfor headship in the past is often blamed for the present brokenness. We do know our past was made up of different time and situation conditioning the leaders to merit their understanding of what would come to pass. And that has gotten us to both regret and gratitude. Nevertheless,we have not said---and afraid to say---as to who did make a wrong decision impacting this present pieces. Admitting mistake committed is, as always interpreted, on the basis of political expediency and blunder. A large and a noble heart subdued by concern for future and his love transcending seemingly indomitable and never negotiable differences will say the ‘sorry’. This noble heart wrapped inside a loving leadercan melt down a rigid status quo to allow new perspective to keep the promise and hope! Oh God, they are so big and we are too small! We need their money and, in return, they demand our absolute obedience but many of us do not want their terms to end this bloody conflict! What shall we do, OMG!

ne of the most honourable professions in the world is to be a medical doctor. They are the ones who save life. They restore smile on many faces by bringing back the life to millions of sick people in the world. By so doing they became the hope and comforter of millions. They sacrifice their life for others. Young and old put their trust on doctors to keep them hale, hearty and healthy. Everyone respects them. They make life possible to continue in the face of epidemic and endemic diseases. They make life beautiful and give meaning to life. They make people happy. We must recognise their contribution to society and work together with them to save life. Humanly speaking, they play the role of God in saving life. However, today, it is unfortunate that many doctors do not take up their duty seriously. Many doctors who are posted in remote villages are not willing to stay and work for the concerned villagers who need them most. They continue to live in towns and cities with their families. While they have big concern for themselves and family members, they do not have much concern for the wellbeing of the villagers. They visit their posting places/villages only from time to time to give their signature. There are some doctors who are alcoholics. This is very dangerous because such doctors may not be able to diagnose the sickness correctly and may prescribe wrong medicine leading to fatal condition of a patient. Drinking wine and saving life cannot go together. It is very difficult to meet doctors at appointed time in government hospitals whereas in private clinics, they are available most of the time. The concerned authority needs to take stern action against those erring doctors in our land. It appears that many doctors do not want to treat the seriously sick persons in government run hospitals for the reason best known to them. Seriously sick

people were sent to private hospital to be treated by the same doctors who sent them from government hospitals. Once a patient landed in private hospitals, doctors get more money but the patient’s expenses increases considerably high. Hence, many patients became heavily indebted and sold their land, forests, properties, and house. Many government hospitals do not have even cotton or syringes or first aid. This is the duty of doctors to inform the concerned authority to provide all the necessary medicines and equipments for hospitals. There are incidents where the supplied medicines (‘not for sale’ medicines) are sold in private clinics. Most of the doctors have their own clinic and spend much of their time working in their clinic rather than staying in their posted-government-hospital. Those who are rich and can pay more money gets proper treatment but poor people are always at the receiving end. Corruption is so rampant in our society that it has penetrated even to the fraternity of medical doctors. If we go to private clinic, we are charged from Rs.200 and above as consultation fee. The time of check-up is usually finished within 5 to 10 minutes. Compare this amount (consultation fee) with that of a farmer’s earning who struggles the whole day but earns between Rs.150 and Rs.200. It’s surprising to note here that 10 minutes’ earning of a doctor is equivalent to 8 hours’ earnings of a farmer in a day! Unimaginable! Unfair! Also Doctors get handsome salary from government apart from private earnings. The earnings of many doctors are beyond reasonable measure/limit. Hardly have we seen a patient bargaining for the price of medicine or consultation fees. Can we say that this kind of accumulation of wealth be also termed as ‘extortion of money’ from the patients? Many of today’s youngsters join MBBS (to become Doctors) primarily for earning money and not for saving life. The ethos of saving life as a prima-

What happened? Mohammed Morsi rose through the ranks of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist movement that was banned for decades, becoming chairman of its political wing, the Freedom and Justice Party. He narrowly won the presidential vote in June 2012, becoming Egypt's first democratically elected president. That election, which was generally considered free and fair, followed a turbulent period of military rule after long-time leader Hosni Mubarak was ousted in February 2011. President Mubarak, who ruled for almost 30 years, was forced from power by large-scale demonstrations. Protesters said they were fed up with high levels of poverty, corruption and unemployment in the Arab world's largest country.

gyptians are reacting to the fast-moving developments in their country, after the army ousted President Mohammed Morsi and put him under house arrest. The top judge of Egypt's Constitutional Court, Adly Mahmud Mansour, has been sworn in as interim leader, saying that fresh elections were "the only way" forward, but gave no indication of when they would be held. Here, Egyptian readers give their reaction to Mr Morsi's removal and their views on what they think should happen next.

Mahmud Mansour. The judiciary will obey the military and do as they say. The military will control Mansour. They will let him take the blame if anything goes wrong. I just don't know what will happen next. I know Morsi will not be president again, but I can't accept any other president."

Ikram Nosshi, Cairo "The atmosphere in Egypt is amazing at the moment. The removal of Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood regime was a must. They divided the country from day one. Morsi proved to be a president for just one sector of the nation and allowed Wahabi Imams and ideas to poison the moderate Egyptian Islam preached and respected by Coptic Christians, such as myself. I am optimistic about the future now. The army have a roadmap for the future in place and things are looking better. I hope there will be a joint effort between different parties. There are many capable people that could be part of the next government. Back in 2011, the atmosphere and sentiment of the revolution was incredible. We were hoping for a better, democratic Egypt. It had nothing to do with religion at the time. Last year, I voted for Ahmed Shafik, but some of my family didn't vote at all. Some families in Egypt became divided by politics. Unfortunately the Muslim Brotherhood and Morsi changed nothing when they got into power. They hijacked the role of the revolution. Egyptians are religious and spiritual by nature. Many took the Muslim Brotherhood as a sign that the country would be run better so they gave Morsi their votes. However, the Muslim Brotherhood took the country in the wrong direction. We've had problems with gas, diesel, electricity and water shortages. What has happened over the past year has been diabolical."

Reem Shalan, Cairo "There were so many people out on the streets on Wednesday night and the atmosphere was so patriotic. There were patriotic songs and fireworks. There were small kids, old men and women, people of all ages and from all backgrounds. A couple of months ago, people were sceptical of the army. However, we have now seen our faith restored. This is not a military coup, as many are saying. Muslims, Coptic Christians, the rebel movement - we all wanted Morsi removed. I voted for Morsi last year because I didn't want anyone like Ahmed Shafik in power, who was related to the old regime. Now I realise that Mubarak's regime and Morsi's are comparable. Neither cared about the country, only power. Morsi was doing everything to benefit the Muslim Brotherhood, but was doing nothing for the people. We didn't feel positive about the effects of the revolution. The poor didn't see any improvements. We thought they would be in a better state one year on and we thought we would have true deWhy did the military act now? mocracy. During Mr Morsi's year in office, he fell out with key institutions and sectors of society, and was seen by many Egyptians as doing little to tackle the country's pressing economic and social problems. Egypt became ever more polarised between Mr Morsi's Islamist supporters and their opponents, including leftists, liberals and secularists. On 30 June 2013 millions took to the streets to mark the first anniversary of the president's inauguration, in a protest organised by the grassroots Tamarod (Rebel) movement. The protests prompted the military to warn President Morsi on 1 July that it would intervene and impose its own "roadmap" if he did not satisfy the public's demands within 48 hours. As the deadline approached, Mr Morsi insisted that he was Egypt's legitimate leader. He warned that any effort to remove him by force could plunge the country into chaos.

