Rev. Yankey Patton (91) frantically searches every pocket of his embellished Naga coat. The search gives way to a small leather pouch with a date embossed in white ink—14.08.1956. A small smooth semi-white stone emerges from the pouch, neatly fitting into his palm. “On that day, the first president of the Nagaland Federal Government, Baba Khrisanisa (Seyie), unfurled the flag and this stone fell on my head!” said Rev. Patton, gesturing with his hand how the stone fell from the unfurling flag and bounced off head. It is clearly his most treasured possession—“it was a miracle!” The first Chaplain of the Federal Government, Rev. Patton wept as he prayed at the inauguration of the Naga Archives & Research Centre (NARC) at Toulazouma today. Established in 2012, the Archives attempt to congregate and keep alive the history of the Naga peoples’ struggle for their aspirations—like a metaphorical collection of smooth semi-white stones that constitute the Naga national struggle. The NARC monolith was unveiled by Tokheho Yepthomi, Nagaland State minister for PHED. “To this day, the Nagas have not shown enough tribute and gratefulness to those lives that had gone into the making of the very foundation on which we stand,” noted Rev. Dr. VK Nuh, the chairperson of the NARC, in his welcome address at the inauguration. In support of the initiative were the neighbours of the

Naga people, the Meitei and Asom. The presence of thinkers and scholars like Dr. Lokendra Arambam, professor of history at Manipur University and his colleagues, as well as Dr. Parag Thakur, vice president of the Asom Sahitya Sabha and his colleagues added “immense significance to the fledgling attempt we are making to preserve some collected documents of our history, and more importantly to live as loving neighbours,” said Rev. Nuh. Naga elder, Niketu Iralu, described the presence of “our two closest neighbours” as a “highly valued gesture of friendship and goodwill.” Meanwhile, thanking the “Naga civil component,” Rev. Nuh expressed indebtedness to Naga political groups for “creating a meaningful history and setting the foundation for Naga nationhood and per-

sisting with it.” “We regard this inaugural function today as a humble but serious attempt to pass on ‘a legacy of hope’ from the meagre progress made thus far to the coming generations. It represents our assessment of ourselves, and our determination to learn to go forward with others as we should,” said Niketu Iralu while presenting a ‘tribute to our people.’ As a symbolic gesture, Naga elders handed over historic documents—a Legacy of Hope—to the Naga youth. “History is a story of winners but history wakes up in time to tell the truth—this is a part of telling the truth about the journey of our people,” observed the leader of the program, Dr. Visier Sanyu Meyasetsu. DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 7 (MExN): Nagaland Government is once again contemplating the feasibility of setting up ropeway service in Kohima to ease traffic congestion. This time with aide from the French. According to Media Cell, CMO, modalities are being worked out to ease the infernal problem of traffic jams in the capital town for which the Chief Minister TR Zeliang was said to be seriously viewing alternatives to ease the problem. One alternative is the construction of ropeway with the help of the French government, the press statement informed. “I have met the Ambassador of France earlier this year in June at New Delhi and he has been kind enough to depute his assistant Jean René Cougard and his team to Nagaland the other day. We have discussed with the French delegation possibilities of setting up Ropeways in Kohima,” Zeliang revealed. The chief minister said modalities were being worked out and if the plan can see the light of day, Kohima would see ropeway service from Ministers’ Hill to PHQ and then on to Old Secretariat area to Bayavu, to High School Junction and then on to New Secretariat. “Once implemented I am confident many will chose this mode of travel to reach the offices and thereby ease the traffic congestion. This will not only help commuters but will also lend aesthetic beauty to the Capital city,” he said. Zeliang however went on to add that no concrete agreement has been arrived at as of now, even though the French delegation has agreed in principle to take up the matter if the proposal is found to be viable. The CMO statement also informed that the department of Municipal Affairs is currently working on this project at the cost of more than Rs 400 crore. And as far the French Government is concerned, the quantum of funds required does not seem to be a problem but what they wanted to know was the feasibility of the proposal, the release added. Besides the ropeway service, some other projects that the French delegation expressed keen interest in were solar power generation, pig breeding (Artificial Insemination) cum slaughter houses and sustainable development. Another round of talk is scheduled to be held later this month either at New Delhi or here in Nagaland, the press statement from CMO further informed. It may be recalled that during 2011, the

State government had announced setting up of an ambitious ropeway service with a project called the ‘Kohima metro cable.’ The project was to be implemented under the initiative of Nagaland State Transport (NST) and cable work was to be carried out by a New Delhi-based company, Leading Edge Adventures and Airparks Pvt Ltd. The then minister for urban development, Dr Shurhozelie Liezietsu had maintained at that point of time that feasibility studies have been carried out and the company has submitted a proposal to the government. However, the project has not seen the light of day so far. ‘Citizens have greater role to play’ Meanwhile, Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang issued a clarion call to the citizens of Kohima town for cooperation so that Kohima can be adopted as one of the experimental Smart Cities by the Government of India (GoI). According to Media Cell, CMO, Zeliang said this during an interaction with a group of government officials at his residence in Dimapur. He maintained that the citizens have as much a role to play, if not greater, as the government to ensure that the GoI selects Kohima as one of the Smart Cities in the first phase. It may be mentioned that the GoI has decided to select 20 cities throughout the country for the futuristic program of Smart City initiative. Appreciating the decision of Kohima Village Council to extend full cooperation to the government to develop the capital city, Zeliang said people should come forward with such positive attitude. “The government alone cannot bring all-round development without the wholehearted support and cooperation of the public,” he added. The chief minister also explained about the plans to install about 200 closed-circuit televisions in Kohima and about 300 CCTVs in Dimapur for which the DGP was working on the proposal. “We hope to be one step ahead of criminals and with the installation of these CCTVs in strategic locations we can not only track and locate known criminals; we hopefully can even prevent crimes from taking place,” he pointed out. In this regard, Zeliang stressed on the need for building owners to cooperate with law enforcing agencies while the CCTVs are being installed, adding they should not object to the installations since it will be in the interest of ever one.

DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 7 (MExN): All Nagaland Aggrieved Hindi Teacher’s Association (ANAHTA) informed on Saturday that it will suspend its agitation from November 10 onwards following an assurance given by the Department of School Education. A press note from the Association said the agitating teachers have decided to resume normal classes after the department assured them that their pending salaries of five (5) month would be released within a week. Whatever we have achieved today is only because of this movement... in the end, the truth will win and the truth is with the Nagas.”

and politicians, even economists are keeping their fingers crossed PATNA, NOVEMBER 7 (AGENCIES): Counting of votes in the high-stakes close-to-call Bihar assembly elections, billed as a hot battle between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, will take place on Sunday. The counting for the 243 seats of the assembly will begin at 8.00 am and the verdict for a majority of seats is expected by the early afternoon. The results of the Bihar poll battle will make or mar political careers. The national politics may also witness a realignment of political forces against the current dispensation. Most of the exit polls have predicted a close contest between the BJP-led NDA and the grand alliance of JD (U)-RJD-Congress with a slight edge to the Chief Minister

Nitish Kumar-led grouping. Not just political analysts, economy watchers in India and abroad too are keenly watching the outcome of the Bihar assembly polls. Reason: Most economists expect the poll outcome to influence the future course of the NDA-government with respect to the economic and industrial reforms in the country. BJP’s weak position in Rajya Sabha has paved major hurdles for the party so far to push key reform bills, despite having clear majority in Lok Sabha. To be sure, a victory will offer the much needed impetus to the NDA-government to carry on with critical reforms, as it strives to improve its position in Rajya Sabha at least in the next two years. A win for the saffron alliance will also help BJP shake off the opposition attack on it over the “climate of intolerance” and embolden it to push its agenda ahead of the Winter Session of Parliament. However, a loss for it will reinvigorate the opposition ranks and help Kumar acquire a key role in national politics.

