Polling was held in the 38 hill and valley constituencies out of 60 spread over six districts of Manipur in the first of its two-phase assembly elections on Saturday, where over 84 per cent voter turnout was recorded till 3 pm. Officials said overall Manipur witnessed a peaceful polling under tight security, barring stray incidents of violence. Some cases of EVM glitches were reported which delayed polling in some polling stations. Voters, including senior citizens and new voters stood in queues to exercise their franchise from 7 am to 3 pm. As per initial estimates, the state witnessed a huge turnout of voters in the first phase of the assembly elections with over 80 per cent voters casting their ballots. The voting percentage went up further after the final calculations were officially declared by Chief Electoral Officer Vivek Kumar Dewangan during a press meet in his office, Lamphelpat. Meanwhile, workers of two political parties clashed in Thangmeiband assembly constituency in which Congress workers reportedly attacked a candidate of People’s Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA) who was reportedly injured. The ‘Iron Lady of Manipur,’ Irom Sharmila will take on Congress Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh in his home turf Thoubal in the second and final phase of the polls slated to take place on March 8. Meanwhile, both BJP and Congress parties are locked in a bitter fight. The saffron party is hoping to cash in from an anti-incumbency factor. Only the Congress and BJP are locked in straight fight in three constituencies—Sekmai, Nambol and Mayang Imphal in the first round of the elections. Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Th Lokeswar, a Congress nominee fielded from
Khundrakpam appealed to the electorate to choose the “best candidates” who are capable of ensuring good governance. A young new voter said, “We want a peaceful government free of bandh and blockades in Manipur.” At stake was the political fate of 168 candidates, including seven women in the first phase of elections in the state where Congress has ruled for three straight terms. The state elections will be a big electoral test for the three-time Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh. Interestingly, there is no Congress candidate in the Churachandpur and the Kangpokpi constituencies. The first round of polling will decide the fate of political bigwigs like for-
mer ministers Thounaojam Chaoba, Yumkham Erabot Singh, O Joy Singh, Nongthongbam Biren Singh, Dr Nimaichand Luwang and the lone former tribal woman MLA Nemcha Kipgen of BJP. She was fielded from Kangpokpi constituency. For Congress, political bigwigs in the polls include Laishom Ibomcha, Khumukcham Joykishan, RK Anand, I Hemochandra, Thaonaojam Shyamkumar, Dr Ng Bijoy and Yengkhom Surchandra. Manipur’s political heavyweight and former Congress minister Phungzathang Tonsing, who had resigned from the grand old party, contested from Churachandpur constituency on the ticket of National People’s Party (NPP) in the first phase of
Meanwhile, the Election Commission (EC) on Friday ordered an FIR against office-bearers of the BJP’s Manipur unit and certain newspapers for publishing advertisements without its approval. In a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer of Manipur, the EC has ordered that the FIRs under Section 188 of IPC against be lodged against BJP state unit officebearers and the newspapers, which carried the advertisements on Friday in contravention of its orders and violation of RP Act. The EC had instructed all stakeholders to not publish any advertisements on 3 and 4 March without prescreening and subsequent approval by state-level MCMC committee. The newspapers which carried the advertisements are: Sangai Express (Manipuri and English editions), Poknapham, People’s Chronicle, Naharolgi, Thoudang, Imphal Free Press, Echel Express and Huiyen Lanpao. DIMAPUR, MARCH 4 (MExN): With the new Chief Minister Dr Shürhozelie Liezietsu known for being a stickler to punctuality, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) expects that a new era in Governance is set to be ushered in very soon with timings for the thousands of Government employees – at least, in the Secretariat about to be drastically changed. A CMO press statement on Saturday informed that the Chief Minister was not pleased with the discovery of the lax practices of the government employees at the Secretariat and the Directorates in Kohima. The 81-year old CM is all geared up to stick to the mantras he dictated to the Heads and Administrative Heads of Department on February 23 last, the day after he was sworn in- Be punctual in office; set your office in order; and give the best of your services to the public. According to the report, the CM had reached office sharp at 9:30am in the morning and had deputed his aides to do a round inspection of all the departments and collect attendance of the officers and staff alike- only to be disappointed with the reports brought in. “Salaries are paid to Government employees and they are required to attend to their duties for a specific period of time on all working days. If traffic congestion is the reason employees cannot reach their office on time, they should leave home early
for their places of work,” the CM is learnt to have commented, according to the CMO press statement. In addition, the CM also gave a standing order that he will not entertain any appointments even for the Ministers and legislators at his private residential office except under unavoidable situations. “I have a fully functional office at the Secretariat, and so have they. They should attend their offices and if need be, meet me there at the Secretariat. And so should bureaucrats,” the new CM said. Further, the CM has insisted that his movement through the city should not inconvenience any member of the public and had fixed his departure for the Secretariat from his official residence for 9am every morning, as and when he does not have other engagements. “I am a public servant and I have no right to inconvenience the people I serve while moving through the city,” he emphatically told his OSD (Security) and insisted that his convoy wait out in the traffic jam as any other motorist caught in the morning rush. According to the press statement, this is a rare gesture in a city where people often complain of the VIPs overtaking motorists caught in traffic congestions thereby causing worse traffic jams. When the head of the State is in such a mode, perhaps, others will take a cue for him, the CMO press statement has espoused hope.
steps being taken to mitigate JCC criticizes TR’s ‘lack of remorse’ delay in salaries: finance dept
DIMAPUR, MARCH 4 (MExN): The Nagaland State Finance Department today stated that the government is seriously concerned over the delay in payment of salaries to its employees and has been taking all possible steps to mitigate the difficulties of such employees. “There are procedural problems which are to be tackled as best as possible according to the situation arising from time to time,” a press note from the department stated.
It meanwhile said that the clarification issued by the Finance Department on February 22 “contained facts, and there cannot be any question of accepting or rejecting facts.” “While the news item of February 23, 2017 referred to the alleged ‘parking of more than Rs.5000 crore in the State coffers’, the one of March 3, 2017 has shifted to the utilization of CSS funds, payment of State Share and delay in payment of salaries to the SSA, RMSA and Hindi
teachers,” the department observed. The department said it would be proper “if, instead of making wild allegations, specific instances of irregularities committed by the Finance Department or its Officials are brought to the notice of the concerned authorities so that appropriate actions may be taken.” The details of executive action taken by the Government from time to time cannot be made the subject matter of debate in the media,
it added, while stating that the Finance Department, “therefore, does not wish to be drawn into such media debate and hence shall not respond to such opinionated views in future.” The department made clear that the government in general and the Finance Department in particular “will continue to take actions as deemed necessary from time to time to redress the grievances of the employees as best as is possible under the given circumstances.”
DIMAPUR, MARCH 4 (MExN): The Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) today stated that former Chief Minister, TR Zelaing’s “utter lack of remorse as shown in refuting moral ownership on the whole unfortunate incident and portraying himself rather as victim of majoritarian politics is intolerable and shows his sheer disregard and insensitivity for the two departed youths, who lost their lives because of his flip flop decisions and treachery.” A press note from the JCC termed it “unbecoming of true statesmanship and leadership to divert and po-
liticize the whole disastrous episode to minority politics v/s majority politics and try absolving himself of any responsibility for the carnage and loss of lives.” Condemning the former CM and his supporters for playing the “minority card,” it termed this as “nothing but a foul and insincere attempt to blemish the Naga people’s movement to protect Article 371 (A) and shift the blame to the people of Nagaland.” The JCC meanwhile stood by the decision of the Diphupar Village Council decision “i.e. that under no circumstance JCC would allow the Chief Minister
post to be given back to T.R. Zeliang as it would be a sacrilege to the Naga people as a whole.” It added that unless a Joint Inquiry Commission (JIC) is setup to make an impartial investigation and bring this matter to a logical conclusion, JCC will “continue its fight.” Meanwhile, in addition to the resolutions adopted at the March 3 NTAC and JCC meeting, the JCC informed that the immediate suspension of the DC Longleng and the police personnel involved in the firing in Longleng within 7(seven) days, is also one of the demands.
Dobhinalla-Signal road deteriorating due to inadequate drainage: JAC
DIMAPUR, MARCH 4 (MExN): The DobhinallaSignal Angami-Thahekhu Road, only recently constructed during 2015 end and 2016 beginning, is in grave danger of deteriorating to its earlier condition due to inadequate drainage and its poor construction, Joint Action Committee (JAC) for Dobhinalla-Signal Angami-Thahekhu Road informed on Saturday. According to a press statement from the JAC, inadequate and improper drainage issue has become the most common complaint from the residents and this problem is worsening day by day. The JAC also furnished photos as evidenced along with the press statement. It stated that the road was constructed with new German technology and was expected to last for 15

Army Supply Depot, IFC godown area are thinly constructed and huge damages have already started, the JAC stated. Further, the regular practise of the Army parking their heavy vehicle over the drain slab pavements
near the depot has had a detrimental effect causing break-ins, which were already in a critical condition, it alleged. Owing to haphazard parking by Army vehicles in the depot area, vehicular accidents happen quite of-
ten, the JAC further claimed adding, several cases of injury to humans have also been reported after they fall into the drainage. While expressing gratitude to the to the PWD, Department of Roads & Bridges and Minister in-
charge, Y. Vikheho Swu for constructing the road, the JAC has appealed the concerned department to initiate proper drainage system and construct durable slabs which also serve as a strong and safe pavement for the pedestrians.
The JAC also drew the attention of the district administration and the department concerned about a fence constructed along the road stretch by Army, which it alleged was clearly encroaching public property and road.

one more tuition,” said Riniki Bhattacharya, whose son attends an English-medium school affiliated to the state education board. “As it is, there are three languages – and Sanskrit is supposed to be a tough language to learn. So just learning at school will definitely not be enough.”

Mukul Hazarika graduated with a degree in Sanskrit in 1976. He used to teach the ancient language in an Assamese-medium government school in Assam’s Jorhat district till it gradually faded out of the school’s curriculum due to waning interest. Hazarika now teaches English and Hindi in the same school. One would assume that he would be happy at the Assam government’s decision, announced earlier this week, to make Sanskrit compulsory till Class eight in all schools run by the government. But that is not the case. “This is an absurd move,” he said. “Students will be unnecessarily burdened. They already study three languages. This was completely unwarranted.” He insisted that his views on the subject had nothing to do with his personal politics. Hazarika isn’t the only person to contend that the government’s decision has not been well thought out. In debates on the subject on Assamese news channels, spokespersons of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party have not done well as they have tried to defend a decision in which very few see any merit. isations, traditionally powerful entities in the state’s political ecosystem, have criticised Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s government, accusing it of pandering to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the BJP’s ideological mentor. While the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad called the decision a “well-orchestrated conspiracy being micromanaged and monitored from Nagpur [where the RSS headquarters are]”, the All Assam Students Union took a more moderate view. It focused on the fact that school students would now be forced to study four languages in Assam even as children in other parts of the country learn three or even two.
Not enough teachers At present, students in Assam’s government-run schools that are affiliated to the state education board must study three languages: Hindi till Class Seven, English, and Assamese or Bengali or Bodo – depending upon the region the school is in – till Class 10. “While it is great that the government wants to rekindle an interest in Sanskrit, they could have kept the option of students having a choice between Hindi and Sanskrit,” said the principal of a government school in Guwahati, who did not want to be identified. The principal added that the average student would find it difficult to cope with studying four languages.
Critics of the government’s decision also point out that there aren’t enough teachers qualified to teach Sanskrit. Assam has 56,000 governmentrun schools, which means the state has to hire at least as many teachers for its new plan. “Consider Upper Assam – only a few colleges offer degrees in Sanskrit [here],” said Hazarika. “It will be practically impossible to fill so many vacancies.” Said Hemen Saikia, who teaches in a government school in Teok, a small town in Jorhat district: “How will the government hire so many teachers in such a short span of time?” Even parents of schoolgoing children were sceptical. “This basically means
“If our political classes have strong feelings about a curricular matter – whether it is about Sanskrit or the history of Assam – shouldn’t they first try to make the change in schools where their children and grandchildren go to?” asked Baruah. “Why only in government schools? It believes that the move would not only prevent the impact of the West on India’s culture but would also promote its version of cultural nationalism. In November 2014, months after the formation of the Narendra Modi government, the parent body of the BJP publicly underlined the importance it gave to the issue when senior RSS member Dinesh Kamath threatened to launch a nationwide agitation if the Union government did not make Sanskrit education compulsory up to Class 12 in all schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education. A year later, the Human Resources Development ministry set up a 13-member expert committee to
recommend measures to integrate the study of Sanskrit with other disciplines like physics, chemistry, mathematics, medical science and law, suggest changes in Sanskrit education in schools and universities and point out ways to impart Sanskrit education through modern tools. Though the committee, headed by former Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami, did not recommend making Sanskrit education mandatory, it suggested, in its report submitted about a year back, that the ministry establish a Central Board of Veda and Sanskrit Secondary Education that would affiliate Sanskrit pathshalas across the country, conduct exams and make available grant-in-aid. We expect the government not to delay the implementation of its new education policy any further and make Sanskrit mandatory throughout the country, said Kothari.

