boost in Nagaland state Morung Express news Dimapur | February 24
Among the slew of developmental projects and schemes for the North East and Nagaland announced by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, during the Hornbill Festival last year, two centrally sponsored projects have finally landed in Nagaland. Union Minister of State for Textiles, Santosh Gangwar, on Tuesday laid the foundation stones of the Apparel & Garment Manufacturing Centre and the Weavers’ Service Centre (Toluvi Village) here at DIC Complex, 6 Mile, in presence of officials of Ministry of Textiles and ministers, legislators and officials of the state government. The inauguration of the Apparel & Garment Manufacturing Centre in Nagaland is the first among the eight NE states including Sikkim as promised by the PM and will provide employment to at least 1200 educated unemployed youths. The Union Minister noted that the NE has a unique textile culture, which can be showcased to the rest of the world. He also expressed delight to learn that Naga youth have a penchant in fashion designing. Thanking the Nagaland Government for allotting the land for the centres, the minister assured that infrastructure will be completed in three months time so that they become functional by July-August. Gangwar said the centres would provide gainful employment to the youth and boost local economy. He further called upon the people to work unit-
edly to develop the garment sector in the region. Secretary, Union Ministry of Textiles, SK Panda, said that though NE handloom products have been a matter of pride, yet they have failed to kick off due to lack of infrastructure and other factors. He said the Apparel & Garment Manufacturing Centre would serve various purposes including imparting skills, production of fashion apparel and also tag handloom with tourism. Nagaland minister for Power, Kipili Sangtam, and Lok Sabha MP, Neiphiu Rio, also spoke on the occasion. About the Apparel & Garment Manufacturing Centre Scheme The scheme, entirely funded by Ministry of Textiles under NERTPS, will augment the capacity in the NE for unleashing entrepreneurship and creating skilled workforce pool for the apparel sectors. It aims to create an integrated workspace and linkage based on entrepreneurial ecosystem for the start ups. Apparel manufacturing centres, having three production units, will be set up in each of the NE state, with the objective of promoting entrepreneurship, generating employment and creating skilled workforce by training local population in the state. The scheme also envisages to address migration of youth to other states and to diversify the textile initiative by creating organized apparel units and to enable the domestic handloom of NE to integrate with the fashion industry.
