Rs.1 lakh for the kin of each of the 16 workers who died in the landslide. The Governor also called upon the people to be alert and take necessary precautions as the state is experiencing heavy rainfall. He also advised the state government and district administrations to warn the people living in landslide and flood prone areas. “Later, one of the seriously injured persons died while on the way to the hospital,” he said, adding that the condition of the other injured remains critical. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the deaths. Taking cognizance of the issue, union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday called up Arunachal Pradesh Chief
Minister Kalikho Pul to discuss the floods and the landslide situation. “Singh has assured full central assistance to Arunachal Pradesh to tackle the floods situation arising due to a swollen Noa Dehing river. He has asked Director General of National Disaster Response Force O.P. Singh to rush rescue teams to the landslide-hit Famla village in Tawang, bordering China,” said an official. A high-level committee chaired by the home minister has also approved assistance of Rs.84.33 crore for Arunachal Pradesh to tackle floods. District administration officials said: “The camp where the construction labourers were staying had been buried due to the landslide.” The Arunachal Pradesh
Governor had reviewed the disaster preparedness of the hill state only last week with Chief Minister Kalikho Pul and called for preparedness amongst the people to face any eventuality in case of disaster. The Governor had also advised the state government officials to mobilize volunteers and train the youth on disaster response procedure, starting from village level groups. He said that mock drills must be conducted involving students, volunteers, general public and elders in public places so that they know how to respond during earthquakes or any natural calamities. He had also advised the government to set up and activate control rooms immediately.
Maytas & Gayatri (JV) must first complete SARDP Phase-1 road project: NGRC-1CU DiMapUr, april 22 (MExn): Nagaland Government Registered Class-1 Contractors Union (NGRC1CU), in a representation to the Governor of Nagaland on Friday demanded that the firm Maytas & Gayatri (JV) should be allowed to execute the construction of four laning of Dimapur-Kohima highway amounting to Rs 340 crore only after completion of the 4 road projects under SARDP Phase-1 in Nagaland. The two-laning road projects, which were awarded to the firm in 2010, include: the Longleng–Changtongya road; Mon–Tamlu–Merangkong road, Phek–Pfütsero road, and Zunheboto–Chakhabama road. Referring to the latest Comptroller and Auditor General of India report (CAG) on the SARDP project, the Union, through its president Seyiekuolie and general secretary L. Pukhato Shohe, stated that “Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) had approved two–lan-
ing of the four roads on April 2010 in one package for Rs 1, 296 crore including percentage charges.” However, the CAG report, according to the Union had pointed out that “not a single kilometer in any of the four roads was completed despite an expenditure of Rs 602.34 crore incurred on execution of work.” It also observed that no further progress of work was achieved on any of the four roads since August 2012 and the single–lane roads, which previously existed, had degraded and rendered almost unusable thereby causing hardship to the communities. The Union has also alleged that the contract work under SARDP-NE awarded to Maytas & Gayatri (JV) at Rs 1130. 67 crore was 21.47% above the Nagaland PWD Schedule of Rate (SOR)-2010. “This means an additional 245.81 crore has been freely gifted as bonus” to the firm, it claimed. The Union also alleged, citing ‘reliable source,’ and also from the
representative of Ratna Infrastructure Projects Pvt Ltd that the Maytas & Gayatri (JV) firm after deducting a high commission has further sublet the entire project to one Ratna Infrastructure Project Pvt. Ltd at the Nagaland SOR-2010 rate. It also alleged that Ratna Infrastructure project Pvt. Ltd. has been negotiating to sublet the works at less than 50% below SOR 2010 by further subletting the work for its actual implementation to the local entrepreneurs. In this connection, the Union said it had requested to meet the chairmen of Gayatri & Maytas and Ratna Infrastructure project Pvt. Ltd but only a middleman of the latter met the Union in the office of the Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, PWD Housing. The Union also said it had submitted a representation to the Prime Minister of India and Minister of PWD (Road & bridges), Nagaland in this regard.

Rural livelihood at Phenwenyu, a small village under Tseminyu sub division of Kohima district is seeing a transformation hen–after-hen through backyard poultry farming. A number of farmers from the village have benefitted from the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kohima supported poultry project and their testimonies are promising, as was highlighted by KVK Tesophenyu, Kohima district during an exhibition held at Tseminyu town recently. Phenwenyu comprises of 80 household and its population is largely dependent on agriculturewith paddy, maize, collocasia, chilly, beans, tomato, squash as their main crops. The villagers also grow horticulture crops like plum, pears, peach, wild fig, mango, banana, passion fruit etc. Since the farming system is rain fed, most of the agricultural activities are cultivated and harvested during the kharif season. The villagers remain busy in their fields from April until October and stay idle from November to March. During this lean period, the main livelihood activity of the villagers is stone quarrying. To promote poultry farming in the village, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kohima conducted a frontline demonstration on backyard farming of broiler birds. Participa-
tory Rural Appraisal was conducted and ten women- five each from two Self Help Groups (SHGs) were identified for the demonstration. Before commencement, all the beneficiaries were given training on small-scale rearing of broiler birds in their backyards and 30 number of Vencobb 40 day-old chicks, veterinary medicines, weighing balance and feeds were provided to all the beneficiaries. During the demonstration, vaccination was administered and body weight measured once in two weeks until the birds attained the marketweight. The poultry houses were cleaned regularly, feeds and water were provided to the birds at regular interval. After 45 days, the average body weight and feed conversion ratio of the birds were 2.2 kg and 1.8 respectively. The birds were sold at Rs 140 per kg in Tseminyu town with a net profit of Rs 2, 500 per beneficiary. Encouraged with the success, the stock strength per farmer was increased to 50 chicken and by the end of one year; six batches have already sold their hens with an average net profit of Rs 40,000 per batch. Thus, in an overall, 10 farmers contributed approximately around Rs 2, 40,000 to the village economy in a year. With this success, the farmers are planning to increase the present stock strength to 100 per batch and encourage more families into the broiler-poultry farming business since it is more remunerative and also provides employment opportunity.

Mélange: Entrepreneurs find new arena to chase dreams Morung Express News Zunheboto | April 22
With an aim to reach out to the youth of Zunheboto and to introduce in person the various programmes and projects for the youths, the Youth Net team are in Zunheboto taking part in the Mélange 2016 youth fest. With different stalls opened at the venue and the night carnival, the youths of Zunheboto have been given a chance to test their entrepreneur skills. “There are many motivated
and driven youths here in Zunheboto and Mélange 2016 has given the platform to Youth Net and the youths of Zunheboto,” said the Youth Net team. On the first day itself more than fifty students and drop outs and even parents dropped in at the youth net stall and the team feels that there are a lot of scope and potential in the youths of Zunheboto. Mariam H. Zimo has just finished her beauty, hair and make-up training from Bangaluru and has a beauty salon
stall opened at the Mélange 2016 carnival. Mariam is happy that the Zunheboto Town Youth Organization (ZTYO) has organized such an event because she feels it is a great opportunity to expose her profession since many in the Town does not know her. She hopes to open a beauty salon next year in the town as there are only a couple of beauty salons in town. But what Mariam feels challenging is the transportation problem of her beauty products all the way from from Bengaluru.
A similar problem is faced everyday by Livi Kiba who runs the King Chilly restaurant in town. A graduate from Bishops Cotton College, Gauwahati, Livi has worked with many multi-national companies but she chose to come home and run the restaurant since her passion drives her. “It is very difficult to get fresh vegetables and fruits in the market, except during seasons. We have to get it all the way from Dimapur and use it up before it gets rotten,” she says.
There are many upcoming youths who are trying their hand on entrepreneurship and it is encouraging to see them come up but Zunheboto has very less to offer. The lack of development and the negligence may be a factor that puts out the fire in them, she further added. Another housewife Aholi K. Achumi has grabbed the opportunity and opened a stall at the carnival to advertise her ‘Kapsun’ products. With the Kapsun flyers hanging all over the stall, she is ever ready to
give a demonstration on all her products starting from medicines to beauty products. “This fest is not only an opportunity for the youth but also for the older people because we get to enjoy along with the youngsters and also encourage them,” she adds when asked how she feels about the event. Alotoli who is a government servant and has been staying in Zunheboto town for three years now says that the town needs to develop in every aspect. There are no vocational
training centers or institutions, the whole town has just one Government College and there is so much more the government needs to look into especially for the youths she says. The many talents and skills of the youths will not go in waste, hopes the Youth Net team on one hand and on the other the people are hoping that the 'Awake Zunheboto' campaign will really awaken the people as well as the Government in bringing about change in the development deprived town.

Stop border fencing works: ICHAM N. Damayanti first from NE to Newmai News Network Imphal | April 22
Information Centre for Hill Areas Manipur (ICHAM) on Friday demanded the Manipur government to immediately steer clear of the Indo-Myanmar border fencing works. The demand comes following the formation of a new committee to deal with the issue. The new committee, set up here, is represented by headmen and other leaders from 40 different villages of Chandel and Ukhrul districts. Three districts— Churachandpur, Chandel and Ukhrul share over 390 km-long porous border with neighbouring Myanmar. Information Centre for Hill Areas Manipur (ICHAM) said the committee had been established after finding that border fencing on the Manipur sector of the IndiaMyanmar border was being carried out in a complicated manner by the government. “The committee should be allowed to involve in all activities related to the fence work from now onwards,” ICHAM president M Rajendro told reporters after announce-
ment on formation of the committee. He warned the government that the committee would firmly deal with it if any further border fencing works is taken up without consulting it. Rajendro also expressed concern about the recent claim by the government that the ongoing fencing construction was only a security barrier and not real border fence. He alleged that the government was not keen on resolving the border issue. ICHAM also expressed its displeasure at the Manipur government for allegedly allowing a team from Survey of India to sneak into Kwatha Khunou area to inspect border fencing work recently. The government had claimed that it was not aware of the team coming to the area. ICHAM had demanded that the state government clarify its stand on the inspection visit giving April 22 as deadline. The state government though made clarifications. It has been estimated that a large chunk of Manipur (about 1,000 sq km) land would be lost to Myanmar due to the proposed fence.

