gives full credence to the Gujarat High Court’s view that blocking of Internet mobile facility is an “appropriate action” in situations “prone to aggression.” The High Court had opined that the State should be left to figure out an “effective approach” like blocking Internet on mobiles in order to maintain law and order. The Division Bench had reasoned that rioting had taken place in several parts of the State and it was only natural that the government would be “zealous” to control a violent situation. Further, the High Court had reasoned that only mobile Internet service was blocked and not Wi-Fi and broadband facilities. “Had there been a complete ban on Internet access, may be through mobiles or may be through Wi-Fi, the matter might stand on a different footing and different considerations,” the High Court order said.

Make well-planned villages with future progress in mind: tr Zeliang suggests PEREN, FEBRUARY 13 (MExN): Stating that the rural population was burgeoning across the hamlets in Nagaland State, Chief Minister TR Zeliang on Saturday called for establishment of wellplanned villages with future progress in mind. By doing so, the issue of human congestion, as is witnessed in the towns and cities, will not be an issue in the future, the chief minister said while inaugurating Gailinamdi village under Peren District. This village has been recognized as a ‘model village.’ In a DIPR report, Zeliang said every good work is the result of a well-planned programme and this code also applies in the building of wellplanned villages. Encouraging villagers to envisage wellplanned villages and then maneuver it into a model village, Zeliang said this require the co-operation and hard work of the villagers. The government alone cannot make a village into a model-both the stakeholders, which are the villagers, and the State government has to work side by side, he added. The chief minister also apprised the villagers to evolve a system to govern the village in order to sustain onslaught against the ethos and cultures of the village life. Also maintaining that since humans have no power over the topographies of the land, Zeliang said one has to plan it to suit one’s needs. Zeliang also stressed on the need for villagers to posses the quality of good citizen and hospitality, which he pointed out, is vital while planning a model village. Home Minister Y Patton, Minister for Rural Development, CL John, Peren Deputy Commissioner Peter Lichamo and former Minister Neiba Ndang also addressed the gathering. Earlier, the chief minister inaugurated the village gate and released the Zeme Literature Handbook. The programme also witnessed cultural items by the villagers. Gailinamdi village has a household of 60, with a population of 271 members.

JnU protest against attack on the ‘democratic ethos’ There is an attempt to silence voice of students: Naga students at JNU Morung Express News Dimapur | February 13

A Solidarity Public Meeting was held at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus today demanding the immediate and unconditional release of the JNUSU President and the end of police raj on campus. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury and CPI Secretary D. Raja also joined the Meeting on Saturday. According to the sources at JNU, today’s was one of the biggest public meetings in JNU’s history. On February 9, a group of individuals from JNU a cultural evening on February 9, entitled ‘A Country without a Post Office’ the protesting the “judicial killing of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat.” During the event, it was alleged that “anti-national” and “divisive” slogans were raised. Since then the controversy has erupted into a full-fledged attack on JNU. The police on February 12 arrested the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) President Kanhaiya Kumar on charges of sedition and started, what many are calling, a “witch-hunt” to curtail freedom of speech at campuses as well as growing intolerance for dissent in the country. Eight other students were debarred from academic activities by JNU pending a disciplinary enquiry into the event. Home Minister Rajnath Singh and HRD Minister Smriti Irani have both asserted that strict action will be taken against the demonstrators and said that ‘anti-national’ elements will not be tolerated.

‘Attack on democratic ethos’

Attending today’s Solidarity Public Meeting were also students from Nagaland who voiced concerns. Tiamongla Imchen, an MPhil student at the Centre for South Asian Studies and a student activist said the police crackdown was an “attack on the democratic ethos and space of the university.” And the safe space created by the University has also helped Northeast students feel at home in an otherwise hostile city, pointed out former student and presently a faculty in Delhi University, Kaustabh Deka. “It is a politically strategic tactical attack on the freedom of speech and expression and a means to affirm the idea of nationalism of a few with misappropriate attention

by media,” Imchen said. For Thepfulhoukho Kuotsu, a PhD Scholar at the Centre for Philosophy, the incident is pre-meditated. “It is an attack on the University by the BJP-led Government in order to silence the voice of the students so that they can carry their national project which is a real threat to democracy,” he opined. There are around 60-70 students from Nagaland in JNU. “The whole situation has been engineered by some groups to flare up tension and assault the freedom of expression, which is otherwise the right of not just students of JNU (in this case) but every citizen of the country. The media too, which is supposed to be neutral and not take any position has fallen into cheap jingoism. Pune, Hyderabad and JNU, all of them have been attacked by the same forces,” said Honjem Konyak, an MPhil student at the Centre for Historical Studies, JNU.

Steps ahead

Earlier, the JNU Teacher’s Association (JNUTA) following its Emergency Meeting, expressing deep concern on the recent developments, asserted that “JNU has always been a University where there has been a vibrant democratic culture, where diverse political ideological and academic views have engaged with each other in a spirit of peaceful dialogue and debate.” During the solidarity meeting, the JNU community comprising of Faculties, students and karamcharis joined hand to draft three demands: • To release the JNUSU president immediately and unconditionally • To stop witch-hunting of students inside the autonomous campus • Removal of police forces from the University premises. It also strongly condemned the biased national media reporting on the issue. Meanwhile the right wing student body ABVP attempted to disturb the peace meeting by shouting slogans throughout the three hours long meeting. Following the meeting, the joint students-teachers forum decided to conduct indefinite university strike until the release of the President and also called for formation of human chain in solidarity with student movements to bring normalcy back to the University. Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday ordered a magisterial inquiry into the JNU incident where anti-India slogans are said to have been raised, IANS reported.

Arunachal governor creating political turmoil: NCP Itanagar, February 13 (PtI): The NCP has alleged Arunachal Pradesh Governor J P Rajkhowa of creating political turmoil in the state. Party’s state unit president Gicho Kabak in a statement today alleged that the current situation in the state is an "onslaught of the BJP to topple the democratically elected government". The BJP through the governor is crushing the constitutional values to get power through back door. Now the governor should be more careful that such situation does not occur again. The governor wants power to rule the state and the Centre has provided him with it by imposing President's Rule in Arunachal Pradesh. He should now rule the state smoothly without affecting the developmental process, a statement from Kabak said. Public peace and security should be niqu said. An official at the state finance department informed that based on the budget estimate and re-

The NCP further cautioned that if any development works are stopped, people would revolt, so the governor should work for the overall interest of the people without any discrimination and ensure that lives and properties of people are protected. The party also stated that after imposition of President’s Rule in Arunachal, the tourist inflow in the state and business of twin capital cities had declined due to a fear psychosis in the minds of the people. guwahatI, February 13 (IanS): Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday released a white paper on the state's finances, and said the erstwhile Congress-led government at the Centre gave more funds to the state then the incumbent BJP-led regime. Giving statistics on the average fund transfer from the Centre during the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) tenure, Gogoi dared the BJP-led government to prove him wrong by publishing a similar white paper. "The average fund transfer rose from Rs.3,798 crore during the NDA tenure -- 1998-99 to 2003-04 -- to Rs.12,760 crore during the UPA tenure -- 2004-05 to 2013-14, which was al-

most four times more than what the state government received during the previous regime. "As a whole, while only Rs.22,734 crore was received by the state between 1998-99 to 200304, Rs.1,27,595 crore was received between 2004-05 to 2013-14 as transfer of funds from the central government," Gogoi said. He said Assam has been able to achieve a remarkable turnaround in the last 10 years due to a number of reforms undertaken by the Congress government. "The fiscal reform measures adopted by the state have started yielding favourable results from 200506 onwards. In 2005-06, revenue and fiscal deficits were not only wiped out but became comfortably favourable," he said. "Till 2008-09,

But a number of Kuki civil societies opposed the plan to perform the funeral service of the nine people who were killed during protests in Churachandpur district against three ILP Bills passed by the Manipur Assembly on August 31. The tribal communities in Manipur have said the Bills impinge upon their rights and hence they should be withdrawn. The bodies are now ly-

ing unclaimed in the mortuary of the district government hospital since they were killed during the confrontations with security forces. Withdrawal of the controversial Bills is one of the key demands of the Churachandpur JAC and Kuki social organisations. The KNO clarified that the decision of the February 7 was to consult the civil societies concerned regarding the burial ceremony of the martyrs, adding fixing the date for the event was not an agenda. It further made it clear that the proposal of the Feb-

ruary 13 burial service was made by KNO president PS Haokip and that it was endorsed by the civil societies. KNO also claimed that the Kuki civil bodies agreed to the proposal. KNO said one of the groups in the UPF posted a contradictory statement following the crucial meeting where a consensus was reached among all stakeholders. It claimed that neither JAC members nor the JPO held a meeting to pass a resolution concerning the media reports which said that no decision was taken on the burial service.

Gold inches towards Rs 30,000 New Delhi, February 13 (PTi): Gold prices on February 12 zoomed by up to Rs 1,230, the biggest rise in a day this year, to multi-month high in major bullion markets of the country on continued buying by jewellers and retailers for ongoing wedding season amid overnight gains in global market. At Chennai, gold prices climbed the most by Rs 1,230 to Rs 29,605 per 10 grams. Bullion markets were closed yesterday following strike by Gem and Jewellery Trade Federation against the government's decision to make PAN card mandatory for transactions of Rs 2 lakh and above. In the national capital, the precious metal recorded a significant rise of Rs 850 to trade at Rs 29,650, a level last seen on May 16, 2014. Now, the yellow metal has gained Rs 2,600 in eleven straight sessions, its longest winning streak this year. The precious metal has recorded the biggest sin-

gle-day rise this year. In addition, a depreciating rupee against the dollar, making imports costlier, supported the upside in the precious metal prices. The precious metal rose by Rs 275 to Rs 29,260 per 10 grams in Mumbai, while at Kolkata it gained Rs 260 to Rs 29,800 per 10 grams. Bullion traders attributed the rise in precious metal prices to sustained buying by jewellers as well

as retailers driven by ongoing wedding season. Besides, a better trend overseas where gold climbed 4.14 per cent to over one-year high of USD 1,246.40 an ounce in New York in yesterday's trade also influenced bullion prices in the domestic markets, they said. In futures trade, the April contracts of the metal however was trading 1.14 per cent lower at Rs 29,450 per 10 grams on the MCX.

BMW i8 is now the top-selling hybrid sports car in the world New Delhi, February 13 (NDTV auTo): BMW i8, that made its global premiere in 2013, was recently crowned the world's highest-selling hybrid sports car. Global sales of the Bavarian luxury carmaker's first purpose-built, plug-in hybrid sports car eclipsed the combined figure of all other hybrid sports cars. To be precise, a total of 5,456 units of the BMW i8 were sold last year. Though BMW first debuted the i8 at the 2013 Frankfurt International Motor Show, the car went on sale in international markets only in August, 2014. In India, the BMW i8 made an appearance at the 2014 Auto Expo before being launched here in February, 2015. With that being said, BMW will present the first special-edition model of

the i8 at the Geneva Motor Show - the Protonic Red Edition. The BMW i8 Protonic Red Edition gets 'Protonic Red' paint finish with accents in Frozen Grey metallic, BMW W-spoke 470 light-alloy wheels, red double-stitching, and applications in high-grade carbon fibre and ceramic

among others provisions. The inaugural special-edition will be built in Leipzig from July. Ian Robertson, BMW AG Board Member for Sales and Marketing, said, "The success of the BMW i8 speaks for itself. It is already the world's most successful hybrid sports

2016 Triumph Tiger Sport officially unveiled New Delhi, February 13 (NDTV auTo): British motorcycle marque, Triumph has finally unveiled its much awaited Tiger Sport adventure tourer. The bike is basically an adventure version of the two-wheeler manufacturer's popular street fighter - the 2016 Speed Triple. Officially unveiled at the MCN London ExCel Motorcycle Show, the 2016 Triumph Tiger Sport sits between the Tiger 800 series and the larger displacing Tiger Explorer. In terms of design and looks, as mentioned earlier, the Triumph Tiger Sport is more inspired from the Speed Triple than the Tiger series. But it doesn't mean that the new Tiger Sport lacks the touring capabilities of its lineage. The bike efficiently

carries those bold design elements and aggressive character lines. The fairing design at the front looks much clean and wellcrafted and it also comes with the 1050 stickering. The Tiger Sport comes with twin-beam headlamps and longer visor for managing windblast. The single and wide seat and riding posture looks welldesigned and match the tourer persona of the bike. As for features, the new 2016 Triumph Tiger Sport comes with ride-by-wire throttle, multiple riding modes, multi-level traction control, cruise control and ABS as standard. Other equipment includes adjustable windscreen, Slipper clutch, revised freeflow exhaust system, grippier footpegs, redesigned rear-view mirrors and new silver paintjobs. Thanks to the Tiger Sport, as men- driving modes - Rain, Road matt-black or aluminium- the new-age electronics, tioned earlier, comes three and Sport.

