Nagaland State Chief Minister TR Zeliang expressed “strong conviction” that the “most feasible” road and rail connectivity with Southeast Asian countries would be through Nagaland. The PWC delegation is scheduled to return to Nagaland on Sunday.

Court issues arrest warrant for Musharraf

C M Y K

islamabaD, February 20 (iaNs): A court in Pakistan on Saturday issued a non-bailable warrant for the arrest of former President Pervez Musharraf in a case of the murder of a cleric, lawyers said. Abdul Rashid Ghazi was among 90 students who were killed in a military raid on Islamabad’s Red Mosque in 2007. At least 11 security men were also killed in the clashes. The operation was launched to nab armed militants holed up inside the mosque and a nearby girls’ seminary. Additional Sessions Judge in Islamabad, Pervez Qadir, dismissed an application of Pervez Musharraf for exemption from personal appearance in the court on medical grounds, and ordered his arrest and production in the court on March 16.

After four years, the Government High School Diki, Dihoma under Kohima District has received news that six teachers along with a Headmaster will be arriving soon for their upgraded school. For almost four years, GHS Diki held its classes for the Class 9 students in their School Hall while the computer room was a makeshift room for the Class 10 students. Class 10 was discontinued in 2015 because even after its up-gradation by the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) in 2011, not a single teacher was deployed neither were the constructions begun for the classrooms until late last year. The school is still under construction. “We had to close down Class 10 because there was acute shortage of teachers,” says Thepfuneilhou Yashü, the former Head Teacher of the Government Middle School while mentioning that the school received directions from the RMSA to start classes right after the upgradation.Theteachersinthe Middle school had to manage and multi-task classes to teach Class 9 and 10. In Nagaland, after the introduction of RMSA, 168 schools were “upgraded” under the flagship program starting from 2009 till 2014. From 2009-2010, 35 schools were upgraded under the RMSA scheme, in 2010-2011, 67 schools were upgraded while in

2011-2012, 45 schools were upgraded and finally 21 schools in 2013-2014, informed Nagaland State’s RMSA Mission Director Thejao Vihienuo. However, the appealing figures are far removed from the pitiable state of many upgraded schools which struggled with no teachers deployed for the upgraded classes or constructions for additional rooms. It is only this year that the RMSA has started deploying teachers along with Headmasters. On being asked if the school appealed to RMSA on their problems, Yashü stated that verbal appeals were made. Reasons given for the non-deployment and delayed constructions were financial crisis in the Government and the Centre’s direction of selecting

ground, boundary walls, furniture etc. The Government High School, Mezoma was set up in 2012 after much discussions and debate in the village which finally decided to upgrade under the RMSA scheme so that the poorer students can benefit from the government school. The High School was officially inaugurated with a foundation stone by the Mission Director of RMSA on February 7, 2012. But no teachers were deployed thus compelling the Village Education Council to hire two private tutors for two years paying them Rs. 6000 each per month, informed K. Kuotsu, Chairman VEC of Mezoma village. The salaries of the two teachers were derived from the VDB’s grant-inaid fund. To add humour

teachers with a minimum requirement of 45 percentage in their graduation, which Yashü asserts is a difficult percentage to achieve in backward areas. In the case of Phokhungri Government High School, Phokhungri under Phek district, a Carpenter Instructor (who is a graduate) was compelled to teach English for Class 9 and 10 because no teachers were deployed. The School, established in 1971 and upgraded and inaugurated on October 18, 2011, has been functioning with only 13 teachers (only 3 graduate teachers) and further had to employ a private tutor for teaching Maths and Science, informed an official source. At present the school has a total enrolment of 128 students. No constructions for

the upgraded schools were made, however the school have been informed that constructions will start this year, informs the source. Despite its limitations, the school thrived and this year, out of its eight students in class 10, five of them are appearing for their matriculation exams. The school too will be receiving five teachers under the RMSA and Headmaster for the upgraded classes this year. In the RMSA framework guidelines, funds for constructions are sanctioned for provision of classrooms (at least two sections each for a class), science laboratory, lab equipments, office room, headmaster/principal room, library, girls activity room, computer room, arts and craft culture, toilet and drinking water facilities, development of play-

to the misery of the School, the Drawing Teacher in the middle school was compelled to teach the Class 9 students Science subject due to the teacher shortage since the teacher came from a B.Sc background. The land for the upgraded school was also purchased in the village but no constructions have started except for some levelling and constructing the road towards the school. The sand that has been kept for almost two years is also of poor quality. There has been no response from the contractor in charge of the construction despite appeals, informs the VEC Chairman. The upgraded classes are likely to be discontinued unless teachers are deployed; meanwhile most of the Class 9 and 10 students have to migrate to Zubza to pursue

their secondary studies. The Government High School at Sechü-Zubza does not have hostel facilities. Thus, students from other villages including Mezoma have to rent houses alone to pursue their studies. One of the main visions of RMSA is to make available, accessible and affordable quality education in secondary schools within a radius of 5 km of any habitation. The vision also ensured to achieve universal access to secondary education (age 14 to 18) by 2017. The distance from Mezoma to Sechü Zubza is 19.5 km, thus the accessibility of secondary school within a radius of 5 km, is a distant dream for the lofty vision of RMSA. “Instead of progressing, our schools are regressing,” states a frustrated teacher at Mezoma.

BJP ‘systematically destroying’ democratic institutions: nPcc Kohima, February 20 (mexN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has stated that the JNU issue is a “premeditated program” of the RSS and BJP to shut down the institution. “They are systematically destroying the democratic institutions,” stated President of NPCC, K Therie in a press release, listing the attack by the RSS on educational institutions such as FTII, TERI and students like Rohit Vemula. He also alleged that they BJP’s ministers are advocating the Gita to be declared as the ‘National Holy Book.’ “The growing of BJP is dangerous to the nation and especially to the minority communities like us,” the NPCC President reiterated. “The RSS Chief is saying that the Tri-colour National Flag is not required and should be replaced by saffron colour. Should we support such a move? Should we allow to happen or stand together to stop from happening?” he wondered while condemning the attitude of the BJP Government for “systematically destroying the democratic institutions.” of the prestigious University. JNU, they asserted, “epitomizes” unity in diversity. “It is a space of inclusiveness where different ideas are discussed and debated and often questions received knowledge and ideas that may be uncomfortable.” While every individual, group or party has the fundamental right to freedom of expression, the alumni questioned the wisdom of the members of the BJP, Nagaland unit, in holding a protest rally (and the proposed upcoming campaign) to tarnish JNU and its intellectual, progressive and democratic ethos that have been built over the decades. “We also question the wisdom of office bearers of the Nagaland unit, when the State at the Centre endorses the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, curb the right to food habits, religious freedom, cuts on education

funds, aims to establish a homogeneous idea of nation based on Hindutva ideology,” affirmed the concerned citizens. They further maintained that they do not endorse the aforementioned slogans and condemned the “propaganda of slander to defame JNU, the use of physical force, and the curbs on freedom of expression, the disregard for rule of law within and beyond the JNU campus.” The citizens, who resolved to stand by affirmative policies for the upliftment of the weak and poor sections of society, minority rights, justice, democracy and freedom of expression under the provisions of the Constitution, appealed to the local media to ascertain facts before publication to avoid undue defamation of the institution and aggravating the situation, also holding it true for coverage and reporting on other issues.

According to various surveys and reports, 10-15 percent of total waste generated by hospitals is infectious and needs treatment. The rest falls under the category of general waste which does not need any treatment. However, if all the waste

is mixed, the entire waste generated from a hospital becomes infected. As the quantity of waste to be treated increases, the hospital fails to treat all its waste and a large chunk of the infectious waste reaches municipal dumps, and increases the possibility of spreading infection, he added. After the workshop, the students were given demonstration on various activities and programmes

undertaken by the office. The students were given hindsight on the monitoring of air and water quality. They were also given a practical demonstration on paper recycling and its reuse. Tuki blames RSS, BJP for his govt’s dismissal NEW DELHI, FEbruary 20 (PTI): Former Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Nabam Tuki today blamed RSS and BJP for the dismissal of his government, alleging that their aim is to topple all Congress governments in the Northeast. Tuki, whose Congress government was dismissed by imposition of President's Rule on January 26 after 21 party legislators revolted against him, also alleged that Governor JP Rajkhowa and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju worked "to overthrow his democratically elected popular government". "The whole dissidence was funded and controlled by RSS and BJP. They just want to topple all Congress governments in the Northeast. RSS and BJP were firing through the shoulders of Congress dissident MLAs," he said at a press conference in New Delhi. Tuki's statement came a day after leader of the Congress rebels, Kalikho Pul, was sworn-in as Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh following withdrawal of President's Rule. The former chief minister, flanked by 26 legislators loyal to him, said whenever the NDA came to power, the governments in Arunachal Pradesh were destabilised -- be it in the time of (former chief ministers) Gegong Apang or be it during Mukut Mithi. Tuki claimed every effort was made by Governor Rajkhowa "to trample on democracy and defy the

Committed to provide stability: New Arunachal CM ITaNagar, FEbruary 20 (IaNS): "We are committed to providing stability," said new Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Kalikho Pul after a combined Congress-BJP government was sworn in late on Friday following 24 days of president's rule. "We are committed to providing stability and working for the overall development of Arunachal Pradesh with utmost sincerity," Pul told IANS after being sworn in as the ninth chief minister. Governor J.P. Rajkhowa administered the oath of office and secrecy to the 47-year-old Pul at a ceremony at the Raj Bhavan, marking the historic coalition government involving the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP, which has 11 members in the 60-member House Arunachal assembly, is extending outside support to Pul. Two Independent legislators are also supporting the 19 rebel Congress legislators. But sources close to the rebel Congress camp claimed that nine Tuki's loyalists are also set to shift their allegiance to Pul. While former chief minister Mukut Mithi, also a Rajya Sabha member from Arunachal, was present in the ceremony, Nabam Tuki and his loyalists Constitution" to remove the Congress government. "There was no reason to dismiss my government. There was no law and order problem, there was no internal disturbance. Still, President's Rule was imposed undemocratically and unconstitutionally," he said. The Congress leader accused Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju of supporting and instigating rebel legislators against his (Tuki's) leadership. Demanding removal of Rajkhowa as Gover-

skipped the event. However, Congress general secretary in-charge V. Narayanasamy described the formation of the new government as "highly illegal" and "unconstitutional" since Pul had not been elected as leader of the Congress Legislature Party. "The Congress cannot take the support of the BJP in forming a government. We don't subscribe to the BJP's ideology and therefore, the new government cannot be a Congress government," the veteran Congress leader told IANS. However, Pasang Dorjee Sona, one of the 19 rebel Congress legislators, held Narayanasamy responsible for the political mess in the state. "It was Congress leader Narayanasamy, in-charge of party affairs in the state, who is responsible for the political mess in the state. He never allowed us to meet and share our grievances with Congress president and vice-president," Pasang told IANS. "We have to work with the BJP in the interest of the people of the state and governance has nothing to do with political ideology. Good governance and the development of the state come first," Pasang said.

nor, former Congress lawmaker Takam Sanjay said democracy and Constitution "were murdered in Arunachal Pradesh and this may lead to serious law and order problems in the sensitive border state". "Modi ji, please stop treating us as second class citizen. We are as much Indian as anyone else. Don't turn Arunachal Pradesh as another Jammu and Kashmir," he said. Congress has governments in Manipur, Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram in

the Northeast. A revolt by Congress rebels led by Pul led to a political crisis in Arunachal Pradesh that finally led to imposition of President's Rule on January 26. Tuki has the support of 26 legislators in the 60-member Assembly. Congress, which had 47 legislators in the 60-member Assembly, suffered a jolt when 21 of its lawmakers revolted against Tuki's leadership. Eleven BJP legislators and two independents

backed the rebels in the bid to upstage the government. Later, 14 rebel Congress legislators were disqualified by the Speaker. The Supreme Court was considering pleas against imposition of President's Rule in Arunachal Pradesh and also hearing petitions seeking examination of constitutional schemes on the scope of discretionary powers of the Governor. After Union Cabinet's recommendation for withdrawal of President's Rule, Congress moved the Supreme Court and got an order for maintenance of status quo in the crisis-ridden state till it examined judicial and Assembly records on disqualification of 14 rebel Congress legislators by former Speaker Nabam Rebia. However, on Thursday, the Supreme Court virtually paved the way for government formation in Arunachal Pradesh by vacating its order on maintaining status quo, after being satisfied with the Gauhati High Court order staying the disqualification of the 14 rebel Congress legislators. Congress again moved the Supreme Court yesterday but the court rejected its plea for an interim direction that it be allowed to go in for a floor test in the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly to prove majority. Pul was sworn-in as Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh last night following withdrawal of President's Rule.

