MP is first state to have ‘Happiness Department’ BHOPAL, JULy 15 (PTI): Madhya Pradesh on Friday became the first state in the country to set up ‘Happiness Department’,with chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan saying it will work to ensure “happiness in the lives of common people” on the lines of Bhutan. “The Cabinet has decided to constitute Happiness Department in the state,” said Chouhan, who will head the department at present. “Besides the basic necessities of Roti, Kapda aur Makaan (food, cloth and shelter) people need something more to be happy in their lives,” he said, adding a panel of experts will be formed in the newly constituted department, which will give suggestions to ensure happiness in the lives of the people. “Normally, happiness is measured with economic growth rate which is not entirely correct as our country for ages believed otherwise. There is something more which can bring happiness in the lives of people,” the chief minister said. He said the concept of happiness was already there in Bhutan, which has “Happiness Index” to measure happiness of its people. Announcing the ‘Happiness Department’ in April, Chouhan had said happiness will not come into the lives of people merely with materialistic possessions or development but by infusing positivity in their lives so that they don’t take extreme steps like suicide.

fuel Adulteration: AcAUt reject sit probe • Censures CM for remaining silent on the issue for 16 days • It is a conspiracy to derail work done by Dimapur Police • Will accept SIT only if Commissioner of Police, Dimapur heads the investigation
Due to high concentration of vegetable oil, hair oil and adulterated petrol in the kerosene...his kerosene lamp exploded!

DIMAPUR, JULy 15 (MexN): A wary Against Corruption and Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) Nagaland on Friday out rightly rejected the formation of Special Investigation Team (SIT) by the Nagaland Government to probe the fuel adulteration case. It said the SIT probe would be accepted only if it is headed by the present Commissioner of Police, Dimapur. Stating reasons, ACAUT Media Cell in a press statement has alleged that the SIT announcement is nothing but an eyewash and a conspiracy to derail the excellent work done by the Dimapur Police in investigating the case. It alleged that the formation of SIT by the Nagaland state government was merely to ensure that it gives a clean chit to all the higher-ups in the government involved or linked to the larger adulteration racket. ACAUT also expressed apprehension that the SIT during its course of investigation will not touch the issue of siphoning of SK Oil to the fuel adulteration market. It suspected that the SIT members, irrespective of their personal integrity and efficiency, would be compelled to compromise on the issue by the state government and therefore will be “mere rubberstamps.” ACAUT also contended that when

4 of the 5 accused ‘kingpins’ have been arrested by the Dimapur Police, the need for SIT does not arise unless the attempt is to sabotage the intensity and the commitment of the Dimapur Police’s investigation so that higher officials are not implicated. Further, as a beforehand announcement, ACAUT said it will also reject the formation of any so-called ‘judicial enquiry’ in case it’s being contemplated. “It is a fact that for a state which is one of the most corrupted in India, the state judiciary hasn’t convicted even a single person on corruption matter. This speaks volumes about the efficacy and integrity of our state’s judicial system,” the corruption watchdog stated. It alleged that there “have been numerous instances when the judiciary
has undone the good work done by the police on sensitive issues by issuing bails even on non-bailable sections thereby giving rise to suspicions that the judiciary is under the spell of politicians and corruptive influences.” ACAUT, however, said it is willing to accept the SIT provided the present Commissioner of Dimapur Police head the body. While espousing full faith in the Dimapur Police to carry out the investigation to its logical conclusion, ACAUT said it cannot allow handpicked SIT to usurp the power of Dimapur Police. “If the intention of the state government and the Chief Minister is sincere, the subject matter of Dimapur Police Commissioner heading the SIT should be accepted,” it stressed. ACAUT also hit out at Chief Minis-
ter TR Zeliang who is also the portfolioin charge of Food and Civil Supplies Department for remaining silent for 16 days on the fuel adulteration issue. This silence is an admission in itself that the government wished for the issue to die a natural death, it stated, adding that the silence of the Chief Minister and the government for such long periods in any other states would have led to “massive street protests leading to unwarranted situations, even deaths.” Meanwhile, ACAUT has lauded the Dimapur Police for arresting 4 of the 5 kingpins involved in the fuel adulteration case. It also ridiculed the claim made by the F&CS Secretary that the FIRs were lodged by the police, when in fact it was ACAUT who filed the FIR, including one against the concerned department.
DIMAPUR, JULy 15 (MexN): The Dimapur police have arrested four of the five kingpins alleged by ACAUT Nagaland to be behind the fuel adulteration racket. The four, identified as Srikanth Jaiswal, Umesh Yadav, Naval Roy and Dinanath Prasad, were arrested on July 14. The total of arrests in connection to the case rose to 12 with the most recent arrest, a press release from the ADCP & PRO, Dimapur police stated. Others previously arrested were identified as: Ajay Prasad, Amar Choudhury, Mona Prasad, Mani Das, Ram Prasad Rai, Suresh Singh, Amarendra Kumar Singh and Prem Prasad. The Police in their press release did not reveal much on the intricacy of the investigation. It however assured that “the investigation of the case is being taken up in full earnest and sincerity.” While it sought the cooperation and support of all concerned, the Police also warned of legal prosecution against any person or agencies attempting to hamper the investigation. With the state government instituting a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Inspector General of Police (Range) to probe the case, which has broadened the scope of the investigation, the release added that the Dimapur Police will still continue to render assistance and cooperation to the SIT. Report from other sources added that the four had initially applied for Anticipatory Bail but the police filed fresh FIRs to affect the arrest.
Disburse scholarship AAP Nagaland seeks disqualification of 24 Parly Secys resort to legal recourse if at the earliest: AncsU ‘Will appropriate action is not taken’
DIMAPUR, JULy 15 (MexN): Stating that student community is facing immense hardship due to delay in disbursal of scholarship, the ANCSU today appealed to the Director of Higher Education for its early release. Seeking the director’s prompt and necessary action, the All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) in a letter appended by President Zhoku Thuluo, General Secretary Benjong Longchar and Education Secretary Viranu Ltu said that the delay has adversely affected many students as they are dependent on the scholarship for their academic requirements.
“The cold delay in the disbursal of scholarship has created further confusion and discouragement to the students’ community as a whole,” it said. “This is unjust on the part of the government and the concerned department.” In this context, ANCSU requested the director to take effective measures immediately and release all the scholarships at the earliest to avoid further “misunderstanding and inconveniences” between the students’ community and the concerned department as assured by Department of Higher Education on August 7, 2014.

World unites in horror at Nice carnage MLAs have no concern for own
Assembly predicaments: NPCC Ridicules ‘deathly silence’ in State Assembly DIMAPUR, JULy 15 (MexN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) today alleged that the Nagaland Legislators have no concerns for own respective Assembly predicaments. It resembles a ‘funeral service’ with no one raising anything and everyone maintaining a ‘deathly silence,’ NPCC President K. Therie said in a press statement ridiculing the lack of participation and short session of the recently concluded State Assembly Session held from July 12-14. “All the speakers in the Assembly speak of achievements resembling a funeral service while their minds and attention are focused on how to siphon off some more funds to bribe the voters in the next election.” The State Assembly is the highest forum for the people of Nagaland for self-determination but it does not even have question hour, it added. “This simply shows that Honourable MLAs have no concern over their own respective Assembly predicaments.”
While the MLAs reportedly joined together to solve the political problem, not a word was discussed as to how to solve the problem, it further scorned. “They have hoped that it will be solved soon. They don’t know when and they don’t want to know when.” NPCC also expressed shock over the ‘deadly silence’ of the MLAs though there are many pressing issues to discuss such as failed fiscal management; non-payment of salaries; anomalies highlighted by CAG Report; hue and cry against backdoor appointments; and decaying and depleting infrastructure etc. In the past, it was the most vibrant State Assembly and issues were discussed without fear or prejudice; solutions and resolutions were adopted giving a new direction to the state, it also maintained. “Because of the presence of strong opposition, corruption was checked. No Minister or bureaucrat was spared if found corrupt,” NPCC claimed. The Party further implied that while the administration and the police painstakingly took up the tasks to provide security and traffic regulation during assembly, all such efforts were wasted.
ULAANBAATAR/MOSCOW, JULy 15 (ReUTeRS): World leaders united in horror and pledged their determination to fight terrorism on Friday after a truck attack on a Bastille Day crowd in the French Riviera city of Nice killed 84 people. U.S. President Barack Obama, Russian President Vladimir Putin and European and Asian leaders meeting for a summit in Mongolia joined in condemnation of what they called a terrorist attack in messages to French President Francois Hollande. Police sources said the truck was driven by a 31-year Tunisian-born Frenchman known to authorities for petty crime but not Islamic radicalism, who was eventually shot dead after an exchange of gunfire with police. Dozens more people were injured. The dead included foreign tourists and students. European Council President Donald Tusk, speaking in the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar, captured the global shock when he spoke of the “tragic paradox that the subject of #NiceAttack was the people celebrating liberty, equality and fraternity”. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on the sidelines

of the Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM) in Mongolia: “All of us who have come together at the ASEM summit are united in our feeling of disbelief at the attack of mass murder in Nice.” New British Prime Minister Theresa May, whose country has just upset Paris and other European capitals by voting to leave the European Union, said Britain stood “shoulder to shoulder” with France. Putin, whose relations with the West have been strained over Russian actions in Ukraine
and Syria, went on Russian television to convey his condolences to Hollande after apparently being unable to reach him by telephone. “Dear Francois, Russia knows what terror is and the threats that it creates for all of us. Our people have more than once encountered similar tragedies and is deeply affected by the incident, sympathises with the French people, and feels solidarity with them,” he said, adding that Russian citizens were among the victims in Nice. In the Middle East, many
messages of sympathy and condemnation were laced with domestic agendas. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, whose country was hit just days ago by a coordinated gun and bomb attack on Istanbul airport by suspected Islamic State militants, said Turks could understand what France and the French people were going through. Saudi Arabia’s top clerical body condemned the French attack but said it should not distract the world from “the crimes of the Syrian regime”. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose settlement policies on Palestinian land have been criticised by France and other foreign countries, said Israel stood ready “to help the French government fight this evil until it is defeated”. A lone gunman ploughed a white truck into families celebrating the French national holiday after a traditional firework parade, driving nearly 2 km (1.5 miles) along the Promenade des Anglais seafront before he was shot dead. Britain and Belgium said their threat level was already severe, indicating they regard an attack is “highly likely”. Related news on page 9

sition of taxes and forced labour and as such some British troops suffered casualty in Mon and Tuensang district. He added that in 1887 one Anthropologist Butler (Horst) was injured at Pangi gate Lotha area and succumbed to his injury. Some religious preachers were also victimized in Mokokchung and so on. Inspection Bungalows were burnt down in villages like Chiechama, Kohima district. Because of unfriendly attitude and non –cooperation many Nagas suffered miserably in the hands of British authority. Many were jailed and punished in various ways. Sopu said that in 1879 war broke out between Nagas
and British troops and a battle was fought at Khonoma on 4 October 1879 in which D.C. G.H. Dhamant M. A. C.A was killed, again on 22nd November 1879 Major C.R. Cock Daac was killed and another major died. On account of these many families from Khonoma village migrated to some other village. Indeed the Nagas struggled and sacrificed much to protect and preserve their rich culture, tradition from British imperialism, Sopu said. He said from such facts and circumstances those freedom fighters, their successors and kith and kin should be given opportunity to avail benefits and welfare schemes etc. at par

