Pochury orgs resent delay of Wuzu firing investigation

DIMAPUR, JULY 16 (MExN): Various organizations from the Pochury community have expressed resentment over the sluggish pace in which the enquiry commission constituted to probe into the July 16 Wuzu firing incident was going. It said the multi independent enquiries of different agencies including the administration, police, magisterial, state government, Assam Rifles and 12-Para commandos have failed to provide factual and impartial report as demanded by the public. This sentiment was expressed during a consultative meeting of Pochury Hoho office bearers, frontal organizations and range presidents under Pochury area on July 16 to deliberate on the progress of probe into the Wuzu firing incident.

Under a cloudy July 16 evening, students in Kohima solemnly huddled at the Old MLA junction to commemorate the one-year death anniversary of 13year old Aso and 14-year old Tüzali killed during the Wuzu firing incident on July 16, 2015, under Meluri subdivision of Phek district. A candlelight vigil jointly organised by the Naga Students’ Federation and the Pochury Students’ Union was observed. “Their lives were taken away from a society which could not protect them or give them justice,” said Neingulo Krome, Secretary General NPMHR, who sought forgiveness from Late Aso and Tüzali for failing to secure justice to them while also expressing shame and disgust at the Government of Nagaland and the civil societies for failing to address the issue. “Aso and Tüzali were not Undergrounds or Freedom fighters. They were just children. They were crucified. Their life was taken away in such a short time. How many more in-

Questioning the insincere initiative and delay tactics, Pochury Hoho, Pochury GB Union and Pochury Mothers’ Association in a joint press statement has appealed for a fast track investigation so that the family of the Wuzu firing incident victims gets justice at the earliest. The organizations also lamented that if the AR and Para commandoes had not touched and carried the bodies of the slain NSCN (K) cadres in the first place, the incident could have been avoided. It therefore squarely blamed the security forces for the cause of the incident. The Pochury organizations also urged the Government of India to withdraw the AFSPA and DAA from Nagaland in order to usher in peace.

Finding creativity and healing through art Special tree plantation at Tuensang Morung Express News Dimapur | July 16

This self-taught artist began dabbling in art a long time ago, but it was the demise of her son two years ago which brought her creativity to life. An exhibition of limited edition prints by artist Grace Zopianga was an inspiring message in so many ways. Showcasing her work for the first time, the artist also shared that it was her late son’s birthday. She spoke about the power of healing through art and how it works as therapy for her. She expressed sentiment that she wanted her work to relate to people facing similar problems of loss and bereavement. The exhibition “Joy Comes in the Morning” she said was a result of a revelation she had received from the Lord in the time of her mourning. She

Her art style is beauty expressed in every stroke, light and delicate- almost fragile. Images of wildflowers captured first through her camera and later painted painstaking-

ly for hours on end. Wildflowers on her neighbors hedge, flowers seen on the way to Kohima, Morning Glory captured in early dawn- these are some of the expressions caught by

the artist on canvas. The exhibition was held at Windfall, Paku Court, Opposite IMC Hall, Supply Colony, Dimapur and received wonderfully by visitors.

Rape accused Tripura official Arunachal: Pema Khandu poised to be next CM sent to 14 days judicial custody

New Delhi, July 16 (BS): On Saturday, the Congress exhibited rare nimble footedness to replace Nabam Tuki with Prema Khandu as its chief ministerial candidate in Arunachal Pradesh. The change in leadership spurred a rebellion against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supported Kalikho Pul, with Khandu claiming that he has the backing of as many as 47, including two independents, of the 58 legislators in the state assembly. Among the MLAs was also former state finance minister Kalikho Pul, whose defection had precipitated a chain of events that culminated in a historic Supreme Court judgment earlier this week reinstating Nabam Tuki's chief ministership. Pul had defected and formed his own party in February, and became chief minister with the BJP's support. The rebel MLA had cited inaccessibility of top Congress leaders, including Tuki and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi as the reason for his defection. The Arunachal Pradesh Assembly has an effective strength of 58 MLAs out of 60. The BJP has a strength of 11, while two are independents. Hours ahead of a scheduled floor test in the Assembly, which Tuki was directed by Governor Tathagat Roy to take, the Congress Legislature Party met and elected 37-year-

Arunachal developments shows only Congress can give stability, says Congress spokesperson

New Delhi, July 16 (iANS): The Congress on Saturday welcomed the latest political developments in Arunachal Pradesh wherein all rebel party legislators have come back to the party fold and said that this proves that only it can provide a stable administration in the northeast. "This has been proved now that only Congress give stable administration in the northeast," Congress spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala told reporters here. He also said the clear verdicts from highest court of the land - the Supreme Court - on Uttarakhand earlier and lately on Arunachal Pradesh should serve as a big "lesson" for Prime Minister Narendra Modi "who wanted to pursue a politics of destablising" opposition party-led governments in the states.

old Pema Khandu, son of late chief minister Dorjee Khandu, as its new leader. Tuki proposed the name of Khandu, which was unanimously accepted by 44 MLAs who were present. Speaker Nabam Rebia did not attend the meeting while ousted chief minister Khaliko Pul attended the meeting with the rebel MLAs. Ahead of the Congress Legislative Party meeting, Tuki met the Governor and told him he was quitting as the chief minister and of the Congress party's decision to elect a new leader. Khandu, 36, son of former Arunachal CM Dorje Khandu, is likely to be sworn in as the chief minister next week. Gover-

nor Tathagata Roy, a former West Bengal BJP leader, has indicated that there will not be a floor test. Dorje Khandu had died in a helicopter crash in April 2011. The Congress conceded that one reason it had lost control of the government was the high-handed functioning of Tuki, the previous CM. However, the road for Khandu is unlikely to be smooth as the rebels, given their lack of numbers, have conceded defeat for the time being rather than be disqualified under the antidefection law. What has happened in Arunachal Pradesh is a replay of the way the Congress lost power in Uttarakhand following defections and lat-

er regained it following the intervention of the courts. The government and BJP today tried to distance themselves from the embarrassment in Arunachal Pradesh. Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said: "The BJP and the central government have nothing to do with whatever is happening in Arunachal Pradesh. The political instability has been happening in last seven months due to the division within the Congress. We have nothing to do with the internal matter of Congress." In Itanagar, Khandu said: "Now there are no differences and the Congress is united at the intervention of Congress President So-

Smart city project: NE wants 90:10 ratio in funding AgArtAlA, July 16 (iANS): Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has requested Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu to share the investment in smart city projects for the northeastern states by adopting a 90:10 ratio -- 90 per cent by the central government and 10 per cent by the state. Sarkar met Naidu on Friday in New Delhi and urged him to adopt a separate funding policy for the backward northeastern states, Tripura Urban Development Minister Manik Dey told reporters on Saturday. The present funding pattern for the smart city project is on a 50:50 basis between the central government and the states. "The Finance Ministry had issued a circular earlier that the 90:10 ratio norms would be followed in all central government launched projects," Dey said.

"Naidu remained noncommittal after Sarkar put up the proposal," Dey said, adding that northeastern states are unable to bear the huge financial burden to implement the smart city projects. The minister said that other northeastern states have already made similar demands. Three cities in the northeastern region -- Guwahati (Assam), Imphal (Manipur) and Agartala (Tripura), have been selected for the implementation of the ambitious smart city plan so far . Other cities of northeastern states that participated in the fasttrack competition, included Shillong (Meghalaya), Aizawl (Mizoram), Kohima (Nagaland) and Pasighat (Arunachal Pradesh). These cities failed to fulfil the stipulated criteria and can submit their revised smart city plans for evaluation in the third round of competition

likely to be held a few months later. Aiming at the all-round development of the infrastructure of the cities, the Smart City Mission marks a paradigm shift towards overall urban development in the country since it is based on a 'bottom up' approach with the involvement of citizens in the formulation of a city vision and smart city plans and the urban local bodies and state governments piloting the mission with little say for the Ministry of Urban Development. The Tripura Chief Minister also requested the Urban Development Minister to give relaxation in the centre-state funding pattern for northeastern states in the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation, Swachh Bharat Mission and Heritage Development and Augmentation Yojana.

ZYF executive North East gears up for meeting today vigorous Monsoon conditions imphAl, July 16 (mexN): An executive meeting of the Zeliangrong Youth Front (ZYF) will be held on July 17 (Sunday), 11:00 am at ZYF Head Office in Imphal to discuss the following agenda and various social issues confronting the Zeliangrong society: Review of all the developmental works and activities in Zeliangrong areas; villages internal problems; social issues/problems. Therefore, a press release from ZYF General Secretary, Donponang Daimai has informed all the Central Executive Members, Zonal Chairmen along with all the Executive Members, former Executive Members and Advisors to attend the said meeting without fail.

guwAhAti, July 16 (Skymet): As reiterated by Skymet Weather, Monsoon rains have already picked up pace over several parts of Northeast India. Particularly, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya have recorded moderate to heavy rains during the last 24 hours. Few places have also witnessed extremely heavy rainfall. According to Skymet Weather, these active Monsoon conditions can be attributed to the northwards movement of the axis of Monsoon trough. The trough is now running closer to the foothills of Himalayas. Not only this, a cyclonic circulation is also marked over North Bangladesh and adjoining Assam that is

also enhancing the rain activity. As we proceed further, the trough is likely to oscillate further closer to the foothills of Himalayas. In wake of this, we can expect vigorous Monsoon conditions over Northeast India. During the next 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rains are likely to batter several parts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, along with Sikkim and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. Few places are also expected to record extremely heavy Monsoon showers. Meanwhile, remaining states of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura will continue with mainly moderate showers with isolated heavy spells.

Surjewala hoped that now with the change of regime in Arunachal Pradesh and return of Congress government, the central government will extend all necessary cooperation to it for development of the border state. He also lashed out at BJP chief Amit Shah for precipitating a politics of destabilising the Congress-ruled state governments. In a dramatic development earlier in the day, Chief Minister Nabam Tuki resigned as Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and later as chief minister. In a meeting in state capital Itanagar, Congress legislators including the rebels elected Pema Khandu as the new CLP leader. The proposal was supported by all the 44 legislators, including 15 Congress and 29 dissident Congress legislators who had joined the People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) in February.

nia Gandhi and Vice President Rahul Gandhi." A five-judge constitution bench of the Supreme Court earlier this week unanimously restored the Congress government in Arunachal Pradesh and quashed the Governor's orders which had advanced the session of Arunachal's legislative assembly from January 14 to December 16 last year. The apex court quashed all of the directions of the Governor that had precipitated the constitutional crisis in the northeastern border state. However, the order on Arunachal is unprecedented since it has called for restoring a government even after a subsequent govern-

ment has taken the oath of office. Earlier this year, first the Nainital High Court and then the Supreme Court had quashed the central rule in Uttarakhand and paved the way for the Harish Rawat-government to be reinstated. In the wake of the Uttarakhand order, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, himself a noted constitutional lawyer, said in Parliament that "step by step, brick by brick, the edifice of India's legislature is being destroyed due to judicial activism". At a press conference a few days later, Jaitley advised the judiciary that it needed to blend activism with restrain and not interfere in the sphere of executive.

