JAcWr to withdraw slP in sc provided UlBs poll completed

Kohima, January 14 (mExn): The Joint Action Committee on Women Reservation (JACWR) has, in principle, agreed to withdraw the Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by it in the Supreme Court. A press release from the JACWR Convenor Abeiu Meru and Co-Convenor Dr. Rosemary Dzuvichu stated today that the decision of the Nagaland State Government to hold elections with reservation for women has made the case filed in the Supreme Court “infructuous” or fruitless. So, “to reciprocate the gesture” of the State Government and “to allay the fears of tribal organisations that the case filed by us in the Supreme Court would infringe on Article 371 A of the Constitution of India,” the JACWR has agreed to the “appeal of the Chief Minister” made to JACWR members at an emergency meeting at his residence at Dimapur today to “withdraw the SLP filed by us in the Supreme Court, provided the ongoing process of elections to the ULBs could be completed as notified by the State Government.” The Committee once again expressed pain at the course of

nEW yorK, January 14 (ianS): Findings now show that consumption of hot red chilli peppers can lead to a 13% reduction in total mortality, primarily in deaths due to heart disease or stroke. People who were regular consumers of hot red chilli peppers showed lower cholesterol. Although the researchers are not certain about the mechanism by which peppers could delay mortality, “transient receptor potential (TRP) channels, which are primary receptors for pungent agents such as capsaicin -the principal component in chilli peppers -- may in part be responsible for the observed relationship,” said Mustafa Chopan from University of Vermont in the US. Capsaicin is believed to play a role in cellular and molecular mechanisms that prevent obesity and modulate coronary blood flow and also possesses anti-microbial properties. Peppers and spices have been for centuries thought to be beneficial in the treatment of diseases. For the study, the team examined more than 16,000 Americans who were followed for up to 23 years. The results found that consumers of hot red chilli peppers tended to be “younger, male, white, Mexican-American, married, and to smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol and consume more vegetables and meats... had lower HDL-cholesterol, lower income, and less education,” in comparison to participants who did not consume red chilli peppers.

Further, the ENPO resolved to “fervently appeal” to the Eastern Naga Women’s Organisation (ENWO) to “immediately withdraw” from the Joint Action Committee on Women Reservation (JACWR) “in the larger interest of ENPO public.”

Front has now decided to initiate “stern disciplinary action” against candidates who withdraw their nomination papers. The NPF adopted this resolution at a meeting of all NPF officials held at NPF President Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu’s residence in Kohima today. The party expressed “dismay” over the “use of force” by some organizations in “preventing some of the NPF Ticket

holders in filing their nomination papers.” It appealed to the Naga Hoho, ENPO, all tribe Hohos and the citizens of Nagaland to “cooperate and support” the Government’s decision to conduct the elections. A press release from NPF Working President Apong Pongener also clarified that NPF tickets for the upcoming elections were “given to Primary and Active membership hold-

Nuklutoshi is a legally appointed Minister: NPF The NPF has taken strong exception to the Ao Senden’s usage of the term “so call (sic) Minister” that it applied to Nagaland State Cabinet Minister Nuklutoshi while “debarring” him from entering Ao territory. A press note from NPF President Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu today reminded that Nuklotoshi was elected from 22-Arkakong Assembly Constituency in 2013 General Election in Nagaland by securing 8,544 votes defeating his nearest rival by a margin of over 1000 votes. He was appointed as a Cabinet Minister by the Governor of Nagaland under the recommendation the Chief Minister. Oaths of Allegiance

and Secrecy were administered to him by the Governor of Nagaland on May 24, 2014 at Raj Bhavan, Kohima. Since then, he has been discharging his duties as a Cabinet Minister holding the portfolios of National Highway and Mechanical Departments. All these steps were taken up strictly as per the provisions of Article 164 (1) of the Constitution of India. Noting that Nuklutoshi is a “legally appointed Minister,” the NPF President stated that Nuklutoshi has been “performing his duties as a Minister (as per) the decision of the Government to conduct Municipal and Town Elections.” “Any one (who) calls him ‘socalled Minister’ is expressing not only to disgrace Minister Nuklotoshi but more serious is that it challenges the validity of the Indian Constitution. As a result, the expression has become illegal,” stated the NPF President. Further, he suggested that if this was done “intentionally,” it will be viewed seriously, but if it was a “mistake” done as a result of emotions, then the “best course” for Ao Senden would be to “withdraw the resolution” as “tendering apology” in such a case “is not sufficient.”

Thus, the house resolved to oppose the ULB elections ‘in principle’ within the ENPO jurisdiction, asked its six federating units to abstain from participating in the polls and directed all intending candidates to withdraw their nomination papers on or before January 17. The ENPO felt that the elections

The NPF also reiterated that it “shall go ahead with the election as per the schedule announced by the State Election Commission.”

A man suspected of involvement in the murder of a woman at Bhandari was found dead on January 14. The body of the suspect, Samuel Jongkor was found hanging from a tree in a forested area at Boro Lengri II, which falls under Dillai Police Station, Karbi-Anglong Autonomous District. Accused of being behind the Bhandari killing, the suspect, reported to be in his 40s, was reportedly on the run and missing from Bhandari since December 31. The woman’s body, whom he was accused of killing, was found in a staff quarter of the 7th NAP head-

quarters, Bhandari on January 8. As per the preliminary report, the body was discovered by woodcutters at around 9:00 am-10:00 am. SDPO, Bhandari when contacted said that the suspect’s body was taken into custody by the Dillai PS. UNC opposes Indo-Myanmar border fencing SEnapaTi, January 14 (nnn): The United Naga Council (UNC) has strongly opposed the construction of border fence along the Indo-Myanmar border at Pangsha village in Tuensang, Nagaland. Terming it as “great injustice” committed on the Naga people, the UNC stated that such border fencing is bound to “deprive the inherent rights of the Naga family from communicating with each other.” The UNC further maintained that the “divisive policy” to create a rift in the Naga family should be “thwarted” by every Naga. A statement released by the UNC today called for all Naga organisations to join hands against the “sinister design to separate us physically, emotionally and culturally,” terming it an

act “against humanity.” The Naga peoples can “no longer tolerate external forces continuing to separate the Naga family in all respects,” it maintained. “For how long and for how far the Naga family will be exposed to such sinister designs to annihilate us?” it asked. Further, the UNC asserted that “Our land is contiguous and it shares traditional boundaries with other nation(s), community(s) or village(s). We the Naga people even today protest against the bifurcation of our ancestral homeland by the colonialists by placing us in different countries, and also, in different states in India without prior knowledge and consent of the people. The Naga people will not tolerate further division of our land and people under any circumstances by any kinds of artificial barriers.”

Three independent candidates sign ‘withdrawal bond’

WoKha, January 14 (mExn): The Lotha Hoho has offered intending candidates the ‘option’ to “withdraw nomination” through the Lotha Hoho till 12:00 am of January 16. However, any candidate failing to withdraw their nomination papers will be subject to “non cooperation, social exclusion, barring from leadership, responsibility for any eventuality relating to ULB elections 2017,” stated the Lotha Hoho today. A press statement from Lotha Hoho

Chairman Mhao Humtsoe and General Secretary Mhondamo Ovung informed that in compliance of the Lotha Public Resolution of January 8, affirmed on January 12 and reaffirmed on January 14, for withdrawal of nomination papers to ULB (Wokha and Bhandari Town Councils) elections 2017, a meeting of general public of Wokha town, surrounding villages, all Lotha frontal organisations, was held at Town Hall, Wokha, today in order to “to enforce the process of withdrawal of nomination.” “Many intending candidates expressed willingness to withdraw their nomination,” claimed the press statement, however noting that January 14 be-

state Government is ‘misusing’ power: nPcc Accuses the government of flouting rules and regulation to serve its interest

Dimapur, January 14 (mExn): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) today charged the State Government of misusing power and misleading the innocent general public by extending nomination date for Urban Local Bodies (ULBs). The Party is “dumbfounded” to observe the misuse of power by the Government of the day, a press note from NPCC Vice President, Khriedi Theünuo noted, further accusing the former of using the State Election Commission (SEC) to serve its own interest. “The NPF-led DAN government in the State, which has developed the habit of turning the rules and regulations for their own motives has once again misguided the people by using the Na-

galand Municipal Election Rules 2003 in extending the last date of filing nominations to the January 1, 2017 elections to ULBs,” it said, According to NPCC, while the January 7 SEC’s notification stated “in exercise of the powers under sub rule (7) of Rule 20 of the Nagaland Municipal Election Rules 2003…,” it is applicable subject to the provisions of sub-rule (6), which stated that “The late date for making nomination, their scrutiny and withdrawal shall not be public holidays. If any of the last dates for these purposes happens to be a public holiday such nominations, scrutiny or withdrawal shall take place, the next succeeding day, which is not a public holiday”. The Party reminded the SEC that last date of nomination “as per the programme schedule” for Municipal and Town Council Election in Nagaland was fixed for January 7, 2017 which was not a public holiday.

Felines for Bears: Kohima, Dimapur leave for Kerala Morung Express News Dimapur | January 14

Two Asiatic bears from the Nagaland Zoological Park (NZP) headed for Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala today as part of an Animal Exchange Programme with the Thiruvananthapuram Zoo. NZP recently received a pair of Royal Bengal Tigers in exchange for the two bears christened Kohima and Dimapur. A press release from the NZP Director, Sentichuba Aier stated that Kohima (male) and Dimapur (female) were successfully transported to the Dimapur Railway Station “after completing all formalities” enroute Thiruvananthapuram for an epic 3880 km journey. An NZP official added that the “special coach” carrying the two healthy bears will briefly

ing a non working day (second Saturday), the office of the Returning Officer was closed; but in the meeting hall, “three Independent candidates, namely Zaremo Murry, Janponthung Ngullie and Abel Ennio, signed their Withdrawal Bond.” “Other candidates have also assured that they will withdraw with the NPF Party candidates assuring the house, through N. Mhabemo Ezung (candidate for ward No. 11), that they would withdraw collectively,” the Lotha Hoho stated. The Hoho, “along with the Lotha public,” expressed “deep appreciation” to the candidates who have withdrawn their nomination, and urged all candidates to withdraw early.

stopover at Lumding Railway Station. At Lumding, the coach will be hitched to another train for an uninterrupted journey till Thiruvananthapuram. The release added that the two Royal Bengal Tigers are presently under quarantine inside the Zoo. Enthusiasts can visit the duo only after the completion of the quarantine period. It did not specify how long the quarantine period would last. When the felines reached Dimapur on January 9, Director Aier had stated that they will be kept under quarantine for atleast two weeks allowing them to “acclimatize” with the weather condition here. The headcount at the fledgling NZP is expected to increase as more animals are expected to join. A pair of White Tigers is expected to arrive at

the NZP in a few moths time. Once bereft of big cats, the feline population at the NZP is steadily increasing. Back in July 2013, the NZP welcomed into its abode an abandoned male leopard named Doom from Kaziranga to share space with the NZP’s resident female leopard Rani. Named after the place where he was found abandoned at 3 months old, Doom was raised at Kaziranga’s Centre For Wildlife Rehabilitation & Conservation. He was found at a Tea Estate at Doom Dooma, Tinsukia, Assam. NZP is spread over a sprawling 176 hectares in area with over two-thirds of the area left for more residents. A dearth of developmental funding from the state government has hampered expansion efforts for building enclosures.