Mentally unstable woman from Assam rescued in Delhi bIG booK SaLE New Delhi, March 4 (PTi): Delhi Police rescued a 27-year-old mentally unstable woman from Assam who was allegedly held captive here by three men. Subham Gosai (25), Sagar Rout (25) and Ranjan Koiri (28) have been apprehended for allegedly operating an organised gang involved in trafficking of girls from Assam to Delhi and other states, said Ravindra Yadav, joint commissioner of police (crime). The Crime Branch received information from Assam Police about a 27-year-old missing girl said to be in Delhi. The woman was missing from February 24 and her parents had filed a complaint in Assam. During analysis of the mo-
bile phone location, it was found to be somewhere in northwest Delhi’s Shakurpur area. A team led by ACP Shweta Chauhan was constituted under the supervision of DCP (Crime) G Ramgopal Naik to trace and rescue the woman. The three accused were detained in connection with the case. During further investigation, it was found that the victim had been brought to Delhi from Guwahati on February 26, while she was waiting for a train on February 24 from Assam. “Since she was not mentally sound, her parents kept her in quite a protected environment and would not allow her to venture out. She wanted to work and earn money like
others of her age, so she ran away from her house,” said another police officer. On the way, she met the accused who convinced her to travel to Delhi with them. They lured her on the pretext of providing her a good job but she was forcefully kept in a rented house at Shakurpur and made to work as a maid. When she resisted, she was beaten, her SIM card was broken and her money and gold chain were snatched from her. “Due to her extreme resistance and the fear that they might be caught if something happened to her, they abandoned her at New Delhi Railway Station on February 28 around 1.30 PM,” said the officer. Efforts were made to
trace the victim in the area of the railway station and inquiry was made from auto and taxi drivers, coolies and shopkeepers in the area, police said. She was traced at the railway station on March 2 around 4.30 AM. “She spent her days sitting in the waiting room or roaming around in the area. A rag picker identified her and told us that she had been seen roaming in the area,” police said. All three accused have previous criminal backgrounds and further legal action against them is being taken by Assam Police.

State BJP President Biplab Kumar Deb said that if the Left Front government does not recommend a CBI inquiry into the killing to the central government, the party would launch a massive non-cooperation movement. Police said that Chanmohan Tripura, a local BJP tribal leader, was murdered by a man on December 26 in Gandachara area in Tripura. Police immediately arrested the accused. Deb, along with other state party leaders, led the

Smart classes for 264 govt schools in Arunachal Pradesh New Delhi, March 4 (The iNDiaN exPreSS): The Arunachal Pradesh government has decided to introduce the concept of smart classes to 264 government-run higher secondary and secondary schools. The classes will be for students of classes 9 and 10 and will use information and communications technology (ICT) to impart education. Chief Minister Pema Khandu in a cabinet meeting on Friday decided this was the best way to make learning more simple. This came to pass after a presentation with respect to the functioning of smart classes was made at the meeting, according to an official communiqué. “With the introduction of smart classes, the experience of learning will become simpler and grasping. Especially, it will help to demystify learning of mathematics and science subjects,” the CM said. NAGALAND
A Gandhian’s 50 yrs of peace-building efforts in Nagaland Ajit Kanitkar
began to roll out all over the country, not to be left behind, Nagaland Gandhi Ashram was probably the first NGO to establish a centre in Chuchuyimlang village with the help of Ministry of Communications of the Government of India. The Ashram recently tied up with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences and is offering a postgraduate program in Human Development. The government has allocated land in the village and hopefully, a fully residential campus will come up in the coming years. As he says, “That will be a farewell gift to me.”

For many Indians even today, the Northeastern states of the country and its people are in the limelight most of the time for the wrong reasons. Be it news of violence, floods, insurgency and road blocks, the collective imagery of this part of our country in the national consciousness is still that of a region that is not just geographically remote but mentally alien. The story of Natwarbhai Thakkar of Nagaland is refreshingly different. Thakkar came to Nagaland in 1955 to promote national and emotional integration through voluntary service on Gandhian principles and to conduct activities for all-round development of the people of Nagaland and Northeast India. A Gujarati by birth, he chose to move from his hometown of Dahanu Road in Maharashtra in western India to Nagaland in the far east, inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi’s thoughts imbibed during the freedom movement and further mentored by late Kaka Kalelkar, freedom fighter and social reformer. Since then, his efforts, along with his wife Lentina, an Ao Naga, and many volunteers and staff of Nagaland Gandhi Ashram are still directed at peace-building efforts at the frontier in spite of all the odds.

the distance from Amguri in Assam foothills to the mountains of Nagaland was just about 80 km but it took many hours to reach the Chuchuyimlang village due to the difficult terrain. Chuchuyimlang then had houses with thatched roofs. Over the years, these made way to houses with tinned sheets and later to concrete structures. Not even a post office existed then nor a telephone link with the outside world. Electricity was a luxury. In his first week in the village, he saved a child who needed medical attention and care. Slowly and steadily, responding to the needs of the community, a number of deRemote Location velopment initiatives were pioWhen he arrived in 1955, neered by the Gandhi Ashram

The government, taking a cue from the Ashram, started a number of initiatives serving the very purpose of pilot efforts undertaken by the Ashram. chaLLenging JouRney However, the journey was treacherous and Natwarbhai had to face many challenges. Those who did not believe in national integration did not see the Ashram activities sympathetically. In early years of his coming to Nagaland, his house was attacked at night by forces
hostile to his efforts in peace building. He and his family had a narrow escape. The government often found his work irksome as he took a principled stand against any injustice and unfair practices causing harm to the Naga community. But Natwarbhai persisted and remained steadfast like a true karmayogi. As his work expanded, he became a part of the local community. Visitors and dignitaries blessed his work and stood behind his efforts in solidarity. Awards, recognitions, and fame came his way, but it did not affect him personally. He remains the same humble person with a mischievous sparkle in his eyes. After 1990, when the computer education movement

I first met him in his Ashram in August 1987 when I was working as a volunteer with Jnana Prabodhini, a Pune-based NGO working in the field of education and national integration. I lost contact with him and then got an opportunity to meet him after almost thirty years in November 2016. When I had first met him, he talked about cultivating a healthy sense of curiosity. Those words stayed with me even now. Natwarbhai had continued on this journey of nurturing a healthy curiosity amidst changes that sometimes overpower the village life in remote regions. Natwarbhai at the young age of 85 is an active Facebook user.
During my visit, I wanted to know what has changed and not changed in Nagaland in these fifty years. His observations were poignant. "At that time, there was not a single educated person in Chuchuyimlang village. Now we can count a few IAS officers, teachers, government servants, and lawyers. There was neither a post office nor a telephone facility. Now the Nagaland Gandhi Ashram runs a computer centre with over 60 computers offering several short and long duration courses for Naga youths. I see several other positive things happening in the society. We have now three local newspapers published from the state. There is a lot of debate on issues affecting the Naga society. I see a small beginning of the emergence of civil society. In our neighbourhood, someone recently started an orphanage. " Asked on his long innings to build bridges between Naga society and rest of the country, Natwarbhai is more circumspect in his reply. “For me, it has been a long and sometimes tiring and frustrating effort. I think that the connect is still very weak. It will take a long time to build strong linkages. But I am ever optimistic. There was an incident in the Raj Bhavan in Kohima where some miscreant removed the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. Around the same time, in my village Chuchuyimlang, the village council decided to felicitate me and honoured me with an award for lifetime

The Global Shapers, Kohima Hub organized its Cafe Conversations series 'Story Nights: Reviving our age-old oral tradition' with Peace Activist Niketu Iralu on March 4 at D/Café, Jail Colony here. Apem Raman, Curator, Global Shapers, Kohima Hub gave a brief introduction of Story Nights stressing on the concept of storytelling in Naga tradition and the need to sit and listen to other people's perspectives and their stories. Beginning his story with two quotes, Iralu focused on the idea of remaking the world starting with oneself. Substantiating with the quotes, “All of History can be written in two small words-Challenge and response” - Arnold Toynbee and “Nothing is possible without people, nothing is permanent without institutions” - Jean Monnet, Iralu stressed that young people are the people who are starting to build the institutions, and that they must learn to do things in a different way and respond to changes differently. Narrating his life story, Iralu asserted that the turning point in his life began when he started experimenting with listening to the “small voice in your heart” and putting things right with honesty. His experiment with listening and truth also led him to deal with selfishness, and making an effort to be selfless and deciding to give his best. “What I was doing in my life was that I was touching the world's problems in a small way,”