Christine Lagarde Maserati reveals images of upcoming Levante SUV appointed as iMF chief

Washington, February 20 (Pti): Christine Lagarde, who steered the IMF through some troubled times including the Eupropean financial crisis, has been re-appointed as its Managing Director for a second fiveyear term after an uncontested election. The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Friday selected 60-year-old Lagarde to serve as IMF Managing Director for a second five-year term starting on July 5, 2016, IMF said in a statement.

The Board’s decision was taken by consensus. France’s former finance minister secured early backing from many of the fund’s most powerful members when the IMF’s executive board launched the selection process in January, keeping other contenders from making an alternate bid and ensuring her a second term. Ms. Lagarde took the IMF’s top spot in mid2011 after its former managing director Dominique Strauss-Kahn was arrested in New York under rape

neW Delhi, February 20 (nDtV auto): Ahead of the 2016 Geneva International Motor Show, Italian car brand Maserati has revealed images of its upcoming Levante SUV. This is a first for the company as never in its 100 years of existence has the luxury marque, known for its sports cars, manufactured an SUV. The Levante will join the Ghibli, Quattroporte, GranTurismo and GranCabrio in Maserati's European portfolio by spring, followed by its introduction to the rest of the world. Despite being an SUV rather than a tarmac-hugging sports car, the Maserati Levante doesn't look out of place whatsoever in the Italian carmakers line-up. The aggressively designed front fascia features a large grille flanked on either sides by slender head-lamp units, which sit in line with the grille's chrome finish upper lip. The circular fog lamps sit right below the head-lamps. The grille itself features spaced out vertical chrome lines bang in the middle of which proudly sits Maserati's famous Trident logo. The side profile bears Maserati's signature 3 part air vents on the front wings as well as the famous oval 'Saetta' logo on its trapezoidal C-pillar. The tapered rear end gives the

allegations, charges that were later dropped. Lagarde tamed the fund’s internal turmoil and then helped temper Europe’s raging debt crisis by pressing Europe into recapitalising its rotting banking sector. Before her appointment at the IMF in 2011, Ms. Lagarde had an extensive and noteworthy career as an anti-trust and labour lawyer. She served as partner with the international law firm of Baker & McKenzie where she became Chairman of the Global Executive Committee in 1999, and subsequently Chairman of the Global Strategic Committee in 2004. She held the top post at the firm until June 2005 when she was named to her initial ministerial post in France. Lagarde has degrees from the Institute of Political Studies (IEP) and from the Law School of Paris X University, where she also lectured prior to joining Baker & McKenzie in 1981. When appointed in 2011, Lagarde became the first woman named to the top IMF post since the institution’s inception in 1944.

car a sporty look typical of a performance SUV. Unlike other Maserati's that are engineered to be sports cars, the Levante offers high performance drive dynamics with the added bonus of great off-roading abilities. The car comes equipped with sophisticated electronic suspension with controlled damping and adjustable air springs, Q4 Intelligent AWD system, and an 8-speed autobox

Jaguar F-Pace and the popular Porsche Cayenne. The car will be manufactured at Maserati's famed Mirafiori plant in Turin.

The first cars have already come of the assembly line in anticipation of its spring-2016 launch period in Europe.

NAGALAND

NVcO highlights impact of RTi in Nagaland KohiMa, February 20 (MexN): The Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organization (NVCO) today informed that it has been doing a study on the use of RTI across the State to find out its impact in Nagaland for the last ten years. In the course of the study, the organization detected both positive and negative impact of RTI, said a press release from Press & Medial Cell, NVCO. Citing an instance of positive impact, NVCO narrated that a young woman had been rejected for a job (through written and oral interview) by a particular State government depart-

ment. However, when she filed an RTI, the performance records showed that her written examination marks alone was more than the marks secured by the selected candidate in both written and interview. It was also discovered that the interview board had marked her as ‘absent’ on the interview day. Following this, the selected/ appointed candidate was terminated and the young woman was appointed to the said post. On the other hand, NVCO also came across number of cases on misuse of the RTI Act such as “using for personal gain,

harassing the public authorities, threatening, filing just to negotiate with some financial benefits, taking money and withdraw the RTI application, the public authorities bribing the applicants and attempting to bribe the applicants, etc.” Meanwhile, NVCO pointed out that awareness on RTI is still low in Nagaland. “Lack of transparency and accountability encourages the government officials to indulge in lower investments due to misuse or diversion of funds for private purposes,” it stated. In this regard, it added, RTI Act can be used as the best weapon

which can reduce corruption to a great deal. It was also informed that NVCO conducted interview with KC Angami, during whose tenure as president, the Nagaland Govt. Registered Class-1 Contractors’ Union (NGRC-1 CU) filed the first five RTI cases before Nagaland Information Commission (NIC). Angami maintained that RTI Act is also helping in checking the contracts for infrastructural development, especially in tendering process and manipulation of rates. “This law is good for honest citizens but may not be convenient

for unscrupulous citizens,” NVCO quoted Angami as saying. “The union is constantly filing RTI application and even in the recent time we received documents where a lot of violation of ethics of technicality was detected including financial irregularity and also wrongly kept project/ public funds meant for payment in civil deposit (CD),” Angami added. “The union is still working on it and the union would continue to promote transparency in the profession especially in the tendering process by using the RTI law as the best weapon to fight for

fairness and reasonability so as to ensure good quality of work in public infrastructural works be roads or buildings, etc.” In the press release, NVCO mentioned that Nagaland Information Commission celebrates its 10th anniversary on March 3, 2016. The Commission was constituted on March 14, 2006 with Talitemjen Ao, retired Chief Secretary to the Govt. of Nagaland as the first State Chief Information Commissioner along with Rev. Dr. W. Pongsing Konyak and Dr. Kuhoi K. Zhimomi as State Information Commissioners, it added.

What Are 'Sensory Issues'? Terri Mauro Children With Special Needs Expert

"S

ensory issues" is a term that's often used with a child has some behaviors associated with sensory processing disorder as a subset of another diagnosis. Their severe overreactions or under-reactions to touch, taste, smell, sight, sound, balance, and body position may or may not rise to a level that would get them a diagnosis of sensory processing disorder, but in the context

of their other disability it is noticeable, disruptive, and generally addressed with similar therapeutic solutions. Children with autism in particular maybe said to have sensory issues, but it can be a factor in many neurological, developmental, and behavioral disorders. To a wider degree, it might be said that all of us have some sort of sensory issues. Getting in touch with your own can help you understand why kids with sensory processing disorder reacts to things

CHEMISTRY

the way they do. Think of things that make you uncomfortable — the feel of wool, maybe, or the texture of certain foods, discomfort with heights or close spaces, inability to work around certain perfumes or flickering lights or squeaky noises that other folks seem perfectly able to overlook. Noticing how you work around your sensory issues can help you teach your child how to identify and strategize solutions as he or she gets older and more capable of self-advocacy.

Make festive yarn balls with our simple instructions to add some flash to parties or your home décor. By Shelly Reese MaTerIals

Balloons Plastic bags or a dropcloth to cover the floor Cooking spray School glue 1/2 cup cornstarch 1/4 cup hot water Scissors Yarn A mixing bowl

Instructions 1. Blow up balloons to different sizes (filling balloons only halfway will help you achieve a more spherical shape) and knot each balloon 2. Create a drying area (If you’re working outdoors or in the garage, hang up a clothesline. If you’re working indoors, suspend a string between two chairs. Be sure to put a dropcloth or plastic bags under the drying area to catch any drips.) 3. Hang balloons from strings above the drying area

4. Spray balloons with cooking spray (to make removing the yarn easier later) 5. In the bowl, mix hot water with cornstarch 6. Add a bottle of white school glue and mix thoroughly 7. Dip yarn into the glue mixture and gently squeeze out the excess with your fingers — you may want to wear rubber gloves. 8. Beginning at the knot-end of your balloon, wrap your balloon with the wet yarn. The more

Dot to dot

you wrap, the denser the ball will be 9. Wrap in all directions, top to bottom and side to side 10. When you’re satisfied with the wrapping, cut the string. 11. Repeat the process with the remaining balloons 12. Allow the balloons to dry completely. This may take about 24 hours. The yarn should be stiff and dry 13. Pop the balloon. Try very gently kneading the balloon before pop-

ping it to separate it from the yarn. Remove the popped balloon Tip: If the ball collapses a little, inflate a new balloon inside the ball to gently push the collapsed spot back into place, and then remove the balloon. Décor Tips • Because you can use any color yarn for this project, yarn ball decorations are suitable for almost any occasion. • Throwing a baby shower? Hang pink and blue balls above the table

for a sweet chandelier. • Need decorating ideas for an outdoor wedding? String white lights through the balls or put flameless lights inside and hang them in the trees! • Use orange and black balls for a Halloween centerpiece • Want an elegant holiday garland for your mantel? Use metallic silver and gold yarn for an offbeat alternative to the usual greenery. • Yarn balls make great ornaments for the tree as well.

FACTS

Read some fun chemistry facts for kids and find out more about atoms, elements, gases, liquids, solids, experiments, cool chemicals and much more. • Hydrogen is the first element on the periodic table. It has an atomic number of 1. It is highly flammable and is the most common element found in our universe. • Liquid nitrogen boils at 77 kelvin (-196 °C, -321 °F). • Around 1% of the sun’s mass is oxygen. • Helium is lighter than the air around us so it floats, that's why it is perfect for the balloons you get at parties. • Carbon comes in a number of different forms (allotropes), these include diamond, graphite and impure forms such as coal. • Under normal conditions, oil and water do not mix. More oil facts. • Although it is still debated, it is largely recognized that the word 'chemistry' comes from an Egyptian word meaning 'earth'. • The use of various forms of chemistry is believed to go back as long ago as the Ancient Egyptians. By 1000 BC civilizations were using more complex forms of chemistry such as using plants for medicine, extracting metal from ores, fermenting wine and making cosmetics. • Things invisible to the human eye can often be seen under UV light, which comes in handy for both scientists and detectives. • Humans breathe out carbon dioxide (CO2). Using energy from sunlight, plants convert carbon dioxide into food during a process called photosynthesis. • Chemical reactions occur all the time, including through everyday activities such as cooking. Try adding an acid such as vinegar to a base such as baking soda and see what happens! • Often formed under intense pressure over time, a crystal is made up of molecules or atoms that are repeated in a three dimensional repeating pattern. Quartz is a well known example of a crystal. • Athletes at the Olympic Games have to be careful how much coffee they drink. The caffeine in coffee is a banned substance because it can enhance performance. One or two cups are fine but they can go over the limit with more than five. (update - as of 2004 caffeine has been taken back off the WADA banned list but its use will be closely monitored to prevent future abuse by athletes.)