In this regard, that NPCC opined that the rules cited by the SEC, “which must have been done in consultation and under the directive of the State Government,” does not have any provisions for extension of the dates for nomination because of “not receiving nominations.” “This is clear violation of the election process by the concern authority,” NPCC asserted adding that such misinterpretation of the given rules to mislead the innocent general public by those at the helm of affair to serve their interest is “not acceptable in the general interest of the public and also against the laid down rules for conducting the elections.” If the State Government does not postpone and re-schedule ULBs elections after implementing the given rules for the general welfare, NPCC said that it would not deter to take up the matter with “appropriate forum.”

Assam celebrates Magh Rajnath seeks report on Manipur ambush Bihu with traditional fervour imphal, January 14 (ianS): Home Minister Rajnath Singh has sought a report on Thursday's ambush on National Highway 37 in Manipur in which one person was killed and three injured, officials said on Saturday. Two of the injured persons are in the ICU of a private hospital in Imphal. The incident took on a disturbing dimension as the United Naga Council, which has imposed an indefinite blockade against Manipur since November 1, said the Manipur forces had carried out the ambush. However one wounded victim said: "About eight tribals in combat fatigues climbed down from the nearby mountain and opened fire at us. Speaking tribal dialect, some of them mocked us and opened fire again." Meanwhile, police investigation has not made any headway and no arrest has been made. No underground organisation

has claimed responsibility for the ambush. Trucks, oil tankers and private vehicles ply on NH 37 under CRPF escort. "Manipur had sought 60 companies of the central paramilitary personnel to escort the vehicles and gain area domination. However the centre has despatched just 29 companies," officials said. Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh told IANS that from the very beginning, Manipur has been urging the central government to set up a highway protection force since NH 2 and 37 are the only lifelines of Manipur. "However the centre maintains that as law and order is a state subject Manipur should deploy its forces along the highways," he said. On Friday there was a total shutdown of markets, government offices, educational institutes and other facilities in protest against the ambush.

Guwahati, January 14 (ianS): Assam on Saturday celebrated Magh Bihu with traditional fervour along with the burning of a religious bonfire (meiji). Although the 'Magh' month starts from January 15 (Sunday), Bihu festivities begin from the last day of the 'Puh' of the Assamese calendar. 'Uruka' or the day of the grand feast, which people celebrate with family and friends, was marked on Friday night. On Saturday morning, people across the state set fire to meiji and offered prayers to the fire God. The lighting of the meiji is performed by the elders of the family. Tripura troopers to be deployed for Punjab, UP polls aGartala, January 14 (ianS): Two battalions of Tripura State Rifles (TSR) will be deployed in the upcoming Punjab and Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, an official said here on Saturday. "Two battalions of TSR personnel led by Commandants Pinaki Samanta and Kerry Marak left here on Friday for Punjab," a Tripura home department official told IANS. He said "The TSR personnel would be posted in Punjab according to the direction of the Election Commission and after the Punjab assembly elections they would move to Uttar Pradesh." The official said that following the request of the union home ministry the counter-insurgency trained force has been sent to the two states. Assembly elections in Punjab will take place on February 4 while Uttar Pradesh would go to the polls in seven phases between February 11 and March 8. "Besides providing security during Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010, the India Reserve (IR) battalions of TSR were earlier sent to Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Haryana, Nagaland and Mizoram to provide security during polls," the official said. The TSR battalions, trained in anti-insurgency operations, were constituted in March 1984 to deal with terrorism. Seventy five per cent of the troopers are from Tripura while the remaining are from across the country. There are 12 TSR battalions in the state, of which nine are India Reserve battalions, which means they can be deployed anywhere in India by the Home Ministry. The central government has approved the raising of three more TSR battalions. "The TSR has been modelled on the pattern of Border Security Force and Assam Rifles. It has played an important role in curbing four and a half decades old terrorism in Tripura," the official added.

and the festivities continue for more than a week. People visit friends and family where they are served different traditional food items including laru (laddu), pitha (rice cakes), flattened rice with curd and jaggery. Markets in different parts of the state remained busy since Friday morning with people from different walks of life vying for the best of the fresh produce. Marking the festival, traditional sports are also played by all. "We have organised traditional sports like 'Rosi tona' (Tug of war) among the women and children of our locality. The basic idea is just to make the day full of fun and give the people of the area a break. It went

off well and everyone enjoyed," said Rajesh Bharali of Guwahati's Kalapahar area. Likewise many other localities also organised singing and art competitions among the kids to fill the day with fun. However, the festival's major attractions of bulbul bird and buffalo fights at Haigriva Madhav Temple at Hajo near Guwahati and at Ahatguri in Morigaon district, were amiss this year due to a ban by the Supreme Court. "It's a history and a cultural legacy of the people of Hajo to organise the bulbul fights. However, we would not to hold the event due to the apex court's ban," said Head administrator of the Haigriva Madhav temple, Shiva Prasad Sarma.

NWU condemns incarceration of UNC leaders tahamzam, January 14 (mExn): The Naga Women’s Union (NWU) has condemned the continued incarceration of UNC President Gaidon Kamei and Information & Publicity Secretary SK Stephen who were arrested on November 25, 2016. Terming the existing imbroglio as being “political” and not law and order related, the NWU in a press release from its Publicity Wing insisted that the issue can be settled “if the Government of Manipur has the political will to do so.” It argued that holding the UNC President and Information & Publicity Secretary as prisoners will not solve the crisis. “Rather, it will only aggravate the situation,” the union maintained and called upon the Government of Manipur to release the two at the earliest. Further extending its solidarity to the two incarcerated leaders, the NWU reminded the Manipur Government that it will be held responsible for any eventualities.

Peren, January 14 (DIPr): With 48 (fortyeight) trekkers, the Poilwa Students’ Union Nagaland (PSUN), on January 8 and 9, trekked to Tangkwak Rezai and Nrai-Kauba. The trekking programme was aimed at showcasing the student community the vast territorial extent of the village, the virgin natural beauties and also the historical importance of the places. The team was led by the union’s Vice President, Heulungying Hengwang and Librarian, Machi Mbung. According to the ancient folklore, the Tangkwak Rezai, a pond, which is about 15- 20 kms from the village is said to be the place from where paddy (rice) originated. The Tangkwak Rezai at all times and seasons is said to have a ripe paddy plant in the middle of the pond (rezai).

It is believed that a rat carried the seed from the same plant and dropped it to the Tangzangkie valley (currently a wet-terrace cultivated area of the village), from where the villagers found the plant and started to grow it for consumption. Only the luckiest, toughest and bravest get to see the plant at Tangkwak Rezai, and some few people have claimed to have seen it. Nrai-Kauba (lovers fall), a double fall waterfall, about 10 to 13 km from the village came to be so called after a young couple truly in love were washed away by the waters of the Nrai-Kauba. The young couple, whose parents refused to allow their marriage decided to run away to a far away land, away from all those opposing their love. Beginning their escape trip on a wet and rainy summer evening, hoping to grow

ou have learnt about nouns, haven’t you? There are different types of nouns. One classification of nouns is as proper nouns and common nouns. A proper noun is the name of a particular person, event, place or thing. Examples are Freddie, Canada, Coca Cola, Christmas etc. Proper nouns begin with a capital letter. They are not preceded by articles such as ‘a’, or ‘an’ but are sometimes preceded by ‘the’ when it is part of the proper name, as in ‘The Philippines’. A common noun, on the other hand, is not the name of a particular person, thing or place, but is a word that is used to refer to the class or group to which the proper nouns belong. For example, Freddie is a proper noun, but boy is a common noun. Canada is a proper noun whereas country is a common noun. Generally common nouns do not start with a capital letter, unless it is the first word of a sentence. In contrast to a proper noun, a common noun can be preceded by an article such as ‘a’, ‘an’ or ‘the’. It is perfectly correct to say ‘a boy’ but not ‘a Freddie’.

id you know that big windmills catch the wind in their sails to help produce energy strong enough to grind corn into flour, pump water, or even produce electricity? Let’s show you how to make a tiny one just for fun! What you will need: 1. Pins with a large head 2. Small beads 3. Pencils with a rubber on the end 4. Sheets of coloured paper 5. Scissors 6. Pencil 7. Ruler Using the ruler, measure out and draw two squares the same size on two different-coloured pieces of paper. Cut out the squares. Using the ruler again, draw two diagonal lines across each square so they cross in the middle. Cut only two thirds of the way along each line, as shown. Hold the squares of paper together. Bend the paper back along each cut line into the centre, as shown, and hold the corners down. Push a pin through all the corners of the paper, then through a bead and into the rubber at the end of a pencil. Make sure the sharp end of the pin doesn’t stick out of the rubber. Also make sure that the point of your pencil is not sharp. Blow on the windmill to make it spin. You can make bigger or smaller sails by using different sized squares of paper. If the paper is very thick, you will only need one square of paper. You can make bigger or smaller sails by using different sized squares of paper. If the paper is very thick, you will only need one square of paper. Now its time to go out and test your little windmill! The faster the sails of your windmill turn, the stronger is the wind! Have fun!

young man had been caught in a daring act of theft and had been condemned to be executed for it. He expressed his desire to see his mother, and to speak with her before he was led to execution, and of course this was granted. When his mother came to him he said: “I want to whisper to you,” and when she brought her ear near him, he nearly bit it off. All the bystanders were horrified, and asked him what he could mean by such brutal and inhuman conduct. “It is to punish her,” he said. “When I was young I began with stealing little things, and brought them home to mother. Instead of rebuking and punishing me, she laughed and said: It will not be noticed. It is because of her that I am here to-day.” “He is right, woman,” said the Priest; “the Lord hath said: Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old he will not depart there from.”