ry duty of a doctor is slowly vanishing. Many doctors behave roughly in dealing with patients. Soft spoken words can cure many sicknesses even before giving medicine/treatment. Building trust with patient is a sure way of curing the disease. Psychological comfort can give enormous strength to patients to improve their health condition. Some doctors are so careless in treating the patients especially during operation that it cause to the loss of life. There are many cases where Doctors mishandled their patients especially women. Sexual harassments are reported from many parts of India. There are reports of rape cases by doctors of their patients after making them unconscious by giving intoxicant drugs. There are also many instances where doctors experiment with new medicine through their patients without their knowledge. So often we hear of stealing human organs especially kidney by doctors for trade through which they make huge profit. This is unethical and callous practice. When we get sick, we are completely at the mercy of doctors. Whatever doctors tell us, we obey. Taking advantage of the helpless condition of the patients, many doctors are misusing their patients’ bodies. This is not the way how a good and caring doctor should be. More than any other groups of people, doctors need to possess good moral life. They need to understand that they are co-workers with God in saving life. Everyone (may be high or low in status, literate or illiterate, rich or poor) should be treated with care and everyone’s dignity respected. Be happy when you save a life and not when you get huge amount of money from patients. Money and wealth cannot give lasting peace and happiness. It is when we faithfully do our work and sacrifice our life for others that we find satisfaction in our life. It is of utmost importance that our medical doctors remain truthful to their vocation of saving life. Doctors need God’s knowledge and God’s guiding hand in saving human life. Pray and work with God.

Egypt turmoil: Coup or no coup?

Jonathan Marcus nd if so where does the Egyptian army's ousting of President Mohammed Morsi stand on this scale? Which one was it? In one sense, of course, it is a doubly irrelevant question. Does it matter? For one thing outside countries can do very little about it - even the United States with its much-vaunted ties to the Egyptian military. And in a region as troubled as the Middle East, nobody has the luxury of holding Egypt at arms-length even if they wanted to. Talk about Washington calling into question its financial support for Egypt - and particularly its military - is just that, talk. So at one level the discussion of "a coup, or no coup" is - as one pundit I encountered going into a TV studio this morning rather disparagingly described it - a question for Western commentators to agonise over. Caution But in another important sense it does matter. It has coloured the initial responses of key Western governments - like President Barack Obama, for example, speaking of the US being "deeply concerned" by the Egyptian armed forces' actions. What foreign governments say will be remembered by the Egyptian people, and US policy in the run-up to the military's take-over has prompted strident criticism from both pro- and anti-Morsi camps. This caution has been reflected in British statements too, though Foreign Secretary William Hague put his finger on the problem when he pointed to the dual nature of the events in Egypt. This was, he said "a military intervention in a democratic system," but equally, he said, "it was a popular intervention". Realism So putting these two aspects together, does this then make it a "good coup"? The pragmatic view would be to look to see what emerges from it - and some hard-headed realism is probably in order. The Egyptian military played a key role in politics before President Hosni Mubarak's departure; it stood centre-stage after the upheavals of the Arab Spring; and as this latest crisis demonstrates it has again emerged from its barracks to enforce what it sees as the national interest. The military shadow over Egyptian politics is not going to disappear any time soon. Look how long it took for the Turkish military to be marginalised in Turkish politics. A democratically elected president has certainly been removed from office by the military, and that by anyone's definition sounds like a coup. But again, one set of elections, whatever the popular yearning for change, did not make Egypt a democracy. It was, like so many other countries in the region, on a journey to democracy: establishing new roles for key institutions; creating the representative bodies of civil society; and above all creating the habits of democracy in both people and political leaders. It was - say some analysts - precisely because he himself had not imbibed the democratic habit sufficiently that President Morsi found himself challenged on the streets. By this reasoning this was an atypical coup in a very imperfect democracy. Right or wrong is for the pundits and the historians. Governments in the region and diplomats in the wider world have to deal with the reality of the new Egypt. Questions Everything now depends upon the transition to a renewed democratic order. Western leaders have made it clear that this needs to be speedy, transparent and inclusive. Huge questions remain. How will the Muslim Brotherhood be represented in the new institutions? How much popular support will it have? And, crucially, what message will its Egyptian experience send to similar groups around the region. Will their conclusion be to better burnish their democratic credentials, or to decide that having won an election in Egypt they were simply robbed of power - thus calling into question their whole commitment to democratic politics.

Youth Day 10 Commandments for a Christian Youth NBCC of Prayer- July 7 Fr. Joe Mariadhas

St. Joseph’s College Jakhama - Nagaland

“W

hat happens in our mind will happen in time.” It is the truth of life. Our minds are created by God the Creator for happiness and success. The quality of our lives becomes in proportionate to the hard work and commitment of our purpose. All of us strive to achieve and grow in life. Here are some tips for our youth what could be their role and contribution in the Church today.

1. Be at the feet of the Master– the search for a fuller and deeper personal life with God is a quest of every youth. Purpose and meaning of life with all the challenges of life leaves many of our youth with confusing thoughts over church practices. Jesus guided his disciples to a full, genuine life in loving union with God, the Father through his personal teaching and training. Every youth shall come and be at the feet of the Master to listen to him and to spend time with him, to learn about life and its purpose. Come to Church regularly. 2. Read and Learn– all of us have interest in many things. Some we try to keep it up while other habits die after some time. Reading the Word of God shall be a daily task of every young person who wants to know the will of God in one’s life. Reading Bible will shape the thoughts and the mind shall grow in the Wisdom of God. Love for reading the Word of God can be cultivated from childhood onwards. The Word of God has the captivating power to change the lives of people and set them on the right track. Start reading the Bible from today my young friend.

3. Develop Praying Habits– the link between faith and daily life consist in the relationship we have made with God. We need to develop praying habits that would create in every youth a true and clear conscience accountable and transparent in the eyes of God. Prayers can solve the problems of life when earnestly prayed and surrendered. Learn to pray every moment of Many great personalities have done this to be your life. How to Contend for Revival in Your Region Your love makes you beautiful Sandra Davis Kirk, PH.D.

When John Wesley and friends prayed earnestly for revival in England, God answered their prayers. Find out how you can be part of the next great revival in your nation.

F

lames leapt from the roof of the pastor’s home in Epworth, England. Susanna and Samuel Wesley desperately rounded up their children and counted them, but one was missing. Little 5-year-old John was still in the burning house. Susanna broke into a loud sob. She had already lost 10 of her 19 children before they reached the age of 2, and she couldn’t bear to lose her beloved little John. Just then a neighbor spotted the child, as the boy looked helplessly out the upstairs window. The house was about to burst into uncontrollable flames; but acting quickly, the neighbors made a chain, climbing on each other’s shoulders. Finally, the top man was able to reach out and gather the boy into his arms. Immediately, even as they lowered little John to safety, the whole house exploded into flames, shooting sparks into the midnight sky. For the rest of his life, John Wesley referred to himself as “a brand plucked from the fire” (Zech. 3:2). Because of this near-death experience, he always believed that God had a special calling on his life—a destiny he must fulfill. Inspired by Jonathan Edwards’ description of revival at Northampton just before America’s First Great Awakening, Wesley began to pray that God would