What does ‘The Shack’ say about your pain? David Mathis Executive Editor, desiringGod.org
T
he Shack movie releases in theaters this weekend, as this year marks the tenth anniversary of Paul Young’s self-published novel of the same title. The book appeared in 2007, and traveled through the wider Christian market to become a global phenomenon. By early summer, 2008, more than one million sales were reported, and by the end of 2009, more than ten million. Young grew up as a missionary kid and was sexually abused (not by family) on the mission field. The Shack, he says, was birthed in his own wrestling with his trauma and his existential “problem of pain” — how God can be sovereign and good, and not just allow such evil in the world at large, but such evil toward me personally. The Shack is fiction, but don’t think for a minute that Young isn’t clearly and intentionally writing theology. He’s the first to say so. Theology isn’t merely conveyed in abstract propositions. Dozens of literary genres make up the Christian Scriptures. It’s not only the apostle Paul who speaks for God, but also the Psalms and Proverbs and the apocalyptic writings. Jesus himself spoke in stories, called parables. Story is a powerful tool for teaching someone about God and his world. The fact that Young writes a novel doesn’t mean that he’s indifferent to how his readers think about God and their pain. In fact, the key to understanding why so many love his novel is it speaks so vividly about God and pain. Shack Attack I read the book in 2008 amid the swirling controversy about Young’s portrayal of the Trinity. Honestly, I was not impressed by the writing or the theology. The story has enough intrigue and narrative tension to hook readers and keep us interested in how things resolve, but lacks much in the finer points. Beyond the Trinity, which has been addressed at length, the book makes problematic and untrue claims that seem to be
more informed by evangelical-folk assumptions than specific things the Bible actually says. The story starts with a kidnapping and a murder. While on a camping trip with his children, Mack Phillips simultaneously saves his son from drowning and, in all the commotion, loses track of his youngest daughter. He soon discovers that she has been kidnapped, and eventually the police find evidence that she was murdered in a shack somewhere out in the wilderness. Three years later, with Mack still struggling over this Great Sadness, as Young calls it, he receives a letter from God asking him to meet him at the shack where his daughter was murdered. At first Mack wonders if it’s a cruel joke. But he decides he must go. He needs some kind of closure. When he arrives, God is there, but not like anyone would expect. God the Father is an African-American woman named Papa. Jesus is, well, Jesus — a Middle Eastern carpenter. And the Holy Spirit is an Asian woman named Sarayu. But don’t get too distracted by this bizarre, and unhelpful, portrayal of the holy Trinity. Strange as it is, the story is moving somewhere deeper — to touch a more tender theologi-
cal nerve. Without spoiling the height of the story for those who plan to see the movie, Mack’s weekend at the shack with God culminates by confronting his Great Sadness. Mack’s anger with God over the death of his daughter eventually boils to the surface. He finally admits, “Yes, God is to blame!” Young’s defense of pain amounts to God’s hands being tied. Humans choose evil. God is limited by the choices they make with their free will. Wisdom (a Hispanic woman portraying divine wisdom) explains, “Papa has never needed evil to accomplish his good purposes. It is you humans who have embraced evil and Papa has responded with goodness.” As Papa has said to Mack, “There was no way to create freedom without a cost.” Not Our Job The further I read into The Shack, the clearer it became that the deepest theological reality for Young is not the Trinity, or self-autonomous free will, but the very personal problem of pain. And in the various degrees of error at these flashpoints, what the story can’t help but evidence is a subtle, but significant misunderstanding of divine revelation — how it is that God speaks to
us today. For Young and his readers, the story wrestles most profoundly with pain. What’s remarkable — and from the little I’ve researched, it does not appear that Young is aware of this parallel — is that long before Mack Phillips, and Young himself, wrestled in story form with the problem of pain, God himself told us a more reliable story of another man suffering inside a theological shack. His name is Job. All at once, word came that Job’s donkeys, sheep, camels, and even his servants were wiped out in a series of tragedies. And then, most devastating of all, came the report about his children: “Behold, a great wind came across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you” (Job 1:19). What did Job do — and what did he say about God? Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” (Job 1:20–21)
Lest we assume that this sufferer, in his great sadness, spoke in error, the inspired commentator immediately confirms, “In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong” (Job 1:22). But the story of Job is far from over. With God’s permission, Satan attacks Job’s own body with “loathsome sores” from head to toe (Job 2:7). Again, unlike Mack Phillips who shakes his fist at God in anger, Job bows his head in faith. “Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?” And again the inspired writer verifies, “In all this Job did not sin with his lips” (Job 2:10). Then for thirty chapters, Job’s three friends argue, in their folk theology, that Job’s suffering is God’s retribution for his sin. Yet Job defends his righteousness, and at the same time holds true to his God. Finally, God himself speaks to Job in chapters 38–41, and it sounds nothing at all like Papa’s and Wisdom’s free-will encouragement and consolation. Rather than trying to answer the problem of pain by sloughing it off on the shallow explanation of human decisions, the story of Job lifts our heads to the incomprehensible glory, grandeur, and majesty of a mysterious and sovereign God. Job’s climactic expression is not that little human choices derail God’s will, but this: “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted” (Job 42:2). And, again, lest we think the inspired writer of this book is presenting Job at this point as a bad theologian, he adds his own authoritative description of all Job’s pain, “All his brothers and sisters . . . comforted him for all the evil that the Lord had brought upon him” (Job 42:11). If we are in Christ, God makes our pain a channel of his grace to bring about a deeper trusting and delighting in him. Without answering all our questions about pain in detail, we learn that God is greater, and his purposes more mysterious and wiser, than we can fathom; and that pain, in his good providence and plan, is his strange grace to draw us to him — not simply a question
requiring an answer on our terms. For Bible-lovers, our great sadness, as John Piper says, should be one of a very different sort than Young’s: “It is a great sadness when sufferers seek relief by sparing God his sovereignty over their pain. The sadness is that this undercuts the very hope it aims to create” (Job, 8). Want to Hear God Speak? The problem of pain is the most profound focus of Young’s story, but what lies beneath the surface in essentially all the problematic parts are widespread false assumptions about how we hear God speak today. Where do we go to hear God’s voice? Again and again, Young points away from Scripture, and in doing so, he well represents what is assumed today by many professing Christians. We do not need a wilderness shack to hear from God. He gave us his word, through his appointed prophets and apostles in the Great Book, and he gave us the Spirit to illumine and apply our hearing. In short, the voices in your head are not God; they are you. If you want to hear God audibly, then read the Bible out loud. I don’t plan to see the movie. For me, I’m not eager to lend my support to a subpar story with problematic claims about such precious realities. It is faintly Christian at best, and teeters on the brink of something else altogether. It may well represent what Young and many professing Christians believe today, but it does not well represent the theology and teachings of the Bible. If you do read the book or see the movie, perhaps you can help others wrestle with these important issues, and point them to God’s revealed word in the Scriptures for greater clarity and hope in their pain. Hacksaw Ridge: The Bloody, True Story of Faith in Action Our Great Salvation in Christ Mel Gibson’s new film raises questions about religious liberty and moral conviction amidst national turmoil Brett McCracken | Christianity Today
A
fter scandals and controversy led to his very public downward spiral and subsequent exile from Hollywood a decade ago, Mel Gibson has kept a pretty low profile. The Oscarwinning actor and director of Braveheart and one-time evangelical darling (for directing the blockbuster Passion of the Christ) has been gradually redeeming himself of late, beginning with an acclaimed starring turn in Blood Father this summer. Hacksaw Ridge, Gibson’s first directorial outing since 2006’s Apocalypto, should expedite his return to respectability. The World War II epic, which received a 10-minute standing ovation when it premiered in September at the Venice Film Festival, is artistically masterful and thematically timely. It is sweeping and surprising cinema of the sort that feels more and more rare in Hollywood’s current funk of recycled franchise junk. A title with the word “hacksaw” in it is perhaps appropriate for a film that is jarringly two-halved, in many senses. The first is literal: The film is structured in two parts. The first half is set in rural America, in homes and army bases and courtrooms; relative civilization. The second is set on Okinawa in World War II, far from civilization and love and peace; relative chaos. When the shift happens from the first to the second half it is bloody and bracing. Depicting the pivotal battle of Hacksaw Ridge in April–May 1945, the film’s brutal second half contains some of the most visceral and well-choreographed cinematic battle scenes since the bar-raising opening of Saving Private Ryan. Between the in-your-face violence and a structure that draws attention to itself, Hacksaw Ridge reminded me of a Quentin Tarantino film, particularly (in a weird way) the decidedly two-halved Death Proof. Though Hacksaw’s first half has a pastoral, almost Capra-esque tone, vibrant and sunny and green, the second half is sharp-edged and industrial, muddy and hellish and gray. Some may observe a dissonance in this, a film about pacifism that ends up being as bloody a war epic as any in recent memory. Is Gibson glorifying violence here even as he tells the story of a nonviolent hero? It’s a similar question some levelled at Gibson’s Passion, which juxtaposes
images of flesh-ripping bloodletting with Christ (Jim Caviezel) uttering lines like “love your enemies” and “those who live by the sword shall die by the sword.” Can a film’s point about non-violence, sacrifice, and love be made effectively by confronting the audience so bluntly and unapologetically with the gory horror of violence? This is a question that informs Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ, and now Hacksaw Ridge, and it’s another aspect of the film’s two-halved nature: its thematic duality. The true story of Desmond Doss, the first conscientious objector to win the Medal of Honor, Hacksaw Ridge is about conflicts of many kinds: duty to God versus duty to country, individual freedom versus communal responsibility, healing versus killing, love versus hate, and so on. The film is also about an internal war, of course, as Doss (brilliantly played by Andrew Garfield) wrestles with maintaining his faith convictions amidst extraordinary pressures to compromise. A devout Seventh-day Adventist, Doss joins the army during World War II in spite of his pacifist convictions and refusal to bear arms. He volunteers to be a medic, where he aspires to save lives rather than take them. His convictions make him unpopular in his unit. Fellow soldiers taunt him, beat him, and pressure him to quit, yet Doss is determined to serve his country as a medic, thrust into bloody battles without a weapon to defend himself. Coming as it does just a few days before the most divisive US presidential election in recent memory, Hacksaw Ridge ponders a timely question: How can we live alongside one another amidst differences, bearing with and respecting one another’s convictions, even when we vehemently disagree? This question has been at the heart of many of America’s recent struggles, not least the explosive debates about how to balance First Amend-
no easy task, however, as “things become less and less clear-cut all the time.” Hacksaw Ridge isn’t a film trying to solve America’s religious liberty dilemma, and overstressing a parallel between Desmond Doss and Hobby Lobby would be foolish. But at a time in American culture when everything is politicized (the NFL, bathrooms, Skittles, hurricanes, etc.), it’s hard not to read an election season release like Hacksaw Ridge through that lens. But the message of Hacksaw Ridge is not so much political as it is human. It ponders a world where skinny pacifists and G.I. Joes can not only tolerate one another but be good friends. This is explored in the film’s dynamic between Doss and Smitty (Luke Bracey), a veritable killing machine who at first loathes Doss for his convictions but then comes to respect him. Is it possible in our highly partisan, fractured republic for people of vastly different backgrounds and convictions to coexist peacefully together? If it is, the film suggests, it will only happen in the context of relationships where we can listen to and begin to understand each other. Ultimately Smitty and the other men in Doss’ unit come to respect him because they see that his convictions are genuine. His faith isn’t a cover for any ulterior motive and his convictions are in no way about selfpreservation. Rather, they are for the flourishing of others. From start to finish in Hacksaw Ridge, the faith of Desmond Doss is central. It is tested, but it is never in doubt. There are very few major Hollywood films that have characters like this. And contrary to some perceptions (or wishful thinking) about one’s faith, Doss shows that while it is deeply personal to him, it is not private. It is something that has bearing on how he lives, how he works, and how he serves and loves people around him. Of course this is where conflicts can arise, but it is also where faith shows its relevance. What’s the point of faith if it’s just an individualistic, consumeristic, private indulgence? Faith without works, said James (2:17), is dead. But faith in Hacksaw Ridge, though surrounded by much death and killing, is very much alive.
ment freedoms and nondiscrimination protections. What happens when a wedding-cake baker’s conviction about same-sex marriage conflicts with a gay couple’s desire to not be treated differently than a heterosexual couple? What happens when a Christian college’s convictions about sexuality conflict with the government’s interests in equal rights and access for sexual minorities? How can we live alongside one another amidst differences, bearing with and respecting one another’s convictions, even when we vehemently disagree? One cannot help but think of these religious freedom skirmishes in watching Hacksaw Ridge, which explores similar questions: What happens when a man’s religious convictions conflict with his call of duty in war? What happens when an individual’s conscience has consequences for others, as in the soldiers fighting alongside a gunless Doss in battle? This is where the rubber meets the road in religious liberty debates. Pluralism is all well and good when a “to each their own” ethos allows people to do their thing in the privacy of their own homes and communities. It’s when one’s personal expression has implications on others that it becomes a problem. I interviewed Gibson about Hacksaw Ridge and asked him what he thought his film had to say about the present debates about religious liberty. He said the film “creates a puzzle” and begs questions in people’s minds about where they would stand if faced with a similar scenario. “People have to be discerning about who they are and who other people are,” Gibson said. “How do you make that work without big clashes and upheavals?” Brett McCracken is a Los AnGibson added that conflicts of geles–based writer and journalist, this sort are a “fact of life” and that and author of the books Hipster the important thing is that we “deal Christianity: When Church and with what’s around us in the best way Cool Collide (Baker) and Gray Matwe know how, holding staunchly to ters: Navigating the Space Between what we believe.” He admitted this is Legalism and Liberty (Baker).
Scripture: Hebrews 1:1-3
salvation is great because of who the Son is.