The bike sports the latest version of Triumph's popular 1050cc in-linethree engine that also powers the 2016 Speed Triple but has been retuned for the Tiger Sport. While the actual power figures and specifications are yet to be announced, the engine is claimed to deliver better fuel economy and increased torque. Talking about the engine Triumph says, "Designed to tackle every journey, from a trip to the office to a lap of your favourite Sunday afternoon ride, the new Tiger Sport isn't just an everyday motorcycle it's a motorcycle you will want to ride every day." Currently both the Tiger 800 and the Explorer are on sale in India, but it's unlikely that the Tiger Sport will be launched in India anytime soon.

New york, February 13 (iaNS): US technology giant Apple has reportedly announced to launch iPhone 5se and a new iPad Air on March 15, a media report said. The new 4-inch iPhone would be available online and in retail stores on March 18. Apple is unlikely to offer pre-orders for the new devices, tech website 9to5mac reported on Friday. in carbon pool. The communities are preserving to mitigate Climate Change. They should get enough support from government of India and international organisation.” About the film: The film documents the Community Conserved Areas in Sendenyu village under Tseminyu and Sukhai village in Zunheboto. The two villages have been con-

serving the forest on their private land for the past 15 years. No one is allowed to enter the community forest. There is a strict ban on hunting, fishing, logging and collection of minor forest produce like honey and medicinal plants etc. The village court fines anyone who is caught breaking the law in Sendenyu. The result: Sendenyu Community Biodiversity Reserve is now teeming

with wildlife. The animals that were once considered extinct in the area are being sighted again, the release said. The birds that were always weary of human beings because of the rampant hunting can be seen flocking the reserve. Large flowering trees, which were once cut even before they could reach a flowering age, are blooming, it added. But, there are challeng-

es. This reserve was formed on the land that was donated by the private owners. Like the rest of North East India, agriculture is the main source of income in Nagaland. The felling of trees in the private land for the timber constitutes a major portion of any Naga family’s livelihood. After restraining themselves for 15 long years, some families now want to exploit the timber from their part of land in the biodiversity reserve. How can the livelihood of these Naga families be ensured? Can schemes like REDD+ and Carbon Credits support them? Can international organizations and the government help Sendenyu save its forest? The film portrays the beginning of a huge change in the lifestyle of the Naga people. People that were once hunters are now turning into conservationists. Nagaland is changing for sure. But…

NPF charts for a comeback in 2018 election Morung Express News Dimapur | February 13

Like the mythological ‘Phoenix”, the Naga People’s Front (NPF) today sought to make a comeback in the 2018 assembly election by rising from its own ashes- the crisis within the oldest regional party in North East. In a clarion call to all NPF legislators, central office bearers and party workers, NPF general secretary, KG Kenye, today said that it was high time to bury the hatchet of past misunderstanding and to look forward to a future of reconciliation. In the aftermath of the leadership tussle that virtually split the NPF party into two camps and the continuing reverberations, the NPF general secretary appealed for more time for the party hierarchy to repair the damages and to accommodate the interests and grievances of legisla-

tors and party workers. “Give us time to clean and sweep wherever we are required to,” Kenye said in his address at the “Dimapur District DAN legislators coordination meeting” organized by NPF Dimapur Division held at the division office. The party might be enjoying power for three consecutive terms; Kenye said but reminded that the main vision or slogan of the ‘Cock Party’ is not just for the sake of mere power but for a higher political future of Nagas. NPF working president, Apong Pongener, in his address dwelled on the

intricate and bonding relationship between a political party and the party-led government. “The party is watching who is innovative and committed. We may be forced to raise our voices if the legislators are not sincere,” he said, while reminding that the party has a commitment to keep to the people of Nagaland. Apong also informed that a team of NPF leaders would be visiting Shamator and Kiphire on February 16 next to hold talks with the tribal leaders in the aftermath of the violence there. “In such tragic times, we

cannot just watch it from a distance. We have to go there.” Advisor, Urban Development, SI Jamir, recently expelled from the state Congress, said that there is no difference of ideology between the INC and the NPF. “The difference is only with the BJP. Both the INC and NPF are secular parties.” Other legislators including Jacob Zhimomi, parliamentary secretary for Irrigation and Flood Control, Jacob Zhimomi, Tovihoto Ayemi, chairman of NIDC and sitting MLA, Zhaleo Rio also addressed the meeting.

‘Women have strength to be voices of peace’

Kohima Excise personnel seized 50 kg of ganja concealed in a bonnet of a taxi (Sumo - NL 02T 1439) on February 10. The driver, identified as Pavei, 28, was arrested and booked for violation of NDPS Act '85 and forwarded to judicial custody along with the vehicle for further investigation.

aLigarh, February 13 (TNN): "Peace matters, regardless of the past," said Rosemary Dzuvichu, director, Women Studies Centre, Nagaland University and advisor of Naga Mothers' Association. Her statement, at the 11th IG Khan Memorial Lecture here indicated that she was investing faith in the strength of women to be voices of peace. The lecture, on the theme of 'Borders and Social Justice', was organized by the family members of the slain Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) professor IG Khan, under the IG Khan Memorial Trust and Cultural Education Centre at the university. Dzuvichu pointed

out how women, despite suffering from violence were committed to peace. "Women have been the worst victims of militarization, suffering rape, murder and violence. Despite everything we have gone through, we women are not talking of anger and hatred. We are talking of peace. All of us, irrespective of borders and boundaries, must learn this language of peace," she said. The activist was visibly emotional while talking about the dead bodies of youths being denied rightful burial at Churachandpur in Manipur. The youths were killed in violent protests over the passing of the Inner Line Permit bills in the state

assembly. "It has been 150 days and their bodies have not been allowed the dignity of burial, which is the right of the dead," Dzuvichu said. As an advisor of NMA that has 'Shed No More Blood' as its motto, she shared tales of journeys into the jungles of Nagaland and neighboring states urging the leaders of militant factions "to talk - so that peace is maintained". Since the 1997 truce between NSCN-IM and the Centre, NMA has been active in negotiations to settle complex issues. Dzuvichu also talked of the need to provide basic amenities to people living on the margins, including basic healthcare

for women, and said that socially-aware citizens needed to go to the grassroots problems, leaving behind their ivory towers. "According to the Human Rights Law Network, there have been 20 PILs filed on the condition of women's health in Nagaland. The anganwadis are being used as storehouses when they should be used to give women good pre and post-natal care," she added. Dzuvichu also said that gender justice could only come about if men and women worked together as equal partners. "Women must not only get rights as citizens of India, but also dignity and justice through changes in archaic laws," she said.

The sovereign birthright of our nation is inalienable • The Ear-boring Halfworn Mongoloid people who were discriminately called "Naka" by the Burmese and "Nunga" by the Assamese are peculiarly known as the Naga/s. • The "Land" which permanently belongs to the Nagas is called "Nagaland". • By tradition, we Nagas are a sovereign independent people and a free Nation. Therefore our forebears have legitimately laid all the foundation stones of our Nation under the farsighted leadership of the mandated Naga National Council (NNC) with the evolution of the modem world. Thus our people

have solemnly acknowledged in the Preamble of the Yehzabo (Constitution) of our Nation in the name of Almighty God. The Preamble reads: We, the people of Nagaland, solemnly acknowledging that the sovereignty over this earth and the entire universe belongs to almighty God alone, and the authority of the people to be exercised on the territory is a sacred trust from God, who sustained our forefathers, the national workers and our people through the years of trial, and Having our attach-

ment to the truth of popular sovereignty as declared on 22nd March 1956 and the articles contained in the provisional Yehzabo of 1962, to establish national institutions based on the common ideals of democracy, justice, liberty, equality and fraternity among the people composing it, Do hereby adopt in our national assembly the amended Yehzabo of Nagaland this twenty fifth day of July in the year of our lord nineteenth hundred and sixty eight. God has given us a blessed land with the sovereign Birthright of a Nation. This Birthright of ours

is inalienable and nothing is more precious than this right in the world. Therefore, we always resist and exist it by sacrificing our lives and our all. We are a nation. We have nothing to be worried at all and it is unnecessary to go into details. We Nagas are not Indian, no never. The 69 years old Indo-Naga war/conflict is purely a conflict of invasion by India against Nagaland. Hence, a logical solution is inevitable. But we must be vigilant and wise at this critical juncture. And we must keep this, in our deepest heart, that: • A Christian who ex-

pects salvation from Satan will automatically go to hell. • A plaintiff who expects right decree from the defendant is a stupidest plaintiff. • In the same way, if we expect a logical solution from India, the aggressor, our nation will be the heaviest loser among the nations in the world. So it is the world to settle the 69 years old Indo-Naga conflict. Fellow Nagas let us once again assemble in the original home. So that no one can stop us... Capt. group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds, "What does love mean?" The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined. See what you think:

All of the wonderful things that a person can offer — their skills, talents, humor — can go unnoticed or misunderstood because it doesn't arrive in a form most people recognize. People who live with autism are constantly misunderstood, and yet they want the same things everyone wants: love and acceptance. This is a story about how one amazing Chili's server, Lauren, proved that you can make anyone's day by opening your mind and heart to what most people don't understand.

Anna Kaye MacLean knows autism personally Her sister Arianna is seven years old and was born with autism. To give their mother a bit of time to herself, the girls often go on little "sister dates." These outings are always fun for the pair, but things do have to happen a certain way. Arianna needs order and routine to feel safe and happy. Autism is still not very well understood Autism is finally something most people have heard of because loving families of children with autism are bringing awareness to the complex condition. Her autism

doesn't stop Arianna from having a happy and complete life, but understanding can be hard to come by. When Arianna makes requests at restaurants, Anna has come to expect all sorts of confused reactions. They went out to eat with burgers on the brain On this day, these "ladies who lunch" decided to stop by a Chili's in their hometown of Midvale, Utah. When Arianna's burger got to the table, it was not what she was expecting. The burger was cut in half, a distinctive deviation from their usual routine. Arianna piped up, “It’s broken. I need anoth-

"I knew it sounded silly, but if we could just order an additional one we will gladly pay for it because there was nothing wrong with the one that was originally brought out,” the big sister requested. “I brought you a broken cheeseburger?! You know what, I’ll have them cook you a new one!” “A couple of minutes later, Lauren arrived back at our table with cheeseburger #2. Arianna said, ‘OH FANK YOU! You fixed my cheeseburger!’ When Lauren walked away, Arianna just sat there for a sec-

Jenny - age 8 "Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it every day." Noelle - age 7 "Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well." Elaine -age 5 "Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Robert Redford." But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget," Jessica - age 8 Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about a contest he was asked to judge. The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child. The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there. When his Mother asked him what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said, "Nothing, I just helped him cry."

ne day long ago, some sailors set out to sea in their sailing ship. One of them brought his pet monkey along for the long journey. When they were far out at sea, a terrible storm overturned their ship. Everyone fell into the sea, and the monkey was sure that he would drown. Suddenly a dolphin appeared and picked him up. They soon reached the island and the monkey came down from the dolphin’s back. The dolphin asked the monkey, “Do you know this place?” The monkey replied, “Yes, I do. In fact, the king of the island is my best friend. Do you know that I am actually a prince?” Knowing that no one lived on the island, the dolphin said, “Well, well, so you are a prince! Now you can be a king!” The monkey asked, “How can I be a king?” As the dolphin started swimming away, he answered, “That is easy. As you are the only creature on this island, you will naturally be the king!” Those who lie and boast may end up in trouble.

