left unattended by government: Yitachu: bring formula Villagers repair stretch of nH 702D other than ‘bifurcation’ Deliberation held on ANSTA, NSSFOF agitation

Manipur editors to resist NIA demands
Morung Express News
IMPHAL, MAY 28 (IANS): Newspaper editors in Manipur on Saturday decided not to yield to pressure from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) which has demanded they share source of underground press releases and other details which will lead to the location of the computer used by insurgents to emailing these. The NIA demands became stronger in wake of the claim by the Corcom taking responsibility about the ambush of a convoy of 29 Assam Rifles in the border area where six personnel were killed and 7 others wounded by the insurgents. An emergency meeting of the Editors’ Guild Manipur (EGM) was held on Saturday to discuss the letter from the NIA asking the editor of mass circulation vernacular newspaper, The Poknapham and its sister publication, People’s Chronicle, to hand over the copies of publicity materials in connection with the claim for the May 22 ambush. Robindro Sharma, editor of The Poknapham told IANS that the meeting decided to furnish the materials as far as possible but certain sensitive materials including those concerning the editorial sanctity shall never be handed over to the NIA or any authority.
Exactly 1135 men from three villages situated along the National Highway 702D, popularly known as Mokokchung-Mariani Road, volunteered to repair a stretch of the highway today after realizing that the government was not likely to repair the depilated road any time soon. The second busiest highway in Nagaland and the lifeline for at least three major districts: namely Mokokchung, Tuensang and Zunheboto, the Mokokchung-Mariani road has remained unattended with none of the government agencies looking its way. In 2015, NH 702D was handed over to the National Highways ministry by the Border Roads Organization (BRO). While the state National Highways department in the district claims that there are “no work assignment from the government” concerning the said road, the BRO maintains that they no longer are responsible for the road’s maintenance. The three villages Chungtia, Aliba and Kinunger – in 2014 also voluntarily repaired the road. On Saturday, the three villages in the same camaraderie-ship, under the

initiatives of a 15-member “well-wishers committee” came together to repair the road. While those residing in the villages started the day by repairing the road starting from Longjongkong (New Camp), citizens from the villages residing in Mokokchung town started their day from IOC Junction with Mekuli junction as the converging point for the two parties. The volunteers were seen carrying boulders, filling potholes, digging earth and clearing drainages all along the 35-kilometer stretch. Imchawati Kichu, convener of the “well-wishers committee” expressed gratitude to all the volunteers for showing up today. He also thanked the village councils and town unions of the three villages for their all-out cooperation and undertaking. He also thanked the village councils of Khensa and Mekuli for their sup-
port. Several Mokokchung based organizations including the Ao Senden, AKM and MCCI as well as the district administration visited the volunteers and extended monetary contributions. Imchawati also told media persons that earlier in February; they had met the BRO and then the state Highways department requesting them to repair the road, however, expressed regret that their requests were not responded positively. “We therefore decided to repair the road themselves “instead of imposing bandhs,” he maintained. Imchawati also hoped that the other villages situated along the highways would also follow suit and repair the road without waiting for the government to repair it. He also requested the authorities that the “standing order” that prohibits a truck from carrying more than 10 tonnes on this high-
way be strictly implemented. The departments concerned should also at least ensure timely assistance in clearing the landslides that are common during rainy season, he further appealed. In a note of gratitude, the Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce and Industries (MCCI), on behalf of the business community of Mokokchung, Tuensang and Zunheboto conveyed its sincerest appreciation to the three villages for volunteering in repairing 35 kilometers of the all-important Mokokchung-Mariani road starting from IOC Junction to New Camp today. “It is our hope and dream that this exemplary initiative heralds a people’s good roads movement in the region. This road is the lifeline for not just Mokokchung but also of Tuensang and Zunheboto and is of paramount economic importance for these districts,” the press note stated.

Tasang Imchen shared the same sentiment. As a maker specializing in a special kind of craftwork called ‘decoupage,’ Imchen had been excited to be part of the event and to witness the creativity of other fellow Nagas. “This should be a regular event. It is a benefit to the entrepreneurs,” she said. Bambi Kevichusa, designer and owner of ‘Windfall’ summed the significance of the event perfectly, “It’s a big encouragement to us to manufacture more. It’s so beautiful to walk around here, everything is made in Nagaland. I wish we had more events like this.” Bakers like Pastor Bryan, Iliang Haralu, Pito Kiba, Anen Imti

We plan to take this event to Hornbill Festival at Kisama. Meanwhile, as far as the agriculture community is concerned, Zatara Pvt Ltd is also keen to include the farmers’ community thus creating a bigger platform in the Makers Market.” Sundown as the stall owners started to pack up and rolled up their tents, weary but satisfied shoppers stayed back to enjoy the “Rough Road Sessions” an evening of good music and food, before heading home with their bag of goodies with the tags ‘Made in Nagaland.’ More photos on Page 11
A deliberation on the agitation and demand of All Nagaland School Teachers Association (ANSTA) and Nagaland Secondary Schools Field Officers’ Federation (NSSFOF) for bifurcation of Higher Secondary from the Secondary and Elementary education was held on Saturday at de Oriental Grande, Kohima. The discussion was held among representatives from Nagaland School Education Administration Officers Association (NSEAOA); All Nagaland Hindi Teachers’ Union (ANHTU), Nagaland Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan Teachers Association 2013 (NRMSATA), Nagaland Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Teachers’ Association (NSSATA), All Nagaland Physical Education Teachers Association (ANPETA), All Nagaland Graduate Primary Teachers’ Association (ANGPTA) and Nagaland Government Higher Secondary School Employees’ Association (NGHSSEA) in the presence of Yitachu, Minister for School Education & SCERT, FP Solo, Commissioner and Secretary and other officers of the Department of School Education. “No school should stand alone. Just to bifurcate Class 11 and 12 is not possible. If you have another formula, bring it to me,” Yitachu stated while expressing hope that better solution to this approach would be brought in. Discussing on the various complications in the Department of School Education, Yitachu gave a brief background of education provided in the past in Nagaland and its evolvement to the present day. Yitachu said in the past, many of the teachers had passed only elementary or middle school, but were made to teach in schools. However, in the present, the Minister for School Education noted that most of the teachers are graduates. “That is the kind of backgrounds our education system has been brought into. We have to know where our root is,” Yitachu explained. Hoping that ANSTA will suspend their agitation, Yitachu reiterated that bifurcating the two cadres will go against the interest of the students and the educational institutions and it will cost the State exche-
quer dearly. Commissioner and Secretary, School Education FP Solo appealing to the rest of the teachers to give their extra effort in the midst of agitation said, “We must keep our schools running for the sake of the children.” Wonthungo Tsopoe, Additional Director (HoD), School Education said any issue should be discussed thoroughly before taking any action or decision. “Bifurcation cannot take place overnight. We need to analyse. The time is not right,” Tsopoe stated. According to him, for 52 years, the department has taken many steps without proper analysis. “That is why we are in a mess. It has been an accumulated problem that we have to solve one after another,” asserted Tsopoe while urging all the associations to work together to bring improvements and progress in the department. The meeting also highlighted on the neglect of teachers of various categories in the Education department such as the Hindi teachers, Physical Education teachers, Vocational teachers, Primary teachers etc. “Majority of the teachers are primary teachers but in most of our discourses and deliberations we don’t talk about them,” highlightedSolo.Hepointedoutthatprimary teachers are an important segment of the departmentandthesocietybecausetheyarethe mainbuildersofthefoundationofthesociety. “The students are the victims here,” said a representative of ANPETA who expressed the need for the ANSTA and NSSFOF to call off the agitation. A representative of the ANHTU said the issue does not take the voice of Hindi teachers into account. Representatives of ANSTA and NSSFOF who are agitating were not present in the deliberation.

NEDF calls for repeal of AFSPA as a ‘matter of urgency’ Imphal, may 28 (mExN): The North East Dialogue Forum (NEDF) has urged the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, to repeal the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act of 1958 “as a matter of urgency” from the states in North East of the Indian sub-continent. Citing India’s general discourse on reactions to such calls for repeal, the NEDF reminded the country that the 80 countries had supported the repeal of AFSPA at the Universal Periodic Review of India by the United Nations in 2012. “Are these countries anti-national?” questioned a press statement from the NEDF, signed by PBM Basaiwmoit from Meghalaya, Girin Chetia from Assam, Anthony Debbarma from Tripura and U Nabakishore from Manipur.
The AFSPA has been repeatedly recommended repeal by several national and international commissions and organisations but no avail. Militarised schools Children of the region have been facing the brunt as schools continue to be militarised. According to statistics given by the NEDF, army camps are located inside 78 schools, colleges and even inside the University of Manipur. There are many others located within very close distance from schools and colleges. As per the Safe Schools Declaration, an inter-governmental political commitment, that was opened for endorsement by countries at an international conference held in Oslo, Norway, in
2015, countries were given the opportunity to express political support for the protection of students, teachers, and schools during time of armed conflict; the importance of the continuation of education during armed conflict; and the implementation of the Guidelines for Protecting Schools and Universities from Military Use during Armed Conflict. India has not endorsed this declaration till date. Repeal recommendations The NEDF called upon the Prime Minister of India to “respect and implement” the recommendations made by Justice Jeevan Reddy Commission report (2005), Justice Shantosh Hedge Report (2013), Justice Verma Commission report (2013),
Rare ‘Primitive’ orange discovered in Tamenglong Imphal, may 28 (NNN): A rare wild orange species has been found growing in Manipur’s Tamenglong district. The newly discovered endangered citrus fruit is probably the “most primitive” one in the world, a DDK Imphal news report said today. All varieties of oranges found in the world could possibly be from this orange, it added. Earlier, scientists be-
lieved this orange species was found only in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills. It was discovered by chance when a team from Conservation of Nature and Cultivation of Science, Manipur under the Manipur Biodiversity Board visited Dailong village of Tamenglong. The trip was aimed at inspecting the village to declare it as one of the important biodiversity heritage site.
Tamenglong, which is located about 140 km from Manipur capital Imphal, is the centre of oranges of the state. About 80% of oranges produced in the state is from Tamenglong. The district is situated at an altitude of 1,260 m above the sea level. The climate and the soil of the hill district are well suited for the production of oranges using 40% of the total landmass.