4. The Son of God: In these early verses the Son is especially revealed as God. His divine names are proof of His deity. He is the Son of God. God has many sons, but only one Son. Christ is Son in a sense altogether unique. He is also called "God" and "Lord".
"1
God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and many ways, 2 in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. 3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high." 1. Introduction: The opening segment of the Epistle of Hebrews is composed of three paragraphs: 1:1-3; 1:414; 2:1-4. The first paragraph is short but grand, introducing the theme and key doctrines of the letter. The second, long paragraph is a topical, comparative study of Christ and angels. The third, short paragraph is the natural outcome of the first two, with an appeal for response. 2. Purpose of the Epistle: The first three verses of the epistle introduce its main subjects: divine revelation, God's Son Jesus, and the work of redemption. The author's purpose was to deter his readers from turning away from Christ and going back to Judaism. Following Christ is better than Judaism because Christ is the full revelation of God. In Judaism God had given a partial revelation of Himself, speaking through prophets and angels; but in His Son, Jesus Christ, He gives a complete revelation of Himself.
3. God's communication with man: Ever since the world began, God has been speaking to man at different times and in different ways: sometimes by direct communication, sometimes through dreams and visions, sometimes through experiences. The series of revelations recorded in the Old Testament began with Adam and ended with Malachi. Then from Malachi to the time of Christ, a period of about 400 years, there were no recorded divine communications. But now, in these last daysin this period of God's last way of communication with us- He has spoken to us by His Son. The main thrust of God's message is our great salvation through Christ. The
5. The deity of Christ: The divine works of Christ are proof of His deity. A. His work of creation-- He made the worlds, the earth, the heavens, the universe. B. His work of upholding all things-- He not only created all things, but He holds together all that He has created. When He was on earth, at His powerful command the angry waves and wind became still. At His mighty command disease and death loosed their hold on man, and demons fled away. And now, as ever, by His word of power all things are sustained. C. His work of salvation. He is the Saviour of sinners. He purged our sins. Only God can purge sin. His divine character is proof of His deity. Jesus Christ is God because He is exactly like His Father. In Jesus we have the expression of the essential nature of God. D. His position, or rank, is proof of His deity. He is Heir of all things. God's estate is vast, and Christ has been appointed Heir of all- Heir in the sense of possession. The meaning is that all things belong to the Son of God. He is seated at the right hand of the Majesty on high. The One who grappled with the sin question and settled it forever ascended to heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. This exalted position is due Him. He has a right to it, for He accomplished the will of His Father. He finished the work God gave Him to do. 6. Conclusion: The core of verses 1-3 may be seen in the following comparison: A. God has spoken long ago to the fathers, in the prophets, in many portions and ways. B. God has spoken in these last days to us, in His Son, He sat down. That He sat down at the right hand of God shows a finality about the revelation and the salvation. God has spoken in His Son, who finished His work of our salvation.

GST on track, to be implemented from July 1: Jaitley
New Delhi, March 4 (iaNS): Giving a clear roadmap for its implementation, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday said that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) was on track and July 1 was going to be the likely rollout date of the new indirect tax regime. "It (GST) looks on track. Subject to Parliament approval, it looks like the possible date of implementation of GST is July 1," Jaitley said after the 11th GST Council meet concluded here. The Council approved the central cGST (cGST) and integrated GST (iGST) draft laws on Saturday. "Consensus on cGST, iGST law. Both the final draft laws were discussed today. Council has approved both the drafts," Jaitley said. With the compensation draft law having already been approved in the Council's previous meeting -- held on February 18 in Udaipur -- there are two more draft laws remaining

for approval. The Union Territory GST (UTGST) and state GST (sGST) draft laws will be taken up for discussion and approval at the Council's next meeting on March 16, Jaitley told reporters at a press briefing. The sGST and UTGST are replica of cGST and the
settlement of their drafts is only a formality, he said. "Once these are approved, the four laws - compensation, UTGST, cGST and iGST - will be approved by Cabinet and placed in Parliament in the coming session," Jaitley added. Meanwhile, the sGST draft law will have to
Aadhaar for midday meals, ICDS shocking, says Mamata
kolkaTa, March 4 (iaNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday termed as shocking the central government's decision to link Aaadhaar card with the midday meals programme in schools. "Now even infants (0-5 years) will need Aadhar cards? Aadhaar card for mid-day meals and ICDS (Integrated Child Development Scheme)? Shocking! 100 Days' Work also not spared," she tweeted. The Human Resources Development Ministry earlier this week came up with a notification making it mandatory for students to have an Aadhaar number for getting their midday meals. The cook-cum-helpers engaged in preparing the meals for the scheme would
also now be required to have Aadhaar cards. Excepting Jammu and Kashmir, Meghalya and Assam, all other states and union territories would have to adhere to the new rule. However, those not yet enrolled in the Aadhaar scheme have been given time till June 30. Protesting against the decision, Banerjee said in another tweet: "Instead of helping the poorest of the poor, the downtrodden and our favourite children, why are their rights being snatched away?" She also alleged that individuals were losing their privacy because of Aadhaar. "In the name of Aadhaar, privacy is being lost and there is extortion. Why is this Govt so negative? As a nation, we must condemn this," she added.
Fadnavis reaches out to Shiv Sena, says no BJP candidate for BMC mayor post
MuMbai, March 4 (ageNcieS): Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Saturday that his Bharatiya Janata Party will not contest the Shiv Sena for the mayor post in Brihanmumbai Municipal Council (BMC), signalling a thaw in ties between the bickering allies. Fadnavis also said his party will not be in the opposition bloc, but will keep a close eye on the transparency in the civic body’s functioning. The BJP dented the Sena’s Mumbai bastion in the recently held civic elections, improving its tally from 31 to 81 seats. The Sena, however, emerged as the single largest party with 84 of the 227 seats in the BMC. With neither getting full control of the civic
body, the stage was set for another bout between the squabbling allies-turned-rivals. But after Fadnavis’s peace message, it appears the Sena candidate will sail through. “We will not put up a candidate for mayor or deputy mayor for BMC,” news agency ANI quoted Fadnavis as saying. “We will not be in the opposition...we will support the ruling party, but will not compromise on transparency,” he said. In Mumbai, the Congress bagged 31 seats, while the NCP got nine seats followed by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (7). Significantly, since all four major parties were fighting independently, the vote share of the Independents, who got 11 seats, have reduced drastically.
Govt going in 'wrong direction' to check farmers' suicide: SC
New Delhi, March 4 (PTi): The Supreme Court today expressed grave concern over farmers' suicide due to indebtedness and crop failure and said it felt the government was going in a "wrong direction" in tackling the real problem. Asking the Centre to apprise it of the policy roadmap to address the burning issue, a bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar said the issue of farmers' suicide was of "extreme importance" and paying compensation to the families of such victims "post-facto" was not the real solution. "This issue is of extreme importance. Tentatively, we feel that you are going in a wrong direction. Farmers take loan from banks and when they are unable to repay, they commit suicide. The remedy to the problem is not to pay money to farmers after the suicide, but you should have schemes to prevent this. "Farmers' suicides have been happening for so many decades and it is surprising that no action has been taken to address the causes behind suicides." The bench, also comprising Justices D Y Chandrachud and S K Kaul, said "if the matter is moved on a right track, a lot can be achieved" and fixed the
plea for further hearing on March 27. Additional Solicitor General P S Narasimha, appearing for the Centre, told the bench that the government has initiated many schemes for farmers and the 2015 crop insurance scheme would drastically reduce such fateful incidents. The ASG said other schemes also needed to be strengthened to make farmers feel that the government would stand behind them in distress. The court was hearing the plea, filed by NGO 'Citizens Resource and Action and Initiative' on the plight of farmers in Gujarat and suicide committed by many there. The bench had expanded the scope of the petition to the entire country. Advocate Colin Gonsalves, appearing for the NGO, said that government policies have been existing since long but the main issue was to implement the schemes on the ground. He also referred to the studies conducted by renowned agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan and eminent journalist P Sainath on farmer suicides and suggested that they may also be asked to put forth their recommendations and views.

reporters, "The slabs are already decided and there is no change in slabs. But to provide the maximum ceiling, the Council felt the need to leave some scope for higher GST for after five years, when compensation to states is not required and cess is likely to be merged with GST rate."
Around 57% turnout in UP polls' penultimate phase
luckNow, March 4 (iaNS): Hundreds of thousands of voters came out to cast their ballots in the penultimate phase of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections on Saturday, with around 57 per cent turnout recorded. However, officials said that the percentage could go up as those waiting in line at the formal end of polling at 5 p.m. would be allowed to cast their vote. The electorate in the phase, covering 49 constituencies in seven eastern districts of the state, comprised 1.72 crore people, while there were 635 candidates including 175 Independents in the fray. The turnout, marginally lower than that seen in the first five phases, was however higher than the 55.04 percent recorded in the last polls in 2012. According to officials, 58.67 per cent polling was logged in Kushinagar, 58 per cent in Azamgarh and Gorakhpur while in Ballia, 57.27 per cent voters exercised their franchise. With Saturday's polling, elections to 363 constituencies of the sprawling state's total 403 has come to an end. Prominent candidates in the fray in Saturday's round included Swami

Voting in Azamgarh, the Lok Sabha constituency of Samajwadi Party patron Mulayam Singh Yadav, picked up considerably after recording the lowest turnout in the first few hours. Mulayam Singh did not campaign in his constituency following a
fallout with his son Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, who replaced him as the party President. Mau, where mafia donturned-politician Mukhtar Ansari was fielded by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), reported steady polling through the day. A
minor scuffle was reported from the Sadar area in Mau where police had to resort to a baton-charge. This phase of polls has around 20 percent of candidates with criminal record, with 109, or around 17 percent having serious criminal charges like murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, and crimes against women according to Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). Party wise, 18 out of 45 candidates from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), 24 out of 49 candidates from Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), 5 out of 36 candidates from Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), 15 out of 40 candidates from Samajwadi Party (SP), three of 10 candidates from Congress, and 22 out of 175 Independent candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits as per ADR data. Meanwhile, Varanasi, which is Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Lok Sabha constituency and is set to vote in the last phase of polls on March 8, saw road shows being conducted by Modi, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and ally Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi, and also a rally by BSP supremo Mayawati.
Despite law, 70% working women don't report workplace sexual harassment By Manisha Chachra
R

