WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FEB 23 - 25, 2018

Welcome from MA

Following on from excellent weekend up North at Morgan Park Raceway, we move to the cooler southern climate for the Spokes.com.au presents Round 6 Winton Motor Raceway of the 2018 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK). On behalf of Motorcycling Australia (MA), we would like to welcome you to Winton Motor Raceway. Winton Motor Raceway will play well into the hands of any rider fearless under brakes but most importantly, riders who also conserve the longevity of their tyres. Round 6 will no doubt get the adrenaline pumping as we find out whether Troy Herfoss will achieve four consecutive wins or whether he’ll be put under pressure by competitors. Winton Motor Raceway is geographically the flattest venue on the ASBK calendar and thanks to new resurfacing back in 2016 that provides vastly improved grip, riders have become increasing more confident as they arrive at Winton. But the additional abrasive surface has also increased tyre degradation and riders must remember to conserve their tyres whilst riding as fast and as smooth as possible, if they want any hope of dominating at this track.

Be sure to check out Turn Five to Eight, where you’ll see a combination of the only fast flowing left sweeper and right left switchbacks. Turns One, 10 and 11 all offer passing opportunities to those riders that are demons under breaks so keep your eyes peeled for all the excitement at each of these turns, where one wrong move could make or break a riders’ chance of leaving their mark on Winton Motor Raceway and 2018 ASBK! If you can’t make it to the track don’t forget that you can access all livestreaming via www.asbk.com.au or you can check out the televised edition of Round Six on SBS, Fox Sports and FoxSports Asia! So, no matter where you are in the world, you can keep a finger on the pulse of all things ASBK right from your smartphone, tablet or TV. I would like to take this time to thank, on behalf of MA, all our partners for their continuing support and commitment to the series, without which this event would not be possible. To everyone heading into Winton, we at MA wish you a great weekend full of action and adrenaline at Spokes.com.au presents Round 6 at Winton Motor Raceway!

Peter Doyle CEO Motorcycling Australia

WELCOME FROM YAMAHA MOTOR FINANCE On behalf of Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) and Yamaha Motor Insurance (YMI), welcome to the sixth round of the 2018 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) presented by Motul Pirelli at Winton Motor Raceway. Morgan Park raceway provided a tough challenge for all the riders during the fifth round of the ASBK championship and with the points being so close in the title fight the riders put on a great show for the fans on the track and viewing at home. Troy Hefross had another outstanding weekend taking pole and both race wins extending his lead in the championship. Herfoss now leads Maxwell by 44.5 points and with only 2 rounds left we are set to see a fantastic fight for the remaining title points. Cru Halliday also had another impressive weekend taking pole position and both race wins on his R6 and extending his lead in the Supersport Championship.

4

We are proud to share our passion and heritage for racing with everyone in the ASBK series again this year, this partnership is indicative of the direction and ethos of both YMF & YMI and the results from the first 5 rounds of the 2018 ASBK championship have shown that the ASBK series really is the best in the country. To everyone making the journey to Winton this weekend, we hope you enjoy the on track action for the penultimate stage of the ASBK championship! Michael Singh Yamaha Financial Services

AT PIRELLI WE BUILD MOTORCYCLE TYRES THAT TRANSFORM EVEN THE MOST DIFFICULT ROAD INTO RIDING NIRVANA.

We have a large range of track, road, sport, commuter and cruiser tyres to match your riding passions. Are you ready to take your ride to the next level?

Getting Started: Racing

Words: Jeff Ware

OUT OF PIT LANE

GETTING LICENCED

Starting racing isn’t so hard…

Every club has a secretary who looks after licencing and they will be more than happy to guide you through the process that includes an open book theory test. If you have a civil rider’s licence or have attended a suitably accredited riding school, that should be enough to satisfy the MA State Controlling Body otherwise you may have to undergo a practical riding test to make sure you know the clutch lever from the front brake lever.

The decision to take up road racing is as old as the sport of motorcycle racing. Most of us on [Knee Down] have made that decision with varied results… Chances are that you already own a bike that can be raced. These days there are classes for just about anything with two wheels regardless of age or performance level. That’s the first step out of the way.

PROTECTION JOIN IN The next thing to do is to join a club that includes people with a common interest or are located locally. Log on to Motorcycling Australia’s website (www.ma.org.au). MA are the sanctioning body for all motorcycle racing (other than drag racing) in Australia. On their website you’ll find a full list of clubs in your state or territory. While you’re on the MA site, download their excellent ‘Getting started in Motorcycle Sport’. Don’t be scared about checking out a few clubs before joining one. They’re all unique and finding the right one for you will make the transition to road racer much easier.

