Daily exercise improves bone and joint health

C M Y K

NEw YorK, august 28 (iaNs): Daily exercise and a healthy food regime help minimise bone and joint health decline. According to new research on senior elite athletes, being physically active may significantly improve musculo-skeletal and overall health and delay the effects of ageing. “A lot of the deterioration we see with ageing can be attributed to a more sedentary lifestyle instead of ageing itself,” said lead study author and orthopaedic surgeon Bryan G. Vopat. The positive effects of physical activity on maintaining bone density, muscle mass, ligament, tendon function and cartilage volume are keys to optimal physical function and health. “Prolonged, intense resistance training can increase muscle strength, lean muscle and bone mass more consistently than aerobic exercise alone,” Vopat observed. Sustained and at least moderately intensive aerobic training promotes heart health, increases oxygen consumption, and has been linked to other musculo-skeletal benefits. Flexibility exercises, too, are strongly recommended for active older adults to optimise performance and limit injury. The study also recommended proper nutrition for older, active adults to achieve the above objective. The research appeared in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS).

Nagaland today joined the rest of the country in simultaneous launching of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) at a function held at Hotel Japfu with Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) Speaker Chotisuh Sazo as the chief guest. Formally launching the PMJDY in Nagaland, the NLA Speaker called upon all bankers, State Government officials, and the public to enthusiastically involve themselves in the implementation of PMJDY to make it a “grand success” in Nagaland, and to help in laying the foundation for the State’s “true economic progress and prosperity.” Referring to the announcement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his first Independence Day speech for launching of PMJDY scheme across the country, Sazo said “This is an indication of how fast things are now moving in the central government these days under the new regime of Narendra Modi. I think the Government of Nagaland also will have to work faster if we are to catch up with the central government, and if we are to take maximum advantage of the central schemes. Perhaps, we have to shift to faster gears.” PMJDY intends to give universal access to banking facilities for all households

across the country. “It (PMJDY) is targeted towards 7.5 crore households in India that still remain without banking coverage,” said Sazo adding that this constitutes about 41% of the population. This is to be provided through a bank or through business correspondent. PMJDY, the Speaker said, is not merely to open a savings account in a bank for every household. It has many additional attractive features for the poor, such as Rupay Debit Card, having inbuilt accident in-

State will not be in a position to fully achieve the objectives of the PMJDY without proper telecom connectivity, Sazo urged upon BSNL and other telecom service providers to become more active and involved in providing telecom connectivity to all parts of the State. Regretting that by and large, Nagas have not yet developed the habit of saving, the Speaker said, “We are basically good spenders. But if we are to be a developed and self supporting society, developing a saving habit is a must.” He also urged upon the people of Nagaland to start practicing thrift, and to develop the habit of saving in the future. The launching function also witnessed live telecast of the address of the Prime Minister from New Delhi, screening of a film on financial inclusion and distribution of account opening kits to beneficiaries. Earlier, the welcome address was delivered by G.C. Pandey, GM, State Bank of India, Corporate Centre, Mumbai. Minister for forest, environment & wildlife Dr. Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire, minister for rural development & REPA C.L. John, minister for health & family welfare P.Longon, chief secretary Banuo Z. Jamir and several other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana connects Nagaland surance cover of one lakh rupees. It will also have overdraft facility up to Rs. 5000 in respect of Aadhar enabled accounts. “This also incidentally highlights the need for giving Aadhar number to every citizen in the State, if we want our people to fully utilize this scheme, as well as many other central schemes,” NLA Speaker said and wished the Chief Secretary to look into this, “because the Direct Benefit Transfer under many other government schemes can be successfully implemented only if there is universal coverage by bank accounts along with Aadhar number.” Noting that Nagaland

DC Dimapur Order asks Purana Bazar VCC to ‘tender public apology’

DimaPur, august 28 (mExN): An Enquiry Committee set up by the Government of Nagaland has found “no substantial evidence” to implicate Solomon Awomi, President, East Dimapur Business Association (EDBA), and asked the Purana Bazar Village Council Chairman to “tender public apology” for lodging “false allegations” against EBDA and Awomi. This was stated in an Order from the Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, N. Hushili Sema. The enquiry was conducted in connection with the issue of a “complaint against the Purana Bazar Village Council, Secretary ACAUT and EDBA.” Orders passed have been asked to be complied with and implemented with immediate effect. While the Enquiry Committee could not find any “malafide practice of the EDBA,” the EDBA has been directed to “stop collection of membership fee on a monthly basis and that, no force/threat is to be use in recruiting members to the Association.” The Committee found the Purana Bazar Village Council to have “overstepped its powers in a number of situations and has shown disrespect to the Government in general and has repeatedly ignored the directives of the District Administration.” Therefore, the Village Council “will sign an undertaking

shouldering collective responsibility and with a justification, that such incidents will not be repeated in future. Failure to comply with this order will invite action against the Purana Bazar Village Council, even to the extent of forwarding to the Government for dissolution of the Village Council.” The Order, moreover, noted that the Purana Bazar Village Council has been found to have “arbitrarily acted” by suspending the Village Council Secretary without the approval of the Government. Therefore, the Council has been directed to “process for approval of the suspension of the Village Council Secretary by the Government on grounds of misuse of funds, disloyalty and breach of Government Orders through proper channel as per provisions of the Nagaland Village and Tribal Council Act 1978, Section 17.” The Dimapur DC has ordered for the VDB Secretary “to be removed as per the provisions of the Nagaland Village Council and Tribal Act 1978, Section 16,” which states that a Government Servant can be selected as a VDB Secretary only if there are no qualified persons in the village with a minimum qualification of Class X which may however be with the approval of the Deputy Commissioner/Chairman VDB. “However, in this case, it is found that the approval of the Deputy Commissioner was not taken and it is not possible that there will not be a qualified person in Purana Bazar to hold the post of VDB Secretary,” the Order stated.

The All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) were recently conducted to fill the 56 seats (MBBS and BDS) allotted to Nagaland State—no Naga student could qualify the exam to fill any of the seats. This led Nagaland’s Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE) to conduct the Nagaland State Pre-Medical test (NSPMT) on August 9 to give students another chance. While the NSPMT did not give the best of results either, the DoTE (Common Selection Board) has now prepared a merit list for provisionally qualifying students based on a 60:40 weightage of the AIPMT and NSPMT marks respectively. Following a round of counseling on September 3, the final selection to the seats will be made. Both competitive exams have proved to be difficult for the students, leading to the Government of Nagaland coming up with the 60:40 formula. There has also been considerable confusion on part of the authority concerned on qualifying students to the given quota seats. A student from G. Rio School, Kohima, who appeared for the AIMPT on May 4, is of the view that the exam is not hard to crack if “students work hard and understand the basics.” However, some ques-

Nagaland applies 60:40 AIPMT: NSPMT formula for MBBS/BDS seats tions that were included in the test were outside the Nagaland Board of Secondary Education (NBSE) syllabus which proved to be a “bit difficult” for the students. A student from Kohima Science College who appeared for the AIMPT says that around 10 per cent of the questions were out of the Nagaland syllabus. The student, however, is of the view that the lackadaisical attitude of the Naga students is to be blamed. The State as a whole needs to take this problem as a challenge to further improve the career of the Naga students. “In no way are we less than others. Our students are investing very less hours in studies compared to other societies, and we are often involved in more social activities,” said Dr. Pewezo Khalo, who is also of the view that the students are not able to compete with others because of the poor standard of education system in Nagaland, which is not on par with the rest of the country. In the case of neighbouring state, Manipur, 241 students were selected in the merit list for 131 seats available i.e. 115

MBBS and 16 BDS (Source: Directorate of Health Services, Government of Manipur). The fault, however, does not lie with the students alone. The DoTE was both “negligent and ignorant,” stated a parent, about the criteria set by the Medical Council of India for the admission of students in India to medical schools. While only 7 states (and 6 University/medical Colleges) in India go for the AIPMT, the rest conduct their own state examinations. The DoTE remained “ignorant” of much of this, and the students thus remained ill informed about criteria or level of preparation. Even now students are not sure how to select their institution as all availability of seats is yet not known to them. The Nagaland State Government informed through a notification that it is in receipt of 22 MBBS and 8 BDS seats from various North East Regional sources. The State is still “expecting” to receive 24 MBBS and 2 BDS seats from Government of India (details available on www.dtenagaland. org.in). In line with the recent demands of the Naga Students’ Federation, parents have

asked for the “streamlining of the selection process to MBBS and other allied courses” for students in Nagaland State. Reflecting on the present education system, Dr. Khalo stated that the concerned authority need to analyse what could be factor for the failure so that such incidents do not repeat again. Self-reflection on the part of the State would also be key. Dr. Khalo suggested that parents need be involved and assess the performance of their children. Although the demand is very high for medical studies, students need to understand that it is a competitive world and that their knowledge need to be expanded and reading related journals, magazines and textbooks are a must. Often students are poorly equipped to face exams therefore, school and college authorities and teachers should provide orientation to the students before the exams. Knowledge alone cannot help in this matter, some pre-assessment tests needs to be conducted before the actual exam. Given the essentials, a crucial factor that Dr. Khalo highlighted is that parents should not force their children to study a course against their will. “Let them choose the subject of their interest. A mere degree will not help them in fulfilling their ambition in life,” he said.

Chief Minister TR Zeliang today inaugurated the office building-cum-Artefact Centre of Dolphin Club Kohima at Lower L. Khel, near Tsiera Hall, Kohima village. Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister complimented the Club for their progressive ideas, vibrant spirit of service and hard work, which he said can be seen from this building they have constructed. He was also all praise the Club for making Artefact Centre possible for the collection and preservation of various traditional items, created and manufactured by our fore-fathers. There is a danger that these artefacts may gradually disappear from our homes, and the new generation of Nagas may not be even aware of them, he said and strongly felt that these artefacts should also be preserved to give us a sense of pride and inspiration; because all these items of artefacts will demonstrate the ingenuity and great skill of the Nagas.

The survival of human beings and animals both directly as well as indirectly, depends on forests; as their basic needs in the form of food, water, and shelter are met from forest. In addition to these tangible, forest play key role in carbon sequestration, amelioration of environment and climate change. With passage of time and increasing population, biotic pressure on forest has significantly increased. In the state of Nagaland, lion’s shares (88.03 %) of forest are under the control of individual and communities and remaining 11.7 % of the forest are under the control of the Government. The Government had very limited regulatory role in management of private forest. Since time immemorial,

But unless we are also prepared to take over the construction works, it is difficult to do without these outsiders, many of whom may be even illegal immigrants from Bangladesh,” Zeliang said and advocated that self-sufficiency should be our goal, particularly in construction industry.

businEss BMW launches new X3 priced up to Rs 49.9 lakh

Philipp von Sahr, President, BMW Group India at the launch of the all-new BMW X3 in Noida.

I

am not writing this article intending to wage a war against those who stand firm on the prohibition of alcohol in the state but to make a few clarifications on some of the arguments brought out by honorable pastor Tepu Khieya as a rebut to my article, ‘The Church and Prohibition’ dated 1st August 2014. I had stated clearly in my article that the opinion aired there in the article is my personal view and not of the Church. So attacking the entire Catholic Church and making blanket statement, ‘the Catholic Church’s liberal theology’ with a warning of a sort is unjustifiable and unfair. I stand by my opinion and further place a few more arguments for my obstinate stand against prohibition. Example of Prohibition failure in the USA: To my knowledge, United States of America, one of the best law-enforcing countries in the world had declared total prohibition on alcohol brewing, sale and export. It lasted nearly 14 years from 1919 to 1933, by which they recognized the mistake and the difficulty of enforcing, and promptly repealed it by the first and only constitutional amendment. In our case, where the law enforcing authority is inexplicably weak on many counts, my question is, ‘who will bell the cat’ if the prohibition is still upheld. Are we not making another mockery of ourselves? “Those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it” says George Santayana. ‘Tamasa’/hypocrisy of Raiding liquor shops: The excise department has reiterated the need to uphold liquor prohibition Act in the state. But I have observed that the raided bottles displaced are of cheap quality. However I have also observed that better quality

