Kohima, September 19 (mexN): The State Council of Educational Research & Training (SCERT) Nagaland has “blacklisted” a publishing firm, which according to the SCERT had “fraudulently projected itself as the officially recommended publisher of Social Textbook for Classes 5-8 by criminally using the government work order No. SCERT/TB-8/2007-08/ dated 4th October 2007 to print and supply textbooks to private schools inspite of the termination of its contract in 2010.” A n o t i f i cation from the Nagaland SCERT announced the “blacklisting” of the company, one Goyal Brothers Prakashan, New Delhi and informed all concerned that the current officially recommended book for social sciences is “Go for Social Science” published by Goodluck Publishers Ltd, New Delhi. WaShiNGtoN, September 19 (iaNS): Massive galaxies in the universe have stopped making new stars and are instead gulping down nearby galaxies, according to new research. Our own Milky Way is at a tipping point and expected to now grow mainly by eating smaller galaxies, rather than by collecting gas. “The Milky Way has not merged with another large galaxy for a long time, but you can still see remnants of all the old galaxies we have cannibalised,” explained Aaron Robotham from the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) at University of Western Australia. “Our Milky Way is going to eat two nearby dwarf galaxies,” he said.

A lone YES campaign supporter walks down a street in Edinburgh after the result of the Scottish independence referendum, Scotland on September 19. Scottish voters have rejected independence and decided that Scotland will remain part of the United Kingdom. The result announced early Friday was the one favored by Britain’s political leaders, who had campaigned hard in recent weeks to convince Scottish voters to stay. It dashed many Scots’ hopes of breaking free and building their own nation. (AP Photo)
lion but also divided passions of friends and families from the remote Scottish islands of the Atlantic to the tough city estates of Glasgow. Though the break-up of the United Kingdom has been avoided, Britain’s rulers admit the Scottish vote will lead to a reshaping of the union which is the world’s sixth largest economy and a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
Speaking in front of an image of a giant white on blue Scottish flag, Salmond laced his defeat with a warning to British politicians in London that they must respect their last minute promise of more powers for Scotland. “Scotland will expect these to be honoured in rapid course,” he said before walking off the stage, his head bowed. FEDERAL KINGDOM? Opinion polls showing a surge in
Scottish separatist support in the two weeks leading up to the Sept. 18 vote prompted a rushed British pledge to grant more powers to Scotland, a step that has angered some English lawmakers in Westminster. In an effort to deflate that anger, Cameron vowed to forge a new constitutional settlement that would grant Scotland the promised powers but also give powers to England, Wales and
Northern Ireland. “Just as Scotland will vote separately in the Scottish parliament on their issues of tax, spending and welfare, so too England, as well as Wales and Northern Ireland should be able to vote on these issues,” Cameron said. “All this must take place, in tandem with and at the same pace as the settlement for Scotland.” Cast as a constitutional revolution, commentators said Cameron’s pledge of more powers to the constituent parts of the United Kingdom was aimed at sedating ‘the slumbering beast of English nationalism’. U.S. President Barack Obama and European Union leaders had made clear they wanted the United Kingdom to stay together. Marin Schulz, the centre-left speaker of the European Parliament, told German radio that while the referendum had been an internal matter for Britain: “I admit I am relieved by the result.” While Scottish leaders promised to work together, Scots remained divided in joy and disappointment over the fate of their country. “I’m delighted. It’s overwhelming as well. The people listened, they thought about it, and now they have spoken,” said Sheila Gilmore, a Scottishborn Labour lawmaker who welcomed the preservation of the union. But Calum Martin, a 21 year-old history student at Edinburgh University who voted for independence said the question of secession would return. “It’s a disappointing result but it sets the stage for going forward,” Martin said. “As long as there are flaws, there will be calls for independence. You can’t put the genie back in the bottle once it’s out.”
Withdraw Assam police ANGPTA demands ‘genuine nagaland Governor camps from DAB: RALH rights’ of primary teachers seeks daily air service
WoKha, September 19 (mexN): The Ralan Area Lotha Hoho (RALH) has demanded the “withdrawal” of Assam police camps in the Disputed Area Belt (DAB) in the Ralan area. A press note from the RALH informed that the Assam state government “had already establish eleven Assam Armed Police (AAP) camps after the recent incidents between Lotha Naga land owners & disloyal tenants (Adivasis) in B & C sector in Ralan Area.” Whereas, it stated that, “not even a single NAP Camp had been established in the so called Disputed Area Belt (DAB).” “Confirmation may be sought from the SSB presently station in the area,” added the RALH. It further asserted that there is “no question” of NAP personal withdrawing from the Lotha Naga Villages and claimed that “the presence of above 1000 AAP personals in Ralan Area is preventing six Lotha Naga displaced villagers to return home till date.” The RALH called upon the Assam Chief Minister to “respect all the border related agreements and withdraw all the recently established or all the AAP camps established in the entire DAB area.” In case the Assam Government fails to withdraw the same, the RALH urged the Nagaland state government to “establish as many NAP camps as theirs (AAP), after which only the meaning of DAB would truly be established.” The RALH stated that “AAP Jawans are 24X7 on duty protecting or providing security to the Maoist cadres (from Jharkhand & Chhattisgarh) who are operating or taking shelter in Ralan
area in the guise of the surrendered AANLA.” It asserted that all North East states “should join hand to flush out or to stop the dangerous activities/influence of the Maoist operating in the interstate border areas in the entire North East region.” Stop illegal infiltration: UNTABA The United Naga Tribes Association of Border Areas (UNTABA) has also demanded that “illegal infiltration of people of questionable origins facilitated by Assam into Naga areas are stopped once for all in the larger interest of the generations to come.” A press note from the UNTABA refuted what it termed were “allegation” made by the Assam Chief Minister, when he said that the “presence of the NAP personnels had stood in the way for those displaced Assamese people in returning to their homes.” The UNTABA further lamented that “illegal armed Assam Police are being posted in the Naga areas beside the so called ‘neutral force’ who are working under the single command of Assam Police authority and continuously harassing the Naga people living in border areas…” The UNTABA demanded that the Ministry of Home Affairs “bring all the neutral forces of SSB or any others under the direct command of MHA…” It further asserted that “till the final inter-state boundary is demarcated in accordance to the Article 3 & 4 of the Constitution of India…any arrangement that may be initiated between the 2 States including ‘LOC’ must cover all the traditional and ancestral Naga lands under Assam.”
Kohima, September 19 (mexN): The All Nagaland Graduate Primary Teachers Association (ANGPTA) has written to the Nagaland state Principal Director, Department of School Education to demand what it termed as the “genuine rights” of primary teachers who are graduates and above for promotion in line with other counterparts of the department. The letter demanded that the department “promote/absorb all the deserving in-service graduate primary teachers to graduate teacher, with graduate pay scale basing on ANGPTA members detailed list.” It further urged doing away with the present system of the Department where it alleged that “primary teachers with higher qualifications are discriminated in the field of promotion.” The ANGPTA stated that “other counterparts of our department like, office assistants, graduate teachers, physical teachers,
hindi teachers etc have promotional scope,” while there is “non promotion of primary teachers even with higher qualification.” It further said that the responsibility and work load entrusted to the primary teachers is “qualification based and not designation based.” Whereas, it added that the “responsibility entrusted to us is equal to that of graduate teacher/gazetted officers (serving in GMS/GHS, during election, census and other government official duties) in spite of any promotional scope.” The ANGPTA further informed that the “work load of primary teacher is more or same as graduate teachers due to shortage or no graduate teachers in GMS and GHS due to fresh upgraded schools.” In view of the aforementioned points, the ANGPTA has called upon the concerned authority to address the issue with a positive attitude.
NeW DeLhi, September 19 (mexN): Nagaland state Governor, PB Acharya has apprised Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Ashok Gajapathi Raju Pusapati on the need to improve air-connectivity in the state. The Governor, who met the Union Minister on September 18, lamented that air connectivity has become a concern since Air India (AI) reduced its operation from seven days to five days in a week. The Governor urged the Union Minister to immediately restore the AI Services everyday as was done in the past and to also provide helicopter services from Dimapur to Kohima to help such segments of population who can afford helicopter service. The Governor also requested the Union Minister to provide air-connectivity between Imphal and Kohima to help tourists witness the Hornbill festival at Kohima, which is held immediately after the Sanghai festival of Manipur. A press note from the PRO, Naga-
land House, New Delhi informed that the Union Minister assured the Governor that he would do his best, “especially keeping in mind the upcoming Hornbill Festival in the state, scheduled in the first week of December.” In another meeting with Union Minister for Road and Surface Transport, Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister discussed with the Governor about his “mega plan for the development” of the North East region, particularly Nagaland and also shared his idea of introducing aqua-planes which can safely land in lakes in Nagaland. In this connection, the press note informed that the Union Minister is scheduled to hold a meeting with the Chief Secretary and Development Commissioner of Nagaland state. The Minister further seeks to discuss plans for other sectors like health, education, industries etc and how to exploit the natural resources to the advantage of the Naga people.

india initiates work to link Ne with bangladesh port AgArtAlA, September 19 (IANS): India has taken the first steps to construct a Rs.70 crore ($11.5 million) bridge over the Feni river in Tripura to access Bangladeshi ports for transporting goods and heavy machinery from other parts of the country to the landlocked and mountainous northeast and to boost trade and tourism, officials said. "The Tripura government has asked a New Delhi-based private company to prepare the detailed project report (DPR). We expect that the DPR would be ready by December this year and the actual work to construct the bridge would start after that," Tripura Public Works Department engineer-in-chief Sunil Bhowmik told IANS. Once the 150-metre reinforced cement concrete (RCC) bridge is constructed, India's mountainous northeastern states would be able to access Chittagong international port and other ports in Bangladesh to ferry heavy equipment, foodgrain and
other essentials from various parts of the country and abroad. The Bangladesh government has already agreed to allow India to use Chittagong port, about 75 km from Tripura's southern border town of Sabroom. India is already using Ashuganj port on the river Meghna in eastern Bangladesh, which is around 40 km from Tripura, for transhipments. The Indian government has spent several millions of rupees to develop the port and its related infrastructure. "The Tripura government would be spending Rs 60 lakh on preparing the DPR. Tripura's industry and commerce department is the nodal department to build the bridge," Bhowmik said. "The site, alignment and other technical details were finalised after a series of joint visits by officials of the Indian and Bangladeshi governments," he added. Officials of the industry and commerce department said the Indian government would pro-
vide funds from the Assistance to States for Developing Export Infrastructure and Allied Activities (ASIDE) scheme to construct the bridge at par with international standards. The Indian and Bangladesh governments agreed to construct the bridge after Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar urged both New Delhi and Dhaka to do so to resolve the decades-old problem of transporting goods from different parts of India and abroad to the northeastern states. This transportation via Bangladesh is much easier as surface connectivity is a key factor for the northeastern region, which is surrounded by Bangladesh, Myanmar, Bhutan and China. There is only a narrow land corridor to the northeastern states from India through Assam and West Bengal but this route passes through hilly terrain with steep gradients and multiple hairpin bends. For instance, Agartala via Guwahati is 1,650 km from Kolkata
and 2,637 km from New Delhi, while the distance between Agartala and Kolkata via Bangladesh is just about 350 km. "The proposed bridge over the river Feni would not only be easier to ferry goods and heavy machinery to the region, it would also greatly boost the trade between Bangladesh and northeastern states," Tripura industry and commerce department special secretary Pravin L. Agrawal told IANS. "Bangladesh has long ago announced it would provide India access to all its ports. Bangladesh would also benefit if its ports are used by India," he added. Agrawal said that tourism of the two countries would also be boosted once easier connectivity was established between them. Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram have undertaken to develop various tourism-related amenities and infrastructure along their bordering areas. NeW DelHI, September 19 (NNN): As part of an initiative by the Delhi police to sensitise its police forces about North East India, its people and their cultures, all Delhi police officer trainees will be touring the North East soon with the help of the States police in the North East. “The tour is intended to give them proper exposure about the rich and diverse heritage of the region, which in turn will help the police officers to better understand and build a positive bond while dealing with the problems and issues faced by NE people in Delhi,” informed IGP Robin Hibu, Nodal Officer for North East people in Delhi police. The latest move of the Delhi police is part of its safety and protective measures for the North East people residing in the national capital following reports of discriminations
on the people from the NE region. Earlier, a nodal officer for railway stations and metro for the North East people in New Delhi has been appointed in order to address the rising cases of crime. Sometimes many crimes are committed at different railway stations and metro stations in Delhi. Though police stations are available to look into such cases, the direct intervention of senior police officers is sometimes required to look into such cases. “With the rising crime against North East people in metro cities especially in Delhi, the ACP Railways of Delhi Police has been nominated as the Nodal Officer for Railways and Metro for crime against North East people,” informed IGP Robin Hibu, Nodal Officer for North East People in Delhi police. Again, as part of the safety measures, a self-defence Karate training
for North East women in Delhi will start from October 4 at DDA Squash & Badminton Auditorium, Sirifort, New Delhi. The year-long programme is an initiative of the Delhi Police to train NE women in self-defence against eve-teasing, molestation, sexual assault, rape, etc. The training will be held every Saturday and Sunday from 4 pm to 6pm. NE women in Delhi who are interested in taking part in the programme are requested to provide their names and mobile numbers to any of the Delhi Police NE representatives or to the mobile number 9810083486 by September 25 positively. Apart from the self-defence training for women, the Delhi Police will also be organising a Hindi class for NE youth in the same venue after every self-defence training session from 6 pm-7 pm.
On an average, the distance between important cities of Bangladesh and northeastern India is 5 km to 50 km. Meanwhile, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has started preliminary work to extend its network up to the Bangladeshi border town and railway station of Akhaurah, just six km from the Agartala railway station. In a first, a 5,000 tonne consignment of rice, of a total of 10,000 tonnes, carried in small ships from Kakinada port in Andhra Pradesh reached Ashuganj port in eastern Bangladesh via Kolkata Aug 5. From Ashuganj, Bangladeshi trucks carried the rice to Food Corporation of India warehouses in Nandannagar near Agartala. In 2012, Bangladesh had allowed India's state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) to ferry heavy machinery, turbines and cargo through Ashuganj for the 726 MW Palatana mega power project in southern Tripura.
Arunachal seeks central fund to restore connectivity
ItANAgAr, September 19 (ptI): Arunachal Pradesh has urged the Centre to immediately release fund for restoring the road connectivity severely damaged by recent floods in the state. Arunachal PWD Minister Gojen Gadi made the requests in New Delhi yesterday to Union Minister for State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju who has been appointed in-charge of north eastern region by Union Road, Transport & Highway Minister Nitin Gadkari for his ministry, Gadi said in a statement here today. Pointing out the trail of devastation and damages caused by the flood to various important roads, particularly Itanagar-Banderdewa, Mahadevpur-Boding-Jairampur, Longding-Tisa-Khonsa, Khonsa-Changlang, Pasighat-Pangin, Pasighat-Mariyang-Yingkiong, Gadi had informed Rijiju that the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) amounting to Rs 28.81 crore were already submitted to the ministry. Rijiju had assured to meet Gadkari immediately on his return from Mumbai along with Gadi for finalisation of the proposals. Gadi would also seek the support of union ministers for all road projects of the state, including the ambitious Itanagar-Hollongi four-lane project, and also plead for increasing the relief under national calamity fund considering the excessive damages caused to roads, buildings, standing crops among others.
MHA asks Assam, Meghalaya, Former TKS vice-president murdered Septem- tem was conducted on his villages of Phungyar area Sikkim to be prepared for rains ImpHAl, ber 19 (NNN): A former body at Jawaharlal Nehru and was also treasurer of NeW DelHI, September 19 (ptI): The Union Home Ministry today asked West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya and Sikkim to take all possible steps for safety of people in the wake of forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall in some places in these states in the next two days. The Home Ministry has advised the state governments to keep a close watch, monitor the situation in their areas regularly and take appropriate precautionary measures, an official spokesperson said.
The advisory came on the basis of today's reports from Indian Meteorological Department which said there is weather forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rain falls at isolated places in Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim and sub-Himalayan West Bengal during the next two days. The weather forecast came days after Jammu and Kashmir faced heavy rainfall leading to the flooding of the state which has so far claimed 277 lives.
Did Rijiju skip bilateral talks due to Chinese sensitivities over Arunachal?
NeW DelHI, September 19 (et bureAu): The conspicuous absence of Kiren Rijiju, the minister of state for home and the member of Parliament from Arunachal Pradesh, from the delegation-level talks and state banquet hosted by the President for his Chinese counterpart was the only jarring note in the strong message given to China by India on Thursday. With home minister Rajnath Singh flying out to Nepal early on Thursday for the Saarc home ministers meet, Rijiju, the only MoS in the home ministry, was expected to represent MHA at the delegation-level talks and banquet. At least two govern-
ment officials told ET, on condition of anonymity, that the reason for not inviting Rijiju may be related to not ruffling Chinese feathers over its sensitivities as he represents Arunachal Pradesh, a disputed territory according to China. Rijiju has been a vocal critic of China's repeated transgressions into India as well as their stapled visa policy for residents of Arunachal Pradesh. Congress spokesman Anand Sharma expressed surprise over Rijiju's exclusion. "MoS are not excluded from the state banquet and over the years the practice has been to include the MoS of key ministries, especially if the Cabinet
minister is not present. So the exclusion of the minister from the northeast, that too someone holding a key responsibility like home, sends the wrong signals and confuses interlocutors," Sharma told ET on Thursday. No official reaction was forthcoming from the spokespersons of home ministry, Rashtrapati Bhawan or the ministry of external affairs despite repeated attempts. Rijiju was also not available for comment. A home ministry official, on the condition of anonymity, said the list of invitees for the banquet was prepared by the President's House in consultation with the foreign ministry.