Automobile companies budgeting financial support for diesel-ban hit dealers and staff new DeLhi, May 28 (et): Some automobile companies are budgeting financial support to dealers in Delhi and its satellite cities , and are working on diversifying the roles of employees working in the region to lessen the impact on them from the ban on the registration of large diesel vehicles. The National Capital Region used to be the largest market for diesel vehicles until the Supreme Court imposed the ban in December as part of efforts to improve the quality of air. Companies like the local units of Toyota Motor and Mercedes-Benz and homebred Mahindra & Mahindra were hit badly
by the order, as large parts of their popular portfolio of vehicles were strapped with diesel engines displacing 2 litres or more, the ones the court banned. While Mahindra scaled down its engines to escape from the order, companies are also working on other strategies to keep the impact on them and those associated with them to a minimum. “We have decided to support our dealers and have earmarked some cash flow to help them retain employees,” said Shekhar Vishwanathan, vice chairman at Toyota Kirloskar Motors. “We are carefully assessing the situation at our dealerships in the NCR and extending financial
NCR dealerships. Lot of their roles have been diversified, but there has been no cut in jobs “, said Roland Folger, managing director at MercedesBenz India . “We have to wait and see what the next verdict holds for us,” he added. Mercedes also has 10 outlets in the NCR and a total of 83 across 40 cities in the country.. The matter will come up for hearing next in July, when the court resumes after its summer recess. Meanwhile, a recent National Green Tribunal order banning registration of large diesel vehicles in Kerala created further concern among auto makers. The order, though, was stayed by the Kerala High Court
support as per their requirements.” Given the uncertain business environment attrition rates have picked up, Vishwanathan said. Details of the subsistence package, which may include financial assistance for payment of salaries to employees at dealerships, are being worked out on a case-by-case basis. Toyota Kirloskar has 10 outlets in the NCR, which used to contribute 14% to the company’s overall sales in the domestic market. Mercedes-Benz, which is among the worst affected in the luxury car industry, is restructuring roles of employees in the region. “We haven’t cut down on our staff strength in Delhi
on Friday. Since the ban in NCR came into effect on December 16, Toyota Kirloskar has lost around 7% of its annual sales, prompting the auto maker to apply brakes of new model launches and fresh investment. Toyota sold 34,989 vehicles between January and April 2016, a 30% drop from a year earlier. Sales of best-sellers Innova and Fortuner have declined by 29% and 57%, respectively, in the first four months of 2016. “We have decided we will not launch any new models or make fresh investments till there is some stability for doing business,” said Vishwanathan. Delhi-NCR accounted
for around 20% of India sales for Mercedes-Benz. Most of the demand from the region was for diesel variants. With the company now allocating more petrolrun cars to the region, it said supply in other places has taken a hit. According to the company, “extension of the ban has dampened the spirit in the market”. The ban in NCR has resulted in production loss of 11,000 vehicles in the industry until April 30, said Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). According to the society, this has affected about 5,000 jobs. If the ban were across the country, it would have led to a production loss of 1 lakh vehicles by now and affected 47,000 jobs, SIAM has said.

Opportunity to put troubled past behind: 13 lakh worth ganja seized Guv Acharya on ‘Framework Agreement’ Dimapur, may 28 (mExN): P.B. Acharya, Governor of Nagaland & Assam has stated that the “framework agreement” signed between the Government of India and the NSCN (IM) on August 3, 2015 is a “great opportunity to put the troubled past behind us”. He was addressing the 65th Plenary Meeting of North East Council in Shillong on May 26. Mentioning the need to introspect as to how the process of bringing in permanent peace in the region can be facilitated, Acharya urged support for the peace process. He termed the agreement a “momentous development” which deserves to be welcomed by all. “This is the time for all of us to support the peace process for a permanent solution,” he stated. While lauding the NEC for being instrumental in setting the stage and ushering in a new
hope for the development in this region, the Governor cited the lack of facilities in the region. There is an urgent need of air connectivity of DimapurImphal-Agartala-Kolkata/ Guwahati, Acharya stated. Further stating the need to promote industries, trade and commerce, he requested the withdrawal of NEIIPP-2007 which has been kept under suspension since 2014 and suggested pragmatic land use policy be formulated for attracting industries in the region. He thanked the Central Government for setting up a Regional Passport Office in Dimapur and also approving the setting up of veterinary college in Nagaland. With regard to the setting up of a medical college in Kohima, he urged that the process be expedited. Mentioning the seven Indian Reserve Battalions including
one Mahila IR Battalion, Acharya requested the NEC and DoNER Ministry to evolve a strategy to extend infrastructure support to such Battalions. The Governor also urged the NEC to promote the tea and bamboo based-industry. He also requested the NEC to set up Food Park and Solar Park in all the North East States. “For setting up of solar power plants in Nagaland, the financial support provided by MNRE will have to be increased significantly to bring down the cost of solar energy. The viability gap funding may be increased from 30% to 70%,” he stated. Governor Acharya also mentioned the need for Coldstorages – to preserve “organic vegetables and fruits”; and Skill Development – for a constructive dialogue between industry, Trade, commerce, and Universities and Higher Education so
Group of armed men raid house Morung Express News Dimapur | May 28
A house raid by a group of armed men at a house in Aoyimti, Dimapur raised confusion and alarm on the night of May 27. The raid is suspected to have been conducted by security personnel in civvies. The house, bordering the northern perimeter wall of the Dimapur Airport, was occupied by a family of three - two teenaged students and mother. The elder of the two children while recounting the turn of events said that the armed men with faces masked broke through the thatch barricade lining the front entrance of the house. “It was around 10:15 PM and we were getting ready to sleep when we were jolted by loud banging on the doors and unfamiliar voices asking us to open the door,” the son said. Shocked and fearing for their lives they remained in their rooms. When the doors did not open, the raiders broke one of the window panes, pointed guns through the opening while ordering the occupants to open the doors. With guns staring at them, the family finally relented. According to the son, the raiders then went about searching the entire house. “They were about 8-10 people and came in two Maruti Gypsy.” Meanwhile, neighbours in the vicinity alarmed by the commotion came about inquiring. But they also could not be of any help. One of the neighbours said that they were motioned at gunpoint by other members of the raiding team standing guard by the road not to approach the house. As per the neigh-
bour, they were most likely military people. The house search was stopped after about 40 minutes. According to the son, the armed men were overheard conversing among themselves that it “could have been a misinformation.” They eventually left but not before making the two sons of the house to sign papers. The son added that they were forced to put their signatures on “NOC papers”, the contents of which they were not allowed to read. “They did not disclose the purpose of the search or their identity,” he said, while adding they were forcefully handed Rs. 1000 before leaving for repairing the wall damaged. Clueless and equally shocked by the incident all the family could do was file a police complaint. It was added that the police visited the house following the complaint. The police later confirmed receiving a formal complaint about the incident and stated it was in the inquiry stage. They have no intention to protect the lives and properties of the people nor is there any more hope for the present Government to improve.” Therie pointed out that economic and development activities have come to a grinding halt in the state leaving no future prospects for the youth of the state. In this backdrop, change is the only hope, he added.
‘Festival’s a time for thanksgiving and building relations’ Ollo community of Nagaland celebrate Woraang

The Ollo Naga community living in Nagaland celebrated Woraang festival with much fanfare in Dimapur on May 28. The celebration was organised at the Purana Bazaar ‘B’ local ground where CL John, Minister for Rural Development & Rural Employment, Poverty Alleviation was the chief guest. Yumsen Matey, president, India Sports Sangh, State of Arunachal Pradesh and also a former Parliamentary Secretary of Arunachal Pradesh was guest of honour.
The Ollos, like many other Naga tribes are divided by imaginary political boundaries between India and Myanmar. In India, they are native to Tirap and Changlang districts of Arunachal Pradesh and in the Myanmar side of the international boundary bordering the Indian state. Woraang is one of the Ollos' most important annual festivals that celebrate the spirit of thanksgiving and takes place subsequent to the completion of cultivation during April and May. CL John, in his address, called for uphold-
ing the spirit of Woraang which is a time for thanksgiving, building relations, forgiving and making amends. In consonance with the spirit of the festival, any Naga irrespective of the region or tribe should uphold the one Naga spirit and work for the common Naga interest. Stating “forgive and forget should not happen only in church,” he added it should be applied in all sphere of life. According to him, ‘Nagamese’ could act as a great tool for fostering stronger communication among the various Naga
tribes living in India and Myanmar and rather it should be recognised as a language. He further said that it is not appropriate to claim that only Nagas of Nagaland are Nagas. Yu m s e m Matey termed festivals as an opportunity for the younger generation to relive the rich cultural heritage of the forefathers. Maintaining culture as “our uniqueness”, he asserted it should be respected and preserved. He further said that every Naga should support the peace process as “peace” is the weapon to development.
Mopong Circle VCCs affirm resolution on reinstating EAC HQ moN, may 28 (mExN): Village Council Chairmen of Mopong Hongkong (Mopong Circle) in Mon district have criticized the statement of Moka NPF titled ‘NPF 48 Moka A/C issues clarification’ which appeared on May 24 issue. The Moka NPF had responded to a statement of A. Yangkon Konyak, former vice chairman of Adhoc Town Committee Mopong (ATCM), which demanded reinstatement of the EAC Mopong under ADC Tobu. The Mopong EAC HQ has been brought under SDO (C) Angjangyang from Tobu ADC “without the
consultation and consent” of Mopong Hongkong public, according to the statement of the former ATCM vice chairman. A rejoinder issued by seven Village Council Chairmen (VCCs) on behalf of all the VCCs of Mopong Hongkong admitted that the designation of Yangkon should be former vice chairman of ATCM and not as claimed. However, the VCCs asserted, Yangkon’s statement is the voice of the general public and attested the resolution of May 11, 2016 as true and genuine. The resolution says that “all eleven villag-
es including Mopong EAC HQ which fall under the Mopong EAC HQ Centre shall remain under the administration centre of ADC Tobu Sub-Division.” The VCCs further told Moka NPF that Yangkon might be “just a mere public” as it said, but “we are highly acknowledging his voluntary services rendered for the cause of Mopong Hongkong.” “The VCCs led by A. Yangkon seeking for reinstating Mopong EAC Hq under ADC Tobu is the general will of the public irrespective of any political parties in grassroots level,”
the rejoinder stated. The VCCs also questioned the Moka NPF President and General Secretary what other formalities had been observed other than the official formalities/report that was submitted in the final meeting of July 27, 2015, which was convened by EAC Mopong HQ and attended by all the Village Council Chairmen, Mopong Hongkong Students' Union, all presidents of students' unions and KNSK. “The Moka NPF has no right to interfere in any manner in this regard,” it added. Stating that the public of Mopong circle deserve
to be under ADC Tobu, the VCCs expressed confidence that “the Government of the people will surely be the Government for the people.” Therefore, the signatories have asked all responsible citizens and concerned administrative authorities not to be swayed or misguided by such write ups of individuals with vested interest. The rejoinder was appended by Engo Konyak, VCC Yonghong; L Tangang, VCC Kenchenshu; Nyaoba, VCC Yei; PL Wanmei, VCC Yaphang; C Pongchai, VCC Changnyu; Ethang, VCC Yakshu; Moangkhak, VCC Ukha.
‘The smallest of jobs is important to build a nation’ Morung Express News Dimapur | May 28 EAC Chumukedima, Thungbemo Patton unveiling a board displaying the new name of the village on Saturday. (Morung Photo) Morung Express News Dimapur | May 28
Established in 1968 under the name, “Domokhia village,” and recognized by the state government in 1996, the village was officially renamed as “Ekhyo Yan” (Victory Village) on May 5, 2016 and a board displaying the new name was unveiled by EAC Chumukedima, Thun-
gbemo Patton on Saturday. Speaking on the occasion, Thungbemo emphasized on the need for positivity among members of the village to work together towards making a new beginning for the village. “Let us focus on the goodness of others. Let us start praising our elders, neighbours and friends. Let’s start praising each
other,” he urged. Short speeches were delivered by village elder and founding member, N. Odyuo, Secretary, Sericulture Department, CM Tsanglao, and executive member steering committee, NSCN (IM), M. Kikon. The speakers reminisced about the history of the village, major events and struggles faced by the founding members.
“Do not get yourself into thinking that a job is too small. The smallest of jobs is important to build a nation.” This was stated by Ngachan Zimik, Regional Director, Staff Selection Commission, Guwahati. He was speaking as resource person at a Career Guidance cum Felicitation Programme organised by the Tangkhul Hoho Nagaland at Tangkhul Baptist Church,
Diphupar on Saturday. Advocating dignity of labour, Zimik urged the community to do away with the mindset of menial jobs being “below our dignity”. “We don’t like to do menial jobs and yet we are giving away so much money to people who do such works,” he noted. Zimik stressed on the ‘purpose’ of life and encouraged the students to have ambitions and to choose a career according to their interests. “Think about what you want to be-
come in life and work on it,” he advised. “Work hard and be aware,” he urged, stating it is a competitive world today. “Know your strong points and weaknesses.” Zimik made a PowerPoint presentation on SSC jobs that one can avail of and explained the various exams – including the most popular and the ones with most vacancies. He also highlighted career advancement prospects in central government and provided statistics of differ-
ent regions availing Central Government jobs. The other resource person for the day, Joseph Keishing, Commandant, 175 CRPF, Dimapur, advocated discipline to the students. “Plan and build a ladder towards your aim in life. If you have discipline, everything will fall into place,” he advised. Keishing also gave a PowerPoint presentation highlighting the vacancies available in armed forces and urged the young people to get into the lowest avail-
able vacancies saying there will be many opportunities to climb higher “if you are qualified and work hard”. During the felicitation programme, the top 3 students in the NBSE HSLC exam from the community were awarded cash prizes and certificates. Rinchuiwon A Shishak with 82.2% was awarded first prize and given Rs 25000. Rinmi Vashum with 78% was second and received Rs. 15000. Ngashanwon Vashum with 77.4% got third and was awarded Rs. 10000.

