WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FEB 23 - 25, 2018
Welcome from MA
After a scorcher of a weekend in the ‘Top End’, we move now to sunny Southern Queensland for Round 5 of the 2018 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) presented by Motul Pirelli at Morgan Park Raceway. On behalf of Motorcycling Australia (MA) we welcome you to the fifth round of ASBK, where Morgan Park Raceway is set to showcase each rider’s fierce competitive edge and commitment to a perfect strategy. Following on from the heat of Round 4 where fitness was the greatest challenge in overcoming track temperatures reaching above 40 degrees, Round 5 should seek to push the mentality of all competitors as one mistake can cost you vital seconds. As Morgan Park Raceway is a reasonably quick circuit though turns seven to 10, strategy and corner sequencing will be the devil in the detail to prove who will come out on top leading into the final two rounds of ASBK 2018.
If you can’t make it to Morgan Park, don’t forget that Round 5 can be livestreamed via www.asbk.com.au and will also be televised on SBS and FoxSports. So, whether you’re at the track or on the couch, you can keep a finger on the pulse of all the action right from your TV, phone or tablet! I would like to take this opportunity to thank, on behalf of MA, our partners for their continuing support and commitment, without which this event would not be possible. Thank you also to the lifeblood of this sport, our volunteers, without whom the world would not turn. We at MA wish you a great weekend in sunny Southern Queensland where the action should keep you on the edge of your seat! Peter Doyle CEO Motorcycling Australia
WELCOME FROM YAMAHA MOTOR FINANCE On behalf of Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) and Yamaha Motor Insurance (YMI), welcome to the fifth round of the 2018 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) presented by Motul Pirelli at Morgan Park Raceway. Hidden Valley Raceway was a fantastic venue for round 4 of the ASBK championship. As the track temperatures soared past the high 40’s the riders put on an action packed show for thousands of fans at the track and viewing at home. Cru Halliday had another impressive weekend in Darwin taking pole and winning both races on his R6 giving him a 25-point lead in the Supersport competition. Troy Hefross also had an outstanding weekend, but the highlight has to be Troy Bayliss’ return to form, with the former world champion showing some of the class that took him to the very highest levels of our sport.

YMF is proud to be the naming rights sponsor for the ASBK series once again this year, and YMI as the sponsor of the Australian Superbike class. To everyone making the journey to Morgan Park this weekend, we hope you enjoy the fantastic racing of the 2018 Yamaha Motor Finance ASBK Championship! Brad Ryan Yamaha Financial Services

Getting Started: Racing

OUT OF PIT LANE
GETTING LICENCED
Starting racing isn’t so hard…
Every club has a secretary who looks after licencing and they will be more than happy to guide you through the process that includes an open book theory test. If you have a civil rider’s licence or have attended a suitably accredited riding school, that should be enough to satisfy the MA State Controlling Body otherwise you may have to undergo a practical riding test to make sure you know the clutch lever from the front brake lever.
The decision to take up road racing is as old as the sport of motorcycle racing. Most of us on [Knee Down] have made that decision with varied results… Chances are that you already own a bike that can be raced. These days there are classes for just about anything with two wheels regardless of age or performance level. That’s the first step out of the way.
PROTECTION JOIN IN The next thing to do is to join a club that includes people with a common interest or are located locally. Log on to Motorcycling Australia’s website (www.ma.org.au). MA are the sanctioning body for all motorcycle racing (other than drag racing) in Australia. On their website you’ll find a full list of clubs in your state or territory. While you’re on the MA site, download their excellent ‘Getting started in Motorcycle Sport’. Don’t be scared about checking out a few clubs before joining one. They’re all unique and finding the right one for you will make the transition to road racer much easier.
12
While we don’t like talking about it, people do fall off motorbikes on racetracks. MA requires all licence holders to have their own personal Ambulance subscription. We’d recommend that you have your own income protection and that it includes coverage for motorcycle racing. No one wants to use up all of their sickies and holidays recovering from an accident. Protection also includes your own riding gear. Starting from the top, you require a full-face helmet that is approved to AS1698, which is the Australian Standard for helmets for street use anyway. Alternatively, MA also recognises international standards so if your helmet does not have AS1698 you can check with MA that it is ok to use. A set of one-piece leathers that fit is the preferred way to cover the larger parts of your anatomy. Make sure they’re roomy enough for you to wear the mandatory back protector underneath, and a chest protector is recommended too. The best leather gloves you can afford will keep your digits intact if you’re sliding down the track and using your hands as brakes. There’s a huge variety of suitable boots on display at any decent-sized motorcycle shop. Take the time to find a pair that fit properly without being too tight. Tight boots will ruin your day very quickly.
