AR personnel ambush near Aghunato Morung Express News Dimapur | September 2
At least 4 people were injured in an ambush near Aghunato, Zunheboto on September 2. Police sources from Zunheboto informed that the shooting occurred at around 4:10 pm. As per unconfirmed reports, a convoy of 4 vehicles carrying soldiers of the 5 Assam Rifles were ambushed at a place falling between Ghokishe and Luvishe village, approximately 2 km away from Aghunato town. Security forces were stated to have cordoned off the area where the clash occurred and no civilian allowed in. The ambush is reported to have been carried out by suspected NSCN (K) cadres which resulted in an intermittent exchange of gunfire lasting around half an hour. While the actual number of casualty could not be ascertained, 4 jawans of the 5 AR were admitted to Aghunato CHC, police sources said. No civilian casualty was reported. The number of the wounded however conflicted with the Assam Rifles version of the incident. The AR maintained that only one of its soldiers was injured in the fire fight. According to the Assam Rifles PRO, the soldier was injured in the leg and the injury was not life threatening. Citing communications intercepts, the PRO said that atleast 4-5 NSCN (K) cadres were injured in the retaliatory fire with one believed to have been critically wounded.
Declare black money by Sept 30 or face action: PM New DelhI, September 2 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has warned those with black money to declare it before the given deadline of September 30, adding that stern action might be taken after that. “The first decision my government took was to make a SIT (Special Investigation Team) on black money. So more black money will not be generated,” Modi said in an interview to Network 18. “For black money at home, we have changed the law, and there is a scheme till September 30 for anyone who wants to join to mainstream,” he said.

DImApUr, September 2 (mexN): The Nagaland RMSA Teacher’s Association 2015-16 today informed that they have not received salaries for 5 complete months. A press note from the association reminded that the state is already in receipt of Rs thirteen crores twenty one lakhs and twenty seven thousand, sanctioned by the MHRD GoI in the month of July which was meant to be utilised as the salary component of the RMSA

The Naga civil society organizations meanwhile stated that “our many differences have multiplied over the years, and which has all the potentials of going from bad to worse if the present trend of contradictions continues unchecked.” “Therefore, the only way for the Nagas to be able to determine for ourselves how to live our own way of life and also for the sake of future generations, and where draconian laws such as the AFSPA and others that are alien to our ways of life will become irrelevant, is to secure an acceptable and amicable political settlement with the Government of India,” they added.
Ao senden asks nagaland state Govt to re-amend Municipal Act
mOKOKChUNG, September 2 (mexN): The Ao Senden today stated that unless the Nagaland Government “re-amends” the contents of the Municipal Act, “which is detrimental to the culture and customs of the Ao people, the Ao’s will not allow the conduct of municipal elections. The act, stated a press release from the Ao Senden, “is totally in contradiction to the customs and culture of Aos and Nagas in general.” It reminded that Students of the Government High School, Chessore protesting against the Nagaland the Ao Senden has been State Government’s failure to post Math and Science teachers in the school. The school was shut down by the joint Students’ Union – comprising of Chessore Town Students’ Union and Chessore Village Students’ Union and endorsed by the Yimchungrü Akherü Arihako (YAA). Centre to take up pending projects of Nagaland for completion
New DelhI, September 2 (ptI): The Centre will soon take up all the priority and pending projects in Nagaland for its early completion. This was conveyed by Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jitendra Singh to Nagaland Chief Minister T R Zeliang here at a meeting. Singh informed Zeliang that the DoNER Ministry is trying to take up all the priority projects submitted by the state government and pending projects will be taken up soon. He said there are some
technical issues relating to some projects which are also sought to be cleared soon. The Minister discussed with the Chief Minister the DoNER Ministry’s NonLapseable Central Pool of Resource projects in the state and also his scheduled visit to Malaysia beginning tomorrow. In order to overcome the constraint of funds and expedite the construction of roads, Singh said some of the rural roads are being handed over to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to be taken up under the Pradhan Mantri
Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). The DoNER Ministry will, however, continue to do the follow up for expeditious completion of these road projects, he added. Zeliang informed Singh that he will be leaving for Malaysia tomorrow to attend an international meet, accompanied by Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh N Chandrababu Naidu. Zeliang said he looks forward to engage the delegates from other countries to promote the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Act East’ policy.
“pressurising the State Government to redress the said act and for which as a non-acceptance of the Act the Ao’s under the jurisdiction of Mokokchung district has refrained the conduct of the town and Muncipal elections for the last 10 (ten) years.” “And, with understanding the said Act, the remaining other tribes and districts of Nagaland had debarred the Town and Municipal election for the last 5 (five) years,” it added. It further expressed
concern that “as of now, the State Government is contemplating to implement the said Act by conducting election and for which there are various acceptance voices from different corners and organisations.” “Sensing the bitter contents of the Act,” the Ao Senden informed that it had convened a meeting of stakeholders on September 2 at Ongpangkong Salang, Mokokchung Town and deliberated on the issue in detail and finally resolved to stand by its earlier stand
that unless the State Government “re-amends” the act, it would not allow municipal elections to be held. The Ao Senden further stated that “using the power to legislate and reamend, the Government of Nagaland can easily re-amend the said article which is very contradictory and anti-people.” The meeting further lamented on the “non-sincerity of the elected members for simply legislating the said act against the aspirations of the people.”

Indigenous pig Tenyi Vo is now recognized breed in India Our Correspondent Kohima | September 2
Buoyed by the recognition of Tenyi Vo as a breed of Indian pig recently by the Breed Registration Committee of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the Nagaland Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services is all set to promote and conserve this indigenous pig on a large scale. The application for certification of Tenyi Vo breed of pig was applied by Dr. M. Catherine Rutsa, Assistant Professor, Department of APM, Nagaland University, Medziphema. The breed was certified by the Breed Registration Committee ICAR on June 21, 2016 with the accession number INDIA_PIG_1400_TENYIVO_09004. Nagaland’s Animal Husbandry & Veterinary

Services Director, Dr IP Khala told a press conference here today that with the recognition of Tenyi Vo, the state can now develop and conserve it. He also said the department will undertake research study on Tenyi Vo. He stated that there is scope for developing the
breed, along with the potential to increase the size of the particular breed of pig up to 60 to 70 kg without spoiling its genetic character. Dr. Catherine informed that the Tenyi Vo breed is indigenous to the districts of Kohima, Peren and Phek of Nagaland state and Se-
napati district of Manipur. Tenyi Vo pigs have a strong and long tapering snout, small erect ears and bright alert eyes. It is predominantly black in colour with white markings on the forehead, flanks and legs. The tail is long and usually ends with a white switch. Adult pigs weigh from 35 to
50 kg. The estimated population is about 60,000 to 70,000. Another feature of Tenyi Vo is that it possesses excellent motherly quality and has very good meat quality with a distinctive flavour. It may be recalled that the Breed Registration Committee of ICAR in its meeting on June 21, 2016 at New Delhi approved registration of nine new breeds of livestock and poultry. This includes one breed of cattle, two breeds each of goat and sheep, three breeds of pig, and one breed of chicken. After including these newly registered breeds, total number of indigenous breeds now in the country is 160 – 40 for cattle, 13 for buffalo, 26 for goat, 42 for sheep, 6 for horses & ponies, 9 for camel, 6 for pig, 1 for donkey, and 17 for chicken.