Entrepreneur helps missionary doctors save lives 14 Surgeons in a Country of 10 Million

"K

ibuye Hospital is about three hours outside the capital city. Between here and there there's no surgeon. The majority, all except for me, of the surgeons in Burundi work in the capital city," Fader said. And for a population of 10 million people, there are only 13 surgeons, with Fader becoming number 14. CBN News was granted exclusive, behind-the-scenes access to Kibuye's operating rooms as Fader and other physicians prepared for surgeries. "I typically schedule one or two surgeries a day," Fader told CBN News as he scrubbed his hands preparing for an operation. "{More often than not} We end up doing 10 surgeries a day." Like many other medical missionaries serving across Africa, Fader raises his own support. "It would be difficult to find a place in the U.S. where I could have even a smidgen of the impact that

even thousand miles from the shores of America lies the tiny African nation of Burundi. It's poor, hungry and recently declared the world's unhappiest country. But now there's hope as a wealthy Jewish philanthropist and Christian doctors work to help some of Burundi's most vulnerable. This landlocked nation in the

heart of Africa is easy to miss on a map. Roughly the size of Maryland, Burundi is one of the continent's smallest countries. It used to be the third-poorest in the world. Now it's number one. In 2013, American Jason Fader moved his wife, Heather, and their two kids to Burundi to serve as a missionary doctor in a remote part of the country. "The average person lives on less than a dollar a day," Fader explained

to CBN News. "I can't really fathom how to live on less than a dollar a day, and yet that is what the majority of the people in this country do." Fader's home away from home is Kibuye Hope Hospital, a Christian facility located in the central part of Burundi. Kibuye was a ministry of the Free Methodist Church in Burundi since the 1940s but is now under the care of Hope Africa University. Fader is the assistant medical director at Kibuye Hope Hospital.

one surgeon can have here in the middle of Africa. There are 2 million people in this area that have no surgeon and I'm happy to be here to care for them," Fader said. Half of Burundi has no access to potable water. Some 70 percent

of the nation lives below the poverty line. There's no healthcare to speak of, so as you can imagine, this small Christian hospital here in a remote corner of Burundi acts as a lifeline for tens of thousands of people.

described to CBN News. "During dry season, we can have as little as two hours and even sometimes no power during the day." Rachel McLaughlin says she's one of just 20 OB-GYNs in Burundi. CBN News was in the operating room with McLaughlin as she prepared for a C-Section. As is customary at Kibuye Hope

Hospital, all the missionary doctors begin each surgery with prayer. "Lord God, I thank you for this chance to be here today," McLaughlin prayed while holding the hands of woman about to deliver her fourth child. "We lift this woman and her baby. I pray for a safe delivery in your name I pray, amen."

Following the Call of God

Mark and Erica Gerson, Jewish philanthropists helping missionary doctors save countless lives across Africa

S

o here's an interesting angle to this story: Thousands of miles from the hospital, in downtown New York City, Mark Gerson, a Jewish businessman, has decided to personally get involved in helping these Christian medical missionaries change the destinies of some of Africa's poorest. Gerson is the co-founder and chairman of Gerson Lehrman Group. "The Torah, the Bible, tells us 36 times, more than it tells us anything else, to love the stranger and who in the world is more of the stranger than the African poor in need of medical care," Gerson told CBN News from his office in Manhattan. For several years, Gerson and his wife, Erica, have given millions of dollars to support missionary doctors across Africa. "It's been an honor and a privilege for my wife, who is a rabbi, and I to partner with these -- and I chose this term carefully -- these 'sacred people,' these Christian medical missionaries, who are sacrificing everything, to deliver medical care to the poor in Africa who otherwise would simply be without it," Gerson said. He and long-time friend, Dr. Jon Fielder, an American medical missionary serving in Kenya, co-founded African Mission Healthcare Foundation.

Fielder says through his friendship, Gerson has seen first-hand the dedication of these missionary doctors. "Medical missionaries tend to come for years or decades and stay and learn the language and learn the culture and develop deep relationships in their communities," Fielder told CBN News. "He {Gerson} sees how far his generous giving can go here in Africa and he sees the return on his philanthropic investment." Last month, Gerson presented the first-ever L'Chaim Prize for Outstanding Christian Medical Missionary Service to Dr. Jason Fader and his team. "When I first saw that this prize was from a Jewish entrepreneur I certainly did a double-take," Dr. Fader admitted. But soon he knew there was more to Gerson than just his generosity. "I think it also speaks to the depth of Mark's faith; he sees the care for the poor, the care for the stranger as part of his faith tradition and I have a lot of respect for that," Fader said. Fielder says a prize of this magnitude, to one African hospital, is far reaching. "The L'Chaim prize will provide half-a-million dollars to Kibuye Hope Hospital which will help it complete a new surgical building, start an internship -- the first in the

country for medical school graduates -- renovate a laboratory in the capital, and help about 350 people walk again with orthopedic supplies," Fielder explained. Gerson insists there's no one better who delivers a higher return on investment than Christian medical missionaries serving in Africa. As an example, he points to what Dr. Fader and his team at the hospital did in 2015. "He {Dr. Fader} enabled 35,000 in-patient and out-patient visits, he enabled 1,200 surgeries and he enabled 800 cataract operations all for half-a-million dollars," Gerson explained. "That to me is the most extraordinary ROI {Return On Investment} that anyone deploying capital, commercially or philanthropically, can expect." Fader says Gerson's generous gift will continue to touch and heal the lives of countless people across this nation. "Kibuye Hospital, you know, is not like a hospital in the U.S. Sometime we struggle with running water and electricity and basic infrastructure," Fader said. "And yet, it's amazing how much you can do with so little. You know we are not doing laparoscopic esophagectomy, but we are helping people walk. We are saving lives at the rate of sometimes, thousands per a year."

aith in Christ and the opportunity to help the less fortunate are just some of the reasons that compel these doctors to serve in less-thanideal conditions. "God has called us to this place, so He has called us to hard work, but He has called us to good work and I think that we can see His redeeming story when we have the eyes to look for it," McLaughlin said. McLaughlin admits that at times, "It really feels like we are on our own out here and that can be hard."

She and the other medical missionaries serving at Kibuye are confronted daily with just how limited resources they have to work with. "In a typical America hospital, where you have so many resources at your disposal, to be here with so little can be a huge challenge," McLaughlin admits. But she says the challenges are worth it. "People say that in missionary medicine, your highs are higher and your lows are lower; We really experience that to the extreme here in

Burundi," McLaughlin said. In addition to meeting physical and spiritual needs, Fader's team also trains a new generation to serve here. Dr. Alyssa Pfister is a pediatrician at Kibuye Hope Hospital. "We thought the opportunity was really great to come to Burundi to disciple and train medical students and hopefully residents in the future, in order to be physicians who can care compassionately for their people in Jesus' name and provide excellent healthcare," Pfister said.

Khadi calendar imbroglio: NCP demands new lot of KVIC calendars, Tushar Gandhi lambasts Modi

mumbaI, January 14 (IanS): The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Saturday demanded withdrawal of the controversial Khadi & Village Industries Commission (KVIC) 2017 diaries and calendars in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi's picture "replaced" Mahatma Gandhi. The great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, Tushar Gandhi, also attacked Modi in a series of tweets in the wake of the KVIC diarycalendar controversy. Demanding that a new lot of KVIC calendars and diaries be printed with Mahatma Gandhi's photos, NCP Mumbai President Sachin Ahir said here: "The NCP strongly condemns this blatant act and demands an apology from the PM. These calendars and diaries must be withdrawn immediately and printed afresh with the pictures of the Father of the Nation." The party would launch an agitation against this, starting with a daylong protest near the Gandhi statue at Nariman Point on Sunday with participation of all wings of the NCP. "We shall not permit a single outlet of KVIC to open in Mumbai till they

replace the existing calendars and diaries with newly printed versions carrying pictures of Mahatma Gandhi," Ahir warned. He said the KVIC act has created an uproar all over the country and the government must clarify the reasons how this "insult to Mahatma Gandhi" was perpetrated. "The KVIC must answer whether Mahatma Gandhi is no longer acceptable to them for village development and swadeshi models he propounded," Ahir said. Earlier in the day, Tushar Gandhi, launched an attack on Modi for "replacing" Mahatma Gandhi in the New Year calendar-diary. "PM models for polyvastra (polyester). Bapu (Mahatma Gandhi) wore khaddar (khadi) to Buckingham Palace, not a Rs 10 lakh suit," Gandhi said in a series of sharp tweets. Later he added: "The patronized and organised campaign to abuse Bapu by PeeliChaddis continues. I am certain they will be rewarded." "Was PeeliChaddi ever made from Khadi?", he tweeted, referring to the RSS. "Haath me Charkha, Dil me Nathuram. No sin

Hitler, Mussolini were also powerful brands: Rahul new delhI, January 14 (PtI): Hitting out at Haryana Minister Anil Vij for his controversial remark that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is better brand than Mahatma Gandhi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today said the dictators Hitler and Mussolini were also very powerful brands. The Congress Vice President took to twitter to chastise the senior BJP leader in Haryana for his comments that drew widespread criticism, even his party condemning the statement. "Hitler and Mussolini were also very powerful brands," Rahul said in a tweet. Insulting, case of ‘sedition’: Lalu Replacing Mahatma Gandhi’s picture with that of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Khadi and Village Industries Commission’s (KVIC) calender and diary is an “insult” to the Father of the Nation and a case of “sedition”, RJD president Lalu Prasad said here today. “It is very unfortunate that the picture of Mahatma Gandhi has been replaced with that of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Khadi Udyog’s calender. Modi cannot be even an iota of his (Mahatma’s) personality. I strongly condemn the incident . He was talking to reporters here at his residence where he hosted ‘Dahi-Chura’ feast on Makar Sankranti. Stating that the act of replacing Mahatma’s picture with that of Modi’s on calender has made a case of “sedition”, Prasad said that people must protest as it insulted Mahatma Gandhi. It was Narendra Modi, after taking oath as PM, who went to Gandhi’s memorial and paid his tributes to him but now he and his party were trying to indulge in such “bad acts”, he said. “Hey Ram! Total insult to the Father of Nation by PM… RSS gang killed Gandhi Ji & now hell bent on usurping and killing his ideology & thoughts,” Prasad had tweeted earlier.

