UNC seeks ‘urgent action and intervention’ of PM

sENapati, august 30 (mExN): The United Naga Council (UNC) has called for “urgent action and intervention” from the Government of India in a memorandum to its Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. The action and intervention has been sought from the GoI to “expedite an acceptable and honourable settlement of the Indo-Naga issue.” It asked for the Government of Manipur to be “prevailed upon” by the Union “to uphold and respect the Indo-Naga cease-fire and peace process which recognises the unique history and situation of the Nagas and to immediately desist from militarisation of Naga areas.” The UNC memorandum also asked the GoI to “ensure that the GoM is not allowed to subvert the constitutional rights A mass rally organized by the UNC at Ukhrul town today saw the participation of hun- and protections of the tribals and Nagas dreds of people to protest the prolonged imposition of Sec. 144 CrPC; State security in all spheres – educational, employment, ownership of land and natural resources, forces resorted to firing that led to the death and injury of people. Kachai Village, L Somiwon, Shirui Village, Chanreiwon, Teinem Village and AS Pamshang, Ukhrul. The rally started with a series of prayers in eight different areas of Ukhrul town, with speeches by various Naga leaders, including President of UNC, L Adani. The Manipur police, commandoes and IRB reportedly started firing tear gas and rubber bullets when a large number of people tried to reach the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) ground, breaking police barricades, where the people had converged to protest the prolonged curfew in Ukhrul. Eye witnesses report that the SP of Ukhrul was present on-site, and the State

security forces reportedly kept up the firing for almost two hours. Eye witnesses reported stone pelting by some teenagers later in the day after the security forces had resorted to firing. AccordingtotheNewmai News Network (NNN), as the people started gathering to take part in the UNC rally around 10:30am in Ukhrul town, the State security force personnel positioned themselves to contain the situation, in the process of which “the trouble started.” “We have heard that more security personnel are being sent in as reinforcements,” said a resident of Ukhrul town. “For more than a month we have been constantly scared with large

guns and army camouflage all over the town—more security will mean more people being meaninglessly apprehended, and we are fed up. Why punish all people instead of looking for the culprits?” asked the resident about the government’s response (to the killing of the ADC member) in the form of a prolonged curfew that has led to mass protests. Eye witnesses who dispersed from the rally at around 2:00pm, after prayers, claim that one of the five passing gypsies of the Manipur police fired live bullets directly at the people without any provocation, with bullets piercing the chest and abdomen of two rally participants who

were standing at the gate of the TNL ground at Wino Bazar. Both died. The district administration extended no help to the injured, while people looked for doctors. The NNN reported that two Maruti Gypsy jeeps of the police were torched by the people this afternoon, and vehicles damaged. The UNC has now alerted the Naga people “to be in preparedness for any eventuality as we intensify the severance of ties with the communal Government of Manipur.” A series of simultaneous mass rallies were held today at the four Naga dominated district headquarters of Tamenglong, Senapati, Ukhrul and

development opportunities etc.” “The GoI must take forward with sincerity and seriousness the democratic process of dialogue in the tripartite talk of the GoI, GoM and UNC on the demand of the Nagas in Manipur for an alternative arrangement outside the GoM, pending settlement of the Indo-Naga issue, which has logically progressed to a stage where the GoI will institute a High Powered Committee to translate the same into a political reality,” the memo stated. Apart from the UNC, it was endorsed by the Naga Peoples’ Organisation, Maram Naga Union, Thangal Union, Mao Council, Poumai Naga Union, Senapati District Women’s Association, Senapati District Students’ Association, Naga Peoples’ Movement for Human Rights, All Naga Students’ Association Manipur and Zeliangrong Senapati Zone.

Chandel demanding from the Government of India to expedite an acceptable and honourable settlement of the Indo-Naga issue. The rallies also protested the militarisation of Naga areas, particularly Ukhrul district, by Government of Manipur in “utter disrespect” of the IndoNaga cease-fire. The Ukhrul district administration had announced on August 29 that rallies and sit-in protests were “prohibited” owing to the imposition of CrPC 144 in Ukhrul town. “The firing that caused killings and injuries at Ukhrul yet again on this day has therefore proven that force and violence is the only response of the communal

Government of Manipur to the Nagas and also the very purpose for not revoking the 144 CrPC and the militarisation in spite of the protests of the people,” stated the UNC in a press release today. “We respect democratic principles and hold that the will of the people must be respected. But it has now been laid upon us by the GoM with no option but to engage with it headlong in defence of our people and their lives.” Meanwhile, a meeting is underway in Imphal convened by the Manipur State Government with the chief minister, State home minister, State police chief, the chief secretary and other top police officers in connection with the situation.

Hidden agenda behind disqualification of MLAs: BJP Assam and Nagaland states Dimapur, august 30 (mExN): The BJP Nagaland unit has alleged that a few NCP office bearers along with some “vested third party had vowed to disqualify” the three BJP MLAs which clearly depicted “some hidden agenda” amongst them. An emergency meeting of the Nagaland BJP State Unit expressed strong resentment on the disqualification of the three BJP MLAs, namely Dr. TM Lotha, Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Imtilemba Sangtam and Mmhonlumo Kikon from the Nagaland

Legislative Assembly by the Speaker on August 25. The BJP state unit in a press note issued by its Spokesman K James Vizo has said that “no political party constitution is above the Indian constitution which is supreme” and informed that theBJPwill“seekjusticeinthe eye of the law”.Despite the action from the Speaker, the BJP said, the three members will get appropriate justice from the court of law. Terming the statement of NCP General Secretary Miathou Krose as reported in a local daily “as ill informed,” the BJP said the In-

dian constitution under the tenth schedule states that 2/3rd majority is more than sufficient for any political party to join another party and there is no further discussion regarding that act. The BJP affirmed it had welcomed the MLAs after going through the matters carefully and after the approval from the National President and therefore making such statement by the NCP at this juncture was totally uncalled for. The BJP further stated that Krose’s statement of not having grudge against his party’s former members was “just

a face saving exercise and making mockery” of the disqualified members. The BJP Nagaland also made reference to the news item which appeared in the leading local daily on August 26 issue wherein the correspondent had said that “if the disqualification of the three legislator is confirmed, the by (sic) elections would be due within six months but none of the three would be able to contest for sometime.” The BJP Nagaland State unit expressed surprise at the report of the correspondent and the comments about the three not

The Associations have been demanding review of the promotion order of an excadre officer to the post of Additional Director. A press statement appended by NSEAOA vice president Ekonthung Lotha, NSSFOF convener, Mezhü-u Hozoye, and ANSTA president Ponchulo Wanth stated that the Associations had waited for a month in compliance with the Parliamentary Secretary’s as-

surance on July 26 to re-examine the promotion order. However, the Associations have expressed dismay that “nothing has been initiated by Government so far in the case as learnt in course of discussion”

1, 2014, besides violating Department Service Rules 2002, another ex-cadre has been promoted to the rank of Additional Director vide order NO.DSE/RS/2011 Dated, Kohima the 9th June 2014. “In short, in crossviolation of all existing promotion rules of the department, the aforesaid promotion order wasissuedinfavourofan ex-cadre officer depriving many genuine cadre officers,”thestatementasserted. The three Associations have reminded their members to strictly comply with the proposed mass casual leave from September 1-3. Meanwhile, the DEOs, SDEOs, HMs & ANSTA unit/ sub-unit officials have been assigned to disseminate proper information regarding the protest to all the members concerned at the District/ SubDivisional/ School levels and ensure that it is successfully observed/ enforced under their respective jurisdictions.

NSEAOA, NSSFOF & ANSTA to protest govt’s ‘unresponsive attitude’ held with the Commissioner & Secretary on August 29. The statement mentioned that as per Department Restructuring Notification dated July 21, 2011, Annexure VI S/no 7, there is only one post of Additional Director for excadre officers and that post is their last promotion avenue. However, it alleged that in contradiction to the Restructuring Notification No. DSE/ RS/2011 and against the joint representation of the Associations submitted on April

being able to contest in the event of a bye-election. “In the first place we would like to know from the correspondent, where and which rules in the constitution of India or the Election Commission rules is it stated that the three will not be able to contest,” stated the BJP. “Failing to respond the above queries, we will be compelled to assume that it had the intention of misreporting and thereby misleading the general public for motives best known to them. Further the attempt to mislead the public is violation of journalistic ethics.”

Experimental Ebola drug heals all monkeys in study Marilynn Marchione AP Chief Medical Writer

An experimental Ebola drug healed all 18 monkeys infected with the deadly virus in a study, boosting hopes that the treatment might help fight the outbreak raging through West Africa — once more of it can be made. The monkeys were given the drug, ZMapp, three to five days after they were infected with the virus and when most were showing symptoms. That is several days later than any other experimental Ebola treatment tested so far. The drug also completely protected six other monkeys given a slightly different version of it three days after infection in a pilot test. These two studies are the first monkey tests ever done on ZMapp. It’s not known how well the drug would work in people, who can take up to 21 days to show symptoms and are not infected the way these monkeys were in a lab. Several experts said it’s not possible to estimate a window of opportunity for treating people, but that it was encouraging that the animals recovered when treated even after advanced disease developed. The study was published online Friday by the journal Nature. ZMapp had never been tested in humans before two Americans aid workers who got Ebola while working in Africa were allowed to try it. The rest of the limited supply was given to five others.

endeavour to re-build relations Morung Express News Dimapur | August 30

Assam and Nagaland have resumed in all earnestness ‘confidence building’ measures between the two. The two neighbouring states have virtually been at loggerheads over disputed borderlands for decades now, with two major upheavals occurring in 2014 alone. The disputes have claimed atleast 14 lives this year. Relations hit a low during the recent clash between people living along the Disputed Area Belt falling between Wokha and Golaghat districts prompting the governments of the two states to initiate certain mechanisms, albeit, through the intervention of the Central Government. The death toll during the clashes in the Uriamghat-Ralan areas was tipped at 11. This was preceded by the conflict in the disputed Daldali Reserve forest, which falls on the western fringes of Dimapur district bordering Assam’s Karbi-Anglong district. Here, tension began in January culminating with the Assam Police jointly carrying out a flush-out operation with the Assam Forest department in July. Three people were killed, primarily during confrontations between the Assam Police and “armed miscreants” reported to be Nagas. The Assam Police also suffered casualty with as many as five reported injured. Relations between the two states frequently marred by skirmishes, the

governments of Assam and Nagaland have now reembarked on a mission to reactivate the once discontinued goodwill dialogues initiated during the 1980’s after the Merapani conflict. “Building trust and confidence between the people of Assam and Nagaland” is at the core of the initiative, while creating room for more people-to-people contact, said Toshi Aier, Additional Chief Secretary and Finance Commissioner, Nagaland. As part of the initiative, Aier said that officials of the two state governments met in Dimapur on August 30. The meeting was in continuance of the proposals made by the Chief Ministers of Assam and Nagaland in Guwahati on August 21, Aier added. The Assam delegation was led by Syed Iftikhar Hussain, Commissioner of Upper Assam division, while Nagaland was represented by Aier. The closed-door meeting lasted around four hours. While, Aier did not elaborate, he stated that Saturday’s meeting was more of an “ice-breaking, introductory” meeting. According to Aier, such meetings will be a monthly feature with the next meeting scheduled in Jorhat. The meeting in Jorhat will also have Deputy Commissioners. He further stated that such meetings will frequently take place at all levels of government starting from the Chief Secretary to the lower rungs of the administrative set up.

The rally was by and large peaceful and no untoward incidents were reported.

AgArtAlA, August 30 (IANs): In one more sign of warming cross-border ties, Bangladesh says it is keen to supply rice to food-deficient northeastern states and can allow all its ports, in "mutual interest", to ferry goods bound for the region, a Tripura minister has said, quoting the Bangladeshi prime minister. "Madam Hasina has proposed to supply rice to Tripura and other northeastern states if required," Tripura Industries and Commerce minister Tapan Chakraborty told IANS, referring to the assurance of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The minister was a member of an Indian delegation led by Minister of State for External Affairs, General V.K. Singh (retd) that visited Bangladesh for a conclave earlier this week. In a first, a 5,000 tonnes consignment, of a total of 10,000

tonnes, of rice carried in small ships from Kakinada port in Andhra Pradesh reached Ashuganj river port in (eastern) Bangladesh via Kolkata Aug 5. From Ashuganj, 40 km from Agartala, Bangladeshi trucks have been carrying the rice since Aug 7 to FCI warehouses in Nandannagar near here. In 2012, Bangladesh had allowed India's state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) to ferry heavy machinery, turbines and cargo through Ashuganj port for the 726 MW Palatana mega power project in southern Tripura. The Indian government had spent several millions of rupees to develop the port and related infrastructure. an ever-growing demand for this cuisine. According to Ashish Chopra, the author of NE Belly, one of the first cookbooks on northeastern cuisine, the past few years have seen a dramatic change. "I have met people who have wrongly assumed that the food is unhealthy or smelly. Lots of effort is being made to change that mindset and bring this cuisine to the mainstream." The cuisine was introduced into the Delhi culinary circuit thanks to the migration of northeasterners. Little by little this picked up and suddenly from a single shop in Dilli Haat or liaison-cum-state guesthouses, there has been a spurt in the number of restaurants serving this cuisine. At one point in the recent past, one could not imagine a full-fledged Naga restaurant. Now that has changed. And not only have people in Delhi become more adventurous, but the cuisine itself is undergoing a metamorphosis or a fusion to cater to modern tastes. The Raja Burger from the Dzukou Tribal Kitchen is one such fusion food which brings in Naga elements but is prepared in a style that would give any American burger a run for its money. According to owner and head chef Karen Yepthomi, within the three years since she got into the food business, she has seen an amazing increase in the customer base, thus showing a growing demand for this cuisine. "It is true that Naga food is known to be spicy, but our whole point is to try and maintain the authenticity while at the same time catering to different palettes. So if a customer wants it hot, so be it and if not, then that is how we will cook it. And this is why it works for everyone," Yepthomi said. As for the stereotypes, one doing the rounds

is that there is nothing that the Nagas don't eat - dogs included. " That is a common assumption, but it is not true. It is not like everything that moves finds its way into our cooking pots! Yes, there are particular tribes that eat dogs and other creatures like frogs, but that is very rare and even that are slowly disappearing. I believe that people outside the North East still need some awareness. Lot more needs to be done to highlight the variety of cuisine that is available," said Lisapila Anar PRO Tourism, Government of Nagaland. Like Nagaland House, the state guest houses of each of the other northeastern states also have restaurants serving their home dishes at affordable prices. The only issues about going to one of these places could be a lack of variety in the menu and the waiting period for customers looking for a quick meal. "We have seen people come here from all over the country and the world. They are curious to know more about our food and our culture. And if they can't go all the way to the northeast to find out about it, this is a good alternative. I have come to understand that there is much one can learn about a culture through its food," said Billy of Meghalaya House. So, for those who thought of staying away from northeastern cuisine due to spice or lack of vegetarian options or any other preconceived notion, be rest assured there is ample choice for whatever taste your buds are after. And if you are extremely lucky, one item which you might not find on the menu but which is found all over the northeast is rice beer. Although it might taste like an odd variation of lassi or butter milk, for the more adventurous ones amongst us, it can really seal the deal.

