Getting Started: Racing
Words: Jeff Ware
OUT OF PIT LANE
GETTING LICENCED
Starting racing isn’t so hard…
Every club has a secretary who looks after licencing and they will be more than happy to guide you through the process that includes an open book theory test. If you have a civil rider’s licence or have attended a suitably accredited riding school, that should be enough to satisfy the MA State Controlling Body otherwise you may have to undergo a practical riding test to make sure you know the clutch lever from the front brake lever.
The decision to take up road racing is as old as the sport of motorcycle racing. Most of us on [Knee Down] have made that decision with varied results… Chances are that you already own a bike that can be raced. These days there are classes for just about anything with two wheels regardless of age or performance level. That’s the first step out of the way.
PROTECTION JOIN IN The next thing to do is to join a club that includes people with a common interest or are located locally. Log on to Motorcycling Australia’s website (www.ma.org.au). MA are the sanctioning body for all motorcycle racing (other than drag racing) in Australia. On their website you’ll find a full list of clubs in your state or territory. While you’re on the MA site, download their excellent ‘Getting started in Motorcycle Sport’. Don’t be scared about checking out a few clubs before joining one. They’re all unique and finding the right one for you will make the transition to road racer much easier.
12
While we don’t like talking about it, people do fall off motorbikes on racetracks. MA requires all licence holders to have their own personal Ambulance subscription. We’d recommend that you have your own income protection and that it includes coverage for motorcycle racing. No one wants to use up all of their sickies and holidays recovering from an accident. Protection also includes your own riding gear. Starting from the top, you require a full-face helmet that is approved to AS1698, which is the Australian Standard for helmets for street use anyway. Alternatively, MA also recognises international standards so if your helmet does not have AS1698 you can check with MA that it is ok to use. A set of one-piece leathers that fit is the preferred way to cover the larger parts of your anatomy. Make sure they’re roomy enough for you to wear the mandatory back protector underneath, and a chest protector is recommended too. The best leather gloves you can afford will keep your digits intact if you’re sliding down the track and using your hands as brakes. There’s a huge variety of suitable boots on display at any decent-sized motorcycle shop. Take the time to find a pair that fit properly without being too tight. Tight boots will ruin your day very quickly.
GETTING YOUR BIKE READY If you’re not overly mechanically minded, don’t worry, your local bike shop should be able to check your bike over before you venture on track for the first time. A full service and tune-up now could save you from a big bill later. All racing classes have common rules to ensure bikes don’t fall apart or leak fluid on the track. Before you’re allowed on track at any race meeting, your bike will be inspected by a scrutineer. Don’t give them a hard time if they pull you up and point out something you’ve forgotten. The majority of them have been doing this for a long time and don’t want to see anybody get hurt due to an oversight. Full rules for your class are in the Manual of Motorcycle Sport available at www.moms.org.au. But keep in mind that bike preparation is very important and quite in-depth for racing. Like you, your bike needs controlled fluid retention.
the case with your bike, having shiny new parts is a waste if you are learning. You will inevitably test your riding gear. A lot. So go for an affordable compromise. Don’t buy the most expensive graphics on your lid if a plain white one is going to be cheaper, for example. But don’t skimp on quality…
YMF R3 Cup and GP Juniors cup Two Championships that are great starting points and avenues for younger and beginner racers, is the Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) R3 Cup and GP Juniors Cup.
TIPS FOR KEEPING COMFORTABLE Assuming you’re like the rest of us, you’ll be carting yourself and your bike to the track in a trailer, ute or van. There are a few things we’d advise you chuck in. These may sound obvious but people still forget. Grab an esky and fill it with ice bricks and bottles of cold water. You’ll be amazed at just how easy it is to dehydrate while racing on a hot day. Even though racetrack food has improved from the days of dodgy hamburgers and warm soft drinks, chuck snack-type things in the esky along with sandwiches. You’ll burn off a lot of calories in a day and replacing them with racetrack food could send you broke. Not all racetracks offer covered pit areas so some sort of shade device will make your day much more enjoyable. Don’t forget the sunscreen either. The most important thing to take with you is a sense of humour. On its own this could be the difference between a day best forgotten and one of the best experiences of your life. If you think you can’t afford to race think again. It costs the same to race as it does to maintain a road bike or a track day bike, and entry fees for club racing are around that of a ride day – but you get a lot more laps at many race meetings…
GET YOUR GEAR ON You need the best you can afford and then some more. Spend more on your gear than your bike if you have to but, like is
Costs involved in these classes are minimal so that getting started in road racing will be attractive to as many people as possible. This means riders can thrive and develop their road craft and race skills while on comparative machinery. Because Yamaha YMF R3 Cup riders utilise the same bike model in the form of the Yamaha YZF-R3, the YMF R3 Cup allows competitors to race on an even playing field that highlights and fosters talent as well as making it possible to purchase a race ready YMF-R3 to take on the rest of the field! The GP Juniors compete on Yamaha YMF-R15’s. The GP Juniors feature young racers going head to head while learning the fundamentals of racing. The next generation of road racing talent can emerge from this class. The GP Juniors Cup is a fantastic platform suited to entry level competition. The Yamaha R15’s handling and power delivery characteristics are predictable, dependable and reliable. The GP Juniors Cup provides an immense opportunity for young riders to develop and advance in their sport. With the full backing and support of well-established organisations, at an affordable price, as the rider’s hone their skills and progress, who knows where they will end up!
THE BIKE You’ll need to spend a bit of time here – all fluid retaining fasteners need to be lockwired, fairings need catch areas in the bellypan, you need a tether kill switch, brake callipers bolts need to be lockwired and you need good suspension, brakes and bodywork. You also need a bullet-proof engine because you are going to thrash it beyond any ride day or road level of thrash! No need to spend big. Start racing on an old bike that you can crash. A lot. Because you will…