FAITH LEAF

E

verybody has a fear which is a part of our human emotion. Every person has his or her own fear, the young and old irrespective of all age and gender. As we walk our life’s path this year, how do we walk in faith? Many parents have legitimate concern for their family and children. Many young people, who are studying and unemployed youth are facing some of the depressing situation. As long as we live and walk we will face many unpleasant situations in our life. This year as we take our walk, how do we plan to walk? Straight or uneven it all depends on our perspective. Our mind is one of the powerful organs that can be either direction for our good or for worst. If we see only fear as our focal point, what we visualize or internalize we absorb and reflect it outward. So how do we prepare our mind in to best possible way to live a balance Christian life in God’s given space and time for us? I want to draw us to four ‘Looking’ perspectives!

INSPIRATIONAL STORIES, MESSAGES, POEMS & SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES

What Do You See?

Fear wake us up or push us down low. Reaffirming yesterday’s time is never a loss of time if it’s for our learning today. Being human it is certain we will encounter fear but let us be reminded that the One who is within us is greater than the one who is against us. When we remember what God did in our past it will give us confidence for us to walk, with our head held high today. The consequences of looking at our own direction without listening to God’s direction are always filled with terrible fear. Fear paralyzes even the healthy men and women, make active into passive and shifts our focus. Fear may exist but when we walk in God’s divine shadow then we experience the great difference of being with and without God. Many people see only Egyptian Army not God’s army that is greater than any army in the world. In I Samuel 17 readI. As Moses was questioned by Israelites, today many people are unthinkably hasty to question God’s leadership? Asking and questioning is different, it is better to ask his will than question why he does the things he is doing. God might be leading us in the business of liberating us in harder ways and if we question his wisdom, we may shatter God’s good plan for us and bring our own downfall. We better listen to him. Confused people will always have confusion as their conclusion and it will even pollute the mind of their neighbor too.

III. Looking Attentively ! Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand still” (Exodus 14: 13). In the midst of our entire jumpy situation we have to ‘stand still’ and not rush here and there like the restless wave. Being attentive is one of the best solutions for us to see a path when there seem to be no exit. There is a path when all hope is gone from the human mathematical calculation. We should allow God to do his will in us. God cannot enter into a person’s life when he or she is full of himself or herself. Moses stood and shouted authoritatively but used the words of encouragement to people. These prophetic words need to herald and echo in the hills of Naga and North East States of India too. “Do not be afraid, Standstill, and see the salvation of the Lord.” Halting is never late in our time rather it is time to refresh our hectic and hasty generation. Today’s WhatsApp and facebook generation need to heed God’s voice. Today if you see insufficiency in your personal aspects, focus on God who is actively intervening in every spheres of life. Many young people are so attentive to their own peers and friends’ IV. Looking Upward ! advice and suggestions but rarely to elders And the Lord said to Moses, “why do and to God. They embrace and welcome it you cry to me? Tell the children of Israel to as one of the best in the world but often do go forward.”(Exodus 14:15). To go forward in

Taming that Tongue

I

Jonathan Santiago

f you've ever said anything you regret keep reading. Here's what James (via the Holy Spirit) says about the tongue: Indeed, we put bits in horses' mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! James 3:3-4 NKJV Having control over something as mighty as a ship or horse is a good thing. And having control over something as potent as our tongue allows us to be highly effective Disciples of Christ. It allows us to speak life into others, edify, comfort, exhort, all while binding those things that are not of God. That's the good news. The bad news is that James goes on to say that no one can tame the tongue! If no human can tame his or her tongue, what hope is there? The hope, as you probably guessed, is in Jesus Christ. When we are spiritually reborn, we are born with the ability to call on the power of the Holy Spirit to give us wisdom and temperance. OK, so if you're like me you've

never said anything you've regretted once you were a born again believer, correct? Ha, of course not. As I was reading this passage I was seeking how I can more effectually bridle my tongue and use if for edification. Lo and behold, James offers the solution a few verses down in the chapter. James first lets us know what is clearly not of God: But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but [is] earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking [exist], confusion and every evil thing [are] there. James 3:14-16 NKJV Envy and self-seeking are mentioned twice. Whether praying for someone or sharing a scripture, if there is any envy or self-seeking in what we are saying, it is not of God. We must not lie against this truth. I basically imagine God saying, "Who are you kidding? You know I wouldn't have you say something that is envious or self-seeking in my name." We cannot judge what we speak merely by the words themselves, but by the spiritual wisdom from which the words are spoken. James uses some pretty powerful terms to describe the wisdom that is self-seeking – demonic and evil are just two of them.

When we are about to speak we would do well to stop and ask: 1. Is what I'm about to say based on envy? 2. Am I self-seeking right now? If we answer yes to any of these we should wait to speak. James gave us the qualities to judge bad wisdom by, but he also gave us the qualities to know good wisdom by! Let's continue on in the chapter. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. James 3:17-18 NKJV Before we speak, we should also ask ourselves the following - Is what I'm about to say: 1. Pure (or is there confusion or uncertainty)? 2. Peaceable? 3. Gentle? 4. Willing to yield (be compliant or obeying)? 5. Merciful? 6. Free from partiality and hypocrisy? These are two checklists God gives us. The wisdom behind list one can cause a destructive fire that wreaks havoc. The wisdom behind list two will edify and yield righteous fruit.

The God of a Second Chance

I

Terry Meeuwsen

began working in television in Milwaukee in 1978. While I'd never set out to do talk TV, I felt at home from the beginning, and being in the public eye gave me many opportunities to share my faith. Because it was fairly common knowledge in the community that I was a Christian, the publicity of going through a divorce was difficult. That winter, I went home at the end of each day to a cold, silent house. Emotionally depressed and grieved, I would then climb into bed with my hat, coat, and boots still on and sleep till morning. I'm not sure when that heavy veil of grief and emptiness began to lift. But sometime that spring, I became aware of the sweet smell of the wet earth beginning to thaw, the songs of promise that were being sung with such abandon from every nest and perch. I began to move on. I had no intention of dating and no interest in pursuing a new relationship. Though I loved children, I had accepted that there would be none in my first marriage. I was in my thirties, and the prospect of marriage and a family seemed remote and unlikely. Yet God had other plans. I met Andy Friedrich at a retirement celebration for a coworker. He had gone through a divorce a number of years before that, and after much floundering and searching, a friend had led him to Christ. But no one had discipled him, so he had little knowledge of the Scriptures and wasn't in a church or study group of any kind. Initially we met to talk about the Lord. In time, I grudgingly conceded to a date, but not without apprehension. Even though Andy was ready for a relationship, I was still gun-shy -- so he simply waited. With tenderness and kindness and an incredible amount of patience, he broke down any barriers I'd put up. He was faithful, trustworthy, and committed to the Lord and

not realize it is one of the Pandora box later. Many young people in our Naga context assume their parents and elders as less knowledgeable especially in their teens and later discover that parents know much more than them. Attentive listening helps us to discern the way out. Though situations seems impossible one thing we have and can do is trust God. “But those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength”.( Isaiah 40: 31). Isaiah 64: 4 tell about God as one “Who acts for those who waits for him” Leadership in any context needs to wait upon God and thus see his hands moving in our affair because he is interested even in our smallest matter. Church Leadership in Nagaland also must listen to God in such hour as this when young and old are seeking God’s will desperately but many churches are run by Deacon Board and committees. All schedules need disciplined planning but events calendar of churches are leading many churches. Have we pushed out God’s spirit from our churches? In every new incoming month, do we look up only to events calendar? No doubt we need various committees but the greatest necessity of the church is the leading of God’s Spirit. If churches are run by the elite and retired Naga government officials there are possibilities that churches will become institutions not family. Sadly Naga churches are not as it should be because many confused esteem Board and Committee are taking decision of the church affairs. Let us look up to God and lead the church of God. Naga people are in need of shepherd that can lead the church and say this is the way to walk upon. Confused people will scatter anywhere in the wilderness and will be a victim at the end. Moses said, “The Lord will fight for you.”(Exodus 14: 15, Deut 1 : 29-30). Any battle of life we should be willing to surrender to God. If we only know that it is the Lord battle we will not make blunder after blunder in life.

to me. We were married a little more than a year after we'd begun dating. The Lord used Andy in many ways to help heal old wounds in me. He offered both of us a new beginning, a clean slate, a hope, and a future. And I'm now a mom -- not one, not two, but seven children, each a precious, unique gift from the Lord. God has surely given me more than I could hope for or ask. The story of Joseph in the book of Genesis is one of my favorites. Sold by his brothers into slavery, taken to a foreign land, unfairly accused and imprisoned, and with little hope or expectation of ever seeing his family again, Joseph was in what seemed an impossible situation. Despite all that, the Bible says, "The Lord was with him." God allowed the testing to build character in Joseph. Joseph went through years of waiting and suffering before he saw God's plan in it all. God used Joseph to save Egypt, the surrounding nations, and Joseph's own family. God's plans and purposes are so much bigger and greater than our own. At the end of his story, Joseph says, "You meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day" (Genesis 50:20). That same truth is reconfirmed in the book of Romans in the New Testament. "All things work together for good to those who love God" (Romans 8:28). God is indeed, the God of second chances. Thank You, Lord for the constant message of restoration that runs throughout Your Word. Thank You for the glimpse of Your handiwork that is so much bigger and more beautiful than I could have imagined. Help me to be faithful in times of testing. Align my life with Your will. to the red sea is not sensibly right. It is not a marathon race rather a question of faith. Crying is not the solution but to cry out in prayer is the solution. Crying does not help us to move forward in life but it makes us unmovable. Today when you look up, solution drop down! When you look down, problems grow up. We better look up, walk up and live up not look down, walk down and live down. Moses obeyed and his mere rod that he has been using for many years as shepherd which did not perform miracles in the past but this time God ask him to raise his rod, a mere rod. He strikes and the sea open the way, the natural become supernatural. Let us also look upon God for his intervention not for performance or for entertainments purpose but to glorify God. God has his solution for us in our context as well in any part of this whole wide world. We are called to raise our staff in God’s name. There are more than 7000 promises in God’s word. When we log in to the Word of God in our life there is victory in his name. Let us live and act out, by raising God’s Word above that have been trampled down in our society. The word “obedient” does not have any alternative meaning or option when God command us to do unnatural thing. Let us obey fully so that God can erase fully ‘IM’ from the word ‘impossible’ to make it possible for us in our impossible situation this year. “For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and love and of sound mind.”( II Tim 1: 7) Any situation in our life may threaten us with fear and shake our faith yet it does not end there. Best part of life sprout from those offshoots. Better days are coming on our path though situation seems so grim and bleak. We better be still by looking upward for him to intervene. If we fear to go ahead, what we fear will consume us. Israelite feared to die in the wilderness so after 40 years all of them who were above 20 years died in the wilderness without proper burial (Numbers 14: 29-30). There may be sea on our path but there will be a boat somewhere to take us on the other side of the shore. Let us not stare at the big sea and its tempest but let us look up to God who made that sea. May God usher us in the path of hope in this world filled with uncertainties. Fear or Hope! The choice is yours!

