Welcome from MA

We would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone attending Round Four at Hidden Valley Raceway for the 2017 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK). It has been a time of strong and significant growth for the Championship, with Round Three being broadcast on Free-To-Air television and Live Streaming to the world and our dedicated fans. We can happily say that the interest in the coverage was substantial and it’s fantastic to see ASBK generating great momentum. Round Three at Winton Motor Raceway featured thrilling races in all classes, and was a standout round for Wayne Maxwell and Ted Collins in particular. The ASBK has once again been assisted with phenomenal support from the manufactures and teams to deliver world class racing to our fans.

The action has been truly captivating and we can’t wait to witness what twists and turns are in store for the Championship. Once again, MA would like to take the time to thank our fans for their undying commitment and passion for the sport. It’s with your support that ensures this Championship enjoys the success it does today. I would also like to thank our sponsors for their commitment and unyielding support for the championship this year. The racing simply wouldn’t be able to exist without their assistance. MA bids everyone a safe and enjoyable event. Lets get racing! Peter Doyle CEO Motorcycling Australia

Getting Started: Racing

OUT OF PIT LANE

PROTECTION

Starting racing isn’t so hard…

While we don’t like talking about it, people do fall off motorbikes on racetracks. MA requires all licence holders to have their own personal Ambulance subscription. We’d recommend that you have your own income protection and that it includes coverage for motorcycle racing. No one wants to use up all of their sickies and holidays recovering from an accident. Protection also includes your own riding gear. Starting from the top, you require a full-face helmet that is approved to AS1698, which is the Australian Standard for helmets for street use anyway. Alternatively, MA also recognises international standards so if your helmet does not have AS1698 you can check with MA that it is ok to use. A set of one-piece leathers that fit is the preferred way to cover the larger parts of your anatomy. Make sure they’re roomy enough for you to wear the mandatory back protector underneath, and a chest protector is

The decision to take up road racing is as old as the sport of motorcycle racing. Most of us on [Knee Down] have made that decision with varied results… Chances are that you already own a bike that can be raced. These days there are classes for just about anything with two wheels regardless of age or performance level. That’s the first step out of the way.

JOIN IN The next thing to do is to join a club that includes people with a common interest or are located locally. Log on to Motorcycling Australia’s website (www.ma.org.au). MA are the sanctioning body for all motorcycle racing (other than drag racing) in Australia. On their website you’ll find a full list of clubs in your state or territory. While you’re on the MA site, download their excellent ‘Getting started in Motorcycle Sport’. Don’t be scared about checking out a few clubs before joining one. They’re all unique and finding the right one for you will make the transition to road racer much easier.

recommended too. The best leather gloves you can afford will keep your digits intact if you’re sliding down the track and using your hands as brakes. There’s a huge variety of suitable boots on display at any decent-sized motorcycle shop. Take the time to find a pair that fit properly without being too tight. Tight boots will ruin your day very quickly.

GETTING LICENCED Every club has a secretary who looks after licencing and they will be more than happy to guide you through the process that includes an open book theory test. If you have a civil rider’s licence or have attended a suitably accredited riding school, that should be enough to satisfy the MA State Controlling Body otherwise you may have to undergo a practical riding test to make sure you know the clutch lever from the front brake lever.

12

GETTING YOUR BIKE READY If you’re not overly mechanically minded, don’t worry, your local bike shop should be able to check your bike over before you venture on track for the first time. A full service and tune-up now could save you from a big bill later. All racing classes have common rules to ensure bikes don’t fall apart or leak fluid on the track. Before you’re allowed on track at any race meeting, your bike will be inspected by a scrutineer. Don’t give them a hard time if they pull you up and point out something you’ve

forgotten. The majority of them have been doing this for a long time and don’t want to see anybody get hurt due to an oversight. Full rules for your class are in the Manual of Motorcycle Sport available at www.moms.org.au. But keep in mind that bike preparation is very important and quite in-depth for racing. Like you, your bike needs controlled fluid retention.

TIPS FOR KEEPING COMFORTABLE Assuming you’re like the rest of us, you’ll be carting yourself and your bike to the track in a trailer, ute or van. There are a few things we’d advise you chuck in. These may sound obvious but people still forget. Grab an esky and fill it with ice bricks and bottles of cold water. You’ll be amazed at just how easy it is to dehydrate while racing on a hot day. Even though racetrack food has improved from the days of dodgy hamburgers and warm soft drinks, chuck snack-type things in the esky along with sandwiches. You’ll burn off a lot of calories in a day and replacing them with racetrack food could send you broke. Not all racetracks offer covered pit areas so some sort of shade device will make your day much more enjoyable. Don’t forget the sunscreen either. The most important thing to take with you is a sense of humour. On its own this could be the difference between a day best forgotten and one of the best experiences of your life. If you think you can’t afford to race think again. It costs the same to race as it does to maintain a road bike or a track day bike, and entry fees for club racing are around that of a ride day – but you get a lot more laps at many race meetings…

