The Longtsung Village Head GB under Sanis Sub-Division of Wokha District in a press note informed that on December 8, 2016 one Nyamo Mozhui (29 years) S/o Late Simon Mozhui hailing from Longtsung Village was trampled to death by a rogue elephant at Longtsung Village stretch. However, the two others managed to escape, the press note stated. In this connection, the Longtsung Village has appealed the concerned authority to look into the matter at the earliest for necessary action.

Christmas concert titled “Joy to the World” featuring Mengu Suokhrie, Wangyat Wangsu, The Bangalore Conservatory (Handbell Ensemble) and Hopong Naga also lit up the evening with festive melody. It may be recalled that the 16th edition of the Hornbill Festival in 2015 registered 2, 34, 113 visitors in Kisama.

DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 10 (MExN): The decision of the TR Zeliang led Government to hold the Urban Local Bodies election with 33% reservation for women in early 2017 is gathering a big storm. In a confrontational mode, the Naga Hoho and the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization (ENPO) on Saturday served a 15-day ultimatum to the State Government to convene a special session and restore the 22nd September 2012 Assembly Resolution which was revoked at the 14th session of the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly in November 24, 2016. In the ultimatum addressed to the Chief Minister, the two organizations maintained that the Naga people had stood “rock solid” with the decision of the Assembly when it passed a resolution that Part XI A of the Constitution of India should not be applied in the state of Nagaland, because of the fact that Article 243(M) grants the state an exception for implementation of the same Act. It asserted that the 33% women reservation policy of India in their fight against the cursed caste system where lower castes are discriminated by dominant men folks cannot be equated with the social practice of the Nagas. “No single Naga father denies his daughter to go to school. Like-

wise, each and every Naga men longs to see his daughter becoming a successful lady,” the two organization argued. It therefore said what the constitution of India has recognized and exempted Nagaland State should be put back in place, because it is direct infringement to the Article 371(A) wherein Naga social practice is protected. The Naga Hoho and the ENPO also asked the State Government not to issue Election Notification as of now, because of the fact that even if the State do so, implementing and conducting election to the ULBs without the participation of the people would rather “embarrass the Government.” The two organizations also expressed its displeasure over the handling of the pressure applied by some “few women claiming to be representing the whole of Naga women.” It has therefore asked the State Government to make “these women folks withdraw the PIL filed in the Supreme Court of India.” The two organizations wanted that “these women leaders” who have forgotten their ancestral Naga social fabric must maintain the Naga identity for the larger interest of the Nagas. The Naga Hoho and ENPO said that the ultimatum is served to “your good office reiterating the fact that you represent the people and therefore your government should listen to the voice and cries of the people.” Failing to convene a special session and restoring the 22nd September 2012 Assembly Resolution within the given time frame, the Naga Hoho and the ENPO cautioned that it will be compelled to “initiate its own course of action against your government towards which end, the consequences should be your responsibilities.”

public to proceed ahead towards Mao gate Newmai News Network Senapati | December 10

A large number of security convoy moving towards Mao Gate located at Manipur-Nagaland border was prevented from proceeding further at Senapati town late this evening by irate Naga public. On learning that a combined convoy of Manipur police, CRPF and IRB were heading towards Mao Gate from Imphal to escort stranded goods trucks, the public used loud speakers asking the people to come out and drive back the security force convoy. Minutes later, a large number of people came out and blocked the highway. On reaching Senapati town, the moving security convoy halted on seeing the large number of people. Though tension ran high, there was no physical confrontation. After an hour of halting at Senapati town, the security convoy

returned towards Imphal without proceeding ahead. The Nagas under the banner of the United Naga Council (UNC) began the blockade on the important two highways of Imphal-Dimapur route and Imphal-Jiribam route since November 1 protesting against the Manipur government’s move to give district status to Sadar Hills and Jiribam. The situation was aggravated after the Manipur Government arrested the president and publicity secretary of UNC on November 25 for allegedly imposing the ongoing economic blockade and also for different cases of arson committed in the course of the blockade. On December 9, an uncompromising Manipur Government under the chief minister-ship of Ibobi Singh, ignoring the ongoing intense protest, had announced the creation of seven (7) new districts, which include Jiribam, Kamjong, Kakching, Tengnoupal, Noney, Pherzawl and Kangpokpi. In the next few days, various Naga frontal organisations under the aegis of the UNC have planned to chalk out strategies against the actions of the Manipur government.

DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 10 (MExN): The Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) has demanded a thorough and proper investigation be carried out and strongest action on all those involved in the PDS scam which was unearthed on December 9, 2016 in Dimapur. Lauding the ACAUT Nagaland team and the various colony councils for unearthing the multi-crore PDS rice scam in which some unscrupulous non-local businessmen in connivance with some Nagas have been fleecing the common people for the last couple of decades, the media cell, CNTC in a press statement on Saturday said the time is ripe for every right-thinking citizens to voice out against such malpractices and crooked transaction which are “sucking every morsel from the common man’s plate.” “Many common Naga public had been deprived of various essential commodities like rice, sugar kerosene oil etc. by some crooked and dishonest non-local businessmen who are hand in glove with some nefarious local people,” the CNTC stated to this effect. It demanded cancellation of tender order allotted to those involved in the siphoning of public essential commodities for their own selfish gain. It also questioned the motive of the Food and Civil Supplies Department for allowing private individuals to operate such godowns in private establishments other than the FCI designated godowns.

ACAUT questions government

DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 10 (MExN): Against Corruption And Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) Nagaland on Saturday said the Chief Minister of Nagaland, the Nagaland Police and the Department of Food & Civil Supplies should respond to a number of concerns connected to the detection of the alleged diversion of rice meant for PDS into the open market. To the law-enforcing agency, ACAUT wanted to know whether the Dimapur police had made arrest of the accused persons after the registration of the FIR or whether they are “under any kind of political pressure to go slow on the FIR.” While accepting that the accused were “powerful people, virtually untouchable for the last 2 decades as they are protected by politicians, Naga factional groups and other interest groups,” ACAUT however urged the police “not to let their reputation go down the drain.” It also wanted to know why the police have not raided the “approximately 15-20 mills in and around Dimapur in the business of polishing and repackaging FCI rice.” The ACAUT alleged that these mills are supplied FCI rice and wheat by stockiest, including the current accused, and the repackaged items are then sold off to gullible consumers as branded rice The CNTC also demanded that an open tender system should be floated in all the 73 blocks allotted for Nagaland state so that “our educated unemployed Naga youths will be benefitted and all essential commodities under the PDS will reach the common people in every nook and corner of the state.” Meanwhile, the CNTC extended supported to the Governor of Nagaland P.B Acharya for his concern and speaking against about the prevailing corruption in Nagaland, which has rotted the very root of our moral fabric and completely

or wheat. “Unless, the intention is to weaken the case, the police should have raided the mills on 9th evening itself when the FIR was registered,” it stated. To the Food & Civil Supplies Department, ACAUT wanted to know whether the department will cancel the super-stockiest license awarded to one of the accused in the light of his involvement in this multi- thousand crore scam. Alleging that the scam is responsible for generating the maximum black money in Nagaland since decades past, ACAUT questioned whether the bank accounts of the accused persons will be frozen by the police and the taxmen? To the Chief Minister who is in charge of the Food and Civil Supplies Department, ACAUT said the CM should explain how “our own rice, due to us at Rs. 3/- per kg are siphoned off and the same rice resold to us, the consumers, at the rate of Rs. 35/- per kg.” “To be fair to the present Chief Minister, his predecessors did initiate this scam but it is incumbent upon the serving CM to come clean with a statement and a promise to give a free hand to Dimapur police to probe the case,” it stated.

deteriorate our integrity. Pointing out that even though hundreds of crores are being sanctioned by the central government, the pathetic condition of our state roads, unpaid salaries, mid-day meal scams and fuel adulteration scam etc. tells the mismanagement at every level of governance. The CNTC also wondered as to why anyone should be displeased or annoyed with the Governor’s straightforward voice against the corruption culture. “Unless every Nagas take corrective measures at the earliest we are doomed

and our coming generations will curse and never forgive us. Stating that many legislators and bureaucrats harp out lofty speeches about change and voices against corruption in various public functions, the CNTC however lamented that their actions are just the opposite. It also observed that some legislators of late, are acting like a “messiah of unity and parroting wonderful makebelieve speeches to our Naga society but what they do behind closed doors is just laughable and hilarious.”

NEFIS for consultative decision-making process

Delhi, DeceMber 10 (Mexn): The North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) organized a seminar at North Campus, Delhi University on December 10 on the issue of creation of Sadar Hills district in Manipur and the crisis it has sparked. According to a press release from the NEFIS, the seminar was attended by organisations representing different communities of the north-east, including MSAD and DAMMS. Naga, Meitei, Kuki, Bodo, Khoibu and Kom representatives were also present. NEFIS, in the release, stated that the seminar was organised with the intention of seeking the views of all North-Eastern communities on the issue prevailing in Manipur. “There have been struggles for formation of new revenue districts,” which has in turn met

opposition from certain communities, the NEFIS said. While stating that economic blockade and counter blockade has created a situation where meaningful and rational dialogue has become next to impossible, NEFIS asserted that the situation demands “a mechanism of dialogue and consultations between different communities.” “The move to create new districts should have been taken with the consent of all communities and the state should have consulted different groups before deciding on the issue. Such an arbitrary move would only escalate the crisis and foster trust-deficit between different communities.” Stating that the NEFIS stands for a consultative decision-making process which is acceptable

to all the concerned communities, a number of resolutions were adopted at the seminar, the release said. The resolutions called from lifting of the economic blockade and counter-blockade and the unconditional release of arrested UNC leaders. Though we condemn violence used for any demand, the political prisoners should be released and their demands should be heard. It further called for adoption of conducive and inclusive administrative measures which would take into consideration the interests of all communities in concern. “Administrative measures which will create administrative convenience for the common masses should be taken. But no such measure should overlook the legitimate concerns of any particular community.”

Doordarshan to launch new NE channel new Delhi, DeceMber 10 (ianS): Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu said in an official release on Saturday that a new Doordarshan channel dedicated to the Northeast -- Arun Prabha -- will be launched in January. "The channel would show the richness, variety and diversity of local culture and would seamlessly integrate Northeast with the entire country," the Minister for Information and Broadcasting said here while delivering the concluding remarks at the 28th State Information Ministers Conference at Vigyan Bhawan. He said that the government will provide 90 per cent subsidy for the Northeastern states and 75 per cent subsidy for other states in setting up community radio stations. The community radio station is an extraordinary medium which disseminates information in localized content, he added. Speaking about the Most Film Friendly State Award, incorporated last year in the National Film Awards, Naidu said: "States should focus on this new initiative as it would not only enhance revenue but also boost tourism in the state." He also announced a cash component of Rs one crore for the Most Film Friendly State Award. "Government of India would formulate National Information and Communication Policy in consultation with states for a comprehensive and integrated approach toward communication and information dissemination," the statement said.