God must be natured in the beauty and holiness of God. The Holy Word of God is always so particular about quality worship and passionate devotion and it is always in the interest of the Church of God to honor God truly by honoring Christ. It is through the Word that we have both access to the Father by one Spirit (Ephesians 2:18) (Emphasis added). This is what the revelations are and our affairs with it will establish us in the holy powers of it. The truth is when our acts are natured in God the steps of our ways will depict worship at its best. God always desires passion and intimacy from His Bride and it is what we must be established in. The Church is the Bride and it is by her devotion to her maker which will establish her in love, in faith, in holiness and in the Spirit. The Patriarch King David’s passion for God was so strong that he was considered as a man after God’s own heart. In his psalms David writes “My soul is consumed with longing for your laws at all times. I have chosen the way of truth; I have set my heart on your laws. Do not snatch the word of truth from my mouth, for I have put my hope in your laws. I remember your ancient laws Lord, and I find comfort in them. In the night I remember your name, O Lord and I will keep your law. At midnight I rise

in freedom, then he has to use it responsibly and diligently. I would add that if the menace of drinking is widely spread then, you and me are to be blame for it. While many have supported the status of the state as ‘dry state’ and for prohibition no one has given any valid alternatives to solve this menace from the society than putting the pressure on the government to continue the Prohibition Act. The government has miserably failed to control the inflow of spurious liquid to our state. Failure of Prohibition enforcing Personnel: The excise department is accused by the ACAUT for taking away ‘the spoil of the war’ (the raided goods). To admit the truth is very humiliating and painful but the fact is, the excise department and police personnel have failed in their responsibility miserably. I think most of our people will agree that those who drink cannot enforce prohibition effectively. Mr. Chiong has pointed that most of our cops do drink. They collect the money to allow the liquor carriers to go through the check gates without troubles. What appear in the local dailies about the great catch by the excise department appears to me as stage managed show. So the question again pops up, “Who will bell the cat - on Prohibition?” I hope it is not the job of the Reverend Pastors and Church Leaders to sit at check gates to check the vehicles? Or are we to raise an ‘Alcohol-free-church’s battalion’ to be at the check gates to carry out our command. My worry is, will the sellers say to themselves with a sarcastic smile on their face, “Barking dogs seldom bite”? In the process the plight and suffering of the common people will

continue to be the same. Educate Hazards of Alcoholism: There are different medicines used by the medical personnel to treat alcoholics, such as Disulfiram, Naltrexone injection, Campral, Revia or Antabuse, etc but medication alone does not work. The alcohol patients need to be motivated to get cured of the alcoholic sickness with a lot of support systems. Besides, we are not living in an island. Our small and dependant state is fully surrounded by states where there is no liquor prohibition. Many of our youngsters are studying and working outside Nagaland where liquor is easily available. Once they are out of this cage ‘Prohibition zone’, many of them indulge badly into drinking alcohols. It is because here at home, we have just projected alcohol as the worst evil and blindfolded them but not nurture in them a strong conviction to choose to avoid alcohol. Liberating people from within is the need of the hour and not prohibiting. Lift the ban but come out with certain programmes to create Awareness, Psycho-educate and build Support Groups from the families of those suffering with this sickness. Another thing that the church need to do at this moment is to avoid branding the alcoholics as sinners but encourage them to sick experts for help. Since alcoholism is considered as the biggest sin, the alcoholics feel awkward to seek help too. Fr. liquor is also on sale in the outlets, disguised as the mineral water shops. Besides, the salesmen in these outlets are mostly non-locals and yet they have no much worry even if taken to the jail because they won’t be in it for long, for there are people to bail them out in a day or two. Besides, when the raid is on invariably the shutters of those shops will be down and will be opened just after raiders have left the place with a glee in their face. Recently there was a gathering of people in our commercial city of Dimapur, near City Tower Junction, reaffirming and seeking support for upholding the prohibition. As the crowd dispersed, usual shops started to open their shutters to sell out the water bottles wrapped in black plastic bags. Shall we call it ‘tamasa’? Hypocrisy? Human being created in Freedom: There are different types of addictions in our society, viz., money making, corruption, greed, insincerity, bribery, etc, They are all equally or even more harmful than that of addiction to alcohol. Hardly anyone is exempted from some of these, even among those church leaders who hold high their heads speaking for Prohibition. It seems to me that we are hammering too much on Prohibition, neglecting the plank in our own eyes. The slogans against alcoholism are so strong that sometimes I wonder even if Jesus were to come to Nagaland to change the water into wine, our church leaders might strongly oppose his coming too. I read from the local dailies the mighty pressure that the church leaders are putting on the government. God created human being in freedom with intelligence and the will power and not as robots. We need to remember that if God has created human persons

to give thanks for your righteous laws. The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold. My soul faints with longing for your salvation, but I have put my hope in your word. Your word O Lord is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. To all perfection I see a limit.; but your commands are boundless ( Psalm 119:20,30,43, 52,55, 62,72,81,89,96 ). This gives us a clear indication of what love and devotion is and of what passion and commitment is. God desires His bride to be passionate in her affair with Him. The bride who truly loves Christ will truly love Christ. It is by how much we love which determines how we love. The anointing of Jesus by Mary Magdalene is a passionate example of a devote bride’s devotion to her Lover. This passionate woman in remorse of her sins wept, wetting Christ’ feet with her tears, wiping it with her hair and than she kissed it and poured the perfume on them. The Pharisee in his accusing nature said to himself “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him, and what kind of woman she is-that she is a sinner. This clearly depicts the accusing nature of sinners against sinners and it also clearly shows the passion of the woman who repented, confessed and threw herself at the feet of her

Christ to passionately love Christ in the way that is expected of her. The devotion of the Bride of Holiness will always means so much to Christ and it is by how much she loves Christ which will determine the depths of her worship, devotion and commitment to Christ. The Church of Christ writes this to promote the ways of God to all the lovers of Christ. This is a sacred invitation to all the brides and lovers who are destined for the Wedding of Holiness in the next life. The Church prays, its members cries and we speak and write in the truth to connect the hearts of everyone to Christ. God desires the devotion of His Bride to be intimate in holiness, passionate in love and to be faithful in her commitment to Christ. Think of this, embrace what we embrace and love what we love. We are the Church of Christ. (Devotion of the Bride) God is what worship is and it is only through the Spirit of Worship that we can worship Him. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of love, worship and devotion. It is the prayer of the church of Christ to see all the lovers of God down on their knees worshipping God in Spirit and in truth. God is worship.

Lover. She did what the others didn’t and as the result of her acts she gained favor with the Man she loves. (Luke 7:1-50 ). A passion as strong as this is to be desired and it is what God expects of us. The acts of her passion led to the forgiveness of her sins for she loved much. The love and devotion the Church gives to Christ is always desired by God and it is by how much the Bride loves her Husband which determines how she loves. This holy passion of Christ has to be embraced by every bride, by every Church and by everyone who calls on the name of the Lord. The stronger our love for Christ is, the hotter our passion will be. The point is this: The more we are in love with Christ, the more our tears will flow. The longing of deeper passion and intimacy will inspire and fire us up for more truths, more passions and for more holiness. In another of his Psalms, the psalmist states “My eyes fail, looking for your salvation, looking for your righteous promise ( Psalm 119:123 ). It speaks of his commitment to the truth and of his passion in holiness. This is what God desires of His bride and as we represent His passions and His desires, we must live to fulfill the desires of our Lover. The promises are great and it is for us to embrace it by living in truth and in the Spirit. God expects the Bride of

‘PMJDY will be a game changer for common man’ Our Correspondent Kohima | August 28

G. C. Pandey, General Manager, State Bank of India (SBI), Corporate Centre, Mumbai was optimistic that Pradan Mantri Jan-DhanYojana (PMJDY), which was launched today nationwide, will be a game changer for the common man as also for the banks and Nation. Pandey is currently in the state capital Kohima in connection with the launching programme of PMJDY in Nagaland, which was formally launched today by Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) speaker Chotisuh Sazo here at Hotel Japfu. “I believe that the scheme will be a game changer for the common man as also for the banks and Nation. It would enable every household in the country to have access to banking services,” Pandey said in his welcome address during the launching ceremony here this afternoon. It is envisaged that a Customer

Service Point will be made available within a reasonable distance where everybody will have access to open a bank account and execute transactions, he said adding that the Nation cannot achieve inclusive growth unless every person participates in this journey. Apart from opening bank account, there is a provision in the Scheme to issue Rupay Debit cards with an inbuilt accidental insurance cover of one lakh rupees. Going forward and based on some easy terms and conditions, the account holders will also get loan facility. In the second phase of programme, insurance and pension products will also be provided to account holders, he said. Welcoming the gathering in this mega camp to launch GOI’s ambitious project on financial inclusion in a mission mode, he said “The banks have, so far covered around 3.83 lac villages through branch and BC network and bank accounts have been opened. Under this mission, the banks will ex-

pand their network in remaining 3 lakh villages and ensure that at least one account per household is opened during next one year.” There could be families without a bank account even in villages which are already covered, such families will also be covered in this mission, Pandey said Across the country, all banks – nationalised as also private sector banks, are holding over 50,000 camps for opening accounts. In Nagaland state alone, more than 150 camps are being held today, he said adding that banks are also engaged in providing financial literacy at grassroots level. “The enabling environment has been set in place and we are confident that all those who have not opened account earlier, would come forward to open their accounts. Our branches and BC outlets (Bank Mitras) are committed to ensure 100% financial inclusion,” he said and sought the support of one and all to achieve this goal.

well publicized rally against ‘social evils’ was held recently in the commercial hub of Dimapur, jointly organized by The Watchman, Naga Council Dimapur, Churches, Bible colleges and some Christian organizations. The rally has rightly raised some social concerns, although the use of the terminology ‘evil’ may be interpreted by some as dehumanization, the “denial of humanness to others”. And according to media reports, the rally focused most of the attention on the ‘evils’ of alcohol, prostitution, abortion and condemning such practices. While the resolve of the rally to call for the continuance and enforcement of the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLPT) Act 1989 is well taken, it appears that the rally did not inspire the trust and confidence of the masses in general. Usually public rallies in Dimapur are quite large with medium to heavy turnout. In this case, media report suggests that the rally “witnessed thin attendance” confined mainly to students from schools and theological colleges. So despite the sincere and well meaning effort of the organizers, why did the public rally not strike a chord with the masses? It will be interesting to find out why the fight against ‘social evils’ such as alcohol, prostitution or abortion is not awakening the people to come out to the streets. Is it because the Church is intolerant of sins or too quick to judge the ‘evil’ doer and in the process unwilling to show empathy to those who may have fallen. For instance, the reports about involvement of Naga girls in the flesh trade is a matter of reality that needs to be addressed in a more transparent and enlightened manner without taking to stigmatization or plain moral posturing. Mention may be made here that as per a recent study which was sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), human trafficking—mostly women and girls—in the northeast is being fuelled by a toxic combination of economic deprivation and conflict situation. So you see, we need to first address some of the concerns like conflict, poverty, unemployment and the lack of livelihood options and economic growth. Welfare measures for the economic upliftment of vulnerable groups is already an integral part of government run programmes but what is needed is honest implementation. The Church must also look beyond the pulpit and actively engage in livelihood programmes for the vulnerable in society. One of the protest banners during the recent rally had this to say: “I hunger not for food but for change”. This message perhaps sums up the unsympathetic attitude that is taught as Naga theology and could explain the divide between the Church and the masses. The much admired American writer and novelist Pearl S. Buck whose parents were missionaries is quoted as saying that “a hungry man can’t see right or wrong. He just sees food”. Similarly, South African social rights activist and retired Anglican bishop Desmond Tutu reminds us that “when people were hungry, Jesus didn’t say, now is that political, or social? But said I feed you”. Because according to Desmond Tutu “the good news to a hungry person is bread”. Our approach to addressing social problems will have to take into consideration the question of justice—social, political and economic. And for a Just and humane Naga society, where there is fair distribution of the fruits of development, the Church must also speak out loud and act against the culture of corruption prevalent in our midst. Social media users shy away from opinions

P

eople on Facebook and Twitter say they are less likely to share their opinions on hot-button issues, even when they are offline, according to a surprising new survey by the Pew Research Center. The study, done in conjunction with Rutgers University in New Jersey, challenges the view of social media as a vehicle for debate by suggesting that sites like Facebook and Twitter might actually encourage self-censorship. Researchers said they detect what they call the "spiral of silence" phenomenon: Unless people know their audience agrees, they are likely to shy away from discussing anything controversial. "People do not tend to be using social media for this type of important political discussion. And if anything, it may actually be removing conversation from the public sphere," said Keith Hampton, a communications professor at Rutgers University who helped conduct the study. The survey was conducted shortly after former NSA analyst Edward Snowden acknowledged leaking classified intelligence that exposed widespread government surveillance of Americans' phone and email records. Hampton said the Snowden case provided researchers with a concrete example of a major national issue that divided Americans and dominated news coverage. Of the 1,801 adults surveyed, 86 percent said they would be willing to discuss their views about government surveillance if it came up at various in-person scenarios, such as at a public meeting, at work or at a restaurant with friends. But just 42 percent of Facebook or Twitter users said they would be willing to post online about it. What's more, the typical Facebook user — someone who logs onto the site a few times per day — was actually half as likely to discuss the Snowden case at a public meeting as a non-Facebook user. Someone who goes on Twitter a few times per day was one-quarter as likely to share opinions in the workplace compared with those who never use Twitter. Only when a person felt that their Facebook network agreed with their opinion were they twice as likely to join a site discussion on the issue, the survey found. Another finding was that social media didn't make it easier for people to share opinions they wouldn't otherwise share. Of the 14 percent of Americans unwilling to discuss the Snowden case with others in person, fewer than one-half of 1 percent were willing to discuss it on social media. Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Research Center Internet Project, said it's possible that social media actually sensitize people to different opinions. "Because they use social media, they may know more about the depth of disagreement over the issue in their wide circle of contacts," he said. "This might make them hesitant to speak up either online or offline for fear of starting an argument, offending or even losing a friend." While many people might say keeping political debate off Facebook is a matter of tact, Hampton said there is a concern that a person's fear of offending someone on social media stifles debate. "A society where people aren't able to share their opinions openly and gain from understanding alternative perspectives is a polarized society," he said.