Teaching sound biblical doctrine Selie Visa Introduction: Doctrinal differences exist not only between cults and denomination or between denominations and denominations. Differences also exist within the same group or the same denominations. A person may think that his or her belief is right even though it is biblically wrong. Complications arise when such people try to impose their views on others without bothering to make any effort to find out the truth as revealed in the word of God. With so many new doctrines making their way into our theological colleges and churches, and bombarded by false teachings of televangelists on many television channels, it is much more imperative for us than ever to go back to the Bible to find the truth for our own good and also to counter all such false doctrines. Turning away from truth to myths: 2 Timothy 4:2-4 “Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage--with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” Preachers are not to air their own opinions but to proclaim God's eternal, authoritative Word of truth as contained in the Scriptures. The minister has to be on duty constantly, ready for any emergency at any time. In addition to preaching the Word, Timothy is to "correct" or reprove, "rebuke" or admonish, and "encourage" or comfort and exhort. That is, both the positive and the negative must be included. But preachers must do these things with great patience and careful instruction. Paul also warns Timothy that the time will come when people will not be able to tolerate "sound doctrine". Timothy's major task in Ephesus is to defend and proclaim doctrines in accord with the truth of God's Word. He must do this constantly, since the time will come when people will not listen to the truth. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them many teachers who will say what they want them to say, in order to gratify their self-willed hearts. People like this will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to senseless "myths".

ductive work. They belong to that class of people who are ruining whole households, disturbing and turning upside down the faith of entire families. They achieve these disastrous results by teaching things that simply must not be presented as Christian truth. "For the sake of dishonest gain" unveils their materialistic motives, the desire to enrich themselves at the expense of the spiritual welfare of their victims. These Cretan false teachers were all the more dangerous because of the known nature of the people on whom they preyed upon. As evidence, Paul quotes a line from Epimenides who was a 6th-5th century B.C. Cretan poet and religious reformer. This man had intimate knowledge of his own people and was esteemed by them as a "prophet." Paul was willing to accept this evaluation in order to underline the authority of his own judgment. The quotation establishes the picture without exposing Paul to the charge of being anti-Cretan. It put the Cretans on the horns of a dilemma. They must either admit the truthfulness of his verdict concerning them or deny the charge and brand their own prophet a liar. The triple charge that Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons is supported by other writers. So notorious was their reputation for falsehood that the Greek word kretizo (to Crete-ize) meant "to lie." "Evil brutes" stigmatizes them as having sunk to the level of beasts, unrestrained in their brutality. "Lazy gluttons" underlines their greed as idle sensualists who desired to be filled without exerting any personal effort to earn an honest living.

The person behind the teaching: 1 Timothy 4:16 “Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.” The first thing that every Christian worker must watch is his or her own life-- not only one's outward life but also one's inner thoughts and feelings. No matter how straight people may be in their doctrine or how effective they may be in their teaching, if there is a flaw in their inner or outer lives, it will ruin them. This is where many ministers have failed tragically. While watching over others, pastors must keep an eye on themselves. To "persevere" means to persist in doing something. Paul is instructing Timothy to keep on doing the things he has been writing about. By so doing, he will save Teaching for dishonest gains: both himself and his hearers. For a soul-winner to save Titus 1:10-12 For there are many rebellious people, others and lose his or her own soul is an unmitigated mere talkers and deceivers, especially those of the cir- tragedy. Modi woos global investors at 'Make in India' week; no retrospective taxation MuMbai, February 13 (iaNS): Unfolding the red carpet for domestic and foreign investors, Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the "Make in India Week" here on Saturday, showcased as the largest event of its kind in the country to project it as the preferred global hub for manufacturing. The prime minister also listed a number of initiatives taken by his government to make it easier for doing business in India, along with enabling policy decisions and corrections. "I repeat, we also decided there will be no retrospective taxation," he said at the inaugural. "Make in India has become the biggest brand India ever created. It has captured the imagination of people, business, institutions, political leaders and media," he said at the National Sports Club of India's indoor stadium that was packed beyond its 5,000 capacity. Modi said the efforts were showing. "Our foreign direct investment inflow has gone by 48 percent since the day my government came into office," the prime minister said. He also said concerns over intellectual property and bankruptcy laws were also being addressed. "Almost on a daily basis we are trying to remove the bottlenecks that were affecting business," he said. It was, therefore, not surprising that a host of mul-

tilateral institutions have said India will log even better growth that the present 7.5 percent in the coming years, he added. "In 2014-15, India contributed 12.5 percent to global growth. It's contribution to to the global growth is 68 percent higher than its share of world economy," he said, amid applause from the audience, which included chief ministers, ambassadors, industrialists and policy-makers. Modi said India was particularly keen on scaling up investments in infrastructure -- from roads and railways to digital networks and clean energy. Towards this, he said, interest-free bonds were the next on the agenda. "Do not wait. Do not relax. You should take advantage of the immense opportunities in India." The event also saw the Time India award conferred on Tata Steel for best in class manufacturing, Hero MotoCorp for innovator of the year and Yogesh and Rajesh Agarwal of Ajanta Pharma for young maker of the year. India ready as a global manufacturing hub Earlier, Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said India was ready as a global manufacturing hub. "The idea of the Make in India plan was to make the environment in the country from the regulated to a facilitator," said Sitharaman,

adding this has resulted in a vast improvement in ease of doing business in the country. "This is a moment India is cherishing." In his maiden Independence Day address on August 15, 2014, the prime minister had said India must become a global manufacturing hub, with "zero defect" in product quality and "zero affect" in its impact on environment. The "Make in India" campaign was launched a month later on September 25. Earlier, Modi inaugurated the Make In India Centre at the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority Grounds with his Swedish and Finnish counterparts, Kjell Stefan Lofven and Juha Petri Sipila, respectively. The two dignitaries also addressed the inaugural event.

Themed on innovation, design and sustainability, the centre showcases some of the country's most trendsetting products and manufacturing processes before the world for the first time after the global launch of the Make In India initiative 17 months ago, commerce ministry officials said. Those showcasing their respective strengths include corporate houses like the Tatas and Reliance groups, four top oil companies, as also institutions like the Indian Space Research Organisation and the Defence Research and Development Organisation. Make in India Centre includes sector-specific pavilions showcasing 11 focus sectors of the six-day event, 17 state exhibitions and several country pavilions. The area covered is

MuZaFFarNaGar, February 13 (reuterS): At a campaign rally in a north Indian city, a visibly drunk election worker from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's nationalist party climbs unsteadily onto the stage after being called to speak. Swaying, he unzips his leather jacket, drops a saffron party flag and declares: "I want to teach Muslims a lesson; a lesson that will prove Hindu unity and protect our religion from Islam." A year before Uttar Pradesh holds a state election that could make or break Modi's chances of a second term, political opponents, analysts and commentators say his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is retesting a divisive formula at a by-election on Saturday in a troubled corner of India's most populous state. It was here in Muzaffarnagar, in 2013, that at least 65 people were killed in communal clashes between Hindus and Muslims. Around 12,000 people were driven from their homes in the surrounding villages where farmers grow sugarcane. The following year, the BJP won 71 of 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh in a general election, handing Modi India's biggest parliamentary majority in three decades. Despite two major state poll defeats since, the BJP recently re-appointed Amit Shah as its campaign manager, counting on him to win again in the 2017 regional vote. Shah, who holds the rank of party president, was banned by the Election Commission of India from campaigning in 2014 for statements promoting "hatred and ill will" between religions.

some 220,000 square metres and accommodates 27 halls for 190 companies to show their prowess. Officials said the Make in India Week is an enabling event to showcase India and attract investment, while also providing opportunities to the states. Also planned are some 20 sector-specific seminars in areas like policy, business climate and intellectual property. The programmes will see the participation of central and state ministers, chief ministers, senior government officials, top industrialists and businesspeople from India and overseas, and several government and business delegations from abroad. Government delegations from 49 nations and business teams from 68 countries have ALL-OUT ATTEMPT converged here. At the BJP rally in Muzaffarnagar, a

town of 300,000 people, a businessman chants a Hindu prayer and, to cheers, says girls should not fall for Muslim boys waging a "Love Jihad" against his community. As the party worker totters off the wobbly podium, he gets a pat on the back from Sanjeev Balyan, the union agriculture minister who was elected as the local member of parliament in the 2014 landslide. Balyan, 42, is being tried in a Muzaffarnagar court for rioting, disturbing the peace and unlawful assembly during the 2013 clashes, his lawyer said. He spent 12 days in prison before being granted bail. Further hearings are pending, and Balyan has pleaded his innocence. With this reporter present, Balyan gives no speech; only expressing gratitude to his voters. Asked later by Reuters about the broader significance of the Muzaffarnagar by-election for Hindu unity and for Uttar Pradesh, he described it as a prelude to "an all-out final attempt to protect Hindus." BIGGEST PRIZE Modi must win in Uttar Pradesh, India's biggest electoral prize, to sustain his hope of one day gaining full control of parliament, where he lacks a majority in the Rajya Sabha that represents the states. A victory there would help the 65-yearold leader advance his development agenda by passing land, tax and labour reforms that have been thwarted by the opposition. Defeat could turn his government into a lame duck ahead of the 2019 general election. Hindus make up nearly 80 percent of India's 1.3 billion people. Uttar Pradesh, home to one in six of the population, is also predominantly Hindu. But, in the west of the state, Muslims are in a slight majority.

Opposition comes together against JNU crackdown, hits out at Modi govt India criticises UN plan to combat extremism New deLhi, February 13 (iaNS): The Congress, CPI-M, CPI and JD-U on Saturday came together to participate in a protest meet against the arrest of JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar in a sedition case. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi accused the Narendra Modi government of trying to crush students' voices in university campuses by ordering police crackdowns. Speaking at the protest meet held in the JNU campus here, Gandhi said: "They (government) do not understand that by crushing you (students) they are making you stronger." He was referring to Friday's police action at the JNU campus and the arrest of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar in a sedition case on Friday. The students' union declared a strike in the university from Monday onwards. At the end of the protest, senior Congress leader and former Union minister Anand Sharma was attacked by an assailant allegedly linked to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). The protest was held in a volatile atmosphere with the ABVP activists constantly shouting slogans against what they called "anti-India sloganeering" by students at a commemorative function held at the campus to mark the death

of Afzal Guru who was hanged in the Parliament attack case. Gandhi was received by the ABVP activists with black flags and cries of "go back". Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken, Communist Party of India-Marxist general secretary Sitaram Yechury, Communist Party of India national secretary D. Raja, senior Communist Party of India-Marxist-Leninist leader Kavita Krishnan and others also joined the protest attended by a 2,000-strong gathering of students and teachers. Gandhi drew comparisons with the Hyderabad university controversy involving students linked to ABVP and Ambedkar Students' Association (ASA) and consequent suicide of a Dalit student activist, Ro-

hit Vemula, following his suspension from the university. "I was in Hyderabad a few days back. A youngster there expressed himself and the government says that he is an anti-national. What did he do? Later the minister turns around and says that he was not even a Dalit," said Gandhi referring to the NDA government's reaction to the suicide of Vemula of the ASA who was suspended after an ABVP activist accused him of physically assaulting him. Earlier in the day, Yechury, who was himself a JNUSU leader, met union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and demanded the release of the JNUSU leader. "We apprised home minister that whatever is happening is worse than that happened during the

CPI-M politburo to take final call on tie-up with Cong KoLKata, February 13 (iaNS): With the Left Front having given its approval, the CPI-M at the end of its two-day session on Saturday said its politburo will take a final call on the issue of forming an alliance with the Congress for the upcoming West Bengal assembly polls. Chaired by veteran Marxist leader Biman Bose in the presence of general secretary Sitaram Yechury and his predecessor Prakash Karat, the two-day session saw the party discussing its strategy for the crucial assembly polls. "Discussion with parties outside the Left Front are on, and at the session, members also discussed the issue of talks with the Congress. The state com-

mittee's views on the poll strategy will be put forth before the politburo. The politburo and the central committee will take a final call on the issue," the party said in a statement. The CPI-M central committee is scheduled to hold a three-day session from February 16. On Thursday, the Marxists led Left Front -- the state's main opposition -gave the stamp of approval on holding alliance talks with the Congress, but put the ball in the Congress's court, saying it has to approach the combine first with the proposal. With the motto "Oust Trinamool Congress and save Bengal" and "Oust BJP to save India", the party said it will undertake a se-

ries of movements across the state to "save Bengal from anarchy, preserve communal harmony and re-establish democracy". Calling on workers to strengthen the party organisation to take on the Mamata Banerjee government over a host of issues, the party also stressed the need to stand up against communal forces. "Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat is slated to undertake several programmes in the state during February 18-22. Going by the RSS' character, attempts can be made to disrupt the communal harmony in the state. We need to be on our guard and endeavour to preserve communal harmony," the party said.