India reports fishery subsidies; Aims to protect ‘poor’ fisherfolk NEW DELHI, DECEMBER 10 (THE HINDu): India has notified the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on the subsidies it pays fisherfolk amid demands from a U.S.-led group of nations for a ban on subsidies given for illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing. The move comes even as India has expressed concern over committing to norms at the multilateral level that will impact the livelihood of its subsistence fisherfolk. The filing to the WTO Committee on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures (SCM), shows ‘fishery subsidy schemes’ at the Central-, state- and union territory-levels provided for subsidies worth Rs.284 crore in 2014-15, and they mainly aim to “protect and

Global oil prices have surged to nearly $55 per barrel, following an agreement by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to cut production. OPEC, which accounts for nearly one-third of global oil output, on November 28 reached an agreement to cut output by 1.2 million barrels per day (mbpd) from January 1, its first reduction since 2008. Global oil prices have already surged by 19%since then. Non-OPEC producers are expected to agree to add an output cut of 0.6 million barrels per day at a meeting on December 10 in Vienna. “The price of Brent crude could increase to $50-55 per barrel by March 2017 following OPEC’s move, and if it surges to $60 as some believe, the price of petrol could touch Rs. 80 and diesel Rs. 68 per litre,” the CRISIL report said. CRISIL on its part expects global crude price to remain between $50 per barrel and $55 per barrel for first half of calendar FiRe StatiOnS

year 2017. This could mean that the “price of petrol could rise 5-8 per cent and that of diesel by 6-8 per cent over the next three to four months. In Mumbai, that would mean petrol price could top Rs. 75 per litre compared with Rs. 72 now, and diesel more than Rs. 64 compared with Rs. 60 now,” the report said. Petrol and diesel prices are deregulated in India, which means they are linked to market rates. Oil marketing companies revise their prices every fortnight, depending on global oil rates and the rupee’s movement against dollar. India imports more than three-fourth of its crude oil requirement. So apart from global oil prices, the value of the rupee as well as the margins of oil marketing companies and the various government levies determine the final price of petrol and diesel price in India. Analysts, however, are sceptical over the long-term impact of the OPEC’s move on oil prices. “A cut in production always lifts prices, but the success of the OPEC agreement depends on adherence. Previously, there have been instances of members breaking away from the cartel because of domestic compulsions,” CRISIL said.

holiday from Saturday could deepen the nationwide cash crisis with refilling of ATMs likely to be affected, officials said, potentially impacting millions of Indians struggling to withdraw money for over a month. While Saturday and Sunday are regular weekend holidays, banks will remained closed on Monday for Id-e-Milad. In a normal situation when banks have consecutive holidays, additional cash is supplied to cash logistics firms which are responsible for ATM management. These firms can also collect cash from the currency chests with the country’s banks, officials said. “…At present, there is an acute shortage of cash and we cannot give these companies enough cash even for a day, so how can we give them extra…the situation will be gravely affected,” said a senior executive at a private sector bank. “There will be problems getting cash from ATMs…in a situation where cash is already in short supply, there is a possibility of things getting even tighter,” said Ashwani Rana, vice-president of National Organisation of Bank Workers, an affiliate of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh.

ment’s decision to recall highvalue banknotes, saying shortterm pains will bring big gains in the long run. However, the initial public support for the demonetisation – which the government said was aimed at tackling black money and counterfeit currency -- appeared to be waning with the banks and ATMs failing to dispense enough cash to meet the demand. The cash shortage has also affected Parliament’s winter session with the opposition and ruling parties clashing over the issue, both inside and outside the House. A private sector banker said that although about 95 per cent of the two lakh-odd ATMs have been recalibrated, there is cash shortage due to logistics issue. ATMs are fed only once a day and most of them are running out of money quickly due to heavy withdrawals. Bankers on the condition of anonymity said despite assurances by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the government, they are not getting adequate cash from currency chests to meet the withdrawal pressure on account of pay day. Faced with the cash shortage, banks have imposed their own

limit of Rs 24,000 per week set by RBI. Frustrated with standing in long queues, people at times are venting their anger at bank officials and asking them to compensate them for not being able to keep their promise of providing Rs 24,000 per week to a person, similar to what bank charges when a customer fails to maintain minimum balance in the account. “Because of the acute short supply of cash, and when branches are unable to meet the requirements of cash withdrawals, irritated customers are naturally becoming angry, and annoyed and their anguish is turned towards the staff, officers and managers,” All India Bank Employees’ Association said in a statement. To promote less cash economy, the government has announced slew of measures incentivising payment through digital mode for purchase of petrol, diesel, insurance cover, railway tickets etc. It also waived service tax for payments up to Rs 2,000 made through cards and decided to do away with transaction fee for payment to central government departments and PSUs.

NEW DELHI, DECEMBER 10 (IaNs): Capturing 28.52 per cent of the Indian mobile phone market, South Korean giant Samsung sold maximum number of devices in 2016, followed by Apple iPhone 14.87 per cent and Motorola with 10.75 per cent, a new report said on Saturday. According to ecommerce app Cashify, Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos I9082 was the most traded phone in 2016, capturing 3.02 per cent of the resale/buyback market. “This was followed by the Moto family’s most successful phone of the year, Moto G 16GB (2nd Gen), with 2.71 per cent. Apple iPhone 5s 16GB (factory unlocked) came in third with a 2.34 per cent share,” the report said, while noting device-wise distribution. Other players, such as the OnePlus One 64 GB (1.78 per cent), also made their presence felt. “With a minefield of flagship launches, the resale market picked up pace in the last few months as the number of people queuing up to trade their old smartphones with the latest market entrants went up significantly,” the report stated. With a slew of smartphone launch announcements lined up for 2017, Cashify expects the resale market to show further growth as more and more people become aware of the resale value of their old phones. Recently, Cashify ranked Delhi number one when it came to upgrading smartphones with 19 per cent of online requests generated on the ecommerce app Cashify to sell used smartphones were from the capital.

NAGALAND

‘Peace is not possible ‘Nagas need to programme vigorous defense and promotion of human rights’ without truth and justice’

International Human Rights Day observed ‘Stand up for someone’s rights today’ Kohima, December 10 (mexN): On the 68th anniversary of the International Human Rights Day (December 10), the Naga Peoples’ Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) expressed its solidarity with all the human rights defenders around the world in proclaiming that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”. NPMHR commemorated the day at the de Oriental Grand in Kohima under this year’s theme, ‘Stand up for someone’s rights today.’ A press release from Neingulo Krome, Secretary General, NPMHR, stated that the movement strongly believes “Mankind has made history through the struggle for freedom from exploitation and subjugation. And history of the Naga people has taught us that there are forces both inside and outside the society collaborating in strangulating social progress.” One of the deeper concerns that human rights movements and defenders are now faced with in today’s contemporary world, it said, is the increasing shrinking space of democ-

Kohima, December 10 (mexN): Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) observed the International Human Rights Day in Kohima on December 10. Speaking on the occasion, NVCO President, Kezhokhoto Savi said that human rights are natural rights meaning they are not earned and cannot be denied on the basis of race, creed, ethnicity or gender. “The Government of Nagaland is yet to constitute State Human Rights Commission which itself is amounting to serious human rights violation. Slavery, poverty, physical torture, destruction of property, killing, hunger, sex exploitation, forced labour, child labour, commercial sex exploitation, illiteracy, etc. are against human rights,” he stated. Pointing out that as indigenous people of the land, Article 371A of the Constitution of India provides a special provision to racy everywhere. “The recent arrest and detention of human rights defenders, such as the leaders of the United Naga Council’s President Gaidon Kamei and its Publicity Secretary, S.K. Stephen, by the Manipur Police is another grave example of shrinking space of democracy and the growing intolerance of states against democratic expressions of its citizens,” it maintained. “This case also demonstrates the lack of Political will by the Government of India to respect the rights of Naga Indige-

the Naga people to protect their own way of life, its land and resources, Savi added, “various Naga tribal councils and organisations raising strong voices against certain notified community as an indigenous tribe of Nagaland is simply a demand to protect the rights of indigenous people as indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland.” Savi also maintained that a major theme of the human rights discourse is the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act widely seen in the state as draconian. NVCO Press & Media cell in a press release said that in observance of the International Human Rights Day, Savi reaffirmed, “We (Nagas) need to programme a vigorous defense and promotion of human rights. The churches, educational institutions and colleges are to play an active role in promoting peace, justice and social transformation.”

nous Peoples which is also against the spirit of the various Peace Agreements entered with the various Naga Political Groups (NPGs) and the Government of India.” NPMHR further pointed out that the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act remains in place in many parts of North East India resulting to gross violations of human rights with impunity. “The shrinking democratic space for human rights defenders is a continuing threat and looms

over indigenous peoples’ fight for their ancestral lands and against injustices,” it said citing incidents which happened in different Asian countries. NPMHR also supported AIPP in commemorating and paying rich tributes to all the indigenous human rights defenders who were “viciously silenced.” NPMHR with AIPP salute those who continue to fight for their fundamental and collective rights despite the ominous and imminent danger, the release added.

Nagaland ‘most peaceful for religious minority in India’

MLA Mmhonlumo Kikon speaking at the 9th NE Youth Peace and Cultural Festival.

9th North East Youth Peace and Cultural Festival begins Morung Express News Dimapur | December 10

Unless “our” generation stares into the face of the conflict, “we” will not be able to bring solution that will create potentialities for sustainable development in the region, Member of Legislative Assembly, Mmhonlumo Kikon said today. “We have not talked about it seriously,” he added, speaking as chief guest at the 9th North East Youth Peace and Cultural Festival, organized by Peace Channel and People's Forum for Peace (PFP) under the theme, ‘Building Blocks for Peace’ here today at DBDL Hall, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School campus. It was also a celebration of 9th year of Peace Channel. Calling upon the youth to commit themselves as the warrior of peace, he said, “We should be courageous enough to take control of our destiny and we should not allow the culture of violence and conflict to prevail in this region in our times.” Once committed, Kikon maintained, “We will be used or using our own geneses, our own thinking to address in our own level the various aspects to bring about changes in our region” Recalling the tumultuous early 1990s, he said most of young generation at that time grew up psychologically scarred during the period. “I must say that the culture of violence in which my generation grew up was something which has disturbed us a lot, challenged us a lot and spoke to us,” he maintained, adding his work to change the en-

While echoing the value of living in harmony, leaders of different minority groups in Dimapur said that Nagaland is one of the peaceful and safest states for religious minorities in India. They were speaking at the 9th North East Youth Peace and Cultural Festival organized by Peace Channel in collaboration with People’s Forum for Peace which kick started today at DBDL Hall, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School Dimapur campus. Speaking on the occasion representing the Muslim community, Ahidur Rehman asserted that Nagaland is the most “peaceful" State in India. “You separate the political problem out of society and see whether there is any other problems or not. People are all united,” he added. Fundamentalists are present in every religion but the sane people should overcome their influences, he maintained further advocating inter-faith interaction by suggesting visitation of each other's religious institutions to bring about better understanding and enabling peace and harmony. Rehman's assertion was affirmed by HS Aluwalia, speaking on behalf of the Sikh community. He said that the State, devoid of any religious riots, was most peaceful. “When Muslim or Sikhs or other mivironment of violence was related to such events. It is in this context, he recalled a conversation with then Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2004 while submitting a representation on IndoNaga peace process. As a young man, what was his expectation (from the peace process)? Vajpayee asked him. Kikon recalled answering that though he wants to become a poet-politician like him, but given the circumstances that he grew up and the daily harassment from the culture of violence, it was difficult and unless peace comes, he would not have the opportunity. He further asserted that peace is not only absence of war and said the definition is changing due to his understanding of why there is conflict in the region for a long time and why we have not been able to address it so far. “Peace is not possible without truth and justice. That is where politics and commitment should lie towards the issue of peace,” he stated. Thus, whenever Kikon encounters “political player and decision maker”, he asks them about their definition of self-determination and what were the

Kohima, December 10 (mexN): The Officers’ Hill (Thegabakha) Colony Council, Kohima submitted a five-point representation to the Governor of Nagaland, PB Acharya concerning issues within its jurisdiction on December 9. One of the five points was an appeal to pressure the department concerned to expedite the process of condemnation of the government quarter for construction and extension of Government Middle School classroom. The Officers’ Hill Colony Council has submitted repeated appeal and representation to the Government through the department concerned in this regard, according to the representation. However, it has not received any response, it added. The Colony Council and school authority also appreciated the Governor’s wife, Kavita Acharya, for adopting the school and hoped that through her contribution and service the school will be developed in time. The Colony Council, therefore, with a vision to upgrade the school into High School made the appeal to

the Governor. The council also requested the Governor to direct the department concerned to repair the Ladies Mile Road at the earliest. The representation pointed out that Officers' Hill Colony is frequently visited by VIPs and VVIPs; however, the condition of the said road is “pathetic”. The representation further appealed to the Governor to provide financial assistance for construction of Panchayat Hall. It said that the Officers' Hill Colony Council celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2015. But, due to fund constraint, the colony does not have a proper Panchayat Hall till date. The fourth point of the representation requested for bigger and larger vehicles for collection and dumping of garbage for Officers’ Hill Colony. It was informed that a pick-up truck (Bolero) for collection and dumping of garbage has been provided by KMC and maintained by the Sanitation Committee of Officers’ Hill Colony Council. The colony is however in need of a big-

ger truck to fulfill the vision to declare its jurisdiction as environment friendly, and garbage free zone, the council added. In this, it requested the Governor to recommend for provision of a larger garbage truck to meet the ever growing demand of the public. The Officers’ Hill Colony Council also requested the Governor for appointment of a daily wage employee to take care of the Pay & Use toilet constructed through community contribution and fund from Swachh Bharat Mission. The council with a vision to provide facilities even to the differently abled persons has a toilet meant for them and also employs a differently abled person. However, the revenue generated is not sufficient for the salary and maintenance of the Pay & Use toilet, it added. The representation was signed by Khrielakuo Sekhose, Chairman; Ruokuolhouvo Miachieo, Secretary; Vilie Shuya, Gaon Bura; Y Yanthan, Member, Advisory Board of Officers’ Hill Colony Council.

