KU questions Kiren Rijiju on ‘rehabilitation package’
C M Y K
DiMAPuR, JuNe 16 (MexN): The Konyak Union (KU) today issued a statement questioning the Union Minister of State for Home, Kiren Rijiju’s recent statements regarding a “rehabilitation package” for NSCN (K) cadres if they surrender. The KU wondered how the Union Minister could “settle the 7 decade old Naga struggles through a so called rehabilitation package?” “Such undermining expression of thought would only create more confusion and further provocation,” the KU stated, while urging both the Indian and Mayanmar governments to “sincerely understand the cultural, social, political and territorial sentiments & aspiration of the Nagas.” It further refuted the Minister’s statement that late NSCN (K) Chairman, SS Khaplang had passed away at Kachin State, Myanmar. “Such unfounded statement is indeed a shocker as to how the Union Home Minister could be so ignorant about the territorial extension and existence of its immediate neighbour,” it said. The KU noted that “Kachin is a tribe/state that occupies the North-eastern frontier of Myanmar. It shares its Western boundaries with the Nagas who occupies the North-western frontier under the Union of Myanmar. Since time immemorial, Kachin & Nagas had co-existed as a good neighbour hence there exist no territorial confusion but mutual respects for each others’ sentiments, aspiration and determination.” Taka, it informed is a Naga town under Sagaing Division “which is undeniable Naga Territory since time immemorial.” “It can never be alienated through any external force. Hence, the Konyak Union appeals all concerned to refrain from such unfounded remarks,” the KU said. The KU also ridiculed certain sections of the national media for terming the Nagaland Chief Minister’s condolence over the death of SS Khaplang as a “shocker.” “In Nagaland, it is the people & the State Government that controls & subdues many form of violence. Hence, it is important for a responsible leader to express its grief during such hour. Such act of understandable relation was adhered & executed by the successive Chief Ministers of Nagaland where lesser bloodshed & violence had occurred,” the KU said.

The Dimapur-Kohima NH29 four-lane road project has encountered a roadblock in the form of suspected “taxation” demands from a Naga political group, just months after it began its first phase of road cutting. According to reports, earth cutting of the NH 29 between Phiphema and Patkai Bridge came to an abrupt halt since Thursday evening after some youth reportedly from a Naga political group appeared on the scene and ordered the earth cutting to be immediately stopped. National Highway 29 from Kohima to Dimapur under SARDP-NE Phase 'A' four- lane, was allotted to ECI Engineering and Construction Company Ltd and Matyas-Gayatri Company under the supervision of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL). The stretch of the NH-29 between Patkai Bridge and Phiphema which is around 30 kilometers was allot-

ted to ECI Engineering and Construction Company Ltd, which in turn had sublet the work to the contractors belonging to the Nagaland Constructors and Suppliers Union (NCSU). Sources engaged in work at the NH-29 said some persons identifying themselves as from the NSCN (IM) came on Thursday around 3:30 pm and ordered them to stop work until further orders from the authorities. After the directive, all work along
the highway came to a grinding halt fearing the worst, it was learnt. On Friday, the stretch of NH-29 between Patkai Bridge and Phiphema bore the same deserted look as the road construction workers awaited further directives for work to commence. An official of the NCSU on condition of anonymity informed that the issue may be related to demand of tax by the particular Naga political group.
“They are reportedly insisting some amount for the particular stretch of work which we have taken up,” the NCSU official revealed, who however had no idea how much the amount was. He stated that as far as the NCSU (which is a second party to the road project) was concerned, they have not received any demands and therefore the demand may have been directed to ECI. The NCSU official also pointed out that they were
still to receive any bill from the concerned authority for the work which is being carried out. Despite the alleged demand, the NCSU official said they were determined to continue the earth cutting from Saturday onwards. A work force of around 80 along with 11 earth moving machines, 18 dumpers, 4 JCBs and other machineries are engaged in the road cutting between Patkai Bridge and Phiphema. There have also been reports, though unconfirmed, that monetary demands have been made to MatyasGayatri as well, which looks after the stretch of highway between Phiphema and Kohima. It may be mentioned that the foundation stone for the 4-lane Dimapur-Kohima highway project for Nagaland was laid by Union Minister for Transport, Highways and Shipping, Nitin Gadkari on November 3, 2015 near Patkai Bridge junction more than a decade after former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee had announced the project.
New Delhi, JuNe 16 (PTi): The government on Friday announced its decision making the Aadhaar card mandatory for opening bank accounts and conducting financial transactions of Rs 50,000 and above. Moreover, existing bank account holders have been asked to submit their Aadhaar cards issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to banks by December 31 this year, failing which banks will invalidate their accounts. The move comes days after the Supreme Court upheld the validity of an I-T Act provision making Aadhaar a must for allotment of PAN cards and for filing Income Tax returns. The apex court had granted a “partial relief” to those who do not have an Aadhaar or an Aadhaar enrolment ID, ruling that the PAN of such individuals will not be cancelled for the time being. The notification issued amending the Prevention of Money Laundering (Maintenance of Records) Rules, 2005, mandated quoting of Aadhaar along
with PAN or Form 60 by individuals, companies and partnership firms for all financial transactions of Rs 50,000 or above with effect from June 1. Post June 1, if a person does not have an Aadhaar number at the time of opening of account, then he has to furnish proof of application of enrollment for Aadhaar and submit the Aadhaar number to the bank within six months of opening of the bank account. So far, it was mandatory to provide PAN number or Form 60 to banks while opening of accounts or for high value transactions. For companies opening bank accounts, Aadhaar number of managers or employees holding an attorney to transact on the company’s behalf will have to be provided. In all other cases, identity should be verified while carrying out transaction of an amount equal to or exceeding Rs 50,000, and in any international money transfer operation. The government’s latest directive comes in the backdrop of a raging debate over Aadhaar and its “mandatory” usages.
Ukhrul Tense: NSCN (IM) cadres kill 2 civilians Domestic workers demand equality and dignity Morung Express News Ukhrul | June 16
A tense situation prevailed in Ukhrul on Friday after two persons were killed in a case of extreme high-handedness by NSCN (IM) cadres. The two deceased were identified as RomeoShally,28years,andChingripam Lungleng, 25 years – both of Khamasom village under Ukhrul district. The first of the killing occurred after Shally was picked up on June 14 morning by NSCN cadres on charges of allegedly raping a woman. Shally was severely beaten and subsequently died while in the custody of the NSCN’s Wung Tangkhul Region (WTR) office in Phungreitang, Ukhrul later that night. Reports emerging on social media pointed to Shally and the woman being in a relationship. This, however, could not be independently verified. On June 15 afternoon around 500 people gathered outside the WTR office refusing to take back the body. When Shally’s sister, who wished to see the body, was refused entry into the office, the angry mob started pelting stones. It was reported that the NSCN (IM) cadres reacted with around 10-15 rounds of gunfire. In the resultant melee, Chingripam Lungleng was shot in the chest and succumbed to death on the way to hospital. Lungleng’s family members have refused to take the body, and it continues to remain outside the WTR office at the time of filing this report. On the other hand, Shally’s body
was reportedly taken away by some villagers on Friday unbeknownst to the parents of the deceased.

Threat on journo Meanwhile, journalists in Ukhrul including the President of the Ukhrul District Working Journalists’ Association, Thotshang Shaiza, received threats from the NSCN (IM) to refrain from reporting on the incident. When contacted by The Morung Express, the UDWJA President, clearly intimidated by the incident, refused to divulge any information.
“We want fixation of wages under the Minimum Wages Act and payment on time to take care of our family members,” said domestic worker Usha Devi from Kohima today. Speaking to a huge crowd, Devi, a mother of 4, asked state legislators to address the welfare of domestic workers and ensure their dignity. She said this while sharing her experience as a domestic worker during the regional conference on ‘Decent work for domestic workers,’ held in Kohima as part of the Northeast Domestic Workers Week (June 10-16). To ensure protection of unorganized workers in Nagaland, the Ferrando Domestic Workers’ Alliance, Centre for Development Initiatives and National Domestic Workers’ Movement- Nagaland on behalf of domestic workers, submitted a memorandum to Dr TM Lotha, Advisor to Chief Minister, Labour & Employment and Skill Development. It sought inclusion of domestic workers in welfare schemes, proper functioning
NSCN (IM) expresses ‘shame and pain’ The NSCN (IM) has meanwhile expressed “shame and pain” at the ongoing situation in Ukhrul. A press note from the MIP of the NSCN (IM) informed that Kilo Kilonser, Hukavi Yepthomi convened an emergency meeting to take stock of the situation, whereby a central investigation team was set up on June 16. “Further for impartial and transparency representatives from Tangkhul Naga Long will also be included as part of the investigation team,” it informed. The NSCN (IM) appealed to the victims’ families and the public for “calm to resolve the issue amicably, so that the investigation team may smoothly perform their duties immediately.” It further assured that “reformative and stringent measures would be initiated to deter such occurrences in future.”

of the social welfare board, skill training for domestic workers and fixation of wages under Minimum Wages Act in Nagaland. The memo said most domestic workers are illiterate and come from vulnerable communities, while many are migrants or are trafficked and sold. It called for a separate state sectoral law on the land of other sectoral laws, such as building and other construction workers Act 1996 to ensure dignity and rights of domestic workers in the state. It lamented that despite Nagaland having included domestic workers under the schedule of employment and fixed minimum wages for domestic workers, the state social security boards under unorganized workers social security act 2008 has not been constituted in the state. Dr TM Lotha stated that domestic workers are a vulnerable group and hence their rights dignity and safety should be protected without any discrimination. “There should be a cordial atmosphere in the work place and cordial relationship between the employer and the employee with a view to collec-
tively promote decent work for domestic workers and to ultimately enhance the efficiency and economy of the family,” he said. Dr Lotha lamented that domestic workers in India continue to struggle for visibility and recognition due to the absence of comprehensive, uniformly applicable national legislation that guarantees fair terms of employment and decent working conditions. “Unfortunately, most of us in Nagaland are unaware of these Acts. Maybe because there are no organized, duly registered domestic workers, and most often we employ family members who are dropouts from schools and we employ them in the family and allow them to go for part time schooling and studies,” he said. Highlighting the draft policy for domestic workers the Ministry of Labour & Employment, State Labour Commissioner, L Nungshiyanger Aier said domestic workers will be included in appropriate existing labour legislations and suitable amendment will be made. He added domestic workers will have the right to register as worker with the state Labour Department, to
enhance their professional skills and employment opportunity through skill development, to fair terms of employment relating to minimum wage protection, hours of work, rest period, leave, access to social security, protection from abuse, harassment and violence etc. He was hopeful that the policy would become a reality soon. Fr. S. Charles of Development Association of Nagaland (DAN) meanwhile pointed out that in Nagaland, the issue of vulnerable children in the domestic sector is a deep concern. “The huge supply of children particularly to work as child domestic labour in homes in cities and towns in Nagaland is a gross violation of child rights. This has to be addressed at the earliest by all stakeholders concerned,” he said. He cautioned that ignoring the deprived children of today would plant seeds of a future that would be filled with inequality, injustice, unrest and violence. “Little acts of kindness and care to these little ones would make this world more humane and peaceful,” he said.
Smooth Ride for Dimapur: DMC, AOK venture to fill potholes Morung Express News Dimapur | June 16
Potholes galore, the roads of Dimapur become dust bowls during the winter and swamp land during the monsoon. ‘Smooth Ride for Dimapur’ – a mission that was sown by the Act of Kindness back in 2015 has today grown to find support in the form of the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC). The DMC in collaboration with AOK resurrected the pothole filling mission by formally launching the project in the main town area on June 16. Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, Limasunep Jamir launched the mission outside the en-