Cold wave keeps up intensity across India

new delhI, January 14 (PtI): The wintry chill kept up its intensity with Patna recording the season's lowest at 4.8°C and water bodies freezing in Srinagar, which experienced the coldest night in January in the last five years. Cold conditions persisted in plains of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, while the weatherman said there was no cold wave in Rajasthan. The chill in the morning in

the national capital gave way to a sunny day. The city had a minimum of 3.2 and maximum of 19.3 °C. Bihar's capital of Patna gauged the season's lowest temperature at 4.8°C, mainly due to westerly wind and snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The MeT office said the temperature will gradually edge upward starting tomorrow. The temperature was spiralling downward due to a clear sky, west-

was a "bigger brand" than Mahatma Gandhi but later retracted his statement as it attracted flak. Vij, who is known for his controversial comments on anything, including his own Bharatiya Janata Party and its leadership, told media persons in Ambala that after Mahatma's photographs were replaced with Modi's in the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC)

calendar 2017, Gandhi's picture would also be removed from currency notes. While the Congress lambasted the mindset of the BJP minister, the BJP distanced itself from the comments saying that his "views could be personal". Vij, the state Health and Sports Minister later on Saturday tweeted: "The comments on Mahatma Gandhi are personal. I am withdrawing this so that it does not hurt anyone's sentiments." However, he did not offer any apology for the comments. The minister did not stop here. Mahatma Gandhi's name is such that from the day his picture is pasted on the (currency) note, the note got devalued. It is good that they (KVIC) removed Gandhi's photo and put Modi's. Modi is a much better brand. Khadi sales have increased by 14 per cent after putting Modi's photo," he said. Asked why Mahatma's photographs were still printed on new currency notes issued under the Modi government, Vij said: "Hatt jayengey dheere dheere (They will be removed slowly)."

new delhI, January 14 (IanS): The Election Commission (EC) on Saturday asked all the poll-bound states to defer public hearings by the Chief Minister, Ministers or politically-appointed office bearers of statutory bodies till the conclusion of assembly polls. It has directed the state administration that any such hearing, if necessary, should be held by a senior officer nominated by the state Chief Secretary."It has been brought to the notice of the EC that the Chief Minister, Ministers or politically appointed office bearers of statutory bodies continue to hear appeals filed by persons under various prevailing laws in the states even when the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) comes into force," the EC said in a letter. It said that any such hearings by ministers etc "may have direct or indirect influence" on voters and also "may disturb the level playing field". "Considering the facts and circumstances, the Commission has directed that all such hearings by Chief Minister, Ministers or politically-appointed office bearers of statutory bodies should be deferred till the conclusion of poll in all constituencies," it said. Such hearing is required to be held "in compliance with the mandatory provisions of law/any court order", such hearing should be held by a Secretary level Officer nominated by the Chief Secretary concerned.

erly wind blowing at a speed of 1820 kmph and snowfall in northern states, it said. Gaya was also in the grip of cold at 4.9°C, while Bhagalpur had a low of 7.5 and Purnea 5.1°C. Things in Uttarakhand moved at a snail's pace as many places in the state recorded sub-zero temperatures. For Dehradun, it was one of the coldest days of the season at 2.9°C. Mukteshwar was the coldest

place in the state at minus 1.7, followed by New Tehri minus at 0.3 and Pantnagar at 0.8 °C. In Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar recorded the coldest night for January in the last five years at minus 6.8 °C. Water supply lines and water bodies, including the fringes of the famous Dal Lake, in the city froze due to intense cold. Gulmarg also experienced the season's lowest night temperature at minus 14.4°C. Pahalgam's

minimum settled at minus 12, while Kokernag had a low of minus 8.3 and Kupwara town minus 7.8 °C. Meanwhile, the MeT office in Rajsthan said that barring a few places, there was "no cold wave" as the night temperature increased across the state due to a Western Disturbance. However, Alwar continued to reel under cold weather at 1.4°C and was the coldest place in the state. Mount Abu had a low of 2 °C.

Jallikattu supporters hold agitations, 149 held

maduraI, January 14 (PtI): Determined in their efforts to conduct 'Jallikattu', people today mounted pressure on the Central and state governments by launching agitations against the ban on the bull taming sport, leading to detention of 149 protesters. The die-hard supporters of the sport along with major political parties in the state have been demanding an ordinance for conducting Jallikattu after the Supreme Court imposed a ban on it. While Jallikattu is held in Avaniapuram on Pongal day today, it shifts to Palamedu and Alanganallur in the district during the next two days. While 68 villagers were detained at Alanganallur staging a rail roko, several groups of young men led by film director Gowthaman, were held at Avaniapuram bus-stand near here for demanding lifting of the ban on the sport, police said.

"To ensure maintenance of law and order and compliance of Supreme Court orders, we detained Gowthaman and 148 others," Commissioner of Police, Madurai City, Shailesh Kumar Yadav told PTI. He said while the police allowed the film director to address the gathering for about 15-20 minutes, but his speech became "instigating" later. On claims that symbolic Jallikattu was held in one or two places to show opposition to the ban, Yadav said, "No Jallikattu was held and nothing will be held. We are ensuring that law is followed." He said all across the 27 km of the city and suburbs, adequate police personnel have been deployed to ensure that none got anywhere near the 'Vadivaasal' (entry points for bulls to the open grounds where Jallikattu used to be held). In a village off Alanganallur, a youth climbed a mobile phone tower

seeking nod for Jallikattu. CPI state secretary R Mutharasan and PMK chief Ramadoss claimed that the protesters were lathicharged at Avaniapuram, and demanded action against those responsible. Police, however, said the protesters were only detained. Meanwhile, BJP's state president Tamilisai Soundararajan told reporters in Coimbatore that the party had been hopeful and was expecting that the Supreme Court would give a favourable verdict on Jallikkattu. But the postponement of verdict has come as shock to all, she said. To a specific question on PETA writing to the President to dismiss the Tamil Nadu government if the sport was allowed during Pongal festival, she said the organisation had no right to make such a demand and that the animal rights group should be banned.

Opposition criticises govt over interference in RBI

RBI employees, on Friday ,had urged governor to protect its autonomy:

new delhI, January 14 (IanS): The opposition parties on Saturday accused the government of eroding the autonomy of the RBI following media reports that a Finance Ministry official was sent to the bank to oversee its chest currency operations in view of demonetisation. The Congress, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), Janata Dal United (JDU) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) said that the Modi government's move had weakened the regulatory body. Even the Shiv Sena, which is part of the BJP-led alliance at the centre and in Maharashtra, has slammed the move. The employee unions of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday had expressed deep concern over alleged interference by the central government in the affairs of the apex bank.

Calling the development 'regretful and unfortunate', Congress spokesperson Sanjay Jha said the independence of several independent institutions in the country were compromised by the Modi government. "RBI is a daylight manifestation how autonomy and independence of the most critical financial regulatory body in the country has been

compromised. RBI is signing on dotted lines like a paper tiger. Nowhere in the world a government intervenes in such a brazen fashion," Jha told IANS. He added that the unions at RBI were justified in holding a protest and taking it forward. CPI- M leader Brinda Karat took strong exception to the appointment of

the official and supported the unions. "The RBI's mandate of autonomy given by Parliament has been not only eroded but destroyed by the Modi government. And now it is adding insult to injury by sending an official directly to oversee (its operations). The unions are absolutely correct in strongly protesting against it," Karat told IANS.

JDU leader K.C. Tyagi opposed the move saying that several such attempts were made in the past to weaken the RBI. NCP leader Tariq Anwer called the attempt to depute a government official at RBI inappropriate. "It has been a tradition that RBI should be allowed to work independently. Any kind of direct monitoring by the government is not appropriate." Union leader and Shiv Sena MP from Mumbai, Gajanan Kirtikar said "As per the RBI Act, the central bank is autonomous and the government can not interfere in its operations. Monitoring chest currency operations of RBI is not the finance ministry's job." "Now, we are going to hold discussions with those concerned. We will take to agitations if the decision is not rolled back," Kirtikar said.

ee unions of the Reserve Bank of India expressed their resentment against alleged interference of the government in the central bank's affairs, the Finance Ministry on Saturday said that it fully respects its autonomy. "It is categorically stated that the government fully respects the independence and autonomy of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)," Finance Ministry said in a statement here. "Consultations between the government and the RBI are undertaken on various matters of public importance wherever such consultation is mandated by law or has evolved as a practice. Consultations mandated by law or as evolved by practice should not be taken as infringement of autonomy of RBI," the statement said. Assad linked to chemical attacks for first time Anthony Deutsch

I

Reuters

nternational investigators have said for the first time that they suspect President Bashar al-Assad and his brother are responsible for the use of chemical weapons in the Syrian conflict, according to a document seen by Reuters. A joint inquiry for the United Nations and global watchdog the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) had previously identified only military units and did not name any commanders or officials. Now a list has been produced of individuals whom the investigators have linked to a series of chlorine bomb attacks in 2014-15 - including Assad, his younger brother Maher and other high-ranking figures - indicating the decision to use toxic weapons came from the very top, according to a source familiar with the inquiry. The Assads could not be reached for comment but a Syrian government official said accusations that government forces had used chemical weapons had "no basis in truth". The government has repeatedly denied using such weapons during the civil war, which is almost six years old, saying all the attacks highlighted by the inquiry were the work of rebels or the Islam-

ic State militant group. The list, which has been seen by Reuters but has not been made public, was based on a combination of evidence compiled by the U.N.-OPCW team in Syria and information from Western and regional intelligence agencies, according to the source, who declined to be identified due to the sensitivity of the issue. Reuters was unable to independently review the evidence or to verify it. The U.N.-OPCW inquiry - known as the Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM) - is led by a panel of three independent experts, supported by a team of technical and administrative staff. It is mandated by the U.N. Security Council to identify individuals and organisations responsible for chemical attacks in Syria. Virginia Gamba, the head of the Joint Investigative Mechanism, denied any list of individual suspects had yet been compiled by the inquiry. "There are no ... identification of individuals being considered at this time," she told Reuters by email. The use of chemical weapons is banned under international law and could constitute a war crime. While the inquiry has no judicial powers, any naming of suspects could lead to their prosecution. Palestinian President Abbas states US Embassy move would hurt peace VATICAN CITy, JANuAry 14 (reuTerS): Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Saturday that if U.S. president-elect Donald Trump goes through with plans to transfer Washington’s embassy in Israel to Jerusalem it will hurt the peace process. “We are waiting to see if it happens. If it does it will not help peace and we hope it does not happen,” Abbas told reporters outside the Vatican gates minutes after discussing the Middle East situation with Pope Francis. Abbas, who spoke through an interpreter, stopped in Rome to open the new embassy of the State of Palestine to the Vatican. He stopped in Rome on his way to Paris for a Middle East peace conference. Trump’s promise to relocate the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem would upend decades of U.S. policy. Israel and the Palestinians, who are seeking a state of their own, both claim Jerusalem as their capital. Successive U.S. administrations have said the city’s status must be negotiated. Jerusalem, which Israeli has declared its “united and eternal capital,” is home to sites sacred to Jews, Muslims and Christians. The Vatican also backs a two-state solution.