bring revival to England as well. He began joining with his friends and praying earnestly for revival. One night, as Wesley and 60 others prayed all night, suddenly the power of God swept in and broke over all of them. Many of them cried out and others were knocked to the floor by God’s power. Those proper Englishmen were undone by the presence of God; and from that time on, Wesley began seeing mighty manifestations of God’s power. Like the apostle Paul, Wesley “was prepared to strip his message of all that was peripheral and to know nothing among his hearers except Jesus Christ and him crucified.” In fact, Wesley once said, “Give me a hundred men who fear nothing but God, hate nothing but sin and are determined to know nothing among men but Jesus Christ and Him crucified, and I will set the world on fire with them.” This is what we need in America! Where are the preachers like John Wesley who will lift up the torch of the cross until their entire nation is ablaze? Where are those like the Moravians, who will cry, “May the Lamb who was slain receive the reward of His suffering!” until the gospel spreads around the world? Where are those like Evan Roberts, only 26 years old, who will preach, “Calvary’s love and love for Calvary” until an entire nation is changed as in Wales in 1905? Where are those like Jonathan Edwards, who will describe the Father’s cup with such intensity that people will groan for mercy and a Great Wakening will result? We need prophets like John the Baptist who will cry, “Behold the Lamb of God!” until the church is “baptized in the Holy Spirit and fire” (John 1:29; Luke 3:16). We need preachers like Peter who will preach the gospel with such power that people are “cut to the heart” (Acts 2:37). We need apostles like Paul, who will resolve to “preach Christ and Him crucified” (1 Cor. 1:23), until the whole world is turned upside-down. We need visionaries like John who will look into heaven until they

see the slain Lamb on the throne (Rev. 5:6), then will reveal Him down on earth. We need men and women who burn and blaze for the gospel and will never give up preaching the blood of the Lamb. At last the time has come for the Lamb to be glorified in this nation. Won’t you join us in this great cause? This is not just another charismatic bandwagon to jump on. This is not just one more stream in the body of Christ. We are talking about the Son of God—God’s eternal Lamb! He deserves the reward of His suffering. We simply cannot give up until there’s a paradigm shift in the church—a reformation that is driven by arediscovery of the glory of the gospel of Jesus Christ, a resurrection of the cross that is founded on a revelation of the Lamb. “But I’m not a preacher,” you say. “I can’t stand before people and speak.” Neither could Moses or Gideon, but God used them to lead a whole nation. You see, once God consumes your heart with a melting revelation of the Lamb, He will change you into a different person. Once the cross penetrates your soul and fills your heart, you will become pregnant with a message. So I urge you, let the gospel go deep. Let it surge and seethe within you until it does a deep work in your soul. Let it crucify your heart until your selfish ambitions are nailed to the cross. Once the gospel has done its crucifying work in your heart, “shout it from the rooftops” and be a voice for the Lamb to your generation. Let it come from a heart that’s been broken open and spilled out with love for the Lamb. And if the Spirit of God attends your words, people will be undone by a revelation of the Lamb. The Lamb of God was silent, but now it’s no longer time for silence! Adapted from Undone by a Revelation of the Lamb by Sandy Davis Kirk, copyright 2013, published by Creation House. This book will help you see the awesome sacrifice of our Lord in a totally new light. The vivid picture the author paints shows you the Lamb of God before creation, the crucifixion, resurrection, ascension, and glorification in eternity. Set aside everything you think you know about the Cross and be prepared to be undone.

understand How the Devil Works

ou, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. —1 John 4:4 It is wonderful to know that the devil is subject to God's authority. So whenever I sense a satanic attack, I think, Well, that's interesting. But God knows I can take it. The devil can go so far, but only so far. I have discovered too that the devil always attacks me in an area of weakness. But this enables me to strengthen that area, so that the next time around he can't attack me in that place. I grow in grace because the devil attacks, even though satanic attacks are no fun. Learn the secret that every satanic attack is with God's permission and has a purpose. Do you know what Job learned at the very end? It is so thrilling. Job said to the Lord, "I know that ... no plan of yours can be thwarted" (Job 42:2, emphasis added). Indeed, no purpose of God can be threatened because God is more powerful than the devil. There is never emancipation without conflict. But it is always within the scope of God's permission.

Another thing about the devil is that he is the accuser. You see, the devil will come along and accuse you, and he does this because you did the right thing. The devil wants you to feel stupid. Furthermore, the devil is a liar. He will always lie to you. The devil will always make you think that you have done the most foolish thing by following Jesus Christ. This is the way he works. He always makes you think you have done something stupid. Do you want to know how the devil attacks? The devil will use a close relationship to get at you. You would not have thought that the particular person that the devil will use would ever be capable of what they say or do to you. He will play upon the weakness of somebody you trust. The devil will use that to discourage you. I tell you something that we are all learning: we must put our trust in Jesus Christ alone, because even the best of God's people, and sometimes those closest to us, will disappoint us sooner or later. Excerpted from All's Well That Ends Well (Authentic Media, 2005).

L

ove is the centre of all our lives. Every day we talk about love, sing about love, think about love. But what is love anyway? the answer you may give is, “To feel great affection” or” Two people just loving each other”. “Love”, they all say, is a beautiful thing. Most people find it difficult to define what exactly is. Some people always sent up sounding more like self-love than anything else. All of us have some feeling about what love is, but we cannot put them in to words. Love is life. Love motivates you and me to wake up every morning and keep working. Love gives you strength. Love gives you an identity. Are you looking for love? Do you want to be love? Do you want to live in love? Do you want your children and husband to love you? Do you want your friends and neighbors to love you? We seek love everywhere. We demand love from everybody. We want others to love us first. But what about you and I loving others first? To love should be our goal and not to be loved. You cannot be beautiful unless you love others. We say, “I really love him,” I would do anything for him!” No doubt we all say that. But the fact remains that people around us suffer from broken relationships, broken promises and broken hearts. You might have achieved many things in life but they are nothing if you do not posses love. You may be an extremely beautiful woman, you may have all the gifts and abilities that a woman desires but unless you have love you have nothing. Paul has a way with words. He makes

love very important; look at Paul description of love! “If I speak in tongues of men and of angels ,but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing” (1 Corinthians 13:1-3). You can cry without love, you can help someone without love, you can serve someone without love, you can pray without love. But nothing can be compared to doing a little thing with love. There is nothing more heart touching than the love of Jesus reflected in you. Everybody understands the language of love spoken through actions. You do not have to shout it to the people around you to say that you have love but your attitudes and actions will speak the language of love for you. So many volumes of books have been written about love, a lot of discussions have taken place about love. Rock music talks a lot about love. We hear sermon about loving ourselves and others .We are taught by our elders to walk in love. But the more we talk, and we read and hear about love, the more we seem to become harsh, rude, selfish and bitter why? The answer is simple. We fail to perform love because we do not have the love of God. How can others know that we have the love of God? We can show love by both words and deeds. Love is the essence of a Christian woman. Love is the wall that surrounds us, the roof that protects us and the ground that supports us. This love comes from God, who is love? (John 4:8). Every Christian woman should study about love and learn about love. We should seek love and possess love because without love we are nothing. With love you can melt your husband’s heart. With love you can soothe your children’s wounds. With love you can comfort your friends and other needy people around you. Is this love possible? Yes, this love is possible. This love does not come by itself, nor does it come automatically in a spiritual awakening service but real love is developed in the hard school of life over many years. Nitish won’t be forgiven for breaking ties with BJP