Tuki seeks 10 days time for floor test, Governor firm on Saturday Itanagar/guwahatI, July 15 (IanS): Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki met Governor Tathagata Roy on Friday and sought ten days time to prove his majority in the house but a Raj Bhavan statement later made it clear that the floor test has to be held on Saturday only as slated. "I have met the Governor today and appealed to him to give me at least 10 days time to prove my majority in the floor test. Its a landlocked state and its also monsoon season. Most of my MLAs are out of the state and they would not be able to attend the session on Saturday," he told waiting journalists after coming out of the Raj Bhavan in Itanagar. State Home Minister Tanga
Byaling had also accompanied Tuki to the meeting. On Thursday night, Tuki had also sent a letter to the Governor saying that he has got only 48 hours to prove his majority in the house since his arrival in Itanagar. "Many of my MLAs/ colleagues are out of station and I am trying to contact them," he said, noting most were unaware as he had taken charge of the office only on Thursday. In his letter, he had also cited the Sarkaria Commission's recommendations on holding floor test, which held "reasonable time" must be given to the Chief Minister to prove his majority, and that it had mentioned "30 days" as "reasonable time" unless there is very urgent business to be transacted.
Talking to media persons after the meeting, Tuki said: "The Governor has told me that he would consult legal experts and then take a decision. I hope he would be kind enough to consider my appeal." However, the Raj Bhavan statement said that Tuki and Roy "discussed overall development of the state and law and order issues" as well as "the ensuing floor test in the State Legislative Assembly to be convened tomorrow (Saturday)". "Citing apprehension that the present state government does not command required majority in the Assembly, the Governor asked the Chief Minister to prove his majority in the floor of the state Legislative As-
sembly tomorrow (16th July). He also emphasised that sense of security amongst the people must prevail and deterrent action must be taken to ensure foolproof law and order arrangement in the state," it said. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Kalikho Pul, who had unseated Tuki in February this year with the help of a faction of dissident Congress legislators and BJP members, claimed that he has got the support of 42 legislators in the 60-member house, whose effective strength is 58 now after two members resigned earlier. Pul, who is camping in a hotel in Guwahati since last two days with 42 legislators, also expressed fear that Tuki might try to resort to "horse trading" if more time is
given for the floor test. He, however, expressed his confidence over the support of 42 legislators backing him and said that he would defeat Tuki easily in the floor test. In obedience of the Supreme Court judgment on Wednesday, Roy has reinstated Tuki as the Chief Minister of the state and asked him to call a session of the state legislative assembly on Saturday (July 16) to prove his majority. In the Arunachal Pradesh assembly, there are 30 Peoples' Party of Arunachal Pradesh (PPA) members, 11 of the BJP, 15 of the Congress and two Independents. Pul claims that he has the support of 29 PPA legislators, 11 BJP and two Independent legislators.
Manipur likely to go to polls in March ImPhal, July 15 (IanS): Manipur will have to go to polls before March 18, 2017 when the term of the present assembly ends, and no instructions has been received for advancing the elections, an official said on friday. "While the date will be formally announced by the Election Commission of India, we are keeping everything in readiness," state Chief Secretary Oinam Nabakishore, who is also the chief election officer told reporters here. He also said that that state government is urging the central government to start the sports university immediately in the Khuman Lampak sports complex as it will take over five years to construct the buildings and other facilities. Referring to the official letter to the Manipur government about the court cases relating to some of the land land earmarked for the sports university, he said that the central government had been assured that the matter would be sorted out soon. "Though the central government wanted 200 acres of land for the university, the Manipur government had given 336.96 acres of land," he said. However, since owners of 33 acres of land had gone to court, the Union Sports Ministry had asked the state government to make a clear-cut statement on the issue since construction cannot be undertaken while court cases are pending. The Union government had sanctioned Rs 100 crore two years back for the construction of the university. Nabakishore said that the Parliament is likely to pass a bill in this regard during its monsoon session, which starts on Monday.

Kaziranga: NGT for report on steps to curb wildlife casualties new DelhI, July 15 (PtI): The National Green Tribunal has directed the Assam government to expeditiously prepare a detailed project report (DPR) on measures to curb growing wildlife casualties due to vehicular movement on the National Highway-37 passing through the Kaziranga National Park. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar also summoned top officials of state government and Kaziranga National Park to inform it about compliance of its earlier orders on the issue. "The concerned Secretary of Government of Assam, Director of Kajiranga National Park, officers from Ministry of Road Transport and Highway, National Highway Authority of India, Secretary, Public Works Department and Ministry of Road Transport shall be present before the Tribunal and submit compliance report with regard to the directions of the Tribunal passed earlier. "Tribunal shall also be informed as to what is the status of DPR. Whether any DPR in relation to construction of fly over is there or not," the bench said while posting the matter for next hearing on August 24. The NGT had earlier directed Ministry of Environment and Forests to take clear instructions as to whether or not it proposed to issue any draft notification in relation to Kaziranga Eco Sensitive Zone. The tribunal's direction came during a hearing on a plea filed by environmentalist opposing expansion of NH-37 which passes from Jakhalabandha to Bokakhat through the Kaziranga Park.

Lalzirliana, Chief Secretary Lalmalsawma and senior officials of the police, CPMF and BSF deliberated during the meeting on beefing up security in the border areas. The Chief Minister told the meeting that though there has been no specific threat along the Mizoram border following the Dhaka terror attacks earlier this month, there should not be complacency about the security of the state. In Tripura, in view of the recent terrorist attack
and Tripura government have asked the security forces to maintain a maximum vigil along the Bangladesh border to foil any attempt of intrusion and illegal crossborder movement, officials said here on Friday. An official of the Mizoram home department said the Mizoram government has instructed the police, Central Para-Military Forces (CPMF), Border Security Force (BSF) and the intelligence agencies to maintain strict and close vigil on the border in view of the recent terrorist attacks in Bangladesh. "A meeting on internal security on Thursday, chaired by Chief Minister
with Bangladesh has been further tightened. "We have taken several steps along the India-Bangladesh frontier to foil any cross-border movements and entry of any inimical elements," BSF's Tripura frontier Inspector General J.B. Govt must strip ICAI, ICSI, ‘centre on right track to meet solar energy target’ MCI of regulatory job fast New Delhi, July 15 (AgeNcies): There is no doubt that cases like Kingfisher, Sahara, Saradha and Satyam would not have gained such proportions if there had been a diligent auditing and regulatory mechanism in the country. The irony is, though it has been felt for quite some time that regulation of professionals like chartered accountants, company secretaries and doctors, too, is hugely lacking, nothing much has been done by the government, apart from reacting to the big cases of fraud as and when they came to light. These professions are currently regulated through bodies like the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) and the Medical Council of India (MCI). While the ICAI’s handling of the cases like Satyam has been under question, the fact that MCI has also failed to regulate the medical profes-
sion has also been brought out by different studies. So, the government’s move, as reported by The Financial Express, to overhaul these watchdogs—which also act as the representative bodies of these professional services—by taking away their regulatory powers to remove the conflict of interest that leads to serious problems and minimises the chances of tough oversight, is a step in the right direction. If the ICAI, ICSI and MCI are focused just on improving the standards in their respective professions and cease to act as regulators—and independent regulators are given charge of the regulatory job in these areas—the much-required stricter oversight on the lines of international best practices could be ensured. The commerce ministry is now pushing this proposal to improve India’s handling of the services sector and project India as a global service hub by capitalising on the trade facili-
tation agreement under the WTO. The biggest advantage of separate regulators for these professions, on the lines of Sebi or the Competition Commission of India, would be that it will plug the possibilities of reluctance or delay in taking action against members of their own professional fraternity. At present, the main decisionmaking body of the ICAI, ICSI and MCI are their councils. While the MCI has 100-odd members, the ICAI has 40 members, and the ICSI 15. Though considering the clout of these bodies, it will not be easy to just limit them to devising standards in their respective professions, it is also a fact that these three areas need independent and effective regulators urgently. Prime minister Narendra Modi, therefore, will do well by expediting this process as part of the effort to improve the business environment in the country.

New Delhi, July 15 (AgeNcies): What’s telling about Pokemon Go’s international success is that the game is only officially available in Australia, New Zealand, US, and recently, UK and Germany. Eager fans have resorted to sideloading the game on Android or creating an iTunes account for the aforementioned countries to play the game on iOS. And while an international rollout for Pokemon Go is reportedly in the works, it may not happen as quickly as everyone thinks. If fortyseven communications, the agency which represents Pokemon Go developer Niantic is to be believed, don’t expect it in your country any time soon. “The team is currently heads down working on the game. We do not have any announced plans for countries beyond New Zealand, Australia, US and Germany at the moment,” wrote Chris Kramer, Vice President of fortyseven communications in an email to IGN Asia. What appears odd with this response is that Kramer fails to mention the UK which got the game yesterday. Nonetheless “we

do not have any announced plans” doesn’t mean the game will not be made available at all, it could very well mean what it says, there are simply no plans to talk of at this time. It doesn’t help matters that Pokemon Go’s servers haven’t gotten much better post-launch. The impact of players who have sideloaded the game, in addition to those in countries where Pokemon Go is available, is that the game has been unplayable for a vast number of people due to its servers unable to deal with the load. So much so that developer Niantic who made Pokemon Go along with Nintendo and The Pokemon Company is delaying its release in other markets till this is fixed. “We thought the game would be popular, but it obviously struck a nerve,” Niantic CEO John Hanke said, stating that the launch in other countries has been “paused until we’re comfortable”. Despite the rabid interest the franchise has generated over the years, something Niantic is aware of, it’s safe to say Pokemon Go’s success has caught everyone by surprise.

Kapoor sounded optimistic about the sustainability and viability of projects when solar tariff emerging out of reverse bidding process has been falling. Solar tariffs fell to 4.34 a kWhr, which is the lowest as of now. Fortum Finnsurya Energy quoted that tariff to bag mandate to set up a 70-MW solar plant under NTPC’s Bhadla Solar Park tender. “Tariff has been varying across locations. Developers have their own calculations to make projects viable and sustainable. Low tariffs are coming from various tenders. It is not that tariff falls for only one occasion,” Kapoor said. Citing a recent bidding for 130 MW of solar projects in Rajasthan, he said: “There are 10 projects, each has the capacity of 10 MW. In that case, tariff falls to 4.35 a kWhr.”

As on March 2016, solar installation stood at 6,700 MW. At present it is around 7,700 MW. Cumulative capacity of 17,000 MW is expected by March 2017. Re-invent dignity of labor: Khriehu urges students Our Correspondent Kohima | July 15
Parliamentary Secretary for Youth Resources & Sports, Music Task Force and State Lotteries Khriehu Liezietsu today urged the Naga youths to re-invent dignity of labor instead of aiming for only government jobs and other white collar jobs. He said this while addressing the gathering during the 49th annual freshers’ day of Kohima College as invitee. Liezietsu said Nagas should also display “our own skills” and capacity by becoming skilled workers and entrepreneurs, which is the only way the state economy will bloom as Nagaland is very dependent on outsiders. He reminded it is high time that our society and state become self reliant, physically and mentally prepare ourselves to do all jobs for our devel-

Why the humble milk can is a design icon Ian Spellerberg
T

hey are functional and inspiring, yet no art or design museum has celebrated the good, old container. New Zealandbased environment scientist Ian Spellerberg shares his fascination for milk cans, particularly those from India Throughout the world there are some commonly used objects that need no explanation or introduction no matter where you are. The humble milk can, for example, is recognisable the world over. There are different designs but the most common design (straight sides and narrow neck) has been used for more than 200 years and is still used today. Other milk can designs go back thousands of years. Why is it that such a common object with such a simple design and used the world over has never been celebrated in a museum of art and design? I live in an old farmhouse where most of the land has been sold to neighbouring farms. Like with many farms in the areas, there are old and rusty milk cans lying about. These are no longer in use and are slowly rusting away. I was looking at some beside one of our sheds, and being a scientist, I started asking myself questions about milk cans. Who made them? When were they invented? Were they all made of steel? Are milk cans still made today? Are they all the same shape? I searched many books and milk company records but was not able to find answers to all these questions. I decided to find out all I could about milk cans for the purpose of preserving that information. I have been gathering information (from magazines, books, reports, retired farmers and retired dairy workers) for a few years. I have found it interesting that I often came across India during my search for both examples of milk cans and for information. Milk containers date back thousands of years whether they are used for milk from cows, buffalos, goats or other domestic animals. Many materials have been used to make milk containers including clay, leather, copper, bronze, steel, aluminium and plastic. Some designs for milk containers have remained unchanged for thousands of years. For example, the spherical shape of the milk cans (jugs) used on the Islands of Guernsey (one of the Channel Isles off the coast of France) has altered very little over the last thousand years. Originally made of tin-plated steel, they were later made of copper with tin-plating on the inside. Another very old design is the brass milk pot used in Rajasthan and carried on the head by women (a few pots at a time). I have seen many photographs of these brass milk pots