The Cunning Fox and the Clever Stork

O

nce upon a time, there lived a very cunning fox who always wanted to cheat and deceive others with its awful and stupid acts. The fox used to deceive others with its sneaky mind. He used to speak to other animals sweetly to make him trustworthy. One day he tried to cheat and have fun with a stork. He befriended the stork and gained the trust. The fox acted like a very good friend and cared a lot for the stork. One day, he invited the stork to have a feast with him and he wanted to treat his friend with delicious food. The happy stork accepted the invitation. The fox promised to offer rich and tasty food for the stork. Considering the delicious dinner proposed by the fox, the stork remained hungry for the whole day. Fox took the stork to his home. He apologized to the stork that he could not make anything due to his illness and offered some soup. The stork al-

though disappointed, cared for the fox and was happy with the soup. The cunning fox offered the soup in a shallow bowl. The stork was stunned to have the soup in the shallow bowl! The

long bill of the stork prevented it to take the soup. As the fox easily licked the soup from the plate, the stork wasn’t able to even taste a bit of the soup. It just touched the soup with the tip of its bill.

The Fox asked the stork, ‘How is the soup? Don’t you like it?’ The Hungry stork replied, ‘Oh it is good, but I have stomach upset and I can’t take anymore soup!’ 'I’m sorry for troubling

you', said the fox. The stork replied, ‘Oh dear, please don’t say sorry. I have some health problem and cannot enjoy what you offer. Please take care of your health.’ She left the place

thanking the fox! However, the stork understood that it was cheated by the fox and decided to teach him a lesson. After a few days, the fox met the stork again and decided to play another prank on the stork. This time it was the stork’s turn. The stork welcomed the fox happily and invited to pay a return visit to have a dinner. The fox was happy and they decided on a date to have the dinner. The Stork asked the fox’s favourite food and offered to cook the same for the dinner. The day arrived and the fox reached the stork’s place. The stork served soup to the fox and asked him to have soup first. The soup was served in a narrow jar with a longneck. The stork was able to drink the soup very easily with its long bill, however the fox couldn’t. The stork asked the fox to enjoy the soup. And showed several delicious dishes in long-necked jars. The disappointed fox said, ‘My stomach is very painful. I’m leaving now’ and left the place running.

For child art prodigy Akiane, Jesus is for real Faith demands obedience

er atheist parents were surprised when their three-year-old began to describe dreams and visions from God. This inexplicable direction in their daughter’s life, combined with a remarkable talent in art and poetry, inspired her family to re-examine their own lives. “My life began in an unusual way,” says Akiane Kramarik, 17, who spent her early years in rural Illinois. By unusual, she refers to her underwater birth in “a shack” on the edge of a cornfield. “Our family had no money, no friends, no relatives, no television or radio. Our life was quite simple — long walks in nature, open conversations, and hands on explorations of knowledge,” she says. Her mother, Forelli, is a Lithuanian immigrant educator. Akiane’s father, Mark, is a chef from Chicago with a Catholic background. In her early family life, there was no prayer, no discussions of God, and no visits to church. Yet in the insular atheistic environment her parents created – free from media influences or even outside babysitters – Akiane suddenly began to talk about God. She spoke of colorful dreams and visions about heaven, Jesus, and God’s amazing love. Her stunned parents realized her intense focus on God could not have been inspired by anything in the world they created for her. Indeed, Akiane seemed to be having supernatural encounters with the living God. “Most of my spiritual experiences I kept secret, so as not to overwhelm my parents,” she says. At a tender age, God implanted the desire to articulate her divinely-inspired dreams and visions into art. “When I was four years old, suddenly I started experiencing vivid impressions about different dimensions and a great desire to express them through art,” she says. Initially, she utilized whatever medium was on hand: candles, lipstick, fruits, vegetables, charcoal or pencils. At eight-years-old, Akiane decided she wanted to paint the face of Jesus, based on the visions she received. She looked for a person she might use as an artist’s model for a long time, and finally told her family they should pray for God to send someone. On the day they prayed, a mysterious carpenter

ho has the key to your heart? There are many who would say, "I have the key to your heart. I want to come in." If we allow that, we could entertain wrong thoughts and actions. God wants to be the sole owner of the key to our hearts. Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits at God's right hand in the place of honor and power. Let heaven fill your thoughts. Do not think only about things down here on earth. For you died when Christ died, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. And when Christ, who is your real life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory (Colossians 3:1-4). How wonderful that is to know! When He has the key to our hearts, we are giving Him the place of honor and power. We then begin to allow Him, and no one

“I

f our heavenly Father is rich in mercy, grace and love, then our children should see that in us as their parents.” As I was putting two of our sons to sleep, I was praying with our 3-year-old on his little toddler bed. He hasn’t yet learned to close his eyes while we pray, and I can feel his intense gaze looking up at me when I pray over him each night. As I bowed my head, a hollering little voice came from the crib on the other side of the room: “PRAY! PRAY! PRAY!” My other son was so impatient and worried that I would forget him. I could hardly stumble through my prayer with his older brother. As I heard those earnest cries, tears welled up. That night I realized at new depth that this is the job of every Christian parent. We are to be priests to our children. The priesthood of all believers is not just for theological arguments or proper ecclesiology. It has very practical application for every parent. Kneel Between God and Your Children The writer of Hebrews encourages us, “Brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus … let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith” (Hebrews 10:19, 22). Believers are granted confident, faith-assured access to the throne of God through Jesus—which means we are able to come to God on behalf of others. In his book Life Together, Dietrich Bonhoeffer writes about this joyful responsibility: Intercession is also a daily service we owe to God and our brother. He who denies his neighbor the service of praying for him denies him the service of a Christian. God has placed us in the lives of our children so that we will intercede for them. God placed Moses over the children of Israel for the specific purpose of crying out for God’s mercy upon them (Exodus 32:11–14). In the same way, we ought to plead with God to relent of his wrath against our sinful children. Moreover, just as God foreordained to save Israel through the desperate prayer of Moses, we must trust that God plans to save our children in part through our desperate intercessory prayers. In those moments when we are pushed to the brink of exhaustion by the obstinate disobedience of our little

showed up at their front door looking for work. Akiane took one look at the man’s facial features – remarkably close to the vision she received – and told her mother he was the one. In humility, the man initially said he was not worthy to represent his Master. But reluctantly, the man agreed, although he asked to remain anonymous. Akiane’s painting of Jesus was a painstaking effort. “The ‘Prince of Peace’ took me 40 hours to paint and another 20 hours of working with model sketching,” Akiane says. Akiane deftly works with light and shadows to create powerful impressions. “The light side of his face represents the truth, the dark side represents suffering,” she notes. Colton Burpo, the subject of the book “Heaven is for Real,” identified this painting of Jesus as the closest representation of the Savior whom he witnessed in his dramatic vision. Both Akiane and Colton were struck by the beauty of Jesus’ eyes. “All I remember were the eyes,” Akiane says,

“ and they were like no other colors that were ever created. The closest color I can depict through paints is a sapphire hue.” Colton identified the color of Jesus’ eyes as blue-green. In 2010, Akiane told Seattle station KCTS that her spiritual epiphanies caused her parents to start seeking answers. “We went through almost everything,” Akiane said. “We went through being Christian, being a Catholic, we studied Buddhism. At this point every one of my siblings have their own path toward a spiritual enlightenment.” “I have my own and my parents have theirs and my brothers have theirs,” she continued. “I’m the same person as when I was four-years-old. I haven’t changed.” Akiane’s discovery of God seems remarkably personal. “Since nobody told me who God was, I found God myself. He’s been there for me through the years. I don’t belong to any denomination or religion. I belong to God.” To eliminate any confusion, however, Jesus is first in her mind. “He is the only way to God — the only way to heaven and joy,” she states. “My personal views on Jesus have only matured and deepened since age 4. As I grow I see how vast and unlimited His love is.” “Jesus remains my highest authority, love, and God,” she adds. “I pray every day that people will one day follow Jesus, His teachings and feel His love.” “Father Forgive Them” by Akiane Akiane completed her second painting of Jesus, “Father Forgive Them,” at age 9. “I have painted about 10 paintings of Jesus,” she says, “including his mother Mary and many paintings of His creation. My current painting is another tribute to Jesus, a very special portrait, titled ‘IAM.’” As Akiane gets older, some of the early dreams and visions have begun to fade in her memory. “Although I have forgotten most of my early heavenly contacts, my recent visions continue in a special way,” she says. “I alone know how important Jesus is for me. Instead of writing it is best for me to express (this) through my personal connection — art. I portray Jesus how I see him, as human and as divine. “My art is only a representation of what I see — Jesus’ glory is beyond any description!”

else, to fill our thoughts, making Him our ‘real life.’ Praise God! It is then that we can hear God speak His love to us. We can hear Him say, "She (or he) is my delight.” That word was spoken to me at a time I really needed to hear it. We try so hard to work for God, to please Him, and yet we can become so busy with the work that we forget to love the Lord of the work. I want to stay in a place of feeling God's love for me. I may be frustrated with all that's going on around me and be too caught up with things. God wants my attention. He wants my love, and He wants to love me the way I need to be loved. troubles, but we are not crushed and broken. We are perplexed, but we don't give up and quit. We are hunted down, but God never abandons us. We get knocked down, but we get up again and keep going. Through suffering, these bodies of ours constantly share in the death of Jesus so that the life Jesus may also be seen in our bodies (2 Corinthians 4:8-10). I want the life of Christ to be seen in me. I don't want it said that when things don't go my way that I continue to force the issues. I want to be able to say, "God has another plan" and let go of it. I want to be able to release the problems so I can be healed and made strong through it all. I want the ‘Lover of my soul’ to be able

ones, we cannot become hardhearted and harsh. Moses himself dealt with ornery, complaining and disobedient children for 40 years. The golden calf incident was perhaps their most poignant act of direct disobedience. In that moment, Moses could have allowed his anger to get the best of him. Instead, he was broken by Israel’s rebellion, and he pleaded for God’s mercy. Parents should be driven to the same merciful intercession.

the people to understand how to obey God’s word. And Moses placed this responsibility upon parents as well: These words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children. (Deuteronomy 6:6–7) Later in the same chapter, he gives parents the responsibility to pass their faith down to the next generation. The constant cycles of sin throughout the Old Testament demonstrate Israel’s failure to do this very thing. FaTeach Your Children to Observe thers failed to teach their sons God’s One of the primary functions of the word. They failed to have sufficient priests in the Old Testament was to help conversations with their children

to speak to me His songs of love without any hindrances. Let the words of Christ, in all their richness, live in your hearts and make you wise. Use His words to teach and counsel each other. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts (Colossians 3:16). That's the attitude I want. I need to let Christ live large in me and make me wise. I want to be able to be a blessing to others and to always have a song to God in my heart. What joy is mine when I refuse to give the distractions a key to my heart! What rejoicing I can have if I don't let the cares of this world have a key to my heart! The choice is yours and mine. You and I have to make the decision. Who has the key to your heart? God, You have the key to my heart! All Scripture references taken from The Book, New Living Translation.