Manipur to regulate private clinics by next yr Newmai News Network Imphal | July 16

The Manipur Government Health Services is planning to regulate mushrooming private clinics operating in the State by early next year. Informing this during a press conference at the DIPR premises here, Director of Health Services, O Ibomcha Singh said implementation of the proposed new regulation is expected early 2017. Many government-employed doctors are found to be working at private hospitals in the State. This has become a pressing concern for the government and the people as well. As per the Manipur Nursing Home and Clinic Registration Act, 1992, license of a government-employed doctor can be cancelled if he or she is found to be working at private hospitals. In another case, several private clinics have had their licenses suspended for operating in violation of this Act. Ibomcha said the government is hoping to bring together a total of 322 private nursing homes into five-six integrated ones. He also expressed concern over the failed attempt of the government in implementing a ban on sale and consumption of tobacco products. Gutka, pan masala and other chewing tobacco products, which are hazardous to health, have been banned by the Manipur State Government but these products are being consumed at a higher scale despite the effort. “Laxity on the part of government officials is one of the main factors contributing to the failure of the attempt. But there will be more restriction now as the task has been entrusted with the National Health Mission,” Ibomcha said. He cited that 80% of the total tobacco products of the country, which is the second largest producer, are consumed by its citizens with only 20% of the products exported to other countries.

force in Guwahati. Asom Gana Parishad, a partner of ruling BJP in Assam, has opposed the auctioning of the 12 oilfields in the state and appealed to the Centre to reconsider the decision. AGP senior leader Prafulla Kumar Mahanta visited the arrested protesters at the police station and supported their demand. All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) have also strongly opposed the central and state governments’ move to privatise the oil fields in Assam. Last month police lathicharged farmers of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti protesting against auctioning of the oilfields at the venue of a roadshow in presence of Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Pradhan had said at the programme that the 67 oilfields have reserves of Rs 70,000 crore that are not monetised yet and for the 12 oilfields in Assam, it stands at Rs 17,000 crore.

guwAhAti, July 16 (iANS): The Assam government on Saturday started the process to verify the rhino horns in its custody, giving in to demands for a CBI probe to ascertain the genuineness of the horns of one-horned rhinos. Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the Eastern Assam Wildlife Division Suvasish Das said that a government-instituted committee held its first meeting on Saturday."The committee has decided to compile the entire data base of the rhino horn kept in various treasuries of Assam and in due course of time, it will have transparent verification," he said. Assam Forest Minister Pramila Rani Brahma, who chaired the meeting of the committee on Saturday emphasised on the need for complete transparent evaluation so that along with the people of the state, the country and the world can know the actual status of the rhino horns stocked in various treasuries of Assam. Assam has over 2000 one-horned rhinos in the wild spread over various protected forest reserves including Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site. The rhino is also a sign of pride for the people of the state. However, the frequent killing of rhinos and nexus between the militants-poachers and alleged involvement of some of the department officials in poaching and trade of rhino horns have forced several wildlife NGOs in Assam to demand for a CBI probe into the cases of poaching.

AgArtAlA, July 16 (iANS): A local court in Tripura on Saturday sent, to 14 days judicial custody, a senior state government official arrested on charges of rape. Absconding Tripura Civil Service officer Panna Ahmed, 44, who was arrested from a house in Assam's Karimganj on Tuesday, was presented next day in a local court, which sent him to three days police custody. "After three days police custody and thorough interrogation, police today (Saturday) presented him in the first class judicial magistrate court and the court sent him 14 days judicial custody," West Tripura district police chief Abhijit Saptarshi told IANS. He said that senior police officials would further interrogate Ahmed about the incident and police are also looking for two locals who helped him to flee to Assam. Immediately after the reported crime, the Tripura government had suspended the civil service official, who was a sub-divisional magistrate in Sonamura sub-division of Sepahijala district. "The state government had recently requested the Union Home Ministry for issuance of a red corner notice to track Ahmed," Saptarshi said. A Muslim woman, mother of two children, filed an FIR with the West Agartala police station here on June 27 that Ahmed called her to his private residence here and raped her. Government reaches out to opposition for support on GST bill NEW DELHI, JuLy 16 (REutERs): The BJP-led central government held talks with its main political rival, the Congress party, to settle differences over tax reform legislation on Friday, and sources in the two groups with direct knowledge of the matter said a consensus appeared possible in a parliament session starting next week. The proposed reform, India’s biggest revenue shake-up since independence in 1947, seeks to replace a slew of central taxes and levies in 29 states, transforming the nation of 1.2 billion people into a

customs union. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party, which lacks a majority in the Rajya Sabha, has reached out to the Congress to end its opposition to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) bill which has stalled in parliament for years. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told reporters the government was trying to resolve differences with the Congress party, which include its demands to cap the tax rate at around 18 percent in the proposed bill.

The government has leaders ahead of the monsaid it does not want to be soon session of parliament bound to a particular rate beginning on Monday, where the government plans to discuss the bill. Under pressure to deliver on economic growth and jobs, the government is hoping that the tax reform legislation would make the country an easwritten into the law as any ier place to do business and future changes would re- fuel investment. quire a further amendment The GST bill could add of the constitution. 0.8 percentage point to In“We are trying to build dia’s economic growth in a consensus,” Jaitley said 3-5 years, HSBC said in a after meeting top Congress research note.

Congress leader Anand Sharma said discussions had been held with the finance minister and parliament affairs minister on the bill but declined to go into specifics. A source in the Congress party, however, said the party was ready to support the bill if the government committed to capping the tax rate later even if it did not make it part of the law immediately. Despite deep-seated political differences, the Congress party gave the government its support to a landmark bankruptcy bill at the last session.

iPhone sales to drop as Samsung makes deeper inroads NEW yoRk, JuLy 16 (IaNs): Soon after technology giant Apple reported its first-ever quarterly drop in iPhone sales in April, a new report has found that “the outlook for iPhone demand keeps getting murkier” as other leading smartphone brands like Samsung make inroads in the market. The number of iPhone units sold would tumble 12 per cent from 2015 and the upcoming iPhone 7 would be “a marginal cycle at best”, New York Post reported, quoting a Wall

Street analyst on Friday. Recently, retail data insights and consulting business Kantar Retail reported that Samsung’s Galaxy 7 line of smartphones grabbed 16% of total sales in the US during the three months ended May 31, exceeding the 14.6% of sales for the iPhone 6s. As the momentum of the 6s has slowed down, investors are worried about iPhone 7 that the device might not be a significant upgrade. Mark Moskowitz of Barclays forecast that this

year’s iPhone unit sales would total 203.7 million down from 231.5 million last year. The report by Kantar not only mentioned the threat to Apple but to its biggest rival Samsung as well by the increasing competition from lower-priced rivals, most notably Chinabased Xiaomi and Huawei. “Apple and Samsung should stop worrying so much about each other and take a look around them,” Kantar analyst Lauren Guenveur was quoted as saying, noting that Hua-

A day long workshop on North East India Biodiversity Portal (NEIBP) was held today at Patkai Christian College, Chumukedima with participants from Nagaland and surrounding areas. Organised by the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), the workshop was held in collaboration with the Zoology Department of the college. The aim of the workshop was to provide an opportunity to researchers, students, conservation

practitioners and biodiversity enthusiasts to learn about documenting and disseminating biodiversity related knowledge. The workshop consisted of a theory session on the various aspects of the India Biodiversity Portal (IBP) after which there was also a field visit around the college campus where participants documented some of the rich biodiversity found here. During the theory session, Rohit George, of the NEIBP, pointed to the low number of observations/ data from the NE despite the region being rich in

biodiversity and called on budding researchers to contribute to the portal. IBP is an innovative, participatory and open access biodiversity information platform for India to address the problem of biodiversity information not freely and openly available. Managed by a diverse group of partner institutions, the portal aims to establish a collaborative information system which will aggregate and integrate an array of biodiversity knowledge available with several entities in order to identify and prioritize conservation of biodiversity in India.

IBP currently has over 16000 records of observation from the North East. Of this, only 1279 are from Nagaland. “There is a lot of data to be collected from Nagaland and the North East,” George said urging the gathering to participate in IBP. Following the field visit, there was a practical session to get a hands-on experience of the portal. The organisers expressed hope that the workshop will help facilitate agencies involved in conserving the biodiversity and policy makers to prioritize efforts in conserving species and ecosystems.

ENSUD for obeying traffic rules PACSU alleges anomalies in electoral roll KiphirE, July 16 (mExN): Pungro Area College Students’ Union (PACSU) in an open letter to Chief Electoral Officer, Nagaland has highlighted certain anomalies in electoral roll of 60 Pungro-Kiphire A/C. PACSU President Achung Jangleh and General Secretary Rasuka Jacob S in the open letter brought to light that there are certain anomalies in the villagewise electorate inclusion

under the assembly constituency (A/C). It mentioned that seven villages, namely Tikenvong, Singrep, Langkok, Phelungre, Litsaoung, Tutheze and Anatongre have total voters exceeding their total population. The union also mentioned that percentage of total voters against the total population of Kiphire Sadar is 94%. “Conversely, the election office at Kiphire has been clandestinely

toting up electorates over the past years,” it alleged. “In the light of the mentioned facts, it is regretted that the noble initiative of Election Commission of India to eliminate bogus voters by campaigning in the form of NERPAP is a mockery,” PACSU stated, while requesting the authority concerned to look into the matter so that the mandate of the genuine voters is represented without nepotism during election.

better, the ENSUD said that the day’s initiative was a gesture of goodwill towards the Traffic police personnel, who have made it possible. ‘Serve the cause’ was the idea behind the day’s event. respecting Zebra Crossings, which have been placed for the convenience and safety of pedestrians. NPF on ACAUT’s SIT rejection, NPCC allegation

Kohima, July 16 (mExN): NPF today expressed disappointment and surprise at ACAUT Nagaland’s rejection of the Special Investigation Team set up by the Government to investigate the fuel adulteration case as the rejection followed with the rider that Commissioner of Police, Dimapur should head the SIT. This, it said, clearly indicates that ACAUT is concerned for Dimapur district alone. “To a layman’s understanding, since adulteration appears to have affected the whole State, the Government’s decision to set up the SIT headed by an IG level officer to upgrade the level and broaden the scope of investigations, appear to be the right move…,” stated a press release issued by NPF Press Bureau. Propriety and procedural lapses will surely occur if an SP of a district

or Commissioner of Police, Dimapur were to take over investigations in another district(s) of the State, according to NPF. The party further stated that ACAUT should not hamper the Government to go ahead with the investigations as per laid down rules and regulations if it sincerely wants the Government to get to the bottom of the matter to uproot evil practices. “It (ACAUT) should also not jump the gun by casting aspersions on the integrity of the SIT even before the Team can bring out its report,” the release stated. “Being an NGO, it should act like an NGO rather than appear to be acting at the behest of certain parties vested with political interests.” Regarding allegation of Chief Minister’s silence on the case, the release said, the day the matter came to light, the CM had called

for a meeting with the DGP and Chief Secretary to update himself and suggest ways to look into the issue urgently. He also held a series of discussions with the Home Minister and top officials concerned on the issue, it said. He also had a lengthy discussion with the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur and suggested various measures to ensure that the guilty are brought to book and the practice stopped once and for all, NPF said. Meanwhile, admitting that the discrepancies and issues raised by ACAUT in recent times need to be corrected for the betterment of the whole society, the NPF stated these discrepancies, malpractices and irregularities have been continuing for quite some time and is not the creation of the present Government alone. “So, instead of locking horns and going against

the Government of the day, it would only be proper and appropriate if it cooperates and jointly work to correct the undesirable practices in the system.” In this light, NPF opined that intensive checking throughout the State under the upgraded SIT should be appreciated by one and all, and every individual, agency or concerned citizens should extend their cooperation to the investigating team without hampering or interrupting the process of investigation.

‘Congress jittery after formation of NEDA’ In a separate press note, NPF stated the Congress party in Nagaland appears to be jittery after the formation of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) since the Alliance has vowed to rid the region of the Congress after the next General Elections.

Referring to NPCC ridiculing the 15 minutes Assembly session and the legislators taking rest the next day, NPF said the duration of the first day of the NLA session was only 15 minutes because the business of the day required only 15 minutes to be tabled. After the session, most of the senior legislators, including the Chief Minister, rushed off to Guwahati to attend the launching ceremony of the NEDA the next day “where it was unanimously declared that the Congress party is a conglomeration of forces inimical to the progress and prosperity of the nation,” it stated. “The call for Congressfree India by 2020 was resoundingly loud, and it is understandable that the Congress remnants in few pockets of the country, including Nagaland, should be perturbed.” The release further in-

formed that right after the meeting, the participants from Nagaland returned back to the State to attend the next day’s Assembly session. Far from taking rest on the intervening day of the two-day Assembly session as alleged by the Congress party, NPF said, the “legislators and party functionaries were literally burning the midnight oil to ensure that the Congress party becomes a memory after the next elections in the State and the region.” “So, instead of concerning itself with whether the present legislators care for the predicaments of their Constituencies, the Congress party in Nagaland should worry if it would get people to take their party tickets in the next elections in the State, or if their ticket holders can retain their security deposits after the election results.”

