Aree, what is this? After calling them corrupt, blood suckers, thieves, it’s not fair to invite them as chief guests.!
Why do people develop high blood pressure? MOsCOw, MARCH 10 (IANs): Early life changes in brain activity and blood flow may be the reason why people tend to develop abnormally high blood pressure, or hypertension, researchers said. High blood pressure is a condition in which the force of the blood against the artery walls is too high. It is also often called the silent killer because it typically has no symptoms until after it has done significant damage to the heart and the arteries. In 90-95 per cent of people, high blood pressure has no identifiable cause, yet it is a risk factor for diseases of the brain, kidneys, heart, eyes, and other parts of the body, said a group of researchers at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics in Russia. For the study, published in Experimental Physiology, the team investigated physiological changes in a rat model called ISIAH, short for inherited stress-induced arterial hypertension. These rats develop high blood pressure at four to six weeks of age, and this is sustained throughout their lifetime. The researchers compared the high blood pressure rats to a control group with normal blood pressure. As the mice in high blood pressure group grew older, changes in rates of blood flow in certain arteries were observed. In addition, changes were found in the brain activity, specifically a decrease in the prefrontal cortex -- the brain region associated with cognition, decision-making and working memory -- as well as an increase in the hypothalamus -- an area of the brain that controls mood and appetite. “The study of early physiological changes may help clarify the cause of high blood pressure. Understanding this could help us prevent the disease early on,” said led author Alisa Seryapina from the Institute of Cytology and Genetics.

NE in grip of BJP wave, says Ram Madhav AgARtAlA, MARCH 10 (IANs): The entire northeastern region, like other parts of the country, is in the grip of a massive BJP wave, the party’s National General Secretary Ram Madhav said here on Friday, adding the BJP will form the government in Manipur on Saturday and in Tripura next year. “Like all parts of India, a BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) wave has gripped the entire northeastern region. People want BJP government everywhere for good governance,” Ram Madhav said while addressing a mammoth gathering here in Leftruled Tripura. He said: “BJP governments have been installed in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, the party is a part of the Nagaland government and it would wrest power in Manipur on Saturday, after the counting of votes. The BJP will also come to power in Tripura next year after voting out the Left parties.” He claimed that the BJP would come to power in Tripura in the 2018 assembly elections as the CPI-M (Communist Party of India-Marxist)led Left Front government had failed in every sphere and other opposition parties had been unsuccessful in dislodging the Left parties from power. “We would field candidates in all the 60 assembly constituencies to
fight against the Left parties. Once a BJP government comes to power in Tripura, unemployment in the state will make way for industrialisation,” the BJP leader added. “During the 24-year rule of Left parties, unemployment and poverty has increased. No industrial activity has taken place here despite Tripura being a power-surplus state. The Left government misused the central funds and made only the party prosperous,” said Ram Madhav, who is the party’s in-charge of northeastern states and Jammu and Kashmir. BJP leaders earlier announced that Friday’s rally was being organised in protest against the murder of the party’s village committee member Chanmohan Tripura last year and to demand a CBI probe into the killing, but all the speakers dwelt upon the party’s prospects to come to power in Tripura. Friday’s gathering galvanised the local BJP leaders, who claimed that such an enormous crowd had never gathered in the party’s rallies in Tripura. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, echoing other BJP leaders, claimed that the party would come to power in Tripura in next year’s assembly elections. “BJP is the only party that can make
Tripura a developed state. In the name of chit funds, thousands of crores of rupees of people have been looted, while the state government remained a mute spectator,” Sonowal said. The Assam Chief Minister said that all the northeastern states must go together and that his state would always remain with Tripura for the latter’s all-round success and development. “Over eight lakh people are unemployed in Tripura and a large number of people remain poor. If BJP comes to power in Tripura, it will give right status to all people,” he added. BJP’s Tripura observer Sunil Deodhar alleged that the Left government in Tripura had turned the state into a corrupt one, making crime and killing a part of life due to mis-governance. “Over a hundred BJP functionaries were killed in Kerala and many party men murdered in Tripura. Over 11 crore BJP members across the country are protesting these killings in both Left-ruled states,” Deodhar said. State BJP President Biplab Kumar Deb said that the CPI-M had got scared following the growth of the BJP in Tripura, and that is why their cadres were killing BJP members. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar was instigating criminals and nepotism in the state, he alleged.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has asked the Nagaland Government to take up steps to absorb all the Hindi Teachers appointed through Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) in the State. Nagaland has a total of 1379 CSS Hindi Teachers. Interacting with a section of media persons here, Minister for School Education and SCERT, Yitachu revealed that despite the Union MHRD directive, the Nagaland government is presently not in a position to do so and therefore he would be leaving for Delhi by next week before the ensuing state budget session and pursue for continuation of the scheme in the State. “The term of CSS Hindi Teachers will end on March 31 but we will be seeking for extension of CSS Hindi Teachers considering the financial crunch faced by no. The Kohima Unit picketed the SDEOs and DEOs in Tseminyu, Chiephobozou and Kohima. The third phase of agitation will be held on March 15 where the teachers will picket the Directorate of School Education at 9:00 am. According to the Convenor CSS Hindi Teacher,
the State,” he said, adding that taking the CSS Hindi Teachers as state government employees is not a problem, but payment of salary will be the main problem. Nonetheless, he asserted that subsequent steps will be taken to include CSS Hindi Teachers as regular government employees in the State. On the delay in the release of nine months worth salary for CSS Hindi Teachers in the State, the Minister said that there has been short release of fund and the Union MHRD has been pursuing the matter with the Union Finance Ministry by seeking additional requirements. The Minister assured that the department and the government are trying their best for early release of the pending salaries. He therefore maintained that even if ANHTU continues with their democratic agitation, they should also try to understand the position of the department. Further, he asked the protestors not to resort to any form of violence and extend cooperation.
Mhonthung Lotha, the teachers decided to hold the silent protest to show resentment against the department for failure to release the pending salary despite several appeals. The Convenor also demanded that department should release the 9 months worth of salary
along with arrear at the earliest and added that salary should be paid on monthly basis, while the teachers should be absorbed by the School Education Department since they will be completing five (5) years of continuous service by March 31, 2017.
GBs should play the role of peacemakers, says NGBF DIMAPUR, MARCH 10 (MExN): The Nagaland GBs Federation (NGBF) in its meeting deliberating on the roles and responsibilities of the GBs, stated that the GBs should play the role of “peacemakers and not be part with promoters of violence.” This was stated during an executive meeting of the NGBF in Dimapur on March 8. A press note from the NGBF informed that the meeting was attended by district GBs associations from all districts, and presided over by the NGBF President. Referring to the recent unfortunate events in the state with relation to the ULB poll issue, the NGBF stated that it has “from the very beginning opposed the 33% women’s reservation and accordingly we have submitted memorandums to the government followed by several appeals published in print media.” “As an elderly organization we have trusted our government, tribal Hohos, and NGOs, spiritual groups, scholars and intellectual leaders for some meaningful outcome and we still stand on our commitment,” it stated. It however stated that the women’s reservation turning into “such an unimaginable situation that would lead to the death of our precious youth’s lives was not expected.” In an effort to “do something for peace and harmony,” the NGBF informed that it had convened an executive meeting on February 15, “with the only intention to bring peace in our Land.”
“But our innocent and sincere effort was abruptly interrupted by Joint Co-ordination committee (JCC) Summon Letter and we humbly abided by their command and so the GBs of Nagaland (the First institution that existed before the British regime) capitulated before JCC and thereafter, the NGBF was only allowed at the meeting to munch through what they (JCC) query about the GBs of Nagaland… (I)When Nagaland GBs Federation was formed (II) who told you GBs are the custodians of the customary laws? Never do repeat this word in Nagaland or face dire consequences. (III) What powers do GBs have? GBs have no powers and we don’t recognize GBs. (IV) In our tribe, GBs are never included in Important decision making nor account for. (V) Within 24 hrs from now, Nagaland GBs Federation should press release Chief Minister’s resignation,” it claimed. The NGBF expressed pain and surprise at the “dictatorial and condemnation statement of the JCC leaders,” and stated that “such a juvenile utterance about Naga’s historical Identity by the Naga leaders was lamented and condemned by the members present at the meeting.” It meanwhile further appealed to the Naga women groups to “withdraw their cases from the Court and settle the differences within a family.” The NGBF also urged to the Nagaland State Government to “approach any issue in a more sensible and committed manner in future.”
Armed conflicts displace nagaland Vision 2030 stresses almost 140,000 in Myanmar on development of social security
UNItED NAtIONs, MARCH 10 (IANs): Close to 140,000 people have been displaced in Myanmar since September owing to armed conflicts in several western and northeastern parts of the country, the UN said on Friday. Most of the displaced are members of the Rohingya Muslim minority in Rakhine state, who have been affected by the campaign of reprisals launched by the military following the armed assault against three border police checkposts on October 9, Efe news reported. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), 74,000 of the displaced persons are in refugee camps in Bangladesh while another 20,000 have been internally displaced within Rakhine. Another 36,000 have had to leave their homes in the states of Shan and Kachin due to fresh clashes between the Myanmar army and a coalition of ethnic guerrilla groups in northeastern Myanmar. Around 20,000 people have crossed the border into Chinese territory to flee the conflict, authorities in Beijing had said on Thursday. These figures raise the total number of
displaced people throughout the country as a result of armed conflicts and sectarian violence to 260,000, according to the latest estimate by OCHA. The organisation believes that some 60,000 internally displaced persons are in areas where humanitarian aid cannot reach, including Rakhine, despite authorities declaring the end of the security operation on February 15. According to OCHA, several refugees have returned to their homes and Myanmar authorities have allowed a gradual resumption of humanitarian activities. Several organisations have reported that all sorts of atrocities were committed by the military during the campaign, including murder, rape and burning houses. Clashes in Shan and Kachin, near the Chinese border, have killed around 150 people, including rebels, soldiers and civilians, between November and December. Seven armed groups have rejected the peace plan proposed by the Myanmar government, led by Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, while the Myanmar army, which has broad powers under the constitution and veto power in Parliament, continues its offensive.
Elderly population in Nagaland projected to reach 2.23 lakhs by 2030 Our Correspondent Kohima | March 10
Presently the elderly population in Nagaland stands at 1, 39, 494 as per 2011 census, or roughly around 7 percent of the total population. Assuming that this proportion remains constant over the next 15 years, the number of old age people will increase to approximately 2.23 lakhs by 2030. This was stated in the Nagaland Vision 2030 document. The ageing population in the state will most likely affect the trajectory of

socio-economic development in Nagaland. While it is a matter of relief that the people may live longer, this may increase expenditure on social services to mitigate the problem of age.
Pension or social security benefits are some matters that require to be addressed, the vision document stated adding that as the state prepares for a more secure 2030, and as new opportunities and
jobs are created, especially in the unorganized sector, focus should also be to develop occupation based social security programmes for workers with individual contribution and employee contribution so as to lessen the burden of the benefit systems. Establishing health insurances, which are occupation and gender specific will also ensure less burden for individuals as well as the state for old age related health care issues, it stated. “The state must also prepare infrastructure to meet the aged related issues, for instance- establishing district wise and community owned old aged homes to address in dependency ratios, strengthening of PHCs in rural areas to address aged related health issues,” it added.