Protecting wildlife in a world of 7 bn people
C
John Scanlon
onsumers and collectors want sturgeon caviar, snakeskin bags, shark meat and fins, wild snowdrop bulbs, precious rosewood furniture, and quality agarwood oil, as well as rare birds, reptiles, cacti and orchids. But they rarely stop to think about their origins. There are now over seven billion people consuming biodiversity every day in the form of medicines, food, clothing, furniture, perfumes and luxury goods. Demand for products drawn from nature is increasing, and with it pressure is growing on some of our wildlife species. Our capacity to harvest from the wild has no limits, and modern transport has no frontiers. There are 1.1 billion international tourist arrivals a year, 100,000 flights every day, and 500 million containers are shipped a year, allowing wildlife products to reach the four corners of the earth, legally or illegally. The tensions between boosting global trade, promoting development and conserving wildlife persist, in what sometimes seems like a set of objectives that are pulling in opposite directions. But we can also see examples where competing demands have been reconciled, such as through well-regulated trade, under the CITES treaty, of wild animals and plants, such as in the wool of the vicuña, made into fine suits; meat of the queen conch, eaten as a delicacy; the skin of the alligator, made into watch straps; or the bark of the African cherry, turned into prostate medicine. Each has benefited both the species and local communities and their development. Illegal trade, worth up to $20bn a year, is now at an industrial scale, driven by transnational organised criminals Wildlife-based tourism has also greatly benefited from these strict trade controls by ensuring that the wildlife that underpins this lucrative and expanding industry is protected. The mountain gorilla is a wonderful example, where enhanced enforcement and well-managed tourism has seen gorilla numbers climbing. In the right circumstances, trade can be an incentive for managing wildlife sustainably. It can provide positive economic benefits for local communities, as we have seen with the vicuña, where the numbers of wild animals have risen from 6,000 in the late 60s to more than 400,000 today. Close to 1,000 people in one Peruvian village alone are employed in the trade of its fine wool. But it can also be a threat to wild populations of animals and plants and their ecosystems if it is not sufficiently regulated or controlled, poorly monitored and managed, or conducted at unsustainable levels. Illegal trade, worth up to $20bn a year, is now happening at an industrial scale, driven by transnational
When Heart Disease Runs in the Family
A
Readers Digest
ccording to the World Heart Federation, if a firstdegree male relative (father/brother) has suffered a heart attack before the age of 55, or if a first-degree female relative has suffered one before the age of 65, you are at greater risk of developing heart disease. If both parents have suffered from heart disease before the age of 55, your risk of developing heart disease can rise by 50 per cent compared to the general population. So, if heart disease runs in your family, your risk is higher. However, it's not a fait accompli. I see numerous patients with poor family histories who still have healthy hearts, and I have patients with good family histories who have severe heart disease. There are certain heart conditions that run in families. These include cardiomyopathies that affect the physical structure of the heart and its ability to pump blood effectively; arrhythmias or heart rhythm problems; and certain structural problems of the aorta, the largest artery in the body. You have little control over these and will need treatment to tackle them. When it comes to coronary artery disease (CAD), you may inherit a gene or a cluster of genes that will make you more likely to have bad cholesterol. In fact, there is a genetic disorder that results in high levels of the kind of small, dense LDL particles. Then there is a rare genetic abnormality known as familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) that results in abnormally high levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Here's what you can do to take charge of your heart health. Trace Your Family History CAD may not throw up symptoms to begin with, so it's crucial that you are aware if there's a family history of high cholesterol, early heart disease or heart attacks. Remember that it's not just the health of your parents that influences your risk-the health of your siblings matters too. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, having a brother or sister with cardio-vascular disease significantly increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease. Why? Because not only do siblings have similar genes, but they also ate similar food and grew up in the same environment, all of which have a telling impact. This will help develop a plan to reduce risk factors before heart disease sets in or catch it early to manage it well before it spirals out of control. Know Your Numbers Get your blood pressure, lipid profile and blood sugar tested regularly, as advised by your physician. Because the age at which people get heart disease is coming down, it's advisable to get tested as early as age 18, or earlier if at risk. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics also recommends that if a family has a pattern of heart attacks or heart disease in men before age 55 or in women before age 65, children in that family should undergo cholesterol testing as early as age 2 and before age 10. Eat a Heart-Healthy Diet This means consuming minimal saturated fat (like whole dairy and butter), no trans fats (found in bakery products), fewer processed meats and more leafy greens, fruits, whole grains and fish. Quit Smoking Smoking dramatically increases your chances of developing cardio-vascular disease. Steer clear of second hand smoke, too. Get Regular Exercise Aim for at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise (walking, running or cycling) on most days of the week-the kind that gets your heart rate up. Exercise can help you manage your weight and cut down the risk. Control Your Blood Sugar If you have diabetes, it's essential to take medication and follow the advice to keep your blood sugar under control.
organised criminals. It robs local people of livelihoods and countries of revenue, as well as of their natural and cultural heritage and the associated tourism potential. It can also become intertwined with legal trade, as we have seen with python skins, posing challenges for authorities and consumers in determining legal origin. It is pushing many species towards extinction. We also know that great conservation gains of the past can come under renewed threats, as is the case with the rhino in South Africa. Rhino poaching there was stable at about 10 a year in the decade to 2007 and rhino numbers were increasing. But then poaching increased sharply to around 1,200 last year, putting these hard-won gains at risk. Over the same period we have seen a surge in the illegal killing of the African elephant and trade in its ivory, which peaked in 2011 with an estimated 30,000 elephants being slaughtered for their ivory, putting certain populations at imminent risk of extinction. How do we approach the legal and sustainable utilisation of wildlife in an increasingly crowded and interconnected world, where transnational organised
criminals target high-value species, and where there are differing perspectives over how wildlife is utilised? Contemporary solutions do exist. The international community has a legally binding agreement responsible for monitoring and responding to unsustainable levels of trade in wild animals and plants and to illegal wildlife trade. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora - CITES - deals specifically with individual species that are, or may become threatened through illegal or unsustainable international trade, including listed timber, marine and aquatic species, by strictly regulating such trade; we now record over 1,000,000 trade transactions annually. Commercial trade may also be prohibited, as is necessary, such as for elephant ivory and rhino horn, and from 2017 illegal trade will also be annually reported. CITES has been greatly assisted by theInternational Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which not only first promoted the need for such a treaty back in 1963, but which has continuously provided sound scientific assessments into its decision making processes. Yet the world has changed a lot since CITES was ad-
opted. In that time we have witnessed growing prosperity, changing consumption and production patterns, vastly enhanced scientific knowledge, phenomenal advances in technology and, above all, exponential growth in global trade. Since 1975 the world’s population has grown from four to well over seven billion people – an additional three billion potential consumers of wildlife and wildlife products. And while we are fortunate to live in an interconnected world, legitimate forms of transport are exploited by transnational criminals to shift their contraband and by travellers purchasing illegal or unsustainably sourced wildlife products. In response, CITES has continually evolved. Emerging technologies for tracing and identifying wildlife in trade are being developed and utilised, and cooperative implementation and enforcement efforts are actively promoted and strengthened, such as though the International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime. New marine species, including hammerhead sharks and manta rays, and timber species such as rosewood, are being brought under CITES trade controls, and well-targeted programmes to support parties implement these listings are in place. September will see the 17th World Wildlife Conference, or CoP17, convene in Johannesburg, South Africa. CITES will consider changes to the trade controls of close to 500 species of wild animals and plants, along with new and improved measures to ensure the sustainability of legal trade and to combat the scourge of illegal trade. Yes, there is a strong sense of common purpose in ensuring the survival of wildlife. But there are some divergent approaches on the table as to the best path to follow, making it one of the most critical meetings in the 43 year history of the convention. CITES’ decisions have a real world impact and the differing views will be a reflection of the high stakes and the interest and passion for wildlife that CITES generates among governments and observers alike. And on the eve of CoP17 the wider conservation community will gather in Hawaii for the IUCN World Conservation Congress, where activists, scientists and leaders from across the globe will debate the planet’s most pressing conservation challenges and how to meet them under the theme “Planet at the crossroads”. The world spotlight will be fixed on these critical sustainability issues in Hawaii and Johannesburg in September, as we map out a path for the ensuring the survival of the world’s wildlife on an increasingly crowded and interconnected planet. John Scanlon is the Secretary-General of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora
Finding Solace and Support
Do you feel isolated in a world where the rules have changed? Here's how to find happiness in a rapidly transforming world.
A
Dr Prabha S. Chandra
njali was at a college reunion, meeting friends after 20 years. She had gone rushing from an important meeting with local community leaders at the organization where she worked. The afternoon had been spent trying to convince the headmaster and teachers of the local government school about the need for sports and games amongst children. It was somewhat exhausting and she had looked forward to meeting her friends. It had been a pleasant evening, but while returning, she recalled with longing their college years. They had been an idealistic bunch wanting to do something meaningful and give back to society. They would discuss their dreams and career goals. Today, she had felt a strange sense of isolation. Most of the chatter centred on achievements, cars and houses. She had wanted to share and discuss something more meaningful, but there had been no opportunity. Many of us may have felt this way at some stage. In a society that appears to applaud material success, accolades and achievements, the focus on relatedness and social connectedness has taken a back seat. Everyone appears to talk about themselves, and gaining attention is a pastime, thanks to social media. While most people around us seem to be engaged in this activity with a lot of enthusiasm, others find it exhausting and isolating, but may refrain from going
against the tide. Yet, studies show that materialism leads to social isolation and those who are socially isolated tend to seek happiness through possessions. These become the symbol of one's identity and are flaunted to make one feel more secure. However, studies also indicate that once the basic comforts of food and shelter are met, undue aspiration for material comforts does not seem to increase happiness, but rather contributes to mental health problems. Constant preoccupation with materialism and accolades builds a sense of competitiveness, which may never make a person completely satisfied or happy. On the other hand, someone who does not want to tow this line, but focus on leading a life bereft of too many frills, may also question this decision once in a while. Imagine a room full of people discussing real estate, while you are struggling to save stray dogs or trying to make a difference as a social worker or teacher. Many people who make these choices tell me that they end up questioning their decisions. Some even wonder if they are wasting their time as they are not able to relate to a vast majority of their relatives or colleagues. How, then, does one overcome this sense of isolation and feel secure about one's decisions in an environment that appears to encourage pursuits that bring instant recognition and fame? Find like-minded people to lower your sense of isolation. I still remember the joy I felt when a friend orga-
nized an afternoon of music in her home with simple food and drinks. There was no pressure to dress up or discuss property prices. It was one of the happiest days. Organize groups and activities that hold meaning for you. It could be poetry reading, a walking trip with friends or an evening out. Activities that allow you to bond naturally and without pressure are ideal. Social connectedness is the key to feeling less isolated. Try and meet up once a month with friends at a unique location that suits your tastes and has a suitable ambience for sharing and laughter. Social rituals are very important for maintaining connectedness. Reach out to friends and family when they are in distress. One of the problems of our society, which focuses only on success and achievement, is that people don't access support systems even when they need them. An illness or loss can make a family isolate itself because of secrecy or stigma, especially in a culture that does not encourage connectedness and is in collective denial of failures. Even if the person does not want help, volunteer to assist in small ways. Sometimes, that's the most valuable thing you can do and, in the process, save a family or a life. Reflect on the meaningfulness of your choices. A meaningful life is the surest path to happiness. Dr Prabha S. Chandra is professor of psychiatry, NIMHANS, Bengaluru. I doodled on my notes during college, but that was as far as my art went,” says Nerurkar. In 2013, she worked on an illustration campaign for a retail giant as part of Madison. It was then that she realised her calling. She quit her job three months ago, and is currently making the transition as a freelance doodle artist. Even her Instagram account is fairly new — she created it to showcase her work in October 2015. By July 2016, she had 3,000 followers. Her Coldplay doodles have gained her a thousand more followers over last week. What’s so appealing about the artwork? Nerurkar incorporates the lyrics to each song along with her interpretations. The artwork reads like a poster to sing along to a Coldplay song. The first few songs she listened to were Shiver and Yellow (both released in 2000). She describes the experience as “shivers running down my spine”. “I could visualise the songs as bursts of colours. That feeling of just floating through art, time and space as Chris Martin [the band’s front man and lead vocalist] sings, has continued over the years,” says Nerurkar. So, last week, as rumours of Coldplay’s apparent visit to Mumbai started doing the rounds, Nerurkar started an Instagram series — the Doodling Coldplay Project. The project sees doodles inspired by Coldplay’s classics, including Fix You, Parachutes, and Clocks. With 11 doodles up on her Instagram handle, @doodle_riot, so far, Nerurkar is working on making 20 artworks in all.