trance to Holy Cross Higher Secondary School on Friday evening. Jamir, commenting on the mission objective held that the nature of any event cannot be measured in numbers “but the intention is what matters.” Stating “Self help is the best helper,” he added, “We cannot
see tremendous change in one go. But I believe we are jumping onto something with a firm conviction.” While stating that a sense of ownership is what matters, he said, “Dimapur with all the rickety infrastructure is still our city.” He further expressed confidence that the initiative
would turn out to be a path breaking venture for the city’s road to recovery. Moa Sangtam, DMC administrator said the ‘Smooth Ride for Dimapur’ project is part of the DMC’s broader ‘A Better Dimapur’ programme launched earlier this month. “DMC is sponsoring all the materials and machinery that will go into the smoother ride initiative,” said Sangtam at the launch programme. With regard to the ‘A Better Dimapur’ programme, Sangtam said that it comprises of 3 components labelled: Greener Dimapur, Cleaner Dimapur, and A Healthy Dimapur, which have already commenced. The programme is slated to
culminate in November, to be followed up by another. Following the first phase, Sangtam said that there will be a review of the programme based on which the second phase would likely be launched by December or January. He said that at the heart of the programme is public collaboration. “We are targeting the mindset of the people. We would want the people to inculcate civic sense,” said Sangtam. “If change does not start with ‘I’ then we need to stop complaining and we need to stop expecting anything from anyone else,” was how AOK summarised the concept behind ‘Smooth Ride for Dimapur’.

an indefinite general strike from Monday in the hills encompassing Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts and the Dooars (foothills of the Himalayas covering stretches of Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar district) protesting against the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's decision to make Bengali language compulsory in staterun schools. The strike was called even as the Chief Minister assured that the new rule would not be imposed in the hill districts. In Kolkata, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee blamed intelligence failure for the fresh unrest in the hills, where the GJM sponsored shutdown entered the fifth day.
The North Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) in continuation of its ongoing protest against the alleged misrepresentation of facts organized a demonstration on Friday in front of the office of the Vice-Chancellor Prof. S.K. Srivastava and calling for his immediate resignation. “Ignoring the serious case of defrauding minutes of statutory bodies, the Vice-Chancellor disappeared from the office. Even after misinforming Government of India and
the premier university like NEHU. In continuation of NEHUTA’s call for non-cooperation, it asked for an explanation from the VC as to why such serious manipulation and acts of misleading the office of the Visitor is not to be considered a fit case for initiation of proceedings under law. The NEHUTA stated that it expected a response from the VC in a week’s time so that ‘gross acts of violation of statutory provisions to the detriment of the employees of the university’ could be redeemed in a manner of restoring propriety. In its assembly on Fri-
day, the NEHUTA cautioned that a premier university cannot become a ‘kingdom of lies’. “The NEHUTA pledges that it will do the rightful in upholding the highest standards of public morality by making an example out of VC’s white lies and will carry out a democratic path of struggle by uniting every member of the university community. Hence the NEHUTA, in upholding the highest standards of public morality categorically demands that the VC should immediately resign, as he has lost all moral and legal rights to continue in the office,” Mao said.

ence (NERCPAC 2017) today. Dr. Heptulla said the legislators, besides being the political representatives of the people, are also social reformers and social philosophers, who are mandated to articulate the grievances, hopes and aspirations of the people. As such, it is their duty to be well aware of the ground realities, so that they can voice the concerns of the people in a more effective manner. Observing that North East region, due to certain reasons, has been historically and geographically cut off from the mainland, Dr. Heptulla called for efforts to attend to connectivity-related issues. She emphasised that there should be more direct flights to North-East region from different cities of the country, which will not only lead to better connectivity but also to better prospects for tourism industry. She also highlighted the need for better roads and rail network as per the special requirements of the region. She also pointed out that the criterion of population for allocating funds by the North Eastern Council needed to be revisited as the interests of smaller States tend to be adversely affected by such an approach.

'Outsiders' can't apply for Aadhaar in Nagaland? source: Catch news
Even as the rest of the country debates if Aadhaar should become compulsory for availing government subsidies and filing income tax returns, in Nagaland, the non-indigenous population is facing a unique problem. At the centre of the problem is a state government notification that stands in the way of these residents getting an Aadhaar card. Somung, a Manipuri working for HDFC Bank in Kohima, is among the people affected by this notification. Somung went to the District Commissioner's office on Tuesday to get himself enrolled for the unique identification number. “But I was told that I cannot get myself registered in Kohima and that I should go to my hometown to get an Aadhaar,” he says. Somung is not the
only such person. Michael (name changed on request), a former journalist, too, wanted to get himself registered for a UID. He, too, like Somung, is from Manipur, albeit from a Naga tribe. Michael, too, faced the same problem: a pointblank refusal and a request to go back to the home state for getting the Aadhaar number, which will soon be mandatory for availing a host of government subsidies, since the government wants to plug leaks by linking subsidies to UIDs. Naturally, all those who have not yet registered themselves in the UIDAI database want to do so as the deadline gets closer. AADHAAR IN NAGALAND Nagaland was one of the 10 states which were covered under the National Population Register

• UIDAI Deputy Director General says does not know of any such notification in Nagaland • Nagaland government says it is trying to streamline the process scheme. It only came under the ambit of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) in November 2016. According to a report in The Morung Express, a local newspaper, the state Home department was supposed to be the nodal department to oversee Aadhaar enrolment, “with Home commissioner as the state registrar and all offices of deputy commissioners, additional deputy commissioners and SDO designated as enrolment agencies.” This was done to speed up Aadhaar enrollment as Nagaland was lagging be-
completion of the National Register of Citizens, even though the government has clarified that Aadhaar is not proof of citizenship. DIFFERING VIEWS UIDAI officials insist that the scheme entails that anybody who has the basic documents in place can get registered anywhere in the country, in states where Aadhaar registration is open. LK Pegu, the Deputy Director General of the UIDAI, says he does not know of any such notification in Nagaland, but said “it was a matter for the state”. Michael finds the Nagaland rule absurd. “What about students, and others who are working in the state? They are facing immense problems,” he says. Imchen, however, claims that the issue will be resolved soon. “We are trying to streamline the process,” he says.

7 Surprising Ways to Get More Sleep Think outside the box to reclaim your night-time rest
A

n insomniac friend unwittingly hijacked my sleep recently. I'd never had trouble staying asleep before, but my friend started texting at 2 a.m. to pass the time. I keep my mobile phone on my nightstand, so his texts disturbed me, even with the phone on vibrate--the buzz, accompanied by a lit screen, jolted me awake. Eventually, I activated a do-not-disturb setting: My phone remained blissfully silent and dark when I received unwanted texts between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m., and my sleep returned to normal. Mobile phone alerts, bathroom trips or other interruptions spoil many people's nightly rest. International guidelines suggest that adults should sleep between seven and nine hours every night, but a 2016 University of Mumbai study found that 61 per cent of Indians sleep for less than seven hours. Chronic sleep deprivation isn't just making us groggy; it can harm our health: Research shows that adults who don't sleep enough are more likely to be sedentary and obese, and are at greater risk of diabetes, heart disease, depression and common illnesses like cold. "Sleep is so important to physical and mental health," says Neil Stanley, a sleep researcher in Farnborough, England. "Anything that causes poor sleep on an every-night basis can have associations with risk factors for diabetes, obesity, depression and other problems. You have to look at things that you potentially can do to improve the situation." Fortunately, you don't have to swear off coffee, rely on sleeping pills or buy a fancy mattress to get a good night's rest. These offbeat tips may help improve the quality of your slumber:
Ditch your smartphone Studies show that mobile phone use before bedtime impacts sleep and is associated with insomnia. You're more likely to stay up too late texting, emailing or using social media, then feel drowsy the next day. A study by the Pew Research Centre, Washington DC, found that 90 per cent of 18 to 29 year olds sleep with their phone in or right next to the bed. "We know from research that using one app leads to another, so you are likely to spend more time on your mobile phone than you have intended to," says Liese Exelmans, a researcher at the School for Mass Communication Research at the University of Leuven, Belgium. "People over 60 who use their mobile phones at night have a shorter sleep duration." With age it is especially difficult to fall and stay asleep. "This is because a certain percentage of delta sleep (associated with deep sleep) drops as we age," says Dr P. P. Bose, senior consultant, department of pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine, National Heart Institute, New Delhi. Children should be extra cautious. An Indian study in Sleep Science monitoring sleep patterns among kids aged 9-14 noted that ur-
urge to urinate. "Even in people who fell asleep easily again," says Dr Philip E. V. Van Kerrebroeck, professor of urology at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, "the interruption of sleep disrupts the normal sleep patterns and can have general health consequences: high blood pressure or diabetes. And it can have an impact on the cognitive function." Nocturia isn't a disease; rather, it's a symptom of conditions like sleep apnea, male prostate problems and lower oestrogen levels in women. When you put your feet up before bedtime, it pushes the fluids that have accumulated around your ankles back into the bloodstream, allowing you to urinate out the excess fluid while you're awake. If you don't elevate your legs until you slip into bed, the excess fluid becomes urine while you sleep, leading to night-time awakenings. onsoon comes with the constant struggle to feel fresh and protect your skin and hair from the drastic and confused weather conditions but a few simple steps like carrying face wipes or washing hair twice or thrice a week can make you feel better, say experts. Donald Simrock, Lakmé Skin and Makeup expert and Sangeeta Velaskar, Vice President and Head, Medical Services and R&D, Kaya Limited, share some tips that can help breeze through the rain-induced months while keeping the skin fresh and hair strong and healthy. For skin * The one thing that is an absolute must for every person who dreams of naturally glowing skin is drinking an ample amount of water to hydrate yourself at all points of time. Also, you can opt for rose tea which is perfect to give you that natural glow and hydration. * Always carry a pack of face wipes. Keeping your face cleansed, toned and hydrated with facial wipes at regular intervals prevents your skin from clogging up in the long run and keeps you fresh all the time.