Exposing the great 'poverty reduction' lie

T

he received wisdom comes to us from all directions: Poverty rates are declining and extreme poverty will soon be eradicated. The World Bank, the governments of wealthy countries, and - most importantly - the United Nations Millennium Campaign all agree on this narrative. Relax, they tell us. The world is getting better, thanks to the spread of free market capitalism and western aid. Development is working, and soon, one day in the very near future, poverty will be no more. It is a comforting story, but unfortunately it is just not true. Poverty is not disappearing as quickly as they say. In fact, according to some measures, poverty has been getting significantly worse. If we are to be serious about eradicating poverty, we need to cut through the sugarcoating and face up to some hard facts. False accounting The most powerful expression of the poverty reduction narrative comes from the UN's Millennium Campaign. Building on the Millennium Declaration of 2000, the Campaign's main goal has been to reduce global poverty by half by 2015 - an objective that it proudly claims to have achieved ahead of schedule. But if we look beyond the celebratory rhetoric, it becomes clear that this assertion is deeply misleading. The world's governments first pledged to end extreme poverty during the World Food Summit in Rome in 1996. They committed to reducing the number of undernourished people by half before 2015, which, given the population at the time, meant slashing the poverty headcount by 836 million. Many critics claimed that this goal was inadequate given that, with the right redistributive policies, extreme poverty could be ended much more quickly. But instead of making the goals more robust, global leaders surreptitiously diluted it. Yale professor and development watchdog Thomas Pogge points out that when the Millennium Declaration was signed, the goal was rewritten as "Millennium Developmental Goal 1" (MDG-1) and was altered to halve the proportion (as opposed to the absolute number) of the world's people living on less than a dollar a day. By shifting the focus to income levels and switching from absolute numbers to proportional ones, the target became much easier to achieve. Given the rate of population growth, the new goal was effectively reduced by 167 million. And that was just the beginning. After the UN General Assembly adopted MDG1, the goal was diluted two more times. First, they changed it from halving the proportion of impoverished people in the world to halving the proportion of impoverished people in developing countries, thus taking advantage of an even faster-growing demographic denominator. Second, they moved the baseline of analysis from 2000 back to 1990, thus retroactively including all poverty reduction accomplished by China throughout the 1990s, due in no part whatsoever to the Millennium Campaign. This statistical sleight-of-hand narrowed the target by a further 324 million. So what started as a goal to reduce the poverty headcount by 836 million has magically become only 345 million - less than half the original number. Having dramatically redefined the goal, the Millennium Campaign can claim that poverty has been halved when in fact it has not. The triumphalist narrative hailing the death of poverty rests on an illusion of deceitful accounting.

lion, an Australian economist at the World Bank, noticed that the poverty lines of a group of the world's poorest countries clustered around $1 per day. On Ravallion's recommendation, the World Bank adopted this as the first-ever International Poverty Line (IPL). But the IPL proved to be somewhat troublesome. Using this threshold, the World Bank announced in its 2000 annual report that "the absolute number of those living on $1 per day or less continues to increase. The worldwide total rose from 1.2 billion in 1987 to 1.5 billion today and, if recent trends persist, will reach 1.9 billion by 2015." This was alarming news, especially because it suggested that the free-market reforms imposed by the World Bank and the IMF on Global South countries during the 1980s and 1990s in the name of "development" were actually making things worse. This amounted to a PR nightmare for the World Bank. Not long after the report was released, however, their story changed dramatically and they announced the exact opposite news: While poverty had been increasing steadily for some two centuries, they said, the introduction of free-market policies had actually reduced the number of impoverished people by 400 million between 1981 and 2001. This new story was possible because the Bank shifted the IPL from the original $1.02 (at 1985 PPP) to $1.08 (at 1993 PPP), which, given inflation, was lower in real terms. With this tiny change - a flick of an economist's wrist - the world was magically getting better, and the Bank's PR problem was instantly averted. This new IPL is the one that the Millennium Campaign chose to adopt. The IPL was changed a second time in 2008, to $1.25 (at 2005 PPP). And once again the story improved overnight. The $1.08 IPL made it seem as though the poverty headcount had been reduced by 316 million people between 1990 and 2005. But the new IPL - even lower than the last, in real terms - inflated the number to 437 million, creating the illusion that an additional 121 million souls had been "saved" Poor numbers But there's more. Not only have the goalposts been from the jaws of debilitating poverty. Not surprisingmoved, the definition of poverty itself has been mas- ly, the Millennium Campaign adopted the new IPL, saged in a way that serves the poverty reduction narra- which allowed it to claim yet further chimerical gains. tive. he Syrian refugee crisis is one of the most imperative challenges facing the international community. According to the latest reports, more than three million Syrian people have left the country to escape brutal civil war. They have sought refuge in neighbouring states, including Lebanon, Turkey, and Jordan. And it is also widely reported that the incessant influxes of refugees are overwhelming the capacities of the receiving countries. Many media sources now highlight concerns regarding the significant burdens that these refugees might place on their hosting countries. Indeed the burden of hosting refugees, especially in developing countries, has been well documented. Given the scale of the Syrian refugee inflow, it is of course understandable that the international community focuses on the potential ‘damages’ that the receiving countries may suffer from hosting refugees. On the other hand, the current discursive scope of the Syrian refugee situation seems somewhat one-dimensional. Although they are less recognised, there are advocates who claim that refugees do make positive contributions to their host communities and countries. Some examples from our research in Uganda add empirical evidence to this positive view towards hosting refugees.

poverty lines of the 15 poorest countries, but these lines provide a poor foundation given that many are set by bureaucrats with very little data. More importantly, they tell us nothing about what poverty is like in wealthier countries. A 1990 survey in Sri Lanka found that 35 percent of the population fell under the national poverty line. But the World Bank, using the IPL, reported only 4 percent in the same year. In other words, the IPL makes poverty seem much less serious than it actually is. The present IPL theoretically reflects what $1.25 could buy in the United States in 2005. But people who live in the US know it is impossible to survive on this amount. The prospect is laughable. In fact, the US government itself calculated that in 2005 the average person needed at least $4.50 per day simply to meet minimum nutritional requirements. The same story can be told in many other countries, where a dollar a day is inadequate for human existence. In India, for example, children living just above the IPL still have a 60 percent chance of being malnourished. According to Peter Edwards of Newcastle University, if people are to achieve normal life expectancy, they need roughly double the current IPL, or a minimum of $2.50 per day. But adopting this higher standard would seriously undermine the poverty reduction narrative. An IPL of $2.50 shows a poverty headcount of around 3.1 billion, almost triple what the World Bank and the Millennium Campaign would have us believe. It also shows that poverty is getting worse, not better, with nearly 353 million more people impoverished today than in 1981. With China taken out of the equation, that number shoots up to 852 million. Some economists go further and advocate for an IPL of $5 or even $10 - the upper boundary suggested by the World Bank. At this standard, we see that some 5.1 billion people - nearly 80 percent of the world's population - are living in poverty today. And the number is rising. These more accurate parameters suggest that the story of global poverty is much worse than the spin doctored versions we are accustomed to hearing. The $1.25 threshold is absurdly low, but it remains in favour because it is the only baseline that shows any progress in the fight against poverty, and therefore justifies the present economic order. Every other line tells the opposite story. In fact, even the $1.25 line shows that, without factoring China, the poverty headcount is worsening, with 108 million people added to the ranks of the poor since 1981. All of this calls the triumphalist narrative into question. A call for change This is a pressing concern; the UN is currently negotiating the new Sustainable Development Goals that will replace the Millennium Campaign in 2015, and they are set to use the same dishonest poverty metrics as before. They will leverage the "poverty reduction" story to argue for business as usual: stick with the status quo and things will keep getting better. We need to demand more. If the Sustainable Development Goals are to have any real value, they need to begin with a more honest poverty line - at least $2.50 per day - and instate rules to preclude the kind of deceit that the World Bank and the Millennium Campaign have practised to date. Eradicating poverty in this more meaningful sense will require more than just using aid to tinker around the edges of the problem. It will require changing the rules of the global economy to make it fairer for the world's majority. Rich country governments will resist such changes with all their might. But epic problems require courageous solutions, and, with 2015 fast approaching, the moment to act is now. Dr Jason Hickel lectures at the London School of Economics and serves as an adviser to /The Rules.

work as kitchen assistants, waitresses and cleaners. They have been working with us for many years." Besides some cooking ingredients which Mustafa imports from Ethiopia, all other items are purchased from Ugandan traders or companies. Every day, he goes to local markets to buy fresh vegetables and meat. Soft drinks and beer sold at his restaurant are all delivered by local beverage companies. In addition, since the restaurant is formally registered with the city council, he pays various fees to the government, thereby increasing the revenues of the municipality. Every month, he pays 800 USD to the Ugandan landlord as rent of the restaurant. In rural refugee settlements in Uganda, refugee entrepreneurs are also benefitting the host communities. In Ugandan villages neighbouring the Kyangwali and Nakivale refugee settlements, a considerable number of refugees work as skilled farmers for local commercial farms. Several refugees also provide specific services to local people, which are not available in these remote areas. For instance, inside both settlements, some refugees are running mechanic workshops, and local villagers visit their workshops to have them fix broken bicycles, radios and mobile phones. Before the refugee

The importance of setting up an enabling environment Highlighting only negative sides of hosting refugees is misleading. As refugees in Uganda have demonstrated, refugees can generate benefits for their host communities and nations. One important caveat, however, is that their contributions largely depend on their living conditions in exile; ensuring their socioeconomic rights is particularly essential. If refugees’ rights to work and move freely are not respected in a country of asylum, the economic contributions they can make will be largely undermined. Let us return to the Syrian refugee case. At this moment, unfortunately, we see no end to the Syrian crisis in sight. This means, in turn, that these displaced Syrian people might have to make a living in exile for some time. Before reducing them to the label of ‘burden’, we must remember that the Syrian refugees were not refugees in their home town. Like many of us, they had their own professions, had been sustaining their families, and had been contributing to their country’s economy. They do have skills, talents, and capacities. The important task for the international refugee regime is to sensitise the awareness of the refugee-receiving government and communities and to help them to set up an enabling environment to best foster refugees’ economic and human resources.

Oxford, conducted a comprehensive study on economic activities of refugees living in Uganda. Uganda is known as a relatively generous country to refugees. The Ugandan government has respected refugees’ right to work and has allowed a considerable degree of freedom of movement. Many refugees are taking advantage of these auspicious conditions. According to our survey, the vast majority of these refugees are engaging in their own business to make a living, rather than depending on international aid. During our research, we came across a number of refugees who make concrete contributions to the Ugandan economy through their livelihood activities. Mustafa, an Ethiopian refugee restaurant owner, is one of them. He has been running a restaurant in Kampala, Uganda’s capital, since 2008. PERSPECTIVE NEWS ANALYSIS, FEATURE AND DISCOURSE

NAGALAND AGRICULTURE Innovation offers hope in sri Lanka's north

(In Fifty years)

dr. Supong Keitzar Director, Agriculture (Rtd.), Dimapur

N

agaland is The16th State of Indian Union. It emerged out of the Naga Hills districts of Assam and NEFA in 1963. At present, it has eleven administrative districts. The land is inhabited by 16 major tribes having each tribes has distinct dialect. Nagaland is often referred to as the land of festivals. For example, the biggest festival is Hornbill Festival – Festival of Festivals. In one way or other, the festivals are related to agricultural operations. The State has its own uniqueness in terms of social, customs, political and governance. A major strength that contemporary Naga society has inherited is the “Social Capital” that has stemmed out of traditional institutions and practices. There is strong social bonding and community spirit, and absence of caste and social discrimination. Today Nagaland since fifty years of statehood is one of the fast growing states in India. The Department also celebrated the completion of fifty years of Agriculture with the theme “Towards Food Security” during December last 2013. LAND USE PATTERN The socio-cultural context of Nagaland for instance is very unique. It has a peculiar land tenure system. The land tenure system in Nagaland is governed by customary laws and traditions, and is protected by Article 371 A of the Constitution of India. Each of the sixteen different tribes in Nagaland’s eleven districts occupies a distinct territory and has discrete customs. This distinct system has its influence over the land use pattern and farming system. Shifting cultivation (Jhum) and Terrace Rice Cultivation (TRC) and also recently Horticulture are major land use patterns. However, traditional jhum is said to be eco-invasive by many experts, yet it is still dominant land use in the state. Nevertheless, today, jhum is much more improved and eco-friendly in system because of improved practices and thereby productivity is also much higher as compared to past years. The jhum cultivation is mostly concentrated in the districts of Mokokchung, Tuensang, Wokha, Zunheboto, Kipheri,Longlen and Mon. It is characterized by the cultivation of annual crops in a contiguous area by all farm households in a village. Here in mixed cropping is practised with much crop diversified manner, which is advantage over other land use system. The second dominant land use system is Terrace Rice Cultivation (TRC). It is concentrated in the districts of Kohima and Phek, and is practised most commonly by the Angami, Chakhesang, and Pochury tribes. It is a settled cultivation, where mainly rice cultivation is done. Owing to continuous cropping, soil physical and chemical properties deteriorate and so application of external inputs such as manures and fertilizers are needed. Normally monocropping is practised here. Double cropping is often constrained by the availability of irrigation network. Alongside TRC there is yet another land use pattern known as Valley Agriculture. Some 5 per cent of Nagaland’s cultivated area is under this land use. Unlike shifting cultivation, valley agriculture is practiced throughout the hilly terrain by all the tribes both at low and high elevations. It is a sedentary form of cultivation and is complementary to jhum cultivation. It is implemented wherever the terrain permits; on flat lands between the hills and flat land along the riverbanks. The soil in the valley is fertile due to nutrients washed out from the hill slopes and hence does not require fertilizers. These lands give sustained production year after year, a great advantage of valley agriculture. Paddy yields of up to 5000 kg/ha has been recorded under valley cultivation. Double cropping is possible in this land use system, but it is often constrained by the availability of water during the dry winter months and also prevailing drought like situations, which are often experience in pre-monsoon months. With the sustained irrigation network, the productivity of land can be enhanced by two-folds. Another major land use system, which is of recent origin, is Horticulture. The Government and Non-Governmental organizations have often promoted it as a land use option, particularly for farm-