about God’s mighty act of salvation in bringing them out of Egypt (Deuteronomy 6:20–25). Just read 2 Kings. It’s no accident that the kingdom went from the heights of obedience to the depths of depravity in just one generation. Fathers were not passing down the instruction of God, and the results were not surprising. This fact doesn’t mean we pretend our children are born again if they are not. It does mean that we teach them God’s word consistently and constantly. It is through this word that they will hear the voice of the Holy Spirit summoning them back to God. It is through this word that they will hear the good news of a mighty Savior. It is in this word that they will learn how to obey and glorify God. Give Your Children Grace Last and certainly not least, priests mediated the grace of God to the people. They declared the forgiveness of sins. They comforted the people with the grace that God extended to them through sacrifice. In the New Testament, the once-forall sacrifice of Jesus has made all other sacrifices obsolete. However, that does not mean we, as priests, are not God’s instruments in extending his grace to one another. Believers have the responsibility to “confess [our] sins to one another and pray for one another, that [we] may be healed” (James 5:16). With our children, we have the blessed opportunity to show them true grace—not cheap grace, but costly grace. Sometimes we parents fall prey to believing that obedience is our only objective. The Bible makes it clear that true grace comes before true obedience (Romans 1:5). Make it your primary goal to demonstrate to your children the costly grace and forgiveness of God through Jesus Christ. If our heavenly Father is rich in mercy, grace and love, then our children should see that in us as their parents. Inasmuch we seek to reflect the Father to our children, we become more like our Savior Jesus Christ who came to show us the Father (John 14:8–9). The church of the ducks: The 19th century philosopher Soren Kierkegaard's told a story about a make-believe country where only ducks live. One Sunday morning all the ducks came into their little duck church, waddled down the aisle, and waddled into the pews. Then the duck minister came in, took his place behind the pulpit, opened the duck bible and read, "Ducks! You have wings, and with wings you can fly like eagles." The ducks all quacked out loud “Amen!” The duck pastor continued to read and said, "With your wings you can soar into the sky!" Again the ducks responded with thunderous Amen and Hallelujah so the duck pastor read some more with even greater emphasis: "Ducks, you have wings! You can fly!" And all the ducks in the church quacked, "Amen!" Then the service ended and they came out of the church. Not a single duck spread its wings to fly. They all waddled home in a noisy, “Quack! Quack! Quack…!” Knowledge of obedience is not enough: James 4:17 “Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins.” It is not enough to know what you’ve heard or read in the word of God about what God wills for you. What matters is that if you know what to do, that you do it! Having the knowledge about God’s will is not enough. Knowing the necessity of obedience is not enough. These things are not the same as being obedient. Knowing what should be done obligates a person to do it. The advantage of being taught about obedience is not that we get an “outstanding grade” from God because we get the right answer. To believe in something is to act like it is so. Hence, the advantage of believing God’s word and specifically, God’s will is that we obey it because it is true, good, precious, and real. Obedience is for our good: Obedience is for our good. James calls it the “good” which means beautiful, excellent, noble, or right. Jesus is a King. Jesus dictates and commands. But they are meant to make us well and happy. Every command is meant for our good. They are loving guidelines of an infallibly infinite and wise heavenly Father for the good of those He loves. Abraham--faith in obedience: Hebrews 11:8 “By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.” Abraham is mentioned ten times in Hebrews. The great progenitor of the Jewish people and his wife are now singled out as examples of faith. The Jews prided themselves on their descent from Abraham, and the great patriarch is mentioned in the New Testament as one who had faith and who acted on his faith. In line with this the author gives more space to Abraham than to any other individual on his list. Abraham accepted God's promises and acted on them even though there was nothing to indicate that they would be fulfilled. This faith is seen in his acceptance of the promise of a child when Sarah was old and even more in his readiness to sacrifice that child-- the one through whom the promise was to be fulfilled-- when God commanded. God demands obedience: Micah 6:8 “He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” The scriptures clearly teach us that God demands obedience from his people. We are responsible before God to obey His commands. Obedience to the commandments of God is utterly crucial in living the Christian life. What God wants is a heart response to God demonstrated in the basic elements of true religion. God has told the people what is good. The Mosaic law differentiated between good and bad and reflected God's will in their religious and social lives. They were to act "justly", here in the sense of true religion, i.e., the ethical response to God that has a manifestation in social concerns as well. “To love mercy” is to freely and willingly show kindness to others. "To walk humbly with your God" means to live in conscious fellowship with him, exercising a spirit of humility before him. It is not that sacrifice was completely ineffectual and that simply a proper heart attitude to God would suffice. Rather, God has no interest in the multiplication of empty religious acts. These ethical requirements do not comprise the way of salvation. We are still called to the exercise of true religion because we are in a covenant relationship with God in which the law has been placed within their hearts not abrogated. Our obedience is inspired by the indwelling Holy Spirit, not by the letter of the law. We are saved for obedience: Romans 1:5 “Through him and for his name's sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith.” The desired response to the gospel message is "obedience that comes from faith". Paul's readers were not called, as he was, to apostleship; they were called "to belong to Jesus Christ" and to be "saints", the common term designating believers. The scriptures teach us that we are saved for obedience. There are two beautiful truths balanced so wonderfully in Scripture. We are not saved by obedience. Salvation comes by grace through faith in Christ. But, we are saved for obedience. The test of love for God: John 14:15 "If you love me, you will obey what I command.” Obedience to God is the proof of our love for Him. True knowledge of God does not end with speculative ideas but with obedience to the moral law and with the presence of God's love in the believer. 2 John 1:6 “And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.” The test of love is obedience to God's commands, and the test of obedience is whether one "walks in love." Love of God must result in obedience or it is not true love. Jesus' own love for you and I was manifested by his obedience even to death.

Haryana burns as Jat protest turns into unruly violence

R o h ta k/ C h a n d i gaRh, FebRuaRy 20 (ianS): Chaos reigned in Haryana on Saturday with escalated violence in several areas as hooligans, who have joined ranks of Jat protestors, ran amok, setting afire government and private property and vehicles, blocking roads and highways, disrupting trains and uprooting tracks and indulging in looting. Curfew was imposed in Hisar, Sonipat and Jind towns after violence. Violence was also reported from Kaithal. The death toll in the violence in past 36 hours has reached four with over 100 people being injured. One person was killed when soldiers opened fire on an unruly mob in Jhajjar. The Haryana Police and local administration in the affected districts have failed to react to the violence, leave alone controlling it even as the army moved in to control the situation in the worst-affected areas of Rohtak, Bhiwani and Jhajjar. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and NSA Ajit Doval discussed the deteriorating law and order situation in the state in New Delhi. While Haryana Chief

Minister Manohar Lal Khattar appealed to protestors to stop the violence and his BJP invited them to hold talks with the party's central leadership, his predecessor Bhupinder Singh Hooda, of the Congress, said that he would start a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi from Saturday till the situation normalised. Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader Abhay Chautala demanded that the Khattar government be dismissed and president's rule be imposed in view of the deteriorating situation. Army columns conducted flag marches at various places in the violence-hit districts as the security forces grappled with the tense situation in areas where violence occurred. However, the army did not take a flag march towards Gate No.2 of Maharishi Dayanand University in Rohtak town as nearly 3,000 Jat youth laid siege to the area, armed with sharpedged weapons, despite warnings by the authorities not to venture out of their homes. Protesters set several buses on fire in the Gohana bus stand in Sonipat district, 210 km from Chandigarh.

BJP invites Jat leaders for talks new delhi, FebRuaRy 20 (ianS): The BJP on Saturday appealed to the Jat community agitating in Haryana demanding reservation to maintain peace and invited them to hold talks with the party's central leadership. "Our central leaders are ready to hold discussions with the Jat protesters with an open mind. We invite them for talks so that we can reach a conclusion over the issue," union minister Chaudhary Birender Singh said at a press conference. "We would especially like to invite the youth agitators," he added. Haryana minister O.P. Dhankar, union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Sanjeev Balyan, BJP general secretary in charge of Haryana Anil Jain met the party's central leadership earlier on Saturday. Birender Singh, who is a Rajya Sabha member from Haryana, also appealed to the Jat agitators to maintain peace. "We appeal to all political leaders and social organisations to maintain calm and come forward for talks. We assure you of a fruitful result if you come forward for talks," he said. Meanwhile, the Army conducted flag marches in the violence-hit districts of Haryana where the Jat community has been agitating demanding reservation.

Uproar over 'beef biryani' being served at AMU aligaRh, FebRuaRy 20 (Pti): The Aligarh Muslim University which has been battling to preserve its character as a minority institution now finds itself in another controversy this time over beef. The issue broke out on social media yesterday when a WhatsApp post circulated a report that 'beef biryani' was being served at the AMU Medical College canteen, an allegation promptly denied by the university. BJP Mayor Shakuntala Bharti, along with party leaders and several right wing activists, held a demonstration outside the office of Senior Superintendent of Police today, demanding registration of an FIR against the contractor of AMU medical college canteen for serving 'beef biryani'. As news of the controversy spread, senior AMU officials led by University Proctor M Mohsin Khan rushed to the Medical College canteen and carried out an on-the-spot preliminary check. University spokesperson Rahat Abrar alleged that the incident was a "malicious" attempt to defame the institution, asserting that the beef mentioned in the menu was of buffalo meat. The spokesperson said that according to a preliminary investigation, it was revealed that the contract for the canteen was ending soon and some "vested interests" were eyeing it next, and so were creating a controversy.

Civilian, three CRPF men killed in Kashmir militant attack SRinagaR, FebRuaRy 20 (ianS): Three CRPF troopers and a civilian were killed and at least 10 other people including civilians injured on Saturday in a gunfight between guerrillas and security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district. The gunfight ensued after the militants attacked a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) bus on the Jammu-Srinagar highway and then entered a training institute located nearby. After attacking the CRPF bus, the militants believed to be three in number, entered the multi-storeyed Jammu and Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute (JKEDI) building situated close to the highway. A gardener at the JKEDI was also injured in the shooting and succumbed in hospital.

Nearly 550 trains were either cancelled or diverted since the agitation began. The Vita milk plant was set on fire in Rohtak and scores of shops were set afire in the town. Curfew continued in Rohtak, Bhiwani and Jhaj-

Singhal said that 129 cases have so far been registered against agitators and claimed that the situation improved on Saturday compared to Friday. Home Secretary P.K. Das said no untoward incident was reported from Rohtak, Bhiwani and Jhajjar districts, and that more army and para-military

would be air-lifted to the violence-hit areas. "A petrol pump and Sadar police station in Meham were damaged and set on fire. The national highway-1 (NH-1) is blocked but efforts are on to get the blockade lifted," Singhal said. He said 13 army columns have reached the state to assist the administration and 10 more columns are being airlifted, while 10 companies of

paramilitary forces have reached the state and 23 more are on their way. The DGP said the ongoing agitation in Haryana was "leaderless", and the role of outsiders in the violence could not be ruled out. Soldiers were airdropped earlier on Saturday in violence-hit Rohtak town after the protesters blocked and dug up roads to prevent their entry. Indian Air Force helicopters

conducted several sorties to transport soldiers into some parts of the town. The agitation began as Jats demanded reservation for the community in government jobs and educational institutions. Reports said NH-1 was blocked by protesters in Sonipat district, 50 km from Delhi, and thousands of people and hundreds of vehicles were stranded. Traffic was also disrupted in Gurgaon.

