Nagaland Governor Dr. Ashwani Kumar today stressed on the need to ensure that women are guaranteed equal opportunities in social, economic and political spheres. “Let us together decide to remove all obstacles that prevent women from achieving their full potential. There is a need for us to have a re-look at our old traditions and customs so that our youth and women can become equal partners in our journey into the future,” Dr. Kumar said, while speaking at the observation of International Women’s Day in Kohima on Saturday. He said that several incidents over the past one year have jolted “our collective conscience.” First was the gruesome murder of a housewife at Dimapur. Then, the molestation of women engaged in the service of the Church, the horrible torture inflicted on a woman in Kohima and the exploitation of a physically and mentally challenged girl. The Governor said that these incidents indicate how cruel “we can be to our women folk.” “How can our rich traditions, culture and customs fail to prevent such shameful incidents?” Dr. Kumar condemned these “acts of gender insensitivity, atrocities and inequalities” in Naga society. “There is urgent need to

empower women and make them equal partners in the progress of our country,” he added. Dr. Kumar said that it will be impossible to create an economically prosperous and a healthy/ happy society, without addressing these issues and ensuring full participation of women in the decision making structures.
Redouble Efforts for Protection of Women Minister for Social Welfare, Kiyanilie Peseyie challenged the gathering to redouble efforts for protection of women and their welfare. “We must strive to ensure that women feel safe and secure at all times in our society.” Peseyie said that the State Resource Centre for Women was established to facilitate the processes that contribute to economic empowerment of women and social empowerment of women with emphasis of health and education. The department also set up a Women Commission in the state. “The welfare of our women is our priority and therefore, let us take optimum advan-
ssA teachers urged to call off agitation
Kohima, march 8 (mExN): The Department of School Education has requested the SSA teachers to call off their proposed agitation, “considering the efforts that have been put in by the Government as it is just a matter of time that the pending salary will be released.” Commissioner and Secretary, T Imkonglemba Ao, in a press note, stated that the hardships faced by the teachers, owing to non-payment of their salary, “is genuinely empathized with” and that fund received under SSA or the other flagship programs has “never been diverted.” He asserted that due priority has been given by the Nagaland Government for meeting the salary requirement, including the release of the State Matching Share for the program, which is 10% of the total outlay. He further informed that the entire SSA Mission Team led by the Commissioner and Secretary (Designate) is currently camped at Delhi for the purpose of pursuing fund release by the Government of India, and therefore “release of the unpaid salary will be done as and when fund is made available.” Regarding the possibilities of finding “ways and means” to release salary through the State’s
own resources and to have it refunded at a later stage, as pointed out by the associations, he said that this would “not be judicious in the end of the financial year.” On the issue of inability of the appointing authority to make regular or timely payment of salary to its employees, the department clarified that the SSA teachers were appointed as per the mandated requirements of the RTE Act, with the understanding that salary for such appointments would be funded by the Government of India through its flagship programs. It also pointed out that “there are other states facing the same problems like our state.” In his statement the Commissioner informed the SSA teachers that, “it is the prerogative of the State Government on how their appointment is to be treated since they were appointed under the SSA program and as such, the mode of payment of their salary, whether Plan or Non-Plan, will be decided by the State Government.” He further clarified that salary for SSA employees have been released till the month of November 2013, and not as stated. “Women Protection Centers” In All Districts Parliamentary Secretary for Sericulture, Cooperation & Women Development, Pukhayi Sumi said that Nagaland is the only state in the country to have a separate department for women development. Kohima, march 8 (mExN): Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has stated that the Nagaland state government is committed to pursue its goal of women empowerment and remove all wrong attitudes or any bias in social customs and practices, which may prevent women from realizing their full potentials. This dimension of the role of Naga women from the traditional family environment to the socioeconomic domain cannot therefore be ignored,” she said. In the decision making arena, she said there is today an encouraging presence of women at every senior level in the government sector. Nagaland has a women battalion in police, which is perhaps a first amongst the states in the country. “However, from the village to the Legislative Assembly, women still need to go that extra mile to arrive at an equal position, at par with men,” she said. The programme was organized by the Department for Women Development with Nagaland State Commission for Women and State Resource Centre for Women, under the theme “Inspiring Change.” It was chaired by Ramango Lotha, Secretary, Department for Women Development. Welcome address was delivered by Bano Vinito Chishi, Chairperson NSSWB while vote of thanks was proposed by Daisy Mezhur, Mission Director SRCW. Related stories on page 2

Celebrating womanhood through farming, solidarity Morung Express News Chizami | March 8
Traditional grass rain coats and graduation hats made of leaf—14 women farmers from Nagaland and one from Meghalaya, for the first time in their lives, were honored (with the coat and hat) for their contribution to biodiverse farming during the International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrations held at the North East Network’s (NEN) resource centre in Chizami, Phek district. These, as well as the 90 other women farmers and 33 men farmers present at the event, have not only kept genetic biodiversity alive on the farmland but also ensured health and nutrition to those many families in the region through jhum agriculture, terrace farming and family/backyard farming. Keeping up with its tradition and commitment towards supporting marginalized communities, especially women, NEN organized a Biodiversity Festival, this year, launching the International Year of Family Farming on March 7. Since women are the primary food producers and care-givers in the context of the North East region, they have been kept central to the project— strengthening farmer solidarity in Nagaland. This continued into the IWD 2014 on March 8 that celebrated womanhood in Nagaland through its women farmers, through the exchange of seeds and agricultural knowledge. While thanking every farmer present at today’s event, Project Team Leader, Seno Tsühah said, “We have to remember the women within our society who have contributed to social change— the mothers who made sure that their daughters were sent to schools and
colleges to ensure a better future for women today.” That women need freedom from violence against them, and political and economic empowerment to be able to do so, as well as to ‘Inspire Change,’ which is the IWD theme for this year. Women who feed societies are the enablers of this model, and were represented at today’s event from villages like Fakim, Therutsuswu, Ruzazho, Phugi, Dzulhami, Phesama, Noklak, Laitsohpliah (Meghalaya), Mesulumi, Sumi, Thetsumi, Sakraba, Enhulumi and Chizami— peripheries merging with other peripheries. As Tsielie Sakhrie and Samhita Barooah, in their solidarity messages noted, it is only through people-topeople solidarity that positive change can be brought about in the neighborhoods and communities. Chief Guest at the event, Menukhol John, Commissioner& Secretary, Land Resources said that respect for women and reduction of violence against women has to start from the kitchen, the home. He noted how many initiatives in Nagaland today have women at their forefront—from a microfinance unit in Tuensang to all self help groups to excelling in education. He was presented with a farmers’ declaration titled ‘an appeal to policy makers’ (see appeal in page 4). The Day was interspersed with traditional folk dances and songs. Invocation prayer was offered by Rev. Puli from New Phor Village. Solidarity messages were given by Samhita Barooah, TISS Guwahati, Niukai Pinglang, Noklak, Khriesino Rikha, Southern Angami Women’s Organisation, Tsielie Sakhrie, Khonoma Nature Conservation & Tragopan Sanctuary.
Stand-off at Indisen over border row Morung Express News Dimapur | March 8
People continue to defy prohibitory orders and intrude into the disputed area at the Dimapur-Karbi-Anlong border. On March 8, Indisen villagers and a group of around hundred people nearly came to blows after the former prevented the latter from going through the village to the disputed site. The situation was prevented from going out of hand, following intervention of the Dimapur district administration and police. According to the Indisen Village Council, the village had passed a resolution on March 5 that no people from outside the village will be allowed to pass through the village to the
disputed site. On March 8, a group of around a hundred people approached the village gate in vehicles, who were asked to turn back. The group of people went back but returned, resulting in an hour long stand-off. The group of people eventually retreated after the district administration intervened. The Indisen Village Council stated that it will continue to keep vigil for the sake of maintaining peace in the border and in the village. The council however informed that people continue to intrude into the disputed site from unguarded sections along the Dimapur-Karbi-Anglong border, while section 144 of the Cr. PC continues to remain in force along the border shared by Indisen and Rilan Yan villages.
foothill road: twist and turns galore Morung Express News Dimapur | March 8
The issue of ‘contract’ was at the core of yet another meeting of the Nagaland Foothill Road Coordination Committee (NFHRCC). Following the hullabaloo over allegation of favouritism, another has come to the fore. According to a startling disclosure made at a routine meeting of the NFHRCC on March 8, P Imty Ao (Contractor in charge of Wokha Sector), of Trident Enterprises, recieved a proposal from representatives of the 1st Class Contractors Union, Wokha to sublet the latter
around 27-kilometre stretch in the Wokha Sector. This was informed by representatives of the Union in today’s meeting, who were accompanied by a member of the Lotha Hoho, Kohima, to act as a mediator. It was stated that the Wokha contractors had personally approached P Imty Ao, early on Saturday morning, and was asked to enter into a contractual agreement declaring his assent. However, Imty Ao declined to sign any agreement without the prior consent of the NFHRCC. The Wokha contractors were thus asked to approach the NFHRCC, the representatives
said. The portion of road in question falls between Governor’s Camp and Changpang. Furthermore, it was informed that the 1st Class Contractors Union, Wokha had taken over the reins in the said sector on March 7. This revelation caught the NFHRCC off-guard, resulting in a five-hour long debate. The Wokha contractors’ bid was however not accepted by the house; while it was resolved that Imty Ao should immediately resume work “in order to avoid the debarment of contract bill in view of the agreement dated 18 January 2014.” It fur-
ther resolved that work started by the 1st Class Contractors Union, Wokha on March 7 at the Governor’s Camp-Changpang sector be immediately stopped. To hammer out the differences emerging from the latest contract bid, a joint meeting of the NFHRCC, 1st Class Contractors Union, Wokha and P. Imty Ao will be held soon, the NFHRCC informed. The NFHRCC further acknowledged the visit of the Road and Bridges Minister and the PWD (R & B) to the Foothill road construction sites on March 6 at Longtho (Mokokchung) and Wokha sectors.