YMF partner with ASBK for 2018 Motorcycling Australia (MA) are thrilled that long-term partner Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) will continue as the official naming rights partner of the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK) for a fourth consecutive year. The partnership doesn’t stop there, with Yamaha Motorcycle Insurance (YMI) once again being the naming rights sponsor for the YMI Superbike class and YMF again stepping up to brand the YMF R3 Cup. YMF’s partnership with the ASBK Championship is a massive boost for the season, and shows the Yamaha marque has confidence in the direction ASBK is heading. This collaboration, that incorporates one of the most respected manufacturers in the Australian motorcycle industry, just adds to the most anticipated season to date, with pulsating TV coverage, live streaming, near capacity grids and fierce competition. 2018 will be a huge year in ASBK for Yamaha Australia as its Factory Racing Team has expanded to three riders including; Wayne Maxwell and Daniel Falzon (Yamaha Racing Team, YZFR1M) in the YMI Superbike Class. Yamaha will also be debuting its brand new YZF-R6 in the hands of Cru Halliday (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R6) who will be gunning for the Supersport title on the bike’s debut year! YMF Group General Manager Financial Services, Brad Ryan commented; “Our level of involvement with ASBK is very enjoyable and rewarding. What we have found over the years with our sponsorship is that year upon year the championship has continued to be philosophically focused on the same things

that we are, and that is primarily the growth of the industry and development of the sport. It is our view that if we invest in the sport, everyone will benefit. “We have believed for a long time, that as the only specialist finance and insurance company in the industry, we have to participate in motorcycle racing at a level quite different from everyone else, and that means putting in a greater level of support. “The growth of ASBK has been absolutely fantastic for everyone, including YMF and YMI. I think the job the ASBK Team have done is extraordinary and the championship has gone from strength to strength. It has continuously improved with the results now plain to see. “ASBK is part of an overall strategy for us at YMF and YMI and we are excited to continue our support of not just at the highest level (ASBK), but also down to the grass roots level as well,” Ryan finished. MA CEO, Peter Doyle shared his excitement for YMF and YMI’s commitment adding; “MA is thrilled to welcome back Yamaha Motor Finance to the ASBK for a fourth consecutive year. Both brands have enjoyed a positive and collaborative relationship, that has put the necessary steps in place for ASBK to thrive. “In 2017, we saw unprecedented levels of growth, not only of rider and team involvement, but fan and spectator involvement too. It is with YMF that 2018 is set to be one of the most incredible years of racing on record,” Doyle finished.

round 2 review GET UP TO SPEED WITH ALL THE ACTION FROM ROUND 2 OF THE ASBK YMI Superbike Troy Herfoss (Penrite Honda Racing, Honda CBR1000SP) took full advantage of his home track at Wakefield Park Raceway for Round 2 of the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK), taking out race two and the overall win. Finishing the round with a second place in race one and a win in race two means Herfoss left Goulburn with the championship lead. Wayne Maxwell (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R1M) continued his fight back in the championship after a fall in race one at Phillip Island, winning race one and placing second in race two which handed him second overall at Wakefield Park Raceway. Race one saw Maxwell take an incredible victory by managing to out drag Herfoss down the start finish straight. The two were in a league of their own for the entire race and it all came down to the final lap, when Maxwell managed to snare the victory. Josh Waters (Team Suzuki ECSTAR, GSXR-R1000R) continued his consistent start to season 2018, finishing in third place after falling off the pace of Maxwell and Herfoss. Daniel Falzon (Yamaha Racing Team, YZFR1M), Troy Bayliss (Desmosport Ducati, Panigale R FE) and Bryan Starring (Kawasaki BCPerformance, Kawasaki ZX-10R) enjoyed a tussle for fifth position, with Falzon getting the better of the battle to finish fifth, whilst Starring managed sixth and Bayliss settled for seventh.
Race two had all the makings of race one but this time Goulburn local Herfoss, would get the better of the battle with Maxwell taking out the race. The pair once again made a break from the pack and showed great pace around the track, Waters was involved early but once again just could keep the pace with the front two. Herfoss cleared away after lap 12 and started to record laps in the 58s bracket, as he stormed across the finish line. Maxwell had to settle for second place whilst Waters grabbed third place, Waters has finished on the podium in all five races this season. Falzon completed his weekend with another fourth-place finish whilst Bayliss rounded out the top five. Herfoss now leads the YMI Superbike Championship with 105 points, followed by Waters with 95 points and Maxwell has moved into third with 88 points.

