WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FEB 23 - 25, 2018

Welcome from MA

Following on from an exhilarating Round 3 at The Bend Motorsport Park, Motorcycling Australia (MA) welcome you to what will be a scorching Round 4 of the 2018 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) presented by Motul Pirelli at Hidden Valley Raceway. 2018 has so far demonstrated excellent talent and competition and Round 3 was no exception, showcasing the newly opened The Bend Motorsport Park, Troy Herfoss successfully taking out the round. It was also great to welcome the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC) to our shores. As competitors travel from the chilly winter in the south to the immense heat of the north, Round 4 is set to highlight the raw fitness of each competitor, as they strive to succeed in the renowned heat and humidity in the ‘Top-End’.

For those who can’t make it to Darwin, Round 4 will be livestreamed via www.asbk.com.au and televised on SBS and Fox Sports. So no matter where you are in the world, you can access all the action straight from you TV, tablet or phone! On behalf of MA, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our partners for their commitment and continuing support, plus the support provided by the Top End Road Racing Association (TERRA) Club, the local Northern Territory (NT) Government and Motorsports NT, without whom Round 4 at Hidden Valley Raceway wouldn’t exist. Buckle up for what’s set to be a great round! Peter Doyle CEO Motorcycling Australia

WELCOME FROM YAMAHA MOTOR FINANCE On behalf of Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) and Yamaha Motor Insurance (YMI), we welcome you to the fourth round of the 2018 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) presented by Motul Pirelli at Hidden Valley Raceway . The Bend Motorsport Park delivered an exhilarating experience for the ASBK competitors, enthusiasts and spectators alike during round three of the ASBK championship. Yamaha Riders Wayne Maxwell and Daniel Falzon both had strong weekends at the state of the art facility, but it was Cru Halliday who had the most success on the new world class track taking pole and winning both races on his R6. YMF is proud to be the naming rights sponsor for the ASBK series once again this year, and YMI as the sponsor of the Australian Superbike class. These partnerships are indicative of the direction and ethos of both YMF & YMI and the results from the first three rounds have proved

4

we have some of the most talented riders in the ASBK championship and this is why we have decided to back this national championship. We are excited to see the ASBK championship head to Hidden Valley again this year to compete in front of a huge crowd of ASBK fans and we look forward to seeing which riders emerge victorious as they battle each other in the Darwin heat. To everyone making the journey this weekend, we hope you enjoy the fantastic racing of the 2018 Yamaha Motor Finance ASBK Championship Brad Ryan Yamaha Financial Services

Getting Started: Racing

Words: Jeff Ware

OUT OF PIT LANE

GETTING LICENCED

Starting racing isn’t so hard…

Every club has a secretary who looks after licencing and they will be more than happy to guide you through the process that includes an open book theory test. If you have a civil rider’s licence or have attended a suitably accredited riding school, that should be enough to satisfy the MA State Controlling Body otherwise you may have to undergo a practical riding test to make sure you know the clutch lever from the front brake lever.

The decision to take up road racing is as old as the sport of motorcycle racing. Most of us on [Knee Down] have made that decision with varied results… Chances are that you already own a bike that can be raced. These days there are classes for just about anything with two wheels regardless of age or performance level. That’s the first step out of the way.

PROTECTION JOIN IN The next thing to do is to join a club that includes people with a common interest or are located locally. Log on to Motorcycling Australia’s website (www.ma.org.au). MA are the sanctioning body for all motorcycle racing (other than drag racing) in Australia. On their website you’ll find a full list of clubs in your state or territory. While you’re on the MA site, download their excellent ‘Getting started in Motorcycle Sport’. Don’t be scared about checking out a few clubs before joining one. They’re all unique and finding the right one for you will make the transition to road racer much easier.

12

While we don’t like talking about it, people do fall off motorbikes on racetracks. MA requires all licence holders to have their own personal Ambulance subscription. We’d recommend that you have your own income protection and that it includes coverage for motorcycle racing. No one wants to use up all of their sickies and holidays recovering from an accident. Protection also includes your own riding gear. Starting from the top, you require a full-face helmet that is approved to AS1698, which is the Australian Standard for helmets for street use anyway. Alternatively, MA also recognises international standards so if your helmet does not have AS1698 you can check with MA that it is ok to use. A set of one-piece leathers that fit is the preferred way to cover the larger parts of your anatomy. Make sure they’re roomy enough for you to wear the mandatory back protector underneath, and a chest protector is recommended too. The best leather gloves you can afford will keep your digits intact if you’re sliding down the track and using your hands as brakes. There’s a huge variety of suitable boots on display at any decent-sized motorcycle shop. Take the time to find a pair that fit properly without being too tight. Tight boots will ruin your day very quickly.