GETTING YOUR BIKE READY If you’re not overly mechanically minded, don’t worry, your local bike shop should be able to check your bike over before you venture on track for the first time. A full service and tune-up now could save you from a big bill later. All racing classes have common rules to ensure bikes don’t fall apart or leak fluid on the track. Before you’re allowed on track at any race meeting, your bike will be inspected by a scrutineer. Don’t give them a hard time if they pull you up and point out something you’ve forgotten. The majority of them have been doing this for a long time and don’t want to see anybody get hurt due to an oversight. Full rules for your class are in the Manual of Motorcycle Sport available at www.moms.org.au. But keep in mind that bike preparation is very important and quite in-depth for racing. Like you, your bike needs controlled fluid retention.
the case with your bike, having shiny new parts is a waste if you are learning. You will inevitably test your riding gear. A lot. So go for an affordable compromise. Don’t buy the most expensive graphics on your lid if a plain white one is going to be cheaper, for example. But don’t skimp on quality…
YMF R3 Cup and GP Juniors cup Two Championships that are great starting points and avenues for younger and beginner racers, is the Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) R3 Cup and GP Juniors Cup.
TIPS FOR KEEPING COMFORTABLE Assuming you’re like the rest of us, you’ll be carting yourself and your bike to the track in a trailer, ute or van. There are a few things we’d advise you chuck in. These may sound obvious but people still forget. Grab an esky and fill it with ice bricks and bottles of cold water. You’ll be amazed at just how easy it is to dehydrate while racing on a hot day. Even though racetrack food has improved from the days of dodgy hamburgers and warm soft drinks, chuck snack-type things in the esky along with sandwiches. You’ll burn off a lot of calories in a day and replacing them with racetrack food could send you broke. Not all racetracks offer covered pit areas so some sort of shade device will make your day much more enjoyable. Don’t forget the sunscreen either. The most important thing to take with you is a sense of humour. On its own this could be the difference between a day best forgotten and one of the best experiences of your life. If you think you can’t afford to race think again. It costs the same to race as it does to maintain a road bike or a track day bike, and entry fees for club racing are around that of a ride day – but you get a lot more laps at many race meetings…
GET YOUR GEAR ON You need the best you can afford and then some more. Spend more on your gear than your bike if you have to but, like is
Costs involved in these classes are minimal so that getting started in road racing will be attractive to as many people as possible. This means riders can thrive and develop their road craft and race skills while on comparative machinery. Because Yamaha YMF R3 Cup riders utilise the same bike model in the form of the Yamaha YZF-R3, the YMF R3 Cup allows competitors to race on an even playing field that highlights and fosters talent as well as making it possible to purchase a race ready YMF-R3 to take on the rest of the field! The GP Juniors compete on Yamaha YMF-R15’s. The GP Juniors feature young racers going head to head while learning the fundamentals of racing. The next generation of road racing talent can emerge from this class. The GP Juniors Cup is a fantastic platform suited to entry level competition. The Yamaha R15’s handling and power delivery characteristics are predictable, dependable and reliable. The GP Juniors Cup provides an immense opportunity for young riders to develop and advance in their sport. With the full backing and support of well-established organisations, at an affordable price, as the rider’s hone their skills and progress, who knows where they will end up!