12

While we don’t like talking about it, people do fall off motorbikes on racetracks. MA requires all licence holders to have their own personal Ambulance subscription. We’d recommend that you have your own income protection and that it includes coverage for motorcycle racing. No one wants to use up all of their sickies and holidays recovering from an accident. Protection also includes your own riding gear. Starting from the top, you require a full-face helmet that is approved to AS1698, which is the Australian Standard for helmets for street use anyway. Alternatively, MA also recognises international standards so if your helmet does not have AS1698 you can check with MA that it is ok to use. A set of one-piece leathers that fit is the preferred way to cover the larger parts of your anatomy. Make sure they’re roomy enough for you to wear the mandatory back protector underneath, and a chest protector is recommended too. The best leather gloves you can afford will keep your digits intact if you’re sliding down the track and using your hands as brakes. There’s a huge variety of suitable boots on display at any decent-sized motorcycle shop. Take the time to find a pair that fit properly without being too tight. Tight boots will ruin your day very quickly.

GETTING YOUR BIKE READY If you’re not overly mechanically minded, don’t worry, your local bike shop should be able to check your bike over before you venture on track for the first time. A full service and tune-up now could save you from a big bill later. All racing classes have common rules to ensure bikes don’t fall apart or leak fluid on the track. Before you’re allowed on track at any race meeting, your bike will be inspected by a scrutineer. Don’t give them a hard time if they pull you up and point out something you’ve forgotten. The majority of them have been doing this for a long time and don’t want to see anybody get hurt due to an oversight. Full rules for your class are in the Manual of Motorcycle Sport available at www.moms.org.au. But keep in mind that bike preparation is very important and quite in-depth for racing. Like you, your bike needs controlled fluid retention.

the case with your bike, having shiny new parts is a waste if you are learning. You will inevitably test your riding gear. A lot. So go for an affordable compromise. Don’t buy the most expensive graphics on your lid if a plain white one is going to be cheaper, for example. But don’t skimp on quality…

YMF R3 Cup and GP Juniors cup Two Championships that are great starting points and avenues for younger and beginner racers, is the Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) R3 Cup and GP Juniors Cup.

TIPS FOR KEEPING COMFORTABLE Assuming you’re like the rest of us, you’ll be carting yourself and your bike to the track in a trailer, ute or van. There are a few things we’d advise you chuck in. These may sound obvious but people still forget. Grab an esky and fill it with ice bricks and bottles of cold water. You’ll be amazed at just how easy it is to dehydrate while racing on a hot day. Even though racetrack food has improved from the days of dodgy hamburgers and warm soft drinks, chuck snack-type things in the esky along with sandwiches. You’ll burn off a lot of calories in a day and replacing them with racetrack food could send you broke. Not all racetracks offer covered pit areas so some sort of shade device will make your day much more enjoyable. Don’t forget the sunscreen either. The most important thing to take with you is a sense of humour. On its own this could be the difference between a day best forgotten and one of the best experiences of your life. If you think you can’t afford to race think again. It costs the same to race as it does to maintain a road bike or a track day bike, and entry fees for club racing are around that of a ride day – but you get a lot more laps at many race meetings…

GET YOUR GEAR ON You need the best you can afford and then some more. Spend more on your gear than your bike if you have to but, like is

Costs involved in these classes are minimal so that getting started in road racing will be attractive to as many people as possible. This means riders can thrive and develop their road craft and race skills while on comparative machinery. Because Yamaha YMF R3 Cup riders utilise the same bike model in the form of the Yamaha YZF-R3, the YMF R3 Cup allows competitors to race on an even playing field that highlights and fosters talent as well as making it possible to purchase a race ready YMF-R3 to take on the rest of the field! The GP Juniors compete on Yamaha YMF-R15’s. The GP Juniors feature young racers going head to head while learning the fundamentals of racing. The next generation of road racing talent can emerge from this class. The GP Juniors Cup is a fantastic platform suited to entry level competition. The Yamaha R15’s handling and power delivery characteristics are predictable, dependable and reliable. The GP Juniors Cup provides an immense opportunity for young riders to develop and advance in their sport. With the full backing and support of well-established organisations, at an affordable price, as the rider’s hone their skills and progress, who knows where they will end up!