GETTING YOUR BIKE READY If you’re not overly mechanically minded, don’t worry, your local bike shop should be able to check your bike over before you venture on track for the first time. A full service and tune-up now could save you from a big bill later. All racing classes have common rules to ensure bikes don’t fall apart or leak fluid on the track. Before you’re allowed on track at any race meeting, your bike will be inspected by a scrutineer. Don’t give them a hard time if they pull you up and point out something you’ve forgotten. The majority of them have been doing this for a long time and don’t want to see anybody get hurt due to an oversight. Full rules for your class are in the Manual of Motorcycle Sport available at www.moms.org.au. But keep in mind that bike preparation is very important and quite in-depth for racing. Like you, your bike needs controlled fluid retention.

the case with your bike, having shiny new parts is a waste if you are learning. You will inevitably test your riding gear. A lot. So go for an affordable compromise. Don’t buy the most expensive graphics on your lid if a plain white one is going to be cheaper, for example. But don’t skimp on quality…

YMF R3 Cup and GP Juniors cup Two Championships that are great starting points and avenues for younger and beginner racers, is the Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) R3 Cup and GP Juniors Cup.

TIPS FOR KEEPING COMFORTABLE Assuming you’re like the rest of us, you’ll be carting yourself and your bike to the track in a trailer, ute or van. There are a few things we’d advise you chuck in. These may sound obvious but people still forget. Grab an esky and fill it with ice bricks and bottles of cold water. You’ll be amazed at just how easy it is to dehydrate while racing on a hot day. Even though racetrack food has improved from the days of dodgy hamburgers and warm soft drinks, chuck snack-type things in the esky along with sandwiches. You’ll burn off a lot of calories in a day and replacing them with racetrack food could send you broke. Not all racetracks offer covered pit areas so some sort of shade device will make your day much more enjoyable. Don’t forget the sunscreen either. The most important thing to take with you is a sense of humour. On its own this could be the difference between a day best forgotten and one of the best experiences of your life. If you think you can’t afford to race think again. It costs the same to race as it does to maintain a road bike or a track day bike, and entry fees for club racing are around that of a ride day – but you get a lot more laps at many race meetings…

GET YOUR GEAR ON You need the best you can afford and then some more. Spend more on your gear than your bike if you have to but, like is

Costs involved in these classes are minimal so that getting started in road racing will be attractive to as many people as possible. This means riders can thrive and develop their road craft and race skills while on comparative machinery. Because Yamaha YMF R3 Cup riders utilise the same bike model in the form of the Yamaha YZF-R3, the YMF R3 Cup allows competitors to race on an even playing field that highlights and fosters talent as well as making it possible to purchase a race ready YMF-R3 to take on the rest of the field! The GP Juniors compete on Yamaha YMF-R15’s. The GP Juniors feature young racers going head to head while learning the fundamentals of racing. The next generation of road racing talent can emerge from this class. The GP Juniors Cup is a fantastic platform suited to entry level competition. The Yamaha R15’s handling and power delivery characteristics are predictable, dependable and reliable. The GP Juniors Cup provides an immense opportunity for young riders to develop and advance in their sport. With the full backing and support of well-established organisations, at an affordable price, as the rider’s hone their skills and progress, who knows where they will end up!

THE BIKE You’ll need to spend a bit of time here – all fluid retaining fasteners need to be lockwired, fairings need catch areas in the bellypan, you need a tether kill switch, brake callipers bolts need to be lockwired and you need good suspension, brakes and bodywork. You also need a bullet-proof engine because you are going to thrash it beyond any ride day or road level of thrash! No need to spend big. Start racing on an old bike that you can crash. A lot. Because you will…

CELEBRATING

OF SERVICE TO MOTORSPORT

1997 - 2018

YMF partner with ASBK for 2018 Motorcycling Australia (MA) are thrilled that long-term partner Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) will continue as the official naming rights partner of the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK) for a fourth consecutive year. The partnership doesn’t stop there, with Yamaha Motorcycle Insurance (YMI) once again being the naming rights sponsor for the YMI Superbike class and YMF again stepping up to brand the YMF R3 Cup. YMF’s partnership with the ASBK Championship is a massive boost for the season, and shows the Yamaha marque has confidence in the direction ASBK is heading. This collaboration, that incorporates one of the most respected manufacturers in the Australian motorcycle industry, just adds to the most anticipated season to date, with pulsating TV coverage, live streaming, near capacity grids and fierce competition. 2018 will be a huge year in ASBK for Yamaha Australia as its Factory Racing Team has expanded to three riders including; Wayne Maxwell and Daniel Falzon (Yamaha Racing Team, YZFR1M) in the YMI Superbike Class. Yamaha will also be debuting its brand new YZF-R6 in the hands of Cru Halliday (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R6) who will be gunning for the Supersport title on the bike’s debut year! Director, COO at Yamaha Motor Australia, Brad Ryan commented; “Our level of involvement with ASBK is very enjoyable and rewarding. What we have found over the years with our sponsorship is that year upon year the championship has continued to be philosophically focused on the same things