'Won't remain mute if insurgents disrupt rural council polls' aIzawl, aprIl 22 (pTI): Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla today said the state government will not remain a mute spectator if insurgents try to disrupt the upcoming elections to the councils in 31 villages within the Sinlung Hills Development Council (SHDC) area on May 19. Addressing party workers at the political session in the Congress Bhavan here, Lal Thanhawla said if the Hmar insurgents wanted to hold talks, they should first show that they were "sincere". "The insurgents should shun extortion and other violent activities in order to create conducive atmosphere for talks," he said adding they should come out and contest the elections. The Chief Minister's statement came after the central committee of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) on Wednesday met him and appealed to initiate peaceful negotiations with the Hmar People's Convention (Democratic) militants. The HPC(D) has been demanding a separate autonomous district council comprising the SHDC area adjoining Manipur under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

He said that in the past it was an efficient method of cultivation but with the increase in density of population, the number of trees regenerated is not sufficient. Meanwhile, Additional PCCF (Development and Planning), I Panger Jamir said human actions were destroying the planet and each person must take responsibility for his or her action. ave you ever wondered about the journey of momo? Come to think of it, the momo has probably travelled the farthest of all foods. That, it is now quite at home on the streets of Delhi, as it is comfortable at posh five-star eateries, only confirms how these stuffed dumplings (either with meat of one’s choice or assorted greens including paneer) have evolved over the years. And how India, which is not even its place of origin, has adopted it like its very own is also an interesting twist. Today, there are food entrepreneurs who prepare momos in bulk and supply them to vendors and kiosks whose only job is to steam and sell them piping hot with hot sauce to hungry customers who never seem to get enough of them. There was a time, not too long ago, when people associated momos with food from the Northeast. Far from it, it’s not really a part of their traditional cuisine. For instance, in Manipur's capital Imphal, restaurants
may now be awaking up to the popularity of this food and including them in their menu with passion, but they can never get it right simply because it is not a traditional dish like fish and rice is, as in the case in Tripura or other states in the region, with of course a few exceptions. Shillong is one place where it’s easy to get some of the most delicious dumplings as compared to the other states. Expect meaty fillings in creamy, light shells with spicy chutney to go with it. No, it is not at all part of the local Khasi cuisine. Rather credit must be given to the Chinese community who have made Shillong their home and introduced Chinese food, including momos (traditionally Tibetan). Perhaps it is only among Arunachal Pradesh's Monpa and Sherdukpa tribes, who live in the West Kameng and Tawang districts and share a border with Tibet, where momos are a part of their diets. Their version is usually stuffed with minced pork and mustard leaves or other green vegetables, and served with chilli paste.
How momos are received in Sikkim is quite another story. Across the communities: Bhutias, Lepchas and Nepalis, it is a comfort food which is very much a part of their diet. Their aluminium momo steamer is always in use. The dumpling you get in Sikkim is a close cousin of the Tibetan momo. The great exodus from their homeland in the 1960s scattered Tibetans and their cuisine across India — several settled in Sikkim, Meghalaya, the hill towns of Darjeeling and Kalimpong in Bengal, and Delhi. In Sikkim, the momo has pushed the state's traditional dish, hyontoen, off the plate. Hyontoen is made of millet flour, rolled like momos, stuffed with
cheese and steamed. Today, few Sikkimese people remember it but they take pride in their ability to prepare batches of delicious momos. At home and in some restaurants, it is served with radish or cucumber salad. Beef and pork are traditional fillings; but chicken and vegetable momos and cottage cheese of late, are gaining ground. Momo or Dim Sum? But the provenance of the Indian dumpling is a complicated one. Where and how did it feature into our menu is interesting. Even though momo traces its roots to Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan, it is similar to what the Chinese call baozi and jiaoz. Both are dumplings that
are stuffed with pork, beef, shrimp, vegetables or even tofu. Though these are integral to the Chinese, it is commonly found in most parts of Asia. For the Chinese, special occasions like their Lunar New Year means getting their kitchen stuffed with ingredients for jiaozi, which is lovingly prepared in every home. In Tibet, where it is considered an unofficial national dish, momos come with various fillings. They are also steamed and fried and savoured with accompaniments like hot sauce that’s made with tomatoes, garlic, ginger, dried chillies, oil and tossed and blended together. So what the Tibetans called momos is nothing but dim sum for the Chinese.
What Makes This Tibetan Dumpling So Popular? onions and black pepper. Sometimes, they also add in Bhutanese pepper, which tickles the tongue. The bones of any meat they use are dunked in a pot and kept to boil for a clear soup.
Momos have also made passionate inroads in Bhutan believed to be popularised by the Tibetan communities. So, it’s interesting how my Bhutanese friends interpret their version. They use all kinds of meat, mostly yak meat or beef, for the stuffing. As for the vegetarian option, they stick to cabbage, mushroom, paneer, potatoes and spinach with loads of onions, cheese, butter or oil and of course, salt to taste. For the sauce, it has to be that deadly dalley chilles, locally called dalley khorsani. ‘Dalley’ in Nepali means round, and ‘khorsani’ is chilli. They would grind this chilli with sliced onion and tomatoes, mash it to make a course paste, and finally garnish with minced
What Makes a Delicious Momo? So, what makes a delicious momo really depends on how it is prepared and what ingredients are used. If the dough, for instance, is fresh and of fine quality, be sure that you will get a good momo. Some people even use warm water when kneading the dough. The stuffing, be it meat or vegetables, should be minced well and flavoured with ginger or garlic. One of the most delicious momos I have ever had was at the nowclosed-for-renovation The Oberoi Delhi’s iconic Taipan. The juicy stuffing of shrimps, fish, chicken and vegetables come wrapped in a flimsy exterior of finest imported flour, in a bamboo basket. A mere bite and the juice just oozes out and what accentuates the flavour are
the many accompanying sauces. And many chefs often say the real trick of a momo or a dim sum is the dough – it must be so fine that when steamed, it gets only finer and not thicker. From glass noodle turnip dumpling to spinach, water chestnut and black bean dumpling, the variations were like art. Another time, it was at a Ladakhi friend, Angmo’s home in Delhi. Straight out from a boarding school, she led a group of hungry hostellers into her kitchen. Painstakingly, she kneaded the dough and prepared mutton momos in her aluminium vessel. She deboned the meat and dunked them into a pressure cooker. After a couple of whistles, added sliced coriander and garlic. The aroma wafting all over her house was enough to rev our appetite. Those juicy momos with a home-made sauce of tomato, green chillies and garlic, along with a bowl of soup was soulful. To this day, I long for that. Momos, no matter where they come from, they will always be my soul food. Hoihnu Hauzel is a journalist and a food & travel writer.

ublin-born John Carney has worn many hats. He was the bassist for the Irish band The Frames in the early ’90s. He subsequently worked in indie film and television. (His show Bachelors Walk has been described as the most successful in Irish history.) But it wasn’t until 2007 that he truly pushed the Hibernian envelope—indeed, split it to shreds— with the tiny, scintillating gem Once. A musical romance made for less than $200,000, the film astonished critics (me, perhaps even more than most), won an Oscar for Best Song, and ultimately spawned a hit Broadway musical. And so, in 2013, Carney attempted to replicate the formula with Begin Again, another film about a talented musical ingénue and an older male mentor who together attempt, quasi-romantically, to put together an album. (The movie might just as well have been titled Twice.) This time, though, Carney opted for a bigger budget and bigger stars (Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo), and forsook his native town for the glamour of New York—perhaps
the city on Earth least in need of a musical encomium. Begin Again wasn’t a bad movie, but the subtle magic of Once was lost in trans-Atlantic translation. I could scarcely be more delighted to report that Carney has rediscovered that magic with Sing Street, another tiny, winsome charmer set in Dublin. The year is 1985, with all that entails musically, good and (often) bad. When we first meet the protagonist, 15-yearold Conor (Ferdia WalshPeelo), he’s experimenting with song lyrics in his bedroom: “I’ll be the mechanic of your heart, and with a wrench I’ll take you apart.” Hearing his parents (the sorely underutilized Aidan Gillen and Maria Doyle Kennedy) fight downstairs, he instead endeavors to put their violent hollering to music: “If we didn’t share a mortgage, I’d leave you.” The family is in dire financial straits, so his parents pull Conor from the school he was attending to send him to one run by the Christian Brothers: essentially a teen penitentiary overseen by strict, possibly predatory, priests and sadistic bullies. But one day Conor meets Raphina (Lucy Boynton), a 16-yearold truant who lives across the street from the school. When she world-wearily
informs him that she is a model with plans to move to London—the year difference in their ages might as well be a decade—he impulsively asks her if she’d like to star in a music video for his band. The problem, of course, is that there is no band, and Conor himself can scarcely hold a tune or strum a guitar. But these details are overcome with enchanted efficiency. Conor’s sole friend, Darren (Ben Carolan, resembling a pint-sized Danny Partridge), imagines himself a manager and introduces Conor to quiet, sensitive Eamon (Mark McKenna), who keeps rabbits and happens to play every instrument known to humankind. The band quickly fills out like a pubescent version of The Commitments, takes the name “Sing Street” as an ironic reference to their school, Synge Street CBS—the very school Carney himself attended— and in no time they have produced their first song and amateur video, the shamelessly Duran Duranian “Riddle of the Model.” Conor, for his part, takes little time to find his voice: in the band, at school, and, most importantly, with Raphina. And so the story unfolds, as the band cycles through its The Cure
phase and its Spandau Ballet phase, hair gel waxing or waning as appropriate. The soundtrack also includes entrants from The Jam, Joe Jackson, and, if you listen closely, a gentle, piano-only version of A-Ha’s “Take On Me.” But it’s the original songs, written by Carney himself, that are the true draw here: the teen anthem “Drive It Like You Stole It,” the plaintive “To Find You,” and the intolerably infectious “Up”—which might have served as an apt title for the movie had it not already been well spoken for. There is nothing particularly novel about the tale Carney tells, but he tells it with an uncanny combination of tenderness and joy. Throughout it all, Conor receives advice and encouragement, both romantic and musical, from his college-dropout older brother, Brendan (a fantastic Jack Reynor, channeling Seth Rogen). Whenever Conor is down, Brendan bucks him up with the ineffable wisdom of the stoner-sage: “Did the Sex Pistols know how to play? You don’t need to know how to play! You need to know how not to play!” There is nothing particularly novel about the tale Carney tells, but he
tells it with an uncanny combination of tenderness and joy. Endearing moments abound: three siblings dancing together to Hall & Oates’s “Maneater”; a magnificently awkward kiss over halfchewed biscuits; the magical realism of a dream prom performance; a redemption that is no less satisfying for being utterly predictable; the bygone intimacy of the cassette tape. Tucked in among these are even a few discreet references to Once: a cameo by a Hoover, another girl listening to a sad song on headphones at night. Befitting its young subjects, Sing Street is more lightweight than Once. Pools of melancholy lurk—family breakdown, poverty, alcoholism, abuse—but the film never wades too deeply into them. The result is a giddy pop fantasy that nonetheless carries beguiling undertones of wistfulness and regret. As Raphina explains to Conor, “Your problem is you’re not happy being sad. But that’s what love is: happy-sad.” It may not be true of all love, but it’s an apt description of the particular form of love that John Carney has once again brought to life onscreen, in all its rapturous, lightheaded splendor.