For your heart, depression may be as risky as obesity and cholesterol LONdON, JANuAry 14 (IANS): The risk of death by cardiovascular diseases due to depression may be just as great as that posed by high cholesterol levels and obesity, a study has found. Worldwide 350 million people are affected by depression, according to the World Health Organisation. “Our study shows that the risk of a fatal cardiovascular disease due to depression is almost as great as that due to elevated cholesterol levels or obesity,” said Karl-Heinz Ladwig, professor at Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Germany. Depression accounted for nearly 15 per cent of the cardiovascular deaths. “That is comparable to the other risk factors, such as hypercholesterolemia, obesity and smoking,” Ladwig said, noting that these factors cause 8.4 to 21.4 per cent of the cardiovascular deaths. In the study, the team included 3,428 male patients between the ages of 45 and 74 years and observed their development over a period of 10 years. The researchers analysed the relationship between depression and other risk factors like tobacco smoke, high cholesterol levels, obesity or hypertension and how big a role does each factor play? The results show that only high blood pressure and smoking are associated with a greater risk. The study was recently published in the journal Atherosclerosis.

nal Court (ICC), but alleged war crimes could be referred to the court by the Security Council - although splits among global powers over the war make this a distant prospect at present. "The ICC is concerned about any country where crimes are reported to be committed," a spokesman for the court said when asked for comment. "Unless Syria accepts the ICC jurisdiction, the only way that (the) ICC would have jurisdiction over the situation would be through a referral by the Security Council." The list seen by Reuters

could form the basis for the inquiry team's investigations this year, according to the source. It is unclear whether the United Nations or OPCW will publish the list separately. 'HIGHEST LEVELS' The list identifies 15 people "to be scrutinized in relation to use of CW (chemical weapons) by Syrian Arab Republic Armed Forces in 2014 and 2015". It does not specify what role they are suspected of playing, but lists their titles. It is split into three sections. The first, titled "Inner Circle President" lists six

people including Assad, his brother who commands the elite 4th Armoured Division, the defence minister and the head of military intelligence. The second section names the air force chief as well as four commanders of air force divisions. They include the heads of the 22nd Air Force Division and the 63rd Helicopter Brigade, units that the inquiry has previously said dropped chlorine bombs. The third part of the list - "Other relevant Senior Mil Personnel" - names two colonels and two majorgenerals. Hamish de Bretton-

Gordon, an independent specialist in biological and chemical weapons who monitors Syria, told Reuters the list reflected the military chain of command. "The decisions would be made at the highest levels initially and then delegated down. Hence the first use would need to be authorised by Assad," said de Bretton-Gordon, a former commander of British and NATO chemical and biological defence divisions who frequently visits Syria for professional consultancy work. Beijing sets 2017 air pollution goal

BeIJING, JANuAry 14 (reuTerS): Beijing's air quality target for 2017 is more than double the acceptable standard set by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the mayor announced on Saturday in the wake of weeks of hazardous air pollution in the Chinese capital. "We will work hard to keep PM2.5 at an annual average of around 60 micrograms per cubic metre," Beijing mayor Cai Qi said during his delivery of the city's annual work report at the opening of the Beijing People's Congress on Saturday. PM2.5 refers to damaging air particles so small they can pass through humans' lungs to affect other organs. The acceptable PM2.5 annual average set by the WHO is 20-25 micrograms per cubic metre. Beijing's air quality likely improved 9.9 percent in 2016, the municipal government said in a document, and PM2.5 likely sat at an annual average of 73, better than the 2016 target of around 76.6. But smog has engulfed Beijing and large swathes of the north and centre of the country for days at a time in recent weeks, disrupting flights, port operations and schools. Environmental authorities on Saturday said bad air would strike provinces around Beijing in the coming days, the state news agency Xinhua reported. Last week, Beijing said it would People wearing masks walk past Yintai Centre during the smog after a red establish a police force to deal specifically with enalert was issued for heavy air pollution in Beijing's central business district, vironmental offences as part of efforts to clean up its air and crack down on persistent polluters. CHLORINE BARREL BOMBS Syria joined the international Chemical Weapons Convention under a U.S.-Russian deal that followed the deaths of hundreds of civilians in a sarin gas attack in Ghouta on the outskirts of Damascus in August 2013. It was the deadliest use of chemicals in global warfare since the 1988 Halabja massacre at the end of the Iran-Iraq war, which killed at least 5,000 people in Iraqi Kurdistan. The Syrian government, which denied its forces were behind the Ghouta attack, also agreed to hand over its declared stockpile of 1,300 tonnes of toxic weaponry and dismantle its chemical weapons programme under international supervision. The United Nations and OPCW have been investigating whether Damascus is adhering to its commitments under the agreement, which averted the threat of U.S.-led military intervention. The bodies appointed the panel of experts to conduct the inquiry, and its mandate runs until November. The panel published a report in October last year which said Syrian government forces used chemical weapons at least three times in 2014-2015 and that Islamic State used mustard gas in 2015.

The October report identified Syria's 22nd Air Force Division and 63rd Helicopter Brigade as having dropped chlorine bombs and said people "with effective control in the military units ... must be held accountable". The source familiar with the inquiry said the October report had clearly established the institutions responsible and that the next step was to go after the individuals. Washington on Thursday blacklisted 18 senior Syrian officials based on the U.N.-OPCW inquiry's October report - some of whom also appear on the list seen by Reuters - but not Assad or his brother. The issue of chemical weapons use in Syria has become a deeply political one, and the U.N.-OPCW inquiry's allegations of chlorine bomb attacks by government forces have split the U.N. Security Council's veto-wielding members. The United States, Britain and France have called for sanctions against Syria, while Assad's ally Russia has said the evidence presented is insufficient to justify such measures. A Security Council resolution would be required to bring Assad and other senior Syrian officials before the International Criminal Court for any possible war crimes prosecution - something Russia would likely block.

WhatsApp denies encrypted messages can be intercepted

NeW yOrk, JANuAry 14 (IANS): WhatsApp has denied reports that encrypted messages on its platform can be read or intercepted, saying that since April 2016, WhatsApp messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted by default. A security vulnerability that can be used to allow Facebook and others to intercept and read encrypted messages has been found within its WhatsApp messaging service, The Guardian reported on Friday. "The Guardian's story on an alleged 'backdoor' in WhatsApp is false. WhatsApp does not give governments a 'backdoor' into its systems. WhatsApp would fight any government request to create a backdoor," said Brian Acton, Co-founder WhatsApp, in a Reddit post. WhatsApp has published a technical white paper explaining its implementation

of end-to-end encryption. The security issue was detected by Tobias Boelter, a cryptography and security researcher. "If WhatsApp is asked by a government agency to disclose its messaging records, it can effectively grant access due to the change in keys," The Guardian quoted Boelter as saying. WhatsApp said it was designed to be simple and they had built end-to-end encryption, with encryption as the default so that not a single one of their one billion users has to turn on encryption. "The fact that WhatsApp handles key changes is not a 'backdoor', it is how cryptography works. Any attempt to intercept messages in transmit by the server is detectable by the sender, just like with signal, PGP, or any other end-to-end encrypted communication system," said Moxie Marlinspike, who designed WhatsApp's encryption, in a blog.

Top Trump aide in frequent contact with Russia's ambassador WASHINGTON, JANuAry 14 (AP): President-elect Donald Trump's national security adviser and Russia's ambassador to the U.S. have been in frequent contact in recent weeks, including on the day the Obama administration hit Moscow with sanctions in retaliation for election-related hacking, a senior U.S. official said Friday. After initially denying that Michael Flynn and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak spoke Dec. 29, a Trump official said late Friday that the transition team was aware of one call on the day President Barack Obama imposed sanctions. It's not unusual for incoming administrations to have discussions with foreign governments before taking office. But repeated contacts just as Obama imposed sanctions would raise questions about whether Trump's team discussed — or even helped shape — Russia's response. Russian President Vladimir Putin unexpectedly did not retaliate against the U.S. for the move, a decision Trump quickly praised. More broadly, Flynn's contact with the Russian ambassador suggests the incoming administration has already begun to lay the groundwork for its promised closer relationship with Moscow. That effort appears to be moving ahead, even as many in Washington, including Republicans, have expressed outrage over intelligence officials' assessment that Putin launched a hacking operation aimed at meddling in the U.S. election to benefit Trump.

In an interview published Friday evening by The Wall Street Journal, Trump said he might do away with Obama's sanctions if Russia works with the U.S. on battling terrorists and achieving other goals. "If Russia is really helping us, why would anybody have sanctions?" he asked. During a news conference Wednesday, Trump highlighted his warmer rapport with the Russian leader. "If Putin likes Donald Trump, I consider that an asset, not a liability, because we have a horrible relationship with Russia," he said.

The sanctions targeted the GRU and FSB, leading Russian intelligence agencies that the U.S. said were involved in the hacking of the Democratic National Committee and other groups. The U.S. also kicked out 35 Russian diplomats who it said were actually intelligence operatives. Trump has been willing to insert himself into major foreign policy issues during the transition, at times contradicting the current administration and diplomatic protocol. He accepted a call from Taiwan's

president, ignoring the longstanding "One China" policy that does not recognize the island's sovereignty. Asked about that Friday by the Journal, he responded, "Everything is under negotiation." He also publicly urged the U.S. to veto a United Nations Security Council resolution condemning Israeli settlements, then slammed the Obama administration for abstaining and allowing the measure to pass. Questions about Trump's friendly posture toward Russia have deepened since the election, as he has dismissed U.S. intelligence agencies' assertions about Russia's role in the hacking of Democratic groups. In briefing Trump on their findings, intelligence officials also presented the president-elect with unsubstantiated claims that Russia had amassed compromising personal and financial allegations about him, according to a separate U.S. official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the official was not allowed to publicly discuss the matter. The Senate Intelligence Committee announced late Friday that it would investigate possible contacts between Russia and people associated with U.S. political campaigns as part of a broader investigation into Moscow's meddling in the 2016 presidential election. Trump acknowledged for the first time this week that he accepts that Russia was behind the hacking. But he questioned whether officials were leaking information about their meetings with him, warning that

would be a "tremendous blot" on their record. Flynn's own ties with Russia have worried some Republicans who are more skeptical of the Kremlin than Trump appears to be. After leaving his position as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2014, Flynn made appearances on RT, a state-run Russian television network. In 2015, he was paid to attend an RT gala in Moscow, where he sat next to Putin. As national security adviser, Flynn will work in the West Wing close to the Oval Office and will have frequent access to Trump. Unlike Trump's nominees to lead the Pentagon, State Department and other national security agencies, Flynn's post does not require Senate confirmation. The Trump team's account of Flynn's contacts with the Russian envoy changed throughout the day Friday. Trump spokesman Sean Spicer initially said there was one phone call between Flynn and Kislyak on Dec. 28, as well as a Christmas greeting via text messages over the holidays. He said sanctions were not part of the discussions. Later Friday, a transition official said Flynn and Kislyak had spoken by phone on Dec. 29, following a text message from the ambassador the day before. The official also confirmed a phone call between the men earlier in December. The U.S. official who spoke to the AP Friday described the contacts between Flynn and Kislyak as "very frequent."