norities were targeted elsewhere, it remained largely unaffected and we feel safe and live without any disturbances in the state,” he added. Come and see how people live in harmony in Nagaland, he asserted. Meanwhile, KK Paul, representing the Hindu community said in every religion, superstition should be exorcised with rationality and spirituality. "Peace will come from the heart. When you are truly religious, there is no hate but only love," he added, ardently calling for humanism as the main criteria for religion. “If you love your religion, you can love other religion too.” Historically religion is ‘used’ to create violence, Fr. Chacko said. "Religion is simply human seeing divinity of God. We Identify God in many forms, Learn to appreciate the differences," he added. Rev. RP Murry said selfishness divides us though we are one in Genesis. “We must recognize and honor each religion, but practically we could not do so as we are not ‘pucca’ religious.” Representing the Jain community, Ajay Sethi said that dogmatism and divisive mentality often act as a stumbling block for harmony. We must first try to become a good human being, he added. The festival began with lighting of peace lamp by leaders from different religious community.

values that drive their leadership in order for him to follow them. “If we aspire for meaningful peace then we must live by it. We must have values which would be in harmony with that aspiration.” Else it would be aimless and a game of power struggle, which has disrupted life and people history across the world. He however maintained that taking the role of a peace making is not so easy, citing the instances of Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi – two foremost messenger and practitioner of peace and non-violence who were assassinated. Kikon also urged the Peace Channel to make it bigger and spread across the region saying it should not be confine to a district and state. “Sensitize about different culture, bring people across the region together and foster relationship interaction between various communities.” This way we can challenge the ethnocentric extremism exercised with self-perceived supremacy, he said. A systematic approach is needed to bring peace and a peace makers must have values which will be in harmony with the aspi-

ration for peace, he added. Building blocks of peace Reflecting on the theme, the special guest, Prof. Dr. Suresh Phathare, Director of CSRD, Ahmednagar said that blocks can be used for creating barriers as well as filling the gaps and building bridges. Negative blocks like caste, religion, discrimination, sexism, hatred and so on should be replaced with positive blocks like harmony, peace and love, he added. He encouraged the young participants who are the ambassadors of peace to be passionate and contagious in spreading peace. Phyobemo Lotha, UNVDYC, NYK Dimapur said peace begins with a smile and smile lights up a room. Stating that we face an environment full of violence and tension, he said young people should play the role of agents of peace. “There is a greater need to create a culture of peace and stop conflict.” Earlier, Dr. Fr. C.P. Anto, Director, Peace Channel said the main objectives of the festival is to promote inter religious harmony through inter faith meet and also to preserve the cultural art forms through performance during the cultural festival.

My daughter has special needs and she’s a fashion model Kathy Radigan Writer, Blogger, Creator of, My dishwasher’s possessed

ast Saturday my beautiful teenage daughter and I spent the day in a crowded New York hotel ballroom getting her ready to model in a fashion show. This might not seem that unusual, given that our daughter is 5’8” and has adored makeup, shoes, and clothes almost from infancy. One of her first complete sentences was, “I need my Chanel perfume,” and she has always loved the pictures in Vogue and Glamour. That she would like modeling didn’t really come as a surprise. But we never thought she would have this opportunity. Unlike most of the other girls and women who were busy getting ready to model new fashions all over Manhattan, our daughter has significant special needs. Lizzy was only two years old when it was strongly suggested by a pediatric neurologist that she have an MRI. The doctor said he was not one to routinely order this test

for a child so young, but the size of her head and the shape of her eyes concerned him. My husband and I had been deeply worried that something was profoundly wrong with our daughter for more than a year and had already taken her to every doctor her pediatrician recommended. Each visit ended with us being told that she most likely just needed some speech therapy and she would catch up. But Lizzy had been getting speech therapy for six months and was making very spotty progress. Now a top specialist was telling me that he saw something wrong, too. I was beyond scared. Her MRI revealed major brain damage, but we have never learned the origin or extent of it. We have never been given a name for the disorder that causes so much havoc in every aspect of our daughter’s development. Though she is 14 years old, cognitively Lizzy has more in common with a three- or four-year-

old child. She attends a school for children with special needs and will most likely always require full-time care. Yet despite of her limitations, Lizzy was one of two special needs models walking the runway that day in creations by designer Sharon Gary-Dill. Gary-Dill said it was important to her to include people with special needs. In her work, she tries to counter “the stigma that society has placed on them. I want the world

to see that that they can be glamorous and stylish just like anyone else in professional shows.” We had learned of this opportunity over the summer when special needs advocate, Norma Stanley contacted me after reading a piece I did about Lizzy on Huffington Post Parents. Stanley’s 28-year-old daughter, Sierra, has been modeling for a year-and-a-half and was the other special needs model wearing one of Gary-Dill’s designs.

I hesitated to say yes. I knew Lizzy would love the idea of it, but I really wasn’t sure if she would be able to handle a long day of hair, makeup, and a lot of rushing to wait around for hours. And to be honest, I wasn’t sure if I was up to the stares and questions that sometimes accompany us when we are at events that are not exclusively for people with special needs. As it turned out I had nothing to fear. Every model, designer, makeup artist and hair stylist was professional and lovely toward the both of us. They treated Lizzy as just another model and that in turn helped my daughter rise to the occasion. She enjoyed having her makeup and hair done and had no problem with the craziness backstage and the last-minute decision to change the hat she would wear. She loved seeing the different clothes and the women and girls modeling them. When it was time for her to walk, she confidently strutted her stuff, and she loved the applause and cheers she got. She earned her place in the limelight.

Imperative sentences (orders and requests) are used to tell someone to do something. Here, the girl asks the little boy whether they could play together. She is asking him a question. It is an interrogative question.

ohn Eliot (1604–1690) was known in his own day as “the apostle to the Indians.” Eliot labored in New England as a minister to the colonial population, but he was simultaneously engaged in equipping Native Christians for evangelistic outreach to other Indians. At age 67, he published a small book, with a long title, Indian Dialogues, for Their Instruction in that great Service of Christ, in calling home their Country-men to the Knowledge of God, and of Themselves, and of Jesus Christ. The book presents an all-Indian cast on a wilderness stage, with the Native Christian settlement of Natick — the first “praying town” — portrayed as a model community, a hub for sending out evangelistic forays by Native Christians, and a place of pilgrimage for Native enquirers into the Christian life. In this fascinating book, we find many of Eliot’s responses to a diverse set of objections, misunderstandings, and clarifying questions that he and other evangelists encountered from both Native enquirers and Native critics of Christianity. In Indian Dialogues, the Native evangelists exhibit what Richard Baxter called the quintessential work of an evangelist: pointing others to the “amiable excellencies of God.” Both Baxter and Eliot believed that the essence of evangelism is to persuade and call unconverted persons to admire God forever as their Creator, Redeemer, and Lord.

was in. And then, that the Lord should open unto me a possibility of escape, that a ransom and remedy might be found by the infinite wisdom and mercy of God. And that Jesus Christ had not only accomplished that great work, but offered the fruit and benefit of it to me, and called me to rest in him, and to betrust my soul with him for pardon of all my sins, and for eternal life in Jesus Christ. Peneovot goes on to say that “these things are a matter of my admiration, and shall be to all eternity. My life remaining shall be spent in admiring and in obeying and suffering, as you have now taught me.” He then notes how Christ “did not forbear to offer [his] precious life for me” and resolves, “I will, by his grace assisting, admire at this mercy forever.”

God’s Mercy and Grace One of the conversations of Indian Dialogues concludes with a Native named Peneovot confessing his sinfulness to the Christian Waban: “The greatness of God’s majesty and power, against whom I — a finite poor worm — sinned, doth most amaze me. I pray help me further to understand the great majesty of God.” A bit later in the narrative, Waban tells Peneovot, “True, no creature is able to deliver us. Vain is the help of man or angel. . . . None but God himself can do it, and your heart will yield that God himself can do it.” A bit later again in the story, Peneovot tells Waban, “Your discourse doth heighten my admiration.” Peneovot claims now to recognize the wonderful things of God’s law, and of my eternal condemnation by it, my helpless and hopeless condition that I

Awakened to God’s Word In the third dialogue, after a Christian named William concludes some teaching about the nature of the Bible and its importance for the Christian way of life, the still unconverted sachem Philip says, “Your discourse doth breed in my heart an admiration at that excellent book.” Similarly, a seeker named Penitent tells the Christian John Speene, “My soul admires to see the great use that is to be made of the Word of God, which doth engage my soul more and more, to the frequent use of the Scriptures.” From the Bible, Penitent has learned of his sin, God’s wrath, and the refuge available to his soul in Jesus Christ. He is “filled with an abhorrence of myself, and wonderment of God’s patience, to suffer such a wretch as I am to live.” Near the end of the book, a converted Penitent testifies, “I now am

happy being united with Christ. Oh blessed change! I am in admiration at this. I admire the grace of God to a dead, lost, damned sinner. I am come into a new world.” A bit later still, the newly Christian Penitent aspires aloud, “I would to God that all my people were as I am, and tasted and felt what I have found. But that is not yet so. I desire to bring them to be the Lord’s people.”

admirable specimen of the grace of God in him.” The young Jesus’s ability to answer questions of “Doctors” and “Scholars” in the temple was admirable. The adult Jesus was “an admirable Example of patience, diligence, faithfulness, and self-denyal, that spared not his own body, though full of infirmities, to do good to others, and to do and suffer what God called him to do and suffer.”

God’s Wisdom and Works Years later, in a longer book on the sufferings of Christ, Eliot urged Native and New English readers to admire the wisdom and works of God. The “infinite wise and merciful” providence of God is to be admired, even “adored,” he said. This seemed especially true for Eliot concerning events that were initial disappointments or seeming defeats, but then were eventually appreciated for what good came of them. The death of Christ is the epitome of this kind of divine irony. Regarding the sealing of Christ’s tomb with a large stone and the stationing of soldiers to guard it, Eliot wrote, “But herein we may behold the admirable wisdom of God, and folly of man, that the very way which they took to prevent his Resurrection, was a means to make his Resurrection most evident and manifest unto all; the Watchmen were witnesses of it.” Throughout the book, Eliot posed various aspects of the nature and activities of Jesus for the reader’s admiration. The hypostatic union of “God and man in one person,” Jesus Christ, was a “mystery eternally to be admired.” The wisdom and obedience of Jesus at age 12 was, said Eliot, “an

The Lamb of God The book’s penultimate chapter concludes Eliot’s copious survey of Christ’s suffering. After noting that Jesus was “obedient unto death,” Eliot concludes the final section of that chapter with this exclamation: The Lamb of God is slain, the Sacrifice for sin is offered and accepted; Isaac is sacrificed . . . not only in will and purpose, as Abraham, and Isaac did, but in real performance. This hath God the Father, and God the Son performed for our sakes, to redeem and save us. Admire! Admire! Admire! Unto all eternity admire! What a delightful duty — what a light and marvelous burden it is to admire our triune God. May he grant us today to steadily grow in joyful admiration of all that he is and has accomplished for us in Christ Jesus. May he captivate our hearts more and more while opening our mouths to tell of his majesty and his “amiable” ways. Oh, come let us adore him! Great news from Nazareth

Scripture: Luke 1:26-80 and Matthew 1:18-25 1. Mary visits Elizabeth: Six months had quietly passed by for Zacharias and Elizabeth while they awaited the birth of John, the forerunner of the Messiah. One day there arrived a surprise visitor from Nazareth, a little hill town of Galilee some sixty-two miles away. It was Elisabeth's young cousin, Mary, and marvellous was the story she had to tell. Though living in quite a poor home in Nazareth, Mary was a descendant of the royal house of David. She was betrothed to be married to a good man named Joseph, a carpenter, who was also of the line of David. Both their families having moved up to Nazareth years before. The time of their marriage had been set, but Mary was living with her parents, or perhaps with relatives. for her father and mother still are nowhere mentioned in the Bible story and may already have been dead. 2. Gabriel's announcement to Mary: One day Gabriel, the angel who had spoken to Zacharias in the temple, appeared to the young maiden. His previous commission for God had been an honoured one, but no angel ever bore so wondrous a message as he now brought. Gabriel began, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you." Startled at God's special concern for her, she waited wonderingly as the angel continued, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end." Ever Since the prophet Isaiah had penned his inspired promise of the Messiah, "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace," every maiden in David's line had hoped that she might be chosen as the mother. Now at last, to this

trusting maiden came the word that she was to be the mother of the Redeemer of men and the eternal king. If Zacharias was staggered by the knowledge that his son was to be the forerunner of the Messiah, it is little wonder that Mary unable to comprehend the mystery of the Incarnation of the Son of God. "How can this be?" was all she could say. Gently, and without reproof, the angel explained, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God." 3. Incarnation is a reality: Many questions have been raised about the Incarnation. Some dismissed it as something akin to birth of sons of gods in heathen religions. Others have accepted the accusation of some of the wicked rulers of the Jews that Mary was seduced during the days of her betrothal. But the Bible cannot be dismissed as myth, or worse, a deliberate falsehood. If the story of the Incarnation is not true then Jesus was an impostor. His first followers were utterly deceived, and Christianity is the falsest of all false religions. But the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus and the birth of the Christian church, which make up the Gospel record, attest that it is true and that it was indeed Emmanuel, "God with us." 4. Mary's song- the Magnificat: Mary's first thought, after the departure of the angel, was to visit Elizabeth in Judea, for she knew of the angel's visit to Zacharias and they should be told at once of the revelation that had now come to her. So quickly she set out on her journey. When the cousins met, both were carried away with joy at the honour that God had bestowed upon them-the one destined to be the mother of the Messiah, and the other the mother of His herald and forerunner. In a loud voice Elizabeth exclaimed: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored,

that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy." As Mary listened to the inspired language of her cousin, there burst from her lips a rapturous song of adoration and praise, in which she gathered all that God's prophets of earlier days had said concerning the work of the Christ-Child she was to bear. In later days this song of praise came to be known as the "Magnificat" because it begins, "My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior." For three months Mary stayed with her cousin, and then, just before the forerunner of Jesus was to born, she returned to her home in Nazareth.

