Welcome from MA
Motorcycling Australia (MA) would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone attending Round 6 at Sydney Motorsport Park (NSW) for the 2017 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK). It has been a time of strong growth for the championship with Round 5 being broadcast on Free-To-Air television and Live Streaming to the world and our dedicated fans. We can happily say that the interest in the coverage was significant and it’s fantastic to see ASBK generating significant momentum. Round 5 Morgan Park Raceway was an exciting round for the Championship with wins to Yamaha riders, Wayne Maxwell and Cru Halliday. With Troy Herfoss crashing out in Race One, the points are incredibly close between the top three. With only two rounds remaining it could truly be anyone’s game. The ASBK has once again has been assisted with phenomenal support from manufacturers and teams to deliver world class racing to our fans.
The action has truly been captivating and we can’t wait to witness what twists and turns lie in store for the championship. Once again we would like to take the time to thank our fans for their undying commitment and passion for the sport. It’s with your support that makes this Championship the success it is enjoying today. We would also like to thank our sponsors for their commitment and unyielding support for the Championship this year. The racing simply wouldn’t be able to exist without their assistance. Sydney Motorsport Park simply won’t be one to miss and we are looking forward to seeing which riders come out on top. MA bids everyone a safe and enjoyable event. Remember to always, Ride. Race. Enjoy! Peter Doyle CEO Motorcycling Australia
WELCOME FROM YAMAHA MOTOR FINANCE On behalf of Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) and Yamaha Motor Insurance (YMI), we welcome you to Sydney Motorsport Park in Eastern Creek for the sixth round of the 2017 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) presented by Motul Pirelli. Morgan Park raceway provided a great setting for round 5 of the ASBK championship, and with the points being so close in the title fight the riders put on a great show for the fans on the track and viewing at home. Yamaha dominated the YMI Superbike class to win both races, Wayne Maxwell took a sensational Race One victory after storming through the pack and privateer Cru Halliday took the win in race 2 after taking pole position in qualifying.

PROTECTION
Starting racing isn’t so hard…
While we don’t like talking about it, people do fall off motorbikes on racetracks. MA requires all licence holders to have their own personal Ambulance subscription. We’d recommend that you have your own income protection and that it includes coverage for motorcycle racing. No one wants to use up all of their sickies and holidays recovering from an accident. Protection also includes your own riding gear. Starting from the top, you require a full-face helmet that is approved to AS1698, which is the Australian Standard for helmets for street use anyway. Alternatively, MA also recognises international standards so if your helmet does not have AS1698 you can check with MA that it is ok to use. A set of one-piece leathers that fit is the preferred way to cover the larger parts of your anatomy. Make sure they’re roomy enough for you to wear the mandatory back protector underneath, and a chest protector is
The decision to take up road racing is as old as the sport of motorcycle racing. Most of us on [Knee Down] have made that decision with varied results… Chances are that you already own a bike that can be raced. These days there are classes for just about anything with two wheels regardless of age or performance level. That’s the first step out of the way.
JOIN IN The next thing to do is to join a club that includes people with a common interest or are located locally. Log on to Motorcycling Australia’s website (www.ma.org.au). MA are the sanctioning body for all motorcycle racing (other than drag racing) in Australia. On their website you’ll find a full list of clubs in your state or territory. While you’re on the MA site, download their excellent ‘Getting started in Motorcycle Sport’. Don’t be scared about checking out a few clubs before joining one. They’re all unique and finding the right one for you will make the transition to road racer much easier.
recommended too. The best leather gloves you can afford will keep your digits intact if you’re sliding down the track and using your hands as brakes. There’s a huge variety of suitable boots on display at any decent-sized motorcycle shop. Take the time to find a pair that fit properly without being too tight. Tight boots will ruin your day very quickly.
GETTING LICENCED Every club has a secretary who looks after licencing and they will be more than happy to guide you through the process that includes an open book theory test. If you have a civil rider’s licence or have attended a suitably accredited riding school, that should be enough to satisfy the MA State Controlling Body otherwise you may have to undergo a practical riding test to make sure you know the clutch lever from the front brake lever.
12
GETTING YOUR BIKE READY If you’re not overly mechanically minded, don’t worry, your local bike shop should be able to check your bike over before you venture on track for the first time. A full service and tune-up now could save you from a big bill later. All racing classes have common rules to ensure bikes don’t fall apart or leak fluid on the track. Before you’re allowed on track at any race meeting, your bike will be inspected by a scrutineer. Don’t give them a hard time if they pull you up and point out something you’ve
forgotten. The majority of them have been doing this for a long time and don’t want to see anybody get hurt due to an oversight. Full rules for your class are in the Manual of Motorcycle Sport available at www.moms.org.au. But keep in mind that bike preparation is very important and quite in-depth for racing. Like you, your bike needs controlled fluid retention.