For more proof that men, not skirts, are the reason women are raped, look to Hong Kong Heather Timmons | qz.com
T
he latest advice from India’s tourism minister about women visitors to the country repeats a tired trope – to stay safe, Mahesh Sharma told foreign women, don’t “wear skirts”. Sharma’s advice is similar to other cringe-worthy reasons that Indian officials have offered for years for sexual attacks, blaming women for everything from donning Western clothing to not wearing overcoats. There is no evidence to support these reasons, and plenty to refute them: Women get raped no matter how covered up they are, and some studies even suggest that more revealing clothing might signal a confidence that scares off potential rapists looking for submissive victims. But the ridiculous idea persists, and Indian officials are hardly alone in trotting it out: judges, officials, and prosecutors have blamed rapes from Canada to Egypt to Italy to US college campuses on the victims’ clothing, rather than on the men that attacked them. For stark proof that this is a myth, let’s compare the safety of women in Hong Kong with that of women in New Delhi. I lived in Delhi for over six years before landing in Hong Kong in 2013. The move was a big change for many reasons, including how freely women dress here – from being surrounded by other women swathed (usually beautifully) in fabric that often went from neck to ankle in Del-
hi, I was suddenly in the midst of a sea of teeny shorts, mid-thigh skirts, and sleeveless shirts. Momentarily, I turned into a tutting auntie (“Good Lord, is she really wearing that to the office?!”)…and then, like nearly everyone else in Hong Kong, except for maybe the fashion bloggers, I just shrugged and went on with my day. Women in Hong Kong wear whatever they damn well please – from tap shorts and three-inch heels to office to strappy tank tops and mini-jogging shorts to go sightseeing to cutoff jean shorts paired with Wellington boots when it rains. They travel on public transportation, slog away at corporate jobs, and go out at night in whatever they damn well please – and I’ve never seen a woman being catcalled by a Hong Kong guy. More importantly, women don’t get sexually attacked here at anywhere near the same rate as they do in Delhi, despite what they wear because…men from Hong Kong don’t attack them at the same rate. Hong Kong’s overall number of reported sexual attacks on women is remarkably lower than Delhi’s. In 2015, there were reports of 2,199 rapes and 5,367 sexual assaults in Delhi, while in Hongkong, 107 rapes and 713 sexual assaults were reported. There’s no way to explain away these numbers. Yes, Delhi’s population of 18.6 million is more than twice Hong Kong’s 7.2 million. But that still means the rate at which women in Delhi are being assaulted

is much higher. And yes, rape and sexual assault are probably severely under-reported in Hong Kong, but they’re probably severely under-reported in Delhi too. Hong Kong certainly has plenty of instances of gender discrimination and unfair blame being apportioned to women, but at least no one is suggesting that putting on a skirt means it is their fault if some guy attacks them. Ask young men in Hong Kong why they think women are safer in public here than in Delhi, no matter what they’re wearing, and you
get a lot of puzzled replies. Some say that in Hong Kong sexual criminals are viewed as an even lower form of life than other criminals, and there’s a widespread belief that even in jail they are looked down upon and bullied by the other inmates. Tai Chan, a 19-year-old Hong Konger who is now a university student in Australia, said he could “never” imagine cat-calling a woman on the street. “People will think you’re nuts, alright?” he said. If he was ever caught surreptitiously checking a woman out, he’d be “embarrassed.” After all, he said, “it makes the girls uncomfortable”.

Nyanbemo Lotha Naga: I write this with much anticipation as to how many people out there will actually subscribe to my view point but lately I could notice that many organisations are resorting to “maximum returns with minimum investment ” kind of initiative(s). However, initiatives of such nature is tolerable to a certain level in the realm of a secular domain as one has the liberty to accept or decline unless of course the one selling the ticket or lottery is someone whom you do not have the courage or the qualms to disappoint or unless you owe them a favour of a similar kind. But the liberty wears thin when it is something that relates with a religious organisation and some groups who are smart enough to realise its scope are wasting no time in tapping its immense potentiality to the core. Now if you are struggling to come to the same page with me, I shall gladly paint it in black and white...well this could be a little uncomfortable to discuss publicly but someone somewhere must be having the same thought or the same feeling as me and therefore on behalf of everyone out there having the same thought I shall put myself in the line of fire by spilling the beans. Few months back, a youth group from a church (not mine) sold us a dinner pack ticket worth Rs 1000/- and no doubt it was tasty but it wasn’t worth even half the amount paid. Nonetheless, it was the first time so made a little fuss about it and left it to be forgotten but again after a few months a similar situation arose and all my efforts to decline it politely made no significant impression and I found myself involuntarily debited of another thousand rupees. A miser some may say, but a hard earned money cannot be spent so randomly like that; to be honest my day’s earning do not amount to a 3 digit number and had it been an “in aid of something really genuine” I would have given in but there is nothing as such. Now this is just one example of how some of our religious organisation(s) are resorting to raising funds through religious extortion (excuse the term) in spite of being the ones teaching and preaching against extortions and bribery. It is fair enough to know that funds are required to meet the ever growing expenses of the different activities of a church/ministry but it makes little sense to cover up maximum expenses through quick and easy fixes. Something which you could get in the market for a few rupees should not be sold at hundreds. I do not say that fundraising events and programmes should be limited to secular sector alone, but it should be done within the limit of reasoning and decency so that an organisation do not achieve its purpose at the cost of the financial instability of its benefactor as everyone is not well off to pay such exorbitant rates for simple things. We all wish to see our church rising to greater heights but that should come through hard work and integrity; as the fruits of hard labour are always the tastiest and the most satisfying compared to those easily earned or acquired. My sincere apologies if my honestly felt opinion has hurt the religious and spiritual sentiments of anyone but I felt this is one topic we should all seriously introspect. After all, business in the name of religion is not healthy for a Christ centered church.

Why drinkers are their own worst enemies

ever drink alcohol before a job interview or you might do what my friend did and confuse the words "lecturing" and "lactating" in answer to the question: "How do you earn your living?" In fact, better to not drink at all, I reckon, after finding three news reports about alcohol in my reader contributions inbox. Staff working in a court recently realised that the heavy drinker in the dock spent more time at the premises than they did. "He's probably before this court more than I am," the court's duty lawyer said. The offender, who had clocked up 448 offences, apologised to court staff and admitted he no longer leased an apartment, preferring the cells. They should really start charging him rent. This UK report was sent in by reader J.S. Hawe, who said: "I can't decide whether the guy is very stupid or very smart." The same cannot be said about a drinker in Canada. He was making trouble at a Toronto gas station but police didn't need to grab him. He marched over
to the police patrol car, mistaking it for a taxi, climbed into the back seat and demanded to be taken home. "Very helpful. Saved them a job," said my contributor, who did not want her name printed. The problem with substance abuse is that it makes you a) commit illegal acts, and b) deliver yourself into the hands of people paid to arrest committers of illegal acts. Reader Arnold Chen told me that in New Zealand last month, a woman realised she was drunk and would be committing a crime if she used her car. So she drove to the police station to tell them about her predicament, committing the exact crime that her few functioning brain-cells were trying to prevent. I could fill the rest of this column with examples of dumb-as-rocks people calling police to report that their stashes of illegal drugs had been stolen -- but that would be too easy. Instead, let's go back to where we started and talk about verbal mistakes non-criminals make after a few drinks. Dedicated to welfare of Dalits: Modi
New Delhi, September 2 (iANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decried attempts to politicise atrocities against Dalits and said he was dedicated to the welfare of the deprived in India and that caste-based discrimination was a social problem that needed to be defeated. In a previously recorded interview to CNN News18 aired on Friday, Modi spoke on wide ranging issues, including the economy, politics, and tax evasion. He was more vocal about the Dalit issue and condemned some recent attacks on the Dalit community that have shocked the nation after self-styled cow vigilantes beat up four youths for skinning a dead cow in Gujarat's Una. "As far as some incidents are concerned they need to be condemned. There is no place for (such incidents) in a civilised society," Modi said, but put the onus on the state governments to curb such violence because "law and order is a state subject". He ridiculed attempts to turn this "social problem deeply rooted" in Indian society into a political issue and said he was not to be blamed
'70% Indians want Modi back as PM in 2019'
New Delhi, September 2 (iANS): Seventy per cent of Indians -- mostly young -- wish to re-elect Narendra Modi as Prime Minister in 2019, an online poll said on Friday. However, women's support for the re-election of the government was marginally lower at 64%. The poll was conducted by news app Inshorts in collaboration with marketing agency Ipsos. It said that out of the 63,141 users who responded to the question on bringing Narendra Modi to power again, 70%voted yes, 17% voted no and 13%were undecided. The poll was conducted on the app. Compared to other categories, support for the government is marginally lower among females with 64% respondents voting yes, 18 % voting no and 18% remaining

for any anti-Dalit violence. "Some (people) are selectively picking issues and blaming Modi. Politics over social imbalances is a disservice to society, to all those who have faced injustice for generations." He said some people had a problem with the fact that "Modi is a devotee" of Dalit icon B. R. Ambedkar. He recalled how he celebrated Ambedkar's 125th
anniversary and how the UN celebrated and 102 countries around the globe observed the day. "I'm devoted to the welfare of all Dalits, the oppressed, underprivileged and deprived. Those who have fed this country with the poison of caste divide have destroyed the country." The caste issue is going to be critical for the 2017 assembly elections in Uttar
Pradesh that has a sizeable Dalit population and where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has not been in power since 2002. Elections are due next year also in Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa, and Manipur. Modi said the BJP will fight these polls on the issues of development, and its focus will be jobs, peace, unity and social justice. "As far as the BJP is concerned, we will fight on de-
velopment issues only. Our focus will be the welfare of farmers, villages, jobs for the youth and we will stay committed to the cause of social justice. The Prime Minister also rejected any notions that he was following the politics of vendetta. Asked if he will not be sparing any "dynasty" when targeting black money, Modi said he has never tried to get any file opened
undecided, according to the second edition of "Youth of the Nation Poll". In the survey, conducted between July 25 and August 7, 80% of the respondents were aged below 35. "We are delighted to validate the survey methodology and execution by providing an insight into what is young urban India's outlook on governance, politics, business, career and technology, objectively," said Azhar Iqubal, CEO and Co-Founder of Inshorts. In the poll, more than half (57%) of the respondents were in favour of a liquor ban in certain states. When asked if student politics should be banned in college campuses, 61% respondents voted yes, 32% said no and seven per cent voted "cannot say". Among students, 54% voted yes,
to settle political scores. "I do not think from a political perspective... I have been a Chief Minister for 14 years. I never opened a file for political reasons. We have not advised opening any file from a political point of view. "This interpretation that we are not sparing any dynasty is wrong," he said, in an oblique reference to Congress President Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law
37%t voted no and 9% said they were undecided. On the rise in atrocities against Dalits and minorities in the last two years, 33% said it was true, 46% voted no and 21% were undecided. Among women respondents, 38% said Dalits and minorities were getting a raw deal while 35% voted no and 27% went for "cannot say". According to Amit Adarkar, CEO, Ipsos India, the way youth perceive national issues across different domains was insightful. "After all, these are all educated, tech-savvy youngsters with a point of view. And their voice counts," Adarkar said. Forty nine per cent respondents approved of the government's handling of protests in Kashmir after the death of Burhan Wani while 24% disapproved of it.
Robert Vadra's questionable land deals in Haryana. On the economic front, Modi said when he assumed the office in 2014 he wanted to bring a White Paper on the condition of the country's economy but refrained from it in the national interest. "Many people ask me what has been the biggest mistake we made in two years. When I think about it now, I feel, before
presenting the first budget I should have tabled a White Paper on the economic condition of the country... We had this thought," he said. "Politics said you must reveal the situation, but national interest said if the situation was revealed, the economy will suffer, and face a setback. So despite facing political damage, I stayed quiet." He said that the economy has seen off the worst now.