5. The birth of John: When the appointed time came, Elizabeth gave birth to a son, Just as the angel had told her husband, and naturally all her relatives and friends in the village came along to rejoice with her. The eighth day was an important day in the life of a Hebrew child, for it was then that his name formally announced and he was formally adopted, by circumcision, into the nation of Israel. Many guests were invited to the ceremony and, as was to be expected, they wanted to help the parents to choose the right name for the little one. All quickly came to the conclusion that he should be named after his father Zacharias meant, "Remembered of God," and certainly God had remembered the prayers of His two godly servants! When, however, they made known their unanimous suggestion to Elisabeth she at once objected "Not so," she said; "but he shall be called John." Everyone was puzzled at her definiteness and protested that there is no one in the family who had that name. If it was not to be Zacharias, at least it ought to be a name which was in the family! Up to this point Zacharias had not been included in the discussion, for be had not spoken since he was visited by the angel. But now the relatives gathered round and by signs asked him to give the final word. Motioning for the writing tablet, which had become a familiar object during his months of dumbness, he wrote without hesitation, "His name is John," as the angel had instructed him months

before. And to the amazement of all that in the house, as soon as he had written the words, tongue was loosed and he cried out in praise to God. Quickly the news spread abroad, everyone in the village and far beyond heard of the miraculous healing of the old priest. "What manner of child shall this be?" they said one to another. 6. Waiting for the birth of the promised Messiah: Meanwhile Mary had arrived back home in Nazareth. Until now she had said nothing to anyone but her cousin. But as the time of her marriage drew near, Joseph was told of the sacred responsibility that was to be his. At first he found it hard to believe the news, so God sent an angel, probably Gabriel, to him in a dream to assure him that Mary's miracle-born Son would be none other than the long-promised Redeemer whom they were to name Jesus, which means, "the salvation of Jehovah," for, said the angel of the Lord, "He will save his people from their sins." Obediently Joseph accepted the honoured part he was to play in caring for the promised Child and His mother. And following the wedding celebrations, he took Mary into his home and tenderly ministered to her as she awaited the birth of the holy Babe. In conclusion, whatever a believer's lot, he or she should be willing to echo Mary's sublime song, "I am the Lord's servant, may it be to me as you have said." The essence of living faith is to accept one's circumstances, obey God's leading and live joyfully with the confidence that God's time and way are good, acceptable and perfect. Like Zacharias and Elizabeth or Joseph and Mary, there are simple, humble, quiet folds, men and women of prayer and devotion through whom God works in miraculous ways. This Christmas season dedicate yourself to glorify God in obedience to his commands. Christmas season is a special time to speak to our dark, decaying and busy world the message of hope, love, peace, reconciliation and redemption through Christ our Lord and Saviour. I pray and hope to see you all again next year. Have a blessed Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.

‘God is Good’: Bill Johnson Challenges Believers to Dig Deeper

O

Mark Dejesus | Charisma Magazine

ne of the things I have felt strongly about is that in the days we live in, there will be an intensified war over the subject of the goodness of God. Those outside the church will question His goodness outright, while many within the body of Christ will question it in subtle ways. Many Christians have hit deep disappointments, so messages that help point us back to the divine goodness of our Father is incredibly important. Bill Johnson's newest book, God Is Good: He's Better Than You Think, contains many nuggets that cause me to underline and ponder them over and over. Bill has great perspectives that make you think and rethink. At times, I wish Bill Johnson would dig into some of the more difficult Scriptures that confuse people, like the book of Job, but it's clear that dissecting those subjects in a deep manner is not what forms his unique identity and calling. In addition, the simplicity with which he sees things can be very refreshing. I am learning more and more that knowledge can just puff us up if it's not connected to heart-experience. In addition, our desire for depth in theology can remove a childlike faith that embraces mystery but relentlessly pursues more. I appreciate Bill's focus to trust, no matter what, and keep his eyes fixed on God's goodness. It's an example for us all. This book will challenge those who do not think healing is for today or have given up on growing in healing. Living a life that believes in the miraculous is certainly a challenge. But it must have a premise that lives in the eternal goodness of our Father. Here are some thoughts I highlighted and am pondering: • Saying God allowed a terrible thing to happen is pretty much the same as saying He caused it. • "It's not the belief in His goodness that threatens us. It's our definition of this goodness that has brought much debate and sometimes conflict and turmoil into the family of God" (p. 32). • "Creating doctrines of no miracles today not only contradicts His Word, it is a sneaky way to avoid responsibility" (p. 32). • His brief teaching on Eph. 3:20-21 is insightful on the power of our prayers and the impact of our imagination in relating to God. • "We will know our mind is renewed when the impossible looks logical" (p. 38). • I was challenged when he addressed how the church pushes most great promises in Scripture to the millennium, removing us from experiencing great manifestations of the kingdom right now. • "God's people are to be known for their hope" (p. 98). • "The one with the most hope will always have the most influence" (p. 99). • Speaking to today's culture, he says, "Unsanctified mercy has taken the place of true mercy" (p. 107). • The church experiencing many parallels to what Israel faced in the dessert was spot-on. One of the best quotes I pull from this book is one that resonates with my heart to see God restore our relationship capacity in the church: "It's a Father's kingdom. In other words, all conversation about kingdom is about family. And once we've left the subject of family, we've left the subject of kingdom" (p. 164). More insights: • "It's a theological crime to change the intent and message of the Scriptures in order to make me feel comfortable with my ministry experience" (p. 170). • "What we don't know is sometimes as important as what we do know" (p. 187). Bill Johnson discusses his father getting cancer and passing away, a story that brings me to tears every time I read or hear it. How Bill and the rest of his family responded to that illness and loss is an incredible testimony of engaging God's goodness in the midst of having it challenged in what you see. I've been challenged to my core regarding the goodness of God through many situations and trials that have come in my life. Some challenges have gripped me so deeply I wasn't sure I could make it. But leaning hard into the simplicity that God is good and the devil is bad has anchored me to a deeper trust. I don't blame or claim Him in regard to the storms in my life, but I look to use everything that happens to me for God's glory. I appreciate the fact that Bill is living a life that dwells in God's goodness and takes responsibility to spread that goodness while undoing the works of the devil all around the world.

Footballer who survived Colombian plane tragedy was reading Bible

A bookmark had been inserted next to Psalm 63, which talks about being safe in the shadow of God’s wings and about thinking of God in bed. Gareth Davies

A

footballer who survived the Colombian plane tragedy was reading a Bible passage about 'being safe in the shadow of your wings' before the crash. The bible, belonging to Chapecoense centre back Helio Neto, was found at the scene of the crash and has been handed to the footballer's wife. His wife said Neto, who is still fighting for his life in hospital, is deeply religious and takes the religious scripture with him everywhere. A bookmark had been inserted next to Psalm 63, which talks about being safe in the shadow of God's wings and about thinking of God in bed. In detail it says: 'On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night; Because you have been my help; Then I will rejoice in the shadow of your wings. 'My soul follows you closely; Your right hand upholds me.' Video footage shows journalist Roberto Cabrini at the scene of the wreckage and noticing the book, with a note inside saying it belongs to the defender, who is in a critical condition. The reporter can be seen visibly shaking as he realises what it is.

He reads with a shaky voice the name that is printed on the inside of the cover, as behind him we can see the wreckage of the crash. Mangled parts of the plane can be seen in the background and Cabrini is later seen taking the bible to the wife of Neto, who smiles as she realises what she is being given. Neto's condition has been described as 'delicate' by doctors who said they regularly have to 'stabilise' him as he has a 'serious pulmonary infection.' His wife, Simone, said Neto has a lot of faith in God and takes the bible with him on all his trips. Simone had previously told how her husband had told her on the morning of the flight that he had had a dream it had crashed. As she received the book, Simone said: 'It's the first thing he takes when he travels, and here are his annotations, I'm very grateful to have it back.' Neto has so far undergone extensive surgery on his lungs, skull, knees and wrists. His family say they hope he will make a full recovery. A total of 71 people lost their lives when the British-made Avro RJ85 aircraft came down en route to Medellin, where Brazilian side Chapecoense were due to play in the Copa Sudamericana final.

Nobel laureates and leaders gather to push child slavery onto the global agenda

NEW DELHI, DEcEmbEr 10 (THomsoN rEuTErs FouNDaTIoN): Seven-year-old Siyam stands speechless when asked what he would like to do when he grows up. He stares blankly as if being asked the most ridiculous of questions. The boy, dressed in a faded red t-shirt with a picture of a superhero and tattered blue shorts, has never been to school and cannot see a world beyond the narrow, filthy lanes of the slum settlement in New Delhi where he has lived in all his life. For as long as he can remember, he has stayed at home to look after his four younger siblings while his mother cleans homes and his father works on building sites for a daily wage. "I want to go to school like the other children," he says eventually, standing outside his one-room home in the south Delhi slum. "I want to wear that nice blue uniform and learn." The chances are slim for Siam. He is one of 260 million children and adolescents out of school globally - and at risk of being forced into child labor or even slavery unless governments take action, say Nobel laureates and global leaders meeting in Delhi over the weekend. The summit - which brings together figures such as Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands - aims to push child rights onto the global agenda, said organizer and Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi. "It is a paradox that on one hand the world is progressing

Children have right to be heard in decisions affecting them, says Princess of Monaco

so fast. Never before have we been so wealthy. But on the other hand, children are facing hardships never faced before," Satyarthi told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. "Children are being enslaved, trafficked, they are working as child laborers, they are being used for prostitution. In this situation, we want to create a strong moral platform to raise a voice which cannot be ignored by governments, intergovernmental agencies and society in general." A FAILURE OF HUMANITY There are 168 million child laborers across the world, with more than half involved in hazardous work in sectors such as

agriculture, mining, construction, manufacturing and services, says the International Labour Organization (IL). Despite the fact that many people believe slavery no longer exists, the IL estimates that 5.5 million of these children are enslaved -- born into servitude, trafficked for sex work, or trapped in debt bondage or forced labor. Most work in the farming sector - toiling in cotton, sugarcane and rice paddy fields where they are often exposed to pesticides and risk injury from sharp tools and heavy equipment. Other are employed in manufacturing - confined to poorly lit, barely ventilated

rooms in slums, embroidering clothes, weaving carpets, making matchlocks or even fireworks. Children also work in restaurants and hotels, washing dishes and chopping vegetables, or in middle-class homes, cleaning and scrubbing floors. Jose Ramos Horta, former East Timor president and one of 14 Nobel Peace Prize winners attending the two-day summit, said he hoped to influence governments, companies, academics, judges and public opinion and mobilizes action to end the scourge. "In the 21st century the notion of a child being enslaved or being forced to work is just

NEW DELHI, DEcEmbEr 10 (IaNs): Calling on world leaders to collectively fight for the rights of children, Princess Charlene of Monaco on Saturday said children have the right to participate in decisions affecting them. "We should bear in mind that children have a right to be heard and a right to participate in decisions that affect them. We should invest in children, allow them to speak and equip then with the knowledge and understanding of their rights," said Charlene addressing the "Laureates and Leaders for Children Summit" here. The Princess is among a host of global leaders and Nobel Laureates participating in the two-day summit at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Organised by Nobel laureate and child rights activists Kailash Satyarthi, the summit aims towards building a strong moral platform for protecting children from violence, and ensuring a world where children are free to be just children. "I hope that the summit will capture the world's imagination and determination in promorally unacceptable and is an indictment of us all, of all of humanity," Ramos Horta told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. "This failure to end child labor is a failure of everyone, including those in richer countries, but we see that if we can tackle the root causes such as poverty and invest in education, for example, we can make a difference." Ramas Horta highlighted approaches in Brazil, where poor families are given money if they send their daughters to school, and in India, where a midday meal is given to children as an incentive to their poor families to keep them in class.

viding the children what they deserve. Ensuring children's rights require more leadership and action," she said. "It requires giving voice to the unheard. We owe our children - the most vulnerable citizen of any society - a life free from violence and pain. We owe our children a bright future, a future where they are empowered to shape," said the Princes. "There is need for the world leaders to come together, the foundations and organisations fighting for children rights must come together. Tomorrow is a promise, we have to act today, act now," she said. The former Olympic swimmer also pointed to the menace of drowning. "Drowning is one of the major causes of accidental deaths across the globe including India," she said and elaborated on the work carried out by the Princess Charlene Foundation which seeks to raise public awareness about the dangers of water and teach children both water safety techniques and how to swim.