16

that we are, and that is primarily the growth of the industry and development of the sport. It is our view that if we invest in the sport, everyone will benefit. “We have believed for a long time, that as the only specialist finance and insurance company in the industry, we have to participate in motorcycle racing at a level quite different from everyone else, and that means putting in a greater level of support. “The growth of ASBK has been absolutely fantastic for everyone, including YMF and YMI. I think the job the ASBK Team have done is extraordinary and the championship has gone from strength to strength. It has continuously improved with the results now plain to see. “ASBK is part of an overall strategy for us at YMF and YMI and we are excited to continue our support of not just at the highest level (ASBK), but also down to the grass roots level as well,” Ryan finished. MA CEO, Peter Doyle shared his excitement for YMF and YMI’s commitment adding; “MA is thrilled to welcome back Yamaha Motor Finance to the ASBK for a fourth consecutive year. Both brands have enjoyed a positive and collaborative relationship, that has put the necessary steps in place for ASBK to thrive. “In 2017, we saw unprecedented levels of growth, not only of rider and team involvement, but fan and spectator involvement too. It is with YMF that 2018 is set to be one of the most incredible years of racing on record,” Doyle finished.

ASBK MID-season review with steve martin Media Release: June 18 2018 Which riders have failed to live up to expectations so far? “A huge surprise to me is the fact that Josh Waters (Team Suzuki ECSTAR, GSX-R1000R) hasn’t won a race yet in 2018. He started very well with a pole at Phillip Island but it hasn’t quite clicked yet for him. Last year he was so dominant in the second half of the season. It just goes to show how the championship has gone to a whole new level in terms of competitiveness. He needs to start to start winning and it’s probably more mental than anything. If he doesn’t win at Darwin, the rest of the field will take confidence. Three rounds down, four to go! It’s been a sensational season so far with many contenders rising to the fore. We caught up with ASBK ambassador and former Australian Superbike Champion, Steve Martin to discuss everything season 2018 so far in the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK). Which rider has caught your attention this season? “Troy Herfoss (Penrite Honda, CBR1000SP) has been the man so far. He’s been quietly going about his business, always letting his racing do the talking. Troy has a pretty commanding lead at this point of the championship, which he deserves. It’s been a new team for Honda this year and he has adjusted brilliantly to that environment. “He’s barely made a mistake all year, bar that dodgy start he had at The Bend. He still managed to come through the field and score good points. Troy is the one to watch at the moment and he’s coming to rounds like Darwin which should suit the Fireblade, I would also expect him to excel at Morgan Park.” Personal highlights of the first three rounds? “A personal highlight was seeing Daniel Falzon (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R1M) take a podium at The Bend. Daniel was leading the championship last year up until Darwin as a privateer and won several races. I think he’s got the monkey off his back now with that podium and he’s been very consistent to sit third in the standings. “Bryan Staring (Kawasaki BCperformance, ZX-10R) winning on the Kawasaki was another big story back at Round 1. That was a brilliant ride when he came all the way from 13th on the grid to claim victory. He’s one that is making the most out of the equipment he’s got. The Kawasaki and its set up seems to be finicky, but when that bike is in the zone its very competitive. “Anytime Wayne Maxwell (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R1M) gets on a bike, he’s an absolute highlight. You don’t know what you’re going to get. He can be so dominant and just when you think he’s about to take off with the championship, something happens. “The overall highlight this year is that we’ve already had three different makes of bikes win this year and Troy Bayliss (Desmosport Ducati, 1299 Panigale FE) almost took victory in the first race! The rules seem to be right at the moment and to top it off, we have seven manufacturers taking part in ASBK.”