THE BIKE You’ll need to spend a bit of time here – all fluid retaining fasteners need to be lockwired, fairings need catch areas in the bellypan, you need a tether kill switch, brake callipers bolts need to be lockwired and you need good suspension, brakes and bodywork. You also need a bullet-proof engine because you are going to thrash it beyond any ride day or road level of thrash! No need to spend big. Start racing on an old bike that you can crash. A lot. Because you will…

CELEBRATING
OF SERVICE TO MOTORSPORT
1997 - 2018
YMF partner with ASBK for 2018 Motorcycling Australia (MA) are thrilled that long-term partner Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) will continue as the official naming rights partner of the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK) for a fourth consecutive year. The partnership doesn’t stop there, with Yamaha Motorcycle Insurance (YMI) once again being the naming rights sponsor for the YMI Superbike class and YMF again stepping up to brand the YMF R3 Cup. YMF’s partnership with the ASBK Championship is a massive boost for the season, and shows the Yamaha marque has confidence in the direction ASBK is heading. This collaboration, that incorporates one of the most respected manufacturers in the Australian motorcycle industry, just adds to the most anticipated season to date, with pulsating TV coverage, live streaming, near capacity grids and fierce competition. 2018 will be a huge year in ASBK for Yamaha Australia as its Factory Racing Team has expanded to three riders including; Wayne Maxwell and Daniel Falzon (Yamaha Racing Team, YZFR1M) in the YMI Superbike Class. Yamaha will also be debuting its brand new YZF-R6 in the hands of Cru Halliday (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R6) who will be gunning for the Supersport title on the bike’s debut year! Director, COO at Yamaha Motor Australia, Brad Ryan commented; “Our level of involvement with ASBK is very enjoyable and rewarding. What we have found over the years with our sponsorship is that year upon year the championship has continued to be philosophically focused on the same things
16
that we are, and that is primarily the growth of the industry and development of the sport. It is our view that if we invest in the sport, everyone will benefit. “We have believed for a long time, that as the only specialist finance and insurance company in the industry, we have to participate in motorcycle racing at a level quite different from everyone else, and that means putting in a greater level of support. “The growth of ASBK has been absolutely fantastic for everyone, including YMF and YMI. I think the job the ASBK Team have done is extraordinary and the championship has gone from strength to strength. It has continuously improved with the results now plain to see. “ASBK is part of an overall strategy for us at YMF and YMI and we are excited to continue our support of not just at the highest level (ASBK), but also down to the grass roots level as well,” Ryan finished. MA CEO, Peter Doyle shared his excitement for YMF and YMI’s commitment adding; “MA is thrilled to welcome back Yamaha Motor Finance to the ASBK for a fourth consecutive year. Both brands have enjoyed a positive and collaborative relationship, that has put the necessary steps in place for ASBK to thrive. “In 2017, we saw unprecedented levels of growth, not only of rider and team involvement, but fan and spectator involvement too. It is with YMF that 2018 is set to be one of the most incredible years of racing on record,” Doyle finished.
Steve Martin Looks Ahead to Morgan Park Battle Media Release: June 18 2018 6R) is another rider that knows the track well and will be sick of coming second to Cru. I’m super impressed with Max Croker (Mladin Racing, Suzuki GSX-R600) as well. The way that he is improving step by step and picking up podiums has really caught my eye. Mat Mladin has certainly been a positive influence on his racing and I’m sure he will collect a victory before the year is out.
The 2018 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK) is reaching ‘crunch time’ according to former World Endurance Champion, Steve Martin. Queensland’s Morgan Park has often been a crucial track in deciding the fate of champions and this year looks to be no different. Martin offers his opinion on what we can expect at one of the most popular rounds of the year. What were your thoughts after Troy Bayliss (Desmosport Ducati, 1299 Final Edition) took victory at Darwin? It was an awesome sight to see and one for the older guys to get excited about. I think he will definitely be a podium contender for the remaining rounds. The Ducati Panigale is very strong at Morgan Park in the past and Corey Turner managed to score a podium on that bike at the track last year. I really believe now that Bayliss is on a roll and I would bet on him being on the podium. Troy Herfoss (Penrite Honda, CBR1000SP) seems to be the man at the moment, can anyone stop him? Troy is always fast at Morgan Park and he was very dominant there a couple of years ago in 2016. The Honda seems to suit the track as well. The only issue I can see for Herfoss, is that he carries the pressure of being the championship leader. You have to ask yourself, when push comes to shove, will he risk the points lead to have a crack at more victories? It will be interesting to see his approach for the rest of the season. Guys like Wayne Maxwell (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R1M) really need to put pressure on him. Does Wayne Maxwell have to win at Morgan Park to stay in the hunt? Wayne is one of the most talented motorcycle racers in Australia, if not the world. For one reason or another, luck has not gone his way. Throughout the whole season, he’s shown glimpses of his brilliance, but also the odd mistake here and there. There is definitely a lot of weight on his shoulders. It’s coming to crunch time now, so it’s now or never for Wayne. He has finished second in multiple title fights, so he will be desperate to add to his 2013 championship. Cru Halliday (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R6) is smashing it in the Kawasaki Supersport Championship, what makes him such a strong force? Yamaha have really come to the fore this year in the middleweight class. The bike is brand new and Cru has adapted very well. He took a victory in the YMI Superbike class at Morgan Park last year, so he obviously goes well around that track. If he can win there on a Superbike it will be very difficult for the Kawasaki Supersport field to hold him down. Tom Toparis (Cube Racing, Kawasaki ZX-
