How depression hampers memory New York, JaNuarY 7 (IaNS): The ability to remember information declines when people are in depressive mood, new research shows. “When depressive thoughts are present, people with depressed mood are unable to remove their attention from this information, leading to deficits in their memory,” explained the study’s lead author Nicholas Hubbard from University of Texas, Dallas. The study included 157 undergraduate students. Of them, 60 participants were classified as having depressed mood and 97 as having nondepressed mood. Participants with and without depressed mood were asked to respond ‘True’ or ‘False’ to a sentence featuring either depressive thoughts (e.g., “I am sad,” “People don’t like me”) or neutral information (e.g. “Most people agree that Monday is the worst day of the week”), and then remember a string of numbers at the end. People with depressed mood forgot more numbers than people without depressed mood when they responded to the sentence featuring negative information, but remembered just as many numbers when they responded to neutral information.

DImapur, JaNuarY 7 (mexN): In a show down of sorts, both camps of the NPF met the Governor of Nagaland on Wednesday, January 7, in an attempt to lay claim, or hold on to, the government in Nagaland respectively. Chief Minister TR Zeliang along with NPF party president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu met Nagaland Governor PB Acharya in Kohima today. Sources said the duo informed the Governor that the government is stable. Kaito Aye, leader of the “majority” group, the ‘NPF Legislature Party,’ along with his colleagues met the Governor of Nagaland and “staked claim to form a new popular government in Nagaland.” Kaito was accompanied by Kuzholuzo Neinu, CM Chang, Deo Nukhu, Dr. TM Lotha and Imkong Imchen. “We have demanded the immediate dismissal of the minority government headed by TR Zeliang, who has lost the support and confidence of the majority. We demand that he immediately step down and pave the way for installation of a popular government in the greater interest of the people of Nagaland,” stated a press note from the spokesperson of the team, Imkong L Imchen. According to it, they assured the Governor that a stable government will be formed and “we will build up a strong relationship with the NDA Government to strengthen the peace process and bring about accelerated all round development of the State.” The leaders further appealed to all sections of the
parIS, JaNuarY 7 (IaNS): Two masked gunmen suspected to be Islamists Wednesday massacred 12 people after storming a French satirical magazine’s office here, killing among others a cartoonist who drew a controversial cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed. World leaders denounced the cold-blooded mayhem at the office of “Charlie Hebdo” that left over 20 people injured, four in critical condition. Indian President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined world leaders to denounce the carnage. Detailed report on page 9

It may be recalled that Abei Tepa, Advisor, Angami Students’ Union, Chakhroma range was travelling from Dimapur to Medziphema in a taxi along with other passengers on the evening of January 5 when he was allegedly assaulted by the taxi driver. Suspecting that the passengers may be illegal immigrants, Tepa had requested the driver to stop at the Chumukedima Check Gate for police verification, to which the driver reportedly refused. After awhile he told the driver to stop the car over which they had an argument and the driver allegedly assaulted him. Following this development, Sedevikho Angami, General Secretary, ASU, stated that the Chakhroma Students’ Union in collaboration with the ASU “may intensify ILP checking.”
people and the party organization to “be calm, be firm and united as we have to uphold and respect the mandate of the people.” They also appealed to the NPF President to “release” the MLAs who have allegedly been “forcefully confined under house arrest conditions” in a hotel in Kohima.

Mhonthung Patton, and general secretary, Ekonthung Kikon, supported and upheld the leadership of Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu and chief minister TR Zeliang, and appealed the NPF Legislators and Party functionaries to be “loyal to the party.” The NPF Pughoboto Division also endorsed the suspension of the seven NPF legislators for their “anti-party activities.” At an emergency executive meeting, members of the Division reaffirmed their support to the NPF under president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu and general secretary KG Kenye, and the NPF led DAN III government under the leadership of TR Zeliang and Y. Vikheho Swu. This was stated in a press statement from the Division’s president, Kughakhu Sheqi, and general secretary, Hotoshe Sheqi.
NPF Divisions express support The NPF divisions of Kohima, Wokha and Pughoboto have reiterated their support for decisions made by NPF president, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu. “The news item appears NPF Kohima Division extend its support to Kaito Leadership was baseless and it was without the knowledge of the NPF Kohima Division. Some vested individual published the false propaganda to tarnish the image of the party and misguiding the general public,” stated a rejoiner from NPF Kohima division president, Guonei-u Angami, and its general secretary, Avi-o Tetso. The NPF Kohima maintained that it will stand by “whatever decision or action” is taken by the party authority, further extending its support to the decisions of party president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu. It appealed to party men and women to “stay calm and unite to make a stronger party in future.” The NPF Wokha Division endorsed the decision of the NPF president in suspending the seven (7) elected members of NPF from both Primary and Active membership of the Party. A press note from the Division’s president, P.
ing, then their dim light is blocked by trees. Even as new concrete blocks of road dividers have been put in place, hazards remain on the roads. Either most of the roads in Dimapur are without streetlights or poorly lit and so dividers prove even more dangerous at night. Compounding the problem with poor streetlights, the road dividers both old and new, are not immediately visible from a distance at night, owing to lack of reflective paint or reflectors in it. There have been several instances of drivers ramming their vehicles onto it due to poor visibility. Roads in Dimapur are narrow by itself and the recently constructed huge concrete road dividers continue to further narrow the roads as the old dividers did. These improperly designed road dividers have occupied much needed road space thus reducing vehicle space. With the growing number of vehicles, more road safety measures and steps to reduce traffic congestion need to be put in place by the appropriate authorities.
Dimapur | January 7
The dangerous, spiky, rusty iron barricades and grills that acted as road dividers along Nyamo Lotha Road from Plaza Point (Foot Over Bridge) till SP Office in Dimapur have been replaced with concrete blocks some months back. With vehicles crashing on to road dividers as one of the most common sights of accidents along the streets in town, the old road divider structures with protruding iron tips often proved to be a danger in itself. However, these hazardous road dividers have now been replaced with fund drawn from the Dimapur District Common Pool fund 2014-15. On earlier occasions as well, new road dividers were constructed from Plaza Point till Clock Tower junction under the District Common Pool 2013-14. In the same year and same Common Pool, fallen fencing walls around District Hospital complex were also rebuilt. However, the old and hazardous road dividers remain neglected along the
BJP Nagaland cautions The BJP Nagaland has cautioned that the NPF’s “internal crisis” should not be allowed to escalate into “constitutional breakdown.” It urged all concerned parties to “strive to save the democratic process in the State.” In a press statement from its media cell, the BJP Nagaland expressed concern about the NPF ‘internal crisis’ that has entered the fourth day. “As a responsible alliance member of DAN,” the BJP Nagaland felt that “the stability of the DAN Government is equally every party’s moral responsibility.” It appealed to both the groups to “amicably resolve their differences at the earliest.”

Three swine flu deaths in Delhi, 8 new cases reported
New DelhI, JaNuarY 7 (IaNS): Delhi Wednesday reported the third death caused by swine flu, and eight new cases, which prompted the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the city health department to hold a meeting to review the situation.
