eci initiates inquiry into the dispute in nPf party ECI says “no interim direction recognising either of the parties as the NPF under the Symbols Order or any person as its President can be given at this stage”
DIMAPUR, FEBRUARY 4 (MExN): The Election Commission of India (ECI) today informed that, on consideration of the matter, it has initiated a “process of enquiry” into the “dispute in the party,” referring to the Naga Peoples’ Front (NPF). The ECI also said that it will not take cognizance of any disciplinary action against any member of the NPF Party by “either of the parties to the dispute,” till the dispute is decided by the Commission. In a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer, Nagaland, dated February 4, 2015, the ECI stated that at this stage, it can give no interim direction recognizing either of the parties as the NPF under the Symbols Order or any person as its President. Further, “The matter of recognizing any in this combination photo, a series of images taken from video provided by TVBs show a commercial airplane clipping an elevated roadway just before it careened into a person as the Chief Whip of the river in Taipei, Taiwan, Wednesday, February 4. provisions of the Symbols Order for the Commission to issue any instructions in this regard,” stated Secretary to the ECI, Varinder Kumar, in the letter. The ECI also informed that the parties to the dispute have been given time till February 16, 2015, to submit their written submissions and supporting documents. With this, the Dr. Shurhozelie led NPF has construed the letter to mean that “Dr. Shurhozelie and his team continues to be at the helm of affairs in the official NPF.” The Noke Wangnao led NPF, however, read the letter to “clearly mean” that the ECI “no longer recognises Dr. Shurhozelie as the President of the NPF.” Meanwhile, the Governor of Nagaland has summoned a special session of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly on February 5.

DIMAPUR, FEBRUARY 4 (MExN): “The greatest enemy of the Nagas are Naga themselves and they themselves are their destructor,” stated Y Wangtin Naga today. In a statement drawn from personal opinion, Wangtin noted that the “one time tallest and unmatchable Naga issue” has been reduced to “confusion, fragmentation and groupism” by “selfish leaders” through “selfishness, hostile attitude, antagonism and self-justification.” Reminding the people that the Naga issue is not “factional” but between “Naga and India, Naga and Myanmar,” Wangtin maintained that “our leaders should stand collectively.” They should instruct their followers to “come closer with other fellow Nagas by removing the walls of factionalism and our great leaders should compromise their difficulties for Naga unity as without unity nothing can happen.”
He recalled the risk and challenges taken by the Quakers, American Baptist Churches and Baptist World Alliance to bring the factions together—“they have succeeded their missions but the Nagas failed them.” Wangtin accorded equal honour and respect
Y Wangtin Naga invites opinion of patriotic Nagas on political issue to the Forum for Naga Reconciliation headed by Dr. Wati Aier for “their tireless services to bring Naga unity.” “But all their sacrifices have been murdered by the Naga political groups who always justified their stance and position,” he stated, blaming the different factions for their negative approach towards the FNR “without knowing their fragile task and vulnerable position.” Wangtin wondered if the Na-
Reimagining the North East
NEw DElhI, FEBRUARY 4 (MExN): The Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research, Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi today kick-started a three day International Conference on ‘Reimagining India’s North East: Networks, Narratives and Negotiations,’ which will be held till February 6. The conference is a continuation of the last two international conferences which were earlier held at the University of Gottingen in 2011 and the University of Vienna in 2013. The conference aims to explore themes and issues such as “identity, difference and belonging, contested narratives, migration, cultural transformation and cultural identity and challenging the idea of mainstream.” Terming the North East region as “one of the most ethnically diverse regions with overlapping ethnicities, cultures and colonial history,” the conference stated that people with roots in this region are also located beyond the borders demarcated at the end of the colonial rule. These borders were sites of significant migration related to work, political change and the creation of new nations which in turn led to societal conflicts. The conference will discuss how ethnic groups have resorted to stressing their ‘uniqueness’ and have contested, revived, created, negotiated and renegotiated their ethnic identity, with overlapping claims to land ownership
gas should “genuinely acknowledge” to the Government of India (GoI) that the “present cease-fire is a child-play game un-acceptable to the Nagas?” Inviting the opinion of patriotic Nagas, Wangtin asked if Nagas should express their “deepest distress and anguish” by parting away from the present ceasefire? Maintaining that the NSCN (K) can go to any extent to salvage the Naga issue, he also stated that any action of NSCN (K) will belittle the position of NSCN (IM) with the GoI. Which is why, he suggested, “We must collectively study the position of present cease-fire and the attitude of the GoI.” Further, “We must seriously study the amount of GoI’s seriousness towards our problem and must act accordingly leaving our domestic issue aside and looking forwards to keep our issue alive till the whole World knows it.” Full text on page 5
and resources turning into major conflicts. This, in parallel with the rise of vocal civil society groups who have been at the forefront of social reconciliation and peace building. A highlight of the conference will be the presence of over 60 young scholars from Europe and other parts of India who will be presenting on topics as varied as ‘Rumour, Rhetoric, Rebellion in Assam, Where have all the bawdy songs gone?’ ‘The politics of censorship in Ao folklore’ and ‘Cross-border movement, conflict and regional relations, North East India and Southwest China.’ The inaugural session today saw release of two new books published by the Centre titled ‘Elected Women Representatives in Panchayati Raj’ and ‘Climate Change in the Eastern Himalaya: Impact on Livelihoods, Growth and Poverty.’ Over the next few days, the Centre will also host its annual cultural evening during the conference which will include performances from the Brahmaputra Bihu group, Footwings and Lou Majaw from Shillong. The conference will close with a special session ‘A Thousand Years in a Lifetime,’ a conversation between Prof. Sanjoy Hazarika, Prof. Imtiaz Ahmad, Prof. Ramachandra Guha and Prof. Udayon Misra, chaired by Dr. Mahesh Rangarajan, Director of Nehru Memorial Library.