Tom Bramich (YRT, Yamaha YZF-R3) is another rider in strong form, how impressed have you been by his year so far? The Australian Supersport 300 class is so competitive and it can quite often be any one of ten riders in contention every race for victory. For Bramich to hold a 28-point advantage and run consistently at the front shows you what a talent he is. Tommy also won the 2015 Moto 3 / 125GP Championship in convincing fashion. Seth Crump (Rock Oil, KTM RC 390) has also come on song insanely quick. When you consider that he hasn’t completed a full year of ASBK yet. He can already take it to the best of them and is a fast learner. His father and former Speedway GP Champion, Jason Crump works on the bike and it’s a great combination. For a family to come from a different discipline is super impressive. It was great to see him pick up a win at Darwin. Glenn Allerton (NextGen Motorsports, BMWS1000RR) has injured himself in a Motocross accident, can he still come back and make an impact in ASBK 2018? When I think of Glenn Allerton, there’s probably plenty of people that say that he should retire. It’s still possible to make an impact in your 30’s however, I went to Europe at a similar age and still managed to win a World Championship. If you look at Bayliss, he could still compete for another 15 years if he wanted to. It’s really down to him, if he wants to win again, I’m sure he could pull it off. In my opinion, he should not come back too early. We’ve seen him to return to competition too soon in the past and it hasn’t been good for him. I think it would be smart for him to sit out a couple of rounds and come back strong. Is the Championship heading towards a battle between Herfoss, Maxwell and Bayliss? It’s starting to look like those three are edging away in front. Herfoss seems to have it in hand, but as we’ve seen in other years, things can change in an instant. He now has more than a race win in hand, but all it takes is a mechanical failure or a crash for him to be reined in. He can’t count his chickens before they have hatched and when your leading the championship, you ride slightly more conservatively to maintain your lead. How would you describe the characteristics of the Morgan Park track? It’s certainly tight and twisty, but it flows as well for a very enjoyable track. The ones that get the good lap times can set up their bikes for the back-sector, where it flows fast left and right before you start to head up the hill. You can make up heaps of time there. If you get it wrong through that section, you can lose the front and mess up your entire weekend. What I like about Morgan Park is that it is very close to Warwick and the local community really gets behind ASBK. You can see a lot of the track from the spectator viewing points and you can get pretty close to the action.

round 4 review GET UP TO SPEED WITH ALL THE ACTION FROM ROUND 4 OF THE ASBK YMI Superbike Troy Herfoss (Penrite Honda Racing, Honda CBR1000SP) has proven to be the man to beat once again, taking the overall victory in the YMI superbike class at Round 4 of the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK) at Hidden Valley Raceway, Darwin. Herfoss took second in race one but took the win in race two after having a scintillating battle with Troy Bayliss (Desmosport Ducati, Ducati 1299 FE) in both races.
Herfoss pushed through the tough conditions and extended his championship lead; “That was epic, racing with Bayliss is something different, it was such a good battle, but we had similar pace all weekend just in different sectors of the track. A big congrats to my team and our sponsors I couldn’t have done this without them,” finished Herfoss. Sadly, for Bayliss after breaking through for his first ASBK victory, race two was going to plan until lap number 16 when he ran wide of the YMI corner and dropped to third position. The problems continued for Bayliss after running wide as he slipped back to seventh position but his pole position and race one win, was enough to grab him second overall. Bryan Staring (Kawasaki BCperformance, Kawasaki ZX-10R) enjoyed a consistent weekend taking out third overall with a third in race one and a second in race two, his best performance since taking out round one. Race One Bayliss takes out an ASBK YMI Superbike victory with a clinical display leading from start to finish at Hidden Valley Raceway and holding off a fast finishing Herfoss during an intense final lap in Darwin. Bayliss got a great jump in the restart after a red flag and started to put in a good gap between the field and himself, his lead got out to 0.8s before Staring and Herfoss slowly started to make ground on Bayliss after lap 11. Herfoss and Staring duked it out for second position, before Herfoss made the move down the 1.1km straight on lap 14 and set his sights on race leader Bayliss. The final lap was a battle with Bayliss making his Ducati as wide as possible as Herfoss looked for any opportunity to make the pass, but it would be the Three Time World Superbike Champion who would cross the line first and claim his first ASBK victory. Bayliss was thrilled to take out his first ASBK victory; “I owe that performance to my team, it was a big call to bring an old fella on board. A massive shout out to all our sponsors and the team for putting me on a bike this good. I feel pretty good and that was a tough and physical race but I’ll be giving it my all in race two this afternoon,” finished Bayliss.