The design for Guernsey copper pots milk or cream cans dates back to thousands of years. A new one and others made in the last 20 years. transportation. Hand carts, carts pulled by dogs, donkeys, horses or buffalo have all been common sights. Dog carts were particularly in common use in central Europe for many years. With mechanisation came transport of milk cans by trucks, trains and tankers. It was the transport by rail that brought about the conical shape of milk cans (called milk churns after the design of wooden butter churns). The wide base provided greater stability and when the cans were empty, the conical shape made it easy to stack them two or three high. In many countries, milk is now transported by tanker. However, stainless steel and plastic milk cans are still made today in several countries, particularly in India. They are also used in many countries whether it be for cow’s milk, buffalo milk or goat’s milk. The milk can has been part of human society for a very long time and continues to play a part in society. Indeed, throughout history, the milk can could be said to have fostered communication within societies. Many old retired farmers have told me that for many families the purchase of their first milk can was a very special event. I have found many old photographs showing the family proudly standing by their first milk
ample, there is an annual milk can rolling competition that takes place along the main streets. Even paintings and ornaments have been inspired by the typical milk can design. Silver salt and pepper pots have been made in the image of the milk can. Other objects include money boxes, match holders and glue pots. Modern examples include milk can-shaped containers holding confectionary or string. I don’t think that the continuing use of the milk can design is about nostalgia or clinging to old values. I believe that the milk can design is seen as something of a beauty. Some of the best modern uses of the milk can design have been for hanging lamps or desk lamps. I happen to be writing this article in the light of a ‘milk can’ desk lamp that was made in India. The milk can has served us well for centuries. But little information has been persevered about milk cans. The design is repeated in art and in ornaments. Surely that design has a place in museums of art and design. I would love to hear from any reader about anything to do with the design of milk cans, and particularly anecdotes about making them and using them.
but I know nothing about them. The most common and enduring shape for milk cans the world over has been a straight sided steel can with a narrow neck, two handles and a tight-fitting lid. However, some milk cans are square (there have been square glass milk bottles), or cylindrical from top to bottom, or conical shaped, and even oval shaped. The range in size or volume of milk cans comes as a big surprise. The largest examples I have in my collection hold about 25 gallons. Filled with milk, they would weigh about 198lbs (90kg). The people who moved these cans must have had considerable strength and skill. Milk cans of about one gallon are common. There were smaller milk cans of one pint, half a pint, and a quarter of a pint. The smallest I have is just 1/8th of a pint! It would have been used for delivering a small quantity of cream. Transport of milk cans has varied enormously over the years. The practice of carrying milk cans on the head, or balancing two cans on a yoke around the neck, has largely disappeared. Milk cans balanced on a bicycle is still a common sight in some countries, including in parts of India. In England, during the late 19th C. speciallymade tricycles were a common method of
can. Empty milk cans were sometimes used as a means of sending handwritten messages or transporting dairy products such as butter or cheese. Long after some milk cans have served their purpose, they have sometimes been preserved as folk art. Cleaned of rust and brightly painted, they now sit proudly in the house as a reminder of days gone past. But it’s not just old cans that have been turned into folk art. There is now a demand for painted cans that look like milk cans. I have some beautiful examples that were made in India. Everyone knows what recycling means. But have you heard of upcycling? This is about extending the life of an object by using it for a different purpose. Old milk cans are probably the best example. No longer used to hold milk, the cans become letter boxes, lamp stands, garden rollers, seats, tables, pots for plants, bread and flour bins, soft drink dispensers and umbrella stands. For centuries, many product designs have been inspired by nature. Milk cans were designed as a necessity. They were designed to be functional. Why then has the typical milk can been the subject of some games and even sports? In Ireland, for ex-

here are six main types of stories in fiction. That’s what computer scientists found after teaching a machine to map the emotional arc of a huge corpus of literature. The overall research they did is fascinating (I wrote about it in greater detail here), but several smaller components of the work are compelling in their own right. To prepare a machine to carry out a sentiment analysis, for instance, computer scientists had to assign a happiness index to 10,222 individual words. That way, as the machine scanned passages from books, it could assess the emotional arc of the narrative. But how do you decide how happy a word is? In this case, researchers at the University of Vermont and the University of Adelaide enlisted the help of the crowd. Using the website Mechanical Turk, where anyone can sign up for odd jobs—many of them related to academic research—researchers asked people to rate the happiness quotient of the words they encountered. In the end, they had a huge list of words as ranked by happiness. The happiest word: Laughter.

erala is the first state in India to introduce a "fat tax" on burgers, pizzas, doughnuts and tacos served in branded restaurants. The recently-elected Communist government says the 14.5% tax is aimed at making people more conscious about food choices and curbing obesity. "This is more of a preventive measure as Kerala's food habits are changing dramatically. People are eating a lot of junk food and rejecting traditional food," says Finance Minister Thomas Isaac. healthy. I don't think the tax is a bad thing but it has to be comprehensive and acceptable to all the stakeholders," says Mr Alexander. "Otherwise it is discriminatory. Just because you serve pizza and burger doesn't mean other people are serving healthy food." This is a sentiment echoed by Annie Joseph, a self-professed fast food enthusiast. "We already pay a number of taxes. This [fat tax] will just add to that. Instead the government should promote health food and bring down their prices," she says. Broadening the net But the government isn't unduly worried about the criticism and says it is targeting only the "elite section of the society" with this tax and that its main aim is to improve public health and get people thinking on what they eat. Levying taxes on high calorie food items and drinks is one way to rein in consumption. Denmark introduced a fat tax in 2011 but repealed it by 2013 when it found consumers shopping across the border for high fat goods. Hungary taxes foods high in sugar, salt and fat. Mexico taxes sugary drinks, breakfast cereals and sweets. In the US, battles are being fought over taxes on sugary drinks. Philadelphia became the first major city in the US to introduce a soda tax. Meanwhile, the Kerala government has plans to impose the tax on more food items, including refined flour goods and sugary drinks in the near future. "The fight against fat has just begun," says minister Thomas Isaac. Supriya Menon is an independent journalist based in Kerala

n his autobiography, ‘A Naga’s Quest for fulfillment,’ seasoned politician, only surviving signatories of the 16 point agreement, a firsthand witness to Indian Political history from PT Jawaharlal Nehru to nowModi, Dr. SC Jamir takes the readers on a whirlwind tour into his historyembedded extraordinary and defining life with no reservation. As a personal account, thus, the narratives would be fiercely contradicted and contested; may potentially create antagonism in some quarters, yet, his role as an integral part of Naga history in the past few decades is not to be negated. There is a great possibility of eulogizing some and antagonizing many others - a thin line between fact and fiction to blur the path of truth, Jamir wrote as a disclaimer in his introduction For someone who started his first journey outside his village boundaries with two hand-woven clothes, some exercise books, a branch of millets, and a pair of wooden sandals packed into a small Java (Kettesu), it has been a singular trip. In short, it is a spectacular political career spanning over six decades starting from the turbulence of the late 50s when he became the joint secretary of the Naga People’s Convention (NPC) to serving under three prime ministers- Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, and Indira Gandhi’s to five times as the Chief Minister to Governorship in three states. Detractors apart, born on October 17, 1931, Dr. Senayangba Chu-
basoshi Jamir or popularly known by his honorific SC Jamir is a survivor – literally and figuratively. His first brush with death occurred in 1947, when a severe bout of ‘measles’ epidemic in his native Ungma Village killed 47 people in three months, including two of his own siblings. Jamir survived. His other encounters with death occurred during his political career. He miraculously survived four “assassination” attempts during his lifetime. It is almost impossible to give a complete overview of the book, as the canvas is too broad- traversing international, national and state politics in some defining movements in history. However, for the benefit of the readers, Jamir’s own retelling of his life trajectories can be divided into three important sections – early life, national politics, and state politics.
sion and constructed the edifice on which my future stands.” Incidentally, a chance encounter with Nehru, “who avoided anything remotely connected with the government when he traveled as a Congress functionary,” at Anand Bhavan was also life-altering experience, he wrote. Into the national and international arena Jamir’s nomination as the first Member of Parliament during the erstwhile Interim Body before official Statehood of Nagaland in 1961 thrust him into the vortex of the political corridor of National politics at a pivotal moment. As a Parliamentary Secretary under Nehru and Shastri, as well as a Union Minister under Indira Gandhi and a member of Indian Delegation to United Nations in 1962, he was privy to various historical events having tremendous geopolitical ramifications during that period. Jamir, thus, gives an insider’s accounts on the unfolding historical events. The Chinese Aggression, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the rise of Indira as an undisputed Congress Leader to name a few are recounted with contextually replete lucid narratives and interesting anecdotes. Jamir tasted electoral defeat for the first time in 1971 for his third term as MP from Nagaland, which necessitated his departure from the national arena. But it opened doors for him to actively participate in the state politics by winning a by-election from Mongoya Assembly Constituency.
The Wonder years As a sweeping personal account, it starts with narratives about his schooling under pioneering educator Mayangnokcha to Scottish Church College, in Kolkata (Calcutta then) to Allahabad. Calcutta then had something for everyone and considered a paradise for the creative people, he reminisced while Allahabad was a melting pot of eastern and western ideas. Fusion with mainlanders also shaped his outlook and worldviews, and by the time he left Calcutta for Allahabad to pursue his Bachelor Degree, his determination to become a doctor (after the aforementioned measles outbreak) was eventually sacrificed for life in politics. Allahabad was chosen for two reasons: the city had one of the most The topsy-turvy world popular universities in India and it of State’s political arena A person who in all modesty was the birthplace of Nehru. “The University in nutshell shaped my vi- confesses his awe of the oratory
skills and convincing ability of legend ‘Phizo’; the conciliatory and optimistic approach of Dr. Imkongliba; and enchanting lectures of Dr. Longri, the narratives traverse from the onset of Naga Political Movement to intricacies and complexities of state politics filled with bigger challenges and dynamics. Jamir’s instinctive survival both in National and State political arena is intriguing, to say the least, as his action or otherwise, must be seen in the context of what the trajectories of Nagaland state and the Naga political movements have taken in recent years. In the political arena, the book discusses in details the formation of Nagaland State. Political vendetta, defection, party hopping, innerparty politics and infighting, tribal dynamic affects both state and nonstate entities, and not a single actor escape its encompassing rope. Consequently, Jamir’s first term as Chief Minister lasted for just 48 days (April 18, 1980-June 4, 1980). The narratives on state politics are replete with such events. While the Naga political history and his stand on the issue have been enunciated in his previous publications-, ‘Bedrock of Naga Society’ (co-authored) and ‘Naga People’s Convention and 16 Point Agreement’ as well as earlier writings, the narratives here are more leisurely and introspectively elaborate. In other words, unlike his other writings, often vented out due to immediate electoral and political compulsion, the present narrative is not burdened with the urgency of time, thus making it more insightful and retrospective. The book will be an added dimension for researchers in Naga political history, especially after India’s Independence. The book will also pique the interest of any layperson alike.
Due to non-linear storytelling, some readers may find it cumbersome to traverse back and forth especially in the narratives about his early political careers juxtaposing state and national politics with Naga political movement. However, with a minor effort, a clear picture emerges and it becomes more easy reading. A more thorough editing might also have corrected some factual misplacement. Jamir ingenuity lies in the fact that the biography comes as an ‘honest’ narratives clarifying many
doubts as well as making a clear position as to why he stands for what he is today. However, at times, readers may find his narrative ‘proselytizing,’ but if one objectively maneuver beyond that, it’s a compelling and illuminating read. “The boat of my life began charting its own course in the great political ocean, slowly but steadily and surely, with a single-minded determination at heart, that is, the welfare of the Naga people and then Nagaland.” Did Jamir fulfill his quest? Read the book to know.

s education minister Prakash Javadekar takes charge of a ministry that appeared to impede the Prime Minister’s desire to see world-class Indian universities, step one could be to get his ministry’s first-ever national ranking in order. The Ministry of Human Resource Development’s maiden ranking exercise for Indian universities, India Rankings 2016 – a guide for students – lacks three key criteria used in prestigious university ranking exercises globally, such as Times Higher Education World University Rankings, a list of the world’s best universities, compiled since 2004. The Indian ranking criteria, listed in the National Institutional Ranking Framework, lacks information on doctorates awarded, institutional income and global reputation of Indian universities, which, in general, fall short on faculty-student, male-female and international-local student ratios, according to an IndiaSpend analysis. The world’s best university, according to The Times’ rankings, is the California Institute of Technology, or Caltech. India’s best, the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, is ranked between 251 and 300 –universities are banded after the first 200 ranks – the only Indian highereducation institution in the top 300. China is the only BRICS (Brasil, Russia, India China and South Africa) economy with three universities in the Times’ top 100 universities list: Peking University, ranked 42, University of Hong Kong, ranked 44, and Tsinghua University, ranked 47. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants 10 public and private institutions to be world-class teaching and research institutions over the next five years, “to allow ordinary Indians access to affordable world-class degree courses”, but that is inadequate for a country where 33.3 million students were enrolled in 716 universities and 38,056 colleges, according to the 2014-15 All India Survey on Higher Education. What’s missing in India Rankings 2016 Doctorates awarded: India Rankings ignored the number of doctorates awarded – the doctorate-tobachelor’s ratio and the doctorates awarded-to-academic staff ratio – an important criteria to indicate “how committed an institution is to nurturing the next generation of academics” and “the provision of teaching at the highest level that is thus attractive to graduates and effective at developing them”, according to the Times Higher Education criteria. “The quality and quantity of doctorates in the country is very impor-

