‘Decision on UPSC row at appropriate time’

New Delhi, August 2 (iANs): The government will share its decision on the row over the civil service entrance examination at an “appropriate time”, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Officer Jitendra Singh said Saturday. “At an appropriate time, the government will share whatever the decisions are,” Jitendra Singh told reporters after meeting Home Minister Rajnath Singh over the issue. Bharatiya Janata Party leader J.P. Nadda said the Narendra Modi government is serious about solving the issue. “Government is seriously looking into the concerns raised by the students. Government and the party are together trying to solve the issue,” he said. “I also appeal to the students to maintain calm, a decision will be taken as soon as possible,” he said. The aspirants for the examination, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), have been demanding the aptitude test (CSAT-II) be scrapped as they term it discriminatory to those from Hindispeaking states as well as humanities students. The CSAT-II paper in the UPSC preliminary exam carries questions on comprehension, interpersonal skills including communication skills, logical reasoning and analytical ability, decisionmaking and problem-solving, general mental ability, basic numeracy and English language comprehension skills (of Class 10 level).

Longleng DC informs

C M Y K

lONgleNg, August 2 (MexN): The Deputy Commissioner for Longleng has informed that some government departments “have not developed and not even erected boundary pillars, fencing etc on site/land allotted to them” as per their requirement within government acquired land in Longleng HQ. A circular from the Longleng DC informed that the departments include the Superintendent of Excise, District Sports Officer, Urban Development Officer, District Evaluation Officer, Assistant Registrar of Co-operative Scoieties, Fishery Department, District Horticulture Officer, Veterinary department, District Project Offier, Land resource department, District Sericulture Officer, DRDA department, EO NKVIB department, Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection department and DIET. The DC informed that the land may be re-allotted to any other department “who come up for development on a first come first basis for systematic use of the land/area.”

Secretary of Against Corruption and Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) and EDBA President, Solomon L Awomi, who had been “detained” at the GPRN/ NSCN designated camp, Khehoi since July 31, was released on Saturday after signing a “bond agreement.” Details of the “bond agreement,” however was not released to the media. Speaking prior to the release of the ACAUT Secretary, GPRN/NSCN Kilo Kilonser, Hevukhu Yeptho informed that Solomon was being released on the request of the Naharbari, Purana Bazaar and Darogapathar village councils. “GPRN/NSCN would not have released him if ACAUT had requested but since it was the three villages, we are releasing him on humanitarian grounds,” he said. In a meeting involving GPRN/NSCN officials and representatives of the three villages, Solomon said that he has taken the incident positively and that he was not threatened, intimidated or harmed during his two nights stay at Khehoi camp. He informed that certain misunderstandings led to his “detention” but assured that everything re-

mained clarified. Solomon expressed appreciation to leaders of various organizations for their tireless efforts in ensuring his safe release. ACAUT seeks clarification Meanwhile ACAUT Nagaland has asked the GPRN/NSCN to divulge the names and details of the “public” who had complained against Solomon alleging his involvement in extortion related activities. ACAUT demanded to know the exact nature of the allegation against its Secretary. Addressing media persons in Dimapur, ACAUT said, “We want to know the reasons for his detention. Merely citing certain allegations and making the public a scapegoat is not ac-

ceptable to ACAUT.” It stated that the GPRN/NSCN should study whether any complaint it receives merits an explanation call. “Detaining a person on flimsy reasons for 2-3 days is a gross violation of human rights,” it added. ACAUT accused the GPRN/NSCN of setting a “dangerous trend” and interpreted the “detention” of its Secretary as a “psychological warfare on ACAUT.” The incident has caused immense mental torture to Solomon and has simultaneously put every ACAUT member in danger now, ACAUT stated. “From today onwards no ACAUT member will visit any camp (NPG camp) even if summoned. They (Naga groups) have to report to ACAUT

and we will take a collective decision whether to send that concerned person or not,” it affirmed. Regarding the April 24 ACAUT letter to all HoDs and DDOs cautioning against 24% salary deduction for NPGs, it affirmed that the letter still stands valid. It further urged state government officials from deducting 24% salary for NPGs and cautioned that ACAUT would take action and file a case against them with the police. Regarding its “de-recognition” by the GPRN/ NSCN, ACAUT said, “It’s their own problem, we have not come into existence seeking their permission and ACAUT is a mass movement.”

New Delhi, August 2 (MexN): The Nagaland state government has decided that NAP IR battalions “would not be re-deployed to the Maoist operation in Chhattisgarh.” Nagaland state Chief Minister, TR Zeliang informed the Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh of this decision in New Delhi on Saturday. The decision, according to a press note from the Chief Minister’s office, was taken “since there was huge casualty of Naga IR jawans while performing their duties at Chhattisgarh few years back and there is still high emotional attachment to the incident.” The CM, however, stated that the Nagaland state government would be willing to deploy IR battalions to any other states/ places besides Chhattisgarh as per the direction of the MHA. The CM further appreciated the Union Home Ministry for releasing Rs 60 Crores of the Security Related Expenditure (SRE) for Nagaland state. He however requested the Union Minister to direct the concerned department to expedite early release of SRE pending with Gol amounting to Rs 236.27 crores. Out of the pending SRE, the major component is from the West Bengal government against the deployment of NAP IR battalion which amounts to Rs 90.00 crores. In this regard, the CM urged the Union Home Minister to “adjust the pending dues to the state of Nagaland.” The pending salary of the village guards amounting to Rs 34.57 crores, construction of center paramilitary force accommodation at Rs 31.42 crores, pending subsidy of state run helicopter service and pending SRE for re-deployment of special NAP to Kashipur, UP during 1994 and to Delhi government in 1995 were also bought to the Union Minister’s notice.

Regarding the cost of “raising huge IR battalions,” the CM informed that the Government of India bears the expenditure only for the raising year for salaries and other allowances. He stated that the state government bears all the recurring expenditure and infrastructure requirement for the remaining years. He also indicated that compared to the pre-raising of IR battalion during 1999-2000, the total budget requirement for “recurring expenditure in respect of Police Department was only Rs. 157.75 crores. Whereas, the requirement during 2013-14 was Rs 944.79 crores, an increase of about 517%,” the statement said. The CM further informed that forming five of IR battalions i.e., 11NAP IR at Aboi, Mon District; 12 NAP IR at Chingtok, Longleng District; 13 NAP IR at Yachang, Mokokchung District; 14 NAP IR at Okhe-zeng, Kiphire District and 15 NAP IR Mahila at Medziphema, Dimapur District are under process. However he noted that due to non availability of resources, the state government was not able to complete the project. He urged the Union Home Minister to grant a “one time assistance to clear the pending dues and also to complete the projects.” He suggested that the MHA depute an officer to verify the ongoing construction of IR battalions and to consider the proposal. The CM further appreciated the Union Minister for appointing a new interlocutor for the ongoing peace talk between the Gol and NSCN (IM) and a new Director General of Police for Nagaland state. In response, the Union Minister “assured that he would look into the issues raised by the Nagaland CM,” informed the CMO office.

A press release from the PRO, Dimapur Police identified the arrested person as one Rashenlo Jishing. Jishing is the fifth person to be arrested in connection to the killing of nine persons, whose dead bodies were recovered at Pachaspura, Chumukedima on January 3, 2014. The vehicle – a taxi – was being driven by Jishing when the arrest occurred. Eight months on, total secrecy surrounds the probe of the murders with the SIT exceptionally discreet with information concerning the case.

DiMAPuR, August 2 (MexN): The Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) today stated that the “issue of alcohol and prohibition needs to be seen and understood correctly and wisely.” A press note from the NBCC expressed hope that the Nagaland state government “will do justice by dealing on the issue judiciously, which will have a positive impact on the society in the long run.” It stated that the “tendency of human beings to misuse alcohol and the consequences of misuse compel the Church, certainly NBCC, to consider prohibition too important a responsibility that it cannot be treated lightly.” While acknowledging the “limitations” and “inadequacies” of the church to “match the com-

plicated crisis,” NBCC however stated that it “cannot ignore the role the majority of its members expect it to play.” It added that the issue of prohibition involves various

The NBCC while asserting that the Liquor Prohibition Act “is not the property of the Church,” stated that “it was a response of the state government at a given time to the deteriorating crisis harming our society.” The Act, it said, represented the “long considered conclusion of the state government” for “protection and welfare of the people as it had perceived.” Full text on Page 4

Officials say they will be taken to Atlanta’s Emory University Hospital in a tightly sealed isolation unit. The first is expected to arrive Saturday, and the other a few days later, according to hospital officials.

Ebola Can Look A Lot Like Other Diseases The early symptoms of an Ebola infection include fever, headache, muscle aches and sore throat, according to the World Health Organization. It can be difficult to distinguish between Ebola and the symptoms of malaria, typhoid fever or cholera. Only in later stages do people with Ebola begin bleeding both internally and externally, often through the nose and ears.

Bihar govt sounds flood alert

PAtNA/KAthMANDu, August 2 (iANs): Bihar has issued an alert over likely floods in four districts and ordered evacuation of people after fears about a drastic rise in the water level of the Kosi river Saturday following a landslide that killed eight people in Nepal with mud and rocks crashing down and blocking a tributary of the river. The Bihar government issued an alert over likely floods in Supaul, Saharsa, Purnea and Madhepura districts in the Kosi region. Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said the government sounded the alert after massive landslides Friday night over one of the major tributaries of the Kosi river blocked the course of the main river in Nepal killing eight people and trapping many more. “As the landslide blocked the main course of the river and water ac-

cumulated there forming a massive water body, the Nepal Army is likely to blast the blockade, which is bound to cause an abrupt rise in the water level of the Kosi,” Chaudhary said. The state disaster management department has asked officials to start evacuation of people living near the embankments of the Kosi in the four districts.

“We have directed the district administrations to evacuate people and see that they don’t get trapped when the river level increases. Hundreds of thousands of people live in villages situated within the embankments of the Kosi,” said disaster management department special secretary Anirudh Kumar. Five teams of the National

Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and three teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have also been rushed to tackle any emergency in view of the floods. Meanwhile, a landslide Saturday morning killed eight people in Nepal, as mud and rocks came crashing down and blocked the Sun Kosi river. A small village was buried and at least 150 people were reported missing. Following the landslide around 2 a.m., the river formed a large lake in Sindhupalchowk district, about 60 km from Kathmandu. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday expressed concern over the blockage of the Kosi river in Nepal. “He (Modi) has directed that all possible help should be provided to the Bihar government and Nepal,” said a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office. First Nagaland chief minister memorial at Longjang village Mokokchung, August 2 (MExn): People of Longjang village showed sense of joy and pride on August 1 as Chief Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, Banuo Z Jamir inaugurated the P. Shilu Ao Memorial Monument. The first Chief Minister of Nagaland state, Shilukaba, better known as P.Shilu Ao, a native of Longjang village under Mokokchung district, located about 30 kilometers from the district headquarters died on September 19, 1988. Twenty-five years later, the monument in his memory was inaugurated at his burial site in a remarkably solemn yet ceremonial manner by the State’s first woman Chief Secretary. Interestingly, this was also the first time since statehood that a Chief Secretary had ever visited Longjang

village. The monument, measuring 600 square feet, was constructed at a cost of Rs.10 lakhs with the assistance of the State government. The construction committee of the monument expressed hope that the State government would adopt the site as a ‘state monument’. Earlier, on arrival at the village gate as the chief guest, the chief secretary and her entourage were accorded a warm welcome by the villagers accompanied by the resounding rhythm of beating of the log-drum. Her husband and former chief secretary Alemtemshi Jamir was the guest of honour. The entourage then proceeded to the Monument site where the chief guest formally unveiled the P.Shilu Ao Memorial. This was followed by a ceremonial inaugural programme organized by

the Longjang Reongsanger Cultural Club at the village Community Hall. The chief guest while addressing the villagers ex-

pressed admiration for the feats achieved and the sacrifices made by P.Shilu Ao. She recalled “how difficult the times were” when a few

men of the ilk of P.Shilu Ao came forward and laid the foundations for the statehood of Nagaland. She explained that the people of

Nagaland are today enjoying the benefits of statehood because of the sacrifices made by the pioneers. She also said that Naga

people must learn to recognize and honour their great persons for whose sacrifice the people benefit. She suggested that the Memorial be responsibly taken good care of as it is very significant. The chief secretary also took the opportunity to convey that both men and women have the same aspirations and expectations in life, that they are all equal, and women should be given equal opportunity, if not reservation, for representation in decision making bodies. If the first chief minister of Nagaland was from Longjang, let the first woman chief minister also come from Longjang, she challenged, commanding a thunderous applause from the crowd. She also exhorted the villagers to remain united. P.Shilu Ao was born

on December 24, 1916 at Longjang village. When the Naga People’s Convention was formed in 1960, he resigned from government service. He was then serving as a First Class Magistrate under the Assam government. He was the Chief Executive Councillor of the Nagaland Interim body from 1961 to 1963. With the attainment of Nagaland statehood in 1963, he was elected from Impur Assembly Constituency as a Member of Legislative Assembly in the first state election in 1964. He then became the first Chief Minister of Nagaland, from January 1964 till August 1966. He died on September 19, 1988 at the age of 72 after a prolonged illness at Dr.Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital, Mokokchung.

Sector. Paper recycling is the process of recovering waste paper and remaking it into new paper products. Industrialized paper making has an effect on the environment both upstream (where raw materials are acquired and processed) and downstream (waste disposal impacts). At present, 90% of paper pulp is made of wood.