Being Special
Unscramble the words I’m not the person I was before I had a Child With Special Needs to name the fruits Melissa Schlemmer

he other day I was reading a post reminding parents not to lose themselves or forget who they were before they became a parent of a child with special needs. The article was telling parents to make time for the things they loved and the friends they laughed with before their world completely changed. I understand the intention of the article, and I truly do get the thought of “losing” yourself. I went to bed thinking of my old self and the person I was before our youngest son came along. Our 2 and a half year old has a rare genetic condition, PMM2CDG. His disorder affects nearly
every cell and body system. He fights for every accomplishment, every milestone. He is still unable to sit unassisted, is “failure to thrive,” doesn’t say a word and has the most magical smile you will ever come across. I thought of the time when I didn’t know medical terminology, have strong connections with other parents of children with rare disorders, friendships with people across the globe and involvement in advocating for children with extraordinary needs. I never met with specialist after specialist, checked blood sugar, set feeding pumps or drove to daily therapy appointments. That was not my old self.

nce, there lived a pack of Wolves in the forest. The Wolves hunted animals in the forest and the nearby village every day, but they did not have a leader. Therefore, one day, the Wolves decided to select a leader among them. Thus, a Wolf was selected as the leader. The leader Wolf lectured others about the deeds they should do, but did not do them himself. One morning, the leader called all the other Wolves and said, “Dear friends! What I am about to say is very important. All of us should be selfless, because it is evil to be greedy. Therefore, I have made a law. My old self was worried about losing 10 pounds, acquiring the latest handbag and making plans for a night out. Don’t get me wrong, a couple of those things are still on my list, but they are nowhere near the top. I am most definitely not who I was before, and I’m not going back. This is the best self I have ever been. Yes. This new self who is exhausted, barely has time to shower and sheds countless tears because life simply isn’t fair. This new self who never gets a full night’s sleep, feels alone most days and prays for little things others take for granted. This new life is a journey that requires a new me.
I lost myself and became someone new. The person I am now is a much better version of me. I am not who I was before I had our son and honestly, thank God I’m not. Thank God I did lose myself. I have lost myself in our daily lives. I have lost myself in relishing little smiles and laughter. I have lost myself in celebrations that most parents wouldn’t understand: a purposeful splash in the tub, a giggle that gives you goosebumps, rolling over to reach an object. I have lost myself in appreciating those around us. I have lost myself in fighting for our son. So I confess. I did lose myself, and I’m completely fine with it.

Leaders must guard their family time The golden text of scripture Selie Visa
Ben Reed
Study passage: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
“Being in a salaried role, you may not be tracking your hours. But your family is.”
W
hen I was in graduate school, I worked an hourly job as a barista. I loved it, for so many different reasons. The people, the atmosphere, the camaraderie and the unlimited supply of coffee. I cannot overstate the beauty of that last truth. A few years later, as I was finishing up school, I took a role on staff at a church. Instead of hourly, I was salaried. No more punching a clock. No more *required* lunch breaks. No more worrying about hitting my *full time* hour mark. A consistent paycheck was a thing of beauty. I wasn’t paid by the hour anymore. Now I was paid regardless of hours. I was paid the same whether I worked 40 hours or 80 hours. I was now being evaluated not based on the time I put in, but by the work I put out. My “grade” was built on the projects I completed. The leaders I recruited. The deadlines I hit. The goals I surpassed. Being a “doer” by nature, I loved this. I loved tackling new initiatives, writing new curricula and building a team to help accomplish it all. And now I had the flexibility to work from anywhere I chose: the office, a coffee shop, outside or even my own house. It was amazing. Until it wasn’t. Work continued to creep into family time. What felt like great momentum and progress began to take over my life. I found myself checking emails at any, and all, hours of the night. On my days “off,” I was cranking through writing projects, meeting with leaders and planning events. And everywhere I turned, I was met with a, “Wow, you’re doing such a great job!” Encouragement for a job well done is like crack for a “doer’s” soul. It feeds pride, and affirms all of the extra hours devoted, no matter what they cost in the moment. “Great job!” doesn’t take into consideration the sacrifice that others had to make. It doesn’t factor in the ripple effect that the extra hours during family dinner had. Or the toll that it took when you scheduled a “working lunch” instead of capitalizing on time with your family. “Great job!” feeds the visible, outwardfacing side of a completed project. The place where pride loves to hang out. What I found was that every time I sent an email during family time, I was telling them that work was more important.* I was putting in all kinds of overtime for my job, and slighting the ones I loved the most.
God has placed your family under your care. And if you abdicate your role, you are spurning a gift God has given you. A beautiful, precious and at times fragile gift. One that’s not easily gained, but in a moment can be lost. Children are a gift from God. A reward (Psalm 127:3). And a spouse? “Fathers can give their sons an inheritance of houses and wealth, but only the LORD can give an understanding wife” (Proverbs 19:14). My family is my primary calling. And so is yours. It doesn’t matter if you’re a full-time vocational minister or not. If God’s blessed you with a family, that’s your first calling. And it’s your job to guard your time with them, and treat it as the gift it is intended to be in your life. Here are some ways I intentionally guard my time. Guarding my family time 1. No more emails buzzing my phone: When I feel my phone buzz, like Pavlov’s dog I have to check. Until I do, I twitch. So I turned off the buzz, and do you know what happened? I stopped twitching.
wife, where I’d tell her exactly what I’m doing: I’m jotting down an idea so I won’t forget it. Because if I don’t capture that idea, I’ll be haunted by it, not able to think about anything else until I record it. Quick. Easy. Done. Back to my family. 4. Take pictures, but don’t post them: This was a big one. Because I’d take my phone out of my pocket to capture a moment, then when I went to post it to Instagram I’d get sucked in to the web of social media. Then I’d remember that email I had to send. Then I’d text a co-worker. By the time I’d blinked, an hour had passed. So now I just use my camera app, take the picture, then post later. It’s an easy step, and one that keeps me engaged with my family. 5. Get up early: When I need to get extra work done, just like you do, I get up extra early. If a sacrifice has to be made, I’m going to be the one to make it, not my family. I’ll work when it’s inconvenient for me. My wife and kids aren’t naturally up at 4 a.m.
6. Be present: When I’m with my family, I work hard to be with my family. It sounds simple, but removing distractions so that I can live life in the moment with those I love communicates loads of value. I’m still not perfect at this. It’s a work in progress. But I’m continuing to take steps in the right direction. Oftentimes, it’s two steps forward, then one step backward. But I’m moving in the right 3. Capture ideas, but don’t act on them: direction. At least, I think I am. You’re probably If you’re like me, inspiration never strikes at better off asking my wife, though. You and your family the perfect moment. I don’t have the grand I was tired of putting my family second to idea when I have my computer open. I have *There are times when emails and phone my job. My I’m in the middle of a meeting. Or…on my day Emergencies happen. I’m talking more about family is my primary calling. off. So I started working out this thing with my patterns of behavior here, not one-offs.