YMF R3 Cup and GP Juniors Two Championships that are great starting points and avenues for younger and beginner racers, is the Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) R3 Cup and GP Juniors. Costs involved in these classes are minimal so that getting started in road racing will be attractive to as many people as possible. This means riders can thrive and develop their road craft and race skills while on comparative machinery. Because Yamaha YMF R3 Cup riders utilise the same bike model in the form of the Yamaha YZF-R3, the YMF R3 Cup allows competitors to race on an even playing field that highlights and fosters talent as well as making it possible to purchase a race ready YMF-R3 to take on the rest of the field! The GP Juniors compete on Yamaha YMF-R15’s. The GP Juniors feature young racers going head to head while learning the fundamentals of racing. The next generation of road racing talent can emerge from this class. The GP Juniors Cup is a fantastic platform suited to entry level competition. The Yamaha R15’s handling and power delivery characteristics are predictable, dependable and reliable. The GP Juniors Cup provides an immense opportunity for young riders to develop and advance in their sport. With the full backing and support of well-established organisations, at an affordable price, as the rider’s hone their skills and progress, who knows where they will end up!

GET YOUR GEAR ON You need the best you can afford and then some more. Spend more on your gear than your bike if you have to but, like is the case with your bike, having shiny new parts is a waste if you are learning. You will inevitably test your riding gear. A lot. So go for an affordable compromise. Don’t buy the most expensive graphics on your lid if a plain white one is going to be cheaper, for example. But don’t skimp on quality…

THE BIKE You’ll need to spend a bit of time here – all fluid retaining fasteners need to be lockwired, fairings need catch areas in the bellypan, you need a tether kill switch, brake callipers bolts need to be lockwired and you need good suspension, brakes and bodywork. You also need a bullet-proof engine because you are going to thrash it beyond any ride day or road level of thrash! No need to spend big. Start racing on an old bike that you can crash. A lot. Because you will…

YMF partner with ASBK for 2017 Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) is once again one of the premier partners and supporters for the ASBK Championship in 2017. Yamaha Motorcycle Insurance (YMI) is the official naming right sponsor of the premier class, the ‘Yamaha Motorcycle Insurance Superbike Class’ YMF and YMI General Manager, Brad Ryan is pleased with the continued affiliation of both brands, commenting; “When we began this partnership in 2015 we intended on forming a long term partnership with a professional organisation. Motorcycling Australia (MA) and the ASBK organising team, haven’t let us down. That, along with the YMF expansion around the world, a new local brand and focus, and some fantastic results in our YMI Insurance business, meant it was an easy decision for us to jump on board again for 2017. “Taking a lead role in the World Superbike Championship (WSBK) reminded us of how fortunate we are to have such a strong and stable championship in Australia as the ASBK, and what incredible talent resides locally, both on and off the track. At the halfway mark of 2017, the Championship has showcased brilliant racing in all classes and we can’t wait to see who reigns supreme at the end of the season. “YMF isn’t just a finance company; it’s an industry participant. Through our finance and insurance arms, and through our sister brands Australian Motorcycle

Motorcycling Australia (MA) is extremely proud to carry the Yamaha Motor Finance name as official naming rights sponsor to the 2017 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli. MA CEO, Peter Doyle said; “We are thrilled to be working closely this year with Brad Ryan and the whole YMF team. MA ensures that they have the right safety gear, equipment, that accredited officials and first aid officers are on hand, so the kids can get a feel for riding under the right kind of supervision.

The initiative is supported by the ASBK manufacturers and sponsors and will be run by host clubs in conjunction with Motorcycling Australia, and is designed to give kids who are at the track, a taste of what it is like on-board a bike. It’s all about getting young kids involved!

Whether or not they take up the sport, ride at club, state or national level, or go on to become a World Champion, this is where it all starts for the next generation of riders.

Full safety gear and bikes will be provided, as well as a free day-licence so that the kids can have a go in a safe and controlled environment. MA has always been committed to bringing new people into the sport – especially kids, and the benefits of programs like this is that they get to try it out in a safe and controlled environment while also having a ball at having a go on a motorcycle!

The Spokes.com.au presents Round 3 at Winton Motor Raceway was one to remember for all six classes that made up the racing weekend. The combination of near capacity grids in just about each category, live television broadcasting, live streaming, crowd lined fences, vast media coverage and huge smiles under helmets, made a recipe for pure ASBK delight. YMI Superbike Class

Maxwell didn’t let up after passing Herfoss and set his fastest laps towards the end of the race, to highlight his domination and take his second victory of the weekend. Herfoss finished in second position, albeit five full seconds after the Yamaha. Halliday finished a further three seconds behind in third. Maxwell took the overall YMI Superbike Round win to get his Championship back on track with 51 points, ahead of Herfoss with 37 points.