Nagaland Governor, PB Acharya, has underscored the need to add skills to education to address the serious issue of growing unemployment of educated youths in the country and Nagaland state. The Governor said unlike in the West, most of the youths in the country fail to get jobs after getting their degrees as the conventional education system comprising 85 % educational institutions in the country has not equipped them with any skills, which the market and industry can absorb. Acharya said there is an urgent need for dialogue between educational institutions, industry and other stakeholders on how to empower the vast army of educated youths with skills and expertises. Towards this end, tech-

nical institutions have a greater responsibility in taking skills to other conventional education institutions. The Governor was speaking at the closing ceremony of the 4-day ‘Techaura 15” festival organized by School of Technology and School of Management Studies (SETAM), Nagaland University, here at SETAM complex on Saturday. Acharya said Nagaland is in a way fortunate as the ratio of educational institutions to population is quite high compared to many other states. Taking this into account, he said the cries of the Eastern Nagas for easier access to education and infrastructure should be duly noted. Reiterating that education is the main agent to propel development and progress of society and nation, the governor said ed-

ucation should not be pursued merely for the sake of getting a degree or certificate but as an instrument to transform society and bring progressive changes in lives of every citizen. Terming the North East Region as full of potential populated by colourful communities with distinct vibrant culture, the governor said if India is to become an economic giant, then the NER is the gateway. Quoting Prime Minister Narandra Modi, the governor said, “Unless NER develops, India cannot progress.” Acharya further said the rich and colourful cultures of the people of North East have to be showcased to the rest of the country and the world. Guest of honour, Dean SASRD, Prof. Aleminla Ao, in her address said though Nagaland the “Land of festivals” has tribals festivals throughout the year, the “Techaura” is the only technical festival in the state. She said the technical festival should not be celebrated only in name but should be “felt and applied” in practical. In the face of the rapidly changing world due to technology, the dean SASRD said with regard to application of technology in Nagaland, the guiding principle should be “think globally, act locally.” Earlier, dean, SETAM, DP Chaturvedi, delivered the welcome address HoD, ECE department, SETAM, Bendangchila Longkumer, also highlighted the activities of the institute.

First Wancho film hits bullseye at IFFI Guwahati, November 7 (tNN): Elated with the selection of his maiden venture 'The Head Hunter' for the Indian Panorama section of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), 2015, Goa, Mumbai-based filmmaker from Assam Nilanjan Datta vowed to make more films on the northeast. The film also happens to be the first in the Wancho language of Arunachal Pradesh. "It's obviously great to be selected for the Indian Panorama. This is what I wanted to do since I decided to be a filmmaker. I spent my childhood and some parts of my youth in the northeast and I wanted to project the issues and stories of the region," Datta, an associate professor of film editing at Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, told TOI. The 109-minute film was shot in Nameri in Sonitpur district of Assam and in Tawang and Dirang of Arunachal Pradesh. The film is about an en-

counter with one's past. "I was in Arunachal Pradesh during Classes XI and XII and I was fascinated by the people around me and the tales of the land. I could make the film after eight long years of planning. I think we, the filmmakers who are from the region, have to highlight subjects of the region. Not just insurgency, there are plenty of other things to show to the world," Datta added. The film features actors from the region, including debutant Apu Noksasaham who plays the protagonist. "It was quite interesting to work in the Wancho language. I had to practise the language before the shooting. I met two girls from Arunachal at Mumbai airport and they helped me learn the language. I used to sit with them during their breaks and practise speaking the language. When the shooting was on, even the locals were helpful," said Mrigendra Konwar, one of the leading actors of the film.

"There will be no change in retail prices of petrol and diesel for now," a top oil company official said. "We are not passing on the excise duty

The process of growing in identity apart from your gift

“P

Peter Mattis

rocess” is an idea that always seems to be tagged on to thoughts of journeying through long seasons in dry deserts while alone and waiting on God. It can be a trendy buzzword that we throw around a lot as worship leaders and creatives. But in all honesty, we are more likely to shudder at the very thought of it rather than truly walking it out. When I first came to Bethel for the School of Supernatural Ministry I had very grandiose aspirations of becoming the next great worship leader that would change the world. Tryouts for worship team came along and I heard the voice of the Father clearer than ever invite me into a season of resting and not leading. My world would end! Dramatically distraught after a week of very choice words and wrestling with the Lord, I accepted the invitation. For truly the Father works by invitation, never demanding, and only inviting with open hand. “Do you trust Me?” Over the next year I would always want to be in the front for worship- singing, jumping and sweating it out with the best of them. But as I crept toward the back of the room and literally ended up facing the wall, I would feel the pleasure of God so close – “is this not enough?” I watched my identity as Peter “the worship leader” was stripped away. I had to disengage all distractions to see what He was doing. And ever so slowly, Peter “the son” began to permeate my heart. Before anything else we are sons and daughters of a proud Father. Your value is so much more than your gift. “Process is… a divine adventure into the depths of seeing who we are as we see who He really is.” The nature of process is that you usually

do not see that you are even in a process until you are out of it. Counterproductive? Maybe. But the Holy Spirit is not afraid of my unknown and I think it is the beautiful scheming of the Lord to set us up to receive what our heart wants as well as what it needs. Process is less of an arduous journey and more of a divine adventure into the depths of seeing who we are as we see who He really is. The key is to remain present, fully immersed and captivated by what the Lord is doing not by what you believe Him not to be doing. This past month I had the opportunity to travel to New Zealand after leading worship on a ministry trip in Australia. Everywhere

Scripture passage: Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. Brief note on the passage: Reverential fear of the Lord is the prerequisite of knowledge. The term “fear” means to fear, to reverence, to be afraid, to stand in awe of, to honor or respect. With the Lord as the object, this word captures both aspects of shrinking back in fear and of drawing close in awe. It is not a trembling dread that paralyzes action, but neither is it a polite reverence. "The fear of the LORD" ultimately expresses reverential submission to the Lord's will and thus characterizes a true worshiper. In this context it is the first and controlling principle of knowledge. On the other hand, fools disdain wisdom and discipline. The term "fools" describes those who lack understanding (Proverbs 10:21), fail to attain wisdom (Proverbs 24:7), are filled with pride (Proverbs 26:5), and are contentious (Proverbs 20:3). Fools are people who despise wisdom and discipline; they treat these virtues as worthless and contemptible. What does it mean to fear the Lord? When we think of fear, we associate the word with terror. But this is not the sensation the writer of Proverbs is referring to. What the writer of this book is saying is that we are to have a deep reverence and respect for the Lord. Literally, we are to be awed and humbled by His presence. When we truly fear the Lord, we will recognize that He is the Creator and we are the creatures. He is the Master and we are the servants. He is the Father and we are the children. To put it simply, the fear of the Lord is a deep seated reverence for God that causes men to want to please Him at all costs. Genuine fear of the Lord is always seen in obedience to the Word of God. People who do not walk in line with God's Word do not fear the Lord, regardless of what they profess with their lips. Therefore, when we fear the Lord, there is an element of dread at what His wrath can do, but there is also such a respect for Him and for His will that nothing else matters but doing that which pleases the Lord.