NSCN (R) cadre held, NSCN (K) hideout busted KOHIMA, MARCH 10 (MExN): One NSCN (R) cadre was apprehended by the Changlang Battalion of the Assam Rifles during an operation in Jungmaisung on March 10. A Press Information Bureau (Defence) release identified the cadre as Private Wangdi Tailong. A Pistol and live ammunition was recovered from his possession, the release stated. In a separate operation, the Khonsa battalion of the Assam Rifles busted a hideout of NSCN (K) in Nogna village on March 10 afternoon. No details of arrest or recovery of arms were made in the release. According to the PIB, both operations were based on “specific intelligence” about presence of cadres trying to “terrorize and attempting forced extortion”.
Exit polls give an edge to BJP in Manipur but CM Ibobi upbeat GUWAHATI, MARCH 10 (THE NEW INDIAN EXPRESS): The exit polls have predicted an edge for BJP in the Congress-ruled Manipur, but chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh is confident that his party will retain power. “I am optimistic about a clear mandate in favour of Congress. This is a kind of a referendum. We are confident that we will win between 40 and 42 seats. Wait till tomorrow (Saturday) and you will know,” he told New Indian Express a day ahead of the declaration of results. The Congress, which has been in power in the State since 2002 under Ibobi, faced the toughest battle this election. It was a resurgent BJP that had made its task difficult. The Congress was virtually sitting pretty until last year when the BJP managed to
divide the House of the ruling party by engineering defection. That the goings for the Congress will not be easy this election was evident when half a dozen party biggies switched their loyalty to the BJP. The Congress was further weakened by the defection of some other stalwarts to non-BJP parties. Emboldened by its Assam feat, the BJP pledged to purge the North-east of the Congress. As part of that mission, the party first set its sights on Manipur despite the fact that the Sangh does not have any influence over people here. The hills that surround the Imphal valley have a large Christian population while valley has Hindus in majority. That the BJP was serious about its prospects here was evident when Ram Madhav rushed to Imphal on the day Assam
Blockade on new diversion of Tadubi–Shajouba-Kharasom Road SENAPATI, MARCH 10 (MExN): Construction on the new diversion of the Tadubi–Shajouba-Kharasom Road in Senapati District has seemingly hit a roadblock. Alleging that the Order of the Manipur High Court [dated April 7, 2016 passed in WP (C) No 374 of 2008] has not been complied with wherein compensation to the affected victims has not been paid, a group of petitioners in a writ petition has warned of a blockade on the construction of the new diversion. The writ petition was addressed to the Commissioner, Public Works Department, Government of Manipur; Chief Engineer, PWD; Deputy Commissioner, Senapati; The Executive Engineer, PWD, Senapati Division. According to statement from the petitioners, the court had directed the payment of compensation to the petitioners within 6 months
from the date of receipt of copy of the order. The petitioners disclosed that copies of the court order were submitted through their lawyers to the concerned departments on April 18, 2016 and April 21, 2016. “In spite of receiving order copies and lawyer’s notice, still the departments are not yet considered our matter nor pay the com-
pensation as per High Court order even after six (6) months statutory period had been lapsed,” the petitioners stated and insisted that they are compelled to issue the notice for blockade. Government authorities are solely responsible for any unwanted happenings in the blockade area, the petitioners warned.
chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal took oath. The BJP faced in Manipur what it had faced in Assam in 2016. The Congress in Assam was in power for 15 years but weakened by infighting in the last term. The party has been in power in Manipur too for 15 years. Although there was no revolt against Ibobi per se, there was discontentment among a section of party stalwarts. The BJP had managed to poach some of them. Until then, the Congress was complacent. It has been a tradition in Manipur that the Congress reaped rich dividends every time the State was caught in a conflict between Nagas and Meiteis (Manipuris). The 40 of the State’s 60 seats in Meitei-majority Imphal Valley virtually decide the fate of a party and the Congress concentrated on these seats to whip up
an anti-Naga sentiment. It was in light of this that the Ibobi government had decided to create seven districts much to the chagrin of the Nagas. The decision made the United Naga Council (UNC) enforce an economic blockade on two national highways, which only widened the ethnic divide. To further polarise voters, the Congress raked up Centre’s Framework Agreement signed with the Isak Muivah faction of Naga insurgent group National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM). It demanded that the Centre makes public the Accord’s contents. The Meiteis are worried about Manipur’s territorial integrity owing to the NSCN-IM’s contentious demand for the creation of ‘Greater Nagaland’ by slicing off the Naga-inhabited areas of Manipur besides

KOKRAJHAR, MARCH 10 (IANS): The Bodo community in Assam on Friday staged an indefinite hunger strike here as part of their agitation to demand a new state. The hunger strike is led by the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU), National Democratic Front of Bodoland-Progressive) and the People Joint Action Committee for Bodoland Movement (PJACBM). Assam and Arunachal. Given the BJP’s presence in Nagaland’s ruling alliance, the Congress had also sought to give an impression to people in the Imphal Valley that the saffron party was tilted more towards Nagas. The BJP hardly had any issues in their manifesto except alleged corruption and under-development during Ibobi’s regime. It tried to woo voters by promising to expose corruption and build a progressive Manipur. “The Congress wanted to gain mileage by making the polls an issue between the Nagas and the Meiteis. But people knew the kind of game the Congress and Ibobi were playing,” former Congress minister and BJP spokesperson N Biren told New Indian Express. He was confident that the BJP would get more than 30 seats.

State-backed rivals force India’s e-payment firms to step up MUMBAI, MArch 10 (reUters): Electronic payment firms got a big boost when India abolished most of the country’s banknotes last year, but rival state-sponsored e-payment services are forcing them to raise their game to hang on to their new customers. Until November’s move, which scrapped 86 percent of all notes to foil counterfeiting and the black market, more than 90 percent of transactions in India were in cash. Electronic payments providers such as market leaders Paytm and MobiKwik, and smaller players FreeCharge, Citrus, ItzCash and Oxigen, seized the opportunity, snapping up millions of customers and merchants caught out by the sudden shortage of cash. Now the government is rolling out three tools to facilitate rival cashless transactions, including a United Payments Interface (UPI) app that simplifies inter-bank fund transfers, and Aadhaar pay, a bank-linked payment service that relies on the national identity card and can be used with just a fingerprint. It has also promoted Bharat QR, another bank-linked ser-
as a standalone business will be massively risky and not viable,” said Vijay Shekhar Sharma, founder and Chief Executive of Paytm. FREEBIES In the early stages of their build-up, the companies haven’t even paid lipservice to viability - giving a free service to customers and merchants, while burning through their start-up funding. Their only source of income has been commissions on phone and utility bill payments. Paytm’s parent company has raised $675 million from Alibaba and more from others, and says its current valuation is about $5 billion, but it has lost about $230 million over the last financial year. MobiKwik, partowned by American Express and Sequoia Capital, has raised about $80 million and is eyeing a $1 billion valuation as it holds talks with investors for more funding. Both have waived fees to enable free money transfers from wallets to bank accounts. Paytm says transfers within its wallets and accounts will be free forever. And they have been using

vice that uses machine-readable labels as the base for a simple payment system, helped by Visa (V.N) and MasterCard (MA.N). It requires only a smartphone and is aiming to sign up 2 million merchants by September. The UPI app was downloaded more than 17 million times
within two months of launch, and transaction values jumped 18 times between November and January, albeit from a low base. So e-wallet providers such as Alibaba-backed (BABA.N) Paytm, the largest, with more than 200 million clients, are adding services to stay a step
ahead. Paytm is betting that its licence to set up a niche bank so it can pay interest on deposits - and connect its systems with the UPI network - will help, and it knows it will need extra services to make the business profitable. “The point is that e-wallets
cash discounts and freebies to lure customers. Mumbai-based management teacher Christina Sundaresan says she started using Paytm when the government pulled the plug on notes, and now uses it so frequently she gets a free movie ticket each weekend. “My laptop repairer, the vegetable vendor and the medical store are all accepting Paytm, so it works well,” she said. But she says she would consider other payment options, including UPI. That will make it difficult for Paytm to withdraw the freebies, but they can’t keep burning cash. “You can’t have a business that says ‘pay a 500 bill and take 250 cash back’,” said Aditya Puri, head of third-biggest Indian lender HDFC Bank (HDBK. NS), which has its own payment app. MobiKwik, which started as a simple digital wallet, is looking to partner with mainstream banks to market a host of financial services on its platform, from mutual funds to loans. It aims to triple its wallets user base to 150 million by end-2017, and raise the value
of transactions five times to $10 billion. It thinks its head start and extra services will keep it on top of the competition, and that banks, latecomers to e-payment, will struggle to match the scale of its operations and vendor network. “UPI is a solution for bank transfers. UPI is not a payments ecosystem today, as there are no merchants on UPI,” said MobiKwik Chief Executive Bipin Preet Singh. Dhruv Chopra, managing director at the Indian unit of South African payments solutions provider Net1, which has invested in MobiKwik, is also betting the start-ups will be too nimble for the banks. But with a large number of small players, many will not survive, he said. Avnish Bajaj of venture capital firm Matrix Partners, which has investments in payments companies ItzCash, Mswipe, and ride hailing firm Ola, which has its own e-wallet, agrees there will be a clearout under competitive pressure. “There’s going to be a bit of consolidation in the e-wallets space in the next two years,” he said.
Paytm to continue free Another ATM in Delhi dispenses Rs 2,000 219 vacancies at CRPF uploading of money note with ‘Children Bank of India’ printed on it Post details, apply before April 25
New DelhI, MArch 10 (IANs): Doing a quick U-turn in about 24 hours, digital payments firm Paytm on Friday suspended the two per cent charge it announced for adding money using credit cards. “We are suspending the two per cent charge on credit cards for adding money to wallet, keeping users’ convenience in mind. We will introduce new features to prevent credit card misuse in adding money,” Paytm said in a blog post here on Friday. With an intent to prevent the misuse of transfer to bank facility at 0 per cent, Paytm had earlier applied a refundable fee of two per cent on add-money through credit cards. “At the same time, we are conscious that this move caused inconvenience to a large segment of our users, including those who are using their credit card for genuine transactions,” it said. The withdrawal of the two per cent charge apparently came in view of losing out to competition after mobile wallet major MobiKwik on Thursday announced that it would continue to offer free uploading of money. “In order to popularise the government’s vision of a cashless society, we at MobiKwik have decided not to charge two per cent on credit card recharges so that more people can transact online without having to worry about additional charges,” MobiKwik founder and CEO Bipin Preet Singh said on Thursday. Paytm had announced the two per cent charge, starting March 8. For those who were charged, the amount was to be refundable in the form of a gift voucher to be used for recharging phones, paying bills, etc. through the Paytm wallet, it also said earlier. Paytm had announced the charges because some users started funding their wallet with their credit cards and transferring it to the bank all for free.
New DelhI, MArch 10 (PtI): In yet another case in a month, an automated teller machine in south Delhi’s Amar colony area dispensed a fake Rs 2,000 currency note with ‘Children Bank of India’ printed on it, police said on Friday. The fake bank note of Rs 2,000 denomination was dispensed from a private bank ATM on Thursday. “The complainant, Chandan reported the matter through a PCR call. The fake Rs 2000 note bore prints of ‘Children Bank of India’ and ‘Manoranjan Bank’ on it,” said DCP(south east) Romil Baaniya. A case has been registered under Sections 489 B (using as genuine, forged or counterfeit currency or bank-notes), 489 E (Making or using documents resembling currency or banknotes) of IPC at Amar Colony police station. A senior Delhi Police officer said that the case has been transferred to the Crime Branch