THE BIKE You’ll need to spend a bit of time here – all fluid retaining fasteners need to be lockwired, fairings need catch areas in the bellypan, you need a tether kill switch, brake callipers bolts need to be lockwired and you need good suspension, brakes and bodywork. You also need a bullet-proof engine because you are going to thrash it beyond any ride day or road level of thrash! No need to spend big. Start racing on an old bike that you can crash. A lot. Because you will…

CELEBRATING

OF SERVICE TO MOTORSPORT

1997 - 2018

YMF partner with ASBK for 2018 Motorcycling Australia (MA) are thrilled that long-term partner Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) will continue as the official naming rights partner of the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK) for a fourth consecutive year. The partnership doesn’t stop there, with Yamaha Motorcycle Insurance (YMI) once again being the naming rights sponsor for the YMI Superbike class and YMF again stepping up to brand the YMF R3 Cup. YMF’s partnership with the ASBK Championship is a massive boost for the season, and shows the Yamaha marque has confidence in the direction ASBK is heading. This collaboration, that incorporates one of the most respected manufacturers in the Australian motorcycle industry, just adds to the most anticipated season to date, with pulsating TV coverage, live streaming, near capacity grids and fierce competition. 2018 will be a huge year in ASBK for Yamaha Australia as its Factory Racing Team has expanded to three riders including; Wayne Maxwell and Daniel Falzon (Yamaha Racing Team, YZFR1M) in the YMI Superbike Class. Yamaha will also be debuting its brand new YZF-R6 in the hands of Cru Halliday (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R6) who will be gunning for the Supersport title on the bike’s debut year! Director, COO at Yamaha Motor Australia, Brad Ryan commented; “Our level of involvement with ASBK is very enjoyable and rewarding. What we have found over the years with our sponsorship is that year upon year the championship has continued to be philosophically focused on the same things

16

that we are, and that is primarily the growth of the industry and development of the sport. It is our view that if we invest in the sport, everyone will benefit. “We have believed for a long time, that as the only specialist finance and insurance company in the industry, we have to participate in motorcycle racing at a level quite different from everyone else, and that means putting in a greater level of support. “The growth of ASBK has been absolutely fantastic for everyone, including YMF and YMI. I think the job the ASBK Team have done is extraordinary and the championship has gone from strength to strength. It has continuously improved with the results now plain to see. “ASBK is part of an overall strategy for us at YMF and YMI and we are excited to continue our support of not just at the highest level (ASBK), but also down to the grass roots level as well,” Ryan finished. MA CEO, Peter Doyle shared his excitement for YMF and YMI’s commitment adding; “MA is thrilled to welcome back Yamaha Motor Finance to the ASBK for a fourth consecutive year. Both brands have enjoyed a positive and collaborative relationship, that has put the necessary steps in place for ASBK to thrive. “In 2017, we saw unprecedented levels of growth, not only of rider and team involvement, but fan and spectator involvement too. It is with YMF that 2018 is set to be one of the most incredible years of racing on record,” Doyle finished.

The ‘Wayne Train’ Ready to Strike Back at Winton Media Release:28 August 2018 After ‘The Bend’ has there been a slight drop off in performance? There is no real explanation. We haven’t got everything right and the others have improved. It’s easy to make excuses, but I have to look in the mirror and take some responsibility. The guys at Yamaha Racing Team have been working super hard to make improvements. We have a two-day private test at Winton coming up, so hopefully we can hit the ground running and take it from there. Wayne Maxwell (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R1M) knows that Winton will be a crucial chance to fight back in the 2018 title race. He will need to replicate the kind of form that saw him dominate the Victorian track last year within the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK). Winton is a track that holds great memories from last year, can you replicate that success this season? It’s a track where I have enjoyed several wins, including 2015 and 2017. A couple of years ago we lost a championship at this track but overall, it’s been kind to us. Obviously, we have to work very hard and make some improvements. At Morgan Park, we were a little closer than we have been in recent rounds. At Winton, we have to return to the front, where we belong. What is it about Winton that you enjoy? The flowing nature of the track is very enjoyable and you really have to link everything together for the perfect lap. My style is very precise, so it suits this circuit. I don’t particularly enjoy the point and shoot tracks, nor do they suit the Yamaha. The YZF-R1M prefers the fast and flowing corners. I really think we can mount a challenge at Winton and take the Championship down to the final round.