he fashion world should follow the mantra of reduce, reuse and recycle to save Mother Earth, says Elin Åström, sustainability manager at Swedish fashion retail giant H&M. Towards this, the brand is on a mission to reduce the environmental impact from the fashion industry by limiting the amount of textiles that end up in landfills and hence has come up with its first sustainability line for Indian market. The brand has shipped its Conscious Exclusive 2016 Collection to stores globally and to India. This is the first time the line's been brought to the country. Created in collaboration with the iconic Museé des Arts Décoratifs, Palais Du Louvre, the Conscious Exclusive 2016 Collection is inspired by the archives of the museum and is fabricated entirely from sustainable material. “We have a strong ambition to lead the fashion industry to become more sustainable and respect the planet we live on. One example is our use of raw material. Cotton is the material that we use the most. Although cotton has many good qualities as a material, the intense water and chemical use in cotton processing is a concern with negative social and environmental impact. “However by choosing more sustainable alternatives such as organic cotton, we have 46% less climate impact as compared to conventional cotton. We have set a global goal at H&M, to ensure that all cotton comes from sustainable resources by 2020,” Åström told IANS in an interview. She also said the brand plans to save the Earth in as many ways as possible. “We want to reduce the environmental impact from the fashion industry by limiting the amount of textiles that end up in landfills. Today, a lot of garments unfortunately are thrown away even though about 95 percent could be recycled. To continue to expand in a sustainable way, we need to address this - reduce, reuse and recycle. “Reduce waste, reuse textile in new products and recycle fibres to get new more sustainable raw material. Through this we
close the loop for textiles and reduce negative impact. For example, one recycled t-shirt can save 2,100 liters of water. To scale this up requires innovation but is for sure the way into the future of fashion,” she said. The brand has also launched World Recycle Week campaign globally as a step to close the loop in fashion. It started on April 18 and will run till April 24. “World Recycle Week campaign is an aim to collect 1000 ton of unwanted garments from customers worldwide helping to close the loop in fashion. We want to reduce the environmental impact from the fashion industry by limiting the amount of textiles that end up in landfills as well as offer an easy solution for customers to recycle fabric. “During this week we work towards creating awareness towards recycling and encouraging

customers to bring in their old garments to the store throughout the year, in return for which they get discount vouchers for their next outing,” she said. The brand, which forayed into India last year, has been receiving wonderful business in the country. This is evident from the fact that there are five stores in India, inclduing one that is opening at Noida's DLF Mall of India, in a short span of six months. Åström believes that India has always been the source of inspiration for the brand. “H&M has been sourcing from India for over 30 years now, we are delighted to have stores in the same market from where we have been sourcing for so long. This is the right time for India, there is so much potential in retail today,” she said, adding that the brand could come up with a collection inspired by India.

osie (Rosemary Kikon) and I met in a small German town. You’ve probably never heard of Bochum, but there is so much in this story about geography that you might take a map and start looking up places right now. We were studying humanitarian action together. We were also dancing, drinking and arguing how to save the world. And we really meant it, to save the world. After getting our masters’, she went back to Sri Lanka to do tsunami rehabilitation work, sometimes I heard from her, when she came to Germany for common friend’s wedding, sometimes she was in Copenhagen, sometimes in California and now suddenly in Japan. A few years ago I learned that Rosie had become a playwright, a poet and an actor, enacting her autobiographical plays. Other than that she remained fierce and fearless, honest and generous and an amazing storyteller. This is the story of my friend Rosie, a woman from the far corner of the world. - You get to meet so many people of different cultures and backgrounds… So, when you meet them, what do you say about yourself? With what words do you define yourself? -I tell them, I ethnically origin from the Eastern Himalayas, and they look at me usually a bit confused (like they want more detailed info), and so I add that I belong to an indigenous ethnic community called the Nagas, we are around 2 million…. scattered along the India-Burma border…. - Himalayas! I was planning to ask you about Himalayas. For ordinary folk, like me, it’s almost like you were saying casually “oh, you know, I origin from Middle-earth” and actually meaning it. What was it like, growing up in the Eastern Himalayas? What did your childhood smell like? What did you see from your window, on your way to school? What was great? What was terrible? What is your best childhood memory? And, since this is the first thing you tell people about yourself, how does this define who you’ve become? - I was born in the mountains, in a small town called Kohima in Nagaland, but my parents moved down to the foothill town called Dimapur because this town was better connected to the rest of India and the world with an airport and a railway station. Looking back at my childhood days, I always thought I was born at the end of the world because Burma (military junta) and China (communist) our neighbors didn’t have good relations with India and our borders were closed. It was as if there was a thick wall along the borders…. so I was forced to look westwards towards mainland India and beyond…. I have memories of a lot of heavy rains accompanied by strong wind. It was hot and humid during summer, so we enjoyed playing in the rain, we were surrounded by thick green grasses, trees and a lot of flowers. At night, often when there was electricity blackout and everything was pitch dark, with only a kerosene lamp burning in some corner of our house, I still remember the storms with loud angry thunder and lightning– that magically lighted up the whole sky, it really scared me but also struck me with awe. And during the daytime, when the hot summer earth and the tarred roads were kissed by the rain– there was a smell very unique, to both these kisses in the humid air, that unique smell is so vivid in my memory. I used to be scared when it rained heavily on our corrugated tin-roof, it made a lot of noise but being close to my parents made me feel safe. Our kitchen often had dried bamboo shoot pork curry smell because that was a delicacy of our Lotha tribe, I still cook this sometimes and my German husband loves it, bringing back memories from far away… There was a window in our house, and it had a view directly towards our gate which was some few hundred meters away– in the evening me and my younger sister Julie sat there and waited for my mother, who always brought us some sweets when she came home after