TIPS FOR KEEPING COMFORTABLE Assuming you’re like the rest of us, you’ll be carting yourself and your bike to the track in a trailer, ute or van. There are a few things we’d advise you chuck in. These may sound obvious but people still forget. Grab an esky and fill it with ice bricks and bottles of cold water. You’ll be amazed at just how easy it is to dehydrate while racing on a hot day. Even though racetrack food has improved from the days of dodgy hamburgers and warm soft drinks, chuck snack-type things in the esky along with sandwiches. You’ll burn off a lot of calories in a day and replacing them with racetrack food could send you broke. Not all racetracks offer covered pit areas so some sort of shade device will make your day much more enjoyable. Don’t forget the sunscreen either. The most important thing to take with you is a sense of humour. On its own this could be the difference between a day best forgotten and one of the best experiences of your life. If you think you can’t afford to race think again. It costs the same to race as it does to maintain a road bike or a track day bike, and entry fees for club racing are around that of a ride day – but you get a lot more laps at many race meetings…
YMF R3 Cup and GP Juniors Two Championships that are great starting points and avenues for younger and beginner racers, is the Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) R3 Cup and GP Juniors. Costs involved in these classes are minimal so that getting started in road racing will be attractive to as many people as possible. This means riders can thrive and develop their road craft and race skills while on comparative machinery. Because Yamaha YMF R3 Cup riders utilise the same bike model in the form of the Yamaha YZF-R3, the YMF R3 Cup allows competitors to race on an even playing field that highlights and fosters talent as well as making it possible to purchase a race ready YMF-R3 to take on the rest of the field! The GP Juniors compete on Yamaha YMF-R15’s. The GP Juniors feature young racers going head to head while learning the fundamentals of racing. The next generation of road racing talent can emerge from this class. The GP Juniors Cup is a fantastic platform suited to entry level competition. The Yamaha R15’s handling and power delivery characteristics are predictable, dependable and reliable. The GP Juniors Cup provides an immense opportunity for young riders to develop and advance in their sport. With the full backing and support of well-established organisations, at an affordable price, as the rider’s hone their skills and progress, who knows where they will end up!
GET YOUR GEAR ON You need the best you can afford and then some more. Spend more on your gear than your bike if you have to but, like is the case with your bike, having shiny new parts is a waste if you are learning. You will inevitably test your riding gear. A lot. So go for an affordable compromise. Don’t buy the most expensive graphics on your lid if a plain white one is going to be cheaper, for example. But don’t skimp on quality…
THE BIKE You’ll need to spend a bit of time here – all fluid retaining fasteners need to be lockwired, fairings need catch areas in the bellypan, you need a tether kill switch, brake callipers bolts need to be lockwired and you need good suspension, brakes and bodywork. You also need a bullet-proof engine because you are going to thrash it beyond any ride day or road level of thrash! No need to spend big. Start racing on an old bike that you can crash. A lot. Because you will…

Round 5 REVIEW GET UP TO SPEED WITH ALL THE ACTION FROM ROUND 5 OF THE ASBK
YMI Superbike Yamaha dominated the YMI Superbike class to win both races at Round 5 Morgan Park Raceway (QLD) for the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK). Wayne Maxwell (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R1) winning Race One and Cru Halliday (Yamaha Finance, YZF-R1) Race Two on their Yamaha YZF-R1’s.
In a riveting YMI Superbike Race One, Maxwell took a sensational Race One victory after storming through the pack. Troy Herfoss (Crankt Protein Honda Racing Team, CBR1000SP2) crashed with ten laps to go, blowing the Championship wide open. In a phenomenal ride Corey Turner (Desmosport Ducati, 1299 Panigale) secured a second-place finish for his debut race on the Ducati. Pole sitter Halliday finished on the podium.