DPDB Mon meeting postponed The chairman of District Planning & Development Board (DPDB) Mon has informed that the DPDB meeting scheduled on July 18 has been postponed and rescheduled on July 27. Kohima ward panchayats meet The Association of Kohima Municipal Wards Panchayat (AKMWP) has convened an emergency meeting of all ward panchayat Chairmen and Secretaries under Kohima Municipal Council on July 19, 4:00 pm at the office of AKMWP, 2K Hotel building, Officer’s Hill, Kohima. The meeting has been convened to discuss ‘Housing for All’ scheme loan under Nagaland State Level Technical Cell, according to a press release from AKMWP President, Neibulie Kiewhuo and Secretary, Thejao Sekhose. Ward Chairmen may bring any agenda for discussion regarding their respective wards, the release added. Meanwhile, AKMWP lauded the Kohima Ao Baptist Arogo (KABA) youth department for beautifying the capital through artistic paintings of the over bridges in Kohima Town “which were neglected by the successive Govt. of Nagaland.”

Egg Drop Project

T

he egg drop is a classic science project that kids will love. Can you design a system that will protect an egg from a fall? Give it a try and find out. Use items from around the house to build something that will prevent eggs smashing all over the ground.

What you'll need: • Eggs • Paper towels

Build your egg protectors from resources such as: • Plastic straws • Popsicle sticks • Tape • Recycled paper • Glue • Plastic bags • Boxes • Used material • Plastic containers

The aim: Your goal is simple, design and build a system that will protect an egg from a 1 metre (3.3 feet) drop. Eggs that smash or crack fail the test while eggs that survive without a scratch pass! Getting started: You need to create something that can absorb

Step by step Tutorial for Drawing a Bird

the energy the egg gathers as it accelerates towards the ground. A hard surface will crack the egg so you have to think carefully about how you can protect it. Something that will cushion the egg at the end of its fall is a good place to start, you want the egg to decelerate slowly so

it doesn't crack or smash all over the ground. You'll need to run a few trials so have some eggs ready as guinea pigs, those that don’t survive will at least be comforted knowing they were smashed for a good cause, and if not, you can at least have scrambled eggs for dinner right?

Birds have wings, feathers, and lay eggs. There are about 10000 different species of birds across the globe. Ostrich is the largest bird known to lay the largest eggs. Birds have hollow bones that help them in flying. Some species of birds are intelligent enough to use tools and also create them. Kiwis are endangered birds that live in New Zealand. Humming Birds can fly backward. 20% of the Bird species migrate each year. Birds like Dove, Love Birds, and Parakeets kept as pets in houses. They enjoy living in pairs. A Penguin is the only bird that can swim and not fly. It is also the only bird to walk upright. Owls can turn their head up to 360 Degrees. It cannot move its eye, though. The first bird that was domesticated by the humans was the Goose. Female birds choose their male counterpart depending on how attractive they find them. Male birds are more glamorous and have a better voice than the females. Kiwi birds are blind and hunt by smell. Chickens that lay brown eggs have red ear lobes. Crows have the largest brain when compared to the body size of any avian family. Mockingbirds can imitate many sounds from a squeaking door to a cat meowing.

The root cause for that hate was because of the people who murdered my dad. Ma’am prayed over me and suggested that I should forgive the men who were responsible. When I went home, the

thought kept lingering on in my mind, I was praying over it and there was something in my heart that told me I could forgive them. It wasn’t a voice, it was just a thought that suddenly popped up, reassuring me that I would be finally able to forgive them wholeheartedly. So I decided to do that, and I just spoke it out saying “Whoever you are, wherever you are, whatever you’ve done, I forgive you. I forgive you. I

FORGIVE YOU!”. The moment I confessed that I forgave them, there was this comforting feeling inside of me. I set myself free, and the atmosphere around me suddenly changed. I was a happier person, a happier Christian, stronger and more confident in my identity as a child of God. As hard as it is, no matter the extent of the wrongs done to us, forgiving the ones who have done us wrong always brings us a step closer to God. In spite of what we think is right or wrong, we become our own hurdles when we harbor hate & resentment in our hearts. Forgiveness sets us free, we break the chains that bind us. There’s just this clarity that we find, and I’m telling you, you just find peace and joy. To anyone who’s struggling with finding it in their hearts to forgive someone, just remember there’s a guy who died for us, who paid the price for all of our sins (past, present and future). His name is Jesus! He didn’t die just for our sins, He died for everybody! That includes the people who have done you wrong, so remember if God could give you for the things you’ve done, why can’t you forgive the person who did you wrong? Set yourself free.

hile Christians should certainly seek to receive their parents’ blessing for a marriage, they shouldn’t wait for this blessing forever, theologian John Piper says. Piper, founder and teacher for DesiringGod.org and chancellor of Bethlehem College & Seminary in Minneapolis, Minnesota, shares his advice for couples who are planning to get married in an interview posted on Monday. Christians, Piper says, should revere their parents and value their opinion when it comes to something so serious as the prospect of marriage, but they also don’t need to wait forever if their parents refuse to give the couple their nuptial blessing. This is because Jesus’ blessing over one’s parents’ blessing is far greater, he explains, pointing to Matthew 10:35–37 when Jesus says: “I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother. … Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.” “In other words, devotion to father and mother is not absolute. Jesus is absolute. Now, that doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want to do without reference to your parents, but it does mean that there is a new factor in the world that is greater than allegiance to parents; namely, allegiance to Jesus,” Piper emphasizes. While Christians don’t need to necessarily wait around forever for their parents to give their blessing, it is important that the parents’ opinion is weighed heavily, as they will often lend a wise and love-filled opinion to their child’s life decisions.

“If you believe that your loyalty to Jesus is leading you to marry someone, and you don’t yet have your parents’ approval, you need to ask seriously, ‘Have my parents really proved themselves to be unfit in making such Kingdom judgments?’ Perhaps they have. Maybe they are not even Christians. But don’t fail to be sure,” Piper says, suggesting that parents are full of experience, love and wisdom and are therefore likely to offer a good opinion of one’s potential spouse. Regardless of the opinion a parent gives, it is important for Christians to remain loving and caring toward their relatives, he adds. “Don’t let there be a spirit of defiance towards your parents or a spirit of indifference to what they say as if their opinions don’t matter. Let there be a spirit of humility and prayer and longing so that they can discern that your desire is for their blessings,” the theologian writes. Piper has spoken on the subject of Christian marriages before, writing in a previous blog post that Christians contemplating marriage should usher in a new culture of simple, God-centered weddings, instead of expensive, extravagant affairs that may focus on cake, clothing and food more than Jesus. Christian nuptials should be centered on “the Christ-exalting meaning of marriage, the awesome importance of the vows, the preciousness of the people, the lovers — and not the clothing, the flowers, the location, the music, the whole production that can make the actual act of God in marriage seem like an incidental prelude to the big, fancy party afterwards,” Piper wrote in a blog post from earlier this month.

I

remember sitting on the floor of our youth building one Sunday morning while one of the dads who attended our church led a small group for me and four other boys. I was bored, I was ready to leave and I was hoping he didn’t ask me if I memorized the Bible verse from last week; because I didn’t. I was around 12 years old and had just begun a dark and weary descent into what I didn’t know would be a six-year battle with severe depression. All I knew was this; I didn’t want to sit around with people who didn’t know me and act like everything in my life was OK. I was sick and tired of being sick and tired, and I no longer wanted to pretend like my life was just dandy. Our small-group leader had asked the group to share what God was doing in their lives and how the rest of the group could be praying. After all the other boys had shared with the group what God was up to in their lives, it was now my turn to share. I debated whether or not to give some shallow and cliche’ answer. But while I knew that would have been the easy way out of having a deep conversation, I decided I no longer wanted to act like nothing was wrong. Instead, I told everyone that I was struggling, hurting and having a hard time with my relationship with God. Blank stares began to fixate themselves on me. Confusion filled the group. It was as if everyone was thinking, “Wow! He actually took the question seriously.” I felt a little embarrassed for sharing my heart with a group of people I really knew nothing about, but I felt that sharing my pain was probably the best way to find healing for it. To my surprise, it seemed that not even the smallgroup leader knew how to handle my honest response to his question, and his reaction to my cry for help is something I have never forgotten. He looked at me and said, “Well, Jarrid. I’d encourage you to just pray harder. God will take care of it.” Yup…That’s all I got. When you tell someone who is hurting “You just need to pray harder,” what you’re really saying is, “You’re not praying hard enough”—which in itself is a false depiction of the way God moves in the lives of everyday people. If God answered prayers by how hard someone is to pray, then God would be a transactional genie and not an almighty and sovereign God. Sure, God responds to our prayers, but he isn’t controlled by them. I remember going home defeated, thinking that my already shaky faith in God was actually worse than I thought it was. I felt insulted, not good enough and that my smallgroup leader had just confirmed everything I had already thought about myself; that I was a broken and sucky Christianity. I’m assuming this was one of the many experiences that attributed to my years of distaste toward God and church. Looking back, I understand why my small-group leader said what he did. He didn’t mean any harm. He had good intentions. He just wasn’t equipped with the tools necessary to handle the honest conversation. I know he was trying to give me advice that pointed back to Jesus, but his advice fell short on many levels. Regardless if someone is well-equipped to handle every situation they are thrown in life, I believe the statement “Just pray harder” is something that should be used with extreme caution and understanding. We must be willing to help people in their journey of pain and hurt, not pawn them off to Jesus because it’s easier than spending time with someone who needs you. Prayer is a powerful weapon, but “Just pray harder” without follow-up is horrible advice.

hose were the golden years.” We’ve all used that phrase, and we’ve all heard that phrase. It hearkens back to a bygone era of success, vibrancy and comfort. An era which has now passed, and an era which beckons us to experience again its glory. And so the phrase “those were the golden years” escapes our lips as a lament. We lament what has been lost, as if we’ll never again attain that level of blessing or joy. People in the pews remember the golden years. They were when so-andso was doing such-and-such, and when this-and-that was happening, until thisand-that happened, and we stopped doing such-and-such, and then we lost soand-so. People in church leadership remember the golden years too. They were when the budget was bigger, attendance was higher, the buzz was buzzier and the grass was greener, until summer turned to winter, the cold winds blew in and ev-

erything dried up. Oh, for the golden years. If only we could have those years back again. If only we could recapture that magic. If only we could just do what we did then. If only we could take matters into our own hands. If only, if only, if only. The people of Israel fell into this trap in Exodus 32. From a toxic combination of forgetfulness, impatience, sinfulness, fear and disobedience came their decision to take matters into their own hands, and to make for themselves their own god: a golden calf. Astoundingly, the people then attributed their deliverance to the idol they had made with their own hands. Big mistake. Because, in fact, their God was at work in ways they couldn’t see, leading them forward through the desert to a new land. It’s tempting to look back on the golden years when you’re wandering through the desert. Even if those golden years were actually not as rosy as you’re remembering. How often do we do the same thing? We know we’re wandering, we know

we’re not where we used to be and we’re scared. But we know that we used to do was working, and we know how to do that, so let’s get busy building what we know, and then stand back and watch our deliverance. Big mistake. Because, in fact, our God is at work in ways we can’t see, leading us forward through the desert to a new day. The person who rolls his or her eyes at the faithful trusting in a God who leads his people forward into new lands is a person who has made a golden calf out of the golden years. But the person who waits, expectedly and faithfully and longingly, for God’s sovereign provision and perfect timing, has placed his trust in the right place. So look back on the “golden years” and remember. Remember God’s faithfulness and goodness. But don’t idolize those golden years,

and attempt to take matters into your own hands, and recreate those years. Instead, trust in the same God who was faithful and good then, trusting that he is faithful and good now, and follow him wherever he leads. God’s love for you is a love in action Selie Visa

1. God is mindful of mankind: “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?” (Psalm 8:3-4) God has established two spheres: heaven and earth. The heavenly bodies all have their appointed place. In comparison to the vastness of the outer space, the order and the importance of the heavenly bodies, mankind is rather insignificant. Human beings are by nature mere earthlings with a tiny presence in the limitless universe, and yet they are the particular objects of God’s attention. The Creator has invested glory and honor on them. The verbs “mindful” and “care for” convey the care of God for mankind, who remembers positively by acting on behalf of the human race.