2. Calendar my Sabbath. I actually block off time on my calendar for my day off every week. But even this hasn’t always worked. I’d block off the time, but still find a way to squeeze in an hour or two here and there. So in addition to calendaring my day off, I had to actually honor that. Those are two different, but equally important, tasks.
Stop and Go
he story of the Bible can be summed up by this simple phrase: God initiates and we respond. “Just at the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly” (Romans 5:6). So often we like to run off and do our own thing. We like to initiate things and then pray for God to bless them, pray for Him to stamp them with His rubber seal of approval. Then we wonder why our efforts bear little fruit. We have the equation mixed up. God initiates; we respond. If we want to learn how to bear much fruit and know His power infusing all we do, then we need to learn this simple principle: Stop and then go. What do I mean?
Stop: Stop running around trying to make things happen, and enter the secret place— His presence. Spend time there. Abide there. Dwell in the secret place and listen. Hear Father’s heart; listen to what He is telling you. Go: Now, go! Go and do what He has told you to do. God will empower you to do what He has instructed you to do. He will make the necessary resources available to you. He will equip you to carry out His will. He will empower you and sustain you. Stop and go. Every day, go into His presence before you go out onto the streets. Live out of the secret place. Stop and then go. Excerpt From: Rolland and Heidi Baker. “Reckless Devotion.” iBooks.
Rick Warren: Christians obey God out of love, not fear Katherine Weber
W
arren, who heads the popular Saddleback Church in Orange County, California, explains in his daily devotional published Thursday that while many non-Christians might wrongfully assume that believers obey God out of fear, Christians are actually happy to obey God because of His love for them. “Why do we obey God? Nonbelievers get this wrong all the time. They say, ‘I don’t want to be a Christian because I don’t want to obey God. You believers obey Him out of guilt or fear or obligation, and I don’t want that for my life,” Warren writes. “Why do we really obey God? Because He loves us! He wants the best for us. He loves you like nobody else will ever love you. The Bible says the only reason there’s love in the world is because God is love. We don’t obey God out of fear or guilt or obligation. We obey God out of love because He loved us and saved us,” the megachurch pastor adds. Warren goes on to say that once believers find Jesus and form a close relationship with Him, following His Word becomes easier. Having found a deeper meaning to their lives, Christians no longer seek cheap thrills, such as drugs or sex. The megachurch pastor uses the example of being a Christian in high school, and explaining to a nonbeliever that he is no longer tempted by sinful habits because such things are “cheap, phony thrills that seem to give a temporary kick to life but then they kick back. They might look like freedom, but they don’t last, and they lead to despair, not dignity — depression, not delight.” Warren concludes his message by citing John 15:9-11, which draws a connection between God’s love and our obedience.
“I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. ... When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!” the verses read. Dan Delzell, pastor of Wellspring Lutheran Church in Papillion, Nebraska, previously discussed God’s wrath and love in an op-ed in The Christian Post, explaining that the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament are the same. The connection between God’s wrath against sin and evil and His love for sinners can be seen through His ultimate sacrifice on the cross, Delzell says. “We are the ones who make the Bible complicated by refusing to see the common thread throughout all of Scripture. There doesn’t seem to be a connection between the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament ... unless you understand the cross. This is where God’s wrath for sin and love for sinners was satisfied,” the pastor writes. “Punishment was needed in order to pay for the offenses committed by sinners. Who could bear that punishment? An eternity of suffering on our part could never fully pay for our sins against God. We would always remain debtors to the One who made us,” Delzell continues, adding that God showed His love to us through his death on the cross, which saved us as sinners. “The cross proves it. What you now do with Christ’s sacrifice for your sins is up to you, as you listen to the Holy Spirit ... or to those misguided voices in our world who are busy storing up God’s wrath for themselves, rather than getting to know the Father through the Son,” the pastor concludes.
1. Introduction: The Gospel of John, chapter 3 verse 16, is one of the all-time beloved and well-known verses in the entire Bible. It is frequently called the “golden text” of Scripture. 2. Reality of our nature: We are in total ruin in God’s sight. We are dead, lost, condemned, unclean, alienated, totally depraved. We cannot influence on our part a right relationship with God. Because of our spiritual state we cannot fix ourselves. We are sinners. That is not an excuse. It is a reality. We are spiritually dead and lost. 3. Who God is: God is the One with all wisdom, knowledge, power, and authority. God is the Creator and not a created being nor a part of the creation. He is the One who established the universe with a word and set time in motion. God is omnipotent. He is all-powerful. God is eternal. God has always existed. He has neither a beginning nor an ending. God is holy and perfect. God is righteous and in him there is no sin. God is omnipresent. He is present everywhere at the same time. God is omniscient. God knows everything. God is love. God’s love is unconditional and selfless toward mankind. God is good and all that he originally created before the Fall was good. God is full of mercy. God is patient and slow to anger. God is truth and is trustworthy in all He says and does. God is just. God is fair, honest and just in His dealings with mankind. 4. So Loved: Sin entered mankind through the disobedience of Adam and Eve. The result of sin is death. Death is two fold. First, it is physical death. From dust we were made and to dust we return. Second, it is spiritual death. Spiritual death is worst than physical death because it means eternal separation from God. Among his many attributes God is also love. His very nature is love. His love for mankind, the crown of his creation, is supremely expressed when he sent his own Son Jesus into the world as the atoning sacrifice for our sins. 5. The World: The world here can be taken as the cosmos. The world includes everybody. Each one of us, is uniquely and passionately loved by this awesome and powerful God. He cares and is mindful of everyone all over the world. 6. That He Gave: God’s love for mankind is more pure and rich and true than any love we could experience in this world. Out from God’s love flows a generosity
beyond comprehension. God showered on us the greatest gift of all. God loves us. He always has. In Christ he reaches down to us. Jesus Christ gave himself to you and to me. The Bible calls him “the unspeakable gift.” 7. His Only Begotten Son: That gift was himself. Jesus is fully God and yet humbled himself to become fully man. Death was the natural consequence for our sin but Jesus came to pay that penalty and redeem us. 8. Whoever believes: Jesus Christ is not merely a spiritual guide who came to show sinners the path in which they ought to travel. He is himself the Way to the Father. The sinless, spotless Lamb of God died in our place. All our sins were laid on him, and he paid our death penalty. Because that penalty has now been paid by the blood of Jesus on the cross and because that gift has been given, we need only to believe, to accept, to acknowledge, that the debt has already been paid. The word “whoever” indicates that the gift of freedom from sin, condemnation and death is not restricted to a particular race or nation. Salvation belongs to anyone and anywhere in the world who will believe. 9. Should Not Perish: God’s purpose toward humankind is positive; it is an attitude of love. He is not seeking an excuse to condemn human beings but is rather endeavouring to save them. Those who believe won’t have to suffer the penalty of sin and death. For those who believe, death is not a finality. It is not the end. 10. But Have Everlasting Life: Only Jesus can save us from sin, condemnation and death. Only in him can we find eternal life. Everlasting life is something far greater and more beautiful and lasting than anything this earth has to offer. We have heaven, we have eternity, we have perfect fellowship with God himself to look forward to. Eternal life is not just the continuation of a beating heart and functions of the mind. We will come alive with glorified bodies which death can no longer touch. We shall see God as he is and dwell with him for eternity.
This is the seed that bears good fruit for generations Jennifer Eivaz
T
here is a prophetic story in Daniel about a ruler who was the worst of all (see Daniel 8:8-14). The passage prophetically described his power as reaching to the heavens and knocking some of the hosts and stars out of place. It also said he would attack the Prince of the hosts, which is Jesus, through some specific methods. He will stop the offerings, destroy the temple and throw truth to the ground. He will continue his attack for a period of time until Jesus overthrows him. (This ruler is known historically as Antiochus Epiphanes.) Although this prophecy is fulfilled, we see the same war tactics being used today. Satan continues to make war against Jesus Christ by attacking the offerings and attacking the church. When “giving” to the church is suppressed, it binds the church from its mission and suppresses the truth from going out. It’s an assault that happens on national and individual levels. As individuals, many believers have been led astray by spiritualsounding philosophies when it comes to their attendance and giving to the local church. Here are a few: • I give when I feel led to give. • Tithes are under the law. • I don’t need to go to church. I am the church. • I’m under grace, so I don’t have to _________ (fill in the blank). These philosophies haven’t produced faithfulness in giving and serving the body of Christ and must be confronted. These attitudes have not built His church but actually hinder the church and the message of salvation. We can’t be prophesying revival into our cities and nations and then not pay anything into it. Many people cite the “legality” of giving tithes as their Biblical excuse to not give much at all. The tithes put order and regularity into our giving, and giving is
about the heart more than the set amount. When we can’t pass the test of giving, it delays revival because we are not ready to carry it. I believe the Lord is challenging us all to take Him at His Word when it comes to giving, because He promises to provide back in abundance. “Give, and it will be given to you: Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will men give unto you. For with the measure you use, it will be
measured unto you” (Luke 6:38). Giving is the seed that bears fruit for generations Nearly 100 years ago, a family gave their personal finances to purchase land for a new work in Turlock, California. The late evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson had introduced Turlock to the Holy Spirit, and a Spirit-filled community had emerged needing property. This same family’s grandson, Bill Larson, also became an established city-wide evangelist, with discipleship studies going on in his home nearly every night. Thousands of persons were converted as a result. He was so zealous that he finally quit his job, choosing to trust the Lord for his provision. He wanted to reach every unsaved person that he could. He died last month, but his legacy continues on.
This man was also responsible for the conversion and discipleship of my husband, Ron, as a teenager. He had found Ron smoking in a local park and led him to Christ. Bill then invited Ron to a Bible study and discipled him there. A decade later my husband was named the senior pastor of Harvest Christian Center in Turlock, California. During the funeral for this evangelist, we found out the land purchased by his grandparents is the land our church is sitting on. Do you think this is a coincidence? Absolutely not! The seed for the gospel was planted a century ago and is still producing its harvest. What we sow into the kingdom of God will supernaturally grow for generations. Over a year ago, I was talking with a young woman in our church. She had a baby and was not married. I convinced her to make her live-in relationship right with God. She and her boyfriend agreed, and we set the wedding date. As I met their families for the first time, I realized the young woman’s father was a faithful elder in the church where I committed my life to Christ 25 years ago. How exciting it was for this elder to experience the fruit of his faithfulness and to have it returned back to his own family. I married his daughter and sonin-law that day, bringing them all, including an adorable grandbaby, into the proper covering of Christ. In 1 Chronicles 17, we see that King David desired to build God a house. The Lord responds to David, saying that because he has taken care of His house, the Lord will take care of David’s house. The heart of God has not changed in this matter. Building His church on earth does not go unnoticed or without reward. The Lord is promising and challenging us all to take care of His house, His church, on the earth. He will, in turn, joyfully take care of ours, and His reward is for generations after us. Jennifer Eivaz is a vibrant minister and international conference speaker who carries the wisdom and fire of the Holy Spirit. She presently serves as an executive pastor with Harvest Christian Center in Turlock, California.