22
Staring would settle for third after battling with Bayliss and Herfoss throughout the 16 laps, and Wayne Maxwell (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R1M) would finish in a lonely fourth position as he was just under six seconds behind Staring. Glenn Allerton (NextGen Motorsports, BMW S1000RR) put in a solid performance on his BMW and rounded out the top five finishing eight seconds off the pace of race winner Bayliss.
Daniel Falzon (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R1M), Josh Waters (Team Suzuki ECSTAR, GSX-R1000R) and Mark Chiodo (Team Suzuki ECSTAR, GSX-RR) would finish in sixth, seventh and eighth respectively in the warm Darwin conditions. Leading the way for the privateers was Arthur Sissis (SA Demolition & Salvage, Suzuki GSX-R1000R) who finished in ninth to show great speed and that effort will give him great confidence for race two. Race Two Herfoss takes the win, but it was a battle for the ages for the first 16 laps between Herfoss and Bayliss, with the pair pulling away from the field and duking it out for the lead. Bayliss was leading the race and looking solid with great speed. A mistake on lap 16 at the YMI corner let Herfoss through and he didn’t look back. With the mistake from Bayliss, Staring was able to get by as well and collect a well-deserved second place finish. Bayliss continued to have a tough time after his mishap and slipped down to seventh position, but Maxwell reaped the rewards and grabbed the last spot on the podium and grabbed valuable championship points. It was a drag to the line between Maxwell and his former teammate Allerton, but Allerton would have to settle for fourth. The defending YMI Superbike Champion, Waters rounded out the top five in what was a tough weekend for the Suzuki rider. Herfoss has now pushed his YMI Superbike Championship lead with 205.5 points, Maxwell maintains his spot in second with 176 points and Bayliss now moves into third position with 157 points.

Rees and the ever-impressing Zac Johnson (Rebuilder, Yamaha YZF-R6) completed the top five. With a short turnaround till the next Kawasaki Supersport race at 12:55pm. The pressure was on the rest of the field to take the fight to Halliday. Race Two Race two was another highlights reel for the almost unstoppable Halliday on the R6. Once again Halliday would not lead into the first corner, that honour would go to Croker. It wouldn’t take long however to make a quick pass on Croker on the main straight during lap two. Halliday would then proceed to break the competition and build a significant gap. The highlight of the race was the awesome battle between Toparis and Croker which would rage for the entire duration of the race. The duel showcased chopping and changing of positions on a consistent basis. Kawasaki Supersport There was plenty of pressure on the rest of the field to take the fight to Cru Halliday (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R6) but the Yamaha rider was simply too unstoppable in the Kawasaki Supersport class. Halliday managed to take both wins to extend his championship lead for the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship pretended by Motul Pirelli (ASBK). Race One Halliday has demolished the competition once again and is in an excellent vein of form. Despite not leading into turn one Halliday quickly managed to regain the lead from the fast-starting Max Croker (Mat Mladin Racing, Suzuki GSX-R600). The race then settled into a typical affair for this class with Halliday leading from Tom Toparis (Cube Racing, Kawasaki ZX-6R) and Croker. Damon Rees (Carl Cox M-sports, Honda CBR600) was also impressing in fourth position. Toparis and Croker in particular were duking it out. There was a moment with Croker getting the back end of his bike out, which had spectators on the edge of their seats. Lachlan Epis (ResponseRE, Kawasaki ZX-10R) was also impressing towards the front in the first two laps but crashed as he put too much load on the front tyre. A devastating result for his return to ASBK competition. Meanwhile at the front, Halliday was pumping fastest laps on a constant basis and quickly broke the competition. He would go on to win by over four seconds to his rival Toparis. Croker managed yet another third place on the Mat Mladin backed Suzuki.