Paper production accounts for about 35% of felled trees and represents 1.2% of the world’s total economic output. About 35% of municipal solid waste (before recycling) by weight is produced by paper and paper products. It is estimated that recycling half the world’s paper would avoid the harvesting of 20 million acres (81,000 sq. Km) of forestland. Re-

cycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 mature trees, 7 thousand gallons (26 m3) of water, 2 barrel of oil. It also saves 4100 kilowatt hours of electricity, enough to power average home for six months. Recycling paper also causes 35% less water pollution and 74% less air pollution when compared to producing virgin paper. In addition, it decreases the demand for virgin pulp

• It is estimated that 95% of business information is still stored on paper. • 115 billion sheets of paper are used annually for personal computers. The average web user prints 28 pages daily. • Most corrugated fiberboard boxes have over 25% recycled fibers. Some are 100% recycled fiber. • Although paper is traditionally identified with reading and writing, communications has now been re placed by packaging as the single largest category of paper use at 41% of all paper used.

militants ‘Mnp Govt trying to derail Repatriate refugees to Mizoram: Tripura Suspected arrested in Tripura About 35,000 Reang tribals are Indo-Naga peace process’ sheltered in seven camps located Tahamzam, augusT 2 (mExN): The United Naga Council has charged the Manipur Government of trying to derail the IndoNaga peace process on the pretext of law and order. This contention, UNC informed, was upheld by a unanimous house during the emergency Presidential Council meeting of the United Naga Council held on August 2 to review the highly vitiated situation arising out of the unprecedented militarization by the Government of Manipur (GoM) in Ukhrul town and Naga areas (decision announced). The Council meeting strongly condemned the disruption of public life, social functions and religious programmes and creation of an environment where the safety and security of the citizens are exposed to all possible violence that could be ig-

nited at the slightest unintended incident. “For the last 17 years of Indo-Naga ceasefire, there has been peace in Naga areas except for the GoM’s use of excessive violence on innocent students and public as exemplified by the May 6, 2010 incident at Mao Gate. The military incursion in the Ukhrul instance, speaks volumes of the malafide intent of the GoM’s action. In sharp contrast, the Disturbed Area Act has been conveniently lifted from 7 Assembly segments of the four Imphal valley districts, where hundreds of innocent mainland Indians (non-Meiteis), mostly labourers and petty businessmen have been killed and maimed under the very nose of the Chief Minister O. Ibobi of Manipur. Bombings and shootings are routine there and even the Governor and

Chief Minister’s official residence has been attacked several times,” a press release from the Publicity Wing of UNC stated. UNC further resolved that on completion of the civil actions already put in place, “democratic actions will be taken up in more intensive measures, should no interventions be forthcoming from the Government of India.” “While moving forward to secure our political aspirations, the GoM may adopt various malicious means to suppress the people’s peaceful and democratic movement, till such time we are freed from the forced union,” UNC warned and urged all tribal Hohos, frontal organizations and the Naga people in general to stand united and be prepared for an effective response to any eventuality.

agarTala, augusT 2 (IaNs): The Tripura government and a Lok Sabha member from the state have once again urged the central government to take steps to repatriate the 35,000 tribal refugees to Mizoram, officials said here Saturday. Lok Sabha member from Tripura and former rural development and industries minister Jitendra Chaudhury raised the issue in the Lok Sabha Friday and demanded their immediate repatriation to Mizoram. About 35,000 Reang tribals are sheltered in seven camps located in north Tripura for 17 years after they fled their villages in western Mizoram following clashes with the majority Mizos over the killing of a Mizo forest official. "The Tripura government has been repeatedly asking the central government to repatriate the refugees to Mizoram, but the

in north Tripura for 17 years following ethnic clashes

response especially from Mizoram is very poor," Tripura's relief and revenue department secretary Swapan Saha told reporters. He said: "The union home ministry has constituted a seven-member committee, headed by the ministry's additional secretary Rajiv Gauba to oversee the living conditions of the refugees in the Tripura camps." The central committee, comprising officials of human resource development ministry, social justice and empowerment ministry, Tripura government and representatives of three NGOs from New Delhi, West Bengal and Assam, will submit its report to the home minis-

try and the Tripura High Court by Sep 12. The central team was constituted following a directive from the Tripura High Court, which passed an order June 24 after a lawyer filed a writ petition before it. "The central team will visit the refugee camps before Aug 31 and supervise the sanitation, health, educational and other facilities there," Saha added. Meanwhile, talking to IANS over phone from New Delhi, Chaudhury said: "There were several initiatives to repatriate the refugees from Tripura to Mizoram but those failed due to lack of proper political will of both the central and the state governments.

Only sporadic repatriation of a handful of families have taken place." Only about 5,000 Reang tribal refugees, locally called "Bru", have returned to their homes in the past three-and-a-half years. Chaudhury said: "Though the families are surviving on two square meals and other minimum physical needs, extended by the central and Tripura governments, a permanent solution to the ethnic issue is needed so they can enjoy a better life. Chaudhury, a senior tribal leader, also demanded economic settlement of the refugees after their repatriation. An official of the Tripura relief department said the refugee leaders had told Supreme Court's Special Commissioner Harsh Mander that they will return to their villages if the Mizoram government provides them security and livelihood.

agarTala, augusT 2 (IaNs): Two suspected militants, including a police constable, have been arrested in Tripura and some incriminating documents and fake Indian currency seized from them, police said Saturday. "Acting on a tip-off, Assam Rifles troopers detained two suspected extremists from a house here Friday night. The paramilitary forces later handed over the duo to police," Milan Datta, police inspector, told IANS. He said: "Two mobile sets, fake Indian currency of Rs.1,000 denomination and leaflets of outlawed militant outfit NLFT (National Liberation Front of Tripura) were recovered from them." After arresting the suspected militants - Jyotish Debbarma and Indrajoy Reang - police Saturday presented them in a court which sent them to police custody for five days. Jyotish Debbarma is a constable in the Tripura Police and was posted as a house guard for a political leader.

ATSUM condemns Maram student assault Arunachal taking necessary steps to control JE spread ImPhal, augusT 2 (NNN): The All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) has vehemently condemned the physical assault meted out to Ringsanbou Newmai, a BA student studying in Don Bosco Maram, on July 28 by some local folks suspected to be underground cadres. "It is so frustrating to see that Maram centre a temple of learning has turned to a safe abode for carrying out anti elements in the name of safeguarding the boarders/hostellers who are lodged in different private run hostels," ATSUM stated. The tribal students' body also said frequent occurrence of infighting and physical assaults meted out to Maram college students by local goons at different point of time is not tolerable. "For any crime, penalty/punishment is awarded according to the nature of

crime. The village authority or local youth organisation for that matter is responsible to shoulder the functioning of governance at the grass root level as per the costmary laws and traditional practices. There is no customary law amongst the Naga tribes wherein a person under the influence of alcohol should be given a third degree method of torture for intruding others house without prior permission," ATSUM stated. The ugly episode of July 28, 2014 at Josephine Girls’ Hostel at Maram is not a case that cannot be left unattended by students’ bodies and civil organisations alike just for the simple fact that the warden/proprietor has taken the laws into one’s own hand. It is surprising that even after 5/6 days of committing a heinous crime; the victim’s family is yet to get

'Arunachal needs new tourism hotspots' ITaNagar, augusT 2 (TNN): Calling tourism an industry which can engage locals and minimize rural-to-urban migration, All Arunachal Pradesh Tour Operators' Association (Aaptoa) demanded that new tourist circuits be opened, existing ones be extended and sufficient funds be allotted to create tourism infrastructure in the state. Addressing the media here on Thursday night, Aaptoa general secretary Duyu Tamo said new tourist circuits can be created for Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts, He said, "This region has the potential to boost cultural and festival tourism." He also demanded the extension of existing tourist circuits such as Nacho-Limeking-Taksing, Tuting-Gelling-Singga and Miao-Vijaynagar. "The Union home ministry needs to include the Buddhist circuit in its national action plan. This

can attract more Buddhist tourists to this landlocked state," he said, adding that the Greenfield airport at Hollongi must be constructed immediately to increase tourist influx. To make the tourism department the state's highest revenue earner, Aaptoa president John Panye appealed to the government to release sufficient funds for better infrastructure. "To make tourists more comfortable, the government needs to better its infrastructure. Department officials, including DTOs and TIOs, should be wellequipped", said Panye. "People are aware of the potential of the state, but show poor participation. We have to include more stakeholders for the development of tourism and involve them in planning and policy making," he said. He added that the state government should conduct one mega festival instead of several small events.

any response from the runner of the hostel. Whereas the Union having visited the victim who is struggling for life at ICU of JNIMS and having gone through the medical report with severe internal injury with damaged liver, kidneys and intestine apart from multiple injuries such as broken jaws and ghastly wound all over the body, it is confirmed that the beastly act committed was an attempt to murder, ATSUM stated. Further, the union condemned the imposition of double penalty, coupled with physical assaults and imposing fine Rs. 5000/- for the release of the victim without issuing any notice of appraisal to the victim’s family. To this end, ATSUM appealed to the person running the hostel to come for an amicable solution before the situation turns volatile.

In an important announcement, the epidemiologist said that no vaccine will be effective during transmission season as it takes minimum one to two months to develop immunity to the virus and in outbreak season when the virus is virulent, these vaccines may not help. "Vaccination

gives a false sense of security and is not recommended by the government of India during the transmission, outbreak situation. It must be ensured that dispensaries maintain proper cold chain of 2-8 degree centigrade and sterile precautions are observed," Jampa said.

Jonas Yanthan

here is no second opinion to the fact that ownership of land and its resources is vested in the people as inherent from time immemorial in Nagaland context. In conformity with Naga customary ownership of land and its resources and way of life, the constitutional provision of Article 371(A), which acknowledged our Naga way of life, states that “Notwithstanding anything in the constitution, no act of Parliament in respect of religious or social, customary, administration of civil and criminal justice and ownership and transfer of land and its resources, shall apply to the State of Nagaland unless the Legislative Assembly of Nagaland by a resolution so decides” was enacted as the corner stone of Nagaland Statehood. In tune with the Article 371(A), the Parliament amended the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation, 1886 (Regulation 1 of 1886) in 1978 stating “Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in any law, usage, contract or agreement, no person (other than the indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland) shall acquire or posses by transfer, exchange, lease, agreement of settlement of any land in any area or areas constituted into belts or blocks in contravention of the provisions of Sub-Section (1)” in total confirmation of the constitutional provision. The above provisions amply makes crystal clear that the Tribes of Nagaland are the absolute owners of land and resources. The authority and political duty of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly is to study and decide whether any acts of Parliament, in regard to the mentioned provisions can be applied in Nagaland or not. It must be clear to all that the Article does not empower the State Assembly to enact laws, rules and regulations regarding land and resources in the State as it pleases. Therefore, by the fact that people are the sole owners of land and resources, they must be respected and given ample

opportunity for realizing their aspirations through their land. And by the fact that the government is not landowner but only a legal guardian should never act as a contractor or broker as it is behaving now. It must be also understood that no Chief Minister or Ministers must think that he or she is the government itself but must work as a role model, leader and defender of people’s rights. The State Government has no other choice but to work within the confines of the Article that protects theirs as well as the people’s rights. Not able to administer or function within this constitutional right is nothing but blockheadedness and inefficiency. The interpretation of the DAN Government that the Article 371(A) gives full power to the State Assembly in matters of legislation on land and its resources is utterly erroneous for the reason that the State Government is not the owner of land and resources. Any such legislation can be done only by ratification of the people. Nagaland Assembly’s authoritative duty is to work within the rights of the people only. The State politicians must understand that they are elected to protect the interest of the people and not connive with Companies to do business on the land and resources of the people. The function of the Legislative Assembly is to bring development and enact laws that protects and enhances the people’s welfare but not otherwise. Article 371(A) is the basis of the State and hence any elected member who thinks that customary ownership of land is a hindrance to development is not fit to be a leader. In the true spirit of Article 371(A), Nagaland Government’s first duty, in regard to resources, is to confide in the people about the issue by organizing awareness campaign, educating and sensitizing them as to what is going to come and how to go about. On the contrary, some Ministers and bureaucrats, in the P&NG began hobnobbing with companies for

their own share. This being the mentality, modalities on it and its rules and regulation 2012 was approved without any honest consultations and what followed was going ahead with implementation of its decision to launch by force despite people’s genuine protests. What a cowardly and brainless way to lead the Nagas! The State government may defend its position by saying that they had wide range consultative meet with Hohos and NGOs but regrettably their so-called State level consultations were held after the P&NG rules and regulations were passed in the Assembly and worse still the Government, in its first ever consultative meet held at Kisama, brazenly and treacherously attempted to demean the Nagas by trying to resolve that Naga ownership of land is only of the top soil. This is a glaring mockery to all Tribal Hohos, DBs and GBs of the State. The concern Chief Minister and his cabinet should have been taken to task in your Customary Court and punished severely. But alas! This could not take place because they were the participants of the meet that day. This is amazing. I hope the guardians of our customs and traditions will read the Government’s modality on P&NG and discern whether it is an insult or not to Naga customary right to land and resources. The State Government is the legal guardian but, to our dismay, there were no guardians to protect the innocent and gullible villagers of Changpang and Tssori from the onslaught of companies who went round luring them both in cash and kind. Rather than protecting the interest of the people, the Government went to the extent of dividing tribal Hohos and making Hohos as political wings with an aim to fulfill their vested interests. What a faceless government who cannot honor its responsibility as a legal guardian. Leave alone defending the innocent people from marauding companies; it is very unfortunate that the Chief Minister of Nagaland had forcefully launched the

Changpang oil exploitation and continues to even wrongfully defend MOGPL Company despite the serious allegations against it. Isn’t this proof of vested interest and arrogantly poor leadership? Petroleum or mineral issue is not a Lotha issue, as some may think so, but it is an issue of Naga Customary ownership of land and resources. Oil was struck in Lotha area first which prompted us to study in depth the modalities of the Government and found that it is against the spirit of Naga customary ownership rights because of which we rejected. As the Government gave an opportunity to all the Tribal Hohos to bring in their suggestions, Kyong Hoho came out with certain primary suggestions keeping in mind our custom and the benefit of the whole State but the Government was bent on its vested interest modality. What the government inserted in their modality was the name ‘Naga Oil’ taken from our suggestion. This faulty modality and rule of the Government is not for Lotha area alone but applicable for the whole State and hence needs to be thoroughly amended. Today the issue is oil but tomorrow it is going to be other mineral resources like gold, limestone, coal, precious stones etc located in various parts of the State and therefore all Tribal Hohos, Councils, NGOs and intellectuals of the State must come together and have thorough deliberations on the issue. The matter must not be left to our politicians or the Nagaland Legislative Assembly alone because we all know their caliber. They have proved not only their inability to handle matter of such importance but also exhibited their incompetence to deliver goods to the people. It appears that DAN’s leadership ability is only to blame the Article 371(A) as hindrance to development. It is time that Tribes of Nagaland wake up to this crisis and set right or be cursed by our generation as brainless and selfish.