Do you still hold hope that if you win the majority of the remaining races, then you’re still a chance? Even if I win all the remaining races and Troy has a DNF, it will still be very tight. I’m just taking the approach to take it corner by corner and session by session. That’s all I can do. Hopefully if I put the work in, I can keep Herfoss honest. Bayliss has also been strong and we all know what Waters can do when he’s in form. It’s going to be an interesting end to the year, that’s for sure! Why do you think Troy Herfoss has been so strong this year? He’s always been strong and competitive. I don’t think any of that has changed. His team appear to have made an improvement with their package. Your bike needs to be perfect and when the level is as high as it is, if you haven’t got it quite right, it can be a struggle until you reach the next round. Will Yamaha try anything new with the YZF-R1M for the final rounds? We’ll try new things with the R1M for the final rounds, obviously it’s got some very advanced electronics and I think we have to take more advantage from that. We haven’t quite identified where we’ve been struggling the past couple of rounds. So that will be the priority during the test. It’s going to be a few big days of hard work, but the team are up for the challenge and so am I.

How would you sum up the 2018 season so far? Very frustrating. We have only had one DNF this season that came in the first race at Phillip Island. You take that out of the equation and the gap wouldn’t be as large to Herfoss. Even if I managed to finish that race and score a few points, it would have helped. At times, we have been very fast and other times off the pace. Hidden Valley was never going to be a great track for us, but I feel we could have been better at Morgan Park. Two third places is not a disaster, but we need to do better.

What’s it like to have a new crew chief for the 2018 season? It’s difficult to start a new relationship with a new crew chief and hard for them to understand immediately what you require. Once you build an understanding, they can tell immediately from your face, how bad a problem is or what I’m feeling. It’s almost like a marriage! So, it takes a bit of time to build that. We need develop the package together to take the championship down to the final round.

round 5 review GET UP TO SPEED WITH ALL THE ACTION FROM ROUND 5 OF THE ASBK

YMI Superbike

Troy Herfoss (Penrite Honda Racing, CBR1000SP) was simply untouchable at Morgan Park Raceway for Round 5 of the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK). Coming into the round as the YMI Superbike points leader, he was calculated and precise throughout the weekend, picking up two race wins, as well as starting from pole position.

but for us to come out on top of the battle and to get our sixth win of the season is better than I would have imagined,” finished Herfoss. Bayliss would have to settle for second, whilst behind the front two, Maxwell and Waters were battling it out for the last spot on the podium. It would be Maxwell who found the speed to book himself the last spot on the podium, whilst defending YMI Superbike Champion, Waters would settle for fourth. Rounding out the top five was Daniel Falzon (Yamaha Racing Team, YZFR1M) who put in a consistent race throughout the fourteen laps. A season best came from privateer Matt Walters (Swann Insurance Superbike, Kawasaki ZX-10R) who mixed it with the factory riders to claim sixth. Just behind Walters was the factory Kawasaki machine of Bryan Staring (Kawasaki BCperformance, ZX-10R) who battled with Falzon throughout the race, but faded late to collect seventh position.

Leading up to the weekend, it was always going to be the battle of Troy after practice on Friday, and it lived up to expectations. Troy Bayliss (Desmosport Ducati, 1299 FE) and Herfoss had two epic battles in both races, but it would be Herfoss getting both wins. “It was so much fun, having dream runs like this and I must thank the team for giving me a bike this good and so easy to ride. A big thank you to the team and I’m just so happy to take another round win and extend my championship lead,” said Herfoss. Josh Waters (Team Suzuki ECSTAR, GSX-R1000R) and Bayliss shared the same results here at Morgan Park both grabbing a second and a fourth. Waters takes out second overall for the weekend after a better finish in race two.

In his return to ASBK on a new bike, Corey Turner (Honda CBR RR SP) raced right back into the top ten and looked like he hadn’t missed a beat, grabbing eighth position. Another one of the privateer brigade, Alex Phillis (Phillis Racing, Suzuki GSX-RR) put in a great ride in the windy conditions to collect ninth, a solid top ten effort. Rounding out the top ten and one of his best race performance of the season was Ted Collins (NextGen Motorsports, BMW S RR).

Bayliss ended third but the speed he carried throughout the two races was captivating, breaking the race lap record during race two just showed he was on it this weekend. A pair of third place finishes left Wayne Maxwell (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R1M) fourth overall but missed second position for the weekend by just one point..