Rising number of foreign tourists visiting Tripura AgArtAlA, August 30 (IANs): Tripura saw a surge in the arrival of foreign tourists in the 2013-14 financial year, registering a record growth of 97 percent over the 2012-13 fiscal, a minister said here Saturday. "During 2012-13 and 2011-12 financial years, 7,817 and 6,550 foreign tourists (respectively) had visited Tripura. In the last financial year (2013-14), number of foreign tourists visiting Tripura mounted to 15, 376," Tripura Tourism Minister Ratan Bhowmik said. He said: "Increase of arrival of foreign tourists in Tripura by a record 97 percent was due to the state's natural exquisiteness, curbing of decades old terrorism and the people's affection towards the travellers." The minister said during the current financial year (2014-15), 3,470 foreign tourists had visited the state upto May. According to Bhowmik, since April last year and up to May this year, 405,379 tourists, including 18,846 foreign travellers, visited Tripura, which has a number of tourist spots, including religious, heritage and ecological sites.

Rijiju asks Arunachal to submit report on flood damage ItANAgAr, August 30 (PtI): Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju has asked Arunachal Pradesh officials to soon submit to the Centre a detailed report of the loss of property and crops in the current flood in the state. The report would enable to form an inter-ministerial team to visit the state to see the ground reality, Rijiju told officials at Daporijo in Upper Subansiri district after conducting an aerial survey of flood-hit areas yesterday, an official communique said here. He laid stress on both short and long term disaster management systems to combat flood and related situations in the state. The union minister appealed to the Army, ITBP and SIB toassist the administration in minimising the sufferings of flood affected people and restoration of road communication, particularly in interior and border areas.

Two more die in Assam floods guwAhAtI, August 30 (IANs): Two people died Saturday as the flood situation in Assam remained unchanged with over 16 lakh people being affected in 18 districts, officials with the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) said. A total of 16, 26,304 people have been affected due to the floods while 2, 29,290 of them are still taking shelter in 512 relief camps set up by the district administrations, they said. With two deaths in Barpeta and Sivasagar districts Saturday, the death toll in the floods since Aug 18 reached 20, the officials said.

ier as surface connectivity is a key factor for the mountainous region, which is surrounded by Bangladesh, Myanmar, Bhutan and China. The only land corridor to the northeastern states from India is through Assam and West Bengal. For instance, Agartala via Guwahati is 1,650 km from Kolkata and 2,637 km from New Delhi, while the distance between Agartala and Kolkata via Bangladesh is just about 350 km. Tripura, Mizoram and a few other northeastern states have been pressing the Indian government to finalise a permanent multi-model transit route via Bangladesh to carry food, essentials and heavy machinery. "The 70-km road between southern Tripura's border town Sabroom and Chittagong sea port has to be improved to carry men and material to and from India and

‘Bangladesh seeks to supply rice to North East’

North East cuisine finds growing demand

NEw DElhI, August 28 (IANs): Be it zesty pork chops from Nagaland or a subtle “voksa rep chum” (smoked pork with mustard leaves) from Mizoram combined with some fragrant wild red rice from Manipur, dishes from northeastern India are ample enough to fill your stomach and give you much food for thought. According to Muan Tonsing, the owner of the Delhi-based Rosang Café, northeastern cuisine cannot be classified into a single category. "Most people perceive northeastern food to be momos or noodles. My aim is to change that perception. Another misconception is that our food is very spicy. Again, that varies from dish to dish and taste to taste," Tonsing said. While Manipur is known for its fish delicacies, Nagaland is better known for its bamboo and meat fare. Mizoram mainly has boiled and subtle preparations rather than the fried foods. Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh are more strongly influenced by our eastern neighbours like China. This influence can easily be seen in their version of momos and noodles, but again without much influx of spices. Tripura's cuisine is evidently influenced by the mainland and is known for its bursting masalas. Assamese food can vary but again is well known for its tangy flavours brought in by the extensive use of tomatoes and various citrus fruits Another stereotype one hears of the northeast is that it is difficult to get good vegetarian food. In reality, vegetables grown in the region are not only diverse but extremely tasty. "We get some of our vegetables all the way from there, as they are mainly organic with no pesticides added. It adds to the cost of production but when it comes to the taste, nothing beats the authentic flavour of the North East," Tonsing asserted. North East India is home to some of the most exclusive and special spices in the world including the world renowned raja mirchi or bhut jolokia (Ghost Pepper), which according to the Guinness World records is the hottest chilli in the world. It is grown mainly in Nagaland and has to be flown in from the state. Rosang' came into existence about a decade ago in the capital city and enjoys the reputation as one of the oldest restaurants serving northeastern food in Delhi. Since then, Delhi has seen multiple eateries rising up, highlighting

Bangladesh," Chakraborty said. "Tripura would be a gateway for northeastern states if access to Chittagong port was availed," the minister added. The Indian government has also undertaken a Rs.252- crore project to construct a 15-km track between Tripura's Agartala railway station and Akhaura railway junction in Bangladesh to open a new link between the two neighbours. The Indian Chamber of Commerce and the India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in association with the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, organised the conclave earlier this week. Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pankaj Saran, ministers, officials and investors from Meghalaya, Mizoram, Assam and Tripura took part in the summit.

BORDER (?) Seniority Matters Pertaining to School Education

F

ifty plus years ago Nagaland was born out of political imperative as the 16th state within the union of India, via the birthcanal of Article 371 (A) of the constitution. Nagaland as a state however appeared still-born as it had no defined shape; let us even say as a thalidomide affected baby. The western boundary (Border?) with the mother state could not be definite. The reason is due to the failure of the central government of the union of India to fulfill Art. 3 (b), (c), (d); simply because no boundary demarcation was done between Assam and Nagaland (the new state) That the state of Nagaland comprised of Naga Hills district of Assam and the district of Tuensang in North East Frontier Agency, NEFA ( now Arunachal Pradesh ) and the area is 16,597 Sq.kms (why not 16,580 sq.kms ?) as per records cannot be measured out on the ground by any measuring tape and could at best, more of guesswork then hard fact. To make the matter worse by the passage of time Assam could not reconcile to the birth of Nagaland state. At the time of carving out, Nagaland Assam consisted of 16 districts out of which there are more states formed- Meghalaya, Mizoram etc. Therefore, if Assam was meant to include all these states then the name of Assam itself is now misnomer- it should be named as ‘Ahomland’ or ‘Ahom Pradesh’ or (TAI MONGOL AHOM) Why do we mince words and remain skimpy? Between Assam and Nagaland no love is lost! There had been so many Commissions, Bodies, and even Mediators who had examined volumes and volumes of records on the boundary issue. The only result so far yielded is the mystical loopsided formation of the Disturbed Area Belt (DAB) which is BAD for Nagaland and DAB(BING) of resources from that area (below the belts) by Assam! Yes there was also an agreement in 1972 by which Nagaland withdrew all its police outposts/pickets in the DAB and Assam did not keep the agreement rather she increased

the number of Assam police posts/pickets further and further into (inside) Nagaland. The agreement also seemed to have stipulated that central government’s paramilitary forces like the CRPF,BSF, CISF and not the least Assam rifles should maintain law and order to keep peace in the area etc.etc. But the neutral forces were at the command of the Assam DGP, Dispur! How a force could be a neutral when it is commanded by one of the parties only out of two parties contesting for anything? Does it ring any logic or reason? For me, such an agreement is meant to aggravate the matter and is happening every so often! To cap it all of the issue, Assam went to the supreme court of India and filed a case for adjudicating the boundary issue. How wise this step is beyond our comprehensions. How could the most overburdened, venerated and learned judges of the apex court of the country could sit and decide on the boundary? By this very act on the part of Assam two things are very clear- one, Assam does not desire to settle the boundary and two, she does not wish the Nagaland state to survive- not to speak of growing or developing. However, by plain reasoning one picture emerges, that whatever action had been taken either by Assam or by Nagaland on the ‘border’, they are all ‘subjudiced’ from the very day the case had been filed to the day judgment is delivered by the honourable supreme court of India which might come even after 100 years! and thereby, would require to go back to status-quo-ante? Fine if this is possible. But many generations would perish in the meanwhile- all of which, because we (both parties) are all too foolhardy, greedy and devoid of good senses as human beings or ‘homo sapiens.’ Until next time we meet and confront each other at the border of the two states under one, secular, sovereign, democratic, socialistic country - INDIA. Jai Hind. God bless Nagaland and more of Assam. W. Kithan Ex- Parliamentary Secretary Kohima : Nagaland

A

mong the many issues confronting the department of School education, the use of different yardsticks by the government while dealing with the seniority issues has brought confusion in the department and its employees. While there is no conflict as per the standing rules pertaining to seniority issues, it is openly being speculated that the corrupt bureaucrats and officers dealing with such matters tend to mislead the decision makers citing wrong precedence in the past. As per the Office memorandum No.AR-5/ASSO/98(Pt) dated 9th July 2004, it is clearly stated that “the seniority of contract or ad-hoc employees will be counted from the date of regularization or absorption of such

employees and not from any other date.” This clearly means that seniority should be counted from the date of regularization (cabinet approval) and not from the date of their appointment on a contract or ad-hoc basis. Office Memorandum No. APPT-16/1/67 further states that “the period of such service thus rendered will count for increment, leave, pension and other service benefit.” As such the claims of the All Nagaland Graduate Teachers who were appointed between 1999 and 2004 is unjustifiable as the said order was in force since 8th July 1975 vide order No.AR-13/2/74. Whereas, it is the prerogative of the government to consider for regularization of those officers who have

completed the minimum years of service required for regularization, the award of retrospective benefit to those ad-hoc employees who were regularized by the department on a later date has caused seniority conflict in the entire department, especially with those who were recruited directly through NPSC or departmental recruitments. The same procedure is applied for deputation or for promotion to a higher post where seniority is counted on the date of absorption (not the date of deputation). Since all departments under government of Nagaland functions under the same rules and regulations, individuals and groups should not try to bend the rules to their convenience. And the govern-

ment should also penalize those erring officers those who try to bend the rules and notifications after seeking favors from certain groups and individuals. The department has been so entrenched in corruption and nepotism that it has the highest number of litigations in the court. Hence, to do away with unnecessary complications the government must strictly adhere on the standing rules and notifications. And the best way to solve such problem would be to send for requisition to the NPSC for recruitment of all the post of Graduate teachers and above as per government rules. While some persons spend sleepless nights for months to appear for exam, some were simply select-

ed behind the doors without facing any exams and interviews. This is a serious disincentive to those hardworking and sincere candidates. Moreover, selection through competitive exams would improve the quality of teachers, as the best brains would be absorbed in the system. With new and dynamic parliamentary secretary who is well versed with the laws and regulations, assisted by a fresh blood of commissioner and secretaries, I believe that just shall prevail such that the decisions of the new administration shall not affect the seniority of those officers selected on merit through competition. A fair decision on this matter shall also avoid messy litigations. Imkongmeren Jamir Minister Hill, Kohima.

Prohibition versus Regulation Checkmate NLTP Act 1989?

