Welcome from MA
We would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone attending the Spokes.com.au presents Round 7 Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit for the 2017 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK). The championship decider for what has been an incredible season. It has been a time of phenomenal growth for the championship with Round 6 being broadcast on Free-ToAir television and Live Streaming to the world and our dedicated fans. We can happily say that the interest in the coverage was significant and it’s fantastic to see ASBK generating significant momentum. Round 6 at Sydney Motorsport Park was a critical round for the YMI Superbike Class after Josh Waters claimed two wins and Wayne Maxwell failed to finish Race Two. It’s truly anyone’s game for the final round with only 15 points separating Troy Herfoss, Waters and Maxwell. I would also like to congratulate Ted Collins and Reid Battye for winning their respective titles at Round 6.
The ASBK has once again has been assisted with phenomenal support from the manufacturers and teams to deliver world class racing to our fans. Once again I would like to take the time to thank our fans for their undying commitment and passion for the sport. It’s with your support that makes ASBK the success it is today. We would also like to thank our sponsors for their commitment and unyielding support for the championship this year. The racing simply wouldn’t be able to exist without their assistance. Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit is one of the premier tracks of the world and we are looking forward to seeing which riders come out on top. MA as a whole bid everyone a safe and enjoyable final round of the 2017 season. Lets get racing! Peter Doyle CEO Motorcycling Australia

PROTECTION
Starting racing isn’t so hard…
While we don’t like talking about it, people do fall off motorbikes on racetracks. MA requires all licence holders to have their own personal Ambulance subscription. We’d recommend that you have your own income protection and that it includes coverage for motorcycle racing. No one wants to use up all of their sickies and holidays recovering from an accident. Protection also includes your own riding gear. Starting from the top, you require a full-face helmet that is approved to AS1698, which is the Australian Standard for helmets for street use anyway. Alternatively, MA also recognises international standards so if your helmet does not have AS1698 you can check with MA that it is ok to use. A set of one-piece leathers that fit is the preferred way to cover the larger parts of your anatomy. Make sure they’re roomy enough for you to wear the mandatory back protector underneath, and a chest protector is
The decision to take up road racing is as old as the sport of motorcycle racing. Most of us on [Knee Down] have made that decision with varied results… Chances are that you already own a bike that can be raced. These days there are classes for just about anything with two wheels regardless of age or performance level. That’s the first step out of the way.
JOIN IN The next thing to do is to join a club that includes people with a common interest or are located locally. Log on to Motorcycling Australia’s website (www.ma.org.au). MA are the sanctioning body for all motorcycle racing (other than drag racing) in Australia. On their website you’ll find a full list of clubs in your state or territory. While you’re on the MA site, download their excellent ‘Getting started in Motorcycle Sport’. Don’t be scared about checking out a few clubs before joining one. They’re all unique and finding the right one for you will make the transition to road racer much easier.
recommended too. The best leather gloves you can afford will keep your digits intact if you’re sliding down the track and using your hands as brakes. There’s a huge variety of suitable boots on display at any decent-sized motorcycle shop. Take the time to find a pair that fit properly without being too tight. Tight boots will ruin your day very quickly.
GETTING LICENCED Every club has a secretary who looks after licencing and they will be more than happy to guide you through the process that includes an open book theory test. If you have a civil rider’s licence or have attended a suitably accredited riding school, that should be enough to satisfy the MA State Controlling Body otherwise you may have to undergo a practical riding test to make sure you know the clutch lever from the front brake lever.
12
GETTING YOUR BIKE READY If you’re not overly mechanically minded, don’t worry, your local bike shop should be able to check your bike over before you venture on track for the first time. A full service and tune-up now could save you from a big bill later. All racing classes have common rules to ensure bikes don’t fall apart or leak fluid on the track. Before you’re allowed on track at any race meeting, your bike will be inspected by a scrutineer. Don’t give them a hard time if they pull you up and point out something you’ve
forgotten. The majority of them have been doing this for a long time and don’t want to see anybody get hurt due to an oversight. Full rules for your class are in the Manual of Motorcycle Sport available at www.moms.org.au. But keep in mind that bike preparation is very important and quite in-depth for racing. Like you, your bike needs controlled fluid retention.