Kawasaki Supersport Cru Halliday (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R6) couldn’t have had a better weekend at Wakefield park for round two of the Kawasaki Supersport class, picking up both race wins to go with his pole
position. Halliday was a step above the rest of the field, pulling away from the field in both races to show how capable the new YZF-R6 is the right hands. Goulburn local Tom Toparis (Cube Racing, Kawasaki) backed up his three race wins at Phillip Island with two second place finishes at Wakefield Park Raceway, Toparis just couldn’t match the speed of Halliday. Lachlan Epis (ResponseRE, Kawasaki ZX-6R) took out third place in race one as he took the chance to race in ASBK whilst he had a break from the World Superbike Championship. In race two Epis had a crash which left the door open for Broc Pearson (Yamaha Motors Australia, Yamaha YZF-R6) to make his move and finish race three in third position. Toparis still holds onto the lead in the Kawasaki Supersport Championship standing with 115 points, but Halliday has shrunk the gap to just four points with 111 points. Broc Pearson sits in third position with 85 points.
Australian Supersport 300 The Australian Supersport 300 class is wide open this year at the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK), with Zac Levy (Puma RV’s, Yamaha YZF-R3) taking out two of the three races and now leaves Goulburn, with the overall victory. Hunter Ford (Ford Brothers Racing, Yamaha YZF-R3) took out race one after enjoying a tight tussle with Levy, but it was Ford who got the better of the battle and took out the race win. Harry Khouri (Acid Racing Aust., Yamaha YZF-R3) battled his way through the sunny and windy conditions at Wakefield to snare the last spot on the podium. Levy proved to be quite the Wakefield Specialist as he took out race two, Levy was in a battle for the majority of the race with Ford, Tom

Bramich (SJG Plumbing, Yamaha YZF-R3) and Locky Taylor (LTRacing, YZF-R3). Oliver Bayliss (Cube Racing, Kawasaki Ninja) joined the lead pack on lap five, and the pack swapped position at almost every corner.
Stauffer took out race one and race three, but John Lytras (Yamaha R15) stood in the way of his perfect weekend taking out race two. Lytras claimed a second place, in race one but a fall in race three cost him a chance at fighting for the overall with Stauffer. Harrison Voight (Voight Contracting, Yamaha R15) enjoyed a consistent opening round of GP Juniors Cup, claiming a fourth, fifth and a second-place finish, to leave the weekend third overall. The young talent on display in the GP Juniors Cup is a great showcase of the future of road racing in Australia. Stauffer leaves round one of the GP Juniors Cup as the points leader, coming away with 70 points, Lytras despite his fall in race three will be second with 57 points and in third position is Voight with 55 points.
The lead pack was only separated by 0.811s with Bramich taking second, Bayliss sliding into third, Ford settling for fourth and Taylor rounding out the top five. In Race three it was Levy taking the win again to back up his race two effort, taking the win by less than a hair from Bayliss in a drag to the finish line. Bramich battled with the lead pack but couldn’t stay with the lead pair in the later stages, settling for third position. Bayliss leaves round two with the Australian Supersport 300 class points lead, sitting on top with 125 points, Levy is in second position with 117 points and Bramich is in third with 112 points. YMF R3 Cup Zac Levy (Puma RV’s, Yamaha YZF-R3) took out all three races to have the perfect round in the YMF R3 Cup at Wakefield Park Raceway for round 2 of ASBK. After qualifying second fastest, Levy saved his best riding for the races, with pole position winner Hunter Ford (Ford Brothers Racing, Yamaha YZF-R3) taking two second place finishes and third place, claiming second overall. Locky Taylor (LTR Racing, Yamaha YZF-R3) enjoyed a consistent weekend at Goulburn, finishing on the podium in all three races, with two third place finishes and a second place.
After dominating the weekends racing, Levy takes the YMF R3 Cup championship points lead with 136 points, Ford moves into second position with 119 points and Taylor rounds out the podium with 105 points. GP Juniors Cup Max Stauffer (Chris Watson, Yamaha R15) has taken out Round 1 of the GP Juniors Cup at the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK), Stauffer claimed two race wins and a second in an impressive first round performance.

