Assam-nagaland-Manipur: Pursuing peace

‘our future depends on Paradigm shift from ‘grand narratives’ to ‘creative imagination’ understanding each other’ Morung Express News

Role of Church and women in peace building

Dimapur | May 13

The inability to understand the ethnic identities and unique historicity of peoples living in the North East region of the Indian sub-continent has produced “new injustices and new conflicts.” These can be resolved only through a “paradigm shift” from “grand narratives” of the ‘nation-state’ to a “creative imagination” for shared humanity. This would create the muchneeded onus for peace in the region. How? Ways forward were deliberated upon through sharing experiences at the Nagaland-Manipur Peace Activists’ Meet underway at Life Spring Corner, Khermahal, from May 13 to 14. The Meet has been organised by the North Eastern Social Research Centre (NESRC), Guwahati, along with Oriental Theological Seminary, Dimapur, in collaboration with Peace Channel, Dimapur. “We must shed dogmatic idealism of the past—living in the past is making us slaves of the present,” noted Rev. Dr. Wati Aier, Convenor of the Forum for Naga Reconciliation, while delivering the keynote address here today. Hard etched radical views developed among the “ethnic tribal” groups of the region in response to “hegemonic” Indian nationalism imposed upon the region from the middle of the 20th century. “Ethnic-tribal-nationalism” emerged in order to “counter the aggression of the hegemonic political unit,” maintained Dr. Wati. At the social, political and geographical peripheries of the nationstate, these groups existed in political spaces of “self governance and independence.” Here, they created their “own unique histories.” Disregarding all of this, over the past half century, “most ethnictribal identities have been forcefully subdued in favour of state

controlled mechanisms or have been co-opted into the dominant political regime through narratives of peace, development and nation-building,” he explained. At the heart of resolving “new conflicts” is, thus, the recognition that “every ethnic-tribal group has a social and political identity and a history.” Their historicity, said Dr. Wati, is “an essential element of their lived-ness and aspirations.” From this is derived a “social and political destiny” that is “intrinsic and inevitable” and “ultimately legitimised as universal human values.” While the resolution of these “new conflicts” would require a deviation from “conventional diplomacy, militarism or the political offer of the stick and the carrot,” a genuine move towards peace will require “de-constructing” the dominant narrative of sovereignty. Till date, however, the Government of India has “not taken seriously the ethnic-tribal paradigm,” continuing to stigmatise these groups and denying them “any serious political hearings.” “A diplomacy without ethical will and a politics without a global ethic always produces new injustices and thus new conflicts, and new wars,” the FNR Convenor

Lightning strike kills one in Zunheboto ZUNHEBOTO, MAY 13 (DIPR): A man was killed by a lightning strike at Ngozubo village, some 8 KM away from Aghunato town under Zunheboto district on May 11. The incident occurred at around 5:30 PM. The deceased has been identified as Hokhevi Sumi aged around 45 years who was cleaning up the premises of his house when the lightning struck.

maintained. This applies also to ethnic-tribal groups of the region that should recognise that “all identities are unique” and this uniqueness is “never at the expense of the other.” All peoples’ basic democratic rights can be guaranteed and implemented by recognising this, and applying “creative imagination” that sheds “dogmatic idealism” of the past. While the inaugural session was chaired by Peace Channel’s Fr. CP Anto, a discussion on the issues raised, participants from Nagaland and Manipur shared notes on peace engagement in a session chaired by NESRC’s Dr. Walter Fernandes. “It is important for us to listen to, and learn from, each other,” observed Dr. Fernandes, listening to, and encapsulating, a host of issues brought up by peace activists from the region. The platform aptly created the much-needed space for dialogue, and perhaps an ensuing shared humanity, of people/ activists of the region. As Dr. Pangernungba Kechu from OTS put it, “there is much moral and creative imagination in the North East region but structural violence needs to be overcome through dialogue.”

he evening session of the Nagaland-Manipur Peace Activists’ Meet discussed the role of the Church and participation of women in peace building. A section of Naga church leaders were of the view that the Church being the “most potential and permanent institution” in the context of Naga society, cannot totally separate itself from politics. Suggesting that the Church should play a guiding role in peace building, a church leader referred to the Church in Nagaland as a “sleeping lion” and that it was time to wake up the lion. Another peace activist from Manipur also concurred by saying that the role of the Church is not only spiritual but also secular. Some women activists were of the opinion that women’s say were limited in affairs of the Church and that it needs to shed the patriarchal leanings. Another participant suggested that the Church be more effective in peace building and not only dwell on the spiritual aspects but also organize events like peace through sports and other secular activities for the youth. Besides the apex tribal organizations and the Church, a Naga peace activist informed that the “social media” was an emerging force and already creating a revolution in Nagaland by highlighting corruption, social evils and menaces including extortion, which are also roadblocks to peace.

The committee would include representatives from State Child Protection Society (SCPS), Legal Services, Police, Labour Department, Education Department, All Nagaland Private School Association (ANPSA), Childline, Church, Student body, Village Child Protection Committee etc. They also appealed to the state government to frame its own child protection policy. Meanwhile, on the rise in juvenile crimes and sexual abuse of children, Kohima Deputy Commissioner Rovilatuo Mor urged various sections of the society to spare no effort in sensitizing the children on their rights and eliminate all abuses.

DIMAPUR, MAY 13 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) today informed that it would launch a protest dharna (Sitin-protest) on May 20 in the respective DC office premises “to deliver the rights under MGNREGA to the people.” A press note from the NPCC informed that the sit-in protest will be addressed by NPCC office bearers, PCC members of respective districts and DCC office bearers including volunteers. It stated that “according to the Independence day message, Nagaland has 4.15 Lakh MGNREGA Job Card holders.” “If so, the Government should be able to generate Rs. 643.25 Crs annually, whereas Nagaland state could only generate 199.47 Crs according to MGNREGA official website, for which the VDB Secretaries and VCCs gave blank cheques on demand from RD department. This is the reason of corruption,” the NPCC alleged. It stated that wages money cannot be converted to any other schemes nor can it be diverted. “The true essence of ‘Convergence’ is that funds from other departments can be diverted to employ unskilled labour under MGNREGA to help increase beyond the 100 days wages. In no case can MGNREGA 100 days wages be diverted, misused or converted to other schemes,” it added.

nnagaDAo protest on May 17 and 18

DIMAPUR, MAY 13 (MExN): The Network of Nagaland Drugs and AIDS Organisation (NNagaDAO) Executive board and all the chief functionaries of NGOs/CBOs implementing Targeted Intervention (TI) have resolved to start its first phase of agitation by closing down all Drop-In Centres (DICs) on May 17 and 18. A pres note from the NNagaDAO stated that the protest has been called to express “resentment towards the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) and Nagaland State AIDS control Society (NSACS) for non release of fund.” It expressed frustration that despite their time, energy and resources invested in HIV targeted intervention programs, “the grants meant for the said programs was not

released or reimbursed by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) and Nagaland State AIDS control Society (NSACS).” “Thousands of NGOs/CBOs staffs working in the field of HIV/AIDS, the vendors, house rent etc. are not paid,” it informed while demanding NACO and NSACS to immediately release funds to their partner NGOs and CBOs as per the Contract signed between NACO/NSACS. The contract was signed as per World Bank guideline and implemented programs as per the MOU of the Annual Action Plan 2015-16, it informed. The NNagaDAO further appealed to all key populations to “understand and cooperate with our partner NGOs/CBOs.” While acknowledging the importance of un-interrupt ser-

vices “and in no way is trying to ignore your right to health,” the NNagaDAO said it has been compelled to stop providing services for two days. It however informed that as it is, “commodities are running out of stock in DICs and without commodities opening the DICs is meaningless.” “NGOs/CBOs cannot continue filling the commodities on credit from vendors or allow our staffs to work on empty stomach, their children school fee and house rent unpaid etc.” It reminded that the NNagaDAO has expressed its concern many times. “However our concerns and grievance are not addressed, therefore we are compelled to demand our right through democratic peaceful protest,” it stated.

The 2nd Round Table Meet between Assam and Naga civil societies under the aegis of Asom Sahitya Sabha and Naga Hoho was held here today at Hotel Japfu. Naga Hoho president P. Chuba Ozukum said “if we have goodwill towards each other and a unity of purpose, definitely we can overcome the challenges. Commenting on the unsettled interstate boundary issue, Ozukum said “we cannot allow such issues and situations to hold us ransom forever and hindering us from having a good neighborly relationship.” He added that with a political settlement to the Naga issue expected soon, Nagas and the Assamese have to live as neighbors no matter what. Stating that Assamese-Naga relations have a “glorious past,” he urged rejuvenation of that relationship through cooperation and interdependency. “We can definitely help create an environment of trust where the peopleto-people contact and relations are enhanced. We have tremendous faith on human capacities and goodness,” he said. Asom Sahitya Sabha president Dr. Druva Jyoti Bora meanwhile called for inclusiveness, while urging efforts to ensure that there is no more conflict between the two states. He also stressed on the need to have discussions frequently and resolve the issues that arise from time to time. Addressing the inaugural function as the chief guest, former minister of Nagaland Tiameren Aier questioned the seriousness of political leaders in solving the Assam-Nagaland border by casting aspersions on each other without any achievement. Maintaining that civil societies are trustworthy, he said that a continuous dialogue between the Assamese and Nagas through enhanced cultural exchanges, trade and business and people-to-people contact would help bringing an amicable solution. “Unless we stand up together, the governments, including the Centre and States

will continue to have excuses and the problem will remain unresolved.” In this, he called upon the civil societies of both the state, i.e. the Asom Sahitya Sabha and Naga Hoho to convince the respective government to resolve the issue amicably. He further called upon the younger generation to take the responsibility of upholding the age old neighbourly relation, with the wisdom of elders as a guiding force. Also addressing the gathering as the guest of honour, Nagaland Parliamentary Secretary for PWD (Housing) Er Levi Rengma said: “We must remember and also accept the fact that the Assamese and Nagas have to live together as neighbors whether we like or not.” He cautioned that continuing the misunderstandings by looking at the past mistakes would prevent both states from achieving progress. Reminding that that being good neighbours holds the key to fraternal peace and communal harmony, he said “our future will depend on our understanding each other.” Noted Naga peace activist Niketu Iralu meanwhile informed: “This Assam Naga dialogue is in the process of being established as a Forum- which will be a civil society initiative/movement for greater good of the society on the basis of the principles of democracy. It will work for strengthening friendship and fraternity between the people of Nagaland and Assam.” Prof. Udayon Misra felt that peopleto-people contact is immensely essential for bringing down wrong perceptions. He further hoped that the doors of this region would be opened up to ensure more constructive means of working out ways for the people to exchange their views and know each other. The meet was followed by a technical session, open discussion and adoption of resolution. Mention may be made here that the 1st Asom-Naga Round Table Meet was held at Guwahati on October 9, 2015, wherein the two neighbors resolved to strengthen friendship and fraternity and enhance cooperation between people of the two states.