Emergency. It should be proved that the 20 people, who are being targeted, are at fault," he told reporters after the meeting. "Home minister guaranteed us that action won't be carried out on any innocent person. We demanded him to release the arrested student leader... which he assured us to look into the matter," Yechuri added. A delegation comprising Yechury, Raja and Janata Dal-United secretary general K.C. Tyagi also met Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and requested him to launch an independent probe to establish the authenticity of the evidence provided in the JNU campus incident. Kejriwal later ordered a magisterial inquiry. Kanhaiya Kumar's parents who

live in Bihar also asserted that their son was being victimised for his opposition to Hindutva politics and was not an anti-national. "My son is not anti-national. There is no question of his following an ideology of anti-nationalism. He is a nationalist like hundreds of thousands of youths of his age," said Jaishankar Singh, Kumar's paralysed father. Kumar's mother, Meena Devi, said her son is a nationalist, but not a supporter of RSS-BJP's Hindutva politics. Bharatiya Janata Party national vicepresident Dinesh Sharma however hit out at the CPIM and Congress. "Both Congress and CPI-M who are supporting such antinational elements, should drop India from their party names because they are pursuing anti-national politics. They are as guilty as the protesters," he said. Meanwhile, a group of retired servicemen of the June 1978 batch of the National Defence Academy, who are recipients of the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees from JNU have written a letter to the varsity vice chancellor and said they are unhappy at the ongoing antinational activities like celebration of Afzal Guru inside the campus. "We have told JNU vice chancellor that if such anti-national activity will continue then we are constrained to return our degrees," said Brig. Rakesh Chhibber (retd.) of the batch.

uNited NatioNS, February 13 (iaNS): India has criticised a UN plan to combat violent extremism saying it lacked sufficient options for international cooperation and a unified UN mechanism to tackle the modern-day plague. The Assembly did not adopt the plan Friday and instead opted to give it "further consideration" because of strong differences among nations. The differences centered on whether issues like "foreign occupation" and "self-determination" should be included in it. "The current architecture at the United Nations is not sufficient to tackle this virus (of violent extremism) that threatens us collectively," India's Permanent Representative Syed Akbaruddin told the General Assembly Friday. As an example of the flaws in Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's plan of ac-

tion for fighting violent extremism, Akabaruddin cited the lack of a single contact point to assist countries seeking UN help. Making the case for more international cooperation to deal with the terrorist threat, Akbaruddin said, "What we are tackling is not merely a local problem that can be addressed unilaterally; it is a global contagion. Global links, franchise relations, home-grown terrorism and use of cyberspace for recruitment and propaganda, all these present a new level of threat." The main disagreement that stalled the plan's adoption centered on what Saudi Arabia's Permanent Representative Abdallah Y. AlMouallimi, who spoke on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), described as "foreign occupation" and "denial of selfdetermination." These were not addressed in Ban's plan.

Pakistan's Permanent Representative Maleeha Lodhi joined in asserting that violent extremists exploited injustices done to people under foreign occupation, the denial of the right to selfdetermination, and longfestering and unresolved international disputes were being exploited by violent extremists. She avoided being more specific in the statement that appeared to provide justification for some acts of terrorism. Ban's seven-point plan of action called for dialogue to prevent conflicts; strengthening good governance; promoting human rights and the rule of law; engaging communities; empowering youth; ensuring gender equality and empowering women; improving education and increasing jobs, and strategic communications that also harnesses Internet and social media.

Two soldiers, five militants killed in Kashmir gunfight SriNaGar, February 13 (iaNS): Two soldiers and five militants of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) were killed, while four army men, including a major, were injured in a gun battle in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, officials said. The bodies of five militants were found in Marsari village of Kupwara district, a police official told IANS. Security forces were looking for the bodies of several more guerrillas, believed to have been killed, in the debris of the house that was destroyed in the gunfight that began on Friday evening,

the official said. Personnel from the Indian Army's counter-insurgency Rashtriya Rifles, special operations group (SOG) of police and the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Friday surrounded an abandoned house in Marsari village following information that a group of guerrillas was hiding inside. When the security forces moved close to the house, the militants opened fire at them. In the gunfight that ensued, the house which the guerrillas used as a fortified bunker was destroyed.

Delhi's trafficked sex slaves face "sad" and "horrible" life

SiLiGuri, February 13 (thoMSoN reuterS FouNdatioN): Girls and women trafficked from the poorest states in India and sold for sexual exploitation to brothels in the Indian capital face a sad and horrible life with little hope of escaping, a senior Delhi government official said on Friday. Swati Maliwal, head of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), said she had recently visited the city's red light district of Garstin Bastion Road, popularly known as G.B. Road, where she was shocked by the lack of support given to sex workers. "Every day, girls and women are being brought there. They are bought and sold there for between 5,000 rupees and 100,000 rupees ($75 to $1,500) depending on whether they are virgins or not," Maliwal told an anti-trafficking event in the eastern town of Siliguri.

"They are forced to sleep with up to 30 men daily. Most of the time, they are not given any money as most of it goes to the pimp. It is extremely sad and cannot be justified in independent India. It's just horrible." Almost 36 million people are enslaved worldwide -- trafficked into brothels, forced into manual labour, victims of debt bondage or even born into servitude, says the 2014 Global Slavery Index. Almost half - 16 million - are in India. Many are from poor rural regions and are lured with the promise good jobs or marriage, but end up sold into domestic work, prostitution, or industries such as brick kilns or textile units. Maliwal, who was appointed in July as chairperson of the DCW - a government body which focuses on implementing the safeguards provided for women under the

constitution - said little had been done in the past to protect trafficked sex workers. Despite a committee being set up in 2012 to look into anti-trafficking measures and rehabilitation in Delhi, she said, the committee had not met once until October last year when she had pushed for it. "I really don't understand how the highest levels of the government could do something like that. We had a meeting in October and some good decisions have now come out of it," Maliwal told the gathering of civil society organisations, lawyers, judges and government officials. "Delhi doesn't have a rehabilitation policy, there is no restoration policy for victims and now after this committee met, we are trying to work on it," she added. The DCW is also starting a pilot project where it will partner with

the private sector and select up to 50 rescued women and girls to provide them with training and jobs as well as set up residential schools for the children of sex workers. Maliwal said she also found many other problems faced by the 5,000 sex workers residing in G.B. Road which she said could be easily resolved. Despite an estimated 600,000 condoms being used monthly, none had been distributed by the government for five months due a "technical glitch," she said. "This is very strange and very sorry. You can imagine that if 600,000 condoms are normally being used there, and then there are none, the kind of infection that might spread. It is almost like an epidemic that we are creating," said Maliwal. "We have now issued a notice and ensured that condoms are being distributed."

After 1,000-year of split, pope and Russian patriarch embrace in Cuba

HAVANA, FebruAry 13 (reuters): Pope Francis and Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill embraced and kissed on Friday in a historic meeting, uniting to issue a global appeal for the protection of Christians under assault in the Middle East. Nearly 1,000 years after the Eastern and Western branches of Christianity split apart, the meeting at an airport terminal in Cuba was the first ever between a Roman Catholic pope and a Russian Orthodox patriarch. "In many countries of the Middle East and North Africa whole families, villages and cities of our brothers and sisters in Christ are being completely exterminated," they said in a joint declaration in apparent reference to violence by militant groups such as Islamic State. "Their churches are being barbarously ravaged and looted, their sacred objects profaned, their monuments destroyed." They also said largescale humanitarian aid was required to tend to refugees fleeing Syria and Iraq, lamenting the "massive exodus of Christians." Cuban President Raul Castro stood to the side during the ceremony, enjoying another moment in the international limelight after receiving Francis last year and restoring diplomatic relations with the United States recently, meeting President Barack Obama in Panama in April. Cuba is also sponsoring peace talks between the Colombian government

Pope Francis urges peace in Mexico’s poor, violent corners

MeXICO CIty, FebruAry 13 (reuters): From the U.S. border to the indigenous south, Pope Francis will visit some of the poorest and most violent corners of Mexico on his five-day trip and celebrates Mass on Saturday before an image of the country's patroness, the Virgin of Guadalupe. Chronic violence and corruption will be themes of his visit to the world's second most populous Roman Catholic country, and he will address the plight of migrants trying to reach the United States with a service at the northern border next week. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to join the pope on Saturday afternoon at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, where pilgrims flock from all over Latin America. "Don't be afraid, that is what she tells me," Pope Francis said ahead of his visit, adding that he wanted to reflect silently in front of her image. The pope earlier this month urged Mexicans to fight against corruption and grisly drug gang violence. Some Mexicans are looking to him to take that even further while he's here. "We want him to demand that the president kick out all the corrupt people," said Marbella Vargas, whose son Edgar was one of 43 students abducted and apparently massacred in 2014, a grisly case that hammered the government's reputation. Enrique Pena Nieto has been unable to fulfill his promises to put an end to it. Francis flew into Mexico City on Friday evening for his first visit as leader of the Catholic Church, greeted by cheering crowds, a mariachi band and Pena Nieto. During his visit, the pope will say Mass with indigenous communities in Mexico's poorest state Chiapas, and speak with young people in Morelia, the capital of Michoacan state that has been plagued by violence between drug gangs and armed vigilante groups. More than 100,000 people have been killed in Mexico's drug violence over the last decade and some 26,000 are missing. The pope's trip will end with a prison visit and Mass in the notorious northern border city of Ciudad Juarez, where he will meet relatives of victims of violence. In a reminder of Mexico's corruption and violence, 49 people were killed in a fight between rival gangs in a prison just days before the pope's arrival. There has been speculation that the pope might also meet with relatives of the 43 missing students. Francis has won plaudits for his leadership of the Church over the last three years but in Mexico he may struggle to match the lasting appeal of Pope John Paul II, who made multiple visits to the country. More than half of those polled by newspaper Reforma last month said they identified most with John Paul II, versus 14 percent for Francis.

The Russian Orthodox Church takes a stronger stand on these issues in public than Pope Francis, who supports these teachings but often speaks of other issues such as poverty and protecting the environment, which were also mentioned in the text.