Race One

Bayliss takes out an ASBK YMI Superbike victory with a clinical display Herfoss continues his stellar 2018 season, taking the win in race one of the YMI Superbike class here at Morgan Park Raceway. Herfoss had a poor start but his battle with Bayliss from lap ten all the way to the line was epic. Herfoss made the move on Bayliss on lap 13, but the pair had been going at it from lap ten. It looked that Bayliss’s Ducati had more grunt down the straight and Herfoss was finding the most out of his Honda through the tight technical part of Morgan Park Raceway. Once Herfoss made the move for the lead, he took off to the chequered flag and claimed his sixth race win of the season. “Once again the fight with Troy is so much fun, we just have confidence in each other and he then leans in on me and I’m like don’t do that Troy,

22

Race Two

Herfoss is simply on another level in the YMI Superbike class as he makes it the perfect weekend at Morgan Park Raceway. A measured and calculated performance, Herfoss slipped to fourth off the line but he just made his ground slowly but surely throughout the 16-lap race. He made his move on Maxwell for third mid-race before setting his sights on Waters in second, the move was made on lap ten and he set his sight on Bayliss. The battle of Troy was enthralling with Bayliss making his bike as wide as possible, but on lap 13 Herfoss made the move and didn’t look back collecting race win number seven.

Waters bounced back this weekend after a tough past few rounds to be back on the podium, finishing in second after Bayliss ran wide on lap 15. Maxwell was also on the receiving end of good fortune when Bayliss ran wide, making his move onto the final spot on the podium. Bayliss would cross the line in fourth, but it was a weekend where the three-time World Superbike Champion had such great pace but just slowed towards the end of the race.

The battle for the remaining podium positions was much more intense with Toparis running wide and going back to eighth position. Croker was also having a difficult race, appearing to lack grip after half race distance. As a result, Halliday took a convincing win with a new lap record at Morgan Park, in front of the very impressive Rees in second and the returning Callum Spriggs (Yamaha YZF-R6) in third for an unexpected podium.

Falzon made it a pair of fifth place finishes here at Morgan Park Raceway but would be a little disappointed, he didn’t get to mix it with the lead group. Staring would have to settle for sixth a very similar performance to race one for the man in green. What a weekend it was for Walters, picking up seventh place in race two, a great effort after his sixth in race one leading the way for the privateers. Turner who didn’t look out of place at all after a miss the last few rounds, backed up his race one effort with another eighth place finish, showing plenty of promise on his Honda. Collins has had his best weekend since making the jump to the Superbike class, grabbing ninth place and giving himself great confidence for the remaining two rounds. Local rider Ryan Yanko (Bettapork, Ducati Panigale) will be over the moon, grabbing tenth in front of his home crowd.

Croker finished in fourth after challenging for the lead in the early stages, followed by Lachlan Epis (ResponseRE, Kawasaki ZX-6R) in fifth. Tom Toparis (Cube Racing, Kawasaki ZX-6R) finished in sixth after a very disappointing race and will rue having run wide. Broc Pearson (Yamaha Motors Australia, YZF-R6) finished in seventh, a great result after returning from injury.

Race Two

Halliday takes the second victory of the weekend for the Kawasaki Supersport class but he didn’t have it his own way this time. He was engaged in an enthralling battle with Toparis for the vast majority of the race but his strength in the latter stages claimed him the victory. Toparis battled hard like his life depended on it, but Cru was simply too good when it counted and won by 3.263s. His YZF-R6 looking like it was taking much tighter lines around the circuit. The two riders were a class above the chasing field. In a stark contrast to the first race, this one was much more spread out between the field.

Kawasaki Supersport

Halliday is on a charge in the Kawasaki Supersport class and has claimed two wins at Round 5 Morgan Park Raceway. As a result, he now enjoys a 41 points advantage ahead of Tom Toparis (Cube Racing, ZX-6R) in the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK).

Race One

The opening laps in race one were frantic, with Halliday maintaining the lead from the start. but it was quickly brought to a halt with a red flag after Giuseppe Scarcella (Kawasaki BCperformance (ZX-6R) crashed on the opening lap. The field had to regather themselves and start over again with the race reduced to 12 laps. Halliday didn’t get such a good start this time. With Damon Rees (Carl Cox M-sports, Honda CBR600RR) taking the lead after a fantastic launch, followed by Max Croker (Mat Mladin Mladin Racing, Suzuki GSX-R600), Toparis and Halliday in fourth. Although he didn’t get the best start, Halliday quickly made short work of his opposition and went back into the lead at the start of lap three.

24

Managing yet another podium place was Callum Spriggs (Yamaha YZF-R6). It has been fantastic to see him back in ASBK after a difficult season last year in the YMI Superbike class. Former WorldSSP rider Lachlan Epis finished in fifth and Broc Pearson (Yamaha Motors Australia, YZF-R6) capped off his successful return after injury with fifth place.

Halliday sharing; “Tyres were always going to play a big part in this race and when Tommy chose the softer option I thought to myself that If I could stay close then I could get him in the latter stages of the race. We tried that tyre before and we knew we went with the better option for the long run. Hats off to Tommy and big thanks to my Yamaha Racing Team. Toparis stated; “We had to try something after race one and we went with the softer compound tyre. In the end, it dropped off with about five laps to go. I think Cru knew our strategy and waited to make his move. We have to take risks now and see how close we can get. Looking forward to Winton now.