lot of Indian women want to know if their prospective partners can cook, reveals a survey. Matchmaking service www.shaadi.com conducted a survey to understand what makes women say ‘yes’ in relationships. The survey was conducted to mark the service reaching five million success stories in May. The online poll received over 6,800 responses (women – 47 per cent and men – 53 per cent) from married Indians from ages 25 to 34 years who found each other on Shaadi.com. When they were asked ‘What are the three most important questions you asked your prospective partner before saying yes?’ 36 per cent women said ‘Do you live in a nuclear or joint family?’, 30 per cent sought to know ‘Will you be supportive of my career?’, and a surprising 26 per cent asked ‘Can you cook?’. These numbers were slightly different for men. About 36 per cent asked ‘Are you willing to live with my family?’, followed by 34 per cent who asked ‘Do you
thing you probably already have on hand: a hair dryer. Reddit user Tyler Deleersnyder, also known as PartyxDirtyDan, revealed this genius hack that had Reddit users going crazy. (Try out these other genius tips to make your shoes last longer.) The technique is simple—you just need to apply heat for one minute to a section of the rubber sole. “Switch off on the areas you work on to make sure you don’t melt the glue on the outsole and upper [part of the shoe],” Deleersnyder shared. For the best results, apply heat to the same
section multiple times, but NOT for longer than a minute at a time. He also pointed out that you should avoid touching the soles of your sneakers until they are completely cool; touching them while hot could leave an imprint. This can be a tedious process, but it’s definitely more cost-effective than buying a whole new pair of sneakers. Simply point the dryer at your shoes, watch the creases disappear, and get that bounce back in your step. Inspired to spruce up all of your other shoes? This is how to clean every type of shoe that you own.
* During the rains, all your skin really needs is to breathe. The use of excessive make-up prevents that from happening. Your ultimate motto for the monsoons should be - less is more. * With the onset of the monsoons, we are all guilty of choosing foods like pakodas and bhajiyas which just add to the skincare woes! This monsoon, pledge to detoxify your skin by minimizing the fried food diet, to uncover your spotless and glowy fresh face. Eat pakodas but sweat it out. And don't forget, water is your best friend for life.
ew sneakers are great, but only when they look new. Once they start to look a little worn and the rubber soles get all squished and wrinkly, they just don’t look as great paired with your cute gym outfit that you have no intention of actually going to the gym in. (By the way, this is how you can keep your shoes stink free.) But fear not—the only thing you need to get your kicks looking (and feeling!) brand new is some-
For hair * Monsoons are notorious for itchy scalps, flaking and dandruff. Include a good anti-dandruff shampoo that is mild and also provides moisturisation at the same time. Some of the ingredients to look out for are Piroctone Olamine and Vitamin B5. * Wash your hair at least twice or thrice a week and keep the scalp dry to avoid fungal and bacterial infections. * Avoid using excessive styling products which will leave your hair looking limp and lifeless. Refrain from using heat styling tools as they drain moisture from the hair and leave them looking frizzy and lifeless.

plan to work after marriage?’, while only 19 percent asked ‘Can you cook?’. When they were asked ‘What is the first thing that attracts you to the opposite sex?’, men and women both said ‘physical appearance’ was the primary factor with 64 per cent and 53 per cent respectively. ‘Success in career’ (21 per cent) and ‘Common likes’ (23 per cent) also played an important role for women. When women were asked ‘What gave you the confidence to take the final decision?’, 56 per cent men and 72 per cent women said ‘Approval from parents’ was what helped them seal the deal. Gourav Rakshit, CEO, Shaadi. com, said in a statement: “While career and physical attributes are important, we are seeing that women are looking for a partner who will share their lives and responsibilities in every way.” “What’s also interesting is that approval from parents still plays a big role in the choice of life partners for singles. While singles have the final say in the choice of their life partners, parents are key in the decision-making process.”

OTIS REDDING: An Unfinished Life by Jonathan Gould Otis Redding couldn’t dance. He wasn’t flashy. But what his voice conveyed to listeners was an almost unparalleled connection. Gould relies on interviews with Redding’s surviving family members and exhaustive research into his early years as a performer to tell the story of the soul sensation who died at the age of 26 when his plane crashed en route to a show in Madison, Wis. THE COMPLETE STORIES by Leonora Carrington This year marks the centennial of Carrington’s birth. A Surrealist painter and fabulist, she wrote 25 fantastical and droll stories in English, Spanish and French — stories that blend the lure of a fairy tale with elements unpleasantly familiar and frightening. COCKFOSTERS: Stories by Helen Simpson Mortality and the passage of time are underlying themes in these jewels of stories by Simpson. AN OPPORTUNITY TO GROW IN LIFE We are not hysterical: 10 strong By Puru Kichu, Assistant Professor, Department of Management (BBA)
What exactly is Management about? Is it necessary only for large corporate companies? Is it required only for private enterprises or for businesses only? These are some thoughts that may cross the minds of many. However, we opine that these are only a part of the wide area of management. In this series of short papers, C-Edge College with the initiative of Management Department will draw out and illustrate the necessity and applications of management skills.
S
ir John Harvey-Jones states “Management, above everything else, is about PEOPLE. It is about the accomplishment of ends and aims by the efforts of groups of people working together. The people and their individual hopes and skills are the greatest variable and the most important one.” In fact, man is the first syllable in management. Technology makes things possible but it is the people who make it happen... Management can be said to be ‘deciding what to do and getting it done’. Success in business (Broader sense, business includes government, entrepreneurs, company, organisation, family and Churches etc) stems from good quality management decisions first of all, and then the effectiveness in implementation which depends on the skills of leadership, communication, influencing and motivation. This are the knowledge and
skills we learn by studying management degree course like BBA/MBA degree. This degree provides comprehensive understanding of all topics relating to subjects like Policy and strategy, Research methodology, financial management, Human recourses management, quantitative techniques, Business law, Production management, communication skills, cost management, Business Environment management, Income tax etc Management degree helps the student to undertake work placements and professional project. Management degree is not only book knowledge but includes seminars, presentation, reports, group decision making , examination, dissertation and group projects giving the students opportu-
nity to develop one’s team-working skills as well as one’s ability to conduct research and undertake projects independently. It equips the students to have certain level of competency which makes them different from others. Management degree in today’s competitive economy, blends of various skills like • Providing sufficient knowledge to understand the various facets of an organisation so as to formulate successful strategies. • Ability to adapt new environment – micro or macro. • Problem solving approach. • Interpersonal skills • Communication skills. • Self-confidence. • Initiative and drive to succeed. Teenagers today as sedentary as 60-year-olds

mid heightened concern that exercise deficits are contributing to the growing obesity epidemic, new research has found that activity levels of teenagers are comparable to 60-year-olds. The findings, published in the journal Preventive Medicine, also showed that starting at age 35, activity levels declined through midlife and older adulthood. The study involved 12,529 participants who wore tracking devices for seven straight days, removing them for only bathing and at bedtime. "Activity levels at the end of adolescence were alarmingly low, and by age 19, they were comparable to 60-yearolds," said the study's senior author, Vadim Zipunnikov, Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health in Maryland, US. For their study, the researchers
used data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from the 2003-2004 and 2005-2006 survey cycles. The devices measured how much time participants were sedentary or engaged in light or moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. The researchers broke down findings into five age groups -- children (ages six to 11); adolescents (ages 12 to 19); young adults (ages 20 to 29); adults at midlife (ages 31 to 59); and older adults (age 60 to 84). Forty-nine per cent of the participants were male, the rest female. Activity among 20-somethings, the only age group that saw an increase in activity levels, was spread out throughout the day, with an increase in physical activity in the early morning, compared to younger adolescents. The increase may be related to starting full-time work and other life
transitions. Although males generally had higher activity levels than females, particularly high-intensity activity, after midlife, these levels dropped off sharply compared to females. Among adults 60 years and older, males were more sedentary and had lower light-intensity activity levels than females. The study confirmed that recommended guidelines were not being met. For instance, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity a day for children ages five to 17 years. The study found that more than 25 per cent of boys and 50 per cent of girls ages six to 11 and more than 50 per cent of male and 75 per cent of female adolescents ages 12 to 19 had not met the WHO recommendation.
People are putting snail excretion on their faces to get a healthy glow: Is it really helpful?

emember the time when Asian snake venom was being billed as the most powerful antidote to wrinkles. The antiageing daily moisturiser was believed to be better than Botox. During the time of launch, the makers claimed that their synthesised viper venom “stuns the skin in the same way a real snake bite would, helping to keep it smooth”. Now, a new fad is taking the cosmetic world by storm. Skincare products with snail secretion as the key ingredient by Korean-based beauty brands like Tony Moly and Missha are claiming to treats wrinkles, acne scars, and other skin conditions with their range of moisturisers, masks, make-up creams, and serums. It is the glycolic acid in snail secretion that has been deemed as the agent necessary for the skin cells to produce collagen and elastin, which is important for getting an even skin tone. This slime is something snails let out as a thick fluid as a means to protect themselves when they are agitated. But can’t any product with glycolic acid do the trick?
Dr Deepali Bhardwaj, dermatologist to the President Estate Clinic and The Skin & Hair Clinics spoke to indianexpress.com and here’s what she had to say, “Snail creams are a huge fad these days just like snake venom gels, and creams were. These products claim to contain glycosaminoglycan and hyaluronic acids, but they are in such filtered forms that I don’t believe it can really work on the skin. It is equal to putting almond, it has the same benefits.” She further adds, “In ancient Greek mythology it was proven that the Greeks
used to put snail secretion on their face for beauty. Snails were also crushed and used by Hippocrates, the famous physician to treat inflammations and diseases because at that time he did not have other medicines and equipments but now to do that is not actually necessary when it can be used just like leech therapy.” There’s no doubt that snail secretion is rich in nutrient but there’s no guarantee that it will be an effective skincare treatment because a lot depends on how the slime is concentrated, the type of snail and the amount excreted.
female voices you should read