‘NPF will uphold inherent rights of Nagas & provision of Article 371(A)’ Our Correspondent Kohima | March 10
The Naga People’s Front (NPF) on Thursday reaffirmed to continue to uphold the inherent rights of the Naga people and also protect the special provisions granted to Nagas under Article 371(A) of the Constitution. Newly appointed NPF Spokesperson, Achumbemo Kikon interacting with media-persons here made the affirmation and at the same time asserted to promote and propagate women’s rights. Lamenting the unfortunate turn of events during the proposed conduct of elections to urban local bodies with 33% women reservation, Kikon said the Naga people and civil societies have to be reasonable as following their mounting pressure the highest
office in the State, Chief Minister TR Zeliang had stepped down. “On the part of the government and the party, we thought we will protect the sanctity of Article 371(A) and keeping that in mind election was announced, however, following the mounting pressure from the civil societies, the government declared the election as null and void,” he stated. “… We are hopeful that in the days to come Nagas as a whole will come to terms and we will be able to sail through with their confidence.” In the past “the civil societies used to point that undergrounds should not threaten people,” but considering the recent movement of the civil societies, “it is apparent that the civil societies and public have become more violent than the underground groups and it
has to be discouraged,” the NPF Spokesperson added. He said expression of public should be in a democratic and non-violent way. He further expressed that customs and traditions should not remain static but change with times. Since the highest office in the form of Chief Minister has already “sacrificed”, the Naga people, he said, should be reasonable in putting forth their demand. Further, Kikon maintained that with the installation of the new government but under the same party, the principles and objectives of the government and party remain the same as it is just a change of guard. “We are fortunate to have a seasoned and veteran politician at the helm of affairs and NPF is confident that the State is in the safe hands and we will continue to pursue election
manifesto promised to the Naga people. The CM and his team will continue to make all efforts, specially the priorities in the Naga peace process,” he said. On the presumptions of differences of leadership between Dr. Shurzholie and TR Zeliang, which appeared in the local dailies, Kikon clarified that there is no leadership tussle and no differences between the government and the party. “Party president, Dr Shurhozelie who is now the CM is fully in command of the State,” he said, adding that the NPF also has high respect for former CM Zeliang. “His (Zeliang’s) political career has not come to an end but he has voluntarily stepped down in order to create peace and tranquillity in our state… Zeliang has a long way to go and the NPF legislators might have expressed
the sentiments looking at the future but for now Dr. Shurhozelie is at the helm of affairs,” Kikon stated referring to the statements made by NPF legislators in Peren district recently. On some organisations and individuals propagating “Nagas of Nagaland organisations and solution”, he said NPF has its own Constitutions and the aims and objectives states “to work for unity and integrity of Naga people, by integrating all contagious Naga inhabited areas under one administrative roof and also to provide protection to all ethnic groups who are indigenous inhabitants of Naga areas.” NPF stands for entire Nagas wherever they are, he affirmed, adding “If we articulate Nagas of Nagaland, we will be going back and it will be too unfair on our part, so we should think and see beyond the horizon.”
NPF’s claim of speeches quoted out of context absurd: NPCC Kohima, marCh 10 (mExN): In response to the statements of Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) and NPF regarding speeches of NPF legislators delivered at an event in Peren district recently, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) today stated, “The ridiculous claim of speeches having been quoted out of context since it was spoken in Nagamese is silly and absurd on the part of NPF spokesman.” In a rejoinder, NPCC Media Cell reminded both the CMO and NPF that “people are not fools as they believe to be and the bizarre statements of NPF legislators at Peren were issued by their own press & media bureau and not by some press reporter/correspondent.” The rejoinder pointed out that while the CMO Media Cell has accused NPCC of making a moun-

In a condolence message to Tonlih, Dr. Shürhozelie said, “I am touched by the news that he (Yometh) was planning to travel with you to Kohima tomorrow, and that he was personally undertaking some household repairs when he met with an accident.” “It is the pride and joy of every parent to have sons and daughters helping out with household chores, and to have such a son helping out before embarking on a journey with the mother must have been a proud moment for you, but for the tragedy,” the CM added. “I also understand he was looking after your business ventures at Mon town, which enabled you to spend time for the party and the society at large.” Meanwhile, the CM on behalf of the rank and file of the Naga People's Front (NPF) and Government of Nagaland extended heartfelt condolences to the NPF leader and her family members, and prayed to the Almighty to grant comfort and solace to tide over the pain and grief.

The Future of Jobs: Change Inevitable
A
Samit Basu
s a science-fiction writer, one of the greatest challenges I face is writing a reality that's in any way stranger than the interesting times we live in now, with an additional burden: If reality doesn't make sense, why does fiction have to? At a time where technology is now leading us to fundamental alterations in every aspect of the world we inhabit, it's the job of sci-fi creators and futurists, as defined by author Charles Stross, to find systems that "mimic the patterns of the real world, and give us the chance to infer the intentions of the hidden manipulators. And that's why near-future SF remains relevant -- and dangerous -- in the 'post-truth' era." The world we live in is not only tremendously more complicated than any of us were aware, it is going through multiple transformations at an ever-accelerating pace. But in these times if there's one message we should pay heed to, it's that of another great sci-fi writer, Douglas Adams: DON'T PANIC. A short glance at what appears to be the near future might give us plenty to worry about: political instability and conflict all over the world, posttruth confusion, all of which distract us from the very real and unavoidable crises that will become more and more prominent over the next two generations. The first is climate change, which will require global cooperation and policy shifts to address. The second involves individual choices that will shape our lives even more intimately. How will we deal with the new industrial revolution that will
sweep across the world, as automation changes the very nature of work and careers? What will we do when robots and AI [artificial intelligence] do a lot of the jobs that provide stable careers today? How will humanity in general, and you and I in particular, remain relevant? What will the jobs of tomorrow be in the first place, and how do we acquire the skills to get those jobs? Breathe. Don't panic. Change is always difficult to deal with, and the greater the change, the more time we need to adjust to it -- time that the world we live in
now simply does not give us as we hurtle from crisis to crisis. This is a feeling we are quite accustomed to in India, where we have never displayed much concern about the future. Citizens struggle to cope with the present, and politicians fight for control over the past, while our future remains untended. Other, more advanced, countries are laying the foundations to cope with the post-automation era, because they have the luxury of planning ahead. Germany, Estonia, South Korea, Japan and others are

efore you cut off the tags, peel off the stickers and slip on your newest clothing purchase, you may want to make a stop at the washing machine. Although new clothing may look clean and pressed fresh from the rack, it could actually harm your health. According to Donald Belstio, MD, a professor of dermatology at Columbia University Medical Cen-
ter, new clothes do pose some risk of adverse health effects when worn unwashed. For starters, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Dr. Belstio explained that dyes and formaldehyde resins found on new garments can cause irritation to the skin as well as allergic reactions. Prewashing of new clothes will prevent any residual dyes from staining our skin or other pieces of upholstery, like chairs, and more important, remove any irritants, as New York City

et your home reflect your personality. Use text on your wall, or make the decor ecofriendly to add a tasteful touch to the surroundings, suggests an expert. Mahima Singh, Visual Merchandiser at Furlenco, a furniture rental company, has decoded some of the design trends that could be incorporated in your haven: Text infused: Depending on your personality, decor could either be totally inspired by quirkiness or you could add just a hint of it on some corners and liven it up. This kind of decor brings out friendly vibes and makes it the highlight of your home. The easiest way to try it out is by adding some text cushion covers which are relatable to your thoughts or personality. Combine it with some solid color cushions to kill the chaos, if any. Another way of adding these texts would be to get some texts printed of your choice and frame it along on your photo wall. Paint a section of your wall as blackboard and put on your painter’s hat. That way, you can have a new thought or line to sketch around everyday, and keep the quirkiness fresh forever.
balance is really important and very tricky as Indian decor can end up making your house look too colourful, kitschy and out of sync with your idea of a ‘home you feel euphoric about’.
Eco-friendly homes: A shade of green has been chosen as colour of the year. People across the globe are getting into the trend of ecofriendly homes. These days people want to involve as much as greenery in their homes, be it in interior or exterior. our country means that certain jobs -- such as cooks, craftspeople or real-estate agents -- will remain viable, for social and economic reasons, in India long after they have disappeared in developed countries. It's mostly impossible for career counsellors in the present day to give specific solutions to the problems of what the best fields to enter are. We didn't know a decade ago how app-ruled the world would be, for example, just as we don't know exactly when 3D-printer-operation skills will become essential. In their book Only Humans Need Apply, Thomas H. Davenport and Julia Kirby have discussed a coping mechanism that depends on staying ahead of big data, AI and robots by picking fields of specialization that are human strengths -- jobs that involve creativity, empathy and inter-human communication. Jobs that involve deep specialization, for which there are no machines. Jobs that involve supervising machines, or even designing them and teaching them. The technology of the future isn't your enemy, no more than your smartphone, or your bottle opener, is. Change is inevitable, and embracing it, working in partnership with it and keeping an eye on the future will ensure that you look forward to the unimaginable, with wonder and hope alongside the perfectly natural slice of worry. dermatologist Hilary Baldwin, MD, told Real Simple. But there’s more. Dr. Belstio also warns that cases of lice have been transmitted from clothing tried on in the store dressing room, and there are certain infectious diseases that can be passed along through clothing, including scabies. Dr. Baldwin advises consumers that it’s especially critical to pre-wash pieces like intimates, lingerie, and swimsuits. You may not want to picture this, but it’s likely that you’re not the first person to try on that new outfit—it’s probably been tried on the dressing room, and that’s just the first of many instances of possible skin contact. It’s also likely that your garment came into contact with multiple people during the manufacturing, shipping, stocking, and selling phases. There’s just no real way of knowing how many hands or other body parts have touched your clothing, Dr. Belstio warns. Ew! “In terms of hygiene, washing your new clothes a very smart thing to do,” Dr. Belstio said. “Being a derSwarna Rajagopalan matologist, I’ve seen examples of some strange stuff, so I don’t take his is a shocking reality any chances.” even today. building innovation-based economies that will lead the race for adapting to the robot/AI age. Inevitably, the countries that are the most prepared are the ones that will be affected the least, while developing economies such as ours will suffer greatly if software and robots prove to be cheaper than outsourced labour or tech workers, or opportunities for engineers and medical practitioners to move abroad are eliminated with increased automation. And increasingly, smart AI means that the risk of job irrelevance will be faced
by senior and middle management and highly educated professionals, along with factory workers, as entire fields, from healthcare to stock market analysis, get overtaken by AI. We seem to be doing nothing about this at a policy level in terms of building education or relevant reskilling at the moment -- but as individuals, we can develop the tools we need to exist in the new world. A Deloitte report said last year that machines would take on more repetitive and laborious tasks, but we seem no closer to eliminating the need for human labour than at any time in the last 150 years. In other words, while the new industrial revolution will eliminate a few professions, it will create new ones. Who knew what social media experts, cybersecurity professionals and augmented reality designers were before this millennium arrived? The next wave of tech-led transformation will definitely lead to new, exciting avenues of human endeavour. And even if it's not clear what those will be, one thing is certain: We will have to pick up new skills, adapt and evolve far more than our parents did. A relevant question for us in this part of the world: while all these changes will definitely transform the way we work, how deep will the local impact be? Our recent demonetization showed us that we simply did not have the infrastructure or a strong communication network to be a cashless economy at any point of time in the near future, and such change could only happen in a gradual and ideally organized manner. The abundance of cheap labour in
What is the gender wage gap? Simply put, it is the difference between what men and women earn. This gap arises most obviously because men and women are paid differently for the same work, all other things -- training, experience, talent and delivery -- being equal. That difference, in turn, goes to show how we value men and women. Especially women -- who they are, what they do, what they achieve and what they need. Clearly, we value anything that men do more than anything that women do. In the sectors that employ more women -- the care economy, teaching, the informal sector -- they are all much worse compensated, or not paid at all. Men work in sectors that are better organized, better regulated and better paid. Last year, the Monster Salary Index revealed wage differentials in several industries, across levels. The report found that women in India earn 27 per cent less than men in most places; so if a man got Rs 100 for this article, as a woman, I should expect to get Rs 73.
3D printing, the choices are empowering instead of overwhelming. Whether you’re seeking gilded hardware for your kitchen, or a quirky chandelier for the dining room, 3D printing can make your design dreams come to life with unparalleled ease. Incorporating this trend in lamps, chandeliers, kitchen accessories, artwork, wall fixtures are a few ways to make your home look Why this disparity hurts tasteful and modern. Unequal pay for equal work is only one explanation for why Minimalistic home designs: Minimalistic design is equivalent to women earn less. Being perpetusimplicity. Designing your home ally undervalued has consequences with essentials and not going over- throughout women's lives. mies require and prize technical skill, and a society that keeps women from acquiring more than functional literacy locks them into poverty. With poverty comes vulnerability to displacement and exploitation. In a crisis or downturn, women are the first to lose their jobs and the last to receive compensation. They rarely own assets and, lacking capital, struggle to raise money for entrepreneurship. Patrilocal marriage means they start adult life without the social capital men have that enables them to find work, raise credit or identify mentors. In India, women make up only 28 per cent of the labour force, according to the 2016 Global Gender Gap Report. The report finds that, on an average, women work 537 minutes a day and men 442. But 66 per cent of the work women do is unpaid as opposed to 12 per cent in the case of men. Women just work fewer hours for pay than do men. The International Labour Organization report, Women at Work, estimates it will take 70 years to close the gender wage gap. Traditional society expects that women will put household and family needs above their professional growth. Girls often make educational choices that reflect this limitation; for instance, choosing to train as schoolteachers to accommodate the schedules of their children, rather than to train as astronauts. Although large numbers of girls study the physical sciences in India, the numbers that pursue research careers in pure science or technology are still limited. Women make up only 15 per cent of those who work in the area of research and development, according to the Global Gender Gap Report. Throughout their careers women are likely to take time off to have and raise children or care for family elders. Anticipating this, they are offered less money and less responsibility at every stage. In fact, those women who manage to transcend

all these barriers encounter a glass ceiling in leadership positions. The Global Gender Gap Report finds women make up only 10 per cent of publicly traded company board memberships. The gender wage gap should come as no surprise, then, to any of us. The Constitution of India guarantees the Right to Equality and prohibits discrimination, and the 1976 Equal Remuneration Act reinforces this without prejudice to special measures like maternity leave. But laws are rarely enough. Bridging the gap The journey to wage equality has two other components. First, there should be enforceable guidelines, drafted by the government and industry together, for minimum and equal wages that are then adopted across the board, as part of the drive towards equal and diverse workplaces. Monitoring and penalties for non-compliance should be decided and enforced by each industry. This would work in consonance with proactive efforts to hire and promote inclusively, offering training and mentoring as needed. Second, when gender equality becomes the social norm, the gender gap in wages will close. Tangible initiatives to drive this begin with removing structural impediments to women's growth as individuals and citizens -- access to nutrition, health and education; access to skills training, jobs and credit; and, of course, access to decision-making. The most important obstacle to wage equality, however, lies in our attitudes. When women value themselves enough to fight for their due, and when society values all human beings equally, the gender wage gap will cease to be an issue. Swarna Rajagopalan is a political scientist and independent scholar. She is also the founder of The Prajnya Trust in Chennai, which works towards gender equality.