Tradition & modernity blending via education in Nagaland
I
t is not even a hundred years ago, that Morung was considered as the knowledge storehouse. The idea of Morung was such that young men and women, once they attain the age, were admitted to this sacred institution and trained in various skills. The skills acquired were vital for their livelihood and also for the society. Men and women were taught in handlooms and handicrafts and other important responsibilities. It was a training ground for a young men to be a brave warrior, chivalrous, and at the same time equip them with the necessary know-how of producing utilities carved and crafted out of wood, bamboo and caneour natural vegetation. Baskets, furniture, utensils, and other useful products were produced with the resources available. Similarly, young women were taught to knit, weave, and sew. Other than spending time in the paddy field, the output of these handloom and handicraft was what generated self-sufficiency. We need to inculcate some of the education system of Morung in our school curriculum. This is not to back-track ourselves to the ancestral era. It is merely to tap and hone our inher-
ent abilities. Even in the present, our capacity to construct and create out of things we find around us is nothing less than ingenuity. The advent of Western education has completely changed the course of our traditional education system. True, that it has helped us know the unknowns, however, like the baby in the tub we have discarded a whole lot of positive and innovative structure of knowledge- we have thrown away the baby along with the water in the tub. This should not translate as anti-western education system, but should be read as improvising the basis of education curriculum in which the present system can beautifully blend with some authentic traditional mode for training every citizen. Modern development comes up with technological and mechanical wonders, but our method of processing raw materials into finished goods manually will never become obsolete. The only existence that is vanishing into oblivion is our craftsmanship, because it is fast becoming a forgotten trade- if we do not act immediately and resurrect our dying traditional training mode. Bringing in our ancestral practic-
es to our present learning system will greatly benefit us, as individuals and as a society, in many aspects. We will be teaching a child to be self-reliant and at the same time retain some important faculties of our tradition. The model should include handicraft, knitting, sewing, presentation of traditional folktales, songs, lores, etc. 12 to 14 years of schooling is not a short time. It is in these formative years of human life that learning is easier and quicker, and the ability to retain ‘knowledge’ is much higher. It should be during these years that the art of traditional means of production should be strictly taught. By the time the child comes out of the school he/she is endowed with some artistic proficiency other than mastering the 3 R’s. It has now become strictly mandatory that a child should learn only alphabets, numbers, Shakespeare, grammar etc. As much as they are essential, to bring in the motto of “Dignity of Labour” to the future use of the students, a more activity-oriented subject is required simultaneously. Remember those days when we scrambled around to find some finished goods to
submit for our S.U.P.W.? A class or two per week will suffice for a student to submit something valuable for SUPW. Traditional story writing, folk song presentation, narration or enacting dramas based on our ancestor’s life can help in keeping our heritage alive, especially with the younger generation. This is extremely important for a place like Nagaland where we orally narrate our history because it isn’t documented, and as time moves on the authenticity loses its shin. In between Kohima and Dimapur, and many other smaller places even our mother tongue is hijacked by the inglorious ‘Nagamese’. We can conduct hundreds of seminars and thousands of cultural events. The sad reality is, they remain events and momentary- after the feast or refreshment people leave in the glory of Nagamese, full-throttle. What better avenue than the schools to teach our younger generations about our ‘identity’! I had my pride swollen when my 7 years old niece studying in Northfield came from school and started singing in Ao. She also told me, she can write in Ao!! Not many of my friends, and batchmates can do that. The next time
I go home for holidays, I want to hear her explaining the significance of ‘Tsungko Su’ (Traditional Ao Men’s Shawl) and other cultural items. Trust me, she speaks better English and Hindi than many grown-ups. A small example cited here, but the impact is tremendous. If only she can also learn the trade of sewing and knitting in the school, it would be an added bonus to my mother who is already old and sights unstable. My niece can also help friends and neighbors in need with what she has learned. A curriculum based on textbooks and heavily dependent on rote can make a student crack UPSC and NPSC, but we might end up importing all our cultural products from outside, which will be a shame because, traditionally, we own it. We do not want to get more educated to lose some qualitative system of education that can work to preserve our distinctiveness and uniqueness. I can think about self-reliance, boom in small-scale industries, economic liberation, and preservation of tradition, among the many other advantages. NPSC 119 N
o doubt, I too appreciate the positive changes brought by the commission, but my mind never allows me to accept the scrapping of 119 questions from the GS-1 in the Civil Service Main Exam’14. It is more painful than cutting 119 pounds of flesh from my body. If Copy Paste from the particular book was the reason, than why not scrapped in 2013 & 2012 as the questions pattern were almost same. Why not some questions of GS-II were scrapped as many questions were directly copy-paste from the Glossary of economic section from the same book? Why not suggested from the next exam as NPSC 119 were neither leaked nor error, except some few. Is it, there was a hidden reason behind the NPSC 119? I asked myself. Every aspirant candidate has different strength and weakness. Some are very good in English paper but weak in GS while some are very good in GS but weak in English paper. The issue of NPSC 119 started because of this reason. Who are good in English paper tried to equalize its weak paper with other strong paper. If questions from GS-I were scrapped or re-exam in conducted the demand of some selfish candidates are fulfilled, sacrificing the hard labor of the aggrieved candidates. The Commission should not succumbed to such a cheap demand. I asked myself. As NPSC 119 brings hope to the hopeless candidates and hopeless to the hopeful candidates. The commission may rise and fall, they may come and go, but NPSC 119 will remain forever in my life, unless it is repealed. James Purana Bazaar Dimapur

ick up any newspaper or a magazine: switch on the radio or T.V, what greets your eyes and ears is a plethora of advertisements to bring together buyers and sellers through attractive public notices - nothing but a clever and skillful ways of blowing ones own trumpet - i.e. crying up ones own goods so as to draw the attention of busy public in these days of industrial expansion and diversified production. ‘Advertisement’ serves a useful purpose by informing public of various articles of necessity as well as luxury. Thus old wine, however good will be pushed out of the market unless regularly advertised for to keep up the demand which has been called ‘Hidden Persuation’. The following may be mentioned here as an illustrative story. A drunkard clergyman was given a bottle of cherry on condition that he would acknowledge it in his Church journal. In the next issue of the said Church Journal the following line appeared : ‘This Church gratefully acknowledges the cherry flowers given Mr……………………. on……………………. and the spirit in which they were given’. The purpose of the advertisement is to flash instantly upon the mind of the public and thus to induce him to patronize or make purchase of the thing advertised. In modern times, especially since the dawn of computers age, advertisements have multiplied to a bewildering extent to draw customers or to make the producers to be publicly known. Producers canvas their
goods by using different interesting modes and media such as glamorous insertions in newspapers and magazines, through tawdry cards and calendars, through gifts like key-rings, fountain pens, pen holders, diaries and note-books, colorful posters and playcards, through hoards and boards set up in prominent public places. The Advertising campaigns dominate the ever increasing television channels, newspapers and magazines. Advertisements have become a major industry involving services of personnel including top most artists, actors, actresses, musicians, models and so on. There are noted filmstars and many actresses on the top of the ladder who are found advertising cars, beauty creams, soaps, shampoos, hair-dye, perfume, oils, pan masala and what not? Advertisements appear on the pages of newspapers, magazines and on the T. V. screen. The producers of these products spend huge or enormous sums of money and they earn crores in return. The most successful, popular and renowned actors, actresses and models are paid hefty sums to act for an advertisement of a few seconds. Better the advertisement, better the sales of the product, is the belief of the modern day producer of goods. It is a patent fact that the sale of popular and widely known goods drops off for want of advertisements. Gone are the days when the quality and durability of the product would make it popular in the market. This is the age of advertising, not the quality. No matter how contemptuous we may be of them in the beginning, their mesmeric ap-

beauty cream, Katrina Kaif is using L’Oreal Lipsticks and so on, there must be something good in those products and the prospective purchaser is lured by the entire range of cosmetic products as they pay a lot of attention to personal appearances. To market their products, the company presents their products in such an attractive and convincing way that consulters are almost compelled to buy those. A glaring example of that is a T.V. commercial in which a fairness cream product is advertised which assures viewers of becoming fair in ten days even if they are dusky. This clearly reveals that a company makes such an advertisement which promises people even impossible things, yet the customers blindly believe in the advertisement and fall for it. It is the pressure on the mind of the reader or the viewer that is attempted at and it is this psychological influencing and exploitation which is the basis of advertisement. However, educated people need not behave like robots in this regard. We should understand how advertisements seek to influence us, so that we can resist them when necessary. It is for the consumer to use his discretion and not get carried away by the media hype which assails our senses every minute of the day. Moreover, the motive of advertisements should be public service, not private gains. The danger comes when private gain is made at the cost of the publicS Ghose, Asst. peal captures us in the end. The real worth of an article is of little importance, what matters is the way in which public attention is drawn towards it by using different devices of hypnotizing the masses for larger sale. Newer and newer devices are being adopted everyday by the clever advertisers for the purpose of drawing money even from the pocket of most cautious and miserly customers. The younger generations and the housewives are specially impressed by the new products — since the appeal is irresistible, modern youth are especially attracted towards them. The parents naturally resist the unending demands of their growing children as it turns out to be a big drain on their purse. The older children of weaker sections of society are so much lured by the advertisements blitz that they sometimes fall into bad ways to earn a fast buck. The temptations allure them to work for some anti-social elements, to steal or snatch away wherever the hand can be put. And it becomes very difficult for them to come out of their vicious circle. When the advertisement is coming up again and again with its contents and qualities, influence the viewer’s or the reader’s mind and he/she feels for a moment - ‘why not give it a try to it, so much is being said about it; there must be something special about it’. Big and renowned people are saying ‘good’ about something; it is not for nothing that they would be saying so. If Amitabh Bachchan is liking a particular hairdye, Priyanka Chopra is using a particular

terestingly, of many Naga tribes, even across the borders of the States. Angamis, Chakhesangs, Moas and Poumais have them well scripted and sung in many occasions, though in varied tunes and meanings sometimes. However similarities are crystal clear and so it does raise queries as much as the joy of togetherness. Is it something that binds the people like the word ‘Naga’ who otherwise are separated in the name of territory, tribe etc? Experts too have their views on this wordbeauty. Veswüzo Phesao, Programme Director, NEZCC puts the translated meaning of as ‘Ne Hi Mo Zo Ha Nü Di Yo Le’ (‘There’s none I admire/love besides you’). M Meguo, Prominent folk singer and father-trainer of the group- Cultural Vibrant, , besides agreeing with Veswüzo Phesao, believes that Angami version of ‘So-Hi-Mo-Zho-So-NoDi-Yo-Le’ is an adaptation from the Chakhesang tune which a fitting expression of God’s praise and an utterance in expression of exuberance. ‘There is a history that makes the meaning more real’ recollects Rtrd. Director, Youth Resources Vimeho Khazo. According to him, the phrase means that “no one except ‘solhimia’ has a beloved”. ‘Solhimia refers to the people who were displaced from their villages during war and had to seek refuge and adoption in other villages. The term ‘Solhimia’ also referred to those who were less honoured and those punished for prying secrets and information. ‘So-Hi-Mo-Zho-SoNo-Di-Yo-Le’ speak of something beyond the
ordinary. It is universal in perspective. It is ‘praise in honour of the neighbours’ who love and care in the best way. It is an appreciation of love and care shown by the neighbours through the days of difficulties and calamities. The musical tone is not just confined to the world of a village or a group of people. It is a ‘voice of thanks to the neighbours and friends in gratitude, says Secretary General Ura Academy, Dr. D. Kuolie recalling the translated text as ‘Suomia hamiaha moro u kekhrie jü yalie’. It denotes universal love rather than romance or erotic words of love. Other interpretations sound the same meaning such as ‘who is so naive so to not have a beloved?’ (Supuo mo zo di puo nei jü zotuo mu?), as narrated by Kolezo Chase, Former Principal, Patkai Christian College. Given the Mao background N. Salew, Village Chief of Makhel and Alexander Leo Pou, a student of Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, say that Mao and Poumai tribes use ‘So-Hi-Mo-ZhoSo-No-Di-Yo-Le’ as musical notes rather than words with particular meaning. This study is initiated with intellectual curiosity to understand the actual meaning and usage of the words ‘So-Hi-Mo-Zho-SoNo-Di-Yo-Le’. This has been a step of learning and it is revelatory to go forward to find more connotations in the different backgrounds. However, it is certain that ‘So-Hi-Mo-Zho-So-NoDi-Yo-Le’, is a binding note across the tribes. More information is expected as you read and respond. Dimapur, September 19 (mexN): The Rengma Hoho (RH) and Pochury Hoho (PH) have condemned the “uncivilized and barbaric” act of some cadres of Karbibased “underground” organisation upon some Rengma women who were on their way to attend a church service at Jongpha, Karbi Anglong on September 12. In a joint press statement, RH president, Sawathung Kez Seb and PH president, Penthü, alleged that the women were not only manhandled and abused, but looted of all their belongings. Arguing that, the “barbaric act” was a “divisive act” designed to “break the semblance of peace that was slowly building up between Karbis and Rengmas after the December 2013 incident,” the release further appealed to the government of Assam and the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Authority to immediately take necessary action to arrest those culprits. It also requested the Karbi civil organisation and elders to restrain any divisive force that are trying to sever the peaceful co-existence between the two communities. Meanwhile, the Rengma Students’ Union has also condemned the act of “Karbi Underground” on September 12 “where 8 Rengma women were mentally and physically assaulted for nearly two hours at gun point.” The RSU in a press statement issued by its president, A Shyerhunlo Lorin Naga and general secretary, Sokenye Kent questioned on whose authority the Karbi “underground” threatened the Nagas in Karbi Anglong with “shoot at Sight and flush out”. The union further stated that, if the “innocent” Rengma public in Karbi Anglong continues to be threatened, “the Rengma public will not take for granted and tolerate the barbaric action meted out to Rengmas by the so-called Karbi militants.” The RSU also questioned Assam government “why the accused Ranjan Ingti, who murdered late Nzankheng Rengma was playing an effective role and freely roaming threatening the innocent public.” The Union further urged the civil societies of both Nagaland and Karbi Anglong to “appease and stop the Karbi militants from threatening and harassing innocent Rengma public instead of only lips service peace talk and peace agent.” Questioning the Nagaland government “why it is so much on the investigation of the Pachaspura killings when the Assam Government failed to apprehend any of the accused and booked under the law,” the RSU further asked it to “convince” Assam government to arrest all those accused involved in the killing of “innocent” Nagas.