New Delhi, September 2 (pti): Seven more people died today taking the death toll in the devastating Bihar floods to 179 even as water level of the swollen Ganga started receding in many parts of the state. Meanwhile, humidity levels shot up in the national capital today oscillating between 95 and 69% after two consecutive days of heavy rains even as the mercury settled at normal level. "The maximum temperature was recorded at 33.9ºC, normal for this time of the year while the minimum was recorded at 25.5ºC, a notch below normal," a Met official said. Vaishali district alone accounted for the highest number of deaths at five, followed by Samastipur and Khagaria with one each, a statement by the Bihar Disaster Management Department said. The overall death toll in floods in Bihar has risen to 179, the statement said. The flood has been caused mainly by swollen Ganga apart from other rain-fed rivers.

India fertile ground for Zika epidemic: Lancet toroNto, September 2 (iANS): With 13 Indians already confirmed to have been infected with the Zika virus in Singapore, experts have more bad news to share. A new study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases has warned that India has all the right ingredients for a potential Zika epidemic. A combination of factors -high travel volumes from Zika affected areas in the Americas, local presence of mosquitos capable of transmitting Zika virus, suitable climatic conditions, large populations and/or limited health resources -- put India and few other countries in Africa and Asia pacific at greatest risk of Zika virus transmission, the researchers found. "An estimated 2.6 billion people live in areas of Africa and AsiaPacific where the local mosquito species and suitable climatic conditions mean that local Zika virus
transmission is theoretically possible," said study author Kamran Khan from St Michael's Hospital, Toronto, Canada. "Warmer temperatures in the northern hemisphere (when mosquitos are more active) increase the risk of new outbreaks appearing outside of the Americas," Khan added. In this study, the researchers established the ecological niche for Zika virus in the Americas where Zika virus transmission has been reported or where conditions are suitable. The researchers then gathered data on airline ticket sales from 689 cities with one or more airports in the region travelling to Africa or Asia-Pacific over a whole year - December 2014 to November 2015. The research team then modelled three different scenarios of seasonal suitability for mosquito-borne transmission of Zika virus.
Sidhu forms 'new' political front

ChANDigArh, September 2 (iANS): Former BJP parliamentarian Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday floated a new political front 'Awaaz-e-Punjab' online - putting an end to all speculation of his joining the Aam Aadmi Party. Hockey Olympian and Punjab's ruling Shiromani Akali Dal legislator Pargat Singh and two Independent legislators, Balwinder Singh Bains and Simarjit Singh Bains, have also joined hands with Sidhu. The 'Awaaz-e-Punjab' -- a political front not a party -- will be
formally launched next week in Chandigarh, party insiders said. They were featured in a poster, also posted on Pargat Singh's Facebook post. They announced the political front to contest Punjab assembly elections, slated early next year. Former captain of the Indian hockey team Pargat Singh, the sitting Akali Dal legislator from Jalandhar Cantt assembly seat, was placed under suspension along with another Akali legislator Inderbir Singh Bolaria for "anti-party activities" on July 19. "Pargat Singh, Bains brothers and we have formed a fourth alternative," Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of the cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Sidhu, told IANS. Sidhu had resigned from the Rajya Sabha on July 18, sparking off speculation that he may join the AAP. Aam Aadmi Party's state unit recently sacked chief Sucha Singh Chottepur and its suspended Member of Parliament Dharamvir Gandhi are likely to join the front along with AAP and Akali Dal rebels. Simranjit Bains said the front would contest on all 117 seats of Punjab.
In addition, the team mapped the monthly volume of travellers arriving into Africa and Asia-Pacific in order to identify countries at greatest risk of Zika virus importation across seasons. Health expenditure per capita was used as a proxy of a country's capacity to detect and effectively respond to a possible Zika virus outbreak. Countries with large volumes of travellers arriving from Zika virus-affected areas of the Americas and large populations at risk include India (67,422 travellers arriving per year), China (23,8415 travellers), Indonesia (13,865 travellers), the Philippines (35635 travellers), and Thailand (29,241 travellers). Of the countries with the largest at risk populations, the authors suggested that India, the Philippines, Indonesia, Nigeria, Vietnam, Pakistan, and Bangladesh might be most vulnerable to
impact because of their limited per capita health resources. While the analysis emphasises the potential for human infection via mosquitos, sexual transmission of Zika virus infection is now well documented. The authors said that travellers returning from affected areas would benefit from health education to prevent sexual transmission. "The potential for epidemics to occur in parts of Africa and the Asia-Pacific region is particularly concerning given that the vast numbers of people who could be exposed to Zika virus are living in environments where health and human resources to prevent, detect, and respond to epidemics are limited," Khan explained. "Our findings could offer valuable information to support time-sensitive public health decision-making at local, national, and international levels," he added.

New Delhi, September 2 (reuterS): Transport services were disrupted across India on Friday and state-run banks and insurance companies were shut as more than a million workers went on a strike, saying Prime Minister Narendra Modi was pursuing anti-labour policies. Trade unions backed by communist parties and the main opposition Congress said a government decision to raise minimum wages for unskilled workers did not go far enough and there was no social security or pensions for millions who were outside the organised sector. The workers are also opposed to the Modi government's decision to open up the railways and defence sectors to greater foreign direct investment, which they say is a way to undermine state firms. Workers in various places waved red flags and picketed outside government offices, blocked trains and roads with burning tyres and shouted slogans against the government. In New Delhi, nurses went on strike at government hospitals and courted arrest in support of higher wages, disrupting
services. "We have been putting forward our demands for the last five years. But over the last year no minister has even met the trade unions," said Tapan Sen, general secretary of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions, one of 10 groups boasting a combined membership of 180 million workers that called the strike. Since the Modi government took office in 2014, it has taken a series of incremental steps to make labour laws less onerous for businesses and attract foreign investment. But fear of a union-led backlash has made the Indian leader leave the responsibility for unshackling the labour market with states. He let his party's governments in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh states take the lead in this area. Hundreds of workers staged a demonstration in the southern city of Chennai, home to global auto firms in support of the strike while in Srikakulam, in the neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh, strikers clashed with police trying to stop them marching on government buildings.
Mother Teresa's mission lives on in Kolkata, grows worldwide KolKAtA, September 2 (reuterS): On the eve of her canonisation as a Roman Catholic saint, and 19 years after her death, the order founded by Mother Teresa of Calcutta is going strong - even without her charismatic leadership. The Missionaries of Charity gained world renown, and Mother Teresa a Nobel peace prize, by caring for the dying, the homeless and orphans gathered from the teeming streets of the city in eastern India. They also drew criticism for propagating what one sceptic has called a cult of suffering; for failing to treat people whose lives might have been saved with hospital care; and for trying to convert the destitute to Christianity. While staying true to their cause, the Missionaries of Charity say they have responded to their detractors. "There is no change in our way of treating the sick and dying - we follow the same rule that Mother had introduced," said Sister Nicole, who runs the Nirmal Hriday home in the ancient district of Kalighat, the
first to be set up by Mother Teresa in 1952. The nuns no longer picked up people "randomly" off the streets, she said, and only took in the destitute at the request of police. "Any good work will be challenged - but if the work is genuinely good it will survive such criticism and carry on to be God's true work," said Nicole. PRAYER AND WORK Hundreds of thousands are expected to gather in Rome on Sunday for a canonisation service led by Pope Francis, leader of the world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics, in front of St Peter's Basilica. Kolkata, as the former capital of the British Raj is now called, is holding prayers, talks and cultural events. But no major ceremony is planned to mark the path to sainthood for the two miracles of healing attributed to Mother Teresa. The low-key mood reflects an often-heated debate over religious intolerance in India, a predominantly Hindu country of 1.3 billion people. Although Prime Minister

Narendra Modi has said Indians felt "proud" about the canonisation, the head of a Hindu grassroots movement that supports his government provoked controversy last year by accusing Mother Teresa of seeking to convert people to Christianity. Her order denies this. Kolkata Archbishop Thomas D'Souza played down any suggestion that Mother Teresa was not loved and re-
spected by people of other faiths in a city that is home to 170,000 Roman Catholics. "Mother is certainly not a goddess to them," he told Reuters. "But she is deeply venerated and people - cutting across caste, community and creed are respectful to her work." The everyday work of the Missionaries of Charity goes on, meanwhile. On a recent day at the spar-
tan Kalighat home, male inmates with shaven heads and wearing green uniforms lay on bunks. Women ate in a canteen while others were cared for by volunteers. One inmate, a man of about 40 called Saregama, had just died. "Saregama died with dignity and care," said Sister Nicole. "We prayed for him." The number of homes that the Missionaries of Charity run has grown to nearly 750 in India and abroad, from the 600 that Mother Teresa left when she died in 1997. At Mother House, her old headquarters down a narrow lane, the mood was one of silent prayer. Inside, a notice still hung on the wall saying: "Time to see Mother Teresa: 9 am to 12 noon/3 pm to 6 pm. Thursday closed." Mother House still attracts visitors to India like Pedro Afonso, a lawyer from Brazil who had come with a friend for evening mass. He gave thanks for the miracles that will bring sainthood to Mother Teresa and said that, in Kolkata, she "had chosen the right place for her work and charity".