Liquor Prohibition Act And The Society

A

decision on alcohol and whether or not Liquor Prohibition (Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act 1989) should prevail, touch deepest emotions. The reason is understandable. Alcohol’s attractive powers for diverse reasons are extremely strong and well known. Equally strong and well known are the deep rooted fears of its awesome power to mercilessly destroy all that life can and should mean and the resources to sustain life if the chemical is misused. The notorious tendency of human beings to misuse alcohol and the consequences of misuse compel the Church, certainly NBCC, to consider prohibition too important a responsibility it cannot be

treated lightly. The church knows its limitations and its inadequacies to match the complicated crisis. But it cannot ignore the role the majority of its members expect it to play. NBCC views prohibition with serious concern that the massive impact that commercially produced and marketed alcohol will make on our fragile society barely out of our traditional past will be too destructive mentally, spiritually and socially that will undermine our economic development and sound growth in all fields. The Church is of the view that the long term consequences cannot, must not, be set aside because of immediate pressures whatever they may be. The issue of alcohol and

Prohibition needs to be seen and understood correctly and wisely. Involved in the issue of prohibition are the following stake holders – the Nagas in Kohima, Dimapur and the district headquarters, the multinational alcohol industry, State Government, civil societies and the Church. The vast majority of the Nagas are in our villages. In all fairness they must not be drawn recklessly into the chaotic controversial crisis engulfing their people who have left for the towns. Their crisis with village-brewed alcohol wherever it is still used is being handled by them at the level vastly different from the one that is churning and raging away from the villages. The Liquor Prohibition Act is not

the property of the Church. It was a response of the State Government at a given time to the deteriorating crisis harming our society. It represented the long considered conclusion of the state government that passed the Act for the protection and welfare of the people as it had perceived. It is the aspiration of the Church that the Government will do justice by dealing on the issue judiciously which will have a positive impact on the society in the long run. “When left to itself, a society generally manages to come to terms with its favourite poison”. This observation by Aldous Huxley calls for proper understanding. Issued by: Nagaland Baptist Church Council

On Nagaland Special Development Zone

T

he ambitious Nagaland Special Development Zone is being opposed by all sections of the people, especially the people of the bordering foothill areas. This proposal is indeed very encouraging for the people of Nagaland but not for the land owners. A major portion of land had been encroachedbythemightyAssamese and illegal settlers and just a small stretch of cultivable land is now left which our forefathers had toiled with sweats, tearsandbloodforus. The state Government had just been a mere spectator during all those years while its citizens had been tortured, raped, killed etc etc. We, the people of this area had been so innocent, simple, naive and backward yet we are very hard working. But we are no longer backward and innocent as you think and we would not easily part away with our ancestral land on your false promises on the programs of "Nagaland Special Development Zone". Meanwhile, please be aware that there is

no land owned by Tribal Hohos and mass based civil societies in that area. The land in that stretch of the proposed NSDZ is solely owned by clans and individuals that had been inherited from our forefathers. Therefore, the State Government's very HIGH POWERED COMMITTEE should not go to the Tribal Hohos or mass based Civil Societies for intensive or extensive consultation. Government can modify and restructure the existing land ownership system or take away the ARTICLE 371(A) if it is an obstacle in your guise to grab lands or you feel that the land owners take undue advantage of the special rights enshrined in the clauses of the said Article. Your predecessors had promised a lot but did nothing. Many plots donated by individuals and clansmen mean for Govt: buildings and staff quarters have become their private property. They were so materialistic and have amassed immense properties and wealth and had

built Castles and Palaces all over the towns of the state and outside it. They have quenched their thirst and have drained the state. Did not they leave enough space for you to develop? You may get crores of rupees from the centre for this and that developmental projects and programs as your predecessors had done but not with our land. The foothill area is underdeveloped and it needs development. But the State Government should know that this area is developing and shall develop gradually. Government can aid us if you bear the moral responsibility to serve the people without any bias or discrimination because state's share of development in this part is so rare. However, we do not accept the implication of NSDZ in our area at any cost in lieu of this or that promises for development. We are ready to defend it. Meanwhile, the Government should not demean your people's voice. "If you people in power feel that you are the law, you should

not forget that you have been raised to that status by the people as well". Furthermore, if the state Government is so concerned of progress, employment opportunities and Industrial developmentinthestate, you should solve the Insurgency problem first. Constructing Industrial Sheds, Growth Centre etc. in every corners of the state is just wastage of public money. Which company do you think would come to invest in our state at this present scenario? Lastly, it is our humblest request to the elected representative of the foothill area to be cautious in your decision on this matter and to all the social leaders not to be wooed by this and that promises. You may be tempted or even intimidated. Please don't keep silent. There are lots of us to stand with you in times of your trouble. As stated above, there is no land owned by societies. So don't get bribed. There are thousands of watchful eyes. Wapang Ao Lingrijan, Dimapur

Jimmy Nelson Photographer Of Indigenous People

J

immy Nelson (Sevenoaks, Kent, 1967) started working as a photographer in 1987. Having spent 10 years at a Jesuit boarding school in the North of England, he set off on his own to traverse the length of Tibet on foot. The journey lasted a year and upon his return his unique visual diary, featuring revealing images of a previously inaccessible Tibet, was published to wide international acclaim. Soon after, he was commissioned to cover a variety of culturally newsworthy themes, ranging from the Russian involvement in Afghanistan and the ongoing strife between India and Pakistan in Kashmir to the beginning of the war in former Yugoslavia. In early 1994 he and his Dutch wife produced Literary Portraits of China, a 30 month project that brought them to all the hid-

den corners of the newly opening People’s Republic. Upon its completion the images were exhibited in the People’s Palace on Tiananmen Square, Beijing, and then followed by a worldwide tour. From 1997 onwards Jimmy began to successfully undertake commercial advertising assignments for many of the world’s leading brands. At the same time he started accumulating images of remote and unique cultures photographed with a traditional 50-year-old plate camera. Many awards followed. When he started to successfully and internationally exhibit and sell these images, this created the subsequent momentum and enthusiasm for the initiation of Before they Pass Away. These stunning portraits are part of a landmark project titled 'Before They Pass Away' by pho-

tographer Jimmy Nelson. The British photographer aimed to capture the lives and traditions of the last surviving tribes who have managed to preserve their traditional ways and customs within our increasingly globalised world. The epic portraits present these dignified inheritors of noble and age-old traditions in a proud spirit and in all their glory—a unique visual experience. This exquisitely photographed showcase for world tribal culture is not only a joy to look at, but also an important historical record. Nelson told CNN: "The whole idea is to make (the tribes) iconic. To give them the attention that we give ourselves in the developed world. "Africa is evolving the quickest in my opinion. It has lost the majority of its ethnicity and au-

thenticity. "I grew up in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Gabon and in Cameroon. I've been living for 45 years, and what I saw in my childhood is not there anymore." The mammoth project was not always an easy ride. One tribe refused to pose for photos and instead insisted he drink vodka with them. Nelson eventually agreed, got incredibly drunk and peed himself in a teepee. Before he knew it a herd of reindeer had trampled the teepee down, attracted by the salt in his urine. He told the Daily Mail: "At the beginning the Tsaatan people were absolutely livid. But by making a complete plonker of myself and becoming the laughing stock of the group, they finally began to open up."

Stunning portraits of the world’s most remote tribes

P

hotographer Jimmy Nelson spent three-and-a-half years document- Kalam ing vanishing indigenous cultures all over the world. The resulting photographs have recently been released in a voluminous book called Before They Pass Away. Here is a selection of his images.

Gauchos

Asaro

Nomadic and colorful horsemen and cowboys have wandered the prairies as early as the 1700s, when wild Cimarron cattle overpopulated the flatlands. In the 18th century, when leather was in high demand, Gauchos arose to clandestinely hunt the huge herds of horses and cattle.

The legendary Asaro Mud- tribes scattered across the highland plateau, live in small agrarian clans. men first met with the Western world in the middle of the 20th century. Goroka Kazakh

Tsaatan (reindeer people) are the last reindeer herders who survived for thousands of years inhabiting the remotest subartic taiga, moving between 5 and 10 times a year. Presently, only 44 families remain, their existence threatened by the dwindling number of their domesticated reindeer. Samburu The Kazakhs are the descendants of Turkic, Mongolic and Indo-Iranian tribes and Huns that populated the territory between Siberia and the Black Sea. They are a semi-nomadic people and have roamed the mountains and valleys of western Mongolia with their herds since the 19th century. Himba

The indigenous population of the world’s second largest island is one of the most heterogeneous in the world. The harsh terrain and historic inter-tribal warfare has lead to village isolation and the proliferation of distinct languages. A number of different tribes are scattered across the highland plateau. Chukchi The ancient Arctic Chukchi live on the peninsula of the Chukotka. Unlike other native groups of Siberia, they have never been conquered by Russian troops. Their environment and traditional culture endured destruction under Soviet rule, by weapons testing and pollution.

The Himba are an ancient tribe of tall, slender and statuesque herders. Since the 16th century they have lived in scattered settlements, leading a Maori life that has remained unchanged, surviving war and droughts. The tribal structure helps them live in one of the most extreme environments on earth. Huli

Drokpa Around 2,500 Drokpas live in three small villages in a disputed territory between India and Pakistan. The only fertile valley of Ladakh. The Drokpas are completely different– physIt is believed that the first Papua New Guineans migrated to the island ically, culturally, linguistically over 45000 years ago. Today, over 3 million people, half of the heteroge- and socially – from the Tibetoneous population, live in the highlands. Some of these communities have Burman inhabitants of most of Ladakh. engaged in low-scale tribal conflict with their neighbors for millennia.

The Samburu people live in northern Kenya, where the foothills of Mount Kenya merge into the northern dessert. As cattle-herding Nilotes, they reached Kenya some five hundred years ago, moving southwards along the plains of the Rift Valley in a rapid, all-conquering advance. Yali

The long and intriguing story of the origin of the indigenous Maori people can be traced back to the 13th century, the mythical homeland Hawaiki, Eastern Polynesia. Due to centuries of isolation, the Maori established a distinct society with characteristic art, a separate language and unique mythology.

One of the tribes inhabiting the Baliem Valley region, in the midst of the Jayawijaya mountain range of Papua Indonesia, is the Yali ‘Lords of the Earth’. They live in the virgin forests of the highlands. The Yali are officially recognized as pygmies, with men standing at just 150 cm tall. Vanuatu Settlement in the 85 Vanuatu islands dates back to around 500 BC. There is evidence that Melanesian navigators from Papua New Guinea were the first to colonize Vanuatu. Over centuries, other migrations followed. Nowadays, all the inhabited islands have their own languages, customs and traditions.

RT Kendall: ‘The Church is in a deep sleep’

A

Carey Lodge

uthor and preacher RT Kendall turns up at the restaurant where we're meeting out of breath – "I'm so sorry I'm late, I got caught up at my last interview. I've run all the way here from the tube," he pants, before realising that he left his wife of 56 years behind. With an eternal twinkle in his eye and a dry sense of humour (he insists that his initials stand for 'Right Theologian') RT is endearingly enthusiastic about his latest book – In pursuit of his wisdom. "People are saying it's my best book yet, but I think that about them all," he laughs, before suggesting that I describe him as "The best apostle since Paul...and the most humble since Moses". That sets the tone for the rest of the interview – he's refreshingly honest, incredibly quick-witted, and clearly passionate about pursuing God's heart. "Twenty years ago a lady who was deaf came up to me and said, 'Would you consider writing a book on wisdom?' Well, I hadn't thought about it and wasn't sure I could, but I've never forgotten it," he says. "But a couple of years ago it began to burn on me, and I just started writing it." Kendall's latest offering explores the subject of wisdom from a biblical perspective – he describes it as "the greatest gift" on offer to us from God. "All you have to do is look at the stupid mistakes people make – look how many ministers go wrong, how few finish well – they lack wisdom. This is what we need," he insists. "My definition is that wisdom is the

onah chapter 2 shows that on his wish Jonah got third demotion inside the sea. As he down deeper, the pressure of water increased and felt his end has come. Because he seems he was cut off from God forever. To his surprise he got final demotion inside the great fish’s belly. With breath problem, by drinking salty water, without food stuff, no light, lack of changing cloth, like in a solicit lavatory chamber Jonah found himself he was lived. Inside that fish’s belly Jonah repented and regained full consciousness. From the belly he prayed to the Lord his God (v. 1). Contrary to that inside the ship other passengers prayed to their god but Jonah slept. Even at the request of captain he did not pray. Yet lot fall on him but he did not confess his sin to God. Rather he requested the passengers to throw him in the sea. This was the first prayer he made after he run away from God. Out of his affliction he cried out to Lord and God answered him (v. 2). This verse shows that except from hell we can pray from anywhere God will answer us. Ironically a person can pray from hell but God will definitely not reply, so it will not make any sense. The God who answered him

presence of the mind of the Spirit, because you get what he wants – wisdom is knowing what to do next, and so if the Holy Spirit will show us what to do next and we follow it, we're less likely to mess up. "The trouble is, like Joseph and Mary ran ahead of Jesus and thought he was with them, and then they had to go looking for him, we can do that with the Holy Spirit – we run ahead of him, and think we're speaking in the Spirit when it's our own silly talk. "I've tried to make it clear I'm not writing a book because I've attained wisdom, [but because] I'm in pursuit of it." Despite it being so important, Kendall suggests that wisdom still carries the unfortunate nametag as "the gift that nobody wants". "I dare say, if you gave an invitation and say 'All who want the gifts of prophesy, miracles and healing, come down this aisle, and all those who want the gift of wisdom come to this aisle' – which do you think they'd choose? That's what I mean," he says. "It's first on the list and people just run right by it. It's an exaggerated statement [to say nobody wants wisdom], but people seem to be more interested in the spectacular gifts – prophesy and healing – and I like those things too, but I'd rather start out with what Paul says is number one, and I think it honours God to ask what he wants. "When Solomon asked for wisdom, and not long life, or wealth, God was so pleased that he said: 'Solomon for that I'm going to give you what you ask for, plus what you didn't ask for'. But the trouble with so many preachers today, especially in America, is that they preach health, wealth and prosperity. They're

saying: 'Seek after these things'. Well no, I say, seek after the Kingdom of God and his righteousness – that's wisdom." So how do we become wiser? "The main thing is to learn what grieves the Holy Spirit, and then don't do that," he says. "The Spirit is a very sensitive person. In Ephesians 4:30 it says: 'Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God'. 'Grieve' comes from a Greek word which means 'get your feelings hurt'. So the Holy Spirit is a person who's very sensitive, and when we speak of a person who's hyper-sensitive it's not a compliment, but like it or not, that's the way the Spirit is. He gets his feelings hurt so easily. "What's the main way we grieve the Spirit? It's by anger, bitterness, losing your temper, holding a grudge or unforgiveness, and when we grieve the Spirit it's kind of like the metaphor of the dove coming down on Jesus– when we grieve the Spirit, the dove leaves us. It's a metaphor – the Holy Spirit never leaves us – but we can lose the sense of his guidance, his presence, and when that happens we're devoid of wisdom. "If we want wisdom, the only way is for the dove to come down and give us the presence of his mind and show us what to do. And if we're quiet and don't rush, he'll tell us things. I believe God will do that today, and when we obey him we won't mess up, we won't get it wrong." Kendall is also keen to highlight the idea of 'concealed wisdom' which he spends an entire chapter of his book exploring. It's the idea of wisdom that's not apparent, for example, doing things which look odd to everyone around you.