Unless India delivers, world won’t be leprosy free Charu Bahri IANS and IndiaSpend
F
or three years, Uttar Pradesh farmhand Pradeep Kumar, 24, has been treated for a disease that India largely eliminated 11 years ago: Leprosy, one of humankind’s oldest diseases - it is commonly mentioned in the Bible is notorious for the visible disfigurement of victims and their subsequent ostracisation. In 1991, when India began economic liberalisation, leprosy was reported in nearly 26 of 10,000 people. Within 14 years, that prevalence rate - thanks to concerted efforts and multi-drug therapy - had been cut 25 times to less than one per 10,000, the World Health Organization (WHO) threshold for “elimination” as a public-health problem. In 2000, the world met the WHO aim for the global elimination of leprosy, caused by a slow-growing, rod-shaped bacterium. Between 2001 and 2005, when India achieved the target, a 61 percent fall in leprosy was reported globally (763,262 to 296,499), largely because of a fourfold drop in cases from In-
dia (615,000 to 161,457). Since then, especially in the last five years, experts have suggested a degree of stagnation and lack of new approaches in leprosy control in India, with even the WHO calling for a global summit in 2013 to address stalled progress. Indeed, leprosy appears to have dropped off the government's radar. Today, Kumar is one of roughly 125,000 Indians who have consistently been diagnosed with leprosy ev-
ery year, 58 percent of the new cases detected globally. The prevalence rate is about 0.69 per 10,000, but this means 88,833 Indians still have leprosy. These are the official data. India could have twice as many leprosy cases as reported, even up to four times, said Sunil Anand, executive director of The Leprosy Mission Trust India, an NGO running 14 hospitals. For instance, a 2013 study based in Uttar Pradesh and a 2009 Maharashtra study
point to India’s under-reporting of leprosy. When India’s fight against leprosy stagnates, so does progress towards a leprosy-free world. New global targets hope to restart India’s battle against leprosy Earlier this year, the WHO unveiled a new anti-leprosy strategy, with a 2020 deadline and targets that will compel India to get moving on leprosy again. Target 1: Reduce the
number of children diagnosed with leprosy-affected disabilities to zero Where India stands: Of 11,365 new child cases identified in 2014, 245 had visible deformities caused by leprosy. In technical parlance, such cases are called grade-II disabilities. Target 2: Reduce the new patients diagnosed with leprosy-related deformities to less than one per million population Where India stands: India’s grade-II disability rate
has risen from 3.72 per million to 4.48 per million over the last three years. Target 3: Overturn laws that allows for discrimination against leprosy patients. Where India stands: India has many archaic laws that discriminate against leprosy victims. Some of them: The Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, and the Dissolution of Muslim Marriage Act, 1939, both accept leprosy as grounds for divorce, annulment or separation. The Orissa Municipal Act, 1950, Andhra Pradesh Municipalities Act, 1965, Orissa Gram Panchayats Act, 1964, Rajasthan Municipality Act, 1959, among others, disqualify leprosy victims from holding civic posts. Section 56 of the Railways Act, 1989, and Section 8(4) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, can be cited to deny persons affected by leprosy the right to travel in the railways or to obtain a driving license. Most of these laws were written before the development of multi-drug therapy (MDT) for leprosy, the WHOprescribed standard treatment since 1981. India has not revised these laws since.
related deformities hinges on early detection and treatment, something India is currently not focusing on. After India eliminated leprosy as a public health problem in December 2005, leprosy services fell off the government’s priority list. They were integrated with general health services to cut costs. Identifying leprosy was now the responsibility of poorly trained frontline primary health care workers, who also run higher priority programmes. “ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers and multi-purpose workers are more focused on maternal and child health targets and other diseases than leprosy,” said Anand. “Also, they are trained only to suspect and refer (to doctors) possible leprosy cases.” Over five campaigns between 1997 and 2005, grassroots leprosy health workers were trained en masse to identify the disease. That effort has largely ended. The budget for leprosy fell over three straight years, IndiaSpend recently reported, probable cause A strategy for success: for the lack of training. Mass training Reducing the number Bring back surveillance to of new cases with leprosy- identify hidden cases
A lot of patients delay treatment because of the continuing stigma of leprosy. Before December 2005, repeated drives persuaded leprosy victims to sign up for treatment. Today, however, “we are relying too heavily on self-reporting by patients, which presupposes high awareness and an encouraging social environment, while frankly, we are not very good at either,” said Bhushan Kumar, former head, Dermatology, Venereology & Leprology, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh. Instead, Bhushan Kumar suggested surveillance in endemic areas to identify (and treat) hidden cases, and vaccinating or prescribing preventative medicine to people at high risk of contracting leprosy, such as those with a relative suffering from the disease and those living in endemic areas, such as Chhattisgarh and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, which have not achieved “elimination”. “Research shows that a second dose of BCG (tuberculosis vaccination) or the Mycobacterium W (MIP) vaccine could help prevent the development of leprosy in a large number of patients,” he said.
4 criminal assault cases on Africans reported Narayanasamy to become new Puducherry Chief Minsiter New Delhi, May 28 (PTi): Amid outrage by African envoys following killing of a Congolese youth in the national capital, four cases of alleged criminal assault on African nationals in south Delhi have come to the fore. All four incidents took place between 9.30 PM and 11.30 PM on Thursday in Mehrauli area. All four complainants, in their 30s, have been residing in Delhi for past few years, police said. In two cases, the complainants are women -- one a Uganda national and the other a native of South Africa, in the other two, the complainants are two Nigerian men. In two cases in which the Nigerian men are involved is "believed" to have taken place following an argument with the locals, a senior police official said. However, circumstances in the other two cases are not clear, he said. The accused in all four cases are yet to be identified, the official said. Police claimed that these are four separate incidents which have nothing to do with the violence against Indians in Congo, following the youth's murder in Vasant Kunj area here.
Attacks on Africans a serious issue: Yechury New Delhi, May 28 (iaNS): Criticising the central government over attacks on African nationals in India, CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury on Saturday said that such attacks were a serious issue with international repercussions. "Attacks on Africans in Delhi is a serious issue with international repercussions. The BJP government can't wish them away," Yechury said in a tweet. Yechury's comments come after a 23-yearold Nigerian student was allegedly beaten by a local over a parking dispute in Hyderabad. The incident comes days after a 23-year-old Congolese national was beaten to death in south Delhi's Vasant Kunj area over a minor dispute.\ The incidents of attacks has angered African envoys in Delhi who have protested to the Indian government, which has assured protection for the thousands of African students who study in India. The attack on the Congolese national saw repercussions in Democratic Republic of Congo capital Kinshasa, where Indian shops were attacked a some Indians injured in apparent retaliation earlier this week. Envoys of African countries on Thursday had expressed shock over killing of Congolese national Masonda Ketada Oliver here last week following which India assured them of safety of African nationals. Police also claimed that the attacks, the causes behind which are yet to be verified, did not take place on racial lines. "Cases of causing hurt and wrongful restraint have

Committed to bringing back Kashmiri Pandits: Mehbooba SriNagar, May 28 (PTi): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today asserted that her government was committed to bringing back Kashmiri Pandits and other migrants to the Valley and would set up transit accommodations for them till they feel safe to return to their native places. Rejecting claims of opposition parties and separatists that the government was setting up separate colonies for Kashmiri Pandits, she told the Assembly that the construction of transit accommodation was among recommendations made by the Prime Minister's Working Group, formed in 2005, and it will be for Muslim and Sikh migrants too. "This is a facility for migrants. Don't we have Muslim migrants? Don't we have migrants in Jammu? Are not there Sikhs and other people among them? If we are saying 50 per cent will be Kashmiri Pandits and the rest others, you are saying it is Israel-like situation," she said.
been registered in all four cases. Efforts are on to nab the accused," Additional DCP (south) Nupur Prasad said. Last week, 23-year-old Oliver was allegedly beaten to death by three men following an argument over hiring an auto-rickshaw in south Delhi's Vasant Kunj area. While two of the accused have been arrested in connection with the case, the third is still absconding.
V Narayanasamy
PuDucherry, May 28 (PTi): Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister V Narayanasamy was today unanimously elected Legislature Party leader and is all is set to become the tenth Chief Minister of Puducherry.
Party Senior leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit and AICC General Secretary Mukul Wasnik, who were deputed by the Congress high command to hold consultations in this regard, told reporters at the end of the meeting that Narayanasamy's choice was unanimous. They said all party elected legislators agreed that Narayanasamy should be made the Chief Minister and elected him the CLP leader. Dixit said the PCC president A Namassivayam proposed the name of Narayanasamy and former Chief Minister V Vaithilingam seconded it. The name of Narayanasamy was also approved by AICC chief Sonia Gandhi, she said. Narayanasamy had served as the Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office in the second UPA
government, after being MoS, Parliamentary Affairs, in the first UPA government. He did not contest the May 16 Assembly election from Puducherry and will now have to seek election to the legislature in a bypoll. There was a close race between him and Namassivayam who won in the assembly polls retaining Villianoor constituency. In the assembly polls, Congress won 15 seats while its ally DMK bagged 2 in the 30-member-assembly. Protests over selection Apparently unhappy over the election of V Narayanasamy as the new CM of the Union territory today, supporters of a faction in the Congress protested against the decision and went on a rampage damaging buses here. Windscreens of at least eight
buses operating between Puducherry and Chennai were broken after the protesters, believed to be supporters of PCC president A Namassivayam pelted the vehicles with stones. Driver of a bus sustained injuries in the stone pelting. Some of the passengers in a bus also suffered injuries when glass splinters hit them, they said. The protestors also shouted slogans against Narayanasamy outside the hotel where the Congress Legislature Party meeting was held. They contended a person who had not contested the elections should not be made CM. When Namassivayam came out of the hotel, they surrounded him and posed several queries regarding the decision. Namassivayam was seen placating some of the protestors.
EC recommends cancellation of polls to two seats New Delhi, May 28 (PTi): In a first, the Election Commission today recommended cancelling polls to two Tamil Nadu assembly seats following evidence of use of money to influence voters, saying the atmosphere there is "seriously vitiated" to hold the democratic exercise at this stage. From these two constituencies, cash of over
Rs 8 crore has been seized. Authorities also recovered over 2,500 litres of liquor, besides gifts like silver, dhotis and sarees meant during searches. While cancellation of polls normally takes place following evidence that rigging, muscle power and booth capturing was done to influence polls, this is the first time the poll body is recommending cancel-
lation of polls because of voters being bribed with money, EC said. The Commission has recommended to Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah to cancel the notification regarding holding of polls to Aravkurichi and Thanjavur Assembly constituencies. The Commission also said it will recommend to the Governor a revised schedule to hold the polls
afresh for the two constituencies in due course of time. In a detailed 29-page recommendation, the Commission said Rosaiah's 'observation' that the postponement of elections to the two constituencies will deprive the members to be elected from these constituencies to vote in the coming Rajya Sabha elections "is an extraneous
consideration inasmuch as the members elected on the basis of an election which is not free and fair would not be true representatives of the electors of these constituencies." It also said that "there is no requirement under the law that for conducting the elections to the Rajya Sabha, all the seats in the legislative assembly should be filled."
BJP highlights achievements of Modi government PaTNa, May 28 (PTi): Highlighting the performance of the Narendra Modi government in the past two years, senior BJP leader Kalraj Mishra today said the government is moving on the right track with its economy growing at the "fastest speed in the world". "The government is working on the right track and its economy is growing at the fastest speed in the world with a growth rate of 7.6 per cent," Mishra, also the Union minister for Medium, Small Micro Enterprises (MSME), told reporters here. "This government is committed to work for 1.25 crore Indians and the Prime Minister is working day and night for the uplift of poor farmers, downtrodden, dalits, backwards, women and common people," he said. Speaking as part of the celebrations of 'Vikas Purv', party general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya said the Prime Minister has improved the status of the country abroad during his foreign visits.
Modi govt's 2nd anniv event starts at India Gate ‘Little to celebrate as Modi govt completes 2 years’ New Delhi, May 28 (iaNS): A gala participants in the social media space to event "Ek Nayi Subah" was being held at the India Gate lawns here on Saturday to mark the completion of two years of the Narendra Modi government. The event is being held in "talkathon" format with ministers answering queries put to them. Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State for Urban Development Babul Supriyo and Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore were among the ministers to take part in the initial part of the programme. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to come towards the end of the event. The Talkathon format allows
"Earlier, when the Prime Minister used to make a visit outside it created an impression he had come to seek something for the country but PM Narendra Modi visit to 45 countries on the contrary is now seen as he has come to give something to the the visiting country," he said. The BJP leaders also underlined beneficial schemes like Prime Minister Jan Dhan Yojna, PM Suraksha Bima Yojna, Atal
post questions on Twitter which are answered by the guests in real-time. The programme is being telecast live on various channels of Doordarshan including DD National and mediapersons have not been invited for the coverage. "Media has not been invited for coverage. The event is being held in a studio format," an official of the Information and Broadcasting ministry said. The government has hired Geometry Global Encompass Network, an event management company, for the programme. The government had also organised a "Talkathon" last year to mark its first anniversary.
Pension Yojna, PM Mudra Yojna and PM Fasal Bima Yojna among others. In the context of Bihar, the BJP leaders reeled out funds allocation under different schemes made by the NDA government at the Centre. Bihar got Rs 2.96 crore under Prime Minister Suraksha Bima Yojna out of a total allocation of Rs 9.43 crore across the country during the period, Mishra said adding 47,21,653 people ben-
efitted from the programme under the programme. Likewise, 2,57,995 people benefited from Atal Pension Yojna in Bihar, he added. Senior state party leaders Sushil Kumar Modi, leader of opposition in state assembly Prem Kumar, state party chief Mangal Pandey and senior leader Nand Kishore Yadav, also highlighted several welfare programmes launched by the NDA government in the past two years.
New Delhi, May 28 (PTi): "Dull and dark shadow crept over India in the last two years," Congress today said dismissing the government's claims on performance on completion of two years in office and slammed it for alleged "systematic attack on institutions, icons and inclusiveness". "As the second year of the Modi government draws to a close, sadly there is little to celebrate," it said. "Muscled thugs impose their ideas of morality and lynch mobs kill people on mere suspicion. BJP leaders spew venomous messages of hate and violence to question the patriotism of every Indian who disagrees with them," the party said in a 59-page booklet, titled "Pragati Ki Tham Gayi Chaal, Do Saal, Desh Ka Bura Hal" (The pace of progress has stopped. Two years and the nation's bad plight). Claiming the booklet to be "Sachchaai Ka Aaina (Mirror of Reality), AICC trained its guns on the NDA dispensation on a wide range of issues including economy, employment, price rise and foreign policy. The party went hammer and tongs at the NDA government over its role in Congress-ruled Aurnachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand and accused it of "murder of democracy and subversion of federalism". Ahead of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in 2017, the party tried to paint the Modi government as "anti-Dalit" citing RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's last year remarks on caste-based reservation. The party alleged that Modi and his government are "surreptitiously following the RSS agenda" through its actions and policies including "systematic withdrawal of schemes for SCs/STs/BCs and by imposing budgetary cuts". "The last two years have seen a dull and dark shadow creep over India. People are bewildered and confused. Instead of promised 'achche din', they are witnessing a systematic attack on India's institutions, icons and inclusiveness," the booklet said.