TIPS FOR KEEPING COMFORTABLE Assuming you’re like the rest of us, you’ll be carting yourself and your bike to the track in a trailer, ute or van. There are a few things we’d advise you chuck in. These may sound obvious but people still forget. Grab an esky and fill it with ice bricks and bottles of cold water. You’ll be amazed at just how easy it is to dehydrate while racing on a hot day. Even though racetrack food has improved from the days of dodgy hamburgers and warm soft drinks, chuck snack-type things in the esky along with sandwiches. You’ll burn off a lot of calories in a day and replacing them with racetrack food could send you broke. Not all racetracks offer covered pit areas so some sort of shade device will make your day much more enjoyable. Don’t forget the sunscreen either. The most important thing to take with you is a sense of humour. On its own this could be the difference between a day best forgotten and one of the best experiences of your life. If you think you can’t afford to race think again. It costs the same to race as it does to maintain a road bike or a track day bike, and entry fees for club racing are around that of a ride day – but you get a lot more laps at many race meetings…
YMF R3 Cup and GP Juniors Two Championships that are great starting points and avenues for younger and beginner racers, is the Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) R3 Cup and GP Juniors. Costs involved in these classes are minimal so that getting started in road racing will be attractive to as many people as possible. This means riders can thrive and develop their road craft and race skills while on comparative machinery. Because Yamaha YMF R3 Cup riders utilise the same bike model in the form of the Yamaha YZF-R3, the YMF R3 Cup allows competitors to race on an even playing field that highlights and fosters talent as well as making it possible to purchase a race ready YMF-R3 to take on the rest of the field! The GP Juniors compete on Yamaha YMF-R15’s. The GP Juniors feature young racers going head to head while learning the fundamentals of racing. The next generation of road racing talent can emerge from this class. The GP Juniors Cup is a fantastic platform suited to entry level competition. The Yamaha R15’s handling and power delivery characteristics are predictable, dependable and reliable. The GP Juniors Cup provides an immense opportunity for young riders to develop and advance in their sport. With the full backing and support of well-established organisations, at an affordable price, as the rider’s hone their skills and progress, who knows where they will end up!
GET YOUR GEAR ON You need the best you can afford and then some more. Spend more on your gear than your bike if you have to but, like is the case with your bike, having shiny new parts is a waste if you are learning. You will inevitably test your riding gear. A lot. So go for an affordable compromise. Don’t buy the most expensive graphics on your lid if a plain white one is going to be cheaper, for example. But don’t skimp on quality…
THE BIKE You’ll need to spend a bit of time here – all fluid retaining fasteners need to be lockwired, fairings need catch areas in the bellypan, you need a tether kill switch, brake callipers bolts need to be lockwired and you need good suspension, brakes and bodywork. You also need a bullet-proof engine because you are going to thrash it beyond any ride day or road level of thrash! No need to spend big. Start racing on an old bike that you can crash. A lot. Because you will…

Motorcycling Australia (MA) and the ASBK organising team, haven’t let us down. That, along with the YMF expansion around the world, a new local brand and focus, and some fantastic results in our YMI Insurance business, meant it was an easy decision for us to jump on board again for 2017. “Taking a lead role in the World Superbike Championship (WSBK) reminded us of how fortunate we are to have such a strong and stable championship in Australia as the ASBK, and what incredible talent resides locally, both on and off the track. At the halfway mark of 2017, the Championship has showcased brilliant racing in all classes and we can’t wait to see who reigns supreme at the end of the season. “YMF isn’t just a finance company; it’s an industry participant. Round 6 REVIEW GET UP TO SPEED WITH ALL THE ACTION FROM ROUND 6 OF THE ASBK
YMI Superbike Josh Waters (Team Suzuki ECSTAR, GSXR-1000R) took commanding wins for Race One and Two of the 2017 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK) Round 6 at Sydney Motorsport Park (SMSP). The wins bring the Suzuki rider right into championship contention after Wayne Maxwell (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R1) failed to score points in Race Two.