Running toward God preserves Yumri Taipodia inside great belly might surely respond him if he prayed. Who know the situation may be aborted and he might not have been thrown at the heart of the sea. However he was at the stages of demotion. Whenever a person turn his back to God it is hard for him to return till he enters in last demotion. Jonah blamed to God for casting him inside the sea (v. 3). Paradoxically it was not God who cast Jonah in the sea only at the request of Jonah the passengers cast him into the sea (1: 12). Incongruously, those fellow passengers also, to save their life including Jonah, did not immediately carry out Jonah’s advice. They didn’t even scold him but rowed hard although it brought no fruitful result. They confessed before YHWH to not charge them for throwing Jonah. Again Jonah is imputing guilt to God for casting him out from His sight as well as holy temple (v. 4). But it is untrue since He never cast out anyone who comes under His wings. As Jonah run away from God that made long dis-

tances between them which ultimately led himself to cast out from God’s sight. The holy temple mentioned here show that temple still existed there. So this incident was before the exile. At the last stages of his life Jonah turned toward holy temple. As the water surrounded the fish, he literally felt it, even to the soul (v. 5). He claimed he went down to the very foundation of mountain (v. 6). Oldest and highest mountains are inside the ocean. We don’t know how deep fish swam by carrying Jonah. The fish might swim deeply to vomit him in the Nineveh sea shore. It means Jonah went to the very foundation of the mountain. But it was God who brought him up. When his soul fainted within himself he remembered the Lord and his prayer went up to the holy temple (v. 7). The prayer of broken hearted people brings quick result. Jonah says those who regard worthless idols forsake own mercy (v. 8). He got experience in the ship that fellow passenger were pray-

"Take Mordecai in the book of Esther," says Kendall. "When the King puts Haman in charge and everyone bows to him but Mordecai just sits there – it's like 'Mordecai that's not smart, don't be dumb. This guy's important' – and it doesn't bother him at all, he just looks the other way. That doesn't look like wisdom to me, but it's wisdom concealed. There was a plan, and it ends up changing the whole life of the Jews. "Another example of concealed wisdom is Good Friday – Jesus on a cross. You say: 'That's the way God's going to save the world? I don't think so. Dumbest thing I ever saw – if that's the Son of God, why would God let his Son do that?' It's concealed wisdom. See what I mean? Look for the examples. God said to Abraham: 'Sacrifice your son' – people would have been like 'You call that wisdom? I don't think so'. "You can be clever and not wise. Wisdom will never leave you ashamed – but you can be brilliant and be a total fool." Finally, a challenge for everyone. What does RT Kendall think God might be saying to the global Church at the moment? "Two things," he responds immediately. "One: it seems to be that there has been a silent divorce in the Church between the Word and the Spirit. And when there's a divorce, sometimes the children stay with the mother, and sometimes they stay with the father. "In this divorce you have those that are on the word side – like Westminster Chapel, All Souls [Langham Place], St Helen's [Bishopsgate] – and then on the Spirit side you have Kensington Temple, Holy Trinity Brompton and St Michael le Belfrey [in York].

ing to their god and goddess. But they were not able to save them because they are made by man. Being as Hebrew perhaps he remembered Ten Commandments. Jonah decided to gave Him thanks (v. 9). He thanked God for saving him from drowning. In thanksgiving he used various phrases from the psalms. Jonah still had no idea how he will return to the world of mankind. Yet in confidence he offered the thanks for his salvation, even though it was still not complete. Jonah was vomited onto sea shore of Nineveh (v. 10). He was saved to fulfill to carry out Lord Instruction. He is now repented and ready to call others to repent. Like Jonah, we too are chosen of God to be His people and His witness. Similar to Jonah, we are commissioned by God. Akin to Jonah, many of us were disobedient to God. While Jonah was inside the fish’s belly he regretted and cried to the Lord; while we are here we too need to repent and weep before the Lord. As a result Jonah was saved, so we too will be preserved. Stop needing to be liked... five lessons in becoming a servant leader

T

he word 'servant' appears a lot in the New Testament. It and its derivatives are mentioned more than 100 times. Often leaders are called to pursue a servant 'shape' in the way they live out their calling. The trouble is, it's so familiar that it becomes easier to note down than to live by. Here are five lessons I've learned about how to fully and richly embrace the mentality of becoming a servant leader. 1. Empty your 'self' Paul pointed out to the Philippians that part of the essential character of Jesus' servanthood was the 'emptying' of self. For Jesus this involved putting aside his divine status and power, embracing struggle and opposition and, ultimately, letting go of life itself. This 'emptying' is not just a call to humility. It has more bite. It is a call to eschew self-ambition, prominence and even reputation. In a culture that is very focused on our 'rights', it means that we have to be careful not to embrace expectations which are, at the end of the day, born of this world rather than the kingdom. For Jesus, it meant emptying himself of any expectation that he would be liked. It meant that his plans and ambitions could only be those of the Father (remember his Gethsemane prayer?). It meant that he would be misunderstood – even by his own family. For us, it might mean emptying ourselves of career expectations. For some, that might mean not being invited into senior leadership positions. For others, it challenges us to let go of the ambition to be a 'platform speaker', to lead a large church or to be an author/broadcaster. Of course, the call to 'empty' ourselves of all that is self-centred is not so that we might be impotent in ministry – rather that we might then be filled daily with the Spirit.

John Dunnett

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45) "through love serve one another" (ESV). What is interesting is how love is identified in this statement as the root or source of service. Richard Foster put it this way in Money, Sex and Power: "How do spiritual leaders serve their people? They serve them by compassionate leadership. People do not need someone who will stand over them and pontificate in authoritative tones about the meaning of life. They need someone who will stand with them and share their excitement, their confusion, their hurt. People need leaders who love them." In his book On Leadership, Allan Leighton (ASDA, BSkyB and Royal Mail) argues that good customer service comes "from the heart, not a text book". And while the Church is not a business and people are not 'customers', it is fascinating to note Leighton's recognition of the place of the heart! The problem is that people are not always easy to love. If you're part of a church leadership team, why not systematically pray for all those on your address list or electoral roll? My own experience is that it is impossible to pray for somebody and not know the love of God released towards them in your own heart.

feet of his disciples. This was a regular, ordinary, even mundane part of daily life in the dusty first century Middle East. What impresses me is that John chronicles this vignette as following his raising of Lazarus and the words: "before Abraham was, I am". In other words it's the One who gives life to the dead and claims divinity who is washing feet. Jesus knows His status – and yet thinks to reach for a towel. In the discussion between Jesus and his disciples that follows, Jesus makes the connection between servanthood and the example he has given them. Those of us who are leaders, ministers, and preachers often find ourselves centre stage or at the front serving others. However, if we are to follow Jesus' example, it's also worth asking: when do we do the ordinary, the mundane, and the routine? When did we last offer to wash up coffee cups or set up the chairs? When did we last think to offer someone a lift?

4. Pray like an under rower In 1 Corinthians 4 Paul gives us an insight into his self-perception: "This, then, is how you ought to regard us: as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the mysteries God has revealed." The word that we translate as 3. Reach for the towel 'servant' would be better translated as If the cross is a sign of submission, 'under rower'. The task of the under 2. Love people, even the difficult ones the towel is a sign of service. In John 13 rower in a first century galley ship was In Galatians 5:13 Paul implores us: Jesus picks up a towel and washes the only possible if he kept his eyes fixed on

the one shouting 'pull'. If you failed in that gaze you would be out of time with the other rowers – and probably severely punished for it. The servant takes his/her orders from the master. And while I'm sure you'd agree with me that we are all aware of the daily challenge to be nudged and steered by the Holy Spirit, it is all too easy to pray: "Lord, bless what we're doing" instead of, "Lord, instruct us in our doing". That's the prayer of the under-rower. It's a prayer that indicates willingness for the Lord to call the shots. Maybe Philip prayed this kind of prayer and that's why he ended up in the desert leading the Ethiopian to faith. Maybe it's why Paul didn't get sidetracked into Bithynia (Acts 16). And maybe it's a prayer for all of us who are leaders to pray each day. 5. Avoid the pothole of self-righteous service Self-righteous service is that which requires external rewards. It is the kind of serving that feels good because other people see and appreciate the effort. It warms to human applause – with appropriate religious modesty of course! It is not the kind of service that is content in being hidden. True service is content with divine approval only. There have been times over the years when I have thought: "I wish someone could see what I am doing – for the Lord of course – right now". That's self-righteous service. And it is in stark contrast to the mentality that knows that his eyes are the only eyes that matter. One of my favourite Bible verses is Matthew 25:23. I hope that – one day – I might hear Jesus speak those same words to me: "Well done, good and faithful servant!" In that instant it will be apparent that all the other commendations, applause and affirming words are of little consequence. Rev John Dunnett is general director of CPAS.

"Now that's an over simplification, and it's an unfair analysis – but I'm using them as examples so you get the point, because I'm sure at HTB they preach the Word and so on, and so it's not black and white. That said, if the Word and the Spirit were to come together like in the book of Acts where they not only preached the gospel but saw healings, not only worshipped at the Lord table but they saw miracles and heard God speak directly, the combination would result in spontaneous combustion. A revival that would shake Britain would take place. "Second thing, I think, is that at the moment the Church is in a deep, deep sleep. It's like the middle of the night. And Jesus said "At the time of the last days the Kingdom will be like 10 virgins, five wise, five foolish, and bridegroom will come while they all slumbered'. I think that's a prophesy of what the Church will be like in the very last days, and so I think the Church is in a deep sleep right now. "The last thing they're expecting is the call that will wake them up in the middle of the night – in Matthew 35:6 it says 'At midnight', which is a word that we tend to think means 12 o'clock, but the Greek is 'middle of the night', so in the middle of the night, metaphorically speaking, when the church is not expecting any kind of wake up call, they're going to get it. And I think it's going to happen any day – no one's expecting it. It'll be like September 11, 2001 – in hours the whole world knew. It'll be like that." "The Church is powerless. Nobody is afraid of the Church today – it doesn't bother them. But when the cry comes in the middle of the night, that'll change."

WHO IS MY NEIGHBOUR?

T

Selie Visa Dimapur

he Parable of the Good Samaritan: An expert of the law approached Jesus and asked, "What must I do to inherit eternal life?" (Luke 10:25). Rather than giving him a straight answer, Jesus asked him what was written in the Law. The lawyer replied correctly, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and love your neighbour as yourself." (Luke 10:27) However the lawyer asked a second question, "Who is my neighbour?" (Luke 10:29) Instead of giving a direct answer, Jesus replied by telling him the story of the Good Samaritan. A traveler going from Jerusalem to Jericho came upon thieves. They took his clothes, beat him and left him for dead. The man lay there, desperately in need of help. He was passed by two people who were expected to help, a priest and a Levite, religious leaders of the day. If anyone was going to help a dying man, it would be them. But in this case both of them avoided the man and passed by on the other side of the road. Later a Samaritan came he bound up his wounds, took him to an inn, and made sure he was cared for until fully recovered. Note: Under Saul, David and Solomon, from 1050-930 B.C. Israel had been a united kingdom. But after these three kings Israel was divided into two, the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the Southern Kingdom of Judah. In 722 B.C. Sargon the king of Assyria captured the Northern Kingdom. Many Israelites were carried away as captives. People of other nations came and settled in Samaria. Intermarriage took place and this resulted in a mixed race. The mixed people came to be called Samaritans. Their religion was also corrupted by idol worship which was introduced by the outsiders who settled in Samaria. The Jews despised the Samaritans. As centuries passed by, the Jews and the Samaritans moved farther and farther apart and then they became hostile enemies. There might have been open war between them during the time of Jesus. But the entire province was under Romans rule and they were afraid of the Romans. Jews considered the Samaritans as spiritually unclean. Jews will not use or touch any article that belongs to the Samaritans. Jews will not walk in the land of the Samaritans. If they are compelled to set foot on the land owned by a Samaritan, they will take off their shoes and shake off the dust as soon as they have crossed over it. The road from Jerusalem to Jericho was dangerous. It was narrow and rocky with sharp turnings. It was the perfect hunting ground for robbers and brigands. People traveled in convoys for safety. Even in the 1930's people were warned to get home before dark because of a certain Abu Jildah who rob travelers and escape before the police arrived. So, in a way the traveler was foolish in traveling alone and has only himself to blame for what happened to him on the road to Jericho. After telling the parable, Jesus asked the lawyer, "Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?" (Luke 20:36). The lawyer answered correctly that it was the Samaritan that had truly been a neighbor unto the man. Jesus told him that he should go and conduct himself in a similar way. The meaning of “neighbour” which we learned from the parable of the Good Samaritan: 1. Any man of any nation who is in need is our neighbor. It is not the geographical location or living next door that makes one a neighbor. 2. We are to help even those who brought trouble upon themselves instead of thinking they got what they deserved. 3. The priest and the Levite must have felt pity on the wounded man. But that is not enough. Real compassion must issue in action. Who are our neighbours today? Holdup victims, testifying in a court of law fearlessly for the sake of justice, victims of accident or natural disasters, the drunkards, the drug addicts, people dying of hunger due to poverty, girls and women in the sex trade due to compelling situations in their lives, people with incurable diseases like HIV/ AIDS, orphans and those neglected by the society. We are called to minister to people’s spiritual needs but at the same time we must not be insensible toward their other physical difficulties and needs. In doing these noble things we may not be appreciated by the world or by our beneficiaries, but to be a good neighbour to another person in need, who too is the image of God just like you and I, is itself our reward.

Doubts surface about Modi after deal scuppered

NEW DELHI, August 2 (REutERs): Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to office with a reputation as a business-friendly leader ready to open up one of the world’s biggest markets and sweep away the remnants of the country’s socialist past. Now potential investors, some of them foreign firms hoping to exploit new opportunities in India’s vast consumer market, are scratching their heads after Modi’s party walked away from a major deal to reform customs rules and make global trade easier. India shocked trade officials by rejecting the agreement at the 160-member World Trade Organization, one of the group’s biggest initiatives since it was set up 19 years ago. New Delhi has since said it did not believe the pact was dead, but insisted that, alongside the so-called trade facilitation agreement, the WTO must find a deal allowing India to subsidise and stockpile food in order to protect the poor.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, visiting New Delhi for an annual strategic dialogue between the world’s largest democracies, told Modi on Friday that by blocking the trade pact, he was sending negative signals. “The failure to sign the (WTO) agreement undermined the very image Modi is trying to send about India,” a U.S. State Department official quoted Kerry as telling the 63-year-old in a meeting otherwise described as “strong and positive.” It was a rare veto from India, a country that has long espoused the cause of global trade reform, and was one that observers said could be wielded more often as the Modi administration sticks to its nationalist roots. Whether in foreign affairs or trade, Modi will pursue an “India-first policy” in a way Congress governments that ruled for most of India’s independence did not, senior members of his party said, apparently unfazed by global criticism. “We will not compromise

that his economic advisers had trained their guns on during the campaign, Modi’s first budget carried piecemeal measures on liberalisation in the insurance and defence sectors. “The message that India’s action on the trade facilitation agreement indicates is a black mark against being the investment-friendly, more business-friendly environment that one was hoping this government was going to seek,” said U.S. National Association of Manufacturers vice president of international economic affairs, Linda Dempsey. “It makes foreign investors a bit more skittish about what they are going U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry shakes hands with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj, right, and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker stand by their sides at Modi's residence in New Delhi, to expect out of the new government.” India on August 1. Kerry is on a three-day visit, his first following the resounding election win of Modi in May. (AP Photo) on national interest,” said Jayant Sinha, a lawmaker from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “That is the way (a previous BJPled) government operated between 1998 and 2004 and this is how this government will operate,” he told Reuters.

