Welcome from MA

Motorcycling Australia would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone attending Round 5 at Morgan Park Raceway (QLD) for the 2017 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK). It has been a time of strong growth for the championship with Round 4 being broadcast on Free-To-Air television and Live Streaming to the world and our dedicated fans. We can happily say that the interest in the coverage was significant and it’s fantastic to see ASBK generating significant momentum. Round 4 Hidden Valley Raceway was an exciting return for the championship back to Darwin. After a several years of absence from the Northern Territory, the locals were very excited to have us back. Josh Water’s riding was very impressive and he will deservedly take all the plaudits for two great wins. The ASBK has once again has been assisted with phenomenal support from the manufacturers and teams to deliver world class racing to our fans.

The action has truly been captivating and we can’t wait to witness what twists and turns lie in store for the championship. Once again I would like to take the time to thank our fans for their undying commitment and passion for the sport. It’s with your support that makes this championship the success it is enjoying today. I would also like to thank our sponsors for their commitment and unyielding support for the championship this year. The racing simply wouldn’t be able to exist without their assistance. Morgan Park Raceway is always one of our best-attended races all year and hopefully that trend continues in 2017. I’m looking forward to seeing which riders come out on top. MA as a whole bids everyone a safe and enjoyable event. Lets get racing! Peter Doyle CEO Motorcycling Australia

PROTECTION

Starting racing isn’t so hard…

While we don’t like talking about it, people do fall off motorbikes on racetracks. MA requires all licence holders to have their own personal Ambulance subscription. We’d recommend that you have your own income protection and that it includes coverage for motorcycle racing. No one wants to use up all of their sickies and holidays recovering from an accident. Protection also includes your own riding gear. Starting from the top, you require a full-face helmet that is approved to AS1698, which is the Australian Standard for helmets for street use anyway. Alternatively, MA also recognises international standards so if your helmet does not have AS1698 you can check with MA that it is ok to use. A set of one-piece leathers that fit is the preferred way to cover the larger parts of your anatomy. Make sure they’re roomy enough for you to wear the mandatory back protector underneath, and a chest protector is

The decision to take up road racing is as old as the sport of motorcycle racing. Most of us on [Knee Down] have made that decision with varied results… Chances are that you already own a bike that can be raced. These days there are classes for just about anything with two wheels regardless of age or performance level. That’s the first step out of the way.

JOIN IN The next thing to do is to join a club that includes people with a common interest or are located locally. Log on to Motorcycling Australia’s website (www.ma.org.au). MA are the sanctioning body for all motorcycle racing (other than drag racing) in Australia. On their website you’ll find a full list of clubs in your state or territory. While you’re on the MA site, download their excellent ‘Getting started in Motorcycle Sport’. Don’t be scared about checking out a few clubs before joining one. They’re all unique and finding the right one for you will make the transition to road racer much easier.

recommended too. The best leather gloves you can afford will keep your digits intact if you’re sliding down the track and using your hands as brakes. There’s a huge variety of suitable boots on display at any decent-sized motorcycle shop. Take the time to find a pair that fit properly without being too tight. Tight boots will ruin your day very quickly.

GETTING LICENCED Every club has a secretary who looks after licencing and they will be more than happy to guide you through the process that includes an open book theory test. If you have a civil rider’s licence or have attended a suitably accredited riding school, that should be enough to satisfy the MA State Controlling Body otherwise you may have to undergo a practical riding test to make sure you know the clutch lever from the front brake lever.

12

GETTING YOUR BIKE READY If you’re not overly mechanically minded, don’t worry, your local bike shop should be able to check your bike over before you venture on track for the first time. A full service and tune-up now could save you from a big bill later. All racing classes have common rules to ensure bikes don’t fall apart or leak fluid on the track. Before you’re allowed on track at any race meeting, your bike will be inspected by a scrutineer. Don’t give them a hard time if they pull you up and point out something you’ve

forgotten. The majority of them have been doing this for a long time and don’t want to see anybody get hurt due to an oversight. Full rules for your class are in the Manual of Motorcycle Sport available at www.moms.org.au. But keep in mind that bike preparation is very important and quite in-depth for racing. Like you, your bike needs controlled fluid retention.