Trump’s San Diego rally draws over 1,000 chanting protesters sAN DIEGO, MAy 28 (REutERs): Donald Trump brought his message of walls and deportations to the doorstep of America’s busiest border crossing on Friday as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee greeted supporters in San Diego, amid one of the largest counter-protests organized against him. The scene inside the San Diego Convention Center during Trump’s speech was relatively placid, while outside demonstrators opposed to his controversyridden White House bid marched and chanted, carrying signs criticizing his rhetoric against illegal immigration. Waving U.S. and Mexican flags, more than 1,000 people turned out for antitrump rallies in San Diego, a city on the U.S.-Mexico border whose San Ysidro port of entry sees nearly 300,000 people a day cross legally between the countries. San Diego is considered a binational city by many who live and work on opposite sides of the border, and about a third of the city’s population is Latino. During Trump’s speech on Friday, some protesters outside the convention center scaled a barrier and lobbed water bottles at police. One man was pulled off the wall and arrested
California, which is home to the largest Latino population in the country. Late last month, a visit to the California Republican convention set off days of protests in the area, leading to several arrests.

as others were surrounded by fellow protesters and backed away from the confrontation. After the convention center emptied, clusters of Trump supporters and anti-Trump demonstrators began to mix in the streets, many exchanging shouted epithets and some throwing water bottles at one another. Police in riot gear declared the gathering an unlawful assembly and ordered the crowd to disperse, herding the crowd out of the city’s hotel and restaurantfilled Gaslamp Quarter. San Diego police said on Twitter that 35 arrests
Outrage in multi-ethnic Malaysia as government backs Islamic law KuALA LuMPuR, MAy 28 (REutERs): Prime Minister Najib Razak’s government threw its support in parliament this week behind an Islamic penal code that includes amputations and stoning, shocking some of his allies and stoking fears of further strains in the multiethnic country. Critics believe the scandal-tainted prime minister is using ‘hudud’, the Islamic law, to shore up the backing of Muslim Malay voters and fend off attacks on his leadership ahead of critical by-elections next month and a general election in 2018. The government on Thursday unexpectedly submitted to parliament a hudud bill that had been proposed by the Islamist group Parti Islam se-Malaysia’s (PAS). Although debate on the law was deferred to October by PAS leader Abdul Hadi Awang, its submission to parliament brought criticism from leaders across the political spectrum, including allies of the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, who represent the ethnic Chinese and Indian communities. Najib sought to ease tensions with his allies on Friday, saying the bill was “misunderstood”. “It’s not hudud, but what we refer to as enhanced punishment,” he told a news conference after meeting leaders of his ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) party. “It applies only to certain offences and this comes under the jurisdiction of the Syariah court and is only applicable to the Muslims. It has nothing to do with non-Muslims.” He added that the punishments would be limited and canings meted out under the law would not injure or draw blood. Earlier in the day, the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA), a key party in the BN coalition, called the submission of the hudud bill to parliament “unconstitutional”. “As we repeatedly pointed out, the implementation of Hudud law is against the spirit of the Federal Constitution, and would ruin the inter-ethnic relationship in the country,” MCA President Liow Tiong Lai said. Arguments for and against the introduction of hudud have divided Malaysia for years. Most of the Southeast Asian country’s states implement sharia, the Islamic legal system, but its reach is restricted by federal law. Still, the hudud bill appears doomed as the UMNO-led coalition lacks the two-thirds majority needed to pass it into law. The Islamist party PAS is pushing for a constitutional amendment that would allow hudud to be implemented in Kelantan, a northern state where nightclubs are banned and there are separate public benches for men and women. Many fear such a move would open doors for other states to bring in the Islamic penal code. Hudud stipulates ancient religious punishments for Muslims who violate the law. EYEING POLLS Critics say that Najib, with an eye on by-elections for two parliamentary seats on June 18, is seeking to appease the majority Muslim votebank with his stand on hudud and to deflect attention from a multi-billion-dollar scandal at the state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). They allege Najib was a beneficiary of 1MDB’s funds, after about $680 million was deposited in his bank account before a 2013 election. Najib has denied any wrongdoing. Some political heavyweights in Najib’s party have questioned whether he can lead them to victory in the 2018 general election. However, he has consolidated power by sacking dissenters within UMNO, which has ruled Malaysia since 1957, and using a controversial and repressive colonial-era sedition law to silence other critics. Najib seized on the resounding victory of a coalition partner in a Borneo state election earlier month as evidence that he and his government remain popular. The by-elections in peninsula Malaysia are likely to be a closer contest. “Najib did not want the 1MDB global scandal to become the issue in both by-elections,” said Lim Kit Siang, parliamentary leader of the Democratic Action Party, adding that Najib has ensured the focus will now be on hudud.
were made during the protest. No property damage or injuries were reported, police said. “Fantastic job on handling the thugs who tried to disrupt our very peaceful and well attended rally,” Trump tweeted to police afterwards. Trump has weathered months of blowback from all ends of the political spectrum for his immigration policy, which calls for the building of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border and deporting the nearly 11 million undocumented immigrants who reside in the United States.
Critics have said his plan is needlessly cruel and impossible to implement. At Trump’s campaign stops, attendees often chant “build the wall.” While Trump is running unopposed in the June 7 California Republican primary, his stance on border control and deportation seems unlikely to resonate with the electorate at large in a state where political fallout from a Republicanbacked crackdown on illegal immigrants 20 years ago cost the party dearly. Friday was not the first time Trump has been greeted by civil unrest in
WAITING FOR “FIRST PLACE FINISHER” Shortly before taking the stage in San Diego, Trump issued a statement ruling out a one-on-one debate with second-place Democratic hopeful Bernie Sanders, who was also in California, killing off a potentially high-ratings television spectacle. The suggested debate, an idea first raised during a talk show appearance by the New York billionaire, would have sidelined likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton but given Sanders a huge platform ahead of California Democratic primary. A day after saying he would welcome a Sanders debate, Trump called the idea “inappropriate,” declaring that he should only face the Democrats’ final choice. “I will wait to debate the first-place finisher in the Democratic Party, probably Crooked Hillary Clinton,” Trump said in a statement. Sanders, a U.S. senator from Vermont, expressed disappointment on Friday, and sought to goad Trump
into reconsidering. “Well, Mr. Trump, what are you afraid of?” he said in a video clip posted on ABC News’ Twitter account. Trump suggested broadcast networks were unwilling to go along with his demand that at least $10 million raised from the encounter be donated to charity. “I’d love to debate Bernie,” he told a rally in Fresno, California. “But the networks want to keep the money for themselves.” Sanders is trailing Clinton in the race to secure their party’s nomination, but opinion polls show he is slicing into her lead in California. Clinton has shown no interest in debating Sanders before the California primary, which will be part of a final slate of nominating contests. It is possible she will clinch the nomination by winning New Jersey earlier that day, making the outcome in California superfluous. The former U.S. secretary of state has said she is looking forward to debating Trump later this year ahead of the Nov. 8 general election. Clinton leads Trump by 4 percentage points in the most recent Reuters/ Ipsos poll. Democrats nationally remain evenly split between Clinton and Sanders.