Halliday (Yamaha Finance, YZF-R1) took off well from pole position, but it would be Josh Waters (Team Suzuki ECSTAR, GSXR-1000R) to lead into turn one, with Herfoss and Bryan Staring (Crankt Protein Honda Racing Team, CBR1000SP2) in tow. Early in the race, Waters, Halliday and Herfoss pulled a massive gap to fourth place. With ten laps to go Herfoss lost the front, crashed at YMI corner and broke his handlebar. With the bike too badly damaged to continue. After Herfoss’s crash, Maxwell was on an absolute charge through the field, after qualifying in seventh place for the start of the race. Maxwell was the only rider able to race consistently in the 1:13’s throughout the race. Maxwell fought has way up to second and was right on Halliday’s tail. Unfortunately for Halliday he ran wide at YMF corner and that handed Maxwell the lead. Turner also managing to overtake Halliday soon after. Maxwell would maintain first position until the conclusion of the race to take a victory to remember. His ability to maintain the sensational grip from the Pirelli tyres, key to the Race One win. In the end, it was Maxwell, Turner and Halliday that took Race One podium honours in a thrilling race that had the crowds whipped into a frenzy. Waters and Daniel Falzon (JD Racing, Yamaha YZF-R1) completed the top five. At the start of Race Two, Halliday managed to take the lead into turn one, followed by Staring, Waters and Herfoss. Lap two featured an enormous amount of crashes with Falzon, Beau Beaton (Racers Edge Perform, Ducati Panigale) and Matt Walters (Kawasaki Australia, ZX-10R) all going down in a short amount of time. Halliday, Herfoss and Waters now had a significant buffer at the front.
26
By lap four, Maxwell looked on for a repeat of Race One as he caught up to the three battling at the front. Herfoss managed to take the lead with 10 laps remaining, behind them Turner and Robbie Bugden (Kawasaki BCperformance, ZX-10R) were battling hard for fifth place. Bugden attempted to overtake Turner but crashed out after the attempt failed.
(Repsol Gas Racing, Triumph 675R) falling back to third position. Compared to his recent starts of late, maintaining a top three position was a more positive start to the race for the Triumph Daytona rider. Tom Toparis (Cube Racing, Kawasaki ZX6R) also had an excellent start, moving all the way up to second.
Soon after Turner managed to catch up to the leading four and the top five were separated by under a second. Although Turner managed to catch the leading group he soon crashed, after what has been a sensational debut on the Ducati for the teenager. Halliday managed to retake the lead from Herfoss, leaving the Honda rider to battle it out for second place. Maxwell overtook Herfoss on the penultimate lap, by that time Halliday had managed to build a massive gap. Halliday crossed the finish line in first, with Maxwell in second and a third place for Herfoss. Maxwell now leads the Championship with 193 points, ahead of Herfoss with 188, Bugden despite crashing out is in third with 172 total points.
Motul Supersport Ted Collins (NextGen Motorsports, Suzuki GSX-R600) achieved Race One and Two wins at Round 5 Morgan Park Raceway within the tightly contested Motul Supersport class. The highlight of Race One was the battle between the top three for the podium positions. Collins managed to get the hole shot into turn one, with Mark Chiodo
The top trio looked destined to fight all the way to the finish, however Collins waited until the last quarter of the race to make his move. With incredible corner speed and a finely tuned Suzuki machine, Collins smashed the race lap record by over a second and built a sizable gap to Chiodo. With three laps to go, Chiodo was losing touch with Collins and was coming under pressure from a charging Toparis. Chiodo tipped into a corner with too much front brake and lost the front, crashing with less than a handful of laps left. The crash elevated Toparis and Nic Liminton (Race Center, Yamaha YZF-R6) up into a podium placing. For Race Two, Collins once again took the Motul Supersport Race Two. Despite not taking the lead into turn one this time, Collins bided his time and waited for his opportunity to arise. For the start of the race it would be Chris Quinn (Coopers HXR, Yamaha YZF-R6) to temporarily lead the race but it wouldn’t be long for Chiodo to once again lead. Following close behind was Collins. After overtaking Quinn, Collins moved up into second position. The movement for Collins to strike came with Chiodo once again crashed, this time high siding on lap six, in turn handing the lead to Collins.