India, Nepal try to mend fences; Nine agreements signed new delhi, FebRuaRy 20 (Pti): India today conveyed to Nepal that success of its new Constitution will depend on resolution of contentious issues through “consensus and dialogue” in a time-bound manner as both sides held extensive talks with focus on repairing ties soured in the wake of a four-month -long agitation by the Indian-origin Madhesi community. India was for peace, stability and overall development of Nepal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted after meeting his Nepalese counterpart K P Sharma Oli, who on his part said the main reason for his visit was to clear “misunderstandings” in ties that persisted in the last few months and that they “no longer exist”. The two sides signed nine agreements including one on utilisation of Indian grant of USD 250 million to Nepal for post-earthquake reconstruction and another on improving of road infrastructure in Nepal’s Terai region bordering India. Calling finalisation of Constitution a major achievement for Nepal, Modi expressed the hope that all political parties will

and through political dialogue and by taking all sections together, you (Oli) will be able to resolve all issues relating to the Constitution satisfactorily and take Nepal forward towards the path of development and stability,” Modi said in his media statement, in presence of Oli. In the meeting, Modi stressed that Nepal’s stability was linked to India’s security. On combating terrorism, he said, “We will not allow terrorists and criminals to use our open border. In this regard the

security agencies of the two countries will intensify cooperation.” Asked if the Nepalese Prime Minister could address India’s concerns, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar said the “tone and tenor” of the visit was forwardlooking, adding assurances given on addressing grievances within Nepal if left unaddressed may “detract” the country from stability. “This was not a recriminatory visit. This was a forward- looking visit. It was a visit in a cooperative sense,” he said, replying to

a barrage of questions on whether India was satisfied with Nepal’s assurance on issues relating to the new Constitution. He said Modi expressed the hope that all the outstanding issues in the Constitution will be resolved in a time-bound manner. On whether India was worried about Nepal getting closer to China, Jaishankar rejected such apprehensions saying the word China did not come up in the talks. In his statement, Oli, who arrived here yesterday on his first foreign visit after becoming Prime Minister in October last year, said he came to clear misunderstandings and “have done so”. Ties between the two countries had soured in the wake of agitation by the Madhesi community, which shares close family and cultural ties with Indians, saying it failed to address their concerns over representation and homeland. The agitators had blocked trading points for almost four months crippling supply of petroleum products, medicines and other commodities by India to that country. The blockade was lifted this month.

Lookout notice issued March in Delhi on February 23 over Rohith's suicide for three youth

new delhi, FebRuaRy 20 (ianS): Delhi Police issued a lookout notice for three youth -- believed to be JNU students -- in connection with the alleged "anti-India" sloganeering at the varsity campus last week, a source said on Saturday. "Lookout notice was issued for Umar Khalid, Anirvan Bhattacharya and Riyaz. These are suspected of having raised anti-national slogans at a controversial event in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)," the Delhi Police source told IANS. Umar Khalid and Anirvan Bhattacharya are JNU students while it could not be ascertained whether Riyaz is a student of JNU. These youths had resigned from the Democratic Students' Union (DSU) three months back. DSU is alleged to be affiliated to the banned organisation Communist Party of India (Maoist). According to sources, police asked the Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO) to alert airport authorities so that these suspects do not leave the country. sure the public that parliamentary democracy does work and is sensitive to the needs of the people," Ansari said. dispels rumors about Wind powers on greener future WHO Zika and microcephaly for ‘climate-conscious’ Bhutan THIMPHU, FebrUary 20 (THoMson reUTers FoUndaTIon): From wind power to biogas, bicycles and electric buses, Bhutan is exploring new ways to play its part in the global push to keep climate change in check. Last month, two wind turbines - the Himalayan mountain kingdom's first - were inaugurated at Rubesa village in Wangduephodrang district, some 1,450 metres above sea level. "Windmills are new to Bhutan, and we can easily harness wind (here) given the location of the village," said Pema Letho, an electrical engineer with Bhutan Power Corporation Limited. The turbines are expected to generate a combined 600 kilowatts, enough to provide electricity to 300 households in the village, a four-hour drive from the capital Thimphu. Bhutan's government is promoting new sources of renewable energy amid increasing demand for electricity. It is also hoping to reduce its reliance on hydroelectricity - which can lead to power shortages in winter when water levels drop - and import less fossil fuel for transport. "The plan is to boost energy security in the country and diversify the energy supply," said Mewang Gyeltshen, acting director of the department of renewable energy. "This is being done to counter the impending threats of climate change," he said. If the Rubesa project is a success, the department plans to install 24 more wind farms to make up for power shortages during the dry season, when hydro output drops to less than a fifth of capacity and electricity has to be imported from India. The renewable energy department is also looking at installing solar panels that would generate 1 megawatt (MW) of electricity, and plans to supply 13,500 solar

country is also committed to maintaining forest cover on 60 percent of its land - a goal it is exceeding with cover of more than 70 percent, thanks to regular tree planting. This and other policies, such as lowering the level of glacial lakes, could help protect vulnerable mountain communities in the landlocked country from climate change impacts, including a higher risk of landslides and flash floods.

cook stoves and 2,800 home biogas digesters in 20 districts by the end of 2016. Mini hydropower plants with a potential to produce 33,000 MW of electricity are also in the pipeline. BIKE-FRIENDLY CITY After the U.N. climate change summit in December, where some 195 governments agreed a new deal to tackle global warming based on national pledges, the tiny Himalayan nation has begun to put its own commitments into practice. Transforming Thimphu into a bicycle-friendly city is one of Bhutan's objectives to curb planet-warming emissions from transport. The municipal corporation is planning to build dedicated cycle lanes and tracks around the city. "The government should encourage people to ride bicycles, walk or use public transport, and switch to electric cars to cut down carbon emissions," said ardent cyclist Lungtok Tshewang Chedup, 23, as he climbed the road

to Kuenselphodrang on his Trek 500 mountain bike. Bike rider and bank worker Pema Gyeltshen said the government should make sure cycling is safe and conduct awareness campaigns for motorists. "It would be easier then to encourage people to use bicycles to get to work," he said, urging the authorities to introduce more parking areas for the two-wheelers. The number of cyclists has increased since the launch of popular races several years ago, such as the international "Tour of the Dragon" organised by the Bhutan Olympic Committee, according to cycle shop owner Ngawang Dorji. The "Giant" bicycle shop opened around a year ago, and Dorji says he has sold 150 bikes since then. Motor vehicles are going greener too. Electric cars were introduced two years ago, and four new charging stations were installed this month, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, bringing the total to 10.

"GLOBAL SOLUTION" "Global warming is a global problem that requires a global solution, and shouldn't be between the rich world versus the poor," Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay said in a written response to questions from the Thomson Reuters Foundation. The South Asian nation's leader has been talking to Ashok Leyland, one of India's biggest manufacturers of commercial vehicles, to test electric buses in Bhutan. And if Bhutan taps the full potential of its hydroelectric sector, it could export more clean power to its two high-emitting neighbours, economic giants India and China, he said. According to Bhutan's environment commission, the tiny country offsets 4.4 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually by exporting hydroelectricity to India. Bhutan already sells 70 percent of the power it generates to India, while hydro provides 100 percent of electricity in its urban areas and 94 percent in rural zones. Prime Minister Tobgay said the

FUNDING NEEDED Bhutan's 11th Five-Year Plan, a national economic strategy running from 2013 to 2018, has embraced carbon-neutral development. The government also aims to integrate into its 12th Plan the climate action commitments it submitted for the U.N. climate deal, which will come into effect in 2020. The agriculture ministry, meanwhile, is encouraging farmers, who make up 70 percent of the population, to adopt sustainable land use and improved livestock management, and is promoting organic agriculture. "There are no doubts about the pledges we have made, and we are working hard," said agriculture minister Yeshey Dorji, who represented Bhutan at the U.N. climate summit. But the success of Bhutan's commitments will largely depend on international financial and technical support to help tackle climate change and keep its progress towards sustainable development on track. While the amount of funding the country will need is unclear, it is already receiving some assistance. The Asian Development Bank and the Norwegian government, for example, agreed a $6 million project in 2014 to boost Bhutan's clean energy development and improve energy efficiency.

beIjIng, FebrUary 20 (Ians): While the Zika virus is spreading explosively in the Americas, where an increasing number of microcephaly cases are being reported, rumours about the virus and microcephaly are also swirling. The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Friday issued a statement, dispelling the four biggest rumours around the mosquito-borne virus and microcephaly, Xinhua reported. Rumour Number One: Microcephaly in babies is caused by vaccines. There is no evidence that vaccines cause microcephaly in babies, the WHO said. The statement added that there is no evidence linking any vaccine to the increase in microcephaly cases that were observed first in French Polynesia during the 2013-2014 outbreak and more recently in Brazil. Meanwhile, an extensive review of the literature published in 2014 found no evidence that any vaccine administered during pregnancy resulted in birth defects. The Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety reached a similar conclusion in 2014. Rumour Number Two: Pyriproxyfen insecticide causes microcephaly A team of WHO scientists found no evidence that pyriproxyfen affects the course of pregnancy or the development of a foetus, after they recently reviewed data on the toxicology of pyriproxyfen. The US Environmental Protection Agency and EU investigators reached a similar conclusion when they carried out a separate review of the product.

Pyriproxyfen, one of the 12 larvicides that WHO recommends to reduce the development of mosquitos, has been used since the late 1990s without being linked to microcephaly. In places with no piped water, people tend to store drinking water in outdoor containers, which serve as ideal breeding grounds for mosquitos. Larvicides are often used in those containers to kill the mosquito in its larval stage. When people drink water from containers that have been treated with pyriproxyfen, they are exposed to the larvicide -- but in tiny amounts that do not harm their health. Moreover, 90-95 percent of any larvicide ingested is excreted into the urine within 48 hours. Ru m ou r Nu mb e r Three: The Zika outbreak and recently increasing microcephaly cases in Brazil are linked to the release of genetically modified (GM) mosquitoes in the country. The WHO said there is no evidence that the Zika virus disease or microcephaly in Brazil is caused by GM mosquitoes. The transgenic practice is a new means to control mosquitoes, in which the genes of male mosquitoes are modified and their larval offspring cannot survive after they mate with female mosquitoes. Currently, the WHO encouraged affected countries to boost the use of current mosquito control interventions and judiciously test the new approaches that could be applied in the future. Increase in pollution leads to rise in strokes Fiji declares curfew nationwide as powerful cyclone Winston approaches new york, FebrUary 20 (Ians): Rising levels of pollution have led to an increase in the number of strokes, revealed a study, reaffirming the growing evidence that climate change and overall air quality contributes to heart disease. The results showed that particles less than 2.5 mm in diameter (PM2.5) pose the greatest health risks due to their small size (1/30th diameter of a human hair and not visible to the human eye). They are created from combustion from cars, power plants, forest fires and others. Researchers also found that temperature had an impact on air quality and risk of stroke. High temperatures create a critical thermal stress that may increase the risk of stroke and other heat-and air quality-related illnesses and deaths. “Patients with stroke are in danger of dehydra-

tion due to high temperatures in the summer and pneumonia, influenza and other respiratory diseases in winter,” said Longjian Liu, associate professor at the Drexel University in Philadelphia in the US. Women and the elderly also appear more vulnerable to stroke risk due to air quality and heat-related diseases, he added. The study data was collected from the US and China -- “the world’s two largest emitters of greenhouse gases and responsible for about one-third of global warming to date,” the authors said. The team evaluated air quality data collected between 2010 and 2013 from 1,118 counties in 49 states in America and from 120 cities in 32 provinces in China. Across the two countries, researchers found that the total number of stroke cases rose 1.19 per-

cent for each 10 mg per cubic metre air (µg/m3), an increase of PM2.5. Overall, the southern region of America had the highest average annual PM2.5 while the West had the lowest -- which correlates with the fact that people living in the South had the highest prevalence of stroke at 4.2 percent compared with those in the West who had the lowest at three percent, Liu said. Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the US killing nearly 129,000 people every year, and is a leading cause of disability. Worldwide, the prevalence of stroke stood at 33 million, with 16.9 million people suffering their first stroke, and is the secondleading cause of global deaths behind heart disease. The study was presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference 2016.

sydney, FebrUary 20 (reUTers): Fiji declared a nationwide curfew on Saturday, as airlines suspended flights and the prime minister warned people to seek refuge from a cyclone that could prove to be the Pacific island nation's most powerful on record. After twice hammering outlying islands in nearby Tonga last week, Cyclone Winston re-intensified and began to track west towards Suva, the capital of Fiji, packing winds of 230 km per hour (143 mph), with gusts of up to 325 kph (202 mph). Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama urged Fijians to prepare themselves for a "terrible event", Australian broadcaster ABC reported. "We cannot afford to be complacent," it quoted the prime minister as saying. "And I am especially con-

cerned that some people in urban areas do not appear to have heeded the warnings about the seriousness of the threat." A nationwide curfew has been imposed, the gov-

ernment said on social media website Facebook. "A total public curfew will take effect across the country today from 6.00 p.m.," it added. It issued a list of 758 evacuation cen-

tres across the nation of just under 900,000 people. As Fiji's weather service warned people in the east to "expect very destructive hurricane-force winds," Suva resident Alice Cle-

ments said the power had failed just after 5:00 p.m. and she expected water supplies to be hit next. "I have palm trees flying all around me at the moment," Clements, an official with a U.N. agency, told Reuters. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said Winston was following a path that might spare Suva the full force of its winds, rated as category 5, the highest ranking on the hurricane wind scale. "The cyclone has tracked further north than expected over the past 24 hours," the U.N. agency said. Airlines Virgin and Jetstar suspended flights into and out of Fiji's international airport at Nadi, while the national carrier suspended all flights.