“Towards the end of last year, many were saying that the Suzuki is in a class of its own and how their bikes couldn’t keep up with the Waters, Suzuki combination. Now we can see that Josh was riding the wheels off that bike. It seems that the others have caught up and he hasn’t been able to show the same dominance. “I expected a bit more from Glenn Allerton (NextGen Motorsports, BMW S1000RR) due to the fact that he topped the Official ASBK Pre-Season Test. He really needs to get his season back on track. The equipment is there and the team is there. We all know what he is capable of. Although it’s been a difficult one, it’s been a lot better compared to last year when he broke his leg. You can never write a three-time champion off and he can turn it around.” Which of the younger riders have impressed? “In terms of the younger riders, Kyle Buckley (Kawasaki BCperformance, ZX-10R) really impressed me at Wakefield Park. He really seems to ride well at the tighter and more technical circuits. He still needs to work on his consistency but his ride at Wakefield really stood out. Mark Chiodo (Team Suzuki ECSTAR, GSX-R1000R) is another rider that is doing what he can to learn and improve. He was really dominant in the Supersport class last year but too many crashes cost him the championship. He just needs to fly under the radar, learn his craft and he could be one to watch out for in the future.” What have you made of the return of Troy Bayliss to ASBK? “In terms of Bayliss and the Panigale, it’s a fabulous bike but it’s not the easiest to ride in the world. On its day, it can be sensational but you really have to nurse the bike around the track and Bayliss really likes to muscle a bike. Considering that, I think he’s done a phenomenal job and has shown he can still compete with Australia’s best.” What can we expect to see at Darwin? “Hidden Valley is a very fast track. It has many right-angled corners and a slow drive into the straight, so bikes with good bottom end and top end will do well there. The Suzuki has those characteristics. Aerodynamics are also very important there and lighter riders can make the difference for greater top speed. There are plenty of overtaking opportunities, but it’s hard to make a clean pass there. We could see plenty of biff and barge. It’s just the nature of the racetrack. “Waters has to be the rider to look out for and he’s ready to win after the disappointment of last round. If he doesn’t turn it around this round that might be the end of his championship run. Keep your eye out for him. Maxwell has it all to play for as well, he needs to give it his all to claim that championship lead from Herfoss. I’m sure all he has on his mind at the moment is beating him.”

round 3 review GET UP TO SPEED WITH ALL THE ACTION FROM ROUND 3 OF THE ASBK Round one overall winner Bryan Staring (BCPerformance, Kawasaki ZX10R) had to pull out of the race on lap eight after a mechanical issue saw him return to the pits. Race Two Herfoss bounced back after his poor start in race one to claim victory in race two of YMI Superbike. Herfoss showed great pace throughout the 10-lap race, making his move for the lead on lap six and didn’t look back.

YMI Superbike Troy Herfoss (Penrite Honda, CBR1000SP) took out two of the three races at The Bend Motorsport Park for Round 3 of the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK), to take out the round win and build on his championship lead. Herfoss leaves The Bend with two race wins and a third place, barring his poor start in race one Herfoss didn’t put a foot wrong. Race One There was a red flag that brought a delayed start to proceedings, this only heightened the tension and excitement on the grid for what lay ahead. Wayne Maxwell (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R1M) didn’t get the perfect start, as it was local South Australian Arthur Sissis (SA Demolition, Suzuki GSX-R1000R), who came from the third row to lead the pack into the first turn, with Maxwell and Troy Bayliss (Desmosport Ducati, 1299 Panigale) Bayliss hot on his heels. Herfoss had a nightmare on the start line when his bike didn’t engage into gear properly and he dropped down several places. Sissis couldn’t hold of the fast charging Bayliss and Maxwell, who both went past the South Australian on lap one and started to pull away from the field. Josh Waters (Team Suzuki ECSTAR, GSX-R1000R) pushed his way into that top battle and looked to mix it with the front pair. The front pack started to pull away from the field, but deeper in the pack there was a fast charging Herfoss pushing his way back towards the front, claiming the new lap record at The Bend with a time of 1:52.972. Herfoss raced to fifth position before battling it out with Daniel Falzon (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R1M) and Waters. The trio went back and forth, but Falzon and Herfoss made their move on the defending champion and set off to try track down Maxwell and Bayliss. Maxwell enjoyed a comfortable buffer of just over a second when he crossed the finish line to claim his third race win of the season, whilst Bayliss who has shown a liking to The Bend circuit, settled for second. Herfoss got the better of the battle with Falzon who is desperately looking for his first podium of the season on his new Factory Yamaha.

Maxwell got the jump off the line from pole position and controlled the early laps of the race, looking like he was going to make it two from two here at The Bend. Herfoss was patient and made the move on lap six, but once Herfoss made the move, Staring was right onto the back wheel of Maxwell. Staring made his move on Maxwell on lap eight and set his sights on trying to track down Herfoss who had pulled out to a one second lead. Staring managed to get up on the back wheel of Herfoss, but just couldn’t find a way past. Allerton finished the race like a freight train, making moves a plenty and getting to the line in fourth position, whilst behind him Falzon and Bayliss had a sprint to the line and the pair were separated by a hair, with Falzon getting the better of Bayliss for fifth position. Phillis and Stauffer enjoyed a battle that went back and fourth throughout the race, but it would be Phillis who crossed the line in seventh and Stauffer settled for eighth. The man who continues to get off the line well, Sissis continued his good starts here at The Bend and got into the first turn in third position but faded as the race went on and finished ninth. Mitch Rees (Tony Rees Motorcycles, Honda CBR) put in a solid performance to round out the top ten in race two. The biggest news out of race two was defending YMI Superbike Champion, Waters, pulled out of the race with technical issues on lap two. Race Three Herfoss has taken out a declared race three. The Honda rider managed to control the race out front and had a good battle with Falzon before the race was declared, after Bayliss crashed in the late stages of the race. Falzon grabbed his first podium in season 2018 in front of his home crowd in race three, finishing in second behind Herfoss. Falzon’s second place finish pushed him up into third overall for the weekend on his new home track. Maxwell continued his good weekend at The Bend picking up a third place in race three to hand him second overall for the round.