Uzbek President Islam Karimov passes away ALMAtY, SepteMber 2 (reuterS): Uzbek President Islam Karimov has died aged 78 after suffering a stroke, three diplomatic sources told Reuters on Friday, leaving no obvious successor to take over the Central Asian nation of 32 million people. The Uzbek government did not immediately confirm the reports. Earlier on Friday it said the health of Karimov, who has been in hospital since last Saturday, had sharply deteriorated. Long criticised by the West and human rights groups for his authoritarian style of leadership, Karimov had ruled Uzbekistan since 1989, first as the head of the local Communist Party and then as president of the newly independent republic from 1991. “Yes, he has died,” one of the diplomatic sources said when asked about Karimov’s condition. Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim became the first foreign leader to offer condolences over the death of Karimov, whose former Soviet republic has close ethnic, cultural and linguistic ties with Turkey. Karimov did not designate a successor and analysts say the transition of power is likely to be decided behind closed doors by a small group of senior officials and family members.

If they fail to agree on a compromise, however, open confrontation could destabilise Uzbekistan, which shares a border with Afghanistan and has become a target for Islamist militants. Uzbekistan is a major cotton exporter and is also rich in gold and natural gas. SUCCESSION A hint at who will succeed Karimov may come with the government’s announcement of his death - which one source said was expected later on Friday - and
whoever it names to head the commission in charge of organising the funeral. The funeral appeared likely to take place in Karimov’s hometown of Samarkand, where his mother and two brothers are also buried. Municipal authorities there mobilised public workers to clean the central streets late on Thursday. A source in the government of neighbouring Kazakhstan told Reuters on Friday that Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev planned to cut short his visit to
China and travel to Uzbekistan on Saturday, although Nazarbayev’s office later denied that. Among potential successors to Karimov are Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyoyev and his deputy Rustam Azimov. Security service chief Rustam Inoyatov and Karimov’s younger daughter Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva could become kingmakers. According to the constitution, Nigmatilla Yuldoshev, the chairman of the upper house of parliament, is supposed to take over after Karimov’s death, and elections must take place within three months. However, analysts do not consider Yuldoshev a serious player. His erstwhile counterpart in Turkmenistan, who was also supposed to become interim leader after the death of authoritarian president Saparmurat Niyazov in 2006, was quickly detained and thus eliminated from the line of succession. Whoever succeeds Karimov will need to balance carefully between the West, Russia and China, which all vie for influence in the resource-rich Central Asian region. Another task of the new leader will be resolving tensions with ex-Soviet neighbours Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan over borders and the use of common resources such as water.

UN urges Sri Lanka to redress wrongs of war

COLOMbO, SepteMber 2 (reuterS): U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Friday urged Sri Lanka to do more to redress wrongs committed during 26 years of war with Tamil rebels, including returning land and restoring the accountability of the judiciary and security services. Ban, on a three-day official visit, praised the efforts of President Maithripala Sirisena’s administration since coming to power last year to address some rights abuses committed during the war. “But more can and should be done to address the legacy of the past and acknowledge the voices of the victims,” he told a gathering in Colombo, without mentioning the army or the rebels. “Sri Lanka is still in the early stages of regaining its rightful position in the region and the international community.” Dozens of Sri Lankan nationalists, who back ousted president Mahinda Rajapaksa, on Thursday protested against Ban’s visit, demanding he leave the island and
stop an investigation into alleged abuses at the end of the civil war. Rajapaksa’s administration crushed the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 2009. The United Nations and rights groups have accused the military of killing thousands of civilians, mostly Tamils, during the final weeks of the conflict. The Tamil Tigers were also accused of widespread abuses during the conflict, such as using child soldiers and targeting civilians with suicide bombers, including an attack on the central bank in 1996 which killed nearly 100 people and wounded more than 1,000. Sirisena’s administration has established offices to look into reconciliation and missing persons while it also has returned some military-occupied lands in the north. However, Sirisena, also the defence minister, has yet to withdraw the military from the former war zones. Ban said there was still much work to be done “in order to redress the wrongs of the past and to restore the legitimacy and accountability of key institutions, particularly the judiciary and the security services”. “I also urge you to speed up the return of land so that the remaining communities of displaced people can return home. In parallel, the size of the military force in the North and East could be reduced, helping to build trust and reduce tensions.” Ban also visited northern Jaffna, centre of the wouldbe homeland of the rebels, where he said the United Nations would help Tamils in the resettlement process. Around 500 Tamils gathered in front of Jaffna library, the symbol of Tamil learning and one of biggest libraries in Asia before it was burnt by a mob in 1981, and urged Ban to help find relatives who disappeared in the war and ensure the release of political prisoners.

MOSCOW, SepteMber 2 (reuterS): Russian President Vladimir Putin said he did not know who was behind the hacking of U.S. Democratic Party organizations but the information uncovered was important, Bloomberg news agency reported on Friday. In an interview two days before a G20 meeting in China with U.S. President Barack Obama and other world leaders, Putin said it might be impossible to establish who engineered the release of sensitive Democratic Party emails but it was not done by the Russian government. “Does it even matter who hacked this data?” Putin said. “The important thing is the content that was given to the public.” “There’s no need to distract the public’s attention from the essence of the problem by raising some minor issues connected with the search for who did it,” he added. “But I want to tell you again, I don’t know anything about it, and on a state level Russia has never done this.” The hacked emails, released by activist group WikiLeaks in July, appeared to show favouritism within the Democratic National Committee (DNC) for presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and prompted the resignation of the body’s chairwoman. A computer network used by Clinton’s campaign, and the party’s fundraising committee for the U.S. House of Representatives were also hacked. Clinton, who polls show as leading Donald Trump in the campaign for the U.S. presidential election in November, has said Russian intelligence services conducted a cyber attack against her party. Some officials have suggested Moscow is trying to influence the U.S. election. Putin dismissed the allegations. “We have never interfered, are not interfering and do not intend to interfere in domestic politics,” he said. “We will carefully watch what happens and wait for the election results. Then we are ready to work with any American administration, if they want to themselves.” Relations between Russia and United States hit a postCold War low in 2014 over the Ukraine crisis, and Washington and Moscow have since clashed over diverging policies in Syria. Obama said in August he would discuss the cyber attack with Putin if Russia was responsible, but it would not “wildly” alter the two countries’ relationship. The U.S. election contest has been hard fought and frequently dominated by both candidates’ attitudes towards Russia. Clinton has rounded on her Republican rival Trump for his perceived praise of Putin and what she says is an “absolute allegiance” to Russia’s foreign policy aims. Trump, in return, has said Clinton’s own close ties to the Russian president deserve greater scrutiny. Putin said both candidates were using shock tactics and that playing “the anti-Russian card” was shortsighted. “I wouldn’t like for us to follow their example,” he said. “I don’t think they are setting the best example.”
lion sea-borne trade passes annually. Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims on parts of the sea, which is believed to have rich deposits of oil and gas. “This is very important because any accident that can lead to a major confrontation will be avoided if our navies and coast guards are communicating with each other,” a senior Philippines navy commander told Reuters. He said there had been instances in the past when Chinese vessels had not responded to radio and signal communications when they had been encountered by a Philippine Navy ship. Regardless of this agreement, the United States, Japan and Australia are expected to call on China to respect and comply with the ruling of the ar-

The Philippines new President Rodrigo Duterte said he will raising the arbitral ruling but will champion other issues, like ridding Southeast Asia of narcotics, clamping down on human trafficking and protection for migrant workers. Duterte is holding nine bilateral talks, including with U.S. President Barack Obama, Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. China’s foreign ministry said on Friday China was open to a meeting with Duterte during the summit in Laos, but as of yet no meetings had been scheduled with Chinese Premier Li Kequiang or U.N. SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon.
Childhood antibiotic use linked to higher food allergy risk NeW YOrk, SepteMber 2 (IANS): Antibiotic treatment within the first year of life is associated with an increase in food allergy diagnosis, suggests new research. The researchers found that children prescribed antibiotics within the first year of life were 1.21 times more likely to be diagnosed with food allergy than children who hadn’t received an antibiotic prescription. “Overusing antibiotics
invites more opportunity for side effects, including the potential development of food allergies, and can encourage antibacterial resistance,” said lead researcher Bryan Love from South Carolina College of Pharmacy in the US. The study involved analysis of data from 1,504 cases of children with food allergies and 5,995 controls without food allergies in the US. The study, published
in the journal Allergy, Asthma & Clinical Immunology, showed that association between antibiotic prescription and development of food allergy was statistically significant, and the odds of a food allergy diagnosis increased with the number of antibiotic prescriptions a child received. This research builds upon previous studies finding that normal gut flora is critical for developing the
body’s tolerance to foreign proteins such as food. Antibiotics are known to alter the composition of gut flora. The study’s results suggest a potential link between the rise in antibiotic prescriptions for young children and the rise in diagnosis of food allergies in children. “We need better diagnostic tools to help identify kids who truly need antibiotics,” Love said.
mature ageing of important disease fighting cells, says a study. The researchers discovered that stem cell transplant is linked to a marked increase in the “molecular age” of these immune cells by as much as 30 years in a group of patients with blood cancer. Despite the risk for significant short and long term side effects, the researchers said stem cell transplant is an extremely important treatment option. “We know that transplant is life-prolonging, and in many cases, it’s life-saving, for many patients with blood cancers and other disorders,” said the study’s lead author William Wood, Associate Professor at The Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of North Carolina School of Medicine in the US. “At the same time, we’re increasingly recognising that survivors of transplant are at risk for long term health problems, and so there is interest in determining what markers may exist to help predict risk for long term health problems, or even in helping choose which patients are best candidates for transplantation,” Wood noted. The researchers studied the impact of two different transplant types -- autologous stem cell transplant, which uses a patient’s own stem cells, and allogeneic stem-cell transplant, which uses stem cells from a donor, on 63 patients treated at the University of North Carolina Hospitals for myeloma, lymphoma or leukemia. In the study, published in the journal EbioMedicine, the researchers noted that autologous stem cell transplant had the strongest impact on molecular ageing of Tcells. The researchers examined messenger RNA (mRNA) levels for a protein called p16. MRNA expression of the gene coding for the p16 protein has been found to exponentially increase with chronological age. Strikingly, they found expression levels increased to a degree comparable to an additional 30 years of chronological age. To try to explain why autologous stem cell transplant might age T-cells faster, they speculated that the forced regeneration of bone marrow that accompanies re-engraftment may contribute to stem cell ageing. The researchers believe their findings could lay the foundation for future studies into using this age marker to enable physicians to better quantify a patient’s potential risk and benefit associated with a stem cell transplant.
Pak hit by attack on Christian colony and bombing on court peSHAWAr, SepteMber 2 (Ap): Northwestern Pakistan was struck by two separate militant attacks hours apart on Friday, when gunmen wearing suicide vests stormed a Christian colony near the town of Peshawar, killing one civilian, and a suicide bomb attack on a district court in the town of Mardan killed 12 people and wounded 54 others. Militants stormed the Christian neighborhood early on Friday morning, triggering a shoot-out in which four attackers were killed and one Christian died, police and the military said. Three security officials and two civilian guards were wounded in the attack. Army spokesman Lt. Gen. Asim Saleem Bajwa said in a statement that the attack was quickly repulsed and that security forces were searching for any accomplices. Local police official Shaukat Khan said four suicide bombers entered