THE MORUNG EXPRESS

‘Greater introspection required to deal with unemployment problem’ Morung Express News Dimapur | May 13

Parliamentary Secretary for Irrigation & Flood Control, N. Jacob Zhimomi called for greater introspection to deal with the problem of unemployment in Nagaland. Speaking at the inaugural session of the 23rd Bienniel General Conference of the Diphupar Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) at the NEZCC, 3rd Mile, Zhimomi asserted that reviving the culture of hardwork “which our forefathers instilled in us” has become all the more imperative in a society wholly dependent on the government sector for jobs. The belief that government job is the best and the only option has overburdened the government with most students only too eager to complete college and wait for government jobs to come their way. However, he maintained that simply getting a college degree is not enough. “Merely getting a degree… getting an education which cannot be used will not give you a job,” he said. Reminding that the government sector is now saturated and with excess employment making the

matter more problematic, he added that the state government cannot be expected to employ each and every educated youth. With the Nagaland state government surviving on ‘Grant-in-aid’ from the Central government and with 60-70 percent of the state budget going towards remuneration of employees, he stated that little gets

the educational front to overcome the challenges. While urging the students to use the “student life” to the maximum potential and inculcating a positive approach to life, he said that resigning to a life of criticism and accusing one another will not bring the desired result. Calling for prudence in the sphere of social media, he held that the medium should be used wisely and for good cause and not merely to criticise the leaders and the government for all the problems facing the society today. “Trying to belittle your leader, remember you’re belittling yourself too.” Outgoing DNSU president, Sakulemba Jamir challenged the students “to get out your comfort zone” and look for avenues to become self-reliant. According to him, the Naga society inspite of all its flaws has scope “to look at the brighter side” and march forward. The conference witnessed the election of a new team of DNSU office bearers. The swearing in ceremony was conducted at the valedictory programme, which had Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, C. Apok Jami as the chief guest.

Diphupar Naga Students’ Union holds 23rd Bienniel Conference left for development activities. Such a scenario calls for greater emphasis on skill development or skilling the youth, he said. With skills either acquired or inherent, the state’s youth will be in a position to become self-employed. This will in turn lessen the burden on the government and allow it to focus on other areas of development, while it will provide a much needed thrust to the state’s static economy, he said. President of the Naga Students Federation, Subenthung Kithan while stating that the Naga youth today is confronted with many challenges held that it is imperative for the DNSU to focus on

Since then the state government have not shown any seriousness despite of several appeals by different NGOs and concerned citizens. He said that Beekeeping is regarded as a poor person’s activity, unworthy of investment and support and in many developing countries beekeepers lack assistance and the services that they need. It has various advantages like requires no landownership, low investment, less time consuming, produces honey & by-products, provides medicines & maintains biodiversity. Since 80% of the area is covered with vegetation and agriculture being the backbone of Nagaland he encouraged all the farmers and SHGs to take up the activity as it increases crop production by acting as pollinating agent. Later, Francis Kikon, Project Assistant, (NBHM) demonstrated on “Han-

He also emphasis on the health management for the control of diseases in pigs. THE MORUNG EXPRESS

The occupational hazards of aid work for 90 percent of victims, roughly in proportion to their numbers in the field, Humanitarian Outcomes said.

By Katie Nguyen

ou're an aid worker speeding back to base after a long, cold day questioning people who have fled fighting about what they need to survive. Out of nowhere a girl runs into the road and is knocked over by your driver. Within minutes, your four-wheel drive is surrounded by bystanders. First they shout, then they start banging windows and rocking the vehicle. Before long they prise open the car door and pull your driver out. Some are armed. What do you do? It's perhaps the toughest dilemma aid workers face during their brief stint in war-torn "Badistan" in reality, a training camp in the grounds of a golf course near Gatwick Airport where they are confronted with mass casualties, a minefield and gun battles in various role-play scenarios. The three-day course run by security risk management company, International Location Safety (ILS), is one of scores aimed at mitigating the risks of working in the field where aid staff kidnappings have quadrupled since 2002. The perils of the job

came under scrutiny in November when a court in Oslo found the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) guilty of gross negligence and awarded damages to a former employee abducted by gunmen from a Kenyan refugee camp in 2012. It was the first case of its kind to reach a court judgment, igniting debate over whether aid agencies would become more riskaverse as a result. "There has been an increasing bunkerisation of aid workers who operate out of compounds and are restricted in where they go," said ILS Managing Director George Shaw. "It does worry me that it will continue to happen. But that would be a lack of understanding of what the (NRC) ruling means. It doesn't mean we shouldn't do high-risk programmes. It means we should do high-risk programmes safely." NO SUCH THING AS RISK-FREE Michael O'Neill, a former director of global safety and security at Save the Children International and now deputy chair of INSSA, an international NGO safety and

security group, said the NRC case made it clear that organisations could do better. "It's not enough just to write (a security risk management system) down on paper. It's not enough just to say it's there," he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. "If it can happen to NRC, then who among us is not vulnerable at some level?" Convening the first

World Humanitarian Summit on the biggest issues facing the delivery of relief, U.N. SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon has called on warring parties to respect and protect aid workers, as well as the wounded and sick, from attack. The summit in Istanbul later this month comes as leading aid officials warn of ever-increasing humanitarian needs due to crises

ranging from Syria's conflict to climate change. The year 2013 was the worst for aid workers with 460 killed, kidnapped or seriously wounded, according to Humanitarian Outcomes which has collected data on the topic since 1997. Afghanistan, Sudan, Somalia, Pakistan and Syria have gained a reputation for being most dangerous for aid work-

ers, with the majority of attacks over the past decade or so occurring there. Afghanistan alone accounted for 27 percent of those attacks between 2005 and 2014. But Somalia, with fewer aid workers, has seen an even higher rate of violence against humanitarians. National staff are by far the most vulnerable. In 2014, they accounted

REDUCING THE THREATS Few believe all risks can be eliminated, but many agree that one of the most important ways to lessen them is to get the support of locals. Too often aid workers are targeted because they are no longer perceived to be neutral. Wouter Kok, a security adviser for Medecins Sans Frontieres, said assuring all sides in a conflict of the agency's impartiality is key to its security approach. "We have to get back to that independence," said Kok, who works for the Dutch arm of the medical charity. "What we've seen in the last 10 to 20 years is that belligerents have tried to use humanitarian aid to win hearts and minds, and sometimes organisations have allowed themselves to be used," he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. Understanding the nuances of a conflict, the local culture and people's motivations, together with strong negotiating skills, are also critical to mitigating risks, experts said.

Big organisations are increasingly aware that aid programmes need to be designed with security in mind, INSSA's O'Neill said. "Good programming and good security go hand in hand." For example, poorly designed food distributions can quickly turn ugly. But seeking the input of local communities, giving people a clear idea of what they will receive and setting up a complaints table away from the lines are some ways to reduce the risk, he said. Caring for the mental health of aid workers is an overlooked but crucial aspect of keeping them safe, said Sara Pantuliano, director of humanitarian programmes at the London-based Overseas Development Institute. "The one thing that is forgotten the most is the levels of stress and trauma aid workers experience, and that is particularly true for local staff because they often have family affected by this crisis," Pantuliano said. "I think people don't even raise the issue of being under stress or the threat of burning out or needing a proper break, needing to recuperate, because they may be accused of not being fit for the job," she added.

The Growing Divide Between Game 6 Garden-Starting Tips To Give Your Kids Green Thumbs of Thrones and George R.R. Martin Susan Lutz

T

he latest chapter from George R. R. Martin’s long-gestating novel The Winds of Winter, released on the author’s website yesterday, is typically tantalizing material. Like the rest his Song of Ice and Fire series, it’s told entirely from the point of view of a specific character—this time Princess Arianne Martell, the heiress to the kingdom of Dorne, as she ponders a new challenger to the Iron Throne of Westeros. It adds more context to two crucial stories and lends further depth to one of Martin’s most dynamic female characters. It also has nothing to do with the hit HBO series that the novels inspired. Game of Thrones, currently in its sixth season, has largely diverged from Martin’s books, telling stories past their current end point in the completed novels as the annual demands of TV production outpace the author’s decades-long writing process. Fans have worried that the show, which creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have said will probably end after two more truncated seasons, will spoil Martin’s grand conclusion. But as every chapter released from The Winds of Winter shows, including this latest checkin with Arianne, there’s nothing to fear. Martin is telling tales of characters the show’s viewers will

never meet, on quests that will never make it to the screen. And the show is actually beginning to work toward an ending, which leaves Martin free to do something else entirely. Fans have also long accepted that Game of Thrones will finish before every chapter of A Song of Ice and Fire hits bookstores. Even if Martin had finished The Winds of Winter last year as he intended, he would have had to turn around the seventh and supposedly final entry within a year or two to beat the show. He hasn’t worked at that pace in a long time: The shortest turnaround between books was just under two years between the second and third novels in the series, and the last entry came out in 2011, the year Game of Thrones premiered. But when Martin announced to fans that Winds of Winter wouldn’t be done in time for season six of Game of Thrones, he tried to reassure readers. “Some of the ‘spoilers’ you may encounter in season six may not be spoilers at all ... because the show and the books have diverged, and will continue to do so,” he wrote. The new Arianne chapter, which Martin has read aloud at fan conventions, is a perfect example of that divergence, coming at an opportune moment since the show has begun killing pivotal characters. Arianne, the heiress of Dorne, isn’t a character in the show at all—she was replaced by a male heir,

Trystane, a minor character in the books. His elevation sparked outcry from fans who thought the show was losing a compelling female leader, but in Martin’s pages she endures, negotiating the future of her kingdom and reckoning with a new contender to the throne. That character, the pretender Aegon Targaryen, also isn’t in the show. Neither is his companion Jon Connington, who’s discussed extensively in the new chapter. Martin has also released chapters about Stannis Baratheon and Barristan Selmy (both killed off by HBO last season), and Victarion Greyjoy (who doesn’t exist on the show and likely never will). As the show came closer to overtaking Martin’s books, he made more and more references to the “butterfly effect” of TV plotting, where Game of Thrones’s attempts to simplify the grander story arc would only lead to bigger differences between the books and show. What first felt like a cop-out now feels on point: Readers are no longer worried the show’s going to spoil the novels, just that it’ll move forward clumsily with its adaptation efforts. Consider a semi-humorous Kickstarter campaign to “fix” the show’s Dorne plotline, which was largely dispatched in the opening episode of this season. In Martin’s books, Dorne is a powerful sector of Westeros under the rule of the infirm but

wise Prince Doran, who’s scheming to position his children for greatness as the realm falls into chaos. On the show, Doran was an ineffectual fool, eventually betrayed and murdered by his brother’s paramour. His death scene, and the subsequent murder of his son, felt like Benioff and Weiss washing their hands of a plotline they never quite knew how to weave into the larger story. The Kickstarter campaign says it needs $20 million to replicate the show’s style and production value and shoot enough material to paper over the problem areas. The campaign’s creators probably aren’t going to make it (currently, backers have pledged almost $24,000), but their project captures just how strongly many readers feel about the show’s new direction. For all the complaints from hardcore fans, Benioff and Weiss are working with admirable intent this year, and they’re wise to point Game of Thrones toward an ending. Dorne may be an intriguing location in the books, but it never worked for the show, so it had to go. Characters like Stannis, Barristan, Roose Bolton, and others were compelling figures who weren’t indispensable to the show’s outcome, so it’s no surprise they were all killed off in typically bloody HBO fashion. Martin, on the other hand, may never even finish his grand opus. When he began writing A Song of Ice and Fire in 1991, it was planned as three books. The fourth book turned into a volume of unpublishable length and was split into two, taking over a decade to be released. Martin still swears there are only two more entries left in the series. His plot meanderings across his fictional continents may frustrate some readers, but the approach is also why so many were drawn to the detailed world he created in the first place. For fans dissatisfied with the show’s pared-down move toward an endgame, there’ll be no shortage of richness in the books to come—as long as they don’t mind waiting several more years.