Changki Village Council appeals to Mokokchung DC
With all due respect to your authority, we beg to say that the above cited orders of the D.C. Mokokchung cannot be accepted or implemented at Changki for the following reasons: Orders, – Tantamount to change of Changki’s founding History and Customary Laws and Practices rooted therein: Please allow us to highlight some relevant facts. Changki Village was established centuries before modern administration came to Nagaland or Ao country, either in the form of British India or Independent Union of India. Every village has its own founding history. Founding and establishment of Changki village is best known to us and the group led by Mr. Imtajenba, who are part of the Emremchangki clan of Changki, were never among the founding clans of Changki. Changki village was founded and established originally at Jangpetkong by four clans including Changkiri (three extant and one extinct). You will not find one square inch of ancestral cultivation land at Jangpetkong as inherited property passed down to Emremchangki clan by the founding forefathers because the clan was then non-existent. Present Changki Village came into being through 3 (three) major migration groups and please allow us to narrate very briefly the entrance of Emremchangki into Changki life. (i). The four Founding clans shifted Changki from Jangpetkong to present Changki location, called Ongdien, situated between Upper Khel (Sungdakba) Cemetery and the Changki Baptist Church Complex, where another clan from present Longsemdang village joined. Thus 5 (five) clans lived together at Ongdien. Emremchangki clan does not have a single ancestral house site at Ongdien. The Upper Khel Cemetery was located just outside the Changki northern security gate, where there is absolutely no instance or narrative of any burial of a deceased Emremchangki member, because the clan never lived in Ongdien. (ii). A second migration led by Mr. Imlisangba of Changkiri clan and a new clan called Medemtsüngba (called Pongen in Ao) established a new settlement just beyond the southern security gate of the first village settlement. By this time Changki was inhabited by 6 (six) distinct clans. The southern village security gate was thus shifted and a second Cemetery was located just outside, at the Lower Khel. The so-called village founders’ house sites that the Emremchangki members have claimed in the Court under oath fall within the expansion of Changki under the second migration led by Mr. Imlisangba Changkiri. In other words, they do not have a single village founders’ house site at Ongdien, since they had not even come into Changki life by that time. It was at this point of time and stage that Emremchangki came into Changki life, in three groups. The first group picked up by Changki villagers were taken into the village by Mr. Imlisangba Changkiri and after three days of Village Assembly session, they were given the new clan title Emremchangki, on specific conditions that the two clans would not inter-marry, but that they would remain as two distinctively different clans in all Changki customary and social life, with separate tax and labour subscriptions, separate inheritance, etc. The second group, picked up at Changki valley – Mangkolemba road junction, at a place called Alolangba, were brought to Changki and were made a part of Em-
remchangki clan. The third group, led by their forefather Laluk migrated from present Longsemdang village because of some misunderstanding with Longsemdang villagers were accepted by the Changki villagers and were made a part of Emremchangki clan. Mr. Imtajenba, Ex-GB, and quite a few prominent members of the clan belong to this third and youngest genealogical tree of Emremchangki. This group’s real blood brothers still live at Longsemdang village, a fact that has been testified to by the village authority; and a drinking water well called “Laluk Tsuba”, where Laluk’s mithun drank water is still in existence today. The third major migration of Changki is of no relevance for the present issue. However, there are now thirteen clans at Changki, including Changkiri and Emremchangki. By Emremchangki, we mean those members of the clan who are law-abiding and full-fledged citizens of Changki, participating freely in all of Changki’s customary life and practices. How then did the present issue come about? (i). In 2001, Emremchangki clan members tried to contribute their citizenship subscription in the name of Changkiri clan which was detected by the Audit, objection raised and Changki village after thorough deliberation and testimony from all the clans, gave a ruling within our customary practices and usages that the two identically different clans shall remain as Changkiri and Emremchangki, in the face of overwhelming evidence given by the village Assembly. Changki Village Council was in full sitting. In Changki customary laws and practices, it is always the Village Council which gives the final ruling and executes the same, Cases, criminal as well as civil, arising within the village and the Council’s jurisdiction are always adjudicated by the Village Council, and not by the village assembly. (ii). In 2005, Emremchangki clan members led by Mr. Imtajenba, who was himself an active member and G.B. of the Village Council went to Court, claiming themselves to be ‘Changkiri’, and in course of Court proceedings changing their clan name several times and lastly calling themselves as ‘Changkiri Enrem’, ‘Changkiri’, and so on. (iii). In Changki’s customary law and practices, no village citizen can take a case outside the Village Council without specific permission of the Council against a ruling given by the village. In this instance, Mr. Imtajenba and others of his clan had done so against the decision/ruling of the village given on 25/10/2001, thereby committing, according to our customary law, the offence of ‘yimden kakba’ or treason. Whatever actions were taken against Mr. Imtajenba and others were in accordance to Changki’s customary laws and practices, without bias and prejudice, as in all other similar cases practiced in the past. Orders, - Tantamount to Nullification of Village Customary Laws and Practices. Changki’s humble understanding is that the orders of D.C. Mokokchung under reference, cannot be implemented by Changki Village Council because that would tantamount to complete nullification of our village customary laws and practices. (i). Every village has its founding history and clan system varying from village to village, to a larger or smaller degree. Every Ao village existing and functioning as an
independent republic or a state as recounted by foreign authors as well as Naga scholars and writers abound. The founding history of Changki village as best known to Changki Village Council has already been adjudicated by the Village on 25.10.2001, within its own jurisdiction, and a court or administrative declaratory order cannot supplant it by some false claims made by a few people from Changki village, who in the present instance happen to be Imtajenba and his other clan members. (ii). The customary laws and practices differ among language groups and from village to village in degrees of variation has also been recounted by various foreign as well as Naga writers. That Changki has its own customary laws and practices requires no underlining. In fact, in some recent writings, for example, in the book co-authored by Mr. N.Talitemjen Jamir and Prof. A.Lanunungsang, called “Naga Society and Culture’ (First Edition 2005), page 39 (bottom) to Page 40 (top) or page 59 (Bottom half), differences in administrative systems, have not only been highlighted, but expulsion from the village of the offender as a penalty is among the long list of convictions listed by them. In the book called “Ao Naga Customary Laws” (1980) authored by Mr. Tajen Ao, Advocate, various penalties prevalent have been highlighted, including seizure of properties (page 159 bottom half to page 160 (half top). We have referred to those writings not by way of commentary or to express any opinion on them, but simply to emphasize that Changki village has its own customary laws, practices and usages, and that the spear and dao seized from Mr. Imtajenba, ex-G.B. was done strictly in accordance to Changki’s own customary laws and practices. Again, in accordance to our village customary laws and practices, those seized articles, not only in the case of Mr. Imtajenba, but in all similar cases, can never be returned by the village council. (iii). When Changki found out that Mr. K. Chophi, ADC(J), Mokokchung was issuing various arbitrary orders, we decided to write a Memorandum, with a copy to the Governor, Chief Minister and so on, including Mr. K.Chophi, ADC(J), Mokokchung (a copy of the said Memorandum is enclosed herewith for your ready reference). It was totally astonishing to note that before delivering his declaratory order in September 2006, Mr. K. Chophi in his capacity as ADC Judicial, Mokokchung published in the ‘Eastern Mirror’ 21 June, 2006, a statement called ‘Social differences at Changki Village’, thereby delivering his pre-judged order in the public forum through the news media before delivering the same in the Court of Law. Changki village founding history and our internal customary laws and practices, in our humble view, require no ratification and it certainly cannot be changed by any outside authority through some declaratory order. Provisions of “The Rules for Administration of Justice and Police in Nagaland” as amended from time to time, appear to support our understanding that customary cases triable by a Customary Court within its own jurisdiction, as in the case of Changki, should not ordinarily be taken up by the non-Customary Courts. (iv). In Nagaland, since tribal customary laws and practices, to our knowledge are yet to be codified for uniform application; nor have tribal customary courts been institutionalized yet through statutory laws and rules for application of those codified customary laws,
internal customary matters relating to founding of a village or its clan names, as in the case of Changki, should be left undisturbed to the jurisdiction of the respective Village Councils which have been formally institutionalized by the State Government through various statutory laws, rules and notifications. Changki’s Simple Understandings: One issue that appears to have profound implication is: “Should actions taken against offenders and penalized under Naga Customary laws be considered as violation of basic human rights?” If an individual committing treason or some other crime is put behind bars according to the law of the land, should he be ordered to be released on the ground that his basic human rights have been violated? Then, what will happen to the rule of law in the land? We do not know about other villages, but at Changki, the only way to maintain discipline, harmony and the rule of law is to enforce our age-old customary laws and practices. Unconditional removal of the various bindings on members of the Emrechangki clan led by Mr. Imtajenba is an unconditional amnesty granted to them to enable them to rejoin Changki village life without fear or apprehension. Changki Village founding history and our traditional clan system remain unchanged and they are most welcome to rejoin their own clan in the village. Our letter addressed to D.C. Mokokchung certainly does not mean that we have abdicated the rule of customary laws and practices at Changki. D.C. Mokokchung’s order may also kindly be appreciated in the light of practical realities: (i). A small group belonging to Emremchangki clan led by Mr. Imtajenba wants to come back to Changki life as members of another clan called Changkiri. (ii). Law abiding Emremchangki clan is living peacefully at Changki. They want to continue as Emremchangki clan, as from the days of their forefathers. (iii). Changkiri is an entirely different clan from Emremchangki, different in all customary practices and usages, except that they do not inter-marry. Just how can the above three groups be merged into a single clan called ‘Changkiri’? Finally, and very importantly, Changki is a village, unlike some other villages, where there is absolute equality among village founders and non-founders. There is no distinction, preferential privilege nor discriminatory treatment on the ground that a citizen belongs to a founder’s clan or a non-founder’s clan. Even people belonging to other ethnic roots or backgrounds who became Changki citizens are never called ‘outsiders’ or ‘strangers’. It is therefore beyond understanding why a small group of Emremchangki clan members from Changki has been trying to dismantle the sanctity of customary laws and practices, given special protection under Article 371 (A) of the Indian Constitution, starting from their own ‘beloved’ village, and in the process, without the slightest hesitation, defile and vitiate social harmony and co-existence among so many people and organizations. From Hamas royalty to Israel's spy Mitchell Plitnick Inter press Service
T
he son of one of the founders of the biggest Palestinian militant group decides to work with Israel. He spends a decade working undercover with the Israeli security service, the Shin Bet, thwarting dozens of Palestinian attacks and contributing significantly to the arrest or elimination of dozens of leading Palestinian militants. This sounds like the makings of a Hollywood big budget spy thriller. In fact, it is the plot of a documentary, The Green Prince, based on the autobiography of Mosab Hassan Yousef. Yousef and his handler in the Shin Bet, Gonen Ben Yitzhak, narrate the film, which somewhat frenetically throws together surveillance footage and live interviews. Although the film tries to focus on the growing bond between Ben Yitzhak, "The Handler", and Yousef, "The Asset," there is an underlying tension in the film that is only partially due to the sense of overwhelming danger that Yousef faced on a daily basis. The most obvious question that is raised by
the film is "how does the son of Hassan Yousef, who helped found Hamas and is one of its most prominent leaders to this day, become a spy for Israel?" The film itself offers only a very succinct answer to this question. As a youth, Mosab was arrested by Israel and was tortured in his interrogation, which was also when he was identified as a potential mole. He was then sent to prison, where he witnessed far worse torture by Hamas activists, including murder, against fellow Palestinians they suspected might be Israeli agents. This, he said, convinced him to take up the Shin Bet's offer to work for them. Indeed, it seems that Mosab's disillusionment with the Palestinian leadership runs much deeper than just antipathy toward Hamas. In the film, Hamas is the focus, but in the wake of Israel's recent devastation of the Gaza Strip, the absence of the difficulties of occupation in the film is even more keenly felt. Yet Mosab very much holds to the Israeli view of recent events. "Palestinians can continue to export their internal problems and blame Israel, but at the end of