TIPS FOR KEEPING COMFORTABLE Assuming you’re like the rest of us, you’ll be carting yourself and your bike to the track in a trailer, ute or van. There are a few things we’d advise you chuck in. These may sound obvious but people still forget. Grab an esky and fill it with ice bricks and bottles of cold water. You’ll be amazed at just how easy it is to dehydrate while racing on a hot day. Even though racetrack food has improved from the days of dodgy hamburgers and warm soft drinks, chuck snack-type things in the esky along with sandwiches. You’ll burn off a lot of calories in a day and replacing them with racetrack food could send you broke. Not all racetracks offer covered pit areas so some sort of shade device will make your day much more enjoyable. Don’t forget the sunscreen either. The most important thing to take with you is a sense of humour. On its own this could be the difference between a day best forgotten and one of the best experiences of your life. If you think you can’t afford to race think again. It costs the same to race as it does to maintain a road bike or a track day bike, and entry fees for club racing are around that of a ride day – but you get a lot more laps at many race meetings…

YMF R3 Cup and GP Juniors Two Championships that are great starting points and avenues for younger and beginner racers, is the Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) R3 Cup and GP Juniors. Costs involved in these classes are minimal so that getting started in road racing will be attractive to as many people as possible. This means riders can thrive and develop their road craft and race skills while on comparative machinery. Because Yamaha YMF R3 Cup riders utilise the same bike model in the form of the Yamaha YZF-R3, the YMF R3 Cup allows competitors to race on an even playing field that highlights and fosters talent as well as making it possible to purchase a race ready YMF-R3 to take on the rest of the field! The GP Juniors compete on Yamaha YMF-R15’s. The GP Juniors feature young racers going head to head while learning the fundamentals of racing. The next generation of road racing talent can emerge from this class. The GP Juniors Cup is a fantastic platform suited to entry level competition. The Yamaha R15’s handling and power delivery characteristics are predictable, dependable and reliable. The GP Juniors Cup provides an immense opportunity for young riders to develop and advance in their sport. With the full backing and support of well-established organisations, at an affordable price, as the rider’s hone their skills and progress, who knows where they will end up!

GET YOUR GEAR ON You need the best you can afford and then some more. Spend more on your gear than your bike if you have to but, like is the case with your bike, having shiny new parts is a waste if you are learning. You will inevitably test your riding gear. A lot. So go for an affordable compromise. Don’t buy the most expensive graphics on your lid if a plain white one is going to be cheaper, for example. But don’t skimp on quality…

THE BIKE You’ll need to spend a bit of time here – all fluid retaining fasteners need to be lockwired, fairings need catch areas in the bellypan, you need a tether kill switch, brake callipers bolts need to be lockwired and you need good suspension, brakes and bodywork. You also need a bullet-proof engine because you are going to thrash it beyond any ride day or road level of thrash! No need to spend big. Start racing on an old bike that you can crash. A lot. Because you will…

Motorcycling Australia (MA) and the ASBK organising team, haven’t let us down. That, along with the YMF expansion around the world, a new local brand and focus, and some fantastic results in our YMI Insurance business, meant it was an easy decision for us to jump on board again for 2017. “Taking a lead role in the World Superbike Championship (WSBK) reminded us of how fortunate we are to have such a strong and stable championship in Australia as the ASBK, and what incredible talent resides locally, both on and off the track. At the halfway mark of 2017, the Championship has showcased brilliant racing in all classes and we can’t wait to see who reigns supreme at the end of the season. “YMF isn’t just a finance company; it’s an industry participant. ASBK MINI MOTO HOME OF PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE CHAMPIONS! Thanks to Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda and Thor, each round of the 2017 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli, will feature a fun and safe Mini Moto area for kids.