O

ver the past few weeks many have opined to pen down their views on the issue of NLTP Act. Much as I agree with many people who are for “Regulation” on the side of lifting the ban from a modern perspective; nevertheless, I’d rather stay traditionally awkward with “Prohibition” for these following reasons: First on Regulation; the ideals of Regulation are modern and professional, and it requires individual as well as collective effort to put it into effective practice. Talking about other regulations mandated in our land, it would be worth considering the NERC as an example; the Nagaland Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) was enforced in 2003, but there is still enormous power thefts happening in and around Dimapur town itself. The question of integrity does not apply anymore; with no other choice left, the department was forced to tackle power theft by monitoring manually (in the form of providing two wheelers). This is one awful example of many regulations that are implemented in Nagaland. For this kind of ineffective regulatory, I do not see any good prospect out of Liquor Regulation in Nagaland. Secondly, regulating li-

quor trade in Nagaland would not prevent alcohol abuse. The very fact of regulating a legal age (25) for drinking itself would be a disaster. How can one say, I will start drinking after reaching 25. For sure young people under 25 are considered minors, but when it comes to drinking they are not minors. Indeed young people at 17-25 are the most vulnerable ones to adopt addictive habits. Thirdly, there are opinions terming Prohibition as dreaming and Regulation as achieving, but it is gibberish; Regulating liquor trade also anticipates for co-operation, integrity, competency, infrastructures, resources, efficiency, and professionalism, but all these seemingly ideals is a far away dream too. On the other hand Prohibition looks back into the past, the realities of the family struggle today, and cautions us in repeating possible mistake tomorrow. When NLTP was enforced in 1989, there was massive abuse of drinking alcohol in Kohima and Dimapur, leading to street riots, crimes under the influence of alcohol, narrow escapes from terrible accidents, homicides, thefts and many more. Imagine tomorrow with higher rate of population, traffic congestion and multi-

ethnicity groupings, the rate of vices in Nagaland could be much higher in scale. Lastly, I argue for prohibition from an ethical perspective so there will surely be lapses from economical perspective. Obviously there is some amount of state’s revenue at loss, but if regulation of Liquor is solely aiming for boosting the state’s revenue it is a disguised factual claim; there are no brewery, no factory, very less cultivable lands for wine growing plants etc. The ineffectiveness of NLTP should not be looked upon as the failure of the government; it is a corporate failure and we need to accept that. And that does not give us any reason to revoke the law. Nagaland as a Christian state should continue to spearhead Christian ethics in the national and international level. There is no point of comparing ourselves with the other states in India, we know what works best in our land and that is prohibition. I do not undermine our society, but we have not reached the level of regulating liquor trade that would profit our people. For sure Liquor prohibition is not the final act of transforming Nagaland but it is one very important step towards it. Villo Naleo Shalom Bible Seminary

ment syndicate can sell Liquor in Nagaland? VI. Because of the NLTP Act 1989 , it gives us the privilege that any body can sell or smuggle Liquor which is considered as most exotic consumable items in Nagaland for huge profit margin ,the only problem is that which mafia groups are you affiliated for protection. VII. It is estimated nearly 15000 Naga’s and Non Naga’s are employed which can be considered as the Biggest industry run by private firms involved in these business. Even if the Government lifted the NLTP ACT 1989 the Government is not in a position to handle the license system whereby only the few God chosen will receive the license to sell the Liquor but what about thousands of poor families who survive selling Liquor , I don’t think they will obey your new Act of Liquor License system. And even if the NLTP is Lifted there will be thousands who will sell Liquor for livelihood and the Government not in a position to check those unlicensed sellers as these sellers will sell at a cheaper rate than the license party and because their God Father will protect them. In short it’s a Mafia war where by the Government liquor Bonded Ware supported by some Churches fights the Common Man Liquor retail system over Rs.1000’s crore Liquor Business annually . Hope our Present Government will not be pressurized to pass another Bill for Clean Election ACT 2014?

I. First in the history of statehood of democratic elected Government the Religious party has pressurized the Elected Government to implement Nagaland Liquor TOTAL Prohibition Act 1989.It is believed huge amount was spent from Assam side as kickback for NLTP Act to kick out some prominent Naga’s who were into it, and controlling the Liquor business in Nagaland. II. Why did the churches accepted the NLTP Act at present form , neither appealed to the Government for rectification of NLTP Act 1989 till today. Is some religious Leader , Involved in Liquor Business. Which allows the state Government to earn Revenue in terms of some few Crores from Bonded Liquor license by issuing 3 License to the highest bidder which are bided from 5 crores to 7 crores every year to second party ,whereby they are authorized to supply all kinds of Liquor to all paramilitary stationed in Nagaland. III. Why the NLTP Act says that you are permitted to sell liquor in some renowned Hotels in Nagaland. IV. Why did the Naga Moral Guardian never raided the paramilitary canteen to implement NLTP ACT. V. How could the Assam Riffles openly raid and seize the Liquor from the Nagas where as Liquor are freely available inside there Camp in Nagaland .Does it mean NLTP Act was meant only for the NAGAS in NAGALAND or only the Govern-

he Chakhesang Hoho Kohima (CHK) thoroughly investigated the victims against the 14 Aug. 2014 incident namely; Mr. Pelo Letro and Mr. Neizeko Mekrisuh and elicited the following as its official statement. The two Chakhesang boys, namely Mr. Pelo Letro and Mr. Neizeko Mekrisuh did not provoke the four assailants from Kohima village. The only reason that might have irritated the assailants when site was sought from behind by the assailants. It is not instantly giving to them for few hundreds feet due to narrow passage. The four assailants kidnapped Mr. Pelo Letro from Para Medical area, hands tight from behind and blindfolded and took him to New Secretariat area. He was bashed up at the time of interception, continued beating him inside the vehicle throughout the vehicle travel. On reaching the

secluded spot the victim heard the assailants talking that the victim should not be spared lest it would boomerang. Accordingly, he was beaten to unconsciousness in the jungle and dumped him there believing he was dead. Thus, it was a clear case of kidnapped and attempted to murder. By sheer providence of God, the victim regains semi consciousness and crawled towards a road from where luckily he was found by a traveller who lifted him and reached him to his relatives who was subsequently taken to Hospital for hospitalization. The CHK, has also verified the involvement of Mr. Kudecho Khamo, the foster guardian of the two victims who is now summoned by the Kohima Village Youth Organization (KVYO) to appear in their court on 31.08.2014. The Hoho has to state the following. When the news of the incident and kidnapping

of one of them reached Mr. Kudecho Khamo, it was his natural and bounden duty to look for them by himself or with friends. Searching for a missing boy by one or more is nothing abnormal and it should not surprise the KVYO. When the police party could not locate the kidnapped boy, Pelo Letro even after hours of arresting the three assailants, the foster guardian became impatient which was natural and nothing abnormal here too. Mr. Kudecho Khamo has legal and fundamental right in urging the police team in whose custody the three assailants were and who knew where the victim was disposed. There was sense of urgency with the guardian as the delay in location will lead the victim to succumb to injuries should he be alive. Seeing the lackadaisical attitude of the police party, the guardian ‘pushed’ the po-

lice officer as per the word of the accused Mr. Kudecho Khamo which appeared in local dailies on 20.08.14. to further urge the police officer to locate the victim without delay. In doing so, Mr. Kudecho Khamo had no ulterior motive against the individual or community. Whereas, the KVYO conveniently coined the ‘pushed’ to ‘manhandle’, this is the exaggeration of the ground reality. In all the sequence of events on 14.08.14. evening, the two victims and the foster guardian did not commit any mistake not to speak of crimes against individual, village or community. None of the actions of Mr. Kudecho Khamo warrant any irk or ill will of KVYO. In the light of the above, the CHK has decided to advice its member Mr. Kudecho Khamo not to appear the summon of the KVYO.

Purple Fusion's debut album Folk Reminiscence is fantastic! It has amazing production values, outstanding musical performances and several memorable melodies. All the Naga lyrics (Wish I could get a translation!) carry a touch of the traditional yet blend perfectly with modern jazz/pop/rock arrangements on the tracks. My favourite track on the album is the dreamy Sohi Mozho. I have always been a fan of Mhathung Odoyo's bass playing and he has validated my appreciation admirably on this album! Lamtsala Sangtam has grown tremendously as a singer in the two years that I have known her, and she changes vocal textures to perfection between songs. Temsu Kichu is a great guy to hang out with, his drumming totally holds the band together. Imsanger Lkr's incisive guitar playing and solos keep you wanting more. I have two small cribs: The Hindi lyrics on Roko sound a bit clunky as they are sung, and Lamtsala's Hindi pronunciation leaves much to be desired. The other is that the chorus sometimes sounds a bit ragged, and not all the choral harmonies work for me (Or are some just a bit off?)

REVIEWS by artist from India and abroad

Rudy Wallang- soulmate Shillong I always look forward to listening to an album of new music…something I haven’t heard before. When I first heard Purple Fusion’s debut offering, I couldn’t help but smile …. The way the band has seamlessly combined their musical folk roots with modern western styles …. I am impressed to say the least! What strikes me is the simplicity in the arrangements ...nothing over done… Beautiful singing, beautiful harmonies, simple melodies and good musicianship…I’m a real sucker for a good melody I feel that this album is going to set a new standard for music coming out of Nagaland and the North East as a whole. The album is full of really good hooks and chants that make one want to sing along… reminds me of my travels in Nagaland…. The beautiful land filled with beautiful friendly people. It definitely gets me reminiscing. There is something for everyone here … Blues, Jazz, Pop, funk. Reggae, Rock …. Besides, of course, the folk strains of the Naga people that have had my ear’s flapping joyfully. My favorite songs on the album are Sohi Mozho, Ho Lo Ha, Loving You and Nakhe Nakhe … My only criticism, if I am allowed to make one, is that I find that the vocals are a little behind in the mix. This is because I don’t understand some of the English lyrics when they’re being sung. All in all… one album full of happy, groovy songs that I can listen to anytime. Moasubong- Abiogenesis Good to hear Mathang and Lamtsala (I assume they are the main composers for the band) incorporating our rare and exotic folk tunes of Nagaland with that of Jazz, Funk, Reggae, Rock and Blues. Lamtsala, the front lady of the band has combined her singing elements of her Naga roots with modern trend and done a good job in singing the multi lingual lyrics and even taking a dig into Hindi in ‘Roko’. I couldn’t help but notice her vocal tone’s similarity with that of Shakira in most of their tracks. Naga chants and drum beats are very much visible in Purple Fusion’s ‘Folk Reminiscence’ which gives out a kaleidoscope of unexpected tones and tribal beats making and giving variety. Khyochano TcK Ngully Area Representative for Trinity College –UK Director Music Academy Kohima Aptly titled "Folk Reminiscence" this new album by Nagaland's Purple Fusion does note disappoint! The band stays true to its fusion genre and encorporates Naga folk melodies/harmonies with blues, funk, reggae

Lamtsala H Sangtam (Vocalist/Lyricist) Lamtsala H Sangtam has made a comeback to the music scene after about a gap of ten years. She is Known as one of the most dynamic and powerful live performer. She is a self thought vocalist. She has performed with some of the biggest names in the country like Rahul Ram of Indian Ocean , Rabbi shergil . Among the few folk singers from the region who has delved into folk and been successful she has made a mark in the region inspiring and motivating many youngsters to dig deep into their culture and to give the world something new and refreshing rather than just singing popular numbers to make a living. Profile of the band members

Mhathung Odyuo- Bassist Mhathung has been the long time Bass player of the Band DivineConnection (winner of MTV RockOn 2011). He has performed all over the country as well as abroad. He had been the driving force of DivineConnection composing, arranging and writing songs for the band. Having a desire to shy away from the mainstream rock and metal scene Mhathung has joined PF and is experimenting with Naga Folk music fussed with Jazz, funk, blues, raggae and rock. Mhathung won the title of Best Bassist at Yamaha Music India-Asian Beat 2008 and Hornbill Rock contest etc. He is also known as the first Indian Bassist to have an online bass tutorial on Youtube. Temsu Kichu (Drums) Temsu is one of the leading drummers from Nagaland who has played for bands such as Diatribe(winner of Hornbill National Rock 2008), Grafitti, Oleanders etc. He has won numerous awards in the state as well as outside the state.

The lush intro of ‘Longmi Khi’, as well as ‘Ho Lo Ha’ and ‘Oh Ha Lo He’ evoke the melancholy tone strongly sensed from Nagaland: A mourning and remembrance of woundings of the past, and a longing for what could be in the future. ‘Oh Ha Lo He’ also captures the urgent angst of younger Nagas, hoping for a future of reform and peace in their homeland, while ‘Roko’ speaks to the ever present tensions northerners experience in their dealings with mainland India. The one song in this collection that doesn’t quite belong is ‘Loving You’, with it’s straight-ahead jazz ballad vibe. Although the band can pull off the style well, and Sangtam’s vocals are perhaps some of the best of the album in spots, I personally would love to see Purple Fusion stay within their style of jazz-informed blues-rock that they execute so well, as it proves a strong connection with the folk song material. By far, the sonically illustrative ‘Tring Tring’ proves to be the most intriguing song of this outing. This track recognizes both the Naga people’s heritage as a headhunting culture, while at the same time being thankful to God for bringing them into the Christian culture that they are today. Along the same lines, I hope that Purple Fusion continues to incorporate elements of straight-ahead Naga folk, as with ‘Nakhe Nakhe’. Thi show the world will come to know more of the beauty of Nagaland. Sure, global listeners will appreciate the modern blues-rock grooves, and well executed modal guitar explorations, etc; but it will be the traditional sounds and stories of the Nagaland experience that will capture the hearts of global listeners. I know firsthand that it’s the many rich stories that hold Nagaland captive in my heart. Sentienla Toy Threadgill Jazz Singer- New York

and some overtones of Jazz music. The whole album is not just an arrangement of songs put together randomly but definitely displays mature musicality and originality in the arrangements. The first song, Longmi Khi, encapsulates the whole album in a way. Lamsatla's wonderful cry draws the listener in to the music and then the band takes it away with a relaxed rhythmic folk funk. I love the way the vocals stay pure to the spirit and essence of Naga folk style of singing. Too often, fusion singing becomes watered down into the genre it's mixing with, but not so with Purple Fusion. The music is refined and the vocals have the Naga "wildness" to it especially during the cries. This makes the whole album special and lives upto its title - folk reminiscence. Lamsatla is not a cookie-cut singer from a music factory. Her style is strong and refreshing. Her vocals have body, depth and likeability. She is unique, bold and unpredictable among many singers who are beginning to sound too alike in Nagaland. She can also yodel without sounding old-fashioned. Shohe Mozhii displays a tender side to her singing which I definitely loved and would love to hear more of. The music is tight and displays skill and control. The up-tempo songs had a definite rhythmic tilt to them.. regae-ish, funk-ish, blue-ish...and definitely makes the listener sway with it. The slower numbers had wonderful texture and tone ringing out and just envelopes the aural space of the listeners with refined playing and creating an atmosphere that is unique. The best thing about this album is that one can listen to it anywhere..in a car, in a room, at a lounge, on stage... and it will impact at every venue. There is a slight renaissance taking place in Nagaland in the area of creativity..and this band is taking our folk music to a broad audience.