F
Huffington Post
or every positive attribute a woman may possess - strength, persistence, decisiveness - there seems to be a popularly used synonym that casts the same quality in a negative light. Women who lead may be painted as curt, loud or cold - or, worst of all, hysterical. To combat this message, the staff at New York City’s Strand Book Store compiled a list of strong female voices who, like Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), refuse to be silenced. Writes Strand: “On the heels of yet another female U.S. Senator being told to more or less ‘calm down’ while passionately doing the job she was elected to do, we are again wondering this: why are outspoken women so quickly accused of being hysterical? Being unapologetically loud and standing firm on your values are viewed very differently among genders, and when this perceived ‘hysteria’ halts progress, we have a problem.” Below are 10 titles by women with strong, clear voices, as selected by Strand Book Store: Mother of All Questions by Rebecca Solnit In a tone that is incisive, challenging and more than a little disturbing, Solnit speaks volumes on women who refuse to be silent, the gender binary, and so much more. She is fearless in addressing misogyny, the casualness of rape jokes in contemporary comedy, and the need for men to join the third wave. Reassuring and honest, this essay collection embraces modern day feminism and voices that celebrate it. Looking for more leadership? Check out Solnit’s Men Explain Things to Me, or as we consider it, the bible of “mansplaining.” I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai When we grow up, we want to be like Malala. With a strength that many will (thankfully) never need to channel, Malala offers forgiveness to the members of the Taliban that shot her in the head at just 15 years old in Pakistan. Her miraculous recovery can only be overshadowed by her determination to voice the need for girls’ education in a world of suppression. Through education, these girls can pursue the lives they dream of and the independence they may only read about. With her own education and determination, Malala is the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts. My Beloved World by Sonia Sotomayor Another example of strong women in the government, Sonia Sotomayor was the first Hispanic and third woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. As many stellar female role models, Sotomayor learned early in life to depend on herself if she wanted to succeed. She was inspired by television characters in her career choice, and her sheer determination ensured that she became a lawyer and earned a degree at Yale Law School. Her memoir inspires us to take further steps to see women in every role of federal government. A Woman Looking at Men Looking at Women by Siri Hustvedt A beautiful collection of essays from novelist and feminist Siri Hustvedt, author of The Blazing World and What I Loved. In the first of three sections, Hustvedt investigates how gender biases affect our perception of the world in a most timely fashion. Her feminist perspective is combined with elegant writing as she draws connections between
the oft incompatible humanities and the sciences. Plenty Ladylike by Claire McCaskill A wonderful story that is pro-feminine ambition, Plenty Ladylike explores the life of a woman who has faced it all. Paying her way through law school as a waitress (a trying job on its own), McCaskill has faced and overcome opposition her entire career. When seeking support on her way to the Missouri House of Representatives, voters would suggest she just go get married instead. Once she was elected, secret meetings were held by fellow politicians to block her efforts. When given every opportunity to give up, she refused, and that persistence definitely makes us a fan. No Is Not Enough: Resisting Trump’s Shock Politics and Winning the World We Need by Naomi Klein The title alone reminds us that now is not a time to be timid and quiet. Klein’s new release offers real action and strategy for countering the surreal world of politics currently dominating the U.S. She also draws a strong correlation for readers between shock politics and climate change based on two decades of extensive research. A great read on in-depth information of the current administration and how to continue the resistance. Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud: The Rise and Reign of The Unruly Woman by Anne Helen Petersen Turn brazen into a compliment with this soonto-be-released fireball by Buzzfeed culture writer Anne Helen Petersen. Inside, she examines pop icons who are known for their unruly attitudes (think Lena Dunham or Nicki Minaj) and tops us off with a no-nonsense analysis of why this has become a make it or break it point for today’s celebrities. Hunger: A Memoir of [My] Body by Roxane Gay Freshly released and on the coattails of her heartbreaking collection of short stories, Difficult Women, Roxane Gay has captured us again with the new memoir, Hunger. In it, with bravery and honesty that is raw as it is resilient, Gay catalogs a lifetime with being at odds with her own body. In a society where being bigger can actually make you invisible, this book provides a voice to an underrepresented population of women here and around the world. Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity by Julia Serano As an activist, professional biologist, and transsexual woman, Julia Serano provides a unique perspective on gender, tying together the social and science perspectives in one well-crafted book. She hits hard on the theme of femininity, emphasizing our predisposition to equate it with weakness and passiveness, and she explores where this theme stems from. She encourages feminist and transgender activists to reclaim “being feminine,” turning it into an empowering term for all. Sex Object: A Memoir by Jessica Valenti A New York Times bestseller, Sex Object is praised as “an antidote to the fun and flirty feminism of selfies and self-help” by New Republic. Valenti is unabashed in nailing down the ways that sexism affects all areas of our lives. Using the her young adult life in NYC as a foundation, the personal becomes political in a memoir that is less about storytelling and more about a society that still puts women in second place.