Tzudir encouraged the gathering to be a woman who puts God first in everything. “Be a woman of substance, disci-
plined, and humble. Be revived and purified in the spirit, in culture and in understanding,” he urged. Posing questions for reflection, he asked, “Do you stand on the pride of past glory. Do you stand on the identity that you are an Ao woman?” The guest speaker for the IWD programme was Imtijungla Longchar, preacher and noted author. During the first session of the programme, she preached on the theme for the day, “Celebration of Women’s Fragrance”. She stated that fragrance is God’s invention, and that we are the aroma of Christ. To this end, she questioned the gathering, “Are you the bearer
of fragrance of Life or Death?” Taking references from the Bible, she compared women to earthen pots, which was used to store perfume. She also mentioned how the Bible records women, who were weak, broken, raped and had bad reputations. “But God favoured and loved them. He restored their lives,” she said. She encouraged the women to remember their roots and the sacrifices taken to reach the present state of well-being. “Do not take pride in your achievements but remember your past,” she urged. In the second session, Imtijungla called upon all Ao women to fight
against the ill practices prevalent in the society. She also asked for women to understand and utilize the power of prayers. She preached that a blend of prayers from women of varying and diverse background is what God wants the most. “All God wants from us is our sincere prayers,” she exhorted. “As women, we should get together and magnify the Word of God. Because, women of faith and strong prayers will have the sweetest fragrance in everything she does.” Groups of women representing various colonies from Dimapur area participated in the programme and presented special songs and entertaining features.

'Hand over 20 rescued children NPF to announce candidate for Outer Mnp today to Meghalaya chief secretary' cheNNaI, march 8 (TNN): Five months after 20 children from Meghalaya were 'rescued' from an unlicensed non-governmental organisation (NGO), where they had been housed without permission, Madras high court has ordered that the children be handed over to chief secretary of Meghalaya on March 13. Parents of the children could approach the chief secretary and reclaim custody of the children after due identification process, court said. A total of 20 children were allegedly trafficked from Meghalaya and kept at the NGO in Krishnagiri district bypassing mandatory procedures. They were rescued in October 2013 after social worker A Narayanan petitioned the authorities, and then
housed in a government home identified by district child welfare committee officials. They were later shifted to a licensed NGO -Nambikkai Natchathiram in Hosur -- and provided access to medical and educational facilities, as per high court orders. On Thursday, the first bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Satish K Agnihotri and Justice M M Sundresh, passing further orders on the writ petitions of Narayanan and others, including parents of some of the rescued children, then directed parents to approach the Meghalaya chief secretary, identify the children and take custody of their wards. "The Tamil Nadu Child Welfare Committee is directed to produce all the children under their cus-
tody on March 13, before the chief secretary, government of Meghalaya. Thereafter, the parents of the children shall appear before the chief secretary on March 13 to identify the children and establish their identity. On such establishment of identity, the chief secretary shall handover the custody of the children to their respective parents," the judges said. In order to ensure due compliance of the order, the judges said, "on completion of the exercise, the chief secretary shall submit a report before this court." They also recorded a statement from counsel for the chief secretary that adequate facilities were available to provide education to the rescued children. Keeping the educa-
tion of children in mind, the judges said the parents were at liberty to take their wards either to Meghalaya, or bring them back to Tamil Nadu in order to complete the present academic session in the same school where they are studying now. Once the chief secretary files his compliance report in court, the matter would be taken for further hearing to adjudicate other issues raised in the PIL of Narayanan. The PIL has sought crucial facilities as formation of child welfare committees and juvenile justice boards with adequate infrastructure and manpower in all districts and constitution of a special anti-human trafficking unit to probe cases of child trafficking from Odisha and Meghalaya.

recommended by the Parliamentary select committee and based on extensive consultations with various stakeholders, will be brought before the assembly in the current session. "In order to facilitate greater community participation in the monitoring of important government programmes and projects, another piece of legislation is being worked on. This will provide for social audits," Paul announced. Regarding the state's law and order situation, Paul said the increased activity of the Garo hills-based militant outfit, Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), and its "growing influence" in the region and parts of West Khasi hills was a "matter of serious concern". He, however, assured the assembly that the government had been making concerted efforts to "end the hardship
of the common people" and restore peace and normalcy in the Garo hills. "The settlement with A'chik National Volunteer Council (ANVC) has reached the final stages of approval by the Centre. The state government is keen on getting this done before the elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC)," he said. Iterating that ensuring peace, order and safety of common citizens was the "foremost duty" of the administration, Paul said the police force would be firm in dealing with "elements that indulge in unlawful activities". At the same time, the government would continue to engage in "sustained dialogue" with the agitating groups to find solutions to their problems, the governor added.

Women activists demand to remove AFSPA still unfulfilled
New delhI, march 8 (cNN-IBN): On women's day, CNN-IBN's Power of 49 series highlights how women, who form 49 per cent of the electorate, are wielding greater power in the upcoming 2014 Lok Sabha elections. However, in Manipur it seems politicians just pay lip service about women's empowerment and the major demand of women activists to remove AFSPA still remains an unfulfilled dream. Women of Manipur seems don't trust the political leaders and it became evident when Irom Sharmila who is on a fast for over 12 years against AFSPA said a clear no to the Aaam Admi Party's offer for a Lok Sabha ticket. People also seem to have forgotten Manorama Devi, the 32-year-old woman who was picked up from her home, brutally raped and murdered allegedly by Assam Rifles personnel in 2004. After 10 years Devi's mother is barely willing to answer any questions, but she is still hopeful that the family would get justice. "The Armed Forces Special Powers Act must go. An appeal to policy makers
e, the food producers of Nagaland, have been struggling to survive under conditions of poverty, food insecurity, erratic climate variations, shrinking land holdings and acute water scarcity. Women farmers face the first impact of these conditions, being the primary food cultivators and care-givers in Nagaland. Our farming systems have been sustaining us since ages but in the current context of invasive technology, profit maximization and rising inequalities, we need to equip ourselves with diverse skills and knowledge systems—we need to widen the policy framework based on these. To facilitate this through continued collaboration with the State, 90 women farmers and 33 men farmers have come together on March 7 and 8, 2014, at Chizami, Nagaland. Thus, the following points of recognition and action by Policy Makers within the Government have been collectively arrived on.

Nagaland Philatelic Exhibition 2014 ends Morung Express News Dimapur | March 8
The two-day Nagaland Philatelic Exhibition 2014 (NAGAPEX-14) being held at Don Bosco Higher Secondary School here concluded today. Postal Services, Nagaland organized the event to popularize stamp collection and philately among young people. Hence, there were workshop on philately, competitions on stamp design, letter writing and philatelic exhibition for school students at the event which started March 7. Speaking at the closing event
as guest of honour, F P Solo, Commissioner & Secretary, Higher & Technical Education, Government of Nagaland asserted philately is a very creative past time and generates lots of new ideas and innovations. Affirming that ideas, whether big or small always sell, he urged the students to dream as ideas start from dreams. To translate dreams into reality, he asked them to develop “scientific temper, spirit of enquiry, inquisitiveness, quest for knowledge, passion to acquire more and more knowledge.” He observed these qualities lacking in many people.
As students, he stated, one should develop more interest in studies, particularly science and mathematics. Referring to the recent report on education in Nagaland, the guest of honour said that Nagaland is doing quite well in terms of literacy and rate of enrolment, but lacking in many parameters of quality education. One concern, he pointed out was shortage of mathematics and science teachers. “If we do not find qualified, efficient teachers, we cannot expect our children to do well in science and mathematics.” Therefore, he urged the students to give suffi-
cient attention to mathematics and science and also consider teaching profession. He maintained that (science) students generally opt for engineering and other technical courses in Nagaland. On an average, the state gets about 200 technical graduates every year. However, he expressed that Nagaland being a small state has not many employment avenues for technical graduates and the unemployment rate among them is also quite high. He added that unlike technical graduates, a science graduate with mathematics as major or just a sub-

ACAUT Nagaland calls out ‘hypocrisy’ of NPGs
DIMApuR, MARCH 8 (Ap): The Action Committee against Unabated Taxation has stated that the slogan “Nagaland for Christ” is now associated with “all the wrong kinds of activities – unabated taxation, factional killings and mayhem.” Terming this as a “gross distortion of our faith,” it expressed amazement that the NPGs “routinely collect tax with these sacrosanct words stamped on the taxation slips and their writing pads with civil society reduced to mute bystanders.” “The sheer magnitude of this hypocrisy is not lost on many of us and is a staggering example of where we have faltered as a society,” it added. ACUAT Nagaland, in a press note, further questioned the “silence of the church on this burning issue,” and termed this as the prime issue “why young Nagas are simply skeptical of the Naga movement and the institution of the Church both.” As such it called upon the Nagaland Baptist Church
Council to condemn this activity, which it termed as “blasphemous.” ACAUT Nagaland stated that it “totally rejects the usage of the slogan “Nagaland for Christ” by the NPGs to legitimize its anti-people activities.” It condemned this “concerted attempt to legitimize what are essentially illegal activities by invoking divine sanction.” “Thus, any of the NPGs issuing tax demands u n d e r the cover of Nagaland for Christ is deemed anti-Naga,” it added. The Committee further condemned the practice of NPGs “employing Illegal Bangladeshi immigrants (IBIs) to carry out their extortion activities bearing these sanctimonious words in the taxation slips.” It viewed that “any other entity other than the church using Nagaland for Christ in nonspiritual matters is profaning our faith” and that “taxation activity under this banner is nothing but anti-Christian and antipeople.”