Parthiv leads Gujarat to maiden Ranji title MuMBai, JaNuary 14 (reuTers): Captain Parthiv Patel hit an attacking 143 on the final day to lead Gujarat to a maiden Ranji Trophy title with a five-wicket victory over heavyweights Mumbai in Indore on Saturday. The diminutive wicketkeeperbatsman also top-scored for his side with 90 in the first innings, giving Gujarat a crucial 100-run lead after Mumbai were restricted to 228 in the title match for India's domestic first-class championship. Mumbai, who were aiming to claim a 42nd title, improved in the second innings and set their opponents a winning target of 312, leaving Gujarat needing to complete the highest final run chase in tournament history to claim the title. Resuming on 47 without loss, Gujarat, who had only featured in one previous Ranji Trophy final back in 1951 in the same city, were reduced to 89-3 before Patel and

Manprit Juneja (54) revived the chase with a fourth-wicket stand of 116. The 31-year-old, who hit some streaky boundaries at the start of his knock, added 94 with Rujul Bhatt for the next wicket to take Gujarat within striking distance of victory before he was out, caught and bowled by paceman Shardul Thakur. For their part, Mumbai were left to rue a number of dropped catches during the match as well as their poor display with the bat in the first innings. "It was a dream we collectively saw before the season started," Patel said during the presentation. "So happy we have been able to achieve a Ranji Trophy victory. "I was taking my chances because, while chasing 312, I thought somebody has to play attacking shots. I am glad whatever chances I took they all came off."

Government asks AITA to hold election as per Sports Code New Delhi, JaNuary 14 (PTi): To ensure that the National Sports Federations (NSFs) elect office bearers as per the Sports Code only, the government has hardened its stance and latest to fall in line is All India Tennis Association, which has agreed to elect its new President next month. Sports Minister Vijay Goel today met with AITA Life President Anil Khanna and told him in clear terms that if AITA has to get back the recognition, they will have to elect a new President as per the Sports Code. The government had de-recognised AITA recently after Khanna was elected President for a second term till 2020 at sports body's AGM in Indore on September 3 even as the veteran administrator refused to take up the post. AITA's Executive Committee then elected senior bureaucrat Praveen Mahajan as the new President on December 1 but the government wants the Federation to hold fresh elections. AITA will have its Annual General Body (AGM) meeting

during the India-Spain tie in Pune from February 3-5 and elect a new President. "We want all Federations to follow the government guidelines. We have nothing against them. We just want to ensure that proper procedures are followed as per the Sports Code. We will not tolerate any violation. Mr Khanna has agreed to hold elections," Sports Minister Vijay Goel said. Before AITA, the government had forced Karate and Boxing Federations to conduct elections and elect office-bearers as per the Sports Code, which does not allow three consecutive terms to any official. After two terms of four years, the officials have to serve a cooling off period of four years to be in fray for another term. Khanna served as AITA Secretary General from 2004 to 2012 in two consecutive terms before becoming President for a four year term till 2016. It is expected that Praveen Mahajan, only the second woman to be AITA President, will be formally re-elected President in Pune.

THE DEBATE ON RESERVATION FOR WOMEN

"What needs to be understood is that, the reservation for women has not been brought about by an Act of Parliament or an Act of the State, but through a constitutional provision viz, Article 243T" Kakheto Sema Sr. Addl.Advocate General, Nagaland

T

he reservation for women in Urban Local Bodies has become an issue that has rocked the State of Nagaland. Social Organizations and individuals have voiced their protest against the reservation for women, averring that the same is against the customary practices and laws of the Nagas. The common ground for the protest is that the reservation for women in Urban Local Bodies is in violation of Article 371A of the Constitution of India which protects the customary practices and laws of the Nagas. As a member of the legal fraternity and as a Naga, I have concerns about the views expressed. Each of us, as citizens of the State, in relation to issues of Public importance, must be careful about voicing informed opinions. We are all too familiar with the penchant of the Nagas for indulging in articulating less than informed public opinions and the consequences arising there from. With due respect to all social organizations and individuals, I write this article to share my opinion on the debate. The Constitution of India is one of the longest Constitutions of the world. It contains 395 Articles and 12 Schedules. Parliament has the power to amend the provisions of the Constitution from time to time. By the 74th Amendment, which came into effect on 01-06-1993, Parliament incorporated Part IXA in the Constitution of India. This Part of the Constitution is in relation to the Municipalities, and comprises of Articles 243P to Article 234ZT. Article 243T, in this Part, provides for the reservation of one third of the total number of seats to be filled by direct election in every Municipality, for women. The said Article then delegates to the State Legislatures the power to enact Laws to give effect to

the reservation. Article 234T of the Constitution is therefore the foundation for the reservation for women in Urban Local Bodies. What needs to be understood is that, the reservation for women has not been brought about by an Act of Parliament or an Act of the State, but through a constitutional provision viz, Article 243T. At the cost of repetition, for emphasis, the reservation for women is provided by a Constitutional provision and not through an Act passed by Parliament or the State Legislature. Those opposed to the reservation for women cite their reliance on the protection afforded by Article 371A of the Constitution of India. One cardinal principle in the interpretation of Status is that, the provisions of Law must be read in the entirety and not on piecemeal basis. Article 371A begins with a non-obstante clause, which most opponents of reservation for women vehemently quote time and again. For a proper understanding of the said Article, the relevant portion is quoted hereunder. “[371A. Special Provision with respect to the State of Nagaland:(1) Notwithstanding anything in this constitution:a) No Act of Parliament in respect ofi) Religious or social practices of Nagas, ii) Naga customary law and procedure. iii) Administrative of civil and criminal justice involving decisions according to Naga Customary Law, iv) Ownership and transfer of land and its resources, shall apply to the State of Nagaland unless the Legislative Assembly of Nagaland by a resolution so decides ” Referring to the introductory sentence “Notwithstanding anything in this Constitution”,

most of us have the opinion that this sentence has application to all laws framed by Parliament. However, a reading of the entire Article would show that this sentence is qualified and relates to firstly, Acts of Parliament and secondly the said Acts of Parliament in relation to the subjects mentioned in Clauses (i) to (iv). The emphasis in this Article is therefore, “Acts of Parliament”. Acts of Parliament are passed under the enabling Articles of the Constitution. The argument with regard to reservation for women and customary practices and laws vis-àvis Article 371A must therefore be understood in the constitutional context. Article 371A is in relation to the Acts framed by Parliament and its ambit does not cover the Articles of the Constitution itself. By the very incorporation of Part IXA and Article 243T thereof, in the Constitution of India through the 74th Amendment, the issue of Women’s reservation in Urban Local Bodies is no longer debatable in relation to Article 371 A. Whether or not women’s reservation in Urban Local Bodies violates Naga customary practices and laws is itself a debatable issue. However, with the incorporation of 243T in the Constitution of India, the said debate has been effectively removed from the purview of Article 371A. This would mean that those who protest against women’s reservation as violative of Article 371A of the Constitution of India, are actually protesting a non -issue. In the year 2012, the State Assembly adopted a resolution to exempt itself from the purview of Part IXA of the Constitution of India. An objective assessment of the said resolution would disclose that the State Legislature lacked the competence to exempt itself from the purview of the said Part of the Constitution of India. Parliament alone is competent to exempt the State from the said Part or

y discourse in social media on Women Reservation might have attracted the attention of our womenfolk and who knows many might have settled uncomfortably. Maybe my poor sense of expression failed to draw a specific conclusion. But till date I, for one neither supports nor opposes 33%Women Reservation instead what I am trying to argue are: (1) Lets venture to understand our social and customary status and respect our biological identity (2) Why govt drafted/adopted the Nagaland municipal bill/act, why rejected it and lately again approved it without board based consultations but hook in to one-sided controversial advises and the political will of the present govt (3) Why not weigh the merits and demerits of the Act under the present format and its contradictions with art. 371(A) if any and set-up the most welcomed ULBs after due amendments (4) What merits legislation of Women Reservation in Nagaland and (5) If WR is necessary due to gender discrimination which is affected due to certain Naga customary practices than isn't it proper to first rectify our customary wis-

dom and only then follow legislation exercises if necessary. Naga customary and traditional practices evolved when our great great grandparents were pagans, animist, illiterate etc so we can't deny some flaws including gender discrimination inappropriate to the contemporary context but this generation survives on the blessings of the gospel which is through Christ and as such gender discrimination is a foreign wisdom unknown to our Bible. For better understanding, if we refer to the genesis of the universe, in Eden God blessed and authorised the first Adam and Eve to jointly live, rule and fill the whole earth. Hence, in absence of any one of the genders, the definition of humanity is lost and God's purpose for His beautiful creations remains elusive, even more so Naga women enjoy equal respect and prominence in Naga community ever since the advent of Christianity in our land. Nevertheless, if our adorable women folk can frankly say "we are weaker human being" or can justify that they have been rampantly deprived of their humanitarian privileges, we the brave men folks should regretfully retrospect our shortfalls and thankfully extend the required reservation quota so that together we can make this planet more beautiful and live happily for the glory of the almighty God of the vibrant Naga people. As a goodwill gesture to our beloved women, hey intellectual

men folk why only 33% WR in ULBs rather we must cordially invite our women to jointly occupy berths in the parliament as well as in the legislative assembly by giving them special reservation quota and courteously slice out a 1/3 of the seats to them. Under this pretext our women would deserve the highest honour for total reservations in all political and societal spectrums. The 1/3 of the sitting hon'ble elected male members should be happy enough to accept it as a privilege to honour our magnanimous womenfolk and graciously pave way for a sound democratic alliance. But, Naga as a community is proud to proclaim that we have world class female counterpart of our blood who are ashamed to say "we survive on women concessions" but with dignity they uphold "the able should lead to whom even Mount Everest isn't a challenge but sky is the limit" and we praise God for that. If my daughter is inferior than others, I as a dad would never agree to any grace mark but I'd encourage her to do better by putting more energy because she is the jewel of my soul. Regretfully, I guess trying to settle this issue on gender privilege quota and certain likely hiccups in the Nagaland municipal Act through political wisdom will only shower unabated avalanche of enmity destroying the fabric of Peace and Unity in Nagaland. samsumi99@gmail.com