ar from being limited to a gifted few, the ability to perform astonishing feats of memory, such as remembering lists of several dozen words, can be learned, say researchers In a study published in the journal Neuron, the researchers showed that after 40 days of daily 30-minute training sessions using a strategic memory improvement technique, individuals who had typical memory skills at the start and no previous memory training more than doubled their memory capacity. From recalling an average of 26 words from a list of 72, the participants were able to remember on an average 62 words, the findings showed. Brain scans before and after training showed that strategic memory training altered the brain functions of the trainees, making them more similar to those of memory champions. "After training we see massively increased performance on memory tests," said study first author Martin Dresler, Assistant Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at Radboud University Medical Centre in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. "Not only can you induce a behavioural change, the training also induces similar brain connectivity patterns as those seen in memory athletes," Dresler said. To explore the effects of training on the brain, Dresler and his colleagues recruited 51 individuals with typical memory skills and no previous memory training. They were split into three groups -- two training groups and one group that did not train. The researchers scanned participants' brains before and after training. The two training methods were short-term memory training and strategic memory training. During short-term memory training, an individual practices remembering sequences, a bit like playing the game Concentration. Strategic memory training provides trainees with a systematic way to remember lists. In this study, the strategy Dresler chose was memory of loci training, which is employed by most world champion memory athletes. Using this strategy, items on a list are associated with a remembered place, and users navigate that remembered place as they recall the list. Those who trained using method of loci showed substantial improvement in their ability to recall lists of words. Before training, individuals could recall on average between 26 and 30 words. Afterwards, those with strategic memory training could recall 35 more words on average. Those who trained short-term memory could recall 11 more words. Those with no training recalled seven more words. A day later, those who had trained still showed improvements in recall. Four months later, only those with strategic training continued to show substantial gains, still recalling over 22 more words than prior to training. "Once you are familiar with these strategies and know how to apply them, you can keep your performance high without much further training," Dresler said.
7 reasons why the board exam system is failing students and reading comprehension in schools. 3. Skimming the surface Board exams by necessity explore limited curricula, and this is especially evident in the CBSE Sanskrit syllabus, which emphasises phonetics and repetition, leaving aside the richness, complexity and poetry of India's linguistic legacy. Roots, cases and euphonic rules are being lost in translation, which is not only leading to limiting access to India's living history, but actively creating impediments to the enjoyment of the language of Kalidas, Valmiki and the Vedas. 4. Too much cramming Throughout history, education has consisted of learning, memorising, and retaining important classical and religious texts. In the modern age, however, this time-tested practice has been corrupted to prioritise the temporary recall of information. This not only diffuses depth and scope of knowledge, but marginalises talented students who prefer to think more deeply, slowly and carefully about complex ideas.

s educators, we believe that the Indian board system is leaving its students increasingly less prepared to compete in the international marketplace, which is a failure that has long-term academic, economic and political consequences for India. Strict adherence to doctrinaire systems of memorisation-based learning is leaving its all-important demographic dividend ill-equipped in critical thinking, creative expression and effective communication—the very values that are driving global innovation, which is the real test of life.
5. Too little research The Indian high school system neither incentivises nor prioritises personal or academic research. Students are commonly assigned research "projects" that they are not given the training, structure or support to engage with meaningfully. Research is meant to involve finding and critically comparing points of view and sources of information that allows a student to draw an informed conclusion. Ignoring the established methodologies of analysis, synthesis and evaluation will leave India lagging in the innovation race of the 21st century. 6. Argumentative Indians Developing a complex written argument is one of the most important skills in higher education and professional life. However, many of the students we have taught find it challenging to use the common literary and expository devices needed to structure a coherent and nuanced argument. Modern India's vibrant political and economic institutions are based on the principles of discussion, dialogue and debate. It is vital for the future of the world's largest democracy that its education systems prioritise creative expression and critical thinking.
1. Rote-learning Memorisation is a useful tool—Dr. Eleanor Maguire of UCL famously determined the positive brainaltering effects of rote-learning in her landmark study on London cab-drivers—but excessive reliance on recitation leaves students less prepared to think flexibly and spontaneously, which are vital skills in today's 5. Open letter to Education Minister of Nagaland Yeihtai Konyak Subject: Suggestion to introduce Naga History, Culture, Tradition and Naga Struggle for Self Determination. Sir,
With regard to the subject cited above I would like to bring it to light about the ignorance of our Naga children and younger generation about the Naga culture, tradition, history and even self determination. Sir it is with through education only that we can learn the history of Nagas if it is included in the schools and colleges and university syllabus. Yes we have many educated people but I don't find a person who is educated and well versed with one’s own tradition and culture. Let me cite an example about a guy who is educated as he holds a degree but he is unaware about his own tradition, history and culture which is being followed back at the village and society as he had never come across any syllabus related to our own Naga history, culture and tradition instead we all read only about India and other countries’ culture which we find it difficult as we are not able to see any of it in our surrounding. I do not mean we should not include them at all. Now let me cite the benefits if we include our history, culture and tradition:1) From history we will learn how our forefathers were hardworking and honest in their work. And with history we will know how to make all the local things including basketery, guns, daos, spade etc..thereby giving rise to our own local blacksmith as now most of the Nagas are all dependent on non-locals. 2) We can find new creative and innovative ideas by reading the medicinal plants and herbs which our forefathers used and now we are dependent only on the ready-made pharmacy. By those ideas we could have developed our local pharmaceutical industries too along with the pharmacy from other parts of the world even through collaboration. 3) We could have developed our own fibre industry as we read about the weaving of clothes which is a tradition handed down since immemorial. We could have learned which plants are good for fibre and which plants are used for colouring the fibre. For instance Konyak has a tradition of wearing shawls which are woven. The fibres used in the shawls are not only cotton and silk. They were using plants to make a fibre and even to colour. This study could have lead to emergence of fibre industry instead of depending on other imported fibres. There are many benefits but this is all I can give as of now as it seem my letter is too long. Therefore I earnestly request you to take the above points into consideration and look into the necessary changes in our schools and university syllabus. Chimong Liiziiri: Very good suggestion. Yes. We should not be ignorant about our own history. Many of us know Indian history or other history of the world but we don't even know our roots where we came or origin from. We the Nagas have a separate nation and identity so why not study our own history and give emphasis on it. Our concerned department and politicians should also take note of our brother’s suggestion seriously and take necessary steps. Besides, understanding of our culture, main idea should give about Naga Nationalism and to instill the feelings of Patriotism to every Naga student through schools and colleges by inclusion of Naga History. As a student of history honours during my college days, we know how strong and brave our forefathers were. They were determined not to subjugated or suppressed by any other Nations. But unfortunately, today we are under the control of the so called India. Thus our idea of inclusion of Naga History in schools and colleges should also be to spread the feelings of Patriotism. What we need today is Naga Sovereignty. Good suggestion bro, much appreciated. The articles in this column are compiled by The Naga Blog administrators. Itching is socially contagious, says Study
E

ver wondered why you itch when another person scratches in front of you? A new study shows that scratching, just like yawning, is socially contagious and not a psychological response. According to researchers, itching is highly contagious. Sometimes even its mention could make someone scratch. "Many people thought it was all in the mind, but our experiments show it is a hardwired behaviour and is not a form of empathy," said lead investigator ZhouFeng Chen, director at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, US. In the study, conducted on mice, the researchers found a chemical in the brain that makes them want to scratch when seeing someone else do it. Further, the findings, published in the journal Science showed that the behaviour is hardwired in the brains, rather than a form of empathy with the original scratcher. The chemical, GRP (gastrin-releasing peptide) -- a key transmitter of itch signals between the skin and the spinal cord -- caused mice to scratch when they saw others doing it. When it was blocked, they stopped. "The mouse doesn't see another mouse scratching and then think it might need to scratch, too. Instead, its brain begins sending out itch signals using GRP as a messenger," Chen said. However, when the GRP receptor were blocked in the mice's brains, they did not scratch when they saw others scratch.

Nepal hands over diplomatic note to India over border killing
Kathmandu, march 10 (IanS): Nepal on Friday handed over a "diplomatic note" to Indian authorities over alleged killing on Thursday of a Nepali citizen by India's border security guards, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). According to the Nepali side, Napal citizen Govinda Gautam died when SSB personnel opened fire at the Nepal-India border on Thursday following a dispute over construction of a culvert in No-man's Land. Nepal's Foreign Secretary Shankar Das Bairagi summoned Deputy Chief of Mission in Indian Embassy Binaya Kumar and handed over the "diplomatic note", stating that the Nepal government condemned the incident and called for a probe, Nepal's Foreign Minister's Office said in a statement. Nepal also urged India to stop such inimical activities on the border in future. A diplomatic spat has erupted following the incident, as top political leadership in Nepal and India held several diplomatic
parleys on Thursday and Friday after CPN (Maoist Center), the ruling ally, and other political parties held protests against the killing. Sister organisations of ruling and opposition parties also joined forces for the protest, which saw anger spilling on to streets in various parts of the country. Similarly, after the meeting between Foreign Secretary Bairagi and Kumar, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu said that Kumar conveyed his condolences on the loss of life of a Nepali citizen on Thursday. He informed Bairagi of Inia's decision to initiate an inquiry into the incident at the border touching Lakhimpur Kheri district of India and Kanchanpur districts of Nepal, and requested the Nepalese government to share autopsy and forensic reports to facilitate the inquiry process. Kumar said that the district authorities should maintain close and regular contacts and ensure peace Nepalese students affiliated with the All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU), a student wing of the Communist and order in the area. Gautam a "martyr", will provide Rs 1 million as compensation to his family, conduct Gautam's cremation with full state honours, and provide free education to his children, Home Minister Bimalendra Nidhi announced. India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval also called up Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' to express his grief over the death of Gautam. While extending deep condolences to the family of the deceased, Doval also told Pracahanda that India would support Nepal in every possible way and requested him to provide the post-mortem examination report and other information related to the incident to the Indian side, the Prime Minister's Secretariat said in New Delhi. During the conversation, Prachanda apprised Doval of the "serious" incident and told him about the "seriousness" and "sensitivity" of the incident for Nepal while assuring full support for inquiry. Pra-
chanda hoped that India would take stern action against the guilty after the probe, the statement said. The firing on NepalIndia border has further spiked political and diplomatic tension in Kathmandu as lawmakers from various political parties sought answer from the government over the incident. While accepting a memorandum on Friday from his own party leaders regarding the Kanchanpur incident, Prachanda said that any kind of interference into national sovereignty was not acceptable. On Friday morning, Foreign Minister Prakash Sharan Mahat made a telephone call to India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and sought the Indian position over the killing as India denied that its security force opened the fire. Mahat requested Swaraj to initiate a probe into the killing and ensure that such incident does not recur in the future, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