managed to overtake Allerton on the last lap and looked set to make his move on Maxwell. Hook selected Suzuki corner as his last chance to overtake, but Maxwell was wise to it and was able to regain the ascendency. Waters took the checkered flag followed by Herfoss and Maxwell. Hook almost managing to out drag Maxwell down YMI straight at SMSP, but falling just short to finish in fourth. Fifth was Allerton after an impressive race, followed by Falzon and Halliday in sixth and seventh. In the final YMI Superbike race of the day, Waters maintained first position around the opening corner as Staring positioned himself in second, the following laps would be a frantic affair.
In the first 16-lap affair, Waters led the field from Turn One followed closely by Bryan Staring (Crankt Protein Honda Racing Team, CBR1000SP2) and Glenn Allerton (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R1). Staring was having an impressive run in the opening laps, but retired after smoke poured out of his exhaust and engine started losing power, signaling another retirement after a strong weekend. This allowed Allerton to secure second. However, Troy Herfoss (Crankt Protein Honda Racing Team, CBR1000SP2) and Wayne Maxwell (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R1) were charging through the field at an incredible rate, catching up to Allerton in no time. Eventually, Herfoss and Maxwell passed Allerton on lap five, when Allerton appeared to be dropping back through the field. In the meantime, Waters was checking out in the front and was the only riders to consistently race in the 1:30’s. Maxwell and Herfoss were overtaking each other multiple times, particularly at Turn Two (Motul Hairpin). Josh Hook (Bell Helmets, Ducati Panigale R) was having a storming race behind, overtaking both YRD supported riders Daniel Falzon (JD Racing, YZF-R1) and Cru Halliday (Yamaha Finance, YZF-R1). Waters finally dropped back into the 1:31’s on lap 11, a testament to Pirelli durability. The battle for the two remaining podium positions came down to Herfoss, Maxwell, Allerton and Hook. Hook
26
It didn’t take long for Maxwell, Allerton, Herfoss and Falzon to engage in a scrap for the final place on the podium. Unfortunately, the championship leader Maxwell, crashed early on in the race at Shark corner (Rider Ok), once again blowing the title fight wide open. Privateer racer, Falzon also went down at YMI Corner (Rider Ok), likely bringing an end to his championship hopes. In the final laps Herfoss, Allerton, Bugden, Halliday and Michael Blair (Yamaha YRT, YZF-R1) all fought hard for that final podium place, with Hook and Corey Tuner (Desmosport Ducati, 1299 Panigale) not far behind. Waters would go on to take an incredible win. Followed by Staring and Herfoss on the podium. Allerton concluded the race just on the tail of the lead pack, ahead of Bugden. The top 10 was completed by Halliday, Blair, Turner, Hook and Alex Phillis (Apex Civil, Yamaha YZF-R1). The win to Waters made it a double victory to go along with his pole position, a perfect weekend from the Mildura rider to put himself well into championship contention. Herfoss now leads 2017 ASBK, with 226 points, ahead of Josh Waters’s 220 and Wayne Maxwell with 211. Motul Supersport ASBK 2017 season debutant, Arron Morris (Maxima Yamaha YZF-R6) took the Race One victory after the Supersport veteran pulled away from the field from the get-go. Mark Chiodo (Repsol Gas Racing Triumph Daytona 67R) rode brilliantly to second position. Tom Toparis (Cube Racing, Kawasaki ZX6R) would have impressed to a podium place, if not for a 10 second jump start penalty that was applied from the beginning of the race.