Women should be given the freedom to serve

G

Imlibenla Wati

uinness elsewhere remarked that the early protestant reformers viewed all the vocation as service to God and the Catholics viewed those who served as priest as special call o serve God. He then proceeds to say, however it is reversed now. How true. We often encounter the view that serving God as missionaries or pastor is extra special among the protestants. However that is not the case as Abraham Kupyer very beautifully said , “there is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry: ‘Mine!'” What is remarkable is Kupyer was the prime minister of the Netherlands at the turn of the 20th century. For those of us claiming to be Christian, how then should our Christian worldview inform us when it comes to how we look at politics? Should we simple look at politics as too worldly and dirty with the view “Do evange-

lism, not politics”? If God is indeed the Lord of all, every square inch of human enterprise comes under the Lordship of Christ. I may as well add politics too. The total Gospel consist not just “saving souls” but transformation of society. Politics is one of the means in the effort of transformation of society. If so, why not the talented and the learned involvement in politics and influence our government. Why politics should be left to ‘political families’ or those who can flex muscles? Why not march towards a better society through wise policies and capable leadership? In other words, why not the good people, the learned and the capable involve in politics? Closer to home, we are right now engaging on the issue of 33% reservation for women. I believe that women were made in the “Image of God” just as men are. This implies that women should be treated with dignity and whatever rights are available for men should also be available for women. I there-

fore humbly submit that women should also be given a chance to sit in the table of decision making. This however should be base on the individual’s merit. Some of the prominent successful women politicians credit not the reservation but merit. Margaret Thatcher political career was shaped not through reservation but her amazing combination of her wit, will power and courage. Historian Paul Johnson remarked that Prime ministers like Bandaranaike and Golda Meir “advanced themselves by brains, persistence, guts.” I therefore firmly believe women should be given the freedom to serve and transform the society through political platform, based on her merit. If Christians are interested in total gospel, we ought to include transformation of society as well. Politics is a means of achieving that goal. If that is our goal, women should also be allowed to participate in that enterprise.

is that, by the passing of this Act, the State itself provided for reservation for women in Urban Local Bodies. The bottom line is that, whether it is the current Government or any other succeeding Government, the implementation of Article 243T is a Constitutional mandate. There is a huge distinction between a Constitutional mandate and a Statutory mandate. In the larger context, it must be appreciated by all of us that the State Government has a duty to carry out its Constitutional as well as Statutory mandates and any failure in this regard would be tantamount to a breakdown of the Constitutional machinery. In Conclusion, I urge all the social organizations and individuals who are opposing women’s reservation in Urban Local Bodies to objectively examine the matter afresh. As citizens of the country and the State, we are bound by the Constitution and the laws framed there under. Our objections and protests in relation to issues of governance must be based on the principles of the Rule of Law. Every society must progress and our society has progressed from the villages to towns and cities. In the process, we have adopted the democratic form of Government with elected representatives. We have undertaken a voyage of development and growth. The customary practices and laws of the Nagas is still protected and we have institutions in this regard in the villages. Many of the institutions that we have adopted, strictly speaking, are alien to the customary practices and laws of yesteryears. In addition to the proposition that reservation for women is not a subject covered by Article 371A of the Constitution of India, it is perhaps time for an attitudinal change in our mindsets. Reservation for women has come to stay whether we like it or not and we should bury our difference and look to the future.

any other Part of the Constitution of India. This anomalous situation was corrected by the State Legislature in the year 2016. Drawing a simple analogy, can a father become the son and vice versa? In the scheme of the Constitution of India, no State Legislature has the competence to exempt itself from any Part of the Constitution of India. Since the women’s reservation which came into effect in 1993 was not implemented by the State, the women, through their organization approached the Hon’ble High Court. The Single Bench of the Hon’ble High Court directed the State Government to implement the provisions of Part IXA and Article 243T with regard to women’s reservation. This direction was issued holding that Article 371 A has no application in relation to Article 243T. In appeal by the State, the Division Bench of the Hon’ble High Court set aside the judgment of the Single Bench and allowed some time to the State to examine the matter. The matter went up to the Hon’ble Supreme Court and this case is still subjudice. The Central Government as well as the State Governments derive their authority from the Constitution of India. The constitution of India is the fountainhead of all laws enforced within the Indian Union. Article 243T is a part of this fountainhead and it is the duty of the State of the Nagaland to give effect to its provisions. Therefore, beginning from the year 1993, it was the duty of the State Government to give effect to the provisions of Article 243T. The exercise in this regard was taken by State Government with the introduction of the Nagaland Municipal Council Act 2001. This Act passed by the State Legislature carries out the delegated duty of the State to implement the provisions of Article 243T of the Constitution of India. ll the legal Points and Constitutional Issues in connection with the 33% Seat Reservation in the Urban Local Bodies for the Female Gender that the Joint Woman Organization Nagaland has brought out in the local Papers on 13 January 2017 must be true. The Organization’s Statement is Right in the legal context. The no-critical Nagaland Assembly and the naive, personally all very good Legislators have characteristically proven myopic in Principles in Nagaland contexts and brought this acrimonious controversy to Nagaland today. In the universal democratic political context of Principles, the Woman Organization’s demand for special 33% Seat Reservation for the woman alone in the Urban Local Bodies while they share the remaining 67 % Seats freely with the Males, is UNREASONABLY INEQUAL. The Males are barred from the 33% woman’s Seat but the Women are free to share any of the remaining 67 Seats! All the Seats, 100% of them appertain to all bona fides in the Society irrespective of Gender but 33% are apportioned specifically separate for the Woman only. What an Inequity? Article 243 of the Constitution of India may look at the Reservation as REASONABLE in its alleged view that “the Society limits the Women”. Which Society does the Constitution of India have in Mind? The Naga Society does not look down on Woman. In Naga Polity, Man and Woman have different Positions in Public Matters. This natural separate Position of Man and Women in Public Polity cannot artificially homogenize with Special Undemocratic Political Favor for Women in the Urban Areas. The conditions of atmosphere in the Urban Area are the same for both Man and Woman. There is no special need of political favor for woman alone in the Urban Area. If the female Gender in Urban Area needs special political favor, those Women in the Rural Areas have the same requirement too. The 33% Reserved Seats for Woman in Urban Bodies is Unequal Political Favor, perhaps granted not for nothing from the sage Government! The favor is not available in the Lok Sabha, it is not in the State Legislative Assembly; in Raja Sabha this favoritism does not exist. The 33% Reservation for the Urban elite Woman is totally unadvised, uncalled for and unnecessary in Nagaland condition today. There should be democratic Equality in Politic for all. It is argued that the Single Bench Supreme

Court passed judgment that the 33% Reservation for Women in the ULB does not impinge on the Article 371A of Nagaland. If the Supreme Court has passed such a Judgment, then it must be so. But Let Article 371A alone: The unwritten Article of Common Consensus Conscience etched in the Heart of the Nagas in the Naga Village Council from time immemorial is more conscionable for the Naga Society. If Constitution says ‘Society limits the Women’ in India, it must be so. This Writer did not find Article 243 in his Copy of the Indian Constitution Book. He enquired from another reliable Person’s Copy, but there also, it is not listed. It is not known whether the Article is repealed or not but a District Magistrate said it still is Current. However, whether the Article is repealed or not; has no worry for the Writer because in the Naga Polity, the position of Male and Female Gender is different. The Male Gender’s Stand in the Naga Polity today is nearer the modern political principle of ‘EQUALITY FOR ALL in the Assembly, in Parliament or in the Local elective Bodies. There should be no Special treatment for one Gender only, and like it or not, the Majority Decision is honored in Democracy. This unwritten Magna Charta is etched in the Heart of the Naga Village Council. It is a kind of wild but is Pure Democracy. It may be unimaginable to other Societies. It was unimaginable to the civilized Authors of the Magana Carta long ago but the amazingly found it functioning “here and today in these People”. It is troublingly functioning in Naga Society today. Some elite women may not like this, but Women are shorter sighted than Males in the long term historical Perspective for a People. Nagas are still in the threshold of their History and the Females may give weightier consider for the decisions of the majority rather than their shortterm immediate election prospects. It is for the long-term historical perspective of their People that Nagaland strongly stands on the Indigenous Issue also where some woman may consider Woman Rights as more immediate. There are many good Rules and Regulations in the Indian Constitution Nagas need to follow, but India also needs to give spaces for relevant, conscionable unwritten Naga Practices the Parliament of India has already agreed. Nagaland Assembly Legislators may like to read the ‘writings on the Wall’ and withdraw the 33% Reservation Regulation before the end of this Age after thorough and deep consultation with the people of Nagaland, and the woman Organization may also kindly withdraw their Case for the love of the Naga Society.

ctor Johnny Depp has sued his former business managers, saying that he faced "gross misconduct" that resulted in him losing "tens of millions of dollars". The managers, however, have denied the allegations and responded that the suit is a fabrication and a result of Depp's "profligate" spending, reports variety.com. Depp made the allegations in a lawsuit filed on Friday in a state court here. Depp filed the complaint, which is 52 pages long, against The Mandel Co, The Management Group, Joel L. Mandel, Robert Mandel, First American Title Insurance Co. and 15 other unnamed defendants. The "Pirates of the Caribbean" actor is seeking a jury trial and asking for compensatory damages of

at least $25 million. Depp said that the self-dealing by TMG was so extensive that he has been forced to sell off assets to pay for the losses. "Mr. Depp is one of the most sought after and highly paid actors in the world. He is also the victim of the gross misconduct of his business managers - The Management Group and attorneys Joel and Robert Mandel - who collected tens of millions of dollars of contingent fees, purportedly based on an oral contract, all at Mr. Depp's expense," said attorney Matthew Kanny in the complaint. The suit contains 11 causes of action, including professional negligence, fraud, negligent misrepresentation and unjust enrichment, variety.com said.

Gwen Stefani sued for $25 million

G

wen Stefani's former hairstylist Richard Morrill is reportedly suing the singer for $25 million, claiming she stole his lyrics for the 2014 hit song "Spark the fire". In fact, he is also suing the producer for not "supervising Stefani" in the writing process. In the documents, obtained by eonline.com, Morrill claims he gave Stefani a copy of his song "Who's got my lightah" in 1998 after she heard it on the sound system while he was styling her hair. He helped write and record the song for his band L.A.P.D. at the time and says she copied the chorus for the 2014 song, changing "Who's got my lightah", into "Who got the lighter? Let's spark the fire".

He also says the rhythm, melody, and background music during the chorus, which is repeated four times throughout the song "Spark the fire", is almost identical to the chorus of "Who's got my lighter", and they are sung in the same key.