ello, my name is Sarah Hartshorne and I was a woman laughing alone with her salad. If that doesn't mean anything to you, visit this tumblr feed. Stock photography is awash with women laughing alone with their salads. In fact, there are really only four types of women in stock photography: the dieter, the multitasker, the mother and the sex object. The dieter is happy or sad about the measures she's taking to lose weight. The multi-tasker is usually wearing a suit and is always frazzled and struggling to "have it all". The mother and the sex object are self explanatory. While that may not seem like a big deal, it speaks volumes about the cultural expectations women are faced with, particularly in the workforce. Getty Images recently partnered with Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg's non-profit organization, to create a series of images that fight against these female stereotypes. The photographs show women and girls living their lives, with no caveats made to their gender. When we reduce women to dieters, multi-taskers, mothers and sex objects, we send the message that they are women first and human second. Anyone who isn't white faces a similar problem: they are first and foremost the color of their skin, and human second. White heterosexual males are the standard in our society, and anyone else is treated as other. And the "otherness" must be acknowledged before anything else. Of course, stock photography isn't to blame: it's a symptom of a larger condition within the media. Next time you open a fashion magazine, take a look at the difference between the male and female models. See how long it takes to find a female model that is both standing to her
full height and has her mouth closed. I'm writing this as a person who, to be honest, has been photographed with her mouth open quite a lot. I work as a plussize model and a comedian, which means I come face to face with a lot of gender bias. And it's always complicated. For example, I had a great time at the shoot where I ended up laughing at my salad. There were five of us; three women, two men, all young and attractive, being shot at a restaurant. We took some pictures as a group, as couples and as individuals. Sometimes we were looking at our phones, sometimes gesturing to an out of frame companion and sometimes, yes, laughing alone with our food. The shots that ended up being sold were the ones that conformed to gender stereotypes: the men were seen conducting business at lunch, and the women were passively smiling. That doesn't mean the photographers or the customers were prejudiced: it means we're all operating within a system that is. People often ask me if it's hard to be reduced to my appearance since, as a model, how I look is obviously all that matters. But here's the rub: all women are told from childhood on that how we look is all that matters. I have it easy: I know exactly why I do or don't get a job. Comedy, of course, is a whole other story. I'm constantly told that I'm too pretty to be doing standup and I'm supposed to take that as a compliment. And I hear over and over again from male comedians' that all women should be grateful for catcalls. Male attention is the highest possible reward, right? Again, I consider myself lucky. Being reduced to my appearance is literally my job, so there's nothing some guy on the street is going to say that's worse than a bitchy casting director. But other women have to overcome not only the bias of others but their own upbringing. A study by the Harvard Business Review revealed that women are taught from a young age to put the needs of others before their own, making them less likely to negotiate for themselves and ask for more money than men. We're teaching young women that they are a girl first and a human second. And that's really not something to laugh at. Sarah Hartshorne is a model and comedian.
Equality for women is progress for all "Countries with more gender equality have better economic growth. Companies with more women leaders perform better. Peace agreements that include women are more durable. Parliaments with more women enact more legislation on key social issues such as health, education, anti-discrimination and child support. The evidence is clear: equality for women means progress for all." Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General United Nations

female doctor recently told me that her husband, also a doctor, threatens to hit her and throw acid on her face if she ever "disobeys" him. She has thought of divorce many times, but the words of her father-in-law resonate in her mind: "We don't allow divorce, we burn the daughter-in-law instead." There is a separate women's compartment in the Delhi metro rail, because that's how much discomfort female Indians feel around men. When a woman is abused, many people claim that she invited it somehow, either by the clothes that she was wearing, or the person she was with, or the place she was at. Such beliefs can be found across the globe. But while violence against women takes place everywhere in the world, few societies witness it with as much regularity and severity as India. In a poll conducted in 2012 by a panel of gender specialists across the G20 nations, India was voted the worst country for women. The reason that India made it to the top of the list is because in India a woman is raped every 22 minutes, thousands of female fetuses are abort-
ed illegally every year, and thousands of women lose their lives due to dowry related abuse and honor killings. Crimes against women did not receive their due attention until December 2012 when a young paramedical student was brutally gang raped in Delhi. Since then the government has passed new sexual assault laws, including a mandatory minimum of 20 years for gang rape, and set up six fast track courts in Delhi for speedy proceedings in rape cases. New proposals for recruiting female police officers to make women one-third of the force have been put into place. Recently a state-run gun maker even went as far as to introduce a light weight gun, Nirbheek (meaning fearless), for women. And yet every month for the last year, news of assault and abuse of children, women, foreigners have been reported increasingly. The growing awareness of such cases is leading to more women having the courage to report assaults, although rape cases are still seriously under-reported. Indian women live with a debilitating sense of fear. This is because we live in a culture where sexual harassment is as regular as a daily cup of tea. Harsher new laws and establishing safe environments like the separate women compart-
ments in the Delhi metro are extremely important steps, but these can only do so much. Similarly, light weight guns are the privilege of the rich. Nor is promulgating a violent solution the answer. The root causes of violence and misogyny have to be dealt with. Domination by men over women everywhere, be it in relationships or at workplaces, is considered a birthright, literally. A belief of being superior, stronger and the main decisionmaker is inbred in most Indian males, both in rural as well as in urban areas. The public service message entitled "Stop creating rapists at home" addresses the fact that generations of men grow up witnessing and believing that female subjugation and male violence are regular social norms. So, the change has to start at home, at school and at work places. Children, both male and female, have to be taught from the beginning about the importance of equal status of both in the society. Education is an important tool, but equally important is that women are made aware of their identities and voices. Let's hope that my colleague files a complaint with the police against her husband and his family and that more women are ready to fight for their rights and identity. 5 life lessons from women in history

here are many things that our female ancestors had to endure that we take for granted now: the inability to vote or to hold public office, to own property, to get a formal education, to work, choose their profession or to control their own earnings, and even the right to choose whom to marry or whether to even marry at all. As I have written here before, March is Women’s History Month, and March 8 is International Women’s Day. Instead of writing about some of these inspirational women or giving a history lesson, I thought I’d share some of the life lessons these great women have, and continue to, teach me.

he popular misconception is that faith is opposed to reason. And so we think that if our faith is to increase, our reason must take a break. We often mistakenly think that we must fully exercise faith in God without questioning because questioning shows our lack of faith in God’s spoken word and instructions. So the basic premise with which we start is that the Bible is a book of faith, and must be approached solely by faith. This premise may lead to having many “spiritual” experiences, but I can assure you that your Christian life with not grow, and your faith will stagnate after a certain point of time. This sort of approach will eventually get stuck somewhere, because even though faith may seem to increase, you have left behind the very foundation of faith,—which is—increase in knowledge by making use of the faculty of your mind. Faith, in and of itself will not survive. Like anything else, it needs a strong foundation in which to stand and grow. What is that foundation? The Bibles say it is knowledge, and more specifically, knowledge of God’s revealed Word, and his created world. Our problem is that we do not use reason enough to understand God’s revealed Word and his created world. Let us see some examples: (1) Hebrews 11:3 says “By faith we understand.” Someone paraphrased this and said, “by faith we think.” The Bible is very clear that when our thinking goes in the right direction, our faith increases. But if we think that faith can increase by leaving reason behind, we are in serious trouble. Recently I heard someone talk about the “Naga way” of doing missions, where we simply go “by faith” without proper preparation like networking, creating a strong home base, and proper planning. We may experience a few miraculous deliverances here and there, but we will eventually end up in the wrong place, and even begin to lose faith because we think God has not been faithful enough in providing for our needs. We may even end up cursing God, but the real culprit is our lack of a proper reasoning process in planning. (2) Jesus said in Matthew 6:28, “Consider the lilies of the field.” Jesus, in trying to build faith in his hearers, does not say “ just believe and have faith, and everything will be OK.” He says think about the lilies of the fields, and the birds; consider how they live life without a care, and yet God takes care of them. Think about them, and think about yourself. Jesus’ argument is simple: if lilies, then why not you who are worth much more. There is nothing spiritual about Jesus’ argument. But who can counter such an argument based on facts of the created order. (3) Paul says (2 Corinthian 5:7), “we live by faith, not by sight”. Faith is contrasted to sight, not reason. The point is this: people lose faith not because they reason too much, but they lose faith because they see too many things they are not supposed to see, or they see it

here do I find my identity as a woman? It’s not the Proverbs 31 woman or Ruth—it’s God Himself. I was created in His image (Gen. 1:26-27) and am being conformed back to Christ’s (Rom. 8:28-30). In Scripture, the defining characteristics of the first woman—those things that make her utterly unique to her male counterpart—are inextricably tied to the character of her Creator. Knowing Him precedes knowing ourselves. If we want to understand our identity as women, we must first understand His identity as God. Genesis 1:26-27 says, "Then God said, 'Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.' So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them" (NIV). After Genesis 1 states the general idea of man and woman being created to bear the image of God, Genesis 2 zooms in on the creation of the first woman: "The Lord God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him'" (v. 18). This woman, created in the image of God, was designed to be a helper suitable to her male counterpart. When I read this in common English, it always sounds condescending and substandard. “I’m called to be help? That sounds like some 18th-century snob referring to their servants! I’m not 'the help.'” But that is simply because our English translation can’t do justice to the Hebrew term. Instead, think of the Man of Sorrows carrying His cross toward Gethsemane. As He

he boy screeched howling and yowling, “Lucifer is my king” facing the sky. He scratched the floor as hard as a wolf leaving the prints of claws as though of XMen, yet not a scrape on his fingers or nails. He yelled in hoot and holler, bumping and thumping the floor and the wall whenever the name of Jesus was uttered. He growled and roared as an injured lion at the counsellors when he heard them chanted in tears, “Jesus loves you.” A counsellor drew closer to pat him to appease him and to tell him it is okay but he hit his hands off to make it clear he don’t want love and care. He anathematized Jesus with all possible foul languages, denouncing and cursing the very person who will deliver him in a few hours from horror. His body rigid and strong, his spirit unyielding, his will unwavering, his emotions wounding, his language profaning, his eyes horrifying, he went down to his knees in tears moaning and groaning. Before long he squawked, “Lucifer, help me. Give me back my powers” smashing the floor with both his hands repeatedly. Lucifer never turned up for the rescue. Lucifer cannot because God, Most High arrested the boy with His power to set him free from the clutches of darkness. The ambiance was bloodcurdling but thanks to the presence and the power of the Holy Spirit that hovered and soaked the soul of the elect with faith and courage. The boy was delivered in the mighty name of Jesus. This paranormal phenomenon was eerie and spine-chilling. It smashed my skeptical sense. It gave me a new perspective on the reali-