idhima Chopra, 25, once with a NGO in New Delhi is among the growing number of Indian women encouraged to complain -- without an end-result -- about harassment at work by the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, promulgated in the wake of the 2012 Delhi gangrape. Yet, 70 per cent women said they did not report sexual harassment by superiors because they feared the repercussions, according to a survey conducted by the Indian Bar Association in 2017 of 6,047 respondents. An IndiaSpend analysis of available data and conversations with working women showed there was an increase in reported cases of harassment-to 2015, the year for which latest data are available. Between 2014 and 2015, cases of sexual harassment within office premises more than doubled -- from 57 to 119 -- according to National Crime Records Bureau data. There has also been a 51 per cent rise in sexual harassment cases at other places related to work-from 469 in 2014 to 714 in 2015. In the year before, between 2013 and 2014, the National Commission for Women reported a 35 per cent increase in complaints from 249 to 336, according to a December 2014 reply filed in the Lok Sabha. Despite the rise in numbers, women, like Chopra, are finding that their complaints are not redressed effectively by employers. Employers are either unaware of the law's provisions or have implemented them partially and even those that do set up internal panels have poorly trained
members. Above all, there is little gender parity in organisations even today. The high profile case of the woman employee at The Energy & Resources Institute who had to fight a case of harassment against its then director general, R.K. Pachauri, for two years despite clear evidence illustrates this inequity. As will become clear in later sections, these problems apply not just to private and public sector establishments but also to relatively younger information technology (IT) companies.
Why Riddhima failed to get justice: Redressal system is still flawed An internal complaints committee (ICC) is mandatory in every private or public organisation that has 10 or more employees, according to the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013. However, 36 per cent of Indian companies and 25 per cent of MNCs had not yet constituted their ICCs, the 2015 research study, Fostering Safe Workplaces, by the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) showed. About 50 per cent of the more than 120 companies that participated in the study admitted that their ICC members were not legally trained. Private problem: 40 per cent of IT and 50 per cent of ad and media companies oblivious to law All ministries and departments in the government of India have constituted ICCs, the ministry of women and child development told the Lok Sabha in December 2016. The ministry of corporate affairs -- along with industry bodies AS-
SOCHAM, FICCI, Confederation of Indian Industry, Chamber of Commerce & Industry, and National Association of Software and Services Companies -- was requested to ensure its effective execution in the private sector. The law imposes a penalty of upto Rs 50,000 on employers who do not implement the Act in the workplace or even fail to constitute an ICC. But, the number of employers who do not fully comply with the law indicates that there is little monitoring of their redressal machinery. There is a high rate of non-compliance in the private sector, as is evident in the 2015 study, Reining in Sexual harassment at Workplace, by Ernst and Young. Two in five IT companies were oblivious to the need to set up ICCs and 50 per cent of advertising and media companies had not conducted training for ICC members, the study found. Three years ago, Meera Kaushik (not her real name) had started working in a Pune-based media and advertising company as a copywriter. She had an uneasy time during her job interview when her future employer insisted that she smile. "One day, when I was at work and feeling restless, my boss demanded to know why I was upset. He forced me to smile and leave my hair open. I didn't realize that this was harassment. Such expressions of concern are often considered a part of the work culture. I didn't object because I feared losing my job," she said. Kaushik finally did leave her job.
and an external member appointed to monitor such trials by Mumbai city, was of the view that employers are wrong to discourage reporting in order to protect their image. "Low or no reporting speaks volumes about the gender sensitivity of a particular organisation," she said. "Further, women may not know where to go to report harassment or it could be that the cases may not have been dealt with sincerely. Often, women go to committees believing them to be independent and find that they are actually puppets in the hands of their superiors." "Under the law, there are guidelines to display information at a conspicuous place in the workplace, list the penal consequences of sexual harassments. There is also an order directing the ICC to create awareness regarding sexual harassment in all government departments and ministries. But these don't exist," said Shikha Chhibber, a Delhi-based lawyer. Kunjila Mascillamani, a freelance writer, had filed a complaint against sexual harassment while she was a student at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata. During the hearings on her case, Mascillamani said she was blamed for the incident. "All the faculty members and the administration had turned against me and I was slut-shamed on social media. It was at this juncture that I approached an NGO to appoint an external member to oversee the procedure and ensure a fair trial," she said. As Sarpotdar pointed out, for many orWhy women fail to report ganisations, training sessions on workplace workplace harassment harassment is only a box to be ticked. "They Anagha Sarpotdar, a researcher who lack the perspective on gender equality to works on sexual harassment at workplace put the law into action," she said.

Trump administration considering separating women and children at Mexico border
WASHINGTON, MArcH 4 (reuTerS): Women and children crossing together illegally into the United States could be separated by U.S. authorities under a proposal being considered by the Department of Homeland Security, according to three government officials. Part of the reason for the proposal is to deter mothers from migrating to the United States with their children, said the officials, who have been briefed on the proposal. The policy shift would allow the government to keep parents in custody while they contest deportation or wait for asylum hearings. Children would be put into protective custody with the Department of Health and Human Services, in the “least restrictive setting” until they can be taken into the care of a U.S. relative or state-sponsored guardian. Currently, families contesting deportation or applying for asylum are generally released from detention quickly and allowed to remain in the United States until their cases are resolved. A federal appeals court ruling bars prolonged child detention. President Donald Trump has called for ending “catch and release,” in
About 54,000 children and their guardians were apprehended between Oct. 1, 2016, and Jan. 31, 2017, more than double the number caught over the same time period a year earlier. Republicans in Congress have argued women are willing to risk the dangerous journey with their children because they are assured they will be quickly released from detention and given court dates set years into the future. Immigrant rights advocates have argued that Central America’s violent and impoverished conditions force mothers to immigrate to the United States and that they should be given asylum status. which migrants who cross illegally are freed to live in the United States while awaiting legal proceedings. Two of the officials were briefed on the proposal at a Feb. 2 town hall for asylum officers by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services asylum chief John Lafferty. A third DHS official said the department is actively considering separating women from their children but has not made a decision.
HHS and the White House did not respond to requests for comment. In a statement to Reuters, DHS said: “The journey north is a dangerous one with too many situations where children - brought by parents, relatives or smugglers - are often exploited, abused or may even lose their lives. “With safety in mind, the Department of Homeland Security continually explores options that may
discourage those from even beginning the journey,” the statement said. U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar, a Texas Democrat whose district includes about 200 miles (320 km) of the border with Mexico, slammed the proposal. “Bottom line: separating mothers and children is wrong,” he said in a statement. “That type of thing is where we depart from border security and get into violating human rights,” he said.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS Implementing the new policy proposal “could create lifelong psychological trauma,” said Marielena Hincapie, executive director at the National Immigration Law Center. “Especially for children that have just completed a perilous journey from Central America.” Hincapie said the U.S. government is likely to face legal challenges based on immigration and family law if they decide to implement the policy. The policy would allow DHS to detain parents
while complying with a 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals order from July 2016 that immigrant children should be released from detention as quickly as possible. That order said their parents were not required to be freed. To comply with that order, the Obama administration implemented a policy of holding women and children at family detention centres for no more than 21 days before releasing them. Holding mothers in prolonged detention could also strain government resources, said Randy Capps of the Migration Policy Institute, a Washingtonbased non-profit. “You are talking about a pretty rapid increase in the detention population if you are going to do this,” Capps said. “The question is really how much detention can they afford.” Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly last week ordered immigration agents to deport or criminally prosecute parents who facilitate the illegal smuggling of their children. Many parents who arrive on the U.S.-Mexico border with their children have paid smugglers to guide them across the dangerous terrain.

Pyongyang warns US against its re-listing as ‘sponsor of terrorism’ SeOuL, MArcH 4 (IANS): North Korea has warned the US that it will face serious repercussions after reported calls to re-list Pyongyang as a “sponsor of terrorism”, a media report said on Saturday. “The US will keenly realise how dearly it has to pay for its groundless accusations against North Korea,” a Foreign Ministry spokesman told the state-owned Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) late Friday night. The alleged assassination of Kim Jong-nam, the halfbrother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, in Kuala Lumpur last month has raised calls by US lawmakers to relist Pyongyang as a state sponsor of terrorism, a classification that was lifted years ago under former President George W. Bush. Kim Jong-nam was allegedly murdered by two women who have since been arrested and charged by Malaysian authorities, with South Korea accusing the North of recruiting and training them to attack the leader’s halfbrother using a powerful VX nerve agent, a weapon of mass destruction, Efe news reported. Pyongyang has repeatedly denied the accusations, blaming Malaysia for the death of Kim Jong-nam, and accusing Kuala Lumpur and Washington of conspiring with Seoul to shift responsibility to the North. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson said: “Pyongyang has consistently proved” that it opposes “all forms of terrorism and any support for it before the international community”. The statement also went on to accuse the US of baselessly seeking to label the North a “sponsor of terrorism”, saying this demonstrates Washington’s “expression of inveterate repugnancy and hostile attitude towards (North Korea)”. “No matter how the US again calls the DPRK (the official name for North Korea) as a ‘sponsor of terrorism’ in line with its standard and interests, the latter will never be a ‘sponsor of terrorism’”, the statement continued. North Korea was originally listed as a state sponsor of terrorism after the 1987 attack by Pyongyang agents who allegedly detonated a bomb on a South Korean commercial airliner, killing all 115 people on board. The Bush administration in 2008 withdrew Pyongyang from the list in an effort to improve diplomatic relations and after perceived progress thanks to the Six-Party talks to try to achieve nuclear disarmament in North Korea. South Korea in February reportedly pushed the US to restore the North to the list of state sponsors of terrorism, which currently includes Iran, Sudan and Syria.
MH370 families launch campaign UN: If confirmed, chemical attacks in Mosul a war crime to fund search for the missing jet

KuALA LuMPur , MArcH 4 (reuTerS): Families of passengers on board missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 on Saturday launched a campaign to privately fund a search for the aircraft. Flight MH370, carrying 239 people, went missing on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, nearly three years ago, on March 8, 2014. Australia, Malaysia, and China jointly called
off a two-year underwater search for the aircraft in January. Grace Nathan, a Malaysian lawyer whose mother, Anne Daisy, was on the plane, said the families hope to raise $15 million to fund an initial search north of the previous search area. “We won’t start fundraising until we’re sure that the governments are not going to resume the search and until the current data
has been fully reviewed and analysed,” she said at the campaign launch and MH370 memorial event held at a mall in Kuala Lumpur. The three governments have said they will resume the search if any credible evidence on the whereabouts of the plane emerges. International experts last year assisted Voice 370, a support group for MH370 next-of-kin, in mounting their own search along the East African coast where debris had been discovered. “They pinpointed to us accurately where the debris would have made landfall. They’ve been very helpful both on a personal level and to the investigation,” Grace said. The memorial event, the first held since the search was suspended, featured musical and dance performances, while family members and friends of those aboard made impassioned pleas for the search to continue. Jiang Hui, whose mother was on the
plane, recounted his experience discovering a piece of potential MH370 debris in Madagascar last year. “I thought it was very miraculous and fortunate when I found the piece of debris that day, but I thought it was useless because this sort of searching activity should have been done by the government,” said Jiang, who travelled from China to attend the memorial. “It should not be us, the family members, who should have been subjected to this pain, to go and face this cruel reality.” Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai, who attended the event, said authorities had analysed 27 pieces of potential MH370 debris along the East African coastline, including two new pieces found in South Africa two weeks ago. The government has also signed several agreements with countries along the East African coastline to coordinate searches for debris, Liow said.
IrBIL, MArcH 4 (AP): The United Nations warned that the alleged use of chemical weapons in Mosul, if confirmed, would be a war crime and a serious violation of international humanitarian law, according to a statement released Saturday. “This is horrible,” Lise Grande, the humanitarian coordinator in Iraq said in the statement, “there is never justification none whatsoever for the use of chemical weapons.” The alleged attack occurred this week in eastern Mosul, an area declared fully liberated by Iraqi forces in January. The attack hit a neighborhood along the Tigris River which roughly divides the city in two. Doctors in an urgent care hospital in the nearby city of Irbil say they began receiving patients showing symptoms of chemical weapons exposure on Thursday. “The mortar hit our house, right inside the living room where we were sitting,” said Nazim Hamid, whose children had burns to their faces, arms and legs. The family was being treated in the Irbil hospital. “There was a very bad smell, it was some kind of gas,” he said. “My kids were affected, some of them were burned and some of them had difficulty breathing.” Hussein Qader, the deputy director of the hospital, said all 10 patients admitted for exposure are in stable condition and will be discharged in