MA ensures that they have the right safety gear, equipment, that accredited officials and first aid officers are on hand, so the kids can get a feel for riding under the right kind of supervision.

The initiative is supported by the ASBK manufacturers and sponsors and will be run by host clubs in conjunction with Motorcycling Australia, and is designed to give kids who are at the track, a taste of what it is like on-board a bike. It’s all about getting young kids involved!

Whether or not they take up the sport, ride at club, state or national level, or go on to become a World Champion, this is where it all starts for the next generation of riders.

Full safety gear and bikes will be provided, as well as a free day-licence so that the kids can have a go in a safe and controlled environment. MA has always been committed to bringing new people into the sport – especially kids, and the benefits of programs like this is that they get to try it out in a safe and controlled environment while also having a ball at having a go on a motorcycle!

20

So if you are a kid and you are at the racetrack on the weekend, make sure you drag Mum or Dad to the Mini Moto area and have a go! It’s all about having fun and trying it out! And if you are taking your kids to check out the action – make sure you give them a first hand taste of what it is like to turn that throttle at the ASBK Mini Moto!

Round 4 REVIEW GET UP TO SPEED WITH ALL THE ACTION FROM ROUND 4 OF THE ASBK

Round 4 at Hidden Valley Raceway was one to remember for all five classes that made up the racing weekend. Darwin’s heat and humidity was a battle for some competitors and for others, it was the fierce competition in the near capacity grids in just about every category.

back up the field until a racing incident with Kyle Buckley (Kawasaki BC performance, ZX-10R) on Pirelli corner on lap seven. The incident caused a red flag period and a restart. Wayne Maxwell (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R1) was gifted a handy advantage in the eight lap restart, sitting in P4.

The Northern Territory welcomed the triumphant return of ASBK, coupled with live television broadcasting, live streaming, crowd lined fences, vast print media coverage and huge smiles under helmets, made a recipe for pure ASBK delight for race fans everywhere. YMI Superbike Josh Waters (Team Suzuki ECSTAR, GSXR-1000R) sensationally achieved the double victory in two action packed races. In an incredible YMI Superbike Race One at Hidden Valley Raceway, Daniel Falzon (JD Racing, YZF-R1) took off from pole position to quickly lead into turn one.

However, it was Waters, Herfoss and Maxwell that took Race One podium honours in a thrilling race that had the crowds whipped into frenzy. Waters was elated, as it was the first 2017 ASBK race win for the newly formed Team Suzuki ECSTAR team. The second race once again was a master class showcase by Waters after the field all got off the line in a clean start. It was Waters, Herfoss and Staring to lead the pack from lap two of the 17-lap circulation, and it stayed that way for the duration. Yamaha Racing Team’s Maxwell had a spectacular crash at

The turning point of the race was on lap six, when Falzon lost the front end and ran off-road on the YMF hairpin at turn six, giving Waters the lead he needed. Falzon managed to remount and join the field. Falzon was a man possessed, clawing his way

Pirelli corner (turn five), connecting with his bike, but managing to walk back to the pits from the infield. But the story of the day belonged to Waters, who was a man on a mission. Waters managed to continuously pull a significant gap in front of the Crankt Protein Honda Racing Team riders and deservedly claimed the win. Motul Supersport Tom Toparis and Ted Collins achieved Race One and Two wins at Round 4 Hidden Valley Raceway within the tightly contested Motul Supersport class. Toparis (Cube Racing, Kawasaki ZX6R) took the Race One victory despite coming under plenty of pressure for the duration of the entire race. Collins (NextGen Motorsports, Suzuki GSX-R600) rode brilliantly to second position after his great start, piling on plenty of pressure on Toparis. Damon Rees (Tony Rees Motorcycles, Honda CB600RR) would be the final podium place getter.