“Shining India” The BJP has described that period as “Shining India”, when it carried out nuclear tests and declared the country a nuclear-armed state, in the face of international condemnation. By twinning a trade deal with food security, the BJP

may also have an eye on India’s vast rural community comprising more than two-thirds of the country’s 1.2 billion people, among whom the support system is generally popular. Coming from Modi, who fashioned himself more as a chief executive

during the election campaign than a politician, the WTO rejection was a second jolt for investors in less than a month after a federal budget that left many of them cold. Instead of unleashing a second generation of market reforms and slashing welfare spending

‘Our educational system broken somewhere’ Indians safe, less than 10 percent NEW DELHI, August And the rest is history. As a modes of teaching are want to return: Libyan Ambassador 2 (IANs): Celebrated writ- writer, he raised the bar by evolving and Bhagat has er Chetan Bhagat feels that the college cutoffs should not bog one down because hard work can also take people places, adding that the country’s education system is “broken somewhere”. “A student securing 98 percent is no less capable or intelligent than the one securing 99 percent. The emphasis on cut offs every year just goes on to show that the educational system is broken somewhere,” Bhagat, an IIT-Delhi and IIM-Ahmedabad alumnus, told IANS in an email interaction from Mumbai. One should not feel dejected after being rejected, as there is a place for everyone, Bhagat believes. “Students can survive even without securing the highest cutoff because that definitely does not set the standard of the quality of education he or she has been getting since childhood,” said the 40-year-old. Equipped with the best qualifications, he enjoyed a high-profile banking job for 11 years, but decided to move away from number crunching to writing.

churning out bestsellers like “Five Point Someone”, “The 3 Mistakes of My Life”,and “2 States” and most of his novels have been adapted into successful movies. “I believe hard work can take people to places. I have IIT and IIM degrees, but currently in my scope of work in Bollywood, the degrees are irrelevant. “My work speaks for itself and that’s how it should be for people in the professional world,” said Bhagat, who penned the screenplay for Salman Khan-starrer “Kick”, which has crossed the Rs.100 crore mark at the box office. As a father too Bhagat would never compel his twins - Ishaan and Shyam - to follow in his footsteps. “Honestly, it would give me enormous joy to see my kids to be a part of IIT and IIM. But they are free to choose a career of their choice as long as they are happy. As a father I will completely support their choices,” said Bhagat, who is married to his college classmate Anusha. Amidst the traditional education system, new

teamed up with DTH-provider Tata Sky to promote its “TV Is Good” campaign. “As a parent I am very well aware of the fact that kids today are exposed to a lot of content on television as well as on the internet, some useful, some harmful, as compared to the past,” he said. Sometimes it is difficult for a parent to keep a tab on the content that is accessible to their kids. “But at the same time, if they are guided well by parents to experience the right content, kids can actually end up grasping a lot more than the limited knowledge that they are exposed to in schools,” he added. A picture can tell a thousand words and visual learning can equip children for bigger goals in life. “Visual learning has greater impact than text book learning as children are more receptive to things they witness visually. While books prepare the children in subjects like maths and science that help them secure a job, the learning required to win in life is not limited to these books,” he said.

NEW DELHI, August 2 (IANs): Less than 10 percent Indians living in Libya have expressed a desire to leave the country and that demonstrates there is “no serious threat to their safety,” Libya’s ambassador to India Ali Al-Isawi said Friday. He said that the North African country was “committed” to provide “any kind of help” to Indian nationals, as weeks of intermilitia fighting in Libya’s capital Tripoli and Benghazi spiral alarmingly, leaving more than a hundred dead. “Regarding the state of Indians in Libya, I can assure you that they are safe,” Al-Isawi said in an interview to IANS here. When asked about India’s mission in Tripoli advising Indians to leave the strife torn country, Al-Isawi said the wish of Indian nationals will be respected. “The request for returning back (to India) came from less than 10 percent of total number of Indians living in Libya. It is a clear indication that they are safe. We are working closely with the Indian government to give any facility to Indians, to either ensure their safe stay in Libya or facilitate their

departure to India,” Al-Isawi stated. Prior to the civil uprising in Libya in 2011 that brought an end to the rule of Muammar Gaddafi, the number of Indians engaged there was estimated to be more than 18,000. Most of them were evacuated but few hundred Indians continued to serve in Libya even during the revolution period. At present, about 6000 Indians are said to be living there. AlIsawi said that India had insisted more staff be sent to the Indian embassy in Libya, a request he happily obliged with visas. He said the security situation in Libya has not affected the democratic process in the country and the new parliament will be convened on Aug 4 as had been announced earlier. He said the evacuation of diplomatic personnel from Libya by the United Nations and many other countries, including the US, which also closed its embassy in Libya, should not be seen as an absence of support from the international community. Al-Isawi added that the number of people leaving the

border has now “decreased by 50 percent.” He contended that Libya’s diplomatic ties with western countries remain strong in the wake of internal disturbances. The violence in Libya is an outcome of quarrelling between different armed groups. He said that reports of Libyan Islamists seeking to align with Al-Qaeda affiliates or the Islamic State Organisation, which has seized swaths of territory in Syria and Iraq, have to be taken with a grain of salt. “The international community showed their support to the democratic process, but mechanism for doing that was not established between the Libyan government and the international community.” He said the new constitution will pave way for a constitutional social contract between different categories of the society. “The constitution will be ratified by no less than two-thirds of Libyans. This will bring a degree of unanimity to important matters of politics and economy, and the more complex question of how to accommodate the Sharia law,” the ambassador said.

Maharashtra’s worst landslide claims 82 lives PuNE, August 2 (IANs): Maharashtra’s worst landslide disaster in Malin village of Pune district has claimed the lives of 82 people, half of them women, officials said here Saturday. Another estimated 130 villagers are still trapped or missing. “We have recovered 82 bodies so far... Rescue work is still underway,” Additional District Collector Ganesh Patil told IANS. Among the dead are 42

women, 30 men and 10 children, he added. Since Friday morning, no survivors have been dug out, dimming all hopes of any more victims being extricated alive from the debris. Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other agencies have rescued 23 people till now, including the youngest - a three-month old male child from under the debris in the past

three days. The village with around 200 people was almost entirely buried under a landslide early Wednesday following torrential rain. Inclement weather conditions, wet, sticky soil and the stench from the decaying bodies of humans and animal carcasses are hampering rescue operations. NDRF officials Friday ruled out the chances of finding any

more survivors as their gadgets did not indicate otherwise. The rescuers are making arrangements to cremate the bodies as soon as possible after completing the relevant formalities. They are also spraying chemicals in the area to prevent the outbreak of any disease. The rescue operations, including efforts to trace more than two dozen students who took shelter in the village temple

and were reportedly washed away in the adjacent flooded river, will continue till Sunday, officials said. This has made the Malin tragedy the worst landslide disaster in the state. In Mumbai, the Maharashtra government announced aid of Rs.5 lakh to the kin of each of the dead, free medical treatment to all the injured and complete rehabilitation package for the survivors.

Virtual friendship in, personal connect out August 3 is Friendship Day NEW DELHI, August 2 (IANs): Time was when Friendship Day meant hanging out with buddies and wearing colourful friendship bands. But now virtual connect through forwarded messages or mobile app stickers or a simple post on a friend’s wall of a social networking site overshadows the personal touch and people’s socialising skills. Easy-to-access internet without pinching your wallet and mobile app’s fun stickers expressing your emotions have made many people connect with one another, but mostly on a superficial level, say experts. “Friendship bands have become old fashioned. Now, there is WhatsApp, Instagram where you can post your photos with your friends. Virtual friends are more now,” Nidhi Shar-

ma, a stylist, told IANS. There was paucity of time earlier too, but now technology has made people lazier and as a result, personal meetings have reduced - thus affecting the quality of friendship. The dilemma is that people feel closer by connecting through apps, but they are actually drifting away. “You have internet on phone, work space and don’t have to take out extra time to stay in touch with people. Now, people would rather use WhatsApp or do video chat or send pictures. You are becoming closer because of technology, but it has become more superficial,” Harsheen K. Arora, a psychologist, told IANS. Davistine Liddle, a 30-year-old online marketing professional, agrees that a busy schedule keeps

him away from meeting his friends regularly and that technology helps to stay connected. But, yes, he misses that personal touch. “I stopped buying gifts for friends after I finished school. Now, it’s more about WhatsApp, Facebook and Hike messenger. The stickers are pretty interesting. People have become busy and all these sites and apps help to remember their birthdays or know what’s happening in their lives. “Personal meetings have reduced and I miss that, but most friends are working in different locations, so that gets tough,” he said. Consultant psychiatrist Rajiv Mehta describes the new friendship trend as “shallow”. “There are some who are active on social networking sites or mobile apps as they are following others blindly. They feel that everybody is doing so

and should follow them. Lack of time and effort have also made people turn to virtual friends. “So, close friendships are not there. Earlier friendship used to mean a lot. People used to take a decision on the basis of friendship. Now, it’s becoming shallow,” said Mehta. Apps and social networking sites are also taking people away from reality. Raman Suri, a life strategist and success coach, says people are now living in a “fancy land” and the fascination for social networking sites and apps is nothing more than an addiction. “All these sites are designed in a way that people get addicted to them and they are living in a fancy land where they feel that if they send a friend request to a stranger and that stranger accepts, they become friends in reality. That doesn’t happen,” said

Suri. It’s time for a reality check. “There are friends on social networking sites, but when you meet them in person you get different energy...We are living our life on autopilot mode. It is easier for robots to lead a virtual life rather than a realistic one,” said Suri. The virtual medium has affected people’s confidence to socialise in the real world. “People want to save time but the more time they spend on sites and apps the more they lose confidence of meeting people. It has now become a choice not to meet and rather send a message. It’s all about living in the virtual world,” said Suri. “For people who have a fear of public speaking, emotions help because you can express yourself by exchanging smileys but in person it gets difficult,” Suri added.

The consequences are worse for the younger generation as for them expression of emotions and articulation of thoughts become tough. “Children as young as 10 start using such sites and apps. They won’t know how to communicate face-toface. The older age group (above 25) has passed all that; so there’s not much to worry,” said Mehta. Arora also warns children, especially teenagers, against over-indulgence in virtual friendship. “They don’t have a sense of responsibility at that age. They may not understand or develop a trait of making real friends or having an emotional connect with someone,” she said. Technology certainly helps to bridge the gap, but maintain a balance and make sure to grab a cup of coffee with your friend whenever you get the time.

Driven From The Top There is little doubt that Modi has been at the centre of this week’s WTO saga and other key policy decisions. Days after he returned from a BRICS summit in Brazil last month, he summoned two top ministers to his house to final-

ise India’s position on the trade facilitation deal. There were no aides present at the July 22 meeting, where Modi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Trade Minister Nirmala Sitharaman took the decision to oppose the pact unless there was movement on food security. Until then, Indian officials had not explicitly linked the global trade agreement to their concerns over the lack of progress on the food security pact. India wanted an assurance because it had been “pushed to the wall”, one official said on Thursday. The Modi administration had been distancing itself from the Bali agreement last December, when the groundwork for the trade facilitation agreement was laid, in the last few weeks. It also criticised the previous government for signing up to Bali, because it said it was not explicit on food security. “The developed world’s priorities are clear. But we won’t back off from pushing ours,” the official said.

Infrastructure

needs public-private partnerships: President KoLKAtA, August 2 (IANs): President Pranab Mukherjee Saturday said India’s growth story was only unfolding and the private sector, including overseas investors, had much to look forward to in areas like infrastructure that need billions of dollars of investment. “The Planning Commission had earlier estimated that investments in infrastructure will have to expand to as much as $1 trillion in the 12th Plan period (2012-2017) to enhance connectivity and commerce within the country,” the president said. “There is no doubt that the majority of this enormous investment will have to come from the private sector or through public-private partnerships,” he told the annual general meeting of Indian Chamber of Commerce here. Mukherjee said that education, especially at the higher, technical level, as also skill development were areas that needed greater attention. “For India to be a progressive nation, we not only need high GDP growth, but also sound educational and health-care systems which will make growth sustainable and inclusive,” he said. “We also require sound skill development programmes and infrastructure to create a pool of skilled professionals who can take on the challenges of tomorrow.” The president said a growth of 8-9 percent was necessary to address poverty in India and for that the gap between the domestic savings and investments would have to be bridged. “To meet such investment requirements, the role of investment surplus countries have to come into play. I’m glad that the government is fully aware of this. It has taken some appropriate steps in this regard.”

Woman bobbitises exorcist PAtNA, August 2 (IANs): An unmarried Bihar woman chopped off an exorcist’s genitals when he attempted to rape her, police said Saturday. Though the incident happened last month, the woman herself lodged an FIR at a women’s police station in Madhepura Friday, a district police official said. She told police the exorcist, a close relative, repeatedly molested her under the guise of curing her after she fell ill last month. The woman’s mother had consulted him, said police officials. The exorcist also threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed anything to anyone. “She told police when he called her to his house one day, she went there armed with a knife and a mobile to record the conversation. When he tried to rape her, she chopped off his genitals,” a police official said. The exorcist ran away from the spot and is still absconding.

Bihar orders evacuation over floods in Kosi region PAtNA, August 2 (IANs): Bihar Saturday issued an alert over likely floods in Supaul, Saharsa, Purnea and Madhepura districts - in the Kosi region - and ordered evacuation of people after a sharp rise in the water level of the Kosi, officials said. Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said the government sounded the alert after massive landslides Friday night over Bhote Kosi, one of the major tributaries of the Kosi river, that blocked the course of the main river in Nepal killing eight people and trapping many more. “As the landslide blocked the main course of the river and water accumulated there forming a massive water body, the Nepal Army is likely to blast the blockade, which is bound to cause an abrupt rise in the water level of the Kosi,” he said. “We expect a huge huge quantity of water to be released after the blast. It may also spill beyond the Kosi and its embankments, causing floods,” he said. The state disaster management department has asked officials to start evacuation of people living in the embankments of the Kosi in the four districts. “We have directed the district administrations to evacuate people and see that they don’t get trapped when the river level increases. Hundreds of thousands of people live in villages situated within the embankments of the Kosi,” said disaster management department special secretary Anirudh Kumar. Five teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and three teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have also been rushed to tackle any emergency in view of the floods. The water resources department held an emergency meeting Saturday to discuss the situation after the landslide over Bhote Kosi.