S

pring has finally come to our neck of the woods, and we're beginning to take the tiny shoots from our mini-greenhouse in our basement out into the world. I want my daughters to know where their food comes from, but growing a kid-friendly garden means more than just planting kid-friendly plants. If you want to get kids to actually eat their veggies, it helps if you get them invested in the process and care of the garden. If your kids see the backyard vegetable garden as "theirs," they are far more likely to embrace the products: happily eating radishes and arugula that they've grown on their own. Here are six tips -- tested in our home -- to get your kids to embrace gardening and become active agents in creating their own food. 1. Get dirty Forget the image of white-frocked children basking in a pristine flower bed; that image gets in the way of real gardening. Get your kids dirty as fast as possible. Ask them to dig with hand trowels, sticks or bare fingers, and they will leap at the opportunity. When watering, "accidentally" drench them with a good hosing. They'll squeal, then beg for more -- and watering is no longer a chore but a family frolic. Make mud and get them in it. Over-plant in anticipation of grubby little fingers pulling out the extraneous shoots. A garden shouldn't be too precious. Good gardening demands some filth, and when kids realize this, they embrace it. 2. Get gross Kids love gross, and a garden has it in spades. Ask your kids to find worms, then take the opportunity to discuss their impact on the soil. If your garden doesn't have enough worms, go buy them and let the kids play with their new "pets" while you're putting them into the garden. If you want to step it up a notch, create a vermiculture bin and let your kids be in charge of the worm farm. Look for beneficial insects such as ladybug larvae and lacewings. Explain that the reason you wash food that

comes from the garden comes down to two words: bird poop. Some kids may react negatively to grossness, but that's part of the charm. Gross things are both attractive and repulsive to young ones, and finding that fine line where attraction and repulsion equal each other out keeps the kids coming back to the garden. 3. Get creative Encourage your kids to rename the plants in the garden. Our girls have dubbed our sage bush as "Hairy Bigfoot Plant." That name has made the humble herb extremely attractive to our girls and to the neighbor kids -- especially after we cut out pieces from a milk jug and made markers for our newly named plants. In fact, our two girls and the neighbor boy run to this plant every morning as they walk to school and actually eat a leaf of Hairy Bigfoot Plant. Without that name, I suspect elementary school kids would not be eating raw sage leaves every morning on the way to school. Have your kids play The Name Game, and they are suddenly personally invested in growing and eating mummy peas (snap peas) and bloody spice balls (radishes).

ate an easily portable garden set for each child. You can buy them ready-made at the nursery or dollar store … but where's the fun in that? Ask your kids to choose cheap tools for themselves, or gather the tools you already have and put them in specific kits. We turned milk jugs into garden kits, but a tote bag or plastic bucket works just as well. Add more than just a trowel rake and gloves. Put in a magnifying glass, eyedroppers, specimen jars and other "scientific" tools to deploy in the garden. When it's time to do some weeding, tell your kids to grab their kits and you suddenly have an eager workforce.

5. Get experimental Make your garden a laboratory, not a display. Ask your kids to experiment with the dirt, the compost, the layout and the results of your planting. Turn gardening into a science experiment. When the plants are coming up, try taste experiments -- is this bitter? Sour? Sweet? This type of hands-on discovery helps kids understand that "good" doesn't always mean "familiar" -so that when your crop is ready for the kitchen, your kids will beg to try to results. This may require you to set aside a part of your garden to be devoted to 4. Get a kit Kids love kits, so cre- the kids' experiments (so

that you don't ruin your entire crop) but their creative/destructive explorations will personalize your garden… and its results. 6. Get dramatic Learn a lesson from molecular gastronomy: Presentation and entertainment are part of the full experience of food. When it was time to thin the new shoots of butter crunch lettuce and arugula, we had our girls wash the tiny shoots and arrange them attractively on a platter with small chunks of string cheese and a drizzle of olive oil and lemon juice. A garden chore suddenly becomes an art project, then a dish of Farm-To-Table MicroGreens. In the garden itself, use the "experimental" area for play as well as work: Set up scenes, fairy gardens or Lego cities beneath the plants. The "forest" of carrots grows more lush around the tiny family that lives beneath it … then Godzilla descends at harvest time, pulling the trees by the roots as the dolls run and scream in horror. The garden becomes a playground, and the plate becomes a stage, turning the concept of "playing with your food" into a deeper understanding of the earth, growing plants and the process of creating and eating food.

A row of beans

ho else knows the joy of planting bean seeds and watching them sprout and grow in just a few weeks? The storyteller chose such an appropriate seed when he lets Jack exchange his cows for magic beans. The next morning when Jack and his mother look out the window, the beans have grown unbelievably until they are touching the sky above, and leading to the enchanted sphere where the rich and wicked giant lives with his uncharacteristically kind wife. I have had the joy of planting a row of beans and have experienced something close to the wondrous joy Jack must have felt on seeing the rapid growth of his seeds. A week after they were sown, my bean seeds sprouted happy heads and began to grow. The rains came just in time, even though a tad erratic. My beans have grown and grown until some of them are taller than their bamboo supports. Their tendrils still continue to thrust skyward. They have blossomed in the sun and rain. They have survived the wind in April that bent them every which way. And now we are waiting for bean pods to appear and be certified as food. A backward journey takes me back to the day I bought them from a woman of Dihoma sell-

ing bananas and bean-seeds by the wayside. It was morning and school children were scurrying off to school. But the bean-seed seller and I were in no hurry. A short exchange turned into a longish conversation and she disclosed that she was worried about her son who was not doing too well. Jobless and drifting, he had

befriended the bottle once too many. There on that busy street, we bowed our heads and joined our prayer thoughts together for the bean plant in her household gone awry. Her wares were meager: country ginger, papaya and cucumber seeds in addition. How could she possibly feed a family from the sales of such? A few days later I looked for her in the same spot where she claimed that she always plied her business, but the spot was vacant. She was not there the next day either nor the next. I have sometimes wondered how she is, and how the errant son is. Why did she no longer come to town? Had she run out of bean seeds? Little questions like

A realization It is only now I realise, You had always treated me as an ‘equal’. Infact we were all treated equallyThe maid, the driver and all your subordinates. I will not include the dog I realise he was treated better. IMPOSSIBILITIES Stubborn that I am I Hung on to you, hoping against hope. But now I realise somethings are beyond hope and some people are just never meant to be. WITH NO MALICE You will think of me and miss me. And I? I will write of us. You will inspire me and despair at the power of my pen. (The writer is a Govt. servant who writes poetry as a hobby. She is inspired by life and relationships in general)

these niggle my mind. Did they have enough to eat? Did they have a row of beans like mine or had she sold all her bean seeds and left none for herself? The unfairness of it strikes me that our local traders have nowhere to sit and sell their vegetables. The pavements are their sales counters. They sit from

morning till evening trying to sell a bunch of bananas or some home grown vegetables. Yet even as they sit there beside their vegetables, the men from the Municipality would appear like the big, bad giant from Jack’s story and chase them off. It’s a modern fairytale with a bad ending. Is it going to be so hard to provide them their own space where they can sit without being accosted by the long arm of the law every now and then? How is it that the non-local traders sit in the best places in the vegetable markets while there is no place for our local women? Doesn’t that ever strike the authorities as not right at all? We could think of a Naga Ima market for our local women trad-

ers where they can earn for their families without fear of the law chasing them out. They deserve all the support we can give. Our economy can improve as we improve the lot of the local women traders. The examples of communities like Longleng and Tuensang are beautiful. In the last twenty years, these communities concentrated on empowering their women by setting up self-help groups for them. The Longleng women received loans to buy piglets. They also worked together to open their own granary which sold grain at cheap rates to villagers during the lean months. Consequently the changes in their communities became very visible as a result of the empowerment the women had received. In Longleng they started a little candle making factory. Their home-made candles had a much longer life than the store bought candles. The common granary they started has served them well as villagers do not have to go broke buying hoarded grain at high rates from unscrupulous sellers. They received maximum support from the church. Kohima women traders badly need this kind of support from us. If we put our heads together, a Naga Ima market can be begun and it can thrive. It would be the best way to wish them a truly meaningful Mothers’ Day. Come over and let’s talk.

Frequent social media use may lead to eating disorder Eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, binge eating disorder and other clinical and mental health issues

E

xcess use of social media such as Facebook, Instagram or YouTube may lead to disordered eating and body image concerns among young adults, suggests new research. Eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, binge eating disorder and other clinical and mental health issues where people have a distorted body image and disordered eating. "We've long known that exposure to traditional forms of media, such as fashion magazines and television, is associated with the de-

velopment of disordered eating and body image concerns, likely due to the positive portrayal of 'thin' models and celebrities," said lead author Jaime Sidani from University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in the US. "Social media combines many of the visual aspects of traditional media with the opportunity for social media users to interact and propagate stereotypes that can lead to eating and body image concerns," Sidani noted. The results were published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The researchers sampled 1,765 US adults, aged 19-32 years, using questionnaires to determine social media use. The questionnaires asked about the 11 most popular social media

platforms at the time -Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Google Plus, Instagram, Snapchat, Reddit, Tumblr, Pinterest, Vine and LinkedIn. They cross-referenced those results with the results of another questionnaire that used established screening tools to assess eating disorder risk. The researchers found that the participants who spent the most time on social media throughout the day had 2.2 times the risk of reporting eating and body image concerns, compared to their peers who spent less time on social media. And participants who reported most frequently checking social media throughout the week had 2.6 times the risk, compared with those who checked least frequently. Source: IANS

Education hasn’t diminished India’s preference for boys Tanay Sukumar

oung graduate mothers gave birth to 899 girls per 1,000 boys, lower than the national average of 943, according to an IndiaSpend analysis of Census data. Higher education levels have helped in better family planning, but they do not eliminate the preference for boys, the analysis reveals. The reason, experts said, could be that the educated are more likely to afford sex-selective abortions to kill chances of giving birth to girls. Sex-selective abortion was outlawed by India in 1994. The Census 2011 data for fertility of women based on education levels also show that educated mothers gave birth to fewer children, IndiaSpend reported. Urbanisation and better education appear to correlate with a worsening sex ratio (number of females per 1,000 males). The sex ratio of children ever-born (that is, including children who died at birth or later) to all women was 895 in rural areas but 878 in urban areas. Preference for sons is no lesser among the educated, according to Tulsi Patel, Delhi University professor and editor of the 2007 book Sex-selective Abortion in India. “With better control over fertility and reproductive outcomes, also comes the conviction of dispensability of daughters,” she said. The one positive trend

