It also informed that an enquiry committee has already been constituted under the chairmanship of Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Mokokchung. Members of civil society organizations are also included in the committee, the DIPR report stated adding that the committee is thoroughly investigating into the issue. Meanwhile, stakeholders have been requested not to spread misinformation as it will hamper the ongoing investigation process.

New DelhI, February 6 (ageNcIes): Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said he expects states to increase spending on infrastructure and poverty alleviation schemes as the 14th Finance Commission has devolved higher funds to them. “We expect that those states whose resources have been increased after the implementation of the 14th Finance Commission will spend further on infrastructure creation and anti-poverty programmes since their income have increased considerably,” Jaitley told reporters here. Several states, in their pre-budget meeting with Jaitley, sought higher allocation in the upcoming budget for implementing Pay Commission recommendations as well as under centrally-sponsored schemes. “The states have discussed their own resources and each one of them is competing for higher resources, higher investment and they are all geared up to fight this environment of global slowdown so that India remains an economy which is on the move,” he said. The 14th Finance Commission had last year recommended a record 10 per cent increase in the states’ share in the Union taxes to 42 per cent, which has been accepted by the Centre. The 7th Pay Commission in November recommended increase in remuneration of about one crore government employees and pensioners which is estimated to impose an additional burden of Rs 1.02 lakh crore in 2016-17. The new pay scales, subject to acceptance by government, will come into effect from January 1, 2016. “As far as central government is concerned we would like to cooperate with every state, and as the growth of states increases, the national growth will also increase,” Jaitley said in his opening remarks.

Eradicating poverty is more important than defining poverty. (REUTERS)

He also said that one of challenging area is agriculture which suffered in last two years due to inadequate monsoon. “It’s been a tradition to meet the states to discuss the budget and other economic issues. They gave their suggestions for more resources” Jaitley told reporters after the meeting, that was called ahead of the national budget for the next fiscal, due on February 29. “Most states suggested that they have been concentrating on antipoverty programmes, particularly on the agricultural sector,” he said and assured the states of more funding by the Centre. “Resources of states have also increased after the 14th Finance Commission. We want states to use these for anti-poverty schemes,” he said after the two-hour long meeting, adding: “We also hope they will spend further on infrastructure creation.” Speaking to reporters, West Ben-

gal Finance Minister Amit Mitra also said that the central government must keep its promise of releasing more funds to states. “The last budget had promised 10 percent more devolution to the states,” he added. Tamil Nadu Finance Minister O. Panneerselvam said his state was particularly hit by some of the Finance Commission’s recommendations. “We have been adversely affected due to this horizontal sharing formula,” he said, drawing a distinction between vertical allocations where states can spend the allocated money as they desire, as opposed to transfers based on parameters like poverty levels and fiscal prudence. During the meeting, the states also demanded early release of the long pending compensation for phasing out of central sales tax (CST) and raising state’s borrowing limit as per the recommendation of 14th Finance Commission. NNagaDAO demand political action, Collective engagement is the to address Naga conflicts release of grant for HIV/AIDS program • way CNA says they should have been in-

DIMaPur, February 6 (MexN): Network of Nagaland Drugs and AIDS Organisation (NNagaDAO) on Saturday pulled up the Nagaland State government for its lack of political action in the fight against HIV/AIDS and related diseases. It expressed anguish over the stark indifference - in not releasing funds meant for HIV/AIDS program for several months which, according to the organization, was lying in the State treasury. A press statement from NNagaDAO president, Abou Mere has voiced fear that the apathy of the State government will seriously hamper the HIV/AIDS program. This may lead to many new infections and create more grave challenges with more health and financial burden in the near future, Mere said. It pointed out that National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) grant

to Nagaland AIDS Control Society (NSACS) was routed through the State exchequer to ensure more transparency, accountability and effective implementation of HIV/ AIDS program in the State. In spite of this, NNagaDAO expressed wonder why “the life saving HIV money is being kept for several months by the State government and in the process denying and weakening HIV intervention and other health programs and putting our people life at risks” Harm reduction commodities (HIV prevention commodities) are getting exhausted in NGOs Drop-In Centres, Mere pointed out. It therefore demanded that the State government immediately release the “fund lying in the State treasury for controlling new HIV transmission and HIV related death.” NNagaDAO has also expressed unhappiness over the tepid ap-

proach of the State AIDS Council which is notably the highest body on HIV/AIDS in the state and headed under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister. It alleged that the DAN III government did not conduct any meeting to take political decision and action to end the communicable diseases (HIV and Hepatitis B and C). “The hopes for ending the communicable diseases depend in large measure of political leadership and action, uninterrupted resources for prevention and treatment program to all who need it,” Mere said. To this, NNagaDAO has called upon the State AIDS Council chairman/Chief Minister to convene the State AIDS Council meeting at the earliest possible so as to ensure achieving desirable epidemic control and treatment for the State.

formed on the Naga Hoho-ENPO peace mission • Wrong approaches may jeopardize the dynamics of Naga movement for self-determination

DIMaPur, February 6 (MexN): Council of Naga Affairs (CNA) has stated that initiative like the recent peace mission of the Naga Hoho (NH) and Eastern Naga People’s Organization (ENPO) to Myanmar to meet NSCN (K) should be extended further through proper collaboration among Nagas from all corners to bring peace and solution for the Nagas. A press statement from CNA, while welcoming the peace initiative undertaken by the two organizations, however termed it unfortunate that for executing such important peace mission in Eastern Naga land, they were not informed. It sought to point out that “Naga affairs in Myanmar are not only of individual or portion of segments” and that the ongoing Naga conflicts can only be addressed through col-

lective engagement by right representatives of Nagas in Myanmar. The press statement asserted that the CNA and another organization namely Naga Tradition and Culture Committee (Yoya) are the only mandated and right bodies to facilitate such missions in Myanmar side. It informed that CNA was formed in 2014 as the civilian representative entity and the mandated body to guide the political, social and economic affairs of the Nagas in Myanmar during a conference of the Naga Nationals. The conference was organized by the Nagas in Myanmar. And since then, the CNA has been actively engaging in affairs of Nagas in Myanmar, the press statement claimed. The CNA also said it was confused on the meeting of NH and ENPO with so-called NSCN-K emissary Kyaw Win Swe, a Burmese while expressing wonder on how a Burmese man became an emissary for the NSCN (K). Such nature of wrong approaches may jeopardize the dynamics of Naga movement for rights to self-determination, a concerned CNA pointed out.

‘Nagaland resource constraint due to change in funding pattern by Centre’ New DelhI, February 6 (NePs): Nagaland Minister for National Highways and Mechanical Engineering, Nuklutoshi has drawn the attention of Union Finance Minister on the “acute resource constraints” faced by State due to the “alteration of funding pattern to Nagaland since 1990.” Attending the Pre-Budget Meeting with Arun Jaitley, Union Finance Minister at Hotel Shangri-la, Ashoka Road on Saturday, Nuklutoshi, who was attending on behalf of the Chief Minister TR Zeliang, informed the Ministry that Nagaland was perhaps the only State which was created out of a “political agreement.” “The agreement pro-

vided special provisions with respect to governance and funding for the State,” Nuklutoshi reminded. He however said the change in the funding pattern to Nagaland since 1990 was not in accordance to the political agreement. Drawing further the attention of the Ministry, Nuklutoshi said Nagaland, Jammu & Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh and some States of the Northeastern region should be treated more special than the other Special Category States. The Nagaland Minister also said that without taking into consideration the Special Status of Nagaland, the 13th Finance Commission had recommended

normative funding to all the Interest Payment and penState restricting salary ex- sion. penditure to 35% of the total “If we are to go on the revenue expenditure, net of basis of the 13thFinance

Commission recommendations, we would have to terminate the services of about 45,000 government

employees, which is not possible,” he pointed out. Although the Government of India had created the special window of Special Central Assistance (untied) to cover the BCR Gap, the distribution of the fund was neither proportionate to the BCR Gap of the State nor sufficient, Nuklutoshi asserted. Because of this, he explained, the Nagaland State, at the close 13th Finance Commission period, ended up with a huge deficit of Rs 1542 crore. The Minister, however, disclosed that the 14th Finance Commission understood the problem faced by the State and “their recommendations are found to be

more realistic as compared with the previous Finance Commissions.” “However, the backlog deficit created during the 13th Finance Commission period is so huge that even the award of the 14th Finance Commission is not sufficient to cover the pending deficit of the State,” he informed the Ministry. He further requested the Government of India to give a one-time grant to waive the deficit to enable the state to focus on developmental activities. Nuklutoshi attended the Pre-Budget meeting with Kikheto Sema, Finance Secretary to Nagaland Government.

Restore rule of law and constitutional rights: ANSAM tells GOI Tahamzam, February 6 (mexN): The All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM), representing the Naga and tribal youth and students in Manipur, has welcomed the public admission of the killing of an unarmed Ch. Sanjit in the heart of Imphal city by Th. Herojit, a senior constable in the Manipur Police Commando. In a press release, ANSAM alleged that the act was carried out on the “order” of his superior officer and “approval” of the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of the Government of Manipur (GoM).

“Th. Herojit has admitted of many other such killings and he is but only one of the many in the Manipur Police Commando/IRB who have been licensed to carry out extra judicial executions by the GoM, without the due process of law,” the student association contended. ANSAM further cited the May 6, 2010 incident in which two unarmed Naga students, Loshou and Chakho, were shot dead at Mao Gate and more than hundred protestors, mostly women folks, were “maimed by bullets and violence”; the August 30, 2014 incident where two

young unarmed Nagas, Mayopam and Ramkashing, were executed at Tangkhul Naga Long ground in Ukhrul, and more than 30 civilians “shot and brutalized”; and the August 31 and September 1, 2015 incidents where seven unarmed defenders of tribal rights of Churachandpur were killed and many “violently incapacitated”. The above killings and violence were committed against Nagas and tribal people protesting against the “hegemony” of the oppressive GoM, the association maintained while also insisting that these in-

stances “speak of the response” of the GoM to constitutional demands and legitimate protest of the tribals in Manipur. Claiming that frequent bombings, fake encounters and killings takes place and is generally accepted as normal in Imphal valley, ANSAM noted that the disturbed area act has been lifted from Imphal by the GoM and developmental programmes and growth of Imphal continues undisturbed by the law and order situation. “But in the Naga and tribal hill districts, which is peaceful, except for state violence

against unarmed tribal protestors, such as those mentioned above, the GoM continues with the Disturbed Area Act/Armed Forces Special Powers and any democratic form of protests by the tribals against injustice and suppression are responded with violence and killings,” ANSAM contended. “Law and order situation is cited as unfavourable reason for development of the hill areas and the gap between the valley and the hills that is perpetuated over the years gets wider,” it stated. “It is important to note that the same force, empowered by

the same GoM operates with impunity in both the Imphal valley and the tribal hills but with different consequences and targeted results on human lives and also on development and social front,” the student body observed. Demanding immediate action from the Government of India in restoring the “rule of law and constitutional rights”, and intervention, as already demanded, with an “alternative arrangement” for the Nagas in Manipur outside the Government of Manipur pending settlement of the Indo-Naga issue, ANSAM insisted that

the Manipur Government, instead of safeguarding the life, property and rights of the citizen, has become the “willful violator” of the fundamental right to life of the people guaranteed under the constitution. Maintaining that the Government of India cannot limit its responsibility to seeking clarification and explanation from the GoM, the apex Naga student body in Manipur stated, “If the Government of India does not intervene then it abdicates its responsibilities as custodian of the constitution and becomes an abettor of constitutional crime.”