Israel bombards Gaza as it searches for soldier

GAZA CITY, AuGusT 2 (AP): Israel bombarded the southern Gaza town of Rafah on Saturday as troops searched for an officer they believe was captured by Hamas in an ambush that shattered a humanitarian cease-fire and set the stage for a major escalation of the 26-day-old war. The Israeli military has said it believes the soldier was grabbed in a Hamas ambush about an hour after an internationally brokered cease-fire took effect Friday morning. The Hamas military wing on Saturday tried to distance itself from the soldier’s alleged capture, which has prompted widespread international condemnation. President Barack Obama, U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon and others have accused Hamas of violating the cease-fire and have called for the soldier’s immediate and unconditional release. At least 35 Palestinians were killed in the bombardment and shelling in and around the city of Rafah early Saturday, said Palestinian health official Ashraf al-Kidra, adding that the area’s main hospital was evacuated because of the strikes, which killed dozens of people on Friday. Elsewhere in Gaza, Pal-

estinian officials reported more than 150 airstrikes including several against mosques and one against the Hamas-linked Islamic University in Gaza City. Heavy shelling continued along the border areas. The Israeli military said it struck 200 targets over the previous 24 hours. It said it attacked five mosques that concealed weapons and that the Islamic University was being used as a research and weapons manufacturing site for Hamas. The fiercest battles took place near the site of Friday’s attack and purported abduction, near Rafah, about three kilometers inside the strip and close to the borders with Israel and Egypt. Officials have reported that dozens of houses have been damaged or destroyed in airstrikes. The Hamas military wing said on its website that it is “not aware until this moment of a missing soldier or his whereabouts or the circumstances of his disappearance.” The group said the soldier might have been killed in a clash with Hamas fighters about an hour before the start of the 8:00 a.m. (0500 GMT) cease-fire, and that it had lost contact with the fighters.

“We believe all members of this group have died in an (Israeli) strike, including the Zionist soldier the enemy says disappeared,” it said. The Israeli military declined comment on the statement. Hamas could be withholding information about the soldier in order to extract concessions from Israel, a strategy used in the past by the Lebanese Hezbollah group, which did not disclose whether two Israeli soldiers it seized in 2006 were alive or dead until their remains were handed over in a prisoner

After 9/11 US tortured some folks: Obama

WAsHINGTON, AuGusT 2 (AP): The United States tortured al Qaida detainees captured after the Sept. 11,2001 9/11 attacks, President Obama said Friday, in some of his most expansive comments to date about a controversial set of CIA practices that he banned after taking office. “We tortured some folks,” Obama said at a televised news conference at the White House. “We did some things that were contrary to our values.” Addressing the impending release of a Senate report that criticizes CIA treatment of detainees, Obama said he believed

the mistreatment stemmed from the pressure national security officials felt to forestall another attack. He said Americans should not be too “sanctimonious,” about passing judgment through the lens of a seemingly safer present day. That view, which he expressed as a candidate for national office in 2008 and early in his presidency, explains why Obama did not push to pursue criminal charges against the Bush era officials who carried out the CIA program. To this day, many of those officials insist that what they did was not torture, which is a felony under U.S. law. The president’s comments are a blow to those former officials, as well as an estimated 200 people currently working at the CIA who played some role in the interrogation program. In 2009, Obama said he preferred to “look forward, not backwards,” on the issue, and he decided that no CIA officer who was following legal guidance - however flawed that guidance turned out to be - should be prosecuted. A long-running criminal investigation into whether the CIA exceeded the guid-

ance - which is an allegation of the Senate report was closed in 2012 without charges. Still, Obama’s remarks on Friday were more emphatic than his previous comments on the subject, including a May 2009 speech in which he trumpeted his ban of “so-called enhanced interrogation techniques,” and “brutal methods,” but did not flatly say the U.S. had engaged in torture. At an April 2009 new conference, he said, “I believe that waterboarding was torture and, whatever legal rationales were used, it was a mistake.” In addition to water boarding, the CIA used stress positions, sleep deprivation, nudity, humiliation, cold and other tactics that, taken together, were extremely brutal, the Senate report is expected to say. Obama on Friday did not mention a specific method, but he said the CIA used techniques that “any fair minded person would believe were torture.” “We crossed a line,” he said. “That needs to be understood and accepted...We did some things that were wrong, and thats what that report reflects.”

exchange. The Israeli Cabinet met for an exceptionally long and rare Friday night session to discuss the missing soldier. There was no immediate announcement on a course of action, but an official in the prime minister’s office said Israel “expects the United States and the international community to respond strongly to a terror organization that so blatantly defies them.” The official, who spoke anonymously because there was no official Israeli announcement, said “Hamas and other terror

groups will bear the consequences of their actions.” The disappearance of the soldier, 2nd Lt. Hadar Goldin, and the heavy clashes that followed it, ended an internationally brokered cease-fire that was to have been in place for three days and open the way for talks in Cairo on a more sustainable truce. Israel and Hamas have accused each other of violating the humanitarian pause. Israel launched an aerial offensive on July 8 to stop unrelenting Gaza rocket fire toward its cities and communities and lat-

er expanded it to a ground offensive mostly aimed at destroying an elaborate Hamas cross-border tunnel network used for attacks inside Israel. Since fighting began, Gaza militants have fired more than 3,000 rockets into Israel, reaching most major cities and forcing millions to seek cover. Hamas has also infiltrated Israel several times and killed Israeli soldiers. In central Israel, residents awoke on the Jewish Sabbath to sirens wailing at 6 a.m. Saturday warning of incoming rockets. The mili-

deploy security forces to isolate the frontier regions where 70 percent of the 1,323 cases have been detected. They banned the transportation of anyone showings signs of disease across borders, and pledged to introduce strict controls at international airports to prevent the virus spreading outside the region. There was international alarm last week when a U.S. citizen died of Ebola in Nigeria - Africa’s most populous country - after flying there from Liberia. Two people quarantined in Lagos after coming into contact with him were released on Friday after they tested negative for the disease. The three leaders also agreed to step up efforts to protect local healthcare workers and encourage them to return to work. With healthcare systems struggling to cope with the highly infectious disease, which requires rigorous precautions to stop it spreading, more than 60 medical workers have lost their lives, hampering efforts to tackle the outbreak. Liberia has already put in place tough measures including closing all schools and some government departments. Sierra Leone

KATMANDu, AuGusT 2 (AP): A massive landslide killed at least eight people and blocked a mountain river in northern Nepal on Saturday, causing the water to form a lake that was threatening to burst and sweep several villages, officials said. The death toll could climb because many houses were buried under piles of rock and soil or submerged by the rising water, said police official Arun Chetri, adding that the number of missing people could not be immediately determined. A man who was among the dozens of people injured by the landslide, which occurred at around 3 a.m. in the Sindhupalchowk area, about 120 kilometers (75 miles) east of Katmandu, said the death toll could be higher than 100, with dozens of houses in his and the neighboring village buried. “There are nearly 100 people in the 60 houses in my village and 20 more people in the neighboring village who were buried by the landslide. All of them are likely dead,” Durga Lal Shrestha told The Associated Press from his hospital

bed in Katmandu, the capital, where he was flown by helicopter. Shrestha, who suffered bruises on his face and arms, said that when the landslide occurred, he and his family heard a rumbling sound and then the ground shook like an earthquake. “The walls in my house caved in, but the roof was fine and that is how we were able to survive,” he said. “When we came out, it was dark and muddy. Everyone was screaming and it was a chaotic situation.” About 40 people were injured. Besides Shrestha, 10 others were flown to Katmandu for hospital treatment, including a Belgian man the hospital identified as Yan Brvyssu Antony, 46. By midmorning, the rain had stopped and the weather conditions had improved. After an emergency meeting, the Home Ministry ordered the army to remove the wall of mud and rocks that had created a temporary dam to be removed, and prepare for a disaster if the walls of the newly formed lake burst. The water has already formed a lake 3 kilometers (2 miles) in length.

Explosives flown in by the army were to be used to release the water, said Gopal Parajuli, the chief government administrator in the area. The Arniko highway, which connects Nepal to Tibet, was closed after the landslide and villagers were ordered to move to higher ground. Telephone and electricity lines were disrupted, but radio stations were airing the warnings and police were using loudspeakers, officials said. Meanwhile, in India’s Bihar state, south of Nepal, officials were evacuating villagers from three districts and moving them to safer places. People living near the Kosi River were being relocated to higher ground away from the river bank because of the risk of floods in rivers originating in Nepal, said Anirudh Prasad, a government official in Patna, Bihar’s capital. The Bihar government was setting up relief camps to provide food and medicine to thousands of the evacuees, he said. Landslides are common in mostly mountainous Nepal during the rainy season, which runs from June through September.

on Wednesday declared a state of emergency and called in troops to isolate Ebola victims. However, Friday’s agreement marked a reversal by Guinea, which had previously resisted taking tough steps, saying the disease was under control there. “Somewhat drastic measures will be taken,” Guinea’s Cooperation Minister Moustapha Koutoub Sano said. “These (border) prefectures and communities will be isolated.”

EMERGENCY COMMITTEE The outbreak has prompted some international organisations to withdraw. The U.S. Peace Corps has said it was withdrawing 340 volunteers from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. U.S. aid group Samaritans Purse said on Friday it would complete the evacuation of its 60 international staff from Liberia over the weekend. It said two American staff who contracted the disease in Liberia were in a serious condition and would be medically evacuated by early next week. Charity WaterAid said on Friday it was suspending its operations in Liberia as well. The WHO is launching a $100 million response

after the cease-fire began, when gunmen emerged from one or more Gaza tunnels and opened fire at Israeli soldiers, with at least one of the militants detonating an explosives vest, said Israeli army spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner. Goldin, a 23-year-old from the central Israeli city of Kfar Saba, was apparently captured in the ensuing mayhem, while another two Israeli soldiers were killed. “We suspect that he has been kidnapped,” Lerner said.n The military has provided no further details and it remains unclear if the officer is alive or dead. Outside the family’s home, just a block away from the city’s military cemetery, which has already seen one funeral of a Kfar Saba soldier from the fighting in Gaza, family and friends gathered and later went to an adjacent synagogue to pray for the soldier’s safe return. Goldin, who was recently engaged to get married, also has a twin brother in the military on the Gaza front-lines.n The officer’s father, Simha Goldin, said he expects Israel to “not stop before it turns over every stone in Gaza and returns Hadar home safe and sound.”

African leaders agree steps to fight Ebola

CONAKRY, AuGusT 2 (ReuTeRs): West African leaders agreed on Friday to take stronger measures to try to bring the worst outbreak of Ebola under control and prevent it spreading outside the region, including steps to isolate rural communities ravaged by the disease. The World Health Organisation and medical charity Medicins Sans Frontieres said on Friday the outbreak, which has killed 729 people in four West African countries, was out of control and more resources were urgently needed to deal with it. WHO chief Margaret Chan told a meeting of the presidents of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone - the countries worst affected that the epidemic was outpacing efforts to contain it and warned of catastrophic consequences in lost lives and economic distruption if the situation were allowed to deteriorate. “The presidents recognise the serious nature of the Ebola outbreak in their countries,” Chan said after the meeting. “They are determined to take extraordinary measures to stop Ebola in their countries.” In a communique after their talks, the leaders agreed to

tary said they were successfully intercepted by the Iron Dome defense system. Since fighting began on July 8, more than 1,650 Palestinians — mostly civilians — have been killed and more than 8,000 wounded, according to al-Kidra. Israel has lost 63 soldiers and three civilians, its highest death toll since the 2006 Lebanon war. Hundreds of other soldiers have been wounded. The prospect of an abducted soldier struck a particularly raw nerve in Israel and looked to worsen the fighting. Israel has a history of striking back hard after the abduction of its soldiers and going to great lengths to bring them back. In 2011, it traded more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners for an Israeli soldier who had been captured by Hamas and other militants five years earlier. Hezbollah’s capture of the two soldiers in a cross-border operation in 2006 sparked a 34-day war between the Iran-backed Shiite group and Israel. Israel later traded Lebanese prisoners for their bodies. The Israeli military accused Hamas of flagrantly violating Friday’s ceasefire. Goldin disappeared in an ambush about an hour

plan and the United States is providing material and technical support to the three countries. Further assistance will be discussed at a U.S.-Africa summit in Washington next week. Guinea President Alpha Conde told Reuters he would represent Africa in those Ebola talks. Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma and Liberia’s Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf announced this week they would remain at home to tackle the crisis. Chan appealed to the

wider world to provide more medical experts and funding. She pledged to take personal responsibility for coordinating international response efforts and mobilising the vast support needed to fight the virus, which can kill up to 90 percent of those infected. The fatality rate in this epidemic is about 60 percent. The WHO has convened an emergency committee on Aug. 6-7 to decide if the outbreak constitutes a public health emergency of international concern and

to recommend measures to tackle it. “The demands created by Ebola in West Africa outstrip your capacities to respond,” Chan told the presidents. Chan said cultural practices such as traditional burials and deep-seated beliefs were a significant cause of the spread and needed to change. In the final stages, its symptoms include external and internal bleeding, vomiting and diarrhoea - at which point Ebola becomes highly contagious.

in China kills 68

BeIJING, AuGusT 2 (AP): Sixty-eight people were killed and nearly 200 others injured, most with severe burns, after an explosion Saturday at an automotive parts factory in eastern China that supplies General Motors, officials said. It was China’s most serious industrial disaster since a fire at a poultry plant killed 119 people in June last year. Saturday morning’s explosion occurred when more than 200 workers were on the site of the factory, which is in an industrial zone in the city of Kunshan, officials from the city said at a news conference televised by state broadcaster CCTV. Kunshan, in Jiangsu province, is about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) southeast of Beijing. CCTV showed footage shot by residents of large plumes of thick, black smoke rising from the plant. Several firefighting trucks were shown in the factory compound. News websites posted photos showing survivors or those who were killed being lifted onto the back of large trucks, their bodies black, presumably from burns or soot. Some survivors were seen sitting on wooden cargo platforms on the road outside the factory or being carried into ambulances, their clothes apparently burned off and their skin exposed. The explosion occurred at 7:37 a.m. at a workshop in the factory, which polishes wheel hubs. Rescuers pulled out 44 bodies at the site, while 24 other people died at a hospital, officials said. At least 187 people were injured. More than 120 of the injured were sent to hospitals in Kunshan and the nearby city of Suzhou. Burn experts from a Shanghai hospital arrived in Kunshan to help, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. A preliminary investigation showed that the blast was likely a dust explosion, Xinhua said. bThe factory is operated by the Kunshan Zhongrong Metal Products Company, which according to its website was set up in 1998 and has a registered capital of $8.8 million. Its core business is electroplating aluminum alloy wheel hubs, and it supplies GM and other companies, the website said. In a statement, GM confirmed that Zhongrong is part of its network of suppliers. “We can confirm Zhongrong is a supplier to GM’s global supplier Dicastal,” the statement said. Police took away five senior Zhongrong executives to assist in the investigation, officials said, without providing details.m A woman who answered the main phone line at the Zhongrong metal company said it is a Taiwanese enterprise. She refused to give her name, any other information or the contact numbers of company staffers handling the case. Calls to the city’s government and police rang unanswered. mA dust explosion is caused by the fast combustion of particles suspended in air in an enclosed space. The particles could include dust or powdered metals such as aluminum. They would have to come into contact with a spark, such as fire, an overheated surface or electrical discharge from machinery. Workplace safety is a major problem in China, where safety regulations are often ignored and enforcement can be lax. In June 2013, 119 workers were killed when a fire raced through a chicken processing room at a poultry plant in the northern province of Jilin. The fire appeared to have been sparked by an explosion caused by leaking ammonia, officials said.