Disaster would strike again for Epis as he had another shocker, crashing on lap 11. Another blow for the former WorldSSP rider. With Halliday taking a commanding victory by three seconds, Croker would take second and Toparis third. Only two tenths of a second would separate Croker and Toparis. Rees and Johnson would complete the top five. Cru Halliday; “This is a phenomenal result and I really wanted to win the past three rounds in a row. We struggled a bit here on the 1000 last year so to come away with the round win is a great result. I love Morgan Park and I love Winton so confidence is high. So happy to be leading the championship.” Max Croker; “We are over the moon to achieve second place in this race. The team are progressing all the time and I’m adapting well to the Suzuki. To have Mat Mladin behind me is awesome. Well done to the entire team.” Tom Toparis “The warm conditions were a big shock considering we have come from Goulburn but we got used to it as the weekend progressed. The last race was very tricky and Max rode very well to beat us to second. We have work to do before we arrive at Morgan Park. We are still in reach of the championship but we have to start winning some races like we did at the start of the year.” Halliday would take the overall round, followed by Croker and Toparis. As a result, Halliday leads the championship with 238 points, followed by Toparis with 213 and Rees with 143.

Australian Supersport 300 Seth Crump (Rock Oil, KTM RC 390), son of the legendary speedway rider Jason Crump, has taken the overall round win for Australian Supersport 300. The KTM rider took two victories on Sunday to catch the attention of the entire Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK) paddock. Meanwhile, Tom Bramich (YRT, Yamaha YZF-R3) has managed to extend his championship lead.
Zac was tough and I just held him off and it was great to take the win,” said Crump.
Race One Tom Bramich (YRT, Yamaha YZF-R3) has come from fourth on the grid to take out race one of the Australian Supersport 300 class at Hidden Valley Raceway. Bramich took the victory by just 0.13 seconds from Oli Bayliss (Cube Racing, Kawasaki Ninja 300) who started on pole, after qualifying fastest earlier in the day. The racing was chaotic with passes consistently throughout the race, but Bramich just got the better of Bayliss down the final straight.
Rounding out the top five was Harry Khouri (Acid racing, Yamaha YZF-R3), who put in a great performance around the 2.87km Hidden Valley Raceway circuit.
Bramich was thrilled to take the win despite not having the outright pace during qualifying, “You are never out of the game in this class and that is handy when you don’t have the outright pace, but I was really lucky to execute my plan. I tried to hold the field up in the slow corners and then get a really good exit out of the final corner and win the drag to the line, which I did but it probably won’t happen again,” said Bramich.
Race Three It was another exciting affair for the Australian Supersport 300 race three, as Crump completed the double victory on Sunday. The race could have been won by up to nine riders in the closing stages with the group separated by just over one second.
As usual in the Australian Supersport 300 it was a close affair with Olly Simpson (Simpson Crash, Yamaha YZF-R3) landing himself in third position but finishing just 0.65s off winner Bramich. In fourth position it was Seth Crump (Rock Oil, KTM RC390) who started the race from second position but just couldn’t make a move down the straight to land on the podium. Zac Levy (Puma RV’s, Yamaha YZF-R3) rounded out the top five and was in contention with the lead group as was Tayla Relph (Earmold Australia, Yamaha YZF-R3) who had to settle for sixth.
Race one winner Bramich would have to settle for third place after a slow start saw him have to play catch up. Simpson would be the unlucky one in the lead pack missing out on the podium despite only being 0.520s off the race win.
Locky Taylor (Shark Leathers, Yamaha YZF-R3) and Relph battled it out for sixth but it would be Taylor who got the better of the battle, but an impressive ride from one of the youngest riders in the Australian Supersport 300 Max Stauffer (Yamaha YZF-R3) saw him finish in eighth.
With a lap to go it seemed like the victory would go down to either Bramich or Bayliss, but it would be Crump to gain the ascendency in the final corners, as Bayliss was run wide. As he pulled onto the main straight, Crump knew he had the victory in hand as Bramich could not match the straight-line speed of the KTM. With Crump taking the victory, he was followed by Bramich in second, Levy in third followed by Bayliss and Simpson. Crump was ecstatic to claim his second victory of the weekend; “That was an awesome race and to win the round is even better. I have to thank Jamie Stauffer because he helped me with the setup of the bike after that last race with the sliding I was experiencing. Bramich was relived to extend his championship lead; “It has been a great round for us in the championship. Unfortunately, Oli had a crash in race two so I managed to pull a few points away from him. I’m really looking forward to Morgan Park Raceway. Levy saying after the race; “I just tried to ride the race as usual at hope for a last lap dash but we got held up in the hairpin out the back and Oli went around the outside of me and onto the grass. I then had to settle for third but I’m pretty happy with the result.