New Delhi, July 6 (AGeNCieS): Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a ‘virtual’ election campaign in Bihar making a veiled attack against his bete noire Nitish Kumar saying those who ‘betrayed’ BJP will be defeated by people of the state. “There is a 1974-like anti-Congress wave prevailing in the country now. The mandate of the people of Bihar was for NDA. Like then (in 1974), those who betrayed the people’s mandate in Bihar will be taught a lesson,” Modi told party leaders without taking the name of chief minister Nitish Kumar. The Bihar chief minister, who has been opposed to Modi’s style of politics, dumped BJP after his elevation as election campaign chief in his party last month. Modi talked to leaders of BJP in Bihar over their mobile telephone through audio bridge technology. A total of 1,500 leaders across the state were chosen and they were divided into three groups. He talked to five leaders of each group. Among those Modi talked to were former deputy chief minister Sushil Modi, former minister Ashwani Chaube, who was stranded in Uttarakhand for some PAtNA, July 6 (iNDiAN exPreSS): BJP campaign committee chairman and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is set to launch his Bihar campaign for 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Saturday by starting to interact with over 1,500 party functionaries through tele-conferencing to get the “ground feedback” to help prepare poll strategies. The teleconferencing is scheduled to be for one hour from 6 pm. There would be three groups comprising 500 BJP workers of different levels in each. The interaction programme would only be for organisational workers. Senior leaders like former Deputy Chief Min-

time, state BJP vice-president Sanjay Mayuk, MLAs Nitin Narain and Vijay Singh. Bihar BJP president Mangal Pande told Modi that everyone was talking about the possibility of his becoming Prime Minister. The chief minister laughed away the suggestion and said price rise was now emerging as a major issue and BJP workers should work hard to fight the Congress-led Central government on this and other issues. When he talked to party leaders in Arrah, Aurangabad and Baata, Modi appeared to show some geographical knowledge of the areas when he mentioned some of the places. To one of them, he talked about the late JD(U) leader Digvijay Singh. On the other hand, the rival JD(U) has termed it as a “drama”, saying the use of high tech is an urban phenomenon and not very effective among masses. After Modi’s elevation to the post of BJP’s campaign committee chief, Nitish Kumar-led JD(U) snapped its ties 17-year-old ties with BJP. Narendra Modi

Narendra Modi all set to launch his Bihar campaign

ister Sushil Kumar Modi and leader of opposition in Bihar Assembly Nandkishore Yadav would not be involved, said state BJP President Mangal Pandey. The media managers of Modi have developed a software that would ensure group calls to him from party workers from across the state. The idea behind direct call to party functionaries — including panchayat and block presidents, morcha heads and state executive members — aims to know “what needs to be done to further strengthen” the party, more so after its split with the JD(U) in Bihar.

Bihar BJP co-incharge Dharmendra Pradhan told The Indian Express: “The 1,500 calls are divided in three lots. Calls will be made to party functionaries across the state. Tele-conferencing will have five-six calls at a time giving their suggestions to Modi and listening to his brief. It is more about Modi rendering direct touch to party functionaries to galvanise them for the big battle.” Pradhan said Modi might have chosen to speak to Bihar cadre because he knew they “had made sacrifice (by splitting with the JD-U) and needed to be given the right

boost to prepare” for 2014 elections. The party officebearers, however, are not called to gather at particular places for tele-conferencing. “Narendra Modi is not just our national campaign committee head, he is a very good strategist and organiser. Tele-conferencing is one of his ways to kick-start the campaign by giving it right motivation and energy,” said Pradhan. Narendra Modi had kept off from Bihar in 2009 Parliamentary polls as well 2010 Assembly elections. BJP has 12 Lok Sabha members from Bihar at present while its erstwhile partner JD(U) has 20. RJD has 4, Congress 2 and as many others are Independent.

He said the Dalai Lama would be participating in functions in Bylakuppe, one of the largest settlements of the exiles in India. Special prayers began at the hilltop Tsuglagkhang temple close to the official palace of the Dalai Lama at McLeodganj near Dharamsala.

Born on July 6, 1935 at Taktser hamlet in northeastern Tibet, the Dalai Lama was recognised at the age of two as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama Thubten Gyatso. He fled Tibet after a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959, basing his Tibetan government-in-exile here. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his non-violent campaign for democracy and freedom in his homeland. Ever since he fled to India, he has spent his time in exile pushing for autonomy for Tibet. The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, has been following a “middle-path” policy that seeks “greater autonomy” for Tibetans rather than complete independence. The Dalai Lama has increasingly voiced his frustration with the ongoing self-immolations in Tibet and said, “these drastic actions are the symptom of a cause, which the Chinese authorities should investigate and take steps to resolve”.

Plea in SC seeks quashing Mozambique trade doubles July 6 (iANS): Trade between Mozambique of food security ordinance mAPuto, and India has doubled from $6.31 million in 2010 to $1.28

New Delhi, July 6 (iANS): A day after President Pranab Mukherjee promulgated the national food security ordinance, a petitioner claimed it was “unconstitutional” and urged the Supreme Court to quash it for allegedly being inspired by the UPA’s pre-poll propaganda. Petitioner advocate Manohar Lal Sharma said that the constitutional provisions on powers of the president to promulgate ordinances during recess of parliament were only to deal with a situation requiring emergent legislations. Describing the promulgation of the ordinance as “unconstitutional”, the petitioner contended that a bill to enact food security law was introduced in parliament in the first week of May but it was allegedly not pushed by the government. Can a bill that had been introduced in parliament but not debated be made into a law by taking the ordinance route? asked the petition. Describing the government move as “malafide”, the petition asked if constitutional provisions could be allowed to be misused by the ruling parties for pre-election propaganda. Recalling the earlier proceedings in the apex court on the working of the public distribution system (PDS) and its revamp, the petitioner said the government did not act in 2010 when the judges told it to distribute food grain free to the needy if there were inadequate provisions for its storage. Sharma said millions of tonnes of wheat had rotten because procurement agencies did not have storage capacity.

billion in 2012, a government minister said Friday. Deputy Mineral Resources Minister Abdul Razak said this was due to good economic relations between the two countries and boosted by Mozambican President Armando Guebuza’s visit to India two years ago, reports Xinhua. The figure was revealed at an India-Mozambique business forum in Maputo. Razak said Indian businessmen had a lot of opportunities to grab in Mozambique in the fields of mineral resources, transport, energy, health and technology among others. “Investment climate in our country is excellent”, he said. “Mozambique is open to direct foreign investment.” Razak said Mozambique had a huge potential such as natural gas with reserves attaining around 160 trillion cubic feet and coal deposite of about 20 billion tonnes.

New Delhi, July 6 (AP) : A fire official says a fourstory building has collapsed in the Indian capital while it was being demolished, killing at least one worker and injuring 14 others. The official, S.L. Sharma, says the occupants vacated the building recently as it developed cracks. The building came crashing down early Saturday. Building collapses are common in India because builders often use substandard materials and multistory structures are often built without adequate supervision, and the massive demand for housing around India’s cities and pervasive corruption often result in builders adding unauthorized floors or putting up illegal buildings. In April, 74 people were killed when an eight-story building being constructed illegally in Thane caved in. It was the country’s worst building collapse in decades.

BhuBANeSwAr, July 6 (iNDiAN exPreSS): Despite objections by the Union ministry of tribal affairs, the Orissa government today announced dates for conducting gram sabhas in 12 villages of Kalahandi and Rayagada districts where the fate of the proposed bauxite mining for Vedanta Alumina’s on Niyamgiri Hills wuld be decided. Orissa SC/ST development minister Lalbihari Himrika said gram sabhas would be held between July 18 to August 19 in 12 hill slope villages as per the April 18 order of Supreme Court. While disposing the petition by Vedanta and Orissa Mining Corporation over mining atop Niyamgiri hills, the SC ordered that the religious rights of tribals have to be considered by gram sabhas of Kalahandi and Rayagada districts.