Those found guilty are: Abu Salem who was extradited from Portugal in 2005, Mustafa Dossa who was deported from the UAE, Mohammed Tahir Merchant alias Tahir Takla, Karimullah Khan, Riyaz Siddiqui and Feroze Abdul Rashid Khan, said Public Prosecutor Deepak Salve. Another prime accused, Abdul Qayyum has been acquitted of all the major charges, Salve told mediapersons. He had accompanied Salem to the home of film star Sanjay Dutt to deliver arms and ammunition and was arrested on February 13, 2007. Special TADA Judge G.A. Sanap has fixed the next hearing on June 19, when the Special Court will fix the date for the arguments on the quantum of sentence for the guilty, he added. All the accused found guilty and the one who was acquitted were present before Special Judge Sanap when the verdict was read out in the open court. Role of the six convicts in 1993 serial bomb blasts case MuMbai, June 16 (PTi): Twenty four years after the 12 co- ordinated blasts that rocked Mumbai claiming 257 lives and injuring over 700 people, a special TADA court here today convicted six persons and acquitted one in the second leg of the trial in the case. dividually or jointly held guilty of the major charges, including conspiracy, terror, supplying arms and ammunition, killing, damage to public and private properties, in the blasts carried out at 13 locations, that killed 257 persons. According to Salve, the serial blasts were carried out in revenge for the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992, which were followed by the twophased bloody communal carnage in Mumbai in December 1992 and January 1993. Opposition seeks judicial probe into 'fake' Jharkhand encounter Ranchi, June 16 (ianS): The opposition parties have termed the encounter between police and Maoist guerrillas in Giridih earlier this month in which one person was killed as "fake" and demanded a judicial probe. Lal Baske, a villager, was killed in a gun battle with the security forces in Pirtand jungle of Giridih district on June 9. Former Chief Minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) Executive President Hemant Soren, who met Baske's family members, said the "encounter was fake". "Jharkhand government is getting innocent tribals living in jungles killed in the name of Maoists. We demand a judicial probe or CBI inquiry into the encounter. The family members should be given Rs 25 lakh as compensation," he told reporters. Police described the killed villager as a hardcore Maoist guerrilla. After Baske's death, his family members and villagers raised the issue of fake encounter. Even banned Maoist group, Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), has in a statement denied that Baske was a member of the group as termed by police. He was running a tea shop on Parasnath hill. According to family members, Baske had on the day of the shootout gone to the jungle to collect wood. The Congress party has termed the "innocent" villager's killing as unfortunate. "Jharkhand was created for the welfare of people living in this region, particularly the tribal people. Now, innocent tribal people are being killed in the name of antiMaoist operation. We demand a judicial probe into the encounter by a sitting judge of the High Court," Jharkhand Congress General Secretary Alok Dubey told IANS.
In last 7 years, 2 civilians died a week in police firing Devanik Saha IANS
Two civilians died every week, on average, in police firing in India, according to national crime data for the years 2009 to 2015. The data provide perspective to the death of six farmers in Madhya Pradesh's Mandsaur district on June 6, when police fired on protesting farmers demanding better prices. As many as 796 civilians died due to police firing between 2009 and 2015, according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). As many as 4,747 incidents of police firing were reported between 2009 and 2015. Over the years, firing incidents have decreased, mostly due to a decline in incidents in Jammu and Kashmir, which witnessed severe unrest between 2008 and 2010. For instance, in 2010, 662 incidents of police firing were reported in Jammu and Kashmir, in which 91 civilians and 17 police personnel died, and 494 civilians and 2,952 police personnel were injured. Of the 156 incidents of police firing in 2015, 86 were classified as "on other occasion", 30 to effect arrest and 21 in riots. These incidents killed 16, five and 11 civilians, respectively. In the same year, 19 incidents of police firing in self defence led to 10 civilian deaths. Among the states, Rajasthan reported the maximum occasions (35) where police resorted to firing in 2015, followed by Maharashtra (33) and Uttar Pradesh (29). Before 2014, the incidents of firing were categorised as: Riots, anti-dacoity operations, against terrorists and extremists, and others. Between 2009 and 2013, these categories saw 1,371, 174, 815 and 775 incidents of police firing, respectively. Between 2009 and 2015, as many as 471 police personnel died during police firing, the NCRB data reveal.
their local henchmen Tiger Memon, the Dossa brothers and others hatched a conspiracy to carry out the terror acts in Mumbai. The nefarious triple objectives were to "overawe" the government of India, strike terror among the people, alienate sections of the people to create communal discord among the masses, besides other intentions. For perpetrating their heinous acts, the conspirators acquired and smuggled deadly arms and ammunition, detonators, hand grenades and nearly three tonnes of the deadly RDX (Research & Development Explosive - OR Cy-
clotrimethylene Trinitramine), which was used for the first time after World War II on such a scale. Earlier, in the same case, the Special TADA Court had convicted 100 accused, including Yakub Abdul Razak Memon who was hanged on July 30, 2015. Actor Dutt, who was let off the terrorism charges but tried and convicted under the Arms Act, served his full sentence and was released from jail in February 2016. At the end of a marathon trial lasting over 13 years, in September 2006, 12 accused were awarded the death sentence, of
which 10 were commuted to life by the Supreme Court later. Another 20 accused were given life sentence. On the afternoon of March 12, 1993, a series of 13 blasts in quick succession went off at various locations in Mumbai city and suburbs, killing 257 people and injuring over 700 others. The prime targeted locations included the Air India Building, Bombay Stock Exchange, Zaveri Bazar, then existing five star hotels, Hotel SeaRock and Hotel Juhu Centaur, and others leading to damage to public and private properties worth Rs 27 crore.
Abu Salem: He went to Baruch in Gujarat in January 1993 along with an absconding accused for receiving arms, explosives and ammunitions. He got nine AK-56 rifles, 100 hand grenades and some bullets from Baruch in Gujarat and transported them to Mumbai by concealing them in fake cavities of a Maruti Van which was allegedly given to him by accused Riyaz Siddiqui. Salem also delivered (along with two others) some arms and ammunitions to Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt at his residence on January 16, 1993 and took back some of them two days later. On August 13, 2013, TADA court let CBI drop some charges against Salem as per an extradition treaty between India and Portugal. His another application to marry a 26-yearold woman is pending with the court. Mustafa Dossa: One of the masterminds of the March 12, 1993 serial terror blasts, he smuggled firearms, ammunitions, detonators, hand grenades and highly explosive substances like RDX into India. Dossa along with Tiger Memon and Chhota Shakeel organized training camps in Pakistan and in India to impart and undergo weapon and arms training and handling of explosives. They also sent men from India to Pakistan via Dubai for arms training. He also attended many conspiracy meetings.
Tahir Merchant alias Taher Taklya: He attended conspiracy meetings in Dubai and motivated his associates to arrange men from Mumbai to be sent to Pakistan for arms training. He collected funds to procure arms and planned to set up an illegal arms manufacturing factory in India. Riyaz Siddiqui: He arranged for a van with specially- crafted secret cavities, which had been used for transporting 9 AK-56 rifles, 100 hand grenades and some boxes of magazines from the godown at Baruch to Mumbai. Firoz Abdul Rashid Khan: On January 8, 1993, two months ahead of the blasts, Mohammed Dossa (absconding brother of Mustafa Dossa) sent Firoz Abdul Rashid Khan and another accused to Alibagh and Mhasla to inform Customs officials and landing agents about the landing (of arms and explosives) that was to take place the next day. He also attended conspiracy meetings. During the fag end of the trial, in May last year, he sought to become an approver. However, the court rejected his plea after the CBI told the court that it has enough evidence against all the accused and they don't need any approver. Karimulla Khan: Karimullah attended conspiracy meetings. He also played an active role in landing of consignments comprising arms, ammunitions, detonators, hand grenades and RDX that took place in Shekhandi in Raigad Maharashtra ahead of the blasts. According to prosecution, Karimulla had informed another accused that he was going to Pakistan for arms training via Dubai. One accused Abdul Quayyum, was let off for want of evidence against him.
Two more airlines bar Andhra Pradesh Lashkar kills MP J C Reddy, Minister promises probe six policemen in south Kashmir
new Delhi, June 16 (ianS): Air carriers Vistara and AirAsia India on Friday joined other airlines in barring TDP MP J.C. Diwakar Reddy from their flights, even as Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju promised a probe into the incident at Visakhapatnam airport where he allegedly misbehaved with IndiGo officials. AirAsia India and Vistara said they fully supported the decision taken by the industry and that there has to be "zero tolerance" to abusive behaviour. As of Friday, all the seven major domestic airlines have barred Reddy from using their services. IndiGo had placed a ban on flying Reddy on late Thursday evening, which was followed by four more airlines -Air India, Jet Airways, SpiceJet and GoAir -- also barring him. On his part, Raju said that he will get the "entire incident" relating to TDP MP allegedly
creating a ruckus at the Visakhapatnam airport and being subsequently barred by seven airlines probed. "I will get the entire incident at Vizag Airport enquired into to find out the exact details and ensure that lawful outcomes follow," Raju tweeted on Friday, a day after Reddy was denied a boarding pass for an IndiGo flight as he had showed up late and subsequently kicked up a row at the airport. Raju also denied any intervention to allow boarding for the MP on the same flight which was earlier denied to him. Interestingly, Raju was present at the airport at the time of Thursday's incident. He had even claimed that Reddy had reached the airport on time. "Perhaps, the flight was overbooked," the Minister had said on Thursday. It's been alleged that after being denied a boarding pass, the Telugu Desam Party
lawmaker from Anantapur damaged a printer and misbehaved with IndiGo airline staff. The MP had reported at the check-in counter 28 minutes before the scheduled departure of the flight against the regulation 45 minutes. As the airline staff told him they cannot issue him a boarding pass, he got angry and entered into a heated argument with them. Closed-circuit television footage aired on some television channels showed the TDP leader shouting at the airline staff even as some security personnel tried to pacify him. "The staff politely informed him that boarding for flight 6E-608 was closed and offered to accommodate Reddy in a subsequent flight," IndiGo has said in a statement on Thursday. "Reddy expressed his annoyance and soon raged against the staff using aggressive and abusive behaviour.
IndiGo saw a footage aired by some media personnel -which shows visual representation of Reddy's aggressive behaviour against the staff and further damaging the airport property." In a similar incident in March, Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad was accused of assaulting an Air India staff, following which several airlines banned him from flying on their planes till he apologised. Gaikwad later submitted a letter to the Aviation Minister to express 'regret', after which AI revoked the ban, followed by the Federation of Indian Airlines and other private airlines also lifting the ban. Following Gaikwad's incident, the Civil Aviation Ministry last month released the draft rules for a national 'nofly list' that bans unruly passengers from domestic air travel. The final guidelines are expected to be released by this June-end.
ananTnag, June 16 (ianS): At least six policemen, including a Station House Officer (SHO), were killed in a militant ambush on a police party near Achabal town in south Kashmir, officials said. The LeT has claimed responsibility for the attack, that came hours after security forces killed one of the group's top commanders. Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Sayed Abid Rashid confirmed the killing of the policemen, adding that two civilians were also injured. The injured have been shifted to Srinagar. In an e-mailed statement to a local news agency Lashkar-e-Taiba (Let) claimed responsibility for the attack. Police sources said 10-15 heavily armed militants attacked the police party, led by SHO Feroz Ahmad Dar, near Thajiwara and also looted their weapons. The attack came hours after security forces killed two LeT militants, including commander Junaid Mattoo, in Arwani village of south Kashmir. Last month, the LeT had issued a stern warning to policemen in the Valley "to quit and return home forthwith, otherwise be prepared to die".
Battle of attrition begins on President's election new Delhi, June 16 (ianS): A battle of attrition began on Friday with major opposition parties making it clear to the government that a consensus on the President's election will not be possible without the ruling side giving the name of its candidate, a demand that was termed as "inappropriate". The government formally began its outreach with the opposition on the presidential election with senior ministers Rajnath Singh and M. Venkaiah Naidu meeting Congress President Sonia Gandhi, but placed no name of its nominee. Instead, the BJP team sought from the Congress leadership the name of the opposition candidate for the July 17 election. The opposition leaders were told that the government and the BJP would like to finalise the candidate for the presidential poll before Prime Minister
Narendra Modi leaves on a three-nation trip on June 24. "The BJP leaders did not give any name to Congress President Sonia Gandhi but they wanted us to reveal the name of our candidate. We were expecting them to disclose the name so that we can discuss it in our party and other opposition parties. Since no names were given from the government side and since no names are being given, there is no question of any discussion and cooperation," Ghulam Nabi Azad, who was present at the meeting, told reporters later. "They should give us the name and then seek cooperation," he said. Questioned about the purpose of the meeting, Mallikarjun Kharge, who was also present said, "That was only to meet, and they are seeking cooperation. And what I can guess is just they are seeking cooperation because
they have already got something in their mind. That's why they have not given the name." Singh and Naidu are part of the three-member team constituted by Bharatiya Janata Party President Amit Shah for discussion with political parties for the presidential polls. The two-member team later met CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, Prakash Karat and Brinda Karat to seek the party's support. Ye chur y vir tually echoed the views of the Congress leaders and expressed dismay over the government not suggesting a name. "We had expected that they would suggest some name which we could have seriously considered. Unfortunately, they did not come forward with any name," Yechury said, terming it a "public relations exercise" by the government.
He made it clear that support can be given to a candidate who has impeccable secular credentials and one who can uphold the Constitution. "We would have certainly thought about such a person, but they did not suggest any name. So, there is nothing to think about when they did not suggest any name," Yechury said. The senior communist leader said the government side has assured them they would come up with a name after three-four days and "sought our support". On speculation doing the rounds that the Left parties want former West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi as the opposition nominee, he said, "They (government) know. The names that we are discussing are in public domain." However, government sources said disclosing the name of its candidate before consultations with
political parties may not be appropriate. Sources said the government and the BJP are of the view that approaching different parties with one or a panel of names for approval without knowing their views and suggestions may not be appropriate. They said the twomember BJP team, which met Congress President and other leaders, explained to them that the twin objectives of the consultation process was to have the benefit of views and suggestions of various parties in the matter and to seek their support. Accordingly the support of Congress and other parties was sought, they said, adding that some political parties have already indicated their views in the matter of selection of a candidate. The two senior leaders in their meeting with CPIM leaders suggested to them to consider if putting
up a candidate for the sake of it was necessary. Naidu also spoke to NCP chief Sharad Pawar over telephone and held detailed discussions. Later he met CPI General Secretary S. Sudhakar Reddy. Naidu has already talked to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who is also chief of ally TDP, PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss and N. Rangaswamy of the All India Congress (NR) and sought their cooperation. While the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister has assured Naidu that his party would stand by the decision of the Prime Minister, Pawar told him that he would come to Delhi and discuss the issue. Meanwhile, BJP ally Shiv Sena floated the name of eminent agriculture scientist M.S. Swaminathan for the top job if its "first choice" RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat was not acceptable.

Russia verifying whether In Philippines battle, troops are pinned it killed IS leader in airstrike down by sniper fire, Molotov cocktails MARAWI CITY, June 16 (ReuTeRs): When Philippines troops advanced on positions held by Islamist militants in a southern city last Friday they were caught in a kill zone. Thirteen soldiers died and about 40 were wounded during a 14-hour battle that showed recapturing Marawi City from an estimated 150-200 Islamic State militants was becoming harder by the day. The troops were hit by rocket propelled grenades and came under sniper fire as they crossed bridges over the Agus river toward the city’s commercial centre, an area held by the militants since May 23. “The snipers are good, they make sure that with every shot, someone is killed or wounded,” said Pendaton Guro, a retired colonel who recognised the popping sound of the high caliber rifles while watching the battle daily from his rooftop overlooking the city. The offensive to retake the town, in the middle of the southern Philippines region of Mindanao, is now in its fourth week. And, the longer the militants hold out, the more President Rodrigo Duterte’s image as a strong man could suffer. Two weeks ago the general leading the offensive was relieved of command, and Duterte assured Filippinos that Marawi would be cleared of militants in a matter of days. The protracted battle is reinforcing fears in nearby Indonesia and Malaysia, both of which have Muslim majorities, that Islamic State could seek to set up a regional caliphate as it holds onto territory in Southeast Asia for the first time.
Troops have responded by rigging wooden panels – adorned with painted images of skulls or slogans on their “Simba” armoured personnel carriers to repel rockets. A grenade “will explode as soon as it hits the wood block, and it will not explode on the metal,” a combat policeman told Reuters.