Sam Muldoon (Proworx Racing, Kawasaki ZX6R) was on the charge until washing out on YMI Hill near Turn 7. Muldoon showing incredible speed and was a likely podium placer. Justin Case (Percy Jack Motorcycles, Yamaha YZF- R6) was another casualty of the field after also running out of track. Mason Coote (Aark Racing, Yamaha YZF-R6) managed to take a third place after a brilliantly fought race. Coote
mega show for onlookers at the famous sun-drenched track. Oli Bayliss (Cube Racing, Kawasaki Ninja 300) in the ‘Up To’ category broke through his contemporaries for his first win of the weekend in today’s eight-lap affair, finishing 1.319s ahead of Reid Battye (BCperformance Junior Team, Kawasaki Ninja 300) and Yanni Shaw (BCperformance Junior Team, Kawasaki Ninja 300), who were the podium getters of the ‘Up To’ 300s. The top ‘Over’ subcategory of the class was Van Eerde, Tom Edwards (Alpinestars, Yamaha YZF-R3) trailing by 0.285 behind the front man, with Jack Mahaffy (Eastern Security Draws, Yamaha YZF-R3) following suit respectively. The top five outright of both subcategories were separated by under one second as the chequered flag flew in what was a very clean and fast race by all competitors.
actually crossed the line in fourth overall, trailing Toparis. In the end, it would be Morris to claim a victory to remember. Chiodo took a sensational win in Motul Supersport Race Two, after a brilliant second half of circulation on his Daytona set him up for the victory.
Race Two of the Hi-Tec Batteries Supersport 300’s saw a near capacity grid leave the start line, the field quickly funneling away in the first few corners and it was Van Eerde to take the lead but it wasn’t long until Tommy Edwards (Alpinestars, Yamaha YZF-R3) overtook Van Eerde up the inside.
The green light saw Morris, Chiodo and Muldoon, launch from the 24-strong grid to attack Turn One at Sydney Motorsport Park. Sam Condon ran off track at Turn Two due to traffic. The opening laps also claimed Jake Puritti (Consent2go, Kawasaki ZX-6R) and Case. The mid-point of Race Two was full of twists and turns, as victory never looked to be fully locked away by any one rider as an early battle with Morris, Chiodo and Toparis ensued. Toparis was on the charge and looked to be a very strong contender for the race win, until a very unfortunate incident on Turn Two with Morris, that took them both out of contention. Toparis losing out on vital championship points. Meanwhile, the battle mid-pack raged on with Coote and Muldoon dicing in an enthralling game of cat and mouse. Collins overall championship position in the points table after racing meant that he took out the 2017 Motul Supersport Championship on 263 points. 63 ahead of nearest class rival Coote, on 200. The points gap that Collins has cannot be made up over the one remaining round at the Motul Supersport Championship conclusion. Hi-Tec Batteries Supersport 300 In what was a thrilling scrap for the brimming Hi-Tec Batteries Supersport 300 field, Billy Van Erde’s (KTM Australia, KTM RC 390) efforts on his KTM through the day resulted in an overall race victory for the ‘Over 300’ and ‘Up To 300’ categories within class. On-track together but scored separately, ‘Over’ and ‘Up To’ 300 racers put on a
The opening laps were extremely chaotic, with the leading pack of Van Eerde, Edwards, Jack Mahaffy (JDS Moto, Yamaha YZF- R3), Max Croker (KTM Australia, KTM RC 390) and Bayliss constantly trading places. YMF straight was the ideal overtaking spot with the 300’s slipstreaming each other into Turn One on every lap. In the final stages of the race, it was truly anyone’s game and the KTM’s in particular were looking strong in the hands of Van Eerde and Croker. Mahaffy and Edwards managed to get their YZF-R3’s amongst the KTM’s and led for sections of the trace. Behind this group was Zac Levy (Puma RV’s, Yamaha YZF-R3), who was biding him time with an opportunity to strike. Very late in the race, Battye ran wide and dropped down the field and Mahaffy had a damaged fairing, but was still running at the front. Heading into the final corner and YMF straight, Edwards, Van Eerde, Mahaffy and Levy had a drag to the checkered

Round 5 REVIEW flag. Quite incredibly, it would be Levy to win the drag race to achieve victory overall and for the ‘Over 300’s’ Class. Yanni Shaw (BCperformance Junior Team, Kawasaki EX 300) would be the highest placed ‘Under 300’s’ runner after Battye’s incident near the front.
of corners. Mahaffy then made a break for it and took a .227s victory over Edwards. Ford tried to slipstream past Edwards but was just too far back. Pearson finished behind the trio in fourth a further 2.363s back.