Faith Vs Reason
what we see around us tells us otherwise. Hence, Paul’s assertion that we live by faith [strengthened by proper reasoning], not by sight [affected by emotions]. I hope now you see that ours is not a blind faith, but a faith firmly based on truth about God and how he relates to his creatures. Engagement with truth requires a fairly good thinking and reasoning power. In the following section, I will share some simple steps on how we can increase our intellectual power so that our faith will be unshaken.
(1) Solitude and Silence: I think the best way develop your mind is to shut up and shut out the world as often as possible and just engage in reading books, interacting with what you read in silence and solitude. You can also pray along as you read and interact with the book[s] asking God to give you understanding power and increased concentration. For some of us, this is what we often call “quiet time”. Of course, read the Bible and argue with it too, but do not forget to take it to the Lord in prayer. The more often you do this, the easier it will become to deal with the noise and distractions around. Noise and distractions include everything from mobiles phones to a itching back or a noisy neighbour. But learning not to be distracted is an intellectual disciplines itself. (2) Observation and Dialogue: Of source, solitude and silence is just one part of intellectual development. Other important disciplines will include observation of the world and trends around, and dialogue with the right kind of people. We may have a fairly good knowledge of the Bible, or any other subject matter, but it is in observation and dialogue that we actually learn proper application of knowledge. If we can learn to do this, we can attain a higher level of the intellectual discipline, —which is—of connecting of ideas, or connecting of truth with issues and problems around us. Then we are not just observing or dialoguing, but also discovering solutions. Kedo Peseyie
from the wrong premise. For example, we may look at the progress in the world where people get rich by unfair means, or we may see the suffering in the world and say God does not care one bit. Our sight has affected our faith. But when we think about the lilies and birds and use our reason to discover that we are worth much more than them, and connect them to God’s promises in the Bible, our faith is enriched. We find that it is not difficult to believe in a God who cares and who will restore all things eventually. Therefore, we can wait in faith, reasoning that God will never abandon his creation, even though
(3) Calculative and Meditative Thinking (James W. Sire, “Habits of the Mind”): James Sire mentions two kinds of thinking: meditative thinking and calculative thinking. Calculative thinking is the kind of thinking we do which only connects us with our needs and wants and engages us in thinking about how materials and money can be acquired for our consumption. It is selfish and does not allow us to go beyond ourselves. In meditative thinking we connect with God the Creator and it helps us to see the whole of life from the eternal perspective. Someone said that today calculative thinking is the only way people are taught to think. How true. And how sad! We can learn the art of meditative thinking by connecting everything we hear and see around us with God and God’s plan as revealed in the Bible. This will require knowing the Bible and knowing the world, and connecting them, one giving more meaning to the other.

Discover your identity as a woman in God
stumbles, Simon of Cyrene steps in to carry it with (or for) Him. This is a much closer picture of the biblical concept of 'help.' It does not mean being a maid. It is more like being a crutch. It does not mean being a mindless sidekick, waiting on an order. It is Morpheus or Trinity to the Matrix’s Neo. The Hebrew word indicates strength. The Hebrew term for helper is most often used in the Old Testament of God Himself, which makes sense since the woman was created to bear the image of God. Consider its use in Deuteronomy 33:29: "Blessed are you, Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord? He is your shield and helper and your glorious sword. Your enemies will cower before you, and you will tread on their heights." God Himself is called our "helper," the same Hebrew word used of the first woman in Genesis 2:18. In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit is also called our helper, counselor, and comforter (depending on which translation of the Bible you use). These are all translations of the Holy Spirit’s role of paraklete, or "one who comes alongside in aid." When we understand God’s role on this issue, it puts things in perspective. God, the Almighty Sovereign Lord of the universe, is our helper, and we, as women, are created in His image. If I hold on to the attitude that being created as a helper is condescending and substandard, I am basically mocking the name of God and His character, for the role of helper is one He willingly embraces. God, our help, defends (Ex. 18:4), cares for the oppressed (Ps. 10:14), delivers from

distress (Ps. 70:5), rescues the poor and needy (Ps. 72:12-14), comforts (Ps. 86:17) and supports, shields and protects (Ps. 20:2; 33:20). God’s example reveals a high and worthy calling for women as helpers suitable to their husbands. We are not glorified maids, butlers or cooks waiting on an order to perform from a master. This is not God’s example of help at all! We are called to show compassion and to support, defend and protect those in our care. We are called to deliver them from distress and to comfort them. We are called to be conduits of God’s grace in our homes. We are called to be like Christ. There is a sense in which God’s call to us is a general call to be strong helpers and advocates in widespread ways. My help extends to my children, my neighbor and the stranger God brings across my path, as He taught in the parable of the Good Samaritan. But there is also a very strategic application of this help that I'm called to offer. Eve was created to help her particular husband. I remember asking my husband one day, “What would you find helpful?” To put the question in context, I had heard much from various sources about what a Christian woman was supposed to do for her husband. I found myself judging how well I was doing by comparing myself to friends, women’s ministry leaders, book authors and so forth. If any of them suggested what I thought was a better method of fulfilling my role

endy Griffith is beautiful and has a glamorous job but has experienced a devastating heartbreak and the ups and downs of dating. She shares her story in You Are a Prize to Be Won, which has been released in time for Valentine’s Day. A CBN news anchor, Griffith shares advice learned the hard way of dating a noncommittal man who broke up with her because he knew he was going to marry her. My favorite chapters are “The Dangers of Recreational Kissing” and “Purity Is Sexy.” Griffith is her 40s and knows the challenges of dating with standards set by the Bible as far physical intimacy goes. The book is chock full of sound advice on how to date without compromising your Christian faith. In the chapter “Avoid the Counterfeit,” she offers these three steps: 1. A man’s intentions and feelings about you should be clear. You shouldn’t be forced to guess how he feels about you. The counterfeit guy I dated told me month after month, “God keeps telling me, ‘One day at a time.’” But if a guy doesn’t know what his intentions are after several months of dating, he’s “playing you, not planning with you,” as author and comedian Steve Harvey says. Yes, I bought the “one day at a time” thing, and now I know what was happening—I was being played! Sometimes we have to learn things the hard way. 2. Listen to God. God will warn you. He loves you. He wants you to make good decisions, especially when it comes to your love life. I ignored numerous warning dreams from the Lord because they didn’t fit in with my fairy-tale plans. Don’t ignore the little promptings, the red flags and the warning dreams. However God speaks to you, pay close attention. We often need God’s help to discern the real thing from the counterfeit. 3. Make sure a man’s words are consistent with his actions. “I love you,” “I miss you” and “I need you” all sound wonderful, but they only ring true if a man’s words match his actions. After months of “I love yous,” if a guy’s not popping the question to you, chances are that he’s not really serious about you. Sincerity is proven by action. If you find a man consistent in his pursuit of you who puts his words into action, you may have just found “the one.” Griffith includes entries from her journal and stories of covering Hurricane Katrina and visiting the Philippines to follow up the Gracia Burnham story. Every chapter ends with questions for personal reflection. This is a great read for singles in every situation—widowed, divorced, young or older—as there is wisdom for everyone. in my home, I either worked to adopt it or beat myself up for my laziness for not doing it. When my husband and I talked about it, though, I realized he longed for my help in the strongest sense of the term—but I was constrained by the lesser expectations of others that distracted me from helping him in the ways he needed. When I ask my husband what I can do for him on a particular day, he often tells me to simply “keep calm and carry on.” He needs me to be strong and face the chaos of the day with two small boys with calm responses. He needs me to defend and protect, to rescue and comfort, to support and care for those who can’t care for themselves. He needs me to minister to our family like God, our help, ministers to me. This may be painful to hear if you are single, widowed or divorced. But you, too, are God’s strong helper though you do not have a particular man to whom to direct it. Throughout Scripture, women helped. Ruth helped Naomi. Mary helped Jesus. Phoebe helped Paul. Lois and Eunice helped Timothy. I do not trivialize the reality in which you find yourself. As God said in the garden and you well know by your own life experience, it is not good for man (or woman) to be alone. If you find yourself in this state of aloneness that God declared “not good,” you are in good, godly company. The gospel of Christ meets us in all of these realities. The single woman who longs to be married. The married woman who longs to have a husband who loves her as Christ loves
the church. The divorced woman whose marriage ended in betrayal. The widow who feels the hole in her heart daily. The truth for all of us is that the fall of man has marred the image of God in us. We are not who He created us to be. And the fall of man has marred the environment in which we live. Others around us are not what He created them to be, either. Loved ones betray. Loved ones die. And sometimes loved ones simply never show up. But in Christ, we start to see the reclamation of His image in us through redemption. In Ephesians 1 and 2, the apostle Paul lays out for us all that Christ’s death on the cross has accomplished for us. He expounds on it more in Ephesians 3 and 4. Then he opens Ephesians 5 with the amazing phrase, “Therefore be imitators of God” (NKJV). Finally, we have the tool for bridging the vast gulf between our created image in Genesis 2 and the fall of Genesis 3! Now, in Christ, we start to reclaim His image in us, and Paul fleshes out what this looks like across the board—husband, wife, parent, child, co-worker, boss and every relationship within the church. I can’t fully articulate in this short article how exactly the gospel does this for us. Paul sets the foundation for how God does it in six chapters in Ephesians, and I have spent much time studying it there. But living it out daily will require a lifetime of gospel meditation and transformation until finally I see Jesus face to face in perfection. Today, I am simply asking God in prayer how the gospel equips me to reclaim His image in my life and what it looks like to live it out as a strong helper in my relationships. I trust He will meet us all in this prayer with wisdom for this day’s struggles as a women after God’s own heart.
Satanism in Nagaland: Putting it into Perspective
ties of Satan in our land. This write up does not aspire to give exhaustive details on different aspects of Satanism, not even in aspects which it addresses below. The ambit is to give the readers a bird’s eye view of Satanism in our land till date.
The Crisis It is no juvenile’s prank to burn the bible, eat raw meat, sneak out naked at midnight enchanting hocus-pocus. It is no teenage gang’s game to curse Jesus and knelt with tears to call on Lucifer and demons to come for help when no one is abusing him physically not even verbally but just praying for him, telling him about the love of God. The prayer warriors are not misguided to tell the public it is the work of Satan when they see young teenage girls challenging them in the name of Lucifer, ridiculing and mimicking their prayers. It is no unstable emotions or psychic disorder when the eyes of the boy turn devilish red out of the blue while praying making wacky groans and moans, other times crawling and rolling on the floor chanting the name of Lucifer (nobody pushed him), or collapse with foams all over his mouth during praise and worship, who has no history of epilepsy whatsoever. It is no overreaction to a normal spiritual phenom when a girl starts speaking in a heavy tone referring to herself in third person (I will kill her) and guffaws at the sight of the bible and screams at counsellors to shut up and not to take the Name of Jesus.