Will not allow integration of Nagas: UCM BJP demands white paper on MGNREGS in Manipur Our Correspondent Imphal | February 6

Thousands of people today took part in a mass rally held in Imphal for the ‘Common Future of Manipur’ to “reaffirm and strengthen” the “integrity” of the State. The All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO), Committee of Civil Societies, Kangleipak (CCSK) and United Committee Manipur (UCM) organised the rally, followed by a public meeting at a sports stadium. The participants, who also included students from different schools and colleges, gathered at Thau Ground, Thangmeiband in the morning before starting the rally which ended at the Khuman Lampak Sports Main Stadium. Speakers pledged to “protect the integrity” of Manipur State, “maintain peaceful co-existence” and “stay united and fight together for it in the face of challenges.” In his keynote address, UCM general secretary YK Dhiren Singh condemned the Nagaland assembly for “repeatedly challenging” the “territorial integrity” of Manipur by taking resolutions on Naga integration. “It has been a great threat to the people of Manipur and its territory since the signing of the Ceasefire Agreement between NSCN (IM) and Government of India way back in 1997,” Dhiren said.

He termed as “baseless and unnatural” that the “majority community” in Manipur looks down upon smaller communities in the State. The UCM leader insisted that the Centre has been “made to believe” such allegations by a “handful of individuals working for their own interest.” Dhiren said, “The hope for integration of Pan-Naga family and Supra State for the Nagas will never become true. We’ll not allow integration of Nagas living across the North-eastern region.” Referring to the Naga peace talks, he said the people of Manipur have the right to know the details of the Naga peace Accord signed between the Government of India and NSCN (IM) in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on August 3, 2015. “The Centre should not conceal the Framework Agreement. We thank the Government of India for its serious political contemplation on the Naga problem but it should not take any wrong decision. The Centre needs to respect the people of Manipur too,” he added. Four key resolutions were adopted after the public meet: Integrity of Manipur will be kept intact, policy of divide and rule against communities in Manipur will not be allowed to continue, alienation within different groups will be stopped and any neighbouring State will not be allowed to interfere and threaten the territorial integrity of the State. imphal, February 6 (TNN): A day after the Okram Ibobi Singh government celebrated the successful completion of 10 years of MGNREGS implementation in the state, the opposition BJP has demanded a while paper on the scheme. The saffron party charged the state government with misappropriating huge funds of the national

flagship programme. Though many other states in the country have added more number of work days from the minimum guaranteed 100 days, in Manipur, the number is below 50 days per annum since the last one decade, alleged Manipur unit BJP president and former Union minister Thounaojam Chaoba Singh

during a media conference at the party's Imphal office on Thursday. A huge percentage of the MGNREGS funds was misused by the ministers and senior officials of the Congress government, said Chaoba. Under the supervision of Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi, Union ministers have been visiting the

state every month to provide development funds, but things aren't going on smoothly because of the state government's unsystematic was of functioning, said Chaoba. Citing an example, Chaoba said the state government has failed to provide the necessary land for setting up a sports university which has been sanctioned by the Centre.

Arunachal guv’s ‘motives’ under apex court scrutiny

New Delhi, February 6 (hT): The Supreme Court told dissident Congress MLAs from Arunachal Pradesh on Friday that it would examine if there was a “sinister” or “genuine” motive behind the governor’s decision to shift the assembly session from January 14 to December 16. A constitution bench headed by Justice JS Kehar did not accept the rebel MLAs’ contention that the governor had absolute discretion in changing the

dates, a key event that led to the state into a political crisis before it was put under President’s Rule. “Courts can interfere if there is a perceived sinister motive,” the bench told senior counsel Rakesh Dwivedi. The Congress government in Arunachal was suspended after 14 of its legislators defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party and held a ‘session’ of their own outside the Assembly. They, along with the oppo-

the governor had absolute immunity from judicial review of his actions. But, the bench had another view. “Even assuming the governor had discretionary powers, yet, that may not perhaps justify his action of preponing the assembly session,” it told Dwivedi. “Let us accept for arguments, the governor has a discretion... Is it such an expeditious discretion that a speaker’s power should be curtailed at any point of

US, India in talks to settle Aamir Khan loses Snapdeal contract solar power trade dispute WASHINGTON, FebruAry 6 (reuTerS): The United States and India are in talks that could settle a long-running solar power trade dispute, delaying the announcement of a ruling by the World Trade Organization, an Obama administration official said on Friday. Washington filed the W TO challenge three years ago, claiming that India's national solar power programme illegally discriminated against imported solar panels and related products though its domestic content requirements. The WTO in recent weeks has twice delayed the public announcement of a ruling in the case, rescheduling it for next Wednesday. Indian media reported last August that a WTO dispute settlement panel had confidentially notified Washington and New Delhi that it would rule against India in the case. U.S. Trade Representative spokesman Andrew Bates declined to confirm any details of the WTO's intentions, but said the talks were aimed at reaching an out-of-court resolution before any public

Online shopping may not be as green as we think NeW yOrk, FebruAry 6 (IANS): Who does not love to sit at home in sweatpants and shop online? But it may not be as environment friendly option as often people think, new research suggests. Scientists have found that the total number of vehicles miles travelled has not decreased at all with the growth of online shopping. Home shopping has a greater impact on the transportation sector than the public might think in a study published in the International Journal of Sustainable Development and World Ecology. Though it's true that e-stores require less space and use less energy, online shopping puts more delivery trucks on the roads, which translates into more wear-and-tear on pave-

ments and increased environmental pollution, said lead author Arde Faghri from University of Delaware in the US. "We found that the total number of vehicles miles travelled has not decreased at all with the growth of online shopping," Faghri added. The study included data collection through a survey to identify shopping behaviour and summary of the survey results by product category, followed by simulation and analysis. "The increase in online shopping also affects land use patterns such as the number and size of stores in large shopping malls with vast parking spaces, as well as changes in labour markets, with, for example, less demand for sales personnel and more for truck drivers," Faghri explained.

These changes signify the intention of the government to promote domestic manufacture of these items as imports would now become more expensive, Mani said. REVELATION ABOUT Guwahati: Two decades ago and now EARTHQUAKE Natalia Ningthoujam

O

n the 2 February, 2016 night at around 2:00 O'clock in the morning, the Lord revealed to me through vision/trance certain things concerning the intensity of earthquake which is to be taken in the North East region in the near future. That through intensity of earthquake so many houses and people were seen being destroyed, even many young boys and girls were seen lying on the ground among dead bodies. In the revelation who are being slain are mostly adulterers, drunkards, fearless of God, threatens godly people, taking others under estimates, consumers of money interest etc. In the revelation the intensity of Earthquake took place in the whole North East region but severely affected cities and towns are Guwahati, kokrajar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dimapur etc. They are due to full of corruption and turning into Hinduism, Animism and practice of occultism even among the Christians. In the revelation just after the earthquake, the following pestilence immediately spread in the whole North East such as blood cancer, stroke/ paralyses, cholera Epidemics etc. Even the doctors could not diagnose at all. Now God cannot tolerate the wickedness of people therefore his judgment is about to come in our days. Let us repent and seek God to have mercy upon us through fasting and prayer like Nineveh city until we fulfill the Bible Heb 10: 2b: “The worshipers once purified would have had no more consciousness of sins” (KJV). And get ready before we are too late. May the Lord bless you through his message. His humble servant Pitos, Hindu converted Merapani, Wokha

utterflies in my stomach and a great thrill exactly what I felt when I buckled up to take a paramotor ride here. It wasn't that someone who is scared of adventurous activities chose to indulge in an air sport that surprised people. But the fact that I did it in Guwahati - considered to be the gateway to the relatively less explored northeast India - raised many eyebrows. A city full of top fashion brands with high-rise residential and commercial buildings, Guwahati has changed a lot since the last time I set foot here two decades ago. So, it comes as no surprise that it is the only city from the northeast region that has found a place in the list of first 20 cities which will be developed into Smart Cities in 2016. In spite of all the new developments, two things haven't changed - its people's simplicity and the pride in speaking in Assamese. Since I hail from Imphal, which is about 40 minutes away from here by air, they assumed that I was one of them and that I was fluent in their language. But only I know how lost I was in translation especially while watching plays and lis-

tening to radio jockeys. Not that they don't converse in other languages. The moment the localites noticed my inability to understand Assamese, they quickly spoke in Hindi or English. Assigned to cover the second edition of Rongali - Destination, Culture, Harmony, a festival of Assam, I was eagerly looking forward to my return to Guwahati after 20 years. It's a place where my father bought our first car, I got my first Barbie and I started my first school year after kindergarten. Little did I know that the list of 'firsts' won't end here. Be it attending concerts of sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan and the home-grown talent Zubeen Garg, who is idolised by many in Assam, to digging into the Assamese delicacy called chicken khoika to taking a flight over the mighty Brahmaputra river on a paramotor, the threeday fest gave me more 'first' experiences during my second visit. Though I showed interest in paramotoring, it seemed like they were doubtful about it because of my weight. I was told that for balance purpose, one needs to weigh at least 50 kg, and bingo! I felt so glad to have gained weight

for the first time. With the helmet on and seat belt in place, I was geared up for my first paramotor ride, thankfully with a professional. Flying 500 ft above ground, it was like chasing the wind and the Brahmaputra staring right back at me. As long as the motor made a roaring sound and we moved straight, it felt fine. But there were times when the loud sound stopped, making my heart skip a few beats. The twists and turns, controlled by the pilot, further made me scream at the top of my lungs. No wonder why the paramotor pilot said that I was the first person to scare him to death. After that daring act and conclusion of the festival, I made sure to take a stroll down memory lane. So I, accompanied by a localite, made the Army School, Narangi - now Army Public School - my first stop. It's not just the name that has changed but also the whole look. The old buildings with metal roofing have given way to new ones in green and white hues. Nevertheless, I got emotional while taking a tour of the school, located away from the hustle and bustle of the city. While crossing our pre-

vious army accommodation here, I got into flashback mode. To cheer me up, my new friend took me to one of the city's popular sweet shops called Mishti Mukh, where she suggested to me to try patishapta - thin crepes mostly made with rice flour with a coconut filling. The other Bengali sweet she swore by was the soft and round kacha golla, made of uncooked cottage cheese and sugar. Heading home without a souvenir was not happening. So I added shopping, something that I loathe, to my itinerary. Yes, so products like bags made out of water hyacinth, eri silk jackets and Gamucha were responsible for excess baggage charges at the airport. Pressed for time and a traffic jam discouraged me from exploring the city more. So my last stop was the Purva Tirupati Sri Balaji Temple. With its strong lights, the white temple complex looked magnificent at night. Guwahati is one of the cities that I am emotionally connected to, and this trip made the bond even stronger. IANS

ou'd think that the parents of children with autism spectrum disorder would become fast friends and allies. After all, they have a great deal in common. Raising a child with autism can be difficult and confusing, and who would understand that better than the parent of another child with autism? While it's certainly true that there are wonderfully supportive groups of autism parents out there, the reality is that autism parents don't always see the world in the same way. Just as people on the spectrum are very different from one another, so too are their parents. In fact, parents of children (and adults) on the spectrum can actually become roadblocks for one another. How is that possible? Here are just a few of the most significant reasons. 1. Every Autistic Child is Unique: Imagine a situation in which two mothers of autistic ten year olds are ad-