"CRISIS IN THE MAKING" Experts say education is key to ending child labor and slavery, but budgets for education across most of the world are too meager to keep children in school, especially when poverty prevails and families need to send their children to work. Research from the Education Commission, a global organization, says developing countries should increase expenditure on education to nearly 6 percent of their Gross Domestic Product by 2030. It also shows that by 2030 there will be 1.6 billion young people globally, yet on current trends, half of them - 800 million - will not receive a secondary level education.

This could be a "crisis in the making", both for the child who misses out and for the global economy, say experts. Julia Gillard, former Australian prime minister and chair of the Global Partnership for Education said education would be a key topic at the summit. "There is a dynamic relationship between slavery and education. Children who are in school are likely to have some protective factors around them, which means it is least likely that they will be trafficked or drawn into slavery style situations," said Gillard. "I hope this weekend mobilizes a whole network behind the kind of advocacy we need on education."

Tyagi sent to CBI custody, blames Rs 136 crore in cash, 209 kg gold Sushma Swaraj successfully PMO for changed specifications seized from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka undergoes kidney transplant

NEW DELHI, DEcEmbEr 10 (IaNs): The changed specification of VVIP helicopters, especially the reduced the service ceiling were made under the advice of the Prime Minister Office, former IAF chief S.P. Tyagi on Saturday told a court, which sent him to the custody of the CBI till December 14 in the Rs 3,767-crore AgustaWestland helicopter deal case. "Then PMO advised to keep the minimum mandatory requirement of the service ceiling of the helicopters to 4,500 metres (from the earlier 6,000 metres)," Tyagi's defence counsel N. Hariharan told the court while opposing the Central Bureau of Investigation's plea seeking custodial interrogration of the accused. However putting aside the submissions, Metropolitan Magistrate Sujit Saurabh allowed the CBI to quiz Tyagi, his cousin Sanjeev Tyagi alias Julie Tyagi and Delhibased lawyer Gautam Khaitan till December 14 even as the agency sought 10 days custody to unearth the bribery charges, saying a huge amount was routed to India through various companies. "Considering the serious nature of the allegation and gravity of the matter, I am of the considered opinion that police custody of the accused is required for fair investigation," said the magistrate after a two-hour-long argument between counsel of the CBI and the accused. The agency told the court that crucial information was collected from three countries - Italy, Switzerland and Mauritius - via letters rogatory and the accused are required to be confronted with it to unearth the larger conspiracy in the deal. Telling the court that regular meetings were taking place between senior officials of AgustaWestland and S.P. Tyagi with the help of Sanjeev Tyagi, the CBI has alleged that a conspiracy was hatched to reduce the service ceiling of the helicopters after which AgustaWestland became eligible to supply a dozen helicopters for VVIP flying duties. It told the court that the words "at least twin engine" were inserted in the amendment proposal in 2005 for procuring VVIP helicopters to bring AgustaWestland into the eligibility criteria, adding that the changes were made deliberately as AgustaWestland helicopters had three engines and a service ceiling of 4,500 metres. Claiming innocence in the case, the former IAF chief's defence counsel, Hariharan apprised the court that it was a collective decision to procure VVIP helicopters. Denying the charges, he opposed the request of custodial interrogation, saying that the probe agency had not given any specific and vital point for seeking remand. Countering the CBI allegations, Tyagi said that, as IAF chief 2004-2007, he had nothing to do with the deal and the decision was taken collectively in in consultation with then Defence Ministry, the Special Protection Group and the PMO. The decision came during the tenure of Manmohan Singh but was axed in January 2013 when the corruption allegations surfaced. The CBI told court that in 1999, the government decided to phase out the old helicopters as they were not fit to reach high-altitude areas, and the Defence Ministry in 2002 issued global tenders for procuring new VVIP helicopters in which 11 companies participated including AgustaWestland. However, AgustaWestland could not qualify for the shortlisted companies as it could not meet the eligibility criteria. "Therefore a conspiracy was hatched by the accused person to help AgustaWestland win the chopper contract by making change in the operational requirements," contended the CBI, saying Italian nationals and middlemen Carlo Gerosa and Guido Haschke were in constant touch with Tyagi's cousin to influence the bidding, and also accessed crucial information. All the accused, companies included, were booked for criminal conspiracy, cheating and under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

cHENNaI/bENgaLuru, DEcEmbEr 10 (IaNs): Taxmen on Saturday recovered 177 kg of gold and Rs 130 crore -- of which Rs 34 crore was in new 2,000 rupee notes -- in the biggest ever seizure in the country from three Tamil Nadu businessmen, including a government contractor, officials said. In separate raids in Karnataka, taxmen seized Rs 5.7 crore in new 2,000 notes, Rs 90 lakh in old denomination and 32 kg of gold and jewellery from a secret locker in a bathroom, officials said in Bengaluru. As much as Rs 24 crore in Rs 2,000 notes was found stashed inside a car in Vellore. The seized cash will be deposited with the

Reserve Bank of India. The Income Tax department said recoveries were on on the third day of raids on three businessmen -- J. Shekhar Reddy, Srinivasalu and Prem. The big fish is said to be Red-

dy, from whose car the money was seized on Saturday. He is a contractor and has executed works for the Tamil Nadu government. He was also a Board Member of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD). On Saturday, the Andhra Pradesh government removed him from the post following the raids and the seizure. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Friday said the IT department had seized Rs 96.89 crore cash in 500 and 1,000

rupee notes, and Rs 9.63 crore in new 2,000 currency along with gold weighing 127 kg worth approximately Rs 36.29 crore. Searches were carried on at the premises of casino operators and bullion traders in Hubballi and Chitradurga districts of the state following a tip-off that black money was being converted into white through laundering and hoarding. "When teams of sleuths searched 15 places in the two districts, (the) hawala operator was found converting old notes and hoarding bullion using demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes," the official said. Incriminating documents related to the illegal activities were also recovered during the raids and sent for analysing and investigating their content for evidence. This is the second major haul of currency and gold this month in Karnataka. On December 1, tax sleuths seized Rs 6 crore in cash and 7 kg gold from the residences of two state government engineers in Bengaluru.

NEW DELHI, DEcEmbEr 10 (IaNs): External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Saturday successfully underwent a scheduled kidney transplant at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here and will need at least a week to properly recover, hospital's Director M.C. "The surgery was successful and both, the donor and the recipient, have recovered from the general anaesthesia now. Both of them have been shifted to ICU to be monitored as part of the post-operative procedure," Misra told IANS. Misra said the procedure began at 9 a.m. and lasted till 2.30 p.m. The surgery of both, the donor and the recipient, went on for 90 minutes each.A dedi cated team of 50 medical staff was required for the entire procedure.

Several senior doctors were involved such as M. Minz, V.K Bansal and Preet Mohinder Singh among others under the leadership of Director M.C Misra. The three-hour surgery was performed at the Cardio Thoracic and Neuro Sciences Centre of the hospital. The 64-year-old, who has been in and out of AIIMS for the last few months, was admitted to the hospital on November 7. Swaraj on November 16 said in a tweet that she was admitted to AIIMS because of a kidney failure. According to Misra, Swaraj will take at least 7-10 days to get discharged.

Cashless queues and a Million Pound note Saeed Naqvi IANS

Consider this very plausible rumour I picked up at the Times Lit Fest in Mumbai: Some Bollywood bright sparks are developing scripts around demonetisation in doublequick time. One of them has, in a moment of inspiration, turned to the 1954 Gregory Peck classic, the Million Pound Note, to enable the storyline. The film is based on a Mark Twain masterpiece. Oliver and Roderick Montpelier, eccentric millionaire brothers, spot Henry Adams (Gregory Peck) who has suddenly fallen on penury because of an accident. Unknown to Henry, the brothers place an unusual bet on him. They obtain from the Bank of England a Million Pound note and place it in an envelope. This is handed to Henry. Oliver's wager is that Henry will be able to buy everything he needs, including luxurious accommodation, without the note ever being encashed. Mere existence of such wealth will obviate real expenditure. The magic of credit would suffice. Roderick's bet is exactly the opposite.

In the envelope, Henry also finds a letter from the brothers informing him that they will be out of the country for a month. There is an enigmatic instruction for Henry: during the period of their absence, he must live comfortably but try not to spend the money. Mark Twain wouldn't write a story without clever twists. For instance, the note is hidden by the hotel guest whose luxury suite has been taken by Henry on the strength of his newly found wealth. Confusion follows. But in the end, Henry returns the Million Pound note to the Brothers having made a fortune from a mining company. I realise that the mind does make cavernous connections. But even so, Bollywood scriptwriters have a great deal of work to do before they make Mark Twain's yarn applicable to the consequences of demonetisation. A comic twist being considered was: hundreds of thousands of swipe machines to be placed at every point of contact between man and money -- offices, courts, police stations. Bollywood needs to look beyond cinema: here is an idea for an endless TV serial.

By the time the film, or the serial, is mounted on the sets, the economic story will be stale. Who will be interested in the circumstances under which Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan was shown the door? Is it true that he was lunging at the fat cats responsible for non-performing assets which were causing banks to gasp for breath? That Urjit Patel was promoted as Reserve Bank Governor hurriedly to protect the fat cats and, at the same time, to remonetise banks by other means -- demonetisation, for instance -- must rank as an unverifiable fact. Yes, he is yet another Gujarati at India's very top. But it would still be bad form to join critics who have pulled out a comparison from China. The Gang of four dominated Mao's Cultural Revolution; a Gang of Five spurs India's galloping nationalism. Even the Supreme Court has chipped in. Doors of cinema halls must remain shut while the national anthem is being played, presumably even in the event of fire. Nobler to die standing than run like rats when the anthem is playing. The economic consequences

of demonetisation are obvious, but it is this nationalism business which has been accelerated. Never in history has a leader lined up a nation of a billion- plus population outside its banks, day after day for a month. Heaven knows how long these drills will continue. Surprising that choreographers of the national purpose have not suggested martial music or an occasional saffron flag at these venues. Such additions might be required to stiffen the people's sinews. Belief was widespread at the earlier stages of the currency queues that Narendra Modi had mobilised the poor against the rich, the hoarders of black money, who would soon be exposed, then dragged through streets, their faces blackened. This was the common refrain I heard from Mumbai taxi drivers. People are now beginning to see light. Not only are hoarders, black marketers not being caught, but folks of their ilk or even the untainted rich are not even there in queue. In fact the queue as an equaliser has failed. Unless some new diversionary tamasha is quickly mounted,

restiveness will grow. Social upheaval or no social upheaval, Modi has already pulled off an incomparable feat. In the full flare of empiricism, he has been able to gauge the Indian's abject willingness to be mobilised behind a national cause, timid and docile. Tied to this is another reality: he has beyond any shadow of a doubt exposed the complete impotence of the political opposition, barring Mamata in Bengal. Never will the opposition have a better opportunity for a countermobilisation than the one Modi offered them on the night of November 8. Here were readymade queues across the nation aching to find out whatever fate awaits them. There was not a single leader to stoke public anger; no one to harvest it. The weaklings, who pass for our opposition, preferred to deposit themselves in the well of the House. For a people sickened by politicians, Modi does look like the leader they would willy nilly look towards. But is he in control of the game he has started on November 8? Does he have a clue which way the ball is turning?