t. John Bosco, popularly and affectionately called Don Bosco, was not so much an armchair educational theorist but a practical man with a compassionate heart and a burning zeal to save the youngsters from the perils of life. He was convinced that understanding the youth is an ongoing process. Don Bosco asked the educators to treat the young as their teachers! According to him, to learn the needs, hopes, and insecurities of the young people should be paramount in the minds and hearts of the educators of the young. In this regard, establishing genuine, friendly relationships with the young people is so essential for a proper education. Don Bosco knew that young people need authentic teachers: persons open to the fullness of truth in the various branches of knowledge, persons who listen to and experience in their own hearts that interdisciplinary dialogue which promotes wholeness and harmony; persons, who above all, are convinced of our human capacity to ad-
bridges. But as long as Hamas is digging tunnels and promoting extremism, I don't see how anyone can co-exist with this type of danger." In fact, in the past few years, Mosab has become something of a minor celebrity on right-wing and fundamentalist Christian talk shows. His message varies, but his target is often Islam in general. In 2010, on the Canadian news show, Power
and Politics, Mosab told a shocked host that "The problem is much bigger than Hamas, the problem is in the God of Islam … he is a god of torture, he is the deceit god, this is what he talks (sic) about himself." More recently, on September 6, in the aftermath of the massive destruction by Israel in Gaza, Mosab told Fox News that "I recommend that we stop saying ISIS, this is the Islamic State, this is the Is-
lamic dream, and this is the manifestation of the Koranic verses on the ground." This echoes the views he has espoused several times as a guest on the farright wing Sean Hannity show. When talking with Pat Robertson on his Christian Broadcasting Network in 2010, which caters to the most extreme of Christians in the United States, Mosab continually spoke of his love of Jesus and how Jesus was the only true path to peace. This would displease many Jews who have come to adore him, not only for his story but for stances like the one the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz reported him telling an orthodox Jewish crowd in 2011. "There is no room for another state in that small country [of Israel]," he said. "The Jewish nation has the historic right to that land [in] the West Bank …The Israeli historic right to this land is obvious and clear to any person who can read." All of this raises some real questions about Mosab's motivations, and indeed how sincere the story we saw in the film was. The Green Prince shows a man who made a difficult choice but believed he was doing it
dinner. Americans who have struggled with poverty will relate to Davis' trips to the pawn shop and her tears of gratitude over a found $20 bill. "Forgetting to Be Afraid" is the more dramatic book. Davis' grandparents were itinerant farmers whose 13 children slept head to foot in two beds and subsisted on water-and-flour biscuits. Her father moved the family five times before Davis was in third grade, then left for good, throwing them into poverty. Her mother worked nights and weekends; Davis took odd jobs to help. By 19, she was a pregnant college dropout. She's at her visceral best describing that raw time: "If I had a flat tire, there was never an extra twenty dollars to fix it." Eventually, Davis takes paralegal classes, gets her degree, marries a successful older man, has a second child and goes to Harvard Law School. She commutes between Harvard and Texas, juggling marriage, childrearing and school. She's elected to the Fort Worth City Council and Texas state Senate, where her famous filibuster took place last year. Under filibuster rules, she couldn't eat, drink or sit; she wore a catheter, and for hours told stories from women who'd had abortions. But she didn't reveal her own experiences ending an ectopic pregnancy
and a pregnancy in which the fetus had a fatal brain abnormality. She feared a "dramatically personal confession ... would overshadow the events of the day." As a child, Davis took dictation from a grandparent who'd suffered a stroke, teaching her "how important it is to speak up for those who can't speak for themselves." Whether voters will let her apply that lesson as governor remains to be seen. Davis, the Democrat, is trailing behind Republican Greg Abbott, but she's narrowed the gap. Gillibrand grew up middle-class in Albany, New York. Both parents were lawyers; her grandmother was a leader in the local Democratic machine. Gillibrand went to Dartmouth, then UCLA Law School, before joining a New York corporate law firm, where her long hours earned her $200,000 a year. But a speech by Hillary Clinton made her yearn for a more meaningful career. What does it take for a young lawyer with political ambitions to get noticed? Forget Gillibrand's chirpy, Oprah-esque advice ("Wake up thirty minutes earlier in the morning and go for a walk ... so you can face the day from a stronger, healthier, happier place"). Instead, learn by example: Gillibrand joins boards and political groups. She
seeks out mentors, writes checks, raises money and milks moments on reception lines, asking Hillary Clinton at one event how she can help. Clinton asks her to host a fundraiser; Gillibrand throws "the best event" ever. Gillibrand tries and fails to get hired by federal prosecutors, then tells Andrew Cuomo — then U.S. Housing Secretary — at another event that she can't "break in" to public service. Within days, she's working in Washington. She later beats a four-term Republican congressman in a GOP district and is appointed U.S. senator when Hillary Clinton becomes secretary of state. Gillibrand's accounts of comments by men in Washington have made waves. One told her: "Good thing you're working out, because you wouldn't want to get porky!" Another said: "Don't lose too much weight now. I like my girls chubby!" She told People magazine the men were "well into their 60s, 70s or 80s" and didn't know their comments were "inappropriate." Some reporters said they didn't believe her stories and demanded she name the offenders. But her defenders countered that if she named names, she'd never get support from male senators on issues she's fought for like reform-

"Forgetting to Be Afraid" chronicles Davis' hardscrabble journey from teen mom in a trailer park to Harvard Law School. Gillibrand's "Off the Sidelines" is a "Lean In"-style exhortation about women in a man's world. Both books made headlines. Davis' revealed that she terminated two pregnancies for medical reasons. Gillibrand's describes unnamed male colleagues in Washington making inappropriate remarks about her appearance. But readers may find other aspects of the books equally compelling. Working moms will nod in recognition as Gillibrand describes raising two little boys, running from day care to the Senate to home, juggling sick kids, legislation and making

What we do see in the film, quite clearly, is the growing bond between Mosab and his Shin Bet handler, Gonen BenYitzhak. Ben-Yitzhak, now a lawyer in Israel after losing his job with the Shin Bet, echoes Yousef's view that the Palestinians are to blame for the perpetuation of the conflict, although Ben-Yitzhak has a somewhat less idealized view of Israel. "Look, I'm not pleased with all Israeli policies," Ben-Yitzhak told IPS. "But now, Palestinians need to find a way to develop. But for many years, they are stuck with bombing and terrorism and violence. Many (people around the world) criticize Israel, but can you compare occupation to blowing up people on a bus? What is the comparison, what are the values that make him blow himself up? Don Bosco: The Educator Saint
vance along the path of truth. In his view, education cannot any more ignore the importance and relevance of the development of aesthetic sense among children as aesthetic appreciation leads the mind to newer explorations for finding “books in brooks” and “sermons in stones” for empowerment and enlightenment. Don Bosco’s vision of education calls for an integral understanding of education that educates the human search for meaning. It accompanies the search towards the encounter between the creature and the Creator. His well-known words on the subject are simple, yet profound: “Remember that education is a matter of the heart, of which God is the sole master, and we will be unable to achieve anything unless God teaches us, and puts the key in our hands.” In Don Bosco’s vision, education concerns the totality of the person, each one’s interior unity and ultimate destiny.
In his letter to his followers from Rome on 10th May 1884, Don Bosco wrote that love alone is not enough. He insists that “we must stay with the young, take part in their games.” He asks for something more: “Love what the young love.” He goes on to exhort: “The educator must love what the young love, and the young will come to love what the educators love.” There is no surprise more magical than the surprise of being loved. Don Bosco goes on to say: “If the young know that they are really loved because the educators take part in the things that are pleasing to them, they learn to love the things they naturally don’t like, such as discipline, study, etc., and these things they learn to do with enthusiasm and love.” Don Bosco wanted his educators to be reasonable with the young. Reason stands for a wise and progressive enlightenment of the minds of the young, opening them to the world, to culture, to the
realities of life and the appeal of values. In dealing with the young, reason also signifies reasonableness, good sense, prudence, simplicity and avoidance of anything artificial. The rules of good behaviour to be inculcated must be reasonable and essential; they must be clearly explained, and their necessity and value must be patiently brought home to the young. Reason in this context also means persuasiveness and dialogue, and formation of the conscience to personal responsibility and freedom. There are more things to admire in people than to despise. Don Bosco never gave up on anyone because they were wicked or immoral. He was convinced that even the dirty water can quench the fire, and water can always be purified. The educator must possess the capacity for true love, openness to others, ability for mutual acceptance and of unconditioned and positive appraisal of persons and situations.
a miracle to change their lives. The biggest problem the Palestinians have is that they don't take responsibility for their own lives, waiting [instead] for the outside world to do something." Clearly, Mosab and Gonen built a strong and devoted bond. They both believe that their friendship can be a model for coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians. "I don't see a big difference between Israelis and Palestinians," Gonen told IPS. "When I worked with Shin Bet, I was working with people. I didn't see a Palestinian as anything but a human being. If we all look at each other as human beings, not as Israelis, Palestinians, occupier and occupied, we can solve these problems." Mosab put forth a similar sentiment. Yet it seems that this coming together only happened because Mosab fully came over to the Israeli worldview, and a somewhat extreme one at that. This accounts for some of the discomfort in the film, where one has the feeling that there is a lot that is being omitted. Mosab's and Gonen's relationship seems more like a blueprint for surrender than for co-existence.
Kindness, sincerity of mind, constant respect for justice, and pleasantness in dealing with others are also basic requirements for a true educator. Don Bosco was a pioneer to bring to the fore the perpetual importance of life-long education. In the past, the future used to be something with known paradigms and we were preparing students for only a few known professions. Don Bosco believed that this is no longer true as the future has not only become unknown but also unpredictable. Don Bosco was no slave of his times or traditions. He had a passion to remain relevant to the times. He had seen the undue emphasis on the scholastic aspects of growth at the cost of other more important ‘life-relevant’ co-scholastic facets of personality. He knew that this inadvertent and sometimes ever deliberate neglect of the ‘Man-making function of education’ has already cost the society dearly. He did not

to relate to. If you've ever had a child beg you not to go to work; if you've ever arrived at day care 15 minutes late; if you've ever missed work to stay home with a sick kid, there are passages in Gillibrand's book that will move you to tears.
want to continue to step on this slide of disaster. In a world taken over by materialism and selfishness where sacrifice for others is considered as foolishness, patience as inertness, humility as cowardice, obedience as slavery, honesty as lack of foresight and respect for law as timidity, Don Bosco helped in inculcating in the children values that really mattered in life. Don Bosco was such an ardent lover of youth that we hardly come across him all alone: he is always in the midst of youth or surrounded by a group of children. He himself sums up his guiding principle: “That you are young is enough to make me love you very much.” As the year 2015 commemorates the bicentenary of the birth of this great saint and educator, it is most fitting that we too learn to love the young, appreciate their great potentiality and innate goodness, and help them to realize their dreams and aspirations. Education: Indianisation = Hinduisation!
F
or the past few weeks we have been reading and witnessing intense debates on education in the print and visual media. The core issues that surface in all these debates and writings are centered on “Hinduization” of our education. How come and why is it all of a sudden spurt of heated discussions and contestations on this? Incidentally we have a new government at the Centre which is premised on definitive ideological and cultural slants. The Government at the Centre is backed by a party (BJP) driven by an ultra-rightist fundamentalist ideology. It has a clear political vision and a welldrawn road map to realize it. To realize its vision, BJP employs diverse means and methods. Education is one of its tools that the BJP intends to use and be employed as an effective means and methods to further its political project. Apparently, the last debate in the just concluded Lok Sabah session, BJP’s Yogi Advaithnath of Gorakhpur frequently chanted and claimed that all Indians are Hindus. Before we agree or disagree we should go deep into this subject-matter. Therefore, we need to delve into the root meaning of these two terms which would help us to understand the debate better. The term “Hindu” comes from Arab alHind which the French pronounced “Inde”, and thus expanded to India. The people of (H)industan were named as Hindus or Hindis. When the westerners came to these shores, this term or designation given to a whole people, but has been morphed into a label for a broad spectrum of Vedic faith(s) by excluding the Christian, Muslim and certain other categories. Unfortunately many hardly know or vaguely understand the clear distinctions of these terms. If we look at it objectively, carefully and trace the development of these terms all Indians are culturally and civilisationally Hindu or Bharatis. But these terms have gradually been appropriated by Vedic faith(s) and gradually elongated as Pan-Indian. In order to strengthen its expansionist agenda, RSS, a cultural wing of BJP furthers its Hindutva an exclusivist political ideology that visualizes establishment f Hindu Rashtra. RSS played the pivotal role in the recent Lok Sabha elections. RSS has always been crystal clear that: “It is not an individual, but the party” meaning nobody is bigger than the party. Accordingly, as soon as BJP won the elections Modi paid his respects to RSS and visited a number of times in the formation of the government, even while allocating portfolios to his council of ministers. Major policy decisions and appointments for the top brass bureaucrats for various departments of the government are made in consultation with RSS. RSS has umpteen plans to hinduise the Indian society. After BJP’s victory RSS nowadays unfolds its intent on several fronts that creates controversies and contestations. The issues that RSS’s top brass and its adherents utter creates unease to the very

