MilaN, February 7 (ap): Pope Francis emphasized the right to food as fundamental in a video address Saturday to 500 experts starting work on a wide-ranging document aimed at raising awareness and proposing solutions to issues including hunger, obesity and food waste. Voters wait in a queue to cast their votes at a polling booth in New Delhi, Saturday, February 7. Voters cast ballots in the Indian capital on Saturday in an election that is seen as a litmus test for the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist party. Opinion polls ahead of the vote to choose New Delhi’s 70-member assembly suggest that Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party is either locked in a close contest with the upstart Common Man’s Party or will come in second. ing,” he tweeted. “(You) rejected politics of caste and religion. Hope final results (are) as per exit polls.” Putting up a brave face, BJP’s chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi disputed the
exit poll findings and said she was confident her party would win. “Wait till Feb 10,” she said, referring to the day the votes will be counted. Senior AAP leader Yogendra Yadav said his party was
headed for a landslide and could get more than 50 seats. There was no comment from BJP president Amit Shah, who along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi had picked Bedi, In-
dia’s first woman Indian Police Service officer and a former Kejriwal colleague, to head the BJP charge in Delhi, shocking the party’s established leadership in the capital. A record 67 per-
cent of Delhi’s 13.3 million electorate voted Saturday, with maximum polling recorded in low-income areas all over the city where the AAP enjoyed maximum appeal. A party will need at least 36 seats to form the government in Delhi. Today’s Chanakya also said that 53 percent of voters felt that Kejriwal, an income tax officer-turnedactivist-turned-politician, was best suited to be Delhi’s chief minister. Bedi got only 36 percent approval. It also said that all social classes in Delhi -- Dalits, Muslims, Banias, Brahmins, OBCs and Punjabis -- voted more for the AAP. The Muslim vote for the AAP was as high as 71 percent. Although the Congress was also in the race, it was squeezed out in the BJP-AAP battle. Congress president Sonia Gandhi was mellowed when asked about her party’s prospects. “Jo janta chahegi wahi hoga (What people want will happen)”, she said after casting her vote. The elections took place a year after Kejriwal resigned after being the chief minister for 49 tumultuous days.
GPRN/NSCN Kilo Secretary ‘infrastructure must for ne development’ wounded in ‘life attempt’ Morung Express News Dimapur | February 7
The Kilo (Home) Secretary of the GPRN/NSCN, Ghukiho T. Jimo was shot and wounded after unidentified gunmen waylaid his vehicle on the outskirts of Dimapur on February 8. The shooting occurred at the Niuland road between Naga United Village and Old Showuba village gate at round 10:30 am. Jimo, who was in the driver’s seat, sustained a gunshot wound on the right cheek; the bullet exiting from the left. He was admitted to the nearby CIHSR (Referral hospital) from where he was later referred to a hospital in Guwahati. His wife, their two minor children and an unidentified man were in the vehicle, who survived unhurt. According to the police, at least four people were involved in the shooting. The assailants came in a car, which overtook and intercepted the Mahindra Bolero Jimo was driving. Around five shots were fired, one hitting Jimo and at least one hitting the windshield, the police said. The assailants then took off towards Niuland further firing around two shots in the air. It is suspect-
ed that the Mahindra Bolero was trailed for some distance before it was waylaid.
GPRN/NSCN condemns The GPRN/NSCN, through a press release, condemned the “life attempt” on its Kilo Secretary, Ghukiho T. Jimo. Terming the incident as “repugnant and dastardly,” the release from its MIP stated that Jimo was on his way to visit his ailing mother-in-law with his wife and children at the time, which the assailants took advantage of. While stating that the shooting was carried out by “mercenaries” allegedly based in Suruhuto Camp, the release stated that Jimo “by God’s Grace miraculously escaped with only some injuries.” It observed that though maximum exercise should have been exercised when one is with their family, they “ironically” take this as an “advantage” and “Attacks while with families, throws Bombs into Homes and the likes.” The GPRN/NSCN maintained that “People’s call for peace under FNR (Forum for Naga Reconciliation) is our ‘Foremost Priority’ but repeated ‘Provocation’ may not go too well when we decide that ‘Enough is Enough’.”
Pope emphasizes right to food There is food for everyone yet not everyone can eat continues to be an issue
C M Y K
Pope John Paul II -- whereby there is food for everyone yet not everyone can eat -- continues to be an issue “despite the multiplication of organizations and responses by the international community on nutrition.” The pope addressed a session of experts drafting the so-called Milan Charter that seeks commitments from governments, organizations and individuals during the Expo 2015 world fair to resolve such issues as ensuring food security, decreasing food waste and combatting both hunger and obesity. Italy is hosting the Expo 2015 from May
1-Oct. 31. Francis gave his blessing to the delegates, and some guidelines, urging them to focus on resolving “the structural causes of poverty,” not just address emergencies, and to maintain the dignity of the individual at the heart of economic policy. He also urged them to show courage in protecting the planet “the mother of everything that asks respect and not violence.” The Italian government intends the Milan charter to be the legacy of Expo 2015, increasing awareness of the universal right to a “healthy, safe and sufficient” food supply.