NKorea to halt search Myanmar army chief to get extension as talks with Suu Kyi go on for Japanese abductees tOKyO, FebruAry 13 (reuters): North Korea has declared void an agreement to reopen a probe into the fate of abducted Japanese citizens after Japan imposed sanctions in the wake of Pyongyang’s rocket launch, according to North Korea’s official KCNA news agency. North Korea planned to disband a committee set up in 2014 to look into the whereabouts of Japanese abductees, KCNA said, adding that Japan’s “provocative acts of hostility” toward North Korea would ensure further countermeasures. “The Abe regime has to hold full responsibility for causing such a grave con-

sequence,” it said. Japan said on Wednesday it was imposing sanctions on North Korea after a satellite launch seen by Washington and allies, including Tokyo, as cover for development of ballistic missile technology that could be used to deliver a nuclear weapon. Pyongyang admitted in 2002 to kidnapping 13 Japanese citizens decades ago. Five abductees and their families later returned to Japan but Tokyo wants to know the fate of the remaining eight, who Pyongyang has said are dead, and others that Japan believes were also kidnapped. lobal health officials have said that the Zika virus, which has been linked to severe birth defects in thousands of babies in Brazil, is rapidly spreading in the Americas and could infect up to 4 million people. The race is on to develop a Zika vaccine. The following are some questions and answers about the virus and the current outbreak. How do people become infected? The virus is transmitted to people through the bite of infected female Aedes mosquitoes, the same type of mosquito that spreads dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) said Aedes mosquitoes are found in all countries in the Americas except Canada and continental Chile, and the virus will likely reach all countries and territories of the region where Aedes mosquitoes are found.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who has made resolving the emotive abductees issues a signature pledge of his political career, had stressed it hoped to keep the door to dialogue open. Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said on Friday it was deplorable for North Korea to unilaterally disband the committee, Kyodo news agency reported. He also said Japan was not going to scrap the agreement made by the two countries. Japan eased some sanctions on North Korea in July 2014 in return for the North reopening its probe into the status of the abduction issues, but little progress has been made.

yANGON, FebruAry 13 (reuters): Myanmar's powerful army chief Min Aung Hlaing and his deputy are slated to extend their terms for another five years, a local newspaper said on Saturday, as the military and democracy champion Aung San Suu Kyi negotiate the terms of transition. The move means Min Aung Hlaing has consolidated his power base among the military leadership and would allow the army to avoid a top-level reshuffle at this sensitive period. It will also boost Min Aung Hlaing's position in talks with Suu Kyi. Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) defeated armybacked Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) in the November election, kicking off a lengthy transition that will

end on April 1 when the new government's term begins. The NLD's massive election win means it will be able to push through its presidential candidate during a vote in parliament on March 17. Still, it has to deal with the military, which is guaranteed 25 percent of seats in parliament and three security ministries under the junta-drafted constitution. Details of the talks between the NLD and the army remain murky. "Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, who is turning 60 soon, will take the duty of the commander-inchief for five more years," said the Voice newspaper, citing a military source based in the country's capital Naypyitaw. It added that Min Aung Hlaing's deputy, Soe Win, will also get a five year extension. "The decisions were

What is the history of the Zika virus? The Zika virus is found in tropical locales with large mosquito populations. Outbreaks of Zika virus disease have been recorded in Africa, the Americas, Southern Asia and the Western Pacific. The virus was first identified in Uganda in 1947 in rhesus monkeys and was first identified in people in 1952 in Uganda and Tanzania, according to the World Health Organization.

Can Zika be transmitted through sexual contact? Two cases of possible person-to-person sexual transmission has been described, but the PAHO said more evidence is needed to confirm whether sexual contact is a means of Zika transmission. British health officials reported Zika was found in a man's semen two months after being infected, suggesting the virus may linger in semen long after infection symptoms fade. The WHO has advised women, particularly pregnant women, to use condoms. The PAHO also said Zika can be transmitted through blood, but A Brazilian Army soldier shows a pamphlet which will be distributed in the city, after this is an infrequent transmission mechaa ceremony to mark the graduation from training on how to combat the Aedes aegypti nism. Health authorities in Brazil have also reported an increase in Guillain-Barre syndrome. Long-term health consequences of Zika infection remain unclear. Other uncertainties surround the incubation period of the virus and how Zika interacts with other viruses that are transmitted by mosquitoes such as dengue.

immediately available for comment. The newspaper did not clarify the legal basis for the move and it did not explain whether the decision would require an approval by the president. Myanmar's opaque

and imprecise constitution has confused lawmakers and experts over whether the army chief would need permission from the president, or a change of law, to obtain an extension. Current regulations stipulate that the army chief has to retire at 60. On Thursday, Myanmar's outgoing President Thein Sein has at the last minute cancelled plans to attend the U.S.-ASEAN summit in California next week, giving no reasons for the decision. After two busy weeks after the NLD-dominated parliament opened on Feb.1, Myanmar's lawmakers are in for a quieter week from Monday, as they undergo induction and training organised by the parliament and international organizations supporting the development of democracy in Myanmar.

Taiwan building collapse death toll reaches 114 tAIPeI, FebruAry 13 (reuters): The death toll at a building that collapsed from a strong earthquake in southern Taiwan reached 114 as rescue efforts came to an end on Saturday, a week after the temblor hit. "The search and rescue has come to an end," said Tainan Mayor William Lai, in remarks carried live on local television, identifying the last individual to be pulled out from the rubble as Hsieh Chen-yu, who was part of the fallen building's management committee. All of those believed missing in the building have now been accounted for, city officials said. The 6.4-magnitude quake struck at early dawn on February 6 at the beginning of the Lunar New Year holiday, with almost all of the dead found in Tainan's toppled Wei-guan Golden Dragon Building. Two other people died elsewhere in the city. Rescue work has focused on the wreckage of the 17-storey building. The building had 256 reg-

istered residents but when more than that number were pulled out in the initial days after the quake, it became clear more people were in the building when it toppled. Of a total 289 people pulled out, 175 were alive with 96 of them taken to the hospital, Lai said. No survivors had been brought out since Monday evening, when more than 100 were still reported missing. The Wei-guan was the only major high-rise building in the city of two million people to have completely collapsed. Its lower storeys, filled with arcades of shops, pancaked on top of each other before the entire U-shaped complex toppled in on itself. Local authorities are investigating the reasons for the building's collapse and earlier this week took into custody three individuals, including the developer of the Wei-guan Golden Dragon Building, on suspicion of professional negligent homicide. No one has yet been formally charged.

LaVine shines as US beat World chris Morris magic helps in NBA Rising Stars Challenge south Africa level series

MONTREAl, FEBRUARy 13 (AFP): Minnesota forward Zach LaVine scored 30 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the United States to a 157-154 victory over the world team in the NBA's Rising Stars Challenge in Toronto. LaVine was named Most Valuable Player of the contest featuring many of the NBA's top rookies and second-year players, which launched the festivities of All-Star weekend. Sunday's All-Star Game will cap the action at Air Canada Centre, but before then LaVine will defend the title he won last year in Saturday's Slam Dunk contest. He limbered up for that event -- in which he'll hope to join Michael Jordan (1987-88), Jason Richardson (2002-03) and Nate Robinson (2009-10) as the only back-to-back winners -- by leading the squad of US-born rising stars against a World team featuring his Timberwolves teammate Andrew Wiggins of Canada, the Knicks' Latvian rookie Kristaps Porzingis, and the Denver Nuggets' Congolese guard Emmanuel Mudiay. Both Porzingis and Mudiay scored 30 points in the game played in 20-minute halves. Wiggins, last season's Rookie of the Year, added 29 points for the World -- to

the delight of the Canadian crowd. It was the second straight year that the contest featured a USA v World format, rather than the old first-year v second-year showdown. The talent and athleticism of the league's young players was on full display with a bevy of dunks, but there was little in the way of defense to be seen.

LaVine admitted that he wanted to take it to Timberwolves teammate Wiggins in front of the Canadian's home fans. But he was already looking ahead to his Dunk title defense. "I'm excited for tomorrow," LaVine said. "I'm going to try to put on a show." Wiggins, who was named MVP after leading the World to the Rising

Stars win in New York last year, said he didn't mind that LaVine earned MVP honors this time around. He was just happy to put on a show in Toronto. "It felt great," Wiggins said. "I got to play in front of a lot of people I haven't seen in a long time. My family and friends got to watch it. It's great being back home and playing for my hometown."

JOHANNESBURG, FEBRUARy 13 (REUTERS): A swashbuckling halfcentury by Chris Morris hauled South Africa back from the brink of defeat as they scraped past England by one wicket on Friday to level the one-day series at 2-2 with one match left. The all-rounder, batting at number eight, bludgeoned his way to 62 off 38 balls to help South Africa reach their target of 263 with 16 deliveries to spare after Joe Root had made his second successive century for the tourists. L e g -s p i n n e r Ad i l Rashid clean-bowled Morris with a googly with the scores level but number 11 Imran Tahir struck the next ball for four to the relief of a capacity crowd of 22,000. However, it could have been a different story for South Africa had Morris not been dropped by Rashid when he was on 14. "We have put in a lot of work on my batting so I'm really happy I can contribute," Morris told the presentation ceremony. "I'm very grateful to all the coaches that have thrown balls for me. "When (number seven) Dave Wiese got out I thought we were in strife. It was tense and luckily they dropped me." Earlier, Root made 109 as England were bowled

out for 262 in 47.5 overs. The Yorkshireman, who struck an ODI-best 125 in a losing cause in Pretoria on Tuesday, saved Eoin Morgan's side after they had slumped to 108 for six. Opener Alex Hales contributed 50 but it was a 95run partnership for the seventh wicket between Root and Chris Woakes (33) that helped England, who won the test series 2-1, post a defendable tally.

Rashid also chipped in with a quickfire 39 off 26 balls while paceman Kagiso Rabada took the last three wickets to finish with four for 45. Hashim Amla was clean bowled for a duck by the recalled Stuart Broad in South Africa's first over and the home team looked in trouble when captain AB de Villiers was run out for 36 by the quick-thinking Woakes.

South Africa were then left teetering on the brink on 210 for eight before Morris came to their rescue. "We were 30 or 40 runs short even though Joe Root was magnificent," said England captain Morgan. "It was our game to win at the end. The bowlers bowled out of their skin and the most disappointing thing is we had chances." The last game of the series is in Cape Town on Sunday.

In defence of my alma mater: ‘Anti-National Imlong Chang O.B.E. And His G.I. friends & Secessionist’ JNU student speaks out

“Y

Moa Jamir

ou are not leftist, just anti national elements. Admit your game is up, you are simply secessionist. All of you are caught here,” pronounced Arnab Goswami with an air of superiority to the panel of students from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) at the Times Now ‘Newshour Debate’ on February 10, damning and tagging us in one stroke as: anti-nationalist, secessionist, shallow, semiliterate et cetera. The mood of the self-appointed conscious keeper of the Nation was incensed by actions of a group of individuals who organised a cultural evening on 9 February 2016, entitled ‘A Country without a Post Office’ the protesting the “judicial killing of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat”. Since then, the controversy erupted into a full-fledged attack on everything that is JNU. Earlier, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) had condemned the event, both the “divisive slogans” as well as the way the entire incident is being used to malign JNU students. Police swooped down on the campus and arrested JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar, charging him with sedition. So far eight other students have been debarred from academic activities by JNU pending a disciplinary enquiry into the event. Home Minister Rajnath Singh and HRD Minister Smriti Irani asserted that strict action will be taken against the demonstrators and ‘anti-national’ elements will not be tolerated. Media was buzzing with notes on nationalism and ideas of “ideal students.” Social media had a field day; rightwing sympathizers launched their latest mission to disgrace JNU and #ShutDownJNU has been trending on top. “Terrorist and anti-nationalist” At the Newshour Debate, when the students (including a former JNUSU President and two others) rebutted the charges stating that their “principle stand” is against all forms of death penalty, Arnab thundered, “Forget your principle stand (on death penalty)” accusing them of providing “Wishy-wishy arguments.” They were not allowed to complete a sentence through the show. He accused them of wasting tax payer’s money. A similar sentiment implied by many commentators across the media. Obviously, beck-and-call, not conscientious students, are the ideal milieu in their academic curriculum. When the students cited growing instances of intolerance for dissent in academic institutions, taking recent Rohit Vemula episode in Hyderabad Central University as a case point, Goswami accused them of generalising the issue and making analogous reasoning. And then, he asked, “Would any American university allow a cultural event that celebrates the life of Osama Bin Laden and call him a hero?” Obviously he had forgotten to read about recurring civic unrest in college campuses

throughout the 1960s over African-American civil rights, women's liberation, and anti-Vietnam War movements. Democratic protest and dissent are part of campus culture. “Bunch of people consisting of out of work lawyer (Katju et al), champagne sipping and cocktail glitterati (Shobhaa De et al?), a five star has-been author (Arundhati Roy) with a single book agenda” and group of anti-national elements cannot dictate the nation, he implied. Toeing the line, an Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) member on February 11 updated his status, “#JNU4Nationalism march in JNU Campus today and it will continue till JNU become a nationalist institution...” JNU legacy As a young graduate, when I joined JNU in 2005, it was unlike any other university starting with the admission process, where instead of ragging, you are assisted by dedicated volunteers of different organisations on campus. You soon discover that there are huge gaps between various theories and praxis that we learn through our educational system. Our worldview opens up to different possibilities and is considerably enhanced. In essence, it teaches: That it is all right to question, debate and offer alternatives to grand narratives; that no single theory is applicable to all human circumstances. It enabled someone like me, from one of the remotest corners of India, to study here. Students from diverse backgrounds and socio-economic realities converge and mingle here adding vibrancy one would sorely miss in other universities. It made us cynical, conscientious, proactive, making our minds inquisitive. No thought-control here! Each entity, no matter their ideological proclivities, is given ample space to voice their concerns. It is the only place where you can be what you want to be. Those who do not have opportunity to study at the University would be certainly envious of its democratic and liberal atmosphere. Some are affronted by the questioning of existing narratives and the hierarchal status quo. The ABVP’s failure at JNU has made it raise the cudgel of ‘anti-nationalism’ to exact its revenge. Their brand of majoritarian politics based on belligerent jingoistic fervour and religious dogmatism does not hold water here. In an election year in many important states, it is sowing time for the right-wing ABVP. Closet supporters are coming out in throngs now that they know that “power that be” are in their side. The University is often accused of engendering ‘rebellious’ and radical interpretation of different issues and questioning of the mainstream narrative. But the very essence of the University is to enable such possibilities. A university that does not allow dissent is a prison, as argued by the student in the Newshour. If ABC...and 123 is the only fact of life we were to learn through education, we might as well have stopped our schooling at nursery level.