out of my heart. As a typical Californian, I didn’t know anything about Nagaland (other than the name) before my visit. It didn’t take long to realize that the rich history and many-chaptered story of Nagaland is like an epic blockbuster film, exhausting you with experiences of pride, anger, jolts of adrenalin, fear, elation, sorrow, and everything in between. Naga band Purple Fusion continues to tell those stories by fusing traditional Naga folk songs with jazzinformed blues-rock grooves on their forthcoming album, ‘Folk Reminiscence’. One thing I noticed during my visit to Nagaland: Nagas love rock music. They can’t get enough of it! In addition, the young people also seem to joyfully embrace their heritage, with much respect being given to their ancestors and their epic tales. Purple Fusion does an excellent job of paying respect to the past, while also looking ahead to the future of their homeland. As a power trio-with-vocalist ensemble, the band is certainly proficient in their craft, and is well rehearsed. Bassist Mhathung Odyuo and drummer Temsu Kichu together provide a solid groove foundation, with Odyuo’s occasional bass solo outings keeping things interesting. Both musicians are well-versed in several playing styles that (as the band’s name implies) fuse appropriately with the songs’ thematic material in a way that is both mature and playful at the same time. The musical star of this outing is guitarist , providing both humble guitar accompaniment throughout, as well as colorful soundscapes and soaring solos. Guitarist is clearly well informed in the styles of modal bluesrock, modern jazz fusion, and reggae. The Guitarist sonic diversity that prevents this project from falling into the duldrums of being “just a blues trio”. The band is fronted by vocalist Lamtsala Sangtum, Michael Hill whose powerful vocal style evokes a vibe (to this outHe is a veteran of the Nashville country and sider anyway) that is positively tribal! Her full-tone, ‘allChristian music scenes. At present he is Worship out-volume’ manner of singing informs the listener that Director at Marin Covenant Church in San Rafael, CA this is the way these traditional songs are to be sung, with pride and abandon. Since my first introduction and visit to Nagaland in The collection of songs feature several moments 2012, I’ve not been able to get the stories of Nagaland that capture the Naga spirit.

With absolute sure footedness, Purple Fusion walks the fine lines that border various idioms of music, and the disparate line between traditional Naga music and western music. Not only do they find and draw from the common roots of multiple musical styles, they are a cohesive band that understands and assimilates each other’s strengths. They work with each other in a way that offers well thought out counterpoints and harmonic offshoots that highlight their individual voices while staying strong and seamlessly connected as a band. Lamtsa’s voice is bold and beautiful and often sounds cathartic. For example, in Ho Lo Ha she sings “....that’s what my heart’s been looking for, that’s why my spirit cries” and breaks into a beautiful strong refrain of Ho Lo Ha He that is at once intense and compact, and conveys so much emotionally and historically riding over electric rhythm guitar followed by a lyrical guitar solo and a bass solo that explores jazz sensibilities. What makes all the pieces in the album come together as a cohesive sound is that the band has found a common place where these styles meet, and where their musical voices blend in a soulful confluence. Fusion music can be a touchy proposition and has every possibility of going terribly wrong in terms of finding that common ground. Purple Fusion under the leadership of Mhathung Odyou has worked out the kinks and the album works on the strength of a band that has worked hard to smooth out the slubs in the warp and weft of such music making. The call and response singing between Lamtsa and a male chorus with the guitar hitting all the right chords (anecdotally referred to as the money chords in the music business for chords that hit just the right changes) as in Sohi Mozho is one of the many reasons why the music can draw the listener in, or perhaps the hard-hitting rap in Oh Ha Lo He. Lamtsa’s singing with its inflections, range, and power is unapologetic and convincing. Mhaseve's guitar playing (along with Imsanger on one track) can be both rock and funk while lyrical, Mhathung's bass is adventurous yet completely grounded, and Temsu's drums groove with the right balance of the sock, ride, and crash cymbals. This band knows what it wants, but importantly, knows what it’s doing.

INSPIRATIONAL STORIES, MESSAGES, POEMS & SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES

What we do now will How to counsel a Devil Worshipper? have eternal relevance

I

PART II

n the previous article we saw the common happenings and some major characteristics of a Devil worshipper in deliverance. The article ended by listing what a counselor shouldn’t do about or during deliverance. This second part will try to answer two basic questions; what a counselor should be? What a counselor should use?The deliverance of a Devil Worshipper is not every Pastors or Church leaders cup of tea. Not everyonecould do it. The disciples of Jesus failed to do it after being with Jesus for long. Of course the person was a demon possessed and not a precise Devil worshipper. The principle is still the same. Counselors should be aware and should know what they should do and say beforehand. There are four basic things that I have observed a counselor should have before and during the deliverance session. These four are not the only things needed. There can be dozens more but these four should not be missed; Preparation Preparation should be done in every sense of the word and that includes the things that were listed in the last article. You should do some homework on Satanism. You should know the why, how, what, where of Devil Worship. It takes a little work and study, that’s all. You should have the basic knowledge of how they join Devil Worship. Their symbols are also important. Because many a times their charms and spells are on tattoos or symbols in their cloths. If you can identify that, it can save a lot of time and energy in praying for them and counseling them after that. A little knowledge of the Occult is also important because all of them will have some occult influence. If you have done your homework you can easily identify why they joined and how they joined Devil Worship. You can also know what kind of a Devil worshipper they are. That way it is a whole lot easier to pray and counsel. If not, I have seen Devil worshippers playing with the ignorance of counselors using divination. You should also be prepared to see the unexpected. Prayer You don’t want to go and talk to demons without prayer. It can be fatal. You want to make you are connected with God to encounter demons. Prayer is vital in deliverance. In fact, deliverance is a kind of prayer. The classic example of the need of prayer is recorded in the book of Mark 9:29. Long story short, there was this boy who was demon possessed. The father of the boy asked the disciples to deliver the

When Jesus, the great Exorcist came, he rebuked the evil spirit and the spirit left the boy. He was completely delivered. When they went indoors the disciples asked Jesus why they could not cast out the demons. He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer…” (Mark 9:29). Prayer does two things for the counselor; first, it will help and edify him. Second, it will allow God to control the whole deliverance session. There is power in prayer. Patience Patience is such an asset, an expensive one and many couldn’t afford it. It is one of the fruit of the Spirit. It should be desired. Every believer should covet it. It is much needed when you are counseling a Devil worshipper. Patience is needed for two reasons. First, it is needed to bear all the nonsense they have to say not for minutes but sometimes for hours. They will curse you, call you a hypocrite, laugh at you, tell your past stories, and curse Jesus and God. It takes a little patience to handle that. Second, the deliverance can take longer time than you think. So it takes a little more patience. Power By power I mean two things here; power as in authority and power or presence of the Holy Spirit. You should be authoritative in dealing with demons. The spirit inside the person may tell he is Lucifer. But give no care for that. Just command them. You should know your authority as a believer than only the demons will obey your command. Secondly the power of God is so vital in it. Without the power and presence of the Holy Spirit, your experience and knowledge is waste. It won’t have

any effect on the demons inside the Devil worshipper. It is also important to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit during the deliverance. Discerning with the power of the Holy Spirit is vital. Without which they can easily deceive you. There are three things that counselors should use in their prayer for deliverance. The Name of God The Bibledirectly teaches one mode for exorcism. Jesus after his resurrection told his disciples that in His name they will drive out demons (Mark 16:17). Even during the life time of Jesus, when He sent out the seventy two out for missions, they returned amazed because even the demons submit to the name of Jesus (Luke 10:17). Paul on his missionary to Philippi cast out the spirit of divination out of a girl in the name of Jesus (Acts 16:18). Jesus gave the authority to us to cast out demons in His name, which is above every name. The Devil worshippers hate and the demons abhor the name of Jesus. Both of them cannot stand the name of Jesus. In the name of Jesus, the demons should be cast out. The Word of God Deliverance of a Devil worshipper is not as simple as you go in and cast all the demons out in one command with the name of Jesus. It normally takes more than that. One main reason is because Devil worshippers are deceived by the Devil. They are brainwashed with lies after lies about God. They hate God and they don’t want to do anything with Jesus. Jesus is their enemy. But Jesus said in John 8:32, “then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” There will be times when you have to unlock the lies that the Devil taught them. After unlocking, you have to feed them with the truth,

i.e. the word of God. Normally, a Devil worshipper will have some of full sense during deliverance. So when the Holy Spirit helps them to understand the word of God, deliverance comes easy. Now you cannot just go and read the whole Bible to them. So you need to let the Holy Spirit guide and teach you regarding which passage to used. At other times you can know from your knowledge when they say something which is contrary to the Bible. You can always correct them with the truth from the Bible. The Love of God Most teens join Devil Worship because they are rejected or unloved. They thought they are not love by parents, friends and even God. The Devil will convince them there is no such thing as love but rather it is an act of hypocrisy by humans. When you talked about the love of God, the first thing the Devil worshipper will tell you is to “shut up.”They will be mad and jealous of you when you say anything about the love of God. They won’t want to accept the fact that God is love. Most of them will have the argument that if God was loving, why then He allowed so much pain in their lives. You should pray and convince them from the word of God that God indeed loves and He wants to deliver them and forgive them. They will apparently say no initially. But I have seen dozens of Devil worshippers finally breaking down on hearing about the love and forgiveness of God. You should read passages of love and forgiveness to them. You can also sing hymns and songs that talk about the love of God. As I end this, I want to suggest a few things more. If by God’s grace Devil worshippers are delivered, it is not the end, it is a new beginning. They need more help than ever. Few things you should do: - Make sure they renounce the Devil and the Occultic practices. - Make sure they have a church where they can pray and learn the Bible. - Tell them to stay away from things and friends who are involved with Devil Worship. - Keep in touch with them because they will have the tendency to go back to Devil Worship because of Occultic powers. - Keep them protected because they will be attacked by demons and even possibly friends with whom they were together in Devil Worship. - Continue mentoring them to grow in the Lord, if you cannot, find them someone who can. They sure need a mentor. Blessings There is power in Jesus Name!

Servant hood nature of Jesus Powers of nuclear in evil hands

Yumri Taipodia hough Jesus Christ was God, He did not count Himself equal with God. He emptied Himself to take the form of a bondservant in the likeness of men. He humbled himself up to the point of death. The way He lived and served was parallel to a bondservant. He never ran for self-glorification and comfort. Even He said about Himself that the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and give His life a ransom for many. This paper bears the servant hood nature of Jesus. Old Testament The word ebed in Hebrew means ‘servant’. The prophetic voice of Isaiah reflects the concept of the servant of God and it cannot be ignored from preliminary consideration for the account (42: 1-4; 49: 3-6; 50: 5-6; 52: 13-53: 12). The ebed Yahweh of Hebrew strongly expressed the phrase ‘servant of God.’ New Testament The word doulos in Greek carries equal meaning with servant. In the New Testament the word doulos appeared 124 and douleuo 25 times. It referred to a person employed to perform certain duties for other under some one’s command. Synoptic Gospel The healing ministry of Jesus connects the works of a servant. The service to the sick people is often found to be done by the servant. So He refused to wrangle aloud so He instructed whom He healed not to make Him known. He introduced Himself as a servant who is willing to go through vicarious suffering. Jesus comes to serve and give His life a ransom for mankind. In Mark’s gospel He is often identified as servant, therefore He was found always busy.

T

John Gospel John the Baptist declared Jesus as a ‘Lamb of God’ (Jn 1: 29, 36). It is hard to compare the ‘Lamb of God’ as an equivalent title to the ‘servant of God.’ However John connected the suffering servant of Isaiah 53: 7 to Jesus. John the apostle directly referred the servant songs to Jesus (Jn 12: 38). John connected the Isaiah 53: 1 to Jesus when the people gave less response to Him in spite of signs and wonder He performed. The baptism narrative in John 1: 14 many furnish other allusions to the servant theme. Jesus is declared to be the ‘Lamb of God’ (Jn 1: 29, 36) since He is described in terms of a lamb in Isaiah 53: 7. Historical Book/Acts In Acts 3: 13, 26; 4: 27-30 it is found that the early church regard Jesus as the

servant. Jesus is twice ascribed the word as servant in Acts 3. Both verses state Him as the exalted One of God. The reference of servant can also be seen in Acts 8: 32. Paul’s Writing In Roman the similar ideas to the servant idea also occurred. Jesus is delivered for our (paredothe) trespasses and raised for our justification (Rom. 4: 25). And in Romans 8: 32 God gave his son (paredoken) for our sin. This same verb is found in Isaiah 53: 6. Beside that Paul link Jesus as the suffering servant who died for the sins of human kind (1 Cor. 15: 3). Humiliation and obedience of Jesus can be traced as some background of suffering servant (Phil. 2: 6-11). Paul maintains Jesus ministry as the servant of the Lord (Is 42: 1-9; 49: 1-6; 50: 4-11; 52: 13). Paul perceived the death of Jesus as the fulfillment of the suffering servant (Phil. 2: 7). The Pauline theology of suffering servant with the Son of Man is also implicit in Ephesians 4: 13. The trail of suffering servant for our sake which He demonstrate for our sake is found in Galatians also (Gal. 5: 22-24). In addition to that Paul tells Jesus inherent the form of God but He emptied Himself from Lordship to become the bond servant. He existed in the form of a bond servant- the slave in the fullest sense. Like the bond servant Jesus owns nothing. So on Palm Sunday He had to borrow a donkey, even lend room for the Lord Supper, and was buried in others tomb. He refused any special treatment to Himself. He testifies Himself the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve (Mt. 20: 28). So He washed the feet of His disciple. Therefore he served others more than any servant or slave ever lived. He is the model and standard for servant-hood nature. Summary Jesus, the King of kings and Lord of lords, the world have ever known, took the form of a servant and served. In word and deed He introduced Himself as the servant. He lived to serve people. Paul too follows the servant hood nature of Jesus and urges the believers to have that same attitude. Paul owned nothing and shows the exemplary life to imitate him as he followed His master. Conclusion The Lord Jesus Christ lived as a servant by showing us a model and standard for servant hood. Being as a follower of that servant, believers need to follow His footprints. For this reason readers should have servant hood nature in their life which was in Jesus Christ. As a servant Jesus did only Father’s will and served in Father’s name. As a climax of His service He bore our sins and hung on the tree. Jesus Himself won supremely the servant of the Lord.