Malaysia PM opens thorny debate in accusing Myanmar of genocide KUALA LUMPUR, DeceMbeR 10 (ReUteRs): Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak’s stern rebuke to Myanmar for a military-led crackdown on Muslim Rohingyas was a rarity among Southeast Asian nations, who adhere to a policy of non-interference in each other’s domestic affairs. Critics saw the beleaguered Najib reaching for the moral high ground with his criticism over the weekend of Myanmar in order to pander to Malay Muslim voters after a series of protests calling for him to resign over a corruption scandal. Najib is eyeing elections in the second half of 2017, nearly a year ahead of the 2018 deadline, a government source told Reuters. At a rally on Sunday, Najib called for foreign intervention to stop the “genocide” of Rohingya Muslims and lashed out at Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi for her inaction. The persecution of the Rohingyas in Rakhine state, however, has been going on for years. It has forced hundreds of thousands to board flimsy boats and flee to neighbouring countries including Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia - which along with Myanmar are all members of the Associa-

to handle this issue diplomatically through the ambassadors,” Zaw Htay was quoted telling the local media in Myanmar. He accused Najib of looking to win popular support among his Muslim voters. Myanmar said this week it was halting workers going to Malaysia in response to the comments. But Najib in his rally speech suggested that ASEAN must set aside its principle of noninterference to tackle regional issues like the Rohingya repressions and migrations, especially when they pose questions about universal values. “We want to remind Myanmar’s government that the ASEAN charter also upholds basic human rights,” the premier said in his speech.

INVISIBLE MIGRANTS Rohingyas in Malaysia applauded Najib’s intervention. “Rohingya people are hoping something may change in Myanmar - and also in Malaysia where many of us live,” said Faisal Islam Muhammad Kassim of the Rohingya Society in Malaysia. Tens of thousands marched on the streets in capital Kuala Lumpur last month, demanding he step down and face corruption charges. Najib has denied wrongdoing and has used powerful security laws to block dissenters and his opponents. Najib needs the support of the powerful Islamist party PAS, to secure a convincing win in the next elections. The premier has put his weight behind an Islamic law, hudud, that sets out punishments such as amputation and stoning. The law may be tabled in parliament next year. “Quite clearly, there is a major domestic political dimension to this, as Najib positions himself as the champion of downtrodden Muslims in the region, which he and UMNO obviously believe will be popular in the Malay Muslim heartland,” said Phil Robertson, deputy director for the Asia Division of Human Rights Watch. “And of course, talking about the Rohingya is a good way to change the subject from the 1MDB scandal,” he added. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) representative in Malaysia, Richard Towle, said Rohingyas in Malaysia are in the “invisible bottom 30 percent of society, and very much at risk of exploitation and abuse”. “Although it’s proper to highlight the situation in Myanmar itself, it’s also very important to look at the situation of the Rohingya in Bangladesh and here in Malaysia, where there is a lot we can still do to make their lives more secure and safer,” Towle said.

Climate change likely triggered Air pollution impairs functioning Nobel Prize winner says a “ray of hope” for Syria, Sudan deadly 2016 avalanche in Tibet of blood vessels in lungs OsLO, DeceMbeR 10 (Re-

NeW YORK, DeceMbeR 10 (IANs): Climate change is to blame for a deadly glacier collapse this year in the once stable region of the Tibetan Plateau, says a study. On July 17, more than 70 million tonnes of ice broke off from the Aru glacier in the mountains of western Tibet and tumbled into a valley below, taking the lives of nine nomadic yak herders living there. Glacial collapse is unprecedented in western Tibet, which for decades has resisted the effects of climate change while glaciers in southern and eastern Tibet have melted at an accelerating rate. The most important fact about the avalanche is that it lasted only four or five minutes (according to witnesses), yet it managed to bury 3.7 square miles of the valley floor in that time, said Lonnie Thompson, Professor at The Ohio State University in the US. Meltwater at the base of the glacier must have lubricated the ice to speed its flow down the mountain, said the study published in the Journal of Glaciology. “Given the rate at which the event occurred and the area covered, I think it could only happen in the presence of meltwater,” Thompson noted. The researchers used satellite data and GPS to get precise measurements of how much ice fell in the first avalanche and the area it covered. “We still don’t know exactly where the meltwater came from, but given that the average temperature at the nearest weather station has risen by about 1.5 degrees Celsius over the last 50 years, it makes sense that snow and ice are melting and the resulting water is seeping down beneath the glacier,” Thompson said. Increased snowfall has even led to the expansion of some glaciers in western Tibet -- and the extra snowfall likely played some role in the avalanche by creating additional meltwater, said lead author of the paper Lide Tian from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Other nearby glaciers may be vulnerable, “but unfortunately as of today, we have no ability to predict such disasters”, Thompson added. Researchers could not have predicted, for example, that a neighbouring glacier in the same mountain range would give way just two months later, but it did in September 2016. That avalanche appears not to have resulted in any deaths, and the cause is still under investigation.

Russia declines Japanese dog diplomacy ahead of summit tOKYO, DeceMbeR 10 (ReUteRs): Russia appears to have snubbed a Japanese attempt at puppylove diplomacy by declining a gift of a dog for President Vladimir Putin at a summit next week with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The Japanese government had planned to present Putin, widely known to be a dog lover, with a male Akita as a companion to Yume, a female of the same breed that Japan gave him in 2012. But a Japanese legislator said Russia had turned down the offer. “Unfortunately, we heard from our counterparts, and our hope to present a bridegroom was dashed,” House of Representatives member Koichi Hagiuda said in a blog post on Friday, without giving a reason for the rejection. Abe and Putin will meet in Japan on Dec. 15-16. They are expected to work towards reviving security talks and joint naval rescue training halted after Russia annexed the Crimea region in 2014. The two sides are also set to sign some business deals. A territorial dispute over a group of islands has bedevilled relations between the two countries since the end of World War Two. Putin is known to be an animal lover who has been photographed riding horses, swimming with dolphins and cuddling a leopard. In addition to Yume, which means “dream” in Japanese, he is the owner of Buffy, a male Bulgarian Shepherd given by Bulgaria’s prime minister in 2010.

Air pollution is associated with increased pulmonary vascular tone which makes it more difficult for blood to flow to the lungs LONDON, DeceMbeR 10 (IANs): Increased exposure to gaseous air pollutants such as Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) and Ozone (O3) can impair the function of blood vessels in the lungs and raise the risk of cardiovascular disease, according to a study. The findings showed that air pollution is a major public health issue for people living in polluted urban areas where exercise could damage the lungs and potentially lead to decompensated heart failure. “Air pollution is associated with increased pulmonary vascular tone which makes it more difficult for blood to flow to the lungs. Longer exposure to air pollution exposure seems necessary to impair right ventricular systolic function,” said lead author Jean-Francois Argacha, cardiologist at the University Hospital (UZ) in Brussels. According to researchers, if air pollution causes narrowing of the blood vessels in the lungs -- vasoconstriction -- this com-

bined with the systemic effects of air pollution, which consists of particulate matter of different sizes and gases such as nitrogen dioxide and ozone, could cause decompensated heart failure. The study showed a negative effect of particulate matter -PM10, PM2.5 and ozone on pulmonary circulation. Increase in PM10 and PM2.5 over ten days were associated with worse right ventricle function. Specifically, increases in these pollutants were associated with reduced pulmonary acceleration time and increased pulmonary acceleration slope. The negative impact of PM10 on pulmonary circulation was more pronounced in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea. In addition, the study showed that exposure to diesel exhaust did not modify the pulmonary circulation compared to ambient air when the volunteers were resting but did when dobutamine was administered. “This suggests that pollution is more harmful to the lung circulation during exercise,” Argacha said. “Our main advice is to limit physical activities during heavy air pollution,” Argacha suggested in the study presented at annual meeting EuroEcho-Imaging 2016 in Leipzig, Germany.

UteRs): Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said an accord to end a 52-year civil war with Marxist rebels was a “ray of hope” for solving conflicts from Syria to South Sudan as he collected the Nobel Peace Prize on Saturday. In an acceptance speech that quoted an anti-war song by Bob Dylan, the 2016 Literature Laureate, Santos said Colombia itself had drawn inspiration from other peace processes such as those in South Africa and Northern Ireland. Santos collected the prize - a gold medal, diploma and a cheque for 8 million Swedish crowns ($870,000) at a ceremony in Oslo’s city hall for his efforts to end the conflict with Marxist FARC rebels in which 220,000 people died. “The Colombian peace agreement is a ray of hope in a world troubled by so many conflicts and so much intolerance,” he said, saying a U.S. academic study called it the most comprehensive of 34 peace accords signed in the past three decades. “It proves that what, at first, seems impossible, through perseverance may become possible even in Syria or Yemen or South Sudan,” he told an audience including victims of the war as well as Norway’s King Harald. The rebel Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, were not invited, except for a Spanish lawyer to represent them. FARC leader Rodrigo Londono had been tipped by some Nobel watchers to

share the prize with Santos. The audience applauded a group of about 10 victims attending the ceremony, after they stood after Santos introduced them. Among them was Leyner Palacios, a man who Santos said lost 32 relatives, including his parents and three brothers, in a 2002 FARC mortar attack on a church. Palacios nodded when Santos said he had forgiven the attackers. The peace deal almost collapsed in October after Colombian voters rejected it in a referendum, reckoning the first version was too lenient on the rebels. A revised deal was approved by Congress last month, but controversially without a referendum demanded by a big opposition party. Berit Reiss-Andersen, a mem-

ber of the five-member award committee, said in a presentation speech that Santos had been “a driving force” and that the peace process needed “all the international support it could get” after the referendum. In his speech, received with a standing ovation, Santos quoted what he called a “haunting question” from one of Dylan’s most famous songs: “How many deaths will it take ‘till he knows that too many people have died? The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind.” The other 2016 prizes - for Literature, Medicine, Physics, Chemistry and Economics - will be presented later in Stockholm. Dylan has said he won’t attend, citing “pre-existing commitments.”

CIA says Russia intervened to help Trump win White House WAsHINGtON, DeceMbeR 10 (Re UteRs): The CIA has concluded that Russia intervened in the 2016 election to help Presidentelect Donald Trump win the White House, and not just to undermine confidence in the U.S. electoral system, a senior U.S. official said on Friday. U.S. intelligence agencies have assessed that as the 2016 presidential campaign drew on, Russian government officials devoted increasing attention to assisting Donald Trump’s effort to win the election, the U.S. official familiar with the finding told Reuters on Friday night on condition of anonymity. Citing U.S. officials briefed on the matter, the Washington Post reported on Friday that intelligence agencies had identified individuals with connections to the Russian government who provided thousands of hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee and others, including the chairman of Hillary

Clinton’s presidential campaign, to WikiLeaks. U.S. President Barack Obama ordered intelligence agencies to review cyber attacks and foreign intervention into the 2016 election and deliver a report before he leaves office on Jan. 20, the White House said on Friday. As summer turned to fall, Russian hackers turned almost all their attention to the Democrats. Virtually all the emails they released publicly were potentially damaging to Clinton and the Democrats, the official told Reuters. “That was a major clue to their intent,” the official said. “If all they wanted to do was discredit our political system, why publicize the failings of just one party, especially when you have a target like Trump?” A second official familiar with the report said the intelligence analysts’ conclusion about Russia’s motives does not mean the intelligence community believes that Moscow’s efforts altered or significantly

affected the outcome of the election. Russian officials have denied all accusations of interference in the U.S. election. A CIA spokeswoman said the agency had no comment on the matter. The hacked emails passed to WikiLeaks were a regular source of embarrassment to the Clinton

campaign during the race for the presidency. U.S. intelligence analysts have assessed “with high confidence” that at some point in the extended presidential campaign Russian President Vladimir Putin’s government had decided to try to bolster Trump’s chances of winning.

The Russians appear to have concluded that Trump had a shot at winning and that he would be much friendlier to Russia than Clinton would be, especially on issues such as maintaining economic sanctions and imposing additional ones, the official said. Moscow is launching a similar effort to influence

the next German election, following an escalating campaign to promote far-right and nationalist political parties and individuals in Europe that began more than a decade ago, the official said. In both cases, said the official, Putin’s campaigns in both Europe and the United States are intended to disrupt and discredit the Western concept of democracy by promoting extremist candidates, parties, and political figures. In October, the U.S. government formally accused Russia of a campaign of cyber attacks against Democratic Party organizations ahead of the Nov. 8 presidential election. President Barack Obama has said he warned Putin about consequences for the attacks. Trump has said he is not convinced Russia was behind the cyber attacks. His transition team issued a statement on “claims of foreign interference in U.S. elections” on Friday but did not directly address the issue.

china’s chen banned for two years for doping at rio

beIJING, DecembeR 10 (ReuTeRs): Chinese swimmer Chen Xinyi has been banned for two years after failing a drug test at the Rio Olympics, the sport’s governing body (FINA) said. Chen finished fourth in the women’s 100 metres butterfly at Rio but did not start in the 50m freestyle heats after Chinese state media reported she had tested positive for the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide. Hydrochlorothiazide, known as a masking agent, is a banned substance because it can be used to spur weight loss and cover up

the presence of other illegal drugs by diluting urine collected in doping tests. “The FINA Doping Panel decided … to impose on the ath-

lete a period of two years’ ineligibility, starting on 11 August 2016 and ending on 10 August 2018 for her first anti-doping rule violation,”

FINA said in a statement. “Furthermore, the FINA Doping Panel acknowledged the Court of Arbitration for Sport Panel decision regarding the disqualification of the athlete’s results at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.” Chen’s suspension followed Friday’s release of the second part of the World Anti-Doping Agency report into state-sponsored doping in Russia. The report found more than 1,000 Russian competitors across dozens of sports were involved in an institutional conspiracy to conceal positive drug tests dating back to at least 2011.

