‘Phom’and ‘Longleng’ take flight Fitted with satellite transmitters Amur Falcons go up on world map of wildlife conservation Morung Express News
Governor finds ITC Longwa ‘occupied’ by domesticated animals; urges action
Dimapur, OcTOber 29 (mexN): Nagaland Governor PB Acharya has expressed displeasure at the fact that the International Trade Centre (ITC) at Longwa, Mon, lies in a dilapidated condition with “almost abandoned infrastructure” that has been occupied by “domesticated animals” for shelter. Acharya visited the ITC at Longwa on October 28 while on his way to inaugurate the Chief Angh’s residence and tourist guest house. He was accompanied by local MLA Phowang who was asked for an explanation on the condition of the ITC. According to a press release from PRO to the Governor, the MLA stated that despite “many attempts” through the elected representatives as well as the people of the area concerned, no headway was made on its development due to the “lackadaisical response” from both the State and Central governments. The ITC at Longwa was established in 1996, and inaugurated in 2006 in order to facilitate border trade with neighboring Myanmar. In 2016, it still remains on crutches. The Governor Nagaland urged for the MLA and the public of the area to “seriously” pursue the resumption of the Centre “as any trade centre should have a brisk activities and these ITCs should be no less as it will benefit people residing in the border area of India and Myanmar.” Further, the Governor also “boosted the morale” of the Indian armed forces by visiting Delta Company of 35 Assam Rifles and having an interaction with them. While acknowledging the work of the armed forces in the border region, Acharya urged them to initiate public welfare schemes under army projects to “benefit the people of the border area.”
In yet another step for Nagaland State towards conservation of the winged visitors from Mongolia, two Amur Falcons named ‘Phom’ and ‘Longleng’ were fitted with satellite transmitters and released from Lemscahenlok biodiversity conservation area at Yaongyimchen village under Longleng District on Saturday. “The two migratory birds from Mongolia will carry the message of the Phom region and Phom people on conservation to all corners of the world,” said Dr. R Suresh Kumar, a scientist with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) during the release of the birds. Dr. Kumar said the world may never have heard of Longleng or of the Phom people, but the satellite tagging of the two Amur Falcons will now put them on the world map of wildlife conservation. Besides, nine other Amur Falcons named Yingli, Chingmei (peace), Pongching, Mongtikang, Kompang, Liok, Lasa and Henko were tagged with rings and identification numbers and released on the day. This is the second satellite tagging of Amur Falcons from Nagaland after three Amur Falcons named Pangti, Naga and Wokha were satellite tagged in 2013 from Wokha district. This conservation initiative of Yaongyimchen village is one of the big examples of how community involvement helps in conservation and protection of wildlife. Besides protecting the winged migratory birds, the village inhabitants do not hunt or kill any wildlife within their jurisdiction. Lemscahenlok biodiversity conservation leading the way Chairman of Lemscahenlok Society, who is also Executive Secretary of
Womenfolk and children of Yaongyimchen village, assisted by Hungarian Scientist Peter Fehervani (not seen) release one of the two Amur Falcons tagged with a ring and identification number on Saturday. (Morung Photo)
Longleng Baptist Churches Association, Nuklu Phom, said today’s successful tagging of the two migratory birds is an example of the community coming together, keeping their minds with one vision and working together. Nuklu envisioned that Yaongyimchen has the potential to become a wildlife sanctuary. He said the village folk in the area have been carrying out conservation initiatives for more than six years without any help or assistance from any quarters. The conservation efforts have borne fruit with not only the Amur Falcons coming to the biodiversity conservation area for roosting, but there are now more than 30 barking deers, 7 species of frogs, great Indian leopards,
stags, sereows and other wildlife species living in the area. Its neighboring villages namely Pongching, Mongtikang, Sanglu and Alayung have also joined hands with Yaongyimchen village in the conservation and protection of wildlife. Only recently, more than 17 out of the 40 villages under Longleng district have declared in their citizens’ meetings to conserve forest and protect wildlife, Nuklu announced. “20-30 years from now Longleng district may become the biodiversity hotspot of the region,” he stated. Chief Wildlife Warden, Department of Forest, Ecology, Environment and Wildlife, SP Tripathy while lauding the efforts of the Yaongyimchen village
in the conservation of wildlife, said it is not only a contribution to India but to the whole world. It will also help in control of climate change, he added. Tripathy also said this will also put Yaongyimchen village on the world map. The Chief Wildlife Warden suggested that the village make a community reserve project and submit it to him so that he can forward it to the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India. Even though the Nagaland State Government does not have any funds to assist the village in their conservation efforts, Tripathy assured all possible help to promote the community reserve project with the GoI and at the same time make efforts to convert the
area into an ecotourism spot. You have to show the world the conservation of wildlife and biodiversity by a community Hungarian Scientist Peter Fehervari, who is in Lemsachenlok along with his team on the invitation of the WII to satellite tag the Amur Falcons and study the birds said such conservation effort is really something to be proud of. “You have to show it to the world. This will teach the world the conservation of wildlife and biodiversity by a community,” Fehervari stated. DFO Tuensang, Dr. Sentitula said the conservation initiative of the Yaongyimchen villagers is an example of social forestry and a sense of tribal identity which had always been a part of the Naga tribal life and culture, which has been lost in the present Naga context. Early in the morning, a wildlife watch tower was also inaugurated. The Yaongyimchen village council took the initiative to build a four kilometer road up to the watch tower point. Short speeches were also delivered by DC Longleng, SP Longleng, President Phom People’s Council, president, APGO, and Samom Khelen Singh, Wildlife Warden Kiphire. Yaongyimchen Students’ Union presented a reading on ‘Our journey towards bio diversity conservation’ while Yaongyimchen Women Group presented a welcome song. In an indication of how the Yaongyimchen villagers take the conservation of wildlife and biodiversity seriously, almost all the villagers locked their doors, left their daily chores and joined in the celebration of the success of their conservation efforts culminating with the tagging of the Amur Falcon at Nemba Point.
AKM extends solidarity UNC 48-hour bandh & indefinite eco blockade from Oct 30 to aggrieved teachers Newmai News Network Senapati | October 29
Issues 7-day ultimatum to Nagaland Government Dimapur, OcTOber 29 (mexN): In a first among the apex organisations, the Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) today served an ultimatum to the Government of Nagaland to immediately release “all pending salaries to the aggrieved teachers within 7 days” and “henceforth pay their monthly salaries regularly.” The AKM is constrained to issue this ultimatum in the interest of safeguarding the career and welfare of the student community, stated the apex Ao students’ body in its ultimatum letter to the Chief Minister of Nagaland. The contents of the letter were released to media here by its President L Jemti Longchar and General Secretary Bendangkumba Aier. Stating that it is “astounded” at the fact that the State government has not been paying monthly salaries to a number of Hindi and SSA teachers for six to nine months at a stretch, the AKM further accused that State Government of being “absolutely unfair” to the aggrieved teachers. The boycott by aggrieved teachers under the aegis of the All Nagaland Hin-
di Teachers Association (ANHTA) and the Nagaland SSA Teachers Association 2010 & 2013 (NSSATA) is due to government’s failure to meet their demands and is thus legitimate, it said extending its endorsement. However, the career of thousands of innocent students at peril, more so as the current academic session is coming to an end due to government negligence and apathy, the AKM memo further implied. In this regard, AKM asserted that it would not remain a mute spectator to “specter of mis-governance” on the part of the government of the day and appealed for fulfilling the demands of the aggrieved teachers “without any further delay so that they can perform their duties efficiently.” All pending salaries to the aggrieved teachers must be released within 7 days and henceforth pay their monthly salaries regularly, it added. Maintaining that the career of innocent students, the future of the land, cannot be put at jeopardy because of the government’s ineptness, AKM further cautioned that it would be “compelled to take its own course of action” in the event of government failure to comply with the ultimatum within the stipulated dateline.

KOHima, OcTOber 29 (mexN): The Assam Rifles has refuted the allegations levelled against it following the October 23 gun battle with cadres of the GPRN/NSCN at Okotso village, Wokha. The AR PRO, in a media statement, statedthattheAssamRifles“haveimmense respect for all religions and will never take any step or action to disrespect any religious place of worship.” The 28 Assam Rifles was accused of forcibly occupying Mekokla village Baptist Church building and guest house on October 22 and 23; the alleged episode coinciding with the October 23 gun battle in which one GPRN/NSCN cadre was killed and another injured, while one AR soldier was also wounded. Terming the allegations as “a blatant lie” spread “to cover the wrong
doings of UG Cadres”, the statement said that the AR comprises of a large number of Christian troops, some of whom were part of the Okotso operations. “The Assam Rifles remains committed to its motto ‘Friends of the Hill People’ and to maintain peace and tranquillity in the state,” it added. As published earlier, the statement maintained that the Okotso operations was launched on the night of October 22 following intelligence inputs about the movement of armed cadres in “general area” Okotso. It added that the following morning, on October 23, presence of armed cadres in uniform was detected in a suspected camp 3 kms from the village. Stating that the AR troops were fired upon first by the cadres, the statement said one of its soldiers was hit during
the initial burst of fire that came their way with a bullet hitting the soldier’s bullet-proof jacket injuring him. In the exchange of fire that ensued, one GPRN/NSCN cadre was “neutralized” and another injured. The injured cadre was initially treated by the 28 AR Medical Officer and later evacuated to the Wokha District Hospital, it added. While reiterating that the Ceasefire Ground Rules clearly prohibits carrying of arms by NPG cadres outside designated camps, it stated that during the October 23 fire fight, the nearest designated camp of the GPRN/NSCN was more than 50 kms away from Okotso. Two AK 47 rifles, one 12” bore gun, one .303 rifle, one G3 rifle and one .22 rifle along with a cache of ammunition were recovered by the 28 AR, the statement said.
The United Naga Council (UNC) today announced the imposition of a 48-hour “total shut down” followed by indefinite economic blockade on national highways including the banning of the construction of Trans Asian Railways, Jiribam to Tupul and other national projects in all the ‘Naga territories’ in Manipur with effect from midnight of October 30 against the “lopsided decision” to create the so called Sadar Hills and Jiribam into full fledged districts, as well as against what it termed as “state sponsored terrorism by the communal government of Manipur”.
According to the UNC, every indigenous Naga village has its well-defined traditional boundary and jurisdiction since time immemorial. Further, the UNC noted that there has never been any confusion on the ancestral lands of the Nagas, be it among the Nagas or with neighboring communities. “The indigenous Nagas have all along been fighting against the arbitrary bifurcation and division of our land without our knowledge and consent,” it added. According to the UNC, the wishes of the indigenous Naga people on the issue of the “so called Sadar Hills” have been expressed in four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed between the Naga people and
the Government of Manipur. (Details provided by ANSAM on page 3) It then warned that “O. Ibobi Singh shall be held responsibility” for any eventuality if it goes against the letter and spirit of the four MoUs and written assurance. Noting that “land and the Nagas are inseparable,” the UNC added that “It is the obligation of every Naga to protect and defend our ancestral land, people, identity, history, tradition, culture, custom and time honored-institutions at all cost. We are the owner of our land and we will never allow anyone to decide for the Nagas. We strongly oppose the proposed creation of the so called Sadar Hills and Jiribam sub division into full fledged revenue districts.”
60-foot Bailey Bridge inaugurated in Pughoboto Our Correspondent
Pughoboto | October 29
Minister for PWD (R&B), Y Vikheho Swu today inaugurated the much awaited Bailey Bridge, spanning 60 feet, over Khucho river on the road to Satakha-Chishilimi under Pughoboto sub-division in Zunheboto district. In his inaugural address, Swu emphasised on the need for reforming the Public Works Department’s system of functioning, particularly the streamlining and management of labour deployment. Structuring the deployment of superintendent engineers and labour management will be completed by next year, he said, while adding that labourers of the Department will be paid monthly salary and their performance checked. Swu informed that Rs. 300 crore is required annually for maintenance of roads in the State. However, presently, the State has been receiving only Rs. 40 crore which makes it difficult to maintain all roads. He said that Nagaland Road Maintenance policy will be brought out by next year and there will be subsequent improvement in the condition of roads. Swu also announced that Pughoboto Sub-division will have a fullfledged PWD (R&B) Executive Engineer office which will be inaugurated on November 16 as approved by the State Cabinet. Centre has declared five highways and five more agreed