W

e are on a countdown to crisis. A nuclear showdown with Iran is apparent. The battle for Jerusalem has begun. The war will affect every person on planet earth. John Hagee Satan had not been sleeping ever since his fall, and as the end of the era of darkness looms near, he has been desperately trying to put his final seal of authority in his own book of death. The death he died he died to himself and the torments he suffers in the future will be to his own shame. Never the less, he still desires the death of sinners, and prays for the resurrection of evil to satiate his own lust for power, death and destruction. The turn of events around the world clearly depicts the fulfillment of the written prophecies of the Word. The evil designs of satan are evidenced in the ways of the wicked. The pending crisis and controversy which resurrected from the grave was the threat of Iran to the Great Nation of Israel. This issue had been dogging every lover of God and the climax of it will not be as pleasurable as the sins of the present. On February 3, 2004, the Daily Telegraph of London Splashed the Headlines: Confession by The Father of Pakistan’s Atomic Bomb: I have sold nuclear secrets to Libya, Iran and North Korea (Abdul Qadeer Khan ). This report stated by Ahmed Rashid confirmed that the law of evil was at work but a truth I see in this is that every powerful nation of the world are at the mercy of God. The notion is this: Truth says I know what you did; while doubt says tell me what you did. The interpretation of this is that in our pursuance of truth, doubt may arise, but the moment we are perfected in the truth, the whole powers of doubt, fear and confusion will be wiped out without mercy and the pioneers of it will live in fear, doubt and confusion in hell. This is hard to understand and the contents of it will make no sense to the foolish. There will not be a greater doubt for the lovers of truth but there is a greater concern for the sinners who are void of the truth. It has been revealed that the president of Iran, Mahmoud Admadinejad announced to the world via Fox News that he intends to share Iran’s nuclear power to all Islamic nations. The acts of this psychotic sinner can be likened to the acts of a sinner who fantasizes himself being surrounded by seventy virgins in the next hell. If it is an honor for him to die for satan, it will be a tragedy for him to be with satan in hell. Just weeks after his election, the present president of Iran Admadinejad addressed a conference in Tehran entitled “ A World Without Zionism” and declared that: The occupation regime of Qods ( Jerusalem, or Israel ) must be wiped off from the map of the world, and with the help of almighty , we shall soon experience a world without America and Zionism, notwithstanding those who doubt. He continued his inflammatory comments by saying “ To those who doubt, to those who ask is it possible, or those who do not believe, I say accomplishment of a world without America and Israel is both possible and feasible. In reference to that scoundrel’s stance John Hagee stated “ Those nations who aligns with God’s purposes will receive his blessings. Those who follow a policy of opposition to God will receive the swift and severe judgment of God without limitation ( Numbers 24:9 ) ( Emphasis added ). The policy of political and military aggression sounds more feasible because of the urgency of the situation. The long prophesied prophecy of Ezekiel ( 38,39 ) is on the verge of completion. There is no doubt that the events of the future in regard to Israel will be as dramatic and as miraculous as their six day war with their five rogue neighbors. Talks of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons are now on a high and as a result of this crisis, the guns of Israel and America are now trained on the sinful nation of Iran. As the events of the world enfolds, we shall witness the truths written in the Bible and the truths of it shall shut the mouths of fools and make way for the repentant sinners to return to Christ. We don’t know what Israel’s showdown with Iran will be like, but we do foresee the annihilation of all their foes in the future. The account of the scripture states “I will summon a sword against Gog on all mountains, declares the Lord. Every man’s sword will be against his brother. I will execute judgment upon him with plague and bloodshed; I will pour down torrents of rain, hail stones and burning sulphur on him and on his troops and on the many nations with him. And so I will show my greatness and my holiness, and I will make myself known in the sight of many nations. Then they will know that I am the Lord (Ezekiel 38:21-23 ). The events of the present are just a rundown to the events of the future. Doubt makes us fear but truth makes us believe. And the ones who believes and lives by the truths till the end will experience no death, no pain and no sorrows in the next life. The One that is in us is greater than the one that is of the world ( 1st John 4:4 ) . This is not the end of the world but the end of it is near. As the war draws near we know that the end is near. Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather (Matthew 24:28 ). This is a truth which will become memories for the future. This is for Israel, the Nation of God. God made Israel to love Him. This is the first step of faith to the next life. How many will we see in the next life. This is a moment for us to meditate on. God loves sinners. “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God” (Colossians 3:1).

he only remedy for sinful passions is found in the believers' experience of union with Christ-a union by virtue of which the Christian dies to sin and to the world's way of thinking and doing. The death with Christ involves also participation in his resurrection life. This releases into the believer's life a power that is more than adequate to resist the appetites and attitudes of the lower nature. To set the heart on things above is to desire and to strive for heavenly things. Christ is seated at the right hand of God, the place of supreme privilege and divine authority. Our thoughts and actions must be constantly centered on Christ. Our attitudes, ambitions, and whole outlook on life are molded by Christ's relationship to the believer, and our allegiance to him takes precedence over all earthly allegiances. In the movie, CASUALTIES OF WAR, five American soldiers are on patrol in Vietnam. The sergeant in command decides to kidnap a young Vietnamese woman, so the soldiers can take turns raping her. Two of the groups object. One of them has a rosary around his neck and when the group pressure wears him down; he takes off the crucifix, places it in his pocket, and then takes his turn raping the terrified girl. Only one of the men refused to participate in this despicable crime. Only one listened to his conscience and, thereby, kept it clean. At risk of his life, he reported the crime. This story really happened. Fearing vengeance and to protect his life, secret arrangements were made so that he could in anonymity. The conscientious soldier in the story commented that just because they were living in an environment where they could get blown away any second, his comrades felt that they could do anything that they wanted and it didn't matter. He felt that it was the other way around. Precisely because they could get blasted away any second, they had to be extra careful about what they did; what they did mattered even more. Life is short and uncertain; death may overtake you any moment. Don’t wait for the eleventh hour to accept Jesus as your personal Savior; you may die at 10:30. There is no rule which says the older ones will die first. A grandchild may die long before the demise of the grandparents. But this does not mean we should live and revel in worldly things as we wish with total disregard for God and the outcomes. Instead we must seek to become a part of God’s family through faith in Christ and look forward to eternal life with him. It was a 99-degree September day in San Antonio, when a 10 month old baby girl was accidentally locked inside a parked car by her aunt. Frantically the mother and the aunt ran around the car in near hysteria, while a neighbor attempted to unlock the car with a clothes hanger. Soon the infant was turning purple and had foam on her mouth. It had become a life-or-death situation when Fred Arriola, a wrecker driver, arrived on the scene. He grabbed a hammer and smashed the back window of the car to set the baby free. Was he heralded a hero? Arriola reported, "The lady was mad at me because I broke the window of her car. I just thought, what's more important--the baby or the window?" In our lives, what is more important? Doing God's will or living and doing things as we please with no thoughts about the eternal consequences? Doing God's will is more important. Serving the Lord is far more important than serving ourselves. What we do now will have eternal relevance as evidenced by the action of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. There is always a reaction for every action. To every cause there is an effect. Through the sin of the first man, Adam the natural head of the human race, every one of us is born with a corrupted and sinful nature. This sin affects our total person--- whether it is the mind, the feelings, or our actions. Mankind and the entire universe are contaminated by sin. Furthermore, we are guilty of our many sins. The Holy Spirit now inclines us to do what is good, but our sinful nature constantly draws us away in the direction of sin. We don’t have to be a Bible scholar to understand that something is wrong. We have so many problems. But death is our greatest problem. Death is two-fold, physical and spiritual. Physical death is inevitable, from dust we were made and to dust we shall return. But much worse than physical death is the spiritual death which is the eternal separation from God. But in spite of our iniquities, unrighteousness and sins, God loved us with an everlasting love and has paved the way for the atonement of our sins. That provision was Jesus--- the sacrificial Lamb of God. At the cross a sinless Christ died like a criminal for sinners like you and I. What we do, the decisions and the choices we madetoday will have eternal relevance--- eternal life with God in heaven or eternal punishment in hell. Repentance and faith are the free acts of men. With their own mind, heart and will they must renounce sin. Turning from sin and reaching out in faith to Christ are the acts of man. No one can repent, believe and trust Jesus Christ on our behalves. Salvation is deliverance from sin and death. It cannot be earned nor borrowed. We must personally, knowingly, and willingly believe in Christ to be saved. Then we must live in obedience to God, a life worthy to be called children of the Most High. “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?” Mark 8:36 & 37 The worth of the “soul" is incomparable for it survives the physical death of human. Once a person has forfeited his or her share in eternal life, even the whole world cannot buy back eternal life.“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” (Hebrews 10:23). Remain steadfast and faithful, don’t throw away eternal life for momentary and temporary things of the world.

What dispute? India and China ignore land squabble NEW DELHI, August 30 (AP): For more than 50 years, it has pitted India against China — a smoldering dispute over who should control a swath of land larger than Austria. Two militaries have skirmished. A brief, bloody war has been fought. And today, thousands of soldiers from both countries sit deployed along their shared frontier, doing little but watching each other. But as Beijing confronts countries across the South China and East China seas, displaying its diplomatic and strategic strength in a series of increasingly dangerous territorial disputes, the India-China standoff results in almost nothing beyond regular diplomatic talks and professions of international friendship. Because the last thing the world’s two most populous countries want right now is war with each other. Not when things are going so well. “The territorial issues and the sovereignty issues have not gone away,” said Sujit Dutta, a China scholar at New Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia University. “But the Chinese are not pushing further (into the disputed regions) and neither are the Indians.” “Today, India and China have a new context for their relationship,” he said. That context comes down to two key compo-

nents: An understanding that the disputed land has lost its strategic luster. And money. Just a couple decades ago, India and China were dismissed as nations hobbled by widespread poverty and hopelessly lagging behind the West. Today, China has the world’s second-largest economy, an immense, well-equipped military, an increasingly educated population and a vision for itself as one of the leading nations on earth. India, while economically far behind China, has become a global center for information technology and sees itself as a major player in Asia and elsewhere. If both countries still struggle with widespread internal troubles — poverty, corruption, ethnic divisions, growing class divisions — the rest of the world can no longer write them off. When it comes to turf wars, Beijing today is largely focused on expanding its maritime influence in East Asia and Southeast Asia, with its vast untapped mineral reserves and importance to global trade. So in the East China Sea, China created an air defense perimeter to back up its claims to a speckling of uninhabited islands also claimed by Japan. In the South China Sea, Beijing temporarily moved an oil rig into waters also claimed

by Vietnam, setting off a series of naval confrontations. At first glance, the Himalayan border that India and China share seems ideal for similar clashes. China says the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, an immense territory of nearly 84,000 square kilometers (more than 32,000 square miles), is part of China. India, meanwhile, insists China is illegally occupying the region of Aksai Chin, a rocky and largely empty 37,000-square-kilometer (14,000-square-mile) region far to the east. The two fought a monthlong border war in 1962 that left some 2,000 soldiers dead following a surprise Chinese attack that still embarrasses India, and skirmishes along the frontier continued into the 1970s. While border squabbling occurs every year or so, often when Chinese soldiers are reported spotted in Indian territory, there have been few serious showdowns since the late 1980s. Today, cross-border cooperation is far more common than frontier standoffs. India’s new prime minister, Narendra Modi, spoke repeatedly to top Chinese officials in the first weeks of his administration. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently called the potential for India-China ties “the emerg-

ing tip of a massive buried treasure.” While experts believe diplomatic infrastructure has helped keep things calm — there are now regularly scheduled border talks, military hotlines and designated meeting areas deep in the Himalayas to ensure that unexpected incidents do not flare into warfare — both countries have more to gain by increasing trade and cooperation. Underlying everything else, the Himalayan border region doesn’t have the strategic importance it once did. The 1950s and 1960s were a time when tensions regularly erupted in the region: the Dalai Lama fled across the Himalayas into India after a failed uprising in Tibet in 1959; Americansupported Tibetan rebels made small-scale raids into China from secret bases in Nepal; China secretly built a strategically important road linking two of its most restive regions — Tibet and Xinjiang — through a deeply isolated part of India. But the CIA long ago abandoned the Tibetan rebels, India’s support for the Dalai Lama has waned and China now has plenty of roads to Tibet and Xinjiang. Over the past few years, however, Beijing has pressed ahead with its territorial claims elsewhere, expanding coral

outcroppings, constructing schools on rocky shoals and dispatching the occasional fighter jet. It has argued territorial rights with South Korea, Japan, Vietnam and the Philippines. It has urged the United States to stay out of the disagreements, and made clear to all the countries involved that it sees the region as its own sphere of influence. “We will never trade our core interests or swallow the bitter fruits that undermine our sovereignty, security and development

interests,” Yang Jiechi, China’s top diplomat, said recently at the World Peace Forum. But if things are peaceful now along the IndoChinese border, plenty on both sides believe trouble could flare anew. Willy Lam, a political scientist at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, noted India has become the world’s largest arms buyer as it tries to catch up to China’s growing military might. “Although both sides have been very scrupulous

and careful not to produce new incidents, the prospects for a solution are nowhere in sight,” Lam said. “The arms race is going on despite the obvious improvement of economic and financial relations between the two countries.” China’s military presence along the border with India has been growing for years, and India has recently rushed to catch up: refurbishing air strips, deploying more armored units and frantically constructing new roads high in the

Himalayas. It’s not what you’d expect from true allies. And, many note, that’s not what India and China are. If politics and trade mean they’re getting along now, that will almost certainly not last forever, said T.C.A. Rangachari, a former Indian ambassador and longtime China expert. And the land that doesn’t matter today could very well matter tomorrow. “In 20 years, maybe 30 years,” said Rangachari, “things could all be very different.”