Taylor looked disappointed to miss out, but victories could come his way tomorrow; “It was unfortunate to miss out to Hunter with the drag to the line, but credit to all the boys fighting at the front. I had a strategy to try to stay in front and try to break Hunter’s slipstream to the line but we couldn’t pull it off.” Zac Ley continued his successful season in 2018 with a third-place finish, a further 1.143s off the victory. He commented how much he enjoyed the battle with the leaders up front and how physically tiring the race was.

Spriggs saying; “I haven’t ridden a Supersport bike in about two years and I was just looking to have fun this weekend. The goal was to get two podiums and I have managed to do so. I am so happy for my team, which is family based. I tried to stay with Cru and Tommy but they were too strong. The plan is also to be at the last round at Phillip Island. As a result of his clean sweep, Halliday leads the Kawasaki Supersport Championship with 289 points, ahead of Toparis with 248 and Rees in third with 178. With only two more rounds to go, Toparis will have to go all out for victories at the next round at Winton Motor Raceway.

Australian Supersport 300

Tom Bramich (JLT, Yamaha YZF-R3) has extended his championship lead in the Australian Supersport 300 class, after taking the overall victory at Morgan Park. With three different winners, this has been a weekend to remember in the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK).

Race One

Hunter Ford (YRD, Yamaha YZF-R3) has pulled off another sensational win in the Australian Supersport 300 class at Morgan Park Raceway. The result went down to the wire with a drag race to the finish with Locky Taylor (Shark Leathers, Yamaha YZF-R3). The captivating racing once again proving that this is one of the most exciting classes in the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK).

Recent standouts, Seth Crump (Rock Oil, KTM RC390) and Tom Bramich (JLT, Yamaha YZF-R3) finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Race Two

Seth Crump takes victory in an absolute thriller. The first race on Sunday was full of incidents which included a collision between Taylor and Ford which cut the race short on the penultimate lap with a red flag. The race was off to a flyer, with Harry Khouri’s (Excite Motorsports, YZF-R3) bike going airborne in the final turn. Luckily, he got to his feet shortly after. The fight at the front of the field was an absolute barnstormer with multiple overtakes on just about every corner. As the race reached the closing stages on the penultimate lap, the top eight was spread by only 1.397s and everyone was going all out for victory. Unfortunately, Taylor crashed and took out Ford underneath the bridge section of the track, at turn three. As a result of the crash a red flag came out, due to debris on the track. The results were called back to lap seven. Taylor would be disqualified for causing the red flag. Taking the victory with the callback was Crump, who is now one of ‘in form’ riders in the field. Coming in second was Bramich, followed by Ford who finished on the podium due to the results being reverted to the previous lap. Oli Bayliss (Cube Racing, Kawasaki Ninja) came in fourth, with Zac Levy (Puma RV’s, Yamaha YZF-R3) fifth, Tayla Relph (Earmold Australia, Yamaha YZF-R3) sixth and Travis Hall (Ricondi Road & Race, Yamaha YZF-R3) in seventh.

The battle at the front was mesmerising, with 1.5 seconds covering the top six as they crossed the finish line. Taylor appeared to have the advantage heading into the final lap, but Ford would come out on top at the finish line, by a mere .027s. Ford sharing after the race; “Locky had a gap on me and I thought, am I going to be able to pull this off? Luckily, I managed to drag race him to the finish line! To be honest, I didn’t have much of a strategy, it was all about adapting to the situation.”

26

Crump sharing after the victory; “Winning my first ASBK race in Darwin was special, but we have moved on here to try my best to get another. That was a very interesting race with the red flag situation. Big thanks to Garry McCoy for all his help in the last couple of days here at Morgan Park.”

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FEB 23 - 25, 2018

Race Three

With race two being such a thriller, the afternoon’s race had a lot to live up to. Luckily it managed to deliver upon the great exceptions. Taking the win was Bramich after a last lap tussle with Levy and Taylor for the podium placings. The race started off with Bayliss and Crump being imposed with 10 second penalties for jumping the start. This put them out of race victory contention from the get go. As the leaders crossed the finish line, they were spread out by only .884s amongst the top five. Taking the victory was Bramich, followed by Levy, Taylor, Ford and Stauffer. The result further extending Bramich’s hold on the Australian Supersport 300 championship. Bramich stating; “I’m really happy to get that win after a difficult weekend. At times, I was probably thinking too much about the championship. It was another super close 300 race and I’m stoked for the team and my sponsors.”