the Christian colony. One of them went into a church, but no one was there at the time. He said the attackers killed one Christian in the neighborhood. It was not immediately clear if any of the suicide bombers had detonated their explosives. The quick response from the local civilian guards and security forces prevented more deaths,
Khan said. Ahsanullah Ahsan, a spokesman for Jamaat-ulAhrar, a breakaway Taliban faction, claimed responsibility for the attack. In the town of Mardan, some 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Peshawar, a suicide bomber threw a grenade at the district court before detonating his explosives, according
to government spokesman Mushtaq Ghani. A rescue official, Bilal Jalal, said at least 12 people were killed and another 54 wounded in the suicide attack at the court, among them lawyers, policemen and passers-by. He said some of the wounded in a critical condition. A local police official, Ijaz Ahmed Khan, said the
attacker apparently wanted to target a gathering of lawyers at the bar room but was thwarted by police. When a policeman asked the attacker to stop, the attacker threw a grenade at him, killing the officer, Khan said. A second policeman then opened fire at the attacker, who detonated his explosives. Lawyer Adil Hussain confirmed the police account. No group immediately claimed responsibility for court attack. Pakistan has been struck by a number of large-scale militant attacks in recent months, including a March suicide bombing targeting Christians celebrating Easter in a park in the city of Lahore that killed around 70 people. Jamaatul-Ahrar claimed responsibility for the bombing and warned of further attacks. Christians are a tiny minority in this majority Muslim nation. While some Christians live in Muslim
areas, many choose to live together in Christian-only neighborhoods. Last month, a bomb blast targeting lawyers and journalists gathering outside a hospital in the city of Quetta killed some 70 people. Jamaat-ul-Ahrar and the Islamic State group issued competing claims of responsibility for the attack. The Pakistani army said on Thursday it had prevented IS from establishing a network in the country, saying it had arrested over 300 IS militants in recent years, including fighters from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. The military also claimed it had cleared the Khyber tribal region, which is located near the Christian colony, where Friday’s attack took place. On Friday, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif issued statements condemning both attacks, saying “these cowardly attacks cannot shatter our unflinching resolve in our war against terrorism.”

New York, September 2 (AFp): Frank Lampard scored two goals in the closing minutes as New York City F.C. defeated D.C. United 3-2 to claim the top spot in Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference. The former Chelsea and England star stroked home the winning goal in the third minute of stoppage time to seal a dramatic win for City at Yankee Stadium. The victory saw the bigspending New York club move to the top of the division with 44 points, one point clear of Toronto F.C. Lampard, an increasingly influential figure for City after an injuryplagued start to his MLS career, had earlier given New York a 2-1 lead with his first goal on 85 minutes. But a towering header from Lamar Neagle leveled it for D.C. United at 2-2, with the visitors poised for a share of the points. However, Lampard's cleverly taken late strike ensured Patrick Vieira's
side would take all three points as they head toward the post-season play-offs in style. "We've been on the receiving end of some late goals and we've lost a few results late on in matches and I think that we deserved that one tonight," Lampard said afterward. "Everyone knows that I was injured for the first half of the season. I wanted to come back from June to help and I've tried to do that. I think we're improving week on week." Lloyd Sam had earlier given D.C. United the lead, rifling a low shot past goalkeeper Josh Saunders. New York struggled to break down a well-organized D.C. defense, but were gifted a route back into the game in the 79th minute. A terrible back pass from Sean Franklin sent City striker David Villa through on goal and the Spanish World Cup-winner tucked his finish between goalkeeper Bill Hamid's legs.
LoNdoN, September 2 (AGeNCIeS): Zaheer Khan has been made an honorary member of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) for life. The MCC, in a statement, said, "MCC has elected Zaheer Khan as an Honorary Life Member of the Club." Zaheer's inclusion comes weeks after the inclusion of Virender Sehwag, who became an Honorary Life Member last month. Other Indians in the club also includes the likes of Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar. Zaheer retired last year from international cricket last October after an illustrious career for India where he played the role of the pace spearhead to perfection. Although injuries plagued him in later years, he played 92 Test matches for India taking 311 wickets at an average of 32.94 runs. The 37-year-old, who played for India over 15 years in a career that spanned from 2000 to 2014, played his last match for India in 2014 against New Zealand. In that Test

match, Zaheer took a fivewicket in his final Test innings. Zaheer, widely regarded as one of the most intelligent cricketers to play for India, also took 282 wickets in 200 ODIs at an average of 29.34. Zaheer also had a long stint in the IPL playing across clubs that included RCB, Delhi Daredevils, and Mumbai Indians. The pacer is currently the captain of the Delhi Daredevils team but has been widely touted to the Indian
national team's bowling coach under Anil Kumble. John Stephenson, MCC Head of Cricket, said: "Zaheer Khan was a fantastic servant to cricket in India and an integral part of their very successful side for many years. For this reason the Club is very pleased to award him with Honorary Life Membership. "He was always great to watch when he played at Lord's and we look forward to having him back here as an MCC Member."