his past month, watching the news has brought me to the brink of tears more often than I would care to admit. Disturbing images plaster the headlines as the renewed escalation of conflict in the Gaza Strip has produced a death toll of over 2,016 Palestinians and 67 Israelis. Amidst appalling pictures of children buried under rubble, families running for bomb shelters, and homes destroyed, reactions full of vitriol seem far more common than those based on empathy. Scouring the media coverage of the current turmoil in Israel-Palestine, it is not long before one encounters blatant dehumanization, employing all manner of the worst victim-blaming, anti-Semitic, and Islamophobic tropes. Hateful rhetoric runs rampant, whether in statements by public officials, social media posts, or chants at protests, underscoring the vicious cycle of this region. Like me, you may have seen the videos of Sderot residents cheering as bombs were dropped on Gaza, or the scenes in France of pro-Palestinian protesters attacking Jewish shops and synagogues while shouting “Gas the Jews.” I am sick to my stomach, but sadly, unsurprised. The current round of venom and violence is not a new phenomenon, but symptomatic of a long and painful history of conflict. I’m not referring to the fallacious assumption that Israeli-Palestinian animosity dates back to Cain and Abel, but to modern traumas that still afflict the psyches of both people: Ha’Shoah (Hebrew for “catastrophe,” the Holocaust) and al-Nakba (Arabic for “catastrophe,” the expulsion of Palestinians in 1948). Both are translated as “The Catastrophe.” I realize I’m delving into tricky territory in attempting to relate the experiences of the Israeli and Palestinian peoples to each other, so first a word of caution. My purpose is neither to equate these traumatic events in size or scale, nor to compare levels of victimhood. Instead, I want to demonstrate how trauma has played a formative role in shaping the collective memory of, and cur-

ers reluctant to take up terracing and also gradually to shun off shifting agriculture. Horticulture can therefore, be a better approach for sustainable Hill Agriculture. Horticulture today has its own Directorate headed by one Director of Horticulture. CROPPING PATTERN Cropping pattern refers to the distribution of cultivated land among different crops grown in the state. Cropping pattern reveals the nature of agricultural operations for example the importance of food crops vis-a-vis cash crops. Cropping pattern is influenced by two major factors (a) Physical factors and (b) Economic factors. Among the physical factors, important are soil condition, nature of rainfall and climate, and economic factors are relative prices of agricultural commodities, size of the farms, system of land holding, etc. There are two major cropping seasons, namely: Kharif and Rabi. The main Kharif crops are rice, maize, sugarcane, soybean, and Rabi crops are wheat, barley, linseed, mustard, and varieties of vegetable crops. Today the State may not achieve on a commercial scale, we are able to produce to the extent of as source of livelihood. GROWTH OF AGRICULTURE Nagaland is basically a land of Agriculture with more than 80% population earning their livelihood from agricultural production. Today, Nagaland Agriculture is much more resilient than fifty years ago. The present growth rate is a little more than 6 per cent (6%), which is much higher than National growth rate. The contribution of Agricultural Sector in the State is highly significant. Rice is the staple food. It occupies about 70% of the net cropped area and constitutes about 75% of the total food grain production. Over a span of last fifty years, the State has made an impressive food-grain production from an annual food-grain production of 62,000 MT only to the present annual production capacity of 5, 89,960 MT with the productivity increase from 700 Kg to more than 2000 Kg per hectare. If we look back those mid-sixties and seventies today’s progress made is tremendous achievement. This was made possible due to priority given to agricultural sectors coupled with the use of quality seeds, farm tools and machineries, better plant protection measures and improved management practices. Besides, the introduction of centrally sponsored developmental programs especially NWDPRA, RKVY, Development of Agricultural Link roads, etc., which lead to the growth of agricultural sector in the State. As mentioned the major land use pattern is shifting cultivation. It is, however, jhum is not like yesteryears but today, it is much improved and modified in sustainable system. Most of the day to day requirements of the people are met from the crops raised by jhum cultivators. Jhum will continue with Naga people because the entire fabric of life is very intimately connected with and revolves round jhum system. It is therefore, necessary to develop eco-friendly and sustainable system through Intensification and Fallow Management. Sustainability of jhum depends mainly on forest fallow. Longer the fallow period, better it is. Fallow period is excluding the years of cultivation. Restoring the system back to sustainability depends on the length of fallow period and its management system. Today agriculture has made tremendous changed from a traditional system to technological transformation. Now the Department has vision for a competitive agriculture and economically viable and achieving towards Food Security. At the same time promote Nagaland Agriculture to commercial agriculture in a sustainable manner by extending demand driven services to farmers, and promote to transform subsistence agriculture to Organic agriculture in a sustainable manner under rain-fed situations. POLICY MATTER There is a need for change in both policy and strategies along with recent global environmental situations. Agriculture is still a way of life that is deeply interwoven with the Naga cultures and traditions which defines the very aspect of economy in the state. This clearly indicates the dependency on agriculture sector. Understanding the importance of agricultural sectors from 11th Plan onwards, and even beyond, the Department has made a major shift in its policy of subsistence level to a commercial oriented production program involving the whole farming community on the basis of

public private partnership (PPP) mode in all the commercially potential areas of the state. They shall exploit its potential to the fullest and the food-grain requirement shall be met through planned strategies through strengthening rural infrastructure for supporting faster agricultural development by way of value addition to agricultural products, setting up of agro-centres and rural markets, micro-credit facilities, developing human resources and empowerment of farmers and promoting organic culture for healthy living. Building on these background realities, Agriculture Department has made to promote a technically sound, economically viable, environmentally non-degrading and socially acceptable sustainable Agriculture development in the state using the natural resources: land, water and genetic endowment. Thus, there will be a big change in the development process following the defined policy matter of the Department. Basing on this proposition and new policy statement, the Department has already done Crop Zoning all over the state identifying the major viable commercial crops. Accordingly, the input procurement and distribution policy are being done in line with Crop Zone. To achieve the program, the Department has re-oriented the extension services and also adopts the New Extension reform in line with National system. Thus, State Agricultural Management & Extension Training Institute (SAMETI) has already established to embark various trainings at the state levels. SAMETI institution is very important for success of various programs of the state. It should be able to create good relationship with others institutions like agricultural universities for coordination and sharing the knowledge, which will reach down to the farm level. Particularly, SAMETI and ICAR institution should go hand and hand in terms of result oriented training programs. Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) formed in all eleventh districts to support the people at the grassroots in the process of production and implementation of various programs of both State and Centre. However, ATMA is not a separate institution but it is part of SAMETI only. ATMA belongs to the farming communities. It is the Soul of farmers. In this, today, ATMA is performing very well in all the districts embarking training on technical knowhow through bottom up approach. CONCLUSION When we look back those fifty years of agricultural development in the state, there is excellent transformation in Nagaland Agriculture. Specially, there is significance increase in terms of production and productivity of various crops. As mentioned earlier production and productivity were very low in those early plan periods and today, it is significantly high because of adoption of new technology. Agricultural development is a part of overall economic development process and as such it is intimately linked with all other sectors of the economy. Economists today emphasize agriculture and rural development as the end product of a nation’s development. It is against this backdrop that development in agriculture needs to be viewed. Green revolution in India had positive effect in terms of general self-sufficiency in food security but it also brought with it much bigger problems in terms of environmental degradation. Renewed scientific interest is now focused in traditional systems of agriculture, which offer ecological efficiency and sustainability. However, it does not mean that we are going back to the same old system. The main goal is sustainability. Sustainable agriculture not only demands efficient use of water and nutrients but also regulated cropping done in a manner that would contribute towards sustaining soil fertility. Application of wrong technology or inappropriate technology could spell disaster in a sense that whatever gains produced would be all short-term gains and unsustainable. Therefore, sustainable agriculture should not be at the cost of the future generations’ ability to meet its need. Thus any development agencies seeking to introduce any technology should do so in a holistic approach of conservation and development based on ecological, economic, and social and cultural considerations. A contextualization of Agriculture is essential in terms of any developmental venture based on specific soil, crop and rainfall management strategies to mitigate uncertainty of global climate change.

I

n this dust bowl of a village deep inside Sri Lanka's former conflict zone, locals will sometimes ask visitors to rub their palms on the ground and watch their skin immediately take on a dark bronze hue, proof of the fertility of the soil. Village lore in Oddusuddan, located in the Mullaitivu district, some 338 kilometers north of the capital Colombo, has it that the land is so fertile, anything will grow here. But Mashewari Vellupillai, a 53-year-old single mother, knows that rich farmland alone is not enough to ensure a viable future. Thirty years of civil war in the Northern Province, where the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were defeated by government forces in May 2009, are not easily forgotten, and five years of peace have not yet resulted in prosperity for many residents in this former battleground. Schemes to provide relief and employment opportunities for civilians and rehabilitated combatants are few and far between, and several villagers tell IPS that survival here is dependent on creative thinking to make the most of the few income generation options available. At least 30% of the population in the province derives their income from agriculture or related areas, and a 10-month-old drought is wrecking havoc on farmers who tend to focus on a single crop at a time. After taking a 50,000-rupee (US$384) financial hit following a failed harvest last year, Vellupillai has diversified the two-acre plot that surrounds her half-built house and planted everything from onions and bananas to cassava, aubergines and tobacco. In addition, she has leased out her two acres of paddy land, and hires workers intermittently to see to its harvest. Vellupilla's most profitable crop is tobacco; a single, good-quality leaf fetches about 10 rupees (0.77 dollars), giving her an income of about 10,000 rupees monthly. "I can't take a chance by depending on one source of income, I have to be sure that I have alternatives," she tells IPS, citing cases of villagers here falling victim to a buyers' market, as was the case in 2011 when most Oddusuddan residents grew aubergines and were forced to part with their yields for dirt cheap prices as buyers from Vavuniya Town, 60 kilometers south, manipulated the market. Over 400,000 people like Vellupillai have returned to the north after fleeing the last days of fighting between armed forces and the LTTE. Since then, the government has poured over three billion dollars into massive infrastructure projects in the region, including rail-links, new roads and electrification schemes. But despite such impressive figures, life in general remains hard. Poverty is rampant according to the latest government figures released for the first quarter of this year. Four of the five districts that make up the province recorded rates higher than the national figure of 6.7%. Three of them - Kilinochchi, Mannar and Mullaittivu - recorded poverty rates of 12.7%, 20.1% and 28.8% respectively, according to the latest government poverty head count released in April. Experts say this comes as no surprise, since these districts were hit hardest by the war, and are suffering the worst of its long-term impacts. Unemployment also remains above national levels. There are no official figures for full unemployment rates in the Northern Province, but in the two districts where figures are available - Kilinochchi at 9.3% and Mannar at 8.1% - they were over twice the national rate of four%. Economists working in the region feel that unemployment could be as high 30% in some parts of the province. A dearth of proper housing adds to the troubles of the north, with only 41,000 out of a required 143,000 houses being handed over to returning residents, while some 10,500 homes are still under construction. According to UN Habitat, initial funding was for 83,000 units, including those already built, but no funds are available for the remaining 60,000 homes. "Those who can make the situation work for them, or use what they have in them … will fare better," Sellamuththu Srinivasan, the additional district secretary for the Kilinochchi District, told IPS. That is precisely what Velupillai Selvarathnam, a former lorry driver from Mullaitivu, has done. Since the war's end, he rents a small vehicle and commutes between Colombo and his hometown, covering a distance of over 300 km each week to bring ready-made garments from the capital to his small shop close to the town of Puthukkudiyiruppu. "I can make a 25,000-rupee profit every month," he told IPS. That is good money, especially if it is constant in a district that is one of the poorest five in the country and where the average monthly income is less than 4,000 rupees. Selvarathnam, who has a deep scar on the side of his chest running down to his abdomen caused by a shell injury, tells IPS, "You have to do things on your own otherwise there will be no money." His next aim is to travel to India to purchase garments in bulk, so that he can cut down on costs even more. Like him, Velvarasa Sithadevi, another resident of Oddusudan has her hands full. She has to take care of a 25-year-old son who suffers from shellshock and a husband who is yet to recover from his wartime injuries. When the family received a 25,000-rupee grant from the UN Refugee Agency upon returning to their home village in 2011, Sithadevi invested the money in setting up a small shop. "We live in the back room, that is enough for us," she told IPS. Sithadevi is a good cook, and sells food products in her roadside shop. "It is a good business, especially when there are people working on roads and other construction [sites]," she stated, adding that she makes about 4,000 rupees a day. But for every single individual success story, there are thousands of others unable to break out of the suffocating cycle of poverty in the region. Public official Srinivasan said that if assistance were to increase, the overall situation would improve. That, however, is unlikely to happen any time soon. "The next option is to attract private sector investment. We are talking with companies in the south, there is some progress, but we need more companies to come in," he stressed.