Defending democratic ethos Questioning the anti-nationalist tag, a JNU student’s Facebook status read, “As far as nationalism goes (and I certainly want it to end for good) that is the best form of responsibility a citizen can undertake. It has never been a question of the death of a soldier versus that of a farmer or a student. It is a question of policies and agendas of state machinery that while being responsible for killing them all, makes martyrs of some and invisibilizes others to further its interests.” Another former student updated, “A culture of healthy debates and engagement with dissent is any day a better usage of 'tax payer’s money' and goes in the long term interest of the republic in a real sense than suppression of debates and silencing of dissents in the name of nationalism...” Others talked about its academic achievement that produces best academicians, journalists, activists, civil servants, policy makers and many other playing key roles in the progress of the nation. Defending the democratic ethos of JNU, a large crowd of students along with the Jawaharlal Nehru University Teacher Association who hit the road on February 12 condemning the arrest of JNUSU president and the steps to malign the institution and declared, “No you were wrong, you try to bury us but you didn't know we were seeds.....” For all the arm-chair bandwagon bent on tagging JNU into varied disgraceful jargon without even setting foot or experiencing an iota of life in this magnificent institution, stay inside the campus for one week. ABVP members must be most willing to accommodate you. I assure you, by the end of your stay, you would change your position. Charges of wasting tax payer’s money are a joke fired as a last desperate salvo when all other attempt fails. The JNU legacy justifies it more than anything else. Away from the maddening crowd, life goes on, as reflected aptly by a Facebook update by a JNU researcher as the media goes ballistic over the incident: I’ll tell you what’s happening in JNU @ this very night: “Someone is waiting for the geyser water to heat up, Someone is on the phone, walking in the corridor, engaging in a heated argument, Someone is sharing cigarette puff with someone, someone is in Ganga Dhaba sipping lemon tea, Someone is in library, slogging for UPSC, someone is being kissed for the first time, Someone is bitching about his/her professor, someone is complaining about the hostel food, Someone is trying her roommate’s clothes in her absence, someone is fighting insomnia, Someone right wing guy is thinking about the left wing girl whom he has secret king size crush on, Someone knows that differences are healthy when some third person doesn’t interfere and blow it out of proportion.” -Hence, everything is fine, all is well with and in JNU Long Live JNU.

. I. (Abbreviation used for enlisted soldier in the United States of America Armed Forces, esp. the Army) During the Second World War several G. Is. were stationed in the following villages in Naga Hills, a small District of Assam State. They were stationed to observe the Japanese movement when they crossed the Burma border and entered Naga Hills attempting to capture Kohima, the seat of the British Administration. These G. Is. were stationed in Himpo Village, Helipong Village, Yaongyemti village and Mokokchung (my home town). The deadliest snipping duals and gruesome hand-to-hand combats were fought at this very location. The Cemetery is meticulously maintained by the Commonwealth War Grave Commission with its Headquarters in London, England. There is a memorial cross with the following inscription; “Here around the Tennis Court of the Deputy Commissioner, lie men who fought the Battle of Kohima in which they and their comrades finally halted the invasion of India by the Japanese in April 1944. Another memorial to the 2nd Division stands at the lower end of the cemetery as a gateway to the capital city of Kohima, a monolith stands with a cross at the top and bronze plaque that reads" "WHEN YOU GO HOME, TELL THEM OF US AND SAY FOR YOUR TOMORROW WE GIVE OUR TODAY.” In this battle, some 2484 soldiers died and for them has been raised the above mentioned Cemetery. There are 1421 Christian soldiers' graves laid in beautifully arranged plots. The identities of the soldiers are engraved on bronze plates. There is a list of 917 soldiers of other religions who were cremated and there are graves of 146 soldiers whose remains could not be identified. Some of the soldiers were only 15 years old. Our home known as the "Rosy Villa," the main floor of the home was used as a store — Rosy Villa was the meeting place of many friends and visitors from many parts of the world. Even now this custom prevails. Those young American soldiers often brought records to play in the old gramophone that my parents had. They would spent hours listening to records, reading life magazine, Illustrated Weekly of London, Newspapers, books, etc. and sipping fresh homemade lemonade on warm summer days or drinking hot fresh coffee or tea on winter afternoons. Whenever the planes dropped their regular rations, they would bring sacks of flour and sugar rations, and say to my mother, "Mrs. Imlong, your cake is the best in town, wouldn't you please bake some cake for us?" During Christmas time, my parents used to invite these new friends for Christmas Tea Party. How they enjoyed it! Those lonely youngmen far away from home on Christmas Day! They must have enjoyed it more than anyone can imagine, to be invited to a home full of fun, laughter and food. On long and warm summer afternoons the cooks used to visit the fish pond down by the big house without realizing that the fish pond was Imlong's private fish pond. They would sit there with fishing rods and buckets all day until it was time to return to the camp to prepare dinner. I am very sure the cooks

must have served delicious fresh fish. The pond is still there but slightly larger with more variety of fish than those GI friends would remember. One afternoon a couple of them brought a "new friend" who had just arrived from America. He was introduced as James, brother of Eric, the special friend of Imlong. They shook hands and were duly entertained according to Naga custom. However, they could hardly keep their faces straight; because, Imlong totally believed them without a moment of doubt. Finally they broke into hilarious laughter and disclosed the true identity of the "New Friend", he was no other than Mr. Eric who had shaven the heavy beard and looked lot younger. One special occasion my father often talked about was "the rescue team." It was on August 2, 1943, a plane load of American soldiers en route to Chungking on a special mission crash landed on "no man's land" between Naga Hills (a district of Assam State) and Myanmar (Burma) "The special cargo" included Second Secretary of the American Embassy in Chungking, William Scanton of the U.S. Office of Economic Warfare, John Davies, Second Secretary of the American Embassy in Chungking, Captain 'Duncan Lee, two Chinese Colonels and Eric Sevareid, who wrote an article about the plane crash under the title "OUR GOOD FRIENDS, THE HEAD HUNTERS" in the Reader's Digest. Imlong had arranged to send advance message of warning to the villager that the white people who landed in their territory were his friends and they must be protected, no harm must be done; anyone who disobeyed this order would be punished. He himself was or his way to rescue them. A relay team of runners were dispatched to his righthand-man, Sangba, who could speak the local language. Imlong also arranged to drop tons of salt by airplane as gifts to the natives as a sign of friendship and goodwill. Thus, Mr. P. F. Adams, S. D. 0., Mokokchung and Imlong marched with Assam Rifles for two weeks to rescue the American Officials. This was the first time Imlong and Eric Sevareid CBS Commentator, who was posted to Chungking as the war correspondent met and became friends. When I came to New York World's Fair in 1965 as Assistant Director of the India Pavilion, my father requested me to visit Eric Sevareid, so I went to visit him in Washington, D. C and took his picture to show to my father. The United states of America Govt. recognized Imlong's service by presenting him with the CBI (China Burma India) ribbon with a promise to present the actual medal later. However, the Japanese attack on the Allied Forces at the battle of Kohima brought an end to this promise. Imlong often remembered his G. I. friends, specially on Christmas Days. He used to entertained his grandchildren by singing "Imlong Chang, Imlong Chang from the Mokokchung" to the tune of "Jingle Bells" when they came to our house for Christmas Tea Party, they used to sing this song in unison, wowl it sounded so wonderful! She seeks to provide education to underprivileged kids here who are indisposed when it comes to having even a basic sense of learning because their parents are too poor to afford school fees and learning materials Akangchila Longchar

ou will never find children in Germany this excited to receive school uniforms,” Katrin remarked during a press conference held post ‘The Joy of Giving’concert. She was making a reference to how children could barely contain their happiness and joy when they received school uniforms bought through the first fundraiser. The concert held this month was the second such fundraiser organised by Katrin and a group of like-minded Naga people who want to create a difference in the lives of underprivileged children.

Nagaland is blessed to have social workers like Katrin who are not from here but have so much love and concern for its people. It all started four years back when Katrin travelled thousands of miles from Germany to Nagaland because she wanted to visit the place. She had enrolled in a training course to prepare herself to go abroad and to commit to work in a social organisation. She always had the desire to invest her life for the poor and underprivileged people. In the year 2011, for the first time in her life, she met a Naga person who

shared stories about Nagaland. Katrin said she was inspired and touched. She then started to pray for Nagaland. She found herself filled with thoughts of visiting Nagaland which grew stronger with each passing day. Finally, along with some other people who trained with her, Katrin took a short trip to Nagaland. As she narrates this story, Katrin says, “Immediately I knew that this was the right place and I fell in love with the people and country”. And fall in love she did! Katrin is now engaged to Akihito, with whom she started an open air café called “The Garden” in Super Market, Dimapur. The place is wellknown for its delicious food, friendly ambience and is considered a hotspot for musicians. But no matter what wonderful things were happening in Katrin’s life, it was her heart’s desire to help the poor and un-

derprivileged people. As she went about running the café, she saw children roaming around the neighbourhood during the day and even at night. These children also started loitering around the café. “Everyone knows that the Dimapur Super Market area is quite tough and not a good environment for children to grow up in a healthy manner. We saw the condition of the kids and we started visiting their homes, meeting the parents or relatives. Almost all the kids are Nagas, and are living in the second hand shops and bus stand. Many of the parents are running booze joints. I felt the passion to invest in the lives of the children. I want to build a good relationship with them, consider their needs and teach them simple things, like basic hygiene, manners, values etc. I want to let them experience the love of God as well,” she shares her vision. This was how ‘The Kids Garden’ program came to life. Katrin meets with the children from the neighbourhood twice every week, on Tuesday and Saturday. She is also helped by a family from Germany, Ben and Steffi, who are here in Nagaland along with their kids, and together with Katrin are influencing the lives of the children. But that alone is not enough, feels Katrin. She wants to give the children a proper chance in life and for their future, and to achieve this, she states, they need good education. This is where ‘The Joy of Giving’, a charity event to raise funds for the children’s school education comes in. She happily states that because of many generous people, 23 children are being enrolled

in a private school this year. Katrin’s support for the children does not stop here. Not wanting to take away the responsibilities of the parents of these children, she meets them regularly and encourages them to be more aware of their responsibilities towards their child’s future. Katrin says that she is most satisfied when she sees the children happy. "When I visit them at home, they will shout “Miss Katrin!” from afar. They are so happy and thankful to join The Kids Garden program and to go to school." She adds, “That moment when they are getting their uniforms and they are so happy and joyful about it. That moment when we give them food and we can see they are hungry, and happy to fill their stomachs. Food like meat, potatoes and vegetables are precious to them. If I can be part of the movement to make some lives more beautiful and

to see positive changes in the children's lives, then I'm the happiest person.” Katrin admits that to deal with poverty is challenging work. She explains, “It’s a very slow work! Sometimes I wish to see changes faster but I have

to be patient and it takes a lot of strength, endurance and effort to guide the children for a long time. And of course fundraising for the school expenses is challenging too, though there are many generous and supportive people in Nagaland.” Offering advice to

young Nagas interested to make a difference, she states, “If I love God, love myself and love others, I'll be eager to use my life to make a change and difference. But it's necessary to really live it in our daily lives and not use only nice words, by being active and practical. Hard work, love, accountability, reliability, endurance and taking up responsibilities are the key to changes and success.” “But wanting to make a difference is not enough”, Katrin states. She says that endurance is very important because it doesn't help to start something only to give up when it gets difficult. We have to face the challenges and go through it with patience and endurance. Katrin even admits that sometimes she finds herself lazy or not in the mood to work, but she reminds herself of the responsibility and commitment she has undertaken. And no doubt, Katrin finds life in Nagaland to be very different. She shares that she had to learn the culture and adapt to the lifestyle. I had my struggles, but so far, I’m having a great time. I'm enjoying my life in Nagaland. “I came with a calling to Nagaland, and when I see people being happy and getting support through my work, it inspires me and keeps me motivated,” says this humble lady who traveled all the way from Germany to share her love.