My nous on Nagas and the Bible
The writer is currently doing his Master of Theology (Th.m) majoring in Biblical Theology in Asian Christian Academy and also works with Christ in Youth Team, Kohima.
The above events happened in real time. The reality of Satanism in Nagaland is nailed when former Satanists daringly testified their experience with the horror. It is a crisis in the church, a doom-laden for the clergy, and depravity at its zenith in the young souls of our land. It is no hoax that Satanism has invaded our land.
so as to gain power from Satan to put an end to her misery. This sob story covers the major aspects of why and the wherefores of the horror among youngsters. First, the family crisis, a former Satanist told me that family crisis; being unloved, abused and rejected in family is one main cause. Second, she had supernatural fantasy and hankering. She wanted and craved for power. This desire for power is usually created because of ghoulish and power games in gadgets and certain animated shows on television. Third, she desired a devilish delight. She sought for a diabolical favour. These favours can range from money, fame, power and anything. She allowed the devil to solve her problem in return sold her soul to him.
The Cause Every Satanist has a personal reason when probed on why they get into this morbid trend. I sympathized with this girl when she told me her sorry tale. She adopted Satanism because she couldn’t stand the miseries of her family. Her elder brother was an abusive chronic alcoholic. In addition she felt rejected and unloved by her siblings and parents. Long story short, she was desperate for a panacea to all her family chaos. At the end The Contract of her tether she embraced Satanism A person is initiated into Satan-
ism with a contract. On mutual accord between the person and Satan, the covenant is cut. It can be done in diverse ways. Three prominent methods found in Nagaland are: First, the person has to cut himself/herself and pour his/her own blood in places where the devil tells him/her to. Second, the devil shows certain symbols with meaning to be tattooed to the body. This is known as the Tattoo Covenant. Third, the devil demands the person to sign on certain things and enchant certain demonic creed. Once the contract is done, the Devil assigns certain demons to the Satanist according to desire or demand, it depends. The demons work for the Satanist. The Satanist uses the demons in the form of spell, charm and power. There are also ranks and clans in Satanism. The prominent clans in Nagaland are werewolf and vampire (it is not like the ones you see in media, it is spiritual). I am yet to see a clear ranking among the Satanist in our land. The Cure There is only one cure for the Satanist. The person has to repent and renounce Satan and his demons. He/she needs to confess his/ her sins and come to Jesus to be cleansed by His blood. That being done, the prayer of the believers in Jesus Name is needed for complete deliverance. This is where it gets messy and manifestation of all sorts comes. The demons won’t leave easy until they are exorcised in Jesus name.
The Caution - Do not say it is not happening when it is. - Do not blame it all on the clergy and church when the devil is at work. - Do not claim that the people of your Tribe or Denomination are not involved when all are in it. - Do not spread rumours on hearsay and escalate the chaos when it already is. - Do not allege Satan is exalted when a person talks about Satanism when the men of God are at work to demolish demons. - Do not label all demon-possessed as Satanist when they are not.
The Care The cliché applies, “prevention is better than cure.” We couldn’t prevent the past but we sure can for the present and the future. It should start from our family. Show love and practice love in the family. The church should take care of its flocks. Practice care for the lost and weary in the house of God. The clergy should serve to save the sheep. Sound teaching and prayer can guard the soul. Equal or more love, care, and service should be given to both present and former Satanist. They shouldn’t be shunned in church or stigmatized in the society instead, soak them with the love of God. Our love can loosen them, our care can cure them and our service can save them. When Satanism is real in our land, the best we can do is to love, care and serve with the power of God. This love, care, and service has to be across culture, tribe, and denomination.

2014 polls: Congress down, BJP far from Mission 272
Amulya Ganguli
Next month’s general elections may prove to be the most significant ever because they can determine the fate of the Congress’ first family. It is open to question whether in the event of the party’s defeat, as is anticipated, the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty can continue to play its present dominant role. True, the family has survived other setbacks, notably in 1977 and in 1989. But it had the advantage in those days of being headed by charismatic leaders. That was the reason the Congress survived the crushing blows it received in 1977 to return to power in 1980 by raising its tally of Lok Sabha seats from 153 to 353. Four years later, its tally went up to 415 under another popular leader, Rajiv Gandhi. This time, however, the party cannot claim that it is led by widely acclaimed leaders. Neither Sonia Gandhi nor Rahul Gandhi have the appeal and commanding personality of Indira Gandhi, or the charm and modern
outlook of Rajiv Gandhi till he was tarred by the Bofors howitzer scandal. There is another disadvantage for the Congress this time. Its 1977 defeat was at the hands of a hastily assembled group of parties ranging from disgruntled Congressmen like Morarji Desai, angry over Indira Gandhi’s rise in the party, to the Jana Sangh (now BJP) which merged with the newly-formed Janata Party. Moreover, the latter’s inability to provide a semblance of effective governance revived Indira Gandhi’s image even as the popular anger against her emergency rule of 1975-77 subsided. In 1984, a sympathy wave over her assassination, coupled with Rajiv Gandhi’s Mr. Clean image, helped the Congress. No such extraordinary circumstances - suppression of civil rights or a tragic death - exist now. Instead, a replay of the Bofors scam on a far wider scale along with economic slowdown has eroded the Congress’ standing. If the party had leaders who were in sync with an aspirational India, the scene might have been dif-
ferent. But Sonia Gandhi does not seem to have outgrown the years when she lived as a young bride in Indira Gandhi’s household. The ideas which she imbibed from her formidable mother-in-law - socialism as an ideology and cynicism as policy - continue to influence her. Not only that, she has passed them on to Rahul Gandhi, who may be well-meaning and compassionate, as Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said on television, but not particularly politically astute or with economic insight. The result is that mother and son are unable to comprehend that the country has changed since 1991 because of the opening up of the economy. The common people are no longer enamoured of official sops and subsidies. Instead, they look to economic growth and increased opportunities for their livelihood. In the event of a setback, therefore, the dynasty’s flawed understanding of the political scene is bound to be questioned. But the jury is out on whether Congressmen, so long dependent on the family for guid-
ance, will find the courage to break free. However, there is a silver lining for the Congress. It is the scene reminiscent of 1977 and 1989 and also the period between 1996 and 1998, when there was no stable government at the centre. Although the Bharatiya JanataParty’sNarendraModi is well ahead of Rahul Gandhi in the prime ministerial race, according the opinion polls, there is still no certainty that the BJP will be able to accomplish its “Mission 272-plus”, as it highlighted at a recent convention. It will be happy if it can reach the 182-mark which it did in 1998 and 1999, but there are doubts on this score. Even if, for argument’s sake, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the BJP wins 200-odd seats, the party’s chances of attracting allies from outside the NDA which can enable it to reach 272 are not very high. So far the BJP has only been able to bring the Lok Janshakti Party to its side, but it is a poor compensation for the Janata Dal-United which left the NDA on the Modi issue. The group
uNiteD NatiONS, March 8 (pti): India is placed at 111th position out of 189 countries in a list prepared by an international organisation that ranks nations on the number of women representatives in parliament. The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), an international organisation of parliaments, said in its annual analysis that more women than ever before are being elected to parliaments around the world, with gender parity likely achievable in less than a generation if the current trend continues. The IPU, which works closely with the United Nations, ranks countries on the number of women members in parliament. India ranked 111th with 62 women parliamentarians
sitting in the Lok Sabha, a small 11.4 per cent of the total 545 MPs. The Rajya Sabha of 245 MPs has 28 women parliamentarians, a 11.4 per cent of the total. The annual analysis of statistics and trends, released yesterday ahead of International Women’s Day, said there was a 1.5 percentage increase globally in Parliaments as a result of elections that took place in 2013. “That doesn’t sound like a lot, but if you consider that we are now at almost 22 per cent of women in parliaments, if we were to continue with this rate of increase of 1.5 it means that within a generation, actually within 20 years, we should be able to reach globally gender parity in parliament,” IPU Secretary-General Anders Johnsson said.
“That is something we never imagined. Rwanda led the list of 189 countries surveyed, with its lower house recording more than 60 per cent women,” Johnsson said. The report said several factors influenced the degree of women’s access to parliament, with quotas being one of the main tools to facilitate women’s access. “Quotas must be ambitious, detailed and be implemented to have impact,” IPU said. UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka lauded the “record-breaking” increase by the gains made by women in political life around the world and vowed that the organisation will keep fighting gender-based bias. “The record-breaking increase of women in national parliaments in
2013 is encouraging, but we are still far from equality,” Mlambo-Ngcuka said. “Around the world, women are excluded from parliaments by discrimination, violence, party structures, poverty and a lack of finance,” she said. The data has been compiled on the basis of information provided by National Parliaments by January 1, 2014. As a region, Latin America recorded the highest electoral gain with women in Ecuador, Grenada and Argentina occupying more than 30 per cent in those three countries. However, the US ranked 83rd and Canada was 54th. China recorded a two percentage point increase. Nepal, with the highest percentage of women MPs in South Asia came in at just under 30 per cent.