Race Three was one of the absolute highlights of the day. 37 bikes lined up on the start grid for the nine-lap race of attrition. This time, it would be Van Eerde who would get the hole shot into turn one. After a few exciting opening laps, a battle began to escalate between nine riders at the front. Riders Van Eerde, Mahaffy, Edwards, Pearson, Battye, Levy, Croker and Bayliss all battling hard to challenge for wins. Bayliss suffered an early retirement with a mechanical issue. A monumental battle ensued, allowing the riders to duke it out to the finish. Of the leading group, Mahaffy crossed the line to become the overall winner. As a result of his ‘overall’ fifth place Battye had become the 2017 ‘Under 300’s’ Champion. It’s been a very impressive and consistent season from the young star and he was clearly ecstatic to take the championship on the penultimate round. YMF R3 Cup For Race One, Tommy Edwards (Alpinestars, YZF-R3) took off well from second on the grid, but he was soon overtaken by Jack Mahaffy (Eastern Security Doors, Yamaha YZF-R3). What ensued was a terrific battle between Mahaffy, Edwards and Hunter Ford (Ford Brothers Racing, Yamaha YZF-R3). The trio were chopping and changing, lap by lap. On the last lap, the leading trio of riders were basically in unison, with nothing between them. Ford looked on course to take the advantage with the lead in the first sequence of corners, but it wouldn’t take long for Edwards to slot his bike in front around the back of SMSP. Edwards would hold that advantage to take a win with a margin as close as 0.070s over Ford and Mahaffy. Broc Pearson (Yamaha, YZF-R3) and Corey Briffa (Alex Cudlin Motorsport, Yamaha, YZF-R3) finished in a distant fourth and fifth placings. Mahaffy won Race Two of the YMF R3 Cup class. It would be Edwards to manage the lead into turn one with a lightning start. In the early stages of the race, Mahaffy, Edwards, Ford and Pearson blew open a gap at the front and were constantly trading places. On the last lap Edwards was leading but was overtaken by Mahaffy in the first sequence

Race Three was another masterclass from rider Edwards, although once again Mahaffy got the hole shot into turn one. The highlight of the race was the battle between Edwards, Mahaffy and Ford. The stoush was once again set for a thrilling conclusion as the trio went into the last lap, Ford was leading into the final corner but it would be Edwards to get an excellent slipstream to take the win. As Edwards took the checkered flag, it would be Mahaffy in second and Ford to finish the podium placings. Championship points now have Edwards leading with 244 ahead of Mahaffy with 239, setting up a thrilling conclusion between the two for the final round at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. Moto 3 / 125GP It would be Dylan Whiteside (Aussie Crane Trucks, Honda NSF250R) to get the hole shot into Turn One and lead from the front. Hot on his heels was the Northern Territorian, Joel Kelso (JDS Moto, NSF250R). Whiteside maintained his lead but was never able to shake off Kelso from behind. The margin between the two rarely went over half a second. Whiteside was too canny in defense however, and managed to hang on to his first position, to claim a cool and collected victory in front of Kelso. Behind the leading duo came Dallas Skeer (Ron Angel Classic Racing, NSFR 250R) who finished 34 seconds behind. The top three podium placers all riding Honda NSF 250 R machines. Fourth and fifth place getters were Scott Topping (B-spoke Design, Honda RS) and David Doughty (Fastline GPRacing, Aprilia RS). Another highlight of the race was the battle between Doughty, Travis Hall (Motorcycles “R” US, Honda NSF250R), Taran Ocean (Keith Ogilvie, Honda RS) and Ross Taylor
(GDR, Honda NSF250R) for fifth place, less than a second separating the group when they crossed the finish line. Kelso was the dominant rider in class for Race Two. His fantastic race started from the very beginning of circulation, getting the hole-shot into turn one. Kelso managed to lead in clean air, until mid-race when Geelong man Whiteside executed a magnificent undertake to position in front.