the coming days. Most of western Mosul is still under Islamic State group control despite a handful of recent gains on the city’s southwestern edge by Iraqi forces over the past two weeks. IS has used chemical weapons in Iraq and Syria at least 52 times according to a report published late last year by IHS conflict monitor, a London-based research and intelligence gathering group. The report said that at least 19 of the 52 attacks took place in and around Mosul. Iraqi and US-led coalition officials have repeatedly expressed con-
China’s anti-corruption overhaul paves way for Xi to retain key ally BeIJING, MArcH 4 (reuTerS): China’s sweeping overhaul of its anti-corruption architecture could enable President Xi Jinping to justify retaining his key ally and top graft buster Wang Qishan beyond retirement age, sources with ties to the leadership say. Breaking the unwritten retirement rule could also set a precedent for Xi, 63, to defy current expectations that he will step down as party and military chief in 2022 and as state president the following year, the sources said. A new National Supervisory Commission will combine the powers of several graft-fighting bodies, including Wang’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), the principal vehicle for Xi’s signature anti-corruption drive. That drive has punished more than a million party members, jailing top military figures and retired security tsar Zhou Yongkang, the most senior official toppled for corruption since 1949. Wang is likely to head the new commission, the three sources said, a role
that would under normal circumstances make a strong case for him to remain at Xi’s side on the party’s Politburo Standing Committee (PSC) - the top table of power in China. For almost two decades, however, an informal age ceiling has meant only politicians aged 67 or younger have been eligible to remain on or be promoted to the PSC at the fiveyearly party congress. Wang turns 69 this year ahead of the 19th party congress this autumn. “Wang Qishan is very likely to head the National Supervisory Commission,” one of the sources told Reuters, requesting anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to media. Whether he will stay on the PSC, and for a full term, will to some extent depend “on Wang’s intent and health”, the source said. “If Wang Qishan doesn’t retire, it makes it reasonable and lends legitimacy for Xi Jinping not stepping down in 2022,” said a separate source with leadership ties. George G. Chen, an expert on Chinese legal poli-
cy at the Berlin-based Mercator Institute for China Studies, said the formation of the new commission was a “clever, two-fold instrument”, given criticism that the current anti-corruption campaign could be used as a political instrument. “Xi Jinping could on one hand solve the problem of the legitimacy of the anti-corruption campaign, (while) also allowing Wang Qishan to (remain) in the Standing Committee,” Chen told Reuters. The CCDI and the State Council Information Office, which doubles as the spokesman’s office for the government and Communist Party, did not respond to requests for comment. The CCDI announced in January a plan to merge itself with the cabinet’s Ministry of Supervision and the anti-corruption bureau of the top prosecutor’s office and corruption prevention bodies to create a super ministry. Pilot programmes have been set up in Beijing and the provinces of Zhejiang and Shanxi. Currently, the CCDI can only investigate party members suspected of

corruption. The Ministry of Supervision can interrogate civil servants, while the anti-corruption bureau of the prosecutor’s office is not empowered to detain suspects it is investigating. The commission will eliminate duplication, with the power to supervise, question and detain all civil servants, party cadres, military personnel, judges and prosecutors, executives of state-owned enterprises, university staff and doctors
and nurses of state hospitals who are suspected of corruption. It will most likely be placed under the jurisdiction of the National People’s Congress (NPC), the country’s rubberstamp parliament, but the sources said in reality the party leadership would have the final say. Wang’s current deputy, Li Shulei, 53, is the front-runner to eventually succeed Wang as head of the supervisory commission, and to secure
a seat on the 25-member Politburo - one rung below the PSC - at the 19th congress, said the sources. After a two-year stint as Fujian provincial propaganda chief, Li was the top graft buster in Beijing for a year before being named as Wang’s deputy this January. Since Xi declared war on corruption after taking office, 1.2 million of the party’s 88 million members have been punished for violating discipline.
cern regarding IS chemical weapons attacks. However IS-claimed insurgent attacks in Iraq and attacks targeting civilians attempting to flee Mosul cause far greater numbers of injuries and deaths to civilians. Iraqi forces launched the operation to retake Mosul in October and began a push to retake the city’s western half last month. After more than two years of slow territorial victories against IS by Iraqi ground forces backed by US-led coalition air power, western Mosul is the last significant urban area IS controls in Iraq.
Researchers create painkillers without side effects LONdON, MArcH 4 (IANS): Researchers have discovered a new way of developing painkillers that act only on inflamed tissues, while keeping healthy ones unaffected, suggesting that the severe side effects currently associated with these medicines might be avoided. When used in an animal model, their prototype of a morphine-like molecule was able to produce substantial pain relief in inflamed tissues without severe side effects, according to a study published in the journal Science. The team of researchers used computational simulation to analyse interactions at opioid receptors -- the cell’s docking sites for painkillers. “By analysing drug-opioid receptor interactions in damaged tissues, as opposed to healthy tissues, we were hoping to provide useful information for the design of new painkillers without harmful side effects,” said Christoph Stein from Charite - Universitatsmedizin Berlin in Germany. Opioids are a class of strong pain killers and are mainly used to treat pain associated with tissue damage and inflammation, such as that caused by surgery, nerve damage, arthritis or cancer. Common side effects associated with their use include drowsiness, nausea, constipation and dependency and, in some cases, respiratory arrest. In this study, the the researchers showed that they were able to analyse morphine-like molecules and their interactions with opioid receptors. They were able to successfully identify a new mechanism of action, which is capable of producing pain relief only in the desired target tissues -- those affected by inflammation. The new findings could lead to treating postoperative and chronic inflammatory pain without causing side effects. Doing so would substantially improve patient quality of life.

Resurgent Venus says no end in sight to playing career
NEW YORK, MARCH 4 (REUTERS): Seven-times grand slam winner Venus Williams, fresh off an inspirational run to the Australian Open finals at age 36, sees no end in sight on the tennis court, even envisioning another Olympics alongside her sister Serena. The American former world number one's oncourt form has been nothing short of remarkable considering she was diagnosed in 2011 with the debilitating Sjogren's syndrome, but Williams said that will not bring an end

to her career. "I'm planning interview on Friday. "That on playing tennis for a very dream is still going strong." long time yet," Williams Since being diagnosed told Reuters in a telephone with Sjogren's, an autoim-
mune disease that causes fatigue and joint pain and forced her to withdraw from the 2011 U.S. Open, Williams had to rebuild her career and re-evaluate her lifestyle. Rather than throw in the towel on one of the sport's great careers, Williams took on a new diet, exercise regimen and managed to come back and play at a high level. "Sjogren's is something that stays around, hangs around in your body and tries to take over but that's not how I see it. I'm running the show," said Williams, who is pro-
moting a #StrengthHasNoGender campaign by Brawny paper towels during Women's History Month. "It's definitely challenging, but it's mind over matter for me to be able to live the life I want to live regardless." Undaunted, by 2012 she teamed up with Serena to win their fifth Wimbledon women's doubles crown, and later that year won a third Olympic doubles gold in London with her sister, adding to her own singles gold claimed from the 2000 Sydney Games. Williams, who rose
from the cracked, public hard courts of Compton, California, as an African American woman to world number one by the age of 21 in a largely white sport, relishes the tests still to come. "I personally love a challenge and challenges motivate me," said Williams, who won the last of her seven grand slam titles in 2008. "I don't like to go to bed at night knowing that I haven't done my utmost to overcome any challenge that I've faced." Williams takes pride in breaking down barriers.
"Playing tennis, (my sister and I) were definitely very different for tennis at the time and that definitely broke down a lot of barriers," said Williams. "It's wonderful to see all kinds of people and all kinds of women playing tennis at all ages. So that's been a highlight for us, to see that happen." Next up for Williams will be the March 6-19 BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, where she and Serena endured racial taunts in 2001 leading them to boycott the event for nearly 15 years. Off the court, Williams
owns a fashion design business, an interior decorating company and with Serena is a limited owner of the NFL's Miami Dolphins but is not yet ready to give all of her attention to those endeavours. "There's still a lot of time to do a lot of things on and off the court," said Williams, who is ranked 13th in the world. Asked if there might be another chase for Olympic glory at the 2020 Games in Tokyo with sister Serena, Venus said: "That's my absolute dream. I have a dream partner."