The battle would rage until the last lap, with Chiodo crashing at turn 14 due to the pressure for the podium. Rees would take his place on the podium after Lambert’s penalty. Collins took a sensational win in Motul Supersport Race Two, after a brilliant start to set him up for the victory. Toparis would take second place while local Darwin rider Mick Hefferan (Quack Pest Control, Kawasaki ZX6R) would take a surprise podium. Chiodo was an early faller, with a high-speed crash on Lap Three. Toparis suffered a disappointing start and was on the back foot, however made his way through the field at an incredible rate. Toparis managed to fight his way all the way back to second place and was on a mission to hunt Collins down for another win.

The Cube Racing rider, Toparis managed to take the lead after a brilliant start into turn one. Pole position getter Mark Chiodo (Repsol Gas Racing, Triumph 675R) didn’t take off well from his prime real estate gird position and fell back to fifth. Toparis was incredibly strong on the brakes, particularly at YMF hairpin. Toparis nearly lost the front at Hi-Tec Batteries corner on Lap 12. That was the moment, which cost him the chance for a clean sweep this weekend. After the near crash, it put Coote right on Toparis’ tail.

Toparis was chased by Collins but managed to keep the NextGen Motorsports rider at bay. Behind the lead duo was a tough fight for the final place on the podium between Chiodo, Sam Lambert (Addicted to Track, Yamaha YZF-R6) and Damon Rees (Tony Rees Motorcycles, Honda CBR600RR).

After Collins crossed the line for victory, Coote attempted an overtake in the last corner but unfortunately for Coote, he crashed after a nasty high-side. The crash handed the final podium position to Hefferan.

Round 4 REVIEW Hi-Tec Batteries Supersport 300 class Race One got off to a clean start on favourable track conditions. The good fortune was not to last, when a red flag was brought out after seven laps due to a crash at turn one involving four riders. Results were counted back to end of the last completed lap (lap 6 of 10) and the race declared. Edwards adapted to the track quickly and brilliantly, finishing first in class for the ‘Over 300’s’, ahead Tom Bramich (Ron Angel Classic Racing, Yamaha YZFR3). Max Croker (KTM Australia, KTM RC 390) was third in class.

Oli Bayliss (Cube Racing, Kawasaki EX 300) again proved to be a force on the Ninja 300 as he went about blitzing the ‘Up to 300’s’ class. Yanni Shaw (BCperformance Junior Team, Kawasaki EX 300) took second place, over the cool, calm and collected Reid Battye (DB Racing Kawasaki EX 300) in third. Billy Van Eerde (KTM Australia, KTM RC-390) led into turn one in what would eventuate into an exciting race in Race Two. In the final laps, Tommy Edwards (Alpinestars, Yamaha YZF-R3), Jack Mahaffy (JDS Moto, Yamaha YZF- R3) and Tom Bramich (Ron Angel Classic Racing, Yamaha YZF- R3) found themselves breaking away from the field and fighting for the podium win.

28

Mahaffy adapted to the track quickly and brilliantly, finishing first for the ‘Over 300’s’ ahead of fellow counterpart Edwards, Bramich was third in class rounding out the podium for Race One of the category. Pole sitter Bayliss was the fastest ‘Up to’ 300’s class rider on track. Reid Battye (BCperformance Junior Team, Kawasaki EX 300) took second place in the ‘Up To’ 300 class over up and coming rider Drew Sells (DB Racing Kawasaki EX 300) in third. This time in Race Three, it would be Edwards who would get the hole shot into turn one. After a few exciting opening laps, a battle began to escalate between Bayliss, Edwards and Max Croker (KTM Australia, KTM RC-390). Croker unfortunately got tangled up in an incident with another rider, leaving him to not be able to challenge for the podium placing’s. That left Bayliss, Edwards, Mahaffy and Bramich to duke it out to the finish. Of the four, Jack Mahaffy would cross the line in first but would later be penalised to drop two positions for incidents during the race. That elevated Bayliss as the overall race winner and best of the ‘Under 300’s . Tommy Edwards was the top ‘Over 300’s’ finishers. MOTO 3 / 125GP Ten Moto3/ 125GP riders took off from the start line for Race One, it was Joel Kelso (Deborah Motorsports, Honda NSFR250) to dominate in class for victory. Kelso managed to build a four and a half second gap to his nearest opposition. Dylan Whiteside (Aussie Crane Trucks, Honda NSFR250) was Kelso’s greatest challenger in second position. Dallas Skeer (Penrite Oils, Honda NSFR250) was consistent on the tarmac and was the final