Collective Memory, Collective Trauma, Collective Hatred rent divisions in, both these societies. These traumas have transcended time, and continue to have drastic ramifications today as they live on in generations that were yet to be born in the 1940s. They have become central to the national narratives of both Israelis and Palestinians, creating cultures that are assured of the primacy of their own victimhood. In order to rationalize their moral superiority in claiming their lands, both sides actively deny the other’s suffering. After all, it is easier to justify violence if you are killing a perpetrator rather than another victim. Collective memories of catastrophe are engrained in the very fiber of Israeli and Palestinian identity. In Israeli society, the Holocaust is widely remembered as the most exceptional and horrific demonstration of inhumanity, the culmination of centuries of persecution, and the justification for the creation of a Jewish state. It is the lens through which Israelis look beyond their borders, with every incoming rocket viewed as a harbinger of a renewed extermination if left unchecked. For Palestinians, the Nakba is memorialized as the tragic uprooting of over 700,000 people from historic Palestine, the paramount injustice that demands a Right of Return to their former homes, and the force catalyzing resistance in support of a Palestinian state. The Nakba does not represent a one-time event, but is re-lived as an ever-present tragedy in the dispossession, dispersion, and occupation that afflict the lives of Palestinians. Life in Gaza today is indeed a catastrophe. This remembrance of loss is intertwined with national pride, and reinforced in both societies’ collective consciousness. Palestinian refugee camps stand as constant reminders of displacement and continuing refusals to forfeit the Right of Return to their old homes. Walking through Palestinian neighborhoods, the streets

Shannon Thomas are full of references to emptied or destroyed villages and cities in the names of streets and businesses: Lubya Street and Safad Street in Yarmouk Refugee Camp in Damascus, for example, Al-Sarees Electronics and Aykirmawi Grocery in Amman. These are names kept alive in the hope of national renewal. Signaling the centrality of the Holocaust in Israeli society, the fledgling state’s Knesset passed the Yad Vashem Law in 1953, establishing both an official holiday (Yom Ha’Shoah) and museum to officially memorialize the Shoah. The Yad Vashem museum is charged with commemoration, documentation, research and education surrounding the Holocaust. In addition to the thousands of personal testimonies from the Shoah, the official establishment gives voice to the Israeli master narrative about the connection between the Shoah and Zionism, which is enshrined in the spatial arrangement of the buildings. As described by a museum tour guide, the edifice is structured so that guests walk through the dark corridors of the Holocaust, towards a light at the end of the tunnel that opens up into a beautiful plateau of Jerusalem. The design of the museum represents the State of Israel as the redemption of the Holocaust, and the safe haven that prevents future atrocities. What is not clear from the breathtaking view on the balcony of Yad Vashem is the echoing silence of the Palestinian narrative. When museum guests look out over Jerusalem, they also look out onto the obliterated village of Deir Yassin, whose Palestinian inhabitants were massacred during the 1948 War. This tragic irony is not a stand-alone occurrence, since the erasure or denial of counter narratives in this conflict is all too common. West Jerusalem’s Ya’ar HaKdoshim (Hebrew for “Martyrs’ Forest”), which

amantha Perera Inter Press service

was established in 1951 to commemorate the death of six million Jews in the Holocaust, was built over the depopulated Palestinian villages of Bayt Mashir and Suba. In similar fashion, the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s new Museum of Tolerance in Jerusalem is being constructed on top of Mamilla Cemetery, a Muslim burial site. Both the Center and the memorial forest are meant to commemorate a dark history of persecution, and emphasize that “never again” should such atrocities be committed. But perhaps one should ask, never again for whom? To recognize the Other’s suffering is to recognize the legitimacy of their claims to the land, a step that would undermine the foundations of nationalism. As a result, alternative versions of history are often sidelined or completely overwritten in a process of creating “collective amnesia.” Some Palestinians are also guilty of this willful act of forgetting, diminishing the tragedy of the Holocaust out of fear that it legitimizes the Jewish state. When Palestinian Authority Undersecretary for Planning and International Communication, Anis Al-Qaq, suggested the Holocaust’s inclusion in the national educational curriculum, his speech aroused a violent backlash. One such response came from Dr. Musa Al-Zu’but, chairman of the Education Committee of the Palestinian Legislative Council, and verged on outright Holocaust denial: “There will be no such attempt to include the history of the Holocaust in the Palestinian curriculum. … The Holocaust has been exaggerated in order to present the Jews as victims of a great crime, to justify [the claim] that Palestine is necessary as a homeland for them, and to give them the right to demand compensation…. It is better to teach the students about what is happening to our peo-

ple…We [the Palestinians] have no interest in teaching the Holocaust. If the purpose is to express sympathy, this is useless for us, since we are the ones who suffered as a result.” Not only does Al-Zu’but’s comment suggest that the Holocaust was blown out of proportion, but also that it was directly to blame for the Nakba and is inimical to the Palestinian cause. He places the two great tragedies in competition with each other, arguing that simultaneous recognition of Jewish suffering is either unwelcome or impossible. With both sides delegitimizing the core values of the other’s narratives - the very existence of the Holocaust and the Nakba - their inability to accept the mutual reality of suffering will act as a hindrance to any lasting peace. It is clear that if a sustained ceasefire were to be declared today, the physical destruction would take less time to mend than these deep psychological wounds. Generations of Palestinians and Israelis live with the collective memory of their people’s ultimate trauma - a trauma that is repeating itself over and over again in decades of ceaseless conflict. The result? Two populations raised in fear, unable to empathize with those across their borders. Instead, both sides have done their utmost to vilify their counterparts, allowing them to justify aggression against civilians in the name of targeting the “enemy.” Israeli officials swat away the UN statistic that over 70 percent of the people in Gaza killed in Operation Protective Edge are civilians, blaming Hamas for the casualties and thereby erasing the need for remorse. Statements by Hamas have lauded the capture of an IDF soldier and the murder of Israeli teens Naftali Fraenkel, Gilad Shaer, and Eyal Yifrah, making no differentiation between combatants and children. So long as all those involved in the conflict refuse to look at the harsh and twisted reality of these logics, more people will suffer, more people will die, and more people will continue to come up with excuses for why it’s all okay.

Union Railway minister’s son booked for raping actor BaNgaloRe, august 28 (IaNs): The son of Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda has been booked for rape and cheating following a complaint by Kannada film actor Maithreyi, police said Thursday. The Gowdas denied the charges, even as Bangalore police summoned Maithreyi for recording her statement. “We have booked a case against Karthik after the woman filed a complaint Wednesday... under sections 376 (rape) and 420 (cheating),” Deputy Police Commissioner T.R. Suresh told IANS. Maithreyi accused the 30-year-old Karthik Gowda of sexually abusing and cheating her by getting engaged to another woman after marrying her “secretly” June 5 in Mangalore, about 350 km from here. She made the charge Wednesday after learning about Karthik’s engagement to Rajashri alias Swathi, daughter of industrialist Nanaiah, in Kushalnagar in Kodagu district, about 230 km from here. Minister Gowda denied the charge and accused his political opponents of attempting to malign him and tarnish his family’s reputation. His son too termed the

charge baseless. According to the complaint, Karthik married Maithreyi at his house in Mangalore and promised her a public wedding after convincing his parents. “I met Karthik in Bangalore in May through a

common friend and we became close over the weeks and had an affair after he assured he will marry me,” Maithreyi said in the complaint. Sadananda Gowda, elected to the Lok Sabha

from Bangalore North, said neither he nor his wife knew about their son’s alleged secret wedding to Maithreyi. “It is a gimmick indulged by my political opponents for cheap publicity. As a case has been registered against my son, let the law take its course and justice prevail,” an upset Sadananda Gowda told reporters in Mangalore. Meanwhile, Bangalore police Thursday summoned Maithreyi for recording her statement. “We have summoned Maithreyi to record her statement. But she is not cooperating and did not report to the police station throughout the day,” circle inspector S. Raghupathy of R.T. Nagar police station told IANS. Echoing his father, Karthik Gowda told reporters in Kushalnagar that Maithreyi’s claims were false and pictures showing them together were morphed. “Someone behind her is trying to malign my father’s clean image,” he said. Police directed Maithreyi to go for a medical test at the Ambedkar Medical College for Venereal Disease Research Lab to verify her charge that Karthik sexually abused her a couple of times. “We

are waiting for the medical report. If she tests positive, we will ask Karthik to take the test to ascertain if he had a physical relationship with her,” Raghupathy said. Instead of going to the police station, Maithreyi visited a temple Thursday and spent hours in studios of local news channels, giving her version of events since she met Karthik May 8 at a coffee bar in the city through a common friend till their relationship snapped a week ago. “I request the media to help me in getting justice, as I feel cheated and betrayed by Karthik who is my husband. We have also consummated our marriage, which happened June 5 when he tied a thread with turmeric pieces (mangalasutra or thalli) in front of his family deity in his house at Mangalore though none except his car driver was present,” Maithreyi said at a press conference. Admitting that she had no legal or documentary evidence, including pictures of the informal marriage or witnesses supporting her claims, Maithreyi said Karthik promised to marry her formally in a grand way after convincing his parents.

“As I was also in love with Karthik and trusted him, I agreed to go with him wherever he took me and yielded to his requests for physical intimacy, as we both were married and were conducting as wife and husband. He even introduced me to his close friends as his wife,” Maithreyi said. Clarifying that she filed a police complaint not to blackmail the Gowda family but to get Karthik back as her husband at any cost, Maithreyi said she tried to convince his mother that they both were married but did not succeed. “Karthik stopped taking my calls and his mother told me when I met her in Bangalore Aug 11 to keep away from him as he would not marry me and that I should forget him and look for another man to marry and settle down,” the actor said. Meanwhile, Congress activists staged a protest in the city and sought Gowda’s resignation and Karthik’s arrest. As a model-turned small-time actress, Maithreyi acted in a couple of Kannada films like “Surya The Great” with Ajai Rao and “Maurya” starring Puneeth Rajkumar, son of thespian Rajkumar.

‘India Inc happy with Modi, but holding back on investment’

New DelhI, august 28 (ReuteRs): CEOs in India are optimistic that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will spur the economy, an opinion poll showed on Thursday, but most are not ready to make new investments and say there are no signs yet of improvement on the ground. Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party stormed to power nearly three months ago on promises of reviving Asia’s third-largest economy, but critics say the new premier has so far failed to unveil any sweeping reforms. Forty-six percent of the respondents in a poll of 50 chief executive officers conducted by The Economic Times newspaper said they were watching for improved economic conditions before making planned investments that would help revive growth. About one-third of the CEOs said they have already decided to increase investments, while 12 percent said they are not sure yet or do not have immediate plans to step up investments. “The difference yet to be travelled by the government between intention and action manifests itself here,” the newspaper said about the findings of the survey. On the question of how much the economic situation has changed on the ground, the poll showed only four CEOs gave Modi a rating above six on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest. Though some signs of recovery have emerged, high interest rates and inflation continue to weigh on the Indian economy, as it wades through its longest phase of sub-par growth in decades. According to a Reuters poll released on Tuesday, the economy likely grew at its fastest pace in two years between April and June. The GDP data is due on Friday. The executives also said the economy will rebound going forward, with 72% of those polled predicting annual economic growth of between 6-8% in the next three years. Almost three-quarters of the CEOs said the new government was meeting their expectations, with 18 percent saying Modi was performing better than the “most optimistic of expectations”. High hopes that Modi will deliver on his promises also boosted foreign inflows in Indian shares this year. The benchmark Sensex hit a life high of 26,674 on Thursday, heading for its seventh consecutive monthly gain. The stock market is seen rising further, the Economic Times survey showed, with more than half of the CEOs seeing the Sensex between 27,000 and 35,000 by December 2015. A public opinion poll released last week by India Today-Hansa Research showed more than 70% of Indians were satisfied with Modi’s leadership since he took office in May.