On govt schools’ 0% result Thungdi Oungh Chang: We want Education Department to clarify regarding the 30 Government High Schools 0% results. 1) Who is responsible for the shameful and disastrous results? 2) Did the Government appoint teaching staffs as required in the respective High schools? 3) If appointed, are the teaching staff attending the school regularly? 4) Is it counter reactions by the teaching staff for not paying their salaries? 5) If teaching staffs are appointed, attending the school regularly and salaries are paid, are the students themselves responsible for their failures? Let us all pressurize the state government to set up #independent_enquiry_commission to find out the truth. Note: If any students happen to be from the 0% results Government High Schools, I want them to speak up so that the public are enlightened of the facts. Renponi K Naga: Teachers keeping proxy are to be blamed but the government's inefficiency to pay salaries, build good infrastructures, lack of text books, inadequate teaching staffs, owing to RTE etc are collective reasons. Unless we do that we can never progress and in the end it is Nagaland and the Nagas that are being drained. The performances of the students are known by the teachers from the very first lesson that teachers teach. It is sheer negligence and insincerity of the teachers in failing to diagnose the problem in an important stage as Class 10. Meanwhile, with No Detention Policy many students were just promoted for the sake of promotion in their middle school time and when the foundation is weak... it can never have good result. Some students are very dull and attendance, home study, study materials are less. This creates zero interest and great discouraging factor for them. Meanwhile, Government always gives out textbooks only in March, April every time and that also never reaching all the enrollments in class. Teachers without salaries for months and months can never teach with 100% dedication and interest. Village councils and student bodies should also see that Proxy teachers are kicked out and those teachers who keep proxy should be punished as per service rule. Social media has taken away study hours of children. Nagamese used in Government schools handicap the Government schools’ children from reading and writing. Comprehension skills is zero and they find it suicide task to understand the lessons and memorize, forget about understanding the lessons. Pithongo Shitio Pits: Comparing to other Northeast states in India, Nagaland has the worst pass percentage and the worst facilities, Infrastructure, management plus the lack of teachers posted in Government Schools. It is the responsibility of the Department of Education as well the as the concerned state government for the full failure of proper establishment of Government Schools. The Village Councils & Village Education Committee are also equally to be blamed for not completely discharging the duties that needs to be maintained lacking failure in funding through various ways and means received through the state government. The concerned locality of Students' Union can play a major role in tackling this issue without any backdoor policy behind for the upliftment and welfare of the Students'. The bitter truth about the Government Schools in Nagaland. Thaam Chuba Thai: Most of the students in rural areas come from economically weak families, so it would be a blessing if some sincere kindhearted educated people stationed in those areas could give these students free tuitions especially in maths and science subjects. Some students are plain lazy and disobedient to the teachers, in these cases student union leaders could help out by checking and giving stern warnings to them because some students especially in rural areas, are older than their teachers. Parents should also help by ensuring their grown up children are regular in attending classes. Everything is interconnected and all of us have to share responsibility for this. ith the market booming with international brands like Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Michael Kors, there are a lot of fakes which are selling like hot cake too. But with a little care, you can escape getting cheated. According to Anvita Mehra, luxury expert and founder of Confidential Couture -- an online portal for buying and selling pre-owned designer accessories -- it is easy to spot the fakes. Here's how: * Louis Vuitton (LV): It is extremely easy to judge a fake LV from its logo itself. LV uses genuine leather and one piece of leather is wrapped around

from the front to back, so the backside has upside down logos. Any piece with a separate piece on the bottom will have the LV’s right-side up on both sides. The brand is very particular about the number of stitches as the same will be similar on all Louis Vuitton bags present on Earth. The hardware is heavy and not hollow as it is crafted in brass, shiny golden brass and shiny silvery metal. * Gucci: The brand's hardware is heavy and well cast and is engraved with the company logo. Zippers are made of either metal or plastic, with the company logo or YKK. The stitching is straight, neat and even and the trimmings are made from high quality leather and not

polyurethane. Gucci products always have a serial number at the back of the interior label. The embossed Gucci logo should be clean and crisp, with “made in Italy” marked below and should be uniform on all the zips. * Michael Kors: Michael Kors’ logo in full or MK is on the lining of the bag and in some cases on the interior of the handbag too. The font along with the space between the logos will be same on the lining and on the exterior of the bag. The hardware is of solid metal and will not flake or chip. Some pieces are engraved with clean and a high quality finish. The stitching is straight, neat, even and clean.

is that younger women (between the ages of 20 and 34) reported a better sex ratio than women in older age groups. Mothers between 20 and 34 gave birth to 927 girls per 1,000 boys, whereas the average for all women was 890. This indicates that although younger mothers are less likely to prefer male children than before, education and urbanisation do not appear to be helping. “Discrimination against girls, selective female foeticide, and low sex ratio are more common among the educated and the prosperous part of the society throughout India,” said this study by two Leiden University researchers

Kamlesh Madan and Martijn Breuning. The study also noted that when abortion was legalised in 1971, it was “used extensively in urban areas for sex-selective abortions”. Also, the equipment, being expensive, was “available mostly to the affluent and the wellinformed part of the population in the cities”. It seems the trend has not changed even today with lesser costs and higher incomes. Another 2011 study, published in The Lancet, pointed out that there was decline in sex ratio for a second-born child if the first-born was a girl. “Declines were much greater in mothers with 10 or

more years of education than in mothers with no education, and in wealthier households compared with poorer households.” “Selective abortion of girls, especially for pregnancies after a first-born girl, has increased substantially in India,” the study concluded. While the sex ratio dipped for more educated mothers across India, the opposite was observed in Kerala, the state with the best sex ratio (1,084). Illiterate women in Kerala (between the ages of 20 and 34) gave birth to 940 girls per 1,000 boys, and this went up with education: 950-960 girls for more educated women, going up to 971 girls for graduates and above.

Modi reforms flicker in rural India, other challenges remain

NEW DELHI, MAY 13 (REUTERS): For Indian farmer Sompal Singh, the light bulb that flickers outside his mud hut home is a symbol of progress: the first time electricity from the grid has reached his remote village since independence in 1947. It is also a big deal for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has promised to provide electricity to every village before the end of 2018 and is trying to woo the huge rural population ahead of a key election in Uttar Pradesh state next year. "The (electricity) supply is erratic but we are happy that there has been a start," said Singh, a 37-year-old father of three, who employs a bullock to work the fields in Rampara Kisana, six hours' drive east of New Delhi. "We feel we have not been forgotten." As Modi approaches the halfway point of his five-year tenure, the leader of the world's biggest democracy has not had it easy. Key economic reforms are stalled, his "Make in India" push to turn the country into a manufacturing powerhouse has floundered and sizeable minority groups blame him and his party for pushing a Hindu nationalist agenda at their expense. Yet his government has made progress elsewhere, most notably in the power sector where change is reaching distressed rural communities in Uttar Pradesh who will go a long way to deciding the outcome of the 2017 ballot. It was the prospect of tangible change that voters chose in 2014, propelling Modi to a landslide election victory won on the bold promise that "the good days are coming" for 1.3 billion people and by tapping dreams of a more modern India.

While many promises remain unrealized, power reforms and the creation of tens of millions of new bank accounts have helped Modi maintain his popularity. In a February poll for India Today magazine, 40 percent of respondents chose him as the best candidate to be next prime minister, more than any other politician. Modi is personally stepping up pressure on ministers and bureaucrats to deliver results on everything from financial inclusion to infrastructure and electricity to jobs. One senior government source said Modi warned individual ministers this month that he was personally monitoring the performance of each ministry to shake them into action, as his impatience with underperformance grows. He is also expected to unveil a reshuffle of ministers within weeks, and underperformers could lose their jobs. Underlining the scale of his ambition, Modi has told power officials he wants to announce that every village has been electrified at his next federal budget in early 2017, 18 months ahead of the original target, a senior official told Reuters. That would allow him to tell voters he had beaten his own target on a flagship policy. "This government's job is to focus its energies on development, to take it (electricity) to every home, not like the erstwhile years where if the power reached ... a few homes in the village the government thought the work was over," Power Minister Piyush Goyal said in a recent interview. The prime minister's office declined to comment for this article.

Journalist shot dead in Jharkhand CHATRA, MAY 13 (PTI): A journalist was shot dead by unidentified people at Dewaria in this district, police said here today. Akhilesh Pratap Singh (35), who worked for a news channel, was gunned down near panchayat secretariat of the village last night, a police official said, adding that a bandh was observed in Chatra town in protest against the killing. Chief Minister Raghubar Das condemned the incident and asked Director General of Police D K Pandey to arrest the culprits at the earliest. A delegation of local journalists met Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar and Superintendent of Police Anjani Kumar Jha and demanded adequate compensation to the family of the victim.

UPS AND DOWNS Modi, 65, has plenty to boast about; economic growth outstrips China's, foreign direct investment grew by a quarter in the 2015 financial year over the previous year and inflation has nearly halved since 2013. Still, recent state election defeats punctured his aura of invincibility, and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has seen ratings slip. The India Today poll showed a BJPled coalition would win 286 parliamentary seats if there had been an election in February from 336 in 2014. Key economic reforms on land and tax remain blocked in parliament, where the opposition controls the upper chamber, and two consecutive droughts hit rural India hard. The government must also find employment for around a million people joining the workforce every month, another major preoccupation for Modi and his team. At a cabinet meeting

four of them opposition strongholds, are due on May 19. Of those, the BJP has set its sights on winning only the northeastern state of Assam. But it is Uttar Pradesh, India's biggest electoral prize, that Modi must win in a state poll next year to sustain his hope of one day gaining full control of parliament and a second term in 2019. That may explain why the rate of electrification is highest in the state, home to 200 million people including farmer Singh. Under an $11.4 billion scheme, more than 7,000 villages across the country were electrified in the 2015/16 financial year, the most since 2011/12, data from state-run Rural Electrification Corp show. That leaves 10,500 still unconnected, and is only a small percentage of India's 600,000 villages. Nor does an electrified village mean everyone living there has power. But reaching people in some of the poorest, most remote areas blunts criticism that Modi has put the rising middle class before rural communities. A new website monitors site visits to every village to assess progress, and releases photographs of incomplete work with the names and phone numbers of the engineers in charge. Power reforms also aim to end blackouts that regularly affect even the biggest cities, and to that end India has boosted coal output and cut the peak power deficit to 1.7 percent in March from 5.4 percent in mid-2014. The government has also won pledges of billions of dollars in funding for a push into solar energy and agreed a financial restructuring packUPPING THE ANTE Results in five regional elections, age for indebted utilities. earlier this year, Modi assessed progress on some key infrastructure projects and asked ministers to focus on those that would sustain the most jobs, a close aide to Modi said. At the meeting, Modi gave the example of how kings would embark on large-scale construction projects to deal with drought and unemployment in times of crisis. "Numerous new projects will have to be launched and creative ideas will have to be implemented, but we are yet to crack the code," the aide said. T h e BJ P has also been accused of undermining India's traditions of religious tolerance by appealing to the Hindu majority, a shift that worries the Muslim population estimated at around 170 million people. "If growth doesn't pick up, if job creation doesn't pick up, that restlessness, that negative energy will manifest (itself) in social tensions," said Ajit Ranade, chief economist at industrial giant Aditya Birla Group. "The stakes are huge."