KolKata, February 7 (pti): Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla today said that without development of infrastructure in the North Eastern states, the Look East Policy - which has recently been changed to Act East Policy will not work in the region. The Look East Policy has been there for 15 years but there is no impact of it on the region’s economy, he said on the sidelines of an event organised by CII here. He emphasised on improving connectivity through
roads and waterways for a positive economic impact on the region. With the given economic condition and the quantum of funds needed, the seven states in the region cannot build infrastructure on their own to speed up development and thus central funds are needed, the chief minister said. He called for greater allocation of funds from the Centre for infrastructure development in the region. The government of Mizoram
is presently constructing a roadlink to the international border with Myanmar which is expected to boost trade and commerce in the state. “Institutional finance is a grave concern in the entire northeast region and development of infrastructure is costly. The Centre needs to step forward and develop the region,” he said. Tourist inflow into the northeast is one of the lowest in the country as there was not enough infrastructure while on the other
hand due to lack of tourists, the area is not getting enough funds, he said. “This results in a vicious cycle from which we need to break through and the Centre needs to act on the Act East policy,” he said. Thanhawla said, only 11 per cent of the total hydel power potential has been leveraged so far in the region and there is a huge investment potential to build hydel projects. “More than 50,000 MW of power can be generated in the region,” he said.
tuensang tense amidst uneasy calm
Abducted mother and daughter released Morung Express News Dimapur | February 7
Saturday saw uneasy calm in Tuensang town even though no violence was reported. The District administration promulgated Section 144 of the CrPC for 36 hours following a violent Friday which witnessed two brutal deaths, of a minor boy and a policeman, a consequence of the surfacing of a feud between two tribes. The town remained deserted with all commercial establishments downing shutters. Schools and colleges were also closed for the day. Citizens remained indoors. There was more than enough reason to be afraid and stay on guard. After the Friday’s killing, incidents of arson in pockets of Tuensang town were reported till late in the evening. At least, three houses were partially burned at BOC; NAP and RP gate area after mobs went on rampage and tried to set the houses ablaze. On Saturday morning, the policeman who became the last victim of the conflict was accorded a solemn funeral at Chessore village. Nagaland Police announced an ex-gratia of Rs. Two Lakh and an
Dialogue, not violence is the only answer
KohiMa, February 7 (MexN): Governor of Nagaland, PB Acharya, has expressed concern over the recent incidents at Tuensang in which two persons were killed, including one minor boy. He has appealed to the people of Tuensang to maintain peace and harmony among the tribes. He also appealed to the NGOs, including student bodies, to help maintain peace and healthy atmosphere, “which is essential for development.” A press release from the OSD to the Governor stated the Governor’s observation that violence is not the answer to any dispute. “Dialogue is the only answer.” Further, the Governor has requested the Deputy Commissioners of respective districts to take initiatives to solve the problem in the initial stage itself. “Our default should not be the reason for the violence,” stated the press release. Further, Acharya has expressed that those responsible for violence and murder should be brought to book immediately to “restore confidence in the minds of the affected people.” He called for Government officials to understand the situation well
in advance and “try to solve the problem before it flares up, for which contact with the public will be helpful to understand the mood of the people.” “Our intelligence network should be tuned up with the realities and government officials should take preventive measures to solve the dis-
ensang District leading to the loss of precious lives. A press note from the Media Cell of the CM’s office informed that the CM held a marathon meeting with top State Civil and Police officials along with elected members from Tuensang district till the night of February 6. The CM then directed officials to take immediate actions to bring the situation under control. He further directed them to take all preventive measures to avoid any situation as “the administration should not be seen as performing the role of only a reporting agency.” The CM has appealed to all citizens of Tuensang district to shun all forms of violence and killings as “any issue can be resolved by sitting across the table and not through such means of violence.” He has also cautioned all concerned to be wary of vested interests who may be instigating the people in order to fuel the situation. While all possible measures would be taken by the Government, he appealed to the Civil Societies to step forward and mediate so that all misunderstandings are resolved, and peace is restored in the area.

He was rushed to the hospital by his friends. However, the mob which had risen in number, and on the hunt, reached the
putes,” it was stated. The Governor has appreciated measures announced by the State Government for restoring normalcy in Tuensang district. He has instructed officials and villagers concerned to follow the guidelines issued by the State Government, and that compensations announced “must reach the victims in time without delay.” CM appeals Tsg citizens to ‘shun all forms of violence’ Chief Minister of Nagaland, TR Zeliang has expressed deep anguish over the turn of events in Tu-
hospital. The already injured victim was killed some distance away from the hospital after a failed attempt made by friends to carry him out of the hospital to safety. According to reports, the victim’s friends also received injuries. Five people were arrested after the rampage with the police confiscating one .22 calibre country-make pis-
tol from their possession. The brutal action was apparently in retaliation to the killing of a 15 year old boy at the fields between Sotukur and Chingmelen village in the morning. The mother of the victim and sister were abducted but later released after civil societies, police and administration went on a massive hunt and pleaded for their release. According
to the police, the mother and child were rescued around 12:30 midnight. In view of the tense situation and fearing escalation, additional security of two companies of Nagaland Armed Police (NAP) was rushed to Tuensang after the incident. Section 144 CrPC which was promulgated for 36 hours will end Sunday at 6:00 am.