Waters rounded out the top five, but it was an impressive ride from Sissis who put on a show for the locals, finishing in sixth ahead of Alex Phillis (Phillis Racing, Suzuki GSXR-R1000R) in seventh.

Staring backed up his third in race two, with a fourth place in race three to end the weekend on a high after a disastrous race one where he didn’t finish.

Glenn Allerton (NextGen Motorsports, BMW S1000RR) battled throughout the nine laps and settled for eighth. Jamie Stauffer (Craig McMartin Racing, Ducati Panigale R) continues to impress in his return to ASBK took out ninth and Matt Walters (Swann Insurance Superbike, Kawasaki ZX-10R) completed the top ten.

Allerton rounded out the top five and showed some really good speed today, whilst reigning champion Waters finished in sixth for a round that was filled with frustrations, after mechanical problems forced him out of race two. Stauffer continues to impress on his return to ASBK, sliding his Ducati into seventh position just ahead of Mark Chiodo (Team Suzuki ECSTAR, Suzuki GSRX-R) who grabbed a top ten finish in eighth.

22

The battle for ninth went right down to the final straight with Phillis and Buckley duked it out, but it was Phillis who crossed the line in ninth whilst Buckley rounded out the top ten. Herfoss now leaves The Bend with a 19.5 point lead in the championship with 160.5 points, second is Maxwell on 141 points whilst his team-mate Falzon has moved his way into third position with 124 points. Kawasaki Supersport Race One Cru Halliday (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R6) has taken a convincing victory in the Kawasaki Supersport class for race one but it wasn’t without a challenge from Tom Toparis (Cube Racing, Kawasaki ZX-6R). The two battled it out for the fair majority of the race but the race pace of Halliday was simply unmatchable.

At the start, local rider John Hunt (Suzuki GSX-R600) led into the first corner followed by Croker, Toparis and Halliday. It wouldn’t take long for Toparis to take the lead followed by Halliday and Hunt. Halliday was much stronger under braking and Toparis looked like he was throwing everything he had to maintain the lead. The Yamaha rider eventually pulled off the race winning overtake with five laps to go. Meanwhile, Croker of the Mat Mladin backed squad was flying on his Suzuki. The race being a massive confidence booster for himself and the newly formed team. Another interesting battle was developing between Hunt, Giuseppe Scarcella (Kawasaki BCperformance, Kawasaki ZX-6R) and Zac Johnson (Rebuilder, Yamaha YZF-R6) for fourth. Hunt managed to get the better of the trio in that respective fight. Taking victory was Halliday followed by his rival Toparis and Croker on the podium as well. Hunt finished in a very impressive fourth followed by Johnson and Scarcella. Race Three Race three was once again won by Halliday, however the battle for the podium positions were very exciting. Taking the lead into the first corner was Croker ahead of Hunt, Toparis and Halliday.

At the start of the race it was actually Max Croker (Mat Mladin Racing, Suzuki GSX-R600) who took the lead into turn one but he was soon overtaken by Halliday and Toparis. Surprisingly, Toparis was right on Halliday’s tail and was able to identify the lines Halliday was taking throughout the track. Toparis used the sheer grunt of his ZX-6R to full effect to pass Halliday down the start finish straight and take the fight to him. Halliday had superior corner speed however, and it was only a matter of time before he would pass. After taking the lead again, Halliday made a mistake into turn five and lost the lead. Eventually Halliday reclaimed the ascendency to cruise to victory by almost three seconds in front of Toparis. Broc Pearson (1800 Approved Cairns, Yamaha YZF-R6) had a very successful but lonely third place finish on the podium.

Within no time Toparis and Halliday clawed their way through the field and it looked as if the race would be a repeat of the previous two. Halliday had upped his game however and built a massive gap to his rival. The race then turned in to who could get second, with Johnson and Croker challenging Toparis for second. Taking the victory was Halliday, 3.306 ahead of Toparis with Johnson joining them on the podium. Croker would just miss out on a second consecutive podium in fourth. Scarcella finished in fifth. As a result of his three wins, Halliday now leads the championship with 187 points. Toparis drops to second with 175 points and Damon Rees (Tony Rees M-cycles, Honda CBR600RR) elevates himself to the top three with 109 points.