Race One was a treat for race fans, who witnessed a fantastic ride by Wayne Maxwell (Yamaha Racing Team, Yamaha YZF-R1) winning on Pirelli tyres. Robbie Bugden (Kawasaki BCperformance, Kawasaki ZX-10R) charged through the field into second place. Cru Halliday (Yamaha Finance, Yamaha YZF-R1) was the final podium placer after his solid race that was full of thrills and battles after a red flag period caused a race restart as a result of a lap one incident. The second race once again displayed a master class from Maxwell. Despite once again losing the lead into turn one to Troy Herfoss, Maxwell’s pace towards the end was simply unmatchable for a clean sweep at Winton Motor Raceway. Herfoss in second place was unable to compete with the pace of Maxwell to finish second and third belonged to Halliday, once again.

Motul Supersport Race One was dominated by Ted Collins (NextGen Motorsports, Suzuki GSX-R) who once again proved his pace around Winton after the Suzuki mounted rider managed to pass the formidable Mark Chiodo (Repsol Gas Racing, Triumph 675 R) and cruised home to victory. Eventually, on lap two, Collins made his move and diced up the inside of Chiodo. As soon as Collins got a sniff of clean air with no traffic, he was unstoppable, even topping his own best qualifying time in Saturday’s qualifying session. Chiodo had a particularly slow last couple of laps and was nearly hunted down by Sam Lambert (Addicted to Track, Yamaha YZF-R6). Chiodo managed to hold on to second in front of Lambert. Collins eventually took the win in front of Chiodo.

26

When the lights turned green in Race Two, it was all business for Ted Collins, who again pulled away from the field, who all had a clean start. Sam Lambert was sitting in second with Mark Chiodo at his heels. The trio ever expanding their gap from the pack. The remainder of the feild begun to cross the line an incredible plus ten seconds (+10 sec) behind Lambert. In a fairy tale ending, 17 year old Collins took the Race 2 win, the second of the weekend. Overall Collins took the Round win on 51 points ahead of Chiodo’s 40.

The Hi-Tec Batteries Supersport 300 Race Two in the morning ensured entertaining racing by the ‘Up to’ and ‘Over’ 300cc riders. The first three competitors across the line were Max Croker, Zac Levy and Tom Bramich for the Over 300’s class. The first of the Under 300’s was Reid Battye. It was a race to remember for Croker and the results set the scene for an interesting Race Three. Race Three of the Hi-Tec Batteries Supersport 300 class was drama filled and action packed as riders of the ‘Up To’ and ‘Over’ 300cc machines fought for every inch of tarmac and every Championship point. It would be Bramich, Mahaffy and Levy to cross the finish line in first, second and third place in the ‘Over 300’ category, with the ‘Up To 300’ final order consisting of Battye, Nicholson and Shaw. Battye took the overall Round win for the Up to 300’s with 57.5 points while Bramich took the win for the Over 300’s with his 52 points. YMF R3 Cup

Hi-Tec Batteries Supersport 300 In the first race, class favourites Oli Bayliss (Cube Racing, Kawasaki EX300) and Max Croker (KTM Australia, KTM RC390) unfortunately went down on lap five, leaving the gate wide open for challengers to pick up points. Jack Mahaffy (JDS Moto, Yamaha R3) as an ‘Over 300’ rider was the winner of the Hi-Tec Batteries Supersport 300 Race One. Scott Nicholson (NextGen Motorsports, Kawasaki EX 300) couldn’t contain his excitement on the first place mat at the ‘Up To’ 300 podium.

Jack Mahaffy (JDS Moto, Yamaha YZF-R3), took the win in the first YMF R3 Cup race at Winton. Mahaffy took an impressive victory finishing 2.849 ahead of Corey Briffa (Alex Cudlin M-sports Yamaha YZF-R3). Rounding out the podium was Jack Passfield (Stay Upright Yamaha YZF-R3) who fought his way through the pack for an impressive third place. The all-conquering Jack Mahaffy won Race Two of the YMF R3 Cup class, followed by Hunter Ford (O Fox, Yamaha YZF-R3) and Jack Passfield close behind in third. Race Three was another master class from Jack Mahaffy who delivered the race victory yet again. The win marked a clean sweep from the young rider for The YMF R3 Cup races. As Mahaffy took the checkered flag it would be Ford in second and Tommy Edwards to finish the podium placings. Mahaffy’s dominant weekend allowed him to take the overall round win with 75 points ahead of Ford with 57 points.