Still, almost one in four Indians lives without electricity, long outages remain the norm and access to power depends on people's ability to afford it. POWER COMES AT A PRICE In Rampara Kisana, one of the last settlements before the road vanishes into the floodplain of a Ganges tributary, Singh was the first farmer to buy a television after power arrived in March. Farmers and their wives brandish passbooks for their first bank accounts, while children talk excitedly of promises to build underground cables bringing broadband. Yet power supply remains erratic, and many smaller settlements in the area are left out. In Patrampur village, 120 km southeast of the capital, residents said engineers arrived earlier this year to fix power cables that had been broken for more than a decade. Even then, it is often an unaffordable luxury. Villagers said the cost of a connection was between 1,500 and 2,000 rupees ($23 to $30), and several hundred rupees a month after that for electricity. Many people in Rampara Kisana and Patrampur are subsistence farmers, and do not know exactly how much they earn. But government data show that in Uttar Pradesh, the average monthly per capita income is 3,400 rupees. Samay Pal Singh, a maize farmer in Patrampur, said he could not afford the 1,800 rupees for a power connection, because of debts accrued in paying for his daughter-in-law's medical costs. "I feel bad about it. Everybody has electricity, but I have limited funds and no one is helping." Inside his room, a light fitting, with no bulb, dangled from the wall.

of benchmark qualification Newmai News Network Imphal | May 13

All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) has urged the Manipur Education Minister for exemption of DIET, any diploma, B ED, TET as essential qualification for recruitment of teachers by the Directorate of Education (S) under SSA and RMSA. While lauding the recruitment drive of teachers by the Directorate of Education (s) under SSA and RMSA, the union said it is perturbed to find the essential qualifications for primary, upper primary and graduate teachers with a benchmark qualification with various diploma courses, TET and B Ed as the qualifying criteria at par with the rest of India. The union in a representation, jointly signed by its president Joseph Hmar and general secretary Vareiyo Shatsang, submitted to the Education Minister said it is conversant with the scenario of educational system in Manipur and fully knowing the setback in application. ATSUM has been pressurising the GoM for establishment of B Ed centres in the entire hill districts of Manipur to cater to the needs of teaching faculties from primary to graduate level but nothing tangible has materialised al-

though assurances have been made to the agitating union. DIET centres in the hill areas are meant only for untrained in service employed under ADCs and Education(s). As such, making DIET/B Ed/diploma in education is neither applicable nor correspond to the existing educational system in Manipur for the simple reason that the Manipur state doesn’t advocate establishment of educational institutions for acquiring professional courses, diploma etc. to meet the needs of the tribals, the union said. “As such, making such diploma or B Ed degrees as the requisite qualification for recruitment of teachers is a design to exploit the tribals who are not privileged to avail the facility of being trained except for lucky few town dwellers,” the representation to the Education Minister said. TET as a requisite qualification is acceptable but with few examinations conducted so far till 2014, upcoming students who are entering into such profession have been deprived, the union insisted. Further, the union urged that the back logs of ST posts in Education Department be ascertained “in black and white” before the commencement of the recruitment process.

camp, six Tripura militants surrender

AgARTALA, MAY 13 (IANS): Six guerrillas of National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT), who fled from their Bangladeshi hideout, have surrendered to the police, officials said here on Friday. The guerrillas were led by their self-styled Second Lieutenant Gantha Charan Rupini, 39, and their surrender took place on Thursday night, Tripura police spokesman Uttam Kumar Bhowmik said. Aged between 34 and 39, the militants told the police they recently fled from the NLFT camps at Chittagong Hill Tracts in southeast Bangladesh. According to them, more NLFT cadres from Bangladesh were likely to surrender, Bhowmik said. Over the past one month, 22 NLFT rebels with a huge quantity of arms and ammunition have surrendered to the Tripura police after escaping from their hideout in Bangladesh. NLFT cadres and All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) militants undergo arms training in hideouts in Bangladesh which shares an 856-km border with Tripura. Banned in 1997 by the union home ministry, the two outfits advocate secession of Tripura from India. ATTF, however, has become almost defunct due to the surrender of most of its cadres. A senior police official, citing intelligence reports, said that Bangladesh Army and security forces in separate raids have recently busted two different camps of NLFT and National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah faction) in mountainous Chittagong Hill Tracts.

New Myanmar govt proposes curbs on protests YANGON, MAY 13 (ReuteRs): Myanmar democracy champion Aung San Suu Kyi is facing criticism from rights groups and student activists who say her ruling party is planning to retain restrictions on free speech once wielded against it by the country’s former junta. Since taking power in April, former political prisoner Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) has released scores of detainees and is making a big push to revise some of the most repressive measures from the long years of military rule. But its new version of the law governing public demonstrations has prompted alarm since the proposals were submitted to parliament last week. The draft bill would punish protesters for spreading “wrong” information and make straying away from pre-registered chants an offence. It bars non-citizens - a category that includes the largely stateless Muslim Rohingya minority - from protesting and lists criminal penalties for “disturbing” or “annoying” people. The NLD says the new bill would introduce substantial changes to the military era legislation and was aimed at protecting peaceful protesters rather than penalizing them. But worries over the proposed Peaceful Assembly Law are compounded by concerns over the gov-

ernment’s recent request to the U.S. ambassador to refrain from using the term “Rohingya” and Suu Kyi’s refusal to speak out in support of a community that faces continuing persecution in Myanmar. The issue is being closely watched by Suu Kyi’s supporters in the West. The NLD faces skyhigh expectations at home and abroad, but the Nobel peace prize winner’s autocratic decision-making style makes the government’s intentions hard to read. “We are concerned that the NLD is rushing this,” said David Mathie-

son, a senior researcher at the Human Rights Watch based in Yangon. “The bill should guarantee the right to protest, and there’s no reason why it should include penalties against protesters,” said Mathieson. He said there were other laws, like the penal code, that regulated potential violations by the protesters and that in its current form the bill gave the authorities latitude to crack down on peaceful demonstrators. These concerns emerge just as the U.S. prepares its annual decision on whether to extend its sanctions on

Myanmar. The newly-appointed U.S. ambassador to the country, Scot Marciel, said this week respect for human rights was an important factor. WATERED DOWN The draft bill does remove or water down some restrictions from existing legislation, such as the article that meant activists could be hit with multiple counts of the same charge - increasing the length of the sentences that could be meted out. It was used last year against students taking part in an unsanctioned march

NAYPYItAW, MAY 13 (ReuteRs): The commander-in-chief of Myanmar’s military said on Friday the army was carrying out its duty under the leadership of the newly elected civilian government of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, aiming to assuage worry over tension between them. Relations between the armed forces and Suu Kyi will define the success of Myanmar’s emergence from decades of isolation and military rule that began when the army seized power in 1962. “We don’t have any reason to reject the leadership of the elected civilian government,” Senior General Min Aung Hlaing at a rare news conference at the military headquarters on the outskirts of the capital, Naypyitaw. The army is the single most powerful institution in the Southeast Asian country. It ruled directly for nearly 50 years then, in 2011, handed over to a government led by retired officers which organised an election in November last year. Suu Kyi’s party won by a landslide after years of opposition to military rule.

on Yangon, some of whom faced more than 50 charges because offences were counted in each township - Myanmar’s smallest administrative unit - they passed through. The draft also cuts the notice required for a demonstration to 48 hours and removes the need to get police consent. Still, students say the changes don’t go far enough. “I think the laws which restrict people’s right to demonstrate for what they want should not exist,” said Zayar Lwin, a leader of one of Myanmar’s largest students’ unions.

He said that as long as there were restrictions in the laws “it would be difficult for us to accept that.” The NLD’s upper house bill committee member Aung Thein, formerly an activist lawyer, rejected that notion. “In the past, they had to seek prior permission at least five days in advance. Now, they have to notify the authorities only two days ahead,” said Aung Thein. There was also a time limit on taking action against the protesters, he said. “Action must be taken within 15 days after the protest. No action can be taken against them after 15 days.”

A government controlled by Suu Kyi took over in April after a transition dominated by discussion over the army-drafted constitution, which bars Suu Kyi from the presidency. The military maintains a significant political role with control of three security ministries. It also holds a quarter of seats in parliament which gives it a veto on changes to the constitution. In the first week of her administration, military lawmakers made clear their opposition to a bill creating a position of state counselor - a powerful advisory role for Suu Kyi - by refusing to participate in a vote on it. But on Friday, Min Aung Hlaing struck a conciliatory tone. “We’re carrying out our duties under the leadership of the government. This is in accord with constitutional provisions,” he said when asked about the relationship between the military and Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD). He said the army reported important matters to President Htin Kyaw, who is a Suu Kyi loyalist hand-picked by her, and, when necessary, to Suu Kyi as well.

But Laura Haigh, of Amnesty International, warned that, if enacted in its current form, the bill could create more prisoners of conscience. “Swift amendment should not come at the price of ensuring full respect and protection of peaceful assembly,” said Haigh. The bill has been tabled in the upper house and lawmakers have until May 16 to submit questions. After the debate in the upper house, the bill will be passed to the lower house. The NLD has a majority in both chambers. The NLD has put some 142 existing

laws - more than a quarter of the total - under the microscope, said the chairman of the lower house bill committee Tun Tun Hein. This revision includes the most draconian laws of the junta era, such as the Law Protecting the State from the Dangers of Subversive Elements and the Emergency Provisions Act. The two laws were the main legal instruments to crack down on dissent and put pro-democracy activists behind bars. “I’m sure they will be revoked completely after discussion in the parliament,” said the NLD’s Tun Tun Hein.

Eat fruits, veggies to lower breast cancer risk Brazil’s Temer calls for unity, confidence for Brazil recovery NeW YORk, MAY 13 (IANs): Women who consume a higher quantity of apples, bananas as well as green vegetables during their teenage years can significantly reduce their risk of developing breast cancer in adulthood, suggests a new study. Fruits and vegetables are important sources of fibre, vitamins, and other biologically active substances that can favourably affect the pathogenesis of breast cancer through several biological mechanisms. The findings, published in the journal BMJ, showed that

high fruit consumption during adolescence was associated with a roughly 25 percent lower risk of breast cancer diagnosed in middle age. Also, greater consumption of apple, banana and grapes during adolescence, as well as oranges and kale during early adulthood was significantly associated with a reduced breast cancer risk. These foods “have well known beneficial effects on health, and efforts should continue to increase intake of both fruit and vegetables at all ages,”

said Maryam Farvid, scientist at Harvard University. However, there was no link between intake of fruit juice in either adolescence or early adulthood and risk of the breast cancer. The team followed 90,000 nurses for over 20 years who reported their diet in early adulthood, of whom half also recalled their usual diet during adolescence. The analyses included consideration of tumour hormone receptor and menopausal status at diagnosis and the relation of specific fruits and vegetables to risk.