vocating for their children in the same school district. But while one of the boys is high functioning, able to manage typical academics, but has challenges with social interaction, the other boy is nonverbal and has significant sensory challenges. Mom #1 got started with her advocacy first, and was able to work with the district to set up a terrific autism classroom with just the right supports for her son. Mom #2, who started a little later, is confronted with the reality that there's a brand new autism support room in the school that has few of qualities her son needs -and the school district is adamant that "it'll be just fine." Mom #1 is happy with what she's helped to create, and wants no changes made; Mom #2 is advocating for significant changes to the structure and supports in the "autism classroom." 2. Parents Have Different Philosophies About Autism: Dad #1 has a child with moderate autism. He's overwhelmed by the difficulty of interacting with a son who does "get" sports,

can't adhere to the rules of the Boy Scouts, and seems to have no interest in connecting with his same-age peers. He is driven by the desire to help his son learn the skills he needs to fit in with his peers. Dad #2 has a child with similar issues -- but to him, it's no big deal. "So what if our kids are different?" he asks, "we just need to support our kids as they are, and not try to turn them into someone they're not." Dad #1 wants Dad #2 to support him as he struggles to teach his son the basics of soccer. Dad #2 has little or no interest, and may wind up creating negative feel-

ings as he questions Dad #1's lack of empathy for his son. 3. Parents Have Different Goals for Their Children: Is it more important for a child with autism to feel comfortable in an autism-friendly school setting, or to learn to manage a difficult inclusive environment? Is it better to focus on finding a cure for your child's autism -- or to focus on helping your child to to live well with his challenges? Different goals necessarily mean that parents have different ideas about what's important in a school setting or in the community, and they may

have very different ideas about how to parent a child on the spectrum. 4. Parents Embrace and Promote Different Ideas About Treatments and Causes of Autism: Parent A is absolutely certain that her child's autism was caused by vaccines. Parent B feels that theory is a lot of nonsense. Parent A is dedicated to particular therapy, and believes that all parents should follow her example. She makes it her mission to reach out to every parent of an autistic child to evangelize about her chosen approach to autism treatment -- even when she's told "I'm not interested." These types of all-ornothing approaches can create real antagonism. If you find yourself frustrated by the autism parents you meet, you're not alone. Fortunately, it is often possible to find a group who focuses on a particular type of autism, treatment, or philosophy -- so you may discover a group that's right up your alley.

hen George Washington was about six years old, he was made the wealthy master of a hatchet of which, like most little boys, he was extremely fond. He went about chopping everything that came his way. One day, as he wandered about the garden amusing himself by hacking his mother's pea- sticks, he found a beautiful, young English cherry tree, of which his father was most proud. He tried the edge of his hatchet on the trunk of the tree and barked it so that it died. Some time after this, his father discovered what had happened to his favorite tree. He came into the house in great anger, and demanded to know who the mischievous person was who had cut away the bark. Nobody could tell him anything about it. Just then George, with his little hatchet, came into the room. "George," said his father, "do you know who has killed my beautiful little cherry tree yonder in the garden? I would not have taken five guineas for it!" This was a hard question to answer, and for a moment George was staggered by it, but quickly recovering himself he cried: "I cannot tell a lie, father, you know I cannot tell a lie! I did cut it with my little hatchet." The anger died out of his father's face, and taking the boy tenderly in his arms, he said: -"My son, that you should not be afraid to tell the truth is more to me than a thousand trees! yes, though they were blossomed with silver and had leaves of the purest gold!"

10 questions for your kids when they are bored

10

great questions to have your kids ask themselves when they are bored. Before you tell Mom you’re bored, answer these ques-

tions: 1. Is your room clean? Picking up a few things and straightening is an important thing to do every day. 2. Have you exercised? Use your body and get your heart rate up every day. 3. Can you help someone? The best way to use your free time is to give it to someone else. 4. Have you read a book today? Keep your mind exercised by reading every day! 5. Have you prayed? When you’re bored, it’s a good time to spend a few minutes talking to God. 6. Have you read the Bible? Find a verse and read it 3 times then say it out loud. 7. Have you done something creative? Draw a picture, write a story, play some music, weave a potholder. 8. Have you played a game with someone? NOT a video game, but a game where you sit at a table facing each other and talking to each other. 9. Are your chores done? Is the dog bowl clean and your laundry put away? You are an important part of your family and when you don’t do your chores you are making life harder for everyone else. 10. Is there something you can find to do yourself? Look around and see what you can do without interrupting Mom or Dad to ask. You might be surprised at what’s available to you already.

When tribes beg for missionaries to come

A

Mark Ellis

t New Tribes Mission (NTM), they collect many letters from indigenous people groups in Papua New Guinea pleading for missionaries to come and tell them about God, people earnestly seeking truth amidst the uncertainty of death and the afterlife. The following letter was sent by Aiben Awanhi of Isahu Village and received by NTM a few years ago: “Yes, I am writing because I have some thing with you ones. I have a big worry that I am not sure what will happen when death comes. I have heard from the other tribe that has the mission that they know now, I am sorry for myself that I do not know. I worry for my life, so I am asking that you will send the mission to my village. “The men and women of Isahu village we are very hungry for this talk that it will be in our bellies. Please have pity on us. In all other places of the ground we have heard that they have the talk of God but us ones of Isahu are still standing without, we have nothing. I have heard of others hearing this talk in other villages but this talk is not in Isahu yet. So please send some to learn our language and teach us this talk so we can know it too. NTM moionabout“Please have pity on our lives, we don’t know what will become of us when death is on us. So I am asking with a big strong request that you will come to us and teach us of this talk. This is the road that I have heard will be heard, that is why I have sent this letter to you bossmen of NTM. Our language is not hard here in Isahu, please come.” And a follow-up letter: “I want to notify you that now I have an illness. I am the man writing this letter to you. I have come down with a big illness and this illness of mine is saying such now that I do not know where death will take me. I am really concerned for myself. If I get the head talk and the beginning talk (the gospel teaching) then it will be alright with me. I often see

people go to church because the talk of God came to them. But I do not have, it has been this way since before. How God exists, I do not know…All of us men and woman of Isahu desire missionaries to come to our place of Isahu.” Here is another letter from Jaspe of Weku village: “Yes I am writing to the bossmen that are in NTM, I am checking again about the letters I have written. What’s going on with your thinking? I think

you are getting tired of the letters we have written. You must be thinking like this, the road to hear the talk of God it is just for you ones, that’s why you haven’t sent anyone to us in Weku. “Please, we are hungry for the true talk, we are not saying this with two mouths. Our thinking really desires to know this talk. So I ask with a big heart, please, you the bossmen of NTM tell us what you think of sending someone to us. Please write and tell us you bossmen, we are waiting and waiting.” And a letter from Eric Kaisoa: “I’m writing again for the 7th time to ask if you will come to my village or not…The people are saying that you must come. I’m saying this again. I think you all didn’t get my first 6 letters…The people are truly crying for a missionary and for God’s talk. Plenty of my letters asking for missionaries have been wasted. “Now I’m asking you to return a letter to me now. In the name of Jesus please return a letter quickly. I just want a missionary. I’m just wasting my money on these pens and paper, they don’t bear fruit. This one must produce the fruit right.” Eric wrote these letters for ten years, but there were not enough workers to send to his village. As Jesus said, NTM man waiting“the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.” In 2013, missionaries finally answered his plea. When they arrived, their first priority was to visit Eric and let him know his efforts had finally paid off – They were there to tell him and his people God’s talk! When they reached Eric’s home and spoke with his wife they learned something heartbreaking. Eric had died two years before their visit — without having a chance to hear God’s talk. This story could be repeated all over Papua New Guinea. “There are many tribes who need missionaries and we don’t have the people to send them,” Macon Hare, with NTM, notes with sadness. “Jesus said to ‘pray earnestly that the Lord of the Harvest would send out laborers into His harvest.”

Greed is Good...for Nothing

But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows. I Timothy 6:9-10

world in 80 days adventure travel package (first-class, of course) • My dream boat: A 60' sailing yacht with crew (I don't know a thing about sailing) • ,,,and more. In the midst of my vetted list of wants, ideas of how I could give some of the money away comes up when I’ve driven by that billboard. I would: • Pay off all of the college debt in my family • Sponsor 1,000 well digs • Donate to missionary friends who live around the world As I contemplated what to buy and how much to give away, I quickly realized I was planning my life with money I did not have. Seeing that prize money billboard got me to thinking about actually buying a lottery ticket. That greed seed grew as I considered gambling away my money with the longshot chance of winning. I’ve never gambled to get a quick buck, but the dream of having a large bank account is a nice thought. And I’m willing to bet that some of you have as well. In my humanness, I mentally justi-

a greedy person. But I must confess, I tend to lean toward holding money instead of giving it freely. Realizing my disobedience (according these scriptures), my prayer this year is “God, give me clear opportunities to be a giver, instead of a hoarder.” • Give generously to the poor, not grudgingly, for the LORD your God will bless you in everything you do. Deuteronomy 15:10 • Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it's in your power to help them. Proverbs 3:27 • Some people are always greedy for more, but the godly love to give! Proverbs 21:26 • Whoever gives to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to poverty will be cursed. Proverbs 28:27 • Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can't take anything with us when we leave it. So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. I Timothy 6:6-8

The wisdom that comes from heaven Selie Visa Scripture passage - James 3:13-18 “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.” Wisdom is the most valuable possession: “Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for she (wisdom) is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.” (Proverbs 3:13) The wisdom of God is infinite: “Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.” Psalm 147:5 Practical application of wisdom: In today’s Scripture passage, James addresses the person who is "wise and understanding." The former word was a technical term among the Jews for the teacher, the scribe, and the rabbi. James is speaking to those who would be teacher. Here he is not concerned with what they say, but rather how they live. "Understanding" describes one who is an expert, who has special knowledge or training. Thus anyone who would be a teacher, who claims to be an expert with special understanding, is under obligation to "show it by his good life." He should possess "know how" and be skilled in applying God's truth to practical, everyday living. Humility is characteristic of wisdom: James stressed that humility comes from wisdom. "Humility" is perhaps better translated “gentleness”. It is not a passive gentleness growing out of weakness or resignation; rather, it is an active attitude of deliberate acceptance. This gentleness is strength under control, the control of the Spirit of God. It is a gentleness that is characteristic of wisdom. The focal point is practical wisdom that enables one to live a life of godliness. Bitter envy and selfish ambition: Some of James's readers were harboring bitter envy and selfish ambition in their hearts. "Selfish ambition" is a self-seeking attitude bent on gaining advantage and prestige for oneself or one's group. Selfish zeal means fanatical zeal for a cause in either a good or a bad sense. But zeal with bitterness is a sinful zeal. Because this condition existed among his readers, James insists that they must "not boast about (bitter zeal and selfish ambition) or deny the truth. Some people may pride themselves in their partisan defense of the truth-- a defense that is for their own advantage and advancement. Through such bitter and partisan defense, they were in reality denying the very truth they were attempting to defend.