Himrika said gram sabhas will be held between July 18 and 19 August in seven villages of Rayagada district, while the same would be held in five villages of Kalahandi between July 23 and 30. Though union minister for tribal development V Kishore Chandra Deo and his ministry secretary Vibha Puri Das in their letters to Governor SC Jamir and State chief secretary advised addition of more number of villages for ram sabha hearing, Himirika said the state government had consulted the advocate general on this regard. “We are going by the apex court’s order. New Delhi, July 6 (Zee meDiA BureAu): Ishrat Jahan’s family once again on Saturday claimed innocence for her while addressing a press conference here. Speaking at the Constitution Club, Ishrat’s sister said she was intelligent and was so busy with her studies that she had little time for other things. “Ishrat was a science student and intelligent. She used to remain busy with studies all the time,” her sister said. “She added that Ishrat used to teach underprivileged children and also hold private tuitions in the evening every day after her classes. She again used to study after tuitions. When she didn’t have time for herself, how could she be involved in such (terror) activities,” her sister asked. The press conference, which was briefly disrupted by right-wingactivistsbelongingtotheSwabhimaanParty,came after it emerged that a letter by the Intelligence Bureau to the

Home Ministryin June in connection with the case hadalleged that the US’ FBI had mentioned in 2009 that Ishrat Jahan could be a suicide bomber. According to reports, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), in 2009, on the basis of their interrogation of Lashkar-e-Toiba operative David Headley, had sent a letter to the Indian government, informing that Ishrat Jahan was recruited by Muzammil, a terror operative. The FBI report, which has been shared by the Intelligence Bureau, has claimed that LeT operative Zaki-ur-Rehman had told Headley about the induction of Ishrat in the terror module. However, notably, the NIA’s interrogation of Headley does not mention anything about the 19-year-old, who was killed in an encounter in Gujarat. The CBI, in a chargesheet filed in an Ahmedabad court earlier this week, had said that the Ishrat Jahan encounter in 2004 was staged and fake.

As a precautionary measure, the bench said, “A notice should be sent to the concerned party three months prior to the date of his/her

KolKAtA, July 6 (iANS) The CPI-M Saturday accused the West Bengal government of unleashing terror in the run up to the panchayat polls and of challenging the election system. Rabin Deb, state secretariat member of the CPI-M which heads the Left Front, blamed the Trinamool Congress of for the killing of Marxist workers and activists. “We have demanded that the State Election Commission should order the immediate arrest of the motorcycle borne miscreants owing allegiance to the ruling party who are terrorising people in the countryside,” he said. “Eighteen Left workers have been killed since elections were declared. Activists of other parties are also being killed,” Deb told the media after attending an allparty meet convened by the Election Commission. Deb said Left workers were being implicated in false cases. “The government is challenging the election system and the powers of the State Election Commission. The government has a dictatorial attitude. They are not prepared to abide by the decisions of the Supreme Court and the Calcutta High Court,” he said. Egypt braces for more clashes, new govt

CAIRO, JULY 6 (AgENCIES): Egyptians awoke Saturday to an uneasy calm following a spasm of overnight violence as Islamist leaders and supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi vowed to continue their campaign to return him to power. In some of the worst violence seen since 2011, at least 36 people were killed nationwide Friday and more than 1,000 were injured, according to Egypt’s Health Ministry. After trying to keep a low profile since removing Morsi on Wednesday, Egypt’s military mounted a stronger presence Saturday to ensure that rival factions were kept apart. Roads were restricted around the Republican Guard complex, where the Muslim Brotherhood says five of its members were shot Friday and Morsi is believed to be held under arrest. Soldiers were dispatched to Alexandria, where a dozen people were killed in some of the most

intense clashes, according to Egyptian media. Most factional leaders in Egypt, including those from the Muslim Brotherhood, called upon their supporters to avoid vio-

Retrial of Egypt’s Mubarak adjourned to August 17

CAIRO, JULY 6 (AP) A Cairo court has adjourned to August 17 the retrial of former President Hosni Mubarak over charges of corruption and involvement in the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising that ousted him. Mubarak and his two sons, Alaa and Gamal, who are on trial for corruption, appeared at the court session Saturday. Mubarak is charged with both corruption and responsibility for the deaths of some 850 protesters during the early days of the 2011 revolt. The former leader was convicted in 2012 of the charges, but an appeals court granted a retrial. Mubarak’s democratically elected successor, Mohammed Morsi, was overthrown by the military on Wednesday and replaced with an interim president as part of what the army says is a roadmap to new elections.

They say the army’s removal of Morsi was illegal and a declaration of war on Islam. “The masses will continue their civilized protests and peaceful sit-ins in Cairo until the military coup is reversed and the legitimate president is restored,” a coalition of Is-

South Africa: Mandela nears a month in hospital

JOHANNESBURg, JULY 6 (AP) : Former South African leader Nelson Mandela has been in a hospital for nearly a month. There was no official update Saturday morning on the condition of the 94-yearold former president, who is in critical but stable condition after being diagnosed with a recurring lung infection. He was taken to a hospital in Pretoria, the capital, on June 8. The government has said Mandela is not in a vegetative state, contrary to recent court documents. A close friend told Sky News that the anti-apartheid leader was conscious and responsive earlier this week. There has been an outpouring of concern in South Africa and around the world for Mandela, a transformative figure who led the tense shift from white rule to democracy two decades ago in a spirit of reconciliation.

92-year-old Iraqi farmer marries 22-year-old bride

NEW YORK, JULY 6 (ANI): A 92-year-old Iraqi farmer got married for the 2nd time to a 22-yearold bride. Musali Mohammed al-Mujamaie, a father of 16 children, tied the knot with Muna Mukhlif alJuburi, during a ceremony on Thursday at his home in the village of Gubban, just south of Samarra in central Iraq, the New York Daily News reported. The elaborate ceremony went on for four hours and included musical and dance performances and celebratory gunfire. It was also attended by local tribal and religious leaders. Al-Mujamaie said after the ceremony that he felt like a 20-year-old. His first wife died three years ago. They were together for nearly 60 years.

top Muslim Brotherhood leaders. Sen. John McCain called upon the U.S. to halt the $1.3 billion in aid to Egypt’s military, saying the Obama administration should not condone the overthrow of a freely elected government.

The Obama administration has attempted to stake out a neutral position on Morsi’s ousting and has avoided calling it a military coup to circumvent U.S. laws that would trigger an immediate suspension of American aid.

Separately, a Cairo court on Saturday postponed until Aug. 17 the retrial of Mubarak, who is charged with corruption and responsibility for the deaths of some 850 Egyptian protesters during the 2011 revolt.

Qinghai-Tibet Railway expands its reach

BEIJINg, JULY 6 (IANS): Seven years after the Qinghai-Tibet Railway began operation, the “roof of the world” is about to see more railway lines connecting it to other parts of China. Several new rail lines are either under construction or being planned to form a rail network in the sparsely populated Qinghai-Tibet plateau, Xinhua reported. The Qinghai-Tibet railway, which spans 1,956 km from Xining in Qinghai province to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, carried 10.76 million people and 56.06 million tonnes of cargo in 2012. With new extension lines in place, the company estimates that its passenger and cargo loads will increase to 14 million and 90 tonnes in 2015. The railway has led to a boom in tourism in Tibet. In 2012, more than 10 million tourists visited Tibet, up 21.7 percent year on year. Tourism revenue surged 30.3 percent to $2.06 billion.