Abortion rates drop to historic low: Study LONdON, MAY 13 (IANs): Abortion rates in the developed world have dropped dramatically to a record low during the past 25 years, but only fallen slightly in poorer developing nations, a new global study said. The study conducted by the World Health Organisation and the Guttmacher Institute, a USbased non-profit organisation promoting sexual and reproductive health, also found that restricting or legally banning access to abortions did little to lower the rates, and instead was more likely to force people to turn to clandestine and unsafe measures. The researchers looked at total numbers of each year between 1990 and 1994 and between 2010 and 2014, finding that an average of 56.3 million abortions took place each year worldwide during the

2010-2014 period, a 10-percent increase compared with the 1990-1994 period. During the past 25 years, the study said, the developed countries’ annual abortion rate per 1,000 women of childbearing age (15-44 years old) dropped from 46 to 27. However in poorer countries, the abortion rate remained virtually unchanged, dropping from 39 to 37. Published in The Lancet medical journal, the study highlighted the shortage of access to modern contraception methods in developing countries to reduce unwanted pregnancies. “In developing countries ... family planning services do not seem to be keeping up with the increasing desire for smaller families,” leading researcher Gilda Sedgh said.

BRAsILIA, MAY 13 (ReuteRs): Brazil’s interim President Michel Temer called on his country to rally behind his government of “national salvation,” hours after the Senate voted to suspend and put on trial his leftist predecessor, Dilma Rousseff, for breaking budget laws. Temer, a 75-year-old centrist now moving to steer Latin America’s biggest country toward more market-friendly policies, told Brazilians to have “confidence” they would overcome an ongoing crisis sparked by a deep economic recession, political volatility and a sprawling corruption scandal. “It is urgent we calm the nation and unite Brazil,” he said, after a signing ceremony for his incoming cabinet. “Political parties, leaders, organizations and the Brazilian people will cooperate to pull the country from this grave crisis.” Brazil’s crisis brought a dramatic end to the 13-year rule of the Workers Party, which rode a wave of populist sentiment that swept South America starting around 2000 and enabled a generation of leftist leaders to leverage a boom in the region’s

commodity exports to pursue ambitious and transformative social policies. But like other leftist leaders across the region, Rousseff discovered that the party, after four consecutive terms, overstayed its welcome, especially as commodities prices plummeted and her increasingly unpopular government failed to sustain economic growth. In addition to the downturn, Rousseff, in office since 2011, was hobbled by the corruption scandal and a political opposition determined to oust her. After Rousseff’s suspension, Temer charged his new ministers with enacting business-friendly policies while maintaining the stillpopular social programs that were the hallmark of the Workers Party. In a sign of slimmer times, the cabinet has 23 ministers, a third fewer than Rousseff’s. A constitutional scholar who spent decades in Brazil’s Congress, Temer faces the momentous challenge of hauling the world’s No. 9 economy out of its worst recession since the Great Depression and cutting bloated

public spending. He quickly named respected former central bank governor Henrique Meirelles as his finance minister, with a mandate to overhaul the costly pension system. ROUSSEFF DEFIANT The Senate deliberated for 20 hours before voting 5522 early on Thursday to put Rousseff on trial over charges that she disguised the size of the budget deficit to make the economy look healthier in the runup to her 2014 reelection. Rousseff, 68, was automatically suspended for the duration of the trial, which could be up to six months. Before departing the presidential palace in Brasilia, a defiant Rousseff vowed to fight the charges. In her speech, she reiterated what she has maintained since impeachment proceedings were launched against her last December by the lower house of Congress. She denied any wrongdoing and called the impeachment “fraudulent” and “a coup.” “I may have made mistakes but I did not commit any crime,” she said.

Rousseff ’s mentor, former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who now faces corruption charges, stood behind her and looked on dejectedly. Even as outgoing ministers wept, Rousseff remained stolid. “I never imagined that it would be necessary to fight once again against a coup in this country,” Rousseff said, in a reference to her youth fighting Brazil’s military dictatorship. “This is a tragic hour for our country,” said Rousseff, an economist and former Marxist guerrilla, calling her suspension an effort by conservatives to roll back the social and economic gains made by Brazil’s working class. The Workers Party rose from Brazil’s labor movement in the 1970s and helped topple generals who had held power for two decades ending in 1985. In the heady days of Lula’s presidency, starting in 2003, it helped lift millions of people out of poverty before running into recession and scandal, with many of its leaders now tainted by corruption investigations and criminal convictions.

War on Islamist militants tests Tunisia’s young democracy tuNIs, MAY 13 (ReuteRs): Four days after Islamist militants shot dead 21 tourists in Tunisia’s Bardo museum last year, police rounded up dozens of people suspected of links with the gunmen. One of the men, a labourer, was arrested in his Tunis home. The man, who has denied any connection to the militants, said he was taken to a police detention centre where he was tied to a metal bar and had his head and feet smashed with a pipe. “I told them everything, I even told them I was guilty, just so they would stop,” said the labourer who is on release from prison and spoke to Reuters last month in the company of his attorney. “I thought I didn’t have any other way out.” Several recent cases of police abuse – which the Tunisian government acknowledges still sometimes occurs – underscore the difficult path Tunisia is treading as it tries to both nurture the young democracy it founded after the 2011 revolution and simultaneously fight Islamist militants.

Like France, Belgium and other victims of Islamist bombings and attacks, Tunisia is trying to figure out how to protect people while also protecting their rights. That process is even more difficult in a country where the security services themselves are trying to emerge from a history as abusers. As they take on the Islamists, there is a risk that police abuse will undermine the country’s democratic progress. Rights groups such as Amnesty International and lawyers say cases of abuse at police detention, arbitrary arrests and torture have emerged, undermining the new democracy. “When it comes to the war on terrorism, people say rights are taking a back seat,” said lawyer Anouar Aouled Ali who has defended suspected militants. The government said more needs to be done to stop it. In April, it set up an independent commission to prevent torture and other abuses, an initiative praised by the United Nations. “We know there are cases of torture, but it is not systematic

or a strategy. They are individual cases and we are working on them with civil groups so we can stop this type of abuse,” said Justice Minister Omar Mansour during a visit to a women’s prison on May 8. Many of the inmates there were arrested under terrorism charges and have complained of beatings. Few accuse Tunisia of a return to the worst days of its past when Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali’s security services operated with impunity. Since the 2011 uprising ended his repressive regime, Tunisian civil society, rights groups and a free press have brought the state under scrutiny in a way never imagined under Ben Ali. At the same time, the Islamist threat has many people calling for a harsh crackdown. Militants have struck three times since Bardo, gunning down tourists at a Sousse beach, dispatching a suicide bomber in Tunis and raiding a border town. President Beji Caid Essebsi regularly tells Tunisians they are at war with militants trying

to attack its democracy. The labourer who was beaten by police, who told him he was a suspect because he lived in the same neighbourhood as one of the Bardo gunmen, said such brutality left him fearful. “I always heard about people being tortured, but never thought I would become a victim myself,” he said. WIDER POWERS There is little doubt Tunisia is at risk from militants. More than 4,000 Tunisians have left to fight for Islamist state and other groups in Iraq, Syria and Libya. A state of emergency extended since the Sousse hotel attack in June has given state security wider powers to make arrests and detain suspects. A new anti-terrorism law has also extended the pre-trial detention period to 15-days. Tunisia’s army has made progress in counter-terrorism, in part thanks to training from Western nations such as border protection tactics. But police reforms have lagged behind and the government has brought back former Ben Ali officers to

beef up its intelligence ranks. “They bring knowledge in security in general and counterterrorism,” one senior Tunisian security official told Reuters. “Of course, abuses can happen, but the cases of mistreatment and torture are only individuals. All those cases that are proven, we punish them.” Tunisia’s Human Rights Minister Kamel Jandoubi said his country is trying to get the balance between security and human rights, but acknowledges difficulties. “How do you fight against a group seeking death and do it with the principles of rights? A society has to defend itself,” Jandoubi said. “When we arrest someone, it is always with the principle of human rights.” DEBATE ABOUT ISLAM Activists worry that even isolated security abuses will feed jihadist propaganda, especially because Tunisia is still struggling to fix the youth unemployment and economic malaise that helped trigger the 2011 uprising. It does not help when cases

of abuse are high profile, like the one involving Sofiane Melliti, a former professional footballer with a 2006 World Cup appearance and scores of international matches under his belt. In late March, counterterrorism forces stormed Melliti’s home and threw him in a Tunis jail where he said he was abused verbally, forced to kneel for hours, and accused of links to militants behind the attack on the border town of Ben Guerdane. Five days later he was released without charge. “If this happened to me, someone relatively known, imagine what happens to those who don’t have anyone to help them out,” Melliti told Reuters. “Where are the rights, where are the authorities in all this?” A police spokesman said he could not comment on the case. While some activists fear the counter terrorism campaign will push certain groups towards the militants, others are worried it is reviving a debate about the role of Islam in one of the Arab world’s most secular nations, where liberals

jostle alongside conservative Salafists. After the Bardo attack, some conservative young Tunisians began shaving off their beards and avoiding going to pray to evade police sweeps in poorer Tunis neighbourhoods. Mohammed, a conservative Tunis resident who works at a community centre and as a representative for a European company, said police visit him after every attack to put him on administrative restriction -- limiting his movements -- though he has never been charged or jailed. “Are they really fighting terrorism like this,” he said. Meanwhile, secular politicians such as lawmaker Walid Jalled are calling for a ban in public places on the full-face niqab veils saying militants use them to evade police. “Don’t think that the freedoms and rights we won in the revolution are going to disappear. No Tunisian would accept that,” he said. “But we are in a delicate and sensitive phrase in the war on terror and we have to use what we must to win.”