Beckham faces deadline on Miami MLS franchise

TORONTO, DecembeR 10 (ReuTeRs): Major League Soccer fired a warning shot across the bow of David Beckham’s plans for a franchise in Miami on Friday, with the MLS chief saying the clock was ticking down on time to get a deal done. “There is a deadline on the Miami deal,” MLS commissioner Don Garber said in his annual state of league address ahead of Saturday’s MLS Cup final between Toronto FC and Seattle Sounders. Garber, abiding by a confidentiality agreement between the league and Beckham’s group, declined to say what exactly that deadline is but confirmed Miami will be on the agenda when the MLS board meets next week to discuss expansion plans. Beckham’s Miami team is slotted in to become the league’s 24th franchise following Atlanta and Minnesota United, who are set to start playing next season followed by a second team in Los Angeles scheduled to begin op-

erations in 2018. “I have said before we need to resolve the Miami situation so we can go forward with our expansion plans from 25 to 28 because they are team 24,” said Garber. “If they are not going to be team 24 there are going to be a lot of things that need to move around. “We all know how teams evolve in certain markets and the challenges of getting stadiums built, we try to do everything we can to ensure we have the right recipe for success.” Beckham, who obtained the rights to buy into an MLS franchise at a discount as part of the deal he signed to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy, has been frustrated in attempts to secure a home for his team. The former England captain and his partners in Miami Beckham United (MBU), agent Simon Fuller, Bolivian billionaire Marcelo Claure and Tim Leiweke, who masterminded the midfielder’s move to the Galaxy

in 2007, recently purchased a parcel of land in the Overton area of Miami. MBU, however, is facing further delays, according to a report in the Miami Herald, as the group searches for new investors to help fund the building of a stadium and the purchase of additional land. The MLS board is due to meet on Thursday in New York to discuss the process, timetable and fees for bringing on board four new franchises to take the total number of teams to 28. At least 10 markets are looking into joining the MLS, including Austin, Cincinnati, Detroit, Nashville, Raleigh, Sacramento, St. Louis, San Antonio, San Diego and Tampa. Interest in the league has skyrocketed, Garber said. For the sixth time in seven seasons the league smashed total and average attendance records with almost 21,700 fans per game, which Garber said put the MLS sixth among global football leagues.

Mountain cultures: celebrating diversity & strengthening identity

D

ecember 11, which has been designated as “International Mountain Day” by the United Nations General Assembly has been observed every year to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development and to build alliances that will bring positive change to mountain peoples and environments around the world. There is so much to be said about the world’s undeniably incredible mountains. These giants encompass some of the most spectacular landscapes, a wide variety of ecosystems, a great diversity of species, and distinctive human communities. • Mountains cover 22 percent of the earth’s land surface • Mountain tourism attracts 15-20% of global tourism • Indigenous and local populations in mountains have unique local knowledge, traditions and cultural practices • Mountains are home to 13 per cent of the world population • Mountains have 56 per cent of all Biosphere Reserves The Sustainable Development Forum Nagaland (SDFN) together with the Integrated Mountain Initiative (IMI), other mountain networks and communities across the world is observing the International Mountain Day by way of sharing information about mountains and their importance in not just in our lives but in shaping and influencing global development. Nagaland, like most of the northeast, is in the Eastern Himalayan region which is amongst one of the most significant global biodiversity hotspots.

Last year's theme raised awareness of how mountain agriculture, which is predominantly family farming, has been a model for sustainable development for centuries. It highlighted how family farming in many mountain regions is undergoing rapid transformation due to population growth, economic globalisation and urbanisation. This was an issue so relevant to Nagaland and its farmers where a majority of our farmers are small land holders practising family based farming. The theme for this year’s International Mountain Day is ‘Mountain Cultures: Celebrating Diversity and Strengthening Identity'. If one were to look within, we will notice that this concept of traditional heritage, culture and spirituality is intrinsically linked with our livelihoods, where it is often our traditional lifestyles that determine the way our people make a living and subsist. Nagaland like many mountain areas is home to indigenous communities that possess and maintain precious knowledge, traditions and languages. How these are valued, conserved and used is a different issue. In terms of spirituality, mountains have a spiritual meaning for most religions: Mount Olympus, Mount Sinai, Machu Picchu, Mount Athos, just to name a few. Mountain peoples across the world have developed remarkable land use systems that are rich in globally significant biodiversity thanks to the harmonious co-existence of communities with the environment. More than a quarter of the world’s surface is covered by mountains and over 12 per cent of the human population (approximately 720 million people) call mountains their home. Mountains not only provide sustenance for mountain people around the world, but also indirectly

benefit billions more living downstream. They are the water towers of the world, providing freshwater to at least half of the world’s people. Most of the world’s rivers are fed from mountain sources, with snow acting as a storage mechanism for downstream users. They also play an important role in influencing regional and global climates and weather conditions. All this essentially means that the well-being of people around the world depends largely on the health of our mountains. To us mountain people, land, water and forests are not just natural resources. Our well-being, sense of identity and our children’s future depend on the careful stewardship of this environment. While we may aspire for new types of crops, institutions or forms of development, one cannot ignore the fact that ultimately, our traditional knowledge and techniques will be critical to managing and enhancing the resilience of our fragile mountain ecosystems. Even as the world celebrates, let us give a thought to the vast knowledge system of our ancestors and our people and ensure that we do not lose it as rapidly as we are losing it now. Can the theme for next year’s Hornbill be based on our diverse natural biodiversity? Mountains across the world are also places of tourism and cultural trails. From skiing to climbing to visiting the rock churches in Ethiopia, mountains offer all types of possibilities to all kinds of tourists. Probably, one reason why people flock to our Hornbill Festival is because Nagaland is a mountain state and yes, mountains and hills do attracted people. If sustainably managed, Nagaland Tourism can have a role in promoting and protecting traditional cultures as well as creating incentives for the protection

of our ecosystems, their goods and services too. Can the theme for next year’s Hornbill be based on our diverse natural biodiversity? After all, our very own cultures do emanate from these resources and the agricultural calendars. Vulnerability of mountain ecosystems As gigantic and enormous as they may seem, mountains are vulnerable to a host of threats including landslides, fire, climate change, land cover change and agricultural intensification, deforestation, infrastructure development, and armed conflicts. These pressures degrade mountain environments and affect the fragile ecosystem and the livelihoods of people dependent upon them. The impacts of unsuitable development are particularly intense and more rapid in mountains, and more difficult to correct than in other ecosystems. At the same time, mountain people are amongst the poorest and most disadvantaged in the world, with about 80 per cent living in poverty. They often face marginalisation and lack access to basic services such as health and education. Like most in Nagaland, traditional mountain societies rely on agriculture, with a higher risk of crop failure than at lower elevations because of harsh weather and less level ground suitable for agriculture. Moreover, since mountains are constantly under threat from disasters, the hardships we face are exacerbated. There is growing evidence that many mountain regions have become increasingly disaster-prone over the past few decades, due to unchecked mining and unbridled development. A recent workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction organized by SDFN and the Nagaland State Disaster Management Agency has brought out ample cases and examples of how

most disasters are brought about by unsustainable development activities. Sustainable approaches to development in mountain regions are therefore particularly important today and we must ensure that all activities are planned and executed in manners that will reduce disaster risks. On this International Mountain Day, let us raise awareness about the conservation of mountains, and the sustainable use of scarce resources from mountain areas. Let us protect our cultures, traditions and knowledge by using local products ourselves. Finally, let’s resolve to conserve our biological diversity, for the wellbeing of mountain dwellers everywhere and our own well-being. Let this International Mountain Day 2016 help us reflect on the variety and richness of mountain cultures, and the need to promote the vast array of mountain identities, as well as, ensure that indigenous rights are recognized and traditional ways endure. The Sustainable Development Forum Nagaland calls upon all communities, organizations and even religious institutions to dedicate some time to reflect on the crucial role of mountains in our lives and to consider ways for us to collectively work and network towards a common pathway to sustainable development. John Muir, naturalist and conservationist said, “Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, overcivilised people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity.”... and incidentally, for us lucky people, this is home, we just need to tidy it a bit more. Issued by Sustainable Development Forum Nagaland (SDFN)

christians: saving or stumbling people Book review on ‘Socio-Cultural Vebu Khamo | Seoul Christian University

J

esus Christ saves yet many stumbles at His exclusive nature of salvation. In this article, the writer looks this words ‘saves’ and ‘stumble’ in a way that relates specifically to the moral and ethical lifestyle of Christian that can lead or repel people away from Christ. Having a conversation over a cup of coffee with a wife of a distinguished theological professor in Korea, she, pointing from the book of Acts said that theearly Christian Church were revered and feared even though they were socially ostracised and persecuted. The outside community had a deep respect for the Christian faith and principles though they did not join them. And it was the same case even of the early Korean Christian Church as the unbelieverstoo had a huge respect for the Church even though they were not Christians. But now, the scenario has changed where the Church has failed to maintain that

standard of reverence and holiness. The whole scene has pretty changed ever since Churches have been caught with financial rackets and scandals. The very word ‘Church’ has become a mockery to God and Christian faith and principles. She sustained that the Churches has lost God’s glory and reverence. It was with regret and pain as she expressed this to me. I felt that there was a genuine concern that she observed about many Korean Churches. Although the perspective is purely subjective, it seems that this is a major scenario which we can observe in almost every part of the globe. In the ancient history of Israel, there came a point in the life of the Jews that God’s glory abandoned Jerusalem Temple and subsequently the Holy City was besieged. The exile to Babylon was their story. Yet a faithful young man by the name of Daniel was found to be praying facing Jerusalem three times a day. You see, the glory is gone yet Daniel had hoped to see a destructed, doomed temple to resurrect

Christmas Day to be a Working Day

A

Rev. L. Suohie Mhasi

Korean friend shared his traumatic experience of escaping from North to South Korea when Communism took over North Korea. When Communistic rule started in North Korea, Christians had to go to offices and children had to go to schools on Sunday. He was hiding somewhere and could escape from being killed as he was a wanted man and fled to South Korea by taking various green leaves on his way. When Christmas day is to be a working day. If it is to be a restricted holiday, it is a different matter, but if it is to be declared a working day, Christians who are Govt. servants have to comply with the orders of the Government and instead of having the festival, they have to attend offices and Christian students have to go to schools and colleges. So it is to be a cruel governing day instead of a good governing day. We have past experiences that when the country was in surge of extremism, it was always the cause of the downfall of the Government. Scholarship for Theological students was abolished and now Christmas day is going to be a working day. Such practices of suppression of the minority group by the majority group is not a healthy move for stability and peace.

from its stalemate condition. It was with this faith and hope that he prayed now and again. After decades, Daniel’s prayer came to fruition. Daniel never went home again yet his prayer began the engine of restoration and revival. Now, with this in view, many faithful Korean believers are praying for the ship of the Church to take another direction in the path of restoring God’s glory in the Church. Late Senate Chaplain Richard Halverson once commented this famous statement, “Historians of religion like to say that Christianity was born in the middle east as a religion, moved to Greece and became a philosophy, journeyed to Rome and became a legal system, spread through Europe as a culture-and when it migrated to America, Christianity became big business.” And I would add, “America sold this Christianity to Asia and most of the third world countries.”Thanks to many of the past American missionaries but today the proclamation of the gospel by scores of contemporary

evangelists has changed immensely. The focus on building earthly kingdom, possession, wealth and materialism is a very cheap gospel. It sounds very appealing but it’s not the true gospel. Christianity should retrieve from this menace of selling this cheap gospeland proclaimto people the truth of Christianity that it involves complete surrender and commitment. There can be no enculturation or syncretism with the worldly affairs or pagan practices. Ifyou want to buy into real Christianity, it will cost you everything and if it does not cost you everything then it’s a façade of everything that’s proclaimed to be true. Therefore, the need of the Church today is to review, examine and explore the true essence of what a Christian Church should correspond to and return to the true Biblical Church. Prayer: God, open our eyes to see things the way you see. Help us discern the false prophets in sheep’s clothing and may you reveal your glory in your people and the Church, Amen.