The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is Hannah Goodwyn right, greed works. ichael Douglas personified greed as Gordon Gekko, the money-hungry antagonist in the 1987 movie, Wall Street. His famous “Greed is Good” speech perfectly encapsulates the danger in American Dream thinking. The lifestyle of this beloved/hated character illustrates utter selfishness, yet it intrigues us as we seek our own fortunes. Recalling this movie scene, I battled my own bit of greed while driving home yesterday. A lottery billboard on the side of the interstate unearthed buried thoughts of greed I didn’t know existed. 290 million dollars. That’s the state’s lotto jackpot, at the moment. It has steadily increased during the past few weeks, and each time I’ve driven past it, thoughts of what I could do with that kind of money flood my mind. At almost 300 million, my wish list could be extensive and not even make a dent in my over-stuffed bank account. I could get:

The Bible instructs us to be good stewards of God’s provision (no matter what tax bracket we are in), instead of wishing for more. It’s one thing to trust the Lord to provide all of our needs in unique ways; it’s another when we’re coveting riches. Greed brings grief to the whole family… Proverbs 15:27 Greedy people try to get rich quick, but don't realize they're headed for poverty. Proverbs 28:22 (This makes sense considering the bankruptcies lotto winners experience after winning more money then they can handle). And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your soul? Mark 8:36 Then he said, "Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own." Luke 12:15 Our God, “who owns the cattle on a thousand hills” (Ps. 50:10), has rightly blessed many with wealth. So having money isn’t the problem. It is the love of money that corrupts, as explained in I Timothy.

Genuine wisdom is not the wisdom claimed by the would-be teachers whose lives contradict their claims of possessing wisdom. Such "wisdom" evaluates everything by worldly standards and makes personal gain life's highest goal. The real concept of wisdom is practical rather than theoretical. God is the source of genuine wisdom. It is God-given understanding that enables a person to avoid the paths of wickedness and to live a life of righteousness. Pseudo-wisdom is not from him, and James declares such wisdom does not come down from heaven. Instead, it is earthly in source as well as kind. It views life from the limited viewpoint of this world rather than from heaven's vantage point. Its mind is set on earthly things and therefore unspiritual. The spiritual person has received the Spirit of God, but the unspiritual person does not have the Spirit. Thus wisdom that is unspiritual characterizes unregenerate human nature and hence it is of the devil. Enemies of the cross: “For, as I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things.” (Philippians 3:18-19). Paul felt real anguish when the churches were threatened with falseness of doctrine or life. The ultimate end for such persons is destruction (eternal loss). "Their god is their stomach" suggests sensualists who indulged in various physical appetites without restraint. By their indulgence, they actually bragged about what they ought to have been ashamed of. They became "enemies of the cross" by continually minding earthly things. Their whole attention is focused on physical and material interests, rather than on spiritual things.

Disorder and evil practice: Bitter zeal and selfish ambition always result in disorder and every evil practice. "Disorder" is a common word for anarchy and political turmoil. James is no doubt speaking of disturbance and turmoil in the church. owing to pressure from hardline Hindu groups, the Nepalese congress banned any acts leading to conversions from one religion to another in the country’s new constitution. It also prohibits acts that undermine or jeopardize the religion of another. At the same time they declared the nation to be secular and neutral toward all religions. The change concerns Christian missionaries in the region who reportedly have seen greater openness to the Gospel than ever before, especially following the April 2015 earthquake that killed 8,000 people. “Christianity is increasing rapidly. Doing outreaches is easier than before,” said Nepalese Pastor Sanjay Tripathi. “We are seeing souls getting saved. Living for Christ too. Majority of people have heard the Good News of Christ. God is moving for our nation.” Tripathi said the greatest barriers until now have not been presented by the authorities, who voted against declaring Nepal a “Hindu nation,” despite protests by radical Hindus. He said the main barriers have been in the family. “To come to Christ, I had to leave my family,” Pastor Tripathi said. “They don’t accept me. Nor my old friends.” Still, international observers have voiced concern that the Nepalese government flouted international treaties to guarantee freedom of religion for all its citizens. Christian Solidarity Worldwide

has criticized the ban on evangelism. “The freedom to choose and change one’s faith is a fundamental right which must be upheld as an essential part of any constitution which adheres to international human rights principles,” said Chief Executive Mervyn Thoma. “Nepal is a state party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which guarantees the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, including the freedom to have or to adopt a religion or belief of his or her choice.” The new constitution, signed by Nepal’s president in September 2015, is part of a transition from monarchy to democracy started in 2008. The constitution stipulates fines and jail time for “any act to convert another

person from one religion to another or any act or behavior to undermine or jeopardize the religion of another.” Hindu radicals staged rowdy protests outside the congress demanding a full-blown return to the “Hindu nation” status of the monarchy, but congressmen inside the chambers rejected such extremism. In response, protesters attacked and damaged three churches in their rage, but greater backlash has not yet been seen. The ban, if enforced, would affect equally Muslims, Christians, Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses and any other religion. Missionaries and pastors are continuing the sort of “quiet” evangelism they have done for years during a time of much tougher restrictions. In the 1980s and ’90s, they worked to ad-

Bengaluru, FeBruary 6 (IanS): The Karnataka government on Friday assured Africans, especially students, living in the city of their safety following a brutal assault on a Tanzanian woman by a mob in the suburbs last week. "We assure all Africans living here of their safety. We will not allow repeat of such an unfortunate incident again," Home Minister G. Parameshwara told reporters after briefing visiting Tanzanian High Commissioner John W.H. Kijazi on action taken against the culprits who assaulted and molested the 21-year-old victim on Sunday night in a case of mistaken identity. The minister and senior police officers also made the assurance to Kijazi and the ministry of external affairs (MEA) team who flew into the city for taking stock of the situation arising out of the shocking incident. "We have also submitted an inquiry report to Kijazi and the MEA team detailing the sequence of events leading to the assault, arrest of nine accused and suspension of three policemen for failing to handle the situation and help the victim," said Parameshwara. Ex-armyman sentenced to life for killing daughters

MaTHura, FeBruary 6 (PTI): A retired armyman has been sentenced to life imprisonment for killing his three daughters and making an attempt on his wife's life in Nagla Deepa village here in 2013. Additional District Judge I D Dubey awarded the punishment to the convict yesterday and imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on him. According to the prosecution, the convict shot his daughters aged seven, five and three years, who were playing outside their house. When the mother attempted to save the girls, she was also shot at by the convict. Assistant government counsel Virendra Lavania said two of the girls died on the spot, while the third succumbed to her injuries in the hospital. The convict's wife and mother turned hostile during the course of the trial, Lavania said. But the court convicted the man on the basis of circumstantial evidence.

"There seems to be an explosion in the garden. Due to the impact, a driver employed by the college and others were hit by flying stones. While the driver died, three others were injured," a police official told IANS over phone from the site of the incident. He said the incident happened inside the Bharathidasan Engineering College in Natrampalli in Vellore district. According to the police official, a three-feetwide crater was created in the garden at the explosion spot. The official said police were combing the college premises to ascertain the reason for the blast.

11th day of Delhi civic stir; employees burn PM, CM effigies new DelHI, FeBruary 6 (IanS): The strike by municipal workers continued for the 11th day on Saturday as employees of Delhi's civic bodies burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over non-payment of salaries. The protestors, in north Delhi's Burari area, said the city and central governments were not taking their demands seriously. Hundreds of employees of the municipal corporations staged a noisy demonstration and dumped garbage at various places including the camp office of Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in Khichripur and Shyam Lal College in Burari. "We will continue to dump garbage on the streets of Delhi till our demands are met," Sanjay Gehlot, president of the Mazdoor Vikas Sanyukta Morcha, told IANS. Gahlot said workers will visit Delhi High Court on Monday and apprise it of the whole issue. United Front of MCD Employees president Rajesh Mishra said a section of doctors and engineers called off their strike but it will not affect their ongoing protest. Employees of Delhi's civic bodies have been protesting over the non-payment of salaries for the past few months, and directing their ire at both the Delhi and central governments for the last 11 days.

Parliamentary panel slams Goa for anti-coconut tree law PanajI, FeBruary 6 (IanS): A parliamentary standing committee on science and technology, environment and forests on Saturday slammed the Goa government for passing an amendment de-recognising the coconut palm as a tree. The committee, headed by Rajya Sabha member Ashwani Kumar, blamed the state government for its "tardy implementation of environmental laws and regulation", and recommended a review of the controversial legislation. Addressing a press conference, following a day-long discussion with state government officials, tourism and mining industry stakeholders and civil society groups, Ashwani Kumar said: "There was the issue of the definition of forests in which a coconut tree in Goa is not regarded as a tree, is regarded as grass which we found extremely unusual."We have recommended that a review of the definition of tree, under the tree protection act be undertaken," he said.

State Home Minister G. Parameshwara had on Friday assured the African students living in the city of their safety after briefing visiting Tanzanian High Commissioner J.H John W.H. Kijazi on steps against the guilty and restore nor-

malcy. An angry mob had assaulted the 21-year-old victim, suspecting her to be a friend of a drunk Sudanese student, Mohammad Ahad Ismail, 20, whose car ran over woman pedestrian Shabana Taz, 35 fatally on Sunday night and injured her husband K. Sanaullah. The Sudanese national, a MBA college student, was arrested for Shabana's death and drunken driving after police came and res-

cued him from a mob. Outraged by Shabana's death, another mob mistakenly targetted the victim and burnt the car in which she was with three male friends, assuming her to be Ismail's friend. In her statement, the victim denied being stripped or paraded naked but admitted that she was assaulted and molested by the mob when her top (T-shirt) got torn off in the scuffle.

India says no rush on GM food but will not stand in way of science new DelHI, FeBruary 6 (reuTerS): India needs more data before deciding whether to permit commercial growing of its first genetically modified food crop, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said on Friday, but indicated it would not stand "in the way of science" despite protests. Javadekar said the evaluation process would continue before the country moves ahead with the use of a technology that promises better farm yields but sharply divides public opinion. A committee of government and independent experts is seeking more information from a team of Indian scientists who have spent almost a decade on laboratory and field trials for a GM mustard crop. "We will not rush through, but we will also not come in the way of science," Javadekar told reporters. "We have to feed more than a billion mouths and we have to raise productivity... (but) we will not compromise on people's health." The meeting, the third held to evaluate field trial data on GM mustard this year, had raised hopes among scientists that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is keen to push technology to lift food productivity. India spends billions of dollars every year importing edible oils and other food items to help offset its abysmal food productivity levels. Farmers are stuck with old technology, yields are

at a fraction of global levels, cultivable land is shrinking and weather patterns have become less predictable. Some farm economists have said India should speed up efforts to embrace GM foods after China took a giant leap towards GM with its bid for Swiss transgenic seed developer Syngenta. But public and political opposition to transgenic food remains strong amid fears they could compromise food safety and biodiversity. About 200 placardholding protesters shouted anti-GM slogans outside Javadekar's office earlier on Friday. Kapil Mishra, a minister in Delhi state who met Javadekar, called it a win for those resisting GM crops. "(A) small victory but a long battle ahead," he said on Twitter. India placed a moratorium on GM aubergine in 2010, fearing the effect on food safety and biodiversity. That effectively brought the regulatory system to deadlock. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was instrumental in making Gujarat state the leading user of GM cotton in India when he was chief minister, cleared several field trials soon after taking office in New Delhi in 2014. BMI Research said in a note that though some Asian governments are becoming more open to the idea of allowing GM food cultivation, the adoption rate of GM crops will remain slow.