Five Indians on board missing Malaysian airliner
Kuala luMpur, March 8 (iaNS): Five Indians are among the 239 passengers on board the Malaysia Airlines plane that went missing when it was on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing early Saturday. According to the passenger manifesto, the Indians on board are Vinod Kolekar, 59, Chetana Kolekar, 55, Swanand Kolekar, 23, Chandrika Sharma, 51, and Kranti Shirsath, 44. Flight MH 370, a Boeing 777-200 aircraft, took off from Kuala Lumpur at 12:21 a.m. local time and was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m. local time but lost contact with ground control two hours after take-off. Even as anxious relatives thronged the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, the location of the aircraft remains unknown. According to the airline’s website, there are 227 passengers of 14 nationalities on board, including two infants. All crew members are Malaysians Apart from the five Indians, there are 154 Chinese, 38 Malaysians, seven Indonesians, six Australians, four Americans, three French, two New Zealanders, two Ukrainians, two Canadians, one Russian, one Italian, one Dutch and one Austrian on board.
Need to change mental and moral make-up, says President
New Delhi, March 8 (iaNS): President Pranab Mukherjee Saturday said that legislation alone cannot emancipate women and stressed on the need for a fundamental re-setting of mental and moral make-up, civic sense and social conduct. “We must do all that we can to revive our tradition of according due honour and respect to our mothers and sisters, by doing so we will honour ourselves,” Mukherjee said while presenting the Stree Shakti Puruskar, 2013 on the occasion of International Women’s Day at Rashtrapati Bhavan here. Recognising six women for their excellence and achievements in the field of social development, Mukherjee said women have through their individual efforts made contributions, big and small, to build the India of today. Making a special mention of women in the agriculture sector, he said: “I would like to make a special mention of the women in our agricultural sector -- who are the mainstay of India’s food security -- and also the scores of women workers who toil shoulder to shoulder with men in building, brick by brick, the mighty physical infrastructure of our country.” Adding that strengthening local government institutions has brought more than 10 lakh women into the panchayats and urban local bodies, Mukherjee said that though it is a notable step towards the political empowerment of women, it should not divert attention from “the most reprehensible violations of the rights and dignity of women in India by our own people”. “It is hard to comprehend that anyone who has been brought up with Indian values could engage in the savagery that comes to light every single day,” the president said. “Despite the numerous legislations enacted and amendments made in the existing laws by the central and state governments to safeguard women, there is still much to be done to provide our women and girl children a semblance of the safety and security that a civilized society should guarantee,” he added.

of minor Tamil Nadu parties which have joined the BJP cannot add much to the NDA’s final tally. Besides, L.K. Advani has reiteratedhisoldreservations about Modi by saying that the party has become a one-man show while Sushma Swaraj, another of the earlier detractors, has been displeased with
the wooing of what she calls tainted individuals. Evidently, the scene is not as hunky-dory as the BJP may wish even if one ignores the surprising success of the Congress’s student wing in the Gujarat university polls where it routed the BJP’s affiliate. If the BJP can only ex-
pect to be the largest party in the Lok Sabha with the NDA falling well short of the majority, the other challenger to the Congress, the so-called Third Front, may not be able to get off the ground at all. AlreadyTamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s ties with the Left parties have collapsed
and the Janata Dal-United’s Sharad Yadav has said that he has low expectations from the formation. As in 1977 and 1989, the inability of the Congress opponents to get their acts together can boost the party’s prospects for the next general election a year or two later.
New Delhi, March 8 (iaNS): On the occasion of the International Women’s Day, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi Saturday India can never aspire to be a superpower without empowering its women. “On the International Women’s Day, I want to take this opportunity to congratulate all the women in
our country and across the world, who have worked tirelessly to bring the fight for women’s empowerment onto the global agenda,” Gandhi said. He said “much more needs to be done to ensure that women have their rightful place in society”. Gandhi, who has often spoken of women empowerment in his speeches, said
women must find their place in positions of leadership in politics, business and social spheres. “As I have often said, India can never aspire to be a superpowerwithoutempowering its women. This empowerment must be reflected at all levels,” Gandhi said. He said the government, civil society and the political class have a critical role to
play in ensuring that women have the rights and opportunities that propel them forward. “But more than anything else this is a fight to change mindsets, and in that each one of us - ordinary women and men - have a big role to play. Let us renew our pledge today to bringing about this change in the hearts and minds of people.”
New Delhi, March 8 (iaNS): BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi Saturday said discrimination was a big problem faced by women and called for them to have freedom to make choices about their career and marriage. Interacting with women from different parts of the country through video conferencing at “Chai pe
Charcha (discussion on tea)” at the Bharatiya Janata Party office here, Modi said that there should be more women in legal profession as well as in police. “One of the big problems is discrimination. There is one attitude towards the son and another towards the daughter. To end this discrimination, there is need of social awareness,” he said. Modi
said there should be “no compromise attitude” on issues concerning women. “(They) should have freedom of birth, freedom of education...freedom to choose time of marriage, freedom to choose career. They should have a say in deciding the size of family,” he said. BJP leaders said that women from several locations in the country were taking part in the sec-
ond round of “Chai pe Charcha” with Modi. The event was organised on International Women’s Day. The “Chai pe Charcha” programme is an effort by BJP to woo voters ahead of Lok Sabha elections, in context of Modi’s references to his humble origins as “tea seller” and the attacks by some opposition parties on him on this issue.

IndiGo plane catches fire in Kathmandu, 182 on board safe
KathMaNDu/New Delhi, March 8 (iaNS): An IndiGo airlines aircraft from New Delhi caught fire after landing at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) Saturday afternoon but all 182 people on board were evacuated safely. According to the airline, IndiGo flight 6E031 from Delhi to Kathmandu with 175 passengers, one infant and six crew members made a normal landing at Kathmandu airport. “After parking, the ground engineer observed smoke and fire from the right brake assembly and advised evacuation of all passengers and crew. One hundred and seventy-one passengers were evacuated by the slide-chute, by which time the fire was brought under control. The remaining
passengers and crew left the aircraft by the forward step ladder,” the airline said in a statement released in New Delhi. “All passengers were evacuated by the IndiGo crew in 81 seconds. All 175 passengers, one infant and six crew members are safe.” The airline said that it was in touch with the Indian civil aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to seek permission for sending another aircraft to bring back the passengers booked on the Kathmandu-Delhi flight. According to a Xinhua report, the aircraft, an Airbus A-320, caught fire immediately after landing at the airport. TIA general manager Rishikesh Sharma told the media that the fire was immediately controlled.
AAP has given India hope: Gandhi’s grandson Rajmohan
New Delhi, March 8 (iaNS): Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Rajmohan Gandhi, who exited from the political scene after losing to then prime minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1989, has decided on a second plunge into politics as an AAP candidate for the Lok Sabha poll because he sees “hope” in the party that has emerged as a “new force” in Indian politics. “India was truly sick with corruption and the Aam Aadmi Party has suddenly given hope to the country. The party is very much in line with what I have been trying to do for the last 60 years,” Gandhi, 78, told IANS in an interview at AAP’s local office in East Delhi. “AAP is the first new force that has emerged as a completely all-India party and no one is excluded from it” he added. AAP has decided to pit Gandhi - better known as a scholar and
historian rather than as a mass leader - against Congress MP Sandeep Dikshit in the East Delhi constituency. Dikshit is the son of Congress leader and Delhi’s three-time chief minister Sheila Dikshit, whose party’s rout in last year’s assembly elections and AAP’s spectacular debut stunned the entire country. Gandhi, who divides his time between the India and the US where he was a research professor at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, finds AAP founder Arvind Kejriwal “remarkable” and “fearless”. “Arvind Kejriwal has a position in India which is quite remarkable. He is quite fearless, he has got drive, he has got energy and his political work was preceded by a very patient community organisation work in Delhi,” Gandhi noted. Asked how he would
take on established political parties like the Congress and the BJP, Gandhi said: “The majority doesn’t know what I have done in my life. At the same time, this constituency knows about AAP.” With just over a month before Delhi votes in the general election, Gandhi has begun his campaigning and been travelling in the constituency to drum up support. The mild-mannered author of several books on history says that his political battle against Rajiv Gandhi in Amethi in 1989 was “symbolic”. “I was contesting against Rajiv Gandhi because the Janata Dal thought that he deserved a challenge, but nobody expected me to win. There was Bofors, there was corruption,” he said. “Today it is completely different. AAP is expected to win in Delhi. I don’t know how many seats we will get in the Lok Sabha, but we will
get a number which will surprise most people.” Gandhi said. On his assessment of the BJP and its prime min-

New Delhi, March 8 (iaNS): A young man Saturday smeared ink on AAP leader Yogendra Yadav’s face after springing from behind at a party rally here to mark International Women’s Day. The attacker, identified by police as Sagar Bhandari, leaped on the stage where Yadav was seated and talking to the media. The man wore the trademark white cap of the Aam Aadmi Party. Before Yadav and AAP mem-
bers around him could realize what was happening, the man repeatedly smeared ink on Yadav’s face, temporarily blinding him. It took four or five seconds before others came to Yadav’s rescue, pushing away the attacker who was then roughed up. Police quickly intervened and took him away. A police officer said Bhandari was apparently “a disgruntled AAP worker”. Yadav, the AAP candidate in
the Lok Sabha election in Gurgaon in Haryana, was clearly stunned. “I was talking to you when this person came from behind and put ink on my face,” he told journalists near Jantar Mantar where the meeting was held. “I did not see him... I mean how could I see him.” He added: “When you take on powerful forces in this country, one must be ready to pay a price. May God forgive this man (attacker).”