If we call for talks with Pakistan, Food inflation is a concern: Jaitley we become anti-nationals: Omar

sRINAgAR, August 30 (PtI): Under attack for the resolution passed by the Jammu and Kashmir legislative council on resumption of India-Pak dialogue, chief minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday said legislators voice the sentiment of the people who elect them. “We don’t talk here of our own (will). We talk for the people who we represent here,” Omar said in the state assembly. “The council passed a resolution for

resuming talks and all of us became anti-nationals. If we call for war, we become nationalists and if we call for talks, we become antinationals,” he said. The chief minister said, “If we talk about endangering the lives of our army personnel by asking them to fight war and make sacrifices, it becomes big evidence of nationalism. If we want resolution of issues through dialogue, it becomes proof of anti-nationalism.”

“No one among us is anti-national. We might have different thinking on different issues. Amongst us, some might talk about revoking Article 370 and some might talk about strengthening it and some might talk about autonomy, but when it comes to the nation, no one among us plays around with it,” he said. His remarks came against the backdrop of attacks by a section of media which dubbed legislators

from the state as anti-nationals for seeking resumption of dialogue with Pakistan. He said when a legislator takes oath, he does it in the name of the country and not in the name of his party. “So when we talk about something, if it is measured by the yardstick of nationalism or anti-nationalism, and it is decided by someone sitting in a TV studio who has never risked his life, it is surprising,” he said.

NEW DELHI, August 30 (IANs): Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Saturday said that though the economy has recently shown signs of recovery, inflation remains a major concern with the prices of vegetables and food items being affected by seasonal factors and the monsoon. «Food inflation is a concern; normally at a time when prices of some fruits and vegetables are steep it is natural that there will be some inflation; inflation increases along with growth,» Jaitley said here on the occasion of the Na-

tional Democratic Alliance government completing 100 days in office. «In this season the government has taken some special steps to contain inflation, which have been showing results. However, inflation should not grow faster than the income of common man then it becomes a major concern.» Jaitley further said that there were enough food stocks in the country and hence a poor monsoon was not an issue to worry about. «Bad monsoon will impact the food produce to some extent but since there are

No question of alliance with Mamata Banerjee: Left

KoLKAtA, August 30 (PtI): The Left parties, including major partner CPI(M), on Saturday ruled out the possibility of joining hands with Trinamool Congress to counter BJP, a day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that no one was “untouchable” in politics including the communists. “There is no question of alliance with Trinamool or

Mamata Banerjee. It is due to her policies and politics that BJP has made inroads in West Bengal. If we have to fight the communal BJP, we will fight it on our own,” CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta told PTI here. Yesterday in an interview, the TMC chief, when asked whether she was willing to ally with the Left parties, had replied that talks could be held.

“She was the first to bring BJP into the state when she joined hands with them in 1998,” said CPI(M) politburo member Surjya Kanta Mishra, who is also the Leader of the Opposition. Other Left partners such as Forward Bloc and RSP also rejected the idea of joining hands with the Trinamool. “It has to be seen who

is making such statements before taking any step. It is Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress whose terror tactics have rendered thousands of Left workers homeless. It is her appeasement policies that are helping in breeding communal forces in the state,” RSP state secretary Kshiti Goswami said. Forward Bloc gener-

al secretary Debabarata Biswas said, “There is no point in giving a reaction to a baseless statement. It is not at all possible to forge an alliance with Trinamool.” Banerjee while speaking on the JD(U)-RJD tieup in Bihar had said that if such a situation arose in West Bengal it could be thought over as none was untouchable.

She had also spoken about her party’s tie-up with SUCI saying if anybody came forward, talks could be held as in a democracy no option should be closed. Asked whether she was ready to join hands with CPI-M, Banerjee had replied, “I did not say that. I only said if any proposal comes, we will discuss it in our party.”

Modi in Japan: Kyoto-Varanasi partnership pact inked ies in the world, and Kyoto, which was the capital of Japan for over 1,000 years. The partnership agreement was signed soon after Modi was received warmly by his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe. The partnership focuses on how to preserve heritage while building smart cities. It was signed between Kyoto Mayor Daisaku Kadokawa and India’s Ambassador to Japan Deepa Gopalan Wadhwa, said ministry of external affairs spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin. Since the end of the Nara Period (794 A.D.), Kyoto has been at the crossroads of Japanese history. Till the Emperor moved to Tokyo, it was the capital of Japan for over 1,000 years. With its ancient temples and shrines, Kyoto is practically the cultural centre of Japan. This is his first bilateral sojourn outside South Asia since he took office in May. Shinzo Abe, in a special gesture, flew down to Kyoto to receive Modi. Before leaving for Japan, Modi expressed confidence that his visit would open a “new chapter” in bilateral relations and give a boost to their defence and security cooperation. “We will discuss how to boost our defence and security cooperation, including in defence technology, equipment and industry, in line with the evolving domestic policies of the two countries,” the prime minister said. From Kyoto, Modi travels to Tokyo, where he would discuss with Abe the roadmap for “our global and strategic partnership in the years ahead”. India is keen on early

conclusion of the civil nuclear agreement with Japan, which will facilitate supply of its nuclear technology to India. The two countries have been holding talks on the issue since 2010. With the Modi government having initiated a project for starting bullet trains in the country, that issue is also expected to engage early attention at the discussions. While the two countries have cooperation of navies that apparently share perceptions in terms of maritime security and anti-pirate operations, negotiations are underway for sale of US-2 amphibious aircraft by Japan to India. This is Modi’s third official bilateral visit after becoming prime minister in May this year. He made bilateral visits to South Asian neighbours Bhutan and Nepal after becoming prime minister. Besides that, the only other visit he made abroad was to Brazil for the BRICS (Brazil, India, China, Russia, South Africa) summit.

adequate food stocks available in the country, it is not a cause for worry,» he said. When asked about his expectation of a policy rate cut due to improvement in consumer price index (CPI) and wholesale price index (WPI), Jaitley said: «If left on me I would want a policy revision soon.» Jaitley added that the apex bank was looking into the issue of policy rates and effects of inflation on the economy. On the recent figures showing a high fiscal deficit for the first quarter of the current fiscal, the finance

minister said it is not representative due to factors of previous quarters affecting it. «The first quarter deficit is not representative as it takes into account the fiscal needs of the last quarter of previous finance year.» He said that the current target of containing the deficit to 4.1 percent of the GDP is achievable. The minister added that he expected the stalled talks on the implementation of goods and services tax between the centre and state governments to move towards some kind of larger consensus.

CBI charges Dayanidhi Maran, Malaysian tycoon in telecoms scandal MuMBAI, August 30 (REutERs): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed charges against a former minister, his media mogul brother, and a Malaysian tycoon over alleged corruption to help Malaysia’s Maxis group take control of an Indian mobile phone carrier eight years ago. Tamil Nadu politician Dayanidhi Maran, who was India’s telecommunications minister between 2004 and 2007; his brother billionaire Kalanithi Maran; Malaysia’s second-richest man T. Ananda Krishnan and his aide Augustus Ralph Marshall, are among those named in the charge sheet filed in a New Delhi court on Friday, a police spokeswoman said. The case is separate from a massive scandal that Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) said had lost the government about $29 billion during a 2008 telecoms permits sale process. Another former telecoms minister and several company executives are among the accused in an ongoing trial over that case. The CBI, India’s top crime-fighting agency, started investigating the Maran brothers and Krishnan in 2011 after allegations that the telecoms minister had forced the sale of mobile carrier Aircel, allowing Krishnan’s Maxis to acquire a controlling stake in 2006. “The investigation revealed that the then (telecoms minister) had allegedly abused (his) official position and constricted the business environment of Chennai-based private firm on frivolous grounds with an intent to force its exit from telecom business and its sale to Malaysiabased company,” the CBI said in a statement on Friday. Companies controlled by billionaire Kalanithi Maran’s Sun Group, which runs a media business including television channels and satellite TV services, had received “illegal gratification” totalling about 7.42 billion rupees ($123 million), the CBI said. About 5.49 billion rupees of it was “in the garb of” the premium paid for the purchase of a stake in a Sun Group company, the agency said. The charges against the Marans, Krishnan and his aide include criminal conspiracy, the CBI said. Astro All Asia Networks Plc, Maxis Communications Bhd [MXSCC.UL], South Asia Entertainment Holdings Ltd - all part of Ananda Krishnan’s business empire - and Sun Group’s Sun Direct TV Pvt. Ltd have also been named in the police charge sheet. A spokeswoman for Maxis said she could not immediately comment. A Sun Group spokesman also declined comment. Dayanidhi Maran and Kalanithi Maran could not be immediately reached for a comment. Dayanidhi Maran has previously denied any wrongdoing. Maxis had said in October 2011 that it was cooperating with the probe and was confident that the allegations against it would prove to be “unfounded and without basis.”

World events endanger Obama legacy Your face can WASHINGTON, AuGuST 30 (AP): Almost six years into a presidency that had inspired hope for a new era of American leadership, Barack Obama has reached a point where it will be difficult to salvage his international affairs legacy in the face of blooming crises that critics and even some supporters blame on a commander in chief they view as a feckless. The president has taken serious battering over foreign policy, where his objective as he took office in 2009 was to undo what he saw as the mistakes of his predecessor, George W. Bush. Two years after taking office, Obama had all U.S. troops out of Iraq. He’s on course to pull all but a vestigial American force from Afghanistan at the end of 2016, just before he leaves office. Four months into his presidency, Obama went to Cairo to tell the Arab world he wanted a new start and understood their frustrations and anger. In Europe, Obama was beloved even before his election for his promise of inclusiveness and collegiality with allies that had been dismissed by Bush’s Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld as “old Europe” for their refusal to sign on to the invasion and occupation of Iraq. Obama called for a “reset” in relations with Russia which were on a precipitous downward slide even before the Ukraine crisis. He boldly sent U.S. Special Forces deep into Pakistan to kill Osama bin

Laden. But with less than three years left of his presidency, much of what he planned didn’t work out, and events over this summer and reaching further back have seen potential troubles ripen into crises. What happened? “Part of it is his own natural risk aversion, part of it is the cruel and unforgiving nature of the world. And part is the fact that he was dealt an extremely complicated hand,” said Aaron Miller, a former Middle East adviser to Republican and Democrat secretaries of state and a scholar at the Wilson Center. Another factor has been nearly blanket opposition from Republicans in Congress, particularly after the opposition party took control of the House of Representatives in 2010. He was blocked from his promise of closing the Guantanamo Bay prison for terrorists, and could not win back-

ing for legislation to place America on a bold path to deal with climate change. The Arab Spring uprisings in the Middle East mostly turned into extended, bloody and brutal struggles for power. In the Syrian civil war, where Obama repeatedly said Bashar al-Assad must step down, the administration stepped back from threatened airstrikes after he used chemical weapons. In the meantime, the fearsome Islamic State terror group took power in the north of the country and is winning the fight against the moderate Free Syrian Army, which sought to oust Assad. Worse still, the brutal organization has swept into Iraq and occupied much of the northwest of the country. With the group preying on ethnic groups and Shiite Muslim Arabs in Iraq and threatening to take control of the Kurdish region, Obama finally

Drought leaves up to 2.81 million hungry in Central America: U.N.

OROCuINA, AuGuST 30 (REuTERS): A severe drought has ravaged crops in Central America and as many as 2.81 million people are struggling to feed themselves, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) said on Friday, though the region’s coffee crop has been largely unscathed. The drought, which is also affecting South America, has been particularly hard on the so-called “dry corridor” of Central America, which includes southern Guatemala, northern Honduras and western El Salvador. “The drought has killed us. We lost all our corn and beans,” said Olman Funez,

a 22-year-old farmer who lives in Orocuina, a rural town in southern Honduras. Funez earns $4.74 per diem as a day laborer, and says he and his wife are rationing what food they have. Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega recently allowed 40,000 tonnes of red beans and 73,500 tonnes of white corn to be imported to help lower prices. Guatemala declared a state of emergency after 256,000 families lost their crop. “I am 60 years old, and this is the first time I have seen a crisis like this,” said Jesus Samayoa, a farmer in Jutiapa, about 160 km (99 miles) from Guatemala

City. Pea, green bean and broccoli farmers estimate losses of 30 to 40 percent of their crop. Guatemala’s national coffee association Anacafe said earlier this month that a preliminary survey of two of the country’s coffee-growing regions, Santa Rosa and Jutiapa, revealed that drought will cause output to fall next season by 3 percent, or about 9,600 60kg bags. However, none of Central America’s four other major coffee producers Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Nicaragua have revised their output forecasts for the coming season due to the drought.

authorized U.S. airstrikes in Iraq against the Islamic State. As he made clear Thursday, however, he remains unready to use the American military against the group in Syria. Compounding the problem in Iraq: The U.S. left Iraq with former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, an intensely sectarian Shiite Muslim, in charge. He had shut minority Sunni Muslims out of power, breeding discontent and creating fertile ground for Islamic State fighters, who also are Sunni. When the group swept into Iraq earlier this summer, the American trained and armed Iraqi army fled, leaving behind American weapons and armored vehicles for the invaders. But al-Maliki did step down under heavy U.S. pressure. The narrative of Obama’s foreign policy legacy “has been thrown into disarray,” said James Goldgeier, dean of the American

University School of International Service. “Now you have to go back and deal with the emergence of what is becoming an incredibly dangerous situation in Iraq.” And, he said, there is great uncertainty about the U.S. departure from Afghanistan, where two presidential candidates still battle over the election outcome. Then there is Russia’s meddling in Ukraine, where a new pro-Western government is fighting to put down a pro-Moscow rebellion in the east of the country. Obama and the European Union, under extreme pressure from the White House, have imposed a series of sanctions against Russia and President Vladimir Putin. While that has damaged the Russian economy, it has not convinced Putin to end his military assistance to the rebels. Most recently the United States and NATO have declared Moscow has

about 1,000 new soldiers and new heavy armor in Ukraine. On Thursday, Obama said again that the United States would not become involved militarily in Ukraine. The one foreign policy bright spot is negotiations with Iran aimed at ensuring it will not use its nuclear program to build an atomic weapon. After failing to reach a deal by the summer deadline, the talks were extended. Miller, of the Wilson Center, said Obama will certainly be remembered for tracking down and killing bin Laden. He called that a “heroic act.” But the emergence of the Islamic state group “will diminish that somewhat.” Miller said the nature of today’s world has closed down the possibility of future heroic acts for Obama or any president to come. “So I think it’s game over here in terms of his image.”