2. God is the Creator: The First Law of Thermodynamics asserts that matter or its energy equivalent can neither be created nor destroyed. One of the logical outcomes of this law is that there is no new matter or energy appearing anywhere in the universe, nor is there any matter being annihilated. All matter and energy in the universe is conserved. Consequently, this law is often referred to as the Law of Conservation of Mass and Energy. Jarrid Wilson is a husband, pastor and author relent- Although matter can neither lessly sharing the love of Jesus. be created nor destroyed, it can

be converted from one state to another, i.e. from a liquid to a gas, liquid to solid, solid to gas. So what caused the universe to come into existence? Matter and energy cannot be created, hence the universe and everything in it can only come from the uncreated and the uncaused God. He is spirit and he is eternal. He always existed, there never was a time he didn’t exist. Time and space does not apply to him. He is the Creator and not a part of the creation. His creation was an absolute creation, a creating of something out of nothing. Within the endless universe that God has created, mankind is the crown of his creation. He loves them and we have a covenant relationship with him. 3. Science- a search for God: In 1865 the Congress of Liege declared, “Science has made God unnecessary.” But it is not as easy as declaring such a statement. Deep mysteries surround the universe. Science resolves many problems and answers many questions each year. But the solutions and the answers only add more to the great mystery of the universe. The Bible is not a scientific book; explaining the laws of science is not its main concern. The purpose of the Bible is to speak to us about God. The Bible is an extraterrestrial book. It is God making contact with human beings. The Bible touches on world history so far as man is concerned. It is the history of the beginning of man to his redemption that

to love our fellow believers with the love God has loved us with. Paul explores the depths of God’s love and finds it in the cross of Christ. Behind the death of Christ for sinners is the love of God. God’s love for us defines what true love requires… the commitment to sacrifice one’s most beloved possession for another’s gain. So for God, love required that he send “his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 4:10). Therefore, God’s love in us requires deeds by which we show our love for 4. has separated us from God. The Bible says “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” God is perfect and holy, and our sins separate us from God forever. The Bible says “The wages of sin is death.” The good news is that, “God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life” Jesus is the unblemished sacrificial Lamb of God and died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. Jesus rose from the dead on the third day and now he is in heaven with God his Father. He offers us the gift of eternal life -- of living forever with Him in heaven if we believe in him. Jesus’s said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except by me.” God reaches out in love to you and wants you to be His child. “As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe on His name.” You can choose to ask Jesus Christ to forgive your sins and come into your life as your personal Lord and Saviour. Let’s pray: “Lord Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God. I am a sinner. I want to thank you for your unfathomable love and dying on the cross for my sins. Please forgive my sins and give me the gift of eternal life. I ask you to come into my heart and my life as my personal Lord, Master and Saviour. I want to obey you and serve you always. Amen”

Delhi must demonstrate sensitivness to Kashmir's grievances Amulya Ganguli

Media locked down as one more dies in Kashmir violence

India would have faced far greater criticism of its handling of the outbreak in Kashmir if the international scene was calmer. With the US embroiled in its own racial militancy, France reeling under repeated terrorist attacks (Nice being the latest), Turkey facing a coup and most other European countries still grappling with the economic and social consequences of Brexit, not much attention has been paid to the violence in Kashmir as may have been expected. It took four days for the US and the UN to react after Pakistan predictably told the Security Council members that the upsurge was not India's "internal affair". There is little doubt, however, that if the situation is not quickly brought under control, there will be widespread disquiet about the frenzied protests in the valley which have underlined the continuing alienation of ordinary Kashmiris from the governments in New Delhi and Srinagar. The situation has been complicated by the fact that although the leader of the ruling coalition in Srinagar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has its roots in the Valley unlike its junior partner, the BJP, it has been unable to effectively reach out to the people. The reason for this failure is the high level of anger and disenchantment of the locals against the "establishment", even if the latter includes Kashmiri repre-

SriNAgAr, July 16 (iANS): A civilian was killed in a clash with police on Saturday as the Jammu and Kashmir government cracked down on newspapers published here and blocked cable TV, creating an information blackout amid tight security restrictions for the ninth day in the Kashmir Valley. A police spokesperson said "stray and intermittent incidents of stone pelting" protests erupted at many places in north Kashmir. A mob attacked a police post in Hatmulla village of Kupwara district, some 100 km from here. "While dealing with the situation three people were injured. One of them succumbed to his injuries," the spokesperson said, taking the toll to 42 in the current street unrest that has engulfed the valley. Suspected militants in a south Kashmir village shot at and injured two persons, including a relative of an arrested aide of Wani, police sources said. In an apparent bid to stop local newspapers from reporting about the unrest, the government issued an undeclared gag against the media. sentatives, including Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who belongs to the younger generation and has been credited with being a good communicator by her political rival, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. However, if Mehbooba has been relatively silent and seemingly clueless about how to deal with the crisis, the explanation is not only her youth and administrative inexperience but the breakdown of communications between the politicians and the people. It is possible that even reaching out to the separatists of the Hurriyat conference -- hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani and the

Now, Smriti Irani dropped from cabinet panel on parliamentary affairs New Delhi, July 16 (iANS): In yet another snub to Smriti Irani, the Textile Minister has been dropped as a member of the new Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs (CCPA) announced on Saturday. A fresh list issued by the Cabinet Secretariat said that Irani's successor as HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar has been accommodated in her place. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, who was lately given Independent charge of the Ministry of Minority Affairs, will be a special invitee as well as Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs S.S. Ahluwalia and Minister of State for Law P.P. Chaudhary. In the cabinet reshuffle announced on July 5, Prime Minister Narendra Modi moved out Irani from the high-profile HRD Ministry to Textiles. In the reconstituted panel, new Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad replaced his predecessor D.V. Sadananda Gowda. Rajiv Pratap Rudy, who has been divested of his Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs portfolio, too has been dropped as a special invitee, being replaced by Ahluwalia. The committee, headed by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, has 11 members, including three special invitees. Other members are Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley, M Venkaiah Naidu, Ram Vilas Paswan and Ananth Kumar, who is also the new Parliamentary Affairs minister replacing Naidu.

NGO urges government to introduce road safety bill New Delhi, July 16 (iANS): Road Transport and Highway Minister Nitin Gadkari was on Saturday urged to introduce the road safety bill in the monsoon session of parliament beginning on Sunday. Noted NGO Consumer Voice, which has been demanding stringent laws to bring down road accidents, in a petition submitted to the ministry, said harsher punishment be given to the violators to curb road accidents. According to Indian Road Accidents 2015 report, road crashes increased by 2.5% in the last couple of years, while deaths due to the road accidents have increased by 4.6%. The former Planning Commission estimated a loss of over 3% of the country's Gross Domestic Product each year to road accidents, which amounts to Rs 4 lakh crore. "Governments across the globe are working towards strong legislation to curb road fatalities, but India still is not able to introduce a road safety bill," Ashim Sanyal, CEO, Consumer Voice, said. "Safer roads and mobility is one of the 5 pillars of the UN Global Plan for the decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020. The importance of saving lives on the roads has also been recognised as a Sustainable Development Goal. This states that the road casualties must be reduced by 50% by 2020," Sanyal said.

Woman mortgages jewellery to construct toilet PAtNA, July 16 (iANS): Setting a rare and inspiring example that has drawn her applause, a woman in Bihar mortagaged her gold and silver jewellery to raise money for constructing toilet at her house. Phulkumari Devi, in her mid-20s, has mortgaged her 'mangalsutra', 'nathia', 'payal' and 'bali'. For Phulkumari, it was not an easy decision to make as her mother-in-law Dewanti Devi and husband Vinod Kumar were against it. "Both tried to stop me... but I convinced them," she said. "It is an unique step by Phulkumari... her story will inspire others. Her intention and commitment are remarkable, the district administration will reward her for it," Rajesh Kumar, a district official said. Millions of people in Bihar do not have toilets at home. "My toilet is under construction now. I am sure and confident that I will complete construction of my toilet before August 15 (Independence Day)," Phulkumari said.

moderate Mirwaiz Umar Farooq -- as has been done by the government, will not be of much help since the popular anger over the killing of the young militant, Burhan Muzzafar Wani, has acquired a momentum of its own. It goes without saying that the death of a popular rebel -- JNU student leader Umar Khalid has compared Wani to Che Guevara -- can pose problems well beyond the capability of the triggerhappy security forces to solve. In death, the 22-yearold Hizbul Mujahideen "commander" has acquired a larger-than-life image. Ironically, he was called an Indian agent not long

ago because he was allowed to post pictures and videos on Facebook when such acts of other militants were censored. Now, the truth about his real identity will never be known. The fallout would have been less violent if Wani had been arrested and not killed. It will be a pity if the killing represents a new line of thinking on counter-insurgency operations which generally steered clear of extreme measures in order to avoid turning militants into martyrs in the eyes of the local population. What Wani's killing and the deaths of more than 30 protesters have shown yet again is that high-handed

action is not the solution to the unrest in Kashmir. All that it can do is to exacerbate the situation, leading to the knee-jerk reaction of the authorities to send more and more paramilitary personnel. As the Supreme Court's criticism of the immunity provided to the security forces by the draconian Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act even in "warlike" situations suggests, the government has to be far more restrained in trouble-prone areas. Otherwise, the disenchantment of the locals cannot but intensify. In Kashmir, the difficulty is that there is no one for

the government to talk to in order to defuse the situation. The protesters are a leaderless mob. Reaching out to them will be a fruitless exercise, especially when the government's dependence on the insensitive and unpopular police and paramilitary forces undermines official and political bona fides. The services of local politicians can be utilized, but they will either be too scared or will hedge their bets about their sympathies. The Hurriyat might have been of some help. But, as Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has said, the government seeks help from the organization when in trou-

"it as an attack on the freedom of press and vowed to fight back at all costs". They said in a statement that they spoke with the government but a spokesman told them that "a strict curfew" will be imposed in the next three days" following "apprehensions of a serious trouble aimed at subverting peace" in the Valley. In this situation, the government spokesman told Srinagar-based editors that the "movement of newspaper staff and distribution of newspapers will not be possible". They strongly condemned this ban and termed it "reprehensible". As a result of the crackdown, most Srinagar-based newspapers couldn't go to print and copies of those already printed were seized at midnight and early morning raids on their printing presses, the publishers said. Cable TV was snapped on Friday evening. Mobile phone internet connectivity has also been cut in the valley since the July 8 killing of the 22-year-old Hizbul Mujahideen commander, Burhan Wani. The only mobile service functional in the valley is Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and the only internet connectivity is the BSNL broadband service.

ble but treats it like a pariah in normal times. The governments in Delhi and Srinagar may decide to wait, therefore, for the storm to blow over. But what the two governments will have to realize is that throwing money at the Kashmiris in the name of development while building bunkers for the security forces, which remind Kashmiris of their vulnerability, will not bring peace. Instead, the security forces have to be far less visible. Their operations will also have to be targeted mainly at the infiltrators from Pakistan while the use of excessive force against

local suspects will have to be discouraged. Such restraints may not immediately defang the jehadis, inspired as they are by ISIS and Pakistani propaganda. But the average people may begin to distance themselves from the extremists. Since a political solution, which means drawing the stiff-necked, proPakistani separatists into the mainstream, is not feasible in the foreseeable future, Delhi and Srinagar, especially the former, have to demonstrate their sensitiveness to the grievances of the locals which is mainly directed at the security forces.