Birds of 11 rare species Noted Cartoonist Tailang passes away found in Jharkhand ranCHI, FeBruary 6 (IanS): Birds of 11 rare species thought to be extinct have been found during a survey of the water bodies in Jharkhand, a state forest department official said. The water bodies of Jharkhand managed to draw as many as 37,000 migratory birds belonging to 29 species last year, the survey carried out on behalf of the Jharkhand forest department found. As per the Asian Bird Survey 2015, the bird count around reservoirs and other water bodies, including 25 dams, in the state was 71,134. "Loud music and other noises near water bodies scare away birds, due to which proper counting can't take place. The bird survey in the state was completed in February," the official told IANS. The survey said most birds visited the Massanjore Dam in Dumka, where the number of winged visitors was put at 9,564, followed by Chandil at 7,896 and Udhav at 7,823 birds.

The fourth and fifth spots were claimed by Tilaiya and Patratu dams with 6,460 and 5,821 bird populations respectively. The bird survey was carried out at the dams of Lotwa, Tilayia, Udhwa, Hatia, Getalsud, Patratu, Kanke, Khandoli, Topchanchi, Maithon, Panchet and Massanjore, apart from Tenughat, Konar, Budha, Gonda, Chandil, Dimna, Sitaram, Kansjore, Tapkara, Malay and dams located inside the Palamu Tiger Reserve. The survey team also identified a couple of migratory birds from Mongolia, including Bar Headed Geese. The other species of migratory birds included White Necked Stork, Oriental White Ibis and Northern Shoveler. "No proper arrangement is in place to prevent poaching of migratory birds at dams in Jharkhand. We will try to improve security near dams to preserve and protect the avian fauna, particularly migratory birds," said the official.

Proud of 'family': Cong hits back at PM new DelHI, FeBruary 6 (PTI): Taking an aggressive stand, Congress today hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for targeting the Gandhis, saying it was proud of the "family" and warned that any attempt "to separate them from the party" would attract a "befitting" reply. The party's sharp retort came as its war of words with the government intensified ahead of the Budget session with Modi yesterday attacking Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul, saying "one family" was disrupting Parliament to avenge defeat in 2014 Lok Sabha polls and stalling bills aimed at benefiting the poor.

Congress senior spokesman Anand Sharma today said the party was proud of the "family" which was "integral" to it and the PM should refrain from provoking and insulting the principal opposition. "It is a funny way of seeking co-operation by attacking the leadership of the Congress and we want to tell the Prime Minister one thing categorically that when he talks of our leadership or the family, we are proud of that and they are integral to the Congress," he told reporters. Sharma told the Prime Minister that he and the BJP cannot separate the Indian National Congress and its leadership and "if you try to do so, we

will be giving a befitting reply to the best of our ability and they must never be in doubt about that". Asked whether the confrontation would escalate in the budget session in the backdrop of the Prime Minister's remarks, he said, "If that is what he wants, then it is most unfortunate for our democracy." "He is the Prime Minister of the country. He should not provoke and insult the principal Opposition Party and then they say that he seeks co-operation," he said. He also contended that it was "always due to the stubborn and confrontational attitude of the Prime Minister" that the proceedings in Parliament were stalled.

President reviews full display of India's naval might

VISaKHaPaTnaM, FeBruary 6 (IanS): President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday inspected an International Fleet Review (IFR) which had on full display India's naval might and brought together navies from across the globe along Indian shores underscoring peace and cooperation rather than conflict. The International Fleet Review (IFR) off Visakhapatnam coast brought together "navies from across the globe here on Indian shores, signifying the common desire to use the seas to promote peace, cooperation and friendship", President Mukherjee said after inspecting the review. He said the presence of foreign countries in such a large number had made the event spectacular, truly reflecting the spirit of IFR that humanity was indeed united through the oceans. "IFR 2016 has enabled us to join hands and work together to secure our seas for the greater good of humanity and the world," the president said. A fleet review is a ceremonial and stately inspection of naval warships by the President, who is the

supreme commander of the Indian armed forces. Mukherjee inspected the International Fleet Review of 71 Indian naval ships from aboard the presidential yacht INS Sumitra. Also on the yacht were Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and the three service chiefs. As Myanmar powerbrokers talk, could Suu Kyi emerge as prez? N AY P Y I TAW / YA N GON, FebruArY 6 (reuTers): As Aung San Suu Kyi's lawmakers smiled for the cameras at the first sessions of Myanmar's parliament, a summit of generals convened at a base just minutes from the chamber. On every mind was the same question: who will be the country's next president? The parallel events summed up the complex nature of the political transition: a much-publicized election of parliament speakers at which former foes from Suu Kyi's party and the military shook hands, while behind closed doors the country's top power brokers met to hammer out how they will run Myanmar. After a quiet period following Suu Kyi's massive election win in November, negotiations have entered a critical stage since a meeting between army chief Min Aung Hlaing and Suu Kyi on Jan. 26, lawmakers and diplomats close to the process say. With its huge mandate Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) can chose the next president

but, under the constitution written by the army before it ceded power in 2011, she herself cannot take the job. The NLD wants that changed. "Our first priority includes amending laws which are out of date and not in harmony with the present situation," Tun Tun Hein, a member of the NLD's governing council, told reporters after being appointed chairman of the key lower house bill committee. "The constitution also needs amending since it's one of the laws." The army has so far insisted it wants no change to the constitution and would not countenance Suu Kyi's presidency. She has struck a defiant note, saying she would lead the country "standing above the president". Now, some Yangonbased diplomats say Min Aung Hlaing might be tempted to compromise in return for a pledge from Suu Kyi that she would not infringe on the military's vast economic interests nor seek revenge for abuses under years of junta rule. As well as burnishing his legacy, such a move

would also put responsibility for fixing an impoverished country riven by decades of ethnic conflict squarely on Suu Kyi, they say. "If you keep her without any official title she is free to strategise without the day-to-day burden of running the country," said a Western diplomat, who did not want to be named

because of the sensitivity of the matter. The New York Times on Friday cited two senior members of the NLD as saying that talks with the military have included a possible deal that would allow Suu Kyi to be president in exchange for senior government posts. It did not name the party leaders and said details of the negotia-

tions were murky. BLURRED RED LINES It is not known what was discussed at this week's meeting at army headquarters, which sits close to the sprawling parliament complex in Myanmar's remote capital Naypyitaw. Confirming the gathering coincided with the opening week of the new-

ly elected legislature, two sources familiar with the matter said senior commanders from across the country gather a few times a year to discuss military matters. But politics was likely high on the agenda - the military retains a central role in the former Burma, with a quarter of seats in parliament reserved for it,

along with control of the security forces and the civil service. Moreover, with its block of seats in parliament the military wields a veto over any changes to the constitution, which requires a super-majority of more than 75 percent. Asked about the chances that the constitution could be amended to allow Suu Kyi to be president, Major General Tauk Tun, the most senior military lawmaker in the lower house, did not entirely rule it out, while at the same time sticking to the military's line on the sanctity of the 2008 charter. "We'll do it according to the constitutional provisions," he said. Even if the two sides were to agree to change the constitution, it would still require a nationwide referendum. To circumvent that lengthy process, article 59 (f), which bars anyone with a foreign spouse or children from the presidency and so disqualifies Suu Kyi, whose sons are British citizens, could be suspended, according to Aung Ko, a former general and Suu Kyi

ally, and NLD legal experts. Whether that would be lawful remains open to debate, and even some Suu Kyi supporters worry about the precedent it could set. "Personally I do want Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to become the president, but I honestly don't think the constitution should be suspended since this is not a good tradition to hand down to future parliaments," said lawmaker Ba Shin of the Arakan National Party, a large ethnic party from Rakhine State. The NLD has until the end of March to organise the presidential vote in the parliament, but top leaders said they may carry it out next week or towards the end of February, suggesting the two sides could be close to striking a deal. "They are trying to find a solution that doesn't step on everyone's red lines," said Kelly Currie, senior fellow at the Washingtonbased Asia-focused think tank Project 2049 Institute. "Most likely a more straightforward situation is better. Better than Suu Kyi governing but not having a position."

After studying 1.59 billion people active on the social networking website, the team determined that the number is actually 3.57 -- meaning thereby that there is actually “threeand-a-half degrees of separation” where each person in the world is connected to every other person by an average of three-and-a-half other people. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is 3.17 degrees of separation from all Facebook users. According to researchers, our collective “degrees of separation” have shrunk

over the past five years. In 2011, researchers at Cornell University, the Università degli Studi di Milano and Facebook computed the average across the 721 million people using the website. “They and found that it was 3.74. Now, with twice as many people using the site, we've grown more interconnected, thus shortening the distance between any two people in the world,” Facebook said in a post. “Calculating this number across billions of people and hundreds of billions of friendship connections is challenging; we use statistical techniques described below to precisely estimate distance based on de-identified, aggregate data,” the team wrote. Imagine a person with 100 friends. If each of his friends also has 100 friends, then the number of friendsof-friends will be 10,000.

If each of those friendsof-friends also has 100 friends then the number of friends-of-friends-offriends will be 1,000,000. “Some of those friends may overlap, so we need to filter down to the unique connections. Rather than calculate it exactly, we relied on statistical algorithms to estimate distances with great accuracy, basically finding the approximate number of people within 1, 2, 3 (and so on) hops away from a source,” the researchers noted. “The average distance we observe is 4.57, corresponding to 3.57 intermediaries or "degrees of separation." Within the US, people are connected to each other by an average of 3.46 degrees,” the post added. The “six degrees of separation” theory was coined by the Hungarian playwright Frigyes Karinthy in 1929.

TOKYO/seOuL, FebruArY 6 (reuTers): North Korea may launch a rocket that it says will carry an earth observation satellite as soon as Sunday, after bringing forward and shortening the time frame for the launch, the Japanese and South Korean governments said on Saturday. North Korea had earlier told the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) it would launch the rocket some time between Feb. 8 and Feb. 25, triggering international opposition from governments that see it as a long-range missile test. Japan and South Korea said North Korea had issued a Notice to Airmen that the launch would take place some time between Sunday and the following Sunday, Feb. 14. Isolated North Korea says it has a sovereign right to pursue a space programme. But it is barred under U.N. Security Council resolutions from using ballistic missile technology. Tension has been high

on the Korean peninsula following the North’s fourth nuclear test, on Jan. 6. A rocket test now would compound fears about North Korea putting a nuclear warhead on a missile that could reach not only South Korea and Japan but possibly even the west coast of the United States. North Korea last launched a long-range rocket in December 2012, sending into orbit an object it described as a communications satellite. The new time frame was set amid rising expectations that a launch was likely to happen soon, with U.S. government sources on Friday saying North Korea could be ready by the U.S. Super Bowl kickoff on Sunday, which will be Monday in Korea. Satellite images taken this week of North Korea’s Sohae rocket launch site show apparent fuelling activity seen in the past shortly before a rocket launch, said Washington-based 38 North, a North Korea-monitoring project. The IMO, a United Nations agency, did not immediately

respond to a Reuters query for confirmation. The International Telecommunication Union, another U.N. agency, said it was not aware of an amended time frame for the launch from North Korea. North Korean state media had not reported on the changed schedule. On Friday, U.S. President Barack Obama spoke by telephone with Presi-

dent Xi Jinping of China, North Korea’s main ally and neighbour, and agreed that a North Korean launch would represent a “provocative and destabilising action,” the White House said. Obama and Xi also said they would coordinate efforts to respond to North Korea’s nuclear test last month and said they would not accept North Korea as

a nuclear weapon state. “The leaders emphasized the importance of a strong and united international response to North Korea’s provocations, including through an impactful UN Security Council Resolution,” the White House said. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi criticised North Korea in remarks made on Friday in Namibia, according to a report released on the Chinese foreign ministry’s website, calling on the UN Security Council to take further action. The United States and China have appeared divided over how to respond to North Korea, with Washington urging tougher sanctions and Beijing stressing the need for dialogue. Japan has said it would shoot down the rocket if it threatens the country, and on Saturday accelerated the deployment of two additional PAC-3 missile units in response to the revised launch time frame, a Japanese defence ministry official said.