BEIRuT, AuGuST 30 (AP): Clashes erupted between al-Qaida-linked Syrian rebels and U.N. peacekeepers in the Golan Heights on Saturday after the militants surrounded their encampment, activists and officials said, as the international organization risked being sucked further into the conflict. Other U.N. peacekeepers were able to flee from a different encampment that that was also surrounded by rebels of the Nusra Front, al-Qaida’s Syrian affiliate, they said. The clashes came after Syrian rebel groups, in-

cluding the Nusra Front, overran the Quneitra crossing — located on the frontier between Syrian and Israeli controlled parts of the Golan Heights — on Wednesday, seizing 44 Fijian peacekeepers. The Nusra Front also surrounded the nearby Rwihana and Breiqa encampments, where other U.N. peacekeepers were holed up. The gunbattle began early Saturday at the Rwihana base some 1.5 miles (2.3 kilometers) from Quneitra, where 40 Filipino peacekeepers were surrounded by Nusra fighters

who were ordering them to surrender, said Rami Abdurrahman of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Philippines’ Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin gave a similar account but did not name the armed group. Abdurrahman, whose information comes from a network of activists throughout Syria, said he was not aware of any fatalities among the 40 Filipino peacekeepers in the Rwihana encampment as sporadic fighting continued throughout the day. China tells journalists to learn ‘Marxist news values’

BEIJING, AuGuST 30 (REuTERS): China ordered its journalists on Saturday to learn “Marxist news values” and uphold the principles of news as prescribed by the ruling Communist Party, the latest step in President Xi Jinping’s crackdown on the media. The guidelines by the All China Journalists’ Association, published by state news agency Xinhua, are aimed at both traditional and online media and are another sign of Xi’s politically conservative agenda. The association said journalists “must learn to master Marxist news values”.

“Let us hold high the banner of socialist core values,” the report said, using the party’s term for orthodox beliefs. Xi has espoused old school Maoism as he seeks to court powerful conservative elements in the party. Like many officials before him, Xi is steeped in the party’s long-held belief that loosening control too quickly or even at all could lead to chaos and the break up of the country. In July, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television said China would toughen curbs on journalists disclosing state

and commercial secrets. Early this year, Chinese journalists also had to pass a new ideology exam to keep their press cards. They were required to do a minimum 18 hours of training on topics including Marxist news values and Socialism with Chinese Characteristics. Chinese state media has traditionally been the main vehicle for party propaganda. Reforms over the past decade that have allowed greater media commercialization and limited increases in editorial independence, combined with the rise of social media, have weakened government control slightly.

Syrian rebels attack peacekeepers in Golan Heights

An armed group of men, not specified which group of rebels, gather at Syria's Quneitra border crossing between Syria and the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights on August 29. It was unclear if the men were connected to an armed group that, the United Nations said, detained more than 40 U.N. peacekeepers during fighting in Syria early Thursday. The peacekeepers were detained on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights during a "period of increased fighting between armed elements and the Syrian Arab Armed Forces," the office of U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement. ( AP Photo)

NEW YORk, AuGuST 30 (IANS): The facial features of an individual can reflect whether or not a person is experiencing atrial fibrillation - a treatable but potentially dangerous heart condition. With the assistance of a web camera and software algorithms, scientists demonstrated that subtle changes in skin colour can be used to detect the uneven blood flow caused by atrial fibrillation. “This technology holds the potential to identify and diagnose cardiac disease using contact less video monitoring,” said Jean-Philippe Couderc from University of Rochester’s heart research follow-up program. The technology employs a software algorithm developed by Xerox Corporation Ltd that scans the face and can detect changes in skin colour that are imperceptible to the naked eye. Sensors in digital cameras are designed to record three colours: red, green and blue. Hemoglobin - a component of blood - absorbs more of the green in the spectrum of light and this subtle change can be detected by the camera’s sensor. During the study, participants were simultaneously hooked up to an electrocardiogram (ECG) so results from the facial scan could be compared to the actual electrical activity of the heart. The researchers found that the colour changes detected by video monitoring corresponded with an individual’s heart rate as detected on an ECG. “Essentially, the irregular electrical activity of the heart found in people with atrial fibrillation could be identified by observing the pulses of blood flowing through the veins on the face as it absorbed or reflected green light with each heart beat,” Couderc explained. The study found that the video monitoring technique called videoplethymography had an error rate of 20 percent, comparable to the 17 to 29 percent error rate associated with ECG measurements. The results were published online in the journal Heart Rhythm.

man, Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala, also said there were no casualties. The 35 Filipino U.N. peacekeepers at the Breiqa encampment were extracted on Saturday morning, with the assistance of Irish peacekeepers who rushed to the scene, said officials. The Irish U.N. peacekeeper battalion, which is tasked with emergency responses, evacuated all the Filipino U.N. peacekeepers on Saturday morning, said a military official who spoke on condition that his name and country of origin not be revealed, citing army policy. He said there was no shooting involved, and no injuries. He said that the Irish battalion also evacuated another base on Friday but provided no further details. Gazmin confirmed that peacekeepers from his country were “extricated.” The Philippine military said there were 35 Filipino troops in the encampment. An Israeli military spokesman confirmed that a number of U.N. peacekeepers entered Israel. He spoke on condition of anonymity citing military guidelines. It was not immediately clear which rebel group was holding the Fijian U.N. peacekeepers, although it was likely to be the Nusra

Front, said Syrian activist Abdurrahman. The Nusra Front has recently seized hostages to exchange for prisoners detained in Syria and Lebanon. The situation of the peacekeepers, tasked with monitoring a 1974 disengagement accord between Syria and Israel, remains “very, very fluid,” the U.N. secretary-general’s spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, told reporters Friday at the U.N. headquarters in New York. The U.N. said in a statement that it had received assurances from credible sources that the Fijian peacekeepers “are safe and in good health.” U.N. Secretary-General Ban Kimoon has condemned the detention of the Fijians and called for their immediate release. The U.N. mission, known as UNDOF, has 1,223 troops from six countries: Fiji, India, Ireland, Nepal, Netherlands and the Philippines. Various rebel groups have been engaged in intense fighting with the Syrian military in and near the Golan Heights. Also Saturday, a Syrian activist released a video showing extremists from the Islamic State group opening fire and killing dozens of men stripped down to their underwear.

The men in the video were likely those who were captured after the extremists overran a Syrian airfield on Sunday; Syrian soldiers who were stuck behind front lines after the northeastern Tabqa air base fell to the Islamic State group. The video, released by an activist who uses the name Abu Ibrahim Raqqawi, corresponded with The Associated Press reporting of the event. It matched a series of other videos that were released since Wednesday. One video showed the men being held in a concrete-floor room; another showed the men forced to march through a barren landscape in their underwear, herded like sheep. Another showed their seemingly lifeless bodies in piles on the ground. The British-based Observatory earlier said around 120 captive government troops from Tabqa were killed near the base. There was no immediate comment from the Syrian government. The Islamic State group uses violence and images of violence, from masskillings to beheadings, to instill fear in its opponents and win recruits as it seeks to expand a proto-state it has carved out in Syria and Iraq.

BONANZA, AuGuST 30 (AP): The first 11 of 24 freelance gold miners trapped by a collapse in a mine in northern Nicaragua have been rescued and crews were working early Saturday to free more, officials said. The men walked out of the mine on their own as their relatives and fellow miners cheered late Friday night, more than 24 hours after a collapse at the El Comal gold and silver mine in the town of Bonanza left them cut off in a mine shaft. Rescued miner Marvin Urbina, 34, said he and some of his fellow miners saw an avalanche of mud and rock coming their way. They stuck to the walls of the mine but at least four of their co-workers were crushed by the mud and rock streaming down the shaft, he said. “I asked God to let me live and he listened to me and now I will serve Him,” an emotional Urbina told Channel 6. Interior Vice Minister Carlos Najar said the miners were a bit dehydrated but in good health. “They are coming out little by little, it’s a slow process but we want to make sure they can get out safely,” Najar told Channel 6 state television. He added that more of the miners are expected to be rescued overnight.m The miners were checked by paramedics and taken to a clinic in Bonanza, which is located about 260 miles (420 kilometers) northeast of Managua. Earlier, authorities said 20 of the 24 miners had been located and had communicated with rescuers at the El Comal mine in northern Nicaragua. Najar didn’t say how many of the 24 miners they expected to rescue. Hundreds of relatives and fellow miners had gathered to pray outside the mine as rescuers lined up several ladders along a 200-foot long tunnel leading toward where the men were trapped. The mine cuts into the side of a mountain and then goes upward. Commander Javier Amaya of the rescue team said the rescue plan involved groups “of five or 10 miners entering the mine on wooden ladders, tying themselves off and going in until they reach them.” Outside the mine, Jorge Hernandez, 25, said he learned his brother was one of the miners trapped while watching television in Nicaragua’s capital, Managua. He rushed to Bonanza. “We’re praying to God with all of our souls so that my brother and the other men can be rescued alive and well,” he said. He added that his brother Michael, 24, moved to Bonanza from Managua last year to work in the mine. It was unclear if he was one of the 11 miners rescued. The gold and silver mine is operated by Colombia’s Hemco. The trapped miners are not employees of Hemco, but rather freelancers allowed to work in the company’s concession if they sell any gold they find to the firm, mining company spokesman Gregorio Downs told The Associated Press. Downs said the company had warned miners about the danger of working in the El Comal area, especially after two miners died in a rain-caused landslide there last month. “We live by extracting mineral from Hemco. They told us digging here was risky, but sometimes one is willing to risk it for a few more cents,” said Absalon Toledo, leader of the informal miners. According to the website of Nicaragua-based Hemco, the company has mined in the north Atlantic municipality since 1995 and employs 532 workers, who process 700 tons of material a day. The company, majority owned by Colombia’s Mineros S.A., says it produces more than 2,500 pounds (1,150 kilograms, 37,000 troy ounces) of gold a year and is Nicaragua’s 12th largest exporter.

Transfer news roma striker Mattia Destro catches attention of Mourinho

London, August 30 (Agencies): Jose Mourinho has praised the talent of Mattia Destro amid reports the Chelsea manager is lining the Roma striker up as a replacement for the AC Milan-bound Fernando Torres. Spain international Torres finally agreed a deal with the Serie A giants on Friday and rumours suggest Mourinho could be set to reunite with Italian frontman Destro. The 23-year-old rose through the ranks at Inter

Milan and Mourinho believes he saw the signs of a “top striker” during his time as coach at the San Siro. Destro was plying his trade as an under-21 player during Mourinho’s time with Inter but struggled to break into the club’s first team, prompting a move to Roma where he has once again caught the eye of the Chelsea boss. “Mattia was a kid when I was at Inter,” he told the Daily Mirror. “I think he was like 18. He was playing in the Primavera team, our under-21s, train-

ing with us so many times. “Everyone knew at the club that his potential was there to be a top striker. He was unlucky because we had Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Adriano, then Samuel Eto’o, Diego Milito. “So it was not easy for him to come into the first team. The ones that got the chance were Davide Santon and Giulio Donati.” Torres’ three-year spell at Stamford Bridge is expected to end soon with the striker set for a medical in Milan on Saturday and the completion of his reported two-year loan deal could pave the way for Mourinho to recruit another forward before Monday’s transfer deadline. Commenting on the Spaniard’s imminent departure, Mourinho said: “He is going to leave because he wants to try a new life, a new club and a new league. “I believe that it is to try to be happier than he was in the last couple of years.”