fabric of the plural fabric and multireligious canvass of our society. RSS cleverly uses different strategies openly after BJP’s landslide victory in recent elections. RSS’s commitment to Hinduise reverberates and the logic put forth is it is a Hindu nation because Hindus are in majority. Those who are born in this soil are all Hindus could rightfully claim their citizenship of this country. Others with distinct religious identities should henceforth be called as “Hindu Christians”, “Hindu Muslims”, and “Hindu Sikhs” and so on. So, RSS is gradually widening its tentacles on other identities (minorities and subalterns) to establish a Hindu Rashrtra (nation). RSS is amalgamating diverse religo-cultural identities within its Hindutva ambit. So the whole process that RSS employs should be viewed under the rubric of cultural nationalism. RSS is all out to rope in other identities and religious persuasions. Amongst all the terms RSS’s usage of “Hindu” becomes the centrifugal word for the RSS. RSS the cultural wing of BJP is vying to subsume other faiths and people outside its bracket. Once this distinction is understood, attitudes will change and the motif of RSS will be exposed. Further, the Sangh Parivar portrays Indians who adhere to secularism as “pseudo secular”. BJP is not keen separating politics and Hinduism apart. In the coming days BJP may throttle religious freedom that all of us enjoy as guaranteed under Article 25 of the constitution. Two dominant streams emerged on the nature of an Indian nation in the late 19th century. One stream preferred India to be a Hindu country, while the other wanted a liberal, secular and socialist. Tilak belonged to the first view while Gokhale preferred the other. In literature, Bankim Chandra took a Hindu view, Tagore the liberal path. Parallel to these the same time RSS kept alive Hindustan. M.S. Golwalkar, the chief architect of the Sangh, wrote that “foreign races in Hindustan” should adopt Hindu culture and language, must entertain no ideas but those glorifying the “Hindu race” and should be wholly subordinated to the Hindu nation, claiming nothing, deserving no privileges, for less any preferential treatment, not even citizen’s rights”. As we are aware of the fact that the framers of the constitution eventually opted for the secular stream as thus named the new territory as “India, that is Bharat” that radically departs from that premises of Pakistan and Hindustan. For more than 60 years of Independent India, the country has been following the ideals of secular, plural and democratic India. The 16th parliamentary election has unfolded a landscape that could take India to the other extreme. Prime Minister Modi as the Prime Minister of India was a full-time RSS man. RSS was in total agreement for Modi’s candidature as the Prime Minister. He has been mentored by RSS and continues to draw inspiration from
its broader vision of a resurgent India. Resurgence of India is not just in economic terms, but more particularly transforming India as Hindu Raj. More importantly, RSS leaders are aware of Modi’s mandate. RSS has reposed total faith on Modi that he would by all means translate RSS’s vision of Hindu Raj. This arrangement aided with aggressive and pragmatic approach of Modi make things easier for RSS-government to further their Hindutva project. Increasingly the word “Hindu” in recent times is being frequently uttered in the media, both as a political and cultural identity. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat firmly believes that those who live in Hindustan irrespective of religious persuasions are Hindus. “Hindu” is a firmly grounded term that resonates the culture of the land of all the people. The term “Hindu” connotes the ethos of “Hinduness” of the “Hindu” land. Therefore, RSS via BJP is systematically deconstructing the India’s notion of “Hindu” as the past baggage that denotes the riposte of western imperialism. RSS is antagonistic towards the western cultural expansionism in India. The cultural rightists believe that the modern post-Independence elite created an Indian knowledge system that suppressed and ignored Hindu traditions. Hence, the Hindu fundamentalists believe that it is their dharma to restore Hindu Sanskrit to the school curriculum. As part of it the BJP went all out to change the Teachers Day to Hindi/ Sanskrit. In tune to this BJP and its cultural outfits are desperate to pull back the 21st century young India into an illusory ‘Vedic’ age which is regressive and backward-looking. Paradoxically, RSS and BJP some years ago vehemently opposed to inviting foreign capital and FDI, now in a hurry luring foreign private capital to India. Similarly RSS viewed especially through the eyes of ‘Indian made’ and ‘foreign made’. BJP-RSS combine categorizes goods and commodities through its ideological and cultural lens and rubric of ‘Swadeshi’ Vs ‘Videshi’. Due to stagnant growth, depletion of foreign exchange reserves and exports, falling GDP and GNP and appalling economic indices the new BJP government realizes that India too is placed in an increasingly globalizing and competitive economic order. Accordingly, it is planning to open SEZ, EPZs and hosts of new economic initiatives and outlets to woo the foreign capital especially from the Western European and North American countries. So, when it comes to money and capital from the West, for RSS and BJP they do not pose any ideological and cultural problems because capital has absolutely no creed and color and thus transcends its narrow cultural nationalism! For hundreds of years we have been part of the globalization cutting across the shores for trade and commerce. It is in this context, what is ‘Indian’ and what is
‘western’ in the current phase of globalization? As Amartya Sen rightly points out: Does the use of penicillin amount to westernization? Is paneer deeply anti-national because cottage cheese was first brought to India by European settlers in East India? Is chili non-Indian because it was brought to India by the Portuguese? Is tea non-Indian because it was bought to India by the British? As against the backdrop, I would like to unravel the whole notion of education. Education is not about content, not just providing the right texts books, syllabi/curriculum or creating ideal Bharatiya/Hindu citizens. Education is all about the processes employed how we acquire knowledge, how we learn to ask questions. In order to acquire these components pedagogy is given the central facet in which the learner occupies the important place who eventually becomes free thinkers, reformers, change agents, interlocutors and iconoclasts. The outcomes of any system of education ought to be premised as stated and enumerated. Modes are varying i.e., localized/globalized/indianized, but certainly not hinduized. Indianization and Hinduization are not the same but entirely two different opposing constructs. At this point of juncture let me reiterate that education should not be construed as Indianization hyphen Hinduization matrix. They are polar opposites. In the name of ‘Hinduization’ the Government of India and its paraphernalia such as RSS, Bajrang Dal, Hindu Munnani and ultra-right outfit are desperate to introduce their curricula and Hindu brand of education in education by giving preference to select portions of history eulogizing select individuals and thinkers, highlighting select historical events with glaring subjectivity by distorting certain facts, imposing particular languages such as Sanskrit and glorifying certain texts and discarding others are to be taken seriously because all these involves ideological and cultural colors mp to one particular world view as against other world views thereby creating fanatical, clouded and frenzied mind-sets and thus preparing pervert minds in the form of cultural annihilators. Indian education should mean to create the questioning spirit and questioning without fear and favor. Compelling and enforcing based on one world view inhibit and constricts the learners widening their horizons of understanding. Educational system should facilitate intellectual freedom which would blossom many as innovative thinkers and translators. Suppression of knowledge in and through single mode and single world view is detrimental for the present and future of India. Education is for life and thus unfolds innumerable horizons of possibilities and understandings. Dr. John Mohan Razu Professor Of Social Ethics CTC, Mokokchung

rofessor Mazumdar, the HOD and also our English teacher during the Kohima Science College days back in 1985-86 usually had this to say; “Stay abreast with change, or you might think everybody else is wrong”. It stayed with me but nevertheless I tend to commit this crime unwittingly, never with an iota of intent. From the old birthday rhyme: “The child that is born on a Sabbath day is bonny and blithe, and good and gay”. What? One may in today’s time ask, “Just because it was a Sunday!” In my college days, “gay” primarily meant cheerful. Gay has four meanings in the old 1980 edition of the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary: 1)light-hearted; cheerful… 2)suggesting happiness… 3)loose, irresponsible… 4)homosexual. Fast-forward to the 2012 edition of the same Oxford A.L Dictionary and we find the order of importance is upside down: 1)of people especially men…homosexual. 2) connected with people who are gay(only before noun) as in, a gay bar… 3)boring… 4) happy and full of fun. Meaning No.4 is also described as “old fashioned” usage. How English has changed even in my own working life.

Most of us can’t understand much of Shakespeare without footnotes or teachers, primarily because English has been “corrupted” since his day. Going back some another 200 years and we will find Chaucer’s language even more incomprehensible. Take his first line from his ‘The Canterbury Tales’: “Whan that Aprill with his shoures soote…”. The modern corrupted version of it says “When April with its sweet showers…”. What Nagas can learn from the Scottish Referendum
Lakpachui Siro: Today’s Scottish referendum whether to remain part of the United Kingdom or to become an Independent State has open a new chapter in political discourse around the world. Scottish struggle for Independent State is not a recent movement. The oldness of its struggle for Independent is captured in a Hollywood movie titled Braveheart, played by Mel Gibson, based on the life and struggle of the Scottish hero name William Wallace. Despite of its long struggle, Scottish continues to remain integral part of the United Kingdom. This led me to thinking two questions. Firstly, despite of the political conflict and differences how the English and the Scottish co-operate each other on a range of different issues, making United Kingdom stronger both at domestic as well as at the international platform? This was aptly described in British PM David Cameroon passionate speech, appealing both to the Scottish people and other citizens of the United Kingdom how they are better as a United Country. The interesting thing is how he used logic, cooperation, acknowledgement of how important they are to each other, facts about how they have economically stronger as one country, how socially and politically they benefitted from each other in their long association. Here are some of the excerpts of PM Cameroon speech urging his countrymen and women why Scotland is important for the UK and why people of all the other three Nations; the Whales, England and North Ireland must talk to Scottish people why they should stay with the UK. Cameron gives fours reasons why the UK is stronger with Scotland. I just want to bring some of the points that he mentioned. He gave a list of the Scottish strengths – that includes historic universities like Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Glasgow and St. Andrews; great industries: from food processing to financial services, from shipbuilding to science. It is very unfortunate to say that Naga under the Indian State control there is not a single medical or engineering institution or college in all the Nagas areas in NE. Not even a single business enterprise that you can identified as the indigenous product of Naga in the Indian market not to mention at the global market. I wonder what PM of India will have to say to the people of India and to the Nagas why Naga should stay with the Indian Union. On the contrary what we see in our case is just the opposite. There is no room for cooperation and accommodation but always silencing the voice of the Nagas, torturing, destruction of economy, constant threat to the cultural and customary practices of the Nagas, ever ready to exploit the natural resources of the Nagas without their consent, dividing Nagas into different administrative jurisdiction consequently engineering to de-Naganize that falls outside the jurisdiction of the present Nagaland State, imposition of various colonial laws such as Assam Maintenance of Public Order Act of 1953, Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958, Nagaland Security Regulation Act of 1962, Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, in 1972, Maintenance of Internal security Act (MISA) under Indira Gandhi’s Emergency in 1975 and the list can go on and on. It is high time that the Indian State face the reality. India should not exist in the idea of insecurity of breaking apart if certain minority Nations like Nagas and Kashmir get separated from India. If one Nation does not have a freedom to divorce from the Union then it is a force Union and it cannot be called as Union either. History has adequately given us a lesson that such Kingdom or a State does not survive long. If Indian State really wanted to protect the Union then the State and the people at large must be allowed to engage in dialogue. Voice of the minority Nations within the Indian State has to be respected. Their voice must be well presented in the “Idea of the India”. If at all the minority Nations has to be part of India then there must be a valid argument and opportunity for them too, it cannot be one sided. If things does not work out then divorce is inevitable. Otherwise, the result will always be undesirable for all. The second question will be for the Nagas, Kashmiris and Indians to think how Scottish was able to effectively engage with English, Wales and Irish in the “mainstream” and at same time how they were able to continue their political struggles. What I see in our case is a total disregard and indifference in Indian State; no doubt it can be because of the constant betrayal and antagonistic stance toward the voice and aspiration of the resisting people such as Nagas and Kashmiris. Even if we see the case of India’s freedom movement we can discern many examples how well integrated and cooperative many Heroes of India’s Independent Movement including father of Indian State Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru and others in the system of British India. Some of my Indian friends often try to belittle us by arguing that the Indian State is doing a great favour through various financial grants to the State like Nagaland and Kashmir. Or question like why you study in Delhi or Indian University, why hold Indian passport etc. I am tired of explaining that Indian State is not doing any favour but playing a colonial politics like the British empire were doing in India by favouring the Zamindaris, in the same way they are investing in purchasing Nagas such as politicians to do work for them in forcefully occupying the territory. If you look around all the “Naga Cousins” (read as South East Asian countries” barring Burma, they all are doing far better than India in many areas especially in economy. If there is one reason why our economy is the way it is today it is all because of Indian State occupation. Moreover just because Chinese President Xi Jinping or Japanese PM Shinzo Abe announces monetary investment worth US$100 billion and US$35 billion respectively to be spend within five years, does not mean than Indians should become Chinese or Japanese. These amounts are something India’s is not capable of investing in any part of India the way India will invest through this FDI; forget about those occupied areas such as Nagaland or Kashmir. And Nagas are not fools, where to find a business partner whether in India’s side of territory or in Yunan Province. For passport issue; India please leave Nagaland and I am sure all Nagas will be so proud and happy to hold “Republic of Nagaland” Passport, we are as inconvenient as Mahatma Gandhi or Nehru would be to Hold British passport during the British rule in India, it is a matter of circumstances. Lastly, let us draw a lesson from what is happening in the UK, see how they flourish together despite of the political conflict. How the culture and economy of Scottish people could flourish even though they are part of the Union to which they have been in conflict for a very long period of time. Such situation creates many Scots to even favour for a strong Union, thus opinion poll project that 52% are for Union. Indian State needs to grow its political maturity and wisdom, high time to get over with colonial hangover. Your former master after poisoning you have walk a long miles away for better! Wake up!

Our NGOs are all becoming blind, Public are facing untold suffering but no one ought to voice out. So here's a voice from helpless boy. People of Longleng were excited when we heard that our road is now NH (2lane) and land owners donated their land without any hesitation and public rendered their full co-operation to the company for the success of the project but what surprised to mere public was THE COMPANY LEFT INCOMPLETE WORK, where we have to face hard time to cross 28kms. Govt has failed to meet the demand. Therefore, it is our humble appeal to concern department and responsible company to look into the matter and do take some necessary action at the earliest.

Modi says al Qaeda will fail in India
New Delhi, September 19 (reuterS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said al Qaeda will struggle to recruit members in the world’s secondmost populous nation and he praised Indian Muslims for their commitment to fight for the country. Al Qaeda announced the formation of its first wing dedicated to waging jihad in South Asia earlier this month. A few days later it claimed responsibility for hijacking a Pakistani naval ship. Modi, a Hindu nationalist who was elected in May and faces criticism for remaining silent about several incidents deemed anti-Muslim, said Indian Muslims were patriotic and would not betray their nation, which has a long history of sectarian strife. “Indian Muslims will live for India, they will die for India, they will not want anything bad for India,” Modi told CNN, which aired excerpts of the prerecorded interview on Friday. “If anyone thinks Indian Muslims will dance to their tune, they are delusional.” Al Qaeda said in a statement that it aimed to end the suffering of Muslims
in places such as Kashmir, where a violent insurgency against New Delhi’s rule raged through the 1990s and resentment still runs high. Modi has long been a hate figure for Islamist groups because of religious riots in 2002 when he was chief minister of Gujarat. More than 1,000 people, mainly Muslims, died in the violence. Muslims make up some 15 percent of the Indian population, and number an estimated 175 million, giving India the third-largest Muslim population in the world. When asked why so few of India’s Muslims have joined al Qaeda, Modi characterized the threat from Islamist militancy as not about country or one race, calling it a fight between “humanity and inhumanity”. Modi’s comments come amid a debate within his ruling Bharatiya Janata Party about how to deal with religious minorities after an inflammatory byelection campaign drew the ire of rights activists and failed to win over voters. Yogi Adityanath, a star campaigner in the recent by-elections in India’s most populous state, Uttar
Cong questions timing of Modi’s statement on Indian Muslims
New Delhi, September 19 (pti): Questioning the timing of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement ahead of his US visit that Indian Muslims will live and die for India, Congress on Friday wondered whether BJP and its other leaders adhere to it. It also sought to know whether his statement is a sincere voice coming from his heart. “What the Prime Minister has said is welcome and there cannot be any objection to it. But did he take his colleagues Yogi Adityanath, Giriraj Singh and Amit Shah on board on the issue as they have often been heard saying something else. “He has made this statement but let us see whether his party adheres to his statement,” party spokesman Salman KhurPrime Minister Narendra Modi gives a speech during his lecture meeting hosted by Nikkei shid told reporters. Brigadier Usman and Abdul Hamid have shown their love for the country through their martyrdom, he wondered as to why the Prime Minister has made the remark ahead of his visit to the US and not from the ramparts of the Red Fort in his Independence Day address. “I am a little surprised that this needed to be said by the Prime Minister. One cannot question it but certainly inquire whether this is a sincere voice coming from his heart. I am a little surprised that the Prime Minister took so long to understand this….. What is the reason that he said this ahead of his visit to the US. Why did he not say that when he was addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort,” Khurshid, a former External Affairs Minister, said. Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh, a
known detractor of Modi, also had a dig at him. “Modi ‘Patriotism of Muslims can’t be questioned and they can give their Life for the Country.’ What a pleasant Turn Around ! Does he mean it?,” he tweeted. The Congress reaction ridiculing Modi’s remarks came after the Prime Minister said in a television interview that Indian Muslims will live and die for India and that they will not dance to the tunes of terror outfit Al Qaeda “My understanding is that they are doing injustice towards the Muslims of our country. If anyone thinks Indian Muslims will dance to their tune, they are delusional. “Indian Muslims will live for India, they will die for India–they will not want anything bad for India,” he told CNN in a rare media interview.