work. As soon as we saw mom, we jumped out of the window like two little monkeys and attacked her bag. This was the climax of the day. I was the eldest daughter, I had one sister who was two years younger than me and another sister who was six years younger. I remember carrying their school bags, so I carried a total of three school bags packed with books and pulled one sister with my right hand, the other sister with my left hand– of course we took a rickshaw to school, but just pulling my two sisters in and out of their classrooms felt like eternity. In school, I was one of the most talkative girls, I don’t know why I couldn’t shut my mouth– I always had never ending things to say. Because of this, I was often punished and to use me for a meaningful purpose, a teacher often made me tell stories to the class. I use to make up stories and tell them, I remember sometimes I laughed so much at my own stories that no coherent words would come out of my mouth– and my classmates and teachers laughed just looking at me. It was hilarious. I had a very pretty and independent minded mother and my friends envied me– this was so nice. Both my parents were free spirited so they gave us a lot of freedom, which was unusual for that part of the world, where many people have taken over the conservative side of Christianity. I was very fortunate compared to many of my friends there. What I didn’t like as a child was that my father always got into trouble with his political ideas with the local political elites and we as a family had to suffer a lot because of him. I saw my youthful parents destroyed year after year because they didn’t give in to the conventions of our society. This as a child was very painful to observe, but I guess, this was a tough training for me to survive wherever I went around the world… And by the way, I just turned out like them– political and loud-mouthed like my father and free-spirited and independent like my mother, not so pretty like her, but good enough to find a husband who is with me for 16 years. - This is how I remember you: talkative, opinionated, always ready to share a good joke and loved by absolutely everyone :). What did you dream of, when you were a child? And how old were you, when you left your corner of the world? - As a child I always wanted to travel, the big wide world out there just fascinated me… I was drawn to people, culture and places that were very different from what I was exposed to as a child. I remember my parents had a lot of friends from mainland India and because my mother worked for the government information department, any state guest i.e. foreigners that landed in Dimapur (the gate way to Nagaland), she was responsible for giving them orientation and for interviewing them. So though we lived at the end of the world– and due to the insurgency movement foreigners were banned to come to Nagaland but the few that poured in, somehow we had access to them. Most of my mother’s friends were housewives, she was an exception because she was a full-time career woman, during school vacation and weekends she took us with her to her office and I sat in the corner and listened to their talks. Somehow, I was totally fascinated by adult talks. I was 15 years old when I
left home to study my pre-university in Bangalore in South India and then proceeded to Delhi for my university education. After I left home, I stayed mostly away from home only visiting my family during school breaks. - You won’t be surprised at my next question. How did you become a humanitarian worker? - In my part of the world, helping each other was just a normal part of our lives, generally people were (and are still) poor, there is no health insurance, unemployment benefits etc., so sick people, single illiterate mothers, old people or people with no proper skill were socially very vulnerable– and these people were often our relatives, a part of our clan or tribe or often our neighbors. I remember very early that all our old clothes were handed down to our underprivileged relatives and also children of people who helped us with our domestic chores. Our leftover foods were distributed in the neighborhood and many relatives who would come down from the mountains for treatment because of illness were given shelter by my parents. My mother was very good in writing applications and she also had contacts at the higher governmental and political level, so when divorced women with kids had nowhere to go they would come to my mother and she wrote applications for some financial support from the spouse’s employers on humanitarian ground. There was no existing legal framework in place so my mother talked to the spouses’ employers to find a way to help the illiterate wives and their kids. I think my mother was hated by many male chauvinists for her common-sense feminist approach. When poor people in our neighborhood fell ill, their wives and children told my mother they had nothing to eat because their husbands and fathers couldn’t earn their daily wage. My mother gave them some food initially but later she informed herself about the frequently occurring illnesses like malaria, diarrhea etc. and she kept basic medicine at home to give them. She explained how to avoid diseases and spread awareness. As she had a good rapport with local doctors at the civil hospital, she phoned them and sent the serious cases to the hospital. Most of these people thought my mother was a doctor, she was called doctor madam. My father was more focused on structural change, he had something like Bernie Sanders’ philosophy. He often said– I will not buy votes, because he didn’t want to be corrupted when he is elected. He contested four general elections and was not elected even once but that was his principle, later he died a frustrated man. And when I argued with him why he still wants to make political change when his voters are interested only in money– he told me if the whole system is corrupt and poor people become poorer, they will not let us live in peace, the elites have their gated houses with guards they are protected, it’s the rest of us that will have to pay the price. He loved saying, we have no choice. So maybe, humanitarian work and activism was just programmed in my DNA through my early socialization. - I remember this Facebook-post from 2014: “After my soul’s operating system crashed in 2009 after long years working in Aid & Development- I rebooted by life
and re-cycled myself into a ‘spoken word artist’. And currently, I am in Berlin looking out for venues to perform my solo-autobiographical piece in January 2015.” I don’t have half of your experience with the aid work, but I know how much it can hurt you and burn you. Tell me about the re-booting and recycling and rising from ashes and how does one become an artist? - It was when I was in Sri Lanka doing my post-tsunami rehabilitation work, the Sri Lankan government defeated the Tamil Tigers in 2009, leaving behind thousands of civilian deaths and destroying people’s houses, livelihoods, etc.– these were the same people who had experienced the tsunami disaster 5 years back. This really devastated me. And along with my work in Sri Lanka, I was writing my master’s thesis on the Gaza conflict and there was an ongoing Gaza war (2008-09). With a full time job in a war context and writing a thesis on an ongoing war– I understood the hypocrisies of world politics and the limitation of aid work. I was very tired and I was also turning 40 in 2009, so I started asking myself whether I would like to continue my career in the same area or not — and the answer was NO. No, because I had no energy to carry on work that demanded so much of me when the problems kept multiplying. Therefore I decided to do something that will help me to take an inner journey within myself, and as theater always fascinated me, that’s why I started studying theater, even if my classmates were 15-20 years younger, I thought so what– I can always try! This is how my journey started from ABCD… I realized very soon in the theater school that my body was illiterate because I’ve only used it for functional purpose and I had abused it, by always taking it to its limit and not caring for it. Thankfully, physical theater helped me to approach my body and mind more gently. Step by step, and now after 7 years, I feel very at home to stand on stage and say and do what I want to. What I enjoy most is to write my own poems or stories and to perform them– it gives me the freedom to re-frame my story and reconstruct my life poetically the way I want, as I origin from an indigenous community, usually it’s the outside people who write and define us. Now at last I feel free, free to write what I want, free to say what I want, free to present how I want and this is super empowering. Of course, all that I did in the past helps me because I write mostly out of my experiences, I think I did the right thing– because now I feel I’m following my heart and my soul feels at home in “my brown indigenous Rosie-body”. - Wow Rosie! What an enormous courage it should take to walk away from your calling, from something you’re extremely good at, because I know that humanitarian work is way more than a job and I know how good you are at it. How much courage it should take to not let it define you any longer, to become a novice, to let yourself be awkward and clumsy and a learner. Even more courage, probably, to tell yourself that you want to be someone else entirely. How did you feel when you were on the stage for the first time and there were people, real people in the audience, waiting to see and hear you bare your soul? - There was a character I developed in my second year at the theater school called Silky
Diamond in a cabaret show with my classmates. Silky was a woman deep in her midlife crisis, her good days are already long gone, a kind of a loser, her boyfriend Johnny left her for a younger woman long ago, her body is saggy, her make-up always smudged, she wears secondhand clothes styled from the 1960s and she volunteers at a multi-ethnic neighborhood variety show, somewhere in the suburbs of London. I really enjoyed playing this character so much because something inside me connected so well to this woman. I felt like a real loser initially in the theater school, somehow my young classmates didn’t know what I did before, they just saw a woman in 40s struggling in a physical theater school. Playing Silky Diamond put some of my deepest inner fears at rest, because I felt I enjoyed playing this character so much– and being a loser on stage was just simply so cool. My classmates laughed a lot during the rehearsals because they saw me in this Silky character and after the show I remember people coming and asking me more about Silky. From this experience, I learned that I can take all my fears and blend them in my writings and perform them, and this really gave me a sense of deep-freedom, in the sense that I’m not alone fearing something– when I share it with my audience, because they come up to me and share their own fears too. - I spent some time looking at your photos on Facebook, some that I remember and some that I missed as we drifted in and out of touch (and in again!). And I marveled at how many different faces you have. Or is it all the same face? - Hahaha, I can tell you that my heart is the planet earth, it doesn’t change but my face reflects my different emotional seasons– and depending on what season I’m experiencing emotionally, my face changes in-tune with that particular state. I don’t try to hide my emotional seasons anymore, it’s all a part of me (in me)– I just love and live them as they are, even if I’m in deep dark cold winter state, I know that spring is not very far away…. because I can smell it even if I cannot see it. - Indeed, spring is not far away! Tonight the rain fell and washed away the snow in my northern city and, as I walked through the thick mist this morning, I caught a delectable scent of spring in the air. Tell me, what is it like in Tokyo? How and where are you meeting your spring? - I’m welcoming spring by sharing my writings with people in Tokyo, like the flowers that bloom and bring beauty– I love to bring my writings alive by sharing them with an audience. I was recently in Apocrypha True Storytelling in Tokyo, where I told a story about my father how we finally put his soul to rest and made my peace with him. I also organized a poetry reading afternoon designed only for women in my cozy tatami room where I shared my poems inspired by my feminine spirit. Today, I’m soon off to my favorite Japanese onsen to pamper my midlife body and to relax with friends. Soon, I’m so looking forward to be surrounded by one of the best springs in my life– Japanese Sakura in Tokyo where the cherry blossoms will envelope our lives here– it’s going to be like heaven on earth. - You are so right about sharing your writing! There are so many other things I want to ask you, Rosie, I even had more questions prepared, but somehow I feel that this story is complete. Even though many things are left unsaid, I shall ask you no more. I feel that it’s a good place to end – the spring, the beginning. And this is what I wish you: that every end becomes a new beginning and every full stop is but a sigh before the start of the new chapter. - I totally agree with you Vira, now you can go ahead and write wherever your thoughts take you. I think of you as ‘the moon’ and I ‘the star’ or you ‘the sun’ and I ‘the flower’ (or vice versa), there is a magical connection or say a creative interdependency. Yes, there is life’s hidden plan in every honest and intense encounter, this is what I deeply believe, because these encounters transform something in us forever…

"The government is committed to bringing Vijay Mallya back to face justice. We are considering steps for Mallya's deportation," foreign ministry spokesman Vikas Swarup told the media here. He said Mallya had responded to show cause notice and the government was consulting legal experts on the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) request for the deportation of Mallya, who owns more than Rs.9,000 crore of various Indian banks.
Centre issues notification for protection of Good Samaritans New Delhi, April 22 (iANS): The government on Friday issued a notification for the protection of Good Samaritans in the wake of the Supreme Court (SC) direction on helping accident victims. The Supreme Court had directed all the states to follow the Centre's guidelines that encouraged witnesses in road accidents to report to police and also help survivors with medical treatment. The apex court also directed the Centre to publish its guidelines notified last year to ensure that all those who help accident victims/survivors were not harassed by the police. "In this regard, notification for protection of Good Samaritan issued by Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) is available at http:// www.mor th.nic.in/ showfile.asp?lid=1709 and Standard Operating Procedure (SoPs) for the examination of Good Samaritans by the police or during trial is available at http://www. morth.nic.in/showfile. asp?lid=2002," read a ministry of home affairs statement.

the number of deaths allegedly due to sunstroke increased to 73 in the state. "Of the 73 allegations, two death cases have been confirmed due to sunstroke," SRC P K Mohapatra said adding 46 other cases were under examination by the district collectors.
India-Pakistan leadership determined to continue dialogue process: Basit New Delhi, April 22 (iANS): Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit on Friday evening said the leadership of India and Pakistan is "determined" to pursue the peace process, but Islamabad still awaits New Delhi's response on resumption of Foreign Secretary level talks. Interacting with members of the All India Muslim Majlis Mushwarat, an apex body of various Muslim groups at Abul Fazal Enclave, the high commissioner said that despite the terror attack on the airbase in Pathankot, communication links between the two countries did not get snapped. "There is a need to work together to carry forward the peace process so that the South Asian region is rid of terrorism, hunger and poverty," he said. Basit's statement on Friday comes after he last week stated that the
"peace process is suspended", which was contradicted by the Pakistan foreign ministry on the same day. On Friday, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Vikas Swarup, said at a briefing, that "talks with Pakistan are not suspended". Earlier, Basit was welcomed by Mushawarat Chief Navid Hamid, Secretary General Mujtaba Farooqi and other members. Basit said it is strange that SAARC had not achieved the desired goal of regional cooperation like other regional blocs in the world due to various disputes among the member countries. "It is time for us to resolve these issue amicably and peacefully," he said. He added that the efforts to this end of both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif
"are highly laudable". Referring to the condition of minorities in Pakistan, the envoy claimed that they are not facing any discrimination or victimisation. In fact Pakistan faces more sectarian violence and clashes than attacks on minorities, he said. The high commissioner said that adequate representation is given to minorities in legislative assemblies and the national assembly. He acknowledged that the Blasphemy Law is "misused" by some forces. However, he said that more Muslims were held guilty under this law than non-Muslims. He said that there is only three percent minorities in the country. "A bogey has been raised that at the time of creation of Pakistan there was more than 23 per cent minorities, and now only three per cent. No one understands the
fact that bulk percentage of minorities were livng in East Pakistan, now Bangladesh," he said. He praised the progress achieved by Muslims in all fields in India. He also mentioned the role of Indian religious leaders and others in their secular approach. Basit said that "some elements are trying to malign Islam for their own vested interests". "We need to work together for unity among Muslims who are divided today on the basis of sect, ideology and region." He said that India is the second largest Muslims nation in the world and the country's secular and democratic system enables them to get opportunities in development of the nation. The high commissioner said that Pakistan has also made strides in various fields.
New Delhi, April 22 (iANS): The Supreme Court on Friday ordered that the Uttarakhand High Court order, removing President's rule in the hill state and restoring Congress' Harish Rawat as chief minister, be kept in abeyance till April 27. A bench of Justice Dipak Mishra and Justice Shiva Kirti Singh, while passing its orders, asked the high court to provide the copies of its April 21 judgment to all the parties by April 26. "The judgment shall be filed before this court on that day (April 26)," the order said. It also ruled that there would be no revocation of the presidential proclamation till April 27 when the court will again hear the matter. "It is directed that the judgment of the high court shall remain in abeyance till April 27. That apart, as undertaken by Mukul Rohatgi, the attorney general, the Union of India shall not revoke the presidential proclamation till the next date of hearing." The order came after an hour-long arguments on the central government's petition seeking stay of the high court order. While the top court put in abeyance the operation of the high court verdict, it indicated in the course of the arguments that it may refer the entire matter to the constitution bench as it involved important issues. As the bench was about to pass its order, senior counsel Kapil Sibal, appearing for Uttarakhand Assembly Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal, said that its order would amount to granting final relief sought by the central government in their challenge to the high court verdict. Addressing the concern, Justice Singh said that they are not interfering with the order of floor test on April 29, as directed by the high court. Senior counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Rawat, said: "Your lordships are upholding what has been
Rawat suo motu taking charge as CM illegal: BJP DehrADuN, April 22 (pTi): BJP today accused Harish Rawat of taking charge as Chief Minister in an "unconstitutional manner" saying it's illegal to assume office "suo motu" before the Uttarakhand High Court order quashing imposition of President's rule in the state and reviving his government could reach the Centre and the Governor. "By takingcharge suo motu as Chief Minister, Rawat has created a constitutional crisis," state BJP Spokesman Munna Singh Chauhan told reporters here. The High Court order quashing President's rule and reinstating the state government should have been implemented by the President, the Centre or the Governor, he said. He also objected to Rawat holding two Cabinet meetings since last evening saying it was illegal and in violation of democratic norms to convene the meetings before proving majority on April 29 as directed by the High Court. As assuming charge of chief minister suo motu is illegal so are the Cabinet meetings chaired by him. And hence the decisions taken in the meetings null and void, Chauhan said. He requested the Governor to instruct state's Chief Secretary to ensure decisions taken by the Cabinet at the last two meetings are not implemented. quashed by the high court" and suggested that Rawat should continue as chief minister but not act till April 27. Countering the resistance by Singhvi and Sibal to the court staying the operation of the high court verdict till April 27, Attorney General Rohatgi said: "You should take advantage of the judgment but I should not seek stay of it." Addressing the court on the central government's petition, he told the court that it should stay the effect of the order passed by the high court on April 21 as "it can't be allowed to be implemented to the disability of the other parties" since in the absence of the reasoned judgment, they can't challenge it in its entirety. Besides this, Attorney General Rohatgi referred to the speaker not allowing voting on the appropriation bill even though 27 Bharatiya Janata Party legislators and nine Congress members had sought voting. He said that if Kunjwal had allowed the division as sought by the BJP and rebel Congress members,
then the appropriation bill would not have got through (passed) thereby resulting in the fall of the Rawat government. Rohatgi also referred to the instance of 'horse trading' of legislators and Rawat speaking about money in a sting operation. In response, Singhvi said that for the sake of argument, if it was assumed that what Rohatgi was saying was true, yet one single instance was not enough to invoke article 356 of the constitution and impose the President's rule, referring to the apex court judgment in the case of then Karnataka chief minister S.R.Bommai, who was removed as the chief minister by the governor in 1989 without being given an opportunity to prove his strength on the floor of the house. Meanwhile, as senior counsel C.A. Sundaram, appearing for the nine disqualified Congress members who have also moved the apex court, sought to address the court, Sibal said that they have already moved the high court, which will hear their pleas on Saturday.

