left unattended by government: Yitachu: bring formula Villagers repair stretch of nH 702D other than ‘bifurcation’ Deliberation held on ANSTA, NSSFOF agitation
Three villages of Chungtia, Aliba and Kinunger come together in camaraderie-ship to repair 35 kilometers of MkgMariani Road
Manipur editors to resist NIA demands
Morung Express News
IMPHAL, MAY 28 (IANS): Newspaper editors in Manipur on Saturday decided not to yield to pressure from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) which has demanded they share source of underground press releases and other details which will lead to the location of the computer used by insurgents to emailing these. The NIA demands became stronger in wake of the claim by the Corcom taking responsibility about the ambush of a convoy of 29 Assam Rifles in the border area where six personnel were killed and 7 others wounded by the insurgents. An emergency meeting of the Editors’ Guild Manipur (EGM) was held on Saturday to discuss the letter from the NIA asking the editor of mass circulation vernacular newspaper, The Poknapham and its sister publication, People’s Chronicle, to hand over the copies of publicity materials in connection with the claim for the May 22 ambush. Robindro Sharma, editor of The Poknapham told IANS that the meeting decided to furnish the materials as far as possible but certain sensitive materials including those concerning the editorial sanctity shall never be handed over to the NIA or any authority.
Exactly 1135 men from three villages situated along the National Highway 702D, popularly known as Mokokchung-Mariani Road, volunteered to repair a stretch of the highway today after realizing that the government was not likely to repair the depilated road any time soon. The second busiest highway in Nagaland and the lifeline for at least three major districts: namely Mokokchung, Tuensang and Zunheboto, the Mokokchung-Mariani road has remained unattended with none of the government agencies looking its way. In 2015, NH 702D was handed over to the National Highways ministry by the Border Roads Organization (BRO). While the state National Highways department in the district claims that there are “no work assignment from the government” concerning the said road, the BRO maintains that they no longer are responsible for the road’s maintenance. The three villages Chungtia, Aliba and Kinunger – in 2014 also voluntarily repaired the road. On Saturday, the three villages in the same camaraderie-ship, under the

initiatives of a 15-member “well-wishers committee” came together to repair the road. While those residing in the villages started the day by repairing the road starting from Longjongkong (New Camp), citizens from the villages residing in Mokokchung town started their day from IOC Junction with Mekuli junction as the converging point for the two parties. The volunteers were seen carrying boulders, filling potholes, digging earth and clearing drainages all along the 35-kilometer stretch. Imchawati Kichu, convener of the “well-wishers committee” expressed gratitude to all the volunteers for showing up today. He also thanked the village councils and town unions of the three villages for their all-out cooperation and undertaking. He also thanked the village councils of Khensa and Mekuli for their sup-
port. Several Mokokchung based organizations including the Ao Senden, AKM and MCCI as well as the district administration visited the volunteers and extended monetary contributions. Imchawati also told media persons that earlier in February; they had met the BRO and then the state Highways department requesting them to repair the road, however, expressed regret that their requests were not responded positively. “We therefore decided to repair the road themselves “instead of imposing bandhs,” he maintained. Imchawati also hoped that the other villages situated along the highways would also follow suit and repair the road without waiting for the government to repair it. He also requested the authorities that the “standing order” that prohibits a truck from carrying more than 10 tonnes on this high-
way be strictly implemented. The departments concerned should also at least ensure timely assistance in clearing the landslides that are common during rainy season, he further appealed. In a note of gratitude, the Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce and Industries (MCCI), on behalf of the business community of Mokokchung, Tuensang and Zunheboto conveyed its sincerest appreciation to the three villages for volunteering in repairing 35 kilometers of the all-important Mokokchung-Mariani road starting from IOC Junction to New Camp today. “It is our hope and dream that this exemplary initiative heralds a people’s good roads movement in the region. This road is the lifeline for not just Mokokchung but also of Tuensang and Zunheboto and is of paramount economic importance for these districts,” the press note stated.