Cameron calls June 23 referendum on EU after clinching deal China jails hospital “scalpers” London, FebrUary 20 (reUTers): Prime Minister David Cameron called a June 23 referendum on membership of the European Union on Saturday as he sought to rally his divided Conservative Party behind a deal which he said would guarantee Britain's prosperity and security in the bloc. After spelling out detail of the deal - clinched at an EU summit in Brussels - to his senior ministers, Cameron said he had secured the cabinet's blessing to recommend to voters that Britain stay in the bloc it joined in 1973. "I believe that Britain will be safer, stronger and better off by remaining in a reformed European Union," Cameron said outside his Number 10 Downing Street residence in London. "Leaving Europe would threaten our economic and our national security," Cameron said, adding that he would propose to Parliament that the referendum be held on Thursday June 23, in the middle of the Glastonbury music festival and the Euro 2016 soccer championship.

One of Cameron's closest political allies, Justice Secretary Michael Gove, and five other cabinet members will campaign to leave. They signed a poster for the Vote Leave out campaign saying "Let's take back control." While the rebellion illustrated the depth of the division over Europe within his ruling Conservative Party, Cameron's most senior ministers including interior minister Theresa May and finance minister George Osborne backed EU membership. London Mayor Boris Johnson, who has charmed some voters with a buffoonish persona that masks fierce ambition to succeed Cameron, has yet to make his position clear. A source told Reuters that Johnson might show his hand on Sunday. The agreement Cameron reached in Brussels granted Britain an explicit exemption from the founding goal of "ever closer union", offered concessions on the welfare rights of migrant workers and safeguards for the City of London.

ery day to Brussels."

Though British voters are split over membership, betting odds have moved further in favor of Britain remaining in the EU after Cameron's deal, according to bookmaker Ladbrokes. A British exit from the EU would rock the Union - already shaken by differences over migration and the future of the euro zone - by ripping away its second-largest economy, one of its top two military powers and by far its richest financial center. Pro-Europeans warn an exit could also trigger the break-up of the United Kingdom by prompting

another Scottish independence vote. The $2.9 trillion British economy would face years of uncertain negotiations over the terms of a divorce. Opponents of EU membership say Britain would prosper outside what they say is a doomed Germany-dominated bloc that punches way below its weight on the world stage. "This is a truly pathetic deal," Nigel Farage, the head of the UK Independence Party said. "Let's leave the EU, control our borders, run our own country and stop handing 55 million pounds ev-

CONSERVATIVES DIVIDED The issue of Europe has divided the Conservatives for three decades and played a major part in the downfall of Cameron's two Conservative predecessors, Margaret Thatcher and John Major. Opinion polls show that a significant number of Britons have yet to make up their mind, though perceptions that the EU has failed to deal with the migrant crisis may be turning some towards a 'Brexit'. Bookmaker Ladbrokes said however that betting odds indicated there was now a 69 percent chance of Britain remaining in the EU with a 31 percent chance of Britain leaving. Cameron is due to make a statement to parliament on Monday, triggering the start of the campaign for the referendum. The cabinet meeting, the first to be held on a Saturday since the 1982 Falklands War, will formalize government support for staying in the EU and Cameron has said ministers will then be free to campaign on

whichever side they want. Cameron acknowledged that Gove would campaign to leave, saying he was disappointed but not surprised. He suggested other Conservatives may also join the "out" camp. Gove joined Christopher Grayling, leader of the House of Commons, Iain Duncan Smith, a former Conservative Party leader, employment minister Priti Patel, culture minister John Whittingdale and Northern Ireland minister Theresa Villiers in support the leaving camp. Media tycoon Rupert Murdoch, an influential figure in Britain through his ownership of a clutch of U.K. newspapers, congratulated Gove. "Congratulations Michael Gove," Murdoch said on Twitter. "Friends always knew his principles would overcome his personal friendships." The message from the 84-year-old executive chairman of News Corp and 21st Century Fox Inc raises the prospect of some of the media tycoon's British newspapers possibly campaigning for an EU exit.

for scamming patients

sHangHaI, FebrUary 20 (reUTers): A Chinese court in Beijing has jailed 15 hospital "scalpers" for allegedly scamming unsuspecting patients by posing as medical staff without qualifications, exaggerating positive effects of treatments and then prescribing expensive drugs. The court in Beijing's Chaoyang district sentenced the 15 people to jail sentences ranging from 19 months to more than two years, the official Xinhua news agency said on Saturday. The issue of hospitalbased fraud flared up in January when a woman in Beijing posted a video denouncing other scalpers for buying up "tickets" often needed to ensure an appointment with a doctor and then inflating the price to re-sell them to patients. Chinese patients contend with a creaking healthcare system which suffers from a shortage of doctors, snarling queues to see medical workers, and a huge disparity between urban and rural care that drives many patients from villages and the countryside to hospitals

in big cities. The Beijing court said on its official microblog that the 15 people had illegally rented consulting rooms at large hospitals and then lured in patients with fake credentials and prescribed them expensive traditional Chinese medicines. It said the people had swindled over 60 patients and raked in tens of thousands of dollars in profit through the scheme. China is trying to reform its healthcare system, looking to encourage more private investment in hospitals to take some of the pressure off overloaded state hospitals. However, despite the talk of reform, industry insiders say the drive is being stalled because of a lack of real support by Beijing and other obstacles to making changes to China's huge, fragmented public healthcare sector. Reforms to reduce hospitals' reliance on drug sales also faces a revolt from doctors who argue this will take away a key revenue stream at a time when medical staff are overworked, underpaid and often violently abused by angry patients.

Lillard scores 51 as Blazers rout Warriors Origin of the word Naga

Washington, February 20 (aFP): Damian Lillard scored a career-high 51 points and the Portland Trail Blazers routed defending NBA champion Golden State 137-105, inflicting only the Warriors' fifth loss of the season. It was the worst loss by a defending NBA champion since the Chicago Bulls ripped Miami by 42 points in the opener of the 200607 campaign. The Warriors, known for their defensive skill as well as scoring depth, had not surrendered so many points in any game over the past two seasons. "It was a lot of fun," Lillard said. "We were able to get out and run. We were hitting guys on cuts, making the extra pass and playing good defense. It was a fastpaced game. It's a lot of fun to watch and a lot of fun to be a part of a game like that." Lillard made 18-of-28 shots from the floor, including 9-of-12 from 3-point range, and contributed seven assists and six steals as the Trail Blazers won their fourth game in a row and 13th in 16 games. "He was phenomenal," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said of Lillard. "He looked great out there." The Warriors are chas-

ing the all-time best record in league history, the 72-10 mark of the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls. But they fell to 48-5 in their first game after a week off for the NBA All-Star Game. "You are playing the defending champions. It's a challenge," Lillard said. "You've got to be willing to face that challenge and tonight I was ready. They are a tough team. We have to play well against them." Lillard became the first player in NBA history with 50 points, five assists and five steals against a defend-

ing champion. The only others to achieve the feat in any game were Michael Jordan, Allen Iverson and Rick Barry. "My name next to Michael Jordan -- it's crazy but it's an honor," Lillard said. The Warriors made 13 of their 20 turnovers in the third quarter, matching Portland's game total in just 12 minutes, as the Blazers rose to 28-27. In other games, Britain's Luol Deng scored a season-high 30 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the floor and also contributed 11 rebounds and four steals

to spark Miami past host Atlanta 115-111. Tony Parker scored 25 points to lead San Antonio over the Los Angeles Lakers 119-113 despite 25 from Kobe Bryant in a losing cause. Chicago's Doug McDermott scored a careerhigh 30 points and the Bulls rallied to beat visiting Toronto 116-106 and snap a five-game losing streak. Monta Ellis scored 27 points in leading Indiana to a 101-98 victory at Oklahoma City. Kevin Durant led the Thunder with 31 points

while Russell Westbrook contributed 23 points and 18 assists. James Harden scored 27 points and Trevor Ariza added 25 for Houston in a 116-100 victory at Phoenix, which lost for the 25th time in 27 games. Minnesota went 31-for-31 at the free throw line but still lost as Mike Conley scored 25 points for Memphis in a 109-104 home triumph. Nikola Vucevic had 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead Orlando over Dallas 110-104. Brooklyn big man Brook Lopez matched a season-high with 33 points and the Nets beat the New York Knicks 109-98 in their first game under new general manager Sean Marks of New Zealand. John Wall had 22 points, eight rebounds and eight assists as Washington beat visiting Detroit 98-86. Anthony Davis had 34 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots in New Orleans' 121-114 home victory over Philadelphia while Derrick Favors netted 23 as Utah beat Boston 111-93. Kemba Walker scored 25 points as Charlotte won 98-95 at Milwaukee while DeMarcus Cousins scored 37 to lead Sacramento over Denver 116-100.

In Solidarity with Jawaharlal Conflict Transformation Nehru University (JNU) Training Held In Baguio City

A

s I write this, young men and women are being dragged to the courts and jails, branded as “anti nationals” and threats to “mother India”, roughened up even in the court in total disregard of the law. What we are witnessing today is a systematic assault on spaces of academic freedom by the right wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government and its affiliates; reminiscent of the Emergency under Indira Gandhi’s government. From Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), to Hyderabad Central University (HCU) and now Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jadavpur University, all have been branded as dens of “anti nationals and terrorists”. The intrusion of the regime into the affairs of universities betrays its deep suspicion of spaces of free and critical thinking. This interference merits serious attention and interrogation. Universities have come under attack precisely because they are factories of different “imaginations of India” as opposed to the BJP’s ideology of Hindutva – an idea put forth by V. D Savarkar that calls for a homogeneous India around the ideals of Hinduism. However hard the BJP tries to euphemise its ideology – in a bid to appease the minority anxiety - the trajectory of the regime shows its allegiance to Hindutva. It is little wonder that communal agendas such as construction of Ram temple, banning of cow slaughter, Yoga etc have found its way into the party’s to-dolist. Judging from the recent developments it is evident that BJP’s interpretation of the idea of nation is parochial, intolerant and chauvinistic. The BJP and its affiliates have failed to appreciate the fact that the idea of nationalism and patriotism cannot be monopolized by any group(s); that, any imagination of India apart from the party’s stance does not automatically translate into anti-India position. There is a difference between anti-establishment and anti national; and no government is beyond reproach. The project of nation building is a

dynamic process involving perpetual intellectual exercise. A nation is always in the making, and any attempt to arrest this will be detrimental to the health of the nation. India is a diverse country with divergent races, languages, religions and imaginations. The strength of India lies in its unity in diversity and not homogeneity. While the “alleged anti-national” sloganeering by few students of JNU is highly condemnable, the government’s hurry in branding all the students as anti-nationals and coming down heavily before a proper enquiry is equally condemnable. I wonder which one is more dangerous to the country, a few alleged “anti-national” voices or diminishing space to dissent and protest. In the light of the current developments, it is high time for the minorities, especially the Nagas who are ‘racially-linguisticallyreligious’ minorities to interrogate sincerely what the rise of Hindu-right-wing under the current dispensation, and the project of saffronsation and sanskritisation of the party’s affiliates mean to the Naga identity. How will homogenization affect the Nagas? Should integration of the nation be at the cost of assimilation of the minorities? Where do the Nagas fit in the ideology of Hindutva which aims for a Hindu Rastra? And to the BJP Nagaland, while appreciating your right to protest, I wish to ask you, where was your protest when BJP member Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi asked beef eaters to go to Pakistan? A remark that implicitly mean beef eating communities are not Indians. Where was your protest when BJP’s Delhi election manifesto claimed North-Easterners as immigrants? Where was your protest when right wing elements celebrated Nathuram Godse, the person who assassinated the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi? You were silent. And this silence speaks louder than your selective protest. In solidarity with JNU! Obee K. Rose Alumnus JNU, Kohima.