Nagaland Assembly's 15minutes of shame tant for India; doctorates drive the quality and level of research happening, which in turn, boosts innovation and economic growth,” said Furqan Qamar, secretary general, Association of Indian Universities. India had 20,425 enrolments in master’s programmes and 22,849 in doctoral programmes in 2013, making up 0.67% of all higher-education enrolments, when it should ideally be 5%, according to Qamar. Too few of these enrolments were in engineering/technology (5.9%), medicine/health sciences (2%) and agricultural sciences/ technology (2%), “disciplines that are typically associated with applied research and which therefore, go on to further technological advancement,” said Qamar. Most were in pure sciences (32%) and arts/social sciences/humanities (35%). Income: Income of any kind is absent from the India Rankings framework for universities. Times Higher Education considers institutional income, to provide “a broad sense of the infrastructure and facilities available to students and staff”; research income, “crucial to the development of world-class research”; and industry income to capture “the extent to which businesses are willing to pay for research and a university’s ability to attract funding in the commercial marketplace”. India Rankings evaluates learning resources by assessing the actual facilities, a surer measure in a country where colleges can exist only on paper. However, institutional income can additionally indicate available resources for faculty remuneration, which, in turn, determines quality of faculty and research. Assessing research income would show the “harsh reality” of research grants in India, said Rajan Saxena, vice chancellor, Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai. “Globally, governments are the biggest grant-makers for research, but in India, the government tends to discriminate between institutes of national importance and the pri-
vate sector,” said Saxena. “Research grants should be given wherever potential and talent exist.” Likewise, assessing industry income would show the disparity between Indian academic research aims and industry needs. “Most ongoing research in Indian universities is theoretical and incremental in nature whereas industry seeks research outcomes based on looking at issues in a fundamentally different way,” said Saxena. “In developed nations, industry looks to universities for new ideas for potential use in the future. Indian industry is more demanding; it looks for problem-specific research that ends in almost a prototype of the device or process, so that product development can quickly ensue,” said Bishnu P Pal, a professor at the School of Natural Sciences, Mahindra Ecole Centrale, the Mahindra group’s engineering college in Hyderabad. Most research in Indian universities is by doctoral students for their thesis, said Pal. Global reputation: A global reputation survey result makes up 50% of the Times survey’s teaching score and 60% of the research score. To evaluate institutional reputation, India Rankings engages with all sorts of stakeholders in India. This is not enough, said experts. Indian universities must get known for excellence overseas. Weak spots Three criteria figure in both India Rankings 2016 and the Times’ rankings, but these are also areas where Indian higher-education comes up short. Faculty-student ratio: India’s leading university, IISc in Bangalore, has a staff-to-student ratio comparable with the world’s best – 1:8.2 versus Caltech’s 1:6.9. However, Indian institutions lower down the order fared poorly. For instance, Delhi University, ranked sixth in India and in Times’ 601-800 rank band, had a faculty student ratio of 1:22.9.
“India’s average student-faculty ratio for higher educational institutions has been hovering at about 27, based on sanctioned faculty positions,” said Qamar. “On the basis of the occupied faculty positions, the ratio would nearly double.”To attract quality faculty and boost the ratio to an average of 10 in universities, India needs to invest more in higher education,” he said. Global students: International outlook is the Times’ composite measure of international-to-domesticstudent ratio, international-to-domestic-staff ratio and international collaboration (for research publications). Caltech scored 64 in this category, IISc 16.2. Caltech has 27% international students, against IISc’s 1%. “A large international footprint both in terms of students and faculty is important for a university because this brings in new ideas and different work culture from all over the world,” said Rajiv Dusane, dean, International Relations, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. “To facilitate this, we are engaging with the Indian Council of Cultural Relations and Indian embassies. We are trying to bring in more international faculty by way of visiting and adjunct faculty schemes.” Female-to-male student ratio: Caltech had 33% female students versus 19% in IISc. Although the enrolment of women in higher education rose from 38.6% to 46% between 2007 to 2014, according to the respective All India Surveys On Higher Education, fewer women sign up for engineering and technology courses – 29% at the undergraduate level and 37% at the postgraduate level. “A higher female-to-male student ratio in academic institutions like IITs is important because there is a need of highly-qualified female engineers in various sectors of technology and education,” said Dusane. IIT Bombay is seeing more women enrol for master’s and doctoral programmes, a trend also visible at the undergraduate level.
Kelhou E Chielie: I just logged in a while back and I came across a post in NOTD that this morning NLA session lasted for just about 15 minutes! That's right, 15 MINUTES! I am truly pained and angered by what our elected representatives are doing and see the way they're treating us. What kind of legislative session anywhere in the world lasts that short! There are so so many problems that they could have discussed about and yet they went to I don't know maybe have a cup of tea/coffee and went back home or just to create some nuisance traffic jam in Kohima town! The speeches that they have in places all over Nagaland are about some b***s**t development and so, but the only development I See is the 7,8 figure sums bank accounts that grows each year mostly during budget session! I maybe here to say all these just as a nobody (yet) but as a concerned citizen, I really am sick and tired of the way our beautiful state is run! I know that all the members in this group here are all well educated NAGAS and so I tell you this...when are we going to wake up! When are we going to let this stop! When are we going to say that enough is enough. Are you not sick and tired of this!? If this is the PRESENT scenario of our society, just imagine how worse the FUTURE could get!? Nokchem Phom: An assembly began today and the session proceeded only for 15minutes and then adjourned for a day. When there are many issues to discuss and address, our legislators seem not interested in debate. It's time for the present youth and upcoming leaders to learn from such action, when our state, our society and everything is in chaos, the elected representatives paying less attention to deal with the issue is just another way of ignorance. What shall we expect in 15minutes? Governor address might take 05-10minutes and then the remaining 5minutes for discussion? Ufffff.... our legislators are trying to introduce some new system of Assembly naki? If the assembly will really last for such limited minutes then there is no need making an arrangement even in traffic which in fact is causing lot of inconvenience to the public. They should learn that the assembly is a time to discuss, debate every small affairs of state. Though not new, after adjourning session in a hurry burry our CM seemed to rush to Dimapur but unfortunate for him that he had to be stuck in traffic jam due to landslide. Eying Humtsoe: Is the NLA trying to make a record of some sort!? How are Bills approved and related policies churned out without debate and discussion even within the party members? If they're intellectually so lethargic in the third year, I presume they'll be dead by the end of their term. Please acknowledge your incompetencies to occupy the legislative chairs and make way for leaders who have passion, credential and compatibility. Imsen Jamir: Come on PEOPLE let us demand our rights near the doors of all the members of the NLA and ask them whether to be a member of NLA is a responsibility or opportunity. If answered wrongly -REVOLUTION. Let us learn from history. Revolution always wins. Their assets will be for the people assets. No more Gandhian or Martin Luther Jr theories in Nagaland. Show human face, stop killings, have dialogue: Mirwaiz Srinagar, July 15 (ianS): Moderate separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq invokes former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to restore peace to the troubled Kashmir Valley. The head Muslim preacher of Jammu and Kashmir said there were "many factors", including the alleged RSS and BJP plans of enforcing demographic changes, that contributed to the current turmoil in the Kashmir Valley. The governments in both New Delhi and Srinagar, Mirwaiz told IANS in an interview, have "completely closed their eyes to the reality" in Kashmir. "There was a time when Vajpayee came to us. I remember when he came here, he came with a political package. He recognized (Kashmir) is a political problem. He said we have to address the issue with humanity. He said we have to shed the stated positions and look for new openings. We started engaging with him and the dialogue process started." The "saddest part today", the Mirwaiz said, "is that New Delhi is in a denial mode".
Kashmir government makes secret contact with separatists Srinagar, July 15 (ianS): Apprehensive that the ongoing violent unrest may prolong - as in 2008 and 2010, the Jammu and Kashmir government has quietly reached out to separatists, seeking their help to calm anger on the streets following the killing of a top Hizbul Mujahideen commander, informed sources said on Friday. However, none in the separatist leadership has agreed to engage with the government of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti amid the current volatile situation that has left 38 people dead and over 1,500 injured in the last one week, the sources told IANS. They said emissaries were sent to Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq - chairmen of the respective hardline and moderate factions of the divided separatist conglomerate Hurriyat Conference. The government also tried to establish contact with Yaseen "This government talks about the vision of Vajpayee. And the basic element of 'insaniyat' is quite visible on the ground with nearly 40 deaths, hundreds injured, pellets, small children in hospitals." He said Kashmir was
Four arrested with fake Army appointment letters Sagar (MP), July 15 (PTi): Four youths were arrested after they arrived here to join the Army carrying fake appointment letters, police said. A complaint in this regard was filed by Subedar Kaansingh Rajput of Mahar Regiment at the Cantonment Police Station here. The accused were identified as Mukesh Kumar (21), Mandeep Singh (20), both from Rajasthan, Ajay Rajput (20) and Lokesh Kumar, both from Haryana, police said. During the preliminary probe they told police that they had paid Rs five lakh each to a person who provided them with these "appointment papers", police station incharge B M Dwivedi said. They also revelead that four of their relatives had gone to Bengaluru and Pune and about a dozen others to Kamti cantonment in Nagpur to join the Army carrying similar "appointment letters", he said. While a case of cheating, forgery has been registered against them, police and the Army authorities are conducting further probe, Dwivedi said. The four accused were produced before the Judicial Magistrate Manish Sharma, who sent them in police custody for five days, he said.
Modi failed to craft a coherent policy on Pakistan: Congress new delhi, July 15 (ianS): The Congress on Friday condemned Pakistan's attempt to "internationalise the sensitive issue of Kashmir" and accused the Narendra Modi government of failing to craft a coherent policy towards the neighbouring country. "Pakistan's blatant attempt to internationalise the sensitive situation in Jammu and Kashmir, one where they have been an agent provocateur for over two decades, needs to be condemned in the strongest terms possible," Congress spokesman Manish Tewari told reporters here. He said Pakistan's stance "raises a question about the complete absence of not only a strategy, but even a tactical approach which the Modi government has regarding Pakistan". "It is absolutely a flagrant violation of the position that India has consistently taken, that all issues with Pakistan will be sorted bilaterally," Tewari said. Pakistan on Friday demanded a UN-backed independent and transparent probe into what it called the "extrajudicial" killings in Kashmir and termed the situation in the state a grave threat to peace and security. Tewari said the belligerence and impertinence which is emanating out of both the security and political establishment of Pakistan is to a large measure because the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Modi have failed to craft a coherent policy towards Pakistan. "When was the last time India heard a statement from the UN Secretary General on Kashmir? Throughout the 10 years of the UPA government, there was never an attempt to interfere," said Tewari. "When was the last time that you heard the US talk about resolving Kashmir through talks between India, Pakistan and Kashmiri people."
156 Indians evacuated from Sudan new delhi, July 15 (ianS): It was a moment of joy, relief and thanksgiving for the 71 Indian nationals who arrived at Palam technical area here on Friday morning from war-torn South Sudan. But even as they were thankful for their timely evacuation, many of them said they would like to return to the African country once the situation eases there as they had good opportunities to earn money. The evacuated nationals came in a C17 Globemaster plane of the Indian Air Force which landed here at 10.45 a.m. on Friday morning. Of the total 156 Indian nationals evacuated from South Sudan, 85 deplaned at Thiruvananthapuram airport while 71 landed at Palam. South Sudan President Salva Kiir on Monday evening ordered a ceasefire after days of heavy fighting between government troops and forces loyal to Vice President Riek Machar in Juba. The fighting has displaced tens of thousands of people from their homes. South Sudan declared independence from Sudan on July 9, 2011. Minister of State for External Affairs V.K. Singh led 'Operation Sankat Mochan' to evacuate Indians from South Sudan which has been hit by violence.
Malik -- head of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) - lodged in a Srinagar lockup. But, the sources said, none of them have agreed to ask people to calm down or call off their protests in the wake of civilian killings in firing by police and paramilitary forces. "They (separatists) have expressed their helplessness, saying they are not in control of what is going on in the valley," one of the sources told IANS. The separatist leaders, according to the source, have demanded from the government to lift curbs on them, remove curfew and allow them to hold protest marches before they "can issue appeals for peace". However, the government has not agreed, fearing that if protest marches were allowed at this juncture, the situation may spin out of control. On July 10, when the unrest was still building up, the govern-
"never a law and order issue, a problem of good or bad governance, of economic incentives, jobs" and separatist groups have been "trying to bring this point home that it is a political problem that needs a political solu-
ment's chief spokesperson and senior Cabinet minister Naeem Akhtar had publicly said that "we need the support of the Hurriyat Conference" to end the crisis. Geelani and the Mirwaiz both detained in their houses - have in separate interviews to IANS said they were not in control of the situation as the current wave of violent protests in the Kashmir Valley was "spontaneous and not sponsored". Some political experts, who spoke on condition of anonymity to IANS, said the hands-off approach of the separatist leaders indicated they have "no" or at the most "very little" sway over the situation right now. "It is sort of a leaderless mass of frustrated Kashmiri youth who are pitted not only against the State but also against themselves. They don't care about the physical losses they incur by throwing stones to attract live bullets," a university professor told IANS here.
tion". As step one, New Delhi should shun its "military approach" and address Kashmir with "a human face", he said. "But that is nowhere visible. The Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) doesn't
He said "these youth were enraged at the government and enthused by a false vigour of selfrighteousness (jihad) and they are rampaging on everything. "If anybody tries to sort of control them, they would turn against him or her. I don't think separatist leaders can afford that." But another political expert, who has in the past been in the separatist camp, said: "The antiIndia resistance leadership cannot afford to let the situation slip into absolute chaos. "We already have nearly 40 dead in six days. After sometime the martyrs become mere numbers. The situation has escalated to separatists' advantage. It has to and will de-escalate for sure. But then they (separatist) won't have the advantage to bargain. Therefore, I think it is time for them to engage with the government, secretly or otherwise, and try and take control of the situation on the streets."
even condemn civilian killings. He doesn't even have a word of sympathy for Kashmiris." The 43-year-old separatist leader - who heads his faction of the divided Hurriyat Conference - an amalgam of Kash-
miri separatist groups has been detained in his house since the current unrest, triggered by the July 8 killing of rebel commander Burhan Wani, 22. At least 38 people have been killed and hundreds injured in subsequent
street clashes. The Mirwaiz said Wani and the protests were a manifestation of years of anger among Kashmiri youth that remained unaddressed. "Many factors have contributed. The BJP-PDP coalition has been one of the sources of anger in Jammu and Kashmir. "At the end of the day this is a Muslim majority state and many people are disturbed by the fact there seems to be a deliberate attempt to undermine the majority status of Jammu and Kashmir. And the BJP and the RSS are not hiding their intentions on that." He denied Pakistan or even the Hurriyat Conference was stoking the trouble and called the street protests as "spontaneous, not sponsored". "Delhi is trying to blame everybody else except themselves. Sometimes Pakistan and sometimes Hurriyat. Hurriyat is nowhere in the scene. It is the people. It is the youth of Kashmir." He said the Indian government wasted six years after the 2010 Kashmir unrest by doing "nothing to resolve the issue" and instead
created further problems by pushing "Kashmiris to the wall". "Whether it is so-called Sainik (soldier) Colonies or separate townships for Panidts. There has been provocation from Delhi on every issue. It was a pressure cooker situation and it exploded." He said Kashmir needed "political space" and asked the state and central governments to understand "why the youth relate to this young man who got killed". "Every (Kashmiri) family has a story to tell, of tragedy, of pain, of suffering, and relate to Burhan. He never went to Pakistan. He left his career, his good family, and his comfortable home to challenge the might of India knowing well he won't succeed in countering the military might." Asked if the Hurriyat would talk to India if invited, the Mirwaiz said: "I personally believe there is always a strong constituency of dialogue in Kashmir to address the issues. But New Delhi has discredited that constituency. "First of all they have to show the human face. Stop this madness, stop these killings."
Will ensure justice for all: UP CM Akhilesh on Dadri lynching case luCknow, July 15 (ani): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Friday said the state government will welcome the court's verdict on the Dadri lynching case, but added that all efforts will be made to ensure justice for all. Yadav said that his government had earlier conducted a fair probe into the matter. "See, whatever will be the court's decision, the government will respect
it. The government earlier also conducted a fair probe. And we can assure you that as far as the court's verdict is concerned, the government will definitely agree with it and fully respect the same," Yadav told ANI. "But the government will also ensure that injustice is not meted out to anybody," he added. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister's remark came after a local court directed that an FIR be registered
against 50-year-old Mohammad Akhlaq and the six members of his family under laws related to cow slaughter and animal cruelty. Last year, Akhlaq was lynched by a mob in Uttar Pradesh's Bisara village for allegedly consuming beef. The police had earlier filed its report in the court stating that 'no FIR' on charges of cow slaughter and animal cruelty had been lodged against
Akhlaq's family. The petitioner had urged the court to direct the police to register an FIR against Akhlaq's family members on charges of cow slaughter and animal cruelty. The petition claims that two villagers from Bisada namely Ranvir and Jatan saw Akhlaq and his son Danish beat up a calf on September 29 last year. Akhlaq allegedly told them that since the calf
was attacking the people, he was going to tie up the animal at his brother Jaan Mohammed's house. The petition said another villager Prem Singh while passing by Akhlaq's house saw the latter holding the calf down while his brother Jaan Mohammad was slitting the animal's throat. According to the petitioner, Akhlaq was on the night of September 28 stopped near Bada trans-
former by some residents, while others reached his house and found a vessel with remains of some animal and meat. The petitioner claimed the mob got out of control and beat up Akhlaq and his son Danish. Akhlaq was beaten to death. The petitioner had also cited forensic report by the Mathura forensic lab, which said the meat samples was of an animal of the cow progeny.
Five injured as President's escort Government reaches out to car skids off road in Darjeeling opposition ahead of Parl session darJeeling, July 15 (ianS): President Pranab Mukherjee's motorcade was on Friday involved in an accident when one of the escort vehicles skidded off the road and fell into a gorge, injuring five people. The convoy was on its way to Bagdogra in northern West Bengal. Both Mukherjee and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, whose car was also part of the motorcade, are safe. The President is on a three-day visit to Darjeeling. The accident happened as the convoy was heading towards Bagdogra airport from Darjeeling, when the third car in the convoy skidded and fell
into a gorge, injuring five security personnel. "There is no reason to worry. Everybody is safe. The President is safe," said Banerjee, who herself supervised the rescue work. "The third car in Pranab Da's (Mukherjee) convoy slipped off and hurtled down a gorge. The accident happened due to heavy rain. The police and security men were very prompt in rescuing those who were inside the car," said Banerjee, whose vehicle was right behind the one that fell off. "The President has been waiting at a safe place in Kurseong. I have informed him that everything is okay here. He
is also safe," added Banerjee. Hailing the prompt rescue work, Banerjee also announced that the state government will "reward those involved in the rescue work". The five injured were moved to the North Bengal Medical College, while the President's convoy resumed its journey for the airport later. "Car in President's carcade from Darjeeling to Bagdogra goes off road, minor injuries to security personnel," Rashtrapati Bhavan said in tweets. "Unfortunate accident involving escort vehicle in convoy enroute to Bagdogra. Everybody is well by grace of God," it added.
new delhi, July 15 (PTi): Intensifying Government's efforts to bring the opposition around on the crucial GST bill ahead of the Monsoon session of Parliament, Union Ministers Arun Jaitley and Ananth Kumar today met Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma to help break the impasse on it. During the meeting, that lasted about 45 minutes, the two sides put forth their points of view and after discussing the issue with their respective parties, decided to meet again once the Monsoon session starts on July 18. Asked if the meeting was positive and if the issues have been resolved, both sides were non-committal and
said only preliminary discussions were held today. They also did not comment on whether the bill will see its passage or not. "We are trying to build consensus on GST. We have discussed all the points. Once the session starts, we will meet again after discussing the issue within our respective parties," Jaitley said after the meeting, which was held in Azad's room in Parliament. Azad, who is leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, said this was a preliminary meeting where the two sides presented their points of view and will meet again after discussions with the respective leaderships of government and Congress.
Holy Cow: Bovines become a pampered lot in BJP-ruled Haryana Chandigarh, July 15 (ianS): It's perhaps the best of times for cows in Haryana, thanks to the BJP government of Manohar Lal Khattar which is doing everything to pamper the bovine species, often at the expense of humans. From setting up of creche for cows to sterilising and rounding up stray bulls, setting up an e-portal for livestock, setting up 'gaushalas', announcing a cattle insurance scheme and even appointing a senior police officer to exclusively monitor smuggling of cows in the state, the government in Haryana is sparing no efforts. During a special drive launched by the state government last month (June 1 to 15), over 22,000 stray bulls were sterilised against a target of 20,000. Haryana's Animal Husbandry and Dairy minister O.P. Dhankar does not want any let-up in the drive. Dhankar has already directed officers of the department to set up cattle creches in all villages in the state by November 1, the