Croker and Damon Rees (Tony Rees M-cycles, Honda CBR600RR) had a great battle for fourth, with Croker coming out on top and Rees having to settle for fifth. Race Two It was a much more comfortable win for Halliday in race two as he flew across the finish line to a 4.671 second victory over Toprais. The Bend Motorsport Park clearly suiting the excellent cornering capabilities of the brand-new Yamaha YZF-R6.

Race Two Bramich has got the better of his team mate and race one winner Ford to take out the second Australian Supersport 300 race here at The Bend Motorsport Park, the pair battled it out from the start line all the way to the chequered flag. Bramich on lap four pulled off one of the best saves you will see, his legs were off the pegs and he looked sure to put the bike down, but he fought through and kept the bike on two wheels and took the win. In what was a carbon copy of race one, the lead pack involved nine riders and proved fascinating, with passes on every turn and slip streaming becoming pivotal down the start finish straight. Australian Supersport 300 The wins have been shared in the Australian Supersport 300 class here at The Bend Motorsport Park for Round 3. Hunter Ford (YRD, Yamaha YZF-R3) took out race one, but Tom Bramich (YRT, Yamaha YZF-R3) grabbed race two to leave the class wide open with one race to go tomorrow. Race One Ford has taken out race one of the Australian Supersport 300 at The Bend Motorsport Park to record the first ever ASBK race win at the new circuit. Ford was involved in the front pack from start to finish. Ford made his move on lap 6 and held on to cross the line with a time of 15:31.350.

Khouri got the better of the battle for third place as he edged out Simpson, Ben Bramich (GowMoto, KTM RC 390), Relph, Crump, Levy and Taylor. The gap from Khouri in third to Taylor in ninth was just over one second, providing a nail biting battle for that last sport on the podium. If today’s racing is anything to go by you don’t want to miss the final race of what has been a captivating round three for the Australian Supersport 300 class.

“It was great racing out there with all the boys, but I couldn’t do it without my sponsors Yamaha and South Sydney Commercial. We are looking forward to race two this afternoon,” finished Ford. Bramich started the race from pole after qualifying fastest and led the race for a number of laps but got pipped on the final lap by Ford. Zac Levy (Puma RV’s, Yamaha YZF-R3) continues to improve on the new circuit and made a calculated pass on Oliver Simpson (Simpson Crash, Yamaha YZF-R3) to claim the last spot on the podium. Race Three Bramich makes it two out of three for the Australian Supersport 300 class here at The Bend Motorsport Park for Round 3. Bramich made a swift move around the outside on the final corner to cross the line first and claimed overall honours for the round. Khouri was involved in a tight last corner battle and he pushed through on the inside to get in behind Bramich and clinch second place in race three, which also handed him second overall for the round.

A group of nine riders were involved in the lead group, with passes happening in almost every corner, providing an amazing spectacle for fans at The Bend Motorsport Park. Locky Taylor (Simpson Crash, Yamaha YZF-R3) was at the back of the lead pack for most of race one before a fast finish saw him sneak into fifth, Harry Khouri (Acid Racing Australia, Yamaha YZF-R3) took sixth, Ben Bramich (GowMoto, KTM RC 390) seventh, Tayla Relph (Earmold Australia, Yamaha YZF-R3) eighth and Seth Crump (Rock Oil, KTM RC 390) took ninth. Crump led the race early on and had great pace before a few mistakes cost him dearly and he drifted down the pack. Championship leader coming into this round Oli Bayliss (Cube Racing, Kawasaki Ninja), will be looking to bounce back in race two after a mechanical issue made him withdraw just after the start.

26

Crump continued to show his improvement over the three races, sneaking in to third place. Simpson grabbed his third fourth place, but his consistency handed him third overall for the round. The battle for fifth went down to the wire, with Levy getting the better of Bayliss who bounced back after a difficult weekend and Relph grabbed seventh. As has been the case for all three races here at The Bend, the lead pack included up to nine riders throughout the seven-laps, with passes and positional changes at almost every opportunity. The gap from first to seventh was 0.924s, which just showed the quality of racing on display in the Supersport 300 class. Ford was in the mix with the lead group and led for a number of laps in race three but a crash on lap five when he got caught up with Bramich ended his chance of pushing for the round victory. Bramich leaves The Bend with the Australian Supersport 300 points lead, with 183 points. Levy sits in second place with 164 points and rounding out the podium is Khouri with 156 points.