Focus on intelligence sharing, PM Narendra Modi tells CMs New Delhi, July 16 (iANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday that the country's internal security cannot be strengthened until the states and the Centres focus on sharing intelligence. Modi made the appeal while inaugurating a meeting of the Inter-State Council (ISC) after a gap of 10 years. "The internal security of the country cannot be strengthened until we focus on intelligence sharing, ensure greater coordination among agencies, and equip our police with modern

approach and technology. "While we have come a long way, we need to continuously increase our efficiency and capacity. We must constantly remain alert and updated," the Prime Minister said. He said the nation can only progress if the Centre and state governments worked together. The ISC provides a forum to discuss policies and is certainly the most significant platform to strengthen Centre-state and inter-state relations, he said. Modi said discussions with chief ministers and others would

help in building strong Centrestate relations. "The nation can progress only if the union and state governments walk shoulder to shoulder. It would be difficult for any government to successfully implement a scheme on its own. "Therefore, provision of adequate financial resources is as important as the responsibility for implementation. "There are only a few occasions when the leadership of the Centre and the states assembles together. "This forum of cooperative

federalism is the perfect setting to deliberate on the interests of the people, address their problems and take collective and concrete decisions. "It highlights the vision of the makers of our Constitution," the Prime Minister said. The meeting, held for the first time after 2006, will discuss internal security, recommendations of the Punchhi Commission on harmonizing Centre-state relations, the Aadhaar card and the use of Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for subsidies. Modi said with the acceptance of the 14th Finance Commission recom-

mendations, the states' share in central taxes had increased from 32 to 42 per cent. "This means that states now have greater financial resources to utilize in accordance with their requirements. "The total amount received by states from the Centre during 2015-16 is 21 per cent higher than the amount received in 2014-15. "Similarly, Panchayats and Urban Local Bodies will receive 2.87 lakh crore rupees during the period of the 14th Finance Commission, which is substantially higher than last time," he said.

‘Co-operative federalism will be empty rhetoric if states not given powers’ New Delhi, July 16 (iANS): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa on Saturday said co-operative federalism may "degenerate into empty rhetoric" if the states are not given "adequate powers and fiscal resources". Citing the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government's pledge to promote co-operative federalism, Jayalalithaa, welcoming the change of emphasis, also said: "Co-operative federalism should not become a catchword to impose uniform administrative practices across the country without due regard to the specificities of the socio-economic situation in each state," as per her speech circulated at the Inter-State Council meeting. While Jayalalithaa did not attend the meeting, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister

O.Panneerselvam represented the state and copies of her speech were distributed. Jayalalithaa said Justice M.M.Punchhi Commission's recommendations on restrained use of the Union's legislative powers on the subjects in the concurrent list deserve to be fully supported, and this an opportune moment to consider returning the subject of 'Education' to the state list and move 'Environment, Ecology and Climate Change' to the concurrent list. Expressing concern that the central government through the Centre State Investment Agreement (CSIA) is trying to pass on some of the financial burden it may suffer from adverse arbitration awards under existing Bilateral Investment Protection Agreements (BIPAs) or Bilateral Investment Treaties (BIT), she said: "States were

not party to such agreements and are not even aware of the contents of such agreements. To make States liable now under the CSIA mechanism for bilateral agreements entered into earlier is unfair." Referring to the draft CSIA that permits deduction of any dues from the state governments from the central government transfers, she said that this is unacceptable as bulk of these are based on Finance Commission recommendations. According to Jayalalithaa, there need be no change in the current legal position on Governor going by the advice of the Cabinet while granting sanction of prosecution against a Minister. Castigating the NDA government of guilty of indiscriminate resort to levy of cesses and surcharges, she said the trend has to be reversed and the cesses and sur-

charges imposed must be added back to the base taxes and made shareable with the states at least in the next fiscal year. She said certain recommendations of the Punchhi Commission with regard to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) support Tamil Nadu's stance relating to revenue neutrality, and assurance of providing 100 per cent compensation to states for revenue loss. Noting that while state level parties and leaders are not far more significant players, she said there is a steady shift in real political and economic power away from the central government. "These should not be seen as centrifugal or fissiparous trends that have to be curbed, but as a manifestation of India's maturing as a nation with diversity and as a democracy," Jayalalithaa said.

Govt confident of smooth sailing, GST passage in monsoon session New Delhi, July 16 (iANS): The stage is set for monsoon session of parliament beginning Monday with the government in an optimistic mood over the possibility of passage of Goods and Services Tax (GST) bill even as all eyes are on Sunday's all-party meeting. Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has called an all-party meeting on Sunday, a day before the session begins. After senior ministers including Arun Jaitley (Finance) met Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad and his deputy Anand Sharma on Thursday, the governments' floor managers and even others are optimistic that things would sail in smoothly in both houses

of Parliament especially the upper house where the numerical strength of Congress has so far stalled the GST bill. "We expect Congress leaders to speak up their mind on GST and other matters in tomorrow's allparty meeting. But we are hopeful," a key floor manager for the goverment told IANS. That Congress has an upper hand and all eyes will be on its moves was evident when Biju Janata Dal leader Bhartruhari Mahtab said: "We expect less of acrimony. But on GST it all depends on Congress. A section of Congress also seems in favour of the GST." There is no final word from the Congress yet on government's fresh proposals although govern-

ment side claims the meeting between Jaitley and Azad and Anand Sharma went down well. The Congress, which originally piloted the GST Bill, has said it is still in favour of the same. On the changes it has demanded, the government apparently is open to the idea of removing 18 cent cap on GST rate from the constitutional amendment bill. This provision can be put only in the main bill. If the rate is included in the constitutional amendment itself, then it cannot be changed later, the Congress has argued. BJD leader Mahtab said "even regional parties will not mind that the 18 per cent cap is put only in the main text of the bill so that it can be changed if neces-

sary". However, lot of skirmishes are expected in both houses as during the session which ends on August 12 as there are many other issues wherein the government can find itself cornered like the violence in Jammu and Kashmir. Other issues where the opposition and ruling sides can be seen at logger heads could be cases related to Ishrat Jahan and Lt.Col. Shrikant Purohit, and alleged attempts to "communalise" Uttar Pradesh politics. This session also happens to be first since Prime Minister Narendra Modi carried out the reshuffle. The real test of his new floor managers and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar will be in

Rajya Sabha where there are over 40 pending bills including the GST. In the recent biennial elections to Rajya Sabha in June, the BJP-led NDA strength has gone up to 74 with five additional seats while Congress has lost three seats and seen its tally go down to 60. The government also needs two-third majority in the Rajya Sabha to pass the constitutional amendment bill to roll out GST. To muster 163 members in the 245-member house, the government will need support of all regional players, like the Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, JD-U and others to vote to make it 163. Among regional parties, Samajwadi Party has 19 members, AIADMK 13,

Trinamool 12 and BJD 8. Nitish Kumar's JD-U has 10, Lalu Prasad's Rashtriya Janata Dal has 3 and Mayawati-led BSP's 6, Communist Party of IndiaMarxist 8, CPI-1 and DMK 4. Of the 10 bills expected to come in Lok Sabha during the 20-day sittings are: the Consumer Protection Bill 2015, the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Amendment Bill 2015, and the Lok Pal and Lokayuktas and Other Related Laws (Amendment) Bill. The government will also have to replace an ordinance that was promulgated to amend the Enemy Property Act as well as another one on the National Eligibility-cum Entrance Test (NEET), government sources said.

social media star Qandeel Baloch allegedly Defiant Turks fight back to retake Turkey Pak strangled by brother in honour killing: police

ISTANBUL/ANKARA, JULy 16 (ReUTeRS): Forces loyal to Turkey’s government fought on Saturday to crush the last remnants of a military coup attempt which collapsed after crowds answered President Tayyip Erdogan’s call to take to the streets and dozens of rebels abandoned their tanks. More than 160 people were killed, including many civilians, after a faction of the armed forces tried to seize power using tanks and attack helicopters. Some strafed the headquarters of Turkish intelligence and parliament in the capital, Ankara, and others seized a major bridge in Istanbul. Erdogan accused the coup plotters of trying to kill him and launched a purge of the armed forces, which last used force to stage a successful coup more than 30 years ago. “They will pay a heavy price for this,” said Erdogan, who also saw off mass public protests against his rule three years ago. “This uprising is a gift from God to us because this will be a reason to cleanse our army.” A Turkish broadcaster reported that a purge of the judiciary was also underway. One government minister said some military commanders were still being held hostage by the plotters. But the government declared the situation fully under control, saying 161 people had been killed and 2,839 had been rounded up from foot soldiers to senior officers, including those who had formed “the backbone” of the rebellion. A successful overthrow of Erdogan, who has ruled the country of about 80 million people since 2003, would have marked one of the biggest shifts in the Middle East in years, transforming a major U.S. ally while war rages on its border. However, a failed coup attempt could still destabilise a NATO member that lies between the European Union and the chaos of Syria, with Islamic State bombers targeting Turkish cities and the government also at war with Kurdish separatists. Erdogan, who had been holidaying on the southwest coast when the coup was launched, flew into Istanbul before dawn on Saturday and was shown on television outside Ataturk Airport. Addressing a crowd of thousands of flag-waving supporters at the airport later, he said the government remained at the helm, although disturbances continued in Ankara. Erdogan, a polarising figure

who had surrendered. Earlier, about 30 pro-coup soldiers had surrendered their weapons after being surrounded by armed police in Istanbul’s central Taksim square. Neighbouring Greece arrested 8 men aboard a Turkish military helicopter which landed in the northern city of Alexandroupolis on Saturday, the Greek police ministry said, adding that they had requested political asylum.

whose Islamist-rooted ideology lies at odds with supporters of modern Turkey’s secular principles, said the plotters had tried to attack him in the resort town of Marmaris. Erdogan’s AK Party has long had strained relations with the military, which has a history of mounting coups to defend secularism although it has not seized power directly since 1980. His conservative religious vision for Turkey’s future has also alienated many ordinary citizens who accuse him of authoritarianism. Police used heavy force in 2013 to suppress mass protest demanding more freedom. However, he also commands the admiration and loyalty of millions of Turks, particularly for restoring order to an economy once beset by regular crises. Living standards have risen steadily under his rule, and while the economy has hit serious problems in recent years, it grew a greater-than-expected 4.8 percent year-on-year in the first quarter. Still, the violence is likely to hit a tourism industry already suffering from the bombings and a row with Russia that had appeared to have been settled, and business confidence is also vulnerable. SMART PHONE ADDRESS In a night that sometimes verged on the bizarre, Erdogan frequently took to social media, even though he is an avowed enemy of the technology when his opponents use it and frequently targets Twitter and Facebook. Erdogan addressed the nation via a video calling service, appearing on the smart phone of a CNN Turk reporter who held it up to a studio camera so viewers to the

network could see him. He said the “parallel structure” was behind the coup attempt -- his shorthand for followers of Fethullah Gulen, a Muslim cleric whom he has repeatedly accused of trying to foment an uprising in the military, media and judiciary. Gulen, who lives in self-imposed exile in the United States, once supported Erdogan but became a nemesis. He denied accusations he played a role in the attempted coup and said he condemned in the strongest terms the action. “As someone who suffered under multiple military coups during the past five decades, it is especially insulting to be accused of having any link to such an attempt. I categorically deny such accusations,” Gulen said in a statement. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said the United States had not received any request to extradite Gulen. The purge appeared to go beyond the military. Citing a decision by the High Council of Judges and Prosecutors, broadcaster NTV reported that authorities had removed 2,745 judges from duty. SOLDIERS SURRENDER Gunfire and explosions had rocked both Istanbul and Ankara through the night after soldiers took up positions in both cities and ordered state television to read out a statement declaring they had taken power. However, by dawn the noise of fighting had died down considerably. About 50 soldiers involved in the coup surrendered on one of the bridges across the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul after dawn on Saturday, abandoning their tanks with their hands raised in the air. Reuters witnesses saw government supporters attack the pro-coup soldiers

LAWMAKERS IN HIDING The coup began with warplanes and helicopters roaring over Ankara and troops moving in to seal off the bridges over the Bosphorus that links Europe and Asia in Istanbul. Turkish maritime authorities reopened the Bosphorus to transiting tankers after shutting the major trade route from the Black Sea to the Aegean for several hours for security and safety reasons. In the early hours of Saturday, lawmakers were hiding in shelters inside the parliament building, which was being fired on by tanks. An opposition deputy told Reuters parliament was hit three times and that people had been wounded. A senior Turkish official said later on Saturday attacks on the parliament had “largely stopped”. A Turkish military commander also said fighter jets had shot down a helicopter used by the coup plotters over Ankara. Momentum turned against the coup plotters as the night wore on. Crowds defied orders to stay indoors, gathering at major squares in Istanbul and Ankara, waving flags and chanting. “We have a prime minister, we have a chief of command, we’re not going to leave this country to degenerates,” shouted one man, as groups of government supporters climbed onto a tank near Ataturk airport. Kerry said he phoned the Turkish foreign minister and underlined “absolute support for Turkey’s democratically elected, civilian government and democratic institutions”. European Council President Donald Tusk called for a swift return to Turkey’s constitutional order, saying tensions there could not be resolved by guns. Erdogan has had often prickly relations with the EU, which worried about some of his actions including raids on Turkish media. French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said Paris “hopes that Turkish democracy will emerge reinforced by this test and that fundamental liberties will be fully respected”.