in principle while ‘economic uplift highway’ from Showuba-NiulandGhatashi-Pughoboto-ZunhebotoShamatore-Pangsha will be taken up very shortly. Clarifying on public accusation that there is no development in the State for past few years, he said that presently Nagaland is suffering because the Central government, since 2014, has removed the special category status, because of which the special funding from Centre has been cut. In this, the Minister emphasised the need for Nagaland State to have its own revenue and therefore appealed the people to sincerely pay electricity, water and other bills and taxes to the government so that proper development can be taken up. He added that in the past, the State Government used to take huge loans and created debts but the present government under TR Zeliang
has not been taking any credit and trying to overcome deficit. Swu appreciated the concern of the two villages (Khukiye-Lukhayi and Chishilimi) in allowing the government to carry forward development in the area without any hindrance. He lauded contractor M/S East West Construction, Dimapur for completing the bridge in record time of 13 months even as the scheduled time was 36 months. He also said that three other bridges are being undertaken by other contractors in Satakha, Dimapur and Phek. Engineer-in-Chief, Khupi Natso in a brief address, lauded the Minister for taking the initiative for all round infrastructure development in the Constituency in particular and the District and State in general. He also asserted that the engineers of the PWD are fully behind him in carrying forward road projects in the State.

ANSAM reminds GoM of MoUs signed with Nagas on district re-organisation Tahamzam, OcTOber 29 (mexN): The All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM), the apex organisation of Naga students in Manipur State, has stated today that it will continue to “protect and defend our land.” It stated this in a memorandum to Najma Heptulla, Governor of Manipur, drawing attention to the matter of the creation of Sadar Hills district and Jiribam district. In this regard, the ANSAM reminded the Government of Manipur (GoM) of the various Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed between the Government of Manipur and the Nagas on the matter of ‘District Re-Organisation’. While urging the GoM to uphold the sanctity of the “Agreements/MoUs signed and assurances made,” the ANSAM, in the memorandum signed by its President, Seth Shatsang, and Speaker, Souni Khapa, stated that “land is sacred” for the Naga peo-
ple (Indigenous Peoples) and “we have defended the same with our lives and political movement for nearly a century now.” The highlights of the mentioned agreements are as follows: On December 14, 1981, the GoM and ANSAM had arrived at an understanding that “the GoM will take suitable criteria into consideration. The GoM will also give appropriate opportunity to all the stakeholders for their justification”. On November 10, 1992, the GoM and Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) had signed an agreement that “not an inch of Naga Areas would be carved out or bartered away under any circumstances and any demand shall be made to rest by the GoM”. On September 27, 1996, the GoM and Naga Civil Society represented by ANSAM & United Naga Council (UNC) agreed that “not even an inch of the Naga inhabited Areas and its original land should be
touched while creating any new District.” Further, “if at all the Sadar Hills District is going to be created, its inauguration must be preceded by the amalgamation of the land of the Nagas to their respective contiguous districts, Viz: Ukhrul, Tamenglong, Chandel & North District (Senapati)”. On June 23, 1998, the GoM and Naga Civil Society represented by ANSAM & UNC signed MoU that “the proposed Sadar Hills issue should be consensus of the peoples concerned” and the GoM will take the consent of the UNC & ANSAM. On November 2, 2011, at Senapati, the Chief Minister of Manipur, in the presence of the Union Home Minister, reassured that “no decision would be taken on the Sadar Hills matter without consulting all sections of the people and all stakeholders, including the bodies representing the Nagas” Ref. No.8/82008-NE-I Ministry of Home Affairs dated 24 November 2011.

There was also an interaction session among the visitors and office bearers of all the Khonoma village organizations. Narendra Modi govt special package At Rs 1,000 cr, garment exporters’ investment pledges Rs 73,000 short, but promise more
New Delhi, OctOber 29 (the FiNaNcial express): More than 50 garment exporters have pledged to invest around R1,000 crore so far, responding to the government’s announcement of a R6,000-crore special package and some radical changes to labour laws for the industry in June, according to the data sourced from the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) and some companies. The level of investment commitments announced by exporters so far are way below the government’s ambitious target of attracting investment to the tune of Rs 74,000 crore over the next three years. Nevertheless, the exporters that FE spoke to were unanimous in asserting that the move to allow fixed-term employment is the biggest labour reform done for the garment industry in ages, and they are going to adopt
it in a big way. Also, the exporters said since most of the decisions — including the provision for fixed-term employment — have been notified only recently, more companies could announce their investment plans in coming weeks as well, thus driving up the proposed investment levels. However, a big exporter, who didn’t want to be named, admitted that since the balance sheets of many of the exporters are already stressed due to subdued demand in previous years, it will take some time for massive investments to flow in. It isn’t clear if Shahi Exports — the country’s largest garment exporter that ships out items worth R6,000-7,000 crore a year — has committed any investment yet, responding to the announcement of the package. An email sent to the company for this purpose remained unanswered.
Through the package, the government is aiming to create 10 million additional jobs, $30 billion in additional exports and investments worth Rs 74,000 crore in the textile and garment sector. According to Sudhir Dhingra, chairman of one of the country’s largest garment companies, Orient Craft, if the proposed free trade agreement with the EU and another one with Britain are clinched, all these targets will be easily realised. That is because Indian exporters are paying close to 10% duties for supplies to the EU, while key competitor Bangladesh, Pakistan and Cambodia have zero duty access to it. The EU makes up for 37% of India’s garment exports and Britain alone used to account for roughly onethird of the EU demand. Orient will add 4,000 people to its existing workforce of 32,000 over the next three years. Apart from re-
placing a small unit in Noida with a bigger one, the company will set up one more facility in the city. Virender Uppal, chairman of another large exporter, Richa Global, said he will add 3,000 people within a year to its existing employee base of 11,000 people. Narendra Kumar Goenka of Texport Industries says his company is looking to hire 4,500 people over the next three years, recording a sharp increase over the current workforce of 1,000 people. Over a half a dozen small and medium enterprises with a turnover of less than R5 crore have also pledged to invest. This is important, as roughly 80% of the labour-intensive garment sector is dominated by small-scale industries. Ashok G Rajani, the chairman of AEPC and also the chief of Midas Touch Exports, has pledged to invest R75 crore and hire 650
people in response to the package. The government in June announced a raft of measures including the introduction of fixed-term employment, optional contribution to EPF by workers earning less than R15,000 a month, refund of employers’ contribution of EPF, additional incentives under the Amended Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme, enhanced duty drawback and some income tax relief to boost the garment sector. The government introduced fixed-term employment and brought in parity between the contractual and permanent labourers in terms of wages and all other incentives. So a garment factory now has the flexibility to hire contractual workers for a fixed period with ease so that it can meet supply commitments, given the highly seasonal nature
of export orders. Despite enthusiasm shown by exporters for the package, analysts say the targets set by the government are too ambitious to be achieved in a span of three years, given stressed balance sheets of most companies, subdued demand and dented cost competitiveness of Indian exporters vis-a-vis Bangladesh’s or Vietnam’s. Nevertheless, the analysts added that the steps will also encourage the consolidation of garments units under fewer roofs and more units may come under the organised sector. At present, close to 32 million people are employed in the textiles and garments sector, which is the largest jobs provider after agriculture and accounts for roughly 15% of the country’s exports. The country’s textile and garment exports stood almost flat at $40 billion in the last fiscal, with clothing accounting for $17 billion.
Railways to launch mobile app for multiple services New Delhi, OctOber 29 (pti): To make train journeys pleasant and hassle-free, railways will launch an integrated mobile app for availing all travel-related services such as hiring taxis, porters and booking retiring rooms and lounges at stations among others. The app which aims to provide a one stop solution for various services can be used for booking tickets, ordering food from a favourite restaurant or finding hotel rooms of passengers’ choice outside the stations. The application is likely to be launched early next year as the required ground work for it is underway, a senior Railway Ministry official said. Currently, a few apps are operational for booking tickets and food but there is no such app for availing multiple services. As per plan, the app will offer 17 services like porter, wheelchair, taxi, lounges, bedrolls among others to more than 2 crore passengers who travel in about 11,000 passenger trains per day across 7000 stations in the country.
75% of internet use in 2017 will be mobile
New YOrk, OctOber 29 (reuters): Seventyfive percent of internet use will be mobile in 2017, up slightly from this year, as a growing number of consumers around the world access the web on smartphones and tablets, media buying agency Zenith forecast this week. Zenith previously estimated that 71 percent of internet consumption would be mobile in 2016. Sixty percent of global internet advertising dollars will come from mobile advertising in 2018, Zenith said, following the release of its “Mobile Advertising Forecasts” report on Thursday. Mobile advertising expenditure in 2018 will total $134 billion, which “is more than will be spent on newspaper, magazine, cinema and outdoor advertising put together,” it said. Zenith, a unit of French ad agency Publicis Groupe SA , had estimated global mobile advertising expenditure in 2016 to be $71 billion. As more ad dollars shift to the digital realm from television, brands are rushing to Facebook Inc, Snapchat and Google where they can market to viewers. “In four years, you’ve gone from 40 percent to 70 percent (of total internet use) in mobile,” said Scott Singer, a digital media executive and managing director of innovation consultancy firm DDG Inc. This trend is driving a shift in ad dollars to mobile and stoking deals in the media, entertainment and communications businesses, he added. The rise of mobile data consumption, including video, is pushing telecommunications companies to marry content and digital distribution. They are betting that they can lure viewers to online video and other content that are relayed over their internet and wireless networks, while also attracting advertisers to grow ad revenue. AT&T Inc on Saturday said it plans to buy media company Time Warner Inc for $85.4 billion to diversify into tures, Cloud Applications content distribution. NAGALAND
NSF asked to prioritize students’ welfare National Children’s Science Congress 2016 Morung Express News Kohima | October 29
The 69th Foundation Day of the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) was held on October 29 at the NSF office with Z. Lohe, former president, NSF as the guest speaker. Education, election, corruption and Naga nationalism were four crucial issues that Lohe emphasized in his speech, which he viewed the present NSF leaders need to address in Naga society. Positing that as a student body, NSF must take up the welfare of students as its top priority, Lohe reminded the past plans and action plans that NSF has introduced but failed to execute till date. Education in Nagaland has degenerated which has become a deep concern, viewed Lohe who also pointed out, “The type of education being imparted and the syllabus being charted out in the name of expertise and imparted to our gullible children is in a mess. Things are being managed haphazardly.