Rapes will happen so long as Court to hear matter against Sonia, Rahul on December 9 Earth exists: Trinamool legislator KolKata, august 28 (IaNs): Even as the controversy surrounding Trinamool Congress parliamentarian Tapas Paul’s ‘rape and kill’ remarks is yet to subside, a party legislator has created a row by saying “rapes will happen so long as the Earth exists”. The comments by Dipak Kumar Halder, Trinamool legislator from West Bengal’s Diamond Harbour, has created an outrage, with people demanding his suspension from the party and the assembly. “Rapes have happened earlier and rapes are happening now. So long as the Earth exists, rape will continue to happen,” Halder said Wednesday during a party meeting in his constituency in South 24 Parganas district. Halder also cast aspersions on a woman who said she was raped for seven years. “I find it astonishing that after living together for seven years, the woman is now claiming she was raped all these years. She has been milking money from him (the accused) all these years, and now when he has no more money, she is claiming rape,” Halder said. Recently, actor-turned-politician Tapas Paul had publicly exhorted to kill Marxist workers and threatened to unleash his ‘boys’ to rape their women. Halder’s comments have come in for severe criticism. Former National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Mamta Sharma sought his removal from the state assembly.

“It is very unfortunate that despite being a woman chief minister, her (Mamata Banerjee’s) leaders indulge in such kind of talks. They don’t even have a provision for punishing such a thing. I think he should be immediate removed not only from the party but from the assembly as well,” Sharma said. Echoing Mamta Sharma’s views, Communist Party of IndiaMarxist leader Brinda Karat accused the ruling Trinamool of promoting “rape culture” in Bengal. “Such a man has no right to remain in the assembly. This is a party which is promoting rape culture all over the state, which is why Bengal has become the most unsafe place for women,” Karat said. BJP Rajya Sabha member Chandan Mitra demanded police action against Halder. “What he has said is despicable. Things are really getting out of control in Bengal. The Trinamool leaders have no control over their tongue,” Mitra said in Kolkata. Halder also received flak from within his own party. “Elected representatives should think before speaking. They should keep decency in mind while speaking especially when referring to women. Considering the stage at which crime against women has reached, there is a need for all of us to stand against crime against women irrespective of party lines,” said Trinamool Lok Sabha member Sugata Bose.

New DelhI, august 28 (PtI): A Delhi court on Thursday fixed December 9 for hearing the complaint case, in which it had issued summons against Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and others, on the issue of acquisition of National Herald daily. Metropolitan Magistrate Gomati Manocha postponed the matter after the counsel appearing for Sonia Gandhi and others informed the court that Delhi High Court had stayed the criminal proceedings pending before the trial court till September 3. The complaint case in the matter was filed by BJP leader Subra-

manian Swamy. During the hearing, Swamy informed the court that he had served the summon issued against accused Sam Pitroda, who according to him is presently residing in the USA. He also told the court that the high court had stayed the proceedings before the trial court for other accused and not for Pitroda. “The stay is for other accused and not for Pitroda. I have served the summon to him,” he told the court. Senior advocate Ramesh Gupta, who appeared for Sonia, Rahul and others, countered Swamy’s submissions saying the sum-

mon has to be served through the Ministry of Home Affairs. During the hearing, the court asked Swamy, “Is there any other way to serve the summon?”. It, however, said that it will hear the arguments on this aspect on the next date of hearing. Swamy had earlier requested the court to hand over the summons issued against Pitroda to him so that he could serve it on him. In a reprieve for Sonia, Rahul and others, the high court had earlier stayed the criminal proceedings pending before the trial court against them. The Congress leaders have challenged the lower court’s

Zeman brought his acclaimed single-man play “Voices of Men”. The play - an offshoot of his love for improvisational comedy - uses humour (in a sensitive approach) and celebrity male voice impersonations (such as Kermit The Frog) to express ideas on issues of gender violence. It has been performed across the world and translated into many languages. It is now set to be translated into Telegu by a Hyderabadbased youth theatre group with “an urban Hyderabadi spin” to it. “I am mostly here trying to draw attention to the work that has already been done by Indian NGOs and mostly Indian women, to stop gender-based violence, to stop men’s violence against women,” the 48-year old said. In Kolkata, Atherton-Zeman met survivors of gender-based violence at Jeevika Development Society, a community-based NGO in West Bengal dealing with women’s rights. “I met a lot of survivors... it was absolutely horrific that some of these women are so young and they

tablished a prima facie case of cheating, misappropriation of funds and criminal breach of trust against them. Swamy had accused Sonia and Rahul Gandhi and others of conspiring to cheat and misappropriate funds by paying just Rs 50 lakh by which YI obtained the right to recover Rs 90.25 crore which the Associated Journals Limited had owed to the Congress party. The accused persons were summoned under sections 403 (dishonest misappropriation of property, 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) read with section 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC.

Saradha scam: CBI raids 22 locations in Bengal, Assam

New DelhI, august 28 (IaNs): Probing the multi-crore rupee Saradha scam, the CBI Thursday raided 22 locations in West Bengal and Assam, including the residences of two former Assam ministers and a retired police chief and the offices of Kolkata businessman Sandhir Agarwal. The searches by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took place at seven locations in Kolkata, 14 in Assam (12 in Guwahati and two in Dhubri) and one in Mumbai, including the residence of Assam’s former education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and former Assam director general of police (DGP) Shankar Baruah, an official said in New Delhi. The other residences raided in Assam included that of Congress legislator and former minister Anjan Dutta

and singer Sadananda Gogoi. In Kolkata, searches took place at the residences of former personal assistant to a Bengal minister, Bapi Karim and former IPS officer Deben Biswas, the official said. In Kolkata, CBI sleuths also searched the residence of a former East Bengal Football Club official and questioned his widow. Another club official, Debabrata Sarkar, has already been arrested. Now in CBI custody, Kolkata businessman Agarwal, accused of extorting crores of rupees from Saradha promoter and scam kingpin Sudipta Sen, was arrested Aug 24. Meanwhile, Kolkata-based entrepreneur and chairman of the now defunct Xenitis Group, Santanu Ghosh arrived at the CBI office in Kolkata for

Indian feminists, women’s rights activists inspire US educator

KolKata, august 28 (IaNs): Globe-trotting in his efforts to engage men and boys in efforts to prevent gender-based violence, an American public speaker and educator believes the US can replicate India’s innovative ways to address the problem. Ben Atherton-Zeman, a spokesperson for the NGO National Organization for Men Against Sexism, is now on his maiden India sojourn. “I think the US has a lot to learn from India. Indian feminists and Indian advocates against gender-based violence are doing so many things in innovative ways that I have only learnt in the last few days, “ Atherton-Zaman, who works as a prevention educator for rape crisis centres, domestic violence programmes and state coalitions, told IANS. “I am looking forward to bringing home those lessons that I have been privileged to share what we do with the Indian NGOs,” he said, adding he was “impressed” by the way theatre is being channeled to spread awareness in this country. On his India tour, Atherton-

summoning orders against them on a complaint of Swamy alleging cheating and misappropriation of funds in the acquisition of the daily by Young Indian(YI). The stay from the high court had come as a relief to Sonia, Rahul and others including Congress treasurer Moti Lal Vora, General Secretary Oscar Fernandes and Suman Dubey who were summoned as accused by the trial court. Pitroda is the only accused who, so far, has not moved the high court. While summoning the accused in the case, the trial court had held that Swamy has es-

were kind to share their experiences with an American stranger. So I feel I understand the problem more because of their bravery,” he said. Prior to his Kolkata visit, Atherton-Zeman was in Hyderabad where he spoke to members of the Telengana-based NGO My Choices that seeks to end domestic violence. “He was most startled by the statistics of violence in India, particularly the instances of dowry and child marriages,” Hannah Norling, an American born, raised in Hyderabad and heading the marketing and social media unit of the NGO, told IANS over the phone. “What is phenomenally most interesting about him is that he is a man who wants other men to stand up against gender atrocities. We are talking about possible collaborations when he comes back,” she added. Atherton-Zeman, an advisory board member for Britain’s White Ribbon Campaign that encourages men to take more responsibility in violence prevention, has interacted at military bases, colleges,

questioning for the second consecutive day. Ghosh along with Assambased businessman Rajesh Bajaj was interrogated by the agency Wednesday. Ghosh, said to have had several business transactions with the tainted group, was arrested in June by the Enforcement Directorate under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. A grim stalemate at war’s end in Gaza TEL AVIV, AugusT 28 (AP): The third Gaza War in six years appears to have ended in another sort of tie, with both Israel and Hamas claiming the upper hand. Their questionable achievements have come at a big price, especially to long-suffering Palestinians in Gaza. In a sense, Israel got what it wanted: Hamas stopped firing rockets in exchange for mostly vague promises and future talks. But the cost to Israel was huge: Beyond the 70 people killed — all but six of them soldiers — the economy has been set back, the tourism season destroyed, its people rattled for 50 days and its global standing pummeled by images of devastation in Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces bristling from people who sense that Hamas controlled events and could not have its grip loosened on the Gaza Strip, which it seized by force from the Palestinian Authority in 2007. Around the corner lie international investigations into war crimes allegations. Hamas is celebrating its success after surviving Israel’s far superior firepower. The Islamic militant group’s rocket fire emptied a string of Israeli border communities and disrupted Tel Aviv’s international airport. Weak a few months ago, it may emerge as more of a player in Palestinian politics, and the plight of Gazans is again atop the world’s concerns. It also paid dearly: 2,143 Palestinians were killed, including nearly 500 children and hundreds of militants. The U.N. estimates the war destroyed or severely damaged 17,200 homes and left 100,000 Palestinians homeless, with considerable swaths of Gaza in rubble. Hamas’ rocket

arsenal is much depleted and many — if not all — of its attack tunnels against Israel have been destroyed. For the moment, Israel has promised to open border crossings with Gaza to a degree, something it does intermittently anyway, and to increase access for Gaza fishermen. Hamas’ other demands are to be later discussed: an airport and seaport, prisoner releases, salaries for its thousands of civil servants and the opening of the Rafah crossing to Egypt. Israel will ask for demilitarizing Gaza. Little is likely to be resolved anytime soon. The region is unpredictable. But as it seems this cease-fire may stick, here are some preliminary lessons:

started with carefully targeted destruction of sites, but steadily escalated its strikes. It razed neighborhoods and killed top militants. This week, Israel destroyed whole apartment towers. Hamas’ fight was at first genuinely supported by Gazans desperate for an end to the embargo of the strip by Israel and Egypt — a policy largely meant to squeeze out Hamas. But in the end, probably sensing the population couldn’t take more, Hamas accepted a deal that does not differ much from the first Egyptian cease-fire proposal offered in mid-July and accepted then by Israel. The moral side of Israel’s use of devastating force will be debated and its leForce May Have gality may end up being Worked examined at The Hague, For 50 days, Hamas but the outcome sugstuck to its rockets. Gene decides alcohol addiction risk

NEw YoRk, AugusT 28 (IANs): What has alcohol addiction got to do with genes? A lot, researchers say. A study indicates that a specific signaling pathway can be associated with the risk and severity of alcohol dependence. This signaling pathway is regulated by a gene called neurofibromatosis type 1 (Nf1) which scientists found is linked with excessive drinking in mice. The new research shows Nf1 regulates gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) - a neurotransmitter that lowers anxiety and increases feelings of relaxation. The team further analysed data on human variations of the Nf1 gene from nearly 9,000 people. The results showed an association between the gene and alcohol-dependence risk and severity. “This novel study provides insights into the cellular mechanisms of alcohol dependence. “Importantly, it also offers a correlation between rodent and human data,” said Marisa Roberto, an associate professor at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) in California. While testing several behavioural models in mice, researchers found that mice with functional Nf1 genes steadily increased their ethanol intake starting after just one episode of withdrawal. Conversely, mice with a partially deleted Nf1 gene showed no increase in alcohol consumption. “A better understanding of the molecular processes involved in the transition to alcohol dependence will foster novel strategies for prevention and therapy,” added co-author Pietro Paolo Sanna, an associate professor at TSRI. The paper appeared in the journal Biological Psychiatry.

WHO: Ebola cases could eventually reach 20,000 gENEVA, AugusT 28 (AP): The Ebola outbreak in West Africa eventually could exceed 20,000 cases, more than six times as many as are now known, the World Health Organization said Thursday. A new plan by the U.N. health agency to stop Ebola also assumes that the actual number of cases in many hard-hit areas may be two to four times higher than currently reported. If that’s accurate, it suggests there could be up to 12,000 cases already. “This far outstrips any historic Ebola outbreak in numbers. The largest outbreak in the past was about 400 cases,” Dr. Bruce Aylward, WHO’s assistant directorgeneral for emergency operations, told reporters. “What we are seeing today, in contrast to previous Ebola outbreaks: multiple hotspots within these countries — not a single, remote forested area, the kind of environments that have been tackled in the past. And then not multiple hotspots within one country, but international disease.” Another new dimension, he said, is the difficulty of dealing with Ebola in large cities and broad areas. The agency published new figures saying that 1,552 people have died from the killer virus from among the 3,069 cases reported so far in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria. At least 40 percent of

the cases have been identified in the last three weeks, the U.N. health agency said, adding that “the outbreak continues to accelerate.” In Geneva, the agency released a new plan for handling that aims to stop Ebola transmission in affected countries within six to nine months and prevent it from spreading internationally. The plan calls for $489 million to be spent over the next nine months and requires 750 international workers and 12,000 national workers. The 20,000 cases figure, said Aylward, “is a scale that I think has not ever been anticipated in terms of an Ebola outbreak.” “That’s not saying we expect 20,000,” he added. “But we have got to have a system in place that we can deal with robust numbers.” Aylward said the agency is urging airlines to lift most of their restrictions about flying to Ebola-hit nations because a predictable air link is needed to help deal with the crisis. Air France on Wednesday canceled its flights to Sierra Leone. Nigerian authorities, meanwhile, said a man who contracted Ebola after coming into contact with a traveler from Liberia had evaded surveillance and infected a doctor in southern Nigeria who later died. The announcement of a sixth death in Nigeria marked the first fatality outside the commercial capital of Lagos.