Now, my photos only reflected the summit top views and breathtaking picturesque scenery. They did not show the amount of sheep poop, mud pits and rock walls we had to navigate to get to the top nor the sweat stains of my shirt or aching body and throbbing legs. But the hike, like a journeying process, is the gift of being with Jesus through every step and climb. And that is my enough. “But the hike, like a journeying process, is the gift of being

The fear of the Lord Selie Visa and instruction." Proverbs 9:10 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding." The best place to begin the search for true wisdom is in the fear of the Lord. True fear of the Lord is born out of knowledge of how infinitely powerful, how majestic and how full of goodness God is. Before one can grow in the Lord, he must first learn to fear Him. B) It motivates people to holiness Proverbs 16:6 "By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil." The fear of the Lord promotes holy living. The person who truly reverences and respects the Lord will not do anything that brings disgrace, dishonor or pain to the heart of the Lord. People who genuinely fear the Lord will flee from evil.

C) It prolongs life Proverbs 10:27 "The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened." Many things can happen along the road of life and take us out of here in an instant. However, generally speaking, those who live in the fear of the Lord are more likely to live to a good old age than those who live for the flesh and the world. Approximately 60% of human illnesses can be traced directly or indirectly to fear, sorrow, envy, resentment, guilt, hatred, or to any number of emotional stresses. Add to that the awful pain caused by alcohol (cirrhosis of the liver), tobacco, (cancer, heart disease), and immorality, (venereal diseases and AIDS). onster churches” in reference to congregations that chew up and spit out pastors on a regular basis, are highly dysfunctional and rarely fruitful. The congregation, however, is not always the problem. Just as monster churches are a factory of discord, monster pastors take trouble with them wherever they go. Nicknames for monster pastors include: dictator, authoritarian and control freak. Biblically speaking, they may be false teachers, greedy for selfish gain, deceitful workmen and ravenous wolves. They specialize in hijacking congregations then abusing power. Monster pastors have little regard for the sheep (or the Chief Shepherd for that matter). Instead, their first priority is self, masked by other agendas. Such pastors may use pressure tactics, political maneuvering and/or persuasive speech in order to manipulate a congregation into acting on their behalf. When they don’t get their way, monster pastors usually 1) move on to another church, 2) cause a stir in their current church and/

Many sacrificed the comforts of the easy path to accept the invitation and choose the path less traveled. Jesus spent 30 years feasting on the Father’s voice before He ever did a thing in ministry. David was anointed King and went straight back to herding dirty sheep in an unknown field years before even seeing Jerusalem. The Israelites entered the Promise Land but did not even occupy it fully until a generation later.

can have confidence that God is on our side. The person who is walking in the fear of the Lord and is living by the Book will have fewer feelings of insecurity, abandonment and fear. There will be far fewer times when salvation is doubted. The fear of the Lord produces a strong sense of security and close fellowship with the Father. This is a blessed benefit! E) It produces life Proverbs 14:27 "The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death." When we walk in the fear of the Lord, we are stronger spiritually than we could be otherwise. The fear of the Lord is like a fountain that continually springs up with spiritual vitality and strength. This enables the Christian to walk cleaner and closer thus avoiding the temptations and traps of the devil. F) It produces satisfaction and safety Proverbs 19:23 "The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil." The person who lives in the fear of God will be a satisfied person. They will have one goal in life, pleasing the Lord. They will not be visited with evil. The person who walks in the genuine fear of the Lord need never fear going to Hell, he need never fear many of the things that beset the world around him. G) It brings great blessings Proverbs 22:4 "By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honor, and life." The person who chooses to walk in the fear of the Lord can rest assured that this decision will bring great blessings into his life. There will be spiritual riches beyond belief, like peace, joy, hope, security, the promises of God, and the presence of God. There will be honor from the Lord, and there will be abundant life. Live in fear of the Lord To fear God is to understand God. We know that God is love and full of mercy, but we also must recognize that God is holy, and by His very nature, must judge sin. To fear the Lord is to trust and believe Him to hear your prayers, to forgive your sins, to help, to provide, and to save. A life lived in the fear of the Lord will tell on you. If you fear Him, then you will want to honor him in everything. He will come first and His will be paramount in your life. Walking continually in the fear of the Lord will cause one to shun evil and flee from sin. May the Lord help us all to walk in a reverential awe of Him, and His greatness and His glory. May His people always be a people who fear the Lord and prove it by living according to His Word!

Leading and Correcting Friends Matt Stinton

W

hen you’re in leadership, it’s inevitable that you will run into some awkward situations and conversations. This is particularly true when you are leading friends and peers. A problem many leaders find themselves facing is not knowing how to actually lead and correct friends. Hopefully, you’ve been able to develop friendships on your team. Nothing feels better than playing with people you have history with, both on and off the stage. However, giving instruction to a friend or speaking into their lives, especially when it’s not initiated by them, doesn’t come naturally to most. But if you’re going to be an effective leader, and honestly, a good friend, then being able to push past the initial discomfort of speaking out is going to be necessary. For a few years, I managed the worship department at Bethel Church in Redding, CA. Over that period of time, I had to have several serious conversations with friends. Conversations about everything from moral failures to ways they weren’t living up to their commitment to the team. I know the inherent tension is a real thing, but I also know the conversations are essential. There are a couple things to keep in mind when having these chats. First things first, start by readjusting your idea of what these interactions look like. Namely, instead of feeling like your friendship makes correction uncomfortable, view it as an advantage. In my opinion, the fact that you have a friendship is a plus. I think most people would agree that it’s easier to follow a friend than a stranger. Personally, I would rather follow someone who knows and loves me than someone who is disconnected from my life. A friend is easier to trust and if they make a mistake in their dealings with me, I am going to be much more gracious in my response toward them. I know they have to wear the “leader” hat and I’m okay with that. All I want to know is that they never take off the “friend” hat. Another important part of these conversations is all in your approach. Always remember to ask questions and never make assumptions. This is really a general rule of healthy communication, but it’s particularly important when communicating with friends. I learned this the hard way the first “correctional” conversation I was a part of. I had just been promoted to a leadership position and was asked confront a friend of mine. I had an idea of the situation at hand but was not fully prepared for the task at hand. Unfortunately for my friend, I ended up rattling off a bunch of statements about their supposed situation and never gave them an opportunity to speak up for themselves. Later, I sat down with the individual one-on-one and they expressed how they had felt attacked and accused by me rather than supported and valued. It was a painful lesson to learn. Fortunately, my friend was very gracious toward me and it did not affect our relationship. The key to making these interactions successful is always keeping the heart of the other person a priority. It doesn’t mean giving everyone what they want all the time. Often it means that the other person won’t agree with your decisions at all but disagreement does not mean you’re being a bad friend or leader. Clear communication and seeking to understand the other person should be your goal. Successfully doing these things will prevent wounds and maintain friendships. If you don’t feel prepared for these conversations, seek advice from your pastor or someone who can offer wisdom and sound counsel. Just because you’re a leader doesn’t mean you have to have all the answers. Nor does it mean that you should be isolated. Part of being a good leader is knowing when to ask for help. Always stay open for feedback and give yourself grace to learn and grow since leadership can definitely have a steep learning curve. A final encouragement for you is to remember that if you’ve been put in a position of authority, then you have been given the right to speak into the lives of those who follow you. Also, by joining your team, your team members have agreed to submit to your leadership. You are qualified by position. You’ve got this.