LAHoRe, JULy 16 (ReUTeRS): Pakistani social media star Qandeel Baloch was allegedly strangled by her brother in what appears to be an “honour killing”, police said on Saturday, shocking the south Asian nation where she divided opinion. Baloch’s raunchy social media photos challenged social norms in Pakistan, a deeply conservative Muslim country where women are often repressed by their family or the community. Baloch received multiple death threats and suffered frequent misogynist abuse, but continued posting provocative pictures and videos. In Facebook posts, she spoke of trying to change “the typical orthodox mindset” of people in Pakistan. Punjab Police spokeswoman Nabeela Ghazanfar told Reuters Baloch, real name Fauzia Azeem, was killed in her family home on the outskirts of Multan, a large city in the Punjab province. “Her father Azeem informed the police that his son Waseem has strangled Qandeel,” Ghazanfar said. “Apparently, it is an honour killing but further investigations will reveal the real motives behind this murder.” Baloch had struggled to reconcile her family’s conservative values with her social media stunts, including a selfie with a famous Muslim cleric that led to widespread condemnation from powerful religious figures. CRICKET STRIPTEASE Baloch has been described as Pakistan’s Kim Kardashian and had built a modelling career on the back of her social media fame. She recently also appeared in a music video, gyrating bare legged to an Urdu-language song in high-heels and a see-through top. In May, Baloch offered to strip if the wildly-popular Pakistani cricket team beat arch-rival India. When they lost, she berated the Pakistani cricketers and posted a video in which she danced for the Indian team wearing a bikini. After her death, #QandeelBaloch began trending on Twitter in Pakistan, with many people offering support for her efforts to make Pakistan a more liberal society for women. Others, however, could not hide their delight that she had been silenced.

Hypertension biggest global risk factor for stroke says study ToRoNTo, JULy 16 (IANS): Hypertension is the single major risk factor for stroke, which is a highly preventable medical condition globally, irrespective of age and sex, reveals a study led by an Indianorigin researcher. Stroke which is caused when poor blood flow to the brain results in cell death, is the leading cause of mortality and disability, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries. The findings showed that 47.9% of strokes were caused as a result of hypertension whereas physical inactivity caused 35.8%. “The study confirmed that hypertension is the most important modifiable risk factor in all regions and is therefore the key target in reducing the burden of stroke globally,” said Salim Yusuf, Professor at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. Poor diet and obesity caused 23.2% and 18.6 %of strokes, respectively. While smoking caused 12.4%, heart diseases was accounted for 9.1% of strokes. Diabetes resulted in 3.9% and alcohol intake in 5.8% of strokes. Stress caused 5.8% and lipids 26.8% of strokes. When combined together, the total for all ten risk factors was 90.7 per cent, which was similar in all regions, age groups and in men and women, the researchers said.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT & GRATITUDE The Organising Committee of the Funeral Program of His Excellency Late. Yaruiwo, Isak Chishi Swu, would like to thank and acknowledge all the dignitaries, organisations, groups and individuals with heartfelt gratitude and appreciation:

Baloch had travelled to Karachi, Pakistan’s biggest city, due to security fears. Baloch’s death sparked an outpouring of grief on Twitter and other social media websites and reignited a debate about honour killings in Pakistan. More than 500 people - almost all women - die in Pakistan each year in such killings, usually carried out by members of the victim’s family meting out punishment for bringing “shame” on the community.

“The wider reach confirms the 10 modifiable risk factors associated with 90% of stroke cases in all major regions of the world, young and older and in men and women,” said Martin O’Donnell, Associate Professor at McMaster University. Further, hypertension was found as the highest reason behind strokes in Southeast Asia (59.6%), whereas in western Europe, North America and Australia it caused 38.8% of strokes. Alcohol intake was found lowest in western Europe, North America, Australia but at 10.4% and 10.7% it was highest in Africa and south Asia, respectively. Physical inactivity was found as the highest reason of strokes in China. In addition, ischaemic stroke -caused by blood clots -- accounted for 85% of strokes and haemorrhagic stroke -- bleeding in the brain -- accounted for 15% of strokes, was found as the two major types of strokes. “The study included better health education, more affordable healthy food, avoidance of tobacco and more affordable medication for hypertension and dyslipidaemia -- abnormal amount of lipids in the blood -- as global population-level interventions to reduce stroke,” Yusuf added. Governments, health organisations, and individuals should proactively reduce the global burden of stroke, said the paper published in The Lancet.

The Stand of NSCN (IM) on the National Principle

T

he hard reality is that everything comes from the principle and that nothing stands when the principle is murdered. The Naga nation is in the Naga national principle as the oak tree is in the acorn. After the failure and betrayal of NNC to the cause, the Naga people were left without a political organization to guide and lead the people in their national movement. People without their national organization are just a group of individuals living together without any orientation to a common future. Our national political principle has to be defended at all costs if we are to stay alive as a free people. So the question arises who will go and fight for the people and advocate for their cause? People as individuals however strong and wise they may be can never save a nation. It will be saved only through a mandated national organization. Out of such circumstances and historical necessity the competent authorities convened a national assembly and it unanimously approved the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN) on January 31, 1980, at Tonu, which was formed in the national workers meeting at Nokba village. NSCN is not a faction as alleged by some people from some quarters. No one should doubt about the legitimacy of NSCN as the one and only authentic political organization of the Naga people. It is built upon the solid ground of Naga national principle. It is undoubtedly a principle-based organization that has passed through many acid tests of tri-

Badminton C'ship at Mon Mon, July 16 (DIPR): The inaugural programme of Mon District Open Badminton Championship cum Selection was held on July 15 with Advisor DUDA, N. Thongwang as the chief guest. N. Thongwang in his address appreciated the Mon District Badminton Association (MBDA) for organising the championship aimed at encouraging the youth of Mon district. He reminded the participants that there is no easy formula to success in sports and that one can succeed only through long term dedication and determination, which in essence is the spirit of sportsmanship. Only through such focus the people of Mon can build a career in the field of sports, he said while adding that it should not only be confined to the district but should extend beyond. An exhibition match was played between VIPs and MDBA where the chief guest also participated along with DC Mon, W. Honje Konyak and Rev. Methjin, Pastor Sangtam Baptist Church, Mon.

Kumble making us comfortable in our roles, responsibilities: Rahul St. KIttS, July 16 (IanS): After a consistent performance in the practice games in the run up to the first Test against the West Indies starting July 21, India’s batsman Lokesh Rahul praised head coach Anil Kumble for making the squad feel comfortable in their respective roles and responsibilities. In the second and final practice game against West Indies Board President's XI here, Rahul was retired not out on 64 after his impressive 51 in the first warm up game. WIBP's XI ended play on day two at 26/1 in the second innings and trail by 158 runs after India were bundled out for 364 in the first innings, with skipper Virat Kohli (51) and Ravindra Jadeja (56) scoring halfcenturies each. “He (Kumble) has always played his cricket with aggressive intent. As a person too, he is a very aggressive personality. To have someone like him, someone who has played in the West Indies and performed very well, to get his feedback about conditions, it is very valuable for us,” Rahul told reporters at the end of the second day’s play. "He (Kumble) is doing a wonderful job and has made us all very comfortable in our roles and responsibilities. We are also doing a lot of team activities. It is helping the team bond and we are enjoying each other's company. Obviously it helps to be in the West Indies. The vibe is relaxed and you want to get on the beach and enjoy. Overall, there is a great atmosphere in the dressing room.” Despite being amongst the runs lately, Rahul made it clear that he is not thinking about his selection in the first Test playing XI. "Selection is something not in my control. As players we look to prepare and if opportunity comes by, we want to do well, both for ourselves and for team. There's still a week to go before the Tests start, so in next couple of days we will know who is playing and who is not. It's not something I am worried about. What has to happen, it will happen," the 24-year-old said. "The idea was to come here early, get used to conditions. I'm really happy with the way I have batted in the last two innings. It has helped in getting used to the conditions here, and the weather is hot and humid. It is not easy to get runs out there, and I have tried to use these two innings and use the time before the Test series. I think I am prepared quite well," the Bengaluru-born added.

als and ordeals. Even after the murder of NNC the Naga people continued their struggle but under the banner of NSCN, which is now running decades. But where were those stooges of the enemies when NSCN under the leadership of Isak and Muivah fought against the enemies in the east and west shedding tears and blood? Where were they when NSCN campaigned in the international political platform for support to the cause of the Nagas covering five continents? Where were they when NSCN organized the people into a formidable political force under one banner? Where were they when NSCN and Government of India (GoI) entered into a ceasefire agreement on the basis of the declared three terms? Where were they when GoI, in response to NSCN's unwavering stand on their history, recognizes the unique history and position of the Nagas? By unique history it means - the Nagas have been a free people and they have never ever been a part of India or others either by conquest or consent. The term unique history may not be applicable to those people who have sold out their history. Where were they when NSCN and GoI mutually agreed to accept the universal principle that sovereignty lies with the people and that sovereignty of the Nagas lies with the

I

Naga people and sovereignty of India with the Indian people? Is not the recognition of our sovereign right a giant step? Do they understand the differences between shared-sovereignty of the two entities and division of autonomous power between the center and the state? One school of thought advocates for total sovereignty, which justifies absolute monarchy whereas another school of thought advocates for pluralism, which validates sharedsovereignty between two entities. People and nations today do not believe in the concept of total isolationism. They are now for the doctrine of interdependent relationship among people and nations. Coexistence of the two entities/equals is a natural as well as social necessity. Where were they when GoI recognized the sovereign right of the Nagas over their land and its resources beneath and above it? Where were they when GoI recognizes NSCN as the legitimate organization of the Naga people that represents the aspiration and the issue of the Nagas? Many things have happened in Nagalim during the leadership of NSCN. In spite of the fact, they are talking nonsense as if they are ignorant of what has happened in their own country. We suppose they were somewhere in other planets or perhaps, they are too young to understand the issue. The Nagas have a lot of reasons to thank and appreciate the present Indian leaders

who have taken bold steps vis-à-vis Indo-Naga political issue especially the honorable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, the architect of the historic `Framework of Agreement.' They are committed and prepared to work out the best possible solution that respects the right of the Nagas and guarantees the security of India. Let us not blame the Indian leaders or the Devil. They are not the roadblocks, but it is those Naga critics and traitors. It is political talks between the GoI and NSCN as two entities where Mr. R. N. Ravi, the emissary of the Prime Minister of India, represents the GoI and Mr. Th. Muivah and his team (NSCN leaders) represents the Naga people. Mr. R. N. Ravi has said that there arises no question of many negotiations and many solutions. There is only one issue, one negotiation and one solution. Therefore, government of India is talking with the NSCN as two entities. On the issue of reconciliation and unification of all groups the late honorable Chairman Mr. Isak Chishi Swu had issued a statement appealing to all without exception to forgive our past mistakes as we have forgiven them too in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. He had also appealed to them to get on board the bus of the `Framework Agreement.' If they do not come forward it is their problem. A handful reactionary elements nurture the wrong notion that rebellion against the established government is a service to the people. It is treasonous. They are making