Mahamud Darang said his armoured carrier came under fire from a blackclad militant firing rocketpropelled grenades as a column of troops crossed the Agus River toward the commercial centre of Marawi City, an area held by the militants since May 23. The first grenade hit the ground in front of them, Darang told Reuters. He then spotted the shooter, just before he fired again. “He was on the third floor of a building. Then the second one came right into the vehicle and blew up,” said Darang, speaking from a hospital bed, his head and shoulders bandaged from shrapnel wounds. One soldier died and Darang and some of the others were wounded. Bleeding, the 21-year army veteran ordered his comrades to dismount from the burning vehicle and take cover in a nearby building. The four soldiers were rescued later and taken to hospital. The rest of the conWITHERING FIRE During last Friday’s as- tingent also came under sault, Technical Sergeant withering fire from mili-
Father of German reunification Helmut Kohl passes away at 87

BeRLIn, June 16 (AGenCIes); Kohl led Germany for 16 years (from 1982 to 1998). He is credited with bringing East and West Germany together after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Together with his French ally President Francois Mitterrand, he was responsible for the introduction of the euro. European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker has ordered flags at EU institutions to be flown at halfmast. “Helmut’s death hurts me deeply,” Juncker said in a tweet. “My mentor, my friend, the very essence of Europe, he will be greatly, greatly missed.” Former US President George HW Bush paid tribute to the man he knew while in office from 1989 to 1993 as a “true friend of freedom” and “one of the greatest leaders in post-war Europe”. German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel paid tribute to a “great German statesman and above all a great European”. Kohl suffered a bad fall in 2008 and had been using a wheelchair. He died at his house in Ludwigshafen, in the western state of Rhineland-Palatinate, Bild newspaper reports. Kohl, who led the centre-right Christian Democrats, was the longest-serving chancellor of the 20th Century. Helmut Josef Michael Kohl was born on 3 April 1930 into a conservative, Catholic family. His political outlook was shaped by his experiences in his hometown of Ludwigshafen in the Rhineland during World War Two. Because of its huge chemical works, the town was heavily bombed and, at the age of 12, the young Helmut found himself helping to recover the charred bodies of his neighbours from the rubble. What he once described as “the blessing of a late birth” freed him from any taints of Nazism. A passionate believer in European integration, he persuaded Germans to give up their cherished deutschmark in favour of the European single currency.
tants in buildings, six to seven storeys high, as they crossed the low-lying Mapandi bridge over the river. Some were hit by Molotov cocktails. REINFORCED BUILDINGS, HIGH GROUND Lieutenant Colonel Jo-Ar Herrera, a military spokesman, said on Thursday that the army had retaken higher ground to the east of the city, reducing the enemy’s field of fire. Three bridges over the Agus were also now under the army’s control, Herrera said. Many of the militants are locals, from the Marawi region. Military officials say they have been joined by battle-hardened Islamic State fighters from as far away as Yemen and Morocco. The ill-equipped Philippines military has mostly operated against rebels in mountainous territory or on remote islands and is unused to urban warfare. Aiding the militants is Mindanao’s history of clan warfare - known in the local dialect as rido – and most buildings in Marawi
have basements and are built with walls of thick concrete. “The culture of this region is they have built their houses like fortresses,” said one of the frontline army commanders. “They want to protect their families. They know how to make guns. That’s also part of the rido culture.” The military says its attacks have to be tempered with caution because of civilians trapped in the crossfire and because it does not want to assault one of the city’s numerous mosques. The most fearsome weapon the militants have is a sniper rifle modelled on the U.S.-made .50 caliber Barrett. If the army uses armoured carriers, the militants respond with rocketpropelled grenades (RPGs) that can penetrate the armour, or shower metal splinters within the vehicle. “Their RPGs make it hard for our armour to advance. If we get too close, they will fire RPGs,” said a soldier, who said he had lost four close comrades in the siege.
WELL-STOCKED Although the military has said it has thrown a cordon around the city, the militants appeared to have good stocks of food and ammunition. The assault on Marawi began just before the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, when many Muslim families store food because they do not eat in daylight hours. “They put ammunition and different arms in different places,” said Marawi City police commander Superintendent Marlon Tabaya. “I believe they have planned it for a long time.” The military is using OV-10 planes for regular bombing raids and has pressed tanks into battle, and some units are armed with M-16 assault rifles. A combat policeman who spent nine days on the frontlines, however, lamented the state of his equipment. “We have no kevlar vests, helmets or new weapons,” he said. Despite the difficulties, troops are confident they will make a breakthrough. Two front line officers told Reuters radio intercepts indicated that the militants’ ammunition, arms and food supplies were running low. There were also signs of discord between the different groups fighting in the city, who come from at least three different Muslimmajority ethnic groups.
GOVERNMENT OF NAGALAND DIRECTORATE OF AGRICULTURE NO.AGR/ADMN/2010/6299
Dated Kma, 15th June’ 2017
GENERAL INFORMATION
In continuation of this Department's "General Information" published on 09.06.2017 and to clear any confusion that may arise from the "Open Letter" of the Diphupar Village Council published on 14.06.2017, asking the Department to obtain their village patta as the Department land falls within their village Jurisdiction, the following information is issued for public awareness on the matter: 1. The Department's land located at 4th Mile, Dimapur, which is bounded on the west by the Dimapur-Kohima Highway (National Highway 39), never was and is not within the jurisdiction of Diphupar Village. The land in question was part of the area measuring 21,768.4 acres declared to be "Rangapahar Reserved Forest" by Governor in Council Vide Notification No.58-R dated: 08.01.1924. Subsequently, in 1966, the Government of Nagaland by Notification NO.FOR-129/65 dated: 01.07.1966, released the land measuring about 4896 acres from reserved forest for the purpose of sugarcane cultivation to feed the proposed Sugar Mill. 2. In 1981, an attempt was made by 23 persons from Diphupar Village to encroach upon the land in question. In response, the Department filed a complaint for eviction before the Deputy Commissioner for Eviction, Dimapur, Nagaland, and the same was registered as Case No. EV3/81. The said case was disposed of by the Deputy Commissioner Vide Judgment dated 03.12.1981, directing the encroachers to vacate the land before the 15th of January, 1982, failing which the structures and buildings shall be destroyed by force. The 23 encroachers from Diphupar Village filed an appeal under Section 12 of the 'Nagaland Eviction of Persons in Unauthorized Occupation of Public Land', against the judgment passed by the Deputy Commissioner for Eviction, Dimapur, before the Commissioner, Nagaland, and the appeal was registered as Eviction Appeal No. 5/82. The said appeal was dismissed by the Additional Commissioner, Nagaland, by Judgment dated 27.08.1982. The 23 villagers of Diphupar again filed a writ petition before the Hon'ble Gauhati High Court challenging the validity of the judgment dated 27.08.1982 passed by the Addl. Commissioner, Nagaland. The writ petition was registered as Civil Rule No. 1305 of 1982/23(K)/86, and the same was disposed of by the Division Bench of the Hon'ble High Court Vide Judgment dated 18.12.1990, whereby the writ petition was dismissed. 3. Despite having lost their case in all the above courts, the Diphupar Village Council have, on several occasions, made attempts to encroach upon the land in question, but through prompt action by the Department, the District Administration has prevented the encroachments. And, as a last resort, the Diphupar Village Council has been asking the Department to obtain their village patta for the land in question. 4. The demand of the Diphupar Village Council is preposterous. A village existing under the Government cannot dictate the Government. There is no law empowering the village to issue patta even to individuals. The record of the Government is supreme and no village authority can overrule the same. Therefore, in view of the above, the Department reiterates the earlier statement (General Information published on 09.06.2017) and informs that any individual / party who purchases plots in the Department's land from any village/organization shall be doing so their own risk. BeIRuT, June 16 (AP): Russia said Friday it was verifying whether it had killed the leader of the Islamic State group in an airstrike targeting a meeting of IS leaders just outside the group’s de facto capital in Syria, dealing a potentially severe blow to the extremist group as it fights to hang on to its strongholds in Syria and Iraq. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed in a Russian strike in late May along with other senior group commanders, adding that the information about his death was still “being verified through various channels.” Asked later about that claim at a news conference in Moscow, however, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said: “I don’t have a 100-percent confirmation of the information.” There had been previous reports of al-Baghdadi being killed but they did not turn out to be true. The IS leader last released an audio on Nov. 3, urging his followers to keep up the fight for Mosul as they defend the Iraqi city against a major offensive that began weeks earlier. The spokesman for the U.S.-led antiIS coalition said in a statement Friday he could not confirm the Russian claim. The report of al-Baghdadi’s death comes as IS suffers major setbacks in which they have lost wide areas of territory and both of their strongholds — Mosul in Iraq and Syria’s Raqqa. Both are under attack by various groups who are fighting under the cover of airstrikes by the U.S.-led coalition. As the militants take a pounding in their eroding strongholds, U.S. officials and Syrian activists say many commanders have fled Mosul and Raqqa in recent months for Mayadeen, a remote town in the heart of Syria’s IS-controlled, Euphrates River valley near the Iraqi border. Their relocation could extend the group’s ability to wreak havoc in the region and beyond for months to come. Lavrov, at the press conference, added on a cautious note that if al-Baghdadi’s death is confirmed, its importance mustn’t be overestimated. Lavrov said that “past examples of similar actions to strike the leadership of terrorist groups were presented with much enthusiasm and pomp, but the experience shows that those structures later regained their capability.” The claim of al-Baghdadi’s possible

demise also comes nearly three years to the day after he declared himself the leader of an Islamic caliphate in Iraq and Syria, from a historic mosque in Mosul. If confirmed, al-Baghdadi’s death would mark a major military success for Russia, which has conducted a military campaign in support of Syrian President Bashar Assad since September 2015. It is not clear who would replace alBaghdadi if he was killed — the group has lost many of its senior commanders, killed in U.S.-led airstrikes, including Fadhil Ahmad al-Hayali, said by U.S. officials to be the No. 2 leader of the group. Al-Hayali was killed in an August 2015 airstrike by the U.S. in Iraq. Another top figure was Abu Ali al-Anbari, the extremist group’s leading finance official who was killed in 2016. One of the Islamic State’s best known commanders, Abu Mohammed al-Adnani, the IS spokesman who frequently releases audio messages calling for steppedup attacks, was also killed last year. The Defense Ministry said the air raid on May 28 that targeted an IS meeting held on the southern outskirts of Raqqa in Syria also killed about 30 mid-level militant leaders and about 300 other fighters. The ministry said the IS leaders were gathered to discuss the group’s withdrawal from Raqqa, the group’s de facto capital. It said the military began planning the hit after getting word that the group’s leadership was to meet in order to plan IS’s exit to the south.

Warriors celebrate NBA crown with street parade sAN FRANcIsco, JuNE 16 (AFP): The Golden State Warriors celebrated their latest NBA championship, waving to the crowd from atop double-decker buses as their victory parade weaved through the streets of downtown Oakland. The jubilant players hoisted the Larry O'Brien Trophy and gave high fives to their fans as confetti filled the air. The parade ended on the shores of Lake Merritt where coach Steve Kerr and the players addressed the crowd during an 80-minute rally. "We need to enjoy this to the fullest," star guard Stephen Curry said. "This whole day, this whole atmosphere, is unbelievable." The Warriors defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers in five games to win the title, capping a brilliant 15-1 postseason run. It was the second parade in three seasons for the Warriors. "There is nobody having more fun than me," War-
riors owner Joe Lacob said. "This is the best job in the world." The championship was the first of forward Kevin Durant's career, and the NBA finals MVP took in the moment. Durant's decision to depart the Oklahoma City Thunder and join the Warriors was criticized by many, but winning the title provided redemption for the NBA star. "It means the world for me to win the championship," Durant told the crowd. "Hopefully we can keep it going. Thank you for the support. "It has been a crazy year for me. Going through this year was so much fun. You come into work each day and it is more like fun." Golden State went 40 years between titles after winning the crown in 1975. Three of the franchise's five titles were secured after the team moved to the Bay Area from Philadelphia.