Neichiilieii Nikki Haralu - A life of Testimony
F
ormer Ambassador Ms. Neichiilieii Nikki Haralu passed away at her residence in Haralu Colony, in Dimapur on September 2nd of old age. She was 98 years old. The eldest of eight siblings she was born July 28, 1918 to the first Naga medical doctor Dr. Harielungbe Haralu Poilwa village in Peren district and Rükhrieü of Kohima village under Kohima district. She leaves behind an adopted daughter. Neichiilieuu, which means ‘to please all’ was true to her name. She was lovingly called Nganuo to her family. From a young age she displayed the pioneering spirit of her father being instrumental in putting together the first choir group in Kohima where she sang Soprano, the third Naga to venture out to study in the United States and becoming the first Naga Ambassador. Contrary to her father’s desire for her to follow in his medical profession Nganuo had set her heart on foraying into uncommon fields for women and Nagas in particular. She chose to channel her talent into an area that demanded a spirit of adventure, diplomacy, integrity and discipline... that of the Indian Foreign Service. She ended 26 years of service in the Ministry of External Affairs, as Ambassador to Panama from June 1978 to July 1980 with additional charge of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Her career as a diplomat saw her serve in Belgium, Italy, USA, and Sri Lanka before her retirement as Ambassador of India to Panama. Panama is the first country in Central America where India established a resident Embassy in 1973. The
historical events that took place during her tenure include the handing over of the famous Panama Canal that changed the economy of the United States, Europe and Asia. The other major event that took place was the ousting of General Anastasio Somoza Debayle, de facto President of Nicaragu in an insurrection led by the Sandinista Liberation National Front (FSLN). Early Life: Neichiilieii enjoyed a happy childhood growing up in Kohima village Her memories paint an idyllic life typical of any Naga village little girl at that time: fetching water from the wells, collecting firewood from the jungle and playing with other children. These days were enriched further with a grandfather for company who lived nearby. He was a rich farmer who cultivated paddy in jhum fields along with pumpkins and cucumber. Some of these moments etched in her memory include the days she would accompany him to the ripening paddy fields to put up the scarecrows. She refers to those times as “wonderful times, just me and my grandfather going to the field”. These carefree days soon changed after they moved into the house her father built in Choto Bosti (Chiephobozou) in the suburbs of Kohima and schooling began. But sometimes these walks instead of school would lead to the paddy fields to collect nulla (escargot) with her girlfriends.”Life was full. Everyone knew each other and we enjoyed sharing our lives and working together” is how she recalls the days past. Some things remained a constant in Neichiilie’s life as a young
girl growing up in Kohima; her nature never to remain idle. School and work in the jhum and paddy fields complimented each other. Domestic chores too were not neglected and fetching water from the well, gathering firewood from the forest for the home hearth were regular responsibilities. These were also the years she learnt to weave on the backstrap loom, even attempting to create new designs and color schemes, sew her own clothes and knit as well. She loved gardening and would dig the garden to plant vegetables. Church also formed a central part of her growing up years as she regularly attended Sunday School and the English Service. It is here she developed her love of music, especially the hymns going on to form the first choir in Kohima with Ayo Zhanikhou. They were taught music by Rev. George Supplee. The choir would accompany their teacher, Rüzhükhrie, to preach the Gospel in the nearby villages. She enjoyed sports and with Keveilhouvoü she would play hockey badminton and race games with her brothers Yao and Silie and their friends.
Education: As a young girl Neichulieii received her education from Mission school at Kohima and went on to the Welsh Mission Girls’ High School, Shillong. She graduated from the Scottish Church College, Calcutta University in 1948. She went on to complete her Master’s Degree in Haverford, USA in the year 1953 where she studied Psychology and International Relations at the State Universities of Oregon and
Haverford. Her area of specialisation was Diplomacy, International Studies. While in the United States of America to study She participated in the Social Service for Migrant Workers with the Student – In –Industry, Oregon, University of Oregon. She raised her tuition fees, by working in the carrot and beans canning mill. Similarly in Haverford College, Pennsylvania, She completed a seven week work and study field seminar on the Cherokee Indian Reservation, North Carolina. To earn her return ticket to India, She worked as Assistant Supervisor, New Jersey, State Reformatory for Women, Clinton, New Jersey, USA. Her successful career an indication of the emergence of Indian Tribal women from backwardness and an insular society. There is no denying that more and more girls from the tribal areas have taken to higher education since. In an interview to the Times of India when she reached retirement she said of her service that it was "unique experience". Asked if she felt discriminated against she replied "Not more than would happen to any woman pursuing a career but there were times I felt that it was because I was a tribal, For instance in one of my postings my seniors objected to my wearing the Chiacha (the Naga lungi) Miss Haralu feels that tribal girls have to prove that they are good as the rest until they are accepted by the society as equals". Nechiilieii Haralu has inspired many others and played a positive role in life. As among the most senior of citizens, she held steadfast to her faith in the Lord. She was an example of diligence, and her choice to be happy (she’s also up to date with current affairs and uses a cell phone). Above all, she nurtured the pioneering courageous spirit which underlined her passion for life. In her passing an era has come to an end. Bano Haralu
The importance of preserving our culture through our mother tongue
D
ressed in the latest fashion trending in the market, eating out at Chinese restaurants or KFC while comfortably listening to the most popular billboard songs and conversing in a language we feel is way above our mother tongue with thankfully the last name intact to prove our identity (at least in most of the cases) is the new breed of youngsters we have today - to which I seek no immunity. We have embraced the culture of the west so passionately that our name and language are emerging as the only visible proof of our identity as a Naga except for the few festivals which we still organise and celebrate in its due season mostly for the sake of keeping the tradition of our ancestors alive. Perhaps, these are the only countable occasions where we get to wear our traditional dress and attires to remind ourselves and those around us about our true identity. How many of us know our own folk dance or folk-song is a question I feel
embarrassed to answer myself. The values of integrity, honesty and sincerity which was once considered a prized possession and represented the social fabric of our culture has now been cheapened by the popularity of corruption, easy money laundering and bribery so much so that public officials siphoning off money meant for public welfare and development and utilising those funds for their personal and family development is becoming acceptable as part of our new developing culture; the irony is such that, the best seats or usually the front rows of the church are reserved for the best players of the depressing game. Even more depressing is to realise that corrupt and stupid people are in the majority and it is not easy to underestimate their power. We have given so much of importance to western culture over our very own and have become so westernised in the process that, naming our children with English names is encouraged and as a consequence
the only remnant of our identity has been reduced to our surname. It is worth mentioning of a 1907 letter of Rabintranath Tagore to his sonin-law Nagendranath Gangulee who had gone to America to study agriculture -“to get on familiar terms with the local people is a part of your education. To know only agriculture is not enough; you must know America too. Of course if, in the process of knowing America, one begins to lose one’s identity and falls into the trap of becoming an Americanised person contemptuous of everything Indian, it is preferable to stay in a locked room” (Page 105. The Argumentative Indian by Amartya Sen) Literally speaking, culture is defined as certain traits that are peculiar to a particular community or society like language, beliefs, values and norms ,customs ,dress, diet, knowledge and skills etc which is handed down from one generation to another through practice and propagation and sadly we seem to have compromised on most of the traits
but all hope’s not lost as in the midst of all these confusion, preserving our mother tongue is one substantial weapon that we have to save ourselves from losing grip of our culture. Let’s face it; it is common these days for children and adults alike especially in towns conversing in nagamese or English with a lame excuse that they are unable to speak their mother tongue properly. So who is to be blamed for this chaos? Is it because of the parents’ shortcomings or the children’s ignorance or is it because of the society in which we live in? Gone are the days when local artists singing in local dialects were very popular and competitive as they could make reasonable gains through the sale of cassettes but now the advancement is such that a single person in possession of a song can distribute it to the entire state within weeks through technology like Bluetooth, xender, pen drive etc. Now that somehow explains why most of our artists prefer the English language. The same applies for the
authors and writers who find more readers and fans in the English language than in their local dialects. Kindly be reminded , I do not wish that we wear our traditional attires everyday to show that we belong to this and that tribe; nor do I mean that we should listen to only local songs or fill our music devices with only our local songs but what I pray and hope for is that everyone of us in our own circle and family should emphasise on the importance of giving utmost importance to conversing in our mother tongue with our siblings and friends without alienating those who do not speak the same tongue. Fortunately, home is the base for preserving our culture and we must not lose the skill of speaking in our dialect to prove our identity anytime anywhere. Another feasible suggestion is to conduct our respective tribe’s worship or fellowship in our own dialect albeit it is understandable that our language do not possess very rich vocabulary which makes Eng-
lish unavoidable on most occasions. Lastly but certainly not the least, if only we could really emphasise the importance of naming our children and wards with our own local names, which might cause a temporary disappointment in the young minds but they will learn of its importance or significance in due course of time. Dear folks, let’s join our hearts and minds together to curb this problem as this is not a one man’s fight or a few tribe’s battle but a common problem which we need to recognise as a reality and fight together and henceforth avoid becoming a Naga by blood but western in taste, style and conduct or even worse resent anything Naga to the point of assisting the demise or extinction of our mother tongue. Maybe it’s about time we promote our culture so vigorously that others will be genuinely compelled to learn more about our culture. God bless and Kuknalim. eadpool star Ryan Reynolds paid out from his own pocket to keep the screenwriters of the film on sets. The 2016 released sci-fi thriller’s writers, Paul Wernick and Rhett Rheese revealed that the 39-year-old actor spent a lot of his own money ensuring the movie had only the best quality control procedures in place, reported Digital Spy. “We were on set every day. Interestingly, Ryan wanted us there, we were on the project for six years. It was really a core creative team of us, Ryan, and the director Tim Miller. “Fox interestingly wouldn’t pay for us to be on set. Ryan Reynolds paid out of his own money, out of his own pocket,” Wernick and Rheese said. Deadpool is currently the most successful X-Men
film to date, beating Days of Future Past and the recent Apocalypse at the box office. Meanwhile production on Deadpool 2 is expected to start early in 2017 with Reynolds, Miller, Simon Kinberg and Wernick and Rheese. But that is not all for Marvel and Deadpool. Spanish director Pedro Almodovar is keen to create
a new Deadpool film with Quentin Tarantino. The Oscar-winning filmmaker has never made an English language film, despite numerous offers to take his talents to Hollywood. However the 66-yearold’s head has been turned by the success of Tim Miller’s anarchic superhero blockbuster Deadpool, and he’d love to team with Tar-
antino to make a follow-up, reported Contactmusic. “I’d love to do that (direct a Deadpool movie), but the script would have to be by Quentin Tarantino, who would be perfect for this movie,” he said. “I’d like to co-direct that script with him. That would be a real possibility, if he wanted to do it.” Source: IE

Hamilton tops Monza times, reboots title bid
C M Y K
MONZA, SEptEMbEr 2 (AFp): A happy Lewis Hamilton bounced back to top the times ahead of his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg in Friday's second free practice for this weekend's Italian Grand Prix. The championship leader and defending three-time world champion, who leads Rosberg by nine points in the title race, was second behind him in the opening session, but re-booted his title bid with a strong showing in the afternoon. On a hot late summer's day at the old Autodromo Nazionale in Monza's former royal park, the 31-yearold Briton clocked a best lap in one minute and 22.801 seconds to outpace German Rosberg by 0.193 seconds. Hamilton is seeking to complete a hat-trick of successive Italian wins and to claim his 50th Formula One victory in Sunday’s race. "It's been a really good day," said Hamilton. "Monza is an amazing track to drive and the fans always come out to show their support. We made good progress through our programme across the two sessions and our long run pace felt good. "We split the tyre compounds between Nico and myself, so we could learn as much as possible going into qualifying and the race and we're looking quite strong. "We've still got some work to do this evening to analyse the data and prepare the car, but I'm confident we can take the fight to the rest of the grid." Rosberg said: "The car felt pretty good during P1, but we need to work on the balance overnight as the one lap pace didn't feel 100 per cent." Sebastian Vettel was third fastest ahead of his Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, the Italian team closing the gap behind the Mercedes to less than half a second as they made use of their latest up-

Italian Grand Prix to remain at Monza
F
ormula One’s veteran commercial ring-master Bernie Ecclestone announced Friday that Monza has agreed a new deal to retain the Italian Grand Prix. He said a new-three year deal was agreed, keeping the Italian race at the famous old high-speed circuit from 2017 to 2019. "Regretfully, legally, we can't sign it here," said Ecclestone. "But, and more important, is that we have an agreement thanks to our lawyers -- and we are getting all the small details sorted. "There is no problem in having the race here. The contract will be for three years, but I hope we are here for 100 years." Briton Ecclestone, 85, and the president of the International Motoring Federation (FIA) Frenchman Jean Todt sat either side of Italian motor sport chief Angelo Sticchi Damiani at Friday's press conference. Source: AFP graded power units. "It is a pretty small step and we wouldn't put anything in the car that wouldn't improve our performance," said Raikkonen. "It's just a normal progress. We try to improve all the areas and that's one of them. It's a small thing, but it's the right direction..." "We have decent speed," Vettel added. "The car feels good, but we need to make it feel good in every corner. The first impression is positive. "We’ve had worse Fridays, but Mercedes are looking very strong, similar to last year. They seem to be very competitive. We need to focus on ourselves and then we can be a lot closer." Under-scrutiny Dutch teenager Max Verstappen, who was given a gentle warning about his aggres-
sive style of driving by the FIA’s Race Director Charlie Whiting earlier, was fifth ahead of his Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo. Ricciardo said: "Position-wise, we are more or less where we expected... At least I expected Ferrari to be behind Mercedes here, but I didn't expect the gap to be as big as it is." Former Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso was seventh for McLaren ahead of Valtteri Bottas of Williams with Romain Grosjean of Haas and Jenson Button, in the second McLaren, completing the top ten. Felipe Massa, who on Thursday announced his impending retirement from F1, was 11th in his Williams and Dane Kevin Magnussen, who limped away from a high speed crash in his Renault in Belgium last Sunday, was 19th.
Lionel Messi makes scoring return, Brazil sink Ecuador
MONtEviDEO, SEptEMbEr 2 (AFp): Lionel Messi scored the winning goal on his return from a short-lived international retirement as Argentina defeated Uruguay to take control of South America's 2018 World Cup qualifying race. Messi had stunned the footballing world in June after vowing to never play for Argentina again following an agonizing defeat to Chile in the final of the Copa America Centenario. But that tearful farewell was a distant memory at Mendoza's Estadio Malvinas on Thursday as the Barcelona superstar orchestrated a 1-0 victory over the two-time World Cup winners. Messi lashed home the winner on 42 minutes with his low shot taking a wicked deflection to deceive Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera at the near post. After wards Messi paid tribute to the rapturous applause he received throughout. In the dying minutes one young fan sprinted onto the pitch and nearly flattened the five-time world footballer of the year with a congratulatory hug. "I am grateful to the people for the treatment, for the love," Messi said, insisting his retirement announcement in June was genuine as he digested a third defeat in a final with Argentina in as many years. "I wasn't trying to cheat anyone, I said what I felt. (Now) I feel happy," Messi said. Argentina's win came after a superb backs-tothe-wall defensive effort in the second half when they had been reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of young Juventus striker Paulo Dybala just before half-time. Dybala, 22, was escorted from the pitch in tears after the red card.