India gets its first CBI probing PC role in Aircel-Maxis deal BJP-Shiv Sena alliance of 25 years on verge of collapse transgender TV news anchor
New Delhi, September 19 (reuterS): An Indian television news station has recruited the country’s first transgender news anchor, five months after a court ruled that transgender people be recognised as a legal third gender, a newspaper reported on Friday. Padmini Prakash, 31, who works at Lotus News in Tamil Nadu, told the Times of India that she had faced a lot of discrimination throughout her life, including being disowned by her family. She worked as a dancer and then acted in Tamil soap operas before joining the news channel. Prakash said it was daunting to take such a high profile role. “I was very worried because I also had to focus on my diction and maintain a steady narrative pace to ensure that there was clarity and viewers could understand me,” said Prakash. Campaigners say there are hundreds of thousands of transgender people in India but because they were not legally recognised, they have been ostracised, faced discrimination, abuse and often forced into prostitution. In April, India’s Supreme court recognised transgender as a legal third gender and, in a landmark judgment lauded by human rights groups, called on the government to ensure their equal treatment. India was not the first country to give legal recognition to the transgender community. Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh have also legally recognised a third gender.
India TV anchor’s number is up after naming China’s Xi ‘Eleven’ New Delhi, September 19 (reuterS): An Indian TV news anchor has been sacked after she referred to Chinese President Xi Jinping as ‘Eleven’ Jinping, apparently confusing Xi’s name with the Roman numerals XI, a senior official at the state television channel said on Friday. Xi left India on Friday after a visit to boost trade and economic ties that have been marred by a longstanding border dispute. The blooper occurred on a show on Doordarshan news on Wednesday. “It is an unpardonable mistake,” the official told Reuters on the condition of anonymity, saying the anchor was employed on a casual basis. “We have debarred her from news reading for a few months.” The official said a shortage of news readers had forced the channel to run some news bulletins with casuals. The incident comes at a time when Doordarshan news is trying to reinvent itself to compete with private broadcasters. Its programmes are often a matter of public ridicule for their poor production quality. The gaffe led to a wave of sarcastic comments on social media. “The silver lining: at least the anchor knows Roman numerals,” kanikagahlaut posted on Twitter.
Nalanda University reopens after 800 years
pAtNA, September 19 (iANS): External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj Friday inaugurated the revived Nalanda University, renowned as a centre for learning till it was burnt down 800 years ago by an invading Turkish army. Swaraj said it was a matter of pride for her to inaugurate the academic session of the university after a gap of over 800 years. “I am really upbeat that I got this opportunity…,” she said at an event held in the Buddhist pilgrim town of Rajgir in Nalanda district, about 100 km from here. The university will be built in Rajgir, 12 km from where the ancient Nalanda University stood till the 12th century. Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi also accompanied her. Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi was also present. However, former Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, who played a major role in setting up the university, was not invited, university officials said. According to the university Vice Chancellor Gopa Sabhrawal, ambassadors of Singapore, Thailand and representatives of other countries involved in setting up the university were present at the function. Classes at the varsity started September 1 with 15 students and half-a-dozen faculty members. The fully-residential university, to be completed by 2020, will have seven schools, all for post-graduate and doctoral students, offering courses in science, philosophy, spirituality and social sciences.
New Delhi, September 19 (iANS): The CBI is probing the role of then finance minister P. Chidambaram in allowing foreign investment by a Mauritiusbased company, according to its charge sheet in the Aircel-Maxis deal. The Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) submission came in its recently-filed charge sheet against then communications minister Dayanidhi Maran, his brother Kalanithi Maran, and Malaysian business tycoon T. Ananda Krishnan and others. Dayanidhi Maran is chargd with using his influence to help Krishnan acquire Aircel by allegedly coercing its owner Sivasankaran to part with his stake. The investigation has revealed that Dayanidhi Maran did not raise objection to the proposal of foreign investment by the Global Communication Services Holding Ltd. in Aircel Ltd. in 2006. It added that Global Communication Services had sought the Foreign
Investment Promotion Board’s approval (FIPB) for $800 million investment, for which the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affarirs (CCEA) was competent to grant approval. “However, the approval was granted by the then finance minister (Chidambaram),” the CBI’s charge sheet said. “Further investigation is being carried out into the circumstances of the said FIPB approval granted by then finance minister. The related issues are being investigated.” It added that Sindhya Securities and Investments Pvt. Ltd., the Indian partner of Mauritius-based Maxis Communication Bhd, acquired approximately 26 percent equity of Aircel Ltd. through Deccan Digital Networks Pvt. Ltd. for a consideration of approximately $7.43 million which gives it just 0.01 percent economic interest in Aircel Ltd. Deccan Digital is a joint venture between Sindhya Securities and Investments and Global Communication
Services Holding, the Mauritius Subsidiary of Maxis Communication Bhd. Malaysia. The CBI added that it appears that Maxis has given a lot of concessions to the promoters of Sindhya Securities and Investments in terms of investments. “Further investigation is being carried out if Sindhya Securities and Investments is holding 26 percent equity in Aircel Ltd. on behalf of the accused,” the CBI said. It was alleged by Sivasankaran that Dayanidhi Maran favoured Maxis Group in the takeover of his company and in return, the company made investments through Astro Network in a company stated to be owned by the Maran family. Four companies - Sun Direct TV Pvt. Ltd., Britain-based Astro All Asia Networks Plc, Maxis Communications Berhad in Malaysia, and South Asia Entertainment Holdings Ltd. in Mauritius - have been also named in the charge sheet filed Aug 29.
350 children fall sick after having midday meal in Bangalore
bANGAlOre, September 19 (tNN): Around 350 children of a government-run Urdu primary school were hospitalized on Friday as they took ill after having midday meal at K G Halli here, two ministers said. The children were rushed to hospital after they complained of headache and stomachache and started vomiting, doctors at the Dr Ambedkar Medical College Hospital said.
“Around 350 students have fallen ill and have been admitted to Ambedkar Hospital. Most of them have returned home after getting the treatment,” Health minister U T Khader told reporters here. “When we came here many children had gone home after getting the treatment. No one should panic and create confusion... we have to clear confusion and fear among parents and children,” he said.
mumbAi, September 19 (iANS): The 25-year-old alliance between the BJP and the Shiv Sena was on the verge of collapse Friday with both parties adopting a tough stance on the issue of seat-sharing for the Oct 15 state assembly elections, party officials said. Both the warring partners are holding a series of crucial meetings during the day to take a final call on continuing the alliance. “It’s on the verge of breaking - Only a formal announcement is awaited,” a senior state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, requesting anonymity, told IANS early Friday. Similarly, a senior Shiv Sena functionary hinted to IANS that the alliance “is over”,but the party has decided to wait for further developments before declaring its stand. However, a ray of hope emerged Friday morning for the feuding partners with union Minister Nitin Gadkari meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi over the issue. Gadkari is expected to arrive in Mumbai
Friday afternoon with a compromise formula intended to save the alliance. The crux of the issue is primarily seatsharing, besides projecting Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray as the next chief ministerial candidate. The BJP is demanding both parties contest 135 seats each with the remaining 18 in the house of 288 being allotted to other smaller alliance partners. The Shiv Sena’s latest offer is 119 seats to the BJP, including the share of the other smaller partners, which the BJP rejected outright. There has also been no commitment from the BJP on who the next chief ministerial candidate will be or from which party. After BJP president Amit Shah gave indications in his public rallies in the state Thursday that the “BJP will form the next government” without mentioning its allies, the party reportedly served a 24-hour ‘ultimatum’, which Shiv Sena dismissed late Thursday night. The Shiv Sena also resolved after an emergency
meeting that any final decision on the issue - to snap ties or to continue the alliance - would be left to Uddhav Thackeray’s discretion. Both parties were fully prepared to start filing nominations of candidates from Saturday without finalising the contentious issue of seat-sharing between them. The sharp tussle between the allies has suddenly changed the political scenario with optimism brewing in the ruling Congress-Nationalist Congress Party camps over their prospects in next month’selections.AstheBJPShiv Sena remained at daggers drawn, smaller partners like the Republican Party of India (A) and Swabhimani Sanghatana squirmed with apprehensions over their fate and future if the matter remained unresolved or the alliance collapsed. The leaders of the smaller partners have been making desperate attempts to persuade both Shiv Sena and the BJP leadership to work out a compromise solution to the crisis. “... We will discuss this with the department concerned, investigate the matter and take action ...,” he said. Transport minister Ramlinga Reddy, who visited the hospital, said 350 children took ill but they were now “alright and will be discharged soon”. India, China favour early settlement of border
New Delhi, September 19 (iANS): India and China have reiterated their commitment to an early settlement of the boundary question and to pursue this as a strategic objective, a joint statement by both sides on Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit said here Friday. During Xi’s official, three-day visit, “the two sides exchanged views on the India-China boundary question and reiterated their commitment to seek a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution, proceeding from the overall interests of bilateral relations”, the statement said. “Recalling the Agreement on the Political Parameters and Guiding Principles for the Settlement of the Boundary Question signed in April 2005, both sides reiterated their commitment to an early settlement of the boundary question and expressed their
conviction that this will advance basic interests of the two countries and shall, therefore, be pursued as a strategic objective,” the joint statement on ‘Building a Closer Developmental Partnership’ said. They reaffirmed the utility and significance of the mechanism of Special Representatives for seeking a political settlement of the boundary question and for handling border related matters. “Peace and tranquility on the India-China border areas was recognized as an important guarantor for the development and continued growth of bilateral relations. Pending a final resolution of the boundary question, the two sides would continue to make joint efforts to maintain peace and tranquility in the border areas,” it said. Noting that improved bilateral military ties are conducive to building mutual trust and confidence, the
two sides agreed to a regular exchange of visits between the defence ministries and military leaders “so as to expand pragmatic cooperation in the relevant fields”. “They also agreed to hold the fourth joint army training at a mutually convenient time, hold navy/ air force joint exercise at a proper time, and strengthen cooperation in such areas as peace-keeping, counter-terrorism, naval escort, maritime security, humanitarian rescue, disaster mitigation, personnel training, and think tank communication.” The statement said: “Both sides agreed to hold the first round of maritime cooperation dialogue this year, to exchange views on maritime affairs and security, including anti-piracy, freedom of navigation and cooperation between maritime agencies of both countries. They also agreed to hold the consultations
on disarmament, non-proliferation and arms control at an early date.” India expressed appreciation to China for providing flood-season hydrological data and the assistance in emergency management. The two sides will further strengthen cooperation through the Expert-Level Mechanism on the provision of flood-season hydrological data and emergency management, and exchange views on other issues of mutual interest, the statement said. “Both sides reiterated their willingness to proactively resolve all outstanding differences based on the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence through friendly negotiation without letting them affect the overall development of bilateral relations.” “The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to consolidate the Strategic and Cooperative Partner-
ship for Peace and Prosperity on the basis of the principle of mutual and equal security and mutual sensitivity for each other’s concerns and aspirations.” Both sides also decided to strengthen political communication, deepen strategic trust as well as intensify political dialogue and consultations at all levels. With this objective, they also agreed upon regular visits at the level of heads of state/government. The leaders of the two countries will continue to meet on the sidelines of multilateral fora as frequently as possible. Xi said he would welcome Modi’s early visit to China. Modi thanked Xi for that, and said he accepted the invitation from the Chinese side with pleasure and looked forward to visiting China at an early date. Xi invited President Pranab Mukherjee to visit China at a mutually convenient
time. President Mukherjee accepted the invitation. The two also recognised that their respective growth processes are mutually reinforcing, and agreed to leverage mutual complementarities and build a closer developmental partnership. The leaders agreed to make this developmental partnership a core component of the Strategic and Cooperative Partnership for Peace and Prosperity. This developmental partnership is conducive not only to the common interests of both sides, but also to stability and prosperity of the region and the world, the statement said. The statement also noted all the economic agreements signed by both, including in railways, and the agreement to forge closer ties in the cultural and people-to-people area. Xi was here on a three-day state visit and left for Beijing Friday afternoon.

Scotland referendum: Cheers and tears
Edinburgh, SEptEmbEr 19 (rEutErS): As Scotland’s regions reported their decisions in a momentous independence referendum to the central counting operation in Edinburgh in the early hours of Friday morning, the “Yes” supporters’ mood grew ever more deflated. The votes piled up in favour of staying with the United Kingdom. And when it became clear that the independence campaign’s dream was not to be realised, there were grim faces and tears on their side and whoops and cheers from the unionists. “I won’t be dancing tonight,” said independence supporter Doug Bathgate, 58, who had worn a kilt for the occasion. But “No” activist Phil Wheeler, an Edinburgh Liberal Democrat, said he was delighted with the outcome. “I’d like to think (nationalist leader) Alex Salmond is hiding in his bunker. Hopefully we can get on now with a timetable for a federal UK with Scotland as the leader,” he said. As politicians spoke of the need for national reconciliation, defeated independence supporters said the struggle would go on. Both sides said they would do their best to make sure that the British political parties in Westminster made good on their promises to give Scotland more autonomy. “I’m annoyed,” said 16-year-old high school student Alexandra McKintosh, tears in her eyes. “Westminster doesn’t care about Scotland as much as it does about England. I don’t trust them.” Mike Crockart, an Edinburgh Liberal Democrat member of the Westminster parliament, said: “We must deliver what the people have asked for – a stronger Scotland within the UK - and we shall start today.” Asked if he thought similar demands for more powers for English regions would muddy the waters, he said. “That should not stand in the way of the Scottish people getting what they asked for.” The “No” vote opposing independence led from the start, with little Clackmannanshire reporting first at about 2 a.m. A big official screen was set up in the counting hall in the Royal Highland Centre on the capital’s outskirts,

Catalonia to take step for secession vote bArCELOnA, SEptEmbEr 19 (Ap): A day after Scotland rejected breaking away from Britain, the regional parliament in Spain’s Catalonia was expected Friday to grant its leader the power to call a secession referendum that the central government in Madrid says would be illegal. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has vowed to prevent the Nov. 9 vote that separatist Catalans want to hold in the wealthy Mediterranean region of 7.5 million people. He didn’t mention the situation in Catalonia in taped remarks Friday with his response to Scotland’s vote, but congratulated “Scottish citizens who yesterday decided in a clear an unequivocal manner to continue being part of the United Kingdom, and consequently, the European Union.” Spain’s constitution doesn’t allow referendums that don’t include all Spaniards and experts say Spain’s Constitutional Court would rule the vote illegal. Unlike the Scotland vote, the referendum in Catalonia wouldn’t result in secession. It would ask Catalans whether they favor secession. If the answer is Yes, Catalan regional leader Artur Mas has said that would give him a political mandate to negotiate a path toward independence. The prospect of an independent Scotland captivated European separatists in addition to the Catalans who want to form their own nation. They include pro-independence Basques in northern Spain; Corsicans who want to break away from France; Italians from several northern regions; and Flemish speakers in Belgium demanding more autonomy, independence or union with the Netherlands. Scotland’s rejection of independence is a disappointment for the European separatists, but “does not mean the end of nationalist aspirations,” said Marc Hooghe, a political science professor at the University of Leuven in Belgium. “There is no decisive outcome at all. You might compare (it) with a soccer game (that) ends in a draw, and we go to extra time,” he said. “But the nationalists have missed their once in a lifetime opportunity ... the Scots could have led the way for other regions.”