new delhI, march 10 (IanS): The stage is set for counting of votes on Saturday to wrap up a staggered poll process in five states - the biggest electoral contest ahead of the 2019 general elections -- in what is largely seen as a referendum on Prime Minister Narendra Modis demonetisation move. According to the Election Commission of India, the early trends will start pouring in from 8 a.m. for all the five states - Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa - where thousands of central forces have been deployed at vote counting centres. Stakes in Uttar Pradesh, politically the most significant state in India, are high not only for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) but also for the Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance. The Congress is also eying power in Punjab and Goa and hopes to retain Uttarakhand and Manipur. The fledgling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is also hoping to form governments in Goa and Punjab -- which would mark its first electoral success outside Delhi. The poll panel has set up 78 counting centres across 75 districts in Uttar Pradesh which has a 403-member assembly. Exit polls have predicted a hung Uttar Pradesh assembly with a possibility of the BJP emerging as the single largest party. It has also been predicted to be at top in Uttarakhand and Goa. Any electoral success, especially in Uttar Pradesh, will boost the BJP and reaffirm Prime Minster Narendra Modi's popularity and bold decision of spiking high value notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 that caused
an unprecedented currency crunch in the country. In Uttarakhand, the poll panel has set 15 counting centres. Chief Minister Harish Rawat, who faced an all-round attack from the BJP and many of his old associates who switched to the saffron camp ahead of the polls in February, exuded confidence of winning the elections again. "Based on the work done by the Congress government, we are going to form the government again," Rawat said. Rawat predicted a "minimum of 45 seats" for the Congress in the 70-member house. The opposition BJP, which got 31 seats against 32 for Congress in the 2012 elections, is enthusiastic about its performance. In Punjab, votes will be counted at 54 centres. Exit polls by various news channels and survey agencies have indicated a rout for the Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance in Punjab, with most projecting single-digit seats for the ruling combine. While some surveys put the Congress and AAP in a neck-and-neck finish, one survey each gave a clear majority to the AAP and the Congress respectively. In Goa, votes will be counted at two centres in North and South Goa to declare the winners in 40 seats. A majority of exit polls projections said the ruling BJP will emerge the winner or as single-largest party in the state assembly. In Manipur, counting of votes will be held for 60 seats. In the Congress-ruled state, the BJP is expected to win 25 to 35 in the 60-member house, according to exit vote surveys. The Congress may finish second with 17 to 25 seats
Air India plane loses ATC contact over Hungary, escorted by fighter jets
new delhI, march 10 (PtI): A London-bound Air India aircraft from Ahmedabad on Friday had to be escorted by fighter jets after it lost contact with the Air Traffic Control while flying over Hungary. The plane, with 231 passengers and 18 crew members onboard, lost contact with the ATC due to "frequency fluctuation", an Air India spokesperson said. The aircraft, which took off from the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai at 0700 hours, landed safely at London's Heathrow Airport at 11.05 hours, the spokesperson said.
I-T Department planning real-time issuance of PAN: Finance Ministry
new delhI, march 10 (IanS): The Income Tax Department is considering issuance of Permanent Account Number (PAN) on a real-time basis using Aadhaar, the government informed Parliament on Friday. "The Income Tax Department is considering to issue PAN cards on a real-time basis using Aadhaar's e-Know Your Customer facility. The proposal is at an initial stage of consideration," Minister of State for Finance Santosh Kumar Gangwar said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. "A turn-around-time (TAT) of four hours is prescribed for allotment of PAN after receipt of application from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs portal by the PAN service provider National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) e-Gov portal. The aforementioned facility has been recently implemented and notwithstanding the initial hiccups, PANs are allotted within prescribed TAT," he said. The minister said a mobile application for paying taxes online has been developed. "The mobile application has the functionality to pay taxes and track refunds," he said.
new delhI, march 10 (IanS): Embattled liquor baron Vijay Mallya on Friday offered to negotiate with banks for a onetime settlement of dues and sought the Supreme Court's intervention. "Public sector banks have policies for one-time settlements. Hundreds of borrowers have settled. Why should this be denied to us? Our substantial offer before the Supreme Court was rejected by banks without consideration. (I) Am ready to talk settlement on fair basis," tweeted Mallya. Mallya's renewed offer through a series of tweets came a day after the consortium of banks led by the State Bank of India (SBI) told the apex court that "he had taken it for a ride" and urged the top court to initiate contempt proceedings against him for "wilfully" breaching its orders. In response to the consortium's charge, Mallya tweeted: "Wish the Supreme Court would intervene and put an end to all this by directing banks and us to negotiate and
settle. We are ready." On Thursday, the apex court asked Mallya about the "truthfulness" of his disclosure of assets and alleged transfer of $40 million (Rs 267 crore) to his children in complete violation of the Karnataka High Court order. On Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi's charge that Mallya had been mocking the Indian judicial system, and had taken the Supreme Court "for a ride", the tycoon said the allegations proved the attitude of the government against him. "I have humbly obeyed every single court order without exception. Seems as if government is bent upon holding me guilty without fair trial," said Mallya in another tweet. Appearing for the consortium of banks, Rohatgi told the bench of Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel and Justice U.U. Lalit that Mallya siphoned off $40 million, besides public dues. "It was wilful, contumacious conduct, trying not only to breach the court orders but to put it out of
reach (of Indian courts)," submitted Rohatgi. Mallya received $40 million from British liquor major Diageo Plc on February 25, 2016, as part of a $75-million (Rs 516 crore) deal with it to resign as chairman and non-executive director of its Indian arm, United Spirits Ltd (USL). "Mallya transferred the amount ($40 million) to his children in violation of judicial orders, including those passed by the Debt Recovery Tribunal's Bengaluru branch and the Karnataka High Court," Rohatgi told the court. Mallya also concealed the fact of receiving $40 million and diverting the money to his son Siddharth and daughters Lenna and Tanya, who are US citizens and beneficiaries of the three trusts over which he had no control. Senior advocate C.S. Vaidyanathan, appearing for Mallya, opposed the plea of the banks, saying all his properties were attached under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and he
was entitled to an equal and fair treatment. The consortium of banks had rejected Mallya's one-time settlement (OTS) offer of Rs 6,000 crore made in April 2016. Mallya left India on March 2, 2016, for London days after the consortium of 17 banks moved the Tribunal on February 26, 2016, to hear its July 2013 petition to recover its dues of Rs 9,081 crore, including interest, that was loaned to his now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines. Vaidyanathan also told the bench that Mallya was being made the "poster boy of loan defaulters in India" and accused the banks of targeting him instead of taking up his offer. The bench reserved an order on whether Mallya could be held for contempt of court for not fully disclosing his assets before it. Rohatgi contended that unless Mallya deposited $40 million before the court, he did not deserve to be heard and that he should appear personally.
SC issues bailable warrant ChaNdrayaaN-1 against Justice C.S. Karnan India's first lunar mission
new delhI, march 10 (IanS): In an unprecedented step, the Supreme Court on Friday issued a bailable warrant against Justice C.S. Karnan of the Calcutta High Court as he did not appear before it as directed. A seven-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar asked the West Bengal Director General of Police to serve the bailable warrant to Justice Karnan and sought his presence before it on March 31. The bench also asked him to furnish a personal bond of Rs 10,000. The order came as Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi told the court that Justice Karnan had refused to appear before the court in a contempt case initiated by it suo moto. The court also said that the Registry of the Supreme Court had received a text message from Justice Karnan on March 8, "seeking a meeting with CJI and other judges so as to discuss certain administrative issues which primarily seem to reflect allegations against certain judges. "The letter can't be considered as response to contempt petition. In view of the
above, there is no alternative but to ensure his presence in the court by issuing bailable warrant." Besides Chief Justice Khehar, other judges on the bench are Justice Dipak Misra, Justice J. Chelameswar, Justices Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Madan B. Lokur, Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose and Justice Kurian Joseph. Earlier, the Supreme Court bench had issued contempt notice to Justice Karnan for writing letters casting aspersions on several judges. It is for the first time in the Supreme Court history that it has invoked powers to initiate contempt proceedings against a sitting judge of a High Court. The apex court had earlier said Justice Karnan would not discharge any judicial and administrative functions during the pendency of the proceedings. At the outset of the hearing, Rohatgi told the court that the contempt notice had been served to Justice Karnan and "we got to know that he wrote two letters to the CJI" with allegations against some Madras High Court judges.
Rajya Sabha passes bill to amend Enemy Property Act
new delhI, march 10 (PtI): Rajya Sabha on Friday passed a Bill to amend a 49-yearold law to guard against claims of succession or transfer of properties left by people who migrated to Pakistan and China, amid a walkout by the entire Opposition. The Enemy Property (Amendment and Validation) Bill, 2016, which amends the Enemy Property Act, 1968, was passed by voice vote in the Rajya Sabha despite the opposition demanding deferring of the debate on the draft legislation for a threadbare deliberation next week. The measure was passed by the Lok Sabha in March last year. After this, the Rajya Sabha had sent it to a select committee, following whose recommendations, the government had moved a number of amendments to it. After the amended bill was passed by a voice vote by the Rajya Sabha today, it was returned to the Lok Sabha for final passage just before it was adjourned for the day.
Earlier when the bill was taken up in the Upper House for consideration and passage, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said "many senior members including the Leader of Opposition are not present in the House for a variety of reasons. Therefore the bill should be taken up for discussion and passage on the next working day." Ramesh's views were echoed by other members including Javed Ali Khan (SP) and Sukhendu Shekhar Roy (AITC) who also sought taking up the bill for discussion next week. However, the government decided to take up the bill for discussion today itself and later got it passed by a voice vote after the entire opposition, angered over the government's insistence, walked out of the House. Explaining the rationale for urgency to get the bill passed, Finance Minister and Leader of the House Arun Jaitely said the ordinance effecting the amendments in the Act would lapse on March
14, 2017 and this was a security issue also. Elaborating on the measure, he said it was a principle that government should not allow commercial interests or properties of an enemy country or its citizens. Jaitley said the right of the enemy property should vest in the Government of India and not in the heirs of the citizens of the enemy countries. Despite repeated requests by opposition members, the government took up the bill, which was passed after a brief discussion in the absence of any opposition member. The government was so determined to pass the bill today that over half dozen ministers were present in the House to ensure its smooth sail. Home Minister Rajnath Singh Minister, who was supposed to reply to the debate on the bill, did not say much observing that the Leader of the House has already explained about it in detail and there was no need for his explanation.
lost in space detected orbiting the Moon by NASA radar
new delhI, march 10 (agencIeS): The Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, India's first lunar mission and which was generally considered lost, has been detected orbiting the Moon, says NASA. The discovery was made by NASA scientists with new technological application of interplanetary radar. In addition to Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, the US space agency also located NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) around the Moon. "We have been able to detect NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and the Indian Space Research Organisation's Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft in lunar orbit with ground-based radar," said Marina Brozovic, a radar scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, and principal investigator for the test project. "Finding LRO was relatively easy, as we were working with the mission's navigators and had precise orbit data where it was located. Finding India's Chandrayaan-1 required a bit more detective work because the last contact with the spacecraft was in August of 2009," Brozovic said in a NASA statement on Thursday. Finding derelict spacecraft and space debris in Earth's orbit can be a technological challenge. Detecting these objects in orbit around Earth's moon is even more difficult. Because optical telescopes are unable to search for small objects hidden in the bright glare of the Moon. However, with the new technological application of interplanetary radar, the scientists at JPL successfully located the two spacecraft orbiting the Moon. The researchers believe that the new technique could assist planners of future Moon missions. Although the interplanetary radar has been used to observe small asteroids several million miles from Earth, researchers were not certain that an object of this smaller size as far away as the moon could be detected, even with the world's most powerful radars. Chandrayaan-1 proved the perfect target for demonstrating the capability of this technique, the researchers said. Chandrayaan-1 was launched successfully on October 22, 2008 from SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota. The spacecraft carried 11 scientific instruments built in India, USA, UK, Germany, Sweden and Bulgaria. As per ISRO, the satellite has made more than 3400 orbits around the moon until the mission was concluded when the communication with the spacecraft was lost on August 29, 2009. NASA says hunting down LRO and rediscovering Chandrayaan-1 have provided the start for a unique new capability. (With IANS inputs)