Kumble re-appointed icc cricket panel chief

Dubai, May 13 (iaNS): The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday re-appointed former India skipper Anil Kumble as its cricket committee chairman while his teammate Rahul Dravid was added as a member of the panel along with Sri Lanka's former skipper Mahela Jayawardene. Kumble, who was appointed the chairman in 2012 was given a three-year extension at the top post, the ICC said in a statement. Meanwhile, Dravid and Jayawardene have been appointed to the committee, adding even more cricketing experience to the list of eminent people already on the committee. Dravid and Jayawardene have played 1,161 international matches between them from 1996 to 2015, and each has been appointed for a three-year term. They will attend their first meeting at Lord’s on May 31 and June 1, three weeks before the ICC annual conference takes place in Edinburgh, Scotland. Dravid has been elected by the current Test captains as current player representatives, replacing former Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara, who has completed his final three-year term. Jayawardene has been appointed as a past player representative

Anil Kumble and takes over from former Australia captain Mark Taylor, who has also completed his final three-year term. Former Australia off-spinner and ex-Chief Executive of Federation of International Cricketers’ Association (FICA), Tim May, has also been elected by the current Test captains as current player representative, replacing Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, who has completed his three-year term. Richard Kettleborough, threetime ICC Umpire of the Year, has been appointed as umpires’ representative in the committee and replaces Steve Davis, who retired last year. ICC general manager cricket, Geoff Allardice,

who also administers the ICC Cricket Committee meeting, said, "I want to thank Mark Taylor, Kumar Sangakkara, Laxman Sivaramakrishnan and Steve Davis for their significant contribution to this committee." "I welcome Rahul Dravid, Mahela Jayawardena, Tim May and Richard Kettleborough, and I am confident that these highly credentialed individuals will carry on the good work of their predecessors to make the sport even more competitive and attractive," he added. placed under curfew, simpson to miss out on leicester celebrations loNDoN, May 13 (reuTerS): Leicester City's Danny Simpson will miss part of the Foxes' title-winning celebrations after a judge imposed a curfew order on the full back, British media reported. The 29-year-old was sentenced to 300 hours of unpaid community service after being convicted of assaulting his ex-girlfriend in May last year. However, his lawyers complained that journalists had found out where he was carrying out his

community service, making it impossible for him to complete his sentence. Simpson appealed to the Manchester magistrates' court for the sentence to be reduced to a fine, and

while district judge Alexandra Simmonds revoked the sentence, she imposed a curfew on the footballer instead, saying a fine would be "no punishment" given his financial position. Simpson must wear an electronic tag and stay indoors at his home in Salford between 2100 GMT and 0500 GMT for the next 21 days, meaning he could miss part of Leicester's title-winning celebrations and their trip to Thailand which starts on Tuesday.

"Watford Football Club can confirm that Quique Sanchez Flores will leave Vicarage Road at the end of the season following the Sunderland game this weekend," read a statement on the club's website. "We would like to thank Quique. He and the team achieved the target set them at the start of the sea-

Watford, from just north of London, started the season well but have struggled recently and have lost three of their last four matches, including a 4-2 defeat at Norwich City on Wednesday. The Hornets are 13th in the Premier League, but have won just two of their

past 11 top-flight games. The club are now looking for their seventh fulltime manager since being taken over by the Pozzo family, who also own Italian club Udinese and Spanish side Granada, in June 2012. The East Midlands club, which announced the award in a tweet on Friday, defied the odds to lift their first top-flight crown having begun the season as 5,000-1 outsiders. The prolific Vardy is also in the race for the golden boot awarded to the league's top scorer, having netted 24 goals so far, one behind his international team mate Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur with one round of matches remaining on Sunday. Leicester visit last season's champions Chelsea, while Spurs travel to relegated Newcastle United. The 29-year-old's Vardy's phenomenal form this season led to him winning his first England cap and he is certain to be included on Monday in Roy Hodgson's squad for next month's European Championship in France.

New Delhi, May 13 (PTi): Former India captain Rahul Dravid has been paid the remaining Rs 1.30 crore of his Rs 2.61 crore fee for coaching the national Under-19 and 'A' team, the BCCI has revealed in its monthly disclosure of payments exceeding Rs 25 lakh. public discourse

christians and social responsibility

W

hen Jesus calls the Christians as salt and light, he was pointing to the fact that the Christians were to act as an agent to bring the Kingdom’s perspective in the realm of this world. The social problems and issues faced by the Christians and the world today have innumerably shot up to its zenith. Although counsellors, educators, social activists, experts in various fields plagued our society, the onslaught of all the social evils seems to evade and erode every aspect of our lives. With regret, one can only philosophise what has gone wrong with us and the world and ponder on those propositions. Living in one of the most Christian populated regions, the society ought to have an ambiance of peaceful atmosphere. But sadly, this small society is infected with the poison of social evils as that of killing, rapes, murder, hatred, bigotry, isms, divisions, corruptions, greed, sexual perversion and immorality which has pervasively disturb the hilly people for decades. The voices of the weak, poor, underprivileged, disabled and less fortunate in towns and villages is no longer heeded as the rich pompously overrides every spheres of our society. The wicked person thrives and the city is weeping. With the advent of Christianity, modernity, in terms of food habits and lifestyles have washed away our old traditional way of life. Yes, our looks and outfits stand at par with the world but not in any other sense. The absenceof morality is becoming more apparent with the changing times. We have adopted westernization but not real Christianization. The Christians are well polished and refined and does not care to get hands dirty by involving outside of the Church premises. O! I love the Church choir and well-neat 45 minutes sermon on Sundays

while the rest of the other days, I’m off to my own world. Now, the worthlessness of religion without mercy is clearly painted in the Bible. There are too many seeker-friendly Churches that crave for wealth in building their kingdom. It’s “my Church, my denomination,” but not Jesus. Too many legalistic opinions are expressed in saying that the church and the state are two different entities. What a blunder to have such a view! I’m not preaching a social gospel here. But the Church is supreme over the society and has a voice to say in matters of societal concerns. It should rebuke and reform the society with its godly and unchanging biblical principles. But no! The Church has lost its authority. Where is she now? She has turned to harlotry for her survival. Never will her husband be glad about such a forlorn pitiful state of his oncebeloved bride. Her voice is too weak to speak out against corruption for she is equally corrupted. She cannot stand with the same strength of her younger days. She is afraid to lose the favour of her companions and so remains callous to the rebuke of her husband. Who is responsible for the mess we are in? Should we blame the Church leaders, politicians, administrators or publics? I pathetically confess with Chesterton, “I am.” Of course, we cannot change others, but we can change ourselves. As the well-known quote sounds, “What we need is not better government, but better men and women in government,” so also changes cannot be expected in our society unless the Christians are totally transformed by God’s power. Charles Colson is so right in making this comment, “If Christianity is true, then it bears on every aspect of life- and we must seek to examine all things temporal in light of the eternal. If we confine our faith to just “spiri-

tual” topics, we begin to think inwardly, talk only to ourselves, and make little impact in the world.” One reason, says he, “that the Christians have separated the “Christian” part of their lives from the everyday, “secular part.” Christian morality and ethics are only played in the Church but not in the world. God is not omniscientfor many Christians, we need eyes of the law to be the watchdogs but sadly, they’re blind too. No wonder, daylight corrupt practices, bribery and other abominable forms has taken over this Christ-bought land. Until Christians realise that the reason for failure is not the government but themselves, will there be a cleansing in any forms! Dr. Nancy Pearcey hit the nail with these words, “The best way to drive out a bad worldview is by offering a good one, and Christians need to move beyond criticizing culture to creating culture. That is the task God originally created humans to do, and in the process of sanctification we are meant to recover that task. Whether we work with our brains or with our hands, whether we are analytical or artistic, whether we work with people or with things, in every calling we are culturecreators, offering up our work as a service to God…” She drove to this one simple thought, “All service is to God.” It is not the Church thing that is required of being sanctified but all that we do for one’s livelihood. Christians are accountable for every task in hand, not a single one is devoid of God’s future verdict. In that light, Christians have to carry out their God-given responsibilities with pure motive and clear conscience. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him (Ephesians 3:17). Vebu Khamo Kohima Bible College.

Teaching respect and conscious living through dance Virieno is a performing artist (dancer, choreographer)

Morung Express News

Akangchila Longchar

“The problem with our society, from Nagaland to Europe, is that Dance is considered as purely entertainment. This isn't true. Entertainment is but only one factor.”

“I

t’s the need of the hour, don’t you think?” asked Virieno Zakiesato (Christina) after the final class of a three-day body awareness workshop which she had mentored. Virieno is a performing artist (dancer, choreographer) who is in Dimapur to conduct the workshop designed to quiet your mind and listen to your body, observe the patterns and habits within your body and mind, and discover your well-being through your body language. For the participants, there was no prior dance experience required. Explaining why she felt the need to conduct a body awareness workshop, the independent dance-maker says that when she comes home to Dimapur, she felt the lack of parks and the basic amenities required for people to take a break from their hectic lifestyles. “Nagas are mountain people and used to lead an active life but right now the situation in Dimapur and other districts is like any other metro with the condition of the roads and traffic. Also, we are so caught up with technology and living sedentary lifestyles. This problem is all over the world, but it’s time for Nagaland to start waking up,” she opined. She elaborates, “We are going away from our bodies. People forget that the body has its own language and intelligence. As a dancer, I want to help educate and create this awareness.

“It’s not an easy profession, having to dance from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm requires a lot of work, dedication and passion”

The workshop on the awareness of the body is about approaching your body as a "thinking body". If the body is aware, you become a conscious being. You want to start developing a sense of wellbeing for yourself and doesn't that start with said awareness of the body? If we start trusting our "body's intelligence", we will be gentler with ourselves and in listening, taking care of our needs, reaffirming and recognising our body habits.” Virieno has been dancing professionally for several years and has performed in India and abroad. Her foundational training is Ballet, Jazz and Contemporary Movement Arts from Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore. She has performed with the Nagaland Folkloric Group for the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo Festival 2014 and was associated with the International Center for Cultural Studies, USA, as a part of the Nagaland Folkloric Group cultural exchange, in 2014. She also had the distinction of opening the National Hornbill dance competition, performing a solo contemporary ballet, 2013. Her passion for dance developed when she was a little girl. Taking it up as a hobby, eventually there was no turning back! However it’s never easy, she says and adds, “I ask questions even now! It’s not an easy profession, having to dance from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm requires a lot of work, dedication and passion. With dance, it’s a

never-ending learning process and always room for improvement.” How supportive were her parents towards her choice of career? She responds, “With every dancer it’s always a challenge to let your family know you want to take up dance as a career but with every step I take, I believe I’m doing justice and when they see I’m hundred per cent committed in what I’m doing, that for them is a reassurance.” She further shares, “The problem with our society, from Nagaland to Europe, is that Dance is considered as purely entertainment. This isn't true. Entertainment is but only one factor. The brain literally has a dance taking place when you're moving and coordinating so many things at once. You need to be musical, kinesthetic, emotional, technical and rational at the same time, which requires a whole lot of coordination of the brain's connectivity. Besides, the brain is also in a constant motion and offers a whole plethora of opportunities to our health. We will want to make that change in our lives that can then contribute towards our health, our well-being, a respect for one another and towards a more conscious living.” This passionate dancer says, “I plan to come back and spread more awareness on what dance as an art form can offer to people. I would like to pass on what I’ve learned from my years of performing and training.”

argis Fakhri is out of country to address her health issues and not because of either a rumoured calling-off of a wedding with Uday Chopra or a decision to quit showbiz, the actress' spokesperson has said. Nargis' sudden disappearance from showbiz -- even the promotions of her film "Azhar" -has left fodder for gossip mongers. There are media reports that Nargis was all set to announce her wedding with actor-producer Uday, but he called it off. Rumours were also rife that following the apparent relationship hitting rock bottom she had a 'nervous breakdown' and left the producers of all her upcoming films in a lurch. However, the "Rockstar" actress' spokesperson has a different story to tell. “Nargis has been extremely overworked working on three films simultaneously over the last year. For someone who is used to doing one film at a time, this was quite a bit for Nargis. “In addition, she has been unwell right through the 'Azhar' promotions with multiple injuries - torn hamstring, anterior knee ligament thinning and mild socket dislocation along with burning of the stomach lining due to lead and arsenic poisoning. "Due to these multiple issues and her overall exhaustion, she had a fever of about 101 degrees

elevision broadcasting company ABC has cancelled longrunning TV show "Castle" after eight seasons. The season finale next week on May 16 will serve as the series ender, reports variety.com. The cancellation comes weeks after news broke that leading lady Stana Katic nor series regular Tamala Jones would return to "Castle", if it were renewed for a ninth season. However, Katic's co-star Nathan Fillion, who

played the title role Rick Castle, recently signed a new deal to return, should the series come back. Premiering mid-season in 2009, “Castle” was created by Andrew Marlowe. The series saw a showrunner shuffle with David Amann taking over for just season 7, and then Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter stepping in for Season 8. Marlowe remained close to the show, after he stepped down as showrunner.