but the decisions were beamed live direct from the regions on national television. A moment of hope for the independence camp came when the city of Dundee voted in favour, drawing the sides neck-and-neck, but it was short-lived. Though Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow, voted “Yes”, a relatively low 75 percent turnout dented expectations of a big boost for the independence tally. “I’ve had better nights. But that’s democracy in action. It wasn’t to be,” said Bathgate, a submarine pilot in the oil industry. “We still have our parliament, and we will have to pick what crumbs we can from the parties down south. The demand for independence won’t go away. We’ll have to regroup.” A beaming Sheila Gilmore, Labour MP for Edinburgh East, said she was overwhelmed by the decision to stay in the United Kingdom. “The people listened, they thought about it, and now they have spoken. Now we can get on with practical issues – health, education, social care. We have to find solutions.” Asked if she thought the British political parties would deliver on their promises to give more powers to Scotland, she said. “It is up to us Scots MPs to make sure that happens.”
LOndOn, SEptEmbEr 19 (Ap): Voters in Scotland have rejected independence, but leaders of Britain’s three largest parties have promised Scots more autonomy than they have won so far. Prime Minister David Cameron said Friday he also wants to give England, Wales and Northern Ireland greater independence from central government. Here’s a look at how things might change.
WE NEED ANSWERS Independence supporter Amie Robertson, a 20-yearold student, was in a state of high emotion, tears welling in her eyes. “I’m extremely disappointed. I don’t know what to tell the people in our country who are living in poverty. We’re fed up with illegal wars. What went wrong? I can’t answer that. But people want change, they are demanding change. We will keep mobilising people on the ground.” Robertson, a member of the Radical Independence Campaign, said she was upset because Scotland was divided by class and social inequality. “We need answers,” she said. Calum Martin, a 21-year-old history student at Edinburgh University and wearing a Scottish Socialist Party badge, said the result was disappointing but it set the stage for the independence movement to go forward.
THE REFERENDUM IS OVER. DOESN’T THAT END THE PROCESS? Not so fast. As part of a late campaign to save the union, Prime Minister David Cameron and other major party leaders promised greater financial authority to the Scottish Parliament. In a late effort to boost the No campaign, leaders of the Conservatives, Labour and Liberal Democrats promised to give the Scottish Parliament “extensive new WHAT NOW FOR ALEX SALMOND, powers,” including the power to raise taxes if necessary to SCOTLAND’S FIRST MINISTER? You can’t put the genie back in the bottle once it’s out,” he said. “We’ve run a fabulous campaign – support for independence has never been so high, and it’s not going to go away. Westminster must deliver on its promises. We’ve shown there is a huge appetite for change.” Some independence supporters had wrapped themselves in Scotland’s blue and white Saltire flag or had painted the colours on their face. Ian Duncan, Conservative member of the European Parliament for Scotland, wore a suit and a satisfied smile.
WAShingtOn, SEptEmbEr 19 (iAnS): The Earth is going to have 11 billion people by 2100, with the rising population exacerbating global problems such as climate change, spread of infectious diseases and poverty, says a significant joint study by the United Nations and the University of Washington. There is, however, a silver lining for the Indian subcontinent: Asia, now with a 4.4 billion population, is projected to peak at around five billion people in 2050 and then begin to decline. Using modern statistical tools, researchers found that the current number is about two billion higher than widely cited previous estimates. “The consensus over the past 20 years or so was that world population, which is currently around seven billion, would go up to nine billion and level off or probably decline,” said Adrian Raftery, a professor of statistics and sociology at University of Washington. “We found
there is a 70 percent probability the world population will not stabilise in this century. Population, which had sort of fallen off the world’s agenda, remains a very important issue,” he added. Most of the anticipated growth is in Africa, where population is projected to quadruple from around one billion today to four billion by the end of the 21st century. “The main reason is that birth rates in sub-Saharan Africa have not been going down as fast as had been expected. There is an 80 percent chance that the population in Africa at the end of the century will be between 3.5 billion and 5.1 billion people,” Raftery pointed out. Populations in North America, Europe, and Latin America and the Caribbean are projected to stay below one billion each. The paper explains the most recent UN population data released in July. World population projections are based mostly on two things: future life ex-
“This is a victory for the union, for the United Kingdom. And we are very clear the status quo will not be what it was. We need to work for the people and make sure Scotland gets what it needs within the United Kingdom,” he said. Asked if he had worried in the past few weeks as polls showed the independence campaign gathering steam, Duncan said: “It seemed to be on a knife edge and that sharpened people’s minds. There was a swell of people behind the campaign to keep the union together. Now we need to find ways to bring all Scotland’s people together.”

pectancy and fertility rates. Earlier techniques relied largely on expert opinion for how those trends were expected to change. The newer forecast uses modern statistics known as Bayesian statistics to combine government data and expert forecasts for such things as mortality rates, fertility rates and international migration. Earlier reports represented uncertainty by using scenarios in which women would have 0.5 children more or less than the experts’ forecast. That method, Raftery said, generates too great a range. The new method used statistical models to narrow the range, finding an 80 percent probability that the population in 2100 will be between 9.6 billion and 12.3 billion, researchers maintained. The research, supported by the US National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and Science Foundation Ireland, appeared in the journal Science.

There are some advocates for giving northern England a degree of freedom, and London has been given its own mayor and council. Cameron said Friday: “We now have a chance — a great opportunity — to change the way the British people are governed, and change it for the better.” While giving few specifics, the prime minister said: “Just as Scotland will vote separately in the Scottish Parliament on their issues of tax, spending and welfare, so too England, as well as Wales and Northern Ireland, should be able to vote on these issues.”
Ebola declared ‘threat to peace and security’
United Nation sets up international mission unitEd nAtiOnS, SEptEmbEr 19 (iAnS): In an unprecedented action, an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council has declared the Ebola virus disease “a threat to international peace and security” while Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the formation of an emergency mission to fight the deadly disease. The Council, which usually deals with international conflicts, took on the disease ravaging three countries in West Africa, and approved a resolution Thursday sponsored by 131 countries “determining that the unprecedented extent of the Ebola outbreak in Africa constitute a threat to international peace and security”. Underlining the international concern over the disease with no vaccine available and cures rare, it was the largest number of sponsors ever for a resolution in the Security Council. The Council president, US Ambassador Samantha Power, said this was the
Council’s first emergency meeting on a public health issue. Ban announced at the Council meeting the formation of the new organisation to take on the disease on a battle-footing. “To be known as the United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response, or UNMEER,” he said, it “will have five priorities: stopping the outbreak, treating the infected, ensuring essential services, preserving stability and preventing further outbreaks.” He appealed for international aid for the effort, not only from governments, but also busineses. The UN has estimated that it would need $1 billion over the next six months to deal with the crisis. Ban also called for ending travel and trade restrictions on three affected countries -- Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leon -- as these could affect medical personnel going there and delivery of supplies. The Council resolution took up the issue, expressing concern about major airlines and shipping companies in-
troducing travel restrictions to the affected countries. World Health Organisation head Margaret Chan told the Council that reports Ebola has affected more than 5,500 people and killed over 2,500 killed are “vast underestimates”. “None of us experienced in containing outbreaks has ever seen, in our lifetimes, an emergency on this scale, with this degree of suffering and with this magnitude of cascading consequences,” she said. Earlier, at a press briefing, a reporter asked the secretary-general’s spokesman about a potential threat of terrorists using Ebola. The spokesman said it was a matter of concern. “It can also impact the political stability of a country and lack of political stability can breed other problems. So, this is why, I think, the secretary-general is focused on getting the UN system to work together in the most efficient way possible to stop the virus from spreading and to support national governments.

WAShingtOn, SEptEmbEr 19 (Ap): President Barack Obama will turn his sights overseas next week, urging fellow heads of state to be as ambitious as possible as they negotiate a make-or-break global treaty to be finalized in Paris next year. Obama will attend a United Nations climate summit where he will announce new U.S. commitments, aiming to ramp up the pressure on other major polluters like India and China to demonstrate they’re not laggards in the global campaign against climate change. White House officials said the U.S. will offer tangible contributions such as American technology to help vulnerable populations deal with food security, sea level rise and other negative effects of climate change. “Our hope is that others will do the same, and that can build momentum toward an agreement in Paris,” Dan Utech, Obama’s top adviser on climate and energy issues,
said in an interview. Obama had hoped to focus in his second term on legacy-making projects like curbing climate change. But a dizzying array of global crises has competed for his attention, overshadowing many goals he had hoped to achieve. Over just a few days at the U.N., leaders will be wrangling with deep problems in Ukraine, Iraq, Syria, Iran and Israel, to name a few. By taking time out at the U.N. for climate change, Obama is working to keep the issue at the top of the global agenda even after the crises of the day recede from memory. More than 100 heads of state will join Obama at the summit, which U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is hosting. The last time Obama gathered with so many leaders to discuss climate change was five years ago in Copenhagen, where a U.N. summit intended to yield a strong accord on emissions ended in failure. That outcome dampened hopes that developed and
developing nations could come together to address climate change in any serious way before temperatures spiral out of control. Obama can’t afford another failure in 2015. The talks already underway under the U.N. umbrella mark the last major opportunity for Obama to leave his imprint on the global response to climate change before his term ends and another president takes over — potentially a Republican who would be less inclined to press the issue. “If we don’t get a deal next year, I think we’re in for big trouble,” said Rep. Henry Waxman, a Democrat and a prominent advocate for fighting global warming. Officially, Tuesday’s one-day summit isn’t part of the negotiations for the 2015 agreement, set to take effect in 2020 and apply to all countries. In the coming months, the U.S. and other nations are expected to unveil their emission-reduction targets, and there’s serious concern that countries
won’t offer nearly enough to avert the worst effects of climate change. It’s not known what the U.S. offer will be. There’s also concern that Obama, his poll numbers sagging, lacks the political clout to get the Senate to ratify any such treaty — an obstacle that will become even greater if Republicans seize control of the chamber in November’s elections. White House officials say it’s possible negotiators could draft an agreement that doesn’t require Senate ratification, but Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, has warned that sidestepping Congress “would be just another of many examples of the Obama administration’s tendency to abide by laws that it likes and to disregard laws it doesn’t.” By convening heads of state now in front of cameras at the U.N., rather than leaving it to lower-level negotiators until the very end, Obama and U.N. organizers hope to increase the political pressure on leaders to
set ambitious targets — especially reticent nations like Australia and major polluters like China and India. F1 enters radio silence era in Singapore SinGapore, September 19 (ap): As the Formula One season exits Europe and heads to Asia for this weekend's Singapore Grand Prix, teams and drivers are preparing for a new challenge, with the sport now banning a large amount of radio messages during races. The change comes in response to fan disquiet about the increasingly remote-control nature of the sport. Teams, with reams of available data during races, have been determining race strategy and the appropriate car settings to carry it out, with drivers simply pressing the buttons on the steering wheel to adjust their use of fuel, tires or brakes accordingly. In order to put such things back in the hands of the drivers, a whole range of radio instructions have been banned from this weekend's race at Marina Bay onwards. Teams will no longer be able to instruct drivers on engine or gearbox settings, how much fuel has been used and whether there is a need to preserve what's left. They also can't give information on the wear on tires and brakes. That will leave drivers having to make critical judgment calls on their own. "Until now we did so much based on what they told us to do on the radio. Now it's up to us," said championship leader Nico Rosberg of Mercedes. "It could make it a lot more interesting. It's going from 100 percent communication to about 20 percent, so it's a massive change." Some messages will still be allowed, including lap and sector times and information on the situation of competitors such as track

F1 gets tourism back on track for Singapore
SinGapore, September 19 (reuterS): Singapore will be counting on its marquee Formula One race to help make up for a 30 percent drop in Chinese tourists this year. The three-day event, including the night street race, clocks more than S$100 million ($80 million) in tourism receipts and opens a window on the country for a global television audience. A steady stream of Chinese high-rollers into Singapore's two casinos helped the tourism industry grow at a compound annual rate of 10 percent over the last three years. Tourist arrivals dropped nearly 3 percent in the first half of this year - the first such decline since the casinos opened in 2010. Singapore is on pace to record the biggest drop in Chinese tourist arrivals since it landed a spot on the F1 circuit seven years ago. China's corruption crackdown has hurt gaming in Singapore and Macau, both popular destinations for wealthy Chinese. "This year, Singapore is certainly banking a bit more on the F1 event to come back into the limelight after weak tourism numbers in the first half," UOB economist Francis Tan said. While the haul from the race itself represents a tiny portion of the expected 2014 tourism receipts of as much as S$24.6 billion, it marks an opportunity for Singapore to sell itself as a country that works hard and parties as hard. Festivities this position, gaps and tire use. And the drivers will still be able to access a lot of data via the telemetry on their steering wheels — only now they must interpret it themselves rather than relying on the team. The governing body FIA has sent out detailed memos to the teams on what is allowed, but in a sport where success so often relies on exploiting regulatory loopholes, many are expecting some teams to flirt with the limits of the new rules. "The directive is not yet fully clear and there will inevitably be some controversy, so it will need further clarification as to how much the essential
year include performances from entertainers such as Jennifer Lopez and Robbie Williams. "Every year, the race season in September brings about an influx of international tourists and media exposure for the country," said Cassandra Tan, an analyst with Euromonitor. "One of the impacts is the 'multiplier effect' for Singapore's economy, in tourism cents, retail value and publicity." The hospitality sector is looking to make the most of the event, with several conferences lined up for the weekend that will host Deutsche Bank co-CEO Anshu Jain and UBS AG Chairman Axel Weber among the scores of top names. The Four Seasons Hotel, for example, expects business volumes this weekend to rise 25 percent over a non-race weekend. Singapore Airlines Ltd, which is being challenged by heavy-spending Middle East carriers to attract business travelers, is betting on the event to drum up interest in its premium brand as it sponsors the race for the first time. The drop in Chinese tourists has hit Singapore's casinos, analysts say. Combined VIP volume for Genting Singapore's Resorts World Sentosa and Las Vegas Sands' Marina Bay Sands fell 10 percent in the first half of this year, Macquarie Research estimated. China typically accounts for at least half of the VIP gamblers in Singapore.
on-track procedures will be affected," Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said. Having spotted one potential loophole already, organizers have said the banned information cannot be passed on by the old-style pit-boards which are hung outside the pits as the cars pass, which in times past were the principal form of team-driver communication. Rosberg's teammate and championship rival Lewis Hamilton was relishing the throwback to old-school driving. "I remember way back in karts, we didn't have any data, so nobody could ever
see where I was quick, anything I did, any trick I had," Hamilton said. "So maybe it's a bit of a step back in that direction. "I quite like that we're left to do it ourselves." While the radio rules will provide an interesting novelty in Singapore, they are unlikely to shake up the established 2014 pecking order. Instead it is the tight, twisty nature of the Marina Bay street circuit, the likelihood of safety-car periods and the ever-present risk of rain in the tropics that provide the most likely threat to Mercedes continuing its dominance.
Inter, Sevilla open Europa campaign with wins
pariS, September 19 (ap): Three-time European champion Inter Milan opened its Europa League campaign with a 1-0 win away to Ukrainian side Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, while defending champion Sevilla had an easier 2-0 win against Feyenoord on Thursday. Sevilla took control with first-half goals from midfielders Grzegorz Krychowiak and Stephane Mbia. Inter defender Danilo D'Ambrosio scored moments after Dnipro captain Ruslan Rotan was sent off for a second yellow card. Belgian winger Dries Mertens scored twice as Napoli rallied to beat Sparta Prague 3-1, with Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain equalizing from the penalty spot before setting up Mertens' first. But Napoli sits second in Group I because Swiss side Young Boys routed Slovan Bratislava 5-0. In Group C, the favorites dropped points as Premier League side Tottenham was held to 0-0 at Partizan Belgrade, and Besitkas from Turkey drew 1-1 against Asteras Tripolis. Former teacher Josh Kaufman went on to win the contest earlier this year (14) and now the singer will join the cast of the coming-ofage play revival, about a young prince searching for the meaning of life. Kaufman, who will lead the cast for a twomonth stage stint from 4 November (14), says, “It’s something I’m really excited about. I tend to be the kind of person who doesn’t want to do just one thing. I get bored. So I’m really excited about having a new challenge and having something different to do.”