Whiteside managed to not only reel in Kelso, but continue to charge past him on his 250, after consistently setting fast lap times. He was a man possessed on the journey to the flag, even managing to best Edwards’ previous class record at the track, set in 2016. Skeer rounded out the final podium positions in third. Hall and Doughty would finish a distant fourth and fifth from the leaders. Whiteside was once again the class leader, making Race Three a clean sweep for the weekend after leading from start to finish. Kelso appeared to be able to run with Whiteside, but like many times before, Whiteside was simply too strong to contend with. Whiteside took the lead into turn one, and engaged in a battle with Kelso for the remainder of the race. Circulation focused heavily on the front runners as there was an expanding time gap throughout the field. Whiteside crossed the finish line in first, followed by Kelso in second. Skeer finished in third once again to round complete the podium places. Whiteside was the overall round winner, with 76 points. The Northern Territorian Joel Kelso with 60 and Skeer with 54.
Race Two quickly got underway and the F1 and F2 class machines launched from the starting grid positions. The fastest lap was achieved by Dave Boughen / Lok O’Kane with a time of 1:40.826. The duo did not ease off their pace, cruising home to victory with Howard Ford / Lee Menzies (B B eard Concerting, Suzuki GSXR), only seven seconds behind. Third place getter was Des Harvey / Gary Cushnahan (SLW Transport, LCR Suzuki). Fastest F2 Machine again went Mick Alton / Chrissie Clancy (J & C Contracting, Suzuki LCR) in a carbon copy of Saturday’s efforts. Race Three of the F1 & F2 Australian Sidecar Championship was the final session on track at Sydney Motorsport Park. The race was promptly red flagged after one lap due to a single outfit crash at Turn 2 involving Howard Ford / Lee Menzies, requiring a full re-start and a reduced 7 lap race. In the restart, all outfits featured were away quickly and cleanly off the line and through the turn one and two combination, riders Dave Boughen / Lok O’Kane and Mick Alton / Chrissie Clancy led from the front.
The duo of Dave Boughen / Lok O’Kane were chased down Mick Alton / Chrissie Clancy outfit as best they could, however they would not be able to maintain the pace compared to the leaders. In the end, the podium would be made up of sidecar duos Dave Boughen / Lok O’Kane, Mick Alton / Chrissie Clancy and Jeff Brown/ Darren Sheldrick (APW Motorcycles, JBR Suzuki GSXR). Fastest F2 going to Mick Alton / Chrissie Clancy.
Australian F1 & F2 Sidecar Championship Race One was green lit in ideal conditions, and it was F1 class duo Dave BOUGHEN / Lok O’KANE (Suzuki GSXR) who took the win, (F1) Howard FORD / Lee MENZIES (B B eard Concerting, Suzuki GSXR), 8.550 seconds adrift. F2 class Mick ALTON / Chrissie CLANCY finished in third, a further 8.671 seconds behind. Fourth was (F1) Jeff BROWN / Darren SHELDRICK (APW Motorcycles, JBR Suzuki GSXR) who showed great pace. In what was incident free racing for the 15-team strong field, there were three separate mechanical DNF’s registered by mid-race that put a few title favourites on the back burner.

2017 YMF R3 Cup After an extremely successful debut season for the Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) R3 Cup in 2016, YMA (Yamaha Motor Australia) is pleased to announce the YMF R3 Cup return in 2017 with the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK). Already boasting a successful race weekend at Wakefield Park in Round Two of the ASBK, the YMF R3 Cup fills the demand for a low cost entry-level championship that delivers ‘bang for buck’ racing. A prize pool has also been announced giving more enticement to join the category. The YMF R3 Cup is aimed at entry-level road racers and junior MX, short circuit and dirt track riders. YMA is subsidising the cost of the race-kitted bikes in order to assist riders wanting a low cost, hassle free introduction road racing. Just $7,900 buys a Yamaha YZF-R3 in road trim with the addition of a full race kit, which gives the option to return the bike into road going form if desired. The race kit consists of: • Fairing kit – including front fender and tank cover – uses stock screen – black gelcoat • Akrapovic full racing exhaust system with Ti muffler • Racing rear sets with multiple adjustments • Handlebar lowering kit • Gearing set JT – optional sizes – 1 front, 2 rear • Complete rear shock absorber with adjustable preload, ride height and rebound damping. Front fork kit with springs, spacers and shim stack • Graphics kit with all series and bonus sponsors logos supplied • R+G protection kit including – crash knobs, engine case covers, rear stand pickups, chain guard, radiator protector • R+G muffler mounting bracket • AIS pollution system block off plate • Yamalube Service kit – 4 litres of synthetic engine oil and engine oilfilter • Oxford rear race stand • CD with parts book, service manual, kit fitment manual, etc.