Race Two Crump fights off a fast finishing Levy, Bramich and Simpson to take his first win in the Australian Supersport 300 class at Hidden Valley Raceway for Round 4 of ASBK. Aboard his single cylinder KTM, Crump managed to hold off Levy down the final straight to take out race two. The start belonged to Bayliss who got off the line well, but a fall on lap three saw Bayliss out of the race. Crump took the ascendency from there on, but it would be Levy who made his pass for the lead on lap six and went to try a pull away. Crump didn’t waste much time to get the lead back, making the move back on Levy on lap seven. Crump couldn’t contain his excitement on the podium; “That was an awesome race, when Oli and I got away at the start, I felt my bike sliding but I just had to slow it down and keep it on two wheels. My battle with

Crump won the overall round, with Bramich and Levy in second and third. The current points standings have Bramich extend his advantage to 246 points followed by Levy on 218 and Khouri on 201.

GLENN SCOTT TO IMPRESS ON ASBK RETURN Media Release: July 17 2018 What were your expectations coming back to race in ASBK at Hidden Valley Raceway? I came into the weekend with no expectations. I really wanted to know where I stood in comparison to the rest of the riders. In the back of your mind, you want to be fighting for podiums but I had to be realistic about my injuries and how competitive the championship is at the moment. I managed to finish in the points, so in my mind that is a win and to finish the races was really important.
Former WorldSSP rider Glenn Scott (GSR Kawasaki, ZX-10R) made his return to the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK) at Darwin and made an immediate impact. After sustaining a major leg break that halted his overseas career, Scott now hopes to mix it with the major teams with his privateer Kawasaki outfit. We caught up with the talented rider to discuss his return to ASBK competition. First of all, why did you make the decision to come back to ASBK from overseas competition? It was a slightly unique situation that I would make my return halfway through the ASBK season. I was racing competitively in Europe, but had an ongoing leg injury from 2016. At the start of this year’s season, I had the discovery of a low-grade infection in my leg which would affect my performance. We had to get the issue sorted and it took quite some time for the leg to heal. That completely wrote off my chances of competing in Europe this year. With the ASBK Championship being as successful as it is lately, I put the feelers out there for support and Kawasaki Australia came back with a lot of interest for me to run my own setup. Now I am running my own privateer outfit with Kawasaki’s support for the second half of the season. This year will all be about finding our feet and reestablishing ourselves before a full season in 2019. It’s a competitive championship, so why not be part of it!
You managed 10th and 13th place finishes, happy with those results? The strategy in the first race was to finish no matter what. You obviously want to be aggressive in the opening laps, but we had to stay out of trouble and ease into the race. We ended up having a very successful race and came home with a top 10 finish. In my mind that was a fantastic way to start our campaign. To come home as the second fastest Kawasaki in the field was the cherry on top. The second race we came out with more aggression and put myself in a very good position, with a good start on the long straight. We had a first few good turns and managed as high as P9. Unfortunately, I got a bump in the rear from someone running hot, luckily we didn’t crash, but I ran off and the bike stalled. We managed to keep our momentum however and I managed to claw my way from last to 13th. That has to be considered another success. The next round is at Morgan Park Raceway, have you raced there before? Funnily enough, I have never raced there before, so this will be the first time for me. When I was racing in ASBK a few years ago, we did not race there. We have a few test days planned for me to familiarise myself with the joint. I’m sure I will love it and hopefully it can be another successful weekend to improve our development with our bike. What’s the goal for remainder of this year, heading in to a major assault on 2019? Coming halfway thought the season, there is obviously no way we can compete for the title. That ship has sailed but the main priority is to establish my team and the bike to get up to speed with the factory teams. Budget depending, I will try to show that I can be competitive and manage the team successfully. I want to show potential sponsors for the 2019 season that I can be competitive and mix it with the factory boys.