n the year 1906 the world has experienced one of the greatest REVIVAL after the greatest revival that exploded in Acts - 2:1 - 4. This revival on the street #312 of Azusa, Los Angeles, California. Here is how it all happened: A man named William Seymour moved from Houston to pastor a church in Los Angeles. He preached his first sermon on the Holy Spirit one Sunday morning and returned that night to preach again. The door was padlocked, and a note informed him that he was FIRED. They don't want this strange stuff like Holy Spirit because they are the Baptist Christians and they've never heard or experience this strange baptism of Holy Spirit. Mr. Asbury was a member of this church. He came up to Seymour and said, "I knew they were going to do this but I've got a house over Bonnie Brae Street. You can preach from there". The Asbury also happened to be on one of the prayer groups, praying for REVIVAL. Soon Brother Seymour realized that he needed a much larger gathering place as the crowd grew larger and larger with each passing day. Looking for a place to meet, he found an abandoned warehouse that at one time was used as a Methodist church. The warehouse was perfect, and the only thing keeping Seymour from renting the building was money. That night, the need to move was heavy on Seymour's heart. He prayed to God for direction and before the evening was over, he had received his answer. God instructed him to get a trolley car as soon as the service ended and go to Pasadena. There was one hitch. By obeying God's instructions, Seymour was going to break the law - the sundown law - which stated that no person of color could be on the streets of Pasadena after dark. True to God's leadership, Seymour didn't argue but trusted and obeyed. He rode the trolley until God instructed him to get off. Then he followed as God guided him to an apartment nearby. Sister Carney, just a teenager but married, had arrived in Pasadena earlier that day. She was to meet with several of her friends who had been members of the First Baptist Church. They were hungry for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, which somehow didn't fit Baptist doctrine. They had been meeting together for months now in the apartment of one members of this group. This particular evening, they were coming together to pray for revival. They were certain that God was about to do something great and big in the Los Angeles area. Around 10:30 p.m. And after hours of fervent prayer,
Prelude to festival: Hengyi-sa: The village high priest/ harbinger conveying all good wishes to his community, proclaims the arrival of festive season and sets the date of the festival to enable for preparation of self, food, drinks, dresses etc. Preparatory agricultural activities such as jungle clearing for current jhum and millet cultivation in fallow jhum areas are supposed to have been completed well ahead of the commencement of the event. Kecimpu: This is an act of self cleansing and purification ahead of the festival and involves cleaning of clothes and belongings, seed treatment so that seeds sown after the festival are vigorous and healthy. Mlei zautau: This involves preparation of local rice brew especially meant to be served to the traditional fire makers.
Main Festival events: Day 1; Mlei-teu: This event marks the commencement of Mlei-ngyi festival and is usually performed by the clan headman (kizeu-pei) of
God brought together two elements of a force that usher in one of the greatest manifestations of God ever experienced by man since the day of Pentecost. Seymour walked up to this apartment where God led him and knocked on the door. Startled, the ladies went to the door together and opened it. They found a black man, blind in one eye, standing before them. Instead of slamming the door and calling the police, which would have been reasonable given the day and age, the owner of the apartment apprehensively asked, "Can I help you?”. The answer to this simple, fretful question would startle and astonish those gathered for prayer. After several months of fervent prayer, God responded in an unusual manner. Seymour replied, "You're praying for revival, right?". When the ladies responded unanimously Yes, Seymour made a bold statement, "I'm the man God has sent to preach that revival." Without hesitation, the ladies invited Seymour in. The prayer meeting that evening and those present were not coincidental. God had been preparing many for the miracle of Azusa. Without this ordained meeting, Azusa may have never happened. After some excited chatter, he preached to them and took up an offering that was more then enough to rent the Azusa Street warehouse. Now Seymour preached everyday in his rented house about revival and within a very short time people received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and thus the revival took place. Thousands and thousands have received and experiences miracles in this revival. Sometimes the glory of the lord was so strong that people see the pillar of fire which stood in the middle of the house for weeks. The miracles that happened in Azusa are unusual. When the presence of God get intense the people who were fellowshipping together can see glory clouds in the room and sometimes they can't even see the person next to them because it was so thick. Brother Seymour will sometimes in the middle of his preaching will call upon group of people and everyone who stood up will instantly be healed from all kinds of sicknesses and diseases. Sometimes Seymour will call, "all the cancer patient, tumor, withered arms and legs stand up” and instantly everyone will be healed. All kinds of healing, deliverance, miracles, signs and wonders took place in this explosion of revival at Azusa. It was recorded in history that withered hand and legs will be grow out, popping eyes who have lost it, tumor and cancer will instantly be healed, demonized people will be delivered, crippled and lame will walk, blind eyes were
each dormitory, who will make fire by using strands of bamboo (mleiria) and bamboo fine fibres and keep the flame burning until culmination of the festival. During the entire festive period, the clan headman (kizeupei) will abstain from having any indulgence with wife and family and maintain a separate hearth. Heteu hebak dap/ Leidi: This event involves slaughter of domestic animals meant for food during festival in different dormitories. The evening also witnesses engaged couples being invited to their respective would-be-in-lows for dinner and blessing; boy invited to would-bewife’s home and vice versa and this dinner invitation by village folks usually continues during the entire festive period. All male members usually with their cup of beer and meat preparations from home, while entering their dormitory usually make a howl as “Aoo...yieee… ketyei kesak ngyi, kehing kelia ngyi… aki, mlia pungla”…which means “festival of food and drinks, festival of prosperity and longevity”… Dreams were also
interpreted the next day. Day 2; Rodi: In the early morning hours, some matured male members from the two major clan viz. Heu and Hau, forays into the jungle to make wooden totem (Herie) for each clan which is usually a 6-8 feet length wooden plank split and shared one each from a single tree. The plank is then brought to the village with each clan carrying their respective wooden totem and placed on a clean predestined location in front of each dormitory. Then all male members in traditional attires gather to howl around the totem thence proceed to play ground for traditional games and sports like Hedau (kicking the plank), Heram (high jump), Tsugi (shot put), Hesim (long leap), Hejo (long jump), Hepo (wrestling) etc… This event usually witness wide participation and stiff competition from capable youngsters and the event marks the best athletes of the village for the year. The sporting event culminates with a traditional howl (Nroh) by male members congregated around the field (Hejo-pung).
Revival of God opened. In this revival people who walked the Azusa Street will fall under the power of the Holy Spirit where in the middle of the street people start confessed their sins, speak in tongues and be healed from every kind of sicknesses. People will received baptism of the Holy Spirit from ship, train from thousands and thousands mile away from Los Angeles. They will be convicted by the Holy Spirit where there was hundreds and thousands with tears on their eyes started praying to God for mercy, reconciling with one another, speaking in tongues. Club, bar and pub were closed down. The Spirit of God touched and speak to people who were in the those places and holding wine in their hands they will start crying to God for salvation and mercy. All this mighty and great things happened in this Azusa Street Revival. As the bible in John - 14:12 Jesus says, "Verily verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also. And greater works than these shall he do. Because I go unto My Father." The Azusa Street revival was the fulfillment of these promises of God. In 2013, a Pastor named Lou Angle had encountered a visitation from Jesus. And in this visitation Jesus told him that after 1080 days He will revisit American people once again and He will pour out His Spirit and sent forth His revival fire upon American people and the Church. Lou Angle was sharing his dreams with one of his closed friend that he sees a flight "FLY UNITED" which interpreted that only the United church can healed the divided nation. Lou Angle and his friends went to a stadium and claim it in Jesus name because there was such an unction in his heart to pray for this stadium after the prayer Lou Angle received an email from a young lady from Washington DC and she said, ‘ Lou I had a dream and in that dream I saw a huge stadium which is both football and Baseball field’, then he Google it and it was none other than the stadium he and His friend prayed Its Memorial Coliseum Stadium in Los Angeles, California, which is both football and baseball field where the Azusa Now meeting was supposed to be held. Lou angle count the date he saw in this visitation it was 9th April 2016, and it stunt him when he found this ordained date of God, it was the 110th anniversary of Azusa Street revival which took place in 1906. He started sharing his visions and dreams for this revival meeting and every time he shared this visitation of God with different churches all over America the youth and the church have experience the power of Holy Spirit in unusual ways. One of my classmates here in Rhe-
ma Bible Training College, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma sent me the first video of this Azusa Now conference promo. The moment I watched it , I felt such an anointing flowing through out my whole body. From the crown of my head to the sole of my feet, I felt the touch and power of the Holy Ghost so strong and powerful and I just knew in my spirit that this meeting was for me and I need to go there by any means. I've started praying for these meetings and as I shared about it with my pastor Zotuo Kiewhuo (Senior Pastor Koinonia Baptist Church) he said my trip to this meeting will be sponsored. I didn't asked or I dint expect that but I believe God knows me that I need it. I've shared with some of my Rhema Students friends but no one come out with positive responses. In my heart the Holy Spirit said 'wait I'll sent you company' and I waited. Only one week left and I've no body then suddenly my two friends Jason Yang and Sarah Renee Magrell from nowhere came out and said they really want to go to this Azusa Now meetings. The promise of Holy Spirit fulfilled to send me friends. We packed everything and started our journey from Broken Arrow - Oklahoma to Los Angeles, California to attend this meeting. For me it was not only a meeting but an ordination and impartation time for my life and ministry. The more we get closer to Los Angeles the more I felt the power of Holy Ghost become stronger in my spirit. We reached Los Angeles on 8th April, rested and then on 9th April the much awaited day for me a came as we wake at 3:00 a.m and drive our car to reach the stadium around 5:30 a.m. Early in the morning yet as we reached the Memorial Coliseum Stadium what I see shocked and surprised me! Around 30,000 people gathered around the gate! When I saw these people, I thanked God and prayed this prayer, "Lord I want to thank you for such a thirst and hunger that you put on this generation and especially the youth". As the gate opened everyone entered the stadium shouting and declaring ' Hallelujah', thanking Lord and glorifying God as if they've entered Heaven. So here I was in the stadium for the Azusa Now revival meeting, with full of tears in my eyes, tears of joy not sorrows. There was explosions going on within me and there was only one prayer in my heart the whole day, "JESUS I only want you and Your revival that you've promised. Please don't let this day passed by without giving me the desire of my heart. You've sent me to America so that I can receive and give it back to my people and the world, so dear Lord Jesus visit me today with your power and revival". For 15th hours we've been fasting and praying
Day 3; Bamsak: The day is significant with families sharing Hengyidom (festival food package) to family members living out of the village. The evening hours are occupied with male members visiting female dormitories and calling them out by name and having verbal exchanges. Interpretation of dreams follows the next day. Day 4; Tsingpo nsa: The day is marked with different clan collecting firewood and piling in their respective dormitories and the headman serving dormitory wine to members. In the evening hours, female dormitory members, usually singing soulful ballets visits male dormitories and perform traditional Heba-lia (finger identification), Heriang teu (tug-o-war) and Tsingpo-nsa (firewood snatch). Day 5; Zausa: Merry making in respective dormitories prevails. Day 6; Gwangnim: The final day in which the clan headman (Hegwangme) douses the Mlei-mi (festival fire). Members of the female dormitories collected Kemniebi (sticky rice) from respective households and after cooking shares it with male dor-
mitories as well as each female member including young girls.
and all around the stadium there was only one echo and shout that is, ‘Lord, Your REVIVAL.’ The Worship started and there are 120,000 people in the stadium United together as a church with one heart and one accord within every heart there's only one thing REVIVAL. Denominations like, First Baptist church, Methodist church, church of Christ, Assembly of God, charismatic, Catholic, Jewish churches etc and even many international ministries come together as a church, reconciling, forgiving one another, receiving one another with love. One of my favorite moments was when a Catholic father and a rabbi from Israel come on stage and asked forgiveness on behalf of the denomination. Suddenly all the ministers on the pulpit felt on the ground declaring respect and honor to one another denominations and the atmosphere changed when all the people came together with unity and love. Miracles started, signs and wonders is everywhere in the stadium, people started shouting and thanking God for the miracles. People who came on wheel chair started running, withered leg and hand straightened, blind eyes could see, Cancer patients were testifying of been healed, all kinds of sicknesses and diseases started to be healed in Jesus mighty name. The worship continues and the people continue to receive their miracles. The Whole day it was raining but non move from his/her seats, we've prayed for 15th hours and the rain can't stop the people because the Spirit of GOD is moving among His people. I had to cry a lot that moment because of God's move, His anointing and love. The whole day I was in the presence of God, Soaking and receiving what my God has for me. After the meeting was closed there was such an anointing and filling of Holy Spirit in my spirit that I was feeling as if I am going to explode. I was praying and waiting when I will get back to Nagaland and release this anointing of Revival upon our people. I believe God is preparing the present generation and especially the youth to move out of one's comfort zone, breaking all the religious barriers and mindset and carry this fire of Revival to revive the entire world and prepare people for the coming of our King and Savior Lord Jesus Christ. I just know that revival has began and this time it will be not like the Pentecost day of the Acts or Azusa revival but this time it will be the greatest revival that the world and ages have never seen before and will never see again. Many prophets and prophetess have seen the coming revival upon our Naga people and prophesy upon our people that in this end time’s revival our Naga people
will carry the flames of fire, fire of revival and will reach out to every parts of the world. We will change nations and transform nations with this REVIVAL fire. For all this years I've been praying for revival and now I see it has begun and it has started to create that thirst and hunger upon the generation and the youth of Naga. Transformation Crusade is one such meeting that I've witnessed. Thousands and thousands people flooding the ground and filled the stadium just to receive the miracles and the power of the Holy Spirit. Thousands of young hearts praising and worshiping God with one accord without any discrimination of race, colors, tribes etc. “This is the Lord's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalms 118:23-24) God spoke to me some few months ago when I was praying for our Naga people that, "Only REVIVAL can change our Naga people" Are you ready? Are you hungry? Are you thirsty? Are you prepared? Are you ready to surrender your life to Jesus? Are you ready to receive? Are you ready to reconcile? Only those who are willing can receive this REVIVAL. God never compels us so He will touch who are willing to surrender his/her life to Him. As prophesy by Prophet Joel 2:28 - 32, God will send His REVIVAL SPIRIT to this generation and to His church. Awake, awake, awake, open your eyes and change your heart. Returned to Jesus now. Oh! my people, my Naga people lets come together, forgive one another, reconcile with one another, receive one another with love and compassion, break all the ‘ism’ that has build gap among us, hatred that has break all the bonds and love we have for one another. It's time for our Naga people to come together as a united body, rebuilt and reshape the church which we have destroyed because of jealousy, gossips, hatred and strife. It's time for us to arise, time to awake from our sleep and ready to move with this Revival which God has ordained our people for the great harvest. Arnold Schwarzenegger T quits Celebrity Apprentice
Paris Jackson signs with top modeling agency

he 69-year-old actor and businessman took on the role after the nowPresident Donald Trump left to begin his presidential campaign in 2015, but after one season he has decided to part ways with the programme which sees a group of celebrities pit their business skills against one another because it involves too much ''baggage''. Arnold said in a statement: ''I loved every second of working with NBC and Mark Burnett. Everyone from the celebrities to the crew to the marketing department was a straight 10, and I would absolutely work with all of them again on a show that doesn't have this baggage.'' The 'Terminator' star believes the involvement of the President who still operates as an executive producer on the show - has created ''division'', as celebrities no longer want to ''participate'' for fear of seeming as though they support President Trump's often controversial political policies. He said in an interview with Empire magazine published on Friday (03.03.17): ''With Trump
being involved in the show, people have a bad taste and don't want to participate as a spectator or as a sponsor or in any other way support the show. It's a very divisive period now, and I think this show got caught up in all that division.'' Meanwhile, the former Governor of California recently hit out at commander-in-chief Donald Trump after he mocked
the show's decline in ratings since he departed. Trump urged people to ''pray for Arnold'' and branded the new series of 'Celebrity Apprentice' a ''disaster'' during the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC, last month. He said: ''We had tremendous success on 'The Apprentice', and when I ran for president, I had to leave the show... and they
hired a big, big movie star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to take my place, and we know how that turned out. ''The ratings went right down the tubes. It's been a total disaster, and [executive producer] Mark [Burnett] will never, ever bet against Trump again. And I want to just pray for Arnold, if we can, for those ratings, OK?'' In response, Arnold
quickly shared a video online and suggested he and the president ''switch jobs''. He said: ''Hey Donald, I have a great idea: Why don't we switch jobs? You take over TV because you're such an expert at ratings, and I take over your job, and then people can finally sleep comfortably again.'' Source: Contactmusic