JERusALEM, AugusT 28 (AP): Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s claim that Israel achieved a “great military and political” victory over Hamas in the latest round of fighting in the Gaza Strip has met with skepticism from many Israelis, according to a poll published Thursday. The poll, published in the left-leaning Haaretz newspaper, shows that 54 percent of those surveyed believe there was no clear winner the 50 days of war. The fighting killed 2,143 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to Palestinian health officials and U.N. officials. On the Israeli side, 64 soldiers, five civilians and a Thai worker were killed. The poll underscores the unease pervading Israeli society after the third round of fighting between Israel and Gazabased Islamic militants in the seven years since Hamas took

bereavement. This limited Netanyahu’s options: Removing Hamas meant invading the heart of Gaza City and potentially losing many hundreds of troops in urban warfare. There was little stomach for this in Israel, however great the outrage over Hamas and its rockets. control of the densely populated coastal strip. On the ground, calm has prevailed since the two sides agreed on Tuesday to an openended truce, settling for an ambiguous interim agreement in exchange. Hamas, though badly battered, remains in control of Gaza with part of its military arsenal intact. Israel and Egypt are to continue to control access to the blockaded coastal strip despite Hamas’ long-running demand that the border closures imposed in 2007 be lifted. A former director of Israel’s Shin Bet security service, Yuval Diskin, said the war’s results “were disappointing and were accompanied by what some have described as a sense of sourness.” “The cease-fire that was achieved with Hamas has left the Israeli public frustrated,” Diskin wrote in a commentary published in the popular Ye-

despite reservations about doing so under fire. In May, Israel could have cautiously accepted the establishment of a technocratic Palestinian “unity government” that was backed by both Hamas and the moderate Fatah group, which runs the Palestinian Authority and its autonomous enclaves in the West Bank. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said that government backed continued peace efforts even though Hamas itself may not, yet Netanyahu launched a diplomatic campaign against Abbas for aligning himself with terrorists. What followed was the killing by Hamas activists of three Jewish teens in the West Bank, an Israeli crackdown on Hamas in the territory, and the start of the violence. Now Israel seems less upset about the unity government. It would prob-

While 54 percent said there was no clear-cut winner, some 25 percent of respondents said Israel had won the war, while 16 percent believed Hamas had prevailed. The remaining 5 percent of those surveyed were undecided. The paper did not say how the survey was conducted. Later that night in a nationally televised speech, Netanyahu said that Israel had dealt Hamas “a heavy blow.” “With the implementation of the cease-fire, I can say that there is a great military and political achievement here for the State of Israel,” Netanyahu said. “Hamas was hit hard and it received not one of the demands it set forth for a ceasefire, not one.”

ably be grateful to have the Palestinian Authority back in Gaza, running at least the borders, handling the reconstruction aid projects — and in general, keeping Hamas in check. Prospects For Real Peace Remain Bleak Whatever lies ahead, the bigger Israeli-Palestinian story remains the same: A majority on both sides wants peace and accepts partition of the Holy Land into two states — but when the other side’s terms are considered, they cannot do a deal. Israel has always feared a total West Bank pullout that would leave it about 10 miles (15 kilometers) wide at its narrowest point. Jihadi advances in the face of Arab governments’ haplessness now compound that fear. There is talk in the territories of

asking the world to force Israel to accept the Palestinians’ terms — a follow-up to the U.N. General Assembly’s recognition in 2012 of a “state of Palestine” in all of Gaza, the West Bank and east Jerusalem. The Palestinians tend to describe such efforts, as well as the recent U.S.-led negotiating effort that fizzled, as “last chances” to save the “twostate solution.” When that’s off the table, their vision does not lean toward accepting a future as an occupied people. More likely is another uprising, or a push by the Palestinians for a single state over all the territory of the Holy Land, in which Arabs and Jews would be equal citizens. Israel fears the first and ferociously opposes the second, because it would bury the Zionist dream of a national home for the Jews.

China calls on Japan to break with militarism TokYo, AugusT 28 (AP): China’s government on Thursday called on Japan to “break clean with militarism” after Tokyo confirmed that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sent a note earlier this year to a ceremony honoring more than a thousand World War II-era war criminals praising their contributions. Abe sent the message to an annual ceremony April 29 at the Koyasan Buddhist temple in central Japan in his capacity as head of the ruling party, not as prime minister, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters Wednesday. “I humbly express my deepest sympathy for the martyrs ... who sacrificed their souls

to become the foundation of peace and prosperity in Japan today,” Abe wrote in his note, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press through the ceremony organizers’ office. “I hope for eternal peace and pledge to work toward a harmonious coexistence of mankind in the future.” Many Asian countries that suffered from Japanese militarism in the first half of the 20th century see honoring war criminals as a lack of remorse by Tokyo for wartime aggression. The revelation of Abe’s note could especially worsen Japan’s ties with China and South Korea, which have repeatedly criticized Abe’s views on wartime history, widely

seen as revisionist. China’s Foreign Ministry on Thursday said Japan should reflect on its invasion and make a “clean break with militarism” to rebuild relations with Asian neighbors. “We urge Japan to adhere to its commitment to reflect on the invasion and take solid action to win the trust of Asian neighbors and international community,” spokesman Qin Gang said in the statement. Tokyo’s relations with Beijing and Seoul have been badly strained since Abe prayed last December at Tokyo’s Yasukuni Shrine, which honors 2.5 million Japanese war dead, including 14 executed “Class-A” war criminals.

More than a year and a half since taking office, Abe has not been able to hold bilateral meetings with the leaders of the two countries. Abe’s message was read aloud to about 220 people who attended the April ceremony, according to Midori Nakatsuji at the organizers’ office. She said Abe sent a similar message to last year’s memorial service. The ceremony was held in front of a stone monument that honors about 1,180 Japanese war criminals, including wartime Prime Minister Hideki Tojo and the 13 other executed officials. The “Class A” criminals were convicted of crimes against peace and humanity

by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, held in Tokyo by the allied forces after the war. Suga acknowledged that Japan has accepted the tribunal’s decisions, laid out in the San Francisco Peace Treaty, as a condition for the country’s return to the international community. Abe, however, has said that those convicted by the tribunal are not considered war criminals under domestic law. Ceremony organizers said on their website that the tribunal was the victors’ “retaliation” against the losers, and that those who were executed were “wrongfully convicted” by the allies and their honor should be restored.

Mother of reporter in Syria begs for his life

MIAMI, AugusT 28 (AP): An American freelance journalist held hostage and threatened with death by Islamic militants wanted to tell the world through his writing about oppressed people in the Middle East, his mother said in a video. Steven Sotloff, 31, was last seen in August 2013 in Syria. He was threatened with death by Islamic State militants on a video released last week unless the U.S. stopped air strikes on the group in Iraq. The same video showed the beheading of fellow American journalist James Foley. In her video released Wednesday, Shirley Sotloff, who lives in the Miami area, appealed to her son’s captors to have mercy on a man sympathetic to the suffering of Muslims. “He is an honorable man and has always tried to help the weak,” she said. The new video marked the first detailed public comments the family has made since Steven Sotloff went missing. Several U.S. officials, including Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, say they have been working behind the scenes to find out more about him and try to secure his release. “This is a tragic situation and we have seen that (the Islamic State group) has no respect for human life,” Ros-Lehtinen said. At the White House, spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters he did not know whether President Barack Obama had seen Shirley Sotloff’s video, but he said the administration is “deeply engaged” in trying to gain release of all Americans held hostage in the Middle East. “She ob-

viously, as is evident from the video, feels desperate about the safety and well-being of her son, and understandably so, and that is why our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Sotloff’s family at this very difficult and trying time.” On his Twitter feed, Sotloff described himself as a “stand-up philosopher from Miami. Currently in Libya.” Before Sotloff was shown on the Islamic State video, only a few friends and family knew he had been taken hostage, said

Sotloff’s former roommate at the University of Central Florida, Emerson Lotzia. His parents didn’t want anyone to go public. Lotzia said he recently spoke to Sotloff’s father, Arthur Sotloff. “He was in the best of spirits, then he was in the worst of spirits,” said Lotzia, now a local TV sports anchor in West Palm Beach. “He told me, ‘At last I know my son is alive. But look at the situation.’ It’s killing him, and he’s trying his best to stay on an even keel.”

Just how Sotloff made his way from Florida to Middle East hotspots is not clear. But Lotzia told the UCF student newspaper, the Central Florida Future, that Sotloff was doing what he loved. “A million people could have told him what he was doing was foolish, it seemed like it to us (as) outsiders looking in, but to him it was what he loved to do and you weren’t going to stop him,” Lotzia said. “Steve said it was scary over there. It was dangerous. It wasn’t safe to be over there. He knew it. He kept going back.” According to a society notice in The Miami Herald’s archives, Sotloff graduated from Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire in May 2002 and began attending the University of Central Florida that fall. The notice says Sotloff was co-editor of the student newspaper, The Kimball Union, and received an award for student journalism. UCF spokeswoman Zenaida Gonzalez Kotala said school records show Sotloff was a student majoring in journalism from fall 2002 until fall 2004. She said the school has no record of him graduating. UCF student newspaper archives show Sotloff wrote frequently for the publication on topics ranging from presidential politics to a fire at a campus-affiliated apartment complex. More recently, Sotloff published articles from Syria, Egypt and Libya in a variety of publications, including Time.com, the World Affairs Journal and Foreign Policy. He posted links to many of them on his Twitter feed, and several focus on the plight of average people in war-torn places such as Aleppo, Syria.

SAfrica chases down 327 to beat Australia

HARARE, August 28 (AP): Former schoolmates AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis both hit centuries in a game-changing 206-run partnership as South Africa chased down 327 to beat Australia by seven wickets on Wednesday. The South Africans struck the first blow against the topranked Australians in the triangular one-day series in Zimbabwe as they powered to 328-3 and victory — and with 20 balls to spare — at Harare Sports Club. Captain De Villiers was 136 not out at the end and still striking boundaries despite struggling badly with cramp in his left leg from around halfway through his innings. De Villiers struck 11 fours and two sixes, including a scoop for maximum over backward square leg that he played almost from a sitting position. JP Duminy joined De Villiers at the end and was 33 not out, and South Africa cruised home inside 47 overs. And yet, South Africa appeared to have made a mistake by putting Australia in to bat at the start. Aaron Finch made 102, fellow opener Phil Hughes

got 51 and Bailey a powerful 66 as Australia posted an apparently formidable 3277, its second straight score of 300-plus after outclassing host Zimbabwe in the tournament opener. Finch shared partnerships of 92 with Hughes and 114 with Bailey to put Australia in good position for a second win before South Africa got its chance on the battingfriendly Harare surface. "We certainly had enough runs

on the board and created enough chances, but hats off to Faf and AB, two extraordinary innings," Australia captain Bailey said. The bowlers were almost a sideshow as the teams served up over 650 runs, but legspinner Imran Tahir had South Africa's best return with 2-45 and seamer Mitchell Starc led Australia with 2-62 — including the wicket of Du Plessis to a mistimed pull shot.

Wayne Rooney to captain England team

LONDON, August 28 (AP): Wayne Rooney was named England captain on Thursday, taking over the leadership role of an inexperienced team in a rebuilding phase following its worst-ever World Cup. "He certainly deserves it, his commitment to the cause," England coach Roy Hodgson said at Wembley. Hodgson confirmed the Manchester United player's appointment — from a small pool of potential captains — while naming the squad for England's first European Championship qualifier against Switzerland on Sept. 8 and a friendly against Norway on Wednesday. Rooney has been handed the symbolically-prestigious captaincy role following Steven Gerrard's international retirement despite a rocky relationship in the past with fans, questions about his temperament following red cards on international

duty, and facing criticism over indiscretions in his personal life. "He has that baggage with him and he will have to accept that as a further part of the pressure," Hodgson said. "It's wrong of me to read too much into the past and any misdemeanors he might have had in that time," the coach added. "In the two years he has been with me I have had no reason to question anything about him — his desire, his commitment." The 28-year-old Rooney, who also recently assumed the United captaincy, wants past issues to be forgotten as England embarks on the road to Euro 2016. "I hope that I will have the full backing of the fans," Rooney said. "I am their type of player once I am on that pitch. My only thought is to win and give everything I have got and that sharing that desire will be the way I want to captain the team." Rooney has emerged as one of Eng-

land's few leaders, growing in stature and confidence. But despite winning every major honor with Manchester United — from the Premier League to the Champions League — Rooney has never come close to collecting silverware in his 95 England appearances. Although Rooney broke his World Cup goal drought at his third competition in June, England went out in the group stage with only one point. At Euro 2016, Rooney will hoping to become only the second England captain to lift a major trophy after Booby Moore at the 1966 World Cup, but just reaching the later rounds would be a sign of progress. Qualifying for the final tournament in France shouldn't be a major challenge, with the tournament newly-expanded to 24 in the 54-nation UEFA region. The biggest test in Group E is first up at Switzerland on Sept. 8 after a friendly against Norway at Wembley Stadium.