Australian F1 & F2 Sidecar Championship The opening round of the F1 and F2 Sidecar Championship brought Australia’s best sidecar racers to Wakefield Park Raceway, Goulburn and did they put on a show. The opening race saw Howard Ford/Lee Menzies (California Custom Products, F1 Suzuki LCR) take out the race but the 2017 F2 Champions Mick Aloton/Chrissie Clancy (F2 Honda LCR) were hot on their heels just 1.540s off the pace. The battle for third was hard fought between, Edward Poucher/ Bronson Poucher (F2 MRE) and Jeff Brown/Darren Sheldrick (APW M-Cycles, F1 Suzuki GSXR JBR), but the Poucher combination got the better of the battle to take the last spot on the podium.
Race two was full of drama as the race was red flagged after four laps and restarted for three laps due to an accident. Trevor Love / Aimee Turner (Surfside Motorcycle Garage Honda CBR) were imposed a 10 second penalty due to a jump start. Once the race got underway cleanly it was Brown/Sheldrick who crossed the line first bouncing back from their fourth-place finish in race one. Damien Edis/Melanie Schluter (F2 Random Suz, GSXR) had to settle for second as they just didn’t quite have the pace of the leaders, whilst Richard Goodale/ Scott Goodale (F2 Shelbourne) rounded out the podium. The battle between Declan Beare/Noel Beare (Beare Boys Racing, F1 Suzuki Alvin), Howard Ford/Lee Menzies (California Custom Products, F1 Suzuki LCR) and John Clancy/Warren Grubb (J&C Contracting, F2 Suzuki LCR) was fascinating with the pack going back and fourth before the Beare combination took fourth place. Race three had a lot less drama than race two, going off without a hiccup. Ford/Menzies took out the final race on the Wakefield Park Raceway, after getting the better of the battle with Alton/Clancy who settled for second. Brown/Sheldrick wrapped up their opening round on the podium sneaking in for third position.

KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R
Do not attempt to imitate illustrated riding scenes. Always wear protective clothing and obey road traffic regulations. Overseas model illustrated. Illustrated motorcycle may vary in selected details from the production model. Illustration includes optional KTM Powerparts which are available at an additional cost.
Packed with gut-wrenching performance and evil looks, the new KTM Super Duke 1290 R is not for the faint hearted. If you think you have what it takes, challenge yourself to see what real power and precision feels like. The V-Twin power plant produces 177 hp and is the most powerful engine we have ever muscled into a street bike. The new KTM Super Duke 1290 R is one hell of a ride.

Supersport 300 entrants on Yamaha R3s on all levels of riding ability are encouraged to cross enter to the R3 Cup to be in with a chance of winning a range of prize money.
Entrants will continue to be able to purchase a YZF-R3 plus race kit at a discounted price of $7900 RRP inc GST. Customers who already have an R3 can purchase the race kit separately and parts are available from Yamaha dealers and Race Center. The Race Center support program, as per the previous two years, continues to offer assistance to all 2018 YMF R3 Cup events by providing spares and technical support and to assist in bike setup. The YMF R3 Cup Prize Pool continues with a total of $22,000 cash incentives. Watch the fiercely contested series at these venues:

GP Juniors Australia is the evolution of the Motorcycle Road Racing Development Association or “MRRDA” as it was commonly referred. 2018 marks the 12th year of competition for the national series and while the name may have changed over the years, the philosophy is exactly the same; to create a structure and provide youngsters with an avenue to greatness. To be good at any sport one has to start at a young age. Road racing is no different. Young riders learn to take responsibility for their actions and show exceptional maturity as the nature of the sport requires a mature attitude and conduct at all times. They also learn about mechanic’s, physics and engineering, all benefits that will hold them in good stead for their entire life.
Others that have used junior road racing as a springboard include, Josh Hook (2011 Australian 125cc Champion), Jed Metcher (2011 European 600cc Superstock Champion), Troy Geunther (2016 Australian Supersport Champion). Other notables that have competed in junior road racing include rapid girl Tayla Relph, Tom Bramich (2015 Australian Moto3 Champion), Matt Barton, Ben Leonard, Locky Taylor, Callum Alderson and Matt Walters.
The GP Juniors Cup will join ASBK for Rounds 2, 5 and 6 of the 2018 Championship. GP Juniors Australia is split into four categories: ages 1216 years for an Australian Championship of up to 160cc four-strokes, 85cc two strokes and the GP Juniors Cup