Modi pledges 800 billion rupees in relief and development for Kashmir SRINAGAR, NovembeR 7 (ReuteRS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged 800 billion rupees ($12.10 billion) in funds to bolster development and economic growth in Kashmir, a year after the worst flooding in more than a century destroyed half a million homes there. Addressing several thousand people in a cricket stadium in the northern state's capital of Srinagar, Modi said he wanted to go beyond helping flood victims. He promised to create jobs for Kashmiri youth by improving education and promoting industries, including tourism and cashmere wool. "The biggest task at hand here is to find work for the youth of Kashmir and Ladakh ... our youth should get the cheapest and the best education, and of global standards," he said. Ladakh is another mountainous region in the north. Saturday's visit is Modi's first this year to the disputed territory which has been plagued by militant violence for years. Nuclear-

armed rivals India and Pakistan both claim Kashmir in full but rule it in part. Violence in India's only Muslim-majority region has eased significantly from levels in the 1990s, when armed revolt against Indian rule erupted. Kashmiris have been protesting against a lack of central aid for last year's floods that the state government estimates caused $16 billion of damage. Security forces in Kashmir detained nearly 400 separatists on Friday to prevent them from holding an anti-government protest march during Modi's visit. Hours before Modi's rally, in footage screened on national television, police detained an independent parliamentarian, Engineer Rashid, for protesting with black flags. Security was tight with paramilitary forces and sharpshooters deployed, while schools and colleges were shut. Internet services were suspended hours before Modi arrived. In his 40-minute

ChANdeRkote (JAmmu), NovembeR 7 (PtI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said "honourable" rehabilitation of the West Pakistan refugees and Kashmiri pandits who migrated from the Valley is the most important task for his government. While inaugurating the phase-II of the Baglihar power project here, Modi said the package of Rs 80,000 crore announced in Srinagar for the state will address "all problems" faced by the state. "There are lakhs for refugees since 1947 here...and about 15-20 per cent population of the state is displaced. This is not a small pain but a huge distress. It is high time that the 1947 refugees and displaced Kashmiri Pandits are provided an honourable come back to home. "All problems faced by the state, including the migrants and displaced, will be addressed by this Rs 80,000 crore package announced today," he said. There are nearly 55,000 refugee families who came from West Pakistan in 1947. They have not been given any state subject thereby restricting them from purchasing land and government jobs in the state. However, the NDA government has already made a concession of adjusting youths of these families in central para-military forces. The number of Kashmiri pandit families is around 59,000 who had to leave the Valley in 1990 in the wake of militancy. believed we would be able to rebuild so quickly." forces in Indian Kashmir. Pakistan denies that saying it only offers diplomatic support to Kashmir's suppressed Muslims.

New delhI, NovembeR 7 (IANS): Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday accused the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) of destroying liberal and secular India. Taking a dig at the ruling BJP and its ideological mentor RSS during a valedictory speech at a national conference on "No peace without freedom, No freedom without peace: Securing Nehru's vision and India's future" to celebrate of the 125th birth anniversary of former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Rahul Gandhi said for the first time a fascist organisation has achieved decisive power and his party is the "biggest force" fighting it. Referring to the RSS, he

said, a fascist organisation that is openly opposed to the ideology and values of the Indian Constitution has acquired decisive power over the Union of India. Saying that the stated purpose of the RSS is "to establish a theocratic, autocratic state in India", the Congress leader said: "To achieve this goal, it has to destroy the current liberal, progressive, secular, social democratic republic." “Secularism is in the blood of the Congress", Gandhi said: "Respect for everybody is the DNA of our organisation. We just need to reinvigorate that. Then you'll see the Congress idea will smash the RSS and the BJP." The Congress vice president also paid homage to the memory of Dabholkar,

Pansare and Kalburgi, saying they "were martyred for nothing more than their opinions". "We pay homage to Akhlaq and Mohsin Sheikh, who were martyred for being Muslim." Narendra Achyut Dabholkar, who spent much of his life exposing sham rituals, miracles, black magic and godmen, was murdered in 2013. Communist leader Govind Pansare was shot dead in February near his residence in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, on February 16. Kannada scholar and rationalist M.M. Indian Army test-fires BrahMos land-attack missile PokhRAN/New delhI, NovembeR 7 (IANS): The Indian Army on Saturday successfully test fired the BrahMos land-attack cruise missile against a designated target in Rajasthan's Pokhran test range, demonstrating the weapon's operational capability, an official said on Saturday. The test was conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday. "BrahMos missile system, the most lethal and potent weapon system for

precision strike available with the Indian Army, has proved again its effectiveness in today's successful launch," Sudhir Mishra, chief of BrahMos Aerospace, said in a statement. The Indian Army has already inducted three regiments of BrahMos in its arsenal. All are equipped with Block-III version of the missile, which was recently tested on May 8 and 9. The land-attack version of BrahMos has been operationalised in the In-

dian Army since 2007. The fire-andforget BrahMos has the capability to take on surface-based targets by flying a combined hi-lo trajectory, thus evading enemy air defence systems. The BrahMos missile, having a range of 290-km and a Mach 2.8 speed, is capable of being launched from land, sea, sub-sea and air against sea and land targets. BrahMos is a joint venture between DRDO and NPOM of Russia.

New delhI, NovembeR 7 (IANS): Absconding underworld don Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje alias Chhota Rajan, who had fled India in 1988 for Dubai, used three fake passports during his stay in Thailand, Australia and some southeast Asian countries. Rajan got his first fake passport under the name Vijay Kadam in 1996 and went to Bangkok in Thailand and started living there. Official sources said Rajan had been living in Bangkok on the same passport till 2000. That year the associates of fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, his close friend before the 1993 Mumbai blasts conspiracy, attacked him at a hotel. Rajan managed a dramatic escape by jumping from the first floor of the hotel, the sources said. The CBI then got a tipoff through Interpol about the attack on Rajan by Dawood's men. The investigating agency also learned from Interpol about the fake passport being used by Rajan and registered a case in 2002, an official source said. "On the same passport, Rajan travelled to South Africa and some other south-

east Asian countries where he had a strong network." Sources said Rajan feared getting arrested after the attack. He got an Indian passport (No.G9273860) made on the fake name of Mohan Kumar, resident of 107/B, Old MC Road, Azad Nagar, Mandya in Karnataka. "Rajan got the passport from Harare in Zimbabwe." Rajan landed in Australia on September 22, 2003 using the same passport, which was valid till July 7, 2018, and a tourist visa. "Since 2003 to October 25, 2015, Rajan stayed in Australia on the same passport and fraudulently obtained several different visas to reside there. Later, he managed to get Australian residency," sources told IANS. As per sources, the CBI received the information about Rajan's stay in Australia in May 2015 through the Australian Interpol when the agency did a review of major fugitives. Meanwhile, the agency got a tip-off that Rajan's residency permit was expiring on October 31, 2015 and he was trying to get it extended. Rajan told the CBI during interrogation that he decided to go to some other country when

his attempt to get his Australian residency extended failed. "Rajan had chosen four destinations, including Bali, where he was arrested on October 25 just after landing from an Australian flight," said sources. "Rajan landed in the immigration net in Bali when he accidentally revealed his real name. Although the forged documents had his name as Mohan Kumar, he instinctively said Rajendra Nikhalje when he was asked his name," the source claimed. Sources said the Australian Interpol in the meantime had shared information about Rajan with their Indonesian counterparts on the request of Indian Interpol. Indonesian Police arrested Rajan on arrival in Bali as the Indian Interpol had in 1995 issued a Red Corner Notice (RCN) against him. The CBI team left for Bali on October 31 after filing a case against him under the Passport Act 1967. Rajan, who was deported to India on Friday, is now in the CBI's custody for 10 days. Sources said a third fake passport has also been recovered from Rajan's possession but could not give much input citing ongoing investigations as the reason.