Authorities concerned are not paying due attention to their assignments. Everybody is concerned with money. We cannot be silent spectators.” The failure to voice out against corrupt practices in education and lack of quality education was further highlighted. With regard to the issue of election, Lohe viewed that elections have become so corrupt not just in the State elections but right from the students organization to municipal bodies. The values and ideologies of political parties or a candi-
date are no more respected, he maintained. Lohe, who also was a former legislator in the 1980s affirmed how in the olden times, people listened and paid more attention to the political philosophy instead of the amount of money candidates will cash in. “The system has become abominable. When we have no sense of shame, fear and taboo, when these three qualities leave a human being, s/he is no more a human being,” asserted Lohe, noting that when people are deprived of these three qualities they become
equivalent to animals, and that the election season in Nagaland are much like zoos. The end result of election is seen today, viewed Lohe who asked if NSF will remain mute to this challenge. Asserting that Nagas are no more sensitive to corruption, Lohe exhorted the NSF leaders to take proactive action on the issue of corruption in Nagaland. In the issue of Naga nationalism, Lohe maintained that Naga nationalism is in the blood of the Nagas which continues to be an everyday topic and the first topic of discussion in any gathering. Comparing the situation of Nagaland with other movements and countries, Lohe stated that instead of taking the struggle into something positive, Nagas have taken on a negative reaction. “The overreaction has brought the present maze. We are in total chaos,” said Lohe, calling upon the NSF leaders to educate the young generation of the history of the Nagas.
Project Sunrise: HIV intervention prog at Central Jail Morung Express News Dimapur | October 29
An HIV intervention programme was launched at the Central Jail, Dimapur on October 29 with Health & Family Welfare Minister, P. Longon as the chief guest. It is part of a larger Prisons HIV programme known as Project Sunrise funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). With the 8 north-east states as the target, it is being implemented by the National Aids Control Organisation in partnership with Family Health International (FHI) 360 – a non-profit human
development organisation dedicated to improving lives by advancing integrated, locally driven solutions. In Nagaland, Community Awareness & Development Foundation (CAD) was selected as the agency for implementing the programme at the Central Jail. The project will span 5 years (2015-20) and will cover Kohima, Dimapur, Tuensang, Wokha, Kiphire, Phek and Zunheboto. According to Sangti Konyak, Project Coordinator, CAD, the FHI 360 through the project aims to enhance institutional and human capacity “to accel-
erate HIV & AIDS response and scale up the quality of the comprehensive package of services primarily for People Who Inject Drugs (PWID) in the 8 NE states.” Health Minister, Longon, in his address, while stating that the need for such a programme has been felt for quite some time, said, “I believe the intervention would be able to address the gaps in HIV service delivery inside the prison and all HIV patients will be able to receive treatments which are given free of cost and enhance their quality of life.” According to him, the inmates may fall

MSU condemns ‘forceful occupation’ of church by AR
WOkha, OctOber 29 (mexN): The Mekokla Students' Union (MSU) today condemned the “forceful occupation” of Mekokla Baptist Church by 28 Assam Rifles on the night of October 22. A press statement from MSU president, Benrithung Kikon and general secretary, Zirenthung Yanthan alleged that “instead of an accommodation being offered and repeated opposition by both the pastor and village council, the commander in charge replied, saying that it is under his jurisdiction and has the right to do whatever he wishes
and occupied the Church forcefully.” Terming the act an insult to the Nagas (as Nagas are mostly Christians) and the Christian nations, the students’ union asserted that “Church, Mandir or Mosque are places of worship and honouring God, not a place for warfare strategy.” The MSU further called the Assam Rifles “indiscipline soldiers” as “they keep hurting the sentiments of the Nagas and violate our rights through the unlawful acts which are totally undemocratic.” It reiterated that using a church as a strategy for warfare

Still, undeterred, she searched through her arts and crafts supplies until she found a plastic tube designed to keep roses fresh during shipping. Gold-
stein inserted a crayon piece into the tube and unwittingly created her first prototype. In 2002, she filed a patent for her Crayon Holders and soon struck a licensing deal with Rand International that ensured her five percent of royalties per sale. Her Crayon Holders not only make it easy to use broken crayons, but they also help kids with fine

According to CNBC, the invention earned Goldstein enough money to cover most of her college costs and helped to get her set up in New York City after she had graduated.

He thought, ‘Finally, I will not have to go to sleep hungry.’ The Hawk flew down to the tree and caught the Nightingale tightly in his claws and flew to a rock. The Nightingale was terrified in the Hawk’s clutches. She said to the Hawk, “Great Hawk, I sing very sweetly. I will sing beautiful songs for you. Kindly spare my life.” The Hawk replied, “Oh no! Alejandra Senestrari, the former director of the school, told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that Garella won them over: “With time, even those who had been opposed
joined in the initiative to hire Noe as a teacher. We very quickly realized that she had a strong vocation. She gave what the children in the nursery classes most appreciate, which is love.” It is a remarkable accomplishment, one that made her the first person with Down syndrome to become a teacher in Argentina. In the United States, Bryann Burgess gained a

INSPIRATIONAL STORIES, MESSAGES, POEMS & SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES
How the Prosperity Gospel hurts Racial Reconciliation Russell Moore The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
W
hen a prophet calls down fire from heaven, it’s wise to stand to the side. That’s how I felt a few weeks ago when John Perkins, the revered preacher and civil rights activist, brought up prosperity gospel pastor Creflo Dollar during a live interview I was conducting with Perkins at a summit on racial reconciliation. Perkins lamented that there are so few accredited African-American evangelical schools in the United States while at the same time Dollar is asking for money for a $65 million dollar private jet. “That’s almost witchcraft,” he said. The more I’ve thought of that over the past few weeks, the more I’m convinced that Perkins is right. The prosperity gospel is a barrier to racial reconciliation. Our true blessing First of all, the prosperity gospel targets the most
vulnerable in any society, whether urban or rural, black or white. As it does so, it offers a simplistic path to upward mobility through “claiming” God’s promises for health and wealth or through planting “seed” money, usually in the ministry of one of the prosperity preachers. The end result is what the apostles warned us about as early as the first century: predatory teachers who use a veneer of the Scriptures to prey on desperate people for their money or for sex, or for both (2 Timothy 3:1–9). The prosperity gospel exploits the poor (in our culture, disproportionately in minority communities) and diverts resources away from those communities into the coffers of the charlatans. The primary harm the prosperity gospel does to racial reconciliation, though, is that it is not the gospel. The prosperity gospel teachers use passages from Deuteronomy and elsewhere, with the list of God’s blessings for the law-keepers and curses for law-breakers — and then
do an end-run around the fulfillment of those blessings and curses in the life, death, and resurrection of Christ Jesus. They ignore the truth that the New Testament teaches that none of us are law-keepers and thus, left to ourselves, cut off from the blessings of God (Romans 2:12–3:20). They ignore that we are only blessed if we are hidden in the curse-bearing Jesus (Galatians 3:10–13). They obscure that we know if God is pleased with us, in the present age, not by our bank accounts or our pathology reports but by the truth that we are, in Christ, raised from the dead and seated at the right hand of the Father (Colossians 3:1–4). The Call for Justice The prosperity gospel teaches us to seek God’s blessing outside of the covenant fulfillment in Christ, and to hope not for the reconciliation of heaven and earth in him but instead to aspire to whatever Western culture deems as success. This is not gospel; this is witchcraft. And, as such, it
cannot bring about reconciliation. You cannot reconcile people across carnal divisions with a gospel based on carnal promises. The authentic gospel drives reconciliation because it points us to our identity in Christ — an identity that is Abrahamic and Davidic and totally outside of us (Colossians 3:11). The authentic gospel crucifies our Mammon worship by redirecting our aspirations away from temporal success toward cross-bearing, together, in light of a future inheritance, together. The authentic gospel calls to repentance our riskaverse definitions of “success,” so that we are to see the church as an outpost not of our socioeconomic class or our genetic identity but of the kingdom in which the last are first and the first are last, the faithful poor are heirs of the reign to come, and thus worthy of dignity and leadership in the present era (James 2:1–7). Only when churches are fueled by the biblical gospel will we be free from