Zac Ley continued his successful season in 2018 with a third-place finish, a further 1.143s off the victory. He commented how much he enjoyed the battle with the leaders up front and how physically tiring the race was. Recent standouts, Seth Crump (Rock Oil, KTM RC390) and Tom Bramich (JLT, Yamaha YZF-R3) finished fourth and fifth respectively. Hunter Ford (YRD, Yamaha YZF-R3) has taken out the overall victory at Morgan Park Raceway for the YMF R3 Cup at Round 5 of the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK). Ford took out the first two races and a fifth in race three gave him the overall victory by just one point. Tom Bramich (JLT, Yamaha YZF-R3) was ever so consistent throughout his weekend, and even his victory in the final race just wasn’t enough to get him the overall win. It was a positive weekend for Bramich as he didn’t miss the podium and finished second overall.

It was a great result for Bramich who not only took the round victory but also extends his championship points lead. Not a bad result considering it was a difficult weekend at times for Bramich, who has been sensational this season.

Locky Taylor (Shark Leathers, Yamaha YZF-R3) started the weekend as the rider to beat in the YMF R3 Cup, grabbing pole position with a superb qualifying session. In the races it didn’t just quite come together in terms of wins, but in race three Taylor missed the win by just .003s. A consistent weekend handed him third overall here at Morgan Park Raceway.

YMF R3 Cup

Race Two

The battle at the front was mesmerising, with 1.5 seconds covering the top six as they crossed the finish line. Taylor appeared to have the advantage heading into the final lap, but Ford would come out on top at the finish line, by a mere .027s.

“Podium Hunter’ Ford has made it two from two in the YMF R3 Cup after making a last lap move to take the victory at Morgan Park Raceway. As expected the lead pack got up to as many as six riders battling it for the victory, but the last lap move from Ford on Bramich saw him take the win in a drag to the line. Bramich would have to settle for second despite leading for most of the race, but with racing so close the last lap makes it anybody’s race. Zac Levy (Puma RV’s, Yamaha YZF-R3) would take the final step on the podium, but it would be tough for Levy to cop as he was right in the mix throughout the race. The rider who started from pole position Taylor would have to settle for fourth position. Rounding out the top five was young gun Max Stauffer (Rock Oil, Yamaha YZF-R3), putting in his best performance of the season in the YMF R3 Cup class. Brother of the race two winner Zane Ford (YRD, Yamaha YZF-R3) would cross the line in sixth position. Unlucky was Tayla Relph (Earnold Aust, Yamaha YZF-R3) who was in the battle with the lead group, but a crash on the last lap ended her chances of a podium finish.

Race Three Ford sharing after the race; “Locky had a gap on me and I thought, am I going to be able to pull this off? Luckily, I managed to drag race him to the finish line! To be honest, I didn’t have much of a strategy, it was all about adapting to the situation.” Taylor looked disappointed to miss out, but victories could come his way tomorrow; “It was unfortunate to miss out to Hunter with the drag to the line, but credit to all the boys fighting at the front. I had a strategy to try to stay in front and try to break Hunter’s slipstream to the line but we couldn’t pull it off.”

28

The YMF R3 Cup saw an absolute classic, you couldn’t take your eyes off the track as a pack of five at the front swapped positions at every corner, but it would be Bramich who would win the drag to the line. Bramich at points of the races dropped to fifth, but he got the drive out of the final turn and put it all on the line as he was first to the chequered flag. Taylor who started from pole position had to settle for second by just .003 seconds, what a finish.

In third position, it was young gun Khouri who could have easily taken the win in what was the most exciting race of the day. Just missing the podium was Levy, and as funny as it might be to say he very easily could have taken the win, but fourth is what the number 87 had to settle for.

.075s off the win. Rounding out the top five was Glenn Nelson (Shark Leathers, Yamaha YZF-R15). Joel Kelso (JDS Moto, Yamaha YZF-R15) has taken the overall round victory here at Morgan Park Raceway for the GP Juniors Cup. It’s been fantastic to welcome him back to the ASBK paddock with his short stint back in Australia. Also taking victory this afternoon was John Lytras (Caboolture Yamaha, Yamaha YZF-R15).

Race Two

Taking victory for race two of the GP Juniors Cup at Morgan Park Raceway was Northern Territorian, Kelso who has returned from overseas competition. He managed to break away and take victory by 2.161s to his nearest competitor, using his pole position to great effect. The battle behind him was much more intense as they crossed the finish line. Ford who had won the first two races here at Morgan Park had to settle for fifth as he just couldn’t find the speed to drag with the pack to the line.