Anupam Kher leads march against 'awards wapsi', meets president New delhI, NovembeR 7 (IANS): Veteran actor Anupam Kher led a 'March for India' to protest against the voices being raised over "intolerance" in the country and later called on President Pranab Mukherjee for what he described as a "great meeting" where he raised concerns about the 'award wapsi' by a string of artistes. "We had a great meeting with honourable President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee. He said 'Awards are given by nation not by governments," Kher tweeted after his meeting with Mukherjee at the conclusion of the march from India Gate to the Rashtrapati Bhawan presidential mansion. Kher, who is a BJP supporter, on Saturday morning led a 'March For India' to Rashtrapati Bhavan to protest against the voices being raised over "intolerance" in the country. He was joined by filmmakers Madhur Bhandarkar, Ashoke Pandit, Priyadarshan, actor Manoj Joshi and singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya. Over the past few days, several writers, painters, filmmakers and scientists have returned their awards over fears that the country's democracy might be coming apart. Noted academician Madhu Purnima Kishwar of the Centre for Study of Developing Societies and founder of Manushi,

Intolerance 'new Partition' in progress: Tushar Gandhi

a women's rights journal, was also present at the march. She slammed both Congress and Left parties for bringing shame to the country through the series of 'award wapsi'. "People who are terming the current rule as fascism, do they even know the meaning of it? In India, even if there is one incident of atrocity, the whole country rises in revolt," Kishwar said. She further added that Congress and Left had monopoly over opinions, media, academia, cultural bodies and that monopoly is threatened by social media and also the appointments will not come to them. Nalini of the acclaimed Kathak duo Nalini and Kamalini, also participated in the march and said that such events are the need of the hour.

"It is a must. When people express negative thoughts, it gives a wrong message. The awards given to the artistes, it's an honour bestowed upon them by the country. It is inappropriate to return it. We always say that arts should enter politics, but here politics has entered arts," Nalini said. Lawyer Nupur Sharma, a former ABVP activist, said: "Such award returning actions are ruining India's image on an international level." Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya also took potshots at people returning awards saying that such people who are protesting by returning awards will not be spared. "We are not to leave people (ones who are returning awards) like this. They are anti-nationals. We are proud if we are called Bhakts," he said.

kolkAtA, NovembeR 7 (IANS): The simmering controversy over intolerance in India is not only affecting the nation's image globally but has emerged as a "new Partition in progress", which is splitting the country based on ideological differences, feels Tushar Gandhi, great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. The author and peace activist is concerned not because he is a descendant of the Mahatma, but as a citizen of a democracy which is sliding into a "mobocracy". He not only agrees with those who have likened the current situation to Emergency, Tushar says the hatred is being spread much more effectively. "It (Emergency) was brutal, it was an evil but what is happening today is also an evil. The problem is the venom that is being spread is being spread much more effectively than by the dictatorship that was during Emergency," asserted Tushar, who finds the Narendra Modi-led central government's silence on recent events like the lynch-

ing of a Muslim man in Dadri of Uttar Pradesh over beef, the murder of Kannada rationalist scholar M.M. Kalburgi, "unacceptable". "Even if they were incapable of actually solving the crime they could have made at least an appearance of being disturbed by it but their silence actually emboldened the radical elements." Active on his Twitter handle, Tushar admits he has stopped retaliating to hate comments that his posts against intolerance attract. "In a democracy there can't be a predefined manner of protest... everyone has the right to protest in the manner they dim fit. As much as they have the right to protest, those who feel offended by it also are free to raise their voices but there should be decorum," the columnist said. The recent spate of "award wapasi", which has created a storm across the country with a section from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party dubbing it as damaging for India's image globally, is to Tushar a "dignified and

polite" way to protest. "Those who are criticising them are doing nothing except to demonise them and assassinate their character, question their motives. This in itself reflects the intolerant attitude that is being encouraged... that is becoming the norm of the society," Tushar pointed out. And even though they are being labelled as a "minority", Tushar highlights that in a democracy even one voice of dissent counts. "Democracy is not about a brute majority or mobocracy... we are becoming a mobocrac... and all dissent is being smothered by numbers," he lamented. The RSS, Tushar avers, is an agent of division and "unfortunately they are succeeding much more today than in the past". Most importantly, scathing comments such as "anti-national" and "Pakistani agent" made by BJP and and Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) leaders on superstar Shah Rukh Khan tarnishes India's image of a secular country globally, believed Tushar.

Media heckled at Anupam Kher-led rally New delhI, NovembeR 7 (PtI): Some media persons were heckled by participants in the march organised by actor Anupam Kher to counter the protests by writers and artistes against "rising intolerance" in the country. The 'March For India' rally from National Museum to Rashtrapati Bhavan was also joined by filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, Ashoke Pandit, Priyadarshan, Manoj Joshi, Abhijeet Bhattacharya and writer Madhu Kishwar among others. But the protest turned ugly when

some people started shouting anti-media slogans and heckled the journalists. "A bunch of people were shouting and calling the media biased. They said we practice selective journalism. They heckled us," a reporter from a leading news channel said. The marchers reached Rashtrapati Bhavan to hand over a memorandum signed by more than 90 personalities including actress Vidya Balan, Shekhar Kapoor, Kamal Haasan, Raveena Tandon, to President Pranab Mukherjee.

Criticising people returning their National Award, Kher alleged that the "award-wapsi" campaign was to defame the country by projecting a "wrong" picture of the situation. Xi says China opposes Taiwan independence SINGAPORE, NOvEmbER 7 (REutERS): China and Taiwan must not let proponents of Taiwan’s independence split them, China’s President Xi Jinping told Taiwan’s president on Saturday at the first meeting between leaders of the two sides since China’s civil war ended in 1949. Ma Ying-jeou, president of self-ruled, democratic Taiwan, where antiBeijing sentiment has been rising ahead of elections, called for mutual respect for each other’s systems and said Taiwan people were concerned about mainland missiles pointing their way. The talks, at a luxury hotel in the neutral venue of Singapore, lasted less than an hour but were heavy with symbolism. The two leaders shook hands and smiled in front of a mass of journalists when they met, with Xi wearing a red tie, the colour of the Communist Party, and Ma a blue one, the colour of his Nationalist Party. Moving into a meeting room, Xi, speaking first and sitting opposite Ma, said Chinese people on the two sides of the Taiwan Strait

had the ability and wisdom to solve their own problems. “No force can pull us apart because we are brothers who are still connected by our flesh even if our bones are broken, we are a family in which blood is thicker than water,” Xi said. In response, Ma said he was determined to promote peace across the Taiwan Strait and that relations should be based on sincerity, wisdom and patience. Ma also asked Xi indirectly to respect Taiwan’s democracy. “Both sides should respect each other’s values and way of life to ensure mutual benefit and a win-win situation across the straits,” he said. China’s Nationalists, also known as the Kuomintang (KMT), retreated to Taiwan after losing the civil war to the Communists, who are still in charge in Beijing. The mainland has never renounced the use of force to bring what it considers a breakaway province under its control. Speaking to reporters after the talks, Ma said he hoped Xi could pay attention to China’s missile deployment - the island has long fretted about batteries pointed its way - to which Xi

replied that was not an issue about Taiwan, he said. “I at least raised the issue, and told him that the Taiwanese people have questions and concerns about it, and hope he will treat it with importance,” Ma said. Zhang Zhijun, the head of China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, said Xi told Ma that

ahead of presidential and parliamentary elections on Taiwan which the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is favoured to win, something Beijing is desperate to avoid. Speaking in Taiwan, OPPOSITION DPP leader and presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen DISAPPOINTED The meeting comes said she was disappointed the biggest threat to the peaceful development of relations was pro-independence forces. “The compatriots on both sides should unite and firmly oppose it,” Zhang said.

Ma made no direct mention of Taiwan’s freedom and democracy. “We had expected President Ma to talk about Taiwan’s democracy, freedom and the existence of the Republic of China,” she said, in comments carried on Taiwan television stations, referring to Taiwan’s official name.