Bayliss Ready to Make his Move at the ‘Top End’ Media Release: June 20 2018 ASBK has one of the strongest lineups in its history. Can riders such as Herfoss, Maxwell, Waters, Staring and Allerton compete on the global stage successfully? “When you look at the Australian, US and British Championships I think any of their top three riders could compete well at WSBK level. The top guys at ASBK are very strong and have been for some time in Australia. They are certainly not easy guys to beat that’s for sure!”

The return of Troy Bayliss has been monumental, but the Desmosport Ducati rider still wants one thing, to stand on the top step of the podium. With not long until he is back on the Panigale, Bayliss gives us the lowdown on his season so far, what we can expect at Darwin and his future in the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK). How have you recovered from that tumble at The Bend Motorsport Park? “The recovery has gone well, after a little break with a bone. I guess you could say that I’m lucky that we have had a winter break between the rounds to let the body heal up. I’ve also competed in the NSW Supermoto Championships and unfortunately hit my foot on a curb and did some damage to that. I’m all good to go for Darwin now though!” Happy with how the year has gone so far? You’ve been close to fighting for some wins. “It’s been passable for me. Happy enough with how the year has progressed, but I’m really looking to go one better and grab a win soon. I’m hoping Darwin can be where we pick up that first victory of the year. We had a test at Morgan Park a couple of weeks ago and we’ve made some real headway on the bike. I’m feeling confident and fit, can’t wait for the next round.”

Are you a fan of the Hidden Valley Raceway circuit? “I really like the track. Last year I teamed up with Oli (Bayliss) for the three-hour race there racing on the 300 and I’m a huge fan of the track itself. I can’t wait to ride a Panigale at Hidden Valley. The middle section of the track is my personnel favorite and that’s typically where the majority of the crowd sit. The city of Darwin itself is a really cool place. Love living on the Gold Coast, but Darwin has its own vibe and I’ve got a few friends that work there as well that will come down to check out the race. The locals really get behind us.” Have you considered your future in ASBK beyond this year? “It’s been very funny to see how this year has played out and getting back on the bike. At the start of the year I was a little worried to see how competitive I would be, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised how I’ve been able to fight at the front. We’ll see how the last few rounds go. I would like to stay on for a bit because I’ve been competitive on the bike. As soon as I show signs that I’m not on the pace, then I will give it up.” With the Panigale V4 on show floors would this be a model Desmosport Ducati would consider racing next year? “I would love to race the Panigale V4, but it’s all up to whether we could get our hands on the upcoming race homologation special. The V4 is 1100cc so we would have to wait for an R model and bring it back to 1000cc which would make it able to race in ASBK. Australia can always get these models a little late as well. It’s quite likely we could be back on the 1299 Panigale for another season.”

The Panigale seems to be competitive at every track this year, has the bike taken a major step forward for this season? “It’s been thereabouts at every track we’ve been to this year and we haven’t been far off from going all the way. We’ve got some brand-new parts to debut at Darwin that should help the package. We are quietly hoping that this could be a turning point in the season for us with a very successful test at Morgan Park.”

KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R

Do not attempt to imitate illustrated riding scenes. Always wear protective clothing and obey road traffic regulations. Overseas model illustrated. Illustrated motorcycle may vary in selected details from the production model. Illustration includes optional KTM Powerparts which are available at an additional cost.

Packed with gut-wrenching performance and evil looks, the new KTM Super Duke 1290 R is not for the faint hearted. If you think you have what it takes, challenge yourself to see what real power and precision feels like. The V-Twin power plant produces 177 hp and is the most powerful engine we have ever muscled into a street bike. The new KTM Super Duke 1290 R is one hell of a ride.

Waters Poised to Fight Back at the ‘Top End’ Media Release: May 13 2018 The competition has stepped up a gear according to Waters; “During the 2017 season, Suzuki raised the bar and everyone has had to step up. Now my rivals are even stronger this year. We have to put our heads down and our bums up to trying to turn the situation around. I’m a long way behind now, but I was further back last year and we managed to win. I’m not going to give up!”

Reigning YMI Superbike Champion, Josh Waters (Team Suzuki ECSTAR, GSX-R1000R) will return to Hidden Valley Raceway (NT) where he dominated last year in stellar fashion. Now the Suzuki rider will aim to replicate that success when the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK) returns to Darwin for Round 4 (June 28 – July 1). As it stands, Waters sits fourth in the standings, a considerable 42 points off Troy Herfoss (Penrite Honda, CBR1000SP). The champ also has yet to claim a victory in 2018, despite finishing on the podium consistently. A mechanical retirement didn’t help the situation either back at The Bend Motorsport Park (SA). The pressure is now on to make sure he gets back on the top step.