podium placer. Fourth and fifth place getters were Scott Topping (GDR, Honda NSFR250) and Ross Taylor (GDR, Honda NSFR250). Darwin local, Joel Kelso (Deborah Motorsports, Honda NSFR250) fittingly took the Race Two win at his home circuit in front of his family, friends and fans. His domination started from the very beginning of circulation, getting the hole-shot into turn one. He managed to lead the entire 10-lap race duration. Victorian rising star, Dylan Whiteside (Aussie Crane Trucks, Honda NSFR250) was once again a threat. This time however, Whiteside managed to finish three and a half seconds behind Kelso, down on the four and a half from the previous race. 15-year-old South Australian Dallas Skeer (Penrite Oils, Honda NSFR250) would round out the final podium positions in third. Ross Taylor (GDR, Honda NSFR250) and Scott Topping (B-spoke Design, Honda RS125) would finish a distant fourth and fifth from the leaders.

Kelso would be the overall round winner with 76 points, ahead of Whiteside with 60 and Skeer with 54. Motorsports NT Club Challenge Race One was dominated by Matt Edwards (Triumph Daytona 675R), as he finished approximately nine seconds in front of his closest challenger Douglas Clark (Suzuki GSXR 1000). Race Two for the Motorsports NT Club Challenge was won by Clark, after managing to finish just in front of Warwick Price (Yamaha YZF-R6). This would be Clark’s first ever race win and he was very pleased to finally stand on the number one podium matt. Queenslander Edwards on bike 122 would re-enact a carbon copy of Race One as he took victory on his Triumph 675 in the final race for the Challenge. The race winner would cross the line with a gap over 9.4 seconds. The victory meant Edwards had two out of three wins for the weekend.

The race was all about Kelso on his number 66 bike, and he will deservedly take all the plaudits for a welldeserved race victory. Kelso also managed to set the fastest lap time of the race. Whiteside managed to keep Kelso honest at times reeling him in, but the front man’s pace was still far too strong. Peter McFarlane (Honda RS 125) would experience an unfortunate high-side after an excursion into the grass in the closing few laps. Kelso again came out the victor, making Race Three a clean sweep for the weekend after leading from start to finish. Whiteside appeared to be able to run with Kelso in the opening laps but Kelso once again quickly put the hammer down and disappeared out of sight, winning by over three and a half seconds. Kelso gave a salute to the camera after his race victory and was very pleased with his weekend’s work within the class. The Deborah Motorsports rider, Kelso incredibly set a lap record in class in each of the three races. Skeer finished in third once again to round rout the podium places.

2017 YMF R3 Cup After an extremely successful debut season for the Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) R3 Cup in 2016, YMA (Yamaha Motor Australia) is pleased to announce the YMF R3 Cup return in 2017 with the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK). Already boasting a successful race weekend at Wakefield Park in Round Two of the ASBK, the YMF R3 Cup fills the demand for a low cost entry-level championship that delivers ‘bang for buck’ racing. A prize pool has also been announced giving more enticement to join the category. The YMF R3 Cup is aimed at entry-level road racers and junior MX, short circuit and dirt track riders. YMA is subsidising the cost of the race-kitted bikes in order to assist riders wanting a low cost, hassle free introduction road racing. Just $7,900 buys a Yamaha YZF-R3 in road trim with the addition of a full race kit, which gives the option to return the bike into road going form if desired. The race kit consists of: • Fairing kit – including front fender and tank cover – uses stock screen – black gelcoat • Akrapovic full racing exhaust system with Ti muffler • Racing rear sets with multiple adjustments • Handlebar lowering kit • Gearing set JT – optional sizes – 1 front, 2 rear • Complete rear shock absorber with adjustable preload, ride height and rebound damping. Front fork kit with springs, spacers and shim stack • Graphics kit with all series and bonus sponsors logos supplied • R+G protection kit including – crash knobs, engine case covers, rear stand pickups, chain guard, radiator protector • R+G muffler mounting bracket • AIS pollution system block off plate • Yamalube Service kit – 4 litres of synthetic engine oil and engine oilfilter • Oxford rear race stand • CD with parts book, service manual, kit fitment manual, etc.