“More importantly, the Taiwan people’s right to choose freely. But he did not say a word of that.” While bilateral trade, investment and tourism have blossomed - particularly since Ma and his KMT took power in 2008 - there is deep suspicion on both sides and no progress has been made on any sort of political settlement. No agreements had been expected in what was seen as a highly symbolic get-together in Singapore, a largely ethnic Chinese citystate that has maintained good ties with both for decades. Protocol problems loomed large for democratic Taiwan and autocratic China and the two addressed each other as “mister” to avoid using the word “president”, as neither officially recognises the other as head of state. Further underscoring China’s sensitivities, state television only showed Xi’s comments live, cutting away when Ma began to speak, prompting a flurry of complaints on Chinese social media about censorship. It later showed a recording of Ma’s opening remarks.

as Xi hopes to cement his place among China’s pantheon of great leaders and Ma, stepping down next year due to term limits, tries to shape his legacy marred by growing anti-Beijing feeling in Taiwan. While China is laudatory, concerns have been raised in Taiwan, and on Saturday a few hundred people took to the streets in Taipei to protest against the meeting. “Though he said he won’t sign any agreements there, the Ma-Xi meeting itself shows there will definitely be some discussions or negotiations which have not been approved of by Taiwan’s people,” said protester Sung Yun-chuan. Ma and Xi were due to have dinner together before flying out of Singapore separately. Ma was due to present Xi bottles of spirits made on two groups of islands just off the mainland that have been occupied by Taiwan forces since the end of the civil war. He would also present Xi with a ceramic sculpture of a Taiwan blue magpie perched on a leafy green branch as a gift for their first meeting, a bird unique to the island, Taiwan’s presiTAIWAN PROTESTS The meeting comes dential office said.

With Suu Kyi banned, Myanmar voters ponder "proxy presidents" YANGON, NOvEmbER 7 (REutERS): In a ramshackle hospital in Myanmar's largest city, at the end of a corridor milling with patients, sits the man some people believe will be the country's next president. Tin Myo Win is the longtime personal physician of Aung San Suu Kyi, whose party is expected to win Sunday's landmark general election. That position has earned him a place on a list of presidential candidates, some of them improbable. Even if her National League for Democracy (NLD) wins big, Suu Kyi is barred from the presidency by a constitution written by Myanmar's powerful military. It ruled the country for nearly 50 years before a nominally civilian government ushered in an era of faltering reform in 2011. Suu Kyi vowed on Thursday to run the country from "above the president", filling the position with a proxy she has chosen but not disclosed, a move that could antagonise the military. It has also left Myanmar's voters with a presidential puzzle: If not "Mother Suu", as she is affectionately

al Shwe Mann, now the speaker of the lower house, or the party's ageing patron, Tin Oo.

known, then who? An NLD loyalist and former political prisoner, Tin Myo Win, 64, was one of the few people allowed to visit the Nobel Peace Prize winner during her 15 years as a prisoner of the military. He seemed bemused at the prospect of being considered president. "My job is cutting and sewing - I am a surgeon," he told Reuters between consultations with patients at Yangon's Muslim Free Hospi-

tal, where he volunteers his services. But earlier he told the Irrawaddy, a Myanmar news service, that he would accept any offer of the presidency "for the good of the country." Myanmar's legions of Facebook users have already entertained and dismissed the possibility of Tin Myo Win becoming president. A more likely choice could be former gener-

"SOMETHING LIKE SONIA GANDHI" Even if Sunday's election is deemed free and fair, it will still only elect 75 percent of Myanmar's parliament, where a quarter of all seats are reserved for unelected military officers. On the eve of the election, it is still unclear whether the NLD can win enough votes to form a government and choose its own president, who does not have to be an elected MP. To get there, the NLD on its own or with allies must win more than twothirds of all contested seats. The military-drafted constitution bars presidential and vice-presidential candidates with foreign children. Suu Kyi's two sons are British citizens. She said on Thursday that the constitution "says nothing about somebody being above the president". In fact, it does state that the president "takes precedence over all other persons" in Myanmar. But Suu Kyi could be

"something like Sonia Gandhi," said Win Htein, a top NLD leader and Suu Kyi confidant. Gandhi is the Italian-born widow of the late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. As leader of the Congress party, she dominated the government of former Prime Minister Mahmohan Singh before it fell from power last year. "We'll appoint someone (as president) but he will be controlled by Aung San Suu Kyi," said Win Htein. That proxy president would step down as soon as the constitution was amended to allow Suu Kyi to rule, he added, refusing to say who the NLD had chosen for a job he described as "benchwarmer." The arrangement was necessary due to "the ridiculousness of this constitution," he said. When asked if it would provoke the military, he replied: "It's not a provocation. It's a challenge." Another senior NLD leader struck a more cautious note. Han Tha Myint said any presidential candidate would have to be acceptable to the military, which Undercover Israeli security personnel point their pistols as they move towards Paleshad the power to make any tinian protesters during clashes in the West Bank city of Bethlehem on November 6, government unworkable. 2015. Mudslide flattens Brazil village Russian plane black boxes point to 'attack'

mARIANA, NOvEmbER 7 (AFP): Firefighters rescued 500 survivors Friday from a torrent of mining waste that killed at least 17 people and destroyed a village after two dams burst in southeastern Brazil. They searched frantically for survivors after the mudslide erupted Thursday from waste reservoirs at the partly Australianowned iron ore mine in southeastern Brazil. The torrent ripped the roofs off houses and left villagers clinging to their roofs. "There was a horrible noise and we saw the mud approaching. We ran for it. It is a miracle that we are still alive," said Valeria de Souza, 20, with a baby in her arms and tears in her eyes. The mudslide flattened Bento Rodrigues, a village of some 600 people near the southeastern city of Mariana in the historic mining region of Minas Gerais. De Souza spoke to AFP after arriving at a gymnasium in Mariana, where some 150 survivors from the destroyed village were being housed. There were 17 people officially confirmed killed and 50 injured, "but more bodies have been found," said Adao Severino Junior, the fire chief in Mariana. He warned that more than 40 people could be missing.

PARIS, NOvEmbER 7 (AFP): Black box data from the Russian plane that crashed in Egypt last week indicates it was hit by a bomb, sources said, before an Egypt-led probe into the disaster was set to release its first findings Saturday. Both the flight data and voice recorders failed 24 minutes after the plane took off from the Sharm el-Sheikh resort en route to Saint Petersburg, when it plummeted from the sky into the Sinai Peninsula killing all 224 people on board. Cairo and Moscow initially dismissed a claim Islamic State (IS) jihadists downed the plane, but growing evidence it was attacked has prompted several countries to warn against travel to Sharm elSheikh. On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin also ordered flights to the Red Sea resort halted, in a fresh blow to Egypt's already struggling tourism industry. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told news agencies the measure did not mean Russia believed the crash -the worst aviation disaster in Russia's history -- was due to an attack, and the investigation continued. The head of Russia's emergencies ministry said Russian experts had taken samples from the crashed jet and were testing it for any traces of explosives. But a source close to the investigation told AFP the black box data "strongly favours" the theory a bomb on board brought down the plane. Another person close to the case in Paris said the plane had suffered "a violent, sudden" end, saying: "Everything was normal dur-

Kamal said only eight of 29 flights could take off because the airport could not cope with all the luggage left behind. Russia's Interfax news agency quoted a representative of national carrier Aeroflot saying a plane would be sent Friday to pick up stranded Russians.

ing the flight, absolutely normal, and suddenly there was nothing." Egyptian Aviation Minister Hossam Kamal and the head of the Egypt-led investigation into the disaster are due to hold their first news conference at 1500 GMT on Saturday, although the government warned it could be delayed. 'Security was horrendous' Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's office said he called Putin and they agreed to bolster coordination to "strengthen security measures for Russian planes". With international concerns mounting, European airlines prepared to bring home thousands of tourists from the Red Sea resort, which has been a jewel in Egypt's tourism crown. Denmark on Friday became the latest European country to

warn against travelling to Sharm elSheikh, following France, Belgium and Britain, while several airlines have banned check-in luggage as a precaution. The US said it would also step up security screenings of US-bound flights from some Middle East airports as a precaution. There were angry scenes in Sharm el-Sheikh, as thousands of anxious Britons, who had also hoped to fly home, were sent back to their hotels after Egypt blocked several other repatriation flights. "I think a lot of people will question whether they ever want to go to Egypt again," Emma Turner, a 34-year-old from southeast England, said after arriving back in London. Eight flights carrying some 1,400 travellers returned to Britain on Friday after restrictions were lifted, but tourists were only allowed to bring carry-on bags.