Round 3 REVIEW GP Juniors Cup Race One of the The GP Juniors Cup engaged in a tight battle at the front, with the top four having an exciting duel. Tommy Edwards, Joel Kelso (JDS Moto Deborah Motorsports, Yamaha YZF-R15), John Lytras (Cabooture Yamaha, YZF-R-15 and Ben Baker (Yamaha, YZF-R15). Edwards managed to hold on to his advantage to win the race!

final lap and had to remount his bike. That allowed Tommy Edwards to fight his way to the front and take the win in front of Ben Baker and Joel Kelso to round out the podium positions. Edwards took the Round win with his 68 points in front of Kelso with 58 points. Australian Sidecar Championship During Race One, The first across the line for the F2 Sidecars class were Terry GOLDIE / Jamie CRASS (Suzuki LCR). The fastest of the F1 runners were fast men Jero JOYCE / Corey BLACKMAN (Rick Hanger Racing Kawasaki RHR) were delighted in their result by winning F1 class and outright for Race One.

Quite incredibly only a tenth of a second was between the top three at the line. Race Two of the GP Juniors once again featured a quartet of riders battling at the front. As the riders took off from the start line, Tommy Edwards went into the lead. It wasn’t before long that he came under pressure from the other riders. As the top four broke away Tommy Edwards, Joel Kelso, John Lytras, Ben Baker were all engaged in a monumental scrap. As result of the count back John Lytras took the win as the race leader on lap three. Joel Kelso took second place, while lap five leader Tommy Edwards was relegated back to third place. Once again it would be a battle between Edwards, Kelso, Lytras and Baker in Race Three. Eventually John Lytras took the lead on lap four and looked on course for a potential victory. Unfortunately for John Lytras he crashed on the

28

For Race two the fastest lap was achieved on lap four, by Howard Ford/Lee Menzies (Suzuki LCR) stopping the clock at 1:31.924. Ford/Menzies did not ease off their pace, cruising home to victory with Joyce/ Blackman (Rick Hanger Racing, Kawasaki RHR), only 0.576 seconds behind. In the highly competitive race three, the front running outfits saw a very exciting battle for the podium. The top three finishing order was Ford/ Menzies (F1) Joyce/Blackman (F1) Goldie /Crass (F2). Howard Ford and Lee Menzies were the overall Round victors with 68 points, ahead of Joyce and Blackman with 68 points.

GP JUniorS AUSTRALIA The second round of this year’s Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship supported by Motul Pirelli also features the first round of an all new class in GP Juniors Australia, with the introduction of the GP Juniors Cup where competitors will ride the dynamic Yamaha R15 on Bridgestone tyres.

R15 machines. All GP Junior Cup bikes are completely standard with strict regulations to ensure they remain a level playing field with Bridgestone control tyres. The final category is for the younger brigade, of 9-11 year old’s who compete on 70cc two-stroke machines at alternate meetings of GP Juniors Australia. Over the past decade, there is an impressive list of graduates have emerged from junior road racing programs, including current MotoGP racer and Grand Prix winner, Jack Miller.

GP Juniors Australia is the evolution of the Motorcycle Road Racing Development Association or “MRRDA” as it was commonly referred.

2015 Australian Superbike Champion, Mike Jones and Daniel Falzon who has won three Australian 600cc championships in consecutive years, as well as his latest crowning glory, domination of the opening round of the Australian Superbike Championship at Phillip Island claiming pole position and backing it up with three race wins.

2017 marks the 11th year of competition for the national series and while the name may have changed, the philosophy is exactly the same; to create a structure and provide youngsters with an avenue to greatness. To be good at any sport one has to start at a young age. Road racing is no different. Young riders learn to take responsibility for their actions and show exceptional maturity as the nature of the sport requires a mature attitude and conduct at all times. They also learn about mechanic’s, physics and engineering, all benefits that will hold them in good stead for their entire life.

GP Juniors Australia is split into four categories: ages 1216 years for an Australian Championship of up to 160cc four-strokes, 85cc two strokes and while making it’s debut in 2017, the GP Juniors Cup comprised of only Yamaha

Others that have used junior road racing as a springboard include, Josh Hook (2011 Australian 125cc Champion), Jed Metcher (2011 European 600cc Superstock Champion), Troy Geunther (2016 Australian Supersport 600cc Champion). Other notables that have competed in junior road racing include rapid girl Tayla Relph, Tom Bramich (2015 Australian Moto3 Champion), Matt Barton, Ben Leonard, Locky Taylor, Callum Alderson and Matt Walters. The first of seven rounds for the year starting this weekend, the GP Juniors Cup will continue unearthing future road racing champions. We are sure you are going to witness the next generation of Australian champions learning their craft. So, have your little black book ready to jot down some new names for future racing reference!