Oil slicks found in hunt for missing Malaysia jet
A woman wipes her tears after walking out of the reception center and holding area for family and friend of passengers aboard a missing Malaysia Airlines plane, at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang, outside Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on March 8. (AP Photo)
KuALA LuMPur, MArcH 8 (AP): Vietnamese air force planes on Saturday spotted two large oil slicks close to where a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 went missing earlier in the day, the first sign that the aircraft carrying 239 people had crashed. The air force planes were part of a multinational search operation launched after Flight MH370 fell off radar screens less than an hour after it took off from Kuala Lumpur for Beijing early Saturday morning. The oil slicks were spotted late Saturday off the southern tip of Vietnam and were each between 10 kilometers (6 miles) and 15 kilometers (9 miles) long, the Vietnamese government said in a statement. There was no confirmation that the slicks were related to the missing plane, but the statement said they were consistent with the kinds that would be produced by the two fuel tanks of a crashed jetliner. Two-thirds of the missing plane’s passengers were from China, while others were from elsewhere in Asia, North America and Europe. Malaysia Airlines CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said there was no indication that the pilots had sent a distress signal, suggesting that whatever happened to the plane occurred quickly and possibly catastrophically. Asked whether terrorism was suspected, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said, “We are looking at all possibilities, but it is too early to make any conclusive remarks.” Foreign ministry officials in Italy and Austria said the names of two nationals from those countries listed on the flight’s manifest matched passports reported stolen in Thailand. Italy’s Foreign Ministry said the Italian man who was listed as being a passenger, Luigi Maraldi, was traveling in Thailand and was not aboard the plane. It said he reported his passport stolen last August. At Beijing’s airport, authorities posted a notice asking relatives and friends of passengers to gather at a nearby hotel to wait for further information, and provided a shuttle bus service. A woman wept aboard the bus while saying on a mobile phone, “They want us to go to the hotel. It cannot be good.” The plane was last detected on radar at 1:30 a.m. (1730 GMT Friday) around where the South China Sea meets the Gulf of Thailand, authorities in Malaysia and Vietnam said. Lai Xuan Thanh, director of Vietnam’s civil aviation authority, said air traffic officials in the country never made contact with the plane. The plane “lost all contact and radar signal one minute before it entered Vietnam’s air traffic control,” Lt. Gen. Vo Van Tuan, deputy chief of staff of the Vietnamese army, said in a statement.
Putin’s body language studied for clues to decision-making: Pentagon
WASHINGTON, MArcH 8 (reuTerS): It turns out all those years Russian leader Vladimir Putin was cavorting bare-chested outdoors, demonstrating his judo skills and darting whales, a Pentagon researcher may have been studying him for clues to his behavior. The Office of Net Assessments, a sort of internal think tank for the U.S. secretary of defense, has spent $300,000 annually since 2009 for research to study the body language and movement patterns of key global leaders, one of them being Putin, who has served as Russia’s president and prime minister. Admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon’s chief spokesman, said Putin had been studied in 2008, along with Russia’s then-President Dmitry Medvedev, and again in 2012. He denied news reports implying there was an ongoing study of Putin in connection with the current crisis in Ukraine, and said the reports on Putin “have not informed any policy decisions by the Department of Defense.” “We didn’t ... commission a study to study Vladimir Putin’s body language,” Kirby told a news conference. “The researcher ... determines the identity of the individuals that she wants to look at on her own.” “There’s been no study of Vladimir Putin with respect to the recent crisis in Ukraine,” he added. mKirby said he had not seen the researcher’s reports and did not know who in the Pentagon had read them. He said the reports are delivered to the Office of Net Assessments, and like much of its other research do not get circulated widely. The research on foreign leaders has been conducted for years and at one point was carried out within the State Department, officials said. In the past 10 years, approximately 40 reports have been done on different leaders, a defense official said. m“It’s a research program that examines the ... body movements and body language of various world figures to determine a better understanding of their decision making process,” Kirby told the news conference. Officials identified the lead researcher as Brenda Connors, a fellow at the Naval War College in Rhode Island and certified movement analyst, who conducts the studies with a small team. While her reports have not been made public, she has written newspaper articles on Putin that were based on her research and were cleared by the Pentagon, officials said.m One 2004 article published in the Providence Journal in Rhode Island described Putin’s movement style as one that “shows a man struggling to move forward - a weakness that is proving to be an impediment to both his leadership and Russia’s future.” The article said by looking at videotapes in split-second detail it was possible to “discover a person’s signature movement style, a pattern as unique as a fingerprint.” “Putin’s inability to integrate movement ... raises obstacles to his sophisticated exercise of power,” the article said. “His judo displays show a contender trying to advance, but his movement pattern causes the ‘tail’ to lag. One could compare this to his desire to move Russia forward while remaining stuck in the Soviet past,” it said. Kirby said Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel had not read the reports. Asked about Hagel’s view of the reports, Kirby said: “The secretary was interested in the press coverage of it.” He “asked some questions about it this morning,” Kirby added. “I suspect he’ll be asking more questions about it.”

FIFA U-17 World Cup: Indian football's date with glory
NEw DELhI, MARCh 8 (tNN): The FIFA under-17 World Cup is the first of numerous great things that are inevitably bound to happen to Indian football; there is the Indian Super League (ISL) as well that will see prominent stars from all around the world bedazzle the Indian subcontinent, there was the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup, but never before has India as a 'cricket-crazy' country hosted an international football tournament at the highest level. The FIFA team that was recently in the country to inspect the stadiums made it quite evident with their reactions that India has the potential to host a "tremendous World Cup". It should indeed be
looked upon that way. Hosting this tournament would mean that the country would finally have the infrastructure, facilities, dressing rooms, stadiums, and pitches that would meet the FIFA standards. Not to forget, this is the first step in an otherwise long journey towards developing a reputation of being serious about football. With India's domestic football league, I-League, failing to improve the standards of the game due to it being overshadowed by other sports, the FIFA under-17 World Cup can act as an impeccable platform to launch a campaign to maybe host the FIFA World Cup in the foreseeable future. When FIFA president,
Sepp Blatter, visited India in 2007, he said something that will be etched forever in the hearts of every Indian football fan. Blatter designated India as a "sleeping giant" when it came to handling the affairs of international football. Keeping in mind the lucrative possibilities that the game possess, he said that land and infrastructure must be allocated for the betterment of football. India winning the bid to host the FIFA under-17 World Cup is a sign of virtuous times to roll for Indian football. All India Football Federation (AIFF) president, Praful Patel, has a clear strategy in mind. He wants football to be the number one sport in the country. He believes that
the U-17 World Cup, by virtue of India participating as hosts, will be a landmark event for the country thereby redefining the sport. It's good to see that the Indian football fraternity is represented by the right kind of people. Even Blatter recently went on the record saying that India as a "giant" has started to wake up. And it can be said with paramount certainty that the exposure that India would have at the international stage due to the status and eminence that this tournament holds will surpass any and all other footballing events. India, as a country, has indeed seen its ups and downs on various fronts and nonetheless football was the least of its United States' Ashton Eaton clears a hurdle in the 60m hurdles of the men's heptathlon during the Athletics Indoor World Championships in Sopot, Poland, Saturday, March 8. F1's latest rules leave cars quieter, slower Messi vomiting
MADRID, MARCh 8 (AP): Formula One's latest changes mean the sexy purr of engines and the violent throttle of speed won't quite be what they used to be. The usual title talk has surrounded preseason testing as usual, but the normally boisterous roar of F1's engines has been slightly subdued. Get used to it. "I've grown up with the 'old' sound, and I loved it. Some of the old cars that had the exhaust coming under the floor, the sound was just awesome — just from the TV," Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton said. "The V10 and V8 of the last few years, with their special roar, had goose-bumps potential. When you started the engine you had to cover your ears. That's history. F1 is moving on." Moving on, yes. But not at a blistering pace. In a bid to bolster innovation and perhaps shake up Red Bull's grip at the top of the standings, F1 has cast out the 2.4-liter V8 engines to make way for 1.6-liter V6 turbo engines, which means a drop of traditional horsepower. The loss is expected to be made up by the Energy Recovery Systems, which generates en-

ergy under braking by using wasted heat from the engine's turbocharger. It is expected to give drivers double the amount of kick for five times as long. "It is a step back — F1 is slower than last year," fourtime defending champion
Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull said during preseason testing. "But how much slower, we will see once we get the car in a condition where we can start to look for speed." Red Bull has yet to reach that point as it ended testing with Renault unable
to provide its teams with an engine configured to excel under the new rules. And whether the new racing will be what fans want will be seen over the course of a 19-race season, starting with the Australian Grand Prix on March 16.
"We are not in race conditions here, but if we were in race conditions I think I should bring a GP2 car," Japanese driver Kamui Kobayashi said of his Caterham car, which was also never expected to be one of the fastest cars on track. "The lap
Indoor Arena Friday and with this win at the Super Series Premier, the Chinese bettered her head-to-head against Saina to 3-4. The fourth seeded Shixian completely outplayed the Hyderabadi right from the word go. The former World No.1 took a 6-1 lead in the first game and did not look back. Saina showed some spark in the end, saving four gamepoints but that wasn't
enough as her error at the net gave Shixian the game. The Chinese was even more dominant in the second game taking a 9-2 lead in a matter of minutes to stamp her authority once again. Saina saved two matchpoints but the Chinese was too far ahead to let the Indian make a comeback. Former World Championship bronze medallist Shixian will next play compatriot and former World
Champion Yihan Wang in the semi-finals of the 104th edition of the Championships. This is World No.7 Saina's third quarter-final loss at the historic tournament while her previous best performances were reaching the semi-finals in 2010 and 2013. Only two Indians -- Prakash Padukone and Pullela Gopichand -- have won this tournament in the past.
hOustON, MARCh 8 (AP): James Harden and the Rockets were determined to make up for their most lopsided loss of the season when they got a second shot at Indiana on Friday night. Not only did Houston do that, but it handed the Eastern Conference-leading Pacers their biggest defeat in the process. Harden had 28 points and the Rockets used a huge third quarter to turn a close game into a blowout in a 112-86 win over the Pacers. Harden scored 16 in Houston's 38-point third quarter, which turned a three-point lead into a 29-point advantage. He also got into a dustup with Evan Turner that resulted in both players receiving technical fouls. Dwight Howard and Harden went to the bench for the fourth period and watched their teammates wrap up Houston's fourth consecutive win. Indiana won by 33 the first time the teams met on Dec. 20 in Indianapolis. "That's all we talked about," Howard said. "Every timeout and every possession. We wanted to get payback. It was good for us to come out (Friday) and stay on them for four quarters." David West had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Pacers, losers of three straight for the first time this season. "We're just putting the emphasis on trying to get better," Indiana center Roy Hibbert said. "Since the AllStar break we haven't been playing the best basketball. We've been playing awful." But Pacers coach Frank Vogel isn't too concerned about his team despite the skid. "Every team I've ever