that mark the most important family holiday in the Chinese calendar. The collapsed building had 256 registered residents, but far more people could have been inside when it fell because the population might have swelled ahead of the holiday, when families typically host guests. Local media said the building included a care center for newborns and mothers, and a newborn was among those confirmed dead in the disaster. Most people were asleep when the magnitude-6.4 earthquake hit at about 4 a.m., 22 miles (35 kilometers) southeast

of Yujing. It struck only 6 miles (10 kilometers) underground, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Shallow earthquakes generally cause more damage than deeper ones. Tainan resident Lin Bao-gui, a secondhand car salesman whose cars were smashed when the building collapsed across the street from him, said his house first started “shaking horizontally, then up and down, then a big shake right to left.” “I stayed in my bed but jumped up when I heard a big bang, which was the sound of the building falling,” he said. Authorities in Tainan

said that of the 14 people killed in the quake, 11 were found at the ruins of the fallen building. Rescuers found the bodies of a 10-day-old infant, three other children and six adults at the collapsed building, Taiwan’s emergency management information center said. One other death was reported at the site, but details were not immediately available. Authorities said two people were killed by falling objects elsewhere in Tainan. No details were available on the 14th death, reported Saturday night. Rescuers pulled out at least 247 survivors from

the collapsed building, the emergency management information center said. Throughout Tainan, 334 people were rescued, the city government said. The information center said 477 people were injured, with 380 of them discharged from hospitals by Saturday evening. The Taiwanese news website ET Today reported that a mother and daughter were among the survivors from the building, and that the girl drank her urine while waiting to be rescued, which happened sooner than expected. All told, nine buildings collapsed and five careened in Tainan, the emergency management information center said. As dawn broke, Taiwanese TV showed survivors being brought gingerly from the high-rise, including an elderly woman in a neck brace and others wrapped in blankets. The trappings of daily life — a partially crushed air conditioner, pieces of a metal balcony, windows — lay twisted in rubble. The quake was felt as a lengthy, rolling shake in the capital, Taipei, on the other side of the island. But Taipei was quiet, with no sense of emergency or obvious damage just before dawn.

ThimPhu, February 6 (PTi): Bhutan's royal couple today announced the birth of their first child, a baby prince, the heir to the Golden Throne, leading to celebrations in the Himalayan Kingdom. The new crown prince was born yesterday to King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema at the Lingkana Palace in the Bhutanese capital, the Royal Media Office announced. "Their Majesties and members of the Royal family are filled with profound joy on the birth of His Royal Highness," it said in a statement. All sacred Bhutanese traditions were observed for the auspicious occasion with Je Khenpo, the chief abbot and spiritual leader of the majority Buddhist nation, presiding over the religious ceremonies. "We welcome the news with great joy and happiness. The day calls for a great celebration throughout the country," Prime Minister Lyonchoen Tshering Tobgay was quoted as saying by Kuensel Online. However, he said the

King has ordered that celebration should be kept small considering the economy of the country. The government has decided to declare Monday a national holiday to celebrate the joyous occasion so that the people may offer their prayers and good wishes. 35-year-old Namgyel

was officially crowned fifth king in 2008 after his father abdicated the throne in his favour two years earlier. The Oxford-educated King married commoner Queen Pema, 25, in 2011 in an elaborate traditional Buddhist ceremony that was the biggest media event in Bhutanese history.

Tainan, February 6 (aP): Rescuers were searching late Saturday for more than 100 people still missing after a powerful, shallow earthquake struck southern Taiwan before dawn, causing a high-rise residential building to collapse and killing at least 14 people. Nearly 340 people were rescued from the rubble in Tainan, the city hit worst by the quake. About 2,000 firefighters and soldiers scrambled with ladders, cranes and other equipment to the ruins of the 17-floor residential building, which folded like an accordion onto its side after the quake struck. The spectacular fall of the building immediately raised questions about its construction, and Taiwan’s interior minister said there would be an investigation. Local authorities said Saturday night that more than 100 people remained missing and that rescuers were racing to find them. Taiwan’s official Central News Agency reported that 172 people were missing. Hundreds of people were injured in the quake, but most of them had been released from hospitals by Saturday night. The quake came two days before the start of Lunar New Year celebrations

India begin golden run at SAG, on top in medals tally

Guwahati, February 6 (Pti): It was gold rush for India on the opening day of the South Asian Games with the country's wrestlers, swimmers and weightlifters showing their regional dominance by making a near clean sweep of top honours here today. India clinched 14 gold, and five silver medals on a highly productive day to top the medals tally with an overall count of 19. Sri Lanka, despite having a higher overall medal count of 21, occupied the second spot in the table owing to a lesser tally of gold medals (4). Wrestlers were the stars for India, grabbing as many as five gold medals followed by the swimmers who clinched four gold and three silver medals. The weightlifters added three gold medals to the tally after the cyclists had opened India's account with two gold and an equal number of silver medals in the morning. Three women and two male grapplers finished on top of the podium as the proceedings went on expected lines on the opening day of the competitions. Rajneesh and Ravinder bagged the gold in Men's 65kg and 57kg divisions respectively. In women's wrestling,

Priyanka Singh claimed the top position in 48kg, while Manisha won the gold in 60kg and Archana Tomar clinched the yellow metal in 55kg categories. The Indians created quite a splash in the pool as well picking up three of their four gold medals by clocking record times. Asian Games bronze-medallist Sandeep Sejwal (men's 200m breaststroke), Shivani Kataria (women's 200m freestyle) and the women's 100m freestyle relay team set new Games record timings on their way to gold while Damini Gowda added another yellow metal in women's 100m butterfly. Sejwal won his pet event in 2:20.66sec to better his own record of 2:21.03 which he had set in the last edition in Dhaka in 2010 and defended his title. Kiran Jasinghe of Sri Lanka and Mohd Shariful Islam came second and third in 2:26.17 and 2:26.99 respectively. In women's 200m freestyle, Kataria first set a new Games record in the morning heats with a timing of 2:12.13 and she bettered it in the evening with an effort of 2:08.68 on her way to gold. Machiko Raheem and Ishani Erandika Senanayake, both from Sri Lanka, were second and third respectively.

Hazard reveals Mourinho apology London, February 6 (aFP): Eden Hazard sent a text message to Jose Mourinho after his sacking to apologise for his poor form, the Chelsea winger revealed in a British newspaper interview published on Saturday. "I sent him the message to say I was sorry he had gone and ... well ... just that I was sorry," Hazard told The Guardian. "We'd enjoyed all that success together last season, but this time round we hadn't." Hazard, 25, swept the board in last season's player of the year awards after Chelsea won a Premier League and League Cup double. But his form has nose-dived this season, mirroring the fortunes of the team, whose record of nine defeats in their opening 16 league game saw Mourinho sacked as manager in December. "I felt a little bit guilty because I'd been player of the year," added Hazard, who is yet to score in the league this season. "I'd been one of the most decisive players, and this year I'd performed less well. I hadn't been at the same level. So I sent that text to Jose and he came back to me, wishing me all the best for the future. "For a team of champions to go through what we have this year, even I can't explain. Things have been better recently, but we're still not winning games quite as we used to."

Man United hold talks with Mourinho – reports London, February 6 (aFP): Jose Mourinho's representatives have held talks with Manchester United about replacing Louis van Gaal as manager of the Premier League club, according to reports on Friday. Mourinho has been strongly linked with the Old Trafford post since being sacked by Chelsea in December and the BBC and Manchester Evening News claim discussions have started with a view to the Portuguese coach taking over at the end of this season. Van Gaal has endured stinging criticism from former United players and the club's fans for his conversative tactics, with reports suggesting he was twice talked out of quitting by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward earlier this term.

Younger brother: The concept and philosophy coded in language

C

oncepts, principles, and philosophies, are coded in words and symbols (languages/dialects/tongues) in order to communicate and make them intelligible and meaningful to the hearers, and therefore it is crucial that we know the root words and origins of certain words and symbols to fully understand them. I have lately learnt to truly appreciate the supremacy of words and symbols (languages/dialects/tongues) as the prodigious and wise gifts of God, and that we must celebrate such gifts as they all are unique and convey different concepts and philosophies, written in the heart of people and cultures. For example, let’s take words in English, “Younger brother”. When one hears the word “Younger brother” in English, what pops in our mind is a family member, a brother who is younger to us by age. However, since English is not our Nagas’ native language, knowing words and meanings simply don’t evoke deeper meaning in most cases. Furthermore, even if we learn the root words and origins of the

certain English words, say, younger brother, they don’t impact as much as our own languages/tongues touch our souls and hearts overwhelmingly. The reason I think is there is a distant gap in between cultures and we cannot simply see the pictures and concepts ingrained in the English words. As such, when we hear someone calling younger brother, or when we tell someone, Alo or Meren is my younger brother, what we are simple saying is, Alo or Meren is a family member, a brother younger to me by age. That it! To me, no deeper meaning is evoked. On the other hand, let’s see the root word for “younger brother” in my native Rengma Naga tongue and the meaning it evokes. In Rengma Naga tongue, the word for younger brother is “Asikezengü”, which is a combination of three words- asi meaning my track or footsteps, kezen meaning following or obeying, and gü is a gender connotation for male (gi- connotes female), thus, a younger brother literally means, one who follows my tracks and footsteps, one who obeys me. The concept of younger brother- asikezengü

is very profound, in that the mandate of being a younger brother, there is a deep philosophy and principle and ethics ingrained within the word. Evenly, say if you then have a younger brother, you might need to ask yourself, what are my track records? Have I been faithful, honest, sincere, or successful? etc., that I can see and regard myself as the elder brother to someone, or call my younger brother as ‘asikezengü’? What are my footsteps that I can confidently let my younger brother follows and obeys? Will my conscience allow me to let my younger brother follows my tracks and footsteps? The concept and philosophy of kinship coded in the word “asikezengü,” I think is very Biblical and is given by God Himself from time immemorial. I believe, thus, every language and dialect is God’s great and wise gifts written and resides in the soul and heart of people and culture. The Bible talks about God writing His laws (principles, precepts) in the hearts of people (Jeremiah 31:33). The word ‘younger brother’ is not just

a word description of age and kin, but literally younger brother by principle is following and obeying their elder brothers’ footsteps and tracks, and equally, to be an elder brother is simply not a name or title and description, rather, the elder brother is an exemplar, a good leader, who has a good track records and whose footsteps are followed by their younger brothers. The other profound thing about every language/dialect/tongue is the feeling and knitting power. By feeling and knitting power, I mean to say if two persons speak same tongue to one another, there is an unseen connection in their subconscious and souls. This to me is evident, for instance, you meet someone, a foreigner from different culture and ethnic or nation, and when he or she talks to you in your mother tongue/dialect, there is this immediate reception and ease, and that is the feeling and knitting power of languages/tongues. Three things here as implications, then: First, we Nagas have many different dialects and we are not surprised that even within a tribe there

are two completely different spoken dialects. There is a tendency to think at time that such is a disadvantage and it could be. Nonetheless, if we look at each of these different dialects, there are profound realities behind each one of them, and I believe that if we look closely to each of the many different dialects in our home Nagaland, we will see God’s amazing revelation and guidance and blessing that are ingrained in our many tongues. Second, recently our local papers have published articles on the issue of language in Nagaland, and alongside of it I do want to point out that we Nagas should understand and highly regard our own dialects despite we use English/Nagamese in schools, offices, and markets place. And specially Naga parents should highly value their own dialects and teach them to their children. I grief that today many of the young children don’t understand nor can speak their own mother tongues, especially children who are raised in towns and cities. Parents are to be blamed for that. I want to tell the parents that if our children don’t