Landless earthquake victims missing out as Nepal rebuilds

LONDON, APRIL 22 (thOMSON REUtERS FOUNDAtION): A year after the deadly earthquake in Nepal, thousands of people, especially women, are being deprived of funds to rebuild because they do not own land or cannot prove they owned the land where they lived, Oxfam said on Friday. Nepal’s government requires proof of ownership, but many victims have lost documents and others did not formally own the land where they lived, said a report by the international anti-poverty organisation. The government this month began distributing grants of 200,000 Nepali rupees ($1,900) to families that can prove they owned land before the earthquake, which struck on April 25, 2015. “Families who are landless and who were living on unregistered land are very much uncertain about the future and support that the government had promised,” said Prabin Man Singh, research and policy coordinator for Oxfam, who co-authored the report. “Those families are the poorest and the most vulnerable among the victims.” Some 3 million people are living in temporary shelters with tarpaulin roofs ahead of Nepal’s monsoon season, according to Save the Children, CARE International and other agencies. Land tenure is largely undocumented in Nepal, and data is limited and contradictory, the Oxfam report said. It cited one pre-quake government report that said as many as 480,000 families, or 9% of the population, did not have access to land, and another report that said a third of Nepal’s farmers did not own the land they cultivated. The United Nations has said a quarter of Nepalese households - about 1.3 million - did not have any land or enough land to support families. But Oxfam said that in post-earthquake surveys, more than 90%of people claimed to own their own land before the disaster. As reconstruction plans are instituted, Oxfam said women are often excluded because they “are less likely to inherit land, have land registered in their name or obtain documentation to prove their entitlement.” Under Nepal’s constitution adopted last September, women have equal rights to own land. But inheritance laws have kept the ownership numbers low. Donors pledged $4.1 billion for reconstruction after the earthquake, but aid groups have criticised the slow pace of government reconstruction efforts.
In China’s shadow, Southeast Asia looks to replace ageing fighter jets SINGAPORE/KUALA LUMPUR, APRIL 22 (REUtERS): With an eye on China’s more muscular stance in the South China Sea, Southeast Asian governments are stepping up efforts to replace ageing fighter aircraft fleets, paving the way for multi-billion dollar deals in a boon for warplane makers. Despite tight budgets across the region, sales executives say they are busier than ever after a five-year lull - and both industry and government sources say the next months could see several multi-billion dollar deals from Malaysia to Vietnam. A trade conference held in Kuala Lumpur this week thronged with would-be buyers and salesmen from Russian, French, British, Chinese, Pakistani and American firms. Held every other year, attendees reported it was busier than ever. A prime drawcard was one of the region’s biggest prizes: Malaysia, which is set to finally replace its Russian 1990s-era MiG-29 fighters after several years of delays. Industry sources say Kuala Lumpur could buy up to 18 jets, a deal potentially worth more than $2.5 billion. Options include the Saab Gripen, the Eurofighter Typhoon, Russian Sukhoi Su-30, and the Sino-Pakistani JF-17. France is optimistic about winning an order for Dassault-built Rafales but other bidders are also hopeful. “We are hoping to make Malaysia the ninth country to buy the Typhoon,” said John Brosnan, who heads the Asian business for BAE Systems, one of the partners in the Eurofighter consortium. fence ministry did not respond to requests for comment on the talks. Vietnam, eyeing options beyond traditional supplier Russia, is among those next on the buyers list. It has had preliminary talks with Saab and France’s Dassault to purchase at least 12 fighter jets, industry sources and a separate source familiar with the government talks said. They seem to be keen on moving away from Russia, but it has been dormant so far,” said Kaj Rosender, regional director for Gripen exports at Saab. “It looks like the next call will be on Vietnam.” Industry sources say Vietnam is also in talks with Moscow over several Su-35s. Officials at Rosoboronexport, Russia’s arms export agency, declined to comment on any negotiations.
‘Russian forces in Syria fired on Israeli military aircraft’ JERUSALEM, APRIL 22(REUtERS): Russian forces in Syria have fired at least twice on Israeli military aircraft, prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to seek improved operational coordination with Moscow, Israel’s top-selling newspaper said on Friday. The unsourced report in Yedioth Ahronoth gave no dates or locations for the incidents nor any indication Israeli planes were hit. Russia mounted its military intervention in Syria in September to shore Damascus up amid a now 5-year-old rebellion. Separately, Israel’s Channel 10 TV said a Russian warplane approached an Israeli warplane off the Mediterranean coast of Syria last week but that there was no con-
HIV infection can prematurely age patients by 5 yrs NEw YORK, APRIL 22 (IANS): Although a combination of antiretroviral therapies has led to a decrease in the mortality rates in people with HIV infection, a new study has found that these patients often show signs of premature ageing. Researchers discovered that the HIV-virus infection prematurely advances the human biological ageing process on an average by five years. This further propels the onset of age-related diseases like cardiovascular disease, neurocognitive impairment, and liver problems, thus increasing the risk of mortality by 19%. “The medical issues in treating people with HIV have changed. Now we worry about diseases related to ageing, like cardiovascular disease, neurocognitive impairment, and liver problems,” said Howard Fox, professor at University of Nebraska in the US. tact between them. An Israeli military spokesman declined comment. Netanyahu’s office and the Russian embassy in Israel did not immediately respond. Israel, which has repeatedly bombed Syria to foil suspected arms handovers to Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas, was quick to set up an operational hotline with Moscow designed to avoid accidentally trading fire with Russian interventionary forces. Visiting Moscow on Thursday, Netanyahu told Russian President Vladimir Putin in televised remarks: “I came here with one main goal - to strengthen the security coordination between us so as to avoid mishaps, misunderstandings and unnecessary confrontations.”

Vietnamese officials rarely comment on procurement matters, and did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. FOCUSSING MINDS While reluctant to comment publicly, officials in countries including Indonesia and Vietnam privately say their renewed interest in new fighter jets is driven in large part by China’s growing presence in the disputed South China Sea. “Rising tensions in (the Asia Pacific region) have seen a long overdue process of military modernization move up the political agenda in a number of countries,” Craig Caffrey, principal analyst at
hina is getting closer to building maritime nuclear power platforms that could one day be used to support Chinese projects in the disputed South China Sea, a widely-read state-run newspaper said on Friday. China has rattled nerves with its military and construction activities on the islands it occupies in the South China Sea, including building runways, though Beijing says most of what it is building is for civilian purposes, like lighthouses. The Global Times, an influential tabloid published by the ruling Communist Party’s official People’s Daily, said the nuclear power platforms could “sail” to remote areas and provide a stable power supply. Liu Zhengguo, head of the general office of China Shipbuilding Industry Corp, which is in charge of designing and building the platforms, told the paper that the company is “pushing forward the work”. “The development of nuclear power platforms is a burgeoning trend,” Liu said. “The exact number of plants to be built (by the company) depends on the market demand.” The paper quoted a January report from the China Securities Journal that a demonstration platform is expected to be completed by 2018 and put into service by the next year. Chinese naval expert Li Jie told the newspaper the platforms could provide power for lighthouses, search and rescue equipment, defence facilities, airports and harbours in the South China Sea. “Normally we have to burn oil or coal for power,” Li said. “Given the long distance between the Nansha Islands and the Chinese mainland and the changing weather and oceanic conditions, transporting fuel could be an issue, which is why developing the maritime nuclear power platform is of great significance,” he added, using the Chinese name for the Spratlys. IHS Jane’s said in a report. “The Philippines, Indonesia, Japan and Vietnam are all following China’s lead and we see no sign of this trend coming to an end.” Beijing for its part says it needs the facilities for selfdefence and says the United States and others are militarising the region, not China. By rights, U.S. defence firms should be benefitting as the region renews and revamps - they were a heavy presence in Southeast Asian sales 1980s and 1990s. But they now they face tough competition, as well as tighter purse strings. Thailand, which has Northrop F-5s and Lockheed Martin F-16s, has
bought the Saab Gripen and could order more from the Swedes, say industry sources familiar with the negotiations. “We do want new jets, we have long-term plans, but we don’t have the money for it,” Major General Kongcheep Tantrawanit, Thai defence ministry spokesman, said. Boeing executives had been plugging their F/A-18E/F Super Hornets to Malaysia, which operates the older
Boeing F-18 Hornet variants. But Kuala Lumpur appears to be leaning towards the Europeans, say industry sources. Meanwhile, Indonesia, which operates older Lockheed Martin F-16s, is close to an order for Russian Su35s to supplement its Su30s, industry and government sources said. The region’s other supplier, of course, is China itself.