Supremacy of Love

n search for world peace, prosperity, better international ties and relations with a mashing up of uncontrolled human strife and wartime-like milieu; terrorists and anti-human agents playing their dirty role with the breakdown of political instability all around the globe, people are confused where humanity is headed. Death, poverty and other poignant issues are not anymore new to our ears or eyes as it very less pricks our consciences. We callously ignore them with unsympathetic heart that all these things will go on as it is. In greed, lust, hate and wantonness, humanity has lost the capacity to love. The blindness of ignorance and indifference toward our fellow humans reveals the total depraved state of the fallen adamic race. There is a bankruptcy of love in this world and the question remains whether humans can do anything to recover from the fate we’ve built with our own hands. Do we pessimistically live the here and now waiting for that final glorious redemption? Or do we roll up our sleeves and do something about it? Is there a thing that the world is crying out to? The world is crying out for something greater, better and transcendent virtues. It is something that is otherworldly and can only be unpacked in the realm of deeper spiritual entity. The world is not in need of more riches, wisdom, skills, resources or power. Wealth has corroded human to imbecility, wisdom has puffed up pride in humans resulting in his own destruction, powers and resources have only built walls between human. Even after all these millen-

nia of searching and groping, humans still doesn’t come to grip with the simple fact that love is all we hunger for. As Benjamin Disraeli observed, “We are all born for love. It is the principle of existence, and its only end.” Without love, the obliteration of human race is right at the door. The feelings of insecurity, fear, distrust, temperaments, anger, revenge and un-forgiveness is wheeling the whole world into an abyss of doom and gloom. Only love can come to the rescue. Love the supreme ethic of all morality. The world is dying for love. What love are we talking here? It’s the celestial love! Human love most of times is purely selfish and i-focused. It seeks one’s own good but the divine love is what the world yearns for. The kind of love that is willing to give up and sacrifice uncompromisingly. The love that is less natural and that surpasses knowledge and faith, pure and holy blazing with the heavenly flame of doing the will of God. The world indeed exists on love. Look at a mother caring for her young ones, feeding and nurturing them to grow up to adulthood. What compels them to do that? Is that naturally inherent bequeathed by the process of time plus matter plus chance? No, it’s that of divine love. A prayer made for needy and broken world, a visit to a lonely patient, a helping hand rendered to someone in need, a word of encouragement to someone depressed and so forth. All these acts make the world a more beautiful place. And that's what make human different from animals. Once we fail to love, we reduce ourselves down to a baser lower primate

instinct animal. Love looks through colors, race, ethnicity, tribes, languages, groups and is not limited by walls of insincerity and uncouth mindset. It always travels beyond its intent destinations. It walks the second mile of rendering service. Love gives without setting boundaries. It is always cheerful in the happiness of others. Philosopher Erich Fromm writes, “Love is the most powerful striving in man. It is the most fundamental passion, it is the force which keeps the human race together, the clan, the family, society. The failure to achieve it means insanity or destruction-self-destruction or the destruction of others. Without love, humanity could not exist for a day.” What a statement in the context of all the looming dangers of unending conflicts and battle in and around us! The vacuum devoid of love within human hearts points to the fact that love is what human most need. Even the famed atheist writer Bertrand Russell confessed, “In the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined.” The world today is in dire need of divine love. The world reconciling itself with the God of heaven through the person of Love will release the oil of healing in this world. The touch from heaven upon the earth will be felt once the God-incarnate Son inhabits the populaces with his supernatural glory and grace. So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love (1 Corinthians 13:13). Shalom to all the world! Vebu Khamo, Bible Student.

a paper tiger out of a rat so that revolutionary patriots are intimidated. What absurdity! They are illegitimate child of the enemies of the Naga people. Our people know that they are being paid and guarded by the hostile agency and forces. They have deviously stated that the taxation system of the government is a 'looting machine.' Be it informed that they are false preachers who are out there to poison the mind of the people in the sweet name of democracy and freedom of speech. Even if they keep preaching against the government, we believe every sensible Naga understands the fact that taxation is the bloodline of all governments on earth. Every citizen is duty-bound to pay taxes to the government. Governments by law collect taxes, direct or indirect, from all goods, properties, institutions, land, water and everything, even a needle. If anyone defies payment of taxes to the government he is committing a great sin against the state. It is nothing but an attempt to pull back the wheels of history. In fact, NSCN has been running the legitimate national government of the Naga people since day one with taxes from the people. People are our political as well as economic banks. However, extortion and illegal taxations being collected by illegal organizations and business mafias in the stolen name of the people and revolution has to be combatted and dealt with firmly by the government. An appeal

hrough this column, I would to draw the kind attention of Irrigation and Flood Control Department, as to what are the criteria for the selection of beneficiaries for minor irrigation programmes/projects with respect to construction of paddy field irrigation, especially under Dimapur district. As we all are aware that Dimapur district is inhabited by farmers from different Naga communities and have applied to the concern department, to take up minor irrigation programme/project in their respective paddy field. It is a fact that the concern department cannot carried out minor irrigation project in all the paddy field, who had applied for it. At the same time, it is sad to know that all the beneficiaries for minor irrigation projects/programmes in Dimapur district under Irrigation and Flood Control department for the Financial Year (FY) 2015-2016 has been allocated to a particular community, which is a form of nepotism, while the rest of the genuine farmers from other Naga communities are left out and not selected as beneficiaries. So one is left to wonder, whether to avail the schemes of minor irrigation projects/programmes under Dimapur district, one has to belong to a certain community. I would also like to request to the leaders of Against Corruption and Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) movement to take up the issue and file a Right To information (RTI) application with regard to it. Lastly I would also like to humbly appeal to the Irrigation and Flood Control department to published the name of all the beneficiaries for minor irrigation projects for the FY 2015-2016 under Dimapur district in local newspapers at the earliest for the sake of transparency. he 12th Session of NLA (Nagaland Legislative assembly) which was held from 12-14 July 2016 in Kohima will forever go down in history of Nagaland as the most unethical, painful and ugly act of betrayal for the surviving Ex Interim body members(ExIBM’s) by the current NFP government under the leadership of T.R Zeliang. The Bill known as the Nagaland salaries, allowances and other facilities of the Chief Minister, other ministers, speakers, leader of opposition, deputy speaker, other members of NLA, parliamentary secretaries and pension for the ex-MLAs, Fifth Amendment Bill 2016, in short known as the Nagaland salaries Bill 2016, which was passed in 14th July 2016, increased the salaries and pension of chief minister, other ministers, speakers, leader of opposition, deputy speaker, their members of the Nagaland legislative assembly/parliamentary secretaries and exmembers but the pension of Eight surviving IBM’s who also come under ex-members were withheld from increment. The Nagaland salaries Bill 2016 has clearly isolated the surviving interim body members and made them forfeit the right due to them. Truly the Nagaland Salary Bill 2016 is a bill of Betrayal. It must have been a heart breaking news for the surviving Interim body members to learn that all surviving Ex MLA’s pension were to be increased from 25,000 to 50,000 but the ExIBM’s pension amount were to remained the same without any increment. The reason for the non increment of the surviving Ex IBMS Pension appeared on Nagaland post dated Thursday the 14th July on page 5, under the heading “Two bills likely to be passed Today”, where the NLA speaker Chotisuh Sazo casually mentioned that the ex IBMs pension would not be raised because it was raised two years ago. He is not even sure if there are six or seven IBM’s alive. First there are seven surviving Interim body member. For the kind information of the public and the NLA speaker the Name of the seven surviving Interim body member in alphabetical order are Hepong Phom, Lothi Rengma (apologies if spelled wrong), Dr. S.C. Jamir, Tokheho Sema, T. Kikon, Kophen Yimchunger (apologies if

spelled wrong), Louchakai Kuki (apologies if spelled wrong). Secondly, our NLA speaker must know that the pension of the surviving Ex IBM’s which was raised two years in Dec 2013 from 25,000 to 50,000 was done on special case in commemoration of 50 Years of Statehood. Truth be told the Surviving Ex IBM’s (Excluding Dr. S.C. Jamir) had to literally beg the State government to raise their pension from Rs25000 toRs50000 during the 50th Anniversary of Nagaland statehood through a memorandum submitted to former Chief minister and the Governor of Nagaland. I am sure the speaker and the present chief minster know this fact well. The state Government never came forward with the offer to raise their pension of ExIBM’s, the ExIBM’s went asking and begging for it. Therefore the increment of Rs25,000 done two years ago for the surviving Interim body members do not in any way disqualify them from receiving the Rs 25000 increment as per the Nagaland salaries Bill 2016. Therefore the Speaker’s lame excuse that the Surviving Interim body members do not qualify for the Rs.25,000 pension increment as per the Nagaland salary Bill 2016 is absolute nonsense. The Surviving Interim body members have the full right to Rs.25000 increments. It’s a shame to know that Nagaland Sate could be the only state in the whole world where the state founders have to beg for their pension increment. What a great example of Christian State. Bravo NPF government. The Nagaland Legislative assembly deciding not to raise the pension the pension of the ExIBM is liken to a group of villager’s butchering a pig. When distributing the meat the village youths tells the village founders that they won’t get their share of meat because two year back they received their share of meat. If we cannot imagine such thing happening In a village. How can such thing happen in a Christian State Assembly where the all legislators are educated? The Interim body members (IBM) were the founders of Nagaland State. There were more than 40 IBM’s before the Nagaland became a State. Some were elected in 1961 some in 1962. P. Shilu Ao, Kheloshe Sema and Dr. Imkongleba Ao are few of the popu-

larly know IBMs. The Interim body members suffered untold persecution from the undergrounds. Some were even shot death like Dr. Imkongleba Ao and Buthing Phom. Out of more than 40 IBM’s today there are only seven alive. Ex IBM’s are also considered as Ex MLA. It is because of the Scarifies made by the IBM’s today we have a State called Nagaland. There would have been no Governor/Chief Minster/speaker/MLA/Minister/ Chief Secretary/Secretary/Deputy speaker, not even single Govt departments. All the Government employees from the highest position to the work charge employees owe their regard to God for the sacrifices of Interim body members. Some of the master piece work of the ExIBms are the enactment of Article 371 A, the practice of Naga costumery rights and Nagaland being under external affairs. One cannot even imagine that today these surviving Ex IBMs are denied the right for their pension enhancement after sacrificing so much for Statehood. The same Legislative assembly which the Ex IBMs scarified their lives to establish betrays them in the most inhuman way as possible. The Nagaland salary Bill 2016 which was passed clearly shows that the current NPF government and its legislators have no regards for the surviving seven Ex IBM’s. The NPF government has shown its true color. If the current NFP government has no regard and treats their fellow senior colleges ( ExIBM’s) with no respect who gave everything for the founding of statehood, how do you think the current NPF government will treat the ordinary public like us? The Nagaland salaries Bill 2016 is pregnant with a cursed. Whoever benefits from this bill is cursed too. The amount of pain and disrespect mended to the IBM’s will translated to curse. The surviving ExIBM’s are very old and may not be in position (Physically incapable) to fight for their right. But the Lord will avenge on their behalf. No Bill should treat people unequally. Nagaland State a Christian Sate should know best. The Governor of Nagaland should not give his assent to the Nagaland salaries Bill 2016 even if passed by the State legislative Assembly. I believe the Governor being a senior and a wise citizen would understand

and see the injustice done to the seven Ex IBMs. The Governor should send the Bill back for reconsideration and include the Eight Surviving Interim body members as benifisheris too. If our Nagaland State legislators has even an ounce of respect for the surviving and non-surviving Interim Body members and If Nagaland state would hate to be referred by the world as the only state which has no regard for their state founder. It must reconsider the Nagaland salaries Bill 2016. A new amendment should be added where the Surviving ExIBM’s Pension is increased by Rs 25,000/- just as the other Ex MLA’s been increased by Rs 25,000/. There are “only seven” not “seven hundred” Surviving Interim body member. Why can’t Nagaland state provide the pension enchainment for just seven Surviving Interim Body Members? What has the State government given the ExIBM’s other than their pension? Now even this pension enhancement is been denied to them. This is unbelievable. It is sad to see that the Ex IBM’s had to live to see this day of betrayal. The curse of sending the seven surviving Interim body members to grave in sorrow and betrayal will be unbearable. I pray the Governor and the state legislators would reconsider the Nagaland salaries Bill Fifth Amendment 2016. I hope the State government would restore the smiles on the old wrinkled faces of the surviving ExIBM’s. The legislators of NAGALAND should never forget the Ex IBM’s (living and the dead) who planted the tree (Nagaland Statehood) from which today were all enjoying its fruits in abundance. Refusing to increase their pension would be like eating the fruit planted by Ex IBMS’s and spiting on their faces with the waste. Today while hundreds of surviving Ex MLA’s will be raising their glasses to celebrate their pension enhancement, the eight surviving ExIBMs will be going to bed with a knife stabbed to their heart, hoping and praying to God that someone somewhere might understand their pain and make things right. What is becoming of my beloved Nagaland? Is there no decency left in our Naga Legislators? Imlisanen Phom, Dimapur