Pyongyang threatens to fire at Seoul’s warships crossing maritime border sEOuL, MAy 28 (IANs): North Korea on Saturday warned it will fire at any South Korean warship that crosses the disputed western maritime border. “From now on, we will open direct fire on any warship of the South Korean forces without warning, if it intrudes into the extension of the Military Demarcation Line of our side even 0.001 mm in the hotspot of the West Sea,” the North Korean army said in a statement released by state-run news agency KCNA. The warning comes a day after the South Korean navy fired five warning shots when two North Korean boats - a fishing boat and a patrol boat - crossed the disputed western sea boundary that separates the territorial waters of the two countries in the Yellow Sea. The two boats immediately retreated to the northern part of the waters after the shots. In its statement, the North Korean regime rebuked its neighbour for its “reckless military provocation”, which it said stemmed from “a premeditated sinister plot to bedevil the North-South relations and further aggravate the tension on the Korean Peninsula”.
Social media can help identify students at alcohol risk NEw yORK, MAy 28 (IANs) Students who are at the risk of having drinking problems can be identified on social networking sites which are increasingly playing an important role in helping them coordinate, advertise and facilitate their drinking experiences, researchers report. “The strongest predictor of both drinking alcohol and posting about it on social media was espousing an alcohol identity -- meaning that the individuals considered drinking a part of who they are,” said co-lead author Charee Thompson from Ohio University. Those two behaviours were associated with alcohol problems - such as missing school or work, or getting into fights - because of drinking. The researchers found that having a drink was less strongly correlated with alcohol problems than posting about alcohol use was -- though clearly students with alcohol problems were drinking alcohol, according to the study. The researchers are hopeful that the findings can aid policymakers in developing interventions to target the most at risk populations - particularly students with strong alcohol identities.
UNESCO sees threat from cultural destruction KABuL, MAy 28 (REutERs): The world community has yet to find an adequate response to cultural destruction as shown by the deliberate wrecking of ancient sites in Syria and Mali by Islamist radicals, the head of the UN’s cultural organization said. Irina Bokova, director general of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said it took some time for authorities to respond to the significance of what extremist groups were doing. Such groups typically sought to clear the ground to persecute minorities and consolidate power by “cultural cleansing”, removing traces of other cultures, she told Reuters in an interview in Kabul. Fifteen years ago, the Afghan Taliban provided one of the most notorious recent examples when it blew up two giant ancient statues of the Buddha in 2001, decreeing they were un-Islamic. But the razing of medieval shrines in Timbuktu by Malian jihadists in 2012 and then the destruction by Islamic State militants in Syria of parts of the ancient city of Palmyra last year brought the danger home, said
Bokova, among candidates to become UN Secretary General later this year. “I have to say that at the beginning of the Syrian crisis we were not taken that seriously when we started denouncing this destruction,” said Bokova, a former acting foreign minister of Bulgaria who is among candidates to become UN Secretary General later this year. “Now I think people see what the danger is. I know it is not easy but now everybody takes seriously the destruction of heritage and culture as part of this extremist strategy. Probably the most visible embodiment of this, even,” she said. But she said the world was still grappling with how to deal with the problem, which had pushed matters once the preserve of museums firmly into the strategic sphere. “I think it is a new type of phenomenon that is emerging and we are seeking a response.” Last year’s UN Security Council Resolution 2199, which specifically targets the illegal trade in antiquities alongside oil and hostages as a means of shutting off funding to groups like Islamic

State and Al Qaeda, was one example, she said. The trial of the radical Islamist Ahmad al-Faqi al-Mahdi in the International Criminal Court over the destruction of the religious sites in Timbuktu was another. Bokova on Friday signed a culture trust fund agreement with the Afghan government,
aimed at bolstering efforts to promote cultural industries and reaffirm the importance of cultural and national identity. How far such programmes can hope to succeed in countries torn by competing visions of social, religious and cultural identity remains open. In Afghanistan, a country
with more than 30 languages and multiple different ethnicities which has undergone civil war and conflict for most of the past four decades, the notion of cultural identity remains particularly fluid. “I don’t say it’s easy,” Bokova said. “But it is necessary and we have to start from somewhere.”
Police investigate alleged gang rape that has shocked Brazilians RIO DE JANEIRO, MAy 28 (REutERs): Rio de Janeiro police are investigating allegations that more than 30 men and boys raped a 16-year-old girl, officials said on Friday, as outrage spread in the host city for the Olympics and reverberated across the country. The reported assault was discovered after one of the suspects posted to Twitter a video of the nude, semi-conscious youth, with a few men brazenly insulting the girl, showing their faces, and one man heard saying, “more than 30 impregnated her!” The Twitter account where the video was posted has since been suspended. Police said the girl told them more than 30 men had assaulted her, but they could not yet confirm how many took part in the alleged rape, as they are still investigating. “There are all the indications that this rape did in fact happen, but we still have to investigate further before we can absolutely confirm it,” said Fernando Veloso, head of Rio’s civil

police department, at a press conference on Friday. Veloso said police have identified four suspects so far in the assault that apparently took place last Saturday in a western Rio slum - but have yet to make any arrests, saying further investigation is required. Hashtags on Twitter such as #EstuproNaoÉCulpaDaVitima - Portuguese for “rape is not the victim’s fault” - blasting the report-
ed crime were among the top global trends. Many Facebook users in Brazil, including suspended President Dilma Rousseff, the nation’s first woman leader, changed their profile photos to the Venus female gender symbol with words calling for an end to a “culture of rape.” Brazil’s interim President Michel Temer wrote on his Twitter account that he “vehemently repudiates” the
alleged rape, and added that “it is absurd that in the 21st century we have to live with barbaric crimes like this.” Temer appointed a new government this month when Rousseff was suspended to face trial in the Senate for allegedly breaking budget rules. He came under intense criticism for excluding women and black Brazilians from his cabinet - something not seen in decades.
Temer said his justice minister would meet on Tuesday with the public security chiefs who oversee policing in Brazilian states to discuss how better to combat violence against women. The interim president also said he would form a special department within the federal police focused on crimes against women, which would help to coordinate action and share information among the individual state security departments. When Temer served as head of public safety for Sao Paulo state the early 1990s, he created the first police division in Brazil devoted to combating crimes against women, an idea that has since spread throughout the country. RIO RESIDENTS SHOCKED The cruelty of the alleged assault is the latest bleak chapter for Brazil and Rio. The Olympic Games in August were meant to showcase a nation that had become a global power. In-
stead, they will take place as Rousseff faces an impeachment trial, the economy suffers its worst recession since the 1930s, an outbreak of the Zika virus prompts health concerns and a massive corruption scandal at staterun oil company Petrobras infuriates Brazilians. In Rio, a city that has long dealt with serious violence often involving minors, the brutal nature of the allegations shook citizens. Marta and Leticia Festes, a mother and daughter heading to work and university in the Rio neighbourhood of Copacabana, criticized a culture of sexism in Brazil. They said the slow and disorderly justice system lacked teeth and allowed for impunity. “Some men think that they can get away with these things, especially in poor neighbourhoods where the police are never around,” said Marta, 43, who works as a maid. Her 20-year-old daughter, in her third year of studying computer science, said stricter and swifter justice was needed.

Kohli eyes maiden ipl crown for bangalore
BANGALORe, MAy 28 (AFP): The imperious Virat Kohli will be eyeing a fairytale ending Sunday to a record-breaking season when he leads the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League's final against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Kohli has been in the form of his life since the recent World Twenty20 where he was instrumental in taking India to the semifinals before the hosts' heartbreaking loss to the West Indies. The 27-year-old was named player of the tournament after scoring 273 runs in five matches at an average of 136.50, and he has again been in a class of his own in this edition of the IPL. Kohli has shattered the previous best aggregate in a season by scoring 919
runs, including four centuries and six fifties. Rated as the number one T20 batsman in the world, he has also gained kudos for his captaincy during Bangalore's rollercoaster ride to the final which is being played on their home ground. After a disappointing start to the tournament left them bottom of the table at one stage, Kohli inspired them to a charge up the table and secure a second place finish. He had a rare failure in Wednesday's final four eliminator when he was bowled for a duck but South African AB de Villiers stepped up to the plate with an unbeaten 79 which just saw Bangalore over the line. Indian batting icon Sachin Tendulkar said that in a format where the ability to

Ricciardo takes first F1 pole in Monaco MONAcO, MAy 28 (ReuTeRS): Australian Daniel Ricciardo seized the first pole position of his Formula One career at the Monaco Grand Prix on Saturday with world championship leader Nico Rosberg joining him on the front row for Mercedes. The pole, in a time of one minute 13.622 seconds, was former champions Red Bull's first since the Brazil Grand Prix in November 2013. Triple world champion Lewis Hamilton qualified in third place, a remarkable recovery after he suffered a fuel pressure problem at the start of the final session and had to be pushed back along the pitlane. Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, the last driver before Ricciardo to start a race on pole for Red Bull, will join the Briton on the second row for a race where overtaking is extremely difficult.
LONDON/WASHINGTON, MAy 28 (ReuTeRS): More than 100 medical experts, academia and scientists on Friday have called for the Rio Olympic Games to be postponed or moved because of fears that the event could speed up the spread of the Zika virus around the world. Their assessment counters the view of some leading experts of infectious disease who say that as long as the necessary precautions are taken there is no reason to cancel the Games. On Thursday, Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, declared there was no public health reason to cancel or delay this summer's Games. In a public letter posted online, the group of 150 leading public health experts, many of them bioethicists, said the risk of infection from the Zika virus is too high. The letter was sent to Dr. Margaret Chan, director-general of the World Health Organization, and urged that the Games, due to be held in Rio de Janeiro in August, be moved to another location or delayed. "An unnecessary risk is posed when 500,000 foreign tourists from all countries attend the Games, potentially acquire that strain, and return home to places where it can become endemic," the letter said. It can be found at http://rioolympicslater.org/ Bioethicists study ethical problems arising from biological or medical research. Professor Arthur Caplan, director of the division of medical eth-