raging Vardy leaves leicester in a bind in premier league tilt
London, ApriL 22 (AFp): His exploits with Leicester City have alerted Hollywood scriptwriters, but an on-pitch indiscretion by Jamie Vardy has compromised his unheralded team's extraordinary bid for the Premier League title. With 22 goals in the season to date, Vardy has become the symbol of a football fairytale, but his dismissal during last weekend's 2-2 draw with West Ham United leaves Leicester in the lurch. Sent off after being shown a second yellow card for diving, Vardy reacted by angrily berating referee Jon Moss and has accepted a Football Association misconduct charge for his outburst that could keep him on the sidelines for two matches. "Vardy has been one of the best players in the league," said his Leicester
colleague Danny Simpson, who did his best to put on a brave face. "Other players have scored in the team and before last week Vards hadn't scored for five or six games, so we'll deal with it." Va rd y ' s d i z z y i n g achievements have caught the eye of British screenwriter Adrian Butchart, who is in talks about turning the 29-year-old's rags-to-riches tale into a film. It is a beguiling story, which has seen Vardy transform himself from non-league scrapper in English football's seventh tier into England international, Player of the Year nominee and potential Premier League champion. The scrawny striker's gritty back story, fiery temperament and hard-running playing style have turned him into something of an anti-hero for Leicester's supporters, who have never

book post made by Vardy in October 2011 -- "Chat shit get banged" -- has become the go-to put-down among
British youngsters on social media. But while Leicester's fans revel in Vardy's outlaw status, the West Ham incident suggested that the rough edges that once saw him convicted of assault during his nonleague days have not been smoothed away. British newspapers this week were splattered with pictures of Vardy pillorying Moss, his face screwed into a furious scowl, his right index finger jabbed towards the official's face. The red card rules Vardy out of Sunday's home game with Swansea City and his acceptance of the FA charge could mean he misses next weekend's challenging trip to Manchester United as well. Vardy's latest scrape has also rekindled memories of the pre-season incident in which he was caught on camera racially
goading an Asian man in a casino, for which he was fined by Leicester. He later apologised. Gary Lineker, Leicester's most famous former player, defended Vardy against accusations of racism in a recent Guardian interview, describing the incident as a "mistake", but met with a backlash on social media. Both Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri and England counterpart Roy Hodgson have supported Vardy over his West Ham dismissal, with both men adamant that he did not dive. But it changes nothing for Leicester, who are five points clear of second-place Tottenham Hotspur and embarking upon the biggest four-game sequence in the club's history without their top scorer and talisman. Leonardo Ulloa, who came on to score a stop-
page-time penalty against West Ham, is expected to step in for Vardy and leftback Christian Fuchs has backed the Argentine striker to prove himself a capable deputy. "It's a new situation for us because Jamie hasn't missed a game yet, but I think we can cope," Fuchs told the BBC. Every time Leonardo Ulloa comes off the bench he has done well and he's a big part of the team." Ulloa's four goals this season include a dramatic late winner against Norwich City in February, while Vardy's regular strike partner Shinji Okazaki has chipped in with six goals. But neither player has captured the imagination like the snarling Vardy, who can only hope that his selfinflicted absence does not spell doom for Leicester's title dream.

Apologetic for Christ
A
pologetic is the discipline that deals with a rational defense of Christian faith. Christian apologetics is neither a new practice nor is it unbiblical. It comes from the Greek word ''apologia'' which means to give a reason or defense. Apologetic is the theological discipline that defends the truth of the Christian message. Defending the faith, therefore, is a Biblical practice. The discipline of apologetics seeks to instruct Christians in such defense. Christian apologetics have taken many forms over the centuries, starting with Paul the Apostle in the early Church. . In contemporary times Christianity has been defended through the work of figures such as Ravi Zacharias, Robert Hutchinson, John Lennox, Doug Wilson, Lee Strobel, Lee Strobel, Francis Collins, Henry M. Morris, Alister McGrath, Ken Ham, Alvin Plantiga, and William Lane Craig. Apologetics have based their defense of Christianity on historical evidence, philosophical arguments and arguments from other disciplines. One of the most pressing apologetic model or praxis in the
Naga’s present context should be how to live out an authentic Christian faith. The need for the Nagas to wake up from their slumber is a must; it is now or never. Sub consciously, we are all aware of the God we worship; be it in the church, office, school, booze joints, bars, colleges etc -whenever someone speaks ill about our faith, most of the Nagas are always ready to give a defense about their faith ; this signifies that many of them have proved to be a profound apologetic. Directly or indirectly, all the Christians are apologetic in propagating the gospel in our daily life. But, instead of propagating the gospel to the people of other faiths around us, we have become a stumbling block to them in bringing them to the saving knowledge of Christ and have failed to live our lives up to the mark of the Cross. We Nagas consciously believe in Jesus as our Lord and Savior who died for our sins and who rose again form the death to give us life. While in the text John 3:16; by using the word “believes” where its original meaning is to believe God continuously, it is a continuing process. God wants us to believe in Him and follow His paradigms in our daily lives.
But today many of us have failed to fulfill the protocol of God’s decree in our lives in many areas. The theological praxis here is a must for every believer to apply it in our lives and to endure the hardships till the end. John 8:32 says “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Likewise, many of our people know the truth, the protocols of God and its decrees. But surprisingly, we don’t allow our hearts to be free from the bitter truths that is binding us. It is true that almost all the Nagas today believe in God; but the irony is that most of us only want to be confined in our comfort zones and compromise ourselves with the worldly pleasures. Hence, we have failed to live our lives according to the teachings of Christ. Theological praxis and the job of an apologetic is a must for every believer to take up the cause of Jesus Christ in spreading the gospel to every corner of the world and in fulfilling the command of Christ given to all of us to go to every nation and spread the Salvation plan of God. The Naga Christian leaders do not require fancy means to take on the role of the apologist. We
My vote is my future, your vote is your future and our vote is our future
are not called to rely on our wit and act clever; we simply need to be content to present the truth. No matter how bleak the situation, we need not be disheartened because God is the ultimate hope for us. When we study about the calling of Peter, it sheds immense light on how we, as Christians, are destined to reign as co-heirs with Christ, because our Lord came to give us life in abundance. Before Peter met Jesus, he only had mundane hopes. His biggest goal each day was for a bigger catch of fish. Many a time he would come home empty-handed. Then Jesus happened. Jesus changed Peter from a hopeless fisherman into a wonderful fisher of men! Peter now possessed true hope and a clear purpose in life. In Jesus, we have a living hope. And the hope of life in the kingdom of God is one that will never perish, decay or fade. After the recent Easter Sunday bombings by the Taliban in Pakistan which claimed 72 lives, the spokesperson representing the terrorist group said, "It was our people who attacked the Christians in Lahore, celebrating Easter. It is our message to the government that we will carry out
such attacks again until Sharia is imposed in the country." Even though Christians compose only 2% of the population, they remain unflinchingly apologetic in their approach to life. In fact, these kinds of trials only fuel them to witness all the more ferociously for Christ. If we compare and contrast, the Naga people do not seem to face a life and death situation such as our Christian counterparts in Pakistan. After all, Christianity is the major religion in Nagaland, we are declared a dry state and our motto states that we are for Christ. But the irony lies in the fact that the invisible enemy is all the more deadly. Each time we fail as a Christian, we deny Jesus just as Peter did, and the same story echoes through the ages. I would like to challenge all of us through the words of C.S. Lewis, "Only a real risk tests the quality of a belief." The time is now here for every Naga believer to generate an apologetic approach - to sanctify, speak out with meekness and fear, and to defend and live the faith we preach. May the living God empower us as we radiate His likeness and witness for His glory.
I
am happy that the CEO Nagaland has taken serious steps towards purification of the Electoral Rolls. I wish we all understand that ‘My vote is my future, your vote is your future and our vote is our future; that, bogus vote ruins my future, bogus vote ruins your future and bogus vote ruins our future; and that, proxy voters are assassinators of my future, proxy voters are assassinators of your future and proxy voters are assassinators of our future.’ There is nothing greater than hope for the future in life. When there is no hope for the future, life is meaningless. Save your future, don’t allow yourself to destroy your future. Accepting bribe for vote is accepting sale of future. Accepting bribe for vote is more than prostitution. Accepting bribe is sin and shall lose salvation for it is intentional corruption. Having registered multiple votes only shows one is a liar before people and God. Voting by the under aged is dishonesty, unlawful and a sin. It will bring curse upon one’s future. One should avoid by all means. BLOs and BLAs should strictly follow the law during authentication. There should be no bogus votes. All entries pertaining to name and age should be properly authenticated. Where the electoral roll is more than 65% of the census population or Church population, we demand that the District Election Officers should order reenumeration. In this purification drive of the voter list, I wish the people of Nagaland live up to the expectations of a Christian State. We also want that the polling officers enforce the laws of election without fear or favour, affection or ill will. You have Magisterial power and security to enforce the law. We want the effective implementation of the provisions of the Constitution and the guidelines framed therein. K. Therie President NPCC