Tourism industry hit IS said it downed the plane in retaliation for Russian air strikes in Syria, but has provided no details as to how. If it was behind the attack, it would be the first time the jihadists, who control large areas of Syria and Iraq, have hit a passenger plane. US President Barack Obama has said that Washington was "seriously" considering the possibility of a bomb aboard the plane, while British premier David Cameron told reporters it was "more likely than not that... a terrorist bomb" caused the crash. Egypt has beefed up security at airports to "give confidence to the British government, but that does not mean we concur with any scenario," foreign ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said. The crash has the potential to deeply damage Egypt's tourism industry, still struggling to recover from a turbulent four years following its 2011 revolution. Once a remote beach on the edge of the Red Sea, Sharm el-Skekh has grown into the jewel of Egypt's tourism industry, with dozens of luxury hotels and night life attracting tourists from around the world. The town attracted on average three to four million tourists a year before the 2011 popular uprising that ousted longtime president Hosni Mubarak.

NorthEast's Simao's penalty downs ATK

KolKata, November 7 (iaNS): It was a seventh minute Simao Sambrosa strike from a penalty which helped NorthEast United down Atletico de Kolkata (ATK) 1-0 in an Indian Super League (ISL) encounter at the Salt Lake stadium here on Saturday. Simao calmly tucked the ball in to give his side the lead. The visitors then held onto the one goal advantage for the rest of the game. After eight outings, NorthEast climb to the seventh spot with 10 points while defending champions Atletico, who have also played eight matches, remain in the fifth place with 10 points but ahead on goal difference.

sis in the very next over. Ashwin unleashed a flighted delivery that straightened after picthing as du Plesis offered an easy catch to the slips. The Indian spinners continued to dominate and the South Africans were in deep trouble when the in-form AB de Villiers went back to the pavilion shortly after skipper Hashim Amla's dismissal. De Villiers was fooled by the variable bounce of the rapidly deteorating wicket when a Mishra delivery kept low after pitching before crashing into the stumps. Opener Dean Elgar was fighting valiantly at the other end. But Aaron finally put an end to his laboured innings with a short pitched delivery that troubled Elgar with its awkward bounce. The South African tried to steer it to the onside, but the ball took the leading edge to spoon up in the air as Kohli grabbed it at mid on. Dane Vilas virtually gifted away his wicket with a horrendous misjudgement as he attempted to leave a Jadeja delivery only to see the ball hit the top of his off-stump. Stiaan van Zyl and Simon Harmer tried to produce a fightback with a 42-run stand but another wickedly spinning delivery from Jadeja put an end to the partnership. Dale Steyn also did not last long as he tried to smash Ashwin out of the park but only managed to find Murali Vijay at long on. An Indian win was only a matter of time from then and Jadeja completed the for-

malities by trapping leg before with a fullish delivery. Earlier in the morning, Harmer and Tahir sliced through the Indian middle and lower order to leave the hosts struggling at 185/8 in their second innings at lunch. India were 202 ahead at lunch, with Wriddhiman Saha batting on eight. Overnight batsman Cheteshwar Pujara was the highest scorer for the Indians with 77. India started the day in a steady manner before part-time seamer Stiaan van Zyl sent back Virat Kohli when the Indian skipper attempted a drive only to offer an edge to Vilas behind the stumps. Tahir got the second breakthrough for South Africa soon after with his first ball of the day when he had Pujara caught by Amla in the slips. Pujara hit one six and half a dozen boundaries during his stay at the middle. Ajinkya Rahane survived only nine balls before Temba Bavuma took a fine catch at forward short-leg to give Harmer his first scalp of the day. Harmer then dismissed Ravindra Jadeja and Amit Mishra in quick succession to reduce the hosts to 182/7. Jadeja was trapped leg before while Mishra was caught at squareleg as he went for a pull shot. Ashwin pushed India's lead past the 200-run mark, before Tahir found his outer edge with the last ball before lunch as Amla pulled off another fine effort in the slips.

The background of Hornbill and the religion of Heraka Scattering Plain Thoughts

H

ornbill festival was started and initiated during the time of the then Chief Minister Shri. S.C Jamir which was hold at Kohima Local ground coinciding with the celebration of Nagaland Statehood Day on1st Dec. every calendar year. Though initially small the events have gradually emerge to be the only and biggest common festival in the modern history of Nagas which was highly figure out by the then Chief Minster and present Lok Sabha MP Shri. Neiphiu Rio leading the people of Nagaland in merry making and worshipping the “Hornbill” as their goddess for nearly two decades. Though the Nagas have accepted Christianity religion and call ourselves as ‘Nagaland for Christ’, the Nagas must turn to our Almighty God from our every wicked ways and differences, until then how can we boldly stand before the temptation in the like of hornbill festival which has nothing to propagate the religious believe of Christianity doctrine rather transform

the mind of Nagas with not less than an idol (Hornbill) worshippers. In the meanwhile, the concept for construction and setting up of Rani Gaidinliu Library cum Memorial Museum at Kohima was initiated and approved during the time of the then Chief Minster Shri. Neiphiu Rio since 2010. And the same project was implementing by the present Chief Minster Shri. T.R Zeliang. Gaidinliu was also known as the preserver of Heraka religion and a paragon of renunciation. ‘Heraka’ Which in Rongmei language is translated as ‘Hera’ means ‘Almighty’ ‘Ka’ means ‘God’ - “Almighty God”. Therefore, if it is true and to be believed, during our forefathers time of our Angami Naga tribe, when the great stormy weather or earthquake appeared, they pray to their Almighty God as “Tei A Pfu Kijü A Pfü” which means ‘Sky as Father and Earth as Mother” to save them as because, those days they do not worship a particular idols having a particular name in the like of Hinduism.