The Morung Express SPORTS 10 Will decide next course after Serena battles past Ivanovic into semis receiving order copy: Patel Young, Raonic, Dimapur

Sunday

3 August 2014

NEW DELHI, AUGUST 2 (PTI): Left red-faced after the ICC judicial commissioner Gordon Lewis found England seamer James Anderson “not guilty” of pushing Ravindra Jadeja during the Trent Bridge Test match, BCCI has gone a bit on the back foot as they are yet to decide on their next course of action. “We are expected to receive a detailed copy of the order that was passed by the Judicial Commissioner either by today or tomorrow. We will only be able to take a call in this regard

after receiving the order copy,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel told PTI today. “A detailed legal analysis is required before deciding on future course. Our legal team will study the report and will give us a feedback. In such cases, every point needs to be studied minutely and it will take some time. So it is premature to conclude whether we will appeal.” Asked if the Indian team got a raw deal in this case, the BCCI secretary’s answer was an indication that Board might just like

to put an end to this controversy as it is unlikely that there could be any conclusive evidence against Anderson. “It will be inappropriate to say that it has been unfair without going through the copy of the judgement. Let us wait for the written copy,” Patel said. As per ICC guidelines, only ICC CEO Dave Richardson has a right to appeal but as per reliable sources, he will need the permission of newly appointed ICC chairman N. Srinivasan.

Arsene Wenger dismisses Steven Gerrard's Luis Suarez claims

LONDON, AUGUST 2 (AFP): Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hit back at claims by Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard that striker Luis Suarez was "too good" to ever move to the north London outfit. The Gunners tabled a £40,000,001 ($67.5 million, 50.4 million euros) bid for Suarez a year ago in the mistaken belief it would trigger a release clause in his contract at Anfield. And the Uruguayan went on to score 31 goals as Liverpool narrowly missed out on the Premier League title before joining Barcelona this summer. Gerrard claimed that he had advised Suarez, currently banned from all football for four months after biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during a World Cup group game, against joining Arsenal last year. "I said: 'Don’t go to Arsenal,'" the Liverpool captain told several British newspapers on Thursday. "With all due respect to them, I said to him that he was too good for Arsenal." But Wenger, who instead signed Real Madrid’s Mesut Ozil for a club-record fee, insisted on Friday no player would deem them-

selves too good for his side. "You’re never too good for Arsenal and Steven Gerrard knows that," he said during a press conference ahead of this weekend’s Emirates Cup, in which Arsenal will host Portuguese champions Benfica and Monaco. "But I can understand completely that he asked him to stay because he wanted him (Suarez) to play with him and have a chance to win the Premier League. But it didn’t happen, and anyway, Suarez left." Wenger has been busy in the market this summer with the addition of Chile forward Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona, England youth international Calum Chambers from Southampton and Newcastle

United right-back Mathieu Debuchy. However, Wenger hinted that he has not finished his summer spending just yet. "I’m very happy because I did what I wanted, and I am still open to do more," he said. "Let’s not forget that we are at August 1 today, and the transfer window closes on the 31st. "We are a bit ahead of what we usually do, because the availability on the market was bigger and earlier than before." There may yet be players moving away from the Emirates Stadium as Wenger admitted the future of defender Thomas Vermaelen remains unclear, with the club captain unhappy at his lack of firstteam action last season. "At the moment Thomas Vermaelen is here," added Wenger. "It (a move) could happen, yes it’s a possibility that he goes. If he goes we have to replace him because he’s an important player in our squad. "I expect him to stay but he, of course, did not play enough games last year. For me he’s a very important player but I couldn’t guarantee him the games he wanted last year."

STANFORD, AUGUST 2 (AFP): World number one Serena Williams fought off a determined Ana Ivanovic 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 on Friday to reach the semifinals of the WTA hard court tournament at Stanford. The top-seeded American booked a Saturday showdown with eighthseeded German Andrea Petkovic, who thwarted a possible all-Williams semifinal with a 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 triumph over Venus Williams. Top-seeded Serena, playing her first tournament since she departed Wimbledon looking weak and woozy, said the one hour, 57-minute match against Ivanovic confirmed she had regained her fitness in the wake of the virus that hampered her at the All England Club. "I'm feeling really good," she said. "I had some long rallies and I wasn't out of breath at all, so I was, like, 'Yay!'" But former world number one Ivanovic, seeded fifth, didn't make things easy. The Serbian took the opening set in just 25 minutes, but Williams had raised her level and taken a 5-2 lead with one break of serve in the second even before Ivanovic received oncourt treatment for a tight hip after the seventh game. Although she seemed to be in some discomfort Ivanovic held serve to narrow the gap to 5-3 before Williams pocketed the second set and broke Ivanovic to open the third. "It wasn't very easy," Williams said. "Ana plays very well, this court is a little fast so she really was hitting a lot of shots. I just fought and stayed in there." Trailing 3-1 in the third, Ivanovic won three straight games to take a 4-3 lead. Williams broke Ivanovic for a 5-4 lead, but was broken herself in the next game before finally wrapping it up with one more break of Ivanovic's serve

and a dominant service game of her own. "It was really important for me," Williams said. "I wanted to come out with the win no matter what, and I'm really excited, actually, that I was able to win today." She said she was expecting a tough match from Petkovic, who stormed through the first set over Venus Williams then held on in the face of the American's determined comeback attempt. Williams, who had beaten fourth-seeded Victoria Azarenka on Wednesday night, won six of the last

seven games of the second set to force a decisive third set. Petkovic twice went up a break in the third only for Williams to break back, but Petkovic won the last two games to seal the win after one hour and 49 minutes. "She played really well, and I wasn't as on today as in previous days," Williams said. "But you're going to have days like that and have to work through them." Petkovic said beating both Williams sisters in the same tournament was a tall order. "You don't ever have the feeling you have some-

thing under control when you play either of them," she said. "They can hit so hard, and play consistently well. You always have to be on your toes." In the other semifinal, third-seeded German Angelique Kerber will take on unseeded American Varvara Lepchenko. Kerber steamrolled Spain's Garbine Muguruza 6-2, 6-1, while Lepchenko -- who ousted secondseeded Agnieszka Radwanska in the second round -needed only 51 minutes to dismiss US qualifier Sachia Vickery 6-1, 6-0.

WASHINGTON, AUGUST 2 (AP): Donald Young reached his first ATP semifinal in three years by beating seventh-seeded Kevin Anderson 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2 on Friday at the Citi Open. His semifinal opponent on Saturday will be No. 2 Milos Raonic, who ended the surprising run of unheralded American Steve Johnson, winning 7-6 (2), 6-2. Johnson beat the tour's top two servers, John Isner and Ivo Karlovic, in his previous two matches, but he couldn't be the man who ranks third, Raonic, failing to even earn one break point. No. 6-seeded Richard Gasquet of France reached the semifinals by beating No. 4 Kei Nishikori of Japan 6-1, 6-4. Gasquet faced only one break point, in the final game, and saved it when Nishikori sailed a return long. Next for Gasquet will be No. 10 Santiago Giraldo of Colombia or No. 13 Vasek Pospisil of Canada, whose quarterfinal was suspended because of rain after only two points were played in the third set Friday. They will play that final set on Saturday, with the winner returning to the court hours later to face Gasquet. In women's action, two-time major champion Svetlana Kuznetsova moved into the semifinals when Vania King withdrew from the tournament with a right hip injury. King also pulled out of next week's tournament in Montreal but doesn't think the injury will prevent her from entering the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 25. "I don't think it's serious. I don't need a couple months off. I don't need surgery," King said. "I'm going to take off a couple days and see how it feels and then go from there."

Bolt makes CWG debut after Glasgow uproar Lampard set to join City on loan

GLASGOW, AUGUST 2 (AP): If Scots were offended by Usain Bolt they didn't show it on Friday as the Jamaican sprint star made his Commonwealth Games debut. Despite a newspaper claiming that he was disparaging about Glasgow, Bolt's introduction to a 40,000-plus crowd at Hampden Park was greeted with a roar of cheers. "I was never worried, I was just looking forward to coming out here and showing the people," the world's fastest man said. "I am here to have fun and compete." And Bolt gave them what they wanted to see, taking the baton off Nickel Ashmeade to anchor Jamaica's 4x100-meter team to a comfortable win in its heat as the favorite advanced to Saturday's final in 38.99 seconds. Even the weather turned into Bolt's favor after days of drizzle. "It was wonderful, it's just like the London Olympics — the crowd was great," the six-time Olympic champion said. Three days earlier, The Times of London quoted Bolt as saying that he was "not really" having fun in Glasgow, using an expletive and deriding the caliber of the competition featuring former British colonies. "I would never have used that word," Bolt said, discussing the story publicly for the first time." While acknowledging that he spoke to the journalist, Bolt disputed the most eye-catching comments attributed to him and insisted he is enjoying the Scottish experience. "The people have been fun and I've had some great laughs," Bolt said. Most importantly, Bolt successfully negotiated his first track action of the year after being sidelined with a left foot injury that prevented him from competing in the individual sprints at his first Commonwealth

Games. "Injury-wise everything was good, otherwise I just felt sluggish," the 27-year-old Bolt said. "I know it's going to take me time to get into my rhythm." Bolt wasn't the only one putting aside off-track drama, as 2012 Olympic champion Sally Pearson won the 100 hurdles in 12.67 seconds. In a disruptive week, the head coach of Australia's athletics team was ordered to return home as punishment for criticizing Pearson for not attending a pre-Glasgow training camp. In other games news: MEDAL STRIPPPED: Chika Amalaha, a 16-yearold weightlifter was stripped of her gold medal after a doping hearing. The

Nigerian tested positive for diuretics and masking agents after winning the 53-kilogram (117-pound) division last Friday in becoming the youngest female to win a weightlifting title at a Commonwealth Games. Amalaha's gold medal now goes to Dika Toua of Papua New Guinea. "Being a junior obviously there must be some culpability from those that are looking after her, whether it is coaches or managers or doctors," Games President Prince Imran Tunku of Malaysia, who chaired the hearing, told The Associated Press. EBOLA FEARS: With the deadly Ebola outbreak in West Africa spreading, fears have reached the

games. Two Sierra Leone athletes — cyclist Moses Sesay and table tennis player Samuel Morris — underwent tests for the virus in Glasgow but were cleared to compete. With visas valid until September, team members are hoping to stay in Scotland in a bid to avoid Ebola. "About 30 of the delegation who are due to return home are becoming very much worried," Sierra Leone chef de mission Unisa Deen Kargbo told the BBC. "They will wait to see the measures taken back home and if it is safe to return home." Games organizers said Ebola had not been detected in the athletes' village. HAMPDEN HITS: With Olympic champion Mo Farah of England out injured, Moses Kipsiro defended his 10,000-meter Commonwealth title in 27 minutes, 56.11 seconds, pushing Josphat Kipkoech Bett into second. Cameron Levins of Canada took bronze. Perhaps the greatest feat on the track came from Lynsey Sharp in winning silver in the 800 final despite a bout of sickness. Eunice Jepkoech Sum of Kenya won in 2 minutes, 0.37 seconds. "Up to this morning I was in hospital in the village until 5:30," Sharp said. "I haven't slept at all. I was throwing up all night." After winning pole vault bronze in 2006 and silver in 2010, Steven Lewis completed the set by winning the gold after clearing 5.55 meters. It was England's first title in the event since the 1986 Edinburgh Games. ENGLAND LEADS: England strengthened its lead over Australia at the top of the medals' standings with two days of competition remaining. In the gymnastics, 16-year-old Claudia Fragapane won her fourth gold in Glasgow by claiming the floor title.

NEW YORK, AUGUST 2 (AGENCIES): Frank Lampard is set to make a sensational return to English football with Manchester City. Lampard, 36, left Chelsea after 13 years this summer and joined City’s US team New York City FC last week. But it is understood that the England midfielder is now ready to sign a six-month loan deal with the Premier League champions. Although the move would primarily allow Lampard to stay fit until he starts training with his Major League Soccer team in January, he is set to be included in City’s squad for both the Premier League and Champions League this season. Manuel Pel-

legrini’s side face Chelsea on Sunday, September 21. Former Blues manager Carlo Ancelotti, in the US as part of Real Madrid's preseason tour, expressed his surprise at the move before wishing the veteran midfielder luck. 'I didn’t know this.

I'm really surprised because I thought he was coming here to play in USA to play,' said the Italian manager. 'Its too late for me to take him to Madrid but I'm really happy for Frank as I have a good memory of him. I wish him luck. He’s a

good signing for Man City,' he added. Lampard still has a number of options on the table but he is reluctant to follow New York’s other star signing David Villa to Australia for the rest of the year to keep fit at City’s other sister club Melbourne. Speaking at his unveiling in New York last week, he said: ‘I will have to keep fit. I'll have to train at the very top level, whether that's on my own or with a club somewhere, I'll have to see. ‘Of course I'll keep fit and make sure my levels don't drop too much. When we come here for pre-season I want to be ready to go. I want to fly out of the blocks. I don't want to come out sluggish.’