Drugs with reference to Alcohol and Tobacco Z. K. Pahrii Pou

BTC Pfutsero
am not expert on this topic but I have great concern for those persons who are being hooked by drugs especially alcohol and tobacco. Many Christians keep asking, “Is drinking alcohol or smoking or chewing tobacco ‘sin’? But that is not an important question. The more important question is: can we live without using alcohol and tobacco? Is drinking alcohol or smoking is ‘good’ or ‘bad’, and whether using them have helped an individual and society to live a fuller and respected life? Let’s reflect on the effect of using alcohol and tobacco in our society today. Drug: A drug is, in the broadest sense, a chemical substance that has known biological effects on human or other animals. In other words, it is a medicine or other substance which has physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body. For instance, alcohol, caffeine, aspirin and nicotine are all drugs. The vast majority of drugs are used to treat medical conditions, both physical and mental. Some, however, are used outside the medical setting for their effects on the mind. These are referred to as recreational drugs. Psychoactive drugs: Drugs that affect a person’s mental state, whether prescribed for a medical condition (for example, antidepressants), or taken for recreational purposes (such as alcohol and heroin), are called psychoactive drugs. These drugs affect the way a person thinks and feels- which
may also affect the way they behave. The most commonly used psychoactive drugs, apart from drugs taken on prescription, are alcohol and tobacco. The most commonly used illegal psychoactive drug is cannabis (marijuana). People use psychoactive drugs for many reasons- for fun or excitement; to feel good, better or different; to counteract negative feelings; because they are bored or curious; because their friends or family do it; because they have dependence on the drug. Friend’s pressure is a strong factor in leading people to drug habit. Drug Dependence: Drug dependence may occur when a person continues to use drugslegal or illegal-even though their drug use causes them significant problems. It is regarded by many as a medical condition or a disorder not directly under the control of the individual. The ‘term’, with its negative implications, is not used any longer. Drugs and young people: Young people take drugs for much the same reasons as older people, often with the added element of rebellion. However, the consequences can be much worse. Childhood and adolescence are critical times for brain development, and the brain is more sensitive to the influences of drugs and alcohol during these periods. For example, there is evidence that alcohol use in young people can lead to impaired learning and memory which can affect them for the rest of their lives. Alcoholism: There are 62.5 million alcohol users in India. Gujarat, Mizoram, Manipur and Nagaland prohibits sale of alcohol. Recently Bihar joined
this group and Tamil Nadu is on its way to total ban on alcohol. About 2 billion people worldwide consume alcoholic drinks, which can have immediate and long term consequences on health and social life. Over 76 million people are currently affected by alcohol use disorders, such as alcohol dependence and abuse. Alcohol causes 1.8 million deaths a year. Worldwide alcohol causes a loss of 58.3 million DALYs annually (disabilityadjusted life years). 34% of those who attempted suicide were abusing alcohol. It accounts for 3.2% of all deaths worldwide. Effect on Individual: Use of alcohol, leads to unintentional & intentional injuries and death. It accompanies aggression leads to violence and causes traffic injuries. It causes preventable deaths such as falls, and fires. Diseases related to drinking: According to experts, alcohol consumption has been linked to more than 60 diseases. These diseases include alcoholic psychoses, alcoholdependence syndrome, alcoholic polyneuropathy (disease affecting the nerves), cirrhosis (liver disease/cancer), breast cancer, increase high blood pressure, cause depression, and so on. Social and Economic Problems: Alcohol consumption can have adverse social and economic effects on the individual drinker, the drinker’s immediate environment and society as a whole. It is of utmost concern that many of our leaders are heavy drinkers. They look for partying wherever they go and totally failed their responsibility as leaders. Drink-
ing and leading does not lead society to safety. Work performance: In Costa Rica, an estimated 30% of absenteeism may be due to alcohol. In India about 40% of work accidents have been attributed to alcohol consumption. Heavy drinking at work may reduce productivity. Heavy drinking or alcohol abuse may lead to unemployment and unemployment may lead to increased drinking. Family: Drinking can cause home accidents and violence/ breaking down of family. Drinking leads to child abuse. Non-drinking family members develop anxiety, fear and depression. It also is a cause of divorce for many families. There is a huge financial cost of alcoholic purchase and later one for medical treatment. It leads to lose of labour and wages. It increases the risk of transmission of HIV infection. It is the cause of many domestic violence. Tobacco: Most people know tobacco is really bad for them. It is indeed a strange habit of human beings that inhales smoke deliberately into one’s system, and continuing the process again and again to derive satisfaction. Its use is the leading cause for many preventable diseases in the world. Tobacco is devastating to human body and secondhand smoke is equally damaging to those around it. According to a research, tobacco kills more than AIDS, road accidents, murder, legal drugs, illegal drugs and suicide combined. Nicotine: Nicotine is a very strong addiction, and it becomes a very difficult to quit tobacco dependence. When
you use tobacco products, nicotine is quickly absorbed into your bloodstream. Within 10 seconds the nicotine reaches your brain. It causes the brain to release adrenaline, creating a buzz of pleasures and energy. The buzz fades quickly though, and leaves you feeling tired, a little down, and wanting the buzz again. This feeling is what makes you light up the next cigarette. Since your body is able to build up a high tolerance to nicotine, you’ll need to smoke more and more cigarettes in order to get the nicotine’s pleasurable effects and prevent withdrawal symptoms. This ups and downs cycle repeats over and over, leading to addiction. Children and teens are especially sensitive to nicotine making it easier for them to become addicted. Cigarette makers know that nicotine addiction helps sell their products. Cigarettes today deliver more nicotine more quickly than ever before. Tobacco companies also use additives and chemicals to make them more addictive. Effects of smoking on health: The effects of smoking are serious. It can harm nearly every organ of the body. Smoking weakens body’s immune system from protecting itself from infection and diseases. It leads to respiratory infections, doubles the risks of developing rheumatoid arthritis, 30% to 40% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, decreases bone density leading to fracture, harms blood cells and damage the function of heart, affect lungs and cause breathing problem, affect eyesight/vision. Tobacco smoke contains more 7,000 chemicals. About 70 of them are
known to cause cancer. It had negatively impacted male and female fertility and is harmful to pregnant women and their unborn babies. Secondhand smoke: Secondhand smoke is the combination of smoke from the burning end of the cigarette and the smoke exhaled by smokers. When you are around a person who is smoking, you inhale the dangerous chemicals as the smoker. Sm okele ss tob a c c o: Smokeless tobacco is tobacco that is not burned. It includes chewing tobacco, dip, snuff, and betel quid. At least 28 chemicals in these products have been found to cause cancer. Smokeless tobacco may cause tooth decay in the exposed tooth roots. It can also cause your gums to pull away from your teeth. In India, tobacco chewing accounts for 30% of the total consumption, beedi smoking (54%) and cigarette smoking (16%). Paan, paan masala, gutka, khaini, gul, bajjar, etc are other forms of smokeless tobacco. Some facts and figures about tobacco effects: There are nearly 1.3 billion smokers in the world. One out of two smokers died of smoking related diseases. India has more than 300 million smokers. India has the highest rate of oral cancer in the world with 90% of the patients being tobacco chewers. In 2010, 930,000 adults died due to tobacco in India. Over 60% of those suffering from heart disease below the age of 40 years are smokers. Approximately half of all cancers in men in India are tobacco related. The profit made by the tobacco companies is equivalent
to the medical expenses spent by smokers. Measures taken by Indian government to discourage smoking: Government prohibits and restricts advertisement in mass media (movies) about tobacco. It imposes heavy tax on the production and sale of tobacco. The State also prohibits smoking in public places (like railways station, Bus stations, schools, colleges, etc) with heavy fine or imprisonment. It requires 75% of tobacco packet being devoted to create awareness about the danger of using tobacco. Life is once-forall. Be safe, friends. Reflection: Hunger and thirst is the foremost human experience that needs to be addressed before meeting any other needs. Therefore, food and drinks are important for survival and for health. Be wise, foods and drinks bring life and unity but at the same time it can bring division and death. Bible taught us to be as wise as ‘serpent’ by choosing life over death. Use of alcohol and tobacco affect not only individual’s health but also lead to total collapse of family and its economy, destroys social cohesion, and lead to moral and spiritual bankruptcy. The Bible says that our body is the temple of God and that we should not destroy it (I Corinthians 3:16). Have we chased out God from us by pouring in alcohol and inhaling smoke? We are not only ‘the temple of God’ but we are made in the image of God. Are we destroying the image of God through food, drinking and smoking habits? If yes, then destroying the very image of God not ‘sin’? May God help you to find the right answer.

Music legend Prince dead P
rince, the innovative pop superstar whose songwriting and eccentric stage presence electrified fans around the world with hits including "Purple Rain" and "When Doves Cry," died on Thursday in Minnesota. He was 57. His influential, genre-defying music blended jazz, funk, R&B, disco and rock, winning seven Grammy Awards and an Oscar. Prince was found unresponsive in an elevator at his Paisley Park Studios compound, which included his home, in the Minneapolis suburb of Chanhassen, according to the Carver County Sheriff's Office. In a transcript of a 911 call made from the complex and released by the sheriff's office, an unidentified male initially reported that someone was dead at the home, later identifying that victim as Prince. The sheriff's office said it was investigating the circumstances. The local medical examiner's office said in a tweet that an autopsy had been scheduled for Friday. Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger hailed his fellow singer and musician as "revolutionary" and one of the most unique and exciting artists of the last 30 years. Prince was an original lyricist and a "startling" guitar player, he added. "His talent was limitless," Jagger wrote on Twitter. President Barack Obama called Prince "one of the most gifted and prolific musicians of our time," and said few had influenced "the sound and trajectory of popular music more distinctly." Distraught devotees gathered outside the Paisley Park compound in mourning. "His music made the hair on your arms stand up," said one, Kristina Dudziak, 44. "It felt like he was making love to his guitar. ... It's a sad day," she added, starting to sob. Sheila E., a singer and percussionist who worked closely with Prince in the 1980s, wrote on Twitter: "My heart is broken. There are no words. I love you!" The performer's death was the most notable passing of a music giant since rock star David Bowie died of cancer at 69 on Jan. 10.
came known as one of the most inventive and eccentric forces in American pop music. Often making a statement with bold fashion choices, the diminutive, 5-feet 2-inch-tall (1.57-meter) star sometimes appeared on stage sporting ruffled shirts and tight pants or elaborate costumes, including chain mail covering his face, a shimmery orange tunic with a cane, or bikini briefs. Calling Prince a "oncein-a-lifetime artist," music TV channel MTV changed its logo to purple in his honour, and Twitter lit up with reaction from stunned friends and fans. He was regarded as a perfectionist who from 1993 to 2000 changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol in an apparent protest against his record label at the time. For a while, he was dubbed "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince."