It is a benefit to the entrepreneurs,” she said. Bambi Kevichusa, designer and owner of ‘Windfall’ summed the significance of the event perfectly, “It’s a big encouragement to us to manufacture more. It’s so beautiful to walk around here, everything is made in Nagaland. I wish we had more events like this.” Bakers like Pastor Bryan, Iliang Haralu, Pito Kiba, Anen Imti

Meanwhile, as far as the agriculture community is concerned, Zatara Pvt Ltd is also keen to include the farmers’ community thus creating a bigger platform in the Makers Market.” Sundown as the stall owners started to pack up and rolled up their tents, weary but satisfied shoppers stayed back to enjoy the “Rough Road Sessions” an evening of good music and food, before heading home with their bag of goodies with the tags ‘Made in Nagaland.’ More photos on Page 11
A deliberation on the agitation and demand of All Nagaland School Teachers Association (ANSTA) and Nagaland Secondary Schools Field Officers’ Federation (NSSFOF) for bifurcation of Higher Secondary from the Secondary and Elementary education was held on Saturday at de Oriental Grande, Kohima. The discussion was held among representatives from Nagaland School Education Administration Officers Association (NSEAOA); All Nagaland Hindi Teachers’ Union (ANHTU), Nagaland Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan Teachers Association 2013 (NRMSATA), Nagaland Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Teachers’ Association (NSSATA), All Nagaland Physical Education Teachers Association (ANPETA), All Nagaland Graduate Primary Teachers’ Association (ANGPTA) and Nagaland Government Higher Secondary School Employees’ Association (NGHSSEA) in the presence of Yitachu, Minister for School Education & SCERT, FP Solo, Commissioner and Secretary and other officers of the Department of School Education. “No school should stand alone. Just to bifurcate Class 11 and 12 is not possible. If you have another formula, bring it to me,” Yitachu stated while expressing hope that better solution to this approach would be brought in. Discussing on the various complications in the Department of School Education, Yitachu gave a brief background of education provided in the past in Nagaland and its evolvement to the present day. Yitachu said in the past, many of the teachers had passed only elementary or middle school, but were made to teach in schools. However, in the present, the Minister for School Education noted that most of the teachers are graduates. “That is the kind of backgrounds our education system has been brought into. We have to know where our root is,” Yitachu explained. Hoping that ANSTA will suspend their agitation, Yitachu reiterated that bifurcating the two cadres will go against the interest of the students and the educational institutions and it will cost the State exche-
quer dearly. Commissioner and Secretary, School Education FP Solo appealing to the rest of the teachers to give their extra effort in the midst of agitation said, “We must keep our schools running for the sake of the children.” Wonthungo Tsopoe, Additional Director (HoD), School Education said any issue should be discussed thoroughly before taking any action or decision. “Bifurcation cannot take place overnight. We need to analyse. The time is not right,” Tsopoe stated. According to him, for 52 years, the department has taken many steps without proper analysis. “That is why we are in a mess. It has been an accumulated problem that we have to solve one after another,” asserted Tsopoe while urging all the associations to work together to bring improvements and progress in the department. The meeting also highlighted on the neglect of teachers of various categories in the Education department such as the Hindi teachers, Physical Education teachers, Vocational teachers, Primary teachers etc. “Majority of the teachers are primary teachers but in most of our discourses and deliberations we don’t talk about them,” highlightedSolo.Hepointedoutthatprimary teachers are an important segment of the departmentandthesocietybecausetheyarethe mainbuildersofthefoundationofthesociety. “The students are the victims here,” said a representative of ANPETA who expressed the need for the ANSTA and NSSFOF to call off the agitation. A representative of the ANHTU said the issue does not take the voice of Hindi teachers into account. Representatives of ANSTA and NSSFOF who are agitating were not present in the deliberation.