Round 5 REVIEW It was yet another barn-burner behind the front men for Race Three, this time with the front four riders finishing within one second of Eerde who led the pack, trailed by Edwards and Broc Pearson (YRD, Yamaha YZF-R3). Eerde overtook the lead on lap two and stayed out there for the duration. Battye, Bayliss and Mahaffy locked in a tussle until lap three when Mahaffy ran wide. The mistake allowed Eerde to reclaim first and pull a.145 of a second gap, in front of Edwards, Pearson, and Bayliss. Behind Collins a great battle was raging behind with Mason Coote (Aark Racing,Yamaha YZF-R6) and Quinn that was raging until the final lap of the race. On the last lap Quinn managed to dive up the inside of Coote, but Coote was able to return the favour with an overtake at Suzuki corner. Collins would take the win with a three second gap to his nearest challenger. Coote would take second place while Quinn was the final podium place getter. Hi-Tec Batteries Supersport 300 A trio of tightly-contested Hi-Tec Batteries Supersport 300 Championship races had spectators on the edges of their seats at Morgan Park Raceway. For Race One, Billy Van Eerde (KTM Australia, KTM RC 390) was the fastest rider on track, finishing first in class, ahead of fellow ‘Over 300’ counterpart, Locky Taylor (Locky Taylor Racing, Yamaha YZF-R3). Zac Levy (Puma RV’s, Yamaha YZF-R3) came third to complete the ‘Over 300’ podium for Race One of the class. Reid Battye (DB Racing, Kawasaki EX 300) was fastest for the ‘Up To’ category. In Race Two, Edwards inched to a 0.141 second victory over Jack Mahaffy (JDS Moto, YZF-R3) and it was even tighter behind them in the battle for the final podium position of third outright which would go to Max Crocker (KTM Australia, KTM RC 390). Battye was the fastest of the ‘Under’ 300’s.
28
YMF R3 Cup Race One featured a skirmish between Mahaffy, Tommy Edwards (Alpinestars, Yamaha YZF-R3), Ford and Taylor for the victory. Mahaffy managed to gain the ascendency quite early on, leading the race for the opening laps. However his rival Edwards managed to take the lead at the half way mark of the race. The race came down to the wire as Edwards took the lead on the penultimate lap. However, Mahaffy managed to overtake Edwards on the final lap for victory. Edwards mentioned that he attempted to overtake Mahaffy on the final lap, but a scare with losing traction caused him to think championship and maintain the second place. In the early stages of the Race Two, Mahaffy, Tommy Edwards (Alpinestars, Yamaha YZF-R3) and Locky Taylor (LTR Racing, Yamaha YZF-R3) were in a tight
battle, but it didn’t take long for Mahaffy to build a significant gap from the front. In the end, it would be Mahaffy to take the win followed by Edwards in second and Taylor in third. Race Three was another master class from Mahaffy who delivered the race victory yet again. The victory marked a clean sweep from the young rider for the YMF R3 Cup races. Mahaffy was relatively unchallenged for the duration of the race with the gap to the chasing Edwards being a significant four seconds. As Mahaffy took the checkered flag, it would be Edwards in second and Ford to finish the podium placing’s.
GP Juniors Cup In Race One John Lytras (Caboolture Yamaha, YZF-R15), Joel Kelso (JDS Moto Yamaha YZF-R15), Tommy Edwards (Enemies Everywhere, Yamaha YZF-R15) Max Stauffer (Dyno27, Yamaha YZF-R15) were dicing and slip-streaming each other all race long. In the end Edwards managed to win the race. In Race Two, Edwards took the lead in front of poleman Joel Kelso (Deborah Motorsports, YZF-R15), closely followed by Ned Faulkhead (BROO, Yamaha YZF-R15) and Harry Khouri (Excite Motorsports Penrith, Yamaha YZF-R15) for the duration of the five lap race. In the end, it would be Edwards to take the win as he finished in front of Lytras and Kelso. Faulkhead just missing out on a podium finish.
air out front he needed to take the win in front of Lytras and Edwards for the top three finishing positions.
Motorcycle Sportsmen Club Challenge Race One was a master class display by Holmes, who won by a whooping 23 seconds. Carroll would finish in second position behind winner Holmes. In third place was Nadzri, 36 seconds behind the leader. The second race for the Club Challenge was won convincingly by Holmes. This race was a master class from the rider that hails from New South Wales. Homes finished a very impressive 23.249 seconds in front of second place getter Anthony Carroll (Honda VFR 400). The last podium placer was Glenn Chandler (Johnny’s Wonderful Coffee & Coiffure, Yamaha TZR 250) on the lower engine capacity Yamaha. Homes on bike number 3 would once again win Race Three in a carbon copy of all prior races, as he took victory on his Kawasaki. The race winner would cross the line with a gap over a full 6.5 seconds, a much closer margin than the previous races. The victory handed him three out of three wins for the weekend. In second place was once again Carroll on the Honda.