She had collaborated with rapper-record producer Pharrell Williams for the song. Morrill explained that he knows Stefani wrote the chorus because, in a 2014 interview with Elle magazine, she said Williams

wrote the majority of the song except for the chorus, which she was responsible for. He also claims they have made at least $25 million directly and indirectly. Thus, he is asking them to pay him all damages due to "their unlawful acts" with pre-judgment interest as well as account for and pay all gains and profits that they have "enjoyed at his expense". He is also asking them to pay for the cost of "corrective advertising necessary due to harm to the exclusivity of the copyright and other misleading aspects of Defendants' actions". He is even asking them to account for his costs and attorneys' fees as allowed by law. Source: IANS

One Direction fans made Briana Jungwirth’s life ‘nightmare’

B

riana Jungwirth has found it tough having a baby with One Direction's Louis Tomlinson because she's been slammed with abuse from fans. The 23-year-old stylist is devoted to 11-month-old Freddie but her friends admit the scrutiny she has come under and the abuse she's received from her former lover's supporters - including rumours the baby wasn't real - left her feeling “less of a person”. Her pal, Luke Poole, said: “Of course Briana loves Freddie but it's definitely been a nightmare at times. “It's tough - she's taken a lot of thing personally...”She's not just a normal mum - she's the mum of a superstar...”When people said the baby was fake, that made Briana feel like less of a person. She's trying to focus on being a mum, she's got a lot of

pressure on her. “On top her having had a kid and that being a huge lifechanging moment, she also has to worry about people talking about her.” And Luke admits that things are difficult for Briana because Louis is “all over the place” and can't always give her the support she needs. He added to heat magazine: “It's just Louis can't be there so it's tough for Briana. “I think they're still trying to be kids and young adult - they want to have fun and hang out with their friends... he's all over the place. For her, she has to sacrifice a lot to take care of the kid. I would say that having a kid at a young age is tough.” Briana - who recently deleted her Instagram account after it was hacked - has previously asked for privacy and hit out at her online detractors. Last year she posted a message on her accounts, which read: “To all

those who feel the need to make disparaging, hateful and inappropriate comments concerning me and my son Freddie - I am sincerely sorry that you all have chosen to focus your time and attention on my life and the life of my son. Surely you must have better things to do than pry into the personal life of a single mom and newborn child. I am a proud new mother that is extremely joyous about my child being in this world and have shared that joy with my friends and family on a daily basis - often times through social media. The 28-year-old, who was in Delhi recently, did just one film annually for three consecutive years — Jab Tak Hai Jaan in 2012, Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola in 2013 and PK in 2014. “Right now, maybe I’m at a stage in my life and career where I have the luxury of doing lesser films. But earlier, everyone I met would advice me to do more films. I never really saw any sense in that because you can’t be doing films for the sake of doing more work. For me, when I come out to the audience, it has to be something different, so they can remember me, it solidifies your career... Fortunately, I’ve stayed away from signing films too quickly or on a whim and today that has paid off.” The year gone by was one full of success for Anushka. Both her films, Sultan and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, were box-office hits. “It’s been really hectic. I was constantly shooting. Apart from Sultan and ADHM, I shot for my next production, Phillauri. And we are also almost through with most of the shoot for (filmmaker) Imtiaz Ali’s project (tentatively titled, The Ring). So I feel quite consumed and feel I’m doing lots of work,” says the actor, who prefers to choose projects where her role requires time and the nature of the character, her commitment.

Special hat-trick for new Sublime South Africa smash dad Kane as Spurs win Sri Lanka to sweep series

LONDON, JANUARy 14 (REUtERS): Tottenham Hotspur strengthened their push for the Premier League title with a 4-0 stroll over West Bromwich Albion on a special Saturday for their hat-trick hero Harry Kane. Kane, who became a father for the first time last Sunday, celebrated with a treble -- and it could have been more -- as Spurs coasted to a surprisingly easy win, their seventh straight victory in all competitions, to move into second in the table. Kane's crisply-finished goal after 12

minutes was the prelude to total Spurs domination and he came close to adding to his tally several times in the first half, with the excellent Ben Foster tipping one shot against the post. Gareth McAuley, on an ill-fated 200th West Brom appearance, inadvertently deflected Christian Eriksen's 26th minute shot past Foster and Kane struck with two sharp volleys in the last 15 minutes, the hat-trick goal coming from a lovely Dele Alli assist, to take his season's tally to 15 in all competitions.

JOHANNESBUR G, JANUARy 14 (REUtERS): South Africa took 16 Sri Lanka wickets in a little over two sessions to secure a ruthless victory by an innings and 118 runs in the third and final test at the Wanderers on Saturday. After posting 426 in their first innings on Friday, South Africa bowled Sri Lanka out for 131 before lunch on day three, before dismissing the out-gunned sub-continent side again for 177 to complete a 3-0 series sweep. All of the home seamers claimed wickets on a pitch that had plenty of steep bounce and more than enough lateral movement to leave the Sri Lankan batsmen flailing. Left-arm fast bowler Wayne Parnell, who took six wickets for 89 runs over the two innings, was perhaps the pick, while Kagiso Rabada (5-94) was unlucky not to pick up more with some hostile spells. D ebutant s eamer Duanne Olivier (5-57) will be pleased with his return in helpful conditions, while Vernon Philander (4-63) also pitched in. South Africa made short work of wrapping up

the tourists’ first innings after Sri Lanka resumed the day on 80 for four. Philander started the rot when he induced an edge from Dinesh Chandimal to wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock with the batsman on five, before Rabada grabbed the key wicket of Sri Lanka captain Angelo Matthews (19) soon afterwards as De Kock produced a magnificent diving catch in front of

first slip. Olivier claimed his first test wicket when Herath top-edged a vicious bouncer and was caught by Stephen Cook, and later removed Upul Tharanga (24), before Parnell took two wickets to wrap up the tail. South Africa captain Faf du Plessis enforced the follow-on and Sri Lanka were quickly on the back foot again as Rabada accounted for opener Kaushal Silva for

a first-ball duck. The tourists simply could not cope with the accuracy of the home side’s seamers. The impressive Olivier snapped up two more quick wickets, with Dhananjaya de Silva (12) and Mathews (10) both caught at second slip by Du Plessis, who leapt to an almost impossible height to pluck the ball out of the air for the latter dismissal.

The game was up for Sri Lanka when Rabada rattled the stumps of opener Dimuth Karunaratne (50), who had a provided lone resistance. Sri Lanka went to tea at 124 for six in their second innings and tried to hit their way out of trouble after the interval, but the home side proved too clinical and wrapped up the innings less than 10 overs after the restart.

Barca removes director after Messi remarks ANKA informs coaches, judges BARcELONA, JANUARy 14 (REUtERS): Barcelona removed Pere Gratacos as their institutional sporting relations director on Friday after he claimed that Lionel Messi "would not be as good" without his teammates. The club acted swiftly after Gratacos had made his comments about the man regarded widely as the world's best player following Friday's King's Cup draw in Madrid. "Leo is one of the most important people in the team, but it's not just about him," Gratacos told reporters. "He would not be as good without (Andres) Iniesta, Neymar and company, but Messi is the best." Barca issued a statement hours later confirming Gratacos had been released from his duties after "he had expressed a personal opinion publicly not in line with that of the club." A club statement said: "The decision has been taken by Barcelona's director of sports Albert Soler, who will assume the role from now on. "Gratacos will continue to be linked to Barcelona, doing the rest of the tasks that he was pursuing in the Masia 360 project." Barcelona's swift response demonstrates the current sensitivity surrounding Messi at a time when the

UFC president Dana White on Friday weighed in on talk about a possible bout between Floyd Mayweather and mixed martial arts champion Conor McGregor, saying he would offer $25 million to each plus pay-per-view money. “I’ll tell you what Floyd, here’s a real offer and I’m the guy that can actually make the offer and I’m actually making a real offer," White said on Colin Cowherd's "The Herd" radio talk show on FS1. "We pay you $25 million, we’ll pay Conor $25 million and then we’ll talk about pay-per-view at a certain number. There’s a real offer,” White said. Despite the sum, the offer is not likely to stir enough interest from Mayweather. Earlier this week, Mayweather said

LONDON, JANUARy 14 (iANS): The rumour mill has it that English football league leaders Chelsea are eager to replace Diego Costa with Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata in the January transfer window. According to a report in Italian website Calciomercato, Morata was contacted by Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte after a bust-up with Costa recently. The Spain striker was left out of their Saturday's tie against Leicester City. With big money offers from China for Spanish international Costa, the London club is eyeing a replacement and has put Morata at the top of their club is hoping to tie the 29-year-old list of players to buy. Keep calm on Messi deal, says Barca coach BARcELONA, JANUARy 14 (AFP): Barcelona need to avoid a growing sense of hysteria felt by fans, fellow players and media over protracted negotiations to extend superstar striker Lionel Messi's contract, his coach Luis Enrique said Friday. With just 18 months left on the 29-year-old Argentine's deal, Enrique insisted there is no need to panic. "We have to remain calm," Luis Enrique said, suggesting the club would not be rushed or panicked. "We're not getting involved in that," the coach insisted amid speculation the player may eventually move on. "The rhythm and the way this is worked out will be dictated by the club and Leo Messi himself." "I don't know about numbers,

he would fight McGregor for a guaranteed $100 million while offering the UFC lightweight champion $15 million and a share of pay-per-view buys. "I'm a businessman and it makes business sense," the 39-year-old American, who retired in September 2015 after compiling a 49-0 record, told ESPN this week. "Bring him over to the boxing world, and I'll show him what it's like." Irishman McGregor, the UFC's biggest pay-per-view draw, has been challenging Mayweather to a showdown for months. Mayweather, who won world titles in five weight divisions, took home earnings in excess of $800 million over his 19-year boxing career including an estimated $230 million total from his 2015 "Fight of the Century" against Manny Pacquiao.

The Rockets dropped back-toback games for the first time this season as they struggled from threepoint range. After connecting on 58.3 percent of their shots in the first half the Rockets went cold. They missed 21 of 24 three-point attempts in the second half. With the Rockets down by four with less than a minute to play, Houston's Trevor Ariza and Ryan Anderson both missed open three-point attempts. "We didn't make shots," Rockets guard James Harden said. "Trevor had a really good look, Ryan had a really good look. Simple." The Utah Jazz romped to a 110-77 home victory over the Detroit Pistons. Rodney hood scored a seasonhigh 27 points, making seven of eight three-point attempts. George Hill added 22 points and Gordon Hayward contributed 20 for the Jazz.