date when Haryana celebrates the golden jubilee of its creation. The BJP government, headed by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar -- a former Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activist --, is already scouting for land in various districts to set up cow sanctuaries and
cow shelters. At least five cow sanctuaries (gau abhyaranyas) are planned for Hisar, Bhiwani, Panipat, Sirsa and Yamunanagar districts, said Bhani Ram Mangla of Haryana Gau Sewa Aayog. These will be replicated in all other districts later. Each sanctuary will be spread in
50 to 200 acres area. Three teams have been constituted for the protection of cows, which include legislators and officers of municipal corporations, district administration and the police. "Under the Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakshan and Gausamvardhan Act 2015,
cow slaughter would be punishable with rigorous punishment of between three and 10 years, and a fine of up to Rs 100,000. In case of default in payment of fine, additional imprisonment of up to one year may be imposed," Mangla said. To curb cow smuggling in the state, the Khattar government has appointed Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Bharti Arora as head of a special wing of the Haryana Police. Her team includes over 300 police officials. A toll-free number has also been launched for this purpose. A 'Gau-Rakshak Task Force' has also been proposed. The Khattar government, which had earlier imposed a ban on beef in the state, has amended existing laws to make them tough. Any person attempting to export cows for slaughter would be imprisoned for not less than three years and up to seven years. Fine ranging from Rs 30,000 to Rs 70,000 would also be imposed. To encourage rearing of
cows, the Khattar government has announced incentives. "The state government is providing a subsidy of up to 50% to those rearing five cows and up to 25% to those rearing more than five cows," Mangla said. As per Haryana government statistics, there are about 117,000 stray cows in the state. Stray livestock is being rounded up across Haryana to put them in cow shelters. The state government is developing an 'e-pashuhaat' web portal to highlight the information about Haryana cows. A 'Gaushala' will soon be constructed at Motilal Nehru School of Sports in Rai (near Sonipat) "to provide nutritious diet of pure milk of cow, desi ghee, yogurt and butter to students studying there". Mangla said that a scheme is also being prepared to make the Gaushalas self-reliant by producing bio-gas based electricity and making organic manure and phenyl from cow urine.