got off the plane in Sri Lanka looking for Pete. But there was no one there to meet me. No one dressed like me. No one who looked like me. I was 8 million miles from home. I felt like I was wearing a flashing neon sign that read, “Completely Inexperienced World Traveler. Please rob me.” Where was Pete? You see, Pete had been all over the world. As long as Pete was with me, I knew I would be OK because he would know what to do. Isaiah 43:2 says: “When you pass through waters, I will be with you. And through the rivers, they shall not over-
flow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame kindle on you.” Believers will suffer. God says, “When you pass through the waters,” not if you pass through the waters. James tells us to count it all joy when we encounter trials of “various kinds” (James 1:2)—from minor aggravations to devastating tragedies. But here is the encouraging part: When we pass through these foaming waters Jesus promises, “I will be with you.” Jesus—the author of our faith, who has been tempted every way we are—will be with us. We don’t need to have all the answers ahead of time. Jesus will be with us. Whether we encounter waters or
flames, Jesus will be there, and He will know what to do. That’s all we need to know. Where will we get strength? Jesus. Where will we get help? Jesus. Where will we get direction? Jesus. And He will be with us to the end: “And remember, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matt. 28:20). Are you up to your neck in floodwaters? Are the flames licking all around you? You may not know what to do next. You may not know how you are going to get through this. But you only need to know one thing—Jesus is with you and will be with you in every situation. Keep your eyes on Jesus, and you will know His peace.
What REALLY Changes the World Dan Wilt Church Leaders
I
f we believe a Gospel of words will change our culture, we are misguided. It is a Gospel of power that changes lives. Lives changed by the power of God, in turn, create a culture that has the power to change culture. Words convey powerful ideas, but no meme, post, lyric or teaching will change a destiny. It is the Spirit’s power working through words, or perhaps more accurately, words formed by and articulating the leading Gospel of power, that will bring transformation. God’s power is most profoundly expressed through His all-surpassing Love. Every sign and wonder God gives, every renewing experience of grace and forgiveness, is powered by God’s heart for humankind. If we want a Gospel of power, we must first welcome the
Gospel of Love to overtake our own hearts. Having tasted the healing and restoring gift of God’s Love, we are then empowered to embody that same Love to the world around us. In this we see that power only finds its healthy foundation in Love. Power, uprooted from a loved heart that loves in return, will corrupt everything it touches—including the one that holds it. A Gospel of power, motivated by love and flowing from loved hearts, will manifest itself in miracles that change the heart, heal the body, restore the mind, free the emotions and alter the systems of this world. It is a Gospel of power, rooted and established in a Jesus-vision of Love, that will change the world. Dan Wilt, M.Min. is an artist, author, musician, educator, songwriter, communicator, and spiritual life writer. our idolatries of ranking ourselves by income or ethnicity — as though what the world values now is permanent. Churches like that, where the gospel is articulated and embodied in the makeup and leadership of the congregations, are churches that can prophetically call for justice because they have consciences shaped not by the spirit of the age but by the Spirit of Christ. Rival Gospels must go This will mean that we must oppose not only the full-deal heresy of the prosperity gospel but also the implicit ways we have absorbed a kind of discount-rate prosperity gospel that can view Christianity as centered around white, middleclass American success. Most of the church is impoverished, by American standards. This is no sign that God is not blessing the church. Those sectors of the church around the world that are now the least “successful” by American standards are the very churches holding
most firmly to the gospel, a gospel increasingly distant from American values. It could be that God is preparing the American church to rely on what we in our pride think of as perpetually “our” mission field to evangelize the next generation of Americans. Regardless of what the future holds, our culture is in need of a transcendent word that can reconcile people to one another, across racial and ethnic and economic divisions. The gospel can do that. But for the gospel to reconcile us, to God and to one another, every rival gospel must go. Russell Moore (@drmoore) Russell D. This foundation of redemption opens a new life to be made manifest. We can no longer live as we did before the cross. We do not simply stand by the cross as if we had not been reconciled. We do need the cross, the blood and the forgiveness, daily. But we live after the cross, through the cross and because of the cross. We have received a new life to live. The old life has passed away; the new life has come. Everything has been made new! We have become new creations. Man was created in the image of God but later fell into sin. In the new creation, God re-creates us so that we will live with Him forever. Our identity is transformed. Before we were sinful; now we are righteous. Before we had a guilty conscience; now we have a clear conscience. Before we walked in fear; now we walk in faith. Before we lived in defeat; now we live in victory. Before we walked in darkness; now we walk in the light. Like the process of metamorphosis, from a caterpillar we have been transformed into a beautiful butterfly and completely crystallized. We are new creations in Christ Jesus! Prayer: We thank you Almighty God, for making us into new creations in Christ Jesus. Help us to identify with the new life we have received from you and let us glorify your name. Through Jesus, our Lord, our Saviour, our Rock and our Redeemer we pray. Amen

ohn Wesley and his brother Charles were the founders of Methodism and preached during the first Great Awakening. He is also credited for later influencing the holiness movement and the Pentecostal movement. John was born in England in 1703. On May 24, 1738, on his way to preach in America, he met a Moravian missionary on the ship and experienced his evangelical conversion. Of that experience, he said he felt, “his “heart strangely warmed.” John Wesley had a powerful ministry to children. Here are a few of the quotes from his journals. April 11, 1756. (Dublin) I met about a hundred children, who are catechized (instructed) publicly twice a week. Thomas Walsh began this some months ago, and the fruit of it appears already. What a pity, that all our preachers in every place, have not the zeal and wisdom to follow his example. July 30, 1758. (Cork) I began meeting with the children in the afternoon,
though with little hopes of doing them good; but I had not spoken long on our natural state before many of them were in tears, and five or six so affected, that they could not refrain from crying aloud to God. When I began praying, their cries increased, so that me voice was soon lost. I have seen no such work among children for eighteen or nineteen years. January 17, 1772. (Hertford) I found the poor children whom Mr. A kept at school were increased to about thirty boys and girls. I went in immediately to the girls. As soon as I began to
speak, some of them burst into tears, and their emotion rose higher and higher. But it was kept within bounds until I began to pray. A cry then arose, which spread from one to another, till almost all cried aloud for mercy, and would not be comforted. But how the scene was changed when I went to the boys! They seemed as dead as stones, and scarce appeared to mind anything that was said, nay, some of them could hardly refrain from laughter. However, I spoke on, and set before them the terrors of the Lord. Presently one was cut to the heart,
soon after another, and another. In ten minutes the far greater part of them were affected as the girls had been. Except at Kingswood, I have seen not such work of God upon children for above thirty years. Tamera Kraft has 30 years experience in children’s ministry and founded Revival Fire Kids Ministry in 2007 in her hometown of Akron, Ohio. Tamera received the Church of God National Children’s Leader’s Association Shepherd’s Cup in 2007 for lifetime achievement and advancement in children’s ministry.

Desiring God
t was always winter, but never Christmas. In C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the land of Narnia was under the cruel reign of the White Witch. But Aslan was on the move. When the witch and lion finally meet, the witch says to Aslan that one of the children, Edmund, has been found to be a traitor. The law of Narnia is that anyone who is a traitor belongs to the White Witch, and will be punished with death. So Aslan strikes a deal with the witch and agrees to die in Edmund’s place. But then Aslan comes back from the dead. After he returns, the children are confused. “But what does it all mean?” asked Edmund’s sister, Susan. “It means,” said Aslan,
“that though the Witch knew the Deep Magic, there is a magic deeper still which she did not know: Her knowledge goes back only to the dawn of time. But if she could have looked a little further back, into the stillness and the darkness before Time dawned, she would have read there a different incantation. She would have known that when a willing victim who had committed no treachery was killed in a traitor’s stead, the Table would crack and Death itself would start working backward.” Behind the Curtain of Eternity In this children’s tale, Lewis masterfully gets to the heart of our redemption. And he helps us see the love of the triune God toward us in “the stillness before time dawned.” There, in eternity past, Father and Son and Spirit
conspired to love a people for themselves. They determined both to create us and — knowing that we would bring their good creation to ruin — also decided to set their loving and eternal gaze on us, as particular, chosen, and treasured children. It’s unfortunate that the biblical teaching of “God’s decree” (as theologians have called it) and his predestinating glory has turned sour among so many Christians. When something so biblically rich and spiritually nourishing becomes so distasteful that we refuse to consume it, we need to reconsider our diet. In the Stillness Before Time In the first chapter of Ephesians, the apostle Paul is so overtaken with the majesty of our redemption that he can hardly stop to put a period
behind his statements. So, his one long sentence runs from verse 3 through to verse 11. But what infuses every pore of that one, long sentence is its beginning: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will. (Ephesians 1:3–5) God’s servant is inspired by God’s Spirit to show us what God was doing before the world began. In these verses, we have what only God can give: a glimpse into the eternal moment of his glorious plan. The tri-
une God prepared every detail of the blueprint for his eternal kingdom. Not only did he plan it all, but he himself would work the entirety of that blueprint according to the counsel of his own sovereign will (Ephesians 1:11). Without the solid meat of this biblical truth, our souls eventually will falter. Unless we eavesdrop on eternity, we will develop spiritual cataracts. In order to see clearly, we first need to hear clearly. We must set our minds on the transcendent so that the immanent can take its proper place in our lives. Not to Us, O Lord Paul begins by ascribing blessing to God the Father because of what he has accomplished in his Son. But Paul won’t let us focus that accomplishment on us. His immediate interest is not in the benefits we receive
from Christ, important as those are. His mind moves immediately from praising God to God’s eternal choice. Paul’s interest is to help us see that what we have from the Father, through the Son, is a result of the Father’s determination “before the foundation of the world” to so love us that he would save us from our sin. We’ve just finished another Olympic year. American athletes earned a record number of medals. These athletes committed the entirety of their lives to their athletic tasks. It is natural, then, that they take pride in their accomplishments. But the Christian can never think that the salvation that we have in Christ is anything like the rigors of athletic training. Not only have we earned nothing of what we have in Christ, but what we have is a result of deci-
sions made by the triune God before we, or anything else in creation, even existed. Who Gets the Glory? Most Christians recognize that, apart from Christ, there is no salvation. But far fewer recognize that our salvation had its beginning before time began. It was there that the triune God determined to love you for eternity. It was there that the Son did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, being obedient to the point of death on a cross (Philippians 2:6–8). Until we see this divine determination as the eternal “ground zero” of our salvation, we simply cannot engage in wholehearted worship of God. If God did not unilaterally, from eternity, instigate his sovereign plan of salvation for me, then my
salvation must, even if in some small way, be “up to me.” If we contribute anything to our salvation, our songs of praise to the glory of God will always be playing our own tune in a minor key. Paul will not let us speak into eternity past; we can look, but not touch. Only in that way will the light shine in the proper place, on the stage and not the audience. Only in that way is it possible to say, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,” without whispering on the side, “And me, too.” K. Indian govt offers to buy 200 foreign combat jets - if they're Made-in-India
neW delhI, OctOber 29 (reuters): India is offering to buy hundreds of fighter planes from foreign manufacturers - as long as the jets are made in India and with a local partner, air force officials say. A deal for 200 singleengine planes produced in India - which the air force says could rise to 300 as it fully phases out ageing Soviet-era aircraft - could be worth anything from $13-$15 billion, experts say, potentially one of the country's biggest military aircraft deals. After a deal to buy highend Rafale planes from France's Dassault was scaled back to just 36 jets last month, the Indian Air Force is desperately trying to speed up other acquisitions and arrest a fall in operational strength, now a third less than required to face both China and Pakistan. But Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration wants any further military planes to be built in India with an Indian partner to kickstart a domestic aircraft industry, and end an expen-
Only two of those Light Combat Aircraft, called Tejas, have been delivered to the air force which has ordered 140 of them. The Indian Air Force is down to 32 operational squadrons compared with the 45 it has said are necessary, and in March the vice chief Air Marshal B.S. Dhanoa told parliament's defence committee that it didn't have the operational strength to fight a two front war against China and Pakistan.