ed Zeppelin’s new entertainment lawyer has asked a Pennsylvania judge to dismiss a plagiarism lawsuit over the British band’s Stairway To Heaven hit on the grounds of a lack of jurisdiction. The rockers are fighting a copyright infringement claim filed in Pennsylvania against the group in May (14) by Francis Malofiy, a lawyer representing late Spirit guitarist Randy California. Malofiy alleges the opening notes of Stairway To Heaven are too similar to California’s work on his 1968 song Taurus and is demanding credit for at least inspiring Led Zeppelin’s 1971 release. Guitarist Jimmy Page previously dismissed the lawsuit as “ridiculous” and now top attorney Helene Freeman is seeking to have the case thrown
out of court. In a motion to dismiss, Freeman writes, “The individual defendants are British citizens residing in England, own no property in Pennsylvania and have no contacts with Pennsylvania, let alone ties sufficient to render them essentially at home here. “Under established case law, no good faith basis exists to argue the Court has general jurisdiction over them.” Led Zeppelin hired Freeman, who litigated a series of victories for Justin Timberlake’s former boy band ‘N Sync, earlier this month (Sep14), to help them win the case. Randy California, real name Randy Craig Wolfe, was born in Los Angeles.

olling Stones fans are counting down the days till the septuagenarian rockers take to the stage again for their postponed Australia and New Zealand concert dates. Ahead of their arrival on our shores, the legendary band have released a teaser clip which features a montage of fans heading to their recent shows wearing their iconic T-shirts and waving their flags, mixed in with shots of the boys behind the scenes. The band members, including Keith Richards, Ronnie Woods, Charlie Watts and Mick Jagger all provide little voice-overs of what fans can expect of their shows. ‘A lot of these people haven’t seen the Stones before, so they don’t really know what to expect’ Mick says optimistically. ‘It’s a two hour show and the structure of it is pretty damn good,’ Keith says. ‘We know what we’re going to do when when we get out there, but we have no idea what the crowd are going to do.’ Keith is also heard saying excitedly. But for Ronnie Wood, his enthusiasm for the tour is partly to do with where the band’s at, at the moment. ‘Without a doubt the best vibe I’ve ever seen of the band, since the early 70s.’ he says. Speaking on Britain’s TV show ‘Alan Carr: Chatty Man,’ she said: “Me and my mum Goldie can see dead people. It is not really seeing, it is feeling a spirit. “A fifth energy. I believe in energy. I believe our brains can manifest into visual things. “When you see something, you are supposed to tell the energy what year it is and that they don’t belong there.” However, the blonde beauty admits she was shocked when she once saw a “ghost of a woman with no face.” She added: “That was really creepy.” Meanwhile, the ‘Almost Famous’ star, who has three-year-old son Bingham with fiancé Matthew Bellamy and Ryder, 10, from her previous marriage, admits she swears quite a lot, but she’s learning to curb it by throwing money into a pot every time she curses. She explained: “I can be a potty mouth. If I throw out an F-bomb it is £5 in the pot. I have three brothers and they are good with language - and my son now is collecting so much.”

The film, made on a budget of USD 12 million, the film became one of the most profitable movies of 2014 thanks to its amazing run at the box office. It has already surpassed Woodley ‘Divergent’, which earned USD 286.3 million. The film starred Woodley and Ansel Elgort as two young lovers who meet in a cancer support group. It was directed by Josh Boone. The movie has earned a major chunk, USD 175 million, from its overseas run where it is still running in theatres while its domestic earning stands at USD 124.8 million for a total USD 299.9 million through Wednesday, pushing its earning past USD 300 million sometime on Thursday, according to the Hollywood Reporter. and you keep doing it.’ However, lead singer Mick is a little less modest, proudly boasting about the group’s place in music history. ‘The Rolling Stones have made a lot of contributions to the genre you know. ‘It’s part of the history of rock n roll such as it is’ he says. The rock stars’ return to Australia will be most poignant for Mick, who was in Perth to kick-off the band’s 14 ON FIRE tour in March, when he learned of the tragic death of his long-time love, L’Wren Scott. L’Wren, a prominent fashion designer, committed suicide in her Manhattan apartment just hours after Mick left the US for Australia, news the lead singer received shortly after arriving in Perth. The devastated rocker headed straight back to New York, where he was comforted by his daughters Georgia May and Karis, and the Stones postponed their rest of their concerts. The Rolling Stones resumed their tour at the end of May in Oslo, Norway, before continuing through Europe. The Australia and New Zealand leg of their tour begins in Adelaide on the 25th October and then heads to Perth, Melbourne, Hanging Rock, Sydney, Hunter Valley, Brisbane and finishes in Auckland on 26 November.

ustin Bieber has reportedly asked Selena Gomez to move in with him. The 20-year-old singer recently rekindled his on/off relationship with the ‘Come & Get It’ hitmaker and is now keen to take their relationship to the next level by asking her to live in his Los Angeles pad with him. A source told the HollywoodLife.com: “Selena and Justin are a hundred percent together right now, he’s asked her to move in with him and she couldn’t be happier. She’s still being cautious, she’s not going to give up her place, that way if anything goes wrong or if she decides she needs some space, she’ll have her own spot to go to. But, officially she’s going to be living with him. It’s a huge step.” The couple first started dating in 2010 and called time on their romance in 2012, but sparked rumours early last year that they’d reunited, before Selena, 22, confirmed she was single in November 2013. However, the pair appeared to have struck up their turbulent relationship once more in January this year, before splitting in April over Justin’s alleged flirtatious antics with reality TV star Kylie Jenner, 17, at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California. Since then, Justin has been pulling out all of the stops to try and win back the ‘Spring Breakers’ star and even took her horse-back riding in Canada last month. It appears Justin’s gestures worked on the brunette beauty as he confirmed during a deposition last week that they were giving their relationship another go.

Chelsy, 27, was at Peruvian restaurant Coya where David Beckham’s close friend, football agent Dave Gardner, was hosting a dinner in honour of his 38th birthday. Best man at Beckham’s 1999 wedding to Victoria, Gardner is said to be expecting a child with American actress Liv Tyler, although she was in New York on Wednesday. He has a seven-year-old son from his former marriage to loo-roll heiress Davinia Taylor. Chelsy was accompanied by her boyfriend, society jeweller Charles Goode, who has created a customised locket for Lord Of The Rings star Tyler. They were joined by Chelsy’s close friend — and Cressida’s half-brother — Jacobi Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe and Caroline Stanbury, who reportedly was once courted by Prince Andrew. No doubt she and Chelsy had plenty to talk about.

The 14th State ITF Taekwon-Do Championship 2014 got underway today at the Dimapur State Indoor Stadium, Dimapur, with 241 participants. The participants were divided into three categories – Under 13, 13 to 18 and Above 18 and sub categories of black belts and colour belts. The championship will conclude tomorrow. Today’s competition saw a host of Individual Sparring in the colour belt subcategory of the various age groups. The Under-13 duels witnessed most cheers from the spectators. And rightly so. While the spars in the 13 to 18 and Above 18 categories were more calculated in their spars and looked to avoid punches or kicks, the
competitors in the Under 13 category – their tiny frames notwithstanding – jumped, kicked and threw punches from the moment the referee signalled for fights to begin to the very moment the timekeeper blew the whistle. Interesting events including Individual Pattern, Group Pattern, Group Sparring (Junior/Senior) are lined up for tomorrow. A Special Technique which will showcase high kicking is also lined up. Black Belt holders will also compete in Individual Sparring in the morning. A member of the Nagaland Taekwondo Association informed that the winners of the competition will represent the state in the A competitor in the Under 13 category lands a kick on his opponent during the Individual All India ITF Taekwondo Sparring of the 14th State ITF Taekwondo Competition 2014 at the Dimapur State Indoor Championship scheduled Stadium, Dimapur, on Friday, September 19. INCHEON, SEptEmBEr 19 (ptI): Pop sensation Psy was the star attraction as a dazzling opening ceremony, showcasing the glorious past and modernday South Korea in a grand spectacle, launched the 17th Asian Games on Friday. The world's secondbiggest multi-sports spectacle after the Olympic Games, that will see over 13000 competitors from 45 countries and regions vying for glory, was kickstarted with singing, dancing, besides the expected fanfare and fireworks. The Games were declared open by South Korean President Park GeunHye with the words "I declare open the 17th Asian Games," before celebrated actress Lee Young-ae lit up the flame resembling a fountain of cascading water. As Lee lighted the cauldron, dazzling fireworks lit up the evening sky. The competing teams marched into the stadium in the final act of the evening. The Indian athletes trooped in after Iran with hockey skipper Sardar Singh leading out the smartly-dressed contingent. The Indians were attired in black blazers with the women athletes dressed in blue sarees. The smiling athletes walked in waving the tri-colour. India have sent a nearly 700-strong contingent for the event and will take part in 28 disciplines. The overriding theme of the opening was the unity of Asia and consequently the cultural show comprised four parts: Asia a long time ago; Asia connected through sea routes; Asia becoming family and friends; and One Asia, the future we meet today. As is the custom the ceremony was divided into the informal and formal parts.

The event began with a welcoming performance, lasting close to 80 minutes, to greet the spectators at the 60,000-capacity stadium that was filled to the brim. It included a cultural heritage performance of Pungmul Play, a performance of a cheering squad, a congratulatory video of celebrities, and K-Pop boy group EXO's performance to get the spectators revving up for the main event. The session was divided into three parts -- "Incheon, the magnet of dreams," "Incheon, where all of us become friends," and "Tomorrow, dreamed by all of us." A display of Korea's tra-
ditional drums and cymbal-type instruments before emcees Kim Sung-ju and Youn Soo-young came on stage. Then, a cheering team formed by young children performed to a remix of songs from past sports events held in Korea, including the theme song of the 1988 Seoul Olympics, and the 2002 Fifa World Cup. "For You," one of the popular cheerleading songs used in Korea, wrapped up the song and dance part to get the spectators in the mood for the grand show that followed. When the lights dimmed a girl symbolizing the dreams and hope
of humanity enters into the stadium by rolling a hoop which is a traditional play of Korea and here symbolizing the world in unity and human beings living in harmony. Kim Min, the hoop girl, is a rhythmic gymnast, attending Incheon Cheongil Elementary School and is aiming to win the gold in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The second part of the opening ceremony consisted of two themed songs "New Asia, a Song of Hope" and "Incheon". "New Asia, a song of hope" began with poet Ko Un reading "Song for the Asiad", composed by Kim Young-dong, which was
followed by Soprano Sumi Jo brilliantly singing the solo song which was followed by a 10-vocalist choir joining her with a large screen showing Incheon citizens reading the latter part of the poem. The song changed into Arirang, a very popular Korean folksong often sung as an unofficial national anthem. Then "Incheon, a place for one Asia" expressed the Games hosting city as a bridge to unite Asia as one family and open the future of the continent. Two figures related to Incheon appeared on stage: Biryu, a legendary founding father of an ancient kingdom whose territory covered the Incheon area, and Sim Cheong, a girl in an ancient novel, who dived into the sea as a sacrifice for fishermen who promised to give her blind father a huge amount of rice instead. On the final stage of "Incheon, a place for one Asia," a ship returned to Incheon with Korean opera singer, Ahn Sook-sun, singing "One Asia." The ship carried the hoop girl, actor Kim Soo-hyun and people from 45 nations. They were welcomed by actor Jang Dong-gun and people of Incheon. Executive director Im Kwon-taek and artistic director Jang Jin orchestrated all performances. The host country's national anthem sung to signal the commencement of the formal part of the programme. The teams had been restricted to 130 members for the march past and the Indian marching crowd did not contain competitors whose events start Saturday. As was expected the host country's contingent, aiming to finish at least second overall in the medals tally behind juggernaut China, was given the loudest cheer of the entire evening.
to knee injuries
BEIJING, SEptEmBEr 19 (Ap): Li Na, a two-time Grand Slam champion from China who took tennis in Asia to a new level, has retired due to recurring knee injuries. The 32-year-old Li posted a statement on social media sites Friday, ending a week of intensifying speculation that she would announce her retirement ahead of the new WTA tournament at Wuhan, her home town. The WTA, which runs women's tennis, has described Li as a trailblazer and credits her with being the first player from Asia to win a major title — she won the 2011 French Open, beating four Top 10 players in succession to wrap up the title — a few months after becoming the first from the region to reach a Grand Slam final, which she did at the 2011 Australian Open. She clinched the Australian Open title in January, in her third trip to the final at Melbourne Park, to reach a career-high No. 2 ranking, another continental milestone. Li hasn't played since a third-round defeat at Wimbledon, withdrawing from the U.S. Open citing a knee injury. "Most people in the tennis world know that my career has been marked by my troubled right knee," Li said in the open letter she posted online. "After four knee surgeries and hundreds of shots injected into my knee weekly to alleviate swelling and pain, my body is begging me to stop the pounding." After three operations on her right knee, dating back to March 2008, Li said her most recent surgery in July was on her left knee. "After a few weeks of post-surgery recovery, I tried to go through all the necessary steps to get back on the court," she said. "While I've come back from surgery in the past, this time it felt different. "One of my goals was to recover as fast as I could in order to be ready for the first WTA tournament in my hometown. As hard as I tried to get back to being 100 percent, my body kept telling me that, at

32, I will not be able to compete at the top level ever again. The sport is just too competitive, too good, to not be 100 percent." Li started her career in the national system system, but had a keen sense of individuality. She bucked the system at times during her career — giving up tennis for two years to do media studies at a university earlier in her career — and later insisting on selecting her own coach. She also has won support from the public for her courage to defy China's rigid state-run sports system aimed at training world-class athletes. The announcement that she had parted ways with coach Carlos Rodriguez,
ending an almost two-year working relationship with the former long-time mentor for Justin Henin, followed her Wimbledon defeat in July. Li won millions of admirers with her tough-asnails approach on court, and her warmth and charm outside the arena. Her frequent jokes about life with Jiang Shan, her former coach and husband since 2006, in courtside interviews helped Li become an instant hit at the Australian Open. Among her other milestones, Li was the first Chinese player to win a WTA tour title (Guangzhou in 2004), the first to reach a Grand Slam singles quarterfinal (Wimbledon in 2006), first to break into the Top 20.