How much of a challenge is it to come back halfway through the season? It’s a significant challenge, let alone being nine months off the bike. It’s been a long road to recovery for me and establishing a new team is quite a task! Wearing caps for both team manager and rider is an interesting dynamic. Although I am very familiar with the ZX-10R, you have to find your feet with the new setup, learn the tracks again and compete against guys that have been racing in Australia for quite some time. I was racing against many of them in 2013 and several of them are in major teams now. They are comfortable and their teams are very competitive. How does your current setup compare to racing in WorldSSP? In 2015, I rode for a little Australian team called AARK Racing, which was certainly a privateer outfit. It was a very good season for me, finishing many races in the points. In 2016, I moved into a well-established satellite team. That was the stepping stone for taking the next step and I started off the season very competitively. Unfortunately, it all came crashing down when I broke my leg in Round 3. It was such a bad break that it completely wrote me off for the rest of the season.

KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R
Do not attempt to imitate illustrated riding scenes. Always wear protective clothing and obey road traffic regulations. Overseas model illustrated. Illustrated motorcycle may vary in selected details from the production model. Illustration includes optional KTM Powerparts which are available at an additional cost.
Packed with gut-wrenching performance and evil looks, the new KTM Super Duke 1290 R is not for the faint hearted. If you think you have what it takes, challenge yourself to see what real power and precision feels like. The V-Twin power plant produces 177 hp and is the most powerful engine we have ever muscled into a street bike. The new KTM Super Duke 1290 R is one hell of a ride.

tayla MADE FOR ASBK Media Release: July 26 2018 What would you say are your greatest strengths as a racer? Late braking and mid-corner speed are my greatest attributes. I am able to make overtakes stick with the strengths that I have. My weakness would have to be exit speeds out of corners. We do need to work on it, so we’re not entering the corners with too much speed. I know what we have to do to get on the podium, but it’s not so easy to change your style. My qualifying could also use improvement, to try to put us in a better position for the races. Do you have a rider coach or are you mostly self-taught? I don’t have a rider coach, probably the closest thing to that would be my dad who watches every race from the pit roof and tries to identify where I can improve. I also try to learn from riders such as Oli Simpson (Simpson Crash, Yamaha YZF-R3) and Tom Bramich (YRT, Yamaha YZF-R3), but I’m mostly self-taught when it comes to racing. Tayla Relph (Earmold Australia, Yamaha YZF-R3) is enjoying her best season yet in the Australian Supersport 300 Class and is hoping to claim a top five finish in the championship this year. With Round 5 Morgan Park Raceway quickly approaching, Relph will be looking to put on a show for her home crowd at the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK). You have your home round coming up at Morgan Park, how is your preparation going? We have completed some testing in anticipation for the round last week and got the bike dialled in. We had a few issues with the package back at Darwin and the test allowed us to iron out those problems. Hopefully we can perform there as well as our pace suggests from the test. Morgan Park always pulls a great crowd, so the atmosphere around the track should be great! Are you happy with how the year has progressed, despite an injury at Round 1? Round 1 at Phillip Island obviously wasn’t the best for us with a leg injury and a 16th overall finish. If it wasn’t for that disappointing round, we could have been much higher up in the championship. To be sitting in eighth however, has to be counted as a success and to overcome such a difficult start to the year. I would always like to be higher, but hopefully with consistent results, a top five in the championship may be possible.
What got you into the sport in the first place? At two and a half years old, my dad took me to a Crusty Demons race. I threw a tantrum on the floor and demanded that he said he would buy me a bike. I have now been racing for ten years and absolutely hooked on it! Where do you see your racing career in the future? Depending on our funds, I would like to head overseas again like last year. It would be great to get more international races under my belt, because you learn so much from those experiences. The ultimate dream is to compete in the WorldSSP 300 Championship but obviously financially its difficult. Last year, I got to race in India for the FIM Asia Cup of Road Race and that was an incredible experience. What do you get up to besides racing? I’ve got quite a full-on life at the moment. I’m currently working in child care from Tuesday to Friday and working as a wedding caterer over the weekends. I also study full time in University studying Journalism, plus my minors in Criminology. Training is also very full on! I make it work in the end and I’ll do whatever it takes to get out on track.
An up and down round at Hidden Valley? I was looking very strong during the opening days but unfortunately with the heat, it didn’t quite work out with the settings on my bike. Every single race we were losing out on power. I finished the last race in tenth and that was simply because I had no power left and I couldn’t keep up with the front runners down the main straight. I love the track however, with it being my first time racing there. What do you make of 300 racing at the moment? In my opinion, it’s one of the most exciting classes in the ASBK Championship. It always has produced the most thrilling racing on track because we can push our machines 100 percent to their limit. The class has been breaking multiple lap records at tracks, compared to previous years, so the competition is at an all-time high.