sive addiction to imports. Lockheed Martin said it is interested in setting up a production line for its F-16 plane in India for not just the Indian military, but also for export. And Sweden's Saab has offered a rival production line for its Gripen aircraft, setting up an early contest for one of the biggest military plane deals in play. "The immediate short-
fall is 200. That would be the minimum we would be looking at," said an air officer briefed on the Make-in-India plans under which a foreign manufacturer will partner local firms to build the aircraft with technology transfer. India's defence ministry has written to several companies asking if they would be willing to set up an assembly line for single-
engine fighter planes in India and the amount of technology transfer that would happen, another government source said. "We are testing the waters, testing the foreign firms' willingness to move production here and to find out their expectations," the person said.
nally planned for 126 Rafale twin-engine fighters from Dassault, but the two sides could not agree on the terms of local production with a state-run Indian firm and settled for 36 planes in a fly-away condition. Adding to the military's problems is India's threedecade effort to build a single-engine fighter of its own OPeratiOnaL GaPS which was meant to be the India's air force origi- backbone of the air force.
jet makerS reSPOnd Saab said it was ready to not only produce its frontline Gripen fighter in India, but help build a local aviation industry base. "We are very experienced in transfer of technology – our way of working involves extensive cooperation with our partners to establish a complete ecosystem, not just an assembly line," said Jan Widerström, Chairman and Managing Director, Saab India Technologies. He confirmed Saab had received the letter from
the Indian government seeking a fourth generation fighter. A source close to the company said that while there was no minimum order set in stone for it to lay down a production line, they would expect to build at least 100 planes at the facility. Lockheed Martin said it had responded to the defence ministry's letter with an offer to transfer the entire production of its F-16 fighter to India. "Exclusive F-16 production in India would make India home to the world's only F-16 production facility, a leading exporter of advanced fighter aircraft, and offer Indian industry the opportunity to become an integral part of the world's largest fighter aircraft supply chain," Abhay Paranjape, National Executive for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Business Development in India said in an email. U.S. tOP SUPPLier Lockheed's offer comes on the back of expanding U.S.-India military ties in which Wash-
ington has emerged as India's top arms supplier in recent years, ousting old ally Russia. Earlier this year Boeing also offered India its twinengine F/A-18 Hornets, but the level of technology transfer was not clear. India has never previously attempted to build a modern aircraft production line, whether military or civilian. State-run Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) has assembled Russian combat jets including the Su-30, but these are under licensed production. "We have never had control over technology. This represents the most serious attempt to build a domestic base. A full or a near-full tech transfer lays the ground for further development," said retired Indian air marshal M. Matheswaran, a former adviser at HAL. He said the Indian government would be looking at producing at least 200 fighters, and then probably some more, to make up for the decades of delay in modernising the air force.

IslAMAbAd, OctOber 29 (IAns): Indian High Commission official Surjeet Singh, who was declared persona non grata by Pakistan in a retaliatory action two days ago, left the country with his family on Saturday, a media report said. Surjeet Singh was declared persona non grata on October 27 and told to leave Pakistan in 48 hours by the Foreign Office, Geo News reported. Singh's expulsion orders came within hours of India asking that a Pakistani High Commission official leave India for allegedly running a spy ring. Pakistan Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry had summoned Indian High Commissioner Gautam Bambawale in Islamabad on Thursday and declared Surjeet Singh as persona non grata and asked that he leave the country by Saturday. The Pakistani Foreign Office in a statement said: "The Foreign Secretary expressed deep concern over the activities of the Indian official that were in violation of the Vienna Convention and the established diplomatic norms." The action came hours after Indian Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar summoned Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit in New Delhi that day to protest against Mehmood Akhtar, a visa officer at the Pakistan High Commission, who India accused of spying. Basit was told that Akhtar had been declared persona non grata and should leave India by October 29. Pakistan has denied the espionage charges levelled against Akhtar as "false and unsubstantiated", and alleged that Indian police "manhandled" him. Akhtar was accused of obtaining Indian defence documents. He was released as he is entitled to diplomatic immunity. India asked him to leave the country in 48 hours. India said that Akhtar was the "kingpin" of a spying network that was active for 18 months. The Pakistan Foreign Ministry said the Akhtar was detained for

Smoke from firecracker Snake = 464 cigarettes Swagata Yadavar IndiaSpend and IANS
Would you be comfortable sending your child into a room filled with smoke from 464 cigarettes? That is equivalent to the amount of particulate matter less than 2.5 microns (PM 2.5) emitted by the popular firecracker called a snake tablet. Six popular firecrackers -- the snake tablet, the laad (string of 1,000 crackers), fuljhadi (sparkler), the pul-pul (string sparkler), the anar (flower-pot), the chakri (spinning firecracker) -- emit particulate matter 200 to 2,000 times the safe limits as designated by the World Health Organization (WHO), according to a 2016 study by Pune's Chest Research Foundation and students from the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences of the University of Pune. The study used a light-scattering photometer, which counts the number of particles and converts them into mass, then expressed as µg/m³. The photometer recorded minute-by-minute levels of PM 2.5 over the duration of the study. The firecrackers tested were kept at distances normally kept by those who light them: For instance, the fuljhadi was kept at a distance of 1 ft, while the laad and anar were kept at
a distance of 6 ft. The study found the snake tablet produced the highest amount of PM 2.5, followed by the laad, pulpul, fuljhadi, chakri and anar. IndiaSpend analysed the study results and compared them to the PM 2.5 emitted by a single cigarette in a closed room of 50 m³, as a 2014 study published in medical journal Tumori did, to get the equivalent of cigarettes inhaled. Although the snake tablet burnt for only nine seconds, it produced the highest peak of PM 2.5 (64,500 mcg/m3) -the equivalent of smoke from 464 cigarettes -- while the laad, which burnt for 48 seconds, produced high PM 2.5 levels of 38,540 µg/m³, equivalent to particulate matter emitted by 277 cigarettes. The snake, laad and pul-pul were the top three PM 2.5 producers, while the anar produced the lowest amount of PM 2.5. The anar perhaps produced the lowest levels because the smoke was measured at a height of 3 ft and a distance of 6 ft or it had better combustion, the researchers inferred. In general, particulate matter is considered dangerous to humans since it can reach the deepest portions of the lung. It is declared as a class 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Re-

search on Cancer and is also linked to heart disease and respiratory ailments. Children with weak immune and respiratory responses are particularly vulnerable. "Children, in particular, burn the fuljhhadi, the pul-pul and the snake tablet barely a foot or two away from them, and in doing so, inhale a large number of smoke particles that reach deep into their lungs," Sneha Limaye, senior scientist at the Chest Research Foundation, told IndiaSpend.
The levels of PM 2.5 were measured only when an individual firecracker was burnt, but in real terms, many people burn many firecrackers together, which means the cumulative levels of PM 2.5 could reach "extremely high levels", the researchers wrote. Firecrackers not only release particulate matter but also other harmful gases, such as nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide. A 2014 study found that air pollutants were two to six times higher during Diwali than on normal days.
AurAngAbAd (MAhArAshtrA), OctOber 29 (IAns): A major fire broke out in a temporary firecrackers market in this Maharashtra city on Saturday morning, destroying over 200 big and small shops and over 50 vehicles, officials said. Barring minor burns to a dozen persons, no casualties were initiallu reported in the incident as almost shopkeepers and customers managed to escape to safety. However, several hours later, at least two persons are reported missing and efforts are on to trace them, officials said. At least a dozen four-wheelers, around 10 three-wheelers (autorickshaws) and more than two dozen two-wheelers parked in the vicinity were engulfed in the blaze and destroyed. The blaze occurred in the Aurangpura annual Diwali fire-
crackers market at the Zilla Parishad ground, due to a suspected short circuit in a couple of stalls in the centre, as per preliminary investigations, said officials. With loud booming sounds, rockets taking off in all directions and other fireworks getting lit, the fire quickly spread and engulfed the entire market where the stalls were erected close to each other. Eyewitnesses said thick black, toxic smoke billowed in the skies which could be seen several kms away while the panicky shopkeepers and customers ran helter-skelter to safety. Hundreds of scared people living in the vicinity of the ground ran out of their homes to safety even as firemen battled the blaze. Locals estimate the losses to firecrackers stocks and other materials in excess of several crores of rupees.

Clinton email problem resurfaces as FBI to investigate more emails WASHINGTON/NEW YORK, OcTObER 29 (REuTERS): The FBI is investigating more emails as part of a probe into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email system, it said on Friday, in a new twist that could damage the Democratic candidate in the 2016 presidential race. Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey said in a letter to senior lawmakers that the agency would determine whether the additional emails contained classified information, adding that he did not know “how long it will take us to complete this additional work.” The announcement came as Clinton and Republican opponent Donald Trump enter the final stretch of campaigning ahead of the Nov. 8 election. In a news conference late on Friday in Des Moines, Iowa, Clinton urged Comey to release more details about what the FBI was looking for in the newly discovered emails. She leads Trump in opinion polls after a bruising campaign in which she has struggled to convince voters that she is trustworthy and honest. Fresh revelations about her use of email are unlikely to assuage those concerns, and questions around the FBI investigation will now likely dog her in the coming days as she campaigns across battleground states. U.S. stocks immediately fell sharply on the news, but went on to partially recover. The FBI spent about a year investigating Clinton’s use of the unauthorised server at her home in Chappaqua,