Hyderabad skipper David Warner has had his own fair share of controversy over the years but he has let his batting do the talking this year. Warner's scintillating innings of 93 not out in Delhi on Friday night ensured his team's qualification for the final which is being played in Bangalore. The Australian's 58ball blitz against Gujarat Lions was his eighth fifty, putting him second in the scoring chart behind Kohli with 779 runs. "The final is
about not worrying about their players and executing our plans," Warner said after the match. Hyderabad's seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the leading wicket-taker with 23 scalps and he has received crucial support from his young Bangladeshi partner Mustafizur Rahman who has taken 16 wickets. After previous editions had been marred by fixing and corruption, this year's tournament has managed to avoid any major scandal. However the venue of the final had to be switched to Bangalore after judges banned Mumbai from hosting matches at a time when the state of Maharashtra has been blighted by drought. Neither of the finalists have ever won the tournament which is now in its ninth year.
WHO rejects call to move Olympics
GeNevA, MAy 28 (IANS): The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Saturday rejected a call to move or postpone the impending Rio Olympics over the Zika virus outbreak. The health watchdog said in a statement that "based on current assessment, cancelling or changing the location of the 2016 Olympics will not significantly alter the international spread of Zika virus". The Olympic Games should be postponed or moved "in the name of public health" over the Zika outbreak in Brazil, more than 100 prominent doctors and professors said in an open letter to the WHO. The Olympics are scheduled from August 5-21. More than 500,000 people are expected to travel to Brazil from around the world. "We make this call despite the widespread fatalism that the Rio 2016 Games are inevitable or 'too big to fail,'" the writers said on Friday in the letter addressed to WHO Director-General Margaret Chan. "Our greater concern is for global health. The Brazilian strain of Zika virus ics at New York University School of Medicine and one of four who authored the letter, said he is skeptical Brazil has the resources to protect the public and is equally skeptical of "general assurances" from public health officials. The letter called on the WHO to convene an independent group to advise it and the International Olympic Committee. "I believe in informed consent," Caplan said in an interview. "Let's have an independent set of scientists look at this and let everyone hear the arguments." Citing the "greater concern for global health", the letter also said, "The Brazilian strain of Zika virus harms health in ways that science has not observed
harms health in ways that science has not observed before." The WHO noted that Brazil has been the epicentre of the virus and one of almost 60 countries that have reported continuing transmission of Zika by mosquitoes, CNN reported. "People continue to travel between these countries and territories for a variety of reasons. The best way to reduce risk of disease is to follow public health travel advice," the WHO said. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said it has no plans to cancel or postpone the Games. The officials in the letter stated the Zika virus has "more serious medical consequences than previously known" and has worsened in the Rio area despite widespread mosquito treatment programmes. "It is unethical to run the risk," the letter said, adding "It is therefore imperative that WHO conduct a fresh, evidence-based assessment of Zika and the Games, and its recommendations for travellers."
before." Speaking at a lunch at the National Press Club in Washington on Thursday, Frieden said there was no reason to delay the Olympics. He was responding to a paper by a Canadian professor published earlier this month in the Harvard Public Health Review which called for the Games to be canceled or moved because it could speed the spread of Zika. "The risk is not particularly high other than for pregnant women," Frieden said. Zika infection in pregnant women has been shown to be a cause of the birth defect microcephaly and other serious brain abnormalities in babies. The connection between Zika and micro-
cephaly first came to light last fall in Brazil, which has confirmed more than 1,400 cases of microcephaly. Frieden's view is shared by many infectious disease experts. A recent editorial in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal noted that the Zika outbreak has been concentrated in northeastern Brazil, away from Rio. Moreover, it added, the infection-carrying mosquito is not particularly active in August and athletes and spectators are likely to spend their time in places purged of mosquito breeding sites. "Available evidence indicates that for games participants, risk of exposure to Zika virus and subsequent adverse health outcomes will be low," it said.

An appeal to the Hon’ble Reasons for dismal performance of Govt. Schools education Minister of Nagaland
R
ecently I had the privilege of attending a seminar addressed by the Hon’ble Education Minister of Nagaland where he expressed his concerns regarding the attitude prevailing among the general public in regard to opening of schools. He rightly pointed out that the purpose of opening of schools was misconstrued as an avenue for creating jobs and the real objective of providing education has been forgotten. He also frankly shared his concerns on many important issues prevailing in the education department. I was really moved by his in-depth understanding of the affairs of the department and his desire to bring drastic changes in the way of functioning of the department. His concerns about teachers drawing salary without attending work is an important issue that needs to be addressed immediately for the uplift of the children belonging to underprivileged sections of the society. In this regard, he informed that the state government has taken a decision to revisit paying salary in cash to teachers in posting areas instead of crediting to their respective accounts. Of course we could not find any fault with the intention of the Govt. in this regard. But the consequences of this decision will badly affect most of the teachers who work sincerely for the department. Everyone knows well that teachers have no other avenues of earning other than their monthly salary. Majority of them depends on Bank Loans for meeting most of the major expenses in life such as Children’s Education, Construction of Home, Purchasing of Cars and other items required for main-

Nadal pull-out stuns French Rashford's dream debut boosts Euro bid Open but show goes on
PARIS, MAy 28 (REUtERS): Rafael Nadal went down fighting on his favourite battleground a year ago but this time his quest for an unprecedented 10th French Open title ended sitting glumly in front of a microphone. With third-round action in full swing out on the Roland Garros claycourts, Nadal dropped a bombshell midway though a sunny afternoon when he announced he was withdrawing because of an injury to his left wrist. For one of the game's fiercest fighters, it was a lame way to go -- especially after he had dropped only nine games in reaching the third round where he had been due to play compatriot Marcel Granollers on Saturday. The Spaniard's hastily convened news conference which caught everyone on the hop cast a pall over the tournament, especially after 17-times grand slam champion and 2009 French winner Roger Federer withdrew last week due to a back injury. C M Y K
There was still some notable action on Friday, however, as seeded players began colliding. Me n ' s d e f e n d i ng champion Stan Wawrinka eased into the last 16 by beating Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-4 6-3 7-5, second seed Andy Murray defused Ivo Karlovic's rocket serve and home favourite Richard Gasquet had fans on Philippe Chatrier Court drooling as he took out Australian maverick Nick Kyrgios. Agnieszka Radwanska, the women's second seed, and Spain's fourth seed Garbine Muguruza also advanced in the sunshine as did Australian Sam Stosur who beat 2015 runnerup Lucie Safarova to set up a match with another former finalist Simona Halep. Ordinarily, 10th seed and twice Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova's shock 6-0 6-7(3) 6-0 defeat by 108th-ranked American Shelby Rogers would have reverberated. But everything was overshadowed by Nadal's wrist.
Explaining the problem, he said an injury that first flared up in Madrid a few weeks ago had returned with a vengeance and that soldiering on could risk snapping a tendon. "I'm here to announce that I have to retire from the tournament because I have a problem in my wrist that I have had a couple of weeks," Nadal, 30 next week, told a room packed with nonplussed reporters. "Yesterday evening I started to feel more and more pain and today I felt I could not move my wrist. "To win the title I need five more matches. The doctor says that's 100 percent impossible." "Nine times in my career I have been able to be healthy here and to win this tournament, now is a tough moment, but is not the end," said Nadal, who pulled out of Wimbledon in 2009 and the London 2012 Olympics with wellchronicled knee injuries. "Life goes on. The world isn't going to stop," he added.
Cavs beat Raptors to reach NBA finals
NEw yORk, MAy 28 (AFP): LeBron James scored 33 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers booked their place in the NBA finals with a 113-87 victory over the Toronto Raptors. James contributed six assists and 11 rebounds as the Cavs completed a 4-2 series victory to advance to the finals for a second year running. The Cavaliers will face either the Golden State Warriors or the Oklahoma City Thunder in next week's finals. Oklahoma City currently lead the Western Conference series 3-2 ahead of Game Six on Saturday. James will be playing in the NBA finals for the sixth straight year. The Cleveland star reached the finals for four years in a row with the Miami Heat before returning to Cleveland in 2014. "We've had our ups and downs. But take nothing away from what we've done
-- our guys are unbelievable, our coaching staff are unbelievable," James said. The Cavaliers had taken a 2-0 lead in the bestof-seven series against Toronto before being jolted by back-to-back defeats as the Raptors leveled at 2-2. But Cleveland reasserted their superiority on Wednesday to regain the initiative with a win in Game Five before ramming home their advantage to silence the home crowd in Toronto on Friday. It was James's first 30-point game of the 2015 postseason, with the Cavaliers also benefiting from big contributions from Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love. Irving finished with 30 points with Love adding 20 as well as 12 rebounds and four assists. Toronto meanwhile brought the curtain down on their first ever appearance in the Eastern Conference finals with a 35-point
display from Kyle Lowry, while DeMar DeRozan added 20 points. James is looking forward to having Irving and Love firing on all cylinders after the bitter memory of last season, when both players missed the bulk of the NBA finals against Golden State with injuries. "I'm so proud of those two guys," James said. "They worked their tails off through adversity to get back. Big-time performances and big-time leadership from those two guys and I'm happy to be a part of it." Cavs coach Lue meanwhile said he was looking forward to challenging in the finals with a full complement of players. "Getting back to the championship with everybody healthy, it's our chance to really show what we can do," Lue said. "I think we're going to be ready to do what we're supposed to do."
SUNdERlANd, MAy 28 (AFP): Marcus Rashford made a bold claim for a place at Euro 2016 as the Manchester United sensation took just 135 seconds to became the youngest player to score on his England debut in Friday's 2-1 win against Australia. Rashford's meteoric rise hit new heights when the teenage striker opened the scoring in the Euro 2016 warm-up with a clinical volley at the Stadium of Light. No player of such a tender age had ever found the net on his England bow and at the age of 18 years and 209 days, Rashford is behind only former Liverpool star Michael Owen (18 years and 164 days) and United captain Wayne Rooney (17 years 317 days) in the list of the youngest scorers in an England shirt. Rashford has less than a season's worth of experience, but England manager Roy Hodgson now has strong evidence he is already worthy of featuring at the European Championships. Rooney came off the bench to score England's second after the interval before Australia got one back through Eric Dier's own goal. But, while Rashford shone, there was concern over United defender Chris Smalling, who limped off in the second half. Just 92 days ago, Rashford was an unknown yet to play a professional game as he strove to emerge from the youth ranks at Old Trafford. But he has seized his chance in remarkable fashion, scoring eight goals in 18 United appearances and helping the team win the FA Cup. With Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge sidelined with a calf problem, Rashford was

Messi scare as Argentina down Honduras
BUENOS AIRES, MAy 28 (AP): Argentine soccer superstar Lionel Messi left the field with a back injury in the second half of a 1-0 victory over Honduras in a friendly Friday night. The Argentine team captain and Barcelona star was hit on an apparently inconsequential play and immediately went to the locker room. He was replaced at the 62-minute mark by Sevilla midfieldselected as the 10th youngest player in England history and any thoughts he might be fazed by the latest step in his fairytale career were erased in the third minute. Receiving possession 25 yards from goal, Rashford moved the ball onto Raheem Sterling before advancing into the penalty area. When Sterling's cross deflected off Bailey Wright and looped high into the air, Rashford adjusted his stride and hit a close-range volley that flashed un-
er Ever Banega and never returned to the field. ''Messi suffered a trauma to the left side of his lower back and rib cage,'' the Argentine Football (Soccer) Association said in a statement, adding that doctors were looking at the injury. der Australia goalkeeper Mathew Ryan. Rashford's bashful expression as he emerged from a huddle of his jubilant team-mates gave the impression his historic strike was nothing out of the ordinary for a kid who grew up in the modest Manchester suburb of Wythenshawe. In contrast, Rooney, watching from the bench, was beaming from ear to ear and the comparisons between the United striker
''I would not dare to venture a diagnosis,'' said a concerned Argentine manager, Gerardo Martino. Gonzalo Higuain, who scored for Argentina, said it ''was an important win and here's hoping that what happened to Leo is nothing.'' Messi was scheduled to fly to Spain to resolve a tax issue and then rejoin the team in Santa Clara, California.
and his young protégé will continue to grow. Yet the teenager remains understandably raw and wasted a chance for a second goal with a poor first touch after Sterling's pass picked him out. England, at times sloppy in defence and careless in possession, weren't flawless either. But Rooney and James Milner came on for Lallana and Wilshere at half-time to restore order and the captain netted in the 55th
minute. Sterling rampaged down the left and picked out Rooney, who lashed a blistering finish into the roof of the net from the edge of the area for his 52nd international goal. Rashford departed to a standing ovation in the 63rd minute before Australia reduced the deficit 12 minutes later. Tottenham's Dier dived to clear Alex Wilkinson's cross but instead headed the ball into his own net.