Argentina's win leaves them in first place in South America's marathon round-robin qualifying campaign with 14 points from seven games. - Jesus the savior for Brazil Elsewhere Thursday, there was an impressive win for Brazil over Ecuador in the thin air of Quito, which is situated a dizzying 2,850 meters (9,350 feet) above sea level. Brazil had never won a qualifying game in the Ecuadoran capital before, but two goals from teenage prodigy Gabriel Jesus and a penalty from Neymar handed the five-time world
champions a 3-0 victory. Jesus, the 19-year-old who signed for English side Manchester City from Palmeiras in August, was outstanding, underscoring his status as the brightest talent in Brazilian football. Jesus won the penalty for the first goal after bursting into the area and drawing a foul from Ecuador goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez. Neymar duly converted before Jesus doubled Brazil's lead three minutes from time with a sublime flicked finish from Marcelo's low cross to make it 2-0. Jesus then added a
third in stoppage time with a crisp finish into the top corner. The win left Brazil in fifth place overall in the standings with 12 points from seven games. In other matches on Thursday, Colombia defeated Venezuela 2-0 in their port city stronghold of Barranquilla. Goals from Real Madrid star James Rodriguez and Macnelly Torres secured the points for Colombia, who would have won by more had it not been for two missed penalties in the final 10 minutes. MENDOZA, SEptEMbEr 2 (rE utErS): Lionel Messi’s triumphant Argentina comeback has been tempered by a hint he may not be fit to play in Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier in Venezuela. Messi, who had gone back on his decision to quit the team following their Copa America final defeat in June, scored the only goal in a 1-0 home win over Uruguay on Thursday that sent Argentina to the top of the South American group. However, the Argentina captain said he had a groin pain and had to think about his fitness at the start of a busy season for his national side and his club Barcelona. “My groin is hurting a lot, from before this match,” Messi told reporters. “We’ll see, I always want to be (in the team)… but there are also a lot of important matches coming up.” bia level with Ecuador and Uruguay on 13 points, just behind leaders Argentina. Paraguay meanwhile are level on 12 points with Brazil after scoring a stormy 2-1 win over South American champions Chile in Asuncion. Oscar Romero and Paulo da Silva fired Paraguay 2-0 up after only nine minutes before Arturo Vidal pulled a goal back just before half-time. A fractious second half ended with Chile defender Gary Medel being sent off in the closing stages as Paraguay held on. In the day's other game, Bolivia defeated Peru 2-0 in La Paz.
Serena, Murray roar into third round Verstappen handed a 'gentle warning'
MONZA, SEptEMbEr 2 (rEutErS): Formula One's governing body has given Red Bull's Max Verstappen a "gentle warning" about his driving after a controversial Belgian Grand Prix, team principal Christian Horner said on Friday. "(FIA race director) Charlie (Whiting) was keen to show him a replay of Spa," Horner told Sky Sports television at the Italian Grand Prix. "It was a gentle warning to say 'that''ll be a black and white flag'...a bit of a warning." A black and white flag can be waved, once only, at a driver during a race to warn him that he has been reported for unsporting behaviour. If the driver does it again, a black flag will be shown which tells him he has been excluded and must return immediately to the pits. Verstappen tangled with Ferrari drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel at the start in Spa and then aggressively defended against Raikkonen when the Finn tried to pass later in the race. Raikkonen, the 2007 champion, accused the 18-year-old of forcing him to brake by changing position and expressed concern that he had acted in that way as
payback for what had happened earlier. The Formula One paddock has been divided by Verstappen's actions, which were not punished by race stewards at the time, with some feeling the Dutch youngster had done no wrong while others condemned him. "In the middle of the straight you are allowed to do one move as long as the other car is not alongside you," commented McLaren's double world champion Fernando Alonso, who felt Verstappen had not broken that rule. Whiting met the two Ferrari drivers on Thursday and will talk to all of them later on Friday in the regular pre-race briefing. Horner said Verstappen, the youngest race winner in the sport's history and already attracting a considerable following as a rare talent and rising star, cared little about what the others thought. "Like any 18-year-old, (the criticism) seems to be going in one ear and out the other," he said. "He really doesn't care, he's focused on his own job, he's not intimidated by the surroundings he's in and I think that's what marks him out as a real talent and star of the future."
Corrigendum Apropos the news item ‘Another Naga makes entry in National Arena’, the name of the 18-year old footballer should be read as Hitova Ayemi and not as rendered. The Morung Express regrets the inadvertent error made.
Video replays provide refs with decisions in 10 seconds
bAri, SEptEMbEr 2 (Ap): In 10 seconds, Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers got all the feedback he wanted from the two assistants examining video replays in a truck outside the stadium. Instead of sending off France defender Djibril Sidibe for a hard foul into the left leg of Italy midfielder Daniele De Rossi three minutes into a friendly, Kuipers pulled out a yellow card instead. It's exactly what FIFA was hoping for from video assistance tests for referees - keeping interruptions to a minimum and maintaining the flow of play. “The feedback I got in just 10 seconds convinced me to give a yellow instead of sending off the player,” Kuipers said Friday, a day after France's 3-1 win. FIFA President Gianni Infantino hopes “video assistant referees” will be used at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. “Last night a page of football history was written,” said Infantino, who attended the match in Bari. “Finally, after years of words, we've moved
on to facts.” Experiments are also being held in national club competitions this season, including Australia's A-League, the Bundesliga, the league and cups in Portugal, Major League Soccer, and Serie A. Video replay officiating would be restricted to decisions on goals being scored, penalties being awarded, players being sent off, and cases of mistaken identity. The only technology currently used in soccer is to rule on disputed goals. “We can no longer allow the entire world to see something big where the only one who can't see it, because it's not permitted, is the referee,” Infantino said. Kuipers also relied on video assistance when Italy protested for a perceived handball by Layvin Kurzawa following a header from De Rossi in the first half. “I noticed that the players accepted the decisions more calmly,” Kuipers said. “It's better for everyone, even for the refs so they're calmer and surer of themselves.”

World number one Williams defeated fellow American Vania King 6-3, 6-3, her 306th Grand Slam singles match win tying her with Martina Navratilova for the most ever for a woman. "This one's kind of cool," she said of her latest milestone, "to win 306." There could be more history in store for Williams as she seeks a seventh US Open title and a 23rd Grand Slam singles crown, both of which would be Open Era records. She fired 13 aces, with a total of 38 winners against 87th-ranked wild card King, and said the troublesome right shoulder that has hindered her since Wimbledon wasn't a prob-
lem. "So far, so good," said Williams, who was cheered on by rap mogul Jay Z and his pop superstar wife Beyonce as she booked a meeting with 47th-ranked Swede Johanna Larsson for a place in the last 16. Despite wrapping up the victory in just 65 minutes, Williams said there was plenty of room for improvement. "I feel like I made a lot of errors," Williams said. "What really matters is I got the win. Hopefully I'll just get better." By the time Williams opened the night session the rain that prompted organizers to close the new roof on Arthur Ashe stadium had tailed off. Murray had played with it drumming on the roof, adding to the noise the US Open is famous for. "You can't hear anything, really," said Murray, who downed tenacious Spaniard Marcel Granollers 6-4, 6-1, 6-4.
"I mean, you could hear the line calls, but not so much when he was hitting the ball or even when you're hitting the ball, really, which is tough." Nevertheless, after needing seven set points to seal the first frame, Murray broke Granollers twice in the second set and once in the third to move through to a meeting with Italian Paolo Lorenzi, a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-7 (1/7), 7-6 (7/3) winner over France's Gilles Simon. Juan Martin del Potro, who has undergone four wrist surgeries since lifting the US Open trophy in 2009, closed out the action on Ashe with a 7-6 (7/5), 6-3, 6-2 victory over 19th seeded American Steve Johnson. Del Potro, ranked 142nd in the world as he battles back from the injuries that nearly cost him his career, is back in the Open as a wildcard after a sparkling run to a silver medal in the Rio Olympics.
- Wawrinka in straight sets As the showers lingered, a batch of doubles matches scheduled for outside courts were cancelled. Among those who didn't have the luxury of the roof, 2014 finalist Kei Nishikori of Japan waited out a third-set rain delay en route to a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over 20-year-old Russian qualifier Karen Khachanov. Third-seeded Swiss Stan Wawrinka, a two-time semi-finalist, was also up against a qualifier, advancing with a 6-1, 7-6 (7/4), 7-5 victory over 243rd-ranked Italian Alessandro Giannessi. Eighth-seeded Austrian Dominic Thiem downed Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 to line up a meeting with Spain's Pablo CarrenoBusta, who rallied from two sets down to beat Serbian Janko Tipsarevic 3-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-4. Australian Nick Kyrgios, the 14th seed, put on a serv-
ing clinic, firing 27 aces and winning 45 of 48 first-serve points in a 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Argentina's Horacio Zeballos. Women's fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland survived an early onslaught from US Open debutant Naomi Broady to beat the Briton 7-6 (11/9), 6-3. Fired-up fifth seed Simona Halep also advanced, downing Lucie Safarova 6-3, 6-4 in a battle of former French Open finalists. Venus Williams, the sixth seed whose seven Grand Slam titles include two US Opens, coasted to the 70th US Open match win of her career 6-2, 6-3 win over Germany's Julia Goerges. The elder Williams, bedevilled by 63 unforced errors in a scrappy first-round win over Ukrainian Kateryna Kozlova, cut that to 17 in a crisp performance against the 64th-ranked German.