New York, while she was U.S. secretary of state after classified government secrets were found in some of her emails. Comey said in July that while “there is evidence of potential violations of the statutes regarding the handling of classified information, our judgement is that no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case.” Although Comey recommended no criminal charges be brought against Clinton, Trump has repeatedly said her email practices are criminal and should disqualify her for office. He seized on Friday’s development at rallies in Maine and New Hampshire. “This is the biggest political scandal since Watergate, and I’m sure it will be properly handled from this point forward,” Trump told
a crowd in Lisbon, Maine. “We hope that all, all justice will be fully served,” he said. Supporters cheered his words and chanted, “Lock her up.” Clinton said she had learnt of the newly discovered emails from news reports. “I’m confident whatever they are will not change the conclusion reached in July,” she said. “That’s why it’s incumbent upon the FBI to tell us what’s going on.” WEINER Two sources close to the investigation said the latest emails were discovered not during an investigation into Clinton, but rather as part of a separate probe into Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of top Clinton aide Huma Abedin. The FBI has been inves-
tigating illicit text messages allegedly sent from Weiner to a 15-year-old girl in North Carolina, and found the Clinton emails on a device related to that investigation, the sources said. Abedin told federal investigators in April that she used several email accounts for her work, including a Yahoo email, according to a summary of the interview released by the FBI in September. She said it was difficult to print from the State Department’s email system so she routinely forwarded documents to her private accounts when she needed to print them out, according to the summary. Abedin announced her separation from Weiner in August after a sex scandal similar to an earlier inci-
cEDAR RAPIDS, OcTObER 29 (REuTERS): U.S. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump shifted quickly on Friday to take advantage of a new twist in Democrat Hillary Clinton’s longrunning email saga, seeking a much-needed boost in the campaign’s waning days. The FBI’s disclosure that it is investigating more emails as part of a probe into Clinton’s use of a private email server gave fresh energy to Trump. At rallies in New Hampshire, Maine and Iowa, Trump hit hard on his message that Clinton is a corrupt leader who cannot be trusted and he pulled back a bit on his charge that the political system is rigged against him. Trump called the new development part of “the biggest political scandal since Watergate,” the 1970s scandal that forced the resignation of Republican President Richard Nixon. Trump abruptly changed his tune after repeatedly attacking FBI Director James Comey in the last three months for not indicting Clinton for her handling of classified information while U.S. secretary of state from 2009 to 2013. “As you know, I’ve had plenty of words about the FBI lately, but I give them great credit for hav-
dent that led him to resign from the U.S. Congress. Lawyers representing Abedin did not respond to questions sent by email on Friday. Weiner did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment, and he did not respond to phone calls. Hank Sheinkopf, a Democratic strategist who had previously advised former President Bill Clinton but has no role with Hillary Clinton’s campaign, said the linking of Clinton’s email woes with Weiner’s sex scandals made it harder for her campaign to distinguish itself from Trump’s sex scandals. “The whole campaign is now smeared with sex, corruption and scandal,” he said. “Nobody remembers the beginning of something, they only remember the
end. What are they going to remember? They’re all the same: sex, scandal, corruption, emails. People are going to have trouble sorting out all this information.” “EXTRAORDINARY” Clinton’s campaign chairman, John Podesta, said it was “extraordinary” for the FBI to release the letter so close to the end of a hotly contested election. “The Director owes it to the American people to immediately provide the full details of what he is now examining,” Podesta said in a statement. “We are confident this will not produce any conclusions different from the one the FBI reached in July.” Clinton has repeatedly apologised for using the private email server in her home
ing the courage to right this horrible wrong. Justice will prevail,” Trump said in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Trump has spent weeks railing about a “rigged system,” accusing the Clinton campaign of coordinating attacks on him with the U.S. news media after a 2005 video surfaced of him boasting about groping women. “It might not be as rigged as I thought,” Trump told a crowd in Manchester, New Hampshire. By Cedar Rapids, however, he was still criticizing “the corrupt political class” and calling the news media dishonest. At each stop, Trump’s supporters cheered loudly and chanted “lock her up” when the New York businessman talked about Clinton’s new headache, a sign that his boosters see the importance of some good news for his campaign with 10 days left until the Nov. 8 election. Trump noted that he is competitive in opinion polls nationally and in some states where the election is likely to be decided, but admitted he has got some distance to go. The new disclosures, he said, might help him. “We have gaps but we are really moving and I just wanted to say that because I don’t know what’s going to happen now,” he said.
instead of a government email account for her work as secretary of state from 2009 to 2013. She has said she did not knowingly send or receive classified information. While the FBI probe of new emails will likely prove a distraction to Clinton in the coming days, it was unclear what impact it would have when Americans go to the polls. Election experts say about 20 percent of ballots have already been cast, as more Americans vote by mail or go to the polls early. “A lot of concern about the emails has already been baked into this electoral cake I think,” said Linda Fowler, a professor of government at Dartmouth College. “They know she did it, they know it was inappropriate and, failing some sensational revela-
tion on Nov. 6, it’s hard to see that it’s going to make that big a difference.” Still, Republican lawmakers, who are facing a difficult fight to keep their majorities in both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, leaped to condemn Clinton. House Speaker Paul Ryan reiterated his call that the Democratic nominee be barred from briefings involving classified information until the investigation is over. Reince Priebus, the head of the Republican National Committee, said the FBI’s decision to look into the emails shows “how serious this discovery must be.” Clinton did not respond to reporters’ shouted questions about the news when she left her plane for a campaign stop in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
US challenges China’s imports of Thais gather at palace to view late king’s funeral urn North Korean coal amid UN sanctions bEIJING, OcTObER 29 (REuTERS): China’s imports of North Korean coal run counter to global sanctions, a senior U.S. official said on Saturday, adding that a U.S. missile system deployed in South Korea should “motivate” Beijing to pressure Pyongyang over its nuclear programme. North Korea’s exports of coal to China provide a lifeline for the country and are also seen by the United States as a crucial area where Beijing has leverage over its neighbour, which has carried out a series of missile and nuclear tests in defiance of international sanctions. China announced in April that it would ban North Korean coal imports to comply with U.N. sanctions, though it made exemptions for deliveries intended for “livelihood purposes”. Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken told journalists that China had reversed the burden of proof put for-
ward under U.N. Security Council resolution 2270 adopted in March in response to a North Korean nuclear test. “The plain language of 2270 makes it very clear that the export of coal, or the importation of coal if you are China, is prohibited unless you can demonstrate that the transaction in question goes to the livelihood of the North Korean people,” Blinken said in Beijing after visits to Japan and South Korea. “The Chinese have reversed the presumption and their approach has been that the trade in coal is allowed unless you can demonstrate that it is going to the weapons programme. But that’s not what 2270 says,” he said. Coal is particularly important to the economic health of North Korea because it is one of its only sources of hard currency. China imported $1 billion worth of North Korean coal in 2015, according to Chinese customs data. Beijing fears strengthening sanctions could lead to collapse in North
Korea, sending a flood of refugees across the border into China, and it also believes the United States and South Korea share responsibility for growing tensions in the region. North Korea’s fourth nuclear test in January was followed by a satellite launch, a string of tests of various missiles, and its fifth and largest nuclear test in September. China has repeatedly expressed anger at the United States and South Korea for their decision to deploy the U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) system in the South to counter threats from North Korea. Beijing worries that the system’s powerful radar will compromise China’s security. Blinken said THAAD “was the latest but not the last defensive step” that the U.S. would take if the North Korean nuclear threat persists, and that hopefully it would “motivate China to work with us to change the conduct of the North Korean regime”.
bANGKOK, OcTObER 29 (REuTERS): Tens of thousands of Thais gathered at Bangkok’s glittering Grand Palace on Saturday hoping to pay their respects before the funeral urn of late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world’s longestreigning monarch. King Bhumibol, 88, died on Oct. 13 after reigning for seven decades as a constitutional monarch and unifying figure in the politically febrile country. Thailand’s military-led government has declared a year-long period of mourning for the late king, formally known as Rama IX, and many Thais are wearing black as a sign of respect. About 80,000 mourners arrived at the palace on Saturday morning, deputy police spokesman Major
General Songpol Wattanachai told Reuters. Daily religious rites are taking place in the hall, where the king’s body lies in state, and senior members of the royal family have taken turns attending daily, amid chanting by Buddhist monks. The bodies of highranking Thai royals traditionally used to be placed in a golden urn. But palace officials said that tradition would no longer upheld and the king’s body would be placed in a coffin with the symbolic urn nearby. Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, 64, is the king’s designated successor, but junta chief Prayuth Chan-ocha told the country hours after the king’s death that the prince had informed him he would delay his ascension to the
Thousands protest in South Korea, demand president quit over scandal SEOuL, OcTObER 29 (REuTERS): Thousands of South Koreans rallied in Seoul on Saturday demanding the resignation of President Park Geun-hye, as a crisis deepened over allegations a friend exerted inappropriate influence over her and interfered in state affairs. The street protest came as prosecutors investigate presidential aides and other officials to determine whether they broke the law to allow Park’s friend, Choi Soon-sil, to wield undue influence and gain financially. Angry Koreans say Park betrayed public trust and mismanaged the government, and has lost a mandate to lead the country. “She must step down,” Lee Jae-myung, mayor of Seongnam city south of Seoul and a vocal critic of the government, said to a loud cheer from the crowd. “If Park Geun-hye is no longer president, will our lives be any worse off and
Friday she ordered her senior secretaries to tender their resignations, and she will reshuffle the office in the near future. Her chief of staff separately offered to resign earlier, the office said. The deepening crisis over Choi has sent Park’s public support to an alltime low. In one opinion poll, more than 40 percent of respondents said Park should resign or be impeached.

will the tension with North Korea be any worse?” he asked the crowd, which responded “No!” About 8,000 people attended the rally, according to police, organised by a group of left-leaning civic groups. Organisers said up to 30,000 people took part
in the march through the capital. “It’s become clear the people made a wrong decision and picked a wrong president,” Jeong Hongwoo, 22, told Reuters at the rally. Police in riot gear faced some protesters as they
tried to march on the presidential Blue House. Park is in the fourth year of a 5-year one-term presidency. Opposition parties have demanded a thorough investigation, but have not raised the possibility of impeaching her. Park’s office said late on
COOPERATING WITH PROBE Prosecutors are investigating two of Park’s aides who allegedly helped Choi get access to drafts of Park’s speeches and set up two foundations with about 50 billion won ($44 million) in contributions from conglomerates that she later benefited from, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported. The presidential office said it was cooperating with the prosecutors’ investiga-
tion, including a request for documents. A public apology by Park on Tuesday - for giving Choi access to draft speeches during the early months of her presidency - has done little to deflect demands that the president reveal the full extent of her ties with Choi and whether Choi gained favours from the relationship. Choi said in a newspaper interview on Thursday from Germany, where she was staying, that she read and revised Park’s speeches early in the presidential term, but denied all allegations she interfered in state affairs. Park is the latest South Korean leader to be embroiled in scandal involving family or friends. As well as demanding Park stand down, civic groups and students want criminal charges brought against her aides and others who helped Choi have access to government documents.
throne to give him time to mourn his father. Prayuth said last week the prince could become king in 7 to 15 days after the king’s death, or later. His coronation, however, cannot take place until after the royal cremation, in a year’s time. Since taking power in a May 2014 coup, the military,
which sees itself the protector of the monarchy, has cracked down on perceived royal critics and has shown it is highly sensitive to any discussion of the monarchy and succession. Criticism of the king, queen, heir or regent is a crime punishable by up to 15 years in prison for each offence.
Imran Khan vows to go ahead with Islamabad ‘lockdown’ Nov 2 ISLAmAbAD, OcTObER 29 (IANS): Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan on Saturday vowed to go ahead with his plans of a ‘lockdown’ of Islamabad on November 2 to demand “accountability” of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif over alleged corruption. Talking to reporters near his Bani Gala residence, Khan advised PTI supporters to travel in groups, saying when they arrive in small numbers the police “puts them in jail”. He asked the party supporters to make sure to avoid arrests. He said the Sharif family is the quintessence of corruption in Pakistan. Reiterating his plans to put up a grand show in Islamabad on November 2, Khan said: “This is Nawaz Sharif’s dictatorship, not a democracy... we will show Nawaz Sharif on Nov 2 what democracy is.” He asked the supporters, many of whom set up camps and spent the night near his residence, about their comfort and directed his party managers to ensure their well being. Khan has vowed to lead a demonstration in Islamabad on November 2 to demand Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif step down over revelations in the Panama Papers that his family has offshore bank accounts. Khan was under virtual house arrest with a heavy contingent of police surrounding his house in Banni Gala, a leafy suburb of Islamabad, preventing him from leaving -- though he has not been formally arrested. On Friday, clashes took place between police and opposition party supporters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, with dozens arrested ahead of the planned protest by cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan aimed at unseating the government. PTI and Pakistan government have locked horns since the names of members of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s family appeared in the Panama Papers leaks.