Tennis superstars and the Olympics Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray care about Olympic medals When Roger Federer's gesture touched Sania Mirza's heart

C M Y K

London, JuLy 16 (AP): Unlike their counterparts in golf, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal all have participated in the Summer Games in the past, all own a medal, and all talk about that event's importance to their sport every four years -- even if it already has four Grand Slam tournaments every year. Consider what Britain's Murray said when he was asked about Brazil the day after winning Wimbledon for the second time. "I've loved being in the two Olympics that I've been at," said the No. 2-ranked Murray, who won a gold in singles at the 2012 London Games. "Rio is obviously a big, big goal of mine, and hopefully I can perform well there." The No. 1-ranked Djokovic won a singles bronze for Serbia at the 2008 Beijing Games, then came up just short of a

medal four years ago. No. 3 Federer won a gold for Switzerland in doubles with Stan Wawrinka eight years ago, and a silver in singles four years ago. No. 4 Nadal won a singles gold for Spain in Beijing, missed London because he was hurt, and appealed to the International Tennis Federation to allow him to compete in Rio after he failed to fulfill Davis Cup commitments because of injuries. Even if this quartet owns a combined 46 Grand Slam titles, the Olympics still matter to them. Much will be made of the contrast between this group's interest in the Summer Games and what happened in golf, which will be missing Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy in Rio. "Olympic Games are the most renowned and most prominent sports

Before Rio, Paes-Bopanna guide India to World group playoff

CHAndIgArH, JuLy 16 (IAnS): Rio-bound doubles duo of Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna defeated South Korean pair of Hong Chung and Seong Chan Hong 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 as the hosts took an unassailable 3-0 lead in the Asia/Oceania Group 1 Davis Cup tie here on Saturday. Both Paes and Bopanna dominated the proceedings at the Chandigarh Club against the Koreans to help India qualify for World Group play-offs. Earlier, Saketh Myneni and Ramkumar Ramanathan overcame tough conditions and difficult opponents to win their respective singles matches and hand India a comfortable 2-0 lead on the opening day here on Friday. On Saturday, Paes and Bopanna gained valuable match practice before pairing up for the Rio Olympics next month. In a match that lasted an hour and 40 minutes, Bopanna's big serving was put to good use with 12 aces coming between the Indian pairing. Despite managing to convert only four of the 20 break points chances, the Indian duo edged past the Koreans with ease. But both Paes and Bopanna will be wary of the poor conversion rate, which may affect their prospects in Rio. On the other hand, the visitors had six break point chances but could only convert once in the third set, as incidentally all the chances came in the final set. Leander, in the process, has equalled tennis legend Nicola Pietrangeli's record of 42 doubles wins in Davis Cup history. The World Group playoff tie will be played in September.

event in the history of sport. No question about it. There is no bigger sports event than Olympic Games," Djokovic said. "For me, as a professional athlete, it's a huge honor to be part of it." Here are some things to know about tennis at the Rio Olympics: WHO'S MISSING There are some noteworthy players who won't be there: six of the top 20 men in this week's ATP rankings. That includes Wimbledon runner-up Milos Raonic of Canada; the top American man, John Isner; Australia's best two tennis players, Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic; and Dominic Thiem, who would have given Austria a chance at a medal.

mixed doubles until everyone is in Rio. That's because the sign-in happens there. It's limited to 16 teams, and the possibilities are intriguing. The expectation is that, if he's healthy, Federer will team with Martina Hingis. And Nadal -- if healthy -will partner French Open champion Garbine Muguruza. The bad news: It sounds as if the Williams sisters will not enter that event.

AGE IS JUST A NUMBER If 34-year-old Serena Williams or 36-year-old Venus Williams wins a gold medal, either would be the third-oldest woman to collect an Olympic title in tennis. Winifred McNair was 43 when she won women's doubles for Britain all the way back in 1920, and Hazel Wightman was 37 when she MIXING IT UP won the same event for the No one will know ex- U.S. four years later. Each actly who is competing in Williams already owns

four medals (all gold), so adding two more -- they're both entered in singles and doubles -- would put either in first place for most tennis medals in Olympic history. Kathleen McKane won five medals (one gold) in the 1920s. MOST APPEARANCES India's Leander Paes will be appearing in his record-extending seventh Olympic tennis competition, pairing in men's doubles with Rohan Bopanna. Paes owns one medal, a bronze in singles at the 1996 Atlanta Games. In Grand Slam action, he has won eight titles in men's doubles, and another 10 in mixed doubles. BACK-TO-BACK? No player has won two consecutive gold medals in singles. Murray and Serena Williams will try to change that this time.

nEW dELHI, JuLy 16 (PTI): He is inarguably the greatest tennis player of all time but what makes Roger Federer, a revered sportsperson, a legend is his "warmth and care" for colleagues, which even touched Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza's life on a couple of occasions. In her autobiography 'Ace against Odds', Mirza mentions about two separate incidents when the 17-time Grand Slam singles champion inquired about her well-being after she was dragged into unnecessary controversies, and a hilarious episode involving her best friend and the Swiss. In 2008, a case was registered against Sania for allegedly disrespecting Indian national flag with her feet up in the players' box while watching teammate Rohan Bopanna play. Sania recalls in her book: "When the case was filed against me for alleged disrespect to the national flag, Roger Federer was among first to inquire about the situation and welfare when I reached Melbourne for the Australian Open." That was not the only time Federer inquired about Sania's well-being, as he did the same after the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai. Sania writes: "He (Federer) also surprised me many months later with a message of concern when Mumbai was tragically struck by terrorist attacks on November 26, 2008. I think this is what makes Roger very, very special because apart from being a legend, a genius and the greatest ever exponent of his craft, he remains warm, caring, accessible, untouched by fame, and a thorough gentleman." While these were a couple of touching gestures, there was a hilarious incident which indirectly involved Federer. During the 2007 Wimbledon, Sania was joined by her childhood friend Rucha Naik and a funny incident took place. Sania fondly recalls that in her book. "My best friend from school, Rucha Naik, had joined me for the grass court

Leicester City's N'Golo Kante moves to Chelsea

N'Golo Kante, the Leicester City midfielder, has moved to Chelsea following the signing of a fiveyear deal with the Blues.

London, JuLy 16 (AgEnCIES): Chelsea has completed the signing of N'Golo Kante from Premier League champions Leicester City on a fiveyear contract. Leicester offered Kante a "substantially improved, long-term contract" earlier in the close season but, having accepted the player's desire to leave the King Power Stadium, it has agreed to a clubrecord sale - reported to be in the region of £32million. Kante was a largely unheralded signing from Caen last season but proved to be a star performer as Claudio Ranieri's men completed a remarkable run to the title and won a place in the PFA Team of the Year. The 25-year-old also secured his international breakthrough with France and made four appearances at Euro 2016 for the host na-

tion, which was beaten 1-0 by Portugal in last weekend's final. Kante becomes Chelsea's second major closeseason-season signing following Belgium forward Michy Batshuayi's arrival from Marseille and is set to be a key pillar of new boss Antonio Conte's rebuilding job at Chelsea. "I am so happy to have signed for one of the biggest clubs in Europe," Kante told Chelsea's official website. "It's a dream come true for me. "The opportunity to work with Antonio Conte, a brilliant coach, and

some of the best players in the world was simply too good to turn down. My first season in English football was very special and now I hope to go on to achieve even more during my time as a Chelsea player. I am looking forward to meeting up with my new teammates and helping the club achieve a lot of success." Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo added: "N'Golo is a fantastic signing ahead of the new season and we are delighted to have been able to bring such a talented player to the club.

"He is a perfect fit in terms of Antonio Conte's philosophies and the style of football he wants to play. For a player of his age he has already built up a wealth of experience and his exceptional quality will without doubt be a great addition to the team." The Stamford Bridge outfit endured a torrid Premier League title defence last season, with defeat to Leicester in December costing Jose Mourinho his job before interim manager Guus Hiddink oversaw a recovery of sorts to finish 10th. Speaking at his first news conference as Chelsea boss on Thursday, Conte suggested signings such as Kante were imminent in order to bolster his side's prospects of a return to the upper reaches of the table. "I am sure that in the coming days we can reach our target to reinforce the team, to go closer to the other teams that now seem to stay higher in the table compared to Chelsea," he said. "In the coming days, we can buy one, two, three players. Players that can reinforce us for the season as it will be very, very tough."

season in England and it was fun to have her around. She was graduating with a degree in fashion marketing from the University of Lancaster. Rucha was no sports enthusiast and had very little interest or knowledge of tennis, but she was a friend, I loved and cared for. Perhaps that's why she is one of my best friends. "I cannot forget the first time she came into the Players' Lounge at the Wimbledon. Roger Federer walked upto our table at some point and joked with me. "What is this guy's name and who does he think he is?" Rucha said rather indignantly as soon as Roger had left the table," Sania recollects. "'Oh, he is just a nice guy who hangs around here at tournaments and plays a bit of tennis, I said wickedly,'" says Sania remembering the incident.

Manipur girls face Haryana in Junior National Football Championships CuTTACk, JuLy 16 (IAnS): Defending champions Manipur will aim to lift the silverware when they take on Haryana in the final of the Junior Girls National Football Championships at the Barabati Stadium here on Sunday. The Manipur girls, under coach Chaoba Devi, have bamboozled every opponent having inundated them with goals. They possess an intimidating attacking lineup comprising of Ratanbala Devi, Hemolata Devi and Daya Devi -- who have registered not less than 26 goals in the quarter-final stage and six goals against Tamil Nadu in the semi-final. On the other hand, the Haryana girls have emphasised on their sharp counter-attacking ability to churn out results. The frontline attackers, Nisha and Renu, have always coordinated well to wreck the rivals. "Although we have performed meticulously till now, the final will be a different ball game altogether. We have to start from scratch. It’s not about feats. It's about representing our state. We will give our best," Chaoba Devi said. " It's true that we have scored goals aplenty but Haryana have overwhelmed the home team in the semi-final, an astounding feat indeed. They are a very good team," she added. Having reached the final, Haryana coach Anil Dhull appeared ecstatic. "The entire credit goes to the girls. They have shown their character to garner the results," Dhull said. On being asked whether his team will start as the underdogs against mighty Manipur in the final, he stated, "Manipur have harried whomsoever they have faced in the tournament so far. But their defence hasn’t been tested till now. Once we find a crack in between, it might pose a threat to them." Chaoba might feel a sense of relief as she has an almost 100 percent fit team at her disposal whereas Haryana’s Samiksha still has a niggle. Shreya, the seasoned custodian, is also nursing a groin injury. Although there will be only one winner in the final, all these girls would go back to their home with a lot of learning experience which would provide an added boost to their future career.

Sachin wishes good luck to Vijender for title fight MuMbAI, JuLy 16 (IAnS): Legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar wished good luck to India's star boxer Vijender Singh who will fight for the WBO Asia Pacific super middleweight title against Australia's Kerry Hope here on Saturday. Vijender, who won his first six professional bouts outside India, will fight for the first time in front of his home fans in New Delhi. The 43-year-old former India batsman, besides wishing the 2008 Olympic Games bronze medallist boxer, also said he is sure the 30-year-old Delhi lad will make the nation proud by winning the bout. "Wishing all the very best to @boxervijender. You will surely make our nation proud. #RingKaKing," Tendulkar tweeted on Saturday. Vijender will face an opponent who has an experience of 30 bouts, of which he has won 23, out of which two were by knock-outs. The Beijing Olympics bronze medallist has won all his six fights so far, but Hope

has more experience and is a better calibre fighter than Vijender's previous opponents. The 34-year-old has been a professional boxer for 12 years and has been involved in 30 fights over that period with a record of 23-7. That, along with the fact that he is a left-hander -- a distinct advantage in most sports -- makes the Australian of Welsh origin a dangerous opponent.