Smith is the best Test captain that has ever lived, says Kirsten
NEw DELhI, MARCh 8 (PtI): Graeme Smith has received an enormous compliment from former India coach Gary Kirsten, who called the just-retired South African legend the "best captain that has ever lived" in Test cricket. The South African called time on his international cricket career after a successful run that saw him being handed over national captaincy at 22, following the 2003 World Cup. Kirsten, under whom Kirsten played the final four Test series of his career, said, "Is he the greatest captain ever in Test match cricket? In my view he must be." "I don`t think anyone had led as long. We know that. He has taken South Africa to great heights. The kind of success he has had, the kind of success he has taken South African cricket to, I would argue that he is the best captain that has ever lived," Kirsten was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.Com. The 33-year-old Smith led South Africa in all but the first eight of his 117 Tests, the most in the history of Test cricket. According to the 46-year-old Kirsten, under whom India won the 50-over World Cup in 2011 besides attaining the No.1 position in Tests, the success Smith achieved as an opener despite the added resposibility of captaincy, was massive. "For Graeme to end up with an average above 48 and then to have the type of leadership success he did have is absolutely a massive achievement," Kisten said. "You look at his record in the fourth innings and his ability to make important contributions. That gave the team a lot of confidence. It gives your team a lot of comfort to know that the captain is walking the talk."
Hamilton confident Mercedes can deliver
LONDON, MARCh 8 (REutERs): Lewis Hamilton believes his Mercedes Formula One team can live up to their advance billing as favourites when the season starts in Australia next week. "I think we're as ready as we can be for Melbourne and I'm more fired up than ever," the 2008 world champion declared on Friday in a preview for the opening race. "With all the changes within the sport and the hard work that's been going on within the team, I believe this can be our year to really show what we're capable of," added the Briton, who joined Mercedes last year after winning his title with McLaren. "That's not to take anything away from our opposition, who will be incredibly tough to beat as always, but I feel like I'm equipped with the tools I need to succeed. I can't wait to get started." British bookmaker William Hill has Hamilton as 5/2 favourite for the title with Red Bull's quadruple champion Sebastian Vettel second at 3/1 and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso listed at 11/2. Mercedes are 10/11 for the constructors' championship, ahead of Ferrari
on 7/2 and Red Bull at 4/1. Mercedes have been the most reliable team in testing ahead of a season that introduces major change in the shape of a 1.6 litre turbocharged V6 engine with energy recovery systems to replace the old 2.4 litre V8s. The German manufacturer provides engines to four teams, including the works' one that Hamilton drives for, while Renault supply four and Ferrari the remaining three. Renault, whose engines have powered Red Bull and Germany's Vettel to both titles for the past four years, have experienced problems that have seriously limited the amount of laps done in testing. Mercedes finished as overall runners-up last year with Hamilton winning in Hungary. "Overall, I think our winter testing programme went better than expected," said Hamilton's German team mate Nico Rosberg. "Having said that, the first Grand Prix is the first real opportunity to judge how well we have done against our competition. Pre-season doesn't tell the full story, especially this year with the new regulations."
time is still quicker in GP2. We need to work, but in this moment if we were to race, I think it's not Formula One." Still, Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso said the new cars are easier to maneuver, with less force and speed on the corners even though there are more parameters to control, "more buttons on the steering wheel." "I've driven karts that are half a minute slower than F1 and I still sweated and enjoyed driving. As long as you are driving at the limit, the lap time you do, it doesn't change the emotional point of view. This car is still fun to drive." Drivers were encouraged that the pace would pick up as the season progressed, even as many struggled in testing as teams grapple with the new mechanics. Hamilton, the 2008 champion who is a favorite to depose Vettel from the top, was choosing to embrace change. "Maybe we will soon all be happy about this new 'low noise.' It sure will make communications between cockpit and pit wall easier," the British driver said. "There are always good and bad things attached to the same medal."
'not normal' BARCELONA, MARCh 8 (REutERs): Recent episodes of vomiting suffered by Barcelona forward Lionel Messi are "not normal" but they do not affect his performance and there is no cause for alarm, coach Gerardo Martino said on Friday. Messi was sick during Argentina's 0-0 draw with Romania on Wednesday and the four-times World Player of the Year said it was something that had occurred several times at Barca but was nothing to be concerned about. "It happens to him regularly and he has even gone to see specialists at certain times," Martino told a news conference ahead of Barca's La Liga game at Real Valladolid on Saturday. "They haven't solved the problem but it isn't a cause for concern. It doesn't affect him at all in terms of doing his job," he added. Champions Barca, chasing a fifth title in six years, can pull two points clear of Real Madrid at the top with a win at Valladolid, who are battling relegation down in 18th. Real are at home to eighth-placed Levante on
Sunday, while Atletico Madrid, three points off the top in third, play at Celta Vigo, who are 11th, on Saturday. Martino has Gerard Pique back after the Spain defender was declared fit by club medical staff on Friday, Barca said on their website (www.fcbarcelona.es). He missed the world and European champions' 1-0 win at home to Italy on Wednesday due to a minor calf problem. Pique's international team mate Andres Iniesta withdrew from the squad on Friday "for personal reasons" and has been replaced by Netherlands midfielder Ibrahim Afellay, Barca added. They did not explain the reasons for Iniesta's decision. With an eye on Barca's packed calendar in March, including Wednesday's Champions League last 16, second leg against Manchester City, Martino said he had decided to rest left back Jordi Alba for the Valladolid trip. Alba was out for more than two months with a hamstring injury before Christmas and was briefly sidelined by a similar thigh problem last month. Barca lead City 2-0 from the first leg.

been a part of has had a stretch like we're in right now," he said. "And since I've been here we've always worked our way out of it, so I'm sure we will. It stinks right now. It's not fun right now, but we've got a good team and we'll regroup." Howard finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. Chandler Parsons and Jeremy Lin added 11 points apiece for the Rockets. The Pacers shot 6 of 18 in the third quarter with four turnovers and managed just 16 points - matching Harden's total. Paul George, who finished with 13 points, scored two quick buckets to start the second half and get the Pacers to 50-47. The Rockets scored the next nine points as part of a 16-2 run that pushed the lead to 66-49. Howard sailed high above the rim to grab a pass from Parsons, who threw it over a leaping Hibbert, and finished with a two-handed dunk. Terrence Jones starting things off with a 3-pointer
before Howard and Harden combined for the rest of the scoring in that run. After that, Hibbert made the second of two free throws after he was fouled by Howard. Hibbert crashed to the ground after minimal contact from Howard, and the play initially was ruled a flagrant foul before it was overturned on review. Houston scored seven straight points after that, thanks to a pair of turnovers by the Pacers. Parsons made two free throws before Harden grabbed a steal from West and sank a 3-pointer. A turnover by Lance Stephenson seconds later led to a dunk by Harden that made it 73-50. That's when things got heated. Turner was fouled by Parsons after he stole the ball from Patrick Beverley. Turner pushed Harden with one hand at the end of the play. Harden immediately got in his face, so close it appeared they might be touching, and the pair exchanged words. They were quickly pulled apart while
players from both teams yelled at each other. Harden said he got in Turner's face because he went too far. "I wasn't going to let it slide," he said. "I wasn't having it." The fracas didn't do anything to slow down Harden, and he scored five points in the 10-3 run by Houston that followed, extending the lead to 83-53. Harden said it was important that the Rockets maintained their composure after the scuffle. "We knew that the game was going to be officiated tight after that and we did a good job of getting stops and getting out and getting layups and 3s," he said. The Rockets led 88-59 entering the fourth. Houston was up by 16 midway through the second quarter. The Pacers got going after that, outscoring the Rockets 19-10 the rest of the first half to cut the deficit to 50-43 at halftime. West had eight points during that stretch and George had a nifty reverse layup and a 3-pointer to help Indiana.

Arsenal into FA Cup semis
LONDON, MARCH 8 (AP): Arsenal reached the FA Cup semifinals for the first time since 2009 with a 4-1 win over Everton and Manchester United kept alive its faint topfour hopes in the Premier League by beating West Bromwich Albion 3-0 on Saturday. Substitute Olivier Giroud scored two of Arsenal's three goals in the final 22 minutes as his team became the first to advance to the last four of the cup. Mesut Ozil got his first goal in three months to give Arsenal a seventhminute lead, Romelu Lukaku equalized in the 32nd before Mikel Arteta put the hosts back in front with a twice-taken penalty in the 68th. Phil Jones, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck scored for United at The Hawthorns to move the beleaguered champions up to sixth, provisionally nine points behind fourth-placed Manchester City. In one of four other Premier League games later, Chelsea can extend its lead to seven points by beating Tottenham. Arsenal has dropped off the pace in the Premier League title race by winning just one of its last four matches, and is unlikely to progress beyond the last 16 of the Champions League after a 2-0 home defeat to Bayern Munich in their first leg. That means the FA Cup has become a priority for the Gunners, who are without a trophy since 2005, and it took

the 61st-minute introduction of Giroud to turn what had been a tight contest against Everton. The France striker, on for inexperienced and ineffective compatriot Yaya Sanogo, gave Arsenal more presence up front to
allow the team's attacking midfielders to shine. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was tripped by Gareth Barry for a penalty, which Arteta needed to convert twice — the first was ruled out for encroachment by Giroud —
to give Arsenal the lead for the second time in the match. Giroud sidefooted home Bacary Sagna's cross from close range in the 83rd and, after another flowing move, Ozil supplied a center for Giroud to apply another simple

Sri Lanka beat Pakistan to win Asia Cup
NEW DELHI, MARCH 8 (TNN): Left-handed opener Lahiru Thirimanne hit a magnificent century as Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by five wickets to win their first Asia Cup title after 2008. Sri Lanka chased down the 261-run victory target with 22 balls to spare in the final at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday. Thirimanne hit his third ODI century before he was clean bowled by Saeed Ajmal with Sri Lanka needing less than 15 runs for victory. Thirimanne's 101-run knock came off 108 balls and was studded with 13 fours. Sri Lanka lost their fourth wicket when Junaid Khan had Ashan Priyanjan (13) caught behind by Umar Akmal. Mohammad Talha had Mahela Jayawardene caught by Sharjeel Khan in the covers with Sri Lanka needing less than 50 runs for victory. Jayawardene hit a six and nine fours in his 93-
ball 75 and added 156 runs with Lahiru Thirimanne for the third wicket. Thirimanne and Mahela Jayawardene brought up their 150run stand off 154 balls. Jayawardene reached his first half-century in 13 innings off 76 deliveries while Thirimanne reached his seventh ODI fifty off 52 balls. Such was the strokemaking of Thirimanne and Jayawardene that they reached their partnership milestones with effortless ease. Their 100run stand came off 103 balls and their 50-run stand came off 58 balls. The partnership came after Saeed Ajmal dismissed Kusal Perera and Kumar Sangakkara off his first two deliveries to rattle Sri Lanka. Pe re ra s t ra n g e l y charged out of the crease on the very first delivery by Ajmal but missed it completely for Umar Akmal to complete the stumping.