Lytras came second, race one winner, Max Stauffer (Rock Oil, Yamaha YZF-R15) third, Glenn Nelson fourth (Rock Oil, Yamaha YZF-R15) and Zylas Bunting (Shark Leathers, Yamaha YZF-R15) finished in a distant fifth.

Stauffer will leave Morgan Park Raceway with great confidence as he showed this weekend he can mix it with the best in the YMF R3 Cup as he finished in sixth position.

Young Harrison Voight (Voight Contracting, Yamaha YZF-R15) was an unfortunate non-finisher, retiring after four laps. Fastest lap of the race also went to Kelso, which was no surprise to see.

GP Juniors Cup

Race Three

Race One

Max Stauffer (Rock Oil, Yamaha YZF-R15) has taken out race one of the GP Juniors Cup at Round 5 of the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK).

Adding to the list of variety of winners for the GP Juniors Cup this weekend was John Lytras (Caboolture Yamaha, Yamaha YZF-R15) who won the race in a brilliant tactical display.

Stauffer started the race from fourth on the grid and battled his way from through the field to end up at the front of the pack. It was a dash for the line that saw Stauffer take the win by just over two tenths of a second. In his first race back in ASBK, Joel Kelso (JDS Moto, Yamaha YZF-R15) started the day from pole position after registering the fastest lap in qualifying. Kelso would have to settle for second place after he just couldn’t find the same speed as Stauffer to the line.

Kelso led the majority of the race but thought he would attempt being second leading onto the final straight this time, so he could get the slipstream behind Lytras. It didn’t quite work out as Lytras won ahead of Kelso (2nd), Stauffer (3rd), Nelson (4th) and Harrison Voight (5th) Only .841s covered the top four as they crossed the finish line.

Taking the final spot on the podium was Harrison Voight (Voight Contracting, Yamaha YZF-R15) who rode a consistent race and mixed it up with the front throughout the five-lap race. Just missing out on the podium was John Lytras (Caboolture Yamaha, Yamaha YZF-R15) and to show how close the racing was, Lytras was just

Kelso sharing; “It was a great race and I was leading most of it. I thought I would be better off being second heading onto the main straight because in race one, I got slipstreamed to the line. My plan didn’t quite work out as I couldn’t make my way past Lytras. I’m happy with the result however. It’s different racing here compared to Europe but it’s great to be back in the paddock for a while. The overall round winner was Kelso followed by Lytras and Stauffer. Leading the overall championship is Stauffer with 246 points, ahead of Lytras with 229 and Bunting with 95.

KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R

Do not attempt to imitate illustrated riding scenes. Always wear protective clothing and obey road traffic regulations. Overseas model illustrated. Illustrated motorcycle may vary in selected details from the production model. Illustration includes optional KTM Powerparts which are available at an additional cost.

Packed with gut-wrenching performance and evil looks, the new KTM Super Duke 1290 R is not for the faint hearted. If you think you have what it takes, challenge yourself to see what real power and precision feels like. The V-Twin power plant produces 177 hp and is the most powerful engine we have ever muscled into a street bike. The new KTM Super Duke 1290 R is one hell of a ride.

2018 YMF R3 Cup ramps up! Thanks to continued support from naming rights sponsor Yamaha Motor Finance, the entry-level R3 Cup race series is expanding for 2018. The YMF R3 Cup racers were able to showcase their talent at Morgan Park Raceway for Round 5 and it was Hunter Ford (YRD, Yamaha YZF-R3) to take the round overall in an impressive display. The R3 Cup technical rules are now aligned with the Supersport 300 technical rules. This means that entrants will be able to enter more races with their YZF-R3s. Supersport 300 entrants on Yamaha R3s on all levels of riding ability are encouraged to cross enter to the R3 Cup to be in with a chance of winning a range of prize money.

Entrants will continue to be able to purchase a YZF-R3 plus race kit at a discounted price of $7900 RRP inc GST. Customers who already have an R3 can purchase the race kit separately and parts are available from Yamaha dealers and Race Center. The Race Center support program, as per the previous two years, continues to offer assistance to all 2018 YMF R3 Cup events by providing spares and technical support and to assist in bike setup. The YMF R3 Cup Prize Pool continues with a total of $22,000 cash incentives. Watch the fiercely contested series at these venues:

In addition to the top prizes for winning and placing, the R3 Cup also offers rookie, encouragement and a lady’s cash incentives in order to encourage grass roots participation.