I'm 2-0 up in battle against cancer, says Cruyff

C M Y K

amSterDam, February 13 (reuterS): Dutch soccer great Johan Cruyff says he is "2-0 up in the first half" of his fight against lung cancer and confident of winning the battle. A former smoker who had heart surgery in 1991, the 68-year-old former Barcelona coach was diagnosed with cancer in October. "After several medical treatments I can say the results have been very positive, thanks to the excellent work of the doctors, the affection of the people and my positive mentality," triple Ballon d'Or winner Cruyff said in a statement. "Right now I have the feeling I am 2-0 up in the first half of a match that has not finished yet. But I am sure I will end up winning." Considered one of football's all-time greats, Cruyff helped Ajax Amsterdam win three European Cups from 1971-73 and was named European Footballer of the Year in 1971, 1973 and 1974. He joined Barcelona for a then-world record transfer fee of $2 million and it was the Catalan club that defined his coaching career as he helped them win their first La Liga title in 15 years in 1974. Cruyff famously wore the number 14 jersey throughout his sparkling playing career with Ajax, Barcelona, Feyenoord and the Dutch national team beaten by West Germany in the 1974 World Cup final.

Mourinho talks would be a blow, admits Van Gaal

lonDon, February 13 (aFP): Louis van Gaal says he would be upset if it is true that Manchester United have approached Jose Mourinho behind his back. United have refused to deny reports they have spoken to Mourinho in recent weeks following their team's slump and the former Chelsea boss is said to have made it clear he is ready to replace van Gaal if the Dutchman is sacked or departs at the end of the season. Van Gaal concedes it is plausible the club have made contact with Mourinho in secret, but he is hoping that is not the case. "Then I shall be disappointed (if contact has been made)," he said. "Because that is the consequence of what I have said. In a football world that is possible, I know, but I do not think that. "I have a relationship with (executive vice chairman) Ed (Woodward) and the Glazers, they (would) tell me I think."

Leicester will drop me if I don't track back – Mahrez

lonDon, February 13 (reuterS): Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri would have no qualms about dropping Riyad Mahrez if the playmaker did not augment his sublime attacking skills with equally good defensive work, the Algerian said on Saturday. Mahrez has become the first Premier League player to reach double figures in goals (14) and assists (10) as leaders Leicester, 5,000-1 outsiders at the start of the season, have staged an unlikely climb to the summit. The former Le Havre winger knows, however, that he cannot sit on his laurels as the club try to win the top-flight title for the first time in their history. "We are together, very compact," Mahrez told the BBC on the eve of Sunday's crunch match at third-placed Arsenal. "We do a lot of work defensively. Me, for example, if I don't work, I don't play. "Two times this year he (Ranieri) put me on the bench because I didn't defend. I know if I don't work for the team he will drop me," said Mahrez, one of the bargains of the season after joining Leicester for 400,000 pounds ($580,320).

Umpire Asad Rauf slams BCCI

iSlamabaD, February 13 (agenCieS): Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf slammed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday questioning what authority they had to ban him. “What authority does the BCCI or IPL have to ban me when the court in Mumbai told the police they had no evidence against me?” questioned Rauf, a day after the Indian board banned him for five years. Rauf was nominated as an ‘accused wanted’ by the Mumbai Police in the 2013 Indian Premier League (IPL) corruption probe. However, Rauf hit back at the BCCI saying that the case presented against him was flawed. The International Cricket Coucil (ICC) has earlier published a press release soon after the news emerged that Rauf was wanted by police for questioning. ICC stated in the press release that they had stopped Rauf from umpiring in the ICC Champions Trophy in England. Moreover, he was also dropped from the Elite Panel of Umpires but the ICC clarified that it was not because of the corruption scandal.

Suarez 'would only return to Liverpool'

lonDon, February 13 (aFP): Barcelona striker Luis Suarez would only return to the English Premier League if it was to rejoin former club Liverpool, he revealed in a British newspaper interview published on Saturday. "I'd prefer to stay here (Barcelona) for many more years," he told the Daily Mail. "I know it doesn't always turn out that way. But if I had to return to the Premier League, I would only go to Liverpool. "I wouldn't go to another team. It wouldn't be a move for money. I'd also love to play again for Ajax as they allowed me to develop as a player in Europe." Suarez, 29, scored 82 goals for Liverpool in a three-and-a-half-year spell and almost inspired the team to Premier League glory in 2014 before leaving for Barcelona. "In the Premier League you never really know what is going to happen," he said. "There is very little between the teams. Here, three or four teams aside, there is a difference with the smaller teams. "In the Premier League, you never know what is going to happen and that is something I miss."

Pollard, Narine pull out of World T20 St. John’S, February 13 (aP): Allrounder Kieron Pollard and offspinner Sunil Narine have withdrawn from the West Indies squad for the World Twenty20 starting next month in India. The West Indies Cricket Board says Pollard, who has been replaced in the 15man squad by Carlos Brathwaite, pulled out “citing a lack of sufficient progress in his rehabilitative work” following a knee injury sustained in December. Narine is currently banned from bowling after the International Cricket Council deemed in November that his action was illegal, because all variations of his deliveries exceeded the 15 degrees level of tolerance permitted under regulations. A replacement for Narine has not yet been named. The West Indies open the World T20 against England on March 16 in Mumbai, before further group games against Sri Lanka, South Africa and a qualifier.

Sunderland win dents Man Utd's top-four bid

SunDerlanD, February 13 (aP): A late own goal by goalkeeper David de Gea consigned Manchester United to a 2-1 loss at relegation-threatened Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday, dealing another blow to the team's ambitions of finishing in the Champions League qualification places. Anthony Martial, who had equalized for United, cleared a header from Lamine Kone off the goal line but the ball ricocheted off De Gea's back and went into the net in the 82nd minute. Wahbi Khazri put Sunderland ahead in the third minute when his curling free kick eluded everyone in the penalty area and bounced into the net. Martial made it 1-1 with a closerange finish in the 39th. United's first ever loss at the Stadium of Light piles the pressure on its manager Louis van Gaal, whose team is fifth - six points off the top four having played a game more. ''It will be very difficult now,'' Van Gaal said of United's chances of qualifying for the Champions League

through its league placing. ''It's too much at this time. ''I think after this match, (winning the Europa League) is the best route but that's not so easy. There are many very good teams participating in this event.'' Asked about his own future, the Dutchman said: ''I have to do my work and I do my work to my utmost best

and I cannot do more.'' His team had 66 percent of the possession but managed only half as many shots as a Sunderland side that remains in the drop zone. United, which - with 41 points - has its lowest points haul in a Premier League campaign after 26 games, was outplayed and outfought in the second half

after coming back into the game late in the first half. ''I think Sunderland had more aggression than us and we could not cope with that aggression,'' Van Gaal said. We don't keep the ball too much in our possession.'' Van Gaal, who has spent $375 million in his 1 1/2-year tenure, finished the game with 21-year-old Premier

League debutant Donald Love and striker Will Keane - making his second Premier League appearance and first since the 2010-11 season - in the team. ScoRES:

Bradman-esque Voges puts Australia in command

Wellington, February 13 (aFP): Adam Voges boosted his Test average to more than 100 on Saturday as he and Usman Khawaja scored centuries to set Australia up for a huge lead in the first Test against New Zealand. Australia were 463-6, heading New Zealand by 280 on the first innings at stumps on the second day. Khawaja was out for a classic 140 and Voges, given a life on seven, was unbeaten on 176. The 36-year-old Voges, in his 19th Test innings, saw his Test average rise to more than 100, bettering Don Bradman's 99.94 from an 80-innings career. Voges has scored centuries in his last three innings, posting 269 runs not out and an unbeaten 106 against the West Indies in December. The combined total of 551 overtakes the previous record of 497 runs between dismissals held by Sachin Tendulkar. For his part, since his recall to the Australian side last year Khawaja has averaged 128.80 from six innings which include four centuries. The single highlight of the day was a stunning caught and bowled by Trent Boult to dismiss Mitchell Marsh, but that occupied a split

second on a day where the bat otherwise dominated. Voges and Khawaja's firm grip on the game in a 168-run stand for the fourth wicket left New Zealand with few moments to relish on a day of toil under the baking sun. It was a sublime partnership that lasted 50 overs and offered few chances. Moment of luck BJ Watling missed a stumping

opportunity when Khawaja was on 34 and Mark Craig was confident with an lbw appeal that was turned down when Khawaja was on 104. A review showed the ball would have grazed the outside of leg stump and the umpire's original not out decision remained. Voges had his moment of luck in the last over on day one when he was bowled by Doug Bracewell, only for umpire Richard Illing-

worth to wrongly call the delivery a no ball. Since then, Voges has added 169 runs in an innings that has lasted 286 deliveries and includes 26 boundaries. Boult hinted a fightback for New Zealand was possible with two wickets in three balls during the middle session on Saturday to remove Khawaja and Marsh and have Australia 299-5. But the euphoria in the New Zealand camp quickly disappeared as they laboured through another 27 overs and 96 runs before Peter Nevill was the next wicket to fall. Boult outsmarted Khawaja by bowling wide of the crease and as the left-handed batsman shaped to turn the ball to the onside it straightened and slammed into the back pad. Marsh was out to a spectacular catch off the second ball he faced when he drove hard at a Boult delivery, and the left-arm paceman flung himself high to his right to snare the ball in his right hand. Boult's reaction time was measured at 0.594 of a second. Australia had resumed the day on 147-3 and added 91, 92 and 133 in each of the three sessions on a flattening pitch.

Ronaldo scores twice to lead Madrid win over Bilbao barCelona, February 13 (aP): Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals to lead Real Madrid to a 4-2 win over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, provisionally lifting it into second place in the Spanish league. Ronaldo opened the scoring in the third minute before Javier Eraso quickly leveled for the Basques in an attractive, back-and-forth first half at the Santiago Bernabeu that finished with James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos giving Madrid a 3-1 lead at halftime. Madrid lost Raphael Varane, whose error led to Eraso's goal, to a second booking in the 83rd. Despite being a man down, Ronaldo found the net again in the 87th to move past Barcelona's Luis Suarez as the competition's leading scorer with 21 goals this season. Indian shooters grabbed all the six gold on offer while triathlon players joined the party by winning both the gold and two silver as the hosts swept aside the challenge from other countries. India stood atop with 268 medals (156 gold, 85 silver and 27 bronze), way ahead of second placed Sri Lanka 163 (25, 55, 83). Pakistan were at third with 81 medals (9, 27, 45).