Mrs. Sharon Buttry is the wife of Daniel Buttry. She accompanies her husband and supports him in the training wherever such trainings are being organised. Another resource person is Mr. Jack. He is Philippino. He is also one of the key leaders in the training. Some of the main themes in the training are: 1. Biblical leadership style of conflict management. 2. Jesus style of conflict management. 3. Approaches to handling conflict. 4. Principles of Negotiation. 5. Approaches to Building Peace. 6. Consensus Decision making. 7. Methods of Nonviolent Action. 8. A conflict Resolution planning tools. For me to attend this training was an immense blessing to be a facilitator in times of conflict situation in the Naga context. As we all are aware that Naga Peace process is in a very crucial situation. Therefore Naga leaders need a compact skill conflict management training relevant to Naga context rather than an emotional imposition from their own perspective. Therefore, if such Conflict Transformation training is required, I will be happy to spare my time. Yanbemo Lotha, Pastor, Lotha Baptist Church, Dimapur.

Nepotism: Such a strong force to crucify even Jesus?

P

eople all over the world are in the second week of Lent in solidarity with the Christ of God and his passion to save the sinners. The sinners tried their best to eliminate their Savior. The sinners conspired, collaborated their evil tactics to do away with him because he was the Truth. Tom Houston, in his ‘Characters around the Cross’ characterizes Caiaphas the incumbent high priest and Annas, his father-in-law who Caiaphas had just succeeded , being entangled in nepotism of high order. For, all through the time Jesus was tried, condemned and crucified, Caiaphas as the high priest was the chief actor behind the scenes as well as on the stage. Both Annas and Caiaphas were Sadducees who did not believe in the Resurrection and so made a strong case with that belief in condemning Jesus. Annas was appointed as the high priest by the Roman authority in AD 7, but his son Eleazer replaced him. Eleazer had to dance to his father’s tune only. Eleazer was also deposed after two years but Caiaphas, was appointed and he officiated all through the trial and condemnation of Jesus. Even after Caiaphas tenure ended in A.D.37 Tom

points out that four more sons of Annas were to succeed Caiaphas consecutively. This highest parliament of the Jews and the political machinery of the Romans on the Jews became a family parliament. The family even moved the court room from the traditional place to the house of the high priest in the market. This high office of the priests was held consecutively by the five sons and the son-in-law of Annas (roughly the first 60 years of the Christian Era). Annas’ family was not only wealthy but also well united, strong that they could grease even the strong hands of the Romans who had the authority to appoint or depose the high priest. The temple business that made Jesus angry was a very solid source of income for the priest’s family. Tom quotes the Talmud, that great Jewish book, where a curse on Annas family is recorded, “Woe to the sons of Annas, themselves high priests, their sons treasurers, their sons-in-law assistant treasurers, while their servants beat the people with sticks”. We can imagine the harsh condition which was behind the condemnation and crucifixion of Jesus. That was nepotism. The word nepotism is said to have originated from the Latin

word, nepotes, meaning ‘nephew’ in English. This nepotism is a pandemic all over the world and in some cultures the practice is called “brotherization” it is said. This term would make this practice clearer to many non English speaking communities except that it may sound like gender exclusive. It certainly includes women. We should see that a common institution is not brotherized, a government facility is not brotherized, because the rational law, the law of the land itself is for justice and equity. Moreover, have not the spiritual ideals inspired and formulated the Constitutions? For that matter, the church should never be brotherized in terms of both genderization of the ministers or using the church as employment centre for the family. The church accuses the government of nepotism while at times committing that same sin within the church. This is said here with due respect to those few who do not commit this sin. The church should be staffed not following dynastic principle but by much prayers, seeking the direction of the Spirit. We have seen that the family of Annas and Caiaphas the high priest family snatched all the posts and the re-

sources of the Temple. Sadly, for the security of this brotherized system, for hoarding all the Temple resources by that family, for safeguarding their parochial belief (such as the negation of the Resurrection by the priestly family) Jesus was crucified by perversion of justice, as the prophet Isaiah foretold (Is.53:8). The Government and its laws are God’s instruments for maintaining peace, justice, and equity for all people. Humans at times grease the Government machinery for functioning smoothly to their favor. There are also times when the governments decide to remain silent. This is because most governments of the world are run on democratic principle and when the evil becomes majority the governments are thus voted down. While nepotism in its constructive level can be practiced it should never snatch or hoard facilities and resources of the rightful persons thus depriving them. Caring for the immediate family members is the obligation of all but in the process it should not break the law of love and equity. If nepotism in civil societies is considered bad it should be considered worse in the Church. Ezamo Murry 5th Mile, Dimapur

T

he name NAGA is used for a group of inhabitants of a mountainous region of Northeast India and Myanmar (Burma). There is no generic term for the tribal groups as a whole. Actually the name or term “NAGA” was applied to this group of people by the neighbouring dwellers of the plains. According to Naga legend, this term was derived from the Burmese word "No-ka" meaning people with pierced earlobes. 'No' Means ear pierced or to make a hole in or through, in Kachin language. It is spoken by the Kachins of Burma. Therefore description of the tribal neighbor may have derived from the Burmese words "No-ka," meaning Pierced ear. This theory is supported by the Naga legend. Long time ago there was a war between Assam ruler and the people of Burma. At the end of the fierce war there was total destruction. As a result this battle ground was named `Saphamati' meaning 'Cleared place' in Assamese language. Finally they made a truce so that each side could identify their own stained warriors. Thus the Burmese identified and counted the bodies by 'No-ka' meaning pierced earlobes. There are Burmese Nagas who are akin to the Nagas of India. Both groups are hill people living in villages on mountain ridges. Some writers even empathically claimed that the word 'Nag' (cobra) in Sanskrit, therefore, the word 'Naga' must have derived from this source. However, as far as I know, Nagas do not worship snakes. This is what Verrier Elwin has to say on this subject. It Is the greatest mistake is connect them with this snake worshipers. 'Nag Bungsus' of India. Neither Nagas or Manipuri's, or this worship, or have any traditions connected with it, and any snake, cobra (nag) or otherwise, would receive small mercy at their hands." There are various theories and suggestions presented by writers and scholars trying to pinpoint the origin of the term "NAGA." After researching in-depth on this subject, I have come to the conclusion to agree with the explanation given by Aglaja Stirn and Peter van Ham on the term "NAGA" and origin and migration of our people. This presentation on these issues come closest to our tradition oral history as presented by forefathers. The term Naga was actually applied to these highlanders by the dwellers of the plains. It may have derived from the Burmese word No-ka people with pierced earlobes. Or, the Assamese word 'noga'-naked.', in Sanskrit literature such as the Vedas and the Mahabharata, it means "golden-skinned people named the kiratas are said to have roamed the sub-Himalayan region "kiratas," refers to all non-Aryan people of Indo-Mongolaid stock, whether the Naga in particular were intended is not clear. The Nagas area part of the wide scattering of the Mongolian people found in areas as diverge as China, the Arctic and Amazon. They began to spread through South-east Asia approximately 12,000 years ago, possibly from northern China, and seems to have assimilated element of Australoid and Negrito populations. This is seen in certain aspects of Naga culture: tools, megalethic stone settings, forked wooden posts, belief in soul matter residing in the head- as well as in physical features. Eg. Small size woolly hair. Cultural and social parallels exist between Naga and Indonesian and oceanic societies. Yet Naga language show no Austro Asiatic or Austronesian traces. The Naga themselves have their own generally mythological stories of origin. Although some related to definite geographical localities indicated by local landmarks such as mountains, hills of arrangements.” 1. Aglaja Stern and Peter Van Ham. The Hidden World of the Nagas, living traditions in Northern India and Murma Munich, Prestd, 203. P. 32 Nagaland is the strategic Eastern Frontier State of India. This mountainous region is the home of a multitude of tribal population of mongoloid race. This region was ruled by Myanmar (Burma) from 1819-1826, when the British began annexing its hill areas. Within this region there was a strip of mountainous area known as the no man's land." During the World War II, the American pilots overflow this particular region an route to Chungking, China, and they used the term "over the hump," case in point, on August 2, 1943, C-46 plane with "special cargo" of a team of American and Chinese Officials, Eric Sevareid of CBS War correspondent and American soldiers crash-landed between India and Burma while flying over the hump in" "no man's land” to Chungking, China. The 20 year old pilot. Flight Officer Harry Neveu was the brave pilot. His daughter lane came to see me in 2004 while I was working at Emory University in Atlanta. This famous meeting was filmed under the title "Meeting of the daughters" and aired on the leading TV programme 5 times under the TV main Topic "Antique Road show FYI" in America. My college friends started calling me after 50 years. It was a great blessing and fun to be in touch with so many of them. Now I can send my newsy yearly letter to all of them via e-mail. I thank God from the bottom of my heart for such priceless blessings. While working in France as a member of the labour corps to serve British Government, the Nagas of different tribes began to realize the benefit of this united force. Soon after the end of World War II, the idea of Independence germinated and slowly grew into an obsession among the various Naga tribal leaders. By the early 1947, even the High School students supported the national leaders by organizing demonstrations. The Nagas differ basically from the main population of the plains which helped them to realized the Instance of forming separate Naga State. In the 1950s, Naga Independent movement and gue-