R Zeliang’s historic winning of the “Vote of Confidence” of his Government has completed one year. He moved the “Confidence Motion” of his Government when 22 NPF dissident legislators led by G Kaito Aye threw an unprecedented challenge to his leadership in the NPF legislature party. The NPF had 38 legislators then and after 22 legislators challenging his leadership, he was sent into a complete defenselessness. But he survived the first political storm because NPF President Dr. Shurhozelie had swiftly placed seven of them including Aye under suspension. Soon, the beleaguered DAN Chief Minister turned the game of the NPF legislature leadership crisis into DAN Government crisis. The dissident NPF legislators criticized the move saying that they only challenged his leadership in the NPF legislature party. Interestingly, the dissident NPF legislators along with State’s two MPs had even paraded in front of Governor, PB Acharya, in Kohima Raj Bhavan. Unfortunately, the State Government was kept in suspense for about a month as almost all the institutions in the State were completely paralyzed following two groups – one led by Zeliang and the other by Aye – camping at de Oriental Hotel, Kohima and at Sovima, 7th Mile, Dimapur respectively. The worse sufferers were the common men. Acharya was finding difficulty as he could not interfere in a political party crisis while on the other, Zeliang managed to exhibit that all the legislators including eight Opposition Congress legislators in the State except that 22 dissident NPF leg-

islators were on his side. And with all these unprecedented strange bedfellows, he was trying to shift his political battle from the NPF turf to the Assembly by smartly working on to move a “Confidence Motion” of his seven-month-old Government. On 9 January 2015, Zeliang met Acharya with a proposal for the summoning of a Special Session of Nagaland Legislative Assembly for a “Confidence Motion” of his seven-month-old Government. Since no reply was forthcoming from the Governor, he had a “Cabinet Meeting” on 15 January 2015 and forwarded a recommendation for summoning a Special Session of Nagaland Legislative Assembly for a “Trial of Strength” of his government on 20 January 2015. This recommendation had literally sealed the Governor from seeking another route to delay his action. He (Governor) finally summoned a “Special Session” of Nagaland Legislative Assembly on February 5, 2015, for a “Trial of Strength” of Zeliang Ministry in Nagaland. But this writer told Zeliang prior to the “Trial of Strength” of his Ministry that the dissident NPF legislators would never vote against it (Confidence Motion). And exactly, the dissident NPF legislators voted in favor of the “Confidence Motion.” But history was created not because the dissident NPF legislators voted in favor of the “Confidence Motion” but the eight Opposition Congress legislators’ voting in favor of the “Confidence Motion.” The entire Members of the House voted in favor of the “Confidence Motion.” Zeliang later called it as “Oppositionless” and sometimes, interpreted the political drama as “coming together” for the

sake of finding an honorable and permanent solution to the protracted Naga political issue. Yet, there seem to be hardly any takers of such gimmicks. The BJP, an ally of the ruling DAN that kept telling that they would never go together with the Opposition Congress, continued to be part of the ruling DAN in the State. In spite of such development, the BJP and the Congress legislators could run the affairs of the State. Later, the eight Congress legislators, however, merged with the ruling major NPF. In fact, so many unfortunate developments had taken place in the last one year in the State. One of the major Naga underground outfits, NSCN (K) walked away from the 14-year old ceasefire with the Government of India. Eruptions of killings, ambushes, between the Security forces and the NSCN (K) started. Innocent minors and civilians lost their precious lives. We can still remember of the horrifying incidents at Wuzu in Meluri and Pangsha in Noklak. Banning of NSCN (K) for five years, extension of Disturbed Areas Act (DAA) in the entire State of Nagaland for another one year and more importantly, the Center’s declaration of the “Framework Agreement” with the NSCN (IM) were some of the significant developments that had taken place in last one year. The Government of India and the NSCN (IM) could not be convinced by the Zeliang’s Opposition-less Government to make public the contents of their “Framework Agreement” until today. It could not convince the Center to avoid hunting down the cadres of the NSCN (K) either. It is very unfortunate that since the State has an Opposition-less Government,

no “Question Hours” or “Debates” or “Discussions on any Public Importance” were there in the last couple of Assembly Sessions. It may be recalled that the last Nagaland Assembly Session had a record 25-minute Session – shortest in the history of Nagaland Assembly Sessions. When the State was passing through a critical phase in view of the “Framework Agreement” between the Government of India and the NSCN (IM), and the State needed the most to have a series of debates on the Floor of Assembly, they didn’t do it. They could have even called a Special Session to deliberate on the declaration of the “Framework Agreement” and moved a Resolution to urge the parties to make public the contents of the Agreement. What happened to the “Opposition-less” Government? Were they not telling that they all came together as “Oppositionless” for the sake of finding honorable and permanent solution to the longstanding Naga issue? Bottom-line: Ours is a Welfare State and the Government should be transparent and accountable to its citizens. The people of the State appear to be watching the Government as they are headed to a very unpredictable future. It will be a very costly affair indeed if it fails to activate itself as a responsible Government. Opposition is essential not only in democracy but also for a vibrant and strong Government. Democracy is meaningless without Opposition. The people are in the dark indeed as there is no Opposition in the State. Oken Jeet Sandham

know their mother tongues, they are missing something in their lives that can profoundly touch their souls and hearts in this life, and they will also miss the feeling and knitting power of tongues/dialects even with their own people/tribes. Why not talk to your children in your own dialects? Third, in presenting the premise that languages/dialects are God’s great and wise gifts, I have pointed out in this article, drawing English words –‘younger brother’ and what it is in Rengma Naga dialect to show the rich concept, philosophy, and ethics that are ingrained within it, which are so profound and Biblical, thus, implying, that if languages/dialects are God’s gifts, the concepts and philosophies coded in words and symbols are from God as it seem evident in the concept of “asikezengü” in Rengma Naga dialect. We Nagas then, must learn to celebrate and highly regard the many dialects in our home Nagaland, and take a closer look at these great and wise gifts of God to the Nagas. A cataclysmic end

T

hen I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more (ESV) Revelation 21:1. His-story is replete with prophetic utterances on the destruction of this world. The world has bled too much to survive for another epoch. We cry for peace when only violence is making up to the headline. The eruptions of war are far much more feared and dreaded than the natural catastrophes. Terrorism, suicide bombers and genocides have become a daily food to the mind. The callousness of our hearts testifies to the depravity of human race. The rise of global warming to the pollutions of air, water and soil are nothing but humans’ doing. Humans are strangling and choking their own throats. We are killing ourselves but do not stop craving for more and more. Lives to some have become a heaven on earth while, a hellish place to inhabit for some. The wealth of the rich is flowing but it never reaches to his neighbour down the lane. In their own pursuit of vision and goals, humanity has forgotten to be human. We have achieved freedom from others but not from fears within and without. This planet earth that once stood so rich, wild and green now turns to grey. The sound of animals and howling of waves are replaced with loud banging of machines and hi-tech equipment. Nature is ravished with chemicals and fertility loses its power to regain composure. The pollutions we created have taken a toll on us. What’s next? The earth is not going to hold much longer to satisfy the greed of the mortal souls. The day the earth die, humans will be buried with it.Nations are trembling at their own handmade nuclear weapons and deadly bombs. The future is not bright but bleak. One button pressed and humanity vanishes into thin air. We better end our wars and save ourselves but no, our pride hurts more than our annihilation. This world will continue to be a battleground so long as the new world order does not come into play. A cataclysmic ending with the big bang genesis of a new heaven and earth is the ultimate groaning of humans, even nature itself. Vebu Khamo, Kohima Bible College.

'New Top Gear pairing is like Joey and Chandler': Matt LebLanc

M

att LeBlanc is overwhelmed by the response to his new job on Top Gear, and has declared his pairing with Brit Chris Evans will be like "Joey and Chandler" from hit sitcom Friends. The actor, best known for playing Joey Tribbiani in 10 seasons of Friends, will team up with the British TV and radio host to present a new version of the popular

motoring show, which is reportedly the most widely watched factual television programme in the world. Matt reveals he was stunned by the response to his appointment, which hit headlines across the globe on Thursday (04Feb16), and he retreated to the sanctuary of a bar at his home in California to escape the attention. "I can't believe the response. I mean I knew Top Gear was a big show, but, wow, it was on the front

page of The New York Times, did you know that?" he tells Chris on his BBC Radio 2 show. "There was so much I couldn't read it all, my publicist said 'Did you know it's on the front page of The New York Times?' My day has been, thanks to Top Gear and the BBC, my day has been ducking paparazzi all day long, and now I'm relaxing with a glass of wine at my bar." The actor goes on to reveal he is looking forward to "mashing up some cars" with Chris, and

describes their pairing as like Friends duo "Joey and Chandler" - referring to Matt's character and Chandler Bing, played by Matthew Perry. Matt also admits he spent Thursday fielding phone calls from famous friends who are keen to make an appearance on the show, revealing Formula One driver Romain Grosjean and his Episodes co-star Stephen Mangan had been in touch.

Kurt Russell smashed a ‘priceless’ Zayn Malik's ‘Pillowtalk’ is the 150-year-old Heirloom guitar fastest selling single of 2016

I Officials at the Martin Guitar Museum in Pennsylvania are fuming after finding out a "priceless guitar" was destroyed during the filming of Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight.

t's been revealed that the guitar Kurt Russell smashes in Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight was in fact a priceless 150-year-old instrument lent to the production by the Martin Guitar Museum in Pennsylvania. According to an interview with SSN Insider, the film's sound designer Mark Ulano watched the whole scene unfold, and claims 64-year-old Hollywood vet Russell was not told the guitar was the real artifact before the scene took place. 'The guitar was from the 1870’s and was priceless. What was supposed to happen was we were supposed to go up to that point, cut, and trade guitars and smash the double. Well, somehow that didn’t get communicated to Kurt,' Ulano said.