TV ad rates rocket ahead of India, Pakistan final
NEW DELHI, JuNE 16 (REutERs): Television advertising rates for Sunday's cricket final between India and Pakistan are 10 times the normal price, industry sources said, as millions of fans are expected to tune in for a clash that last time ranked among the six most-watched sporting events. Pakistan, the lowest-ranked team at the Champions Trophy tournament, upset host and favourites England to set up a final with defending champions India, feeding a frenzy for a game that commands a fanatical following in the region and among its diaspora. A 30-second spot during the final to be broadcast by Rupert Murdoch's Star Sports is expected to cost nearly 10 million rupees ($155,267), far higher than the 1 million rupees that advertisers pay on average for most Indian shows, said a person involved in buying ads. Most of the TV spots for the final, to be played in London, were pre-booked with firms such as Nissan Motor, Intel Corp, Emirates, Chinese mobile maker Oppo and Indian tyre maker MRF signed up as commercial partners for the tournament. Fewer than 10 percent of the slots are left for the final, a person in the sports broadcasting
industry said. Companies still wanting to air their ads will be paying a higher rate than those who prebooked, said the person, who did not want to be named, citing business confidentiality. "India v Pakistan Final... !!!!!!!! All TV execs around the world are now cracking a nice bottle open to celebrate," tweeted former England captain Michael Vaughan. India captain Virat Kohli is the only cricketer among the world's 100 highest-paid sportsmen, ranking 89th with annual income of $22 million, according to a list compiled by Forbes. Before the Champions Trophy, the last time India and Pakistan played a one-day international was during the 2015 World Cup. That game, won by India, was one of the top-six most viewed sporting events, along with the soccer World Cup final and Usain Bolt's 100-metre sprint at the 2012 Olympic Games, the sports broadcasting industry source said. "That was a league game, this is the final," the person said. "You can expect this to be even bigger." India and Pakistan have already met during the tournament's group stage, with India winning easily. More than 200
million people watched that game, according to Indian media, citing BARC India. For Sunday's final, viewership is expected to be 30-40 percent higher. TROUBLED HISTORY Cricket between the neighbours and rivals has been limited because of their longstanding political problems. They last played a bilateral series in 2012-13, when Pakistan toured India for two Twenty20 games and three one-day internationals. It was their first series since the 2008 Mumbai attacks, when Pakistani militants went on a killing spree that left 166 people dead in India's financial capital. India has since refused to play Pakistan outside International Cricket Council events. In disputed Kashmir, claimed by both India and Pakistan, the cricket tournament has already caused discord. Residents of Indian Kashmir, many of whom support the Pakistani team, lit fire-crackers to celebrate Pakistan's victory over Sri Lanka earlier in the tournament. Later that night, residents in a village in south Kashmir accused Indian army soldiers of beating them and smashing their cars and windows to punish them for celebrating.
UFC scouring for Asian MMA fighters sINGAPoRE, JuNE 16 (AFP): Leading mixed martial arts promoter UFC is planning to hold three-four events a year in Asia and is scouring the region for fighters, a senior executive told AFP. Las Vegas-based UFC, which made stars of Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey, is making a concerted bid to establish a presence in the region, starting with an event in Singapore on Saturday. UFC will also hold an event in Tokyo in September and is planning a third Asian fight night in November, said Joe Carr, head of international and content. But he said unearthing home-grown fighters was "the most important piece of our
business". "You look around the world, any market we've had tremendous amounts of success is because we've had local talent emerge," Carr said. "We've been fortunate that we've been successful in Korea, Japan and some of the North Asian countries, we've been successful there. "Our challenge is more in Southeast Asia in finding talent from this market." Li Jingliang is the sole Chinese fighter on Saturday's card -- compatriot Wang Guan pulled out due to an injury -- which is topped by Holly Holm's fight against Bethe Correia of Brazil. Carr said it was harder to find
top-quality fighters in Southeast Asia, although the Philippines' Rolando Dy is also on the Singapore card. "The challenge in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore is that there's not any fighters that can compete at the highest levels of the UFC," he said. "But we're actively searching for those guys and when we find promising young prospects, we focus on bringing them to the US and fighter development programme and have them train at the best gyms have them hone their skills. "Particularly if we feel we're going to make (Singapore) an annual event, we're gonna be very focused on finding more talent in this region."

An Earnest Appeal To Any Or All Gau Rakshaks Kahuto Chishi Sumi Akukau (G.B.) Hevishe Village Khaghaboto Range, Dimapur
S
ir, sirs, mister or misters, whatever the case may be, (I have added the mister/misters because that seems to be the accepted mode of addressing strangers in the Hindi Heartland of India). I am constrained to write to you because no one else seems to be in a position to help me out of my dilemma. I understand that your “angrezi” may not be “ekdum pucca” so I will break it down into numbered points. 1. I cultivate some paddy fields in Northern Sumi, at the quadri-junction of Zuxushe, Changki, Mekokla and Shahphu Villages. Mechanisation is still a dream for me and my
neighbouring farmers, for, in Nagaland, your political connection, not the fact that you are a farmer, qualifies you to receive subsided tractors and farm equipment. So we use Oxen (castrated cows) to till our fields and thresh our paddy. 2. Coincidently, with the coming of the B.J.P. Party to power and government in India, a predator, either a tiger or a leopard, has been slaughtering my neighbours’ and my cattle for the past few years. Within the month of May and June of this year, I have lost two oxen and a cow and its calf to this predator. We have lost a total of 10cows to this beast. 3. We Nagas are mighty hunters and will have no problem disposing of this killer of
cows; but the leopard is an endangered and protected animal and we would not want to risk prosecution for shooting it; and, Bhagwan forbid it should be a tiger killing these cows, for then we would risk longer jail terms for shooting, not only an endangered and protected animal, but also the National Animal. 4. I appeal to you because I have read about you and seen videos of your bravery in beating up any suspected cow killers. I assure you that in my case, there is full proof that this animal is a cow killer. So please come to Nagaland and beat up or kill (your choice) this horrible Killer of Cows. 5. I am in full agreement with you that the cow is the most important animal of all
because no other animal does all of the following:(a) Ploughs our fields and threshes our paddy. (b) Gives us milk to drink. (c)Provides us dung for use as cooking fuel. (d)Pulls carts to transport people and goods But in my case it serves a fifth purpose:(e) It gives me meat to eat when it is too old to work or give milk. My last point proves that the cow is more important to me than to you; for while you find only 4 uses for the cow, I have 5 uses for it; and this Christmas, I will have to go without eating beef because of this Cow-Killer. So, please do help out a fellow lover of the cow.

The Clippers reached an agreement with the city of Inglewood, California to look into building a new stadium in the suburbs, about 12 kilometres (eight miles) southwest of downtown Los Angeles. "I have said from day one that we need to plan for the future. This agreement helps us do that by expanding our options," said Clippers owner Steve Ballmer. "The prospect of a new state-of-the-art NBA arena would allow us greater latitude to influence
our game schedule, particularly as it relates to weekend games." Ballmer said the Clippers hope to build a state of the art facility on 20 acres of land that would include an arena, training centre and offices. It would be located across the street from the NFL Los Angeles Rams' new stadium. But Ballmer said the Clippers would not be able to move before 2024, when their current lease with The Anschutz Corp. expires. The former boss of the internet giant Microsoft bought the California franchise in 2014 for $2 billion and quickly said he wanted the Clippers to play in their own arena. The Clippers were eliminated in the first round of the 2017 NBA playoffs.
Swiss prosecutors confirm about 25 FIFA investigations st. PEtERsBuRG, JuNE 16 (AP): About 25 separate investigations of suspected corruption linked to FIFA and World Cup bidding are being led by federal prosecutors in Switzerland, the country's office for the attorney general said Friday. The office of Michael Lauber confirmed the scale of “footballrelated cases” after securing a first conviction since its FIFA probes began in 2014. Cases were not specified, but criminal proceedings are open against former FIFA officials Sepp Blatter and Jerome Valcke, and some 2006 World Cup organizers, including Franz Beckenbauer. Swiss and American prosecutors worked together on a guilty plea made in a Brooklyn federal courthouse on Thursday by Jorge Arzuaga, a former
employee of Swiss private banks from Argentina. Arzuaga admitted to working with former FIFA finance chairman Julio Grondona and others in a money-laundering conspiracy linked to bribes. Grondona was senior vice president at FIFA when he died in 2014. Arzuaga forfeited $650,000 in “unlawfully obtained” bonuses to the Swiss treasury, the federal prosecution office said. The banker, who worked in Zurich for Credit Suisse and Julius Baer, is due to be sentenced on Jan. 4. Lauber was invited by FIFA in November 2014 to begin investigating suspected wrongdoing in the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding contests which were won by Russia and Qatar, respectively. “To date, 178 reports of suspected money-laundering
transactions have been received in connection with the football investigations,” Lauber's office said. In May 2015, the scope of Swiss and American cooperation to prosecute corruption linked to FIFA was revealed when seven officials, including two FIFA vice presidents, were arrested in early morning hotel raids in Zurich. FIFA was also raided for evidence that day. A further round of arrests, indictments and guilty pleas to U.S. courts were revealed in December 2015. More than 40 soccer and marketing officials have been indicted or made guilty pleas in the American case. In Switzerland, authorities are now analyzing “seized documents containing some 19 terabytes of data,” Lauber's office said Friday.
agaland is not too small a nation as many people think to be. The Nagaland or Nagalim or by what name we call it to be. It doesn’t matter much according to my understanding. The present Nagaland is about 17000sq km (16, 579 sq km) in area and has a population of about 20,00000 (1980602 according to 2011 census). If the entire Naga inhabited areas are counted, it will not come below 80,000 sq km in area with a population of more than 8,000,000. Though the hilly areas are sparsely populated, the plains sectors are densely populated. The half of the socalled Surma Valley in Assam adjoining Nagaland (plains sector) with its lush green extensive gardens is Nagas’ land. The erstwhile British colonial authorities gave it to the Assam province for their vested interest without informing and consulting the Nagas living along the stretches of the area. But till today, the Nagas and the succeeding Nagaland Govt. could do nothing on this great issue. Only during the Chief Ministership of S.C. Jamir the Merapani war in 1985 between Nagaland and Assam, the Nagas won the war but even the liberated areas of land were again given to Assam which was a replica of or was liken the saying, “operation was successful, but the patient died” had been displayed. The present Nagaland state alone is not too small a nation. As per records available to us, there are more than forty (40) sovereign Independent Nations and as members of the UNO which are either equivalent or less than the Nagaland state in terms of area and population, some which are not even half of Nagaland state in terms of population and area, viz: COUNTRY 1. After the Great Second World War, the colonial powers of the world like, United Kingdom, France, Spain, Portugal etc set free many of their respective colonized nations and countries around the world and even many small nations as noted above. Before the British colonial power leave Indian sub-continent, the Nagas had been telling the British imperial representatives that the Nagas would live as Independent people as before the British entered Nagaland when the British would leave Indian sub-continent. These assertions were made by the Nagas before the British authorities verbally as well as in written memoranda on many occasions. But the British authorities so arrogantly and mindlessly left the Nagas under the mercy of the Indian Govt. The British Govt showed their gratefulness to India by granting Independence for Indians help in the World War II. But the British Govt did not extend any gratitude to the Nagas who helped them in World War I and World War II. The final battle between the British and the Japanese was fought at Kohima, Nagaland and with the support and good wishes of the Naga people the British Army defeated the Japanese army in the land of the Nagas. But the heartless British authorities betrayed the Nagas politically and encroached vast areas of the Nagaland and they kept under the control of Assam when they left Indian sub-continent. Under their rule of certain parts of Nagaland by the British, the Nagas were not even cut their hairs in British style, the students were not allowed to wear even half-pants. When great Naga leader A.Z. Phizo and his two friends Khodao and Yongkong went to London to seek help from the British Govt., the British Govt did nothing for the Nagas. Rather they looked upon the Naga Leaders with contempt. But the Nagas still regard the ungrateful British people as Gods and angels. When any British man come to Nagaland the Nagas treats them as Gods. What a pity?? What the Nagas has got some degree of modern civilization is through missionaries from U.S.A and Rome, and we are very grateful to them for their service to the people of Nagaland. Now, if the Indian leaders think and understand that the Naga case is genuine and Naga history is unique, then it is high time for Indian Govt. to recognise the Sovereign Independence of Nagaland.