Truck attacker ploughs into crowd, kills 84 NICE, July 15 (REutERs): An attacker at the wheel of a heavy truck ploughed into crowds celebrating Bastille Day in the French city of Nice, killing at least 84 people and injuring scores more in what President Francois Hollande called a terrorist act. The driver, identified by a police source as a 31-year-old Tunisian-born Frenchman, also appeared to open fire before officers shot him dead. The man was not on the watch list of French intelligence services, but was known to the police in connection with common crimes such as theft and violence, the source said. Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said 18 people were in a critical condition after the attack on Thursday night, when the white truck zigzagged along the seafront Promenade des Anglais as a fireworks display marking the French national day ended just after 10:30 p.m. (2030 GMT). According to one city official, the truck careered on for up to two km (1.5 miles). Several children were among the dead. “People went down like ninepins,” Jacques, who runs Le Queenie restaurant on the seafront, told France Info radio. The attack seemed so far to be the work of a lone assailant. Hollande said in a predawn address that he was calling up military and police reservists to relieve forces worn out by enforcing a state of emergency begun in November after

Islamic State gunmen and suicide bombers struck Paris entertainment spots on a Friday evening, killing 130 people. Only hours earlier he had announced the emergency would be lifted by the end of July. Following the attack, he said it would be extended by a further three months. “France is filled with sadness by this new tragedy,” Hollande said. “There’s no denying the terrorist nature of this attack.” Major events in France have been guarded by troops and armed police since the Nov. 13 attacks.
But it appeared to have taken many minutes to halt the progress of the truck as it tore along pavements and a pedestrian zone. One witness said she thought the attacker was firing a gun as he drove. “I saw this enormous white truck go past at top speed,” said Suzy Wargniez, a local woman aged 65 who was watching from a cafe on the promenade. “It was shooting, shooting.” A local government official said weapons and grenades were later found inside the rented vehicle. Nice-Matin newspaper said on Twitter that po-
lice were searching the attacker’s home in the Nice neighbourhood of Abattoirs. It gave no source of the information. ISLAMIC STATE TARGETS FRANCE After the Paris attacks, Islamic State said France and all nations following its path would remain at the top of its list of targets as long as they continued “their crusader campaign”, referring to action against the group in Iraq and Syria. France is conducting air strikes and special forces operations against Islamic State, as well as train-
ing Iraqi government and Kurdish forces. “We will further strengthen our actions in Syria and Iraq,” Hollande said, calling the tragedy on the day that France marks the 1789 revolutionary storming of the Bastille prison in Paris an attack on liberty by fanatics who despised human rights. Dawn broke on Friday with pavements smeared with dried blood. Smashed children’s strollers, an uneaten baguette and other debris were strewn about the promenade. Small areas were screened off and what appeared to be bodies
covered in blankets were visible through the gaps. The truck was still where it came to rest, its windscreen riddled with bullets. There had been no claim of responsibility on Friday morning. The truck careered into families and friends listening to an orchestra or strolling above the beach on the Mediterranean Sea towards the grand, centuryold Hotel Negresco. Bystander Franck Sidoli said he had seen people go down. “Then the truck stopped, we were just five metres away. A woman was there, she lost her son. Her son was on the ground, bleeding,” he told Reuters at the scene. Police told residents of the city to stay indoors as they conducted further operations. Officials in Italy, just 30 km (20 miles) away, said frontier controls were being stepped up. The Paris attack in November was the bloodiest among a number in France and Belgium in the past two years. On Sunday, a weary nation had breathed a sigh of relief that the monthlong Euro 2016 soccer tournament had ended without incident. Four months ago, Belgian Islamists linked to the Paris attackers killed 32 people in Brussels. Vehicle attacks have been used by isolated members of militant groups in recent years, notably in Israel, though never to such devastating effect. Riders on the Tour de France, the top event on the
international cycling calendar, observed a minute’s silence before Thursday’s 13th stage began. Security has been tightened for the three-week event, which is watched by huge crowds lining the route. U.S. President Barack Obama condemned what he said “appears to be a horrific terrorist attack”. Others joining him included German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Pope Francis, Spain, Sweden, NATO and the United Nations Security Council. Turkey, where Islamic State and Kurdish militants have staged a number of attacks in recent months, offered its condolences. “For terrorist groups, there is no difference between Turkey and France, Iraq and Belgium, and Saudi Arabia and the United States,” said President Tayyip Erdogan. On social media, Islamic State supporters celebrated the high death toll. In 2014 an Islamic State spokesman released an audio recording encouraging “lone wolf” attacks, calling on supporters to kill “any infidel, French, American, or any of their allies”. HIDING IN TERROR One woman told France Info that she and others had fled in terror: “The lorry came zig-zagging along the street. We ran into a hotel and hid in the toilets with lots of people.” Nice-Matin journalist Damien Allemand had been watching the firework display when the truck tore by. After taking cover in a cafe, he wrote on his pa-
per’s website of what he saw when he came back out on the promenade: “Bodies every five metres, limbs ... Blood. Groans.” “The beach attendants were first on the scene. They brought water for the injured and towels, which they placed on those for whom there was no more hope.” Officials have warned of the continuing risk of Islamist attacks in the region. Reverses for Islamic State in Syria and Iraq have raised fears it might strike again, again using alienated young men from the continent’s Arab immigrant communities whom it has inspired to take up arms against their home countries. Nice, a city of 350,000, has a history as a flamboyant, aristocratic resort but is also a gritty metropolis. It has seen dozens of its Muslim residents travel to Syria to fight, a path taken by previous Islamic State attackers in Europe. At Nice’s Pasteur hospital, medical staff were treating large numbers of injuries. Waiting for friends who were being operated on, 20-year-old Fanny told Reuters she had been lucky. “We were all very happy, ready to celebrate all night long,” she said. “I saw a truck driving into the pedestrian area, going very fast and zig-zagging. “The truck pushed me to the side. When I opened my eyes I saw faces I didn’t know and started asking for help ... Some of my friends were not so lucky. They are having operations as we speak. It’s very hard, it’s all very traumatic.”
Myanmar moves to Red meat consumption China to prosecute prominent human curb religious extremism may up kidney failure risk rights lawyer on subversion charges yANGON, July 15 (REutERs): Myanmar is cracking down on Buddhist extremism, aiming to curb ethnic and religious tension that saw two mosques destroyed and scores of Muslim residents fleeing their villages in recent weeks. Nobel Peace Prize winner and government leader Aung San Suu Kyi has come under criticism from human rights activists and lawyers for not cracking down on the perpetrators of the attacks aimed at the Muslim minority. In an apparent response to the criticism, the government has made a surprisingly decisive move against an organization of radical nationalist monks, known as the Ma Ba Tha, threatening legal action if it spread hate speech and incites violence. On Friday, the government launched a taskforce to prevent violent protests as part of a broader push to stop religious violence. Religious tension simmered in Buddhist-majority Myanmar for almost half a century of military rule, before boiling over in 2012 in the west of the country into clashes between Rohingya Muslims and ethnic Rakhine Buddhists. Violence between Muslims and Buddhists in other areas followed in 2013 and
2014. President Htin Kyaw said in a statement the taskforce would not only move against violent protesters, but also investigate and hold accountable anyone inciting violence. “We do not want to disturb peaceful protests, but we do not allow violence while protesting,” said Zaw Htay, spokesman of the State Councillor’s Office occupied by Suu Kyi. A government-appointed body that oversees Myanmar’s Buddhist monkhood, the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee, issued a statement this week saying it had never endorsed the nationalist and anti-Muslim Ma Ba Tha. In June, a group of 200 villagers destroyed a mosque and injured a Muslim man in central Myanmar after a dispute over the construction of a Muslim school. In a separate incident in northern Myanmar in early July, nearly 500 Buddhists burned down a Muslim prayer hall. Police arrested five people in connection with the attack, media said. In both incidents, Muslim residents fled from their homes fearing more widespread violence. Some 125,000 Rohingya Muslims displaced by the 2012 violence remain in camps in the west.
sINGApORE, July 15 (IANs): Love to binge on red meat such as bacon, sausage, beef or pork? Be careful, an excess intake of red meat may increase the risk of kidney failure, warns a study and adds that consuming plant-based sources of protein may significantly reduce this risk. Increasing number of people are developing chronic kidney disease (CKD), and many progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD), which requires dialysis or a kidney transplant. The findings showed that people who consumed the highest quantity of red meat had a 40% increased risk of developing ESRD compared to people consuming the lowest amount. On the other hand, substituting one serving of red meat with other sources of protein like eggs, dairy products, soy, and legumes reduced the risk of ESRD by up to 62%. “Our findings suggest that people who want to continue eating meat may opt for fish or shellfish and poultry which are better alternatives to red meat,” said lead author Woon-Puay Koh, Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore. However, no association was found with intakes of poultry, fish, eggs, or dairy products, while soy and legumes appeared to be slightly protective. “Individuals with CKD and other kidneyrelated problems can still maintain protein intake but should consider switching to plant-based sources,” Koh added. Restricting dietary protein intake to help manage CKD and slow progression to ESRD, the researchers suggested in the work appearing in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN). For the study, the team followed 63,257 Chinese adults in Singapore -- from the Singapore Chinese Health Study, for more than 15 years. This is a population where 97% of red meat intake consisted of pork, the researchers said.
BEIJING, July 15 (REutERs): China will prosecute a prominent Chinese human rights lawyer on charges of subverting state power after months of secret detention, prosecutors said on Friday, the latest move by authorities to crack down on dissent. President Xi Jinping’s administration has tightened control over almost every aspect of civil society since 2012, citing the need to buttress national security and stability. China consistently rejects any criticism of its human rights record, saying it adheres to the rule of law, that all are equal under the law and that those who break the law can expect to be punished. Dozens of lawyers and activists associated with the Beijing Fengrui law firm have been swept up in the crackdown and held since last July, triggering concern in Western capitals. The firm has represented several highprofile clients, including the ethnic Uighur dissident, Ilham Tohti. State media has accused the firm and its associates of orchestrating protests outside courts and politicizing ordinary legal cases in order to attract in-
ternational attention. Zhou Shifeng, the firm’s director, will be prosecuted on charges of subverting state power, the prosecutor in the northern city of Tianjin said in a brief statement on its official microblog, without giving details. An official reached by telephone at the prosecutor’s office declined further comment. It was not clear who Zhou’s own lawyer currently is. Shang Baojun, another well-known rights lawyer, told Reuters that Zhou’s previous legal team had all been replaced by government-appointed lawyers. “To be honest, we don’t know anything more about his case than you do,” Shang said, adding that a court date could still be two months off, according to Chinese law. The prosecutor said in the same statement that three other rights activists - Hu Shigen, Cui Yanmin and Gou Hongguo - would also be prosecuted on the same charges. It was also not possible to immediately locate lawyers for them for comment. In severe cases, the charges can result in life sentences.
As NKorea pursues the bomb, its military wanes sEOul, July 15 (REutERs): Like many in North Korea’s army of 1.2 million, Eom Yeong-nam spent more time holding the wooden handle of a shovel than a Kalashnikov rifle during his years in the 501 Construction Brigade. “Except for basic military training two to three months a year, we worked on building apartments or concrete structures for nine to ten months,” said Eom, who served 10 years in the army before defecting to the South in 2010, a year before Kim Jong Un assumed power in isolated North Korea. The young leader has since expanded the use of so-called “soldier-builders”, fuelling a construction boom as many of North Korea’s Soviet-era conventional weapons become outmoded. His military focus is increasingly on “asymmetric” capabilities such as nuclear weapons, ballistic missiles and cyberwarfare to deter North Korea’s main enemies, the United States and South Korea. Tensions with both have been on the rise since the start of the year. North Korea, under tightened United Nations sanctions follow-
ing its fourth nuclear test in January and a space rocket launch the following month, said on Monday it will make a “physical response” to moves by the United States and South Korea to deploy an advanced missile defence system on the Korean peninsula. North Korea also said on Monday it was cutting off its only channel of communications with the United States following a U.S. decision to sanction Kim Jong Un by name for human rights abuses and base the THAAD anti-missile system in South Korea. The focus on the asymmetric capabilities has been accompanied by a downscaling of the importance of the military within North Korea’s power structure. Slowly, Kim is dismantling the “military first” policy of his late father, Kim Jong Il, and giving precedence to the ruling Workers Party. This was evident most recently when the National Defence Commission, a military body promoted by Kim’s father as one of the highest decisionmaking institutions in government, was replaced last month by the civilian-heavy State Affairs Commission. “The KPA (Korean People’s
Army) is undergoing actual modernisation. Kim Jong Un is cutting through some of the fiefdoms and patronage networks that had grown too powerful,” said Michael Madden, an expert on the North Korean leadership. After coming to power, one of the first of Kim’s purges was the 2012 removal of Ri Yong Ho, the KPA’s then Chief of Staff. Since then, he has chipped away at the standing of senior military officers, in public. In 2014, Kim made his admirals take part in a swimming competition on the beaches of his summer palace while he watched, according to state media. That summer, his air force commanders were made to fly fighter jets as part of a military flying competition, and he instructed his generals to take part in a target shooting competition, state media said. MILLION MAN ARMY? While North Korea is often credited with having a “million-man army”, many are not combat-ready troops and are instead conscripted for up to 10 years at a time, largely as an easily-mobilised source of labour. There are about 300,000
combat-ready troops, most of them poorly-equipped and concentrated in the area near the inter-Korean Demlitiarised Zone (DMZ), General Vincent Brooks, commander of U.S. Forces Korea, told the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee earlier this year. North Korea has 73 submarines, more than China and far more than the South’s 23. Pyongyang’s submarines, although ageing Soviet models, are a key part of Kim Jong Un’s strategy to mount a nuclear warhead on a submarinelaunched ballistic missile. North Korea also has 21,100 artillery guns, mostly old Sovietdesigned weapons, according to the IISS Military Balance, twice as many as South Korea and almost 8,000 more than China. By comparison, South Korea has 628,000 active soldiers, most of whom are also conscripts, and 4.5 million reservists. North Korea has 5.7 million reservists, according to the IISS Military Balance 2016, most of whom are part of the underequipped, para-military Worker-Peasant Red Guard. The military’s other antique equipment includes the Antonov An-2, a large Soviet