Luckily ASBK will return to the ‘Top End’ in Darwin where Waters has enjoyed enormous success in the past. “I love that circuit and I’m looking forward to riding the Suzuki in the heat of Darwin. I can’t go there thinking we dominated last year and it’s going to be a similar outcome. Everyone is going to be stronger. Fortunately, I love this circuit. In some ways, I think the heat plays to my advantage, coming from Mildura. The vibe and atmosphere at Darwin is great! It’s almost like we are going out on a holiday. The locals really get behind ASBK there and I’m looking forward to it as always.” When asked if four ASBK titles plays on his mind, he admitted it’s a driving force behind for this year. “Winning four championships would be awesome, as no one has ever achieved this in ASBK. We can’t lose focus however, last year we took a race by race approach and that ended up working well. For sure winning the title this year would be extremely special if we can pull it off. I will give it my all!” Waters finished.

“In some ways, we could count ourselves unlucky at times. We’ve always been up towards the front, but we haven’t managed to get a win yet,” According to Waters. “The season started off well with Pole Position at Phillip Island and three podiums. Wakefield Park is always a difficult track for me, but I was happy because I was so much more competitive there compared to last year. Tailem Bend ended up being a difficult weekend because we were trying new parts to try and improve the package. We also DNF’d while we were running in P2 with a mechanical failure. In the final race, I was almost catching the lead group, but had a near crash and ran off the track. After an up and down weekend in South Australia, we need to turn it around and fight back,” Waters said.

2018 YMF R3 Cup ramps up! Thanks to continued support from naming rights sponsor Yamaha Motor Finance, the entry-level R3 Cup race series is expanding for 2018. The YMF R3 Cup racers were able to showcase their talent at Wakefield Park for Round 2 and it was Zac Levy to take the round overall in an impressive display. The R3 Cup technical rules are now aligned with the Supersport 300 technical rules. This means that entrants will be able to enter more races with their YZF-R3s. Supersport 300 entrants on Yamaha R3s on all levels of riding ability are encouraged to cross enter to the R3 Cup to be in with a chance of winning a range of prize money.

Entrants will continue to be able to purchase a YZF-R3 plus race kit at a discounted price of $7900 RRP inc GST. Customers who already have an R3 can purchase the race kit separately and parts are available from Yamaha dealers and Race Center. The Race Center support program, as per the previous two years, continues to offer assistance to all 2018 YMF R3 Cup events by providing spares and technical support and to assist in bike setup. The YMF R3 Cup Prize Pool continues with a total of $22,000 cash incentives. Watch the fiercely contested series at these venues:

In addition to the top prizes for winning and placing, the R3 Cup also offers rookie, encouragement and a lady’s cash incentives in order to encourage grass roots participation.

GP JUniorS AUSTRALIA The second round of the 2018 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK) also features the GP Juniors Cup where competitors will ride the dynamic Yamaha R15 on Bridgestone Tyres. After a successful re-launch of the class in 2017, the GP Juniors Cup is set for another exciting year in 2018.

comprised of Yamaha R15 machines. All GP Juniors Cup bikes are completely standard with strict regulations to ensure they remain a level playing field with Bridgestone control tyres. The final category is for the younger brigade, of 9 to 11-year old’s who compete on 79cc two0stroke machines at alternate meetings of GP Juniors Australia. Over the past decade there is an impressive list of graduates including; current MotoGP racer and Grand Prix winner Jack Miller. 2015 Australian Superbike Champion, Mike Jones and Daniel Falzon who has won three Australian 600cc championships in consecutive years.

GP Juniors Australia is the evolution of the Motorcycle Road Racing Development Association or “MRRDA” as it was commonly referred. 2018 marks the 12th year of competition for the national series and while the name may have changed over the years, the philosophy is exactly the same; to create a structure and provide youngsters with an avenue to greatness. To be good at any sport one has to start at a young age. Road racing is no different. Young riders learn to take responsibility for their actions and show exceptional maturity as the nature of the sport requires a mature attitude and conduct at all times. They also learn about mechanic’s, physics and engineering, all benefits that will hold them in good stead for their entire life.

Others that have used junior road racing as a springboard include, Josh Hook (2011 Australian 125cc Champion), Jed Metcher (2011 European 600cc Superstock Champion), Troy Geunther (2016 Australian Supersport Champion). Other notables that have competed in junior road racing include rapid girl Tayla Relph, Tom Bramich (2015 Australian Moto3 Champion), Matt Barton, Ben Leonard, Locky Taylor, Callum Alderson and Matt Walters.

The GP Juniors Cup will join ASBK for Rounds 2, 5 and 6 of the 2018 Championship. GP Juniors Australia is split into four categories: ages 1216 years for an Australian Championship of up to 160cc four-strokes, 85cc two strokes and the GP Juniors Cup