Xabi Alonso retires from international football MADRID, August 28 (AP): Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso, one of the key figures in Spain's dominant era that included two European championships and a World Cup title, says he is retiring from international football. The 32-year-old Alonso announced the decision on Twitter on Wednesday, saying it had been "an enormous honor" to play for Spain for 11 years. The former Liverpool midfielder scored 16 goals in 114 Spain appearances. He started every game at the 2010 World Cup, helping Spain win the tournament for the first time. He was also part of the teams that won the 2008 and 2012 European Championships, and the squad that was dumped out of this year's World Cup in Brazil in the group stage. He joins Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez, another key member of those teams, in retiring from international play after Brazil.

It’s unfair to put pressure on women: Aniston on motherhood

A

ctress Jennifer Aniston says being unmarried and having no kid do not mean she has failed as a woman. The former ‘Friends’ star, 45, feels there are pressures on women to become mothers and marry at certain times in their lives, reportedly. “It is such an issue of, like, ‘Are you married yet? Are you going to have your babies yet?’ It’s just constant. It’s like, I don’t know! “I don’t have this sort of checklist of things that have to be done, and if they’re not checked, then I’ve failed some part of my feminism or my value as a woman because I haven’t birthed a child. I’ve birthed a lot of things and feel like I’ve mothered many things, and I don’t think it’s fair to put that pressure on people,” she said. When asked why people are so fascinated by her, Aniston said, “If you have an answer to that, please let me know. I don’t know!”

Hrithik Roshan to star in Step Up 6?

H

C M Y K

rithik’ s popularity in Hollywood is evident with Twilight diva Kristen Stewart claiming that she is in love with our own resident Greek god and even wants to have his kids and we hear that the lead lady of the current installation of Step Up, Briana Evigan is also quite a fan. Briana herself is known as the Scream queen for acting in many films of the horror franchise. This time, however, it’s dance she is specialising in. Twitter fans of the franchise loved the idea of having Hrithik in the 6th installment. Strategically too, this is a wise move. The franchise has always been a huge money spinner in international markets along with the US. The franchise has also always used debut talent to create stars rather than use well-known faces. Signing Hrithik would be a double whammy of dance and acting talent with good dose of desi fan following added to the mix. Well, all we can say is that we have our fingers crossed and hope to see Hrithik sizzle and showcase his moves in Hollywood... Let’s hope that Hrithik too is willing to Step Up to the challenge.

ctor Pierce Brosnan played 007 in the James Bond movies Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day. Pierce Brosnan’s latest spy thriller November Man is getting the jump at the box office with its Wednesday opening. Espionage action films are familiar turf for Brosnan, who played the iconic 007 in the James Bond movies Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day more than a decade ago. In the Relativity Media-distributed November Man, he plays an ex-CIA agent Peter Devereaux, who is lured out of retirement for a final mission to protect a key witness in a case involving Russian war crimes. That puts him at odds with the Kremlin and his former CIA protege, played by Luke Bracey, and the fun - as in gunfights, car chases and explosions - begins. Michael Finch and Karl Gajdusek wrote the screenplay for the thriller. It is based on Bill Granger’s 1997 novel ‘There are No Spies’ from his bestselling ‘November Man’ book series. Analysts and Relativity are projecting November Man will take in around $12 million in its first weekend. The film will be screened in 2,750 theaters worldwide. - thewrap.com.

Pitt and Jolie got married!

C M Y K

The couple, together for nearly a decade and engaged since 2012, said “I do” in France this past Saturday

ngelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were married Saturday in the French hamlet of Correns, a spokesman for the couple says. Jolie, 39, and Pitt, 50, wed in a small chapel in a private ceremony attended by family and friends at Provence’s Chateau Miraval. In advance of the nondenominational civil ceremony, Pitt and Jolie obtained a marriage license from a local California judge. The judge also conducted the ceremony in France. Jolie walked the aisle with her eldest sons Maddox and Pax. Zahara and Vivienne threw flower petals. Shiloh and Knox served as ring bearers, the spokesman says. Jolie and Pitt’s wedding caps years of rampant speculation on when the couple would officially tie the knot. Pitt once said that he didn’t want to marry until gay marriage was legal, but in recent years, both said they intended to. They were engaged in early 2012 after some seven years together. “It’s an exciting prospect, even though for us, we’ve gone further than that,” Pitt told The Associated Press in an interview in November 2012. “But to concretize it in that way, it actually means more to me than I thought it would. It means a lot to our kids.” They have six children together, including three they adopted: 13-year-old Maddox, from Cambodia; 10-year-old Pax, from Vietnam; and 9-year-old Zahara, from Ethiopia. The couple’s three biological children are 8-year-old Shiloh, and Knox and Vivienne, 6-year-old twins. This is the second marriage for Pitt, who wed Jennifer Aniston in 2000. They divorced in 2005. Jolie was previously married to British actor Jonny Lee Miller for three years in the late ’90s and to Billy Bob Thornton for three years before divorcing in 2003. Both Jolie and Pitt are prepping movies. Jolie’s second directorial effort, the World War II odyssey “Unbroken,” will be released in December. Pitt stars in the upcoming World War II drama “Fury,” due out Oct. 17.

Aamir Khan, Emotional & Teary-Eyed on “Difficult” Satyamev Jayate Journey

A

ctor-activist Aamir Khan needed a moment at the press conference to announce season three of his TV show Satyamev Jayate. Describing himself as “injured,” the PK star became distinctly teary-eyed, wiping his eyes on his shirt and asking for a glass of water. Aamir was speaking about how the stories of those he encountered behind-the-scenes of Satyamev Jayate had affected him. He told the assembled reporters, “On the show, you see me speak to 8 or 10 people, 12 or 15 people. But during research I hear the stories of upto 100 people. The nature of the some of the stories is such that we are unable to have them on the show.” As an example, Aamir cited a young woman who was raped and then set on fire. She spoke to the Satyamev Jayate crew from her deathbed in hospital. Aamir said, “We couldn’t show you the interview, you wouldn’t have been able to watch it. It was extremely difficult for me to see it.” At this point, Aamir’s brimming

eyes and choked up voice silenced him and the reporters for a minute that seemed like an eternity. Gulping down some water, Aamir continued, “I have seen many things that have had a deep impact on me. You feel helpless, you want to forget the show and concentrate on resolving the issue you are faced with at that moment. Emotionally, this journey has been very difficult for me.” On previous seasons of Satyamev Jayate, Aamir has been accused by some of producing tears with an eye on TRPs. It’s unlikely that his critics, those who watch the footage below, will dismiss his extremely emotional comments at the press conference as crocodile tears. Satyamev Jayate, a campaign-based show that has highlighted social issues as diverse as female foeticide and medical malpractices, has cast Aamir in the role of crusader. As the host of the show, Aamir has been invited to Parliament to present solutions to a committee on medical FDI and has earned a place on the Time 100 List.

Tendulkar backs Indian Super League Maria Sharapova rallies to MuMB AI, August 28 (AFP): Batting superstar Sachin Tendulkar on Thursday threw his weight behind the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL), saying it was the way forward to unearth football talent in the cricket-mad country. "There is a lot of sporting talent in the country, but no platform to showcase the talent. Perhaps ISL is the answer," Tendulkar said in Mumbai at the launch of the eight-city franchise-based tournament to be played in October-December. Tendulkar, who retired last year as the leading rungetter in both Test and oneday cricket, is co-owner of the Kochi franchise in the new league that has been modelled on the lines of cricket's cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL). While the 40-year-old's fame and fortune is due to his exploits on the cricket field, he said that the most important thing was for Indians to develop and nurture a love of sport. "My vision for India is sport for all. It is not about being professional but staying healthy and fit," he said. Meanwhile, Italian World Cup winner Alessandro Del Piero, 39, was set to play for Delhi Dynamos and also serve as a brand ambassador for the ISL, a source associated with the league said. "He is on board, a formal announcement will be made shortly," the source added. Del Piero, who has been playing more recently in Australia, will be the biggest star in the league that will also feature former French international David Trezeguet and ex-England goalkeeper David James.

the country's richest man Mukesh Ambani, sports management giant IMG and Rupert Murdoch's Star TV. "The Indian Super League is an initiative that aims to revolutionise football in this country," Mukesh Ambani's wife Nita, who chairs the organising committee, told The Times of India in an interview on Thursday. "We are a nation of billion-plus but today most Indian fans, including my own two sons, only talk of EPL, La Liga or the Arsenals of the world. We are hoping to build a system to nurture talent and make our own national football heroes. "We all are very excited. However, I must say that these are initial years and we are taking baby steps. The road ahead is long before we take football to its deserving place in Indian sport." Tendulkar and another recently retired cricket great Sourav Ganguly are among the celebrities who are promoting the tournament while several Bollywood stars are also fronting franchises. While most attention is on the ageing foreign stars, at least five of the starting line-up for each team must be Indian. Although some of the country's top players have agreed deals with ISL teams, national captain Sunil Chhetri is among several India internationals who have so far rejected the chance of joining the league. Although the eightmonth long I-League has suspended matches during the ISL, several owners have spoken out against the new tournament, saying it risked undermining grassroots football.

reach US Open third round

NEW YORK, August 28 (AFP): French Open champion Maria Sharapova produced a gritty, threeset victory over Alexandra Dulgheru on Wednesday to reach the third round of the US Open. The fifth-seeded Russian, one of the day's headliners along with Australian Open winner Stan Wawrinka and five-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams, kept the star-quotient up on a day that saw two-time defending women's champion Serena Williams having a day off. Sharapova, whose Roland Garros triumph was her fifth Grand Slam success, got off to a rocky start against Romania's 95thranked Dulgheru, a former top 30 player who is trying to rebuild her career after missing a year of play after right knee surgery. Sharapova was reluctant to blame the windy conditions in the cavernous Arthur Ashe Stadium court, but the blustery weather could have been a contributing factor to her 46 unforced errors. CL: Bilbao oust Napoli, Arsenal qualify again

C M Y K

BERNE, August 28 (REutERs): Athletic Bilbao took advantage of shambolic defending to beat Napoli 3-1 on Wednesday and reach the Champions League group stage for the first time in 16 years, leaving the Italians counting the cost of their premature exit. Arsenal qualified for a 17th successive season with a nervy 1-0 win at home to Besiktas and Malmo made it for the first time with a 3-0 win over Salzburg, whose participation ended in the qualifiers for the ninth time in a row. Ludogorets centre back Cosmin Moti, forced to go in goal after keeper Vladislav Stoyanov was sent off, saved two penalties as his team beat Steaua Bucharest 6-5 in a shootout to qualify for the first time. Forgotten German striker Stefan Kiessling scored twice to help Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen storm past FC Copenhagen 4-0 to complete the line-up The group stage draw, featuring only two Italian teams following Napoli's exit, will be made in Monaco on Thursday. Napoli's defensive nightmare will prove expensive as the group stage earned them around 38 million euros (50.14 million US dollar) last season in appearance fees, performance bonuses

and television rights. It will also pile pressure on coach Rafael Benitez, whose expensively-assembled side did the bare minimum expected of them last season by finishing third in Serie A and winning the Italian Cup. Held 1-1 at home last week, Napoli survived a difficult first half before taking the lead immediately after halftime when Marek Hamsik collected a headed clearance on the edge of the area and scored with a low shot into the corner.

But it all went wrong in the 61st minute when Aritz Aduriz escaped his marker at a corner to equalise. It got worse for Napoli eight minutes later when a long ball out of the Athletic defence was completely misjudged by Raul Albiol, who collided with goalkeeper Rafael Cabral, allowing Aduriz to score into an empty net Five minutes later, Unai Lopez's through ball caused more havoc in the Napoli defence and Ibai

Gomez nipped in to drill the third past Rafael and seal Atheltic's place in the group stage for the first time since 1998/99. “We took the lead, but in a few minutes we made some significant mistakes and lost control of the game," Benitez told Sport Mediaset. "We knew it could end up like this, we are all disappointed, but we have to look forward.” Arsenal squeezed past Besiktas in a tense and absorbing contest when Chile

forward Alexis Sanchez slotted home a loose ball in first-half stoppage time. Besiktas, held 0-0 in the first leg, were always menacing and a nervy Arsenal had to sweat it out after Mathieu Debuchy was sent off in the 75th minute for a second booking. "We needed to keep our nerves," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told Sky. "For us it is a weight off our shoulders because we can focus on the Premier League."