She divulged to Rolling Stone: 'I've had self-esteem issues for a really, really long time. Plenty
of people think I'm ugly, and plenty of people don't. 'But there's a moment when I'm modeling where I forget about my self-esteem issues and focus on what the photographer's telling me and I feel pretty. And in that sense, it's selfish.' Joining the modeling agency will put Jackson alongside established fashion industry heavy-weights Gisele, Ambrosio, Gigi and Bella Hadid, Hailey Baldwin, and more. Jackson will play Rachel

ritish rocker Rod Stewart apologized on Friday after he appeared to mimic a desert execution by Islamic State militants, with critics saying it was disrespectful to victims of the group. Stewart, 72, appeared in a clip posted on his wife's internet Instagram account in which he draws his finger across the throat of a man kneeling in front of him. It was filmed ahead of a concert he performed in Abu Dhabi. Critics said the clip was reminiscent of Islamic State propaganda videos featuring the beheading of Western hostages. Stewart, known for his 1970s hits "Maggie May" and "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy", apologized but said his actions had been misinterpreted and that he had been recreating fictional scenes from TV shows such as "Game of Thrones". "From re-enacting The Beatles' Abbey Road crossing to spontaneously playing out Game Of Thrones, we were simply larking about pre-show," he said in a statement. "Understandably this has been misinterpreted and I send my deepest apologies to those who have been offended."

A
n evangelist preacher is calling for a boycott of the upcoming Walt Disney film "Beauty and the Beast" because it features a gay character, saying that the company is trying to promote an LGBT agenda to children. Franklin Graham, the North Carolina-based son of evangelist preacher Billy Graham and president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, called for the boycott in a Facebook post on Thursday. By Friday the post had been shared more than 88,000 times, and a movie theatre in Alabama said it will not screen the film. "They’re trying to push the LGBT agenda into the hearts and minds of your children - watch out!," Graham wrote. Graham said Disney was making an attempt to "normalise this (gay) lifestyle." Earlier this week, the film's director, Bill Condon, told British gay lifestyle magazine Attitude that the movie will feature a gay character - LeFou, the goofy sidekick to main villain Gaston - for the first time in Disney's history. Walt Disney Co (DIS.N), which has long been known for its animated movies and other films aimed at families, did not immediately return requests for comment on Friday. The movie, a live-action remake of Disney's animated classic film, will begin its worldwide rollout on March 16. Starring Emma Watson as young Belle who falls in love with a horrific-looking man, it is one of the most buzzed about movies of the spring. According to some box office analysts, it could bring in upwards of $100 million in North America on its opening weekend. "I hope Christians everywhere will say no to Disney," Graham said in his Facebook post, asking supporters to let Disney know their feelings about the movie. Film director Condon told Attitude magazine that the character of LeFou will come to terms with his sexuality, and said the ending of the movie brings a payoff and "a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie." The owners of the Henagar Drive-In Theatre in Henagar, Alabama, announced their decision to boycott the film in a Facebook post on Thursday. Describing themselves as Christian, the owners said: "We will not compromise on what the Bible teaches." "If we cannot take our 11 year old granddaughter and 8 year old grandson to see a movie we have no business watching it," they wrote. "If I can't sit through a movie with God or Jesus sitting by me then we have no business showing it." Source: Reuters

Australia's Lyon floors India with 8-wicket haul

BENGALURU, MARCH 4 (REUTERS): Off-spinner Nathan Lyon claimed career-best figures of eight for 50 to help Australia bundle out India for 189 on the first day of the second test at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday. It was the third batting meltdown in a row for the hosts, who were dismissed for 105 and 107 in the opening test in Pune during a 333-run loss inside three days. India had posted three consecutive totals of
600-plus before this series. In a 16-over spell either side of lunch, Lyon dismissed Cheteshwar Pujara, India skipper Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane on a pitch that had offered extra bounce and turn for the slow bowlers. The 29-year-old returned for his second spell after tea and added five more wickets to finish with the best figures by a visiting bowler in India, whose hopes of levelling the series suffered a big setback.
Australia openers David Warner and Matt Renshaw then piled on the misery by staying unbeaten on 23 and 15 respectively to take their side to 40 without loss at the close. Warner was dropped on nine by Rahane at gully off paceman Ishant Sharma to complete a wretched day for the world's top-ranked test side. Kohli made a good start when he won the toss and opted to bat but paceman Mitchell Starc soon had the
hosts on the back foot when he dismissed Abhinav Mukund, a replacement for injured Murali Vijay, in the third over. Playing his first test in almost six years, Mukund's scoreless innings lasted eight deliveries with the left-handed batsman missing a full toss from Starc to be given out lbw. PATCHY RAHUL Australia captain Steve Smith waited seven overs before handing the ball
to left-arm spinner Steve O'Keefe, whose 12-wicket haul in Pune helped the tourists cruise to victory. O'Keefe should have captured Rahul's wicket but Peter Handscomb dropped a low chance to his left at short cover to reprieve the batsman on 30. Rahul played some loose shots but also entertained the sizeable crowd with crisply driven boundaries in his 90. He was dropped again on 61 by Warner at leg slip off Lyon. Pujara rarely looked troubled in his innings of 17 before he got an inside edge off Lyon on to his pads and this time Handscomb held on to the catch at short leg to end a 61-run secondwicket stand. Kohli started strongly with two cover driven fours but he was given out lbw for 12 without playing a shot to a straight delivery and his attempt to overturn the decision on review proved futile. Rahane was out for 17, stumped by Matthew Wade while Karun Nair, who replaced spin bowling allrounder Jayant Yadav in the Indian team, fell for 26 in similar fashion to O'Keefe. India lost their last five wickets for 15 runs - all to Lyon - including that of Rahul, who holed out trying to hit a big shot in his quest to get to his hundred.

SA retain No.1 ODI spot after thrashing Kiwis
AUCKLAND, MARCH 4 (IANS): South Africa retained their number one spot in the International Cricket COuncil (ICC) One-day International (ODI) rankings after thrashing New Zealand by six wickets in the fifth and final 50over game, to clinch the series 3-2, here on Saturday. The Proteas remained on their pre-series tally of 119 points, one point ahead of Australia while the Kiwis too remained at 113 points in third position, with India on fourth
at 112 points. Had South Africa lost the match and the series, it would have been edged by Australia on decimal points with both teams on 118 points in such a scenario. In the final ODI, the visitors made light work of the home batsmen by bowling them out for a paltry 149 before Test skipper Faf du Plessis's patient unbeaten 51, helped them overhaul the target with more than 17 overs to spare.
Pacer Kasigo Rabada scalped three wickets while leg-spinner Imran Tahir and medium pacer Andile Phehlukwayo took two wickets each as New Zealand found the going tough after being sent in to bat at the Eden Park. Colin de Grandhomme topscored with 32 runs while opener Dean Brownlie, James Neesham and Mitchell Santner scored an identical 24 each to help the hosts to the meagre target. In reply, the Proteas were off to
a poor start before du Plessis and skipper AB de Villiers (23) forged a 40-run fourth wicket stand to take the side near the three-figure mark. Once de Villiers was packed back after his 21-ball knock consisting of two fours and as many sixes, David Miller (45 not out) joined du Plessis to ensure that the Proteas reached the target without any more hiccups. Miller's flamboyant knock included six boundaries and two sixes.

Leaders Trinity FC suffered an upset while STAFAC Patkai registered their first win on Saturday in the ongoing Case Premier League played at the Police Ground, NAP Complex, Chumukedima. Trinity, who lead the league with 9 points having won all three of their matches, lost to Nizams FC 2-1 while STAFAC defeated Case FC 2-0.
Nizams had a flurry of chances early on with strikers Pito and Aloto failing to capitalize from oneon-one situations. The deadlock was broken in the 22nd minute when Sopei caught the Trinity goalkeeper off-guard scoring from a free-kick from near the centre. Theyo then doubled the lead 14 minutes into the second half. An undeterred Trinity fought back as Lipok Jamir cut the lead 10 minutes later slotting home with
his left foot from close range. Trinity pushed for an equalizer till the end of the 80-minute match but Nizams held on to earn three precious points. Earlier in the first match, Case FC were dealt their third successive defeat by STAFAC. The first half had ended goalless in the contest between two evenly matched teams. But in the second half, STAFAC found the net twice through Ruuleto Vakha (54th minute) and
Inito Chishi (60th). Vakha’s goal had a touch of fortune after his initial effort got past the goalkeeper’s glove and hit the bar. As luck would have it, the rebound hit the Case FC goalkeeper in the back of the head before bouncing into the net. With two wins and a draw, Nizams are second in the table with 7 points and is now the only unbeaten team in the league while STAFAC are on 5 points from 4 games.

East Bengal beat Lajong to take top spot SHILLONG, MARCH 4 (IANS): Riding on a double from Chris Payne, East Bengal regained their place at the top of the table by edging past Shillong Lajong FC 2-1 in an I-League football game here on Saturday. Payne (9th, 33rd) scored a first half brace while Ileague top-scorer Dipanda Dicka (64th) netted his ninth goal of the season but it proved to be in vain. The win took Trevor Morgan's team to 27 points from 12 games, one ahead of second placed Aizawl FC who won 2-0 earlier in the day. Lajong have 16 points from 11 outings. The visitors took the lead within nine minutes, Payne making the most of some slack defending and goal-
keeping by Lajong to score his first goal for the visitors. Three minutes later, coach Thangboi Singto's wards almost drew level but Dicka put Isaac Vanlalsawma's delectable cross inches wide. The whole stadium started celebrating when Bipin Singh dragged a thunderous volley just wide after creating the move by setting up Vanlalsawma, whose initial shot was half cleared by East Bengal defenders. Bipin was outstanding in the half, carving out a delicious chance for Samuel Shadap. But just when it looked like the hosts were spurred after the early setback, East Bengal doubled their tally
against the run of play. Payne was at it again, chesting down a free kick calmly from the halfway line and slotting home a volley with keeper Vishal Kaith left stranded as East Bengal went into the break 2-0 up. In the second half, the home team started with more flair and got their reward four minutes into the hour mark. Dicka got on the end of a beautiful Shadap lob inside the box after the latter was set up expertly by Yuta Kinowaki with a cross field pass. In the 71st minute, Lajong came close to levelling things but T.P. Rehenesh saved well from Shadap's shot from outside the box.