S Korean court throws president out of office, two dead in protest SEOUL, March 10 (rEUtErS): South Korea’s Constitutional Court removed President Park Geun-hye from office on Friday over a graft scandal involving the country’s conglomerates at a time of rising tensions with North Korea and China. The ruling sparked protests from hundreds of her supporters, two of whom were killed in clashes with police outside the court. Park becomes South Korea’s first democratically elected leader to be forced from office, capping months of paralysis and turmoil over a corruption scandal that also landed the head of the Samsung conglomerate in jail. A snap presidential election will be held within 60 days. Park will not leave the presidential Blue House residence on Friday, her spokesman said following the verdict. “For now, Park is not leaving the Blue House today,” Blue House spokesman Kim Dong Jo told Reuters. Park was stripped of her powers after parliament voted to impeach her but has remained in the president’s official compound, the Blue House. The court’s acting chief judge, Lee Jung-mi, said Park had violated the constitution and law “throughout her term”, and despite the objections of

parliament and the media, she had concealed the truth and cracked down on critics. “The removal of the claimee from office is overwhelmingly to the benefit of the protection of the constitution... We remove President Park Geun-hye from office,” Lee told the hearing. Park denied any wrongdoing. The ruling to uphold parliament’s Dec. 9 vote to impeach
her over the scandal marks a dramatic fall from grace of South Korea’s first woman president and daughter of Cold War military dictator Park Chunghee. Both of her parents were assassinated. She did not appear in court and a spokesman said she would not be making any comment on Friday. Park, 65, no longer has immunity as president, and could
now face criminal charges over bribery, extortion and abuse of power in connection with allegations of conspiring with her friend, Choi Soon-sil. MARKETS RISE Prime Minister Hwang Kyoahn was appointed acting president and will remain in that post until the election. “Given Park’s spectacular demise and disarray among
conservatives, the presidential contest in May is the liberals’ to lose,” said Yonsei University professor John Delury. Relations with China and the United States could dominate the coming presidential campaign, after South Korea this month deployed the U.S. THAAD missile defence system in response to North Korea’s stepped up missile and nuclear tests. Beijing has vigorously protested against the deployment, fearing its radar could see into its missile deployments. China has curbed travel to South Korea and targeted Korean companies operating in the mainland, prompting retaliatory measures from Seoul. The Seoul market’s benchmark KOSPI index and the rose after the ruling. The prospect of a new president in the first half of this year instead of prolonged uncertainty will buoy domestic demand as well as the markets, said Trinh Nguyen, senior economist at Natixis in Hong Kong. “The hope is that this will allow the country to have a new leader that can address longstanding challenges such as labour market reforms and escalated geopolitical tensions,” he said. Park was accused of colluding with her friend, Choi, and a former presidential aide, both
of whom have been on trial, to pressure big businesses to donate to two foundations set up to back her policy initiatives. The court said Park had “completely hidden the fact of (Choi’s) interference with state affairs”. Park was also accused of soliciting bribes from the head of the Samsung Group for government favours, including backing a merger of two Samsung affiliates in 2015 that was seen as supporting the succession of control over the country’s largest “chaebol” conglomerate. Samsung Group leader Jay Y. Lee has been accused of bribery and embezzlement in connection with the scandal and is in detention. His trial began on Thursday. He and Samsung have denied wrongdoing. ‘COMMON CRIMINAL’ The scandal and verdict have exposed fault lines in a country long divided by Cold War politics. While Park’s conservative supporters clashed with police outside the court, elsewhere, most people welcomed her ouster. A recent poll showed more than 70 percent supported her impeachment. Hundreds of thousands of people have for months been gathering at peaceful rallies in Seoul every weekend to call for her to step down.
On Friday, hundreds of Park’s supporters outside the court, many of them elderly, who tried to break through police barricades. Police said one 72-year-old man was taken to hospital with a head injury and died. The circumstances of the second death were being investigated. Six people were injured, protest organisers said. Police blocked the main thoroughfare running through downtown Seoul in anticipation of bigger protests. Park will be making a tragic and untimely departure from the Blue House for the second time in her life. In 1979, having served as acting first lady after her mother was killed by a bullet meant for her father, she and her two siblings left the presidential compound after their father was killed. This time, she could end up in jail. Prosecutors have named Park as an accomplice in two court cases linked to the scandal, suggesting she is likely to be investigated. North Korean state media wasted little time labelling Park a criminal. “She had one more year left as ‘president’ but, now she’s been ousted, she will be investigated as a common criminal,” the North’s state KCNA news agency said shortly after the court decision.
‘Lost’ Chandrayaan-1 WikiLeaks offers CIA hacking tools to tech companies - Assange found orbiting Moon WaShINGtON, March 10 (IaNS): India’s first lunar mission -- the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, which was generally considered lost -- is still orbiting the Moon, NASA scientists have found with new technological application of interplanetary radar. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) lost communication with Chandrayaan-1 on August 29, 2009, barely a year after it was launched on October 22, 2008. Chandrayaan-1 is still circling some 200 kilometers above the lunar surface, the scientists determined. In addition to finding Chandrayaan-1, the scientists also located NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter around the Moon. “We have been able to detect NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and the Indian Space Research Organisation’s Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft in lunar orbit with ground-based radar,” said Marina Brozovic, a radar scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, and principal investigator for the test project. “Finding LRO was relatively easy, as we were working with the mission’s navigators and had precise orbit data where it was located. Finding India’s Chandrayaan-1 required a bit more detective work because the
last contact with the spacecraft was in August of 2009,” Brozovic said in a NASA statement on Thursday. Finding derelict spacecraft and space debris in Earth’s orbit can be a technological challenge. Detecting these objects in orbit around Earth’s Moon is even more difficult. Optical telescopes are unable to search for small objects hidden in the bright glare of the Moon. However, with the new technological application of interplanetary radar, the scientists at JPL successfully located the two spacecraft orbiting the Moon. The researchers believe that the new technique could assist planners of future Moon missions. Add to the mix that the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft is very small, a cube about 1.5 metres on each side -- about half the size of a smart car. Although the interplanetary radar has been used to observe small asteroids several million miles from Earth, researchers were not certain that an object of this smaller size as far away as the moon could be detected, even with the world’s most powerful radars. Chandrayaan-1 proved the perfect target for demonstrating the capability of this technique, the researchers said.
WaShINGtON/SaN FraNcIScO, March 10 (rEUtErS): Wikileaks will provide technology companies with exclusive access to CIA hacking tools that it possesses so they can patch software flaws, founder Julian Assange said on Thursday, presenting Silicon Valley with a potential dilemma on how to deal with the anti-secrecy group. If the offer is legitimate, it would place technology companies in the unusual position of relying on Assange, a man believed by some U.S. officials and lawmakers to be an untrustworthy pawn of Russian President Vladimir Putin, to share cyber vulnerabilities stockpiled by a secretive U.S. spy agency. It was not clear how WikiLeaks intended to cooperate with the companies. The group published documents on Tuesday describing secret Central Intelligence Agency hacking tools and snippets of computer code. It did not publish the full programs that would be needed to actually conduct cyber exploits against phones, computers and Internet-connected televisions. “Considering what we think is the best way to pro-
ceed and hearing these calls from some of the manufacturers, we have decided to work with them to give them some exclusive access to the additional technical details that we have so that the fixes can be developed and pushed out, so people can be secure,” Assange said during an online press conference from the Ecuadorean embassy in London. Assange took refuge at the embassy in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden over allegations of rape, which he denies. Microsoft Corp and Cisco Systems Inc , whose wares are subject to attacks described in the documents, said in response to Assange that they welcomed submissions of any vulnerabilities through normal reporting channels. “We’ve seen Julian Assange’s statement and have not yet been contacted,” a Microsoft representative said. “Our preferred method for anyone with knowledge of security issues, including the CIA or Wikileaks, is to submit details to us at secure@ microsoft.com so we can review information and take any necessary steps to protect customers.” Representatives of Alpha-
bet Inc’s Google, Apple Inc, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Huawei, whose products were also featured in the CIA catalog, did not answer requests for comment. Responding to Assange, CIA spokesman Jonathan Liu, said in a statement: “As we’ve said previously, Julian Assange is not exactly a bastion of truth and integrity.” “Despite the efforts of Assange and his ilk, CIA continues to aggressively collect foreign intelligence overseas to protect America from terrorists, hostile nation states and other adversaries.” WikiLeaks’ disclosures this week caused alarmed in the technology world and among consumers because of the potential privacy implications of the cyber espionage tactics that were described. One file described a programme known as Weeping Angel that purportedly could take over a Samsung smart television, making it appear it was off when in fact it was recording conversations in the room. Other documents described ways to hack into Apple iPhones, devices running Google’s Android software and other gadgets in a
way that could observe communications before they are protected by end-to-end encryption offered by messaging apps like Signal or WhatsApp. Several companies have already said they are confident that their recent security updates have accounted for the purported flaws described in the CIA documents.
CIA SECURITY President Donald Trump believes changes are needed to safeguard secrets at the CIA, White House spokesman Sean Spicer told a news briefing on Thursday. “He believes that the systems at the CIA are outdated and need to be updated.” Two U.S. intelligence and law enforcement officials told Reuters on Wednesday that intelligence agencies have been aware since the end of last year of a breach at the CIA, which led to WikiLeaks releasing thousands of pages of information on its website. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said contractors likely breached security and handed over the documents to WikiLeaks. The CIA has declined to comment on the authenticity of the documents leaked, but
the officials said they believed the pages about hacking techniques used between 2013 and 2016 were authentic. Contractors have been revealed as the source of sensitive government information leaks in recent years, most notably Edward Snowden and Harold Martin, both employed by consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton while working for the National Security Agency. Assange said he possessed “a lot more information” about the CIA’s cyber arsenal that would be released soon. He criticized the CIA for “devastating incompetence” for not being able to control access to such sensitive material, and asked whether Obama or Trump were made aware of the breaches. Assange’s group released Democratic emails during the 2016 presidential campaign that U.S. intelligence agencies say were hacked by Russia to try to tilt the election against Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. He is regarded with distaste by many in Washington, although Trump, then the Republican candidate, supported the group’s email releases last year.
Karate and wooden guns - How new insurgent group stoked Myanmar crisis SIttWE, MYaNMar/ LEDa, BaNGLaDESh, March 10 (rEUtErS): The emergence of Harakah al Yaqin, the first Rohingya Muslim insurgent group to organise in Myanmar in decades, signals a dangerous new phase in a crisis that is increasingly attracting the attention of extremists in Pakistan and the Middle East. Unknown six months ago, the group has ignited a conflict in Rakhine State that has marred Myanmar’s transition towards democracy and confronted leader Aung San Suu Kyi with her biggest crisis yet. “Our people have been persecuted for 50 or 60 years, so support for the insurgents is there,” said Rahim, a teacher from the village of Dar Gyi Zar, who is among more than 70,000 Rohingya who have fled to Bangladesh since the fighting began. Communal tensions have long-festered in northwestern Rakhine State, where 1.1 million Rohingya Muslims live in apartheid-like conditions, often despised by the Buddhist majority. Serious ethnic clashes erupted in 2012,
but the recent violence is the first sign of a Rohingya insurgency entrenching itself inside Rakhine since at least the early 1990s. Reuters spoke to around a dozen Rohingya from villages in the conflict zone about the activities of the group in their area, as well as a police officer who led the interrogations of several captured insurgents and a military intelligence officer. Their accounts, which could not be independently verified, shed new light on how the group prepared for its campaign. They describe how a small group of leaders, including one born to Rohingya parents in Pakistan, recruited several hundred young men, training them clandestinely for months in fields and forests. Mohammed Shah, 26, from Yae Khat Chaung Gwa Son village, was not approached to join the group, but said he was aware of its activities for about six months before it launched its first attacks in October. “I support them,” he said. “We have been persecuted for decades and they are working to bring us justice.”
CLANDESTINE TRAINING On Oct. 9, Harakah alYaqin - Arabic for “Faith Movement” - launched 3 coordinated attacks on separate police border posts, killing 9 officers. The group claimed responsibility for the attacks in videos posted online. The security operation launched by the military in response has been beset by allegations of mass killings and gang rapes that the United Nations says may constitute crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing. The crisis could not come at a worse time for Suu Kyi, who’s near yearold government is contending with renewed ethnic insurgencies elsewhere in Myanmar that threaten to undermine the Nobel laureate’s signature peace process. Myanmar’s government says the allegations of human rights abuses are “serious”, but that security forces are dealing with an insurgency that threatens the region’s stability and development. Residents of northern Rakhine and security officials told Reuters that HaY had organised its cam-
paign across the border in Bangladesh, and that it involved leaders with links to Pakistan. In the village of U Shey Kya, adult men were approached in early 2016 and asked to join the group, 3 residents told Reuters. Some agreed and took part in training, they said. A senior member of HaY, Mohammed Noor, was last month sentenced to death for leading one of the 3 attacks, the first such verdict to be handed down. Police Captain Yan Naing Latt, the lead interrogator of suspects at the jail in state capital Sittwe, told Reuters the group’s goal was to seize control of the northern part of Rakhine to create a “Muslim democratic state for the Rohingya”. “There were six cells in total,” said Yan Naing Latt, but only three were able to successfully launch attacks. “Leaders like Mohammed Noor were sent with some weapons to each village, recruited and trained locals there.” “They trained karate and practiced firing guns,” said Yan Naing Latt. Some of the attackers came from refugee camps in Bangladesh and brought with

Rohingya government - which says
the Rohingya are interlopers from Bangladesh - rather than religious ideology. Nonetheless, diplomats and analysts say the involvement of foreign militants has the potential to radicalise and enflame the conflict. Myanmar’s government has said it believes Ata Ullah and another HaY member, a Pakistani citizen, attended “terrorist training” with the Taliban in Pakistan. While no firm
evidence linking HaY to extremist organisations has emerged, several Islamist groups, including al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, and Islamic State have raised the Rohingya cause in their publicity materials. A senior Myanmar military intelligence officer said HaY has tried to organise resistance since 2013, but was only able to gain a foothold and attract funding in 2015. The group was still active, the officer said, with the military expecting further attacks. A fresh video surfaced in February showing young, masked men wielding swords and sticks, calling themselves Harakah al-Yaqin. Reuters could not verify the authenticity of the clip. “They are moving from one place to the next and organising short 5 to 10-days-long training sessions in different villages,” said the intelligence officer. While that suggests the group is becoming entrenched, the violence its campaign has unleashed has cost it some support. “We’re ready to inform the government if the people involved in the training come back,” said the U Shey Kya villager.