Snowden gets Venezuela, Nicaragua asylum offers

CARACAS, VENEzUELA, JULY 6 (AP) : The quest by NSA leaker Edward Snowden for a safe haven has taken a turn toward Latin America, with offers for asylum coming from the leftist presidents of Nicaragua and Venezuela. But there were no immediate signs that efforts were underway to bring him to either nation after Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela and Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua made their offers during separate speeches in their home countries Friday. The offers came one day after leftist South American leaders gathered to denounce the rerouting of Bolivian President Evo Morales’ plane over Europe amid reports that the fugitive American was aboard. Snowden, who is being sought by the United States, has asked for asylum in more than 20 countries, including Nicaragua and Venezuela. Many another nations have turned him down. “As head of state, the government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela decided to offer humanitarian asylum to the young American Edward Snowden so that he can live in the homeland” of independence leader Simon Bolivar and the late President Hugo Chavez without “persecution from the empire,” Maduro said, referring to the United States. Maduro said several other Latin American governments have also expressed their intention of taking a similar stance by offering asylum for the cause of “dignity.” Chavez, who hand-picked Maduro as his successor, often engaged in similar defiance, criticizing U.S.-style capitalism and policies. In a 2006 speech to the U.N. General Assembly of world leaders, Chavez called President George W. Bush the devil, saying the podium reeked of sulfur after the U.S. president’s address. He also accused Washington of plotting against him, expelled several diplomats and drug-enforcement agents and threatened to stop sending oil to the U.S.

Maduro made the asylum offer during a speech marking the anniversary of Venezuela’s independence. It was not immediately clear if there were any conditions to Venezuela’s offer. But his critics said Maduro’s decision is nothing but an attempt to veil the current undignified conditions of Venezuela, including one of the world’s highest inflation rates and a shortage of basic products such as toilet paper. “The asylum doesn’t fix the economic disaster, the record inflation, an upcoming devaluation (of the currency), and the rising crime rate,” Venezuelan opposition leader Henrique Capriles said in his Twitter account. Maduro beat Capriles in April’s presidential election, but Capriles has not recognized defeat and has called it an electoral fraud. Asked earlier this week about the possibility that any countries in the region would offer Snowden asylum, Geoff Thale, program director at the Washington Office on Latin America think tank, said that he thought Ortega would be careful not to damage his country’s relationship with the U.S. “Ortega has been tremendously successful at exploiting both the ALBA relationship and the U.S. relationship,” Thale said, referring to the ALBA leftist trade bloc that provides Nicaragua with petroleum subsidies. Although Ortega is publicly seen as anti-American, “Nicaragua and the U.S. cooperate very closely on drug interdiction and the U.S. and Nicaraguan militaries work very closely, too,” Thale said before the asylum offer was made. Ortega said Friday he was willing to make the same asylum offer “if circumstances allow it,” although he didn’t say what those circumstances would be when he spoke during a speech in Managua. He said the Nicaraguan embassy in Moscow received Snowden’s application for asylum and that it is studying the request. “We have the sovereign right to help a person who felt

remorse after finding out how the United States was using technology to spy on the whole world, and especially its European allies,” Ortega said. The offers came one day after Maduro joined other leftist South American presidents Thursday in Cochabamba, Bolivia, to rally behind Morales and denounce the incident involving the plane. Spain on Friday said it had been warned along with other European countries that Snowden, a former U.S. intelligence worker, was aboard the Bolivian presidential plane, an acknowledgement that the manhunt for the fugitive leaker had something to do with the plane’s unexpected diversion to Austria. It is unclear whether the United States warned Madrid about the Bolivian president’s plane. U.S. officials will not detail their conversations with European countries, except to say that they have stated the U.S.’s general position that it wants Snowden back. President Barack Obama has publicly displayed a relaxed attitude toward Snowden’s movements, saying last month that he wouldn’t be “scrambling jets to get a 29-year-old hacker.” But the drama surrounding the flight of Morales, whose plane was abruptly rerouted to Vienna after apparently being denied permission to fly over France, suggests that pressure is being applied behind the scenes. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel GarciaMargallo told Spanish National Television that “they told us that the information was clear, that he was inside.” He did not identify who “they” were and declined to say whether he had been in contact with the U.S. But he said that European countries’ decisions were based on the tip. France has since sent a letter of apology to the Bolivian government. Meanwhile, secret-spilling website WikiLeaks said that Snowden, who is still believed to be stuck in a Moscow airport’s transit area, had put in asylum applications to six new countries.

BEIJINg, JULY 6.(AP): China and Pakistan set their sights Friday on developing a transport link through rugged mountains and lawless lands, a route they hope will boost economic growth and bring critical oil supplies to power-hungry China much faster. A broad agreement for the “economic corridor” was among eight pacts signed following a meeting in Beijing between Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The 2,000-kilometer (1,200-mile) transport link was described as a “long-term plan” to connect Kashgar in northwestern China to the Pakistani port of Gwadar, likely by road in the beginning and possibly by rail later. Pakistan is hoping to attract greater Chinese investment to revive its moribund economy beset by inefficiency, corruption, political instability and chronic electricity shortages, while expanding two-way trade that exceeded $12 billion for the first time last year. For its part, China wants Pakistan to crack down on insurgents from China’s Muslim Uighur minority who have taken refuge in Pakistan’s northwest alongside al-Qaidalinked extremists. Pakistan says it has killed or extradited several of those militants over the past few years, but acknowledges that some remain at large in the area. Another agreement is for a fiber-optic cable to be laid from the Chinese border to the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi which will boost Pakistan’s access to international communications networks. China is to provide 85 percent of the financing for the three-year project’s $44 million budget, with Pakistan covering the rest. Sharif’s visit to China is his first foreign trip since returning to power last month, highlighting the importance Pakistan places on its 63-year-old relationship with its

most important ally in the region. The two cooperate closely in diplomatic and defense affairs, and share a common rival in their mutual neighbor and occasional military opponent India. “Let me tell you very candidly and very sincerely that what I am witnessing here on my visit to Beijing, it reminds me of the saying our friendship is higher than the Himalayas and deeper than the deepest sea in the world, and sweeter than honey,” Sharif told Li at the start of their meeting, employing the usual effusive language with which the two nations describe their relationship. A joint statement issued after the meeting affirmed their support for an Afghan-led peace effort in the country following the withdrawal of U.S. troops next year. It said they would “work with the regional countries and the international community to help Afghanistan achieve peace, stability and security.” China provides Pakistan with aid and foreign investment, while Islamabad offers Beijing important diplomatic backing in the face of Muslim-majority nations who might otherwise criticize China’s handling of its Muslim population. Hopes for road, rail and pipeline links from Kashgar to the presently little-used port at Gwadar received a major boost when control of the port was transferred to China’s state-owned China Overseas Ports Holding Co. Ltd. in February. Built by Chinese workers and opened in 2007, it is undergoing a major expansion to turn it into a fullfledged, deep water commercial port. The statement said a joint committee will be set up that will oversee the upgrading and realigning of the 1,300-kilometer (800-mile) Karakoram highway running from Kashgar to the Pakistani town of Abbottabad over

mountain passes as high as 4,693 meters (15,397 feet). If the transport link takes off, oil from the Middle East could be offloaded at Gwadar, which is located just outside the mouth of the Gulf, and transported to China through the lawless Baluchistan province in Paksitan and the rugged Karakoram mountains. Such a link would vastly cut the 12,000-kilometer (7,500-mile) route that Mideast oil supplies must now take to reach Chinese ports. Gwadar could also provide an outlet for copper and other resources that Chinese companies plan to mine in Afghanistan, while offering a base for China’s navy to operate in the Indian Ocean in competition with India. China has already begun upgrading the Karakoram highway and has dispatched workers to develop projects high in the mountains of the Pakistan-controlled part of Kashmir. The geographical and security challenges to the link remain daunting, however, and any working link is likely many years away. It would go through territory menaced by the Pakistani Taliban, while nationalists in Baluchistan view it as an attempt by the ethnic Punjabis who largely run Pakistan to strengthen their control over the desert region and plunder its natural resources. While the idea of pipeline and rail links is receiving more credence than when first proposed several years ago, the reality on the ground will rule out any big changes for the time being, said Andrew Small, an expert on China-Pakistan relations at the German Marshall Fund in Washington, D.C. “None of the long-term security questions have gone away and continue to bring the project’s viability into question,” Small said. “Basic things like infrastructure still need to be accomplished. That alone isn’t going to be a game-changer.”