irving's three-point dagger sinks raptors
Los AngeLes, october 29 (AFP): Kyrie Irving is picking up right where he left off last season, displaying the same late-game composure that allows him to sink clutch baskets for the Cleveland Cavaliers. With the game tied 9191, Irving showed off his steely nerve by draining a three pointer with 44 seconds left to lift the Cavaliers to a 94-91 win over the Toronto Raptors on Friday night. Irving's dagger came from the top of the key and it was none other than LeBron James who fed him the ball. "I tried to make a move for myself, get into the seams, but when I seen the defense collapse, I know where my guy was going to be," James said. "He's a big-time player and it was a big-time moment and he knocked it down." Irving's basket brought back memories of another game winner, in game seven of the 2016 NBA finals when he nailed a step-back three from the right side over Golden State star Stephen Curry. James and Irving combined for 47 points as the Cavaliers squeezed past the Raptors in a rematch of last season's Eastern Con-

points and seven rebounds while Kyle Lowry added 17 points and four assists as the Raptors lost for the first time this season. In New Orleans, Kevin Durant scored 30 points and Klay Thompson had 28 as Golden State held off Anthony Davis and the Pelicans with a 122-114 victory. en steals in a season-opening 107-102 loss to Denver on Wednesday. In Detroit, Tobias Harris haunted his former team by scoring 18 points as the Detroit Pistons built a 23-point halftime lead and then cruised to a 108-92 win over the Orlando Magic. Westbrook takes triple-double heroics to another level
okLAhomA city, october 29 (AFP): Russell Westbrook doesn't appear to be missing the one-two punch he formed with ex-teammate Kevin Durant as the Oklahoma City Thunder guard exploded for a 51-point triple double against Phoenix. Westbrook posted the first 50-point triple double since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar during the 1974-75 NBA season as he began the postDurant era by powering the Thunder to back-to-back wins. Westbrook, who just missed a triple double in the season opener against Philadelphia, lit Phoenix up for 51 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists as the Thunder won 113-110 in overtime in front of a crowd of 18,200
at the Chesapeake Energy Arena. After eight seasons together in Oklahoma City, Westbrook is playing without Durant who signed with the Golden State Warriors in the offseason. Durant or no Durant, over the last two seasons no player has recorded more triple-doubles than Westbrook. He tallied 18 last season and now has 38 in his career. Thunder guard Victor Oladipo added 21 points as no other Oklahoma City player scored in double figures. The Suns were led by guard TJ Warren's 30 points and nine rebounds. Sharing of a burden with human family Rev. L. Suohie Mhasi
Knowing God is the only answer 1. The one who lives from everlasting to everlasting alone is Omniscient and Omnipotent and by his infinite life, wisdom and power alone the earth, the sun, the moon, the stars and the heavens were formed by His command out of nothing into existence forever. So the whole universe is existing by three words which are “the Life, Wisdom and Power of God and no creation in the universe is out of the parameter of the three words: Life, Wisdom and Power.” 2. Mankind needs relationship with God to live in peace and order, and the law of relationship with God is, “KNOW GOD, BELIEVE IN HIM, FEAR HIM and OBEY HIM.” The primary need for all human beings on the earth is “ KNOW GOD“ because Knowing God is the door through which alone one can enter into relationship with God and without knowing God nobody can have relationship with Him. So all men and women in the world have to give first priority to seeking to know who the Creator really is. This is the only way of restoration of mankind to the right place before God.
FATHER -----The Inspiration Dharmadhaj Sonowal Dimapur
You've changed my life around, And turned my frown upside down. You have showed me the way, So that I will never stray. At times when I was torn and weak, and could not bear the stress. You always gave your all to me , never any less. When I needed someone, You were the one. When I felt fear , You were always here. When I was falling through the cracks, You always had my back. You made me happy when I was sad, You made me laugh when I was mad, You made me believe and not give up; You helped me to get better, and stop what I regret. You listened to my problems,; in a kind and caring way I trust you with my secrets, that no one has been told. I trust you with my feelings, and in my heart, Your words I'll take, until I'm grey and old. Thank you Dear Father.....

ilence does not mean to say, yes I betrayed Jesus. Silence is a secret weapon that strikes you hard to speak out the truth in itself. Your implications and allegations is not a victory. Your knowledge and intelligences is not a wisdom. Your imaginations and suspicious is not a vision. You cannot order your fellow country-men to jump into the ocean unless you have guaranteed the danger of not getting drown. How righteous and honest you may think and act to transform the devils life, it will only invite the infamous omens promising you to a hell of fire and blood. The most depriving and disastrous life of devil was when Jesus underwent fasting for 40 days. Let Naga leaders don’t eat away the One and Only unique History by claiming your historical rights always without doing your responsibilities to protect your unique political history. This political history has made Nagas so common and so unique as compared to rest of the Indian states. Such unique political history came into existence because our forefathers could not withstand the inhuman treatment melted upon by the main land India. So the only alternative way was to de-
A
gentleman named Thomas (no last name given), representing the NNC, sent in a short article in response to my article of yesterday titled, “Reply to Kaka Iralu's 'The desecration of political truths and justice in Nagaland'.” Iralu himself has replied to my article, and I will respond to his reply in a separate article. First, Thomas is not a positive reflection on his fellow NNC members, in that he spelled my name three different ways in the less than 20 lines that make up his article. Perhaps the NNC should choose someone who has the capacity to show respect to myself, as I hope to show him, by paying more attention to what he is writing and who he is writing to. Second, he says that I “stated that the Nagas under the so-called Indian state are not become [Thomas's words] prosperous but corrupted. That is true.” But that is NOT what I said. I said that the corruption and violence in Naga society was the result of the corruption and violence of the NSCN-IM, which controls all of Nagaland, including the corrupt and
fect/ stay away from the Union of India to revolt against and be free. But, today our Naga society is witnessing and experiencing rising birth rate of multiple Nationalist Groups, Politicians, Churches and Civil Organizations entitled with branded names which are universally accepted as quick fix reformation, unification , Accords Accepted, not accepted Accords, No.1.2 People’s front, support groups and at last dilemma groups within. May be our Naga leaders were trying to avoid failures. So they came up with an idea of conspiring, just to confuse and to feel oneself partially satisfied by condemning from the very Group or organization you just defected to form another. Instead of forming another new self-style National group or Organization it was far better to defect to safe guard common people’s interest. The ugliest part is you feel satisfied or disappointed on the pretext that the other opponent is gaining or losing support. At this point defection is something that gives you a freedom to decide whom to choose or something that you overcome dishonor and disrespect. It depends on the individuals on what terms and conditions they defected. With free cease fire packages by the GOI also played a vital role, some had formed for power and greed and some
for recognitions and some for real Naga people. It is a best opportune time for the common people to decide who is for the people and who rejects people’s wishes and who just seat ideal acting as lawyers? Because throwing stones in the air will just destroy neighbor’s property because it just falls back again. You cannot expect everything to come in our own ways. And you cannot expect everything from God too, 99% should come through your perspirations and remaining expect inspirations from God. When you are a true leader your life is like a tree which bears much fruit. Some will try to cut down the branches, some even the whole tree. You may be called in any manner but remember you are like the waters that flows deep beneath the ocean that makes the ocean so deep and big in the surface. To work for peace, unity is not so easy, it is like a humble work to enter the Kingdom of God leaving all your comforts behind. You cannot please everyone to follow. You cannot always stop and throw stones to very dog that barks. Even God was not able to convince His own creations to convert rather they rejected, betrayed and crucified but, salvation was given to all Mankind. Heaven is an open Door Policy for us all. You don’t need to consult with Hin-

cowardly members of the state assembly, and controls the Nagas of Manipur the same way. Thomas also quotes me, correctly, as saying that, “A separate Naga nation will never happen....” But I have NEVER said that the Nagas do not deserve a separate nation. I have made clear, from the very first article that was published in “The Morung Express,” on April 4, 2016, that I am taking no position on the issue of whether the Naga people deserve a separate nation. What I have stated, again and again, is that they will never get such a separate nation because the government of India (GoI) will never agree to such a nation. I then have argued that to drag the Naga people into a fight with the GoI over the Naga demand for such a nation will lead to the destruction of the Naga people.
In other words, I am fighting for the life of the Nagas, not against a nation for the Nagas. For all my arguments on these issues, please see my previous articles. Two more points. First, it seems strange to me that someone from the NNC is writing an article against my position, when my article attacks the NSCN-IM, an organization that has taken a position that the NNC committed treason against the nationalist movement when it participated in the peace accord of 1964 with representatives of the GoI. In May, 2015 I spent a number of hours talking (through an interpreter) with L. Kaiso, then the secretary of the NNC. I found him intelligent, caring, open to reason and discussion, and kind enough when, upon my leaving, he gave me one of his canes, which even now sits in my living room
dus nor needs a Muslim consultant. Noah Ark was built to safe God’s own creations but it reads that only those who entered the ark was safe and then new world was born. God might have already chosen a Leader for Nagas but even forbids to speak it out through prophets because of our evil intensions. Let our Naga leaders not fail today to lubricate God tomorrow with fasting and prayer of repentance. We have consecutively failed His wisdom for Free Naga Homeland and subsequently with all Agreements. To decide the fate of Nagas one does not need a certificates of approval. If at all Naga political solution is to take place with a condition one after the other then, Nagas should have as many factions as possible. Because the blood in your fathers hand is also the same blood that flows in you. Avoidable media wars and blame game has become so popular which does not serve any purpose. So, instead of opening up a Pandora box, the Naga leaders at different levels should willingly accept the responsibilities to contribute more ideas and suggestions in the interest of the common Naga people. Just do your best to bring what is best for the common Naga people. Let the walls of dis-unity within fall, and let the cocoon of hatred and revenge suffer. here in Albany, New York. My hours in the Chedema Peace Camp, not just with Mr. Kaiso but with others living there, was a few of the most precious hours that I've spent in my four previous trips to Nagaland. As far as Thomas's allegation that I am being “bribed by India to write against the Naga nationalism,” I await proof of this allegation, from Thomas or anyone else. I am a 73-year-old retired American lawyer and a registered nurse, who discovered Nagaland, discovered a wonderful culture, and a number of Nagas who I now proudly call my friends, and am fighting to keep them alive and well in the midst of a nationalist craze that is, in my opinion, going to bring them nothing but destruction. I also am fighting to have the honest Nagas of both Nagaland and Manipur break the stranglehold of corruption and violence that the NSCN-IM has on their throats. If the NSCN-IM disagrees with me, then THEY should address my allegations, rather than leaving it to someone from an organization that they themselves have accused of betraying the Naga people.