rickshaw gets animated twist
“C
ars 3" story artist Michael Daley gave a twist to the Indian rickshaw in sync with the Hollywood film as part of the film's promotional activity. He says he had fun researching about the 'awesome' Indian three-wheeler. Daley, who helped create the initial visuals, or the blue print, of the film, has "Cars-ified" the Indian rickshaw, read a statement. "I thought it's pretty interesting to make a 'Cars' character out of a rickshaw," he said. He has never been to India, and he took inspiration from rickshaws that he saw in California. Daley added: "However, they weren't that ornate so I decided to put a little more detailing but not get too crazy because I was trying to make it simple and storyboard type of drawing. “So, I did a lot of research on these awesome Indian rickshaws on the internet and it was very important to decide where to put the face; the eyes and the mouth. "Some of these rickshaws had a boxy feel or a blank spot in the front where the handle bars were and I just chose that place to put the eyes and the mouth." Daley found it interesting to get acquainted about how the rickshaws work. "It sent me down a huge hole of research on how the handlebars attached to the wheels, the carriage at the back; so looking at all of that I had to do a very simplified version to get the basic idea across without getting too crazy complicated so it was really fun to do research on," he added. "Cars 3" is the third part in the "Cars" franchise. The first one came out in 2006 and the second in 2011. Disney-Pixar's "Cars 3" infuses life into a fantasy world of cars where they are not just metal bodies, but talk and feel like humans. It narrates the story of racing car Lighting McQueen. ‘showered Miranda Kerr with gifts'
T
he 34-year-old model - who recently married internet entrepreneur Evan Spiegel - was given a incredible array of gifts by Malaysian businessman Jho Low after her divorce from Orlando Bloom in 2013, according to a civil complaint filed by the US Justice Department. Low, who has been accused of masterminding a $4.5 billion global money laundering operation, is said to have started his efforts to woo Miranda on Valentine's Day in 2014, giving her an 11.72 carat heartshaped diamond to mark the most romantic day of the year. The court filing noted: ''Low gave the 11.72 carat heart-shaped diamond to Kerr, who resides in Los Angeles, as a Val-
entine's Day present.'' Subsequently, Low gave the Australian beauty - who has a six-year-old son called Flynn with her ex-husband - an 8.88 carat diamond pendant, worth around $4.5 million. He is also said to have gifted Miranda an 11 carat set of diamond earrings and a matching necklace, ring and bracelet. However, Low's efforts ultimately proved fruitless and Miranda married Evan last month, after they got engaged in July 2016. The brunette beauty previously claimed that their relationship works so well because they are similar personalities. She shared: ''Evan is real homebody like me. We have little dinner parties for our friends - he loves my
cooking. Both of us are quite conservative even though we come from different worlds. ''But we have common values, a sense of loyalty, family and honesty. I tend to trust other people more easily. Evan is more guarded and reserved. It's a good balance. ''We spend hours talking about everything. He listens to me and he understands me. ''He works very hard and he's proud that I've started my own business. He gives me tons of advice. He's my soulmate.' Source: Contactmusic

LISBON, JuNe 16 (ReuteRS): Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo wants to leave the club and Spain after being accused of committing tax fraud in the country, a report in Portuguese sports daily A Bola said on Friday. The newspaper said its story was based on a reliable source and that the 32-year-old four-times world player of the year had already made up his mind to ask the club for a transfer. It said that Ronaldo was "deeply disenchanted" with the allegations against him. Spanish prosecutors have filed a lawsuit against
the player accusing him of defrauding tax authorities of 14.7 million euros ($16.5 million) by hiding his image rights income between 2011 and 2014. Ronaldo has denied any wrongdoing. Real Madrid said on Thursday that they were confident the Portuguese forward had acted legally. They could not immediately be reached on Friday to comment on the report. Ronaldo led Real Madrid to their 12th European Cup earlier this month after scoring two goals in a 4-1 victory over Juventus in the Champions League final, becoming the tournament's top scorer. Ronaldo, Portugal's
all-time leading scorer, is the latest in a long line of soccer players in Spain -among them Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Neymar -- to be caught up in cases over tax or transfers. Ronaldo has completed eight seasons at Real Madrid since joining them from Manchester United in 2009 for a then world record fee of 96 million euros During that time, they have won the Champions League three times and La Liga twice. In November, he agreed to extend his contract until 2021. He is currently at the Confederations Cup in Russia with the Portuguese national team.
Fan dies after June 3 football stampede in Turin
ROme, JuNe 16 (aFp): A woman left in a coma after a crowd stampeded in Turin at a screening of the Champions League final on June 3 died overnight, the hospital where she was being treated said Friday. The patient, identified as Erika, a 38-year-old local woman who had come to watch the match with her boyfriend, was among more than 1,500 people injured in the panic. There were around 30,000 people in San Carlo square at the time, who had gathered to watch home favourites Juventus
play Real Madrid in the Welsh city of Cardiff. The stampede was apparently triggered by fireworks which were detonated as the match drew to a close. Two other people were seriously injured, including a seven-year-old boy, who was also left in a coma but is now recovering. Some of the injuries occurred after a railing around the entrance to an underground car park beneath the square gave way, causing some of those injured to fall up to two metres (nearly seven feet).
Erika was crushed against a wall, and the compression of her rib cage caused a heart attack that led to brain damage, the media reported. The mayor of Turin, Chiara Appendino, said in a tweet that "words were insufficient" to describe the death, and that the city would officially observe mourning on the day of her funeral. The Italian authorities opened an investigation for involuntary bodily harm immediately after the incident, which will now be upgraded to involuntary homicide.
DImapuR, JuNe 16 (mexN): A week after the conclusion of 5th National Games for Disabled held in Gandhi Nagar, Gujarat where a team of 14 members represented Nagaland, the team and other officials of Special Olympics Nagaland (SON) met DC Dimapur Kesonyu Yhome today here at the DC’s Conference Hall to air their concerns. The meeting was also attended by the parents of the athletes. Area Director of SON Arenla Tzudir, on the occasion appealed to the government of Nagaland to
acknowledge the achievements made by the athletes so far like the other states have been doing and sanction cash awards to national and international medal winners. Tzudir stated that since its inception in the year 2009, SON has not received a single penny from the government and that all its expenses have been borne by sponsors including churches and well wishers. In this regard, Tzudir called for approving the CM Special Development fund for SON coaches and
urged that a yearly budget/grant be earmarked for SON management and activities. Reminding Yhome that SON had approached the government several times with no result, Tzudir produced previously submitted applications and requested the DC to look into the matter. Yhome expressed personal interest on the issue and, on his part, assured to do everything possible to take it to a logical conclusion. He also urged the parents of the differently-
abled to not be discouraged despite their daily struggles and promised to push the agenda to the highest level. In the recent concluded 5th National Games for Disabled, Nagaland won two gold medals in bocce by Yantso and Chumremo, two silver medals won by Alemyanger in 100m race and Rongsen Jamir in badminton. The two bronze medals came in 100m race and shotput won by Pritom Tati and Shitimon respectively. Till now, Nagaland has won one gold and two sil-
ver in international games, 21 gold, 20 silvers and 16 bronze in National championships, and 22 gold, 29 silver and 15 bronze in National games. While the athletes from Nagaland are yet to receive any acknowledgement, other states like Haryana have rewarded its players with Rs 15 lakhs, 10 lakhs and 5 lakhs for winning gold, silver and bronze respectively in world games and Rs. 5 lakhs, 3 lakhs and 2 lakhs for winning gold, silver and bronze in National games/championships.

The 18-year-old's contract expires next year and his decision to reject a new deal was made on Thursday after talks between the player, his agent Mino Raiola and the club. FIFA to clamp down on mobbing of refs at Confederations Cup
ZuRICh, JuNe 16 (ReuteRS): Soccer's governing body FIFA promised on Thursday to take steps to stop what it called the mobbing of referees during the Confederations Cup in Russia this month as part of its so-called "play fair" initiative. FIFA formally launched the initiative jointly with the game's law-making body IFAB on Thursday as part of a strategy "focusing on improving fairness and the image of the game," it said in a statement. Football is often compared unfavourably to other sports because of the behaviour of the players. Remonstrating with referees and surrounding match officials to protest decisions, known as "mobbing", is common, along with play-acting, time-
wasting and other forms of gamesmanship. YouTube has a number of clips of referees being attacked or chased off the pitch by irate players. "Referees, players, coaches and fans all agree that improving player behaviour and respect for all participants (and especially match officials), increasing playing time and the game’s fairness and attractiveness must be football’s main priority,” IFAB technical director David Elleray said. At the same time, FIFA technical director Marco van Basten told a news conference in St Petersburg that mobbing would be one of FIFA's first targets during the Confederations Cup. Referees had also been instructed to be more accurate in adding time for major delays such as inju-
ries and substitutions and to prevent more time-wasting, van Basten said. One of the most common time-wasting tactics used by teams holding a narrow lead is for a player to be substituted and then leave the field slowly, stopping to shake hands with opponents and match officials along the way. "The 'play fair' initiative is a plan for football," said Van Basten. "This strategy aims to promote fairness and integrity, ensure the game is accessible to everyone and optimise the use of technology." The Confederations Cup, featuring the champions of the six continental confederations plus the World Cup hosts and defending champions, will be held in Russia from June 17 to July 2.