To make it even easier to join in, the customer may purchase the racing YZF-R3 using YMF finance. With the package price of $7900 the repayment amount over a 12 month term would be $168 per week or over a 24 month term $88 - both rounded numbers. To be eligible for the YMF Championship - as well as the considerable prize and contingency packages that will be on offer, four of the five rounds need to be competed. Riders must also display series logos and wear a Yamaha Racing patch on their leathers to be eligible for the prize pool payments. Due to the YMF R3 Cup being a showcase for new riders, all ‘A’ graders, international riders and pro level racers are not eligible to win any prizes – although they are welcome to race in the series. “YMA encourages the YMF R3 Cup to be an entry level competition, with the emphasis on the enjoyment of riding and competing on equal and cost effective machinery. The championship is designed to introduce new riders to the sport and so help build a more solid future for Australian road racing,” says Ray Howard, Yamaha Motorsports Manager. Please go to www.yamaha-motor.com.au to download an application form.

GP JUniorS AUSTRALIA The second round of this year’s Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship supported by Motul Pirelli also features the first round of an all new class in GP Juniors Australia, with the introduction of the GP Juniors Cup where competitors will ride the dynamic Yamaha R15 on Bridgestone tyres.
R15 machines. All GP Junior Cup bikes are completely standard with strict regulations to ensure they remain a level playing field with Bridgestone control tyres. The final category is for the younger brigade, of 9-11 year old’s who compete on 70cc two-stroke machines at alternate meetings of GP Juniors Australia. Over the past decade, there is an impressive list of graduates have emerged from junior road racing programs, including current MotoGP racer and Grand Prix winner, Jack Miller.
GP Juniors Australia is the evolution of the Motorcycle Road Racing Development Association or “MRRDA” as it was commonly referred.
2015 Australian Superbike Champion, Mike Jones and Daniel Falzon who has won three Australian 600cc championships in consecutive years, as well as his latest crowning glory, domination of the opening round of the Australian Superbike Championship at Phillip Island claiming pole position and backing it up with three race wins.
2017 marks the 11th year of competition for the national series and while the name may have changed, the philosophy is exactly the same; to create a structure and provide youngsters with an avenue to greatness. To be good at any sport one has to start at a young age. Road racing is no different. Young riders learn to take responsibility for their actions and show exceptional maturity as the nature of the sport requires a mature attitude and conduct at all times. They also learn about mechanic’s, physics and engineering, all benefits that will hold them in good stead for their entire life.
Others that have used junior road racing as a springboard include, Josh Hook (2011 Australian 125cc Champion), Jed Metcher (2011 European 600cc Superstock Champion), Troy Geunther (2016 Australian Supersport 600cc Champion). Other notables that have competed in junior road racing include rapid girl Tayla Relph, Tom Bramich (2015 Australian Moto3 Champion), Matt Barton, Ben Leonard, Locky Taylor, Callum Alderson and Matt Walters. The GP Juniors Cup will continue unearthing future road racing champions. We are sure you are going to witness the next generation of Australian champions learning their craft. So, have your little black book ready to jot down some new names for future racing reference!
GP Juniors Australia is split into four categories: ages 1216 years for an Australian Championship of up to 160cc four-strokes, 85cc two strokes and while making it’s debut in 2017, the GP Juniors Cup comprised of only Yamaha
