Rahul Gandhi battles for eci orders re-poll 10 re-poll at seat as election end nears May 3 polling stations
The fight is now for the relevance of the Gandhi family as unquestioned leaders of the Congress, asserts Modi
AMETHI, MAY 7 (AFP): Beleaguered Rahul Gandhi, battling to save India’s ruling Congress party in national elections, sought to win over sceptical voters in his constituency on Wednesday as voting in the world’s biggest democracy entered its final stages. Gandh itravelled to his northern parliamentary seat to witness voting firsthand. He toured polling booths in Amethi -- his family’s bastion for more than 30 years-- and told reporters that local people were “expressing their love for me”. “Change is in the air for all to see. I too voted for change,” voter Shyam Charan Gupta told AFP from Amethi, a poor rural area in the crucial battleground state of Uttar Pradesh. The challenge facing Gandhi was underscored this week when opposition frontrunner Narendra Modi held a rally in Amethi and declared that nothing could save the dynasty. Modi, who has campaigned on reviving the flagging economy, urged voters to “break ties with the
in Nagaland
KoHIMA, MAY 7 (MExN): The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Nagaland, to conduct fresh polls (to the lone Nagaland parliamentary seat) in 33/2 Akhakhu and 33/25 Naltoqa polling stations under 33-Suruhoto (ST) Assembly Constituency. On the basis of available reports and after taking all material circumstances into account, the ECI declared the polls held at the said stations to be “void” and appointed May 10 (Saturday) as the date and fixed the hours for the re-polling from 7:00am to 4:00pm. The ECI has, similarly, declared the “adjourned poll” at 49-Tamlu (ST) Assembly Constituency under 1-Nagaland Parliamentary Constituency to be “void” India’s ruling Congress party Vice President Rahul Gandhi greets voters outside a polling station in Amethi, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Wednesday, May 7, 2014. family” that has produced three prime ministers. Gandhi’s presence in Amethi on Wednesday was interpreted in the local media as a sign of concern due to competition from the BJP candidate, former actress Smriti Irani, and a popular anti-corruption campaigner, Kumar Vishwas. In March, Gandhi’s campaign manager in Amethi told AFP that the former management consultant -- who spends on average only one night a month in his constituency -- had no plans for special campaigning there. The constituency, mostly wheat-growing farmland dotted with hamlets, abounds with complaints about the poor roads and intermittent electricity,
but Gandhi blames these problems on the local state government. A poor result here would deal a blow he would find it difficult to recover from. Targeting the family Opinion polls show voters have turned against Congress over massive graft scandals, spiralling inflation and a sharp economic slowdown during their two terms running a left-leaning coalition government since 2004. With Modi as the prime ministerial candidate, the BJP is expected to win the most seats in the 543-member parliament, but will likely fall short of an outright majority.
Analysts say Modi, the son of a tea-stall owner, appeared in Amethi because he sensed waning support for Gandhi. “Modi wanted to hit the last nail in the coffin. His visit (to Amethi) was aimed directly at Rahul, a direct blow,” Delhibased veteran political analyst and commentator Amulya Ganguli told AFP. Sonia, Rahul and his sister Priyanka have intensified their criticism of Modi, calling him a religious fanatic who would spread divisions between the majority Hindu and minority Muslim communities if he won power. The final round of voting, in 41 constituencies, will take place on Monday. Related story on page 8
and appointed May 10 (Saturday) as the date to conduct fresh polls “at some alternative place in nearby location that is not in dispute” from 7:00am to 4:00pm. The CEO, Nagaland, has been instructed by the ECI to “give wide publicity in polling area concerned” and also inform political parties and contesting candidates in writing. Further, the ECI clarified that “this will be an ad-hoc arrangement without prejudice to the respective claims of the two State Governments, in regard to the disputed border areas, which is presently sub-judice.” The fresh polls at the said polling stations have been instructed to be conducted in accordance with the Commission’s instructions contained in Chapter-XIII of Hand Book for Returning Officers. The Commissioner and Returning Officer, Nagaland, and Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Returning Officer, Zunheboto and Longleng respectively, have been informed of the same by the CEO, Nagaland, Sentiyanger Imchen.

KoHIMA, MAY 7 (MExN): The Nagaland SSA Teachers’ Association (NSSATA) has called off its ongoing agitation with effect from May 8, Thursday. While notifying this in a press release, the NSSATA has requested all its members to “discharge their duties from this day on.” “The agitation has been called off due to the timely intervention of the Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) at the present imbroglio,” stated the NSSATA. ‘one Government, one tax’
BJP nagaland voices for ‘new generation leaders’ Our Correspondent Kohima | May 7
BJP national vice president for Scheduled Tribe Morcha, Jonny G. Rengma, today rubbished speculations in sections of the media that Nagaland State Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio is “not likely going to Delhi.” “A leader and a statesman of Rio’s stature would not have volunteered to go as an MP from Nagaland, how can one believe that he will disrespect the mandate of the Naga people?” he questioned. Addressing media persons this afternoon, Rengma maintained that the speculations in the media is demonstrative that some people are trying to question Rio’s “political moral or character.” On the Congress demand for repoll in the State, he said the Election Commission of India should have taken timely action “when or if” they had received complaints during the “stipulated time”. He hoped that Rio’s successor would be one from among the “new generation leaders” in order to keep
‘BJP will not shy away from public responsibility’: Jonny G. Rengma the promises of NPF election slogans that Naga people cannot afford a government led by an “old aged person”. Stating that Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu, the president of NPF, is the “patriarch of the regional party not only in Nagaland but in the entire North East,” he said “we are fortunate to have him as DAN chairman and I am confident that he will be able to sort out the successor of Rio from within the NPF legislators taking the confidence of DAN partners.” Rengma alleged that communal violence in the North East, particularly in Assam, be it in Bodo area or Karbi Anglong, is the manifestation and the result of Congress abuse of vote banks among the minority community. As a result, he stated, people of
the North East states have responded against the Congress party in the recent Lok Sabha elections. He also expressed confidence that BJP and NDA alliance is likely to win 13 out of 25 seats including Sikkim in the North Eastern states. The BJP, he said, has never believed in toppling any democratically elected government but after the Lok Sabha poll results, few State governments starting from the JDU-led government in Bihar and Congress led government in Assam might collapse of contradiction within their own party, he said. He further added that BJP will not shy away from public responsibility in order to avoid burdening the people from untimely elections. Stating that more than 80% of the North East states share international border, particularly with South East Asian countries, he said the BJP in its 2014 election manifesto has focused on “international policy of governance.” “The progress of the North Eastern states will be the strength of India, that is the BJP agenda of governance,” he said.