IOC imposes financial sanctions on Kenyan National Olympic Body
Nairobi, March 10 (iaNS): The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has slapped financial sanctions on its Kenyan affiliate barely 48 hours after its top officials revolted against proposed reforms. On Tuesday, 11 of 13 Kenyan National Olympic Committee (Nock) Executive Committee members voted against the adoption of an IOC-backed new constitution that seeks among other things to limit their power, reports Xinhua news agency. IOC Head of Media Relations and Monitoring, Emmanuelle Moreau, confirmed on Thursday evening that the international body had cracked the whip against the Nock pending an Executive Board meeting next week where Kenya's fate will be decided. Moreau said the IOC is extremely disappointed by the outcome of the Nock extraordinary General Assembly which did not
address governance issues in the appropriate way. "This goes against the tripartite agreement (IOC-NOC-Government authorities) reached in September 2016 in Lausanne and the roadmap and discussions with the NOC over the last few months," he said in a statement. Moreau said the IOC is now putting on hold all payments of subsidies to the Nock until a decision of the IOC Executive Board is taken at its meeting next week. Withdrawal of IOC funding is bound to cripple the operations at Nock led by pioneering Olympics Laureate, Kipchoge Keino, the retired distance running legend who is widely regarded as the father of Kenya's athletics. Keino who is also an honorary IOC Member and long-serving Nock president, led the majority of his Executive to vote against the proposed constitution at an extraordinary
stakeholders meeting in Nairobi. Needing a two-thirds majority to be adopted, the draft regulations supported by most affiliate federations prevailed with a vote of 19 to 13 that fell short of the threshold that would have paved the way to new Nock elections by the end of this month as the IOC backed roadmap suggested. The IOC Board is expected to ban Kenya from the international Olympic family or impose heavy sanctions against individual officials responsible for scuttling the path to reforms that started in earnest last December during its meeting on March 15 and 16. "The result showed we believe in a fair game. It is the wish of Kenyans and the next elections will be held in June under the old constitution," the Nock boss said following the meeting. The IOC had sent Jerome Poive, Head of Relations on Institutional
Governance and Mohamed Azzoug, chief of staff at the Association of National Olympics Committees of Africa (ANOCA), to Nairobi as observers to oversee the voting process on Tuesday. However, they left in a huff following the outcome, as the threat of an Olympic ban for Kenya loomed large. Retired former world marathon record holders and Olympic silver medallists, Paul Tergat and Catherine Ndereba, broke ranks with the other members of the Nock Executive in voting for the new constitution. On the other side of the divide that pitted the administrators against affiliate federations keen to push them out of power, representatives of the Kenya swimming and Kenya taekwondo federations voted to shoot down the document alongside Keino and Co against the wishes of their colleagues.

Root, Hales guide England to clean sweep against Windies
barbadoS, March 10 (iaNS): Centuries by Alex Hales and Joe Root helped England complete a 3-0 clean sweep of the West Indies after the hosts were thrashed by 186 runs in the third and final One-day International (ODI) at the Kensington Oval here. Put in to bat, England racked up a sizeable 328, but the home team could muster only 142 in 39.2 overs in its reply on Thursday. This was the Caribbean side's heaviest loss against England in an ODI in terms
of runs, while it also marked the first occasion since 1991 that England had swept an ODI series against the West Indies 3-0. Back in the side after a two-month injury lay off, Hales fired a 107-ball 110 to virtually take the game away from the hosts with a record 192-run second wicket stand with Root, who followed up his match-winning 90 not out in the second game in Antigua with a 108-ball 101. West Indies needed victory to avoid a series sweep
and also pick up valuable ranking points that would help the team earn automatic qualification for the ICC World Cup 2019, but the team came up short. Dropped catches hurt the Caribbean side, with Root let off twice early in his innings. Alzarri Joseph, the 20-year-old Antigua pacer looked the most threatening of the West Indies bowlers though he was on the expensive side, picking up 4/76 in 10 overs. Skipper Jason Holder, who won the
toss for the third consecutive time, did well while opening the bowling to return 3/41 in 10 overs. In response, West Indies went into the backfoot straightway after losing three early wickets with just 13 runs on the board inside the first four overs. They quickly slid to 45/6 by the 17th over. Jonathan Carter topscored with 46 in the middle-order to delay the inevitable. For the English side, Chris Woakes, who was
named the man-of-theseries, and Liam Plunkett, took three wickets each. Pacer Steven Finn also played his part with two wickets while leg-spinner Adil Rashid finished off the affair with the last wicket of Devendro Bishoo. Brief Scores: England 328 (Alex Hales 110, Joe Root 101, Alzarri Joseph 4/76, Jason Holder 3/41) beat West Indies 142 (Jonathan Carter 46, Alzarri Joseph 22, Chris Woakes 3/16, Liam Plunkett 3/27) by 186 runs.

The danger of inviting God's curse on our people Dr.Tseibu Rutsa
Naga Christians, Let us see reflect where we are in the light of Exodus 20:17. What happens when we use God's name wrongly? It’s call breaking the law of God. In other words, we are not allowed to use God's name in vain under any circumstance. We are only allowed to use His name for teaching His word and when praying to God. Breaking these commandments is punishable in the sight of God. Verses 4 -7 states: “You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them, for I the LORD your GOD, am a JEALOUS
B
GOD, PUNISHING the children for the sins of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing LOVE to a thousand generations of those who love and keep my Commandments. You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your GOD. For the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuse His name” (Bold letters, added). No one who uses God's name for their personal gain can escape the wrath of God. But when I look at what’s happening among our leaders, I’m so sad to see our politicians and national workers using the name of God for their own benefits for too long. By doing so, we have been inviting the judgement of God upon ourselves. Especially, on March 8th caption in Nagaland Post
appeared as "Ministers, Parl, Secys back TR to return as CM.” In the same report, Mr. CL John minister of RD said, “TR Zeliang was "crucified for no fault of his." He further claimed that NPF would continue "till the second coming of Christ." But may I remind what we are all forgetting: This present Government has blood in their hands. The precious brothers’ blood are crying out from the ground to GOD (Gen 4:9-13). Let’s not forget that God is not sleeping. But so far we see no sign of remorse or repentance from the present Government leaders, which shows that our politicians can take public lives if need be and get away with it. They have made Nagaland to become lawless Land. Recent incident shows that our leaders have no concern
for the citizens of Nagaland as long as they can hold on to their table of power. More so, they have no respect for the Lord Jesus Christ in their leadership, which actually is been given to them by God, good or bad. Let us see what the Bible says when God’s name is used wrongly. First, they seem to be just Christian faith on their lips but not been born again by the spirit of God. Most of them, by their actions, show that they are just hypocrites, making a profession of God's name, but not living up to that profession. “Having the form of Godliness and denying the power of it” (II Tim 3:5); they Worship in vain (Matt. 15:7-9); their oblations are vain (Isaiah 1:11,13-14); their religion is vain, (James 1:26). These are all against the law of God.
ON IGNORANCE
eing ignorant is not bad; ignorance is not something evil or anything to be ashamed of. Nobody knows everything about every topic under the sun. The problem with many educated Nagas is that we are ashamed to admit our ignorance on any subject. We think that once we have received a degree on a certain subject, or we know something about it, we have become the repository of all knowledge on everything, and we brook no dissent on our views from others, right or wrong. I bring this up in connection with the views of some people who do not agree with my opinions that our various Dailies have been kind enough to publish. I am a novice in the art of debating/arguing on the internet; in my case, Facebook. For the first time ever, I realised that anyone could spew his opinions, wise or stupid, without any moderator; and to make matters worse, you couldn't be sure if a person was operating under a real or assumed identity. But
this experience has taught me that we Nagas have still a long way to go in creating awareness among people and in convincing others of the validity of the stands we take on various issues. The first issue concerns, yours truly being accused of having/possessing 'Google Knowledge' by a couple of people on Fb. I guess they mean it in a derogatory sense. But I ask you, "How many Nagas have walked into a library, not your school, college or university library; but a real library containing books, magazines and newspapers on every topic in every genre?" I would advise those who haven't to find one, walk into it and get a sense of what it feels like to be surrounded by hundreds of thousands of books. You'll realise that what you so proudly claim to know is less than nothing in the ocean of knowledge. After having done that, picture all the libraries of the world in one place, under one roof and then you'll have a slight idea of what the internet is; and that Google is the key to it. All
the world's knowledge is contained within the internet but it is only when you possess 'Google Knowledge' that you can access it. You have to know what you are searching for, if you know nothing, you get nothing from the internet. So, I am proud that I have 'Google Knowledge'. The internet is more than Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social networking sites, more than for online shopping and can be used for better purposes than to surf for pornography. The second issue concerns the comments and opinions posted and passed around the various sites on the internet. Unless you are operating under a false identity, you should be aware that every comment you pass brings you under the scrutiny of your fellow users. So your wisdom and insight or your stupidity and idiocy is there for all to see. The third issue concerns posting differing opinions. A friend mentioned that my comments indicated my dislike for
Second, they are breaking the law of God. If they, and we, make promises to God, but fail to keep our vows to the Lord, we are taking His name in vain (Matt. 5:33, Eccl. 5:4, Gal. 6:7). This means we are against the law of God. Third, cursing in the name of the Lord is tantamount to blasphemy and that is against the law of God (Lev. 24:15-16). Fourth, false swearing in the name of God is forbidden (Lev. 19:12, Deut. 10:20, Matt 5:33-34, and James 5:12). For that matter, taking an oath in God's name means that we are showing others that we could be trusted because God is trustworthy. But when our actions betray our oath, we are violating the law of God. Fifth, to propane the name of the Lord is against the law of God (Lev. 18:21, 19:12,
22:32). Sixth, we are guilty of breaking God’s law if we profane His name by committing abnormal sexual relations (In Lev. 18:6-24). Seventh, the Bible says that we are against the law of God when we are stealing, doing false dealings, and lying (Lev. 19:11). Also, our excesses in wicked living also seem to be bringing us closer to God’s judgement. For this, read this Romans 1:2132. I’m very afraid we Nagas are living on this Bible passage as God seems to have allowed evil to prevail in our land, because we have endorsed wickedness for very, very long time. I believe it’s high time we socalled Pastors, Reverends, denomination/council leaders to sound the trumpet of prophetic warning in the churches. How can we be silent spectators any
further when our people are dying spiritually and politically in our land. If we allow this situation to continue any longer, there wouldn't be much Christian influence in our land. Soon we may not have any one who can stand and defend for the true faith of the Nagas. And, we may not have leaders who can protect the rights of the Nagas politically and historically, also. By the way, who says Pastors and Church leaders can not involve in civil administration and political affairs! As a matter of fact, it’s time the righteous people to lead us to the promise land. After all, its truly a Christian state, let the true Christian leaders bring a stoppage of this wicked period of time once for all and pave the way for the next generation. God Bless NAGALAND.
SHARING OPINION people who disagree with my opinions; but I beg to disagree. In any argument or debate it is common knowledge that the following take place:1. You put forth your opinions and views 2. You expect those who disagree with you to put forth their opinions. 3. Both of you defend your opinions or try to prove the other wrong, all the while maintaining logic and reason. It is when a person blindly, without logic or reason, opposes the views or opinions of others, that ignorance becomes an obstacle. The person may be motivated by factors such as family, tribal loyalties, political affiliations or just simple bigotry. But in doing so, we leave the realm of ignorance and descend into the depths of idiocy; we close the door to awareness and enter a world of the blind leading the blind. God forbid that we Nagas ever set foot in that world. GOD SAVE OUR NAGALAND Kahuto Chishi Sumi G.B. Hevishe Village Dimapur

my shortcoming or failure or it may be for my encouragement but all are for my own benefit. I have confidence on the leaders in whatever field. Several times, I outrightly declined myself to get involved in political discussion saying,” I do not know politics, don’t invite me for any political discussion, I