Selena Gomez's life is becoming a lifetime series
NOW SHOWING
ecause you're never too young to have your own series-length autobiographical drama — one of the newest projects in development from Lifetime, purveyors of schmaltzy made-for-TV movies and surprisingly good TV series, is a scripted series based on the life story of Selena Gomez. Gomez will executive-produce the series, which follows her rise to fame as a Disney Channel actressturned-pop star — following in the steps of Nicki Minaj, who's currently producing a comedy about her childhood on Freeform (formerly ABC Family). Kevin Spacey also signed on to executive-produce. Now, the real questions: Which lucky actress will get to play Gomez, and who will portray the many other young celebs she's grown up with over the years, from her Disney days (Miley Cyrus, Zac Efron, the Jonas Brothers) through her #squad membership (Taylor Swift, Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner)? And how will the series dramatize the greatest romance of the 21st century, the millennial generation's Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor: Jelena? The untitled series is still in development, so stay tuned for more.

An intensely private person, Prince sold more than 100 million records. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, and his most recent album, “HITnRUN: Phase Two” was released in December 2015. Prince became a Jehovah’s Witness about 15 years ago, and was a strict vegan. In 2009, he told PBS television about being born an epileptic and suffering seizures as a child. He also said he was teased in school, and that “early

In 2007, he played the Super Bowl in one of the most celebrated such performances. While he was more accustomed to sold-out arenas, two years ago Prince played perhaps his most intimate gig in the living room of British singer-songwriter Lianne La Havas’ London home with his band, 3rdeyegirl, Billboard said. “We’ll work our way up, if people like us, to bigger venues,” Prince quipped then. Prince was married twice: to his backup singer, Mayte Garcia, in 1996 and then to Manuela Testolini in 2001. Both marriages ended in divorce, and a son he had with Garcia died a week after birth in October 1996. “I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally,” Garcia told People magazine. “He’s with our son now.” Born in Minneapolis as Prince Rogers Nelson on June 7, 1958, he is said to have written his first song at age 7. As well as singing and writing, he played multiple instruments, including guitar, keyboards and drums. In a 1998 interview with Reuters, Prince said he ignored critics and focussed on a quest for great music. “I just do what I feel I’m supposed to do,” he said.

India drops $42 mn claim over aborted Windies tour
New DelHi, april 22 (aFp): India's cricket board has dropped a $42 million damages claim against the West Indies over an abandoned tour in 2014 after the new World Twenty20 champions agreed to return next year, a report said Friday. The huge damages claim lodged by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had threatened to cripple its cash-strapped West Indies counterpart which has long been at loggerheads with its own players. But BCCI president Shashank Manohar told Cricinfo the decision to waive the claim, filed by his predecessor
Narayanaswami Srinivasan's regime, had been made after the West Indies agreed to fulfil their original commitments and the schedule for the tour should be finalised next month. "That is now sorted out because they are going to come back and play here next year," said Manohar. "They have to complete those (unfinished) games. That was a claim raised by the board. (We) would be satisfied by them coming and playing here." The West Indies players flew home from India in October 2014 when a long-running pay dispute came to a head in the middle of the tour.
SC to hear plea for holding IPL matches in Maharashtra New DelHi, april 22 (iaNs): The Supreme Court will hear, on Monday, the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) plea against the Bombay High Court order asking the Indian cricket board to shift all the 12 IPL matches including the final out of the state in the wake of severe drought situation in Vidarbha and Marathwada. A bench of Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Shiva Kirti Singh said that the matter would be listed for hearing as senior counsel Kapil Sibal, appearing for the MCA, mentioned the petition for an early hearing. He also told the court: "We are not against people of Vidarbha and Marathwada and have full sympathy with them." He said there were difficulties including
that of logistics in holding the matches earlier scheduled to be played in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur at any other cricketing venue outside the state. The MCA moved the apex court contesting the high court order directing the shifting of 12 matches outside the state in wake of the unprecedented drought situation in some parts of the state including in Vidarbha and Marathwada. Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur were to host 13 IPL matches including final at Mumbai's Wankhede stadium but the high court, by its April 13 order, taking note of the drought conditions, ordered them to be shifted outside the state. However, later one match was allowed to be played at Pune.
Ronaldo to miss first league game of season
MaDriD, april 22 (reuters): Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo was described as "untouchable" by his manager Zinedine Zidane who confirmed the Portuguese will miss his first La Liga match of the season at Rayo Vallecano on Saturday. The Spanish club's all-time leading scorer, Ronaldo played all 34 league games and 10 Champions League matches in the campaign before straining a thigh muscle in the 3-0 win over Villarreal on Wednesday. He sits out the Rayo game to ensure he will be fit for Tuesday's Champions League semi-
final first leg against Manchester City. "Cristiano is untouchable because his numbers demonstrate that, he deserves to be untouchable," Zidane told a news conference on Friday." "He wanted to play tomorrow but he knows he can't. He felt something in the last game and now we have to bear in mind Tuesday's game." Gareth Bale missed the Villarreal match through injury but the Wales forward will face 16th-placed Rayo. Real are third in La Liga, one point behind Atletico Madrid and leaders Barcelona, after winning their last eight league games.
MiaMi, april 22 (aFp): James Harden drained the game winner on a turnaround jumper with two seconds left as the Houston Rockets clipped the Stephen Curry-less Golden State Warriors 9796 in a first-round NBA playoff contest. Harden's clutch basket Thursday allowed the Rockets to cut the Warriors series lead in the Western Conference tussle to two games to one. "The last shot was typical of what James does," coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. "The move, we've seen before. "The finish, we've seen before. You do get spoiled by it at times, but in these biggest of moments, you can't help but appreciate it." The defending champion Warriors were playing without MVP guard Curry, who has an injured right ankle. The Warriors hope to have Curry back in the fold for game four Sunday at the Toyota Center arena. The Rockets blew a 17-point lead and trailed with 10 seconds left when Trevor Ariza threw away an inbounds pass that resulted in a fastbreak layup by Warriors reserve guard Ian Clark. That set the stage for Harden's heroics. He followed with a quick dribble, drove the lane and spun free before nailing the short jump shot. Golden State forward Draymond Green dribbled the ensuing inbounds pass off his foot and out of bounds for a turnover with one second left.
Curry was inactive for a second consecutive game as Golden State took a cautious approach with his return, opting against having him suit up following four days of rest. If Curry participates in three-on-three drills on Friday and five-onfive Saturday, chances are good that he will return on Sunday. Shaun Livingston started in place for Curry. Harden finished with 35 points, eight rebounds and nine assists to pace five Rockets in double figure scoring. Donatas Motiejunas tallied 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Dwight Howard added 13 points and 13 rebounds but missed two key free throws with 3:07 left. Reserve forward Marreese Speights paced the Warriors with 22 points. "We have to play better as a team," Golden State coach Steve Kerr said. Klay Thompson's playoff three-point streak of 31-straight games ended. It was second longest active streak behind Curry's 41-straight games. Raptors, Thunder dominate IntheotherWesternConference contest Thursday night, Kevin Durant scored a game-high 34 points, Russell Westbrook tallied 26 and the Oklahoma City Thunder cruised to a 131-102 first round playoff win over the Dallas Mavericks. With the victory in front of a crowd of 20,100 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, the Thunder grabbed a 2-1 lead. Game four is scheduled

Sanchez double lifts Arsenal into third place lONDON, april 22 (reuters): Arsenal's resurgent Alexis Sanchez scored twice to help ease their top-four jitters in a 2-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League at a less than full Emirates Stadium on Thursday. Consecutive draws had all but ended Arsenal's chances of overhauling Premier League leaders Leicester City and they began the night only a point above fifth-placed Manchester United in the battle to secure Champions League football. However, Sanchez struck twice before halftime and Arsenal were untroubled by a poor West Brom side as they registered their 500th victory in the Premier League. They moved above Manchester City into third place with 63 points and, with two of their last four games at home to strug-

gling Norwich City and relegated Aston Villa, Arsene Wenger's side are well set to finish in the top four. With many seasonticket holders electing to
miss the game in frustration at another botched title challenge, the atmosphere was flat inside a stadium with lots of empty red seats.
Sanchez did lift the mood, though, as he took his goal tally to five in the last four league games after a lean spell. "Overall we should
have scored more goals," a glum Wenger, who has again faced criticism from fans, said. "Certainly the early goal helped to focus us more on our game. It looks like (Sanchez) is back to his best, he's sharper, more confident and in the first half he was exceptional." Sanchez turned sharply to shoot low past West Brom keeper Ben Foster after six minutes and struck again with a free kick shortly before halftime to put the hosts in control. Gareth McAuley did send a header against the crossbar in the first half for the visitors but Arsenal were untroubled and should have won by a bigger margin. Arsenal's French Olivier Giroud fired straight at Ben Foster and Mesut Ozil was also denied by the keeper, but Arsenal were often guilty of over-elaborating in the final third.
FIFA sets up worker welfare body for Qatar World Cup
DOHa, april 22 (reuters): The head of soccer's world governing body FIFA urged Qatar to hasten improvements in safety and labour conditions for builders working on sites for the 2022 World Cup and declared:"we will not just sit and wait". Gianni Infantino, on a two-day visit to Qatar, announced plans for a special working group to monitor the situation and achnowledged there were still "many challenges". Amnesty International reported on abuses in Qatar's preparations for the World Cup in a wide-ranging report three weeks ago based on the accounts of 132 workers at the sites. It found construction
workers from Nepal and India had been charged recruitment fees and housed in squalid conditions. Infantino said Qatar, the tournament's first Arab host, supported the monitoring initiative. "I acknowledge very much the efforts which are being done. I want to see these efforts now being put in practice," Infantino, elected as president of the scandal-plagued federation in February, told reporters. "Of course we will not just sit and wait. "FIFA will step up its efforts in overseeing....in order to ensure the protection of the workers' rights in the construction of the FIFA World Cup sites is fulfilled" The head of Qatar's Su-
preme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, Hassan alThawadi, has said Doha is working to reduce abuses he described as occurring on construction sites all over the world. Infantino faces pressure from human rights groups to press for reform of labour laws in Qatar including its "kafala" sponsorship system, whereby employers effectively control a worker's freedom to leave the country. Infantino said he had told Qatari Prime Minister Abdullah bin Nasser al-Thani measures taken by Qatari authorities to ensure fair working conditions were going in the right direction. "I, of course, discussed with the prime minister this
morning about this topic, about the Kafala (sponsorship) legislation, about how it will be, or how it is going to change with regard to the workers," he said. Switzerland's attorneygeneral has launched a investigation into FIFA's decision to award the event to Qatar, as well as the 2018 World Cup to Russia, at a vote in December 2010 in Zurich. But Infantino said there was no question of the tournament being held elsewhere. In an earlier statement issued by FIFA, Infantino said the hosting of the World Cup was an opportunity to set a benchmark for fair conditions for all workers in Qatar.