At least there was some value derived from the destruction, as actress Jennifer Jason Leigh, who plays the guitar before it gets taken from her by Russell, wasn't expecting it either. 'When you see that happen on the frame, Jennifer’s reaction is genuine,' added Ulano. As a result, bosses at the museum have vowed never to loan any further items to moviemakers. "We were informed that it was an accident on set," Museum director Dick Boak says. "We assumed that a scaffolding or something fell on it. We understand that things happen, but at the same time we can't take this lightly. All this about the guitar being smashed being written into the script and that somebody just didn't tell the actor, this is

all new information to us. We didn't know anything about the script or Kurt Russell not being told that it was a priceless, irreplaceable artifact from the Martin Museum." "As a result of the incident, the company will no longer loan guitars to movies under any circumstances," he continues. "We want to make sure that people know that the incident was very distressing to us. We can't believe that it happened. I don't think anything can really remedy this. We've been remunerated for the insurance value, but it's not about the money. It's about the preservation of American musical history and heritage." Russell and director Tarantino have yet to comment on the incident.

ust under a year after announcing his departure from One Direction so he could ‘be a normal 22-year-old’, Zayn Malik has topped the UK singles chart. Malik’s debut solo outing ‘Pillowtalk’ is straight in at number one this week and has become the fastest-selling single of the year so far. According to the Official Charts Company, 'Pillowtalk' had combined

sales of 112,000 (including 4.97 million streams, knocking Shawn Mendes’ ‘Stitches’ off the top spot. ‘Pillowtalk’ is the first single from Malik’s upcoming album Mind of Mine which is scheduled for release on March 25th. ‘Pillowtalks’’ sales didn't seem to be affected by Malik pulling out of two major promotional appearances in the space of a week. Last week he pulled out of a guest spot on ‘The Graham Norton Show’

which was scheduled to air January 29th and on Monday he canceled an appearance on BBC Radio 1 with Greg James. The rest of this week’s chart sees former number one ‘Stitches’ fall two places to number three, while Jonas Blue’s ‘Fast Car’ has climbed up one place to number two. The top five is rounded off by Rihanna’s ‘Work’ which goes from 13 to four and Justin Bieber’s ‘Love Yourself’ at number five.

raping herself in Taiwan’s flag, Madonna actually managed to unite China and Taiwan in their outrage over her latest stunt. The Material Girl, who courts controversy, found it in her first concert in Taiwan Thursday night. As part of her Rebel Heart Tour, Madonna, 57, draped herself in the island’s flag. This immediately sparked outrage in China. The Asian super power continues to consider Taiwan a province, not an independent country. One Chinese fan tweeted, “Did you run out of your cone-shaped bras and had nothing better to wear?! Stupid Western woman with no modesty.” By wearing the Taiwanese flag during the encore, Madonna’s gesture was considered an acknowledgment of the island as a nation. Complicating the matter is that she posted a photo of herself in a blue star design. That design was used by a Taiwanese political party, the Kuomin-

tang, known for the bloodiest era in Taiwan. During the communist takeover of Taiwan, the Kuomintang killed as many as 30,000. That design lingers in the memory of many, though some in Taiwan were delighted and

tweeted how much they loved Madonna. For her part, Madonna seemed to revel in the experience and posted on Twitter: “Thank You TaiPei!! Your energy was electric and Amazing!#rebelhearttour”

After three singles - 'In My City', 'Exotic' and 'I Can't Make You Love Me' - PeeCee will be lending her voice to Ms Marvel, the adventurous and feisty counterpart of Captain Marvel in a new series and mobile game application called Marvel Avengers Academy. Ms Marvel is a familiar face in the comic book and anima-

While PeeCee is prevented from revealing anything about the project because of a non-disclosure clause in her contract her Mumbai-based publicist confirmed the news saying, "To build upon a fresh new 'Avengers' experience, several international artistes have been roped in to lend their voices to these iconic characters. Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom Emraan Hashmi to launch Cancer Awareness Mobile App refuels romance rumour

S

inger Katy Perry and actor Orlando Bloom have sparked romance rumours again as they were spotted cosying up to each other while attending the birthday dinner of Bloom's manager Aleen Keshishian. Bloom picked Perry up and the two headed to the birthday bash venue - the

Sunset Tower here. "She was nervous about being spotted and entered quickly trying to cover up," an eyewitness stated. Based on some photographs obtained by dailymail.co.uk, it appeared that the 31-year-old singer didn't want to be caught by paparazzi as she was seen covering her face with her hair

while inside Bloom's car. The eyewitness added that before entering the place, Bloom held the door open for Perry, who donned an oversized beige long coat atop a colourful dress. "Orlando opened the door for her. They were holding hands in the car. They each rested their arms on the center console and they were definitely interlocked," the eyewitness said. The party was also attended by the likes of Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Keshishian later posted on Instagram a photograph of herself along with some friends at a table, where Perry and Bloom also sat. Perry and Bloom exited the restaurant separately, but then they got in Bloom's car together and left the place. "He exited first and she followed a few minutes later and was seen talking to Bateman, his wife and a few others that were around," the eyewitness said. "But when the valet brought their call, Bloom and Perry hopped in and went back to her place together."

hile he does not like to be in the media glare, Emraan Hashmi does not shy away from promoting a good cause. We all know how he was devastated when his son, Ayaan was diagnosed with cancer two years ago. The doting dad spared no efforts for his son’s treatment taking him to Toronto, Canada where he got cured in six months for a tumour in his kidney. Since then, the actor has been at the forefront when

it comes to promoting initiatives for cancer awareness. Last year, he wrote a book about the emotional struggles faced by his wife, Parveen and him during their son’s treatment. As per a report in a leading national daily, the actor plans to launch a mobile app that helps spread awareness about cancer. The actor, who was a guest speaker at an event organized by the Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons last year has started working on setting up cancer detection centres across the

city. The upcoming mobile application is a step further in this cause of cancer awareness. Known for his meticulousness, the actor will work closely with a set of doctors known personally to him to create the same. He is also reportedly in talks with a software company to build the application that can be freely downloaded by one and all. With cancer treatment being such an expensive and stressful experience for all, early detection can go a long way in easing some of the woes.

here's no stopping Dolly Parton even though she recently celebrated her 70th birthday. The country icon was honored at the Movieguide Awards in LA on Friday night for her TV film Coat Of Many Colors and she told DailyMail.com she doesn't even think about slowing down. 'The only thing that would stop me is if I just couldn't do it for health reasons, but as long as I can do it I want to do it. I'll never retire,' she said.

The actress and humanitarian added: 'I wouldn't know what to do. I'm excited every day. I still love it.' Coat Of Many Colors, based on her experiences growing up in rural Tennessee, scored 13 million viewers for NBC when it was broadcast at Christmas. 'It really did well and everybody wants us to do some more and we are in discussions about what we should do and when we should do it,' she revealed.

Joining her at the awards ceremony that recognizes family-friendly movies and TV shows was the young actress who played Dolly as a child in the made-for-TV film. Pawan Negi the star of IPL 4th Kohima Inter Ward Tourney concludes auction, Watson costliest

C M Y K

bengaluru, February 6 (PtI): Australia's veteran all-rounder Shane Watson emerged as the biggest draw going for a whopping Rs 9.50 crore but it was young uncapped all-rounder Pawan Negi who turned heads with a mind-boggling deal of Rs 8.50 crore to be the costliest Indian buy in an otherwise low-key IPL players' auction here today. The 34-year-old Watson, who marked his return to form with a blazing century against India in the last T20, triggered an intense bidding war among three franchises before Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) clinched the deal with the highest package so far. Watson thus became the first million dollar buy of the auction with his package translating into USD 1.39 million. He was joined by Yuvraj Singh (Rs 7 crore to Sunrisers Hyderabad) soon after even though today's bid was far less than the Rs 16 crore he had garnered in the last auction. The duo were the big hits of the morning session which started with the auctioning for the 12 marquee players. Also walking away with

in the 23-year-old Negi, who has created a flutter with his selection for the Twenty20 World Cup next month. The youngster, who has played for Chennai Super Kings, had a bonanza

awaiting him just a day after being selected for the Indian team. No uncapped player has clinched the mammoth deal that he managed to get after an intense bidding war, which was won by Delhi Daredevils. Although Negi clinched the biggest deal but it was a rewarding day for India's uncapped players, many of whom fetched excellent packages. Some among them were Karun Nair (Rs 4 crore to Delhi Daredevils), India under-19 player Rishabh Pant (Rs 1.9 crore to Delhi), allrounder Deepak Hooda (Rs 4.2 crore to Sunrisers Hyderabad), Tamil nadu spinner M Ashwin (Rs 4.5 crore to Rising Pune Super Giants) and Krunal Pandya (Rs 2 crore to Mumbai Indians). Among the big names, veteran Indian pacer Ashish Nehra (Rs 5.5 crore to Sunrisers Hyderabad), Ishant Sharma (Rs 3.8 crore to Rising Pune Super Giants), Kevin Pietersen (Rs 3.5 crore to RPSG), and Dwayne Smith (Rs 2.3 crore to Gujarat Lions) were the top draws among the marquee players in the auction which was beamed live to millions of viewers.

Bradley seals Celtics’ stunning win over Cavs

los angeles, February 6 (aFP): Boston's Avery Bradley drilled a three-pointer as time expired as the Celtics rallied to stun NBA Eastern Conference leaders Cleveland 104-103 on their home floor. The Celtics snatched the victory after trailing by five points in the final 20 seconds. The Cavaliers, led by superstar LeBron James, had trailed by seven with four minutes to play. But they appeared to have gained control for good when guard J.R. Smith grabbed an offensive rebound off James's missed three-pointer with 22 seconds remaining and

Cleveland up 99-96. Cavs guard Kyrie Irving's free throws gave Cleveland a 103-99 lead with 7.5 seconds left, but Smith fouled Evan Turner as the Celtics swingman drove for a layup with four seconds left. Turner missed the free throw, but it was 103-101 when the ball went out of bounds off the Cavaliers, leaving the Celtics with possession and one final shot to win it. Bradley connected from the corner over Cleveland's Iman Shumpert, silencing the sellout crowd and handing the Cavaliers just their fourth home defeat of the season. James scored 30 points,

including 13 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough on a night the Cavaliers lost forward Kevin Love to a bruised left thigh. All-Star guard Isaiah Thomas scored 22 points and Turner had 19 points, 12 rebounds and six assists off the bench for the Celtics, who squandered a 9285 lead with 3:18 left before rallying. It was a second straight defeat for the Cavaliers, two nights after they fell to the Hornets in Charlotte. The San Antonio Spurs claimed their 42nd win of the season in devastating style as they humiliated the Dallas Mavericks 116-90 on the Mavs' home floor.

Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard scored 16 of his game-high 23 points in the first half while all five of Dallas' starters combined for 16 points before the interval. All-Star guard John Wall notched his first triple-double in almost two years, scoring 18 points with 13 rebounds and 10 assists to lift the Washington Wizards to a 106-94 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. Miami Heat center Hassan Whiteside delivered a more unusual triple-double of 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks to help the Miami Heat to a 98-95 victory over Charlotte.

Huth fires fairytale Leicester 6 points clear

Robert Huth celebrates after scoring the third goal for Leicester City. (PA Photo)

Manchester, February 6 (aFP): Robert Huth scored twice as Leicester City produced an astonishing demonstration of their Premier League title credentials by winning 3-1 at closest rivals Manchester City on Saturday. Huth broke the deadlock in the third minute from a Riyad Mahrez freekick and after Mahrez had netted a brilliant solo goal early in the first half, the German centre-back headed in his second goal from a corner on the hour. Sergio Aguero replied for City with a glancing header in the 87th minute -- his seventh goal in five games -- but a rain-lashed day at the Etihad Stadium belonged to Leicester. It was the most sensational win to date of their

fairytale 12-month rise from the bottom to the top of the table and left Claudio Ranieri's side six points clear of second-place City. Tottenham Hotspur, who host Watford later on Saturday, and Arsenal, who visit Bournemouth on Sunday, are both two points further back. Leicester have now won three league games in a row and remain on course for the most improbable English title triumph since promoted Nottingham Forest won the league in 1977-78. City, playing at home for the first time since Pep Guardiola was announced as the successor to manager Manuel Pellegrini, have now lost six league games this season -- as many as when they last won the league in 2014.