IPL spot-fixing: BCCI suspends Rajasthan Royals’ Harmeet Singh

NeW Delhi, July 6 (aGeNcies): Rajasthan Royals spinner Harmeet Singh has been suspended by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) pending an enquiry into his role in the IPL spot-fixing and betting scandal on Saturday. The left-arm spinner has also been issued a show-cause notice after he was quizzed by BCCI’s AntiCorruption Unit chief Ravi Sawani in Mumbai on Saturday. Police sources claim that fixers and bookies had tried to lure Singh with gifts to indulge in spot-fixing but he "did not act accordingly". Singh, who had represented India in its U-19 team in two World Cups, had earlier recorded his statement before a court here after the Delhi Police decided to make him a prosecution witness, tightening their case against three cricketers in the IPL spot-fixing scandal.

loNDoN, July 6 (ap): Paulinho joined Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday as the English Premier League club made their first pre-season signing in a bid to secure a top four finish next term. The 24-year-old, previously with Corinthians, was a regular for Brazil during their Confederations Cup campaign which culminated in a 3-0 win over Spain in the final on Sunday. Neither the fee or length of contract has been disclosed by Tottenham. He told the north London club's official Twitter account, @SpursOfficial: "I am very happy and excited to have joined Spurs. It's a huge pleasure for my career to be at a club as big as Tottenham." Inter Milan and Real Madrid were also believed to be interested in a move for the midfielder, who scored twice during the Confederations Cup, following on from his equalising goal in Brazil's 2-2 draw with England last month.

The parliamentary secretary in his address exhorted the players to take games and sports seriously and not play just for the sake of participation or mere “time past.” Citing the example of late T Ao, former Indian football captain, Zhaleo said that despite the poor infrastructure and sports facilities available during those days, T Ao could carve for himself a niche in India football history because of his serious and dedicated approach to the game. He said whether in business, sports or other professions, one must not take the casual approach but imbibe the competitive spirit. Zhaleo also said that in games and sports, discipline and perseverance are of outmost importance and

that without these two qualities, a sportsman can never reach greater heights. Dwelling on Dimapur, the parliamentary secretary said of late the commercial hub has become the crime capital of Nagaland and no longer a peaceful place to live in. Besides the law enforcing agencies, Zhaleo said that it is also the responsibility of every village council in Dimapur to check anti-social elements in their respective jurisdiction. Earlier, the parliamen-

tary secretary also inaugurated the ambulance service of Altrura Society. Chakroma Public Organization vice president and head GB of Tenyiphe – 1 village, Nolesa Zhotso also spoke on the occasion. Altrura Society president, Megosielie Kruse, delivered the keynote address and the society’s games and sports secretary, Keneiwelie Kin administered the oath taking. Altogether, 12 teams from Chakroma area are taking part in the tournament.

porT oF spaiN, July 6 (pTi): Skipper Virat Kohli led from the front with a responsible century-knock as India bounced back in the race for the tri-series final with a dominating 102-run win over the West Indies in a crucial rain-hit match, on Friday. Batting with a lot of grit and gumption, Kohli anchored India to a challenging 311 for seven after his side was in a spot of bother, having lost five established batsmen at a score of 210 in 40 overs. Openers Shikhar Dhawan (69) and Rohit Sharma (46) had laid a strong foundation with their 123-run stand and Kohli (102) ensured that their hard work does not go waste as he made up for the failure of the middle-order with his gritty 14th one-day century. Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar rattled the West Indies chase with wickets of Chris Gayle and Darren Bravo, and rain gods only made the job tougher for the hosts as their target was revised to 274 from 39 overs after a two-hour rain delay. West Indies had a daunting task of scoring a further 218 runs from 39 overs after resuming at 56 for two in 10 overs. India, desperately requiring a win to remain in the hunt for a berth in the final, bowled out the hosts for 171 in 34 to walk away with a bonus point. India's victory meant that the tournament is open with all three teams having a chance to qualify for the final. West Indies next play Sri Lanka on Sunday and then India face Sri Lanka on Tuesday in the last league match. West Indies batsmen succumbed to pressure after resumption of play and lost

wickets in a heap. Stage was set for Indian pacers and Kumar (3/29) and Ishant Sharma in no time had knocked off half of the West Indies' batting line up. Sharma had Marlon Samuels (6) caught and removed set opener Johnson Charles (45) while Kumar added wicket of dangerous Kieron Pollard, who could not even open his account. Umesh Yadav (3/32) joined the party by scalping Denesh Ramdin (9) and rival skipper Dwayne Bravo (14) to leave West Indies reeling at 108 for six. Earlier, Kohli got out in the last ball of the innings as he nullified the success of West Indies fast bowlers, who had put the hosts in a good position with regular strikes. Kohli faced 83 balls in his innings and punished the Caribbean bowlers with 13 fours and two sixes. After 40 overs, India had 210 runs on the board and only Kohli to bat with tail-enders as pace duo of Kemar Roach and Tino Best had polished off the Indian middle-order. Kohli responded to the challenge in the best possible manner as India scored 101 runs in the last 10 overs and his contribution was 67 runs. R Ashwin supported Kohli well with his 18ball 25 as they shared a 90-run stand for the seventh wicket in 8.2 overs. Earlier after sent in to bat, Dhawan and Sharma provided a solid start to India with 123-run stand, which was broken when the left-hander chose to play aggressively after spending a watchful 23 overs at the crease. Coming into the make-or-break match, both the Indian openers batted with a lot of responsibility.

‘Despicable Me 2’: Endearing and Likable

A

n unexpected animated hit in 2010, Despicable Me grossed more than $540 million and becoming the 10th-biggest toon film in history. So it was a no-brainer for Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment to come up with a sequel for the worldwide blockbuster this summer, touting it as “more minion madness.” Charming, unique and family friendly, Despicable Me saw would-be villain Gru’s heart filled by three adorable orphan girls. In Despicable Me 2, the tagline is “When the world needed a hero, they called a villain.” The follow-up finds Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) converted from stealing the moon to goodness and suburban life. As a doting father, he has repurposed his plethora of scary inventions in order to keep his three adopted daughters entertained. Meanwhile, Gru’s gibberish-spouting, goggle-wearing yellow minions are plugging away as wannabe babysitters and busy developing a line of their master’s delicious jellies and jams. Dr. Nefario (Russell Brand) returns as Gru’s assistant, but it’s clear he misses

Niall Horan splits from Zoe Whelan

Sunday

ne Direction star Niall Horan has split from his model girlfriend Zoe Whelan according to reports, and it is said he has been ignoring her for almost two weeks. The One Direction heart throb has ended his on/off relationship with the Irish model - which started in March - and it is claimed he has been ‘’blanking her’’ by severing all ties. A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: ‘’It is all over for Niall and Zoe - and it is completely because of his side of things. ‘’Obviously, it was always going to be hard to have an ongoing relationship when his job has him travelling around so much. ‘’But there’s been no push from Niall to keep things going at all and has told Zoe it is over by completely blanking her.’’ With the 18-year-old beauty’s career starting to go from strength to strength, the ‘Little Things’ hitmaker hasn’t been in touch to over his congratulations or support. The insider said: ‘’Over the past few weeks her modelling career has become huge, but Niall hasn’t been in contact to say well done. She hasn’t even had a text from him, let alone a call, for nearly two weeks. ‘’Out of respect to Niall, she refused to say a word to anyone about the relationship - even when there was money on the table to spill the beans as she knew it would be over then. ‘’But it seems just doing her job is too much for 1D’s people, who appear to have pressured Niall to cut all ties with Zoe. It’s cruel the way he’s done it, and she’s obviously a bit devastated it’s over.’’