The representative added that it is due to Nargis' deteriorating condition that she had to request Sajid Nadiadwala -- producer of her next film "Housefull 3" -- and "bow out of its promotions to go back home to New York for a month to address all her medical issues and recuperate". In "Azhar", Nargis portrays Mohammad Azharuddin's second wife Sangeeta Bijlani. Next up, she will be seen in "Housefull 3" and "Banjo", and she will be back in action soon. “She has no plans to leave B-Town and will be back to sets to complete the pending patchwork for her film 'Banjo' in the second week of June. "In addition, she has already verbally agreed to two other projects for 2017 before she left and will complete the paperwork when she's back. That coupled with her brand commitments that extend over multiple years, is testament of her being here to stay for good," the spokesperson added. Confirming that Nargis left mid-way through the work for "Housefull 3" due to her health, Nadiadwala said: "Our priority is Nargis's health. We do hope that she recuperates fast and can be there around the release of the film as she is an integral part of 'Housefull 3' team."

Durant the spur as Thunder roll San Antonio in NBA playoffs

C M Y K

Los angeLes, May 13 (aFP): Kevin Durant scored 37 points as the Oklahoma City Thunder completed a 4-2 series victory over the San Antonio Spurs to advance to a Western Conference finals showdown with the Golden State Warriors. He left the game to a standing ovation on Thursday, after a superb personal contribution that also included nine rebounds and two assists. "We're not done yet," Durant said. "We have to keep improving. Keep getting better and get ready for the next series." The host Thunder punched their ticket to their fourth Western Conference finals in six years with a 113-99 victory in front of a crowd of 18,200 at Chesapeake Energy Arena. The finals will be a chance for Oklahoma City to avenge their regularseason record against the Warriors, where they lost all three games. San Antonio, NBA finals champions as recently as 2014, were always struggling against a powerful Thunder team led by Durant and Russell Westbrook, who finished with 28 points. "We just came out with great intensity," said

Westbrook, who had two back-to-back strong performances against the Spurs. "We knew how important this game was." "They been a great team for years," he added. "Tonight was a tough game but we came out with the win." Oklahoma City showed that when either Durant or Westbrook get in a groove, they are tough to beat and when both get going at the same time, it's almost impossible to stop them. "We know what we can do as a

team," Westbrook said. "We are confident in ourselves." The Spurs had trailed by as much as 26 points at one stage in the game, but despite narrowing the gap in the fourth quarter, were always struggling to overhaul the deficit. The Thunder continued their rebounding dominance with a 50-40 advantage. They turned the ball over 12 times, while the Spurs gave the ball away just 10 times. Oklahoma City outshot San Antonio from the floor, 47 percent to 43

percent. "Game one they just outplayed us," Durant said of the Spurs, who won the series opener by 32 points. "Game thee, I think we gave the game away, and we didn't want to do that again. Russell (Westbrook) was huge last game. I think that propelled us into having a good game tonight. The semi-final exit could conceivably mark the end of the road for at least two of San Antonio's long-serving veterans, with

Tim Duncan, 40 and Manu Ginobili, 38, in the twilight of their NBA careers. The evergreen Duncan finished with 19 points, while Kawhi Leonard was the top scorer for the Spurs with 22. Duncan's last game? Duncan turned 40 last month and hasn't made it clear whether he plans to return for another season. He has a player option on his contract. Although Duncan's minutes were reduced this year, he still came up with some turn back the clock moments and played a big role in helping lead the veteran Spurs squad to their best regular season in franchise history. Asked in the Spurs' dressing room what the future holds for him, Duncan said, "I will get to that when I get out of here." In order to reach the finals, Westbrook said, they must beat Golden State on their home court -- which he believes they can accomplish. "Very confident we can beat them," he said. "They are a good team. They are the defending champs. We are going to go there to take care of business and try to move on." "It is time to knuckle down."

Doping bombshells rock WADA meeting as drug crisis deepens

MonTreaL, May 13 (reuTers): World sport is facing an unprecedented drug crisis as yet another in a string of doping bombshells dropped at the World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) foundation board meeting on Thursday, shocking officials. WADA, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and athletes were all left stunned by an explosive New York Times report that detailed widespread doping by Russia at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, including 15 medal winners. It was all part of a dark day for anti-doping crusaders as Russia was once again in the spotlight along with Kenya, after the African nation famous for its middle and long-distance runners was declared non-compliant and now faces a possible Olympic ban. In recent months, WADA has appeared to be losing ground in the war on performance-enhanc-

ing drugs and the agency suffered another setback on Thursday when the New York Times story landed smack in the middle of its board meeting. Alarm bells were ringing as WADA members absorbed details of a Times report that quoted Grigory Rodchenkov, the former head of Russia's drug testing laboratory, recounting dozens of cover-ups and the disposal of tainted samples. Reuters was unable to verify details of the Times report. Even Dick Pound, the Canadian lawyer who helped set up the WADA and served two terms as its president, was left surprised by the scope and sophistication of the cover-up, labelling it the worst he has ever seen. "He (Rodchenkov) knows where all the bodies are buried," Pound told Reuters. "This (Times report) is as bad as we've seen assuming what Rodchenkov says is true and he does

have the knowledge of what was going on. That's pretty bad. "He knew what was going on, it's not just 'she said, he said'." Late last year, an independent commission headed by Pound uncovered evidence of state-sponsored doping in Russia that led to the country being banned from all athletics competition. SCANDAL DEEPENS The scandal deepened on Sunday when whistleblower Vitaly Stepanov claimed in an interview with investigative programme "60 Minutes" that he had taped recordings of Rodchenkov telling him at least four Russian gold medallists in Sochi were using steroids. "It shows the system can be broken rather simply," outgoing WADA director general David Howman told Reuters. "It is something I have worried about for a long time. "It looks on the surface there might have been quite a big

'get away'. The real question is the way this is a systematic program. "That's come out in the report we got from our independent commission. This just confirms it and takes it a couple of steps further which is hugely worrying." With the Rio Olympics just three months away, the IOC must quickly deal with the escalating controversy if it is to restore confidence in the Summer Games in particular and sport in general. Even in the face of mounting evidence, Russian officials continued to deny any wrong doing with sports minister Vitaly Mutko dismissing the New York Times report as nonsense, according to the TASS news agency. "The charges against them are groundless. We will study this article and see how to react," Mutko, who has previously said doping checks at Sochi were under the control of international experts, was quoted as saying.

I came like a king, left like a legend: Zlatan announces departure from PSG

Paris Saint-Germain's Swedish forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic gestures as he laughs during a training session, on September 20, 2013 at the Camp des Loges, the PSG football club training center in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, west of Paris. (AFP Photo)

Paris, May 13 (aFP): Zlatan Ibrahimovic confirmed on Friday that he will leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of this season, but the French champions said the Swedish star will eventually return in a "management" role. "My last game tomorrow at Parc des Princes. I came like a king, left like a legend," wrote Ibrahimovic, ending speculation that he could extend his contract with PSG beyond this season. Ibrahimovic, whose existing deal expires on June 30, will make his final home appearance for the club in their last Ligue 1 game of the season against Nantes on Saturday. However, he will then run out in a PSG shirt one more time when they face Marseille in the French Cup final on May 21 at the Stade de France. "After discussions between Paris Saint-Germain and the agent of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the club and the player have mutually decided not to renew his contract," PSG said. "They have also agreed that once his playing career is over, Ibra will join the management of the club in a position of responsability." In the meantime, Ibrahimovic will make his French swansong as a player when he turns out for Sweden at Euro 2016 in June. There has been widespread speculation about the 34-year-old former Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona and AC Milan star's next destination. He has been linked with a move to the English Premier League, while his agent recently suggested he could return to AC Milan and Major League Soccer is another potential destination. Ibrahimovic, who last weekend was crowned France's player of the year for a record third time, has enjoyed enormous domestic success with PSG since moving to the French capital from Milan in 2012, winning the Ligue 1 title in each of his four seasons. If Paris win the French Cup next week, they will have completed a clean sweep of the domestic honours for the second year running and Ibrahimovic will have won 12

trophies with the club. "I am very proud of the last four years. I have loved every day I have spent here," Ibrahimovic said. "PSG has become a star club internationally and I have played a major part in that transformation. "The time has now come for me to take a different path. "This is not a farewell but simply a goodbye for now. I came here like a king and leave as a legend. But I will come back!" - Record goal-scorer Ibrahimovic scored his 36th league goal of the season in Wednesday's 1-1 draw at Bordeaux, leaving him just one away from equalling Argentine striker Carlos Bianchi's club record of 37 in a topflight campaign, set back in 1978. He has 46 in all competitions and has 152 goals in total as a PSG player in 178 appearances, having overtaken Portuguese great Pauleta as the club's all-time leading scorer back in October. Ibrahimovic has also become the club's all-time leading scorer in the league and in Europe, but he never managed to reproduce his brilliant domestic form in the Champions League. The Swede performed poorly in PSG's quarter-final exit to Manchester City last month, missing a penalty in the 2-2 firstleg draw at the Parc des Princes before Paris went out 3-2 on aggregate. In Paris speculation will now turn to who PSG will sign to replace their talisman. They have in the past been linked with moves for Real Madrid and Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona's Brazil forward Neymar. However, moves for these two players would be extremely complex and costly, and a report in sports daily L'Equipe on Friday indicated that the Qatar-owned club will instead turn their attentions to Antoine Griezmann. The Atletico Madrid striker, who on Thursday was named in France's Euro 2016 squad, would cost in the region of 70 million euros (£55.1m, $79.5m), L'Equipe said.

Wenger undecided on his future LonDon, May 13 (reuTers): Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has not yet decided on his future, with his contract due to expire at the end of next season, the Frenchman said on Friday. He denied any knowledge of British media reports that he would be offered a new deal. The Times said on Friday that the club's American majority shareholder Stan Kroenke had prepared a new two-year deal. "I don't know where the information has come from, you can treat that as an invention," Wenger told a news conference ahead of Sunday's final Premier League game at home to relegated Aston Villa. The experienced Wenger, 66, who joined the north London club in 1996 and has led them to a topfour finish in every full season, indicated he would at least see out the remaining year of his contract. "I am committed with integrity for as long as I am under contract," he said. "I will see where I am personally and where the club stands." Asked if he had decided on his future, he replied: "No". "It was a strange season and we finish disappointed," Wenger said. "We had a chance to win the title and we are frustrated. I agree (I could have done better). I look at myself and what I could have done."