Has the church failed us?

B

Kevitho Kera

efore I go ahead let me make it clear that am not talking about the body of Christ which is the real Church but am talking about the organisations , the set ups or the institutions called Naga Church. Has the Church failed us? Sundays after Sundays Jesus is taught on the pulpit but corruption in Nagaland is at its peak. If Jesus is really taught on the pulpits, why are the roads in Nagaland so bad, why are elections being conducted unfairly, why are citizens stealing electricity, why are teachers' salaries not paid and we can go on and on. Pastors, preachers, deacons and church apex leaders not preaching about True Jesus on the pulpits? Have they compromised their messages? Are their sermons only feels good sermons, pleasant to the ears sermons? Why if Jesus is preached on the pulpits Sundays after Sundays, Nagaland is stink hell? Will the Church be bold enough to accept its failures? Wait! Politics has crept into the Church. Apex church bodies have become mere political bodies. Pastors and preachers preach sermons which are carefully prepared not to offend the corrupt politicians or bureaucrats sitting on the pew. Preach Jesus on the pulpit and that means saying siphoning off public money is wrong, backdoor appointments are wrong, stealing electricity is wrong. The glaring truth is instead we see church leaders who are okay with

their children getting jobs through backdoor! We see a lot of Church programs inside the Church buildings and outside, crusades, seminars and revivals but why is Naga society still in moral tatters? Are those programs just flash in the pan which is not really healing the society? Are the intentions of those programs only emotionally driven without pragmatic insights? Come on with so many Christian programs we expect atleast a change in the Naga mindset but status quo is maintained. The programs yeah are aimed at bringing the people to Christ but where are the results? Bad roads, corruption, nepotism, etc are the results? Pardon me for questioning the Naga Church. Am not solely putting all the responsibilities on the Church but somewhere the Church have failed. The Catholic Church of the yore could not be questioned and it decayed until Martin Luther came up on the scene and changed the Church history. A halo should not be hung around the Naga Church making it unquestionable otherwise it will become redundant or decay. Our Naga society revolves around the Church and the Church is expected to be proactive. Church needs to be radical when needed and that includes boldly saying on the pulpits that corruption is wrong and tenth tithes given out of corrupt money is wrong in the sight of God. Sorry for my harsh words but the Church needs to wake up. Nagas need you to be radical at this juncture. Don't keep silent.

ocio-Cultural and Political History of the Nagas, is a collection of research papers presented in Seminars and various Journals by Dr.L. Atola Changkiri, former Additional Director of Higher Education, Govt of Nagaland, and a historian in her own right. The book is on the Naga history ranging from origin of the Nagas to traditional life to modernity to the establishment of the British power in Naga Hills to social, political and economic life of the Nagas. These are presented in a lucid and concise manner that makes interesting reading. The author sheds light on the introduction of formal education in Naga Hills, and the establishment of the Technical School for blacksmithy and carpentry at Kohima in 1908. It is worthwhile to learn that the product of the Technical School like iron work and its exhibits was sent to Allahabad and England for imperial exhibitions. It mirrored the success of the only Technical School in Naga Hills, and speaks volume of the dexterousness of the Nagas at the beginning of the 20th century. The book also tells us that Rev Miles Brownson did try at Namsang in 1838 to establish a centre, even before the annexation of Naga Hills by the British, which could have been the first ever attempt to educate the naked Nagas by the foreign missionaries. The significance of Aoleang festival and Moatsu festival of the Konyaks and Aos; and the status and position of the past and the present Naga women in Naga society is highlighted in the Book. The Book would have enriched further had the author included the festivals of the major tribes of Nagaland and the latest status of Naga women demand for 33% reservations for women in the

urban bodies in Nagaland. The chapter on Dobashi system and their role in the Naga Hills caught my attention as the author traces the etymologically meaning of ‘Dobashi’, which means ‘man of two languages’. I had been trying to explore this for many years. The author also delved into the genesis of the Dobashi institution, and their role and responsibility during the British period to the present day. Traditional Naga practice of settling land dispute by way of oath-taking will attract the attention of the modern readers of the 21st century, which is replete with land dispute. The introduction of Innerline Regulation Act of 1873 in North East India with special reference to Naga Hills is also included. The Book concludes with the general topic of the origin of Naga politics and the Sixteen Point Agreement, which gave birth to the State of Nagaland. The Book is not a voluminous one, nonetheless provides vital information that will come in handy for the research scholars, administrators, teachers and the students alike to get a better insight into social, economic, cultural and political life of the Nagas.

usting stereotypes and the love for Bollywood songs and movies as their inspiration, three Nagas have taken the road less travelled by releasing a music video in Hindi. The Finalist, a Hindi band from Nagaland, which released the song ‘Yeh Safar’ (This journey) on YouTube channel on December 8, has been creating waves in social media since then. The band consists of three members - Kenneth Mozhui, Mendan Konyak, and Baham C Noklang. Talking to The Morung Express about their unique project, one of the band members Mendan Konyak said that the three met in a reality show, Naga Hindi Voice (Season 2), in 2015. “We reached final and taking advantage of our common interest in Hindi songs and inspired by one another we decided to come together as band,” he said. They decided on the name, “The Finalist”, because they were the finalists of the said show, Naga Hindi Voice 2. “From that stage we have learned a lot and also discovered the ability for singing and talent in us, so we felt ‘The Finalist’ is perfect because it defines us too,” Mendan added. A Bachelor of Arts student at Sakus Mission College, Dimapur, Mendan loved singing Hindi songs since childhood. His friends played an important role by always encouraging him. “During my high school days I once took part in a variety show in my village where I was placed second and I gained more confidence,” he recounted.

“Though I could not be the winner in the Naga Hindi Voice 2, I remembered that my dad once told me that his aim in life was to be a singer composing songs but could not do, so I thought of completing his aim.” For Mendan, his dad is still an inspiration. “He still plays guitar and my younger brother is also very much in love with music,” Mendan added. Baham C Noklang, a Hindi student from Ram Janaki Higher Secondary Dimapur, said that being born and brought up in a musical environment he started singing from a very tender age and counts his father as his inspiration. His elder brother Akup Noklang, who composed the song and also featured in the video, is also a solo artist in English and has a bestselling local album under his belt. While he assisted his brother both on stage as

well as some songs in his album, Banham said that the Naga Hindi Voice 2 was a big privilege for him in which he gained lots of experiences and also met his band mates. Kenneth Mozhui, a talented artist from Dimapur who completed his studies from Bissau College, Shillong, also comes from a musical background like his band mates. He was the main vocalist of the band called "Rezque" and has taken part in various beat contests in and around Nagaland and has also won a free recording contract in SumerJam. While his previous band disbanded due to other commitments, the love for music propelled him to take part in the Naga Hindi Voice 2. The band said that they decided to release the songs after seeing there are less Hindi artists in Nagaland and will soon be work-

ing for an album release. “We hope to inspire more people, reach them and show them the peace we find in music, the unstoppable link that connects people,” said Mendan. “As a non-Hindi speaking state, we know singing Hindi song is very difficult for us,” he admitted, but said that the band will try different genres – pop, rock and even Indian classical music. “It’s very much difficult but we are trying our best, learning from the videos by ourselves.” Directed by Charles Crezen, the song ‘Yeh Safar’ is composed by Akup Noklang and the music was arranged by Alem Alia Jamir. It was recorded at Tribes Music and Media Lab. Watch the video here: https ://www.youtube. com/watch?v=wbtjDKIp5 WI&feature=youtu.be.

Messi, Suarez finish off Osasuna to get Barca back on track

C M Y K

barceLONa, DeceMber 10 (reuterS): Barcelona put pressure on La Liga leaders Real Madrid by picking up their first win in four games as two secondhalf strikes from Lionel Messi and one from Luis Suarez secured a 3-0 win at struggling Osasuna on Saturday. The Spanish champions missed a slew of chances in a dominant first-half display but their class eventually shone through when Suarez tapped Jordi Alba's cutback into an empty net in the 52nd minute to break the deadlock. Messi sealed the points in the 72nd by finishing off another pass from Alba and in stoppage time the Argentine wizard toyed with the Osasuna defence to grab the third and move ahead of Suarez and Cristiano Ronaldo as the league's top scorer with 11 goals. Barca are second in the standings and provisionally moved three points behind Real, who host Deportivo La

Coruna later on Saturday hoping to set a club record of 35 games unbeaten in all competitions. "We had a lot of chances and we knew that as soon as we got ahead it would open up. Fortunately, we were able to see out the game," Suarez told reporters. "We can't give up the fight, we're Barca and we're title candidates, we won't give up whether we're five, six or seven points behind." Osasuna went into the game bottom of the table and with the worst home record in the league and Barca were all over the home side in the opening half an hour. Suarez arrowed a shot just wide of the far post after mesmeric play by Messi in the opening stages and struck the post moments later. Suarez played in his strike partner but Messi's shot was blocked by Osasuna goalkeeper Nauzet Perez, who later tipped Messi's

attempted lob over the bar. Barca were almost caught out from Osasuna's only chance of the half when Miguel De Las Cuevas burst down the right and rolled the ball across the box towards striker Oriol Riera, who narrowly failed to make the contact for an equaliser. The champions were given another fright early in

the second half when Sergio Leon skipped towards the area and attempted an audacious chip which clipped the crossbar. The Catalans eventually made the most of their momentum when Messi created a gap around the area with a jinking run and slid the ball into the path of Alba who rolled it across for Suarez to tap into the net

from close range. Hungry for more, Messi gave the ball to Denis Suarez who again found Alba and Messi nipped ahead of his marker to turn the cross into the far corner. The Argentine was far from done, however, and skipped past five Osasuna players before blasting beyond Perez.

MuMbai, DeceMber 10 (iaNS): Skipper Virat Kohli and opener Murali Vijay hit superb centuries to power India to 451/7 at stumps on the third day for a crucial 51-run first innings lead against England in the fourth Test here on Saturday. Kohli's (147 not out) reassuring presence helped them immensely after India were reduced to 348/6 at tea from 247/2 at lunch, in response to England's first innings score of 400. Jayant Yadav (30 not out) was at the crease at stumps. Vijay scored 136, his eighth ton and second of the series, to put India in a strong position from where they slipped before Kohli took control. Jo e R o o t ( 2 - 1 8 ) , Moeen Ali (2-139) and Adil Rashid (2-152) were the most successful bowlers for England. Kohli struck his 15th hundred, in his 89th innings and 52nd Test, also completing 4000 runs, 1000 in 2016, in the process. He also became the highest run getter of the year across all formats with 2492 runs and the sixth fastest Indian to achieve the 4000 mark. Virender Sehwag is the fastest Indian to cross the milestone at 79 innings. Kohli reached the mark when he got to 41 runs during his knock. The 28-year-old also registered 1,000 Test runs in the year in just 11 matches, becoming the third Test skipper after Sachin Tendulkar (1997) and Rahul Dravid (2006) to do so. India were 247/2 at lunch and coasting along with opener Murali Vijay (136) striking his eighth century in the morning session. Resuming at their overnight score of 146/1, India were jolted as ear-

ly as the second ball of the day when No.3 batsman Cheteshwar Pujara (47) was dismissed off the bowling of Jake Ball (1-29). Pujara shouldered arms to a length ball that nipped back and knocked out his off stump. But it was the only joy England could get in the next two hours of the morning session as VijayKohli consolidated India's position with a 116-run partnership. India were comfortably placed at 247/2 at lunch, Vijay completing his century before lunch, hitting 10 fours and three sixes. India accumulated 101 runs in 31 overs in the morning phase of play. But it all went south in the second session after Vijay was dismissed. His fall after a 282-ball knock triggered a middle order batting wobble. Karun Nair (13), Parthiv Patel (15) and Ravichandran Ashwin (0) all depart-

ed in quick succession to raise fears of India conceding a vital first innings lead. Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja then arrested the slide, stitching a 57-run seventh-wicket stand to guide India towards safety after being reduced to 307/6. India went into tea at 348/6 with the Kohli-Jadeja partnership unbroken. Jadeja departed with India still needing 36 runs to level England's score. But Kohli then encouraged Jadhav to play positively. Jadhav repaid the faith shown on him by the skipper, staying unbeaten till the end, forging an unbroken 97 run partnership for the eighth wicket. The partnership ensured India took a potentially decisive first innings lead. Kohli, who struck 17 fours in a superb knock, would be keen to extend it beyond 100 runs when the fourth day's play resumes on Sunday.