rilla warfare developed into a full-blown underground warfare fighting for freedom and greater Nagaland that would unite all the Naga tribes. Such activities for independence from India was rarely reported. Over the years, thousands of Nagas have been killed along with the Indian soldiers. The Nagas differ basically from the main population of the plains, which helped them to preserve their own ancient culture and tradition. Due to the long unbroken isolation of the region, sandwiched between Myanmar (Burma) and the mainland of India, it remained untouched by the Hinduism, Buddhism or Islam. This remote comer of the world, largely remained unknown even to the average or ordinary Indians of further stretches of the country. However, since the early 1940s, this area has been a pinch point Historical origins of the Nagas without a recorded history, and with very little archeological evidence, It is extremely difficult to trace the origins of Nagas. In the second century A.D. the famous Egyptian astronomer and geographer, Claudius Ptolemy identified on one of his maps a place called "Nanga logai," which was located in an area of the Indian sub-continent roughly equivalent to the Naga Hills! The name "NAGA" is used for a group of inhabitants of a mountainous region of Northeast India and Myanmar (Burma). There is no given term for the tribal group as a whole. The term/name "Nag" was actually applied to these group of people by the neighbouring dwellers of the plains. According to Nagas of Nagaland legend the term Naga was derived from the Burmese word "No-ka" meaning people with pierced earlobes. There are various theories and suggestions presented by scholars and writers trying to pinpoint the origin of the term "NAGA". After researching in-depth on this subject and as a person of Chang tribe, I have come to the conclusion to agree with the explanation given by Aglaja Stirn and Peter van Ham on the term Naga, and their origin and migration of our people. Their presentation on these issues came closest to our traditional oral history as presented by our forefathers. WHO ARE THE NAGAS? The Nagas were formerly known mainly as warriors and headhunters, but today they are making rapid progress In every field of development, and specialty in education. The name 'NAGA' was not in general use among the Nagas until the early Independent movement of India when the people became aware of the importance of a generic name to encompass the different tribal people of the whole region starting with the Naga National movement all the tribes began to use Naga to identify themselves as the people of Nagaland. The impetus grew and people began to take pride in the new found generic name NAGA when they travel beyond Nagaland. However, deep down in their hearts the people of different tribes will rather address themselves according to the tribal identification rather than the generic term Naga. I will identify myself as a NAGA when I am in another state. When I am in a foreign country I identify as an Indian, but when I am speaking to a church organization I identify as a Naga and explain about the Nagas when I am another State In India I'll identify as Chang tribe. DESCRIPTION OF NAGA CHARACTER IN GENERAL Dr. Joseph Puthenpenakal describes the Nagas after observing them for nine years: "their extra ordinary capacity for dialogue and their whole hearted commitment to what they perceive as true. But this inborn ability for dialogue and love for truth have not been utilized in any considerable manner for the cause of Christian Unity and united proclamation of the Good news “…A Naga by nature is one who is ever eager to know things, it is for this that He discusses problem first as home then at the level of his clan, then in the village and in the Level of his clan, then in the village and In the meetings of The representative of his entire tribe. At each level anyone present has full freedom so express his views and to ask questions. SERVICES RENDERED BY THE NAGAS DURING THE WORLD WARS During the World War I the British Government recruited 2,000 Nagas representing the various tribes to a labour Corps, and sent them to France. The Sumis responded particularly well, but the Angamis did not contribution. The Corps was composed of Semas sent 1,000 Lothas sent 400 Rengmas sent 200 Aos sent 200 Changs and Others 200 -------------------2,000

My grandfather, Paramount Chief Sipongchu was the leader of the Eastern Labour Corps. Nagas use the term GERMAN TAWA for WWI. Throughout the fighting of the Second World War, the Nagas remained loyal to the British but also rendered this valuable assistance. They provided coolies, passed in the evacuation of the wounded, and harassed the Japanese in many ways. The help rendered by the Nagas during these critical years was acknowledged by Field Marshal William Slim In his book “Defeat into Victory,” where he spoke of “the gallant Nagas whole loyalty, even in the most depressing times of the invasion never faltered.” Achilla Imlong Erdican Duncan road, Dimapur

ew writers — certainly none known mainly for a single work of fiction — have sparked a massive outpouring of grief and affection like that heard across the nation Friday. But Nelle Harper Lee wasn’t your average writer. And “To Kill a Mockingbird” was not just another novel. Lee, who died in her sleep at the age of 89, wrote a book that — more than a half-century later — remains one of the most beloved and inspiring works ever. The simple tale of life in a small southern Alabama town in the 1930s — which turns into an explosive drama about race, rape and a young girl’s pain as she watches her lawyer dad fight a righteous battle he can’t hope to win — has sold 40 million copies since 1960, won a Pulitzer Prize and was made into a memorable film. Lee based the book’s hero, Atticus Finch, on her own father; its narrator, Scout, on herself and many of the other characters on her neighbors in tiny Mon-

Michael Clarke out for 'rusty' 48 in comeback club match

SyDNey, FebRUaRy 20(aFP):FormerAustralia captain Michael Clarke scored what he described as a 'rusty' 48 in his comeback match in Sydney club cricket on Saturday. Clarke, 34, who bowed out of the game in August after the disastrous Ashes series in England, was dropped twice early batting at No. 3 for his old team Western Suburbs against Randwick-Petersham. Clarke was dropped at second slip before he had scored and later was put down again at second slip whileon30inhis135-minute innings, which included seven fours. "It was nice, I enjoyed it. I batted for a good length of time and the body feels pretty good," Clarke told reporters at the ground. "I didn't really have too many goals to be honest, it was more just to come back and play, walk out to the middle and as you would've seen there was certainly a bit of rust there."

Mourinho claims interest from top clubs

LONDON, FebRUaRy 20 (IaNS): Veteran football manager Jose Mourinho has claimed that he is not looking for a new job at the moment, although several clubs are pursuing him. "My next club? I really do not know, but one thing is certain - I love football and I will return with the same passion and ambition I've always had," Mourinho was quoted as saying by Italian newspaper La Stampa. "Right now I have respect for every coach at every club. I'm not looking for a club, but there are clubs that are looking for me," the former Real Madrid manager said. Media reports in Italy have suggested Mourinho could return to Inter Milan, with whom he won the treble in 2010, as current head coach Roberto Mancini is struggling to secure a top-three finish in Serie A. But Mourinho insisted he has no plans to return to the San Siro dugout. "There is one thing I want to clarify -- I will not be directing things over there next season. Inter already have a project that belongs to Roberto Mancini and Erick Thohir," Mourinho said.

McCullum smashes fastest HCHSS Golden Jubilee Marathon Race held test century to rescue NZ CHRISTCHURCH, FebRUaRy 20 (ReUTeRS): Brendon McCullum blasted the fastest test century to rescue New Zealand before Australia were reduced to 57 for one by the close of day one of the second test on Saturday. The New Zealand captain scored a brilliant 145, with his first 100 runs coming from 54 balls, as the hosts were dismissed for 370 after tea at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. Trent Boult then had the dangerous David Warner caught at second slip by Martin Guptill for 12, before Joe Burns (27) and Usman Khawaja (18) saw the Australians through to the close. New Zealand had no right to be in the position they were at stumps after being sent in to bat by Steve Smith on a green wicket and reduced to 32 for three inside 20 overs. "After losing the toss anything could have happened," McCullum told reporters. "The wicket had plenty in it all day and we decided the best form of defence was for us to try to attack. "It's not always going to

come off but today we got a bit of luck along the way and as we sit here at the end of day one we're firmly in the test match." McCullum, playing his 101st and final test with his team trailing 1-0 in the two-match series, led the counter-attack that began before lunch and reached its bludgeoning best in the afternoon session. The height of the on-

slaught came after McCullum was caught in the gully by an acrobatic Mitchell Marsh when on 39, only to be recalled as television replays showed fast bowler James Pattinson had overstepped. Already bristling with aggression, the second life flicked a switch for McCullum and he went into allout attack mode, reaching his century 24 balls later

with his 16th boundary. He needed two fewer balls than the 56 that West Indies' Viv Richards required for his century against England in Antigua in 1986 and Pakistan's Misbah-ul-Haq took against Australia in Abu Dhabi in 2014. McCullum also hit four sixes in his first 100 runs, his first before lunch securing outright ownership of the record for career sixes in test cricket. He had started the day tied with Australia's Adam Gilchrist on 100. He was eventually dismissed when Nathan Lyon took a good catch in the deep to end a 179-run partnership with Anderson, who reached his fourth test half-century from 39 balls and was dismissed for 72 shortly before tea. Lyon grabbed two wickets after tea, with wicketkeeper BJ Watling the last man out for 58. "Credit to Baz in the way he played," Lyon said. "He rode his luck. I thought as a bowling unit we toiled quite hard and as a fielding unit we took a lot of good catches. "It's a big positive to bowl them out on day one."

FA Cup holders Arsenal frustrated by dogged Hull

LONDON, FebRUaRy 20 (ReUTeRS): Holders Arsenal's long unbeaten run in the FA Cup continued but they were frustrated by stubborn Championship leaders Hull City on Saturday, drawing 0-0 in a dreary fifth-round tie at the Emirates Stadium. Arsene Wenger's side piled on late pressure but could not find a way past the massed ranks of Hull's defence and will need a replay in their quest to become the first club in the modern era to win the competition three years in a row. Despite overwhelming possession, the closest Arsenal came to breaking the deadlock was Joel Campbell's free kick that was tipped against the post by Hull's Eldin Jakupovic and Theo Walcott was also denied by the inspired goalkeeper. Morris repeats dose as South Africa win thriller

CaPe TOWN, FebRUaRy 20 (ReUTeRS): Chris Morris again proved the scourge of England's bowlers after smashing 14 off the final over to power South Africa to a thrilling three-wicket victory in the first Twenty20 at Newlands on Friday. The visitors, though, had a chance to tie the scores and send the match to a 'super over' when paceman Reece Topley fluffed a straightforward opportunity to run out Kyle Abbott off the last delivery. Having earlier compiled a modest total of 134 for eight, England strangled the run-rate on a wicket that both sides found difficult to score on and looked set to win after leaving South Africa needing 15 runs from Topley's last over. Number eight batsman Morris, however, clubbed a six and a four to lead the home team over the line. The all-rounder also hit a swashbuckling half-century in the fourth game of the one-day series last Friday to help his side

scramble a one-wicket triumph. England were put in to bat in the opening match of a series of two Twenty20s and blazed their way to 50 in six overs for the loss of opener Jason Roy (15). The in-form Alex Hales (27) was then caught by JP Duminy at deep square-leg, despite a sickening collision with a charging Kagiso Rabada that thankfully left both fielders unhurt, and his dismissal sparked a slump to 81 for six. Leg-spinner Imran Tahir was the chief destroyer for South Africa as he equalled career-best figures of four for 21. Jos Buttler top-scored with an unbeaten 32 from 30 balls. Captain Faf du Plessis (25) led South Africa's reply from the front but excellent bowling spells from Chris Jordan (3-23) and Moeen Ali (2-22) appeared to swing the contest England's way until Morris produced his late cameo. The second game in the series, which is serving as a warm-up for the World Twenty20 in India next month, is in Johannesburg on Sunday.

Champions League last 16 first leg at home against Barcelona, Arsenal made nine changes from the team who beat Leicester City last week to move to within two points of the top of the Premier League.

But promotion-chasing Hull went one better, making 10 alterations to their lineup from last week's draw with Brighton and Hove Albion. Both Wenger and opposite number Steve Bruce face an unwanted replay, though,

after a frustrating afternoon. Chelsea host Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur face Crystal Palace on Sunday. Third tier Shrewsbury Town entertain Manchester United on Monday.

Car picture puts Bendtner offside with Wolfsburg

beRLIN, FebRUaRy 20 (aFP): Danish badboy Nicklas Bendtner has fallen offside at VW-sponsored Wolfsburg, and will cop a fine, after breaking club rules by posting a picture of him climbing into a luxury Mercedes. The picture, posted on social media site Instagram, shows Bendtner climbing into the vehicle with the text: "On my way to another session". But with Volkswagen being the Bundesliga club's main backer, Wolfsburg bosses have taken a dim view of the Danish forward's decision to use a picture featuring a rival manufacturer's car. "We have our rules, one of those being that you must pay attention to how you are photographed in public," said Wolfsburg's director of sport Klaus Allofs. "The rules are not new." Bendtner was left out of the match squad for Wolfsburg's 3-2 win at Gent on Wednesday in the last 16, first-leg of the Champions League, but is expected to be on the bench for Saturday's Bundesliga match at Hertha Berlin.