transport plane built in the 1940s, used elsewhere as a crop duster, but capable of flying at slow speeds under radar. The rest of its air force recently had its planes repainted, according to images released by state media, a move which “only disguises the underlying lack of new airframes over the past two decades,” according to the Military Balance, a compilation of global military statis-
tics from the International Institute of Strategic Studies. Still, Kim’s army has spent scarce resources to renovate cracked runways at its air bases, invest in island defence units across North Korea’s rocky coast, and introduce new tank-training areas, according to satellite imagery analysis by Curtis Melvin at Johns Hopkins University in Washington. The KPA “lacks the logistical
support necessary to sustain a large scale attack,” Brooks told the Senate. Instead, the North is believed to have amassed enough plutonium for as many as 21 nuclear weapons, according to the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security, and has been accelerating testing of various types of ballistic missiles, all in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolutions.

us women look to win 6th consecutive Vijender faces tough olympics basketball gold medal battle in maiden title bout Doug Feinberg

No team has been more dominant at the Olympics over the past 20 years then the U.S. women's basketball team, winning five straight gold medals. They'll try and keep that streak going in Rio. “Training time is always our biggest challenge,” said three-time gold medalist Sue Bird. “When you get to the medal rounds it's one and done, but we have a lot of experience in those games and look to continue our recent success.” The Americans have won 41 consecutive Olympic contests dating back to the bronze medal game in 1992, winning by an average of nearly 30 points a game. With nine players, including Bird, Diana Taurasi and Tamika Catchings, returning from the London Games, the U.S. is a heavy favorite to win another gold medal. Olympic newcomers Elena Delle Donne, Brittney Griner and Breanna Stewart will add a dynamic mix to the veteran core. The only potential thorn for the U.S. is lack of training time. While
most other countries get to spend months together preparing, the U.S. will get about two weeks before its first game. “I'm hoping that they remember some of the stuff that we did last year at the World Championship and a couple years ago at the Olympics and maybe February at that little training camp that we had,” U.S. coach Geno Auriemma said. “Fortunately, they're a lot of the same players that played. So we haven't changed a whole lot. But there's not much time and there's not much that you can do to get ready. You just have to trust that they're ... They never let you down. They always seem to respond when you need them to.” The U.S. is in a difficult group with Serbia, China, Canada, Spain and Senegal. “Obviously we're in a tough group,” Auriemma added. “Because anytime you have the European champions like Serbia already in the group and Canada, the Americas champion, those are two really good teams. And then you add in China and Spain.” Here are a few other things to watch for in women's basketball at
the Olympics: A LITTLE REVENGE The U.S. is also out for a little bit of revenge. The last time they played in Brazil at the 2006 World Championship, they lost to Russia in the semifinals. It was their only defeat in either the Olympics or worlds since 1992. “I hadn't thought about that until you brought it up,” Bird said laughing. “The fans down there definitely know their basketball and like rooting against us. As the deficit against Russia grew, the cheers started getting louder for them.” MEDAL CONTENDERS While the gold medal is most likely a foregone conclusion, the other two spots on the podium are up for grabs. France was the silver medalists in 2012 and Australia has won either a silver or bronze at every Olympics since 1996. Other candidates for a medal could be Serbia, which won the European championship, and Canada. SCHEDULE CHANGE This year there will be a change in the competition structure. With the men and women playing in different arenas until the quarterfinal rounds, teams can play on consec-
Working on my half smashes to get closer to my goal: saina
New Delhi, July 15 (PTi): Bolstered by Australian Open triumph, India ace shuttler Saina Nehwal says she is now working on her half smashes under the watchful eyes of coach Vimal Kumar to get closer to the goal of winning a gold medal at next month's Rio Olympics. "The victory in Australia came at just the right time. I was really looking forward for some change and nothing boosts confidence like winning. I needed a win to keep believing that I am on the right track," the 26-year-old told PTI. "I am working hard on my half smashes to get closer to my goals. It is wonderful to win Australian Open prior to the Olympics. It is very satisfying to beat two world champions and a junior world champion in one tournament," added the girl from Hyderabad who clinched the Australian title last month. Set to play in her third Olympics, Saina said she is completely fit and the key will be to "reach the peak" in that particular week. "I take each tournament as it comes. Rio Olympics will also be like any other games. My approach to the game is very positive and I would like to keep it like that and focus on my game. I feel that on the day that I am 100 percent fit, I have the potential to defeat anyone,"
Saina Nehwal
said the London Olympics bronze medallist. "I feel I am fit. I am running nicely. At the end of the day, it's important that you reach the peak and play your best during that particular week. That's what will count ultimately and will be the key." It has been a year and a half that Saina has been training under Vimal Kumar in Bangalore and she said the former national coach was the one who made her believe that she can be a champion. "Vimal Sir's influence is the biggest change. I really want to
thank him for making me believe every day that I am a champion, I can be number one. Vimal Sir is helping me work on my half smashes and get closer to my goals," said Saina, who had reached the World No. 1 under Vimal's guidance last year. "It's not easy to play at the highest level. I would like to give my best and like all the players my goal is also to come back with a gold medal. It's a big contingent going from India this time, so we hope to have a triumphant return with lots of medals.

hristians come from different family background and culture, have the different problems in the natural, psychological and spiritual areas. We have read about those people as the epitome of the righteousness and if we could live the way those saints did, then our life will be pleasing to the Lord. Yet, as much as we all believe these truths, we often fail to live them out in our daily lives. They have not become a reality to us in the ways that God has intended. Multitudes of regular church goers do not have Shalom. Like to people of Israel many believers have experiences only short seasons of peace between their lengthy periods of distress. That is why, many believers rush all over the world looking for signs, miracles and deliverance. But nobody truly gets to know the Lord that way. People who claim to be Christian must believe that the Christians hope, grounded in the Jewish prophetic tradition is that one day there will be a new or renewed creation that represents the complete victory of God over evil and all of its expressions. Therefore, the biblical writers wrote a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness (2 Peter 3:10-13) .It’s a new powerful image to reflect the reality of God’s ultimate establishment of His kingdom. False teachers had entered the church and were leading astray some of the believers. The scoffers had said that nothing would change and Christ would not return. They pointed to the long delay and the
fact that all things were continuing as they had been since their fathers ‘fell asleep’, (2 Peter 3:4). To this situation, Peter affirmed that the Christ would return and the creation that seemed so solid and unchangeable actually would be destroyed completely. The kingdom of God will be established finally and fully with the return of Christ. That is, the new heaven and the new earth refer to a complete break with the past. “The heaven will disappear with a roar… everything will be laid bare… the destruction of heaven by fire… we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth” (2 Peter 3:10-13). The promise of new heavens and the new earth becomes an exhortation to righteous living in this creation. The gospel is not to be viewed as moral license but as a call to ethical dignity. Casual Christian have no vision of a holy God, so they have no motivation for destroying their sinful habits. Therefore, you may be tempted to look another person as being more spiritual than you. But that person could be struggling hard to keep up an appearance of righteousness. This leads directly to the kind of tragic end and everyone does what is right in their own eyes. As such, the vanquishing of evil requires a remaking of the old order so that it can become new and worthy environment for God and the redeemed. Since, godliness and holiness belong to the new order, those who will participate in that new order exhibit these qualifications now. Keduovilie Linyü
utive days. The U.S. doesn't begin play until Sunday, Aug. 7 against Senegal. The Americans then play the next day against Spain. There will only be three or four games per day now instead of the six there used to be. It's the first time this format is being used since the 1984 Olympic in Los Angeles. GOLDEN GIRLS If the U.S. does win another gold, Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird and Tamika Catchings will join Teresa Edwards and Lisa Leslie as the only basketball players to win four gold medals. SLAM DUNK Australia center Liz Cambage became the first woman to dunk in the Olympics in London. Will the 6-foot-8 star have an encore in Brazil? Keep an eye on Brittney Griner, the odds are the 6-8 American will add her name to the list. IMPRESSIVE STREAKS Only two other traditional team sports have longer consecutive gold medal streaks than the U.S. women's team. The American men's basketball team won seven consecutive golds from 1936-68. The India men's field hockey team won six in a row from 1928-56.
England to begin test series at new venue Rajkot New Delhi, July 15 (reuTerS): England will embark on their lengthy tour of India later this year with Rajkot hosting the first of the five test matches from Nov. 9, the cricket boards announced on Friday. Mohali, Mumbai and Chennai will host the remaining matches of what would be England's first five-test rubber in India since 1984-85. Beginning on Jan. 15, England will also play three one-dayers and as many Twenty20 Internationals. "This promises to be a historic test series... and a great opportunity for Alastair Cook and his players to repeat the memorable test series win we enjoyed on our last trip to India in 2012," Andrew Strauss, Director England Cricket, said in a statement. "Equally, Eoin Morgan's white-ball squad will be anticipating hard-fought and competitive encounters against high quality opposition in both formats..." he added. New Delhi, July 15 (iANS): Having made an excellent entry into the professional arena, star boxer Vijender Singh is expected to face the toughest test of his fledgling career when he takes on the experienced Kerry Hope of Australia for the WBO Asia Pacific super middleweight championship title here on Saturday. The Beijing Olympics bronze medallist has won all his six fights so far, but Hope has more experience and is a better calibre fighter than Vijender's previous opponents. The 34-year-old has been a professional boxer for 12 years and has been involved in 30 fights overs that period with a record of 23-7. That, along with the fact that he is a left-hander -- a distinct advantage in most sports -- makes the Australian of Welsh origin a dangerous opponent. Incidentally, one of the biggest defeats of Vijender's amateur career was against the left-handed Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan in the quarter-finals of the 2012 London Olympics. Hailing from Merthyr Tydfil, a town in Wales, Hope has an impressive record. He won his first 11 bouts and has the experience of winning titles in the past. He defeated American pugilist Caleb Truax in 2009 to win the World Boxing Federation super middleweight title. He also defeated the higher rated Grzegorz Proksa twice to win the
European Boxing Union middleweight title in 2012. He also won the World Boxing Council Asian Boxing Council middleweight title last year, defeating Poomrase Yoohanngoh. The Australian will however be wary of Vijender's power as the Bhiwani lad has the ability to unsettle opponents with the weight of his punches. The Indian, a former middleweight World No.1 in the amateur ranks, also enjoys the height advantage. If his opponent's pedigree worries Vijender, he was not showing it on the eve of the fight. Asserting that Saturday's fight will be a decisive one for Indian boxing, the former Commonwealth Games champion asserted that he was looking forward to win in front of his home crowd. "This fight will surely decide the future of proboxing in the country. It is a step ahead and I am very hopeful that there will be many more such fights in the future. I hope we succeed in this new endeavour," Vijender told reporters in the pre-bout press conference here on Friday. With just 24 hours to go before the bout, the mind games have already started as Hope challenged Singh, saying "He doesn't look like he is training as hard as I am." In return Vijender retaliated, "I will show him (Hope) tomorrow how much I have been training. It will be a great fight night."
"This time its going to be a little difficult, but I will make it happen, I have been training very hard and I am pretty confident of my win against Hope. This could be my seventh knockout and what better way to celebrate than to play in your own country." Vijender, who last played at home during the Commonwealth Games in 2010 said he is very excited to be boxing in front of his home crowd. He also cracked a joke at Delhi's old habit of asking for free passes and urged people to buy tickets for the bout. "Its been a long long time since the CWG, I feel really very excited to be back home and box in front of my home crowd. Its difficult to express the kind of enthusiasm and excitement...its going to be a great night," he said. Saturday's winner will get an entry into the top 15 and the duo can't wait to outpunch each other. Vijender feels that the real test will begin after being in the top 15 to which Hope replied, "He will have to wait for a long time for that." Commenting on the hot weather conditions in the city, Haryana-born Vijender, who spent almost an year training in Manchester, said he feels at home in Delhi. "Its hot in Delhi, but we are used to the heat here. I trained almost an year in Manchester, it was like a vacation in England but its home conditions for me".
'El Clasico' set for December
MADriD, July 15 (reuTerS): Spanish soccer's 'El Clasico' encounters between Barcelona and Real Madrid will happen in December and April, two of the most anticipated games of the 2016-17 Primera Division season whose fixtures were announced on Friday. Defending champions Barca host Real on Dec. 4 at the Camp Nou. The reverse fixture will take place on April 23, at the Bernabeu stadium, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed after the draw. As the La Liga season kicks off, Barca will begin their title defence at home to Real Betis on Aug. 21. Prior to that, the Cata-
lan giants take on Sevilla in the two-legged final of the Spanish Super Cup. That trophy pits the league champions against the King's Cup winners, or in this case the runners-up, since Barca won that title, too. The opening leg will be played on Aug. 14 at the Sanchez Pizjuan stadium while the return match will happen three days later in Barcelona. League runners-up Real Madrid kick off their campaign, in what will be Zinedine Zidane's first full season in charge, away to Real Sociedad. Deportivo Alaves will mark their return to Spain's top flight after a 10-year ab-
sence with a clash against Atletico Madrid at the Calderon stadium. Atletico visit Barcelona in round five, on Sept. 21, and Barca will travel to the Calderon stadium on Feb. 26. The first Madrid derby will take place on Nov. 20 at Atletico while Real will host their city rivals on April 9. CD Leganes , runnersup to Deportivo Alaves in the Segunda Division, will play their first ever La Liga game at Celta Vigo on Aug. 21 while Osasuna, the last team to be promoted, visit Malaga in the opening weekend. The last round of La Liga games will be on May 21, 2016.