It was tight scrap into turn one for Race Three, as the riders from the front row had an even start, but Kelso got the hole shot into turn one. Once again it would be a battle between Kelso, Edwards, Lytras and Faulkhead in the top four. The overtakes at the front were again frequent. That allowed Kelso clean

2017 YMF R3 Cup After an extremely successful debut season for the Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) R3 Cup in 2016, YMA (Yamaha Motor Australia) is pleased to announce the YMF R3 Cup return in 2017 with the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK). Already boasting a successful race weekend at Wakefield Park in Round Two of the ASBK, the YMF R3 Cup fills the demand for a low cost entry-level championship that delivers ‘bang for buck’ racing. A prize pool has also been announced giving more enticement to join the category. The YMF R3 Cup is aimed at entry-level road racers and junior MX, short circuit and dirt track riders. YMA is subsidising the cost of the race-kitted bikes in order to assist riders wanting a low cost, hassle free introduction road racing. Just $7,900 buys a Yamaha YZF-R3 in road trim with the addition of a full race kit, which gives the option to return the bike into road going form if desired. The race kit consists of: • Fairing kit – including front fender and tank cover – uses stock screen – black gelcoat • Akrapovic full racing exhaust system with Ti muffler • Racing rear sets with multiple adjustments • Handlebar lowering kit • Gearing set JT – optional sizes – 1 front, 2 rear • Complete rear shock absorber with adjustable preload, ride height and rebound damping. Front fork kit with springs, spacers and shim stack • Graphics kit with all series and bonus sponsors logos supplied • R+G protection kit including – crash knobs, engine case covers, rear stand pickups, chain guard, radiator protector • R+G muffler mounting bracket • AIS pollution system block off plate • Yamalube Service kit – 4 litres of synthetic engine oil and engine oilfilter • Oxford rear race stand • CD with parts book, service manual, kit fitment manual, etc.
To make it even easier to join in, the customer may purchase the racing YZF-R3 using YMF finance. With the package price of $7900 the repayment amount over a 12 month term would be $168 per week or over a 24 month term $88 - both rounded numbers. To be eligible for the YMF Championship - as well as the considerable prize and contingency packages that will be on offer, four of the five rounds need to be competed. Riders must also display series logos and wear a Yamaha Racing patch on their leathers to be eligible for the prize pool payments. Due to the YMF R3 Cup being a showcase for new riders, all ‘A’ graders, international riders and pro level racers are not eligible to win any prizes – although they are welcome to race in the series. “YMA encourages the YMF R3 Cup to be an entry level competition, with the emphasis on the enjoyment of riding and competing on equal and cost effective machinery. The championship is designed to introduce new riders to the sport and so help build a more solid future for Australian road racing,” says Ray Howard, Yamaha Motorsports Manager. GP JUniorS AUSTRALIA The second round of this year’s Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship supported by Motul Pirelli also features the first round of an all new class in GP Juniors Australia, with the introduction of the GP Juniors Cup where competitors will ride the dynamic Yamaha R15 on Bridgestone tyres.
R15 machines. All GP Junior Cup bikes are completely standard with strict regulations to ensure they remain a level playing field with Bridgestone control tyres. The final category is for the younger brigade, of 9-11 year old’s who compete on 70cc two-stroke machines at alternate meetings of GP Juniors Australia. Over the past decade, there is an impressive list of graduates have emerged from junior road racing programs, including current MotoGP racer and Grand Prix winner, Jack Miller.
GP Juniors Australia is the evolution of the Motorcycle Road Racing Development Association or “MRRDA” as it was commonly referred.
2015 Australian Superbike Champion, Mike Jones and Daniel Falzon who has won three Australian 600cc championships in consecutive years, as well as his latest crowning glory, domination of the opening round of the Australian Superbike Championship at Phillip Island claiming pole position and backing it up with three race wins.
2017 marks the 11th year of competition for the national series and while the name may have changed, the philosophy is exactly the same; to create a structure and provide youngsters with an avenue to greatness. To be good at any sport one has to start at a young age. Road racing is no different. Young riders learn to take responsibility for their actions and show exceptional maturity as the nature of the sport requires a mature attitude and conduct at all times. They also learn about mechanic’s, physics and engineering, all benefits that will hold them in good stead for their entire life.
Others that have used junior road racing as a springboard include, Josh Hook (2011 Australian 125cc Champion), Jed Metcher (2011 European 600cc Superstock Champion), Troy Geunther (2016 Australian Supersport 600cc Champion). Other notables that have competed in junior road racing include rapid girl Tayla Relph, Tom Bramich (2015 Australian Moto3 Champion), Matt Barton, Ben Leonard, Locky Taylor, Callum Alderson and Matt Walters. The GP Juniors Cup will continue unearthing future road racing champions. We are sure you are going to witness the next generation of Australian champions learning their craft. So, have your little black book ready to jot down some new names for future racing reference!
GP Juniors Australia is split into four categories: ages 1216 years for an Australian Championship of up to 160cc four-strokes, 85cc two strokes and while making it’s debut in 2017, the GP Juniors Cup comprised of only Yamaha