For the love of Music, People, Life!!! ‘Brother Jack’
Akangchila Longchar Morung Express News
Jack Pucho with his wife Annie and their three sons.
- there is only one by that name who brings wonderful smiles and fills hearts with warmth and happiness. A mentor to youngsters, he has inspired, influenced and shaped numerous lives through his faith and his gift of music. Most people might remember him as a young worship leader at the Spirit of Faith Church in Dimapur during its early beginnings, when it used to be situated at IMC Hall, Dimapur. Jack Pucho laughed at this reference and recollects how he began serving in the ministry. He shared that initially, everyone had to help out with the small tasks and even perform menial jobs. “I wasn’t offered the role of a Worship Leader just like that. We had to work and earn it. Working alongside Pastor John Roughton has been a blessing for me and he is my biggest mentor,” he said. 18 years working for the ministry of God, Brother Jack is a remarkable preacher and teacher of the word. He is also the co-partner of a worship resource school called “The Warehouse” which envisions training and igniting young souls in the discipline of worship ministry as a worship leader, pastor, songwriter, artist, technician, or a musician. Talking about this, he adds, “This has been a calling in my heart from God for so long and I could not ignore it anymore. Music is a tool and has the power to give colour to our imagination and to our emotions. But music alone definitely cannot save a person or the world. I believe that it should help strengthen our journey towards understanding the Lord.” His unselfish dedication, both to God and the craft of music has earned him the love and respect from fellow believers and the music fraternity. An accomplished musician, songwriter, composer, and music teacher, he is a pioneer with more than two decades of experience performing and teaching music. He has also been instrumental in the management of numerous worship teams and concerts in Nagaland. “My father always told me that I was born singing,” Jack said fondly. He recounts a central moment in his life, when still a small child, he met with an unfortunate accident which left his right leg disabled. Right after this incident, for several years, he had to visit numerous hospitals for treatment, but even that couldn’t get him to stop
singing. He is said to have enthralled everyone with his gift of music, and capturing the hearts of people with his infectious positive personality. This prompted his father to buy Jack an acoustic guitar, which filled his early days of school and high school with a lot of singing performances. Like any young man, he also had dreams of becoming a rock star. “But God certainly does have a sense of humour,” he laughed. “I had long hair and enjoyed the music of Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, Poison, Europe etc. But when I joined Patkai Christian College, I started hanging out with the college choir, which gave me a sense of purpose. I also had a friend who encouraged me to use my gift of music for the glory of the Lord. At this point of my life, I decided to dedicate my art, my gift of music to give my life to the Lord,” he shared. As an accomplished and dedicated musician, Jack had this to say: “We have to keep growing as musicians. We are very hesitant with coming up with original compositions and style of music. When you’re young and starting out, it’s fine to be inspired by other artists and imitate them but if you’ve been in the industry for 5, 10 or more years and still doing the same thing, then some-
thing is wrong. Because I genuinely feel that you should be able to come up with music that identifies you.” He has recorded two albums “Now and Always” and “Where I Belong”, with the third album to be released soon. Two decades and counting, what gives? To Jack, it’s very simple. The desire to love his family, his Lord and people motivates him to keep singing, praying and work hard. “Life has difficulties, but it is love that keeps me going. There are lots of hurting people out there and I want to help them through music and ministry.” And helping him in this mission is his loving wife Annie, who also joins him in singing and serving the ministry. Brother Jack remains humble, preferring to keep a low profile and simply enjoy doing what he does best- love people, music and life! Looking back, he had this to say: “The best is yet to come. I haven’t finished the race yet… I really believe that I’m still yet to experience the best life has to offer me.” Artists like Jack Pucho, who has given so much to his people and the community should be receiving a bit more accolade, don’t you think?
NGOs want DiCaprio to return ‘corrupt’ earnings

A
n anti-corruption NGO has urged Oscar winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio to "do the right thing" and pay back his earnings from "The Wolf of Wall Street" should the US Justice Department find that they are linked to a multi-billion dollar 1MDB Malaysian corruption scandal. DiCaprio earned at least $25 million from the 2013 film. "If he knows these are corrupt funds, we would very much like to see him return them," Samantha Grant of Transparency International, a Berlin-based non-governmental organisation that looks to combat global corruption and prevent criminal activities arising from it, told hollywoodreporter.com. "If that money is found by the Department of Justice (DOJ) to be corrupt, to not give it back sort of says that money that was due to go to the Malaysian public is sitting in Leonardo DiCaprio's account," Grant added. On October 18, DiCaprio issued his first statement concerning his ties to those allegedly connected to the scandal, including his "The Wolf of Wall Street" producers Riza Aziz and Joey McFarland, who are co-founders of Red Granite, which funded the Martin Scorsese-directed film, and controversial Malaysian businessman Jho Low.

A one and half hour show by Dreamz Unlimited, organised by the Aoyimti Students Union started with a short family satirical scene about a modern middle class family and their problems in their daily life about bad roads, price rise, taxation and never ending donations and membership from various unions in our society. As the show progressed, the audience got to see different acts based on love and rejection, the paradoxes of election system in Naga society and the ever growing IBI issue. It was a potpourri of all the problems in our society, which was of course portrayed in a satirical and comical way. The show, held on October 28, was a success and it was graced by more than 1500 spectators. (Photo by Manen Aier)

Mishra spins India to series win

C M Y K
Visakhapatnam, OctOber 29 (aFp): Leg-spinner Amit Mishra claimed five wickets to skittle New Zealand out for a paltry 79 as India thrashed the Black Caps by 190 runs to clinch the five-match one-day international series 3-2 in Visakhapatnam on Saturday. The visitors, who were chasing a target of 270, registered their lowest ODI total against India as the innings lasted for just 23.1 overs. Mishra, who returned with impressive figures of 5-18 in six overs, claimed 15 wickets in the five matches and was judged the man of the match and the player of the series. Earlier Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli set up the win with their gritty half-centuries to help India post 269 for six after electing to bat first in the series decider. But it was the Mishra-led bowling attack that helped India keep their winning momentum after whitewashing New Zealand in the three Tests. India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni introduced spin into the attack in the ninth over after the pacers sent the New Zealand openers packing. Left-arm spinner Axar Patel got
the big wicket of opposition skipper Kane Williamson for 27 as he mistimed a drive to be caught at long-off. Mishra's double blow in the 16th over to get Ross Taylor (19) and BJ Watling (0) out in the space of three deliveries derailed New Zealand's chase. The visitors slipped to 66 for five. ‘Mishra's beauty is he bowls slow, so as a keeper you have time to recover the ball to stump batsmen. And in tandem with Axar, who bowls flat and quick, it was very good,’ said Dhoni, who affected one stumping off Mishra. Debutant off-spinner Jayant Yadav got his first international wicket after he trapped Corey Anderson for nought. Mishra, who recorded his second five-wicket haul in ODIs, then ran through the New Zealand middle and lower-order as the innings saw a total of five ducks. The Black Caps' previous low against India was their 103 in Chennai in 2010. ‘We expect a lot more of our batting, and losing 8 for 20 or whatever it is is unacceptable. Playing against one of the best sides in the world, there is room to learn,’ said Williamson.
- Sharma-Kohli show On the batting front, Sharma (70) and Kohli (65) put together a 79-run second wicket stand to lay a solid foundation for the middle order. ‘I think Virat was superb with the bat, we got off to a decent start,’ said Dhoni. India were at one point eyeing a bigger score, only to be pulled back by the visiting bowlers, as pacer Trent Boult and leg-spinner Ish Sodhi claimed two wickets each. The in-form Kohli put on 71 runs for the third wicket with Dhoni (41) and played a controlled knock to register his 38th ODI fifty, striking a fine balance between attack and defence. Dhoni, who is trying to settle in his new number four slot, played a watchful innings before being trapped lbw to Mitchell Santner after missing an attempted sweep. New Zealand spinners kept chipping away with Sodhi getting Manish Pandey for nought and then the big wicket of Kohli in the 44th over to check India's surge. However a late assault from Kedar Jadhav, who remained unbeaten on 39, and Patel, who struck an 18-ball 24, gave the hosts' total more muscle on a tricky pitch.
Ronaldo hits hat-trick in Real comeback barcelOna, Oct 29 (reuters): Cristiano Ronaldo answered his critics with a hat-trick as Real Madid came from behind to win 4-1 at Alaves and provisionally go three points clear at the top of La Liga. Alaves forward Deyverson pounced on an error by Real goalkeeper Keylor Navas to give the home side a shock lead in the seventh minute but the Brazilian gave away a controversial penalty in the 17th for handball which Ronaldo calmly converted. The Portuguese put the European champions in charge in the 33rd with a powerful strike that deflected off Zouhair Feddal and beyond the reach of former Real goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco. Pacheco did manage to turn away another penalty by Ronaldo in the second half but Real's all-time top scorer netted his first treble of the season in the 88th after substitute Alvaro Morata had stretched Real's lead four minutes earlier. Real are top of the standings on 24 points, three clear of Sevilla, who drew 1-1 at Sporting Gijon. Champions Barcelona can cut the gap with Real to two points when they host Granada later on Saturday, while Atletico Madrid play Malaga at home.
Arsenal, City triumph, United held
sunderland, OctOber 29 (reuters): Two goals each from Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud, three of them delivered in a devastating sevenminute burst, saw Arsenal romp past Sunderland 4-1 at the Stadium of Light to go top of the Premier League after Saturday's early game. The match turned on the introduction of Giroud as a 69th-minute substitute after a Jermain Defoe penalty had equalised Sanchez's first-half opener to give the home side a flicker of hope. Giroud scored with his opening two touches, first with a superb left-foot shot from a Kieran Gibbs cross on 71 minutes and then with a near-post header from a corner five minutes later. Sanchez scored Arsenal's third goal in seven minutes from close in when Gibbs's shot came back off the post. The easy victory was no more than Arsenal deserved after enjoying 66 percent possession and spurning several chances to finish the game. The defeat will place manager David Moyes under further pressure as he seeks to turn round what is now the worst start to a season after 10 games by any side in Premier League history, inferior to Manchester City in 1995-96 on goal difference. strated his considerable worth to Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola as his brilliant first-half double helped sink West Bromwich to cap the Premier League leaders' return to form. Guardiola's appreciation of his star striker has seemed lukewarm of late, leading to questions over the Argentine's future with City, but the Spaniard could only be grateful for Aguero and two-goal Ilkay Gundogan ending the
worst managerial run of his career. After six matches without a win, City were back to their irresistible early-season best, Aguero striking superbly twice in the space of seven minutes midway through the first half. Aguero also put paid to West Brom's impressive second-half resurgence with the exquisite flick that put in Gundogan for City's third -- the goal that ensures they stay top of the league -- before the Ger-
man international sealed his own double a minute from time. Manchester United stretched their winless Premier League streak to four games after their manager Jose Mourinho and midfielder Ander Herrera were sent off in a 0-0 home draw with Burnley. Referee Mark Clattenburg dismissed Mourinho at halftime after the Portuguese protested over a first-half penalty claim being waved away by the of-
ficial, while Herrera was red-carded for a second bookable foul midway through the second half. United missed a barrage of chances in either half and hit the woodwork twice as they laid siege to Burnley's goal, whose keeper Tom Heaton produced a superb performance against his former club with a string of spectacular saves. The 30-year old, who never got a look-in at United during his 2005-2010 stint at Old Trafford, denied Juan Mata and Zlatan Ibrahimovic three times each, including a breathtaking stop to keep out the latter's close-range overhead kick. Vincent Janssen's first Premier League goal was not enough to give Tottenham Hotspur victory over Leicester City, who fought back with a goal from Ahmed Musa to snatch a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane. Gaston Ramirez scored a magnificent solo goal to set Middlesbrough on their way to their first home win of the Premier League season and bring an end to Bournemouth's fine recent run. Hull City's dismal run of results continued as they went down 1-0 to Watford at Vicarage Road, with defender Michael Dawson put the ball into his own net in the 82nd minute to give the home side victory.