doing villainous acts, so that becomes a plot twist. Kristen Wiig, who voiced Miss Hattie in the first movie, returns but in a different role, as secret agent Lucy Wilde. Gru’s love interest and ideal mother for the sisters Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier) and Agnes (Elsie Kate Fisher), Lucy represents a secretive organization called the Anti-Villain League, which seeks to recruit Gru. “Yes, I have been recruited by a top-secret agency to go undercover and save the world,” Gru tells his girls. Edith asks, “You’re gonna be a spy?” Gru, who had reluctantly agreed to help, replies, “That’s right, baby! Gru’s back in the game with gadgets and weapons and cool cars!” Gru must set up an undercover operation in a mall cupcake shop while tracking El Macho (Benjamin Bratt), a former villain whom fatherhood has forced into semi-retirement, and while managing a Mexi-

can restaurant at the mall. Gru must save the world by keeping the socalled PX41 serum, which can turn innocent creatures into indestructible monsters, from falling into the wrong hands. Along the way, homage is paid to Despicable Me, including the super slow-mo avoidingmissiles scenes and another large great white shark. Despicable Me 2 is far from a faith-based animated toon, but this comedy features wholesome and positive messages about the goodness of adoption, parenting, marriage and being a family. The family-friendly animated film, though, could have used less potty humor. Too bad there isn’t another sweet p r a y e r scene like in Despicable Me. Here’s hoping that there will be one in the minions’ feature, which is in the works. Don’t miss Despicable Me 2’s end-credits “audition” sequence.

he complaint was filed by former actress at Amboli Police Station on Thursday. She began working in films from 2001 but never really got a toehold in Bollywood. She quit acting after her marriage to Prince Tuli. Mookhey had filed a complaint against her husband in July last year too. But it was a non-cognizable offense for which the police needs direction from the court to file an FIR. This time, the FIR has been filed and the police are investigating Yukta’s allegations. No arrest has been made so far.

he shot to fame in one of the most successful girl bands of all time, and has since gone on to carve out a name for herself in her own right thanks to her ever-growing fashion empire. But Victoria Beckham has admitted she is constantly struggling to maintain a certain level of success, while balancing her work commitments with being a mother to her four children, Brooklyn, 14, Romeo, 10, Cruz, eight, and Harper, 23 months. Opening up in a stunning cover shoot for the August edition of Vogue China, the 39-year-old superstar admitted she feels ‘guilty’ every time she goes out to work. She said: When you are successful the hardest thing is maintaining that level of success, so you work harder to maintain what you have achieved. Posing in a high-fashion shoot for Vogue China, Victoria showed off her flawless skin and impeccable complexion as she worked her magic for the camera. Showing off her enviable cheekbones and fluttering lashes in a close-up black and white shot, the fashion designer looked incredible as she positively smouldered for photographer Josh Olins. Another shot, showed the mother-of-four draping one toned leg over the other as she gazed into the distance, wearing a dramatic black flared cape. And after visiting China alongside her husband David two weeks ago, Victoria praised the beauty and innate fashion sense Chinese women have. She added in the Vogue interview: ‘I love China. The women really understand fashion and I can honestly say the women who come to my events are some of the most beautiful women I have ever seen. ‘They have remarkable bodies and are happy and positive and I love that. I think they know what looks good, how to accessorise and have beautiful hair and flawless skin. ‘When I come to China I get given many little gifts and notes from the fans and that genuinely means a lot to me.’ Although Victoria was propelled to worldwide superstardom as one-fifth of the Spice Girls, she admitted ‘empowering women’ through her designs means more to her than having thousands of people cheering for her on stage. She said: ‘I have been in the limelight for over 20 years/ I am not on an ego trip, empowering women and making them feel sexy and great when they wear my clothes means more than thousands of people clapping. Empowering women is what makes me feel good.’ Victoria unveiled her Vogue China cover on her Twitter page on Friday, namechecking editor Angelica Cheung and photographer Josh Olins: Super excited for my Vogue China cover shot by Josh Olins! Thank u @Angelica_Cheung x vb.’ During their joint visit to China, Victoria and David found their presence caused a huge stir, with thousands of fans fighting for a glimpse of the power couple. Victoria promoted her fashion collection in a Beijing department store, while they made a joint appearance on the China Central TV show. Meanwhile, David attended promotional events at H&M and Adidas, as well as enjoying a kickaround with young footballers.

to Mauresmo for help after failing to strike up a rapport with a series of coaches. Her compatriot has brought a calmer approach to Bartoli's preparations, to the extent that the 28-yearold was even willing to sleep up to 30 minutes before her semi-final win over Kirsten Flipkens on Thursday, and her influence was clear to see in the final as Bartoli recovered from a potentially disastrous start. Bartoli was broken in the first game, but Lisicki then surrendered her own serve in error-strewn fashion. Lisicki, 23, was a shadow of the bold stroke-maker who stunned defending champion Serena Williams in the fourth round. But Bartoli had shaken off her early anxiety and took advantage of Lisicki's nerves to break again for a 3-1 lead. Throughout her career Bartoli's game has been marked by bizarre routines as she jumps, skips, shuffles and twirls her racket before serving or returning. And her quirky routine was on full display as she took the attack to Lisicki in the sixth game, breaking to seal the set thanks to a series of punishing forehands. Lisicki had every reason to hang her head as she trudged off court to gather her thoughts during a bathroom break before the start of the second set. The German finally held serve for the first time in the match when she returned to start the second set. She then mounted her only serious threat to Bartoli's dominance, earning four break points in the second game, only to see the Frenchwoman come up with a series of

blistering winners. Bartoli had scented Lisicki's discomfort and landed the decisive blow with a break to move 2-1 ahead. Liskci's beaming smile and all-action style had made her the darling of the Centre Court crowd this year, but this was a miserable end to her fairytale run and she was in tears when she served at 3-1 down. Bartoli showed no mercy, breaking again as she took a 5-1 lead. With the title within touching distance, tension crept into Bartoli's game and Lisicki was able to prolong the battle longer than expected.

London, JuLy 6 (agencies): Marion Bartoli romped to her first Grand Slam title as the French 15th seed thrashed Germany's Sabine Lisicki 6-1, 6-4 in the Wimbledon final on Saturday. Bartoli, 28, is the fifth oldest woman to become a first-time Grand Slam winner in the Open Era. Six years after losing to Venus Williams in the Wimbledon final, Bartoli returned to Centre Court and finally ended her long wait for a major crown with a supreme display of power hitting. She took just 81 minutes to rout 23rd seed Lisicki, who broke down in tears as the match slipped away in the second set. By finally winning her maiden major title in the 47th Grand Slam appearance of her career, Bartoli surpassed the previous record set by Jana Novotna, who won Wimbledon in 1998 after 45 appearances at the majors. Bartoli, who will climb to seventh when the latest world rankings are released on Monday, didn't drop a single set in her seven matches and is the first Frenchwoman to win a Grand Slam singles title since Amelie Mauresmo at Wimbledon in 2006. Ironically, Mauresmo has played a key role in Bartoli's remarkable renaissance over the last two weeks. Bartoli's career had been on a downward spiral in recent years and she hit rock bottom in February when she struggled with the emotional decision to move on from her dad Walter, who had coached her since childhood. She eventually turned