Spanish striker Fernando Torres, second from right in white shirt, is surrounded by AC Milan supporter as he arrives at the "Madonnina Clinic' for a medical visit in Milan, Italy, Saturday, August 30. Chelsea has agreed terms with AC Milan for Torres to join the Serie A club in a two-year loan deal. The Premier League club and Milan announced the agreement on their websites Friday, adding that "the move is now subject to Fernando agreeing personal terms with AC Milan and passing a medical examination." Torres set to join aC Milan on loan

London, August 30 (AFP): Chelsea striker Fernando Torres is set to end his miserable spell at Stamford Bridge by joining AC Milan on loan for the next two seasons. Torres has endured a difficult time with the Blues since his then-British record £50 million (63m euros, $82.9m) move from Liverpool in January 2011. The 30-year-old Spain international was unable to repeat his prolific Liverpool form in west London and has scored just 45 goals in 172 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea. Daley Blind set to join ManU

the hAgue, August 30 (iAns): Ajax and Manchester United have reached a deal for the transfer of Daley Blind to the latter, Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf and national broadcaster NOS reported Saturday. According to the reports, United will pay around 18-20 million euros for the Dutch international. Only the last details of the deal have to be completed and after the medical examination Blind will sign a contract of 4-5 years, reports Xinhua. The son of Danny Blind, former Dutch international and current assistant coach of the national team, had a contract until mid-2016 in Amsterdam. Blind will miss Ajax training Saturday and is no longer part of the squad for Sunday's match against FC Groningen. Last Sunday he played his last match for Ajax against PSV (1-3 loss). The 24-year-old made his debut for Ajax in 2008 and played a total of 102 league matches for the first team. In the second half of the 2009-10 season he was active in 17 matches on loan for FC Groningen and only became a regular starter in the last two seasons. The 19 times international played

"The move is now subject to Fernando agreeing personal terms with AC Milan and passing a medical examination." Milan made their move for the former Atletico Madrid star after selling Mario Balotelli to Liverpool earlier this week. Assuming Torres completes the move, he will surely go down as one of the biggest flops in Premier League history, given the size of both his reputation and the transfer and wages required to lure him from Anfield. I'm one of world's best at number 10: Mesut Ozil

London, August 30 (AFP): Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil has reacted to criticism of his performances by declaring that he is one of the world's best number 10s, but is being played out of position. Ozil, 25, joined Arsenal from Real Madrid a year ago in a club-record £42 million ($69.7 million, 31.1 million euros) transfer, but he shone only fitfully in his first season at the Emirates Stadium. Nevertheless, he finished the season as an FA Cup-winner and then won the World Cup with Germany, and he believes that if he is yet to impose himself in the Premier League, it is because manager Arsene Wenger plays him on the left flank. "I'm one of the best players in the world in that number 10 position. Fans, coaches, players and everyone knows that my best position is playmaker. It's different playing on the left," he told Saturday's edition of the Daily Telegraph. "When I was in Madrid, I often played on the right. I enjoyed that because I'm left-footed and I was able to cut inside to give assists and get shots on target. On the left, it's more difficult. "The opinions of fans are important to me and I'm happy they have such

high expectations of me. I have high expectations of myself." Wenger had defended Ozil on Friday, comparing him to a virtuoso musician and claiming that his contributions to Arsenal's attacking play were unfairly overlooked. "People are very harsh on Ozil because he's a player who is easy with his play," said the Frenchman, ahead of his side's trip to Leicester City on Sunday. "When you watch his game back the next day, you think, 'What a player.' Everything he does is intelligent and the timing of absolutely everything he does is absolutely perfect. "He's like a guy who plays music with perfect timing. There aren't many players like that." Despite his reservations about where he has been asked to play, Ozil said that he enjoyed working with Wenger. "The whole club can be proud to have such a fantastic manager with so much experience, playing with style and doing so many great things for 18 years here," he said. "The boss has always blooded youngsters, and helped make them into some of the best players in the world. That's also why I came here. I wanted to develop myself further."

Chelsea, in which he was a bit-part player as the club won the Champions League, the Europa League and the FA Cup. Torres was a shadow of the player who terrorised defences across Europe in a Liverpool shirt and the raw statistics tell the full story of his Chelsea nightmare. He averaged one goal every 3.8 matches for the Blues, compared to one every 1.8 matches in his four years with Liverpool, while each goal effectively cost Chelsea £1.1 million. Just hours earlier on Friday, Mourinho had claimed Chelsea couldn't afford to lose Torres because it would leave them short of options in the attacking department. His apparent change of heart means Torres will need to be replaced, with a move for Roma's Italian striker Mattia Destro a pos-

sibility before the transfer window closes on Monday. Mourinho did admit he could understand if Torres, dropped by Spain for their forthcoming matches against France and Macedonia, wanted to leave given the criticism he has suffered at Chelsea. "If he wants to leave, in the case he wants to, it's because he wants to try a new life, a new club, probably a new league," Mourinho said. "So if he wants to leave, which until this moment I have not one single word about, I believe that is to try to be happier than he was in the last couple of years. "This is a very human club in the way the club approaches this kind of situation. "If he comes to us in these last couple of days, any possibility would be analysed by us as a club and the best decision for him."

Torres has two years remaining on his £150,000-aweek Chelsea contract, meaning he is unlikely to play for the Blues again because he would be a free agent by the time his spell at the San Siro is over. His move to Italy will bring the curtain down on a disastrous stint with

dAmbuLLA, August 30 (AFP): Seamer Thisara Perera claimed four for 34 as Sri Lanka bowled Pakistan out for 102 in the third and decisive one-day international in Dambulla on Saturday. London, August 30 (ReuteRs): Champions Manchester City suffered a stunning 1-0 home defeat

to Stoke City on Saturday as their cast of attacking talents were blunted in a lifeless display that cost them

their first dropped points of the season. Mame Biram Diouf scored a superb individual goal to silence the City fans who have become used to seeing one-sided romps at their Etihad stadium, especially against the Premier League's lesser lights. Swansea City's excellent start to the season continued as they swept aside West Bromwich Albion 3-0 to move top of the fledgling table with a maximum nine points from their opening three games as Southampton came from behind to beat West Ham United 3-1. Crystal Palace, playing their first game under new manager Neil Warnock, scored through on-loan Wilfried Zaha in the fifth minute of stoppage time to grab a 3-3 draw at Newcastle United and Queens Park Rangers beat Sunderland 1-0 for their first win since gaining promotion.

ning the toss, never recovered after losing opener Sharjeel Khan in the third over, caught at second slip off Dhammika Prasad. Prasad, who replaced the off-form Nuwan Kulasekara, then had the other opener, Ahmed Shehzad, caught at mid-on to make it 14-2. The third wicket fell at the same total when Lasith Malinga had Mohammad Hafeez leg-before for one as the TV umpire upheld the decision following a review by the batsman. It soon became 55-5 by the 19th over when skipper Misbah-ul Haq was run out for 18 by a direct throw from Tillakaratne Dilshan and Umar Akmal holed out off Perera for seven. Pakistan lost the next three wickets in the space of

11 deliveries, including the important one of big-hitter Shahid Afridi who skied a catch to the point fence off Seekkuge Prasanna. Pakistan`s chances of a dramatic win rest on their spin spearhead Saeed Ajmal, who was back after missing the previous two matches to have his bowling action tested in Australia. Ajmal flew to Brisbane after his action was reported by the umpires during the preceding Test series, which Sri Lanka won 2-0. He is allowed to play on till the results of the tests are made known. Ajmal replaced leftarm seamer Junaid Khan in the team. Pakistan won the first match in Hambantota by four wickets, before Sri Lanka drew level with a 77run win in the second game at the same venue.

Speaking about her rise to fame, she said: ‘’Luckily it was so long ago that I can’t remember what it was like when it happened. But I’m still here, I’m still alive and I’m not a drug addict so it must have been all right. ‘’ The ‘Begin Again’ star is married to Klaxons vocalist James Righton and admits it seems a lot more common for young musicians than movie stars to become embroiled in a world of drugs because they live their lives as ‘’extremely as they can’’. She added to Loaded magazine: ‘’They very much walk that line. Hugh Grant returns to his rom-com roots for The Rewrite

I

f you loved About a Boy and Music and Lyrics, Hugh Grant’s latest rom-com The Rewrite will be right up your street. Grant plays fallen-from-grace screenwriter Keith Michaels who, once a happily married Golden Globe winner, is now divorced, broke and out of ideas. But Keith is given a second chance when his agent finds him a job as a university lecturer, aiming to teach students how to write films. It’s hardly his dream gig but his enthusiasm soon steps up a notch when he meets single mum Holly (Marisa Tomei) and realises they have something in common: the desire for a second shot. Yes, it all sounds quite “Music and Lyrics” - man grappling with life as a washed-up has-been - but that should come as no surprise given that Marc Lawrence was in the director’s chair for both projects. Also starring The West Wing’s Allison Janney, JK Simmons and Bella Heathcote, The Rewrite is released in UK cinemas on 8th October 2014. The film comes from writer/ director Marc Lawrence, who has previously worked with Grant on Did You Hear About the Morgans?, as well as Music and Lyrics, and Two Weeks Notice.

Maria Sharapova survives as upsets rock US Open

NEW YORK, August 30 (AFP): World number two Simona Halep and two-time champion Venus Williams tumbled out of the US Open on Friday, but Maria Sharapova bucked the upset trend that rocked the women's draw. Croatian Mirjana LucicBaroni, a former phenom now a 32-year-old veteran who had to fight through qualifying, shocked secondseeded Halep, the French Open runner-up, 7-6 (8/6), 6-2. At the other end of the age spectrum, Swiss 17-year-old Belinda Bencic toppled sixth-seeded German Angelique Kerber 6-1, 7-5. The last Grand Slam of the year has now lost four of its top 10 women's seeds, after the second-round departures of Agnieszka Radwanska and Ana Ivanovic. Errani's triumph over 19th-seeded Williams wasn't strictly speaking an upset, but the 13th-seeded Italian had to dig deep to notch her first career victory over the American after three defeats. Williams twice came back from a break down in the third, then broke Errani to serve for the match at 5-3. She couldn't hang on, however, surrendering her serve as they battled to the tiebreaker, in which Errani took a 5-2 lead only for Williams to battle back to 5-5 before at last succumbing. Sharapova also found herself in a power struggle, but emerged with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over German 26th seed Sabine Lisicki in a match which finished after midnight. Both women had more unforced errors than

3rd ODI: India win by 6-wicket

NOttiNghAm, August 30 (AgENciEs): India further strengthened their limited-overs credentials as they beat England in the third ODI at Trent Bridge on Saturday to take a 2-0 lead in the five-game series. Chasing an average target of 228 to win, the Indians suffered just four blows in the form of Shikhar Dhawan (16), Ajinkya Rahane (45) Virat Kohli (40) and lastmatch centurion Suresh Raina (42) on their way to victory. Rayudu (64* off 78 balls, 6x4s) hit his third fifty and his fourth-wicket 87run stand with Raina laid the foundations of a convincing six-wicket win. All Indian wickets were a result of loose shots. Dhawan looked good before hitting straight to point; Rahane , who was promoted to the opening spot after Rohit Sharma's finger injury in the second ODI that ruled him out of the rest of the series, played like a man possessed until the caught-behind off Steven Finn in the 18th over, while Kohli gave signs of getting back to form before giving a simple catch to mid-on off Ben Stokes. Kohli's wicket brought Rainatothecreaseandheand Rayudu played with a lot of conviction. A miss stumping late in the Indian chase was the only blemish in Rayudu's otherwise brilliant innings. Raina, however, fell against the run of play, holing out to Stokes off James Tredwell. Thereafter Rayudu and Ravindra Jadeja ensured there were no hiccups in India's march, taking the team home in 43 overs. The fourth ODI of the series will be played in Bir-

mingham on September 2. Earlier, Graame Swann and Michael Vaughan's fears that the current England team can't win the World Cup surfaced again as the hosts, posted an innocuous 227 all out in 50 overs after being put in to bat. England got off to a solid start though, as Alastair Cook and new ODI face Alex Hales added 82 in 18 overs. The Indian pacers got some movement off the pitch in the initial overs but

Cook and Hales took on a cautious approach, nullifying the bowlers and keeping their wickets intact. With the partnership threatening the tourists, MS Dhoni deployed last-match centurion Suresh Raina and the move paid dividends as the offspinner got rid of Hales (42) who topedged to Dhoni while attempting a sweep. Encouraged by his move, Dhoni brought in another part-time offie, Ambati Rayudu, and

he had Cook stumped for 44. Two overs later, Ravindra Jadeja got in on the act, having Joe Root stumped for two with a ball that angled in and turned away. England would have hoped that Eoin Morgan, arguably their best limitedovers batsman, would bail the team out but the lefthander, after scoring 10, edged R Ashwin to Dhoni behind the wickets. Ian Bell (28) and Ben Stokes (2) also failed to make any differ-

ence. The experienced Bell fell on account of a run-out while Raina dove on his right to take a splendid catch in the slips to dispatch Stokes off Ashwin. After that for England, it was only a matter of reaching a respectable total to test India's ODI specialists. Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes added 33 for the seventh wicket to take the team closer to the 200-run mark before the latter found Mohit Sharma at deep midwicket off Mohammed Shami.

winners -- Sharapova by 32 to 20. In a match that saw nine breaks of serve, Sharapova broke Lisicki in the final game to clinch the win when the German fired a forehand out on Sharapova's third

match point. "It was a really tough opponent I had today, a very aggressive, big server," Sharapova said. "I just tried to concentrate on my return, I wasn't serving as well as I wanted to."

United held to a draw again

C M Y K

BuRNLEY, August 30 (AP): Angel Di Maria's promising debut failed to inspire lackluster Manchester United to a first win of the season on Saturday as Burnley held on for a 0-0 draw in the Premier League. United has just two points from three games under new manager Louis van Gaal. The Argentina midfielder, played in central midfield and was one of United's best players at Turf Moor before being substituted in the 70th minute. Di Maria set up United's best two chances of the first half, his raking ball setting up Robin van Persie for a chance that was parried away by goalkeeper Tom Heaton while Juan Mata slipped as he attempted to convert Di Maria's cross. Sticking with his 3-5-2 formation after Tuesday's embarrassing 4-0 loss to third-tier MK Dons in the League Cup, Van Gaal will be happy to see his muchmaligned defense keep a first clean sheet but there was a lack of cutting edge