If the conviction is pure, there is no question to get discouraged or daunted. Any thing which is against the conscience is vanity so stand for the truth and the truth only so that
unnecessary creation of problems may be avoided. Make use of the opportunity God has graciously given to us to mend, to heal, to save and to console the people as the instruments of God. If you are really a channel of peace, the current problems you have been undergoing are the blessing in disguise for you.
Theological Education as Praxis
y six years of theological journey has given me a serious thought on theological education as praxis and not something abstract. And I would like to clarifyone of the false notions regarding theological academy. In the theological circle, many doubt and question how to implement theological education in ministries or in day to day life activities saying, “These are simply theoretical and bookish!!” But I see a whole lot of praxis in the books and theories provided that we contextualise it. As an academic community, we teach, read, learn, study, and write. To some extent, we are armed with solutions and responses for questions and issues. But the question is how far are we implementing it?For e.g. we do so much onpost-colonial readings in all the disciplines, be it biblical, communication, ethics, his-
tory, mission, counselling, ministry, religion, or theology. We critic Eurocentrism and emphasize in looking at things from our experiences. But how far are weimplementing it? Are we just a solution learner or solution giver rather than solution implementer? If we do not implement what we are learning then we are adding fuel to the fire onthe false notion that theological education is bookish and nothing practical. Unless we contextually apply the academic studies, we will continue to be a bunch of people who have a pot full of rice not knowing how to cook and eat. I want to bring home my thought by noting that knowledge is like the rice, contextualising the scholars’ views in our experiences is like cooking, and implementing it, is like eating the rice. Until we apply the theories in life’s activities, we cannot givea chance to theological
education to live with us.The fruitof education does not contain in the grades that we score or in the degrees that we hold, rather it contains in the constructive changes we bring by implementing what we learn. We will be in a sorry state if we consider education as mere bookish or mere degree supplier. Theological education is never static, and we cannotdemarcate academic learning from ministries or life’s activities.Education is alive, ready to push us, if wecan relate it in our daily life experiences. Therefore, as many theological academiesprepares for the graduation and as we venture into different fields and ministries, may we be always reminded that we are to contextualise our learning, give life to the theories and testifytheological education as praxis. he premiere date of HBO's medieval fantasy series "Game of Thrones" was announced with fiery fanfare on Thursday, as a block of ice was melted live online to reveal the July 16 start of the new season. More than 100,000 people watched the hourlong Facebook Live stream of a block of ice being melted slowly by blasts of fire. It was interrupted by a few technical difficulties when the stream cut to black. The highly anticipated seventh season of "Game of Thrones," taglined "The Great War is Here," has been moved to summer from its usual spring air date this year as filming of the show was delayed to capture scenes of winter for the show's fictional realm of Westeros. Emmy-winning "Game of Thrones," based on George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" books, follows the epic fantasy of a multigenerational struggle for control of the Iron Throne seat of the Seven Kingdoms. A teaser trailer released by HBO on Thursday shows the crests of the warring families crumbling to ash, with voices of key characters heard speaking phrases from past seasons in a timeline of events that have led to the battle. At the very end, the voice of resurrected Night Watch leader Jon Snow says, "The same thing coming for all of us. There's only one war that matters. The great war. And it is here." "Game of Thrones" is the most-watched show on Time Warner Inc's premium cable network HBO, averaging around 25 million viewers for its sixth season. he Victoria's Secret Angels could be heading to China this year. The lingerie label's famous annual fashion show is reportedly going to be held in Shanghai this year, reports WWD. The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Victoria's Secret for confirmation. Victoria's Secret opened its boutique in Shanghai on Wednesday with help from VS models Alessandra Ambrosio, Josephine Skriver, Sui He and Ming Xi (who was born in Shanghai). Each has been posting about their trip on Instagram. Last year's show took place in Paris, with performances by Bruno Mars, The Weekend and Lady Gaga. Previous presentations have been held in New York, Los Angeles, Miami and London. The move to Shanghai reflects the label's strategy to expand its presence in the Chinese market. In addition to the 26 beauty- and accessories-only stores opened in mainland China, the fashion trade notes that there are plans to open a flagship in Hong Kong later this year too. With the location change, perhaps VS will be more mindful of its designs after being accused of cultural appropriation with some of its looks last year (Elsa Hosk's dragon wrap, for example). China-based digital publication Jing Daily reported that China's social media users were upset, arguing that traditional Chinese elements are meant go with styles more "reserved" and "linking it with bikini outfits just makes it slutty," said one Weibo user. Meanwhile, some praised the brand for paying tribute to Chinese culture. Source: Hollywood Reporter

A source said: "Taylor was so young when they dated, she wasn't ready for a serious relationship, but now she's showing Jake how much she's matured. She's excited to see where things go." In 2016, during an interview with Howard Stern, Gyllenhaal talked about his desire to settle down. He said: "Oh, I hope to get married. I think it's hard for everybody, man. But I also think at some point, you just decide to grow up, you know?" "A lot of the time I need to call my mom and talk for a really long time, just to remind myself of all the things that are great and all the things that matter. Disney's Live-Action D 'Aladdin' holds open casting call for leads
isney is on the hunt for the next Jasmine and Aladdin. The Guy Ritchie-directed live-action adaptation of the classic animated feature has sent out a casting notice calling for Middle Eastern actors in the 18 to 25 age range to audition for its leads, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Aladdin is set to be a movie-musical (a la the upcoming Beauty and the Beast reimagining), so the notice reads "must be able to sing" and says dancing experience is "a plus." Shooting will take place over an approximate six-month period, from July 2017 to January 2018, in the U.K., with rehearsals beginning in April. Scott Weinger and Linda Larkin voiced Aladdin and Jasmine in the 1992 animated feature, which follows a street-wise youth who tries to woo a princess and defeat an evil sorcerer after he stumbles upon a magic lamp and is granted three wishes by a genie trapped inside. Big Fish writer John August penned the screenplay for the feature, which is being produced by Dan Lin via his Lin Pictures banner, with Jonathan Eirich executive producing. Recently, Disney had a similar casting call for the leads in the live-action Mulan remake, asking that those who audition speak "fluent English and Mandarin Chinese." The casting notice was posted on Twitter earlier on Thursday. Source: Billboards

BCCI brokers peace with CA, withdraws its complaint
MUMbAI, MARCH 10 (IANS): Putting an end to the feud between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Cricket Australia (CA), the Indian board has decided to withdraw its complaint against visiting captain Steve Smith and batsman Peter Handscomb over the Decision Review System (DRS) issue. Hours after the BCCI lodged an official complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC), BCCI CEO Rahul Johri and his Australian counterpart James Sutherland had met late Thursday and decided to restore focus on the ongoing four-Test rubber amidst the increased attention that emanated during the course of the second Test in Bengaluru. Following the meeting, both the boards issued a joint statement which read: "BCCI and CA have resolved to restore focus on the ongoing series amidst the increased attention towards issues which have emanated during the course of the second Test match in Bengaluru." "CEO of BCCI Rahul Johri and CEO of Cricket Australia James Sutherland met at the BCCI headquarters here on Thursday and, in discussing the matters at length, agreed the impor-
tance of bringing back the focus to the game and the much anticipated next Test match in Ranchi." Announcing the end of the war of words between the two sides, Johri said: "India has always cherished a contest with Australia and over the years, the performances of both, the teams and the players, are testimony to the level of competitiveness that exists between these two teams." "While having responded officially to one such incident which happened in the last Test, together, we believe that the focus of the teams and the joy they provide to the fans, should not be diluted and it is imperative to ensure that the rest of the series, which promises a great cricketing contest, not be compromised." "Subsequently, BCCI will withdraw the complaint filed with ICC with an expectation that the two captains will meet prior to the Ranchi Test and commit to lead their teams by example and play the rest of the series, in the right spirit, demonstrating that the players from both teams are true ambassadors for their respective countries," he added. Sutherland, who had earlier termed India skipper Virat Kohli's allega-
tions on his opposite number Smith seeking advice from the dressing room on the usage of DRS, as "outrageous", said: "A series between India and Australia is bound to generate considerable excitement for fans in both the countries. On the field the two teams are fierce competitors who represent their countries with pride." "As we have seen this week in Bengaluru, with so much at stake, tensions can bubble over. We are half way through what has already been a riveting series - and there is still much to look forward to." "In discussing the relevant issues in depth, we have agreed that it is in the best interests of the game to put these differences aside and clear the way for the focus to be on the cricket, and the remaining matches of the series," he added. Both Australia and India have won one match each, with the visitors winning the opening Test in Pune by 333 runs before the hosts staged a dramatic comeback in the Bengaluru Test to pocket it by 75 runs. With the series locked at 1-1, all eyes are now on the third match, starting March 16 at Ranchi. The four Test will be played in Dharamsala from march 25.
Torres eager to return after head injury scare
MAdRId, MARCH 10 (IANS): Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres, who was discharged from hospital a week ago after being knocked unconscious at the Estadio Riazor stadium during the football match against Deportivo La Coruña, said he is now fine and eager to join his teammates on the field soon. In an interview posted on Atletico Madrid's official website on Thursday, Torres said: "Well, well. I am doing very well. It was a big fright for all, probably least for me because I don't remember of the moment
of the blow until I recovered consciousness at hospital, but I understand the magnitude of what happened when I see the video in real time," reports Efe. Torres was taken to hospital after sustaining an alarming head injury during the 1-1 draw against Deportivo, after colliding with Alex Bergantiños as they both went to head the ball. "I suppose they were endless minutes for all the people who love me, as my wife, my parents and my brothers, who were watching it live. I understand the shock they got,"
he continued. "But we have to be happy because it could have been much worse. Now, we have to forget about it and think of what comes next and try to be with my teammates as soon as possible on the field," he added. On the next phase of the season, Torres confirmed that "everything is decided" during the final stretch of the season, and emphasised that the team is still eager to win the Champions League. Torres was named the best player of the month in February by Rojiblancos fans.

FIFA warns US travel ban could prevent it from hosting World Cup LoNdoN, MARCH 10 (IANS): Global football governing body FIFA's president, Gianni Infantino, reckons that the controversial travel ban issued by US President Donald Trump could prevent the United States from hosting the 2026 World Cup. Trump's latest executive order bars visas for people from six countries with a Muslim majority and temporarily shuts down America's refugee programme, reports Efe. After a FIFA summit in London, Infantino pointed
out that the United States should guarantee players, coaches, referees and fans access to the country if it wants to bid to host the 2026 World Cup, which will be the first to incorporate 48 teams. "Trump is the President of the United States of America and as such of course (I have) huge respect for what he does. He's in charge, together with his government, to take decisions that are best for his country. That's why he has been elected," Infantino said. "In the world there are
many countries who have bans, travel bans, visa requirements and so on and so forth," he added. "We are now in the process of defining the bid requirements. The requirements will be clear. And then each country can make up their decision, whether they want to bid or not based on the requirements. It's general sporting criteria," the Swiss explained. Trump's new executive order could also hinder Los Angeles's bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games.