To make it even easier to join in, the customer may purchase the racing YZF-R3 using YMF finance. With the package price of $7900 the repayment amount over a 12 month term would be $168 per week or over a 24 month term $88 - both rounded numbers. To be eligible for the YMF Championship - as well as the considerable prize and contingency packages that will be on offer, four of the five rounds need to be competed. Riders must also display series logos and wear a Yamaha Racing patch on their leathers to be eligible for the prize pool payments. Due to the YMF R3 Cup being a showcase for new riders, all ‘A’ graders, international riders and pro level racers are not eligible to win any prizes – although they are welcome to race in the series. “YMA encourages the YMF R3 Cup to be an entry level competition, with the emphasis on the enjoyment of riding and competing on equal and cost effective machinery. The championship is designed to introduce new riders to the sport and so help build a more solid future for Australian road racing,” says Ray Howard, Yamaha Motorsports Manager. GP JUniorS AUSTRALIA The second round of this year’s Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship supported by Motul Pirelli also features the first round of an all new class in GP Juniors Australia, with the introduction of the GP Juniors Cup where competitors will ride the dynamic Yamaha R15 on Bridgestone tyres.

R15 machines. All GP Junior Cup bikes are completely standard with strict regulations to ensure they remain a level playing field with Bridgestone control tyres. The final category is for the younger brigade, of 9-11 year old’s who compete on 70cc two-stroke machines at alternate meetings of GP Juniors Australia. Over the past decade, there is an impressive list of graduates have emerged from junior road racing programs, including current MotoGP racer and Grand Prix winner, Jack Miller.

GP Juniors Australia is the evolution of the Motorcycle Road Racing Development Association or “MRRDA” as it was commonly referred.

2015 Australian Superbike Champion, Mike Jones and Daniel Falzon who has won three Australian 600cc championships in consecutive years, as well as his latest crowning glory, domination of the opening round of the Australian Superbike Championship at Phillip Island claiming pole position and backing it up with three race wins.

2017 marks the 11th year of competition for the national series and while the name may have changed, the philosophy is exactly the same; to create a structure and provide youngsters with an avenue to greatness. To be good at any sport one has to start at a young age. Road racing is no different. Young riders learn to take responsibility for their actions and show exceptional maturity as the nature of the sport requires a mature attitude and conduct at all times. They also learn about mechanic’s, physics and engineering, all benefits that will hold them in good stead for their entire life.

GP Juniors Australia is split into four categories: ages 1216 years for an Australian Championship of up to 160cc four-strokes, 85cc two strokes and while making it’s debut in 2017, the GP Juniors Cup comprised of only Yamaha

Others that have used junior road racing as a springboard include, Josh Hook (2011 Australian 125cc Champion), Jed Metcher (2011 European 600cc Superstock Champion), Troy Geunther (2016 Australian Supersport 600cc Champion). Other notables that have competed in junior road racing include rapid girl Tayla Relph, Tom Bramich (2015 Australian Moto3 Champion), Matt Barton, Ben Leonard, Locky Taylor, Callum Alderson and Matt Walters. The first of seven rounds for the year starting this weekend, the GP Juniors Cup will continue unearthing future road racing champions. We are sure you are going to witness the next generation of Australian champions learning their craft. So, have your little black book ready to jot down some new names for future racing reference!