The practice of Kampai or Hereka is nothing less than cult or occult an is alien to our Naga society and to speak the truth it is a threat to the present Christian culture. However, the present Naga society has transformed into a Christian state and as such alien religion other than Christianity such as Kampai or Heraka or “Tei A Pfu Kijü A Pfü” should not be practice or propagate in any manner. Further, the Nagas know that there is only one Almighty God, then why should the Nagas have another goddess? Every parts of the world come across a revolutionary movement from time to time with most having the principal of violence as a means to address their issue or demand. In such a manner, the Naga National Council (NNC) was also revolutionary movement fighting for the Naga common cause through violence, similarly the NSCN (IM) NSCN (K) etc have practices the same tactic. In the same manner Rani Gaidinliu also used the same method to tackle her enemy

as a revolutionary fighter. But during the then D.C Kohima S.C Dev she surrendered before the Govt. of India and for which she was given a Cabinet status and offered her a Govt. Quarter, bodyguards as well as all facilities as applicable according to the rules of GoI. till her death. Besides, if GOI have recognized her as Rani Gaidinliu and offered any developmental work which will benefits the people, the Nagas should not be an obstacle to it. However, construction of a Statue or making Rani as an Idol or to worship her Heraka religion should not be allowed within Nagaland. Moreover, Nagas have worship Hornbill for so many decades as against Christianity religion, therefore projecting Gaidinliu culture for worshipping “Heraka” is not less than worshipping Hornbill. Therefore, the leaders of Nagas should not force their people to accept or practice the Heraka religion or Hornbill festival which is totally contradicted with Christianity religion. T.L Angami

With great power comes great responsibility

W

e might have came across this phrase "with great power comes great responsibility" in some of the superheroes movie, which is in fact the need of the hour for our society. Those who acquire power has greater responsibility towards the people, as they have the power to bring about a change in the society, its up to them what kind of change it seeks to bring. Hitler great power gave to us the second world war. Gandhiji gave to the world the power of non-violence, Abraham Lincoln ended slavery in USA. If we look around the world most of the time its the weak , the poor and in general term "The common man" who suffers the most. The man-made price rise of essential goods and commodities affects the budget of the common man the most. Similarly its the common man who have to put their body and life on the line while traveling in taxi, auto and bus, through the pothole road of Nagaland as they cannot afford to own a luxury vehicle. The recent tribal clash its the weak and the innocent who suffered the most. Its the common man who get sandwhich between the

army and the underground factions. The backdoor appointment, its the poor who suffers the most as the only way a common man dream of getting a state job is through one's sheer hard work. The recent filling up of scholarship form through online its the poor students who are being exploited because most of them does not own a computer or a laptop. Therefore those who are wielding power must wake up from their slumber. Its not the job of the public to repair the roads as its just waste of money and time because the road will hardly last for a week. Public Agitation will not lead to lifting of AFSPA its the government who have to play a greater role for its removal just like the state government of Tripura. ACAUT and other organisations can only highlight the backdoor appointment and various scams, its the concerned authority like state vegilance commision and others who has to take action against the culprits. Public can only make hue and cry, write letters and article in the newspaper about their grievances whether related to non-realease of teachers salaries , delay in RMSA result, growing crime against women,

unnecessary rise in taxi auto fair, duping and harrasment of public by the butchers. Its the concerned authority who has to take necessary action. But as most of the real life superheroes are still in their sweet slumber, Nagaland is fast becoming a land of "kushi kushi " and as a result of which its the common man who are suffering the most. A minister and civil servant must be humble to realise the fact that they are public servants not the master or the king. Its their moral duty and responsibilty to work for the benefit of the public especially for the weak and downtrodden whether they like it or not. Our forefather were held in high esteemed for their bravery, integrity, honesty, hard working, self-respect, cheerfulness, hospitality. This are some of the values of our forefather that we are all proud of as naga and we need to promote this to our coming generation and to the world instead of just promoting naga dance and dresses and giving lip service about our rich and proud naga culture during festivals. One eminent intellectuals had once shared that people judge and know one's culture by our behaviour. So what kind of naga culture

are we promoting to the world at present, the culture of Laziness, boostful attitude, rampant corruption of bribe, backdoor appointment, no work draw salary, intolerance, might is right, nepotism, favourtism, dirty selfish politics in the name of naga political solution etc. The politicians and bureaucrat's are the policy maker and policy implementers, hence they must own greater responsibilty and play a pro active role to built our society which is unfortunately getting worst day by day. There has been positive initiative in the recent past from young dynamic bureaucrats to bring about a change and its a welcoming sight which all are noticing and appreciating and hope they will continue to do so without any fear or favour. In any democratic society like ours the civil servants and politicians are the pillar of administration and if they used in the right way it can improve the life of the common people and make the society a better place to live in and if they chose to misuse it then it will led to total choas which unfortunately Nagaland is slowly witnessing. T

hese plain thoughts are personal from the assimilations of day to day hearing around us and lay to the needed rectifications. Thought 1) This begins on seeing the Photoshot picture of the Framework Agreement in the nation’s great house in Delhi and wonder how well the ranks and files of the Hebron team are prepared throughout the eighteen long years for the situation to the Framework Agreement in that great house, which is for the destiny and moulding of a nation and not known whether to the full or not and whether exclusive Nagaland or cross boarder solution to the Pan Naga level. Thought 2) As regards to the Pan Naga Sovereignty, there should be pre-simultaneous geographical and political integration because without these integration there can be no regulated Government and its entity will be the non government organisation, take an example, “Pan Naga Economic Confederation” or any organisation on Pan Naga level it will be an NGO and those of social and emotional integrations are fallow up ones. Thought 3) In connection with the Integration and Sovereignty a core question is furnished herewith:”Is it solely and wholly the right mandatory body to represent the whole Nagas or Nagaland by one faction”, that is when the Pan Nagas are integrated to become a sovereign nation or to become a federal state/states in the union and when the crave for integration is discarded and the final political solution is rested exclusively on Nagaland? Now another set of focal points with questions: (a) After the integration the formation of Sovereignty is in progress, will Nagaland State be split up or in status quo? (b)When it is integrated to be a Federal state; Nagaland is state with the Article 371A of which some of its tribes are dissected to Assam and Arunachal, but other Naga inhabited areas are districts and when to dissolve and disintegrate Nagaland in the name of brotherhood, will the aboriginal Nagaland will agree to sacrifice their state with the Article 371A? (c) When the crave for Naga integration is discarded and the final political solution dwell upon Nagaland, will the aboriginal Nagaland accommodate the surrounding indiscriminate people to mould their destiny in the name of brotherhood? This political integration is a non heard agenda in the pre Accord Federalist leads. Thought 4) Nagaland as a Unique state, it exhibits its unique identity with the formation of Naga Club 1918 and the submission of political memorandum to Simon Commission 1928 to be excluded from Indian Reform Scheme, the Nine point Agreement, the Flag hoisting 1947, the Naga Plebiscite 1951 and the Prime Minister level 6 round Delhi talk 1964. These are just a few political illustrations among the many for a quick information to prove the unique feature of Naga Political movement. Then the long and high pitch battles between the Naga Federal Army and Indian Arm Forces where the little Naga Army from little Nagaland population using the muzzle loading guns and the old rifles from the second would war had to confront the mighty Regiments from across the big country. On the latter days the Naga Army started importing the most advance arms from China and Pakistan on their backs on months long exodus raising the anxiety to the Indians. It is an open secret that the war had undeniably sharpened the Indian Arm Forces fighting in the jungles and on the Mountains. Right from the beginning the Naga politics is not war origin but politics and for the large scale war in Nagaland who is to blame, the Naga or the India? In the midst of all the political and arms confrontations nowhere is heard the existence and activities of a Rani or a woman Army commander in all the urban and rural Nagaland. Pattinson named children's charity ambassador

H

ollywood Heartthrob Robert Pattinson has been named an ambassador for a charity which provides food and shelter for orphans. The "Twilight" star agreed to help raise the profile of the GO Campaign, which was set up in 2006 to help vulnerable children by providing essential resources including accommodation, clean water and education, reported Contactmusic. "I've eagerly followed the growing impact GO Campaign has had over the years, on so many children and youth, and I love how tangible and transparent it is," he said. "They partner with some remarkable grassroots local heroes who are doing fantastic work but who lack the needed resources, and in places where a little bit of money can go a long way. I've been a donor and a supporter, and now I look forward to joining their efforts, so together we can give opportunity to even more kids and young adults across the globe.
