Rs.1 lakh for the kin of each of the 16 workers who died in the landslide. The Governor also called upon the people to be alert and take necessary precautions as the state is experiencing heavy rainfall. He also advised the state government and district administrations to warn the people living in landslide and flood prone areas. “Later, one of the seriously injured persons died while on the way to the hospital,” he said, adding that the condition of the other injured remains critical. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the deaths. Taking cognizance of the issue, union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday called up Arunachal Pradesh Chief
Minister Kalikho Pul to discuss the floods and the landslide situation. “Singh has assured full central assistance to Arunachal Pradesh to tackle the floods situation arising due to a swollen Noa Dehing river. He has asked Director General of National Disaster Response Force O.P. Singh to rush rescue teams to the landslide-hit Famla village in Tawang, bordering China,” said an official. A high-level committee chaired by the home minister has also approved assistance of Rs.84.33 crore for Arunachal Pradesh to tackle floods. District administration officials said: “The camp where the construction labourers were staying had been buried due to the landslide.” The Arunachal Pradesh
Governor had reviewed the disaster preparedness of the hill state only last week with Chief Minister Kalikho Pul and called for preparedness amongst the people to face any eventuality in case of disaster. The Governor had also advised the state government officials to mobilize volunteers and train the youth on disaster response procedure, starting from village level groups. He said that mock drills must be conducted involving students, volunteers, general public and elders in public places so that they know how to respond during earthquakes or any natural calamities. He had also advised the government to set up and activate control rooms immediately.
Maytas & Gayatri (JV) must first complete SARDP Phase-1 road project: NGRC-1CU DiMapUr, april 22 (MExn): Nagaland Government Registered Class-1 Contractors Union (NGRC1CU), in a representation to the Governor of Nagaland on Friday demanded that the firm Maytas & Gayatri (JV) should be allowed to execute the construction of four laning of Dimapur-Kohima highway amounting to Rs 340 crore only after completion of the 4 road projects under SARDP Phase-1 in Nagaland. The two-laning road projects, which were awarded to the firm in 2010, include: the Longleng–Changtongya road; Mon–Tamlu–Merangkong road, Phek–Pfütsero road, and Zunheboto–Chakhabama road. Referring to the latest Comptroller and Auditor General of India report (CAG) on the SARDP project, the Union, through its president Seyiekuolie and general secretary L. Pukhato Shohe, stated that “Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) had approved two–lan-
ing of the four roads on April 2010 in one package for Rs 1, 296 crore including percentage charges.” However, the CAG report, according to the Union had pointed out that “not a single kilometer in any of the four roads was completed despite an expenditure of Rs 602.34 crore incurred on execution of work.” It also observed that no further progress of work was achieved on any of the four roads since August 2012 and the single–lane roads, which previously existed, had degraded and rendered almost unusable thereby causing hardship to the communities. The Union has also alleged that the contract work under SARDP-NE awarded to Maytas & Gayatri (JV) at Rs 1130. 67 crore was 21.47% above the Nagaland PWD Schedule of Rate (SOR)-2010. “This means an additional 245.81 crore has been freely gifted as bonus” to the firm, it claimed. The Union also alleged, citing ‘reliable source,’ and also from the
representative of Ratna Infrastructure Projects Pvt Ltd that the Maytas & Gayatri (JV) firm after deducting a high commission has further sublet the entire project to one Ratna Infrastructure Project Pvt. Ltd at the Nagaland SOR-2010 rate. It also alleged that Ratna Infrastructure project Pvt. Ltd. has been negotiating to sublet the works at less than 50% below SOR 2010 by further subletting the work for its actual implementation to the local entrepreneurs. In this connection, the Union said it had requested to meet the chairmen of Gayatri & Maytas and Ratna Infrastructure project Pvt. Ltd but only a middleman of the latter met the Union in the office of the Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, PWD Housing. The Union also said it had submitted a representation to the Prime Minister of India and Minister of PWD (Road & bridges), Nagaland in this regard.

Rural livelihood at Phenwenyu, a small village under Tseminyu sub division of Kohima district is seeing a transformation hen–after-hen through backyard poultry farming. A number of farmers from the village have benefitted from the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kohima supported poultry project and their testimonies are promising, as was highlighted by KVK Tesophenyu, Kohima district during an exhibition held at Tseminyu town recently. Phenwenyu comprises of 80 household and its population is largely dependent on agriculturewith paddy, maize, collocasia, chilly, beans, tomato, squash as their main crops. The villagers also grow horticulture crops like plum, pears, peach, wild fig, mango, banana, passion fruit etc. Since the farming system is rain fed, most of the agricultural activities are cultivated and harvested during the kharif season. The villagers remain busy in their fields from April until October and stay idle from November to March. During this lean period, the main livelihood activity of the villagers is stone quarrying. To promote poultry farming in the village, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kohima conducted a frontline demonstration on backyard farming of broiler birds. Participa-
tory Rural Appraisal was conducted and ten women- five each from two Self Help Groups (SHGs) were identified for the demonstration. Before commencement, all the beneficiaries were given training on small-scale rearing of broiler birds in their backyards and 30 number of Vencobb 40 day-old chicks, veterinary medicines, weighing balance and feeds were provided to all the beneficiaries. During the demonstration, vaccination was administered and body weight measured once in two weeks until the birds attained the marketweight. The poultry houses were cleaned regularly, feeds and water were provided to the birds at regular interval. After 45 days, the average body weight and feed conversion ratio of the birds were 2.2 kg and 1.8 respectively. The birds were sold at Rs 140 per kg in Tseminyu town with a net profit of Rs 2, 500 per beneficiary. Encouraged with the success, the stock strength per farmer was increased to 50 chicken and by the end of one year; six batches have already sold their hens with an average net profit of Rs 40,000 per batch. Thus, in an overall, 10 farmers contributed approximately around Rs 2, 40,000 to the village economy in a year. With this success, the farmers are planning to increase the present stock strength to 100 per batch and encourage more families into the broiler-poultry farming business since it is more remunerative and also provides employment opportunity.