seven truths About Cockfights 1.A cockfight is always an all-male affair. 2. A cockfight can continue for very long, for neither fighting cock easily gives up. 3. A cockfight is always an entertaining spectacle for onlookers. 4. If unchecked and unstopped in time, a cockfight can turn bloody and deadly. 5. Professional fighting cocks are usually owned, bred, and prepared by their respective owners who have stakes in the sport. 6. In professional cockfighting, the winning cock is usually considered the authentic, pure-breed cock. 7. Professional cockfighting is illegal and outlawed in many places. But in some unique places, lawmakers are themselves involved in the sport. In exceptionally rare cases and places, a cockfight is even organised on the floor of the legislative assembly! NEw YoRk, FEBRUARY 4 (IANS): People who experience emotional and physical abuse during their childhood are likely to end up earning less and not having enough healthy food for their children, research has found. The findings that suggest a strong relationship between exposure to adverse childhood experiences and household food insecurity among mothers of young children, adds a new dimension to the study of poverty. “The causes and realities of hunger and poverty are complicated and difficult to unravel. We are seeing one component of them is that, for many people, experiences of hunger have trauma and adversity at their core,” said lead author of the study Mariana Chilton, associate professor at Drexel University in the US. The study involved 31 moth-
ers who experienced deprivation, abuse, violence and neglect during their childhood. The results point clearly to a value in considering adverse childhood experiences as a contributor to food insecurity, the researchers noted. Higher scores on the adverse childhood experiences survey, for instance, were significantly associated with the severity of participants’ household food insecurity. In interviews, the study participants relayed their perceptions of how emotional and physical abuse in childhood affected their lives, including physical health, school performance and ability to maintain employment, all factors directly linked to household income and ability to afford enough healthy food for their own children. The study appeared in the journal Public Health Nutrition.
Made mistake, but don’t play it up: Modi says on ‘immigrants’ goof-up
NEw DElhI, FEBRUARY 4 (IANS): A day after the BJP drew flak over a “typographical error” of referring to people from the northeast as “immigrants” in its Vision Document, Prime Minister Narendra Modi defended his party and decried attempts to rake up the issue for political mileage. “Attempts are being made to provoke people from the northeast... a mistake was made and the party accepted it,” Modi said addressing an election rally in Ambedkar Nagar in south Delhi. “No one should play with the unity of the country for political benefits,” he said. Modi said he has visited the northeastern states many times and the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government would develop the region “more than what has happened in the past 60 years”. The prime minister’s comments came as the BJP termed the issue an “inadvertent mistake” and regretted it. “Due to an inadvertent mistake the word immigrant was used in the Vision Document. The party regrets this,” BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said
Wednesday. “The word ‘immigrant’ was used in the heading, but the paragraph ahead used the word migrant,” he said at a press conference. “Our brothers and sisters from the northeast are proud citizens of India wherever they are. The BJP walks an extra mile to ensure their safety and this mistake is regretted,” said Prasad, who is also the communication and information technology minister. BJP spokesperson M.J. Akbar also expressed regret over the error. “We regret deeply and I want to reassure all our brothers and sisters of the northeast that everyone from there in Delhi is as valuable, as important to the BJP as any other citizen of Delhi,” Akbar said. On Tuesday, the BJP released its Vision Document for the Feb 7 assembly election where a section said: “North eastern immigrants to be protected.” The Congress demanded that the BJP apologise to the people of the northeast. BJP leader and Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, addressing a press conference, clarified that it was a “typographical error”, but
said the BJP was the only party to mention creation of a separate northeast cell in its Vision Document. She hit out at the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party, saying that while the two parties were criticising the BJP for the error, the parties had no provision for northeast people in their manifestos. The reference to people from the northeast in the Vision Document found mention as there have been many attacks on people from the region in Delhi. An edited version of the Vision Document was published on the BJP website Wednesday with the word “immigrants” removed as well as the reference to “migrants” in the subsequent elaboration. The heading was changed to “People from the North East in Delhi to be protected”. “Special cells in all police stations and special 24-hour helpline numbers to be set up for the protection of the north eastern people living in Delhi,” the edited version said. “To safeguard the students of N.E. (northeast) origin, special guardianships will be arranged with local families for them,” it added.