……..... is robbing us of our health and crippling our economy!
T
he... patient should be made to understand that he or she must take charge of his own life. Don't take your body to the doctor as if he were a repair shop. ~Quentin Regestein Nagas health’s are at greater risk. The condition continues to be a growing concern owing to the increasingly sedentary lifestyle and high-calorie diets of our people. Sugar, sugar…everywhere ! The intake of sugar is ever increasing The carbonated drinks are so popular among the children, and so more increasing with the youth as a trend influenced by the television advertisement. One interesting observation is the slow demise of the 300 ml can—it being replaced by the 750 ml and 1.75 litre plastic bottles. The larger bottle may represent better value for money, but is less likely to represent better health value, since a resealable bottle is more likely to be sipped over hours than a can once opened. We can see how our society is forever changing and food is now at the centre of how we relate and connect with each other. Cake culture is being practiced so much recently. With every occasion the bakery is loaded with orders and home orders are more. Having cake at home and work, to celebrate Childs’ or colleagues' birthdays, engagements or just surviving the week is a danger to
health. Weddings and every occasion is so sugary! Here’s the Health problem you are unaware: A rigorously done new study shows that those with the highest sugar intake had a four-fold increase in their risk of heart attacks compared to those with the lowest intakes. That's 400 percent! Just one 20-ounce (little more than half a litre) soda increases your risk of a heart attack by about 30 percent. Much of the sugars consumed today are “hidden” in processed foods that are not usually seen as sweets. For example, 1 tablespoon of ketchup contains around 4 grams (around 1 teaspoon) of free sugars. A single can of sugar-sweetened soda contains up to 40 grams (around 10 teaspoons) of free sugars. This is a major paradigm shift. For years, we've been brainwashed into thinking that fat causes heart attacks and raises cholesterol, and that sugar is harmless except as a source of empty calories. They are not empty calories. As it turns out, sugar calories are deadly calories. Sugar causes heart attacks, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, cancer and dementia, and is reported to be the leading cause of liver failure in America. The biggest culprit is sugar-sweetened beverages, including sodas, juices, sports drinks, teas and coffees. They are by far the single biggest source of sugar calories in our diet.
Here's the simple fact: Looking around and see the increased quantity of sugar-sweetened beverages being kept in the shop/ bakery counter for sale. The number of processed food in the market and ordering of beverages in all the restaurants are ever increasing! Erosive tooth wear seems to have been forgotten amongst overweight people. The younger generation is likely to experience more dissolution of tooth tissue and tooth decay. At the other end of the spectrum, obese patients are more likely to develop diabetes, which in turn makes them more susceptible to periodontal (gum) disease. Recognising early and proper treatment of periodontal (gum) disease can have a profound effect on the control of diabetes and its complications. The latest research has shown that not only are people with diabetes more susceptible to serious periodontal (gum) disease, but the condition may also have the potential to affect blood glucose control and contribute to the progression of diabetes. Successful dental care requires collective effort between the patient and the dentist. Health care is a partnership in which both sides have different responsibilities and active roles, but if the clinician provides a service for ailments that the patient could have prevented, the question of self-governance arises.
Lest we forget, the ageing population is also at the risk —pharmaceutical products are likely to increase caries owing to a variety of co-morbidities, such as a dry mouth by inhibiting the saliva flow or heavily sugar-supplemented medication. Let’s change our behaviour: Many of us have realized sugar is a contributor to tooth decay for quite some time, but what have we done to stop the influx of sugary foods and beverages into our food chain? What have we really done to educate families about the dangers of an over-sugared diet? Yet, as a dental surgeon, I know I haven’t done enough. But, the more I learn about oral and systemic health issues, the more I am motivated to help my patients change their behaviors and lifestyles–to help them reduce their cavities and to help them reduce their obesity, heart disease, arthritis, and cancer rates. Cancer hurts and kills. Diabetes hurts and kills. Obesity hurts and kills. Tooth decay hurts and can serve as an early indicator of a more deadly underlying disease to come before it kills. Let’s heed our warnings, start sharing this information with others, and seriously look at alternative behavior modification techniques. Health is wealth! Proposal for badminton academy in Mokokchung
Mokokchung, July 15 (DiPR): The urgent need for setting up of a Badminton Sports Academy in Mokokchung was discussed during the monthly DPDB meeting of Mokokchung on July 15. The agenda was submitted by the District Sports Officer, Mokokchung K. Libemo Jami. While highlighting the concept of the project, the DSO maintained that the Administrative HQ of Mokokchung district is best suited for setting up such Academy, considering the feasibility aspect like, availability of sport infrastructures facilities, talent pool, sporting potentiality etc. It was pointed out that there is an urgent need to reverse the outlook of “sports as hobby” to “sports as profession” as the scope and avenue in sports is tremendous. The house with the understanding that by setting up such an academy would unleash sporting potential and transform the sports landscape of the state unanimously agreed to forward the proposed project to the Government for consideration. The long term vision is to make the Badminton Sports Academy a centre for nurturing and training budding young talent and make it as a sports feeder centre to reputed sports academics and institutions in the country.

Barca criticized for supporting Lionel Messi after fraud verdict
BaRcElona, July 15 (aP): Barcelona has drawn widespread criticism for its campaign to support Lionel Messi after a court found the Argentine forward and his father guilty of tax fraud. Barcelona launched its social media campaign following last week's court verdict that found Messi and his father guilty of defrauding the Spanish state of 4.1 million euros ($4.6 million). Neither man is expected to go to jail despite being sentenced to 21 months in prison because courts in Spain often suspend sentences under two years for firsttime offenders. The slogan “We Are All Leo Messi” is a play on the public awareness campaign by Spain's tax authorities “We Are All The Tax Office.” That is meant to encourage people to pay their due in a country still struggling to recover from an economic recession that has left unemployment at more than 20 percent. “The campaign invites all of Barcelona's fans to show the best player in the world their unconditional support,” Barcelona said. “We want to transmit to Leo that he isn't alone.” The club also posted a video of several dozen of its employees gathered together with hands raised in

a show of support for Messi. Widely panned in Spanish newspapers and online, Barcelona's campaign has earned a rebuke from Spain's government. “I am not Leo Messi. I haven't committed a fiscal crime,” acting Justice Minister Rafael Catala said Thursday. The president of Spain's Higher Sports Council, the country's leading sports authority, has also blasted the league champions for their rally call. “If the campaign intends
to make a complaint of some type against the judicial ruling, then it is completely incorrect,” council president Miguel Cardenal said. “We have to respect and honor the (court's) decision. You can't have campaigns of this type in order to disagree with a court ruling.” A worker's union that represents Spanish tax inspectors has asked Barcelona to end the campaign, calling it “irresponsible.” “The best thing for the club and the player would have been to accept the rul-
ing and move on,” said Carlos Cruzado, the president of the union Gestha. “But this campaign is destroying the educational work that must be carried out to make citizens conscientious (of their fiscal responsibilities.)” Messi and his father deny any wrongdoing and have said they will appeal the verdict to a higher court in Madrid. While his club has launched its campaign to back him, photos of Messi spending his vacation on a yacht have appeared this week in Spanish newspa-
pers. Those photos of Messi soaking up the sun in a bathing suit have spawned several jokes on social media about how he must be “suffering.” The spokesman for Barcelona's board of directors, Josep Vives, has defended both Messi and the club's campaign. “In similar cases, we haven't seen attacks like those Leo Messi is receiving,” Vives said. “It's obvious that we can't tolerate this derision of our player. “We have found ourselves in a controversy be-
cause it appears that FC Barcelona is defending tax fraud. What we are defending is a person that is being treated unjustly.” Besides his club, the Spanish league's president has also said he believes Messi is innocent. “I hope that the Supreme Court revokes the ruling because Messi is not a delinquent and shouldn't be found guilty,” league president Javier Tebas said. “I have interpreted the campaign as meaning that Messi shouldn't worry, and so he knows that his club is with him.” Messi is not the only player to have gotten into trouble over taxes. Also this year, Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherno was handed a suspended one-year sentence for tax fraud; teammate Adriano is being investigated for allegedly not paying all he owes; and former Real Madrid player Xabi Alonso has been accused of tax fraud. Alonso and Adriano deny any wrongdoing. In June, Barcelona paid a fine of 5.5 million euros ($6.21 million) to settle a case brought against the club by Spain's tax authorities regarding the signing of Brazil striker Neymar. In that agreement, the club acknowledged it had made “an error in the fiscal planning of the player's transfer.”

Julian Draxler to stay put at Wolfsburg, says sports director WolfSBuRg, July 15 (REutERS): Germany midfielder Julian Draxler will stay at VfL Wolfsburg this season, sports director Klaus Allofs has said. The 22-year-old has been linked by British media with a potential move to Premier League side Arsenal. Draxler, who joined Wolfsburg from Schalke 04 on a five-year contract in August, played 21 league matches and scored five goals as the Bundesliga club finished eighth in the standings last season and missed out on European football. Draxler, part of Germany's squad that won the 2014 World Cup, scored once for his country at Euro 2016, where they lost to hosts France in the semi-finals. "The situation with Draxler is 100 percent certain that he will be staying at Wolfsburg. There is no discussing that," Allofs told German website Sport1. However, he was uncertain about the future of winger Andre Schuerrle, who has been linked with a move to league rivals Borussia Dortmund. "Andre has told the trainer Borussia Dortmund's interest has made him think. But until now nothing has happened. It's not improbable that Andre stays."
Bryant slimed after winning Kids Choice prize
loS angElES, July 15 (REutERS): Retired Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant was given the traditional golden sliming at the Kids Choice Sport awards on Thursday after picking up the "Legend" prize. The 37-year-old was presented with the award, an orange blimp with a bushy mohawk, by American actress and singer Zendaya in Los Angeles before four jets emerged from the stage to douse the 18-time All Star in slime. Bryant brought down the curtain on his standout 20-year career with a 60-point showing in his final game against the Utah Jazz in April. He won five NBA Championships with the Lakers, two NBA Finals MVP awards and two Olympic gold medals for the United States. Former England soccer captain David Beckham and ex New York Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter are previous winners of the Kids Choice 'Legend' prize that comes with a gold sliming.