Paes, Sania to lead Indian challenge at Asian Games

NEW DELHI, AUGUST 2 (PTI): Indian selectors reposed faith in Leander Paes as the 40-year-old veteran was today included in the Asian Games squad along with established stars, Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna. The selection committee announced a 12-member team, which also has last edition’s gold medal winners Somdev Devvarman and Sanam Singh. Somdev had won the men’s singles gold as well as the men’s

doubles gold with Sanam. Tall and big-serving Saketh Myneni and Yuki Bhambri will make their debut at the prestigious quadrennial event, to be held in Incheon, Korea from September 19 to October 4. It will be interesting to see who Paes pairs with since Bopanna and Myneni of late have played Davis Cup ties together and Somdev and Sanam are the defending champions. National Selection Com-

mittee chairman Anil Dhupar defended Paes’ selection in the team. "He is the biggest Indian star. He is performing very well at the Grand Slams, so he had to be in the team. Last time there were reasons for him not to play," Dhupar told PTI. Asked who Paes would pair with, Dhupar said captain Anand Amritraj will decide on the pairings. Asked if youngsters such as Ramkumar Ramanathan and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan were con-

sidered, Dhupar said, "We are encouraging young players that is why we have chosen Saketh in the team." Ramkumar had recently made two back-to-back ITF singles finals in Spain and won one title. Paes had missed out on the 2010 Guangzhou Games along with Bopanna and Mahesh Bhupathi. In the women’s side, country’s leading player Sania will spearhead the challenge along with singles number one Ankita Raina. Sania had won a singles bronze and mixed doubles silver with Vishnu Vardhan. Prarthana Thombare, Snehadevi Reddy, Natasha Palha and Rishika Sunkara are the other players in the squad. There are two reserves in the side, left-handed Divij Sharan in men’s squad and diminutive Shweta Rana in the women’s. Sania’s mother Nasima Mirza will captain the women’s squad while Leander’s father, Vece Paes is team doctor. The team will have two trainers in Anand Kumar and Dharmendar Pratap Singh.

Guitar Academy: Who or what is your greatest source of inspiration? Jennifer Batten: Inspiration comes from everywhere. It could be from reading a book, listening to a podcast, going to a concert, or just speaking with someone. It changes all the time. This summer it’s been mostly from visual art. I go to a lot of art and craft shows. I find it inspiring to see what other people create. I see creativity as universal and it can all translate to music. GA: You are a session musician as well as a solo artist. What are the demands of being a collaborator and a solo artist on your creative energy as a guitarist? JB: You never know what you’ll be asked to do. A lot of times people just want a 16 bar guitar solo for their CD’s, but the last one I did was for a band called the Quadrophones (4 female saxophone players). They wanted me to add rhythm parts, fills, solos and whatever else I felt. I really enjoyed the tunes so it was easy to get creative. I often try to record more parts than will be used so they can choose what they want once they receive my tracks. I do almost all sessions from my home studio or laptop when traveling. Sometimes I listen and really have to struggle to find parts that make sense. In that case, I like to listen to the tracks over several days to absorb the vibe first. GA: You have performed with Jeff Beck and Michael Jackson, and worked with Dave Rogers and Michael Sembello, among high-profile musicians. Did the environment of playing with such great musicians ever made you felt you had to suppress your personal playing styles to accommodate theirs? JB: With a band like Michael Jackson, you have to understand your role. #1 is to support the artist with a great groove. Solos are secondary. With MJ, the Beat It solo was so well known, that the audience would expect it so I copied Van Halen’s solo. With some others like Workin Day and Night, I was expected to improvise in part because it was an open solo and you’d never know when Michael would end it. I was lucky I got to show some of my personality in that tune. But you shouldn’t expect that kind of freedom when hired for a big gig. With Jeff also, I got some freedom to solo but did not assume that. My first job was to support him and make him comfortable so he could excel at what he does. GA: ‘Flight of the Bumblebee’ was classic Batten, and entirely different from your 80s output such as the hard rock ‘Respect’ or any of your works with Jeff Becks and Michael Jackson. What were the influences behind the instrumental? JB: It was just a big challenge for me. It’s a difficult but great picking exercise, but I soon realized I’d never get the proper speed without tapping. I went from 140 or 150 bpm to 200 when I got rid of the pick! GA: Tell us a little bit of the technique you used in ‘Flight of the Bumblebee.’ JB: I went through several different fingerings of tapping (playing notes with both hands) before I landed on one that was comfortable, and that I could easily play steadily to a metronome setting. For the first chunk of it for instance, I play the first note of every group of 4 notes, with the right hand index finger and then pull off the other 3 notes.

GA: What is the secret behind to get a good guitar tone? JB: If I knew the answer, the music equipment business would grind to a halt and people would stop buying new products. The closest answer to great tone is that it’s 90% in your hands and how you manipulate the strings. There isn’t that much that has to do with equipment but all of us including myself, keep looking at the new stuff just in case it could help take our playing to the next level. The industry counts on this mentality, and so it keeps surviving. As far as your fingers, realize that guitar is the easiest instrument to personalize because you have a plethora of choices every time you play a note. You choose where on the string to pick, how hard to pick, weather you use a pick or fingers, and where on the fretboard to choose to play a note. Do you bend the note or play it straight? Do you add vibrato? These choices all become second nature as time moves on and you get more experience. It’s natural that you make choices that come from your experience in how to express your thoughts. In the beginning, you just need to be open to learning every possible way to express yourself and see what resonates with you. Also be aware of what your favorite players do and emulate that. GA: Blues was a huge influence in your playing. What is the role of the blues for the young rock guitarist? Or for that matter, how can a student reconcile the demands of musicality which classical styles make, with the virtuosity of modern rock forms? JB: Blues has a certain attitude that you won’t find in classical music. It’s not good or bad. It’s just different. To learn any genre, you need to really immerse yourself in it. You need to spend hundreds of hours listening to other people playing it as well as playing it yourself. You can tell when someone plays a style if it’s authentic and they’ve put it in hours needed, or they’re just playing “at” that style. Nailing blues scales all over the neck is a must for rock, pop, blues, and even jazz. The “blues” notes offer a secret sauce beyond diatonic scales. GA: What advice would you give to aspiring guitarists whether they are rock learns or classical aspirants after all both involve the same principles of musicality and technique? JB: I’d say absorb everything you can. Learn both styles. If you like one more than the other, then there will come a time, you might drop one of them and concentrate only on the other. You may also choose to keep both styles at a high level if you like them both. They’ll also both offer you different possibilities in the work force. You can get gigs playing solo classical guitar, but rock usually requires a full band is more expensive to book. GA: How was your experience during your tour to Nagaland? JB: It was really cool to have the opportunity to tour Nagaland. It was way more exotic than most of my travels to Europe or Japan for instance. I think it’s always healthy for people to travel and see how other people live. GA: A word of advice for those who are thinking of taking up Music as a career. JB: If you want to make music for a living then take every facet of music seriously and spend the time needed to become good at it. You will be more valuable if you can read than a player that can’t. You’ll be more valuable if you know a lot of different styles than if you’re limited to one or two. Be flexible and do your best to accommodate the needs of people who are hiring you. If someone wants your band for a wedding for instance and they want certain songs, don’t say you don’t know them, learn them. Although music is an art, it’s emotional, and helps you express, it’s also a job you should be working at every day.

GA: You have always been seen with Washburns and Marshalls. What are your main rigs for live performances and recording? JB: I’ve changed gear a bit though out my career. I was with Washburn for 15 years or so but when Line 6 came out with the JT Variax Strat, I jumped ship to be able to access all the virtual sounds that guitar has to offer. It has the added bonus that when the electricity in a club is bad (i.e. ground loops and buzzing) I have the option to switch to the virtual pick ups and it’s magically quiet. GA: You started playing the guitar at the age of 8 years. What according to you are the primary lessons every guitar student must learn when starting out? JB: It’s smart to learn how to read music when you’re young. That gives you access to volumes of written material, from classical to jazz to rock or whatever. There are so many elements to music that are important, from ear training, to learning theory, and transcribing. They all have value that comes into play for the rest of your life. But the thing that attracts most people is to be able to just play songs. So, I think it’s very important to teach through songs. You learn the chords and the melody and along side of that, you should learn how to dissect the song and understand how the chord progression came together and what scales you use to solo over it. It’s also important to listen to music in various modes. You can listen to it as background music, and you can listen to it consciously and zone in on the different elements and instruments. That really helps you expand your own musicality. GA: You have advocated rhythm as the foundation of

Johny Depp

GA: What are the main concepts of musicality that every guitar student must master besides the obvious and technical? JB: The bottom line is emotion and feeling. Writing a song that you think is clever won’t necessarily make good listening. There has to be elements in it that make people feel something. Otherwise it’s like a painting that people will walk right past without noticing.

Emma Watson The Guitar Academy stands up for Turkish women An interview with presents: Jennifer Batten H rock styles and even developed studies in your ‘Rock Sauce for Rhythm.’ Specifically what can the young lead guitarist learn from rhythm? JB: Rhythm is the foundation of all music. Having good time is what glues a band together and makes a tune feel good. You can have all the elements of a good melody, interesting chord changes, and great production, but without a good feeling groove you won’t reach very many people. That goes for soloing as well. Your lines need to fit in the groove pocket and feel good.

They just weren’t together a lot, her life is a whirlwind. They have gotten back together before, it just got to be too hard for now, a source said. Earlier this year, the 23-year-old Oscar-winning actress talked about her relationship with Hoult in an interview, sharing how she and her boyfriend juggled work and personal life. Lawrence and Hoult were last photographed together in May. The 24-year-old actor, meanwhile, was most recently seen having a meal with Kristen Stewart. The two, who will play lovers in ‘Equals’, were seen by a fan at Tsukiji Market, Tokyo.

Chinappa, Pallikal win gold at CWG

Glasgow | August 2

ipika Pallikal and Joshana Chinappa created history by winning the firstever gold medal in squash while pugilists Sarita Devi and Devendro Singh had to be content with silver as India added four more medals to their kitty on the tenth day of competitions in the 20th Games on Saturday. Dipika and Joshana stole the limelight with their historic feat as they beat Jenny Duncalf and Laura Massaro of England 11-6, 11-8 in the womens doubles squash final. It was the first squash medal for India in the Commonwealth Games. Sarita Devi and Devendro Singh were the other star performers during the day with their silver-winning achievements in the boxing ring while Sakina Khatun claimed an unexpected bronze in powerlifting as India made a last-ditch effort to boost their medals tally. Sarita lost to Shelley Watts of Australia after a gritty fight in women's lightweight (57-60kg) category final while her younger brother Devendro was beaten by Paddy Barnes of Northern Ireland in the men's light-flyweight (46-49kg) final at the Hydro Arena. Devendro was no match for Barnes and the unanimous 3-0 verdict in favour of the Irish reflected that. With the two silver today, India has bagged three medals from boxing with Pinki Jangra having won a bronze after losing her semifinal bout against Michaela Walsh of Northern Ireland in women's 51kg category yesterday. The collection of four more medals took India's overall tally to 55 with 14 gold, 25 silver and 16 bronze. India maintained their fifth position in the medal standings with England topping the charts with a total collection of 145 medals followed by Australia (125), Canada (75) and Scotland (49). Sakina Khatun did India proud by winning a bronze medal in the women's lightweight (upto 61 kg) powerlifting event. The Bangalore-born powerlifter finished behind Nigeria's Esther Oyema (Gold) and England's Natalie Blake (Silver) settle at third position. The Indian lifted a total weight of 88.2 kilograms, while Esther lifted 136kgs and Natalie managed 100.2kgs. India kept themselves on course for a historic gold medal in the badminton event with P Kashyap just a win away while 2010 champions Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa, too, were on course to defend their title. Young P V Sindhu, however, suffered a heartbreaking loss. (agencies)

Delhi Games' champion Krishna was struggling right from the start and barely managed to make the cut for the final round, finishing a lowly 11th among the top-12. Krishna finished fifth in the final with a throw of 57.84m.

GLASGOW, AuGuSt 2 (AGeNcIeS): Laishram Devi who started the proceedings for the Indian boxers on Day 10 at the Commonwealth Games 2014 finished second and will have to be content with the silver medal in this edition of games. Australia’s Shelley Watts won the gold medal with victory on points. The bronze medal went to Northern Ireland’s Alanna Audley-Murphy and Mozambique’s Machongua at the SSE Hydro. Getting off to a good start, the thirty-two year old Laishram took the opening round against Shelley Watts with a perfect score of 30 from all the three judges as the Aussie struggled. But by the end of first round itself, Laishram Devi was seen heavy breathing. Coming into the second round, she looked lack lustrous and ineffective against gradually turning aggressive Shelley Watts who took the next rounds. Laishram Devi was brilliant in her semi-finals

match previous day. Mozambique’s Maria Machongua was no match for Sarita who won all the four rounds of two minutes each in the women’s 57-60 kg category semi-final. Not only that, the veteran had a perfect 40 points from all three judges while her opponent had to

settle for the bronze. This is second medal in boxing after Pinki Rani brought home India’s first medal from the discipline at the 2014 edition of the Games. She lost her women’s 48-51 kg semi-final bout but took home the bronze.

GLASGOW, AuGuSt 2 (AFP): India will face Australia in a repeat of the Commonwealth Games men's hockey final from four years ago in Delhi after producing a stunning comeback from 2-0 down to beat New Zealand 3-2 on Saturday. Earlier, Australia had secured their place in a fifth successive Games final with a 4-1 rout over England. New Zealand had won all four of their matches in the pool stages and looked well on course for the final thanks to early goals from Simon Chile and Nick Haig. However, India rallied just before half-time with a penalty stroke being awarded when the ball had been illegally blocked on the New Zealand line from a penalty corner and captain for the day Rupindeer Singh slotted home. And the game was turned on its head during a five minute spell early in the second-half as Ramandeep Singh skillfully flicked home a low cross before Akashdeep Singh blasted high into the roof of the net to give India a deserved victory. They face an even tougher task on Sunday,

though, in the form of world and Commonwealth champions Australia, who have already beaten India 4-2 during the group stages.

In the pouring rain it was England who were caught cold after just two minutes as Tristan White gave Australia the perfect

start from a penalty corner before Simon Orchard doubled their lead just eight minutes later. "We expected a very

tough game against a very strong opponent, but our boys did really well today," said Australia coach Graham Reid. "Scoring a goal with two minutes gone in the match is something we dream about. We always try to create opportunities for to make that happen." Harry Martin briefly gave England hope when he bundled home from close range on 52 minutes to half the deficit. However, England never looked like levelling and Australia rounded off their victory with two more goals in the final 10 minutes as Chris Ciriello fired a penalty corner low into the net before Eddie Ockenden had the simple task of finishing into an open goal. "We're very disappointed. We thought we could win but we weren't quite there today," said England coach Bobby Crutchley. "We didn't create a lot and they made it quite difficult for us." England do, though, at least have the chance to secure a medal in the bronze medal match on Sunday. "We don't want to leave here with nothing," added Crutchley. "We want that bronze medal tomorrow."
